Excellent flat race with great afterparty!

This was my 10th marathon (9th state), and wow I was not expecting the race weekend to be THAT much fun! The expo was large-ish and had everything you need. So many hotel options near the start and finish, not to mention restaurants and things to do. The race was excellent - flat, good crowd support, numerous stations and porta potties. But really the afterparty steals the show! Being able to rest on the beach while you drink 4 (!!!) beers - yes please! Definitely take Monday off so you can enjoy!

Best post race party ever!

Nice flat course. Wind can be a challenge. Hands down has the best post race party! I wish I had taken Monday off,

Great spring marathon

The organization was fantastic. Every two minutes a wave of about 100-200 runners started sorted by running pace. Aid stations every mile and a half. The course hid us from the wind for the first 6 miles and then we got a tailwind for about 13 miles. We had a strong headwind on the way back to the finish. This course is laid out for PRs, even with the wind. If you run it in a year without wind, lookout you will have a blazing fast time. Crowd support was generally good, but there were empty spots on the course. The best support came from what looked like new national guard recruits on their base. They were so enthusiastic. The after party was the best I have been to. The band was fun and everyone got 4 free beers, so the place was full of energy. Only downside was the headwind for the last 6 miles.

Nice coastal marathon

I was signed up in 2020 and they cancelled this the week before due to COVID, so I was very anxious to get this one in. There was a really big 8K that day before, and most of the expo seems dedicated to this, so the merch was nothing special. Race day weather was perfect, low 60s with a light wind. There were 1800 marathon runners with about 4000+ halfs. The corrals/start times are the same for both groups, with a very large contingent of first time runners. I was a little banged up so I started back with the 4:50 pace group, and I was dodging groups of walkers for 4 miles (I ended up running a 4:28 so I was back too far), and it was clear based on the lines at the portopotties during the race as well as the number of people I saw pull up with injuries that there were a lot of inexperienced runners, but we have all been thru this and I think its great to see 1st timers try both of these distances. The course was completely flat except for one bridge and for the most part interesting. Very well supported and staffed with respect to water and gatorade stops, and a nice crowd for the last mile. Restaurants and the hotel locations were ideal. Would definitely recommend this for a first timer

Well-run event

J&A Racing does a great job putting on the weekend's events/races. Logistically, this marathon is a breeze, especially if you stay within several blocks of the start. There are plenty of hotels to choose from on Atlantic Ave. You can be in and out of the expo (at the Convention Center, which is close to the beachfront hotels) in 10 minutes if you don't want to linger and browse after picking up your bib, but there are enough vendors to get last-minute supplies/gear if you forgot something. As for the course, it's basically flat (except for the bridge around mile 16 and then again around mile 23), but I wouldn't describe it as easy because I've done it 3 times and every year the wind has been a major factor. I've run better times on much hillier courses (including sub-3). My best run here (low 3) came a few years ago when I settled in with a group of 15-20 and we took turns shielding each other on a very windy day. This year I didn't locate the pace group I wanted at the start line (my fault), so I ended up running solo for much of the day. The course turned back into the wind at the 18.4 mile checkpoint (out of the N/NE at what felt like 8-15 mph), which made for a long slog on the homeward stretch. Running along the beachfront on the boardwalk is visually pleasant and relaxing, but the surface is concrete, which beats up the legs (for about 4-5 total miles of the back half) and you're obviously completely exposed to the wind. (I also regretted not choosing shoes with a 'traditional' stack height for this course.) So, in short, if it's windy I highly recommend finding a pace group and sharing pulls, even if the pace group is 5 minutes slower than you want, unless you're at or near your top fitness and prepared to push the final miles in a solo effort. The water and gel stops were sufficient and most of the volunteers were extremely encouraging and helpful. All in all, great event. J&A knows what they're doing. You can run a good time here, just remember to tuck in on a windy day.

Perfectly organized race on a fast, pretty course

I am not usually a fan of larger races, but this marathon won my heart. The organization and volunteers made participation simple and easy. Days b4 the race J A Racing told us what to expect and made it happen. Great swag and a good sized expo. The course is close to perfectly flat with lovely scenery. Stretches through the woods with lots of shade; plenty of beach views; the boardwalk; and a fun stretch through the resort shops and restaurants. Since it's not an urban race, there aren't tons of people cheering you on. So, if you need to hear a lot of people telling you that you're doing great and looking good, this may not be the race for you. That being said, the support from our soldiers moved me and there were a lot of people lining the roads in the last few miles.

Very well organized fun race! After party the best

Came from out of town to run this and was highly impressed. Weather was great, course, volunteers, organization is top notch. VA Beach folks are very welcoming for this event. Highly recommend running this race. Had to downgrade myself from full to half last minute but really wish I was in the full. After party was best I've ever been. Great time!!

Great expo and after-partay

The weather was miserable. A massive headwind when running north (about 13 miles starting at mile 6) with the rain stinging your face. I wear glasses and wear a hat in the rain, but I couldn't keep the hat on my head and lost it at about mile 8. On a clear day, the course would have been great. This is the most flat marathon I've ever run, and I'd imagine most years would be a wind from the side The half marathoners started on the back half before we started on the full, so we didn't have that depressing moment when the half people all peel off. Expo had Olympian Shalane Flanagan, I like the shirt and finishers medal, and great music at the after party.

Loved the course, but not the weather

First of all let me start by saying that this race had added meaning to me. I was supposed to run it 7 years ago (it was to be my first marathon) and had signed up and was training when a malignant tumor was found on my spine. I emailed the marathon coordinators about my situation and that I just did not want my name in the 'Did Not Finish' list. They went above that and refunded my money. I had surgery to remove part of my spine so was out of running for awhile. I always said I would come back one day and run this marathon. It has taken 7 years as we live 10 hours away, but I finally ran and finished this marathon (my 4th marathon). The weather was miserable, but that cannot be controlled. I loved the course and despite the cold, wind, sleet, and rain was only a minute or so off my PR and still BQ'ed again. I thought spectators were decent considering conditions and felt everything ran smoothly. I wish I could've run it on a beautiful day to really enjoy it. I can't say much for after party because I was so cold and shivering that I had to find heat, coffee, and a change of clothes as fast as possible. It looked fun! Everyone in the VA Beach area was very friendly and helpful. My husband was able to take my kids to the Aquarium during the race and then see me finish. So happy to have come back for this one! Hope to do it again one day!

Good Marathon only course, well planned.

Very well organized with plenty of volunteers and super loyal fans along the route. Course seemed about .2 longer than my GPS but that's not unusual given the number of zig zags and turns (FYI, cut that nonsense out, there's plenty of real estate to squeeze in 26 miles without that many turns). Weather was a real challenge with 15-20 knot headwinds for the middle 10 mile portion of the course. It was cold too, upper 30's low 40's with sleet/rain. A real test of character. I would love to do this race again on a 60F overcast day with no wind but then again, who wouldn't. Huge thanks to the many volunteers and organizers who braved the cold and rain to cheer us crazy folks on.

Cold but fun

We ran the marathon on a blustery and wet morning. The expo was very organized and large. We ran the 8K the day before and it was a beautiful morning. I enjoyed the loop around Camp Pendleton and especially around Fort Story, but the out and back on Atlantic was a bit daunting. The finish line festival was so fun - FOUR BEERS per person, and it was good beer too. The Irish stew was delicious and perfect for the conditions, and the band was quite good. It was nice that the tent was so large considering that it wasn't warm enough to stand outside. The medals were neat, and the medal for completing both races was especially enviable. We stayed at the Holiday Inn which was within walking distance of the start and REALLY close to the start of the half. I don't have any complaints except for the weather, and you can't control that. Getting to Virginia Beach is a little costly, but that would be the only downside.

You can't control the weather...

This was a well organized event. I ran the marathon. The course was an out and back for the first half and then a looping out and back in the second half. The finish on the boardwalk was nice and the after party in the tent was a lot of fun. They gave you a banana, bag, towel, honey and oat bar, water, and running cap at the end. The only negative comment I have about the race is that they didn't distribute mylar heat blankets at the end. I saw a lot of people wearing the towels they distributed. This is the first marathon out of the thirteen that I've run that didn't have the heat sheets at the end. The temps, wind, and rain were tough enough during the race and not having the heat sheet made it extremely cold at the end. The second half of the marathon follows the half marathon course. There was also no rhyme or reason to the way gatorade and water were handed out at the stations. Sometimes, gatorade was first and water second. Other times, it alternated. The expo was very good, I enjoyed the added pot of gold and other Shamrock things around the pavilion. I also liked the Irish jokes along the course around mile sixteen/seventeen. The wind was really brutal from miles 10 through sixteen and again from mile 18 through 20. The race organizers can't control the weather. The weather most likely kept the spectators away. It seemed that only the families of people running the races were there to cheer people on. The run through Camp Pendleton was depressing, it would have been better if there were some spectators around. Other than that, this is a well organized race and I would recommend it.

Well organized, great course

This was a well organized marathon. Good course, flat, though a little windy, fantastic volunteers, great party afterwards. And the 5:00 hr pace group guy Chris did a wonderful job. I would recommend this marathon!

Wonderful, as always.

4th year attending, 3rd year running. My first race and the only one I continually run each year. Great shirts, finisher items (although the beach towel is a little cheap feeling and they gave a towel last year. the blankets and sweatshirts from the years before were awesome). The post race parties (we did the 8k the day before) have plenty of beer and is a great party atmosphere. Packet pick up was organized. I recommend this for first timers. This race will always be a better experience for the half marathon runners, but the nice flat course makes it a great marathon choice, too.

Fast course and great organization

The course is flat and fast. The temperature was perfect and for a small race, there were fans pretty much the whole way. The expo was really well run and easy to get to. There was plenty of parking on race day. The towel at the finish was a nice change from the mylar sheets. I look forward to 2016.

Great Event - Highly Recommend

Very well organized and is usually well represented by the regional running community. The course isn't spectacularly beautiful, but it's nice to run a bit along the beach boardwalk and through a few of the local military bases. The beer tent and after party also get great reviews although I didn't really participate in that. I've run 8 marathons, including 2 shamrocks, and I have to say it's a first class event. Perfect for me. Scenic, minimal spectators (I'm slower), big enough to feel the energy, great post-race (band, stew, beer), great volunteers and aid stations (thank you volunteers it got so cold and windy as the day went on!), very well organized, great website. I stayed at the Royal Clipper 4 blocks from start/finish; $85; no 2-night minimum; late checkout. Expo closes at 5 p.m. night before (very hard for people flying in) but will deliver your packet to beach hotel for $30.

Gold athe end of the rainbow is the Shamrock

Marathon number 30 for me. Very well run marathon and worth running. The weather: Non-issue with me, because we all have to deal with it, so there is sense in commenting on it. It's a: ' you get what you get, and plan on race morning' The Expo. : Very spacious and everything you could ask for. Accommodations: Very nice. We stayed at the Cutty Sark Motel. A little historic kind of place with stove, fridge, microwave, dishes, the works. All surrounded by high rise mega hotels, AND You still had a view of the ocean. Little did I know, that every race that weekend went right by the place. All my wife had to do is go out onto the balcony and watch. Also the place was about .4 miles from the start and finish which was nice. Great room rates too. Organization: Top notch !!! Never had to ask any questions, very easy everything ! Easy packet pick-up, course well secured, tons of port-o-lets, the best part ? The volunteers !!! awesome job guys ! EMS everywhere on bike, and stations located on the course. Course: Not too bad ? I'm really not an out and back fan, but the long run out around the base near the bay, is a lot better than just running around a cone. It was nice to see the leaders flash on by. It reminds me of how fast I am.. in my dreams ! As for elevation change ? Everyone joked about the hill& it's a waterway canal bridge crossing. This is one flat course !!!! OH did I mention the volunteers ? Everything super stocked, very friendly, and I was a 4:55 finisher, and they were all out there cheering us on ! Finish and post party: Only thing I can say is: OUTSTANDING ! Talk about huge party with an even bigger tent ? WOW !!! If you're looking for a flat fast course, while having a good time for the weekend ? This is a great marathon to do. I recommend it to anyone. One last note: We all know it can happen, and sadly this time it happened at the Shamrock. We lost a running family member. Rest in peace sweet angel. Our thoughts are with you always. Show us the good running trails up there, when we all meet again !

fabulous!!!

I thought the race had a lot of energy!!! The spectators were fabulous! The course was rather crowded at times and it was annoying when you were getting bumped but other than that-I loved it!!! I am already thinking about doing it again next year! Virginia Beach had an upbeat atmosphere and the weather just made it more pleasurable.

Flat and windy for 2014

Good marathon with a nice view of the ocean during parts of the race. Windy in 2014 but wind is to be expected in March and on the Atlantic coast. Flat course with good aid stations and great volunteers. Nice 'bottle opener' medal. Put this one on your to-do list.

Great race, great organization, great time!

I just ran this Shamrock Marathon yesterday and it was a great experience! The course is mainly flat with the exception of the out and back going on the bridge/ramp during the first half of the course. Great to see plenty of DJ's and spectators along the way in Virginia Beach, especially along Atlantic Ave., the boardwalk, and en route/inside Camp Pendleton. The Shore Drive portion of the race was quiet, but nice and wide open. Hardest part by far was the 3-mile stretch inside Joint Expeditionary Base East. The wind really started whipping there and not as much support (which would have been nice considering that's miles 19-22). All that said, it's a great flat course, a fun and run and definitely one where you can PR. Post-run party was great! The Irish Stew hit the spot for post-run fuel and always refreshing to get a post-run beer in your system! Plenty of hotels in the area close to the start and expo and all are reasonably priced too. I'd definitely consider coming back to Va. Beach again for Shamrock!

Great race - recommend

Overall: This is a well organized race, with a great expo, great bling, flat course and decent crowd support. Course: Flat, ocean front for about 5m. Crowd support was in spurts, but when they were there - they were loud! VA Beach is a windy place, but they did a good job of altering the direction of the course so there is not any extended periods with a head wind. Plenty of tail wind also! Race Org: Great expo. Plenty of water stops and more food/gu handouts than I am used to. Great bling ... race medal is very nice as is the long-sleeve tech shirt, plus I got a hat & bath towel. At the finish, Yuengling and plenty of food. Race start was 8:30am, which I felt was nice. Constructive feedback: Parking is an issue in VA Beach ... not enough of it and expensive. I arrived 1.5 hours before the start and had to park 1m away (and pay $20). Implementing a shuttle system would help.

Great Race

Can't say much more than what's already been said. Course was nice, spectators were a little lacking but those that were there were pretty enthusiastic. Plenty of AFFORDABLE hotels within WALKING distance of start/finish. Tremendous organization...great expo/swag. One of the best post race parties!

Awesome race

Great swag (4 free beers, Irish stew, party tent, real blanket), nice race course, great spectators (beer at various locations), scenic route (lighthouses, First Landing), large medal, and post-race party tent on the beach. This is a mostly flat course and very runner friendly. The weather is always an unknown, and although the wind was not friendly, it was only a factor for a portion of the race.

NICE!!!

This is only my 2nd Marathon, and therefore I really cannot give a sound opinion on technicalities. However, I must say that it was not difficult to keep a very regular pace, with an average of 5 seconds difference per mile, which I imagine reflects a very flat course. I really enjoyed my 3h46'15' journey.

Great race

Excellent organization and great swag. I had no idea that VA would be so cold with wind chill right above freezing. The wind off the beach made an otherwise flat course challenging. On a sunny day the course would be very enjoyable with ocean views. There are plenty of hotels within walking distance too and we walked two miles to the expo. As stated, the finishers blanket was very welcome and that, the shirt and hat are all good quality. The city of VA Beach basically shuts down in the morning on Saturday for the shorter races and most of Sunday for the longer ones do plan accordingly as you won't be able to move your car from most hotels on the beachfront. Shamrock on!

Exceeded my expectations!

We have run so many beach city marathons in the last few years, I expected this one to be same old stuff, but this one was different. Other than the cool, cloudy weather (good for fast times anyway!), I have nothing negative to say. First, the course was flat (pedestrian bridges in Florida are bigger!); the spectators were more plentiful than most of the marathons I've run; the swag was plentiful (shirt, blanket, medal, calendar, food, beer, bands...); and the post-race party was a blast. We stayed on our feet a couple more hours after the race to enjoy the band and beer. Even though my wife and I both have Virginia now, I will be back. This was a great way to spend St Paddy's Day!

Great, Top Notch Event

This was a great event and well worth travel to attend. Other race organizers should take notes (I'm talking to you NIke and Rock-n-Roll)! The event is well organized from the start to finish with plenty of well-stocked water stops, gels, and a nice flat course. It also has the best after-party I have ever attended 4 real cups of Yuengling beer, a great band, and terrific beef soup! I had a blast. You also get a finishers hat and this year we got super-useful and cool fleece blankets. Be aware that it can be chilly and the wind is harsh at times, but that is the nature of the location. Fabulous event, fabulous time, would do it again!

My 43rd Marathon!!!

I really wished more Canadian race directors came to this marathon. It was great! Here are my comments: 1. The party on the beach afterwards was amazing!! Great food (plenty for late finishers), free beer, great bands and the party atmosphere was a great way to finish the race. 2. The shirt. Long sleeves, good colour pattern. Well done. 3. Race kit pickup - I wish Cdn. architects designed convention centres like the ones in VA. A work of art. 4. The course - I liked running by the Ocean. The strong winds were a problem but I prefer it to the Atlantic City Marathon. Dislikes: More porta potties. Some mile markers had only 1! Also, more toilet paper in them as well. Overall well worth the 13 hour drive from Ottawa (one way!). Sanjay

Well Organized Event

I recommend this race for a spring marathon on the East Coast. Weather is an uncontrollable factor, and the weather was less than perfect in 2013. J&A Racing puts on a first class event, and you will not be disappointed by chosing this race. Positives: - Flat course - Well stocked drink/aid stations - Family friendly - Finish on boardwalk - Finish festival inside tent on beach (live band and beer available) - Overall value (long sleeve athletic shirt, nice running hat, finishing medal and finishing throw blanket) Negatives: - Carb boom energy gel (personally not a fan of the flavors I recommend carrying your own) - Road conditions on Atlantic Avenue (numerous spots where roads have: potholes and patches) - Little to no fanfare from 16 - 22 miles - Irish Stew at the finish festival(stomach desires something else) - Expo lacked the feel of a top notch event (seemed a little small and did not have a bunch of vendors or other race booths)

Fast Course - Great Race Organization

The Shamrock Marathon lived up to its reputation as a very well run race. All the information that you needed was available on the website, with additional tidbits, like the shirt design, band lineup or medal preview being posted on Facebook, not to mention receiving your bib number by text and email to facilitate packet pick up. Packet pickup was efficient as was the shirt pickup. They had a table set up to exchange shirt sizes, which I appreciated. The popular race-specific items that my wife and I wanted were sold out when we got there about 1:00 on Saturday, so if you can, get there early to shop if that's important to you. I did notice the long line to purchase race items that I've heard about from past races, but it could be that the line moved very quickly. I didn't have to wait in it so I don't know. The expo vendors themselves had the normal fare. If you needed something last minute, you would be able to procure it easily. The course itself was as advertised, flat and fast. The bridge at mile 3 and 10 was not a challenge that early in the course. There is a noticeable small incline from about mile 16 to mile 20. Again, it's not a hill; I don't want to mislead anyone, but there is a slight incline for at least a 3 to 4 mile stretch. It shows up on the race elevation chart on the race website. However, this is definitely the flattest of the three marathons I've run so far. Even much flatter than Houston. As to the course aesthetics, I'm not one that needs cheering throngs, bands or great scenery, but I understand that those things are important to many and don't begrudge them for it. If that is you, this would not likely have been a great year for you on the course. The weather was not conducive to crowds, and, not surprisingly, there were very few spectators. A portion of those that were on the course were enthusiastic, and that was appreciated, but the majority seemed like they were there to cheer on their particular friend or family member only. I will say that the spectators were more numerous and more enthusiastic in the last mile or so, which is certainly where you need them the most. The situation with the bands was strange, but it could have just been me. I don't know if their volume was required to be kept at a certain lower level, but most every time I didn't even know we were approaching a band until we were right next to them and their music kicked in, and as we passed on, it just as quickly faded out of hearing. This kind of defeated the 'pump you up' aspect of on-course music, but, again, I certainly appreciated that they were out there doing their part to help us on our way. I've heard many refer to the course itself as boring, especially the portion from mile 16 to about mile 23. I enjoyed this portion. From mile 16 to mile 19 you are running on a tree-lined road with the trees limbs extending over the road, creating a sort of tunnel feeling. I found this peaceful. Mile 19 to about 23 is through Fort Story. While not overly scenic, I find running through a military installation kind of cool, and there was at least one stretch where you could get a glimpse of the Atlantic ocean. Frankly, at this point, I wasn't taking in much visually anyway. As to course setup/management, all went well. The race started about 5 minutes late, but that doesn't bother me; I'd rather start a few minutes late knowing that things like timing, course closures, and the like are all worked out than just have the organizer send us on or way. My only complaint was that the mile 24 marker was missing when our pace group went past that point. When you are ticking off the last miles like I am, not mentally being able to check off passing that marker, even though you know you must have reached mile 24, was somewhat mentally challenging. I'm confident that the marker was not there as no one in the pack of about 12 runners that we were in saw a marker. Speaking of pacers, our pacers were great. The first mile was about 20 seconds slow, and they very slowly brought us back on pace. We hit the half marathon mark exactly on pace. They were communicative and encouraging. They brought the group in to the finish on pace and several of us moved ahead in the last mile or so to finish ahead of pace. I earned a BQ with 65 seconds to spare.(Hopefully that proves to be fast enough.) I would not have made it without the pacers. I made a point to thank the pacer that I could find in the finish chute. At the finish, the special item of a finisher's blanket was much appreciated. It was very effective in warding off the cold and bringing my body temperature back up. The finshers' tent was quite impressive. Lot's of energy and people enjoying the music and the food and beer. Overall, a great race. I set a 9 minute PR and got a BQ-worthy time.

