Flat course, lots of Spanish Moss!

Great marathon! 50 state marathoner here, the weather was perfect and the course was flat and wound through lovely suburban neighborhoods with gorgeous homes on shady tree lined streets. Website and online info was practically non-existent, you had to just wing it and hope for the best. No course map online, no directions to the starting line or advice for parking. Boo!

Flat, fast, but suburban

If you want a flat race, this one is for you! Packet pick-up was easy, and the gym was a nice, dry place to wait. I appreciated that the gun went off right on time. The first 5K is an out and back on a main road, followed by a course that's completely on roads through the suburbs. The tree-lined roads are nice, and some of the homes are beautiful, but I was hoping for at least a glimpse of the city and the water. Neither are part of this race. I stayed at the host hotel and used the bus transportion, which was nice. Overall, if you want flat, fast, and low-key, this is a great race. If you want a city race with spectators, this one is not for you.

Flat and fast!

First timer, so take this with a grain of salt or salt tablet. Whatever you prefer.. :) The start was simultaneous with 5K, half and full runners. I got to run a mile or so with my wife, so that was nice. The course was very flat. Almost to the point I wanted some challenging hills. You got to run through some neighborhoods and see some nice houses. The aid stations were awesome! They had people cheering you on and giving out water, gatorade and at the later aid stations Gu's. One of the aid stations had some folks singing. I mean how can you not smile when folks are cheering you on and singing. One note. Get there early! Parking is a mad house. We ended up getting there fairly early and got a decent parking spot. Traffic is pretty bad, so a word to the wise, get there early. Overall a good race. I'd do it again. Just wish they had beer at the finish line. I improvised and brought a small cooler.

Flat! Fast!

Flat, fast course through nice, quiet residential areas. It was pouring rain for the first half of the race so spectators were few and far between. But those who braved the cold rain with us were great! The gym at the school was open before the start and the bathrooms at the track were also, so staying out of the wind and rain was easy. I don't think everyone knew there were more bathrooms besides the portas as I see complaints about long porta lines. I was able to go 2 times before the race with minimal wait time. I thought having all three races start at the same time on the same route would be a problem but it wasn't at all. I started in the appropriate place and others around me seemed to do so also. The course was not completely closed so there were a few times I was running next to cars (in neighborhoods) but they were respectful and kept a safe distance. There were plenty of water stops along the way and plenty of snacks at the finish. The finish was on the track which was different and fun. This my my 17th marathon and a 7+ min PR. BOSTON '17!!

Great event from start to the finish!

Signed up three weeks prior to the race and the price was still very good. Stayed at the host hotel, Embassy Suites. Very nice hotel, they also had a pre-race dinner and shuttle service to the race. Definitely would stay there again. Packet pickup was great! You had at least six different locations to choose from and also the option to grab it on race day. I used the buses from the hotel and my family used the church parking lot for $20 and got a great spot. The buses were perfect! No lines and it was a quick 10 minute ride or so to the start. Once we were dropped off at the Bolles School they had the auditorium open to keep out of the weather and stay warm until it was time to race! There were plenty of bathrooms at the school plus the porta johns. No problems there. I was able to drive the course the day before and it was pretty easy to follow. Race day was perfect in my opinion: raining and about 50F throughout! It was awesome to watch the elite runners trying to qualify in the half marathon for the Olympic Trials! I would definitely recommend this race to others and it is flat. There were more spectators on the course than I thought would be due to the rain! The volunteers were all awesome! Plenty of aid stations along the course and the amount of time clocks on the course were great!! Best of all, my first BQ and my family was there to watch me finish inside the Bolles Stadium which was a plus! Train hard and run fast!

Very scary start!!

I should start by saying that I'm a 50-stater who travels around the country running marathons and this was my Florida race. The airport is far from the start so a car is needed. The pick-up was at a nice running store or one could opt for race morning pick-up. We drove to the start and were charged $20 by a church to park on the grass across the street from the church. But, we were not allowed to use the bathrooms at the church! Got to the start area and everything was within 50 yards of each other... bib pick-up, baggage check, start line and potties (which were extremely scarce with looong lines). I was in the potty when the race started and got out 4 minutes later to find that start clock being removed and the start mat turned off. APPALLING! I was allowed to start but worried for 26.2 miles that my race would not count. Would I need to do FL again?? I wondered the whole way. It was miserable. My chip did not beep at any of the mats along the course and when I crossed the finish, the announcer stated that I should have my chip checked because it did not register. I went to the time-keepers and told them that my chip did not work so they asked for my finish time. Thank God for the Garmin on my wrist as that was evidence of the distance that I covered and of my finish time. They added my time to the results, for which I'm grateful, but talk about a stressful run!!! Starting mats should never be removed less than 5 minutes after the race start (especially when porta potties are limited!!)

Fine race

Read all comments about 2016 with caution. The weather sucked, so that might have an impact on how people respond. Overall, a great race. Very flat. Seemed scenic, but the rain was so bad we couldn't tell. The last few miles on the busy 4-lane road stink. Through neighborhoods was good. Good support with water and Gatorade. No crowd support (but remember it poured). Nice medal with separate for marathon. Should do the same for the shirt, which has half and 5k on it and seems lame to not have one for full marathon. Race here with confidence. People know how to do it.

Awesome race again!

First Place Sports does it again! This race keeps on getting better and better. I did a 10 minute PR in the full and will be back when I want my next huge PR...this is the place to do it.

Flat and fast, well organized

I am glad I picked this as my Florida race! Flat and fast, well organized, nice medal and nice shirt. Plenty of food at the finish and area to hang out afterwards if you have time. It did get warm, especially at the end, but hey it is Florida! I would do this one again.

Great race, bad timing, right after christmas.

This is my second time doing the full, first time back in 2011. Everything was great, easy packet pickup on saturday at the Baymeadows store, in and out in 5 minutes. The course is flat and fast, running in the shade a lot which is awesome. Great course looking for a PR, digital clocks at most mile markers a definite plus. A week or two before Christmas would have been ideal for easier travel. Overall a great experience.

Outstanding Marathon

I've run 43 marathons and 7 Ironman races. Sizes from less than 100 runners to the New York city marathon. The Jacksonville Marathon is now one of my favorites. Excellent organization, friendly/helpful staff and an outstanding course. Not heavy on the spectator front but personally I get a little tired of continuous screaming. As advertised the course is fast. Although I didn't have a very good race I was still able to qualify for my 16th consecutive Boston. The only constructive criticisim I have is the organizers should use their influence to make the host hotel provide for late checkout. I would have enjoyed hanging around after the race but was forced to leave in order to shower before getting on a plane later that evening. Definitely a 'do again' race if scheduling permits.

Well organized PR course

I've run 4 Jax Bank full marathons. 1st Place Sports does an excellent job putting on this race. 2013's weather was unfortunate, but normally it has been a clear, cool, fast course. Not a ton of crowd support.

Tough day with Rain

Not my day. Hot humid heavy rain, but this is not an issue with the race directors. Flat course where you can hit your PR if you like a flat course (I like a few hills). Upgraded medal from prior years. Parking is very tight as the race has gotten popular, plan accordingly. Good food at the end - including hot soup.

Hot, Humid and Rainy day

This marathon is a definite PR course if the weather is kind. We had morning temperatures of 72 degrees at the start with high humidity. The forecast was for heavy rain and thunderstorms for the race and it started raining about one hour into the race but really picked up around the 3 hour mark with heavy flooding rains with the occasional clap of thunder. The course was flooded with ankle deep water for about 5 miles. The course itself was pretty nice going through several neighborhoods and was pancake flat. I would love to do this course again with cooler weather and dry skies. The post- race was good with soup, bananas, cinnamon buns, etc. I didnt see any chocolate milk which is what I want after the race but there were several stores close to the finish which I was able to get my fix. The race shirt was a short sleeve Tech shirt which was nice. Medal was decent with the skyline of Jacksonville with runners below and had the word finisher at the bottom. Nice size. The volunteers were awesome at all the aid stations and there were plenty on the course. The packet pickup was at one of the several running stores in Jacksonville and was quick and painless. I was able to get a new water bottle while there. Some suggestions for runners of future Soldiers marathons: Hotels are plentiful within a 5 mile radius of the start. I would recommend staying in the Baymeadows area. In summary, as I am near the beginning of the 50 State project, I am glad I ran this one for the Florida Marathon. The course is a good and flat and is a PR course if all the factors are right.

Good small marathon on a flat course.

I must disagree with an earlier comment. I completed the race at 5:13 and there was plenty of food at the finish. Fan support was limited, but it was pouring ran much of morning. It is a flat and fast out and back course. Organization is good and volunteers are great. Plenty of port-o-johns and fluids along the course. I have no issues with the race. The course is OK, but not memorable.

Fast race

This is a very small race with limited spectators. It was a fun race other than the torrential downpours. I PRd by quite a bit even with the rain, so I can imagine it is quite fast when the weather is better!

Bad weather...

I can't recommend this marathon for someone looking to run a fast time. The course is flat but not all that shaded as billed. Thankfully we didn't need it as it poured the entire second half. It was also 70F. Not exactly conditions for a fast race. The organization was pretty good but there was hardly anything to eat at the finish. And the results page kept giving errors. Overall it's a nice small race but if you live up north just know you are taking a big gamble with the weather unless you like it warm.

Fast, low-key marathon

This was my second marathon. Without proper training, I was on pace for a BQ (15 minutes faster than my previous marathon) and I nearly collapsed at the 24th mile. A local half marathoner caught me, and together with a cop, walked me to the finish line. The generosity of these Jacksonville people made a tremendous impression on me. This is a super flat, fast course, but as I learned, be prepared for the last couple miles in the hot FL sun.

Flat, Fast, Well Organized

This is a great winter marathon. I stayed at the host hotel and there was a bus shuttle right to the start line. The host hotel had bananas, coffee, and bagels out by 5:30AM. Also plenty of grocery stores and drug stores near the hotel for last minute items. The Bolles school is a great place to start - if you walked back to the track area you were treated to plenty of indoor, flushing toilets! The course is flat, fast and most of it is shaded. Water/Gatorade every couple of miles and I think they also had pacing clocks at each mile. I like finishing on a track too so I considered that a plus. I marked it low on spectators because there just weren't many of them. I'd call the course 'pleasant but not scenic'. I recommend this for anyone looking for a well-organized marathon in the winter. I also think this is great if you're a serious marathoner looking to PR without having to deal with big city hassles and a lot of crowds. It got a little warm near the end, but the start is 7AM and I think this was a warmer year than usual - and even so the 7AM start time helped prevent heat from being a big problem. There was a decent pack of 5-10 in the 3 to 3:05 pace range - thanks for pulling me to a 3:04 PR!!!!

Awesome PR course

Great mid-size marathon. Super flat course, very few turns, mostly shaded, plentiful aide stations, very well organized. The only negative is that it is a Florida marathon so weather is always a factor; a little warm and humid this year but I still managed a 5 minute PR.

What a nice day for a run.

This was my first running race. It was a fabulous course like running through the park, or to the park, most of the way. Everything was very well coordinated. It got a little lonely out there and an older gentleman came out of his driveway to run with me for a half a mile which was nice. The volunteers were excellent with water and sports drinks. I was amongst some local traffic a little, but they got it, and it was more than fine. I had the run of my life and will never forget it. Thanks to all of the volunteers and race coordinators for such a well run race. 3:00:43

Good wintertime marathon.

Jacksonville Bank Marathon 2011 was my first race in the city, which is a good venue for such late time of year (December). There aren't many choices for outdoor marathons just prior to Christmas break. On this particular day it became plenty warm after the first few minutes of starting the event. The course, organization and spectators were okay, and same for the shirt and medalokay. The post race food on offer was better than average, I remember. For me the Jacksonville Bank Marathon was well-timed because it allowed me to continue long-distance running events Stateside into the winter months.

A must do marathon!

The Jacksonville Marathon is fast becoming one of my absolute favourites! This is my second time running it since it was my first marathon in 2007. I have run 15 marathons all over the USA, Germany and Bahamas and this one ranks way up there with the big boys in terms of organization. Keep up the good work First Place Sports! I will definitely be back again. If you are looking for a PR then this is a must do.

