Strongly recommended!

This was my first marathon and the worst bits were the training (in Austin TX in a lot of heat and humidity) and the early start in race day. I thought the organisation of the event was impeccable and have no idea how they can do and give so much for so little money. The shirt/cup/medal/photos alone seem just about worth the entry fee and everything went incredibly smoothly. I got REALLY lucky in that I picked up my bib as Coach Paul was starting his talk about how to run the races. He was about my age and a really good communicator. He's run a gazillion marathons and is the Coach for this and other Revel races. I strongly recommend using him, particularly if you train in TX or other hot places. Anyway, I don't think I would have come close to running the time I did without the excellent prep that he enabled for us, just in a one hour session. It meant the course held no surprises for me and I was able to keep spirits up the whole way (well at least until torrential rain made my shirt and shoes/socks weight 5lb more!). He did say to run at a 7/10 effort and unfortunately I only committed to 5/10 for most of the course, but knew exactly when to hit 7 on a couple of uphills. He showed us how much variation there was in his times (a minute and half delta between the fast and slow miles) and that helped me tremendously. I didn't love the early start or darkness and cold in the staging area, but once we began, time really flew. I didn't spend as much time enjoying the scenery as id assumed I would, but there were some special moments. The "out and back" wasn't half as bad as Paul had prepped us for and probably the steeper downhill sections challenged me more than the very few uphills. I finished WAY too fresh (as a result of just not trying hard enough) but as I write this on day 3, I feel 80% recovered (massage yesterday helped). Quads are less sore than they would be after a days water skiing (or after a PT session if I haven't been for a while). I can't think of no reason not to run the BCC and lots of reasons to run it. Yes, I guess the time flatters me as I'm sure I wouldn't do that on the flat, but it was a really nice ease-in to running. I'd never run more than 6 miles pre-Covid and intend to stop when/if it receded, but I'm really glad I did this marathon and would encourage you to consider it - and maybe make a weekend of it by staying in Park City.

Beautiful but too steep

I loved the canyon for the scenery but not so much for the running. I felt like the downhill was a little to steep. By mile 16 my legs were really starting to hurt when usually that happens much later in the race. I actually found the out-and-back section with rolling hills to be helpful in saving my legs from going completely out on me. The downhill sections in the last few miles just hurt when usually I would find them helpful. It took my legs forever to recover. I can see why many love this race but I don't think I would run it again out of love for my body. The weather was perfect though!

Meh.

My experience at the Big Cottonwood Marathon echoes many other reviews here. The pros: really well organized top notch on all accounts. The cons 'fast' course not all it's cracked up to be. The first 18 miles are beautiful and screaming downhill. Once I hit 19, the wheels fell off. Part of this was my training was inconsistent over the summer, but that change to rollers/uphill was brutal. Moreover, the out and back is not a pleasant, scenic run, and the last three miles (running into town) put us running down the middle turn lane, with traffic moving on either side. Demoralizing is the best word for it. I know a lot of people PR/BQ here, but a lot more seem to fall apart. I have run Top of Utah, Ogden, and Utah Valley twice each. I have BQ'd in the latter two. For my money, Utah Valley has the most run-able net downhill course. I wouldn't run this one again.

Beautiful for the first 18 miles...that's it.

Be warned, if you do not have the ability to train on 1,000 foot drops, this is not the race for you. Everyone's like 'you'll be fine if you're trained.' Um, no. My legs took a beating and I am a trained avid marathoner. The course is REALLY STEEP. The course is STUNNING... up until mile 18. At mile 18, you do an out and back near the quarry, and it was the absolute worst. You're running along a busy highway in cones, it's getting hot, it's slightly up hill, you're running along traffic, it's getting hot...you get the idea. It really was awful. The organization of this race was top-notch. The aid stations and volunteers were top notch. The ratio of water stations was top notch. REVEL really knows how to put on a marathon. Besides the course, it was a quality race. I will never do that elevation drop again (east-coaster), but a quality event.

It's a mixed bagbe warned...

It's the tale of two races; the first 19, then the last 7. Expect screaming downhill with a hill at mile 3 in the first 19. After that, it's 2-3 miles uphill in a stark urban area (with cars), then somewhat of more downhill right down the middle of a street with traffic on both sides to the endmade no sense. Finish area is stark. Pluses: efficient buses to the start, on-time start, VERY FRIENDLY volunteers, spectacular scenery, cool temps to start, sun at your back until mile 21, nice medal and shirt, updated emails/Facebook all week long, fast results, free photos, tons of gels/fruit on the course. Need to rethink: Last 7 miles - way too much traffic, very few water stops, lifeless and teeny expo, no clocks, no energy at the finish line. Be prepared for tons of downhill - they warned you and they're right - you'll have pain in spots you didn't know you had as well in the spots you're expecting. A lot of BQs but more that missed their goals.

