Great Job Since Race was cancelled for 4 years

It was a really good experience. The volunteers were friendly and helpful. The course being only on paseos was nice, did not have to deal with any car traffic. Plenty of water stops, the cupless water stops worked really well. However, there were a few spots on the course that weren't clearly marked, and some runners went the wrong way for a short time. No porta potties at the start of the race, only a couple of stalls in the park bathroom. Lots of parking, but it was 3/4 of a mile from the start. I would definitely recommend this race, and I will do it again. New organizers, new course, after no race for 4 years.

A Well Organized Local Event

Santa Clarita Marathon is a small, well organized local event. The course starts on a wide street. After 3 miles, it loops along the bank of a dry river bike route; and local parks. The scenic is valley view about the same all the way. Although it is small event, there were plenty well staffed and well stocked aid stations. There were volunteers to guide the ways in all road branches, junctions. Without their guidance, I may get lost somewhere along the way. Consider the size, there were many spectators along the way. Some sit on their balconies to cheer for the runners. It was a very nice day for running a marathon in 2019. The run started in cold morning. When we got into half way, the temperature got higher and air was dry. The California fire were in the neighborhood these few days. There was no pollution or any hint of impact to the event.

The Perfect Half Marathon

Mile 9-13 is slightly downhill but 7-9 is slightly uphill. Most of the other race is fairly flat and goes through a combination of natural parkland (though you run on asphalt) and regular roads. A few highlights for me: Pace runners at many different levels so its easy to find one going your desired speed; tons of volunteers and community members cheering you on; the starting and finish lines are fairly close together, making it easy for friends and family to find you; they have a loud and high-energy drum corps pounding away right near the finish line so that you get that last burst of energy to cross the finish line.

Excellent organization & course support

Flawless organization, PROMPT on-time start, excellent course support (water and sports drink almost every mile, never more than 2 miles apart), and some of the cheapest registration fees around make this a great marathon! The full marathon course gets a bit boring, due in part to the scenery and in part due to the lack of spectators after the half turn-off, but the scenery isn't by any means ugly (e.g., industrial yards and warehouses). 5-year age group brackets maximize your chance at an age-group placement/prize. I have run the half once and the full once and will definitely be returning for at least the half every year!

Excellent race, nice course!

I thought that his race was especially well-organized, especially considering the marathon was only a few hundred runners (versus the much larger half marathon). It was less expensive than the going marathon price, hotels are plentiful in the area, parking was free and easy. The course has rolling hills, though nothing particularly steep of any length. Some parts weren't that interesting, especially Soledad Cyn Rd. at Miles 20-22. But the spectators and course support were excellent. I didn't pay exact attention, but it seemed like an aid station with both water and poweraid at least every mile, if not more. The finish line area was great - lots of places to sit and relax, unlike other marathons where there's no place to rest weary legs. Finish line refreshments were a bit sparse, but staffed with enthusiastic volunteers. Overall an excellent race and extremely well organized.

Well organized, flat fast course

The logistical set up of this race was excellent. No traffic pulling in at 55 min prior to start. Less than an hour drive from most parts of LA. Easy parking structure right at the finish line and only a couple blocks from the start. Also this was the first time I've ever seen a race with enough porto-potties. And they were very nice ones to boot. It is a medium sized race (I believe a couple thousand runners), big enough to have energy at the start, small enough to make it easy to get in and out. The course was pretty flat except for the pedestrian overpasses near the finish. Some of the road to path transitions are a bit odd, running through apartment complex parking lots. Well stocked and frequent water stations. The weather was very cool, mid-40s to start, mid-60s to finish. A great PR opportunity. Flawless organization!

Great fast marathon

Loved the course which was mainly on bike/walking trails. There were very gradual hills but not any killer climbs. The 2nd half of course does get lonely and I had a stretch with nobody ahead or behind to be seen for about 15 minutes. 4 hr pace group was a little faster than it should have been at about 8:50/mile through 14 at that point I dropped back. Spectators sparse but volunteers enthusiatic. A little hot last few miles.

Well organized, small marathon on a flat course

This was my seventh marathon and set a PR by about three minutes. This event has about triple the number of half marathoners, so after the split it gets lonely out there, making it much different from a big city marathon. If you run an 8:00/mile or faster, plan on running alone for most of the second half. The course runs along bike paths for most of the course to reduce the amount of road closures. It is a well organized event, and had a decent amount of spectators for a smaller marathon. There were also plenty of water stations. There was only one pace group, which was four hours because of the size of the marathon. So if you want to run a smaller event on a flat course, I highly recommend this marathon.

Great Marathon!

Just completed this marathon and had a great time. The course support from the volunteers was fantastic! At every water station you were greeted by enthusiastic volunteers that encouraged you along the way. I agree with the prior comment that once the full marathoners split from the half runners, you are suddenly by yourself and the other runners are few and far between, which is the way I like it. The weather was warm (finishing temp was at about 84 for me), but the water and Gatorade were cold. Would definitely recommend this race.

Perfect Beginners' Course

This was the first marathon I have participated in, and I am hooked. I went into this marathon very unsure of what my experience would be like, but the event felt like a 5 star event. Albeit this is my first marathon, the spectators and multitude of volunteers and motivation from other runners made it feel like family. Great accolades to the event organizers, volunteers, and countless involved. SCM you rock!

Good small marathon

If it rains again this year and you want to wear a sweatshirt the first few miles and might want it back, the course lends itself to this. Shed the sweatshirt at mile 4 when the course turns left off the bike path and goes north on McBean over the river. Leave the shirt hanging on the fence. When you pass this same spot at mile 12, retrieve your shirt, carry it down to the turnoff for the half marathon, and leave it hanging on the fence again. You pass by this same spot at mile 25.8 and can grab your shirt with ease and carry it the last .4 to the finish line.

