Excellent Race All Around!

Logistically this race was a breeze to get to. I flew into the Columbus airport and had a short 15 minute Uber drive to my hotel. We ended up staying at the Red Roof Inn Plus, right in downtown, and it was in a great location. It was less than a 10 minute walk to the convention center for the expo and only a 15 minute walk to the start line on race morning. The expo was pretty good given the race size (about 3,607 marathoners this year) with the usual clothing, shoes, and energy gel options. They even had a Goodwill booth set up to buy throwaway clothes for race morning. The race participant t-shirt is nothing to write home about in terms of its design, but IT'S COTTON which is frankly a win in my book. The race itself was fantastic - plenty of porta potties at the start, four different starting corrals (I never felt jostled or like I was stuck running with people who didn't belong in my corral even though it was crowded in the beginning), energetic music & even fireworks right as the starting gun went off! There were DJs and bands every few miles along the course as well. The course is relatively flat - the hills that are there are pretty gentle and long, none that really take it out of you. It runs through cute neighborhoods, around some part of The Ohio State stadiums/campus, and by nice parks. There's a couple seedy sections of town, but that's unavoidable sometimes in city marathons. The spectators were out in full force - at times I felt like I was running the Boston Marathon based on how many and how loud the spectators were. If you love crowd support, this marathon is for you! The proceeds from this race also go to the Nationwide Children's Hospital, and each mile is dedicated to a child. The children were at their dedicated mile marker with foam hands so you could give them a high five as you ran past - it was such a sweet touch. Another bonus is that you can put your name on your bib and a good potion of spectators cheered me on by name which I loved. SWAG: the medal is cute (be alert & make sure the volunteer at the finish line doesn't give you a half marathon medal in error! It happened to me and I had to go swap my medal for the correct one) and they give you a bag after you finish to get as much food/drink as you want (apples, trail mix, nuts, cheese, bagels, chips, Gatorade etc). Overall I highly recommend this race to other 50 staters! Columbus is a charming and clean little city. The October race date made for beautiful fall scenery on race day as well. (And our weather this year was absolutely perfect! 40° at the start, mid-50s a few hours later, and no precipitation or wind =L<û)

As Good As Advertised

I don't have much to add to the previous positive comments. It is an excellent race. I did want to add that between the enthusiastic MC, the dawn sky, the fireworks, and The Boss singing 'Born To Run', it was the most fired up I have ever been for the start of a marathon. Seeing the children who have been helped by Nationwide Hospital throughout the course kept me fired up. Great job Columbus! Barley Brewing Company is directly across the street from the expo and has an excellent blood orange wheat. Check it out

Great mid-size race

Anyone looking for a great fall race to travel to for a long weekend should seriously consider Columbus. Pros -Expo was downtown within walking distance of many hotels...very convenient -Great selection of race merchandise -Start and finish is downtown and easily within walking distance from hotels -Course was scenic, flat, and well-staffed. Great volunteers and local support for the race! -Bands and entertainment along the course was really good. -Best part (and most inspiring) were the children who were mile champions. Really helps keep things in perspective, and they had big smiles on their faces and were very inspiring. -Plentiful food options (both free and available for purchase) at the finish line -Columbus residents really came out to support this race -For out-of-towners there's plenty to see to occupy a long weekend. We went to an NHL hockey game, rented bikes and rode up to the Ohio State campus and explored, and also toured the state capitol building. Cons -For the earlier miles should have water tables on both sides of the street -That's really it...I struggle to come up with any other bad items. This race really is that good! This is a top-notch event and you won't be disappointed if you decide to travel for this marathon.

A Real Treat

There is a lot to love about this race with slight room for improvement. The course is flat and fast. Without any significant hills, somehow there is a nice downhill portion from miles 19-22. The uphills must have been subtle enough to make you not realize they were there. I do recall one small hill around 18, but it was minor. The spectators were the nicest I've come across in my 21 marathons. Even on a cold day (33 degrees at the start, 40 degrees by the finish) the crowds were huge. I was encouraged by name (It was typed on the bib) and by them shouting out "Pittsburgh" (The marathon participant shirt I was wearing) at least 3 dozen times. The crowds were so big that I could not even find my father in the crowd at mile 7 though he later told me he saw me. The children from the hospital were an absolute treat on the course at each mile. Visually, I didn't see a depressed part of town throughout the entire race. Neighborhoods were beautiful and the section through Ohio State Univ was great. Two improvements I would suggest are a staggered start and water stops on both sides of the road early in the race. This race is too large to let all runners go at the gun. The entire first 12.5 miles were as crowded as I've experienced. Most races clear out and you have more room to run by mile 2. With being so crowded, the water stops should be on both sides of the road during the first half. I missed the first two stops because I couldn't see over the crowd of runners and when I did it was too congested to get to the water stops on the left side. Neither are the worst thing in the world, but just a suggestion. The water stops were very organized having Gatorade first and water second at every stop. Also, they had Gu (or an equivalent) around 8 and 18. This is my third marathon in Ohio and by far my favorite of the 3. Finisher medal was nice and participant T-Shirt is excellent. Great job Columbus Marathon!

An absolute treat!

This is my first time running the Columbus Marathon and it did not disappoint. The Expo had tons of vendors and the bib pickup went very quickly (long sleeve shirts were a nice touch). On race morning parking was easy and just steps from the start/finish line. The corrals had plenty of port a potties. Fireworks at the start (how cool is that). The course was wonderful! Beautiful neighborhoods with TONS of spectators. I run a lot of trail marathons so the sight of people cheering is amazing. The best treat of all were the Patient Champions every mile that held up big foam hands you could slap and see their smiles. Mile 11 made me cry as it is called the 'Angel Mile' where the families of children who had died in the hospital were holding pictures. The spectators on the back 13 were somewhat less but still enthusiastic. After passing the Ohio State football stadium the course ran inside a corn field, several neighborhoods and finally the finish line. Nice heavy medal, chocolate milk, a few steps back to my car finished a great day. I heard it was a good race, you just have to try it.

Always impeccable organization and great support

My 7th Columbus Marathon - and slowest despite lofty goals and promising training. But the weather and my poor pre-hydration played into that. First Columbus continues to be a hidden gem, not selling out despite being consistently impeccable in organization, and offering a terrific course. The logistics of accommodations, parking, dining, getting to the start are the best of any marathon I have done or supported. This is my first time with the new start location, and it is mostly positive despite the narrower roadway, there is now a grandstand for spectators to see the start and finish. Community support was great and continuous all over the course, and there was virtually always a band or music to be heard. There were fluid stations at least every mile, but some were only on one side of the road, and during the first half where the full and half are combined, they were crowded, even before the peak of traffic. Organizers could help by setting up all stations on both sides of the road in the the first half(for the first time, I actually tripped, slipped, and fell in a water station) Out on the course it was inspirational to have the Children's Champions from Nationwide Children's Hospital. Where is there need to improve? I wish that there was a start/finish area map in the booklet/web, and if there was a family reunion area, I could not find it. Organizers have no control over the weather, and a start in the high 60's, is not ideal, but the spring and fall marathons I did this year both offered unseasonably hot conditions, and perhaps organizers should consider pushing fall races out a week to compensate. I ran this race for the first time in 2002, and it continues to improve in subtle ways, despite being a true benchmark for medium sized races. Run Columbus, you will not be disappointed.

Incredible race! Superb organization!

Just want to give a big shout-out to the races's organizers. You guys did great job! I enjoyed every second throughout the race. Great fluid stations. Amazing support from the crews and the locals! And most important - kids patient champions are great! Keep it up with the good work done for good! High-five!

Great race for pros

Was my third marathon, and I am a slower runner (about 5 hrs to finish). The first half was perfect, and I got to the half a little ahead of schedule. Second half - well the heat turned up (got close to 80 degrees) and it seemed that all the shade and cloud cover just disappeared. Can't control the weather BUT - from about mile 16 to the finish, the liquids at the aid stations began getting really warm. My body was screaming for cool/cold fluids - the warm fluids caused some GI issues for me. Maybe the faster runners had cold fluids through the end, but not us slowpokes. Spectators were great the WHOLE course and the finish area had appropriate concessions.

Best marathon so far

This is the best marathon I have run so far. I have run many marathons too and this one was perfectly organized. For me it's the perfect size event. Not too big or small on the number of runners. Between 4-5 thousand do the full. The corrals were perfect with number of runners in each. Parking was easy. I parked in a parking garage $10 about 1 block away from start line. The finish line ends in the same spot so easy to get back to the car. While in the corrals minutes before the race that played AC/DC Thunderstruck to get you fired up which works for me. During the race the spectators were awesome, they had great bands at almost each mile. The water stations were well stationed with volunteers and plenty of water/Gatorade. It was a flat course, very scenic. The metals were big and very nice. There was a plenty of food being given out at the end. I have been to some marathons were you get a banana and a water and that's it. This marathon even had Bob Evans at the end serving breakfast for whoever wanted it. The post race party was entertaining. To make it all better this race was a new PR for me. The only negative is that we did not get to run on the field at Ohio State football stadium. We ran around the stadium. I am big Buckeyes fan so that would have been nice to do.

Best Organized Race so far

I thought this race was the best organized race I have ever run. The volunteers were top notch, the course was well marked, the water stops were plentiful and well organized. The finish line was well manned with plenty of first aid help and volunteers handing out water, food, and medals. My distance was off from the 26.2 as it read 26.59 and the end was much hillier than I had expected but I was prepared for it. I will definitely recommend this race to al my friends. I would run it again but I am attempting one in each of the 50 states. Dedicating the miles to the kids was amazing and the music throughout the course was great. Didn't even need my music. Columbus... you do marathons just right!

Top Large City Marathon

Very good experience overall. Getting to the expo was slightly difficult, Columbus doesn't have the most driver-friendly streets. Lots of one-way streets and very rough roads due to construction. Expo site was convenient but parking was a pain. We would have been better off parking at the host hotel and walking. The host hotel we stayed at was the Holiday Inn on Town Street. Nice hotel but several people we spoke with (including us too) had to argue for the free parking that was to be part of the deal and the room charges seemed a lot more than what the marathon pkg. was supposed to be...the only good part about staying here was it was clean and it was a little over a 1 mile walk to the start. No, there was not even an early race day breakfast for runners...so no, I would absolutely NOT stay here again as they did nothing for the runners. Race day morning was great, nice and cool at the start. lots of porta potties at the start corrals and the start corrals were monitored to get the right people in the right corrals and they were not too bunched up either. Nice start with fireworks and music. Of course, the start through the first couple miles were a little bunched up but there were a lot of runners. The course itself was mostly flat but again, its 26.2 miles...there will be some uphills and downhills as well. Lots of very well organized, well stocked water/Gatorade stops that were spaced out well. Great choice of Cliff Shot gel on the course as well! The vol. seemed as though they had done this for a long time and everyone was very good at their job. These seemed to be the most professional vol. I have encountered at any marathon, they did an excellent job in every facet and took their position seriously. Whoever oversees the group should be commended as each vol. has brought a sense of pride and professionalism to their task! Running through OSU was a nice change of pace but did not offer much crowd support. The finish was a slight uphill. The finish area was not congested at all and very well organized. The area was spread out, offered lots of food and drink items (loved the pancakes and sausage by Bob Evans!). Very nice and heavy medal for finishers too. There is a nice park close by...Mcfeerson Park, I believe, that is open and not busy at all with benches to sit on. It is a great place to meet family and friends and away from the noise and confusion of the finish. The only downside is that there were several of us that said our watches measured farther than 26.2, mine came in at 26.59. I don't run the same marathon 2x but if I did, I'd do this again!

Not too bad for a big city marathon

Let me start out by saying that I really don't like large marathons. I prefer smaller races where you can spread out and enjoy a quiet run in an open area. That being said, this was very enjoyable. The marathoners split at mile 13, and the last half was nice and open. Even the first half was pretty spread out, except for the first mile, which is typical. The medal, shirt, expo, and organization were excellent. Everything was very easy leading up to race morning. The number of spectators was incredible, and I don't remember seeing so many aid stations in other races. That was a great thing. The finish line organization was great. They made us walk a few hundred yards before the exit, which was nice since it helped improve blood flow. The 'spotters' around the exit were a thoughtful touch. The process for handing out food was nice, though more food options would have been preferred. Larger races tend to have less high-quality food that smaller races, maybe I just need to get over that. The one issue that must be addressed is bathrooms. Despite 'hundreds of restrooms,' I waited 30 minutes to use a porta potty in Corral A, and ended up getting to the start about 3-4 minutes before the gun went off. I know there were dozens of runners behind me who didn't get to go. You really need more than 40 or so porta potties for that number of people in each corral.

Top Tier Marathon

Every aspect of this marathon was top notch. The course had no hills to speak of, the organization was superb, the volunteers were helpful and friendly, and the spectators were numerous and joyful. I had an incredibly positive experience and I would highly recommend this race to everyone.

Excellent race

Very well-organized race. Website was very thorough with information; coming from California I felt totally prepared with all the info I needed. Expo was a breeze: parking was plentiful, no lines to get bibs/shirts. Really nice women's shirt. I got dropped off near the start and traffic was not a problem at all. Start line area was very well organized, and the fireworks during the national anthem and for the starting gun were a great touch. This was one of the few races I've been to that actually checks to make sure you're in the right corral to start - loved that. The course is very flat and fast, particularly the first half. Lots of spectators (though crowd support grew noticeably thinner after the marathoners split off from the half marathoners). Gatorade and water at all fluid stations, which were about 1-1.5 miles apart for most of the course. Everyone was super-friendly, and the patients from the children's hospital giving high fives along the course were a beautiful, inspiring touch. Overall, I have nothing negative to say about this race - really enjoyed it. If I lived closer to Columbus, I'd definitely do it again.

Exceed expectations (again)

As it almost always does, the 2015 Columbus Marathon again exceeded all expectations. It is such a well run event - Darris Blackford and his team continue to impress. The course modifications were improvements - best course layout yet (and while running through Ohio Stadium in years past was cool, I'm glad it was not included this year - getting in and out is too difficult at mile 17). Finish area felt a bit crowded, but overall it was set up really well. Huge improvement in the gear check pickup over last year. Honestly, I can't think of anything they could have done better.

Top Tier Race

My 4th Columbus Marathon and 5th time running the event. Compared to other marathons, my expectations are very high for this event as they have set the quite the bar in years past. 2014 saw some significant changes - new start/finish and some minor course modifications as a result. I liked the Broad Street start and Nationwide Blvd finish in years past, but I understand and appreciate the simpler logistics of a combined start/finish area. It seemed more crowded than normal - and the gear pick up was a disaster - in past years it was always very smooth so I have full confidence it will be fixed for next year. All things considered, it remains far and above my favorite race. Darris and his team are the class of the business.

Would do it again in a heartbeat

This was my first full marathon but I have done three large halfs previously so I know what I'm talking about when I say that this race has some of the best volunteers and organization around. They never stopped impressing me from their updates months before the race until I crossed the finish line. The course was scenic and exciting and relatively flat (and flatter than a certain race further North in the State which boasts how flat it is). Also, unlike a lot of other races which seem to be in the business of making money, this race seems like they want you to have a good experience, and you can tell from the race shirt, expo, finish line party, medals, and race support. Overall, I would recommend this race to everyone looking for a great race experience.

'New' course that needs a few tweaks for next year

I think the new start area worked well overall. Each corral had their own bank of porta-potties which were plentiful. The first 3/4 of a mile are on a fairly narrow road and you don't get a chance to spread out until you get to High and Broad. I prefer starting on Broad St. so you aren't so boxed in at the start. The finish area was a bit chaotic with no medals for some of the half marathon finishers. The race director sent out a communication the next morning explaining the situation and advising people to email their information if they didn't receive a medal. I spent over an hour waiting for my gear check bag, so that area needs some extra attention next year. Overall a good race and I liked the new course.

Friendliest Marathon?

Richmond Marathon claims to be 'America's Friendliest Marathon', and I can vouch for that event's awesomeness. Columbus Marathon is vying for this title for sure. I loved the event! Only criticism: Ohio Stadium. It's totally not necessary. It feels like it is a misguided attempt to connect to OSU football. A better connection would be to Jesse Owens, as the commonality of all on that day is running.

FANTASTIC RACE

Extremely happy I choose Columbus for my Ohio Race. The Expo was first rate and well organized, the course was extremely scenic (I loved going through the Buckeye stadium), the course support was fantastic, the fans were excellent and the medal was top notch. My only suggestion is to get a better t-shirtit was cheap and an ugly gray, but otherwise I LOVE this marathon.

Absolutely THE BEST!!!

They took a great race to another level. With the new start, and the new course, this is a MUST RUN! If you have a heart, which every marathoner does, you must run this race. Engaging with the Children's Hospital patients inspires every step. And the crowd support grew many multiples this year! HOME RUN!!!

Experience Columbus ethos on the run

In the upper 30s at the start, the runners has virtually ideal weather to run fast. Many ran faster than their hamstrings and other tendons could manage. This left a series of disabled marathoners from OSU stadium to the finish. I became one of these just short of the finish. Hobbled and happy, the finish line was eventually under my feet. The first half of the course was straightforward so was a quick run in such a temperature. There is little to describe other than its civility. The second half was somewhat nuanced with modest hills to manage. High Street rolled somewhat though the OSU roads before the stadium were flat. The inside stadium space was only the width of the field. The carpeted ramp down and the even surfaced ramp up were unique in that these were the first requirements to use different muscle groups. The mental adjustments continued as we began the road leading out of the campus. For some reason, the marathoners would not run tangent lines. The post stadium road showed a long line of single file runners in the middle of the road. Since the road was flat, I ran tangent lines which reduced the running distance. The bike trail just before mile eighteen felt good because it felt like a proper hill though modestly so. From there, the course was flat or downhill to the finish. As ordinary as this downhill running was, there was a wear issue to be managed. Seeing the long decline just past mile twenty two was not a positive moment. It was manageable but cost some tendon wear. It was near mile twenty four that the accumulated miles met my desire to complete the distance. The run down Front Street from mile twenty five to mile 25.75 was fine except that the last sweeping downhill began at that turn. Being so late in the run and aesthetically interestng to run, my tendons reached their wear threshold. The finish corridor opened just after mile twenty six being only wide enough for three runners so I tried to accelerate. This did not happen leaving me helpless. They filmed the finishing steps for everyone which I have not seen yet. My contribution will be a motley sight. Columbus has a very strong organizational and hospitality ethic which was apparent throughout the marathon process. I stood still in the expo, in the starting corral and in the celebration village after the race to just marvel at what was happening. All this orderly energy was joyful. I ran as fast as I could to meet this standard. I just made it.

Absolutely outstanding

If you need to run a marathon in Ohio or the Midwest, run Columbus. If you want to run a race that supports kids, run Columbus. First rate event from start to finish. Great corral start with separate bathrooms. Great, flat course with great pace leaders. Crowd support for the entire marathon was outstanding. Childrens champions is so unique and help make the race even more special.

Decent course; good crowds; terrible traffic

Registered in 2013 after a bad knee reduced me to the 1/2 in Akron two weeks earlier. The fans and course were enjoyable; fairly flat. Expo was excellent and medal is huge. What will prevent me from returning is the awful traffic congestion. I was within 1/2 mile at 5:45 and remained there for almost an hour to get to a garage. There had to be hundreds that did not start on time. Not worth it if you don't get a downtown hotel, which is tough on an OSU football weekend.

Excellent run

I thought this was an excellent run - especially in comparison to 2013 Cleveland marathon. The atmosphere was excellent all around. I signed up knowing that the horseshoe section was going to slow you down some but I thought it was a fun gimmick but can also understand why others didn't enjoy it. Plenty of water stations everywhere and fan support throughout was excellent everywhere with very friendly folks passing out oranges and bananas. Another poster mentioned this but Ill do the same here - from about mile 23.25-24.5 you run through this industrial section and over train tracks and it is a total buzz kill compared to the rest of the course, made it tough to slog through at that point. The finish was excellent with the downward slope. I thought the medal was badass - certainly bodyarmoresque. For those looking for a relatively hill-free course in Ohio I think this is the choice.

Top Notch

This was my first time running the Columbus Marathon and it was a great experience. Great crowd support (sorry, Richmond, but this is the new 'America's most friendly' marathon). Half and full run the first 13 together, then split, so crowd support was heavier in first 13 than last 13 (half marathon had nearly 3x more runners than full). Hotel let me check out 2 hours late, lots of food choices around the start / finish line for the night before, plenty of course support, mild inclines were unnoticeable, decent tee shirt (long sleeve), good bag check, etc etc. If I could change one thing it would be the portion through the OSU campus / stadium. That didn't do much for me, personally. I have already recommended this race to a number of fellow runners. One bummer is that MarathonFoto did not get me crossing the finish line.

Great people; brutal second half

The organization was excellent and the sheer number of volunteers was impressive and motivating (sorry to the 40 or so of you who fell victim to my incompetent gatorade cup grabbing). There was also great fan support throughout- I thought it was going to be good, and it was better than I expected. The course overall was nice- with a few (very gentle) hills and a good mix of neighborhoods and urban areas. But the 'horseshoe' diversion has to go. It's like a prank on the runners at mile 17, when they least need it. You can look at any person's time - pick any random person - and you are almost guaranteed to see a *much* slower pace between 28k and 20 miles than in any other portion of the race. Although pace normally takes a hit around mile 18 in any marathon, it is too pronounced here. Also, I remember a few of the last miles being pretty ugly- road was in bad condition, and we ran through an industrial area and over a train track. It was a weird way to end given how beautiful the city is otherwise. So, reroute the end somehow and ditch the horseshoe gimmick- keep everything else the same.

Getting Better Every Year

This is my 4th Columbus Marathon and I have to say that it keeps improving every time I run it! I thought the expo was better laid out this time, the bands and miracle mile kids on course were wonderful! My only complaint would be that having the porta john's lined up along the same path that folks needed to get to for the corrals was not well thought out. Such a high traffic area needs a little redesign. Some people don't like the section in the shoe because of the climb and turns, I really had no issue with this and thought it was neat to run through the stadium a bit. As long as they keep improving, I will come back-as a local, I like to try and support my hometown race.

Lots to be happy about

A well organized fun race. Notable stuff: 1. With 11,000 running the half and 7000 running the full the marathon doesn't fell like an after thought. 2. SWAP YOUR TOP!! Your pick up your shirt and just a few feet beyond that ... if you guessed wrong on sizing ... trade it right there at the expo. Here is a great idea I hope spreads to other events. Thanks Columbus. 2. No pacers and four corrals. Hard to know where to line up. But the start was fairly smooth. 3. Kept spectators a block away from the start area for security ... but his ended up making the starting line A LOT easier to navigate for runners. 4. Finish line spectators and that last (and only) downhill for the course is great. Chocolate milk my favorite. 5. As for the medal ... so big led me to wonder .. is this a finisher's medal or body armor?

In most respects an excellent event.

All in all, the event was very well organized. Getting through the expo required walking some distance, but I was in and out quickly. There were plenty of portajohns at the start-you just had to locate a group of them that wasn't in heavy use. I wish the corral start could be arranged such that runners could warm up outside the corral and then easily slip in 10 or 15 minutes before the gun. With so many runners, though, the starting area gets congested as the start time approaches. This is a fast course. No, it isn't pancake flat, but it's still flat. Im surprised no one has mentioned the 1/2mile incline on Buttles Ave. In mile 26-gradual but painful. I found the course varied and interesting, with only a few desolate stretches. Not bad when you consider that Columbus is a less-than-scenic city. There were an unbelievable number of bands on the course, which is not important to me, but I appreciated the effort. Spectators were enthusiastic-thick in a few places, sparse on most stretches. Water stops were very plentiful and well staffed. Now for a few complaints: Running through the stadium may be a pleasant diversion for casual runners, but for those running against the clock, it was a disaster. It took a good 10 turns to get around and through the stadium, amounting to a significant fraction of turns on the entire course. It also involved a jarring run down a steep ramp and a wearing run up another steep ramp. My foot pod measured mile 18 five hundredths of a mile longer than the preceding and following miles. I ran mile that mile 20 seconds slower than miles 17 and 19. The stadium loop is a PR killer on an otherwise fast course. A pet peeve of mine is water stations placed right at mile markers (miles 1 and 12, in this case). Runners who run through the water stops can't manage to both get a drink and check their watches. I would urge the organizers to keep water stations well away from mile markers. Finally, gear pickup was very poorly planned. I waited in a very long line in the chilly air in scant, wet clothing for about 20 minutes to get my bag. I hope this will be reorganized for next year. Complaints notwithstanding, this is a race well worth running, and I will certainly run it again.

Running Great in Columbus!

What can I say? Qualified for Boston at age 61 in second marathon ever, first being inaugural Country Music Marathon in 2000. Columbus course was mostly flat with a number of gradual upward grades, nothing major. Easy if you've done your homework. The music was excellent and at half mile intervals. Never seen so many portajons in my life. No line problem if you get there at a reasonable time and no worries out on the course. My corral was first in the second wave. No crowding at all from the start and never any crowding along the way. Lots of fanfare, even the second half was great. Exellent cheering section at the finish. Loved the medal. Only qualm was missing water in the finishing area before going to the family meet up place. No water there and you weren't allowed back into the finish zone. The expo was good, nothing like the Flying Pig Expo in Cincy!!! If coming from out of town, I highly recommend the Downtown Courtyard by Marriott on W. Spring. You're 1/2 mi. from the expo and start and a couple of blocks from the finish. Great hospitality, quiet & spotless. They had refreshments for the runners in the lobby when we got back. They allow late check out, but make sure you get on the list. Definitely enjoyed seeing Columbus on foot!