Great race - great party

This is just great party race. Everything is done well. The course is a little boring at times but overall it is a good run. The big thing for me is the SWAG - other marathons take note! Finishers get: medal finisher cap finisher hoodie 4 free beers unlimited beef stew really good bands at the finish That is really good swag! But the best thing is the party atmosphere going on Also kudos to the race for not running out of stuff - i was taking the race slow as to not mess up Boston but when I crossed near 6 there was still plenty of people, food and beer! Highly recommended!

Great Event

Pros: - Flat course except for the one bridge that you cross twice, which is a nothing, maybe a 40 incline. - Half marathoners started earlier so they were off the course. - Several stretches with views of the ocean. - Run through the center of town for the halfway stretch, very festive. - I thought the stretch from 16-19 was a nice change of pace, going from a shore resort town to a serene 3 mile run through the woods. - DJ and small crowd support in the middle of nowhere at 19 was nice. - 20 22 was getting rough and lonely but back to the crowds just in time at 23 when I was hurting. - Finish on the boardwalk was fantastic. - Super crowds, very supportive people over most of the course and a few crazies with funny signs. People on the balconies of hotels cheering, locals offering beer around mile 24 (I passed). Soldiers in Camp Pendleton were awesome, high fives for everyone. I hope people realize how much their cheering and support means, its huge. - Well organized, started on time; orderly and non-packed corrals; - plenty of gatorade/water stops and 2 gel stations; no overcrowding anywhere on the course. - Nice and easily accessible expo. Got my race packet in 2 mns. - Nice long sleeve race tee, cap, hoodie and medal. 4 Beers and Irish Stew on the beach at the finish. - Hotels are off season and very reasonable. - Great town. Cons: - None Areas to Improve: - The checkout line at the expo for merchandise was ridiculously long, like an hour wait, which I wasnt doing. A couple of additional registers should fix that. - Itd be nice to start a little earlier, the sun was beginning to beat down on us around 11:00. - Yuengling Light would have been better after 26 miles but I just added water and made mine a light. This is a great spring marathon. The only thing that could have messed it up would have been strong ocean wind, which we didnt have. Highly recommended.

Solid Weekend of Events

I recommend this race for a spring marathon on the East Coast. Virginia Beach would serve as a nice destination race. Positives: - Flat course - Fair weather - Drink stations - Family friendly - Finish on boardwalk - Finish festival inside tent on beach - Overall value (long sleeve athletic shirt, running hat, finishing medal and finishing hooded sweatshirt) Negatives: - Carb boom energy gel (terrible flavors and taste) - Road conditions (numerous spots where roads are in less than desirable conditions: potholes, patches, construction) - Little to no fanfare from 16 - 22 miles - Need more food than Irish Stew at the finish festival tent (does not sit too well in stomach after running 3 hours) - Expo lacked the feel of a top notch event (seemed a little small and did not have a bunch of vendors or other race booths)

Green, green, green

I had alot of concerns approaching this event based upon previous reviews. For example others have previously described taking up to 2 hours for package pickup. The biggest issue was probably getting in and out of the parking lot but overall not a horrible experience. I drove 14 hours to get to Va Beach so I did not want to spend much time browsing but there appeared to be many vendors (the usual suspects). I would have stuck around if there were a guest speaker or two. With an event of this proportion perhaps it is time. Cost of marathon $$$ certainly on the high side but you get alot of swag including long sleeve dry fit shirt, finisher's cap, hooded sweat shirt (same for full and half marathoners), and a draw string bag. Yes and also the medal. Post race food - a bit dismal (green bananas, water, gatorade, cereal bar, sugar cookie, and a bowl of Irish stew). Race course was fairly flat in the first half (only hills were out and back across a bridge) but in second half along the boardwalk wind was stiff at times. There are more gradual rollers in second half. Timing: The half marathon starts an hour and half earlier that the full marathon (8:30 am). This leads to potentially warmer temperatures even for 3:30 finishers. Parking - if you are not from around Virginia Beach finding a parking spot might be a challenge on race morning. I stayed at the Hampton Inn (Norfolk) and there was a complimentaty shuttle to and from the race. This actually was the best part of the entire race experience. Whosoever was responsible for this kudos to them (I suspect it was the Hampton Inn/Holiday Inn folks). The best part of the weekend though was just getting out to the beach. If you are trying to complete 50 states or just looking for a destination marathon this one is worth doing.

Flat and fast marathon!

I did the half-marathon last year and loved the experience so much I decided to do the full. Lots of reasons why I loved this marathon: 1. Flat and fast marathon. I shaved off my time by 15 minutes and PRed! Course wasn't that scenic, but was a good course nonetheless. 2. The swag bag: you get a long sleeved tech-tee; hat; drawstring bag; medal and sweat shirt (the these are given after you finish). Bang for your buck! 3. Spectators were good for the most part. Some parts were sparse (like Fort Story and Shore Drive), but I can understand that it might be tough to get there. 4. Water stations were good and plentiful! 5. Finishing by the beach and seeing King Neptune: awesome! The only downside was the start time: 8:30pm for the marathoners (half went an hour before) and how hot it was towards the end (this isn't something anyone can control). I wasn't prepared for the heat in March. Would completely do this race again!

Fantastic race!

This year's Shamrock was fantastic! This was my 9th marathon and second Shamrock. The expo had a lot of vendors and it was super easy to pick up my number and shirt, no waiting at all. There was a very long line to buy extra Shamrock gear.. The race started exactly on time. There was good support with Gatorade, water and gels out on the course. I enjoyed running a relatively smaller marathon since my last two were LA and Boston. There were enough fans to encourage the runners and the support on the military bases was great. The weather was perfect with the only negative was a bit of a head wind during the boardwalk section. The wind was at our backs during the last 5 miles so I am not complaining. Last, the swag was incredible. They gave a long sleeve technical shirt, a bag, hooded sweatshirt and a hat!

GREAT Marathon!!

1st Shamrock marathon but one I will run again. Course is flat and fast (I ran a PR). Organization is top notch. Post race party fantastic (plenty of free beer!). Where did all the free stuff come from? You get more gear than any race I have run. 1) Long sleeve technical shirt 2) Finisher's hat 3) Finisher's sweatshirt 4) great medal. Fun party after the race. Check out Murphy's Irish Pub as well...great times.

Perfect day for a marathon

This was my first marathon and it was a great experience. The weather was great with just a little wind which is not bad for this area. i have run races here for 5 years and this one had the least wind. the expo was great especially if you knew what your bib number was. they didn't open till 1pm on friday and i got there at 12:30 and waited in line. only took 20 minutes to get my number and look over the entire expo. course was generally flat with the exception of the bridge at 1 1/2 mile area and the incline going from mile 15-18 on shore drive to the Fort Story gate. crowds were thin on this section of the course and it did get a little warm while running on Fort Story where there is a lack of trees. once i got back down to mile 23 to mile 25 was great while the last mile was just crazy with the fan support. i couldn't have asked for a better experience for my first marathon. i ran in 3:53 and lost 47 lbs since august to get to this point. i would strongly recommend this race.

A Well-Organized Race Weekend

This was my fifth marathon overall and my first Shamrock. I signed up because the registration fee was so low (and I had a promo code), and I had heard wonderful things about the race. Overall, I had a really great experience and would absolutely recommend Shamrock to others. A couple of nitpicky bits of constructive criticism/notes: -Add more port-o-potties to the start. It seemed like there were only a handful of port-o-potties in the start area (unless I completely missed others). I know a lot of the hotels seem to turn a blind eye to runners coming in to use the bathroom, but more port-o-potties would avoid some of the longer lines at the hotels. -The last 6-7 miles of the course are completely without shade, and at least this past year (2012), that was when the sun was absolutely overhead and blazing. -It seemed like the water stops were rather spaced out for the final miles of a marathon. Maybe consider adding another water stop or two from miles 19-26.2. -While nothing like the deathmarch to baggage at NYC, it did seem like the bag check trucks were a bit far from the finish (or at least it felt far at that point). -The Hilton charged $50 for a late check out, which felt a bit like extortion. -WEAR SUNSCREEN Pros: -This race is tremendously well-organized. -I stayed on the boardwalk and other than the late check out fee noted above, it was so easy to come and go to the start and finish. I would highly recommend paying the extra amount to stay on the boardwalk. -A hooded sweatshirt and running hat were given to all half and full finishers. I've never seen a race do that - wow! So all in all, you came away with a long sleeve tech shirt, a cinch sack, a hoodie and a running hat. Really impressive. -The medal is quite nice. -I made a mistake while registering (I entered something wrong in my address) and got a personal response within minutes from someone on the J&A staff that it was fixed. -The 4:30 pacers were great (George and Joe). They were consistent, encouraging and lovely to chat with. After having had some lousy pace group experiences, it was really nice to feel completely comfortable in their hands through mile 19 (I sped up a bit afterward). -This seemed to me to be the perfect happy medium between your mega-marathon (i.e., NYC, Chicago, etc.) and your teeny tiny event. -The half started 1.5 hours before the full. While I didn't love running with the sun overhead, I appreciated not having to dodge half runners at any point on the course or experiencing congestion in the first few miles before splitting off. I really enjoyed myself at Shamrock, and I'm thrilled with my shiny new PR. I would definitely do this race again if it were to fit into my calendar.

Great race- Lots of support and views

Ran the 2012 race. Course is very flat besides 2 bridge crossings that are really nothing. Start out a block from boardwalk and go south through a military complex. Awesome support at mile 8...high fiving troops, lots of energy and gave me goosebumps. Went through a Boy Scouts troops aid station that was cool. Came around and ran the boardwalk for a couple miles before heading back to where we started for the midway point. Great opportunity for family to take pics. Headed north around a wooded area...got kind of lonely between 17-21 miles. They had these cool signs with jokes on them that helped pass time. Some DJ's playing tunes along course. Came back around 22 mile mark and finished on the boardwalk by King Neptune statue. All aid stations were well staffed. Some parts of the course were tight, but they were few. Lots of crowd support around beach area. Pro's- Views of ocean, troops giving support, aid stations, crowd support Con's- tight in some areas, take your bib with you to get free beer (I didn't), had to walk for a while after finish to get hat, shirt, food and no chairs, need chairs at post-race concert. Great race and would highly recommend.

Great marathon

This was my 2nd marathon (1st was 6 years ago) and I really liked this race. It was a nice flat course, the only downside being some beat up roads and dealing with some cones. Plenty of water stations, and two gel stations. I really liked the finishing area and the after party (although I also ran the 8k the day before and there was no visible effort to keep people moving, and I almost crashed) Great food and free beer! The expo was fairly small, but the deals offered were pretty nice. All the spectators were great (albeit a bit sparse towards the end).

Flat course, great location

Good flat, first marathon with a seven hour limit. Only one 'hill' (a bridge that you travel over twice.) The boardwalk can be windy and it was a sunny and somewhat humid day. Enthusiastic crowds for most of the course except for a six mile part in a wooded area. Great fun to go through Camp Pendleton to be greeted and cheered on the by cadets. Plenty of water stops and porta potties. Four Yeungling beers at the finish plus a cookie, water, gatorade, pretzels, and Irish stew. Marathoners get a long sleeved technical shirt before the race and a nice hat and sweatshirt at the finish. The finish is on the beach where you can relax and enjoy the beer and music. Number packet pick-up was easy but the lines were really, really long if you wanted to purchase any Shamrock merc. It was nice touch to have my name on my bib and people cheering me on. I didn't mind that there were not mobs of people on the course. The spectators were very supportive even for us slow runners. It is an interesting course and do you see a bit of everything.

Very poorly managed.

I ran this marathon in 2011 with my husband. He's fast, I'm not. He ran 3:05, I ran 4.48. I have never 'reviewed' a marathon before, as he is much more experienced and usually adds his review. He added a review (initials PW) and was somewhat critical of a few issues. He was then barraged with emails from the race director, and generally called a liar and a trouble maker. So, here is my review: 1) The expo was horrible. We were there with our kids and it took TWO HOURS to get in, get our race numbers, and get out. Awful. 2) The half started first (??) and the full was delayed for 30-40 minutes because of 'construction' and we were forced to stand around in the freezing cold and the 20mph winds. It was a miserable way to start a race. 3)When I finished the marathon, there was NO FOOD AND NO DRINKS! unless you count tap water in paper cups. All the 'stew' they advertise was long gone, as well as sandwiches, Gatorade, etc. The race is geared towards the half, and for some unknown reason, they start the half first. There was a ton of walkers who walked the half, and then ate like they were at a free buffet. Seriously, NO FOOD OR DRINKS AT ALL when I finished! My husband finished in 3:05, and they had already run out of food, so you can't blame it all on my slow time. Overall, nice beautiful course, friendly people, but poor management decisions force me to agree, THUMBS DOWN!

Great Marathon, fast course

Great Marathon, I have run it twice. I rated the course a 4 because it can be windy depending on the weather. It is a fast course if there is no wind. I rated the spectators a 4 because there are two portions of the course where it gets a little isolated, although the spectators that they do have are great. Awesome beer tent at the finish with live music. It is very congested getting in and out of Va. Beach on the way in and way out.

A good place to PR

This was marathon #21 for me and my 3rd Shamrock Marathon. I added the 8K this year the day before and had a great time doing the "Whale" Challenge. Pros: -Quite a few hotels available on the boardwalk. If you just want a clean place, you can stay for a very reasonable amount. -The race organization of all the events is great. It's easy to navigate around. -The course is the 2nd flattest I've run (Berlin being the flattest). The only hill is a bridge you run over twice. There are some other elevation changes but none are really significant (and I hate hills!!). -The start of the marathon is for the marathoners only. This makes it very easy to get into your rhythm early. I don't remember having any issues with the crowds at any aid station either. -Yuengling and Irish stew at the finish. Still my favorite finisher's area of all the races I've done. The live band was good, too! Cons: -The wind is a little unpredictable. This year was a headwind for about 12 miles in a row. I'm a larger runner and it really bothered me. I ran my 2nd fastest marathon in 2009 here and it wasn't an issue. Certainly not the organizer's fault for weather, but beware. -I hope the delay in 2011 was a one-time thing but it was pretty disappointing not to know about it prior to race morning. I would have walked to the start 15 minutes later had we been told at the expo or had they sent an email blast. Because they didn't inform anyone until that morning, we were all left out in the cold and wind for additional time. It definitely wasn't fun. -From around 16-23 it was pretty lonely out there. The Burma-Shave type signs are funny but if there is a way to get some crowd support out there, it would be a really nice bonus! All in all, on the right weather day, this is a PR-type course. Run big!!

Great except for...

Overall, this was a very well organized race. The stretch from 10.5 to 19.5 is a very long, gradual hill, which seems to go forever. Lots of good things make it worthwhile. However, I have two gripes: 1. The organizers blew it by not announcing the delay in the start until race morning. The area under construction that caused the delay was torn up on Friday when I drove the course. Organizers should have made the announcement to delay the start during the expo so marathoners would not have had to stand out in wind/cold longer than necessary. 2. The Cavalier Hotel decided to charge me for a whole extra day since I could not make the 2:00 p.m. checkout. They did this despite saying that they wouldn't the night before. With the 15-minute delay, I was a whole 45 minutes late. Runners beware!

The Shamrock Marathon Rocked!

I really thought the expo was well organized. However, for a race this size and with this level of organization and planning I expected more vendors and a few speakers. I stayed at the Westin for only $115 each night, which was a nice discount for the runners. I also really enjoyed parking at the finish and only walking a block to my rental car. This was an easy race to run as the organization of the race directors made sure the only thing you had to do was focus on racing and not logistics. Now, onto the course. The marathon and half marathon have seperate starts which I loved. The course is flat and scenic and had visable clocks and mile markers. I loved running through the navy base and hearing all of those loud cheers around mile 8. You will be on the boardwalk for a mile or so around mile 11-12; prepare for wind. The second half is scenic yet more isolated and sheltered from the wind. The last couple of miles have you headed back to the start and the crowds start to pick up and you have the grand finale on the boardwalk lined with spectators. I Boston Qualified by 90 seconds along with a group of women my same age and the crowd was going crazy to cheer us into a BQ time. The finish area is a great place to party, relax or recover depending on your state of mind and body post run. It is the beach, enough said. I have completed over 23 marathons and this is one of my favorites. Besides, who can't use a little luck of the Irish for a 26.2 mile race?

Great race - I really enjoyed it!

This is my seventh marathon in six states and thus far this has been the best one I have run. Very easy and flat course. It was a little cold and windy at first; however, the spectators were great and water stations were plentiful. The pre-race activities are great for the kids and a good time party afterward. My only suggestions is to have oranges or bananas on the course and make it a Saturday race so runners can enjoy the beer more so and not have to work the following day. Overall, great race!!!!

A Good Marathon to Run

A well run marathon. Organization was top-notch. A shirt before the run and a shirt and hat after the run. Two shirts - never seen that before. The course was well marked with spectators in most areas except the far corners. The 15-minute delay at the start was required to keep us away from the halfers but the wind and the cold made the wait unbearable. Only bad thing is that I hate long, straight runs, and some of the course had straightaways that seemed to go on forever.