Flat and Fast

This is only my second marathon, though I run 30+ road races yearly. This is a nice small race - pretty well organized with hydration (water and gatorade) every 2 miles and digital splits for every mile. Course is about as flat you can imagine - total pancake. Not much scenery but mostly well shaded residential areas. Spectators are very limited. There is some light traffic on the course. They had recorded splits for 5k, 10 mile 13.1 and 20 mile, which is nice to be able to go back and analyze your performance. Medal, shirt and post race food were all decent, though these are not things I really care about. Basically a great course to try a PR or BQ.

First Marathon Experience

After 6 half marathons I figured it was time to go all in. Overall a good experience. The course was well marked with digital splits at every mile and water every 2. There were times we had to run in traffic on secondary roads. I was disappointed by the finish though. The track was being resurfaced so looked a mess. They hand you a bagged medal that I fumbled trying open because I was exhausted. The race was raising funds for Bolles, one of the most exclusive/expensive private schools in the area. As such, is it too much to have someone of note(president or dean of students)be there to thank the runners and hand them their medals by the ribbon if they are not going to hang it around their neck. After party was so so with soup, bagels, bananas, but no beer.

The weather conditions were great.

I have been running marathons for 20 years. I have always felt that people who cheated in a race were only cheating themselves. With a BQ being harder to obtain and witnessing cheating first hand I no longer feel that way. In the Jax race I was ahead of the person by 44 minutes at the half. By 20 miles he was ahead of me by 9 minutes without passing me on the course. I never passed him or he me in the race until about one third of a mile from the finish he went by me like he was running a 5K. He went on to win the age group. None of his splits make any sense after 10 miles. The man who finished 4th came from MA. He should have went home with an award. I know all splits can't be reviewed, but I believe the first 3 places in each group should.

Fast, flat track

First time running this course, but it was referred to me by a couple people in my running group. Loved and very excited that this was my 10th marathon and my fastest ... finally breaking 3:20:00. The weather was perfect ...43 degrees at the start and guessing abouth 55 when I came in. The course was very flat and well marked. Traffic was not an issue and I thought for a small marathon ... very well organized and pretty good fan support. Everything was perfect for what I wanted to do ... EXCEPT .... I found/ believe the course was long. My GPS, which I used for Boston, read 26.28 miles and for NYC 26.26 and Zurich 26.29 .. well, here it read 26.42. It seemed to be good the first half ... 13.12 at the half .. then all of a sudden it seemed the mile markers were further apart. I talked to a couple other people and they also felt it was a little long. I only say this as I felt I was in good shape until about mile 23 and I started to worry and actually ran mile 26 at a 7:18/ pace and the last .42 of a mile was at 7:05 and just made my time .. 3:19:37 Chip. Other then the scare at the end ... I would highly recommend this marathon if someone wants a well organized, small marathon and especially if they are seeking a PB.

Flat, fast, and well organized

Good midsize race. Well organized with convenient packet pick-up at a local running store, although no expo to speak of. Hal Higdon was in the store signing books, though, which was cool! Runners were able to stay in the gym to warm up before the race, which was nice. The weather was perfect- starting temps in the mid 40s and warmed up to mid 60s. The course truly is about 85% in the shade, so no worries about getting hot even though the sun was shining brightly with no clouds. The course was ok - basically an out and back through nice residential neighborhoods. No real scenery to speak of, but well shaded with pretty trees and nice houses. It was cool to see the fastest runners coming back along one section of the course. Almost completely flat (two TINY inclines) and very few turns. The volunteers and pace groups were great. I PR'ed by 8 minutes! Everyone was very friendly. No food on the course and no entertainment. Water/Gatorade was about every 2 miles and there were two GU stops. The finish into the school stadium was cool. I liked hearing my name called as I ran around the track! There was plenty of space for runners to sit and relax after the race, and it looked like there was some great post race food (soup!), although I never eat right after a marathon. The medal is good quality with a decent design and the shirt is a high quality short sleeved tech tee. For the relatively cheap entry fee, this was a great race. I would recommend it to anyone who doesn't need a lot of crowd support and is looking for a fast course at a good price.

Flat, fast and well organized

I ran the 2010 race and finished with my second fastest time ever, fastest since tearing my Achilles in 1994. It's flat, fast and well organized. As others have commented, there was not a huge amount of fan support, but I generally do not hear or see a whole lot when I race. Temperatures were cool, in the low 40's, and there was a misting rain on and off throughout the race. The last seven miles turned into the wind, and it got pretty chilly. I had run in a singlet and gloves and was wishing I had a long sleeve technical shirt in that stretch. Otherwise, packet pick-up and shuttles from the hotel made things pretty easy on race day. There was a gym with flush toilets before the race and another set of flush toilets after the race in addition to the port-o-lets. Overall, a good event if you are looking for a fast course.

Decent Marathon

This was my 15th marathon. The course was nothing special. The event organizers were super nice, but overall, I was not that impressed with the race. The roads were not closed off at times so we had to deal with cars. Later, as I left the event, I saw cars driving right next to the people still on the course. It felt fast though. Also, I could have been imagining this, but it seemed to me that there was a distinct sulfur or trash smell during much of the run. The pacing team was great. Finish is in a stadium, which was nice, but no post-race massage and no vegetarian food.

Good Smaller Marathon

This is the second time I have run this race. The weather was incredible for a marathon. The parking on race day is horrible. Adding the pace teams was nice. This is a great end-of-year marathon to travel to because flight, hotel, and rental cars are quite cheap this time of year for Florida. Also, it has a flat course, so you will PR if you train well.

Best of Both Worlds.

This was my 17th maraton. I've run small club/store marathons (100-200 people) and large sponsored races (NYC, Boston, Chicago). This was the best of both worlds. Easy packet pick-up at good running store. Great shirt; OK finish medal. Good transportation system. Start had indoor waiting area. Flat course with turns. Miles marked. Lots of traffic control, volunteers, and water stops. Chip timing was perfect. Always people to run with (3:40 pace). Finish was in the start area. Everything was organized and executed well. Weather was near perfect for racing. If I could, I would return every year.

FLAT Course for PR's

This cours is FLAT!!!!! It is set for for PR's and Boston qualifying times. If you need some hills to work other muscles, then avoid this course, as you could iron your dress shirts on this this course - it is that flat. Pros 1. Easy sign-up and packet pick-up the day of the race. 2. I parked my car 150 feet from the gym for pick-up - allowed me to go to my car for a change of clothes less than 10 minutes from the start of the race. 3. Gym allows you to stay warm, stretch and socialize with fellow runners. 4. Great volunteers on the course on a cold day. 5. Hot soup at the finish line - made me feel much better within 15 minutes of the finish. 6. Real restrooms at the start. Cons 1. Need a few more port-a-lets on the course. 2. Medal was a little plain - especially the ribbon. 3. Very few people on the course cheering - if you need fans, the small marathons are not your cup of tea. I love the excitement of the fans on the road but I do not expect fans at smaller marathons.

Good for a PR or first marathon

This was a good run, largely through residential areas - not much opportunity for folks to spectate, but many people sat outside their homes and cheered runners. If you need lots of cheering spectators, this one might not be for you. If you enjoy just getting out and running, it's great. I didn't even notice the incline in what was said to be a hill. This is a FLAT course that would be great for a first marathon. I'd do it again, but next time it will be for a PR!

COLD Liquid Sunshine

Great course and great organization... as I expected. A race doesn't hang around this long without DOING IT RIGHT!! I have wanted to do this race for many years but my 50 states thing took me in other directions. Now I can WHOLEHEARTEDLY recommend this race to anyone looking for a FAST, well organized race. It was COLD (it keeps you running), it was FLAT (nice scenery in places), it had FANTASTIC VOLUNTEERS all along the course, the POLICE protection was OUTSTANDING, and there was THE MOST WONDERFUL HOT SOUP waiting at the finish line. They did run out of Mylar blankets, though; order more next year.

Best Marathon Course I've Run Yet

This is possibly the best course I've run. It's fast, scenic, small and flat; however, flat is not always easier than the momentum and variety offered by a few hills. The sparse spectators were quality cheerers, and it did get lonely. The pace leaders were fantastic; they kept giving positive advice and affirmation to get us in under our goal. The only suggestion that I'd have is for more port-a-johns at the start. I waited in line 20 minutes before abandoning my spot, which had barely moved, and it wasn't until mile 10 that I found a vacant port-a-john.

Pleasant Surprise at my Hometown Race

This was my 19th marathon, but my first time running Jacksonville, which is my home town and 45 minutes up the road. I was pleasantly surprised. I had run the half before, so I recognized that the course had changed, going north for 1.5 miles, then south to a turnaround and back. I like it. It was nicely broken up, with good transitions. I personally couldn't have asked for a better day. The weather was overcast and 45 the whole way, and flat as a pancake. I got a 15-minute PR here and will always have fond memories of finishing my first sub-5 in my hometown. Now, more about the race. It is small, but not terribly small. The field was almost 900, with a sizable half marathon field as well. I was never alone; there were always new people to meet nearby. The course is flat, flat, flat - good for PRing. It also goes through some of the more scenic neighborhoods in the Mandarin area of Jacksonville. If you're looking for spectators, they are enthusiastic, but sparse. But, I mean, we are talking about Jacksonville here, not New York. The marathon calendar thins out toward the end of the year, and this is a great choice to squeeze one in before the new year.

I was looking for cool weather on a flat course. The start time temperature was 37. The course was flat, even for a flat-lander. No "never ending" sections; the turns broke that up, which was good for the head. The awards ceremony was too short.

Thumbs up from this first timer

This was my first marathon - I picked it because it was flat and because there are very few marathons during the winter up North where I am from. I highly recommend this as an entry into marathoning - I was really nervous about the whole experience, and the race was well organized and small enough that I wasn't overwhelmed. It was easy to get there on the bus and to pick up my registration packet on race day, and there were reasonable lines for the bathroom, etc. The Pros: - The course is VERY flat - Good water/bathroom stops along the course - You start running at pace right from the start - Bus over there was organized. I know this was a major complaint from this year's race, but I stayed at the Embassy Suites and I was able to get to the race on the bus in plenty of time. I also took the bus back to the hotel after the race, which was quick and easy. The Cons: - This race is a race against yourself - there are very few spectators to carry you through (though the spectators that are there are great) and there are so few other runners to "race" against that by the time the half marathoners peel off, you really have to push yourself. This was just as much of a mental challenge for me as a physical one. - GU stations. I happen to despise GU and carry with me Clif Bar Shot Bloks instead, so the lack of GU stations didn't bother me, but I did hear some other runners asking about the GU. There was only one station at mile 19.

Flat but Chaotic

This was an event by runners and for runners. The course was flat, as advertised, mostly through gorgeous residential neighborhoods and parks. The law enforcement and volunteers did a good job controlling the course, and the aid station volunteers were a treat. The Italian soup at the finish line? YUM! That being said, I can't rate this experience as highly as I would have hoped. The pre-race transportation was a nightmare. The course organizers strongly discouraged us from driving ourselves to the start (and wisely so) and recommended that we should take shuttle buses from three advertised locations. When buses didn't run from two of those three locations, the athletes who relied on the organizers' directives were justifiably angry and unnerved. Although I was able to take the shuttle from the Embassy Suites, I do not subscribe to the theory that I was not harmed by the transportation mistakes. Marathon running is simultaneously an individual and a communal activity, and what harms other runners harms me, too. Once that oversight is corrected in the future, this would be a pleasant race weekend.

Flat course, nice volunteers

A flat track for the someone looking for a BQ. The slope/crown of the roads can be steep at times and you will need to keep an eye out for traffic! There are not many spectators along this course but people were supportive and the volunteers were enthusiastic and appreciated.

Great race for a PR

Pretty course, spectators seemed plentiful, and excellent volunteers. The only disappointment was the ending (off-road), and by my GPS, the race was 0.2 miles too long. Overall, I will do it again.

good marathon

Nice marathon but a little room for improvement. Mainly disappointed in the transportation. I was in line at First Place Sports waiting for a shuttle bus when someone yelled that there would be no more buses. Nothing like trying to find somewhere to park in an unfamiliar place at 6:15 in the morning. Other than that, I PR'd and would do it again. Great volunteers and food at the end of the race!

