Disappointing - what it used to be

The Towpath Marathon has been on my marathon bucket list for awhile. I was greatly disappointed in the new course and it's a huge shame that this race is no longer completely within the National Park. If you want fall foliage, a shady tree covered route, crushed limestone and a fast flat BQ course this is no longer your race. The race started in the flats near downtown Cleveland. You had to pay to park and some parking lots had very long lines to pay a machine before the race. A lot of people didn't have enough time to pay to park, wait in line for the restroom and start the race on time. The course had hills in the first four and last four miles and only a short stretch was on crushed limestone. The course goes through steelyard commons, industrial areas and you see more graffiti then fall foliage. Most people ran the half and after the turnaround there weren't many runners on course. Very little spectators on course to help motivate you as well. Overall it was a huge disappointment and it was obvious it was a low budget race.

Flat and Fast - Except For The Bridges

When I first learned about this marathon, the course went through the Cuyahoga National Park. It looked like a point-to-point through the Park, along the Ohio & Erie Canal. One other thing up front, this race organization - as with many larger events - requires permits from different organizations in order to put on their marathon event. One required permit was from the National Park. And after 27 years, the Park declined to issue the permit for the marathon course to go through the Park. And to me personally, I wanted to enjoy the experience of the course going through the Park in the autumn. I think in mid-July they still did not have this issue resolved, so registration had not yet been opened. I dialoged through e-mail with a race official named Kathy, and that helped me understand the frustration that they were dealing with as an organization. But with little time to determine an alternate course, and still allow runners a course along the Canal, they devised an alternate course. Our hats are off to the organizers to put together an alternate course with little time to spare. The course started in Cuyahoga Heights where there is a Visitor's Center for the Canal. From the parking lot there, the marathon course followed a road that led us on to the Towpath. We headed north to the Harvard Ave. trailhead. There, we did a course reversal and headed south to the Rockside trailhead. From there, another course reversal and we returned to the Harvard Ave. trailhead. Then there was a smaller loop over that overlaid ground that we had already covered. Completing that loop, we returned to the Rockside trailhead again, where the finish line was located. It was all asphalt trail - except for the concrete bridge structures. And the way they had the course laid out, we passed the same hydration stations multiple times. That made it feasible to have fewer volunteers and still offer a lot of options to the runners to get fluids and carbs. Most of the course had shade, but there were some sunny spots too. It was a cold start - I would guess the temperature being in the low 40's and it warmed to about 60 by mid-day. It was a beautiful autumn day for a marathon. The finish line routine was a bit awkward. At the actual finish line, there were the typical medical staff, fruits and fluids available. But the post-race was at Quaker Steak - which was perhaps a half-mile away. Buses (shuttles) were running about every 10-15 minutes to take runners to the post-race. They had burritos there for the runners, one free beer, along with cookies and red licorice. Then, if you parked at the start-line, you had to catch another shuttle, to get a ride back to your car. They were supposed to be running until 1:00 p.m. I do know one guy skipped the post-race and rode the shuttle back to get his car because he was afraid of the service stopping at noon, stranding him - and it was several miles back to the Visitor's Center parking lot. I cannot be too critical of this set-up. They did the best they could with little time to prepare for the details. As far as I could tell, everything worked as best as it could have. They did have a string band there playing music, but they were just finishing up their last song about the time I showed up, and then put their instruments away. From information I received earlier from the race organizers, it sounds like this year's course was just for this year, and by next year they hope to have a new improved course in place to use for the foreseeable future. We will have to wait and see how things unfold.

Great marathon in all regards

I ran the older version in the early 1990's and had high expectations. As I was in the area, I wanted to run it again. Happily, 2015 exceeded all expectations. From the start, communication was outstanding, even when I could not get my number as I was traveling. Organization was excellent with a good start close to parking. The course is flat, fast, and quite scenic, with plenty of very enthusiastic and helpful volunteers. Course directions were clear, and when needed, traffic control was perfect. Wherever spectators could get to the course, they did, and they supported me mightily. Finally, as I was running slowly, I was really pleased to find lots of spectators still there to cheer for me at the finish. Food and drink were plentiful, and the medal will be among my most cherished. Given the opportunity to run this marathon, it should be done in a heartbeat!! My thanks to all who made it such a memorable experience.

No traffic to worry about!

This was a beautiful tree-lined course. The towpath was flat and fast. Great start down the only hill. Enjoyed the finish with craft beers and music. Emcee was very entertaining.

Fastest trail marathon in the country

The crushed limestone towpath course lends itself to be one of, if not, the fastest trail marathons in the country. If there was a curb on the course...it would be the highest elevation. Rivals Chicago or Rotterdam from a speed perspective. Just as important, it has to be one of the top 3 beautiful marathons in the country (behind Big Sur and Lake Tahoe). The setting (in a national park) and the time of year (fall) provides great colors and perfect weather (dry and cool temps).

Beautiful course!

The Towpath marathon is run on a flat, crushed limestone path next to the river. Tree-covered, fall race. Fog coming off river, water flowing over rocks, leaves falling down, old ruins of locks, just beautiful! Secluded path, so no spectators except at crossing roads. But the park and race volunteers get 5 stars - so friendly! Host hotel: Hampton Inn is newly remodeled and were very welcoming and accommodating to those of us in the race. The shuttle picked us up in the lobby and dropped us off at start. We missed the last shuttle back because had a late finisher in our group and the race volunteers made sure our group of 10 got back to the hotel. Now THAT is above and beyond! Unique artwork on shirt and medal. I give this race a 10 out of 10.

Beautiful, well-supported race

I have run this marathon for the last two years (2013, 2014). It is absolutely beautiful, very flat, and a perfect size for my taste. There are portions that are pretty quiet and you can just appreciate the beauty. Aid stations seemed to come more often than every two miles. The volunteers are fabulous.

Great course and scenery, well organized

The tree-lined flat course makes this a beautiful race. I have run the Towpath five times and it still retains the feel of a smaller race, which is more enjoyable than big city courses. Many thanks to the volunteers and the organizers who did a great job.

FLAT, BEAUTIFUL, AND WELL-ORGANIZED

Course: One word: FLAT! The residents in the Cleveland-Akron area are so lucky to have this miles-long trail available to them for walking/running/biking. And in October, the course is just breath-taking drifting fog, falling leaves, dappled sunshine, rushing water, and historic landmarks! Organization: This race is well-organized from packet pick-up to the post-race party. The website and Facebook page were informative and helpful. The mile markers were accurate, and the aid stations were well-stocked and well-manned. I particularly liked the Go Browns aid station and the Candy Corn aid station! The website and the race director provided severe warnings about traffic jams on race morning and about the need to arrive early. I stayed at one of the race hotels that provided a shuttle to the start line, so I had absolutely no issues at all getting to the start. Fans: This is the perfect race to get into the zone and march off the miles. There are plenty of fans at the road crossings and lots of friendly aid-station workers. But in between, there are some quiet patches that allow you to run within yourself and breathe life in. Special thanks to the volunteers who braved the cold morning start to come out to support us! And a special shout-out to the National Park Service personnel who were on hand to assist! Overall, a fabulous race in a fantastic setting! Kudos to the race director and his crew!

DO THIS RACE!

I ran this marathon last Sunday as my 32nd. I LOVED everything about it. I read up on this race here at marathonguide before we signed up, and the reviews were very accurate. The expo was small and efficient for a race this size. We stayed at the Hampton Inn and took the shuttle on race morning. I would not hesitate to drive my car to the start next time, as there was ample parking there. I have seldom seen such nice people, everyone was cheerful and very helpful. One person in particular (Barb - a member of the Towpath board of directors) discovered that 4 of us had missed the last shuttle back to the hotels, and gave us a ride (about 6 miles) back. A very nice lady to say the least. OK, so you want more race details. The course is mostly on crushed limestone trails, with some on plank trails through the beautiful marshy areas. The majority in through some very scenic and shaded areas. It is also flat. The autumn colors were GLORIOUS! Not many spectators (trail run), but those who were there and EVERYONE at the many waterstops were people I'd love to have as my neighbors. And the waterstops seemed to be every 1.2 miles. If you do not need thousands of spectators (why would you?), and you are not interested in running in huge packs of humanity (been there, done that), this race is for you!! I would definitely do it again.

Great stunningly scenic small marathon

An absolutely great event! The course is the main attraction, mostly level, mostly crushed limestone surface. Didn't mind the 2 out and backs, at all. The organizers are very well prepared and do a great job of communicating. Nothing special about the small expo, but it was convenient. The nature of the course does not allow for great numbers of spectators, but volunteers (and other runners) were great. The spectators at the finish were very enthusiastic. I hope this marathon stays small. A great alternative to the big city marathons, as well as easy on the joints. Host hotel did a great job with the pasta meal and everything else. I'll certainly be back.

Beautiful Fall Race; Nice Flat course

I had heard that this was a nice fall race; so i went for it because it was local....the race did not disappoint! Pros Hidden Gem of a course in the Cleveland/Akron Ohio, area....i dont think many even know there is a National Park in this part of Ohio.....but there is; and most of the course is in the park....perfect fall weather, amazing fall colors and nature...outstanding! -enthusiastic volunteers -hot tub (and a cold tub) at the finish line! -easy pack pickup Cons -traffic on a little 2 lane road to get to the the parking lots morning of the race took awhile -fairly standard, nothing too exceptional about the finisher medal or shirt given

Beautiful Fall Race

This was a beautiful fall event with a lovely course running through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. We put together a full weekend of activities thirty minutes away in Cleveland and also drove all around the park to major sites like ledges, caves, beaver marshes, and waterfalls, which involved very minimal trail hikes from the parking areas to each featured wilderness attraction . A trip worth taking! This small event with 500 marathoners has been combined with a half marathon and 10k to expand participation. The races take place in such a way that congestion on the trail course is completely avoided, a masterful planning success by the race organizers. The expo was full of friendly people and easy to get to and from. Finish area had plentiful food, including Subway sandwiches and beer for those inclined. The tech shirt was high quality, as was the finisher medal which had a simple design that was well executed. I highly recommend the race, which I completed in 2011 and will participate in again. Thank you race organizers for providing a beautiful, colorful trail race that was expertly executed. Well worth doing the Towpath Marathon!

Great surface; flat course; beautiful scenery

I thoroughly enjoyed this marathon. I find the flat, packed limestone surface to be easy on the legs. The national park is pretty in October. There are plenty of other runners, but without the crowding of city marathons, and there were lots of places for friends and family to watch and cheer. I would prefer a 7 am start, but I expect to run this marathon again in the next few years.

Very beautiful marathon for those who love nature

The out-and-back course was great for those with families wanting to watch/help. Nice separation between full and half marathon. I'm not a big fan of HEED, but I just had my family give me bottles of my own fluids along the course. The limestone path was awesome to run on and the scenery was awesome. I will be back for another run next year.

This is a terrific marathon!

This is my favorite marathon. The course is as beautiful and as picturesque as any you'll find. I love running on the limestone path and being able to view the canal and the ruins of the canal locks and the trees! The volunteers are helpful and friendly. This course is for purists who love to run and don't care about glitz and give-aways. I've run all but two of them over the years and it just keeps getting better and better. If you need spectators and bands this wonderful course isn't for you. No race is perfect and this isn't either but there are no major glitches. I strongly recommend it. I'll be back next year!

