Fantastic race that exceeded my expectations

This marked marathon Lucky # 13 for me. I ran it thinking I would retire from marathons after this one, but I enjoyed it so much that I am already thinking about coming back again next year. Spectators were enthusiastic and more numerous than I expected; the race announcer was energetic and cheerful; everyone associated with the race was helpful & pleasant. The packet pick-up location has been moved, & we had no trouble parking and getting in/out quickly. Race organization was top-notch. I was thankful and relieved that I had no trouble accessing port-o-potties (which is always a major source of stress for me). The weather was perfect (upper 40s at the start; about 65 at the finish; sunny; dry). Half marathoners started near the turn-around point for the marathon, so we passed them as they were going out (and then caught up to them later). The presence of the other runners helped to keep the race energized and interesting. The course was so beautiful! I loved that it is an out-and-back race: I find it mentally easier to complete races like that, knowing exactly what to expect for the second half of the race. Also, the course was so pretty, I was glad to have a second chance to enjoy the views. I am so glad that I signed up for this race! The ice cream at the finish line is the cherry on top of the marathon sundae. The only (minor) complaint I have is that the award for age group winners was... an exact replica of the medal I got for finishing, only bigger and with the award category engraved on it. One medal, really, is one medal too many. Two? Overkill. I would have preferred a coffee mug or something useful. Finally, as one other person noted, the half marathoners were often oblivious and did not stay out of the way of faster runners coming up behind them. The course was closed, though, so there was enough room to pass them, but in those final miles of a marathon, trying to maneuver past walkers/shufflers can be challenging & a little annoying. Overall, however, this was a worthy destination marathon and a fantastic experience.

Couldn't ask for more from a destination run!

Race Summary: Excellent organization, pacing, water/Gu stations, fast course, beautiful scenery and town. Traverse City Track Club does an excellent job organizing. 2022 was the 40th year. This is a very large event, with nearly 8k registered for 10K, half, full (capped with 10k & half sold out early). There were periodic emails including info reminding about packet pickup times/location, changes to route for erosion, etc. Announcer was enthusiastic and informative. I don't know how she doesn't lose her voice. Packet Pickup: many of the negative comments relate to the challenging parking at high school. It was like 5pm-8/9pm Fri night (Sat early pickup avail.). We got there just before 5 (before even checking into our hotel from a long drive) knowing that it would be even busier soon and wanted to go to dinner and relax. There are 2 parking lots to the high school, we parked in a very congested, smaller, 1st lot. Recommend you pick the second drive for the large lot. Other than waiting for cars to leave, once inside the crowded gym, pickup for me took less than 2 min. There was a booth for free sunblock (which you should have), bandaids, chapstick, etc. I even got past shirts for a cash donation. Expo had Brooks shirts, hoodies, Gu/protein bars and such. It was very crowded. Note, it was card only - cash not accepted. Fri Night Dinner: I had researched several top-rated area pubs/restaurants. Instead of the pasta dinner I had earmarked, we decided to go to Slabtown Burgers and had burgers, chicago dogs, milk shakes, cheese fries, onion rings (I still hit my PR). The place has a big menu with unique burgers, cheap prices/tasty. Hotel: pricing is inflated for the wknd. You'll find that bookings go very early, and it's expensive to stay nearby. Family from Grand Rapids area stayed at the neighboring town, Kingsley, for much cheaper. And as spectators that's fine. We chose the Howard Johnson per another review here. It was $470 for 4 adults in 1 room for Fri/Sat nights. Warning that you think you paid in advance but only secure a spot, and they charge you day of. They moved breakfast from 7 to 5am Sat for racers (continental but did the trick). Hotel was perfect blend of 1.2 mi walk to race, cheaper, nice accommodations. Race: Scenery is beautiful. I even saw a deer wade out far into the lake early am. Down and back is not popular but it was fine for me. It is a very flat course. There are some small rolling hills and downhills but nothing noteworthy. 1st half features numerous areas of cresting down towards the water, a warning to feet problem runners like me fighting to stay on the road. Didn't see this in other reviews and it surprised me. Some good shade portions, some stretches of pure sun. I elected to not wear a hat and glob my balding head with sunblock, then bug spray. Lots of pacers beginning with 3 hrs, many of the larger groups like the 3:15 had 3 pacers. Sample I saw, pacers were very good. Water stations were perfect: long enough to see it ahead, quickly eat a Gu, and still catch a water. Organized by water, Gatorade, then water every time. Gu was available about 4x down and back, so I grabbed 4 total (used 5 including 1 in back pocket). The Gu is an underrated feature for me since I don't carry fanny/back packs (or anything including phone/ear buds). Cheering was good with spurts of spectators who were bused out to maybe 3 mile markers (but the down and back factors). There were additional residents, but many stretches away from the 1st (and last) mi that had very few spectators. However, this a large event, with plenty of racers to help keep you motivated and not lost through the early/late turns. Course is very well marked. This is the 1st time in any race I didn't get turned around. Finish: can't beat finishing on the track. The track surface combined with grandstand cheering is primed for emptying the tank! They video & photo the finish, so extra incentive if you want to pose. Food/Awards: Not good enough for awards, but they seemed generous with 1-3 age group prices, including masters men and women and the overall winners. Food included them giving boxes for you to fill with several energy drinks, pints of Moomer's ice cream, cookies, bars, chips, muffins! We planned ahead and parked our car in the lot Fri night, walked Sat am. So we could drop off these food boxes and return to cheering. We even got $20 GC's for downtown restaurants for being Track Club Members (I wasn't even one)! Lots to do in Traverse, and that's part of the draw. Went to Sleeping Bear Dunes (fun for marathon legs!), Cline Beach, Hippie Tree, world's largest cherry pie pan, putt putt twice. Also several wineries, original Grand Traverse Pie Co., Children's Museum. At 41, this was only my 2nd marathon (1st in Oct. 2021), but I improved from 3:43 to just under 3:17. Not sure how I overachieved a full min per, on even shorter training runs except that I pushed my self to stay with the 3:15 pacers until I cramped at 22 and stopped lame. I did loosen after a tough 4 miles of 8:15ish to finish with a 7:10 and a sprint on the track. It was overwhelmingly a great experience with only knocks being the road cresting, numerous giant geese poo that side stepped the whole way=, and having to weeve around 1500+ (yes, that's right) slower half marathoners because of the down and back. Many of them didn't obey rules and would walk 4 across like they were in Disney World. Race temp was perfect at 42 in am, 60s (but warm with sun) later. Wore shorts/t shirt w/ my PJ pants to take off=.

Beautiful course

I saved Bayshore as my 50th state and am glad I did. It is a beautiful course with lots of water stops. It was relatively easy for the people who came to get to one of the spectators spots. Negative: The parking at the high school is difficult as it's not designed for this many people, but they do have shuttles to try to alleviate the congestion.

A one-time race; terrible experience.

For Michigan, this race was unseasonably hot in 2018 - and the weather during the time of the scheduled race is highly unpredictable overall. For starters, packet pick-up is in the local high school gym which is not equipped with air. It's cramped, hot, swarming with people, not enough space, and not enough people. While it is nice to see runners in the half when doing the full, the farther out you get, the less spectators you see (which isn't a lot to begin with). Once you reach the turn around point, the sun hits your back and doesn't let up. In addition to the positioning of the course, there is almost no tree cover throughout most of the course. Nutrition and water stops on the course didn't respond well to this weather and were not nearly stocked with what runners in heat might need (salt) - they didn't have enough ice and water turned warm after a certain point. The course itself is an exact out and back and even though Lake Michigan is beautiful, the route eventually gets tedious because you run on the same boring road for approximately 25 miles. The finish is less than exciting, coming in near the starting point to the track of the local high school and never enters downtown Traverse City. I'm extremely disappointed that I paid money for this race. I will never run this full again, and would not recommend it to anyone who inquires about it.

Great Destination Marathon!

This was my first Bayshore Marathon and my first trip to Michigan, it didn't disappoint! Packet pickup was easy and well organized, communication was excellent. We stayed at the Howard Johnson which was within walking distance of the start and finish, it was clean, comfortable, and offered an early breakfast on race day. The course was absolutely beautiful with views of the water throughout most of the race, and the blooming cherry trees along the peninsula. There aren't tons of spectators but they are awesome. Several of the residents along the course set up their own aid stations (a couple included beer!) and many had music playing. The volunteers were very helpful and knowledgeable. Finishing on the track was really cool, and the ice cream and chocolate milk at the finish were delicious. I also love that they had women's sizing on the shirts. With the holiday weekend this is a great marathon to make a vacation out of, Traverse City is full of fun things to do and good places to eat. If you're a beer drinker try the Diabolical IPA at North Peak Brewing!

Six Bayshore Finishes, 1 PR, 3 BQs

This is a great race. I've run 25 different marathon courses, and this one and Boston are the only courses that I've run more than once. That is testimony enough as to the top notch organization and the course itself. Also, you can run tangents effectively if you don't stay with the herd, such that you finish at 26.2 instead of 26.3 or 26.4 like a lot of other races. It can be fast if it's not too warm or sunny (there's not much shade on the way back once the sun is up high). Unfortunately it has been warm the last 2 years. I still managed a BQ, but not by the amount that I was hoping for. I would suggest starting the Full Marathon at 6:30 instead of 7:15 to mitigate the heat. The medal was much improved this year.

Lilacs and Lakeshores

If you're looking for a low-maintenance, user-friendly serene marathon experience, this is your race! The 13-mile out and back provided views of the lake every step of the way, including the mist-laden morning views and boaters cheering as the day warmed up. The air smelled of lilacs and cherry blossoms. The people of Northern Michigan were insanely friendly, and I did not feel alone or remote for a second. Flat, fast course, the ability to watch some of the experienced and elite runners on their double back, and well-stocked aid stations with friendly volunteers. I loved this race. The only reason it got four stars was because they promised showers at the local YMCA and at 12:15, THEY WEREN'T OPEN! That's one of those things that, if it's promised, and then not there, and you're relying on showers... bummer.

Moderate-sized marathon with a small-size feel.

My wife and I traveled from Florida to run the marathon and explore the northwestern side of the "mitt" of Michigan. This is a well-organized event which features a beautiful out and back course mostly along the water on the Old Mission Peninsula. We were surprised to discover that this marathon has had over 2K finishers in past years. The packet pick-up was well managed and uneventful. The Expo was small having essentials and some clothing. Given there are three races (10K, Half, and Full), the Marathon is started first to minimize congestion on the two lane road that winds out of the Northwestern Michigan University Campus. The start and finish on the Traverse Central High School Track is really cool. There were aid stations at least every two miles offering Gatorade and water and with one offering GU. The course itself is relatively flat with only some small rolling hills and surprisingly a good number of spectators. Upon finishing there was plenty to eat and drink on the athletic fields adjacent to the track. The only negative I can think was the lack of any posted results in the finish area. This is a fast course which should be conducive to first timers, and those after a BQ or PR. We stayed in Traverse City for three nights and had a grand time. If you make it there, you have to drive to Sleeping Bear Dunes, the National Lakeshore there is fantastic.

Terrific marathon - lots of fun

This is a terrific race. The course is along the Grand Traverse Bay offering wonderful views of the area. The marathon was well-organized and not too crowded. The course is flat and fast. And the folks along the way were fantastic in their support of the runners.

A beautiful and memorable race

I have ran this race three times 2010-2011, 2013. This race has all the components of a great spring marathon. 1)Very well organized, (2 Fast and beautiful out and back course, (3 Typically great running weather. If you travel for this race make a weekend out of it and tour Traverse City. Its a beautiful area. This is a great race to PR/BQ or just enjoy and have fun. Be sure to get some Moomers ice cream after you finish!

Prettiest out and back you will ever do.

The morning was cool and beautiful with fog on the bay. By late morning the day warmed up to low-70's and the sun came out. Incredible scenery made this feel like a fast run. There were only a few gentle hills. The turnaround point was the largest and only lastest a 1/2 mile at most. It far exceeded my expectations for an out and back run. Good support from the spectators and genuinely nice runners made for an enjoyable experience. The race itself had an abundant amount of Gu stations and the post-race food was the best I have ever had (3 previous marathons). For my first time in Traverse City, I loved the place. Get hotels early, they book up!

Absolutely Beautiful and well organized, too!

This was my 6th marathon and I drove up from Chicago to check out Traverse City for the first time. Race aside, it's a great place to bring the family for a weekend getaway while you feed your running addiction :) I heard it was beautiful but I can't gush enough about the scenery. I was afraid I'd trip myself looking over my shoulder at the bay, just stunning! Very well organized and great crowd support, especially with the way the course is laid out. One of the Most Scenic Marathons

The Bayshore Marathon is quite possibly the only out and back course that I enjoyed running. It was a beautiful and scenic run. The expo was small and simple. It was easy and quick to pick up my racing packet. It was great for the marathon to able to provide spectator shuttle buses so that my son and wife were able to see me along the course. I would HIGHLY recommend that people would choose to run this marathon. Especially, if you are shooting for all 50 states like I am. Go to Moomer's Ice Cream afterwards. They have been voted Best Ice Cream in America and it's pretty darn good.

Love this race

This is my favorite race and I will run it every year as long as I am able to do so. Great aide on the course awesome volunteers and you cannot get a better course. My only complaint is I wish they would change up the medal and shirt other than changing the color

Great Small Marathon

All around well organized, well run marathon. There are obvious issues with the timing of half marathon walkers and faster marathon runners intersecting late in the race but except for some of the narrower portions of the course I didn't find it too big of a deal. I was pretty impressed that the TCTC is able to bus out 1/2 marathoners to the start and bus spectators along the course in a timely and well organized fashion. Course is scenic, fairly flat, and fast. Weather was warmer then anticipated but even though it was a 'hot' May morning for northern Michigan it was still cool along the water. Competition is fairly fast for a race of only around 2500 marathoners and there were a good amount of supporters along the out and back course. I look forward to being able to run this race again in a couple years

A Positive Running Experience!

A Positive Running Experience To begin with, by the time I got serious about registering for this race, registration was closed. I joined the wait-list. Within a day I was offered a spot to run, but had to complete registration by the subsequent midnight. This has been a popular race among people I have talked to who had run it earlier. Registration was at the high school, and the parking lot was very full, with lots of traffic. Still, once inside, the registration process was very smooth. There were three events, and it was a buzz of activity. But everything was well organized and there were an abundance of volunteers (something that was true throughout the marathon event). The check-in process continued to Saturday morning and another runner I spoke with said the Saturday process was streamlined and efficient. The race started and ended behind the high school complex, close to Northwest College. The start line was crowded, with some 2700 runners, but that was anticipated. Still, the people noise was so loud you could not hear the P.A. announcer. Half way through the National Anthem, the crowd finally quieted down. Then when start time approached, the noise had returned and we could not hear anything about the start of the race. After about 30 seconds or so, the people just started moving ahead, and we were off. The course exited the campus and connected to a residential area several different roads, but the roads all closed for the race followed the shore of the East Bay going north. The course was out and back. The volunteers were ever-present. The aid stations were well stocked with water and Gatorade fluids, and most had gel and a carb snack called chomps kind of like gummy bears or gum drops; one station had M&Ms too (that was my favorite!) Some of the residents offered their beer, and some played music; I told one guy it reminded me of being in high school again. Some of the neighbors were having as much fun as the runners were. Much of the course was shaded, but on the return trip, the sun was in our face I did sustain some sun-burn on my left side, face and shoulder. Still, some shade was available later in the course too, but near the end. It started out being sweatshirt weather, but quickly warmed up, probably to near 70 by mid-day. The finish line was very well done. Ice cream was available in multiple flavors; there were cookies, chips, and fruit too. Variations of Granola bars were also available. I met several first time marathoners on this course (or before the race). This was a popular race and I can see why. They brought a lot of people together in the community to host this event, and they took great effort to make this event a great marathon experience. A very memorable marathon event. Well done!

