Good race at the beach

Race started an hour early due to construction. Scenic beginning and 2nd half, but many miles were on main roads getting to downtown. Mile marker distances were off around 7-9 which impacted the pace group. After turnaround at lake, the return path is narrow with some uneven footing and a little slippery over a few pedestrian bridges. It was difficult to pass during this part. The home stretch back downtown has a ~1mi gradual hill with a good headwind which turned downhill for a fast finish. The food and drink at the end was mediocre. I did really enjoy this race!

fast and fun!

I have run the half and full marathon here several times and it never disappoints! The current course is unique and beautiful! Starting at the beach with sunrise helps to build the excitement and the course has many long straight sections to build speed and lock into pace. The few gentle rolling hills provided great refief for my quads and helped keep yhe miles from becoming monotonous. I was worried about the out and back at Greenfield lake but the many spectators and cheering crowds stoked the fire. Seeing the other runners in both directions was motivating! The fast finish into town sped by. I enjoyed the after party and the seamless transportation by luxury coach bus back to the beach. I will do this race every time! Well organized and every detail accounted for!

Well run, fun race with great spectators

I flew down with my son to run a couple races. He did the 1 mile on Friday. Great night race, with positive energy, glow sticks and FAST times! Aaron left with a desire to run another. The marathon was a fun race, with really great spectators. Constant cheering, and great aid stations. The start was congested, but they held the race to accomodate. Not much you can do about it, but I'll head down earlier in the future. I'll be coming back for years to come. Thanks for a great experience.

A special place. A special race.

What a fun day. The race was so well organized. It started 10 minutes late due to an accident that had to be cleared out of the road but were totally transparent. Coral area was spacious and well organized. The course was great. Well-laid out, fantastic volunteers. It's a fast course. This race gets better every year and everyone - participants, volunteers, support teams- all wore smiles. Looking forward to it next year. This race delivers. Super stoked to see so many people show up for an event that certainly showed up for everyone.

Fast, Encouraging, Well Planned

The Novant Health Wilmington Marathon is designed by runners, planned by runners, and well planned. Each year they continue to make it bigger and better. They consider everyone's feedback and have wonderful accommodations. It is a 'small town' race with the perks that a large race offers. There are 'lonely' stretches but they only last a short time before you're encouraged by another group or entertainment section of the course. The beach start is beautiful and even when it didn't start at the beach, there are plenty of beautiful views. The post race activities are very nice with beer options, food, entertainment (music), etc. There is so much planning involved and the runners best experience is the main mission, that's very obvious. Much of the Wilmington community comes out to support and you can't beat the downtown nightlife or a day at the beach!

Meh.

The race organization seems to want to put on a truly wonderful race. The volunteers are terrific. However: - The start is way too congested. The race starts in a small beach town, and it's not made to handle 2,000+ people. - Because people were backed up trying to get to the start, the race started late. - The course is blah. Lots of highways and main roads. Much of the second half is in a residential neighborhood that is nice, but nothing special. - The course runs long. That residential neighborhood has runners in both directions for ~8 miles on windy roads. It's impossible to run tangents. - The course is flat, but not overly fast. There are multiple hairpin turns. As an added 'treat', the final half mile has eight 90-degree turns. - I don't care about medals, but if you do, you won't like these. Tiny and cheap. It's an OK local race. But I sure wouldn't travel to run this one. There are much better out there.

Well laid out course, well organized, and fast

I've been looking forward to this new course for a couple of years now and I must say I was not disappointed. It flowed nicely, was super fast even with some of the overall elevation, had good crowd support in strategic spots, the stations were in point and had plenty of water/Gatorade, it was super organized, and the overall atmosphere was electric for the size of the marathon.

Great coastal race!

Loved the course, starting at the beach and ending on the riverfront. Pre race communication was very clear to avoid any confusion. Cant wait to race it again!

Beautiful North Carolina Race!

This is a beautiful, scenic race. The volunteers were cheerful and plentiful. There was always some encouragement along the way! Lots of food at the finish line, gatorade, water and a few gu stations along the course. Perfect running weather! Logistics were made simple--I stayed at the Embassy Suites in Wilmington and it was steps away from the Expo and a short walk to the shuttle pickup. They also provided a grab and go breakfast. Kudos to the race organizer!!!