Good race, but could be better organized

My half marathon started with my bib not being there even though it was mailed and received back in June. That got taken care of quickly though. Expo was very interesting, to put it into words. Very few booths for an event of decent size. Half marathon started at least 10 minutes late and we couldn't hear a thing because the speakers were placed behind a truck that was blocking the sound. Course is great - very flat. Plenty of aid stations. Water was good; HEED was horrible (very diluted, and it shocked me a few times because I thought it was going to be water). Spectators at finish line and Highland Road were great. The finish line, in general, can be summed up in one word: HORRIBLE. Keep the families out of that area and back at least 100 feet. I crossed the line and 10 feet later there were people telling me not to move so they could get a family picture. Food wasn't great. A very crammed finish line area that should have been handled better. Other than that, I could see myself doing it again, maybe even the half.

loved the scenery

Only reason why organization was rated 4 stars was because I registered in advance and came from Canada, St. Catharines, ON. When I picked up my race kit, I was told that there were no small shirts left after I pre-registered my shirt size. I am a tiny person and the medium was way too big, so I took no shirt; the person behind me actually took the medium. This was very disappointing, and it's a long drive to come and support your marathon and to go home with no shirt. I loved the course, and the aid stations and spectators were fabulous.

Beautiful course; perfect for first-timers

The Towpath Marathon was perfect for first-timers like myself. It's flat with a mostly crushed limestone surface... easy on the joints. The volunteers were very supportive and friendly, and the event was well organized. My only complaints were the lack of clocks on the course (just at the finish line), that the beer was gone by the time I finished (just over 4 hours), and that we did not get the advertised "tech" shirt. I agree that the lack of spectator spots hurts your stamina, but that is just part of the course. The finish line was also a bit short. Lastly, kudos to the organizers for getting off three events at the same time on such a small track!

Seriously consider this for your first marathon

This was my first marathon ever. I am 59 years-old and wondered if I could even finish. I am so glad I picked this as the one since the trail was flat, very scenic, and extremely well-equipped with everything that I needed along the way. I am not competitive, so enjoying myself during the challenge was the top priority. I cannot say enough "good" about this marathon. Everything about it was top quality!!!!

Great, small, uncrowded race

Very good, tranquil, end-of-the-year marathon without crowded roadways. Although the heat got the best of me (no PR compared to the previous year), I still am glad to have run it. Biggest need: REAL FOOD after the race. I was hypoglycemic at the end, and pasta, steak or chicken would have been great EVEN if I have to pay. I am sure some restaurant owner in the town could set up a big grill and then the popcorn would have seem great as dessert. Looking forward to the next year. Well done.

Flat, fast, easy on the body run - not much else.

If you want to run a fast marathon - and are not looking for the glamour or excitement of a "city" marathon - the Towpath is for you. This was a PR marathon for me and I loved the course - but it was all business. Arrive for the race, warm-up, run the trail, have a beer at the end, and go home. No excitement, no bands, no entertainment, no big crowds - the trappings of the big-city marathons. All in all, a very satisfying for the pure running.

Best scenery and one of the most organized

The reason I gave the race a 4 out of 5 is that the start of the race is congested due to the fact that you start out of a narrow parking lot. We were at a slow jog for a good 5 minutes. My other problem was that I had ordered a small shirt but they had given the smalls away by the time I picked my packet up; so order more shirts or make sure that the people who ordered in advance get the shirt they signed up for. Other than that, this was, hands down, the race had the best course and best post-race fun!

Bucket list entry, and I'll do it again and again

Wonderful race in the Cuyahoga River National Park, a national treasure, at the peak of the fall leaf colors. Somehow a marathon, half-marathon (I ran the half but I know the whole length well), and 10K intertwined on the narrow Towpath without casualties, a phenomenal organization effort and clockwork planning. The organizers found parking spaces for thousands in the nearby ski slopes. Be prepared for some walking to the starting lines and arrive early. I've been a local for a year but was still somewhat confused in finding my way from the parking lot to the start. Great choice of finish line at the Boston Store Nat'l Park station. It must be understood that the area is one of the most scenic in the USA, but there are space limitations. Surely there will be more instructions and directions next year because this race is becoming nationally popular, and it well should be. Can't wait to run it again, and many thanks to the National Park Service for allowing it!

All in all, I loved it!

Parking was not so great and there were no garbage cans! Seriously, folks! Put a few garbage cans out at the two starting points. I had to carry my trash for 20 minutes. This being said, the rest was great! The people, location, registration, course provisions for runners, etc., was all really good!!

Pleasant Race

Basically two long out-and-backs along a pretty, flat trail, which is very narrow and congested for the first 2-3 miles. Plenty of aid stations with water, Hammer Gel, and, unfortunately, HEED. I like the signs alerting runners to upcoming toilets and aid stations. Nothing to complain about, but I realize that I like more variety regarding scenery and topography. Not great food post-race, but it was also inexpensive. Medal was fine and the shirt is great. A nice, quiet race.

Very Scenic Course - Viva La Towpath

This was my first time running the Towpath Marathon. The crushed limestone surface was a welcome change from the typical asphalt and concrete I typically run on. The wood bridges and tunnels (early in the race) were interesting as well. The spectators were few and far between - however, that has to do with the way the course is laid out. The aid stations were adequately stocked and appropriately placed and the signs indicating "aid station ahead" were very much appreciated. The large gravel (rocks) at 23 or 24 miles into the course was not the best running surface, but I trudged through it without twisting an ankle. The finish line area needs to be expanded as I felt cramped after just running 26.2 miles in under 3 hours and 33 minutes.

Well organized event.

This is a very enjoyable course - flat, but with nice scenery. The organization was flawless; I didn't have or hear any complaints. Aid stations were never far apart. Every mile was marked. No worries at all. The volunteers and staff were wonderful. I had a great time at the Towpath Marathon.

Fun Race

This was my 31st marathon. I haven't run one that was a 99%+ trail run, but I enjoyed it (the pebbles in my shoe were a nuisance but manageable). The race was EXTREMELY organized... lots of communication before the race, lots water/aid stations, plenty of porta-potties throughout the course, etc. The fans were everywhere they could be and they were great. Great volunteers as well. The course itself was very flat (you wouldn't know it by driving around the area because it is pretty hilly). It's a loop course. I liked how it was broken up... I looked at it in four parts. First, you go ~8.5 miles south on the trail. Second, you run back north on the trail and pass the finish line/area. Third you go ~4.5 miles north of the finish line/area. Fourth, you go back south to the finish line/area. There were a LOT of fast runners (lots of people qualifying for Boston); 221 of the 604 runners listed on the race website ran it in under 4 hours. The course is set up for a PR (I didn't get one but was still under 3.5 hours). I liked the shuttle from the hotel and back for the race (I stayed at the host hotel... the pasta dinner was "ok" - I would have preferred to have had the pasta and add my own sauce). I am from Georgia and wish the marathon t-shirt were short-sleeved for the marathon (it was for the half). I liked the medal and the ceremonies/fun at the end of the race (jacuzzi, beer, music, etc.). I give it an all-around A+ and would highly recommend it... these folks know how to put on a race!

Great small race

I am from the Cleveland area and run on the towpath a lot. If you are from our of town and have never run on this scenic, flat trail, then you would find this race very enjoyable. I was too used to the scenery and got very bored. Be aware that there are very few spectators on this course, but you do get to watch the faster runners coming back towards the finish line due to the layout of the course. I would totally recommend this race if you are looking for a smaller pool of people and some beautiful scenery. Weather is usually nice and cool this time of year. They organizers do a great job with the expo and after party. It's an easy place for your family to park and come meet you at the end.

Towpath Marathon

This was the first time I ran the Towpath Marathon. I was totally surprised how nice the organizers were - like the person at Mile 22, sitting on the chair, who you saw twice. They gave me the extra energy to keep going. I was able to finish without a lot of training (due to injuries). But wow, I really love the course and great support when you need it. Thanks to all of the Towpath support team. I will be back. Great job. - Robert from Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio

A breathtaking run along a national park

The Cuyahoga Valley National Park is a well-kept secret in Northeast Ohio. This was my 2nd marathon and my 1st Towpath Marathon and I loved the race! Well-organized with easy pre-race packet pick-up and parking at the morning of the race ( ample parking at the Boston Mills parking lot). The start was with only the marathon runners and the race went off uneventfully. There were plenty of water stations and a very caring and supportive staff of volunteers. The course was well paved and cared for - a relatively soft surface with less impact on the legs (post-race recovery went smoothly). A great experience in a small-town marathon - a real "diamond in the rough!" Look forward to 2010.

This was such a great course and I loved that it was small. It felt great crossing the finish line and having my family run right up to me. Excellent race

Very well organized. You could register until the last minute, and they made special efforts to mail registration packets out to non-locals in advance. Great course along the towpath and beautiful fall scenery. Plenty of aid stations with Gatorade and water. They could have had a few more port-a-potties along the way, but otherwise, no complaints. Great finish area with lots of fun activities. Would definitely recommend this to others.

Beautiful course with a friendly organization!

This is definitely a very nice, small full/half marathon for those looking to run a PR without too much "other" stuff. I particularly appreciated a timely/friendly response from the race organization when I contacted them a few times. I didn't encounter too much traffic, but I could see that some areas were congested. I can see that something will have to change in the future (i.e. course, putting a limit, etc.) with growing participation.

Best-organized small marathon I've run

This race is clearly organized by veteran runners, and seemed to draw a slightly more experienced field of runners than many bigger races. Still plenty of first-timers. It was great! Pretty scenery, flat, good surface, enthusiastic but not goofy volunteers. Fun, folksy finish area. LOVED the fact that we went by the start at 15 miles rather than halfway. You looked forward to seeing family, then after that you're soon into the upper miles. Really enjoyed this marathon.

Beautiful scenery, great running surface - awesome

This was my first marathon and it was a great experience. The race course was beautiful, and the surface was very easy to run on. There were multiple spots where my family could get close to the trail and cheer for me and take pictures. Water stations were frequent and volunteers were friendly and always cheered for the runners. It would have been nice to have port-a-potties a little closer together, but everything else about the experience was awesome.

Beautiful Flat Course!

This marathon was very flat! The scenery is gorgeous, being at the start of fall when the leaves are changing colors! The only issue is that there are not enough spots for spectators to be cheering. I understand why, being on a trail, but when running 26.2 miles, the energy from the crowds really helps - especially after the halfway point. But overall, I would definitely run again because it's flat and beautiful!

This is the second year in a row that I ran this half marathon. I love the course and the awesome scenery along the way. The start of the day was a bit crazy though! Not enough porta-potties, and the van where the runners leave their belongings should travel to the finish so that runners have their dry clothes or whatever they leave when they finish!!! It would be nice if they opened the building so we could stay warm too. Otherwise... great spectators and a pretty course. I will do it again.

Well worth the trip from Florida

I have known about this marathon for awhile but never had the opportunity to participate in it until this year. I really enjoyed it and hope to run again. It is a RUNNER'S marathon. Beautiful scenery, friendly people, and a great time to be in Ohio. Thanks to the staff who put the race on. I almost don't want to say too much or the word on this race will be out. But, it's a great race and the word should be out there.

Flat, beautiful course. Excellent race.

This was my third Towpath Marathon... beautiful, flat, soft, cool course. Qualified for Boston. The "figure 8" course is great. Highly recommend this small marathon.