Will do again

This was my third marathon. It was a beautiful course, just enough spectator support, and had great on course aid stations. Flat and fast which I like since I train on a flat prairie path outside of Chicago. If felt like a Big Sur of the midwest with the views of the shore and blue water. Perfect weather and smaller field but enough to still have an exciting atmosphere. I ran the Chicago marathon the fall before Bayshore and it felt claustrophobic at times with the amount of people running and spectators. This was a nice, quiet race on a beautiful course with no need to weave in and out of people. Much more my style. Next year I will do packet pickup the morning of the race. Parking at the expo was a nightmare and it really was just a pick up of your packet and leave. No real gear to browse for. Traverse City is a beautiful little town with nice scenery,a cute downtown and winery's. Book your hotel early. We stayed at the Great Wolf lodge and they had a free shuttle for runners which was nice so the family could sleep in and meet me at the finish line without having to drag the kids out of bed. It was also nice to have a fun family place to go to as my kids liked having a fun trip at a waterpark hotel. Overall a fantastic race that I'll be running again this year.

Scenic and flat

Loved the course and amenities. What a beautiful way to spend a weekend morning. Course was almost completely flat with a couple tiny hills. Weather was perfect, and you finish with a huge bowl of Moomer's ice cream, voted by Good Morning America as the country's best. Would love to run with a pace group, but can't have everything. Although some people don't like out and back, I liked that you were passing other runners almost the whole way, and could look for people that you know. Traverse City is a fun place to spend the weekend. Race staff was extremely helpful to me and deserves special kudos. I will be coming back.

Great Race

I ran the full marathon in 2013. This was my 5th marathon and my favorite by far. PROS beautiful course along Lake Michigan small field of runners, never crowded great weather for 2013 ample water stations and great volunteers passing out water and gu brew flat, fast course- a few very small hills, but nothing noticeable great finish on high school track *** possible CONS crowded expo with not a lot of parking- I got there early and was in and out quickly, but as I left, the lines were forming not a lot of spectators- this didnt bother me, the course isnt easy to access, however the race does have transportation for specatators along the course which is nice

Great scenic marathon

This was the first time I ran the Bayshore Marathon, and I had a great time. It was a sunny day with cool temperatures, and the scenery along East Grand Traverse Bay was spectacular. The route itself was fairly flat with an occasional small hill, and I think it should be relatively easy to PR here. The Bayshore Marathon was a welcome change from big city marathons in that you're not stuck in large crowds that can impede your progress. The volunteers at the aid stations did there jobs well, and there were enough spectators along the out-and-back route to give me a morale boost every now and then. Traverse City and the surrounding area are a great place to relax, drink wine (there are a lot of wineries there), and enjoy the scenery. Pros: Scenic, flat, and well-run marathon. Very nice finisher medal. Beautiful vacation destination. Cons: Hotels are pricey. Book early after registering for the marathon.

Decent marathon

It bothered me greatly that there was no moment of silence for those who lost life and limb in Boston. The course is not flat, but that's okay. No swag except for a pair of socks. Lots of water, but the Gatorade was watered down, which was weird. Good crowd support. Finisher's medal is boring. Don't care for out and back races, but I knew that going in. Also no pace groups for those running slower than 10 minute miles.

Would do this one again

This was my 25th marathon and I really enjoyed it. Weather was in the high 30s to start. Finished in the mid-50s. Sunny, no wind, ideal conditions. The majority of the course is shaded so sun wasn't an issue. Course is scenic, run along the bay out and back. Logistics are good. 7:15am start time. Got to the start about an hour early and parked in a strip mall parking lot by the high school. Walked to start about 1/2 mile away. No pace groups which surprised me. This is a smaller marathon (about 2000 finishers) but not that tiny to not have pacers. No expo just a packet pickup at the high school, but who needs an expo. I dinged the organization one star as I wrote the race director 3 weeks prior asking for a deferrment to next year due to health issues during training. He said no citing a May 1 cutoff which I've never heard of before. But I'm glad he said no as I enjoyed it and BQ'd easily. I still dinged him though. Chocolate milk, ice cream, and tons of baked goods at after race. The course, weather and logistics are the best thing about this marathon. Would definitely recommend it.

Alway a great experience.

This was my first time running the full although I have run the half here twice. It was a great experience. The weather was perfect as it usually is and the course is very scenic. It is gently rolling along the bay shore (hence the name). You finish on the H.S. track which is always a plus. Only a couple of cheer zones because of logistics on the narrow peninsula, but lots of people at the aid stations and a number in their front yards. Lots of fun. Great relaxed atmosphere at the finish. Cholalate Milk and Ice Cream. Rumors of Beer, but I didn't think to look.

One of My Favorites

I enjoyed everything about this event. The weather was perfection and the course breathtaking. It was so nice to run on a road entirely closed to traffic. Volunteers were friendly and encouraging. Loved the royal blue tech shirts and finisher's medal depicting the path and bay. Traverse City has charm for days. There's no shortage of great dining options. The pasta feed the night before had a wonderful spirit. Desserts were all homemade by volunteers. Run this one!

Great race, terrible results.

I used to love this race, but their change to using gun times instead of chip times for a race this crowded is ridiculous. It's not a fair race if someone has a 3 second or 3 minute head start. The race director's response on the race website was to copy & paste some rules meant for elite athletes who start at the same time. I know several people who will not run this race again because of this.

Great mid size race on a flat course

This was a well done marathon. Packet pickup was well organized but there is no real expo, no real swag. The tech shirt is good but not outstanding and the finisher's medal is nice but not memorable. There are hotels located within 2 blocks of the start and finish which make things convenient. However, I would not recommend the Best Western Four Seasons, try the Cambria Suites instead. All the local hotels seem to raise the rates to unfortunate prices. I would like to see the race directors negotiate some hotel discounts. The course is out 13 miles and back 13 miles and pretty darn flat. If I remember correctly the high and low points are only separated by 20 feet. Somebody below posted something about hills. 20 feet does not a hill make. The first 2 miles the road is a little bit rough with some pot holes and broken pavement but not too bad. Previous comments about the camber of the road were not an issue. There are a couple spots where there is a bit of camber at the edges of the road but no one is stopping you from running in the middle of the road. One of the advantages of this course is no traffic. You have the whole two lanes to yourself. The water is visible for most of the course and there is a decent amount of shade on the course for those sunny event days. Half marathon runners start at the far end of the course and run towards you. They might be a factor for really fast runners but for the 4 hour marathoner, you will catch some of the half marathoners but they don't get in your way. The race is large enough that you are not alone and small enough that you don't feel too crowd weaving around slow people. The spectators are few but enthusiastic. Overall, this race is well done and I have no big complaints. In case you don't know, this is the cherry capital of the world. You can walk to the downtown area and visit some of the local shops selling trail mixes with local cherries that are downright delicious! They make great a great purchase to bring home with you.

BEST late-spring marathon out there!

This was a wonderful marathon experience from start to finish for me. As others have commented, packet pickup was crowded, but it was close enough to our hotel that we could walk to it without much hassle. The course itself was great, a simple out-and-back along the lake with breathtaking views of the bay. It's shaded along much of the route; I'd say maybe only 2-3 miles were in full sun, and it was well-supported with aid stations offering water, gatorade, Gu, candy, and soda (and some 'unofficial' ones offering beer and wine from a local vineyard). There are a couple of gently rolling hills on the course, but definitely nothing significant in the way of elevation change. It's really quite flat, and definitely a PR-type of course if you can handle the mental challenge of an out-and-back marathon route. As far as spectators go, there were quite a few clusters along the course, at least while I was running (finished under 3:30), and the local support was AWESOME! There were a few houses along the way that were passing out ice-cold towels to runners and some offering hoses to cool yourself off if needed. This year's shirt (2012) is a really nice design, and the medal is definitely my favorite (I like it even more than my Boston Marathon medal). The post-race refreshments were perfect for a warm early-summer dayice cream, watermelon, lemonade, and homemade baked goods (even some gluten-free cookies!), plus the usual post-race fare. Overall, this is a great race put on by a local track club. It very much has a 'local' feel to it, but in my opinion, that's one of the best things about it. I'm definitely planning to run this one again!

Great Scenery

In terms of scenery, this has been the most beautiful course I have run so far. The organization was good but I must agree with a previous runner in regards to the traffic and parking issues at the expo. The Bayshore Marathon merchandise at Runners Fit was not on sale and this was a disapointment because they had a lot of Bayshore Marathon apparel but at elevated prices. The spectators were sparse but loud. I was concerned during the first half of the race because it was getting hot and the sun was really shining, but, thank God it got overcast on the second half with perfect conditions. I did not find the course hilly at all and I am from Miami, Florida where you can hardly find a hill. Overall, this is a great marathon to run on Memorial Day weekend and I highly recommend it.

Awesome course....avg everything else.

First off, if your looking for a visually beautiful course go no further than Bayshore. The packet pick up was easy and effective, so no worries there. Race morning you need to be sure to use the restroom before you get there. The school has all (except a couple single stall) bathrooms closed. The porta potties have lines that are rediculous. All in all, you'll have that at races... The course has spectator view points but some people had a hard time getting out or were turned away. My wife was able to get out and about (via our car and a shuttle the race set up) and enjoyed watching. Spectators as a whole were limited to the 4 (or so) spectator points, so it got pretty quite out on the course at times. My biggest beef with the race was the mash up of half marathon runners and the marathon runners colliding. I finished in the top 15 and it was hell trying to get through all the half marathoners. It seemed they divided the two events in the last half mile, but the problem started about 4-5 miles back. I'm sure there were some frustration on both the half and full marathon runners alike.

Beautiful course, great weather, flat and fast

Can't get much more scenic than this. Course runs along shore of Lake Michigan. Nice, flat, fast course. Weather was 55-60 degrees and sunny. I wish they had a better organized pre-race bag and pickup program. Also, the packet pickup was a nightmare in the parking lot. We were stuck there for over an hour. But other than that it was well organized. Lots of water and GU support during the race, at practically every mile. I'd definitely do this one again.

Marathon Perfection

My first Bayshore and I'll be back. This gets it all right from the big things - great course, awesome logistics, nice size (good energy but not crowded) - to the details of the great swag (love the socks), dedicated organization and volunteers. Of course, helped this year with perfect weather but in any weather this is among that top tier of marathons that are worth travelling for.

Greatest Corps of Volunteers

Others can comment about the great course, fantastic weather, beautiful scenery, and friendly fans, but I want to say that I've never seen a more enthusiastic, supportive group of volunteers. From the check-in to the numerous water stations along the course to the people at the finish line, this race had plenty of volunteers who were absolutely fabulous. You guys showed Traverse City at its friendliest best and you should be really proud of what you have put together. My hat is off to you. Thanks so much for making the Bayshore Marathon an A+ experience.

Great Race, Great Location

Bayshore 2012 was my second marathon, and I will definitely be coming back. If you are from Michigan, you already know that nothing beats that 'up north' feeling on a holiday weekend. TC Track Club hosts a great race, and running up and down Old Mission peninsula was a thrill. Everything about the race seemed well thought out and well executed. Support on the course was enthusiatic. Packet pickup was efficient, but I was a little dissappointed that there was no Expo to speak of. I came prepared to spend money. The course was wonderful - great scenery and mostly flat. The out and back format really works, especially if you are running with a team as I was. It's really nice to be able to give out high fives to teammates before and after the turn-around. The only negative comment I have is that the half-marathon walkers in the race (and there are many) seem to generally be either unaware or unconcerned that walking 3 abreast across a narrow road was poor etiquette. Having to expend energy in miles 20-26 passing the groups of walkers carrying on a conversation in the middle of the road was a bit disconcerting to me. The race organizers were definitely aware of the problem, because it was always mentioned in the newsletters leading up to the race. Maybe get some marshalls out on the course moving the walkers to the side of the road? Other than that, great race! Well done TCTC!

Chip times disregarded

This is my favorite race of the year. I did the full in 2009, 2010 and 2011 and did the half this year. I will come back as long as I am healthy enough and can afford to. The course is awesome and I love Traverse City. I came here to register a complaint about the awards procedure. A friend of mine ran a chip time that placed him third in one of the older age groups and fourth by gun time. He was denied the third-place age group award. The race organizers said that it's USATF rules to issue age group awards by gun time. The USATF, in fact, says nothing about how to issue age group awards. The USATF does have rules for gun time to be used for overall winners and prize money, for qualifying for the Olympic Trials and for national records - except in masters age groups, when chip times are acceptable, as fast 60-year-olds are unlikely to line up in the front row. There was nothing listed on the race's web site that awards are based on gun time. Every other race I've done - including Boston - uses the chip for gun times. Race organizers quickly posted something on the web site saying that gun time is used for awards, as per USATF rules, then took some USATF rules out of context. They quoted this line: 'Chip/net times cannot be used for qualifying.' It was a policy about qualifying for the OLYMPIC TRIALS, not for winning age group awards. That policy actually adds that 'special consideration' may be given for chip times in some cases. They are covering their butts and not doing a good job of it. The person denied the age group award is very well-connected and was able to get volumes of evidence to the contrary from respected people in the industry. Bayshore's stance on chip times is that it's basically an 'FYI' for runners. I actually was able to use chip times for Bayshore to qualify for Boston - though my gun time would also have worked, I was seeded according to the chip. The BAA is fine with chip times. Bayshore actually has signs at the start for people to line up according to their pace. However, if competitive age groupers have to worry about gun vs. chip times, you could see 50-, 60- and 70-year-old competitive men and women crowding their way to the start line with the young speedsters, making a congested start an even worse disaster. None of this will ever affect me, as I'm not likely to ever place in my age group here. This is a very competitive race, which is awesome.

Fantastic SceneryFun Race

This course is all it is cracked up to be. The 2012 race gave us sun at the start and cloud cover on the run back and was nearly perfect. Others have written about the camber in the road. I didn't have trouble with it and it wasn't a big deal. I found the spectators (who were clustered at certain points) and residents (who were out plentifully, with tunes and cheering) to be a wonderful addition. The miles simply rolled by for me. The friendliness of the locals, the volunteers and fellow runners was terrific. I would advise you to register the day it opens...this race fills up very quickly, for good reason. If I had any suggestion for the organizers it would be to re-think packet pick up. It was a crush of people, gridlock of traffic to get to the high school the night before. The small city of Traverse City just isn't built for such a crunch. Finding a different site, nearer the mall, for example, would really improve that. I enjoyed my time at this race a lot. It's reputation is well deserved.

Great spring marathon

Ran my fifth marathon and first Bayshore. Organization was top notch, and everything from packet pickup to the race start was hassle free. The course was very pretty (being from the Chicagoland area, I was amazed at how fresh everything smelled!), but was hilly indeed. I read past reviews, but could have done more hill training. My legs ended up cramping up a lot in the second half, and I walked a ton. The crowd support was very good, where it existed. Do not go into this race thinking there will be a ton of spectators, and you will have a fun time. There were plenty of aide stations, with plenty of Gu if you needed it. The energy drink was kind of gross, though. I am used to Gatorade, but they had something else that tasted like soap (but I drank it anyway). There was Coke along the course...yum! There was also 'not water' for the brave of stomach. I had an overall positive experience and would recommend this race to anyone looking to run a spring race and get away for the Memorial Day weekend. Keep it up, TC!

