My Favorite Marathon!!!!

The organization and course support and mission is awesome. Second time running this race and would highly recommend anyone seeking a great marathon course to give it a try. Emotional AF when passing by the hospital and seeing the kids. Not a dry eye around. The pickle shots on the course were fun and I admit to even taking a few random shots from the friendly community block parties!

Half Runner

I ran the half marathon. Was very impressed with the organization, expo, race day set up, great track a little emotional, running through St. Jude's. Was great to support such an important organization. The fan support was incredible for the whole route.

Didn't love it

This is first and foremost a fundraiser for St. Judes and it comes off like it. The race is really more of an afterthought. St. Judes is an awesome organization and if you want to raise money for them, you should do this race. If not, find another one. The course is fine with a lots of water stops and spectators. It has some hills but I wouldn't call it hilly. The race was delayed by an hour due to weather that ended up not being that bad, but I don't fault the RD for keeping people safe. Lastly, there were 24,000 half marathoners and 3,000 marathoners so you can imagine who the race is really designed for.

127th full marathon! Tough, hilly course!

This was my first time running the race. The course had changed from last year and it was quite hilly. The race was delayed an hour due to rain by an hour. First time I saw that. The rain would have helped keep me cool! Muggy weather. Great crowds throughout the course and lots of water stations, etc., informal aid stations included alcohol, etc. Very friendly people in Memphis and I got to be on tv the first night there giving my opinion on police brutality. Great bbq restaurants on Union Street and of course a pleasant tour of Graceland as well. Worth doing this race just for the friendliness of the residents and Lyft drivers. Looks like a lot of people want to see Trump v. Springer in 2020!

Great race overall

This was overall a great race. The fan support was really incredible throughout the race with a lot of cheering, music, and many handing out food and drink. The section through the hospital was especially empowering. I thought overall the organization was well done. The expo and packet pick up were well planned, especially considering the number of people attending. The aid stations were well spaced, well manned, and covered the water, Nuun, and gel needs. The finish area was really well done with the finish in the stadium where there was plenty of space to recover before going through the line for food. The pizza, donuts, and soup were all really good and certainly a big positive in my book. Overall, I thought the course was good. It had a few rolling hills, but overall was good. Traffic control throughout the race was really well done and had to involve a staggering number of Memphis' finest. There were two things I would change to make it better. First, the corral system at the start could improve. It was a confusing mess that included no delineation in the corrals, runners clearly in the wrong spots, and non-runners in the way. I know some races almost seem militant in controlling who gets in specific corrals, but that can make a better start for the runners. I would also re-consider the last 3-4 miles of the race. Looping back and forth through an ugly industrial area for the sake of getting miles really pulled down the overall great course. Maybe a bigger loop through a different neighborhood or around a park would be a better option. Overall a great race though that I would recommend.

Great cause, great crowd, mediocre course

This is a funny marathon. Not for everyone, but if you are looking for a race with a good cause and a huge fun party atmosphere, you can have a great time here. The crowd really gets into the race. Lots of people along the course from beginning to end. Spectators are giving away all sorts of food and drink, live music plays here and there throughout the course, Many, many people thank all the runners by name and call them heroes. I was called a hero more times during the marathon than during the rest of my life combined. Which felt good. The race organization is basically OK. Registration was smooth. A few weird glitches: first, there was no schedule of expo speakers anywhere except for a sign in the middle of the expo-it was easy to come and go without realizing there were any expo speakers at all. Second, they switched the race hydration option only a few weeks before the race-it was only nuun and water on the course where powerade had been also promised in the literature. Third, a lot of the on-course hydration was badly done: cups filled with barely enough fluid to wet my lips; other cups filled to the brim sloshing liquid onto my shirt. But the volunteers were all very friendly. The bad part of the race experience is the course itself. It's boring and bleak for great stretches-you are running through blighted urban wastelands with crumbly roads, and you are right alongside traffic for long periods. There are lots and lots of turns, especially at the end where you have to run a whole pointless 3- or 4- mile loop under and over a traffic cloverleaf and the surrounding neighborhoods. All in all, a worthwhile experience. Not one I am likely to repeat, but it is not hard to see why people like this race.

Couldn't be better

You will be warmly greeted by Memphis. The race weather was great, the spectators were the best I've seen, and plenty of aid stations, porta potties, etc. The finish line food is abundant and good. One word to the wise - you corral yourselves according to the time you think you will run, as opposed to some races that assign you. Add that to a crowded race, esp first 11 miles until the half splits. The result is trying to navigate around people who should've been in slower corrals. I don't mean conservative starters, I mean walkers and people in jeans.

Excellent mid sized urban marathon

This marathon is a big fundraiser for St Jude's Children's Research Hospital. It includes a 5k, 10k, all marathon, and full marathon. Many of the runners in all events run as St Jude's heroes which includes different levels of fundraising commitments that get you extra amenities. The course is a mix of urban streets and residential areas highlighting some of the sites in Memphis, but with only a very limited stretch along the Mississippi River. The course is generally rolling with only a few hills of note. The start is near AutoZone Park and is done in waves 3 minutes apart. There are water stops about every 1 mile to 1 1/2 miles along the course. This year they had water and Nuun at each top and some Gu at later stops. You run with a fair number of people until the half splits off at 11 miles and then things get a lot less crowded. You run past the finish with about 3 miles to go and do a weird loop before coming back to the finish. The finish is in the outfield of AutoZone Park. You have to climb up some metal steps to get into the stands and then up several concrete steps to get to the food and drink. Food was limited and somewhat picked over by the time I got there at 4 1/2 hours. There is beer (2 free) if you partake. You then must walk around the entire outfield area to get back to the gear check area. The course supposedly has a 6 hour time limit, but there were times in the results that were up to 7 hours. Overall very well organized, but I was not a big fan of the urban course with too many turns.

Unforgettable Experience

Everything about this race was first rate. It felt great knowing that the event garners lots of funds for St. Jude Hospital. (It was especially touching running past the hospital and witnessing such strong support for the runners from patients and workers. Talk about putting pain in perspective!) The expo was fun and varied. Memphis offers no shortage of great dining. I especially enjoyed McEwen's and Flight. The Double Tree on Union was very well-located, though I would have chosen the fantastic Peabody if it hadn't sold out. The course was well laid out with a few inclines, but nothing too difficult. Support and volunteers were terrific. The only things I would change are the late start (8:30 AM) and the finish area food layout. I found pizza and Power Ade, but I have a feeling I missed some other offerings in the big loop around the stadium. (There are also stairs to walk up, but I didn't mind.) I usually stay away from the larger races, but the incredible spirit and thoughtful organization of the Memphis Marathon made me so glad I chose to run.

Wow! What a race!

I ran this race with a group of friends who were running for a young boy in our community who is battling cancer. This was such an unbelievable marathon and experience, I would recommend it to anyone and would love to come back to run it again. The course was great, the organization was fantastic, nice shirt, and beautiful medal. Not to mention running through the St. Jude Hospital campus with all of those people out cheering you on sent chills down my body. Spectators throughout a vast majority of the course just kept saying, 'thank you for running for St. Jude.' It was truly a humbling experience. If there is one downfall it would be that I would have loved to have had some Memphis BBQ at the finish instead of Domino's, but that's just me being picky. Again, this was a great event and worth the trip.

Best Spectators Ever

Earlier this month, I ran the St Jude's Marathon for the first time. December is a great time to run in Memphis because the weather's perfect! It was blue skies and sunny throughout the course. The beginning was tough because the low was under 30 degrees Fahrenheit. But by the time the race began, the weather was already in the 40s. All in all, this is a fun course with great spectators. Also, the signs out there were hilarious. There aren't too many hills throughout the course. There's a grinding incline around mile 23 or so, but nothing grueling if you train normally for hills. Favorite parts of the run include a beautiful sweeping decline along the Mississippi River early in the run. It provides for breathtaking photos of downtown Memphis. Early in the race, Beale St is kind of nice too with excellent crowd support. Then somewhere around mile 8 maybe, you actually run thru St. Jude's Hospital and you see where you donation for this grade marathon goes towards. Lastly at around mile 15, there's beautiful scenery around Rhodes College and then on into Hein Park. Throughout the race, the water stop support is excellent and the crowd. I've run 19 marathons and have not run into better spectators (not even the Brooklyn Crowd at the NYC Marathon). I enjoyed this marathon so much, I plan to run it again every other year.

You will love running thru St. Jude's

As previous reviewers have noted, your heart will be touched by running thru St. Jude's Children's Hospital with the children and parents out there cheering you on. The expo is very nice for a race of this size. There were at least 3 GU spots and a water stop every mile. The post race food was very good but some items like the donuts and fruit was cleared out by the 5K and half marathoners but there was plenty of pizza and chocolate milk left. My only complaint is the last few garbage miles of the race. The race course should be adjusted so you can run back to Children's hospital for a 2nd time. That would give you a great boost to finish the race.

A Terrific December Marathon

I am really glad I ran this race. I was able to knock Tennessee off of my list and have fun while doing it. The expo was ok and organized but getting inside was a bit chaotic. Several Hundred cars were jammed up at the Convention Center on Friday night trying to figure out how to get their packet while also avoiding the $10 - $15 parking fees. This was not a good way to start the experience. How about jacking up the registration fees by this amount and renting the lot out so that parking can be free on Friday night? Once getting through the jam, I simply parked about 3 blocks away and made the walk. I would recommend this strategy to all. Packet pick up was well organized and friendly. Race day morning was chilly and a great day for running. It was nice to have a person gabbing to the crowd that you could actually hear and understand. U2's Beautiful Day and Bruce's Born To Run played often before the start which is always awesome. Course was nice although quite a few pot holes. I saw a few folks go down. You got to run near the zoo where I heard the apes howling. Rhodes College was full of great sights. The water stations were all well staffed and included many friendly faces. At mile 1 upon turning the corner, there was a large group of special needs folks cheering. This is just so heart warming. The course is very well marked and each and every mile marker was visible from afar, which is a pleasant change from some races of late. As a slower runner it was also nice to be on the course with many people who were much slower than me. I think the running for a good cause brings out many people who would not otherwise give a marathon a shot. The finish line was a bit of a let down. It was great entering the stadium. This reminded me of Cleveland and Huntington. But as you cross the line you are forced to walk up steep steps to get to where you are going. Then once you scale the steps, you have to circle the concourse to get food and drink. It was nice but a real hassle after just running 26.2. Water at the finish line is always a nice sight. There were thousands of Domino's Pizzas at the finish. Sadly, they all appeared to be cooked at the same time. MUCH earlier in the day. Each slice was handed out with a smile and an apology. It was ice cold. The race was a nice experience and I am glad I ran it. I would recommend to anyone trying to knock Tennessee off of their list to give this race a shot. Be sure to register early (certainly before Thanksgiving) as you may get shut out. When in town, you must see the Lorraine Hotel. It is always nice to mix in a marathon with history. Memphis is one awesome town. Good job everyone!

Well organized, spectators, need improvements

Great cause, wonderful logistics and venues. Spectators throughout the race if not super in shear numbers. Course road surface chewed up/potholes as I spotted quite a number of falls. Could not understand why the finish line is not pushed further up into the stadium so spectators could actually see finishers without binoculars. A small loop nearing the finish could be eliminated by shoving the finish line further up. Might consider the convention center for the start so that participants could stay inside in cold or rain prior to the start. It was difficult to enter the corral from the side streets coming from the ballpark. I would explore advising people to enter alternate side streets back from the start line basis predicted pace. Slow people could not get back to their proper corral areas and were forced to start with faster runners.and made for a mess. Gatorade and water was mixed up together at the aid stations so it was a task figure who was offering what. Fantastic to have aid stations every mile and fully stocked and staffed-loved it. Music great for most of the marathon, but then it seemed to completely stop after mile 20 when the runners needed it most. Staying Downtown worked great. .

Great event, incredible cause, recommended!

This was only my second marathon so I don't have much to compare it to but I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and highly recommend this event and the city of Memphis to everyone looking for a December marathon. One cannot ask for a more worthy cause than St Jude and you even get to run through the hospital campus early and late in the run. One cannot describe the feeling of seeing the little patients lined up to cheer on runners as they pass through the campus. What really stood out was the number of times I heard 'thank you' from volunteers all over the course. I bet I heard someone tell me thank you for participating no less than 100 times that morning. Everyone at the bag check, start line, water stations, and finish all said thank you to us for helping St Jude. The course was mostly flat with some small inclines over and under various roads and the roads are in good shape. It is mostly run on city streets but there is some good scenery of the Mississippi River and Overton Park. The start was very well organized and proficient in getting everyone off in a timely manner. I was in one of the rear corrals and I was able to begin within about 20 minutes from the start. There are aid stations and porta-potties at every mile and GU at several as well. There were several bands along the course for the first half but not too many on the second half. The run ends in Autozone Park which houses the AAA team for the Cardinals so there were tons of people present to cheer on the finishers. Food and drink were great at the end. There was so much pizza, donuts, fruit, snacks, and drinks (including a beer garden) that people were taking whole boxes of extras home with them. I highly recommend this run for anyone looking for a fun experience (Memphis is a great friendly town), easy course, or a great cause to support.

Autozone Park has elevators!

When you finish the race you DO NOT have to walk up the stairs in the baseball stadium. There are elevators near the FIRST AID area. Use the elevators and be kind to your legs:)

Enjoyable event but pick up is a hassle

I've run the half and whole multiple times, and there is no better cause to run for than this one. My biggest gripe (every year) is that it is a Saturday race, with no Saturday packet pick-up and the Friday night cut off is 9:00. Coming in from out-of-town is next to impossible if you work for a living.

I'll be back every year!

What an awesome race. The course was great, not too flat, not too hilly. Loved the wave start to keep down congestion in the early parts of the race. Organizers compensated for unseasonably high temps with water stops every mile. The best part, running through the St. Jude campus. Can't imagine a more meaningful race! I'll be back every year, some for the full and some for the half, but I'll be back every year!

Good race for a great cause

Race was great. Spectators were a little less after half split (expected). Aid stations were well stocked. Volunteers were great. Post-race food was plentiful and diverse. Plenty of beer also. Finishing in stadium was cool. Wave start was very organized and efficient. I PR'd!

Very inspiring, a bit harder than I expected

I really enjoyed this marathon. It's for a great case & the spectators are fantastic. Lots of music, water stops, & the volunteers were still full of energy & enthusiasm for even us slowbies. But who came up with making us finish by having to climb the stairs of the stadium after completing 26.2 miles!!

Great experience.

Plenty of aid stations and 3 with gu. course was well marked and clocks at every mile. A lot of food in the finishers area including pizza and beer! course had some rolling hills to keep it interesting, but none were challenging. There were 2 u-turns in the course that took away some momentum, but those areas had tons of spectators and sort of necessary for the great finish on the warning track. I recommend the race for both fast runners and recreational.

Great Race! You should run this one...

Ran this St. Judes Marathon in December 2011. Great city and a fun marathon to run. Well organized, you get to see many hi-lights of Memphis and very motivational running thru St. Judes early on. Very positive vibe to this race start to finish. PS Check out the Ducks at the Peabody Hotel and have a Jack Daniels post-race. Pretty cool!

great race, will be back

This was my first time running in Memphis and it was great. I raised money as a St Jude Hero and received lots of pre-race communication. The expo was pretty typical, did not experience any problems. The pasta party was a tear jerker hearing about kids with cancer. Race morning: great, you could stay warm in the indoor part of the stadium, plenty of bathrooms. Wave start went well, was crowded the first couple miles but not as bad as other places. Hills were all a matter of perspective, I didn't think it was anything. I thought the crowd support was good. In the last 6 miles people were very supportive, calling out your number and cheering you on. Aid stations were great and just after every mile marker from 3-25. It was fantastic to have them so predictable. Finishing in the stadium was awesome, getting to take a shower was great too. Food as mentioned was good, loved the soup. My only complaint was the pacers, 4:10. They were all over the place on times. We would approach a mile marker and they would call out the goal time, we could be 10 sec ahead one mile, 40 the next, back to 15 the next, all over the place irrespective of hills. Overall a great experience and I will be back

Good Marathon-Glad I Ran It

Great organization. Nice course. Good aid stations. Good spectators. Not much critical to say. It would have been nice to have run through St. Jude at the end of the marathon, could have used that inspiration in the late miles. There was a decent amount of running right next to busy traffic, so exhaust was a little bit of an issue, but what can ya do? It's 26 miles! Overall, recommended.

First time doing the full marathon

It's a really good marathon. It's run well, expo is average to above average, shirts and medals are usually good (or at least they've been good the last two years, my total experience with the event). Crowds are good in most places along the route. The course itself is relatively flat and the weather (again the last two years) has been very cooperative - a little chilly at the start but overall a nice day. Finishing in Autozone Park (the St. Louis Cardinals AAA affiliate team) is a pretty cool way to finish the race. Add in St. Jude as the cause and it's one I recommend.

Decent marathon, but focus is on the 1/2'ers

Pros: Water stops- every mile! The Gatorade was also not very potent, which was nice. GU's handed out on the course 4 times Fan support- many spectators played loud music and were dancing and cheering very enthusiastically. Great finish line in the AutoZone stadium Weather- Perfect! The temperature at the starting line was 46 degrees. The finish was around 65 degrees. The sun was shining and there was only a small breeze. 6. Post- race food- SO much food for the runners: Pizza, Soup, Chili, Beer, Gatorade, and more 7. Plenty of beer at the finish (unlike Go! St. Louis) 8. Nice technical finisher's shirts Cons: The focus was on the 1/2 marathon- the fans definitely thinned after the 1/2 The marathon actually repeated part of the course Volunteers at the expo- I hate to complain about the volunteers, since they are volunteering...but we asked some questions at the Information Booth, and the volunteers really didn't have a clue. For example, we asked the Information Booth about the gear check. The volunteer said that the gear check was not secured, and that you had to make your own tags. However, once we got home, we realized that indeed that was a bag tag included, and the gear check was completely secured. We also asked about GU's on the course, and were told that there were none- but there were 4-5 GU stations! Course marshalls were not policing all the intersections, and my spectator told me that she witnessed a car accident, as well as several near-accidents with runners and drivers! Eeeks... The last mile of the race was not near the crowds, and it was on a freeway underpass. This was a bit of a downer, even though the actual finish line was great. Always a great race

This is one of my favorite races. Not only is it for a good cause, but it is not too big and very well organized. Running through the St. Jude campus is amazing. There are a few moderate hills on the course, but nothing major. The only thing I saw that was lacking was there was no fruit along the course; only water/gatorade and gu gels at certain stations. Lots of spectators in key areas, but many areas were without crowd support. I would still recommend this marathon to anyone who has never run it.

Great cause, great race!

This is a perfectly-sized race with great organization and support. Water stops and porta-potties every mile with great spectators for the first half. The second half has the water, gel, and potties, but almost no spectators. I am really glad I was running with some friends, because it got a little boring. The roads are kinda bumpy, and there were several places where they were down-right rough. I actually turned my ankle at one water stop. Any shortcomings don't change the fact that this is a great race. I have done the half here three other times, and this was my first full. I couldn't have picked a better race to do!

Challenging course/Great organization

I saw comments on this course being flat when I first checked into running this race. It is NOT flat. It is by no means extremely hilly but other than the stretch by the Mississippi River, the course always seemed to be inclining either up or down. For folks that care about that stuff, be warned. Race organization was great. Crowds were light to nonexistent after the halfers split off. Water stations were every mile. A couple of stretches of road had a VERY noticeable camber if you didn't run the middle of the road. Location of the start/finish relative to downtown lodging was wonderful! No shuttles!!! All in all, a nice event for a good cause.

Ran the Half as a St. Jude Hero. well-organized; St. Jude and volunteers did everything for runners except the actual mileage; wonderful pasta dinner the night before the race; great support from City of Memphis; great course; fabulous cheering crowds; wearing the Hero shirt made me a rock star for the weekend! great perks for Heroes! nice expo; nice weather; nice medal; set a PR by 10 minutes. amazing experience running through the St. Jude campus to cheers and thanks of crowd!!! definitely want to run it again!

Good race, would recommend it

The race started with a young lady singing the national anthem which was very touching. All the water stations were well stocked and supportive. Various crowd support along the way which was very encouraging in many ways. Good variety of food at the finish and the way it was handed out was effective and efficient. Nice touch with the pictures of Elvis at the end and Elvis signing along the way. Don't think I would change anything.

Great marathon for a greater cause

Course is billed as not hilly but it has some short steep inclines - do not be deceived. My biggest complaint is that many of the roads that you run on for 3-5 miles slope significantly towards the sides. This forces you to run as close as possible to the white line in the middle of the road. I tried to run tight corners and tangents as much as possible but my Garmin still said I ran 26.5 miles. Spectators were not all that enthusiastic. My pace team leader had to stir many of them up to cheer and make noise when we would run by - with the exception for the St Jude's campus itself. Expo was fair and easy to navigate. The highlight was meeting Hal Higdon and hearing him speak. Swag was nothing spectacular for the price. After race food was bountiful. Hot soup and hot chocolate are a great idea to prevent a rapid drop in your core temperature after running.

Very organized, and great post-race food.

I am from Memphis, so of course I had to fly in from Austin for my first marathon. I also did Austin, so I can only compare the two. The course in Memphis was flat and had great fan support for most of the race. They provided GU and had water at every mile. The post-race food was plentiful and included pizza, fruit, bagels, etc. I have realized that these are big pluses after doing the Austin Marathon and supporting friends at their marathons. I also think this race was very organized and it was great crossing the finish line without a traffic jam. Great race!

Great Cause - To Go Along with a PR

I would recommend this marathon. The organization was great, and I enjoyed the course - particularly the stretch along the Mississippi River, Beale St., the St. Jude Campus, and the finish in the ballpark. Excellent post-race food. Cool December weather allowed for a PR opportunity. Really nice finisher's medal. Enjoyed staying at a hotel within walking distance of the start and finish.

Great Race and a Fun Time in Memphis

This was my second St. Jude and it was even better the second time around. The expo was well run, the course is fun but challenging, the spectators (especially the kids) are great, and it's just an overall awesome time. The race size is just right (not as large as the Country Music Marathon). The race, along with all the good food and fun Memphis has to offer, makes for a fun weekend.

Amazing!!

What a great event for such a great cause. This is one race I will try to make year after year. It was windy and there were some hills, but I think what got the best of me was the 85% humidity. Still, a great race. I don't think you could go an entire block without having someone cheering for you. Even the local police officers, who were great at traffic control, were cheering us on. And some folks, in their cars at traffic lights, would roll their windows down and encourage you. Great race, great fans, great expo. The finish in the Radbird's baseball park was great as well.

Still Great!

Ran St. Jude Memphis Marathon in 2004 and 2005. Although the race is twice as big as the last time I ran it, it still is very well organized and the course is outstanding. I especially enjoyed running through the St. Jude hospital campus. Everything was outstanding - even the weather. The only dim point is my tech shirt. Although I am 5' 7" and weigh 145 lbs., the medium is too small. At least my wife can wear it. I would definitely recommend this race to both first-timers and seasoned marathoners. I will be back!

Amazing Race - Deceptively Hilly

Awesome race! Organization was amazing - wave start worked perfect, and aid stations were located where planned and were stocked with enthusiastic volunteers and described supplies. Spectators (especially on the St. Jude campus) were plentiful and exuberant. The course was deceptively hilly - especially the last 10K. Hills were not steep, but rolling - and lots of them. Would run this one again for the cause alone - but a great race to boot.

Amazing Race - Memphis-Style!

Imagine a race with a water station at every mile, digital clocks astride every well placed mile marker and a stadium finish where the name of each finisher is broadcast over a PA system to a throng of cheering fans. Imagine bands lining the streets and scores of fans calling you a hero for supporting St. Jude as you run. Imagine all this and running through a world=class children's cancer hospital campus where the smiling, pint-sized patients hold their hands out to receive "five" as you run by. This race is not a figment of your imagination. They call it the Memphis- St. Jude Marathon, and there is no marathon on earth where you feel better about yourself for running than here. The St. Jude mission is to fight childhood cancer and a part of your registration fee is donated directly to St. Jude. All along the route people are thanking you for being there and supporting this most noble cause. The race itself is well organized from start to finish and the on course support is second to none. While there are a few small hills the course is not all that difficult and this could be a PR course for many. The wave start system works well to decompress the early miles but does make the second half of the race (where the halfers break off at mile 12) a little desolate at points. Still, this is one really fun race to be a part of and ranks as one of my all-time favorites.

Something so wonderful...

This was my first marathon (St. Jude Hero) and I am so happy, grateful and thrilled to have been part of something so wonderful. There was so much to see along the way and the best part was going through the St. Jude campus and the amazing support throughout the whole race made it worthwhile to keep going, no matter how much it hurt. This is one marathon to make your first. I am going to make it my second (marathon).

My first half marathon - a PR and a great experience. What else is there? A little chilly - 29 degrees - but it's in December, so you can't complain. And it's a great cause to boot.

First marathon 3 years ago, and a PR this year.

I love the expo, wave start, fans, finish, and beer stand that those nice people have in their yard every year (about 16 or 17 miles in).

Well organized; thanks, 3:30 pacers

I've run the full twice ('08 and '09) and will be back. Nice, medium-sized race, and the wave start is great. I particularly want to thank the 3:30 pacers from 2009 - they were right on target and very courteous about explaining how water stops and bathroom breaks would be handled. Although they pulled away from me at the end, because of them I reached my personal goal and had a great time doing it!

