I LOVED THIS RACE

This race was an absolute blast. I loved that everyone had the same goal - qualify for Boston. The first two loops before the big 8 loops had some tight turns where things had to slow down a little, but luckily is was in the beginning and we got it out of the way first. The aid stations were perfect, the elite bottles were perfect, the day of the race was perfect, the spactators and race organizers were perfect, and I even ran 16 minutes faster than my BQ standard, and PRed by 10 minutes (this was my third marathon). I would highly recommend this race. My only quarrel was that the path was still open to the public, so I had to dodge some recreational runners and bikers as the day got later. It did not slow me down at all, but when you are on mile 23 of a marathon and have to think about moving out of someone's way, it got on my nerves a tiny bit. I am so thankful for this racing staff for providing a great race with a great course! Thank you Last Chance BQ2!

This was a clean, simple, and powerful course

This was my third marathon ever and I won the race with a PR of 2:37:53, seeded time (2:58:25-Chicago Marathon 2023). The course was clean because there were no major cracks on the pathway, the organization team did a great job picking up plastic cups and litters from the course, and there were trees all around the 3mile loop course that provided plenty of shade throughout the race (not to mention the beautiful river that you crossed over every lap). There was a biker who led us through the first three loops (2 small ones and 1 big loop) and there were clear directions. The course was simple: 8 major loops with 2 small loops at the beginning and it is all pretty much flat. The course is powerful because of the amazing spectators, and organization especially when you start to feel fatigued, they pick you up with their encouraging cheers; the elite water bottle station made the need to refuel easy on the mind; even the 90 degree turns weren't as bad as I thought they would be. It was a blast! Thanks to all who work to put this exceptional race together. Boston here I come!

Great race!

Great course with so much positive energy! Very pretty loop, I was worried I would get bored doing the loop but that wasn't the case whatsoever. Highly reccomend

Great race and well organized!

The organizers do a great job of making this race one where you should hopefully attain a Boston qualifying time. Conditions were perfect this year (2024). Given the date I was fearful of warm weather but it was ideal conditions.

Flat and Fast - Helpful Volunteers - Great Day

Enjoyed the shady tree-lined bike trail, aid stations and reoccurring fans at the closing stretch of each loop. Also a big thanks to Brad, one of the volunteers for the great encouragement to get me across the finish line on time!

Best race for BQ chasers

This race is outstanding. Everyone who is running is focused on that one goal, and everyone respects the mission they are on. The race from race director down to the volunteers are top notch. I can't say enough positive things about this race.

Perfect BQ-oriented marathon

OK: The course is a little monotonous. But that's the ONLY thing negative I can say about this marathon. Great organization, super-professional pacing, and while boring, even the course is perfectly built to support your BQ. Perhaps the single best thing is the elite bottle tables, where you can get your personal pre-mixed drinks and gels every three miles. This is SO valuable in preventing a bonk and allowing you to PR. I'd totally recommend this marathon. It's worth traveling to if You're serious about getting a BQ.

Perfect organization Will come back for another PR

I am a race director myself and have run 27 marathons around 10 countries. I know what I like and do not like in a race. This one, was by far the best race I have ever been on. Everything. From the clear communication about course, parking, hydration and fuel during race day, down to execution on race day. Really, there is not a single suggestion to improve. I love the event and without hesitation will come back in the spring for an attempt at a 3:02 marathon and personal record. The director had thought of everything. Even a bottle marking station with color tape and sharpies. I was going to do that at home with my own supplies but once I saw that station was just amazed. Pacers are flawless. I followed the 3:07 pacer and he did perfect splits of 21:30 each lap. Exactly what we needed for an even split race. After 5 laps, another pacer came, ran with us about half a lap and took over with fresh legs to secure the success of the group. I am 100% sure that without that pacing groups, I would not have achieved my Boston Qualifying race. The course was beautiful. River views and a simple rectangle to follow. I liked the bridges and the few short hills. I personally think that it keeps your legs fresh as you have a chance to use different muscles. In reality, according to my Garmin there is a negative elevation gain, so the course is flat and even slightly downhill. The VIP bottles are extraordinary. I have never seen that before. Just using that resource wisely will help you achieve a BQ or personal best. They have a person at each table pushing forward each bottle for you. Completely amazing the attention to detail. Love that all volunteers seemed happy to be there and were wearing a sharp jacket and hat. The full atmosphere is amazing. I highly recommend this race to everybody and if I could I would bring this type of high-level perfectly-executed kind of event to a city near me.

Organization well-done & volunteers are stellar!

I am very grateful for everyone who made this event possible and memorable for me! Outstanding team work! Well organized at each stage to make sure that runners are not only reaching but exceeding their goals; communication/information before/during/after the marathon was seamless; perfect timing on the start; volunteers/spectators were stellar; continuously cheering up making you feel like you are an elite runner; pace leaders were extremely/super supportive; very neat town, the course area is a balanced combination of shady and open giving you a break from the sun and mostly flat! I call this as a high quality service; I strongly recommend...

3-mile loop was perfect for refueling

3-mile loop was perfect for picking up self-prepared fueling bottle. It proved to be essential for the high humidity day. 14 min. BQ, no complaint here.

This race is phenomenal! Can't recommend enough!

This race was incredible! The organization was top notch, the pacers were amazing and the overall energy was awesome. I loved the flat course and all the volunteers along the way giving out water, Gatorade, and snacks. I would recommend this race to anyone looking to qualify for Boston! Thank you BQ.2 for a phenomenal race experience!

