Well organized state race
This was our first race back post-Covid and we couldn't have chosen a better one. We've found any race that's organized by a running group is typically done very well and this was no exception. This is the longest running marathon in Nebraska and Lincoln is a great city to visit. Unfortunately, they had to cancel the Expo due to Covid.
The course provides a nice tour of the city and normally finishes in the Lincoln Memorial Stadium (where the Cornhuskers play) though we finished in the track & field stadium. The half and full run together for entire time until right at the end where anyone doing the full can see and hear the finish line party as you trudge away to do another 13.1! Lincoln has a lot of nice greenways. You run on them some, but there is more street running with coned off traffic. The last half of the marathon is primarily an out and back. The aid stations were very good and well stocked. I'd describe the fan support along the course as strong. The swag included a medal, t-shirt, and marathon themed face mask (let's hope that ends up being a one-time keepsake)!
Lincoln is a fun college city. The downtown area around the Historic Haymarket is always hopping, a very fun atmosphere. There are lots of other attractions in the area, the zoo was particularly enjoyable. And we actually escaped from an Escape Room for a change! You can get a good feel of the race, place and taste from our YouTube video at Race The Nation.

Very pleased with this 26.2 event!
Lincoln is likely not your idea of a destination marathon. Maybe it should be. The course, 1st half was full of positive energy from the city. You even run past Nebraska's unique 14 story state house. The 2nd half was a semi lonely stretch out and back finishing up in Memorial Stadium, home of the Cornhuskers football team. Loved hearing my name and town announced over the loudspeaker as I approached the 50 yard line. CHOCOLATE Milk, fountain Pepsi products, gatorade, were a nice touch right off the field under the bleachers. Medal was great compared to to years ago, mediocre by todays standards, but you don't run a marathon for the medal anyway. Right?

Really enjoyed this race!!!
I was worried about the the last half of the race after reading previous comments on this site but must say I was pleasantly surprised! I would have liked a little more shade on the back half but overall I enjoyed the course! Spectators and volunteers were amazing throughout...couldn't have survived the hot day without them. Thank you Lincoln for a wonderful experience!!!

Loved Lincoln
From registration to results and everything in between was so smooth, communication was superb, volunteers are the best in the busness, and community support was off the charts. This city is very proud of the it's name, with T-shirts, medals and awards all dispIaying Abe Lincoln. I believe he would be very proud of this event. I even had a great burger at Honest Abe's. I only gave 3 stars for the course, which is really nice, but just for me too much concrete for this 63 year ol' body.

Not for slower runners
The wave start is nice, unless you're a back of the pack runner. Then you start 45 minutes after everyone else and can guarantee you will not have water stops or course support for the back half of the race. They were closing down water stations by mile 5 and by mile 11 there were no more volunteers/course signs. Thank goodness for random strangers with coolers of water and ice. Got to finish line with an hour left before the course closed and they'd taken down the finisher photo spot and most of the recovery stations.

Well run in a nice community
I was very happy with the Lincoln Marathon. Although the temps were rather hot during the 2nd half of the race, they did a great job providing plenty of fluids along with cups of ice as well. The course is ok through out the town, but the fans more than made up for an ok course. The community really comes out and cheers you on. The finish in Cornhusker stadium is cool. Well done Lincoln!

Heat in the Heartland
Top Ten Reasons to Run Lincoln (Despite the mentally-tough 6.5 mile finishing out and back and the 2017 hot temperatures)!
10) Spectators galore
9) Catching a Cornhusker baseball game on a beautiful Friday evening on marathon weekend
8) Vincenzo's Ristorante in Haymarket District for pasta loading
7) The beautiful neighborhood along Sheridan Road during miles 4 and 5
6) Pretty flat
5) It's well-established and therefore well-organized...2017 was its 40th anniversary
4) Huge participation by Lincoln Police Department managing intersections
3) Zillions of amazing and friendly volunteers and National Guard- this is a real community effort that they are proud of
2) Cups of Gatorade and water at aid stations have lids and straws making it so easy to drink while running
1) Finishing on the 50 yard line of the University of Nebraska football stadium - awesome

for the back of the packers...
No point advertising a 6 hr limit when the 5:30 pace team can't start until 45 minutes after the gun. That being said, don't let anyone turn you away at the half marathon split point. Ignore them and go for it. You'll be fine.

Great organization for before and during the race
I highly recommend the half. The runners get to wait in the Cornhusker indoor practice facility before the race. You can see the wave starts from the facility, minimizing the time waiting out in the elements. It rained in 2016. They provided lid covered w/straws drinking water, to cut down on contaminated water. The volunteers were great. Spectators were great considering the rain. A few rolling hills through out. You finish the full and half the football field. They provided very detailed race results. I found out I passed 117 people, that was a stat I was never given before this race.

A well-run event
Kudos to Lincoln Track Club for putting on a fine event from packet pickup to the free post-race meal and awards ceremony in the Cornhusker Club.
Runners AND their families are treated to a free spaghetti feed on Saturday evening and another free meal for them and their families after the race. Food was surprising good for such a large gathering.
I was toward the end of the pack, but there were still people out there playing music for the runners. The community really supports the race when it goes through the residential areas early in the race.
The race started at 7 a.m. and my corral didn't start until 7:35 a.m., but I knew that would be the case, so I didn't have to stand in my corral that long. Plenty of pre-race porta potties.
Even though my interest in Husker football has diminished like my foot speed, it was still a charge to sprint through the tunnel and race to the 50-yard-line at Memorial Stadium.

Well organized nebraska race
The 2016 race was cool and rainy, but crowd support in the first half of the race was excellent. The half marathoners outnumber marathoners 8 to 1, so crowd support dies out after mile 13. Still, volunteers cheerfully staff the food stations and most have Gatorade (in cups with straws), orange slices, and sports gels. The finish on the 50 yard line in the Cornhusker's stadium is tremendous and post-race food and support was strong. The city of Lincoln takes pride in hosting this race and it shows. Overall, a well organized race that I would recommend to anyone.

Better half than full
I recommend this race for the half, but I'm not a fan of the full. 90% of the runners do the half, so there's a lot more support and spectators on the first half of the course. That part is also much more scenic and shaded. The second half of the course is an out-and-back along a bike trail, with minimal shade. Slower runners will have a 30-45 minute delay before crossing the starting line, which is a concern for those who are worried about the heat. There's also a fair amount of congestion on the first half of the course, especially around the 10k mark.

Enjoyable, Well Organized Marathon
I ran as part of the National Guard team and was put up in a motel very near the start/finish line so I cannot speak for parking. The course was decent and was lined with spectators pretty well throughout the half-marathon. The design of the course is well thought out to allow any full marathoner to switch to the half if they should choose to. 2nd half had less spectators but by no means empty. Police support at intersections was fantastic. The finish line became a bit congested after the medal but prior to reaching the refreshments and they may need to widen this area out a bit. After that little bit of congestion it was very well organized with medical and massages. I would say one of the best organized finish areas that I have seen thus far.

Really a Half Marathon Race
This race, while billed as the Lincoln Marathon is really a half marathon race with some full marathon participants thrown in. Of the nearly 10,000 finishers, nearly 9000 finishers were for the half. The second half of the course is sparse, aid stations too far apart, and not many runners. As part of my 50 state quest (30 marathons completed) I selected Lincoln but in hindsight should have selected another Nebraska race. Not enough focus on the full marathon.

Great Experience
Really enjoyed my first marathon experience.
Pros:
The runners, fans, and organizers were all friendly
Aid stations were stocked; water and gatorade provides all with lids & straws
Starting at finishing at Memorial Stadium was a good experience.
Tons of fans for the first half
Interesting route the first half
Pacers with very visible signage made it easy to get in the area you needed to be in
Massage afterwards was awesome
Cons
Pretty crowded, particularly the trail piece early on
The back half of the race was really boring with few spectators to cheer you on
Somewhat difficult parking situation at the University, although probably should've located a shuttle

Great race, highly recommended.
Good organization, excellent crowd support, nice course-although it is NOT flat. I ran New Orleans, that's what flat is, LOL! But the few rolling hills are easy enough to deal with. oh and row of National Guardsmen standing at attention at the end-kind of makes you feel good :)
Pros:
-Good organization
-Not gimmicky
-Excellent traffic support by the police!
-National Guardsmen handed out long stem red roses to female finishers..and the men that wanted them I guess :)
-The Medal is a Big Penny! (yes the medal is only about the size of a half dollar, but if it was bigger it would look cheezy I think)definitely one of the neater ones I've gotten.
-Free massage at the end of the race
-Excellent water/fuel support
-Relatively flat, rolling hills no big deal even if you didn't train for them
-Crowd support was fabulous and friendly and there were people almost everywhere.
-Out and back was ok because you could see the National guard team members Hauling butt to qualify and it was encouraging
-Nice tech-T, the sizes for women are in actual womens sizes which is super nice, but seemed big. They had a table for trading sizes, but I couldn't trade for a small because they had none for trading, so if you're small...sign up for small!
-Expo hotel was awesome, pool with Hot Tub, staff was knowledgeable
Cons:
-The trail. Oh that trail. While it would be a wonderful running trail alone or with 3 runners, I was with the 4:20 pace group and it was a clustered mess. If your a middle of the pack runner, try to be patient through this part, passing is dangerous along the uneven grass on the side.
-The free massage ended too early for the later runners. I finished around 4:30 and as I was getting massaged they were asking their massage volunteers to please stay a little longer for the slower runners. Maybe they could have shifts for them? (but they were AWESOME to volunteer anyways and I got a good light post run massage)
-Some people complained about the unpredictable weather. Was in the 80's the prior weekend and low 40's for race. Seemed perfect to me for race weather, ran the whole thing with earmuffs on because of the wind though.
Overall good experience, worth the trip.

I'd recommend the half.
I'd definitely tell friends to run the Lincoln Half. The spectators were amazing (second only to Fargo), thick all along the Half route and genuinely engaged and cheering. As a UNL graduate, I like being back in Lincoln. The trail along Hwy 2 was congested, but I knew what to expect and just passed people on the grass. Packet pickup was a cluster at 6:00 Saturday night. Simple logistics could solve that bottleneck. Expo needs to be held in separate or larger room. Absolutely need Half Marathon medals. It's not fair to the Fullers when a Halfie like me gets a Marathon medal. Would make a killing if they sold Half shirts, stickers, etc. along with the full stuff. Shirts were poor quality, but I had a good enough time at the race and have enough race shirts, that it's not a big deal to me. Overall, Lincoln has a great thing going. They're at a point where they need to respond to the growth, though, not squander it. A big race is totally different than a small race, and they haven't caught up yet.

Great little marathon in the midwest!
I ran Lincoln this past Sunday for the first time. Great small marathon. Good course with some rolling hills. Great spectator support. I ran for the National Guard time trials and it was awesome seeing all the troops out there supporting the race and giving out water/gatorade. Very nice dry fit women's race shirt. I have to agree with the previous comments regarding the narrow bike path. There were 10,000 runners this year and about 6,000 of then ran the half marathon. There was congestion on that narrow bike path. The finish was the coolest finish- running into the Husker stadium to the 50 yd line as the announcer called out my name and where I was from. Medal was nice but they could make it a little larger. This was my 8th marathon and the saddest little medal...size of a medal I get from a local 5k or 5 miler. Overall great race. I will be back to do it again next year.

Course changes needed, Finish was a bummer!
I agree with many others that the course along Hwy 2 needs to be looked at as well as the second half of the course. Being my first marathon I didn't know what to expect. Very congested on Hwy 2 bike path. Not enough support on second half, both fans and food/water. My goal was to finish, and I did under the time allotted, but at the finish, there was no food left, no announcer, no massage, no nothing... Please have medical staff around for us fools that come in after 5 hours, we are most likely in more need of help than the faster, in shape runners that are done in under 3 1/2 hours. Maybe you should tell the hoard of 1/2er's to leave a little fuel for the marathoners still to come in.

Course change needed at bike path
When the course hits the bike path, there has always been a congestion problem. I don't understand why you don't move this part to Hwy 2, which goes along the path. Just close one side of the Hwy and congestion wouldn't be a problem. There isn't that much traffic at that time of day anyway. This would eliminate the need to restrict the race to 10,000 runners and generate more income for the marathon/charity.
Very little spectators during the 2nd half. Also, don't care for the down and back on the 2nd half, makes the course very boring and easy to lose motivation.

2012 Great
Had a great time. Pre & Post Race meals were great. The course wasn't as flat as we thought but not bad. Biggest issue was distance between H2O stops in the 2nd half on a hot day (1.5-2 miles apart). Otherwise well organized. Course/Fans are better in 1st 1/2 than 2nd part. Passing the finish with 13.2 to go was hard/many dropped out there. Had a nice feel to the race.

Good, but let's make it better!
I returned to my home course for the 2012 marathon and enjoyed it and the fans as I always do. The course is better in the final 5K as it is diverted off the streets and onto the Antelope Creek trail which runs along the waterway, making it safer and avoiding more traffic than the pre-2010 course. The finish in Memorial Stadium with National Guard members congratulating you is outstanding. However, a few suggestions:
1. Start Marathoners first, about 30-45 minutes before the half-marathoners, stagnating start times and preventing crowding at the start.
2. Distinguish between full and half marathon medals as was done in the past, either by size and/or color to show some differentiation between the races and the recipients.
3. Allow a partial refund for those not able to run the race and allow a re-sale in order to generate more revenue and avoid more bandit runners. I understand those not running for the past 2 years has stood at around 1600.
4. Expand the capacity to grow the race by adjusting logistics to accommodate even more runners, as the demand is clearly high for this race and people will continue to participate if adjustments can be made. Otherwise, people will continue to be turned away and will become dissatisfied and not recommend it to other potential athletes who might otherwise wish to run it.
5. Also, considering altering or rotating the designs on the medals from year to year to keep those who enjoy it from coming back for a different surprise each May!

More of a half than a full
The course would be a very good half course, but only fits 3 runners (barely) side-by-side from about mile 6 for the next few miles. To prevent congestion they held back successive groups of runners at the start. I was in the 9 minute pace group, and it took 14 minutes to get to the start. (Organizers said not to worry, as chip time would show correct time, but chip timing didn't work.) Straws with cups was a waste early on for anyone used to drinking from a cup, but useful later if you wanted to carry it for a half mile or so. 1st half had shade, 2nd half mostly in the open on concrete. Plentiful gatorade, oranges, water, GU. Overall, a better half than a full.

Nicely organized and loved the lincoln downtown
We had great experiences and loved about things that was organized. First time in Lincoln Nebraska for race and good time. Loved how we were set up by pace to start, the many water stops (with lids and straws!), Lots of people. Amazing. We got nice hotel just 2 block from State capital building TownHouse Extended stay.
(facebook.com/extendedstayhotel) great location and walking distance like 5 minutes to Marathon start/finish point. In downtown after race we had good time. especially for a runner from San Diego.
Love <3 the Lincoln, Hotel and Downtown.

