Beautiful Community Race
This was marathon 101 for me and 99 for my friend. We made the easy 4 hour drive from the Twin Cities. Packet pick up was a breeze. We stayed at the Doubletree in downtown Neenah - Bus to the Start was right in front of the hotel and just a few blocks walk from the Finish line. They even gave runners a 2pm check out. The race is very well organized! Tons of biffy's at the start and along the course. Volunteers and police at every intersection and turn. The spectators were amazing on this HOT day offering us water, bags of ice, misting us with their hoses and cheering like crazy. Great community support! Nice shirt and medal. Nice race App to download with all the information. Good email communications. Beautiful finish area with lots of snacks and goodies. My only complaint is the amount of concrete - ouch! Highly recommend!

Fantastic and very well organized Marathon!
Thanks to the Race Director, the medical staff, the volunteers, and all the spectators for a fantastic marathon in hot running conditions. Loved the amount of aid stations, the extra water on the course, the popsicles, the GU's, and the fruit. Amazing is how many residents had put out sprinklers and had provided extra water along the course. My 10th time completing this year. Fantastic marathon if you need Wisconsin for your 50 state goal, or to marathon and I will be back again next run your first marathon.

Awesome people, monotonous course
The Fox Cities Marathon is a nice, smaller marathon that truly showcases the communitys support for the event. The race was very well- organized, packet pickup at the college was easy, and parking downtown for the shuttle busses to the start line was no problem at all. (I also really appreciated that we were able to wait for the race to start indoors.) Unfortunately, I found the course to be pretty boring. The majority of the marathon is run through subdivisions and it got monotonous very quickly. 2016 was also a warm year, and there is very little shade available. Overall, this was not a super- hilly course, but I wouldnt call it flat or fast either. For a small- town marathon, I did feel that there was a good amount of crowd support which was very much appreciated. The aid stations were plentiful and well- manned, and there were lots of organized cheering sections. The highlight of my race was our fantastic 3:35 pace leader, John, and the super- nice people in our pace group. I ended up talking to them for the first 20 miles or so, which really helped keep things interesting. The finish at Riverside Park was great: lots of food and drink and a lovely setting to relax after the run. I really appreciate the work that went into this event, I just didnt enjoy the course as much as other races I have run.

Excellent choice for WI
I'm pursuing a marathon in all 50 states. This was my 37th marathon and 34th state. It was an excellent choice for Wisconsin! I'm glad I did it.
Pros:
-Excellent traffic control
Plenty of aid stations and EVERY SINGLE station had the same order of fluid (water vs. Gatorade). This a small but important detail.
-Supportive of slower participants
-Great expo where you were able to record a short video greeting to be shown on their Facebook page
app for my smartphone was very handy, and all of the communication was excellent
-Great hospitality by UWFox Valley at the start and at the expo
-Loved the cheerleaders!!
-Beautifully scenic course. Loved the pedestrian bridge!
-Excellent finish area; very pretty
-Finish chute was closed off to spectators which was great so no one to get in the way as you finish
Areas for improvement:
-No Arby's sandwiches left for the 4+ hour marathon finishers
-Congestion getting to the start area, even for the shuttle buses
-First couple of miles are a little congested until the half marathoners break off (and the motorcycles that were supporting us gave off awful fumes)
Overall, my complaints are minor. This was an excellent marathon that I highly recommend. I'm really glad I chose it for my Wisconsin marathon. The course was not too challenging and I loved all of the turns. (Side note: I rented a house via Airbnb in Menasha that was close to both the start and the finish.) Thanks to the Fox Cities for their hospitality!

A Nice Fall Event
This was my third marathon in another state. Was there for work so decided that I would go ahead and register for the marathon. My race didn't really go as planned, but that was not the fault of the race management. Very well marked with cones, signs and people. Plenty of support (Gu, water, Gatorade). The medal was nice and there were still people at the finish line despite my slow time. Packet pick-up was easy and the bus shuttle service was easy to navigate!

Great Course, Great Weather, too
This marathon was the 25th! It started at the UW Fox Valley campus in Menasha, and ended at Riverside Park in Neenah. There was an expo the day before the race, and they were giving stuff away. Of course, some were selling their wares, trying to make a buck. Coming into the facility at the university, first they give you your number. Then you pick up your bib and safety pins. Then you can go to the expo. There, you can check that your chip, on the back of your bib, works. You get a bag of stuff lots of it advertising of area businesses that out-of-town folks generally find as worthless. The 50 States Marathon Club was having a reunion run here, so they were on-site (and they had a meeting later in the afternoon).
Race day morning, you could park at or near the university (and get a shuttle ride back after the race) or park in Neenah, before the start, and then ride a bus to the start-line. At the start line, you were corralled by your expected finish time. For me, it took 2 minutes from the sound of the gun, until I crossed the start-line mat. All of that time, I was walking. There were just that many people. I only heard approximate numbers in the thousands - but there were lots of runners most of them half-marathoners. The whole group was together for about the first two miles.
The marathoners stayed on Midway Road for the first 3.5 miles. Out of the city by then, we turned north and meandered through Darboy. Coming under a bridge to join the paved path along College Avenue, there were a group of cheer-leaders just making an incredible amount of noise. I looked around and was alone; they were cheering for me! It was remarkable and encouraging. After a spell on the CW Trail, we headed toward Combined Locks and Kimberly. After running behind the high school ball fields, the course kind of followed roads and trails along the river through Appleton and back to Menasha before crossing an old train bridge to Neenah, now converted for use by bikes and foot traffic. The last three miles or so were in Neenah, ending at Riverside Park.
There were several groups of cheer-leaders along the course (might have been a competition between the different groups, but I never heard). When passing them, it definitely lifted my spirit. There were two strategically placed aid stations, and all they did was hand out gel! Both were followed by a water station 100 yards down the path in case you needed water to wash it down. And speaking of water stations, there were lots of them. And they had refreshments and volunteers. It was spectacular to see.
The finish-line food was rather ordinary: Cut fruit and quartered bagels. They had a sheet cake too, and someone was handing out ginger snaps. The medal was nice, with a big 25 on it, and the finisher's T-shirt was rather plain - a big circle with the words Finisher, the name, and some sponsor names too. But still a nice T-shirt.
They really did a good job on this marathon event.

Excellent Marathon
I signed up for this marathon because of the weather forecast and previous reviews. Nice option to have a fee of 25 dollars to pick up your packet day of. This was another reason I signed up for this race. Very nice park and bus shuttles. Great informative website. The race event start was spectacular. Waited inside nice clean school with nice facilities. Race course, a little congested at start. Nice that there was an early split of half-full marathoners (mile 2). Pretty flat course but a couple of hills you need to be prepared for. Great course markings, wonderful feature of water and gatorade cups (white for water, green for gatorade). Excellent spectators (bands, cheerleaders, church groups, neighborhoods). Just mentally prepare yourself for half marathoners (walkers) finishing the last couple miles with you. We were never in each other's way. Nice medal, nice finish line, excellent race support, auto text for your loved ones to track you, nice shirt, great park to finish at, YMCA provided nice shower facilities. This Race Director is top notch! Once again, thanks for the packet pick-up option the day of the event!