Beautiful scenery but course could be improved

The weather was great, beautiful scenery along the course. However, that extra loop should have been clearly marked since this is at a point where runners are fatigued and shouldn't have to try and figure out which way to go. I ended up going the wrong way and added mileage. I didn't know whether I had done the 2nd loop. I figured it out when I passed mile 24 mark and my watch was around 22 miles. Just a simple sign saying 22 mile marker to the right would have been enough to help me figure out which way to go. Fair amount of spectators but most were not very lively. One group of young women were very enthusiastic and greatly appreciated. The expo was great, lots of vendors to provide any last minute things needed for race day.

Could be much better...

First, the good - the weather was about perfect. Nice cool morning. Enough porta potties at start. Mostly decent course. And the bad - absolutely no signs around the campus to make it easier to find the Expo building or the proper parking lot. Late start. Unnecessary double loops and in-and-outs that could have been avoided on the course. Gatorade and water ALWAYS in the wrong paper cups. And the cardinal sin of marathons - no medals at the finish line. Apparently, they didn't arrive in time. Well, that's not your first rodeo, is it? Shame.

Great marathon

I have run this half marathon several times and every time has been great. The weather was perfect this year and the course was beautiful. The race organizers do a fantastic job! Planning to run next year for the 10 year anniversary.

Fun, organized, fast course, professional

I've run this marathon three times and the half twice. Every year seems to get better in regards to the course, logistics, registration, and swag. The whole weekend is a blast from the dinner and speaker to the 5k to the race and awards. The few snags that have happened were handled efficiently and professionally, more so than in any other race I've run. I will do this even every year.

My first Marathon went GREAT, except my WALL! =)

This was my first marathon. I thought about starting smaller and flatter, which this race is sure to provide. When you are new, a Marathon combined with a Half Marathon that has less than 3,500 people is IDEAL. Very surprising as the area the race is located at is very popular amongst tourists. I believe because of this and if it continues that this race will become a "destination run". What great exposure for the local area and for people who have never seen the great southeast beach community. The expo was really need because it was at the local university (UNC-Wilmington) and on a Friday. (Did I mention Saturday races with Friday expos BLOW Sunday races with Saturday expos out the water?! If not, now I did) The area had vendors of anything imaginable that you could pick up/discuss with for the evening before your race. Even cooler was the fact that there was a 1MILE race and 5K happening for those who don't want to get their feet wet (no pun intended) for the Half or Full lengths yet. Now let's get to the nitty gritty. The race begins at Wrightsville Beach, NC (My favorite NC beach and one of the top 20 I've ever been to in my life-no humble brag here, I have seen MANY beaches & and if I wasn't from there I would say the best ever). The race start is in a good area at Wrightsville Beach park so plenty of room for everyone. If you happen to have friends with a place, or rent a place (hotel or condo) or even something right over the bridge & it is the perfect warm up to the start line. The start is right before 7AM and this is great because during daylight savings time part of your run is sunrise over the bridges ON the water. AMAZING. I even took videos. I already wrote a review that revolved around my feelings and how I did so I will skip all that, but I will say everyone should read it & I explained it in all its glory. The course goes through Landfall, another loop around the popular loop on the island, and you get to cross the main bridge a few times as well! Part of the ending for this race is the beautiful Airlie Road and then you get on a trail of sorts that runs back to the university. The encouragement from all the crowds in all these areas was phenomenal. There were more aid stations than I would ever need that is for sure! DJ's, beer tents, and every station goes with a university led theme & which leads me to my conclusion for this race. This race SHOULD always happen during March Madness. It just fits. That means the NCAA tournament. Even better when it lines up with St. Patrick's day because it gives you the run in the morning and ability to celebrate after (just google how fun Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach are during regular parts of the year, so imagine a HOLIDAY!) This race happens after you are used to springing forward in time so I hope that will continue. See above about sunrises. I can't find anything wrong with this run other than it was challenging for me because it was my first. That being said, it gave me the "bug". All in all a great race, come check it out and while you're at it make sure you check out the entire surrounding areas for a long vacation with friends and family. I bet you'll come back. Signed, First Marathoner who will run many more THANKS to the Wrightsville Beach Marathon Madness

Great location, fast course, earned my BQ!

