Shuffle Off to Buffalo

I chose this race because there were good reviews and I had never visited the city. I also needed New York for my 50th state, and I prefer smaller races. I have to say, it was awesome. This marathon is one of the best organized and best supported runs I have done. As with most races, there are more half-marathoners, so the field thins at the 13 mile point. But the course has lots of spectators and support at every mile on the back half. Aid stations are very well stocked and staffed by many volunteers. While the day began cool in 2023, temperatures quickly rose. Late mile stations offered ice as well as sponges soaked in ice water, something that was extremely helpful to me! There were bike-mounted course marshals checking on runners too as the heat rose. Spectators were plentiful along the route, and volunteers were gracious. The announcers made a big deal about my 50th state as I crossed the finish line... not too long after, I also got to see a proposal at the finish line, so that was super exciting. Bottom line: great race, lovely city on Lake Erie, lots of fun things to do, and great people. Put this one on your list!

Definitely worth doing

A very well-run race on a fairly flat course. Absolutely worth doing if you want a mid-sized marathon in a decent town to visit. Crowd was thin this year but that was mostly due to covid.

Loved This Race!

I made a last minute decision to run this race to check NY off my list, and was pleasantly surprised with every aspect. Wonderful course with nice mix of urban, waterfront, & neighborhoods with fabulous architecture. Great expo, organized start/course, plentiful volunteers & aid stations and cool hoodie-shirt. I took a bus tour of the course the day before the race which was a delightful experience. I will recommend to EVERYONE!

A good time!

This is a good race. I've run a lot of marathons in a lot of places, and this is definitely above average. I prefer smaller races outside of urban centers, but Buffalo did a great job of hosting a large event that was well organized and enjoyable. From someone who has run a lot of marathons in lot of different states, here are my observations: * This isn't a perfectly flat course, but it's pretty easy. * Organization was really good. It definitely did not feel like a race with over 1,000 marathon finishers (not to mention all the halfers). * Good vibe from the crowd from start to finish. Lots of people cheering on runners throughout. * Buffalo isn't the most scenic of locales, but there were nice stretches through a park and along the waterfront that broke up the monotony of city neighborhoods. * Lots of aide stations and great volunteers staffing them. * One thing that Buffalo did that I've never seen before is they had volunteers at aide stations holding out paper plates with pads of petroleum jelly on them. A nice touch! * I love my medal and the long-sleeve, lightweight hoodie I received. They even gave finishers a bottle opener/key chain that matched the medal. * The Embassy Suites couldn't have been closer to the start, but man, I did not have a good stay there. Dirty room, poor service. Definitely overpriced. * I noticed the line at the expo was super long for half marathoners. It was probably only 3 or 4 people deep for the full, but I would have been super annoyed if I had to wait in the half line which was maybe 30 people deep. And I got there pretty early in the morning too to try to beat the crowds! * Post race food was disappointing. Water, fruit, and pretzels.

This race loves their runners!

A great race! The organizers have thought of everything and it is clear they love their runners. The free water, bananas, and energy bars (and indoor bathrooms) pre-start were so appreciated, as were the fireworks at the start. Beautiful views and architecture along most of the course. Lots of communication before the race and great race swag. Let's go Buffalo!

Needs a little fine-tuning

The website did not make mention (or if it did I could not find it) that the race was sold out. I feel sorry for anyone who may have shown up at the expo to register and been sent away The weather was nice this year, a little warm towards the end but much cooler than in 2016. Race day logistics and parking are super easy, with plenty of porta potties. The starting corrals are a bit crowded; if the pace per mile signs were spread out, it would alleviate that initial congestion. I was lined up about 60% of the way back, and could not hear any of the pre-race announcements and only the last few bars of the National Anthem. Fluid stations were plentiful and well managed, and were usually right at the mile markers, which is helpful. It would be even better if the aid stations were just past the mile marker, to allow us to hit the watch for that lap prior to slowing down for fluids. The course is flat but has quite a few twists and turns, so the extra distance you will inevitably run partially offsets the flatness. Good finish line area, and free beer after! A couple of the pace teams I was near at the staring line went out too fast, which kinda defeats their primary purpose. And please try to find another location for showers as you did in prior years, as it induces us out-of-towners to hang around after the race.

Run With the Buffaloes!

I was very impressed with the Buffalo Marathon. It's a solid mid size marathon with all the amenities of a big city race but without the crowds and wait times. Course is very fast. If you're in shape for a bq or pr you can do it here. I ran a bq time. Logistics are easy with lots of hotels and free street parking near the start/finish. I arrived an hour before start time and found a free street parking spot only three blocks from the start. It's a fairly scenic course too, with parks, neighborhoods and a beautiful lakefront stretch along Lake Erie. Enthusiastic crowd support for an event this size. Memorial Day weather is a crapshoot, but I like that they start the race at 6:30 to avoid mid day warmth. Temps were perfect this year, with low 50's at the start. Plenty of porta potties, gels and fluids on course. Free massages and nice post race party at the finish. Local brewery makes a special beer for the race, very cool! Volunteers were extremely helpful and friendly. You can tell the race management has worked hard and pays attention to detail. My only very minor recommendation for improvement would be to get rid of the 180 degree turnaround at Mile 26. I heartily recommend this race to anyone looking for a late spring/early summer race with a fast course and solid organization. Well done Buffalo and thank you!

Well done buffalo!

Great race. Very organized, good course, after party food in convention center was spot on. It is a small race with less spectators for the second half of the course (after the half marathoners exit) but those who were spectating were great. I especially appreciated the neighborhood sprinklers. My only 'con' would be the 3:50 pacer was WAY too fast.

Tremendous crowd support, superior organization

I have run many large and small marathons all over North America. This race is particularly meritorious given the top-notch organization and crowd support. Race day was a hot one, and instead of throwing up their arms and cancelling the race, the organizers e-mailed all participants a few days before, warning runners, in addition to ensuring that ice and sufficient water were available at many of the aid stations. Proving that they were ready for anything, they even still handed out heat sheets at the finish line. The clearly marked course through predominantly parks and residential areas treated participants to cheers from a never-ending stream of enthusiastic spectators and well-wishers, many of whom set up their sprinklers to keep us cool during the race. The flat course is amenable to PR times/Boston Qualifiers, as advertised on the website. Overall, this was a top-notch race experience that competes admirably and favourably with its bigger (but not necessarily better) siblings. I will definitely be back.

Amazing, growing,fun race

This marathon has really grown over just the past five years, and for good reason. Although mother nature didn't corporate with us this year, running Buffalo was a fun time. Pros: Flat as can be course. My garmin showed less than 100 feet min/mix elevation. Organization was the best of over the 20 marathons I've ran. Once we all knew the conditions would be hot and humid and that many of the runners, including myself were not acclimated (it snowed to weekends prior), the RD added many water stops, added ice cold towels and cups of ice to each stop and did everything they could to ensure our safety. Echoing the above, the entire community came out to support us. I had to have ran under 150-200 sprinklers on peoples lawns or hoses. We were all suffering out there but the community did all they could to guide us to the finish. 6:30 am start. I like this small change. No reason to let memorial day heat possibly become an issue, get er started early. Could park right at the start and finish for free and walk no more than five minutes. Hotels and everything you need is down there. Expo has grown in size with some good deals to actually be had. Pretty cool swag with the 1/4 zip longsleeve. Finisher march was Nike too. Buffalo bills handing out the medals. Pretty nice medal, I've definitely seen worse. Lots of food and chairs and tables to sit at right inside after the finish. Mile 27 beer, too. Cons Can't really dock this rave for the weather since the entire east coast was hot and humid. But just be aware that this is a later spring marathon. So you can definitely watch a warm day like this. Miles 17-22 kind of bake you with minimal shade. You do run up and down Delaware Ave three times, but it's a flat straight away so it's not that bad. Thank you, Buffalo Marathon. Here is to 55 and cloudy in 2017!

Beautiful course with tremendous support.

This is my second time running the Buffalo Marathon, I also ran in the 2013 edition. I didn't think it was possible but somehow the organizers improved an event that I felt was pretty awesome back in 2013. The 2016 race was run in very hot weather but that didn't stop me from enjoying the beautiful course and tremendous spectator and volunteer support. It was so hot that had it been a training run I would have called it quits after 15 miles. The course support was nearly perfect when it had to be and they all helped pull me thru to the finish. There was plenty of water and Gatorade and gels, ice, cold towels and much needed encouragement from spectators, volunteers, and Police & Fire personal who were working the course. I have run the NYC Marathon several times and the Mohawk Hudson River up in Albany once and in my opinion the Buffalo Marathon is New York States best Marathon. Most runners had to slow down this year due to extreme heat but in cooler weather that course is very favorable for the runner and should definitely produce fast times. The expo was very easy to navigate and not overcrowded. A great race shirt and finishers medal. Awesome hotels, bars and restaurants in downtown Buffalo. If you haven't run the Buffalo Marathon you should. I will be back again, hopefully next year.

Flat, Fast, Runner-Centric

Having just come off of a negative experience in Nashville, a friend and I decided to register for Buffalo 4 weeks out of race day. I contacted the race director who helped me take the place of a deferring runner (even got my name on the bib!). Expo was well-organized and well-attended. Starting line was easy to find with free close parking. Course itself was rather repetitive (there was one track we ran 3, maybe 4 times), but what was amazing was the community. It was such a hot day, and that can spell disaster for runners, but the race and the community came out HUGE: spectators had hoses out, the race put out extra carbs and water stops, each stop had gatorade, tons of stops had ice and wet washcloths, and there were multiple medical tents along the way. This race and the city cares about the marathon, and cares about the runners. We got emails all week about race day expectations, running the heat, and keeping ourselves safe. I was very impressed with the organization, support, and spectators. The only reason the course gets 4 stars is because of how much doubling around we had to do... and having to do 2 laps around an unshaded golf course was not pleasant. Highly recommend, perhaps one of my favorite races to date.

Thank You, Buffalo

On a warm day, the race organizers and the people of Buffalo were ready. Plenty of official aid stations most of which had ice and many kind neighbors with water, food, and hoses to cool us down. The pre-race communication was excellent and the organizers shared much helpful information. The expo and post race festivities at the Convention Center were well done. Anything that you could want was available post race including a specially brewed craft beer. A nice course through downtown, neighborhoods, and parks that was pretty flat. Excellent shirt and medal as well. A very good bargain. Visit Big Ditch Brewing Co for carbo loading before or to rehydrate after your run.

They kept us hydrdated

The 2016 race was warm, with 2nd half temps in the high 70s, partly sunny. The race organizers did an amazing job of ensuring plenty of fluids and ice. To the best of my recollection, there was an aid station every mile during the 2nd half of the race. Amazingly the last 6-8 miles each had a 2nd aid station just past the halfway point of each mile! The ice helped a lot, the volunteers were plentiful, and thanks to the homeowners on the course who were kind enough to set sprinklers. That's all I wanted to say - job well done.

A solid mid-sized marathon that feels like home

I ran the full marathon in 2012 and 2013, the 5K in 2014, and the half marathon in 2015. So I haven't run the back half of the newest course, but the changes since 2013 have been relatively minor. Pros: Organization is good and getting better. You can tell that the race directors are trying to build the race into something that can compete with big-city marathons. The expo has grown exponentially in recent years and includes an impressive roster of speakers and tons of vendors. The course is beautiful and very flat. It shows off all of Buffalo's best neighborhoods, parks, and architecture, including a very pretty stretch along the Niagara River. I've never had a problem with the aid stations, but I'll admit that I always carry my own GU. Parking is easy if you do your homework before the race. Crowd support is pretty good for such a small city - what we lack in numbers, we make up for in enthusiasm. Buffalo is known as the City of Good Neighbors, and that's definitely true on race day, from the screaming crowds along the major parkways to the people parked on lawn chairs in their driveway (beer in hand, possibly), you can tell that people here care about the marathon. Cons: Weather is a huge gamble. Memorial Day weekend in Buffalo tends to be hot, so it isn't unusual to see temperatures in the 70s or low 80s by the time late morning rolls around. There is some shade on the course, but a huge amount of Buffalo's trees were destroyed in a storm about a decade ago, so a large portion of the course is in full sun. Also, running the first half of the race with the half marathoners is depressing, because they outnumber the full marathoners by at least 5:1. It's demoralizing to hear 'You're almost there!' at Mile 12 of a marathon, and to get incredibly close to the finish line only to turn off for another 13.1 miles. It also gets pretty spread out once all those half marathoners finish, and the crowd support gets a little lean for some long stretches. And yes, the little out-and-back with a hairpin turn just before the finish is incredibly cruel, but at that point, you are SO close, so you just have to grit your teeth and keep going. ALSO, as a local, I want to clear up a couple things that I've seen in the comments... First, the course is not long. It's very common for your watch to measure a few tenths longer than 26.2 miles, because very few people run perfect tangents. I'd be concerned about a short course if I measured exactly 26.2 miles on my GPS watch. Second, yes, most of our highways are 55 mph. Pay attention to the signs. If you get pulled over going almost 20 mph over the speed limit, then of course you're going to get a ticket. As a Buffalo resident, I'm happy that our speed limits are occasionally enforced, because most of our highways are not designed for a 65 or 70 mph speed limit. Third, parking. METERED parking is free on weekends. That means street parking anywhere you see a parking meter. The lots run by Allpro or Pay2Park or whoever they are will NOT be free. In fact, they often jack up the price to $15 or $20 to take advantage of the marathon runners. I would advise people to arrive about an hour, hour-and-a-half early and look for a spot on a side street. You can scope out good spots on Google Maps, or you can hop in your car the day and do a bit of exploring the day before the race. Driving around Buffalo is incredibly easy - the downtown core is small and relatively free of traffic outside of rush hour, and the surrounding neighborhoods are generally easy to navigate as well. You can scope out a parking spot, drive the course, and be on your way to the pre-race pasta dinner within the hour.

Great race!

Overall I believe that the The Buffalo Marathon was a great experience. Weather was perfect and the spectators were awesome. The only thing that I would recommend moving forward is that the marathon pacers be a bit more consistent. I went out with one of the pacers and the first mile (which was slightly uphill) was a 15 second negative split, and very inconsistent from there. For us marathoners, consistency is everything. I understand having to pace the half marathoners as well, but when the group is made up of mostly marathoners its not smart to bank. Most of the marathoners ( Including myself) had a hard time picking it up in the later miles. Other than that, I will definitely be back!

Enjoyable Marathon

First time running Buffalo. Stayed at the Hyatt the race hotel, which was a short walk to the expo and start. So everything was right there and very convenient. I took the valet's advice and parked in the parking garage catty-corner from the hotel for $5. Saved about $20 by doing that. Skipped the pasta dinner and got take-out from Osteria 166 which is right at the start on Franklin. Got a house salad, bread, and spaghetti for $12. Salad was great, spaghetti was pretty good, bread was ok. Filled me up and I'd eat there again. Got to the starting area about 20 minutes prior and had no problem getting into a port-o-john, waited maybe 2 minutes. Tried to make my way up front to the 3:10 pace group, but stopped at about the 4:30 pace group as it was too crowded. Didn't really care at the time as all the other 27 marathons I've done post age group results based upon chip time, not gun time. Weird that Buffalo places by gun time, especially since they don't have starting corrals based upon projected finishing time. There were what seemed like several timing pads on the course, but the results don't show any splits so not sure what's up with that. Mostly flat course with some elevation, but nothing significant. A bit warmer than I would have liked (mid 50s at the start). Course got kind of congested on the paved paths in the park, but really opened up after the halfers finished. Volunteers and spectators were great and enthusiastic. They make all the difference. I could use a lot less cow bell though. Does anyone like cow bells? Didn't have a great running day but easily BQ'd. Finished at about 10:20, ate a couple of oranges, walked straight to the Hyatt, showered, packed, checked out, walked to my car and was on I-90 heading west by 10:55 even with road closures, so everything is centrally located and very convenient if you stay at the Hyatt. I enjoyed the experience. Would recommend this marathon, and glad I did it. Pros: Flat course, expo well organized, centralized location, plenty of port-o-johns at the start, enthusiastic volunteers and spectators Cons: No corrals, start congested, crummy results format, results based upon gun time, congestion on paved paths

Course too long???

I am wondering... since I read comments from other years... and taking into account that apparently the course was modified... as I reached the McKinley obelisc - where it seems other years marathons ended there - my Garmin showed 26.2 miles. At the end my Garmin showed 26.6 miles. That is a significant difference and talking to other runners they had similar readings. I am talking of at least 2 minutes. Anybody out there can corroborate? ¨Please comment'. Other than that the race was spectacular and very friendly.

All around wonderful race!

This was my second time running the Buffalo marathon and it did not disappoint. An overnight stomach bug left me dehydrated but the wonderful support, great course, and fantastic weather got me through this one. Thirty minutes from Niagara Falls only adds to the appeal of this race. We're already planning a return next year!

A great race! but it sucked if you got tickets ...

The course is pretty easy with some scenic landscapes - actually very nice. Organization was pretty good too if not the top. The after-race food and beer is among the best - unlimited beer and pizza! Cannot complain about that! Overall I think the race team did a fantastic job. It is definitely one of the best races I want to come back ...... only if I hadn't had the worst experience in my life with the cops in Buffalo! I had my first speeding ticket in my life by this freaking cop who wouldn't show any leniency or compassion! Plus another parking ticket during race day! A double punch for coming to a marathon! The speeding ticket was because I didn't see the speed limit (honestly) in the dark after I came into Buffalo from Canada. It was my first time in Buffalo, and as soon as I entered Buffalo from Canada, I thought I could drive a bit faster at the normal speed as in Michigan (which is 70mph for freeways) without realizing Buffalo's speed limit for freeway is only 55mph. When I was stopped by the freaking cop, I didn't know why he stopped me. He told me I was driving at 74mph. I explained it was my first time here, and hoped he would give me some leniency. But no! The freaking cop just issued the ticket! Now I have to plead guilty because there is no way I'd drive 5 hours to go to the court in Buffalo for a hearing! To tell you the truth, I was caught for speeding 4 or 5 times in my life time (all out of state), but no officers issued a ticket to me. They would only give me a warning and let me go (I thought in all cases the cops realized my out-of-state driver license and didn't want me to go through the trouble, which I appreciated very much). But this guy was terrible! I came to Buffalo for the first to run a marathon, for god's sake! That was Friday night, May 22, 2015. Then on the race Sunday, May 24, 2015, I came early to a parking lot (suggested by the race), and asked the other two drivers who were already there (also runners) whether it was OK to park there. They all said OK. But when I came back after my full marathon around noon, there was this freaking parking ticket on my windshield (good it was only $12)! I believe the freaking owner of the parking lot - Allpro Parking just wanted to take advantage of some uninformed runners. We were told in the expo that all metered parking was free during weekend, and that parking lot is a metered lot. If they wanted to collect money, they should have staffed the freaking parking lot, knowing that a lot of runners were going to park there. These people should be shamed for taking advantage of the runners! Oh well, no complaint about the race, only about that freaking cop and the parking owner! I guess my relationship with Buffalo is dead forever! Too bad it was a bad ending!!

Highs and Lows

This was my first Buffalo marathon and there were many highs and some lows. When I add them all up, the biggest 'low' outweighs the biggest 'high'. I realize the race management had recently suffered two tragic losses, so I keep those in mind here. First the highs - Buffalo is a very friendly city. People were nice all around and the expo was no exception. Bib pick up was a breeze and most of my course questions were answered by volunteers. The half / full ran together but it was not too crowded (yet both sold out). Awesome technical shirt that integrated a classy recognition of the two individuals that had recently passed away. I liked that splits were recorded every 5K. Lots of water stops/ friendly volunteers. Relay exchange areas were not congested. The start also had a wonderful color guard presentation and live National Anthem, plus a moment of silence (again for the two individuals that had recently passed). Course elevation was as advertised. Starting temps in the low 50s. Good crowd control by police and volunteers. Parking was not a big deal, although two large surface lots (Chippewa and Washington Streets) were surprisingly closed on race day. I stayed across from the airport and drove about 15 minutes (on 33 West) to reach the starting area on race morning. Super easy and much cheaper than staying downtown. Plenty of porta potties. Now the lows - the start was a bit anti-climatic - an air horn blown by a Buffalo Bills player (sorry - no idea who he was) and a bit of confetti. The emcee seemed to be winging it before the start. Pacers were not really spread out that much in the corral so it was not easy to find your spot in the beginning. The U-turn at mile 26 was also a bit annoying. However - by far - the biggest problem with this race is how miles are marked (or not marked). The mile markers were not always on the same side of the road, they were not uniform in size or color (some white, some yellow) and they were not nearly big enough (maybe 2.5 feet tall). I missed the first two and really struggled to find the others, which was a huge distraction for me. I am not even sure all miles were marked. Not knowing where I was on the course really threw me off and my time suffered badly because although I knew my time I didn't always know where I was. The race needs to invest in proper (tall) markers for each mile. Sorry, Buffalo, but I won't be back.

Beautifully Executed Marathon (2015)

Buffalo Marathon 2015 has to be one of the most enjoyable marathons I've done and this one was #208 for me. The EXPO was extremely entertaining ending with a fabulous pasta dinner on the same site. The entire marathon course was supported by jubilant viewers, the course was very well marked, the intersections were very well controlled by the volunteers and on-duty police, aid stations were in abundance and the timers at the finish line were in no hurry to shut down. Great organizational skills were very prevalent.

Small, quiet event, full of heart and enthusiasm.

I ran this race after running the Pittsburgh Marathon 4 years in a row. Based on that experience, I was disappointed by how meager the event amenities seemed; however, what they lose in size they make up for in enthusiasm. The organizers, volunteers, and spectators are all entirely focused on making sure the runners enjoy their experience. They are friendly and helpful. Pros: They say your name as you cross the finish line and someone puts your medal on your neck. Street parking on race day is convenient and free. (We only arrived 1 hour before the race started.) The course is flat, flat, flat! The medal itself is a neat design and well-made. The design on the t-shirt is cool. Cons: The course in my opinion is mentally exhausting. You run on one street 3 times, two other streets two times, through the same park twice, and the last .2 miles involve looping around a monument and then an out-and-back of 1/2 a city block before swinging around the monument again and making a turn to the finish line. (One runner was crying and saying 'I don't see it. I don't see it.' I didn't break down that much, but it was exactly how I felt.) Course support was also a little lackluster. They had the water before the gatorade at every station. Gels were only offered at 15 and 19. Vaseline was supposed to be at 10, 15, and 19, but when I asked for it at 10 I was told I would have to stop and wait because he had to get it from his car (what?!?). Luckily, 15 had their stuff together and I got it there, but again they handed me a giant jar of Vaseline that I had to run with as I applied it and then hand the jar back to them. While doing so I was unable to grab water or gatorade and ended up not hydrating again until the next station. No SWAG in the goodie bag. Unisex shirts (we all know unisex means cut for dudes, right?). I definitely wouldn't tell you to skip this marathon. It's an experience for sure and not a terrible one. Just go into it knowing that it's a smallish race on a 'pretty' but not 'exciting' course. I'd probably recommend you shell out the few dollars for the bus tour of the course they offer the day before. I didn't take it, but wish I had so I could have mentally prepared myself for the monotony.

Absolutely Amazing Race

Fantastic race! The spectators and fans made this race the best race I have ever run. Literally fans along every single part of the course. The water stops were plenty and had gatorade at every stop. The volunteers were friendly and enthusiastic. The course was almost completely flat and very scenic. I lived in the Buffalo area my entire life and experienced a part of Buffalo that made me fall in love all over again during this race. Running along the waterfront of Lake Erie was fantastic, so much so that I was tempted to stop and take pictures. The organization of the expo, etc. was very well done. The post-race refreshments were good - beer, pizza, and nutritional things such as bananas, bagels, etc. I didn't attend the pre-race pasta dinner but heard great things about it from others that did attend it. I will definitely be making this a yearly race, as I cannot say enough good things about it. This is my favorite all time race and recommend it to anyone looking for a flat course with a great overall experience.

Great May Race!

My husband and I planned a vacation from Florida around the Buffalo Marathon. We had a wonderful time. He ran the half and I ran the full. I just loved running through Buffalo. The architecture is so much nicer than Orlando's. Forest Lawn Cemetery was beautiful to run past. When we met up at the end we compared notes on what we saw. We both finished with a PR and enjoyed a great post race party.

A First Class Event

Everything about this marathon is first class. The expo, packet pickup, social media, the pre-race communications, the shirt, and most importantly, the course. The course for 2014 was altered to avoid ongoing construction. The result is a fast, PR worthy course. The hills and steel grate bridge have been replaced with long stretches of straightaways and minimal turns, meaning you can actually run the tangents on this course.

TOTALLY AWESOME MARATHON

This marathon is about as perfect of a marathon as you can get in a big city. The course had several sections of the city and everyone was absolutely beautiful. From the parks to the zoo to the lake side to the old architecture downtown to the beautiful green neighborhoods this marathon can't be beat. The only complaint that someone could say was there was some potholes on the roads but with the city getting around 100 inches of snow that is understandable. The volunteers at the aid stations were totally awesome. Aid stations were every 2 miles and some seemed even closer. The spectators out on the course were plentiful for the first half and were loud. The second half was less people but picked up as we got closer to downtown. And downtown was awesome coming into the home stretch. The post-race food included cold beer and cold pizza. The pizza was probably hot for the half marathoners but was cold if you came in after 4 hours. No big deal but it would have been nice hot. Plenty of fruit, soda, water, etc. I didnt see any chocolate milk which I love after the marathon. The race shirt was a black with white stripes down the side. Nice. Medal was nice but small with a buffalo on it. Very appropriate for this city! The packet pickup was downtown at the convention center and was easy to find. Expo was small but you could find everything you needed. They also had a free pasta dinner which was really good. All you could eat pasta, beer, bread, and salad. Some suggestions for runners of future Buffalo Marathon Runners and Race director: I stayed at the Red Roof Inn at the airport for 3 days for the price of one night downtown. It was 12 miles to downtown and easy to drive Stay an extra day or two to go to Niagara Falls and or Toronto. Provide some chocolate milk for the few non beer drinkers. Have the city fill in the potholes on the streets. In summary, as I am now over 1/4 through the 50 State quest, I am glad I ran I got shut out of NYC and picked Buffalo for my New York Marathon.

Pleasant surprise

I was looking for a late-spring, BQ attempt within driving distance to my home in NE Ohio. Buffalo may not be a glamorous destination, but the race and city were awesome. The course was so beautiful and diverse. The crowds weren't huge, but the enthusiasm was apparent. Staying at one of the downtown hotels made logistics so convenient. Minor rolling hills were sprinkled throughout, but were not tough. And yes, I did BQ!