Nothing to show for it
The course was fine, good aid stations.
The sad part is I've got NOTHING to show for this race. The shirt was way too small, and felt very cheap. They had a booth to swap shirts at the expo, but everyone was having the same problem, so there were no larger shirts available. The medal is the smallest I've ever received for a marathon (or a half marathon) and NO photos. I was out there for 5.5 hours, and ASI got NO photos of me??? Ridiculous. Finally, the race course was open for 6 hours. I finished in 5:31. No food, no volunteers to tell me where to go, nothing. I guess they forgot to count in the 1/2 hour it would take us to cross the start line when they offered a 6 hour course...

Very good Midwest race
This was my 3rd Lincoln Marathon and it was the best of the 3 that I've run in. This race continues to get better each year. This race for 3 years has had great weather. The course is flat for the most part except for 3 hills. The fans are great. The support is not quite as great in the second half but those that are out are awesome! The race finishes inside Memorial stadium as well. It makes for a very nice finish. The only negative for this race in my experience is the bike path around mile 6. It narrows to accommodate 2 maybe 3 runners so passing is much more difficult in this part of the course. Beyond this I would recommend this race to anyone. This race gives you a lot for your marathon dollar.

Fun run!
What a fun experience! The organization was great! Packet pick up was a breeze, the fans were awesome, and I love the straws in the cups! For future races, it would be nice if fans could be on the field cheering, as I think that would help feel more connected and inspired at the end of the race. Thank you, LTC!

Great Organinzation - Tight Course - Small Medal
Organization Great job, a lot of emails before the marathon. I really shows when a running club is organizing the marathon. It has that nice personal touch.
Expo - Small made it easy to pick up number and be on your way.
Pre Marathon Free parking abound the starting area. Plenty of port potties and being able to use the bathrooms in the stadium was a nice plus.
Marathon - For the most the course is flat. It was very tight running for parts of the first 13 miles. The course was a pretty typical Midwest route. I did enjoy the lay-out a nice balance of residential, parks, and lakes. Had just enough turns to make it interesting. Finishing at the 50 yard line of the stadium was a highlight. Great day temp was just about right a little windy but not too bad. Pace Group was excellent, spot on at the 13 mile mark. The volunteers at the water stations were excellent. First marathon I have run where they put straws in the cups, I thought that was a nice touch.
Thought it was kind of odd they capped the marathon at 2,000 runners but only about 1,200 finished.
Post Marathon - food and drink was above average. Plenty of bananas, yogurt, bagels, and pop. Bag pick-up in the stadium was efficient and effortless.
Medal - One of the smallest I have received, about the size of a silver dollar. The running shirt made up for the small medal.
Overall I would recommend running this marathon. They do a lot of things right.

Would recommend this race to anyone
This is a very well run event with a great course. The crowd support is incredible. Lids and straws on the water/Gatorade cups are something other races should start doing. The finish in Memorial Stadium is very cool. I see why this race is growing so quickly.

beautiful race course, excellent spectators
What a beautiful day. Flat course, and many spectators - everyone friendly. I think the course is maxed out at 10,000 runners, as the bike path was a bit crowded; however, no complaints and I enjoyed it completely.

Five-star effort by marathon organizers
With five stars in every category, there are lots of good things to say about this race.
Organizers obviously know how to efficiently quench a big crowd.
With three miles to the first drink station, there was already some spacing of the crowd. With a large number of tables lined up, people didn't have to dive on a small spot.
Lids and straws on the cups makes life easier as does clearly identifiable Gatorade and water.
GU and fruit at aid stations deeper into the marathon are a bonus.
Crowd support was fantastic, especially in the neighborhood sections of the route. But even in other portions of the course there was somebody along to keep you motivated.
For a race that large (nearly 10,000) to offer a free and relaxed pasta dinner across from the stadium was a bonus.
While I didn't run with a pacing group, just having pacers there helped me stay within the right group of runners and not stray out too fast too early.
Finishing at the 50-yard line of Memorial Stadium and being televised on the Husker Vision screen is another feature that makes this run special.

Overall Best Marathon!
This is overall the best marathon experience and value ever. Entry is affordable and the extra's are great. FREE pasta supper for the whole family-runners or not and it was delicious. Flat course. Great organization-STRAWS and LIDS on the H20-AMAZING. Oranges and Gu at every stop after the half. Jumbotrons and a finish on the 50 yd line-which served as a great way for spectators to gather, watch and find us. We got Rock Star parking at the foot of the stadium at 5:55 am-a miracle. Roses, massages, food and showers at the finish. Lots of flushable restrooms in the stadium and coliseum at the start. Gear is amazingly affordable: $20 for a very nice hoodie. Hotel was $35(yes, really) and not too scary-it was full of runners and Mr Patel got breakfast up an hour early just for us runners. I do admit miles 19-20 in the park made me want to kill myself-but that could be just me. And it was unwise to eat biscuits gravy and hashbrown on the way home-snooza-palooza on the interstate.

Great Marathon
I ran this as my first marathon, and it has to be one of the smoothest running events I've been a part of... great pre-race communication, and excellent assistance during the race and just after. I especially like the lids/straws on drinks, pacers, and post-race food/drink availability. Great experience.

Well put-together event. Loved the drink cups with lids and straws so I can actually drink without having to walk. Awesome finish on the football field with flags all over the stadium.

Another great Lincoln Marathon!
Another flawless Lincoln Marathon! The expo was nice; small, but still nice with good deals if you look for them. The race went off without a hitch. Being the largest Lincoln marathon ever at 10,000 runners, it took 40 minutes to get everyone through the start since they'd narrowed it to help ease congestion on the bike path later. I think that worked pretty well. The aid stations and volunteers were awesome, and there seemed to be more spectators than in previous years. The course isn't hilly but it's not flat either. The weather this year was great, even with the head wind coming back to the stadium. The 50 yard line finish on the field was cool. The roses for the female full finishers is a great touch. The food and massages after rocked, bag pick up was easy, and the shower at the Coliseum after was blessed with hot water.
Tiny, whiney, insignificant complaint: The full marathon and half marathon had the same medal. In previous years the half finishers got a smaller medal that said Half, the full finishers got a larger medal that said Marathon. Not to be nit picky, but I ran farther, I want better bling! ;) I am guessing the reason for it was because of the early sell out of the half, the organizers knew people would sign up for the full and drop to the half, just to get in. That's my only negative comment.

Great Post-Run Support
Pros:
- End on 50-yard line of UNL football stadium, on the big screen
- Well organized, spaced out and staffed water/gatorade/gu stops - straws for drinks! straws for drinks!
- Online real-time race tracker (need to add txt/phone support)
- Pacers were great
- Successful staggered start
- BIGGEST PRO: Post-run support. Plenty of food, free massages w/ very little wait time, ice wraps, thermal blankets and very friendly staff/volunteers that really respect your achievement. Can't say enough about their help!
Cons:
- Shared first half w/ 13.1 runners can make it tight at times, but I didn't have to break pace too much really. It is kinda inspiring to see the halfers turn-off knowing that your run has a couple hours left.
- Holmes Lake out and back for the second half. Out and backs are just a little more mentally difficult than a loop w/ some variety. Considering the the LTC, NG and PD do to keep the streets clear, though, logistically this probably makes the most sense.
Lastly, for this particular run we had +10MPH head-winds for the last six miles. Bad weather can hit a run - no fault of anyone, but if you choose to run this Marathon, remember that it is in Nebraska.

Good Support, Nice People, Awful Medal
The race start was horrible. Participants did not pay any attention to their start time. Walkers and slow runners positioned themselves toward the front, and when you got into your pace they were always in your way. The coordinators have a pace color code, and this should be identified on the bib numbers (or by having different start times for the full and the halfers/walkers. The course was good, with strong support and fans along the way. The route along the path on Hwy. 2 was ugly, but I was told they now moved that. Ending in the stadium was great, but then they route you into the north stadium and exit out next to the east stadium. The walk area was impossible. Runners tried to get to their bags, but they allowed non-participants into that same area and it took close to 30 minutes to walk across to the bag area. I understand people wanting to congratulate finishers, but they should have created a route on the other side of the fence for just the runners and avoided the congestion. Last, the medals for this marathon are PATHETIC. I understand it's to finish the race, but you want to have something to show something for it. For the number of people who run this race, you'd think they'd put some effort into it. I am sure they search all of the bubble gum machines in town to find these medals.

Great run, but room for improvement.
I've run the half many times and finally worked myself up the the full this year.
Good things: Oranges at the water stops! I just couldn't stomach gel that day and the oranges helped. Water stops were plentiful and well organized.
Needs improvement: Expo is in too small of a room, and the packets were empty (just papers - no samples, coupons, nothing). Shirts were paper-thin and had awful sizing. The color and design are not nice either. I thought finishing on the 50-yard line would be cool, but I felt so disconnected from the crowd. I'd much rather have the finish chute lined with people!
Course: not "hilly," but not flat either. Very difficult in the sun around Holmes Lake. If there were any places to change the course, it'd be great to get rid of that hill before the park and run through some shade. :-) Spectators were good. I did Fargo 3 weeks after Lincoln and their spectators were spraying us with garden hoses (encouraged by race directors) and that was wonderful! Would love if Lincolnites were encouraged to do this.
Overall, a nice run, but with the way it's growing, there should definitely be improvements. Also, what about splitting up the start times in corrals, or having the half start 30 minutes before the full (or vice versa)? It's so crowded for the first half.

100% Pleasant
I had a wonderful first-time marathon experience. The fans were more plentiful than I imagined. The water stops were very well manned and the volunteer base was overwhelming. The only downer for the whole thing was seeing cheaters turning around at the timing mat in the park. Boo! The race directors get a thumbs up on this one.

A great race.
I'm relatively new to running and have run the half in Lincoln the past two years. Everything is well organized. The route is good except for the stretch along Highway 2. I know they're working on that. It just gets a little crowded there.
I thought the finish in Memorial Stadium was great. I hope they continue this. A little congested under the stadium, but manageable.
The crowds were great, as always. I'd like to see more support for the full marathoners (I usually go out and cheer them on after I'm done). There are a few lonely spots for them, but overall I'd say the support is great.
My biggest complaint, which is weak but nonetheless a complaint, is about the shirts - and not the color even, but the giant logo on the back. If you're going to do that, just use regular cotton shirts because it defeats the purpose of a technical shirt. Last year's had a large logo, but it was printed on in a manner that left the shirts breathable. This year's shirt was like a giant piece of plastic ironed on the back.

Fantastic Experience!
Friendly people! Fantastic volunteers - friendly, encouraging, and fun! This was my first full marathon, and it was SO fun! The organization was top-notch. Loved the Christian band in the starting area as runners were lining up. Great crowd support for the first half, but the fans thin out significantly in the last half when you need them the most! Is there some way to encourage more crowd support along Normal Boulevard? Also, kudos to Barb, the trumpet player at mile 20, for taking requests - and taking a cue from her, wouldn't it be great to have local bands every couple of miles in the last half?! Also, because I'm a slow runner, all the food and water had been devoured by the time I got to the finish line! Perhaps next year, there could be some saved for us turtles? (Where was the clock at the start?)

My favorite marathon!
This was my third time on this course (once for the half marathon).
I'll start with what could be improved (since that list is short):
1) Narrow, crowded path on Highway 2 in the first half.
2) New finish. Though the finish in the football stadium was grand, it felt very impersonal compared to the old finish where you could immediately connect with family and friends.
3) Poor-quality race shirts. I've never kept a shirt from this race - they're just not comfortable to run in.
On to what I love about this race:
1) Perfectly-spaced, well-manned aid stations that are long enough for a second grab for a cup if you miss the first chance.
2) Lids and straws!!!!
3) Clearly identifiable Gatorade and water. (I've run races where I had no idea what I was taking until I'd spilled it all over myself.)
3) GU and fruit at every aid station past the half marathon turn off.
4) Crowd support (specifically in the second half of the race); not a ton of spectators, but nearly every one had words of encouragement for me specifically - not just generic "go runners" chants. Such a great motivator!
5) Great organization; everyone involved is totally dedicated.
6) Inexpensive registration and generous benefits (free pasta dinner, good eats after the race, great sales on gear at the expo).
7) New this year: pacers!
Run this race!!!

For a first time, it was a great experience
I thought the course was good but I hated the finish. Ending on the field wasn't so bad, but once you got off the field, it was extremely difficult to get through the massive crowd in the stadium. All I wanted to do was get out of there, change, and stretch as soon as possible, but it took forever to get to the other side of the stadium where my bag was. My suggestion would be to limit that corridor to runners only and keep spectators in the stands or out of the stadium.

Too crowded, bad finish, but I love Lincoln!!
I really do love the Lincoln Half and have run it numerous times. This time was the first I had trouble with way too many people bumping in to each other, and I got elbowed several times. The new finish was a disappointment. The runners were herded off of the field and packed under the stadium where the water and snacks were hard to find. It was hot and smelled really bad. It was difficult to find family/friends. I liked the old finish better. Regardless, I will stay faithful to one of the best runs around. Thanks to all of the great volunteers!!!

Absolutely the best organized race I have run!
The pre-race communication was above and beyond. I have never received so many updates and so much information. The Eisenhower in Abilene, KS seemed super organized until this one! Excellent!
The course is great. There is a narrow area, but it didn't bother me. I think they are opening up the road for next year instead.
It was great to have such a big crowd of runners and spectators. I usually run smaller marathons and really loved the volume of this race.
I actually liked the shirts. Not the best screen printing job, but nice fit, shape, and a tech shirt is great. Nice medal.
The finish in the stadium was unique. Water and soda were easily accessible at the end. Water/Gatorade stations on the course were perfect - lids and straws!! Love the straws!
Plenty of port-a-potties.
I will run the full next year. Wish I had this year. I highly, highly recommend this race!!

Nice course; fun, "small town feel" run.
I am a 50-stater and chose to run the Lincoln Marathon becasue it appeared to have more of a small-town feel than the Omaha race. I heard good things about that race too, but I was very happy with my experience in Lincoln.
I really enjoyed the first half of the course - running through rural neighborhoods, with a decent amount of tree shade, and lots of locals running about. However the course hits a narrow bike path at one point, which crowds the runners, and the second half is completely exposed to the sun in the later part of the morning (and on concrete, with few spectators). I saw this course as two very different half-marathons run in succession. The second half was much more difficult due to the change in course conditions and the rising temperature. With that, my rating for the course was three, because I didn't care for the second half - except, of course, for the awesome finish in the stadium.
Crowds were great, but less so in the second half, but they surprised me with where they popped up.
Race organizers did a great job. My only complaint was that the first water stop was about three miles in and the second was close to six miles in. After that it worked itself out.
Lincoln is a very cool, Midwest, college town. I went to a microbrew called Lazlo's, and had possibly the most memorable filet ever. The beer was great too.
I am not factoring this into my review because I think it is silly to consider the t-shirt or medal as a reason to run/not run a marathon... but good grief, that was the ugliest, most awful shirt I've ever gotten. I might need therapy just because I looked at it for too long.
All in all, this is a fun race to do, and if I were local to the area, I'd run it again.