Terrific race

I had not run this race in 12 years and was concerned that it would have lost some appeal after growing and adding the half, but it was terrific. The corral system at the start worked well. The course is fast, with the first half featuring a lot of spectators. The second half is not as good, but with 26 miles, not every mile is going to be scenic and have crowds. The course is mostly flat and the High St hill was nothing serious. I have only run two marathons that are pancake flat and no marathons where I enjoyed the second half! Lots of well organized water stations - hydration is no problem at this race. The bands and DJs on the course were plentiful and a nice touch. I found no issues with the portapotties. I was able to get a free massage after the race. Weak areas: The expo is average, the race goody bag is mediocre and the post race food could be better. Medal was average. I don't happen to care much about those things, but many people do. There were a lot of people milling about at the finish due to the half marathoners, but I found my family quickly. For later finishers, the crowd in the finish area might have been a problem. Bottom Line: This is a well organized race on a fast course, good for first timers, veterans looking for PRs or BQ times and 50 staters!

Well organized Not a flat course

The race was very well organized and the crowd support for the first half was great. The second half of the marathon had far less support and miles 18-23 were all uphill. I've heard about the wall at 20 miles, but to be all uphill for that amount of miles late in the race was disconcerting. Take the course north or south and follow the river, for an out and back. The first half was great, the second half was another story. The description of pancake flat needs to be reassessed.

First marathon, loved it

Course was full of spectators, no real dead zones longer than a bridge or a block or two. Corrals were crowded with everyone packing the inside and outside of the entrances. Lines at the Porto potties at the start were long. There was a thick fog this year clouding the sunrise, and I think it clouded the view of the race ahead just before the finish of the half. I heard about that high street hill through miles 13-15 but it was truly isn't that bad. Other hills this year were at miles 17-18 over the bridge to the stadium then back over again, where you face runners ahead of you, then runners behind you on the way back over the bridge. Plenty of water stations, if I'm king, I'll have water set up like that for me for every run I ever do. The gel stations were great, gels are great. Was glad I could run past an obscure osu building where I spent about 90% of my undergrad, that was nice. The last time I was in Columbus I was a pack a day smoker and hadn't run more than a few feet in 10 years. This running tour of my old stomping ground may have been distracting, but it was also motivating. I'm coming back next year, bigger and stronger.

Don't overlook Columbus for your Ohio marathon

One of my favorites. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked this race. There are so many great marathon options in Ohio that I am sure Columbus gets overlooked. But that would be a shame. The course was perfect - 'urban scenic,' fast, fun. Mainly flat with the most noticeable hills being down! Columbus has beautiful neighborhoods, and the course does a nice job to showcase the city. Well organized and convenient for out of staters; lots of course support and crowd support; a first-rate send off/start. I agree with some of the comments about the first half being a little crowded, but as long as the organizers do not let the race get bigger, it works well.

Couldn't get to pacer

The awesome: crowds, live bands and music on course, weather 40-55 degrees, fueling stations had plenty of water and were well organized, crowd control was good. The not so great: I probably got there too late, arriving downtown Columbus around 6:20 am. Didn't park until 6:50 due to heavy traffic. Had to go to bathroom really badly. The line in Corral C was too long. I went to port a potty outside corral and when I got back it was full and closed. I couldn't get to 4:00 pace team and since I did a horrid job of pacing, I ran 4:01:39 and fell short of goal of breaking 4:00 but still a PR. Lesson: to get to pace team get there a lot earlier. Also, marathon might want to consider devoting more space for corrals plus additional pace team to start at rear of corral. Course is fairly flat but Mile 11-15 on High St does go gradually uphill and there are some hills on OSU campus Mile 17-19 that will slow you down. Food was Ok - bagel, bananas, cookies. No beer like Akron Marathon. Akron fireworks more spectacular but you don't run a marathon for the fireworks. Crowd support better than Akron Marathon. Plenty of port o potties but still a 10 minute wait to use them. Parked cars and fall leaves on street complicate running tangents.

Great job, Columbus!

First off, it's fantastic that Nationwide Insurance chose to change the race name to Nationwide Children's Hospital Columbus Marathon. It was great to see the 'children champions' at each mile mark. The expo was good. Nice race clothing merchandise options. Race day. Parking. Horrid. Had a prepaid permit for parking, and arrived very early, but it took 30+ minutes to go 1/2 mile once downtown to get to the lot. Major improvements needed here. Nice quantity of porta-potties. Race corrals were not nearly big enough-a couple hundred or more could not fit in the A-section. Nice race start with fireworks. Course. Nice. Pretty flat. Loved running thru the 'Shoe. Volunteers were great. A couple of the early waterstops could've been bigger, and at least one waterstop only served on one side, which was too congested. Post-race. Well-done. Nice medal. Mylar blanket. Pre-bagged goodie bag with several good food items. A very enjoyable race!

Well done Columbus!

This was a nice race and very well organized. It has a big city feel without all the big city hassle. Parking and getting to the bag check and starting line was pretty easy. The starting line area was open only to runners, so it was a bit like an athlete's village (lots of additional porta potties were in this area). The pre-race music and the fireworks at the start were also pretty cool. The full and the half run together for 13 miles, but the course still allowed enough running room for everyone. The aid stations were plentiful, very well staffed with energetic volunteers and marked with tall banners so you could see them coming. There was some congestion at the first few aid stations, but that's to be expected. Thanks to all the bands, musicians and dj's who came out on a cool morning to provide entertainment along the course. The race advertised 100 bands and although I didn't count, I would have to believe there really were that many. For anyone thinking about running this race in the future, leave the headphones at home for this one.... you won't need them. The spectators really are a big part of this race and they definitely gave it a big city feel. It's so nice to see a community come out and support its marathon. The crowds thinned out a bit after the half marathoners turned off to finish, but at least we had them for the first 13 miles. After that there were pockets of people until you got to within a few miles of the finish where the spectators packed the sidewalks again. The course is definitely one of the flatest I've seen. The layout is nice since it takes you through different parts of the city and you never get that lonely feeling like when some courses send you out in to the middle of nowhere. This course is fun to run and can certainly be a BQ or a PR. I had never been to Columbus before, but I really had a good time running this race and visiting the city. I would definitely recommend this race... great job Columbus!

Got to fix some issues before next year

This is my 15th Columbus marathon. 2nd time on the new course. For the most part it's a great marathon, up there with Boston and N.Y.C. with organization and fan support. But I can only give it 4 stars this year because: 1. The course is .10 miles too long. Everyone with a GPS watch(there are many in our group) beep earlier as the course progress. Officals better check that 360 degrees turn at Ohio Stadium should actually be there. 2. Too many people in the race for the start. It's great but with 17,000 of runners wil eventually narrow into 2 lane streets. Think about corral start with qualify(1/2 marathon) times or start the half 1/2 hour later. Next year, they are expecting 22,000. That's going to be a mess. 3. Porta johns should be lined up from parking lots(finish lines) to the start. This will help the mass number of people just waiting in the starting area. 4. Bring the old course back. I know the city wants this to be over with quickly but the start is now 2 1/2 hour later then my 1st Columbus.

Nearly Flawless

This was my 2nd Columbus marathon and it was a great experience. You can tell it is an event by runners for runners. There were bands or music playing everywhere and almost the entire course had spectators cheering. The course has some gentle rollers, but if you run any hills at all you will barely notice them. If you run this get to the start early, it got really congested this year and they are increasing their capacity in 2012.

Glad I ran Columbus for my 1st full marathon

Great race! The start was exciting with fireworks and the firing of the cannon on the statehouse lawn. Lines for port-a-potties were very long by the start. I managed to find some with no lines down a random alley/sidestreet by Corrals C/D. Perhaps a detailed map of the start area next year to show exactly where port-a-potties are located? The course takes you through many of the main areas of Columbus (Downtown, Bexley, Old Town East, German Village, Short North, OSU Campus, Upper Arlington, Grandview, Victorian Village, and Arena District). Crowd was great overall but there are a few dead areas on the course with minimal support. OSU Campus (miles 16-19) was sparse and there was an industrial wasteland (miles 23-24) between Grandview & Victorian Village that was also lacking. The finish was great! Downhill with big screens and the announcer calling your name(s). I heard people complaining about the post-race food but it didn't really bother me. The course is fairly flat but there are some slight hills between miles 17-20. Also, going up High St. from miles 11-15 is a slow gradual incline but nothing too bothersome. Overall, a great race and I'll definitely do it again next year!

Well Organized Marathon

I was very impressed with the organization of this marathon. Cannon start. Fireworks at the start. Fluid stations evenly spaced out. What impressed me the most about this marathon was the tremendous fan support for a mid size marathon. Also the vast # of Rock Bands and DJs and some High School Bands on the course. There was always something to listen to on every street we ran. Reasonably priced marathon. RNR Organizers take note. I did not anticipate the 2nd half of the course to be almost entirely downhill. It helped me obtain a BQ once again. Expo was good. It was a very nice course, going through the neighborhoods of Bexley and Upper Arlington. It was also nice running through parts of OSU, including past the football stadium. It was worth taking this trip to Columbus. Also visitng The Jack Nicklaus Golf Museum, The Pro football HOF, and The Rock and Roll HOF after the marathon made it even more worthwhile to visit The Buckeye State.

Great overall with a few areas of concern

Overall a great experience. A few issues: 1) The race packet is very underwhelming - just coupons; 2) The full medal is identical to the half medal (except in color); and 3) Personally do not care for a downhill finish (tough on the knees and shins).

Tremendous build-up an start!

I have never experienced a better send off for a marathon. They must have hired the best cover band in Ohio; they played for maybe a half hour and got us (quietly, unresponsively..we are all nerds on this bus) PUMPED. And a real cannon Then: Fireworks. Fireworks make my hair stand up. And A REAL CANON!! And a guy who could sing to do the National Anthem! WOW!! (sorry, there is rarely no substitute for exclamations). Yankee uniforms on the cannoniers. Save your Confederate money, boys, the politicians are bankrupting the union.

PR at Columbus with great fan support

I would list all the positives, but it's quicker just to say that the list covers almost everything. No, the course is not "FLAT." There are some rolling hills in the second half, and High St. is a very gradual 5-mile "hill," and the rollers at the end will get your attention, BUT this is NOT a hilly course. Come on, it's a marathon. If it were easy, everyone would be doing it!!! The only section of the course that could use some work was the section just east of the OSU campus that was really cambered to both sides, and had several 4-6 foot-long speed bumps. What's up with that? Also the medals were just O.K.. Other than those 2 small details, everything else was fantastic! And, oh, by the way, I beat my previous PR by 14 minutes, so if you're looking to PR, this could be the course for you. Go to C-Bus for a fast time, good value, and great spectators. Go, Bucks!!! O H ... I O.

FUN but not flat!

This was the third time to run the Columbus Half and I've previously run the full marathon twice. Oustanding race organization and an amazing start complete with live band and fireworks, but it was entirely too congested until the half marathon turns off to the finish line. Crowd support with bands/music is incredible! Plenty of jiffy-johns, water and Gatorade every mile, although the use of plastic cups for water was stupid, making a dangerous mess on the street. When you tried to fold them into a V to drink, obviously they cracked and broke. UGH! My pet peeve about Columbus is that it's NOT flat! Look at the elevation map. A steady incline up High Street, which is 5-miles long, as well as rolling hills beginning at mile 17. "Flat" to me is "pancake flat from start to finish," which Columbus is not. The downhill to the finish is invigorating, but on a brick road, which can make for some near falls/wipeouts. Post-race food was horrible. Krispy Kreme donuts and cheese puffs? White bagels in plastic wrappers? The only fruit was cut bananas, which were messy/slimy. Usually the food is yogurt, whole bananas, and various flavors of fresh bagels - they've obviously cut back on the food to make a better finisher's medal since it is by far the best medal I have received in any marathon/half marathon. Unique and bIG! Overall, from the perspective of an experienced marathoner/runner, Columbus is a great event. My negative comments are meant to inform the participant of what others may not mention. If you are looking for fun, organized, and relatively fast course with undeniably great weather year after year, this is it.

Major Marathon Quality Without the Trappings

WOW! I ran Columbus back in the 80's, and it became a standard by which I judged other marathons. Then it seemed to slip somewhat sometime after hosting the Olympic marathon trials. But all I can say about this year's experience is Columbus IS BACK! When I read other reviews of races they will be much more mixed than you're going to read and hear about Columbus. The negatives of this year would seem like comparative whining and the positives are numerous. Highlights: very organized race expo with short lines for "edgy" and nervous runners; highly visible mile markers and water stations EVERY MILE that you could see from a quarter mile away; it seemed like there was some kind of musical entertainment every few blocks (did I really hear there were almost 100?!); the governor shouting encouragement at mile 4 or 5; a fairly scenic race course taking you through some of the best of Columbus; one of the flattest 26.2 courses you'll ever find (every course will have some hills, but come on...); and a real nice finisher's medal and finish with the big screens. I really appreciated the encouraging guy at 20 calling out our names telling us we were "busting through 20" when we all knew we were crawling (nice touch). I know they've tinkered with the course over the years, but I agree with others that they've got it right now. Don't change it. Even though I hadn't done this race for a few years, I heard a lot of people say comments like "best ever." When you've trained so hard for one big day, you need the weekend to be as comfortable and pleasing of an experience as possible, and Columbus delivers!

Another great day

This was my second marathon of the weekend. My first double! I really enjoyed this marathon. It was crowded for the first half, but once the half marathoners left, it was perfect. I was able to run a negative split. Turns out that the early crowds slowed me down enough to ensure a fast finish. I especially enjoyed the tour of OSU campus and the return back into town. Flat and fast. I was able to lock in a pace and finish to a great crowd at the finish. The fan support and aid stations were great the whole way. Columbus is a wonderful city!

Easily the best of the cities that I've run

I try to run as many different cities as I can, but I always keep coming back to Columbus. The course is beautiful, flat and fast. There are 20 or so water stations evenly placed. The fans come out in big numbers and line the course from start to finish. The starting line and finish line congestion were adequately controlled. The best bang-for-the-buck marathon by far. Drawbacks are small but worth noting: goody bag had nothing to help prepare for the race - just flyers and ads. Also, gel stations were placed at miles 7 and 15. There should have been one at around mile 20.

Great course support & entertainment!

Columbus is well organized and probably one of the most music-packed courses I've run. OK, some of the bands weren't as musically adept as others, but I enjoyed the effort and variety every half-mile or so! I also noted a distinct effort to cover some of the "dead stretches" of the course with banners/flags and entertainment. There were plenty of water stops and porta-potties along the course (at least eight porta-potties every mile or so). Lots of community involvement; expo, the bike patrols, and the spectators. The 15,000 runner cap is probably as far as they can go. It bordered on being rather congested for probably 5 miles despite using the corral system, but it was manageable. Parking around the finish area in one of the Nationwide Arenas ($5) was convenient and easily accessible. I think in retrospect, though, that the race lacks a little imagination. The course was good but how about waking up OSU a little? A side trip into one of the OSU sporting venues would have been a highlight and the medal and shirt were downright boring; a round medal with just the state outline of Ohio, sponsor name and event?!? Come on, Columbus, you're a good event but now zest it up a little and make it special!

A POSITIVE EXPERIENCE

I was impressed with the Columbus Marathon. Having run 61 marathons, I would rate it near the top. The video of the course that we could view on tv was very helpful. Fantastic crowd support that was much better than most throughout the marathon. Handsome shirt that will not find its way into a storage box, as many do. I would have paid for a soft drink after crossing the finish line. Take your credit card, since our host hotel was over $200 per night. This is definitely a "must run" marathon.

Awesome Race!!

This was a homecoming for me. The course was flat for the most part, which allowed me to finally beat the 4-hour time that I have been shooting for. I don't think there was any part of the course that didn't have awesome fan support. And running by the Horseshoe was great. This is a must-do for anyone looking to PR, and feel the support of every community you run through. Thanks for a great homecoming, Columbus.

Fun race on a flat, fast course

The race is very well organized. The course has changed over the years but the current course is the best by far. Enthusiastic spectators and volunteers. The race organizer does a great job to make sure that the runners have everything they need along the race course with frequent, fully staffed water stops. It is a great regional marathon and is perfect for those seeking a Boston Qualifier.

Loved the course and there a lot of fan support at the finish. They resolved finish chute problem from 2009 and the corrals are a step in the right direction. Didn't see too many spectators on OSU's campus, though.

A Fast Marathon in a Great City!

This was a very nicely run marathon. The course showcased the city beautifully. I had never been to Columbus and was a little apprehensive about the city. But it is really a nice, medium-size city. It would have been nice to spend more time there for sure. The crowd support was very good. Only a few times did I think, "Where are all the fans," and more than a few times the amount of support was so amazing that I was overcome by all of the fantastic support. PROS: - The course is flat and fast. I had a PR and my first BQ! - The course is great for visiting spectators. It was so easy for my family to navigate; they saw me 6 times! - They said there were 80 bands on the course and I believe it! - Great post-race food rocked: Soup, chocolate milk, bagels, chips, pretzels, bananas, Gatorade, water. - Fireworks at the start were very cool! - Corrals worked wonderfully! Each corral had "guards" checking bibs; this was kind of annoying but it kept everyone in the right place. I was not stuck behind a whole bunch of slow runners. CONS: - The shirt was a nice, Nike, tech t-shirt. But the overall design was pretty lame. Not impressed. - The 1st half of the race was beautiful, the second half was a little little dull in comparison. OSU campus was pretty barren. - The expo was small but overall pretty nice. However, the goodies in bags pretty much only contained the bib. Nothing else. The cons were minor. The pros made this race one that will go down in the memory book as very simply "Awesome!" Would I run this marathon again? Maybe, only because there are so many great marathons.... Would I recommend this race? Absolutely! Without hesitation.

Great race. Would do again.

Organization: This year, 2010, was the first year it sold out and a corral system was introduced. Being in corral 1, it was a struggle to fight the crowd to get there, but the system worked well. I was hardly slowed down at all in the first mile. The expo was ok. And the finish/recovery area was well done, with plenty of room and refreshments and pictures. The course was pleasant, with little few out-and-back routing, which is important to me. Spectators along the way were very encouraging, especially in the last 6 miles and at the finish. It was not as hilly as the Dayton USAF, but don't believe anyone who says it's flat. There are still plenty of gradual hills that will work you - just nothing that I'd call steep. I just have one complaint. I registered 2 months in advance, and yet they were out of my shirt size at packet pickup! I don't know if this was poor organization or some sort of screw-up with the shirt ordering, but it was disappointing.

Great race with no mental mountains

Columbus Marathon has a reputation as a great Boston qualifier. It's decently flat, but more importantly, there are no "mental mountains" thrown in your way (e.g., dead stretches, hills, wind). The course has regular aid stations, changing scenery and great crowd support - especially from miles 19+. My only slight negative is that the first 13.1 miles are pretty crowded, with 8,000+ 1/2 marathoners. Lots of bobbing and weaving. That being said, it probably kept my adrenaline in check. Two years ago the course changed to route through Ohio State's frat row. The Buckeyes lost a late Saturday night game, so students weren't exactly lining the streets at 9 in the morning, but we did see several "walks of shame" - that was entertaining. I noticed comments from previous years dinged the race for not enough port-o-johns. There were a TON throughout the course this year.

Buckeyes Lose but Columbus Delivers Again

Again the weather was perfect and the race organization outstanding. Thanks for making extra aisle space at the expo. The medals were improved this year, although I miss the shoe bags from past years. Loved the new blue color for my race shirt (1/2 marathon this year). Plenty of parking near the start and finish. Please add room where the racers finish if possible - it was very confining and guests won't grab the food if that's what you were worried about. I will run an event here every year till I retire from running!

Great Race with Pros and Cons

I really enjoyed running the Columbus Half Marathon. The bands were great, and the hydration stations were excited to see everyone and very encouraging. There were 3 minor cons to it though: 1. The bathroom stops were VERY crowded during the early part of the race (recommend more porta-johns in these spots). 2. There were a lot of turns onto back streets (it was a little hard on the knees). 3. Be prepared at the end of the race to come to an almost complete stop. The racers' reception area only had a VERY small entrance to go through and people were having to fight their way up a small set of stairs. Recommend having wider reception gate to go through. Being downtown made it feel even colder than the everyday post-race chills.

I love this marathon!

My first Columbus Marathon was in 2008, which was my first ever, and I came back in 2009 because I enjoyed it so much and qualified for Boston. It is extremely well organized and the course is very flat and fast. Yeah, the crowd thins out a little in parts of the second half of the race, but overall, I would recommend this race to anyone, especially a first-time marathoner! Planning on returning for 2010....

Good for first-time...

As my first marathon, Columbus was a good choice. Overall, I really enjoyed the course... for the first half of the marathon. After the half marathon turn-off, it cleared out. Hardly any spectators, especially around OSU. But, there were water/Gatorade stations every mile, with porta-johns about .25 miles away from the water stations. The bands were also great. My REAL complaint was the lack of anything for the big, slow runners like myself. When I passed, some of the bands were packing up. When I finished, there was only ONE tent open that tried to get me to buy something! No finish band, no massage, no nothing! I wanted to buy several Columbus Marathon shirts, but they only offered S, M, and L. No XL shirts for tall, big guys like me. That was a bummer. Even though there were some CONS, I still had a wonderful time. It was also nice walking into the Hampton Inn-Downtown Columbus to a round of applause from the staff!

Excellent course - see tips below

I have run this race several times. It is very well organized and has lots of runners at different levels. I have my PR here. My suggestions: 1) Watch crowds at the beginning; they can last a couple of miles, depending on your pace. 2) Early water stops were crowded, but get water anyway. 3) Look for the governor (I think it is about mile 6 - 7). You go by his house. 4) Coming up on the half, there was lots of crowd support; don't get carried away. 5) Draft on High Street. It's always windy!

Rating of the Columbus Marathon

The Columbus Marathon was my eighth career marathon. My whole life I had always heard how flat and fast this marathon was. I went out at a good steady pace, but a little bit too hard. I didn't realize it was so hilly. I had to back off a little bit to finish. The race was well organized and had tons of spectators. If you haven't run this marathon, you have to run it. The weather was great.

Great Atmosphere

This was my first marathon. The bands were great, all of the water stops were organized and well stocked, and the spectators were very encouraging. I thought the course was very flat, and I am not sure what some consider hills, but I did not run anything I would consider a hill. The only thing I thought was lacking was the goody bag; everything else was great.

Course is overrated

I used this race to go for a PR, since it was billed as flat and fast and I had already BQ'd. The first half was as advertised - I could have PR'd for 13.1. However, there were more hills than anticipated in the second half. But my main problem with the course is that there are too many (44) 90-degree turns, and one very tight hairpin 180. It's a hip buster! Other than that, the expo was good, the number of bands on the course was awesome, and I still managed a BQ for 2011, if not a PR. The T-shirt and medal are both pretty ugly, but I like the finisher hat. That logo is as old school as Jim Tressel's offense!

Lots of Fun

For not being one of the bigger marathons in the nation, it sure was exciting. Many thanks to all of the cheering spectators and musicians. I remember the cool saxophone and the man jammin' "You may lose or you may win, but you will never be here again... take it easy." Nice.

A different perspective.

I have some perspective on aspects of the race that most readers will hopefully not need, but it's nice to know it's available. I collapsed before the finish line of the half marathon due to a problem with my heart. The medical team came to my aid immediately and calmly packed me up and got me to the emergency room only a short drive away. I was very impressed with the efficiency of the entire process. My biggest surprise arrived yesterday when my drop bag that I had waiting for me at the finish line arrived in the mail. (I never had the chance to pick it up.) That is the kind of "going the extra mile" attitude that runners really appreciate in a race. Thank you very much to the entire organization for putting on such a quality event.

Pleased with Columbus as my first marathon.

Everything was easy to get to, I enjoyed the course, and the spectators were great. Turned out to be a enjoyable first marathon. Only two complaints: the start was unorganized and crowded; and I felt lost after the finish.

Wonderful race with lots of fans and music

This is a great, small-mid-sized-city marathon. Columbus is a nice town and the volunteers were great. The route winds through beautiful neighborhoods and is mostly flat. The start was unorganized and family members clogged the corrals by staying with runners until the gun sounded. The race needs to fix that. The finish is great, being downhill and into a corral of fans squeezed between buildings. There were an amazing number of musicians and fans along the route (especially for a small marathon). Weather typically is good and cold and great for running. Trees were in perfect color, making the sunrise spectacular along the tree-lined historic streets. PROS - Music at about every mile, plenty of food and drink, flat course, nice town. CONS - Very little at the expo, shirt Nazi refused to change sizes for me even though the very nice tech shirts were clearly running very big, the race start was crowded with non-runners, and weather is a wild card in Ohio during October.

Excellent Environment! Top-Notch Event!