Small race - got a little more than expected

This was the first time I ran a marathon hoping to get a BQ so I had specific goals - flat, fast and good weather. Santa Clarita delivered on all three even though it rained for the first hour or so. The race itself is small if you're running the marathon. As is typical these days a vast majority of the people who run the race are doing the 1/2 so at the split off point you're all of a sudden running alone or virtually alone. The course is flat - I don't count overpasses as hills - but it makes a lot of turns. It avoids a lot of roads but you end up in strange places. There was one point where I was running and I couldn't see a runner ahead of me or behind me and couldn't see a spectator or volunteer and was navigating by signs posted on trees, fences, etc. Odd. At the end of the day I was able to fall in to my pace quickly, the aid stations were well stocked with supportive people and the price was great. And, if it matters, I BQ'd.

Nice small event but course not a PR opportunity

The local newspaper said the 2011 running of the Santa Clarita marathon was a 'well hydrated' event. It rained and was a bit cold at the start. This made the course tougher because of all the subtle turns on trails between subdivisions. There was an area of the course that was a stretch of loose gravel - hard to run on. Hills consisted of several overpasses and underpasses. There were also a few pedestrian bridges to cross. Otherwise one gets their money worth for the race. Spectators were few. Volunteers were great especially in the rain. Host hotel was great place to stay - easy walk to start and from finish.

Scenic Small-Town Fun

The out-and-back around mile 20 was brutal, but other than that, the course was nice. The paseos are a fun challenge along the way, but they are taller than I was expecting. A very scenic, and surprisingly flat, course. It was also impressive how little of it was actually on city streets. The spectators/volunteers along the way were great, despite the rain at the beginning. It was quiet along most of the course, so it was great to have people stationed throughout it. Having the bibs for the full and half so similar in color did make pacing a littler harder at the beginning (especially considering how many more people do the half than the full), but I was able to find my groove quite easily.

A lot of bang for your buck!

I would highly recommend this marathon for anyone who is looking for a small cozy atmosphere and convenience. This is not a mega marathon, but a small city marathon that is priced right. You get a shirt, a medal, and plenty of support along the way. The marathon starts and finishes at the Hyatt Regency and there is plenty of parking. One of my favorite marathons to run in Southern California.

Big Marathon - Small Crowd !!!

Having ran 16 Marathons and numerous 1/2's. It's nice to have a big marathon offered to you for a great value. For $73 bucks you get a great course, aid stations, shirt and medal. What a bargain. I really like the idea of the small crowds and the fact that you don't have to get up 3 hours early to be shuttled to the starting line- it's a looped course. Santa Clarita organizers thank you putting on this event. BL

Great Marathon

The organization was great. In spite of bad weather, everyone did their part to make it a great marathon. It wasn't too crowded at all. My only complaints are their were a lot of down and backs, especially in the last half, and alot of the run was on bike paths, which is kind of hard on this old mans knees. Great T-shirt, medal wasn't very good. Overall great marathon.

Outstanding small marathon

The organization of the marathon was great. Being able to stay at a hotel within steps of the starting line is outstanding. While there are plenty of periods without spectators, the supporters that were there were very vocal. The course itself is beautiful and fast (except for the overpasses towards the end of the race!). I would suggest this race to anybody looking for a marathon that isn't overcrowded and overpriced. With LA only a short drive away, the race is in a perfect location.

Kudos to Santa Clarita for being well organized, well supported, and for having an increasingly beautiful course every year. The weather cooperated as usual. I have run this race several times, and 2010 was another super experience. It is the best local race going!

Must-Run Small Marathon

The Santa Clarita Marathon is a refreshing break from large marathon scene and is a great example of how an entire small community can pull of such a good event. Entry Fees: Even if you register late, the entry fee is still substantially lower than other local marathons such as Los Angeles, Long Beach and any Rock and Roll Marathon. Registration: Registration was easy, and you had the option to register via on-line or paper. Marathon Expo/Host Hotel: The marathon expo was fairly small but well-organized. It was held at the host hotel, the Hyatt. The marathon start and finish was just outside of the hotel. There was no pre-race pasta meal. The Starting Area: There seemed to be plenty of porta-potties in the starting area. The lines did not seem that long. The marathoners and half-marathoners started together at the same time, and although the 5K runners also began at the same time, they were on the opposite side of the street and a medium separated them from everyone else. A six-year-old girl sang the national anthem and received a loud round of applause when she finished. As usual, there were some slower runners who felt the need to station themselves near the front of the starting area. The Course: The course was mostly along bike paths throughout the city. There were a lot of twists and turns, some of them sharp, so at times the course was crowded. The half-marathoners split from the marathoners at the 12.5-mile mark, so the course really opened up for the marathoners after that. Although not an extremely difficult course, the course was at times deceptively challenging due to the rolling hills and numerous 90-, 180- and 360-degree turns. There were plenty of water stations along the way, and porta-potties were available. Spectators: There were a lot of enthusiastic spectators cheering on the runners throughout the marathon. As we ran through neighborhoods, it seemed that entire communities were out of their houses cheering for us. Volunteers: The volunteers were very helpful and supportive. They cheered us on as much as the spectators. The Finish Area: My only complaint of the marathon was the finish area. Once we crossed the finish line, there was not adequate space available for us to recover. Only about 10 yards separated the finish line from the volunteers who placed medals around the finishers' necks. There was no recovery area that separated the finishers from the crowds. We were all mixed in with one another less then 25 yards from the finish line. If bottled water was available, I did not see it. Recommendation: Although some fine-tuning needs to be done at the finish line, this is a great, small, community marathon that everyone should experience. I will run this one again at some point in the future.

Great "First" Marathon!

This was my first marathon so I don't have other experiences for comparison but I thought it was fantastic, especially for a first marathon. I live in the area and had a chance to run many parts of the course. It starts on city streets and moves to running/bike paths after about 4 miles. It works well as the mixed marathon/half marathon participants spread out by the time the paths get narrower. The second half of the course is a bit quieter, as fewer than 25% of the people run the full (about 350 this year); however, the aid stations are plentiful (nearly every mile) and well staffed. There is great course staffing and pretty good fan/spectator support throughout. A great "first time" marathon, as it has a small-town feel but is supported as well as any large marathon and is a Boston qualifier. Highly recommended!