I love this race! I'm a local, have run the half 4 times, and 2018 was my 3rd straight year running the marathon. The course has been improved each of these years, it starts on the beach at sunrise, weaves through two beautiful neighborhoods (Landfall and Autumn Hall), includes scenic miles on two different paved trails (Summer Rest Trail and Cross City Trail), and ends on the campus of UNC Wilmington. The race staff is always so helpful, the volunteers and aid stations are enthusiastic and plentiful. The March Madness theme combined with St. Patty's Day made the race even more fun - so many athletes in costumes and wearing their green! If you are looking for a fast race, a PR, or BQ, you should run this race! I am Boston bound for 2019!!!

Awesome Marathon

What a great event!!! It's a flat course with beautiful views of the intercostal, UNCW, and through beautiful neighborhoods! There are people cheering and rooting for you throughout the whole course! It is run by people who care about each runner's experience and go above and beyond to ensure it is a great event! I highly recommend this race and the after party too!

I love this race for many reasons

I have run the Wrightsville Beach race four times(three halves, one full). The small town feel and great crowd support with the March Madness theme make it a really fun event. The course is excellent for racing, especially if you are looking to Boston Qualify (which I did in 2015). Several really fun parts of the race course include a lovely neighborhood with residents out cheering and also the Cross City Trail which covers several miles before the finish line. The lounge pants that were included with registration are a welcome change from the ordinary race shirt. This year, they were green with a St. Patricks Day theme and everyone seemed to love them. However, there was one glitch. The finisher medals did not arrive in a timely fashion so runners were disappointed at the finish line. I agree with the prior poster that this is a big deal, but honestly, it did not bother me since I knew we would eventually receive them. Overall, this race gets 5 stars and I will continue to come back to run it most every year.

BROKE THE CARDINAL RULE

I am giving this marathon negative feedback because it was not their first attempt and they botched several key items. The course was nice but the race started late, the bag drop had one table with 3 volunteers trying to take 3500 bags which does not work and the biggest issue was they did not have the medals at the finish line. This is the biggest problem and a runner from 2017 said they had medal issues as well last year. I paid for the race and flight to run and want my medal when I finish not two weeks later. You knew 364 days ago the race was on this day so there is not excuse not to have them. You really need to get organized if you want people to run your race.

Great race and expo

The organization of this race was great. The course was beautiful even though you basically run 2 13.1s. They call this Wrightsville Beach even though it seams that 90% of it is run in Wilmington...poor Wilmington...no credit! I have no complaints, the weather was great and I PR'd. It started to rain at the end, but everything is held in a giant tent at the end. What a great setup!

Great Event!!!

I have run over 20 marathons and this is a very well organized event. Whether you want a good time or to have a good time, this marathon is for you. It is a fun event that the community seems to support. Flat course with some very small rolling hills to keep it from being a painful pancake-flat course. I have been a pace group leader each of the past four years and I definitely think this is a good course for a BQ/PR. The course has some repetition, but this allows friends and family to see you multiple times. The weather can be unpredictable this time of year, but an early start time of 6:40 helps most runners avoid the hottest part of the day.

Beautiful & fast beach town race

This was my first race in my new hometown and I loved it. Highlights for me were temperature in the 50s, views, well organized, flat course and supportive crowds. The expo was nicely done and the after party/band was a lot of fun. I come from bigger city racing (NYC marathon, Vegas) and this was a very nice change of pace. Would and have recommended it. I've already signed up for the full in 2016!