Two Thumbs up for Buffalo

This was a well put together race. The expo was very spacious and easy to maneuver to pick up our packets. Parking was free for the expo and only $5 for race day. Both days were very easy logistically. We attended the free Carb Load Party the night before and it was wonderful. Wasnt sure what to expect, but was very happy we went. Weather for the start was a perfect 53 degrees, though you cannot give credit to the RD for weather. I think the temperature only got up to about 60-65 degrees by the finish which is the ideal marathon weather in my mind. Getting into the corrals is one of only two cons of this race in my opinion. Everyone was required to enter through the back and were not allowed to walk the sidewalks to enter the proper corral. We were stuck at the 5:30 hour pace group and would not have been able to get to the appropriate group had we not jumped the barricade fence. Please fix this for next year as it was a mess. The start through mile 6 was very congested, but that did not bother me too much as you can expect congestion at the start of a race. Course was phenomenal! Very fair and was beautiful throughout. The course never seemed to go through a visually poor stretch. The finish area was excellent as you eyed the finish line with a couple hundred yards to go. This seemed like a great course to PR (it just wasnt my day). The course provided tons of support pretty much the whole way with plenty of food and water/Gatorade at all stops. My second and final negative was the medal&very small. The design was cool enough, but in my mind needed to be bigger to be considered a good medal. Tech shirt is the nicest I have received in my 10 total races. Overall, great job Buffalo Marathon! By far my favorite marathon (out of 4) I have run.

Very Scenic Course

A very scenic course through beautiful neighborhoods, nice parks, lakeside roads and a very cool finish downtown. Course was generally flat with a few gentle hills. A great staging area in the convention center with indoor plumbing and chairs! It was very welcoming before, and especially, after the race. Perfect running weather, but a little cool before and afterward. This race was quite a value at $70, including a really good shirt and medal and free pre-race meal. On- course support was more than adaquate, with good community support. My only complaint is the difficulty I had getting into the very congested starting area from the back of the corral. It made it quite a challange to get near my pacer. Maybe next year have a few different openings into the starting area. A really good experience through a very nice smaller city.

Awesome

My girlfriend ran this marathon and it was fantastic. I jumped in and did the second half with her. I was completely blown away. I did Boston a month ago and although it didn't have the 'specialness' of Boston it was a vastly easier/more pleasant experience. We stayed at the Hyatt (really nice) which was 200 yards from the finish and start. It cost about 60% what our hotel cost for Boston, which took us two hours to get to after the race. Course was great/fast, volunteers were friendly, post-race/awesome. Good fans. Expo was great. Bart Yasso gave an amusing talk. Free beer and pizza!! Complete home run.

Ok marathon

I thought there were a number of positives and a number of negatives with this marathon. Let me start with the positives... 1. Very easy to get to the start and parking was no problem which made getting out of the area after the race much easier 2. Nice marathon shirt 3. Flat course - I felt as if I was going downhill much more than uphill 4. Adequate number of water/Gatorade stations as well as vasoline, gel stations, fruit, etc. And now for the negatives... 1. I thought the organization was a little spotty. I had to pick up my number on Sunday morning before the race and all I received was my number and shirt - no goody bag? My friend actually asked one of the volunteers for a shirt and she gave him one! I didn't feel that there was adequate leadership directing us around near the start and finish 2. Medals - seemed a bit cheap looking and small. Not like the one on the website. 3. pacer - I started the race with the 3:50 pacer and was going along well with him but then he switched with another guy about halfway and the new guy was going much too fast. 4. A little too crowded for the first half of the race until the half marathoners finished. There were a few points where the course really bottlenecked. The second half was much lighter crowds. Almost too light. Felt like most people only ran the half. Overall I was happy with race and I would run it again. I guess I'm more used to running bigger races and might need to change my expectations when dealing with a smaller race. If you are looking for a small city race with a nice scenic flat course this is nice race for you.

Warning: Roads are terrible

Warning: roads are terrible. Potholes, large cracks, chucks of asphalt missing. Have to pay a lot of attention to the streets. The mile markers were displayed at ground level and are easy to miss. Only a couple clocks on course. It's flat. But there is no way I would do this race again. Post race refuel line was the worst I've ever seen for a race this size. Just had water, bananas, and a pretzel bag. My recommendation: find any other race if you are looking for a New York marathon.

Great Marathon for a PR

I have run this marathon 3 times. The course is awesome! Its relatively flat and fast-paced. Miles 16-22 are a little boring but the last couple miles are great! I'm definitely going to run this again

Thank you Buffalo!

I was so lucky to get to run in this race. I was originally going to run the Madison Marathon that day, but because of the heat, it got cancelled. Since I was able to register at the expo, I decided to travel to Buffalo to do this marathon instead and I was so lucky to get in and run it last minute! The course was beautiful at some points (such as along the lake and in some residential areas), but I didn't enjoy running next to a factory or in the park. I could have used more crowd support throughout the last half of the race because I got quite lonely at times. I am so thankful that I was able to run this race at the last minute. Thank you Buffalo!

Love the course!

After running 3 big city marathons (NYC, Philly, Nike Women's San Fran) I wasn't sure what to expect from a smaller marathon. My expectations were vastly exceeded by Buffalo! I loved the free pasta dinner (free for runners, only $5 for anyone else), especially the free beer! The course really is flat and fast...and scenic! Great views from the shores of Lake Erie and the park we run through in the 2nd half was lovely. Also terrific volunteers on course, handing out not only water and Gatorade, but fruit, gels, Vaseline and therma-freeze! The final element that I appreciated about this marathon is the ease of staying at the Hyatt (which gives a great runners discount and serves a delicious breakfast!) I walked right out the front door 15 min prior to the start and was in back in the room, in the shower within 20 min after finishing! My ONLY complaint was music was being played at ridiculously high decibels at post race party/awards ceremony. I would have immediately exited, but sat around waiting for my award while none of my family members could even talk to each other! Otherwise, awesome marathon...I highly recommend and would love to come back!

At least you can find good wings...

Expo - an upgrade from the single hotel room expo in 2008 but still falls very short of expectations for a 'big' city marathon... the second most populus metroplis in NY Course - features some of the tourists sites of downtown, but running on open roads, a bike path, and an open access area in Deleware park are huge dissappointments Medal - leaves quit a bit to be desired, as a runner who runs for medals and experience rather than running for BQ times, i was disappointed Spectators - other than the group that traveled with me, the others seemed like stereotypical new yorkers (rude and put out that you were holding up traffic while running in their city) Post Race Party - THE ONLY BRIGHT SPOT...plenty of pizza and free beer, a perfect way to celebrate a PR (which i did set in spite of my complaints and no thanks to the pace team)

Pleasantly surprised - great organization

In looking to put in a serious effort, I was pleasantly surprised after entering at last moment - another marathon cancelled. I didn't need to be overwhelmed by numbers of runners, spectators, or organizational requirements, but wanted to feel part of something. I felt was very well organized, and volunteer support far exceeded expectations (drink stations far more frequent than advertised). Did not notice hills, other than few short overpasses. Relaxing scenery without being spectacular. Breeze was annoying but limited to one direction by lake; otherwise sheltered. Was usually able to find a small group to run with, but it might have been lonely for backmarkers. Sufficient spectators, both in masses and small groups. Easy pickup, but Buffalo expo competes with larger nearby marathons in Ottawa (soldout) and Burlington (hills) on same day. Some may prefer different starts for marathon and half, but inevitably slow participants impede faster runners in the other, and combined fields provided early atmosphere for the relatively small marathon field (not big enough to cause real traffic). Buffalo easily accessed by travellers, although absolutely NOTHING available downtown outside of hotels. A valid option for a pleasant marathon and fast time.

Scenic Well Organized Race

COURSE - This was a special race for me since it was in my hometown that I moved from 30 years ago. I really enjoyed the course layout. The first half primarily encompasses the abundant waterfront area with great views of the mouth of the Niagara River and Lake Erie. I've seen some grumblings in past reviews about the industrial area but it is over so fast, its not even an issue. The steel grated bridge is uncomfortable to run on but like most of my fellow runners, I ran on the adjacent concrete walkway. Careful on that though since it is somewhat uneven. The second half of the race goes through some of the nicest neighborhoods and parks you will ever want to run through. Most of the streets are wide avenues with stately homes. ORGANIZATION - I didn't go to the expo since someone picked up my packet but my niece had to make a change in the morning before the race and it was done quickly at the registration booth. Volunteers seemed to be plentiful, prepared, and friendly all around. I've seen some negative comments about the organization from a couple of years ago. From my perspective, they have taken it all to heart. One thing that didn't affect me but should be resolved is the lack of a bag drop this year due to security concerns. Having said that, there is plenty of parking around the race and most people can get to their vehicles about as fast as they could retrieve a bag. SPECTATORS - I found the spectators to be well represented and enthusiastic. There were groups of 20-somethings at a couple of places that were especially vocal and supportive. Kudos to the folks that came out and supported the race! ETC - While I like the course and race, it was not exactly 'flat' as advertised since it had 3 or 4 long ascents and a fairly steep bridge that we had to cross twice. The temp was ideal (mid-40s to 50s) but the cold steady wind of 10-15mph in many places was challenging. Obviously not a race controlled event but worth mentioning. I would recommend running this race. It is small enough to not feel the crush of crowds and big enough to feel like you're part of something special.

Excellent fast marathon course.

I grew up in the Queen City but had to leave in 1999 to find work. I always wanted to come back and run in the Buffalo Marathon. I am so very happy I made it back this year. I had a great marathon experience. Prior to Buffalo I ran New York in 2010 and 2011 and ran Philadelphia in 2012. I heard and read many negative comments prior to running the 2013 Buffalo marathon. Negative comments about the crowds being small and that the course support was weak. I found the exact opposite to be true. I was shocked at the amount of support on the course and the number of spectators. Obviously the crowds of spectators were not as huge as New York or Philly but I thought it was a very good number of spectators. I'm sure the number of spectators was boosted by having the half marathon and relay running with the marathon but nevertheless it was great. I really did not expect so much support or spectators for a marathon with only 1,200 runners. Plenty of water stops, gatorade, gel, fruit, water bottles. Just fantastic. It all helped to make a very enjoyable and safe run. The spectators were very encouraging and I thought there was a very strong Police presence between the Buffalo Police, Eric County Sheriffs and State Police. I was trying to qualify for Boston and wanted a fast course. If you want a fast course this is it, super fast and flat course. Got my qualifying time and a PR. Besides the course being fast it is very beautiful, especially along the water front and downtown Buffalo and in North Buffalo near Delaware Park and the Art Gallery. Yes, the steel bridge at around mile 7 and mile 12 is not too much fun. The course orgainzers may want to consider laying down some kind of carpet on that bridge in the future. Another criticism I have is that I really thought the finishers medal was kind of cheap for a marathon. The race shirt was nice and the expo was easy in and easy out. Overall I would say the Buffalo Marathon is a very well organized and worthwhile event. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fast course with good support in a great City. Thank you Buffalo Marathon organizers, officials, volunteers and Police/Fire/Ems. You did a great job. I will defintely run Buffalo again.

RUN THIS RACE

My first race since Boston. if their was ever a thought of being unsafe it left my mind the second I walked out of the hotel. An amazing job with security. A big thanks to Greg for taking time out of his busy day at the finish line to help me propose to my now fiancé. Helping to make sure she was where I needed her to be in the middle of a race of 6000 says it all. I live 700 hundred miles away and it turned out like him and I rehearsed it 20 times. If your looking for a NY state on your fifty state quest or just to run a beautiful well put on race, than RUN THIS RACE!!!

Overall good first experience.

1) I would prefer to see separate starts for the Marathon and Half Marathon (say 15-30mins later). It was rather congested at the start (partly due to new security issues) but also just because of numbers. Mile four had a narrow path going from one road section to another where people could only run 4-5 across. This was a real bottle neck with so many runners. Separate starts would be helpful for the marathoners in terms of building support amongst themselves and sticking with pace groups. I had no idea how alone I was till the Halfers finished and I continued on seemingly by myself (No, I was not last just stuck in the back of the starting gate). 2) Better course markings are needed after the 1st half. Some 'flaggers' were very lazy with their pointing. Cones alone, can be ambiguous. All cones/curves/turns should also have an arrow sign. Note that the lead female runner missed a turn near the end of her run so, I don't think I am alone in this. 3) First timers should get a special arm band/shirt/ribbon or some such thing. It makes them feel special and helps fans to cheer a bit more. 4) The medal this year was gold in color. Last time I checked, a nickel was silver in color. The medals shown on the marathon site are silver and look much nicer than the bright/shiny gold ones we got this year. Go back to silver nickels!

Hits the highlights of Buffalo

Many years ago I lived in Buffalo for 6 months and I was looking forward to returning and seeing the city. The course did a very good job of hitting the highlights of the city from the waterfront to the hockey rink to the industrial section to the parks and the nicer neighborhoods of the city. The post race celebration was good with pizza, pretzels, beer, fruit, cookies, water and soda. There was plenty of on-street free parking and the coarse was fairly flat. Those are the good points of the race. And I have to give kudos to any marathon than offers more than lemon-lime gatorade. Delaware offers orange and Buffalo offers cherry flavor. I would say that of my 15 marathons, this was the worst expo and the smallest (not including the mississippi coast marathon that had 72 runners). With nearly 6000 runners, the expo should have been much larger. There was no gear being sold with the race logo. There were very few vendors. The convention center only had one bathroom for each gender and the male's bathroom was being cleaned when I visited. The speakers room was difficult to find and the volunteers were not sufficiently trained. The organizer needs to visit a few other marathon expos (nobody beats the Detroit Expo) to get ideas to greatly improve the initial experience for the runner. There was good spectator support for the first half of the marathon but greatly tapered for the 2nd half of the race.

Not bad, could use improvement

Not bad at all for those looking to knock out a New York marathon. The mile markers are unidentifiable for the first half due to their size and the number of runners and I'm sure that buffalo has a better 26 miles to showcase than most of what we saw. Organization was good, expo was fine but nothing spectacular.

Nice course, great race!

I thoroughly enjoyed everything associated with this race - easy packet pickup, the delicious pasta meal (free to runners) at St Anthony's, the great running weather, and most of all the scenic, mostly flat course. Buffalo, you did a great job! Everything was well organized, the people were friendly, the city was clean. The Saturday tour of the course by open air bus was great (even if the weather was a bit cool!). I visited Niagara Falls after the race (20 minutes away). If I can get another cheap flight from Atlanta next year I'll be back!

Great race all around

This was my 7th Marathon and my 1st Buffalo Marathon. Entered it at the last minute and was not disappointed. The course was as advertised mostly flat, scenic and the few hills made it interesting. The last 2km are mostly downhill making for a nice finish. I was finally able to meet my Boston qualifying time so I am very pleased with the course, the organization and the tremendous volounteers. Stayed at the Comfort Suites located 300meters from the start line made for easy access to the start line and finish line. All in all a great race. Would definitely do it again. Small field makes for a comfortable running experience.

Fast Course - Ideal for a BQ

This was advertised as a fast Boston qualifier. This did not disappoint. There were a couple of hills per the elevation map and I didn't notice them at all. I would call them speed bumps. The weather was perfect and this race ended up being a PR for me just six weeks after running Boston. Great crowd support, but the latter miles in the park can be a little sparse. If you are looking for a late spring marathon with a good chance of good weather, this is the one. There are also lots of reasonable hotels within 5 minutes of the start and finish line. That was a big plus. Go run this race!

Better than I anticipated

Signed up for the marathon to cross NY off my list. Glad I did. Nice course. I knocked 16 minutes off my Philadelphia time in November. I ran with a pace group-4:30- and she was very helpful. She kept our pace where it should be. A friend ran with a faster pace group and did not have such luck. Her pacer was running too fast for the specific pace time. The spectators and volunteers were cheerful and encouraging. My only disappointment was that the expo didn't sell any clothing with the marathon logo and year on it. I always buy a sweatshirt or jacket at the expos.

great first time!

This was my first half marathon and i will run this again next year. Great small, well organized race. Beautiful first 7 miles along the waterfront. Two negatives: 1. the new course this year avoiding the train stop? Hated it! Terrible, long out and back with an overpass and a steel bridge that was painful to run over. this long ugly, stretch was demoralizing, and i think cost me a few minutes. 2. DO NOT use their pacers. Every year there are a lot of complaints about the pacers, and every year this marathon does not correct the problem. Just don't have them!! The pacer I lined up with? Took off like a bat out of hell, never to be seen from again. And I ran faster than I had planned!! All the pacers run way too fast, with a tiny sign. No flag, balloons or anything. Overall, great first-time experience. The training shirt they give for sigining up early? A nice plus. traffic was light, parking was plentiful, and I used a nice bathroom in the convention center at the start. Weather was great, people nice. Run this marathon!

Excellent small town marathon on a flat course

I picked this race for ease of travel, schedule and a flat course. Highly recommend this well organized small town event on a flat course! COURSE: The course is as promised quite flat. It had two (not very steep) inclines along the overpass (go over it twice) around mile 8 and mile 10, but otherwise the inclines were barely noticeable, and the last mile has a slight downhill, with the finish just around the corner from the fountain square. This year's course eliminated the railroad crossing from the first half and replaced it with a nice out-and-back portion along the lake. The first half ran mostly along the lake and had lots of spectators and some bands playing. The second half ran through a park and some nice residential neighborhoods. Fewer spectators along the second half, but on the upside the course was finally clear of shoulder-to-shoulder traffic and was much less crowded with runners. The second half still had plenty of volunteers. Lots of spectators in the park and quite a few cheering residents out on the streets in the last eight miles. ORGANIZATION: Outstanding. Does not feel like a small-town race in any way. Day-of pickup was smooth, with no lines. There were restrooms at the convention center (usual race-day lines though), not just port-a-potties. The expo was held the day before, but it was over early in the day, so I didn't go. The course was very well staffed with helpful volunteers and offered water and energy drinks every two miles, fruit at the half-way mark and later on, as well as two gel stops. The course had several sprinkler stations. Excellent traffic control by road marshals and Buffalo police throughout. There were pacers for the full and half at 10min intervals. Some commented pacers deviated a bit from goal times, but I couldn't tell - maybe later in the race; for the first several miles that I followed the pacer, he was exactly on target. WEATHER: The weather, which was a big concern, ended up being cooler than anticipated, at least until about nine, when it got warm and humid. With an increasing number of May races (not just Buffalo, many in the NE/Midwest) running into hot weather problems, if I could change one thing about the race, it would be to move it to an earlier date, ideally in April or in early May. When picking next spring's race, I might go with an earlier one just because with late May weather there is always a good chance it will be hot. GOODIES: The red-and-white tech shirt and medal are nice. Official photos were available - a little on the pricey side but worth it. VISIT: An event rate was offered at the Hyatt, which is located right near the start line. Nearby hotels were no-frills but served the purpose. The downtown neighborhood is not particularly tourist-friendly and can get pretty empty on a Saturday, but that's true about most upstate cities, and I was just there for the race anyway. If time permits, it is definitely worth combining the trip with a visit to Niagara Falls.

Good way to see waterfront, but notmuch fansupport

This was my second marathon to run. The race itself was really nice (flat, gorgeous views of waterfront and neat sites that you can't see elsewhere in the country), but that was just the first half (13.1). The second went into neighborhoods and major roads that could be seen anywhere in the North East. House owners were out gardening and not paying attention to runners (versus other races where the whole neighborhood comes out to socialize and party) and the second half wasn't very spectator friendly. Like, it was difficult for my fiancee to get near the course, so I imagine it was for others, too. Finish was great and there were lots of water stops, but not enough portajohns. Lots of people stopping in bushes or McDonald's bathrooms.

Awesome event but 4:20 pacer stunk

This event continues to improve. Beth from Facebook answered questions daily. Only negative for me was 4:20 pacer. she went out way to quick. When questioned she said that she wanted to bank some time. Really? Thats not your job, your job is to run even mile splits. I blame the pace leader for not properly instructing the pacers in proper strategy.

This race just keeps getting better and better!

I grew up in Buffalo; this was my second year returning to the city to run the half marathon. I am very impressed with this race! From the enthusiastic spectators to the very nice volunteers to the improved course, this is a great race to run! It is also reasonably priced, unlike most Rock N Roll races and mega-marathons. The long out and back at around mile 7 or 8 was a bit demoralizing, but otherwise a great experience!

Fun Course, Great Fans, Well Organized

I ran the 1/2 marathon and really enjoyed it. The course was generally flat with some great views of the lake. The city of Buffalo is experiencing a renaissance and has some really beautiful architecture. I think this marathon is becoming more popular each year and the organizers deserve a pat on the back. I am hoping to run the full marathon next year.

Awesome marathon. Will be back!

Great marathon! The course was very nice and well staffed. There was plenty of water and gatorade on course as well as fuel such as GU and Bananas. The medal is very nice but the swag bag was terrible. There was nothing in it other than a 1 ounce jar of jelly and some advertisements. I run for the course though and will be back next year. Loved the Buffalo marathon.

thoughtfully directeded small town race

This is a small marathon run concurrently with a relay and the half. They add nice touches like a 'Training for the Buffalo Marathon' shirt for early registrants. The director answers e-mails promptly for those with questions. The course has many scenic portions along Lake Erie and through beautiful neighborhoods and parks. Of course, there are unattractive portions, but that is true of most urban courses. There are some LONG gradual hills in the second half. Enthusiastic spectators, but not as many as a mega-marathon. I really liked the ice baths at the finish line. If you like a smallish race that is really well done, try Buffalo.

Decent urban marathon.

The race was organized well. The pools of ice water after the race were a very good source of relief! The downhill finish in the last mile was excellent! I did not like the out and back which went over a steel bridge with uneven footing. That was at mile 7? The last 8 miles were nice going through the parks. I will train better next time. THE NET TIMES REPORTED BY THE CHIP TIMING ARE 100% INCORRECT BY 40 MINUTES!

easy travel marathon

We picked this marathon because cheap flights were availible to Buffalo from the South. It was also a Holiday weekend , but we were able to fly in Saturday morning and leave Sunday evening, back home for Memorial Day. The host hotel had a discount rate and the expo was next door. The pasta dinner was a few blocks away and had plenty of food. I could see the start from my hotel window, and the finish was around the corner. The post race party never ran out of food or beer, in fact we had to check out by 1pm so we went to the party late. We met the race director at the party and had a very nice conversation about the marathon, he seemed very interested in what we had to say. The day of the race was actually hotter than we expected and my goal time was not met but I can't blame the organizers for that. As in many marathons, I would like water every mile, but I understand that takes many more volunteers, as it was they had 1000 volunteers for 5000 runners.

Good Organization, good city to run in

Buffalo was my 5th full marathon in 41 days, and my slowest by far. The heat and humidity had everything to do with that. It was 80 degrees by 11 and the wind really picked up after that too, with an average of 15-19mph. The humidity did drop though from a high of 80% at the start to about 55% at the end. Having said all of that, no one can control the weather. The orgainzation of the marathon was really good, I thought. Packet pick up was easy, although two lines for the marathon would have been better instead of one. The free pasta dinner was outstanding, as was the post-race meal. I was at the end and still had my choice of plenty of food and a cold beer. The shirt was cool and the medals are very cool. The marathon advertises a cut off of water stops at 5 hours and a hard cut off for finishing at 6 hours. They make this very clear, and they stuck with it. Being near the end and knowing I would be right at the cut off points, I was prepared for that. I was very pleasantly surprised to find the water stops at miles 23 and 25 still open for the 20 or so of us still on the course at 5:30ish. Two ladies stayed at the mile 25 stop to hand out water and gatoraid, which was just enough to get me through. I suspect they stayed because it was so hot, and there were people still out. My gun time was as close as you cut it and be under 6 hours, I came in at 5:59:59 and was cheered very loudly. Looking at the results there were 13 people behind me, the last at 6:13. The fan support was fantastic, with many people out on their front lawns spraying us down with hoses as we ran by. The Fire Dept was out with their hoses hooked up to hydrants as well. All in all I think in was a good race and I would recommend it to anyone.

Rockin out on the pavement in Buffalo NY!

My third time running in my hometown...LOVE IT. Fan support was great, water stops were fun and plentiful, everyone seemed genuinely happy to be out helping the runners. Warm but that lake breeze was timely and perfect. Beautiful day to run. Missed some of the cool stuff, no race hat this year, heck, even the chip had nothing on it, but all in all rockin course and race...Thank you Buffalo for another great race...I'll be back in 2012 for sure!!! Well done!

Didn't finish, but will definitely come back!

This was supposed to be my third marathon. Alas, due to food poisoning two nights before and super hot and humid weather on the day of the race, I had to bail at the half. I will definitely be back next year though! From what I saw, the Buffalo Marathon organization did a GREAT job of handling things. The volunteers were wonderful, and so were the spectators - thanks to the folks at St. Clare Church for providing the sprinkler! I bailed before the course got to the prettiest parts of Buffalo - it was just too sticky. Lots of folks were walking early on. The tech shirt was gorgeous; my boyfriend finished the half and got an awesome medal and age group award! The expo was kind of small, but I don't really run races for the expos!

Overall a good event

Course was a little goofy, but interesting. For a flat course, more inclines than I expected. Seemed like the last 6-7 miles was a long slow upgrade. Well organized, lots of parking, easy to get to. Nice shirt, pick-up was easy, good water / GU stops. For me, the best part were the spectators, who were vocal, helpful and friendly. Although not a huge crowd, many of the residents in residential neighborhoods brought out hoses, water, and ice which was hugely helpful on such a hot day. Also a thumbs up to the Buffalo Fire Department for having some hoses out also. If I get the chance, I'll be back.

Overall, a good, "smaller" marathon

The Good: The course was relatively flat (there were 4-5 hills in there, but compared to other marathons, it was flat). I thought the police officers and volunteers were excellent. The Bad: The weather was quite hot, and there were some really well placed hills, which made the course not for the faint of heart. The Ugly: The only change I would make is to add water stops every 1.5 miles during the full marathon, instead of every 2 miles. This marathon is NOT for walkers; the first half closes after 3 hours, and by noon the streets are reopened.

Not a good race... Avoid Buffalo for now...

Overall, I had high hopes for Buffalo, but was greatly disappointed. Bag Drop Off: F. There is no bag drop off. How can you run a marathon this size without a bag drop off - and you don't tell anyone about it. Shame. Course: B+. Flat in most places, but just enough hills to give your legs a stretch. Scenery is nice along the marina, but tails off into the warehouse district. Timing: C-. 5 hour cut off is way too short for a "casual" marathon. This could be a signature event for the area, but it is not. Water Stations: D. Every two miles and very disorganized. For 12 attempts, this should be worked out better. I appreciate the effort, but the execution is poor. Every two miles is too little for a race of this size. Not enough volunteers manning the stations. Again, I always appreciate those that come out and help, but, the execution was just not there. Port-o-potties: D. Again, virtually non-existent. Course direction: D. About a mile or two in there is a sign saying marathon turn right, half go straight. BUT, don't turn! You don't turn until 13 miles. Not a big deal? Yes it was. At least 3 marathoners turned as the sign said and had to retrace their steps. Still don't think it is a big deal - the lead half marathoner LOST the race because he was told to turn, even though he should not have - while they gave him money, he did not get the win. Finisher shoot: B+. It would have been an A, but, several times I saw runners needing to dodge other runners who decided to finish with their young children. While it makes for a cute picture, it is not fair to those that worked to earn a finish. IT IS ALSO DANGEROUS. I fear this won't stop until someone gets hurt. Parking: B. Plenty of parking around the start. Not clearly identified, but, it was all around. Expo: D. Second smallest I have ever seen. Very disappointing considering the overall size of the marathon. Packet Pickup: C-. The lines were a bit long and there seemed to be constant slight confusion. Information: D. No notes on parking. No mention of no bag drop off. No specifics on timing groups. Overall, just a disappointment. The race infrastructure needs a complete redesign and significant more community support. Please step up and fix this race. It could be really good & could be but it is not. Avoid Buffalo until this happens.

