A well organized event

Louisiana Marathon is a well organized event. This is a medium sized marathon with over a thousand full marathon runners and a couple thousand half marathon runners. The start line and finish line are at the same location in state capitol park. There are plenty of parking not far from the start/finish area. There was no clear start wave. With the full marathon and half marathon started together, it made the first mile running congested. The full marathon and the half marathon share the same route going through LSU tiger stadium and around University lake. The full marathon goes out to cover the other half at the east side of the city with majority of a back and forth route. A portion of the full marathon route was on a street with tree at the center of the route. The tree roots made the road surface very bumpy. We were very lucky to have a good weather for 2025 run. The temperature was about 40~50 degrees all day. The day before was a warm day with temperature 70 degrees around noon time. The day after was a cold day with temperature below freeze and snowy day after. There were good services before, during, and after the run. There were a few flavored free coffee in the morning before the run. There were plenty of aid stations along the way. The intervals were less than 2 miles apart. Quite a few of the aid stations had GU energy gels supply. The volunteers were very helpful. They did a great job in the cold windy weather, specially think about they constantly get their hand wet. I thank the lady at the gear check station who help me put up my hoody after I finished the run. There were variety of drink and food after the run. The capitol park has plenty space to allow the finishers with their friends and family member to sit around. There was a live musical at the finish area. We got our free photo a couple of days after. That's another plus. Many spectators cheer at the finish area. Along the way, there are many families sitting outside of their house cheering the runner in the windy chill cold weather. Baton Rouge is the state capitol of Louisiana. It is also a college town for LSU. It is not far from New Orleans. There are plenty to do there for anyone travel from outside of the area.

PR'd here, fantastic race, would do it again

I'm on the quest for 50 states. Picked this one for my LA race and would not hesitate to do it again. It had the organization and feel of a larger race. Logistics were easy. Course was interesting and just enough turns to keep things fresh. Very flat with only 2 hills (up and down the overpass) to speak of. Great spectators and aid stations. A little kid gave me some mardi gras beads around mile 20 and it was a huge boost.

A favorite!

Gorgeous course, easy logistics, incredible crowd support which made it so fun, and outstanding post race party with plenty of food, drinks, and music. Great experience - highly recommend!

A solid race!

This was a solid race overall. The course was pretty flat until the onramp at mile 25. The organization of the event and the amount of aid stations were excellent. There were a lot of spectators as well. This race would rank in the top 10 of the marathons I've completed. This was marathon #23 and state #22 for me.

A great race

I've run marathons all over the country, and I found this one to be pretty great. The course was mostly flat, the organization was perfect, the weather was good, the water stations were frequent with helpful volunteers, and the swag was nice. There's not much more you could ask for. If I had to be picky and find some areas for improvement, I would suggest filling out the expo space with some more vendors, and I would point out there's a pretty tough bridge to climb around mile 25 which is always a bad spot for a tough hill. But neither of those two items are a big deal at all. If you're doing 50 states, make this your Louisiana Marathon.

An in-person marathon during COVID

Note that this race was run during the COVID pandemic. A HUGE hats-off to the organizers and city for allowing us to run...thank you!!! I'll keep my comments to the areas that aren't COVID-related, because hopefully by next year the race can be back to normal. The course is great. It starts and finishes at the capitol complex in downtown Baton Rouge. It's a beautiful area with plenty of green space to relax on after the race. The first part of the course runs through the LSU campus and University Lake, which are both really scenic and enjoyable to run by. After that it was mainly residential, but through some very nice and pretty neighborhoods. Plenty of water tables and plenty of port-o-cans. Organization is top notch. Corrals at the start were well run, and the execution on race day went without flaws. Also, the race provides free race photos! Spectators were few and far between, but with COVID that wasn't a big surprise. The ones that did make it out were very enthusiastic. Overall I think the Louisiana Marathon should be on everybody's list...you will not be disappointed you came. It's a great race, great course, a fun city to spend a long weekend in, and they really take good care of you.

Friendly, Fast, and Fun

By way of context, LSU beat Clemson to win the national championship earlier in the week and held a parade on their campus the Saturday of marathon weekend. So I laughed out loud when a spectator held a sign: If marathons were easy they'd be called Clemson. The course and organization is spectacular. There are not many spectators, especially as you run through LSU. The ones who were out were amongst the friendliest I've encountered in my marathons. They have turned the event into a reason to have a party. And they want you to partake. When I expressed an interest in the Jell-O shots at mile 16, a spectator ran alongside of me with one in each hand for the taking. While I did not partake, plenty of runners did. I only wish there were more such residents closer to the finish line. Not to despair, there is plenty at the finish line with which to celebrate.

Perfect for the fast ... or sleaux

Want a PR and/or BQ? This is the place for you! If you're like me and well past that speedy stuff in your running life, then this is also the place for you! Other than two hills for bridges, it's flat as can be and in 2019, cool temps made for quick times. A nice tour of the city, featuring downtown (with a finish at the incredible state capitol), lakes, LSU campus and some gorgeous neighborhoods. The course featured more water/gatorade stops than any marathon I can remember. Many of them offered energy gels and all had porta potties. And that doesn't count neighborhood spectators, where you could find any matter of fruit, cookies, king cake, gumbo and a variety of alcohol samplings. I think my total came to three beers, two mimosas and one incredibly strong sangria. Needless to say, I wasn't in that PR/BQ grouping. Organization was superb with frequent communication, including the unforeseen cancelation of some Saturday events due to a lightning storm. The post-race gathering was one of the best with samplings of local Cajun cuisine and brews, as well as a stage featuring some outstanding local musicians. So yes, I recommend this race. After 42 marathons, I'd put it in my top five.

Very well organized race

The course is flat, the race is very well organized, and the water/power aid stops were plentiful. I just wish it wouldn't have been so damn cold at the beginning - but I'll take it over excessive heat any day. This was a great experience for my 50th marathon!

Best marathon experience yet. Fast & Friendly

Someone is doing it right. It was hotter than donut grease this year and my time was awful but still walked away with such a good marathon experience. They had ice every mile after the half split which I'm sure was no easy feat. I've been to marathon's were there are a lot of people watching, but the people come out and are other level supportive. Calling your name, cheering the whole time. I probably passed 50 spreads on tables with various runner support goodies just from the neighbors. Course is so fast. Super pretty surroundings. Food is ridiculous. You get a band for 6 items. I don't understand how you could eat 6 items. Its legit things. Gumbo, Jambalaya, Crawfish mac and cheese. Best race shirt I've ever gotten for any race. Fairly tall and every race shirt is basically unwearable. This one is nice and fits great. Expo was smaller than expected for race this size. Gear you can by from the race organizers are nice. The city seems to make a big deal out of this. We stayed in downtown Hilton and walked easy to start. Just super friendly. Above and beyond. Can't say enough about the feel; the organizers attention to detail; the neighborhood support; free photos!; flat course; free post run massage/stretch; awesome post-race festivities/awards. I subconsciously will feel about a race in line with my performance; My performance was awful and still had such a great experience. Kudos to this race director and the volunteers, and community for getting this thing so top notch in such a short period of time.