Out and way portion was terrible

My second Big Cottonwood and didn't expect the second half had been changed to the terrible out and back. Last year was so much better ! Everything was wonderful, great first course and just absolutely beautiful but the 18-23 miles out and back uphills after 16 miles of steep downhill just pure awful... Hope they will change it back, otherwise they will lose a lot of runners who came here to run a downhill course, PR or BQ.

Beautiful, but tough

I came to run this race to try to PR with it's downhill course. That PR would have been possible were it not for the brutal out and back that involved a lengthy climb up after getting spoiled going down the canyon. The out and back felt like a separate race being hot and brutal vs chilly and fast at the start. Good luck on setting a PR if you come at low elevation. The medal, swag and post race massage were top notch. Great folks volunteering too.

Steep downhill & brutal out & back

This marathon touts itself as a BQ, but the 15 miles of steep downhill through the canyon will beat up your body and then you run a tough out & back 8 miles that is pretty much flat. The last 3 miles is flat/downhill but you run along a road that is partially blocked off with cars stuck in traffic, idling. There are hardly any spectators along the course. Yes, the run down the canyon is scenic, but don't be fooled that it's a fast course. The start was delayed by 25 minutes (which caused us to run in hotter weather at the end) because they ran out of buses to get people to the start. It was delayed the year before also. Again, I've never run a marathon that was more than a couple minutes late in starting. The medal was great and the shirt was nice. Just be aware what you're getting yourself into when you sign up for this race. Doesn't always believe all the hype!

Fast gorgeous course! Wasatch Blvd. was awful!

The canyon was amazing! It is a fast downhill course, but Wasatch Blvd. was horrible. They had a problem with the buses so we started 26 min. late which meant the Wasatch Blvd. portion was really hot. The volunteers were awesome and the shirts, medals and finish of race were really good. The expo was well run as well. Starting on time and possibly earlier like 6:30 and changing the Wasatch Blvd. Would make this race perfect. Overall I was very impressed and did PR.

Last yrs course was better

The course last year, IMO was way better - the out-n-back was brutal. The aid stations where the 1/2 marathoners and full overlapped were too busy and they couldn't keep up with demand. One of the aid stations was actually on the opposite side of the road and there was a lot of traffic coming that direction. I really do like this race but there have been changes to the course every year. I wish they would keep the 2nd year course. Also, a 6:30 start time to stay out of the heat a bit more would be awesome. This race has grown a ton over the 3 years and they have had growing pains especially with busing, hopefully those will be worked out. Everyone was really nice and friendly. The finish line was great! Medals and swag are top notch.

Loved half of the full marathon

Running down the canyon was awesome. Really pretty and fast. But then the out and back portion of the run was the worst! Hated it...it was so demoralizing seeing mile markers on the other side of the road at which you were not even close to arriving, and then turning around to see the exact same scenery for the next 5 miles was no fun either. I would think twice about running this just because of that portion of the marathon. It is that bad!

The canyon is beautiful!

I loved the run through the canyon. The aid stations were well-stocked, and the volunteers were enthusiastic. I did not love the run along Wastach Blvd, and there were some kinks with the later buses going to the start. Overall, I liked this race and will most likely run it again in the future.

So much better than expected!

Great marathon, my 3rd one and I PR'd! The start was half an hour late, which made for the last part of the race (and the uphill) to be in some hot sun. Otherwise, the course was wonderfully downhill and incredibly scenic in the cool morning shadows of the canyon. The spectators were only from around mile 16 to the finish, which I thought was wonderful, as no crowd support was needed in the canyon as it was so gorgeous and peaceful. It was so fantastic to have the crowd support during the tougher part of the race (Shoutout to Darth Vader, the Admiral and the stormtrooper!) The organization was great and whoever thought of handing out cold towels at the finish was a lifesaver! I've heard comments of this race being too expensive and too crowded, but I have to say that was not my experience. There were a lot of runners, but I never felt like I was not able to pass people or move to the side if I needed to. Revel does give you your race photos and videos free, which I thought was awesome, and I loved the swag bag (gloves and emergency blankets for the start were great!).I thought it was a fair price for the quality of the race and will definitely be registering for next year.

Beautiful but out and back in heat was killer

No one was present between parking and buses to direct half and full participants to their respective (distinct) bus areas. If you count on buses making round tips pick people up, you will start late; if you start late, it will be hotter; when its hotter, times are slower and medical issues are more prevalent. There were not enough aid stations or large enough aid station to service all the runners.