First Marathon+Memphis=Excellent Experience

This was my first marathon. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire event. The expo was well organized, although a little confusing with getting bib, bag and shirt in three different places. We stayed in the Renaissance Hotel, less than a mile from the start/finish area. (Highly recommended!) Weather was really cold. I failed to bring thick socks, so my feet were really cold. Loved the singing Elvises and music at nearly every mile. There were fluids and porta-johns at every mile. (Mile 9 ran out of cups when I got there, by the way.) Great finish in the stadium. Pacers were nice and helpful as well. Running through the St. Jude campus was heartbreaking. Lots of kids and family out cheering.... Cons: When the half-marathoners turned off at mile 13 to finish, and I was left almost alone. The last half of the race was a bit lonely. Luckily the spectators were still upbeat and encouraging. Overall, a very well run event!

Well organized event - ran the half

Memphis is my home town, so note my bias. The race entries are capped, and there is a wave start so I never felt crowded or cramped for space. The race covers a number of Memphis sites of note. There is great crowd support for the entire half course along with music and other entertainment. Water and sports drinks are provided at each mile. Finish in the baseball stadium and recover on the outfield. It is a fun race in a fun city.

Overall great marathon

This was my first marathon. I ran the time I was going for. The food was great. The t-shirt is only okay. You would think they would use some art from the St. Jude's kids. I enjoyed the course. The number of spectators was right for me, but I know many people want more. The last few miles are sparse, but the end made up for it.

A Great Race Worth Running!

This is a wonderful, early winter marathon and I would definitely do it again. I loved the southern hospitality, the friendliness of the runners, running for a good cause, the stadium finish, the pacers at 5-minute intervals, the long-sleeved t-shirt and hat, the Elvi, and the fans. The first half of the course did have more fans and was generally better than the second half, but this isn't an uncommon phenomenon at marathons of this size. Run Memphis if you ever get the chance!

Second Time Around - Still Great!

This was my fourth marathon and the second year in a row that our group traveled to Memphis. The overall race organization is great. We stayed at the Marriott across the street from the expo, so once we parked our car when we arrived, we didn't drive again until we left to go home. The trolleys weren't running as promised in the morning, so we walked to the start, which wasn't a problem as we used that as our warm-up. Splitting the half marathon and marathon bag drop was an improvement from last year. I agree with the prior post that the camber of the roads seemed worse this year. Aid stations every mile were wonderful! Post-race food was great, as was the picture with Elvis afterward! We loved downtown Memphis and Beale Street afterward; however, next year we will do a different race for variety's sake. I highly recommend this race - it's well worth it!

One of best races I've done

This was one of the most well organized races I'd ever participated in; the race director did an excellent job. Expo was small but had a good variety of exhibitors, and there was plenty of parking in downtown area near the race start/finish area. It was really nice to have AutoZone Park available for bag drop and relaxing before and after the race, and indoor bathrooms were great to have for last-minute race attire changes. There was plenty of space at the race start area to stretch and get lined up in the proper corral without being jammed into a "cattle chute" - like the start of the Dallas White Rock Marathon. Course had a lot of slightly hilly sections, but you get to see beautiful residential areas of Memphis and spectator turnout was very good, considering the chilly weather. And having the hot showers in the baseball team's locker room was really great; with that and plenty of food afterward, it was a perfect way to end the race. Only bad things are having to go up a ramp to get to the finish in the baseball park, and having the race on a Saturday, which means taking a day off from work to make it to the race expo. Other than that, this is a great marathon.

Amazing experience

I am 40 years-old and this was my second marathon. I had a goal to qualify for Boston, which I did! I improved my PR by 9 minutes. I cannot say enough wonderful things about my experience, but the following are a few highlights: 1) Outstanding Course - I read about the rolling hills in previous postings, but I never noticed them. This course is essentially flat. 2) Pace Group - Incredibly encouraging pace group leaders that knew the course and how to motivate their flock late in the race. 3) Great Finish and Post-Race - Finishing in the ballpark was a blast and the post-race food/drink was great. 4) Crowd Support - Support was strong for a race of this size and the performers stationed along the way were very motivating. I would recommend this race to anyone, no matter your skill level or training. I will definitely be back.

Put Memphis on your MUST-RUN list!

The organization of this race was excellent. The fans were amazing - especially the children from St. Jude who left their hospital beds to line the road and cheer the runners. And the course couldn't be better. I was especially impressed with how they handled a snafu with the shirts. This race is first class from start to finish, and if you are a marathoner, it is an experience you must not miss!

Great Cause, So-So Course

Memphis is an amazing town and running for St. Jude's was really worth it. The course was not great past the half marathon mark. I felt like there really wasn't enough to see in the town, and they had us run past the same landmarks multiple times. The finish in Autozone Park was cool though.

Very, very well done

Being able to take a shower in the stadium prior to driving home was a nice touch. I got to walk by the medical station under the stadium. It looked like a hospital. Glad I didn't need it, but nice to know it was there and well done. There were 26 PowerAde stations on the course. Nice. I might suggest moving the 5K start a few more blocks away; it made things very congested as we were trying to get around prior to the marathon. This was a perfect location for a weekend get-away run. Plenty to eat and see and do.

Great Cause, Great Race.

This is a great race for an even greater cause. The trip through St. Jude was awesome. The crowd support was also great. The roads leave a little to be desired. The slant is the worst of any race course I have ever run. The worst experience was getting robbed for parking. I have been road racing for 29 years and running marathons for 20 years, and this is the first time I have ever paid for parking. I paid to park for the expo, paid to park for the St. Jude Hero's dinner and paid to park for the race. I would not have a problem with this if the money for parking went to St. Jude. Show your visitors hospitality and they will return and bring a friend. Screw them over and they will not be back. Overall the cause, organization, and support makes this a race worth running.

Great Organization and Cause, but Bad Roads

I love supporting St. Jude and this was a well run marathon with lots of volunteers. However, the roads were so bad that I may not run this one again. I know it is not under their control. Maybe if the economy improves, then Memphis will fix their roads.

This was my first half-marathon and just three months ago I thought running 13.1 miles was unimaginable! I finished the marathon with a smile on my face, and I enjoyed taking pictures with my iPhone throughout the course! I loved the crowd support, and I was one who gave a high-five to any offering hands! I'm very proud of everyone who took the time and energy to support this run! Great race - highly recommended

The course is decent but the road was slanted for a lot of it and had lots of cracks. When it's all I can do to hold my pace, it's a lot more difficult. I can't complain though; I set a PR and qualified for Boston. The fan support was great through the half marathon and decent for the rest. Post race chow was excellent. I read some comment from others that indicated if you got there later, it wasn't as good. Glad I made it because the hot soup and warm pizza were right on time.

Caring medical support

I've never had to make use of a race first aid-station until St. Jude's half marathon, and was totally impressed with the attention I received. I run on a weakened left leg, which caused me to trip and fall heavily on my shoulder during the beginning of the 13th mile. As I crossed the finish line, I was immediately escorted to the medical staff for evaluation. Thank you!

Great Beginner Marathon Experience!

I did a lot of research before selecting my first marathon location and race. The St. Jude Memphis Marathon experience far exceeded my hopes and expectations! The course was interesting (and not repetitive), weaving through downtown, by the river, through Beale Street, through a park/zoo, through St. Jude's campus, etc. The rolling hills were mostly short and not steep. The race was orchestrated perfectly! The wave start was smooth. The water/PowerAde stops at every mile were easy to maneuver through (water and PowerAde in different colored cups to facilitate choosing your preference quickly). The GU was at the mile markers as advertised (miles 9, 15, 18, 21), and there were several flavors to choose from. At the end of the race, the marathoners had their own food/beverage section, so there was plenty to eat after completing 26.2 miles! By far the most amazing aspect of this race, however, was the crowd support. The St. Jude/Memphis community really carried us through with signs, cheers, music, and smiles. Thanks, Memphis and St. Jude, for an amazing, exhilarating, and rewarding first-time marathon experience! I will return....

Good race overall and a GREAT cause

Aid stations were well laid out. I would have preferred something besides GU (like fruit) along the way. I agree with another entry - the camber on some of the roads caused me some IT band issues. Another couple of runners in our group finished around 5:30 and most of the food was gone. They were pretty disappointed.

Run This One At Least Once

This was my first St. Jude's Marathon. The experience overall was very good. The expo and packet pickup were organized and informative. Marathon morning was also very organized. The race had a wave start, with new waves starting every two minutes. The course was challenging. There were quite a few long, gradual uphills that slowed you down a bit. The aid stations were at every mile and were fully stocked with water, Gatorade, GU and a lot of enthusiastic volunteers. The spectators were very supportive but were a little thin in some areas. However, when you hit an area with spectators, there were tons. The finish was in Autozone Park, which was cool because you had your name announced as you crossed the finish line in a baseball stadium full of spectators. The food area was a little disappointing. Cold pizza, sweets and drinks, but no plates. You had to hold everything in your sweaty hands, which I didn't like. The overall experience was very good, and I would run this one again - especially when you consider that the proceeds go to help St. Jude's children.

Poor roads, poor course

It is hard to say something bad about a marathon with such a wonderful cause, but it has to be said. The roads were in terrible shape, and the coned off lanes were way too narrow to allow passing, so many runners cut into on-coming traffic. There were too many miles of just nothing. There was very little to no fan support after the half marathon split. The volunteers were very helpful and friendly, and the race was well organized, but the course was just awful.

Must-do marathon!

I am from Memphis, so I have done the half or cheered the past several years. I always wanted to do the full in my home town, so this was the year. The organization was great, and I loved the aid stations at every mile. I am a slower runner (finished in 5:30), but I always had people around me running, so I didn't feel totally isolated (I was prepared just in case). True, the spectators drop off after the half, but there were enough people around to keep me going. Seeing the families or signs about the children from St. Jude was overwhelming at times, and made me realize that I could keep going for them. My only complaint is that I didn't like the marathon tech shirts. They were men-sized, so even the medium is too big for me. I have seen people around town showing off their long-sleeve tees from the half-marathon and 5K, yet I didn't get one like that to wear around. Also, by the time I was done, there was no pizza or soup left. Just donuts and fruit, which was ok, but I really wanted something more sustaining than that.

Thanks for sending us through the hospital grounds

My son was diagnosed with cancer at St. Jude when he was three. He was treated there for a year and has been in remission for three years. We have been involved in the St. Jude Marathon for four years, but this was my first year to run the full marathon. It was an emotional experience for me! I echo all of the positive comments on the site. Specifically, though, it was phenomenal to run through the gates of St. Jude and onto the grounds. So many patients and their families were lined up cheering for us. It was an emotional boost that lasted the rest of the race! The course was challenging, the staggered start was great, the corrals were clearly identified, and the spectators were amazing!

Great race but seemed longer than 26.2

My first marathon, and all I wanted to do is break 4 hours. I ran 3:58:42, so I did that; but my watch said that the course was 26.4, and so did all of my buddies who had the same GPS watch. Now my thoughts are how many people didn't qualify for Boston because of a long course. To me this should have never happened. Also, I signed up in June and they ran out of shirt sizes. They only had large and extra large. Wow. Overall, a great race. My first. Crowd support was great from start to finish. Very good race to run.

A great and meaningful experience

I've run this race six times - five marathons and one half - and it remains as great as ever. It's exceptionally well-organized. The course is solid, neither too hilly nor too flat. And the water/aid stations at every mile are very much appreciated. Best of all is the enthusiastic crowd support. That makes this race. It's deeply satisfying to know and be so often reminded that you are supporting a great cause like St. Jude's, and boy, do people show their appreciation to you! Having downtown Memphis all around you makes for quite a fun weekend besides. Plenty of places to celebrate! One note: the race is getting quite big, and for that reason the organizers are especially concerned about moving people along (through the expo, through the chute, through the stadium). This is understandable, but can also be carried too far. My family and I were enjoying a few moments together in the stands after the race (I ran the full 26 miles) - surrounded by empty seats and away from the aisle - and were told by a race official that we couldn't stay there. We had to leave in order to control "crowd flow." There was no crowd right there. There was absolutely no one around us fighting for that space in the stadium. It left an unfortunate aftertaste in what otherwise was a terrific day at an exceptional and meaningful race. I feel very sorry about the tragic death of a half-marathoner - for her sake of course, but also because the organizers do absolutely everything they can to make the race as safe as possible. They do more in that regard than any other race I've ever participated in. One of the very many things they do so right.

Great for organization and first-timers

I did the half-marathon in Memphis on Dec. 5 and it was fabulous. It was my first half after two full marathons, and I sort of thought we'd be treated like... well, halfers. No. We were treated excellently. Organization was wonderful! Great food, snacks and water/Gatorade at every mile. The course is interesting, there's good fan support, and it would be an excellent race for a first-timer. IF ONLY it had been 5-10 degrees warmer!

Outstanding Event All Around!

This was my 21st marathon (15 different cities). There is something for everyone: 5K, half, and full. There is much to see and do in Memphis - from Beale St., to Graceland, to college and pro basketball. The course was a great mix of urban and residential environments, with just enough challenging, rolling hills. The start was well organized; with a wave start and chip it doesn't matter where you line up. I had yet to experience so many fluid and portable toilet stations. Traffic control was great. The spectators were enthusiastic and vocal. The finish into the baseball park is incredible. Reuniting with friends and family was a breeze. Post-race amenities were outstanding. Every aspect of the event came together despite the very cold conditions. I want to give special thanks to the medical staff who treated me after the race. They recognized that I had issues beyond fatigue and did not let me leave until fully recovered. All around kudos to the St. Jude Memphis Marathon organizers, fund raisers, and, especially, ALL of those volunteers who endured the frigid weather just so we could run around and indulge ourselves!

Wonderful motivational experience

Excellent race and race day temperatures. Great crowd/route support and assistance. Only sad event was the passing of the 30-year-old female half marathoner. I observed the EMT staff transporting this young woman out of the elevator at Autozone Park and was sincerely hoping for a different result. My prayers and sympathies are with her family. The last 100-yard switchback hill at the 26-mile mark was masochistic... but the finish was exciting. You should not make runners climb 50-plus stairs to take elevators down to the locker rooms, though. That is brutal and avoidable.... The volunteer staff in every venue was outstanding. I would hold the 5K separate (different day) from the marathon/half; way to congested downtown with these recreational runners.

I ran this race in 2004 and again this year and I was really impressed at how they've improved every aspect of it. Not that it was bad before. The organization was terrific; the re-route through the hospital campus was a great idea; the pace group leaders were well-prepped and did a phenomenal job (at least the ones I ran with - thanks Scott, Billy, and ______, sorry but I forgot your name!). Must do it as a St. Jude Hero!

I have hopes of being a 50-stater but it will be hard not to do this one every year. Great city, great course, and great enthusiasm from beginning to end. Kid bands were the best of the music, but there was enough music along the way that I didn't think about wanting an iPod. Raising over $1,000 as a St. Jude hero came with great rewards, like the outstanding pasta dinner at the Peabody Hotel, and top-notch amenities and hospitality for the Heroes Lounge pre- and post-race. Worthy cause made it easy to keep going. Don't change a thing, except maybe having to walk up the steps to get out of the stadium after the race!

Great first marathon!

Great race for a great cause. I pushed my disabled son in a special needs jog stroller for the whole race. There were lots of great spectators, and running through the St. Jude campus was awesome! My only complaint is with the course marshals in the first five miles. I started alone in the wheelchair start and got lost between mile two and three because there were no volunteers out to direct runners - and the Memphis Police had no idea of where to go.

first marathon

First off, let me say that they put together a great race. It was very well organized. I do want to voice my concern though. This was the first marathon for me and my husband, and we have been so excited and nervous! I have to say, though, that I almost cried at the expo. I feel that since we pre-registered, that should ensure a proper count of participants, including the correct sizing for their shirts. We registered back in August. You can imagine my complete disappointment when I arrive at the expo to be told they didn't have any small or medium shirts. I could have taken a large or extra large. (I registered for a small.) I know to some people it is just a shirt, but to me there is nothing like running your first marathon and not having a shirt to remember it by. Again, it was a great race, but I am still very sad that I completed my first marathon and have no shirt to remember it by. Maybe next year they could place the shirts with the bibs to ensure that those who registered get their shirts.

5 stars are not enough!!!

A wonderful experience!!! Great organization, easy packet pickup, just-the-right-size expo. Nice long sleeved tech shirt, Nike running cap, and beautiful finisher's medal. Enthusiastic volunteers, and lots of "thanks for running!!" Race day was perfect - cool temps, sunny, with plenty of shade along the course. Lots of entertainment, water/porta-lets at every mile - you can't beat that!! VERY enthusiastic spectators, especially in the first half. One thing to note: the camber of the road between miles 17 and 20 is fairly steep in some places. If you have ITB issues, it could be aggravated here. All runners have their name/hometown announced at the finish line. HOT post-race showers in the Memphis Redbirds baseball stadium locker rooms make this an overall GREAT marathon experience!!!

a great first marathon for a wonderful cause

This was my first marathon, and I ran as a St. Jude Hero. One of the best parts of the marathon was running through the St. Jude campus. There was a huge cheering section with families and patients, and it was an incredibly powerful reminder of why we were running! The expo was fabulous. Packet pick up was organized and quick, and I enjoyed shopping at the booths. The spectators helped keep me motivated. We finished in Autozone Park with our names being called, and Elvis gave me my medal. Great Marathon! Highly Recommended!

The cool temps were perfect (I'm a cold weather-runner), and fan support was great - I can't remember how many times we were thanked for supporting St. Jude's by spectators! The post-race food was great; they had the marathon and half-marathon food separated, so there was plenty left. Fan support was a bit sparse after the half-marathoners broke off and the industrial area was a bit boring; however, there was music periodically and the fans that were there were very supportive. The expo was great and well organized. Downtown Memphis was a breeze to get around in. We parked the car Friday and walked everywhere; we didn't get back in the car until it was time for the trip home. This was my third marathon and we are considering coming back again this year because we had so much fun! I'd highly recommend this race!

Ran the Half - 5 Stars

I ran the half in prep for a full a few weeks later. Packet pick up and expo were well organized. Race start with pace groups were well displayed. It was around 32 degrees at start - perfect for me after we got started. The half-marathon course was fun. Beale Street was very cool - 4 or 5 rows deep with spectators. This was a fun course. It consisted of a nice mixture of hills and flats. Plenty of aid stations. Lot of entertainment on the course. The finish was at the minor league baseball park. Cool medal. Great food at the finish. Best cause of any marathon. Must do.

Good winter marathon except...

I really enjoyed this marathon. It is my third marathon and it is favorite course. I was disappointed in the refreshment area at the end. The marathon and half-marathon run together for the first 12 miles and finish at the same location. There are way more half-marathon runners and most of the goodies were gone by the time that I finished. And I finished in 3:55. I had a few friends who ran the half and raved about the delicious soup that I should try. But there was no soup left by the time I crossed the finish line, and the pizza that remained was cold and gross-looking from sitting out. Also, the fan support fizzles out after the half-marathoners break off.

Cold Weather, Warm Hearts!! Will Run Again!!

This was my first marathon so I waited to comment on it until I ran 4 more in order to be more objective. My first impressions has only been confirmed. This is a great race. Yes, it was COLD and windy. What do you expect in middle America in December? Dress in layers. The first half of the race is amazing! Beautiful! The second half is more industrial but still more interesting than an "out and back" marathon. The best part about this marathon is the fan support. They are out there despite the cold calling you a "Hero." Lots of bands and even an Elvis impersonator or two. Fun. Well-run from start to finish. The "hills" are small and limited to the areas around the Mississippi River. Nothing too difficult, even if you train in flat parts of the country like me. I also like running with the "halfers" for the first half of the race. Kept my pace and spirits high. The finish in redbird stadium is dramatic and well supported. Easy to become emotional!! Keep up the good work, Memphis!!

excellent - will do it again

This was my first 1/2 marathon. The spectator support was phenomenal, and organization was excellent. I did not try to eat downtown, but I have to say the word needs to get out to the restaurants that even if they don't offer spaghetti on there menu they need to make the exception and serve it that one night before the race each year. i just ran the race in Little Rock and i could not believe that each restaurant downtown didn't have spaghetti on their special board.

Great Race!

The Memphis Marathon is a must-do marathon for anyone with the goal of 50 marathons in 50 states. The weather was a bit on the cool side, but better too cold than too hot. The course scenery was interesting and historic. The spectators were wonderful and the post-race refreshments were fantastic.

Great Race!

This race was fantastic! The crowd support was amazing and the race was for a great cause. The course was not too hilly. I am from the Midwest and it was very doable. The only downsides were that the camber of the roads made me a little sore (totally out of organizers control) and the last 10 miles or so were kind of dull. I would definitely recommend this race to anyone. Memphis is an amazing town and the course did a good job of showing off the town.

Make Memphis part of your schedule!

I expected a good event, but got a fantastic event. Probably the best organized marathon I have run. Absolutely the best post-race food. Big variety and lots of it. The warm soup tasted and felt great on a cold day. The weather was perfect. Downtown Memphis was a great place to stay and it was easy to get to the start and away from the finish. I will go back.

What an awesome race!

I decided to run this race as a "long run" of 13 miles in a marathon training plan for my first marathon race in February. I wish this would have been the marathon. The weather was perfect, the crowds amazing, and the finish picture perfect. I loved everything about this race - the city, the course, the organization, the expo, the people, the crowd, the amazing mile participants, and the finish. I wish this would have been my first marathon, instead of a half-marathon training run. It was amazing. This race has so much heart, and the kids give so much inspiration.

Great winter marathon choice

I got a PR/Boston qualifier, so I can't complain too much! The first half of the course was much more scenic than the second, and it was fun to run with the half-marathoners for 12+ miles. Spectators were sparse for the second half of the race, but the ones who were there were enthusiastic. I got a kick out of the signs and costumes - especially the Santas and the guy in the banana suit who I swear I saw 3 or 4 times. I train in a hilly area, so I found the description of the course as "gently rolling hills" to be accurate: it's not what I would call "hilly," but it's not flat. Expo was the most streamlined and best organized I've seen to date, and the wave start was excellent - my training partner and I were able to maintain goal pace even in the first few miles because it was never too crowded. It seemed to us, as another poster mentioned, that the 20 and 21 mile markers were a little off - that 20th mile seemed to go on forever! We almost got hit by a car at one point in the second half - so keep your wits about you like you would on a training run. Extremely well-organized aid stations at every mile a huge plus - never had to wait for a porta potty or lose time fighting for water. Last few miles were pretty bleak and industrial, but not sure I would have found the running any easier if they had been scenic. Stadium was a great place to finish because it was easy to meet up with family and cheer for other finishers while stuffing our faces and drinking beer in the bleachers. Climbing the stairs was a small price to pay for the good food and a place to sit and rest. December weather in Memphis is generally perfect for running. Enjoyed the Saturday race for a change, because my running group could actually enjoy the nightlife that evening. Good hotels within walking distance of start/finish. Thank you to the downtown restaurants for the pre-race dinner discount! Great race and great weekend trip!

Fun race - fantastic organization, fans & course

The weather was a bit cold, but preferable to hot weather. The course was nice - good scenery, gently rolling hills, nothing too steep. Running with half-marathoners was a bit deceptive - thinking I should be running faster and not realizing I was running with half-marathoners until I was all alone at the cut-off point. Thank you to the people who served beer at miles 16 and 22 - that really helped give me an energy boost. The fans were spectacular all along the course - thank you, Memphis!! I enjoyed the post-race refreshments (soup and beer!!). As for Memphis, it is a great city to see. "Must dos" while in Memphis: take a tour of the city, see Graceland, and eat at Rendezvous Ribs.

Totally Awesome Experience!

This was my first marathon, and it was a total blast! I ran as a St. Jude Hero, which made the experience even greater. If you run the St. Jude, Memphis Marathon, you really should consider running as a St. Jude Hero. Join a team or form one of your own. GO, TEAM JAKE! It really adds to the excitement. People are so willing to give to support St. Jude. The Heroes Pasta Party on Friday night was great. It was very inspiring to hear the stories of the children of St. Jude and meet the other "heroes." The race was very well organized and the fan support was FANtastic! Supporters lined the entire 26.2 miles. The course had slight, rolling hills with plenty of flat sections. Packet pickup was well organized and had a lot of vendors selling all sorts of running stuff. A company takes pictures along the route and at the finish (a few more photographers would help) that you can order online. All three races - 5K, 1/2 marathon and the marathon - were all sold out this year. That's 14,000 runners! We had almost 11,000 people at the start of the 1/2 and marathon and even with the staggered start, I spent the first 2 to 3 miles dodging people who didn't start where they were supposed to. But hey, it made me feel fast passing so many people like that. It was really neat to run down Bealle Street and past famous landmarks of Memphis. When the halfer's peeled off at the 13.1-mark, it did thin out quite a bit. The aid stations, entertainment and cheerleaders and regular folks along the route really help keep you going. There were even 2 or 3 places handing out beer and sweets! I love Memphis. The finish in Auto Zone Park was really cool. My family got to see me come into the park and cross the finish line and hear my name announced on the PA system. Way cool. I will absolutely be back next year! Maybe I'll shoot for a Boston qualifying time. :) Then, maybe not. This is a must-do marathon! Thank you, Memphis!