Well Pleased with Wrightsville

This was my 3rd marathon in a year, and by far, the best experience. The expo is small, but I am not one that shops a lot or wants to spend tons of time there. I went the first day and didn't have any issues with parking or getting my bib and shirt (which is one of my favorite race shirts now - love the material and fit). I did appreciate the course info session, as I had questions about the mats on the drawbridge (new this year). Shuttle service on race day was a breeze. Even had port o johns there while you wait. No issues at the start either (well, the port o johns were all bunched together which made for interesting time getting in line for those). For those concerned with the loops, I didn't mind the repeated sections. I honestly felt that it helped get my mind off the miles to know that I would see my family 3-4 times at certain mile markers. They were able to easily park near the finish area and walk across Military Cutoff when they knew I would be coming up. When running the full, it is a tad lonely going back out to repeat the first small loop, but my pace group (Shout out to Christine Rthe pacer for the 3:45 group!) was great so it made up for the lack of spectators there. I can't say enough about the 'March Madness' themed aid stations and the Landfall community. Outstanding! Different flavors of Gatorade (PLEASE keep the different flavors for next year. Variety is good!), water, bananas, oranges, gels all offered. Flat coke and Twizzlers were on the full course. The Landfall residents even had their own 'buffets' laid out of Dunkin Donuts, coffee cake, mimosas, and orange juice. (No way I could've eaten those things, but for anyone with those types of cravings in the last miles there you go). Probably lots of other choices, but those are what I could see. I can't count how many times I was told how great I was doing or asked if I needed anything. I was running with the pace group up until mile 19, and my right leg decided the day was done. The cheers and the enthusiasm from the aid stations/Landfall crew kept me positive for the rest of my miles. There were a few spots in the neighborhood that were quiet, but nothing to make you feel like it was a 'ghost town'. Finishing the race was a little different with the few quick turns, but the music and Natty Green/Sam Adams made up for it. My family was able to get to me immediately, and we didn't have any issues when leaving the festivities. We didn't spend a lot of time at the after party (due to travel), but since my husband and another family member have decided to do their first fulls at Wrightsville next year, we will make sure to hang out and enjoy! I love that this is a 'smaller' race, and I hope it stays that way. Looking forward to '16!

Great Time, Great Race

Ran the half marathon in 2014 and enjoyed the experience so much that I returned for the full in 2015. The race staff is unbelievably friendly and helpful. The course offers a variation of neighborhoods and businesses. Nice, flat course, fast enough that I ran a PR. The spectators were full of energy and surprisingly loud for the numbers.

By far the best organized races I have ran.

Traveled 5 hours to participate in the marathon and was not disappointed. The activities the night before were awesome and there were many great vendors to assist you with everything you would need to be successful. You could enjoy the speakers while having a pasta dinner with all the fixings (including free Samuel Adams beer). The course was flat but had a lot of turns and even with the mat over the drawbridge you still had to be very careful crossing. There were a lot of aid stations manned by college teams with everything from water to candy bars not to mention the support and cowbells along the way. I have never seen that many spectators at a race before, it was like everyone in the town came out to cheer you on. At the end everyone that finished received a very nice finishers metal (bling) and again free Samuel Adams beer. This is by far one of the most organized and most fun races I have participated in and will definitely run it again.

I keep coming back and will again in 2016!

This is a GREAT RACE! I really enjoy the early pre-dawn morning start. I read some complaints about this but are you here to race and appreciate the cool early morning start or here to spectate? I get wanting it to be scenic and fast but I can't stand racing in the heat of the day and prefer this concept. The aid stations are always so much fun and the local colleges really outdo themselves every year! I guess the only thing I would request are some considerations for athletes with food allergies. My son is gluten and peanut intolerant and there are almost never any post race foods for him and me to consume. Thank you for a great race and see you next year!

Flat fast course

Beautiful race course. Starts on the beach, then through a gated community twice. There are parts where the spectator attendance and support is heavy and then some not as much. Race is run very well, by a runner. Weather can be iffy but it's generally cooler. Easy to get to and from the start and finish line. Good atmosphere with a lot of college alumni attendance.

Wrightsville Beach: A WINNER!

I am glad I picked Wrightsville Beach to knock NC off the list of my 50 state goal. A great course, great expo, and great supporters. The water views and gated community course was awesome and the NCAA Basketball tie-in was fantastic. A must for locals thinking about running or for 50 staters who have not yet hit NC.

Fun marathon with a flat and fast course.

I loved the Wrightsville Beach Marathon! The two-loop course is very flat except for a few gentle rollers in the Landfall neighborhood (which is beautiful, BTW). The aid stations were plentiful and well-stocked, and each had multiple port-o-johns. The post-race was great, with a live band, free NC craft beer, and a large food tent. The age group awards were custom-printed growlers, that you could get filled at a nearby beer store - very unique! I also thought Tom Clifford, and his crew, did an outstanding job organizing this event... I'll definitely be back!

loved it

Loved this race. So well organized. The water stops were fun with the college themes. Spectators were great along the course. I was nervous about the double loop - hadn't ever done that before, but actually really liked it. The loops were slightly different at the end and you knew what you were in for. There were some easy rolling hills in the neighborhood, but nothing crazy at all. The finish line activity - band, food, large party tent - all very nice. Inside the tent were tables and food for runners-nice touch. I would recommend this marathon - it is a faster course. I got a BQ - so needless to say - I'm happy!