Great course, great support - laid back and fun

I ran the half-marathon. I only have one "issue," and it's the same as last year - parking/shuttle buses. I doubt there's much the organizers can do about it, given the limited ways in and out of the the area. But the wait in traffic to park and the wait on a shuttle for the half-marathoners takes a bit of the fun out of the day. Not a deal-breaker though - fun event with a very pretty course!

Beautiful race day and course.

The course/race/day was wonderful. My only concern was that many - and I mean many - were still in lines at the port-a-pots for the 10K and half. There certainly were not enough for the needs of all. It's well organized and the race went very well. There is also a need for ice at the end of the race. I ran the 10K and am looking forward to running the half marathon next year. I am in training for another half marathon in January 2010.

OUTSTANDING!!!

This year, 2009, was my first time running in the Towpath Marathon, and I would definitely give it two thumbs up!!! The course is absolutely beautiful, with awesome fall colors. The trail is smooth and flat. Although it's not overly abundant, there were a good number of spectators at several points throughout the race. The out-and-back routes for the first and second halves of the marathon provided positive reinforcement for me. The race officials, volunteers, and fellow runners were super friendly and supportive. The race expo was held at a ski lodge (Boston Mills) within Cuyahoga National Park. Although small in size, it was fun, friendly, and "homey." The host hotel was only about four miles from the start and was very accommodating, especially with the pasta buffet on Saturday night and the late check-out. Overall, it was an excellent marathon experience!!! I would recommend arriving at least on Friday or staying an extra day so that you can enjoy more of the national park and the various small towns nearby.

Too narrow for the number of runners.

I arrived early and was directed to the far parking lot; so I had to walk quite a distance to get to the start line, while late arrivals were directed to the parking lot right by the start. When I finally arrived, the lines for the porta-potties were ridiculous, and I had to wait 30 minutes. Although the course is pretty, it is too narrow for the number of runners. There was too much congestion by the water stations where people would just stop with no regard for the runners behind them.

Storybook Day

I flew over from Washington state to run my first marathon with my sister and dad (on his 70th birthday). The course was amazing, the spectators were great (small in numbers but motivating enough for me)and the organization gets an A for effort. Thank you for making my first marathon a great experience.

A great course for all races

I ran the 10K race this year and my husband ran the half marathon. For both of us, it was our first time doing any of the Towpath races and we really enjoyed the course. There are, however, a couple of things we think could be modified to make the overall experience better. First would be the traffic/timing to get to the courses themselves. We left our home in plenty of time to get to the start, but with all the stopped traffic we literally got out of the car and ran to the start line. Second, more port-o-potties would be good at the start line. The only other comment relates to the finish line. It would be nice if there was more room at the finish line. It's hard to simply stop running when you cross the line, but if you didn't do just that, you would run into the food tables. It looks like there is room to move the food, etc. back a bit to give the finishing runners more room.

shuttles and bathrooms are the only downsides

This was my first half, so I've got nothing to compare it against, but I waited 35 minutes for porta-potty and 45 minutes without warmth for a shuttle to my car. Otherwise the course was great.

Good Samaritan... and wonderful Towpath experience

Recently I had the pleasure of running in the Towpath's Half Marathon on Sunday, October 11th. What a wonderful oasis of nature amidst the bustle of NE Ohio! Unfortunately, during my run, I lost a very expensive diamond bracelet that held much sentimental value for me. I sent Tanya Stella, Director of Special Events for the Ohio and Erie Canal Corridor, an email with its description on Monday, 10/12. I had little hope, of course, that the bracelet would ever be recovered. Imagine my amazement when I learned that a good Samaritan had found and returned my bracelet to Cuyahoga Valley National Park officials after the run. The odds against this outcome are simply astronomical. I am so grateful to the individual who found the bracelet and returned it and to the staff of the Corridor and the Park for their help. It's little wonder CVNP is the nation's sixth most-visited national park and every bit as cherished as any in the top five (Grand Canyon, Great Smoky Mountains, and Yellowstone among them). A special thank you to Tanya for the time and effort spent revisiting the site, then ensuring that my bracelet was returned safely. In addition, thank you to the crew for the very well maintained trail during the Towpath run. The Towpath is truly NE Ohio's jewel!!

Empathy for those unable to stand while peeing

Very nice course and scenery on the 10K - I'll train better and run the half next year! I did feel bad for those standing in line for the porta-potties at the beginning of the race. I used the wooded area nearby, as did dozens of other mostly male runners. My other comment is about the shuttle buses: Many of us did not see them or were misdirected and ended up walking and or jogging back to Brandywine. Overall, a nice time though.

Great course, scenic, flat and fast.

If you enjoy a smaller marathon, this is one to check out. The course is flat, hard-packed, level, and on crushed limestone. The scenery is beautiful, especially at this time of year. The expo was very small but that's what I expected for a small marathon. The people were wonderful and the aid stations were well manned. Spectators were very sparse but you are running in the middle of a forest, so that should be expected too. There is also plenty to do in the Cleveland area, if you choose to make it a long weekend. Overall, a very good marathon.

Pretty, quiet, plenty of service - mostly.

Ok, they had bananas at mile eight-ish. I thought that would be a terrible idea but it was WAY nicer than gel. The course is NOT totally flat. In the beginning you run some roads that have minor hills, but they are hills just the same. After that, you could put a leveler on it and not see any changes! The expo was VERY small and it was COLD outside that day. However, it was very likely one of the nicest runs I have ever done for scenery. Ultimately, the pictures they took of us running were really pretty too! A few extra porta-potties and this would be one of the top five in all of Ohio to run. No spectators means the whole run is in your head but I run like that anyway. I'd do it again, and I would recommend it!

Beautiful run, poor finish line

This is my second year running the half-marathon. Of course, the scenery is exceptional - quiet and flat, with great fall surroundings. The finish area was disappointing. A bottle of water isn't too much to ask after running 13 miles (instead of the Styrofoam cup I was handed). Also, it's quite difficult to get by side-by-side walkers/runners, who looked annoyed when passed closely. Unfortunately, the shirt color was a big miss this year again. All that being said, I will run again next year! Hope you can do better!

Beautiful and quiet race

The course is beautiful and flat. The expo is a bit lame, but it has the general stuff you'd expect (free samples, cheap GU, and local shops). The race has tons of fluid stations, and someone even had a big tub of Vaseline and was giving it out (on a stick). I agree with others that the finish is short, but the post-race food (bagels, fruit, drink) was plentiful and easy to get. I've had better, but this is a pretty inexpensive race so they have to cut somewhere! My own complaint, and kind of a silly one, is that the medals aren't really fancy at all. I ran Akron last year and just got a kick out of that medal. This one is a bit on the simple/bland side. This is a great race for someone who trains alone/runs alone, and can just go out and run. I live in NYC, so it is hard to run "alone," but I train alone and found this course gave me a similar feel. I did use headphones just to have a little sound, but that was not necessary. People are friendly and talkative. The race organizer is great too! I emailed with several questions and I always received a prompt and complete response.

Great race for beginners and veterans alike

Flat, beautiful, gentle course. The volunteers and organizers were wonderful. Plenty of support! Gorgeous time of year with the leaves changing. This is a superb choice for those runners looking for a smaller race. Not a lot of spectators on the entire length of the course, but more than enough aid stations and plenty of volunteers. I highly recommend it.

Pretty course - interesting history

If you're looking for a small race that is pretty, this one's for you. Flat, fast course - not many spectators because of the course, but plenty of aid stations and good surface. I drove over nine hours to run this race and would do it again. I got burned out at the big races; there are just too many people. The smaller ones are just more fun, but you don't have big expos or crowds.

A very scenic, flat course without pace runners.

This was one of the flattest marathons I have ever run. The autumn colors of the trees were beautiful. At times when people were running in both directions on part of the course, it was a little crowded. I was able to run a Boston qualifier, even though there weren't pace runners. If you are looking for a PR or a Boston qualifier, and can do it without pace runners, this marathon deserves your serious consideration.

It's your own personal hell, but it's beautiful.

This was the prettiest race I have ever run... through the woods, but on wide, packed trails/roads. Very few spectators; you can run your own race at your own pace. My thanks to the organizers and the volunteers; all are friendly and helpful. Do this one at least once; you will be pleased.

This is an absolutely beautiful course. The towpath is great on the legs. It is very well run. Everyone I met was friendly and helpful. The host hotel was very accommodating for the runners; they opened breakfast early and gave everyone a late checkout.

Beautiful course; organization needs work.

I ran the 10K, and my husband ran the half. I'll second the porta-potty comment, as I was one of those standing in line when the gun went off. My gun time was a full 18 minutes slower than my actual chip time. While running to catch up, I turned right when I was supposed to turn left, running past a race volunteer and a police cruiser (with an officer behind the wheel) who let me and my very obvious race bib make the wrong turn. You can make the argument that I should have been responsible for knowing the course, and I agree on one level. But I sure wish the volunteer and cop that I ran past had yelled, "Hey, you're going the wrong way!" That would have saved me a lot of time. Also, after running a mile off-course and starting 18 minutes later than the gun, I discovered that all of the aid stations along the road had packed up and gone. In essence, my race was unsupported. I saw a volunteer in a white van, picking up cones, who was very kind and reassured me that I was, indeed, on the right track. If it had not been for him, I would not have known. Thank goodness I had brought my own hydration. That said, the day was still enjoyable. The course is scenic, flat and fast. The host town should be named Cute As A Button, OH. Believe it or not, I will return... but I will be sure to have a course map AND some toilet paper.

fabulous marathon

Thank you to the organizers, park rangers, police, and volunteers for a wonderful marathon. It was well organized, with plenty of water, HEED, Gatorade, and food (except for gel at mile 24). The hot tub at the finish was great for recovery. Be sure not to have any valuables in drop-bag because they are left in an unattended area at the finish and you just go pick it up from the ground. I highly recommend this race, staying at the Richfield Super 8 (great value, and friendly staff) and dining at the Richfield Family Restaurant two doors down (which had the best burger and fries ever, as well as breakfast all day).

Perfect, small, fall marathon

I often train on the towpath but had never run the race. In 2007 I ran Grand Rapids and BQ'd. I loved that race. Towpath had a similar feel, albeit on a smaller scale. The half sold out and the marathon was nearly full, so the race is increasing its popularity despite competition from the well-run Akron Marathon. They change the course around each year, but I really liked the way it worked this year. The half had a separate starting point and course, which was essential because you are running on a five-abreast trail with two out-and-backs. We saw the half runners coming back as we headed into the second half of the full. The lack of spectators is made up for by the two-way traffic. You see your faster buddies coming back from the turn-around and vice versa - twice. Fall foliage was just turning: beautiful. I saw a herd of deer just yards away: great. The crushed limestone trail: easy on the old legs. BQ'd by seven minutes: Perfect!

Excellent smaller marathon

Today (10-11-09) was my 10th marathon, and one of the best I've ever been involved in. Yes, I'm probably biased since I set a PR by 23 minutes at a 3:44, but part of that was due to the marathon itself. There was a great combination today of mid-40's temps, a very flat course, well-staffed aid-stations, and nice conversation and encouragement from other runners. The expo was sort of pathetic, but the packet pick-up was easy and well-organized. Only one complaint: before the race, most runners (including me) were waiting in pretty long lines to use the restrooms inside the ski lodge. After we finally got through and headed to the starting line, we passed about 8-10 port-a-jons on the far end of the parking lot, with no one in line. I think it would be good to either let people know they were there, or to move them closer to the lodge's main parking area. Outside of that, though, everything went really well.