Best non-major marathon I've run

Just got home. Super weekend. Very flat course (98% flat but not totally flat). Beautiful course (campus, lake, nice neighborhoods, downtown). For a medium sized race, the course support was very good. One of the best post-race parties ever. Things to fix next year....we came the the quarter marathon on Saturday to watch a family member. We all showed up hungry intending to buy an armband. If are not selling armbands on Saturday, be clear about that in the book. Also, access to the start corral was not ideal. There was no where to enter but the very back, so the fast runners had to wade through several thousand runners to get up toward the front. A few gates along the side would be appreciated. Finally....the water stops were frequent and appreciated, but about half were a bit unorganized. Most of the volunteers had both water and sports drink and you had to guess which hand. The first two or three stops had it right....water for the first two tables, powerade after that. But some of them did not get the memo. That is just constructive feedback and very minor improvements for next year to what is already my favorite race. I will be back next year

Great race with a flat, scenic course

This race was amazing. The comments about the course are spot on - fairly scenic, very flat (except that one overpass at mile 1.5 & 24.5), and great crowd support. Course gives you the highlights of LSU and some beautiful old neighborhoods. The neighborhood sections had the potential to be really boring, but crowd support made all the difference. It especially commendable since it was only 38 at race start, yet tons of people came out to cheer. I stayed at the Crowne Plaza (one of the host hotels) and took advantage of the shuttle bus to/from the start. It worked out great and made for one less thing to have to worry about. Pre-race communication was excellent with regular status e-mails. Give some serious thought to splurging on the VIP package - separate bag drop, VIP recovery area with 3-4 massage therapists, free champagne & amazing food. Plus you still have your six stamps for the regular food vendors! Entertainment at the Finish Festival was superb.

Nice race with an awesome finish line

Based on comments on the conditions of the roads in New Orleans, I decided to pass on the Rock and Roll marathon and go with the Louisiana Marathon. The expo was the average size for a mid-size race. Plenty of free parking at the nearby casino and an information desk with lots of helpful information about the area. I was able to park for free within a half mile of the start. The 1st half of the course spends a lot of time around LSU. It would have been nice if the mascot could make an appearance. The roads need some work and I saw a runner go down around mile 4 due to a pothole. There was very good support from the neighborhoods. The best part was the large selection of food and drink and after the race. There was a tent dedicated to vegan vendors. It would have been nice if you could get a shower at a local facility but not all races have this arrangement. I wouldn't come back specifically for this race but I would run again if I am in the area at race time.

Add to your must run list!

Everything you've read about how good this marathon was is true. As an out of towner, I felt welcomed the moment I approached the Convention Center for packet pick up. Such a good small town feel to the area and event. Packet pick up was smooth. Race day weather was near perfect. I arrived at the back of the corral about 15 minutes before start, and was able to easily walk up to the 4:15 pacer before the crowd compressed toward the start/finish line. Great course, especially in and around LSU as well as the old neighborhoods. Small, but enthusiastic crowds. It's like the neighbors just needed a reason to get together on their lawns and have a party, and you are that reason. Official water stops seemed like they were nearly every mile in some stretches, with lots of unofficial water stops too. Thank you for the beer around Mile 23 ;-) The post race festival was the best I've ever experienced. Great vendors providing so much great food. Oh, and can't finish my comments without mentioning the Elvis sighting just after Mile 10, with Cadillac! So many good memories.

You Will Like This Race

The Louisiana Marathon was a really nice race from start to finish. We had a great time at the expo. Parking was free in the parking garage attached to the convention center. Organizers placed the packets, shirts and bibs right at the entrance and separate from the vendors. I thought this was a nice touch and made things go smoothly. Tons of vendors and quality merchandise were available for purchase. Race morning was as effortless as I've experienced. Parking was again free and only a short walk from the start/finish line. So many port-a-potties available, there were no lines. No corrals, I do advise getting to the start early so you get line up at your preferred position. Course was flat and fast as advertise. Only hills were the bridge we went over at around 1.5 and then again around 24.5. The bridge was steep, but very short. Running through LSU Campus was gorgeous and the trip around the lakes were scenic. First half of the course was much more scenic than the second (as is often the case in marathons). Split from the half was early at around mile 10.5. From there the course went through neighborhoods. Nice finish as you make the final turn around 25.5 and run toward the capitol building for the last 3/4 miles or so. As much food and drink on the course as anyone could ask for. Fans were sparse, but some of the most enthusiastic spectators I have seen on a marathon route. The post race party was the best I have ever attended. Tons of delicious Cajun food options, beverages and live music. Medal and race shirt are solid. This race is a great choice to race Louisiana.

Overall great race - with a few tweaks really grew

I really enjoyed this race. The course was very nice, particularly the first half that was in and around LSU and a small lake. The second half was mostly through neighborhoods but they were nice with shade trees, etc. It was quite flat, the only real elevation of any kind being an overpass at the beginning and the end. There was plenty of water on the course. I would have liked a Gu stop before halfway but since they provided a detailed course map ahead of time that wasn't a big deal - I just brought an extra one with me. My biggest criticism was the portajohns. The half marathon and full marathon run together until about mile 11 and while the two races were together the lines at the portajohns were way too long. They had them spaced out pretty well but there just weren't enough. It's a shame to miss a PR because of time spent waiting in a partajohn line, And on the marathon only section they ran out of TP in a few. Spectators were pretty sparse but traffic control was great and all other aspects of the organization were really good. Fabulous finish festival, and lots for kids to do. The only other suggestion I would have would be to add an information station at the Expo (which was also good). Overall, I would recommend this race.

One of my favorites.

I was blown away by this marathon. The organization was top notch the entire way through. The app was great, as it provided everything I needed to know and allowed my wife to track my progress. The course was beautiful, the water stops were plentiful, and the people in BR were so friendly. I can't tell you how many people were handing out king cake, champagne, etc... The medal was well done. The expo had so many vendors and goodies that it might be the best one I've ever attended. The food was incredible. The vendors provided great food, and the idea to give each runner a bracelet for six items was really smart. The only area for improvement is the start. It was pretty hard for people to get to the front if they were running for time. Also, the course was fairly crowded until the 10 mile mark when the half split off. Because of the number of runners, I would highly recommend a staggered start. You would really only need 3 or 4 different corrals to make it a little less crowded on the course.

Loved this marathon!

I had a great experience in Baton Rouge, and thought the marathon was top-notch. There was a lot of communication before race weekend, there were hotels close to the start/finish line, and I thought the course was beautiful. I loved running through the LSU campus, gorgeous neighborhoods, and with friendly people on their lawns cheering us on. The crowds weren't large, but very friendly and happy to see us. Some of the college boys dressed up in costumes and climbed on their roofs which was hilarious. There were so many aid stations! The support on the course was terrific. I really loved the race t-shirt, too...made of bamboo fibers, soft and NO advertising on the back! The Finish Festival was fabulous...jambalaya, gumbo, good local beer, etc etc. The course is flat, but still interesting. I would highly recommend this race, and had a wonderful time. I have very few negative comments at all...but the starting corrals (or lack thereof) were a mess. Luckily everyone managed to find a spot, but it was pretty disorganized. My only other complaint was with the Hilton where I stayed. My room looked out onto a bar which played LOUD music well past midnight, so not much sleep for me. My suggestion: if you plan on staying downtown near the start line (which is very convenient), be sure to ask for a quiet room when you check in. I know some rooms looked out on the river, which would have been much better for the night before the race. All in all, a great time and a terrific marathon! Highly recommend!