An uncrowded run in a beautiful city!

The marathoners are fewer than the half and the run is incredibly fun! The sights and terrain are constantly changing to make it go even more quickly. The support from the volunteers and on-lookers is unbeatable. :)

Great, small, So Cal race

This was a fun little race. The course is flat to undulating with no major hills. It's a fairly fast course, but running up the ramps of the pedestrian bridges that came after mile 25 was challenging. Even so, this was my 10th marathon and my fastest. It was a luxury to be able to stay warm (and use a real bathroom!) at the Hyatt and then walk out to the start line 10 minutes before the race. Then at the finish you can walk right back to your room again since it finishes near the Hyatt. The expo is also at the Hyatt so the organization and convenience is nice. As expected at a small race, there are not a lot of spectators. If you need lots of music and cheering, go do a Rock-n-Roll. But the volunteers were superb; they were so enthusiastic! There were lots of kids with boundless energy, and people in costumes. They really helped keep me going. I would run this race again in a heartbeat.

A great little marathon

Having never run this, I wasn't expecting so much. I liked the course because it had a lot of variety of scenery with many changes in direction. The bike trails were ideal. The course volunteers did a great job in directing the runners on this maze. The small-town feel was refreshing. I will do this one again. Great job, Santa Clarita!

fun and energetic course

I ran the half-marathon. I found the course really nice to run. It was a little hilly and kept twisting and turning so that you never felt like you were just running in a long line to nowhere. It was very well organized. It was fantastic to be able to walk from the Hyatt Valencia to the starting line. Thanks to all of the great volunteers handing out water!

Highly recommended!!

Overall, this was a very good race, and I would recommend it to anyone. The course was very pleasant - the route followed city streets for about the first four or five miles, and then followed a biking/jogging trail. This worked out well because it gave runners more room until the crowd dispersed a bit. The organization was overall very good, and the staff were very pleasant and helpful. One area of concern was that the half marathon participants began in the same group as the marathoners, and out-numbered the marathoners by about four to one. This was a problem for me, because I kind of allowed myself to be pulled by the flow at a pace slightly faster than I had planned running. This is my own fault; staying to your planned pace is much easier said than done when most everyone else is going fast. The spectators were great and very enthusiastic. The kids a the aid stations (water and Gatorade at every mile) were wonderful! I would only add that the race organizers could have made life A LOT easier for their volunteers had they placed trash cans about 50 feet past each aid station instead of just telling folks to just throw their cups on the ground. Although I normally don't like live bands at my marathons, the bands were actually pretty good and got people pumped up. Three cheers for "Bulletproof Socks." They rocked! The support at the finish line was great. Overall, no real criticisms... every marathon is different. I enjoyed this one a great deal. Finally, I would just like to say that this race, and all races in general would be a lot more enjoyable if all participants would be just a little more mindful of basic, good citizenship. For example, instead of just dropping their cups to the ground when finished, some people would throw them over fences or overpasses. Come on, people! Also, some people like to spit over their shoulders without looking. The examples of rude behavior could go on and on. It's a shame that some people are so oblivious to the impact of their actions on others. On the whole, great day.

Good small marathon

This is a nice small marathon, with few spectators, beautiful volunteers - most of them children, filled with cheers and support for runners. The course is nice; once it splits from the half, it gets nicer but lonelier. It needs to have gel on mile 18-20, but they had very good hydration fountains. I like this marathons where there is no waiting in the cold or rain, and once you're finished, in 500 meters, you're in your hotel room. Congratulations; I enjoyed it.

Great, smaller marathon; very well organized

I really don't have anything bad to say about this marathon: nice, small expo; very organized registration process; and parking was super easy, right by the finish line. I was a little worried when I saw that the marathoners and half-marathoners were all starting together, but the pack dispersed quickly, and the course never felt crowded. Overall, a nice course.... mostly on smooth asphalt bike paths. I wouldn't describe it as a fast course, as there were lots of twists, turns, and a few hills (equal number of downhills and uphills), but a fun course to run nevertheless. Volunteer support was excellent, with lots of kids handing out Gatorade and water. No spectators really, but the volunteers helped cheer the runners on. Nice, shiny, colorful medal at the finish! I would recommend this race to anyone... not the best if you're going for a PR, but a really nice marathon.

Great Race

This was my first Santa Clarita Marathon. The whole experience was great! What made this marathon great was the volunteers. The kids on the course handing out water and Gatorade were amazing. I, for one, really appreciate people taking time out of their Sunday to cheer on others and hand out drinks and Clif Blocks. I would highly recommend this marathon to others. I will definitely be back next year. I loved the close proximity of the Hyatt Hotel to the start and finish. A big thanks to the organizers for putting on such a great race.

Great smaller race!

Those looking for big crowds (whether on the course or on the sidelines) will be disappointed. But for those who care only (or mostly) about the running, this is a great one. Easy and convenient parking, race starts on time, no need to dodge slow runners or walkers who feel compelled to start at the front, flat course, and good odds the weather will cooperate. To the lady who gave me some Clif electrolyte cubes (or something like that) after mile 18: I was so focused on not falling apart that I forgot to thank you. So here's A HUGE THANKS to you!

The course is mostly on bike trails...