Overall, nice run, wonderful spectators
Overall, this was a good marathon; the congestion at miles 6 -8 is the only reason that I gave the course a "3." The aid stations were well stocked and the cups with lids were great. The packet pick up was quick but crowded. Thanks to the pacers!

Friendliest Marathon EVER!!!!!
It was my 32nd state, and the Lincoln Marathon didn't disappoint me. The course was plain - there was really nothing to see and I don't remember much of it - but there were great, friendly spectators all of the way. A well organized race, and bib pick-up and parking were easy. AND the CUP with STRAW was great!!!! Thanks, Lincoln!!!!

Got a one-of-a-kind award.
I have run this approximately 10 times, and this is the first time I got a one-of-a-kind award. Running along Highway 2, I felt something hit my head. What a deal - a bird gave me an award like no one else ever got. I got a lot of comments and laughs about the bird poo in my hair.

Where is the chocolate milk??
Overall, a marathon I would do again. Great course support. Decent aid stations with water, Gatorade and ice - plus oranges and GU on the second half.
Oh, and a kind lady spectator handed me a Twizzler at mile 23. Thanks, whoever you are!
But:
- No chocolate milk at the finish; what is up with that? The sight of yogurt made me want to hurl.
- Bike path at miles 6-8 is way to narrow; can we get a lane closed on Highway 2 next year?

Enjoyable and exciting!
I came into this year's race aware of the changes but not yet sure what to think. After running, I was pleased at what I saw:
1) The course was improved to divert marathoners on the newly-poured trail along Antelope Creek, which meant less time on the streets and less traffic disruption. Also, I liked the finish at Memorial Stadium on the 50-yard line and the great eats immediately following.
Improvements:
1) Spectators felt a bit distant from the race finishers in the east stadium stands as runners finished at mid-field, so it may help to find better proximity for both.
2) Try to either divert half-marathoners by sending them at a different time (or in waves), especially if trying to accommodate more in coming years, as they make up about 75% of those running.
Finally, the National Guard continues to do an outstanding job in assisting, whether at aid stations for water, at the start line for directions/bag checks, and now at the finish line to meet finishers and assist with medical emergencies. I was proud to be greeted and congratulated by our men and women in uniform, and will take their goodwill after a race over Hollywood celebrities any day.

Great Race!!!!
My first half! I will be back for next year! Love the finish in the stadium! Awesome to be seen on the big screen! I would suggest guidelines about slower/walkers to keep to one side; I felt like I had to zig-zag in in out throughout the whole race! Just a suggestion!

Overall, a very postive experience
Loved the finish in the stadium! A wave start would alleviate congestion along the course, especially on the bike path. The orange slices/jelly beans around mile 10 were a nice touch, but I would rather have had a few more fluid aid stations, as I brought my own gels. I learned the hard way not to park in the parking garage, as it exits onto the marathon course and many of us leaving after the half were (properly) held up until a break in the runners allowed safe exit. Next time I will park away from the course and walk a little farther.

Nice course, good support and organization
I've run the half here twice now. There are a few places that get thin spectator support, but overall it's very nicely attended. Race officials do a good job of keeping you on the course wherever there might be a questionable turn. Water, facilities and traffic control are well done. Straws in the Gatorade are a nice touch. For the most part, the course is two lanes- or a full street-wide - until about mile 6 where you are on a narrow bike trail for awhile, and then the last 2-3, which are single lane with a pretty good side slope.
My only disappointment with this year was the change in finish line location to Memorial Stadium. Friends and family were herded into half of the stands far away from the finish; runners were treated like unwanted guests and hurried off of the field. Initally we weren't even allowed back out onto the field to cool down. I give the course a 3 for this reason. I'd much rather finish out on the bricks like before.

Good one to run for Nebraska
Even with 8,000 runners (most of them halfers), the course was not crowded. They constricted the entrance to the starting mat, which allowed people to spread out for more leg room once they got past it. There were also no hills in the first few miles, which also allowed people to spread out more. Spectators were plentiful and supportive, especially in the first half. But even the back half still had people cheering you on. Course is scenic and showcases the city well. The park with the nice lake around Mile 20 was scenic, and there was a woman playing a trumpet just before that who was taking requests. And stadium finishes are always great! Complementary pasta feed the day before the race was nice, and after the race they had the most massage therapists I have ever seen after a race - I only had to wait for two minutes. The tech race shirt was excellent, and is one of my new favorites. The medal looked like they were trying to imitate a Lincoln penny, so a bronze color would have been more effective - otherwise it was somewhat weak in design in contrast to the shirt. I have never seen Gatorade served in cups with lid covers and straws at aid stations before. I guess they did not want runners to spill on their shirts or something.

Very well organized and superb
This was my second half and I enjoyed it. The finish line inside of the football stadium is great - glad to be part of this great run. I thank all of the organizers, volunteers and city police for helping with the arrangements. Great crowd.

Much improved finish!
OK, this is my "home" race, so I'm biased. But in comparing this to others I've run (five other fulls and numerous halfs), this provides great value, a fast course and a unique finish. I've seen a lot of kinks get worked out for registration as this race has grown. This isn't run by a corporation that is out to suck every dollar from you. It is a good value ($50 for the half, $75 for the full) with a free pasta dinner the night before and post-race treats comparable to other races that cost twice as much.
The finish in the stadium is cool - with the big screen and finishing on the 50-yard line. It was an adjustment, compared to seeing 85,000 cheering fans, but as a life-long Husker fan, it was cool. No, this isn't Chicago or Minneapolis, with a million fans; Lincoln is a smaller city. But what it lacks in numbers it makes up for in volunteers and small packs of cheering fans at various places. By far the best race in Nebraska and comparable to races I've run in Des Moines, Charlotte and even (dare I say) Las Vegas.
They still need to get off of the bike trail, but if that gets fixed, this will be top-notch. I'd also like to see the half get capped like some races and leave registration open to the full marathon runners longer.

Middle America
Do not expect anything special about this race or Lincoln. As a half marathon it would be great, but as a marathon it is somewhat less. The first half of the race and the second half of the race are like two totally different races. The half marathon is crowded, with a lot of spectators, big hoopla, a good course and a lot of support. But after 80% of the runners turn into the stadium, the race takes on a whole new flavor. The course is boring, it is much less crowded, the spectators thin out, and. frankly, it is a much less interesting experience. Do the half, but unless you need the whole to complete a goal, it is just not worth it. Also most of the course is on cement, which is very hard on your feet. Even worse - and maybe exclusive to me - at the turn-around point I tripped and fell, missing the timing pad and having to limp/run in the last 10K. I know the organizers cannot do anything about it, but the uneven pavement proved a problem to me. The expo is small but serves its purpose.
The organizer are a very friendly and helpful group. I owe them a debt or gratitude for letting my friend sign up the night of the expo even though the course was full. The free pasta party was great.
Finishing in the football stadium, having you name announced, and seeing yourself on the Jumbo-tron was very cool.
In sum, as a half-marathon, this would be a great event; as a fun marathon, it was a good event.

The best place to start running marathons.
I ran Sunday in my first ever marathon. The excitement of the finish in Memorial Stadium cannot be put into words. Best thing I have ever done.
Organization was very good. When I laid down in the stadium because I couldn't walk, people were right there to assist me. Great job, Lincoln!!

Wonderful Marathon!
Lincoln really puts on a great marathon! The race is well organized, the volunteers and National Guard members are the best, and the course is pretty nice - bike paths and nice residential areas. Love the lids and straws on the cups at the water stations, and the new finish on the 50 yard-line of Memorial Stadium was awesome!
Huge thanks to the wonderful volunteers and to the Race Directors Nancy and Gary for a great marathon experience!

Fun Race with a new twist for the finish.
Ran the Lincoln half in 2009 and a full in 2010. Overall, this is a great race, the spectators are awesome and very plentiful for the first half of the course, fewer along the second half. The section from miles 6-8 along the bike path is too congested though, and needs to be changed. The finish inside Memorial Stadium was a nice touch, but family is not allowed on the field, so there's a huge disconnect from you and your loved ones. Also, you have to walk all the way to the South stadium to drop off your bag, and pick it up again. Not good when you've just run 26.2 miles. Also not a lot of shade (none) on the second half of the course, be prepared for the blazing sun if there aren't clouds.

A PR is VERY possible in Lincoln!
The Good: This is my second time running Lincoln. The parking is adequate and the field house is open pre-race so you can use the toilets. The course is VERY flat and fast, and the aid stations were well stocked. I ran a 3:30, so I don't know how they were at the tail end of the group. The straws in the cups are a nice touch, and the lady playing the trumpet in the park around mile 20 was entertaining. I gave the race four stars for organization based on the Lincoln Police support. They did a wonderful job at all of the traffic control points.
The Bad: The starting area is very crowded and it starts at a 180-degree bend. The streets are very narrow in the first half and only one lane of traffic is opened in the second half. Returning runners and those going out could and probably did collide. There were several injuries caused by the steep drainage slope of the road in the second half.

Well organized, but...
First and foremost, I was happy with my overall experience (first marathon and BQ). However, they need to have corrals or pace groups set up so 10-minute-per-mile runners aren't lined up in the front. I didn't have a problem with congestion, since I was pacing myself for the first half. The second 13 miles were BORING. Absolutely no crowd support except for family/friends of runners. Porta-potties were very scarce as well. Pioneers Park had ONE water station and it wasn't enough. Overall, Lincoln does a fine job, but to attract more people, they need pace groups or some sort of live entertainment on the second half of the marathon.

Go Husker Nation
This was my 38th state and marathon. What a terrific community effort for this race. Good traffic control, friendly people and excellent water stops. Almost every mile has an incline so it's neither flat nor hilly - it just has a lot of grades. I had a group of volunteers that cheered a group of us all the way in from about the 19- or 20-mile mark. When we would pass, they would hop in their car, honk, wave, yell and meet us at the next mile. That was so much fun and really made my us feel special. Thanks for doing that. What a hoot.
My only improvement or suggestion for this race is that, while they had porta-potties where they said they would, there simply weren't enough. Only two at each area and usually the line was 5- to 10-deep. I lost almost ten minutes waiting for a bathroom. I usually commandeer a tree or bush but the course winds through a lot of areas where there just isn't much cover for that kind of activity. Showers at the coliseum were just awesome. What a fantastic facility that is.
Other than that, the rest is minor with the starting area being crowded and a small amount of food at the end. No big deal. I ate at the airport on the way home. I really enjoyed this race and would recommend it highly.
Thanks to everybody who volunteered or worked this event; it was just top-flight.

Great first half...
I was really disappointed with the Lincoln Marathon. It is clear that the support and organization is focused towards the half. While the on-course volunteers were great, the spectators were sparse and the GU was hard to find (and I didn't train with jelly beans, which I nearly choked on). Most disturbing was the lack of food post-race. I learned later that spectators were allowed to eat the bagels, which were gobbled up ahead of the runners. There was no post-race expo, which is uncommon (no vendors, activities, bands, etc.). Overall, I would stop at 13 next time; the full is just disappointing. Also, they began offering women's-sized shirts only on some websites - leaving me envious, with a men's cut. C'est la vie!

Interesting course
This was a good course with lots of change in scenery. There was a stretch on the bike path that got a bit congested, but the city did a great job of blocking streets for the majority of the race. Having relatively few hills made it easy to keep a strong pace the entire race.
I would have liked more water stations (they were present every 2.5 miles), but there was plenty of time to grab a drink at each station and lots of options (cups with and without lids and straws, Gatorade, and ice). The size of the race was good. I would have liked a little more encouragement from fans, but there were many of them along the way, which was fun. The weather was perfect!

Disappointed
I have heard rave reviews of Lincoln Marathon, and was quite disappointed. Logistics and the organization on race-day were quite lacking:
* There were no parking instructions. Maps of the course did not include side streets, so it difficult for spectators not from area to figure out where to go.
* No pacers.
* Too many runners for such a tightly-spaced course.
There were some positives, though:
* Having cups with straws was a great feature.
* The free pasta party was generous and decent.
* The City of Lincoln is a nice place to visit
Overall, what I expected to be a well organized and fast course was not. Running shoulder-to-shoulder with other runners for the majority of the race was frustrating....

Well-organized and supported event!
Wonderful experience. The spectators and volunteers were great, and there was plentiful water/Gatorade. As it got hot, they offered us deluge cups and drinking cups. As a back-of-the-pack runner, I often came in solo and volunteers ahead would shout to me, asking what I wanted so that they had it ready when I rolled in.
The expo was a bit small and light on service from the vendors, but otherwise, it was an awesome race.
The start/finish was well-organized, with plenty of porta-johns and bathrooms open in Memorial stadium (where there were no lines).
Perfect choice for a first marathon!

Best race in the Midwest
This race was so well done. The organization was phenomenal, the support was outstanding, and the pre- and post-race events were out of this world. For the low entry price, I never expected so much from a race. The course was a little challenging in the second half, and the day turned hot, but it was a great experience. Aid stations were very frequent, especially in the second half, and there were so many spectators along the course. The finish line crew was very helpful, and there was not a wait at all for the post-race massage (at least for those finishing under 4 hours). Absolutely the best race I've ever done.

Fantastic marathon in all categories
What a great experience. Super weather and a well organized marathon. The Lincoln folks are fantastic in every way and provided great support. Part of the course is an "out and back," but it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. It was a little tough on the old mind when you saw a mile marker only to realize that it was for the other leg. It's basically a flat course, which is what I wanted. I am not an expert, as this was only my second marathon, but I would recommend it to anyone.

OK race; nice, small town
Most of the people posting comments are from Nebraska, and have run a minimal number of marathons, so keep that in mind as you read the reviews. It's great that they enjoyed their local race, but....
First the positives:
Lincoln is a nice, small city; my wife and I enjoyed the weekend there.
The police and volunteers did a fantastic job with traffic control.
The water stops were organized and well staffed.
The post-race massage was great.
The overall organization was very good.
The negatives:
There are a couple of interesting areas on the course, but by and large it is pretty bland - mostly through nondescript residential areas and along a couple of parks.
Since the half and full run together for basically the entire half-marathon, there are way too many people for the course. There are a few miles on a bike path where it was extremely congested. The second half was fine.
Overall, I'm glad that I came, and I had a good time. However it's definitely one and done, and unless you are looking to add Nebraska to your states, there are lots of better spring marathons to travel to.

My first half-marathon couldn't have been better.
This was my first ever half-marathon (I am 16 years-old). I thought it was great. I almost felt like I was in a parade because there were people on the sides cheering you on for almost the whole course. The course was great as well - mostly flat with gradual easy hills. They gave times at numerous mile markers. Even though there were 6,500 people, they still made it very organized. The best part came when I got a plaque for being first in my division (19U). I ran a 1:30:56... not bad for a first-timer, huh? I want to do the full next year.