Too few porta-potties at start

So the half-marathon sold out, and the 10K started at the same location, and there were only 10 porta-potties?? Seriously? I waited in line for 25 minutes this morning to use the "can" - and when the start bell rang, there were still lines of people waiting. Were race organizers surprised by the number of people at the start??

Great run for the money

If I can BQ on this course - and I did - then you know it has to be fast. I took the shuttle from the host hotel and had no problems the rest of the morning. There were more than enough water stations with a variety of liquids and solids: water, Gatorade (strong, not watered down), something called Heat (?), GU, bananas, and probably some stuff I missed. My second time running Towpath and I highly recommend it. I met many runners from northeast Illinois who refuse to pay high dollar just to have a million-spectator and 40,000-runner downtown-Chicago convergence. Take their advice and run a nature marathon through a national forest. Great job, Towpath!

Organizational gaffes all around

There is no question that the scenery is beautiful. But the race organizers need to get with it; there were several issues: 1) Way too few porta-potties. I counted no more than 25, and this is for more than 2,000 runners! Many runners started late. 2) No room to finish. Seriously, you had maybe 30 feet in the pen to finish. 3) I couldn't hear any of the announcements on the sound system. 4) I couldn't know when the race started. By my watch it started more than five minutes late 5) Giving out frozen bagel halves and half of a banana is a little weak for the post-race food giveaway. I guess it depends on your expectations. I was expecting better organization from a race that has been around for such a long time.

Good race but runners need to follow TAC rules

The race is good, but most of the run is on a path. Because of this, runners need to follow proper passing rules to avoid accidents. On three occasions, I was passed too closely (less than two strides) without the other runner looking. I had to change my pace. On another occasion, a runner stopped in front of another runner at the water stop, almost causing injury.

Excellent marathon

I ran this marathon last October and couldn't have asked for more! By the end it got pretty hot (80 degrees), but everything from start to finish was lovely. The organization was superb and the aid stations were well-stocked. Everybody was friendly and supportive. The course, although out and back, was gorgeous. I've run a few larger marathons, and I'd choose this quaint little event in a heartbeat over those.

Beautiful course: soft surface, shaded, scenery...

If you are looking for a flat, shaded, scenic course through a well maintained national park in the center of a quaint village, that is well managed with plenty of water stops/aid stations/bathrooms along the way, look no further than the Towpath Marathon. The people running the event are extremely kind and friendly. There is plenty to do in the Cleveland area the entire weekend, whether race related or not. The half marathon, marathon, 5K, and trail run all end at the same spot, so bring all levels of running partners with you. It is a loop course, which helps the spectators, and I would rather run by a meadow, trees, or various rivers twice than through a city. Truly, a remarkable event. You won't be disappointed here unless your main reason for coming is the expo. I have enjoyed The Towpath Marathon/Half/5K event for the last five years and can't imagine there being a better event.

Great "small" marathon on a trail.

October 12, 2008 was my 2nd Tow Path Marathon out of 24. I will do it again and would recommend it if you're looking for a small marathon on a trail. It's a very scenic run in a National Park; it's flat, so you can qualify on it, although most fan support is in one location (at mile 15 and the finish). Enough aid stations on the course. Need more port-a-johns at the start. Expo was good. Fun family activities at the finish.

Fall Marathon in Ohio - Perfect

What could one expect for fall in Ohio but beautiful and colorful scenery? A plus was that the starting temperature was cool and it was over before it got hot out. You never know what you will get temperature-wise, but this year was perfect. The course was flat and fast - just what I wanted and needed. This was my second time running this marathon and I was not disappointed. The water stops were well manned and encouraging. Yes, one later stop ran out of Gatorade, but that happens, unfortunately. A problem I had was at the end. As I was running through the people on both sides, I had to ask how far it was and which way to go since there wasn't anyone there to guide me. Other than that, it was a sunny day to spend running through the woods.

Great Fall Marathon

I thought the course was excellent. Only problem: you can't ALWAYS run the tangents because you have at times marathoners and half-marathoners running at you because of the turn-around course. Nevertheless, my Garmin only read 26.32 and I was able to PR by 5 minutes. The early start meant I could only feel the temperature heat up somewhat in the shaded environment after 2.5 hours or so. I hope to be back.

Scenic, flat and soft - great!

I ran the half and was quite pleased with all of the above. A great race to enter the fall season. Organized well with two start locations and some coordinated loops. A narrow path, but there was no trouble passing others or being passed. Things are kept interesting; as a half-marathoner, you get a view of the leaders of both the half and the full marathoners as the course doubles back. The turnaround is anti-climactic and the stations were manned well. Shade is great and the free massage at the end was just what we needed. The only comment is that the spectators are somewhat far apart and the finish was confusing for some.

Unfulfilled Promises

My wife and I ran this marathon together, and there were some issues on the course. They ran out of Gatorade after mile 20, there was no GU handed out at mile 24, and there was no fruit to be found anywhere. This wouldn't be that bad if you weren't expecting to have those items at the posted aid stations. My wife ended up getting very lightheaded and needed to stop around mile 23 and 25 because the only thing that was offered to us was water. The course was great. The limestone was nice and soft, so it was very easy on the joints. My one complaint would be that between miles 19 and 20 you come to a complete dead-end and have to come to a complete stop and turn around. Not exactly what you want to do 20 miles into a marathon. To make matters worse, there is an aid station at this dead end, so it becomes very crowded. My wife and I have run numerous marathons and half's, in all sorts of sizes, and for a smaller marathon like Towpath, we would suggest the Grand Rapids Marathon a week later.

A fall marathon to remember

My second visit to the Towpath Marathon, and I was just as happy this year as last year. The course is all that a runner can ask for: Flat, fast, scenic, and shaded. The last two years this race has been on the same day as Chicago, and with the high temps, I have been glad I came to Ohio. Other positives are the small, well-organized expo, and the well run aid stations. My only criticisms of the marathon are the time it takes to get finisher awards. Tanya was great to give me mine early so I did not get locked out of my hotel. I think I will be back in 2009 for a third straight attempt at a PR.

BEAUTIFUL COURSE!

My sister and I ran the half in 2008 and it was a great experience! It was a beautiful course with the all the fall colors! It was a quiet run, so if you need tons of spectators and commotion, this is not for you. BUT this was beautiful, flat, and well organized. One small suggestion: if you can have someone pick you up at the end, it is a lot easier than waiting for a shuttle - but it's not a big deal.

Such A Beautiful Run!

This was my first organized running event and I really have never been much of a runner at all. But the scenery was impossible to believe every step of the way and really kept me motivated to finish the race. I would love to come back every year. The start was confusing, even to those who had done this before. Also, there were several runners who I saw turn back toward the finish before reaching the turnaround point. Were there not supposed to be additional mats to verify that runners actually completed the whole race? No matter; I would love to return next year and beat my own time.

A Beautiful Fall Run

I thoroughly enjoyed running along the flat and very scenic trail. Seeing the river and the fall foliage made for such a great experience. The only criticism I have is where the start line was located, which was nearly a mile from the trail and about 2/3 of a mile south of the parking lot at Boston Mills Ski Resort. Ideally the start line would be much closer to the trail. Otherwise, the organizers did an excellent job, aid stations were plentiful and supporters were extremely friendly.

Like Running Through a Painting!

This is the fastest trail marathon around. Period. Zero hills. The packed and crushed limestone towpath is soft, yet holds no puddles if it rains. It's all mighty easy on the legs and just as fast as a road race. The scenery slowed some runners down, as they felt compelled to stop and take photos of the fall scenes. Experienced professional organizers make this race a pleasure to run!

Flat course; enjoyed the views

I ran the half-marathon. The expo was small and very well organized. The race itself was well organized; I only rated the organization four stars because after the race, I, as well as others, waited nearly 25 minutes for far-too-infrequent shuttles to transport us the three miles to Brandywine. This definitely needs improvement. We actually sat on the floor of the shuttle we got, so we didn't have to wait another 20 minutes. The course has beautiful scenery, and it's flat, fast and easy on the joints. I loved it. There are not a great many spectators due to the course being mostly on a very tight two-way towpath trail, but where they were, they were very enthusiastic and helpful. The fluid stations were plentiful and very well staffed and supplied.

Beautiful Course, Perfect 1st Marathon!

I just wanted to put out there how awesome this course is for a first-time marathoner. Extremely flat, crushed limestone trail set amongst beautiful scenery. Great volunteers and plenty of aid stations. Not a heck of a lot of spectators due to the relative inaccessibility of the course, but otherwise it is a wonderful small marathon. It really was great to have the marathon and half-marathon start in different places so the groups were separated. I highly recommend this little charmer to anyone looking for something smaller and a bit out of the ordinary.

'Thons Don't Get Any More Scenic

I've done marathons all over the planet, and they don't get any more beautiful than this one. I may be a bit biased since I train on the course, but it's a fantastic place to run. The crushed limestone surface is fairly soft and very forgiving, but it also slows you ever so slightly. Thus you may not run quite as fast as you'd think possible for a flat course. The upside of this is that recovery is faster. Support is friendly and helpful. Organization is fine. Not many spectators except at the start and finish. City marathons are fine, but they're a dime a dozen. This baby is a one of a kind. And a keeper at that. I'll keep coming back.

Beautiful day, nice race

I had just done the Akron Marathon two weeks prior to this race, so I had very low expectations for myself. I was pleasantly surprised with my time, the course, spectators and race organization. I liked the "bow-tie" course, which I'm sure made staffing the aid stations much easier. All of the volunteers were friendly and helpful, and the spectators were great. My only complaint is that the race results were not posted within 24 hours of the race... in our modern "chip-timed" running world, people expect quicker posting of results.

Where are the results?

For a chipped race, the results should be up much sooner. Anything longer than 24 hours from start time is unacceptable in this day and age. On the other hand, I will run this race again because it is very well organized and the course is perfect.

Towpath - a step back in Ohio history

Thanks to two Ohio congressmen, James Sieberling (d. 2008) and Ron Regula, this marathon goes along the historic Ohio-Erie canal in a national forest. Fog blankets on the Cuyahoga River, trees draped in yellow and orange, and massive locks still standing over the canal made this marathon memorable in many ways. It's flat as flat can be. Quality Inn offered a good pasta dinner and a late (2 p.m.) check out, which allowed time for a healing ice bath. Would suggest having lots of ice if the temps are warm next year so that that water can be ice cold at the finish. Cold orange slices helped. Don't miss the Boston Store, a national park museum with lots of displays on the canal system. It helped build our country in the early 1800s. The trail is basically hard dirt, making trail shoes unnecessary. Volunteers were friendly. Will come back!

Beautiful, easy, well-organized

If you need thousands of people on every side of you while you run, don't run Towpath. My first marathon was the big Chicago marathon, but Towpath was FAR better! Wow- the trees, the bridges, the railroad tracks, ponds etc were all incredibly beautiful, the path was mostly limestone trail and flat, and the weather was nice and cool. The organization was excellent, everything was well- marked, and there was fantastic post-race food and massages! And kudos to the artist who sketched the t-shirt design (still one of my favorite shirts!).