Excellent

A nearly flawless race. A good size expo with very nice race merchandise. Bib and shirt were at the start of the expo, so it wasn't necessary to wander the expo looking for them. Free parking both for the expo and race day. We were able to park a few hundred yards from the start/finish area. Lots of porta potties pre-race, I was able to use one just minutes before the race without waiting. Very nice flat course, especially through the first half. Highlights included going through the LSU campus and a long loop around a lake. Picturesque finish heading toward the capitol building. Many official water stops and more unofficial water stops than I have ever seen, thanks to all of the kind neighbors who supported the runners. The best post race celebration I have ever seen with beer, local cuisine, and no lines! Outstanding live music as well. Very nice cotton-like shirt, and a solid medal. My only complaint is that some of the water stations were congested as they were placed on narrow parts of the course. There were probably more stations than were needed, but maybe not on a warmer day. If you are visiting Baton Rouge, be sure to check out Tin Roof Brewing Co., they make an excellent IPA. Great race!

A wonderful flat, and beautiful course

This was my second marathon and was such a well organized event! The expo was easy to get your bib and tee shirt at along with many wonderful local vendors. The event is the same weekend as the Houston Marathon which could be the reason for the lack of national vendors (Brooks, Mizuno, etc..) The course is fantastic! Couldn't have asked for a better day with the start in the mid-30's and high in the low 50's. You start at the capitol, Run next to LSU Tiger Stadium and around LSU lakes, and finish back at the capitol. When you get to the longer miles in the marathon you go into residential communities which do an amazing job of supporting you when you get into miles 16-24 of the race. With the event being young (5 years) it doesn't have the crowds a Twin Cities or Dam to Dam might have. Overall a wonderful event for anyone who has ran a few marathons or runs them 3-4 times a year! And of course cant miss the post race food!

Best after party and well organized race

Every part of this race, sign up, expo, race, and after part is extremely well organized. Every part went very smooth. There was tons of traffic control provide by Baton Rouge police. The after event part was excellent. They stayed late, had tons of food, and great live music. Crowd support was a little low, in my opinion, but that isn't why I run these events. A large section of the race is on the LSU campus, which is nice. It circles Tiger Stadium and a large lake on the campus. I've done New Orleans and this event. This event is much better.

Best finish line ever!

The expo was fun. Not huge but had everything you would want to see. We stayed at the Marriott and logistics getting to and from were a breeze the people were so friendly. Both before and after the race and on the course. The course was beautiful and easier than most. I had a good finish time as did my friends. The finish line festival was the best with all the local food which was free. We had a full lunch, lots of great local music too. Definitely recommend this race!

Average Marathon/Race as continually improving

This is typical flat and fast course with minimal scenery and a few spectators along the course. At least this year they had food when you finished as first two years there was no food left for anyone that finished in over 4 hours. They did have beer at least every year that people finished. The 4:25 pacer was fantastic as always. Not much done for Legacy and basically ignored going into the 5th year which is sad. Having done 1,000 of races, they need to get more experienced runners more involved in the organization of the marathon. Overall needs lots of improvement and hopefully in a few years this race could be a top 50 marathons in the US.

very good overall

Very good aid stations and post race food second to none. Close to hotels. Easy to get to the start. Start corrals need improvement. Corrals should be based on time and not who lines up first. Half marathoners should start after the full marathoners. The first half mile is on a road under construction. That should not happen. Too many people for a road filled with potholes and uneven pavement.

Well organized and supported.

Recommend this marathon. I stayed at the Hampton Inn just 3 blocks from the Expo and 3 blocks from the start. The race began on time and the corrals moved forward very quickly. The support on the course is second to none. Even local residents set up tables in their front yards offering king cake, etc. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Agree with all positives

This was my 6-th marathon and I loved it. I agree with everything nice that is said below - great flat scenic route (I improved my PB by 15 minutes), very friendly and supportive spectators, perfect weather, unsurpassable Finish Festival, very well organized, ... If anything could be improved - I would add some fruit in the 'energizing stations'. Bananas at least. But I was fine.

First Class Event

Of all of the races I've done, this was the best organized except Boston. Extremely impressive, especially only being it's 4th year. Post race party and food was the best I've seen. Beautiful course, mostly flat, and the weather was perfect - PR conditions all the way. Not a ton of spectators, but the ones who were out were extremely supportive. I'm generally not a fan of any types of out and backs, but the stretches in the 2nd half that were out/back were well designed and it barely felt that way - except for the enthusiatic support from runners on the out portion as I was headed back - that was neat.

Small town marathon with big city flare

I was so pleasantly surprised by the organization and expo for this race. While this is not a big race, the organization is better than even the biggest races. Other race directors could learn something from this race. The course showcases the best of Baton Rouge. The course is nice and flat, which allowed me to PR. Now, let's talk about the finish... What a party! Tons of food and entertainment even for the very last marathoners as I stayed to cheer on the 6 hr-plus marathoners.

Great Race

Believe the talk...this is a great race. The course is flat and fast and very scenic especially around the lakes. Everything about this race was extremely well organized and well run. My reason for the three stars for spectators is only because not a lot of people came out for this. However, the ones that did come out were wonderful and very supportive!! The post race celebration featuring live bands and assorted restaurant foods was by far the best of any marathon yet.

One of the best overall marathons I have ran. (27th marathon). Pros: expo Pastas dinner- incredible speakers Start of the race organization Flat and fast course Well marked mile markers Crowd support for a small race Post race food and festival Finishers medal High tech shirt Cons: Nothing, IMO any complaints re: this race would say more about the author and less about the event.. Outstanding marathon

I have run over 35 marathons and this one I would highly recommend. The course was flat, fast and it ran round a lake with beautiful southern mansions, and huge live oaks lining the course. The food/beverage/music after the run was top shelf, in a very nice open area near the capitol. The hospitality couldn't be beat.

I really enjoyed this race.

Loved the race even though the temperature got a little warmer than I was expecting. Expo was nice. Lots of vendors and well-organized packet pickup. Also nice that just a short walk away was the MS River and veteran's museaum/memorial complete with the USS Kidd (Navy destroyer) and a couple of old warplanes on display. The course was great, especially the first 10.5 miles. Running through LSU campus and around that lake was beautiful! The warm temps made me a little sick by the finish so I didn't get to take advantage of the great after party and all the great food, but it was a really nice finish festival.

