A great first marathon experience!

This is a great race for first time marathoners! Not too big, not too small. The course is flat, and the organizers and spectators helped make it a special experience. You get a brightly colored bib so people know to cheer you on as a first timer and a nice 'My First Marathon' swag bag (a cotton t-shirt, keychain, and sticker) included with the race jacket. The long straightaways sucked a little, but overall it's a nice course with lots of greenery. You run through a few well-manicured neighborhoods and a metropark. There are several quiet stretches without a lot of spectators, but I was glad not to have an audience the entire time. And the people who were out cheering were awesome - creative signs, cheers, and refreshments (mimosas, beer, donuts, popsicles, orange slices, etc.) As a back-of-the-packer, I was a little disappointed to cross the finish line and only find chocolate chip cookies left to grab - all of the pizza and other free food had already been eaten or taken away. But that is a minor complaint in an otherwise great race. 10/10 would run again!

Decent race but wouldn't return.

I had high hopes for my hometown race (I now live elsewhere in Ohio and have run other big marathons). This race was ok, but the crowd support was meh especially that last part on the bike path (granted, it was raining, but by the time I came through it had cleared up) and the last 4 miles blew my PR - so boring and a steady incline it seemed. Volunteers didn't even know where bag check was located, the morning was a panic because of lack of signage as far as where to go from the parking area. Added unnecessary stress. And putting food outside the stadium was a long walk especially because I needed to get back to finish line to see a friend. I finished in 445, not the absolute back of the pack, and they didn't even have a banana left, just a cold piece of pizza. Wouldn't have bothered walking all the way over there had I known there was almost nothing there. The glass mug is unique. Expo ok. Overall maybe I'm spoiled by another Ohio race but my expectations were not met and I wouldn't run this again.

Great Marathon Experience

This was my first marathon, and Glass City didn't disappoint. Organization and volunteers were great, I really enjoyed the course and the crowd support from the community was excellent. Toledo as a city isn't at the top of my list to visit but I would run this marathon again, the race experience was awesome.

Favorite Spring Race

I've run the Glass City Half Marathon twice. Packet pickup is always well organized, parking and start corrals easy to find, course is well marked, water stops and course Marshall's so encouraging. Even the residents in the neighborhoods the course rolls through are encouraging and friendly. I seed myself in the slower pace groups and the water stops have always been in good supply for the things you would need. The only thing I don't care for the length of time you spend on University Park's Trail. Straight as an arrow and you're on it for a few miles. Really makes it tough when your in those final miles, but at the same time it could be the mental challenge you were looking to overcome. Overall it's a great race and one that I'll keep in my rotation when I think I'd like to run a long race again.

Great Race, Could be a better Course

I've been lucky enough to have ran this marathon 9 times and the organization and support during the race are fantastic. The expo is well run and easy to access with excellent volunteers. Along the course all the water, Gatorade, and energy gel is is as good as I've ever experienced (26 marathons/6 continents/3 majors). The volunteers all weekend are the best! My only quibble is the overall course. I feel like there could be a way to have it go through actual Toledo. The Downtown/Old West End/ Uptown/West Toledo would lead to more crowd support. I feel like the more concentrated population and businesses would add more fun! Running through Ottawa Hills and Sylvania the houses are few and far between with less people. The new bike/running trails (Chessie Circle Trail) could be included. Downtown is much nicer then it was 15 years ago, include it! The last 4 miles on the University Parks Trail is draining, it's a no man's land with little to no crowd support, and this is when you need it most! Getting the Toledo community involved would be great and ending the marathon by running with some crowd support would be much better. I know the logistics might be more difficult but a race through Toledo and an ending downtown might be just what this race needs to take it to the next level and attract more participants. Make it happen Clint!

Outstanding Organization, Outstanding Race

I love this race. The communication, information, organization and volunteers are top notch, some of the best around. The course is awesome, very flat and with a great variation of trails, streets and neighborhoods. The spectators are incredible, supportive, fun and line the course at nearly every mile.

Half was great!

I did the half this year (2024) and it was great! Only thing is there were more hills than I expected so make sure to train for hills! The course was beautiful! I loved how you got some city and some nature! This event was very well organized and have zero complaints!

Best Flat course ever!

Even in pouring rain and humid temperatures this course had great crowd support, lots of water stops, well organized, and flat course to run on. What else could you want?

Great course, but could use some improvement.

They ran out of gels on the course. I was not prepared for that. It really de-railed my plan. I found out later that early runners were being allowed to grab handfuls of gels instead of 1-2. I was not offered one of those heat blankets after the race like others were. And there weren't enough bathrooms on the course because every one I saw had a long line and that also hurt my time. I held it for an hour before I caved. Over all it was a good course and I felt like it was run pretty well. Just a few things I'd fix!

Very well organized and fast

Fun, scenic and very fast. A few inclines on the course, but no actual hills. Plenty of water stations on the course with enthusiastic volunteers. Course was clearly marked with course marshals at intersections for extra guidance. Plentiful free parking very close to start and finish lines. Fantastic pacers, great photographers, and helpful staff. Great jacket for those who sign up early, and a fun glass mug at the finish line along with your medal. Porta potty lines pre-race were long, just allow 15 minutes or use the ones near the finish line instead. Most water stops were on the left side of the road; I would have preferred them on the right since people tend to pass on the left, but that's the only thing I'd change. Great race!

Great course...unless you're a wheelie.

I would love this marathon if I wasn't a wheelie, but for a wheelie like me, it was not so great. Winding up & down roads through the mansion district was pretty but for wheelies, turning every 250 yards on hilly terrain wrecks you. The trail route was scenic also but I got stuck behind ambi's where the trail was split for laps. The saving grace was that they gave me a guide on a bike who was clearing the way for me, without him it would've been a nightmare. Runners were missing turns, I would've been lost. If you want to be an inclusive event...have the race coordinator wheelie his chosen course before making a decision. If you don't want to change the course...push the wheelies out 30 min before the elites and that would eliminate 75% of the issues.

First time marathoner

So for a first time marathoner the experience was amazing. I say this because I didn't know what to expect 100% on race day. Pryor to the race I had many questions about different things. So I reached out to different people associated with the committee to get them answered. My questions were responded to promptly and professionally. That being said, I didn't have one problem that day (besides the heat). Speaking of heat. The medical staff was on point that day with the temps being 30° warmer than what everyone had been training in. I would say with the so many people having heat issues that day, I didn't hear of one complaint about being not being attended to. Med staff =A+ For the course and the people. Very cool turnout from people cheering, sprinklers going, hoses shot at the hot runners if they wanted, fuel and water stops supplied by homeowners, they were everywhere they could be. And the course was just enough of elevation change and make it interesting... the scenery through the park and the neighborhoods made it peaceful and beautiful. So for my first experience running such a race, I would give it a big thumbs up.

Spring PR at Glass City Marathon

Toledo and the GCM was perfect for a flat and fast spring marathon. The course was fun starting and ending on UT's campus, and the marathon was scenic around beautiful Toledo neighborhoods and Wildwood Metropark. Everything was well planned out, there were lots of spectators and entertainment around the course, and amazing support staff and volunteers made the weekend and race run very smoothly! 10/10 recommend!

You'll run faster in toldeo is true

So this was my second marathon after last years Detroit and am now addicted to pain. Toledo was the earliest full and closest and heard good things about it so we signed up! It was super hot with temps around 68 at 6:30am and approaching 80 by 11am. The water stations were adequate but there were some stretches between 15-18 and 20-25 that were full sun and some of the paths in the metro parks lacked crowd support. My main complaint was the lack of porta potties at start. They had a few clusters of 4-6 PP but with everyone over hydrating there were lines 100+ deep to wait for 4 porta potties. I waited in line at 6:13 and at 6:20 I took off for the finish where there were hundreds empty and ready. My friend didn't fare so well she waited til mile 6-8 until she found one without a wait I cramped up right after mile 25, another runner stopped and helped me stretch my calf's and get me up. I still PRd by 18 seconds but it was HOTTTTT and people puking, cramped up and EMS sirens galore. The expo line was kinda excessive, the early registration jacket was cheaper than it appeared online but I am thinking 2023 give it another chance. Course was flat, crowds good for 90% of race and Post race party was nice

Well run under challenging conditions

I was surprised that the race ran. If it hadn't been for the vaccination push, I expect it would not (Ohio had a significant 4th wave of COVID deaths that peaked the week before the event, and was still averaging about 20 deaths and 1,600 cases per day). The organizers handled it very well but Mercy Health is the main sponsor, so I expected as much. As others have noted, either proof of being fully vaccinated OR a negative COVID test within 72 hours of the event was required; both were free in the area where I live. COVID changes: Only one vendor at the Expo. Gear check was self-serve before the start and after the finish. Aid stations only had small, capped bottles of water, which many runners struggled trying to open (I gave up on one). There were few spectators, but more than I expected. There was a small refreshment table around the corner and down the hill after the finish; I found about it later. The really good thing: There were a LOT of corrals for the start. Runners were commenting at the beginning how nice it was, not having to dodge other runners for the first mile. THIS WAS WONDERFUL. PLEASE DO THIS FOR FUTURE MARATHONS!

Nice Marathon

A well-organized marathon that took place during a pandemic is admirable. I was irritated that the course only offered water, no sports drink. The protocols for the marathon were NOT well communicated. Lastly, the hotel situation in the Toldeo area is annoying.

Flat, Fast, & Friendly

I will start with the vaccine requirement. They required a vaccination for the China virus - or that you had been tested and negative - within 72 hours of checking in. Many of us are carry-overs, deferred from last year's event - that was cancelled. Within the last several weeks, this virus requirement was added. Without the proper paperwork, you would not be running on Sunday morning. The PCR tests take too long to get results and the rapid tests were not readily available - at least where I live. But I got a rapid test Thursday and got though this okay (but I had to drive 80 miles for the test). There was a long line for checking in Saturday afternoon, and that was after registration had already been open for the two previous days. I think we all got through it okay. Ground zero for this marathon was the area around the Stadium at the University of Toledo - called the Glass Bowl. Check-in was under the bleachers. The line seemed to keep moving. After your number was assigned and you had your bib, a little further down you got a box with your SWAG - a T-shirt, a glass mug, safety pins, some ads, a honey gel, and the finisher's medal (I prefer receiving my medal at the finish line). The glass mug was along the lines of an A&W root-beer mug. It is nice!! Parking lot #10 - adjacent to the stadium - was where everything seemed to be organized. The start line was there (the finish line was on the football field turf). There were 5 corrals where runners were assigned to congregate. The corrals were released in order, with a couple of minutes between each wave. This spread the runners out more at the beginning. It worked fine. The course started out meandering through the University, and went on to roads that were closed, or partially closed, for the event. Law enforcement did a great job keeping runners safe and traffic moving as best they could. Something I had never seen before, this marathon had a dashed blue line about every 50 feet along the course. It was a great alternative to cones and signs. They must have got permission from the city to do that. But from about mile 15 to almost 17, the blue dashed lines were not present. Once I noticed the line was gone, I thought I might have gotten off course. But there were Toledo Runner Club signs through that part (a neighborhood) to point the way. It might have been a neighborhood home-owner's association that would not allow them to paint a stripe on the road. But who knows for sure? The weather was mostly overcast, and the sun was obscured by clouds. Starting line temperature was probably near 40 and high was probably mid to upper 50's. It was great weather for running. Once on the course and through a couple of turns, I had no idea where in the town I was. I was unfamiliar with the town, and did not recognize any landmarks, roads, or buildings. At about mile-post 21.5, the railroad tracks oriented me for the stretch back to campus. It seemed that most of this course was on roads, but there were parts on the trail system too. Around mile 12 and 21, the course covered the same part of a trail. The first time through you turned right, the second time through, you turned left. From mile 13 almost to 20, we were on roads and in neighborhoods. There was a long, long stretch on a major road. Just before mile-post 20 we went on the trail again, and were on trails again until back on campus. From just before mile-post 22 until past mile-post 25, we were on a paved foot and bike path that ran parallel to the railroad tracks. Back on campus, the last 3/4 of a mile were on campus streets and through parking lots. The blue dashed line kept runners on track back through many twists & turns, then back to parking lot #10 and on to the stadium turf for the finish line. Closing comments: There were a lot of people here for this event. The director did the best job possible given the circumstances. There was no Gator-ade or Power-ade available. Only water was available at each water station. Sometimes neighbors might be handing out their own things to help runners (I did get one very small cup of orange Gator-ade from some stranger). I could not carry enough Gator-ade for the whole course, so I ran out with still a few miles to go. Somewhere in the second half - maybe about mile posts 16 and 19, there were men handing out Stinger honey gel. That was really significant, because there were no other carbs on the course. Also there were a few crowds of fans along the way cheering us on. That helps emotionally. Also, at the finish line there were boxed lunches and bottles of water. The lunch was a turkey sub sandwich, pretzels, a golden delicious apple, and a chocolate chip cookie. But no other fruit (a banana would have been a nice addition). It was a great sandwich!

It was the best of times it was the worst of times

First off, I want to start with the good. We had a live race when every other race is cancelling and going virtual. We got to run a real marathon and have a finish inside a football stadium. Sure, we had to have proof of shots or vaccines or a negative test, but we got to run a real race. Was it different, yes. Was having no gatorade an issue, yes. But we had a live race. The course is as promised, flat and fast. I ran my first sub 2:50 marathon so believe the hype. They also had a decent medal and a nice beer glass in the race packet. Now, all that being said, a race that is 44 years old should have some things down at this point. Like not directing runners the wrong way on a course. The half marathon lead pack was all directed incorrectly and it caused mass confusion for everyone. I was in an area where runners were coming in from three directions and there were no signs where to go and no volunteers explaining what to do. It was complete chaos. My friend ended up running 14.8 miles on his half marathon as a result. Secondly, there were barely any toilets at the start. For the amount of people racing, they should have had double. I stood in line over 30 minutes and barely made my corral. I have never waited that long at a marathon is this was my 21st. Finally, the race shirt was the absolute worst race shirt I have ever received. I love wearing my marathon shirts but this one was poorly designed and improperly fitting too. I have a running team of 14 people who were at the race and not one person liked the shirt and most were giving it away. I am sure that is not the intent but I don't think anyone 'tested' the shirt to see if people would like it. Overall, props to holding a race. I ran the marathon and had no issues in my race. But not having the course marked properly (several areas had confusing sections where I saw people run the wrong way) is a huge no-no. I won't be back but only because I would normally be running Boston in the spring.

An Ohio Gem

This course is flat and fast and the race weather is usually conducive to PR stuff. The route takes you through a good slice of Toledo, wonderful old homes, and tree-lined streets. Some marathons are stuck going through run-down neighborhoods or raunchy industrial areas with their fumes. This one isn't stuck. The university area is a fine place to feature the start and finish and the highways are close by, too. Part of why I like this marathon is that a running club stands behind it, rather than a tourist group. And, it's been around for a long time ...

Misses a lot of Toledo and MARATHON RELAY? WTF!

I have run this race numerous times. Here are some things you should know. First, This race has a 'marathon relay' running on the same course as the real marathon. The marathon course should be reserved for those who have actually trained for a marathon, not someone who wants to just do 5 miles of it. Imagine being at mile 20 and having a fresh body jump right in the race beside you chatting you up while you are in the middle of an actual marathon. This whole marathon relay is a smack in the face to the real marathon athletes and is nothing more than a way to fleece out extra money from the community for this event. Second, This race really doesn't get into the real areas of Toledo. It sticks to the nicer parts. I personally would rather see this run through the scuzzy parts of town. Third, like all races these days, it is overrun with women. They make up about 64% of this event, so unless you are in the top 5% of runners be prepared to run with a bunch of chicks.