Great First-Time Marathon

My biggest gripe was the carb load before the marathon. You know that it's not going to be one big party, that restaurants in the area are going to be offering discounts on pasta dishes. We couldn't find any pasta!! From the list given, we went to BB King's. They didn't even serve pasta any longer. The places that did have pasta were reservation-only, but we had only just gotten the packet Friday night, so we were out of luck. Finally we gave up and drove out of town to a Ruby Tuesday! No carb load party, and I was kind of looking forward to that part. After the race I was basically a wreck, so we never really got a chance to party on Beale St. WE WILL BE BACK! People in Memphis are awesome! So friendly! Great supporters of the race! The course was super hilly for a Midwesterner. Not giant hills but definitely consistent. No one could argue that it's flat!! After the 1/2 marathoners veered off, it was pretty desolate, I thought. There were some supporters and bands that brought tears to my eyes. With no crowds running with me, I got a lot of personal attention, which I totally needed. By 20 I gave up and started walking. Jesse, wherever you are, I love ya, girlfriend. We made it by running flat parts and walking the hills for the last 6 miles. That night I thought, never again!!! But by morning, I was already thinking strategy for my next marathon. Thank you, Memphis, for being my first!

Very well organized and fun race

I was very pleased with the organization of the race. Packet pickup and the expo were quick and easy, even in downtown Memphis on a Friday afternoon. The discount at area restaurants the night before the race was a nice perk. The staggered start went well, and it was a blast starting near and running down Beale a couple times. Keeping in mind that the overall experience was fantastically positive, a couple things I wasn't a huge fan of (so others are surprised): 1. It was a blast running with the half marathoners for the first 12.5 miles. The fan support was tremendous and there were a good number of other runners, but never was it overly crowded. After the half-marathoners turned off for their finish, however, fan support was limited to the hydration stations every mile. There were a few individuals here and there along the way and the volunteers at the water stops were very supportive, but don't expect many cheering crowds between mile 13 and mile 26. 2. I was excited about the prospect of finishing inside Auto Zone park. The reality, though, let me down. I like to SEE the finish line to give me something to push towards, but here it was obscured by the park itself until the last 150 meters. After running that far, I don't want to have to remind myself how close I am. I want to see it approaching. 3. After finishing on the field, you have to walk up stadium steps to get to the concourse. Cruel... just cruel. But once you get to the concourse in right field, all of the bananas, oranges, hot soup, and cold beer make you feel better.

More hills than Elvi

This was a very well run race, with great support and great people, for a great cause. The staggered start was an excellent idea, as it kept the beginning from becoming the usual traffic jam. Lots of aid stations, but having them right on the mile markers makes it hard to record splits. Very surprised how hilly Memphis is. My hammies were killing me by Mile 19, but that could also be due to over-training. Or the overaggressive pace groups. And as great as it is to end in a stadium, placing a downhill at the finish line is just cruel. (Didn't Elvis say something about that?) I did my best Yosemite Sam right up until the cameras. Food at the end was plentiful, but having ribs for dinner was why I did this race.

first full marathon

I enjoyed this race very much, as this was my first time to do a full 26.2 mile marathon. I loved the finish of running through the Auto Zone Park. The course was awesome, and the water stops and fan support were great. Would have liked to have seen more bands, but I know it's hard to get enough for all the entire course. I would definitely do this one again. My family did the 5K race and also enjoyed their experience as well. All of it was a very, very well organized and great running experience. Great job to all of those who were responsible for putting this together.

Fun, well organized, and raised $2M for sick kids.

This was a fun and very well organized event for a fantastic cause. It was a cold (36F) start but I felt warm after 2 miles and rolled my long sleeves up later in the race. Not totally flat but not very hilly either. Hills are easier than the Nashville. Aid stations at EVERY mile were very cool. Excellent stadium finish too, with your name announced as you enter the stadium! The full/half/5K were all sold out early this year. Can't wait for next year!

Excellent mid-sized marathon

The expo was top-notch. The staggered start by pace kept the flow of the race going and allowed for a smooth start. The course was somewhat flat but with meaningful inclines and hills. The spectators were awesome. The finish in the ballpark was fun (running on warning track was a refreshing break for the legs!), and the post-race festivities were great. I highly recommend this race.

An incredibly well organized race.

Of the four marathons that I have run, this one was, by far, the best organized. As far as I know there was water, PowerAde, and porto-johns at every mile. The online registration, check in, etc. were flawless for me. There seemed to be plenty of personnel and they were all great. Based on comments, I expected the course to be hilly. It did not seem that way to me but I live in the Piedmont region of NC. My guess is that this marathon picks up a lot of Midwestern folks who do their long runs in pretty flat places. I did not find most of the course to be particularly interesting or attractive but the view of the Mississippi River in the early miles was great and it was also a kick to run through Beale Street a couple of times. The wave start is a great idea, especially since the full and half marathoners start together. The pace teams were great (although I could not quite keep up with the 3:30 team as I had hoped). The finish at AutoZone Park was fantastic and it was great having such an abundance of high carb, low nutrition stuff at the end (I have never met a Krispy Kreme donut I didn't like). I tend to not repeat marathons but this could be an exception. If I still lived in Memphis, I might stay marathon ready to do this every year (or at least the half). My only gripe (really minor) is I am convinced that the 20-mile mark was misplaced. I was knocking out eight-minute miles consistently, but my 20th mile came in at 9:00+ and my 21st mile came in at under 7:00. Just a bit of demoralization at a time I did not need it. I would be interested in hearing if others thought the 20-mile point was off. Bottom line: the St. Jude's people have nailed this and are doing it right. I would recommend this for the first-timer or the 50+ marathon veterans. It starts and ends in downtown Memphis, which is a great destination for a weekend. And, to top it off, St. Jude's Children's Hospital is a fantastic cause.

St. Jude rocks

The Memphis Marathon slogan: "Let's Rock!" But the truth is that those kids at St. Jude rock, and running for them gave me the strength to train and run hard. It's a superb course, surprisingly challenging and... well, it was very cold, so if folks say that there weren't a lot of people out, that's why. Runners I spoke to afterward were in the showers trying to warm up! It was fun and the city provides lots to do for a fun-filled weekend for runners and their families at discounted prices. I live in Texas, so I felt great during the whole thing.

Inspiring

This was my first marathon, and I came away inspired - by the number of St. Jude "Hero" runners, by the enthusiasm of the spectators (favorite sign: "You're all Kenyans to me!"; Second favorite: "You are all crazy."), and by the camaraderie among runners along the way. Well done! (And I agree with the comment below regarding the soup - that REALLY hit the spot!)

Great event but...

Positives totally outnumber the criticisms. Positives: -Challenging course -Hospitality was second-to-none -On-course support at mile markers is first-rate -Course was lined with wonderful folks offering support -The flip-flop of finish lines was a good idea, eliminating backup to get the chip timer removed.... The one negative: -The Autozone Park concourse is a logistically terrible pre- and post-race. Pre-race check-in is very difficult because the concourse is too narrow to form a line. AFTER the race it's almost like a cruel joke... you run your 26.2 or 13.1, and THEN you have to take on the long row of stairs to a jam-packed concourse. Half-marathon supporters best not try to see their runner cross the finish line until this is fixed because you will not be able to find a place where you can see. I'll be back, but PLEASE adapt the concourse to be user-friendly.

Great cause, great race

This was a great race. Well-organized, convenient race day parking, and the best spectators I have ever seen. Course was interesting and I got to see parts of Memphis I would have never seen any other way. Only course complaints are that running through the park was a little crowded and the camber of the roads was a little rough; but those are very minor issues. Perfect weather made it even better.

First-timer 1/2 marathon

Great race, great organization, great cause. This being my first race, I was more than impressed with all of the assistance and drink stations. The support from the spectators was unbelievable, and the signs of "thank you" were great. I remember one little boy with a sign that said, "Thanks for helping my brother." It made my tired legs not so tired anymore. I thought running into the stadium made you feel big-time. We will be back in '09. My goal for that race is a full marathon.

a MUST for every marathoner!

Memphis is the poster child marathon for all middle-sized marathons. It's not Chicago or New York, but then again, nothing compares to those. For the 1,000-5,000-participant races, Memphis is A+. the finish is the highlight of the day (you must try and eat the food). And by the way, I am the guy who made a big deal about my Garmin 305 watch being way off in 2007. Interestingly, they redid a couple portions of the race course in 2008, and this year my Garmin showed .6 less distance. Problem fixed. :) Great job to all race organizers and volunteers. You are rock stars in a town that is "all shook up." :)

Good marathon

St. Jude's is a very well run marathon. About the only con I can list is the constant rolling hills. I was running for a PR, and while there are no big hills, there are a lot of small ones. I will not try for a PR on this course in the future. St. Jude's has the most water stops that I have ever seen at a marathon. Water and PowerAde at every mile. WOW. I didn't need it every mile, but it is nice to pick and choose when you want it. Gel was available at least 3 times that I saw, but it's always a good idea to carry your own if you are counting on it. The finish line/area is the best I have seen at any marathon. I like the splitting of the half and full runners to separate finish lines and areas with their own food. It's also nice to finish in the stadium so you can sit in the seats while loading up on beer and pizza. Beer at the finish is always a plus. The volunteers were first rate. Lots of noise and encouragement at the water stops. Good fan support for a race of only 3,000. I don't know if there were bands/music every mile but it sure seemed like it. It helped that the weather was good, despite the bit of headwind at the end, but of course, that is beyond the director's control. The last report I heard before hitting the starting line was 30 degrees. Not sure what it was at the finish, but not much warmer. I would run this one again.

First time will be hard to top...

I think the organization of the event was probably the most impressive part. Running a close second was the support and enthusiasm for this event. Even a friend I brought along, who isn't in the running community, said he felt like running due to the emotional high he felt. There were some sketchy portions of the race, mostly potholes and speed-bumps. The high-incline turn towards the end was NOT appreciated. However, the run downhill and into the stadium more than makes up for it! Great post-race reception and abundant quantities of food/drink. Memphis really turns out for this; it seemed as though half the city was on the streets freezing their tails off to cheer us on. Thanks Memphis/St. Jude for a spectacular first marathon experience!

what a great cause!!!!!

For a first-time half-marathon participant, the course was perfect! Mile 9 was somewhat slow and boring, but the finish made up for it. Volunteer support was great and the Memphis Police Dept. did an EXCELLENT job!!!!! While I had expected more crowd support, the folks near mile 7 that offered snacks were a special treat. Only change I would suggest: names on bibs.

Best Marathon

Memphis is the best marathon. Water stops and split times every mile make the miles fly. The fans are great - parents of St. Judes Children are out in full support thanking runners. This marathon tops Chicago, Marine Corp, and Nashville; it's a must-do.

Well-organized, but a boring course

I want to love this marathon because this is my home town, but I actually do not like the course. The first half is great - nice course, great crowds. But for those of us who have to press on, it is at times desolate with a lot of uneven roads and pretty thin crowds. If it weren't for St. Jude Hospital itself, I probably wouldn't choose to run again.

Ran a PR... so of course I liked it...

This was my second marathon in 2008, and I improved my time by a significant amount. I appreciated all of the fan support downtown and along the outer reaches of the course. I like the size of the race - some have gotten way too big. I loved seeing posters of some of the St. Jude kids along the course and hearing people yell, "Thanks for running for our children." Wow, if that is not a great reason to do your best, I am not sure what else can motivate a person. The last .5-mile of the course was too technical for me - ramps, 180-degree turns, etc. You had to really do some thinking to understand and process all of the directions... not what I want to do at the end of 26 miles. Otherwise I had a great time.

Great race for a first-timer

I ran the half last year, and after running that, I realized that I wanted to do the full. This year they had a limit on the sign-ups, and that was good, as it kept a small field. The start is in waves and everything went fine. Last year it took me only 7 minutes to cross; this year, 11 minutes. The miles flew by. This year they allowed St. Jude Heroes to have their families sign up for alerts when they cross certain areas of the course. The course isn't pancake flat, but the hills are not that hard to tackle. The majority of them are the overpasses to go over I-240. The course support is great because each mile has a time AND water, plus PowerAde. Even hours after the end, the stations still had plenty of each. We ran by St. Jude itself, then down the tree-lined N. Parkway. We turned into Overton Park, which was a nice distraction from the straight-away of N. Parkway. After Mile 12.5, the half-marathoners split off and the course gets more bare. After Mile 14, it's another long, straight stretch heading east. Little crowd support again, but by that time you're not really thinking of anything but putting one foot in front of the other. E. Parkway was busy with traffic, but they did have one lane strictly for runners. I did get nearly run over by a car when a runner decided to play cop and try to let him go through without looking behind him for other runners first. In the last .2 miles, there's a hard climb up a ramp for a downward finish into the stadium and that is the best part. The finish in the stadium!! So much fun! By the time I was done with my marathon (nearly 5 hours later), the pizza was cold, donuts were low on numbers, and the massage area was cut off. So that wasn't fun to find out. Otherwise, though, I would do it again, with maybe a flatter marathon before it to see if I could get a faster time.

Top 10!

I've run big races and little races - everything was exactly as promised and the organization was great! I think they actually had water at more than every mile and I've never been in a race with porta-potties at every mile - even after the half marathon! This allowed for very short lines, if any. Spectators were wonderful and there was more entertainment than I expected. This race exceeded my expectations, and I was properly prepared for 28 degrees even coming from south Florida. Highly recommended and would do it again. Thanks, Race Director!

First half-marathon for a lifelong Memphian

This was an incredible experience. I was proud to be from Memphis as I ran alongside thousands of others. The course was great - it flew by. Just the right number of turns. Good marathon

Good marathon. I enjoyed the course. I wish there were more spectators over the last 2 miles - when I needed it - but it probably would have been embarrassing to have them see my form at that time. They had plenty of water and GU, even though I brought my own. It would be nice if one spectator could go in with a runner to help get food and drink from the runners' food area. Well organized. started on time and ran like clockwork. Thanks, Memphis.

Well-Run Race

My first time ever in Memphis and I really enjoyed this race and the city. The race was well organized. I found the water stops at EVERY SINGLE MILE, on the mile, every time, to be wonderful. And each water stop had water, Gatorade and porta-potties. The fans were great (though mostly only there for the first half) and I've never been thanked so much for running a race. The fundraiser for St. Jude Children's Hospital is a big deal in Memphis. My only advice to runners would be to pay attention to the camber of the road. Three of us who ran it all found the consistent slope to the right to give us some leg pain by the end. Not bad... but if this is an issue for you, pay attention. A very enjoyable event... I'd definitely run it again.

Takes Tops for After-Race Goodies

I thought the Atlanta Thanksgiving Marathon post-race goodies were the best, with a Coke and a Snickers bar, but I think the beer and Krispy Kreme donuts even have Atlanta beat! Fun course, even though it was cold, this year the support from the crowd was good and kept everyone pumped up - even us in the back of the pack. Wonderful town, too!

Great half-marathon. I loved it. A must-do!

The good thing about this one is it's cold at the start but warms up by mile 2. Chip timed. Not really any port-o-potties near the first two corrals. I had to go back by Corral 8-9 to use the bathroom. Other than that, it was great!! Very friendly atmosphere. Nice medal, and nice beer and food after the race! I loved it all!

Nice Marathon - No spectators

The course and the organization for this marathon are all right. While there were weak spots, there is really nothing negative to be said. The course has a lot of rolling hills and long straight sections. There are spots were the road surface is substandard but there is almost nothing the organization can do about that. It is a Saturday race and like the other Saturday races I've done there are the ongoing traffic issues. You race in lanes with cars and trucks going by right next to you. And no matter how many police they have for traffic control, there are the handful of locals who didn't get the word and end up driving through the racers out of their driveways or the smaller side streets. Unique to Memphis, at least in my experience, are the trolley rails that it felt like we crossed a half dozen times. All that said, it was a nice enough mix of neighborhoods, urban parks and downtown. The organization holds the finish line open for 7.5 hours and insist that all the walkers start in the last corral. Apparently, they have had problems in the past with under trained walkers since their website actively discourages walkers from entering the full marathon. This was the first race I've done without a significant presence of Team in Training or any of the other common charity marathon groups. This marathon's main charity, St. Jude's Hospital, is a fine organization worthy of all the support it can be given. There is a very real difference of how they and Team in Training support their racers out on the course. This race had the fewest spectators I've ever seen and it made the absence of the TnT supporters really obvious. I commented to others that the only way they could have had any fewer spectators would be to order an evacuation of the city.

A Great All-Around Race

From the expo to the finish, the St. Jude Memphis Marathon was a great marathon experience. Here are my observations on each category: Course: While this was my first visit to the city, I felt the course was well designed to show us a good cross-section of Memphis. We spent a good amount of time in the downtown area, including a beautiful view of the Mississippi riverfront area as well as some of the great landmarks. We also saw nice residential areas as well as the zoo. I would add that I found the course to be a bit hillier than I expected... nothing too daunting, but they did keep coming. My one observation in terms of improvement would be mile markers. According to my Garmin, mile 20 measured 1.2 and mile 21 clocked in at 0.8. I think the others were pretty right on. But that was a small item in a really nice course. Organization: Great, from the packet pick-up and expo to the finish at Autozone Park. As a big baseball fan, I thought it was awesome to be able to use the AAA Cardinals clubhouse at the park to shower and change after the race. My only suggestion on organization is that they put the clothing drop at the start line rather than the finish. It kind of defeats the purpose of a gear drop to have it 3 or 4 blocks from the start. Having the start at FedEX Forum was a great plus... plenty of heat and bathrooms. Spectators: I felt the city really came out... lots of fans were scattered along the course. The aid stations were great as well, and I greatly enjoyed the music that was plentiful along the route. All those young people dressed up like various pieces of fruit - appearing several times - kept it interesting. And Elvis was in good supply as well. Even got my picture taken with him at the end. All in all, Memphis is a great race for a great cause... running past the hospital at mile 25 was far more emotional than I expected. Good job, Memphis.

Inspiring cause, uninspiring course

The volunteers were great. Where there were supporters, they were fantastic - where else can you hear people yelling, "Thank y'all for runnin!"? I thought the course was pretty dull - the part through downtown is interesting, but then there are long dreary empty stretches after the half-marathoners split off. The soup at the end was the best thing ever!!!

A wonderful race!

What a wonderful race! It was very well organized, from the wave start to the finish in the triple A ball stadium. Many downtown and suburban restaurants participated in the carb loading dinner by providing discounts to runners, which was neat since it gave many convenient options for dinner. The course was great, including runs past many notable attractions (Sun Studios, Beale St, etc.). Most of the race was run with the half marathoners all the way up until mile 12. There were many good aid stations - only had one problem with no PowerAde (only water) at one around mile 14 or 15. The spectators were great - sparse only at times but mostly wonderful and plentiful. The race finished at the ball stadium, where the marathon and other races finished at distinct separate ends of the field, making it easy for spectators to see their runners finish. Also, it was easy to look up from the field after finishing to find your friends and family in the stands. The medal was fine, and the participant shirt was a nice, wicking long-sleeve. No award for finishing except the medal, a Mylar blanket, and the sore muscles to prove it! Rolling hills kept things interesting. This was not only a fun race, but the town of Memphis made for a great race weekend with all the great things to do. I'd run this one again.

Great race

My first time here at Memphis, and this was my fourth marathon overall. This is a smaller race after having done Chicago, NY, and Boston, but the organization is great and with the wave starts congestion was not a problem. I was also impressed that for as small a marathon as it was they provided pace teams all the way through 3:00 and as far as I could see the ones up front kept to the pacing very well. The course has a lot of rolling hills - nothing too terrible, just enough to break stride and give some good down hills to pick up pace. It also takes you past a lot of historic spots in Memphis, so there is plenty to see and it was clearly marked. The reason for the low rating on spectators was that there are going to be periods where this isn't anyone cheering for you. Many of the spectators that do turn out are very enthusiastic and help push you along though. I think that is the biggest drawback from the big-city marathons. But the competition is still pretty good and you should have people to run with and help pull you along even if you are running near the front of the race. The thing I enjoyed most was the post-race stuff. The options was great and this would probably be a benefit of the smaller race since you don't have to feed 20,000 to 40,000 runners. They had Domino's pizza (ham, pepperoni, sausage, and cheese), Krispy Kreme, cookies, bananas, oranges, McAllister soups, soft drinks, Vitamin Water, Dasani water, chocolate milk, OJ, and as much beer as you'd want to drink, so it would really be hard to ask for much more. I didn't take advantage of either but I think they also provided showers and massages for runners as well. One last thing I liked was that the race was Saturday, so you had a chance to go out and experience Beale St. and a little Memphis nightlife - a definite plus for out-of-town runners. Overall, I had a great experience and would certainly come back for this marathon again.

Not bad

The course was a little boring and there was not energy gel at all the stations the information listed - this was pretty disappointing when I was counting on a kick at mile 16 and couldn't get any until mile 21 or so. Also, I had attempted to upgrade to the full from the half 3 weeks before the race, and while I was told that was fine, nothing was processed, leaving us stressed out at the expo (though they did take care of it).

ONE SATISIFIED RUNNER!

This was my first marathon, and it was great! First and foremost were the fans. It was a cold day for Memphis and there were so many people out cheering us on. Lots of people had set up their own "aid stations," with candy and water. The marathon had water, PowerAde and port-o-pots at every mile, and there was GU at 4 different checkpoints at least. Plus the entertainment - bands, belly dancers, even a line of Santas! Getting my packet was easy, and I was lucky enough to be one of the first 1500 to pick it up and receive a free Nike running hat. Tech shirts were awesome and so was the medal. I was so worried about the hills after reading past years' posts on this website, but I didn't think they were bad - they were few and far between. I can't say enough good things about this marathon!

Great Day/Great Race

What a beautiful day for a run. The course is great and the fan support was wonderful. The signs and pictures of the St. Jude kids posted along the course were inspiring. Plenty of water stops and the hills were not as bad as I expected. Running into the stadium and hearing the cheers from the stands was a blast. I do not repeat marathons, so I have to say that my one and only St. Jude Marathon was a very positive experience. I will recommend this one to all of my running friends.

Disappointing

Allow me to preface my comments by stating that I have the utmost respect for the main goal of this marathon, which is to support St. Jude's Hospital. However, the course itself is another matter. The organizers must eliminate the two 180-degree turns. The second turn led to a steep and narrow ramp just before the 26-mile marker! This was followed by four 90-degree turns. In many sections of the race, runners were limited to the shoulder of a road involving two lanes of traffic that resulted in repeated inhalation of exhaust fumes. Many of these sections included a steep camber that could only be escaped by running along the line of cones. On more than one occasion I witnessed runners having to adjust their position due to cars either forcing their way through the route or erroneously being allowed to move forward by the police. The organizers of this event must endeavor to create a course that matches the excellence of its purpose.

Not perfect, but AWESOME!

Memphis was cold this year! It was 35 at start and was in the low 40s when I finished. It was windy too, but I don't think that anyone could have adjusted the thermostat to make the runners happy! I didn't mind the weather, but it may have kept some fans off of the course, as the support was not huge. I only saw one Elvis! There were not a ton of bands or cheerleaders, or other great pick-me-ups along the course. The water stations were great. Water and PowerAde every mile! The split times at every mile were also nice. They gave out GU 3 times, which was nice. When I came through there was plenty of GU to go around! The course itself is hilly and the roads are not the best, with lots of bumpy and uneven surfaces. I am not sure that there is a flat mile on the whole course, but the hills aren't crazy - mostly overpasses and underpasses. For every one or two uphills there were one or two gradual downhills. The finish was great in Autozone Park, with plenty of food: Pizza, beer, soup, hot cocoa, fruit, water, sports drinks, etc. The cops on the course did great to control the traffic, but the course is not really closed. The workers were all very helpful and friendly. Plenty of port-a-potties to go around before and during the race. If you are looking for a Boston qualifier, this was tough, but I don't suggest shying away from this one. I ran San Diego 2 years ao at 3:22. This was my second marathon. I finished Memphis in 3:09:54 and am bound for Beantown! Good luck!

This is an amazing event.

I have run this for the past three years, once the half and twice the whole. It is the most organized, supported, and fun race I have done. I have done 12 full marathons. This is by far the most organized, which means so much to a runner who spends months preparing for a particular race. The start and the finish are so seamless and smooth. The post-race food is the best I've ever had! It beats Boston as far as organization and runner comforts. I recommend this race as a must-do. Fun time!

Very well organized

St. Jude is my favorite marathon, but I might be partial because it was my first. I love the wave start. It is very well organized and prevents overcrowding. The spectators and entertainers along the course are the best I have ever seen. The miles just fly by. It does not even seem like 26 miles.

Very well run marathon

Well done marathon. This was my fifth marathon, I'm a pretty consistant 4:30 to 4:45 runner. Very efficient check in and expo. Nice tech t-shirt. December is the right time of year for a marathon in the South. It can be a little cold, but it probably won't be too hot. This year was cold, high 30's to low 40's range. I liked the wave start. The first two miles were not too congested, considering that there were more than 10,000 runners. Nice course with lots to see. An aid station every mile is great. Very little food on the course. Plenty of PowerAde and GU, though. A few rolling hills but mostly flat. Traffic control was excellent. The Memphis police did a very good job. The finish was great. Running into the big stadium with all of the spectators cheering was fun. Finish line food was great: lots of snacks and hot soup. I would skip the post-race party, unless you're one of the fast ones who get awards. No free food or drinks; just "drink specials" if you show your medal. Memphis is also a great city with lots to do and see. Overall, a great marathon. I would recommend it highly.

First Half-Marathon

What an awesome city; the course was full of supporters, as well as some beautiful scenery. Within the first few miles, the course leads you by the Mississippi River and you can see the pack ahead of you in the view. What an awesome experience for my first. I will be back this year - with my wife, for us both to run.

What a BLAST!