This was my first marathon, but I have run other races in many parts of the country and even outside of the US. PROS: Electric Atmosphere: If you are thinking small when thinking Columbus, Ohio... think again! Columbus is the 16th largest city in the US. There were about 15,000 participants lined up for the start! Fans were everywhere along the run, cheering ALL participants on. I felt like I had thousands of fans, even though only my spouse came to watch. It was truly inspiring to have complete strangers cheering me on to finish all throughout the course. Wonderful Scenery: The course moved through high rise downtown, a small college campus town, multiple historical neighborhoods, The Ohio State University campus and the Arena District. Fall trees were in the midst of changing colors and provided a beautiful backdrop. There was just about everything on this course, which kept the entire run interesting. Mile Markers with Race Time were Clearly Posted: Every mile there were very large markers with electronic timing posted. The time was from the gun start (not your electronic device), but it was still a very useful tool. Perfect Water, Gatorade, and Carb Gel Distribution: Every mile or so these stations were available. They were well staffed and the volunteers were very encouraging. Awesome Finish: The final mile was a complete celebration and was full of cheering fans. At the finish line, the MC announced every finisher's name as they crossed the line to the roar of the crowds. Volunteers placed the medals around all finishers necks, while other volunteers covered the runners with warming capes. All finishers also received a winter running hat. Runners then made their way through an area, still safe from the crowds, where they could stock up on bagels, doughnuts, water, milk and chips. This area opened directly into celebration park, where family and friends were waiting. A live band played on stage, while families enjoyed the festivities and various booths and games. Runners could enjoy a free 15-minute massage. It truly was an awesome finish. Very well organized and the kind of finish you would expect from a top-notch event! CONS: Since no event is perfect, I have to add just a few minor cons. I must emphasize again that these were minor. Cold: Ohio weather is unpredictable during this time of year. Most of the time in Ohio, you will not see temperatures in the thirties in October. Unfortunately for this race, the starting temp was around 33 and it only warmed up to about 45 during the run. If you run this race, just come prepared for colder weather with proper layers. The Ohio State University route: The course near the university ran through some side streets that were not as well-kept as the rest of the event. I actually rolled my ankle, but recovered. If they made a few minor changes, the course near the university could be much prettier. The nicest areas of the campus were not part of the course. I will run this marathon every year, but will keep working towards my goal of 50 in 50 states. The Columbus Marathon was fantastic!

Great PR Marathon

This was a great marathon for a PR. Fast course, tons of music on the course, AMAZING weather, great spectators, water stops galore, two gel stops, and no crowds on the course. The two negatives were: 1) the crowded, disorganized starting corrals - too crowded to find the start or the bag drop (though it didn't affect the run at all); AND, 2) the t-shirt was skimpy. But overall, I would highly recommend it and I would run this again.

Flat Course, Poor Expo/Shirt, No OSU Support

I ran Columbus for the second time, and mid-October in Ohio brought ideal marathon weather: Start in the mid/upper 30's, finish in the upper 40's. Course is well laid out and a variety of neighborhoods. Very disappointed in the experience of running through OSU campus. Being one of the largest campuses in the nation and integral part of Columbus, you would think that the OSU administration would do more to support the race. There were no campus organized activities whatsoever, and it was a virtual ghost town for the several miles routed through campus. Would be nice to have OSU band play or some support by athletic teams and/or educational staff. Lone support was the few brave young soles who decided to get up before 11:00 a.m. on a Sunday. Course volunteers were great, with very well organized/staffed water stations. The finish line area was not staffed properly with gear check unattended and bags left for anyone to grab without checking bib numbers. I needed to find a massage area and it took five minutes to find any volunteer in the Celebration Village to find out were it was. Overall I would say that it's a decent mid-size (15,000 combined runners) race: 4,000 full, 7,000 half, then some 5K runners, and walkers. But I left unsure if I would race again. I get the feeling that race organizers take runners for granted. The expo is the worst I have seen, with little or no giveaways or incentives to check booths, and the t-shirt they give for a full marathon is a joke.

flat course - a little crowded

This was my sixth time running Columbus and I finished in the middle of the pack, in just under four hours. The start of the race was very crowded. They started the full marathon, half marathon, and walkers at the same time. That meant we had about 15,000 people lined up in the street with little organization to it. Be careful to seed yourself properly or be prepared to be boxed in for the first six or seven miles. Starting the walkers with that many runners made for some challenges as we'd come upon groups walking four-abreast arm-in-arm. They should start the walkers earlier, like they used to, so that the field has thinned out by the time you catch up to the walkers. The race course itself is fairly flat, but there are a few gentle grades along the way. The water stops were plentiful and the course is fairly scenic. It's mostly asphalt with a few small sections on brick (near Ohio Stadium) and concrete (around mile 23), Some of the roads have a camber to them, but if you stay on the crown of the road, it's not an issue. The course is very spectator-friendly ,with your supporters being able to see you several times in the downtown area just by walking a few blocks. The crowds were very supportive in the downtown area, but there are some stretches where the crowds are sparse - like the Ohio State campus (dead). The medals were very cool this year. One of my favorite medals. They could improve the finish line area a little bit by giving the runners a little more room to exit into the park - I was crowded again by other runners and spectators making their reunions. They need to open it up a little more. All in all, Columbus does a good job with their marathon, but I think they need to work on improving their handling of a field of 15,000 runners at the start and finish. (There were 5,000 registered for the marathon, and 10,000 for the half.)

Great Course & Spectators, Pre-Race Disappointing

The course was great and really well-supported throughout. The neighborhoods were beautiful! The OSU campus was a bit of a disappointment, although still beautiful. Unfortunately the expo and pre-race communication left a lot to be desired. There was no race-day info in the expo packet (if you hadn't checked online, you'd be clueless). I was very disappointed with the expo itself, too. It seemed kind of empty, without much variety.

Nice, flat course - plenty of fluid and fuel

I would suggest you change to a partially seeded starting platform, much like the Mini-Marathon at Indy (three seeded corrals). I stayed at the Westin and walked up High St. to the start area. I could not get to the 3:40 pace group starting area without obnoxiously pushing past everyone between 5:30 and 3:40. I don't think it should be necessary to be at the course an hour or more early (especially when it's relatively cold like 2009) to get to your starting position. Three or four seeded corals that can be entered from gates on the side should solve the problem. The downside would be the extra volunteers to man the gates, but I think it would be worth it. I'm 61 and I could have used some of the energy I blew off getting through the walkers from mile 23 on. Overall, I think this marathon is very well run and provides an excellent experience that I can recommend to other runners. Thanks.

A big thank you to Columbus!

I have ran half-marathons in the past but this was my first full-marathon and my first time in Columbus. I thought the people were very friendly and the crowd support was great. It seemed well organized except for the start. We could not get in the gated area until several minutes after the start and it was too difficult getting through the crowd of people. There were plenty of water/Gatorade stations and I loved the buckeye candy at mile 25. The course was scenic and basically flat. Calling out names around mile 20 in addition to the finish line was a great idea. Overall, this was a great first marathon. A big thanks to all of those people in Columbus who worked to make it a supportive and safe event.

Awesome event

If you are looking for a flat and fast course, this is it. I have run this marathon six years in a row. Cool weather, plenty of enthusiastic volunteers, and a great course make this my favorite marathon. I had a PR this year. The organization is superb, as well as the entry fees and goodies. And have a Thurman burger when you're done!

LOVED IT

This was my second marathon and I loved the course. It is very fast and I felt well organized. I thought the changes from last year (my husband ran) made a big difference. My only complaint was that the shirt was boring as was the medal. I also could have used a Mylar blanket, which were gone very quickly due to the half marathoners. But the course is fast, and if you're making a bid for Boston, this is a good course for it.

Mediocre

Little bang for a big buck. All RD's are looking for a profit, and FRR has found a way to make a decent profit from this event. Tweaking the course every year to minimize road closures equates to money saved and course confusion.

Comments from an out-of-town rookie

As a rookie, I don't have the depth of experience to compare Columbus to other marathons. But, I'll offer a few comments for consideration. Pre-race support was excellent, especially the ability to see the entire course via Google Earth. I was familiar with every twist and turn before I even came to town, and that helped during the race. The downtown hotel was very accommodating and convenient. I wish there were more pre-race activities for those traveling from out of town to make it more of an experience (e.g., pasta dinner). So, I was disappointed by the lack of activities at the expo, especially when they ran out of shirts (I did get mine in the mail after Christmas, which I do appreciate!). The course was flat, as advertised by many friends. I was concerned about "hills" around Mile 18, but they were more on the order of "inclines." I was not bothered by twists and turns in the course, but my goal was to enjoy the race and not necessarily push for time. I thought Bexley, Germantown, Short North and OSU were especially great areas. Race day organization was great and volunteers were outstanding. There were plenty of fluid stations, although I had to quickly learn how to handle congestion. Entertainment was great, but seemed to disappear after Mile 20, when I could have used the boost even more. There was a shortage of Mylar blankets at the finish line. I had to fish one out of a trash barrel. There was a good assortment of food. I have read some comments about the medal, but, as a rookie, it looks beautiful to me. Most of all, I cannot say enough about the spectators - the number and their enthusiasm. They really made my first marathon special, cruising home in a comfortable 3:47. I intend to run Columbus again in the future and thank everyone involved for their efforts.

Did not care for the changes

I ran Columbus as my first marathon in 2004. The course was long and boring along High Street, but I think I preferred that to running all those turns "up-slope" through an empty OSU campus. I say "up-slope," because, although there are no real hilly areas, the incline from miles 16 to 20 gets a bit tiring, especially since it's through the campus area, where the students don't seem to know that there's a marathon going on. Of course, I wouldn't expect anything like Wellesley, but just a little interest would help. Crowds were good in select areas, especially through the first half and at the end. Although I sound disappointed in the course, I did do a PR and BQ. Now that I've done this one twice, I don't think I need to return - just not that exciting compared to other marathons.

Still the Best

I love this race - it's my favorite marathon (and I have run Boston!). Although my third Columbus Marathon resulted in a PR, I have to downgrade my opinion of the whole experience just slightly because the second half of the new course is a bit too twisty-turny for a fuzzy-headed marathoner trying to PR. The fans and bands were even better than ever! The fluid and gel stops are extremely well-organized. I can't say that the Gatorade and H2O continued to flow for all participants, but for those running under 8:00 pace, it was like clockwork. The new Ts have a better design, but are short-sleeved; the reusable logo bag with race goodies is also a nice replacement for the usual plastic. Packet pick-up was also quite easy and the expo had plenty of everything a runner could want. But what really counts to me is the course, the organization, and the crowds - and here Columbus remains a gem. I just hope it doesn't get too much bigger, because the start and the first 3 miles can be pretty congested. Love ya, Columbus! See you next fall.

A super marathon for all skill levels.

I was very pleased with this year's marathon. The course was a pleasant change and I appreciated the inclusion of the stadium. The water stations have always been great and the increased music helped the miles pass. As a "back of the pack" person, I had no complaints about a crowded course. The volunteers stayed on their job and were quite pleasant and helpful. There were even spectators cheering at 6 hours. Please keep this event for all types of participants. I plan to continue to be the oldest female finisher. Columbus, No. 27 at 72

Very flat, fast race!

I thought this race was very flat and very fast! I do MINIMAL hill training, if at all, and I did not see any hills on this course. If anything, there are a lot of downhill portions that are great. I read these reviews before running the race and people kept saying that there are hills between miles 12-18. I tried to prepare myself for those miles and never encountered any. I would definitely run this race again if I needed to PR or BQ.

Flat and fast

I echo previous comments. I was at the expo around noon Saturday and they did no have my shirt size. I presume that there was mix-up with the order and not enough XLs came in. Expo was so-so, with poor layout, traffic-wise. Race day was chilly, but good for running. Course was flat and fast, with no long hills. I ran a PR by 11:30 and got my BQ. No space blankets at the end sucked and the food area for the runners was kind of limited. I was pretty hungry after the race and the traffic funneled you out of the finish area into the post-race celebration area. It would have been nice to have a little room to refuel without dealing with all the traffic coming through from the finish line.

Nice race, but I want my race t-shirt!!!

Overall, I would rate the Columbus Marathon as a very good race. The course is as flat as a pancake. Those few tiny bumps on the 2nd half of the course certainly are not hills! Aid stations were great. Spectators were great. The finish line was great. My ONLY complaint is I did not receive my race t-shirt at packet pick-up as they were already out of my size. I don't care how cheap or unattractive the shirt is; I expect to receive one in the mail soon as promised by the volunteer at the pick-up. Also, I thought the finisher's medal was OK. I mean what the heck is it supposed to look like anyway???

Another Great Day

With this being my 8th or so Columbus Marathon it was by far the best. The change to the second half of the course was long overdue, and I think it made the course faster. It's slipping...

I've run this race three times now, and while Columbus does a decent job, I felt that they are cutting too many corners. Corners - let's start there. This race has too many of them; the redesigned course added several hard turns (and even a 180 around a cone by Ohio Stadium). Also, the new course layout takes you through a residential neighborhood around mile 7, on streets that are far too narrow for that point of the race (especially with half-marathoners too). We got stuck behind one of the larger pace groups and could not get by until the course returned to (much wider) Broad St. Also, this part of the course contained several speed bumps, and I saw a couple of runners trip on these hazards. The expo was a complete mess. It seemed much smaller than in prior years, and the flow had both incoming and outgoing traffic using the same main path. In prior years, it was more of a circle layout, so the traffic was not nearly as congested. The T-shirt was pretty weak - a sad gray number. I don't care much about it, except to note that the shirts in prior years were much nicer. The start area was overcrowded. I think it's time for Columbus to institute a corral/preferred start system, if it isn't cost prohibitive. The finish was a bit of a debacle. They had Mylar blankets (definitely good because it was a chilly day)... but alas, they ran out by the time we finished (3:45). I saw several runners fishing used blankets out of trash bins. The food was very weak: water, Gatorade, fruit, chips, and Myoplex Lite (because after running 26 miles, the last thing you need is calories, right?). I don't want to come off as a whiner, so let me point out the good: it's an interesting and mostly flat course; there are plenty of fans and support along the way to keep you motivated; there are more fluid stops than I think I've ever seen in a race; and they have a fast and efficient gear check. I do like the race overall, and would consider doing it again. But it is going to have to take a number behind Akron, Detroit, Chicago, and any number of other fall marathons. And most importantly, it's not the fact that they are lacking in several areas that bothers me; it's the fact that they WEREN'T lacking in those areas in prior races.

Flat and Fast

Perfect day to race. I was warned about a hill at mile 18, but I never saw it. Weather was perfect. They ran out of t-shirts, which was kind of a bummer as they were Nike Dri-Fits. If you want a PR, go to Columbus.

Good first-time marathon

I chose this marathon as my first because it was flat. It was flat as advertised. Those who make reference to the hill around mile 16 or so don't know what a hill is like. They should go for a run in southwest Ohio. I have a few complaints. At the expo when I was picking up my race packet, I overheard some other runner say that they ran out of safety pins for the bibs. They didn't mention it to me when they handed me the packet. I could have woken up in the morning and freaked out finding no pins in the packet. I managed to find somebody who had a stash. Also, the goody bag was not so good. I've run small half-marathons with better give-aways. The t-shirt really was pretty cheap. When I finished the race (and I was by no means toward the back of the pack), they had already run out of the Mylar blankets. I was freezing and had nothing to warm me up. The race itself pretty much made up for the previously mentioned shortcomings. The crowds are great and the finish is downhill and lively.

A marathon to make Ohio proud.

1. I ran a very satisfying race on a nearly perfect day for racing, so my critique does come with a rose-colored glasses bias. But, Columbus does get the credit for scheduling at a time in Ohio that has a reasonable chance for good weather, but stacks it up against Chicago and New York. Columbus hit the weather jackpot this year. 2. The run through sorority row that was new for this year was a bust. After the run through the downtown I was looking forward to the OSU version of Wellesley around mile 15. Nothing. Nobody. WAKE THE GIRLS UP NEXT YEAR! 3. The gear bus loading was a bit hectic, with one person running the show. But in general the starting line area was well organized and the race started on time. 4. The mile markers were well marked and seemed accurate according to my Garmin. I still missed three of them somehow. 5. The aid stations were well stocked and had water and Gatorade in different-colored cups. They were also fairly consistent in having the Gatorade in the front and water in the back. 6. This is a fairly flat but not completely flat marathon like some of the bike trail marathons. There is still a bit of a climb in the second half of the course that took its toll on most of us. This is no means a hill like in the Flying Pig or the Road Runner, but it is noticeable that late in the race. 7. The new section of the course in Upper Arlington was a very nice addition to the race. Almost every intersection had a good number of folks cheering the runners along and responding to the OH-IO chant. 8. This race does not have an associated relay. I am sure they take a financial hit by leaving out the relay option, but it makes the second half of the marathon a lot more pleasant for the runners. I really appreciated that late in the race! 9. The medal was very nice this year and the goody bag was fine. Nothing special. 10. The course is well shaded by buildings downtown and trees in the neighborhoods. 11. The half-marathon runners stay with the marathon for nearly their entire race, just like in Cleveland. By running even splits I was slowly engulfed and passed by the half-marathon crowd, particularly as they picked things up the last two miles of their race. It is very important keep in a rhythm even as the flow of the race seems to be moving past. 12. Bottom line: If I ever want to try to run a PR marathon again in the State of Ohio, it will be at the Columbus Marathon.

great new course

It doesn't get any better than this. A great course; not pancake flat like Chicago, but not hilly. There are lots of gradual ups and downs that are actually good for the legs. The highest point comes at mile 20 and from there gravity helps you bring it home. Especially in the final quarter-mile, there's a nice downhill chute. For those who are looking around, the course is very scenic and diverse - statehouse, governor's mansion (with governor outside!), Ohio State campus, beautiful tree-lined residential neighborhoods, upscale urban streets. The field is about 10,000, a good size, big enough to be competitive but not so big that the start or the course gets congested. Runners seemed to respect the pace signs at the start. Nice, wide, smooth streets. Excellent support - lots of aid stations, very well manned. A favorite touch: "Thunderstruck" by AC/DC blasting at the start. The course change, cutting out a long chunk of High Street, was a big improvement.

Great Race

Five stars across the board, since this is my first marathon. The medal is the least of my concerns, after finishing 26.2. To be honest, I can't even tell you what the thing says apart from being round. This was my first marathon (bib 4084) and I am now intimately familiar with the "WALL" that everyone has been talking about. Mine occurred at mile 22, and no matter how hard I tried to go to my "Happy Place," it didn't work. FORGET THE MEDAL; I JUST WANTED TO FINISH - AND FINISH I DID, WITH MY DAUGHTER ON MY SHOULDER. "Above The Best."

half-marathon runner

This was well organized and fun marathon. The fans were the best. In my whole 13.1 miles I probably only took two steps where I didn't hear someone cheering. It was a little crowded, I was trying to beat 1:45, and I had a lot of runner traffic to contend with.

Well Organized, Great Race for a PR

Good, fast course for a PR; I actually qualified for Boston. There are slight hills, but nothing hard and the hills probably provided good variation for the legs. The t-shirts were great and getting a Nike sack bag was a pleasant surprise. I ran the entire race with the 3:40 pace group; the leaders knew the course and were fun to run with and definitely were a reason I qualified for Boston. Columbus is also a great city for a weekend trip. Overall, I would definitely recommend this race if you are looking for a PR or to qualify for Boston.

Not bad. Hills were tough. Just OK.

This was my 15th marathon, and 1st Columbus. Gear check was a disaster. One truck, one person - totally overwhelmed. I lost my bib, and there was no help desk to help solve the problem. The first 13 miles fast and flat. The last 13.2? Hills. Long, turning, gradual hills. Much, much tougher than anticipated. The final .2 miles are excellent. Crowds were good for a smaller marathon. NO Mylar plastic wraps were available when I finished, under 4 hours. That's bad. Good medal, but a cheesy ribbon came with it. But overall, I liked the race. I had a great time. Stay at the Drury Inn. Fantastic people there, and they opened breakfast early for runners.

Fast Course, Beautiful Weather

I demolished my PR by 14 minutes on this course, so I am slightly biased. Pros: Fast and interesting course. Well stocked and staffed water and aid stations. Good spectators; I had lots cheering for me by my team shirt (from the the cross-country team that I help coach). Nice t-shirt. Great finish at the end, taking you downhill and through an arch of balloons. Cons: Expo was overly crowded. They had more area to expand but didn't making it an unpleasant experience. Merchandise was decidedly second rate. Many runners commented that the previous sponsor had better clothes, etc. Finish set up and "herding" made going back for more food/water hard for runners. The 3:40 pace leaders went out CRAZY FAST. I was lucky, but I know a number who did not make Boston because of them.

Fun, mostly flat/fast. George the pacer was great.

I ran it yesterday and we had great weather. I thought it was well organized and the course was relatively easy. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was that there were several bottlenecks on narrow streets, which caused runners to bunch up. Otherwise, it was very enjoyable. I qualified for Boston yesterday and a lot of it is due to George the pacer (for 3:30). I didn't get a chance to thank him - so, thanks, George!!!!!

Definitely a PR course

Good: Flat and fast course. Bad: Water stations were not long enough. Medal sucked, but who cares? I ain't gonna walk around with it. The t-shirt is a bit dull. Overall, a great course to run for a BQ or PR. I finished it in 3:17, nearly 10 minutes off my PR!

Flat & fast; do it if you want a PB or BQ

This race exceeded my expectations. Yes, the medal as a previous commenter mentioned is pretty cheesy. Personally I don't like the shirt material (it is a performance material, but still eh). Start is crowded due to combining it with the half-marathon; however, it is more than manageable. BUT the course is very flat as evidenced by the average finish time and times skewed to the low end. Course is well supported, with hydration stations every mile (more races should do that), and gels included at least at couple of locations. Runs through several nice neighborhoods (Bexley, German Village, Upper Arlington, Grandview, etc.). Plenty of spectators and lots of music (actually pretty nice). Post-race area is crowded, but has adequate food and drink. Plenty of parking close by (although some gouging). Weather's likely to be good for running. Race doesn't sell out immediately - no lottery, no exorbitant fees. All in all, positive. I'd do it again. Again, looking for a PB or BQ time, this might be the ticket. I'll return.

Great course but the event needs improvement

My second year running the half-marathon, and number 11 for 2008. The half had 6,014 runners while the full had 3,867. Enjoyed the new course in 2008, which was mostly flat (except miles 11-13) with moderate elevation. It lacked adequate signage directing runners to seeding areas and mile makers. But there were plenty of volunteers and fluids on the course. Among OH marathons, Flying Pig has the most runners, while Cleveland, Akron, and Columbus have similar number of runners. Easy online registration with an average expo, but there's an easy process for packet pick up. They need to improve the medal, marathon shirt, and marathon merchandise. The main sponsor dominates the medal and shirt, which in 2008 looks like a cheap, gray, cotton shirt, despite its Nike Dri-FIT label. Gear check and gear recovery both need improvement too - along with the self-seeding areas - before this events earns a first-class classification.

Nice Course Change

I've run this marathon 7 times and really liked the course change this year. Ran a 7-minute PR. Spending less time on High Street and having the route go through Grandview are big pluses. So I'd give the course and organization 5 stars. The spectators seemed a bit down this year but not sure if that was due to the course change or just my perception. Weather is usually good this time of year in Columbus and this year was fantastic. So congratulations to the organizers and the City of Columbus for pulling off another great race!

Good marathon; could be great with few improvement

My 10th marathon overall, and 1st Columbus. Runner-friendly course - I kept waiting for the hill at mile 20 but never felt it. A couple of dicey spots where we suddenly got "squeezed," which caused some traffic jams. Spectators were good in spots, mostly in the first half. The second half got lonely at points. Enjoyed the bands along the way. Didn't check gear because there was no extra tag with the number provided, and everyone given same goody bag, so it was hard to find yours in the mix that way. Volunteers at fluid stations were great - I easily knew which were handing out water and which Gatorade. Almost had a collision with a car, even with traffic cops at the intersection - UNACCEPTABLE!! If you can't guarantee runner safety - CLOSE THE ROAD! All in all, a good marathon that I would consider running again. After all, I did PR yesterday!!!

Great marathon! Fast and flat!!

This is the third time I have run this marathon. It is a top-notch race all the way. This year, nothing could have been improved on. Spectators were great, weather was great and the volunteers were as always superb! I can't stand it when people whine and complain about little things, so I wont. But... the t-shirt given to us was pretty lame. Come on... a t-shirt???I have gotten better at a 5K. Might be nice to reconsider this and give tech shirts. Loved the bag, though - very nice. The expo is a little small, but, really, who cares? I think Columbus is a great town-but a lot of folks in town don't even know there is a marathon going on. Maybe get a little more press so the town might embrace the event a little more; after all, this brings a nice chunk of revenue into the city and a lot of potential advertisement. Give the sport of running the respect it deserves, Columbus! And... I fell coming into the homestretch - around the last corner.I want to thank the man who held his hand out to me and helped me up. I made it for my Boston qualifying time, and I'm sure this helping hand up was one of the reasons why. With your own finish line in sight, it's hard even to notice anyone else. This kind man noticed, paused, and helped me up. Thank you and God bless you!

It's alright...

I finally finished this blasted race, which is most likely why my feelings towards it are not the happiest. Columbus and I have been fighting it out for the last few years. I was glad to have finished... but the medal... seriously... I thought they were joking. Thanks, Nationwide (please note my sarcasm).

Well done, but disappointed by medals

I am a native to Columbus, and have run the marathon twice now. I think the organization and course are fantastic; however, I was very disappointed with the race shirt and medal this past year. They are both a walking advertisement for Nationwide, which happen to mention the Columbus Marathon in small print below. I plan to run this race again because my family and friends are in the area, and I love running through my city. If I were from out of town, though, I would be put off; they could do a much better job with getting the university involved and toning down the Nationwide involvement. Several miles of the marathon go right through campus, but in my years of being a student at OSU, I never once saw any indication that the marathon was happening. Contrast that to running Boston, where the local weather report on race day speaks in terms of mile markers instead of time of day. The whole city is involved. I am well aware that Boston is a much, much bigger race, but if they want this race to be big, they need to do a better job of getting the rest of the city involved.