Fun but crowded

Wish they'd keep a limit on how many people can enter. Used to be a fun small race but now it's become all about making money. Wish the price would stop going up every year too. Motivates me to consider other races in the future.

Loved the canyon, hated the last part.

The canyon was my favorite part of the race. Wasn't too steep and made me feel great. After heading out of the canyon, I really disliked the last portion of the marathon. So long and flat. I'm looking forward to the half this year.

AWESOME, course, organization, refreshments, all

This was a fantastic race. I loved it and would do it again in a heartbeat. So well organized, beautiful course, great finish line. Even with the little hiccup with the bus at the start line and a bit of a late start you held everything together so well. Thanks for the experience!!

Get ready for steep!

This is a great race if you are trained - but you better come prepared for downhill. I love downhill but I underestimated it - even the second time. I was tired going into it so I knew it wouldn't be my best but I am going back to conquer this beast in 2014 and hopefully BQ!

A fast but tough course

Atop the canyon, you can enjoy the sunrise as you prepare your fast pace descent to the flat part of the course. However, beware if you are not used to steep hills, you could run out of steam for the later part of the race. I enjoyed the challenge and will be back, as the organizing committee put on a great race, with a great team of volunteers who helped along the course.

Great time, very professional.

This was my first marathon. The bus ahead of us tried to take a sharp left instead of going all the way to Brighton Ski Resort to turn around and go up Guardsman Way. It was stuck and we had to walk to the starting line. The course was nice but the down hill pounding got to me. A couple of miles out of the canyon (mile 21-25 maybe)the canyon run is over and the course isn't as interesting. Probably not much that can be done about it. Running on Highland drive is no fun. Other than that the staff was very professional, and it was a fun race. I am looking forward to next year and getting a PR.

Outstanding marathon from start to finish! I had no idea how hammered my legs would be for a week after..Having said this, I definitely will run this one again, but train for the downhills. I want to BQ for next year! :-) This is a great marathon to use as training for St George too, I nearly BQ'd at St George this year in part because I ran this a month before. This race will be a mainstay in my yearly marathon achievements.

city part tough, buses got stuck

I loved this marathon as it was my first. But the city part of the course was very long and traffic was significant on the busy streets. The buses got stuck delaying the race, which made those of us waiting at the top in the cold significantly longer then others.

Fastest and most scenic course I have ever run

I have run 33 marathons. This was by far the fastest course. The downhills were manageable, and the scenery in the first 16-17 miles was terrific. No spectator crowds like Boston, but it was nice to run in the silent canyon.

Loved the first 17 miles of this course. Even though the downhill killed my legs, it was so worth it. The race directors handled the high centered bus situation very well. I LOVED running through the canyon. Felt so at peace and helps you feel gratitude for the amazing surroundings.

Perfect race for the less than avid runner!

This is a beautiful, fast, downhill course. The perfect race for the less-than avid runner. Staff and organizers were great to work with every step of the way. Having a liberal cancellation policy was a real comfort for someone who is just hoping to get to race day prepared and uninjured.

Course was okay rest could use some work.

Course was okay a little steep at first and the rolling hills after the canyon were a killer. The mileage seemed to be mismarked which threw me off trying to keep track of where I was at. Also the aid stations seemed to be infrequent need to keep them at regular intervals. We didn't need the one just a half mile into the course it could have been used better later on in the course. The busses probably would have done better with the turn an hill at Brighton if they had of gone up to Brighton and then approached the road up the hill from there. The drop bag pick up was a little disorganized but the volunteers were trying the best they could to help out. That was one good thing all of the volunteers were trying to do the best they could (probably a little more instruction could have helped out).

Overall good experience, bus snafu a problem

Certainly enjoyed the course and scenery! The bus driver who couldn't negotiate the hairpin turn at the top was a problem, causing a few groups of us, me included, to have to expend energy walking uphill part way to the top starting point, but this is probably an outlier event. I also don't like it when every mile is not marked. It was only well into the race like mile 9 or so it seemed, that we finally got mile markers. Not all of us have fancy gps watches. How easy it would be to just have mile markers at each mile? Very easy. Also, parking for the marathon runners was further away and it was very unclear what shuttle service existed to get us back to the parked car. The last thing I wanted to do at that point was walk more. Apparently there was a guy in a nondescript green van who was a paid shuttle service to the parking lot, but we only discovered that *after* having limped all the way back to the parking lot. If that was clearly marked we may have been able to take advantage of that, but it was not. But a good race overall, and hopefully my comments will be seen and considered so the issues can be fixed for next time! :-)

Mixed reviews...

The race was fabulously organized and executed and there were several elements of the race that were my favorite by far, in comparison to other races that I have run (race shirts, medals, free photos, etc.). HOWEVER, I didn't train for such a STEEP downhill course and the race totally killed me. I left with a really bad taste in my mouth, but it was probably my own fault.