Very organized, great run!
This was my first 1/2 marathon. I thought the event was very organized from start to finish. Loved how we were set up by pace to start, the many water stops (with lids and straws!), the nice people cheering all the way, and all the refreshments upon finishing. A great run overall, but it was not as flat as people say it is. If I run another 1/2 or full marathon, it will be in Lincoln, NE.

Great organization but not really flat
Having done the Navy, Air Force and Marine Corp Marathons, running the National Guard seems logical. The race is really well organized and the aid stations for the second half were well placed. Describing the course as flat is not quite accurate - especially for a runner from Chicago. There are hills.

Adequate, but not great.
The race is fine. If you live within 1-2 hours of Lincoln, I can see making it an annual event. That being said, there is no reason to travel to do this race. The course is flat. A little too much concrete for my taste, but not horrible. The fan support in the first half and last couple miles is pretty good. Miles 12.5 to 15 are a ghost town. Miles 15 to 21 are better, but don't compare to other Midwest marathons like Twin Cities, Fargo, or even Green Bay. Organization is fine, but nothing special. The shirt was ugly, in my opinion, and the medal was average. Massages are a nice perk. Shower facilities were good, but you needed to go down three flights of stairs to get there (ouch).

Crowds!
Thank you to Lincoln for an amazing warm welcome and response to the race! I am absolutely amazed at the number of people that came out to cheer. The course support was first-rate too. I fed off of the crowds... their enthusiasm was contagious.
The trails at miles 6-8 are too narrow for that size crowd. If you're going to use the trails, have the 1/2-marathoners split off beforehand. Also please ask the walkers not to take up the middle of the streets 3-4 wide.
The expo was disappointing. It didn't seem like there was much vendor or service interest at all. There should have been a map to tell you where to park, find the pasta dinner, and find the shower/massage facility hanging very obviously on the wall.
The pasta dinner was very nice and very well done. Thank you!
The start/finish area was well laid out and the restrooms and porta-johns were plentiful.
This was a good race that, with effort on the course and expo, could become a great race.

Fantastic marathon
This was my first marathon and I loved it. The spectators were amazing and supportive! I loved the costumes. I will definitely do this again.

Best ever!
This is my 3rd race here (2 full, 1 half) and this topped the others. Best change this year was telling people where to line up at the start. Fans were the best I've seen too! Organization is top-notch, especially when you consider it is a track club run event with a reasonable price! Great volunteers, great people reading out splits. I wish my performance had been as good as the race was. I still wish that they would get off the bike path, but the wider trail at 27th helps a ton!

Awesome first-time HM experience
Just had an awesome time at the Lincoln race. This was my first race ever, and my first half marathon. Everything was super. The water stops use cups with lids and straws. Didn't have to slow down to drink at all. Fan support was awesome too, throughout the entire 13.1 miles. The only complaint I had was the stretch on the narrow bike path. Too many runners for an enjoyable experience there, so I ran on the grass instead. Overall, a top-notch, awesome experience.

Best One Yet!
I didn't really realize how much I enjoyed the Lincoln Marathon until I ran a few other races. The course is flat and fast and there are spectators everywhere! Usually there are some spots on a course where no one is there, but not in Lincoln! They have THE best setup afterwards, too! Tent after tent of bagels, fruit, H20, you name it! VERY well organized! Definitely one on my calendar each year.

Great experience
I ran the half-marathon, planning on coming back for the full marathon in 2009. What a great city. The race was organized well, the people of Lincoln came out to cheer us on, and the weather couldn't have been better. I'll be back.

Great for a first-time marathoner!
Being a Nebraskan, Lincoln was obviously the first place that came to mind when I decided to run my first marathon. I like running the Omaha Half-Marathon, but I'd never run the full - too boring. I chose Lincoln because I'd heard it ranks right up there with big-name marathons as far as spectators go, and now I believe it. It was SO encouraging to see so many people cheering us on throughout the full 26.2, instead of only supporting the first half of the course. One woman was even standing in her yard handing out donut holes!
I think the course itself was great, and for a flat, little Midwestern college town, I think it's pretty nice to look at too. The old neighborhoods in the early miles are gorgeous, and the Holmes Lake area at mile 20 is beautiful. Oh, and there are not "hills" in this course. There are "inclines." Big difference. It's pretty flat overall.
Lastly, this race really is as well organized as people say. Water stops were always well-manned, and you've got to love the lids and straws. (Great for avoiding splashing the whole thing in your face if you're running and not walking your water stops!) And wow, was there a ton of GU! It was like a giant GU piñata exploded GU packets all over the place by mile 17 or so. (Had they started handing it out earlier in the race, around mile 5 or so, I wouldn't have even brought any of my own!) The finish was pretty smooth - it's always fun hearing your name announced as you cross the finish line. And the post-race massages were handled extraordinarily well. Didn't have to wait too long.
The only thing that disappointed me was that it seems there were no finishers' shirts this year. If there were, I didn't see them anywhere. The "technical shirts" aren't great either, but I can forgive Lincoln for that, since the overall race experience is what matters.

Best value by far
Very inexpensive entry fee. Great, FREE pasta meal before the race. Great FREE pork dinner after the race. Lodging was inexpensive. Traffic and parking were handy. We also got free showers, massages and even free extra t-shirts when we bought some marathon garb. STRAWS and LIDS on the water cups!!! What more can I say?! OH!...and we threw our robe and long-sleeved shirt on the fence at the start, and they were still there when we finished. Wonderful people in Lincoln!

Lincoln - Above Average Marathon
Lincoln: Where the runners are strong, the volunteers good looking and the marathon above average (sorry, Garrison).
Lovely little marathon. This was my 27th marathon and proved quite enjoyable. The course was mostly flat with the few hills providing a nice break for the muscles. Many nice neighborhoods with shade for the first half. The second half was a little more exposed to the sun, but it wasn't a problem with the great weather. The overall organization was pretty good, with plenty of water, Gatorade, oranges and Gu available along the course. Plentiful, friendly and supportive volunteers throughout. My only suggestion is to improve the packet pickup. With 5,000+ runners, a single long line for packets was inefficient and slow. Consider splitting the lines early for full/half runners and further splitting by alphabet to speed up the process. The spectators were not as plentiful as in the megathons, but made up for it in enthusiasm. My highlight was the trumpet player around mile 20. She played "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" as I ran past her, in honor of my Irish-themed shirt. It made my day.

Lincoln Love!
So nice to be pleasantly surprised by all aspects of the Lincoln Marathon! The "red carpet" is rolled out for the runners. Expo is smooth, and all the extras are nice: free pasta dinner, free massages after the marathon, post-party, etc. You start and finish at the "famed" Husker Stadium, and wind through the Nebraska campus, through beautiful neighborhoods, and pass by the state capital and downtown - you'll never feel alone. However, even with 6,000 participants (2/3 half and 1/3 full), it doesn't feel too crowded either!
The people of Lincoln are very knowledgeable about the marathon, and turn out in droves to support runners.
New item: Lids/straws on cups - great idea! Found them to be less messy, and could keep moving with them in my hand instead of having to gulp down the fluid.

Lincoln sets the bar high!
Lincoln is a great marathon, with a scenic route, great organization, and energetic spectators. I really enjoyed the marathon route (will always have a soft spot for it, since I got my BQ here this year!). After running a MUCH less well-organized race last fall, I really appreciate the professionalism and organization of this one. The Lincoln RD understands that marathoners spend a lot of time and energy preparing for the big event - and the organizers gave us a great race.
The positives:
1. Great course, fans, organization
2. Courtesy of all involved - spectators, staff, runners
3. Beautiful course
4. Organized hydration stops (LOVE the lids and straws!)
To be even better:
1. Different vendor for photos (still not available on Thursday after a Sunday race??)
2. Put out pace signs for the race start (just an oversight this year, per the pre-race announcement)
3. Save some carbs for the marathoners... there were just bananas and yogurt out when I finished
Overall: wonderful race, good time, fun place. Thanks, Lincoln!

Awesome race
This was my first Lincoln full - I ran the half last year. By far the best organized of the three full marathons I have run. This would be five across the board if they would get off the bike trail at the 10k mark. The out-and-back to Holmes on the back gets boring, but at least it is flat for the most part. I know there aren't a million people lining the streets like Chicago. But when this race gets three times the size of Omaha, you should know they are doing things right (I ran Omaha last year and this marathon is twice as good - with three times the people!). I'd like to see this race get off the bike trail and expand to 10,000 people some day! Good job.

Loved the Cornhusker Campus!
This was my 36th marathon, and an opportunity to "check off" Nebraska from the 50 states. I was very impressed with the organization and the University of Nebraska connection. What a gorgeous campus, and how wonderful that they opened it up to us for the packet pickup, pasta dinner, pre-race waiting, start and finish, post-race showers, and post-race lunch / awards! My only criticism was that stupid bike path in the first half. Maybe the size of the race has outgrown that course, and an adjustment should be made to stay on the streets (versus cutting to the path). Do NOT miss the lunch / awards after the race: delicious pork sandwiches, pasta salad, chips, cookies, ice cream, cake. If only they'd had beer!

Running Lincoln is a must!
This was my second half marathon in Lincoln and this one was even better than last year's. The spectators and organization are first-class... not to mention the cups with lids and straws. I intend to run Lincoln every year - and you should do the same.

Very much worth it, and family friendly
Well organized, nice pre- and post-race meals (free for family supporters), friendly and flat course (two small hills), highly organized, massages, showers... and these are just a few of the highlights. YOU get a lot, for a very reasonable entry fee. There's a 6,000-runner limit, but you can hardly tell it's crowded. See you in May. Run on.

No complaints! Well done!
After running in some of the bigger marathons, it was nice to run in a smaller marathon. No hassles with parking or transportation from start/finish, etc. We stayed at the Marriott downtown and walked 6 blocks to/from the finish. Could not have been easier! Course was mostly flat. The second half was an "out 'n back," so being a slower runner, I got to see the faster runners coming in, which was nice! Lots of gel and oranges were available. Volunteers and police were great!

We had fun!
This is the fourth time my husband and I have run the Lincoln Marathon (Our previous participation was in 2003, 2004 and 2005). We were a little worried when we heard how much it had grown, but the race was more organized than ever. The pasta-thon was good, the parking was good, and the course was excellent. I was a bit disappointed in the sports expo - I was planning to buy lots of cool marathon stuff, but the room was small and crowded with few vendors. However, we loved seeing Dean Karnazes and running with him the next day. Thanks for everything!

GREAT 1/2 marathon!
This was my first half-marathon, and it was really enjoyable. I LOVED that there was huge support; it seemed like the entire city of Lincoln woke up early to cheer us on! The course was really nice, and VERY flat. I didn't particularly like the probably mile-long stretch just after the 10K stretch; it was a bit narrow for so many runners. Everything else was great, and I highly recommend it!

You do not see anything about the wheelchair racer
You do not see the results for the wheelchair racers. It took a lot for the three of us that wheeled it. People just do not know what the wheelchair people have to do to prepare; we train harder than the runners do.

Fantastic - Improves EVERY YEAR!!!
Lincoln has really moved into the upper class with this race. My first Lincoln Marathon was 2001 and I didn't want to ever come back. Now I have six Lincolns and 22 total marathons under my belt, and I'd recommend it to everyone.
Pros:
The organization
The low entry fee
The not-so-tacky technical shirt
The awesome "Honest Abe' references
The FREE pasta feed for runners, families, and spectators alike!
The first half of the course
The frequency and length of water/Gatorade stops
The straws!!!!
The added GU tables after mile 15 were a lifesaver!
The roses to the female finishers
The depth of awards and the side awards (Lucky 13, 7, Masters...)
The post-race awards party for EVERYONE!
Fairly flat course...
THE FREE MASSAGES!!!!
Cons:
Not really a bad thing, but the expo needs to expand to accommodate the numbers... both in square footage and vendors.
Also, because of the increased popularity, maybe alter the route to run on the road instead of the bike trail.
The 2nd half of the marathon is always the most difficult and especially here, while improving, the wind factor and limited fan support on the out-and-back is still tough.
The brick finish area gets tougher every year... Finishing in the stadium would be the BEST!
Other than that... awesome race! Awesome qualifier for the National Guard! Awesome community support! And it was awesome to see a marathon that still puts the runners and spectators first - versus making money and feeding the corporate sponsors!
Thanks for everything! See you in 2009!

The 2008 marathon was really fantastic.
This is the second time I ran the Lincoln Marathon. I ran the 1/2 marathon last year and that is an experience that I will never forget for the rest of my life. The supports I got from last year spectators and the volunteers gave me the motivation to run the 2008 full marathon.
I can honestly say this year event was incredible.I can't really find words to describe its characteristics.
I come to enjoy running in the street of Lincoln Nebraska in a very personal way. The course, the organization, the spectators and the weather my Lord were awesome. The volunteers were courteous and very very supportive.
During the course of my run, I tried to grab a Gu from a young lady volunteer who was stationed near the Lincoln High School. Unfortunately I missed the Gu because I did not want to slow down for it. This young lady actually ran as fast as she could after me to hand me the gu. I said to myself "she really cares." What a performance. I could not find a word to thank her, and to let her know how much I appreciated the gesture.
All water stations were excellent. There were more than enough supplies ( water, orange and Gu) to satisfy the thirst of every runner. I would recommend this exceptional event to anyone, whether to a person who has just started running or to an elite runner to consider running the 2009 Lincoln Marathon. This is one of the lifetime event a person must never forget.
If I were to grade the whole event in my book I would give it an A+.

awesome event
This was my 3rd half marathon. Kudos to the organizers for a very well-organized race. I was impressed with the number of cheering fans all along the route; that definitely helped me get to the end. This was the first race where the water and Gatorade cups had lids and straws. WOW! It was so nice to be able to drink and run at the same time, without wearing most of the drink on the front of my shirt. Excellent idea!! Thanks to all of those involved in making this a superb event. I will be back again next year.

I Love the Lincoln1/2 Marathon!
This year was my first time running the Lincoln 1/2 Marathon, and it was my third 1/2 marathon ever. The course is pretty, and it's flat, flat, flat compared to the others I have done. I was really surprised at the number of spectators that were out; they are the best fans, and not just for football! And the aid stations use lids and straws on the cups, so you don't get half your water/Gatorade on your shirt trying to make a spout. I will do this one every year if my schedule allows!

Love the Lincoln Race
I just finished the Lincoln Marathon yesterday and it was awesome. Unlike last year the weather was OUTSTANDING!! I love the straws at the water/Gatorade stations and the free pasta dinner (spoils me for other races).... I did better than last year and intend on doing better NEXT year. Bring on 2009!!

FAST, FAST, FAST
If you want to run fast on a flat course that forces you to run fast, this is your race. I came into the race expecting to run my usual easy run and hit my average time, but within the first 2 miles I realized that would not happen. Long story short, I finished 20 minutes ahead of what I usually run and did not expend that much more energy.
The good:
1. Free pasta dinner.
2. Tech t-shirt.
3. friendly and plentiful volunteers.
4. Gu all over the course.
The bad:
1. The course is horribly boring.
2. No real food at the finish line. All i wanted was a bagel, and I could not find one.
The questionable:
1. Lids on the cups? Not sure what that was about.
Good race, boring, and fast!