Great race for running a BQ time

The race lived up to it's claim that they give you the best chance to run a Boston qualifying time. The organizers and fellow runners provided that extra motivation to run my first BQ time. A good course, well organized race, and an ample number of friendly volunteers. I had a great experience!

I got my BQ, but I didn't love running loops

Race was extremely well organized and race director was very engaged. Communications were great. Plenty of parking and toilets. I personally found running 8 loops to be very challenging psychologically and I would not run it again, but I did achieve my goal (a BQ!) and I would recommend this race if you are comfortable running loops. Be advised this is NOT a closed course and there are bikes and dog walkers on the same path.

Easily qualified for my 3rd Boston Marathon!

Just a terrific marathon, period! So well-organized, so well laid out, and so fun, this is the Marathon I want to run again and again. The Last Chance fall BQ Marathon gives you the chance to qualify for two Boston Marathons: this year's plus the following year's Boston Marathons! The 'Elite' bottles really ensure you have what you need and prefer (Nuun anyone?!), and the Pacers get you around the course on time. 'Nuff said.

Overall a fantastic race!

Overall this race is awesome for anyone looking to BQ the last weekend before registration. The course is set up great allowing you to have your own bottle station every 3 miles. The signs are easy to follow on the course with great energy from volunteers and spectators at the start/finish area. The loop course is simple with a variety of views on a flat terrain. I enjoyed this race so much! I appreciated all the emails and information prior to the race. The race director, volunteers and pacers were all so friendly and helpful. The location is easy to get to. If you're looking to qualify I would recommend this race!

I LOVED this race! I'll be back!

I ran the 2022 Last Chance BQ and loved the course (most of the course has a wonderful canopy of trees which is awesome for shade and O2) and the ease of logistics. Big city races can feel like a chore just to get to the start line but this race is logistically seamless and so friendly. The only reason I gave the course 4 stars instead of 5 is because it is a bit narrow at some points and can be hard to run the tangents. If you're not trying to run tangents, it's 5 stars :) What makes the course so great for fast running (long straights in tree-canopied areas) makes it a little less conducive to crowd support on one of the sides. However, because the course is a loop, you get a LOT of crowd support very frequently - I saw my 'support team' 7 times which is more than I have at bigger races. The best part was how friendly the race director and all of the BQ team and volunteers are - they clearly love what they are doing and are so supportive. It feels special for each person (rather than bigger races where you are literally just a number). The pacers from Dick Pond were really enthusiastic and hit our splits like a metronome. I would recommend BQ2 to anyone who is trying to find all the optimizers available to make that BQ happen!

Awesome race. Loved the course and support!

The only disappointment I had was the lack of respect I witnessed from some of the runners throwing their cups on the ground vs in the trash cans.

Inspirational Event, Suboptimal Course

I went to this race with, like everyone else, the explicit goal of qualifying for Boston. That meant under 3:10 for me. (I got 3:10:11, so I missed slightly.) The organizers and pacers are devoted to that cause, and I appreciate their work. One pacer even came back to help me with about a mile to go. That was kind, and I wish I could thank him personally. Further, the sense of camaraderie given the shared challenge was inspirational. The fans got to enjoy plenty of interaction with the loop course, and they lifted our spirits. However, there were problems with the course. In particular, there was a lot of traffic on the path: bikes, dog walkers, casual runners, and lapped runners. The congestion impeded a natural run and was a bit out of hand at times. Further, even without the congestion, there were many sharp turns and rises and falls (exacerbated by eight laps). The course is relatively flat, but it is not pancake flat. Of my group, pacing for 3:06, about 75 percent did not get the 3:10. From memory, four stayed with the pacers the full race - at least as far as I could see, since I fell back a bit after 20 miles. If you are in shape and shooting for your qualification time, you can do it here. The atmosphere is a lot of fun, but do not expect a cakewalk. Also, water load before the race, because we were all sweating like crazy as the heat got up. You might want to take advantage of the personalized drink stop as well. I did not, but you need all the hydration you can get.

Great and FUN Family Friendly Race

I had such a blast running this race. I travelled in from Nashville, TN and felt like the event, packet pick-up, and pre-race warm-up went so well. I definitely want to come back to run the race again! And, might I add, I successfully got a 30-minute PR to BQ! YAYYYYY!!!

One of the best marathons I have EVER DONE!

This was my 15th marathon and first time doing a loop course. Let me tell you, if you are on the fence about a loop course this is your sign to sign up now. There are so many people around the course cheering you on and giving you speed. At the end of each loop a huge crowd with great music is there to count you down and give you the energy for the next loop each time. I will absolutely do this one again! I BQ'd with 4 minutes to spare. Flat as a pancake. The people are the nicest in the world. Over 10 starts for this race.

Beautiful setting for well organized small race

This race is: - no stress - well organized and run - laps on beautiful course, adjacent to river, runs both sides in loop with bridge crossings to keep interesting, - good shade - relatively flat - perfect loop size for fuel/hydration stations - almost exclusively experienced runners - best use of small pace groups any race, by far - minimal distractions, despite occasional well mannered bicyclists and shared path with small farmers market to keep interesting and focused - highest ratio race staff/support/Marshalls to runners

2nd time running this race. Great experience.

Well organized race. If you're looking to qualify for Boston, this is the race to run. Great support from pacers, spectators and other runners. Great support on the course with three options for hydration and a station for gels. The course is flat and on a 3.2mile(ish) loop. Don't be discouraged by the loop as it disappears. Everytime I've run it, that has been my experience. Great race. Looking forward to 2022!