A bit disorganized but good-sized race

We were waiting for buses transporting runners from First Place Sports to the race. No buses ever came. After waiting for 40 minutes or so, we finally drove over to the race and barely made it to the starting line on time. There are plenty of parking spots in the neighborhood. So next time, I'd just drive over there straight. There was only one GU stop at 19, instead of two as advertised. So a bit distracted and disappointed. But the race itself was good. Nice course and good size.

Flat, Fast Course

Course runs through south Jacksonville under very mature oak trees most of the way. Flat and fast. Partially open to low-volume, slow traffic. Good volunteers. There was an issue with advertised pre-race shuttle buses not showing up this year, but that only partially affected me. I did not like a short cross-country segment in the last half-mile just before entering the track.

Flat and fast

The course is not pretty, but it is fast. This year's transportation pick up at 1st Place Sports was a BUST! With 40 minutes before the start of the race, an announcement was made that there would be no bus transportation. A nightmare!!! There is an issue of local traffic but I felt that the local police were doing the best that they can. Some drivers in the loop neighborhoods weren't exactly runner-friendly. A nice, small race with a great finish area loaded with a variety of food and drinks.

Fast, small, affordable

Not every race is as big or well supported by crowds as Boston, but if you are looking to BQ, this race may be for you. Course: Fast and flat. Despite some wind, the trees broke it up for the most part. One lady was lost in the running lane, but she seemed genuinely confused; otherwise, traffic was very well controlled, and even when the herd thinned, I never worried about getting lost despite a course that can be a little winding. Weather: Stellar; if only 1st Place had control over this variable.... Packet pickup: Prompt. The flagship store on Baymeadows was pleasantly busy, but not so bad that I couldn't stop in for a gel pack or two. Goodies were great. In addition to the shirt, I got a couple energy bars and a Myoplex drink (both of which were in abundance at the finish). Prerace: Abundant directions and bus shuttles from the sponsored hotels. The hotels had directions, times, and an extra early continental breakfast at 0500. Toilets: The pre-race wait was about 10 minutes, which I found suitable. Thankfully I did not need any on the course, but they were plentiful, as were the water/sports drink stops. Crowd support: Sparse compared to major events, but I thought it was fine given the size of the event (750 in 26.2 and 1,200 in the half). Finish/Post-race: Line was at Bolles track, with stadium seating and a big PA for people to announce the names of runners. Plenty of water, cookies, bananas, bagels, soup, Myoplex, energy bars, and Mylar blankies. The chute was open for me and for everyone I saw after me while I was waiting around for a half-hour. Results were up within an hour or so. Downsides: -Coffee ran out at the finish (I think I'll live until I can get some). -The last half-mile twists through an unpaved residential driveway with loose rock that I almost tripped on (and others I spoke to actually fell). -Not sure how many people paid the $10 for post-race massages, but I thought that was a little pricey and the tables were empty when I got done. Overall: I ran with the dream (granted!) of a BQ. Definitely a great race for this. The staff/volunteers were very helpful, and as a city, Jax has a great running ethic. Not to mention that $60 for a marathon is a bargain these days. 1st Place has got their stuff together. Thanks to Doug and everyone who helped; you made my weekend great and gave me a great early Christmas present.

Flat, fast, laid back

Course - Would have given it 5 stars except for the traffic. I'm a slower runner, and the roads are open to traffic. Early on, police "escorted" cars that needed to get on the roads and kept them going slowly, and I had no issues. But later, there weren't escorts and the cars just seemed irritated we were there. I nearly got hit by one that passed by super close (even though he had the whole other side of the road to pass on!). The course is beautiful, past gorgeous houses on shaded roads - with big oaks with Spanish moss. Very serene! Easy to get a good time on this flat, fast course. Organization: Registration and packet pickup were easy. No expo, but you could get what you needed at the running store. I heard there were issues with the buses from the hotel to the start, but that didn't impact me. My husband dropped me off at the start, and we were able to drive right up to the start and drop off with zero issues. Only had to wait around in the cold for 15 minutes. Minimal port-o-potties at the start, but I heard there were also bathrooms at the registration (just not too near the start). Nice technical short sleeved shirt and lots of goodies in the goodie bag. Nice medal. Course volunteers were great, and there was plenty of water and refreshments, even to the very end. Great police support along the course. Near the end, I almost missed a turn into a neighborhood though - there was no one at the intersection to make sure we saw the sign. Good thing I had looked at the course map and knew to be on the lookout for it. WONDERFUL post-race support. Excellent vegetable soup, rolls, bagels, fruit, iced bottled water, etc. Even the massage folks were there until the very end. THANKS from the back-of-the-pack folks! Spectators - Few and far between. Bring your family if you want someone to cheer. If they had the course map and a regular street map, they could "chase" you around the course very easily, and you could see them dozens of times. I saw my peeps at the park turnaround, and was able to drop a layer of clothes off with them. Bring your iPod if you need "entertainment" on the course. The spectators that were out were very enthusiastic; there just weren't many of them. Many of the locals didn't even know there was a race going on. This is a great race if you need a long training run or a BQ, but it does lack the fanfare and hoopla of the bigger races (there were just around 800 marathoners this year). Great weather this year - 37 at the start, low 50s at the end of the marathon. I liked this marathon both times I ran it (I also ran it in 2004) and would recommend it.

Great course!

It is true that the race is flat and shaded. I was lucky that the weather was perfect: no humidity, temperature in the high 40s-low 50s. Volunteers were wonderful, and traffic was well controlled. There were few spectators, but all very genuine. I run well without a crowd, so I was fine. Now, the one thing I thought was far from good was the organization pre-race. First, the carbo-load dinner was mediocre, and there are other places where you can get really good pasta right across the street. I thought I'd go to the dinner to socialize, but everyone was being very shy and sitting with their own peers. I ate on my own (a not-very-tasty plate of spaghetti) and didn't get a chance to talk to anyone. I feel there should have been some ice-breaker type of organization behind the dinner. But, honestly, not a big deal. The one big problem was that on race day, something like 60 runners staying at the Holiday Inn hotel were never picked up by the bus that was supposed to take them to the start line. There were two official hotels - the Embassy Suites and this one - and we waited for more than an hour. The bus went to the first one, and never to ours. Some of us ended up driving to the race (where parking is not easy) or went to the other hotel to try to catch a ride. That said, the organization during and post-race was great. All in all, good, flat course. If you're lucky with the weather, it could be pretty much a perfect race. Thank you, volunteers, police, and neighbors who put up with us runners disrupting your Sunday morning!

No-Frills Marathon. Flat Course. No Expo.

Pros: +Pancake flat course. +Plenty of aid stations. +Great volunteers. Cons: -Hot and humid for a marathon, but not a surprise since it is in Florida. -Narrow course - one lane that is blocked off by cones. You will encounter traffic during this race. -No spectators. If your family and friends want to watch you, they can't go anywhere other than the designated spectator areas. -No pace groups that I saw. -The only clock on the course was at the 13.1 marker. You pay for what you get with this one. Probably better for a training/tune-up run than anything else. Flat course would be good for a Boston qualifier, but the heat might negate that.

I would've given it 5 stars except for the cars.

I ran this race as a comeback after a less-than-stellar earlier fall marathon. There is no expo to speak of, but the packet pick-up was at a running store, so if you need to pick up some last-minute items, it's there. I was looking to BQ, and wanted something flat. This is the flattest race I have run! I ended up with conjunctivitis and a sinus infection the morning of the race, and it was in the low 60's, which is a little warmer than I was hoping for. I still BQ'd and PR'd! I had read about the last part of the race being run across a soccer field, so I went to the school the day before to scope it out. I think knowing what to expect made that less of an issue for me. The entire race is shaded, except for the first few miles (but that's so early that it doesn't matter) and also, since it's essentially out and back, the last few miles. This didn't bother me too much. The worst part of the race was having to worry about the cars passing, since a lot of the race is open roads with cones blocking off a half of a lane. This is not the race to run if you need crowd support. There were definitely spectators and easy to access points, but a lot of the route is in residential areas that are closed off by the race route. I read some reviews that didn't think it was scenic. It's not Big Sur. There aren't really many water views, but if you like the Gothic look and feel of live oak trees and Spanish moss shading your run for almost 20 miles, then this will fit the bill. I thought it was gorgeous.

Flat course, but not well supported

Despite the 6-hour time limit, organizers started shutting down the race at 4 to 5 hours: pulling volunteers from water stops, discontinuing medical and police support, and asking all marathon runners left on the course to run on the sidewalks. Those few runners who did come in at or near 6 hours were greeted by a nearly disassembled finish line, with no food, little water, and no options for massage therapy or other luxuries. Clearly this race is geared to the marathon halfers and quicker runners.

Improved organization, and I still love the course

Last year it was my 3rd marathon; this time, it was my 7th. The organization was better; the course is still flat and in lovely neighborhoods; and the police, volunteers, and spectators are OUTSTANDING. :) They deserve all of their accolades. Well done. I will come back a third time (maybe more)!

Flat and fast! A good, small marathon.

Definitely a PR course if the weather cooperates. The finish on the track is a nice touch. The race is very well organized, and running the half and full together was not a big problem, as it can be in some races. Lots of parts with few spectators, but that didn't bother me.

A great course for a PR

It was my first marathon; in fact, it was my first race over 10K, and I must admit that it was tough. The race itself was really good. It is a flat course, with a great field, and the volunteers seemed endless. The water stops were perfectly spread, and GU was provided regularly past the halfway point, which I found out was a great thing to have! I would definitely recommend this race to anyone trying to qualify for Boston or even set a personal record. My main piece of advice is to run your own race and not go with the pack, since the majority of the group is only running the half marathon. Great race with great weather!

Great 1/2 Course and Race!

This was my very first half-marathon and I couldn't have imagined a better experience. Course was very well put together, the race started on time, and the neighborhoods were great. The only con was the occasional car creeping up on you in the middle of the race. When 75% of your race is in a residential area, it's to be expected. I'm definitely coming back for the FULL marathon next year!

Must Do Again

I ran your full marathon (and set a PR) in 2005. This year I did your half marathon. Once again, I was extremely impressed with the execution of an excellent race. The police support was tops, as were the volunteers at the water stops. The course was clearly marked and the entire run was a pleasure, especially the turnaround point that gave us a chance to see fellow runners and cheer on friends. Getting to your race is a five-hour drive from Columbia, South Carolina and it's well worth it. We'll do this one again. Thank you for all the hard work you put into making it a fun event.

Great!

This is my first marathon and it was a terrific experience! Packet pickup was very well organized. Facilities were beautiful. Course was excellent, beautiful (wish I could afford a home in the neighborhoods we ran through!!!), excellent police presence, excellent water stop volunteers, the toilet facilities were well located, and the turn-around was fun!!! I can't think of one negative thing to say about this race. Kudos to the organizers/volunteers/police, and to the Jacksonville citizens, for allowing us to disrupt their Sunday morning by running a marathon through their neighborhood!

Good Run

The bottom line is that this is a no-frills race. They market it that way so anyone who expected more is living in a dream world. The weather was hot and humid but you are in Florida, so that should be expected as well. The only problem with the race at all is the lack of parking. I had a flight to catch after the run so I had to take my rental car to the race site the night before and call a friend to pick me up and take me back to the hotel. The run is at a good time at the end of the year and it keeps you in shape before the Christmas eating, so I will probably do it again next year.