What I liked about this race was that everything was very convenient... from the hotel to the restaurants to the parking, everything was literally within a few steps away. Like a previous reviewer said, it seemed like all the kids in town volunteered for this race. Great crowd support. Concrete for a couple of miles around mile 17 was tough on the joints. A few out-and-backs made this course mentally challenging at times. Not terribly scenic... "peaceful" would be the best way I can describe the course. I finished dead last... that's probably the only reason I might be back for next year's race. Plus, as I mentioned earlier, it's hassle-free (make that two reasons). If I don't get in the lottery for NYC, I'll try to get my "revenge" on this course.

fun, but room for improvement

Staying at the host hotel 200 yards from the start was great. There are advantages to being able to use your own bathroom, and then stroll over to the start line. There were signs up all along the main road where the marathon would be run the next day, which I thought was great for getting people excited. The start was a little crowded as the half and full marathoners started together, but it quickly spread out. This course is pretty fast, the only "hills" coming from paseos (under freeways and roads) and overpasses, but it was a little warm for a longer race. It could start a little earlier. Pros: More than enough aid stations, well stocked, and a clearly marked (for the most part), relatively fast course. Great, small expo at the host hotel the day before. Cons: Not nearly enough food and drink at the finish, especially for a marathon. After two hours, they still had not figured out results (and nobody knew how much longer it would take), so I left without official results or awards (I'd get a nice plaque in the mail... a month later). The first 3-4 runners in the half were sent the wrong way two miles in (not sure if this was fixed)... and after seeing them go one way, we were directed another way. Very confusing. Otherwise, the course was well marked. Overall, it was an average effort. I'd do it again if I lived closer, but there are better run (and more scenic) marathons closer to Reno (Cowtown in Sacramento was great).

Great event with a relatively small field.

I think this is a great marathon event. I tend to have issues with dehydration and hyponatremia during endurance events. I ran both the 2006 and 2007 versions of this event (different courses) and did not have any severe health issues in either year, which indicates to me that there was sufficient nourishment out on the course. I thought the weather was excellent. I ran a 1:45 first half and a 1:33 second half. My guess is that folks who have issues in the second half of this or any other marathon event did not prepare adequately either in training or race day strategy or both. The only problem I had was near the end of the event when the course traverses a few narrow foot bridges. Coming off the last bridge, some half marathon walkers were walking two abreast and blocking that part of the last quarter mile where some people are trying pick up their pace.

Good run, but little shade

There was almost no shade, and for runners who take more than 4 hours to finish, this became a problem as the sun rose higher in the sky. (Only about three of the 26 miles were in shade.) Because this race started after the end of daylight savings time, the sun was high in the sky shortly after the race began. I agree with those comment writers who suggested an earlier start on race day. There were plenty of water stops, most offering both water and Gatorade. (By the end of the race, though, the Gatorade was as hot as the atmosphere.) By my count, there were more than 25 water stops, each one of which was welcome in the sun-baked heat. The volunteers were cheerful and supportive. There were few spectators, but that doesn't bother me: I'm not a big fan of being cheered on by strangers.

Loved my 1st Santa Clarita Marathon

Initially, I was negative about the entire event, but after running my first Santa Clarita Marathon, I was totally blown away. I thought it was highly organized. The staff and volunteers were fabulous. Unlike other marathons, Santa Clarita had more than enough water and Gatorade and power gels to go around for all the runners during the race. Next year I know not to run with a Fuel Belt next time. The sad part was that there wasn't anymore Gatorade left when I approached the finish line. There were many hills, but not like the steep hills in San Francisco. Everything was convenient. The parking, the location, and the nearby restaurants. The runners shirts and medals were great too. Thanks Santa Clarita for making it a great event.

Great first timer course!

My husband and I chose this as our first marathon because we didn't want to run with 30,000 other people. It was fun to have the half marathoners with us for a while (they broke off at mile 13). The map was very detailed and easy to read and the course was well staffed and marked. There were tons of energetic volunteers, plenty of water, gatorade at every aid station after mile 3 and clif shots at mile 14 and 18. We only carried one extra gel to have at mile 9. There was no need to carry extra fluid which was very convenient. The course was well marked and getting to run on the passes was great. I was surprised that more residents weren't watching, though. It's a rare sight to see this go by your backyard. I'm also surprised there were only 346 runners in the full marathon. We were able to park in the structure directly next to the finish line. You were able to get there minutes before and leave right after. No shuttles and craziness here!!! Highly recommended - thanks!

Great small marathon

For those who wish to run a small marathon (<500 participants), Santa Clarita is a good one. The course is run mostly on bike trails along river beds but it is not monotonous. There also was a fun section on shaded paths through homes and over a few small bridges. I like the fact that the course has very few straight lines, meaning that you rarely have those moments where you look ahead and see and endless path you have to negotiate. The course went by fairly quickly as a result. Also the weather was quite pleasant. It did not get as hot as I expected and was a little chilly at the start. I wouldn't want to start this race earlier. I ran the half-marathon in 2006 and it was even colder at the start. For a small race, there were plenty of friendly volunteers providing water and gatorade. Given that there were some significant fires in the area recently, the volunteers should be commended.

Late start time, hot course, great volunteers.

I wish the race started at 6 a.m., which is more in accordance with the time of day many runners do their training. Part of the course goes through a hot, dry area, which made me think of the Gobi Desert. The area at the finish was confusing, especially for someone who has just run 3 hours, with two finish-line looking mats where I stopped running, only to be told to "keep running; you're not there yet" by spectators. I didn't see an actual "finish line" sign (although there may have been - I was too exhausted to be certain).

For those who love to run on asphalt trails

This was my 24th marathon but only my first Santa Clarita. I love the way the expo was at the Hyatt and the start and finish were less than 1/4 mile from the hotel. Staying at a Hyatt is always nice and they gave a great rate for marathoners with more than extended check out time. The people were helpful and courteous throughout the area, even though it is a small race. The 1/2 marathoners ran the first 12 miles with the full, which was nice to have the company. After the split it was sparse; at some points I didn't know if I had followed the right course and hoped I hadn't gotten lost, but there were signs up along the really confusing areas to look for and follow. I love trails so I really enjoyed the run. It got a little warm so the only recommendation I would make would be to start the race at 6 a.m. (being that it was the first day of daylight savings it was actually an 8 o'clock start). The water stops were more than ample with tons of friendly volunteers and cheering stations. I just wanted to get in one last marathon this year and Santa Clarita was a good fit for me since I live only an hour away.