Loved it- very scenic and good for your knees

I loved the path and its scenic views - very peaceful and serene. It's also good for your knees, because running on paths is far better than the streets. Not many volunteers, but they were wonderful and friendly. It was by far the most enjoyable course I have ever done... I loved the small=town atmosphere and I certainly will do it again.

Good race but need directions where start line is

Each time I have run this marathon, it has been quite different but enjoyable. I suggest having signs directing runners to the start as no one knew where to go since the start line changed this year (2007). Return to the course starting at Howes' Meadow and ending at the visitor's center in Cuy. Hts. The figure-eight course is tedious, esp. when when you see how many runners are ahead of you.

Excellent first-time marathon for older runners

As a 61-year-old doing his first run and first marathon, I could not have asked for a better course and support. I enjoyed the uncrowded course and the friendliness and encouragement of runners who passed me. Two suggestions I would offer to first-timers - especially if you're older. 1. You may want to carry your own fluid container with you to supplement what's available. Because of the heat that day, I would have had a hard time making it between stops if I wasn't carrying and refilling my Gatorade bottle along the way. 2. I took advantage of starting with the walkers, which gave me an extra hour so I didn't feel the time pressure. My goal at this age was to finish - which I did - regardless of my time.

Loved it

Great course support, beautiful setting, soft surface. I really enjoyed this race. It's small, and there aren't a ton of spectators, so if you are looking for a lot of company, it may not be for you. But I prefer small races, and really enjoyed this one. Highly recommend it!

Wonderful Course, Great Support - Must-Do Race

Cannot say enough about this race. It was my first full marathon - I did the half here last year and had a blast. The course is great, support on the course was fantastic (Gu/water) and the race organizers were more than helpful. I considered doing many other marathons instead of the Towpath as my first, but I am glad I picked this one. One major bonus - my 5-year-old son got to hold my hand and run with me across the finish line. There would be no chance of this happening at other "big city" marathons. As mentioned before, there are not a lot of crowds (you are on the Towpath, remember) but the volunteers and other racers offered more than enough support. Absolutely a perfect first-time marathon course. When you consider this race is actually a fundraiser, how can you go wrong? My only suggestions would be: I noticed the merchandise order form disappeared off the website pretty quickly; if you can still make money doing so, I would suggest leaving it up longer. Finally, it would have been nice to have the finish chute outlined in ribbon or tape so it was easier to see where you had to go at the turn - but the Towpath is a 5-star race for sure.

Flat, scenic course with a small-town atmosphere

This is a lovely, small, quaint marathon on a packed gravel surface under mostly shade-like conditions. The scenery is beautiful. The volunteers are exceptional. The venue is perfect. The post-race celebration is small but professionally done. The town, and neighboring towns are quaint and pretty. The organizers are pleasant and approachable.

This is a great course for first time runners.

This was my first time running a race on a trail like this. The course is very forgiving on the joints. The finish atmosphere was nice for families. I will definitely run this course again. I have lived in the area forever and never new the towpath was there. I am hooked and do my regular runs there now.

Scenic course makes for a great run

I LOVED running along the Towpath trail, especially during the fall season. The only change I would like to see is MORE RESTROOMS at the start and along the course. Otherwise, it was a great event with beautiful scenery and mild weather.

A nicely organized marathon on a scenic course!

Towpath was my 13th marathon, and the only thing that was unlucky was the weather. The temps far exceeded what is normal for that time of the year, so I don't see a problem with the date, just bad weather this year. The mile markings were precise, and I thought there were plenty of volunteers and fluid stations. I thought the course was scenic, and the trail surface was in excellent condition. I thought the trail was a bit congested between the 15-17 mile mark, when the trail was then being shared with the half marathon runners that were running towards the marathoners heading out. I would defintely recommend this race for someone looking for a scenic trail marathon.

Great race for first-time runner!

This was my first half marathon and all went well. The course was nice and FLAT, and the scenery was gorgeous. My one concern prior to the race was that the towpath would be extremely crowded with runners. However, because the first few miles of the race were on the road, it gave the runners an opportunity to spread out. I NEVER felt cramped or crowded on the path that was great!! If I could offer any recommendations, they would be: 1 - Don't do a down & back race course 2 - Have the finish line be a straight shot (not a quick turn), and have at least the last 1/4 mile be on the street where spectators can cheer the runners on I plan to run this race again next year!

NEED MORE RESTROOMS

The line for the restroom was unacceptably long, and this is something that needs to be corrected. NEED MORE RESTROOMS. Also, the route seems to change quite often and walkers with headphones walking side-by-side obstruct the narrow towpath. Otherwise, I appreciate the fact that a marathon takes place in the Metropark system and that the volunteers are plentiful. Thank you for volunteering your time.

Quiet trail run... but lots of mosquitoes!

I came in from VA to run this race leading up to MCM and loved the crushed limestone/gravel course. The leaves were changing, which made the course more enjoyable. Shirt design could have been nicer as was earlier mentioned. There were loads of mosquitoes out on the course. Too bad I forgot my bug spray!

Great Marathon

I truly enjoyed this marathon. The layout made it possible for me to connect with my "fan base" several times. That they had plenty of water, Gatorade and GU was just one of the signs of a well organized event. The shady course kept us cool on an otherwise warm day. I would like to run this one again.

Most scenic course of any marathon I've run (this was my 16th). Good surface and level. The perfect race for a hot day mostly in the shade. Great organization, great volunteers, great spectator fans but not enough of them. Perfect finish: Arby's Roast Beef, Free Beer, and a hot tub! If you like a small field, Towpath is a Must-Run!

Good Race... Weird Shirt

I enjoyed this race. Although it was essentially an out/back on a trail (expect boring), the differing landscape made it less monotonous. 2 suggestions: 1. Design the shirt to look less like anatomy.... I've had several people give me funny looks when I wear it (I'm no longer allowed to wear it per my husband, ha!). 2. Be ready to make the hot-tubs into ice-tubs at the end of the race depending on the weather. Ice baths would have been invaluable!!! Suggestion for future runners- don't wear ultra-short socks- gravel seemed to be shooting directly into my socks!

Okay, so this not a spectator course because your on an awesome trail almost the entire race. The Towpath Marathon is however well run, extremely beautiful with a home town atmosphere. I enjoyed my first marathon on this scenic course

This was my first marathon and I enjoyed the course and the experience. I was concerned that the weather might be 45 degrees and rain, but who would have expected 88 and sunny- similar to the kind of weather I had trained in. The first 18 miles were mostly shaded and the aid stations were well stocked and staffed. I would have preferred a straight-in sprint to a finish line visible from a distance, not the tight turn and the parking block tripping hazard about 25 yards from the finish. Another bummer was being held for an annoying 30-second delay for traffic at the road crossing on the northern loop of the course. My family support group enjoyed this setting and I learned some things from this first marathon experience. We are looking forward to a second try next year!

Loved the course - very scenic!

I loved running on the more-forgiving towpath surface and ran a PR. I would have preferred if the race shirt were a more runner-friendly, dry-weave material. The total cost for this marathon was much less than another one I had planned on attending (Baltimore Marathon), which factored into my decision.

Well-organized and great party at the finish

Beautiful area, and fun but challenging race!

I am continually surprised at the beauty of this state. Being my first half-marathon, the scenery enabled me to focus on something other than my own misery! Not only was it beautiful, but the people also emitted an infectious positive energy that also enabled me to keep running and not lie down on the path in defeat. We also had a great hotel. Overall, my husband and I had a great experience and plan to do it again - maybe 26.2 next year...?

Beautiful course - nature at its finest

The scenery and beauty of this course were why I chose it, and it did not disappoint me. Of course the weather was another story. The temp. hit 90 that afternoon and although there were trees and shade, I'd estimate approx. 5 miles where you were running in the sun. I'd really like to run it again when the weather is cooler. The official hotel was all right, although I'd skip their pasta dinner special - it's not worth it.

I enjoyed this race, a nice change from city races

I enjoyed this race. It is a nice change from city-based races. My suggestions for some improvements are to change the finish line so that you don't turn a corner but can sprint straight into the finish line and to have a bigger variety of food at the after party. Also, a Dri-Fit shirt would be great, and have more size smalls. Women runners are small. Overall a great time. I recommend it and plan to return.

Great race for off-roaders: flat & fast!!

This was my first time running the Towpath; I did the 1/2 marathon. The course is flat and mostly off-road - great for anyone who enjoys a change of pace from running on pavement. Scenery is fantastic, esp. due to the time of year and the fall foliage. Not a good race for spectators, as there are very few places to see the runners. Aid stations and registration were managed very well!

Very Walker-Friendly

I'm a walker. I'm always very concerned that longer races will not be "walker friendly." I was assured by the race organizers that "no one will be left behind." Thank you for making the walkers feel welcome. One suggestion that I would like to offer: Don't have the half-marathon walkers start an hour early; only the marathon walkers need to start early. The course is open for the marathoners for something like 6 hours and they run the same course at the half. Why do I suggest this? Because when I was dropped off at the half start, my boyfriend (who was running the full) had the most difficult time driving back to the marathon start because the early walkers were taking up one side of the road and the other people coming to the half start were taking up the other side of the road. He did make it by start time, but not as early as he would have liked. The water stations were numerous and the volunteers were encouraging and friendly. Any turns or turnarounds were well marked. There were numerous facilities and plenty of water at the start.

A nice race!

Take away the record heat, and this was a great race. I was hoping for a PR since the course is flat, but the heat prevented such things. The only good thing about the heat was the beer at the finish really tasted good. I appreciated the well-marked turnarounds, and the different starts so that the marathoners and half-marathoners didn't have to squeeze together at the start. Also, on the second part, you did see the half-marathoners, which was a boost. The scenery was nice. I will consider doing this one again.

I love the towpath and the giving, soft surface provided by the packed limestone gravel path. Not sure if it would have been the same had it been wet. Organization seems to be going through some growing pains, but I imagine the problems in this year's race will be fixed in the next.

beautiful fall run!

The course is gorgeous; unparalleled in terms of beauty. The leaves are changing, the route is scenic, etc. Nice surface if you have injuries - i.e., crushed limestone. Not a lot of crowd support due to the size of the race being smaller than larger-scale marathons, and due to the trail route not allowing for a lot of crowd support. I found the people who ran it though to step up and be more supportive of each other; more so than I experienced in the Cleveland marathon where there is more crowd support. Water and Gu stations were totally reliable. The Arby's sandwiches at the end are kind of gross. Different food that is more sensitive to vegetarians would be helpful. Also, the hot tub thing is really gross. The shirt is cool.... Great experience!

Loved that I chose this marathon for my fall season. Things that were great: Flat, scenic PR course: Great support from volunteers and spectators, small field, and a good, small-town atmosphere. When I had to leave early I was given my award with no questions. Things that could be better: No more Arby's at the end. I ate it, but it was because I had no other choices. Also: Small medal. Scenic, friendly, enjoyable and well-organized!

This was my 11th marathon and first one in mid-80's F, sunny & HUMID weather...was a bit apprehensive about that, however, shouldn't have been! Organizers were well prepared, provided a scenic, flat (and shady :-)) marathon course with lots of support throughout including a post-race beer garden. Can't say enough good things about the friendly vibe to this race and desire to provide a quality race experience for all participants. Enjoyed the flat and scenic course and visit to NE Ohio. Area is close enough to Cleveland/ Akron/ Canton areas to tie in visits to both NFL & Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fames and still maintain your taper. GREAT job all and wishing you ongoing success with this event in future. Ran Toronto Waterfront Marathon the weekend prior and enjoyed this one even more!