What it lacks in crowds, it excels in location

It's hard to get a better race location than on a bay in northern Michigan. When the weather's nice (and it wasn't in 2011), it can be gorgeous. That said, this course is about 23 miles of rolling slanted pavement; I was well trained, but it took a toll on my calves. Support is solid at the official aid stations, and spectators sit out on their porches and watch us poor souls run past. Orange wedges were offered, as was 'not water.' Families throughout the course set out stereos and were jamming. That's authentic. Aside from the typical problems all marathons face (e.g. too few toliets, clusterfu$# at the starting line, and areas of sparse cheering), the only gripe I have with the race is the timing of the 1/2marathon walkers and their etiquette. Yes, I'm faster than most on the course, but somehow race organizers should schedule the 1/2 marathon walkers earlier or later as to not clog the course for everyone. Walkers tend to be social and walk 3-5 wide, and that causes congestion on the road. Combined with the glossy eyed fatigue one feels at miles 20-24, it becomes really annoying to have to weave or run around walkers. Those going much slower could be told to stay to the right of the road, and that would solve the problem. Would I run again? Maybe. The gear is great, and the hotels are all close.

Great Marathon Experience

This was my First Bayshore Marathon, third marathon of the year and 20th overall. I set a PR by 6 minutes and BQ'd by close to 10 Minutes. The course did have a few rolling hills in my opinion. Most times I ran the crown of the road to avoid the steep cross slope in some areas. I thought the spectator support was great. The volunteers at the aid station were top notch. I had one volunteer make an effort to run down the road to give me water after we missed each other at the aid station. Overall this was a great experience. The City made for a great long weekend with nice restaurants and shops for my wife and I to enjoy.

This race is great I and will do it every year if possible. Great course, great city. The only negitive i have is it would be nice to line up people by pace at the beginning to help keep people from tripping over one another.

Good low key event.

This was my sixth marathon and based upon previous comments I decided to use this as a great excuse to get out of town for the long weekend. The course is beautiful but I do think it should be noted that it is not as fast and flat as I assumed it would be. I read all of the comments here at mg.com and other race reports and had this idea in my head that this was a wicked fast course. It does have rollers and my legs were trashed by the end. If I had to do it all over I would have trained on my hills before this race. Denver might be at higher altitude but it is pretty flat unless you hit the suburbs or foothills to train. The spectators and volunteers were really friendly. The aid stations seemed to be a tad off on spacing but they were well stocked and easy to navigate through. Staying at the Cambria Suites is the way to go as the race packet pickup and start was a quick walk from the hotel. Traverse City is also gorgeous and the locals were very friendly for the entire span of our trip. I'd definitely recommend this race to others but just keep in mind that this course isn't pancake flat. Miles 7-19 were the worst for me. I did BQ and PR but it was very hard fought.

Good race overall, but a few caveats.

The previous reviews are overflowing with positive comments about the race, most of which are true. Having done it the last 3 or 4 years, I will just mention a few things that you should be aware of, especially fellow penguins (4.5 hr plus runners) who are considering this race. 1- Weather is totally hit or miss this time of year and in this area. I've run it in perfect marathon conditions, extreme heat, and cold and rainy (thanks to 2011). Be prepared for anything, right up until the time the race starts. (also, my g/f did not get her dropped stuff from 2010, so don't wear anything too expensive). 2- There seems to be a lot of debate about whether it has hills. That's a tricky question. Hills in the traditional sense? Not really, just a few small ones. However, the whole course seems to be on one giant hill and titled to one side, which will absolutely take it's toll over 26 miles and is nearly impossible to train for. Fight for every inch of flat pavement you can find, your lower half will thank you. 3- My biggest complaint- things start shutting down too early. WAY too early. This race bills itself as beginner friendly, but every year, even you finish at much after 4.5 hrs (vast majority of runners are between 4hr and 5hr), the tented area looks like a ghost town, and the some of the stations were deserted too. That's lame. 4- This year, for whatever reason, they decided to close the roads and shuttle people to the spectator areas, which I heard was a disaster. And the shuttles stopped at 10:30 and left people stranded. Are you kidding? And what percentage of racers are done in 3:30 hours? Maybe 10-20 percent. Come on. 5- The crowd support you get from the locals is great, and there are few areas along the course where it's decent, but it's really barren in a few areas. It's a smaller race, which is one of the reasons I like it. I'm not really complaining, just relaying that this might not be the best course to get pumped up by the crowd or have large amounts of family. 6- It's technically not a closed course. Very little car traffic in the morning, but again.. if you're a 4.5+ runner, beware...you will do some car dodging and may end up running on a shoulder with cars zooming by at 45mph. Overall, I still recommend this race. Great city, beautiful course, great volunteers...but 2011 seemed like a leap backwards in terms of organization in too many ways to list.

The BEST hassle-free scenic marathon in the US

The BEST marathon means different things to different people. I vote Bayshore as the BEST hassle free marathon in the country and one of the most scenic. Having run nearly 40 marathons competitively over 25 years (I won the 55-59 age group this year in 2:56) I think I know a thing or two about what makes a good marathon and enjoy sharing my thoughts afterwards with other serious runners deciding on a quality destination marathon. After all, when you train hard for two marathons a year you want your travel and race experience to be the most enjoyable it can be. Bayshore is a small community-run marathon with a BIG heart. Course is out and back, traffic-free and extremely scenic (one of the BEST) (not very hilly but not flat either), organization is wonderful, spectators are friendly and enthusiastic and the ease of getting to and from the packet pickup (in a HS gym) and start/finish (same place) is simple. No buses to take to the marathon start and no traffic to get stuck in (our hotel was 2 blocks from the start and finish with a sane 7am start). Ammenities and things to do and see before and after are plentiful. The area is beautiful. (Being from the desert, if I could afford a vacation home on the lake, this would be the place; its that pretty)...My only race criticism (and I wish race directors would address this issue) is the same for many marathons that have a companion half: While Bayshore has a commendable separate marathon start, you still crash into the throngs of pedestrian halfers (who start at the halfway out and back point) over the last 10 to 20K of the course. While I understand races need the half and the pedestrians to keep the numbers up and the event viable (and they certainly belong there), The truth is most of them don't understand running etiquette and make no attempt to get out of the way. I estimate I added 5 to 10 seconds per mile weaving in and out of the halfers over the last 10K. I had to come to a complete stop while in full sprint mode upon entering the track finish not to run into 3-4 halfers abreast. My advice is simple: 1) cone off a lane the last 10K for the marathoners to have clear unimpeded passage; 2) have a separate finish lane/chute for the marathoners (Bayshore could have the marathoners finish on one side of the track, the halfers on the other). Easy fix that many marathons could implement. Other than that, if you're looking for a relatively small, friendly, hassle-free scenic spring destination marathon, Bayshore is the BEST one I've found so far.

Beautiful course...would do it again.

Overall this was a great event. The course is spectacular, flat, and cool as you run along East Grand Traverse Bay nearly the entire way. This was my first marathon and the only negative I have about this race is that the Pre-race communication is terrible and not at all motivating. I thought some of the comments in their email newsletter were even rude and they seemed unwilling to accommodate runners requests. While this was my first full marathon, I've done several half marathons and love races that inspire and motivate the runners before the event. In my opinion it's part of the entire experience that makes running marathons so special. With that said however, I have very little to say that's negative about the course. It was well marked and it is great to see the half marathoners and the fast full marathoners coming back in. I would do it again for sure.

Money not going to the race.

This marathon has gotten great reviews. I think the course and medal socks and shirt are what we pay for. Otherwise everything else is pretty bad. First off the expo was small. And all i got in my bag were 3 pins instead of 4. Then i just get a shirt and socks. The parking is a nightmare getting in and out for the race morning and after. There should be people directing cars to spots. And filling the parking lot out that way. There should be a police officer after the race letting traffic out because it was horrible sitting in a car after a marathon for that long. Next the race itself. Not enough bathrooms. I mean 5-10min wait for bathrooms is understandable. But 20mins, that's outrageous. And the worst of it all, the marathon starts without any call of 1min or 2mins left. It was 5mins until race time and a call was made but the bathroom line was so long, and then the gun goes off. Finishing up theres just too many half marathon walkers walking 5 or 6 abreast that makes it really hard weave in and out of traffic after much of the race is traffic free. Also getting done you expect good food, but really just salty baked goods, bananas, oranges and ice cream when its freezing out. I could only have a couple bites before i was too cold. I know it wouldve been great if weather cooperated, but maybe they could've sprang up some hot chocolate really quick since it was at the school. The course is somewhat flat, but pancake flat is far from it. The cambered roads kill the knees.

First time marathon

This was my first marathon and it could not have been a better experience as far as the organization, the residents, and even the support of other runners. Aside from being under trained, I was able to finish. I didn't have to crawl across the line either. I actually sprinted. Thank you to all that make this marathon possible. You are all doing a great job.

Great small race

This is a really great, small race on a beautiful out-and-back course. While the course in not pancake flat the small rollers pose no real problems (and I am from Chicago). It is a rural course, so if you are accustomed to constant crowd noise, you may notice the silence. This is a very nice, little town so stick around for a day if you have the time to spare. I stayed at the Cambria, which is a very nice, new hotel a whopping 3-minute walk from the start.

The BEST small marathon, hands down!

Out-and-back course along the shore of Lake Michigan for all but a few miles. Gorgeous views, and a flat, excellent course. This race is put on basically by the track/running club with a big sponsor being the bank. The people are super friendly and accommodating. Pasta dinner was fun and easy to get to with very nice volunteers. The medals are big, beautiful, and abundant in that they awarded through 5th place in 5-year age groups. At the finish they had ICE CREAM and it was delicious. All in all, it was everything I had expected and more. The only possible downside is that there are not crowds of cheering people along the course. I didn't go there for that, so it was just a wonderful experience all the way.

What Grandma's purports to be.

Having run close to 30 marathons, this race is definitely in the top three. If you want a race where you can run fast, enjoy the scenery, and not break the bank, then this is it. If you need a large crowd, with a mega expo, and expensive hotels/restaurants, then go elsewhere. Read what Grandma's says about itself (which is an exaggeration) and you would think they are talking about Bayshore. Expo is small, but so is the race. They had everything I needed with very little hassle. The pasta dinner in the school cafeteria was OK, but it had the best homemade desserts I have ever eaten, and for the price it cannot be beat. The course truly has lake views and a few rolling hills, but just enough to stretch the legs. A PR is very possible. After-race food and drink were far above the standard. (I ran NYC in November and was handed a dry bagel and soft apple.) There's a lot of family entertainment in the area so bring them along as they will not be bored. Fifty-Staters and Maniacs, put this race on your list and you will not be disappointed. Race officials keep, the size limited and the hotels in check with the pricing, and you will be around for a long time. I will be coming back to do the half to take a crack at my personal record.

Excellent course and location

This was my 25th marathon and the 4th time that I have run Bayshore. I will be back. My wife and I have a great time, the course is beautiful, the race is well run and the size is right. Please do not change the course, nor increase the entrants, as both would take away from this marvelous marathon.

Beautiful course; small, hassle-free race.

This was my second Bayshore and I plan on doing it again! What's not to like? The course is beautiful; you run along Lake Michigan for most of it. We stayed at a hotel downtown and walked to the race 30 minutes before the start. Very stress-free. Did a PR and BQ, but had a heat-related issue at the finish line. The medical staff were right there and did a great job of taking care of everyone. There was Stone Cold ice cream at the finish. Got to love that.

Wonderful race for fast runners.

I agree with all of the positive comments. So, I will leave my negative comments to give a bit more information. 1.) The race is for FAST runners. I finished in 6 hours and 14 seconds (the cut-off time is 6 hours). All of the finisher food was gone, and almost all of the people. Everyone was very nice and all of the aid stations were still open, but I felt very alone out on the course. If you are a slow runner, I would suggest a different race (perhaps Grand Rapids). 2.) The course had more hills than I expected, and the turns on the road were banked, making it hard on the knees. I wouldn't recommend this race to anyone with bad knees. 3.) The women's t-shirt only comes down to my belly button. I would prefer a longer shirt. 4.) Overall, a GREAT RACE!!! The volunteers were great, the spectators (the few there were) were awesome. The medals are AMAZING! This is the perfect race for a fast runner with good knees who enjoys short t-shirts.

Spectacular

The course was fantastic. The post-race survey asks if the out-and-back is good or if the organizers should explore a loop course. KEEP IT AS IT IS! The multitude of water stops, the excitement of seeing the elites, the scenery so wonderful you enjoy it both times... all great. The medal was one of the nicest I've earned and the shirt isn't that bad. I like the fact that it is relatively void of advertising too. The reason the course and organization do not get a "5" is because cars were allowed on the closed portions of the course every so often. Having runners on each shoulder while a car is driving down the middle was discomforting. Also, the packet pick up site (local high school gym) was great once you got in, but the traffic in that school parking lot was mayhem.

Well worth the training!

This is a great, scenic race course. I ran with Team in Training. It was really cool to see and encourage my other team members on the out-and-back course. The start and the finish are congested. It seems like the finish line volunteers were too close when finishing. I like how other marathons have wet towels or sponges at the finish and room to walk a little before the medals are handed out. I love the fact that spectators can easily move along the course to support the runners.

Is it over already?

This is a great course that almost makes you wish you could keep going. Easy access to start and finish areas keep the feeling more relaxed than a big-city race. The course, date, and runner limit should be maintained as they are. This small town supports the race very well. I'll be back!

A wonderful race!

Very well-organized, with good after-run foods. Fans were very supportive. Course was relatively flat. Unlike others, I like the technical T-shirt. It is not covered with logos on the back. The 10K race seemed like an afterthought. My wife was a little displeased: no medal, only cotton T-shirt, and the food was sparse.

Fantastic Event

It was a great race and a great weekend. The organization of the race was flawless. Food was great. I didn't mind the shirt. The course was amazing. I took my family to drive it after the race so they could see it, it was so beautiful. Their weren't a ton of spectators, but that would be expected due to the location. Love the course... by far the best flat course

I love this marathon; it's one of the best by far. This is my 2nd year, and I've done half marathons elsewhere. Bayshore is the best! I have to say: The T-shirt design needs much improvement, please. It looks like a bird pooped on my T-shirt. We pay for the fee of our run... I hope you can come up with a nice design for next year!

Scenic, well-organized, smaller marathon

I love this race. Each year seems better than the last. The course follows the gorgeous Grand Traverse Bay. It is composed mostly of gently rolling hills. Definitely not flat, but nothing to be afraid of either. The roads are quite crowned, though, so be prepared for that. The course is partially closed, with very limited traffic on the open sections. The volunteers are plentiful, friendly and helpful. There aren't large quantities of spectators, but those who do come out are encouraging and helpful (turning on sprinklers, etc.). The finish is at Northwestern Michigan College - on the track. Very nice and convenient for meeting up with family and friends. This year, the temps were a bit warm... into the 80s. But that was unusually hot. The organization is wonderful. Plenty of info on logistics. Fantastic medal. Technical t's are ok (the women's run so short and small!). Website is unattractive but helpful. My only suggestion? Gatorade closer to finish. After such a hot day, it was excruciating to walk across the field to get to food/beverages. Once I got there, though... wow. Coldstone, pretzels, bananas, cookies... everything you could want. This is a "must do" marathon in a beautiful, lovely resort town that is friendly and very affordable. This has become a Memorial Day tradition for us.