Nice, but a few improvements

Overall the Columbus Marathon was nice. The course is flat. The fans were great. The technical running shirt and expo were good. The first part is scenic with nice shade. The second half is a little bit more boring and sunny. I wish the first part was at the end, especially with the warmer temperatures. Overall no complaints about the course. The start was frustrating because my Garmin never did find a signal and I wasn't the only person with problems. I was a little disappointed with the medal. I saw great medals in the shape of Ohio from years past. The medal is all about the runner. The medal appeared to be an advertisement for Nationwide. The technical shirt was fine with the sponsorship information, but not the medal. My other problem was at the end. I could not find the runners bag pickup and spent time looking for it. It wasn't easy to find.

first marathon

The course is advertised as flat. If you live in NW Ohio, you will notice the hill at miles 16 and 18, and then the last 4 miles of incline. (We in NW Ohio know what flat really is. =)) It was my first marathon. The race organization was perfect for me: I knew where to go and felt well taken care of the entire race. The flyover was great at the start. I wish they had more bathrooms on the course for miles 6, 7 and 8; I had to wait 4 people-deep in line. I wish they could encourage more of the students on campus to come out and cheer.

Great race/any finishers certificates??

It was a well-organized race and very reasonably priced. Course is pretty flat and was good for my first marathon. Needed a 3:10 to qualify to Boston, but it got really tough around mile 18-19 and only held on to run a 3:26. Does anyone know if we are getting finisher's certificates? I still have not received one.

3:30 Pace Group ROCKS!!

Course: Other than a small hill between mile 18-19 and the nice downhill cruise to the finish, any incline change is gradual. It's not the most scenic course I've ever run, but it's reasonably flat; a good PR or BQ course. However, there are places on the course where it gets pretty crowded and tight - Bexley, High St. until the half-marathoners turn off. Therefore, I don't see where this course could comfortably handle a larger field (currently limited to 10K for all the races). Organization: From this perspective, Columbus was the best race I've ever run. Cannot say enough positive things about the folks at the information booth at the expo. Spoke with a couple people at length about the race and the best viewing spots for spectators. Also, as we were wandering around the finish line area the day before the race, a fellow who was helping set up came over and answered any question I had about the race. He went over and above. Also, the race map showed that the first water stop was after the 2 mile-mark. However, during the race, they had it set up at the 1 mile-mark. Given the prediction of warm temperatures that day, it sounds like the race organizers made the decision to move that water stop up and get fluids to the people quicker. That's just a smart decision. Fans: This is my one area of disappointment but I don't think this was a "Columbus thing" per se. I've noticed this at other medium-sized to larger races as well. As more people get involved in the sport, it seems many spectators will cheer only for the runner or runners they know. Otherwise, they don't cheer. Pretty strange to be running by a large group of people and only hear a buzz of, "Do you see him/her yet?" The best fans cheer for ALL the runners. I will say, however, that the fans in the residential area around the 20 mile-mark, while small in number, were large in voice. Thank you so much. It is appreciated. Finally, my sincerest thanks goes out to Jay, George and anyone who ran with me in the 3:30 pace group. Jay and George were absolutely top-notch in laying down the pace. We went out a touch fast, but stayed consistent throughout the race. If you need a 3:30 for Boston: do your training and run this race with this pace group (led by Jay and George) and you will succeed. Pure and simple. Thanks again, guys, for helping "Big Dave" get to Boston.

Great race!

In response to the comments from the disgruntled walker below: If you are traveling in a car, do you not yield to faster vehicles? It is not a question of convenience, but of safety, and the same rule applies for footraces. Walkers in this marathon had sponsorship support from Prevention; they were allowed to start an hour before the runners; and they were vocally cheered for along the way. Get over it! My only suggestion would be to create different color bibs for the full and half marathoners, as this provides an easy way to make sure one has taken the correct turns to follow the full course. However, there was ample signage on course, as well as recorded announcements, to make sure no one took wrong turns. This was a fantastic race, and I'll be back next year!

Well... the weather was nice

Flat course. Nice crowds. I walked some and ran some. Walkers are second-class citizens. Walkers made up a HUGE population of this marathon but were told to "get out of the way" for the runners? I paid my money. I should enjoy the road no matter who wants to share it. I'll stick to my Flying Pig in Cincy.

Great race (even if it was a bad day for me...)

Packet pickup, the race itself, and the finish line all ran like clockwork. Race course was good (although running through the suburban neighborhood - miles 19-22 or so - was a little dispiriting), and the fans were far better than I expected. Many thanks to the 50-something lady with the giant sparkle pom-poms around mile 23. Unfortunately the race was a miserable one for me, but people like her got me through to the end, even if I was way behind my goal....

You should run Columbus!

You have to love this race. It's flat, it's fast, it's supported by great fans and great organizers, and it may have the best finish line for a mid-size marathon. With apologies to NYC, Twin Cities, Jacksonville, South Bend, and Raleigh (all of which are great marathons), Columbus is the only race I have repeated, and I intend to keep coming back as long as I am able. You should run this race!

I couldn't have asked for more!

Columbus 2007 was my first marathon, but I have been with my husband at all of his 10 marathons across the Midwest. Not only was this race well executed, but the course was beautiful and the crowd support was incredible as well. When you consider all of these factors, in addition to the logistical ease of the race, it provided an incredible first-marathon experience for me. (As for the hills, we live in Columbia, MO, so the hills felt more like gentle inclines. I didn't even notice some of them.) There were lots of memorable moments along the way, most from the spectators creatively and genuinely encouraging even me - a 4:19 marathoner! At one point, a little guy who couldn't have been older than 6 gave me five and said, "Thanks for running our marathon." WOW! I heard those words over and over again in my head. The day was complete when my husband (who ran a 2:56) met me at mile 25 and got to run the last mile with me and see me finish. We wept tears of joy at the end of the finisher's chute. Thanks to all of the volunteers, all of the spectators and the City of Columbus. I will forever be endeared to your city.

Great course, Well organized

This was my first time running Columbus. I am a local gal, so I was prepared for the long haul up High Street. Honestly, after running Akron last fall, I was relieved to have such a flat course. I don't know why anyone would complain about hills on this route. The crowd seemed to thin out during the last half. I expected more support through the campus area. It was frustrating trying to maneuver around the walkers and half-marathoners but I guess there's no way around that. I have to mention that the poster is awesome! The post-race area was like another expo! I wish I had felt like walking around afterwards, but my family said they enjoyed it while waiting. Overall, this is a well-organized race with a nearly flat course. I will run this one again.

Beautiful marathon but it is not a PR course

Columbus is a beautiful city and a great place to run a marathon. Although the course was not extremely challenging, it was not a flat course as advertised. There were lots of gradual hills throughout, especially in the 2nd half. I guess if I had mentally prepared myself for all the hills, it would have been better. I just thought it would be a course similar to Chicago. Twin Cities is a much faster course than this one too. It was very well organized and everyone was very friendly and helpful.

Columbus - I'd recommend it!

Being from Texas and training through the summer in the heat, I was hoping for some good, cold fall weather for this one. Unfortunately, the temps were above average and bright sunshine, making for great spectating, but a tad too warm, especially the last hour. Expo and organization were good, logistics were easy - I stayed at the Hyatt and walked over to the start line. First half of the course is great - nice neighborhoods and lots of shade and crowd support. Having to negotiate through the walkers and half-marathoners was not ideal, but overall not too bad. As others have said, the High Street section seems to go on forever. After the halfway point, the crowd support also seemed to thin out, and the last few miles had more hills than I expected. Afterwards, I took advantage of the free massage tables, after a bit of a wait. I didn't really hang around the post-race area, although it seemed to be nicely put together. Overall, I would recommend this race for someone who wants a good mid-sized fall marathon with simple logistics and a fairly flat (but not Chicago-flat!) course. As far as changes, I'd beef up the expo a bit more, and would try and break up the long section on High St. somehow.

My first marathon-great introduction

This marathon was my first marathon and I was impressed to say the least. Mind you, since this is my first marathon and the obviously my only one, I can't compare it to any other marathon but organization was superb. I hear stories about a long wait to get you race packet but I had no problems on Saturday afternoon. It was quick and without any hassle. The expo was good. Lots of interesting vendors and lots of people. I was amazed at the people coming out to support the marathon. I would have been sleeping the the early morning hours but they were out there cheering everybody on. It felt like they were cheering me on! There were plenty of port a potties. No problem there. Plenty of water station with Gatorade and water. I certainly didn't get dehydrated although it was hot. The course went through some nice neighborhood with some of the nicest, supportive, cheering people. There was plenty of fluids and food after the finish line as well as some music entertainment. All in all, I will treasure this marathon for the good times and good memories!

Nicely organized race, plenty of fluids

This was second time I've done the marathon. Expo was better than 2005. No problem with packet pickup. Long stretch up High Street not too fun - no shade and higher temps affected me. One of the later runners in - no food at the end except for some apples and Cheez-Its. Could improve on that. My hometown Richmond Marathon always has plenty of post-race food for 5+-hour marathoners. My only complaint was with the Hampton Inn hotel I stayed at, which was referred to by the marathon website. Staff was strict about checkout at noon, which caused some logistical problems. Also, while my rental car was in their valet service, it was broken into. The hotel staff was not apologetic and I had to ask them pointedly to get my $29 I spent on parking refunded. I was exhausted after running the marathon, and having to deal with police reports, etc., right after finishing was not fun. Please do NOT stay at this hotel if you have a car.

Great experience, hard to top

This was my first marathon and based on what I experienced I think it will be hard to beat. Thank you to all the volunteers and law enforcement for making this such a great experience, you guys are first class and were very helpful. The Expo was good, although I thought it could have been bigger. I had heard that there were great bargains on clothing, but I did not find this to be the case. The support from the crowd was excellent. The course is relatively flat and I loved running through the neighborhoods. Great support from the people in the community, thank you very much, your support of this event helped make it a success. Governor Strickland, Mayor Coleman, and Gordon Gee President of The Ohio State University were seen on the course cheering on everyone. The course layout allowed my wife to see me at the start, finish, 10, and 13 mile marks. Her report was favorable and it was not hard to find me at the finish. This year's weather was unusually hot, and the fluids on the course (although plentiful) were not cold. The finish was great, you come up a slight grade and at the top you can see the finish, cheering crowds, music, it was amazing. It's a great experience and I will run it again.

Almost Perfect

I can't believe that so many people are complaining about hills and walkers and Red Cross trucks cutting them off. This was a great race from expo to finish line. Columbus is a beautiful city and they seemed to pull out all the stops in order to make this race as good as it could be. No one can control the size of the streets. The first 4 miles was on an 8 lane road and congestion never seemed to be a problem. That was one of the best parts. By that time you would be well past any walkers. I can understand complaining if they ran out of water on such a warm day but even that was never an issue and I was no where near the front of the race. All in all I would rate this race as just slightly below perfect.

Great flat race

This was a great race and I am really glad I came and ran. Coming from the northeast I found the so called 'hills' the Midwesterners were talking about to be REALLY EASY. I wouldn't really classify any of the rises and falls as 'hills'. Most of the course is run through very scenic neighborhoods, especially Bexley, German Village, and The OSU. If you want to qualify for Boston, I would think this would be right up there as one of the ones to try. The fans were great, the organization was superb and most of the Cleveland Indian fans took my Red Sox chants along the way pretty well. If you are in Columbus in October, look this one up, you won't be let down.

Over-all good race/ great size

Good race, there are hills but none are too bad, the ones after mile 20 were unexpected. The start and walkers became a problem for me on the narrow streets with cars parked on both sides as I was forced to walk and dodge around people. I missed Boston by 3 mins, and I did not need it. Also at about mile 22 I had to a stop and had to walk through a water stop as a Red Cross truck pulled out in front of me and went through the water stop at slower than walking pace, again something that should have never happened and cost me valuable time. I should have been an additional Boston qualifier for the marathon, but was hindered by these marathon organizational problems.

The place to go to PR

First of all, anyone complaining about hills should try running in the northeast. There were slight, gradual inclines, yes, but nothing I'd call a 'hill'. In fact, the slight rises and falls were what makes this course as fast as it is, for a course that is completely flat would require the use of the same leg muscles. Excellent organization, great expo (except for some vitamin company whose mailing list I got on and keeps harassing me), and great crowd support! Cons - coming in from out of town, I was underwhelmed with the city in general (restaurants near the finish line were closed on race day? - a 75 degree day with abundant sunshine and bars/restaurants with outdoor patios were not open - this confused me); also sharing the course with half marathoners and walkers was not ideal. I'd do the race again but not before I travel to several more.

Thank You Columbus

This was my 2nd Marathon (Detroit last year) and I was very impressed with Columbus. The course was good with the exception of that long stretch down High street but they kind of make up for it with a really nice downhill finish and a good selection of post race food. The temperature was warmer than I hoped for but I have to give them credit here for having plenty of water and Gatorade the entire way. The Clif shots were great too. I would never run the same marathon twice but I would encourage anybody to try this one once. Definitely worth the trip.

Hard to Beat

Having just finished my 5th Columbus I continue to be impressed. Many people complain that the course is not as flat as advertised. This is true. But it is only moderately challenging as marathons go. And the course is fairly interesting except for what I call the High Street Slog. This year, the one problem from last year, long lines at packet pickup, was fixed. All the volunteers were great. Of all the Marathons I have run this one has the most stress free logistics, most hotels are reasonably priced, good quality, and within short walking distance of the start and finish. The Expo was pretty limited this year, but that's not the attraction for me. Parking on race day is easy to find. On course the abundant fluid stations and nutrition supplies are amazing, the Cliff Pace teams are great, the runners, even at a 4:00hr pace are well spread out, so you are never tripping over other runners. As far as the size of the field is concerned, this is just about right. Walkers need to follow the signs and Move Right!

Very Impressed

Thought the 2007 Columbus Marathon was outstanding! Expo was very well organized and easy to pick up your race packet. The hotels were all within easy walking distance from start/finish. The volunteers were very enthusiastic and there were plenty of aid stations. They had one of the nicest post race areas and food/drink selections I have seen. The course is mostly flat and there are only a few areas without spectators. Only minor negative was the part of the course where you caught up with the walkers and the different pace half runners connected. Staying on the left hand side of the course helped avoid this. A great marathon experience.

Well Organized, Good Race, Great Location

This was my first time running the Columbus Marathon and overall I found it very enjoyable. I stayed at the Drury Suites which was within walking distance of everything I needed (i.e. expo, dining, start, finish, etc)... perfect. The race itself is very well organized with the one exception that after about an hour into the marathon the runners caught up with the walkers and the course became very crowded and congested causing many runners to almost come to a stop or start swerving. Honestly, I also wasn't paying great attention (... not looking for or expecting a mass of walkers) and was not aware that the half and full walk events started an hour before the race and that we would eventually catch up with them. The stretch on N. High street is more of an incline than advertised. It's not steep, but it is an incline and it stretches for miles. Enjoyed running by The OSU stadium, plenty of aid stations (...actually too many), and a great downhill finish and finish area. Columbus is also a good spectator course as my family came out and was able to see me in three different areas with little maneuvering. Not sure if I'll ever do this one again, there are a lot of marathons out there to choose from, but I'd recommend it to anyone that prefers a high end medium size marathon.

Having run the Columbus marathon the last 17 years you have to be doing something right to keep me coming back. The organization throughout the whole race was great as usual and I really like the final hill to the finish. One complaint, no water at the finish just Gatorade, Coke and coffee. Thanks again and see you next year!!

Great course, huge crowds, awesome people

My second marathon. I'm comparing it to my first race, where there aren't big crowds (Sunburst, in northern IN). The finish was pretty insane - trying to find family members after was impossible. Some of the roads got narrow at times, but it wasn't bad. The website said no iPods, but there were tons of people wearing them. Great weather, great support, and plenty to drink.

Great 1st marathon in my old hometown

I definitely have the 'bug' to do another and will repeat next year. Wish the whole and half were staggered; miles 1-5 and 6-8 were very congested for me. Loved the crowd. My son, a runner and OSU student, ran several parts of the 2nd half and down to the finish, about 10 miles, to support his mom; that was priceless to see him in 4 different locations. Was not prepared for the 6mi gradual incline up High St and the several grades up and down for the back half of the course; those did a lot of people in and slowed me way down. I will do more hill work to prepare for next year. I don't agree with the 'flat' adjective. Having grades to run up and then down are hard when you're facing 9+ miles, so be ready, newcomers! It was a wonderful accomplishment from my 1st day of training to crossing the finish line. Spectator support was out of this world....thanks to all who cheered for everyone.

great experience

The volunteers did a terrific job! Gotta love them. Plenty to drink and 2 stops with Clif shots. They had different colored cups for water and Gatorade. The crowds were energetic. There was always cheering when you needed it. The course is much better the first half. The second half-some manageable hills, less cheering and less scenic. However when you are finishing-AWESOME! People line both sides of the street and yell like crazy!!!

Finally Got Around To Running Columbus...

This marathon had pros and cons. The expo was fine and I appreciated no waiting and no lines to get your packet and shirt. The technical shirts are nice but the advice for women to 'size up' was misleading. I ordered a large instead of a medium and it's way too big. It was a beautiful morning to start the race and the helicopter flyover was very cool. The first few miles through Bexley were beautiful. German Village was fun until you dump out onto High St. Geez, what a long tedious road for miles and miles on an uphill incline. I have to agree with J.B. from Mason: This course is NOT flat. Granted, no big hills but one long incline after another in the second half. The temps were too warm for my taste after about mile 17-18, especially with hardly any shade, but you had to love those frequent and well-stocked water stops. I made the mistake however of not using one of the many port-o-johns available in the early part of the race and paid for that mistake when there wasn't a single port-o-john to use from mile 19 to the finish. Not sure what was up with that. The spectators were great along the way and the bands helped pass the time. One note to the band at Mile 24 though: PLEASE, no 'Chariots of Fire' at mile 24. That song is best reserved for Mile 26 when you can actually see the finish line. At mile 24 I felt like I was running about as fast as the guys in the movie in slow motion! It's funny now; not so much then. I rather liked the 10,000 person size of this one. Definitely had a different and more personal feel than the big boys like Chicago, New York and Marine Corp. This marathon is every bit as nice as the other Ohio marathons, Cleveland, Cincinnati Pig and Dayton Air Force. Hats off to the race organizers for all their hard work. I enjoyed the experience overall and was happy to check Columbus off my list of marathons I've been meaning to do. One last thing; with all due respect to Nationwide, I still consider this 'The Columbus Marathon', not the 'Nationwide Better Health Marathon'. That said, thanks for a great event!

I'll be back next year!

I thought this race was fantastic. Organization was superb, and crowd support was good except in the Short North (mostly a business district) and Upper Arlington (I saw one lady on a lawn chair and that was it). The course was beautiful, except for parts of The OSU campus and parts of High Street, and not too challenging elevation-wise. I had a crummy day that involved puking in the Olentangy and finishing an hour off my goal time because of stomach cramps, but people cheered for me anyway. The medical staff followed me into the family reunion area and checked me out. They were great. I will come back next year for my revenge and am already looking forward to it. My favorite memories: The man in the wizard hat at the 'magical mile' 20.6 and the little kids in German Village asking for high fives.

great Race

This was my 3rd time running Columbus and I always have a great experience, the spectators are great especially when you wear your name on your shirt and the people yell your name. Cons- need more people to be at water stations, when I got to one of the water tables my kids and husband were handing out water because there was not enough people helping.

Gotta love that downhill finish

Wonderful day for a marathon, however, warmer than usual. The first half was plentiful with water stops and port a potties, however, not as many in the later stages of the marathon where they are needed more. The first part of the course was beautiful but after mile 12 up High Street until the finish not much excitment. Crowd support could have been better throughout but the times I was given shout outs were when I really needed them. The elevation chart is deceiving. The course is for the most part flat but the ups and downs and long inclines are what get you in the end. Overall, I had a great time. I PR'd by 14 minutes. Gotta love the pacers. Had a wonderful experience traveling to this marathon. Would highly suggest it to others.

4 Stars

All in all, I would recommend this marathon. Pros: Not too small, but not too big. Weather is usually good. Course is good, as it gives family several opportunities to see you. Lots of water stations. Ample parking by start. Medal is better than in previous years. Nice selection of food. Coke Zero hit the spot. Cons. After running this for the sixth time, I am still struck by the fact that they call this a "flat" course. I guess if they keep saying it each year, people will just agree with the organizers. Granted the rises are not steep, but there are many gradual rises starting at mile 16 to about mile 22, some at the beginning as well. No race-day packet pickup. No end-of-race party (immediately following the event).

I had a great time

I ran this marathon with a friend to get him in under 3:30. I accomplished my mission getting him in in exactly 3:29:45. We ran together for 25 miles before i picked up the pace, finishing in 3:27.45. The course is hillier than I expected. I think I could have run about a 3:22 if I had run alone. That is about 6 minutes slower than Erie, which I ran 6 weeks earlier. Overall, great marathon.

Great course, well organized, good crowd support

This was my third marathon and I chose it because it was billed as a relatively flat course. It absolutely was. There are a few inclines in the second half of the course (mile 17), but if you have done any hill work, you should be able to manage them. The expo was well-organized. The crowd support was great - not continuous, but enough to buck you up when you needed it. It winds through several different neighborhoods in Columbus. Others have commented on the crowds - I ran towards the back of the pack and it wasn't an issue, and when we were with the 1/2 marathoners, the streets were wide enough to accommodate. Towards the end, we only had half the road, but there were fewer of us. I would have liked more pre-race communications by e-mail. All in all, a well-run, great race.

Skip if slower than 6 hours

It was a beautiful day and a great course. But terrible if you ran slower than 6 hours. They give you 7 hours to finish but close the course at a 6 hour pace. I had a cop chasing me for about 2 miles. They pulled up mile markers when I got to 18. I had to walk on busted sidewalks or grass for the last 8 too. If it wasn't for a guy giving out Gatorade in his front yard, i would have gone all the way with just 1 water stop from 18 to 26.2. They need to keep the course open at a 7 hour pace if they let you finish at a 7 hour pace. Or let us start an hour earlier with the walkers. what could it hurt? I just felt a little disrespected and discouraged.

Loved it!

This was a wonderful, well organized race. Beautiful course through Columbus neighborhoods and I have never seen so many port-o-potties: there was never a line for them. Finish line was great and I've also never seen so many treats at the finish line!

Fairly flat marathon - manageable size

This was 31st marathon and 6th time running Columbus. They seemed to have learned from Chicago's fiasco and made sure they had plenty of water and volunteers on hand. It was a warm sunny day with highs into the 70s during the race, but the water stations were frequent and had plenty of water. The course is mostly flat, though the second half has a few little ups and downs to it. No mountains, but enough to make the second half a little more difficult than the first. The course is for the most part scenic, running through some nice Columbus neighborhoods. It's all paved roads except for about 100 meters on bricks in the fourth or fifth mile. They start both the marathon and the half marathon together which means that it can get a little crowded, however the first three miles are on Broad Street, which offers plenty of room. The spectators are plentiful and vocal. The course is not lined with people the whole way, but there is more than ample support for the crowd. There are also several bands out on the course for your entertainment. I give this marathon high marks. Since the change of management, they seem to be more dedicated to quality, while the previous administration was concerned only with quantity.

A beautiful day for a beautiful race

This was my 4th marathon and I really enjoyed it. The first half of the marathon was my favorite. Absolutely gorgeous neighborhoods with plenty of shade. The mature trees were spectacular as they were turning colors. The fans were great...they were friendly and encouraging and there never seemed to be a place without fans. Lots of entertainment on the way too. The expo was pretty good and well organized. The stretch on High St. got to be a little long and there was relatively no shade on the second part of the course. However, lots of water stops which were nice. I wish there would have been some food on the course (bananas or oranges) but they did hand out gel at miles 7 and 17. Overall, a great experience and I would definitely run this one again!

Awesome marathon. Beautiful course.

Loved this marathon. The weather was unseasonably warm and absolutely beautiful. Lots of water stations - even near the back they never ran out of water, gels or Gatorade. Really nice medals too! The course was fairly flat, but with enough hills just to keep it interesting. Would definitely do it again!

Great midwest race if your not doing Chi-town

I did this race about 3-4 years ago and had a great time. Like others have said, it is a fun mid-sized marathon. The course goes through some interesting neighborhoods, the downtown, and through the University District (go Buckeyes!). Be sure to wear your scarlet and gray to this one. I plan on doing it again this year as I was late signing up for Chicago. Who needs the crowds anyways?

Excellent Marathon

This was my second marathon, having run the Jacksonville Marathon in 2002. It's a fantastic course for anyone who is running their first marathon or is looking for a fast time. I was hoping to qualify for Boston, which I did here, finishing in 3:06. The course is really interesting - the run through Bexley early in the race shows some amazing houses, and there's also a large portion of the race run through downtown. There is a bit of a dead stretch around miles 18-21, but compared to others I've run, the course is very interesting. There are a decent number of spectators throughout and they're all very enthusiastic. There is a slight incline somewhere along High Street, but it really wasn't bad at all. The only hiccup I had was around mile 8, when the half marathoners rejoined the marathoners. This marked only mile 7 for them, but mile 8 for the marathoners, so all of a sudden I was flying past people and didn't understand why until I realized there were half marathoners with us. I was running at a fast enough pace so that it wasn't too congested, but if you're a middle- to back-of-the-pack runner, I would think it could get pretty congested around this section, which would be compounded by the fact that half of the people are running markedly faster than the other half (the half marathoners). But, certainly not a huge deal. I'll be back next year. I'd definitely recommend this race.

The crowd was very inspiring.