Absolutely awesome race!

I was completely impressed with this race. It was done so well. The race staff was patient, kind, and so organized. There was wonderful support along the course from race staff to spectators and the "race village" was simple yet had everything. It was an easy in and out to start and after the finish. The loops did not become daunting and effort was made to make the race as personal as possible for each runner. Definitely worth a shot!

No Pacers for my age group

I was super disappointed in this race. I was hoping to have support by the pacers, but there wasn't one running anything close to what I wanted. I assumed there would be a 3:45 or 3:44 pace group, but there was only a 3:39 (way too fast) and a 3:49 (too slow). Needless to say I didn't qualify for Boston. Will never do it again.

17th marathon done and one of the best

I've done 6 Chicago, 4 Boston, 3 Madison, 2 Chicagoland, Erie (PA), and now LCBQ2! It's one of the best. No nonsense, easy to check in, bathrooms, start, etc all very easy. The loops are straightforward and mostly shady. Lots of water stops and having your own drink stop is so great! Also since they hand out gels at each loop you don't have to weigh yourself down carrying a ton of gels, always my problem in the marathon! The course is narrow so you don't waste crucial steps and it's easy to run the tangents. Only ran .1 extra compared to the .4-.5 extra I run in Chicago It's a quiet and peaceful course when you need it but cheering and spectators when you do. You can really get in the zone mentally which is important to me. I ran with the 3:49 pace group. They were excellent. I stayed with them until mile 20. I chatted a bit with all of them and they were really helpful, checking in with us, inspiring us, etc. At mile 20, I surged ahead - glad I ran conservatively for the first 20 because the sun did start to get warm. Dropped down to about an 8:20-25 pace to close out the race strong! Yes, I trained well at 60-72 miles a week average with speed work, tempos and hills, so I felt well-prepared, but starting slow and not hitting the wall helped me get a BQ with a 3 minute + cushion. A good strategy is to stay with the pacers until 20 and then break away. Those that didn't kind of burned out and I passed a lot of people. I would definitely do this again. The finish area food is just fine, nothing to write home about, but who cares? I was riding high on my BQ! I'd definitely do this race again.

Flat, Fast BQ course

Great race!! Well organized & course was as advertised: flat & fast. Can't say enough about pacers. I ran with the 3:50 group, which meant they were targeting a 3:49 & they were spot on. There seemed to be a natural flow that some parts of the loop were faster/slower than others but overall pace was perfect. After a couple loops I just checked out and ENJOYED the run!!! I am usually checking my watch at every mile marker, trying to bank some time, etc. But, the pacers were SO good that I just enjoyed running in our group. At the 1/2 we were 20sec ahead of pace & stayed right there. Everyone - race organizers, pacers, volunteers and runners could not have been friendlier or nicer. I flew out here to BQ and did and would not hesitate to go back. Oh and the elite hydration tables were awesome. I usually slosh gatorade up my nose & all over myself trying to get a precious couple gulps down. Having my own water bottle available each loop? Heaven!! I actually drank my Gatorade instead of decorating myself with it! Loop course allowed ample hydration stations and crowd support. Initially I was dreading passing the finish line on each loop but it was great - lots of crowd support and many 'shout outs' over the PA to individual runners and pace groups. Overall, I highly recommend this marathon.

Every Runners Dream Course

This race was so well organized which was a huge help in keeping my race day nerves down. The course was fairly flat and the perfect amount of scenic to keep my mind occupied for the mental battle it takes to run a marathon. Although I was taken down on mile 23 by a torn MCL (bummer), I will definitely be back at this race for many years to come! All around great race!!

Amazing race!!

Really, really loved this race. The organizers were fantastic. The course was flat and easy. The race was run like a top marathon - even though there were only 300 participants. I have only ever run the NYC marathon before, and so I can't stress enough how well this race was organized. SO many things can go wrong, and it can be hard to get everything right with only 300 people paying to participate. But BQ2 did! Bathrooms were accessible; there were 16 water stops total; everything went smoothly. The eight loops meant you had pretty constant support from fans, too. Due to construction, a last minute change had to be implemented, and BQ2 got that done and kept the course as an official qualifier. Can't imagine how stressful that must have been, so thank you thank you for everything! My *one* suggestion for improvement would be the pacers. For the 3:30 group (one of the biggest - 20 or 30 of us), we started with two pacers who pretty quickly had a significant gap. This left us runners questioning which pace group we should be with. I wanted to play things smart and start out slow, so I stuck with the second pacer. But the other group was running maybe 10-20 seconds faster, which is huge! And no one really knew if they were going fast, or we were going slow, or both. Also, the pacers switched out every 6-8 miles, and the pacers coming in weren't exactly sure if we were a few seconds ahead or behind - which, once again - huge, when it comes to executing this race. You don't want to get stuck at mile 23 realizing you have to *increase* your speed by 10 or 20 seconds when you are just hanging in. At mile 20, our pacer left and told us we'd have another pacer at mile 23 & but these are crucial miles! So the few of us left with her were a bit shell shocked. To be fair - I am not blaming anyone's performance on this, but I did think we'd either have 1 pacer for the entire race or two pacers for half a marathon each. If the two initial pacers hadn't split into 'fast' and 'slow' groups, this also wouldn't have been a problem. In the end, only 2 out of 11 in my age group BQ'd, and 4 dropped out. Once again - NOT blaming the pacers. So easy to blame everyone but yourself in these types of things. But 20 miles in, body dying and not sure if you're going to be able to take another step...having your super amazing supportive pacer tell you she's leaving was not a fun surprise! But let's be honest - I was dead at that point anyway, so it didn't make much of a difference. But it could have for someone who was just hanging in. All in all, once again - amazing race. All of the pacers, organizers, and volunteers were so, so fantastic. Thank you so much for putting this on!!