Very nice race...

I have run the Glass City twice and the half once. It was my first marathon and a wonderful experience. The course is pretty flat and goes through very nice neighborhoods as well as a park. The spectators could be more plentiful but this is a minor quibble. The expo is not overly large but well-equipped. The volunteers and race officials are very accommodating and professional. There are so many other marathons that I would not run it again but I would do the half.

First half after a double! Great organization!

The race features free parking at the race start and packet pickup. The expo was big and featured a large number of vendors. I did the half since I ran the full the day before in Dearborn. The course had rolling hills net downhill. I would recommend this race to people from Canada since you start in Ottawa Ohio! Pretty homes and vey nice people. Great restaurants nearby and I stayed at the Red Roof Inn for $50 a night about 7 miles from the race. The University gym is better than all the gyms I trained in in Canada. Worth the drive! The post race party features free beer, pizza, cinnamon sticks, bagels, licorice, cookies, pretzels and a bbq! All for free! Pricing for registration was inexpensive as well.

A well-organized race with a fast course

Toledo's Glass City Marathon has been run 41 times and that experience shows. Just about everything is well organized - good parking, a wave start with wide roads for the first 8 miles to ease congestion between marathoners and halfers (they split after running 8 miles together), easy packet pick-up, and ample porta-potties in all the right spots. I lost count, but I think there were about 87 water and Gatorade stops - they were everywhere. The course starts through some stunningly beautiful neighborhoods of Toledo's suburbs and then through two pretty parks. The last few miles are on a bike trail that does get boring at times, until finishing on the University of Toledo campus, which is pretty and very accommodating to runners (the Savage Arena is open before the race starts with lots of bathroom facilities). The course is quite flat, with just enough hills to give variety without causing pain. Their motto of 'You'll run faster in Toledo' is true - a 4 hour marathon puts you in the second half of runners. The one drawback to this marathon is the crowd support - there is very little. I ran with a large pack around a 4 hour pace and the crowd support was sparse through the neighborhoods and almost non-existent in the parks and trails. Overall, The Glass City Marathon is a well-organized race that provides good opportunities for a fast run.

Flat, fast and great support!

I thought this marathon was well organized. I had intentions of improving on my time and was looking for a fast and flat course. This certainly lived up to what I had heard, I ran a 20 minute PR! The course was great, I like that it went through the parks, too. There is one stretch after mile 20 where there can't be much crowd support, which was a little tough. The rest of the race I was surprised at all the people outside in the neighborhoods cheering us on! Definitely a race I would recommend and run again! Thanks Glass City!

Great for First-Time Marathoners!

This was my first ever marathon, so I guess I am a little biased but I thought Toledo did a great job! The expo was great, lots of pre-race goodies and awesome gear. The course was well organized, mostly flat, a decent amount of turns so you're not bored running on the same long stretch for miles on end. My only complaint (or suggestion) would be the start...better communication about location of bathrooms (the lines were LONG at the start), and better organization of the corrals. I had to start on the outside of the barriers, as a lot of us couldn't fit in toward the beginning. I know they had to deal with some construction issues, so this may all be fixed next year. Overall, highly recommend this race!

One of My Favorite Marathons

I'm biased by the fact that I ran a PR here, but I thought Glass City was a great race! The expo was one of the larger ones I've attended. We received 2(!) nice shirts. Traffic was a bit congested at the start but easy parking. Wonderful volunteers throughout and great fan support. If you've run a few marathons, you know that no one wants to stand around all day cheering for runners, but there were more fans at this race than at many others I've attended, and they were very supportive. The race had a ton of well-stocked water stops. Perhaps best of all, this is one of the few races where you don't have to weave your way through slow-moving half-marathoners. The awards and finisher medals were top-notch. I wasn't crazy about the hill at mile 19 but my only real complaint had to do with the section of the race from 22 to 25 that circled around on bike trails. VERY lonely & difficult mentally for a racer. Otherwise the course was well-marked, and the finish area had plenty of food, beverages, etc. I have run 15 marathons, including Twin Cities, Grandmas, Boston, etc., and this is one of my 2 or 3 favorites!

Ok; room for improvement

The Expo was great; well organized and Dave's Running is the best. Race day? Lack of port-a-pottys and then having people start completely opposite from the direction most people are coming was a disaster. The pacer? Sorry, but to run a 3:40 you log 8:22 miles not 8:06 and such and then ease up at the end. That was frustrating as I pushed myself to stay with the pacer instead of using my watch; I paid for it the last 6 miles. The last several miles were barren. I like bike hike trails, but when you are suffering, it seems like a 10th of a mile is forever. Not my favorite marathon.

I RAN BETTER IN TOLEDO!

I have run about 15 marathons of various sizes (NYC, Detroit, Steamtown) and I was really impressed with the organization and amenities at GCM. The expo was bigger and more fun than expected thanks to the great location on UT campus, Dave's Running Store (cool T-shirts!), and kids races (cute and inspiring). Race morning was a breeze. Plenty of toilets (I went twice!), DJs pumping the crowd and giving directions. We did start late but I didn't have any other plans for that morning so it wasn't a problem. Great National Anthem by a local high schooler. The course is nice with good variety and no actual hills. I did read complaints about running along a road with cars but we also ran though parks, along dedicated bike paths, and through quiet neighborhoods. It never felt like monotonous miles of roadwork. The crowds are small but many Toledoans did make an effort to come out. Plus there are 19 water stations full of enthusiastic volunteers and a DJ on the course (nice touch, you see him twice). Post race food includes PIZZA AND BEER! and pasta and cookies. They were pumping Prince in the beer tent! (I never saw this in NYC or Boston.) Bottom Line: you get certain perks with a smaller marathon. Easier race day morning. Better food at the finish. A personal connection to the fans on the course. And the cache of a GCM T-shirt (which I will wear as proudly as any Boston jacket). Like I said, I have some perspective here having run races of all sizes. GCM exceeded my expectations and I would certainly recommend it for regional runners and even nationwide runners looking for a flat, medium-sized, well-organized, Spring race. You are always taking your chances with Toledo weather but everything else is handled well. Train hard, stay positive, and make it happen. Good luck to all of you.

Very well run race!

I fully understand the reason for the course change this year. However entering the start corrals was a challenge. Coming from the staging area where the port-a-potty's were to the corrals was very congested. This resulted in slower runners just getting into the start area as the race was set to begin.

Flat and fast many shaded park miles

This race has truly been improved over the years, better expo, course and finish party and two shirts, but be prepared the finish party and the beer stops at 6 hours on the dot. Many miles of rails to trails and scenic parks too. The course was altered a little this year due to construction and seemed to make it even better.

Everything went well. The Expo was great, the course was pretty, the support was wonderful and the food at the finish was perfect. Getting to the starting line was easy. Great job!

Mostly well organized

The change at the start seemed to cause some difficulties. The pace teams had a hard time finding the Dave's Running person before the race. Because of the new starting line and the 5K course taking up some of Secor, the start seemed much more congested for a longer period of time. It was hard for the pace groups to really get going.

First Marathon, lots of fun

This was my first marathon (second year trying). I had so much fun as I took it all in from early at the starting line to reading all the signs and taking in the wonderful scenery. Even though I hurt from not getting all my training done I am looking forward to doing this again.

Mostly great... except for the traffic cones

I've heard a lot of great reviews of the Glass City Marathon... and am disappointed. The marathon was great for 22 of the 26.2 miles... but there were about 4 miles that were awful. These miles were running in the bike lane of a busy-ish road. There were traffic cones along the bike lane, but cars still zipped by too close. We ran *with* traffic, so didn't see cars coming... only heard them, and then felt their wake as they passed. The usual Finish Line was under construction, so we didn't finish in the Glass Bowl... but finished in the parking lot. On the flip side, the shirts were GREAT, and packet pickup well organized. The weather was perfect, and the people were friendly.

Low Key, Good Course

Overall, Glass City is a relaxed and fun event worth running. The race starts and ends on the University of Toledo campus which is located in the northwestern part of the city. The location facilitates both access on race day and inexpensive lodging. This year, the start and finish were moved due to construction in the stadium (the usual finish). That move resulted in some logistical challenges at the start. The bag drop was a couple blocks from the start and went smoothly. There were not enough portapottys and they were located in front of the start (near the bag drop) so runners walking to the start could not enter the corrals in the correct area. Even with a 10 min delayed start many runners were not ordered according to pace, which resulted in a congested first 1-2 miles. After that, everything went smoothly. The course was well supported with plenty of (mostly gentle) turns and just a few elevation changes to keep it interesting. Some miles after the half point are on open roads but this did not seem unsafe. Some roads along the course did have significant potholes or other uneven surfaces (hard winter?). The last 5 miles or so are on a straight rail-to-trail paved path where the water stops are not as close as one might want them if the weather would have been much warmer. The finish line area was efficient and the post-race area was great with lots of food, drinks, beer (2 free for runners) for everyone, including spectators. Race swag was nice. The 40th anniversary finishers medal looks great. There was also a beer mug (gotta have something to put your 2 free ones into). Awards looked minimal, a glass plaque, that you had to wait for even though it was not customized in any way. Forgot the expo. This was very good for a smaller race. Easy, close and free parking. Well attended and some really good vendors. Might be time for bigger quarters given the crowd size but it worked.

Well run event.

Finish line needs work. A long straight finish would be better. Not much space at water stops. They could be situated such that you could run through the stops. They assume you are getting liquids. Pacers should run even splits. The 3.40 pacers decided to bank several minutes. Would have been nice to know. I would have been better without them (my fault for not asking about strategy!) Terrific giveaways - great value! Starting the full and half 10 minutes apart would limit road congestion too.

Beautiful course with tons of spectator support

Love this race. The only negative I have is the parking. It's unclear where half marathon participants should park. The marathon parking lots were closed, so you couldn't leave. That should have been communicated better.

Overall great race! (was my first though)

The only bad thing I would have to say is the 4 mile long path before the finish (up to mile 25). There were hardly any water stops & ZERO bathrooms. that was definitely the worst part of the race, felt like it was never ending.

Race Improvements for 2017

I think you should consider having at least 10 porta potties at St. Ursula instead of just 4. Many people seem to need to use the restroom at that time and it would speed up the process. I would consider closing the East bound side of Brint Road as the bike lane isn't wide enough for two people to run side by side and not get hit by a car. Hopefully the City of Toledo will fix their roads as the start of the race was bad with the potholes on Bancroft.

A fast, cool course with lots of swag and support.

I registered for Glass City 2016 for a Boston attempt (I got it!). GC is a fast course, with a few turns and runs through metro parks. The weather was about perfect for an Ohio April day. LOTS of volunteers and water/Gatorade/Gu stations. LOTS of swag (I'm not 'into' that, but it's nice when you get it). I'd definitely run it again. It starts/ends on UT's campus, which is very accessible. Not too much crowd support that I noticed, but I wore an iPod and 'was in the zone' for the race.

6th time running GCM

You guys do a great job with volunteers, course, expo, getting information out! Start this year was definitely different. I wasn't sure if I would like the change of the finish not being in the glass bowl. actually liked how close all the spectator where at the finish! I certainly sped up at the finish to finish strong in front of so many spectators! It was awesome! Also - love love love the BIG medal!

Very tightly packed at the beginning of the race; hopefully when the start line is moved next year there will be room to breathe. Good volunteer support, especially at the many turns. Medal is huge - would prefer something smaller.

What a fun, fast course! Great organization.

The only comment I have to improve the course would be to include a water-stop somewhere between mile 22 and 24 or something like that. There was a long stretch without water towards the end of the race. Not a big deal, but it would have been nice.

Finish and results disorganized

I found the course to be great. Enough scenery changes to stay fresh, and the spectators and volunteers were awesome. Parking was really mishandled. Waiting so long to park that you're late is not acceptable. Then by the time you're finished the refreshments are nearly gone already. I'm sorry, but half marathoners and relay runners should not be able to use these accommodations up before the full marathon runners are finished. Or, have separate areas for the groups. The online results are also a bit confusing. To have each individual placed by the clock time and not their net time is not how I would expect a BQ marathon to be handled.

Great small marathon for a PR

This was my sixth marathon overall and fourth attempt to qualify for Boston. I'm happy to say I'll be heading to Beantown next year. The course was very flat, fast and everything was paved. The course was very well marked with plenty of volunteers helping out. I would highly recommend this marathon if you are looking for a flat, paved course and you enjoy small/medium sized marathons.

Okay race, but not a good course

The marathon course had what felt like a million turns and not enough signs marking the turns. More than a half a dozen times I had to ask volunteers which way to turn when I came to an intersection. One section of the course had us run along the side of a road with traffic for a mile, no cones or anything else separating the race from traffic. At least the course was pretty flat. Spectators were sparse. Aid stations were fine.

Great volunteers & traffic, well marked course

*More bathrooms & better placement (not in front of starting line). Also there were bathrooms available on the course that weren't on the map which is great, but doesn't allow you to plan. ** Results currently have places per clock time not chip time. This is quite upsetting, and I hope this will be adjusted. I thought this was a chip time event like last year!

Ruined a previously really good time for 2016

I love driving to Toledo (from Chicago) for the GCM 1/2 Marathon. This year the organization from the toilets being in soaking uncut grass to the start line facing the wrong way from the toilets, which made it very hard to get to. I was not able to get any food for a long time so I left, I just wanted a bagel or banana. Also the fast flat course was not there. I was a bit disappointed but I will probably come back anyway. People were friendly and the water stations were very nice. I also liked starting on Bancroft, I just wish the organization could have been better,

course isolated

Can't really say anything bad about this event, since I PR'ed. My biggest comments are on the course, it's really hard and challenging to run a marathon, especially on those last miles, where you are running them on a highway with cars driving by. this is dangerous! Runners can faint, fall or trip - AND THERE IS MOVING TRAFFIC NEXT TO THEM. Then, from mile 20+, the hardest of any given race, you put runners on a bike lane, with no spectators, behind people's homes, no shade, no contact with any support. This should be reconsidered, I know it's Toledo, but come'on. think also about that big hill going down at mile 25.9, I saw a few runners fall on that spot because they were sprinting towards the end line and their knees gave up. Again, there was no staff present there to give support. Think about your corrals, there was no coordination and there should be a separate entry to it. volunteers were great! Also, my GPS says that I ran way over 26.2.

Organization was optimal, the course was boring.

This is one of the best organized and operated races I have ever been involved in. This is the 2nd time I have run this. Expo was small but nice, especially having Goodwill to sell throwaways. The only negative was the marathon course is beyond boring; long stretches of the backs of buildings and train tracks. Medal is always great, as well as post race. Plenty of water/aid stations. The organizers do a very nice job...except for the marathon course.

Great Race, Volunteers & Spectators

What a perfect day for the 40th running of the Glass City Marathon !! I ran the Owens Corning Half (2nd Time) and was very happy with the few new course changes this year. During my run on the half marathon course the spectators were awesome and encouraging. Only issue I had, as with last years marathon, are the number of pre-race porta-potties. The lines were extremely long and had to wait mid race to relieve myself. Other than that, it was a first class race and even better volunteer group !!

Pretty good. Better parking signs and music.

All and all, pretty good. Some things that would have helped: Better signage for parking, and then directions from parking to starting line Music at starting line. Arrived at 6:30 or so and it felt quiet. Pump I it up!! :) Start on time. I think we were 10-15 minutes late for gun time. Always a challenge, but keep people moving at end through chute. Route was pretty! Water and Gatorade stations were great! NOTE I ran half marathon.

Very unorganized startcrowded post race area.