This was my first marathon and those who told me that it would be a good first marathon for anyone made a believer out of me. The course was flat and the crowd was really into it throughout the whole race. The crowd really came in handy when I hit mile 20, where the wall is said to occur. I liked the signs that were posted that said, "Don't let the wall slow you down." I finished in 4:00:58. I also learned that all the training that I did without a crowd helped me at the race when I saw the crowd. I can't thank them enough for helping me accomplish my goal of finishing my first marathon. The aid stations were very well organized by having a section for water and Gatorade and directing runners and walkers to go to get what they needed. Once again, a great marathon, and I recommend it for anyone who wants to run a marathon for the first time.

It was alright

Being from Columbus is nice because I can drive downtown to the start and park in a decent amount of time. The course is fine, it was much easier than the Airforce in Dayton. My biggest complaint was that the race sucks for anyone finishing the race in longer than five hours. I hit the 20-mile marker in 4:30 and the police were behind me and another lady and getting ready to direct traffic. From then on, I never saw another mile marker or stocked aid station. It was a DNF race for me, and these concerns do not affect most people, but there were still a good number of people out there and it sucked for us at the end with no support. I will give it a go again in 2007, but I have not had much luck with this race yet.

Great course, fans, weather; disappointing expo

First, the minor negatives: - Packet pickup was not very well organized. - At start, spectators were allowed to amble about in the road and get in the way of marathoners. - Course was crowded around Mile 8 marker, where marathon and half-marathon came back together. - Music was sometimes excessively loud, especially one set of speakers near Mile 21 marker. Now, the over-arching positives: - Fantastic, scenic, fast course: a fair number of hills, but all were manageable. - Great fan support. - Course allowed fans to cheer at multiple locations. - Good price: not just the race entry, but hotels as well. - Good race swag: tech shirt was simple but high-quality (and easy to spot! - bright yellow). I think the best endorsement marathoners can give is that they would do the race again. I would absolutely choose Columbus again, and recommend it to friends.

Great race, could be greater

Perfect weather, awesome flyover at the start, supportive volunteers and the course - while perhaps not as flat as one might think by the "Our World is Flat" mantra - was quite PRable (and, in fact, was for me). My quibble, as others have mentioned, was with the packet pickup. Also, the pasta dinner was somewhat lame in its own right, given the price, and was even more so because bottled water wasn't offered. Soda just doesn't cut it. And gear-check bags, along with a better-organized checking system, would have been nice.

A Really Good Race

I have to compliment the race director and his entire committee for an exceptional marathon experience. Highlights: * Great course. Nice variety and well marked. * Frequent and well stocked water stops. * General organization (I did not experience any of the aforementioned issues at expo). I had e-mailed a question shortly before the race, which was answered within 12 hours. * Mostly good fan support throughout but there were areas where you were on your own. * Beautiful city. First-time visit to Columbus - really impressed. * Mayor's enthusiasm at starting line - couldn't help but smile and get jazzed up. * Perfect weather (I know the organizers had no control but they get dinged if the weather's bad, so we might as well give them some credit for when it's good). I was able to establish a substantial PR on this course; it is runner-friendly and I would strongly recommend it to first-timers as well as other experienced runners. I'll be back to run again.

Up there with Chicago

Very nice race. The course is mostly flat and there are a ton of water/Gatorade stops. Also, if I remember correctly, there was a pace clock every mile. The only downside to the race was packet pick-up, which was unorganized, with long lines. Also, the half marathoners start at the same time as the marathoners, which is no problem except that the course is set up so they turn off the marathon course around mile six-ish and then reappear in front of you a mile or two later, so the course gets a little crowded with slow runners. It wasn't so bad that it kept me off my pace (7:25) but it was not the smartest way to do it. Overall, it was a great race that I would highly recommend.

Wonderful Hometown Race

I was very pleased to come back to my hometown to run the Columbus Marathon. The course was great except for a grueling hill on Ackerman Road and the subsequent boring suburban neighborhood, but once I got to Lane Avenue, I had my second wind and enjoyed the final few miles. Great organization, although the expo did leave a little to be desired. The marathon expo was in the Hyatt and there was a separate health and fitness expo in the adjoining convention center, but it was a very long walk in between the two. Nice technical shirts! The women got a black shirt, but who was the bright mind that ordered the men's gold shirts with blue lettering (Michigan colors) in Buckeye territory? Make a better choice next year! Great water/Gatorade stops, which were very frequent. It was nice that they gave out Clif Shots on the course. Also, I ran with the Clif Pace Team, and that was a great experience. The volunteers and Columbus police were wonderful. I also appreciated the bands and radio stations, but wish there had been more music and fans during that boring Upper Arlington neighborhood. The finish was in the Arena District and was very nice. I wasn't very familiar with that area, having moved out of town before the arena and surrounding attractions opened. I appreciated the tasty bagels from Panera, and the medal is the biggest one I have. I would recommend this race to first-timers and experienced marathoners. Just be ready for that big hill!

I really can't say anything negative. It was a super weekend; I got to stay at my sister's house. Excellent marathon

Would highly recommend this marathon to anyone. Great course and spectators. The only two things that could use improvement are: First, I arrived at the expo Saturday afternoon and it was a mess waiting in line to first get your packet and then another line for your chip. What made it worse was that there were no signs telling you what the lines were for. Secondly, I would have loved to get a massage after the marathon, but there was a very long wait. I finished in 3:35, so I know there were many more after me. It appears that since the half marathon people were in there first it bogged down the whole system. Maybe next year you could have a marathon area and a half area. George, the 3:30 pace group leader, was awesome. He was laying down 8-minute miles like a machine. I was with him until 19.5 when my right calf muscle really tightened up. George, if you see this, could you tell me if you were wearing a GPS unit and exactly which one? I have a GPS unit and it is very erratic. You did a great job in your pacing and was disappointed that my calf made me drop out of your group.

Great experience!

Very nice marathon - enthusiastic volunteers at the water stops, great, diverse course, and good number of participants. I echo some of the comments about the expo - it was cumbersome trying to weave your way around to get the t-shirt and goody bag. Would also have liked to have seen more gear for sale (e.g. t-shirts) with the Columbus Marathon 2006 logo. Would do this one again for sure....

Perfect Size, Good Organization (mostly)

This was my first Columbus Marathon, and fourth overall. My goal was to qualify for Boston and I did! My Clif Shot pace leader, Scott, was a fantastic motivator and kept our group on track. Great fans. Not much music though. When I signed up for the marathon I was worried about the lack of a decent website, but then it was redesigned, and we also recieved numerous email updates. I especially enjoyed some of the final email updates! The course did have some slight inclines, and despite the fact that from mile 22-26, those small inclines felt like mountains to me, overall it was a great course. I chose Columbus because I wanted a smaller race, and it definitely met my expectations. The expo was not extremely well organized, but a lot of people commented that it was probably due to the addition of the 1/2 marathon. As a previous reviewer mentioned, the timing was weird at some points because the halfers and marathoners break apart and then come back together, and therefore the mileage was different and the clocks read different times. But if you were looking at the sign, it clearly stated whether it was for the full or 1/2. The finishers' area was too small in my opinion, but I appreciated the friendliness of everyone there! Would I run Columbus again? YES!

Not a good marathon for back-of-the pack....

This was my 12th Marathon and lst in Columbus. It was flat, but I am a slow runner and by the time I got to mile 16 there were no more water stops, no volunteers, no police, no aid stations and no signs saying which direction to go. I couldn't find Mile 17 and finally, in frustration, headed back the way I came toward the city. It was only 4 hours since the race had started for the runners and the whole race had closed up. I was w/ another guy who was in very bad shape, but there was no one to help him or tell us anything. When I did get back to the city I saw runner's headed for the finish line, but I probably only completed 22 of the 26 miles. Don't do this marathon if you are going to be in the back-of-the pack.

Not a good marathon for back-of-the-pack...

This was my first Columbus Marathon. I am a slow and older runner and liked the flat course. However, by mile 16 and 4 hours into the race all the volunteers, water, police, directions, aid stations were completely gone. No one to help and no signs pointing which way to turn. I never found mile 17 and had to head back to the city which was very disappointing altho I saw the finish line near the city. I only could complete about 22 out of 26 miles. This is my 12th marathon and I've never had such a bad experience before. There was one other guy running near me. He was in very bad shape and no one to help him.

Good fast course

The marathon was well organized and the course was fast and relatively falt. A few hurdles and problems. First, ditch the walking division. A couple of us in the 3:10 pace group literally ran one poor fellow over becasue we just didn't see him and most of the other walkers just clooged up the course. I'm all for the walkers, really I am but if you are walking get to the side of the road so you can let the runners by without impeding them. Second, the mile markers were a bit weird during the first half of the race. We all thought we had just run the same mile twice as we came upon a second mile 7 not knowing that it was the 1/2 marathon marker. Really other than that fantastic course. Oh yeah, please have beer at the end next year!

Fantastic Course. Highly recommended.

This course is pretty darn close to being flat. I agree that the hills are very slight and very short. The EXPO could use some better organization for packet pick-up and please include bags for drop-off on marathon day. Also, where were the 35 entertainment stations along the course? I don't recall that many. Even with the minor organizational problems, which can easily be improved next year, I think Columbus is a great marathon and great location. It's a fast course (I qualified for Boston and PR'd by 9 minutes) and the spectators are great at the end. Highly recommend.

Another Great Day To Run

This was my third Columbus Marathon and another great race. The weather was perfect and the course and volunteers and organizations was also very good. This race is under new management and went off without a hitch. This course is flat, not pancake flat like Chicago, but a course with enough slight grades to give your legs a change. For the runner who commented Columbus was a hilly course, if you ever qualify to go to Boston, you will see what hills are all about.

Flat, Fast Course! Will definitely be back!

This was my first Columbus experience and it was everything everybody told me it would be. Fast, flat course with great fan support. I got a PR even with inconsistent training due to sicknesses! Due to the course being mostly downhill, my knees and hips suffered a beating, but the great fan support makes you forget about it pretty easily. The expo was a little disorganized. Maybe, in the future, provide the timing chip, shirt, and bib/goodie bag all in the same line so people don't have to wait in multiple long lines. I will definitely be back next year though! GREAT Boston-qualifying course!

Flat and fast, but not much else...

This is a great course for a PR. Flat, decent support, and not too crowded (after the half-marathoners peeled off). The weather this year was absolutely ideal. Beyond those attributes, there is not much to say positively about this marathon. The packet/chip pickup organization was not just bad, it was abysmal. They were overwhelmed at the Expo on Saturday afternoon, but there was not one volunteer trying to help get people queued-up correctly. They knew they had a problem, but they did nothing to help the situation. The physical design of the packet/chip pick-up was incredibly bad. Mass confusion, as lines serpentine seeming in endless and arbitrary directions. The very last thing you want to do the night before a marathon is spend an inordinate amount of time standing in line. Once you get through that fiasco, your goodies consist of a nice technical shirt, but that is all. As others have said, if you've run the Pig, you'll be spoiled by the goodies. The inclusion of the half-marathon created more crowding on some narrow residential streets, then they could handle. Some of the water stations were completely overwhelmed. Some were way too short and narrow, leading to huge pile-ups. I hope in the future they completely rethink the packet/chip pick-up process, and don't allow the number of half-marathoners to increase. This is not a crowded marathon, like Chicago, but it certainly was more crowded that I expected due to the number of people running the half. Lastly, a special thanks to George, the 3:30 Clif Shot pacer. He was truly awesome.

Great experience

This was my first marathon and I thought it was terrific. I thought it was neat running past the governor's mansion and high-fiving the governor. The military aircraft that flew overhead to start the race were impressive. The course had lots of places where family and friends came to cheer me on. The Gatorade did taste a bit chlorinated but some of the city water here has a weird taste. The one thing I missed was that there wasn't more music along the way. I thought with the number of radio stations signed up to have booths, we'd have more music - but there wasn't much. I would recommend this race to other first-time marathon runners.

Great marathon for first-timers.

This was my very first marathon and I was not sure what to expect. It was a nice course, and I got to high-five the governor because we ran right past the mansion and he came out to greet us. There was a significant number of spectators to cheer us on, but not very many organizations along the sidelines playing music. I don't know why I thought there would be more, maybe from looking at the map and seeing the organizations that had signed up. There were a lot of slower participants (I don't know if they were walkers because the walkers started an hour earlier so we started passing them) and I ended up almost colliding with one and sprained my ankle at mile 10. But all in all it was a great experience and I am thrilled to have been able to participate and finish.

Great PR course!

I strongly recommend the Columbus Marathon for anyone looking for a PR course. I signed up for this marathon looking for a small, fast (but well-supported) marathon and this is exactly what I found. I remember reading over previous runner comments earlier this year and I made a mental note that there could be some hills along the way. I found no real hills on this course. This course is very level and fast. Any "inclines" on the course are so gradual and small that they should not be counted as hills. The timing of the race (mid-October) also gives the race a great chance for excellent running weather, which we had this year (upper 40s/low 50s). The course has excellent water/food support. It seemed as though the water stations were closer to every 1.5 miles, which is great! I thought the overall organization of the race was also excellent. The packet pick up/expo was easy to navigate and not too crowded (although I did go early Friday evening). Great technical shirt to marathon participants! Race-day instructions were easy and simple to follow. The course is spectator friendly, although I would note that spectators are not as numerous as you will find at larger races, esp. through the later miles of the course. The finish area was not congested (which I've found at larger marathons), and there was easy access to ample food/water/medical help. I think my only suggestion for this race is related to the starting times of the half marathon and marathon walkers (who started one hour earlier). I found that some of the early miles were fairly congested with runners, esp. as we went along some smaller residential streets. As we approached the walkers (who were great at staying to the side of the course) it sometimes became so crowded that both runners and walkers were getting elbowed and shoved, which was potentially dangerous. I'm not sure what the ideal solution is (or if I was just running with a pack of people), but the early miles of the course are a bit narrow for runners and walkers to share the course comfortably and safely. Overall, Columbus is a friendly city and it is very easy to navigate. I would love to run this race again!

Decent marathon, but a bit hillier than expected

I came into Columbus expecting a fairly flat run, given how flat in general the state of Ohio is. However, the course was definitely hillier than I expected, especially in the second half. Still, this didn't detract from the course, and in fact, being from Michigan, I'm actually for the most part used to hills like that. I had a very crummy day (tanked only a little over halfway) and still managed a sub-4 hour time, so it was as fast I expected. Except for some headwinds along the way, the weather cooperated as it was in the 40s and low 50s throughout. This was race was only a fraction as big as Chicago - maybe about the size of Detroit, which I actually like. In general, everything was easy to find at the expo, as I spent maybe 45 minutes there (though I try not to make the expo a shopping spree myself). Parking was MUCH easier than I expected for both the expo and for the race, given how big Columbus is. Plenty of aid stations and restrooms along the way. Fan support was a little thin in some areas, but boy were they into it when there were lots. Again, no Chicago, so be realistic. But the fans that were there did not disappoint. Overall, be ready for some hills along the way and for some stretches with little fan support. But as a whole, Columbus did a great job and I would recommend this run, despite my crummy day (not Columbus's fault).

Best marathon ever: I BQ'd and PR'd!

Beautiful morning, beautiful course. It was my 7th marathon and my lucky one - I qualified for Boston, even though the last few miles were excruciating, due in part to the hills and fatigue. I had a bad moment at mile 18 when the promised ClifShot tables did not appear (at least, not until well into that 19th mile). Great crowd support. The expo on Sat. afternoon was chaotic, with very long lines of people who weren't sure what they were lining up for. But over all, a great race. I recommend it.

This is not a flat course

This was my 3rd year. I love this marathon; however, this course is not flat. The gradual incline between miles 13 and 17 just sucks the wind out of me, not to mention the many other hills all the way to the finish. AS for the expo, it needs improvement. There are very few vendors smashed into a small room. As for the women's shirt, it is nice but sizes are not true to fit and so for the last couple of years, my daughter has been wearing mine. Not all runners are small and petite. I am 6'1" and 175 lbs. I am not large by any means and a size large shirt (largest available for women) does not come anywhere to fitting me. Kind of depressing!!!! I missed not having the countdown-to-marathon e-mails like in the past, which supplied a lot of last-minute info; and the last-minute instruction booklet was missing from my packet this year.... Bring it back!!! I will be back next year and I hope someone out there is reading this and will take it to heart!! Great fans!!!!

Very nice mid-sized marathon

This marathon is reminiscent of a couple others I've done (Oklahoma City is the closest comparator.) Very well organized, easy logistics, good food at the end, etc. Crowding during the first mile is a little surprising. This seems to be due to the half marathon being started at the same place and time as the full, coupled with relatively narrow streets in miles 3-8 (approximately.) The half marathon takes a short cut at mile five and rejoins the marathon course about one mile short of where the marathon runners are in their course. This puts slower halfs running with faster fulls, exacerbating the congestion. I also started encountering walkers at about mile 8. These problems could be eliminated if the half marathon were run on the second half of the marathon course. The C-130 fly-by at the start of the race was very cool and unique. The expo was fairly well organized. The race t-shirt is excellent (long sleeve, full color, hi-tech shirt). There are a variety of good restaurants near the hotels downtown. Easy walk to the 'Short North' district makes for a nice excursion. I highly recommend this race.

Under New Management

This was my 4th Columbus, the hills seem to grow a little each year, though it is basically flat and the neighborhood crowds are fantastic! You have always got a supportive voice in your ear, and the field size is just right for a classy but not crowded event. This year the flavor changed slightly, long lines at packet pickup were the only real negative. Again a great technical shirt (though the Marathon color is a bit loud), and some of the water stops were a bit overwhelmed with the pace groups. The lack of a purse made the overall competition a little less exciting than it has been in the past, but it remains a great run for the mid packers. Mile markers for the 1/2 and full were very confusing, and many runners were clicking splits on the wrong markers. These should have been color coded. Reasonable hotels and plenty of good restaurants make Columbus a great city for marathon logistics, and family supporters can find you at least 4 times during the race. I expect the minor problems will be improved for 2007, and I plan to be back

Beautiful and Diverse Course May Bring Me Back

I have heard a lot of talk about Columbus being flat and fast and I'm sure there is data to back that up. However, my quads are telling me that there was a little more downhill than I anticipated. The weather was perfect and the course truly beautiful and diverse. In my limited marathon experience, Columbus is at the top of my list in that respect. The rest of the event though, left me as flat as the course was advertised. Packet/Chip pickup was difficult and congested. Maybe my 5:00 PM Saturday evening pickup attempt was unfair to the overall process. However, even if did choose a busy time to pickup, there were no printed instructions on how to go through the procees and not nearly enough visible volunteers or staff to assist. The volunteers/staff who were there, were doing their best. However they seemed overmatched. The gentleman at my station was also pulling packets for the next set of Bib numbers. The tech shirt is nice enough, however, this level of ammenity is commonplace in other races of less distinction, prestige, size and cost. Maybe I'm spoiled by the Flying Pig....or even the Bird(Akron). Both do a much nicer job with amenities. Plus, there is a reason that races hand out 'goodie bags.' The bag, although ultimately disposable, becomes real important in trying to keep your 'stuff' together. I had to stop by the Drug Mart booth just so I had a bag in which to throw my stuff. And, if not for a 'friend' at the Clif Pace Tent, I would have been stapling my Bib to my shirt. You can't be out of safety pins at packet pickup! I also found the website to be inconsistent: helpful in places, and 'not so much' in others. I'd like to think that my registration and packet pickup experience was an anomaly in an otherwise fine event, because I think the GREAT COURSE and FAN SUPPORT make this event worthy of a second try!

Good time for number 2

It was fun, my first time running this marathon. Actually only my second marathon. After the Cleveland Marathon experience I thought that all marathons were that horrible. The weather made Cleveland unbearable ! As for Columbus...good orginazation, deverse course through the city, ABSOLUTELY PERFECT WEATHER! The course actually runs past the Governors mansion and he was out on the corner giving high fives, which was kinda cool. Probably the only time people cheer for our Governor. People complain about fans...well as far as fans go I thought the course laid out great for my family to see me easily at 6 places on the course, but I gave them plenty of time to get places. The last 3 miles were packed with fans that really keep you going and one of the neighborhoods had an unofficial little kid water stop which was pretty cool. All and all I thought it was great and the last 7 miles were pretty scenic and went by pretty quick, not as hilly as people say, short slight climbs. If I do another one Columbus would definitely be on my short list !

Great race with a lot of community support.

This race was very well organized and the community support was great. There were so many people out cheering words of encouragement... it was amazing. The walking division is the main attraction that sent me to this particular race. The early start was great, but what I found confusing was why the announcer said that you couldn't run until the first runners passed us. For those of us who compete as race walkers, a walking division means just that, the ENTIRE race is walked from start to finish. There were many people running in the "walking division," which made the placements of time not completely accurate. Walkers should be compared strictly to walkers. Those that want to do a walk run should be required to register as runners. Overall, it was a great race.

Still better than the others I've done!

This was the 5th time I've run this marathon and I still enjoy the event (yeah, I'm crazy&haha). I've always told people the first half of the race is by far the better half as the run through Bexley, Olde Town and German Village is better than any of the other races Ive run (marathons and others). The crowd support throughout the race is great although a little sparce by the end if youre one of the back of the packers like I am. I have to laugh at the people who say the course is hillier than advertised. There are 4 'hills' on the course. Two are bridges on high street (between miles 12 and 14) and two are after you go under 315 (one right before 18 and the other after 22). They're not terribly long and they're not terribly steep. I had no issues with the expo and thought the ankle straps for the chips were far better than lacing it through your shoe. The technical t-shirt is always a nice touch (I can't understand why other promoters of marathons insist on cotton shirts). I do have two suggestions. First, try to figure out a way to change the back half of the course a bit. The 5 miles on High Street are very boring and from 14 to 17 feel like youre on a treadmill. Maybe thats a good thing for most but every year I feel like those three miles last about 23 miles. No idea how it could be done and maybe it's the best it can be. Secondly, dont increase the half marathon entry total to more than the 3,000 it was this year. I've run the Phoenix RNR and having 20,000 half marathoners with the 10,000 marathoners wasnt much fun. Marathoners shouldn't feel like second class citizens and one of the fantastic things about Columbus is the fact the marathon is the main event and not just some other 'fun run' type of thing. Keep it what it is and always limit the half entries. I'd absolutely recommend this event for anyone whod like to do a marathon or if youre one of the 3,000 lucky ones who can get in the half, also. As I said, I've done this 5 times and I'll definitely do it again.

Great Race! Wonderful Crowd Support!! Long Hills!!

I was very impressed with this race. My best memory was a kind spectator who ran alongside of me and encouraged me during a very difficult part of the race. I was very grateful for his encouragement!!! I've never had someone do this before. Thank you, whoever you were!! My only suggestion is that registration needs to have more room. Too many people in too small of space. I would love to run this race again. Great marathon!!

Flat, fast and friendly

If you're looking to PR, this is a good race for it. The course is generally flat, but miles 19-22 seem to rise very gradually and go on forever. Don't let anyone tell you it is pancake-flat. Starting the half-marathon walkers an hour early was a good idea, and clear directions to the massage area were a nice improvement. However, the half marathoners took all the massage spots (they need to split this up). Also, they need more bathroom facilities at the start and if you run under three hours, a couple of the turns could be a bit more clear in the 20's, as there is not a big crowd. Crowd support was great in some areas and even in the hinterlands there were a few folks. Overall, a good place to run a fast time.

Nice weather; needs more organization

I think this course is longer than 26.2. Bad mistake. Also, it is not flat and fast. Expo needs work. Having the mile markers for the half mixed in with the whole was confusing at first, until you figured out what was going on. Why did your host hotel not have a late checkout when I was told I could get one? You need to change hotels. Check out was at noon. Many people were not even finished with the race by then. If I do this again, I will only do the half. The weather was nice and that helped.

Great course & city; organization could be better

The Columbus Marathon is a great marathon - great course, great spectators, and many aspects of the organization were excellent. However what have really irked me this year are the expo and the finish-line arrangements. The expo was small, but could have been more efficient for its size - after all, how difficult is it to arrange bibs, pins, goodie bags and timing chip? The finish-line commentators were ridiculous. They were not reading out runners' bibs and the city where they were from, as is the custom. Instead they were chatting about their families - which college their children were going to, etc. Many older folks were coming into the tape and the commentators were not even trying to give them a boost by cheering them on. They just ignored them. It must be noted that they were very vocal for their friends and acquaintances as they approach the finish line - a total lack of professionalism in the finish line booth. Finish-line commentators and commentary gets an F+. I hope Jeff Glaze and company make some significant improvements in this area going forward. Other than this major public relations blunder, the 2006 Columbus Marathon was excellent.

Benchmark Marathon

My marathon debut. It was a great experience and I have nothing to compare it to - yet. However, I will certainly run this course again. Like the previous runner, I also wonder if the course is exactly 26.2 miles. My otherwise-accurate Polar Foot Pod showed a longer course. Also, some mile markers were confusing (mile markers 10 and 11 were probably .05 miles away from each other). Otherwise, I think everything else was what I actually expected and then some. Good job, organizers.