What a beautiful run and morning. It really does not get better than this. The volunteers were great, the people who came out were great and the view was the best. I will come back in the future. Definitely a PR course! The only minor complaint would be the T-shirt.

Flat, fast, good weather, good food, great crowd !

This is a great marathon. What I like: Scenic course - out-and-back, and flat, and fast. The half marathon starts from the midpoint and provides fun on the way out. Good crowds. Great food and plenty of it at the end - ice cream, fruit, bread and cheese. Lots of community - 10K, half and full. Nice environmental emphasis. What to improve: Expo - why did they quiz me about my address, age, etc. before giving me my bib? It just slowed the process and there was an unnecessary line. Tents - add more tents at the finish (shade if it is sunny, and cover for the rain...).

Best small race, very well organized, great views

This is the perfect, small-size marathon, with a maximum of 2,000 runners. Very well organized. The course of the marathon is mostly on a tree-lined road with a wonderful view of the lake. The climate is also perfect - probably 55 with a nice breeze at times. The crowds are cheering enough, but not loud as in marathons in big cities. The food after the marathon is the best in the world. The yummiest cookies I have eaten! They also had Cold Stone ice cream, fruit, beer, yummy bread, cheeses. By far the best food I have had after finishing a marathon.

Perfect First-Time Experience...

This was my first time running a marathon, and I was very impressed. Although I cannot compare it to other marathons, I completely agree with all the other posts as far as the outstanding overall quality. The course was a beautiful - slightly rolling, overlooking the water. The volunteers were exceptional. I never had any problems getting fluids or knowing where I was in the course due to their amazing work. The finish on the track is a great way to end. I have done a great number of shorter distance racing, and I can with confidence say they had the best finishing stations... (ice cream!? absolutely amazing!). From sign-up to leaving the Traverse City area, this race was easy and fun. I will definitely race it again in the future.

Great race, beautiful course

Beautiful course! Loved the race and the community support. Flat and fast course - I BQ'd. Nice tech shirt; I'm not so crazy about the pinkish color, but it's a nice fit and fabric. Loved the socks! The expo was extremely small. Would definitely do it again.

Beautiful, fast marathon

This was the third marathon course I've run, and was by far the most scenic. The race is a great size, with enough runners so that you are never alone on the course (but still lots of room to run). The course is fast; I PR'd by almost six minutes. The water stops are well placed and well supported. I would recommend this race to anyone. The course is very scenic, as is the entire Traverse City area. Make this a long weekend and enjoy the area.

Perfect race, some rude spectators

This is the most scenic race I've ever run. The race was perfectly organized, the weather was as good as it goes, and I loved my green T-shirt. However, 200 feet from the finished I nearly tripped and fell, because there were unsupervised toddlers in the finishers' way. Immediately after that, I had to pass a runner who was finishing with her little children accompanying her, and they blocked almost all the way. Dear spectators! The last thing a marathon finisher wants is to collide with an unsupervised child and fall. Please be respectful of us runners - many of us are very tired when we are finishing.

GREAT Marathon Course & Post-Race Grub!

The course is very beautiful, with plentiful water stations (GREAT support by the GU volunteers as well), picturesque views, AWESOME medal (as nice as I've received in my 19 marathons), and FREE Cold Stone ice cream, yogurt, cookies and bananas/oranges!

Incredible Race in Beautiful Northern Michigan

This was my first marathon and I picked a great one! It was an amazing experience from start to finish. And I don't only mean the race. The Traverse City area is a great place to vacation, especially for the outdoorsman or wine enthusiast! As for the race experience< there really wasn't much of an expo. But I knew about this before I chose the race. The local running store sets up a little bit of merchandise and there are a few pamphlets to pick up about other events - that's it. I'll also add my only other negative - the color choice for the shirts was horrid! Women's shirts were pink (eeew!!) and men's were bright green. The shirt itself was a nice, Brooks Podium, short-sleeve, but it is so incredibly ugly. I was warned that packet pick-up lines would be long. They weren't! It went very fast! I got my bib, my shirt and free socks (Yes! Free socks!) very quickly. My husband and I had no trouble finding parking race morning and we got there about a half-hour before the race start. After the gun, I had very little trouble negotiating the crowd before finding room to run. The size of the race is just right. There were plenty of aid stations and the stations were very big and spread out, with plenty of volunteers who did a great job shouting out "water!" or "Gatorade!" Kudos to those volunteers! The race course was beautiful - better than I had hoped for. The sunrise over the lake on the way up the peninsula was amazing. The finish on the track with stands filled with spectators was uplifting. The post-race refreshments were awesome! Lots of bananas, oranges, cookies of all kinds, YOGURT (!!), and Coldstone Creamery ice cream! Even though I became personally acquainted with the dreaded Wall during this race, I still consider it an amazing experience. Do this race!

Great Race!

This was an excellent race. Great course, great conditions, great shirt, nice people - just an all-around great race. FYI: this race is not as flat as the Chicago Marathon. It is in no way hilly, but I was glad to know ahead of time that it did have gentle, rolling hills throughout. Maybe "soft inclines" is better way to describe them. Despite this, I PRed (and I have run flat Chicago twice)! This was my 14 marathon, and first Bayshore. I would do it again, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a race at which to PR or qualify!

a beautiful and well-run race

I would highly recommend the Bayshore Marathon for anyone who needs to run a Michigan marathon for the 50 state club, or else for anyone who wants to run a relatively small, well-organized race on a beautiful course. The only negatives (and they are no big deal) were that the expo was small, and that by the time I finished the marathon they had run out of ice cream (oh the humanity!). All in all, a great race.

Expo was a bit chaotic, due to the size and number of people. Nice shirt and finisher medals. Course was beautiful and temperature was perfect. The conditions and course allowed me to beat my PR by 6 minutes. Will be back next year.

Perfect Race

Not enough good can be said about the 2009 Bayshore Marathon. It was the best-run race that I have ever been a part of. I have run marathon majors and small-town races, but this was better than all of them. I will return. From beginning to end, my wife and I had a great experience. The highlights are: 1. Fast, PR course (4 minutes for me; 16 for my wife) 2. Great Brooks tech-shirt 3. Easy registration process 4. Well stocked and prepared water stations 5. Finish on the track was memorable 6. Great finisher medal 7. Age-group awards are available when you are ready to get them. No ceremony. (I have waited 45 minutes at other marathons to find out that I won a coffee mug.) 8. Free socks at the expo (good ones too) 9. Free pictures at the local Running Fit after the race (very classy) 10. Fast and easy expo 11. Good spectator support 12. Beautiful course

Fantastic marathon - I highly recommend it!

This was my 4th marathon, with my prior 3 all being Chicago. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I absolutely loved it. The course was beautiful, the race was well-organized, and the course was flat. There were lots of water and Gatorade stops, GU stations, etc. The organizers were all very friendly and helpful. Good t-shirts too. There aren't a lot of spectators, which is due to the race size and course layout, but I thought it was great anyway. It was a peaceful course and the spectators who were out there were awesome.

A Grand Hotel Experience

The expo is small, and not worth going to. With that being said, that is probably the worst thing about the entire marathon experience. You can see the Grand Hotel and a lot of multimillion-dollar homes along the course. The roads only had a few potholes to watch out for - very few compared to many Michigan roads. The fan support was limited and spread throughout the course. The aid stations were adequate. The finish was at the high school track. This was a good idea, as there were bleachers for spectators to watch and cheer you on as you finished. The refreshments were above average: They had cookies and ice cream, just to name a couple. In addition, the finisher medal was big, heavy and well crafted. Finally, the support staff were very friendly and helpful. I would like to see a marathon course that runs the entire peninsula in the future, if at all possible, but other than that, I really wouldn't change anything.

Fantastic race with great scenery and organization

This was my first time at this race, but not my first marathon. I thought the organization and friendliness were outstanding. Yes, the expo is small, but it is well organized and I was in and out within a few minutes. The whole course is basically flat, with great scenery and plenty of aid stations. I will definitely do this one again. There are not many long straightaways, so you won't get bored looking too far ahead. Highly recommend it!!

Good, flat course with hometown support

This was my first marathon. I picked up my packet the morning of the race and was a little disappointed to have trouble finding a drinking fountain to fill my bottles. I was given a bottle of water after looking for a fountain. If you want a decent parking spot, get there early. I arrived around 6 a.m., and the congestion was already really bad. The race started at 7 a.m. The race amenities were plentiful along the course. I was given all of the GU I could want. There were spectators along the entire course; residents hung out in their yards and some gave out water. Officially, I don't think iPods are allowed, but the recreational runners did not have an issue plugging in if they wanted to. My time was pretty terrible but not because of the race; I just underestimated the demands of a full marathon.

Well-run, small-town race!

This was my first year running Bayshore and it was my 8th marathon. I thought it was the perfect-sized race - it wasn't too crowded, but I was never alone. Crowd support isn't like a big race, but the sections that had spectators were great! It was a nice scenic course which I enjoyed. It wasn't "pancake flat" though, like others told me. Don't get me wrong - it's not hilly, but it's not flat either. I would probably say this race is "relatively flat." The roads were really slanted - more so than I was expecting and probably one of the worst I've run on. I tried to run in the middle, or on the shoulder - whichever was the most even, but I still had issues with my right IT band around mile 18. I never had this problem in training and was taken off guard. I liked the finish on the track and having Cold Stone ice cream at the end was awesome - they gave me plenty of it and it made a really nice treat. The only thing they were missing from the finish line that I would highly recommend was Mylar/foil wraps. I was freezing when I stopped running and was shivering - a foil wrap would have been nice to have. I liked the race t-shirt - it's very simple and reflects the atmosphere of the race. It was a short-sleeved, black, Brooks technical tee with the Bayshore logo on it. My only complaint is the expo - I wish they would find a larger location for it other than the high school. Since the expo was only held in the evening for a few hours, it was very congested and the lines were long. It seemed to be a little disorganized in the way it was set up. It seems like they could find a larger location and offer longer expo hours. And having outside vendors there would be nice as well. The finisher's medal was top-notch! Not only was it large, but the ribbon attached to them were very nice and decorative. For the price, you can't find a better race than this one. I highly recommend it!

You HAVE to do this racce!

This was a great marathon, seriously! I have done Chicago the last 3 years and was extremely disappointed after 2007. We decided to do a smaller venue and drove up to Michigan for this one, as it got great reviews from '07. The course is awesome - breathtaking views, indeed! I didn't PR, but came within a minute or so. Very well organized and just plain beautiful. The fans were thin, but very enthusiastic. The water stations were plentiful and had great staff! I will do this race again. We went to the wineries afterward and just had a great time. Kudos to the organizers and the volunteers!!!

I'm counting the days until I can register again..

I love this race! It's my all-time favorite. While I like to do different races each year, Bayshore is the one constant for me. The half is the perfect size and could even grow a bit. I love seeing the marathoners run by, the view of the bay and the pretty homes, the ease of packet pick up and race-day parking, and the track finish. I especially loved this year's finishers medal/ribbon. Traverse City is a fabulous vacation destination and the race occurs before the summer crowds arrive. There are enough walkers, so I never felt alone, but not so many that the course was crowded or that we were in the way of the faster marathoners doing the second half of their race.

Bayshore Marathon... as good as it gets!

This was my first Bayshore Marathon. What a wonderful experience I had, and I was able to qualify for Boston! Course was GREAT! What views along the Traverse Bay. A few rollers mixed in, but overall pretty flat and fast. Organization was outstanding. Packet pick up was crowded, but moved right along; not much of a traditional expo to check out though. Plenty of parking at the start, which is great. Aid stations are positioned very well and the "aid station ahead" signs were helpful. Coming to the finish around the high school track was exciting. It seemed like everyone was cheering for your finish. The medals at the end were more than I expected, as was the post-race food. Wonderful job to everyone involved in this race. Keep things as they are - and the cap on the number of runners helps this stay an amazing race. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

Simply a Great Racing Experience

Wonderful out-and-back course (for the full); interesting that you pass the half marathoners who start simultaneously at our halfway point. That actually cuts down on start traffic nicely. Speaking of the start, I was really surprised that there were no corrals for some 1,300 runners, but it worked out nicely anyway. The finisher's medal is one of the best I've earned. And I have to disagree with those who complain about the t-shirt. It's a Brooks technical that you can actually use - I'll take that any day over the typical cotton shirt. Fan support was phenomenal, as were the volunteers. Every water stop was expertly managed. My favorite fan sign: at about mile 20 or so said, "Suck it Up, Buttercup!" Finally, the Traverse City area is wonderful. This race makes for a great long weekend.

Will do this course again.

This is a very scenic course where PR's and BQ's are possible. My son and I drove 13 hours to run - the course alone made the drive worth it. My PROS for this race: the course; Traverse City - great town to visit; finish around the track; massage tent; great medal; plenty of GU and water stops. My CONS: packet pick up -needs a new location and longer hours; better post party; better designed shirt. The volunteers were great. A must-do small race.

Perfect Course - Perfect Weather

Bayshore Marathon is #39 in my ongoing quest for 50 states plus DC. Based on research and word of mouth, we never considered any other Michigan marathon - and we were so glad we didn't!!!! We stay away from the city races - opting for fresh air and scenery - and I've never been on a more beautiful course! An easy roll to the road kept my legs from a beating that allowed me and my family to hike the Sleeping Bear Dunes that same afternoon and bicycle Mackinac Island on Sunday. An absolutely wonderful marathon, town, and total vacation package. We stayed at the Grand Beach Resort and even met your local Harriers! Keep up the great work ! I'll enthusiastically recommend this race to all who want a total marathon experience.

Fun race - very scenic. The out-and-back course was great. Going out, you get to see the half-marathoners coming towards you; then you see the lead marathoners, and after you make the turn, you get to see the rest of the other full marathoners. When you're not seeing other runners, the views of the bay will keep your mind off of the effort you are making.

Excellent Small Race

This might be one of the best-kept secrets for those of us who live in Michigan. Although the course is an out-and-back, it has to rank as one of my favorites because of the incredible view you have at all times during the race. As some have said in the past, this is not a flat course, but it is not overly difficult either. It kind of just maintained a nice gentle roll with only two hills to speak of. I also agree with a previous post that the second half seemed to be easier than the first, with more of a downhill feel. There were not a ton of spectators, but the ones that were out were great. Aid stations were small, but more than sufficient for a race this size and seemed to be spaced appropriately. I would highly recommend this race to anyone who wants to run a nice, well-organized, low-key marathon. Ps. It did not hurt that the weather was absolutely ideal and could not have been better.

A Great Location, Course and Day..

I had a very good time running the marathon last weekend and wish to thank everyone involved. While I still have some training issues to address, I now understand why so many people want to ensure that they run this race every year. The local hotels are within walking distance of the start/finish, the street did not seemed packed from the start, and you could run tangents easily, which I found out later is how the course was measured. I love the 7:00 a.m. start, the road winds enough so you don't look out for miles like a city course, the finishing medal was very nice (heavy), and I loved the hand scooped ice cream at the finish. The marathon shirt was solid black and very plain (needs to improve) and they did not have XL shirts at all and are mailing them to us. I enjoyed looking for friends running the half marathon, as they started from the 13.1 point and ran to the finish line. This gives you have a chance to say, "HI" and high five your friends running that race around the 6-mile point. One thing that might help is to hold back the start of the 10K race so the leaders of that race don't have to holler to make way as they run through the "back of the pack" marathon runners until their turnaround point. Weather: 40 degrees, no wind and a blue sky made it a GREAT DAY, but I think you would enjoy this run without such wonderful conditions. Special thanks to the guy at mile 21 passing out the emergency beers to us back-of-the-packers. LOL.