Probably 90% of the runners parked down road from the startso they had to walk back upstream, cross the start, and into those of us already set and ready to go. Was truly unorganized and chaotic, at best. Post race had great drinks and food, but very congested. Pros: great fan support (some quiet areas) and very flat and fast. Easy to PR or Boston qualify. Nice swag as well.

Nice smaller race, still a tough BQ.

I selected this race as a hopeful BQ after researching past results. This was my first marathon and I unfortunately did not get a BQ. I recommended this race. Pros: - The course is flat. - Water/aid stations and the volunteers were perfect. - Ideal weather for the 2015 race. - Good pacers, though they were a little fast in the first half of the race. - Nice finish and post race accommodations. - Very organized. - Inexpensive to stay at a hotel less than 10 miles away. Easy to find reasonably priced pre-race meal. Easy to get to the race and park leaving extra time in the morning. Cons: - The overinflated number of BQs achieved is NOT broken down by sex. The high rate favors a lot of female BQs. - Most sections of the last 6-8 miles were lacking supporters when they are needed most. For a medium sized race this is to be expected. - Too many of the miles (~30%) were on a path which can get crowded.

Thanks again Glass City!

A couple of quick thoughts... 1. Expo - well done, but handing out bottled water was completely wasteful and unnecessary. Given our recent drinking water ban, lets celebrate that we can drink clean, cheap tap water, and skip the bottled water. 2. Race - enjoyed the race, the cones on the bike path were all messed up, and caused a few problems. That needs corrected. 3. Post Race - the lines got a little crazy for food, etc. Feels like that could be pretty easily fixed. The real issue was the bag drop. Why in the world did you move it east of the course? Everyone had to cross the race course to go get their bag then come back again. There was ample room in the main lot for the bag drop, and it would have saved a lot of people from dashing across the course all day long. Other than these minor items, it was another great event. Thank you again for a wonderful experience and for representing Toledo and NW Ohio so very well. I look forward to running again in the future!

average organization, ppl of Toledo made up for it

Course was fantastic with the exception of mile 8 (and maybe 9?) the long stretch of sidewalk along the fence. Boring, difficult part of the race, no energy. Expo was chaotic, too cramped, boring vendors. Organization of the race was good...but info about clothing drop was basically non existent prior and not well organized at race. Needed more portapotties, lines were way too long, and needed more volunteers for handing out food after race. Waiting 30 minutes for a banana, while freezing?! not healthy. I wasn't impressed with my pacer (not bad, just did nothing to energize the group like other pacers do). I got bored and dropped back, especially since it was my 2nd half in 2 days. My specific issue, of course, but wish he would have been more excited/participatory. Pictures are great...but RIDICULOUSLY overpriced. Really bummed. :( I've gotten cheaper from rock and roll half marathons. Because of the course, awesome spectators, and great after party (glasses, band) I have been recommending this race.

Excellent race for a PR and BQ

This was marathon #5 for me. People recommended to BQ since it is flat. I was surprised at the expo and the race with so many people with their Boston gear and also, so many runners like myself doing the race for BQ. It is a small race, but makes everything very convenient. You can get your bib in 30 min.. very easy. In terms of the race, it offers pacers for every 5 min. The water/Gatorade stations are very well managed. So easy to go in and out. It is a small race, so you don't have to battle past slower runners and the course opens up very well on the 1st mile. Again, easy if you want a PR. There are some spots with spectators, but if you are used to big marathons (I ran LA, Chicago and NYC), this will be different here. Is a race to focus on your pace and nail it down. The last home stretch (mile 21 and on) is almost a straight shot. There's a small hill (you can't even noticed if you train in some hills) then after that is downhill (very small slope but is down). I can see how some people will struggle here since is a trail, not too many people and it looks the same. However, for me, this was a 5 experience. I forgot to say I hit a 12 min PR, and got a BQ with 3:32 (BQ time needed 3:40). I was targeting a 3:36 but found this course easy to hit a 3:32. Well done Toledo. Great race. And for $50 you get a tshirt, medal, beer glass, pizza and pasta and beer! Also, is very easy for spectators to drive and see you at multiple spots. My husband and small kids saw me in 3 spots.

Amazing value but a crowded start and odd finish

This certainly is the best value going and the race is very well organized. They had corral assignments but it seemed no one went where they should (as there was no enforcement) so we had many slow runners ahead of us. We were surging and weaving for over 3 miles to get into pace. The course overall is decently scenic but has many twists and turns and you have to be careful you do not take a wrong turn. Crowd support is good and the people of Toledo are great. I was not keen on the finish, you are exhausted...you want to see the finish line and reel it in. They have you winding and twisting then finally direct you towards the building. You enter and see the start line but not the finish...don't stop as the finish is 100 yards to a corner then 100 yards from the corner. After the race was amazing with excellent food and beer. As much as I am critical I would do it again!

Stop for traffic really impacted my experience.

Everything was so fantastic until I picked up the pace to beat my time goal. Settled into a fast pace for me only to be stopped for traffic somewhere around the 30K mark. I thought it was a closed course and this really bothered me.

Great course and organization

The expo was at a convenient campus location and packet pick up was quick and easy. The expo itself was fine for a smaller marathon. The course begins and ends on the very nice University of Toledo campus. It's flat, fast and a picturesque course. You run through some beautiful neighborhoods and on paved paths in a very nice park. The water/Gatorade stations were plentiful and staffed by friendly and capable people. The nature of the course wouldn't lend itself to big crowd support, but the crowds there were very friendly and supportive. It was sunny with the temps in the mid 30s at the start and upper 40s when I finished, perfect! Finishing in the football stadium was fun and the plentiful post race food and beer outside the stadium was very welcome. One aspect I did find odd, not that it changed my excellent experience, but the split times from mats on the course are at odd distances, not the usual, 5k, 10k, half, etc. I don't know why they deviate on that? This race is in my top couple marathon experiences, very well done.

Definitely recommend this Marathon!

Well organized, scenic, flat, not too big (fewer than 1,000 marathoners finished, still record participation), very suitable for a BQ. Expo was great for a smaller race. Great idea to have Goodwill throwaways for $1 - $2. Sufficient parking although there were a few bottlenecks in the morning. The after party and the food were good as well. The only negative is the marathon course was longer than 42.2 KM. Both my wife and I had over 42.4 KM on our Garmins. Overall, a race I definitely recommend.

Course was poorly marked returning thru Wildwood

First, this is an excellent run overall. I've finished twice, and very much enjoyed it both times. Only issue was returning thru Wildwood. The turn off Corey Rd. into the park was poorly marked (poor sign location). I turned into the adjoining neighborhood, not noticing the paved trail that we were supposed to follow until I doubled back out of the neighborhood. The runner following me made the same mistake, and the runner behind her only spotted the trail because she saw that we were confused. I seem to recall that in 2013 a race official/volunteer was posted there to ensure we stayed on course. Maybe we need to run close enough to touch the sign? Similarly, in Wildwood, the first right turn was at a train intersection, marked with a Metropark sign (white with black print, didn't mention the race) and white tape on the ground; no person there to direct. This was the first turn not marked with a blue sign-yellow arrow, so it was very confusing. A second confusing trail intersection (also right turn) had NO sign, but at least a person to direct. And returning past the 'manor house,' no race personnel were apparent, so relay participants tried to guide us thru that segment. Did you run out of blue signs? And volunteers?

Great race - would do again!

My comments are for the half marathon - finished in 2:08 to give context. It was the first time I have run Toledo and did so due to all of the positive comments from the year before. I thought everything was extremely well done and would definitely do again. Positives - course was scenic, flat and you end going down hill towards the finish and then into the stadium. Glass finisher's mug was a nice touch. Good selection of food and beer at the end. Parking was easy. Weather was perfect. Runners were friendly and had good race etiquette. Volunteers were plentiful and well trained. Cons (all of these are minimal): Really could have used more porta-potties at the start. Lines for food and beer should be better labeled as you couldn't tell where the food tent started since it wasn't marked. Also, there needed to be more food lines as it took a while to get food (handing out bags was a nice touch). Fan support was OK, probably could go into either category. It would be nice to turn on videoboard so fans can see themselves finish. Overall I have run 21 half marathons and would put this into my top 5.

more portalets-more spectators-more Toledo

I graduated from UT and I considered this race to be a homecoming for me since I haven't been back since I graduated in 2000. We got there early and still got stuck in the portalet lines because the line was so long. It made us not get into our corals and we had a slow start. Also wish more people were present on the course. Nothing gets a runner more motivated than the cheering of spectators; gives you that full body tingle while running...I only got this once during the entire course.

Still poor course management

I last ran the marathon in 2013 and specifically commented on how poorly marked and directed the course was. I grew up in Sylvania and have run many portions of this course since 1977, so I know the area. Now I read how the women's leader was misdirected and forced to run extra - yet still beat the course record, but forfeited a potential Olympic qualifier. Time for new race management - someone who is on the roads running and understanding the race participant's view. Someone who listens to comments so that mistakes aren't repeated. Others in these comments had concerns about course marking as well.

Very enjoyable course as a lot of it is on paved trails or thru a park so it's a nice mix from just roads. Crowd support is improving as the number of runners increases, but is the one thing that could be better. Would like to see some bands added to the course along with other entertainment. The course has a few rolling hills but overall very flat for a marathon. Everything is very well-organized.

A great, scenic, flat course!

Really enjoyed my marathon on 4/26/2015. Well organized - loved the astroturf in the stadium. Only criticism is that the merge in the park could use better signage to the 19-21 mile section - found it slightly confusing and slowed me almost to a walk so I could verify the route from spectators. Did feel the final to the finish line was a bit long had 26.35 on my Garmin, a friend - 26.4. Would run it again though!!

Love this event! It gets better every year :)

The event improves every year. I liked that Goodwill was at the expo selling sweatshirts. The crowds and signs were awesome on the half course and the water stops were well-run. I have done the GCM half 5 times and 10 halfs in all since 2010.

Amazing experience!

This was my first run ever. I never ran a 5k, 10k, or any other race. This experience was incredible! Well organized, a lot of volunteers, thank you very much for making this a great experience for me. I will be here again next year for the 40th!

Terrific course.

Loved the course. Flat and fast with nice mix of scenic neighborhoods and paved trail. Very little time spent on busy roads. I would run this race again without hesitation. Post party was excellent, beer mug with 2 free fills was a nice touch.

Excellent Course

Only negative was that the relay handoff locations were very hard to get to. We missed one b/c our runner simply could not get there by car. We were staying with family that lives on Orchard Rd and could not get off their street.

Beautiful flat course with plenty of aid stations

Loved this race! The course was a nice mix of city streets, nice residential neighborhoods, and parks. The aid stations were well-run and plentiful. Loved finishing in the UT football stadium. I would run this race again.

Great race. Finish line idea.

My thought. I understand people like to finish in the glass bowl but I think having the finish line right before the glass bowl would best. Then all runners would be forced to go onto field as a 'runners only'. Where you'd get medal, and have water, chocolate milk, banana, and bagels there. This gives runners a minute to stretch and have a breather. Also this would make spectators line the last 1 mile stretch which would be helpful for the runners as motivation.

Exceptional Experience - flat scenic PR course

- The organizers should pat themselves on the back, this was an exceptional experience (the PR and BQ certainly helped) - Largely flat, scenic course - Size was about perfect for the course which was narrow in some places - The finish in the stadium is unique and pretty cool - Not many spectators, but this was just fine and let me focus on the task at hand; however, the crowds at the relay exchanges elicited powerful motivating cheers as we passed - The temperature was perfect, but I could not quite figure out why the wind always seemed to be in my face - I looked at a number of spring marathon options before I selecting the Glass City Marathon (Toledo) and saw many positive, prior ratings and now having just completed, I can attest they were completely right

a fine, flat marathon; good value

Overall impression is that this is a really nice and well-run event, IF you're familiar with it and know how to navigate the venue. Pros: - Flat course - Frequent fluid stops, most with portajohns, several with Gu and/or orange slices - Timers on the course calling out elapsed time and pace - Good amenities for the price - Especially nice age group awards Cons: - Venue logistics were fine EXCEPT there were no volunteers or signs to provide direction on site and the incomplete information available online (almost nil in the packet) made it impossible to self-prepare ... everything on site was labeled, but you had to find it first - The course was not closed to traffic - Many many turns, very few marshals, faded old pavement marking - 2015 volunteer shirts were inconspicuous, made them difficult to spot

Great Experience !!

At 51 years old, this was my first experience in a long distance event ever (half marathon). I just started running a little over a year ago. I must say, although challenging for me personally, it was very gratifying to have competed in and finished my first half marathon (Respectable 2:14:20) ! From the Expo and packet pick-up to the morning pre-race activities, The GCM is a class act with a great volunteer base. Heard complaints of not enough porta-pottys to crowded start corrals. I had no problems because I was there early so I could avoid any inconveniences. Thanks to all who made my first experience a memorable one and hoping many in the future !!

Best finish line EVER!

This was my first marathon and from beginning to end, everything was top notch. I loved every single thing about it. You all should be very proud. The ONLY thing I would criticize is the size of the logo on the tech shirts. That much printing makes the shirts hot when you wear them. It is TRULY the only criticism I have. Thank you for making this a memorable experience for me. My boyfriend and I will be back for sure next year. We also stayed overnight at the Ramada Inn and were very happy there.

I run Glass City year after year!

This is my fourth year running a race at the Glass City Marathon. I have run the full once, the half twice and this year I tried the 5k. I have never been disappointed at Glass City. The race is handled with expert precision. Everything from the volunteers, to the water stops, to the great runner's gifts all set this race apart from anything else I have experienced. They even send a keepsake results book after the race!

Flat, well-organized course

Very well-organized course with tons of great spectators! The half and full started at the same time and the course was pretty congested the first 8 miles or so (especially when they put all of us on a narrow bike path). There were times that I couldn't even see the signs where to turn since there were so many people. There were plentiful, well-marked water stops. Miles were clearly marked. The course is mostly suburban and didn't have any unique scenery. Lots of paved running paths. Finishes in the UT stadium, with a nice post-race party. I sent in my registration since the online credit card fee was really high (>$6!) and they misspelled my name on the bib. Other than that, very pleased with this race. Thanks, Toledo!

A Great Race!

I signed up for this race due to the location, time of year, and overall reviews that it received on Marathon Guide. It met my expectations, and I would highly recommend this race to anyone looking for a fast and flat, mid-sized race in the spring. Pros: Price-The registration fee is the most reasonable I have paid; and it includes a quality dry fit short sleeved shirt, a glass mug, great food, and drinks. Corrals- Very easy to access, not overly crowded, and well displayed according to expected finish time. Course- Flat, with a few rolling hills. Furthermore, for those of you that bring a 'cheer squad' with you, the race course is very accessible to spectators. My husband and son were able to drive to 5 different points along the course to cheer me on! Fuel- There was more than an adequate supply of both water, Gatorade, and gels. In fact, there were so many gel stations, that I actually considering taking extras to hoard for after the race! Haha! Also, the volunteers knew exactly how to hold the cups, and they were very clear on whether they had water or Gatorade. Finish- At the University of Toledo stadium, with great food options (pizza, pasta, fruit, licorice, and cookies) Cons: Bib Pick up- It was a decent sized expo, however, the bib pick up was kind of inconvenient. Prior to entering the expo, you had to electronically get your bib number from a small, poorly marked station at the entrance to the expo. I walked all the way back to the bib pickup, when the volunteers informed me that I needed to go to the entrance to get my bib number. Course- It was a semi-flat course for the majority of the race. My complaints would be 1. the half marathon starting with the full marathon is always scary to me. 2. The last 3-5 miles were brutal with the headwind we were up against. Overall, I highly recommend this race, and I look forward to running it again!