Nice, relatively flat course; close to home

This was my first 1/2 marathon and overall it was a good experience. For a first-timer, the course was great. I only have a few complaints, the resolution of which I think would make the race even better. First, the bag check was unmanned and do-it-yourself. There should have been at least one person there monitoring the area for the safety of the racer's possessions. There were so many people there, no one would have known if a person not involved in the race would have snagged a few bags in hopes of scoring some cash or jewelry. Secondly, upon finishing, the medals were handed to you in plastic wrap. I don't know about anyone else, but the last thing I want to worry about is unwrapping my medal to display it after running 13.1 miles. My motor skills were completely shot. Lastly, it was advertised that massages would be available after the race. There wasn't one table set up (that I saw) and I was waiting on someone to finish the marathon and wouldn't have minded a nice massage. If you're going to advertise for it, make sure it's offered. And a little music after the race wouldn't have been terrible. These are minor things that could be fixed next year to make the experience even better. I'm in no way knocking the organization, because they did a great job. But, a little constructive criticism never hurt anyone.

Not bad - FLAT course; nice path

Overall a good event. PROS: Easy packet pick up the morning of the race. Plenty of water stations on a warm humid morning. Decent food at the finish - with hot soup. Shirt - ok. Medal - ok Course flat as advertised. CONS: A little short on port-a-pots at the start - the church across the street was very gracious in opening their doors to allow for runners. Having cross-over runners at several points where runners were coming directly at you got confusing and somewhat challenging. Probably should start the full and half at separate times, as the typical half marathoner's pace is different from those running the full.

Decent winter race, but nothing spectacular

I'm going to try to focus on things that the organizers can control (i.e. not the weather). The ending of the race was odd; that could be better organized. There were not enough restrooms on the course, as I saw many people waiting for bathrooms. There were some rough spots on the track where people were going in opposite directions. The worst spot on the course was under the overpass, by a water station, with runners going in both directions. My only other major complaint was that there was no Gu provided for the 1/2 marathoners. Most racing suggests a Gu for every hour of running, but there was none available for the 1/2ers.... A Gu station was needed around mile 5 or 6. I had to carry my own, which isn't a huge deal, but kind of inconvenient. Overall, the race was ok and I would run it again, but I can't say I'd be that thrilled to do so.

Decent course; organization needs improvement.

This was my 3rd marathon (and 3rd this year). I PRd in spite of sore IT band due to the flat and fast nature of the course. The residential scenery was very, very nice, but the ending was rather weird. Stations were well spaced, and volunteers great. I don't care about spectator support - not the reason I run these (although I do like them when I see them!). Packet pick up could have been at a less congested, it could have been easier to get to the location, there were no safety pins in the packet, and in spite of asking if my chip was in the packet, it turned out it was not (I had to get it the next morning). Pasta dinner the night before: The info they gave us had the wrong address - completely avoidable. It was aggravating to spend the evening before looking for this place that did not exist at that address. Go to Vito's by 1st Place Sports; it was great.

Nice course... but change the finish

This was my 15th marathon and rate this as an average experience. The course was flat as anticipated, but not very exciting. As previously written not much support or entertainment, but that's not why I run marathons so that was fine. My only negative comment, which I had noted from previous postings, was the quirky finish. You run through a football field, around a dirt trail, then through a baseball field to another dirt path to the track to the finish line. There has to be a better way of doing the last 300 yards. I was also a bit disappointed at the lack of recognition for the silver anniversary of this marathon by the organizers.

Simple, small marathon

Pros: Easy packet pickup, flat and fast course, decent female-specific technical shirt (although it is lime green). Didn't mind the minimal race fans (I don't run these for the applause) and my support team was able to meet me at 6 places throughout the course, which can be tough in some races. Weather was VERY humid at the start but the shaded route is nice. Cons: Not enough porta potties (I lost over 10 minutes waiting at the single porta potty at mile 8), and I witnessed several near-head-on collisions with the half marathoners after they turned around. Decent race for a winter marathon and a potential PB... if the weather is right and you don't need to use the porta potty.

Flat course, high humidity, good soup!

This race was as flat as advertised, but not overly scenic - other than some very nice residential areas. No real complaints about organization, although there were some stretches where runners going in opposite directions were competing for the same section of road. There weren't many fans - but as a half-marathon runner, that wasn't really an issue. The humidity and relatively high temperatures didn't lend themselves to making this a fast course this year. There wasn't much of an expo (if any) for this race, nor was the post-race offering much to get excited about - although the soup was good. All in all, pretty well organized and supported, but it seems some scenic areas of Jacksonville would be good additions to this course.

Flat, FAST, Beautiful, Well-Organized Race

I loved the Jacksonville Marathon. Everyone was so friendly; even the Episcopal Church across the street from the start put up signs letting folks know that their bathrooms were open to runners! Folks along the route were giving out goodies: I got some of those famous Florida oranges, and ate TOO MUCH at the finish line: soup, bagels, fruit, and quite a choice of beverages. I don't see how Mr. Kalmer from Milwaukee can say that the course was "not very scenic." The neighborhoods were beautiful: well-kept lawns with lots of BIG trees. My favorites were the live oak trees with Spanish moss and limbs reaching down almost to the ground. He also said "mammoth-size" houses stood between the runners and a nice view, but many of those houses were BEAUTIFUL! I love the architecture of the old South, and while most of the homes were relatively new, many of them followed the patterns of the old Southern traditional homes. The live oaks, the pines, the palms, the marshes and wetlands, and the well-manicured lawns all added to the scenery along the way. My only disappointment with respect to scenery was that none of the staff from Hooters (which we passed twice) came out to cheer us on. But hey, lots of runners in great shape made for better scenery than that. Great run, excellent flat course, well-stocked aid stations, and though fans were sparse, the ones that were there showed great Southern hospitality and holiday spirit. Even the bus driver was cheery at 5:30 a.m.: she greeted everyone who got on with a smile and a cheery "Good morning!" I'm hoping to do this one again next year.

Flat and Fast, with Awesome Weather!

This was my second marathon, and I loved the course! It was extremely flat and fast! Traffic could have been directed a little better for the runners on the back side of the course in the residential area, but besides that it was a well organized race. Maybe offer bottled water at some of the stations instead of half-filled cups.

Still Need to Improve Shuttle System

I've run four marathons this year and this was the best course, by far! Well organized registration, start, and finish areas. Second shuttle pick-up at the Holiday Inn was about 20 minutes late and led to some last-minute panic for me.

J'ville was probably be my first and last....

The organization of the race was fine except there were no safety pins in my packet, which sent me scrambling before the race.... My fault, should have checked prior. But the course was flat and not very scenic. We ran next to a river, yes, but we saw it once when we cross the damn thing. After that, mammoth-size houses stood between the runners and a nice view. The water/Gu stations were nicely and evenly dispersed throughout the course. The fans were another story. After the first three miles and a few at the turn, there was virtually no fan support. The only noticeable encouragement I received was from a woman and her little girl in front of their house and I think it was a mistake because she had a dubious look on her face. I think she was just getting the Sunday paper. Overall, the race was fun but weak fan support and some humidity that was dense enough to chew on (no one's fault)!

Nice marathon

I really enjoyed this marathon. I was able to park on the school's campus, which allowed for easy access to enter and leave. Although the weather was kind of humid, the course was great. It was flat and very scenic. The water stops were about every two miles, just as advertised. The one downside was that there really needed to be more port-a-lets at the water stops. They were spread out about 4 miles apart and then when you saw one, there was only one and so you ended up waiting. The water stops were adequate. Will certainly run this one again.

Nicely improved

To me, compared to the 2006 edition, the 2007 edition of the Jacksonville Marathon was a nice improvement. From start to finish, organization was much improved: police organization of traffic on the course seemed more logical this year, volunteers were well coordinated and aid stations were well stocked with supplies, and pre-race organization went well. They could probably still use an additional portable toilet at each of the stops in the first and last six miles. It's probably still best for finishers looking to finish in under 5 hours; course support begins to become very sparse and they again started to run out of food at that point. But, in the end, this was a well-run marathon and I look forward to seeing this year's improvements continue and expanded upon in future years.

Flat & Friendly

It was a nice, flat race course with some beautiful neighborhoods and homes along the way. The number of spectators were limited, but the ones that were there were friendly and having fun urging the runners on. The cones were not always really clear about which side of the road we should be running on, and the motorcycle cops did a good job for the most part, but they were leading many cars down a single lane and they often pushed us to the wrong side of the street, resulting in some net longer mileage - and 2-3 times the misdirection by the police had us running on the same side of the road and directly at other runners headed in the opposite direction. The water stations were plentiful and well-stocked; however, the tables weren't spread out enough to allow volunteers to spread far enough apart for easy delivery. This often caused a slight delay and added congestion that I typically have not encountered at marathons of this size. Of course the weather can go either way and today it was moderate at the start and improved with breezes and a drop in temperature thanks to a cold front moving in. The finish area on the track at the school stadium was a nice touch and being able to recline and recover on the football field was cool as well. I would do this race again and I will be recommending it to friends.

Very walker-friendly; great, flat course.

If you want to walk a 1/2 marathon, this is the one for you. Course is totally flat, mostly shaded; parking is there if you arrive about an hour before race time. Course is out/back and if you walk, the marathoners will be passing you the last several miles. You will need to make sure to stay out of their way. (Many thanks to all the runners who had something nice/encouraging to say in passing.) Food at the finish line is adequate. However, just like last year, there need to be double the number of water stations and port-a-johns along the course. Also, need better management of traffic on the neighborhood streets after the 2nd hour into the race. Will walk this race again.

Well-done, pleasant course; nice, small-race feel

My wife dropped me off at the starting area 45 minutes before the gun, so I had no trouble accessing the place. The run along San José Avenue wasn't pretty, but the rest of the residential course was pleasant (for a largely out-and-back course). It wasn't crowded at the finish line, and my wife was able to get into the chute to take pictures. The organizers also provided a good map with very helpful tips on where friends/family could stand to watch their runners on the way out or the way back in. I might suggest to the organizers - if they're reading this - to start the half-marathoners five minutes ahead of the full marathoners in order to spread out the field. It was a tad crowded in the early miles. I appreciated the shadiness of the course, as the temps got into the 70s. However, my GPS didn't like all that blockage from the satellites and struggled to pull in signals. (The last six miles, my Garmin simply gave up tracking anything but elapsed time.) All in all, a nice experience. Very different from the mega-races that are Chicago, NYC, or Boston. A favorite moment along the course: seeing the spectator with the hand-made sign saying, "Toenails are for WIMPS!" :-)

Good, late-year, flat course.

I PR'd, so for me, Jacksonville was a great running experience. The course is flat, so if you're looking for a good course to prep for the real hilly ones, choose another race. Course is scenic and relatively shaded except for the final 3-4 miles. NEGATIVE: The course was re-opened to traffic earlier than advertised, forcing me to the sidewalks at mile 14 - and I was well under the course pace time advertised by race officials. The "expo" was a packet pick-up at a very small sports store with little or no marathon specials. Also, bus line to the start at the Embassy Suites was ridiculous, so I hopped in my car.

Great course with only minor hiccups

After reading all of the comments from the previous years, I was a little aprehensive about running this marathon. My experience was not half as bad as I was led to believe it was going to be. The course was 90 percent shaded and was very flat. The crowd support wasn't as bad as some have made it out to be. Running a marathon requires a little bit of individualism anyway. I don't need people cheering me on the whole route. The main problem that I encountered was waiting on buses that were supposed to pick us up a couple of miles from the start. We were told that a couple of drivers did not show up. I ended up waiting until about 30 minutes before the start of the race and took a chance on finding a parking spot closer to the race. Everything worked out fine. I loved the idea of finishing on the track at the stadium. The restrooms were adequate. There was no waiting in line for guys but can't say the same for the ladies. If for some reason I am stupid enough to ever do another marathon, I suppose I wouldn't mind doing this one again.

Want a chance to PR? This is for you.

I ran this marathon in 2003, and all the things that were a problem were taken care of this time. The marathoners turned around at mile 7. In 2003 they ran halfway with us. They had enough people working the water stations this time. There was no problem with the traffic this time and your clothes were place according to your number this time. Hard to believe a course this long is this flat. Having your name and hometown called out on the p.a. system when you are finishing makes you know it is all worth it. I don't ever notice crowd support and I don't care about a large expo. I love to get out there and run. If you are like that, then get ready to PR and have a good chance at qualifying for Boston.