Bayshore is a good choice for first marathon

This was my first marathon, and I am really happy I chose this one rather than a larger race. It was extremely well-supported and everything was easy to figure out for a first-timer. Spectators along the course were enthusiastic and the views were truly spectacular. Detailed results were posted the same day on the web. Post-race food was great, as were the finisher medal and shirt. Run the Bayshore... you'll be happy you did.

Don't Miss This Race

You must try this race at least once. Parking and packet pick-up could not have been easier. Finisher's medal was the best I have seen so far (even better than Disney). Shirt design was simple, but it's one that you could wear over and over. Spectators along the way were very supportive and volunteers were enthusiastic. There really isn't anything to complain about. The only reason that I rated the course a "3" is because I'm not really a fan of out-and-back courses, no matter the distance. If that doesn't bother you, then you will most likely enjoy the waterfront view and gently rolling hills. I had such a good experience that I can't understand why only 1,262 of the 1,700 registered participants for the marathon showed up/finished. I understand that schedules change or some may not have been able to finish the race, but a 25% no-show rate seems a little high. If this is typical, then the cap could be raised to allow more runners to register for this great race.

not actually flat

My first marathon but not my last. This is a well organized race on a beautiful course. I was very pleased with everything - with two minor exceptions. The aid stations were plentiful and the volunteers were awesome. The only problems I encountered were: The course is not flat, as they claim. It isn't extremely hilly, but I was almost always running either up or down a hill. Towards the end of the marathon I had to go around several groups of walkers. The walkers have a tendency to walk side by side and just close enough together that you can't run between them. I was very close to running a fast enough time to qualify for the Boston Marathon and having to go around these walkers the last few miles when I'm exhausted is a pain. All in all, it was a good experience and I'd like to run it again. Someone should apologize for having those walkers in the way though.

2008 was my first time running Bayshore and it lived up to all of my expectations. The course is fast with only slight rolling hills. The views along the bay are spectacular. Aid stations are plentiful and well staffed. Post-race refreshments were good, but not great. The medal is good also. There are many entertainment options before and after the race in Traverse City, which make this a good destination for a long marathon weekend.

Beautiful course, well supported race.

This was my first small marathon. The best-kept secret about this is that the last half of the course (return 13.1 miles) was basically downhill. The course is not flat, but there are lovely gentle hills bordering the lake and encouraging running when one is hitting the wall around mile 19. I PR'd here and encourage new runners to try it. The half marathon that was included started their runners at the opposite end of the out-and-back course - a nice touch.

Scenic Course. Small Race. Ideal for First-Timers.

This was my first marathon, and I thought I made a good choice picking the Bayshore Marathon. The course is flat and very scenic. It loops around the east arm of the grand traverse bay and is shaded. The race organization was also great. Aid stations were at 1.5 miles, with GU at 12, 14 and 20 miles. The Brooks technical shirt was nice. They can improve the spectator access points to the race. Register early, as this race tends to get full quickly. Hotel prices also skyrocket if you don't get them early. I stayed at B&B Wellington Inn close to the race. Overall, a very good first marathon experience. The ice cream at the end was a nice touch and the finisher medal was awesome. I reached my goal: finish my first marathon (5:15:06).

Small race with big heart and great organization

Bayshore was one of those idyllic small-town races with fans in lawn chairs playing music for the runners and terrific families and high school runners manning aid stations. There was plenty of water stops and the Gu was abundant. And what can I say for the course itself? You have Grand Traverse Bay on one side and beautiful homes and wineries on the other... definitely enough to look at to make the miles go right by! Fellow runners were friendly and supportive... it is the Midwest after all! Because it is an out-and-back, you get to see your family and friends a couple times... mine were able to see me at about 10 and 15, and then make it back with plenty of time to see me finish. Race organization rivals any of the bigger races. Race tee was a nice Brooks technical tee (but for the ladies out there, make sure to order a larger size than you normally wear) and the finisher's medals were awesome! Even though I personally had a rough day, this race was so good that I will be back time and again! P.s. One more piece of advice: run in the middle of the road when at all possible. The road is pretty crowned.

Great course if it is your 1st or 99th marathon!

I am from Michigan, and the Traverse City has a lot of memories for me. Needless to say, it was very appropriate to run my first marathon here. Coming off of four years running NCAA D1 cross-country and track, I wanted to try a marathon out. It is a great course. Minimal hills and great shade for the beginning of the race. Water stations are positioned every two miles, which makes it nice mentally and physically to get through the marathon. This is an EXCELLENT course, whether for first timers or if it is your 100th marathon! The city is great, with fantastic people and locals. Plus there are great activities pre- and post-race for you to experience. I recently moved out to Washington and I am coming home specifically to run the marathon again this year! Do not be surprised by the humidity in Michigan, especially this time of year. Michigan is notorious for its high humidity, so it can be a shock if you are not used to that type of weather.

A highly recommended race

Bayshore was my 41st marathon and I have done a lot of previous races in many different cities like Chicago, Disney; Grandma; Marine Corps, Flying Pig. The first impression I had of Bayshore was very positive since the folks responded to all my questions on a very timely basis , no matter how trivial. It gave me a very good impression of the type of organizers. I do not think you get these responses from the big races. Bayshore is one of the scenic races that I have done along with Big Sur, Cape Cod, Erie, Adirondacks. It runs along the bay most of the time and is shaded 75% . It is out and back and this is very nice since you get to see different views of the bay. There is no traffic and the half marathoners do not interfere since they are running in the opposite direction for a lot of the time. There are a lot of gels and Gatorade on the course . Because of the set up, spectators can only see you at certain points during the race. Bayshore is better than Grandsma. The dorm rooms in Duluth is about $100/ night with a 2 night minimum. Plus Traverse City and Mackinaw are much more scenic than Duluth. Grandsma is a lot of hype. I stayed at the College the night before the race and all I had to do in the morning was to walk a few feet to the start. Bring pillows and a fan if you plan to stay at the College. I believe that they can improve the Expo to a full day ( at another location), if they wanted since they have over 4000 runners. They certainly have enough runners to attract more vendors and make it more enjoyable. The City Bank was the major sponsor but they did not have a booth at the expo. The food at the end was so-so. I cannot eat dry bagels after finishing a race. I think some bands and an announcer calling out names at the end would make this race even better. All in all I had an enjoyable time running this race. I will recommend this race highly but it gets its quota so word has certainly spread. I would do this race every year if I could but I live very far so it might not be practical. In general, I always recommend the smaller races, rather than the mega races because of the attention to details.. Just do it if you can.

Fantastic

I did the half marathon and would absolutely return for the full in 2008. Bayshore is a beautiful, scenic marathon; you are running right along the water the whole time. I was worried that it would be windy, but it was not. The half marathoners start at the halfway point of the marathon course, so the half runners and full runners are running towards each other, and it is awesome to see the first full runners blaze past. The organization is fantastic; no flaws whatsoever in race day organization, plenty of food at the end, and the results are up very quickly, within an hour at least. The weather was perfect, not too hot. Crowds were alright. Plenty of water, Gatorade, and gels on the course. It's a smaller marathon that caps, so it's not a really crowded race. It is pancake-flat and a perfect PR course.

Could not have been better!

This was my 15th marathon. I found Bayshore to have excellent pre-race communication via email and great race weekend organization. I had heard from many people how beautiful the course was and was still surprised by just how wonderful it was. I love the "out and back," and the gentle, rolling nature of the course - and I thought aid stations were appropriately placed. There were sufficient port-a-johns at the start and I appreciated the availability of showers at the finish. And the ice cream!! It is the perfect size race... very conducive for my PR, first BQ, and a negative split.

Worth the trip from England

I traveled from England especially to run the marathon. Fantastic course - and I ran my 2nd fastest marathon. The people of Traverse City made us feel very welcome. We thank them. One small complaint: my wife traveled on the supporters bus but it arrived too late for her to cheer me on. She was a bit disappointed. Apart from that, we had a great time in Traverse.

Michigan Pride

This was my first marathon in my home town and could not have been better. The weather was fabulous high 60s and sunny and the course beautiful. For a small-town race the support from the community was great. Kids set up water stands and many people blasted great Michigan music - Kid Rock, Eminem and Motown. If you are looking for a great race without all the hype, this is perfect.

Better Than Disney

This was my second marathon (I ran the Disney World Marathon in January) and I must say this was a much more enjoyable experience. Running along the bay is just beautiful and the size of the marathon allows you to really enjoy your surroundings. Having perfect weather is an added bonus. Given the size of the marathon, there is limited, though enthusiastic, fan support. The race is very well organized and the finisher's medal is almost as ostentatious as Disney's. Bayshore makes marathon running almost pleasurable. I highly recommend this race.

Great Marathon Course; Buses Need Improvement

This was a fantastic course for my first marathon. The scenery is amazing as you run right along the lakeshore. The aid stations were appropriately spaced, the volunteers were kind, and the spectators were fantastic. My only complaint was the bus service for spectators. The buses were late in the morning, and there were not enough of them. My wife was only able to see me at mile 15 due to this, and I even beat her back to the finish. In addition, there were no spectator bathrooms on the course that she could find. Needless to say, the race was great for me, but extremely frustrating for her. Overall, though, a great course for runners!

Second time around - even better

This is the second time I've run Bayshore - previously I ran it in 2006. And they really take the comments they get seriously. They added more aid stations and really just made a great marathon even better. Love the course - great support considering it's so small, and I particularly love seeing the faster runners coming at me. I've done Chicago and Cinninati, and while I loved them both, I'll be back for this one again in 2008. Plan on spending the weekend in Traverse City - it's a lovely place, with good shopping and great food!

A PR/BQ for sure!

This is the race for you if you're looking for a PR/BQ. Starting with the expo: it's nice and small and therefore very easy. The shirts are great, but a warning for the women - they run SMALL. The bibs have your name on it, which is a great touch. Race morning went unbelievably smoothly. There was plenty of parking in the college lots. Also the lots are super close to the start line so you could stay in your car to stay warm until it's time to go. The course itself was perfect. Literally perfect. I loved the out-and-back because after the turn everything was familiar - no surprises at all. It was shaded about 95% of the course and there were some slight rolling inclines - not even enough to call hills, but enough of an incline so that it wasn't perfectly flat. Aid stations were wonderful. The designated crowd support areas were placed perfectly, also with lots of enthusiastic cheerers. I loved finishing on the track - there were tons of people cheering as you entered the track which was fun. Another thing I noticed was how NICE all the other runners were. Everyone said encouraging things to fellow runners, whether they were doing the passing or being passed. I really felt a part of something great. Hopefully this race will stay small - it's so much more fun to run a race with room to actually RUN. Running Fit is a store downtown that takes pictures of all the runners and hangs them up all over their store for you to pick up after the race. That was a neat touch. Also I loved the medals - they were the best I've gotten. The only problem is that they need about 20 more volunteers in the last mile to direct traffic. When I was leaving the directors had me and some other cars on the wrong side of the road, so the poor runners had to run around the cars. It was awful, especially at mile 25. All in all, I give this race an A+. I had a PR of 17 minutes from a marathon I'd done a month before, which had also been a PR, and ended up qualifying for Boston with five minutes to spare! Take advantage of this amazing small race - I have a feeling this is one that will be filling up earlier and earlier every year.

Great route and resort town - bring the family!

This was my second marathon. The route was great - enjoyed running along the Bay. The weather couldn't have been better. The packet pick-up, parking, food, track finish, and the technical shirt in women's sizing were all great. My husband wants to come back next year so he can run and I can be the curb crew. I think I'll have to negotiate running too. The spectator buses had their problems but there were so many wonderful things about the location and the race that we'll be back.

This race will spoil you - 26-minute PR

Course - There were some minor short rises on the route. I'm sure there are some flatter courses out there but not too many. Support/Aid Stations - You'd have to have a personal support crew for it to get any better. I have never run a marathon without my water pack and Gu - with the consistently good support on this race I didn't need my pack, and that's a lot of weight I can ditch next time. Tech Shirt - Very nice. Twin Cities is the only one nicer that I have. Medal - Really nice. Colorful ribbon instead of just a solid color. Finisher Medal - Nicer looking then my age division award from another race. Showers - RD provided them at the school campus - this was fine. It's a shame that the hotels in the area wouldn't provide late checkouts for a fee. I got this feedback from several runners that used the campus showers. Food - Pre-race pasta party was a nice option if from out of town; but, I'd skip it next time just to try one of the local joints. Finish Line - Food was nice. If you like ice cream you will be in heaven. Water was my first desire and it was handed to me with my medal - thanks. Overall - I came off a PR in March and still PR'd by another 26 minutes. I know the support had to play in this. When I think I'm closing in on a BQ time I'll probably consider this course because of the support, weather, and the fact that the town has plenty of things for my family to do also.

Excellent Course, Well Organized, Runner-Friendly

Generally, if you don't like this race, then you should stop running. The course is great and generally the organization was terrific. My only complaint is that the clock was started when the half marathon started, which turned out to be two minutes early. This lead to an unpleasant surprise as I ran toward the finish line and saw that I was over 3 hours, but my Garmin said 2:58. The official times were correct, however. So, no harm, no foul. The course is basically flat and very fast. It is also exceedingly pretty, especially from somebody who runs on the streets of the west side of Chicago. Not many spectators except for a few locations, but those that were out there were great. Enough water stops along the way, stocked with Gatorade and water. Also GU at the right mile markers. Also, plenty of port-a-potties at the start. This is one of the best. All the important things were done correctly, and the little things done well too. I consider this race to be the Midwest's version of the Clarence DeMar Marathon, which was one of the (if not the) best small marathons I've run.

This was the best of my ten marathons!

Of the ten marathons I have done, this was the best in many ways! The organization was great... packet pick up, pre-race meal, aid stations, mile markers - all were right on. The course was not pancake flat, but still fast - no long hills and very beautiful! And the weather could not have been more perfect; I kept thinking that this is near Garden of Eden conditions! I was impressed with the workers and other runners. Although I was alone, a friendly runner paced me the last five miles, helping me get a P.R. I'm excited to be BOSTON BOUND!

Great course and great weekend destination

This is a great course. Gently rolling, and very scenic running along the bay. A significant part of the course is shaded by trees, which was much appeciated, as the sun started to warm things up. There were pockets of very enthusiastic fans. Frequently the homeowners were out to cheer the runners on. The event was well organized. The finisher's medal, while not as unique as some, was substantial and of top quality. The age group award medal was unique, and I was fortunate enough to take one home. Traverse City is also a great destination for the weekend. Travel up the peninsulas and visit the lighthouses and the wineries. Unfortunately asparagus is the only fresh produce available at the roadside markets this time of year. My only complaint isn't for me. Rather a friend of mine who was running in the top 10 missed a turn somewhere around mile 19. The course workers either weren't paying attention, or the course was not adequately marked for runners who tend to get brain-dead at that stage. Either way, this should never happen. He ran nearly 2 extra miles and still finished under 3 hours! That said, most of us slower mortals will always have people to follow and never experience this problem. Put this one in your plans for 2008!

Beautiful!

Couldn't have ordered a better race day! Granted, the organizers can't attribute the weather to their planning skills, but the remainder of the race was a credit to them, so they might as well take credit for the weather also! Beautiful, well supported course, AND a technical shirt to boot! The medal was unspectacular, and the expo was nonexistent, but those are pretty minor points in the whole scheme of things.