The best half marathon course I have run

I ran the Toledo Half Marathon for the first time this year and it was probably my favorite one I have done so far I have done 7 other half marathons. The course was beautiful and flat - by far the nicest course I have run through great neighborhoods and a beautiful metro park. The packet pickup and the set-up the morning of the race made everything super easy! I will definitely be doing it again in 2015!

Good Medium Sized Marathon

I ran this marathon with the hopes of improving my previous best time and was able to run a 3:04. The race size and location made race day very easy. In fact, this race had the best race day logistics I have experienced in all my marathons. We got from our hotel to campus (start and finish is on the University of Toledo campus) within ten minutes. We did not have to wait to park. We walked to the starting area where there were port-a-potties and tents to wait in (it was 35 degrees at the start). Corrals were easily accessible. The course is relatively flat with only a few rolling hills. The course has a mix of roads and paved trail and is run through scenic metroparks. The race has a nice finish into the football stadium. My only complaints are that there are stretches of the course that are run alongside highway. On race day it was extremely windy and runners had to run 5+ miles into a strong head wind. Also, fan support was lacking in areas. There are some stretches of trail where there are very few fans (as expected with small/medium size races). However, the scenery gives you something to look at. I highly recommend this race for someone who wants a medium sized, affordable race and is looking to run a flat/fast course.

Incredible experience!

This was my first half marathon and I am so glad I chose the Glass City as my course. The organization was beyond reproach. The course ran us through really scenic areas. It was the spectators, though, who really made it special. I would recommend the Glass City Half Marathon to anyone. I will be back next year. Maybe I'll be brave enough to run the marathon.

FABULOUS, FUN, FAST & FLAT MARATHON

OMG! Loved, loved, loved this marathon. Loved the course, loved the organization & support, and most of all, the post-race festivities. I'm still bragging about it! Where else can you pay $60 which pays for your race, a tech shirt, free beer glass mug, a few free beers, pasta, pizza, fruits, bagels, etc.? The only thing I wasn't crazy about were some of the volunteers yelling out 'your pace' time as you ran by, but learned to ignore it for the most part (my Garmin does the job for me, lol.) I would def. do this one again!

FANTASTIC BQ race!!

This is the third time I have run Glass City and it has honestly gotten better each time. Everything was highly streamlined and there was no guessing 'what do I do now' or 'where do I go'. This is a well run BQ race. The 1/2 and relay sell out fast and with such long course limit times, even the slow runner, as I am, can safely run without feeling like people are waiting on you to close the course. I'll be back year after year!

I enjoyed the course. The part on central avenue about mile 19 was harder because of the uneven road and stones. But it was mile 19.... good water stops! I had someone run with me from. Mile 25 to finish from the mile 25 stop. That was a blessing from the Lord!

Fast and flat with nice stadium finish

Smaller budget friendly race that was well organized. Nice stadium finish with a beer mug handout that you can fill with (2)complimentary Toledo micro-brew beers. PR course for sure and cooler weather than other later May races lately. Downsides would be crowded starting miles but that's not uncommon. Not spectator friendly since family and friends have not many options except see you start and finish at the stadium. Bike path in final miles are a bit lengthy and tedious. Overall I would definetly run this race again and recommend it.

Really Enjoyed an Excellent Course, Fast & Flat

This was my 11th marathon and my first in Ohio. Course was billed as fast and flat which it was. I'm from Florida and although I didn't consider it 'Florida Flat' I didn't have any 'hill' issues. Weather for 2014 was perfect. Low 40's at the start and it never got out of the 40's. Wind was a slight factor towards the end but nothing horrible. Course support was excellent. Water and aid stations were plentiful as well as GU stops. The half breaks away around Mile 8 so I thought it was going to get pretty lonely out there but it never did. In the neighborhoods there were plenty of spectators cheering. On the paved trails there weren't as many people but there were still a lot of cheering volunteers. I never felt alone or in no man's land. Race finishes at the University of Toledo's stadium which is a nice touch. Finisher's medal was a nice one too. You get a really nice engraved glass beer mug since the Glass City is where Corning glass is made. Two drink tickets on the bib were used to fill it up at the after party! I finished in 3:46 and there was plenty of post-race food still available - pizza, oranges, bananas, pretzel sticks, Twizzlers and beer and water. Tented areas helped you get out of the wind and you could listen to live music and just hang out. Overall - A+

Awesome experience

This was my first half marathon. I am 48 and have only completed a few 5k's. It was an awesome experience and accomplishment knowing that I completed it! It was awesome to see the residents in the neighborhood holding signs, clapping as we went by and their support along with representatives of the marathon and their support at the water stations. It would be nice to see more residents out by the streets supporting us along the way. I didn't finish fast but I finished and that's all that matters. I ran with my daughter, her husband and my son's fiance. All of us were first time marathoners! Great experience.

Wonderful race, great value!

Incredible value for your money! Beautiful, scenic course, energetic helpful volunteers where needed. Medium size, well organized expo with a variety of products and great bargains. The cost, for what you get, is very reasonable. You still get a commemorative glass mug, a nice tech t-shirt, a great medal, and all the food you can handle at the end. There was enough left for the last finishers. They were generous 'within reason' for those finishing over 6 hours. This is a friendly, enjoyable race. And it would be hard to find a flatter course. Two good places for spectators: Wildwood and the stadium. Great finish in the stadium.

Fast course

Last year I BQ'd this course, this year there was a strong wind coming out of the East... didn't adversely effect me until we got to the 2 miles (17 & 18?) heading straight east...A guy on a bike was pretty cool and tried to let me draft behind him, but he was really trying to help his friends and they were running faster than me. I couldn't recover after this. I'll be back next year. As for the spectators, I gave it a 5 even though I'm sure many won't. There are many places where there aren't any spectators. But for people who train alone like me this is fine. The one's that were there were great and they deserve a 5+. As for organization, I don't anything bad to say about it. I wouldn't want that job. Every year I get there with plenty of time to spare (no parking issues), it starts on time, and there's plenty of gel and gator aid on the course. Not sure what else anyone would expect. I've never stuck around for the food or beer, so I can't comment on that.

Good value, organization needs help

Glass City was the first marathon I ever ran way back in 1979 when I was in high school and growing up in Sylvania. It was a fairly well respected race but was held on very warm Father's Day weekend on a very dull out and back course. I thought it would be fun to come back and run in my 'home town' race. Pros: Great value. This is a lower cost race. About a thousand runners in the marathon, with many more half marathoners starting at the same time. Nice medal and bonus glass mug for finishers. Even some merchandise for age group winners. Fast course with only minimal rolls mainly early on through a very nice residential area, and at 18.5 to 19.5 miles. Plenty of water stops. Good email updates from the race organizers. Easy packet pickup Cons: Growing up in the area I have run portions of the course hundreds of times. But if I hadn't studied the course map ahead of time, I would have missed a couple of turns. The rain kept the spectator count down, but they needed marshals through some of the many turns beyond the half point. The orange paint used to mark arrows on the road wasn't real obvious, especially with the rain. I had no one in sight in front to help judge the course. In a crowd this probably wouldn't be as big a problem. Still some cones would help through the more winding areas later on and through the metropark as you switched from bike trail to sidewalk to parking lots. The timing service apparently had problems. The athlete tracker was WAY off for me, and the order of finish and finisher times was changed at least twice within the 48 hours after the race. Why the split times were placed where they were, and why they were so wrong was not good. Finally, the post race organization was bad. As others have said, there was no provision to protect the drop bages from the rain. The tents in the post race area were packed with runners and non-runners, and no clear direction as to where the food was. I was given a paper bag (in the rain) with an apple, one cookie, a mini licorice rope and offered a soggy, cold piece of pizza. And I finished under 3 hours - I can't imagine how bad the food must have been for later finishers. Needless to say, the paper bag didn't even make it back to the car in the rain. Sorry for the sour grapes, but I feel like it's my hometown race from growing up, and it just seems like bad decisions took the shine off the race. Great race to choose if you want help with a BQ

Fast course

I got my Boston goal here and it is as fast as advertised. Aid stations are plentiful. Bathrooms are fine. I couldnt stay for party after. And here would lay into the complaints that everyone else is saying as well. The traffic getting to marathon for parking and leaving is the only bad parts to this marathon. They need to do the post race party in a different area to alleviate some of the parking issues. Then i had a half mile walk back to the car after running a marathon was bad. I could barely walk and it was pouring out. If there was some kind of tram or busing system to parking lots that would be ideal.

Nice, if cold Marathon

I thought everything was pretty good. Only real improvement I think would be to have the half marathoners start a half hour later. Pretty congested early on. Also, there were some weird spots for the relayers to switch. But overall was good, other than I got a flat tire when I arrived.

Awesome Experience

Overall - I loved the experience. This was my third time running the half marathon with Glass City. My two suggestions for improving the run: 1. I was confused on where to go for food and beverage. I saw the tents but they were very crowded. The tents could have also been more crowded than normal because of the rain and I didn't want to push through the crowds to find food and drink. 2. If the bag drop is going to be kept outside, please let me know. Of course I could have asked and then thought of putting my bag in a waterproof bag. When I finished my run, everything was soaked which prevented me from staying to enjoy the festivities.

Flat course

The weather was awful for the race but that's obviously out of anyone's hands! Course was nice and flat, nothing spectacular to look at, but a good PR course. Water stops were good, there were times when spectators were on the course at random times walking in the opposite direction because part of the course is on a recreation trail open to the public which made things congested at times. Expo wasn't much but nice. Finish line was nice to be in the stadium. Since it poured the entire race, would have been nice for the gear drop area to be under a tent, keeping our clothes dry for after the race. Also having a specific gear drop bag would have been nice too, something plastic and a bit larger.

Great race for the price

Excellent value and the course was flat and interesting - runs through flat trail areas and some lovely neighborhoods. Needs to put the bag drop area under a tent or indoors as our gear was left in the rain this year. It rained for the entire duration of the marathon. Also need a fix for the morning traffic tie ups to get into the onsite parking.

Nice Small City marathon

In my quest for the 50 states, I picked Glass City simply based on the fact that the race is close to a friend who lives in Detroit. The course is fairly flat but you don't get to see much of Toledo. I would say around 10 miles of the course is on a paved running trail running thru parks or under power lines. I would have enjoyed a jaunt thru downtown and a run by the baseball stadium. The weather was a nice temp but a constant drizzle for my 4 hours. I stayed with the 4:10 pace group for the majority of the race. The pace leader did inform us that he would be running 2 or 3 seconds ahead of pace to bank 2 minutes and because of the wind tunnel at mile 25 (which we did face and slow down for about a quarter mile). Two people did keep questioning our pace but I can't tell the difference between a 9:29 pace and a 9:32 pace. The expo was very nice for a race this size. The post race amenities were pretty good (pizza, banannas, cookies, twizzlers, bagels, beer). It was soggy from the rain but there was not much that could be done. My biggest complaint was the lack of showers that were promised by the organizers. I encountered a dozen runners who were wondering around the building that volunteers directed us to but none of us could find any locker rooms that were unlocked.

Pretty Well Done Event

A lot of flat areas on bike paths make for an easy run. No significant hills to speak of. Nice finish in a stadium. Good medal and a beer mug. Plenty of beer & pizza after I finished in 3:57. The only downside (other than a serious lack of quality restaurants) was the traffic backups getting into the start area. Doesn't UT host football games in the Fall and have some system in place for getting people in there efficiently? Can't they use the same system for this event too?

Ran last year had to do it again

This is one of the best races out there for the price.. With Races starting to charge over $100 for an entry this race still makes it affordable. Its a flat and fast course with well run aid stations.. GU at almost every one. The shirt and medal are top notch and they even give you a finisher mug with a place to go fill it. Police did an awesome job with traffic. They have volunteers calling out times on the course and everyone gets announced as they are finishing in the stadium The only thing i didn't like on the course was the wooden bridge (could be it was my second marathon in two days couldn't pick my feet up)and the pizza at the end could have been a little warmer but i also got there late waiting for friends to finish.

Poorly Organized

Good morning, I would just like to comment on a couple of logistical items that directly affected my post-race impression of the Glass City Marathon. I finished at 4:35:53 - just to give you a time of reference. After completing the marathon I was hungry and thirsty. Yes, you already know this but what you don't know is that there weren't any bananas or pizza left when I arrived at the finishers' tent. There were scarcely any bagels left either. And, there wasn't even any beer left! I know that beer is not one of the best things after a marathon but who cares - you're tired, thirsty, and totally drained and you are looking for anything that will make any part of that disappear. Finally, I was totally shocked to see all the friends and family members eating and drinking the things that I needed and paid for with my marathon fee! To put things in perspective, I want to describe my experience in DC last October when I ran the Marine Corps 10k. As you already know, the USMC marathon is one of the biggest and prestigious events in the country so I am not trying to compare the two races. But what I am trying to describe is how they finished their race. Also, I do understand that Toledo and DC do not have the same size budget. When I was heading towards the finish line I didn't have spectators and other runners (unlike when I rounded Savage Arena and was headed for the finish line and I had lots of other racers who had already finished their race and were leaving with their friends and families) walking on the course. However, what I did have was a well-constructed course where only the runners could go. As I crossed the finish line and continued to walk ahead there were several lines I could enter. As I exited my line a medal was placed around my neck and I continued on to the next line. This line had volunteers on both sides. By the first person, I was given a plastic bag. As I walked through the line I was given a bottle of water, a banana, a bagel and a box containing (OJ, hummus, energy bar, nut mix, and a couple of other things) to put into my bag. Once I exited the line with my bag of nourishments, I could meet with friends or family or continue ahead to the finisher's area where they had many, many vendors giving out free samples to help replenish the runners and promote their products. Overall, a great experience! Finally, please don't take this email as a bashing of the Glass City Marathon but rather as a way to improve upon Toledo's marathon by bringing more runners and sponsors to create a more memoriable experience for future runners. Thank you,

Hidden Gem!

Great, race it's one of the best kept secrets as far as midwest marathons go. It is small and there were not too many spectators between miles 12-16, but I don't mind that. Organization was spectacular, course is super fast, and is a perfect course if you are trying to qualify for Boston. I had a 5 min p.r. and didn't have my best race. Parking was a tiny issue but there were plenty of other places to park other than 200m from the start if you did your research.

'Holy Toledo' - Great job!!

A well organized professional event on a flat (sometimes shady) and 'fast' course. Everything was easy - lots of pre-race parking - I arrived one hour prior to event and found parking on the west side of the campus (by the law school) - only about 1/2 mile from start finish. Big props to organizers for finding a race tracking technology that actually worked - my friends and family (I traveled from out-of-town) were able to receive timely emails, texts and Facebook updates on my progress. Great job!! My only 'small' complaint was that it was a bit difficult to find the food after the race - but when I found it - the food was fine! Plenty of volunteers handing out water and gatorade!

quality event, well done

Pluses: Good, fast course, well marked, plenty of gels, water, sports drink. Thank you police and volunteers. Great medal. Beer. Beer mug. Weather was awesome for running. Minuses: Expo ends at 6 p.m.??!!! How about 8 or 9 p.m.?? We arrived from out of town and barely made it to the expo, which was being packed up. Very scary. PARKING WAS A NIGHTMARE RACE MORNING!!! Again, barely made it in time for the start and we left our hotel 1.5 hours before the start. Had to wait in a long line to get into the ramp. There has to be a better way to efficiently get people parked on campus in time for the start!! You could do shuttles from a different location or open other areas, whatever...but something has to be done. People missed the start...I don't know if I'd come back due to this issue.

Fantastic smaller marathon experience!