Lived up to the hype

This race has been listed in Runner's World the past two years as one of the best new races. It did not disappoint. I'll start with the only negative-they ran out of much of the food by the time the 4 hour marathoners finished. I'm not a huge eater right after a race, but I feel bad for anyone that is and finished when I did or after. Now for the pros. -Flat course! The overpass at miles 2 and 25 is just that-an overpass. To call it a hill is a disservice to hills. -Weather. 50-60 degrees and low wind. I am always cold and went out in a tank and shorts. -Crowd support. This was way better than I expected for a marathon this size -Porta potties everywhere and no line at the start -Postrace onsite medal engraving. I hadn't seen this before. -So many aid stations -The streets were not as bad as advertised. I was paranoid about this from comments from previous years. I emailed the race director. Any bumps were spray painted. As long as you pay attention, you are fine. No different from any other urban race that I have run. -Separate finish lines for the full and the half. -Finish Festival. Great location and great entertainment. I've never seen so many people just hanging out and enjoying themselves after a race. (The weather didn't hurt!) -Nice sackpack, medal and tech shirt. -Free temporary tattoos with the race logo -On race morning the capital building was lit up with the race logo. Very cool!

Sets the bar high

One of the best races i've run ever (hundreds overall). I'm going to give my constructive criticism to indicate the only small details that need work for hope the director reads to improve for 2015, because everything else was excellent. 1) Put Powerade and water in separate color cups so you can tell what you are grabbing 2) Separate the half and full the last mile of the course with cones so it is easier to get into final straight-away stretch. 3) Better website directions to pasta dinner night before

Fun Race

This was my second marathon...way flatter than Atlanta in the fall and thus I PRd by 23 minutes, which was fun. The start was a bit of a cluster (no speakers in the back of the corral, and you couldn't hear the national anthem. I think the gun took some people by surprise) and there was some confusion as to whether there was actually a shuttle from the Crowne Plaza Hotel (as advertised on the marathon's website)...that could certainly be cleared up in the coming years. Expo was nice...it was the first one I'd been to so I don't really know what to compare it to, but seemed OK to me. The race was good. Like I said the course is pretty flat. There are several out and backs, including one long one towards the end, which I thought was kind of cool cause you got to see the lead runners. The fans that came out were great and there was a ton of gel, shot blocks, oranges, water, powerade, etc. They only had clocks on the half mile mark and the finish, which annoyed me at first, but by mile 3 I didn't really care. The finish festival was awesome...great food (although they ran out of Crawfish Tamales!), the medal and shirt are fine. One small thing - this is Baton Rouge! After the awards ceremony, they had a '2nd line' band, but all they played was motown covers. They were fine, but maybe some zydeco/local flavor in there would be more appropriate. But whatever. Just a couple really small things I'm sure they'll figure out: -There was a shortage of safety pins...a bunch of people only got 3 in their bib packet and they didn't have any at the gear check. Combine that with the aforementioned shuttle problems and some people were pretty stressed before the start. -I bet it has to be a logistical nightmare, but any chance for race morning packet pickup? The expo closed at 5 on Saturday...and SE Louisiana is pretty far from a lot of places. I came from Nashville and had to get out of town by 6:30 to ensure I'd get my packet. Had there been traffic or anything I'm not sure what I would have done. With so many people coming from out of town (49 states I think they said), having a race morning pickup option, or something to that effect, would make travel a bit easier for those of us coming from out of town. Overall though, I had a great time.

Run This Race!

This race, and its organization is amazing! The road can be a bit treacherous, especially in those lovely oak-shaded streets. The oak trees that give such great shade, also have massive roots that can raise the streets in places to cause one to trip if looking up. I know, I did it once. Thankfully no injury except a small bruise to my hand. Do the 5K the day before and bring proof that you finished to the runners assistance after the marathon. You will also receive a laminated 'gumbo serving tray' as an extra award! The finishers medals for the marathon AND 5K are very nice. The course, other than the condition of the streets outside of the ones shaded by oaks, are great. The LSU campus is pretty, and running by the lakes are scenic as well. I highly recommend this marathon. Especially since the weather in Louisiana was wonderful, compared to much of the northern USA, and with the flat terrain, is easy to train for. The police did an outstanding job of helping cross intersections, and the volunteers were terrific! Thank you Baton Rouge!

Absolutely gorgeous run through a beautiful city.

This was one of the most enjoyable marathons I have experienced. It was relatively small, but had all the amenities and great organization that I expect of the older, larger races. The course takes you from the Louisiana Capitol building through downtown, LSU, the park lakes, and some of the most beautiful residential streets of the city. It was one of the most scenic races I have done...and one of mine was Big Sur. The water stops were plentiful and volunteers did their jobs well. Crowd support was awesome, many folks staying out to encourage us turtles. If you are working on 50 states, do this one for your Louisiana race. You will not regret it. For you jackrabbits, it is a fast course, even though the winning time might not indicate that. For those travelling into BR, you might want to rent a car, even if you are staying in a downtown hotel, because the restaurants and action are not in the downtown area. I loved it. You should do it!

Excellent marathon!

The Louisiana Marathon is a great winter race. The weather is usually quite good that time of the year, and it didn't disappoint this time either. Some thoughts- the expo was small but easy to access and well organized. The gear check was well staffed and done quite well. The corral system was comfortable and I didn't find myself dodging many people at the start. The course and scenery is spectacular- the half course is stunning along the LSU lake. The only real negative is the uneven pavement in many places. You definitely had to be careful! I suppose I didn't like the blue Powerade (blech) or the bridge hill just before Mile 25... but all of this was minor compared to the overall experience

Undiscovered Jewel-A Perfect BQ Race

Pros: 1. Excellent Pre-race Communication and Expo 2. Splits texted to your iPhone real time during the race. 3. Fast, fast flat course with Excellent Signage and PERFECT weather. 4. Plentiful aid stations well organized. Water/Powerade/Gu/Fruit. Plenty of well spaced 'powder rooms' 5.Outstanding Crowd Support. I counted 4 well-stocked (unofficial) bars dispensing adult beverages along the course. 6.Outstanding professional pacers which I've only seen in marathons four times the size of this one. 7.Outstanding Finish has you pumped up and sprinting the last quarter mile. 8. Post race food and beverage worthy of a gourmand with an overeating problem. 9. Elegant technical t-shirt and swag bag which you'll actually use later. 10. Really beautiful finisher medal. Cons: Need More Music especially after the Half.

Top notch winter marathon

I was very impressed with this race. Weather conditions were perfect (52-60 degrees), and the course was surprisingly pretty, winding through the downtown, by the river, around a lake, past LSU and through some nice suburban neighborhoods. The course is mostly flat except a bridge at miles 2 and 25 and a few insignificant speed bumps along the way. I stayed at the Hilton, which was about 3/4 mile from the start. There was no wait for a Port-a-John before the race. The course was fast and traffic control was perfect. The course was not crowded. Although I was 33rd, the out and back portion allowed me to see those several miles behind me, and I did not see any real congestion on the course. Short sleeve technical shirts were okay, and the finisher medals were huge and ornate. Awards were 5 x 7 metallic plaques suspended from a ribbon and a poster for the race. Post-race food was local and excellent. I usually can't stomach anything immediately post-race, but it smelled so good, I had to have some. The Hilton had an airport shuttle, so that saved on cab fare. There was a coffee shop across from the Hilton, P & J's Coffee and Tea, where I bought breakfast for race day the night before, and I would highly recommend the scones. The Expo was walking distance from the Hilton. There were few detractors from a great marathon experience, but the road surface in the first few/last few miles was one. Also, the water tables were short, and there was no consistency in whether water or PowerAde was first. Volunteers tended to drop cups quickly, and I wore about as many cups as I drank as a result. Near the start, with temperatures hovering around 50 degrees, I did not appreciate this. It also meant that I went through several of the 22 or 23 water stations with no water, which became an issue for me later in the race. The cups were also almost empty several times. Late in the race, you share the course with the slower half-marathoners. While I did not find them to create a physical obstacle course like in some races, mentally it was tough to be struggling through running the last two miles and see so many people walking. Finally, I do not remember seeing any information about bag drop until I received an e-mail the morning of the race. I jogged to the start from my hotel, so this wasn't an issue for me personally, but I could see how it could be, particularly if weather conditions weren't ideal. However, all in all, I would highly recommend this race.