I loved the beautiful fast canyon. I have run 19 full marathons and I loved this one... except for the finish on Highland Drive. I felt like we were just shoved over in the gutter while traffic was going by. I'm curious to see if the course will be closed off next year with the new course changes. I will run this again, big cottonwood canyon is sooo beautiful and fun to let go and race down. Runners need to make sure they train LOTS of downhill.

Beautiful, challenging and would do again!

This was a very cool marathon...not for the faint of heart, or legs! It was my 48th marathon and I have to say I felt like I really was pretty tough to have been able to run this and come away with minimal soreness. It is a very 'muscular' race. I ran up and down our local ski mountain all summer, so I had prepared my legs for the extreme downhill running in this marathon. It is very beautiful in the canyon and the organization was great. I would do it again!

First-timer, not fond of all the downhill

As a first time marathon runner, I was not looking for a Qualifying time, I just wanted to accomplish my goal to run a marathon. So my comments may not apply to those who are in it to set PRs and qualify for Boston. I understand that that seems to be the goal and selling point for this course. While my finishing time was probably faster than if it'd been on a more even course, it was not worth the pain it took just to finish the course. I expected to be really sore but after the race not during it. That made the experience less enjoyable and more frustrating because I felt I had prepared well for this race. In my past races (half-marathons) the last few miles of the course have been the best for me when I feel I can finish fast and strong and push myself. I did not feel that way in the closing miles of this race (last 6 miles). Therefore, I personally did not feel good about the race even though my time was good for me. I acknowledge that I made some mistakes along the race, mainly starting out at too fast a pace, so my disappointment is not solely in the course. But I do feel the amount of downhill was too much especially with no uphill to counterbalance it. The downhill made it difficult to keep my regular pace because I felt I would fall on my face if I didn't keep moving especially the first 3 miles of the course. And I paid for it the rest of the race. Having said all that, I was very pleased in the packet pick-up efficiency, the busing, the amount of bathrooms, the aid stations, and the frequency of aid stations. The medal is the best I've gotten from a race although not a huge priority for me. The stuck bus was not anyones fault and I felt the race organizers handled it well and efficiently. I would have liked the pace markers to have been more distinct at the start line, I only saw two.

Super fast and very well supported marathon

I've run a bunch of different half marathons and a couple of marathons prior to this one and this one is my favorite. I ran the half last year and it's may favorite half. Some of my favorite things about this marathon (and half) are: * Beautiful downhill canyon route * Net elevation drop of over 5000 feet * One of my favorite race shirts * Great medals with custom ribbons for half/full disstances * Plenty of buses * Plenty of port-o-potties at start and on course * Great aid stations with awesome volunteers * Space blankets and gloves provided for the start * Massages at finish line * Professional photos throughout the race and at the finish line all provided free, along with a slightly personalized video (also free) * Did I mention the 5000+ feet of elevation drop? * In addition to the standard finish line refueling options they had awesome fruit bars from Whole Foods, delicious, and sandwiches from Jimmy John's (although the fruit cups were a weird choice...especially without spoons) * The temperature and weather was perfect * Race director and staff are reachable and respond to people

This is beautiful, fast, and has great perks!

I have done it for 2 year now and it is one of our families favorite for quite a few reasons: One is for the beautiful canyon and fast course, Second the flexibility of the race organization. My wife had to change to the half because of a injury and they allowed this to happen. They have awesome medals, shirts and food. They keep you excited all year with the facebook articles. We love the pictures also.

Well-orgainzed, mostly downhill marathon

This was one of the best-organized races I have ever run. They did hassle-free t-shirt exchange at the expo! The course was beautiful, fast, and mostly downhill, with a 'false flat' in the last few miles, which was kind of painful. They are changing that part of the course for 2014. Will definitely run this one again.

It was my first marathon and I didn't train as well as I should have. And I still haven't gotten back to my 'normal' because of the fact that my knee hurts every time I run. I loved how the aid stations were spaced, but I wish that they were EXACTLY on the mile marker. Just to help me know I have at mile __.

I ran this race in preparation for the St. George Marathon and did better on Big Cottonwood than St. George. I plan to run this race again and beat the 3 hour mark. bus issue and uphill at the end.

Overall the marathon was good. Obviously it was a bit annoying having to wait for the bus that was stuck at the guradsman's pass turnoff, and it would have been better if there was a way to have the course be downhill at the end rather than flat/uphill, but I thought it was a good course overall.

This race is fast! It is tough coming from such a downhill grade to a flat or slight incline for the last 8-9 miles, but anyone would do fine if they train specifically for that. If you want to PR, or qualify for Boston, you should definitely look into this race!