Excellent Wisconsin Marathon
This marathon excels at getting everything right for the marathon. There were 22 aid stations on the course with porta-johns at each aid station. There were two GU stations as well as a fruit station. The new course is hiller than in years past with a few more turns, but a little more scenic with at times being closer to the water. The volunteers and spectators were fantastic and overall organization is fantastic. Plus this marathon gives back to the community which is great to see. A great overall Wisconsin marathon that you need to put on your marathon to do list.

Great Smaller Race
I hadn't run a Wisconsin race before and picked this one largely based on reviews on marathonguide. The Fox Cities Marathon exceeded my expectations on every level. The website was informative and the organizers sent out helpful emails. My wife used the mobile app and athlete tracker. Packet pick-up was easy to find, with plenty of parking, and the expo was larger and nicer than others I've been to for bigger races. Every volunteer I encountered was friendly. Even the law officers out on the course directing traffic were friendly and encouraging to the runners. The race start was well-organized, and they had a ton of water and aid stations out on the course. A surprising number of spectators showed up in the cold and rain to cheer us on. The finish area had lots of food and drinks, plus massages, which was nice. The course is pretty fast, mostly flat, fairly scenic. Comparable to courses like Twin Cities or Des Moines. Finishes in a beautiful park right on Lake Winnebago. This is a great, smaller, convenient race, and the organizers do a fantastic job. My sole complaint has to do with the people walking the half, who walk four across and do not pay attention to the runners. I don't see this as a fault of the organizers, though, just an unfortunate trend in races.

Best Mid Sized Road Marathon in Wisconsin!
I have done 37 total races marathon or longer. 6 of which have been this race. My title really says it all. Organization is great! Fans are great! Course is a good combination of country and city running. I just love this race! If youre a 50 stater and looking to do one in Wisconsin I recommend this one.

This was my first marathon and I'm so glad I picked one close to home and the Fox cities. Nice course, great fans, lots of water/gatorade stops, well organized. Expo was easy in and out.

The Good, the Bad, and the Doesn't fit.
I ran Fox Cities yesterday for the first time, here are my thoughts:
The course is great. Only a couple big hills I can remember, with a lot of flat (or almost flat) space in between. There were nice neighborhoods, downtown main streets, and cornfields. Last 1 mile is nice by the lake but by then I didn't care anymore. A nice mix of scenery.
Organization - couple of big gripes here. First - THE WALKERS MUST GO. Seriously, the people who walk on the course (they walk the 1/2 and walk the last 9 miles on the marathon course) walked 3 and 4 wide. They cut off the corners and make it a pain to navigate in spots. It was very frustrating to have to run around them in so many areas. Second, the 'long sleeve' shirts ALL had the same sleeve length - whether you got a L, XL, or XXL. They have appropriate body sizes but the EXACT same sleeve lengths. I wear Large but requested XL - still - the shirt is unwearable because it looks ridiculous with sleeves halfway up my forearms. Same issue with the other 3 guys in my group. I could live with a crappy medal because that's going in the drawer anyway, but give me a shirt that's good for more than a sweat-rag, please.
Beyond all that... I appreciated the above average # of aid stations. There were also many bands and dj's and cheerleaders on the course providing entertainment. One of the best things was the post-race massage area. Not all races have this. I told my masseuse Jill that she was the best thing to happen to me that day :) Band was there... but no beer :( oh well.
Spectators... It was a nice day and they were out there in force. Lots of folks in their front yards, which was nice.
Overall, I will not come here again to run a fast race unless the race directors ditch the walk - OR - train the walkers to walk 2 wide (max) on the outside.

Great Course and Very Well Run
This was my 7th marathon, and one of my favorites. The course is great and very flat (great for PRs). The organization is fantastic, with most streets closed off and water stops every 1-2 miles. There were a great number of spectators, DJs, and bands. The finish line is in a wonderful park. I highly recommend this race.

Very well organized race and great volunteers!
This was my 6th marathon and although it wasn't the fastest course I have run, it was the most fun. The spectators and volunteers were awesome!! I would love to run this one again.

Awesome event - incredibly well-organized!
While there are some larger races across the Country (Rock and Roll series, etc.), the Fox Cities event was the perfect size and extremely well-done. The information that was sent out ahead of time via Facebook and email was awesome - I always felt informed. The course was flat and had a lot of community support from start to finish. I will be running this event again and again!!

Course frusterations
I've ran this marathon the last 3 years and each year it's the same boring course. It's called the fox cities marathon for reason. This course should be done through the city, but instead it is drawn out through the countryside, which is a waste. Not organized and should have more stations. Mabey next year you should take my advice and re route it through the different fox cities.

Overall, a wonderful race!
I have run the Fox Cities half marathon in the past, but this was my first year running the full. I'm dissapointed that it took me so long to do so! It is a great course. Challening enough for experiened runners, yet also a great race for first timers. The volunteers were outstanding, and the crowd support is amazing. I'm so glad this race is in my hometown, as I will be returning for many years to come!

Great Marathon! Great Organization!
I was overwhelmed by how professional this event was planned and executed. The Fox Cities Marathon is the best race I've seen in a long time. They nailed it, and I will be back next year. I am very impressed!

Well organized race
I ran Fox Cities in 2000, but don´t remember anything about the race, except that I got a windbreaker (that I have never used. This years race was very well organized. I liked the cheering volunteers on the way, there was plenty of energy and food, the medal is beautiful and the shirt too. Thank you for a great race :)

Great place to do my first full!
I have done the half at Fox Cities twice and this year made it my first full! Had a great race finishing in 4:09! Plenty of water stations, excellent medic staff everywhere on the route, and community support from mile 1-26! A scenic route with few hills but nothing major! Had a great time! Thank you!

wonderful surprise - better than I'd even heard
I live in Wisconsin, heard this was a great race. I live only 2-ish hours away. My fifth marathon, and by FAR the best organized. Plentiful gatorade, water, gu, fruit, and portapotties very frequently. Spectators, volunteers and race organizers super-friendly! Showers offered post-race. Some beautiful houses to see, views along the lake too. Bands & DJs along the way. Will put this on my calendar for next year!

Better than many others.
Lots of local people pan this race (the course layout is generally cited as the reason), but I can wholeheartedly recommend the Fox Cities Marathon. Expo: check. Nice t-shirt: check. Goody bag: by far the best bag I've ever received - there was a CD Toy Story read-along book, coupons, Kimberly Clark products, a nice bag and a stainless steel canteen water bottle. Course: winds through many residential areas, so not the best, but it wasn't a difficult course. The finish was a bear for me, but I PR'd by over 20 minutes, so who knows.... This was my 7th marathon. Post-race massage: great. Post race food: lots of it. I loved this run. I don't know how you fix the course, but frankly, everything else was super.