Worth running

I chose this marathon for my Louisiana marathon because of the many positive reviews online and by the Marathon Maniacs. Overall it was a good experience and I recommend the race. BY FAR the best thing about the race was the number of aid stations!! I hadn't seen than many since the Boston Marathon. Travel tip: stay at the Hilton as they have a free airport shuttle and are closer to the race than the host hotel (Belle). Also, most restaurants were closed on the weekend and we couldn't find a grocery or convenience store within walking distance so keep that in mind. There was a great breakfast place across from the Hilton. Pros: -plentiful aid stations -beautiful flat course -enthusiastic volunteers -nice expo (but crowded/need bigger space) -excellent pre-race communication -nice medal -overall good traffic control (with 1 exception) -plenty of porta-potties on course Cons: -road was REALLY rough in some sections -hardly any food/drinks for marathoners despite heavy pre-race advertising about what would be available (I couldn't find ANY water after the bottle I got at the finish line) -course hard to follow in some sections -downtown was desolate on the weekend -course map online was not zoomed in enough to be able to follow in person if you wanted to drive it ahead of time. Provision of turn by turn directions would be great. If some changes are made (most importantly having food/drinks available for marathoners as advertised and rough sections of road marked with orange cones), this marathon could be close to perfect. We were blessed with amazing weather and the course is beautiful overall. I recommend you give it a look!

One of my favorites of the 26 I've done so far

Wow, and this is only Year 2. I'd heard great things, but the driver for me was that (1) I wanted a January marathon and (2) I needed Louisiana for my 50 states. But those great reviews were spot on. Here's what I really liked: 1. Great Course. A really well-designed course that goes through the downtown, down to LSU, around the beautiful University Lake area and through miles of shaded neighborhoods. Those big, shady live oak trees were godsends, keeping the course cool. 2. Great support. Plentiful, well-supplied aid stations. The roads aren't lined with fans, but clearly, the locals know the race is going on- it's a big deal locally. Almost every road was closed with significant police/traffic support. I saw one car run a barricade only to be ticketed by a local cop. Thank you. 3. Easy Logistics. I had no trouble getting here from DC via Dallas, and BTR is drivable from New Orleans. Took a cab to the hotel from the airport, then walked to the expo, restaurants, the farmers market, museums, and most importantly, to the bag drop and start line only 10 minutes away. Easy, easy. 4. A bargain. The race came at a good price point: I paid $80, but got a hefty $26.20 military discount; they offered Maniac and 50 Stater discounts too. I got a great deal at the Hotel Indigo- very close and convenient. Airfare was reasonable to BTR and after the cab from the airport, everything is walkable. 5. VIP treatment. I loved the post-race VIP tent with great food and beverages- all open to Maniacs. And there were lots of us there. But Maniac or not, I felt warmly welcomed in Baton Rouge. 6. Great Winter Weather. It was sunny in cool, with early morning temperatures in the low 40s rising to around 60. We 'lucked out' with no rain, but an absolutely superior day to run. Hidden gems like this one don't stay hidden for long. Would I run this one again? Absolutely- one of my favorites.

Beautiful first half, second half kind of 'meh'

Pros: * Excellent organization * PLENTY of water stations * Friendly volunteers * Friendly spectators, albeit not that many * Excellent post-race. Very tasty food and drink * First half of the course was very beautiful * Long out-and-back during the second half made it easy to cheer people on and say 'hi' to people you know Cons: * Second half was kind of 'meh', mostly running through residential areas. * Second half somewhat poorly marked, making it a little hard to know where to run. There were little pink arrows, but not always easy to see. I highly recommend this race.

SPECTACULAR!!!

I ran the inaugural Louisiana Marathon and it was so good I came back for 2013. The organization, volunteers, and course security were better than last year!! This race is organized by runners for runners!! The course has a good variety: downtown, LSU, around a lake and then the out and back in beautiful shaded residential neighborhoods; a great way to show off the city! I don't repeat marathons very often, but this is one I might do year after year as long as the race doesn't sell out to a race company and take away the wonderful flavor of this race. Speaking of flavor: the post race party food and beer were superb! The icing on the cake was the VIP treatment for Marathon Maniacs!!

Awesome race for a BQ!!!

If you are looking for a great Boston Qualifier marathon, this is a great choice. There is parking available near the start/finish, ample 'facilities' near start and overall, just a stress free experience. The roads in the first mile or so have quite a few of potholes (so watch your footing), but after that no issues. Flat course with exception of overpass to navigate at mile 1.5 and again just before mile 25, but nothing extreme...so this course is FAST. Scenic course around multiple lakes, and thru scenic neighborhood streets with large trees that provided shade. Great race weather in 2013....temps in mid 40's at start. Perfect! I BQ'ed by over 4 minutes, so I was thrilled. Will definitely be back for this race and bringing more friends with me next time! They also had great awards! Tech shirts and jackets, and even hats to first finisher from each state (which I was thrilled to earn). Great Job Louisiana Marathon!

Perfection, down to the last detail!!

Of the 17 marathons I've done, including some 'majors', (Boston, Chicago and NYC), this ranks in my top three. In the weeks leading up to the race, the communication via email and Facebook was outstanding; weekly and often daily motivational quotes and photos were sent to runners. I sent a few questions through private Facebook messages and was answered immediately. Upon checking in at the Hilton, I happened to meet the race directors in the lobby, who welcomed my friend and I to Louisiana. Craig Sweeney personally delivered welcome packages for my friend and I to our hotel room. The race expo was small but had some excellent vendors, and we enjoyed getting a free 'finish line photo'! The food at the pasta dinner was good, but for $20 we were given only one small plate of food. This would be my only disappointment of the whole weekend. On race morning, there was a huge spotlight on the State Capitol building of the Louisiana Marathon logo! The gear check was indoors and many people were waiting in that area because it was chilly outside (about 44 degrees). I used a portapottie 20 minutes before the start of my race and didn't have to wait in line!!! I loved that some of the music playing before the start of the marathon was jazz; you would just never hear that anywhere else. When we first entered the LSU lakes area, the sun had just come up and there was mist coming off the lakes. It was absolutely breathtaking and several runners stopped to take photographs. After the half marathoners split off, I expected the race to get very quiet, but was pleasantly surprised that the spectators appeared quite consistently, and were very supportive! I was wearing a Canada singlet and got a TON of cheers for Canada! The water stations appeared literally every mile, and local residents were also giving out fruit, donuts and candy. There was one water station where the volunteers were young girls on a local track team; before getting to them, an adult supervisor announced that we were inspiring her athletes! This gave a huge boost to my race. Between miles 12-22, the streets were covered with a canopy of beautiful oak and magnolia trees, and the homes were spectacular. It was a truly beautiful place to run. The finish line was incredibly exciting, and I loved having my name and home-city announced when I finished. I didn't have to wait in line for photos or to get my gear back. I didn't mind the walk to the post-race party because walking is the best thing you can do after a marathon (and it was only half a block!!) What is evident about this race is that it's organized by runners who understand the real needs of marathoners and don't just cater to the half marathon, such as many of the larger races in the U.S. There was a lot of TLC put into the race and all you have to do is read the comments here on Marathon Guide to see the results. I could not be more impressed with the Louisiana Marathon; it was the best way I could have chosen to start my 2013 running adventures!