Very nice organization, perhaps > 26.2 miles

Volunteer staff were superb and there were plenty of amenities on the course. It was an outstanding day for running, with temperatures in the 40s and clear skies (not that you'll always get that). For those who like fan support, the course is a bit thin on spectators through many portions. However, when present, they are quite vocal. Amplifiers on the course assure that you won't fall asleep. Having run 45 previous marathons, I'm not sure I would call this fast and flat. The second half of the course is definitely hillier than the first half and is reminiscent of the challenge at Boston, which also has a slight elevation drop overall. If you're looking for flat courses, the Baystate Marathon, Grand Rapids Marathon, Niagara Falls Marathon, and Chicago Marathon are definitely easier than this course. One interesting sidenote on the course: it may be longer than 26.2 miles. I noticed that my mile times between 14 and 16 miles were way off compared to other parts of the course (even the end when I was dead tired!) When I mapped the course on Google pedometer, the course maps out to 26.6 miles. That may not sound like much, but think about running almost an extra half mile (particularly if you are planning to qualify for Boston). The mile markers on the website map do not match well with those of the Google map after about mile 14, so I suspect there was some sort of error in course measurement. Despite that, it was still enjoyable to run.

Could be the fastest marathon if backwards

This marathon was alot hillier than advertised. The hills were not steep but very long and definitely got my heart rate up. Mile 13 to 21 is on a slight incline with a few flat breaks and there are spurts of short, steeper hills until about mile 25. The first half was very flast. The course was indeed pretty and the size was nice. Temperature was perfect. Hotels were much cheaper (have run Chicago 2X, Boston 1X). The expo was a little too small for me since I like to shop. It was fairly well organized except they could have been a little more informative on their website in advance about everything - including gear check. I had a hard time finding the pace group but did eventually. Crowd support was decent, saw my family several times due to the course layout. The running T-shirt was awesome and very appreciated. At the finish line, they did not provide any bags for the great goodies so I had to try to carry everything with bare hands. Never found the massage tent either, I don't think it existed. I PRed at this race but I think I could have run a little faster if it weren't for the hills.

Kind of Boring

I've run 12 Columbus Marathons ['81-'05] so I've seen it evolve over the years, though not all the changes have been positive. The course is the main reason to do Columbus. Nice-size field, flat-ish course that won't hold you back. Maybe I'm partial but the city is nice with plenty of reasonable hotels and fine dining close by. Spectating opportunities are good w/ the cloverleaf course design. The website sucks, as does the shirt design. Medal is nice. Race staff is difficult to get a hold of. I found the pace [3:30] team to be awesome last year. Dead on the mark with super leaders! Plenty of water and clocks. People calling out projected pace is a nice touch as are the "miles to go" signs at the end. Crowd support is good but a little sparse. I've only run Columbus, Boston and Cincinnati marathons but have run hundreds of road races. Columbus is behind the other two. Cincy is just a lot more FUN. The course is much tougher but I liked that about it, though I would never try to PR or BQ there. Columbus could learn a lot from that race.... Like hiring a professional design team and webpage specialist. Columbus has all the things you need but the package is kind of boring. Still, it's my hometown race, where I set my P.R. and BQ'd four times!

Well marked course running you through downtown, surrounding neighborhoods and the OSU campus; flat and fast, well organized. Personally, the spectators sort of make this race for me.... Great Organization - Very Poor Pace Teams

This race offered great organization/administration. Course was mostly as advertised, although second half was much more uphill than advertised. My gripe is mostly with the 3:20 pace team. Miles ranged widely from 7:12 to over 8:00 with no regularity! In addition, pace leader did nothing to offer support/encouragement to runners. I have emailed race administration about my experiences twice and have yet to receive a response. In short, great race organization, reasonable course, good fan support, very poor pace team.

Wow

I agree with R.R.'s comments. I ran this race three years ago and came back primarily because it's a fast course. I didn't run a PR/BQ like the first time (I was still pleased with my time), but I enjoyed the race more. Kudos to the race director for making this a 'runner's race.' He seemed to know what we want, even down to the t-shirt. What I like most about this marathon is that everything is easy - no long lines: just a pleasant, fast, well-organized course with a lot of spectators. The way I figure it, I've been training hard all summer and don't want hassle on race day - at least if I'm trying to qualify for Boston. My only suggestion is improving the web site. It should be more informative. Other than that, I give this marathon two VERY enthusiastic thumbs up.

Boston, Here I come!

My second marathon and I was able to qualify for Boston. Used the pacer since my GPS wasn't working. He was bang on! The hills people talk about were nothing. They actually were a relief on the legs after running on flat surfaces for so long. Only complaint is the porta-potties. Had to go behind a tree (okay for guys) since there were line-ups and didn't want to waste time. Again, did I mention the pacers? Thanks to my 3:50 pacer, I'm going to Boston!

A fun and well organized event!

I was originally going to run Milwaukee, but when that race filled I moved to Columbus, and I could not be more happy with that piece of luck. I found Columbus to be a fantastic city with lots to do for my family and many good places to eat. The race itself was really the best I have done or been a part of. The course matched with the layout on the web page, the weather could not have been better, good spectator support throughout the course, well marked mile markers, and a great finishing area. The PACE team was fantastic! I grouped up with the 3:10 and held on up to mile 20 and then did a slow fade, but still ran a 3:13 which was a PR and qualified me for Boston. So the pace team deserves a lot of credit for getting me there. Overall, great weather, great city, great course, great organization. I already plan on going back in 2006!

Great PR Course, Packet PU could have been better

The course was great for PR's and for family who came to watch. The fluid stations were well manned. It was overall a very nice race to run. My biggest issue was with the late packet pick-up. I understand that when you pick up your number and shirt during the late pick-up, you run the risk of your shirt no longer being there. However, I stood there in line watching the shirt person allow people to change sizes from what they ordered and then I get there and my size (or even the next size up or down) is gone. Since we specify a size when we register, it seems reasonable that people should be given the size they ordered. When I inquired about this with one of the people at the number pick-up table, my inquiry was met with a less-than-helpful response, to say the least. I could go on and on about the many things that were organized extremely well but I thought the above feedback was important for the race organizers to hear because I know others were also talking about it.

Highly Recommended!

Highly Recommended! Positives: * organization (it doesn't get much better) * weather (mid-40s start, 60ish finish) * course layout (fairly flat with a few gentle inclines) * fan support (sporadic, but wonderful... somewhere between Des Moines- and Chicago-type support) * expo (excellent presentation by Jeff Galloway) * finish (final 0.5 mile is a real downhill thrill along lines of Hospital Hill finish in KC) * early start (worked out great -- please keep!!) Potential Areas of Improvement: * website (difficult to find basic info) * # porta-johns (need more, given # runners) * # gel/Gu offerings (possibly an additional gel/Gu stop) * course overlaps with full, half and relay runners (sometimes seemed crowded with faster/spirited relay runners) Overall -- a wonderful experience!!

Fantastic First Marathon!

Columbus was a fantastic place for me to run my first marathon. The course wound through some really attractive neighborhoods, including Bexley and German Village. The fan support in these places especially was excellent! The course was pretty flat, just as advertised. The section of the course that was run on High Street between miles 13 and 18 was slightly uphill, but wasn't bad at all. The volunteers were wonderful. All the water/Gatorade stops were well organized, and everyone was so kind and helpful. The Carb-Boom station was well-organized too. I was pleased that I had a choice of flavors, as trivial as that may sound. I've run in races where volunteers just throw packets at people. I guess at that point (mile 19), it doesn't matter what it tastes like, as long as it will do the trick, but I still appreciated the organization. I left my jacket with someone at the gear truck before I began, and found it in a plastic bag, marked with my bib number, at the finish area with no trouble at all. This could have been chaotic, but the volunteers handled it well. The finish area was very well organized, with plenty of choices for food (spoons for the yogurt would help though) and drink. Even though I was alone, it seemed like it would be easy to track down family and friends. My only complaint about the organization was the small quantity of porta-potties at the starting area. I waited in line for 20 minutes and had just enough time to get to my starting position before the race began. The weather was great: sunny, cool at the start, and slightly breezy throughout. I really couldn't have asked for a better first marathon. Columbus does it right: great course, volunteers and spectators. The City of Columbus, though large, is quite easy to navigate. It was easy to find a hotel nearby, park, and exit the city after the race. I appreciate that Columbus is a big city, but still has a small-town feel to it. Where else can you exit a city and after three miles be in a cornfield? I will definitely do a repeat of Columbus in years to come. Great race!

Best of both worlds!

This marathon offers runners the best of both worlds. It affords runners just enough spectators to keep them going and just enough runners to make it feel like a big-city marathon. The packed start line gets you pumped up and the race course is an awesome jumble of the city and suburbs. The course is mostly flat with the exception of two very long stretches that increase in elevation gradually. I would definitely recommend this marathon to everyone. A special thanks to Steve, Bill and the woman who shared a kiss with me at the 18th mile marker!!!!!!!!!!!!

This race is so well organized; even the clothes we tossed were in a pile waiting for us when we finished. For many other reasons, you will not be sorry if you choose Columbus. It was terrific.

Great mid-sized marathon!

This is a great mid-sized marathon. Not cramped liked Chicago but big enough (5,000 +) that you always have runners around you for support. Course is mostly flat and nice with miles 16-21 more challenging (mostly uphill). Finishing miles through the Ohio State campus. Very enjoyable experience.

An excellent marathon!

Was attempting to BQ on this race, and it is definitely a course to do it on. Missed it by 64 seconds, but still ran 3:12. I was running with the 3:10 pace group until I fell off after a bathroom break and they were clicking off 7:15 consistently for the 10 miles I was with them (I caught up with them at mile 8). The course is very nice and the weather was perfect. 45-ish at start, 55 at the end. Spectators were solid as you went through certain neighborhoods, but never too much to be annoying. I would highly recommend this course to anyone trying to BQ or set a PR. There are some caveats however. NEGATIVES - They allowed walkers to start at 7am (an hour early) so if you weren't paying attention you could come up on one really fast. They were spread out enough by then that it wasn't a big deal. Also, the elevation chart is a complete farce. Miles 12-18 are virtually all at a slight incline heading up High St. Also, that big decline you see from mile 20 to the finish does not exist. Prepare yourself mentally for flat and, in many cases, slightly inclining elevation. The only stretch with a decline is the final 0.2 mile to the finish.

A Great Marathon

A great marathon. The layout of the course made it possible for runners to hook up with their 'fans' several times. I really enjoyed the diverse neighborhoods the course took us through. I was truly impressed with what Columbus had to offer. Even in the residential areas the fan support was good. Fewer people might have lined the streets, but that did not 'curb' their enthusiasm. Water stations were numerous and well staffed. Thank you. Each mile marker was clearly visible and was accompanied by a digital clock which helped us keep our pace. The size of the field was perfect. Never alone & never crowded. Believe me - there is nothing that Chicago offered at $90 that Columbus did not have at $55. Try it - you will agree.

First marathon - and a great place to do it!

I live here, have been a race volunteer, and did the 3-person relay with my sisters last year.... So it was about time that I did the whole enchilada. The clover-leaf course makes it easy for your family to see you multiple times while only walking a few blocks. It is generally flat, with some long steady inclines as posted by other runners; slimy Carb-Boom was provided just before the long 18-20-mile slog uphill. The enthusiastic spectators always seemed to be just where I needed them the most. Those who blasted music from stereos in their apartment windows or front lawns were much appreciated, as were the guys who sat on their porches with guitars/amps and the one who played his Irish flute from the end of his driveway. The race organizers are trying to increase the number of official music offerings along the course, but I think we'll always need these impromptu 'marathon angels.' There were plenty of water stops and lots of cheering volunteers at each, even members of the local National Guard. Several tables were set up to minimize log-jams and they gave clear instructions re: water or Gatorade. The local police kept us safe from traffic and were friendly even after standing at intersections for 4+ hours. A gear truck was available near the starting line. I hope this went smoothly for those who used it, as my teenage daughters volunteered here! It was easy to find my family near the finish line and after the race. In a few days, I'm sure I'll consider doing this again!!

A very well-run event with great volunteers

As in the past, everything went very well. I really want to thank all the volunteers. I hope they understand that we cannot do this without them. They were great and very helpful. The Good Lord gave us perfect weather and made it a great day. Thanks so much to everyone.

One Size Fits All

This was my first marathon. I ran 3:07 and feel that my comments would be appropriate for anyone running under 4:00. The course was great--it loops through Bexley, Germantown, and OSU. It travels through downtown a couple of times. Their claim of a flat course is just that--flat. There are some inclines but nothing that requires a whole lot of effort. The aid stations were plentiful with Gatorade and water. Mile 18 had Carb-Boom. Mile markers were visible at every mile. The pace groups were great. They motivated everyone to work together. Their claim of 100,000 spectators is way off. There are plenty of spectators in the downtown area, but past OSU, there aren't as many. Entertainment was okay. If you're someone that needs spectators and lively entertainment, this may not meet your expectations. The medal and shirt (long-sleeve Asics Dri-Fit shirt)were sufficient for me. The pre-race goodie bag hasn't got much. The post-race support includes drinks, energy bars, bagels. This is a great marathon for first-timers and those looking for a fast time. I rate this as a MUST-DO!

World is NOT flat

It was hillier than I expected. I have run Chicago twice (2001 and 2004). I was hoping to qualify for Boston. I ran this in 3:46. The hills heading into the last neighborhood were tough...right before the CarBoom at mile 18 or so. I WOULD recommend this race over Chicago. Easier to travel, find hotels, find the race start, easier for family who are spectators (recommend bringing a bike to travel to sites along course) and easier to get to the start line - only 40 seconds for me. Still a PR, but just hillier than I expected.

Good race course.

This is my 6th marathon that I have participated in and it was a good experience. The race course is nice and the weather was good. When they say it is a flat course, it is flat but not as flat as Chicago. Two improvements that I would suggest is more porta-lets (this is true with most marathons) and they need to vastly improve the race website. It was not very updated and I would rate the website as very poor. Overall, the race is worth doing.

I'll never forget my best marathon to dat

My third marathon - second at Columbus - and a PR. The weather was perfect - 46 at the start. Volunteers were abundant from the expo to the finish. I think this is a great course for Boston qualifying especially since the last few miles are downhill. The run through the Ohio State campus is a great touch. The armed service band on the capital square was inspiring at the half-way point as was the number of service men present throughout the course. I'm from Michigan and the only damper on the weekend was that Ohio beat Michigan State the day before. This race is one of the few events that can get me to come to Columus in the fall.

Great City Marathon!

As an Ohio State Buckeye, I had set a goal to run this marathon sometime after I graduated from college. When I did, I couldn't have been more satisfied; it was such a great experience. There are so many aspects of Columbus I enjoy, and this marathon only made the city so much more appealing. This race is basically run throughout downtown, into parts of the Ohio State campus area, and then into suburbs of the city. The amount of spectators was amazing, everywhere on the course, and the organization and energy was exhilarating. I don't have a single complaint about this marathon, and recommend it to anyone! Go Bucks!

My first marathon - great experience

Columbus was my first marathon, so it will always hold a special place in my heart. I thought I was going to freeze my rear end off at the beginning but when the race started, the magic of going across the starting line of a race I had trained months for took effect and the feeling was almost overwhelming. There was a distinct lack of porta-potties but fortunately I have a niece who lives on the course in German Village so I got to stop there. High Street was 26 miles long by itself. The other .2 miles breezed right by. The fans were great and the organization was great. My family found me fast after the race and that was appreciated. Columbus will always be special and the feeling will always be overwhelming because that is where I summoned the courage to do that which I wasn't sure I could do because 47 years ago I was stricken with polio and suffer from its debilitating effects. It did not, however, paralyze my will to overcome my deficiencies. I look forward to doing it again this year.

Great course, great organization, darn good city

I ran this in '01, '02, and '04. The first time it was only because it's near my family in West Va. But it's brought me back twice more because it's such a great course and so well run. As for the course, it's darn flat and real fast--each time I've run it I've PR'ed. About the only uphill is mild, as you enter the OSU campus (around mile 18 as I recall). As for well run, I particularly appreciate the digital displays of splits and the volunteers shouting paces. In '01 they were a little rocky at the expo and start-finish, but I've seen noticeable improvement since. As for Columbus, it's got downtown amenities of a big city at a still managable scale. Mind you, I like big cities and loop races that start & finish at the heart of downtown--you be the judge based on what you prefer. My schedule doesn't allow running it this year, but I'll definitely be back!

A Great First-Timers Marathon!

This was the first marathon I ever did and the course was friendly for it. Flat with some minor hills; don't let anyone fool you, the hills are very minor. The biggest obstacle is Mother Nature! I thought I was going to freeze my ass off in the beginning. I must have looked like a bird in the wind trying to run up High Street with that wind blowing in my face. My eyes were so teared up I couldn't see. Most of the course was scenic (as scenic as Columbus can get, but it's no Boston or Chicago). The run through Bexley, German Village, and Downtown were the highlights. Running through Olde Town East is still a few years away from nice and I don't know what that neighborhood was that we ran through after Ackerman, but I thought I was going to quit at that point it was so boring. All the residents that came out looked pissed they couldn't get in their cars to go to breakfast at Wendy's. Loved the ending at Nationwide Arena and the fan support there was great. Watch the brick street and potholes - you could lose a leg. Didn't do the pasta party but the expo was actually not bad (not great though). All in all it was a good race, with a few course tweaks and some more fan activities and bands along the way it could be great quickly. It would also help if they moved up the date a few weeks, as that way the weather won't be so awful (my understanding is it's like that every year). Idea: maybe coordinate it with Oktoberfest in German Village and you could generate some more fan support and have an exciting finish...

Disappointing Event compared to Flying Pig

Save your money and run another fall marathon. Average spectator support with the exception of running through Bexley. For the 25th running not much in the way of souvenirs. Medal is okay. Needs to re-route race to avoid boring stretch from miles 12-17. In my opinion, the best marathon in Ohio is the Flying Pig in Cincinnati in May. Great support, scenery, and goodies.

Excellent First Marathon!

This was my first marathon although I am no newbie to racing. The crowd control was excellent from the start; however there was some confusion on the direction of porta-potty lines which caused some people to wait in line forever and others to zip in and out. The course was beautiful into the residential area of Bexley and Schiller Park. The long run up High Street is 5 miles of all incline... thus I would NOT say this course is flat. Then there were several hills after mile 18 to 22 which makes for a wonderful 'wall' if you are going to hit one. The finish is downhill over a bricked street which could have caused some serious falls if a runner should have tripped on the stone or have a hamstring locked up. (I almost did). The post event was wonderful beginning with the Mylar blanket immediately after crossing the line. Lots of bagels, bananas, yogurts, water, Gatorade. My family found me very easily after the race due to the excellent organization, which is a major plus in this marathon. We left immediately after the race so I didn't check out the post-race massages, etc... I will definitely want to run this marathon again. And thank goodness the weather was great, although a bit windy.

good well organized course, scenic in some areas

I have run this marathon about 5 times, the last time in 2003. I found it well organized, a good number of spectators in most areas, very friendly and cheering you on every step of the way. Usually decent marathon weather. Great college town feeling.

Great course, well organized, good for PR

This was my eighth marathon (including New York, Chicago, Marine Corps, Disney World) and I would definitely rate it one of the best. I thought it was very well organized. The spectators were modest in number but enthusiastic in spirit. The volunteers were great and the aid stations were well stocked. I'll admit the website could be more informative, but we don't run marathons for their websites, do we? You can definitely set a PR running this marathon. I cut six minutes off my prior PR, despite a strong wind.

Good race - even on a windy day

This was my 2nd time at both Columbus and the marathon distance so I'm beyond the euphoria of finishing the first time. I was trying to improve my time and achieved that goal easily. I didn't quite reach my goal of breaking 4:00 hours, though. The cold wind really took a toll on me late in the race. The course is a good sampling of Columbus - flat and fairly boring. The autumn colors make up for this quite well, especially early in the race. The minor changes to the course this year weren't an improvement, IMO. The supposed 'hills' going up High St. are nothing. If you haven't trained properly, you'll feel lousy at that part of the race and they'll seem like mountains, I guess. The headwind at mile 18-19, on the other hand, was obvious and chilling. The volunteers, staff and police all did good jobs. Didn't do the pasta dinner and the expo was ok. Didn't like the t-shirt because the sizing was wrong and it wasn't a technical shirt. The race packet was clear and *did* show the relay stations location and procedure quite plainly contrary to a prior reviewer. I am planning on running this race again next year but will consider other marathons for a different experience, too.

know why you're going

In response to the average at best comments below: You’re right. If you want 26.2 of pretty, Columbus is not your course. If you want a shot at Boston, Columbus is your race! I did the Flying Pig 2004. I remember a steady rain and 45-degree weather, hills and more hills. The course wasn’t any prettier than Columbus - just harder! I did my homework and knew about the hills! I ran Las Vegas in 2000. To me, it was a boring course but very fast. I knew if I went back I could qualify for Boston, and I did (no wind the year I ran it)! Columbus 2004 also got me to Boston 2005. It’s all relative to the experience you’re looking for. Boston isn’t that pretty or fast, but I can’t wait to get there!

Flat and fast

This was my second Columbus and I've done 14 marathons. If you want to PR on a flat, open course, this is your marathon (I can no longer PR at Chicago - it's just too big). Be aware of miles 13 through 18 up High St. - it's an upward incline. Miles 19-21 are a little hilly, but after 21, there are more downhills than uphills. The spectators are great and running by OSU stadium is pretty cool.

Columbus - Average at Best

Maybe because it's my hometown but in this, my second running of the Columbus Marathon, I was bored. The course starts out fine in Bexley but the 6 mile drudgery up High Street with nothing to look at is terrible. The course is flat and fast but boring. I'm embarrassed for the out-of-towners who think this is a pretty course. The website is awful. Seriously - it's terrible. The race committee needs to take some tips from The Flying Pig and its marathon.

Terrific race, fast course and well organized.

First time here at the Columbus Marathon. Super organization; flat, fast course and a great community! The only glitch the lack of porta-potties at start. Outside the potties, cool course, real flat and fast through a pretty scenic part of Columbus. The autumn leaves and very supportive crowds didn't hurt either. Certainly this is no LA Marathon or Rock n Roll, or Boston for that matter, but it's faster... Keep a touch in the gas tank for a little incline at 18-19 miles. The trip around Ohio State stadium and the rest of this very supportive community was terrific. Would do it again.

Great Race

I don't have much to compare it to, but thought a few people might enjoy the perspective from a first-timer at the back of the pack. I thought the marathon was great. The Course: Great starting area. You can establish your pace right away. I loved the course and felt that the few hills it did have were not intimidating even for someone who hadn't done much hill work like myself. The only part that seemed to drag on was the 5-mile stretch on High Street. I loved the first 10 miles. It just flew by as I ran through those gorgeous neighborhoods. I could hardly take it all in. The Organization: The water stops were ready for me even after serving 4,000+ people before me. None of them closed up early or ran out of Gatorade or water. The finishing line treats were a little anemic by the time I made it in, but I was so thrilled to have a medal around my neck that I was happy with one of the final yogurts and a cheese bagel. The Fans: They were great the first 17 miles. By the time I made it to the OSU campus, I think they had all packed up and gone home. This could be because I was so slow. I didn't see many people after that until towards the end. I am hoping to run it again next year.

Great experience for first-timers!

This was my first marathon, so I really have nothing to compare it to. I had a wonderful time running it though, and I thought that the fans were absolutely incredible. Plenty of GU was handed out throughout the course, with lots of water stops to wash it down with. The course was mostly flat, with just enough rolling hills to make it interesting. There were definitely not enough porta-johns towards the end though; when I finally came to one I had to wait for what seemed like an eternity to get in.

Will run again

I had a great experience at this marathon and will recommend it to anyone, whether it be their 1st or 50th marathon. The course is great, running through some very beautiful neighborhoods. Fan support is good overall, but pretty quiet in some sections. Walkers need to stay to the side. The vast majority complied but a few preferred to walk side by side in the middle of the road. Water stops were excellent, many thanks to all of the volunteers. My only disappointment is with the website. It needs to have a confirmation section that is much easier to locate. Also, the hotels are in great locations to both the start and finish line and should be advertised as such.

Volunteers were great, lots of support

Everything was well organized. The aid stations and volunteers were great. The police were at all the intersections to keep us safe. I can't think of anything bad to say - except the address for the expo was hard to find. I went to the wrong hotel and had to pay for parking twice...

'04: Feared for my safety- fought traffic at mi 2!

Wow - this marathon has some work to do. At mile two, a friend and I stopped to use the porta-john and while we stood in line, the end of the race passed us; the water stop packed up and the police officers removed the barricades and allowed traffic to resume. Mile two is located on a busy four-lane road and the traffic for that road was quickly on our heels. We were forced to the sidewalk, and we wondered why we paid the $65 entry fee to run along a busy road. As we attempted reconcile our pace (5-hour finish time as determined by our training plan) with the need to catch up to the pack, traffic barriers continued to be removed and water stations closed just as we reached them. Not only was this was a mentally demoralizing experience for runners who were just beginning the 26.2 mile journey, it also put our physical safety in jeopardy. The marathon needs to either correct this grave situation or make every effort to notify runners at registration that the course will close on your heels. If they plan to make the course available only to those runners at a 4:30 hour pace and under, then they should make that limitation known in their registration and promotional materials. It is my expectation that if each runner in the race paid an entry fee of $65, then they should be afforded the same accommodations for safety and water for as long as the course is open (the literature stated that the course would be open for 7 hours). I pray that no one was injured due to this regretful situation and cannot in good conscience recommend this race to other runners.

Nice - NOT Great!!

Overall impression was nice. Fans that were out there were great. A lot of fun people. The course overall was okay - a few more porta-johns would have helped. A few more collectables would have been nice @ the expo. They did advertise music zone or band. I personally didn't see one. I did hear a lot of boomboxes & that was nice. The group @ mile marker 24 with the marching band music - give them 5 stars. The finish line volunteers were also super people.

Disagree with comments from previous years...