Great option for Midwest 26.2 & 13.1
I ran the half here in 2009 and came back for my first marathon in 2010. What an awesome race! Perfectly chilly weather at the start two years in a row (a better track record than the Chicago Marathon!), awesome support along the course, and VERY enthusiastic and supportive fans (though not as many as I would've liked). I planned to finish in over 6 hours, so I took advantage of the early start option for the marathon. There were some lonely spots near miles 16-19 that required mental toughness, but otherwise, I would highly recommend this race to anyone looking for something small and well-supported.

My all-time favorite marathon!
I fell in love with this marathon in 2005 when I walked it (5:28). I became a runner the next year and knew that I had to return to Fox Cities. For a smaller race, it is well organized and the crowd support is amazing. I have returned every year for either the full or half. The time passes quickly as you run through 7 cities. I think I was actually smiling the entire way. Weather was perfect this year. Only problem was that the expo/packet pick up was a bit disjointed compared to past years. I will continue to return.

Great course for a first time marathoner.
This was my first marathon so I wasn't sure what to expect. I loved the course and crowd support and appreciated that the race was so well organized. What a great idea to have our names on the bibs. Hearing my name from the crowd helped motivate me to keep on moving. I hope to do another Fox Cities Marathon in the future.

Thanks to All of the Volunteers
This was my first marathon, so I don't have anything to compare it to. And I'm just an average runner, so I don't have any expert review of the course.
But what I can say is the experience was great, especially for a first-time marathon runner. It's a small race, so if you're not running competitively (like me), you still feel comfortable.
It was a well marked course. Plenty of water and food along the way.
But the one thing I will always remember are the volunteers. Cheering you along every step of the way and encouraging you when you just want to quit!
The only reason I gave it a four-star rating is I don't have anything to compare it or expectations (because like I said, this was my first). But I would highly recommend and run this course again.

Run Event Without Equal
I ran the half-marathon here in preparation for my sixth marathon elsewhere. I must say that the event organizers for this Run Fest in the Fox Cities have done an awesome job! Whether it is your first time in a marathon or in any running event, you can't go wrong with this one! The elite level marathoners will also find this one challenging enough to make it all worthwhile! Its high ratings in running event surveys from across the country is well deserved. I am just so thrilled that the marathon event in my hometown is so well organized.

Great Event
I don't think I could have picked a better place to run my first marathon. Everywhere you went people offered you encouragement and did whatever they could to assist you. Many of the towns had themes as you ran through them, which helped to keep a smile on your face. There were plenty of water stations, and medical staff was always close by. A great experience.

Great Small Race
This race had the highest number of aid stations of any marathon or half that I have completed, including four stops in the last couple of miles. Fans are awesome. Lots of shade. GREAT race for spectators since there is so much spectator access to the course. Late hotel checkout is great, and access to start and finish is smooth. No lines at porta-potties pre-race; where else can you find that??

It was alright.
It was a pretty good race.
Course: It was pretty flat and fast, but as pretty as the area is, there are some pretty boring parts of this race. Being in several small towns you ran through some completely asleep downtown areas, some nice riverside areas and a few neighborhoods but at other times there were stretches of boring roads and occasional strip malls. As far as the running surface goes, I remember much too much concrete. The roads, however, were wide. I started near the back and was able to easily pass from the beginning because of wide roads. It finishes in a park where I was able to jump into the river for a cold bath (something I consider a huge plus). Transportation from the start line to the finish line easy.
Organization: They know what they are doing, can be contacted before the event, and have ample water on the course. On the downside, there is little parking at the start and I don't like being told to show up at 6:45 for an 8 a.m. start (sure for a big race but not for a marathon with 1,200 runners). There is a half that starts at 7 and closes down the roads. But they do open up the community college for a warm place to hang out.
At the finish line there is no beer. No specially brewed micro-brew like at GB, no two free samples of Mich Ultra, no brat fest and beer tents like in Madison. To have a marathon in Wisconsin without beer just feels wrong.
Spectators: There are some. Getting the various cheerleading squads out is fun. Having the marathon relay helps get the crowd there, but it is a small race, so don't expect big crowds. The water stops and relay stations were well maned, which translates to a group of people at least every mile.
While this was a good race, I don't see it as a great race and am a little confused by its very high ratings. I find it utterly runnable and might do it again, but I wouldn't fly halfway across the country to run it.
For Wisconsin runners (not living in greater Appleton), they don't tell you about morning packet pick-up, but it might still be available; they just don't encourage it. Had I known, I think I would have just driven up there that morning instead of booking a hotel room like I did.

Well Organized with Terrific Spectators
I enjoyed this race overall. The size was great (although I am not a fan of the ultra-crowded marathons, so I may be biased). All of the details that matter were taken care of - the expo, course, volunteers, shuttles, and the finish line area were easy to navigate. The start area was nice, and it is in a college building where you can spread out and find a quiet place to get ready, stretch and stay warm. Food at finish line and water on course was plentiful and in ample supply. I loved the themed aid stations as well - Ghostbusters, Caddyshack, etc.
The only thing that marked this marathon down for me was that the course was pretty rural/residential, but that being said, with it being residential meant a TON of wonderful fan support. So I'll take the fan support over a prettier course. I'll close with another huge plus which was that the hotels had late checkout (4 p.m. - unheard of!) and a very helpful shuttle service to and from the race. You can tell that the organizers put a lot of thought into this race, and the community supports the marathon.

A well-organized and supported race
I've run the half marathon two times, and it's a wonderful race; from the organization to the workers to the spectators, Fox Cities has worked hard to make this a great race! The course is flat, fast and scenic.

Nice, small-city race
This is a nice "small"-city race. It is nothing like the big-city races so don't compare it to one. I thought for a small event that there was a lot of spectators and that it was run well. The one real big complaint I have is that, at the end, they mixed in walkers and half marathoners. My biggest complaint was the walkers! As far as elevation, it's not like Chicago. There are many elevation changes. With that said, they were not a big deal.

A good, flat course; 23 water stops with johns
I really liked the organization of this race. The race organizers had 23 water stops, with port-a-johns at every one and many medical volunteers on bicycles. They could drop the motorcycles; they were stinky and seemed to be just in the way. As other people had said, the cement roads can be a problem for runners who train on asphalt and dirt. I had to walk most of this race because of an I.T.B. problem, which might have been caused by the cement. Who knows? There was nothing special at the end of the race - just the usual bagels and bananas - but with all of the other good points, of the 40 other states I have done, this race would rank about 25th.