Beautiful course.

Great course with plenty of shade and great water stops. I did the half because of an injury that set me back in training. If I could suggest a couple of things: 1. A two-person relay with a exchange at the Boston store. 2. A covered tent in the finishing area to protect runners from sun, wind, rain. It was hot standing out in the sun this year. 3. Some type of water or spraying device at the end if the marathon is ever run in hot weather again. The Parkersburg Half had one of these. 4. Reverse the current course so the later miles run through the peninsula; that seems to be the more scenic part of course with more fan support. Otherwise, it's a great race. Definite will do it again.

Totally flat, mostly shaded, fast course

In giving this marathon 5 stars for course, I am NOT comparing it to scenic courses like Marine Corps, Steamtown, Flying Pig, etc. This is a totally different 'kind' of marathon. It was a refreshing change from the 'typical' marathon on concrete and asphalt. The start is 0.9 miles to the towpath. The Towpath Trail is flat and its surface is mostly crushed limestone...an occasional strip of asphalt near the path's access points. After the first 0.9 miles, the rest is entirely Towpath. It is heavily shaded in many areas but does have its points where you are in full light. The shade certainly helped this year during the heat. If you want a course that is predictable, fast, without ups/downs, gorgeous natural surroundings, you'll love this race. The water stops were well stocked, great volunteers, and easy to tell what was water and what was Gatorade. I gotta say...the roar of the crowd at the finish line was great! Other than that, there are very few spectators...which in reality, there really can't be many. One suggestion: ditch the hot tubs at the finish and spend the funds on a high quality finishing medal. Out of my 18 marathons, this was the smallest and lightest medal by far.

Worth the Time

There are several small points that could be improved upon but overall this was a good race. I understand the need for the start location (need some distance to spread out the runners a little before entering the trail) but it was not made clear that there were no port-a-potties or refreshments near the start. Plan in advance. Never seen so many people using natures cover. Also, don't be fooled by any suggestions of an expo. There was a wellness display and a table selling some New Balance product at registration. Also, unless I missed them no pins were provided for your race number and no ties for your chip. Had to lace it on which is very annoying to remove at the end. Also, I'd rather see some bagels than an Arby's sandwich at the end. The rest is all good. Beautiful location. Lots of aid stations. Turnarounds were clearly marked. Where spectators could watch they were numerous and vocal. Couple hotels within 10 min of the start line. Around 400 people in the marathon so if you don't like the big crowds this race is an excellent choice. About 75% of the course is shaded which helped with the heat. Overall I would recommend this race for people who are looking for a nice simple fairly well run smaller marathon.

A wonderful small marathon

This is a great small town marathon. Lots of free parking, and despite the very hot day, there were lots of supplies at all the aid stations. The course is on a trail, and there are essentially NO spectators, except where the trail crosses a road. Because of the heat (88º), I finished much later than I expected, but there was still lots of food available, including bananas, oranges, and Arby's roast beef sandwiches. The volunteers were fantastic, unfailingly cheerful and dedicated. The race director replied promptly to emails before the event, and results were posted on the website the same day. I had a great time.

The course is beautiful. 26.2 miles of beautiful scenery, really takes your minds off the hard work. The course has a variety of running surfaces. There were plenty of water and aid stations on the course. Volunteers were friendly and helpful. There weren't many spectators, but that is understandable for trail running. Organization wasn't as good. When I asked for help, half of the time, the staffs didn't have answers. At the finish line, runners were confusing not knowing where to return the chips. There was plenty of food for everyone at the finish line. Thanks everyone.

Disaster

For a number of years, I would rave, on this very site, about this very marathon. What was once the best marathon in this region of the country, has become, perhaps, worse than the Cleveland Marathon itself. A disaster - despite the glorious course, the organization was as amateurish as anything I have ever witnessed. Examples: Screwed up the starting point a 1/2-mile down the road, having to close all roads accessing the parking half an hour before start times, failing to provide enough toilets (does it get any more amateurish?). I was with a partner who became hyponatremic. No first aid - if there was, you couldn't find it. None of the race personnel knew where it was. The heat today was NOT a surprise to anyone - how can there be NO first aid? Even Cleveland has that!

This was my 14th marathon and was by far the most beautiful and scenic course I have ever run on. It was also flat and lends itself to PRs if you are trained properly. I was only a few minutes off my PR and this was because I ran a 25-mile training run the day before in prep for a 50M in 6 weeks. The only complaint I have is that the turnaround point was not manned or marked well when me and a couple of other runners passed it, thus resulting in extra distance as well as additional time added to our finish times. Not a huge deal since I would not have gotten a PR anyway, but it would have been nice to see how close I would have gotten to it. Overall, though, a great marathon experience, and I would highly recommend it!

Good for a PR

I want to start off this review with the drawback because I don't want the one drawback to be the last thing in your head about this race. The fact that all marathoners, half, and relay all started at the same time made the start much more crowded than it needed to be. Other than that, this was a great race. This was the first "flat" course I have run. I never thought the hills made such a difference to me until this race. I bested my PR by more than eight minutes after running a 50K the week before. This course is fast and the crushed limestone most of the way makes it a smooth ride. The aid stations were plentiful and well stocked, I had more GU then I knew what to do with. Running through Cuyahoga Falls National Park in the fall is a truly beautiful experience. There is a great small-town atmosphere that goes along with this marathon; bring the family and make a weekend of it. In all if you are looking for a scenic route for a PR and are tired of the crowds of bigger marathons, Towpath is for you. If crowd support is a big deal for you, consider looking elsewhere. The spectators that are there are great but are few and far between. I wouldn't choose it for your first marathon only because the flatness of the course can only set you up for disappointment when you run a normal course with hills. I recommend staying at the Stanford Hostel. This is where I stayed, and for $15 a night, you can't beat it. The hostel is a quarter mile from the start. They have a nice kitchen for cooking pre-race meals and there are sure to be other runners there on marathon weekend. Heck, I might even go back to Cuyahoga Falls another weekend and stay at the Stanford house. Would I run this race again? Absolutely. P.S. Don't plan on spending any time at the expo; it's literally in a two-car garage, ha.

Great race

I ran the half marathon this year and was very pleased with the race. It was very well organized. Parking and getting to the start is very easy. And getting out of the parking lot at the end was no problem. The trail is nice and flat and very well marked. It is a narrow trail at times, so you have to manuever around people. There were plenty of aid stations that have nice signs beforehand letting you know what's available. My only complaint is that they ran out of GU at one post that was supposed to have it. Other than that, the race was great. The party at the finish line was nice too. Beer and Arby's sandwiches! They also had a hot tub - which is gross if you ask me - a jumper room thing for the kids, and a band. I'll do this race every year and next year I'll run the full.

This is what a marathon should be!!!!!!!!!

The weather was fantastic. The towpath was highlighted by fall colors and was truly spectacular. I started early - a real plus for slow entrants - and saw early morning deer in the mist. Great! The organization and the new course were real plusses. Recommend it to everyone.

Great marathon!

Beautiful marathon - loved running through the woods. Have run Chicago and other big marathons, and this is a nice change of pace; small, very well supported. Don't expect much crowd support, but appreciated those that did cheer us on. Because of size, thought there was more camaraderie among the runners. I also liked the new course. For the last eight miles it helped feeling like I knew what I still had to run going back. Had a PR on the course - think running on the trail had something to do with this. Definitely recommended!

needs better organization

This is a beautiful course, but the organization is terrible. The relay areas were not done right. Nowhere to go when you are done. They do not have fluids for you at the relay areas. Some of the marathoners kept going past the turn-around because no one was there to tell them to turn and it was not marked properly. I was told by the race director that the roads would only be closed until 8:15, but I barely made it to my relay area because the road was closed until 2:00 in the metro parks in Cleveland. There were many people asking directions. I love the towpath and will continue to donate money for it, but I hope they get this race better organized.

Awesome trail!!

I have run this marathon in the past and the new "figure 8" course set up does not rate in comparison to the old "point-to-point" race from Akron to Cleveland. The new course was very monotonous. Hopefully the point-to-point race will be back next year with the construction being completed on the northern part of the trail. The spectators were awesome, the coffee cart was a great addition to the start, and the water stops plentiful, but Arby's roast beef sandwiches at the finish... yuck. That is the last thing a runner needs or wants to eat after running 26.2 miles. I would recommend the half in 2007 if the course stays the same. Although overall, a very well organized race. Nice job!

As good as it gets

The Towpath was my 40th race at the marathon/ultra distance (this one after a 5-year hiatus) which have included fields ranging from 25 runners in upstate NY to the mega-M's of Washington, Detroit, Toronto, Philly, and Boston on occasion. I must say that the Towpath was a most pleasant experience - as pleasant as a marathon could ever be, of course. The organization was first-rate, the fans and spectators were most exuberant, the on-course facilities were fine, and the course itself was most spectacular. The trail and scenery are what define the Towpath (not to denigrate to any degree the fans nor the organization). The trail surface was easy on the joints while the surroundings re-engaged the spirit of running in its most natural form. This race is for every runner who ever wished to run this distance for the sake of running and who will not allow themselves to be concerned with trivial matters such as late trains, shortage of "facilities," lack of "grab bag goodies" (all I want is a T-shirt that fits), start time and end-of-race concerns, and so on. Relax and enjoy the show, it's a great marathon!!! The only issue that needs to be addressed is the lack of emergency medical services at race's end (re: the "distressed" runner situation). P.S. If you're shooting for a PB, then take the necessary precautions like looking up the start time on the internet before you leave home, avoiding the train and instead drive and get there early, double-knot your laces, don't over-hydrate, and don't have a cigar while you are waiting in line for the porta-potty. Cheers.

Great scenic race

This beautiful race was very well organized (although I didn't take the train!.) The course was beautiful, the aid stations and volunteers were great (especially the disco girls at the second station), and the post-race refreshments and activities were excellent (except the luke-warm second hot-tub). This was my first marathon and I chose it because I love running a towpath trail near my home (outside Toledo) and because such paths are easy on my creaky knees. I finished a little slower than I had hoped, but am happy overall! My spectator family also easily followed and intersected the trail along the way. If I ever run another marathon, I'll likely choose the Towpath. Thanks to the Director and all the other people who put this event together. My only suggestion would be to change the course so the last few miles are not run along a road and through a parking lot. Maybe the start could be moved further back or the first out and back lengthened.

A Unique Experience!!

I agree with all the other runners' comments. The train ride was roomy and warm, and coffee & drinks were available. The train was late but the race started almost immediately after we arrived. The race itself was pretty much as advertised. The official hotel was very nice. The surface of the trail was very good, mostly crushed limestone and some boardwalk. Water stops were more than adequate. The runners voted on which stop had the best theme; as a result there were some very interesting stops. Thanks to the volunteers! This is not a race for runners who require spectator support. Spectators are sparse because the run is mostly through the woods. The finish area could be improved by displaying instructions for the hotel shuttle and better EMT support. I am planning to run this race next year. It was just a beautiful run through the woods along the canal and river!

Awesome Marathon!!