Course Much Improved

The course for 2006 was much better than 2005, both because the San Francisquito Creek Trail was open and because the last few miles involved a return up the South Fork rather than the previous years' twist-and-turn around Valencia Glen Park. However, I'd still like to see less paseo. Could the final two miles continue up the South Fork under Valencia Blvd. and finish the same way the half marathon does, over Creekside and Magic Mountain Parkway rather than over the paseo bridges in Valencia and through the mall parking lot? Clif Blocks on the course were a nice touch. I'd paid $2/packet for the same things at the expo. Santa Ana winds really didn't help, particularly in the Mile 16-20 out and back along Soledad and the turnaround at Mile 23, but that's not the RD's fault. Start was well organized for the most part, though I did see a 5K person running with the half/full marathon runners (his fault, I think). Basically nothing left for the back-of-the-packers. And why was the clock stopped at 5:29? I finished in 5:51, which was where I expected to since I'd had knee surgery less than 4 months previously, but the clock was stopped. I would have preferred the photos to be accurate.

Favor Shirt, Medal, and Organization over Course

One aspect of the marathon that I was disappointed in is that the race director refuses day-of-race packet pick-up under all circumstances. I understand that it may create a small general inconvenience to the staff, but it can be immensely helpful to participants with extenuating circumstances. Considering the race packet pick up site wasn't formally announced until two weeks before the event, the full marathon field is about 300 runners, and the exposition/packet pick up is only one day long, my request didn't seem that unreasonable. In my view the fact that the packet pick-up was at the Hyatt hotel in Valencia the day before the event is more than a coincidence. The exposition was relatively small, with general sports merchandise vendors that gave out samples ranging from cut-up energy bar and gel samples to bottled water. The packet pick-up was promptly at the announced 9 a.m. start time, though vendors inside the building were set-up sometime before that. Outside in the hall, various free medical diagnoses were available, and a very nice lime-green drawstring "City of Santa Clarita" nylon bag was provided for filling out a simple visitor's survey. Former USC cross country coach and LA Police Chief Pat Connelly gave one of the best speeches on body bio-mechanics that I have ever gotten at a marathon seminar. The marathon itself took place on city streets, bike and footpaths, and ran near some apartment complexes. The first mile had the only hill of significance but was made more difficult because of the existence of traffic cones blocking the second lane. The field was still congested at this early stage, and it created a bottleneck. The only way to avoid that (then) would have been running left of the cones, which would have been off the official course. There was one other tight section between six and eight, but otherwise fine. I didn't find the course particularly scenic, but I was probably just concentrating on the finish (the temperature during my final hour of the race was between 77 and 78 degrees). I discovered that several miles of hard paved-street running could be avoided by running on a grass "island" paralleling the sidewalk between miles seven and nine. The school girl cheerleaders were out in full force, energetic and enthusiastic. Prominent markers existed each mile along with Gatorade and water (and signs delineating the beverages). Around mile 20 volunteers had went as far as lining up energy gels along the top of fence posts to avoid any bad hand-offs and runners were able to self serve. The bands seemed to be positioned very tactically along the course (such as at the top of underpass climbs), and played good, entertaining, motivational music. In general the entertainment was more frequent and better than what I expected; the townfolk do seem to know something is going on (though you won't experience big-city crowds here). I don't know if it was because the race t-shirts were so bright cherry red that they were more noticeable, but I don't recall seeing a race where more participants actually wore them during the event. The beautiful technical shirt with three-color race-logo shoes was complimented by a nice race-logo finisher's medal that clearly distinguished the accompanying half marathon race from the full, both in words and the color of the suspension ribbon. I wasn't particularly impressed with the post-race food, which included orange slices, flavored bottled water and pretzels.

Beautiful, fun, and fabulous!!

I was in town from Wisconsin and couldn't pass up the opportunity to run. I am so grateful I did, because it was the best race I've run so far, and not because it was my fastest, but because of the beautiful, flat, fun course. The spectators were fabulous, as were the kids handing out the water at each and every mile - how could you not smile and enjoy this race?! This race was really well organized and really one I'd recommend to anyone thinking of participating. They did a fantastic job!! Thank you for an amazing time!! Leah B. Wauwatosa, WI

Well-organized small-town race, convoluted course

This race was very well organized. The Hyatt hotel is literally around the corner from both start and finish. Parking was well-planned. Aid stations and post-race food were amply staffed and supplied, even for back-of-the-packers like me. The volunteers and spectators were great; it seemed like the whole town came out to help and cheer the runners. Even coach Pat Connelly was out on the course offering advice and encouragement. The course is a little hilly in places, and has a lot of weird twists and turns. Fortunately, there were volunteers to point the way in all but one of them. The first half was pretty easy, but the last six miles were especially tough, with two miles of dirt trail being kicked up by strong Santa Ana winds, and the paseo bridges. The mid-80s temperatures this year compounded the challenge. The encouragement of the volunteers and spectators, along with copious quantities of water, Gatorade, and Clif Blocks, got me to the finish. If you like well-organized, small races and can weather the heat and wind of Southern California's Santa Ana season, this race is a good choice for a fall marathon and a better choice for a half.

AWESOME RACE!!!

This race had the best organization of any marathon I've run. There was plenty of parking, and the garage was literally right next to the start/finish line. Aid station support was great!! The course was flat and fun... with lots of trail running. Running up, over, and down the freeway overpasses in the final mile was challenging, and made crossing the finish line even sweeter. Weather was ideal for running. This race is a "must run" for all Southern California runners.

Nice Scenic Marathon

Mostly on bike paths, scenic, and some rolling hills at the start. Volunteer groups were really well attended, might have had every kid in town at a stop somewhere. Last 3 miles are pretty through a residential area on a bike path, but something like 8 bike bridges - up and over roads - in the last 2-3 miles wore on me. Great finish announcing, massage, and food in a neat location town center.