Awesome marathon

This was my 5th marathon, and first in Virginia Beach. The marathon was very well organized and very well orchestrated. The marathon starts in downtown Virginia Beach and heads south. Love running through the base with the soldiers giving us a high-five. We then came back to town, ran up the boardwalk, and then went North on Atlantic before going through a park on the north side and through another base. We finished by going back into town to end on the boardwalk. This was an awesome race. I ran a personal best here. Will definitely come back to run this again. Virginia Beach is a very friendly area. We had a lot of fun spending time in this area.

Wonderful Early Spring Marathon-Highly Recommended

I loved this race. The most impressive thing about this race was how well it was organized and how engaged both the volunteers and the spectators were. The Shamrock folks have decades of experience "running" this event, and it showed! Kudos to the marathon organizers. I am one of the people who got hosed by the Myrtle Beach cancellation last year, and I'm so happy to have found this race as my spring marathon this year. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for an early/spring race in the mid-Atlantic. Other noteworthy things to mention: It was inexpensive to fly down from NY, and the lodging was reasonable. Make your reservations early for dinner the night before (not that many sit-down pasta/Italian joints). Course not as easy as advertised-challenging, long stretches of modest inclines, and a lot of headwinds (on the day I ran). Overall, I loved this race. I would highly recommend it, and I'm very grateful to the organizers for pulling off a super race! - AD

Excellently-Run Race! Loved it!

This was my first marathon, but based on my previous racing experience, this is the best run race I've ever been a part of. It was also the best value. With some races beginning to force you to pay for your own medal, Shamrock gives you the medal, two long-sleeve shirts and a special finishing surprise. The course was really as flat as everyone says, and it was a very first-timer friendly route. There were long stretches that were at least partially shaded. There was awesome volunteer support with water every mile past the halfway point. There really isn't that much spectator support at all. Other than the last .2 miles, there might have been 150 spectators on the rest of the course.

Fantastic first-time experience

I was one of the people who went to Myrtle Beach only to have the race canceled. AND it was my first marathon too. I chose Virginia Beach and signed up the minute I got home from Myrtle Beach. Then I trained another 5 weeks. I have to say... I was so impressed with everything and everyone associated with the marathon. First-rate job! I would request that future races start at 7 a.m. or even earlier, since marathoners are out there longer than the runners doing the half and it can get hot ( and it did). I was delighted to do a 4:21 for my first marathon, missing qualifying for Boston by less than 6 minutes (although qualifying was not my goal). Thanks to the volunteers who all were enthusiastic, supportive and genuine. I normally don't have a smile on my face for 4-plus hours while running, but I sure did that day. The soldiers at Camp Pendleton were a real highlight and I just can't express enough how great my experience was. Thank you for an experience I will never forget. I plan on returning for sure!

Fantastic Time!

This was my fourth marathon, but my first time doing the Shamrock. This was my wife Joanne's first marathon. Based on our training, I was slightly concerned because the course time limit had dropped to 6.5 hours from 7 hours the previous year. I emailed the race director in October and recieved a prompt reply that we would be fine if we finished by 7 hours. We did not need the extra half hour, but it was nice to know we had it. The organization for the race was fantastic, and the volunteers could not have been nicer. At each water stop people were encouraging us. My high-fives to our Marines might have been the highlight of my run. I thanked each one of them for their sacrifice. I actually liked the solitude of Fort Story. There was also an unofficial "beer stop" at mile 23! When Joanne and I saw Neptune, we knew we were home. We received a great medal, a finisher's hat and a second shirt! Thank you all for a wonderful experience. For anyone considering running this race, I highly recommend a hotel near the start/finish. The rates were good and you could not beat the convenience. We left our room at 7:40 a.m. to start the race at 8. It doesn't get better than that! The only downer, and no fault of the race committee, was the temperature. I was hoping for 50's, but I got 70's. We went a little slower, but so what? Be sure we will return.

Nice race, but seems geared to the half

This is flat course, but marathoners get a pretty nasty headwind for the first few miles and the last few miles. It definitely impacted my pacing the first few miles, and then I did myself in by overcompensating and forgetting to wear sunblock, so by mid-race I was sunburned and delirious! Not the race's fault! Organization was great. Very efficient and manageable expo (get there Friday night, if you can). You pay a lot for entry, but you get a lot too, if you're into that. The half attracts a much bigger crowd and I also got the impression that the half was their premier event. The 7 a.m. start time for half marathoners didn't make sense to me because, in this weather, the marathoners should receive the benefit of the cooler weather for that first hour - they're out there twice as long! Marathoners trying to pull down a decent pace were catching up to half marathon walkers during the final miles.... It's totally feasible that this be reversed so the marathoners get the earlier start. Crowd support was really good for a race this size. DJ's on the course were awesome and looked like they were having a great time working the crowd and runners.... The course itself was average. You're not running along the water for that long, and although the finish is nice, there are lots of sun-baked miles between the start and finish. All in all, it was fun, and I'd probably do it again if I were a local.

Terrific event

This is a terrific event, very well run, with lots of nice perks. Would have preferred to have an earlier start time for the marathon based on the warm temperatures, but that is a minor whine coming from a northerner used to running in 30 degree temps. The post-race party was great.

A great race to do year-to-year

This was the 2nd year I did the Whale Challenge at Shamrock (8k on Saturday and Marathon on Sunday) and it was great. Like previous posts before, this is a race where you get a lot of bang for your buck. My ony grievance for this year was the poor corralling of the 8k race - I run a 39 minute 8k and was put all the way in the back of the pack, while walkers and children were in the front. What gives??? It took 2 minutes off my time just to dodge all those people. Other than that, a great and friendly atmosphere and the off-season provides a good chance to get a cheap hotel right by the start.

The Shamrock Rocked!

I was very impressed with this event. Expo - It was well-organized and appropriately decked out in green and shamrocks. There was a nice variety of vendors and friendly volunteers. Course - There were plenty of nice hotels on the beach within walking distance of the start and finish. It is pancake flat (except one tiny overpass that you cross on the way out and back) with diverse scenery - stretches are on the boardwalk, tree-lined roads and military bases. Miles 16-23 were a little rough due to the unseasonably hot weather, blazing sun and no shade. However, the finish on the boardwalk made up for it. Crowd support - Very good for the most part but absent in some stretches (which I like). Spectators really got into the Shamrock theme and dressed in creative costumes! Swag - The best I have seen. Great long-sleeved technical race shirt, a nice-looking finishers hat, a long-sleeved cotton finishers shirt, and a very nice medal. The finishers tent was also pretty cool. Although the weather was in the 70s in the latter part of the race and I didn't come close to PRing, I was very impressed with the Shamrock Marathon. I will be back next year!

Excellently organised race.

Pros: 1) Decent expo with lots of easy free parking, packet pickup was easy, nice long sleeved technical t-shirt. Goodie bag was physically nice though contents a bit spartan (there was an electronic green goodie bag too). 2) Course was generally very flat, though actually less along the seafront than I imagined it was, a little more wouldn't hurt I feel if it could be squeezed in. There were also a few places where you could run on the side of the road on grass or gravel, I think my feet appreciated that! 3) Excellent water stations, seemed to be an endless supply of them with very enthusiastic and encouraging volunteers. 4) Crowds were good and very encouraging. Especially around the half way mark and the finish although there were long stretches through the woods and military bases where it felt more like a long run with friends. 5) Fantastic support from the High 5 Corridor by the soldiers at Camp Pendleton, they made so much noise that when I first heard it I thought it was half marathon finish I could hear! 6) Excellent finish line organization, no shortage of food or drinks (and I finished in 5.35) and a bonus finishers cap and cotton finishers t-shirt to boot and really nice medal. 7) Very impressed with the Team in Training crew, whilst at the beginning they were very much supporting their own people by the time I was getting to the end their support was universal, especially during the quiet miles circa 16-21 or so. I actually watched them come in at just under 7 hours with one of their runners, certainly no one got left behind. Cons 1) Probably another gel stop wouldn't hurt, just had the two. 2) Weather was perfect, unseasonably warm in fact, I found it rather toasty, but perhaps better than wet and wild! Not the organizers fault of course& but do wonder if starting the marathon a little earlier wouldn't hurt. 3) Errr& Overall excellent and would recommend to anyone to run at least once.

8 am start time?? Really??

I'll start by saying that this is a fantastic marathon. For a first timer, for a veteran, for anybody. The course is kind to the runner...if it's not sunny, windy, 65-70 degrees outside and doesn't start at 8 am. The weather forecast for the race predicted warm weather, possibly in the 70's. Knowing that, it's beyond me that the race directors did not alter the start time for the marathon (8 am) even though the start time for the HALF marathon was 7 AM. I understand the traffic problems that could be created with coinciding start times. My suggestion would be to create two lanes. I realize runner traffic would then become an issue but would you rather have a traffic problem or a heat problem because of a late start time? Seems like a no brainer: start the race earlier and avoid an over-crowded med tent at the end and a bunch of 'DNF's' in the results' page the next morning. By mile 21, the heat hit me and my quest for a sub 3 hour marathon went out the window. It was a disappointing finish to a nice race with nice volunteers (except for the 2 who were SMOKING in the information booth at 7:30 am. That'll really pump you up before a race), a nice course and a great post race party. So the bottom line is: would I do this race again? Sure. If it started earlier.

Well organized race with some very minor pitfalls.

This is the 6th time I have run the full marathon here in Virginia Beach (and probably 40 overall), so I hope my comments carry a little more weight here. The race is owned by two runners and athletes, so they know what runners want. This is an extremely well organized race. Packet pick up is easy and quick. The expo is fine, lets be real, if you have been to one, you have been to them all! Race day parking is an issue for the FULL marathoners, as each year, the half (which starts an hour earlier at 7 am) gets bigger. 8,500 half marathoners plus their support people/spectators means that if you are looking for parking for the full, you are going to be parking about a mile or more away. Personally I don't mind as it helps to walk AFTER the race! The races start on time and you will get a flat, well marked course. Expect clocks every few miles, with them being more consistent towards the end. At the water stops/aid stations (Gel), expect them to be fully stocked and fully staffed. I have NEVER seen them run out of water or not have cups always ready! The weather, of course, is the wildcard. I have run it in 35 degrees and 30 mph headwinds. I have run it in 70 degrees with no wind. It's the weather in March in the Mid-Atlantic. You just never know...I always say, just show up and run! Do not expect a lot of spectators, as the race is run near the Oceanfront and passes thru a lot of non-residential areas. You won't see much on the Oceanfront for the start or on the military bases you run thru. Post race & 'schwag' is fantastic...You get a nice long sleeve Brooks tech shirt (design this year was hideous, I thought), a reusable cloth bag and at the finish you get a huge medal, a finishers hat and shirt (long sleeve cotton, which I love). The post race party is great...The stew is nice, and free beer (although I don't drink). If its warm outside, people just hang out on the beach after the race for hours.

Great Week-end

Again,The staff and organizers of this great event did a splendid job. This is why my friends and I drive 16 hours. I must say ,this is my 4th Shamrock and was definitely the toughest. The heat was a factor, very hot for this time of the year,I wish the Marathon would start before the half, reverse the starting times.Anyway, I got to see the sun rise Sat. and Sun. over the ocean which was spectacular and we all had a terrific week-end. I was wondering why there were no results posted on the back wall like last year? Thank You all for an overall Great Week-end. Hope to see you all next year. Cheers!!

It was well worth it

This is my second Shamrock. It is one of the best races I've done. There is much value for the registration fee: tech shirt, finisher's hat, finisher's t-shirt, fantastic medal, well stocked aid stations, good course, good expo, and fun post-race party. For those needing crowd support, please realize that this is not Chicago or New York. There are not constant crowds, but good crowd support from about mile 1 to 14 and from about mile 23 to the end. I have no complaints about this marathon. I think anyone will enjoy it - whether a first-timer or an experienced marathoner.

Great race for RUNNERS.

Marathon is a GREAT EVENT for RUNNERS! It is an extremely well run/well organized race that has a lot of fun character to go with it. It is the perfect size, course, and weather (usually) for a great finishing time. Most of the hoopla seems to be for the half marathon (VERY fun having run that before), but the marathon is great for a serious day of running. I love this event overall! Pros: Price, Location, Expo, Course, # of Participants, Weather, Course Logistics, Volunteers Cons: Quiet race for the most part in terms of spectators (Pro for some people),Forces one to train through the winter (Pro for some people)

RUNNING OF THE GREEN

This event is always first-class, and for this year, there was even warm weather. It was at least 40 degrees warmer then in '09. I ran the DOLPHIN CHALLENGE this year - the 8K on Saturday and the half on Sunday. The support was great, and the signs between miles 4 and 6 had a lot of us laughing. At the finish you get a medal, a hat, and this year, a finisher's shirt - as well as lots of food. I highly recommend this event.

Being of Irish Descent, I Love this Marathon

I've run 52 marathons. I ran the Shamrock 3 times now. Everything about this race is first class; this is the reason I drive 16 hours from Montreal, Canada. The 2009 edition was perfect - the weather could not have been better. The people and volunteers are extremely friendly, which helps a lot. From the start to the finish, I love it all! this year, 4 more friends will travel with me and run. Can't wait to get there!!

First marathon, wonderful race, friendly people!

This was my first marathon and I ran 3:00:21. I loved the course; it was flat and fast. It was not windy this year when I ran it, but I've heard others say it was in the past. The crowd support was great for the first 13.1 miles, but then it fell off while out by Fort Story and the Cape Henry Lighthouse. It was dead out there, but the crowds were great as I neared the waterfront and boardwalk area for the finish. The expo was organized, the people were very helpful and friendly, the shirts were awesome, the Irish stew at the finish line was very tasty, and the weather was perfect.

Awesome, well organized race. I loved the boardwalk finish, but it's deceptively long once from the point where you get on the boardwalk to the finish (King Neptune).

Nothing like running for beer!

This was my first marathon, and I have done others since. I did not expect the long stretches of running through military bases and roads that would be without people/spectators. Miles 18-23 were quite the mind game. :) All that being said, I would trade a few lonely miles for a killer beer garden at the finish line... on the beach... thanks to Yuengling! Really great expo. Plenty of lodging at or around start/finish line. We booked at the last minute and had the impression that everything was sold out. It wasn't. This race takes place pre-beach season by a few weeks. You should not have to stay more than .5 miles away from the start/finish, so call around.

LOVED Shamrock!!

My second marathon, and so far my favorite. What a beautiful day!! The course is so flat, with one "hill," if you can call it that. Volunteers are amazing and the expo was awesome. I got some nice gear there... and I loved the shirt and medal. After the marathon was a nice party on the beach... beer, food and lots of fun. I was most excited because I took 41 minutes off of my last marathon - my first was 4:52 and this time hit 4:11!!! Pace groups are awesome at this race and they really do their job - take advantage if trying to hit a certain time. You run through and army base and everyone is out screaming for you - I almost started crying because of the emotional experience. It was incredible... and you actually get to go on the base! I have plans to do marathons all over, but I would DEFINITELY consider this one again.

Great for the first-time marathoner

I came to VA Beach by myself from Minneapolis, MN. This was my first marathon and I knew beforehand that it would be flat. The weather was great for me (36 degrees to begin the race) since I had trained in sub-zero weather during the winter. The support was great and since there weren't a huge number of runners (around 3,000, with 2,555 finishers) it made for an intimate course. I ran it in 3:44:32. The four free beer tickets were great, and they gave me four more tickets free when I finished my beers.

Flat course and a definite place for a BQ

Marathon #13 and my 2nd consecutive Shamrock: I picked this race as what I thought was to be a training run for London, but turned out to be a monster PR for me (by 31 minutes). It's a flat course for sure, with only a bridge that you cross twice as the only major elevation change (at 3 and before 10). It was a perfect day to run with low temps and little to no wind. A few folks have mentioned how boring it was for them from 15-19, but I really liked the nice change from the boardwalk to the solitude of Shore Drive. The expo was great and very easy to navigate. I probably spent 15 minutes there and walked through all of the booths. Post-race food of Irish stew and Yuengling was great! Unfortunately I dropped 3 of my beer tickets! A recommendation is to find a hotel close to the start/finish line. I was about a mile from the start and half a mile from the finish, and it was absolutely perfect! All in all, this is a great smaller race (2,600 finishers in the marathon) and one I'd recommend to anyone who's looking for a PR or a BQ, or both!

A fun, enjoyable marathon experience

The one thing that I was worried about before entering this race was a nasty sea breeze, but it ended up being nearly perfect out. This could not be said for the 8K the day before when it was really blowing! The course is flat with a couple of very slight inclines, plus going on the bridge twice. There is a good mix of everything, including the boardwalk, two military camps, the Virginia Aquarium, and a nice stretch of woods. Water stops are plentiful and the spectators are great, cheering for you by name as they put it on your number. This is my second marathon and I was happy to take a huge chunk off my time, going from 3:57 last year to 3:21 here in Virginia Beach.

Awesome!

Great race! I PR'ed by 4 minutes. We lucked out with amazing weather - high 40's and not much wind. A little too sunny, but it was cool enough to not worry about it. My favorite stretch was actually miles 16-19 when we ran in the shade and there weren't any spectators. Felt very calm to me. The other parts of the race had great support! Fast course. I only ran into the half-marathoners the last 2 miles, but they were walking and not in my way at all (I ran a 3:17).

Great Marathon Experience

This is the fourth straight year I have done Shamrock and must say that this is a great marathon. The course is pancake flat and well marked, with fully stocked aid stops and awesome volunteers. The finish line area is well organized; the only thing I would want is a little more to eat in the bag than a cookie and a banana! Kudos on the reusable goody bags and lunch bags at the end. If you need spectators to keep you going, there are a few, but don't expect a lot, especially from miles 16 to 21. Whether you are a veteran marathoner or a first-timer, this race caters to all.

Great race

This was my 19th marathon and I loved the Shamrock. I had heard good and bad, so I was skeptical. After horrible, cold, windy weather the two days prior, we were worried; but you couldn't ask for better weather! It was in the low 30s at the start and low 50s at the finish. Minimal wind, except Fort Story. Shirts are nice, and the expo was small. I love the finisher's hat. MisseI m the stew and beer, but that was okay by me (this was my fault, as I just didn't find it). I cannot recommend enough to stay near the start. We were 1 block from the start and it was heaven to stay in our room until 15 minutes prior to the start. The walk division was well monitored. The course is flat and fast, and my husband PR'd.

A well organized race with no unpleasantness

The race was well run and the expo was nicely done. The folks around me were friendly and the course was flat, with nice views of the ocean, etc. My only complaint was the Springgate Marriot wanting me out by noon - four hours after the start of the race. So check the grace period before you decide which hotel to stay in for this race. I would strongly recommend this race!

Great Race for a PR or BQ

Great race. Very flat. The pace group leaders did a great job. I was near the 3:20 group much of the race and he finished right on time. If you're going for a BQ, the pace groups will get you there. Having your name on the race bib is a nice touch. The fan support is pretty good, especially in the first half. The fans are very enthusiastic and cheer for you by name. It's very motivating. The second half of the race can be boring, especially going through Fort Story (miles 18-22). Overall, it's a great race and I would certainly recommend it.