This marathon was a great experience! The trail was scenic and great on your legs! The water stops were well equipped with enthusiastic volunteers, and more than they promised they would have. There was not a ton of places that spectators could see the race, but when they found you, they were great! The race was very well organized. Yes, the train was a few minutes late to the start, but the race director knew to wait for us. (luckily I stretched on the train) The race organizers were very responsive with answering questions prior to the race and I am grateful to all their help and support. Very well done! I would recommend this race to runners that are not looking for a big city race, but a small scenic race that has a very personal feel to it. I will definitely run this race again!

a wonderful experience

I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at the Towpath Marathon this weekend. I had read all the posts from previous years so there were no surprises. This is a small, mellow race through beautiful woodlands in Ohio and yes, there are still some organizational rough spots, but nothing major. (Note to race directors: start the race at 8:30! Why rush everyone to the starting line?) The aid stations were well staffed and clearly marked. In fact, there were signs about 50 yards ahead of each station alerting us that we were approaching a water stop. Water and Gatorade were available at each point, and gels, hard candy and orange slices were also available at a few others. The course was beautiful and there was nearly always something to look at: early fall colors, Canadian geese, historic remnants of old canal locks, etc. The trail itself was also surprisingly easy on the legs since its made of finely crushed gravel, although there were a few portions of asphalt. Crowd support is sparse but enthusiastic. Personally, I enjoyed the train ride to the starting line. I had an hour to chat with other marathoners and also to prepare myself mentally for the race. There was a short, quarter mile walk from the train to the starting line, but everyone around me jokingly called it our "warm-up." At the finish there was lots of free food / fruit and subs - and beer was available for a small price. (The first one was free to runners who filled out a quick questionnaire!) All in all, I was very impressed with this charming and beautiful race. I traveled 600 miles from Tennessee to run it, and I would definitely do it again.

great race

This was my second time running the Towpath Marathon and I have to say that it is one of my favorites. The course is great - especially for runners not accustomed to hard core trail running. Here you have the opportunity to basically run through the woods for 20+ miles and not worry about rocks/roots/deep mud or other hazards. The surface is pretty easy on the feet and knees and the scenery makes the point to point course zip by. If you like big crowds of runners or spectators this probably isn't the race for you but if you are comfortable running sort of by yourself (there are always other runners within sight) and enjoy the outdoors I highly recommend it. Obviously, it is hard for spectators to line the course as it takes place in a forest but the ones that are there (trailheads and along a road toward the end) are terrific. How nice is it to hear "you look great - really great" at mile 23. I think that the race is well organized despite some negative comments posted by other runners. First, when it comes down to it, it is only a footrace so just relax and have fun. Second, I think that the organizers do a great job. In the two years I have run this event I have found everyone extremely helpful and friendly. During the Race Director's speech before the start you could sense that everyone involved is really dedicated to making it a fun event. Volunteers are fantastic and the aid stations are more than adequate. Finally, the finish area is a kick with lots of food, a band, kegs and hot tubs. A nice place to hang out for a while after a good fall marathon. Anyway I highly recommend the Towpath Marathon. It is a nice event with a lot of heart. Do it fast or slow and enjoy the day.

Flat, Easy, Scenic Trail

This was my 27th marathon and my first time running the Towpath. The course is very, very flat, and is run mostly on a crushed limestone surface. There are some sections of asphalt and some long wooden bridges which are pretty slippery when wet. It's very scenic in the forest alongside the river and canal. The river was flowing north, the same way we were running so it must be slightly downhill. The organization was fine. We started 20 mintues late due to the late arrival of the train, but that was the only glitch I saw. There were plenty of water tables and port-a-johns and being a smaller race means no lines like you'll have at the mega-marathons like Chicago. There were no spectators to speak of except for the relay runners waiting at their exchanges. So if you're looking for a flat course that's easy on the body, this is a good one. If you need large crowds to cheer you on, look elsewhere. I'd certainly do this one again sometime. It's flat and it's friendly.

nice tree-lined course, soft and flat through the

The course is as advertised; soft, shaded, very level/flat through the Cuyahoga Trail. Weather was perfect for running: 50 degrees, overcast. Leaves were just starting to turn; a few weeks later would have been even more beautiful. Limited spectators, very few, but if you had family or friends as I did, they could follow you easily and cheer you on from many different spots. This will help because there were close to 0 spectators - except for wonderful volunteers at each aid station. Aid stations were well marked, spaced appropriately and had very friendly volunteers. Porta-pots were at many of the stops, and plenty of porta-pots at the start. The biggest negative I heard was the train ride, which was late arriving and caused late start. I read about this from last year and was dropped off at 7am. I had no problems. Obviously the train issue needs to be corrected. The other issue was medical support, especially at the end needs to be fixed immediately. There was a runner in need of medical attention/ambulance and it took way to long to get there. This should have been addressed before the event took place; very dangerous situation! If they can correct these problems and talk this race up, it could be a great experience

A nice small marathon

The course was beautiful, but I thought the discription of it on their website was a little misleading. They said "paved surface" in the first and last 3 miles, but there were lots of paved and concrete surfaces during the course. I liked the view, but constant changes in the surface really got me.... It was painful. So if you are not good with adjusting to surface changes, this will not be the one to run. The train to the start was late.... I didn't have any time to warm-up or to stretch. But people were nice and supportive.

small field, beautiful course, good runner support

If you want a nice laidback experience running through the woods for a nominal fee, this is it. This year had lots of first-timers. Plenty of runner support (water, Gatorade, Gu, toilets, etc.); the nature of the point-to-point course and small field means fewer spectators. The volunteers at the water stops were great!

Organization/staffing was extremely poor!

Rating the 2005 marathon: Organization was extremely poor; the staff lacked knowledge of the marathon itself; the shuttle bus driver had to 'ask' us if we knew how to get to the train station. The scenic train ride was excruciatingly painful: way too long and extremely slow. We arrived at the starting line train station at 8:10 (the offical race start was 8:00), had to walk a 1/2 mile to the starting line, quickly undress and drop our bags and have at it. We had only 10 minutes to stretch and mentally prepare. Aid/water Stations were located at 1 1/2-mile increments: the majority of runners are accustomed to the 2-mile interval. Finish line instructions were nonexistent: no signs/directions for the shuttle service back to the hotel/parking. Overall rating for organization: POOR! Course rating: excellent. Beautiful and enjoyable, the surface is marathon/training friendly (except for the mile 23 detour). If you are looking for a build-up marathon/mileage for another race, this is the perfect course. If you need spectator support, look elsewhere. I used this race as a build-up/mileage for the Marine Corps Marathon at the end of the month. Overall, I would suggest this: if you are a first-timer looking for the real marathon experience, look elsewhere! But, if you need mileage/dress rehearsal run this course... but I would recommend running it on your own time and save the 65 bucks. I have run well over 30 marathons; unfortunately this will not be one in which I run again.

woods are beautiful, but not to relieve self in

I would agree that the train experience was a bit taxing in itself, the last thing I want before a marathon. Also, bathrooms were waaaaaay too few and far between from about mile 2 until about mile 9 or 10. That definitely hurt my time and overall enjoyment as I held out mile after mile hoping for a porta-potty, until I finally broke down and went primitive in the woods. Of course running when you have to 'go' hurts, and slows ya down. Other than those gripes, the course is beautiful. You can't expect a lavish post-race party from such a small marathon, so what was available was just fine. Spend more time and money on helping runners during the race in 2005

Great small race

This was my first marathon and I was concerned it would be too small to make it exciting; however, it turned out to be a great experience. The park setting was mostly shady, and although few spectators, the volunteer support teams cheering along the way were very enthusiastic and make it fun. Also the water stops were excellent with great treats.

Great small race

I found the course to be as scenic as advertised and incredibly easy, especially compared to the Pittsburgh Marathon that was run this year. I thought the organization was very good and the volunteers and spectators as well. The beer garden, hot tubs, Subway subs and band made this the best finish area I have seen. A special thanks to the race director who was nice enough to send me my age-group trophy; I never expected that I might win. I recommend this marathon and plan to run it again.

Easy on the knees and the eyes

This course was awesome. I loved the path and the changing colors of the leaves. It ran along the historic towpath with the river, canal and trees all along the way. The history of the area is very interesting as well. If you enjoy being outdoors and solitude of nature, this is your race. As other said, not many spectators but my friends did find me and run with me off and on with 8 miles left (so they could get me when needed it the most!!!). It was peaceful and the point to point course, I thought, made it go by fast. Flat and fun. Don't do it if you need to by hyped up by lots of other people and need lots of 'comforts' like bathrooms/GU/bands at every mile. Do it to enjoy yourself running in a beautiful location loaded with history. I would do it again. The bathroom thing at the start was weird. If you drive yourself or are dropped off, it is a 1/4 mile walk to the start. Go to the start right away where they have more bathrooms, water and the equipment drop off. I think the train stops right at the start so there is even less walking.

Friendly runners, but not runner-friendly

This was a beautiful fall marathon, running through the woods as the leaves were at their peak. The start was frigidly cold though (perhaps in the 30s) - and 10 min late, thanks to the fact that the late stragglers had to cross the start line in order to get behind it. I didn't realize the first 3 miles would be uphill either. The concept of a scenic railroad ride to the start sounded lovely in theory, but in practice was not - the race was so early that it was pitch black outside until the very LONG rail ride was almost over. I'd recommend just driving to the start and getting some extra shut-eye. Spectators were great, although sometimes scarce, but there's a lot of runner camaraderie and chatting with other runners during the race. The first port-o-potty I saw was at mile 19! Also, they had cleaned up and put away all the post-race snacks (which ran out somewhat quickly) before the race had even closed after 6:30 - by 5:45 on the clock, all the tents were packed up. Not so nice for the slower runners to come in and find the 'celebration village' was being packed up as they came in. I got handed my medal still wrapped up in plastic, not put around my neck - I didn't even know what it was at first. They didn't have the promised long-sleeve T-shirts. Directions were posted at the last-minute and logistics were confusing also. Poor organization.

Dazzling course, super fans, lousy planning

Drove 4 hours to get here and went directly to packet pickup... which was a little hard to find with the small inaccuracies in the directions. Volunteers were less than knowledgable on details of the marathon - probably not their fault. 'Goody bag' contained nothing more than advertising and local race applications. Hardly incentive to return someday. Official starting time was not listed on the race day detail sheet included in the 'goody bag'. We returned to packet pick up to double check on the start time and no one seemed to know. Finally, when someone did give us an answer, she gave us the annoyed response 'it was on the website.' Sorry, we didn't bring the laptop. Start of marathon was almost a full mile from where we had to park. Mean man in white van with crackling loud speaker added to our incredulity. On the plus side, the course has to be the most scenic I have ever run, including Casino Niagra, Ontario Shore, and Erie. 5 stars on that. Easy access for fans and support crews, and though small in number, the fans were enthusiastic and knowledgable... like Duke Blue Devil fans. If you like to do things on your own or have an adventurous side, run this marathon. If you need structure and big crowds, don't.

Gorgeous Race

This is one of the most beautiful courses around. Run mostly through a National Park on a finely crushed limestone path, this a basically a trail race without the downside of roots, rocks and uneven footing. The trail follows an old canal system and parallels the Cuyahoga River. Flat and very scenic in the fall, this year's race was also wonderfully administered, from the circa 1950 train ride to the starting area, to the well staffed and frequent aid stations along the route and down to the lively and well provided for finishing area and shuttle service back to your car. I gave it just 3 stars for spectators only because it is a small race through a not easily accessible greenway. But the spectators who were there were wonderful, boisterous and supporting. This race is a gem.