1st marathon, excellent race weather, so-so course

Though it was my first marathon and I don't have others to compare it to, I certainly have some critiques. The race opens pretty straight forward, but eventually, it gets a little sketchy, interrupted, and quite boring. The markings were decent, I never felt lost, but you had to pay attention (I've already read one review of someone running a 16-mile 'half marathon'). They tried to keep all the miles nearby, so many times you are running over ground you have already covered. In 1 case you ran 3 miles out, circled a cone, and ran those three miles back. Another issue with this race is that you have to repeatedly cross over highways via bridges, which means you need to make an abrupt turn and ascent to get to all the bridges, which ruins rhythm. I also was less than impressed with the water stations. I prefer to drink every two miles, but when I went to grab some Gatorade at a hydration station, the cup was less than half full. When it's late in the race and you need some sugar, you don't want to be handed a cup with 4 oz. of Gatorade, especially considering not all of it gets in your mouth sometimes! This forced me to grab for fluids much more than I planned on, which slowed my finishing time. I really enjoyed the little local 2-3 person bands that were scattered sporadically in the race course. It's great to see some locals take the time to entertain the runners, way to go. Some compliments I have are, first of all, the Hyatt hotel. Great hotel, very accommodating, and literally right next to the starting line, not to mention the expo was right in their grand ballroom. I had originally planned on running NY, but when I saw on TV that morning all the runners sitting on the grass, just waiting around in the cold for the race to finally start, I was more than happy to be in sunny Santa Clarita, knowing the starting line was just a short walk away from my hotel room. I also really appreciated some of the nice people I ran into during the race, and who can forget 'Barefoot Ted'? Hats off to him. All in all, a decent marathon. If you're looking for a small, convenient, hometown-type marathon with fantastic race weather, maybe even your first marathon, this is a good one, but if you are looking for a great course layout with scenery and speed, this is not the race for you.

friendly, hometown atmosphere

This was my fifth SCM and first on the new course. While I really liked the starting 10-mile descent on the old course, I actually enjoyed the new, flat, loopy course too. Very strong support from the Girl Scouts and others was wonderful. The views of the surrounding mountains were spectacular.

Great Organization and Spectators

The first 20 miles of the course were fine. Good spectator support and I had no problems figuring out where the course splits were between the 1/2 and full marathon. The last 5 to 6 miles of the course were tough. A long stretch along a deserted riverbed on a bike trail with the only people at the aid stations. The pedestrian bridges the last 3 miles are tough. Good water and Gatorade stations - every mile with great volunteers and enthusiasm. This was my first marathon in 28 years but I'll be back. Great small marathon.

Well intended but awful course

My third SCM. Start's good, well supported, plenty of porta-potties, started on time. The first few miles are easy. The problem with this race is the number of convoluted twists and turns that the course designer uses in order to have the half and full meet exact distance requirements and also end in the same place. The bit where both miles 9 and 12 run southbound on the San Francisquito Trail and the faster half marathoners have to elbow slower runners out of the way is terribly confusing. I would rather see more of the race on roads than blending two segments of the race together and expecting runners to understand the confusing directions. Also, as many others have mentioned, I would be much happier if the paseo bridges didn't come at the end. I'd rather have the paseo portions earlier in the race and do some road running at miles 23-26 than have those bridges in the last 10K. Volunteers were great and the shirt is a nice one. The only request for future years would be ice chips for all the aid stations. One station (mile 24) brought their own bags of ice chips to hand out and those were great on a hot day.

Twists and Turns with Some Ups and Downs

It was a great day to run: Cloudy and cool for most of the time. The course was changed from last year. I'm not sure it was for the better. There did seem to be a bit of confusion with one juncture of the race where if you weren't paying attention, you would have missed a mile or so of the course. The only other 'minor' complaint is all the bridges to cross in the last few miles. My legs were fairly hammered already, and then to go up and down the bridges with a few 'U' turns tossed in didn't help. Other than that, it's definitely one of the more enjoyable local marathons around. Everyone is very helpful. The race organization is excellent. I highly recommend this marathon.

Where are my results?!

I had such a great time Sunday at Santa Clarita's 1/2 Marathon. Everything was great, although I do agree w/ the course being a little confusing at the 9-mile mark. One guy trying to explain whether to split or not for the 1/2 or full marathon did not quite work, especially when I had my iPod on full blast. But, I did figure it out somehow. Anyway, I'm trying to find the 1/2 marathon results but all I can find are those for the full.

Southern California Marathon Gem

To understand why the Santa Clarita Marathon is a piece of gem or to appreciate its beauty, you have to run it. Congratulations to all who ran, organized and volunteered! Great, great race. It had a small-town feeling to it. Priceless! Keep up the good work, Santa Clarita!

Course designed by Jackson Pollock

I ran the half, but I figure since I ended up running 16 miles or so instead of 13.1, I figure I ran somewhere in between a half-marathon and a full. Unless you have someone to follow closely (which is not always an option,) you need a map, a GPS, and a compass to follow this course. To say it's 'confusing' would be an understatement. The u-turns are very annoying too. After mile 8, the half runners are supposed to run another loop, then go straight at the same intersection. This is confusing enough as it is, but the half course joins the full right after that, so you spend that part dodging slower marathon runners. At that point, remembering something like, 'go straight where you turned before,' is difficult, because you're tired and surrounded by people in a different race on a different course. The volunteers are great. I think this event has it's heart in the right place, but the course is truly awful. After doing 125% of the half, I will definitely not be doing the full... or the half again.

A Great Race With Some Hills

The race was wonderful. The course was incredibly well marked with cones, yellow tape, and/or volunteers at every corner. The aid stations were spaced every mile and staffed with friendly and energetic, costumed volunteers. The after race festival was well planned but dampened by the rain that began about 3 hours after the race started. Post-marathon showers were provided at a nearby, fancy athletic club and included warm towels. My only less-than-positive thought was the course terrain. Coming from pancake-flat Dallas, the hills of Santa Clarita challenged me. They are in NO way steep hills, but they seemed to be a constant during the race. But as the marathon starts and finishes in the nearly the same place, what goes up does comes down and the net elevation change is near zero. A few hill repeat workouts in preparation is all I was missing. A good race with excellent planning and execution.