Fast course; great pre- & post-race "goodies"

This was my first time running Shamrock and it was a good experience. We parked at a metered spot about 12 blocks from the finish and had no problems whatsoever. The weather was perfect; it had a flat, open course with little congestion (I didn't run into any half-marathoners or walkers until the last 2 miles); and there were good mile markers. I was surprised that the course did not have us run on the boardwalk for long. This is easily a PR course. My only complaint is that no one had a clue about energy gels at mile 16! It was marked as a gel stop on the course map, but none of the volunteers knew what I was talking about; thankfully, I bummed a gel off a fellow runner at mile 20. Post-race goody bags, finisher hats, free beer and stew were well-received! Overall, a good experience minus the missing gels.

Fast, Flat, Fabulous

This was my 24th marathon and my first in Virginia Beach. It is definitely one to remember. The weather was gorgeous, and it was a real treat to finish on the boardwalk. The only negative was that there was no post-race photographer. However, the free beer and live music made up for that!!

Great Race, Great Conditions

This was the perfect day... great temps, virtually no wind, and the usual, nice, flat, fast course. I have run it before and will run it again. As for the lack of goody bags after 5 p.m., don't worry about it. I got one at about 2 p.m. and it was nothing but ads and such... no goodies at all (really, not one). Nice shirt and hat though.

Great Race, Awesome Freebies

This was my first Shamrock and my 16th marathon overall. With that in mind, here are the my thoughts. Course: It was flat, which led to my second best time overall. But I thought that the stretch in Ft. Story was never-ending. It might have been in my head, but those were my thoughts. Also, the stretch between 10-12 - when we were running on the concrete boardwalk - was tough when there was a paved bike path just next to us. Spectators: Awesome. Lots of cheering fans. I can't criticize any thing here. And coming down the chute it was loud, which helps! Expo: Great; and like I said, lots of freebies, a great shirt, an ok gym bag, a lunch bag and a a sweet hat (plus medal). The best deal in running! Course Support: water/Gatorade seemed like it was everywhere... extra special thanks for that. The signs with the corny jokes during the flat empty stretch (16-20) helped pass the time. My only complaint here was that the energy gel was supposed to be available at 16 and at 24 but I only saw it at 24. (By the way, that's way too late for energy gel. If you need it to finish at 24, you probably shouldn't be running marathons.) Overall, a really fun race (nothing like taking off your shoes and socks and walking on the beach after!) and I'll be back to do it again!

Most fun and definitely the most green!

First my apprehension. I drove from Michigan for this, my 15th marathon state. It's just a gimmick to fill some hotel rooms in the off season, I thought; how dedicated could this organization/community really be? Well, first... off-season meant some reasonably priced hotel rooms right on the beach, and less crowded local Virginia attractions (i.e. Jamestown, Yorktown, Williamsburg). The expo was at the modern Convention Center, and was decked out in the whole Shamrock theme. At least 60 vendors, a good selection of Shamrock Marathon apparel (including silly hats, glasses, beads, etc.), and an entertaining show of Irish reel dancing. I'm not partial to the disposable timing chips yet, as my adhesive didn't work so I ended up wrapping it up in scotch tape, and I saw more than a few runners wearing the wrong (instruction) half of the chip. The half and full marathons had different starts to alleviate the running crowd and the walkers were lined up in the rear. The pace groups really clotted up the course at times though, and were difficult to circumvent (so the lesson is to line up in your appropriate pace!). The course itself ran South down "hotel row" (Atlantic Ave.), by the Virginia Aquarium, through Camp Pendleton, north along the boardwalk, up around Fort Story and by the historic Cape Henry lighthouse and back south to finish on the boardwalk. This is a flat, enjoyable and mostly closed course. There were pockets of spectator and volunteer support throughout but mostly the cheering was along the beach and in front of the hotels. Weather was perfect - a little brisk at the start, but sunny, mild and only a light breeze off the water (I heard we were lucky with the wind this year). The finish was a great atmosphere on the beach! There was a big tent with live music, plenty of beer and, although we were limited in the big top to Irish stew or fruit, runners were also given a snack lunch bag at the finish (along with a finisher's hat). If you were physically unable to dance, well... you could just lie on the sand with your Mylar beach blanket and enjoy the spectacle. Many runners were into the theme of green... green Elvis, green Batman and Robin, funny wigs, face paint, etc. To me, though, the discerning characteristic of this run was the rallying support of the organization down to the the last people to cross the finish out beyond 7 hours when most runners had long gone home. I watched the trailing walkers, a valiant wheeler, a heart-transplant recipient and then a parade of green inching down the boardwalk. Massing over the last portions of the course, cheering volunteers escorted and encouraged the last man as he limped across the finish under a tremendous outpouring of acclaim, and there was still some stew and beer waiting for him!

A must-do!!

Perfect weather (if not a bit too sunny), great course, great schwag, well organized, enthusiastic crowds, fun finish... This was my second marathon and I couldn't have picked a better one. Expo was crowded but well organized. Packet pick-up was a breeze. Schwag was great: long-sleeve tech shirt, tech hat, goody bag, medal. This one is worth the money.

Highly recommended

My first Shamrock Half, and it was fantastic. Smooth and well run expo, with plenty to gawk at and spend money on. Easy drop-off near the start area, and plenty of porta-potties. Corrals were well marked and regulated. Beautiful, easy, flat course, which runs along the water and culminates with a dash along the boardwalk to the finish. All of the goodies were great, and the volunteer and fan support were first-rate. Most importantly, kudos to the event organizers for ordering up perfect conditions! Only negative (and I'm stretching here) was that I missed some mile markers, due to the wind blowing them down, or for whatever reason. Otherwise, absolutely wonderful event and I will be returning next year.

LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this race!!!!!

This was a great marathon! It was a lot fun for me - and for my husband, who was a spectator. We had a blast the entire weekend. The expo was great as well. I loved the first half of the course especially. The best part was being able to run on the boardwalk. The weather was great with very little wind. I want to send a special thanks to Tim. If it hadn't been for you, I wouldn't have gotten my BQ. You were awesome! I still need to study my turns and get a clearer idea of what you were talking about!

Good marathon

Virginia Beach is a great place to run. The course initially takes you through the beachfront area for a very short time, but then takes you along a couple of shore roads and through two military bases. One of the bases contains historic Cape Henry Lighthouse. I will admit that some of the best cheering of fans came from some soldiers at one of the bases. The running lanes seemed a bit narrow at times for the number of people running. Many times I had to get out of the way for wheelchair athletes who took up a large portion of the lane. Even though it is against the rules, it seemed that a ton of people were wearing headphones. I almost wish I had worn my iPod, as well (now that I know there isn't any enforcement of that rule). The ending was fantastic. There were hot food and refreshments waiting at the end. There was a beach party in a large tent and the sun was bright and warm. Overall, a worthwhile marathon.

The perfect first-timer marathon!

The Shamrock Marathon is absolutely the best! The course is gentle enough for a first-timer, and fast enough for the best of the best and a Boston Qualifier to boot! The course is scenic, shady, sunny, and filled with water, Gatorade, energy packs stops and bathroom stops, and encouraging volunteers. Plus, music at the perfect mile markers to keep you "O.P." - on pace. Did I mention that there are also designated pacers for different finish times? My pacers were Marie Bartoletti and Mark. We were the 4:30 group. At every mile marker, Marie would sing ' "Do you see what I see?? It's mile marker 15! One, two, three...." and then we would all shout, "4:30 ROCKS!" AND WE DID ALL 26.2 MILES TO KING NEPTUNE, where we were handed a medal, bottled water, a banana, goody bag, and warm silver wrap! Then it was off to a huge tent with beer, hot, hearty soup, and music! What an amazing race! Can you tell that I had fun?

Flattest, Fastest Course I Have Ever Run

I chose Virginia Beach as my potential BQ race because I had heard that it was fast and flat. Well, fast and flat is actually an UNDERSTATEMENT. Aside from two ridiculously trivial, minor inclines at miles 3 and 10 totaling 40 feet each, the entire course is, no exaggeration, flat as a pancake. The weather was perfect this year, with sunshine, starting temps in the 40's, and almost no wind at all. Even though I failed to qualify for Boston (I developed nausea at mile 21 and walked/ran to the finish), I still PRed by over 2 minutes, and will definitely be back next year. If you are looking to PR, this is your course. Great post-race party too! Four free beers, and great swag.

Parking!!!!

The parking situation is very difficult. I am aware of arriving early and I did (very early). I had to go in circles for 20 minutes and couldn't find anywhere to park!!! Could a shuttle service be available?? I will run this race again - it's very nice - but I will bring someone along because of parking issues!! I would have loved to stay in a hotel but just couldn't afford it.

Excellent Race

Very well run marathon and half. Good organization, manageable field size, fast course, plenty of water tables, and pretty good crowd support. Plenty of hotels, so it was easy to stay within a few blocks of the start and finish. Wind wasn't an issue in 2009, and the temperature was cool and near perfect. This is very much a PR course if the weather is cool and if the wind is mild, which was the case in 2009.

A great marathon choice

This was my 24th different marathon. My pros far outweigh my cons. I really enjoyed this marathon, and would highly recommend it. Pros: 1. The race director and crew have it together. Organizationally, top-notch. All of the aid stations were fully manned. All the mile markers were accurate and visible. The start and finish were organized - no chaos or confusion. The course was well laid out. The finish area, in a fully enclosed tent on the beach, was great. 2. Finishing on the boardwalk near the Neptune statue was awesome. 3. Beautiful medals. 4. Long-sleeved tech top and nice finisher's hat (although the top (XS) was still too big for a small female). 5. There was a strong community presence on the course - the city is really involved with this event all week-end. The 8K on Saturday was HUGE. 6. It was nice to see the recycling bins at the finish line. 7. Flat course with PR potential. 8. Logistics: staying at a hotel within walking distance to start and finish was great! Cons (these are minor things and only mentioned as things to consider or be prepared for): 1. The Fort Story stretch of the course was difficult for me in that it wasn't scenic and very quiet. I felt like this area needed something to help us along. 2. The 7:00 a.m. half start and 8:00 a.m. full start seemed backwards, but logistically, it wouldn't work the other way without a course change.

flat and fast

For 2009 it was a perfect day to run and it gave me a PR, which was unexpected. The course is as flat as I have seen them. Good water stops and fan support most of the way. I liked having my name printed on my bib. The pace groups all seemed to work well. I can imagine that it could be a windy course, but it was not so in 2009.

Great course, weather, and run

This was a great course with almost no wind, perfect temperature, and it made for a great race. Everything that was given out was also awesome. Highly recommended.

Disappointed

At 5 p.m. on Saturday, the expo was out of goody bags! That is part of the reason I run, for the free goodies!! The food was limited after the race. If you didn't want stew, about the only option you didn't have to pay for was a banana! The finisher hats were a nice touch though! Parking was a nightmare. I was blocked in and couldn't leave for an hour and a half after I completed my race.

Awesome race!

I wanted to be the first to post about 2009. Since I got my BQ after 36 tries, I have nothing but praise for the course. It turned out to be a perfect day, which certainly helped too. Great job, from expo to finish. I would definitely recommend to all!

Not my best, but that's my fault!

This was my second full marathon. While I didn't run at the pace I was hoping for, I can't blame anything about the course or the marathon for that - I just came out too fast, and hit the wall. The expo is very well organized, with lots of vendors and options. The weather for the race was almost perfect - cool from beginning to end, with a bit of light rain. If there hadn't been any wind, it would have been perfect. I'll run this one again!

Fast, if you want it

This was a nice race. I picked this race as a Boston qualifier, and it worked. Flat and fast. Miles 10-12 were difficult due to the wind on the boardwalk, but the rest of the course made up for it. Never did I feel the same wind strength at the end of the race that I felt I was running into earlier on, but no biggie. Did not stick around for the food afterward, as my wife and son had been outside long enough (great running weather; not so great watching-running weather), but I enjoyed the expo on Saturday. Great schwag; I loved the hat. I had a nice weekend and might consider coming back if I need a race to get me near 3 hours.

Fast, flat, well organized race.

I was hesitant to run this race due to the promise of winds, but the 3-hour pace group worked well together to make the best of the conditions. Thanks to Tommy and Michael for pacing the group. They enabled those capable of going under 3 hours to meet their goal (not me, but still a PR!). I thought the SCHWAG was first-rate - nice long-sleeve shirts, bag, hat and cool awards. Great organization, and a good crowd (mostly with 2 miles of the start/finish). I'd definitely recommend this race.

Good race... minor problems

I have to agree with LS that the course (particularly the first mile) was long by about .25 miles. I ran with a buddy and both our Garmin watches were off by .25 miles almost from the first mile - and they stayed that way consistently through the race. Overall, this is a good race. Fast and flat. Unfortunately, the wind didn't cooperate this year, but you never have perfect conditions. Another problem from an organizational standpoint was that they ran out of technical race shirts and printed backpacks at the race expo packet pick-up. It was disappointing to travel from Texas to Virginia for a race and not get to the expo in time to get a shirt. The organizers have promised to print more shirts and mail them out.

I got my BQ/PR at the Shamrock Marathon!

I can't add a lot to the other comments, other than to reiterate that the course is dead flat other than the bridge over the harbor entrance. Despite the fact that the (relatively strong) wind in 2008 was from the north, it didn't have a negative effect on my race. There was about a mile and a half between the 10th and 12th mile markers that was a bit brutal as it was along the boardwalk and subject to the wind. But once we got onto the streets again, the wind wasn't as much a factor - plus we could draft behind other runners. On the way south - miles 21 to 26 - the wind was at our backs, which was just what I needed. The finish was well organized, although I should have set up a designated meeting spot for my wife in the (huge) finisher's tent (e.g. near the north-east beer dispensary) as we wandered around for about a half hour and never did find each other. Each runner gets 4 beer tickets, which was sufficient. Well, actually, I didn't use all of mine because I had to go find my wife, who had gone back to the hotel room! Anyhow, I got my BQ at the Shamrock Marathon after two prior attempts at other marathons: one I missed because I succumbed to the heat, another because of a brutal headwind. The great course at Virginia Beach allowed me to get my BQ - and the beer at the end was a very welcome added bonus!

Great Small-Town Race

I'm going to have to disagree with L. S. from Southeast USA on a few points... but only a few. :) I think that the clock was correct. I ran the full marathon. My watch and a friend's watch, who I ran with, were only a few seconds off of our posted chip time. Both my friend and I ran with a GPS watch. I didn't notice that the mile markers were 0.25 off. We were pretty much on target pace-wise for all of the early miles. I did notice that most (if not all) of the mileage markers were set on top of paint markers on the road. This means that the mileage markers were set where they were supposed to. Whether the paint job was off is debatable. I think that this is a great small-town race. The course is completely flat except for one tiny bridge span. I've run Chicago, and Chicago is nowhere near as flat as Shamrock. I didn't have to fight the crowd at any point during the race. That's a wonderful thing compared to the major marathons. I love the free long-sleeve tech shirt as well as the tech hats that were handed out at the end of the race. The medal is pretty cool. I thought that it was a pretty well run race. The water station volunteers were in abundance. I was in Vegas for the Vegas Marathon and some of their water stations only had 1 or 2 volunteers. The organizers and volunteers at Shamrock definitely stepped up to the plate. This is no small task since it's a two day racing event. Finding volunteers for one day is hard enough, let alone two. The finish line was on the boardwalk, so if you had a hotel along the boardwalk, you were back to the hotel in no time. The finish line was not crowded. I found that to be quite pleasant. They gave us a food bag at the end with PowerBar, cookie, pretzel, and a bunch of other stuff. In some of the other marathons that I've run, your food wouldn't have been handed to you in a bag like that. I thought that that was a nice touch. Porta-johns? Who cares? I'm a man. The world is my porta-john. :) Overall, it was a nice race with good people and great organization.

Easy Fast Course; Food Disappointing

This was a good, fast course, with no major complaints except for the wind (though, it's on the beach, so it was destined to be). PROS: -Flat, fast course -Nice people. I had a lot of good conversations along the course. -Running on the base brought out my patriotic side. :) -Appreciated the hat that was given to us at the finish. CONS: -Not enough porta-potties. -Stew and beer only in the tent? Really? The two were not at the top of my list on things to eat after a marathon. The only fruit I saw were the bananas being handed out by a man immediately after I crossed the finish line. The food bags were nice but I felt, overall, the food offered was lacking. Maybe I'm just spoiled.... -I went to this race with a friend of mine and both of our watches were over a minute and a half off of what the official times were - meaning that the offical time was over what we had. I can understand anything within 30 seconds but almost 2 minutes? Something was off. -Mile markers were off by about a quarter-mile. No big deal in the beginning, but very disheartening when you're towards the end. Overall, had a good time and met some awesome people. I would recommend this race for others.

Lovely Course and People!

I love this course! Many interesting sights along the way including the ocean, a tree-lined road and a huge lighthouse. Great pace team too! I was wondering how one of the guys pacing the 3:50 group kept getting more energized with each mile! Great motivation and team spirit. Great organization. And, the community seems to know about and support fully this event. Thanks too to the police who were very helpful. This one is the total package and worth consideration for an early-season run.

great race

This race was my second, and it was a great experience. I shaved 17 minutes off of my time! The course was totally flat (except for one elevated bridge), the weather nearly perfect besides a little wind, and the shamrock spirit was infectious! Thanks to all of the volunteers; the aid stations were very well run. Just need some porta-potties at the starting line (they were all at the half-marathon start, 10 blocks away!!). Running through the army barracks was a treat, though Fort Story was disappointing. All in all, a great race. I'll be back.

Great first marathon

I entered this race because I teach and it fell on my spring break. I wanted to run a marathon for a long time and decided this would be my first. Positives were: -Fun course with only one boring spot - and they tried to remedy that with interesting signs to read. -Great on-course support. -Great marking of the course. -Outstanding medal, shirt, hat, bag, etc. (as give-aways). Negatives: -My results were lost at first but they turned this into a positive by getting it straightened out really quickly. -Ran out of food at the tent (I went and showered before feeling like eating, and it was gone). Maybe soup tickets like beer tickets would be a good idea. I was extremely excited because I made it a whacky goal to Boston Qualify, and I was able to do so. This makes the race just that much more special for me. I was told I picked a tough race to do this in so that made me feel pretty good. It was pretty windy after all.

Among The Very Best

This was my 3rd Shamrock Marathon and my 20th marathon. The Shamrock Marathon continues to be my overall favorite. The enthusiasm is great. The course is great. The registration process is a breeze. Although I like to run along the ocean and tend to seek out seaside marathons, my favorite part of this course actually is the trek through the woods along Shore Drive and and through Fort Story (miles 16-22.5). After all of the hustle and bustle and crowd support during the first 16 miles, it is nice to have some peace and quiet, especially through those tough middle miles. Then the crowd picks up again for the final four miles. The shirt is among the best. I wear the hats all year long and in other races. The best thing about Virginia Beach, though, is the hotels. Many large, reasonably-priced, oceanfront hotels within a short walk of the start and finish. Traveling with four kids, we have stayed in comfortable and affordable suites all three years, and I can roll out of bed and walk to the start. Two negatives this year bring the score down a bit: the expo was congested and less interesting than in the past, and, as noted below, there was no food for the late finishers. The Irish stew is one of the perks we paid for, and it was gone. Still, this remains my overall favorite.

Marathon Had a Great Vibe!

What a spectacular marathon and one you should consider doing! I've never been to Virginia Beach, VA but came to appreciate the tremendous hospitality there. All the volunteers and aid station workers had happy attitudes - you could just tell they were into it and that means so much to the runners. Kudos to the race committee for stressing that attitude and leading a well organized event. Will somebody pat the police officers on the back for a job well done? The traffic control was excellent. Way to go! My timing chip worked great even though I see others' didn't - bummer to run 26.2 for no post time! Prefer the bombproof competitors brand over the "wannabe" systems. Loved the way the finish line was set up - at every station you ended up getting something (medal, goody bag, hat, water, fruit, space blanket). Felt good. Never made it to the tent on the ocean but sounded like everyone was having a blast! Thanks for a wonderful experience.