First-class marathon

This was my 89th marathon/ultra-marathon and it was top-notch! Well organized from registration to packet pickup and throughout the race. Scenic course with a cool breeze coming off the bay; about half of the course being shaded by rows of trees between the shoreline and the road. There are so many races I want to run in the U.S. and overseas, but I could see myself returning to Traverse City somewhere down the road to run this race again. I also agree with the comments about this area being a great vacation spot to bring friends or family.

Most beautiful course!

This event was in the neatest little town! What a great little business strip with fun shops. The people were so nice. Very easy course - can't even call it rolling. It had no hills on it. This is a must-do run! Too pretty to miss... and we had great weather this year. We ran the entire race along the lake. There were vineyards, orchards, pretty flowers, beautiful homes, and neat little beaches. A truly first-class event. You start at a school so that you can use their bathrooms, for you anti-porta-potty people. There was race-day packet pickup for those who don't get anywhere early. But you should use the long weekend and stay in this great town. You will be glad that you did. Plenty of rest stops, and nice people everywhere... no traffic. It just doesn't get much better than this!

Bayshore does it right!!!! THANK YOU!

This was my third marathon. I picked it because of the comments here on MarathonGuide.... It sounded wonderful and I was looking for a fast run with great weather in an effort to qualify for Boston. THIS IS A FABULOUS EVENT! This is a beautiful course along the water. It is a small event, but so well done that if I EVER repeat a race, it would be this one. The course is flat, and flat-out gorgeous. I did not believe it would be as shaded or flat as advertised, but it was. Mile markers, hydration stations, and Gu were right on target. Very well manned and very easy to navigate while running. The field was small enough (1,700 in the marathon) that I was never alone, nor was it crowded. I had never run a race with so small a field, and I thought this one was perfect number-wise. This has quite possibly changed my view on smaller races. Quality over quantity. The fans along the course were so enthusiastic. The finish on the local track is excellent. It is almost like a victory lap and the soft track feels so good on your knees at the very end. And the post-race food was fantastic: bagels, cookies, ice cream, yogurt, etc. - very nice and plentiful. The race organizers even swept up the shirts and jackets runners had discarded along the course and brought them to the end so people could find their things. The weather in northern Michigan was as if they had ordered it specially for the marathon, and I was so glad... 50's to start and mid to upper 60s (it seemed) by the end. Despite minimal training due to a pulled muscle, I turned in a PR and beat my Boston requirement by 15 minutes. The Bayshore Marathon medal is also the nicest I've ever seen.... I highly, highly recommend this race. Traverse City itself is a very inviting, enjoyable city to visit. Traverse City Bayshore is a well-run, class event. If you run in Michigan, do this marathon. THANK YOU, BAYSHORE MARATHON, AND MAY YOU RUN MANY MORE....

Great Course, Organization, and Shirt

This is a great race; weather was perfect and the volunteers kick ass. Not a lot of spectator locations available, but the organizers did bus people to the spots, which I thought was cool. Aid stations were placed well; I think they used to do every 2 miles, but this year they said it was about every 1.5. My GPS watch picked up an extra .15 miles between miles 11 and the half - it's usually pretty accurate so I'd love to see if anyone had this happen, because I could have used that extra minute! The technical shirt they gave is one of the nicest I've seen - great to get one that isn't white for once! The out-and-back course has a slight incline on the way out, so hill training might be a good idea. Outside of the race, this is a great town to visit for a long weekend; we camped and went to wineries on Saturday and Sunday. I think I may have to start making this an annual trip.

Good First Marathon.

This was my first marathon and it was a good first choice, I think. Not a lot of crowds. Post-race food was ok. Would have liked to have had granola or trail mix or something more healthy in the "bread/grain" department than cookies.

Bottom line - The best marathon in Michigan

I've run Detroit and Cleveland prior to running Bayshore and without question - this was the best. Going into it, I didn't expect a lot of crowd support since it was such a scenic route. I was so wrong. The crowds were amazing and really kept you moving. The scenery is fantastic, and the aid stations were all very well organized. No matter if this is your first marathon or you are a seasoned veteran, DO THIS RACE!

Good overall race

Very good organization overall. Enough porta-potties at the start/finish line. Well placed aid stations along the course. Very pretty course! Only problem I had with the course was the severe slope of the road at times, which put a strain on my legs. Spectators were only found at a few locations but were very encouraging and enthusiastic. Perfect small race!

This is a great, small race, with natural beauty, that is well organized before and during race - and the fans are awesome! The locals get into the race and show their support. Ice cubes, oranges, pitchers of water to throw on you, lawn sprinklers on, radios blasting music along the way and even offers of beer to drink. The course is flat and scenic all the way. Two small grades some say are hills, but they are hardly noticeable. Northern Michigan and the Traverse City area offer a lot pre- and post-race activities. Running Fit free photos are a nice touch. Finish line food is ample and good. The shirts seem to run small, so maybe order a larger size than normal. Women receive women's shirts - nice touch.

Amazing Experience (again)

This is a great marathon. This was the third year in a row that I've run it and each year the experience gets a little better. From registration to packet pick up to after-race refreshments, the volunteeres and organization were top-notch. It was also great to see homeowners at the edge of their driveways cheering on total strangers. Some motivation! The only thing Bayshore needs to improve for 2008 is the bussing of spectators to race spots. My wife had to hitchhike back to the finish to make sure she was there before me. Other than that, a perfect experience!

Will be back again someday!

This was my first half-marathon and I could not have asked for a prettier course (motivation), better spectators (thank you to the couple who rescued me by allowing me to use their bathroom when there wasn't one in sight and considering that I'm not yet comfortable with going "behind the bush"), or more comfortable weather - about 60 degrees. I finished under my goal of 2:30 and my friend, who ran the marathon, qualified for Boston with a 3:35! With the out-and-back marathon course, it was a real energy boost to see her running toward me on her way to the marathon halfway point! I had a great time and would definitely come back again! My only recommendation to the organizers: straighten out which lane the cars and runners need to be in toward the finish - I was dodging cars on my way into the track finish and we dodged runners on our way out of the parking lot. Decide which side and stick to it!

Bayshore is Fantastic!

This is a great small-town marathon for those of us interested in fast times, not large crowds. The course is very fast, bordering on easy (as easy as 26.2 miles can be). The spectators, while limited, are also limited to specific viewing points, which means you get a nice boost 5-6 times through the race due to the mass crowd in those locations. Complaints about water stops previously seem to have been addressed because they were not at the mile markers this year. The size is perfect, and due to the half marathon starting at the turnaround of the full marathon, very few half marathoners are in your way by the time you're finishing. The one snag was the bus for spectators. Nobody knew what the deal was for my wife, so she had to drive. Overall it was just a fantastically organized race in a great area to hang out in for a few days. Beautiful! Don't miss this race!

One of the most beautiful courses I've run.

I've run 15 marathons and will say this was one of the most beautiful courses I've run. I like the out-and-back course. The spectacular view of the bay is on one side and one beautiful home after another on the other side. I'd say 75% of the course was in the shade. A big bonus. The town is great, lots of great stores and restaurants. This is a great place to bring along the non-runners in the family. I will be doing this one again.

Heaven in 2007

The day could not be any more perfect. Cool at the start and not too warm during the race. The course was great as advertised. Running along a shaded bay, what could be better? The spots on the course where the crowds gathered were fun and definitely got me going. I even got what I came for at the finish, my Boston Qualifier. Scenic and friendly!

What a great way to have a mini vacation in a beautiful place. Running along the shaded tree-lined course allowed us protection from the sun, but we still had a cool breeze off the water. The out-and-back course meant we could cheer on the elite runners and half marathoners as they passed back our way. There were also plenty of aid stations and you definitely didn't need to carry all your own Gu like I did. With the smaller number of spectators than bigger races (I previously ran Detroit), you can set your goal pace right from the start. This is a fast course. I made my personal goal with 5 minutes to spare and I'm running it again in two months with the aim of qualifying for Boston!

Flat and Beautiful

The Bayshore was my first marathon and the only thing holding me back from running it again would be my quest for the fifty states. The course was very flat and all along Lake Michigan, providing beautiful scenery. Also, it was a smaller race and I don't like a lot of people crowding the course. The weather is perfect this time of year in Michigan. There was water every other mile and all flavors of GU exactly where promised, perfect for those slightly anal marathon runners. Traverse City is great, as well. This would be a great race to bring the family and friends and make a weekend of it. My mom and sister didn't have a problem getting to viewing spots along the course and it was great to hear them cheering.... Of course, they'll be running this year. Anyways, great race... I turned in a Boston Qualifying time! And it is also a great intro marathon if you are looking for a good first one.

Excellent course with great atmosphere.

This was my first Bayshore, but it will not be my last. Looking forward to 2007. After running Disney 3 times, a marathon with fewer participants is quite fun. Great spectator support just at the right times. Way to go TC. Love the finish on the track.

Great small marathon

This is a great marathon to make a family weekend getaway. Northern Michigan is beautiful and the out-and-back course along the bay is awesome. I personally didn't like the addition of the 1/2 marathon this past year, but still loved the overall experience of this race.

Run this one and enjoy the beauty of northern Mich

Great scenery and support during the race. Spectators were in the way on the track where runners were to finish. It was a recipe for a fall or injury.

Good, but could be better...

My only complaint is the end, where you run through part of the parking lot - cars were in my way, and I ended up having to weave my way through moving vehicles. Why wasn't this blocked off??? Other than that, great race. I got my PR here....

A great, well-run race

I'm 55, and this is my second marathon. Detroit in 2005 and 2006 Bayshore. I can't thank the TC Track Club enough for their great effort in organizing and running this race. Great course, friendly atmosphere - no negative impressions whatsoever. I will be back in 2007.

Great First Marathon

Since this was my first, I wasn't sure what to expect. However, the course along the water turned out to be beautiful - just a little "jaunt" out to a cone and back to the finish; the spectators were great (even playing a little Johnny Cash and "Eye of the Tiger"); and the city was great, too. I would recommend staying at the Parkplace Hotel downtown - it's right near the Running Fit store where you'll get free race pics! :) This is a race to take friends/family along - the city has a lot to offer during the holiday weekend and it really shows everyone how Michigan does summer! A great first marathon that'll make you want to run another!

friendly and beautiful

This was a great first 'small' marathon, and my first experience with an out-and-back course. It was fun to cheer on the half-marathoners (who started at the turn-around point) and the faster marathon runners as they went by. Having the spectators concentrated at a half-dozen 'access' areas is a great idea... the noise and enthusiasm of those groups rivaled the crowds at the base of NY's Queensboro Bridge! And many homeowners along the way gave out orange wedges or water, and they played music (lots of Springsteen) and sprayed runners with hoses on request. The finish on the track was awesome, and you can't beat a post-race food area that includes Cold Stone ice cream. I do wish they gave out more splits on the course (only available at the halfway point), and that the workers at the aid stations filled the cups more than 1/3 to 1/2 way, especially on such a warm day. Traverse City is a great place to visit. I recommend wine-touring on the penninsulas as a perfect post-race activity.

Make this your Michigan marathon

Great course, great people, beautiful run. Race organizers added an 800-person half this year. Didn't impact those of us running north as they passed us going south nearly as much as I thought. Didn't seem like 800 at all and it was nice to have some more runners to root for. Friendly, friendly people all around. Course is pretty flat. If you think the gentle rolling terrain that does exist on the course are hills, you must live in Chicago or Florida. Shade saved us on a day that was warmer than the norm for this time of year. If you are doing the 50-state thing, this has to be your Michigan marathon.

I love this race!

It is truly a beautiful area of the world and the people are great. I just wanted to add that the course is truly lovely but it is NOT pancake flat as some previous people have commented. The grade is gentle and rolling...no real tough hills, but expect some long minor uphill and downhill grades. It's still doable for beginners, and in fact, I would recommend it for first timers. It is a friendly race and the area is worth sticking around for to visit for a few days.

Sometimes everything seems just perfect!

The Bayshore Marathon was one of those experiences where it seems everything in life is just perfect. The beautiful course along the lake provides the beauty of the water and the forest. The mature homes and roadway provide a canopy of trees that protect from the sun and...if there were any...the wind. Aid Stations were well placed, the out and back course added to the ambiance, the mostly level but some rolling hills adds the variety that improves finish times and attitude, the start parking and high school arena parking made for easy access. This was my 32nd marathon and the first one I've been in where the ladies were given a true female shirt rather than everyone being given men's shirts. A true plus and attention to detail. The community support is terrific; a plenty-smart running store took pictures of the runners and then pasted them all over their downtown store so runners could get a good quality free picture shortly after the race. Traverse City is a fun old downtown city that is walker friendly, clean and inviting and a nice place to be post race. This is a terrific first, middle, Boston Qualifier, or latest marathon for anyone.

Can't wait until next year!

Of course, I never need an excuse to go up north. Tony Bennett left his heart in San Francisco; mine is left in NW Michigan. Did the half and really liked it. I was surprised that I finished last in my age group but I guess I was competing against primarily runners, not runner/walkers. However, I was never alone on the course. Loved the friendly spectators (having people respond positively to the college named on my shirt really put a pep in my step), the route, the organized packet pick-up and bus drop-off. Liked the track finish. The only change I suggest is to have shirts for the half participants instead of the bag. Can never have enough Dri-Fit-type shirts.

BEAUTIFUL, just not enough water on the course

The race was great; it is so nice that it makes it hard to hold back from running too fast. But the only problem was that there wasn't enough water on the course - since it was only every two miles, you could get dehydrated pretty easily. I would recommend bringing some with you if you plan on running this race. But other than that it was GREAT!

A great first time experience!

My first full marathon. Well done in every way. I loved the area, the course, the sincere/simple support from locals, the areas where people could view the course... The course scenery and shade is great. The temp was above the norm but no one can control that. My only problem was I was not as ready for what seemed like more (moderate/slight) grade running than advertised. The amount of serious hills is minimal but the course has several long up/down grades. First timers will need to do some hill work. Several hit a 'wall' around 19/20 miles where a steady slope exists. It got me bad but there could be a next time when I beat it ....

Fantastic!

Loved this marathon and the course. Its as close to flat as you can get. There are a few rolling hills but nothing worth mentioning and really nothing that did much more than stretch your legs out. It's a gorgeous town and perfect scenery to entertain. The spots that are available for spectators (with the exception of one) are very easy to access. Organization and water stops were fantastic. Only downside is that they are every 2 miles and if you want them closer, you should carry your own. Though there was a sweet, sweet man and his wife and granddaughter around mile 23/24 that were handing out cups of water due to the heat. That's the wonderful kind of crowd support you get from the locals here. Also, lots of people just sitting on lawn chairs in their front yard cheering you on or playing music. I'd highly recommend this one!!!

I can't add anything that has not already been said. I recommend staying for a few days. Stay up in the peninsula at Bowers Harbor B&B. Best course I've ever run

This course is the best I've experienced and I've done Disney and Chicago. One very small hill at the 1/2 split but otherwise pancake-flat. The course runs on the east coast of a wooded peninsula with a hill running up the spine so any wind is dampened greatly and the wind here is usually out of the west. The spectators were few but that's the way I like it; I've had enough cowbells in Chicago to last a lifetime and the Disney characters sort of got on my nerves. The water was a little more spread out for my liking but not bad enough to carry your own. Running Fit provided race photos free, which was a nice touch. The course was shaded more than not. There was some light residential traffic, but it wasn't a factor. I ran this one as a spirit runner for a friend so it took me 2 hours longer than I'm used to, but the course was so easy and the scenery so good that it didn't matter. I wish they were all this nice.