A marathon worth inviting your friends to

I have never met a more social group of runners in any marathon. This course is flat and definitely PR-friendly... actually, more flat than PR-friendly, as this was my 4th marathon in 4 weeks. A bit warm and very humid, but I wouldn't ask for anything different for a Florida-style marathon. The aid stations had very spirited folks, but the best support came from the runners themselves. Even passing cars lent their support. The race shirts are definitely original (different color) and well appreciated. Race organization could be organized a little better to facilitate a faster packet pick-up. The aid stations were well dispersed, but I wish they had food (i.e. fruit, salt, sugar, etc... and where was the beer?!). I was soooo hungry along the course as the gel packs came a little late for me. I would like to see more food and definitely more port-o-johns along the course. I would definitely come back and run with the great folks of Jacksonville.

Nothing Special

What is good: The course is very flat, as advertised, and the shade helps greatly. There is little traffic to contend with on most of the route. Fairly scenic, especially if you like residential streets lined with oak trees with Spanish moss. If you like a course with absolutely no hills, then you could run fast here. What is not good: There really should be aid stations every mile. The weather was warm this year and if you skip an aid station, then 4 miles is too far to go without water. There are too few port-a-johns. The out-and-back course makes use of the limited facilities twice over - once as you go out and again when you come back. This means that both the runners coming from and approaching the 1/2 way turnaround share the same limited facilities. If there is a line I will always find a more convenient place to take care of business. An urban race of this size really needs to add more toilets or risk having runners use the homeowners' bushes. The race t-shirt was billed as being of technical material, but it was really a 70% cotton blend. This is a minor complaint, but they need deliver on what they advertised. Other things to consider: As mentioned before, the city does not support this race. There were very few spectators watching and cheering. So if you like to have crowd support or want to experience the excitement of a larger marathon, there are much better marathons out there. Overall: This is a very flat course, with minimal race support on what has the possibility of being a hot and humid day. If you want to run fast and can be ready for warm race-day temps, then consider it. If you are running a marathon for the first time or want to pick out a special race for fun, then you could find a lot more exciting races than Jacksonville.

Fast and flat, but that's about it

Run this race if you don't need any crowd support, if you're ok running the entire race (ok... all but 4 miles) in a residential area, and don't mind moving cars being on the residential streets that you're running on. One guy running near me commented, "Is that an oil painting or spectators?" That said, it was well organized, there were enough police to quell a small coup in a developing nation, and the organizers were great. My bad for not researching more to figure out that this was not the course for me.

Great No Frills, Fast Course

Having just done a marathon 7 weeks prior to this one in the mountains, I was looking foward to a fast, flat course and boy did this one deliver!!! It was warm and humid and I still was able to PR. I did this one kind of on the spur of the moment, drove down and found a hotel within 2 miles of the start for cheap, parking was a breeze, and the course was just dreamy fast. I don't really care for expos, cheering, bands, fire-breathing midgets and a lot of the other frills of bigger marathons. This gave me what I needed: a fast course, with some water, and a clock at the finish. I was literally in my car and on the way home within 5 minutes of finishing. The comments I had read on here regarding traffic seems totally unfounded; no problems at all unless you were running outside of the cones. If you are looking for a circus atmosphere and a million people telling you that you look great, then look somewhere else. If you want to PR or BQ, this is your ticket.

Small race grown too big

This marathon has outgrown its limited space. Transportation and parking were not adequate. There were not enough buses to get to the start line. People were trying to hitchhike to the start line, because they could not park on site, and the line for the buses was too long to make the start. This can be addressed to make the race better, but this year, the logistics were awful. Otherwise the organization was fine. The course is flat and mostly shaded. No spectators to speak of but if you need someone to cheer for you, I would find another sport.

Poorly managed, poorly organized. Nice and flat.

Very poorly organized marathon, with no expo, though packet pickup was quick. On race day, the busing to the start line was a problem; only one bus was available for pickup at three different locations. The race was late getting started. During the race, cars and pickup trucks and motorcycles were all over the running areas. Directions along the race were sometimes unclear; I had to stop early in the race and several other times to ask for directions. Some of the teams running and walking the race were 5 or 6 people wide, slowing to a walk suddenly, preventing runners from getting around them; this was very irritating. Good water stations and adequate facilities. Very few specators. On a positive note, the run through the park and residential areas was nice.

OK - Not Great - Keep Expectations Low

Once again, another marathon where half marathon runners get most of the post-race food. Why can't race directors limit food to the runners and volunteers only? Why can't food be placed aside for marathon runners? The Jacksonville Marathon advertised a "Free Post Race Meal at the Finish Line" on the web site. I don't consider bagels, fruit, water and Gatorade out of cups a "post-race meal." They had several boxes of crackers and empty bowls from Wendy's but the meal was long gone before 50% of the marathon runners finished the race. I was finisher 411 and there were 898 finishers. In poorly planned races, marathon runners pay double the fees, expend twice the effort, but get fewer amenities. If amenities aren't going to be available then don't advertise them. The course was pancake flat. Some of the aid stations were a little too far apart. If there are low temps and low humidity, it could be a PR course.

Good, but some minor issues

Overall, I would say the same complaints lodged by users from past editions of the marathon held true for 2006. I enjoyed the course - flat as advertised, mostly shaded, fairly scenic - but rate it only 3.5 stars (closer to 3 than 4) due to Jacksonville Police dismantling it from the south on up well before the 6-hour cutoff and before a 6-hour projected pace. This was particularly troublesome for the final 2.5 miles, but admittedly is not an issue for those finishing in about 4:30 or less. Fans, while relatively few in number, were very supportive along the way. The organization and volunteers were supportive as well. Finishing straight across the Bolles fields was a nice touch but a little slick despite the drought; I can see how it would be a problem in other conditions. Parking was not an issue with a little searching and packet pickup was straightforward. I'm a runner who doesn't need the trappings of a large marathon, so for me Jacksonville was a very nice marathon. Just be on the lookout if you're having a slow/bad day (like myself!) or are a slower runner.

Great first marathon

I loved the race. Great course - flat and shaded. Kind of lonely out there because there are not many runners, but a truly enjoyable challenge. Plenty of aid stations along the way. Only thing I'd change is the very end - running through the wet and rocky field and back woods. You're already ready to be done and then focusing on dodging tree stumps and rocks isn't enjoyable. Overall, amazing first marathon experience.

Beautiful course, great volunteers

One suggestion. The shirts are great, but the sizes were too large for females. I got a small and it is long enough for a dress and the sleeves come past my hands. Maybe next year, have your female employees try the shirt samples on for size.

I return every year for the half

This is a great training run for me - half marathon only. I run it just about every year as I train for Feb. marathons. I know there is little fanfare. I know it can be unseasonably warm and humid. I know the route can be tedious. They changed it in 2006 because it used to be point-to-point with a most unpleasant ride back in a school bus (yak). I was very happy to turn around at 6.6 - this year, more than I remember before, the running path was much too narrow for the number of runners. You learn to use your elbows, and zig-zagging is not optional. Ok, so there are some major problems, but I think registration was well organized and the staff/volunteers were friendly. The provisions before, during and after were above par (water, goodies, warm soup and food items after).

Mostly excellent course, except...

Around the 23 mile-mark the course takes runners against heavy automobile traffic; though the running lane is separated by safety cones, traffic is moving at 40-50 mph. The rest of the course is excellent, with ample tree shade and smooth neighborhood roads. Ample fluids on the course at frequent intervals. But as usual with races that combine half marathon with marathon, food at the end of the race was mostly gone for marathon finishers. Parking was well organized, but the shuttle buses should start picking up sooner.

Good, fast race.

Just completed the 2006 JAX Bank Marathon. I completely enjoyed the experience. It was my first marathon, but I have run half-marathons before. Weather started in the fifties but rose to the 70s as the race progressed. Only issue with the course was that part of it was on a main city street but there were plenty of police around to keep traffic at bay. The race is very flat. Slight headwind throughout, which was nice. I stayed in the Embassy Suites, which is recommended by the race. Beautiful hotel. Great experience. I wasn't able to get a race rate because I had made reservations too late, but I did get a great room and they gave me a late checkout. Just have to make sure and ask. Everyone was friendly. Packet pick up went well, it only took about 15 minutes. Unless you know Jacksonville, I would have the packet pickup at First Place Sports on Baymeadow. It is right down the street from a large hotel section of town and where the Embassy Suites are. It is really nice running into the stadium at the end and having them call your name out. It is an out-and-back course. The half participants break away at their halfway point. There was GU available and plenty of water stations. The only fans on the route were volunteers, family and friends and people whose houses you run by. Everyone was supportive. I would definitely recommend this.

Wider starting line/walkers in the back

Great course, great event. While the bus situation was stressful due to one driver not showing up, that logistics could be improved. A wider starting line would be most appreciated. Walkers should be toward the back. Using the entry form to request this would help. Otherwise great event!

Get Organized!!! People Have Worked Hard!!!

It is amazing that people recommended this race. This was the least organized marathon I have ever witnessed. We were at the rally point where we were told there would be shuttles at 6, 6:15, etc. There were none to be found. There were not even bathrooms at the rally points. We had to get back in our car and drive and park about a mile from the starte. The shuttle busses (school busses) did not all show up. They should have had backup. The course is flat, but boring. The temperature at the start was 55, and it was 77 at the finish. Uneasonably warm for Jacksonville and bad luck. The expo was nonexistent. The bathrooms were nonexistent at the start and sparse throughout the course. Lines were ridiculous and I find it unbelievable that they would have the same number of toilets from one year to the next after knowing they had a problem last year. The food at the end of the race was weak. Going from grass to dirt to track at the end was fine, but there were branches and tree roots sticking out at all over the dirt. There were cars all over the course - so much so that there was a backup and you had to hit the side of the car so they would move over and give way. There was exhaust from motorcycles and cars in the neighborhoods and especially during the traffic jam. The good thing about the race is that it was flat. It is shaded, but the bummer of that is that if you have a Garmin watch it will stop working halfway through the race, becuase you are in the middle of too many trees. Water and PowerAde are only every two miles and the Gu they advertised was nowhere to be found. With all of the marathons that are out there, I would never recommend this race. It was poorly organized, managed and executed and the race directors should send an email to all participants apologizing for their ineptitude.

Good PR course

I'm from the north and love to come down to race in warm weather in the dead of winter. As far as expos, I couldn't care less. Real runners like running, not poking around looking for free water bottles and candy bars at expos. Crowd support? Who cares! That's what people like Lance Armstrong need to complete a marathon. I'll be doing this one again in a couple of weeks. With luck, breakn' my pr. Good luck folks! Happy running.

Laid-back & low-maintenance runners will love this

If you are into glitz and glam, this is not your race. I loved this race because of the great organization, the wonderful people working the event, the glorious finish around the track, the adequate supplies and porta-potties and the lovely, residential FLAT course. I got all the support I needed from the locals, and my husband was able to find me from the sidelines in several places. The race was small enough that it was easy to find other marathoners that I ran with along the way after the race. You'll get a great sense of community and support throughout the race. Do it!

Avoid This Marathon

This is a 3rd-rate marathon, which is poorly organized, and a major disappointment for anyone who has ever participated in a first-class event. Runners meet before the race in a 1950's-era high school gym with minimal bathroom facilities, the course goes along streets with vehicular traffic (for the first and last 2 miles), there are motorcycle "escorts" that result in runners breathing exhaust fumes, and there are very few if any spectators. I ran it one time and feel an obligation to tell others to take a hard look before committing yourself to this event.

Great flat, fast and no frills race

If you want to run fast, this is the race for you! There is no expo - who cares. There are no hassles with this race. It took 5 minutes to park and pick up the race packet. On race morning it was easy to get to the start and since it was raining, we stayed in the car until just minutes before the short walk from the school parking lot to the start. It was easy to get right on pace within the first mile. The course is beautiful, shaded (although not needed 12/05, it was cold and rainy) and flat. It is easy for anyone interested in watching you run get to various locations on the course and the finish line to see you. Aren't your friends and family the ones you want cheering you on? With big races, spectators have a hard time getting around the course and they're lucky if they catch you crossing the finish - and if they do, it seems to take forever before they can actually get to you. You do run on the shoulder of a 4 lane road near the end, but the shoulder is about as wide as a regular car lane - so not a big deal. I was worried about running on the grass toward the end, but even with all the rain we had it wasn't bad transitioning from road to grass to dirt trail to the track. The finish was great and my friends were there immediately after I crossed the finish line to give me a hug and help me with anything I needed. Didn't get any food - brought my own. Didn't get a blanket - brought my own sweatshirt. As always, take care of yourself. Hey, we're not babies, we're marathoners!! Enjoy the simplicity of it all and run a fast time!!!