This was my first half-marathon race. I thought the organization was excellent, and there were plenty of people to help answer questions. The aid stations were great. I thought the crowd support was the best part of the race - and the reason I will return. Every time I thought I was tired, I would see a picture reminder of what we were running to raise money for, and it just motivated me to keep on going, even if I was slow. The only complaint I had was that the post-race celebration left a little to be desired (unless I missed something... I was rather lame). But that said, I can't wait to come back next year!

First marathon - a great experience

I thought the atmosphere was great, the organization was great, and the race volunteers were great. I believe the finish line crew for the marathon consisted of mostly experienced marathoners, so they understood the emotions that people were experiencing as they crossed the finish line. They were very supportive. The people with "My-Garmin-is-better-than-the-course-measurement" syndrome need to look up the official course measurement on the USATF website. We are talking about steel tape measures corrected for temperature fluctuations versus a satellite signal coming from space to a computer on your wrist. Garmins are great, but you don't measure courses with them, and there's a reason for that.

Krispy Kreme Donuts and Sugar Cookies

This was my sixth marathon. I typically run them between 4:15 and 4:30 - but I do it to have fun. With that in mind, here are my observations: Good weather: Sunny, 50s and 60s, no wind to speak of. But hey, that's luck. Nice, scenic course with good aid stations and spectator support. One of my favorites was a little girl dressed like a Christmas elf standing in the street in front of her house greeting runners. Adorable! Also, lots of bands, including a young boy band (aged 12?) who were really good. A lot people in passing traffic yelled support too. Rolling hills. And lots of them throughout the course. But since I trained in St. Louis, which has similar terrain, I was OK. The funniest moment came when I turned a corner roughly at about mile 24.5 and came face to face with a huge sloping overpass. Two guys behind me started cursing loudly. I laughed. Then sighed. Also, somewhere between 25 and 26, I passed by the front doors of the downtown hotel where I was staying. Talk about tempting! Finish line: Really cool coming into AutoZone Park and hearing my name announced. (By the way: Race-day was my 42nd birthday. What a great way to celebrate entering a new year of life!) My finish line photos are hilarious. I look constipated because I was pushing to take a few seconds off my time. (So take note: Don't look like you're pushing, even if you are. Or just don't push at all.) By far, the best moment was when I approached the food tables and saw box after box after box of my two favorite foods: donuts and iced sugar cookies. Thought I'd died and gone to heaven. This was definitely a fun marathon. And celebrating that night on Beale Street was fun too!

Fabulous, Fun Marathon!!!

This was my first full marathon. I thought it was a great race. It was very well organized and I enjoyed the course. I have noticed other runners' comments regarding the hills. I personally did not think it was a hilly course. I have run on larger and more challenging hills in the flat state of Kansas. :). The finish in Auto Zone Park was very cool. I thought it was awesome that my boyfriend could sit in the stadium and watch me enter the field and cross the finish line. I also enjoyed around mile three when we ran down Beale Street. It was awesome to see all of the people lined up cheering. The food was great too. Who doesn't love pizza, donuts, and cookies?! The majority of the participants do run the half marathon. All of the spectators were very much appreciated during the second half. I highly recommend running this race. I will be running it again in 2008. Thanks for a great time, Memphis!

Good one to run

This was my first half marathon. I really liked the way it was organized. The people are friendly and was well organized. Wish it had more riverside running, which is a treat to run. The only observation was that they ran out of gel and PowerAde by the time we came near the 10-mile mark, and instead of providing water in cups, they asked us to drink by hand (better to have your own supply). Other than that, it is a fun and wonderful race to run. The ending is awesome when you enter Autozone Park - you will really feel like a WINNER.

Fun,but Challenging

After a four year hiatus, I decided to give Memphis another shot to qualify for Boston. Little did I know that the course had been changed since 2003. A lot tougher this time around with the rolling hills after mile 13; the entertainment helped though! Long story short, I did qualify with a PR over my last 4 marathons. (I ran 3:18.) Awesome!! Also a friend got his PR on the 1/2 marathon course. The support over the last 5K was the best. Thanks. Everyone should run this a least once.

A Fun and Challenging Marathon

I've run 10 marathons to date and I would give this one a big thumbs up. Easily one of my favorites. The course was scenic and could be a bit of a challenge if you don't do some hill training. I always do so I enjoyed the hills. The people are super. Lots of smiles and everyone was very helpful. I especially enjoyed the finish line in the baseball stadium. The half marathon finishers finished down the first base line and the full marathoners finished down the third base line. The King himself (Elvis) was there for your finish line photo. "Thank You, Thank you very much!" The marathon food was superb. Hanging out on Beale Street later that evening was a blast. Beer, barbecue and blues. That was pretty cool. I recommend this one to everyone. I'll be back.

Awesome experience. Thank you, Memphis!

This was only my 3rd marathon but it was by far the best. The expo was a little tricky to find but easy to get through. The race itself was great. Fan support was comparable to the other races I've done. There was a kid around mile 12 or so giving out little candy canes that really gave me a much needed boost. The finish was spectacular. I couldn't believe all the food. I was like a kid in a candy store after running 26.2 miles. I had a 9-hour drive to look forward to, so being able to shower in the stadium was a huge bonus. One thing I can say I was a little disappointed in was the post-race massage. I waited a good 45 minutes for not even 5 minutes of massage time. The goody bag had these little notepads with the marathon logo on them, which is totally cool. I would highly recommend this race to anyone!

Amazing run

I did the half, but am still getting over an injury from Chicago Marathon. I've run over 10 half marathons in as many states, and this was GREAT! If you want a zoo, a garbage course, with very little help from race people, go do Indy 500! The packet pick up was flawless; parking was great; St. Jude's tour - WOW; wave start was interesting; course, smokin'; finish, way fun. The only complaint I have is the food: never got to it because I got frustrated and left. Went to my car, grabbed the money and stopped at a local restaurant.

awesome race, but hilly

This was the best organized marathon I have ever run. (It was my third.) I love the staggered starts. There were plenty of people running it, but it wasn't overcrowded at all. There were well stocked drink stations at every mile. But, don't be fooled; it is one hill after another. The course goes up and down and up and down. It is hilly.

Fantastic experience!

Memphis was the best organized event I've run yet; that it was for such a worthy cause is a bonus. The course was challenging (the self-description of rolling hills fits well), but it's still possible to run a PR. The first half is brilliant, with views of the river and a section through Overton Park, but the second half is just streets without much scenery. Support along the course was terrific - more fans than anywhere else I've been, and they were vocal and encouraging to all of us. Finish in the stadium was fun, but walking upstairs to the food was hard! Memphis also has great sites: Civil Rights Museum is a highlight for me, but Graceland and Stax are very worthwhile too. And hit Central BBQ for ribs - best ever!

GREAT! A MUST!

Very enjoyable. Elvis is alive and well in Memphis! I've done 26 marathons, and this is one of my favorites. What's not to like? After attempting to run in Chicago (absolute nightmare!) and being forced on a bus at mile 18, this was pure delight!! Perfect weather, plenty of fluids, nice shirts, and the food at the end - just amazing!! We had warm soup, cold beer, cookies, pizza, everything you could want.

NOT AS EASY AS YOU MAY IMAGINE

Great city to visit. PROS: * Good expo. * Friendly locals on shared course (no cutting up on junctions). * Water every mile and food. * Very well marshaled. * Totally fantastic post-run nosh bash in the local baseball stadium (never seen so much food; you could have sat and watched runners come in). CONS: * Course a bit tedious. If possible, they should bring more of the Mississippi River into the route. * Also, tough (very up and down). * The camber of the roads was deadly!! * Sharing the course with traffic a lot. * Cups instead of bottles for water. * No pasta party.

Great Organization!

I did not wait in a single line the whole weekend. The photos of patients at St. Jude's along the course were inspiring. From packet pick-up to post-race refreshments, my experience went smoothly. No confusion! It figures that race volunteers in Tennessee would be the best. There weren't a whole lot of fans on the course, but those who were there THANKED the RUNNERS. Usually it's the other way around. I don't believe it's reasonable to expect race organizers to entertain marathoners on the course. Just the same, the musicians were a joy. Great, great finish line. Hot soup and cold beer! Heaven!

Good overall; could be v. good w/ improved details

Overall it was a good experience. Four things would have made it very good: 1. Wider running lanes, and not having to share the road with oncoming traffic. 2. Water stations on both sides of the course, not just one (at least every 2nd or 3rd). 3. More and better parking, enough said (sorry to hear that you got a boot on you car, run a race, have fun only to fight the parking cops). 4. Day of race packet pickup for those who drove in on race day (I had to make two trips!).

My first time running Memphis. More hills than I expected - none too steep but plenty of gradual grades, especially, it seemed, between miles 13-20. Uggghhh!!!! I thought the run was very well organized and appreciated the aid stations every mile. Would like to run again sometime.

Memphis rocks - and souls

I ran the half-marathon for a change of pace. The course was not flat, but I certainly wouldn't call it challenging or hilly. Expo was well organized. Shirts are nice. Wave starts were appreciated; the start would have been overcrowded without the wave start. Course was good; water stations were good; splits were provided every mile, which was very nice. Crowd was supportive. Weather was perfect. And to top it off, Memphis and Beall Street are a blast. Be sure to visit the Rock and Soul Museum.

Fast, Well-Organized Marathon

Memphis was my 5th marathon and best overall. There was a perfect combination of easy pre-race logistics, fast course, super-supplied aid stations every mile, enthusiastic (but not plentiful) spectators, and good post-race set-up. A great marathon for anyone looking to check out an amazing city (birthplace of Rock and Roll/Beale street/Elvis) and a fast, no-hassle marathon.

Good cause; not a good race

This was my second half-marathon. I ran my first in Nashville and I have to say it was better. Memphis was a little bit of a letdown for me. At mile 8 and 9, they were out of cups. I even saw one of the volunteers trying to gather cups that didn't look too used off of the ground! YUCK! I didn't like how the roads were not blocked off. I mean, come on, it's just one day. There were not many spectators, and I guess I just expected too much. In Nashville you don't get to run into a stadium, but for the last 1/2 mile you are surrounded on both sides with many spectators cheering you on. The food was excellent!!! However, I'm there for the race and not the food. I will do this race again because of the great cause.

good but it can improve

What really bothered me about this race was the aid stations on the outer side of curves. One should not have to choose between hydration and following the shortest route. I have to agree with previous comments that the course is not as flat as one gets to believe from the website. Yet it wasn't all that bad. Other than that, it is a beautiful course and the people of Memphis are very nice.

Way to go, St. Jude

This is a top-notch event for one of the best causes that I know of. I was proud to run as a St. Jude Hero. The course was as described, the water stops were very well done, the volunteers were amazing and the spectator participation was much improved since we were here in 2002. The only problem I encountered was at the finish. I was forced to run the half because of an injury, and when I came through the finish there was a huge bottleneck; I was pressed on every side. We had to shuffle along for about 10 minutes before we finally got to the stadium steps. I climbed the steps to get something to eat only to find the food venue was as crowded as the finishing line. It took quite a while for it to clear out. The director might want to re-think the finish line.... Overall a great experience!!

Not As Advertised

This was my 7th marathon and I was disappointed with Memphis. The water stations were on one side of the course forcing a mad dash. I didn't get water for the first 5 miles because of the number of people jamming up the course. Not great organization. Very hilly, but the first few miles did have a beautiful view of the Mississippi.

Route was fantastic, but poor organization

Pros: Loved the route (although more hills than I was expecting); weather was perfect; fans were everywhere and very supportive; and volunteers were very friendly. My favorite part was crossing the finish line in AutoZone Park with all the fans in the stands ~ it was awesome. However... once you crossed that finish line, you were on your own to fight your way through major crowds for a long way to get water (with no clear direction of where to find it). It took forever. Just getting out of that area and back to the front of the park was just as hard. It was very frustrating. Before the race, there was a major parking shortage and no help from police trying to figure out where to go. On the course, cars were a little too close for comfort at times. My watch had the half distance closer to 13.5. And what was up with the delay in posting the times?

Best-Kept Secret in Top-Tier Marathons

Reviewing other comments, I'd say 95% of them get it just right. Perfect weather! It was 43 (F) at the start. Sunny all day. 60 at noon (my finish). Sure did create a tide of discarded gloves, caps and sweatshirts along the route (esp. during the first half). Having a Saturday race is TRULY a God-send. The director was cruising the course and cheering - where else are you gonna find that!? BATMG (ButAccordingToMyGarmin) people are embarrassing themselves. Folks, the USATF and RRCA certification tells you everything you need to know about your gadget's accuracy/validity. All the music/zaniness was great. The crowds/fans were better than anyone should expect for an event this scale. (I saw at least a dozen unaffiliated cheerers reposition themselves at 3 or 4 different spots on the route - they were running HARD to support us.) For the record, Memphis is not in the foothills - it is in the Mississippi River delta and you have seen ALL the hills within 20 miles if you run this 26.2. Most elevation was due to highway interchanges and the river bluff. The mile-marker to mile-marker elevation depicted on the website doesn't convey the frequency of the ups and downs on the route, but literally shows the elevation ONLY at each mile post. Park south of Beale and stay closer to the airport and you'll get in and out fast. There was unlimited supply of aid, still, for us 4-hour pacers. Memphis Runners Track Club pacers are heroes second only to St. Jude and the kids. Big, digital timers at each mile and flawless traffic control (at my pace) cannot be improved on!! Rookie marathoners will be so spoiled with this level of organization and support - it almost pains me to boast on the event. It is a 5-star race in a genre where sheer size (30-50 thousand participants) is the most notable feature of too many other races.

Water at every mile... GREAT!

Great race - well organized. The water, Gatorade, port-a-potties and clocks at every mile were fantastic - from now on I will be looking for races that offer the same. Course went through not-so-nice parts of town, but offered a lot of interesting sights. Gentle rolling hills were just what I needed to break the monotony. Fans and volunteers were cheerful and, supportive. Staggered start worked out well. The expo was a bit disappointing (not a lot to do/see/buy), but getting the packet was a breeze. Goody bag and t-shirt were OK, but nothing special. Medal looks good and heavy, and post-race food was yummy. A few people commented on their GPS showing more than 26.2. Same here, and it started at mile 1, where my Garmin showed 1.15. I realize that the average runner will always run a bit more than the official distance simply by moving from side to side to pass people, or get water, or by not staying on the inside in a curve, but 0.15 in one mile??? Miles 2 to about 15 were pretty accurate, but some of the last miles were also off. In the end, my Garmin showed 26.49. Something for the organizers to review. Overall, it was a great race, and I highly recommend it.

Loved it!

Five things I loved: 1) Fun finish inside AutoZone Park. 2) Little girl dressed from head to toe like a Christmas elf cheering runners somewhere around mile 16. 3) Aid stations every mile. 2) Started in waves based on performance time, which prompted runners and walkers to line up where they should. 3) Dozens and dozens of glazed donuts and sugar cookies at the finish line. It was like a dream. My eyes nearly bugged out of my head when I saw them. The one thing I didn't like: Rolling hills from mile 1 through mile 25. They weren't big, but they were relentless.

Best one that I've done so far

Time was a PR by 4 minutes in the half-marathon. Nice course that included sections downtown, along the Mississippi River, residential area and even a section through the woods. Not terribly difficult but some rolling hills around mile 10-12. GPS showed 13.22 miles, so the course may have been slightly long. Lots of cheers and high-fives from fans. A little crowded (got boxed in a couple times) but the wave start was a good idea.

This is a fun race for a very worthy cause.

Love the race, and the supporters. It is the best organized event I have done and it sure beats a few of the ING fiascoes I've gone to. I will do it every year until my knees wear out. But, what's up with the pictures? The Peachtree Road Race (with 55,000 runners) starts posting pictures the same evening. We're four days out and still nothing.

Awesome Experience

I was a Chicago survivor, running as a St. Jude Hero, who was forced to walk after 20 miles of running. Memphis was my chance to finish on my own terms. For me, the course was challenging, the crowd was wonderful and the weather was very cooperative - minus the wind at times. I ran a personal best, this being my third marathon in 14 months. I'd definitely return again and I was very impressed by the volunteers on the course and the direction they gave to the runners. Kudos also to the Memphis Police for their efforts with the traffic. Overall, I had a wonderful experience in Memphis and thoroughly enjoyed the finish in AutoZone Park and the food that was offered to the runners. Thanks to the organizers for a great race and I'd definitely recommend running as a St. Jude hero!

Loved it!! Loved it!! Loved it!!

The entire St. Jude weekend experience was incredible - especially for those that signed up as heroes and got to visit the hospital and attend the pasta dinner. The race itself was great other than the cambered roads, but I managed to fight through IT band issues late. I will definitely be back next year... and the next... and the next. I am now trying to form a team for next year. Thanks to Juice Plus and the Memphis Runners Club for a wonderful race and thanks to St. Jude for the inspiration needed to complete my first marathon.

Great First-Marathon Experience

This was my first marathon and I was originally very nervous about everything. I read about marathons with poor organization and uneven streets, but encountered none of it in Memphis. Some of the best parts of the race: - The scenery in the first half of the race (the pyramid, St. Jude's, Beale St.). - The expo - easy to navigate. - Aid stations - plentiful (every mile!), with friendly volunteers and a clock to calculate your splits - Pace teams! - AutoZone Park - a very cool way to finish. Everyone can see you and they announce your name! - All of the volunteers - everyone went out of their way to help and encourage us. - The spectators - very plentiful and encouraging, especially in the first half of the race A few negative comments about the race: - The second half of the course is not very exciting and there are a lot of cars that pass you. - There are pace teams finishing every 15 minutes after 4 hours, so if you are between 4:15 and 4:30, you're on your own. My overall experience was excellent in Memphis! Everything was better than I expected, from the weather to the scenery. I will definitely run this race again!

I'd do it again!

Wanting to get second chance to set a PR after a disappointing experience in Chicago, I heard about Memphis and its supposedly fast course. I signed up, and eagerly awaited the event. I found the course to be very challenging (lots of hills), but water/PowerAde was available at every mile. I had my fastest time ever through 20, but my legs locked up because I didn't replenish my electrolytes well enough. I learned a good lesson for when I try it again here next year. I recommend this if you've trained for a hilly course.

My first marathon - I just loved it!!!

I just loved this marathon!! It was wonderfully organized and everybody - volunteers and spectators alike - was enthusiastic and supportive. It was sunny and 60 degrees by the end, so water stops every mile helped a lot. The course was rolling, which got a little painful at the very end, but the final 1/2 lap of the AutoZone Park was a blast. And the food was good. What's not to love??

Fantastic event

St. Jude really puts on a quality event. This is one of the best marathons that I run. The people in the run and the volunteers are fantastic. The course could be a little smoother, but it is hard to change the city streets. It might be better to start the runs a little earlier, as the cars were not very nice to us. But we were disrupting their Saturday morning and the police just couldn't control some of the cars. A couple actually pulled out and pushed me back. Not nice when we were contributing so much to the economy on that weekend. All in all, a great event. I have run it for 20 years and will be back next year.

Nice Race

There was plenty of water throughout the whole course, and it was nice to have splits every mile. The hills were not difficult, but you should expect something - I mean, you are entering the foothills. I never had to stop once for cars. There were quite a few fans for such a small marathon (I ran Chicago and there were fans for all 26.2 miles), but I couldn't have expected more.

Good "mid-major" marathon

This was my first Memphis Marathon, and 11th marathon overall. I found the course to be very challenging as it seemed we were constantly either running uphill or downhill. The aid stations as well as post-run replenishments were some of the best I have seen. I too thought the hairpin turn at mile 24 was a bit odd, as I am sure they could have found another way to get the distance. Finishing in the stadium was cool, though running on the outfield track was weird as the gravel was soft and loose so you could feel your feet sliding. My two negatives are small crowds and running on some of the streets where the road was seriously crowned. I caught myself running just outside the cones in an effort to find a surface that was not crowned. Overall, though, this was an excellent experience and one that I will consider doing again in the future.

Good Marathon - Bad Memphis Experience

Really enjoyed the marathon and helping out a good cause. Only complaint was parking before the race. Several of us found a parking lot with nothing indicating any parking restrictions. After the race, my car had a boot placed on it and I dealt with the rudest person I have ever dealt with in my life. Long story short, $75 later, I left. Quite the scam for out-of-towners. All cars in the lot had boots and there were no signs indicating any problems with parking there. Also noticed as I was leaving that other parking lots increased their prices for the race. Never have seen this happen in other cities during marathons. Other parking venues the day before were also incredibly rude. I realize organizers can't control everyone in Memphis, but maybe they could select a few choice places for runners to park. Again, nice marathon, but I won't go back to Memphis!

Great half-marathon!

Course was awesome; there was a good mix of hills and flat land, and I loved the view of the Mississippi, Beale, park, neighborhoods and AutoZone. Weather was a bonus gift. Recommend opening more entrances at stadium. Appreciated the "express" line to food, but should have placed to the left and kept crowds to the right so that runners did not have to intersect with the crowd. Frustrating for runners and spectators. Otherwise, well organized. Thank you for letting someone other than the runner pick up packets. Liked the wave start. Also would have liked music to continue playing from the official race start until all corrals emptied through the start line.

Great Race!

I signed up for the Memphis Marathon after my disappointing time at this year's Chicago Marathon. I think this race was very well organized (water, Gatorade, and porta-potties at every mile - WONDERFUL!) and the course was fun. There were some hills but nothing that you couldn't handle. I liked how the finish was in the baseball stadium with plenty of seats to rest after running. I also liked the fact that it was a Saturday race, so you could go out and enjoy Beale Street and then drive home on Sunday. My only advice to the race director is to keep the Friday expo open until 10 p.m. for people driving in after work. We had to rush to make it to the expo by 8 p.m.

Love this race!

This is my 4th year running the 1/2 marathon in Memphis and I can't believe how much it has grown! Every time I think about trying another race, I feel like it would be such an emotional letdown. The cause is so fabulous that after the first year I signed on to be a Hero and will continue to do so as long as I can run! Great support on the course! The finish area was pretty crowded this year and I'm sure the race organizers will be looking into this as this event continues to grow. My only disappointment was the Heroes Lounge, which this year had to be moved to the Doubletree Hotel. We were offered less food and amenities than the rest of the field had available at AutoZone Park. Look into another venue for the Heroes Lounge! Fabulous weather, which we enjoyed immensely, since it was snowing sideways in Chicago that day!

Great event

This was my first St. Jude Marathon. The people in Memphis did a great job: volunteers were happy and helpful and crowd support was good, at least for the first half. The police could have done a little better job with traffic. Seemed a few cops weren't paying that much attention to the runners. The course is NOT flat, but not extremely hilly. I liked the rolling hills, but they start to wear on you late in the race. The off-camber roads were a bit tricky; you really needed to hug the cones on the center line. The finish was cool, and the food was great! A PR (2:53:51) for me.

GPS showed 26.5 miles. Otherwise, great!

My irst time in Memphis and I really enjoyed the town and the race. It was exactly what I expected, except for 1 thing: I am very convinced that the course was too long. My Garmin 305 was off very early in the race (I don't know which miles were long, but some were long and some were right on). I talked with 3 other people who had Garmin GPS and they also said their watches were showing the course too long. Not a big deal, but with the age of technology, you can't be wrong about your course length. :)

I came from Montreal to do the half-marathon. The course was more difficult than expected with more hills than I thought. I enjoyed every part of this race. Great Race

I ran the half-marathon. It was my first one and I enjoyed it so much. The spectators were great. There were plenty of water/PowerAde stations and porta-potties along the way. Hills weren't too bad, either. My only complaint is that the finish line was extremely crowded and there was only one small flight of stairs to get to the free food and beverages. This may be how it is at most races; I'm not sure. I can't wait to do it again next year.

Perfect marathon

This was my 2nd Memphis Marathon. I missed last year only because my father had surgery the day of the race. It's the little things that make this a great marathon - splits every mile, pacers, well stocked aid stations with enthusiastic volunteers, great weather, no lines at porta-potties, gels at miles 9, 16, 20 (or there about), fair course, and a finish in the stadium that makes you feel like an Olympic athlete. Even if you don't run your best race here, it is hard to beat the support.

I was disappointed in the marathon.

The weather could not have been better for the marathon. I was very excited about running this marathon because I wanted to support a great cause. To my surprise there were not a lot of spectators out supporting the marathoners. The road conditions were awful and traffic was allowed to proceed on the same road as us. I even watched a runner almost get hit by a car at mile 23 because a police officer was not paying attention and let the car go. From mile 13 to 26 was a constant rolling hill. We had to run against traffic for the greater part of the second half. And when you finished in AutoZone Park, you had to climb stairs to the food and beverages. Unfortunately I will not be back in Memphis. I will still support St. Jude's - just not the marathon. One more thing. At mile 24 we had to do this ridiculous u-turn thing. I hope the course is better next year.

Great race for a great cause

This is only my second 1/2 marathon - the first in Chicago this past September. This race was very organized. I loved the water stations every mile, although I didn't need that many since the weather was perfect. I love Chicago but Memphis seemed to welcome the runners a bit more. Great to have a race on Saturday and still be able to enjoy the city instead of rushing back home. I thought the hills were a bit worse than I expected, but even still, I dropped 14 minutes from my time. The pacesetters were really friendly and took time to get to know those running with them. Spectators were great and the entertainment was entertaining! I've already booked my room for next year and plan to be a St. Jude hero next year. Lots of choices at the post-race food tent. Liked finishing in the stadium and the opportunity to sit comfortably to watch the marathon finishers - VERY inspiring! Only drawback was the backlog at the finish. Came to a dead stop due to the congestion at the top of the stairs. Caused everyone to tighten up a bit but this was the only issue I saw all weekend. Highly recommend this one!