I ran it the last two years...

I loved the race the first year, but the second year was even better! The finish line the first year needed improvement, and the second year it was my favorite finish line of my 8 marathons. True the buses got stuck and we had to hike a bit, but it was a good warm-up. I thought if the buses drive past the guardsman turn off, do a u-turn at Brighton and go back to guardsman, the buses would have a better angle. I was disappointed to hear the route is changing again. This is a BEAUTIFUL, DOWNHILL course and the canyon I grew up with. In fact, running the one little up hill by Market Street, I felt like a mountain goat because I blew up it with no extra effort.

Loved the 17 miles downhill, and great spectators

The first 17-18 miles were great, but the last 8 were very hard (some uphill, not a lot of shade, lots of traffic). The bus fiasco at the hairpin turn was unfortunate, though not really the race organizer's fault. I was lucky enough to be in the bus right behind the one that got stuck, so we knew what was going on and got to wait in a warm bus while the organizers figured out what to do. We did end up walking maybe a quarter or half mile to catch a bus the rest of the way to the start line, but everything worked out okay. At the start line, there were cones and tape blocking the port-a-potties that caused a lot of confusion not sure why they were blocked off that way. The aid stations throughout the race were great, plenty of fluids and snacks (loved the Jolly Ranchers). I felt very encouraged by the spectators and volunteers along the course, they were all terrific.

Well run race...a must do at least once.

The race is very well run...runners are taken care of very well. Race staff are always on top of things. Only comment I have really is not that the course is bad it is just tough. 18 miles downhill is a killer and you just have to be really ready for that. You experience a ton of soreness after which happens no matter how many times you run down the canyon. For the 1/2...I think it is a great race. For the full...it's tough.

Beautiful course but start out slow

I loved the course and the feel of the race. It was unfortunate that a bus didn't make the turn on to Guardsman pass and delayed the start. The support along the course was fantastic and the finish area with the grass and trees was great. I had a hard time finding my bag at the end. Partly because I was exhausted and the bag were only partially organized. Over all it was a good experience.

Fast marathon - outstanding organization

1. Very fast marathon - 17 miles down a canyon with 4000+ feet elevation drop 2. Spectacular scenery (ran 11 marathons so far and this was by far the most beautiful) 3. Very well organized. Although it's a new race (only its second year) the organization goes way beyond expectations. I've ran big names as Chicago or CIM, and the communication and feedback from the BCC marathon organization was outstanding in comparison. You send an email with a concern/question, you definitely get an answer. 4. BIG medal. Nice swag bag, virtual and physical. 5. Nice finish area, plenty of food and drinks for the marathoners. Massage provided by the local PTs. 6. BOSTON Qualifier...I've qualified twice on this marathon. 7. Point to point marathon, not a lot of turns. 8. Be prepared to be taken via school bus up on the canyon anywhere between 4-6 am. It's about 25-30 mins ride up on the canyon. This is a marathon that requires a very specific downhill training. It is a must . But if the downhill training is well incorporated, then it's an extremely fast marathon. I've had a great experience doing the inaugural (although the course was different and not as great) and running the second year's marathon did not disappoint.

I LOVED this race because of the organization and how the race directors went out of their way for runners. Everything was high quality - from the shirt to the medal to the bags - EVERYTHING. I love Zazoosh photography and this is the first race I've done where ALL pictures were free! That's over 40+ free pictures. Loved running down Big Cottonwood.

Ran the Half last year Loved it, I was disapointed in the course change. Ran the full Marathon this year, I really liked starting at Guardsman but i understand why you changed back to Brighton, I am not a fan of out and back courses but i do like the change to Wasatch and i think having a down hill finish is much better, I would recommend not having the finish line be just past 13th E. rather i would turn into the road to Home Depot. I do like the Half marathon course much better, the further up the canyon you can start the better. You need to work on your awards both in what you give out and in getting them to the winners quicker. Your finisher medals Rock.

First marathon experience Life Changing!