Very Good Event

I would like to say a few things about Wrightsville Beach Marathon. First, I was pleasantly surprised by the variation in the course. I have run 2 other beach location marathons I will never go back to them. I was afraid this race would be more of the same & I was wrong. Great course, just enough variation to not get bored. 2nd, the number of aid stations was really outstanding. My wife and I had run a half-marathon in February as a tune-up. Great half-marathon but it was a warm day & their lack of aid stations became a real issue for many runners Wrightsville had no such issue and that was a plus. 3rd the setup from hotels, to bus, to packet pick-up, & finish was excellent&our hotel was within walking or warm-up jog of all we needed to do. We have both told everyone how well organized your marathon is & that it should be a must on their calendar.

Best out of the 'Big 3'

Hands down the best race course out of the 'Big 3' races in the south east (Charleston, Myrtle Beach & Wrightsville Beach). I've run all 3 in the last 2 months and Wrighsville Beach by far the best course. No camber issues like Myrtle Beach, No rail roads crossing and industrial parks to run thru like Charleston! Wrightsville course truly flat and no hills at all. Great net decent finish for the last 1.5 miles. After party first rate! Great craft beers (Natty Greene's & Sam Adams) a whole separate area just for runners to eat after wards with tables! Will be doing this race next year again!

Great race, great organization, great spectators.

Thoroughly enjoyed the race. Looking back at comments from previous years, it looks like the organizers took the negative comments under consideration and did everything they could to address them. This year it was a two-loop course, which I knew before arriving because it was posted clearly on the website. The area you run through twice is absolutely beautiful! Aid stations were well stocked and frequent. Volunteers were great, helpful and enthusiastic! Spectators were sparse in places, but I expected that because of the smallish nature of the town and race. It's not a race I'll travel 1000 miles for every year, but I fully expect to be back to run this race from time to time in the future.

Beautiful race but dangerous spectators

Fast course, plentiful supplies and superb volunteers, beautiful city and entertainment. but spectators were outrageous, crossing in front of runners without any respect, as unsafe as possible. If the safety improves I will be back again next year !

Best race I have done - responding to previous

I just want to say that this race was probably one of the best I have ever done. I have gone to Myrtle Beach, Boston and Chicago and yes those races are big, but there was a lot of attention to detail here. I am also defending the comment below about the last bus. There was a life threatening accident on the bus route which is why it was late. Nobody knew that bus was late. I was on it so I know....If you were at the bus station when the event organizers posted, you would have easily made it. Those of us who got there late, that is our fault, not the races. T-shirts - great material, they even had a pony tale on the girls shirt. Post race party - very big, free beer from Mother Earth, Blowing Rock, and Natty Greens. Big 12 foot TV and HUGE tent for the expo and finish line. I ran the full and course nutrition was spot on. Keep up the great work Wrightsville Beach, this race is on its way to becoming a top pick. Thanks for a great experience!

Nice try, but wouldn't run this one again

So this was my 4th marathon. I was enticed by the 'flat, fast race' and 'ocean views'. Not true for either. The course is flat, but the loops and redundency did not lead to a faster race for me. The expo was limited which should have been my first clue. The start in the dark (very poor lighting) was disappointing at best and an indicator of what was ahead. Never saw the ocean...we started in the dark and it doesn't take long to run by the water (its very brief). The loops in the gated community were incredibly boring (the spectators and volunteers there were great and I was very appreciative), but really multiple loops here and at the end? With few runners, it was a lonely course. Positives: The spectators along Military Cutoff and in the gated community were wonderful! Ample water stations and gels. However, I wouldn't run it again nor would I recommend it for the full marathon.