Hilly, with moderate spectator support

This was my second marathon, and I am glad I trained for the "rolling hills." The entire race was a rolling hill. I'm from Florida, and I'm thankful to have trained in Clermont, which allowed me to PR. A lot of streets were on an angle, which added to the difficulty of the course. The weather was perfect. Crowd support for the last half of the full was pretty small. There needs to be more bands and spirit groups like Nashville. I heard from a 5-hour finisher that the water stations had run out of cups. Great support from the director. I saw her a few times out there thanking everyone for their support while making sure the cars on the course didn't hit anyone. It was nice to run a race for a great cause.

What a Great Experience!

This was my first attempt at a half-marathon and all I can say is WOW! The cheering spectators and entertainment along the way was awesome! I am glad that my MP3 player was banned because I would have missed out on a lot of motivation. The cheering from families whose lives have been touched by a child with cancer was very inspiring, as was the little girl I saw outside of Target House. Memphis is a must-do in my mind. This is a very well organized event and a very fair, honest course. Enough rolling hills to make it a challenge without overwhelming even a flatlander from NW Ohio. The finish in the ballpark was awesome and the mile or so along the Mississippi was way cool. A great experience

A very friendly, well done race. The support along the route was wonderful. This was the first marathon I have ever run where the race director drove by and encouraged the runners. The only problem were the cones set out in the first half of the race in the middle of the road. They were hard to see ahead of time because of the crowd. People were dodging them all along. I missed one and went right over the top. I realize that they were there because for the second half of the race they wanted to be able to open one lane of traffic but they were a hazard. I thought it was overall a great race and city to visit. After-race food was great. The hotel accommodations were nice also.

Great half-marathon for my first time

This was my first half marathon, and I could not ask for a better experience - from the Friday night check-in to Saturday morning. I could not ask for a smoother experience. The course was perfect, with just the right number of rolling hills. Fan support was better than I expected and really appreciated. Having all the families along the course thanking you for running for their children was a humbling experience, I only wish I could do more. The finish in AutoZone was fantastic, and the food and festivities were more grand than I anticipated. Thank you to St. Jude and all the sponsors for making this a great first event. Great Job Memphis

I have run in all the St. Jude races the past 6 years, and will keep coming back. The food area seemed more crowded than usual, but this was more an indication of friends and family not knowing where to wait than any fault of the runners. As this race keeps growing, other arrangements might need to be made for crowd control in AutoZone park. The weather was great this year, and the course changed a little from past years so that runners actually run past the entrance to St. Jude - nice change!! Pictures of patients and families still gets me every time; my wife starts crying during these stages and we have to get it together to keep running. My biggest compliment is the t-shirt design; best one yet - stick with these colors and fun designs in the future. Great job; will definitely be back.

Fabulous marathon - great finish-line experience

This was my 27th marathon. I can state very affirmatively that the marathon experience doesn't get much better than this. I set a PR, the weather was perfect, the course is scenic and diverse, offering numerous attractions (e.g., Sun Studios, Beale Street, the Mississippi River, etc.) along the way, the medal is a winner, transportation and lodging are easy, organization was flawless, and I could go on. The course, surprisingly, is very conducive to running a PR. I wasn't sure that would be the case, since the race dips down to Riverfront Drive, and then heads inland. But, the gentle rolls in the course offered diversity. Most of the inclines were pitched, but short, setting up nice, long declines - much better than a purely flat course, in my opinion. There were a disconcerting number of turns early on, but otherwise the course was run on long, straight lines. And, as I mentioned in my subject line, the finish line is great. Runners run into the minor league baseball stadium onto the warning track in center field (and the stands were packed when I ran it - it was incredible), circle around the outfield to the third base line (for the marathon finish), and run to the finish. I was sobbing by the time I was done. One other fabulous detail: Half-marathon food and drink was separated from the full-marathon food and drink. I can't tell you how many times I've run a marathon that combines with a half only to find out the half-marathon finishers have wolfed down all the food and Gatorade. This was a great event.

Terrific, inspiring marathon

Well organized, great crowd support, challenging course (rolling hills), and terrific entertainment. The weather was perfect this year. I enjoyed the city sights and the finish at AutoZone Park. It was truly an inspiration to run in support of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, a most worthy cause. The expo and goodie bags left something to be desired. Worth the trip from San Diego and I'll probably run this race again. Organizers should prepare for this race to continue to grow and plan accordingly.

First-Class Job

Everything was very well done - from registration, to packet pickup, to the race itself, to the finish. They had by far the best food/beverages that I have seen at a marathon/half marathon. Nicely done, St. Jude. You should be proud of yourselves.

GPS showed 26.48 miles? Anyone else notice this??

Anyone else run this with their GPS? I ran with my Garmin 205, which has always been extremely accurate. From the first mile it was over and by the end it showed that the distance as 26.48 miles. I realize that these things aren't 100% accurate, but It's always been extremely accurate - within 20 or 30 yards - on all of my long runs. I would like to know if anyone else experienced this? Aside from this, it was an excellent marathon. I loved it.

A top-notch experience

After coming to Memphis for the first time in 2006, I came back for another race. This year proved to be an even better experience than last year. Starting with the packet pick up and expo, everything was organized superbly. Arriving in the morning to AutoZone Park allowed me some time to relax and enjoy a warm place to stretch and relax. The great organization continued to the start with the wave start, as corrals were released in 1-minute intervals. I had no problem getting started and didn't have to fight the crowds like some other races I have been in. The course was pretty good overall and police and traffic control were superb. The finish in the ballpark caps a great race. The post-race food and celebration added another feather in the cap of this marathon. I have run over 40 marathons in many different venues and this race has to rank right up there with the best. I do have one problem with this race; it's a shame it is only run once a year. Treat yourself to a great experience - come to Memphis and you will see just how good a race can be. Memphis, I'll see you in 2008!

A GOOD WINTER MARATHON

Had a great time. The course is not tough but seems to be gradually uphill for most of the half marathon. And the portion through the park is pretty rough. Also, ran out of cups for water and energy drink around 9 miles and hot food for half-marathoners at the finish. Except for this, the organization was excellent. Also have to run alongside traffic in many sections of marathon. Very impressed by spectators thanking the runners for running to support St. Jude's. Must have been thanked over a dozen times during the race. Not sure the distance for the 1/2 is correct. The distance between miles 2 and 3 was 1.25 miles and course was 13.3 according to my Garmin. Still a good marathon - I plan to run again. Had a great time in Memphis.

Excellent marathon! Highly recommend this one.

This is my first half in Memphis. High points on everything!!! The route was beautiful, and spectators were on every mile. Porta-potty and water every mile. No having to wait in line for this. Volunteers were very friendly and super. Every police officer that we passed was friendly and threw us some loud cheers. The only thing that was not pleasant was the Wynham Hotel. Would not recommend this hotel!

Great

I ran the half-marathon and I thought it was great. The course was great and provided interesting sights to see along the way. I found a new pair of running shoes for a great deal at the packet pick-up/expo. The weather was perfect - not too cold or warm - and the finish at Autozone Park was fun!

Good course, very poor organization

The course was hilly and challenging, but the organization was very poor. I ran the half marathon at a slower pace for my wife's sake (~11:00 min/mile) and by mile 8 they were out of cups for water. By mile 10, they were out of water. When you finish, there was limited water and no food until you forced your way through the crowd out of the field area at AutoZone park. It was more than 10 minutes from finish until we got to the refreshment area because we had to fight crowds. Once we got there, they had soup, hot chocolate and other odd amenities. There was no Gatorade and little fruit/other carbs offered. The lack of access to refreshment during and after the race was unacceptable.

Running for a cause!

It sure was nice to run for an important cause. You could easily run a race sponsored by a bank or an insurance company but running for the children made it very special. The rolling hills were not too bad and the local fan support was personal and genuine. Everybody is so friendly! A must-do for marathoners.

Great Course - Questionable Info!

I enjoyed the course and the overall experience. The fans cheering you on were great and this year the weather really enhanced the experience. It was a perfect day from that standpoint. But here we are at 9 a.m. the day after and there are NO results posted online. That is a joke. As a Memphian, while proud, I am not surprised by the amateur-ness of that.

WOW - quite a memorable experience!!!!

While this was my first marathon and I have none other to compare with, I still feel very confident in saying that St. Jude's Marathon was fantastic! It was a great first experience to "marathoning." The support from the spectators truly brought a sense of enrichment and purpose to my run! I was moved to tears by the families that were honoring their children who have passed or currently are battling cancer. The organization of the course, expo, and finish were top notch. Thank you for a great time. I'll never forget it.

An Incredible Experience

I ran the 1/2 marathon and let me say... this was an AMAZING experience. The course was wonderful. There was a live band at every mile. I give the entertainment 5 stars. The crowd was VERY supportive. The scenery was always changing; we ran Beale Street, along the river bank, past the Memphis Zoo, the Pyramid, a lovely upper class shady neighborhood, along the path of a wooded park, across the highway overpass (with many honks of support) and much more. It was AWESOME! I wouldn't change a thing. Everyone is so friendly in this city. I've never met a more welcoming place. Every restaurant server, bartender, volunteer, local citizen, hotel employee, race spectator, stranger on the street, etc... EVERYONE is so polite and friendly. I've never felt so much comfort in a new city... and now I understand "Southern Hospitality." Congratulations, Memphis, and THANK YOU. I'll NEVER forget this for as long as I live.

A great winter marathon

This was my first Memphis Marathon and I was very happy with my experience. The course was nice, especially the finish in Auto Zone Park. The course was well marked and didn't contain any hills of consequence. The organizers covered every detail and I had no problems from the time I got into Memphis until the time I left. I looked at other marathons but decided on Memphis very late in the fall. I am glad I did and have already made plans to return in 2007!

great event

As a first-time runner, I was really surprised at the quality of everything. The crowds were great, food was great, and the finish in AutoZone Park was excellent. I thought the course was well planned, with just the right amount of elevation. I look forward to next year. Even though I have been fortunate to not have a family member who has needed to utilize St. Jude's, it nice knowing this marathon helps supports a class organization.

This was the best race

All I can say is that 13 of us went down from Louisville - 8 ran the half and 5 ran the full - and EVERY ONE of us had a terrific experience. We had a few PR's and a good time all the way around. The weather was a bit nippy, but the sun was shining and it was a lot of fun. The pictures of the children of St. Judes were very motivating and made the experience a heartwarming one. The course had rolling hills, but nothing that was awful. The wave start was the best organized wave start I had ever experienced. The expo was a bit lacking and the marathon souvenirs were only limited to t-shirts. I prefer a pin or badge from each marathon. I also like to have a finisher's photo with my medal and the race name behind, but no one seemed to know where the finisher's photos were being taken. (I asked several race workers.) The food at the end was terrific also. Who knew how good a warm cup of soup would taste at the end of a race? Kudos to you for a well organized and fun race. If you ask any of the 13 of us about this race, we all talk about the road trip we are going to take next year. (I ran the half.)

Great race again!

Colder than last year, but the whole experience is great. Finishing in Auto Zone Park where my friends and family can see me is just awesome. The food at the finish is great, though I do wish my pit crew could have gone in with me, for I couldn't have succeeded in this race without them. Memphis spectators are the best. The women on North Parkway that were cheering your husbands on, thank you for your kind words to all of us runners. That was so cool. Will be back next year. Running this in Memphis just does it for me!

Great race for a great cause

I enjoyed the small rolling hills. I really enjoyed being a St. Jude Hero. Running for a reason was especially rewarding, along with all of the perks we got, such as our own lounge, pasta party and two more free shirts. The singlet is nice. The support was also fantastic. The sideline is filled with appreciative friends and family of St. Jude patients.

Worth doing

The race was well organized. Packet pick up was easy and the expo had cool stuff to sell at good prices. Cheering from spectators along the course really keeps you moving. The pacers were excellent. It seemed like the whole town of Memphis really supported the event. I agree that too much of the course had a lean to it, my IT band was killing me and it usually doesn't. The city of Memphis is worth the visit. It is full of friendly helpful people. If you want to learn about the blues, see Smokey at the Memphis music store! I recommend this race. You contribute to a good cause, see cool sites, and have the oppotunity to eat REAL BBQ.

More consideration by the people of Memphis

Overall the Memphis Marathon is great. My only huge concern is when as many as 20 participants had to wait at least 10 seconds for a traffic light. The police allowed all cars to pass this five-lane road and we were left to wait. The burnt orange and yellow t-shirts were just gross.

An event not geared towards walkers!

Overall, I was very disappointed in the St. Jude Marathon. I am a newer runner who has only run the Little Rock Marathon. I felt as though the course was cambered and the exhaust from the very close cars was not appealing. The spectators were few and far between for those who are much slower. The flyers they had showing what musical event was to be at each mile looked good, but I never saw it. The farther I got, the less I saw. At mile 17 I almost dropped out. When I finally got to the 20-mile marker, I was shocked to see a car drive up Parkway in the lane the leftover runner/walkers were in. The second half of the marathon was almost a ghost town. (You would think with a city of over a million people, there would be more supporters.) The MPD was sarcastic and rarely spoke to those participating. I was disappointed the finisher t-shirts were "FOR SALE," and more disappointed when I finally finished the marathon only to get my medal from a rude man smoking a cigarette while putting it on me, and who never once said, "Great job." The only positive thing I have to say about this event is it is for an excellent cause. (Oh, and I had a great visit with my family while there.) Definitely not going back for the next St. Jude Marathon.

Wow!!! That was fun!!!

I loved this marathon!!! The course was fantastic. The weather was crisp but great for running. The fans were a real treat. I've read some complaints about the hills. I found that humorous. I live on the prairie and we have more hills than this course. It was really pretty fast. This was very well organized and the Southern hospitality was outstanding. Hats off for a job well done. I will run this again. I even qualified for Boston here. -Paul Nelson Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada

Fun marathon, hilly and a few curves

This was a fun marathon to do, with perfect weather, 30-43 degrees. Memphis is a nice and clean town with excellent food and spirits to make it a weekend mini-vacation. The marathon is well organized; it has a good expo, the route is marked with clocks at each mile marker and had plenty of water/Gatorade and Gu stations. The race starts and ends downtown with a double-loop out to Overton Park, which makes it nice for your cheering section to keep your motivation up. Tell your support team that they can go inside the park to see you cross the finish line. Thanks to all of the people that showed up to support all of the runners and a good cause. It was a nice marathon to do, and no, the half-naked man running wasn't cold. The route is a bit hilly; it has a few turns and some streets have camber to them (you just have to find the best flat spot to run). The finish line ends inside Autozone's baseball park and runs along the outfield wall with numerous turns, which makes it hard to start a final kick. They should think about allowing your support team inside the post-race area to help you celebrate your finish. Since this race was in Memphis, home of St. Jude Hospital and funding coming from the marathon goes to them, out of cuiosity, where was the news/weather support? I watched the news and didn't see a hint of the race taking place the next day.

Cause outweighs anything else

St. Jude Memphis was my first half-marathon and I want to thank the many supporters of this race and St. Jude CRH. Was a great time and a better cause. The course was not overly hard, but demanding. I thought those who complained about hills really should go run somewhere where there are hills! The supporters along Poplar St. were great just when I needed encouragement. I would recommend this event highly to anyone - and especially for those first-time jitters, the St. Jude Marathon is just the cure for those as well.

Great Run! Will do it again

I ran the Memphis half-marathon last year and came back to do the full marathon this year. The course was great with gently rolling hills (no killer hills). This time of year in Memphis provides great running weather and this race day was no exception. It was well organized with aid stations well staffed. The race finished into a ball stadium which had great post-race food/drink. Crowd was pretty sparse during the second half. Need to improve traffic flow the morning of the race. I would suggest that the city of Memphis run the trolley that morning because a lot of the hotels are up and down the trolley line. The trolley didn't start running until after the start of the race. With the great course, temperature, and organization, I'll be back.

I loved this race.

This was my first race ever and I can't wait to run my next. I am hooked on running. This race has special meaning to me. My 10 month-old granddaughter is a St. Jude patient. She was diagnosed with AML when she was only 9 weeks old. She is in remission now thanks to the support/great medicine/prayers of the St. Jude staff and our friends and family. I ran this race as a St. Jude Hero to raise money but it also got me hooked on running in future marathons. I also stayed at the Peabody and loved it. I already have this race on my calendar for next year. The event staff were great and I really enjoyed the expo. And kudos to all the people who came out to cheer us on when the temps were only in the low 30s. For those of you complaining about the gifts being cheap, please remember this is a fundraiser for St. Jude's. My next race is the ING in Atlanta, GA.

What a heart-warming experience!

Ok, so it did not have all of the "extras" that I had in Pittsburg, but who cares. This was for a GREAT cause and the bystanders were an absolute inspiration. I did not fully understand the true meaning of running for a cause until this marathon. I hope to be injury free so I can run this race again one day. God bless the people of St. Jude. You guys did a great job! I walked away with a new outlook on marathon running, especially when I saw people who were running for family members or friends. It was amazing!

Great organization and great cause

I was really impressed with the organization of this race. The volunteers were wonderful, and I loved having aid stations every mile. The course was rolling but not too challenging. It does not matter if roads were cambered or certificates were not mailed out - what matters are the children in St. Jude's hospital. If children can suffer, we can run on cambered roads and live without a certificate. God bless St. Judes Hospital and those precious children.

I recommend it ONLY because it is a great cause

This is a great cause. I've never been so depressed and uplifted at the same time by the "in memory" signs, or the "my son is alive because you are running this race" sign. But other than the nature of the cause, the race itself is unremarkable. The Good: +Volunteers, as always, were great. +Good number of aid stations, sufficiently stocked with PowerAde and Gu, even for those bringing up the rear. +I thought the food at the end was excellent, especially since I was a late finisher (pizza; hot, cheesy chicken soup; sodas; much more). +The finish line at the ball field with locker rooms available was appreciated. +Decent size expo for a race this size. The could-be-improved: -UGLY cotton t-shirt. For a race this pricey (even considering it being a charity event), it should be a technical shirt. It must be Murphy's law, but it seems that the the people running the 5K get t-shirts in a much better color. You'd have to be pretty proud of your accomplishment to voluntarily wear this "diaper beige"-colored tee. -The course was unexceptional; only a few spots that I considered to be interesting or pretty. For some stretches you have to run alongside backed up traffic, and I could hardly breathe due to the exhaust fumes. -For an urban marathon with such a good cause, the spectators were incredibly sparse. Hats off though to the few that were out there - you always had encouraging words for all of us

Nice marathon, but needs a little work

This was my first marathon and I really enjoyed it. I do have a couple of suggestions to make next year's run even better. First, making runners walk upstairs to get to food after the race seems a bit silly (cruel?) to me, plus it hurt my already sore legs. Second, it would be nice to finish on Beale or near the river. Why not have the post-race stuff in Tom Lee Park along the river? There is certainly enough room. Third, it can get a bit lonely out there, so more entertainment would be appreciated. Overall, I really had a blast and will definitely be back next year. Thanks so much for such a good time.

lack of fuel on course!!!!

The course was enjoyable. Limited specatators, especially after mile 14.... Very suprised that there was no fruit - especially bananas - available for the participants. In fact, some of the volunteers were also suprised. Even though GU gels were offered some first-time users experienced the cramps - something to be aware of for the next time guys!!! Some disorganization, as volunteers were unsure where to send folks. Where were the massages after the race? However, overall I did enjoy the race - I kept my pace slower than I would have liked, as I did not know how I would do, knowing no snacks were available on the course!!!

Another great St. Jude Memphis Marathon

This was my 4th Memphis Marathon and every year it gets better. For the first time I was with a pace team (5:45) from mile 3 until mile 19 and I enjoyed that experience very much. Our informative and helpful pace leader, Fred, was a tour guide as well as a pacer. Learning about the city made the run even more interesting. Our group, as well as all the cheering volunteers along the way, was a big plus for me. Two of us from the group finished together in what was surely my most enjoyable marathon. The medal this year was very handsome.

Overall, a nice race!

It was a nice course and a BEAUTIFUL cold day! I'm sure the temperatures kept the spectator numbers down. It would have been nice to have a little more music along the way. My only negative comment is that one pace group was taking up way too much space (5-6 people wide). We had to keep maneuvering around them as they slowed down, then sped up, then slowed down again. They seem oblivious to the traffic jam they were causing. Hey, just a suggestion for next year's committee making the race better!

Camber problems!

As a Memphis-area resident who runs in many local races, it breaks my heart to have to agree with JJ about the camber problem. But it's true: although the course itself traverses some interesting urban territory, from Beale Street and the Mississippi River through urban parkland, I'm afraid I'll think twice, or three times, before running St. Jude again. If you are the sort of runner whose knees, or tibia, or ankles, make you strive diligently to keep to relatively flat surfaces, this course will frustrate you, and possibly even injure you. The early miles, through mile 6 or 7, are fine, since the runners take over the whole street and you can stick to the uncambered center of the road. But as the race continues, large stretches of it require that you keep to one lane next to the curb. To the RD's credit, the pain is distributed equally; at several points you switch from the far R lane to the far L lane. All this finally means, though, is that each knee/tibia combo shares the pain. The rule sheet handed out with the goodie bag warns you to keep strictly to this lane, insisting that any deviation - up onto the sidewalk, or out into the traffic lane, where the camber lessens - will result in immediate disqualification. This camber problem is a pity, frankly, because in most other respects this is a danged good race. The Memphis Runner's Track Club is a classy organization; although a couple of the middle miles between 8 and 12 seemed slightly off (my buddy and I, running several minutes apart, had equally skewed splits), every other aspect of timing, course marking, etc., was great. Every water stop was staffed by spirited volunteers. The post-race food was excellent. They announce your name as you're rounding the warning track in Redbirds Stadium. Cool, funky, sometimes quirky bands (including the obligatory Elvis impersonators) crop up every mile. Finally, the weather (33-40, mostly sunny, and calm) was perfect. Do something about the running lanes! We love you, St. Jude! But something needs to be done.

Great first-time marathon experience

The St. Jude folks were extremely supportive and motivating, as well as all of the hundreds of volunteers. I'm very pleased that I chose the St. Jude's Memphis Marathon as my first. The only negative thought I had along the way was that I wished there was a little more suppport for the last five miles of the race.

The camber killed me

Great marathon organization. The ladies in the information booth were there "all day long" and deserve a great deal of thanks. Great water, and fuel stops (more than enough) - very efficent. Only comment: The camber later in the race definitely affected my results. I liked the finish in the ballpark.

My son enjoyed the race

Just wanted to let you know my 16 year-old son thought it was great. He ran the 1/2 marathon so I'm only able to comment on this - not the whole marathon run. This was only his second race and he thought it was easy. The SMALL hills were nothing compared to his normal runs in cross country or in practice, and he loved the run along the Mississippi and thought the crowds and bands were a real joy, which made the race go by much quicker. Now my comments from reading some of your other letters. Our experience was positive. Yes, I would have liked to seen a pasta dinner in ONE hall for the participants and family (which I had planned to pay for); and I was a little disappointed with the festivites afterward, which were hard to find, but we were ready for someplace warm to sit and eat and of course nap so this was not a huge disadvantage for us personally. It was wonderful to finish inside the baseball field and to have the names announced. I thought the Christmas HOPE ornament was a great gift reminder for my son and something he will always remember when seeing this yearly. He would like to come back again, but of course if you could maybe warm it up about 10-15 degrees, it would be definitely appreciated. Hahaha. Thanks again for giving us this opportunity to run and do something positive for St. Judes.

First half-marathon, and it was the greatest

I don't know what everyone is complaining about! Did we forget that this race is about the children, and not the selfish adults?! I am a cancer survivor, and there is a little girl at St. Jude's who is two years-old that has the same thing I did over 30 years ago. That is why I did this race - it wasn't for myself. I think everything and everyone was awesome! My thanks to all who helped out!

A run worth repeating

Ran this in 2004. Enjoyed this year's half marathon run just as much. Came home and went to put my medal away and noticed how much BIGGER and PRETTIER the medals were this year than in '04. Couldn't ask for better running weather. Only complaint on organization was a misdirected sign for the full marathoners to the food for my girlfriend, who ran the full and qualified for Boston!! Great course. I only ran the half but would consider this course ideal for the full. The hills were so gently rolling that it just served to break up the use of the same-old muscles occasionally. And I LOVED the color of the shirt - it's called "Camel," not "dull brown"! Also loved the fact that the half marathoners received long-sleeved shirts like the full marathoners.

Good points and bad points....

This was only my second marathon. I raised money for St. Jude and was so excited about it. However, the incline in the road had me doubled over by mile 18 - and this has never happened before. I had to keep stopping and stretching. I lost all feeling in my left leg and had no proprioception left in my left knee. My "long" runs have all be around 20 miles and this has NEVER happened before. Had to have my psoas spasm worked on today. I was also disappointed in the crowd. I ran St. Louis last year and was really expecting the St. Jude crowd to beat the pants off St. Louis... but, it wasn't that way. There were long stretches where there were only one or two people. The pictures of the kids were motivating and the thankful parents were wonderful. All in all, I'm glad I raised the money and ran the marathon... but, I don't think there was any way I could have trained any better to prepare for that sideways incline in the road. I don't think I'd do it again.

Bonked in the cold!