I had just said to my running partner after hobbling in from our 20 mile training run, 'Unless I have some life changing experience while running the marathon, this will be my first and LAST marathon.' Amazingly enough, it WAS a life changing event. The support of the people on the side lines was overwhelming. I had an incredible urge to find the next marathon and go there to cheer on random strangers and support them like I had been supported! I wanted to be those people! The people handing out the fruit and water were so kind and so helpful. The course was beautiful and the pacer's were funny and encouraging. Not the high attitude, but the steep downhills

Course is good but super steep, never ran any hills this steep. It makes ojai unborn baby hills. The attitude wasn't much a factor as I come from L.A. In sea level. As u are up in 10,000 feet with thin air but you gain more oxygen as u run downhill so your lung is actually ok. It is the steep downhills that kill your legs. In ojai my body can do lean forward to gain speed, here, you can't lean forward otherwise you would roll down. U got to put on some brakes on some of the steep hills, did I mention 'steep' again? The course turned flat around mile 18, by then your legs were so beat up from rolling down. Around mile 19, I saw a young male runner was in an emergency oxygen mask in a first aid tent, his fellow runners were all around him, he looked back at me as I ran by him. That scene haunted me. The one thing they can definitely improve is the bag pickup after the race. They just laid everyone's bags which they provided during the packet pickup so they all looked the same. Some name tags were provided but when u have hundred of the same bag laid around, u still need to go thru them one by one. They are supposed to be in alphabetical order but not quite. Took me 40 mins to find my bag. They need to just hire some kids to look off the bags for u. Just guy even yelled out 'I would give u ten bucks if u can find my bag!'....

super fast course!!!! half marathon

This was my 23rd half marathon and I PR'd by 12 minutes!! You must train for the steep downhill course though. Expo was small but ok, great tech shirt, gender specific, great medal, post race food was ok, and your pictures are free. I plan to do the full in two years in hopes to qualify for Boston. Absolutley beautiful course, but was focusing on footing, hardly had time to notice the beautiful scenery in the canyon. Ample porta potties and aid stations, not very many spectators at all, none in the canyon, which was nice and peaceful compared to Chicago a week ago. I hope they do not change the downhill course, I believe this is my only hopes of qualifing for Boston

Pros and Cons

There were many good things about this race...nice technical dark colored shirt, decent little expo, very nice finisher's medal, lovely scenery for the first 17 miles, a fair amount of port-a-potties, and of course AWESOME volunteers that make it happen. However, be cautious about all the 'raving reviews' on the Facebook page. Anything that isn't 100% positive is deleted after you post. I know, because I dared to ask a question about the late start (in addition to praising all the good things), and my post was gone the next day. So, I'll share the 'cons' here. First, you are bused up to about 10,000 feet the middle of nowhere in the dark (and this year, threatening rain), and provided no shelter, water, or warmth at all. They did have cotton gloves and space blankets in the race bags, but a tent, and/or heaters or small contained fires, were what was needed. Then, after 2+ hours of waiting there for the start, we had to wait another 30 minutes, apparently due to some kind of bus problem (which nobody has fully explained or apologized for). Thank goodness the rain didn't come until later (but some were still caught in it in the last miles due to the late start). I'm sorry, but that is the one mandatory element for me...start the race on time! Now, as for other disappointing items, I stayed with the 4:05 pacer for the last 6 miles, and finished right behind him and his group. I was shocked to see the clock show almost 4:10. I'm not complaining about that finishing time, as it was good for me, but when I'm running with a pacer I expect him to be on the advertised pace. Since I've run a LOT of marathons, I was also somewhat disappointed in the post race food. The primary sponsor is a food company, so I expected more. All that said, if your legs can stand up to the downhill, you're practically guaranteed a good finishing time. Like I said, there are a lot of positives to this race, but also some definite areas for improvement.

Fast, gorgeous for 18 miles, then slow and tough

The first 18 miles of canyon is spectacular scenery and fast, but the 5000' descent takes a huge toll on your legs. Even with all the hill and strength training my group and I did, our legs were toast after miles 18-20, which resulted in slower times and painful last miles. I have never seen so many runners walking the last miles of a marathon. The starting 9800' altitude also was tough the first 5 miles, though perhaps the locals who train there don't feel it as much. This would make a great half marathon. Also, there was no starting line music, road clocks and the half marathon marker.

Not quite the PR course you think it is.

This marathon hypes itself as being a good BQ or PR course. That might be true, if you live in Denver or somewhere else where you are acclimated to the higher altitude and severe downhill grade. I mean, you run DOWN a canyon - it ain't as easy as it seems! And there aren't a lot of spectators encouraging you along the way. Lack of spectators isn't a big deal to me, but if it is for you - be prepared at the lack of them in the canyon. That being said, it's a well-organized event with beautiful scenery. Based on comments here from last year's event, the expo appears to have improved. The organizers do a good job of catering to the runners. The tee shirts and medal are high quality. If the grade weren't as severe, and if runners didn't start at almost 2 miles up the canyon, someone from the flatlands like myself could possibly obtain a PR. Once I got control of my breathing, settled into a relatively comfortable pace and realized I wouldn't get that coveted PR, I took out my camera and soaked in the scenery. It's awe-inspiring, and I'm glad I ran this marathon just for that alone. This year's race did have a major technical problem when two of the buses could not climb the last 3 miles of the canyon, and the organizers had to cram runners on available buses to get them to the start. However, the race started only 30 minutes late, and the organizers were good with keeping those of us at the start line informed. Our group stayed at one of the hotels recommended on the race website - the Crystal Inn. Wow! Staff there did everything for us but run the marathon! Runners got a free pasta dinner, shuttle service and a bag of breakfast goodies to take on the bus up the canyon. We were very impressed with their service. Bottom line: if you are looking for your BQ or PR - this may not be your race. Although we spoke with quite a few half-marathon participants who DID get that PR - that event starts further down the canyon where the altitude and grade are not as severe. But if you want a well-organized, challenging race with beautiful scenery, sign up today!