Much improved and well done this year

This was the best year yet. The community was very supportive the entire route. The neighbors that came out and provided hoses, sprinklers, watermelon and water were well appreciated. The fire men that provided water via fire hoses were also well appreciated. The city of Buffalo is a beautiful city and we should be proud to live here. Thank you to the organizers for a great marathon.

Not recommended

I am a masters runners who has competed in 3-4 marathons a year for the past 20 years. I'm normally a sub-3 hour guy and have raced in 35 states. This will be the first event that I will not recommend or return to. The race director needs to get out and visit/observe other major, city events and come back with fresh ideas and improve his race management. First-timers will not be aware how much better their first experience could be. This event gets by with the bare minimum amenities.

Improvements made, but still a long way to go...

The 2010 edition was my second running of the Buffalo Marathon. If you want a summary of the highs and LOWS from 2009, just go ahead and look at previous posts from that year. For 2010, the t-shirts were a little better (at least they weren't advertised as name brand products this time). Expo was a little bit larger and better organized than the year before. The course was the same - nothing too challenging, but also nothing really nice to look at until you reached the post-mile-18 mark. Fan support was great for such a small marathon, especially those individuals in the residential areas late in the race who were providing their own water bottles and hosing off runners in the 85-degree heat. All in all, better than 2009. My only real complaint is that the "pacers" provided by the race directors. Runners were notified the Thursday before the race that pacers were available. I ran with the 3:10 group and my pacer informed me that his Garmin was dead and proceeded to lead us at a 6:55-7:00/mile minute pace instead of a 7:10-7:15 pace, all the while shouting, "It's okay if we come in a little fast." It didn't sound like much of a difference, but there were many runners who were left behind early on in the race because the pace was so fast. Other runners who ran with the 4:20 group complained that their pacer was too fast as well. A fellow runner ran ahead of the 4:20 group and noticed that their pacer was running with them the rest of the race, commenting on how they were probably going to finish somewhere around 4:10! This was before the 4:20 pacer left them behind and finished somewhere below 4:10. It is this lack of responsibility in organizing a race and it's an important components that will keep me from going back to Buffalo. If I am going to spend that kind of money on a race, I would like to have a better experience.

Flat, fast course and friendly organizers

After running a hilly Nashville Marathon in a thunderstorm (and just falling short of a Boston qualifying time), I came to Buffalo seeking better weather and a flat, fast course. This race certainly delivered! There was plenty of room to run and fellow runners were friendly and encouraging. We had warmer temperatures than normal, and I would have liked to have more water stops in the second half of the race. The expo was small, but the merchandise was bargain-priced and I had fun sifting through it. I have run many of the "big city" races and found Buffalo to be a refreshing change (no overly-packed, over-priced expo or rude staff). Organizers and volunteers were friendly and helpful - I just wish they would have allowed me to exchange my shirt for a smaller one (they are quite large!!). Overall, way to go, Buffalo!

Told you I'd be back!

Second year for the half marathon. Much improved over 2009! Keep working, Buffalo, keep working. Loved the start and the course was just beautiful, as always. Fan support was outstanding, with cheering and neighbors sprinkling the runners as they passed by. Didn't run my best... wasn't ready the for the rare bit of humidity and heat that isn't typically there in my home town. Post-race food was great; water stations... yeah, we could have used more for such a hot day. Great shirt, race medal and finish. Well done, Buffalo... 2011, here I come! I love this race!

Great Race

I really enjoyed this event and will probably do it again. I found the course to be very diverse and highly interesting, ranging from naturally beautiful (Lake Erie and the Niagara River), to industrial (grain elevators), to historic (Delaware Park and Frank Lloyd Wright). There was good fan support, the expo (while small) had everything you could need, and the post-race party and pre-race pasta dinner were fun. Despite being a very inexpensive race, the shirts and medals were excellent, and there was plenty of food and liquids (including beer!) following the race. I struggled a bit with the heat and wished that some additional water stations had been set up to help runners contend with an unusually hot day. Otherwise, great job, Buffalo. Hope to see you again.

Not much to write about...

This was my 25th state, and from the comments on this page I knew that this race was going to be pretty average. The course is flat - I had to laugh at a half-marathoner who dropped several f-bombs about having to run over one of the two overpasses. We had a warm day and more water stops should have been added - a couple of us helped one young woman who was out on her feet, and I saw many other runners who were affected by the heat. A big thanks to the spectators who were out with sprinklers and hoses. The post-race party had pizza and beer. I thought it was ridiculous that one family fed the kids and grandparents while runners were still on the course. Other than that, I thought they put on a decent race that worked with my schedule; it just wasn't that memorable.

Not much shade on this course

Packet pickup was easy, with a small expo. Porta-lets were placed on the wrong side of the starting line, which means people had to wander through the frontrunners to get to their starting place. Few porta-lets on the course itself. Course did its best to showcase the more scenic portions of Buffalo, though there's only so much you can do when running around in a city. Post-race food was rather weak, and there were no complementary massages. Easy to find parking for getting to and from the race. I recommend the Howard Johnson's in Fort Erie in Canada - cheapest hotel in the area, only 3.5 miles from the start, and no lines for crossing the border early Sunday morning.

Great spectators; no-hassle race

Pros: -Great spectators out with hoses and sprinklers on a warm day providing lots of encouragement. -Race morning number pickup, so no trek to Buffalo the day before. -Easy and cheap ($5) parking, right at race start/finish. No congestion when arriving/leaving. -Low-cost, no-frills race. I just want to run, so I love these races -Not crowded and quick to spread out. I was able to cross the start line about 15 seconds after the gun, and be on pace in about a quarter mile. -Fellow racers were friendly and offered encouragement and conversation. -Several GU stations, nicely placed BEFORE the water so you have a little time to eat, then wash it down. -Aid stations were well manned and not crowded (for my pace anyways). -Pacers were friendly and easy to spot. Cons: -Small water/Gatorade cups. I began to walk through the aid stations to drink enough fluids. -Trouble finding restroom miles 8-18. Maybe just me, but I couldn't find them. Maybe chalk the roads to help runners know they are coming up? After mile 18 there were restrooms everywhere. -Shirt is nothing to write home about. -Finish area was small. Runners were trickling in from the full when I finished, but since the half had two-thirds of the runners, I am sure it was crowded for that finish. Course: The first half of the course was around the waterfront and industrial-looking areas near the convention center. Some "hills" were there, but these were mostly inclines from overpasses or bridges. It was nice to have the the whole field running together for awhile. Just before the half finish, the full marathon runners divert and are off on a very flat run in neighborhoods and parks. The spectators here, while not large in numbers, were very supportive and had out sprinklers, hoses, and their own aid stations. The full marathon had about 1,000 runners, so for the second half of the race I was mostly running alone or near 1-2 people. A couple of areas of the road were a little rough and uneven, but I noticed this because some of the road was freshly paved, making the contrast more obvious. Overall, I would definitely run this race again if I am in the area. Thank you to the organizers and volunteers for making this race happen!

Not Bad, Not Great

GOOD: Pre-race pasta party: with beer! Volunteers: very enthusiastic. Course: mainly flat - includes downtown, lakefront, park, residential. Nice finishers' medal, t-shirt. BAD: Expo organization: expo closed at 4 p.m. - way too early for out-of-town runners; packet had only one ticket to pre-race party, though I paid online for 2 - I had to tell them. Medical tent: I lay on cot for 5 minutes before I was noticed, and only because my wife pointed me out! UGLY: Finish area: way too cramped. Post-race party: ran out of pizza early. Crowd support: was everyone out of town for Memorial Day Weekend?? For a city marathon, Buffalo was a little disappointing, but a few changes could have it challenging the big boys.

Worst marathon thus far

This by far is the worst distance event I have done. The expo was entirely too small and unorganized for a major city event. The starting area was entirely too narrow for the number of racers. More water stops were needed for a hot day - starting at mile 3 and then every 2 miles was not enough. Although advertised as a flat course, it wasn't in the first half. I was dodging traffic for the second half of the race. Cars were being allowed to pass everywhere, with Buffalo PD being more concerned with getting traffic moving rather than the safety of the runners. Maybe next year move the course so that there is not a 3-4 minute hold-up for a train. At the end, more nourishment than just bananas and oranges that have been sitting in the hot sun all day would be nice. I did appreciate the few residents who actually did come out and cheer, and especially the people who cooled us off with their sprinklers/hoses.

Much improved organization

Very pleased to see the organizational improvements. Well run, especially considering the huge growth in participation. Unfortunately I'm beginning to feel like a marathon weed in a half-marathon lawn in Buffalo. Getting a little too big and too expensive for my taste. Pros: + The convention center registration was a nice step up from the Hyatt + Great neighborhood/spectator support Cons: - Getting pricey and crowded - Can't you control the temp and the trains? :)

A beautiful, urban race with a small-town feel

What a great race this was this year! The weather was very hot after the half point, but not humid, and the start was early at 7 a.m. The course is new and much nicer than it has been for the last 4 years; and the volunteers and spectators were enthusiastic (not as numerous as in, say, NYC, but many more than in prior years and many more than similarly-sized races like Wineglass and Mohawk Hudson). It ran through some beautiful areas of the city, including the waterfront, Delaware Park, and Mansion Row. This race has truly come a long way since 2005 when I first ran it. About 850 runners finished this year - more than ever before - and it was much better organized than in the past. The volunteers were plentiful and very enthusiastic! Packet pick-up was efficient and easy, and the expo was quite impressive this year compared to in years past. It was larger with more vendors. This marathon has come a long way, baby! Finally, I witnessed the most amazing thing I ever have in a marathon, and I've run 18 of them. Some jackass in a white BMW convertible plowed through a stopping point at a traffic circle, where runners were entering. A volunteer ran in front of the car screaming STOP, and the driver started hassling him: "Who the hell are you to stop me..." And at that exact moment when the driver was hassling him, two cops in uniform who were on the other side of the circle (so the BMW guy didn't see them) started sprinting toward the car! All of the runners, myself included, started cheering and clapping. I think that volunteer who stopped the guy should get a medal. He wasn't getting paid for his time, he didn't even look like he ran, and he could have been seriously hurt if the driver had not stopped. My hat is off to that volunteer. This was one time where there was a cop (two, actually) when I needed one! I will be back next year!

Disappointing

Having traveled to participate in this race (half-marathon), I was disappointed. It would be a good "local" race, but not worth making a trip. PROS: -affordable -nice size - not crowded, so you could spread out CONS: -a freight train runs through the course around mile 10. It interrupted the race (especially for the 8:30/mile pace). It lasted a few minutes (which is equivalent to a half-mile or more). Runners had to wait for it to pass. -the finish line was way too narrow -the finish area had half-bananas and quartered-oranges; no other nourishment - for a hot day, needed more water stations

Race has outgrown its course and facilities

Ran the half in 2010. Noticed that the race has really grown in size, showing the popularity of the half marathon. Lined up (as I always do) at the recommended start point for my expected finish and passed runners the entire way. Ran my exact expected time, which means everyone I passed lined up ahead of where they should have been. The first mile and the out-and-back loop by the marina were very congested. Many groups of runners were running 3-5 abreast at slower paces. Not enough water stops in the first half of the course for the hot temp of the day. Very cool medal. I'm sure they can alter the course to allow for the popularity the race seems to be gaining. I heard runners had to wait for a train to cross the course at one point. Not good. As always, I met a lot of nice runners at the race and enjoyed Buffalo.

A Great Run

What a great run. The Buffalo Marathon was well staffed and the route was well controlled, as far as traffic goes. I only wish they could have held up the train that cost me 2 minutes. The race really shows you a full range view of the City of Good Neighbors, traveling through poorer, working-class and rather upscale neighborhoods. The fans were awesome and the final hundred meters to the finish line were surrounded by great spectators. I couldn't have asked for more (other than those 2 minutes back).

Good run for your money

Well organized run. The pacers were a great feature! One negative: it was advertised as a FLAT COURSE. The first 13 miles had about 6 or 7 uphill climbs that were not expected. However, the last 13 miles were flat and fast. Overall, a much better marathon since my last time running Buffalo.

Buffalo Marathon, improved but...

There is a lot about the Buffalo Marathon that has improved. However, Buffalo needs to decide what kind of a marathon they want. If they want to attract more people, more needs to be done in terms of the course. The course route needs improvement as well as adding timers to the route. Designated parking and organization thereof were lacking. Spectators were limited in support, but volunteers were great. Water stations were good, but porta-johns along the route are needed. Fruit was also nice at the end of the race; possibly include it along the route as well. Know the train schedule so that runners don't have to wait while a train added to their time. That was an important oversight. Most disappointing was that this was not a walker-friendly event. The police were quite abrasive in cutting off the walkers and directing them street-side within a block of the start. I am a native and I do love this area, so I would really like to see this marathon improve and become an event for all participants.

The negatives outweigh the positives

This was only my second marathon, so I don't have much to base my comments on. But I was disappointed with several aspects of this race: #1 - Where were the mile markers? It's possible that I missed a few, but I didn't spot my first mile marker until mile #7. #2 - Why couldn't water/Gatorade be provided at every mile? It was given out on mile #3 and then every two miles after that. For such a hot day, this was a terrible oversight. #3 - How many pacers were there? And where were they? I saw one for 3:55, and that was it. And trust me: I was all over the place. If they were on the course, they weren't very visible. #4 - What kind of course was this? We saw Buffalo's worst. We passed through bridges, and bad parts of town, and even across railroad tracks. Of course, a TRAIN came, delaying many folks by more than three minutes. #5 - There was poor communication between marathon planners and the city. Saw many unsafe occurrences, with cars coming onto the course and not knowing what's going on. This marathon seemed to catch much of the city by surprise. #6 - Why were we running in such tight spaces? I was getting claustrophobic out there. #7 - Where were the bathrooms? Took me three miles to find one at one point. #8 - I don't think it would have been too much trouble to have fruit provided earlier than the 14th mile. Other than that, this was a great marathon!!

Difficult weather conditions expose the flaws

I have run Buffalo 3 times and this one was not good. The water at all of the later stops was warm and not much good for helping to keep core body temp down. The medical tent was closed up at 6 hours while the people most likely to need help had just come in or were just coming in. The course closing does not mean that the medical tent should fold up. Many times, heat issues are delayed and don't arise immediately after finishing. They ran out of ice at the finish, and the drinks again were not kept cold. For those who were running between 8- and 9-minute pace and got caught and delayed by the train crossing the course, I hope that you were not cheated out of reaching your goal or qualifying for Boston by such poor planning. The organizers were quoted as saying that the people who were held up were on a 9:30- or 10-minute pace. That is bunk. Check the schedule of trains; don't try to blow off a real problem. People work too hard to prepare for a marathon to have their day ruined by a lack of forethought on the part of the organizers. Buffalo could be a good race and there were many kind spectators along the way who made the day bearable, but they need to make some serious adjustments in the organization.

Not Bad, Not Great

This marathon had no major gaffes, but there were some little things that need improving. The pre-race expo closed at 4 p.m., which meant runners driving a long way had to leave early and drive fast. I paid online for an extra pasta dinner ticket, but there was only one in my packet - I had to ask where the other one was, and it was at another station farther down the table! After the race, I was in some pain, and I lay on the cot in the medical tent for at least 5 minutes before someone noticed me - and only after my wife pointed me out! The post-race party ran out of pizza early on. I had to settle for a bagel. Worst of all: extremely tepid crowd support. Was the entire city visiting relatives out of town for Memorial Day Weekend? For those that did show up to support the runners, thank you - but there's nothing impolite about making a little noise. On the plus side, the volunteers (as usual) were fabulous. Timing and logistics were spot on (except for a few superannuated cops who had trouble controlling traffic). The course was mainly flat, and took in everything (downtown, lake, parks, neighborhoods). Fluid stations were every 2 miles - definitely a necessity in the hot weather (lots of sprinklers and hoses from the residents, which was really nice). Great technical t-shirt and buffalo nickel finisher's medal. Oh... and beer at the pasta dinner and post-race party (maybe not a good thing, considering the abnormally high temps)! Thanks, Buffalo, for a nice race. Just a few improvements could make it great.

I look forward to this race all year!

I ran the half for the first time last year and had a blast; I could hardly wait to run it again this year! It was a beautiful day for a race. I definitely appreciate the early start so that we missed the heat. This year was as great an experience as last year. I had company from my mom, friend, and boyfriend this time, which made the weekend that much more special. We went to the pasta dinner the night before and it was delicious, with generous helpings! The expo that day was fun and organized and a pleasure to go to. The morning of the race was exciting, the music was fun, and the start was on time!! I ran with my mom for the first half, and we had so much fun running near the water and in the shade of the park. The bridges on the last half were an excellent challenge. The cheers from the crowd are one of my favorite parts; Buffalonians know how to support each other! It is a fast course and everyone I ran with that day was pleased with their times. I can't wait for next year!

Positives. 1. Nice course - seemed hillier than it should have been though 2. Good volunteers 3. Easy to get to and leave 4. Small size but not too small 5. Good New York State run Negatives: 1. NOT ENOUGH WATER STOPS. FOR A MARATHON, PARTICULARLY A VERY HOT ONE, MORE WATER STOPS ARE NEEDED.

One of the best!

I have run at least 10 half marathons and this was one of the best. I ran it in 2010 and the course, organization and crowd support were outstanding. I really want to congratulate the organizers and the city of Buffalo since you have an event you should feel proud of....

Nice Job, Buffalo

This race seems to have improved over the last few years. The course is not flat and has a few hills here and there (mostly bridges), but nothing bad. Awesome medals this year. The only complaint I have is the actual finisher's chute. You cross the mat and SLAM... bottleneck. Maybe open or widen the area a bit next year. All in all, well worth running.

Disappointing

The race is run through the projects and the worst parts of the city. They did not order any small shirts, which makes no sense as female runners are typically smaller! The packet pick up was very disorganized. The medal is unimpressive. This race could be one of the best if it were organized better and had better community support. I am from Buffalo and run this race because it is local.

official results are a waste of money

Another person wanted to know where all of the entry fee money went since the shirt and medal were lousy. I figured it out. I just received the "official results" in the mail today, and I can't believe that, in the day and age of the internet, that money is being wasted on sending out a book of results for a race that happened 2 months ago - especially since the date is listed as the 31st instead of the 24th (when it actually was) and the relay results are from a previous year! If you are going to spend money to send out results, they should at least be correct. The race was fun but could be so much better! Also, I only ran in the relay, but did so in the third leg and found much of it to be uphill.

Good marathon overall; missing first aid stations

I've never been to Buffalo, and this gave me a reason to go there (aside from visiting the founders of Buffalo wings at Anchor Bar). It's a small marathon with many local runners. The expo was very small, but the deals were great. The pasta party was nice, and a great deal if you wanted to bring your family ($5 for each additional person, and kids ate free). There are more half-marathon runners and relay team members than full-marathon runners. The first half of the course was nice - allowing us to see the city of Buffalo - and the second half was okay. You ran through the residential area of Buffalo. We ran inside a city park, which was a bit weird with non-marathon runners, bicyclists, and park-goers. We also ran on the side of the street next to a cemetery, which was also weird. Here are my pros and cons for this event. PROS: - Event organization was good. The staff and volunteers were very friendly and helpful. - The technical, short-sleeve t-shirt was plain, but of good quality, with a small logo on the front. - There were a lot more spectators than I expected, given the small size of the race. - Not a very crowded race, which was nice. - I did enjoy them calling out your name and where you're from as you cross the finish line. CONS: - The finisher's medal was light and small - not very impressive. - Post-race finishing area setup was poorly setup, in my opinion, and small. - My biggest complaint is about the FIRST AID STATIONS. Where were they? Were there even any? Staff and volunteers along the marathon route were NOT very knowledgeable when it came to telling me where first aid stations were. Many just said, "I don't know" or said, "It's the next water or mile stop mark." I felt a hot spot at mile 6 and was looking for a first aid station for either Vaseline or tape or anything, but not even ONE staff member or volunteer or police officer knew where the first aid station was located. That made the run very disappointing and frustrating at times. I ended up just running the entire event and getting the biggest blister I've gotten in any marathon run. Would I run this marathon again? Maybe not the full, but I might consider the half or relay, since they seem to the focus. Would I recommend this race? Sure, if you've never been to Buffalo and would like to run a small marathon. Overall, an okay experience! John Beishline did a great job improving the Buffalo Marathon.

Great PR Race

I was impressed with this race. After running Boston I was looking for the chance to run a faster time. This was billed as flat and fast and I was not disappointed. To the organizers, I second the need for split times. It would be great to have a 1/2 split. Overall, it's well done and I will definitely run this again next year, as the timing is perfect for applying all of your Boston training!

Good but not GREAT!

I enjoyed this marathon. I traveled from Virginia to participate. I was pleased overall. It was small and that made it pleasant. The weather was pretty good, even though we did have a little bit of rain. The expo, although small, was fun to pick through. I did not like the late change of course - especially since none of the maps were updated. I really like to review prior to running a race, and this made that nearly impossible. I have to mention the lack of elevation charts for this course. There were at least six overpasses in the first 13.1, and several overpasses and two lengthy inclines in the second half. Letting people know the elevations helps them decide whether it is hilly for them or not. I come from flat-lands, so any inclines are "hilly" to me. It was a good experience, the people were friendly, and the scenery was interesting!

Way to Go, Buffalo!!! Great Race Experience!

This was my 15th marathon, and it ranks as one of the best: great weather, "runner-friendly" logistics, good organization, friendly people, flat and fast course (showing off nicer areas, including Delaware Park), and an overall excellent value for the money. I highly recommend this race, and would run this one again in a heartbeat. Way to go, Buffalo!!!

Great Place for a First Marathon

What a great experience. It is a pretty small marathon. It was pretty well organized with plenty of volunteers and police support. The people complaining about the medal or the schwag goody bag (the type of technical T-shirt, the training T-shirt, assorted samples) run races for the wrong reasons. In my opinion, they are a bunch of cry babies who should go to the mall if they want a shirt or pancake-flat course. The packet pickup was fairly quick and painless. The expo was fine. It was small, and had nothing I hadn't seen before. Honestly, I never stick around for those things. They also offer a free pre-race pasta dinner for all race entrants. I didn't attend, as I was staying with my bro- and sis-in-law. They had already made plans for a pre-race meal with other runners. The gun went off at precisely 7:00 a.m. No shoving or anything. It was a single common start for all runners: full marathoners, halfies, and relay runners. Weather-wise, the day was perfect. It was cloudy for most of the morning with temps in the between 60-70. It felt like 65 but I can't be sure. There was a slight, cooling breeze. Very nice. About an hour and half into the race, it started to drizzle. It was so light that it was more like a misting. It lasted about a half-hour and didn't even dampen the ground, but it did help with cooling. By 10:30-11:00 a.m., the sun was up, but it still wasn't that hot or muggy - maybe 70 degrees tops. The course was fairly flat and, I would think, fast (I am not sure as I am not a fast runner, nor do I have any previous marathon experience to compare to). If people think that it was hilly, then they should try some races in Ithaca or Utica (the Boilermaker or the Falling Leaves). It winds its way through downtown, along the water's edge, around Delaware Park, and through some nice residential streets. There was a stretch through a more industrial/commercial area in the beginning, which wasn't much to look at. Beginning at mile 3, there was water and Gatorade every 2 miles with port-a-johns at 10K, 20K, 30K, and scattered in between. I noticed very little congestion at the tables, and the volunteers were definitely supportive. Traffic control was very good, and I never had trouble with residents (pulling out cars or blocking roads). The finish is at the end of a downhill stretch and your greeted loudly by the crowd. If the MC can see your bib number, your name is announced over the microphone as you cross the finish line (mine was). The post-race party is in a hotel (I forget which one) with pizza, beer, bagels, bananas, apples, and a DJ (typical stuff). Overall, I think that the Buffalo was a good first marathon for its smaller size, with good organization, mild weather, a flat course, and low registration fee. I will definitely do it again - hopefully without any whiners there.

The volunteers/police were FABULOUS! THANK YOU!

As a Buffalo native who now resides in Colorado, I have always wanted to run this marathon, and it did not disappoint. The volunteers and police officers were FABULOUS - I can't thank them enough. There were plenty of porta-potties at the start. There was plenty of water/Gatorade along the course. My father handed me water at the Belle Watling water station at the 17-mile mark - thrilling! There were plenty of opportunities for my family to see me along the course. The only change I would like to see is the ability to record split times along the course. Overall, GREAT JOB! I would run this again, and recommend it.

Helpful to slowpokes!

This was my third marathon, and first in Buffalo. I was shooting for 4:30, but due to bad cramps, I finished in 5:23 - definitely a back-of-the-pack finish. The crowds were sparse but very encouraging, and the course aid people were very helpful, as were the Buffalo PD. I think I was one of the last people to finish who ran the whole thing on the street. The course was pretty, flat except for the overpasses and some LONG gradual inclines in the second half. The water and food stations were great and still had enough left for me at the end of the race. Cons: The shirt is kind of cheap, as was the medal. I know technical shirts are all the rage, but I prefer a nice, long-sleeve, cotton T. I have enough workout gear. I want a shirt I can wear during the day, not just for a workout. Overall, I was pleased, and will most likely return at some point for redemption.

Great first-time race

I did the half marathon for the first time and it was great. The fans and workers were very encouraging. The course was flatter than I expected and marked out nicely. Having never run before in any race, I thought the start was disorganized. The after-party was great. I am running again next year and thinking of trying the full.

nice race

This was my first full marathon (I've done twp half-marathons - not Buffalo). Overall, I was pleased. Pros: The host hotel was very convenient and allowed late checkout. The volunteers were great; there was plenty of water and Gatorade throughout the course; and there were numerous porta-potties on the course (I didn't need them but it was nice to know they were there!). The course was okay - some depressed areas but also some nice ones. It was flat, with some mild, rolling hills. Cons: The race t-shirt is really bland and runs big - no smalls were left. The finish line was congested, and some runners mistook the first banner for the finish line. Also, the after party had no water - just beer and soda. Overall, I would recommend it. We got lucky with the weather too!

The Buffalo Half Rocked!!!!

I flew up from St. Louis with my friend to run my hometown 1/2 marathon. What a great race!! Being originally from Buffalo, I loved the course, as it made its way through the streets and along the waterfront. Are we there yet? Not exactly, but based on what I read on the site, and based on running this year, Buffalo is on the way to a first-class race for international competition. I read a lot of stuff about the shirt, medal, port-a-potties... but come on now, can't we rise above all of that and run the race for the pure enjoyment of running? Isn't that what we ran the Buffalo race for? Anyways, I LOVED it, especially mile 6 and 12 running by the HSBC and The Aud. Buffalo, you really showed your beauty on the 24th, delivering a perfect day to run. Well done, Buffalo Marathon Team!!! I'll be back... and maybe - just maybe - next year, my first full marathon will be Buffalo!

Will be back next year - loved it!!!