Great support to get you to your BQ!

What a great race! I attended the 2019 Last Chance BQ.2 Chicagoland marathon all the way from the North Dallas, TX area. This race was such a positive experience from packet pick-up to the many BQ signs to take photo opts at the finish line. The course support was amazing and the volunteers kept us well-hydrated. I will be back if I need a qualifying time again! Thank you BQ.2!

good course, friendly organizers, great crowd!

Even without the focus on qualifying for boston, this marathon would be a joy to run! The organizers and pace runners were helpful, the crowd was very enthusiastic and the other runners were all super-friendly (cuz they're all there for the same reason you are: to get that BQ). And that's to say nothing of the route! It runs north and south along the river so you have nice long straightaways in the cool refreshing air, perfect for building that momentum. I am happy to say i hit my BQ and hope to be in boston in april 2018... but i may come back next year just because it was such a great experience!

Great race, especially for a BQ

I would give the course 4 stars only because there are a couple small issues that are worth knowing. It's not a closed course so there are occasional cyclists, runners, walkers, etc to deal with during your race. Also, the southern bridge on the route is surfaced with older wooden planks which can be tricky to run over. The whole bridge undulates a bit underfoot and sometimes that can throw off your rhythm. Definitely a minor issue! The organization of the race is fantastic! It's laid back, the volunteers, pacers and organizers are awesome. Bottle tables were an incredible feature, and the water/gatorade aid station volunteers were top notch. Many smaller races have volunteers who can't handle the cup exchange, but that was not the case with this race - these people were pros! Spectators were light along the majority of the course, but at the end of each loop, there was a healthy crowd! If you bring supporters along with you, they will see you at least 8 times on their way! All in all a great race that requires minimal mental preparation. You can just get out there and run even splits or gentle negative splits. I thought I would hate the repetition but it was actually a great feature. I started to feel the course more by laps than by miles, which made it much more palatable. I was able to just sort of tune out the mileage and just lock on my pace and nutrition/hydration plan. Oh, and the weather was perfect, especially after running in the heat all summer. I would HIGHLY recommend this race to BQ. I easily got my BQ by more than 6 minutes without having to push myself to the absolute limit.

The Road to Boston!

In my 80+ marathons around the country, I try not to duplicate a race, but I'll always make an exception for this race! For the past 3 years in September, I've had the pleasure of running this FAST, FLAT course/race, "America's #1 Boston Qualifier" (around a beautiful lake) in Geneva, IL and in the process, they helped me record 3 BQ's and 2 PRs! So if you're looking for a fast course to set a PR, record a BQ and/or secure your entry to the Boston Marathon, please consider running BQ.2 Marathon Races! The Race Officials, Dave Sheble, and FUN volunteers will give you every advantage that they can to help you to your best qualifying time possible! Everything about the race is designed to get you into Boston with a time far enough below your qualifying time to make the final cut. They also offer Pacers running 4-mins BELOW the official qualifying standard for Boston. For example, if your qualifying time is 3:30, the pace leader will be running to finish in 3:26. This will give you the best chance of securing a spot at Boston! They also offer "Elite water bottle tables", that's right! Pre-fill your own bottles with your favorite, personalized race drink and set them at the assigned table. During the run, simply grab, drink and throw your bottle in the drop zone where volunteers will put them back on the table for your next lap! They also offer EASY packet pickup and VERY convenient FREE parking! Parking is literally across the street and approx.. 3-min walk to the start line! Hope to see you in 2018! Happy running everyone!!

Great race to get that last minute BQ!

After not even coming close to requalifying at Boston 2017, I immediately started looking for a way to get that BQ for 2018. I settled on this race because it gave me plenty of time to train (it is run the last weekend before Boston registration begins) and it was 2 hours and 45 minutes from my house. I didn't know what to expect, but this was really a wonderful race. First, the organization was great. Packet pickup was a total breeze, even the morning of the race. Parking was a 400M from the start. The race guide put out by the organizers made everything crystal clear-everything was exactly as described. The course was very good. It is 8 laps of about 5.3K which worried me slightly-I thought it would be psychologically more difficult, but in reality it wasn't. There were a lot of spectators who really cheered for everyone, and because you see them 8 times, you almost feel like you get to know them by the end. There are elite water bottle tables and bottle drops for all of the participants! This was great for me because I need a higher sodium drink than what most races provide. The course is mostly flat-but not pancake flat, it has a few little rollers but probably none more than 3 meters / 10 feet of elevation change. I gave the course 4 stars instead of 5 only because there is a very slight camber on part of the route on the east side of the river that may have irritated my right calf, and there are a few areas where the pavement on west side of the river has been pushed up a little by tree roots and when you are tiring and your stride is a little off, you could trip. The pacers for this race are dead on pace-the whole point of this race is to get you to Boston, so the pacers run 4 minutes ahead of each BQ time so if you finish with them you should get in. There are on the lookout for potential cheaters too-they use both bib and shoe tags, and have their own photographers in multiple places around the loop. There are split timers by both ends of the long, narrow route, and in the middle is a big river. The route is approximately 80% shaded which was very helpful on a day that got a little bit warm. The finish line atmosphere was intense-you got to see people ecstatic because they met their goal, and people destroyed because they just missed it. Me? I ran more than 5 minutes below my BQ time and couldn't be happier. 59% of the runners BQ'd this year. I highly recommend this race. Note: You have to qualify to be in this race by having a BQ in the last two years, or less than 10 minutes off your BQ in the last year, or a half marathon under you BQ pace in the past year.