Organized, flat marathon

I ran this race as my Louisiana marathon and I'm glad I did. Its a very impressive race especially when you consider its only the second year for the race. The expo was just what'd you expect from a mid-sized race (900 full, 1800 half) like this. Enough booths to maybe catch a deal or buy a last minute need but not a mammoth all day shopping event (fine by me). Parking was free and I got in and out effortlessly. Race morning was also stress free. I arrived just before 6:00 (7:00 am start) and easily found free parking. I was able to use the port-a-potties up to 6:45 with very little wait. I didn't use gear check as it wasn't too cold so I can't comment on how that went. The course is advertised as flat and it certainly is. We hit a few overpasses but otherwise even folks from the midwest couldn't complain. One thing to be careful about is the road quality the first mile and a half or so. It may be the worst I've ever run on. I saw 3 people fall. Its made worse because of the normal early race crowding so its hard to see the potholes and cracks until you're upon them. This is only the first mile or so and after that I feel the roads are in very good condition. In fact I worried that I might encounter the same bad roads the final mile or so (a scary thought when you're so tired at the end) but they were fine. The first half of the race is very pretty. We wind thru the LSU campus and thru some parks around a lake. There were some very nice views of the rising sun shining off the water. The second half of the race is pleasent enough but hardly scenic. Its mainly run thru a series of neighborhoods that do get a little monotonous. There is also a long out and back section from miles 15 to 22 that is mentally taxing. There are plenty of water stops. In fact I bet there were more than I've ever encountered. They all had sports drink (Poweraid) and many had gels. Also the poweraid flavor was changed up from stop to stop, a nice touch. The stops were not all set up the same way however and all the cups said poweraid even if they contained water. I know it sounds nitpicky but late in a marathon when a runner is tired it really helps when every stop is the same and the cups acurately reflect their contents. I thought there were enough port-a-potties on the course and the race directors wisely put more the early miles. So many races don't get that. I had to catch a flight so I wasn't able to go the post race area but it seemed to be a lot of fun. I was handed a bottle of water at the finish line but there was nothing else. I would've loved a bananna or some other simple post race food right there especially since I couldn't make it to the main food area. I gave the fans 4 stars. I admit that I'm grading on a curve but I was very impressed with how many folks were out for a smaller race only in its second year. Clearly the directors are doing something right to drum up community support. You get a nice tech shirt and a very nice medal.

Excellent race, but need better post-race support

This is definitely one of the best organized race I had participated (#27)! Course is absolutely beautiful and flat, and the course support was unmatched at any other race! We were blessed with perfect weather as well. The only comment I have for the race directors is to give the marathoners better post-race support! You really have to look hard to find the jambalaya available, and there is nothing other than a bottle of water readily available for the marathoners who finished around 4 hours! No sight of oranges/bananas or anything else.

Best finish line party ever!

Kudos to the race organizers of this event - they did a fabulous job. What really set this race apart from the others I've done was the finish line party. Hands down the best post race party I've ever attended - a never ending supply of beer, jambalaya, ice cream, cochon du lait, red beans and rice, gumbo, and a dozen other local specialties. The music acts were great - the Hot 8 brass band was fantastic. I am from New Orleans and the party was very much like a mini Jazz Fest, only less crowded, more affordable, and better food! Highly recommened it for anyone outside of Louisiana looking for a destination race.

Great job Louisiana!

I can not say enough great things about the Louisiana Marathon. We had a beautiful course with lots of shade, perfect weather, supportive spectators - even the BRPD cheered us on, tons of water stops, great mile markers, nice expo, the list goes on.... This was my first race in my home state. So proud of Louisiana for putting on a great race!!!!

A great marathon!

This race was exactly as advertised wiht a very accommodating staff, more than friendly runners. The weather was perfect and the course was interesting and relatively flat. The aid stations were well stocked with lots of enthusiasistic volunteers. I would only ask that the water stops have some consistency with the order of water and poweraid Actually, this is a very petty issue on a more than well orchestrated event. I highly recommend it!

Louisiana can be proud of this race

The staff has proven for two years in a row that they can organize and execute a high quality race. The abundance of volunteers and support was much appreciated. Packet pickup and expo was easy. The course is improved and still includes the very beautiful scenes of the capital city. As much water, powerade, gels, fruit, port-o-potties, etc. as a person could want. The crowd support is even growing, which is great. Nice tech shirt and cool medal. The after race celebration appeared to be outstanding. No detail was ignored in my opinion. This is a must do Louisiana race.

Pros: 1) beautiful course 2) flat course 3) beautiful weather 4) nice shirt and medal 5) nice after party 6) conveniently located hotels (at reasonable prices) - walking distance to race start and finish 7) could wait indoors before race 8) aid stations every mile with gels available at a lot of them 9) name announced at finish line 10) easy packet pickup (very organized) 11) great pacers (I did not stay with pacer after mile 17, but Heather had us exactly on pace) 12) strongly recommend staying at the Hilton at the Capital (later checkout at 1:00 p.m., but I was not ready to go until 2:30 p.m., but they still did not charge extra) 13) volunteers at packet pickup, aid stations and after the race were awesome! 14) traffic control was extremely well done...never felt concerned about safety Cons: I don't have any.

50 Staters...This is the race to run for Louisana

I signed up for this race based on last year's reviews and so glad I did. Nice small airport, easy town to navigate, and walking around downtown was great. With regards to the race, the pros: 1. Lots of water stops. And they changed up the poweraid flavors at each stop. 2. Expo small but efficient. Even allowed you to exchange shirt sizes. 3. Plenty of parking downtown to the start. 4. Start & finish line in same area. Walking distance from downtown hotels. 5. Lots of free food at the finish line, available to spectators too. 6. Overall the course was nice, the first part was a bit mundane, but once you hit the LSU campus and around the lake, that was enjoyable. Cons 1. They ran out of chocolate milk even before the half marathoners had finished. Can't imagine the marathoners were too happy about this. 2. Pasta dinner was okay, not great. Two pasta options (but you could only have one), ran out of bread, buffet closed before you could get seconds. 3. After exiting the finish line area, it was a walk back to the post race area. Oranges & bananas left on a table for anyone to help themselves, including spectators. Same goes for the food. Hopefully they didn't run out of food for the marathoners. 4. Host hotels claimed to offer late check out but only to the first handful of folks that asked. After that, it was a noon check out. 5. Lots of potholes. Overall, it was a great weekend. Perfect weather, nice course, well organized race, especially since it was only their second event.