Fast and Fun

Despite a "gully washing" rain over the previous 24 hours, there was a nice, flat course, volunteers were plentiful, especially the cheerleaders at Mile 24-25?, never had a problem at the aid stations, GU was available (but had to look in boxes) at aid station. Nice residential run for the most part, drivers along the course were courteous but apparently some previously not used to running on a (coned) 4-lane road. Hotel did allow you to shower in a common shower area.... Food and refreshments at the finish were good; wish I could have stuck around more but my family was freezing in the rain. Loved the warm soup! Last half-mile was challenging with all the rain. Very nice long-sleeve T-shirt, will definitely be back, and hope for a dry weekend in 2006.

I would do this marathon again.

If you're looking to qualify for Boston you might think about coming here. They advertise the course as being flat and fast, and they don't lie at all. The course is so flat it's unreal, with very few hard turns. Though this was my third marathon and the first that I truly got good training for, I set a PR by over 20 minutes on this course. There are next to no spectators but I've found that to be true for a lot of marathons. The organization was fairly nice but if you even think you place in your age group, check out the awards booth because they don't announce any awards.

Good FIRST Marathon

Good first marathon, very accurately promoted as a flat course. However, some of the typical race amenities just weren't there! No pre-race expo, no merchandise to remember the event by... such as hats, shirts, fleeces, etc. Also at the finish line, bad last 1/2-mile through the mud/woods/trail/puddles (but they've heard all this before). Also, NO Mylar blankets, which we really needed, man handing out the medals at the finish line could've at least taken it out of the little plastic bag and put it around our neck... but he seemed in a really foul mood. Lousy food at the finish. Otherwise use this marathon if you want to qualify for Boston, BUT don't expect any of the excitement/frills of a typical well organized large race!

Not a good marathon

I ran this marathon Dec 2004 and it was the worst marathon I've run. I've run about 8 marathons. The course was pretty good although there were barely any spectators supporting. No city participation whatsover. You had to meet up in some school gym prior to the race and throw your belongings in a pickup truck. At the end of the race your belongings were scattered on the grass. There was no expo. You picked up your packet at little sports stores spread out around the city. Their expo consisted of some racks of clothes put outside the store. Poorly organized. The course was neat but after the half-marathon ended, the marathon's had to run with and against traffic. There were no roads blocked off... almost as if we didn't matter since the half-marathoners were complete. I wouldn't run it again.

There is much room for improvement

I was really looking forward to running this marathon with all the rave reviews that I saw posted here on this website. As for a well-organized high quality small marathon, there was much left to be desired. I agree with the one reviewer who mentioned that this race is not supported very much by the city of Jacksonville. It was frustrating attempting to run a marathon while trying to avoid aggressive drivers honking there horns to basically get you off the road! At one point, the police officers failed to control the traffic flow at all. I collided with some half marathoners who were headed in the opposite direction while also trying to avoid vehicles which the police officers kindly directed onto the course with the runners. One runner shouted at the officers asking them why the officers were there at all. Believe it or not, I found it best to run right up the median of the road. This allowed the frustrated drivers on both sides of the road to pass me without any problems. I wasn't really thrilled with the course either. If you are looking for a fast PR course with crowd support, I'm certain that you would do better to look elsewhere. I could continue on here with several other observations but I will spare you the details.

Flat course - minimal excitement

Good and bad: cheerful volunteers at the fluid stations, and usually plenty of them. Nice shirts. Nice varietal goody bag. The course was flat as advertised, but unfortunate weather made the finish difficult, at best. Jaunting across a muddy, grassy soccer field into a root-studded dirt path was less than ideal for a fatigued runner. I was concerned for my safety - and walked a lot of it, hurting my final time and initiative. Not enough port-a-lets and poor traffic control in some of the neighborhoods and on the last stretch coming in. Packet pick-up/expo was disappointing - poorly organized and no expo, just a running store trying to make a buck. Signage to get there was horrible. Parking also poorly marked. Lots of fluids, but not the Gu as advertised. Not enough timing clocks for the last 1/2 of the marathon.

First-timer comments

This was my first marathon so I cannot make comparisons to others. I can say that the course was great except for that last bit leading to the track. The weather was crappy for spectators so I was happy that anybody was out cheering. The finish line food and drink was good. I was too beat to care if things weren't perfect.

Course is still great.

So this is my second Jacksonville Marathon and I have to say that the weather (chilly and rainy) somewhat put a damper on the experience but it's still a great course. The only complaint is the same complaint I had last year: The sodas in the little kid wading pools. Squatting down after running 26.2 miles to get a much needed Coke is not exactly the greatest feeling!

A Third-Rate Event

If you are looking for a first-rate marathon experience, AVOID THIS EVENT. This is a third-rate event, poorly organized, and lacking any amenities offered in most races. The first and last 2.5 miles of the course are on a four-lane highway with poor traffic control. Toward the end of the race, the runners are confined to the shoulder of the road running against traffic that occupies all lanes of the road. The runners must cross intersections with traffic lights which cause runners to stop for traffic. Pre-race, no beverages or food are served. The runners meet in a 1950's-era high school basketball arena with minimal bathroom facilities, which made for long lines. The course is flat and somewhat scenic, but there is no crowd support, and signage to distinguish the ½ vs. the full marathon course and mile markers are minimal. There are no chip mats on the course to measure split times. Runners share the roads with cars driven by residents who live near the course along with motorcyclists marathon volunteers who ride the course with the runners. If you are a first-time marathoner, this event is not for you. If you are an experienced marathoner with no expectations other than to try for a good finish time without any support from the race organization, consider it.

Much room for improvement in almost every respect

No race expo - just a running store for packet pickup and a few random discounted items. Early morning, organized, large area for start; absolutely terribly designed course finish (last few miles on very busy 4-lane road, then final ½-mile on rough, muddy, twisted off-road route to final 800 meters on track.) Very poor traffic control on most of the course. Great volunteers at fluid stations, but only offered energy gel once instead of advertised multiple times. Very little crowd support the entire course. Very little food or drink at finish line for slower paced runners. Host hotel didn't honor pre-arranged late checkout, also race brochure advertised host hotel as having made-to-order breakfast when in fact nothing was available early enough to get to race start in time. Very nice simple design poly-tech, long-sleeve T-shirt and nice medal for finishers. Overall, disappointing experience relative to race brochure/website.

Sub-division running in Florida?

I agree with the other comments about a flat course conducive to a PR. However, this is a marathon the city of Jacksonville does not support. Running primarily on a busy state road then through wooded sub-divisions does not produce many memorable moments. As for crowd support, a few hundred spectators at best. Actually more cars honking for us to get out of the way of the Sunday morning church-goers. As for organization, the race organizers need to make sure that the first water/Gatorade stop does not run out! Even us 4-hour marathoners need something to drink. Many of the Gatorade stops along the way had watered-down Gatorade which doesn't help effectively with electrolyte replacement. Similar problem with promised GU later in the race running out. Ran out. So sorry. As for race expo, there isn't one. Pick your stuff up at one of three running stores - easy in and out, but not much chance to meet other out-of-state runners prior to the race. Same comments as others about the last 0.5 miles/finish, however the race organizers have heard these comments for years and don't change.

This was a safe and flat course

I noticed only two problems. The mile markers (or clocks) were not at every mile, they were every two to three miles. There were not enough toilets either. I think there were six of them and the lines were fifteen to twenty minutes long. There were also some very positive aspects about the race. This course was flat and the weather was perfect. The streets were off-limits to traffic and there were plenty of police to help ensure our safety. There were enough water stations, however, the people handing out the water were not prepared at one station and I had to stop and wait a few seconds for my cup. Overall, this was a good race and I will run it again.

Will not do again

This is a great course for a PR, unfortunately the weather wasn't very good. I can't blame Jacksonville for that, but I did think this was a very disorganized race. The shuttle bus was 1/2 hour late, nothing was marked in the gym very well for packet pick-up, the marathon lost my chip and no one wanted to help, there were no space blankets at the end when I finished (around 4:15). The run at the end through the wet field didn't help either. The shirts and medal were nice, but I've been to many other races of the same size that were much better organized. It is a flat, fast course, but the markings made it a little hard to see where you are going next. I don't want to seem like a whiner, but I do think with a few improvements on the markings and pre-race organization this could be a race I'd want to return to.

Great for PR

Nice flat course, nice medal, great shirt, perfect running temps... yadda yadda yadda. Great for a PR. As for the negatives: the stretch from the road to the stadium at the last mile really is dangerous. Be careful. The food was sufficient at the finish line - but it's very difficult to eat half an orange! This may seem like a silly request... but quarter the oranges next year - lol.

Loved it once the rain stopped

Nice course and a well-executed event. The rain (4.75 inches the night before) obviously had to have an impact on the volunteers and organization, but they tried hard not to show it. The course was well laid out, and I loved seeing all the Christmas decorations on peoples' houses. The digital clocks along the course were helpful, and the post-race food was delicious. For negatives, I think the Bolles gym has reached its capacity for the hundreds of runners and their families who want to come watch the race. There was hardly room to sit or to stretch, and the bathroom lines were long. Additionally, more could be done to construct a pre-race expo, where vendors are brought in to attract potentially thousands of runners to their wares. The running store seems to have reached its limit. All in all though, an enjoyable experience and a race I look forward to running again. Sorry to the person below from Daytona. I'm from the Midwest, and I found the people of Jacksonville to be very friendly. A word of advice: don't let the Floridian promise of warm weather fool you. This place can get cold!

Great course

This is the most pleasant and PR-friendly course I've run. My impression may be due in part to the near perfect marathon weather we had this year: cool, calm, and overcast all the way. The only problem was some occasional light rain/showers during the race and a downpour the day before which made the grassy field at the finish a little messy. The organizers should push for some landscaping and/or paving to create a finish worthy of the rest of the course.

Small but enjoyable marathon

This was a small marathon, but a well-organized race. Very flat and fast scenic course. Lots of fun and well worth the money. I like the fact that I could identify the 1/2 marathoners by the different color race bibs. I thought the mile markers, race splits & motorcycle escorts were great. The support on the course was also great, thanks to the volunteers and the small crowd that gave me support even in the pouring rain. The post-race food was sufficient; the hot soup was a nice touch, considering the rainy conditions on the course. In addition to the food, we received a great, finisher's medal and long-sleeve shirt. Pretty nice for a small marathon. I want to say I had a great time. I missed the expo do to arriving late Saturday night. Although I'm not judging it, the weather did put a damper on the post-race atmosphere. But, I can imagine this being a fantastic event when they have a day with good weather. Try it!!! I will most certainly return to run this one again.

Okay... but needs some work

Even with the rain, I enjoyed my experience at the 2005 Jax Marathon. Didn't get the PR I was hoping for, but was still able to get a BQ. The course is very flat and the police did an excellent job controlling the traffic on the course. Almost too good, my wife found it hard to get around. Not a very spectator-friendly course. Although finishing on a track was nice, the cross-country trek you take over the last 1/2 mile was horrible. Because it rained most of the day, the soccer field and trail you run on before you reach the track were slippery and muddy. Some changes to the last 1/2 mile would have to be made before I would think about doing this race again.