I have been running marathons since age 17, twenty-four years ago, so I really wanted to pick one I'd enjoy and run well. I went to school at OSU before moving up to the Detroit area, so I thought it would be a fun distraction to come back to Columbus to run. Previous comments really worried me about running this race. After finishing this weekend, I couldn't disagree more. The organization was terrific. Traffic control and safety were top-notch, and the spectators were very supportive. I heard no complaints about lack of facilities, and the medals were a nice keepsake. I did hear some disappointment with the shirt which was a long-sleeve cotton instead of a technical cloth. The aid stations were plentiful, and their volunteers did a great job making it clear what was water and what was Gatorade. There were two gel stops at 12 and 19 miles. The worst part of the whole race was a really strong and gusty wind. My guess is the organizers really took the complaints to heart and made a successful effort to shape things up. I would recommend this race both for the experience and as a good Boston qualifier.

Great Marathon For 1st Timers

The Columbus Marathon is a great marathon for 1st timers. It was my first one (2004). The course is extremely flat and is spectator friendly because of the layout. The course allows family and friends to see you multiple times throughout the race. I definitely recommend it for first time runners.

Another solid race

Another great Columbus. Somehow this race always lucks out on weather (not to jinx it). The expo was better than it has been in recent years, although some booths were a bit odd (Purina Cat Food? I hope no one got confused...). The start and the race are always well organized, this year the finish was better than usual. In the past there haven't been enough medals and food for slower finishers (5:00 plus). This year there were plenty for all, even though the race seemed to have grown quite a bit from the past. This has long been a great race for fast runners: fairly flat, not too crowded, a truly crack team of pacers. This year it offered more for the runners at the back of the pack as well. My only criticism would be that the shirt wasn't the best: long-sleeve COTTON. There have been nice dry release shirts in the past; why not now?

Great day for 26.2

Thank you, Columbus, for a wonderful marathon experience. We had great weather, and we ran through some great neighborhoods and the Ohio State campus. We even went right by the governor's mansion, where the governor was out to cheer us on (both the Kerry and Bush campaigns were out there as well). There were actually more fluid stops than advertized--almost one every mile--and the people manning them could not have been more supportive. Also, as always, a big salute to the various law enforcement officers for giving up their Sunday mornings to protect us at the intersections. I would highly encourage other marathoners to run Columbus.

Overall enjoyed running the course

I've run 4 full marathons in the past, but this time ran the 2-person relay. This was my first time in Columbus. Overall, I thought it was a great course, but as far as the relay goes, I thought it was very disorganized. There was no information in the packet as to where the exchanges were. If you're not from the city, it's difficult to figure that out. In the future, it would be nice if that were clear to all relayers. I heard many complaints in the travels of trying to find the exchanges. There also needed to be a better delineated space for the exchange as there was too much congestion and it was difficult to find our partners. You might want to see how Cincinnati does the Flying Pig, as the relay centers there are much easier to find.

Everything you need for a PR

Great race with everything you would like to see on a course. Plenty of water and Gatorade stops, cheering spectators and nice tour of Columbus. The only traffic problem on the course was running into the group of walkers that had started the race an hour ahead of the runners. I encountered walkers three abreast and in the middle of the street. I'm sure this could be easily fixed. I'd definitely do it again.

Great BQ race. Loved pace info each mile.

This was marathon #5 for me. My PR was 3:59 from St. George and I was hoping for 3:55 and dreaming about a BQ (3:45). The day was cool, fairly clear and quite windy. The course was mostly flat but there was one stretch which combined a gradual incline with a nasty headwind. The crowd was pretty vocal in parts and great at the finish. Organization was good. The really good feature was that they called out the pace at each mile marker. That was much better than the time because you didn't have to do any mental arithmetic or squint at a pace band to figure out where you were. If your target pace was 8:37 and you heard faster than that, you knew exactly where you were. I kept hearing 8:30 which translated into a finish time of 3:42:21 and a BQ.

Great Race. Fun Crowds. Great Course.

I liked everything about this race. From touches like leading the veterans (those who have run all 25 of these marathons), to the great food, bands on the course, the group handing out the life savers - I loved it. The only thing I would change is the early start for the walkers. Too many of these walkers do not stay to the side of the road. Try passing some of them when they walk two or three abreast on some of the narrow streets in Bexley and Arlington. Let them start off after the runners.

First half great, second half not great

The first half was very nice and had crowds as needed. They were very enthusiastic. The second half of the race was rolling hills that I did not expect. I also wish there were more bands and crowd support in the second half. There were sections in the second half with little or no life. The water stops were nice and organized very well.

Great race for my first time! Nice and flat!

I loved the course and it couldn't have been more perfect for my first marathon. There were a couple of small 'hills' but nothing compared to the hilly roads that I am used to. I would recommend this course to anyone wanting to try a marathon for the first time. The only negative I would have to mention is that there were not enough port-a-johns along the way. There need to be more than a couple at each stop.

Boston in 2005

Third time to run this race, and I've never been disappointed. The ease of walking to start/finish from hotel fifteen minutes before the start is sweet. Course is more than fair. Was hoping for a Coolmax shirt (not cotton), crowds were plentiful, and aid stations and Gu were available as advertised. This was my 13th marathon, and lucky for me, number 14 will be in Boston 2005. Thanks Columbus!

Good Course, But The 'Whole Experience' Lacks

On the whole, Columbus is a good race. Convenient for travel, a varied course, and small enough to experience everything... however, that's the problem - for two years now, I've watched my friends at a 6 HR pace, not get a medal b/c the organizers have 'run out.' IMO, these people deserve their medal more than anyone! Don't you know how many people will run? I also find the website to be severely lacking - compared with something like NYC, where training tips, FAQ's, etc. are always abundant - the navigation alone is bad (Click HOME and you go back to an annoying FLASH Screen - no content), and annoying emails said to look for the upcoming FAQ section on the website even up to the day before the race. Many people in the area train for this on their own and to have to save upwards of 30 emails is truly bad planning. To have such a large staff and no one to think these things through... Also, miles 22-26 really started to space out water and MM 23 was totally missing - as the saying goes, the last 6 miles are based on heart and these kind of omissions make the heart have to work harder. Fun race - but go to Marine Corps, Chicago or NYC for a truly unforgettable experience!

Worth the trip to Columbus!!!!

This was my first. The expo and marathon were very organized (need more porta-johns at the start), mostly flat, more inclines than hills, good course around Columbus vicinity, lots of people to watch you finish, plenty of water stops and Gu on the course. Would run this one again!!!

One of the best times of my life

This was my first full marathon and I loved it. I ran many half marathons but wanted to run the Columbus because of all the great things I've heard about it. I was not disappointed. They went above and beyond my expectations. The long sleeve t-shirt and medal were awesome. The water stations, the Gov. giving everyone a high-five when running past, the course and the crowds were unbelievable. High Street (all six miles of it) was a killer. It is a nice flat course with a few hills. I can't wait for next year. In the meantime, I will continue to run 13.1 miles! THANK YOU FOR A GREAT RACE.

A great hometown race

I'll admit to being a bit biased since the start and finish lines are close to my house (and it's the only marathon I've ever run) but I really enjoy running this race. The fans are very vocal, even for us back-of-the-packers, and the course is relatively flat with only mild undulations throughout. My only real complaints are the pace groups weren't really on the correct pace (the two I've run with were both faster than they should have been), the water stops towards the end were lacking in volunteers and upon completion, they ran out of finisher medals. I'd think you'd know how many people were going to run the race so planning accordingly should be easy. It's just not the same receiving your medal in the mail 2 weeks after the race. With all that said, I'm training for it for '04 with a hope of not being as far in the back as normal.

Good course, good fans, lousy organization

As the others have commented, the course is very nice. It starts on a nice wide street allowing runners to find their stride right away. There are small elevation changes, but nothing too severe. The last 1/10 mile is downhill on a brick road. The spectators are great. It is a spectator-friendly course, allowing your fans to see you several times in the downtown area. Very nice. The amenities suck, though. There are no porta-johns at the start - plan to go in the alley before the start. The medals are the worst I've ever seen. The race results are slow in being posted, two weeks or more before they finally got mine close to being right. Hopefully they will address some of the many complaints listed on this web site. They have the potential for a great race here. The course and spectators are terrific. If they could somehow get OSU (we run right through the campus) to come out and support it they'd really have something. The race directors need to listen to the runners, maybe run a marathon once themselves, and fix the problems from last year. There are better races for your money.

Objective opinions from a local runner.

Having completed 16 lifetime marathons and 6 in Columbus over the last 14 years, I will say a few things about the race and city for an objective view to my fellow marathoners. This race and the city have a lot to offer. If you are even close to being in PR shape – you should definitely hone in on this course for your new record. If you are a beginner or novice marathoner, this course is friendly and exciting, but not intimidating. The weather is typically good to excellent for 26.2, but of course – no guarantees. The course elevation change is perfect. There is just enough mild grade change to balance the quad and calf effort throughout the race. The term flat is relative, so please check out the marathon website’s elevation chart for your personal determination. The start of the race is like a big city marathon with hovering helicopters, lots of energy, fun preludes, and a solid but not overwhelming runner crowd. The finish is very cool – turn and burn from the pavement to the city smooth downhill brick-lined street with the announcer calling your name and wall-to-wall fans cheering you home in stereo. The spectator friendliness of the course is probably one of the most underrated characteristics. Your personal fan club can see you at the start, 10-mile point, midway, and finish with just a little bit of walking. And the overall fan support is simply great, and it will keep you going - especially between bad patches. Not so sure about the 100,000 number though. That would mean about one spectator per every 1.5 linear foot along the course – you do the math. But the organized neighborhood parties, bands and solo rooters are very sincere and exuberant. Volunteers are simply superb, and are getting more organized and better trained every year. Columbus has tons of great restaurants, so you may want to consider booking a pre-game meal if you opt out of the pasta dinner. In fact, Columbus has some really neat attractions – so let your fingers do the walking on the net to find the ones that you like. The race director and staff seem sincerely open to listening to the needs of runners, walkers, wheelchair racers, and travelers, so hopefully the few, but important complaints from previous races will be addressed. By far, the ongoing biggest disappointment in my opinion is the lack of media coverage. It is truly sad. Since this isn’t an OSU event or a tragedy, don’t look for any coverage beyond a 9-second sound bite from local TV. The print coverage has improved a bit, but really, both are orders of magnitude below the coverage of other comparable races. The overall prize purse is ok, but I do not see any reason why it could not be bumped up significantly to draw in more elites.

Great marathon, takes place the right time of year

I have run over 600 marathons in every state and in every Canadian province and territory. I have done this marathon 20 times and sure plan to do it again this year. It is one of my very favorites. I have taken many runners with me over the years and will continue to do so. It has been well organized over the years. My only suggestion for improvement is for an 80+ age group. Note that Portland is now up to 90+ by five-year age groups. Older runners should be encouraged.

Great mid-sized marathon with friendly course

This has been a consistently great race. Mile markers are accurate, water stops are frequent (not like some I have run) with excellent volunteers. The course is varied and there is a nice mix of neighborhoods. It provides a great chance to see the governor's home. The expo is well run and volunteers there are friendly and helpful. Of course, everyone wants to get their number and chip at the same time even though there is plenty of available time to check in so any waiting is our own fault!! I am a back-of-the-pack runner and this is a very friendly marathon. It is nice to be able to see a few other runners still on the course near the end. I truly appreciate the amount of time that you keep the course open. Result book is super--most do not have them anymore!! I would appreciate a consistent date from year to year so that I can plan to fit in my other favorite marathons.

Great spectators, nice course, sub-par management

I've run Columbus four times and three of the four of have been very good experiences. In 2003, however, despite perfect weather, there was something missing that had been there previously. I don't know if there is a new 'management' or what but here are a few things that had me scratching my head: The medals were square and ugly. Runner 'goodie' bags had pain relievers and stimulants! What? it was a humorous point that many people I noticed were joking about at the expo. It appeared that there were less volunteers and in fact less spectators as well. Who ever is managing this race will need to turn it around or I'll be going to Akron next year.

Race Organization Is Terrible

Columbus fans are great and the course is very nice. However, do not expect anything from the race organization. Let's start with the results. Do not expect timely or accurate results. In 2002 and 2003 they had many, many problems with the results. Worse than any race I've ever run, chip-timed or not. Let's talk about amenities. The shirts are nice if they have the size you asked for. They ran out of my size. The medals are pathetic, a big metal square. Let's talk about the lack of port-a-johns at the start. Nothing like standing in line for 20-30 minutes for a port-a-john. Thousands of runners were forced to relieve themselves on the downtown office buildings. I'd hate to work in one of those buildings Monday morning. The marathon organizers need to hire a marathon runner for their staff, somebody who's run with the masses. These guys don't have a clue. But the course is nice and the spectators are very, very supportive. If you can overlook the poor organization, it's an average marathon.

Customer Service is VERY POOR

They have a nice course in Columbus and if the weather is good as it was in 2003 the fans are very supportive, especially in the downtown area. The race directors, though, don't care about the runners. 1. The results are not accurate and every day for a full two weeks my ranking fell. Ridiculous. 2. The race directors do not reply to runner emails regarding awards - I was an award winner - at least according to the results as of 10/31. 3. I just received my results book and now I'm a full 25 places lower than I was on 10/31. How does that happen? 4. The paid race staff is rude and not very helpful. They ran out of shirts, even though I'd pre-registered. They eventually told me they'd send one. I'm still waiting. This race has a nice course and good fans, but the directors are going to ruin it.

OK - but customer service and dinner VERY poor

We decided on the Columbus Marathon because it was within reasonable driving distance - 7 or 8 hours. The marathon itself was OK - but no big deal. However, the customer service by race staff was VERY POOR. Beginning with our initial questions - minor but reasonable. We e-mailed the race staff with a question about runners starting with the walkers - with never a reply, so just dropped the issue... The pasta dinner was very bad and definitely over-priced. I don't expect great cuisine at these things, but for $12 I do expect more than watery pasta and catering staff guarding the food to prevent seconds on dessert. The final problem came after the race. We had a 7-hour drive home, so we left as soon as we were both done. In reviewing the results, we noted that my companion had placed high in an age group - so contacted the race about the award. After repeated attempts to get even an acknowledgment of this issue, we have given up. I guess I would have expected some contact - if only to say 'you snoozed, you lost'. Considering that this race has a great deal of sponsor dollars and paid staff, I would think that at least one of them could be assigned to communicate with individual runners. We both volunteer (in all capacities) for many races - so I rarely comment on the problems of other races. However, in this case the direct comments to race staff have not even been acknowledged.

Columbus IS a Boston Qualifier...

I ran the Columbus Marathon in 1999 (the 20th Anniversary) and found it a fast, fairly flat, uncongested course. Looking for a Boston qualifying time, I felt comfortable in picking this marathon in order to accomplish that goal... and did so very easily. They have reversed the direction of the course from 1999, but it was of no consequence whatsoever. The finish line has much improved over 1999. It was much easier to get to the fluids and food. Keeping the spectators out of the area helped finishers take care of their immediate needs. The finisher's medal was not as nice as the 1999 medal. The old medal was shaped like the state of Ohio. This year's was a fairly generic square piece of metal. The finishing times were posted incorrectly and continued to change daily for the four days following the marathon, which was a bit disconcerting since I started out as a 2nd place finisher in my age group and fell to 3rd place on the fourth day after the marathon. As of this date, I have still not received my award for my 3rd place age group finish. I can just imagine what other age group winners must think... especially those from out of state and new to this marathon. I have contacted the Race Director twice regarding the estimated delivery date. Both times I was given a date 4 weeks from my inquiry. My concern is that there may be some financial difficulty endangering the future of a very good marathon; one that has been listed in the top ten for a U.S. marathon. I'd hate to see it go the way of the Washington D.C. Marathon. Especially since I plan to run it again as a Boston Qualifier and a place to PR.

A Wonderful Experience

It was my first marathon and I loved every minute of it. The crowds were fantastic! Support was good on the course. About the only negative thing I could say is that walkers were allowed to start an hour early and had to walk on the sidewalk for the first hour. Several hundred people jostling for position in the dark on a sidewalk was a little unnerving. Since it was so early with no traffic, I don't understand why they couldn't open up one lane of the street. But I do appreciate the fact that walkers are welcome and it was awesome to be up front when the elite runners came through. Would I do this one again? YOU BET!

Overall an enjoyable race

I have been a competitive runner and multi-sport athlete for 17 years, which gives me some experience to base my comments. I had an open marathon course (2:31), but can see how some of the side streets would get very congested with the large number of runners. Flat is a relative term and the course was not as flat as they seem to hype, but it is by no means hilly. Of the thousands of races I have competed in, I have never seen an available porta-potty around race time, so I don't see those complaints as warranted. The spectators were sparse in the stretch of the course from mile 12 to 19 but I've never been one to complain about a race because of the lack of spectators; rather I am grateful when there are a lot of spectators at a race.

Nice city and course!

My first time in Columbus this year. The course is very fast and a PR course for sure. Two people in my group PR'd and BQ'd. The city is beautiful and very clean. The volunteers were friendly and helpful. I will be back next year (I've already registered). Only negative was running out of medals for some finishers. Other than that, A+.

Great overall marathon

I had a great experience at the Columbus Marathon. I have run many, many marathons over the last twenty years and this is one of the better ones. The course they use now is much better than the past one, and there were plenty of spectators. This is not NY, Chicago, or LA, spectators are in direct relationship to the number of people running. Aid stations were plentiful and stocked well. I was disappointed with the T-shirt and they did run short, but I did receive a shirt by mail later. I think this is a good PR course - lots of people to run with, but not crowded, and flat with the exception of a few minor hills which help break up the course. The downtown location is great, many places to eat and drink. I look forward to running this marathon in the future.

Not As Fast As I Expected

This was the 2nd time I've run this race. The first half has way too many turns. People were running into each other trying to negotiate the turns. The backside hills (Miles 17 to 20) were tougher than what I had remembered from the first time I ran this race. There were only 2 bands throughout the course, while they had advertised 10. The host hotel charged an additional $30.00 for late checkout (3:00pm). Overall I give this race an average rating. I will not do it again.

Nice course, nice crowds, oraganization stinks

I live near Columbus and they have a course that showcases the city, it's mostly flat with only a few little grades. The crowds turn out in large numbers downtown, although there are stretches where the crowds are thin. My beef is with the organizers. The lack of port-a-johns is ridiculous. People are waiting 45 minutes in line for a port-a-john while others are peeing in the streets and alleys. The medals are square neck weights, very boring. The results were/are all screwed up. My 'official' time is nine minutes off - I wish I ran that fast. The expo is small and the goodie-bag was worthless. If you're looking for a good course with nice crowds and don't care about the official results, medals, and port-a-johns, then Columbus is a good race. Otherwise, there are plenty of other fall marathons which give you a better value.

Nice urban/suburban course, friendly people

My first attempt at the marathon distance, and I would go back as it was probably a perfect size (5,000) for a beginner. More porta-johns at the beginning would have been helpful, as I waited a half-hour before the start and still didn't get to go before the whistle. Very friendly runners and I loved my pace group leader Kevan (pronounced Kevin). But, for what is billed as a good beginner's marathon (and the course itself definitely fits that), I don't understand why the pace groups don't go out to 6:00 as they do at the Chicago Marathon. For this reason alone I may opt for Chicago at least for next year until I am confident enough to cover the distance at a faster pace.

Nice Course - Where Are The Crowds?

Columbus 2003 was my first marathon. The total experience was very positive and pretty well matched my expectations. On the plus side, I was very pleased to have run with a pace group. They helped me beat my 4:00 time goal (3:57:48). The course, as advertised, was flat. I live in Columbus and the only hills worth mentioning are a twenty-minute drive from downtown. I was expecting more in the way of crowds. Some stretches of the course seemed desolate for lack of people lining the road, especially miles 14-15 (North High Street), miles 17-18 (Ackerman Road) and through OSU campus area. However, the course design is nice as it allows friends and family to hop around and support you in several places. Plenty of water/Gatorade on the course. The finisher's area was a bit of a jumble. It was difficult for me to find the markers for meeting up with family afterwards. Taller signposts with larger lettering might help. I'll do it again in 2004 (25th anniversary) and would recommend it for anyone looking for an easy and enjoyable first marathon experience.

Surprisingly wonderful race!

Loved this race. I don't see how a course can get any flatter. I didn't expect a lot of crowd support and was very pleasantly surprised at how many people turned out and actively cheered the runners. The course is very observer-friendly. My family was able to see me at 11 different places. I loved the different color cups for Gatorade and water. My only criticism - and it is fairly minor - is that the website could have contained more 'extras', like a bulletin board and virtual race day viewing. The expo was a bit dull, but didn't detract from my experience. I loved this race and was surprised to see how much Columbus has to offer to visitors. I highly recommend this race to anyone.

Great day, great course!

Some of the previous runners must have run a different course, I don't remember any hills. I'm not sure you can find a much flatter course. It was a beautiful day and the course is great. You run through some nice neighborhoods, downtown Columbus, and OSU. A few more porta-johns would be nice. I couldn't bring myself to go to the bathroom in the Gov. front yard.

Pretty good race

At the Twin Cities Marathon this year my wife overheard somebody whining because they didn't have organic bananas at the finish. Most of the negative comments you read here seem just as significant. The course was well marked, lots of water stops (more than advertised - gasp!), mile markers easy to read (and apparently accurate), decent traffic control. They used large enough cups at the aid stations. There hasn't been a marathon yet with enough toilets at the start, so dream on (and go early). Prior to the race, it was easy to see how flat (or not) the course was by using the detailed elevation data on the website. My only complaints were that there were too many streets left open (though controlled by police). I was more worried about impatient motorists than anything else. Overall a nice event, blessed with perfect weather this year. This course is faster than the Twin Cities course, and maybe a bit faster than Grandma's Marathon due to the downhills in the last 10k. They did bugger up the results initially but they seemed correct (for me) on Monday after the race. I'd go again.

Flat, Fast and Fun

I think Columbus lived up to all three of its claims. This was my second marathon and was able to get my Boston qualifier in Columbus. Crowds can be sparse in some areas, but where there are crowds you can sure feel it. It was also a nice change to go out of the city and see some beautiful residential neighborhoods. I also liked getting a technical long-sleeve as opposed to the standard issue cotton. Looking forward to going back in 2004 for the 25th anniversary.

Marathon with potential

I have run 9 marathons on 7 courses. The Columbus course itself is a very nice, essentially flat, figure 8 offering the runner the potential of a PR. The only course that I have run that was flatter was Chicago, maybe Grandma's. It is also an easy course for your friends to cheer you on. The water stops were more than adequate. The porta-john situation was very inadequate even at the start. I ended up jogging across a bridge to COSI and used a porta-john there. I didn't see many porta-johns on the course. I pre-registered and didn't receive any form of confirmation;they didn't cash my check so my status was unknown until I went to pick up my chip. The crowds were wonderful, but I was a little disappointed by the light coverage of the local press. Nothing like the coverage that Grandma's receives! Medical and civil support was more than adequate. The medal and shirt were good. The finish area was well organized. The volunteers were great. Thanks! Even got a chance to high five the Governor! If there was more attention to details like porta-johns, registration, etc, better support from the Columbus business community to create excitement, this would be a hard race to beat.

Good Boston Qualifier

This was my second time running Columbus. I got my BQ this year (3:05:20). I felt the expo was pretty lacking this year - not very well organized, and not much to choose from. The course is nice, but has some boring stretches along High Street in particular. It's definitely not 'flat', as you'll run into some hills the last 8-10 miles. I love the downhill finish, though. One suggestion for the organizers would be to get some crowd support through the Ohio State campus. There was virtually none this year or last year.

Average

Ok, this was a fair marathon. The course is pretty flat (people comlaining about hills must be from Kansas), there were a lot of water stops, and the city of Columbus is very nice. However there are some problems: The marathon has outgrown the course during the first five miles or so. We were running on little side streets, and it was very crowded. The five miles on High Street are the most boring miles I have ever run in a marathon, a turn or two would have been super. The water stops were erratic, sometimes on both sides of the street, other times just on the right. Porta-johns at the start line were a joke, maybe 40 johns for six thousand runners. Finally, I know people are saying there were 100,000 spectators, but I don't think so. Spectators were few and far between, except at the finish. Even Ohio State University's crowd support was sparse, I figured it would be kind of crazy on campus. I'm glad I got to visit Columbus, but I wouldn't run the marathon again.

Friendly from Indiana

In Columbus, they spell hilly 'f-l-a-t'. I was not prepared for the ups and downs of this course. But past that, the race was well run. The expo was well attended. The weather was beautiful. And, the people were great. I'm a race talker, and I would give the runners at Columbus 5-stars for being the friendliest marathon participants that I have ever seen. I met so many nice runners that I ended up spelling hilly as 'I don't care'. If you like people, you'll love Columbus.

Not quite as fast or flat as advertised

I have run in several marathons. This one was not quite as fast or flat as advertised. There were some gradual hills in the middle miles, especially from miles 17-19, which seemed to go on forever. Also, there were not enough port-a-johns at the start. That being said, it was a well organized race, with a pretty course, good support from spectators, and nice post-race amenities. There were plenty of water stops. The post-race massage was well staffed for a race of this size (4,600 runners).

How Much Longer Can It Continue

Organization has continued to deteriorate over the 4 years I've participated. Practically no portable johns beyond the starting line. No styling to shirt logo. 'Poster' almost laughable. Finisher's medal a rectangular lead weight. Course is nicely laid out. Finish area greatly improved over last year. Marathon runners care more about quality than price. A few dollars don't compare to the months invested.