Great 1/2 Marathon for First-Timers

This was my first 1/2 and I loved it. Even though the course did get a little quiet through the trees and Ft. Story the changing scenery, the waves crashing on the beach and the lighthouses made up for it. The volunteers were absolutely amazing and the really make a difference. Would like to see different-colored markers on each mile as well. Thought I was daydreaming and missed the 9 flag when I went from Mile 8 to 10. I did like the neoprene chip bands - very comfortable. Quite a few locals come out as well to cheer everyone on all along the course. I swear I smiled for the first 12 miles! The last I laughed all the way through. Really great finish line and nice technical shirts and hats coupled with a warm finish party made this first one really memorable. Great job to everyone who put this together and thank you for a great first 1/2. See you next year.

WELL DONE!!!!

What a well done marathon! A great experience! I am a walker, but had support throughout the entire marathon! Great crowd support, great traffic control, well-staffed water stations. The weather was windy, but what can you say!? The beach scenery was spectacular... and the finish at the Neptune statue is great. The cap and finisher shirt were first-class! Don't miss this one!!!!

Boy is this one flat!!

Not a bad event! Everything was extremely easy to get to and while the expo was small it had everything you would expect! The course was the flattest one I've ever done and the only incline was a bridge we ran over twice. I don't really even recall any subtle altitude changes, so if you want flat, this one is definitely it! Contrary to the half posting below, I really liked running through the trees from 16-19. Very peaceful! Spectator-wise there wasn't much. I did see some people but it was surprising to see so few people supporting the event! The volunteers were great, though, and I thought the aid stations were placed just right! Suggestions: Run more of the course on the boardwalk by the ocean! I thought we'd see a few miles or more of it but we really didn't run much on it. Also, start the half marathoners 90 minutes earlier rather than 60. I saw some of the faster marathoners have to maneuver around the back of the pack of half walkers and increasing the gap between the two would help quite a bit!!

Great organization

This marathon was a well-organized and rewarding experience. The pace groups were great, and especially welcome on a day dealing with some headwinds. Enjoyed it, although the course was a little benign and redundant at times.... It certainly was perspective-changing, though, seeing all the military recruits cheering us on at the Army base....

This is the best marathon I have ever run in.

The shirts, caps and expo were first-class. The course was well marked and manned; and the wind made this a challenging marathon. They did run out of food at the post party. But plenty of cold beer. My chip worked fine and I do like the ease with which it comes off after the race. We got lucky with the weather. Hope to do it next year.

Fast and Flat

I came into this race after having a knee issue and had very little expectations of what the race would be. I wanted to finish no matter what and hoped to make it under 4 hours (PR is 3:49). The weather was iffy, but turned out great: mid 40's and overcast. I stuck with a pace group for most of the race. The course was fast and flat even with the wind. Running in a pack really helped. Best part was finishing on the boardwalk with a bunch of a screaming fans on the one side and the ocean on the other and most importantly... a tailwind. The expo was very well organized and easy to get to. I was able to get a cheap hotel on the beach 2 blocks from the finish. I could also walk to the start. Very fan friendly course. Sure you can't get too much fan support through the military base (as commented on earlier), but there were plenty of runners around and the military guys came out to cheer everyone along. The timing chip issue is there with every race. With thousands of chips, a few are going to have problems. Last year's complaints were from one person who wore it on her wrist (duh, can't imagine why that didn't read) and someone who wore it under pants!! There was music along the way at certain parts and the signage around the 16 to 19 stretch was entertaining and helped get me through the "boring" middle-of-nowhere part. Such sayings as "man who run behind car get exhausted" among others, along with interesting facts about Virginia. The mile markers were very visible (not sure about the prior comment as to the missing ones). I think they must have had their head down or something. They were about 8-feet tall and bright green (you could see them a 1/4 mile away). The volunteers were very supportive and it was nice to hear my name announced as I crossed the finish line. Also was nice to have the medal placed around my neck (most races just handed theM to you). The volunteers made you feel very important the whole day. Finisher hats were a nice touch and cool to see later that night out at the bars and the following day. Great wicking shirt and fantastic-looking medals. Post-race tent was a nice, warm place to eat some stew and sip on a free Yuengling (you could get 4 free). All in all, a great race... definitely would have a PR'd if it were not for my injury and thus lack of training. The wind wasn't much of a factor as a lot of the course is shielded from the wind, and the final 5 or 6 miles had a tailwind, which made it easier to run over the wall. My only suggestions would be to have more than one lane to run through during the mid miles. It did get congested. Also, during this same stretches, it made it difficult to get to the water/Gatorade since the tables were only on one side (a lot of runners were tripping over each other to get drinks). Great for a first-timer or someone looking for a PR or BQ. SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!!!

Fun race; timing problems too.

I also wore my chip as directed and it picked up my times for some splits but not for all. It didn't include my finish time. Big problem is I needed the lag time to show up on the difference between gun time and chip time (which I am confident is there) to BQ. Now what? The race was a lot of fun though. I though the military base part was great with the guys out there doing cadences and pumping the runners up. The boring part is through Fort Story, even though there were some interesting signs out there to read to break up the monotony of the scenery. I was really pleased with the medal and the schwag and such. I think they need to limit the consumption somehow on the stew because I didn't get any (didn't feel like eating until awhile after I finished and I saw a lot of people - mostly kids - running around with cups of it even though I know most of them didn't run the marathon or half). There were a lot of runners still coming in when I went in the tent to get this.

Great Smallish Marathon

This was my first marathon with fewer than 30,000 people, which I actually preferred - I wasn't running into people at water breaks, but there were enough (close to 3,000) to keep me pumped. The course was excellent, and almost entirely flat. I loved finishing right on the beach. They also had these hilarious signs posted on the middle stretches when there weren't spectators, which kept us all entertained. The expo wasn't huge, but the Brooks technical shirts were fantastic. The finish was very well organized, and finishers got a great sports hat as well as a medal. The finisher's tent was fabulous, with beef stew and FOUR free beers (on tap!) per participant, thanks to the main sponsor Yeungling (I, however, could only stomach one after running 26.2 miles....). I have only two complaints. The first is, I am almost positive the second to last clock was wrong. It was at mile 25 and said I was at 4:15, yet my clock finish was 4:33. There is no way it took me 18 minutes to go 1.2 miles! Secondly, they need more spectators/bands/cheerleaders/etc. from mile 20-25. I needed some serious motivation and the spectators were scarce until the final stretch on the beach. Overall, though, fantastic.

My first Shamrock Run

All in all this was a good race. The expo was a bit disappointing; I expected it to be bigger. I ran the Dolphin Challenge (8K and 1/2 Marathon). The 8K course was excellent and the fans were awesome. The 1/2 marathon course was a bit boring through the trees and then through Fort Story. There were very few fans to encourage the runners. Although, the trees I'm sure helped break the winds for us. Some of the mile markers were missing and made it difficult for a first-time runner. A suggestion for next year would be to have the 1/2 marathon mile markers one color and the marathon mile markers a different color. When the courses crossed, it got a bit confusing. The fans and volunteers were outstanding! The energy level at the finish was incredible! I will most likely be back at Shamrock next year!

Nice event, but rethink the timing system.

It is very frustrating to invest your time, money and effort traveling to and running an event and and then not get your time captured. After reading the comments on prior year events on the system used here, I was very careful to place the timing chip as low on my ankle as I could get it, but in the end I did not get a finish time. It would seem from my review of the initial results published that this is far more than an isolated issue. With the systems and technologies available today for timing, I think the organizers need to seriously re-think their timing strategy/supplier for the future. Other than that, this is a very nice event.

Pretty decent race; just needs more on course

I have run my first half marathon and decided the Shamrock would be my first. Here are my comments: Pros: -lots of Shamrock spirit - expo -free goodies! -volunteers and supporters were GREAT! Cons: -course got a little boring through the military base -every mile not marked -entertainment on course was very limited - more music needed All in all, I thought this race was great. I really enjoyed myself.

A perfect first marathon

The course was flat, the volunteers were amazing, and the scenery was varied and interesting. I would've preferred a shoe chip to an ankle one. I wore mine on my wrist and never got picked up by the mats, but since my goal was simply to finish, I wasn't too concerned with a precise time.

Fun race, but a little more organization needed

I ran the 1/2 marathon. This was a fun race, but be aware, you're not running in the sunny south. It snowed Saturday, and there was definitely a bite in the wind. Definitely one of the flattest courses I have run! Course got a little dull through Ft. Story - not many spectators. I absolutely hate the ankle timing chips - wish they would use the shoe type. Porta-potty lines were long; I stood in line for 10 minutes. However, plenty of porta-potties at the end of the race, with no one in line - maybe a few of the ones at the end of the course could be put in the middle? Start was pretty disorganized, but all in all, it was a good race worth attending. Great for beginners.

It was a (stiff) breeze

I waited until my shirt arrived to post this and true to organizers' words, it did. Had great fun, despite the wind. Yeah, there weren't a lot of fans, but hey, it's a smaller marathon, and the ones that were there were great. How many of you would stand out there in those conditions cheering on slugs like us? Can't say enough about the volunteers, too. Special thanks to one at the finish who helped me thru my cramping. Lodging tip: Try Barclay Cottage B&B. Never thought staying at a B&B for a race would be convenient, but boy was I wrong. We got a carb breakfast (bagels, bananas, etc.) about 6 a.m., rides to and from the start/finish and had a yummy full breakfast (brunch) after, complete with celebratory mimosas. Co-owner Steve even came out to the course to cheer us on.

Great run that I would gladly do again.

This is a perfect March race. I only did the half-marathon. Race day this year was about 32 degrees, but it wasn't bad once we got going. There was plenty of water and the course was flat. It was a little thin on spectators and the marathon folks got hit with some brutal winds. Overall, the only change I would look for is clocks at every mile, which might not be feasible with both the half and full marathons going at the same time! I'll be back next year.

this marathon will leave a mark

I will probably always remember this marathon not just because of my medal and certificate, but because of the scars that I now have on my ankle from the ankle chip band we had to wear. I have never run a race where the chip wasn't on my shoe, and I guess I put the band on too tight (I didn't want it moving around!) and the velcro wound up cutting my leg. I also had a friend who wore her band under pants and the mats didn't pick up the chip at all and she was left out of the results. They should definitely use the shoe chips. They also ran out of marathon shirts before the expo was over (the shirts are very nice though) and you received a hat at the finish, which I thought was nice additional touch. There appeared to be a lot of beer and food at the finish, which I did not have an appetite for. Overall I thought the marathon was an enjoyable experience. I liked the finish along the beach, and the random thoughts posted along that long stretch of the race before Fort Story where there was no one around humored me. I do have to thank the awesome pacers that found me in the last few miles and helped me run under 3:40 when I would have given up otherwise. I had never run with a pace group before and those pacers were outstanding!

A Positive Update

I gave a generally positive review for this race a few pages back, but came back again to add this: I first noted that they ran out of marathon shirts and took names down, hastily, saying that they would mail them to us later. Guess what? I actually DID get mailed the marathon shirt about 2.5 weeks after the race! It's one thing to mess up the shirts, but I'm very pleased and impressed that they went and fixed it.

Good PR course; good finish

Very flat and pretty well-organized course, great medal, good beer and music at the finish. Expo was a bit disorganized, and the water stops were a little confusing, trying to figure out where the Gatorade was going to be (though maybe it was just me getting tired). Also, I didn't like the ankle strap timing chip (chafed and left a very slight bruise), but the problems were minor. Not the most interesting course, and one long stretch in particular was pretty dull and lonely. But I was surprised in general by the crowd support - I'd heard it didn't get many spectators, and I would have thought the cold weather would make things even worse, but the crowds weren't bad. Not huge (and completely missing for that one long stretch because of the course route), but very vocal and in good spirits. It helped that we had names on our bibs - I was surprised how much it helped hearing my name, especially the last stretch along the boardwalk. The only other downside, as everyone else mentioned, was the weather. It snowed briefly the day before, was in the 30s at the start, and was insanely windy for most of the middle part of the course. But making that turn at mile 20 and feeling the tailwind kick in, all the way to the end... that made up for everything. Not the most exciting town in the world, or the best food. Bring snacks and entertainment, and plan ahead (make reservations) for your pre-race dinner, as the restaurants filled up quickly. Probably wouldn't do this race again except for the speed of the course, but overall I thought the organizers did a good job creating a fast, fun race.

Fast and Festive !!!

I really enjoyed the race !!! My running buddy and I dressed up with crazy outfits, and had planned on taking it somewhat easy, but the energy from the crowed carried us both to PRs. PROS -We dressed up as did a lot of others...made the energy real high. -Medals are great -Finishers hats were cool -Beer Tent and Stew were yummy (thanks for the tent) -Cheaper hotels than R&R Half -Less crowded than R&R Half -Course support was great (but, they kept on asking me to vote for their water stop, and I never saw where to do that). CONS -Expo, not that bad, but not the best. Need more Shamrock gear. -I actually saw Marathon leaders having to make their way through the Half Marathon's final finishers on the course. I wouldn't have liked that. -Wind - but what can you do about that? -Didn't like the timing chip on the ankle. -Would have liked a little more music on the course (not live, just speakers)

RUNNING OUT OF SHIRTS IS INEXCUSABLE!

Overall they did a good job, DESPITE the organizers! Definitely worth coming back to or if you need the state, then this is the one to do. CONS 1. FIRST IMPRESSIONS COUNT! I may be overreacting; but when you drive 10+ hours, your first impression when you arrive is important. They had run out of shirts which I cannot understand. Whats the point in pre-registering? 2. The expo was very poor for a race this size. 3. The water stations were very chaotic. Some were definitely overwhelmed and undermanned (though I thank and admire anyone who was out there). 4. Mile markers were off! On a qualifying course it can be a problem. 5. They advertise as having the best swag. Unless they are talking about the beer then they are truly out to lunch! It was as bad as any! Having said that, I really enjoyed the Shamrock overall: PROS 1. I was really looking forward to this one as I had heard about the post race party. It did not disappoint! 2. The course was as advertised, flat and fast despite the wind (which you have no control over). 3. Having the 1/2 marathon go earlier and on the second half of the course was a great idea. No problems with the 1/2 marathoners at all. It also helped running the opposite way alongside them. 4. Spectators were great. After reading previous comments I was expecting very few. Boy, was I wrong! Those people complaining should try some of the smaller marathons (Hatfield McCoy comes to mind. When I must have seen maybe 5 the whole course; but it was still a GREAT race!) As mentioned it was cold, yet there were plenty out there. IN ANY MARATHON you are going to get points where there are no spectators. It makes you appreciate them more. THANK YOU TO ALL! 5. Hotels were some of the cheapest I have been to for races! Overall Great JOB!

Windy and quiet, but nice event

Man, was this a windy marathon. From miles 5.5 to 19.5, a steady headwind really tore me up. While I don't need a lot of spectators to keep me going, I was surprised how few there were... almost none! The course runs through two military bases, and it was disappointing that no one was out cheering us on. Course fairly boring and uneventful. Nice finish though. Nice expo for size of the event. Post-race was top-notch, though. Huge tent with ample beer and stew. That was nice. Great t-shirt, finisher hat, and medal.

Loved the atmosphere

My first time at the Shamrock Marathon. Well planned out - I see why it has continued for 35 years. I was warned about the wind, so I was prepared for it, and it was not as bad as I was expecting. The volunteers were great, as was the post-race party. I will be back.

GREAT PR COURSE!!!!!

This was my 6th marathon. I've run 4 Boston Marathons and one Cape Cod Marathon. I PR'd by 24 minutes in Shamrock!! I've never run under 4 hours for a marathon and here I did it in 3:46, which I never imagined. The flat course made a HUGE difference in my time and recovery. Small field - under 2,000. The only time it's crowded is during the first 2 miles, but it's not as crowded as Boston. Yes, it was extremely windy, but I was warned by reading last year's comments and I'll take the wind any day to hills. I stayed at the Holiday Inn SunSpree where they were very nice; and it was close to the start and finish. Also there is a 7-11 across the street to get coffee that morning. The marathon finisher's hat was nice and the finisher's medal was great too. My only complaint is that I got to the expo at 4 p.m. on Saturday (due to my flight from Boston being delayed for 24 hours in Pittsburgh because of a snow storm). I walked into the expo on Saturday afternoon to get my bib number, timing chip and shirt, only to find out they ran out of the marathon tech shirts. I was very disappointed, since the shirts were so nice and I'd traveled so far. They asked if I wanted a half marathon shirt instead or they would mail me a marathon shirt. I didn't want a half marathon shirt so I put my name on the mailing list and also e-mailed the race director, Amy, who was extremely nice and promised to mail me a shirt. Not to make a huge deal of it, but I flew there from Massachusetts and did a PR; and the shirt is nice. Hopefully they will actually mail me one. True, there weren't a ton of spectators from mile 16-23, but there were funny "deep thoughts/Jack Handy" signs that helped pass the time, and I was just so happy to run on a flat course that I didn't mind. There were a few radios out there, and DJ's. Another good thing is that all of the runners' first names were printed in big letters on the bib numbers, so many strangers did cheer for me, which was nice. They had "pace group" too, which helped me secure my finish time. I first ran ahead of the 4-hour guy carrying a sign, and then eventually the 3:50 guy. Other than the running out of the marathon tech shirts, this is a fantastic, flat race for anyone looking to PR. One thing I'd recommend to anyone flying down is to rent a car. We didn't and relied on taxis, which were fine from the airport, but once in VA Beach they would take forever to arrive. I needed one to go to the expo and back, and to dinner and back, and then to the airport.

First-time marathoner - loved this event

I have run a few 1/2 marathons including Country Music and Rock 'n Roll, and I thought Shamrock was a much better event. Expo was well organized and had everything you needed. There weren't a lot of spectators but the ones who did brave the cold/wind were very loud and provided great motivation. Our race numbers also had our first names on them, and it was great to hear spectators cheer people on by name. The first 1/2 of the course is very similar to the Rock 'n Roll - very flat and lots of space. DJ's and fans were cheering everyone on, there was plenty of water stations, and there were plenty of gels. Miles 16-19 were the most boring, with no DJ, and only a few spectators. Mile 22 had people handing out beer, if you were up for it. Finishing up on the boardwalk is a nice touch, with the wind at your back. Didn't go to the finisher's tent for the beer, but I heard they had plenty for everyone. Great medal, finisher's t-shirt and hat. I loved this race and will be back next year.

Good course; poor organization

I loved the flat, fast course. The weather was cold at the start but warmed up. There was a headwind going south, but we had a tailwind heading home, so it all balanced out. What I did NOT like: when picking up the race packet on Saturday, there was a separate line to pick up the timing chip. There were TWO stations handing out chips for 8,000 marathoners and half-marathoners. The line was wrapped around and around. This is my third Shamrock and it was never disorganized like this before.

A fun and friendly marathon

I thoroughly enjoyed myself from well before the race until well after. It was chilly and brisk. But after all it was March. Everyone was friendly and supportive. I was surprised at how many fans braved the cold and how many volunteers were on the course. I have nothing but praise and admiration for all that the organizers and volunteers accomplished. It was fun and it was friendly. The post-race stuff was great, and my family and I had a very good time. Thanks.