Great Event - Superb Organization

Beautiful Area. Course is a little repetitive but a very enjoyable run. The route went through a very nice neighborhood. Our group was only in town for 20 hours but that was enough to know that we will be back. Spectators were out in full force wearing collegiate gear in the 'March Madness' spirit (not Chicago in numbers but genuine and very enthusiastic). This course was very well marked and all turns were staffed with volunteers. There was plenty of bike support monitoring the course. I like the quantity and quality of music on the course. I enjoyed the size of this race very much. Not super huge so you couldn't run your pace but not so small that you were running solo the entire time. I love the T-shirt. It is a thin cotton shirt. I have so many tech shirts from marathons that I never wear. I will wear this shirt a lot. The high socks with the race logo were very original and cool. I highly recommend this race. This is a quality event. The running community around Wrightsville Beach obviously takes pride in this event. Great Job to all involved.

Course needs to be improved

Course: The course is flat, and what should have been a PR for me ended up being my worst marathon time. There are multiple loops (3) in the gated community of Landfall, which gets boring very fast. It's discouraging when you see the sign for 14 miles and a few hundred feet away you see a sign for 17 miles. This happens multiple times during the race. The out and back from mile 23 to mile 26 is also tough. The only time you're at the beach it's before sunrise, so you never see the water. They really need to do something about the course. Organization: They did not have enough trolley's running from the finish to the start, so people were still getting there right up to start time. The finish was also disappointing. I run just over 11 minute miles, so by the time I finished they were closing down most of the post race activities. There wasn't much food by the time I finished at 5 hours; there must not have been much left for those finishing after me. Lots of water stops, enthusiastic course volunteers and students from a local tech school giving post race massages were great - to me this made the race. The organizers also kept emphasizing the cut off time for finishers. One woman I ran with was really upset that she would get pulled off the course. It was her first marathon and she was really worried she wouldn't be able to finish the last 9 miles in time. Fortunately, she wasn't far behind me when I turned around at mile 24. I understand the organizers have limits, but they need to be careful on how they present this information to runners. Spectators: There were lots of great spectators on Military Cutoff Road, which you run up 3 times during the race, but once you enter Landfall, spectators are sparse. The volunteers and the spectators who do turn out in Landfall are great; there just aren't enough of them. Overall: I wouldn't run the race again unless there is a significant change in the course.

Great Race, Great spectators!!

This was my first marathon, so take it for what it's worth... Weather: First off, being able to go to the beach (day before race) in mid-March and the weather is ~85 degrees, makes for a wonderful weekend trip. Race day, was perfect running weather for me, high 60's, overcast and misty. Course: While the lack of running on the actual island, the run course was super nice i.m.o., I have no problem running past million dollar home after million dollar home. Although, he second loop though Landfall had me directionally lost (thanks to overcast mist and no sun), but course markers and staff were clearly identifiable. Only other 'wish' would have been to finish coming up the main street in Mayfaire just in front of the movie theater for a more dramatic finish line. Spectators: Were awesome, NCSU wolfpack club was by far the best aid station, and couldn't believe there was a high school prep band kicking out songs for hours as well! There were plenty of good signs and costumes to keep most motivated, although they dissipated when the halfers finished. Overall, I would give a 4.5 and will most likely do again.

Super race, super crowds

I did this race for the second time and loved the new course even more than I liked the 2010 course. The biggest changes were that we spent more time at Wrightsville Beach and the horseshoe turns were taken out of the Landfall community. Both changes made the race faster. Although this is a small race, the crowds were electric. Running the couple miles on Military Cutoff (which you do three times) was nuts. People cheering, high-fiving, etc. It felt like a much bigger race than it actually is. I couldnt believe the number of people out there cheering us on. The section of the loops in the community were nice because you got to race the people ahead and behind you, as the second time through there was a small loop that you ran against the people behind you (cheering, high fives, etc.), and the next time you ran with everyone. EVERYTHING WAS CLEARLY MARKED. Having the loops made the race go by very quickly and you are able to break it up mentally into small parts instead of thinking about the whole 26.2 miles. There was fluid (water and HEED) at every two miles or so. There were also gels at a few spots. There were plenty of volunteers at these spots that you had no problems getting as much as you needed. The race organization was A+. Huge number of friendly volunteers, seamless packet pickup and race day start, and great food/beer at the finish. I would recommend this race to anyone. It is a great first timer race and a great race to get a fast time.