WELL ORGANIZED, FUN RUN
Race is well organized. Lots of community support as well as great support from the Guard along the route. This year I set my PR for worst run time, but the race was fun and was able to hobble through to the end; largely due to all the support along the race route. took advantage of the massage therapy at the race end for the first time. They worked out the knot in my left calf that cropped up at mile 16. From the patathon to the race completion, this run is a great run for all athletes and hobby runners alike. Bring the family!

Great race, but getting too crowded
Wonderful race today. Great weather, supportive spectators. But the race filled up to 6000 runners and the bike path portion was very crowded in the first half. Any thought to reversing the course and using the second half for the half marathon and the first half for the marathon, alleviating traffic on that narrow stretch on Hwy 2 Bike Path? Just a thought.

Excellent experience
I have run in a number of marathons and will be returning this year for the second round in Lincoln. I am former military and love the fact that the Guard shows their support. I was also impressed with the fans on the side of the road. They were either cheering or handing out water, and overall it was a great morale-builder. I look forward to the running again this year, and for years to come.

Great Race
Lincoln is a great race - well organized, with a great post-race meal and nice awards. The National Guard brings a lot to this race. This race nearly has the highest percentage of finishers under 3 hours in the U.S. The prize money is reasonable for most. Tim Dooling, the current Lincoln record-holder, can race Ryan Hall if he wants the big bucks.

I don't hold any course records, but I know a fun race and a topnotch event when I see one. I've completed many 1/2 marathons at this event, and 1 full marathon (I'll adding another Lincoln Marathon in 2008). The race directors put on a first-class event, with plenty of support and enthusiastic volunteers. I've spoken with plenty of National Guardsmen and women who praise this marathon, and you will too.

Lincoln Marathon course record-holder says:
I have the current course record 2:20:09. I have a couple of complaints about the Lincoln Marathon. Whatever happened to just showing up on the day of the race when you happened to be peaking at the time? Maybe Dirk Chatlain of the Omaha World Herald should have thought about that as a reason that times in the marathons for Americans - not just nationally but locally as well - are so slow. The Lincoln Marathon doesn't allow race day entries. Do you know how inconvenient that is for an impulsive, healthy, young male distance runner? Spontaneity is what it's all about when you're young. Sorry. Another complaint is the lack of prize money for the marathon, and the sport in general.
I also believe the Lincoln Marathon should not be the host site for the national gaurd, and should just be called the "Lincoln Marathon." I mean if you don't have any local runners, don't try to put gimmicks there to draw numbers. It makes it obvious that the priorities of the race officials aren't right.
Other than that, the race is good. But you have no quality runners, as of lately.

High-Energy, Small Marathon
I am a native Licolnite, although I now live in the east. I have run the Lincoln Marathon 3 times and it is a great little marathon. Unlike Omaha where there are long stretches of nothingness with no fans, here there are fans at every turn. Only one small hill at mile 20. Where I run now has little wind, so the wind on Capital Parkway for miles 22-26 can be tough.

Well organized race and well fed runners
I came from Chicago to run the 2007 marathon due to good reviews by runners from previous years. The good reviews were correct. Even though the weather was rainy, the race organizers', spectators' and runners' enthusiasm was not diminished. The registration fee was a bargain and included the night-before pasta dinner, post-race meal, a techical T-shirt and a cotton finisher T-shirt. The aid stations were plentiful and I loved the cups with lids and straws. If you're 50+, be sure to go to the Sat. luncheon where you will meet some very sociable people. The course was fairly scenic and flat. I plan on coming back in 2008.

A stormy and windy day
It was a thrill to complete the full Lincoln Marathon for the 13th year in a row. I was excited about receiving my Lucky Thirteen Club award. The jacket was nice. I had family with me for the award reception, but the long wait, and additional discovery of a lack of communications between awards staffers concerning the jackets and presenters was disheartening. After waiting a long time, and having staffers dig through a box for my jacket, I had to leave, and missed the Lucky Thirteen Group photo op. at the end. I may not be back next year.

Excellent organization and value
I ran the half marathon. The organization of all aspects of the event was excellent and the overall value was exceptional. For a very reasonable race entry fee, one also received entry into the pasta dinner and post-race party (both included the runner, family and friends), and a high-quality technical shirt, plus a finisher's shirt. The course was well marked and there were frequent fluid stations. I have run over 700 races and this was the first one were the fluid cups had lids and straws. This was a nuisance and created more clutter on the road. An open cup is much better.
Some of the many good points include: plenty of free and convenient parking; friendliness of all of the volunteers; availability of indoor facilities before and after the race; easy recovery of checked gear; and plenty of toilet facilities. The weather (50s and rain) was perfect for me (especially with a tailwind for the second half of the HM). I anticipated crowded conditions at the bike path but it was not a problem when I went through that area. I really enjoyed the entire program.

Very Well Organized
I would like to thank everyone involved with the Lincoln Marathon. I would especially like to thank the Lincoln Police Dept. for a fine job of traffic control. My only change for the marathon is to start the full marathoners at 7:00 and the half marathoners at 7:30. This would alleviate any congestion on the course. Thanks again for a great run!

This course is a breeze
The course is great, overall very flat. I live in Omaha and drove to Lincoln to run this and it was a breeze (considering how hilly Omaha is). Now, I have nothing really to compare it with, since this was my first race of any sort. I will probably do it again next year.
My only complaint is there a 2-mile strip where it is only sidewalk width, so it makes it very hard to go past other racers. Overall, it was a very good first experience.

Most Elements Were Positive
I liked most elements of the marathon; but there were a few I did not like. I know that the staff worked very hard along with the volunteers to make the marathon successful. I agree with others that the expo was so crowded that I could hardly wait to get out of the area. The pasta dinner was fair. The organization of the marathon was excellent. Of 48 marathons I have run, I would rate only New York City and Boston as better as far as spectators. It is amazing how few spectators that there are at most marathons that I have run. The volunteers, policemen and guardsmen made the run more pleasurable. As someone mentioned, the straws for the cups of sports drink were great along the way. The post-race luncheon was delicious. I did not understand if the names of the age group runners were to be announced. When I asked, I was ignored. Then I observed that people were lining up at a table to receive their awards individually. If this was all of the recognition of the age group winners, I think that part could be improved. We worked really hard to be in the top three in our age group.
If one needs a Nebraska marathon for the 50 states, I would recommend Lincoln. However, I would not suggest making a special trip to Lincoln just to run the marathon for fun.

Great experience
Having gone to school in Lincoln, I wanted to run this marathon and I am glad that I did. Other than concerns about the weather (just prior to the race there was lightning in the area), we lucked out and the storm moved through with only a slight rain for the beginning of the race. The positives included the organization, the free meal on Saturday night, easy parking and access to the start/finish line, pretty decent crowd support (even with the lousy weather, 2 nice shirts, flat course, and the cups with lids and straws. There are probably more, but these are the most significant. The only concern is that with the number of half and full runners (a little over 5000), the bike path between miles 6 and 8 can get a little crowded. If they do not limit the number of runners this could become a negative. However, this year it did not hinder my performance at all. In addition, the early entry fee was only $50. I would recommend this as a nice spring marathon. I don't know what the hotels were like, as I stayed with family in the area. I will probably do this one again.

Average Marathon
Although this was my first Marathon...there were a few items this race could improve on. One is, the Gatorade was horrible, like it was mixed really badly. Although I ordered an extra large shirt, they didn't have any more. This is bad planning on their part. One runner in front of us, almost got hit by a vehicle rushing out in front. That was uncalled for.
Other than that, the hospitality was great, medical staff were awesome and although the massage was a joke, it was free!

Well organized
This was my 35th marathon and my first Lincoln Marathon. I was impressed with the overall race organization. From packet pick-up to the victory party - good job.
The hills were not too bad (coming from a flatlander), the rain made for a soggy start but at least the sun didn't make an appearance and create an otherwise miserably humid day. Having the coliseum open before the start was a nice escape from the rain. Not many fans along the course but with the rain, who could blame them?
The finisher shirts were a nice bonus and the medals are nice. The food at the finish could be improved (yogurt, pretzels, bananas and apples) but the food at the victory party more than made up for it. Highly recommend this marathon for anyone doing the 50 states and otherwise.

Race continues to be well organized. Great support from the public, except I'm sure the weather affected turnout this year.
Crowding on the bike trail is still a problem, but I'd hate to see the route move. I suggest full marathoners start at 7:00 and half-marathoners start at 8:00. This would help the congestion quite a bit.
Thanks for a great race! Wish you could control the weather....

First marathon - FABULOUS experience
This was my first marathon ever. I thoroughly enjoyed every second of it! The water stations with lids and straws were wonderful. The shirts and medals were great and very appreciated. A little more spectator support on the second half of the course would be appreciated. Also, food or snacks at the end of the full marathon were not very visible.
Definitely a wonderful experience. I WILL be back next year.

nice race - bad weather!
This was my first small marathon. I really missed having a pace group or at least a clock at every mile. There were no bananas only oranges after the race. The finisher's shirts were picked over by the half marathoners, so I was stuck with a large. I wish the awards were earlier - I had a long drive ahead and could not wait another 2 hours for the ceremony. I did like the flat course and probably would have had a better experience if not for the weather.

My First Marathon
This was my first marathon and I had a great experience! I loved the straws in the drinks and the orange slices. I agree with the previous poster about the gels at the expo - someone with a good selection would make a killing there. I will be back next year trying to improve my time!

Great race for the wheelchairs
I was number 4447 and I liked the race a lot. This was my first year doing the race. I am in a wheelchair. I had fun, plus meeting new people was very nice.

Great first half-marathon for me
I live here and really enjoyed it. They need to do something about the bottleneck on the bike path at 48th and Highway 2 - on a dry day, it is probably OK, but in the rain, it stunk. It was impossible to pass in the grass without ending up with a leg full of mud. Organization is awesome; however, because of the bottleneck, they should consider creating an even narrower start area and make sure slower runners, beginners and walkers are at the back. I had a lot of trouble getting around slower runners on the widest part of the course - and became even worse farther along. I will definitely run it again though.

MY FIRST HALF-MARATHON - IT WAS GREAT!
I really appreciated the spectator support - it made the run very wonderful! The whole experience was wonderful from beginning to end. I highly recommend this race for any first-timer - it made me want to run again!!!

Well organized race
I think this is a great choice of marathons for anyone considering running one or looking for nice spring marathon in the midwest. Some things that stand out for me are: the low registration fee, the pasta dinner (this is INCLUDED in our registration and friends and family may attend at no additional cost), the nice technical running shirt and another t-shirt for finishing, GREAT volunteers, cups with lids and straws at the aid stations, orange slices, flat course, great parking at the start, showers and massages at the finish and several options for lodging. I really only saw two areas that could use improvement. The expo didn't have much to offer and it was crammed into too small of a space. It made me want to get out of there as quickly as possible. I was hoping to buy some Bodyglide and GU there, but the only Bodyglide were these teeny tiny samples that were probably given to the local running store for promotional purposes for them to give away to customers that they in turn sold for $1 each! Rip off! There was a very limited selection of gel flavors and brands. I think a vendor who came well-stocked to this event could do very well. The other thing is that this event is made up of predominately half marathoners. At points during the first half it can be a bit crowded and frustrating. As a result, I felt like I did a lot of weaving in and out of runners the first half of the course. Other than those two things, this is a fabulous marathon and I would highly recommend it to everyone.

My Hometown Race
For most folks this is a race where you can PR. I say that because parking, getting to the start line, and all the packet pickup issues are very easy to take care of here. No wasted energy before the race starts.
The course has only a couple of inclines that are spaced out and the rest is honestly flat. Just enough hills to give you muscles some variety. There are no killer hills.
There is also enough on course support. I would like a few more aid stations, but it was adequate. Bring your own gels, all they pass out is orange slices.
The volunteers and race folks are great and plentiful. There are not very many fans out, but the ones that are out are wonderful. It was also horrible weather this year so it probably kept most inside.
For $50.00 this marathon is a great deal. There are also a lot of fast folks at this race, so those chasing a PR or BQ should have plenty of company.

A Great Midwest Marathon
Lincoln really got it right. The race was very well organized from check-in through post-race. God bless the National Guard, police, race volunteers, and most of all the fans who stood in the rain and howling winds (welcome to May in the midwest) to cheer us on. Parking, bathrooms, water stations, multiple Elvis's, finisher's medal, post-race food, free massages, and all of the friendly people made this a great race. Good job Lincoln! Highly recommend this race to anyone whether it be your first of fiftieth.

very impressed
This was my 5th marathon. It was not necessarily scenic. There were no bands along the route. The expo was small and crowded. The weather was unprfedictable seeing that there was thunder/lightening and heavy rain the night before. This race however was well-run and great. The things that really matter were there. The aid stations were stocked, numerous, well-manned, and ready. The mile markers were easily found and most had someone reading split times. The community of Lincoln seemed engaged and involved. The race directors handled the challenges of weather and non-functioning PA systems fine. The support after the race was strong and encouraging. (Friendly people, free massages, and snacks, although no bananas). After failing to qualify for Boston on two other occasions, I had high hopes in Lincoln. The course is conducive to posting fast times and I was able to hoof it out this time. I think if not for the strong headwinds most had to suffer through, especially miles 16 through 20, the times might have been faster.
As far as crowd support, I am sure the somewhat rainy, foul weather prevented us from seeing the full on community support. Personally, crowd support isn't that important to me until the last couple hundreds yards. I usually zone out during the race.
Way to go Lincoln!

First Half Marathon a great experience!
This was my first half marathon and it was a great experience. (Other than the really wet start). The people of Lincoln really went all out to make 13.1 miles not feel like 13.1 miles. There was never a spot where someone wasn't out to cheer us on. The folks on 20th street were tops!! The bottle of water was more than welcome at the 9 mile mark. You folks on Sheridan know how to come out in mass! Thanks everyone!

Nice Race
Due to injury, I had to cut my marathon short by just finishing the half-marathon. I can say I would recommend this marathon to everyone. It is well organized in a nice setting on the UNL campus. Since I only did the half, my one complaint would be the amount of time spent on the bike trail. It was a terrible weather day so put an asterisk by my comments about fans. Lincolnites and the Lincoln Track Club are very enthusiastic about this race. Course was very fair otherwise and hopefully I will be back in 2008 to run the full course.

A very well-organized marathon
I thought the organization for this marathon was excellent. The start/finish area was large and without a lot of congestion. The course was very well marked, traffic was managed well, and the aid stations were plentiful and stocked very well. A nice touch was the lids and straws on the water and gatorade, although most of the time I just ripped them off and threw the liquid into my mouth. The course is mostly flat with hills of only a shallow grade. The last six miles or so are flat or slightly downhill- I can't thank the folks who designed this course enough for that. The weather was windy and wet - my feet were soaked within the first mile. The wind was kind of nasty when running against it. The post-race showers are ice cold- just a little warm water would be nice. And, don't forget to bring a towel!
I would definitely recommend this race for your Nebraska marathon.