Wow, don't know where to start other then I loved this race. I have done some large races (Chicago, Detroit, Boston, etc.) and nothing beats a smaller race like this. Organization was unbelievable, and being able to park 1/4 mile from the start you can not beat. My only warnings would be if you are looking for a course with a lot of spectators, this is not the one for you. Also, there are a decent amount of turns but I think that is splitting hairs. The course is super flat and in my opinion very fast. ENJOY!

Professionally Done...PR course

First of all, we had perfect weather. I was worried about the wind but as someone mentioned from last year, the way the course is designed, the wind was basically a non factor. Water stops were fully manned. Course is flat and very fast. I've run 16 marathons now and all of the big ones but this was the first marathon that had a person telling you your overall pace at given checkpoints...LOVED THAT. I'm going to recommend that to my local marathon. I can't say enough good things about the marathon. Professional from A-Z. Best kept secret out there. I PR'd and so did my 2 friends. Crowd was very supportive considering it is a small marathon. Run this one if you want to run fast! You can tell actual runners are involved with putting it on.

very underrated marathon

I ran this for the 3rd time this year. It is a course with the weather mild 45-50 degrees on a flat fast course through some very nice neighborhoods. An inexpensive, uncrowded marathon. Runners are given a glass mug in addition to the medal. Getting to the start is easy and parking plentiful, beer and food afterwards, aid stations well stocked, great volunteers. I met many first time marathoners in this years race and some well seasoned maniacs as well. If you have any further questions regarding this race, I'll be glad to answer if I can.

Flat, fast course, early race date

Well-run race, highly recommended if looking for a spring race but don't want to chance May temps. Great option for a PR/BQ (I achieved both). Flat, fast course, mostly through pleasant residential areas around U of Toledo and area parks. No hills to speak of. Many miles are on paved bike paths. Weather in late April can be iffy, but for those who prefer the possibility of 'too cold' to 'too hot,' this is for you. Perfect weather (40s, party sunny, light breeze) made for fast times, a course record, and 18%(!) BQ rate in 2012. Well-organized, except course near finish was a little hard to follow, they needed more guides there. Water stations were adequately manned and mile markers well labeled with flag banners (many miles also had a volunteer calling out elapsed time and pace). Finish in the stadium was fun - they showed everyone coming down the chute on the big screen. This is a smaller race. In 2012 there were <1000 running the full, but several thousand more running the half. Marathon and half start together so you have good company until races split about 8 miles out. After that, with the small field, expect to do some running in space unless you're a slower pack runner. Fan support light, but enthusiastic and consistent throughout (except along the busier roadways). Free mug, beer, and pizza at the end!

excellent midsized marathon

this was my 4th marathon, 1st glass city. pros: 1- very nice course overall. good neighborhood choices and use of the metropark trails. a PR type course. 2- stadium finish is always cool 3- awesome mugs to all finishers! 4- nice asics tech shirt (hey some races still give out generic cotton T's) 5- nice sized race expo 6- awesome medal! cons: 1- average crowd support, but then again you really need to hit up the major events for that anyway. 2- slim pickins for food by the time i finished in the 4:20's 3- gnarly wind. this isn't really a complaint just a statement that weather in Toledo that time of year is very unpredictable overall: i could easily see this being a regular spring time marathon for me

Love, Love, Love this event!!

I ran the half marathon and it was a great experience. It is indeed a 'small' race but it packs so much for the punch. I actually loved the size of it. Big enough to not feel like you are running alone but small enough to make it personal. The course is absolutely beautiful!! Nice wide start, twists through welcoming neighborhoods, lots of volunteers and fans, just the right number of water/aid stations, and great scenery! I just can't complain. In fact the course not only made the run but saved it as well. There were horrific winds that day and we barely noticed them thanks to the cover and greenery of the course. The hills were nicely located in the early miles and only the last 1/2 mile was open enough to feel the gusts. However, the stadium finish made it worth the that last bit of torture. Just something about finishing on the field in a stadium. Only improvements are just the perks of the larger races like a bigger expo or bigger after party. If these come at the expense of all the little extras that this race has then I want no part of it. The quality of the expo and after party was exceptional, just small. Little extra perks like the energy gel handed out and the commemorative glass in addition to the usual but very nice medal & t-shirt made it feel worth every penny. Oh, did I mention how reasonably priced this run was?? Early registration pricing was great! Not sure about after that but if you get in early you can't go wrong on this run. I saw a few complaints about port-a-johns but didn't notice an issue here anymore than at any other race I have done. I rarely use them so maybe that is why but that morning I actually did and although the line was long, it went very fast. Overall if you make any changes to this event 1) DON'T CHANGE THE COURSE and 2) don't do it at the expense of all the wonderful little perks that make it so worth-while and worthy of shouting it's praises. I will run it again, volunteer, or recommend it at the first chance I get.

Good half marathon course, but sure for full.

I live here now. Therefore, I ran it. I am disappointed. Pro: 1) The volunteers in waterstops were fantastic. They did the job perfectly. 2) This race offers Gels after 15miler or so, it's super generous. 3) The registration fee is cheap. 4) Super flat course, nice. 5) It's always a plus offering beers. There is more, they gave us a mug, nice. 6) Free parking, how can you beat it!!! Cons 1) Not many spectators along the course. 2) The half marathon course was perfect. HOWEVER, not so much for full. The course is not a closed course. At one point, runners ran on a shoulder of a four-lane road, followed by crossing the four-lane road on our own, this happened a couple times on smaller streets as well. Meanwhile, the policemen tended to close the traffic until last seconds. I even saw the runner stopped because of this. This is just unacceptable. 3) There was no space-blanket offered in the end of race. On my way walking back to the car I was freezing to death, figuratively.

Big-city marathon in a Toledo-sized town!

I actually ran the half marathon. To begin, the organizers did a fantastic job with promotion, especially via social media. Questions on the Facebook page were answered within hours, and email reminders were sent. Training options through Dave's Running were provided (although I trained on my own, I know Dave's is wonderful). The expo was dynamic and fun, with many unique items on sale and a smooth and seamless packet pick-up process. The course was lovely, running through the historic Old Orchard neighborhood, lovely Wildwood metropark and the University Parks trail, with a picturesque finish in UT's Glass Bowl stadium. Announcers, massage therapists, and musicians at the post-race event were professional and a lot of fun. High-quality medals and shirts were provided to finishers, and thousands of photos were posted online, tagged and emailed within days of the event. My first half marathon was a great experience!

Well Run Race!

When I signed up for this race, I was not expecting much - it's a low-price, small marathon. As it turned out, I would put this race in my top 5. Pros: 1) The expo was not huge but there were plenty of vendors and some deals to be had. 2) The course was great - flat and fast - although it was windy (the way the course was laid out, though, the wind was not as much of a factor as I first imagined). 3) The volunteers were great; there were about 4 places where people were stationed calling out pace and where you would finish running that pace (do you get this in a big race?). 4) Aid stations every 2 miles with energy gel at most of them. 5) Finishing in the stadium, someone was calling out the name of every finisher and offering shout outs to those who were finishing their first marathon. 6) The finisher medal was great (all about the bling!). 7) One of the best-fitting race shirts I have. 8) Finisher glass with a beer line outside the stadium. Cons 1) Could you do something about the wind? 2) Shirt was great but needs a little more. 3) You can always use more porta-potties, but I have never been to an event where there is not a line.

Small, but well run, flat and fast

Overall, this is a nice marathon. The start is well organized and not too crowded (even with 2000 half marathoners). Once the full group splits from the half marathoners after 8 miles, the full course gets a little boring and empties out. Support at water stations was great - gels starting at mile 10 or so and lots of gatorade. Weather is always iffy this time of year - we had 25 mph winds and wind chill of 30 degrees. Course is mostly flat and a great BQ marathon.

Needs more Jiffy Johns

I've run this race the past two years. Last year my only complaint was that there were not enough jiffy johns at the start of the race and on the race course. The complaint was sent to the race directors. This year there were still not enough jiffy johns at the start, with several hundred people still in line a few minutes before the start of the marathon/half-marathon and not many jiffy johns on the race course, especially during the first few miles. Also, last year at least the basketball arena had the bathrooms on the various floors open. This year only the bathrooms on the first floor were open, which are not enough. Other than that, I enjoyed the course, medal, and glass mug. I can't comment on the post-race food as I generally don't bother with that stuff.

Good Race - Great Value!

My 28th marathon! The course was very flat and boring. The mile markers for mile 3 and 4 were missing and the start line was very, very narrow. Small things for next year but on the plus: the beer mug was great at the end, and the volunteers were very friendly. A good run all things considered. The only other thing of note is the free parking!

Getting better

Ran this in 2003 and again this year. I love the new course - easy area for start/finish. The course ran on busy streets; please place orange traffic cones to protect the runners. I was running in a large group and we had several cars whiz by us. Do NOT change pacers in the full; it changes the chemistry in the groups. if you are concerned about their ability get stronger/more experienced pacers or start 2 in a group. Nice medal and glass. Also, buy blankets for the finish; you can't control the weather, but you OWE it to the runners to keep them warm at the finish. If the day is warm, save them for next year.

Great Experience

I was very impressed with the race in general. The volunteers were very helpful and the finish in Glass Stadium was great. The medal and the mug were nice touches too! My only complaint was that it seemed like there were large areas devoid of fans; but whenever there were any, they were supportive and excited! The fellow racers were extremely supportive too. In fact, when I was struggling with the 35+ mph winds on the home stretch, two complete strangers told me to follow them. For the rest of the race we paired up, and one would take the brunt of the wind for the other two for a mile and switch. This may have been my first marathon, but I plan on coming back for next year's!

Overall, great course and race

This was my first Glass City Marathon and fourth overall. This race was organized incredibly well - I was impressed. The course was equally as good, with a great mix of in town and scenic running. The water stops were very well run, there were plenty of them, and all of the staff was great. The course itself had a lot of twists and turns, and for the most part they were very well marked. The only glitch was the very last 1/2 mile, which wasn't marked well at all. I believe this was because I was toward the end of the pack, but I had to spend a lot of time searching for which way to go. I think a couple of people left their spots early. The finish in the stadium was cool. The medal was the best I've seen, really awesome. The mug was a great touch and the beer was cold after the race. The pizza was all gone, but there were still bananas, pretzels, bagels and maybe some other food left, which was fine with me. The only real negative could not be controlled, and that was the 25 mph wind, with gusts much more than that. Most of the running into the wind was during the first half, and we had the wind to our back for the last 3 miles. Overall, a great marathon, very well put together, and I would recommend it to everyone.

hidden gem of a race! great swag, great course

PROS: 1. great medal 2. finishers glass mug was a great bonus 3. nice shirt 4. flat, fast course 5. finishing in the stadium 6. easy parking 7. split times announced multiple points CONS: i don't really have any big knocks against this race. the expo was average, but appropriate for the size of the event. not much crowd support, but again it's a smaller race. I would love to see this race later in the spring because the weather is so unpredictable this time of year and like any spring midwest marathon it's ridiculous to train for in the winter. COURSE: takes you through some of the most scenic parts of Toledo. utilizing the UT bike path was excellent. most of the course was protected so you didn't have to worry about cars, it was flat, and the long straightaways are great. finishing in the Glass Bowl was cool- as are all stadium finishes. I always thought a course through downtown, over the hi-level bridge would be cool, but i would hate to change anything about this course as it stands because it was very pretty. for having only 1000 runners in the full marathon, I didn't feel out on the course alone because there were plenty of relay participants. overall, excellent experience! I really look forward to doing this race again.

Great Spring Marathon

After reading mixed reviews about the race, I didn't know what to expect. I thought the course had great scenery, plenty of aid, and a very nice medal AND mug. There were nice areas of support, even in the wind, and the course was not an out-and-back. Out-and-backs in a marathon are not only boring (at times) but also show a lack of creativity and community support, in my opinion. For 50 staters and Michigan runners looking for a new marathon, I would suggest Glass City.

New course makes Glass City much better.

This is the second time I have run the Glass City Marathon, the first being back in 2007. The updated course is much much better than the old one; the addition of the UT campus and finish at the Glass Bowl are a lot nicer than the downtown start/finish of the old course. Very well organized packet pick up and smaller expo on the UT campus the day before and morning of the race. A nice tech short sleeved shirt and nice large finisher's medal were great. Plenty of portable toilets before the race and a few scattered along the course if needed. Water stops were spaced out nicely and well staffed. The course does have some long straightaways, and with under 800 marathoners this year, the race can and does get spread out a bit. Overall a good small/medium sized marathon to check out. The Toledo Roadrunner's group does a good job putting the race on and am glad they have made some changes and adjustments to the Glass City Marathon to improve it and make it a better race.

Mixed Bag

This is an affordable race that offers: a decent expo for a mid-sized race; easy and convenient race day logistics; a warm building to hang out before the race; a reasonably scenic course that is about as flat as they come; plentiful aid stations with more gel stops than advertised; free beer; and a nice medal. The drawbacks: At least 40 turns on the course. It's pretty easy to run 26.4 or 26.5. Mismarked miles. Mile 11 was noticeably short, and Mile 12 long by a similar amount. Mile 16 was WAAAAY short (~1/10th), and 17 was equally long. And how the hell do you end up with TWO 20- Mile marks? This is inexcusable. The one race in a blue moon when you actually need one of those space blankets after the race (20 MPH winds and temps about 50 degrees) there are none to be found. Fix the mile markers, have the blankets available in case the weather warrants them, and tell the aid station at MM25 that a request for water does not entitle them to hand you a beer, and I would run this race again.

Serves a purpose

I will begin on a positive note: it served its purpose, as I qualified for Boston. However, until the course changes, I will not run again. It is a flat, fast course, but it has dreadfully long straightaways. Furthermore, since it has limited space, you can be running solo for awhile. Lastly, the water stops are about every 2 miles, which makes it a little tough. The pre-marathon events (like the kids' run) was fantastic. If you're looking for a time, run it. If you're looking for an experience, skip it.

Great effort for 1st-year course; will get better

Much better than the old course through Rossford, Sidecut Park and south Toledo. We signed up for the full but ended up running the half after injuries eight weeks into training. Can't wait to run the full course next year, especially after all of the kinks have been worked out. Fan support was thin but will get better as the course matures. Need University of Toledo to bring out its marching band/pep band and Rockets mascot.

Very solid, well-run marathon

This was my first finish in a marathon. Overall, I thought that this was a very good marathon. The organization was strong, with a few irritations here and there but not enough to overshadow an exceptional effort. My main issue was post-race, where the food was bland and the pizza all gone (I finished in a sub-4 time, so they should not have already been running out of food). The course was fast and mostly flat, though also somewhat dull; much of the course was run on the bike lanes along 2- or 4-lane roads that were not closed to traffic, which was at times unnerving and overall not really scenic. There were some detours through very nice parks, and the first few miles through wooded residential areas were beautiful, as was the last bit through the U. of Toledo campus. I also enjoyed finishing in the Glass Bowl. I found the crowd support, while sparse at times, to be very enthusiastic, and the volunteers were great. Nice medal, excellent shirt, and cool mug. I would definitely consider running this again next year.

Awesome marathon!!!

Small marathon but really well organized. Has a decent expo, good Asics tech shirt, nice medal, and you receive a glass mug after you finish. There weren't many spectators but there was a new route this year so I would guess there will be even more people out next year. Course is flat and this course is surely a Boston Qualifier. Will be back next year. Great event!!!