My favorite so far

If you want to run a scenic, flat* (there is one overpass that is out and back so you pass over it at mile 1.5 and 24.5), fast course, come to Baton Rouge. The weather has been perfect this time of year for 2 years in a row. I had a great time and enjoyed the entire course. I didn't make it to the after party b/c I was going to lunch with my family but I saw the spread and it looked great. I'll def be back to this race soon. Here's a breakdown of my thoughts. Pros: *Very organized *great communication via Facebook and email *Beautiful course *Lots and lots of water/powerade stops *Lots of food on the course *Amazing start/finish location *The spectators were great, neighborhood residents were friendly Things that could improve: *the expo was cramped, need a bigger location with more signage telling people how to get to it. *More signage on race day for port-o-potties, start, etc. It was a little confusing to get to. Once I found them, the lines were really short though. *I would have like something at the finish line other than just a bottle of water. I know the finish festival was huge but it was a good walk away and runners need access to something, even a protein bar or bagel immediately after finishing.

Lovely!

Wow! If this is Baton Rouge's first attempt, I can only imagine how great this run will be as the race continues to grow and improve. The expo was small but had good variety and nice merchandise. The course was absolutely gorgeous. Having flown in to New Orleans and driven, I had a pretty bad impression of Baton Rouge from the highways. The course was 100% gorgeous - from start at the capital to the loop through the U, the lovely homes, the downtown areas, and so on..... What a pretty town. The radio announcer at about mile 8 was a riot. The added touch of handing out candy was fun. Although there weren't lots of spectators, I felt those that came out were very supportive of everyone. The finish was great - from food to massage and general support. Excellent work! Kudos to the organizers and to the city government for its programs encouraging health and exercise.

I'm pre-registered for 2013

For an inaugural event I was so impressed by 2012 that I'm expecting big things for 2013. The Louisiana Marathon in Baton Rouge 2012 featured the best post-race food I've ever sampled; restaurants providing good portions of both cajun and New Orleans gumbo and other varieties of food I'd never eaten. I volunteered for packet pick-up on Saturday but was put into merchandising instead (blah), but volunteering means doing what's necessary to make matters organized and that's exactly was this inaugural race had as an advantage. 26.2 finisher medal was average, the black technical shirt however is awesome and I use it in other races. I'll be in Baton Rouge next year.

Flat and Fast

Pros: 1.) Good technical T 2.) Great finishers medal and original/unique poster awards 3.) Downtown start/finish 4.) Expo/finish festival were really good for an inaugural race. 5.) The state Capital building and surrounding grounds were interesting Cons: 1.) Had to run with 1/2 marathoners at multiple points throughout the race-weaving in and out of slower runners is frustrating 2.) We stayed in the Baton Rouge downtown area but it was kind of dead, very few stores were open, not very many restaurant options.

Excellent inaugural race

This was the first running of the Louisiana Marathon and, for an inaugural event, it was VERY well organized. Pros (many): cool looking bibs with runner name on them so spectators could cheer us by name; scenic first half of course around big lake and through LSU campus; mostly flat; good placement of fluid and gel stations; really nice tech shirts; my favorite race medal yet; chip timing; beer at the expo; beer at the finish! Cons (I am assured these will be addressed next year): pasta removed from buffet before we could get seconds; narrow streets at the start made for crowding; railroad crossing about mile 12.5 had a train arrive during the race and dozens of us had to wait on it! (May have cost some people including me a PR :( If they can devise a course that doesn't cross actively used railroad tracks, I would definitely run this race again!

Louisiana's new marathon destination

This was a great race and only has room to grow. The expo was small, but it was nice to meet the pacers and get a free 'tat'. The shirt was well designed, but my wife was disappointed that they had run out of her size, even though we registered early. Starting in front of the State capitol was a nice touch. Try to get the governor to shoot the starting gun next time!!! The course was scenic and well supported by staff, volunteers and police. Baton Rouge is much prettier than I expected. I plan to return next year.

This was my Boston Qualifier and I got to do it in our Capital City! For a first time event, I thought it was done very well. The course was awesome, safe and fast. I will definately do this one every year if it continues. There were spectators throughout the course which really means a lot to the runners. Great food and beer afterwards. The medal is first class! Thanks for a great race

A gem for an inagural event

Overall grade A- Pro's Great scenic fast course, Excellent shirt w/o sponsors! And a medal that also serves as a bottle opener Marthonpacing.com pace teams really are awesome, way more personal than the up tight pacers of Cliff Bar Great post race party, please add non-alcholic beer, 2 beers after a marathon and we may be drunk Great start/finish venue excellent capital bldg worth seeing b4 or after the race Cons Widen the start area too crowded I know it was 1st yr however get the neighborhoods out, although the police were all over and providing plenty of traffic control Don't expand this event too much 1500 marathon 2500 1/2 cap would be great Put this race down as a MUST!

Absolutely a MUST-DO event!

I can't believe this was the first year for this event. It was amazingly well organized and well run. The shirts are high quality, the finish festival was a blast, the course was beautiful, there were lots of spectators and friendly encouraging police officers directing traffic. It's hard to find much bad to say. The weather is top notch that time of year and I was stuned by how much the community got behind the event and came out to support the runners. Many great volunteers including student groups from LSU and Baton Rouge Police directing traffic. The Facebook page is also great and they do a wonderful job keeping people informed and answering questions quickly. Drop what you are doing and get to this event!!

This is a Keeper!

Usually I would stay away from an inaugural race, preferring to let them work the bugs out. I gave this race a chance and was glad I did. The race directors should be complimented on the excellent job they did organizing this event. This is a great flat course, plenty of enthusiastic volunteers at the water stops, good Louisiana food at the finish, plenty of free parking, nice expo, great shirt, and COLD beer! I would highly recommend this event. A pleasant surprise and overall great experience.

Excellent Race. Awesome Support.

This was the inaugural race, but the organization was excellent. Start area had plenty of porta-potties and easy bag check. Finish and meet-up worked well. Perfect weather too - early January is perfect in Baton Rouge for that Gulf Coast state race. A really nice flat course, with enthusiastic aid station volunteers and plenty of cheering locals along the way. Baton Rouge PD covered every traffic intersection. Only improvement I can suggest is better signs/warnings of the half/full course split-off points. Stayed at the Belle of Baton Rouge and they were host hotel with the expo. When I asked, originally no race shuttle was planned, but after a discussion with the manager, they pressed their own bus into service on the Sunday morning. What a way to step up for their guests! All around a great experience. Check out this race for your Louisiana marathon!

Great race and awesome Party!