This marathon went off rather smoothly

This was my 2nd year running Columbus (4:32) and the organization seemed to improve this year. Fan support is strong in certain areas. The course itself is not that bad but since all the marketing material stresses 'flat & fast', out-of-towners or first-timers will get a rude awaking at mile 16-17, 19 and at mile 25. The finisher's medal was a vast improvement from last year. I am not much for after-race goodies/food/massages, just have water ready and a medal and I am happy. This was fun.

Excellent marathon!

I have run this marathon 8 times. The course is essentialy flat with a moderate climb at about mile 16 and another short climb at about mile 25. The rest is either flat or downhill. The nicest part of this course is that the last 6 miles is almost all flat, with a few downhills coming at the right time. In fact, the race finishes with about a 0.4 mile downhill to the finish. I have my marathon PR here and have qualified numerous times for Boston here. The race used to be in November so the weather was much more unpredictable than it is now in October. The 2002 Columbus Marathon was held in near perfect conditions (about 40 degrees, no sun, no wind). This year it became warmer throughout the race and finished at about 60 degrees. Organization is excellent; aid stations just about every mile with water and Gatorade. One funny thing is that the order of drinks kept changing between aid stations: first station it was water first and Gatorade second, next station it was Gatorade first then water second. Seems a standard should be followed here. Great support, great area, the Governor of Ohio comes out on his lawn every year to cheer us on, it really is a nice one. Actually had the chance to talk with some elites just before the start. There are many close-by hotels and excellent restaurants. Fans, especially at the finish, are excellent and loud.

Great Course, Poorly Organized

Just as advertised, flat, fast and fun. This could be a great smaller major-city race with it’s fantastic course and great fan support. It's too bad that it's so poorly organized. (1) There is no postcard or any kind of confirmation of entry, so you're left to cross your fingers and hope nothing got messed up until you find out the day before if they have your name. (2) They advertise as a $50 marathon, then tack on a several dollar 'processing fee' (for no apparent reason) which isn't a big deal, just really low-rent. (3) The aid station information was completely inaccurate. They said there was going to only be 18 aid stations throughout the course - this caused me to spend tons of time trying to plan out when I could walk and take gels. It turned out there were around 24. It would have been nice to know ahead of time so I didn't waste a bunch of time worrying how I was going to stay hydrated. This also caused me to stop and walk too early at one point because I thought there wouldn't be another aid station for another 2 miles. (4) The results were completely messed up. On race day, my name didn't appear in the database AT ALL - so my supporters at home couldn't track my progress. Similarly, I was left off the 'Final Race Results' list completely on race day (and, incidentally, left out of the listings in the local paper the next morning). The next day, my name finally showed up with a time of 4:12:59. Then the next day the finish times were fine, but the splits were all messed up - they had the same split times for 90% of the runners (which made for some interesting results, like people who finished in 3:30 somehow took 5 hours to get to mile 20). Then today (3 days after race) the split times are corrected again but there are new finish times (now I somehow finished even sooner with a 4:11:52 - thanks for the faster time, but it'd be nice to know how fast I actually ran - incidentally my stop watch said 4:13:06 - I'm tending to trust it more then the chip now). Even the official big, yellow time clocks at the end were messed up. They had three of them and the one in the middle was a second off from the other two. (5) The absolute worst thing, though, was they RAN OUT OF FINISHER MEDALS! My dad and I both ran - my dad came in after about 6 hours and they didn't have any medals left. I presented him with mine, but I couldn't believe they would make such an egregious mistake. Their excuse was that they had a whole bunch of last minute registrants the day before. Why does this not happen at other major races? Could it be that they plan ahead and order many more medals than they think they'll need? I flew from L.A. to Ohio to run with my dad, and what should have been a beautiful experience was made a little less so because of carelessness. Still the city, weather, course and fans can’t be beat. This has the potential to be a first-class marathon, if they get some competent organizers.

Great spectators and very well organized!

If you've ever been to central Ohio you know there's not much to look at. The course travels through a couple of nice neighborhoods but the 5-mile High Street stretch was as boring as it gets with construction and few spectators. All that aside though, the finish area was awesome and the crowds were great. If the construction is done by next year, I'd recommend this marathon to anyone!

Flat, fast, and fun is pretty much accurate

This course is flat. At mile 21 there is a modest downhill section on Lane Avenue followed by a gentle uphill on Woody Hayes. They don't come much flatter than Columbus. The course is scenic, with the first 10 miles going out and back through the upper class neighborhood of Bexley. Then there is a 5K loop through German Village, followed by a 5-mile stretch north on High St. before you enter Upper Arlington. Finally you run past Ohio Stadium and through the OSU campus before heading back down Neil Ave towards the finish. A very pretty course this time of year. The roads were all very well paved and mostly closed to traffic. The spectators were tremendous. There may have been 100,000 fans watching the race. The cloverleaf design makes it very spectator friendly. The downtown area had the biggest crowds. This is a good race for somebody looking to run a Boston qualifying time. The course is flat and fast and the crowds will keep you going.

NOT FLAT!!! NOT FLAT!!! NOT FLAT!!!

Now matter what anybody tells you, this is not a FLAT MARATHON. Hills from start to finish. Five miles of flat, if that. Good organization and great spectators. But FLAT, NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great 1st-time marathon

The Columbus 2002 Marathon was my first marathon. I am from Columbus so I was very familiar with the course, and thought it was great. As advertised, it was 'FAST, FLAT, and FUN' (although I think that slogan could use some work:-)). I agree with the person that said you need to know about the hill at 25.5. It's pretty tough at the end of a long race, but as long as you know that it's less than a 1/4 hill, you should be fine. Only thing that I was disappointed with was the finisher's area. It was very congested and difficult to find the family area. It seemed like you had to walk a long way to meet your friends and family at the end. I'm sure it didnt help that I had just run my first marathon (in less than 4:30, i might add :-)), but I did think that part could have been organized a little better. Great race for qualifying though! Shouldn't have a problem on this course.

NICE COURSE AND GREAT SUPPORT

This was an ideal race – fall in Ohio is beautiful. Weather was great and the crowds and all the volunteers were spectacular. It was nice to see a lot of people I knew both running and supporting the runners. Would love to run again.

Recommended for faster runners only

This was my first marathon, and I was very upset when they opened the roads much sooner than scheduled. There were many of us who had to run on the sidewalks along side of pedestrians and deal with traffic. I was very disapointed in the lack of concern that was provided to me.

Pathetic Finisher's Medal

2002 was my third year running the Columbus Marathon. The course is flat and fast. The view at the start is magnificent! The fan support is great! My only gripe is with the finisher's medal. The 2002 finisher's medal was and is a total embarassment. I think the organizers forget how important the finisher's medal is to a marathon finisher, especially those running for the first time. For most of us, the medal is the topper of the race, giving the bearer a sense of joy, pride, and accomplishment. The organizers could improve the overall experience of this marathon by putting a few more dollars of the race entry fee into improving the finisher's medal.

A Great mid-sized marathon, perfect for BOS qual.

This was marathon 5 for me and was my 1st Boston qualifier. The course was nice and generally flat. Others have written about the hill at 19, which was there, but I found the hill at 25.5 a little more challenging. If you don't know its coming it could be disheartening. (I try to make it a habit to check out as much of the course as possible prior to race day.)Great crowd support thruout and fellow runners were open to forming ad hoc support teams. The course layout was great for family that travelled with me to see me multiple times on the course. Only two minuses: 1st-- The staff of the convention center were less than friendly and accommodating as we were trying to find the expo. We wandered into an area where another event was occuring and the staff was rude and unhelpful in steering us to the correct area. 2nd-- Some Water Station set-ups. We HAVE to love the water station volunteers, BUT PLEASE have water, NOT just the sports drink (which was horrid)at the end of the station. To avoid congestion its good to go towards the end of a station, but its bad when all that's avail is the drink (please try a new brand). Also someone was passing out the GU pack at the end of the GU H20 station when there was no more fluid to take it with. Whoops. OVERALL...GREAT EVENT.

Great as a Boston qualifier

This was my third time running this marathon, and the weather has been ideal every time. I ran this one this fall to qualify for Boston. I liked my odds in Columbus, because it is pretty flat, well supported by spectators and water stations, small enough that there is room to run after a mile or two, and because they have pace groups for the Boston qualifying finishing times. It worked for me, and I will probably keep returning for most of the same reasons. Of course, being an OSU alum didn't hurt either.

Best Mid-Sized Marathon There is

2002 was my 2nd time running Columbus and again it was a great experience. Columbus always picks a cool time of year to run the race and a relatively fast course, which is very inviting (versus a June marathon in Phoenix, for example). I don't mind the noticeable hill toward the end of the High Street 5-6 mile straightaway, but I just wish the last 6.2 miles were all downhill as advertised. I found there to be some rolling hills. I say keep the course the same, but don't advertise the last 10 kilometers as all downhill. The water/sports drink stations were run pretty well, although I think if a runner is approaching and out of reach of someone handing out fluid, the volunteer should come out and hand it to the runner, so the runner can run in a straight line and still get proper hydration. Other than that, I had no problems with the race organization. The spectators were awesome. At mile 10, I was running through by myself and this whole crowd of people who didn't know me cheered me like I was on pace for a world record. To generate enthusiasm like that for someone you don't even know is outstanding. In closing, I recommend this course to anyone looking for a fast marathon course but doesn't want a too small or too big field of runners at the start. I plan to try a bigger marathon next fall, but I'm certainly not leaving Columbus because it was a bad marathoning experience! Keep it up Columbus!

Change of heart - the *very* bad.

I posted my comments earlier basically defending this marathon, especially as a PR course. Since then I found out that my chip time never registered at the starting mat, so therefore it doesn't count. How could it with no record? The only record I had (past tense) of my new PR was the time on my watch. I've run dozens of chip races all over the country and NEVER had this problem. It's completely unacceptable. I'll never know why this happened and I realize it's waste to try to place blame, but here are the three scenarios: (1) I purposely took a gigantic leap over the starting mats because I was eager to run a PR and didn't want to waste any time, (2) I cheated and didn't enter the race at the start (hmmmmmmm - didn't think of this until now), or (3) something was wrong with the mat or chip. Fortunately, I still have a gun time that qualifies me for Boston, but I will NEVER run Columbus again, nor can I recommend it to anyone.

fast, cool and smoothly run

This is the second time I've run columbus, and both times I qualified for boston which was the goal. for me the weather was a bit on the cool side at the start, but better that than the alternative. Course is flat overall, but as several posts noted it is not without a hill-there's one at mile 17 or 18 i think. it's not huge but it's more than worth nothing. crowd's were better than i thought since i had expected little. Organization was excellent and the best part is the cloverleaf course design that is great for spectators who can see you at least three spots.

Flat course, a Boston Qualifier course

I have run Columbus 4 out of the past 6 years. The reason I continue coming to Columbus is that it is a good race. It is a big-time race with a reasonable sized (3300 runners) field. The course is blocked off with no cars on the roads throughout the entire distance. There are digital clocks every mile. The roads are very wide at the start through the first 3 miles. The course is about as flat as you will find anywhere. There is one major hill near the 19 mile point. The hill is long and, although not steep, it doesn't level off near the top. That is the reason I give this course only 4 stars. If Columbus would find a way to eliminate this hill, then I would give the course 5 stars. After this hill there is one more lesser hill closer to the finish. The first 3 miles on Broad Street are a very slight incline. Almost not noticeable. Between miles 3 - 13 there is completely flat road. A billiard table has more inclines than that section of the Columbus course. Miles 13 - 17 along High St. are a very gentle incline. Although noticeable, it is not a section that will slow a runner down much. True, I also heard people say that the last 6 miles were downhill. This I found to be wrong. There were sections of rolling hills. Very minor inclines but when I was expecting 6 miles of downhill or flat sections, the inclines were more difficult than if I had been mentally prepared for them. This race has the highest percentage of finishers finishing in a time that qualifies them for the Boston Marathon. The reason for that is the course is overall very flat, the weather is usually cool and dry, and the start is not too crowded. I will run this race again in 2003. If you're not enamored with super-large starting fields such as Chicago or New York then this is an excellent marathon to enter. There is a great chance for a personal record running at Columbus. (Mostly flat course + cool, dry weather) = (pr finishing time).

the good, the bad, but mostly the good

I turned down spots in both Marine Corps and New York to run Columbus because I wanted a better shot at qualifying for Boston. I had no desire to run Chicago with its 37,0000. Been there, done that with all three. Bottom line is Columbus delivered: I have a new PR and accomplished my Boston goal. Here are my comments: Course: Slightly nicer than I expected. We went through some beautiful neighborhoods during the first half. I never expected the course to be completely flat. Crowd support: I could care less about this going into the race, but the crowd support exceeded expectations. I don't know where all those people came from, especially since the town didn't seem to care there was a marathon on Sunday on when I arrived the day before. My criticisms are minor and nit-picky, but I was very disappointed with the medal. Columbus is a well-established marathon and should put more thought into that medal. It was extremely chinzy. I've run some small-town, less expensive marathons with medals twice as nice. What gives? Also, none of the hotels were giving late checkouts - also unusual. I don't think I've ever had that problem. Other than that, Columbus was the PR race as promised and race-day organization was supperb. I bring my own GU and don't bother waiting on line at porta johns, so those things aren't an issue (sorry). Loved the pace groups. Can't complain about the weather either - talk about perfect.

Flat course, flat crowds, flat experience

I was a little disappointed with this marathon. As many have pointed out, the expo was average at best and, while I appreciate ANY support I receive while running, I found the crowds definitely on the light side. I am very concerned reading the posts here (and on the Columbus Marathon website) about the course and aid stations closing early. There is simply no excuse for this happening. I liked the downhill finish, but found the post-race refreshments very average. I think the course is very flat. If your training involves any hills of any size, this course will be no problem. I won't say I won't ever run this race again, but there are other, much better marathons to discover. One I can highly recommend is Cincinnati's Flying Pig Marathon in May.

Good Run, Nice City, but Flat????

This was my third marathon, and my first Boston qualifier. Unlike in the previous marathons I had run, no one who lives in Columbus seemed aware that the city was hosting a marathon. I agree with the majority opinion regarding the FLAT dilemma- this course is about as flat as the Chicago Marathon. Columbus, like Chicago, even had a difficult little incline right before the finish. Prepare yourself for slight inclines throughout the course. I ran the last half of the race with one of the pace groups, and the pace leader really helped me through it. He actually did get the group to the finish line before the time promised, and he talked us through the whole thing. The city of Columbus is suprisingly quite nice- good restaurants, nice attractions (check out COSI if you aren't too spent), and beautiful neighborhoods. The course was a uninspiring in a few places, but overall it gives a good summary of the city to visitors like myself.

Columbus - A Marathon To Be Run

An award winning course, great organization, good crowd support are always on the menu for a Columbus Marathon - one of the best kept secrets in marathoning. There is always someone running near you without being obtrusive. The water/powerade/Gu stops were well manned, stocked and organized. The course rolls gently along though some nice eye-appealing areas. I would hate this marathon to become a large one like Chicago. A perfect medium sized marathon with a ton going for it.

Awesome Fall Marathon!

What a great marathon. This was my 9th marathon and I rank it one the best. The course was beautiful with the fall color change. It was very organized. The aid stations were every 2 miles and well done! The course isn't as 'flat and fast' as I've heard. I still had a PR, however, the second half was rolling. I ran with a pace group for the first time which was helpful. The crowd support was there right where you needed them. Marathon foto was spread through out the course to take pictures. The host hotel, Hyatt was accomodating. They offered no late check out, but did offer free showers to the runners. We just had to ask and they gave us a free room for an hour to shower. I plan on running this one again!

My First Marathon Experience

I chose this marathon as my first because of comments on this sight that course was flat and fast. Woa baby was I surprised when I came to last ten miles of course. At about mile 16-18 on High Street began long couple of hills that zapped my strength and had multiple leg cramps rest of race. Crowd was far above excellent(put your name on your shirt). Overall good experience. Packet pickup lacked organization. Columbus is great town.

Good First Marathon

This was the first marathon I have participated in so I don't really have a benchmark....but, I found it to be very good. The course is not flat or 'downhill for the last six miles' as I heard so many people say (it's even in one of the race handouts). Long, gradual steady hills - not that taxing but you are going uphill. The Expo was pretty drab - I was expecting more. But the course was great. Miles marked well. Lots of water. A couple of GU stops. Crowded early but it thinned out nicely. I would run it again and probably will. The greatest thing was the fans lined up on the last .2 miles. You run down the brick-paved street and they are cheering you on like an Olympian. That was worth the whole race to me.

Good and Bad, but truth

Race was decent, but not FLAT, just kind of flat. The course is continuous easy grades (1-3%), but not flat. If you are from Florida its hilly, from Vermont its FLAT. To start, lots of room at starting line to be comfy and find your place, but it is probably because half of the people were in line for the 6 poorly marked porta potties at the race start. Race organizers... you can NEVER have too many porta johns, they cost $50 to rent get a few more. The first miles seemed mismarked, some a bit long and some a bit short, but each 2-mile split seemed about right, (or I was running a mile repeat tempo workout). The course was pretty nice and the roads were good, not too pockmarked, crowned, and no concrete. There was a decent amount of room to run, and a good number of racers. The GU at Mile 12 was not there, it was at mile 15. This may not seem like much, but if you train a certain way, and count on something, then it should be there. The end was ok... a tough uphill, and a sharp downhill in the last mile. The medals and post race food were average, No finisher shirts, race organizers... save the race shirt and combine it with a finishers shirt. If I had a choice of one or the other give me a finishers shirt. Good race...Not great, and Fast race but not Flat

Great marathon for sub 5 hr marathoners

I've run this marathon as a marathoner and a relay runner. In both cases, I enjoyed the course, the spectators and the support. However, this year, I worked the 21 mile water stop. The course was advertised as staying open for 7 hours. The week before the marathon, the walkers were told they were getting a one hour early start. Race organizers and police came thru our area about 4 hours into the race and said the roads would be opening up in 15 mins. They didn't open for another 30 mins, but there were still walkers and runners coming thru. Our station was on a busy 4 lane road without sidewalks, forcing exhausted runners/walkers out onto the street or walking on very uneven grass. Basically, anyone finishing in over 5 hours was finishing with questionable support. Another sidenote, my husband ran the relay this year. Again, they ran out of relay medals and the relay runners' shirts said walker on them. This marathon continues to go downhill. I ran Towpath in Akron the week prior, and I'd highly recommend that as a local alternative.

Another well done marathon!

This was another great Columbus Marathon! I'd run this twice before on the 'old course'. The new course seems to be easier because the final few miles are downhill. The Volunteers were enthusiastic, there was plenty of All Sport and water along the course, and the weather was ideal. There were enough runners that you were never alone on the course, yet could always run your own pace. I'll be back next year!

Probably not again .....

Overall it was a decent experience, but not one I'll pay to re-live. Expo was lacking, gels on the course were not where advertised (but most experienced marathoners carry their own, so that probably doesn't matter), some course issues with lack of support, lack of traffic control. Minor things overall, but not what I expected. If you want to do an Ohio marathon, shoot for the Cincy Marathon in the spring.

Excellent Regional Race

Facets of the race that I liked very much: (1) relayers wore a clear sign on their backs, so marathoners didn't accidentally pace with them; (2) relay stations were unobtrusive; (3) a local office building was opened at the starting line, where some racers warmed up (and Starbucks was open!!); (4) volunteers were numerous and friendly; (5) participants were spirited and not too numerous (so you could get your race pace almost immediately, not like my home town marathon where it takes 6-7 miles of jostling around). Possible improvements: (1) last 0.2 mile descent is on bricks (ouch!) -- could this be switched to another street?; (2) the last few miles of the race is unshaded and kind of uninspiring (e.g. backs of buildings, warehouses) -- a little re-routing and/or more spectator support here might help; (3) while I appreciate the low entry fee, charging $10 for the finishers' T-shirt is a bit chintzy. I made a PR here and would certainly consider running it again.

Course reopened to public too soon

This was my first Marathon and I was running with someone who runs Marathons. They started shutting down the courst and we had no mile markers, no more liquids being handed out, not sure which direction to turn, etc. and we were fighting pedestrians on the sidewalks. We were told the course would stay open until 2. It started closing at 12:00 noon. I was at the point of finishing at 5 hours but once this started closing up and the streets re opened and us running in uneven grass on the side of the road and dodging cars, it was 6:54:03. I was not very pleased and nor was alot of other runners along with us at the time.

Great overall

I recommend this marathon to anyone who enjoys very organized marathons with less than 5 thousand runners. In my opinion, this marathon is comparable to Detroit Free-Press, but is definitely not as flat as Detroit. I train in a very flat city, and was expecting NO hills because the word is that this is a flat course. There are hills in this marathon, but are mostly gradual-sloping hills, and not steep. The good thing about Columbus is that you are always surrounded by runners, but still have lots of room to breathe. The crowds are very enthusiastic, and are especially great at the end of the race down the home stretch ...for a second there I thought I was finishing at Chicago. I'd do this one again but will be more prepared for the gradual sloping hills.

Small annoyances add up.

OK local marathon. The course is relatively flat but not Kansas-flat as people would have you believe. Although the last 1000 feet are a fast downhill, the steep uphill at mile 25 comes at a bad time. Gel was not provided at locations as indicated in 'Final Instructions', a bit annoying. Better/clearer maps needed for spectators, lucky my support team were locals. Race started late. Nice medal.

Great first marathon or PR marathon

Wonderful fast course! Nice variety of neighborhoods and very flat. Also a nice size; not too many runners, or too few. Plenty of aid stations with PowerGel at mile 18ish (don't remember exactly). Great for qualifying or running a PR as well as for beginners. I will definitely run it again.

Great First Marathon!!

Columbus was my first marathon and it was awesome. Not too crowded, and at times a bit sparse, but overall the course was beautiful and FLAT. I didn't notice any of the hills. It was nice that it was so small because my friends and family were able to meet me at many different locations. Biggest concern: 20 minute bathroom wait before the race and for the first 6 miles or so there was a five minute wait at each port-a-potty. Overall a wonderful experience.

Very good course, well run marathon

If you want a fast course with cool weather, but not a huge marathon, this is a good choice. For those who dislike the mega-sized Chicago marathon, but want a similarly fast course, choose Columbus. I've run it twice, and I highly recommend it. Spectators can be sparse in parts of the race, but I don't think there were long stretches without a soul. Plenty of food afterward, decent expo and pasta dinner prior.

I've run Columbus twice and will run it again. It's well organized, the expo is a good size, and the course has only some minor elevation changes. The field isn't too large and I hope it stays that way. The pace group I ran with was WONDERFUL--they were really organized. The spectators were out for most of the course, and it went through a variety of neighborhoods. The weather was good in 2000 (40s to start). I would recommend this race for beginners or experienced runners. You can get a PR here.

Good Race, Good Course, Lot of Construction

I really liked this years marathon. I thought that there was a lot of new things since I ran it in 1995. Course Entertainment and Neighborhood Parties were good which helped the crowd support. I thought that the organizers did a wonderful job considering that the finish line was a total construction area. Can't wait to see what they can do next year when all the construction is done. The course was nice and flat and it was a PR for me!

Good race, good course, not too expensive

I found the race very nice, not too big but big enough to find people to run with. Unlike a previous poster, I registered early, stayed in a hotel at the starting line and only paid $110. In addition, I ordered 3 pictures and only paid $20. Good organization, but not too much crowd support.

Enjoyable race, but very expensive.

Although the actual Columbus Marathon was nice, all things must be considered. With $75 late registration, $135 (+ $21 tax) host hotel and $42 photos, for a total of $273, this was the most expensive marathon that I have ever been to. With this in mind, I would not recommend that anyone make a special trip to Columbus to run in this race. It simply is not worth the price. The host hotel even wanted an additional $55 for a late check-out! On the other hand, the volunteers were terrific and the meal at the finish was just right for me. An unlimited supply of bananas, non-fat yogurt and bagels were available even for the final finishers. The course was flat, but not very memorable.

Great Course + Great Support = Great Time

The course was a great sampling of what Columbus has to offer. Starting downtown, going through Germanvillage, Ohio State Campus and then finishing back downtown. Fan support was great throughout the course, it really keeps you going. The overall experience was teriffic and I highly recommend it for marathoners of all abilities. The race is going to be one week earlier in 2001. This should make for even nicer weather.

In some ways better than 98, in some ways worse.

Not sure how I feel about the new course. Crowd support was better this year. More music would be nice though. Packet pick up was easy. Clocks were not as good this year. In 98, clocks gave time, pace, and estimated completion time (great for us older folks who have trouble seeing watches) : this year they only gave time, and one not even that.

Well-Run, Not-Too-Huge Event That Highlights City

(Ran it in '96, before course changes). As 'Champaign' says, be prepared for varied temps (30-60+ F) on race day. If possible, pick up packet on Friday to avoid crowds. (I was able to talk with Galloway for 5 minutes.) Course provides nice tour of city, particularly Ohio State campus and old German settlement w/scenic brick buildings. Don't know if Elvis impersonator still shows up, but he was needed relief in the Bexley area. This race has a relay, so don't be discouraged if people blow by you in the latter stages. Be prepared for OSU colors and fight song... if you want attention, dress yourself likewise or in Univ. of Michigan colors and logos.

PR course. Isn't too crowded, yet.

Good sized race (large enough to be well organized, small enough to run at your own pace from the gun), course is relatively flat, and there's so much oxygen down there!

Fast course, great support/organization

The course is only so-so for scenery, but it is fairly flat and fast. Crowds are strong in pockets and quite enthusiastic. The expo was large and crowded. Nice medal and t-shirt. With good weather this is a pr course.