I truthfully looked for something bad to say about my experience, and couldn't come up with anything. What a great race/weekend Buffalo puts on!! The course is pretty much all flat, except for 3 or 4 small bridges in the first half (no longer than a tenth of a mile each). The first half takes your around the beautiful waterfront, while the second half takes you through some very nice neighborhoods and parks. This isn't a big marathon when compared to the big boys (Chicago, NYC, MCM, etc.); however, I couldn't ask for better crowd support. I don't remember going longer than a quarter of a mile without fan support, even during the middle miles, where it tends to get lonely. All in all, I will support this race year in and year out, as it puts on a great event!! If you decide to run Buffalo, you will not be disappointed - not to mention that it only cost me $70!!

It's a good race, but could be a great event

I started running 5K races two years ago (25 in total so far). This was my first half-marathon. My son has been in five. The volunteers were great. The weather was outstanding, and the fellow runners made the day special. But Buffalo is missing a wonderful chance to showcase an event and not just a race. There are thousands of people looking for places to eat and spend time. On a Sunday, you are hard-pressed to find a place to eat. At last year's marathon, we had a large group of people who wanted to eat after the event to celebrate with my son. The downtown restaurants were not even aware of the event. How about food vendors on the street? When you have this many people, from so many places, let's make it a special event and keep people coming back to Buffalo.

Buffalo puts on a good showing

As a returning runner of 3 Buffalo Marathons, I wanted to share my thoughts about a good race. The course showcases many parts of the city. The changes in the first half were positive, eliminating a congested bike path on the way out in the first few miles. The rest of the course went through some nice areas and was overall very flat. Traffic control, fluids, and other issues related to runners were handled in a stellar fashion. The finish at the convention center was conveniently located near the hotel, and the after-race party was decent. The medal and shirt were decent, though I don't run races for this kind of stuff. As a finisher of 55 marathons, I recommend Buffalo as a fine spring race. I will be back next year.

Great Race, Flat Race

I recently ran this in 2009. The expo was very informative. The spectators and volunteers were greatly helpful with water, cheering, and Gatorade throughout the course. I would HIGHLY recommend this for a PR. However, I would suggest that if you have kids consider staying at the Niagara Falls instead of downtown. My boys were bored, as there was not much to do in downtown Buffalo. Overall, a great event that was run well. I received all t-shirts and things that were promised to me, and the after-party was great. The only problem I had was I got the flu the night before my first marathon. It was tough running 26.2 with no sustenance.

Logisticallly simple, hassle-free race!

I have been to Buffalo only once recently, so I knew that it was a small city. The Hyatt Hotel was where the registration and packet pick up were located. Parking was right there. The start line was right beside the hotel. The finish line was a block away. The hotel offered complementary, small breakfast in the lobby. Everything was very straight forward and easy. The race course was pleasant; the first part going back and forth across the waterfront was fine. There were a lot more turns than in most marathons, and they were well marked. The volunteers did a superb job! The residents were quite respectful and appeared very patient. After the halfway point, it was mentally difficult to leave the half-marathon runners, as the company became sparse, and the turns became less frequent. It would be worth considering having the half-marathoners start two hours later and doing the second half of the course (or part), as they do in the Ottawa Marathon. It would thin out the starting miles, which were packed, and it would also give the marathoners a huge boost. The spectators did a great job with the hoses and sprinklers and Super Soakers, as the sun shone and the heat was turned on! Adequate porta-potties seemed to be everywhere, as well as numerous park washrooms. It would have been nice to have more mile markers early on, as it was difficult to pace. Although I didn't have a PB, it is certainly a course where one is possible, and I definitely would run this one again!

C- at best

Expo: D. Too small and congested. Not a bad selection on vendors and attractions; however, if you want the race to be respected, put on a class-act. After 15 minutes there, I was ready to go. Information: C. The kids' mini-marathon was advertised on the website as being held on the 24th. It actually took place on the 23rd. My son and I nearly missed it! In fact, my 10-year-old happened to notice the kids' registration table despite the cluster of an expo. How many people missed it altogether? Training shirts: F. No clue what happened there. I received my shirt 3 weeks before the race. And that was after a phone call to the race team. The shirts were horrible. Nice try, yes, but as stated above: Class goes along way. The shirt was heavy cotton, and with poor graphics and small print. Race shirt: Double F. I'm still not sure if the race participants should seek some type of legal action. The website states: "New Balance technical shirt." What I have in my possession mentions nothing of New Balance. It does have, in very small print, "Buffalo Marathon." That's it. No sponsors, no colorful designs, no mottoes or cool quotes. Just a plain, burgundy shirt, likely from some surplus store. The Course: B. Poorly marked at times, and not as flat as the website led us to believe. Great fan support, however - though there wasn't much of it. The race itself was poorly advertised, as I saw no mention of it around the city the week prior. The start was a bit congested and could have been better managed. Medals. C. I have received more creative medals from local 5K runs. It makes one wonder where all the money from the entry fees is really going. Overall. C-. Good people (runners), fair course, and great fan support. If we can get the race committee on board (maybe actually visit a well-run marathon), this has real potential to be a great race.

pretty nice

Well organized and a nice race. The first half goes through a more industrial part of town, which is fine because you are with the half-marathon people. The second half is in nice neighborhoods, where there was really good spectator support. The police and volunteers did a good job of closing roads. There could be more information on race parking, pre-race toilets, and bag check. But all in all, a fine race.

A nice morning and a decent race

This was my first Buffalo Marathon, and based on previous negative comments I was a bit nervous, but happily things went fairly smoothly. Pros: 1) A relatively flat course, although there are definitely a few significant overpasses in the first half and some long, slow inclines in the second. 2) Race volunteers at every intersection did a great job of controlling traffic and were cheerful at the same time. 3) Water and Gatorade were plentiful and it was fairly easy to tell which was which. 4) The finish line announcers did a nice job and I enjoyed the party atmosphere afterwards, even though I was in no shape to be drinking a beer! 5) We got lucky with the weather this year. I feared it would be much warmer. Cons: 1) As I'm not from Buffalo, I relied on the website for info and found it lacking. For example, I could find no information on parking, nor did it state clearly when online registration would end. 2) No porta-potties at the start. There were huge lines in the hotel restrooms and seemingly public restrooms on upper levels of the hotel were LOCKED. 3) I strongly dislike having the half and full marathons start together. The first half felt quite congested and the second half felt the opposite (it seemed I was almost running alone at times). 4) Probably at least 3/4 of the course was beautiful, but the rest was pretty sketchy and/or industrial. 5) Spectators were few and far between, especially during the second half.

Perfect weather, best crowds around!!

This was my first Buffalo Half-Marathon. The course was intermittently disappointing; there are beautiful downtown areas, and about half of the race venue (and smell) was disappointing! The registration area at the Hyatt was too small for the number of people present for registration, shopping, etc. The port-a-potty situation was better than expected. The participants were great and friendly; and the crowd and well-wishers were the best!! I loved the waterfront portion of the race!!

NOT as advertised

If you want a flat, fast course, do NOT run this race. Rolling hills and long gradual inclines and declines would describe the course's geography. Apparently somebody stole all the "$35.00 New Balance" technical shirts and replaced them with very cheap knock-offs. The weather was good, and the hotel was very close to the start (and quite affordable - nicer than expected). Water stations were fine. The first half of the course (approximately from mile 7 to mile 12) was changed about 3 days ahead of time from a flat waterfront view, to a hilly, industrial wasteland view. More notice next time please, so I can make arrangements to run Ottawa instead. Don't fool yourself; the course (with or without last-minute changes) is NOT flat. I guess that was my biggest gripe - advertising a race as a flat, fast potential Boston qualifier, when it is NOT. Please don't fall into the same trap I did. If you don't mind rolling terrain, this course is fine. To end on a positive note, the Anchor Bar (where Buffalo chicken wings were invented) was an awesome place to eat.

A well-run marathon

Not having been to Buffalo before, I was pleasantly surprised at how nice the city was. I enjoyed the course, and I thought the spectators and volunteers were great. There were plenty of bathrooms, the water stations were well spaced out, and the finish area was well organized. Small but decent medal. Plenty of food. I can only say good things about my experience, and I would recommend this marathon.

Nice Job, Buffalo!

First off, do not look at past reviews and judge this organization or the race itself. The Buffalo Marathon organizers, director, and volunteers did a phenomenal job this year, I felt. We stayed at the Hyatt right near the start and finish lines, and the staff were very courteous and helpful. The room was nice, and they offer a marathon discounted rate if you tell them you are there for the run. The packet pick up and expo went really smoothly. I liked the shirt that they gave out this year. It's nice for running/sweating in. It's got the simple Buffalo Marathon logo without a bunch of ads all over it. The expo that they had was small, but there were still some nice things to pick up if you wanted to do some small shopping. The disposable chip was a nice touch, so you didn't need to worry about making sure it got turned in at the end also. The course itself was scenic but does have some hills (the bridge overpass areas). The residents and support along the course this year were really nice, with a lot of cheering - especially near the 10K portion. There were even a few neighborhoods around 22 miles handing out ice-cold Gatorade to runners on their own. Thank you. The finish was nice, and they called out your name as you came in (if they could, due to runner volume), which was nice, as this was my first full marathon. Very nice finisher's medal, and they seemed to have a lot this year. I didn't hear of anyone finishing and not getting one. There was plenty of water, orange slices, etc. at the finish. The gathering at the Convention Center afterward was nice, with free beer and food during the awards ceremony. Very well handled marathon this year, and we will definitely be returning next year. Well done, Buffalo!

Loved it, for the most part!!

This was my 2nd marathon. The crowd support was excellent, and the weather was good. The free pasta dinner was AWESOME!! It's not as flat as I thought it would be; there were lots of long, gradual inclines. Very crowded in the first 4 or so miles - annoyingly so. Also, they ran out of small shirts. Overall, great though! A 20-minute PR for me!

Good job, Buffalo

Interesting course, in terms of variety of scenery - waterfront, old industrial area and pleasant neighborhoods. Fairly flat. Good volunteer support. Fans, although spread out/sparse in places, are strong in spirit. My second time at Buffalo, and I'd recommend it, or consider doing it again.

Could be great... in another couple of years

Being from Buffalo, I WANT to like this race... but it's just not there yet. It's not that it's horrible; it just doesn't pay attention to details, some of which would be SO easy to fix. They changed the course this year - partly for congestion, and partly due to a bridge being out. I really like the course changes, although they added 3 good-sized rolling hills to the first half. They say that "the race shirt will be New Balance technical shirt." Funny... mine is from some company I've never heard of and doesn't say, "New Balance" anywhere. The start line is a mess - just put some "pace balloons" or something to mark where people should line up. There was WAY too much racer traffic early on for such a small race. Even with the changes, why go to the most depressed (and depressing) industrial part of the city? (Can you call it "industrial" if all of the businesses are closed?) I'd rather zigzag on millionaire's row to make up those miles. The spectators are great; there just aren't a lot of them. The medals are crap. If you like attention to detail, this is NOT your race. It has poorly marked miles and extremely few split clocks. Fluid stations slightly confusing (different colored cups for water and gatorade, please). If you'd like to do your long, slow run with a lot more people, and some food and beer afterward, this is perfect for you.

Perfect weather!

I am from the Buffalo area, but now live in Southern Maryland. I ran the Buffalo Half in '07 and the Buffalo Full in '08. I did both of these races with my father and we have loved it both times. I know that Buffalo doesn't seem like a good city to tour, but the weather is perfect and the course is scenic and flat. The finish line area is spacious and easy to watch other finishers. I am also signed up to run this race in '09 and I am very excited about it.

Positive experience in Buffalo

I had a very positive experience. I ran the half-marathon last year. Buffalo always puts on a great post-race party (pizza and beer, etc.) and the organization seemed good to me. Hotel was close to the start and the people of Buffalo are fantastic, as always. Was it perfect? Of course not, but it was great. I would be running the full in 2009 but I have a friend's wedding that weekend, so Buffalo in 2010 it is!

Not Enough....

My experience.... Not enough t-shirts, not enough porta-potties at the start (not by a long shot), not enough room for all of the runners for the first 4 miles (full and half run together on park paths), not enough spectators, not enough supplies at the finish, not enough vendors at the expo to make it worthwhile, and not enough (not ANY!!!) response from the race director concerning problems. Not enough incentive for me to run this again after competing it twice.... I will not be running this in 2009.

Poorly Organized

This could have been such a nice marathon... beautiful lakefront territory and good, old, western, New York attitude, but it was so badly organized. I made several attempts to get a hold of the organizer before the race date and he blew me off. We never received our pre-race t-shirts, and they had run out of men's t-shirts on the race day, even though my husband signed up literally four months in advance. These small details make a difference. We were disappointed all around.

Poor Registration and No Shirt

Just wanted to echo the comments of several others. I too arrived at the race (after pre-registering well in advance) to be told that the t-shirts were all gone. My number was taken and I was told it would be mailed. I've still got no shirt, and several attempts to contact people haven't helped. Sounds petty, but part of the marathon experience for me is getting a shirt. I will not be running Buffalo again.

Bad organization - NO RESPONSE to email

Half marathon is a nicely flat course but through a decayed area of Buffalo - easy to get a good finish time. BUT... I had a very similar experience to MM's from below, with the exception that at the expo, I was promised a shirt by mail - which I have yet to receive. I too have sent two e-mails to the race director, politely asking for my shirt - with ZERO RESPONSE... not even the courtesy of a "sorry." At the expo, they (the lady volunteers) offered and took my race number and added it to a list that had quite a few other numbers on it for post-race mailing of shirts. That was after they tried to sell me on taking a medium because they "ran large." I tried it on and that wasn't so. I was there to pick up my shirt and bag (which I did receive - you didn't miss much except for spaghetti dinner discount coupon). Well, before the end of the expo on Saturday. I tried to be courteous in signing up ahead, knowing that helps in planning shirts, etc. I signed up for a large shirt; to me, this is an implied contract - I sign up ahead AND PAY MONEY and I get a race and a large shirt (unless I show up last-minute). A t-shirt is not that big a deal (well, on second thought it is - I trained long and hard all winter for this race; it would be nice to have something to show for it, like the women in my group who got shirts). How this has been handled is an issue reflective of the race management - poor. And while I'm on my soap box.... Maybe have a few more than the dozen or so porta-johns for the 2,300 racers at the start area - I've not seen as much public urination in my life (well maybe except for the Boilermaker in Utica - but that doesn't start in a downtown city area). I tried to drive as much of the course as possible the night before... good luck to me. The course directions were filled with omissions, errors and mixed up sentences - kind of like the website, which had old information from the year before stating this was a new course this year (2008). I too saw several people run into the posts (at the end of the harbor condo area) designed to keep cars off the park paths. Fortunately, I was familiar with them from the year before.

1st marathon... next one will be somewhere else!

While this was my first marathon, I've run other, shorter races... so it's not like i have no reference at all. Having the course go over a 3-foot wide footpath within the first 2 miles (which doubles back and is also about the 3.5-mile mark) is about the dumbest thing EVER!!! You know what's harder then having over a thousand people "racing" in such a small area? Having them going two directions in that small area! Also, the course either closed earlier than advertised, or they opened it up to traffic earlier then advertised. My other major gripe is that volunteers quit early. I'm slow (4:30 marathon time), but there were still people behind me. When I finished, I drank a Gatorade, grabbed an apple, and walked back to the 26-mile mark to wait to cheer for my nephew. By the time I got back there (conservatively the 4:45 mark), there was NO volunteer directing racers for the last turn to the finish line!!!! (For those who ran, it would be the right turn OFF the roundabout right at the end.) Being the nice guy I am, I stood there and directed racers. Because no one else was there, and the volunteer ditched, I stayed there well after my nephew had finished (and did not get to actually SEE him finish!!! THAT SUCKS!!!) Spectators were great... there just was not an abundance of them. I had no issue with picking up my shirt and goody bag (the day before the race), and I could care less about the expo and/or post-race party.

No Shirt, No Goody-Bag, No Award

Pre-registered a month before the race. At packet pickup was told they ran out of shirts. No shirt, and couldn't get goody-bag. My wife finished 3rd in her age group in the 13.1-mile race, and 6 weeks later, still no award. Emailed race director twice, but no reply.

Flat, pleasant variety, historical, friendly

I lived in Buffalo for a month in 1984 and have been to the area numerous times. A century ago it was once one of the greatest, richest cities in the US. No more, but remnants of this are all around apparent - if you (know where to) look. The city is now relatively dead - industrially for sure, and downtown on the weekend is a ghost town! It's sad. The course goes through a good variety of neighborhoods: changes in ambiance, lots of great architecture, and in much the first half, along the waterfront. Course is flat - the approach to the bridge by the Cheerios plant is about the greatest altitude change. Fortunately, that comes in the first half. :-) Footing is mostly good. Logistics were as easy as it gets; no stress. And lots of friendly people - running, accompanying, volunteering/helping out. Kudos! I had a wonderful experience (can't you tell?). Met and conversed with many friendly people. Despite running about 25 minutes slow, I was feeling mostly good about being there. I was towards the front as well, so I didn't have some of the problems others write of, but then, my expectations or demands were different. For example, I did not attend the post-race party and had no food - I brought my own food (anyway). But I can see that a good marathon SHOULD really have a variety of tasty, wholesome calories near the finish line, and a more festive atmosphere is hard to replicate on a city street. The Hartford, Connecticut marathon is better in that respect - the food for sure, in my experience. I had no problem with race registration the day before or with directions during the race. Course was well marked. Buffalo, the city of light, city of no illusions: I had a great day, even if I couldn't say that for my performance. But that's a good sign, eh?

very pleased

I'm not sure why everyone is complaining. This was my fourth time running Buffalo, and I am happy. Granted, I broke the four-hour mark. I did not have a problem getting my blanket at the end, and as for food, I was in no mood. Also, the other runners are always so talkative and supportive - who needs spectators? (Although, I am a person who runs for myself and not to get the praise of others, so I might be a little more uninterested in crowd size than other people.) In conclusion, it may not be perfect, but hey, what in this world is? And there are not many other places with volunteers who are so willing to jump in front of vehicles to stop them from going out on the course.

CHIPPAWHAT THE HECK????

My first time running the Buffalo Marathon, and it will also be the last. Very disappointed at the lack of fitness expo (one boardroom in the hotel). What a joke. I finished in 3:56 and did not get a mylar cape because they were gone!?!? Around 500 people came in after me and there was nothing to offer these people (post-race meal was a joke). The only positive comment I have was the location of the host hotel to the start and finish areas. They make for easy an transition for spectators and runners. This race did not live up to its website's billing. Stay away!!!!

Disappointed with 4th Buffalo Marathon

Last year I was very happy with the course change. The one thing that sucked last year was the congestion as the two races came together and 2,000 people tried to navigate a 3-foot wide park path. I had hoped they would stagger the starts for the two races, but this year was even worse with more people running. The wheelchair participants were so far ahead they were trying to go in the opposite direction on this narrow piece of asphalt. This is not a great idea. Once again I saw someone run directly into the unmarked posts (designed to keep cars out) at the path end. Other than the very rough road surface in many areas (and the congestion) the course was ok. Packet pickup was a joke. I was there 90 minutes before the race and they were out of large men's shirts? And on top of that I got NO bag? The ladies behind the counter were rude and had no clue what was going on or any explanation as to why we'd not get a packet. I know they are volunteers but was anyone there that was running the thing? It didn't seem like it. I convinced 4 other runners from my area to go with me and run the Buffalo Marathon because it was flat and fast. They were very disappointed and now joke that the Buffalo Marathon was a BM. I have to agree and will not be back. Cheaper isn't always better.

1st half marathon

I just want to say that this was a great course for a first-timer like me. I had not only a wonderful support (my boyfriend), but the support of the people who came out early Sunday morning to watch us. I fulfilled my two goals, which was great (1st: to get to the finish line; 2nd: to hit my predicted time of 2:30). I will agree that the 1st few miles were congested but I ran quicker than I wanted and bumped up my time for the last part of the course because I ended up walk/jogging in the end from fatigue. The drink stations were great, but a bit congested (ran into a few people and had to apologize while taking off). All in all, I thought that this event went well and that I would definitely run again next year (maybe a full). Hope to run with a lot of you again next year!

Fast course... NO FRILLS

The course was quite nice - very flat, a nice mix of park trails (paved) and city streets, old neighborhoods and pretty lake views. Got to the race over an hour before the start. NO T-shirts, yet I had registered 60 days prior. They said they would mail the shirt, but they refused to give goody bags to anyone not getting a shirt. I tried to follow up today, but there was is no listed way of contacting the director. Fast course, but I would never run it again.

Shuffle off to Buffalo

For an "All-American City," I was rather disappointed. The first half of the course is a cheater's haven with congestion (half and full both trying to fit on 6-foot park paths). I saw many cutting the course. No timing mats to catch cheaters. Full and relay should do the second part first to get away from the halfers. First, several water stations were ill-prepared to handle the sheer numbers. I missed several mile markers, especially in the second half. At the finish party, much of the food had already been consumed by the halfers, families and friends. Plenty of beer and cold pizza though. Even the packet pickup was a mess. Way too crowded! Not many spectators, considering the size of the community. Nice shirt and medal.

Good Race, Flat Course

Well run race. All of the intersections were well controlled. Course ran along waterfront and through nice residential sections. Very, very flat. I agree that the half should be started 1/2 an hour sooner to reduce congestion at the start. Also, better nutrition at the finish (oranges are a must). Overall, very good experience.

Another friendly and low-key 1/2 marathon

I ran the Buffalo 1/2 Marathon for the 3rd time in 2008 (first in 2006) and once again really enjoyed the experience. Advantage was that I knew the course this year, as it changed in 2007, which was good. It is pretty and along the waterfront and mostly flat. A great deal, as they give you 2 t-shirts (one tech) and pasta dinner and medal for $35 registration fee! This year, the expo was much bigger and had good bargains. However, I'd suggest having more than one checkout register. The lines were long. Packet pickup, etc. was very good and race-day weather was wonderful, mid 50s and sunny at the start. Not a huge amount of fan support except in the first 4 miles and the last 2-3 miles, but that I expected. The fans were excellent though, and very friendly and supportive. Would suggest having 1/2 marathoners start 20 minutes or so later, as the first 3 miles can be crowded with both marathoners and 1/2 marathoners. Overall, I'd do it again next year!

Perfect weather, nice course

Couldn't ask for better weather for a road race. The first half was excellent. I enjoyed the run along the waterfront, down to Tifft Farm and back to the city. The course then went through the quaint north Buffalo streets, around Delaware Park and back down into the city. Good support all along the way. However, to create a more fun party atmosphere, the half and full finish lines and post-race party would be better placed in close proximity to each other and down in the streets rather than the 2nd floor of the convention center away from the action. I didn't enjoy climbing down two flights of stairs after running 26.2 miles.

First time - good experience

After reading comments about previous years, I was very nervous about getting off-course along the way. I am happy to say the volunteers/police were great at every turn and intersection. The first couple of water stations were not prepared for the runners, but after that they were great. There were not a lot of spectators and about 1/3 of them were not even clapping, but in their defense, I am not fast (4:49) so they may have been clapping as long as I had been running and they had the option to stop (I didn't). :) Overall, it was a good experience and it looks like they have made great improvements. The apples at the finish line are not enough, but I only had a 10-minute car ride home, so it was fine for me. I just felt bad for people who had to hurry to check out of a hotel and travel without anything more than an apple. Thanks to all the volunteers for the support along the way!

Flat, pretty, not great for slow runners

Smallish race with about 750 marathoners and 2,500 half marathoners. The 2008 course was beautiful, with a good number of miles next to Lake Erie and the marina, as well as stretches in downtown and through some good parks. Water and Gatorade were reliably provided and adequate in quantity. Technical T-shirt provided was EXCELLENT. Weather was great. Results were accurate and made available on time. However, this race was not friendly for slower runners. While I was lucky to have finished before 5 hours, those that finished after had to run in traffic. Prize distribution was after 4:30, which did not give enough time for many runners to even complete. Results were not recorded after 6 hours of start. Crowd support and general awareness about the race was limited. Overall, quite a good marathon.

Big bang for the buck!

This is a well-run small marathon. Cheap entrance fee includes 2 shirts (1 technical shirt) if you sign up before April 1st, pasta dinner, pizza, beer, pop, assortment of chips and water at the post-race party. For some reason, this year they only had water and apples at the finish, but the post-race party is right next to the finish line, so no big deal. My first Buffalo on the new course. Liked it, but it was lonely after the half is done, as with many small marathons. Not a lot of crowd support but the people that were out were great and the volunteers were excellent. Lots of room at the post-race party, which was also great - no lines to get anything. Weather was perfect this year; I loved the switch to 7:00 start. Wanted to run a little better, but still PR'd, so it's a good course for a PR. I'll continue to run it for as long as my legs allow. Super course for a fast 1/2, or if it's your 1st half, with much more crowd support than the full.

Buffalo puts on a great race

This was my second time running Buffalo, and again I wasn't disappointed. What drew me in the first year was the low entry fee. But other factors have also contributed to me coming back. A nice flat course, small size, and easy entry to and exit from downtown added to my favorable experience. Packet pick up, though small, was well organized and to the point. Also, the free pasta dinner a few blocks away from the Hyatt was appreciated. The day of the race brought perfect weather with light winds and temps in the 50's, I believe. The course was well manned and marked and course monitors kept cars at bay while we were running. Hats off to the Buffalo police for their balancing of runners' and citizens' needs. And this year key turns were manned. The finish was nice, with your name announced and medals presented as you finished. The party at the convention center featured good music, refreshment, and good awards ceremony. As a seasoned marathoner I recommend this race over the mega city races such as New York, Boston, and Chicago. The low entry fee, ease of logistics, and good organization make Buffalo a great choice for a spring marathon. I will be back in 2009, and I have to say emphatically, "Thanks, Buffalo!."

Fast and Flat

Overall, good experience. The host hotel, Hyatt, was great - they allowed for late check-out and were literally feet away from the finish line. The course was VERY flat - maybe you could call the area around mile 7-10 a "hill," but that was it. Fast and flat, and you could PR at this one. Shirt was nice - a simple tech shirt with "Buffalo Marathon" on the corner, and nothing else. I like that. Kudos to the race director - I registered and was unable to run in 2007; he graciously let me defer my registration to 2008. Thank you, John! Small marathon, so no big crowds, which I personally like. Running alongside of Lake Erie was cool. You couldn't ask for better weather. To the guy at mile 21.5 - thank you for the oranges! And for offering to drop off my gloves and broken waist fanny pack until after the race - that was nice! My only complaint was that this is NOT a race that is mentioned much in the papers, TV, etc. The papers didn't say boo about it the day before. Around mile 15, I was along the race course and was honked from behind by a car. This older lady was asking me to stand aside so she could drive by - AND THIS WAS ALONG THE RACE COURSE!!! I shouted, "I am running a marathon! Get off the course!" Anyway, she passed me and a race volunteer got her before she honked at anyone else. If you are looking for a no-frills, get-the-state-of-NY-out-of-the-way (for the 50-staters), this was great. I enjoyed it.

Good Race - No Frills

Course is pancake flat and scenic. Adequate support on the course for fluids, though absolutely no extras (one stand had oranges - period). Course well marked; volunteers/police helpful. Worst finish-line nutrition I have seen in 15 marathons... water, weak Gatorade and apples. Nice shirt; decent medal. Once and done for me, though it was an overall positive experience for the price.