Small, good, but not without flaws

This year's race was a great event -- especially for first-time marathoners like myself. Small enough to manage without being overwhelmed by the crowds. It was a nice course, beautifully flat through quiet neighborhoods. The only complaints stem from it being a small race: streets not closed in the middle of the route, a lack of consistency in placing and manning aid stations. That, and the 'volunteers', mentioned in previous years' reviews, puttering along on their big motorcycles, spewing exhaust in the runners' faces and blasting obnoxious music on their radios. I could have done without that. That's not to diminish the race. Nice t-shirt, nice medal, and although the crowd was small, it was enthusiastic -- the family of kids at mile 23 gave me the push I needed to finish. A good small-town marathon.

disappointed with the volunteers

First of all, let me say that the 1/2 marathon course was wonderful and the fans were great - especially at mile 12(?) with the cheerleaders. We loved them!! But the volunteers left a lot to be desired. It all started with packet pick up. The people were rude and short. Then as I came across the finish line, the man handing out the medals (in the blue hat and jeans jacket) got mad at me for not saying 'thank you.' I apologized and told him I couldnt breathe very well yet and he threw his hand in my face to brush me off! I have never been treated like this before in all of my 15 years of running. But back to the positive, the course was great, a little muddy but that added to the fun. But maybe next year you should find different volunteers.

Nice Winter Marathon

A great winter getaway marathon. The day of packet pick-up was convenient and by far one of the best race shirts I have ever received. The course is - for the most part - flat, but don't expect a lot of fans cheering you on or being extremely crowded w/ runners after the 1/2 marathoners finished. Do expect scenic neighborhoods, good traffic control and a very cool finish at the school track. One big comment: Add more porta-potties.

Nothing but the good stuff

This was my 12th marathon and I set a PR, beating the time I set 3 months earlier in Berlin. The start was a little chilly and it was cool all along the course through the end. It is amazing how flat the course is. Generally speaking I really enjoyed this marathon a lot; if you have tried large marathons (Chicago, Berlin, NYC) and want to experience something different without worrying about a number of things related to big events, this is the perfect option. I will run it again in '05.

Great race to race

I enjoyed this race because it was everything I thought it would be. The course is extremely flat, the weather was cool in the beginning and still cool towards the end, and the water stops were fully manned. My only complaint is that at certain points (mainly the end of the half-marathon course) it got a little hectic and confusing over which direction to get. This race is awesome. If you want to PR, for race selection this is the race to do. Additionally, the entrance fee was low in comparison to some of the other marathons I have run.

Great Marathon Experience

This would be a great first marathon or PR/Boston qualifier attempt course. It's totally flat, mostly smooth, and shaded. The majority winds through residential areas. The accompanying half marathon starts at the same time, so beware of those athletes pulling you through faster times than you should be running the first half! The second half was a bit lonely. There were times where I couldn't see the runner in front or behind me. There were some traffic-control issues the second half of the marathon as well, but I'm not sure what could be done. You can't forbid traffic in a residential area on a church morning! And as always, it was just a minority of self-centered folks to blame. The finish on the track was great! Things I'd like to see improved: - the broken pavement/grass you had to traverse in the last mile was tough and a bit dangerous for exhausted runners. - the awards ceremony was kind of disorganized and the shirt I was given as an award, not great. As a runner, I have tons of shirts, so giving one as an award isn't very rewarding. - more porta-a-pots at the start or more direction to where they're all located. I got the feeling there was more, but I'm not sure where. - More marathon merchanise. I only found a sweatshirt, which they didn't have in my size.

Great course and organization

Very good race. Could improve the start, which was very crowded and slow, by staging the start by estimated pace times. It took 5 miles for the crowd to break up.

Smaller event that delivers big on its promises.

A great event for non-elite runners to realize their goals whether those are going after a PR or trying to qualify for Boston. It had a strong 'home-towner-first' flavor from the registration and expo, to fan support, to carb loading dinner, to the motorcycle runner security escorts, who appeared to think this was more an event for them than for the runners. For example, the rider piloting a big Honda Gold Wing chose to blast the theme from The Brady Bunch through his really powerful stereo. No doubt, there will be a place in hell for him. Water stations were plentiful but some were painfully shorthanded around mid-course. Fortunately, stations and staffing were abundant over the last 8 miles with lots of GU (in choice of flavors). A note of caution: finishing on the stadium track requires going off-road from about mile 25.75 to mile 26 and stretches of this have footing over roots and ruts, so prepare to give back some time for safety's sake. All in all, a great little out-and-back event where runners' safety and security are so assured that participants could drop jackets, hats, gloves, etc. in the outbound pre-dawn chill and find their items waiting where they fell to pick up when they returned or after they finished.

Get ready to dodge cars

This is a great race - flat, relatively warm, pleasant running through nice residential areas. But get ready to dodge cars - traffic control is horrible. More than once I had to jump out of the way of cars speeding through the course. They also do not seem to care if runners wear headphones (I use the term runners loosely - what real runners would race in headphones?). This seems to be asking for trouble - uncontrolled traffic and oblivious runners. Nice course - poor planning.

JAX Marathon:

The JAX Marathon was my first marathon, in fact, my first run over 20 miles. I don't think I could have picked a better marathon to run; it's as advertised: flat, fast, shady, and pretty neighborhoods with not very large crowds (I like it that way) - but those present really were supportive. Race organization was awesome, and I say this for so many reasons: quick and painless day-prior registration; manned water/Powerade stations every two miles; plenty of porta-potties; good traffic control; good organization at the start and finish line, especially the finish, you guys have it wired; and all the food and drinks, plus the massages - what else could one want, except for maybe a better time? My goal was under 4 hours, finished at 3:46. I met some unforgettable people during the race, Meagan and Andy, I hope to see you next year. Meagan, I will be ready and trained so I can keep up with you, I wish you best of luck at Boston. Dixie and Keith, thanks for letting me know you appreciate what we (soldiers) are doing for our country, regardless of the politics involved, I hope to see you next year as well. I would be remiss if I did not mention what others might be wondering: Is the medal a nice one? Yes indeed, it's very nice with a red/white/blue ribbon, although, I might be somewhat biased - this is, after all, my first marathon medal. Suffice to say, many more marathons are on my roadmap - I'm hooked. Keep running long and strong, Godspeed and Happy Holidays, Jorge O. Soriano P.S. The Pizza Palace and the Hops Brewpub were outstanding!!

A fast, flat course with great weather!

The Jacksonville Marathon is a excellent opportunity to fine tune running skills on a fast, flat course that is well supported by the sponsor, First Place Sports. This year the weather was perfect, starting out very cool and dry and finishing with a nice breeze. I ran this marathon only 4 weeks after competing in the Philadelphia Marathon, and for this I should have my head examined. While I did set a PR, it probably would have been even better with more recovery time. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the race, the other runners and even the crowd. Don't expect large throngs of well-wishers, just a few kind-hearted people in lawn chairs drinking their morning coffee with words of encouragement for the racers. The water stops were well appointed with H2O and Powerade, and there were plenty of porta-potties along the course. The finish at the Bolles Stadium is great, and allows families to experience the marathon in a meaningful way. The technical race shirts were awesome, and the medal is above average (although the medal for the half-marathon is identical, just silver instead of gold-colored). Because I live in Jacksonville, I did not attend the pre-race pasta party or the expo, and therefore I can't comment thereon. All in all, the race is an excellent, low-frills marathon that, with proper training, almost guarantees a PR!

Great for PRs!

Greatly enjoyed this race - was my best time for a marathon (almost at Boston qualifier). If you're looking for a social marathon, this is not it. If you want a good, hardcore, focused PR, then you'll love this. Good organization, great sponsorship from New Balance (best shirt I've ever gotten in a race).

Well organized - small, flat, and fast

The Jacksonville Marathon was very well organized and very friendly to family following you on the course. Outside of spectators brought by you, there was very limited crowd support. The weather was ideal and the course was flat and 90% shaded (mostly two-lane blacktop) resulting in a PR. Scenery was minimal, consisting mainly of suburban streets and neighborhoods. On some stretches, especially after the 1/2 marathon concluded, runners were sparse. On some of the two-lane roads, you had to deal with local traffic, which should have been better controlled. Water/Powerade stops were plentiful and bathrooms adequate. Of particular note, the long-sleeve commemorative 'Coolmax' shirt was a great touch. The finish on the track was touching, with many young children joining the parents crossing the finish line, and it provided good photo opportunities for your supporters. I could have done without the trip around the grounds of the school which didn't allow for the best footing. Overall, I enjoyed the day and plan on Jacksonville again in 2005.

Cool course!

This is the first time I've done JAX and loved the course. It was mostly in residential areas where you could look at really nice houses and Xmas decorations. The streets were nicely paved and lined with trees. Weather was perfect. The race shirt was the best of any marathon I've done. The only negative is I wish there was more food at the end. I received a bowl of soup that I didn't really like. Also, putting the drinks in these tiny wading pools of ice was not a good idea... bending way down after doing a 26.2 mile run isn't really the best feeling. Otherwise, I will be there next year! Thanks to all the volunteers who worked their butts off!!

Overall excellent job; I would come back!

Perfect weather! I was probably overdressed... don't know if two layers (+stocking hat/gloves) hurt my time? I'm 60 and I needed a 4-hour marathon. I missed it by 1 minute & 8 seconds! Finish area, i.e. last .2 miles of the marathon course, need work/improvement! Police support was outstanding! Great water/Powerade stations and everyone was very, very friendly! I am a race director for a kids 2K, 5K and 10K race each June and I know how 'thankless' race directing can be! Your efforts are making a whole bunch of people very happy! Keep up the good work!

Flat, Fast Course; Well Organized

I was running in my first marathon after a 14 year hiatus. I was looking for a fast course and great weather. The Jacksonville Marathon didn't disappoint. The course was an out-and-back course winding through residential streets. Though the roads weren't completely closed, there were plenty of police officers controlling traffic flow. The weather was perfect for the race. It was approximately 45 degrees at the start and 52 by completion. There were plenty of water stops with Powerade as well. I do wish that the cups were larger. The stadium finish was cool and the post-race food was plentiful. Overall, this is a fun event with lots of friendly runners and volunteers. If you want or needs lots of cheering spectators, this isn't the right race for you. I definitely plan to come back next year.

Great race!

The Jacksonville Bank Marathon is the race to run if you are looking for a well run small marathon on a flat and fast course. I have to hand it to the race director and organizers this year, they did a fantastic job. Good move getting New Balance on board, the technical race shirt is awesome! My wife liked it so much that she had to have one and she doesn't even like to run! The volunteer staff was fantastic at every water stop. It makes a world of difference having well trained and attentive people manning water stations. My only complaint is that traffic control was not as good this year as last year. But I guess you can't stop everyone that is in a mad dash to get to church. Where the JAX police were present they did a fantastic job. The people of the Mandarin area of JAX are fantastic also!

Loved the Race.

Nice flat course. Not many spectators possibly due to the rainy start. Temps were comfortable and water stops abundant. Staff was helpful. My first marathon since 1992. I wanted to avoid the crowds of Chicago and was successful. I liked the finish at the HS football staduim. Yes, I hope to run this one again. Thank you for putting together a great race. I loved this marathon

I ran the New York City Marathon just 6 weeks ago before doing this one. I have never run a back-to-back marathon. I loved this course, the weather was great, and I haven't run this well in a race since 1995. I thought it was very well organized and I like being in a race with fewer runners. The course was so beautiful, the houses were grand and hearing the birds was a very sweet sound. I would recommend this race to anybody who wants to spend a beautiful day in Jacksonville, Florida.

Not happy with race director

I thought the marathon was a great experience. Flat course. I set a PR for myself. The one negative thing I have to say is, the race director wasn't fair. The woman who won the race, had (who I believe is her boyfriend), pace her towards the end of the race. He was not a race participant, did not run the whole race, and is an excellent runner himself, so he was a good pacer. I just don't think that is fair. I was running alone 90% of the race and had to work hard without any help, and I know I could've had a better time if I would've done that. People at the start of the race were told they couldn't aid people with bikes, so how is this any different? Another thing is, she is sponsored by the race director's running store. He defended her when my coach went up to complain about this. Honestly, I don't consider her a 'true winner'. 'No bird soars too high if he soars with his own wings'.

Fast, flat course - first Boston Qualifier for me!