Best Volunteers in America!
If you're looking for a beautiful course, super volunteers and a well organized race at a great time of year, this is the race for you. It seemed like there were as many volunteers as racers. A flat course running through beautiful, small towns. The expo was small but nice, and beware of the concrete roads (something my feet were unprepared for). But I'll definitely be back for this one.

Fantastic Marathon in a Fantastic Community
This is possibly the best "small" marathon in which I have ever had the opportunity to participate. There is not enough allowable space in this forum to do it justice.
The marathon expo was small, but efficiently and effectively run. The pace group held a meeting the day before the marathon for runners to meet their pace leaders and ask questions. The leaders provided plans to their respective groups advising them on the pace they would be running for each part of the course and just gave us an overall feel that they cared about our goals.
The race-day weather was almost perfect, starting out at around 54 degrees and finishing in the mid-60's, with cloud cover for most of the race. The course itself was a tour of the Fox Cities area that had a few rolling hills, but nothing too intense.
The community support was exceptional. Throughout the entire course there were people cheering - sometimes quite a few and sometimes just a single family, but their enthusiasm was boundless. It made the runners feel special.
This is a "small" marathon, but the energy level rivals that of the larger marathons that I have run. I definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys running.

Good experience
This was my 6th marathon and by far the smallest. I thought having to start and finish at different locations would be a pain. However, I was able to park at the start line and took a shuttle to the start line with no problems. The community college where the start line was located at was open, so runners could wait in the warm building before the race started, which was fantastic. The crowd support was fabulous. I was a four-hour finisher and I swear that for the last mile, I felt like the only one on the course. The crowd really made me feel like I was the only runner they were cheering for. Getting a race t-shirt and a finisher's shirt was a nice surprise. I had only two complaints. The post-race massage wait was almost an hour! They might as well not even advertise free massages. Also, the post-race food was pretty lame. Super small Arby's roast beef sandwiches, which, when I opened it to add Arby's sauce, made me say, "Where's the beef?" And to add insult to injury, we were only allowed one.
Bottom line: A good race if you're looking for small size with great fan support. I wouldn't run it again, but I'd recommend it.

Recommended race (but there were some issues)
Course: This is a good course with some very nice, scenic spots along the way. The course is deceptively hilly, but most elevation changes occur gradually. There is a steep downhill around Mile 11, followed immediately by a steep (but shorter) uphill. The course was confined more or less to road berms in many places, making it rather narrow at times. However, traffic was well controlled, so it wasn't a big problem to swing out wide if necessary.
Organization: Registration, race start, and water stations were well managed. Runners' names included on the bibs was also a nice touch. The biggest complaint I have about this race (and you will hear this one many times in the '08 reviews) was the half-marathon walkers clogging up the relatively narrow course near the end of the race. This really was a significant issue, as runners (including myself) had to swing around or dodge the walkers. My second complaint was a fairly unimpressive food station at the finish.
Crowd/volunteer support: The Fox Cities communities do come out en masse to enthusiastically support this event. Kudos to the volunteers and spectators!
Overall: The weather was perfect and I had a PR by nine minutes - that tends to skew one's feelings about a race. But I can objectively say that this is a good race that, with a little tweaking, would get all five stars from me.

good first marathon
It was a great overall experience. It was my first marathon and I had a great time. The water stops were awesome; I loved all the energy and support I got. Overall, I was disappointed with the amount of crowd support. I finished in just over five hours, and the course was pretty much devoid of supporters. Great course! I enjoyed seeing all the signs welcoming us into the different towns. Good food after the race, and there was plenty of it! They ran out of small- and medium-sized finishers' shirts at the end, which was a huge bummer for a small girl who worked all summer for her first marathon. Overall, I had a great experience and I would recommend this race to others.

Well Done, Fox Cities
For my second marathon, I could not have chosen a better venue. The course was great, the support staff was always around if a runner should have problems, and the fans were top-notch. I will be back to the Fox Cities Marathon in the future.

Nice, fast course... problems at finish line
The race itself was great: nice course (very fast), good crowd support, and I went sub-3 hours!!
However, the directors decided to allow for the people who were walking the marathon to start 2 hours before the runners. The idea of this is nice, but as I was running miles 20-26, many of the walkers were blocking the course; some of them were lined up in groups six people-wide!!! As a runner who has trained for a sub-3-hour day, it was not fun dodging and maneuvering around the walking crowd during the last six miles. Many of them didn't even get out of the way when I yelled, "RUNNERS COMING UP!!" Needless to say, my day went well and I did get the sub-3-hour PR I had trained for all summer.
In conclusion, great race, fast course, and a good Boston qualifier, but I would never run the race again if the walkers are continued to be allowed the early start!!
Ps. The last 300 yards of the finishing chute were so congested with walkers that I literally had to fight through the crowd!!! That's not fun after running a 6:45 pace all day!!

Good Midwestern Marathon
This was my sixth marathon start, fourth completion, and my first start with the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. Thanks to the early start opportunity, I went ahead and ran this race (thanks to the race staff for not kicking me out when I finished in less than six hours). What I was most impressed with was the crowd support for such a small marathon. The drink stops especially were inspiring. And I must give a special thanks to the medical staff at the finish who allowed me to get some prophylactic leg icing even while I was otherwise doing well. You guys are the best!

Great first marathon
For my first marathon, this course had everything I could ask for. There are fewer than 1000 people who ran the marathon, but you'd never know it. There are spectators everywhere for the entire race - very supportive. The start line was clearly marked, there were big signs at every mile, and there were water stops every mile or so. The course is quite flat. The weather was perfect for the day - not too warm, and some leaves were falling. All in all, it was a great course with great support, and I had a wonderful first-marathon experience.

A nice run from start to finish
I came to this marathon knowing nothing about the area and never been to Wisconsin before. I thought the race was a lovely one, with pretty scenery the whole way and good crowd support without the excesses you get at big city marathons.
I did the marathon on very little training, having been injured and only just recovering in time, so I was delighted to run just over 4 hours. The good weather and plentiful aid stations helped me get through, as did the dressed up fairy with her 'magic water' and all the folk calling out my name.
The only thing I didn't like, apart from them running out of free food before I finished, was the ugly black jacket we were handed at the finish. I thought last year's technical shirt was much nicer, and I'm afraid my jacket went straight to the rubbish bin. Since women pay the same entry fee as men I think organisers should come up with race clothing that suits and fits both sexes.

Well-planned and executed
This was a well-run event from beginning to end. I took the early start, and found that we were treated every bit as well as the "regular" starters. We were allowed inside before the start, the support on the course was excellent, and the finish was well-designed. This was a pleasure!

Great course, great support!
A great marathon experience. The course support was great throughout, and I am a walker who finished in over 7 hours. Lots of aid stations, medical support, cheering and encouragement! The course was well marked, and there was traffic control throughout the entire event. I would definitely recommend this marathon to others. The crew even provided beautiful weather! Great experience!