Walked 1/2 marathon; beautiful weather/course

Perfect weather, flat course, and the waterfront scenery is great nearly the entire course. Really liked having markers at every mile. Appreciated encouraging cheering people scattered throughout. Two complaints: not enough port-a-johns - only 7 or 8 at start for 1,600 people, and maybe 4 on the 1/2-marathon course. Also 2 water stations closed before I got to them. Hey people, the walkers might not be as fast as runners, but they cover the same distance.

ROOM FOR GROWTH

Race-day registration was unorganized and the ladies working the tables were misinformed. This could be solved by posting two signs: PRE-REGISTERED and RACE-DAY REGISTRATION. In regards to the 1/2 marathon: The course narrows just after the one-mile mark and follows a serpentine route along the lake. Having too many runners in a small space is dangerous and the condition of the roads just added to the problem. In addition, a cyclist split the runners on the bike path as he was traveling in the opposite direction. Solve these issues by starting the faster runners first or re-evaluating the route. Also, if the route was semi-clear of gravel, sand, and other debris, it would be appreciated. More restrooms would also be a big benefit. If more people are available to work some of the water stations, it would be a plus. It's hard to get water when only two guys are working one area. Will I run Buffalo again? Yes. I like the city, the people are friendly, and the scenery is nice. The previous comments can be true of other marathons as well, but I hope Buffalo can improve on those issues. One final thought: THE BUFFALO MARATHON COURSE IS NOT FLAT.

Course is too tight

The course is flat and fast, but there are so many people at the start, this it was slow and congested until in the 6th mile. If the start line was more organized (runners grouped by times - as it should be for a race of this size), most of this would have been eliminated. I ran the half marathon, and IF the first half and the second half of the race course were flipped, it would have been MUCH better. All 2500 runners were trying to squeeze though a residential area, then a sidewalk that was 3 people wide at best. With slower groups running shoulder to shoulder, it was very difficult to get by anyone and through this part of the course with any kind of time. By the time the pack thinned out, the course was wide enough to handle the initial traffic flow. The course is listed as "scenic." I'd call that a stretch, at best. There are lots of beautiful places in Buffalo, and the only place that this course showcases that is beautiful is the 1-mile stretch along the waterfront. The rest of the course goes through downtown, an old, rundown industrial section, and on an on/off ramp of an expressway. The mile markers were on small signs at the side of the road, and with the congestion, the first one I saw was at Mile 4 - these would be better if they were larger and raised higher. The fan support was great, and the support staff (water stations, police, start/finish line staff, and registration staff) was top-notch. Finally, they ran out of shirts at check in (except for Mens small). I pre-registered 2 months ago - you'd think they'd have enough shirts for people who registered in advance, and have to mail out shirts for people who registered at the last minute. All in all, the experience was OK - about what you'd expect for the price. I used this race as a tune-up for another marathon later in the season, and will probably not run this race again unless there are a few changes made.

1/2 Buffalo Marathon - nice race

The half makes a great first race. The scenery along the waterfront is beautiful, the course is FLAT, and race organizers and volunteers were terrific! My only complaint was that there were so FEW port-o-lets that there were lines of 4 to 8 people at the few on the course. Otherwise, great. Crowd support was super in the beginning and awesome at the end, with them announcing names of finishers as they crossed! Not much in the middle but the volunteers certainly made up for that with their cheering! Nice race, nice people, nice place.

Not a bad, small race... logistics could be better

I've run this race before, and will again. It's a prettier course since the improvements in the route, avoiding a lot of twists and turns, but the medals are still second-rate, they ran out of Mylar blankets on a cool day, and the finish line food options were water, Gatorade, or apples. What's up? The after party had more options, but if you were in need of sugar or something more, why not some oranges or bananas at the finish?

I have run this marathon twice, and will be running it this year for the third time. The cost is low, the course is fast, the water stations are serviced by awesome people, they allow my kids to cross the finish line with their dad, and the event overall is a blast! What else can a 36-year-old, broken-down, ex-hockey player ask for? Thanks to the organizers for all the fun you have provided for me and my family. DO NOT change a thing.

2nd Buffalo 1/2 Marathon; another good experience

I ran the Buffalo 1/2 Marathon for the 2nd time in 2007 (first in 2006) and really enjoyed the experience. For a bargain cost, you get 2 high quality race shirts (cotton and for registering early). The course this year had changed somewhat to go along the Waterfront, which was nice, although I liked the old course somewhat better as there was much more crowd support in the neighborhoods (and last 3 miles net downhill). Packet pickup, etc. was very good and race-day weather was much better than 2006. Not a huge amount of fan support except in the first 5 miles and the last 2-3 miles, but that I expected. Overall, I'd do it again next year!

Too small

This was my first marathon, so I don't have much to compare it to regarding organization or course selection. However, fan support was sparse after the first 8 miles, and after 2 hours of running, the field was had thinned considerably. Additionally, I was stopped by a police officer after running for three and a half hours and was instructed to get off the course because I hadn't finished in time. As it turns out, he thought that the race had started two hours after it really did. I actually only had about six more miles to go. Finally, the host hotel was completely unable to accommodate the number of people coming into town. I would not recommend it for a first race. It's better for the seasoned runner who is looking to do an early season race.

Its a nice race, but could be better

On a scale of 1-10, I give it a 7. I knew there wouldn't be many spectators, so I won't hold that aganist it. But miles need to be marked accurately. Two mile markers were minutes off - 1 way long and 1 way short. When adding those mile times together, it's still a pace faster than I was running, leading me to believe others were marked incorrectly as well. Also, in the 1st half, with 2,000 runners on the course, mile markers need to be higher than 2 feet off the ground. They are easy to miss. On a positive note, number pickup is a cinch, the hotel was nice, and the pasta party and post-race stuff are great. The shirt, although not a technical shirt, is still of high quality. Traffic control was perfect, and water stops were well stocked. I was a little suprised to see positive comments on the weather. The race was 65-70 degrees with 90 percent humidity at the start. Those are not exactly great conditions for a marathon.

My first, but not my last!

I ran the half-marathon as part of training for a full marathon. I picked Buffalo because it is relatively near Pittsburgh, despite the sometimes mediocre reviews from previous years. But I was really pleasantly surprised! Everything was well-organized: registration was a breeze, the past-dinner was great, and in the morning the start went really smoothly. I didn't think there was too much clutter with the full and half-marathon running together, but I was relatively at the front of the pack, so maybe it got worse later. The weather was really great, despite the fact that it was pouring with rain the day before - it was somewhat overcast and cool, but that is exactly what you want for a race. Drinks were available at regular times, and there were many helpful people handing them out. When I reached the finish, there was plenty of food: bananas and oranges. I'm sorry to hear it ran out later on. All in all, a great experience!

An Excellent Experience

This was my third marathon, my first being the Nissan Buffalo last year. I ended up not finishing last year's due to weather-induced severe dehydration. This year I qualified for Boston, so of course I'm happier, but also I have to say I think the course is improved. It seems flatter than last year, and traffic was very well-controlled. The quantity of spectators wasn't immense, but those you saw were very supportive (particularly by the Marina). Come try it - the price was right and you might just get a PR like I did!!

Very nice race

I see that a lot of people are complaining about the lack of food at the finish. That is incorrect. I finished in 4.5 hours and there was plenty. There was fruit, bread, pizza, yogurt, etc. The problem was that there was no signs pointing out where it was. You actually had to exit the finish area, back track past the finish line (avoiding the runners who were in their last 1/10 of a mile) and then enter an unmarked building. I love the new course, but agree some of the early mile markers were off. For a small marathon, these guys do a good job.

Nice things come in small packages

This was my first Buffalo Marathon and I have to say I enjoyed my experience. I got to see a city I had never been in before and a flat, fast course to beat the boot. Nice loops by the water were a great touch and the trip through Delaware Park added to my favorable impression. The aid stations were well stocked and every couple of miles. The post-race party was OK but the pasta party was superb and was free. The ONLY problem I had with the race was course directions. There were 4 places where I had to ask someone NOT associated with the race which way to go. But this race, with its low entry fee, good organization, and nice course, is definitely worth coming for. Thanks to the organizers for putting a time limit on the race. In this race I didn't have to contend with walkers, unlike many other races I run. I am looking forward to coming back next year EVEN though I ran a slow time for me under great conditions. Again, hats off to the organizers and see you in 2008!

PERFECT DAY FOR A RACE

From last year's comments, I had very low expectations. I felt the course was very well marked. Except for being packed like sardines with the 1/2 marathoners through the waterfront condo area, the course was great....

Pleasant little race

This was my second Buffalo Marathon. I enjoyed this race very much. I thought the new course was better. There isn't much crowd support. Usually there wasn't any. However, the pockets of the course that did have support really helped out the runners. Traffic support was a lot better this year than two years ago. The police along with the volunteers really seemed to take their task seriously and were very nice when we ran by. Pick-up for the race packet was also improved. It seemed more streamlined and efficient. The expo is still pretty small. Not too much to see there. One thing that I didn't care for was the lack of food and drink at the finish line. Two years ago there were fruit drinks, bananas, and crackers at the finish line. This year there wasn't anything except water. Even then we had to hunt for it and found it under a table in the back of the finish area. I wish that next year there would be some bananas or something for finishers. I live locally so I only had a ten-minute car ride home to re-fuel. I didn't bother going into the convention center because a few years ago there wasn't anything left when I got there. I finish races anywhere between 4 and 4 1/2 hours. I felt bad for the people who came from out of town. Speaking of which, I ran for a few miles with a very nice woman from Maryland. So I just wanted to say, "Thank you" to her for making the miles go by easily. Overall, this is a nice race. I'd like to see a larger expo and more support at the finish line but for the small entrance fee you can't complain much. I'll definitely run this again next year.

New course is very nice

Ran the half. I liked the new course. We didn't have to bus it to the start, and the host hotel was great, as were the start and finish. I will be back in 2008.

Very Sweet!!!!

This was my first and definitely not my last Buffalo event. I ran the half marathon and would like to say, "Thank you for a well done job." First the positives: A well thought-out, fast course, nice scenery, good size field, nice awards, excellent pasta party and post-race party, nice size expo for a smaller race, and local folks who were out along the course. Overall, an excellent event. My only negatives are: Two of the mile marks missing in the first six miles, and one or two of the marks may have been off a bit. But that is easily fixable. I could ramble on here but I think I said it best when I said, "THANK YOU for a wonderful weekend!!!!"

Great course; lousy mile markers

The first 5 or 6 mile markers seemed to be way off, which made it difficult to judge pace. The course itself was great. The first half travels along an interesting, old, industrial waterfront. The second half takes you through a scenic parks and some nice residential areas. The downtown start, finish and middle were great as well. I will definitely run this flat and scenic course again, but will remember to wear a watch that records distance and pace to avoid relying on the posted mile markers.

Had a great weekend in Buffalo

We stayed at the Hyatt Hotel, which was minutes from the start and finish and offered a good deal for marathoners. The Hyatt also allowed me a late checkout. The race went by the hotel at the halfway point so it was easy for family support. The free pasta meal was a surprise and the atmosphere was great, as it was well attended with a DJ. The course went through downtown Buffalo, by the lake, through parks, and by a golf course and affluent old neighbourhoods. It had a few hills but nothing too bad. The aid stations were well supplied and attended. Crowd support was strong in the expected areas. I enjoyed the course and found it very interesting to run. All turns and intersections were supervised. The early start at seven was ideal, as it got warm by the end of the race. Congratulations to Buffalo for holding a successful marathon. I have never been to Buffalo before and enjoyed all aspects of my weekend. I enjoy marathons that provide a host hotel close to everything, taking many of the stresses out of your race.

Getting there!

Based on comments from the 2006 event, 2007 was a marked improvement. The expo is not much more than a packet pickup, and very cramped, but the RD went out of his way to help me with a couple of things and was very accommodating. This race has very easy logistics: abundant parking near the start/finish; the host hotel is nearby; the moderate field size minimizes starting line hassles; and the after-party is right at the finish line. The course is relatively easy, and scenic. Other strong points include good traffic control, and good post-race food and drink including beer! Areas for improvement: Move the porta-johns from in front of the start line; place the mile markers accurately (mile marker 3 was 1/4 mile off! How can so many races fail to get this simple thing right?); and a technical shirt would be nice, although I acknowledge that the race is a bargain and that may jack up the price. I would run this race again.

fast course; no spectators

This is a very small marathon, with a fast course. The spectators that do show up are extremely quiet - I had to yell at them to get them to cheer. Delaware Park is very nice and I would suggest running the whole marathon in and around the park. A trouble spot for me was that the marathon shut down after 5 hours; I ran in under 4 hours but felt extremely bad for the 100 or so runners who had no support on the course. I would suggest that if you can't stay open for 6 hours, don't organize the event.

Change name to Buffalo Half Marathon

Since there were almost 2 half marathoners/relay runners for every marathoner, maybe this is better off being a half marathon. First half of the course was nice, except for the logjam when all the half marathoners combine with marathoners on a 3-foot-wide bike path. Maybe a 15-minute head start for the marathoners would be a good idea? Course would be better off being a lakeside loop with different start times (maybe the half starts 1 hour later?); the party after would be better.

A great, smaller race

This was my first time running a half-marathon, and I'm very glad I did it. I chose it because of the date, and the fact that I live in Buffalo. The course was beautiful and fast. The spectators, though lacking in numbers, were all enthusiastic. I'll definitely do it again next year!

Scenic, organized and fun

This race is getting better all the time. Incredible value for the money with 2 t-shirts, a pasta dinner, and party after all included. The new course is mostly waterfront. Congratulations to the organizers for the course improvements. Marshals, police and/or race volunteers were all organized; no danger of cars in the way.

For locals and sub-4 marathoners only

After running more than 200 marathons, this was one of most disappointing events I've participated in. The in-training t-shirt, free pasta party and low entry fee were the only positives. Directions to the events were minimal for out-of-state travelers. The streets were still open to traffic 30 min. before race start. There was no bag drop until about 5 minutes before the race start and then runners were told to just leave their bags on the ground. The first water was at 5K and then it was difficult to predict when you would get more. The mile markers weren't accurate. Around 4 hours, the course "marshals" disappeared from many of the corners and runners were on their own. There were no street markings at all, but luckily some runners had carried course maps and some helpful spectators told us where to turn. If the city won't allow paint on the roads, they could use chalk or flour so runners wouldn't get lost. The website said the course would close at 6 hours, but the course was opened to traffic before 4 hours and we had to move to the sidewalks. We had to dodge cars for the last 2 hours of the race. Unless you are a local and/or a fast runner, skip this race. There are plenty of other New York state races.

Great Course - Poorly Marketed

I have attended numerous marathons with my daughters, who have run Chicago, Nashville, Orlando, and Indy, just to name a few. This was the first time that I ran and I enjoyed the route and the weather was perfect. The route was mapped well and traffic was not an issue - the workers did a great job. The spectator support was poor but I think this has a lot to do with the way the marathon was marketed. Also, at the finish line they didn't even take the medals out of the little plastic bag - it's the little things that mean a lot. I think with more advertising and local support the participation would increase and bring in business to downtown. Also could not get a long-sleeve t-shirt after the race and I was told that they were not available online. I was surprised that the t-shirts did not list the sponsors. Where were all the sponsors at the expo?

People of Buffalo made race great

This was my second Buffalo Marathon and I really enjoyed it. The new course was ok. I think you get the real feel of Buffalo by going by the old mills, the navy yard, and of course the home of the Sabres. What really made this for me were the great people who came out to support the runners - from all the little kids with their hands out for high-fives to all the kind words of encouragement. The family around marker 23 or so giving out oranges and watermelons was great. Thank you to all the people who were giving up their Sunday to hand us water and tell us which way to go. Thanks to the Buffalo police who were great as well. Thank you, and God bless you, Buffalo - you were great.

Don't waste your time!!!

Course was boring for the 2nd half of the half marathon; hardly any spectators; only an orange or apple with water or Gatorade at the finish line; and the expo was small, crowded and unorganized. Overall, not impressed - recommend not wasting your time.

Just wanted to say thank you to all of the volunteers at the 2007 Nissan Buffalo Marathon. You guys and gals provided guidance on where to go on the course (at every turn) and you offered encouragement to the runners as we ran by. Thank you very much and hope to see you out there again next year.

Overall a good race and a great course!

The course was great. I liked the urban, industrial and suburban settings. I liked looking at different scenery all through the race. There were ample water stations which allowed me to not carry any water with me. The beer at mile 25 was classic. I indulged. Parking was easy and close. I also liked the race starting at 7:00 a.m. We did not have to deal with the heat, but it is a good idea to start earlier this time of year. We also finish an hour earlier. Hat's off to the Buffalo City Police and Sheriff's Department. They kept traffic under control for the entire race. THANK YOU! I was VERY disappointed with the food at the finish (bottle of water and an orange) and the medal. A corporate-sponsored race (Nissan) should give a little more. Marathons a fraction of the size of this one have given out much better food. The first 4-5 miles were a mystery regarding the placement of the mile marker signs. The markers could be seen (except mile 1), but were not placed one mile apart. This made it difficult to pace. This was a training run for me, so I ran for the fun of it and this challenge did not bother me. There were several other runners around me who made comments about how upset they were. For runners wanting to qualify for Boston, this would be an issue. Fan support was spread out but very positive. Overall, the marathon was a good one and I had fun. Hopefully my schedule next year will allow me to race it again.

THE CONTROL BOARD MUST HAVE ORGANIZED THIS EVENT!

As a parkside resident and fan of the city, I thought our neighbors were awesome! Loved the Elam Place crew and Parkside cheers. However, going out towards the small boat harbor looking at all those condos and retail stores and passing Bass Pro and the beautiful beaches and parks was truly overwhelming! Ooops, must have been having an endorphin attack.... Geez, could you take the out-of-towners through a more BLEAK part of town?! Traffic control really pissed me off! For that price I expect to be provided safety! I should not be behind the police cars (4 of them across Richmond) with 80+ people still behind me (11-minute mile pace). I caught up and reminded the officer that it would be nice if at least ONE car was behind the runners. I have a thing about almost getting hit by a van backing out of a drive on Richmond and telling cars to "go around me." My running partner got hit up for change at mile 25 from some panhandler dude!REALLY! Last bummer: all that was left were loaves of bread and some off-brand diet pop for my post-race party... BREAD AND WATER! HMMM, like I said, the Control Board MUST now have taken over our local road races as well as the economic freedom of the working class! When you see them at the Corporate Challenge in their HUGE tents with catered food and limo service, wave and say hello!

Buffalo Wants Runners

I did the half and not the marathon, but did run Boston a month ago. I let it go too late and did not get a reservation at the race hotel, the Hyatt. This hotel was impressive and well situated. We stayed at the Double Tree and were very impressed. The staff could not have been more accommodating. Additionally, the Anchor Bar was great, especially a wonderful waitress named tracy. The course is flat and fast. Except for the beginning, the first half of the marathon is the half marathon. The change from Boston was more than welcomed. The circus atmosphere is something to be experienced, but it takes its toll. I incorporated the race as part of a weekend jaunt up to Toronto. The mile markers before Mile 7 seemed to be off, but the scenery is great. The merge between the marathon and half marathon seemed to be more than the bike path could take, but the people were great and I was treating the first 8 as a casual run, and the last 5 as a pace run. For $35, I think there should have been some time of Gu stop for the half. I'm not sure about the marathon, because I did not run it. The water and Gatorade were fine. Also, the medals for the half said, "marathon" and not "1/2 marathon. " I did not notice that until I was almost in Toronto in the afternoon. I like the color of the t-shirts, but the letters are too small. Someone will have to be in my face to read it. I had a great time, but the mile markers before Mile 7 need to be straightened out. I'm still trying to figure out my splits. I'll probably be in Boston next year, so I would not be doing a marathon the next month, but I may be looking to come back for the half. From the previous year comments, the race is moving in the right direction.

First-Time Halfer

Well, the Buffalo Half this year was my first long run. I really enjoyed the course until we got to about mile 7 or 8. From there, it was very boring and in a somewhat rundown area. Another thing I was not pleased with was the lack of food at the end. After running a distance like that, you need food to replenish your body. The one piece of fruit and water are not enough. I found the race fairly organized with no major problems. I had a great first experience and I hope to come back next year to run it again, if not the full. :)

my first & second half-marathon

I originally chose the Buffalo Marathon for my first half marathon because I'm from Buffalo. It's a fast course but there isn't a lot of spectator support! When there is, it's usually in Delaware Park and at the finish line. I have only experienced perfect weather on race day, but I love the heat! It is hard to adapt to though, considering that the majority of training is done in mild spring weather. My only suggestion would be to get more of a crowd! Buffalo has a GREAT community and there is no reason more people can't come and show their support.

VERY HOT AND POOR COURSE MARSHALLING

I traveled from the UK to run this race after a good run at London, and was looking forward to a good run on a flat course. Mixed views on this race. The expo was a little disappointing as in stores, etc. - more just a collection point. However, the staff were helpful, friendly and welcoming. Pasta party was a good value for money - well organized and a good meal. Race day... where to start? A false start to the race (what is that about?!?!), then off I set in the lead pack to be sent the wrong way in the first 2 miles, before losing control of my pacing, as the mile posts were the wrong way, and I had to run into the rest of the mararthon field who had been sent the right way. I then spent the next 10 miles running on my own as the field spread out; the heat kicked in and that started to take it's toll. There was lots of water, etc. on the course - can't moan there - but on three to four occasions, marshals forgot to tell me to turn left/right as I carried on a good few yards down the wrong way before being told I had gone wrong. Frustrating and time consuming. The course itself is flat and fast, but crowd support is spread out - there are long periods with very little support, although there are pockets of strong support to lift you. I would recommend the race and hope the organizers learn their mistakes from this year's course errors (for example, putting up a few signs to tell runners where to turn and having a few more alert marshals would be appreciated and would go a long way). The heat was the biggest factor of the day - sadly that can't be controlled, which is great for spectators in the park, though awful for the runners. I had a bad run and was hoping for a much better time than I got. I have good friends in Buffalo and would run this race again. Lastly, the website could do with a face lift as a lot of info on it is old and appears to only have the years and date of race changed.

1st Time Half Marathon at Buffalo 2006

I really enjoyed the 2006 Buffalo Half-Marathon, my first 1/2 marathon ever! Having read 2005 reviews, I wasn't expecting that much, including any food at the stations (I carried my own), good course directions, or much crowd support (mainly due to lack of publicity, as the people of Buffalo are the warmest and friendliest around). However, I was pleasantly surprised overall. It definitely was uncharacteristically warm and humid (in the mid 60s and 1 hour into it, low to mid 70s), but the crowd support WAS wonderful (hoses, candy, oranges, etc. and more folks out than I expected), the course was clearly marked, the police provided good traffic control, and the announcer saying your name and hometown at the finish was great! I was proud to come back to Buffalo and run a very pretty, VERY flat course through Kenmore, Delaware Park, past the Albright Knox Art Gallery etc. The only hilly parts were a bit through the park and right after the Knox. In fact, the last 2-3 miles are downhill! For $35, I think the easy packet pick-up, nice cotton T-shirt, Gatorade and water at the stations every 2 miles, and food and water available at the finish and in the post-race party were great. I would suggest to the organizers the following: - more publicity to get Buffalonians out and cheering - closing off the streets better for the marathoners behind us half-ers - energy snacks at the water stations - a listing of restaurants and attractions for out-of-towners to highlight Buffalo and its offerings I thought for a small-city marathon it was quite good overall and has great potential, especially for the price. When I told him, my husband, who has run several elsewhere, agreed with me. I'm definitely thinking about Buffalo 2007!

We loved it!

My husband and I have been running marathons and half marathons all over the country from small to large, and we can safely say this was one of the best. We had none of the problems mentioned below, and thought the volunteers and spectators were fantastic. Neither traffic nor directions were a problem. There was food at the finish line - fruit for sure. We thought the FREE pasta party the night before was great, and the after-party was light and casual. We would certainly run this marathon again.

Low entry fee, but you get what you pay for.

I was initially attracted to Buffalo by the low entry fee and ability to sign up at the last minute. Overall, I would have to describe the event as "rinky-dink." If you want a first-rate marathon, pay the first-rate price and go somewhere else... really. Positives: - Great pre-race dinner included with entry fee - Easy access to the start and parking - Flat, fast course (if it's not hot!) - Check-in was accurate and efficient Negative: - False start at a marathon? You gotta be kidding me! - Leaders off-course before the second mile? Are you serious? Where was the course worker at this major intersection? This was extremely frustrating. I went with the leaders. The first half of the pack went one way and the second half went the other (right) way. Shouts of "you're going the wrong way!" are not what you want to hear when you are shooting for a PR. Found out later it was a loop, but could not dial in my pace until after mile 4 because mile markers were set for the other direction. - Organizers, you NEED BETTER COURSE MARKING! Put a little paint on the street at the turns or put out more signs!!! - Very little crowd support if you want/need that sort of thing. - No real expo, just a couple of vendors. - Two medical folks at the finish didn't seem like enough to me... especially on a hot, humid day. - Not particularly scenic if you like that sort of thing. - Post-race food was definitely lacking; looked like my local 5K... cut up bananas and oranges. Other stuff: - Stayed at the Holiday Inn one mile from the start/finish and it was excellent; very understanding about a late check-out so I could grab a shower before heading home. - Heat and humidity were terrible, but nobody can control that! Maybe have the race a little earlier in the month?

Buffalo needs this marathon.........

As a life time resident of Buffalo and a second time runner for this race, I agree with others comments that this race is very scenic. The people of Buffalo are wonderful and supportive. BUT, the race is poorly advertised and the turn out scarce especially if you finish in the five hour range. The course was not marked and we ended up having to turn around and back track at the last 1/4 mile. NOT something you want to do at mile 26!!!! I do appreciate the work that goes into planning this event. God knows, Buffalo needs good PR and this marathon could do that for the city image if a few changes were made.

Get what you paid for

I'm not going to reiterate what everyone else said, but here are some new comments. Website was a disgrace. It still referenced 2004 & 2005 in some spots. It also appeared never to be updated since January. Finish Clock was not properly placed. The clock was not close enough to the finish line, so the finish line photo taken by the official race photographer DID NOT show the finishing time. Maybe that is not important to a veteran runner, but to a first timer it most certainly is. I disagree with previous writers - I thought that the marshals and aid stations were sufficient. Overall, for $40 it was fine.

I had a good run!

This was my fourth Buffalo marathon. The course has changed a few times since the first time I ran it in 1996 (my first marathon). I was worried when the day turned out so warm since all my training was in much cooler conditions, but I ended up having a great day. THANK YOU to the people in Kenmore who brought out the hoses! I think this really helped to cool me down and was much appreciated at that point in the course. Number and spacing of water stations was fine for me. I really needed those pretzels around 18, so thanks little girl! I found traffic control much improved. But after reading comments, I do remember points where there was no one to show the way. It was not a big deal to me since I am familiar with the city and the course (Bflo is my hometown). Thanks for fixing the conjestion bw halfers and full M at the aid station in Delaware Park. Not a big fan of out and back loops (Lake, Chapin) but it was okay. Love the cemetary and Franklin/Linwood portions of the run. Kinda miss the finish in front of City Hall. Keep plugging away Bflo organizers. Thank you for a fun run!

So much potential....