My goal was to set a qualifying time for Boston. I was well on pace until mile 14. The cold started setting in and my legs died. The final 12 miles were mind against body just to finish. My biggest disappointment was with the pace group I ran with. The times fluctuated too much and we went from a 7:56 pace at mile 11 to a 6:58 pace at 12. I started to bonk at that point. By 15 my legs were completely gone. I can't blame this on the pace, but it didn't help. The course had a distinct camber on several miles.

A Fun Marathon for a Fantastic Charity

Interesting course sites, but would prefer a little less rolling in miles 13-18 and a little less camber in the last 6-7 miles. Aid stations were very good, and all race personnel and volunteers were very friendly. No, I didn't see nor expect the crowds of Boston or NY, but the people who did brave the cold to cheer us on were very encouraging... and they pulled me through a strong finish.

Has many features not found in other marathons.

If you like gels for energy, there are three gel stops: miles 9, 18, and 21. This is great because you don't have to carry you gels (GU). Also, how about water stations every mile?! Most marathons of this size do not have this feature. Very convenient for drink/gel timing. No race of 26.2 miles is perfect. But Memphis is definitely now one of my favorites because of the on-course support. Camber? So what! Run in the gutter or slightly out of the cones and that will eliminate most of the camber. Memphis was a PR for me after 11 marathons, and I qualified for Boston. Memphis rocks!!!

While the number of spectators was not great, let me tell you of one man whose sign simply read, "Thank you," - but his words said, "You saved my daughter's life." Obviously, his message was directed to all participants and volunteers. There were also friends and family of a child who didn't survive, but they were present, nonetheless, to support the runners supporting St. Jude. I thought the course had a good mix of unique downtown landmarks, such as: Auto Zone Park, Fed Ex Forum, the Pyramid, the riverfront, Beale Street, Rhodes College, scenic Overton Park, stately mansions, and the artsy area of Cooper-Young. I only noticed the camber once and ran along the cones where there was none. You can count on each mile, on the mile, marked with a prominent mile marker, a digital timer, and an aid station. I loved the continuity of always having PowerAde first and water second. I wish all marathons would uniformly have timing mats at 10K, 1/2 & 20 miles. The pizza, fruit, bagels, etc. were good but the soups, from McAllister's Deli, especially the tortilla, were awesome. If there was a post-race party last year, I didn't attend but I really enjoyed the Kattawar Bros. performance at Peabody Place.

great race

I don't understand the complaints. The course was beautiful and well planned out, the food at the post-race was great (I mean, we were cold and they had three different kinds of hot soup just for starters), and the people were wonderful. You don't run St. Jude's for the shirt - you run it for the kids with cancer and their families. If that's not enough, go for the scenery.

Great race, great cause

The organization of this race lived up to everything that I had read about it. The water stops were extremely well staffed with ample volunteers, water, Gatorade, trash bins and even porta-potties. The course itself had just enough elevation change to make things interesting. The long decline over the last 10K took a lot out of my legs and if I do this race again I will try and save a little more for this stretch. Fans were great in the downtown potion but thinned out a little after the half marathon broke off during miles 13-20. Memphis is a great city to stay in, though, and the downtown Memphis Marriott was a nice warm-up distance away from the start.

Great race, but hold it two to three weeks earlier

I have run three previous marathons (Richmond, Marine Corps and Nashville CMM). I would have to say it ranks right up there with Richmond and beats out Nashville and Marine Corps. MRTC did a great job on organizing this race but my only crticism is MRTC ought to think about holding it two to three weeks earlier. Over the last four years it has been pretty cold for two of the years and this year was no exception. I'm thankful that it was not windy, so, all in all it was a great day! Pros 1. Very well organized. 2. Lots of porta-potties along the course. 3. Water and Gatorade stops were very plentiful. I think we had water at least every mile. 4. Post-race feed is phenomenal. Hot soup provided by McCallister's Deli was fantastic. Pizza, beer, bagels, fruit, PowerAde, water, you name it, and MRTC provided it. This is the best post-race feed of any race I have run in. 5. Finishing in Auto Zone Park was fantastic. Also having the bag drop in the park was extremely convenient and the start was only a few blocks from the park. So start, finish and bag drop are all in the same area. Very convenient. 6. Medal was nice. 7. Spectators were not really numerous but the ones present were very supportive 8. Parking was plentiful downtown for locals and out-of-towners had everything right downtown available to them. 9. Memphis is a great city and there is lots to do. 10. Traffic control was adequate. I have read past reviews critical of this, but overall, it was sufficient. Cons 1. I would move this race up two or three weeks to ensure better weather. We just missed, by a day, a cold and windy day. (I would have had a tough time today, Sunday!) 2. The second half of the course was not as good as the first half. Some of the roads were in in poor shape around 13 to 17 miles. 3. Expo was a little disappointing. 4. I would like to have polo shirts sold by MRTC at the expo. They had 2004 polos but who wants them? Maybe they didn't sell well but I know a lot of runners who would have liked this. 5. I would have liked someone to call me in the morning to remind me to put my chip on my shoe. Just kidding, but I did race, really!!! All in all, this is a world-class event. As far as half marathons are concerned, I would say this is one of the top ones in the country. As for marathons, hard to beat, if you prefer smaller marathons. One last comment. Memphis is famous for barbeque and ribs. Rendevous is downtown and highly touted BUT it is serously overrated. I took two out-of-town guests there and was very embarrassed. It was awful. I am surprised Japan did not declare war against us after President Bush took their Prime Minister there! I should have followed my instincts and driven out to Corky's for a taste of Memphis - a good taste, that is! This is the second time Rendevous has let me down, so my advice: go with Corky's.

Better for half marathon than the full

The start and finish are great - inside the Fed Ex Forum to stay warm at the start and a neat finish into Auto Zone Park. It was most of the stuff in the middle that was not so good. First, the run is really set for a half marathon. Halfers run with you the first 13 miles and make it hard to find your pace (there seem to be about 10,000 half runners, then after the split you are alone)! There are hardly any spectators, and the second half is a lonely and hilly run. They ask you to not wear headphones, but this is one run where I really needed them. Very limited music for marathoners; and the only spectators are friends of other runners. I am the eternal optimist, but I found the whole marathon experience here quite a disappointment. Next time I will run the half, to support the great cause of St. Jude's hospital.

Good race; could be great w/ a few improvments

A very well organized race. The start had plenty of port-a-potties (no waiting in line) and the pace groups were easy to find and follow. The aid station volunteers at each mile were great, and other volunteers were helpful!!! They were very enthusiastic and they were always ready with water or PowerAde. The overall fan support was a little light, especially in the last four miles when it was needed the most. The "spirit stations" could also stand to be a little more spirited and upbeat. Overall, the course was great... but improvement is needed with a few sections of the course where the camber was harsh. Overall, I recommend running Memphis. This was my first marathon and 2nd for my buddy who ran it with me.

Fabulous, challenging, and very well organized

This was my first race - I did the half. I really enjoyed the course. It was really pretty, though there were a few hills. I recommend it for first-timers, and for veterans. The race was well organized, the course was fabulous, and there were bands at many of the mile markers. The support system was great. If it's not so cold next year, I'm going to do it again.

Recommendable race/fun

About the guy complaining about the completion certificate: he has many valid points. First off, he is entitled to his opinions (which were more than just opinions - they were facts). I don't exactly agree with everybody's comments either. But the St. Jude Marathon does appear to be getting on the cheaper side, even though the cost of the race has not been lowered. It is cheesy to have to print off a certificate. It's not the cost of the paper to print it. It's the idea that they used to mail it and NOW they don't; you used to be able to let your support team eat at the post-party and NOW they can't; you used to get something besides a t-shirt in your goody bag and NOW you don't! GET IT?! If it were not for their supporters (family/friends), many people would not run. Let them celebrate our accomplishments with us at the post-party! They're just as much about it as us runners. We're all supporting the children at St. Jude!

Camber, Camber, Camber

I had been reading the past year's comments and noticed many people commenting on the camber in Memphis. They were right. From miles 19-21, the course has a left-side camber of approximately 8% grade. This cause my first-ever IT inflammation so bad that I went from a 2:55 pace to having to stop, stretch, walk, etc. and dropping to a 3:02 in just the last five miles. And those in the past who did not like the BLUE shirt, be thankful - this year the shirt was a dull brown. Now, the race was a lot of fun, the bands were ok, and the crowd seemed a little low this year compared to in the past, but it was 32 degrees at the start. Would not run this course again unless they change the course to flatter (less cambered) roads.

You've got to do Memphis!

What a great race! It was very COLD at the start (low 30's), and partly cloudy, but the course was just wonderful: rolling hills, great scenery (loved those mansions, as well as Elvis!). More than anything, you can't help but feel good about supporting St. Jude Hospital. Now that I know more about them, I'm going to select them for charitable giving in the future! The pictures of the kids who need help (posted along the course), as well as parents of those kids who had passed on (but their parents still showed up to show their appreciation for the cause) were just awe-inspiring. What a great course and what a great cause! Memphis is a neat little town to visit too, and the Peabody was well worth the money!

Fans are great; post-race was the best so far

Chose Memphis from among four options. Glad I did. The people of Memphis are great at cheering us on. We had everything from retired folks sitting on their porch to college students as we passed by their dorms. The post-race food and drink are unbelievable, as were the race volunteers. I've run a number of the big marathons, but for a good total experience, I am going back to Memphis!

Very nice race for a great cause

Loved the race. Aid station at every mile, which I have not seen at other races. Bands along the course, good crowd support but not a large number fans. Great post-race food. Volunteers go out of their way for you. Miles 14 through 17.5 had a slight uphill grade and sparse crowds, so that is the toughest part of the race. I would highly recommend running it. As for the guy complaining the he didn't get a finisher certificate (and instead, just got a link to an online version), I didn't want one, so they would have wasted money sending it to me. I'll send you three cents so you can get a sheet of paper to print it on.

A really great city to run in

The organization and support for this marathon is outstanding. And I really liked the finish inside the beautiful ballpark. Weather was perfect and fan support good for those that were able to make it out. There is a fair amount of running on the slant by the side of the road but treks through parks by the zoo mix things up. Bring your own gel packs - I missed the first gel stop somehow and believe me, I was looking for it. And even though the course is not fraught with killer hills, there are many frequent rolling hills that can take a toll over time. Be ready for a bit of an incline (and possible headwind) around mile 24 and a half - that sapped me - and I missed Boston qualifing by 21 seconds. But overall it was a great weekend in Memphis and I highly recommend the experience. Skip Beale Street though, and hang out in other parts of this cool city.

Nice race for a veteran or first-time marathoner

I really enjoyed this marathon. It's on the small side, although not tiny. The course is flat, but not TOO flat, and it's not a double loop (I HATE those!). Organizers were so generouse with fuel along the course and with the huge post-race buffet. Spectators were really motivating and kind. Sororities and fraternities manned aid stations and were totally into cheering us on. Running past the St. Jude's housing facility and hospital was humbling. There were probably 3 2-mile stretches (that's 3 2-milers, as in 6 miles altogether) where you didn't see anyone. That was lonely. But the rest of the course was filled with people. I thought it was very well done!!

Hometown runner embarrassed by hometown race

I wouldn't normally post a comment about this race, but I just received my finisher's certificate. Oh wait, I didn't. Anyone who participated in this race received a web link to a finisher's certificate to print out. This was stupid. I am embarrassed for Memphis, St. Jude and Wain Rubinstein who are associated with this cheapness. We wonder why the Memphis Marathon has not taken off like Nashville and Little Rock. Use this as an example, and it is definitely a reflection of the lack of quality of this race. People are excited about the color of the T-shirt, but the blue is only a way to detract from people talking about the lack of anything worthwhile in the goody bag. I paid $85 to run this race. Now I can buy 9 sandwiches and get 1 free (woohoo!), which is even more useless to anyone who is not local. Yes, I waited until the last minute to sign up, but as local runner, I have the luxury to wait on how my body feels and the weather forecast. The course is decent, except for the cambers - especially on the stretch of East Parkway between Poplar and North Parkway. I was running on the cones and a race official was yelling at me to get inside. You run 20 miles and have to deal with the road slant. You think I wanted to be that close to the exhaust of the cars? You are allowed to run on the cone line, not outside of it (and I wasn't). I was on Linden and the traffic cop was so lazy that he wouldn't get out of his car. A car cut me off and all the cop did was honk his horn (too late as well). There were cyclists on the course inside the cones who thought they were so helpful by offering words of encouragement. They shouldn't have been on the course at all and I didn't want them on either side of me while I was running. I told them to get off the course and they decided to hiss at me the rest of the way. Where were the course monitors then? The post-race party was fantastic, however. Oh wait, there wasn't one, but we could all meet on Beale Street later completely unaffiliated. What a welcome to Memphis! I understand that this is a charitable event but it's also possible to make it a quality one as well.

GREAT RACE!!! GREAT CITY!!!

Would highly recommend this race to anyone looking for a December marathon. The weather was perfect for running and the organization of the pre- and post-race was outstanding. The crowds were not large in number but the people that did come out were very supportive. Great finish in the ballpark; best post-race I've ever seen. If you're lucky enough to stay at one of the downtown hotels everything you need is within walking distance. I will definitely be back to do this race again.

Awesome weekend in Memphis

First of all, glory be to the Saturday marathon!!! Other race organizers please take note: this is fabulous because it gives visiting runners the chance to recover and/or party it up on the Saturday night (eg R. Stones or restaurant dinner) and spend the Sunday seeing the city and spending their endorphin-charged dollars (Graceland, Sun Studios, etc. then drive/fly out). I PR'd in Memphis with my first sub-3, improving 8 minutes on Niagara Falls 6 weeks earlier. The course is gently undulating but not hilly. I suggest the marathon start 30 mins before the half because it is very difficult to regulate your pace against runners going that much faster. Also, the spectators were almost non-existent in the second half so it's difficult to stay pumped and motivated. Finally, the best finish line and post-race catering I have seen in 8 marathons including the big US ones. The Coors Lite was a super idea, I thought. Thanks Memphis, you rock!!!!

Memphis rocked

A great, well organized smaller marathon. Great start and finish areas. Hanging out in the indoor luxury box section of the stadium was phenomenal. Lots of bathrooms, no lines. The indoor massages and the locker room showers were great afterward. The course was probably the perfect balance of rolling hills (nothing major but just enough to give all the muscles an equal workout). There was a clock at every mile. I would only change the one out-and-back section near the end. I didn't notice too much camber but did note the car exhaust when running around the park the second time. The crowds, although not large, were enthusiastic (or maybe that was because of my Elvis T-shirt). The finisher's medal and T-shirt were both very nice. (I don't know what the other person didn't like about the design and color - I can't say that I have any others that color.) The race was for a great cause. Memphis is a fun city to party in afterward. What is not to like? My only complaint (a small one) was that I didn't get one of those Nike hats. I signed up fairly early but apparently the 1/2 marathoners and 5K runners were also eligible. You'd think that they would acknowledge the marathoners with the premium schwag. There were only about 1500 or so marathoners. You'd think Nike could have hooked us all up. And most of the logistical complaints noted elsewhere were due to the fact that there was a 1/2 marathon and a 5K as well. It's a shame everyone didn't get the soup. It was great! As was the hot chocolate. I would probably do away with the nasty Domino's pizza and Coors Lite though. Overall, a great marathon. Oh, and the Stones were great too! If you have to run one in Tennessee, this is the one!

Fantastic Marathon Experience!

I had an absolutely wonderful experience. This was my first marathon. I chose the St. Jude Memphis Marathon for my first marathon for several reasons. One, all the comments about the Memphis Marathon on MarathonGuide.Com were excellent. The clock/water/porta-potty at every mile definitely sold me. Also, I wanted my first marathon to be away from St. Louis (I live in Swansea, IL). I also wanted colder weather. I figured Memphis at the beginning of December would offer a better chance of colder weather than other big marathons. I was correct. December 3rd, 2005, was overcast, a slight breeze, and 52 degrees. Perfect running weather for me! Also, the course volunteers were fantastic!! Everyone was so helpful. Even though I never needed any assistance, I felt assured than any volunteer would have helped me if I needed it. I especially liked the college folk/rock band on the backend of the race. The band was somewhere right before or right after the 20-mile marker. Also, the cheerleaders cheering somewhere after the 24-mile marker, but just before we made the turn south onto 3rd Street were tremendous. Most of the runners by that point were in a lot of pain. Those cheerleaders brightened up my outlook and gave me the boost to finish the race. I don't remember what was written on their sweatshirts, but the shirts were red. They were very enthusiastic and cheering at the top of their lungs. I loved it! The finishing area inside the stadium was neat. It gave the spectators an easy viewing point of the finish line. My brother has run the Chicago Marathon 3 times and the St. Louis Marathon twice. He said the Memphis Marathon will spoil me because neither Chicago nor St. Louis has the clock/water/porta-potty arrangement like Memphis. I enjoyed my marathon experience and will return to the St. Jude Memphis Marathon!!!

great, well-organized marathon for great cause

I hope others find these comments helpful as I know I use them as a guide to determine whether or not to run a particular marathon. 1) ORGANIZATION/EXPO - extremely well-organized smallish expo, but great deals to be had here! I also got a very nice $20 Nike tailwind hat for FREE because I was one of the first 1000 to register (and I didn't register all that early). 2) SHIRT - 100% cotton, ugly design and color (medium blue?); I will probably never wear it. 3) MEDAL - very classy. Round shape, 1/2 marathoners were in silver; marathoners similar but gold color. 4) AID STATIONS - water/Gatorade (various flavors from blue, yellow, red) EVERY mile with Gu (I had espresso and orange) handed out at mile 9, 15, 21. Plus for the most part, water and Gatorade were in different colored cups so it made it easier to figure out which to grab! Great idea. 5) VOLUNTEERS - excellent. As stated, there was a volunteer just before every water stop with a sign indicating "Water ahead." 6) COURSE - as advertised in that it was not hilly, but it was definitely rolling the entire way. Still a fast course and there were digital clocks posted every mile. I use my watch to monitor my mile splits, and the splits were definitely well-marked such that I never missed a split (although I think one mile was too long and another was too short?). There was also a wave start which was great so there was never a crowd. Another plus is that the overall placements and split times are based on chip times so there is no penalty for starting farther back (in fact, they don't even post your gun time in the results). This is NOT the case in many other races (Boston uses gun time for their placement; unfair when you it takes 15 minutes to cross the start line; Twin cities does the same thing). Also since splits are given in chip time, it is easier to figure out your splits (in other words, splits are not composed of actual split + time it took to cross start line). Plus they had chip mats placed at the 10K, 1/2 marathon, and 20-mile mark which seemed accurate (unlike other marathons where the mats were off). This allowed me to really calculate my pace for the 1st 10K and compare it to the last 10K. 7) PACE GROUPS - this was the first year for pace leaders, and they had a pacer every 5 minutes starting from 3:15 onwards which was a bonus. I'm not sure how the other pacers fared, but my pacer was 2 minutes ahead at the half (which I think may have been problematic for some trying to follow) and finished slightly faster than one minute faster than goal. 8) CITY/LAYOUT - very nice to have hotels very close to the finish line. I stayed at the Doubletree which was literally right across the street from the entrance to the AutoZone Park (baseball field which is the finish line for both the 1/2 and the full). I simply walked across the street and was right in my hotel room. Hotel was also only 2 blocks from the start. 9) CROWD SUPPORT - there were bands along the way, but nowhere near what you're going to get in the bigger marathons like Chicago or Boston. The spectators present were very supportive and friendly and well appreciated. There could be more bands, but honestly I was so focused on my race that it didn't matter to me. 10) PORTA-POTTIES - very plentiful at the start! Wow, when do you EVER get that? I don't think I saw anyone peeing along the side of the road. Plus at least 3-4 porta-potties were available every mile at the water stops. I had to wait in line twice at Boston (difficult to find and then there were only 2 once I found one). Here I never saw a line. Post-race in Autozone Park with real bathrooms and showers for the runners. Overall I'm very pleased with the organization of the marathon and the fact that it all goes towards a great cause is a bonus. Will definitely consider running it once again.

Good cause, great city & slightly challenging.

There were several good things about this marathon. First, Memphis is a great city that definitely supports this marathon. Second, there were more than enough aid stations with volunteers. It was impressive. Third, the restaurants in the downtown area are all close and several offer discounts to runners on Friday night. Fourth, it is very organized in all respects (packet pick-up, start line, finish line, etc). Finally, the finish in the ballpark is just plain cool! There are only a couple of things I didn't like too much. First, the course is NOT flat. As another runner put it, you are constantly running up or down an incline. There were no major hills... just 26.2 miles of 'gently' rolling terrain, so don't expect an easy PR. Second, an organized pasta dinner for all registered runners would have been better than having to find the right restaurant in the area. Finally, while the finish at the stadium was cool, the long walk up the stairs from the field was almost cruel after 26.2 miles. But honestly, I wouldn't change the finish at all. All in all, this is a good race for anyone looking for an interesting city to run in. It is definitely for a good cause!!

Excellent Marathon

I went into Memphis expecting a nice course, great organization and good fan support - and got everything that I had hoped for, not to mention a lot of fun! The course was rolling in the beginning, which I loved. Running up Beale Street twice was great. The second half had a constant climb for 4-5 miles but was primarily downhill for the last 10K. There were some long straight stretches in the last half which were a bit wearing. I would have loved to have run through the park again on the way back like we did on the way out. I also thought the management of the half marathon and marathon was excellent. I know the Baltimore Marathon has problems with this but Memphis seemed to have its act together by starting everyone out together and having each race have its own stage to finish on. Organization was fantastic and I love the clocks and water stops at every mile. Not only were there water stops at every mile but the volunteers were fantastic. The spectators were primarily of people running but they were plentiful. Memphis certainly welcomed the runners. I stayed at the Peabody which is very convenient but probably once is enough there. The Doubletree is right at the start finish also. The Stones were in town and staying at the Peabody. I saw Mick, Keith and Charlie in the lobby. Overall, I got everything that I expected, and would love to come back to Memphis - not only for the marathon but to visit. Thanks Memphis!

Great race to run!!!

St. Jude was wonderful, running for a good cause. I enjoyed everything except the hills. They were bad for my knees. I didn't realize there would be so many of them. I still made my best time ever but not without a little pain. I would recommend this race to anyone. I had a great weekend. Thanks Memphis, I'll be back!!!

Thank ya, thank ya very much!

It's been a lifetime goal to visit Graceland, and tying it into the marathon was extra special. There are many positives about the race, including: excellent organization; mile markers, port-a-potties and water every mile; and, excellent fan support. The finisher's medal has to be one of the nicest around. There were some negatives as well (not to take away from the race, but future runners should know). The course is run mostly on the side of roads where you're not running on a flat surface (try running by the pylons and some of this can be avoided). The 2nd half of the route went through lots of busy streets, where police had some difficulties controlling vehicles. Also, lines of idling vehicles created horrible fumes at times. Overall, a very well organized race, with some good undulations (challenging for me - my Chicago and Lincoln previous marathons were flat), and excellent fan support.

Clean bathrooms with no lines pre-race!

This was the most well-organized race I've found. The start/finish is great with clean bathrooms without long lines (and locker rooms to shower in after the race!) and a warm indoor area to wait for the race to start! Great food and drinks after the race, too! Even the t-shirt and medal are great, and the course is quite flat with a decent number of spectators! This race is tough to beat.

well organized, but slower runners beware!

The elevation chart is truly deceptive, as someone else noted - the constant ups and downs, plus the steady climb from miles 11-14, really took a toll on this first-timer who did finish but far slower than anticipated. Roads are heavily cambered - so much so it was hard to find flat running surface in some spots. The roads through the park in miles 8-9 are severely sloped and rutted as well. Good crowd support in the fist half - in general the first half is a blast, with very little crowd support in the second half except the spirit station volunteers. Although this is the most well organized race I have ever run (the water, Powerade and CLOCK at each mile composed a true luxury!) there was little food left by the time I finished. I'm amazed to see people raving about the food as there was none when I finished except some hot chocolate, green bananas and packaged cookies. What soup? Too bad there wasn't any left over for the slow runners - I certainly could have used something before the walk back to my hotel! They also need to decide what the true cutoff for finish is. The website said the finish line is open for 7.5 hours, yet all materials at the race said no official times would be given after 6 hours. I was able to finish in that time but others might not. Hope this is clarified in the future. Not to be a wet blanket - once again this is a well organized race with deceptive hills, run on heavily cambered roads. Nice finish in the park; the announcer didn't read my name but I was too tired to care at that point!

Great support

Memphis and St. Jude should be proud!

Way to go Memphis and St. Jude. This race is tops in our book. My wife and I are from Memphis and we are so proud of how wonderful this race is. It is organized, the course is scenic and the food after the race is awesome! It is a thrill to finish the race at the beautiful AutoZone Park while your name is being announced over the loudspeaker. The spirit surrounding the race is very motivating and the spectators along the way keep you going. We cannot wait until the race next year.

A Great Finish!

What a great race! It was well organized and I loved the hotel discounts! The Peabody was fabulous - AND the Rolling Stones were staying there too!!! We ALMOST saw them - but they got in the elevator too quickly. But we did see Elvis! I even had my picture taken with him after the race. My only complaint was that the line for the massages wasn't moving at all - so I gave up. Loved the Dri-Fit cap and LOVED finishing up at the baseball field. I didn't qualify for Boston - but I did get a PR! I'd do this one again.

Good experience for a great cause!!