One word: Organized!
This was my first Fox Cities and it was a terrific experience. The expo was small. Packet pickup was easy and volunteers were very friendly, despite me picking up my bib in the last hour of the weekend. Motel rate was cheap. Late checkout on Sunday was a very nice touch. Shuttle bus to the start line was a piece of cake. Volunteers again very friendly at bag and tag drop-off point. Nice job of opening UW campus so we could wait inside even though the weather was beautiful.
Sunny, no wind to start, and upper 50's. The course was gradually downhill to start and gradually uphill to finish. No real tough hills in my mind. If you live in the Dakotas or Florida, maybe you would think it is hilly, but this was a very easy course. Running through all of the towns that make up the Fox Cities is also a nice touch. It kind of felt like the first half of Boston as we ran through several of the downtowns on the route. Four gel pack stops is awesome! No need to carry any with me. Senior citizen volunteers handing out the first gel pack was inspiring! The crowds were pretty good for the first 15 miles but thinned out after that. It was pretty much up to the runner after that for inspiration. I would try to change miles 15-17, as it was a bit windy and you are out in the open.
Great finishing area! Beautiful shaded park near the lake. Exciting finish line. Very well marked staging areas and great job of running shuttle buses back to our hotels! More water stops than I have ever seen! Most of the stops were very well organized. Later on, you need to make sure the volunteers holler out "water" or "Gatorade" to delirious runners. No need to complain about a lack of water. I understand logistically why they need all of the runners/walkers to end in one spot, but it is a bummer running around walkers (half and full) the final 10 miles. You are tired enough, but having to navigate around them can make you a bit cranky. To the walkers' credit, some of them were very supportive of me as I passed them. I cannot again stress enough how organized it was. Thanks to all of the volunteers! You made it a wonderful experience. Oh yeah, it was my 24th marathon and I PR'd!! It was fastest marathon in two and a half years (I run five a year). What a great feeling!!

2007 Relay
First time doing the relay here, and I would never do it again. I found race packet directions for a first-time team from out of town to be very confusing. It was not 'team' friendly at all for those of us trying to ride in a vehicle to each exchange. It was suggested that we ride a shuttle bus from the finish line to our exchange points. I was the 5th leg, and would have had to be by myself for over 4 hours waiting. No thank you. They ran out of medals before we reached the finish, as well as running out of food. I didn't need food, but the marathoners finishing behind us after the 5-hour mark deserved some. That's unacceptable in my book. The entertainment was breaking down along the course as well. Not cool.

Great Race!
This is the second time I have run Fox Cities and I must say I prefer the route this year to previous years. The weather was great, the organization was great, and 99 percent of the spectators were great. My only complaint is with some of the idiots driving in the area. Most of the intersections were patrolled by the local police and they did a great job! That being said, they could not be at every place there are cars. I saw two different instances were runners were almost hit by a car because the drivers were in too big of hurry to wait for runners to cross in front of them. Obviously this is something the race organizers can't do anything about. Another positive was the windbreaker you get as a finisher; I thought this was a nice change of pace compared with the normal t-shirt you get at a marathon. Overall, GREAT RACE, in a great area; I will run this again next year, but I just hope that the drivers in the area are a little more cautious next year.

Good, Small Race, But Out of Food by 4:07
This year, they changed the course by essentially running the established course in reverse. There were several options for parking at the start or finish with excellent shuttle coverage. Great fluid support and top notch medical support with medics on bicycles equipped with defibrillators. The only place that organizers fell down was that there was no food left at the finish line for anyone finishing after 4 hours. I hope they fix it for next year!!

Excellent! Better than any other!
I used to run marathons but my doctor says to walk now. The opportunity to power-walk was great! Wonderful organization, hype, water stops, friendly spectators, traffic control; and an interesting course. I have been a race director and am awed by the attention to detail of these several runs all put together!!!

Pacing guy was too fast
I signed up for the 4:15 pacing group in the 2006 Fox Cities Marathon and crossed the 13-mile mark at 2:07ish. However, the pacing guy from the group was way ahead of me from mile 8 and made no attempt to keep the group with him. He almost completely ignored the pacers except for one guy he apparently knew and constantly complained about having to do the 4:15 rather than the 4 hour pacing group. I think by the end only the one guy he knew was still with him and they finished in 4 or maybe a little less. I ended up finishing quite a bit slower as I had some stomach issues but the pacing guide was already way ahead when these cropped up. My first marathon was Fox Cities in 2004 and I had signed up for the 4:30 pacing group. That gentleman explained his strategy for pacing, introduced himself and knew the pacers' names and actually talked to them. I was hoping for a similar experience and was greatly disappointed.

Beautiful course and outstanding race support.
The Fox Cities Marathon is a real winner. The run along lakes, over rivers and through well kept urban areas was inspiring. Race support was the best; there were plenty of energy gel, power drink and water stops. The spectator support was very good also.
I made the trip from Alaska and my brother drove over from Minnesota to run this race. If we had one thing that we could add to the event overall, it would be an organized lake cruise before or after the event.
This race had fewer than 1,000 marathon runners, yet it was as organized as any of the large marathons that I have done. I would recommend Fox Cities Marathon to runners of all levels.

Nice Race - Nice Day - Enjoyed the Experience
I thought the course was good - with the exception of the long incline over the river at mile 15, there were no hills that were very difficult. Mile #24 - come on, it's an overpass. The wind made it not much fun to be alone for Miles #5-10 - I guess I need more friends.
The only downer I see is trying to navigate all the walkers after Mile #24.
I loved going into the gym. Sign up for a massage, take a hot shower, come back and get a massage. Nice! Nice! Nice!
I expected a lot more concrete, but it was only in a couple spots.
Spectators were great where there were some.
Water stops were plentiful. Cups were a little under-filled, but with so many stops, that was OK.

Great place for my first marathon.
The race was well organized and a lot of fun. Weather conditions were almost ideal. We didn't have the predicted rain and the sky was partly cloudy but is was windy. The course was relatively flat with only a few hills and one overpass to cross. The elevation change over the course was only a couple of hundred feet, and most of it very gradual. There weren't a lot of spectators, but they were very supportive of the runners.

Fantastic time!
The start point of the race had moved from the previous year to a more scenic part of the Fox Valley area. The foot bridge bottleneck from the previous year was avoided, but it was replaced with a narrow frontage road run for the first mile of the race. That's about the only thing to improve upon for next year in my opinion. The spectators were awesome; you never went more then three minutes without someone saying, "Looking good, keep going." Plenty of water/gel/Gatorade stops, plenty of post-race food, warm showers at the UW Fox Valley, and very helpful/friendly race staff. For my first marathon I couldn't have picked a better one. Thanks Appleton!