Even though I had a slow race Saturday, this event definitely delivers. I got to see my wife four times during the race including the finish. Plus, this is a beautiful region to enjoy nature and the wonderful town of Traverse City. It was a beautiful day for a race!

Great scenic route; good course to PR

This marathon is true to its word; it is scenic and fast. While not completely flat, it had what I would call small rolling "hills," which were very manageable. Organization was great with local hotels providing good coverage and support. Although there were not a great number of spectators (mind you, the organizers don't hide the fact that spectators are limited, the one's that were out there were loud and supportive). The race is run along the lake which is beautiful and mostly in shade. The fact that it was so scenic offset the fact that it was an out-and-back marathon. I did PR and qualify for Boston... definitely will be back as it is a great weekend getaway as well.

put mile split markers before the aid station

When you approach the mile split and there is an aid station there also, please put the marker well in front of the aid station so the runners can push the split time on their watch and then get the cup of water or Gatorade. It is hard to juggle all of that at once. Runners like to see the split time on the watch and know if they are on pace. When you give us the aid at the same time, it is hard to manage both.

Amazing home-town feel, world-class quality race.

My assigned vacation week fell at the end of May this year, so I naturally decided to take that opportunity to try to qualify for Boston. After researching all of the marathons happening that week (quite a number!) I chose Bayshore and was delighted with that decision. Highlights of the race for me: 1) Qualifying for Boston!:) 2) Getting to meet a lot of very friendly, dedicated, great runners before, during and after the race. 3) The pictures posted that afternoon at the running store - very fun to peruse all the pix. 4) Great Brooks shirt that I actually can use! 5) Amazingly scenic route, tremendous weather. Really the only negatives with this race were the difficulties my family had finding spectator points, and I was not fond of the Ultima as everyone else has mentioned! I would definitely give this race a hearty recommendation and also advise that you spend a few days enjoying the lovely Traverse City region.

The air and scenery are tough to beat!

This was Marathon #2 for me. I live in Utah (high altitude) so I greatly enjoyed breathing in the rich, clean, heavy air of Traverse City. I loved it! This marathon could attract more people if they only knew how ideal the running conditions are. Running with 62-degree weather, partly cloudy skies, light breeze, and a flat course the whole way. The course is mostly surrounded by the bay, trees and forests, and very expensive houses. There is plenty to admire about Traverse City. I forgot pins for my number and my time chip! The organizers were very helpful and helped me start the race on time. Some of the benefits of a larger race weren't to be found, but I enjoyed the peaceful amount of spectators and the ease of registration, leaving, etc. The food after was very, very well done, I ate enough for a few meals. Great job Traverse!

Great venue, fast course

I ran this for the 4th time this year, and it couldn't have been better. The course is mostly flat, scenic, and the weather each year has been fabulous. The course is out-and-back, and stretches up the Old Mission peninsula of Grand Traverse Bay, mostly along the water. Traffic is minimal, and since the field is small, there is really no congestion for the runners. The course ends with a one-lap run on a track by the start, and each participant's name is spoken over the P.A. as he/she enters the track.

Great course, good fan support and scenery.

My tenth and favorite marathon! Nice shirt, friendly people, good fan support and good/consistent water/replenishment support throughout the course. I give it an A. However, there were a couple of splits that were a fraction long/short. Also, aid stations sit right on top of mile splits, which makes it difficult to keep track of your splits. I would love to come back and do it again, though!!!

Organized with pride of ownership

The way the Traverse City Track Club runs this marathon reminds me of a family run business where the owners couldn't stand the thought of putting their name on something less than a quality product. All in all I'm more of a city runner but the scenery was great and 1400 runners was a nice size. After seeing the reviews of the Chicago Lakeshore Marathon, I recommend some of those runners swing around the lake and head to Traverse City for this one next year.

great race

This is a great race. GREAT volunteers! I 'conned' a couple of the volunteers to walk or run with me for a couple minutes at miles 13, 14 and 16. :) They were SO nice even to us in the back... My only complaints are 1) get rid of the Ultima. Gatorade is better. 2) have more water stops. At least every 1.5 miles instead of 2, and every 1 mile would be even better. This is especially nice when you are by yourself and you have no crowd support. Those volunteers are life-savers! The course is absolutely beautiful! Overall, this is a SUPER race (even though I had a bad day, mentally just wasn't into it), and one I'd run again. The running store that sponsors this race was great. We even got free socks! :) There was supposed to be ice cream at the finish, but it was gone by the time I got there. The best was that my friends who ran the last little bit with me were allowed to cross the finish line with me! How cool!! :) Most races won't allow that, but these folks were just NICE! OH, one more thing, the Best Western is the closest to the race start. Bayshore Resort was nice, but not necessary unless you are going for a vacation. Did I mention that the course is beautiful?! Definitely worth running. Definitely a PR'able course.

Truly fabulous race

This was my husband Don's and my third marathon. We ran the Marine Corps Marathon in 2003, and I thought that was great, but this one tops that...by far. The staff, director, spectators, water station volunteers, etc were wonderful. We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express, who gave us an extreme discount, and were friendly. The weather could not have been better if we had specially ordered it. I am a complainer by nature, and this holiday left me speechless with its perfection. Traverse City was beautiful, tourist-friendly, excellent. We are going to do this one every other year, because we fell in love with the city. I actually felt homesick when I left. I loved the trail we ran, alongside the water, gorgeous homes, and lots of trees. If you do, but one marathon a year, make this race the one you accomplish!

Beautiful Course, Great Weather, Perfect Weekend!

An outstanding course which is an out and back along the beautiful Grand Traverse Bay. Very gently rolling terrain with no hills to speak of. Sparse spectators but homeowners were out in full force giving us support. Easy course to keep an even pace on if you are trying to qualify for Boston. Tree covered in many areas which kept the sun from bothering you. Could have been better if the fluid stations were a bit closer together (instead of every two miles) and if they served Gatorade instead of Ultima. Great medals and awesome town to eat in and party race evening. I highly recommend this race to all who want to experience the best small marathon around.

A fast, beautiful course; great organization!

This race features gorgeous views of the Grand Traverse Bay and a course that's ideal for anyone looking for a Boston qualifier or PR. The terrain is flat to slightly rolling, but there's nothing that could really be called a hill. I prefer this slight variation to a pancake-flat course like Chicago, as it allows you to naturally vary your stride and eases the workload on your legs. With only about 1200 runners, there is plenty of room to run right from the beginning. Aid stations are well organized. This is an 'old school' race without the bells and whistles--no pasta dinner, giant expo, online runner tracking, huge cheering multitudes, etc. Just solid organization, superb friendly volunteers, good post-race refreshments. The T-shirt is the best race shirt I've seen, a high-quality coolmax shirt by Brooks that I will enjoy training in this summer. Most of the course is not closed to traffic, but this is absolutely not a problem; I only saw a few cars. Spectators are few but enthusiastic. This is simply a great small race, and I thank the organizers and volunteers for helping me reach Boston!

Fast scenic course

This was my first marathon. I will run it again in 2005 as my third, hoping to qualify for Boston. This fast course is great for spectators. With a map and an idea of your pace, they can meet you at several points along the route and still get back to the finish. The weather was perfect, but remember this is Michigan, so be prepared. Breathtakingly beautiful

Traverse City is my home town. Seven years ago, when I started running (at age 43), I could never have imagined doing a marathon. Bayshore was my 8th. It was an amazing experience to run roads I have driven all my life. I felt more intimately connected with the peninsula and bay than I ever have. I also ran in memory of my mom who died three weeks before the race. She was incredibly supportive of my running. I am biased. It was a perfect day, weather- and temperature-wise. The course has a lovely, gentle roll. Not entirely flat (boring). The spectators were great. Plenty of aid stations. Well organized. Good energy.

Bayshore was my first marathon, and it was an outstanding experience. The out-and-back course is pretty close to flat, and the scenery is gorgeous. My family was able to meet me near Mile 23 and get back to the finish with no hassles, which really helped me through the last miles. The Brooks running shirt was also a cool bonus, especially when you consider the entry fee for this race is just $40.

In one word, BEAUTIFUL!

Bayshore was my 11th marathon, second time I've run the course. Just beautiful. The course is rolling not flat. Great support at the aid stations. They have Ultima to drink, which tasted horrible. The course is not closed to traffic, however, wasn't too bad to deal with in my opinion. I do wish Bayshore organizers would put more port-a-pottys on the course. Just a few were out there. They totally need more, as a friend I was running with had no choice but to wait 5-6 min for the port-a-potty! The shirts were great. I will be back to run this again and again. Running along the water is just beautiful. This race keeps getting better and better every time I run it.

WOW!!!!

This is the second time I've run this marathon, and it remains my favorite for several reasons:(1) basically flat but beautiful course; (2) not crowded - 1,300 runners is just right, and I was able to hit pace right away; (3) awesome organization - packet pick-up was smooth, plenty of support on the course, and well staffed aid stations; (4) friendly - the staff was great, and even the RD e-mailed me in response to a quick question within an hour of me e-mailing him; (5) great Dri-Fit t-shirt; (6)a nice pre-race meeting that you won't get at a big marathon; (7) cool pre-race e-mail updates; and (8) it's wonderful location for a get-away. I could go on and on... However, if you want to run a big megathon - this isn't for you. Thanks TCTC. Great job again. The names on the bibs were a cool addition - it's a little thing that makes a big difference. You folks did everything right. I'll be back again!

This is THE Michigan marathon for all you 50 staters. When your old running buddies talk fondly of how races use to be, this is the race that they're talking about. The one that gives them that twinkle in their eye about road racing. Real laid back. Great organization. Friendly people who made my day special and so much fun. Thanks a ton. Worth the 7 hour drive and more. The course is a fun out-and-back with a few rolling grades. No killer hills here. Really. Most of the course is shaded and the locals who live along the way came out and cheered. Kids were a blast at the water stops.

So good it was like magic!!

This was my first marathon, and I don't think it could have been any better. The weather was perfect--40 at the start and gradually climbing to the high 50s. The course was great--very flat and scenic. I really enjoyed the out & back since it gave me a chance to see the leaders and everyone else. The volunteers were enthusiastic and the fans kind of adopted the runners. It was great to hear strangers who moved along the course shouting, 'There she is!' I entered with 4 other first-timers and we all had great experiences. The TC Track Club knows how to do a great race! One downer: Most hotels require a 2-night stay, so this was a bit of a pain, since we only needed 1 night. Be sure to call early.

Very nice medium-sized (1000 finishers) marathon.

Bayshore was a very nice marathon. The website was easy to use; following registration, nice email updates were sent out; good communication. Packet pickup was conducted by friendly, helpful volunteers; very nice t-shirt; other items (hats, long-sleeved items, Gu, etc.) were available for purchase. The out-and-back course, which was along a bay of Lake Michigan, was very scenic; race course was not flat, rather it was mostly rolling hills; the majority of course was shaded. The one 'busy' section with cars was not a problem; a large emergency lane used by runners was separated from the cars with lots of traffic cones. The weather was perfect for running; a very cool day for Memorial Day weekend. The spectators were mostly locals living along race course and family/friends of runners (race director provided a nice map to help runners' supporters find places to see and cheer runners). Any lack of spectators was replaced by the friendliness of fellow runners; I ran with 4 different people from MI along the course and enjoyed the conversation and support from each. Water/Ultima was available every 2 miles by friendly, smiling, supportive volunteers (Gu was available at 2 aid stations after the halfway point; I carried my own). The finish is on a college track with lots of cheering spectators; this was nice after having run 26.0 miles (the step-up onto the curb to get to the track could be difficult for some this late in the race). The finisher's medal was nice, and there was a good choice of post-race snacks (water, bananas, cookies, etc.) available. Best of all, wonderful hot showers were available at the college PE building, which was close by the finish area. Overall, this was a very nice medium-sized marathon. I would highly recommend it to others (50 Staters - this is a great choice for a Michigan marathon).

Awesome marathon race experience!

I chose this race for my first marathon due in large part to the comments on this site, as well as those of local running buddies. I was not disappointed! The course is out and back, run along the east arm of the Grand Traverse Bay - beautiful. The course is generally flat, with some rolling hills. The race organization was great. The number of runners (limited to 1300) seemed just about right for the course - always people around me, but never crowded. I highly recommend this race - but sign up early - it filled this year a month before the race.

A very nice race

Bayshore is my 12th. Marathon and I found it to be very nice. The organization of the race is very good. The course is out and back, mostly flat and scenic with great views of the lake. There are a few rises and dips along the way with the biggest being at the turn-around at the 13-mile point. It would be comparable to a small highway overpass. The course is not closed to traffic but I found that not to be a problem. Water stations were staffed by enthusiastic volunteers. Thanks! Spectator support was strong considering this is a small race. I was able to smash my PR in this race! The t-shirt is a high quality technical shirt and suitable for running. The medal has a nice design. I found local hotels and restaurants to be very good and available. It would be nice if the race had a pasta dinner. A quality race!

Great PR Course

Small-town marathon in a beautiful part of the country. The course has everything going for it: flat, plenty of shade, protected from the wind and scenic. You'd have to run on an indoor track to find better. Aid stations were well laid out. Weather couldn't have been better for this one: cool but warming up through the run. This had everything I look for including a great high-tech Brooks t-shirt that is as good as any I have bought in a running store.

A gem!

This is a first rate marathon. The course reminded me of a Midwest Big Sur, with the water (Grand Traverse Bay), the beautiful homes, and curving road. No big hills, just steady inclines and rollers. If you're looking for a marathon with a big expo, seminars, vendor reps, and an overloaded goodie bag, you've come to the wrong place. But if you can handle 26.2 miles of breathtaking scenery, a well-organized packet pickup at the high school gym, self-serve gear check and free parking... then don't pass this one up! The 2004 shirt (Brooks tech) is cool, too. Bayshore has proven that less is more!

Beautiful, fast course, well organized, friendly

A beautiful (even better than Grandma's, Marine Corps, etc.), fast (fairly well shaded, flat to very gently rolling) course; a small (closed at 1,300), well-organized event; held in one of Michigan's premier tourist destinations over Memorial Day weekend (enter and book rooms early); runs through beautiful, pricy resort/residential lakefront area (residents offer cheerful if subdued support); limited vehicular traffic exposure not a problem; plenty of water and Ultima stations and toilets; comforting presence of bicycling medical/support personnel; finishes on very soft (relief!) high school track with plenty of room (and parking) for families, etc. If you plan to run Michigan for 50 states, this is its best. If you want a fast Boston qualifier, this is it. If you want a beautiful, runner-friendly marathon for first-timers in the Midwest, you'll love it. What doesn't it have? 37,000 runners, a huge expo, elite Kenyans, huge cheering crowds, etc. If you don't need those, do this marathon.

Great first time marathon!

Thought it was a great 1st time marathon. Never felt crowded on the course. The spectators were wonderful, but I think the numbers are much smaller than the bigger marathons. Did not mind though because of the beautiful scenery. Loved the Brooks short-sleeve running shirt. The finish line food was good, bananas, oranges, yogurt, bagels, Ultima sports drink. I will definitely do this marathon again.

The Little Things Mean A Lot!