Good Marathon

The Virginia Beach Marathon this year had all the makings of a fast marathon. Flat and cool. What headwind we had from mile 13 to 19 turned into a great tailwind to the finish along the boardwalk, with the ocean on our left. The aid stations were well-manned - other than the first one, which was a bit overwhelmed with the runners still bunched up. Plenty of water, Gatorade and Gu were offered. Enjoyed the orange slices. The expo was good, except that the timing chips were not available on Saturday morning. I went out for lunch and returned for my chip. Having run 13 marathons, this one is definitely recommended. After completing the 50 states, I plan to return to Virginia Beach. If you're planning your first marathon, this one would be a good choice. If you need to feed off a mob of spectators, go with New York or Chicago.

A running experience to be forgotten

This marathon was on my list because it was being promoted as flat and fast. I was disappointed by several things. The expo wasn't good; there weren't too many vendors. I was in and out in 15 minutes compared to many others that were much larger. In addition, there were no endurance drink sponsors of any kind. If you want something to drink, bring your own. The course itself was nice but it was a bit boring from miles 16-22 when there were no spectators at all. The town itself was dull. There was nothing to do and most stores were closed for the season. I guess there are parts that are great but I didn't feel like there was a whole lot to do. Some of the locals did not care at all that tourists were in town spending money. The shirt and hat provided at the expo and at the end of the race were nice. This race, however, will easily be forgotten. It's a shame; they really should look at Myrtle Beach.... Perhaps it can improve.

Great March Marathon

The course was fast and flat and, although windy in spots, the wind was not as much an issue as I thought it would be. Great shirt, finisher's hat and medal. If I could ask for one improvement, I would like to see a 7 a.m. start time for the marathon, but think it was great that they separated the 1/2 and full starts.

Good First Marathon Location...

Pros: -Great long-sleeve shirt -Finisher's hat -Finisher's medal -Expo (didn't buy anything though... though the expo center was brilliant) -Ease of organization -Free beer/beef stew -First 12.5 miles and last mile are perfect -Pacers (started at 4:30, passed 4:15 at mile 4, almost caught up to 4:00 at mile 17, but fell back to 4:15) -Spectators -Actual road closures (partial on main roads). Cons: -Seafood buffets are expensive and not worth it -Going through Fort Story was a major letdown to me (miles 20-22.5); something didn't feel right -Me not getting the time I wanted, but that was my own fault

Great first 1/2 marathon

What a blast! A flat and fast course. A little chilly first thing in the morning, but that has more to do with a time change than anything else. Organization seemed top-notch for the number of people in the race. Plenty of water stops, and plenty of volunteers. Thank you, Shamrock.

Fast, Flat Boston Qualifier

This was my 5th marathon and by far my favorite so far. This is a flat, fast course with small field, making it perfect for a Boston qualifier (3:14 finish time). Be prepared for the wind and find people you can work with for drafting purposes. Much thanks to the 5-6 people in the unofficial "3:10" pace group that helped block the wind for the 10 miles running north. The organization at chip pick-up could have been better. Nice touch of putting the first name on the bib; that led to many people calling me by name toward the end. Food at the end could be better.

Awesome First Marathon

This was my first marathon. What an amazing experience! It was so well organized. I ran the Philly Half Marathon and found this one to be much smoother as far as expo, water stops, porta-potties, etc... not to mention the wonderful after party! You will probably hear a lot about the headwinds during the middle of the race, and it was painful, but what can you do? It is at the beach, after all. Besides, it sure was nice to have the wind to my back during the last 6 miles! All in all, I have been bitten by the marathon "bug" and will definitely be back for more!

Magical

This is my 2nd year back for the half marathon and I'm signing up for number 3. All I can say is, "Thank you, thank you, thank you to the Shamrock Race committee. A bang up job!!!!!!!" I came with a plan to run a pace and beat it by almost 5 minutes.... Truly a magical experience. See you next year.

The flatness saved the course

This was a nice mid-sized marathon with amazing volunteers (although I still have never found a volunteer I did not like). The course was boring for the most part, except for the couple of miles you get to run along the boardwalk. The GREAT: The 1/2 started on a different course and an hour before the marathon. No mingling of the 2 races. Best organization I have ever seen for this, and other race directors need to take notice of this! The GOOD: Plenty of water stops and fans. The course was flat. The race director was very helpful with questions. Finisher's hat - nice touch, and better than a finisher's shirt. The BAD: Ran out of shirts at the expo. The course is boring. Very windy too, although I would not expect the RD to do anything about that. Overall, a good experience, but I don't think I would return.

Beautiful Setting, Lacking Organization

The theme for a St. Patrick's Day marathon was fun, and the ocean setting was beautiful; but organizationally, this race was lacking. The organizers ran out of t-shirts for pre-registered participants before the expo ended on Saturday. In addition, the ankle bands used for timing caused chafing for a lot of runners (especially those wearing shorts) and were dramatically inferior to chips you can wear on your shoes. Two days after the race, about half the runners are still missing from the results because of the poor organization with the same pace bands. For a marathon of this caliber in its 35th year, I expected better organization.

Great marathon

This was our first marathon and we were impressed throughout. Signing up was a breeze and the website was continually updated with information and news. The race director sent out several emails with more information and the result was that we flew into Virginia Beach for our first marathon with a very good understanding of everything that was about to happen. The volunteers were great and they took care of us the entire time so we could focus on the run. The course was very flat except for two hills, and our pacer was a stud. The only gripe we have is we would have liked more spectators. The fans that were there were awesome, but the final stages of the run are on an expressway and an Army post, so the spectators are very few. Other than that, the course was beautiful, the race was well run, and the awards presented afterwards were top-notch. This was a great experience for our first marathon!

Decent marathon but not too memorable

This was my first Shamrock Marathon. I thought it would be a good marathon - flat and fast from what I had read previously. Well, it was flat, but the weather was not ideal. The wind was a bigger obstacle than the temperatures. I think the wind was around 20 mph. Wow, it really hit me on some spots of the course. I was told by several locals that the weather was "unusual." I'd say! We saw flurries on Saturday. Far from beach weather. The course itself was nice; it was scenic and it highlighted the nice areas of VA Beach. The water and Gatorade stations were well managed and so were the mile markers. The expo was disappointing. There weren't many exhibitors and usually there are distributors of Gatorade, PowerAde, or other endurance drinks. Here there were none. I was in and out in about 15 minutes. I've never been to VA Beach and I'm sure there are many things to do, but there were many stores that were closed for the season and it turned out that my husband and I drove back early since we were basically bored. I probably won't run this one again. It's pretty forgettable but the organization and mechanics of the actual race were good.

Nice race

Well, this was my 4th marathon, and my best time yet. The course is FLAT, but don't let that fool you - I would much rather have hills than the headwind we were running into from mile 10-18 or so. The medals were great, and the hat is fantastic. My only complaint: They ran out of shirts for the marathoners. I have no idea how you run out of shirts, especially after these people are spending $80 to run the race. If people registered late, they should be the ones who have shirts sent to them - not people who pre-registered. But, supposedly the shirts are being sent. Overall, great run.

Good "sportsfest" weekend - mile markers were off!

The weekend was a great time - my daughter ran her first race (8K). The wind was horrible (steady 20-30 mph winds out of the north - direct headwind from mile 10 to 19) but obviously beyond anyone's control. I will definitely do this event again (either full or half) but I have some comments/suggestions: 1) The markers for miles 5 through 7 were way off. I was in a pack of runners at mile five, where the wind was not a factor. We were running a steady sub-8-minute pace, yet mile 5 showed an 8:49 pace. We ran with the same effort and mile 6 showed 6:49 pace. Again wind was not a factor! (Not yet anyway.) Mile 7 was just as bad. 2) The 3:20 pace setter (with flag) was followed at no more than 100 yards by the 3:30 pace setter - someone was off. 3) Consider having water/Gatorade every mile from mile 20 on. The water every mile and a half may work up to that point, but it surely is missed in the later miles. 4) The marathon shirt and cap are awesome, perhaps the best handout I have received to date - thank you.

It's COLD in Ireland this time of year!

Greetings to all. Shamrock '07 was #35 in my ongoing quest for 50 states (+DC) - 43 total. First off, I must thank all of your WONDERFUL VOLUNTEERS for standing in the near-freezing weather to selflessly attend to my needs! Yours is a fabulous course and the atmosphere is downright exciting! Our party of 5 (2 marathoners, 2 8Ker's, and 1 Kid's 26.2-runner) enjoyed 3 of the sponsor restaurants (Hot Tuna, Shore Break, Murphy's) and the HISTORIC Cavalier Hotel.... And I mean ENJOYED! Keep up the great work; we nevered considered doing any other VA marathon just on your reputation. Now we can add our recommendation to all of the others! Thank you so very much!

Organized and positive, but they ran out of shirts

The expo was on Friday and until 6 p.m. Saturday, but they ran out of shirts by 4 p.m. on Saturday! It was nice of them to offer me a half-marathon shirt that said "half-marathon" instead, but I was running twice that distance (it sounds superficial but most marathoners understand what I mean...). However, they took my name and address and promised to mail the correct shirt "eventually," so I hope that will happen. I don't really blame them; they can't anticipate the hundreds of runners who sign up in the week before the race (runners, register earlier than March - I registered in December). Course: The first half is through Virginia Beach and Camp Pendleton (very interesting seeing Army barracks and young soldiers in formation, shining their boots). You end up on Cape Henry on Shore Drive, very spectator-free for about 6 miles, which I personally enjoy for a break, but some people find unbearable - depends on who you are. We also went through a Marine base of sorts. Allegedly the course goes by the Cape lighthouse but I swear I didn't see that thing! Course also runs on the hard, windy concrete boardwalk for blocks and blocks and blocks, which is tough, but that's what you get for a marathon where you can see the ocean. The last five miles are ever-so-slightly downhill back into Virginia Beach, providing a good finish right by the King Neptune statue. Goodies: As I said, no marathon shirt, but at the end I was given a very spiffy medal of silver with a green shamrock in the medal (much better than the tiny medals from Baltimore in October '06, although those were apparently a fluke and the Baltimore organizers didn't realize they would be so small). Also given a VERY nice non-dorky green and white hat that says "26.2 Finisher" in tastefully-sized letters on the back and "Yuengling" on the side. They took off your chip for you and handed you a bottle of water; and there were bananas and Snickers Marathon bars. At that point, you have to walk on the beach for 100 feet or so to get into a huge tent with stew on one side and beer on the other. I'm 19 so I can't speak for the beer. The stew line was so long that I didn't bother getting any. But it was a nice, warm tent. Overall, very festive, and you could tell they tried their best. I really hope they get me that shirt, though. ;) Also nice: the start and finish line are close to a number of hotels (2 Holiday Inns, an Econo Lodge, the nice old Cavalier, a Hilton, a Courtyard).... You can walk to the start and walk back to your room from the finish, which saves a LOT of confusion and hassle.

Skip this race

Virtually no spectators, a strong headwind for six miles, and a boring, less-than-scenic course. Skip this race. Add to it the fact that our car was towed from an empty hotel overflow lot behind a race recommended restaurant. VA beach is more concerned with car towing than in hospitality. Lousy service at local hotels and restaurants. The town didn't seem the least bit interested in supporting runners on the course. I was glad I had my own fan club with me. There were no oranges or bananas on the course and at some points there was no one out there to hand out water to slower runners. A flat, boring course through some really ugly parts (FT. STORY) of VA Beach. No military guys out there cheering. The finish on the boardwalk was great, but where were the fans? DJs along the way provided music but live bands would have been so much better. A lousy course in an unwelcoming town. I'd skip this one. Tiny expo with few quality vendors.

A wonderful experience

Had a great time running the Shamrock yesterday. The weather was perfect, even with the wind, which was not as brisk as last year. Cheers to the spectators who were colder than the runners. The course is fast, I PR'd, and the whole event, including the expo, was well put together. Got a great shirt, which I saw all over the course, a great finisher's hat and a great medal. I waited for my wife so I didn't hit the beer tent until well into hour 5, and there was still beer and stew available. Good job to all.

Very fun, but missing a few things....

This marathon was great for the most part. It started off with a five-mile race on Saturday, which I voluntered to work the finish line. It was exciting to be up close and personal with the winners. I was so pumped and excited to run the race on Sunday after helping on Sat. I really don't have too many complaints about the race itself. There were only two things that made this marathon tough. First the wind was a factor... but the directors cannot change that. Second, between the miles of 16 and 22 you are out in the middle of nowhere and there are no spectators, bands, or anything. Up to this point I was having a blast. Once I hit this stretch, my mind started to wander and I got extremely bored. I think that to make it more enjoyable next year, the directors could put some bands, or music or something along this stretch. I know talking to others they agreed with me. Other than that I would recommend this marathon to everyone. The after-race party was a blast and well laid out. I do plan to run the 2007 Shamrock Marathon.

Small, Flat and Fast

I ran this marathon last year and I must say I enjoyed it immensely. The course was flat and fast. The weather was perfect - cool and sunny. The scenery was great - everything from woods to the ocean to the military bases. The airport was just minutes from the host hotel, and the host hotel was right at the start and the finish. If you like beer, it definitely gets 5 stars in that area! Even as a non-drinker, I had a great time... and I plan to go again in 2007.

Pretty good marathon

It was FREEZING the morning of the race!... maybe mid-30s and very windy, with a strong headwind for about 8-10 straight miles, but a nice breeze bringing you in the last 4 or 5. Not too may spectators out at first, but the middle and end had many military types out shouting their encouragement. The packet pick-up was easy; didn't care for the post-race stuff, had to walk through thick sand to get to tent with dead legs, and that was not fun. There was also a long wait to get a massage. Overall, my time was pretty good, and I enjoyed it. The course was pretty cool.

Didn't care for the Rock

This was only my second half marathon, so maybe I need to run a few more, but I felt there needed to be water or sports drink at the start. Also, there were so many people, there was no way to run at any kind of normal pace for the first few miles. The major gripe I have was the lack of port-o-potties. I had to wait 5 minutes to use a potty at mile 6 and there was only a single potty! For THAT many runners? Outrageous. The finisher's hat was nice, but how about somewhere to change clothes? Someone needs to take a few tips from the Air Force Marathon in Dayton. I'll never run this one again.

This was my 30th marathon and 1st marathon as a pacer. I was pacer for 3:20. I ended up finishing at 3:18. Thanks to those who joined me and I hope you can join me again next year. fast and fun

Windy, windy, windy. I don't want to complain about that or make changes, but I just want to state that the headwind was bad. Race directors can't prepare for that. The course was fun for the first half. I thought it was kind of weird that the half marathon starts 30 minutes before the marathon. Tell your family to stick around for awhile. You run something like the first half of the marathon on an out-and-back and then pick up the half course. The bummer is that run from about 2nd Street all the way up to like 87th Street. Running for 80 blocks on one road was mind-numbing. There were lots of ROTC types on the course to get you motivated. It was a fun course, with good provisions, beer and beef (Irish) stew when you finish to fill you up. Everyone was wasted within two hours of finishing. I ran it this year and the medal had a typo on it saying "VIRGINA" Beach instead of Virginia. got myself a collector's item. I'll do this race again in a few years. I am going all over the nation but it's definitely worth coming back for. Check out Murphy's Pub post-race; wear your medal and someone is bound to buy you a beer.

It's a run for the beer!

This was my 32nd marathon, and Virginia my 17th state in my quest to run the 50 states. Pre-race: Packet pickup was a breeze. Tiny expo. Technical race t-shirt was nice (I say "was nice" because, after two washings it has faded at least by half). Race day: Cold (upper 30's to low 50's), very windy day. The course was scenic - mostly an asphalt road near the beach, some woodsy areas. Virtually dead flat, would make a great PR course with a little less wind. Water stops were adequate. Like a previous poster said, the ankle chip bracelet was nasty. A got a significant sore from it. Post-race: The medal is nice, and the finisher's hat a very nice touch. And the Killian's and food were great, too.

Virgina is for Lovers!!!

I chose this race as my diamond marathon (#75) and it was good. Although it had it's problems with the wind, overall I think it was a great course, well organized and a lot of fun!!! I would rank this in my top ten list of marathons and would recommend doing it. The expo was well done and a good size. The course was interesting with a very convenient start and a finish on the board walk. Many of the problems of previous year's reviewers were solved. I finished at the back of the pack (5:52) and found plenty of food, water, and beer still at the aide stations. The board walk was fenced off and the finish was well organized. The hat at the end that was embroidered with 26.2 or 13.1 miles was a nice touch. Of course the medal is one my favorites as it had dolphins, shamrocks, and misspelled Virginia Beach as 'Virgina Beach.' The error was also on my wife's half marathon medal and added to the charm of the race. When I finished, there was still plenty of food (stew, pretzels, cookies, fruit, bagels) and beer. Needless to say I left with a bag of cookies, a box of pretzels, a stomach full of stew and beer, and my prized medal and hat. A guy from Wisconsin pointed out the error on the medals and a group of very happy (did I mention the sponsor was Killian's and they had plenty of beer this year) college women began chanting a variation of the error and the state slogan. This was a great way to celebrate St. Patrick's day. The organizers did a great job!!!

Excellent Race!

I would highly recommend this race! Very organized, plenty of support along the way. Water AND Gatorade at every stop, etc. I have run both the Marine Corps and the Baltimore Marathons and this one is FAR superior!!

Flat course, cool temps and a beer at the finish!

Great weekend for a race - cool temps, sunny, but a little windy. Course very flat - took 10 minutes off my PR! Spectators sparse in some parts, but the military guys and gals along the way made up for it with their cheers and high energy. Two disappointments - 1) No Mylar blankets when I finished (they didn't start handing them out until the 5:30+ people finished) so I was freezing while I waited for friends to finish and; 2) They were charging for the finisher tent massages! Bummer. Other than that, great race!

Good but not great

Like some others, I had some problems dealing with the wind from miles 7-17. It sapped my energy, and though I tried running with a pace group, they didn't slow down as much as I would have liked at the water stops. The Boy/Cub Scout volunteer stations were great, but one recommendation is to add half bananas at mile 21 and also at the finish. One other suggestion - if the prevailing winds are from the N-NW, would running the course backwards be an improvement since the hotels offer some shelter along the boardwalk?

Great views and small-town feel

The race was well-organized and the areas running along the boardwalk featured outstanding scenery. The course is fast and flat and amply supplied with water and Gatorade, though I would suggest using Endurance Formula next year. I never used the port-a-potties on the course but there seemed to be plenty of them. The weather cooperated (mid 30's to mid 40's and sunny) and the cheers from the soldiers as we ran through the base were a welcome boost. Surprisingly, I didn't think I'd crave a beer at the end, but the Killian's tasted great! After the race, my wife and I stopped at Chincoteague Island to see the ponies. I highly recommend this as a side-trip as the area is simply beautiful and peaceful.

W0o0o0o0!!!! PR COURSE!!!

FANTASIC RACE!!! Small enough so you can move without congestion... but big enough so you are not running alone! I stayed at the host hotel. The Cavalier. Perfect hotel for walking out to the start with 10 minutes to spare. No standing out in the cold. Fun course!! We ran through a military base and there were hundreds of army men and women cheering for us!! It was wonderful. There were some complaints about wind... but not enough to slow you down that much. This is a PR course!! Nice finish on the boardwalk. Take your shoes off and walk in the sand after the marathon!!! HEAVEN!!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS RACE!!! I had a great time!! Nice tech shirt and finisher's hat too! :)

FAST!!!!!