HARD

DO NOT run this race unless you have ample training on downhills....and I mean ample...a lot...!!! I knew it was 17 miles of downhill, I knew my quads would take the brunt of that ...what I didnt know was that by mile 5, my quads were done, finished, kaput!!! I really dont know how anyone can train for this race and prepare your body for this...I was shocked by what I had to go through. By mile 10, I was teary-eyed, by mile 17 I wanted to quit, bail out,....The ONLY thing that kept me pushing forward was my brain telling me to and my tenacious spirit that wont let me quit! My legs were shot....I could barely lift them... That said, everything else was fine...There was a small glitch in the beginning with a stuck bus on a hairpin turn going up the canyon, however this was swiftly dealt with. The race started 30 minutes late as a result BUT everyone understood...Course support was great, aid stations a-plenty, there was even a 'fixer-uppper' station mile 18...Since I struggled so much on the course, I got to 'enjoy' a sudden downpour complete with lightening and thunder...scary moments...I was never so happy to see the finish and crossed with some time to spare...Next day, my time wasnt in the official results...Again, swiftly dealt with by the timing folks and my, and many others, results are now listed on the official...Big Cottonwood is a very special race for runners who can run 17 miles of a 5,000ft descent. I found out the hard way, I am not one of them!

Too much downhill, is that even possible? YES!

Amazing race organization, fabulous shirts, awesome swag especially the mylar blankets and gloves, fantastic plentiful aid stations, great medals. The delayed start due to the high centered bus was handled well. I won't run this one again though because of the steep grade. For those questioning the elevation chart, may you consider that there is such a thing as too much downhill in a marathon course. Net downhill of 5300 ft = serious post race pain no matter how awesome you think you are. I found it difficult to focus on the gorgeous canyon because I was so focused on the road camber. I heard many complain about the steep downhill trashing their quads. My quads were fine, my calves were not. The marathon group that came from our area is a group of well trained downhill runners. We all agreed that this was excessive downhill. This was just beyond brutal after mile 21 even though it was quite flat. Running in traffic for those difficult miles was the low point. Get your downhill thrill at St. George or Ogden.

This is going to be very popular

Scenic, fast, great volunteers and race management. Probably one of the fastest courses. Will become a sellout.

VERY fast course, but not a big city marathon

This was my second marathon. I moved from IN (very flat area at sea level) 4 months prior to this marathon. I was lucky to train on the same course or same hills this marathon was set up on. Points to consider: - it is a very fast marathon for the first 14 miles (they changed the course for 2013, so it's going to be 17 miles in the canyon for 2013). - if you don't train downhill and uphill, you will suffer a lot after. - The 2012 had considerable elevation gain. If you're not from Utah or a mountain area or don't train on hills, you will have a big surprise. What I considered hills in IN are a joke in UT. - This was a VERY well organized marathon for being inaugural and not only. It has a great potential for becoming a great long term marathon. The organizers are very social media involved and also engaged with the runners, actively trying to improve the runner's experience. As far as I know, this marathon is organized by other runners. So runners that understand what runners need! That is very important. I've ran big marathons and was not as impressed as this one. - There is no expo. I don't care about the expo, so that was fine by me. - This is not a big city marathon. The canyon is closed so the first 14/17 miles are ran in solitude with the nature. I personally LOVED this. It was a bliss for me. I ran Chicago right after and I felt claustrophobic while running with other 45K runners and people shouting for the entire length of the race. If you need support and engagement with the spectators, you might want to reconsider this marathon - The canyon is absolutely gorgeous during fall. One of the most beautiful views and runs I've ever had (I also trained the entire summer in this canyon and I still did not get tired of the views). - This marathon starts at 6-6.30. It is dark up on the mountain at that time. You have to be on the bus at 5 am the latest. It is a bit of a hurdle, you can't just drive up the canyon on your own. If you're not used to this sort of start up, well... - The finish line lacked a little in food and goodies, but I expect the organization to take the runners comments seriously into account and I am sure this will improve. - I personally PR'ed by 26 minutes on this marathon and qualified for Boston. It is , once again, A FAST marathon. But it is very different than your typical big city marathon... I loved it and will run it again for as long as I will live in SLC and not get injured.