Great experience in Wisconsin
I flew into Madison and drove the 105 miles on Saturday. I hadn`t pre-registered, so I went to the expo. The nice women in the information office gave me great directions and she was really excited and well informed about the marathon. The shuttle buses took me to the start and were very efficient, even though I arrived past the latest time (I don`t like to stand around before the start).
The water stops were the best and the volunteers were well trained and helpful. The mile markers were very clear and could be seen from a distance, so if you were trying to run an even pace, you could adjust easily. The relay runners were mostly identifiable with the relay sign on their back - this should be a requirement. The only reason the organization did`t get 5 stars was because I had a problem in the last mile trying to pass so many walkers. Someone should tell them not to walk 5-across in the last 400 or so meters. The people on the course were awesome. This was my 9th marathon this year - I am running one a month and it was the best one by far.

GRRREAT
Thank you very much for the grrreeeeat half marathon. This was my fourth half marathon this year and was the most fun of all! The volunteers were very helpful and pleasant! The bonfire at the park before sunrise was very much appreciated! Great food items at the end and great band! Will be back next year!

Amazing fan support - course not for novices
Amazing fan support, but this course is not for novices.
In trying to make this as short and sweet as possible, here is what I think people need to know about this race:
This isn't a very large race, but the fan support and local volunteers were amazing! This community really gets behind this race and it is clear that they are proud of it. That truly makes this marathon something special. The course is challenging. Between miles 14 and 24 it's mostly uphill with a couple of significant hills at 15 and 24. The one at 24 is demoralizing if you're running on fumes when you get there. If you're a novice or don't come from an area of the country that is very hilly I think you're in for a battle. If you're a veteran, and you want a race that is a little more difficult than most, then go for it! Lastly, I would have liked more port-a-potties at the start, but isn't that every race?

Highly Recommended for First-Timers and Veterans
The organization of this race is better than most of the national races I have run. They announced that there were several thousand volunteers for this weekend of races - almost one volunteer for each racer!
The water stops were amazing. Almost each one had a theme with volunteers in costume and music playing. Their enthusiasm was welcome, especially late in the race.
Kudos to the race staff, the volunteers, and the general public for making this a wonderful experience!

Great Volunteers, Fans, and Food!
I completed the full marathon twice and thought it was good, but I finished the half marathon today and thought it was GREAT! This is a small, well run event fueled by the enthusiasm of its volunteers (themed water stops!) and the fans that lined much of the course. This is an event really supported by the community. The course starts at the waterfront and migrates into typical neighborhoods, with some manageable hills. Post-race food was plentiful, included sandwiches, bagels, lots of cookies/bars, etc.
For those that had a bad experience in '05, give them another chance.

Well organized and super friendly.
I have done this a few times in the past. The course is NOT easy (with the hills), but the marathon caters to walkers also, which most don't. I have completed 43 marathons and ultras and next to LA, this is my favorite. Not as pretty as the Twin Cities Marathon, but it has an 8-hour clock.

Great race!!!
First of all, let me say I was sad to read the previous comment telling people to "give this one a miss!" This was one person's bitter experience. I, on the other hand, have done this race 6 times over the last 12 years and find it to be one of the more enjoyable marathons in the Midwest!!! I have done over 60 marathons of different sizes and types, but this one is a fun time and a perfect size. Great organization, wonderfully challenging course with a good mix of flats and hills, and a great time of the year for a road trip to the Appelton, WI area as the fall weather is just starting to change the landscape with the turning of the leaves! I keep coming back to this race for so many reasons and now they have the race going over the tressel bridge, so beautiful! I will once again be there for the 2006 race to take on the course and enjoy yet another trip to beautiful Appleton.
To the marathon organization... KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK YOU ALL DO TO PUT ON SUCH A GREAT MIDWEST MARATHON!

Give this one a miss!!!!
This was one of my worst running experiences and the organizers still have not gotten it right! I was one of those not allowed to finish and it still leaves a bad taste, especially now when I am getting the flyers for the 2006 run. The organizers never were able to sort out my change of address and I never received what was promised in all the newspaper articles. Seems like they were all talk. Give this one a miss!!!

Great Marathon!!
This is simply a wonderful marathon. Greaat volunteers and spectators, a beautiful course and well organized.
This year there was an issue with the weather which caused some confusion but I am sure this will be addressed and in no way should affect your decision to run this great marathon.

A Decent Small-Town Race
I ran the 2005 race. I was not aware of the confusion related to the alleged closing of the course; if it had affected me, I would have graded the organization much lower. My experience with the organization was excellent - the race has a big-event feel. I even got to run a little bit with Bill Rodgers. For a small race (560 finishers) there was outstanding spectator support. Most of my 17 marathons have been run in bigger cities, and I didn't expect there to be nearly the crowd support that showed up on race-day.
I was disappointed with the course. The pedestrian bridge over the Fox River is a nice touch, but it is at the 2=mile mark. Most of the race is run in residential neighborhoods which aren't particularly scenic. I am from out of town, so I don't know if there is there a way to incorporate more of the river and lake into the course. I was also disappointed by the fact that we had to share the roads with cars. I never felt as though I was crowded by the cars, but I never was able to be at ease with the fact the cars were just a few feet away. I would have also liked a few bands on the course. There were plenty of water stops, and the volunteers were exceptionally friendly.

race officials lost control
As reported in a local paper available through this website, the race director and a local police department are avoiding responsiblity for a very poor decision to close the race course during a rain. As a runner, I was told by police at mile 15.25 that I had to quit, not could or should quit, and all traffic control and support was being canceled for the last 11 miles of the run. Being from out of town, I did not know the course to continue on my own without run support. Turned out the officers were wrong and the course workers stayed in place. The race officials simply lost control of their event in an inexcusable fashion.

Great support, bad communication
The Fox Cities Marathon was a bittersweet experience this year. I decided to compete in my first marathon last Christmas and along with a friend have been training for it for 9 months prior to the event. The big day came to an end with disappointment and a few tears. The bitter part: around mile 16 many of us (myself included) were told that the race was cancelled due to rain and more storms coming on the radar. We were also not allowed to run at our own risk. Many were shuttled to the finish line, while my running partner and I opted to be picked up by some of our supporters. Around an hour later I drove through Little Chute on my way home and was surprised to see marathoners still running. I was extremely upset to think that we were told we couldn’t finish and that others were not. I am appalled at the miscommunication between race officials. If the race was cancelled and we weren’t allowed to continue at our own risk than it should have been that way across the board, not only at certain stations. I would have kept going through the rain, storms, or whatever the day would bring. Cancellation due to storms is understandable; utter lack of communication between rest stops and race officials is not.
Now the sweet part: the supporters and volunteers at water stations did a phenomenal job. Thank you for your efforts and words of encouragement. It was wonderful to see so many people out cheering on runners and taking pride in their community. It motivated me and my fellow runners to keep going. Time will tell if I decide to run again next year but if I don’t, I can guarantee you I will be one of those people cheering on runners as they make their way.