Best Marathon for Serious Runners

Last Chance BQ.2 Chicagoland Marathon is an incredible event for serious runners who want a unique and special marathon experience. The organizers do everything possible to create the fastest race conditions possible. The pacers were focused and right on the money. The support crew and volunteers offered tremendous encouragement. The 8 laps pass very quickly, especially as you count them down in the second half; 4, 3, 2 and 1 to go. But the best part is meeting so many dedicated and serious runners all focused on doing their best and earning a Boston number. I have run this race twice and earned BQs both times. I have run 48 marathons and 22 Bostons, and this race stands out as one of the most fun and enjoyable. Thank you to my fellow runners and to the organizers for all your efforts in making this race so special.

Well organized race, designed to help you BQ

I liked this race a lot (and this was my 12th marathon). Don't be intimidated by the loop course - I found it to be really helpful. I broke the race into 8 loops instead of 26 miles, and felt that it was less daunting. Seriously, mile 20 crept up on me because I was focusing more on the laps. After a few loops, you know what to expect. The weather (at least this year) was great - 50s throughout, and most of the course is shaded. The east end of the course is a slight downhill, and the west end is a slight uphill. Generally it's flat, but it is slightly rolling. No big hills. Crowd support was good - very few patches of no spectators. This race did help me to BQ. The cons - the course gets a little tight, especially in the early miles (larger groups around the pacer) and the later miles (passing slower groups). My suggestion would be for there to be better communication about staying to the right, two abreast. Some runners had their headphones in, music full blast and I had to run on the grass around them because they were oblivious to what was going on around them, even if I yelled 'on your left'. I would also suggest deeper aid stations. There are two on the course - about one every 1.5 miles. But the volunteers for water were only about 4 deep. In the early laps, there were a lot of people in my pace group and I missed water cups because there were not enough volunteers to service the runners passing by. I would say 6 volunteers deep for water should do it. I would also suggest better communication about discarding bottles at the elite bottle tables. On several laps, runners would take a sip of their bottles and throw them directly in the path of other runners, which is a hazard. Lastly, I would suggest more staffing for safe crossing at S Batavia Ave. When we arrived there was only one person, and my spectators expressed concern that there was no one there at certain points throughout the race to help them cross. I would run this race again, and my suggestions above are constructive criticisms (for the communication issues, these are addressing runner behaviors, which are not the fault necessarily of race organizers). This is a well-structured marathon that seemed to go by very quickly. It's intended to help you qualify for Boston, which I did.

Great job.

Packet pickup at a quality specialty run store where I could grab gels, etc. Race Director answered all my questions. The volunteers at aid stations were pros. Especially, my guy at the elite table #01. Bottle #40001 was at the ready for me each time. Bless you, Table Dude! Pretty course. Nice call outs at each finish line pass. Especially cool: double duty on timing chips (on bib AND on shoe).

Not a fan

Many people drooped during the race. I did not like the 8 loops. It was raining and some parts by the bridges were slippery. I was not fan or the organizers either. They were not that friendly. They also suggested a restaurant for dinner the night before, it was a disappointment. Bad service, and took an hour and half to get my pasta. I was not the only one mad about the restaurant. Our pacers alternated, at one point I lost my group and I lost count of how many more loops I needed to run. The main issue is that they marketed as a high percentage BQ race but that is not true. many people DNF the race. Not a BQ race for sure. The narrow pathway, the not well maintain road and the rain did not help. I will not do it again. I rather run a proper all out race.

How do I love this marathon? Let me count the ways

Everything to be said about this wonderful marathon has already been said, but I have to add my praise. The good: Perfect organization, plenty of support, volunteers of quality that you will not find anywhere else (sorry, Boston, yours are good too), eight laps on a pretty course that really reduces the mental strain. Make no mistake, you have to train and put in the hard work, but this race will get you to Boston if you do. The bad: Nothing to say here. I should mention that a light drizzle kept spectators away. The 5 stars really were for the rocking volunteers. The ugly: Alas, the shirt. Court jester style. Recap: Very pleasant racecheck, PRcheck, BQ? Oh my, yes!

Awesome experience, top of the line marathon!

After my first attempt at a BQ for Boston 2016 left me with only 56 seconds ahead of my time, I started looking for another race to give myself a better chance at punching my ticket to Boston. I had heard about this race from my Run Coach who ran it in 2014, the inaugural year, and had nothing but incredibly positive things to say- so I decided to give it a shot. I, like most, was worried about the 8 laps and if it would get boring...it did not. Being able to count down the laps instead of miles made the distance seem less daunting. After 1-2 laps, you learn every nuance of the course which really helps as you get into the later laps and begin to tire. You can prepare, both mentally and physically, for what's coming and that is invaluable. The overall organization of the race is second to none. Everything in regards to the logistics of the race was easy. Easy to get there, quick lines, no wait times, or extra walking. Takes a lot of any added pre-race stress away! The race directors and volunteers were so fantastic and some of the kindest I have ever encountered. Everyone truly cared about you meeting your goal and the energy it gave to the race was simply amazing. I would absolutely run this race again and would highly recommend it for anyone trying to run theirs! I got a PR and my BQ +2:20, which unfortunately was not quite enough for Boston this year, darn 2:28 cut off...but at no fault to the people at BQ.2. Thank you to everyone who made this race happen. You all rock!