I've run this race several times before as a relay runner and half marathon, and for those events it was wonderful. It shows off some of the best parts of Buffalo and since there is still a crowd, directions are not a problem. Also, by the time you finish, there is still something left at the party. However,as a marathon, this left a lot to be desired! The slower runners who were out there the longest and needed the most assistance received the least...sparse water/Gatorade as early as Kenmore, poor coordination/organization (on pace for a 4:30 at Lincoln Parkway, we were told by a policeman to get on the sidewalk); no police at all at Bidwell/Elmwood (the poor volunteers were being abused by the public); no direction at all toward the end (I saw people going 3 different ways around Niagara Square, as there were no marshalls and no directions!); nothing left at the Convention Center when we finished (assume many friends/family of racers cashed in on the free food, leaving nothing for the slower finishers.) In short, the slower marathoners, who paid more than the half marathoners and probably really needed more assistance on such a hot day received the fewest services. I suggest that the course be made a double loop, and that the half marathoners not start until at least 1.5 half hours after the marathoners, so that everyone on the course gets the same aid, and the volunteers are not spread so thin.

This race is not for back-of-the-packers

After reading some of the other comments already posted, my Buffalo Marathon race experience feelings are similiar to those of 'Where's Waldo?' I was hoping to finish in 5 hours but because of the heat, I was not even close. I would have never found my way through the many twists & turns of the course without the help of runner Peggy Hillery who was the woman with the great, loud whistle who helped keep many of us back-of-the-packers on course. A volunteer did press a map into my hand, but it was really hard to run in a strange city and find our way with just a map. Crossing the busy streets was a challenge too. On the plus side, we did enjoy the pasta dinner the evening before. And the course does show off the best sections of Buffalo. The volunteers and folks along the course were very supportive although they became sparser as the morning went on. A word about the Hyatt--we were disappointed with just about everything there Nine of us from Pennsylvania stayed at the Hyatt. Some checked in as early as noon on Saturday, others had to wait till after 6pm to get into their rooms. And one of our group of runners from PA had her car window smashed in the city parking garage across from the Hyatt. But the race directors can't help those types of things. We won't be back to run Buffalo again.

This is a fast flat course!

First a few comments about what others have said. First, I am happy that I found no rodents in my car prior to the race. Second, this course is pancake flat, by far the flatest of my 14 marathons. This is a PR course as long as you don't need crowd support. I don't. First the good: 1) Great prerace pasta party. Free for runners and $5 for guests. My family and I (three kids and wife) ate for $8.00 and it was really good. Even if I don't run Buffalo next year, I may come up (from Pittsburgh) for the cheap (and tasty) eats. 2) Very fast course. Unfortunately, the heat eliminated the possibility of running fast this year. I suggest that Buffalo move the race to early May. 3) Nice small race which I like. 4) Stay in the Hampton Inn which provides free breakfast and has nice pool for the kids (mine are 5,8,10). 5) Close to Niagara. Good for family time before and after the race. Now the bad: 1) Traffic control was not good. Some guy in front of me almost got nailed by a car that the police officer failed to stop. They need better controls in place to handle this. I finished under 3:40 and it was becoming a problem then, I assume it only got worse for the folks out on the course longer. 2) Not enough water stops after 15. It was really hot and the organizers should have considered more water on the course. Also, no GU on the course. 3) Course closed too early. It seemed that the 5 hour runners were already on the sidewalk. The website said there was a 6 hour time limit. You would expect that this meant you didn't have to run on a sidewalk and stop at each intersection. 4) Website had no updates at any point. This was my 14th marathon and I would do this one again because it is a fast course and I think a PR course as long as the weather cooperates. Even if I don't run Buffalo next year, see ya at the pasta party.

Beautiful Course Unseasonably Steamy

Fifth Marathon and do not understand the negative comments. I must have been at a different race. So easy to park, register, get to the start line. Quite a contrast from some of the bigger marathons. Second time running B-Lo and the volunteers were out in much larger numbers and every corner was manned. The Heat and humidity were absurd but who could plan for that at this time of the year. The course is perfect for a PR if not for the weather. The runners were very friendly and encouraging 'touching the toe' of the Indian Runner's Gravesite was cool. Wish the Buffalo News covered the Marathon better and at least listed the results of the Marathon as most cities do. Perhaps put together a packet for out of town runners so they can find the many excellent down town restaurants and bars especially up Elmwood. Great Marathon and very underrated.

a nice experience

I ran the half and enjoyed. Thanks to the race director and all. I took family and made a weekend out of it. I will for sure be back next year, but will run the marathon in '07.

excellent well organized marathon

This is an excellent small city marathon and I highly recommend running it. This was my fifth Buffalo Marathon and I will be back next year. The event was well organized in all aspects from registration through the finish line. Parking is easy to find near the start/finish areas. The course is a good one, passing through various neighborhoods and scenic areas in Buffalo. Some particularly nice spots are the lakefront area in the first 5+ miles, a loop through a scenic/historic cemetery between 9 and 12 and the straight, slightly downhill stretch from 25-26. There are not many crowds of spectators along the course, which is fine with me. The ~600 marathoners and ~50 teams provided a good number of runners without any tie-ups or crowding. The aid stations were well spaced and I found that there was adequate water/Gatorade, even for the hot day this year. Support personnel, including course marshals, aid station workers and especially the police at road crossings were outstanding. My favorite part of the race was at a cross-street around mile 23 where a policeman, who was letting traffic pass, saw a look of concern re the cars on my face and said with a big smile 'don't worry, I've got you covered and I won't let anyone hurt you.' That was just what I needed to brighten up the last few hot miles. I didn't attend either the pasta dinner or the post-race event so I have no comments about them. Overall, I think Buffalo is an excellent well-organized, relatively low-key event and I recommend it.

hot and humid conditions made assessment hard

For the money this was a good marathon. The heat and humidity made it feel like July. The police directing traffic seemed exacerbated by the drivers. Book your hotel room early; I didn't and ended up staying 40 miles west of Buffalo. This is a B.Y.O.G. (bring your own goo) marathon. As I opened my car trunk before the start of the race I saw a huge dead rat. I'm happy to report that I didn't face the same demise.

Where's Waldo?

Everyone paid $45 for this race. Too bad only the fast runners got all the benefits of this race, including directions on the course (except for the lead pack when they went the wrong way in LaSalle Park). This race is advertised as a 6-hour time-limit marathon. With the heat slowing us down, I knew that I would be asked to go up on the sidewalk and I didn't have a problem with that. However, I did have a problem with the lack of course markings! There were so many people wandering around looking to find which way to go after that Delaware park and someone running behind us kept whistling and pointing the way for us. Why were there no markings for out-of-town people as to where they were going? At one point, 2 people went one way and 4 people went another! I was skeptical of this race from the very start because of past negative comments about traffic. Traffic was not an issue, especially through that cemetery where there were at least 20 race people pointing the way. Use these people for the course and use cones or signs in the cemetery. HELLO?! ANYONE LISTENING??!! Nothing like making a long day even longer by having to ask spectators where streets were. Maybe a little arrow at corners?! How about a cone? We finished within the 6-hour advertised time limit with no photographer, little water and Gatorade (was that even Gatorade?), and the party had beer, apples, and stale bread. Big whoop. $45; 6-hour limit; post-race party - stick to your promises.

Don't do it.

You have to be kidding me. This was my first ever marathon and I was let down. +'s: 1. I finished. 2. I didn't have to travel to get here. -'s: 1. You needed a map and compass to find your way around. 2. No food or medical station at finish line. 3. Organizers closed race course earlier than planned. 4. After Mile 20, they switched from Gatorade to "Gatorade." If anyone is planning on running next year, save your money, time, and energy. They cut every corner possible to save money. I ran the Disney Half and Rock and Roll Half.... Plan on those... a million times better.

A good first marathon

This was my first marathon, and I had read the comments on this site the day before, and was admittedly a little nervous. That being said, I think a lot of the criticisms were a little harsh. Maybe they'd made improvements this year, but I never had a problem following the course. The spectators were as good as you'll find considering Buffalo isn't as popular a spot as NY or Chicago. North Buffalo's sidestreets made for a tough miles 14-18. And I agree with the previous comment that more water stations towards the end would've been very helpful considering how hot a day it ended up being. (near 80 degrees 4 hours in...I thankfully finished in just under that) But for $40 entry, the amount you get definitely makes this an enjoyable experience. It was not a problem for me, but if you don't do well with crowns in roads, you will not enjoy much of this course. A pro though is that there aren't many elevation changes, and there's a nice comfortable downhill miles 25 and 26. I will definitely run this race again.

the marathon needs work

I was disappointed at the lack of direction on the course. I had to make sure I keep people in sight so I wouldn't get lost. I was given a map to help out, but when you're running the last thing you want to do is pull out a map and see if you're heading in the right direction. The weather was hot, and even though this can't be controlled, the amount of water and Gatorade on the course can. When I came out of the cemetery they were already out of the Gatorade. When it's hot, things need to be out on the course to help out. Sorry but I wouldn't run this again. I do thank the volunteers that were out there for their help and support and the people with hoses to cool us down.

late stage traffic control obscenely bad

I timed this race for many years before retiring from the timing business. Each year, but especially in the last 5 or 6 years, I've heard complaints about traffic control in the last 4 or 5 miles. I didn't dismiss them -- in fact I always passed them onto the race director -- but I didn't know for a fact that there were serious problems, because I was never out there myself. Now that I've run the race (at a 5 hour pace) I know for a fact that traffic control after 20 or so miles (roughly beginning after leaving Delaware Park for the last time ) is staggeringly, dangerously, bad. Non existent, in fact. Delaware/Nottingham on one's own? Crossing Elmwood at Bidwell without any marshall? Very dangerous. All the traffic circles past Elmwood were unguarded. At the left turn off Richmond into Summer, a couple of people were doing their best, but it wasn't very good. In fact they were on the sidwalk, not in the street. Niagara Square? Nothing! This race has an explicit 6 hour time limit. That being so, it's the race administration's absolute responsibility to maintain course safety for 6 hours. If they cannot, and it seems pretty clear that they can't, then they should put the time limit back to 5 hours. As I said, I've heard these complaints for years, and now I know for sure that they're true. However -- I hasten to say that traffic control up to about Lasalle/Delaware (in Kenmore) was really excellent. After that, it became progressively worse, hitting bottom at Elmwood/Bidwell and beyond. When I got into the convention center to look for some food, there was nothing left. Again -- I finished at 5:13, and if there had been a 5 hour cutoff I would be making none of these complaints. But if you're going to let people finish to 6 hours, then at least make sure there's some food for them.

Not bad, some interesting scenery

The race was pretty well marked, I had no problems as previous reviews had said regarding finding the marathon course. The 2006 race was VERY hot and there were not enough water stations at 14-18 miles and 23-25 miles. UGH! Generally everywhere else there was enough water. The Buffalo cemetery and other areas were actually kind of hilly; I was suprised at how the course is really not that flat. The volunteers were very nice and I was suprised at how many of them had to stand at the various intersections for hours, so the organizers have to be commended for that. It was a neat marathon to run; I would recommend it not for a PR (go to the Erie FLAT Marathon instead), but it had interesting surroundings with the old cemetery and Delaware Park. This was my third marathon, and I wouldn't likely run this one again (the memory of the heat will last a long time, but the organizers can't be faulted for that!).

Good course--very warm day

Website never changed; no updates, no email contact (eventually found email here on marathonguide.com). Phone call the only way to get answers. No way to check entry on website. Promised 'training' T-shirt arrived six weeks late. Low entry fee. Beautiful cotton race T-shirt. Very small expo. Efficient packet pickup. Race day was the hottest day of the year to that point. First six miles down by the water were cool, but as we left the downtown area the temps climbed (because we lost the cooling effect of the river) and there was no way to stay on pace. Almost everyone near my time of four hours was walking lots by mile 15. There is some shade on the course, and that helped. Nothing much to do about the heat, but why not start the race earlier this time of year, say at 6:00 or 6:30? Water and gatorade was only every two miles and on a day like this it probably wasn't enough. Crowd support was spotty, but great at the finish. Names announced as you approached the line. Host hotel had great rates, and I just walked out of the hotel to the start line. That was easy! Biggest beef: I went to my hotel at 11:40, showered and changed, came back to the party at 12:45, and all the food was gone. It was advertised that the party would go on all afternoon. Well, maybe the beer, but no food. No one at the finish told us to go upstairs in the convention center or we wouldn't get anything later. Almost nothing is open in downtown Buffalo on weekends except for a few bars. The city is very quiet and deserted. Traffic control was excellent. The pasta feed was great. Overall, good value for a smaller marathon.

very nice marathon with a lot to offer

I just finished 2006 marathon I was very pleased for a small marathon this definitely exceeded my expectations. This was a well organized marathon with a great course. The volunteers were exceptional. This was a last-minute decision and so glad I made it. The pasta dinner was free for runners and only $5 for guests - unbelievable. The food was very good and plentiful. It seemed the townspeople really are proud to be a part of this event. I will definitely recommend this race to everyone. Just want to say "thank you" for a great time. Just one thought: a few more water stations at the end of today's run; it was very warm but otherwise you guys did a great job - keep it up!!!! Also we met a couple from town that was very friendly and informative. I just wish I had gotten their names, though I do have their email address. Thanks.

Hoped for better experience.

I just completed the 2006 marathon today. It turned into a very warm humid day, and a bit of a death march for several people. It did start at 7:30 a.m., but as the sun rose it became sweltering and few were acclimated to the conditions. Obviously organizers can't control the weather. What they can control are adequate course marshals, clear course markings, adequate aid stations, and mile markers you don't have to search for. In my opinion and that of my four friends who also completed this marathon, Nissan Buffalo failed in these areas. The most glaring example of the many problems I experienced occurred as I approached the first loop near Lake Erie, we could see several runners go left (including the leaders) around the loop, while those of us back aways decided to go right. No marshal and no marking at this obvious fork in the path. Those near me turned out to have made the correct guess. Thus we passed the lead pack going in the opposite direction out on this loop. Granted, since we ended up back at the same point, it's likely we all ran the same distance. However, that this was allowed to happen is inexcusable, and indicative of the sloppy organization and often confusing nature of this race. Aid stations need to be more numerous, and extending longer than a few tables, particularly on a day like today. Longer stations would allow runners to keep moving and still be able to grab multiple cups. There were also several intersections where only one marshal was provided, but since they were so often busy dealing with traffic, runners needed to get their attention to find out which way to go. Marathoners have enough to deal with without needing to worry about going off course. Apparently the critical posts regarding previous years are valid and have not been properly addressed. My friends and I will not run this race again, nor recommend it to our running group, which is a shame since we live within an hour, and the event has potential to be so much better. Sorry if this is harsh - I do appreciate the work that was done by volunteers, police, etc. - I just think organizers need to step up the quality of what they're offering if this race is going to turn its reputation around.

A great experience at my 1st marathon.

This was my first marathon and it was a great experience. The spectators, while not plentiful, were very helpful and whenever the course changed, someone pointed you in the right direction. I could not possibly have asked for any better weather as well. The only complaint that I had was that at several points in the race, there was two-way traffic with some of the faster runners running in the opposite direction, which kind of freaked me out. Otherwise, the course was nice and not too hilly and the run through the cemetery certainly broke up the monotony. Some of the other events like the post-race party were a little lame, but the race itself was great.

First one, and a great run

This was my first marathon and I was very pleased. The people running with me were fun and supportive, the volunteers stood in front of cars so we wouldn't get hit, there was water everywhere, and while the support was a little thin they were always cheering hard for everyone. I would say a great starter and I plan on doing it again. And for those wondering, all the people cheering in the last streach makes the whole thing worth while.

Just a little more attention to detail

I ran the half marathon. I was surprised that the course was not more closed to traffic, especially on Kenmore Ave. I ran the full Air Force Marathon last year. It would have been nice to have bananas/oranges at the stations. I had no problem with the Cytomax though. I was surprised that the Brightroom photo of my finish didn't show the clock. Maybe they sent out a newby to photograph the finish line.

Nice job with the sponsoring hotel.

To all of those who complained about there being no gels, next time bring your own. I think the overall marathon was well done. A little hectic at times with the traffic, but nothing to really complain about. My biggest complaint is: how can the the hotel that is sponsoring the event not allow a late check-out? Are you kidding me? Here they were going to charge you an extra $50.00 if you're not out of the hotel by 12:00. That's great if you can finish under four hours. Next year I'm going back to the Adams Mark, who offer a late check-out for those who are running the marathon. Maybe they should be the sponsoring hotel next year.

Decent overall - somewhat disappointing at times

You couldn't have asked for a better day for a run! This was my first marathon. A couple of good things and a couple of bad. Good: - I finished the first (of many, hopefully) marathons. - Volunteers were friendly. - The people that did come out to cheer the runners on actually did cheer. It is nice to hear positive comments when you're hitting the wall at mile 24. Bad: - I read on the website the ChampionChip was being used but was given no answers to questions of where and when to pick the chip up. It was by dumb luck that I heard an organizer talking about the Chip pick up 30 minutes from the start of the race. - Somewhat of a harrowing experience running through the 'S' curves after the cemetery and having angry motorists yell at you for delaying their Sunday drive. Possibly a different route to Delaware Park to avoid this? - No food or power gels at the stations. Glad I decided to bring my own. I want to personally thank the kid in Delaware Park for the Gummi Bears he gave me. They helped! - It could have been real easy to go off the course. I had to ask a couple of times which way to go. - Maybe organize the finish line better? After a marathon, I don't think you have to ask where food, water, and medals are. Overall, a good value for your money. This could be a great little race if it just had a little more organization. I'll run it again but I think I will try to gravitate more towards the larger races from now on.

well organized marathon

I qualifyed for Boston for the first time at this marathon, by 5 minutes, finishing in 3:55. The course was essentially flat and the temperature stayed comfortably in the 50's. I had no problems with any of the aid stations, or with the many street crossings. The volunteers were excellent and attentive. The police timed the cross traffic perfectly, so I never wavered in my pace. As expected, the spectators were sparse, but supportive. The course was scenic. The expo and pasta dinner exceeded expectations for a small marathon. Cytomax was an 'unknown' electrolyte replacement drink at the aid stations, but the lemonade flavor that they used worked fine. As in all marathons, it's best to carry your own carbohydrate replacement gels/GU. They announced my name and home town as I crossed the finish line. The post-race food was great: fruit, yogurt, bagels, pizza, soda, beer... This was my 24th marathon, and I would recommend it highly, especially as a Boston qualifier.

One of the top 10 values in marathoning.

WOW, what a great time & great deal! Where else can you sign-up for a marathon for $40, 16 hours before the race? Top-notch pasta party with Molson (donated sauce from a top Italian restaurant) FREE for the runners & only $5 for guests and $3 for kids. The post-race party had pizza, yogurt, donuts, salty snacks, salad & fruit, Molson's & pop to drink. The race course is fast and makes for a Boston qualifier. It is a good idea to carry your own drinks & gel if you need to drink & eat something specific. No marathon is perfect... but Buffalo has a lot to offer!

Well organized but course needs work

The race was well organized. I thought that there was a good amount of support at the aid stations. The course needs some work. There was too much traffic to deal with. The intersections where we were running into on-coming runners was a first for me. Crossing the on-ramp on Delaware to Route 33 with no offical there to slow traffic was nuts. The first 13 miles were laid-out well. After that there was too much traffic to contend wtih.

so-so marathon

The Cytomax (cheap substitute for Gatorade) did taste like crap. Knowing this ahead of time I placed Gatorade at the park entrance. The Colvin entrance/exit of the park was hellish. I, as well as a friend of mine, almost went head-on with many half-marathoners. One word for the organizers: cones. We also thought it a bit redundant to have someone at every intersection in the cemetery and no one at the corner of Franklin and Tupper. Please close off Delaware Ave. at the S-curves. It's a bit frantic when cars are trying to pass you onto the on-ramp of the 198. One last thing: Ditch the wheelchair race. Most of us were by them before the first turn and many others overtook them by LaSalle Park.

Great potential, but some work to do

This marathon (and associated half) has the potential to be excellent. The expected weather at this time of year is good, the course is relatively flat, there is a gentle downhill in the last couple of miles, and most of the course is scenic. Having read last year's comments about the disorganized marshaling, I was a little wary, but hoped the organizers might have improved things. Unfortunately not. In the half marathon, just before mile 3 there was a turn that was not marshaled at all; the policeman on the motorbike realized his mistake when the second pack of runners off the lead was already 30-40 seconds up the road. I lost 20 seconds -- people in front of me lost at least a minute. The police marshaling the event were not completely attentive to what they were doing. As in previous years it seems there was little publicity for the race. Signs on the blocks leading up to intersections to warn drivers of the approaching race would have helped.

Second marathon does not compare to my first

On Sunday, I completed my second marathon in my home town of Buffalo, NY. My first was Disney in January this year and was AMAZING. I knew going into it that Buffalo was going to be a lot different than the one is Disney. The course was very nice - it should all the good parts of Buffalo, such as Downtown, the Waterfront and all the old mansions. If I wasn’t from Buffalo and I ran this race, I would have thought Buffalo was a great city. It was also a beautiful day. The course was pretty easy; the only hill was really through the cemetery. The only problem that I really had with this race was that it lacked some organization. I am not a fast runner, so I was not in the front of the pack. There was a group of about 10 of us and when we hit mile 24, there was no one to tell us where to go, no directions, no signs - so we got lost. How we found this out was someone's boyfriend called them on their cell phone and told her that we missed a turn. We managed to get back on track, but to get lost at mile 24 is very discouraging. And at almost all the refreshments stations from mile 15 and up, they were packing up and leaving. And we saw orange peels all over the ground at the one station but there were none for us by the time we got there. Apparently everyone forgot about the people who didn’t run as fast as the others. And there were still people behind me too. Buffalo did have good points, don't get me wrong. The course was beautiful and fast, the weather was great, at the finish line they were announcing EVERYONE as they finished, and the atmosphere and fans were great. My only real complaint is that not everyone can run a marathon in 3 hours. For some of us, actually completing a marathon is all that we do it for. There should be volunteers and police the entire race telling people where to go and handing out beverages. <!--No one should pack up early. Oh and they got all the ages wrong on the website - I am 26 not 36!-->

Great course but needs more aid stations

This was my first marathon but I have completed many endurance races. This course was great! But there were 4 places at busy intersections where there were no volunteers or police. I saw one runner almost get hit by a speeding car. Also there are aid stations only every 2 miles and they do not carry fruit or salt snacks...I am a big guy and sweat tons! I, like many other people, need more than water and energy drink. The course had one spot where you may get confused where to turn, it was just after the 20K pt. Overall great race!!! I will do it again!

bring your own food and sports drink!

The course is absolutely beautiful and the weather was perfect: low 50's to start and upper 60's at finish. Not many fans, as you'd expect from a small marathon, but those out there are spunky and several along the course were even handing out water. Negatives: NO GATORADE. It wasn't until the first water stop at the 5K mark that we found out some off-brand electolyte crap was the only fluid besides water. It tasted awful and since I hadn't trained with it, I was worried about stomach problems the whole race. Even BIGGER NEGATIVE: NO FOOD UNTIL MILE 24!!! Folks, you have to be kidding me. Thank God I brought a couple gels or I'd DNF. Anything you eat at mile 24 is a waste - you can't even absorb it in time to get a finish boost. The website said you'd have fruit and Gatorade! Is it that hard? Post-race party was good; lots of food and beer (!). Great race to run for the scenery and weather; just count on about as much support as you'd have on a long run in the country (i.e., none...) and go prepared.

A perfect Memorial Weekend Marathon!

The weather conditions were absolutely perfect this year! Sunny, 50's-60's. The course had great scenic routes for a Memorial Day run. The Naval park on Lake Erie for example. The Forest Lawn Cemetery offered shade and beauty and the city of Buffalo had some awesome architectural buildings! From a running standpoint, the course was relatively flat and the downward slope to the finish was the best part. I would call this a race to run for a PR or a Boston qualifying time. I will be back! The volunteers were great and I enjoyed the music at the pasta dinner and at the finish line. I was worried I might get lost, but the directions given by volunteers and on-lookers relieved that worry. The water stops were well prepared. I would like to see bigger crowds to run with at this marathon. It has a lot to offer!

First marathon... I want to run another

Being that this was my first marathon, I had no idea what to expect. Buffalo was a nice place to start and I can't wait to run another. The pasta dinner and post-race party left a little to be desired, but I thought the course was relatively flat and scenic. The cons were few spectators, and water stops seemed sparse towards the end.

pasta dinner, mile markers

My wife and I got the last salads, and there were many people behind us. Bread also ran out. Please have enough food for the dinner this year, you should have a good idea on how many people are attending. It is a very important meal for many of us. Have a professional set the mile markers. I run a very steady pace but I felt I was up and down. It is not that difficult to have someone set them accurately. On the plus side it is a nice, flat, and scenic course.

Very good first marathon

This was my first ever marathon. I'm did this marathon as part of my 18th birthday, and wow, this was my best birthday so far! I loved every minute of the race! My goal was 3hrs 30 mins; I shattered that my 27 minutes! The weather was awesome, 65 at start! The volunteers seemed very helpful! There were many water stops. Volunteers were great at directing me on which way to go! Course was really flat, couldn't be better! The only negative was at one point we got caught up with the half marathon and behind some slower runners, but no biggie! At the finish, a volunteer immediatly came over to assist me. Had bad leg cramps, a doctor was there to help! Great race probably will be back in the near future!

26.5 miles of disorganization

The course was 0.3 miles too long according to my GPS system (and my husband's) - even in the first five miles. A third of a mile wreaks havoc on your pace when you're shooting to complete the race before being asked to move to the sidewalk. The volunteers I came across not only weren't helpful, but I actually had two of them complain to me about how long they'd been out on the course!! I would recommend that if you're going to provide medals through the 6 hour mark, there should also be support through that time. Another disappointment was that the chips did not register at the start such that the chip time was not used. The after-party was supposed to go until 4 pm but when we arrived at 3:20, it was all packed up with only a few pitchers of beer (no food, no water) in an empty convention center. I loved doing the marathon as a personal achievement but was disappointed by this race and the organization. In the future I'm going to stick to bigger races with better lasting support.

This one could be good if only...

Positives - course was nice except for perhaps a little too much in the cemetery. The long straight coming back was helpful but going around the traffic circle a half mile from the finish sucked. Need to consider tweaking the route. Negatives - oh, where do I begin??? Let's see... 1) Hotel - never stay in the 'theatre district'. I was awakened both nights I was there at 2 am to the sounds of the techno dance bars. What do they do, open the doors for the last hour they're open just to see who can make the most noise? It's awfully hard to run a quality marathon when you've gotten a total of 6 hours sleep in two nights. 2) The pre-race dinner was the worst. Come on, how do you run out of BREAD for God's sake? Plus no salad? I saw plenty of beer but I'd rather have had something a little more conducive to running a good race. 3) MARK THE DAMN COURSE - God love the volunteers but if they don't tell you which way to go, they're useless. the majority of the ones at this year's race were clueless. This course has too many turns. I lost count of the # of times I'd come to an intersection, shrug my shoulders, and ask 'Which way?' - twice I actually went off course. I spent way too much energy worrying about WHERE I was running rather than HOW I was running. I was so pissed off at 20 miles I thought about chucking it all and quitting. 4)Finish line has got to have more than just water. This was by far the worst finish line experience I've ever encoutered. Oh, and just what was that crap in the cup? I took one bite and thought I was going to hurl. This COULD be a good marathon; however until the race organizers get their stuff together and make some major improvements, there's no way in hell I'll be back.