Overall - a good experience for a great cause. Very good: * cause (love those kids!) * medal (one of the best I have) * water stops (well run) * finishing stretch (enter a small stadium, with good crowd support) * general race organization (wonderful) * police support (wonderful with traffic control and positive comments to runners) * town (my first time in Memphis - the city rocks with nightlife!) * runners (very friendly group, including the 50-staters who had a large group in town for a quarterly gathering prior to race) Good: * crowd support (not a lot in terms of numbers, but high quality - thanks!!) * expo (not bad for a small race) * hotel ($89/night at Red Roof) Enhancement opportunities: * course: 1) hillier than expected (note: out-and-back dog leg followed by a healthy incline at miles 25-26!), 2) camber (doubt much can be done with this, but the camber of the streets was very noticeable, with few flat alternatives such as sidewalk available) * post-race: slim pickings after 5:30 finish or so * packet pick up (need more signs re: parking, etc.) * truckload of obnoxious kids tearing down stations late in the race Luck of the Draw: weather (mid-30s - low 50s, cloudy, windy) Overall - a good experience for a great cause & I'll be back!

great race in a fun destination

I have run over 40 marathons and found this race to be a pleasure. Just the right size - not too large and not too small, with a great organization running it, a very good course which was not to flat or hilly, in a city which knows of the race and gets behind the race. Being from the Northeast and having run in some Southern cities where there was not a lot to do, I came without high expectations. Instead I found a fun city with a lot to do. You have to stay downtown, preferably at the Peabody (unique experience alone); go to Beale Street for the clubs and eat ribs at the Rondevous. It was great that the race was Saturday morning so you could go out and party after the race on Beale Street and enjoy ribs that night. Memphis is a fun city. The city really seems to support the race. I have run in places like San Francisco, Charlotte, and New Orleans where people don't even realize a marathon is going on. But Memphis is very supportive. The course is not pancake flat but does not have any large hills. It goes though very nice parts of the city with a lot to look at. The rolling hills are just right and the layout is very well conceived. The size of the field is not overwelming like New York and Chicago but not so small that you get lonely. In all I strongly recommend this race and would go again. A few tips: Stay at the Peabody if you can, but no matter what, stay near Autozone Park so you can go back for the post-race food and party. The food ran out so don't wait too long to get some of the food - it was good and a large selection but unfortunately it ran out. Keep up the good work and add this race to your schedule if possible. Don't forget to enjoy the city; there are a lot of fun things to do.

Nice first race. Beautiful town. Nice people.

This was my first marathon and was what I expected. No major complaints. The best things about the race; the cause (St. Jude's Children's Hospital), the people, the race scenery, Beal St., and the race size(1500+ in the marathon). The bad things about the marathon were not that bad. The race was hilly, especially uphill in the 3rd quarter, but the scenery and fan support were good. Fans were few but enthusiastic in the 2nd half. Other runners and support crew were friendly. Powerade (not Gatorade) and water at every mile with gel packs around miles 21 and 22. Weather was nice, 50's and overcast. Post-race food was ok, not great. I fnished almost exactly in the middle of the full marathon field and they were out of soup when I got there. The soup everyone talks about was gone, eaten by all the half marathoners and folks faster than me I guess. I wasn't there for the soup though and overall was glad I did the race. People were even friendly on the streets and at Beal St. We stayed downtown and walked most everywhere. Heard the pickpockets were bad; kept everything in front pockets and had no problems. Will probably do again. I like that weather. Don't underestimate the hills. Don't stay out too late on Beal St. the night before. Don't go so fast you miss the scenery. The Fed Ex Forum, the Mississippi River, Beal St., the Pyramid and the Red Birds baseball stadium were all great.

Proud of my home town's efforts

The St. Jude Marathon course was great. Having water or sports drinks, bathrooms, great volunteers and a course clock at EVERY mile was fantastic. The course was kind to the legs and very scenic considering a mile and a half were through a city park. Great expo, well organized. Great finish line, lots of food and beautiful finisher's medal. See ya'll in 2006.

worth the drive

It was a 5 1/2 hour drive from SW Missouri to Memphis, but well worth the drive! My friends and I ran the half marathon and we thought it was great! From the t-shirts and hats to the best post-race food I've ever seen, this race was a winner and there is no greater cause than children! The spectators were energetic and the course support was excellent and Memphis was a fun and exciting town with awesome blues and BBQ! I'll most definitely do this one again!

VERY GOOD RACE

This was my second St Judes. I ran the 1/2 in 2004. I love the city, the organization and especially the spectators and volunteers. I smiled the entire 26.2 miles! How can you not smile when so many people are cheering you and wishing you well? It is also for a wonderful cause. I would have liked running along the river longer rather than a couple of blocks 2 times. Also, by the time I had finished (4:39) there was not much food. Also, they ran out of GU on the course. Now for the really BAD part. My chip timing was off by 5 minutes!! I started with my friend and finished with her. They have her time correct but mine 5 minutes slower. That is just a slap in the face when I worked so hard. It's hard enough to finish 26.2 miles, but adding 5 minutes to your times is just wrong. I actually cried because of it.

The first half was scenic and a lot of fun. As always, the volunteers that worked the aid stations were great. Thanks to all of them. It was a good cause for St. Jude. I will be back.

A Good December Choice

Course: The start and finish elevations are very close, but you are always going up or down a slight grade; it was never flat. The constant camber may also cause problems for some (it did for me). I wouldn't run here expecting an easy PR, but the course is not difficult. The Race: The support of the volunteers and the police were first-rate. The race was excellently organized. It's a fun and stress-free race.

Well organized, good course, great marathon!

I want to applaud the organizers of this race. It was one of the best I've done. First, St. Judes is a worthy charity for which to run. As for the race itself, on-line registration was easy; packet pick-up went smoothly; the course was fun and interesting; the start and finish were well organized; the expo was small, but that's not the reason I was there. I highly recommend this race.

Disappointing after last year, still okay

Last year this was my first marathon and it was great, so I had high hopes for this year. The pre-race organization, expo, and post-race amenities were still awesome, but the support on the course was terrible! The traffic control was very poor, with cars on the course and police officers allowing vehicles to cross at bad times, forcing runners to slow down or even stop at times. In some places the cones were placed so strangely neither runners nor cars knew where they were supposed to be. Spectator/spirit-station support was fairly good for the first half of the race but after mile 13 it was practically nonexistent. Granted, the weather was crummy but it was disheartening to see some of the acts who WERE there just standing and watching, or packing up to go. For a race that started and ended so well, it was a shame to have such poor organization on the course.

Would definitely recommend this run to anyone.

This was my 6th half marathon and is in the top three. The music half marathons in Phoenix and Nashville were just slightly better because they were bigger and had more music and roadside supporters. It would be great if the community would come out more to support the run. The course was great, slightly challenging at times, but basically a nice flat course. The water stations were very well organized and had plenty of volunteers. The food at the end was great. The soup hit the spot. Thanks for a great run, Memphis. I look forward to running this half again.

Wonderful race!

This was my 'post-Chicago-Marathon-don't-sit-around-and-gain-10-pounds' race and it FAR surpassed my expectations. Chicago was disappointing (too many people, not for a good cause...) This race (I did the half-marathon) was the perfect size, the volunteers were AMAZING, the people of the city were incredibly friendly, and the overall feeling of the race was positive. There were many signs with pictures of St. Jude's kids on them to provide genuine inspiration and to remind you why you're putting your body through this. Other than that, the finish line was well organized and the baseball park was a great place to end it and to meet up with friends and family. The post-race food was DELICIOUS and plentiful (very important to me!). I received a totally sweet Nike hat, I liked the race tee shirt, and we also got a wonderful St. Jude's calendar with pictures drawn by the kids. One suggestion: More Elvis! I'll definitely be making the 8-hour drive again next year to do this race.

A great experience!

Well, I just came back from my weekend in Memphis -- this was my first St. Jude Marathon but my 6th altogether. I had a fabulous time (even though I didn't post a PR), so here's my rundown of the 2005 event: Organization: Great! I loved the expo and had no problems getting my bib and goodies. I liked the shirt and loved getting the free NIKE hat for registering early! I had no problems understanding the course - each mile was marked and had a timer. I followed one of the pace leaders for most of the time and that was great (esp. since I hadn't trained as well as I should have for this one, so I was just wanting to finish strong and have a good time!). The course: Great, great, great! Folks everywhere and I appreciated this since it was a chilly morning. Aid stations at every mile and lots of spectators along the way. I liked the scenery and talked with some runners along the way. (I didn't bring my headphones since the rules said not to, and though I saw lots of people with them, I'm glad that I didn't use them, as it made me much more conscious of the beautiful city around me!) Sometimes those half-marathon turn-offs can be difficult (esp. when you are tired!) but it seemed to me that the spectator support was so much stronger with the second loop. I really needed that! I loved the final jaunt in the stadium (a comfy spot for my husband to wait for me!) and the food was great afterwards. It's probably the only time that I will hear my name over a PA system because of my running! The city/ hotel: We got a great deal at the Madison Hotel through the marathon website and it was well worth the money. We would definitely stay there again. The city was great and it's a good thing I ran a marathon because I ate a TON of great food! Good job organizers! It's so nice to run and help such a great organization! I'll be back!

One of the Best

I ran this race two years ago and have always wanted to come back. I made it back this year and it was even better. A great course with run-able hills and gentle downhill slopes that let you gain speed rather that beat yourself. Nice expo. A 'wave' start at 1 minute intervals let you start running as soon as you got to the start line. Great concept. Nice bunch of spectators and the volunteers were tops. Also, the money is for a great cause.

A nice, med. size race; great for first-timers.

My first-ever marathon was this one in 2003. The organization has improved a lot since then. Having a minor league shower and locker room to clean up after the race was a pure luxury! WOW! The best after-race food was the hot bean soup. Forget the lousy pizzas, give me bean soup on a chilly day anytime. I recommend this race for anyone but especially for the beginner. It is big enough to hook the novice into doing more and bigger marathons. Thanks Memphis!

Hat is real nice and best food

The gear pick-up needs to be improved, but super ending and nice course. Your food is the best of the 3 marathons we run annually. We also run the Nashville's Music City and the Chicago Marathon. Both of these marathons do a better job marketing their marathon. Also, Memphis is the smallest of the marathons. I have to seek your marathon's site out in order to register, due to the fact I know it is held the first Saturday in December. I have received the registration information for the April 29, 2006 Music City Marathon already. My buddy and I have not received anything on the St. Jude's Marathon in the mail for registration and it's late August. I ran the Memphis Marathon for the first time in 1996 and have run every year it was held since. In 2001 the marathon was not held, if I am correct.

fun finish, supportive spectator, well run

This was my first marathon that was not a huge one (Chicago and San Diego were previous races) and I really liked the smaller size. The start was good, with only a 4-minute difference from gun to crossing the start; within less than 1 mile I was able to run at my desired pace without having to run around runners that seeded themselves poorly. The course was decent; the only problem I had was that 2nd half of the course was confined to half the width of the street, and the many of the streets had a pretty good camber to them, so in order to find flat footing you had to run either outside the cones or in the flat section by the gutter. There are some hills here, with a tough one for the final mile. It seems that about 2/3 of the starters opt for the half-marathon, so very clear running in the 2nd half; spectators are limited, but very enthusiastic and after 13.1 you have them cheering explicitly for YOU (I usually was 10 yards from the nearest runner). Great finish in the baseball park, good food afterward, choice of beers (I just ran 26 miles, forget the 'light' crap) and a fun town to hang out in. Weather last year ('04) was fantastic but I don't think it was the norm.

Good flat course

The St. Jude Memphis Marathon was a fun run to do. The organization was good, especially for us St. Jude Heroes. St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is a wonderful organization, and they took care of their volunteer runners very well. It was a pleasure to work with St. Jude's to raise money for their kids. The water stops every mile were nice, and finishing inside the baseball stadium was good too! The course took you past some of Memphis' best known landmarks, and being entertained by an Elvis impersonator while running was great. The Christian band playing next to St. Judes was also very good. I wouldn't change a thing.

Excellent Race - Manage Future Growth

This was one great race!! I read some negative comments on the medal. I thought it was very classy - not real large, but neat, just like the race. The first couple of miles were open enough to allow passing as needed. The ballpark finish, particularly the shower facilities are the best I've ever seen. Gave the runners a chance to wind down and talk to each other. The ONLY negatives: the bars listed as having discounts for runners after the race had never heard of it. Several others expressed the same thing. Also, the spectators were great, but I don't know how they knew about it. There was nothing on the evening news the two nights before the race.

Can't wait till next year!

What a great race! This was my first marathon and I can't imagine a more perfect first. The volunteers were wonderful, from the packet pickup to the start/finish and at every aid station in between. The sights were wonderful and made the route pass fast. I wasn't prepared for quite so much traffic--there were a few places where traffic had built up enough that you were breathing in a lot of exhaust--and there seemed to be a lot more hills than I remembered from the elevation map, but a fantastic experience regardless. Can't wait till next year!

Nice Extras

Great goody bag and shirt. You also get a nice Nike running cap if among first 2,000 to register. Be sure to bring ID to pick up race # and chip if you pre-register. I left mine in the car, and they absolutely would not bend that rule despite my pleas. Reasonably flat but somewhat dull city marathon course. Need a better system at the start to keep slower runners from pushing up to the front. Plenty of water stops, but only two gel stations. Post-race food and showers a plus.

Best Organized Marathon I have Ever Run

First of all, what's with these people complaining about the size of the medal and not enough bands on the course? Are you there to run or are you there to collect big medals and listen to music? This is a first-class, intimate, extremely well-organized event. They must have listened to comments last year as every mile marker was accurate with a digital clock in front of it and a volunteer there to insure no one moved them. There were aid stations every single mile with volunteers even holding up signs a hundred or so yards ahead of it alerting runners to the stations. It's a bit hillier than the elevation profile (especially the first half) but not difficult. Great finish area inside the ballpark finishing by first base and having your name called out on the p.a. is unforgettable as well as wonderful volunteers. Loved the post-race food also of bagels, pizza, cookies, etc. The race is just the right size with plenty of running room (I did the full) and passing the kids in front of St. Jude's Children's Hospital is a moment I will never forget. I recommend this race whole-heartedly. If you want a big medal, go elsewhere or to a trophy shop; if you want to run a well-organized, intimate course with good course support and a spectacular finish and proceeds going to a worthy cause, run Memphis.

Awesome marathon... A must-do!

Great marathon!! There is no better way to support a great organization like St. Jude. The layout of the course makes it a great way to see the city. The course was, however, a little hillier than I expected, but overall a fast course. Every mile – like clockwork, pun intended - there was a volunteer with a sign to let you know that an aid station was ahead. Clocks, water, PowerAde, toilets, etc... were stationed at every mile, which was a nice touch. The finish down the first baseline was cool and the steps were not too hard to climb. The packet was very informative – your “Miss Manners” page should be standard for all race packets. Also, the website had everything you needed. There was a map with hotel locations, parking lots, sights to visit and more. Be forewarned, the hotels fill up quickly! I ended up staying in West Memphis (across the river). It was only a 10-minute drive to the start line. Plus, I parked on a side street 3 blocks from the start/finish for FREE!! The expo is not very large, but it’s adequate. The packet pickup was very organized and there were no waiting lines. I got my packet, verified my chip and got my t-shirt in less than 5 minutes. Overall a great marathon! Keep up the good work and a big THANK YOU to the race committee, Memphis’ finest, and especially, all the volunteers! This is a must-do marathon!!

Beautiful course

Water at every mile, toilets every mile, clocks at every mile; all that is great! The medal was terrible, but the cause is great. Good weather and good police support. Course was a little bit hilly but nothing too severe... but I did think it had more hills in the 2nd half than the race profile showed. With music having such an influence in Memphis, I would have thought they might have more bands along the course. This marathon should grow and I don't see why the Memphis Marathon can't become as large as Nashville - it's better!

This was my first St. Jude Marathon and hopefully will be my first of many. It's nice to have the start and finish close to one another, along with a scenic marathon course. Especially enjoyed finishing in AutoZone Park and the post-race food! If you want a nice, enjoyable marathon and can stand some quiet time with minimal fan support, I would certainly recommend this race. In addition, the cause makes it the biggest reason to do it.

Excellent experience, start to finish!

This was my first marathon and I couldn't have had a better experience. The course was good, aid stations excellent, only problem was that there was a bit too much traffic in some areas; the exhaust was a bit much. The volunteers were the best, one even handed me her cell phone at the end so I could 'phone home' with my time. I will be back!

Great cause for a first marathon

This was my first marathon and I am glad it was St Jude's. The goody bag was fun and the shirt is the nicest race shirt I have to date. The course was awesome the first 16 miles but the traffic the last 6 miles was crazy and made it hard to stay motivated. (Could have been tired legs that caused a lack of motivation.) The people along the way made it a great experience. I loved all the encouragement from spectators during those last trying miles. The finish in the park was cool and lastly, I loved the beer and soup.

This was my first full marathon and I am glad I chose this one. I enjoyed everything about this race. The volunteers were wonderful. Clocks at every mile was a very nice touch. The spectators were very plentiful in certain places. I really could have used a little more cheering between miles 18-22. Although, the spectators that were there were awesome. Pretty good course & half marathon

I ran the half marathon and did enjoy the course; very good for fast times. However I didn't appreciate a cop at one of the intersections after mile 11 stopping all the runners for a van to turn onto the street; I can understand an emergency vehicle but not a private vehicle. May influence my coming back again. Overall the race was well done except for that instance. Also a 'post-race party' was supposed to be on Beale St. but we never found it - it was more beer/food discounts in 3 resturants. I was looking for a more organized gathering.

This is a great course for fast times and was as well organized as any I've ever been in (24 marathons to date). I only did the half marathon, but I can say the 13 miles I did were so well staffed. Water every mile and plenty of pace clocks. Although slightly hillier that I expected, it wasn't too bad as I am used to running hills. I thought the finish at Autozone Park was awesome... it felt BIG! Everyone involved was so nice. great mid-size marathon

This was my 4th marathon, 1st in my hometown, and it was great, all the way up to the puny medal. PR'd and qualified for Boston, so everything else becomes somewhat irrelevant. Nonetheless, enjoyed the new course (double-loop eliminated). The finish at Autozone park is great, water/aid stations every mile well staffed, mile markers and times displayed each mile, fans are great, and missed the expo, so no comment.

Fantastic PR Marathon!

I have been running half marathons and other races for years. This race was very well organized. There were aid stations at every mile, and mile markers and times were clearly visible. The course is relatively flat, though there are a few rolling hills on the back half. Ending the race in the Autozone baseball stadium was pretty cool, and you could hear your name over the loudspeaker as you crossed the end. The crowds that were there were fantastic, but there were many places where crowd support was thin, esp. between miles 20 - 24 (when you really need it!). And there weren't nearly as many bands as I expected to see. Also, I strongly recommend staying in a hotel as close to Beale St. as possible. I found this was a great advantage race-day (plus, there's not much else to do in the other parts of town). Overall, great race, great organization, great fans (when there). I would definitely do this one again!

After Boston and Chicago this was my favorite.

I enjoyed the scenic course and the pre- and post-race events. The organization was great. Friendly volunteers, great traffic control by the Memphis Police Department, and well stocked aid stations. I enjoyed the entertainment during the marathon - especially the Elvis impersonator near the halfway point. I appreciated the GU at 9, 15 and 21. Potential to become a 5-star race

Such potential. This really could be a 5-star race if only a few changes were made. Some are: (1) Inform the media that a race is taking place (3 days - no news). (2) Take a lesson from Nashville. Have some bands and encourage some community involvement (like high school cheerleaders). (4) No American flag at start. (5) No gun start ('Ready... GO'). (6) Better traffic control - I was almost hit by a car (no joke). (7) Marathon medal - add some weight to it. Flimsy. (8) How about a pre-race pasta dinner? No feeling of race community established. (9) Have diffent color ribbins for 1/2 and full marathon (like most combined races). Great things about the marathon!!!! (1) GREAT CAUSE - ST. JUDE CHILDREN. (2) Aid station volunteers. (3) Great finish location at a baseball stadium. (5) Great refreshments - good spirit - very generous. (4) Hang out at Beale Street post-race. (5) One of the best marathon t-shirts I have.

Great Organization!

From the start to the finish, the race organization was super (in my limited experience). The speaker system at the start allowed announcements to be heard from blocks away. Miles were well marked and each mile post had a race clock. Water/aid stations were at each mile post. Water was in white cups at the front, Powerade in the red cups at the rear. Course was well monitored, traffic control was good, course volunteers and workers were friendly. Finish at the ballpark allowed for reunion with family and friends while still being able to cheer other runners in. Finish area was well laid out with great support from volunteers.

It's a great race -- excellent volunteers

The organizers seemingly are willing to listen and make changes for the better. The course this year was well thought-out and flowed nicely. I really like the fact that there are water stops at virtually every mile. I've run at Chicago, Louisville, and Quad Cities marathons, and yours is the only one with stops at every mile. Your volunteers are very courteous and helpful too. I really was pleased to see the expo moved this year to a more spacious venue. The finish at Autozone Park is awesome -- the fact that showers are available is icing on the cake. Your website is good too -- I appreciated all the time split data you had posted by the day after the race. My one suggestion for you is to attempt to grow your race at a measured pace. I know it is for a wonderful cause and growth is desired, but please try to grow it at a rate you can manage. Chicago's race, for instance, is completely out of control; it's a virtual cattle drive the entire way. You have a wonderful event going -- please take great care in how you manage it!

Your heart will forever be changed!

This marathon completely exceeded my expectations. This is the first marathon I have run where everyone thanked me for running the race and supporting St. Jude's. You run through gorgeous neighborhoods that you would not see during your average trip to Memphis. The water stops at every mile (with potties!) are excellent and all the volunteers were high energy (and even gave us a donut!). The post-race food is more than enough - pizza, bananas, cookies, oranges, soup, beer. This is the first marathon I've done (and I did 13 before Memphis) where I felt my tired little legs helped St. Jude's take care of their adorable patients. It's a great pre-Christmas marathon - your heart will forever be changed.

restaurants not ready for so many pasta-eaters

The restaurants do not anticipate the large number of pasta-eaters that the St. Jude draws. Runners do not eat a lot of ribs, steaks or catfish, at least not the night before the race. I have run in the half marathon twice.

great course, amazing organization, POOR medal!!

The course couldn't have been improved on. It rocked. This was my first time ever in memphis. OK, I would have loved to see Graceland... The organization was top-shelf. Everything you could want was there. Water every mile (like clockwork). It was great. My biggest complaint is the medal... it was a total joke. I have never seen a medal for a marathon so small and thin. Seriously... I would recommend the race, but be forwarned, the finisher's medal was a total letdown and joke... for 26 miles you deserve better.

Where was the music?!?!?

I heard maybe three, four bands at the most. And those I heard were all rock bands and one Elvis impersonator... where was the jazz and/or blues? Country? I also realize you can't force spectators to come out and cheer but it was Q-U-I-E-T!! This made for a boring run. Speeding cars (especially along E. and N. Parkways) were an issue. One police officer yelled, 'slow down' to a car and runners around me applauded. My wife and I also found walking to and from our hotel on Main Street to Beale Street very unsettling... we were followed and approached several times by shady characters. Again, not the race staff's fault, but something to think about if you plan to hang around in the evenings. We saw police officers in various areas, but these 'suspect characters' seemed to know exactly where to go, too. Lastly, the lack of variety among expo exhibitors and the overall number was disappointing. Granted, I'm used to Los Angeles, San Diego and Long Beach. All of that being said, you'll never meet nicer volunteers -- southern hospitality at its best. And let's not forget about the cause. For that alone, I'd come back in a heartbeat.

Best Marathon to Date

I am not an experienced marathoner (only 4 so far) but the St. Jude's Marathon is tops in my book. It does not have the bands that the PF Changs, Country Music or Suzuki Rock and Roll had, but there were plenty of spectators and entertainment along the way. Yes, doing loops can get boring but, there is not that much in the way of scenery in Memphis. I thought the volunteers did an excellent job and finishing in Autozone Park was a nice touch. Also, the food/drinks at the end were great. Plus, St. Jude's is one of the greatest charities in the US. Every dollar donated to this race is worth it. Look forward to making this marathon an annual event.

Great crowds, solid expo, no pasta party

This was my 4th marathon and in general I really enjoyed the run and experience. Positives: the crowds along the course, with music at about 4 locations was great! They also provided GU stations from mile 10-24, which was also great. And the scenery was ok as well. Only real drawback was the course was not quite the same as on the web. Many more rolling inclines with elevation changes that I did not anticipate. So the course is a little more difficult than advertised. The charity is an awesome bonus. Only other problem was no pasta party and the restaurants in downtown Memphis were NOT prepared for so many runners. Top to bottom a solid 4 out of 5. -epm

My first marathon and it was a great experience

This was my first marathon, and I thought the entire experience was great. The support along the route was fantastic and much more frequent than what I expected. Finishing along the first base line at the baseball stadium was a very nice touch. The post-event on Beale Street was a blast. I have many great memories from this run and the entire weekend and plan to run this race again in 2004.

Great Marathon - Fun Course

My 4th marathon (Chicago/San Diego/Twin Cities) and this was as good an experience as the previous three. Nice people, nice goodie bag. Great course (sort of a double-loop, but you only retrace 4-5 miles). Some rolling hills but none too long or too steep (more than Chicago but less than SD or Twin Cities). Good entertainment along the way. Sparse spectator support in places but enthusiastic and plentiful aid stations. Great hotels within walking distance of start and finish. Nice weather. Running on the field of the Liberty Bowl (Mile 21) and entering Autozone Park through the center field fence to finish were great. I would highly recommend this marathon.

Awesome Marathon -- Memphis Rocks!