This marathon is the best kept secret. I loved every aspect of this marathon from the time I landed in Jacksonville until the time I left. I had absolutely no negative experiences to talk about. Packet pickup was a breeze, easy access to carbo-loading dinner, convenient bus ride to starting line, GREAT course - beautiful scenery, and for me just the right amount of spectators (I enjoy being able to hear birds chirping while running). Finish was incredible with the announcement of all names and towns in the stadium, post-race snacks were great and there was easy, prompt transportation back to the hotels. I cannot wait to run this one next year. I just hope that the directors continue to keep the field of registered runners to a minimum. Boston here I come!!

All the makings of a PR marathon

It's flat, fast, and uncrowded. Put these qualities together, and you have all the makings of a personal record. The split of opinion about this race you may have noticed from other comments on this site really reflects the different marathon experiences some people are hoping for. If you want to run in a big city mega-marathon with lots of doo-dads in your goodie bag, marching bands with flaming baton twirlers at every waterstop, and enough fellow participants around you to make you feel like you're in a cattle drive, sign up for Chicago, NYC, or Disney. BUT if you want to run in a more quiet setting through well-shaded residential streets, run Jax. This marathon is also perfect for anyone looking to really bust a fast time. I ran it in 1998 and 2002 and had significant new PR's both times. The course is as flat as everyone else says. Because it is largely out-and-back, it is very easy to have a sense of how close you are to landmarks. This factor and the well-marked mile splits make it easy to stay focused on your pace. It's also small enough that you don't have to trade elbows with other runners. For instance at the start, I was able to stand on the side of the road within 25 yards of the line, kiss my wife goodbye when the gun went off, and mosey my way to the starting chip time mat all in 40 seconds. I didn't have to do any weaving around other runners after the 1st mile. Bottom line, I qualified for Boston for the 1st time at Jax, so I'm more than a little biased in favor of it. I think there are enough good qualities to overlook some parking and port-a-potty hassles. Run it if you are looking for a quieter marathon experience or really want to run fast.

Need to make this course more runner-friendly

The course is flat, generally shaded, and principally on asphalt roads, so it is fast, and it is in a beautiful section of town with many nice homes and public parks. The 2002 race took place on a cool, overcast morning in mid-December. It started in the dark, but there was plenty of light 15 minutes later. Overall, it was a very nice route. There were very few porto-lets on this course (none, as I recall, between about mile 6 and the half-marathon finish line, and there were only two there, with correspondingly long lines; ditto for miles 14 to 20, since the course was basically an out-and-back). I ran this race about 6 weeks ago, and, sad to say, my most vivid memory of it is that of guys urinating on trees and women desperately dashing behind buildings. I also remember what seemed to be an incredibly large number of police officers, who were actually a bit irritating as they traversed the roads back and forth along the course. There really seemed to be very little need for such extensive police protection, since most of the race took place in a very quiet residential area, early on a Sunday morning. The only significant group of spectators I noticed was at the end, where there was a large stadium with spectators, good refreshments, etc. An announcer called people's names and hometowns as they crossed the finish line to the cheers of the spectators. Other than that, there were very few spectators along the course - mostly dog-walkers, local homeowners, volunteers manning the water stops, and motorists waiting for a break in the runners. Frankly, many of the volunteers seemed less than enthusiastic. Ditto for some of the homeowners and motorists. With a few more porto-lets (at least one every 2 miles) and some enthusiastic volunteers at the water stops, this could be an excellent marathon. It certainly has a great route.

All-around Great Race

Yes this was my first marathon so I am no expert but I can not imagine a flatter, faster, more scenic (!) course. The organization was great (plenty of refreshments including tootsie rolls, gels, etc.), map of course, local hotel shuttle, and a great post race meal, medal, and tee shirt. One relatively minor drawback on the course. The end, where I must agree it appeared they needed mileage, took us through a forgotten neighborhood jaunt at mile 25 (many, I talked with afterwards including myself forgot about this on the map) and it seems like we were a bit back and forth on the soccer field. Of course at mile 26 it all seems pretty wicked anyway. No worries. Next year I will know. :-) Great marathon and memory. The JAX marathon will become an annual event for me now. Thanks to all the wonderful volunteers. Final Comment - stay away from 'The Hotel's' Pre-race CARBO-LOADING dinner. It was probably the only negative experience I had the whole weekend.

2002 - Best Weather in 10 years!

I've run Jax about eight times. The weather this year was the best since 1992. This is a very fast course in cool weather but can be miserable on a hot, humid day. It's a good medium-sized marathon. Fan support is sparse but those out on the course are very supportive. The race was moved from Saturday to Sunday for the first time this year. That seemed to alleviate some traffic problems. Contrary to other opinions, I really enjoy the 'cross country' finish as a means to wind up finishing on the track. It gives the race a unique and memorable twist.

Pleasant, flat course through mostly residential n

I was leary of this course based on numerous negative comments on this website. I came away thinking either they represented a conspiracy by disney , or they all ran it last year when the temp was 80 degrees and the heat index probably 86. This is a well organized, ideal course for a fast time given the right weather. Motorcycles do cruise the course, but they ensure a full lane in residential streets just for runners, a protective plus not a minus. The so-called cinders in the last approx. 1/2 mile is actually running across a soccer field( I used to play soccer) and a smooth path to finish around a cushioned track where the grandstands were sparsely filled. There was plenty of water and poweraid, with gu gels at 13 and 18 miles, I think. Though I was better prepared for this race it was the fastest of three I've run this year, and all three were in good weather.

Great Race-Perfect Conditions

A very cool start, but perfect conditions for a marathon. Flat, well marked course. Support was very, very nice and encouraging but Could have used more. The soup and the huge bagles were a real treat. I must say, I met some of the nicest Local runners I have had the privelege to run with. Real southen hospitality. Parking was very good, Could have had more port-a-johns on site. The ending of the race was a lot of fun, finishing in the stadium. Could have had a better sound system to announce the names of the finishers. Very nice metal. Area near race has lots of nice motels and great restaurants. The suggested restaurant for the carbo loading was great (nice local runner owns the business) Overall, very nice marathon. Jacksonville is one of the best kept secrets on the marathon circut. I take it over Chicago anyday!

A Solid Small-Scale Marathon

This was my 6th marathon and my 1st Jacksonville Marathon. The course was extremely fast and flat. At times, vehicular traffic was rather annoying and caused runners to break stride. Overall, the combination of the flat course and cooler temperatures made this race a great opportunity to achieve a PR and qualify for the Boston Marathon. In addition, the fans were very encouraging and supportive eventhough there were not many of them. The one major disappointment I had about the race was the last couple miles of the race. There needed to be a greater build-up leading to the finish. Instead, you were all alone in a subdivision running in a circle as if the course designer struggled to find 26.2 miles. The last mile led you through a trail with poor traction and muddy conditions. Finally, the last 200 yards ended on a track. Bad finish!

You can't control the weather...

After running the Dublin marathon seven weeks earlier, I was quite impressed with this 'little' marathon. I was able to use the port-a-john before the start with no problems other than waiting in line, which is to be expected. The volunteers were incredibly helpful and supportive, especially the teen-agers. There was plenty of water along the course. The sports gel Carb Boom! was also in abundance, lasting even for us at the back of the pack. Loved the medal and the flat course. Spectators were few and far between, which was surprising since a chunk of the course ran us through neighborhoods. I was grateful for those who came out anyway. I would not recommend this race for anyone who wants the hoopla of a Chicago or New York. If you're looking for a good, smaller marathon on a flat course, this is about as good as it gets. Unless of course, it's an unseasonably warm day...

Flat, fast course!

This was an easy course proceeding through some pretty neighborhoods. They kept you off of main roads and secluded. Traffic was a problem at times and the guys on the motorcylces attempting to control the runners vs. the traffic were fairly rude. No spectators to speak of, some areas of the course spectators were not allowed due to the narrow road I assume. It was fun to finish on the track and I didn't think the soccer field and parking lot were that bad to run over. I would run this marathon again simply because the course is so easy and I thought the volunteers were great. Very small, no hoopla but well run I think.

Could be better..

This was my sixth marathon this year. Jax marathon has the potential to be great, but not as long as the course is an open course. The traffic was a real problem. Lack of porta-lets didn't make things any better. With some work, this could be a nice marathon.... I hope that the 'powers that be' will consider it....

Not the greatest marathon I've ever run

This is the 2nd year in a row that I have run this race, The advertised weather temp said mid 50's, but this years the race starts in the mid to upper 60's at 7 am. Lack of porta potties means getting there early to ensure 'business' has been taken care of in time to race. Cars are routed down the roads that you run and they sometimes weave in and out of the runners as traffic is oncoming. The last 1/2 mile is a cross country race as you go through an uneven gravel/cedar chip parking lot, through the school maintenance yard, oh just follow the police tape! I personally had the worst race of my 5 marathon career but at 4:45 after the start there was no soup, no sports drinks to be had. Water and muffins only. At the finish they took off your chip and gave your finishers medal to you in the plastic bag. Thanks, I walked to my car, drank some Gatorade and left via the gravel parking lot where runners were still streaming through. I'll run more marathons, but not this one in my home town!

Poor, not impressed at all, again.

I've ran in several marathons and the Jax Marathon is the worst put together race. There was not much parking, the toilets were few and far between. This was the second year I ran this and was disappointed again. When we finished, there was no soup, no drinks, just water and bananas. After running 26 miles and drinking water, I needed sugar not more water. The race packets were weak compared to other races. The medals were nice. I've decided not to run the Jax Marathon again, sad when your from Jax.

Not a Bad 'First Marathon' Choice

This was my first marathon, so I appreciated the flat course and the shade. Don't be mislead to think that bulk of the course is on the St. John's River because it is not - really only one scenic residential area. Course finish is cool. Volunteers were great. Spectators sparce. More than likely, I'll run it again next year.

poorly organized

Coming in from out of town I found the following problems: PARKING (not enough, not marked), PACKET PICK-UP (not marked well, not organized, no sensible flow - after waiting in line someone directed the crowd to a wall on the other side of gym to get number instead of name), LACK OF PORTAPOTS (obviously). Started the race frenzied due to these conditions.

Not doing this one again

I must caveat that this review is based on the HALF marathon - not the full. Although I now live in JAX - and this should be considered my hometown race - I will never do it again and will not recommend it to slow/beginning runners. The race is small - about 1000 runners total for the full and half combined. I would not call this event friendly to slow/beginning runners or walkers The race directors gave an early start for the MARATHONERS needing more than 6 hours (about 30 minutes) but not the Half marathoners needing more than 3. Of course, they also did not say that they would close the half marathon after 3 hours. No word ANYWHERE (website, brocheure, race packet)!!! The race folks had advertised water and ultima on the course every 2 miles. Well - that was the case - until mile 8 - then no water till 11 and some water at the end of the half marathon. The course is flat and runs through Jacksonville's expensive neighborhoods. The oaks and spanish moss are lovely - I wish I could say the same thing for the race course. The safety director (yeah right) came back to us at mile 11 and said 'want a ride?' I looked at her and said NO! She then told us to get on the other side of the road where we could not see the cars coming - yes the course had cars on it - and they were doing 50ish..... I told this woman - as politely as I could muster that I was not going to cross the street since if I did - I would not be able to see the cars and since the course was not protected from the traffic and there were no sidewalks in the neighborhoods and the side of the roads were drainage ditches. She was not too happy. We fininshed the race at 3:40:33 -- no race staff at the finish, no mats, no food, no water - nothing. The race information had said there would be busses to bring half finishers back to the start -- and there was not. Overall - had they told the complete truth about the course (traffic, no sidewalks, etc) and about the closing of the half marathon - I would not have started this race.

Decent race.

Well organized, pancake flat, very shady course, through a nice section of town. Last mile, which cuts through a sandy field, needs to be rerouted. Finish on high school track is a nice feature.

ok race

Flat course and good support. Water and sports drink every 2 miles, and gel at 15 and 20. Course got boring and repititious and had a terrible last mile that winds through a dirt bumpy parking lot (the last thing you need after 25 grueling miles in the Florida heat.

Fast and flat

The course is completely flat with no hills and lined with trees most of the way. The race is well organized, although crowd support is thin.Arrive early because parking goes fast.