My new favorite marathon!

I have run 27 marathons including 15 Boston's this one was perfect I qualified by 27 minutes! Well organized not flat by Florida standards but flat enough. Special thanks to the volunteer who asked and remembered my name x 8 loops. I found the course beautiful and you knew what was coming. Well done to all from package pickup to free massage. PS a lovely town to visit.

Flat course, great race.

Thanks to the volunteers and organizers of Last Chance BQ. It was a great experience and well organized. Like others have said, the 8 loops/laps were not a problem at all. I thought it was very beneficial to know what the last miles would be like. Towards the end of the race there were no surprises. For me mentally it was a good thing doing 8 laps. I counted down laps and not miles. I did PR but missed my ultimate goal. The setting was perfect, great course, great weather. The good thing is that I plan to return next year.

Exceeds expectations!

The Last Chance BQ.2 Chicagoland Marathon far exceeded my expectations. I loved the course, the organization of the race, especially the elite drink tables, the announcing every loop, great volunteers on the course and at water stops who cheered you on every time you ran by. I needed a 3:45 to BQ and ran a 3:31. I trained really hard for this one but the weather, course, support, and atmosphere definitely helped me far exceed my goal. Thank you so much. I highly recommend this race if you are looking to BQ or just want to run a small marathon that is just about perfectly executed.

Great race for BQ/PR

I have ran 40 marathons previous to this one and have never left a comment, but this race was different and deserves some recognition. I am also on the race committee for a local marathon and so I do know how much work and logistics go into putting a race on, and I was very impressed with the professionalism and how smooth every aspect of the race went. I want to personally thank the pacers, Eric and Jerry for being spot on and doing everything they could to help everyone in our group try to reach our goals. This is a PR course. I highly recommend this race to anyone trying to qualify for Boston.

great race to qualify for Boston

I was concerned 8 laps would get boring but it did just the opposite. Runners got to know the dips and cracks on the path so we were prepared for them. 8 was a much nicer number to get my head around than 26.2. Aid stations, course medics, volunteers, spectators being RIGHT along the path, post race food, shirts, medals, DJ sending music over the river to the other side of the path, all made for a magic morning.

Flat, fast course and perfect weather!

I really enjoyed the loop course (3.3 miles each) around the Fox river - it had a small number of runners (around 300) and was well organized. Preview course (1 loop) run on the previous day prepared me on the race day. Finally on my 6th marathon, I got a BQ with a PR by 11 mins. Thank you Last Chance BQ.2.

Excellent organization & support, felt like elite.

Truly an outstanding experience. It was the best Marathon experience I have had. I felt like an elite runner. Very well organized and could feel the interest from everyone on qualifying for Boston. Great support from volunteers, pacers, and organizers. Suggestions: 1) Aid stations be on both sides of the path to allow more room. 2) Elite tables, aid station, and drop zone need more separation between them to alleviate congestion. At minimum make drop zone on opposite side of aid station. 3) Increase distance between elite tables and drop zone to allow more time for intake of fluid. 4) Increase number of pace groups to decrease congestion within a group due to the size of the path. 5) Get use of course restricted to eliminate bicyclers and other runners.

A Great Race for the Purpose of BQ

This is a great race if your primary purpose is to go to Boston in 2016. Incidentally, this race may also qualify a runner for Boston 2017. It is relatively small and does not have the fanfare of mega marathon races, but it is well organized and very friendly. The course is an 8-loop trail. I liked the loops as I knew exactly what is next and counting the loops made the running seem easier. I also liked the counter-clock wise direction as I did not have to deal with the downhills at the wood bridge and the underpass. They became uphills, which are less hard than downhills, in my opinion. There is a little distraction as the course was not sealed off from bikers and other runners, but the pacers were pretty good in giving out alerts. All-in-all, a good race for the purpose, and it qualified me for Boston with some 15 minutes to spare.

If BQ is your goal, this is your race!

If your goal is to qualify for Boston, this race was designed for you. I ran it in 2015. I had already qualified for Boston in 2016, but was hoping to improve on my time to qualify for early registration. Success! I actually beat my BQ by 11 minutes, and improved on my PR by 7 minutes. Perfect weather (45-55 deg) and better training/diet helped, but so did a number of unique factors about this race: - Flat, shaded course. - Loop course design. Running 8 loops may sound less than ideal, but it actually helps you plan your splits. You always know exactly what is ahead. - Hassle free logistics. The whole experience was designed to be low stress for the runners, from 'elite' runner-specific aid stations to well-coordinated logistics. All I had to do was run fast. ;) - High energy atmosphere. The volunteers and coordinators were incredibly responsive, and the fact that all of the runners had a common goal made for a great experience. My only suggestion for future years is to add a few more portolets. It wasn't a crisis, but a little close down the stretch getting everyone through their final pre-race pit stops. I've run close to 50 full and half marathons, and this race was the overall best experience I have ever had. Kudos!