This race rules!!! I ran the marathon in 2001 and really loved it. This time I ran the new half marathon and will sign up for next year's as soon as it goes online. The course is faster then fast, the amenities and the expo were incredible. It just doesn't get any better. I read someone complained about the weather, but come on, it's March on the ocean, what do you expect? The improvement/change in the marathon course also makes that faster as if it wasn't already fast. My thanks to the new race directors.

Not as good as 2003

The wind was wicked - tough to go over 10 miles into a wind in the high teens. There seems to be less support than there was in 2003; the water stations were disappointing and there was very little fan support. Having a post-race party in loose sand is pretty tough on the participants. Seems that the food was less than previously as well.

Nice marathon

I'll keep this short and sweet. Not my favorite marathon, but overall a good experience. Wind was brutal, but hey, not their fault. Course was scenic. Aid stations were adequate. Expo/pick-up went well. Very nice touch - giving out a finisher hat! Post-race was pretty good, but no Gatorade? Beer just doesn't quench my thirst, nor does it rehydrate me like Gatorade. One of my biggest complaints is not getting any response from my emails. (Shirts were 2 sizes too small, and I wanted to exchange.) There weren't any shirts there on race-day, so I was told to email for this info. Hello, if you tell me to email you, how about responding? All in all, though, a good race. I'll just give my large shirt to my 11 year-old cousin. Maybe it'll fit her?

Great race but beware of the timing chip

What a pleasant weekend to run in VA Beach in the off-season! Was easy to navigate around town, get into restaurants, and you can't beat the off-season hotel rates (stay at the finish line hotel - you'll thank yourself later). Course was fun, flat, and fast. The Boardwalk running between miles 11-12 and the finish wasn't as bad as I heard. The high winds made for good pack running, which made up for the little crowd support there was. Only caution I have is the timing chip. It's on an ankle bracelet and if you wear no-show socks, it just takes the skin off your Achilles. I took mine off after 6 miles and ran with it on my wrist, then dropping my arm down close to the ground as I passed the timing checkpoints. Overall a fantastic, well-run marathon. Expo was good, course was well marked and maintained, and the pacers were good support throughout. Congratulations on a successful event!

Well Run, Mostly Flat Course, Free Beer

This is a great marathon for anyone who enjoys a well run race, ocean views, flat road and lots of beer! This year the sky was blue with plenty of sun; unfortunately the wind showed up and and the morning temperature was in the upper 30's. Getting warm during the race proved to be pretty easy and plenty of fluid stops kept me well hydrated. Since the course essentially makes two loops, the wind proved to be a factor for many runners. Since I'm a mid-packer I heard a lot of people comment on their fatigue... especially after the 20 mile-mark. Fortunately, the lighthouses, military, and Boy Scouts helped motivate us to get the job done. And let's not forget the beer stops at miles 16/23 and the Killian's waiting for us at the finish! This marathon is definitely worth doing!

A very good mid-size marathon

The folks who put on the 2006 Shamrock Marathon did a wonderful job. A mid-sized expo had everything you would need. Although there was no "special" pasta feed, there are more than enough restaurants to choose from. Shamrock offers plenty of aid stations, a well marked and senic course, plenty of port-a-potties at the start and on the course, and a well-stocked finishing area. The technical running shirt and the medal are very nice and the finisher's hat was an unexpected perk. My only concern is the common finish route for the half and full marathons. The leading marathon runners had to weave through and around half-marathoners for the last several miles. This was a problem since the lane was not very wide. I am hoping that they either have 2 separate lanes or that the races finish from from opposite directions in 2007.

Great Race, New PR

Race was well organized, flat, and fun! Temps were in the 30's and 40's, so I didn't worry about overheating. Set a personal record in the marathon (my fifth overall). The Misspelled Medal (Virgina Beach) is a hoot. Not many spectators, perhaps because of the cold. Most spectators were family or military. Great job with water breaks and port-a-potties. An excellent race overall.

Wind a big factor

This was my third year running this race. I love the organization and feel of this race. It has all of the amenities of a big-city marathon, including a technical T-shirt and running hat, but also a small-town feel as it's a very laidback affair. The new course seemed faster than before, but the wind also had a bigger effect than before. At times it was a real struggle. The wind was at our backs for the first six miles, and then in our faces for the next ten. Fighting the breeze wore me out so much I didn't have anything left with which to take advantage of the tailwind for the last seven. Best advice for next year: train in a wind tunnel.

Shamrock - perfect in all respects!!

This was my fifth marathon (started last year with the Flying Pig) and so I am hardly an expert on the subject. But I know that I enjoy marathons that give a lot back to the average runner instead of using the entry fees to offer large purses to attract the elite professional runners. So when a nursing student won the women's division, earning a prize of $1,000 (along with $150 for an Olympic qualifying time), I felt that the Shamrock's organizers had amateur athletics in mind. They provided a decent medal, a long-sleeved technical shirt (not as good as Columbus, but OK), and a neat running hat for finishing. And plenty of Killian's beer for those so inclined. I thought that the large tents on the beach gave runners a chance to fraternize, eat, and drink beer, while protected by the stiff ocean breeze. The size of the Shamrock was about right for me: 1,700 finishers. Not too small and not too large. I was lucky enough to find a good running mate (thanks, Lynette!) who paced me to my best ever time of 3:56. The favoring wind over the last six miles also helped. Some complained about the chilly start (38 degrees with wind chills of 27) but I found this temperature to be delightful for running 26 miles. We found a nice pack to run behind - some tall lads who were perfect barriers; so wind in the face wasn't much of a problem. The expo was large enough to be entertaining and gave me the opportunity to find some glow-in-the-dark tangerine shorts that prompted some cheering at the finish line. The course was different this year and took us through Navy and Marine barracks where soldiers, sailors, and their wives gave runners high-fives and plenty of encouragement. Going over the bridge in the first half of the marathon was easy and scenic, as well - with a great view of a marina. Although miles 15-18 were slightly uphill - my running partner told me they were flat - they took us through a pine forest that added variety. The last five miles were along the ocean (hidden by dunes and trees mostly), past tall lighthouses, and along the streets of Virginia Beach, which are numbered so that you know how many you have left before reaching the finish. They became longer at the end. The only drawback was having to walk a hundred yards or so to get down to the tents and port-o-lets after the finish. Might be nice to open the ramp nearest the finish line next year. We stayed at the Ramada at 31st Street, an older hotel that showed its age. However it was extremely runner friendly, only a block from the finish. Easy parking, early complementary breakfast, and a late check-out at 1:30. Wonderful. In my opinion, the Shamrock is a perfect marathon. I hope to return someday.

Would recommend this race

A nice course, mostly flat. Friendly and enthusiastic supporters. Really fun post-race party. Beware the wind though; it was blowing in my face for quite a bit of the way. Small hiccups include mis-spelling in the medal and some complaints about t-shirt sizes. Otherwise, organization was top-notch and definitely an easy and enjoyable first race.

Terrific Marathon Weekend

Great event in Virginia Beach. I really enjoyed the course, good mix of scenery and terrain. Running through a couple of military bases cuts down on spectators, but spectators aren't a big draw for me in choosing a marathon. Field was ideal size, around 2,000. Expo was good without being oversized, very easy and organized number pickup. A wealth of hotels to choose from at off-season rates; I stayed right at the start and was only 8 blocks from the finish. Great runner goodies, nice looking long-sleeve technical shirt, fantastic medal and a very nice running "finisher's" hat given out at the end. It was a cool and windy day but what can you do about weather on the coast in March? The finish-line party was one of the best I have seen. Lots of post-race Killian's Red beer was flowing, hot steaming bowls of Irish stew which was much appreciated on this chilly day, plus massages and the usual supply of bagels, fruit, cookies, water etc. I will definitely be back at this race in the future.

Fun Marathon!

I loved the course! The variety kept things interesting. We started out on Atlantic Avenue, did a little "run about town," then headed out to Fort Templeton, passing the aquarium and crossing a concrete bridge. Seeing the barracks gave me lots of thought about those who are serving our country. The woods were beautiful! Then back across the bridge, back through town (cheering family on the hotel balcony), and another loop up north of town around Fort Story and the Cape Henry lighthouse. Great finish line on the concrete boardwalk, and post-race celebration the beach. The beer post-race was GREAT, but the awards ceremony was disappointing (started 15 minutes late, didn't present age-group awards). There were parts of the race with few spectators, but that was great for meditating. The loops in and out of town were wonderful for waving to family. This is my 12th marathon, and I would highly recommend it! Be prepared for potentially COLD weather at the start (wind chill factor in the 20's), but beautiful, sunny low 50's at the finish. What's not to like about Virginia Beach?

Course Highs & Lows

Shamrock is a flat, fast marathon. The size of the field makes it a great option for those wanting to run without bobbing and weaving. For first-timers, the lack of crowd support or entertainment can be tough if you are running solo. The course weaves around some nice spots, and finishes on the Virginia Beach Boardwalk, which, while scenic, is hard on the legs! The 2005 marathon failed to provide the level of support seen in previous years -- fluid stations without Gatorade and confusion nearing the finish line area. If you are a middle-to-back-of-the-packer, you may find yourself fending for yourself. Security issues in Fort Story prevented spectators from a majority of the race which was disappointing for runners and family/friends. Overall, a good marathon with an established reputation that could be easily improved with more attention to course logistics.

Think about the slower folks!

Having run both giant (20,000 +) and smaller (-4,000) marathons, I have to say I prefer the smaller ones! I liked the course. It was very scenic, and the weather this year was awesome. We also got a great rate at the hotel because it is still technically the off-season. I would like to comment on the course security. The course is open for 6.5 hours and I came in at 6 hours. There were people walking all over the boardwalk, oblivious to the fact that runners were finishing a marathon. There was no clear way to get to the finish for 2 miles. No course marshals were present, no cones or markers set up to provide a path for the runners. I had to tell people to move! At this point there was no course security. This is a real issue. When I finished, the organizers were packing up the after-party. There was no food or beer left. If you are going to keep a course open for 6.5 hours, do it right by providing the slower finishers with the support they deserve and a clear path to the finish. There were 150 people that came in after me. I know that having to dodge random people on the boardwalk really put a damper on the way I felt when I finished.

Great Boston Qualifier

The race is well organized, great start and finish, and very fast. Small marathons never have the crowd support of the big ones, so I knew what to expect. The website was excellent, one of the best marathon sites I have seen. The medal and Coolmax long-sleeve shirt are great. Overall, excellent marathon and I qualified for Boston!

Good, flat marathon

This was my first marathon. I choose this one because it was flat. This isn't a big marathon, but well organized. Not a lot of crowd support, but a flat course was more important to me. The weather was perfect...we got lucky. The expo was small but ok. The pasta dinner was good but overpriced. Nice medals and neat Coolmax running tops instead of t-shirts. I would recommend this race.

Great Marathon

I thought this marathon was excellent. The only reason I gave the course 4 stars and not 5 was the concrete boardwalk, but I think the view of the ocean was worth the short time on the boardwalk. Loved that the start/finish was near each other and conveniently near lots of hotels. The organization was perfect, and the expo was larger than I expected. I thought that having the expo go so late on Friday night gave plenty of time for those coming in from out of town to pick up their packets the night before. Volunteers are EXCELLENT. I loved the themed water stops and enthusiastic volunteers. They must have had fun. Finish was great. Loved the announcer calling off everyone's name. Especially the beer tent. The after party was a blast. Food was good, band was great. Belly dancers were a great addition. But, free beer and you have to pay for the water? Interesting... Quite honestly, I wouldn't change a thing. This one was definitely worth it!

Thanks Shamrock Marathon!

This was my first marathon and the experience was great. A lot of it was due to the weather, which, of course, Shamrock has no control over. Weather was perfect. Little to no breeze. Scenic and flat course. Enthusiastic spectators while sometimes sparce. Water stops were nicely placed. Thanks to Boy Scout Troop #1 around mile 17 for the support and water/Gatorade! Mile markers clearly placed. Great ending along the boardwalk. Thanks Virginia Beach!

A blast for a beginner

This was my first marathon at the age of 24 and, believe me, I haven't had more fun then that in a LONG time. The course was great and flat. The run along the boardwalk at the end was perfect. Some say it hurt their feet, but mine were in pain well before that so I didn't really notice a difference. The few fans who showed up were great. Including some at the 2nd mile marker giving out free beer. I shouted, "It's 7:45am! Who drinks beer at this hour?!" The only part of the course I didn't care for was the run through the fort. We kept doubling back on ourselves and it felt like this is where the marathon was just eating up those miles it couldn't fit anywhere else. The post-race food was plentiful and free beers as well. Sitting down on a beach after a marathon with some fruit and a beer or two is quite a treat. Its a great place to become that marathoner you always knew you were. Run this race!

Smallish race with a laid back post-race

All in all, I had fun a lot of fun at this race and would run it again. It had a nice expo (especially good for a marathon this small), flat/reasonably fast course, good spectator turnout given the marathon's size, and a very enjoyable post-race. My favorite memory from the race weekend was lying on the sand after finishing, talking with some other runners, and relaxing with a free beer or two. Given the unpredictability of Virginia Beach's weather, we got really lucky on the weather and had a perfect day for running (mid 40's->mid 50's by race end and NO WIND). My only complaint about the race was the size of the drink cups at the water stops. For some reason, the race used smallish Dixie cups instead of the usual twelve ounce cups. While that may sound trivial, it meant that you had to drink twice as many cups of fluid in order to remain hydrated. Maybe the RD figured on that because it seemed like there twice as many water stops (one every mile or so -vs- one every 2.5 miles) as the other marathons I've run, so I guess it ended up as a wash.

Nice Marathon

This is my 2nd time running this event, and I preferred this course over last year's. Starting at 30th street, and ending on 31st (on the broadwalk) were key points in having a good start and a strong finish. I can't speak for other runners but mentally the start point help me prepare for a comfortable start, and the home stretch on the broadwalk help me finished strong. I had a great time, and would recommend this race to other runners looking for good race in March. Also, the weather was great! See you next year.

Very nice experience

The weather was cool and brisk at the start and soon warmed up, and there was low humidity. The course is flat (except for a 50-foot hill at mile 18) and has good views of the Atlantic Ocean and Chesepeake Bay, finishing on the boardwalk. The crowds were modest but enthusiastic. The course was well-marked and organized.

Fun, fast, and very worthwhile

Shamrock was my first 'small' marathon and I found it to be a very well-organized and friendly. The course is very flat, fast, and overall, very pleasant. Great crowd support, especially for a smaller race. The best parts of the course, in my opinion, are the two stretches on the boardwalk: it's invigorating during the first few miles and on the way back in, the view is a pleasant distraction from whatever discomfort you're feeling. A weekend on the beach + a nice course + free post-race beer = a great spring marathon.

Great marathon overall

I would highly recommend this marathon. It was flat, scenic, well run and the weather was good to boot. I am not a big eater after a marathon, so I did not notice a problem. A bagel and a banana were all I could stomach (although I did manage to get down a beer or two). Staying at the host hotel was wonderful. The start/finish line were right outside the front door. And the post-race party on Saturday night was the best I have ever attended.

Enjoyable spring marathon

This was my 10th marathon. The Shamrock Sportsfest Marathon is one to add to your list of 'to do' marathons. Perfect number of participants in my book. We stayed at the Double Tree Hotel next to the start/finish line. Good accommodations and very convenient. The course is an out and back. Personally I didn't care for running miles and miles on the concrete boardwalk but what marathon course doesn't have some spots on it that are less than desirable. The course and water stop volunteers did a terrific job in my book. Very enthusiastic and worked real hard to make it a fun day. My only suggestion for improvement would be to make the mile markers larger or tie a balloon to them. They were real small and I missed a couple. Many had fallen over due to the wind and some were just simply not placed were they could be seen by anyone. The post-race food was a let down. There really wasn't any except for some bananas. They did have post-race beer which is always welcome. There's nothing like an ice cold beer or Coke after a marathon.

Cement boardwalk miles pretty...then not much

Organization was terrific (but please, a finishing bagel). Va. Beach pleasant enough hotel-strip beach town, wonderful beach, nice range of hotels and restaurants. Saturday choice a great one...Sunday to recover. Modest number of runners a comfortable experience. The course isn't that special, outside of the 5 miles or so on the boardwalk on the beach. That part is fun. The rest is a non-descript residential street, a pleasant but ordinary parkway section, a disappointingly dull army base with no water views (the map implied a much prettier section here)...and then almost an identical run to return to the start. So, not a very interesting course, but a pleasant run if one lives near enough. Spectators sparse, but friendly and supportive. (For ALL marathons: Wish we could get all volunteers at water stops to wear gloves and keep fingers out of the drinking water). Best part: run on a Saturday, giving time to visit great beaches and recover on Sunday.

Overall very well run and well organized!

Beautiful course along the boardwalk. The drawbacks on the boardwalk were wind (miserable) and running on concrete (especially the last few miles of the race). Water stops were good with friendly volunteers. Really appreciated the GUMMI BEARS! The discussion board was great! Tended to generate enthusiasm among runners and was very helpful when it came to answering 'dumb' questions from an out-of-stater like myself. Overall a good experience and one worth repeating. A good marathon for a first-timer.

Exceeded expectations even with a few glitches

Lots of accolades: good organization, excellent co-located start (wide) and finish (I liked the U-shaped finish though others didn't, and it was good for spectators as well as allowing you to step inside immediately to get warm), extremely helpful discussion board, reliable water/Gatorade stops with port-a-johns, flat course with nice mix of scenery (I liked it though some people complained about it being mentally tough, as if other marathons are easy), nice size (<2,000), attractive medals and T-shirts, and great value for a nearby hotel room (it's the off season). I also liked being able to pick up my number/chip on race day morning. That's mandatory for a Saturday race (which I love, by the way). And it's a good race for the family: they can see you three times and still have plenty of time to play. But the organizers desperately need to fix the mile marker problem. I can live with the chance of wind (it's the eastern shore in March!), the crown in the road (I didn't even notice), and the sparse food at the finish (oddly deficient, though I got bananas, oranges, a bagel, and water). But I missed 8 markers, more than in my previous 18 marathons combined. And that doesn't count the 18th which was about 1/4 mile early. The #s were on cute little green shamrocks often placed on chairs that were hard to see, easily hidden behind spectators, or just plain not there. Add to this the spurious on-course clocks which were facing the runners at odd points on the way back (at mile markers on the outbound course, I assume?), and you sometimes had little idea of pace, especially over the last 6 critical miles. I've never experienced this before. Fixing it doesn't take more money (hey, organizers who make a profit are more likely to keep hosting the race) so much as more care. This would be a deal breaker for me in considering a repeat run. On balance, I'd love to make this an annual thing since I have family in VA. But I would need to know the mile marker situation will improve...substantially.

A well oiled machine

I have run 35 marathons in 19 different states and as I said about the New Mexico Marathon, I never want to put a race down. I can honestly say that this was a pleasant surprise. It was a very well run event with everything necessary for a marathon event. The course was well thought out, the expo, although small, was sufficient for the size of the event, the organization well run, the volunters wonderful, and the race support adequate for the event. As with every race there are always things that you can criticize no matter the size or nature of the event. However you must look at the race based upon its size, and if it gives you everything which it promised when you signed up. Looking at this event from that prospective it was eveything which was promised. No race can control the weather so you can't blame the wind on the organizers. The course gave you a nice feel for the beach front. The part of the course through the fort was a bit boring, the cement boardwalk was an unpleasant surprise (where I come from a boardwalk is made of wooden boards, hence the name), but the course was well marked, well conceived, and had proper security and enough support. I was very happy with the event and would recommend it to anyone looking to run in Virginia.