This marathon is one you must add on your list 'to do'. It is very well organized and for a very worthy cause. St. Jude's Research Hospital is on the course and as I ran by I prayed for every patient that has ever entered or will enter the hospital, for every patient's family and for every physician, nurse and medical personnel who administers to these critically ill patients. All the while, giving thanks to God for my healthy body and ability to run! The course was awesome, beginning with running along the riverfront, to running through the park, into Mid-South Coliseum while the band was playing, and I LOVED finishing inside Auto Zone Stadium. This was marathon number 12 for me and I definitely will return to this one. Thanks to all the volunteers and especially to Memphis' finest police department for keeping the course open.

Great crowds - great cause

The course is a little deceiving with the semi-double loop but this made the spectators more accessable. The support on the course was excellent with mile splits and water stops. There are more hills (overpasses/underpasses) than the elevation chart would lead you to believe.

Great Half-Marathon

As stated above, I ran the half-marathon, and it was a wonderful experience! The crowds were somewhat sparse outside the downtown area, but were quite enthusiastic and certainly kept me going at times. The aid stations were plentiful and the volunteers were very friendly. It's likely I'll be back in 2004 to make this event my first full marathon. And to top it all off, it benefits a wonderful organization! Cheers to Memphis.

Great marathon

I enjoyed the marathon and Memphis. High points include: Traffic control, well stocked and staffed aid stations, and central location of hotels, expo, start, and finish. The uplifting song and dance numbers you pass twice in the park, running through the stadium and the finish at the ball park that allowed for friends and family to have a clear view of the finish (they even called out your name as you enter) were simply outstanding. A very positive experience!

Great, well organized, Saturday marathon

Great course through the heart of downtown Memphis. Starting at 8:00 am I thought traffic control would be a problem by the time I finished. But no! The Memphis Police controlled the route so very, very well. The volunteers were awesome! The water stops were located almost every mile and were all well staffed. Course marshalls held signs at all turns (this is in addition to police traffic control) and there was a manned timer at every mile. The course took in all the major downtown sites. Running on the field through the Liberty Bowl was a nice touch. When you run marathons at my speed (4:47), it's the little extras that make them special and Memphis had all the extras.

Great race in Memphis

My wife and I wanted to run another marathon in 2003 but were having trouble finding one near Wisconsin this late in the year so we decided to head south to Memphis. While some southerners were complaining slightly about it being cold (in the 40s) we thought it was perfect running weather. This appears to be a pretty average temp for the time of year. The course takes you by, or through, pretty much everything noteworthy in Memphis - Beale Street, the national Civil Rights Museum, The Pyramid, Sun Records, the zoo, Mississippi River, Liberty Bowl, Autozone Park, etc., etc. It does a great job of showcasing the city. The only Memphis landmark it misses is Graceland, but only because it is not located that close to town. The aid stations and time clocks appeared about every mile which was very nice. The aid station by the zoo has to be the most energetic aid station I have ever encountered. Plus you get the added bonus of going by it twice. The rolling hills near the end were a bit unwelcome but I have to remember people do not run marathons because they are easy. The post-race food consists of the usual: bagels, oranges, bananas, etc., but also includes pizza, beer and Krispy Kreme donuts. All in all a great event.

Best supported race I have run

Although the course covered some of the same ground, it was generally interesting with enough activity around me to take my mind off the running. There was a water/Powerade stop every mile. This allowed me to take water on my schedule more than the races. I enjoyed the run through the Liberty Bowl and into Autozone Park. There were fans scattered along the course although it got lonely after the half-marathoners broke off.

Memphis is a good place to start running

I ran the half marathon. Very well organized. The course was well set up and while some thought quite hilly, I would say it was as described, rolling hills, none that steep. Autozone Park is awesome and having the nearby hotels makes traveling from outside of the city of Memphis very easy. The fans were clumped in certain spots, and for the most part were loud and supportive. The bands playing were a nice touch. Good organization. Well run. Average expo. Great start and finish.

Great marathon

Being my 16th marathon this year, I have a fresh memory for comparison to others... this one is a definite must do. One I will consider again in the future. The temperature was cool, and it was a bit windy in a few places, but the sun was out and the course was beautiful. The Autozone Park was a perfect venue with plenty of room for the packet pickup, restrooms and showers. The double-loop was not bad, as it was not exactly the same both times, nor were the hills that bad. In fact I can't think of anything negative about this entire event. Congratulations to the race director, planners, volunteers and city of Memphis.

I ran the half, so I can only comment on the first loop of the course. I thought this was great fun - the course was well laid out and challenging. I was completely impressed with the organizational support including outstanding traffic control from the local police. Finishing at AutoZone Park - their minor league baseball stadium - was a great location to wrap up a great event. I definitely plan to run this again.

Scenic marathon with a lot of potential

This was my first marathon and I enjoyed the layout and getting to pass through some of the more historic sights in Memphis. Perhaps I missed the fruit and cookies at the later aid stations, but I never saw any and was really needing it by mile 21. The later part of the marathon is run on roads that are moderately too severely sloped, which was tough on my feet and calves. Crowd support was sparse outside of Beale, Autozone Park and Overton Park, but those who were out there were very spirited. All in all, I was very pleased with the marathon as a whole and the proceeds all go to a great cause, which makes it even more worthwhile.

Set a PR here!

I thought overall this marathon is well worth running. Very well organized packet pickup and expo with enthusiastic crowd support. Several hotels located near the start/finish line areas made it easy getting to and from the race and expo. The course was hillier than I expected, but the cool temps (38 degrees) helped out - although the wind was a factor somewhat that day. I didn't qualify for Boston here, but set a PR and felt great. Excellent traffic control throughout the race. I didn't mind the double-loop course but the rolling hills in the last few miles were a definite challenge. Finishing in the Autozone park with friends and family cheering me on was a definite plus. I will be back! (as Arnold would say).

Great race for a great cause

This was a topnotch marathon. The course was not too hilly (however did not match elevation chart), the day was great, and the spectators probably more spirited than any marathon I have done. The only complaint was not a long enough finish line - stopping immediately to take off the chip was tough. Maybe strech it out a bit. Overall, great job!!

Good overall experience

This was just my second marathon after Chicago in '02. Overall, I thought the marathon was a good experience. It was my first to do a double-loop course, so that was a little challenging. I would have liked the second loop to be more different than the first. There are a number of hotels that are just 2-3 blocks from the start/finish. My family was able to see my twice before the finish by only walking a couple blocks! The finish in the baseball park is great. It allows the crowd to actually see the runners coming in. Also, running through the Liberty Bowls was neat too. The crowd is scarce in a couple places, but all are very encouraging. I was told about the rolling hills beforehand but it seemed a little more hilly than expected. Overall, a good experience for my 1st smaller marathon. Would recommend it, but expect a few rolling hills throughout.

First-Timer

Never ran a half marathon before and was not able to train properly due to knee problems. Still able to do the half marathon in under 3 hours. A lot of downhill the first 6 miles. A lot of up hill the last 7.1 but because the first half was so smooth I was able to jog most of it and come out with a pretty good time. The race starts out along the Mississippi River, which is beautiful, and the finish at Autozone Park made me feel like an olympian. They announced you by name and gave you a finisher's medal. My goodie bag and free hat cost almost as much as my fee to enter. Very organized. Supporters were great. Good experience!

A somewhat cold mid-winter run, but worth it!

Lining up by the Pyramid, I went up to the front for a mile of blazing glory, then settled down to the middle of the pack. The course I ran took us past Graceland and a good photo opportunity for a picture in front of Ole Elvis' pad. The coldness of December kept you going along the banks of the mighty Mississippi River, great finish inside the Pyramid - venue of the Lewis-Tyson fight, a knock-out.

Enjoyable experience

This was a very memorable experience for my first marathon, as I travelled from Nova Scotia to run it. The # of participants was great - enough to feel you were in a crowd, but not too many to crowd you out. The spectators, while small in number, were very enthusiastic. The only complaint I had was my certificate had the clock time instead of the chip time. As a first-timer, I would have liked for my certificate to show under 4 hours, instead of the clock time (4:00:09).

Great Comeback

I watched my husband run the last 1st tennessee sponsored marathon in 2000. I was miserable driving the course, much less running it. The st. jude version is top notch. the addition of the half marathon really increased the numbers. the expo & utilization of auto zone park was wonderful. I hope one day the course will take our visitors through more of the historic midtown areas instead of a double dose of north parkway. Also - i would have purchased a logo jacket if it were available.

I'd run this one again

I thought the course was well marked. Enjoyed running by several of Memphis's Landmarks. The run through the Liberty Bowl was fun. (I was ready for the photgrapher there with a smile)The crowd offering support was not large, but those who were there along the course were very supportive. The finish in Autozone Park was really great too. I saw 4 Elvis's and raised money for the Children's Hospital, which made the 26.2 well worth it! Thanks also to the police, firefighters and everyone at the water stations for all their support too!

Great org. but definitely not flat!

This was my second marathon (having done an earlier incarnation of the same in '97). Much better finish, better organized -- but hey organizers! -- you can be upfront with the rolling hills especially after mile 20. I drove the course the previous day so I was prepared, but just felt sorry for those who looked at the elevation chart and were elated. Overall, I enjoyed running for a great cause (raised over $700 in just 2 weeks)-- the kids are the heroes. Just a few words on course support: Memphis' best were out in strength -- I did take the time to shake a few hands and thank them for their heroic and thankless job. I feel we don't appreciate our police and firefighters enough -- they were cheering the runners, and I just felt I didn't deserve it and I should have been cheering them ... 10-4.

Good race, great organization

I had a great time at this race and posted my best time of the year on what was mostly a pretty flat and relatively gentle course. The early going was a tad tight on some of the streets, and there were definite road hazards in a few places. Otherwise there was plenty of room to run. Support was more than adequate, and the fan support where there was fan support was good. The people running it seemed quite efficient, and the Memphis folks in general were gracious hosts. When I get a chance, I'll come back.

Overall Good Marathon

This race was very well organized and had plenty of well stocked aid stations. Good traffic control and pretty good spectator support, especially in the first half. I really liked the start and finish lines being so close together and the location of them were great with so many hotels nearby. The weather was a little on the cool side but I should have expected that in December. What I didn't expect were the numerous rolling hills in the last 3 or 4 miles. After looking at the elevation chart before the race I knew there would be rolling hills throughout the course, but the chart doesn't show many hills in the end. I will be ready for them next time, as I anticipate doing this one again. Overall I enjoyed this race and I hope lots of money was raised for St. Judes hospital.

Runner from Memphis

This was my first marathon and I thought the organization and the aid stations were just great. I thought the course was just ok, the second loop of the marathon was not all that pleasant. The last 4 miles had 'rolling hills', a bit steeper then rolling if you ask me, especially for the last 4.3 miles of a marathon. Finishing in Auto Zone Park was very cool though. Overall a good first marathon experience. I would run this one again, knowing those hills are coming at the end!

Exemplary for the size!

After a year’s absence, the Memphis Marathon came back stronger and better on the invigoratingly crisp morning of Saturday, December 7, 2002, thanks to the new major sponsorship by St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Given what I’ve heard of the previous course, and my own experience today, I’d say it’s made a remarkable recovery and it has an excellent prognosis for coming years. Chilly air, clear skies. Wheelchair and hand cycle competitors set out at 7:45 a.m. Fifteen minutes later some 2900 runners (full and newly added half marathon combined) took to the course. We passed the Gibson Guitar Factory, made our way over to Riverside Drive along the Missississippippissipy River, and got a good view of Mud Island before we grunted up a short but serious hill on Beale Street. I stopped to photo the Elvis statue,<i> thankyuh, thankyuhverymuch.</i> Then we passed through one block of the street’s many little clubs and bars, a centerpiece of Memphis’ musical nightlife. The crowd had thinned out as I headed through downtown and met a reincarnated Elvis cheering us. In this section we found more of the typically gently rolling hills that typify the course. We passed directly in front of The Pyramid and turned right to begin an almost four mile mostly straight stretch east on North Parkway. Mile 7 took us along the Zoo’s north border until we turned into Overton Park and got a little boost from live music by Greased Lightening<i> [sic]. </i>This aid station offered the usual water and Powerade, plus plenty of Gu packets (and all this would remain available when I pass it again as mile 17). The park led us through the Memphis College of Art, Museum, and other fine arts buildings. While I made my way down Poplar, hand cyclist Terry Blackwell crossed the AutoZone Park finish line in 2:12:55. Jonas Holdeman ran in for his winning time of 2:34:47. (Later I would learn that the final two miles down Union posed problems for the faster runners as they had to negotiate their run through the congested crowd of half-marathoners and first-loop marathoners. My only suggestion for course improvement: address this very significant problem.) Headed down Union the reincarnated Elvis I’d met downtown provided a magnificently cheesy photo op in front of the legendary Sun Studios. I passed the finish area and began my second loop. Had I reached this point maybe four minutes later, I’d have seen Russia’s Tatiana Maslova zip past me on her way to take the women’s first place in 2:46:38. This fall’s marathons have proved profitable for her: with October’s Mystic Places in Connecticut, and Philadelphia just 13 days ago, this made her third victory in two months. I turned up Third Street and my back-of-the-pack status became evident. The race crowd had drastically thinned as I began a five mile stretch of déjà vu. Meanwhile, Jerry Forde won the wheelchair category in 3:42:59. As I made my second trip through Overton Park, I had to stop to deal with some problems related to my prosthetic leg. Doing so ate up probably four or five minutes of my ample time reserve, but neglecting this would cause more serious problems later. I found at the mile 20 ChampionChip checkpoint that I had to pick up my pace in order to make the time I wanted. I turned in toward the Mid-South Coliseum and then to the Liberty Bowl. Surprise: the course led directly into the stadium, along the sidelines, where I got a high-five and cheers from both a Memphis University football player and some sort of mascot. A funky little feature, very much appreciated at this fatigue-prone stage. Continuing up Hollywood Street and turning left down Union, I regained my pace. Growing confident that I could sustain what I’d done since mile 20, so I’d certainly make my 5:50 goal, I began to speculate: how about 5:45? I pushed ahead into the series of loooong ups and downs, including another Elvis offering donuts for the final 2.5 miles, until I turned right for a little sprint to the final entrance ramp into AutoZone Park. According to my personal chronometer, started when I crossed the start line, I finished in 5:45:20—my best since Cape Cod, five years ago (5:42). Finishing in the park allowed access to the team showers. I even had the pleasure of a ten minute massage. Then I checked out the post-race food. Powerade, water, bananas, apples, blah blah blah—and—<b>Krispy Kremes! </b>The south’s most delectable deep-fried decadence in carbo-reloading. Ohh, <i>baaaby…</i> Apart from the one concern of front runners crowded in the final two miles on Union, I found this event exemplary for a mid-size event. It offers a well-designed course that provides moderately varying terrain and a decent view of some the city’s most popular attractions and resources. Further, it provides a well-supplied goodie bag; nice hotels near the start/finish; and smooth execution with the starts, course management and support, finish line, and post-race facilities, services, and refreshments—ample even without the (God bless 'em) Krispy Kremes . The St. Jude Memphis Marathon benefits from one more vital resource beyond the responsibilities and the control of the race production team: the fine people of Memphis. Though not many spectators lined the course (I’d give this a 1), most of those who did come out gave generous support and applause (worth a 5—hence my averaged rating of 3 stars for crowds). Memphis impresses me as exuding an honest sense of <i>welcome.</i>

Top-notch overall appeal

This was a very well run event in general. The streets were a little tight at the beginning, and there was a good bit of camber on another stretch. The crowd support was small but exceptional. The water and poweraide stations were well stocked and plentiful - almost every mile. The run through the Liberty Bowl was tough at 20 miles, but it was a neat experience. The finish in the minor league stadium was first class. Southern hospitality was at its best. I will return.

A great race, hats off to St. Judes

The weather was great for a race. 26 degrees at the start and 44 at the finish. Water stations every mile were well manned with enthusiastic volunteers. Great fan support during the first half of the race but dwindled for the second loop. The race volunteers made up for the lack of support. Scenery made running the course enjoyable. Roads were banked causing some leg fatigue especially in the last 4 miles. The finish at AutoZone Park allowed for fans to sit and watch the runners cross the finish line. Police and race course support was outstanding especially at the two major intersections where the runners had to cross the intersection on a diagonal.

as a Memphian, I'd rate it as good as it gets

Perfect weather, perfect course (for Memphis), the most fun I've had running in a while. One problem: My ankle is just killing me after running on the seriously angled road. Course passes everything worth seeing in downtown Memphis, and before you'd get to tired to care where you are running. Perfectly organized. This race is going to grow much larger. I have heard no negative comments from fellow runners.

Great weather - nice course

This was my 3rd marathon this year. The most difficult part was running by the finish for the half knowing I still had 13.1 miles to go. The crowd was supportive at the right times and got me to the finish a little faster than my Twin Cities Marathon time. I also really liked staying at a hotel between the start and finish, that made it easy to be dressed right and rest at the end!

Difficult Course; Great Organization

First, the good: Great organization, from the expo/package pickup to the plentiful and well-stocked water stations. Course was well marked, and well staffed. Elvis handing out doughnuts was cool, running on the field at the Liberty Bowl was fun, and the finish at Auto Zone Park was probably the best of the nine marathons I've done. The Bad: The majority of the roads were very strongly cambered, making most of the run uncomfortable and awkward. There was very heavy vehicle traffic during much of the race (the runners had only one lane of four blocked, eg. Union Avenue). The Ugly: Memphis - home of the blues, yet there was only one band on the entire course. Memphis - home of Elvis, yet there was absolutely no music of any kind at the start. Note to race director, Elvis has a new greatest hits cd out - buy it, and play a song or two as the runners are standing in the freezing cold waiting to run 26.2 miles. Even the race t-shirts featured a guitar and musical notes.........yet none were found on the course!

Memphis can be proud!

This was a top-notch marathon. The overly-generous prize and random drawing money should have drawn more runners. The course was mildly rolling and displayed Memphis nicely. The organizers thought of little things too, like a specially made plywood insert to cross a construction ditch in the road. The crowd support was very nice downtown, considering the cold temperature (for them). The packet pickup could be been smoother instead of bouncing you between hotel suites. The finish at AutoZone Park was a nice touch. And what about the singer of the National Anthem?! Outstanding! Excellent marathon!

Great job this year!

This was my first Memphis marathon, but by all accounts it is so much better than the last one. Course is great, abundant water stations (almost every mile), lots of volunteers. I only ran the half but loved it b/c about 5 mi. of the course covered my old favorite run in midtown. This race felt like it was a good size - i liked it much better than being out there with 20,000 people. They did a great job this year and worked really hard and I hope that one day we'll make it a big one. I am happy I chose to support St. Jude and this race, and I'm glad so many other people did too. The finish in Redbird Stadium is awesome, and people on the marathon course said one of the highlights was running through Liberty Bowl Stadium around the 20-mi mark.

nice southern hospitality!

I drove to Memphis after deciding to run the race only 2 days before. The prerace registration was well organized. It was great to park in the adjacent garage next to the finish and close to the start! The race itself was extremely well organized. There were a LOT of water stops (all with porta potties), and certainly adequate amounts of powerade, water, and gel. The people at the water stops were also very encouraging!! A nice route, flat, and a nice tour of Memphis. I highly recommend this race. Its also a nice small city to get around, and inexpensive, great food and fun!!! Thanks to the 'random cheering girls' who kept showing up at various points along the way to cheer on the slow runners!! A nice touch to run through the Liberty Bowl stadium and finish in AutoZone park. I'll be back!!

a great first time half marathon experience

i have nothing to compare as this was my first half marathon, but i will say this: 1) the people were so very friendly! 2) the aid stations were great! 3)the route was ok-a little boring during the warehouse district, but then great. 4) flat for memphis is hilly for people from nw oh - course descriptions need to be worded in such a way that people from all over will have a better idea 5) the steeply cantered roads were awful. no other way to put it - they were like running along the side of a hill. 6) having said all that, i'll be happy to return next year!!!

Awesome city, course and yeah, the race was neat t

We went as a group of seven, some with spouses, kids and friends. The pasta dinner was nothing to write home about, but that was the only glitch we saw, and at five dollars a pop, not much to complain about. Every other detail was well planned and organized.... one of our group somehow missed getting his finisher's medal but did come in at an extremely busy point, so really, no big deal. What a great city full of wonderful friendly and very hospitable people. I can't wait to do it again!

The new Memphis marathon was a great event.

I ran Memphis in '94 and '95 and this is the best course so far. The organization and traffic control were excellent. Perfect weather and enthusiastic volunteers were also a great asset. I liked the pasta party with its multiple eating stations. The photo with Elvis was a nice touch too. I was pleased to be running a marathon for St. Jude Hospital, and I think that many of my fellow runners felt the same way.

Very good race

I ran the half this year, but the weather was great (sunny and 29 at the start) and the course really looked good. Just enough hills to keep it interesting and some long downhills to stride out on. If I were running the full, I'd rather not do a loop.

Great job St. Jude

This was my 3rd marathon...first 2 being in Chicago & I was very impressed with the organization of this race. This course consisted of rolling hills that took us along the Mississippi, along the zoo & park, through the football stadium & finished in a baseball stadium. Elvis was even available at the half-way mark for pictures. Crowd support was good and there were aid stations at every mile. My only complaint was the pre-race pasta party which took place at a mall where we had to go from table to table for a thimble-full of various pastas (with sauces). Seating was a problem since no tables were set up. I'd say 'skip' this part & find your own relaxing meal. All in all, it was a very positive experience.

Just So.. So.. Marathon

Very narrow roads for the 1st few miles along with dodging construction barrels, etc. Also, 1st several water stops were only about one or two small tables long, had to wait for water. A great job on the number of water stops however. Many, many miles of 'banked' roads. Well organized race, awful course with nice sites. Would not return.

very well organized!

This was marathon number six for me. I've run both larger and smaller marathons, Memphis was very well organized and put together. They had an abundance of water stations (every mile), power gels available and Vaseline. The course was very well marked and each mile marker was clearly visible. Nice finish in Autozone Park. There was even beer available for the finishers! The course was pretty through the zoo, along the river and near some historic landmarks. At one part in the race I lost a mitten, a lady at the water stop found it and drove alongside the course until she found me and gave it to me. I had my power gel in it and was very glad to have it back! There were not many fans, but those that were there were enthusiastic. The traffic was well controlled for the runners. I was impressed, Memphis, and I will be back!

A great marathon in Memphis

I have had the pleasure of running the Memphis Marathon on 4 courses now and this is by far the best. The people did a great job on the marathon this year and we got a great tour of downtown Memphis.

Half marathon ...

OK, I just had a fairly long entry but I lost it, so if you have any questions, email me. -- Volunteers were GREAT. Helpful, plentiful, many aid stations. Even one fireman standing in front of a small 3-4 inch sheet of ice on the road so we wouldn't hit it. It's something minor and easily overlooked, but that just shows how helpful they were. Even the 10 and 11 year old kids knew their role well throughout the race and at the finish. --Course was pretty good. Again, I only ran the half marathon, so there were about 7 miles that I didn't see. But being from the city itself and looking at the map, the miles I didn't run look pretty interesting (mostly in Midtown Memphis, known as the quirky part of town, but mostly fairly scenic IMO). I LOVED THE FINISH! (which was the same for the full and half marathoners). It was in Autozone Park new and beautiful baseball field), where you can see the runners enter the park and finish the final .2 (or, in my case, .1) miles of their race/run. And the fans sit in the stands. I've heard that in previous years runners finished in the Pyramid, but this was better than that could've ever been. After finishing, you can eat/stretch/shower/get a massage (and the massaage stations looked plentiful) in the nice locker rooms of the baseball team and use the 'lockers' (but they were nicer than lockers) of the baseball players themselves. And the atmosphere was great. The fans can see you enter the park and cheer you on as you finsih. And when you enter the nice basbeball field on the last leg of your run, there's a sign on the big screen saying 'welcome, runners!' I'd definitely run it next year, and IT'S FOR A GREAT CAUSE (St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, without a doubt the BEST cancer/leukemia research center in the world. They do wonders for kids and their families who have these types of terminal illnesses).

Old course was the pits....but,

The new course should be a favorite with runners. Very scenic, flat to softly rolling. New half marathon. The finish is in Autozone Park baseball stadium.

Look forward to the change

I ran this race in 2000. It was fun to run to Graceland (although there was no 'Elvis' there) but not worth the ugly stretch just before and the hills afterwards. The new course looks much more enjoyable although I did like the old finish inside the Pyramid. A good place to run a marathon in December.

Great race all the way around Memphis

I have really enjoyed this marathon for many years. The course is great if on some questionable parts of town. The finish is fantastic at the Pyramid. BUT the race is cancelled for 2001! I hope it will be back next year and they promise it will.

Elvis has not left the building!!

I really had a good time. The 'rolling' hills kept it interesting. Running on the expressway was also a first for me. Overall-I had a great time. The finish line accomadations were wonderful!

First 3M, Last 3M great...middle 20...

Having ran the 2000 version, I can say it was very well organized (you can even stay inside the Pyramid to keep warm on a cold day, like this year). The course itself is rolling, moreso than expected, and with the exception of the first 3 mile and the last 3 miles along the Mississippi, is pretty boring. Graceland was interesting, though. Good for a weekend getaway, but I don't think I'd do it again.

Graceland

I really liked passing Graceland. You can even veer off the course to have your picture taken with an Elvis.

Good Race

An excellently organized race. Course is moderately rolling and passes through some rough areas of town. The last mile along the river and finish inside the Pyramid Arena is spectacular.