Great Fall Marathon

This was my 7th marathon and what a superb experience. I researched the event prior to so there were no surprises. Didn't expect huge fan support and there wasn't. But, those in attendance were spread throughout the course due to relay teams and road intersections and they were very enthusiastic! Train ride to the start was very neat! Course was beautiful, interesting and flat. I can appreciate that some like hills, but for me, going the 26.2 is an achievement enough. So, flat is good. The finish line, organization, food (plentiful) and cold beer were just great too. And, unlike some of the larger events the finish area was not congested with other people. All in all will place it on my fall calender to do again. Would highly recommend!

Great course, nice for nature lovers

For runners who love the outdoors, you can't beat this course. This is my fifth, and probably my most enjoyable. The organization was good, aid stations were better than I thought they would be - there were bananas, oranges, and Gu's being handed out at points later in the course. There were spectators, but I wouldn't say they were out in full force. Overall a great local marathon. Would do it again.

good for the self-motivated - fast course

This is a good marathon for people who absolutely love tiny marathons, or people who want nothing other than to set a personal best. The spectators were mostly enthusiastic, but they are very few and very far between. Aid stations were excellent. The course was about the width of a sidewalk, but it really doesn't matter since there were so few runners. My two suggestions for organizers are to ditch the train (it adds nothing to the experience since at 6:30am it is pitch black out anyway), and have someone in the finisher's area to help remove chips from shoes, as most marathons do. A nice tiny race, but I'd recommend it only for locals, which it seemed to be anyway.

Beautiful, flat course throught a national park!

The parking area at Howe Meadow for the start of the race only had 4 porta-johns! They were in a very dangerous location, on the road, and facing the road with lots of traffic. Long lines and doors opening after use almost hit cars passing by. Very poorly planned. There should have been signs telling runners where the other 15 porta-johns were located and where the start of the race was. The course was beautiful and flat. Great water stops. Long stretches without supporters, but the ones there were GREAT! Finish line was poorly planned. Had to look for water and no support help for tired runners.

YEECH! AID STATIONS NOT AS ADVERTISED

This was my first marathon. Aid stations were promised every 1.75 miles with 'water, Gatorade, GU, hard candy, fruit and vaseline.' There was GU at one stop in the first 9 miles, no fruit, no hard candy, no vaseline. We definitely needed the bananas. At 11 miles, at an aid station with once again only Gatorade and water, the guy radioed ahead and we were told no fruit until the end!!! Fortunately, this was wrong - a couple of miles later we did get bananas. That was it, though. No more. No vaseline except in the beginning of the race. I had counted on it and didn't bring my own (hey, it was promised) so I ended up with hellish chafing from my sports bra. The aid stations were supposed to be open for six hours. We saw them packing up at 4 1/2. There were also forks in the road and NO signs to tell us which way we should go. We were running slow, so there was no one around us to point it out. We were forced to look for 'runner trash' like GU packets. One wrong turn cost us more than 20 minutes. We could've been lost forever and no one would've known, because after 13 miles, the bike patrol disappeared and never returned. I also concur about the bathrooms. My friend had to go and there were none for 10 miles or more. We had to get off the trail, go down a little hill and we lost another 15 minutes because by then she was so sick... I'm very disappointed.

great first marathon

An absolutley beautiful course. The majority of the race is on a path through a national forest with lots of trees and along a river. Fall colors were amazing. Crowds weren't huge (due to being in the middle of a national park/forest) but were enthusiastic. Great first time marathon. Very flat course too. Will definitely do it again.

Best course in the world - a gravel path in woods

You don't see many spectators, but the tranquility of running through a national park, on a gravel path most of the way, more than compensates. A small race but well run.

The path is great!

I will start with the positive: The limestone trail and fall trees were wonderful to look at for 4+ hours. The hot tubs and massage were nice too. However, the lack of 'facilities' was very shocking, disappointing, and painful (I kept hoping there would be something available). Also the line for food was slow and with all of the family members in line it took forever for us to get a couple perogies and brown lettuce. There were no cookies, granola or other fun post-race food. And everyone's family members were sitting in the chairs. My friend and I stood to eat our food. First-time Towpath runner beware: no crowd support or entertainment!

Beautiful, fast, soft

What I like about this marathon is: * The course: run on the crushed limestone surface (after an initial 2 miles on the road) of the Ohio & Erie canal towpath which parallels the Cuyahoga River within the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The last two years the autumn colors have been spectacular. At several points the sunlight filtering through the yellowing leaves of maple trees makes you feel like you are running down a golden corridor as leaves float down to the towpath trail. The surface of the towpath is nearly as firm but much gentler on your joints than pavement. * The organization: You can park near the starting line (no shuttles unless you're on a relay). You can register on race-day. The food and drink before and after the race were plentiful. The water stops were stocked with water and Ultima every one to two miles and had Hammer Gel, bananas, and oranges as several stops in the middle and later parts of the race. * The size: With about 450 marathoners and another 150 relay runners at the starting line there isn't much opportunity to feel crowded. If you enjoy the crowd support of Chicago or Boston, this race isn't for you. Most of the way there are no spectators. Where roads cross the towpath you may see a half to a full dozen spectators. At relay exchange points and the turnaround point the crowd swells to maybe 50 spectators. It is a quiet and peaceful marathon. * Bonus features I haven't personally used include hot tubs at the finish and post-race massages. This year the Towpath Marathon was a day after the Akron Marathon. Next year they will be a week apart. The last two years had good weather. In 2003 we had a one minute rain spritz and the wind was a little too breezy at times, but overall conditions were excellent.

An excellent event

This race was a great experience. The course is absolutely beautiful, especially with all the leaves changing colors in the fall. It's completely flat, which was a little strange for a runner used to training on the roads of central PA. The tradeoff for the scenery is that there aren't many fans, but the ones that did show up were very enthusiastic and supportive. It's a smaller race, so sometimes I felt like I was running alone in the woods, which was kind of nice. There were other times though when the Towpath got a little crowded, especially near the turnaround, but it wasn't a big problem. All the runners were very friendly and polite. The organizers did an excellent job. The volunteers at the aid stations were very helpful. No unpleasant surprises, except that it was the first time I ever drank Ultima, which does not taste as good or have quite the amount of calories as Gatorade - it's something I'll have to prepare for the next time I run a race with Ultima, I guess. The post-race celebration and food was very nice too. I would definitely recommend this race.

Beautiful course - why a hill at the end?

I loved the course, trails. Beautiful time of year for the race with the trees turning for the winter. Great spectators where they could be located. However, after running a relatively flat 26 miles, I didn't feel like running up a hill to the finish line. You may say 'adrenaline!' But no, it was quite discouraging. There was also a lack of 'facilities' along the course. :(

First-class marathon in a beautiful setting

I ran the 2003 Towpath Marathon and found it to be a first-rate, first-class race. The course is a beautiful trail run through colorful autumn trees - a great experience! The organizers did a fantastic job - great food, hot tubs, well-staffed course and aid stations. This run is a definite repeat!

Great race for those who don't want crowds

I love this race, mostly because I do my long runs on the Towpath, located in the Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area. It's a great surface to run on, and the course is flat. The organizers do a fine job running it. Expect only 1,200 or so runners, and the fan base is thin.

Great course & a wonderful experience!!

This marathon is truly a memorable experience. I found the trail to be very easy on the legs as well as on the senses! The organization was good with ample water stops and post-race refreshments. It was wonderful to run in such a beautiful environment, especially in the fall. It was also nice running in a smaller marathon that did not involve all of the hassels and pressures of the bigger races. I certainly plan on including this marathon in my yearly race rotation. It is a very unique and special event that I highly recommend to everyone!

Wonderful, low-key marathon

Great course, scenic, the crushed limestone was easy on the legs and the post race goomies - beer & perogies were to die for! I would do this race again in a heartbeat! Great organization and great volunteers. There's nothing bad that I can say about my experience.

The most beautiful course you'll ever run

I've run all over the planet, and although there are many beautiful places to run, none surpass the area in and around the Cuyahoga Valley National Park during autumn. This race is small, but very well organized. The surface is fairly soft. I can't recommend it enough.

Overall great experience!

The course was beautiful and mostly flat, but had a few nice hills to make it interesting. There were a few areas with crowds and that was so nice to have that kind of support along the way:)

Great experience

Overall great experience. The course was perfect for my expectations as I wanted to run a comfortable race without any big time goals. The course is very scenic and quiet with little crowd support which I don't need to enjoy a race. Organization had a lot of personal feel as everyone was very welcoming and gracious. Post-race feed was really nice as everyone was welcome to eat and as much as they wanted. This is a 'small marathon' which allows for this type of support from the directors and volunteers. I especially liked seeing every marathoner in the field with the out and back format. My only complaints were plastic water cups (you can't squeeze them to get a drink) and some mismarked miles which we never did figure out. I would recommend this race to anyone not needing crowd support as it was a nice course with excellent support.

A great run through the woods

This course is about as flat as it gets (except, as noted earlier, the evil incline to the finish line!) Nice surface, great organization, and excellent people. If there's a downside to this race, it's the fact that you're running almost exclusively through the woods...trees, trees and more trees! As a result, there are only certain places where spectators can and do line the course. You're by yourself for some very long stretches. In the grand scheme of things, though, that hardly matters.

Nice race but I got drenched

This was a well-organized race. The course was scenic and flat. The volunteers did a great job. Unfortunately the rain was not under the control of the race organizers. About an hour and 45 minutes into the run there was a gusty downpour that lasted for several miles. It totally soaked my t-shirt, shorts, socks, and shoes. It also created many large unavoidable puddles on the trail. My hopes of running a PR went 'down the drain' and I finished 18 minutes slower than my goal. Of course weather problems are not the fault of the race organizers. They should be commended for providing a very good race that is not crowded and which travels through some really nice wooded areas.

Beautiful and peaceful setting that's flat!

What a wonderful little race. Well organized by the folks from Runner's Supply. A great shirt, wonderful food and volunteers, and a nice, homey atmosphere. Not commercialized at all. It is kind of the perfect fit for the National Park you run through. The only complaint at all was the finish location at the end of the 2000 race. After nothing but flat for 26 miles, the last part was almost straight uphill before a slight slope into the finish chute. Arrrgghh!! That was unexpected, but beside that, it has been my favorite marathon to date (of 4).

Scenic, Flat and Easy on the Legs

The course is mostly flat on a crushed limestone path which was a very forgiving surface. The aid stations were well stocked. The trees were gorgeous. Not alot of spectators.

Great Scenery, Great People, Great Run

The Towpath Marathon is near tops- fab course winding along the river, super organizers (you can even sign up race day!), and strong support from the Northeast Ohio crowds at key road intersections along the race. I've run Boston, Cape Cod, Copenhagen, and Prague-- and this was really the best experience. (Truly this is non-biased,, although my hometown is Akron, Ohio)

Beautiful Course

The best thing about the Towpath Marathon is the beautiful, scenic course. With the autumn leaves and the canal all around you, I don't think that there's a prettier course in the Ohio area. The course is flat too!