Ok in Ohio

Decent race. Could be better, but it has limited flaws. The good outweighs the bad. Pros: 1. Price is right. 2. Good finisher medal and the mug was a nice touch. 3. Finishing in the Glass Bowl was pretty cool. 4. Age group awards were useful and of quality brands (socks and a hat) . 5. Parking was easy. 6. Nice to be able to hang out pre-race in the athletic complex. 7. The people giving splits and times. Nice touch. Cons: 1. Race course was confusing, not marked well, and boring. The only decent sections were the finish and the small loop in the park. 2. The shirt. I registered in time and I still did not get a shirt. The volunteers felt bad and they did find me a t-shirt. I was not mad, but they felt bad. Marathons should have a tech shirt for all that run. 3. A few more bathrooms would have been nice. Lines at the start, but it was better than other races that I have been to (hand washing stations were nice).

I recommend this marathon

The Glass City Marathon 2010 was well organized. The course was varied. A lot of the course was on paved trails, which was great. There were a fair number of turns, but there were plenty of volunteers to point you in the right direction. This was the first time I did this marathon, and I was apprehensive because of some negative comments from previous years. I was pleasantly surprised. The finish inside the stadium was fun and a nice touch. The University of Toledo is a beautiful campus and worked out well as a start/end. I also must thank and commend the professionalism of the medical personnel. I was feeling quite nauseated after crossing the finish, and they checked me out in the medical tent and made sure I was OK. This was my 11th marathon and it was as well run as any I have done. Only possible negative was that portions of the course have you running on the road shoulder. This is common for smaller races, and I personally did not find this to be a problem.

Wow, someone took the gloves off after 2009! YES!!

This new course was AWESOME - 2000% better!! I don't live in the Toledo area (4th time I've run this race) and wasn't sure what to expect, but was quickly greeted by a side of northern Ohio that I've seen running almost every mega-race in just about every big US and Canadian city you can name (my 78th marathon). Trust me when I tell you that it now has as many top qualities as you can find anywhere! I much prefer smaller, more intimate races over the big-name/big-city races and this one came through and is my new #1 mid-size race and shall be highly recommended! Extremely fast, scenic, well staffed, much improved finishing medal; really good start/finish location; and well thought out - except for just a few minor things: 1) Much needed PORT-A-POTTIES in the neighborhoods, and lots of them too!! The treks through some neighborhood areas were really on the long side early on into the race, and to my horror and that others around me, there were absolutely none to be found. I had to hold mine in till an appropriate wooded area came up, where I had no problem fertilizing the local flora. 2) A few short road-construction spots might have needed a cop or something else - perhaps to better ensure that "impatient car" and runners don't collide. Just for a quick time, both runners and cars had the use the same narrowing and corralling lane, and there was not that much "edge" to run on. Very brief it was, and the slight fear of getting wacked by a side-mirror while watching where I stepped did get the adrenaline going a bit though, I have to admit. :) I wish I could add a .5 to the overall stars, but either way the Glass City Marathon is a definite keeper; I'll surely be back! :)

Enjoyable Experience

This was my first marathon, and I really enjoyed it! The course was almost completely flat, which made reaching a goal time manageable. Everyone was really friendly, and the race was fairly well organized. My only complaint was that some of the turns were a bit confusing because the workers stationed there were not overly vocal about which direction to turn. Overall great race though!

Good for a small, local race

Pros: * Medal was awesome * Glass mug was cool * Organization was great * Volunteers were cheerful and manned the plentiful water stations well * Parking was very easy * Price was right Cons: * Post-race food was nothing special: Old bagels, some bananas and cookies Shirt was not that great - not sure why the logo was completely different from the shirt * Course was not my favorite out all the marathons I have done. This course was beyond boring and uninspiring. Granted, there were about 2 to 3 miles that were nice, but the last mile going through parking lots, zig-zagging all over the place to get to the finish, was not fun. The last 5-6 miles on the isolated path with no one around was very difficult mentally. Overall, I gave the course two stars and that was generous. * They offered post-race massages but the massage tables were taken by half marathoners. Long wait. Next time they should have an area for just marathoners. The race was okay for a small, local marathon, but it's nothing too write home about. This is more of a half marathon event.

The little marathon that could!

This was my 2nd marathon, and I thoroughly enjoyed this race. The course was varied (residential and trail), mostly flat, well marked, and there were plenty of supporters out to cheer us along throughout. I thought the race organizers and staff really delivered an outstanding race. The finish in Glass Bowl Stadium was wonderful, and the medals were lovely. This is a wonderful (and fast) small marathon that I'd recommend to anyone.

Glass City

Based on comments from previous years, the marathon was improved for 2010. I thought the course was nice - mostly flat. The course is narrow and you are generally running with a group, but it was never too crowded. This is a good, small marathon and worth doing. If the race gets too big, though, they will have to change the course; it is too narrow during long stretches of the race to handle many more runners. My only complaint is that they need more Jiffy Johns throughout the course. The organization was good - packet pick up went smoothly, as did the start and finish. They should maybe have the volunteers at the end tell runners where to go for the medals and glass mug (under the goal post) and for the food (outside the stadium) - or maybe large signs; it was a little confusing. The medal, tech shirt, and mug were nice.

What at GREAT RACE! WELL DONE TOLEDO

In 1976 I ran the first marathon at the Glass City - and then again in 2010 (the 34th year). I congratulate the organization on a super run. The course was flat, the roads were excellent, and the corners and the numerous water stations were well taken care of. The finish was into the university stadium. What a terrific run. It rates the best so far.

I had a great time. The course was flat and the water stations were plentifull. I think the race was pretty well run; the traffic control was fine except for that one little construction area. The spectators were sparse but friendly. All in all, I would recommend the Glass City - it was a great first marathon.

Positive

This was my first time running a marathon and my experience was satisfying. I thought the organization was great. The course was well marked. The police presence at all of the intersections made running across them very safe. The end was great, coming into Glass Stadium with the announcer broadcasting your name over the stadium PA, accompanied with your finish being shown on the Jumbo-Tron. The aid stations were manned perfectly, and overall it was great experience. The organizers did great and the University of Toledo was a great place to start and end the race! Look forward to running it again next year.

Not Impressed

This was a very small marathon that seemed a bit unorganized. The start line changed at the last minute. There was just a line across the road. The course was pretty, but the expo was a joke, and the finish line was just as bad. Medals are nothing special; this was my first marathon, and therefore I was to get a "first-timer's" medal... which a woman pulled out of her pocket and handed to me with no ribbon. The medal is small, with a cheap ribbon, and the "glass mug"... what a joke. I received a half marathon mug in the mail about 8-10 weeks later; It's funny... I completed the marathon. People at most aid stations were awesome. Thank you to those volunteers! The people in charge didn't seem to care about the runners, as we all walked around wondering where the start was and hoping we would find it before the gun went off. The finish had cookies and pizza cut into little pieces. You had to walk about 35 yards to get to the nourishment. Results were up quickly and the message tent was great. All in all, I would NOT do this race again. For as long as it has been around, it seems to not have evolved. Even people who live in Toledo had no idea there was a marathon going. Too bad.

Great Hometown Race

I ran the half marathon in 2009 and it was one of the best races I have participated in. It sure helped to have a beautiful (but warm) day. The course was beautiful, which I was most definitely not expecting, having seen some other parts of Toledo. The aid stations were well stocked, the volunteers friendly, and traffic was unnoticeable (to tell you the truth, I don't remember if the streets were closed or not). The post-race food was good; you could tell they were preparing for cold weather, with hot chocolate, coffee and soup that was untouched. It was fun to finish next to the water, hang out and hear the band, and watch the marathoners come in. What really impressed me though was the post-race attention to detail. The finisher's mugs had not yet come in, so they weren't at the finish. They promised to mail them to all out-of-towners. I would get email updates about my mug, and soon I got it in the mail. I had also won a prize, and after getting the mug, I got another email telling me I would also get a jacket (which I didn't know about or expect). A few weeks later I received a jacket in the mail as well. I felt like it was Christmas every week from the Glass City Marathon. I can't imagine what work and expense it was to mail out all those mugs. I've run marathons where they run out of medals AND shirts, and oh well... too bad, you should have run faster. I was VERY impressed with the post-race follow up. I will run this one again, soon!

nice. small, convenient

The race is nice, small, and convenient for parking and the start. It has a few glitches to be worked out - they were putting up the finishing banner half an hour before the start. There was no start banner - just a line drawn on the road. The main complaint is that they had advertised glass finisher mugs for all runners; but they didn't have them, and promised to mail them. It has been 6 weeks, and they haven't arrived yet. That, to me, tells me they don't care, and may be a determining factor in doing the race again.

Nice, small race.

The Glass City Marathon is a great event in a great city. I stayed at the host hotel and literally walked out the front door and was at the starting line. The course was quite flat, but there was very little shade along the course(with the weather in the mid 80s, shade would have been a big help). The town of Toledo seems to be behind this marathon in every way possible. There was great police support and very good crowd support for such a small race. I'll be back in the future and hopefully record setting temperatures will not be back.

Felt like a VIP

Race management, volunteers and police all seemed personally committed to the runners at the GCM. I saw the weather forecast and switched to the early start. I appreciated that even the first water stop was good to go that early. Most of the course was open to traffic, but all of the drivers I saw were highly respectful of the runners. Flat, inexpensive and runner-friendly is the Glass City Marathon.

Hot but Beautiful

I thought that this was a great marathon and would definitely recommend it to anyone who asks. The expo was small, but sufficient and easy. The course was well marked and staffed, and the scenery was amazingly beautiful. I finished the race in a little over 5 hours, so there wasn't much food left at the finish line, but there was plenty of water and gel at all of stations along the way. Even though this was not a big race, there were quite a few number of police officers and general support providers along the way. My main comment would be that there was some confusion about the location of the race start and some of the information on the website did not seem to be entirely accurate. Was I supposed to get a glass mug at the finish?

Glass City - No Frills/No Hassle

The Glass City is a good, no-frills/no-hassle marathon. The course was flat as advertised, but one fluid station ran out of cups, and given the freakish heat wave on race day, every fluid station counted. Many thanks to the volunteers and to the folks in Toledo who came out of their homes to hand out water and ice cubes along the way. This is a no-hassle marathon that is inexpensive and logistically simple.

Cold and windy-brrr!

This is my second time for Glass City-it's a nice, flat course but the weather was tough this year. April in Ohio is iffy; that's how it goes. I had my sights on a PR,but missed it- the winds were so bad at the end, when a marathoner is weakest. The course was rather crowded: cars and traffic, narrow streets at times, lots of twists and turns in some parts of the race etc. Going through the park is pretty bad, with too many people, cars, the fishing thing going on every year,I think. It makes it hard to manoeuvre, especially when you are beginning to hit the middle of the race: a wall for many runners. The potholes were awful this year in the city, making it fairly dangerous to run. Positives- It's cheap, there are not too many people, and no hassles. However, I don't understand why it's not a chip race. And after such a cold/snowy/sleety, wet, windy race, the coffee and hot drinks, soup etc were pretty much gone by the time I got to them. I didn't even get a bagel! The awards were in one part of the hotel and the food in another, so I missed out! Oh well, not a big deal. Kudos to the brave volunteers;such awful weather to stand in for a bunch of crazy people running. Thank you to all.

Great, flat, small, spring marathon

I had a great time running the Glass City Marathon. The marathon was well organized and mid April was a great time to be running (we got great race day conditions). There aren't many spectators, but the course is generally quite pretty. I really enjoyed running it: it's a small race (~400 when I ran it), so there's lots of space, and people were friendly before and afterwards. It's also a nice, flat course for those looking for a fast time. I chose it after reading some great reviews about it online, and so I wanted to add my 2 cents!

Ran it 29 years ago - nice to come back again!

A nice gem of a marathon without all the hype of adding additional distances to attract huge numbers of runners. Organizers and volunteers were cheerful and offered plentiful refreshments/Gatorade along the way. I appreciated the early start and inclusion in the age group competition, but the water stops weren't ready for early starters, so there was nothing to drink until 8 miles in. One gets a lot of goodies for the low GCM entry cost. Keep up the good work over so many years.

Who stole the port-a-potties?

This was my seventh running of Glass City. Weather is always crappy one way or another, so I was braced for it; that does not mean that I liked it - especially the wind. Support was great throughout the course, weather permitting. Double the chill for the volunteers who so bravely stand out in it until the end. For a slow runner like me, I understand that many "jumped ship" due to the exterior adversity. Different-flavored Gatorade was a good idea. Volunteers are to be commended for being so encouraging and energetic. I never make on time for the chicken soup when it is warm (I presume at one stage it was) so I don't look for it anymore. The course was flat, which helps. I think the city should be more helpful considering that this race has been run over 30 times. I would kep this this race the same time of the year; each marathon is to carry a challenge with it anyway. The start is always a little hectic. The situation with the port-a-potties was dismal this time; I only saw one (that I used). Else, bushes came to an aid, thank God.

Should be moved to the fall, but not a bad maratho

This was my first running of Glass City. I was worried about the weather, especially the wind. Well, the wind and the weather delivered a knockout blow that day. Wanted to finish at about in 3:28, but finished in 3:44. Some of it was the weather, but I also had very bad leg cramps. Support was great at the aid stations throughout the course. Different-flavored Gatorade was a good idea. Volunteers are to be commended for being so encouraging and energetic, even though the weather was bad. Chicken soup was a great idea and was very tasty. The course was flat and easy; I think the race should be more closed to traffic, and the city should be more helpful considering that this race has been run over 30 times. Medals were ok, but should be bigger for a marathon. Also, they should put them around your neck when you finish; that gives you that feeling of a task completed, a job well done, like you earned it. I would definitely like to see this race run in the fall. The start was a little hectic. They sang the national anthem, and I thought we still had 5 minutes until race time, so I was waiting in line to use restroom and the gun went off. I started running and didn't see any restrooms along course. Get rid of the relay event - too congested on the course. Overall, a decent race that just needs a few adjustments to make it better.

What is possible is inevitable. Like weather.

What heroic people for our sport are the volunteers. If you run outdoor races, sooner or later you will have a day of miserable weather, and that was what happened in Toledo this year. As a reasonably competent marathoner, I was chilled to the bone by the end. If you double that effect for the five or more hours that the suffering marathoners were out in it, and then re-double the chill for the volunteers who so bravely stand out in it until the end, then it is the volunteers who deserve the medals. What can we do to improve their awareness of our appreciation?

Do Toledo!

I think this race is very businesslike and a must-do for a runner who performs best when running is the focus, not bands, costumes, purple tee-shirts or cheerleading. The race begins a 1/2 block from the host hotel (our room was lovely and however, the hotel was being remodeled), support is plentiful on the course, the course is pretty flat and the other runners are friendly. With the exception of the 2 miles shared with walleye fishermen (which has a certain charm to itself), the course is open and fast. The bottom line is that this race is hassle-free and convenient. Notwithstanding the atrocious weather conditions the last 6 miles (man, they really sucked), I applaud the Glass City Marathon and highly recommend this race. I am glad I did it even though the elements took their toll on my performance. I love spring races and if you are not doing Boston, do Toledo!

My home-town marathon, so I'm biased

I came home from Texas to do this race and I loved it for the most part. I was surprised at lack of traffic control, but Toledo drivers are very polite. Despite hundreds of cars having to pass me, none came close enough to cause worry. Wow, the weather was crappy, and though I don't care that much, seems a bad time to have a marathon in Toledo. Finally, I was pretty bummed out to not see a port-o-potty until Mile 8. The guy at the coffee shop in Rossford I was forced to use for relief had an evil eye for me. Also, not very good to have no early Gatorade for the early starters. But otherwise I was totally thrilled with the medal, the jacket and the soup. Thanks!!