Lincoln Track Club does a great job
Yes, the 2007 race was rainy! The LTC did a nice job preparing, although I was under the impression there would be pace teams (am I mistaken)?! The pasta party the night before was a wonderful extra for me and my family. I do have two suggestions for improvement: 1) Better/louder/more visable splits at each mile marker. I heard maybe one split of the 12 on the course and that was because I asked for a repeat of the time. 2) not allowing runners that have already finished and/or spectators crowd the last half mile (southwest of the Coliseum); there were lots of folks not obeying the barriers in place and it was harder to finish with people running across the street/sidewalk as you are looking at the long-awaited finish line.

Very well organized race!
My eleventh marathon and first Lincoln Marathon but as Arnold says 'I'll be back'! This was the best organized race that I have run in. Great pre-race pasta party for the whole family, two shirts, very nice medal, free massage, post race food all for an economical price! Course is very flat - I can't remember anything that resembled a hill of any significant size. Straws and lids for the water/gatoraide was fantastic! Good thing they are limited the number of runners - it was a little crowded for the first eight miles. I must be the only fool that lines up at the correct pace location. They had plenty of volunteers to make sure everything went smoothly. I never comment about the weather - the man upstairs is in change of that and I try not to be critical of him. Considering the size of Lincoln, they had great crowd support. Lincoln/Nebraska should be proud of this event!

Great race. Absolutely the best in the area.
Great race, inspiring fans, flat course.
Got a technical shirt for entering, and a nice warm 'finishers' cotton t-shirt to put on at the end (we were all soaked, so the shirts helped). This was a great touch over previous years.
The only thing I think they could improve on is moving the bike path portion up to Highway 2. The bottleneck when crossing the 10K pad was a little frustrating, and there's plenty of room for both traffic and runners on the HWY if they coned off one lane.
Also, it'd be nice if the organizers were more adament about the slower runners moving further back at the start. Why were there walkers standing 15-20 seconds from the starting line? I think they were just beginners who didn't know any better, but it was maddening at times for the first couple miles. Better signage and/or direction would probably help this problem.
Still... I look forward to running this race again next year. It gets better every year I run it.
I definitely suggest this run to anybody... beginner or veteran.

Excellent race for a PR
The race is one of the best marathon events here in the Midwest, and I highly recommend it for someone who is trying to run a PR. The frequent declines give your heart an excellent chance to recover and help push your pace. The spectators were great the first half, but there was hardly anyone on the course on the second half. Overall, I really like the event and plan to do many more Lincoln Marathons!

Well Done!!!!
Lincoln needs to be commended for putting on a great marathon! Of the 46 I have run, seldom have I been treated to a free pasta and post race meal as was put on at this race. The weather cannot be helped, obviously, nor the flooded roads. The straws were a nice touch as well and the fan support on a lousey weather day was strong. A finishers shirt is always a bonus! After Atlanta it was nice to once again have gatorade throughout the course. The hills were nothing to speak of with the exception of the one by the turnaround, even that was do-able. The only negative I have is the last 200 meters of the race on that brick, potholed, section of the course. I was pleased and would recommend this to others looking for a great marathon. Well Done.

First half marathon!
It was mine and my wife's first half marathon today. We chose Lincoln because we live here and heard it was a very nice race. The organization seemed great, and there was a ton of free stuff... the pasta dinner was nice, and the post-race lunch at the Champions Club was nice. The t-shirts were good. I like that the actual shirt you got for registering was a technical shirt, not a cotton t-shirt. The finisher shirt and medal were very nice. We were soaked from the rain, so a nice, dry cotton shirt was fabulous. We'll definitely be doing this run again.

Boston qualifying course
It's a nice, mostly flat course to set up a time to qualify for Boston. The scenery is nice, the organization is good, and the crowd is small but very cheerful. Pretty good for a small city and still better than the Omaha Marathon.

Best marathon I've run
Flat course, interesting scenery, friendly and energetic fans, but the highlight was the food. The modest entry fee included the pre-race pasta dinner for runners and their families, and a post-run porkloin sandwich luncheon for runners and their families! Great value, great food, fun time.

Nice, Small Marathon
Really enjoyed the pasta-fest and the post-race meal! Nice flat course and a friendly city. Two places for improvement: organizers should think about the race from the perspective of an out-of-towner. Also, open registration earlier.
Thanks!

Lots of great things to say!
This being my fourth marathon, I'm starting to understand what makes a marathon race runner-friendly. You want easy access to the expo for pre-race logistics; a quality pre-race meal to help mingle with other competitors; easy access to the starting line, ample parking and pre-race bathrooms; fantastic weather; level course terrain with manageable hills; an abundance of crowd support in local neighborhoods and plenty of police protection at intersections; sufficient drink stations stocked with water and Gatorade (they had STRAWS in cups! Brilliant!); a finish line environment that you're excited to cross; results that are timely and accurate; enough post-race activities to help ease the oncoming leg soreness; and a quality medal you'll be proud to wear around your neck. I can say the Lincoln Marathon and its organizers met and exceeded all these criteria superbly.
Areas where improvement could be made:
1. If the possibility of moving the finish line inside Memorial Stadium exists, it would make the race's end all the more dramatic and fulfilling.
2. As I was looking for post-race food near the finish line, all I could find was a box of bananas. Surely there had to be more, or did all the half runners gorge? Please save some food for us non-sub-3-hour people.
3. A band at the mile 17/23 mark would be great for motivation.
4. Cotton race T-shirts are great for washing cars. I'd pay a little extra for a better shirt.
Overall, this is a fabulous race with fewer than 1,000 finishers. Be prepared for how fast people run here - National Guard teams send their rabbits here to qualify for the national team, so there will be high percentage of Boston qualifiers to run with. Thank you Nebraska for a fabulous race!

Very nice smaller marathon
I ran Lincoln barefoot and would rate the course highly as to barefoot friendliness. The only bad spot was a section of the bike path that was very bad chip seal but fortunately there was good grass alongside onto which one could run.
Organization in this race is top notch. The water stations were plentiful and the water cups even had lids with straws in them. Very nice!!
The course is incredibly flat with a good portion of it an out and back.
I had a great time and would consider returning for a PR.

Way to go Lincoln
This was my first Lincoln marathon and I was truly impressed from the organization, to the course and the fans everything was wonderful. All of the water stations were well stocked with drinks and support. The course was fair and challenging. I ran a PR. The roses at the finish were a very nice touch. If you want a well organized marathon in terrific city then Lincoln is for you. I will be back next year.

Mostly good
Great course - relatively flat. Great weather. Friendly people running it. I actually really liked the second half being out and back. It was a good change of pace to see runners coming toward you. Good aid stations (although a little far apart on the first half). Downtown close to start/finish so you can walk from your hotel. Plenty of post-race massage tables available. Only real negatives: 1) No food - only water - at the finish line (apparently food was on the other side of the stadium quite a ways away in the opposite direction from downtown). 2) The finish definitely needs to be on the football field like other marathons (Detroit, South Bend, Memphis, etc.)and not outside the stadium. Definitely recommend it if you're looking for a smaller marathon.

Lincoln Puts Together a Great Marathon
My 9th marathon, in my hometown, and I (finally) qualified for Boston. Everything came together in Lincoln. Starting with Beardsley talking at the expo - inspiring, an awesome marathon (free) poster, perfect weather, and a course that was lined with hometown spectators, varied with beautiful neighborhoods, parks, and flat stretches as well as gentle rolling hills. The water and Gatorade with STRAWS and TOPS were brilliant and I wish all races provided them. The only downside was that they did not provide energy gel (luckily I brought my own) and there is not a topography map available. I suggest that you drive the course the day before to get a feel for where the hills are.

A Great Overall Experience from a Flat-lander!
I ran Lincoln to check off State #25 and was truly impressed. Having 29 years of experience pays off... organization and volunteers were wonderful. Neighborhood residents were out in full force. Everyone was enthusiastic and supportive. Water stations were well manned and stocked. Post-race food was real food, and a real treat in a real dining room!
Coming from Florida, found easy hills challenging but doable. Thanks for a great race!

A really well run half-marathon
This was my second half-marathon. My first was in Omaha in 2004. I blew that time away. New PR. A lot of the reason has to do with the great course. It's nice and flat with only a few small hills thrown in for some variety. :)
My only negative would have to be the portions on the course that were on the bike trails. This race had way too many people to try to squeeze onto a 6 foot-wide bike trail. It got pretty crazy getting past the slower folks during those parts of the course. Otherwise, a fantastic race!

The Rose for Finishers is a Nice Touch, but....
...I would have preferred a banana or some broth. I was a late sign up and am glad I came. The free pasta-thon, lunch/celebration, and massage were great. The start/finish were also handled very well. However, the course was a bit rough in that: a) there was too much concrete, b) the back half loop had very little crowd support, and c) I was forced to see the leaders cruise by me as they effortlessly passed Mile 23 while I was 8 miles behind them. Talk about demoralizing for us poor plodders! The expo is also kind of non-existent. The event is really geared toward the 1/2 crowd and they do a very good job at it. Not sure I'll be back, but as a new resident of the Cornhusker State I think it's the best there is. I'm certainly open to other opinions, but in the meantime I sure am going to miss Twin Cities.

Well-organized event
This was my first marathon, and overall a good experience. Here's the good and the bad:
Pros:
- relatively flat course
- aid stations with cups that have lids and straws! (other race organizers take note)
- free post-race massages
- nice, early spring weather
- enthusiastic volunteers (THANKS!)
Cons:
- not a terribly scenic course
- not a great deal of crowd support (although the people that were watching were very enthusiastic)

Perfect day for a Marathon
We got nearly perfect weather (40's at start, upper 50's at finish) for this flat and fast course. The only problem with the course, in my opinion, is at the turn-around at mile 20 where I wish they would run it around the lake; instead it goes up a side road and then back. The volunteers were great and well organized and enthusiastic. Thanks, Lincoln, for a great experience.

Very impressed - happy I chose it!
I just finished the Lincoln Marathon this morning. It was a GREAT race - I PRed and qualified for Boston with several minutes to spare. Nice flat course, beautiful scenery, well-organized. The volunteers and water stops were perfect - I had everything I needed and I loved the ideas of straws. The pasta-thon the night before was a nice way to meet people and I loved that they included the entire family - same goes for the post-race lunch/awards ceremony. I was from over three hours away and I was amazed at how many "welcome to Nebraska" and "we're happy to have you" comments I received. Longest post-race massage I have ever received (probably 15-20 minutes), easy start, nice medal, original shirt, fast results, very welcoming campus.
Only 2 problems - I had some difficulty spotting the mile markers during the first ten miles - I think I maybe only saw 3-4 of the first ten. Also, I wouldn't recommend the Motel 6 given on the website - I'm not a hotel snob, but it was pretty low-end, though the cheap price was nice.
Overall, I highly recommend it and rank it a 9+ out of 10!

Lincoln tops Omaha
The course is pretty flat so if you're going for the Boston qualifying time that one might be a good one for you. The organization is well done for a small city. The crowd cheers and makes noise. The weather was surprisingly cold and windy this year (around 32 at the start). But it's still better than Omaha.
I'll run it again next year.

Fantastic Fantastic Fantastic!
I just completed the Lincoln Marathon for the eleventh year in a row, enroute to the Lucky Thirteen Club, and am still partial to the course, crowds, and extras. The yearly free pastathon is always awesome! This year's, (5/1/05), cold, (34+ at the start), windy, (20 mph gusts), weather was a treat, and it kept me cool and stimulated to run hard all the way.
As always, miles 2 to 3 and 8 to 9 had the hills. Those 'Cornhuskers' know how to provide a great marathon experience. Great, let's do it again next year.

Awesome well-managed race
I loved this race. From the pasta feed (included in the entry fee) to having access to a warm building before/after the race to the plentiful aid stations w/ straws in the drinks, everything was organized topnotch.
The community really gets behind the race; lots more spectators than I would have imagined for a race like this. Especially given how cold and windy it was.
The sights don't compare to some big city or rural destination marathons, but you DO see the neat parts of Lincoln like the university campus and the capitol.
Lots of other comments about this race being 'small'... actually, I thought that there were a lot of people in it. Fast people.
The first 13 miles are a loop back to the start/finish. The half marathoners finish and the full marathoners do another 13 out-and-back (very similar to the Mardi Gras Marathon, if you are familiar with that). If you don't mind being 'teased' by the finish at the halfway point, this is an okay course because you get the best (and the worst) of having both a loop and an out-and-back.
Other comments have described the course as 'basically flat'... I actually thought it was pretty rolling. The 'hills' aren't steep... they are long, gentle up and down grades. So come to this race expecting neither pancake flat nor steep hills.
It was very windy this year and colder than normal. The cold was unexpected. But you SHOULD expect wind. This is Nebraska. Too bad that this year's wind was in our faces for the last five miles. Blah.
Everyone involved in the event was super-nice. Parking was a breeze.
I would do this event every year if it wasn't on the same weekend as several other great races. But I will try to return some year.

It was fast. I had a blast!
This may not be Boston, but I was impressed with the event, and it will whet your appetite for more. My only previous marathon had 156 competitors, so this was a step up. As everybody has said, the straws were ingenious. (Duh-uh!) Many more fans than I expected. I would, however, suggest that the Lincoln Marathon be the only running event that day. The half-marathon has three times the number of entrants, and I think it detracts from what should be the main event. Even the Lincoln Track Club listed the half-marathon story before the marathon in their headlines list. Move the half-marathon to the fall and I'd run both.
The food at the post-race celebration at Champions Club was very good and plentiful. A lot seemed to be left over, so I wonder if runners chose not to wait until 1 pm. The post-race massage was most welcome. Just amazed at the number of volunteers this event had. Bravo! For those running this for the first time and who live nearby, I highly recommend running the course over a three-day period. I did 14-8-4 the Fri/Sun/Mon before the race, so there were no surprises and it gave me a lot of confidence. I also shaved 8 1/2 minutes off my only other marathon time, and qualified for Boston. I just started running at 44, with no athletic background whatsoever, and my first race was last October at age 46. If an old coot like me can do it, so can you!

Great Midwest Race
What a first-class race! I have run some big-time races (Twin Cities, Boston) and this has the organization of those, but without the price tag and crowd.
The crowd support was great considering it was such a chilly, windy morning.
I was so thankful for the splits being called at EVERY mile marker - I had a watch malfunction (operator error) so my watch was about 6.5 minutes behind. Thank goodness these volunteers kept me on pace.
The only complaint I have is the bathroom situation. There were no porta-potties outside at the start - all interior bathrooms in the coliseum (nice for the weather, but bad for congestion). It was nice that the race director sent out an email afterwards apologizing for Memorial Stadium not being open, so it sounds like he thought it was taken care of. That didn't help me at the time, though.
One suggestion - if it's possible. A finish on the field inside the stadium would be amazing! Us college football fans would get a kick out of running on the hallowed turf. Of course, that may be why it's hallowed - us knuckleheads aren't running on it. Anyway, it would be pretty cool if that could happen.
Overall, this is an awesome race, and well worth every penny and training effort.