Great small-town marathon
I just ran the Fox Cities marathon yesterday and it was a great event. Very well-organized race with good crowd support throughout the different communities (bands/cheerleaders/music). Lots of gel stops and fruit towards the end. Plus the course is scenic - you run across a mile-long pedestrian tressel bridge, have great views of the water, and even get to go through a 'drain-pipe like tunnel' later on in the course. Others said the course changes were a positive, with less cement. A few hills from 15-on, but nothing major. Best part was my 3:28 PR. Would definitely recommend this race for next year!

Best small marathon I've ever run
Ran the Fox Cities marathon yesterday up in Appleton, WI. What a race! Only 600 runners, very well organized, and a beautiful course. We crossed a mile-long pedestrian bridge over the lake early on, went through a cool 'drain-pipe-like' tunnel later, and had great water views and friendly neighborhoods much of the race. Plus the volunteer support was the best I've seen. Well-organized water/aid stations, lots of gels, fruit, etc. The course is well laid out, some hills between 15-18, but nothing too bad. Ran a 3:28 PR. I'll definitely be running this one again!

Everything excellent but the concrete
Just ran this race today. We had a drenching downpour about 2-1/2 hours into the race that left your shoes feeling like they weighed 4 lbs. each (running in 1 inch of standing water for about 1/2 mile, raining so heavily I could hardly see). Fortunately, it was not cold so we didn't freeze as well. Race support was the most organized and complete I've ever seen. Nasty 1/2 mile hill (turns a corner midway around buildings so unless you drive the course before the race, the second half of the climb would come as a shock) at about mile 15, then a steep highway overpass with mile 24 at the middle on top. Lots of long concrete road stretches especially in second half of race - very hard on the feet. But for the concrete I would definitely run this one again....

Fantastic small town marathon
The 2004 Fox Cities Marathon is an excellent small town marathon. The course was somewhat flat and exciting. The people of the Fox Cities were fantastic. I have never seen more enthusiastic spectators, especially in a small town race. More people came out to cheer on the runners than in larger races that I have run, for example the Honolulu Marathon.
The weather couldn't be better. Lower fifties in the morning to about 70 at the finish.
I only have two complaints about this marathon: The Gatorade mixtures were horrendously strong. I could barely even get it down. On the positive side though, the water stations were all manned by enthusiastic volunteers!
And here is the real big complaint that I have: The walkers! I had to run into traffic multiple times to avoid walkers that were blocking the course. I understand that this is probably a popular event with local walkers but they have got to leave at least enough room for a runner to pass by. It's not only highly annoying for runners, it's a danger to the runners.
Despite these two complaints I did run a PR of 3:28:47. I would highly recommend this marathon to anyone.

Great fun, well organized, amazing spectators.
I would rate the course 5 stars except for all the concrete. Every thing else about the race is first rate. Had a wonderful time. A very special thank you to the best friends any one could have, the McGuirk family of Menasha.
Thanks Chris, Cheryl, Michael, Erin, Leigh, and Wendel.

Race organization is superb...worth running...
I would definitely recommend this race to anyone who is looking for a small, well-run marathon. There were more volunteers, medics, and police officers to support you than I have ever seen. They had at least 3-4 GU stops, water/Gatorade every mile, and fruit towards the end of the race. While the spectators were spotty in areas the volunteers and police officers cheered you on the whole way. The food tent at the end was also well stocked with fruit, bagels, etc. The finisher's shirt was a nice long-sleeve pull-over.
My only complaint is there is a fair amount of concrete on the course. It would be great if they would consider getting rid of some of those areas.
One last warning there are a couple of killer hills towards the end that challenge your fortitude. Beware!

It don't get any better than this.
This was marathon number 8 for me. Even with the heat it was a PR for me. The two things this goup cannot control are the heat and the hills (not really bad ones when you look back at it, but cruel when they are there at the end). The crowd was great. The name tag on the bib was a GREAT idea as you were always addressed and cheered for by name. The expo was just right. The staff was well informed and every stage was thoroughly organized by very caring people. The shirt and medal were classy. The crowd support cannot be emphasized enough. 'Private people' were offering Gatorade, fruit and water. Medical staff randomly asking people if they were doing okay. Lots of emergency personnel presence. This is the standard by which to judge other marathons. These guys did it right.

Great race for everyone - including first-timers!
This was my first marathon - I could not have picked a better one to run. The online registration was very easy. I called the office to ask questions before the race - the staff is great and gave me tips on pre-race preparation. The run is excellent - mostly flat the first 1/2 with gradual hills afterwards. The tour of the Fox Cities in the race is scenic & nice. I have only heard good reviews from other runners too. The pacesetters are helpful & friendly. Good fans. It is everything as advertised. Water stations just about every mile with food, sports drink and GU available. Topnotch - will do it again.

A great community event!
I came to Wisconsin to enjoy the fall weather and add another state to my collection of races. The people here are just topnotch! The entire community (a bunch of small Wisconsin cities around the Fox River) was fired up and excited about the weekend. The expo was well organized, in fact one of the volunteers went out of her way to make sure that there was a wind-shirt in my size at the finish line (I'm a slow finisher) - she was just representative of everyone involved. The race itself went through multiple towns, multiple places where GU was handed out (at least 4 stops), and very enthusiastic people at the water stops. The race also had a bus transport everyone to the start line, and there is plenty of parking and SHOWERS at the finish. Good set up.
The city of Appleton also sponsors an Octoberfest the day before the race, and the whole community seems fired up.
One of my favorite races ever since everyone involved was just so NICE!!!

Excellent organization and a lot for your money
The organization of this race was phenomenal. Online entry was a breeze, packet pick-up was quick and easy (plus there was a nice expo for a smaller race), race day was run very well - there were shuttles from basically every local hotel.
The course was much better than I expected. Having grown up in the Fox Cities I was expecting to run through many subdivisions with no trees and look-alike houses. Instead I was treated to a very scenic start, a couple bland miles in the middle and a nice tour of the Fox Cities for the rest.
The course is downhill for the first few miles and then is a gradual uphill for most of the remaining miles, especially after mile 15.
Aid stations were plentiful (every mile) and the miles were very well marked with large signs.
Finisher's received a medal and a very nice windbreaker-type pullover at the finish. It is one of the nicer finisher shirts I have received.
All in all a great event.