Nothing impressive, but a decent race nonetheless

This is my third marathon (Chicago, Bayshore) and I have done a half dozen or so half marathons before. This was definitely the least impressive. Pros: I am a solo runner (don't like running in groups), so it was nice because this felt just like a long run I would do. It was a nice, flat course, so I PR-ed, which is always nice. The spectators were great, but there weren't many. Multiple flavors of Gatorade at the aid stations (a little thing, but better than the same thing each time) Cons: Almost half of the participants were relay runners, so it was hard to get a feel of pace with some people flying by on a 5-6 mile run. Also the transitions for the relay were very congested - they should be more off to the side of the road rather than on the road. Along with that congestion was the traffic. Most cars were understanding, but it is frustrating to have to alter your course for traffic in a race. As for the pre-race/race weekend activities. We stayed at the "official" hotel, which ended up being under construction (not the race director's fault, they were supposed to be done). The expo left much to be desired; it was basically a room with a half dozen tables. Likewise, the pasta dinner (at the Spaghetti Warehouse), was sub par. We ended up going back to the hotel afterward and ordering a pizza. If I were to do this one again, I would definitely stay in a suburb (like Maumee - 15 minutes away) and drive in the morning of the race. I would also like to echo EC's from Illinois comments about the Grand Rapids Marathon. I expected this to be more like the GR Marathon (I did the half there last year) and this marathon fell well short of it. If you are looking for an awesome smallish (2,000 or so) fall marathon, check out the GR one on October 18.

Well-run, small marathon

Glass City is a great low-frills marathon. If you're looking for on-course entertainment and pace groups, this isn't the race for you. However, they get the important things right. The course is flat and fast. The aid stations are frequent and well-stocked (Gatorade, water, Gu, bananas, oranges, etc.). The logistics are easy (smooth start/finish, bag drop at start line, splits and mile markers). Finally, the volunteers are numerous and enthusiastic.

Excellent small marathon - despite weather!!

This was my 1st GCM, and despite the weather it was a great race. The course is nice, everything was well organized, the volunteers were enthusiastic (despite standing out in the cold and rain/snow mix), and the few spectators who came out were fantastic. The course goes through some very scenic areas and is flat. You get a nice pullover, mug, and medal. This was the first marathon I've run that had different flavors of Gatorade along the course and there were plenty of fluid stops. The best part was the hot chicken soup at the end along with plenty of other refreshments and a warm hotel to enjoy them in. Overall, a great marathon despite the tough weather! I highly recommend this race!!

Of the 60+ marathons, only Boston felt more import

After 60+ marathons, I say that none of the other bigger races has anything over Toledo. Since 1990, I have been very blessed to know Tom, Ed, and the other staff and awesome volunteers. I sometimes hope it doesn't get much bigger. It's the people who plan and implement the plan who make it so special for us runners. Thank you!

Fantastic Marathon

The GCM is a gem!!! This year the weather was a little rough but the actual event was awesome. Everything is done first class. Weather has been unpredictable this past year (great example: look at Chicago this past fall) so there isn't much you can do about that. There are plenty of water stops, lots of refreshments, and there's plenty of crowd support for a little marathon. The event even gives you a glass mug, wind shirt, and multi-colored medal. I had a blast and for sure will be there next year.

Poor weather, mediocre race

After running in Grand Rapids in the fall, I was looking forward to another smaller race in Toledo. This one did not measure up to Grand Rapids. First, the water tables were not set up for the early-starters until mile 6. When I asked about this, I was advised that the "tables were not delivered on time." Why have an early start if you are not prepared? This race requires you to battle car traffic. By the end of the race, this becomes tiresome. Some of the positives: the volunteers were awesome once the tables were set up, the kids' races on the day before the marathon were a blast, and the pullover and mug for the participants were nice touches. While you certainly get your money's worth, I think the negatives outweigh the positives.

Good for training, well organized.

This is a flat course along the Maumee River. You can usually count on the weather for this event being cold and windy (as it was this year and in many previous years). The scenery is not particularly wonderful but interesting - first seeing the shipping boats and docks of Toledo, then the luxurious neighborhoods of Perrysburg, and lastly uptown Toledo before finishing at the Seagate Center. It was wonderful to have a place to sit and gather at the end of a race that has seats, tables, and is indoors. Good food and snacks too. Spectators are very scarce for this event, and with the small field, often there can be no other runners in sight. This race mostly consists of relay participants. Runners share the road with motorists, which generally is not a problem; crossing traffic is controlled by the TPD. The worst place is on River Road by the turn-around. Eliminating the cars at this location would really be a plus. Awesome shirts/jackets! This event excels in this department - better than many other big events. My biggest complaint has to do with road surface. The roads in Toledo and Maumee are in very bad condition. Add in the rain, and I could never tell how deep the potholes were when I ran along. It's a twisted ankle just waiting to happen - one must stay alert and watch his footing the whole way. I went to Spaghetti Warehouse after the race. Food was good, price was right, and service was very slow. Thanks to the GCM for an overall positive experience.

The organization is great, the course is great, but move the race to the fall. Make the GCM a great alternative to Chicago and New York. This will give local runners time to train and will boost your attendance by four fold, at least! - Scott from Sylvania.

Cold, windy, sunny, hills, fishermen

We had a 22 deg. F wind chill at the start, and I donned my running tights. The bridge over the river was slippery on the metal expansion joints. We had snow the night before the race, but it had mostly melted away by morning. It was nice to watch, when it was snowing. The host hotel was wonderful, and so was the pasta feed. The race results for some individuals got mixed up at the end, and there was some follow-up required to correct the mistakes. Overall, a wonderful Ohio marathon.

Great, Flat, Well-Run, Small-Field Race

After reading all the glowing 2006 reviews, I thought I'd give this race a try. I had a great experience: the volunteers were great and the race was well organized. The course itself is basically flat except for a couple very small hills and winds out and back long the water. The center of the course was very pretty as it goes through a small park or nature preserve. It's a small race so you're never jostling for space. A small downside is that there aren't many spectators but there are a few. It was the smallest marathon I've run and everyone was very friendly after the race. I also had a fantastic massage afterwards: you had to pay but was very cheap and excellent value for money. Overall, a great race and a big PR for me.

Great First-Time Race

I enjoyed the race and will always remember Glass City as my first marathon. I had a great time. I was a bit disappointed in the lack of community support. The other half marathons have been "bigger" races and have had spectators all over the race course. Support is key in a long distance run. I was also a bit disappointed in the expo; I really wouldn't call it an expo.... It was race packet pick-up. It was a bit disconcerting that the roads were open to traffic and drivers were not very courteous... that is no fault of the race or the directors just uninformed people! After that, the course was quite pretty, and the race was well organized - I would do it again!

Excellent, well run marathon

This is an excellent, well run marathon. The only complaint I have is that the first mile split was definitely short. Although the course was open to traffic, I didn't have any problems due to good traffic management. The course is fairly flat and can be fast depending on the wind.

Great small marathon

I really enjoyed running the Glass City Marathon in Toledo, Ohio, last Sunday, April 15. Not just because my taxes were done, but mostly because it was a well-organized race, clearly marked, with fantastic aid station personnel. The friendly, spray-painted white and blue directional arrows on the streets along with the helpful volunteers at intersections made navigating the course a breeze. For five-hour+ finishers they offered an hour early start, which I took advantage of. Spectators, although few, were extremely supportive. I would go back and run this race again just to get more of the delicious homemade chicken noodle soup that was part of the post-race refreshments.

Fast, Scenic, Convenient

Ditto all the positive comments from 2006. The course is fairly flat but scenic along the Maumee River. The start and finish were convenient to 3 downtown hotels. The time caller at the first mile was misplaced this year (at about 0.9 mi), but all other markers seemed dead on. I found aid stations at least every 2 miles and they were well stocked with water and Gatorade at every station, and also GU, oranges, and bananas at most of the later aid stations. One risk with this type of course is that if you get a strong north or south wind you will face a headwind for at least half of the course. This year a 10-20 mph wind from the north provided a boost heading south, but meant the last 12 miles were a fight against a nasty headwind. The spectators were enthusiastic but few in number. Overall a very good marathon experience.

Great, fast course. I recommend it!

Overall, this was a great marathon and a wonderful experience. I know it looks like my bad comments outweigh my good, but my bad comments are mostly small, picky things. This really was a great marathon. GOOD: - Fast, flat course. I made a PR and qualified for Boston! - VERY convenient setup. The race starts and finishes right outside the host hotel. The hotel catered to the runners and the staff were very friendly. - The small size of the race was great. I met a lot of awesome people. - Great volunteers around the course. A lot of water stops. - For the most part, the race was very organized. - If you're looking for a PR or a Boston qualifier, run this race. NOT SO GOOD (note, that I'm being very picky): - Award ceremony started 30 minutes late. My name wasn't called for my age group, so I thought I hadn't placed. But when I got home and looked at the website results, it showed that I placed second. I emailed them but never got a response. Never got an award. :( - But that's ok because the awards were pretty lame. They were bright red bags and there was no place distinction on them. First-place bag was the same as the third-place bag. - The wind shirts given to all marathoners were great quality, but the same bright, ugly red. Who wears this color??? - Info stated there would be GU at mile 14 but no one was handing it out. At about mile 20 I finally realized there was GU at the stations, but you had to go pick it up from the table yourself. I think the last station they were actually handing them out, but it was too late by then. - OK this hurt: at mile 24.5 there was a station and all the volunteers were shouting that we were at mile 25. I asked them, "Are you sure this right here is mile 25??" Was thinking, "Boy, that last mile just flew by!" They said, "Yes! Less than a mile to go!!" Ok, I knew that didn't make mathematical sense but it was mile 25 and my brain didn't work. So I was getting all excited that I was almost done... kept jogging and 1/2 a mile later... 4 laborious minutes later... I jogged across a big sign on the ground marking mile 25. I wanted to cry. - Because of the small size, a lot of times we were running on streets that were not closed off to traffic. Some jerk actually honked at me twice when I was passing some runners on the left because I was taking up too much street space. How rude. - Pasta dinner at spaghetti warehouse not so great. Unimpressive food, and understaffed. Why not have the pasta dinner at the host hotel? - The race is not chip-timed. - Because of the size, there were not many spectators like in the big races. However, the ones who were there were very cheerful. - It got VERY windy towards the end. At least it wasn't snowing.

Excellent, hassle-free small marathon

How much easier can it get? The start and finish right at the beautiful Wyndam host hotel. Nice, flat run across a couple of bridges and along the river with historic homes on the route. Seeing an incredible number of fishermen catching walleye in the Maumee River was quite the sight. Not a lot of spectators but those there were great. Late checkout of 2 p.m. was perfect. Highly recommended.

A great marathon... from start to finish!

The Glass City Marathon is a great small marathon (about 400 marathoners). The race isn't big enough for an "expo," but the packet pick-up (with some additional booths) went well. Although you don't wear a "chip" there is plenty of room at the start for those who are really time conscious. The course blended older and newer residential areas of Toledo and its surrounding communities with stretches along the Maumee River and the remains of an industrial era from years gone by. Registered runners received a nice wind-shirt and a commemorative glass mug and finishers earned an attractive medal. The refreshments at the finish were more than adequate and the spectators/aid-station volunteers were very enthusiastic and seemed genuinely happy to be there. We stayed in the "official race hotel" and I recommend that you do too, as the race starts in front of and finishes at the rear of the hotel. The pasta feed was OK (would have liked some meat sauce) and was only about a 7-8 block walk from the hotel. There are a couple of interesting bars on the route and I suggest you stop in to Frickers and take a good look at the Toledo Mud Hens new ballpark!

AWESOME EXPERIENCE!!!!

Add this marathon to your 'must do list'!! This race is great, before it even starts if you preregister by a certain date they give you a free Glass City 'In Training' Marathon T-Shirt. In addition, you get a pull-over long sleeve wind shirt, Glass City Mug, and a finishers medal. Everything is done first class. The organization is excellent and the race director did an awesome job!!! The course is mostly flat and a very scenic route that goes from downtown to a metro park and then back to downtown Toledo. During most of the route you are running along the Maumee River. There are plenty of water stops and tons of volunteers. Also throughout the race there are policemen controlling traffic. As you can tell I had a good experience and will definitely be running this again next year!!!!

One of spring's best marathons

In an array of spring races from Washington D.C. to Los Angeles, its easy to overlook Toledos little Glass City Marathon. But in a universe where many marathons fall far short of expectations, overlooking this gem would be a mistake. Toledo might be nothing fancy, but its everything you want in a race. The start line is just outside the host hotel, which hosts the expo up until just minutes before the race. The finish line is along the river, on the opposite side of the host hotel. There simply isnt an easier way to get to and back from a race. In between those two points is a fair and mostly flat course, with pockets of supportive Toledans in between well-placed water stops. Except for an out-and-back section from mile 12 through 16, where the runners must compete with fishermen in pick-ups angling for the start of the season, it is a mostly stress free course. Yes, many of the roads are open to traffic, but it is so light that youll hardly notice. Moreover, plenty of friendly officers and volunteers are present to keep you out of danger. Though the race has fewer than 300 full marathoners, youll hardly ever be alone due to the popular two-person and five-person relay teams. At the end, your name will be announced and youll be treated to a medal, fruit, an endless selection of bagels, and a helping of homemade soup. If you want to race with thousands of your other friends, choose another race. If you want an enjoyable race free of logistical and running stress, youll feel right at home here in Toledo.

nice, flat course

I ran this marathon two days ago, and it was my qualifying time for Boston, so I am very happy about this! The spectators were few, but spirited. The host hotel was poor... nice facility, but did little to accommodate runners. Had to buy something to eat for race morning because breakfast was not served until one hour prior to the run, and I need a little more time than that to prepare. Parking for the host hotel is in a deck, at a cost! The expo was really a joke.... I have seen better expos at 5K's. I would run this race again, but not stay at the host hotel. Scenery was not too bad for the run... mainly nice neighborhoods, with pretty good traffic control. Food after the race was poor... bagels, oranges, bananas... and not enough of it, for they ran out pretty quickly.

Fast, somewhat scenic course

Fast course. Few turns. Brief glimpses of big river. I've run this solo and as part of 2-man and 5-man relay teams. It features well organized exchange points, and plentiful fluid stations with enthusiastic volunteers. I'm surprised this race doesn't have a larger field considering the size of the metropolitan area and the flat, fast course. If you're not from northwest Ohio, think Kansas-flat. I will run this again!

Screaming fast course

Much to like about this race, starting with the course. Very flat, very straight, all asphalt (much of it fresh) and outstanding weather in 2006 make for a very fast race. Course management was fine - mile markers were dead on, much appreciated, and traffic control was fine. Split callers would benefit from a bit more education (one tried to call every last second) and, no, I did not run a 5:33 mile for mile 20 (split caller was way misplaced). Water stations were managed well, for the most part, but opportunities for improvement noted: standardize on Gatorade in the back, different colored cups for Gatorade, teach all volunteers to holler what they have and, please, double please, gloves for all servers - fingers in the liquid is definitely a no no! Very pleasant expo for a race of this size and nice organization with the Spaghetti Warehouse for Saturday dinner. Sparse post-race fixings but very nice attention paid to first-timers (a special mug and key chain) and announcements at the finish line were first-class. No chips, but quick and accurate scoring none-the-less. A shame the city of Toledo isn't big into the race; spectators were sparse. However, a very strong running day and overall pleasant experience - kudos to the Toledo Roadrunners.

course open to auto traffic in both directions

This is a flat course with the exception of the bridge over the Maumee River about 1 mile into the race. The first 1 1/2 miles are closed to automobile traffic but after that the course is open to cars traveling in both directions. The traffic is very heavy during the 2-mile out-and-back section near the halfway point. This road seems to be a popular fishing destination at one of the metro parks. If running alongside cars for 24 miles does not bother you, then this is an okay race.