Loved this Half Marathon

This was the most organized, beautiful Half Marathon I have ever run. It was my favorite race last year and I am already registered for this year!

Loved it !

Awesome course! I was worried about the down hill but it really wasn't all that bad. I went ahead and registered for 2013 just as soon as I could. I can't wait to do it again. Oh, support people were awesome too. I was hurt but they took care of me, they helped me finish!

My favorite race ever!

The big cottonwood 1/2 marathon was amazing. I have ran 3 other halfs, and this was by far my favorite. Running down the canyon was breathtaking. I felt so amazing, strong and free. Ths is one race I will run every year.

Beautiful Course! Great organization!

Even though this course is hard on your body, it is a beauty to run and fast! I set a PR by 6 minutes. The race was well organized and started right on time. I loved the medals at the end. I would definitely run this race again!

Awesome!

I ran the 1/2 marathon and had an unbelievable experience! The course was beautiful with the turning of fall leaves surrounding us. The aid stations were one of the best I've had the experience of dealing with.

Race That Has Potential

The course is one of the more beautiful courses I have run. I did not find it to be a fast course and would recommend pointing to beauty rather than speed. The spectators were good in terms of numbers and enthusiasm for a race of this size, particularly given that the first 14 miles was in a canyon that was basically off limits to spectators. The packet pickup was one of the best I have seen. It was easy in and easy out. There was basically no expo which is fine by me. There was a runners shop in the same strip mall as packet pickup for those who wanted to shop. The shirt was short sleeve and said it was for the Big Cottonwood Marathon and half. In the runners bag were also a set of gloves that came in handy on race morning. There was nothing else in the bag that I found useful. I did note that the website said there would be packet pickup Friday and Saturday but when the runners guide came out I found that there was no Saturday pickup. There seemed to be some confusion as the buses departed the finish line to take you to the start line. Runners were having to get off the bus and help direct traffic. Despite that they got the folks to the start line soon enough for an on time start. For this I applaud them. I have been in several races where they delayed the start because runners were waiting for porta-potties. I say if the runners are there, they should start on time. The originally published start time was 6:00 until about a week or two out at which time they changed it to 6:30. They gave a number of reasons, all of which they should have known before they set the start time. I am OK with 6:30 but I am not OK with changing the start time. The aid stations were sufficient in terms of availability of goods, number of volunteers, and frequency of aid stations. I did note that the gels, fruit etc., were not at the aid stations specified; everything was there, just not at the station specified in runners guide. The runners guide raved about all the excellent food available at the finish line. Nothing could have been further from the truth. They had cups of water and some type of cherry baked good and that was it. The sandwiches that were promised were apparently long gone. OK, I finished in just under 5 hours but in my mind food should not be just for people who are fast runners. The finishers medal was OK, but also said Big Cottonwood Marathon and Half. Overall this race has some potential but the organization left much to be desired. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and say these were just first year hiccups.

Hard On The Body

Though it's listed as a very fast course due to elevation drop, it's just too steep. 14 miles down Big Cottonwood Canyon beats up the legs. Then you leave the canyon and climb. 15-19 is a net uphill. Then you head on a steep down again which I found hard to run. By the end of the race, I couldn't make my legs go. I have run more than 30 marathons. Not a rookie or new to the sport. And while a gentle downhill is a big help for a faster time, there are courses that can go too far, creating the opposite issue and this race is one of them. I ran my slowest time ever due to my legs being toast. I trained on downhills. But unless you can run down a steep, steep grade week after week it won't matter. And if even if you do that, i am not sure it would help.

really good course, not many fans

Positives - Really well organized, cool shirts, great custom medals, good food and massages at the end. Parking close to bus pick up made it easy to leave at the end. Negatives - just a few. The last half of the race is more difficult than it seems on paper...maybe that was just my fault. Hardly any fans because the first half is canyon and there were less than 300 runners. During the last half you run through city streets and there were a few intersections that were had nobody guiding traffic - kinda scary. However, like they advertised this course is really fast especially the first 14 miles and it was super beautiful as well. If you like downhill and don't care about having a lot of fans or other runners around you at the end of the race, this marathon would be perfect for you! I will certainly run this race again.

PR course if you like brutal downhill

Brutal, gorgeous downhill course. My wife who loves downhill, pr's by 12 minutes. She has run about 20 other 1/2 marathons, so it wasn't a fluke time. It's a quad burner. Swag and organization was awesome!! Will for sure it again next year.