I would run this one again.

I enjoyed this marathon. It was my second, I wondered about the accuracy of the mile markers in the first half, I seemed to be running a bit fast for me. I did finish in my projected time, however. The volunteers and traffic control were very good. Not an easy feat when many drivers do NOT want to wait for anything and there were a lot of cross streets. There was plenty of water throughout and the course itself was ever-changing, which I like. The post-race party was difficult to find and not my kind of fare. I am a yogurt, banana, bagel, WATER (or coffee and cinnamon buns!) kind of gal. I enjoy a small race and so am used to small crowd participation.

Great race, needs some fine tuning

This was my 3rd marathon (besides Flying Pig, Marathon in the Parks) and overall, it is almost equal to the others. This was a return for me to the place I went to college, so I'd visited most of the areas of the run - which was great! Running through Forest Lawn Cemetary on Memorial Day weekend was touching and strangely uplifting. The mile markers were haphazard at best (might want to measure them EXACTLY next year) only water at the finish, and the crowd was tiny (apathy reigns). Weather was beautiful and I didn't PR, (ran the Pig 4 weeks earlier 28 mins faster), but for 35 bucks a great course and a free pasta dinner! Other runners were friendly and overall I loved the run (I coasted the last half, joked, socialized, and avoided the impending wall). I'll run it again it. It was a fast course, but hard to judge your pace with messed up markers!!!!

Overall - Disappointment

I do not know where to start? Actually, I do not know where I'm going! I've run Chicago, New York last year, Miami this year, and thought I'd give a small marathon a chance - big mistake. If not for the Falls and the Casino, I would have gone to the Sunburst Marathon in Indiana the following week where five (5) of my friends all PR'ed. Maybe I wasn't fast enough (I wasn't) but I did get to the half before the cut-off time of 2:30, at least I think I did. Mile markers were so off that some miles I would pick up 2 minutes, and the next mile I would lose 3, and it was like that the whole run. Eventually by about mile 18 (I think), my watch supposedly showed me that I was about 13 minutes ahead of my sub-5:00 pace (yippee), but then the worst thing that could ever happen, happened. I stopped to water a bush, lost the runners in front of me, and was suddenly lost. For what seemed like hours running, stopping, backtracking, and turning around in circles, I found mile marker 21 and waited for a friendly face to show me the way (left or right). I finally hooked up with 2 runners who were smart enough to bring the course map along, but that got us lost also at certain intersections. Anyway, after that ordeal I finally found and trudged my way across the finish line into the waiting arms of my wife (just kidding) - but she did finish 45 minutes ahead of me and PR'ed - received my medal and then proceeded to get lost trying to find the convention center and the post-race party. 'It just wasn't my day.' High Points: I brought enough GU, Motrin, and a water bottle. The run through the cemetery and lakeshore were nice, two shirts was a bonus, and the trip almost cost nothing except for what I lost at the casino. Someone recommended not to stay in the city because nothing was open. Well I stayed in the burb's (Cheetowaga), and everywhere was closed for the long weekend also. Low Points: Mile markers, no start mat, disorganization, my poor finish time, still looking for the post-race party. Thanks to: The police officers (they did a great job), the volunteers and spectators who stuck around, the little girl with the rabbit in her arms which told me to turn right rather than left, the lady in the SUV that offered a couple of us water and Gatorade and directions on 3 separate occasions before we lost her too, and the opportunity to run in a race that will bring back memories to share with others for just $35.

Terrible race for slower runners

After finishing the race, I returned to my car to find lost racers wandering the course with no support. I stopped at a gas station and bought supplies for runners and drove around asking anyone I saw if I could help. I gave out over 20 Gatorades and waters, several pain killers and many Gu's. MAKE THIS AN OUT-AND-BACK COURSE. Have your volunteers able to switch from street sides so they can cover more ground. If you have a 6-hour cut off time, keep volunteers there to help. Post the course so runners aren't lost. Tell slower runners to bring their own support via a bike person, etc. I would never encourage any one to run this race.

Good, however could improve

I will start off with the positives. With today's ever price expanding fees, this event is a great value for your dollar. They also have a kid’s race for the little ones. The race shirt, poster and medal were great. The course is relatively flat & fast, however there is a gradual incline leaving downtown which you can feel later on. Also about the 10K mark you cross over the finish line and run underneath the banner. Change that portion of the course; it is unfair to do that to the runners. Course control was great by police and volunteers never had to worry about traffic. Negatives: The pre-race meal ran out of salad and bread. Have plenty of food to fuel your runners. Massages were disorganized - I was 2nd in line and waited for 20 without being seen. Only H20 at the finish area. Have some bananas, bagels, oranges, etc. Yes, I know this was all offered inside the convention center and done rather well, however there needs to be some at the finish. Crowd support from the neighborhoods and city was totally lacking. Get the city more involved. Overall B-, however this race has great potential. Directors should look at other area races and how to improve i.e. Hartford, Philadelphia.

Not for slow runners!

This was my first marathon. YEAH - me! I ran great time the first half, but by the second half my pace slowed considerably. Yikes, which way do I go? No signs, no volunteers, no people, no arrows - how discouraging. Several times I had to ask for directions. Thanks to my personal cheering section and thank you to those few volunteers that did stay behind. I wasn't going to give up. I was almost there. (I think?) Hey, I did get a cool medal.

Buffalo: Only one negative

Thought both the 'in training' and finisher's T-shirts were very nice. Course was quick. Crowd support was either very good or very poor, depending on the section of the race you were in. Plentiful water/aid stations (every 2 miles starting at mile 3). The people handing out oranges were angels from heaven. The only negative was the absolute DEARTH of food immediately following the race--basically granola in a half-ounce cup & cups with small portions of water & soda were all that was available immediately after finishing. FOUL. BIG TIME FOUL. How about some cookies, fruit, chili, pizza... almost anything.

Not one I would do again, any time soon.

I have run 9 marathons and have to retire for a while. This was my last one. Unfortunately, various events left me disappointed: if you are going to have a chip time spend the extra money for a start mat, volunteers should never ask you to stop to let traffic go by, and don't let runners get lost on the course. If you don't want slow runners, set a cutoff time that will not attract them to your race. I came in at 5 hours flat. The course (the part I was actually on was nice), the weather good as well, but if I could get my money back, I would. SSY- Ft. Lauderdale

I'll Be Back!

This was my first marathon and was able to finish under 3:45. My family and I had a great time and will be back next year. Here are my positives and negatives. Negatives: 1. Mile markers off... my pacing was screwed up from the start. 2. Shirt... I wish the shirt was better, maybe long-sleeve and bigger wording. I'm proud of my finish and would like to wear a shirt that people can actually read without squinting. 3. Chips... please have a mat at the start next year. 4. More city p.r... I encountered many angry neighbors and drivers. Thanks volunteers and Buffalo Police for doing a great job handling people the best you could. 5. Mile markers on the course map... Next time it would be great if the miles were marked on the map so family members can meet the runners at certain spots. Positives: 1. Great course... mostly flat, scenic and tree-lined. 2. Nice weekend to have the race... My family and I visited the falls the next day. 3. No big traffic hassles or getting around the city the evening before. 4. Nice choice of hotels... We stayed at the Raddison. The location was great but our room was dirty. 5. Nice friendly running crowd from all over... I was able to get through the first 17 miles with a great pack. 6. Price... I will be willing to pay a little more next year for improvement of the FEW negitives. 7. Many more positves but not enough space or time to write. Overall this is a great race for a first-timer or a BMQ (hopefully me next year). I will be back for many years to come seeing that this is the only upstate spring marathon around. Thanks Buffalo Marathon staff and volunteers for a great job... cheers!

Great small-city marathon

I give this event high marks for organization and course. The few spectators along the course were friendly and supportive, but this is not a run with crowds lining the course. This year (2004) was the third time I have run Buffalo (1999 and 2001 previously) and the third course iteration. I liked this version the best yet. It had a good mix of city scenery including residential neighborhoods, commercial areas, an expansive cemetery and a park. Packet pick-up and staging for the start were outstanding, held in a downtown high-end hotel. It was nice to lounge in relative luxury before the run. The course was well marked and controlled. I think the best sections were around the marina near the start, through the cemetery and the last couple of miles back to downtown, the slight downhill was excellent. During the run, the people at the aid stations particularly impressed me. All were efficient and friendly. I finished in ~4:06, which is typical for me, and I felt the support was strong throughout the event. This marathon is good size for my tastes, ~700 marathoners plus ~50 teams, and an uncrowded route lets you concentrate on your running. I intend to shuffle off to Buffalo again next year for another go at a fine event...

Excellent Course, Weather

I really enjoyed the course and the weather was great. Volunteers did a great job. Why there were no port-a-potties at the start was beyond me. Also, the only fluid I could find at the finish was water. Would be nice to have a sports drink.

Nice course, no organization

The course really was a very nice course, however the organization takes away from what could be a wonderful day. They use ChampionChip timing without a mat at the start. Many of us wanted to start out conservatively so we went to the back of the start. We then walked up to the line only to find this out. Mile markers were all over the place (I know I didn't run a 5-minute mile). Water stations every two miles or so, if you are lucky enough to get water from someone or can safely make it to the tables. No food at the finish line; you have to walk to the convention center if you want some. Even the awards ceremony took forever and was unorganized. One person commented that if you run 4:00 or faster that this would be a great course... well, many of us between 3:20 and 3:30 found it less than appealing. This could be a great race with organization... I won't be back to find out!!!

The meatballs were great!

This is definitely a PR course, level the entire way. For $35 bucks ya can't beat it - including the pre-race pasta meal with the best meatballs. I saw a guy with a 'Joe Mana' shirt or something which must be the local Italian resturant that supplied the food. This was my 12th marathon and easily the best pasta meal, for free! The expo is short and sweet. I gave the organization 3 stars only because some minor traffic problems, no massage tent and no food at the end - I'm comparing to larger races - but still great for $35 smackers. The crowd support is light but great. The women runner's were phenomenal. I was with a group running 8:05's to 8:15's that strung me along. Another important rating for this course, all the women runners were 5 stars and some are even good runners!!! This Pittsburgher will be back.

Absolutely love it

Overall, I absolutely love it. - it's inexpensive - start/finish at the same place - this year weather was the best, can't be any better - it's spectacular, from shoreline through downtown, around a gorgeous cemetary, through typical American neighborhood and back to downtown - very nice. - spectators and volunteers were very friendly and supportive The only negative thing is the course was closed 40 minutes earlier than scheduled, at 12:20 not 1 pm as promised. It didn't affect me, though, so I should not probably say anything. Just keep this in mind if you are a 5-hour runner. Thank you, Buffalo.

Fast course, nice race

Overall, I had a very good experience at the Buffalo Marathon. This was my 7th marathon and I brought home a PR (by 8 seconds). Positives include: relatively flat, fast course; friendly volunteers and race officials; small size but big enough that you could find other runners at your pace; low entry fee; perfect weather. Areas for improvement: t-shirt is lame (raise the entry fee by $5 and provide a decent shirt!); traffic control a problem at one or two intersections; expo (only 2-3 booths); the city didn't seem to embrace the marathon as a key community event (e.g., limited media coverage). Bottom line: I'd run Buffalo again. This marathon is a very nice race that has huge untapped potential.

Great course, great weather, good traffic control

The course was fairly flat and well thought out with a slight downhill the last 2 miles. The traffic control was excellent. The only problem was the host hotel (Hyatt) seemed to be surprised that they had a crowd that weekend. Rooms weren't ready and had to stand in line 3 times 45 min each before I got a room that I reserved months ago. The start line was immediately outside the hotel, which was nice. I enjoyed the historical tour of the cemetery while running through courtesy of the volunteers. Crowd support sparse but enthusiastic. For the entry fee, this one's a keeper.

Perfect weather, nice course, no fans

Buffalo is definitely a good value for the entry fee. For $25 early registration, you get 2 t-shirts, a free pasta dinner, and a post-race party wtih free beer! The course was nice, although it got a little bit boring through miles 14-19 in the local neighborhoods. I loved the marina, downtown and cemetary sections. I have to agree with the previous poster about lack or organization for the slower runners. I was having an off day and suffering from dehydration and had a tough time finding an aid station. It seems like a lot of the volunteers packed up and left early. Also, I wish the race would switch to another race drink other than Powerade. I will probably run this marathon again next year.

I Agree - NOT FOR SLOWER RUNNERS

This was my first marathon and I finished in 5:48. I've only been running for a few months and wanted to prove something to myself (and visit the Falls). I was very pleased with the course itself - nice and easy, no huge ups and downs. Very scenic and pleasant - great weather too! My only complaint was that after the halfway mark (2:37 at the half), there was little support for those of us not yet finished with the entire race (even though our times were well within the limits). A handfull of us got lost in the residential area (Uclid) as there were absolutely NO markings on the road or at street corners - we had to rely on the kindness of residents to tell us which way to go. We ended up going several blocks out of the way and had to double back to get back on course. I don't want to complain as much as suggest that next year you put chalk marks on the street to point the way for the slower runners. The residents shouldn't mind as it will wash off quickly. We would not expect the volunteers to stand on street corners forever, so just some sort of markings would be greatly appreciated. Otherwise, it was a great event. Easy to pick up numbers, nice shirt, nice after party, terric volunteers, beautiful course. With a few more improvements, Buffalo will definitely be a choice destination for any marathon (or half-marathon) runner!!! Thanks for a great event!

Nice, well-organized race

This was my 1st year to run the Nissan Buffalo Marathon. I thought the course was nice and scenic and a good course for anyone attempting a PR. The weather was ideal for a marathon so I think the time of year was appropriate. The people support wasn't too bad for a marathon with under 1000 participants. The post-race party was decent, however, I would like to see more goodies... ie., cookies, ice cream. The Molson was a nice addition to the beverage lineup. All in all, it was a nice experience and I would consider doing it again, especially when you can do Buffalo in a fraction of the cost of Boston. Nice job!!!

Glad I shuffled off...

...to Buffalo for this one. This was the best course I've run so far out of 6. True, there were few spectators, but the volunteers and police did an excellent job and the day was perfect. If I'd have slept more than 1 hour the night before, I'm sure I would have PR'd. The course was very beautiful and very flat. The serenity of the park and cemetary and waterfront were ideal, and I loved the straightaways down the street, too. My in-laws are from Buffalo, so I had some insight into what to expect. I liked the city and for $35 the race was a real bargain. Nice shirt, medal, and goodie bag. Parking was abundant not more than 75 yards from the starting line ($4 parking garage, but definitely worth every penny). Water/Powerade stations were well staffed and there was Carb-Boom provided at points, as I recall. Overall, this marathon exceeded my every expectation - I'll be back next year hopefully to improve on my time and enjoy this great city in which to marathon.

Volunteers

As for the previous comment and being one of the volunteers we were instructed by the race officials that we could leave from our 19-mile mark at about 4:15. We stuck around for about 5 hours and even left Powerade there in cups for anyone else who was after that. I think what could help the runners in his situation would involve actually marking the course other than the map that was given out and the mile markers. We had several runners coming through our aid station asking where they go after they leave us. Next year if we run the 19 mile water stop again we are going to print maps to hand out to the runners towards the back of the pack. As for having to run on the sidewalks, that isn't the first time I have seen this.

Flat course, great volunteers

A great value. The course is flat and surprisingly scenic for a run around a metropolitan area. Even the pasta dinner was great. I cannot say enough good things about the volunteers. They were always helpful and unfailingly polite. The expo wasn't much but that is about the only negative I can think of. Overall a topnotch course with a superb organization. Well done Buffalo and thank you!

Great race for experienced runners

I picked Buffalo because I wanted to train in spring weather, but the race to not be too warm. So north I went, and Buffalo complied with 60 degrees and sunshine. I would absolutely recommend it if you are an experienced marathoner and want to improve your PR or qualify for Boston. Course is beautiful, flat, and not packed with tons of other runners. If you know Buffalo or architecture, you'll recognize 5 or 6 world famous buildings (Wright, Sullivan, Richardson) on the course. Pre- and post-race goodies are on par with major races, despite the tiny entry fee ($35, including pasta dinner). The negatives: -not enough runners to provide good pace groups for an inexperienced runner--I followed a faster group, burned out, and had to slow way down. Volunteer support dwindled for the slower runners. -not enough PR in the city--we had lots of angry motorists and confused neighbors--'what is this race?' -Very, very few spectators These are small things, though. If you're a faster runner (<4:00), trust your own pace, and are self-motivated than this is definitely one for you.

Empty City... Enjoyable Run

This was my first marathon, and the conditions for the race were perfect: beautiful day, nice breeze, flat, scenic course. The race was well-organized, and started almost right on time. However, the City of Buffalo left much to be desired--the downtown was like a ghost town. Almost no restaurants were open. In fact, my girlfriend and I were so bored that we headed back to the airport 4 hours before our flight in hopes of a place serving food! For anyone looking for a great race (but not the best city), run here.

Nice course, however other things need improvement

The course starts and finishes downtown. It takes you by the waterfront and through some nice neighborhoods, however the course out from downtown has a gradual incline that you feel later. The last 2 miles are the same into downtown, which is a decline that helps. Running through a cemetery was different, and Delaware Park is nice. Having to run underneath the finish barrier at the 10K mark is cruel and course should be moved off Franklin St for that block Positives: -numerous hotels close to start -post-race food in convention center -results posted quickly -cost $35, included dinner poster nice t-short decent medal -free kids race -good course control by volunteers’ police Negatives: -poor course map with no mile markers -a major foul up was newspaper and race website had wrong location of start -pasta dinner ran out of bread and salad -massage area totally disorganized was 2nd in line and still no massage after: 15 minutes -only water at finish, no Powerade, bagels, oranges etc... and I was in the top 10%. Overall decent race, worth the money, however race staff should look at other cities close by i.e. Hartford, Cleveland, Philadelphia to improve. Needs more city/community support. This race has great potential. B-

Great Marathon

Overall, for the money and size, this was a great marathon. Nice, scenic flat course with perfect weather. The areas I felt could be improved: expo could be expanded a bit and 'Buffalo Marathon' merchandise should be produced. Quite a few of the mile markers were off and most were hard to spot. More port-a-pots are needed. I couldn't find any port-a-pots at the start area and the ones out on the course were few, far-between, and didn't have TP.

Great small/medium-sized marathon!

I've done Boston, NY, Marine Corps, Disney, and others and this race rates right up there. I was able to park on the street a few blocks from the start with no problem. The course was well marked, flat, and fast. The weather was great. Water stops every few miles were enough. A few of the mile markers were misplaced, 23 in particular, but these were minor problems. The race is a great value as well! Thanks to everyone associated with this race!

Nice Course and a Friendly Race

This was my first 'smaller' marathon and I was pleased with the organization, course and post-race festivities. I didn't run a PR in Buffalo, but the course was scenic with only modest hills so I can understand how it is well suited for PR. The path by the lakefront and through downtown were very nice. There's not a lot happening in downtown Buffalo so traffic wasn't a problem. However, out in the neighborhoods, there were lots of testy motorists who were arguing with the volunteers or police, so I understand why one person warned me to be cautious at the intersections. Overall, I think this is a race to run. I liked the organizational ease of a race this size even if it comes at the price of fewer fans.

Great race weekend

After running Lakeshore last year, I was craving a medium-sized raced, run by professionals. I found it in Buffalo. Very well run, from registration to post-race party (free beer, pizza). Outside of inherent diffuculties that the organizers could not control (Buffalo seems a little 'barren'), the course was great (some waterfront, the cemetary was a nice touch, parkland, then enter the city to finish, which is where the spectators would be, if any were out), and the volunteers very helpful, and happy to be there. Expo was small, but had all of the last minute stuff I needed, and the pre-race meal was well done. Post-race 'party' a little quiet, but well stocked, and introspection may have been order of the day anyways. Well done, John, and all of your team... great job!

Flat, very fast, some organization problems

I just PR'd by 5 minutes and also qualified for Boston here, so I have good memories of the course and the friendly people. One volunteer stayed way past closing at the expo to register late-arriving runners like me (maybe they could keep the expo open past 6 pm next year). The course is very fast, not completely flat but no hills, just gentle inclines and most of miles 24-25 are downhill, which is welcome. Several organizational problems: 1) no chip mat at the start, just the finish. The chips were used only to measure gun time, so those in the back of the pack at the start don't get the benefit of using a chip. That seems really odd to me. 2) at least three mile markers were off, one of them at mile 3 when many runners are trying to settle into a pace. The mile three marker was only about 50 feet from the 5K marker, so it was probably too long. Later, I was running 8:15 miles evenly and hit mile 23 at 5:33, and mile 24 marker at 11:45, so something was way off. I also almost got bumped by a car at an intersection, and at one point actually had to run through a line of stopped cars to get to stay on the course. The volunteers were doing their best but there were a whole lot of intersections to monitor. Aid stations were well-supported, post-race party was great (free beer, even). Hotels by the race start were relatively inexpensive. Overall, for 35 bucks this was a great value.

A Job Well Done

This being my first marathon, I really did not know what to expect. But I must tell you, it was a job well done. I really enjoyed myself and look forward to running it again next year. I think it was a well planned course which gave you several different views of the city. And for the price, you couldn't beat it. Nice Course, No Organization

This marathon is on a very nice course, however, that was the only positive all day. I usually prefer smaller marathons and thought this would be great after reading last year's comments. What a disappointment. 1. Chip time - those of us who started at the back to start out conservatively found out it was only 'matted' at the end - so why bother? 2. Mile markers were way off and hard to find - to some people this is important. 3. While I knew that water would be every two miles I actually planned on getting some at the stations. PS. I don't mind running back to the table to get some - just don't like running into a person handing out water (they had turned around to talk). 4. No food at the finish line. Sorry water and severly watered down Gatorade don't cut it after you've run 26.2 miles. Yes, there is a post-race ceremony in a convention center you have to walk a ways find - and probably after you take the time to change. 5. Awards ceremony took way too long and was just disorganized.

Great value but...

Nice, flat and rather interesting course and enthusiastic volunteers. Great weather, and I had a great run. I generally like small marathons but there is lots of room for improvement when it comes to organization and support. 1. Organization - no port-o-potties at the start, despite saying there would be. Confusion about the starting place and time. Limited time information and confusing and difficult to follow signage in parts of the course. At parts toward the end, you are running in the park with non-competitors such as bikers, walkers, etc. These are major distractions when you are at your weakest. And finally, the water stops are every two miles even after mile 20. Although it wasn't too hot, you need to have them at every mile toward the end, if for no other reason than a distraction. 2. Support - as someone else mentioned, it was a ghost town in the city. In talking with a local guy, the city apparently does nothing to rally the community around this event and it shows. No signage about the race at the airport, downtown or even at the host hotel. This isn't critical to a successful event but it is something that makes it more special for everyone. My cab drivers both to and from the airport had never heard of the event. Apparently no TV or radio station to at least broadcast the event or plug it in any way. I'm not one of those people who needs crowd support but a couple of dozen people at the beginning and toward the end would be nice. Is there that much else going on in Buffalo that weekend? I've read others say about how it is a great value. And at $35, including dinner, it really is. But it reminds me of what my father always said - you usually end up getting what you pay for. How about charging $15 more and getting more organized? Buffalo - good, but you can do better.

Do NOT run this if you're a...

If you complete marathons in 4:00 or less, this is a good one: 1) Nice course 2) Good weather 3) Great value for the money If, however, you are a 'slower' runner, skip this. I was on a sub-5:00 pace and twice I and the other runners I was with ran the wrong way because the volunteers had left. I can't image anything more disheartening during a race than not knowing where to go when you're exhausted from having run 20+ miles... what a joke. Plus, I was forced to run on sidewalks even though I was ahead of the pace where the streets should have stayed open. I'm from Buffalo, and hoped to have a great experience... just started running a few months ago and was really looking forward to this. But this race was a complete disappointment for me because they simply didn't care about slower runners... I'm probably not coming back even when I'm able to do faster times.

Great job Buffalo

Great course. Flat as can be. Really scenic. Very fast. Great support and organization. Expo was fair. No fans; in fact, no people. Downtown Buffalo looked like Mars. No sign of life anywhere. Excellent PR opportunity. Highly recommend the race, not as high on the city. Maybe stay in the 'burbs...

Great PR Course

This is my fifth marathon. I PR'ed by 18 minutes. The weather and organization are both superb. I enjoy small/medium marathons and this is definitely one I'm coming back to.

The course is what makes this one special!

I just arrived back home after running the 2004 Nissan Buffalo Marathon just a few short hours ago. This was a great experience, one I was not really too sure as to how it would turn out. I got a great hotel room only a week ago and I registered yesterday with no increase in price than if I had pre-registered a month before. When I registered they gave my whole family complimentary tickets to the pasta dinner so we took full advantage of that and enjoyed every last bite. Oh yeah, there was the race too! Weather was spectacular as it normally is, apparently. This was huge for me as I had just come off of running my first Boston 6 weeks ago in a heat wave (temperature reached 90 degrees). So right away I was in a totally different comfort zone today. The course was quite flat and very scenic (waterfront, park trails, a beautiful old cemetary - very appropriate for Memorial Day Weekend, beautiful neighbourhoods and nice wide streets). There was decent interest and support from the community. All the volunteers were extremely friendly and courteous. Organization was good, although there was a little issue with the starting line being on a different street than what pre-printed literature indicated. Luckily, I happened to pass by the actual starting line on my way to where I thought I was headed. I don't know how many others may have been negatively affected by this. If you happened to start late (or just at the back of the pack) and thought it would not matter because your net 'chip time' would still govern this was not the case as a timing mat was only used at the finish line. All in all I would recommend this race to anyone at any level of running as you should not be disappointed with this marathon, with its sheer beauty and flat course. For me, it was an extra special day as I mananged to re-qualify for another Boston with my friends and family cheering me on. What more could a runner ask for. Thank you Buffalo! I will never forget you.

UNBELIEVABLE!

This was my 1st marathon and I thought it was great! The course was VERY scenic and pretty flat. The police at the traffic lights did a great job. There was one bad thing though. At the last 4 or so miles there were almost no spectators. Overall it was an excellent marathon! I hope to do it again!

Buffalo Marathon Kicks Ass!

You MUST run this marathon if you are looking for a PR. The course is fast, flat, scenic (...absolutely superb waterfront!), and well organized. If all of that doesn't sell you, perhaps this will. For a mere $25, you get a great pasta dinner, beer, a finisher's medal, beer, food, beer, and a really cool t-shirt. Of the 27 marathons that I've run, the Buffalo Marathon is EASILY in my top five. Without question, it kicks ass! Run it!!!

Buffalo Marathon 2003 was Great!

This was my first marathon and I was not sure what to expect. I loved every minute of this race. I thought it was well organized, the course was great, and the fans were supportive. I would recommend this race to anyone new to the marathon. Great job Buffalo!!!