Fast course, good scenery, good support

I really liked this race and would do it again. I liked the variety of the course: a few miles on the boardwalk, a few miles in a residential section (my least favorite part), a few miles through the woods (my favorite part, smell of pine needles and shaded), a few miles around and back in Ft. Story and then turn around and repeat the whole thing on the way back. I always had a change of course to look forward and this helped me to mentally break up the race. I enjoyed the out and back, as I got to see the top runners and some of my faster and slower friends along the course throughout the morning. I’m not sure why some runners complain about the course being boring; it wasn’t to me, but I’m guessing that these may be runners who prefer the bigger marathons packed with cheering fans from start to finish. Well, Shamrock isn’t that, but it is a respectable size and there were plenty of folks out to cheer, entertainment from the differently themed water stops and deejays blasting out tunes along the way. (Thanks for the “Chariots of Fire” at the turnaround.) Volunteers and water stops were excellent. I carried my own gels so I can’t comment on those. The weather was good to us this year: sunny and in the 40s. The wind as we headed back south on the boardwalk from miles 22-25 or so was tough, but if marathons were easy, then anyone could do them, right? Some other nice pluses: the start and finish at the Pavilion Convention Center allow runners to wait in a warm place before and after the race and provide last-minute opportunities to pick up that Body Glide or the gels that you may have forgotten at home. The not-so-good: runners have to contend with a couple of miles on a cambered road, but if you can keep to the center of the road, it’s not too bad. It was a good day at Shamrock and my only nit-picks are paltry food offerings for finishers (only bananas and oranges left when I finished in 4:12) and the lack of Mylar blankets.

My 1st Shamrock Marathon

This was my 1st running of the Shamrock, and I had a great time. The course was great - flat, but there was a small incline for a couple of miles, but nothing to difficult to run up on. The weather was great. Crowd support was small, but those who can out to support were great. The expo was small, but still nice. It was great staying at a hotel that was in walking distance to the start/finish line. I have only one suggestion: a little more range of munchies for after the race. And, I have one complaint, but nothing to bad: Should either include a 'patch' that represents the marathon race inside the goodie bag, or able to purchase one. This is the 1st marathon race that I have run that a 'patch' was not being offered. Although, not a big issue, a lot runners collect patches of race they have ran in so that they can proudly display on their favorite jacket. Anyway, this may be something to consider for future races. Overall, I had a great time/great weekend, and I will be back for future Shamrock runs. The VA Beach community is one of the friendliest communities that I have been in. Keep up the good work.

Very good marathon - well done

Perhaps I could speak for the few of us Canadians who participated at the Sportsfest that the organizers should be congratulated for putting together a great sporting event, including the marathon that I ran. The efforts of the volunteers were much appreciated - they did an excellent job. Some of the criticisms I read from others are understandable. As for me, I have no complaints whatsoever. I was so focused in staying with my pace group that I didn't realize any of the banking on the road. Although the stretch through Fort Story was a bit long, running through the wooded area along Shore Drive was very pleasant. After this stretch and mile 20, the experience for me was not so pleasant as my legs started to tighten up and hurt. Maybe the banking of the road surface was a contributing factor and I just didn't notice it, but I blame it mainly on my lack of conditioning. I did see quite a bit of food at the finish, including bagels, bananas and oranges, but they didn't last long afterwards. Personally, I can't eat much right after running a marathon, so I only had a couple of orange slices and a banana. I guess the trick for the orgnaizers next time is to allocate the food better to save some for the runners who finish later. Overall, a good course and great organization. And THANK YOU to all the volunteers!!!!

An enjoyable experience from start to finish.

I thought the race was very well organized. The course is as flat as a pancake. I loved having the start and finish at the same place. It was awesome to just walk across the parking lot from my hotel to the start. You can tell this is a small race, which is not a problem, but the expo isn't much and the finish area is a little sparse. My only real criticism is the mile markers, especially mile one, I totally missed it, they could be a little more visible. At some races they have someone standing out at mile one calling off split times which is very helpful in trying to settle into your pace. Overall I think the Frosticks put on a marvelous race. My congratulations to them for a successful race.

A Great Time!

What a pleasant surprise! This marathon has it all: 1,800+ runners, a well organized expo, miles and miles along the ocean, more miles on a scenic wooded parkway, a flat course, and beer at the finish. What more can you ask for?

Good Race- Needs some tweaks

A Plus: 1. Nice flat course conducive for PR 2. Scenic course that runs along entire boardwalk (concrete)for 3 miles 3. Organization for race is good (see comments below) 4.Can find decent hotels- stayed at a Courtyard Marriott- ocean view- 2 rm suite for the price of a reg. room at a lot of other races (offseason) 5. Nice finish area- great fans along the way 6. Nice shirt and medal. I heard complaints about shirts in the past, but I liked it. Small thing Cons: 1. Wind was tough- I heard up to 25 mph. Can't change mother nature but makes a PR a lot tougher. 2. Miles 11-18 in Fort Story are incredible boring and mentally tough- not to mention the severe slope in the road (felt like a banked turn on an indoor track) Also, it was not fun competing with cars and trucks for the 2 lanes available out and back in the fort. It would be great if this part of the course could at least be shortened- possibly find a loop through residential area?? - some of them looked beautiful 3. Fan support was great, but it does get real quiet out there on the North side of course. 4. Now about the food- after many years of reading others complain, this has not been addressed. I finished in a decent time and the only things available were orange wedges and bananas. If there was something else besides beer, it was gone fast. This is a joke. If it is a financial thing, then the organizers should up the entry fee $3-5 and give the runners what they need after 26.2 miles- bagels, yogurt, cereal- anything. This is without the doubt the worst post-race spread I've seen. There is better and more food at a 5K fun run. I was thinking about going to the post-race party but it was clear to me after this seeing this spread that it would be better to hit the town- and it was!! All in all, I would run again because it is in Va Bch, easy to get to, and a fun place to be- just BYOF

Excellent middle size race

State # 17, #22 Ultra/ Marathon Let me start with the downsides: Pre race dinner $20, too much Mile makers off at times leaving Ft. Story. Some H20 stops not well organized people only holding 1 cup, if running in pack they ran out and you had too wait or grab your own, seems critical, however other stops were works of art. Post race food very limited need more selection of fruits add cookies yogurt powerbars etc... Good points: Pre-race expo had everything you needed. Flat out and back course some along the beach, quick course, however wind my slow you down. Great website and dicussion board was very neat. Excellent long shelve t-sirt and nice medal. Race Directors and their teams did a very good job. Lots of port of johns Overall very good job GRADE: B+/A-

Fast, flat, fun, festive... Thumbs up!

For my 4th marathon, I was looking for a new race for me that would be flat, fun, festive and have a large enough field to draw some good fan support. This race was an excellent choice. I truly had a fun time. The spectator support was very strong, and the organization was great. Local police were everywhere to ensure traffic was detoured properly -- they shut down major roads in the VA Beach area. The DJ's blaring music at several points were a boost. Water breaks were plentiful. I'll delicately say that I was overcome with the need to take an unplanned restroom visit, and the organizers saved me by providing johns at every water stop. Pre-race expo was well organized, and you could buy all the overpriced running gear that your little heart desires. The course itself is virtually flat, which was a welcome change of pace for me. Only downside is that it is of the 'out and back' variety. Course was a bit desolate at miles 8-11 (and 18-22, since it is the same stretch), as it essentially is on a closed divided highway, but most other streches were well-supported. Headwind along the shoreline was brutal at miles 23-25, but it was the one course element that really brought challenge to the race. Sun and temps mostly in the 40's to low 50's throughout the morning made for great conditions. Post-race party at cost of $10 for all was a really nice touch, considering Bud was free-flowing and a good band was playing great live tunes. Oh yeah, T-Shirts are nice, too. Overall, I strongly recommend this race for the runner looking to achieve a PR (I did, even with a john stop!) and to let loose and have some fun. I drove 800 miles roundtrip and it was worth it. Thumbs up for the Shamrock.

Well organized but not well supported.

This was my second marathon. First of all, Kudos to the organizers. Too bad the City of VA Beach does not support this event better. I was looking for a PR and got it. However, I found the course incredibly boring. Total lack of spectators for miles at a time and really tough headwinds in the last 5 miles. The organization was first rate. Registration was easy, decent expo and it started right on time.

Great Race!

This was my second marathon and I was a little worried about running a small one Disney being my first. The weather was perfect with barely any wind. Just as the other comments, volunteers were wonderful! They really made the whole event exciting. The runners were freindly, I met a few people along the way. I actually crossed the finish line with a smile still on my face. The shirt, well could have been better. I will save this to only wear to the gym (although I have seen a few people in my home town with the shirt on). I will definitely run this race again. Much more exciting than Disney, if you can believe that!

Great Race!

This was a great race. The weather was perfect. The volunteers at the aid station were very helpfull and friendly. The course was nice. Being able to pick up your packet on race day is a lifesaver. The runners were great also. I talked to some very nice people on the journey to the finish line. The medal was very colorfull and nice. Good job to everyone. I will run this one again.

good race for PR

Very well organized with enthusiastic volunteers. Yeah, the shirt wasn't great, but it's not like I needed another one, so I don't really mind. Couldn't have asked for better weather, either and the course was flat and FAST. I'd like to do this one again next year.

PR course; Good aid stations

This marathon was not my first choice but I was not disappointed with it, either. It was my third marathon and the first time I broke four hours. Other than shopping, there was nothing else to see or do at the expo. The long-sleeved T-shirt was pretty busy with gaudy graphics and numerous sponsors, not something I will wear often (straight to the t-shirt quilt?). You have to find your own carbo-loading dinner. I found 'The Italian Cafe' at 1630 General Boothe Blvd., about five miles away. Good pasta and nice atmosphere for under $10. I shared a hotel room at the Doubletree for $70 apiece and only a hundred yards from the start and finish. You won’t find a closer hotel. The weather was friendly, high 30s F at the start and about 50 F at noon. Breezy and very sunny at times. There were some spectators and a few DJ’s making some amusing chatter. The run through Fort Story (10-18 miles) was kind of dull, though. My favorite section was from 8-10 & 18-20 miles, out of the sun and off the city streets. It was a quiet, shaded, wooded section many runners used for a potty stop, which brings me to my next point. I think there should be more port-a-johns on the course. There were plenty of well-placed aid stations and the volunteers were well coached. The last two hundred yards of the finish were exciting. The variety of after race refreshments was pretty sparse. If you are looking for rock band, sidewalks full of spectators, dazzling scenery, smorgasbords, or hand holding, you probably will not like this race. But if you want a safe, fast course with good aid stations, this is a great race for you to set a personal record or qualify for Boston. Also, the accompanying 8K is highly competitive.

Excellent marathoning experience

The warm weather caught me off guard, especially since I did almost all of my long runs in sub-20 degree weather, but the experience at Shamrock far outweighed my problems coping with the heat. The course was remarkably fast, especially in the first half, which may lull one into starting out a bit harder than one should. Also, beware of miles 11-14 where the wind is in your face, and 21-25 where the streets are numbered - which tempts you to count down your pain in the latter moments of the race. The volunteers were numerous and enthusiatic. They really made this race quite enjoyable. The aid stations were well-stocked with water, Gatorade, bananas, oranges, pretzels, gu, and even porta-potties. They made the food at the finish look paltry by comparison. Besides the volunteers, a lot of spectators turned out in pockets along the course from 0-8 and 21-25, but not much more than that. The T-shirt for the marathon paled in comparison to that of the accompanying 8K, but the finishers medal was a handpainted shamrock. Really nice. This is definitely one I'll do again. Amy and Jerry Frostick really know how to put on a good marathon.

Awesome

I came to Shamrock Marathon as my first and only marathon. I trained in New Jersey and never thought I could complete this distance. Yea it was hot from anyone who has dealed with cold and wet all winter it was welcomed especially for my friends and family who attended to cheer me on. The big things runners should be concerned about is that there was plenty of water and support on the course. I will always remember this race. Thanks for your support Shamrock!!!

Can you believe it was this HOT in March??

This was my second marathon and first opportunity to run my 'home' course. Having run several previous Shamrock 8K races (same day), I knew the weather would be a huge factor but I (nor anybody else for that matter) wasn't prepared for the heat. Just miserable! Agree with other commentators that the organization was excellent. I also agree with those regarding the course - the stretch through Ft. Story needs to be reconfigured. We really do have many options for a race route. Why not run through First Landing (Seashore) State Park? Or follow some of the same route down General Booth Blvd. that the RnR Half-Marathon did? I also agree to previous comments regarding finish-line management, need better post-race food and keep things set-up longer. The heat prolonged everyone's race - too many people were greeted only by the clock. Not sure I would attempt again without having an idea about the weather or unless they changed the course. The fans that could provide support along the route were superb!

HOT! HOT! HOT! HOT!

VERY Unexpectedly Hot! This was my 8th Marathon and the toughest race I have ever experienced. Very difficult to rate the spectators' support and the organization after having done Nashville, Disney, San Deigo and Chicago Marathons. The run along the ocean front was pretty cool! I am glad I did this race, but probably would not do it again. Due to heat we were quite a bit slower than we expected and I felt they were breaking down too soon with too many runners still out there on the course! Matter-of-fact, I have never seen a race break down this quickly! Everyone seemed like in a hurry to go home!

Tough day; but a good race

I enjoyed the race, although it was extremely hot. The course is a little monotonous at times; but the runners and spectators were great. I have to agree about the post race food. Even some bagels would have been nice. I really hate bananas now. I wish I had at least remembered my certificate. I left and it was only on my way home that I rememebered they had them at the finish. Oh well. That didn't spoil a good race for me. I'll more than likely run it next year, hopefully it'll be about 20 degrees cooler.

Finisher's certificate spoiled an enjoyable race.

This was my 54th marathon or ultra and my 26th state. Most aspects of the race were excellent (volunteers, aid stations, T-shirt, traffic control, mile markers, photographers, lodging, etc.), but unfortunately the main thing that I will remember is the poor job that was done in supplying an official finisher's certificate. The race Web page said, 'Your entry fee includes, . . . [a] parchment certificate to all marathon finishers presented at the finish line'. I hoped that this would mean that the computer scoring system was automatically generating official finishers' certificates. I imagined that I would tell a volunteer my bib number, and they would then hand me my freshly printed official certificate. Instead, I found a group of volunteers filling out certificates by hand. They did not even know my time. Since I could not remember it exactly either, they gave me a blank certificate to fill in myself. This lack of attention to a very important detail, left me dissatisfied with an otherwise well organized event. The post-race food left something to be desired as well. I realize that Budweiser was one of the major sponsors, but beer and fruit is not much of a recovery meal. I would have enjoyed some real food (pasta, chicken, bagels, yogurt, etc.). Many other races do much better. Although these may appear to be minor complaints, when one spends a great deal of money to travel to an out-of-state marathon, they expect everything to be perfect.

HOT

Being from VA, an 85 degree day in March is a rarity and definitely was unwelcome on the day of my first marathon! Other than that, the course along the ocean was very nice, but only gave it 3*'s due to a v. boring strech from miles 8-21.5 on a road with nothing to look at and then in a military base. The spectators were absolutely great, but they weren't allowed in the military base for about 10 miles which made the race seem longer. The organization, though, was fantastic and all the volunteers couldn't be friendlier!

That was the toughest race I have ever experienced. Unexpectedly Hot! Very difficult to rate the spectators' support and the organization after having done Chicago marathon. Great run.

2002 race was hot! Race was well organized with plenty of fruit, gatorade and water provided by very helpful volunteers. Course was very well marked, and had good law enforcement support. Good medical support at the end. Getting a $5 after-race massage was the best! Staff broke down the finish line entirely too soon. Very hot and tired racers with a time of 5 hours plus came into a very sad finish line with the balloon arch and reception crew already gone, and only the clock left running.

Well organized and fast

After missing my qualifying time by 3 min at Disney in Jan of 2001, I came right back and entered the Shamrock, I was determined to make Boston in 2002. I found this to be well organized, fun, on a lightning fast course. We lucked out with the weather which turned out to be perfect. One day made all the difference in the world. The next day was cold and VERY windy. Running on the boardwalk and then through the city streets can be tough with a good stiff breeze. Had a great run, beat my time, and am set for Boston. Great expo prior to race, however skip the post race party after the race, and enjoy the other night life in VA beach.

Good for a PR!

I have run this marathon twice...both times, cutting many (many!) minutes off my previous PR's. Mostly this is due to a flat course and fewer runners than some marathons. If the winds are like they usually are, it can be brutal, but in 2001 it was a calm day. Lack of spectators, music, etc. make it a good marathon to run with a friend.

Always running on a slope

The main problem I have with this course is that you are always running with a slope to the left or right. Most of the time, the runners are confined to one lane of a road, so it is sloping toward the curb. The stretches where there were two lanes(7 to 11 and 18 to 21), the entire road sloped one way or the other. By the time I was done, my ITs and outer quad muscles were trashed. For this reason, I would not do this course again.

Middle of the Road

The course is fast and flat, but except for two enjoyable oceanfront stretches on the boardwalk, it's fairly boring. The race is well-organized overall, but annoyingly, some stations late in the race had water but no gatorade. And no Chip timing?! The fans that were out there were great -- really supportive -- but there ain't a whole lot of 'em. All in all, a decent 'small' marathon that I'm glad I did, but not sure I'd do again.

Awesome flat course

The course is flat as can be. It is very well organized with a great expo the day before. There were numerous water stations along the way, however nowhere on the course did anyone have any vaseline. Fans were great and made the race much more enjoyable. Although there was a stretch from mile 16 to mile 21 that felt long because of lack of fans. I believe that it was inaccessible due to the fact that the course was run through an army base.

A great course for a first-time marathoner!

The weather cooperated wonderfully -- sunshine and cool. This was my first marathon (age 51, post-heart attack). Its a nice, flat course. There is one incline between mile markers 8 and 12 or so, but only of one or two degrees. Living in northwestern Pennsylvania where we have lots of snow and ice all winter, I had to do most of my training indoors -- but did not feel disadvantaged. I finished under four hours, which was the goal I'd trained for. The support for this race was outstanding, the spectators enthusiastic. I'll be back next year!

Delightful beach festival

The race itself is excellent, always tidewater flat, starting at the town's mammoth expo center, looping street-side and (concrete) boardwalk-side of the hotels, heading 60 blocks or so out of town, foraying deep into the Army's Ft. Story, then retracing all but the hotel loop back to a dramatic finish inside the expo center. There are hundreds of townsfolk cheering along the way. This year, the start was cool but the finish was sunny and warm. The only downer was that the water stations ran out of Gatorade and energy food by midcourse, leaving only water for the last 13.1 miles. Mercifully, the sponsor, Bud Light, had ample samples at the finish! I'll be back for this festival.

Scenic, flat, fast, occasionally windy.

This is a scenic course that passes by the oldest 'federally funded light house' in the US (dating to 1788); while it passes through the US Army Base, Fort Story. During a portion of the course you will run on the Virginia Beach Boardwalk, and along the border of a 600 acre forested park that dates to Colonial times. Typical of marathons close to the ocean, there are a few 2-3 mile sections that are 'open,' and subject to wind gusts. The 'indoor finish' (complete with red carpet and over-head clock) takes place in the VA Beach Colliseum and the applauding spectators are inspiring. After the race free beer is offered in conjunction with 'Shamrock' activities. The race also holds an excellent expo the day prior to the marathon.