Great place to BQ

This race really delivered on its promise of a great place to BQ. It was small, so no crowded course to contend with. Parking and port-O-johns were convenient, so no pre-race worries there. Organization was excellent, there were plenty of enthusiastic volunteers at the Gatorade/water stops which were every 1.5 miles. There was an additional elite style table where volunteers would help organize your personal bottles. The course was a loop just over 3 miles that we ran 8 times, which was fine with me. Although some may tire of the same scenery 8 times, I thought it helped me pace myself since I knew exactly how much race was left. The course was flat and picturesque, all run along the Fox River. While there were not a lot of spectators, the ones that were there got to cheer for you 8 times and were enthusiastic. The weather even cooperated with an overcast morning that stayed in the 40's throughout the race.

Great race, laps not an issue

This was my 19th marathon and I have never written a review on this site but this race deserved it. If you are looking for a race to qualify for Boston this is the one. All facets of this race were top notch. I was a little concerned about run 8 laps but you end up following the mile markers more than counting the laps and forget about it. The best feeling is when you get to mile 20 you know exactly what you have in front of you, no surprises. I plan on doing the race again!

The Best Boston Qualifier. Period.

I have tried again and again to BQ for the last 11 years. I've tried big races, small races, out-and-back courses, point-to-point courses, flat courses, and courses with gently rolling hills, and come very close to BQ many times. In the end, the Last Chance BQ.2 is the one that got me under the BAA standard to toe the line in Hopkinton. This race's field is limited to a small size, which means you WON'T feel crowded on the course, and you WILL be treated like an elite athlete, complete with elite water bottle tables. At the same time, you don't need to worry about the race feeling too small, because the 8-loop course lends itself to solid pacing and enthusiastic fan and volunteer support. Finally, by hugging the shorelines of the Fox River, there is just the slightest variation in elevation as you run the scenic 3.2-mile loops. Although I happen to live locally, a quick scan of the results will confirm that it warranted a trip from out of state for numerous runners. Treat yourself to this run and go for a BQ (more than 60% succeeded!), a PR, or just a great marathon experience.

Thanks to the organizers, volunteers, timers, and all of those who helped make this a marvelous day! The course was beautiful, the cool temps invigorating, and the loop layout enabled us runners to appreciate the scenery, the smiles and encouragement from the volunteers and spectators, and to truly focus on reaching our own personal goals! I would highly recommend this race to those wanting to make the dream and focus of a path to Boston become a reality! Cheers and kudos for The Last Chance BQ.2 Chicago Marathon!!!

The Marathon with a friendly personality

This race was my first Marathon race competition in 19 years and my fifth overall Marathon. While I did not BQ with my performance (missed by 4 minutes or if I was 3 weeks older I would have qualified for 2016 with 6 minutes to spare) I did run my best marathon and best race of a lifetime by shaving 10 minutes off my prior best marathon time when I was 31 yrs old and now I'm 53. This race was well organized, and because it was small had a feel to it that you were visiting with a group of friendly next door neighbors that were volunteering to assist you in any way possible from the top to each individual and even though I did not know 1 person before the race there was an ambiance of we are all in this together and have the same goal to strive our best to qualify and/or run our best race possible. Although some like me did not qualify which was the goal, I can't say one negative remark about the race and there was an atmosphere of incredible support, positivity, fun and lots of smiles, and laughter. I was impressed it was a relaxed race atmosphere even though the runners shared tremendous focus and determination there was also a small town feel of friendliness and fun. Many thanks to the incredibly capable pacers, unselfish volunteers and Craig and race organizers for a job superbly well done. See you next year as I have some unfinished business to wrap up in Sep 2015 when I return to this marathon. Between now and the next BQ, I will focus on maintaining injury free health status, enhancing training and striving to get better as a work in progress to qualify for 2016. Many Thanks :-D

Great concept and flat, fast course

Overall this was a great well organized race. The start time of 6:30 am was perfect - at first daylight but insuring finishing before the day got too warm. Luckily the weather for 2014 was ideal - 43 to 48 degrees while I was running with minimal wind. The loop course was flat and scenic - very pastoral! The volunteers and race organization were phenomenal. 2 water stops per loop which meant 16 total water stops. The availability of Clif gels each lap was a bonus. The water bottle tables were well organized and worked perfectly. Course monitors were encouraging reminding you to stay relaxed, concentrate on your form and focus on the runners ahead of you. Pacers were nice and helpful to have. The pace groups being 4 minutes below your BQ provided a nice cushion and the ability to really catapult yourself to a nice BQ if you sped up for the second half of the course. My only complaint is that according to course map there were supposed to be a table with bananas on the course - didn't see a banana til the food table after the race. Also would be nice to have rice cakes post race and not just bagels for people who desire a gluten-free option with their peanut butter. Since I BQ'd by almost 10 minutes, PR'd by 40 seconds, & negative splitted by 4 minutes, of course, I was elated! I will definitely keep this marathon on my list and recommend to friends who want to BQ! Great concept and execution by the volunteers and race director! Kudos for providing a quality event.

Perfect race for the mission - to BQ

Awesome marathon perfect for the mission - a last chance to run a qualifying time for Boston! Great loop course that is mostly level. I really liked having the tables out that you could stash your bottles with special mixes and pick one up on each pass of course loop. Not huge spectator crowds, but they are their in key locations and very enthusiastic...even the staff and volunteers cheer you on! I didn't have my best running game that day, but it was good enough to post 7-min faster than age standard qualifying time and I loved being able to use their laptops and submit registration application post-finish!

It Rocked!!!!