Great event and fun course
I ran the half and enjoyed the cool weather and flat course. A little bit of congestion especially when the course necked down to a bike trail. After that, wide open and no problems. The spectators were great and Lincoln is a beautiful city. Race organization is good with numerous water stops. The downtown area offers a lot of pre- and post- race activities with numerous restaurants and clubs. This is also the National Guard Marathon.

Nice small event
If you are looking for a nice marathon to run, give Lincoln serious consideration.
This is a no-frills event. The expo, t-shirt and post-race food are unspectacular, but the things they do right are the things that really matter to runners.
The course was relatively flat, giving you enough variety to work all your muscles. At each mile marker, you had someone calling out the time. The water/Gatorade stops were plentiful and you had the option of cups with straws. This was really nice and I'm surprised it hasn't caught on at more marathons. Everyone loved the straw idea.
The wind made things difficult as the marathon concluded but I guess you can't control Mother Nature. Thank you Lincoln for a nice, small event.

Very well organized with lots of fan support.
The course was mostly flat with a few small hills. Only problem was the headwind from miles 21 through to the finish. Of course the race directors can do nothing about the weather, but they did run an excellent race. Plenty of pasta at the dinner, and lots of water, Gatorade, oranges, and vaseline at water stops. The local residents came out of their homes and provided music and support for all runners. A very well run marathon, and I PR'd to. What a great experience.

One of the best organized marathons anywhere
I have run the Lincoln Marathon 27 times and have yet to find any flaws with the organization. The Nebraska weather can be a challenge, but that is why we run. I would highly recommend this race. With it being the National Guard qualifier for the Marine Corp Marathon, it is run by a large number of serviceman who only add to the quality of the race.

Great race organization!
This was my first marathon and it was spectacular! The volunteers were wonderful. I am a slower runner and finished in 5:11:19. But there was plenty of water and Gatorade when I reached the tables. The police blocked the streets for us and everyone was extremely pleasant. The only bad side to the race was the weather. It was very cold and windy, but that is no fault of the race coordinators. I would highly recommend the Lincoln Marathon to everyone! The only change I would have made is the name announcement at the end. The race isn't supposed to close until the 6-hour mark, but anyone that came in after 5 did not get their name announced. I was a little disappointed in that, after running such a distance. But overall, nice job!

Good Barebones Race
This was my 4th marathon, and first Lincoln Marathon. The marathon is well organized without a lot of the frills like bands, fancy water stops or post-race amentities. The course is well marked with timers at every mile marker yelling out times. And the cups with the lids and straws are a great idea that I can't figure out why more races don't have. For the traditionalist, they also had cups without lids.
The course does run along some highly used roads and at times we were breathing exhaust fumes from the cars that were driving by. There are hills, with one at the 25 mile marker that at that point is kind of nasty. Good crowd support.
The free pasta dinner the night before was good, as it is open to all runners and their guests, which made for a real family atmosphere. Only real negative is that there was only soda pop, water, bananas and oranges for the finishers; you would think someone could scrounge together some bagels, yogurt or cookies.

Great Surprise... Well Done
I really had know idea what to expect but came away from it really enjoying the whole experience. The race set up was extremely convenient with free and close parking to the start/finish, pasta dinner, and packet pick up. The course was a nice mix of residental, parks, and University of Nebraska campus. The course was a little hilly and there is one good one right at mile 25... ouch. The volunteers were extremely helpful and cheerful. The shirts were good and Nebraska red and the finisher's medal was really cool with a portrait of Lincoln on it. The only complaint was that the water stops were every 3 miles for the 1st 12 miles... which were just a little to spread out for my liking. The next 14 miles the water stops were every where and I really liked the water cups having covers and straws which made it easier to drink. Thanks to all the military service people who helped out not only for the marathon but for everyday.

Cheering fans at every step!
I ran the half in Lincoln and the thing that stood out the most to me in this race was the amount of spectators. There were hundreds of fans holding signs, playing music and encouraging everyone. It was incredibly motivating and probably contributed to my personal best finish.
Also, the organization was great and the course is a fast route that is mostly flat and for a few miles goes onto to paved trails which was a nice change.
All in all this race was very enjoyable and I will definitely be signing up again next year.

A Great Surprise...
I really didn't know what to expect coming into the race but without a doubt it was a quality marathon. The race was one of the most convenient races I've gone to... plenty of free and close parking for the packet pick up and start/finish line. The course for the marathon was a stroll through some very nice neighborhoods, the university, and parks. The last couple of miles were an out-and-back section, but because of this there were a lot of fans on that section. There are some rolling hills in this course so do a little hill work and the last hill around 25 felt awful on the legs, but there was no way I was stopping.
The T-shirts were great and in Nebraska red and the medals were very cool and even had a portrait of Lincoln on it. The complaint I did have was that for the 1st 12 miles the water stops were spread out around every 3 miles. After 12 miles they were all over the place but scarce for the 1st half. The workers at the water stops were excellent and cheerful and I loved the fact that the cups had lids and straws on them which made them into little water bottles and much easier to drink on the run. Thanks to all the military service people that helped out - not only on that day for the marathon, but for helping out everyday.

Great Midwest Marathon
Overall the Lincoln Marathon is a well run, first-class event. The course is essentially flat with a few hills of little significance at mile 9 and 19. The first half of the run is more scenic taking runners through beautiful neighborhoods and past the Lincoln Country Club. It is also well protected from the wind, which tends to blow in Lincoln in the spring. The second half of the course is flat but can be windy. It is also less crowded as 75% of the runners run the half marathon and are off the course by then. The first half of the course felt crowded especially a 2-mile stretch on a narrow bike path. Spectators are great, as is the National Guard. Aid stations are fairly sparse, as the first one didn't come until mile 3. They are better in the second half, as the route is essentially out and back. Nice medal, great shirt and the rose at the end was a nice touch. Free pasta feed and free massages. Good value and a great experience for those looking to run a Nebraska marathon.

Great Race!
The course was flat, and it was very well organized with plenty of water stops. In a couple of areas there were also residents along the course handing out water. It was a fun time. There were not a lot of spectators, but the ones out there were vocal. Great course protection from Lincoln's finest. The only thing I would have liked to change was the wind. Too much of it, but what can you do about that? I highly recommend this race. It was a great time.

A great experience!
This was my first half-marathon, and being only thirteen, I wasn't all that sure of myself. All of that was put behind me once I got on the course. All of the spectators were supportive. There wasn't much tough terrain along the way.
The pasta-thon and other food offered were great. Not only that, but there was plenty of water and Allsport at each aid station along the way.
Even if you aren't a runner, it is a great experience no matter how old you are. It's so fun and you'll want to do it again.

Great for a first-timer
This was my first half-marathon, and actually, my first real organized race. Needless to say, I was a bit nervous, but the organization was exceptional and things were fine on race day.
Plenty of NICE bathrooms (not porta-potties) available to use before the race. Well marked course that is relatively flat, drinks every 2 miles, and a nice pasta-thon dinner the night before the race.
I will definitely run this again next year. Great fun.

Excellent Experience - Motivates me - fun people
A great experience. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed meeting fellow runners and volunteers before and after the race. It was great hearing everybody's training and running experiences.
Organization and execution was first-class. The race started on time and in an area (at the Univ. of Nebraska-Lincoln campus) where runners can stretch, go to the restroom, and relax before the big moment.
The route was neat because you go through downtown Lincoln, seeing the Capitol, beautiful residential district, beautiful running trail, and then back to downtown.
Post-race celebration includes food, drink, music, and lots of people to talk to about their experience. My wife and I felt very welcome.
There seemed to be every level of athlete at this race from the ironmen and ironwomen studs to the weekend warriors.

EVERYONE WAS EXTREMELY SUPPORTIVE
Everyone that lined the streets, the friends, families, volunteers and the wonderful Linclon Police Dept. were all very supportive and encouraged us the entire way. I know I could not have done my best without hearing and seeing their applause and needed words of encouragement!!!

All races should be this organized
The race (my daughter and I did the half marathon) was the most organized race I have ever competed in, including the Boulder Bolder. Being my daughter's first road race ever, I was a little apprehensive for her, but she did quite well, and I feel the course had a lot to do with that. It is challenging but not so tough that a 'newbie' can run and enjoy it. We are already making plans for next year and want to do the marathon. Again, kudos for a great job. I only wish I lived closer so I could be a part of the Lincoln Track Club.

Wonderful Event
Thanks to all volunteers and supporters for a great event. The only area I found lacking somewhat is the crowd support. However, Lincoln had FAR more crowd support than Omaha (and race day was much colder and unseasonable than the Omaha race, but there was a good-sized crowd).
I liked the chip timing, and the pre-race expo was well-organized.

Needs Help!!!
The half marathoners should start either before or after the marathoners, not at the same time. There was little support by the community, but the ones that were there were very nice. At the 5-hour mark they started taking the finish line down. The announcer packed up and left, leaving the finishers only minimal applause at the finish. The water stops were very good. Not many after-race recovery snacks available. Plenty of medical help around.

A great event
This was my first marathon, and I am from Lincoln. The weather was perfect and the organization was first-rate. There is a free pasta feed the night before for all runners and their family members. After the run there is a complimentary banquet (which is great) and a massage is available (free) to all who have run the full marathon (GET THE MASSAGE).
The first half of the course is run through some very nice residential areas and there is a great deal of spectator support. The second half is an out-and-back, which is not as scenic as the front, but there is tremendous fan support (even the Governor was there). The race is chip-timed, which is a nice thing for those of us who start near the back, and when you cross the finish line (on the university) you are announced, both by name and where you are from, which is a nice touch and is great if you have family members in attendance.
There is plenty of water, Allsport, vaseline and whatever else you might need on the course. The front runners are escorted and the Lincoln Police do an excellent job of traffic control during the entire race. There are bike escorts patrolling the entire race and time is called at each mile marker.
In sum, it is really a well run and well supported event. The Race Directors have been doing this for 27 years and they really have their act together and it shows.

Enjoyed the whole experience...
I can't believe that only 872 ran the marathon. This was very well done and set up. The pasta party was included in the entry fee. One small problem - I was still running out while others were finishing and was not told to go up the street until I ran past the street and realized that this was wrong. The volunteers were great. After the course support was pulled, there was plenty of help to get us to the finish line. A nice indoor building before and after the race was nice.

Fine Regional Race
The course is an approximately 13-mile loop through mostly residential neighborhoods (shared with the 1/2 marathon racers) followed by an out-and-back down a main street through parks, right-of-ways and the like. The race begins and ends and the university stadium. The course rolled a bit, but was not terribly hilly.
Contrary to some posters, I found the out-and-back to be an advantage (a bit dull in spots, but you could anticipate inclines, and you weren't quite so lonely on the trip back). Residents were out in force. The stadium was opened in the morning and was a warm place to wait. The field was small enough to allow the marathoners to get to pace in the first mile. The National Guard did an excellent job of organizing the event.
Not a lot of chow at the end (bananas!), but not a high priority with me, especially considering the very reasonable entry fee.

What a great experience!!!!
This was my first marathon and I have nothing but positive comments to make. The expo and night before Pasta-thon made for really nice pre-marathon events. These events were held downtown which made it easy to just park the car and walk from place to place (Lincoln has a convenient cluster of downtown movie theaters and restaurants - some of which my husband and I took advantage of over the marathon weekend).
The weather on the day of the marathon was perfect, cool and not overly bright. There were plenty of supporters along the course (some playing inflatable guitars, blasting 'Eye of the Tiger' from stereos, giving high fives, holding signs that read 'You go, girl', etc.) The course offers some beautiful scenery and there is an abundance of water/sports drink/orange slice/port-o-potty stops along the way.
After running the marathon, they offer a light lunch while they do a raffle and the awards ceremony. If you have any reason to come to Nebraska or your goal is to do the 50 States + DC, you really should consider participating in this marathon!!! You'll have a great time.

Best Spring Marathon Around
This is simply an awesome marathon. As long as I am able to run, I will do the Lincoln Marathon every year.
Drinks with lids and straws is great.
Military band playing at the start.
Support from all the volunteers.
Peaceful and relaxing pasta event the night before.
Nice gym to stretch in before the race.
Availablity to use a real toilet before the race.
So many good things to list!

The National Guard give it a great spirit
It was an honor to run with the Guard. It was inspirational having guardsmen and women handing out drinks and encouraging us, especially during war time. We are able to run freely because our military defends our freedom.
The drinks with lids and straws - a definite plus.
Everyone I encountered in the race, along the course and through the organization were friendly.
Very well organized.

Rainy day, but a fun race
The start was delayed 30 or so minutes due to a very bad thunderstorm passing through. My hat's off to the National Guard Band who stood their ground at the start and continued to play while it stormed and all the runners took shelter.
The course was for the most part flat except for the loop portion from miles 18 - 22 which were very hilly (save your strength for this). The pasta dinner the night before was adequate, as was the packet pick-up and expo.
Would definitely run this race again.

Pretty good in spite of heavy rain
This was only my second marathon and I almost didn't do it given the heavy rains... but I was glad I did. It is basically flat, a wonderful change from my first marathon in Omaha. The crowd support was pretty good, in spite of the constant rain. The drinks with lids and straws were great. The oranges were great! I was disappointed to not see anything going on at the finish line. No food, etc. I see from other runners comments that there was a post-race party somewhere, but no sign or person was offering instructions to it. This was a big letdown, but overall a well run event.

Small in Numbers, Big in Heart
Lincoln should be proud of this event... it was a first-class marathon. I was very impressed with the people of Lincoln. The race is smaller in nature (only a thousand or so marathoners), but people still lined some streets, car windows were always down with positive comments coming out, etc. On one residential street, a church group was handing out water bottles. Aid stations had cups with lids (why don't all races do this?).
Course is flat for the most part, and the two halves are distinctly different. Thouroughly enjoyed this as my first marathon. I passed on my hometown Vancouver Marathon (a biggy) and have no regrets whatsoever.
Thank you Lincoln (and the National Guard and other volunteers... your efforts are appreciated!).