Great Marathon for the First-Timer
This was my first marathon. I chose it based in part on the comments here. I thought everything was just first-rate. The fan support was wonderful. I suppose one could call it sparse in spots, but I thought there was always someone around and didn’t notice any real gaps except around mile 21 or so. The people really do call you by name and appreciate a smile or thumbs-up in return. The cheering really kept me going all race long. Some of the water stations were very elaborate and made a strong impression. Their music and cheering were real pick-me-ups during the race. Though I didn’t partake of any, it seemed that most stations had energy drink and several had gels and even some food. Most of all, though, the fans were just great. I also thought the course was very scenic most of the way, and challenging but fair. I don’t think it’s as flat as advertised, but there are only two significant hills and everything else is just gentle rolling terrain that’s good for the legs. I also like the way the course changed sides of the road every 5 miles or so. That’s also good for the legs. Finally, everything was superbly organized. I was from out of town and a little apprehensive even after studying all of the information on the website. I needn’t have worried. I had no trouble finding out exactly where I needed to be and when, and what would be happening when I got there. I definitely recommend taking the bus tour of the course if you’re not familiar with it. Also, the exposition had some worthwhile exhibits including a body fat analysis. About the only thing I could complain about was the weather and there’s nothing anyone could have done about that. I would definitely like to run this one again (if I do another marathon, that is).

Fox Cities Rock! Great Marathon!
This was my first marathon, and I could not have been more pleased. From the very beginning, when I was first considering running it, to the very end, you are not considered just a runner, you are considered family. There were 22 water stops, and towards the last 6-7 miles they included fruit, bagels, and energy gels. Plus, each water stop had a theme - it was great. Your bib has you first name in bold print, so everyone is calling your name and cheering you on throughout the race. Although you may run miles before seeing any crowds, when you finally did see them, their support was great and carried you the distance. The only one complaint I have is about the sports drink (Ultima) served. Ultima is not a very popular drink in Wisconsin, so I was not able to find it/test it before the big day. GREAT JOB FOX CITIES. I will be back!!!!

Great race for your first marathon!
This was my first. I picked this race becuase of its size, I didn't want to be overwhelmed by the mob in a big race until I had more confidence. I was somewhat apprehensive that this race might skimp on amenities, fans, because of the size. I was wrong! It was well organized, the water/replenisher stops were great! The replenisher drink really seemed to help me. The fans were wonderful!! It was an experience that I'll never forget, and I'll probably run it again. The only negatives were the hills and pedestrian bridges towards the end of the race. They probably wouldn't have seemed so tough earlier in the race. Anyway, thanks Fox Cities! Having my name on the bib was a great idea!

Well organized race, sceinic course
The race was well organized, the course was sceinic but not as flat as I thought it would be. This year the weather was too warm (62 degrees), it would be a good idea to have the race a couple weeks later in the year.

GREAT MARATHON
This was my 35th marathon and my 2nd Fox Cities and the over-all organization doesn't get any better. The volunteers were just awesome. Sure there were stretches of the race where there weren't many spectators but when there was, they were loud and brought a smile to my face. If you want a nice mid-sized marathon give this one a try next year.

One of the state's best marathons.
This is the 6th different marathon I've run in Wisconsin, and it certainly is at the top of the list for overall organization and enjoyment. The course takes you through many of the communities of the Fox Valley over mostly flat terrain. The start area through the first 5 miles is the most scenic. Fan support is good, although somewhat placed in pockets on the course. All of the water stations (starting at mile 2 and every mile after) are outstanding. Plenty of liquids, vaseline, and cheering volunteers. Packet pick-up and shuttles helped me as an out of towner get to where I needed to be on time. Job well done, Fox Cities!!

few but enthusiastic fans, windy and barren finish
As a Fox Cities local I ran this as a first time marathon in 1999, finishing in 3:59. The course gives a good view of the various towns in the Fox Valley. Not
many fans, but they were vocal. Great medical staff at the finish as I needed an IV. Very windy and desolate from miles 18 to 25. Seems to be stuck at about 700 runners every year. No traffic hassles though. My wife worked at the 7 mile aid station, then drove to meet me at the 17 mile mark and jogged the last 9.2 miles with me!

Incredibly well organized mid-small marathon
All I can say about the 2001 Fox Cities Marathon is that I've never run a more pleasant race. Everything was nearly ideal: the weather, the organization, the enthusiasm of the volunteers and spectators, and the mostly residential course. At several waterstops along the way they even cheer you by name and sometimes hometown. There is apparently a competition for the best waterstop. The only minor complaints: the combined start of the walkers and runners leads to runners darting in and out between walkers (they should ask the walkers to start on the right or at the back or start them 5 minutes later), and they ran out of XL T-shirts (promising to order more and ship them).

stand by my statements
okay---let's see... if you are gifted to run under 3 hours you will not have a problem with walking 1/2 marathoners--cuz they are probably running. But if you are running between 3 and 3 1/2 hours, there was definitely a problem with walkers side by side. figure it out for yourselves...

Challenging 2nd half.
I read the comment about the 1/2 marathoners in the way for the last two miles. Well....I disagree and I had plenty of them when I was finishing. I placed 2nd overall in 2:32:13 and with the course spectators spreading out in the countryside and battling the winds for the last eight miles, my pace dropped to over 6:00 pace for miles 20-24. When I merged into the 1/2er's I felt energized for the home stretch. It made me feel I was close to finishing and they were cheering me on. Mile 25. 5:55. Mile 26 5:48. Enough said about them getting in the way! Thanks for being there 1/2er's.

need to do something about walkers at the end
Every step is a struggle the last 2 miles: you go against a strong head wind and you stumble across walkers 5 and 6 abreast--who make you run around them---a real bummer. It clearly takes away any good I would have to say about this race period.

Decent Race; Concrete & Barren Stretch Detract
(Run in 99). Organization and support enthusiastic. For spectators: at expo, ask info desk for detailed area street map (mine had a realtor's logo), which really helped us navigate course. Neighborhood cheering not as good as advertised/hoped for. Much of course is concrete streets... real leg-pounders. Shorter-distance races share course and walking is encouraged, which can mean avoiding walkers 2-3+ abreast. Last few miles in not-so-scenic housing developments and farm field remnants. A good alternative to yet another long-sleeve shirt (wind pullover) is given to finishers. Showers/changing avail. at finish. Get attention by wearing GB Packers logos or those of hated rivals (Vikings, Broncos, Lions, etc.). Reserve lodging early if Packers play at home race day Sunday.

Overall a very well organized race.
Excellent marathon. Only two negative aspects, (i) the spectators are very sparce and uninvolved and (ii) the 1998 course had a number of knee-busting hills. It would be a better course if run in reverse because the current course has short very steep downhills and longer gentler sloping uphills.

Overall good race, good fan support
The Fox Valley area really comes out to support this race well. Good fans cheer you on at several points during the race. It's a small turnout, so you may find yourself running alone at times, but you share the course with the 1/2 marathoners if you're fast enough to catch them. No big name runners though.
Some hills make it challenging but not impossible to turn in a PR. The course crosses the Fox river several times which makes a windy day even windier. I recommend it just because of all the friendly people.