Good 1st marathon but mile markers were problem

This was my first marathon and it was a great experience. The hotel was at the start and finish, the organization was great BUT the mile markers were missing and/or misplaced several spots at about 16 miles on. Made me a little nuts for my pacing. Pizza was tasty at end. Terrain fine although mid-part kind of boring and roads toward end were poor condition. BUT cops did great job controlling traffic. I wish results would have been broken down by age beyond the top finishers. Will be there next year!

An ok first marathon

The Glass City Marathon is first class up to the start. The expo is small but they provide shuttle service to and from the cheap all you can eat spaghetti dinner. The hotel is first class next to the river. There is ample parking. On race morning they have bagels, juice, coffee, etc. in one of the ground level rooms in the hotel. But that is where it ends. The course could be a little better. And the support could be there for the whole race. After I stopped running at mile 18 and turned to walk/running the rest of the way, I took alot in. First, I don't remember seeing the support van after mile 20. Second, the last few miles of the course is run on Summit St. Even though the course is supposed to close at 1pm there was no traffic control to be found, at least after 12:30. The guy in front of me I saw pushing the 'Walk' button on stoplights so he could cross the street. And then there is the concrete. The last few miles are run on Summit St. sidewalks because you obviously cannot run on the road. Well, a few problems. First, it is concrete and when your legs are already in pain, ending with concrete is not fun. Second, one guy actually stepped in my way on the sidewalk and said 'move'. Finally, the course, even though it is advertised as running next to the Maumee River does not. What I mean is you will not see the river for most of it. The only time you ran NEXT to the river was at the finish behind the hotel. Then there is the city. If you have never been to Toledo, it is very much like Gary, IN. On the outskirts it is nicer, but it is another rust belt city when you get to the inner part. And don't go to the McDonalds or try to find a place for a cup of coffee. It was 7am race day, McDonalds was closed, the BP Amoco was closed near Summit....I just could not understand it. The volunteers were awesome though. I think if nothing else those aid stations kept me wanting to finish. Those people were great and they deserve alot of praise. Although there were not alot of spectators, the aid stations did there best to keep you going. I got to mile marker 25 aid station right at 1pm. and I was surprised first, because they were still there and two, because I thought the guy was joking when they offered me a beer! He was not. The main criticism is definitely the course. For example, the WALLEYE MILES are run on this narrow street going down to where the fisherman park there trucks next to the river to fish. BUT it is also the turnaround street for the marathon so what you have is runners on one side, runners on the opposite side and pickup trucks going both ways trying to get by inbetween. Breathing the air in that area was not fun and I was very cautious with so many pickups. They definitely need to change the course, especially finding a different route to the end. All in all, I am glad I chose this for my first marathon, but I can tell you this for sure: When you get to mile 18 and your legs are throbbing, you need that support to keep you going and there was no one. I felt like at the end, especially being one of the solitary end runners, that I was all alone. I finished in a little less than 5 and a half hours but I wish there could have been more people to motivate me to keep going when I needed it most.

Very Nice Small Marathon Would Do Again

Well, I went to this marathon with a little hesitation, as I knew I would probably have to start with the early starters. But it worked out very well. The RD and volunteers and police were ALL extremely nice and helpful! One police officer even THANKED me for coming! The course was nice, with a couple of really nice views of the lake in the morning. There weren't many spectators, but that I expected. The biggest negative for me was that several of the roads were chewed up and need work and, therefore, cause a bit of uneven footing. Another minor thing is that the mile-marker for mile 17 was gone. Must have blown away. I also couldn't find the mile-marker for 19 either. They did have the mile-markers painted on the roads and signs marking them, too, but it was kind of a windy day, so I can see how they might have blown away. The painted road markers definitely wouldn't have been enough. The only other thing that could be improved is the food after the race. They only had cookies and bananas by the time I finished. I heard there was pizza, but you had to run UNDER 4:00 to get it. That is ridiculous. Overall though, I want to go back and improve my time, as I hurt my ankle around mile 16 and it really affected my time (by about a 1/2 hour). It was a beautiful day and overall a nice course. Not too hilly. There is a big hill early (the High St. Bridge) and maybe 4-5 more hills on the course, but they are placed such that they aren't terrible on the legs... OK, except for the one coming out of the 'Walleye' mile. That was a bit of a toughy. This is definitely a great small race. The RD really wants you to have a good time and everyone seems to be excited for you to be there, slow or not. I do recommend this race.

The Small, Flat, Lonely Marathon

This is not a marathon for a first-timer because there are not many spectators. The spectators that are there are 'GREAT'! (Some of the spectators drive up and down the course in their mini vans cheering!) A great deal of the race is run with traffic, but by mile 20 and thereafter, it just won't matter. It is very lonely if you don't have a friend or someone running at the same pace. The water stops are every two miles, and only a couple of port-a-potties. There was pizza, bagels, fruit, pop at the finish line.

Very well organized small marathon

My first Glass City marathon and I was very impressed with the organization and support during the race of the Toledo Road Runners and the volunteers. Ample course support, police support, traffic control, and aid stations. As others have said, you share the road with cars in some portions, but with the police support, traffic cones, etc. I never felt I was in danger. The course is basically flat, with a few hills. The bridge at mile 1 and a nice hill at mile 16 are the biggest. A few rolling hills in other areas, but nothing tough. The scenery on the course isn't exactly beautiful, but the first half is along the Maumee River, then through a main residential road coming back. Spectators were sparse, but enthusiastic. I would definitely recommend this as a quality marathon if you're looking for a smaller marathon with midwest friendliness.

Great volunteers- organized and eager to help

I first want to say how truly wonderful the volunteers were - they couldn't have done any more! There were some spectators considering the weather - I actually think the weather helped me! I really liked the fact that a 5+ hour runner like me could start one hour earlier - that way my husband who also did the marathon and finished 3+ didn't have to wait for me as long! We plan to do this next year! THANK YOU ALL!

Excellent and wet first marathon

This was my first marathon and what a run it was! The weather was nice and cool and the rain came down for a bit in a nice drizzle. However I don't think many of the runners noticed it because they were in 'the zone' - I know I was. Everyone who came out for this race was awesome, the volunteers were great, and the fan support was just awesome. Great race, something that I will return to in the future.

Superb!

A big “Well Done” for the organizers of this race. Despite being a small marathon, the organization was great, and lots of volunteers were out to help. There were plenty of aid stations (including some with fruit instead of just fluids), though a few more port-a-potties, especially earlier in the race, would be nice. There were several spots where people would call out pace times and predicted finish times - a good motivator later in the race. More visible mile markers would be a plus, though they are marked clearly on the pavement. Being Canadian, it was nice to see some kilometer markers as well, since I tend to gauge my distance in relation to 42 KM rather than 26 miles. The course is fairly flat, and although you run with traffic for much of it, the drivers were sparse and considerate. Not tons of spectator support, but like I said, it’s a small marathon. The finish area was well organized – they even call out your name as you approach the line! Lots of refreshments available afterwards, as well as a nice medal and glass mug. The weather was perfect, which helps any marathon. If you don’t need thousands of spectators cheering you on, this would be a good course for a PR. It was definitely worth the trip - I would do it again.

Chicken noodle soup and the Naumee River...mmm

This was my first marathon and it was great. I definitely liked the small size and friendly atmosphere. Aid stations were very plentiful and the volunteers enthusiastic. Even though the course was open to traffic, there were police at absolutely every intersection. The course is fast and nearly all flat with the only small hills coming at the beginning - and, believe me, it is worth running up the crest of the High Level Bridge to see the rising sun on the river!!! Refreshments at the end were great too - mmm...homemade chunky chicken noodle soup! The only downside is that the mile markers aren't very visible on the street, but with aid stations coming so often (especially near the end) it's not too difficult to figure out your location.

Great small marathon

Ran here as a replacement for the DC rip-off. My first small marathon and won't be my last, what a great race. Great organization, nice course, nice people. I read that some didn't like the traffic on the course but it was well managed and made it possible for friends to visit during the race, a first for me! A race by runners for runners not sponsors. Nice shirts also.

Small but AWESOME

The weather was perfect today. The course is a little hilly. There are 2 good size hills before 6 miles then a little rolling after that. If you live any where near Toledo, please come run this marathon. The only thing I would like to see changed are some mile markers (signs). I missed 3 of them on the street. Other than that I can't think of any reason not to run this race. I won't be back next year, I have other plans, I qualified for BOSTON!!! Thank you Toledo for making my dream come true. I improved my time from last year by 17 minutes. The volunters are awesome, they deserve a big applause.

Beautiful Weather and A Fun Run

I thought the size of the race would make it less enjoyable but that certainly wasn't the case. It's nice not to have to push through the crowds at the water stops! Course was well marked and quite interesting. Some beautiful homes, plenty of fishing tackle (if you ran you know what I mean), and a well-run marathon. Post race highlight--the chicken soup at the finish line was fabulous. I had to eat the homemade noodles with my fingers!

superbly managed race

We had never been to Toledo before. I was apprehensive about the course because our traveling about the town the day before did not reveal much going for the town (other than the first class art museum): it is a rust-belt city showing rust. The course however was surprisingly scenic after the second mile and up until the 23rd. The spectators were more plentiful than one would have expected, and they were quite enthusiastic. The race was extremely well-organized: it seemed that there were more volunteers than runners. I had been concerned that with the small field I would be trotting alone, but I was constantly with others. I recommend this race for any marathoner.

Good job Toledo runners!!

Great race, small event without all the hype. 1st Marathon in Ohio and if I wasn't chasing the '50 States Club' I would be back. Course is scenic along the river and takes you by some of the well-to-do areas of Toledo, and along some of the older areas. Running by the downtown ballpark is a plus. Suggestion try and schedule the race with a home game so that us out of towners may expericence that great park. The only small downside to this race was having to pay for your post race massage. A tremendous job, keep up the good work!

Fast course & well-run event for a small marathon

2003 was my first time running this race. As promised, the course was relatively flat and fast (good news for someone looking for PR or Boston qualifier). Some potholes and traffic to negotiate, but on the whole, the course was fine. Lots of scenic views in miles 5-12, with miles 1-4 and 16-26 being more urban. I was especially impressed with the provisions on the course. Given that this is a smaller marathon, I was concerned about how reliable water stops and etc would be. But water and Powerade were provided every 2 miles without fail, and sometimes more frequently than that. There were also race reps calling out average pace per mile and pace-to-finish times at about 4 or 5 spots on the course (very helpful!). For next year, more visible mile markers would be a help (they're painted on the road, and you don't see them until you're right on top of them). Other than that, an enjoyable and well-run event. Thanks to the Toledo Road Runners Club for a job well done.

Very Nice Event!

The traffic control was very good throughout the event and the course was well marked. Excellent support and the course was interesting and fun. I wish there had been a volunteer at the intersection near the finish line; I did not see the direction arrow and went off course for a bit, but got back on course with some help. The shirt is very tasteful, the medal is nice and the mug is quite grand. I would do this again...! Good job TRRC!!

Nicely organized smaller marathon

I returned to this marathon after running it 25 years ago. Although the weather really sucked, the organizers and volunteers did an excellent job. The volunteers deserve as many awards as the runners...having to endure the cold, wind, and rain for hours. It's typically a little warmer than 40 degrees in Toledo in late April. The course is pretty nice as it starts downtown, crosses the main Maumee bridge(only one of two real hills on the entire course), then winds through the outskirt towns of Toledo. The only knock on the course is that the streets have quite a few potholes...probably more noticeable since there were many puddles to step over. The organization of this under 1000-person marathon/marathon relay is top-notch. There were plenty(approx. every 2 miles) of aid stations serving water and power aid. Some 'goo' would be a nice addition, especially in the later miles. The mile markers seemed very accurate, but neon spray paint or signs might help them stand out more. Again, maybe the wet streets reduced the contrast. Every aid station was well-stocked with volunteers - EXCELLENT JOB! The guys giving splits AND PACES were a dream come true as I realized, while driving to the race that morning, that I forgot my watch....DOH! It's hard to really judge the spectators due to the weather. There seemed to be more people out there than I would have expected, but then again, I was pretty busy spitting, snorting, squinting, grunting, and all those other lovely things we do during marathons to really notice the spectators that much. I didn't stick around very long after the finish, but there was an assortment of bagels, fruit, chicken noodle soup, and beverages. The finishers received a glass mug and a large medal. Another nice touch...the announcer read off the runners' names and hometowns as you approached the finish line. All entrants received a high-quality, tan, long-sleeved shirt. Very Nice. Doesn't have all the ugly sponsor logos on the back. If you're a tight-ass like me and want to know the value of this race, I'd definitely say it was worth the money($35). With decent weather, this race could definitely be a PR course. This is a well-run race without the hassle of large crowds.

Very nice course, flat and fast.

I ran the 2002 race and have only 1 suggestion. I noticed that there are no mile markers other than a line on the street. I would have liked to have seen a large sign posted in the air with each mile marker. My family and friends had a heck of time finding me at certain times and it would have been much easier had they been able to see the mile markers. Otherwise, if you live anywhere near Toledo, I recommend this race. I think it was very well organgized. I liked how they announced most of the runner's names, as they approached the finish line too. I couldn't imagine a worse day to run with the wind and rain but that is April in Toledo.

A really good small marathon

If you don't like taking two or five or nine minutes to cross the start line; if you don't like having to swerve through other runners to get your drink; if you don't like people stopping in front of you; if you don't like having to chop your stride the whole race to avoid running into people - this race is for you. The Glass City course is urban and suburban with a few small hills. Toledo is a handsome and friendly little city, and the different suburban areas that you pass through, plus crossing and later re-crossing the Maumee River lend variety and interest to the course. I liked going out on one side of the river and then coming back on the other side. I also liked that the course didn't repeat itself all the time. Yes, the course is open to traffic but it was never an issue for me. The police protection at intersections is excellent. The aid stations are adequate and are competently staffed. The overall organization compares favorably with races that draw thousands more runners. The cost of staying in Toledo is very cheap relative to other urban marathons, and even the headquarters hotel is a good value. The finisher mementos are really nice - medals are fine but the mug is really nice. The pasta buffet at the host hotel (a Radisson) was reasonably priced and of very high quality. I can't really think of very many negatives. This is probably not the race you want if it is important to you to have thousands of cheering spectators. The expo is very tiny. Glass City is just a nice, straightforward little race with a minimum of hoopla, but also one where all of the important things are taken care of. I came to this race for the first time in 2001 mostly because the Lake County Marathon, north of Chicago, was cancelled. I am really glad I made this choice for my spring marathon.

open to traffic

The race course is open to traffic for the last 24 miles. If running a race without seeing a car is what you are looking for in a marathon then avoid this one. If cars do not bother you then this is an okay race. Except for going over the bridge in the first mile, the course is very flat.

Deserves to be larger than it is.

I intended to run this as a training run but things were going so well, I just went all out and set a new PR. The course is nice - rolling but gentle, but the scenery is a little sparse. But if you need good scenery, you're not concentrating enough on your running, I say! Organization was great and everything went smoothly. The start at the convention center is always a good thing. Spectators were sparse but the ones that were there were gung-ho! Volunteers, as all volunteers are, were heaven sent. This is overall a great little event. It's not a 'desitnation' marathon, but if you live anywhere within driving distance, or like smaller marathons, seriously consider this one! The finisher's mug was really a nice touch. And with the small size, us slower runners might even be able to place in an age group! I will do this again this year. I LOVE the intimacy of small marathons and think they all deserve more support!