GREAT MARATHON !!!
I have a little bit of a different perspective. I am a marathon walker, so I look at the full marathon from the back of the pack. This was my 5th marathon, and in spite of the bad weather, I loved Lincoln. The expo was good, in spite of needing more room, and I had absolutely no problem getting my packet. The pasta dinner was excellent. I liked the course. I can understand why some folks do not like the 2nd 1/2 (out and back), but I lived on Normal Blvd. 25 years ago, so it was fun to go by the old homestead a couple of times and say "hi" to the new owner on the way out. Taking so long to finish, I encountered sun, warmth and humidity during the last 6-7 miles. I want to thank the race directors for hanging in there with me as I attempt the 50 States goal. The finish line people waited for me and I especially want to thank the fine gentleman on his bike who followed me until I had 1/2 mile to go. He is an emergency radio fellow and had to get involved with tracking the severe weather that was coming in that late afternoon. I also want to thank my great friend Jim Ryan who kept me company the last 8 miles.
I would encourage you 50 Staters to have Lincoln be your Nebraska marathon. I do not believe you will be disappointed. For people who are doing a marathon 'cause you do marathons, I am also positive that you, too, will like the Lincoln Marathon

Exceptionally well organized, very good course
• HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Splendid organization overall. Course has two or three elevation changes that constitute actual hills (tho still moderate), with enough other gentle grades up and down to shift muscle groups occasionally. Reasonably attractive for a city course with fairly scenic breaks along paved bike path (miles 6-8) and through Holmes Park (most of miles 19-21)
• EXCEPTIONAL volunteers at well-supplied aid stations—Get this: they take the time and trouble to put lids and <b>straws</b> in cups—and just about every one of them holds the cups out on an outstretched palm. (Not such a big deal for slowpokes like me, but this makes a MAJOR difference for faster runners.) Kudos to volunteer coordinators!
• Significant traffic comes out as the day goes on, but law enforcement manages it very well.
• Good crowd support. Probably light given the rainy morning in 2003, but the fact that as many came out as did under the circumstances indicates strong local support.
• Lincoln does the food <b>right</b>. Generous and ample free pasta feed before, delicious bbq'd pork steak sandwiches afterward. Ohhhh, BABY.

Great Fans, Great Organization, O.K. Course
I ran the Lincoln AllSport Marathon yesterday (5/4/03) and I wanted to give some general feedback on the race for runner consideration.
The volunteers were outstanding. It was raining buckets and there was never a problem with getting fluids or fruit. Very, very good job.
The course was a little boring. The marathon runners ran the first half with the half-marathoners and then passed near the end in the middle of the race. The second half was an out and back that was mentally draining and was mostly along a road shared with cars. I would have liked to see more of Lincoln and not so much traffic. Also it is tough to see the finish line 1/2 way through a race.
The expo was poorly organized. The expo was held in a small conference room in the Embassy Suites hotel. I had to nudge my way into the room and all I wanted to do was get away from all those people standing on top of me. There were some genuine deals from the Lincoln Running Company and other vendors, but the participants did not have enough room to manuever the room.
The race graphics are awesome. Without a doubt this is my favorite race medal, which is a cast of a Lincoln Penny. I also love the poster which is Abraham Lincoln inspired and cleverly written.
Race organization was very good. I love the finish on the Nebraska campus and with the addition of having showers at the finish line. The organizers handled torrential rain very well.
The website could use a little more development. There should be a clearer link for results from the main site header. Also, you could sell all that old merchandise to us runners over the web.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this race, commend the race organizers for a job well done, and pray it doesn't rain again next year.

Good Event
Pros - Fairly flat course, suprisingly scenic, mile markers easily seen, times called out at each miler marker, water and sports drinks at aid stations were given w/ straws, nice medal, and plenty of great and enthusiastic spectators (amazed at how many there were considering the weather was rainy and cold).
Cons - Weather was rainy & cold (not the organizers' faults but the race had to start 15 minutes late due to lightning concerns), small expo, not enough port-a-potties at the start, and the worst post-race party (only water, sports drinks, and one table serving bananas & apples).

Not as walker friendly as it used to be
I've walked the full marathon 3 times and the half once. The first loop is great. The second is a little dull and you do it twice. And the specatators have gone home. Two years ago the city took away their early start for walkers and slow runners. THIS IS NOT THE ORGANIZERS FAULT. Last year I did the half and that is a much better experience for walkers, though I think they shut down aid stations too soon. The strengths are the expo, the pastathon and victory party, nice people, friendly cooperative police, and the beautiful first loop. I'm doing the half again this year.

Great Race for the most part
This is the third time that I have run this race and it was very good, again. I have a couple of suggestions for next year's race. First, the aid stations were nicely spaced out over the course, however, the sports drink, all sport was watered down way too much over the last 1/2 of the course and there was no ice in the cups. Drinking warm watered down sports drink made my stomach and most of my friends' stomachs feel heavy and unpleasant. Just add ice to the cups and don't water them down as much next year. Also, the t-shirts were way down in looks from year's past. The 20th anniv. t-shirt was very nice looking and this being the 25th, i expected more, and instead got a very, very plain one-sided t-shirt. Go back to the past year's designer. Also, the first half of the race is nice, then the dreaded loop where I see the same course again plus the fact that it is in the open with no trees and the heat takes a lot out of you. The last half of the course needs to be changed.

Great Event
Thanks to Gary and Nancy. The Lincoln lived up to expectations again this year, the 25th. Great time of year. Good support and more porta potties this year, good. Lincoln finishers get a finishing 'prize'. This year's being the 25th anniversary I had expected more than a key fob with no mention of the 25th. I do like the long sleeve shirt. The Pre-race free Pasta Thon the night before really sets this race apart. I recommend that you try the Lincoln, plan to have a good race and fun weekend.

A fabulous marathon!
The Lincoln Marathon is wonderful. The course is two fun loops that run through residential areas. It only has about two slight hills. The organization is incredible. The police were helpful and the fans were great.
One of the things I appreciated the most was that every aid station had a sports drink and many of the aid stations had ice, which I used to cool myself off with.

Great First Marathon!
I thought this was a great marathon! The first half of the course is through residential areas, with a lot of people out. The last half of the course is an out and back which was cool, because other runners (coming back towards me, I was a little slow) were giving encouragement. The whole group of runners had such a nice feeling-a good midwestern crowd! The course was largely flat, and the aid stations were awesome. I was, again, really slow and was worried they were going to close out on me, but they were there as long as I was. The Penguin even announced my name when I crossed the finish line. A great event!

Excellent organization and behind the scenes work!
As a first time marathon runner, I was pretty impressed with how well the organization was and how well the event was pulled off. The only thing I didn't like was the course. The first 13, is a loop through a residential area and was great...lots of support and variety. The last half was an out-and-back course, and it got pretty boring running the same place twice; plus, it was in the wide open and got pretty hot. The police did a great job with traffic, and everything else was great!

Wonderful
This is a wonderful event that is enjoyable for the whole family. The weekend starts off with a kids' race the day before the marathon, followed by a free pasta dinner. Everyone is welcome and the support and friendly atmosphere are truly one of a kind. My ONLY problem was that towards the end as the runners started to thin out, the support seemed to thin out as well. The finish line banner was taken down well before the last runner came in, and the group of people standing at the finish line helping struggling runners to water or medical personnel also left. It kind of gave the impression that if you couldn't run the marathon in under 5 hours, you weren't important enough to finish under a banner or with the help of the support people. Other than that, it was a wonderful race. Hopefully the RD's will take notice and have people at the finish line until the LAST runner finishes!!

The Lincoln Marathon is a well-run event.
I have run the Lincoln Marathon three times now, and each time becomes more enjoyable. The event kicks off with a nice pastathon the day before the run that is free of charge for the runners and their families. Race day is well organized as police officers keep the streets clear and the route is well marked. Volunteers line the route with water, sports drink, and oranges and are always making kind remarks to the runners, especially to the ones who are struggling. Fans line the streets for most of the race and are quite encouraging. The fans are not 5 deep along the route, but they make a nice turnout every year and every runner knows this helps. The weather is usually in the lower 60's and the humidity is not a real issue as the race is always held in early May. The course is mostly flat with a nice hill around the 19-20 mile mark that makes you think you have hit the dreaded wall. This marathon is well worth the $45 entry fee.

fantastic spring marathon
I have ran Lincoln 8 times and I really am depressed missing 2002, due to an achilles injury. Great pre-race pasta dinner [free] with a party-like atmosphere and a great post-race dinner [free also] with excellent guest speakers,Rogers,Shorter etc,. Course is fast, slight hills, but mostly flat. Great aid stations with lids on cups. Easy to get around start and finish- nice sized marathon for anybody. Plan on running this one as long as I can run.

Awesome marathon-- organization, course, value!!!
I have run this marathon twice and P.R.'d once here. The couse is mostly flat and slightly rolling at places which actually helps me by allowing me to use different part of leg muscles. The volunteers and spectators are helpful and enthusiastic. The water cups they handed out at the aid stations even have straws and lids on them. This is the only marathon I know that provides free pre-race pasta dinners for everyone -- runners, friends and families. Good course, great organization and a super value. A less discovered gem in marathon races.

A place to go fast.
I've run Lincoln twice, in 98 and 99. I plan to go back this year. If the weather is good, I can't imagine a faster non point to point course. Just enough 'hills' to loosen up the legs a little. Also the second half is out and back, so you have runners going the other way to look at. Volunteer support is excellent, and spectators good for a race this size.

LINCOLN MARATHON ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have only run 7 marathons in the past 2 years. The Lincoln Marathon was very well organized and I never had long to wait to get fluids...and the Nebraska fans were unreal. I will be running this marathon again this year and I'm looking forward to it!!!!! Keep up the great work Lincoln and I hope to get at least a few more minutes closer to qualifying for Boston!!!!!!

NOT a good race for slow runners and walkers
I walked the 1/2 marathon with my mom and niece (2001). At mile 6 and beyond water was sporadic. At one point I ran over to a gas station to beg a couple glasses of water. At mile 8 (?) there were still a couple volunteers, but no water. At mile 10 everyone had left the water station. There was a box with 4 or 5 cups of water sitting on it. We split one, knowing there were still others behind us. I've run the 1/2 before. The course is great, the fans are great, and apparently if you are in the main 'group' of runners, the organization appears fine. But the way the slower participants were ignored and left to fend for themselves really left a sour taste in my mouth. Last year 9 members of my family either ran or walked the 1/2 marathon. My dad would like me to come back and participate again this year, but I don't know...

Fast course, small-town feel, spirited fans
This was easily the most enjoyable marathon I have run, and was also the most enjoyable race I have ever entered. The course is flat (I was told it was 'rolling' - compared to a salt flat, perhaps), although there was a bit of a headwind (and a very slight uphill) from mile 13-20. The last 6 was slightly down with a nice tailwind, except for a couple blocks of uphill around mile 25 (which my legs were actually thankful for - a chance to use some new muscles). The course was actually too flat for my liking, and my hamstrings were a bit tight by the end from the 'consistent' muscle use. The spectators were wonderful. No, they weren't 10 deep everywhere, but I cannot recall any place where someone wasn't cheering. The whole event had a great small-town feel. I trained through this race and easily qualified for Boston, so I was as jazzed at the finish as I was during the race. Nice size field as well (~2000) so there is always someone to pace with, and good sized age group fields so a high place is earned, rather than a product of a small field. Nice time of year to run in Nebraska! They didn't loose my bag, the water stops had some nice extras (vaseline smeared on cardboard so you could grab a finger full to help out those warm spots). I'll do it next year as well.

Outstanding!!!!
Organized and well supported in every way! Great pre-race pasta feed the night before, great fast course ,and the fans support is awesome for a city of Lincoln's size. The National Guard support was second to none. The huge rows of American flags lining the street at the start and finish line gave this race even a more special meaning. The only complaint I would have was that in other marathons I have run in, the announcers have always stated every finisher's name as they crossed the finish line and their hometown. I believe finishing is a huge accomplishment whether you are a top finisher or not, although my time is average and my name was called, I noticed that hardly any of the slower finishers (in both the marathon and the half marathon)names and hometowns were announced...I think that every runner should have been recognized....

Very Good
I really enjoyed this one. The course was relatively flat the first 16-17 miles. What few hills there were, were either so gradual or so short that I didn't consider them a factor. There were a few more hills the last 10 miles, but I didn't consider any of them significant, except for the 4-block-long hill at the 25-mile marker. But I negotiated it without too much difficulty. Traffic control was very good. There were a couple of places along the route where my personal preference would have liked to see a few more officers, but even in those places, the local traffic was very courteous and very yielding to the runners. The fans may not have been many over the last half of the course, but the ones that were there made it a point to cheer for every runner that went by. They weren't there just to look for their favorite runner. Even the officers on duty offered words of cheer when their traffic control duties didn't preoccupy their attention. I would recommend this marathon to anyone. The National Guard band playing the National Anthem prior to the start of the race added a very classy touch to the whole event. It did get a little warm and humid for me in the last mile (the temp was in the low 70's), but human beings just can't control the weather.

Awesome!
This race is one of the best that you can go to because it is well supported. The Army National Guard uses this run as a qualifying run for all of its teams. They always get an excellent speaker, Bill Rodgers, and Frank Shorter the last two years. Class act all the way. The people of Lincoln are the finest anywhere.

Best organized marathon I've run yet
I have run over 20 marathons, and I always look forward to this one. I'm not much of a spring-time marathoner, but if I'm in shape, this is the only one I will go to. This is the only marathon where the water cups have lids and straws so you can get a good drink instead of spilling it all over...Great course, nice to head back from Holmes Lake.

One of my few repeat races
Few marathons tempt me to return, but this is one. Twice, in '95 and '97, I've traveled halfway across the country for this race (and expect I will again). Liked layout and concept of course, so hope (and think) recent changes have been minor. I'm not one who needs screaming crowds every step, anyway, so having local friends at a couple spots on the course has been just right. Overall, a solid, nice-size marathon, and a personal favorite.

My first marathon
Everything was better than I expected. I'm a 48 yr old male that only recently started to run. I found out what 'the wall' is. For a day or two I said never again. Then I signed up for the twin cities marathon october 8th. Here we go again.

No race takes better care of the athletes
Pre-race spaghetti meal is 1st class and open to everyone for free. The water & All-Sport have lids and straws so one can drink it instead of spill it-a small but important touch. The course is very good, but crowds are small. A huge plus is the National Guard, which sends its top marathoners to compete for a place on the All National Guard Team

My Favorite Marathon
The humidity was very bad and bothered me. I am a 50-stater and travel to many different marathons in many states each year. This one is one of my favorites overall. I like the meals before and afterwards with the families welcomed as well. It makes the finish so very much more enjoyable. It is very well organized. I liked it ending on the track better, but I do like this finish to, since it is more level and downhill than going up the incline to the track. This marathon is an excellent marathon. Since I live in Nebraska, I have ran it 9 times. A lot of other 50-staters tell me how much they enjoy themselves at your marathon. Some even say it is there favorite it too. It makes me very proud of my home marathon.

Lincoln definitely gives more than it takes.
Great beginning at the newly renovated Memorial Stadium (reason enough?). Incredibly organized. Not alot of crowd, but worth doing. Fortunate enough to have Frank Shorter as a guest there. Plenty of fluids and food before, during, and after race. Flat and fast. Run by tallest capital in the U.S.and Lincoln's premier park, but mainly neighborhoods and city. Beginning of May is perfect weather in Nebraska. Cool and drizzling in 1999.