For an inaugural race, LAM was absolutely amazing. Great T-shirt, nice medal, plenty of water stops, nice size. And once the race it done, it's party time. I can honestly say that LA Marathon had one of the best parties I have ever seen after a race. Lots of beer, probably 10 different kinds and yes, you can have as much as you want. Food was amazing, with all the typical Louisiana's favorites like jambalaya and great pulled pork. We had absolutely perfect weather, good bad, and a nice size park to spread out. No complains here at all. But, a few kinks to work out to make this event absolutely perfect. And some of them are minor... Goodie bag - contained nothing but the bib, then you got a T-shirt. I realize it's a new event and you need more sponsors, but anything, coupons, samples, etc. would be nice. Maps - yes, there was an email and all, but it would be nice to have a course map available at the expo. We stayed at the host hotel - breakfast - you are on your own. They sell croissants, but if you're not a fan (or simply don't want to experiment on the race day) you are out of luck. Also, there were really no other options walking distance to get anything. So... either make it clear that nothing is there or just have a vendor at the start line selling bananas or bagels. Lots of money could have been made had someone thought of it. Re-joining half marathoners several times - this is something that will be a huge issue if this event grows in size. Half and full start at the same time, which is fine. However, then they split up, and meet again... and split up and meet again, and... Each time you meet up slower group of runners/walkers. This year it was relatively easy to run around them, but... Sport drink - make the stops consistent - water first, then sport drink or the other way around. Also, not sure if it was the cups or what, but some of them smelled awful, industrial smell. Also, some were very weak and water was very warm. GU - if you offer only two flavors, stick to bland ones like vanilla. Finish line - only had water bottles. It should have sport drink at the very least and someone pointing to the party area. A lot of people get rather disoriented when done with the race, so this would be helpful. Food at the finish line - although phenomenal, it was quickly gone. All the slower marathoners were stuck with rice and beans, if that much. Solution - keep the area for runners only. That's it. Really loved the race and the comments above are just to make it even better going forward. One more word of warning - there is hardly anything open in Baton Rouge on Sunday. I would recommend moving the race to Saturday or - opening more businesses that weekend.

Nice Winter Marathon Choice

For an inaugural event, the organizers did a great job. Nice, scenic, flat course; plenty of aid stations, energetic volunteers. For the most part, there were spectators.cheering on the runners throughout. Nice finish, nice medal, results posted in real time and photos up the next day. Also, the weather in Baton Rouge this time of year is PERFECT for running. The pacers use an even pace strategy. I prefer SmartPacing which allows a warmup and figures in fatigue in the last few miles and also incorporates terrain so I didn't use the pacers. I would definitely recommend this event as a good winter marathon to run.

Great first time event

This was an amazing first time race. None of the horror stories of running out of this or that or whatever. There were a few glitches I hope are corrected. First, there was no readily available paper map. The race guide was available as pdf but even then, the full course was hard to discern because the map was broken into segments. Second, due to the map issue, it wasn't clear where water or Gu would be. I realize gels are a luxury but... Finally, the finish was sorta confusing. I knew the area and right where to go afterward but the easiest way to get to the finish food and beer was to cut across the course, which could be problematic. But all in all, a great race. Spectators were thin in places but the ones who were there were extremely supportive. I've never seen so many random folks offering water on the side of a course. I hope this turns into a great race and great alternative to Houston for those looking for a January marathon in the Mid South.

Fabulous inagural race!

Absolutely loved this event and hope to make it back every year! Only negatives I can think of were the 4:00 and 4:30 pacers went out way too fast and if you were running sub 4:30, you got stopped by the train. The food, beer, and music at the finish were awesome! The pictures were posted the next day and you get a free finishers certificate. The Indigo and Hilton Hotels are both walking distance to the expo and start. Just wished they provided a later check out and breakfast.

Great Inaugural Marathon/Great Future

From my perspective, everything with exception to finish line food, went off without a hitch. Of special note: Reasonably priced pasta dinner ($12), Jeff Galloway as speaker at dinner (I'm a fan), free breakfast buffet (nice for stayovers), EXCELLENT course protection by police), nice tech shirt, plenty of excellent local brew, NO FOOD at finish line if you were a 5 hour+ marathoner (What was the point of the food bracelet?)

Impressive inaugural event

For a first-time marathon, the Louisiana marathon was astonishingly well-organized and successful. I would have given 5 stars throughout except that the course had a slight issue: because marathoners left and re-joined the half-marathoners several times, marathoners running 7:10 or under ran straight into a wall of 10:00 pace halfers. This caused a great deal of dodging and slowing and was very frustrating. Other than that, though, the course was pretty and mostly flat; the support was superb and well-stocked (water and powerade at all the plentiful stations and two gels on the full course) and the logistics were a breeze. Props to the organizers for ample port-a-potties at the start, beginning on time, and having a first-rate after party. There was excellent live music and a whole host of food and local beers. Best of all - the awards were art prints and fleece jackets! Major awesomeness! I love getting useful awards! Thanks for putting on a great first-time event...I will be back.

Great Marathon

Since I am from LA, it was a no-brainer to sign up for the inaugural running of this marathon. The organization was flawless from start to finish. The route was great, with some of the best landmarks that Baton Rouge has to offer (i.e. Tiger Stadium, LSU Lakes, State Capital/Downtown area, beautiful homes, etc...). The course was well marked and all aid stations were well stocked with water and powerade. Gels and clif shot blocks were given out later in the race. The finish area was well organized. The food area was great. Various types of hot food, 8 different types of beer on tap, and live bands, all enjoyed in the park next to the State Capital Building. Perfect weather for the race. The crowd along the course was a little sparse at times. There were designated cheer zones that had a lot of spectators. My one complaint, and it is a minor one, is the frequency that the half and full marathoners merged to run together. At least 4 times during the race, the half and full merged, causing the full participants to adjust their stride on the open road to a much more conservative pace due to the excess people that suddenly entered the running lanes. All in all, the marathon was excellent and I would recommend it to anyone that has not run it before.

South Louisiana at It's Finest!

Thoroughly enjoyed this race; very scenic flat course with minimal traffic; great volunteers and spectators; very well organized especially for a first race. Super nice race shirt and cool medal too! A big sign on the gear check trailer and more food in the finishers corral would make this a perfect event!

Excellent Race

My first inaugural! These folks did a fantastic job. There were plenty of water/Powerade stops, the course was shady in many places and lovely (so many pretty homes in BR), and in 26.2 miles, I only saw one unguarded intersection. I had some fabulous gumbo after the race, and the band was pretty cool. I liked the location of the start/finish also. The local residents were very friendly and came out to cheer. Several decided to play some music, which I thought was sweet. I ran into an unusual problem. Most restaurants and businesses in BR are closed on Sundays, especially in the business district. That lack of planning on my part (usually I look for a hotel with breakfast) meant I was running my race on a McDonald's Fruit and Yogurt Parfait. That did not feel good.

Great

Awesome race. Very well organized. The energy level from the spectators was high, mainly because there were a lot of LSU students volunteering and cheering along the way. One critique is there was not enough food at the end. But because this was the first race it is hard to gauge how much pizza, etc will be needed. Overall loved it and will run it again next year.

So glad we picked this as our Louisiana race

Awesome event! Stayed at the Belle and took their shuttle to the start. Flawless. We were a little late and couldn't find the bag drop off. Gave it to a volunteer and it was taken care of by super high school national guard boys. Pretty neighborhoods and a nice tour of the campus. Almost missed a turn that wasn't staffed with a volunteer and noticed several other runners did miss it. We are 4:30 runners and got stopped by a train. Nobody at our pace seemed to mind much. Super party although there was only one food station left. Bring some cash and take a bike taxi ride back to the hotel. That was icing on the cake!