It was all you said it would be...superb support for trying to qualify for Boston. You delivered on all the special things that were extra helpful to run a race and get your best time. The small size, names on bibs, the gels available all during the race, the elite water table, the hydration and the course loops. This gave runners every advantage. But the VOLUNTEERS were what made the race. They were with you every step of the way. Since you would see them every loop, it was like seeing a friend every loop that was pulling for you. The man who would catch your water bottle was AWESOME. Looked forward to chucking my bottle at him and his big smile....he sure kept me going!!!

Fast course well supported race

It is a 3.25 mile 8 loop course with slight negative elevation of 40 feet, basically very flat course. In addition to providing water/Gatorade and GU, it has elite drink where you can drink and drop off 100 yards later. In the loop, you can use GU every 3.25 miles, and alternate with your elite drink to provide optimum nutrition and hydration for the run. The race is well organized and supported.

Flat & Fast BQ Course that makes everyone an Elite

Signed up for this after faltering in the heat of Boston this past year. Was skeptical of a small town race but after an awesome summer of training, I PR'd with a 2:48. If you do not mind running loops, which I did not, this is perfect for you. There was a small 37 ft hill on each lap but other than that it was flat and fairly shady (it was mostly cloudy on raceday). Elite water bottles for everyone made it perfect and there were 2 other spots for water gels and gatorade as well. I loved the 6:30 start as that is when I do most of my long runs and it would have avoided heat if there had not been the cold front. Would recommend this race to anyone who wants a fast course to BQ. The race organizers acted like my friend and I knew them for years and were so proud we got our times, continuously thanking me for coming out.

Very well organized and structured.

I can't think of one negative comment to say about the Last Chance Boston Qualifer-Chicagoland. From the directors, to the volunteers, to the spectators, and to the city, it was an all around class act. Super friendly people willing to help you with anything you might need. It provided me with memories I will never forget. I recommend this marathon to anyone who wants to have an unbelievable experience. 5 out of 5 stars.

One of the best of 49 marathons I have run.

The organization of this last-chance marathon is second to none. Craig Bixler and crew did a fantastic job of having everything a runner could want. The water stops were wonderful with even the volunteers there cheering on each runner every time we passed them. The course is flat and fast!!! Tech shirts and really neat medals along with the chance to qualify for Boston really is the 'capper.' Wonderful pace group provided by Dick Pond. Can't say enough about this race. If you ever need a last chance to qualify for Boston, this is THE RACE.

Great race, optimized for qualifying for Boston.

Very well organized, volunteers were great, and pacers right on track. 8 x 3.25 mile laps made it easy for spectators. Almost perfectly flat. Beautiful area, so I didn't mind the 8 laps at all. By the 8th loop, I knew exactly what to expect.

Great Fall BQ Option!

I write this review with some hesitation (I don't want this race to be too popular). This marathon was scheduled on a day where one can qualify for Boston in both 2015 and 2016. Nearly everyone who registered was gunning to BQ (I qualified with nearly 3 minutes to spare, with my last BQ in 2004). Here's why I loved this race: 1. Small. Approximately 300 runners. 2. Flat beautiful loop course. Course never got boring despite the repeat loops. One noticeable uphill of 20 feet and a corresponding downhill. Eight loops of 3.4 miles. 3. Enthusiastic volunteers and fans supporting all runners. 4. Nice extras. You have a fluid table to leave your own water bottle. There are pacers for each qualifying group. Gels and food are provided at 2 aid stations that you hit a total of 16 times. 5. Comprehensive and easy to understand race instructions. 6. Weather and start time. At the start it was in the low 40s and we started at 6:30am. 7. Results. By my estimation half of the finishers BQed. There is some self-selection bias here but it is an indicator of the race's quality. Since these results count for both Boston 2015 and 2016, I won't need to run it next year, but I would definitely be interested in coming back and recommend it to anyone!

A neat concept and fun event

The Last Chance BQ.2 marathon is designed to maximize your chance of qualifying for Boston, and for the most part the inaugural version of this race did a very good job. The course is easy and flat, consisting of eight 3.25 mile loops. One of the best features was a row of water bottle tables, where you could leave your own bottles, drop them a bit later, and pick them up again each time around. It was well executed and allowed me to bring custom sports drink. The bottles were easy to grab and there was plenty of time to get a good drink in before the drop. Loved that! There also were several well stocked aid stations with supportive volunteers. The spectators were not abundant, but those that were there were very supportive. I only have one complaint. The pacers I had experience with left a lot to be desired. In the first group I ran with, the pacer arrived about 20 seconds before the gun went off, never said a word, and took off about 30 seconds too fast. That portion was downhill, so I figured it would level off and the pacer would settle in. The pacer did so for a bit and then sped up again, causing me give up on the idea of having a pacer and dropping back. A friend of mine in that group stuck with them for quite a awhile and reported that the pace was inconsistent and often stayed too fast-as much as 20+ seconds at times. After I dropped back, to my surprise, the next pace group quickly caught up with me while I was running a good 15 seconds faster than their pace. This group, which should have been rather large had only a few people and the pacer was consistently doing a pace 15-20 seconds faster than they were supposed to be doing. I came across a person later who originally was in that group and was upset about how the pacer was far to fast. In a race such as this, where the pacers are already going for 4 minutes under the qualifying time, accuracy is essential. I would suggest more careful selection of pacers in future years and also consider perhaps changing the goal to 3 minutes under, which is still plenty of time to guarantee Boston registration and would be a few seconds more forgiving if pacers go out too fast. I don't expect perfect pacing, which is quite difficult, especially given that GPS data can vary among devices as well, but the deviations I saw should not have been as large as they were. Otherwise, I loved this race and would happily do it again. I hope they hold it again next year.