Just not a great marathon

The excitement and organization that should be part of a marathon were not there. In comparison to to the 20+ marathons I have run, this one is at or near the bottom of my list. There were several points on the course where I was completely unsure what direction to go (no markings and no people to guide). Having not run Santa Clarita since 1999, expecting improvement and paying $63.00, I would not recomend this one.

Much Improved!

This was my 6th SCM and one of my favorites. The new course change is a definite improvement over the previous years. No killer hills at the 16 mile mark! Even though it's not flat, it still keeps you interested with the ever changing terrain (other than running along Soledad Canyon Road). The bridges at the end are a nuisance, but then again, any hill around 24 miles looks steeper (and feels steeper!) than it really is. The volunteers were great and the race folks seemed to have everything under control. A great marathon for first-timers... and for that matter, many-timers too!

Good small-town marathon

Fairly well organized. I liked the old route that started in Canyon Country, rather than the out-and-back current incarnation. And there's no way a loop course can be a downgrade -- think the poster was referring to the old course which did have a net downhill. Spectators enthusiastic for the most part. No complaints on the aid stations. A couple of very steep hairpin bends, and the paseo bridges at the end were a challenge. Would have been nice to know exactly where the finish line was so we could park closer to that. Kudos for lots and lots of porta-potties! Could have used water at the start line rather than coffee only. Course a good mix of trails and roads. The camber on Orchard Village at mile 23 is severe; is there any way to reroute that bit? Weather was perfect and temps good. Nice small hometown marathon.

I had a great time!

I am a resident of Santa Clarita and I enjoyed this race tremendously. I run here 3-4 times a week and am familiar with the area. I had a bit of trepidation with regard to the new marathon path and it turned out to be great! Yes, there were a few hair pin turns and a trip through an apartment complex parking lot but these were not a problem for me at all. I hope more people come out and enjoy the beautiful trails (paseos) of our beautiful city. The people along the route were very encouraging and friendly. My favorite part was that the race started promptly at 7am. This is great for all kinds of weather. With the excitement of the race and adrenalin of anticipation, it is a good thing that the start time was not delayed. Good job to all of the marathon planners. Thank you Pala! And thank you Mayor Bob Kellar for ordering good running weather for race day.

2004 version is a much better course...

The new course is soooo much improved over the old course - the route now starts out at the Town Center in the streets then traverses through the paseo system which Valencia is known for. It is a fairly fast route, though it is not all a downgrade as the sponsors describe it as. The worst part is the end where they have you run on walkway overpasses 1/2 mile before the finish line. Those inclines are steep and narrow and just plain dumb for a marathon race. Other than that, it was a great course and a lot of enthusiasm from the people that came out and supported it.

Nice 'Smallish' Marathon

Nice size race, well organized from the expo the day before the race, the staging area at the start and throughout to the finish line. All around good experience. Relatively flat and fast course. Even the weather cooperated and was well suited for a marathon; rain came about 3 hours into the race but it was moderate and in a sense refreshing. If you live in or are visiting the area and are looking for a low-key, all-around good marathon - this is worth a run.

Need to improve course

Running through the housing estates is absolutely horrible. Its easy to get lost, even if you've run the race before. On the plus side, it's fast, well-organized and sensibly starts at 7am (unlike Long Beach & LA Marathons where they try to kill people by starting late and making people run in 85+ degree heat).

Not a whole lotta good about this one.

From a runner who loves small races: there are a whole lot of better ones out there if you're looking for a small race with good organization and beautiful scenery. The scenery just wasn't there, and the start of the race was terribly dry, windy and unsheltered. Thanks to the few fans who came out and put out a great effort. Good organization... would recommend a change in the start, and not having the finish line in sight of the full marathon course. I won't be back again!

Great Local Marathon

Santa Clarita was my 9th marathon, and I've not run the same marathon twice. I rate SCM in the top third of my marathon experiences. The start was the worst part--in a gravel pit, windy, cool, and a late start, not good when runners are anxious as it is. The marathon course was varied; there was plenty of water, gatorade and other supplements; enough porta potties, good traffic control; crowd was good for a small marathon; refreshments better than most. The split at mile 13 was tough when the half marathoners were finishing and us marathoners had another 13 miles to go! The finish was great with my family waiting for me at the end of the chute--something you won't get to experience in the large marathons. I highly recommend this marathon.

organization good, crowds meager but enthusiastic

Santa Clarita was my first marathon ever! Though I found it difficult to walk the next day, I'm completely hooked! It was an amazing experience and I can't wait to run another! As a novice, I chose this course because of the downhill start and the close proximity to LA. It began fast and easy. Crowds were spirited as were the runners. However, around mile 13 everyone vanished! I soon discovered why. Around mile 14 or so, the course took a strange jaunt through residents' backyards for several miles. Though shady, the course was dreadfully boring and hard follow. The race staff was terrific though as were the cute pre-teen spectators dressed in their Halloween costumes cheering me on! After the jog around the neighborhood, the hill was a welcome challenge. It felt like climbing Mount Whitney after an easy path through suburbia! The flat switch back towards the end was a nice idea though the area wasn't picturesque and the spectators were virtually non-existant. Plenty of H2O to the finish line though!! Overall, it was a great experience. Thank you Santa Clarita!!

good marathon - could be great

I've run the marahon twice & have enjoyed it, setting a PR both times. However, the meandering through the pathways in the housing estate is the worst section of any marathon I've run. Not only is there no spectators, but it is unclear where to go at several points. If there was any way to eliminate this portion & the hill that follows, the marathon would be fantastic. The organization is top notch.

A crampingly good time

Once again the organizers did extremely well. The only snafu was the morning 'traffic jam' parking. This delayed the start time. The weather could have been a bit better. Windy and cool turning windy and warm. Other than that, I enjoyed the course change from last year. Thank you for not taking us over the 5 fwy. I was on my way to a SCM PR until my legs totally cramped after the 22 mile mark. I still managed a respectable time. While waiting for my friend to come in I got to know the race director and some of his staff. Very nice people. I highly recommend this race.