Forget about the absolutely perfect weather, the beautiful view, the friendly volunteers at the aid stations, and the better than average crowd support this year. When we picked up our race packets, we were given a shirt that a runner can actually run in! A Brooks, Dri-Fit running shirt! What a novel idea! Not a cotton t-shirt to add to the collection in the botttom of my drawer. And if that wasn't enough, my name was printed in big bold letters on my bib number. How could I not get a P.R. when total strangers on the course were yelling, 'Way to go, Linda!' and 'You're looking strong, Linda!' Nice addition guys - thanks! Running Fit takes pictures all along the course then plasters the walls in their store with them for you to pick out and take home for free. This is the second time I've run this marathon, and I plan to make it an annual event.

Great first marathon

The weather was ideal for running. The temperature wasn't too warm or too cold. The course had breathtaking views of the lakeshore. The only thing that didn't warrant 5 stars was the fans were lacking in some areas, but overall the fan support was great. Great small marathon, and a great first marathon. I'll be back next year.

A beautiful marathon course

I was just amazed at the beauty of this course. It really took your mind off of the aches and pains your body was feeling. Relatively flat (gentle rolling hills). The out/back course allowed you to see everyone else who was running. The encouragement was great. The running fit took random pictures of the runners and gave them away at their store. It was a really nice treat. The weather this year was ideal too. Started out pretty chilly (about 35 degrees but warmed up to about 55 at end of race). Perfect conditions.

First-rate, low-key marathon

This was my first marathon in 20 years. It was a wonderful re-entry point to the sport. The road is smooth and flat, and the scenery--particularly on the bay side--is spectacular. You can walk from your hotel to the start line. Everyone involved with the race was low-key and decidedly pleasant. A real treat.

Fantastic Race!!

This was my second marathon (Chicago was my first). This race was great. No crowding, and scenic, flat, fast course. A huge PR for me has me thinking about coming back next year. I would highly recommend this race to anyone. The only drawback is for those who want spectator support thoughout the whole race. My family actually enjoyed this race as spectators more than Chicago, because they were able to see me 4 times on the course, and also at the finish. Great job TCTC.

The course is absolutely beautiful!

This was my 3rd marathon, and I ran a personal best. The course is spectacular, with water on one side and cherry trees in full bloom on the other. The route is not flat. It has modest grade changes throughout the entire run. There are no hills to speak of, but there are challenging inclines and declines from beginning to end. The organization was well done. Package pick-up was simple and everyone was extremely helpful. The Kids Fun Run was perfect for my 9-year old. She enjoyed the quarter-mile run, and this helped add to my enjoyment. The organizers for this event made us all feel at home. This is a perfect marathon for the runner who can appreciate the quiet, open road. Where there were spectators, there was a lot of support and encouragement. No bands, no huge crowds, no big city hype. Just an outstanding out-&-back course that ends inside the local high school track and field complex, giving you a final 0.2 miles of unexpected cheering. The finish makes you feel like a winner... no matter what place you finish in.

Great Race for a Boston Qualifier

This race was exactly what I was looking for - fast, relatively flat, and not too crowded. I trained in the desert Southwest, so I could have used more sun and warmth, but really no complaints. Good organization, close, cheap, local hotels, and friendly runners.

Great race, great organization, great location

I've run Detroit and Chicago, and this race was, by far, the best. The course is absolutely beautiful, and there were no problems with traffic. I think the 1,000 person limit is just about right. I never felt crowded or alone. Even though there are some areas where spectators are scarce, the people who do show up (even in the rain) are wonderful. What a great time! Register early, as I know some people were shut out because of the cap. Thanks TCTC for putting on a stellar event. I'll be back!

Perfect weekend getaway - better each year!

My 3rd time at Bayshore. About 50F and overcast w/ a light mist/sprinkle. Exact same weather last 2 years. I consider this ideal for a marathon, YMMV. Hats off to TCTC for GREAT organization - they fixed the check-in SNAFU from 2002, kept the nice medal and got a REALLY COOL t-shirt design! Plan to register early. I'd guess the race cap (1,000 runners) will stay: 852 finishers this year & I don't think the course can support much more. Plenty of cheap rooms within walking distance of the race, but I'd recommend staying at a b&b. I stayed 10 minutes away @ Country Hermitage (www.countryhermitage.com) which I highly recommend. If you want to eat @ Roma's, GO EARLY. Otherwise go downtown (5 min. away) for a GREAT selection of restaurants and easy parking. Downtown is also a great place to hang out in with cafe's, bookstores, brewpub, etc.

Bayshore is a beautiful course.

This year's Bayshore was much better than last year's. The organization at packet pick-up and change of location were much more conducive to the jump in participants over the last couple of years. The aid stations were perfectly spaced and the volunteers were great. The weather could have been better, a little less rain, but we can't control that. Overall, a beautiful marathon in a great location. Closing the entire course to traffic would be a great idea. The start mat for the chip this year was also a wonderful addition.

Great small-town race. I've run Chicago and New York. It was wonderful to run a race out and back along beautiful Grand Traverse Bay. The air was fresh. The course was awesome. Even though traffic continued throughout the race, it was never a problem. The fans were great. Even with the rain, a lot of people were standing at their doors blaring music for us.

Good, Fast Race

Coming off of an injury, I was looking for a race in late May where I could put up a good time. As all marathoners should do, I did my research on Marathon Guide. Found this race in northern Michigan. Its ratings were good, so my friend and I decided to run the race. Boy, we found a good race. This is not a 'mega' race. There are no bands. No huge crowds all along the course. No gimmicks. It is a good out and back race on a flat course (it really is flat). And the course also has great scenery, as most of the course is run along the bay. The race is also the perfect size to me. With a limit of 1,000, it is small enough that you don't get caught up in the crowds. At the same time, it is big enough that you are never running alone. (It is a true out and back course, so you get the lift of seeing the rest of the runners too). The finish is also kind of neat with almost 400 meters on the local high school track. There is no real expo, but a local running store sells some logo stuff and last minutes needs (GU, gloves, etc.) at registration. Our wives were able to see us at 3-4 places fairly easily, so it was a pretty good spectator course. If you are looking for a fast race with a good small-town feel, this is the race for you.

Fantastic!!

This is a wonderful marathon. It was my first and it was such a positive experience that I can't wait until next year!! Even though it rained, was cold, and was a bit windy, the spectators were out and cheering. It is such a scenic course with the bay on one side and nice homes on the other. Plus my family could meet up with me at several points on the course and get me re-fueled. The volunteers were great; from the people on the bikes monitoring traffic to the water stations attendants, they each had words of encouragement. The last few miles get a bit lonely as everyone is gathering at the track to see the finishers, so if you need a lot of last miles encouragement, get it from deep within yourself. Plus, dinner at Roma's Italian restaurant was the best pre-race food.

Highly recommended marathon

I don't think you could find a more scenic marathon than the Bayshore. As you run along the eastern shore of the Old Mission peninsula, you see water to the east and wind-blocking trees to the west, with a few houses scattered about. Although the spectators were sparse, they were vocal and willing to cheer for anyone. Organizers have told me that chip mats will be located at the start and finish in 2003, so that should alleviate the concerns about a slow start. I believe this marathon will have to be an annual event for me!

Worth the drive - Small is beautiful too!

If you need fans cheering you on every step, this is not the race for you. If you like a small, scenic race with hotels within walking distance and easy access for spectators and friends, you can't go wrong. Traverse city is a great place to spend a weekend, and Bayshore is a great excuse to drive up for Memorial day weekend Second time for me at Bayshore this year. Recommendations are to improve the check-in process and to keep the nicer medals from this year (Last year's medals were kinda chintzy) Roma's, across from the college, has great italian food - but get reservations or go early!!!!

Great Scenery, Nice Course, Juuuuuuust right!!

This gem escaped my notice until this year, despite its approximately 20 years of existence. What a beautiful course--flat and on the lake. The 800 or so runners is a very nice change from the current trend of mob scene marathons. Nicely organized, though registration line a little (lot) too long. Register onsite to avoid the wait.

Beautiful course!

I loved this race, what a beautiful course. Fast, flat and always something to look at. I will plan to come back over and over. As far as traffic on the course, It wasn’t really an issue, there was very little traffic, and most of that were people watching their friends and family so there were moving very slowly. There were some long lines to pick up packets, but I moved through in less that 20min so it was no big deal. The number registered for the Marathon jumped from around 500 to over 850 so they were caught a little off guard, I expect them to be prepared for the bigger numbers next year. Keep in mind, this is a small race, so you are not going to get a lot of the extras you see at bigger races (No finish line photo, no mylar blanket, no clocks at each mile, limited food at the finish, no chip mat at the start). But it is a bargain, the early entry fee was $30 and since I bought a pair of shoes at Running Fit when I signed up, it only cost $20, you just can’t beat that. I would like to see a chip mat at the start, but I can live without the other stuff. Spectators were a little sparse, but if your friends/family want to see you, it is easy to get to several viewing spots.

Great Race, Bad Timing

This was a great race with all the elements there for a PR setting performance, including a flat out and back, temps in the low 40's, and decent crowd support. However, the chip timing system was lousy. The organizers didn't inform you after receiving your chip that there would only be a chip mat at the finish, not at the start. This oversight actually cost me a trip to Boston since I lined up midpack and missed qualifying by only 27 seconds. Besides that, though, I would definitely recommend this race for anyone looking for a beautiful course in a friendly town.

Flat and Scenic - CHIP TIME AT FINISH ONLY

An extremely beautiful course that takes you out and back along the water. The 7am start time is perfect for seeing the sun rising over the bay. The disappointing part of this race was that a chip was given out with the race pack, but it was not explained that the chip time was only taken at the end of the race. If you are looking to qualify for Boston make sure you are at the front of the start line or make an allowance for the time you lost by being at the back. Post food is nothing special. But there are lots of great restaurants, hotels and shopping in the area for a pre or post race vacation.

Great First Time Marathon!!

This was my daughters first marathon and my first in 25 years. It was a great experience. The volunteers on bike and along the way were not high in number, but very encouraging. The messages on the road in chalk were well placed. The day started out a little cool and I thought it would warm up. It didn't! The head wind, the sleet, the rain, were all a part of the challenge on the way back. But none of this was able to be prevented. My one and only negative comment is there were not enough porta-pots. The showers after were appreciated. This is one to put back on the calender for us. Traverse City should be proud of this race in their town.

Great course, almost too many runners

Flat scenic out-and-back course. No clocks so make sure you wear a watch. As an out an back course on two-lane roads, the field of 850 runners is about all this race can support. The first (and last) mile were on a road full of potholes. After that the course was great. A PR type of course. Poor organization meant long lines at packet pick-up. Water stops were confusing as volunteers had both powerade and water. Make sure you know what your getting. More runners than ever were drenched with red powerade. Few fans. If you need spectators, this is not the race for you.

A Good Michigan Option

If you are trying to run all 50 states, this is a great way to run a beautiful course in a spectactular part of Michigan (I am from New Hampshire). Lots of options for the family too, so it can be a good family adventure (check the dunes out). The race is well managed, but I have two improvement suggestions: first, the finish line has no 'cool down' space after the finish... you cross and immediately they want you to stop and give your chip...in about 50 feet!. Second, with only 1000 runners or so, I thought they really could have announced each finisher, the last .2 miles is on a track, so they have plenty of time to get your number, look up your name, and announce it. But, as a 'smaller' marathon, it is a great way to see a part of a beautiful state and not just do another 'big city' race. The course is very gentle, along the bay the whole way, and has lots of stuff to look at. While it is open to cars, I never thought there was a problem. Lots of hotels are right in walking distance, too!

Nice, flat course, but watch out for the cars!

This is an excellent marathon, featuring an out and back course along water. Two big improvements would make it even better: there are cars allowed on the course, even when there are runners going both ways. BAD! And the refreshments at the end were meager. Be aware of changing weather: 2002 race started out calm, sunny, and beautiful, but later it turned cloudy, windy, cold, and rainy. Hang on to those gloves!

Fantastic for a First!

Course was Beautiful - winding, flat, picturesque road along the Old Mission Peninsula. With ~650 runners, the size is great for a first marathon - plenty of portapotties and refreshments. As a small event, there were few frills (Only water and all-sport at the aid stations) but much easier to reunite and see your friends along the way. One runner's husband met her every 2 miles with her baby. My mother handed me half a banana in mile 20 for a quick refuel. Try THAT at Chicago! Traverse City and the surrounding area is perfect for a weekend getaway before and after the run. My only suggestion is to get someone at the local college to do a better T-Shirt design!

Good race

I enjoyed the race very much and I recommend it. The course is flat and extends along a scenic, lightly populated peninsula. I have run the Chicago marathon a few times, and this is a completely different event. I liked both and I can't say one is better; they are just different. While the big urban race has lots of runners and lots of fans, this race had a great small town feel to it. Logistics (e.g. packet pick up, parking, getting to the starting line, reuniting with my wife) were much easier than Chicago. As a runner, the course was easier to navigate because I didn't have to jockey for position at the start or at aid stations. Also, my wife was easily able to get to and see me at 5 or 6 spots along the course. The race entrance fee was cheap, although there was no expo and the goodies after the race were minimal. There weren't many fans, but it was cool and misting so that probably kept some fans away (although it made for ideal running conditions). But even if the weather were perfect, this is not a race that will attract a lot of fans. The fans that were out there were very supportive, of course, there just weren't too many of them. The aid stations were good and the miles clearly marked. Bring your own Gu or Power Gel because I didn't see any being handed out, but maybe I missed that. I ran my best time by several minutes at this race. I can't say how much the course has to do with that (who knows), but it is a good, fast course.

A very well-organized, runner-friendly event.

The 2001 event was my fifth marathon and without a doubt the most satisfying of all. The course was beautiful, as advertised. The terrific volunteers at well-staffed aid stations provided generous portions of ice-cold drinks (which is not always the case at larger marathons). Spectators were friendly and supportive, though limited in number due to the scenic layout of the course. If you feel the need to set a new PR this event is a wise choice. All in all the Bayshore was a well organized, fun-to-run marathon and I'd recommend it to anyone.

I ran in 2001 and PRed. The course is flat, and right along the bay--very beautiful. This is a small marathon with little crowd support unless you bring your own. The aid stations were well manned with cheerful volunteers. Weather in 2001 was great, lo 50s, drizzle. I'd recommend this race to anyone looking for a perfect course.

Spectacular Scenery ... Memorable Marathon

Hal Higdon summed it up well when he noted that the beauty of the Bayshore Marathon is 'a well-kept secret'. It shouldn't be that way much longer. An out-and-back, well-shaded, flat-as-a pancake course along the shores of West Grand Traverse Bay (not Lake Michigan as our friend from Atlanta notes in her/his comment), this is a PR course if there ever was one. Bayshore offers a runner-friendly event that is efficiently organized, with well-staffed aid stations, the '99 race offered an awesome t-shirt and classy medal, with a great start and finish on the campus of Northwestern Michigan College. Of the ten different marathons I've run during the past three years, this one remains #1 for course scenery and friendliness by organizers and runners. I hope to run Bayshore again!

All around wonderful low-key marathon!

Bayshore is a beautiful, scenic course that follows the Lake Michigan shoreline for the majority of the run (with forest, fields, and vacation homes on the opposing side.) First-timers and recreational marathoners will enjoy the ease of the course accompanied by the sights and the friendliness of spectators and volunteers. Those looking for a PR may be successful as the course is virtually flat and can be very fast. In addition, the race is well organized and set in a wonderful resort town in Northern Michigan on a Holiday weekend with plenty other activities to make the trip worthwhile. Bayshore does not have the hype of a big city mega-marathon but is every bit as satisfying and much more personal. I would recommend this marathon to everyone.