Fast Flat Course with Good Support

I'm from here so I'm a bit partial to sleeping in my own bed and getting up to race. Transportation and parking was easy and convenient. It's a fairly small race so you don't have to stand in line 4ever. Good energy at the start and the crowd thinned quickly so you could get into pace early. Tons of aid/water stops b/c it's a loop course. I saw one every couple miles at latest. Great energy from aid workers and support group. Also, you're in the south so the spectators and other runners are great. Loop through residential isn't scenic but lots of pretty houses to look at. Some residents come out but but there are times when you're alone with your thoughts...which was good for me. Great ending with lots of cheering. Post race amenities were very good. lots of massage tables and good aid tent. Had a band and beer at the end too. You can tell this race is directed by a runner. Lots of attention to runner detail. Only bad part of race in my opinion is that at about mile 22 you run close enough to the finish line that you can see and hear people and then have to treck back out onto probably the most boring part of the race (through a not as nice residential community) and you're always looking for the turnaround. However, that was also the most heavily spectated part of the course and the loudest cheering sections (I think just people came out of their house and were rowdy...which was awesome that late in the game when you need a push). I'll run it again, and not just b/c it's in my backyard.

Good for first-timers or for chasing a PR or BQ.

Though I prefer trail races, I am occassionally coaxed out of the woods to hit the asphalt, as was the case for the Wrightsville Beach Marathon. After the soreness has worn off, I'm glad I entered. This preference for trails is the primary reason the course got three stars. It's certainly a nicer course than Charlotte. Crowd Support: Not important to me, but there were a few spots, like Military Cutoff Road, where there were quite a few onlookers, as well as aid station volunteers. In the Landfall Community, where much of the race occurs, it was spotty, with mostly volunteers and a few residents who came out to watch. Aid Stations: Hard to say; they had enough volunteers to where you didn't have to go to the table, so if they had something beyond the water, Heed, and Hammer Gels they were handing out, I didn't see it. Course: Traffic was not at all an issue, so the only negative for me was the out-and-back that came right beside the finish but at mile 22 for the marathon. I had mixed feelings about the many loops within the Landfall gated community. The community was nice and it kept us off the main roads, but I could see where the loops might annoy some people. Pre-Race: I saw other comments about the tight quarters for the expo. I picked up my packet fairly early on Saturday so crowds were not an issue. It was a five-step process, though. Table 1: sign in and get number. Table 2: get chip. Table 3: get chip activated in computer. Table 4: get water bottle. Walk through expo. Table 5: get shirt. The expo was pretty small, but I rarely need/want anything at them so that was ok by me. Bill Rodgers spoke at the pasta dinner and ran the half-marathon. I have a pet peeve about no race-day packet pickup. While I partially understand it from the race director's view, it is annoying for anyone who lives say an hour or two away who would be driving up on race day. This means that if they have no one who can pick up their packet, they have to make a two to four hour drive the day before to get their stuff. We stayed for the weekend at this race, but for people who live closer, it could be an issue. Host Hotel: I did not stay there but it is a nice facility according to family members who have stayed. Post Race: Takes place on the grounds of an outdoor mall (town center), but since it's Sunday morning, the only people there are racers, volunteers, and spectators. There was a beer/pizza tent, a couple of sponsors' booths, optional massages, a main stage with live entertainment. Awards: The marathon awards began at 11:30. I did not stay for them but did see the half-marathon awards. Pint glasses went to all award winners and the overall and masters winners got cash also. The medallion was a substantial piece of metal shaped like a wave with the race name. On the back "26.2" was stamped. Intangibles: The race started and finished at different locations and most of the parking was at the finish. I saw one commenter complaining about having to walk "several hundred yards" to the start from where they parked. I have to assume they have not been in many marathons. If you wanted to park at the finish, there were trolleys taking people to the start. If you parked at the start, there were post-race trolleys taking people back to the start. There was also a comment about the lack of porta-jons on the course. I seem to recall seeing quite a few near aid stations and scattered around Landfall so maybe that was fixed between 2010 and 2011. In summary, I think it was a well run event, especially given that they are in only their second year. It's unfortunate that it falls on the same day as Tobacco Road Marathon, as that forces some people to decide between the two. I'm sure I'll come back again to Wrightsville, though.