Very well organized

I ran the half marathon and virtually every aspect of this race was well organized. Everything from the shuttle buses to street closures to water stations went off without a hitch. There was Gatorade at each water station and most of the volunteers were kids groups which added a lot of enthusiasm. The course wasn't particularly scenic but it was mostly downhill and much of it was on a riverside bike trail (ok, the river is one of Southern California's classic concrete-line rivers) which kept street and lane closures to a minimum. The course was nice and fast. I hadn't trained and still came within 4 minutes of my PR.

There are only 450 entrants. The course is great, It was far from my PR. (I ran a marathon 28 days prior.) The race didn't feel like a race at all, epecially through the pathway at the townhouse community. Although the fans are light, but I'm careless. The aid station volunteer are SUPER, they are so CUTE :) Only complaints, the mile 4 maker was missing, and there was neither clocks nor callers at the mile markers. No split time on the 13.1 marker for the full marathon runners; timing system was poor! :( Since the race is so small, it feel like a family atmosphere. :)

Very Nice Marathon

Great course with first 13 miles downhill. If you want to set a PR in a half-marathon, this is one to consider. Very well organized, water/gatorade stations at least every mile and Carb-Boom, which is the best gel on the market. They did have a few issues this year, though, with delayed shuttle buses and a lack of drinks available at the finish. One event person said that Pepsi dropped out the night before the race and left everyone dry! There were tons of food vendors at the end but no drinks! Great local support, but not a lot of folks along the course. Course seemed very well considered with paseos, tree-lined streets, and fairly flat. I highly recommend this event to anyone.

Great hassle-free organization, so-so course

Very nicely organized marathon. (Why would anyone put up with the hassles of mega-marathons?...) Water/Gatorade stations more than adequate, lots of volunteers for a race of that size. The one thing I didn't like was waiting amid dust 'tornadoes' in the start area. Maybe the organizers should look for a better starting point. As for the rest of the course, I thought there were too many hills after the mid-point. Better to design a course in which the challenges are in the earlier part of the race. Hardly anyone along the course (other than the volunteers), but I couldn't care less.

Excellent, well organized,downhill half-marathon

All I have to say is that this was one of the best half marathons I have participated in. Everything was well organized from parking (no fee) to busing (no fee) to computer chips (many international Marathons don't use them such as California international marathon on Dec 2, 2001 in Sacramento), to great warm breakfast post race, plenty of seating, convenient bus ride back, beautiful long sleeve tshirts, Excellent course for PR. Well-organized, pleasant smaller race

Gently rolling course with lots of downhill early; mostly on paved paseos (paths, not on the road) and through some neighborhoods. Several stretches with no spectators (hence the 3), but plenty of people parked in lawn chairs by the course in the neighborhood sections. Terrific water stops EVERY MILE (!!) well-staffed by the loudly cheering scouts (both varieties), and miles clearly marked. Only bad parts: not much healthy food at the end - bagels would be nice; the course winds through an industrial area in last few miles, with few spectators, though the loud band was great. Weather was perfect - 60ish, overcast with some drizzle. Nice finish medal, great t-shirt. Very friendly locals made me glad I braved LAX and the LA traffic to get there. (it's far enough outside LA to not look like a big city)

good course change

I'd like to thank the race officials for scheduling the overcast/rainy weather. They did a perfect job(even though It could have been a few degrees cooler). Please do it again next year. The course change was excellent. I really enjoyed NOT running through Magic Mountain. Also, the Newhall Park area was a good choice for the finish area festivities. Even though the spectators were sparse along much of the course, it was more than made up for by the few that came out! The volunteers at the aid stations were great. The overall marathon atmosphere was very upbeat. My only complaint was at the finish area... one of the food stands was told to shut down by 10am. I happened to cross the finish line at 11, so I missed out (presumably) on the good food and was left with only hot dogs! Overall, nicely organized, good weather, and the right amount of course tweaks to keep things running smoothly!

This is the second year I have run this marathon. I really enjoy the diversity of the course. You cover a lot of different terrain and everything is very clearly marked. If only they could make the last 5-6 miles a little less drab; going through the industrial area makes it hard to keep motivated.

Great marathon for beginners!

I really loved Santa Clarita´s Marathon. It was my first and the organization, course, competitors and spectators made me feel really confident. I am not american and had to travel from Mexico City to run but I felt since the beginning as if I were at home. Thanks for this great experience! I will certainly recommend you here in Mexico: Viva el Maraton de Santa Clarita!

A First Class Act

Very few spectators along this route, but super enthusiastic volunteer group. The organization of this race couldn't be better. Comfortable tour buses shuttle you to the start line (no school buses here) where a heated tent awaits you. Once there, food, coffee, water, fruit, chairs, and potties are plentiful. Very impressive. Water and gatorade every mile! Great finish line party, nice finishers medal. All this for $30!!! I will definitely be back next year. The course is above average for speed, I was about a minute off my PR.

Excellent Event, a definite run for marathoners

I've run in both half-marathon's this event has offered, and I ran 8 of the final 13 miles with my dad (who ran the full marathon). The first half of the course is very inviting as it's downhill for 12 of the 13 miles. There are many spectators lining the route, offering support to everybody. It is very organized as all bags are transported w/o mishaps from the starting line to a designated area after the finish. The marathon course continues along more of the cities sites going through parks and by Magic Mountain. Not a lot of shade though on the first half of the marathon as it runs alongside the Santa Clara 'River'. Half-marathon introduced 2 years ago, and looks like it will be around a while. This event also had a 5K and a kiddie K, so people with all types of talent are accommodated. I'm 17 and ran a 1:40:20 in 1999 and a 1:25:12 in 2000, and I look forward to doing ever better this year!

loved it as a half-marathoner!

The S.C. Marathon was great because it was for the most part downhill so that's a definite bonus. It was my 2nd year running it. I ran the half-marathon and I think more people my age (13) should run it. It's an excellent experience and it's very organized.

Great spirit, good support!

Food at the expo would be nice and more booths, but overall I like the 'smallness' and community feel of this event.