Vast improvement over 2002 comments

I was sort of 'stuck' running the 2003 Buffalo Marathon. I was scheduled to run in NJ three weeks earlier, but had a family emergency come up. So I needed something (fairly) local to substitute. When I visited this site during my research, I was worried because the comments about Buffalo weren't great: bad traffic control, poor fan support, etc. Knowing that it was a small town race (500 people), Buffalo turned out to be a great race. The traffic problems from the year before were gone, and the course is very nice, fair with smallish hills and a nice overview of the marina, cemetery, and neighborhoods. The volunteer support was more than adequate, as were the aid stations (water and Powerade). There was one mistake that I encountered: they mis-marked mile #23. Outside of that, a very good job and experience all round. For $30, one gets a pasta dinner on Saturday and pasta/pizza after - along with beer, a t-shirt, and a finisher's medal. That's value. If your bringing family and friends, since it is on Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, you have Monday to travel home or visit nearby Niagara Falls. It doesn't have great crowd support, except for the relay stations. So one does need to be self-motivated to stay inspired. Oh, I ran a PR (3:15) so I was really pleased. Consider Buffalo if you like the 'small-town' feel.

The most enjoyable half marathon I have ever done.

The warmth and goodwill of all the volunteers and participants made this an exceptional race. The course was fast and clear. I would have liked a few more water stops, as the day did heat up. Thank you for a very enjoyable experience. Sincerely, Kathy Reilly, NYC

Good race

I am glad to see that the number of positive comments about this race. I made comments last year after the race that this was the best value-for-money race. I am glad to see that runners agree with me now. I really cannot understand why runners go to races like Chicago, NYC, Disney, etc, and pay $100 and get almost nothing - a cheap t-shirt and stale food. Buffalo gives you REAL value for your money!!! Does the average runner really care about these so-called elite runners and the money that is being spent on them??? I have done a lot of marathons and my advice to ALL runners is to go to Buffalo Marathon if you want real value.

Buffalo 2003 Could not have been better

Thank you, Buffalo, for hosting such a great marathon. The weather was beautiful amidst 3 days of rain. The course was flat and well laid out. With the exception of a few crossing points in the course, I was impressed with the scenic roads and nice shady trees. What a way to see Buffalo. Anyone considering a spring marathon, come to Buffalo! This was my first full marathon and the Nissan 2003 made it all worthwhile. Great course with a good amount of water stops and porto-johns! The run in the cemetery on Memorial Day weekend was inspiring. Also if Bill Gleason is reading (running partner for the second half of the race), I owe you a beer. Email me at jamey@strauch.net!

THUMBS UP - will run it again !

I can recommend this marathon. I have done a few others (NYC, Vermont, Vancouver) and this one compares well. The course is flat and scenic, and the water stops were well staffed. I had some trouble with the lack of shade the last 7 miles as it warmed up, but there was a nice breeze that helped. One downside is that there are a fair number of turns in the second half of the race.

I really enjoyed this marathon.

This was the smallest marathon I've ever run (which I liked very much) and the things that impressed me the most were the spectators and the volunteers. They were all along the course, clapping and cheering for everyone. I had read about bad traffic control in previous years, but it was certainly taken care of this year. There were plenty of water stations. The plastic cups at the earlier stations made it a little hard to drink, and I'm not a big fan of RED powerade (that red on our shirts has got to convince some spectators that we're dying and that they should never run a marathon). But these were minor problems. The weather was close to perfect and the pasta dinner was excellent. The course had just enough ups and downs to make it interesting. My husband ran the 1/2 marathon and really appreciated having the mile markers for their race. That doesn't always happen when a 1/2 is part of a full marathon. All in all, a wonderful race. I thought I might just run it once, but I'm now seriously thinking about coming back and running it again next year.

'You nailed it, John!!!!!!'

This was my 6th Buffalo Marathon in a row. I can honestly say that after last year's disappointment, John B. and his crew really 'slam-dunked' it this year. It was by far the most beautiful course I have ever run in Buffalo. The traffic control was great, the volunteers were fantastic, and the party was excellent. John and his people have encouraged me to keep my streak alive and come back yet another year to do Buffalo. Thanks John. It was a real treat this year. 5 stars!!! - Rick Ruth, Williamsville

Nice job Buffalo

Nice job Buffalo, and nice job John. This was my 8th marathon and for what you got for the money, it can't be beat. I was fortunate to run some of the miles with a runner (Al from Buffalo) who gave me historical insight in to the sights. This was truly appreciated, and for me was my marathon moment. The course was flat as advertised (no big rollers). The weather was a ten: some sun, shade, and a nice breeze. If you want fans, go to Disney or NYC. If you want a nice friendly course, easy access to the start and finish of the marathon from the host hotel, great marathon organization, and value for your money, go to Buffalo.

Great, well organized race

This was my 97th marathon, and it was one of my most enjoyable. The course is flat and scenic, running through a beautiful cemetery, park, and suburban neighborhoods - all with ample water stops . The volunteers were great, traffic control was excellent, and going by Niagra Square and City Hall just before the finish was really nice. For a $30 entry fee, you get an all you can eat pasta dinner, long sleeve t-shirt, nice finisher's medal, excellent post-race party with more food and beer, and a chance to run a very well organized marathon - thanks to a great bunch of volunteers that made this race possible. Great half-marathon course!

The 1/2 was well organized and the course was excellent. One small hill at 10.5 but the last 2 are essentially downhill or flat. Quiet but courteous spectators and no traffic issues on my run. Only improvement would be to have the post-race party closer to the finish. Nice job John (and all the volunteers)!!!

Best value in marathon running

I thoroughly enjoyed the 2003 marathon. Here are some of the positives: - I've run 11 marathons and this is by far the flattest one I've ever run. Very fast, PR type course. I've read that people say that there are hills in Forest Lawn Cementary, but these are very, very minor. - The start and finish are a block from the host hotel - very convenient. - For $30 you get 2 quality, ad-free t-shirts, a medal and a pasta dinner. - Very pretty course. Lasalle Park and the Marina provide nice lake views. The historic houses on Franklin are beautiful. Forest Lawn Cemetary and Delaware Park are extremely beautiful. These are all in the first half of the marathon. The second half winds through Kenmore (not great, but not horrible) heads back to Delaware Park (pretty) and ends in a 2 mile slightly downhill finish (nice). - The first half of the race is pretty well shaded. The sun takes a toll in the second half, but the nice breezes tend to counteract the sun. - I had no problems with traffic - most streets were closed to traffic and the ones that weren't had police/voulunteers directing traffic/runners at every corner. I think the organizers learned from previous years' problems and greatly improved the organization. - Crowds were small but loud. - Overall, there are a lot of marathon options for Memorial Day weekend, but, this one should be at the top of the list. I've run Vermont, NYC, Philadelphia, Adirondacks and a few more, and this one ranks right up there with any of them. John, the race director, did a tremendous job in 2003!!

Very nice course

This is my 7th marathon. I loved this course, and think it is ideal for someone looking for a personal best. My favorite parts were the harbor front and the cemetery. The city of Buffalo seems clean and nice. There were plenty of volunteers who did a fine job with traffic and rest stops. Finally, we were very lucky with the weather. The predictions were for occasional showers, but we got 100% sunshine.

This was good value for the money

For my first marathon, this was a great experience. I only gave the course a four star rating, since having the course intersect (near the 1/2 marathon start) made for tricky navigating and dodging quicker runners! The organization was just great. 5 stars. Easy to find the expo, pre-race dinner and post-race party. How do they manage to do all this for only a $30 fee? Lots of helpful people on and off the course. I didn't expect to see many spectators, but there were more than when I ran the Toronto waterfront and Niagara half-marathons last year! And they provided some great support.

convenient, flat, and friendly course

I just got back from Buffalo having run what I would call a very friendly, flat, and inexpensive marathon. As a Canadian, I must say I did appreciate the singing of our national anthem at the start. Overall, I found the visit to Buffalo very affordable, and the hotel, which is located at the starting line, has to be one of the most convienently located host hotels that I've stayed in for a marathon. The marathon itself had adequate police support and great volunteer support. A few cranky motorists, and the course itself being flat had a slightly uneven camber that seemed to take its toll after 42km. We were very fortunate to find a restaurant called 'Just Pasta' that treated us extremely fairly in serving a high quality family style pasta dinner. This was an alternative to the race pasta dinner which we, as a group, usually stay away from. The expo was a little light on content. I missed not being able to buy my 'Marathon Mug', but we did get two t-Shirts - one earlier in the mail - and a marathon medal. This is a great small marathon, and if you live in southern Ontario, or upstate New York, I would certainly put it on your spring calendar.

Not as good as I thought...

I expected to see fuel stops (Power Gu, fruit...etc) starting around mile 10, but the race provided NOTHING. Make sure you carry something with you, otherwise you will be drained. They were good by offering water and Gatorade every 2 miles. The course was beautiful, and went through many different areas... city, lakefront, and rural. The police did a good job of keeping the roads clear, although one crazed driver tried to run over some runners. The course was well marked, although the half and full marathon had the same mile markers, so it was sometimes confusing. I did not attend the after race party because they waited too long after the finish to start it. All in all, it was a good deal for the entry fee that I paid. If you want to PR, I would recommend it.

I was very impressed with this Marathon.

I was very impressed with the '03 Buffalo Marathon. The course wound through many beautiful neighborhoods (I didn't realize Buffalo was so nice!!) Spectators were not abundant but were enthusiastic. This course is flat and fast like no other could possibly be. There are only a few very minor hills in the cemetary, which is about 2 miles of running, right in the middle of the race. Pre-race pasta dinner (free) was of good quality. The race start was right out the front door of the official hotel (which granted a late check-out) and had a special rate ($27 cheaper than regular room rate). ALL of the volunteers were enthusiastic. Traffic was well maintained and runners had absolute priority over traffic. Local police were wonderful and friendly. The race was tremendously well organized, with water and sports drink at every two miles. At the finish line there was bottled water, blankets and bananas. The web site is a bit lame but so what. If you choose to run this race, you'll likely get a nice day as it's usually nice in Buffalo in late May.

The low-down on the finisher's medal

The finisher's medal: For some folks, this is a big deal. They have a collection hanging on their wall, an elaborate wind chime, or something similar, and really look forward to a large/unique/pretty finisher's medal. If this is you, don't sign up for the Buffalo Marathon. The finisher's medal is a round medallion about the size of a silver dollar (but bronze!) My recommendation for you is Vermont City. For those of you that enjoy the race purely for what happens between the start and finish lines, run this race. It's small but well put-together, and the entry fee of $25 can't be beat. If you're solidly in one of the two groups above, appreciate the fact that you probably won't see the other group at the race ;)

A positive thing for the city of Buffalo

The host hotel allowed a free late check out which gave me time to shower and nap prior to the drive back to Cleveland. The soccer kids must have been pretty quiet since I did not even notice them. Hotel room was really nice fireplace and all A+. I have ran 5 marathons including Cleveland and Columbus which are both pretty big. Ther was vheicular traffic at both if I remember right. Colombus was just last week and I know there were cars crossing and opposite direction, I do not see the problem. I had the stomach flue so my pace was a little off and my 3:42 finish was no where near fast enough to be an age group winner my pr would not be enough either but I would never complain about the trophy I would be thrilled that I won one. The course was beautiful the race was well managed this is something Buffalo can be proud of. I went to Buffalo thinking it would be a crummy dump of a city but I wanted to get in a spring marathon so I went anyway. I left thinking how wrong I was. I now have another spring marathon on my list. I did not realize that the pasta dinner was included in the entry fee, what other race gives that? A nice sweatshirt, cap and finishers medal all for $25, I left thinking what a good find this race was. And by the way what do people really think a finishers medal should be? I have heard that complaint a lot 'the medal sucked'. Should the medal be made of real gold or weigh 5 lbs.? I think all five of my marathon finishers medals are great the value is what they mean to me. Thanks for a great race.

Good Value- Good People-Stop Whining

I enjoyed the Nissan. No problems or major complaints and another PR for me. It was an excellent value,a small marathon, a fast course, and a good experience for most of the runners. Sure there is room for improvement, as with any race or anything, but the marathon is much better than all the reviewers on here would suggest. The free pasta dinner was fine for me! Come on! Especially sorry that all the abundant free food/beer/drinks at the convention center celebration didn't meet some people's more cultured palates...Oh my God!!! The male winner/whiner Steve Wilson should learn some PR (public relations) instead of trying to set a PR...what a bitter ungracious whiner/winner. Maybe he should get a real job...as a greeter at Walmart. The home-town female winner (Sikora)was great and gracious- congrats to her!!! The people of Buffalo though sparsely out on the course were 95% supportive and enthusiastic- thanks for all the smiles and encouragement. Buffalo could benefit from greater community support for the race to bolster much needed tourism in the economically depressed area. My biggest complaint?- realizing that so many 'fellow runners' are bitter, whiny, self-centered people...I was running partly to get away from people like you...If I mail you a check for your $25 will you shut up?

The best value for money marathon

I have done many marathons in both the US and Canada and I can give some honest comments. The Buffalo marathon is by far the best marathon that I have done and I have done a lot in different cities. For $25 you get a very good sweatshirt, a good cap, a pasta meal with free beer, very good post race foods with free beer, pasta , pizza, etc, plus a nice place to sit, relax and enjoy the moments with family in the Convention Centre plus a very good scenic course. I know there were some problems with no baggage check, maybe pasta ran out or a long wait, traffic control etc. These are problems that can be corrected easily so do not be so negative. I was told that last year almost no one showed up at the Saturday night pasta so how was the director to know the turnout would be extremely good. Please do not forget that the director has a small budget also. As compared to the Chicago, Disney and New York marathons, the Buffalo marathon is extremely superior. At the Chicago , NY and Disney marathons you get a cheap , cheap $2 t-shirt and some stale dry bagel, if you are lucky. The directors of these marathons take the huge entry fees $90 and pay the no name elite athletes huge appearance fees. Disney take the money period. Buffalo do not offer a lot of prize money but they do give the runners value for their money. I have read a lot of comments on various marathons on this website and do not know why runners are so negatives to races like Buffalo. The directors of the small marathons like New Orleans, Hartford, Buffalo, London Ontario try very hard and runners should be more supportive of their efforts. I like big marathons since I am not too swift. However the big marathons cost a lot and give nothing in return. Runners should go to marathons where the directors give a lot to runners. I certainly would not go out of my way to do Chicago again even though I like big marathons and big expos. The directors of Chicago, NY etc would certainly be receptive to runners concern if their numbers drop. I would certainly ask fellow marathon runners to carefully consider the small marathons like Buffalo, Hartford, New Orleans to name a few.

Don't waste your training on this one!

You have enough to worry about when running a marathon other than such things as: Will there be enough food at pasta feed? Will my gear actually reach the finish line? Will I get yelled at by drivers and nearly run over? For all those reasons, a great city with many lovely areas to run through should rethink whether it can put on a decent marathon. Under current race management the answer should be 'no.' Buffalo gets enough negative press for its bad weather and bad economy, there's no reason to add the inability to organize a first-class marathon. To borrow from the American Express ads 'traffic control -- priceless'....in this case it was 'worthless'

Relatively flat course, good value

The course is relatively flat and fast. The weather was windy this year. The race could be better organized. Traffic control, the web site, and mile marker signs could all be improved. The half-marathon course overlaps with the marathon for the first several miles and the mile marker signs are the same design with just a different color. The race could probably use some additional co-sponsors, maybe a sports gel to give out around mile 17 or so. The pasta party had a long line to get in. All in all, for $25.00 it was a good value. Maybe for a few dollars extra more they can make some improvements.

OK race, Organization needs some work

If you're looking for a PR, this might be the place, but if you're looking for a well organized event, keep looking. From the relocation of the expo to the tremendous delays at the pasta dinner to the lack of traffic control and directions on the course to the bizarre food at the post-race (you can keep your donuts and soda - how about a bagel and a banana?), it all had the feel of an event with organizers who had never done anything like this before. To read about the winner of the race missing turns because of a lack of volunteers giving direction and being nearly run over while on the course (which they advertised would be closed to traffic) is disturbing. On the positive side, the people at the water stops were great, and despite some hills and some winds, most of the people I talked to posted good times. As I told a fellow runner after the race, there are too many other options for Spring marathons for me to want to do this one again.

Flat, Fast and Fantastic

I was really impressed with this course. It flowed nicely through the residential neighborhoods of Buffalo and some suburbs. There were a lot of turns and straightaways. I don't think I was bored once. We even ran through a cemetery in the first half. It is a great course to qualify for Boston! I was able to do it for the first time here after failing three other times on other courses. I liked the fact that there were no major hills. There was a small one in the cemetery and one right before mile 24. The last stretch of 2 miles or so is all a downward slope. There were more spectators than I thought there would be.

good bang for your buck marathon...

Definitely needs more port-a-johns and the people doing traffic control need some orange vests to go with those cardboard signs. Also, the web site is not kept current. Only found out about a course change right at the start of the marathon. Nonetheless I would do it again. Course basically flat except for the cemetery.

Only run if you want to dodge traffic

It's a great course, and if the roads were actually closed, it would be a decent race, but there were several times where I was forced over to the side of the road because of traffic. It's unheard of that a race this size wouldn't close the roads to traffic. There were also virtually no spectators on the course at all. I shouldn't complain though, I got a PR, and met my goal of qualifying for Boston.

Very little was wrong with this race. There was no gear check and the course was not closed to traffic. The former was a problem for me since I had no hotel room or car to put my stuff in. The latter wasn't really a big deal as I thought the traffic control was quite good. And other than those two things, this was a well-organized race in every way. The course is flat, fast, and mostly straight, with few hard turns. The mile markers and 5k markers were all there and accurately placed. The spectators were a bit sparse, but those that were out there were great. The water stops were all staffed well. I highly recommend this race.

Bang for the buck, can't be beat...

They definately could use some more restrooms on the course, as well as better marked restrooms at the start. Also, packet pickup and course change info was not relayed affectively to runners via the website. The traffic situation was at times quite entertaining; probaby need to get the word out about the race a bit better. All in all a good race, thanks to the race organizers and the race volunteers.

Best marathon ever

I have run a lot of marathons in many different US and Canadian cities and compare this marathon from experience. This marathon is probably the best marathon that I have run in terms of value for money. The cost of this marathon was $25 and for that you got: a very nice sweatshirt, a cap, a very nice pasta dinner with a t-shirt thrown in, and beer; a great FLAT scenic course and a great party at the end with beer, beer, beer, pasta, pizza. I honestly do not know how marathon runners judge a race. Runners want flat courses; spectators; good t-shirts etc. What I like in a race is where the directors gives value for money. This race had no or very little prize money for no name elite runners but instead gave everything back to the runners. Take Chicago and New York for instance. These races cost approx $90 and the runners get a cheap, cheap t-shirt and would be lucky if they get a 3 day old stale bagel at the finish. Instead these directors take all the money to pay no name elite runners. How many runners remember who won these races? How many runners care??? I ran the Baltimore marathon last year and got no food at the end !!!! The Buffalo marathon did not have time chips and maybe little advertisement, but the director has a small budget and gives back a lot to the runners. This is all runners can ask for. I love big races , big Expos but I have found that the best races are the small ones like Buffalo, New Orleans, Rhode Island, Hartford etc where the directors try very hard. Give these races a chance and forget Disney, Chicago, rock and Roll etc I wish that I could speak to fellow runners because you have to believe me when I tell you that races like Buffalo are the ones to enter. This is the best marathon race that I have been to. It is truly a Peoples Marathon. Do this marathon and you will not regret it. I wish all marathons could be like Buffalo.

Absolutely Needs improvement

I thought that the course was very good. It was flat and fast as described. The scenary was very good. I truly enjoyed running through the cemetary. Now for the complaints for which there are many. There was absolutely no traffic being stopped during the course which makes for very dangerous running conditions. I have run in smaller races, in terms of number of people, than this put on by running clubs where the enitre course was blocked off and the police were there to make sure everyone was safe. I can't say that you get what you pay for because in those smaller races I paid less than I did for this race. Secondly I was running towards the back, but still making good time, however there was absolutely no one to direct me as to which way I was to run for the race. I got lost twice and this was extremely frustrating. Also I saw no porta-johns along the course except for at the beginning of the race. It seemed like an extremely poorly organized race. The website was completly inaccurate for details. The hotel that was said to be 'the hotel' for the race did not have any special rates. I would not recommend this race to anyone. There are many more races out there that have greater fan support, better organization and are much safer in terms of not having to dodge traffic.

great course

My fifth marathon. Excellent course layout, tree covered roads, interesting sights, and friendly people and supporters. Mostly level, some small 'bunny hills' early on but nothing stressful. Some minor traffic control problems with a few cars wandering near but race not affected. Only minus was few people on the streets to cheer us on, but those who were there were great. Excellent course and experience overall..

Low Key, Friendly Folks, This One Will Grow on Ya'

This was a really great race genuinely pleased with the spirit and friendliness of all of the volunteers, organizers and the townspeople who clapped & cheered along the way. My biggest Heros were the policeman who kept traffic at bay while being berated by a pissed off motorist & the little girl at the end of her driveway who was handing out lemonade & gummybears. If you need a race with hills, loud cheering throngs, bands playing music on every street corner or lotsa glitziness, you'll probably need to go elsewhere. However, if you want to cherish some small yet memorable marathon moments, this is the race for you! I'll be back next year for sure! Lamentations?? 1. A few more hills would be nice! 2. Where was Dear Foots Knee Stone? I coulda used that rub! 3. Could we go by the falls next year? Other than that, I had a great race and a memorable experience.

GOOD MARATHON, GOOD VALUE

The town of buffalo can look like a ghost town when you first arrive, but the marathon has some fairly decent scenery. Other than a few hills, a fast and flat course that gave me a PR. The runners are very friendly, and I held up conversation all the way up to mile 20. Only $25 to run. You'll definitely get your money's worth.

A good marathon for first time marathoner

Although I have run a number of races including 30k and 20 mile, this was my first marathon. I know it must take a lot of time to organize and plan a race as large as this. Overall I would rate it a very good race. The value for the entry fee, $25, was excellent. The enthusiasm from the spectators and volunteers was contagious. The local running clubs (especially the Buffalo Triathletes) did a great job at the water stops. Negatives include the website not being up to date. The website stated the starting point to be a the Adam's Mark Hotel, when it was acutally a few blocks north. The registration and packet pickup location was changed and that was also not updated on the website. Traffic control was excellent at most locations, but in a couple of major intersections I was stopping traffic myself. But at least this kept things interesting! My biggest beef is the lack of support from the City of Buffalo and especially its local media. I went through at least 3 intersection where motorists were yelling and beeping at the traffic control and police because they were being delayed. If the Buffalo News, which had no article of the marathon in its sports section, and radio promoted the marathon, the public would have been better informed and perhaps there would have been more spectators. It is a shame that the city and its media could not have supported the race in which the director and its volunteers worked so hard. Overall its a very good race. More local support and organization would make it an excellent marathon.

Fast course, needs a little work

45+ minute wait in line for Pasta Party- Please consider new venue for 2003. Adequate number of portajohns at start, but they were 3 blocks away; adequate number on course. Winding course with lots of turns; good traffic control, but it was not evident at some intersections which way to go, and traffic control volunteers were not pointing the way. Few spectators. 2002 had ideal temperatures, occasional sun, but windy. Needs more water stops.

my first marathon was great

It was my first marathon and I thought it was great a course... being only a senior in high school and 17 years old. It was a great accomplishment. I will be doing it this year.. the people support around the whole course was great..compared to prior marathons that I went due to my dad running over 35 of them... the fans and the support from people were great...especially the cheerleaders that were along the course..a lot people that you see maybe once or twice a year gave you your support..the notice of the race was out on the tv and radio and people were just out to support you..I had a great time.

Okay race but closed down finish line early

The race is good and the race director tries hard to make it runner friendly. Great sweat-shirt and pizza, and beer at the finish even better. Negative was moving back of packers to sidewalks early and at 4:50 mark they were basically closing down the finish line. If there is a six hour clock why close down an hour early?

If you're a runner, you'll love this marathon!

The marathon course is almost entirely flat with the notable exception of Forest Lawn Cemetery, which is a challenging couple of miles. You wind through some beautiful tree-lined neighborhoods. Buffalo is an old city whose grandeur has long passed, however running the streets gives you a feel as to how the city grew up. The course runs past many relics of this city's better days. It's a history buff's dream course. Heck, you even pass the grave of President Millard Fillmore. That's worth the entry fee right there. The crowds were suprisingly thick in some areas. The neighborhood families really seemed to embrace the marathon. It was great to be cheered by young families. Organization of the event was top-notch, though there were some legitimate complaints from people at the back of the marathon. A nasty thunderstorm blitzed through about 4 and a half hours into the run sending some traffic volunteers scurrying for cover. This left some runners to their own devices as to how to finish the course. Finally, I'd like to dispell the notion that it snows in late May in Buffalo. The weather for the first 3 hours of the run was cool and sunny. Perfect marathon weather.

Good Marathon - Decent Course

Chose this one as my 'May' Marathon this year. Can't exactly put a finger on the reason why, but, this marathon just didn't excite me a whole lot. However, I can't necessarily blame the marathon. Perhaps it's just my personal disappointment over a rather poor performance when I had expected better of myself. Also, the fact that my best race photo ever had me perfectly centered on the side of a Buffalo City garbage truck 20 feet to my left side was a bummer - - but I can't blame Buffalo for either of those things! The course had plenty of interesting features, I was amazed at how MANY traffic control people there were. Most of the course had what I considered to be adequate spectator support (but then I've run a number of very small marathons where the spectators were nearly non-existent). Post Race festivities were inside, with adequate places to sit down and TONS of food - - not necessarily 'runners' food but after a marathon a good load of fat and sugar tastes pretty darn good! If travelling from somewhere else spend the next day at Niagara Falls - - that way no matter what you think of the marathon the trip will definitely be worth it!!

Buffalo Marathon is back - New course for 2001

The Buffalo Erie Buick Marathon is a marathon for runners who like smaller races (403 finishers) with much spectator support. Great weather, good course (winds around city of Buffalo and suburbs). The Buffalo marathon was not run in 2000, but had a great comeback this year.

Buffalo Marathon - Good Value

It's a shame. But the Buffalo marathon could be a real boon to this city if the organizers, city/county officials and local residents/businesses got their act together. The course is varied and relatively scenic. Not as flat at Washington's Marine Corps, so it's a little easier on the ITB sufferers of the world than would otherwise be imagined (by the organizer's billing of 'flat and fast'). A 42-year-old sports doctor won this year's race at 2:29. A good pace. The downside of the course was traffic management - but that may be due to lack of significant pre-race publicity in the (very) local Buffalo News and some lack of PR savvy generally among race organizers (the web site is meager). Buffalonians generally didn't know how to root for the local talent either (e.g., 'You look horrible,' a metro cop said to a friend near the 19-mile mark. The 'friend' lost it right there.) But with a bit of work on PR, traffic management and spectator savvy, the Buffalo marathon could be a real find for runners who may have missed out on Pittsburgh, or are looking to add another race or two to their Spring calendar.

Great re-birth!

Looking for a fast, flat course at the end of May, I came back to Buffalo for the first time in 10 years for a marathon. I was pleasantly surprised by the value{I am Canadian}, beatiful but winding course, and the finish area. The post-race was in a large gym, which was comfortable. This race has new sponsors and organizers, and they know what they are doing. Keep it in mind for a fast flat course.