Lot of Turns

There sure were a lot of turns in this race. The course didn't seem to follow any sort of flow. Winding through a gated community a couple of times. Never saw the beach. If it were daylight during the Wrightsville part I guess we could have. How is this called the Wrightsville Beach Marathon if it's mostly run in Wilmington? There were a lot of energetic spectators. Fast, but not too exciting course. Post-race food could've been better: Bananas, Doritos, cookies, soft drinks, water, and beer. That's about all I saw. Get a protein shake to be one of your many sponsors and help us with recovery. And that's another thing. I was put off that the race logo was small compared to the large sponsor logo. The race logo blends in with the red shirt, while the large, bright, corporate logo doesn't. Maybe a minor issue, but maybe not. I sure like races with a lower-key feel, not driven by corporate sponsorship.

A flat race with good potential

This was a nice, flat, small race. ideal for a BQ. Having said that, this race was lacking a few amenities. There were ample port-a-johns at the start but only 3 (maybe 4) along the course that I counted! There was a paucity of water stops, especially between critical miles 19-22; moreover, the water was allotted per small, mouthwash-size cups, which I think were decorated with a "Finding Nemo" motif. More water stops with larger cups and port-a-johns would benefit the runners' safety. The route through Landfall was nearly impossible to preview, as this neighborhood is a gated community, and the race director was of no assistance. One has to contact the realty company to get a day pass or know someone who lives there. Passing the finish and watching half marathoners walking back with their medals were quiet a tease. It was also discouraging to run through desolate neighborhoods for the last 5 miles. Lastly, can a marathon assume the name of a town through which only one mile is run? It was a singular experience to have run an inaugural marathon.

Not great for marathoners

I was sick during this race and my expected time was somewhat of a disappointment. More disappointing, however, was the course. It was really boring. The residential area and bridge at the start were scenic, but aside from that, the course was a mess. Two loops through some pretty boring parts - not a lot of marathon support (half sounded good), a weird rocky path, and an ending with odd twists and turns. It was the inaugural race, but I hope that they consider changing the course. I also have to comment on the spectators who seemed to have no idea where the finish was, and the spectators that were saying, "Almost there" to the marathoners who were only halfway through the race.

Worth running but needs quirks worked out

This was a fast marathon worth running. I like the small marathons; they have a great homey feel. I thought that doubling through the landfall community would be a drag, but I found it comforting to know the area after seeing it previously the first time. Fans were sporadic but very friendly. Turns were all well manned and clear. That being said, along with the previous commentator, there are some things to work on.... Why start in an area that you can't drive to and have to walk several hundred yards to? Why not start at the beach parking lot? It was an odd starting place for sure. Why 6:30, when the sun hasn't even risen either? There are sunrise calendars that show when the sun will rise each day of the year. Like the previous commentator, there were way too many turns... especially in the last 5 miles. It was very annoying and de-motivating. I would suggest running through the landfall community a third time rather than have so many turns over and over. They even had us run over two dirt road patches... certainly there was a better option than that. Also, my Garmin 405 showed 26.42 miles; another guy I ran into said his 305 showed 26.41, and he missed the three hour-mark by a couple of seconds. That's really frustrating if the course was off! Further improvements would be a more significant swag bag - an ill-fitting, Thai-made shirt with no other goodies, not even a course map/brochure. I have received much better from a $90 race! The post-race seemed to lack a little organization as well. I was in the first batch of marathoners back so maybe they weren't ready, but I found myself wandering through a small hut looking for fluids and couldn't find any Gatorade or other drinks besides water. Then I found 5-gallon dispensers with cups similar to those passed out in the race... disappointing after seeing the same thing mile after mile. At the end of the race you want a bottle of Gatorade, don't you? There were oranges and bananas - the norm - and there were pizza boxes too, but they were empty! Finally, i thought the 26.3 beer garden was a good idea. But it was in a small hut, with nowhere to sit and relax - just some coolers with taps coming out. It seemed like it failed to deliver on the hype. All in all, I would run this race again, but it has some quirks to be worked out to make it a really viable option for those other than locals.

Volunteers of this race were EXCELLENT!!!

The expo for the race was very crowded due to it being in such a confined room. Organizers did a great job in providing transportation from Mayfaire to the start line. Adequate restroom facilities were provided at the start and thoughout the race. Would recommend 2 portojohns at the water stops that had them. For those of us who finished near the end the folks at Landfall were great and still there. I will stumble through this marathon again.

Fun Race

Course - The course was well marked and well manned with volunteers. Positive points: 1. This course is flat and fast. 2. Wrightsville Beach and the Landfall Area are very secic and pleasant to run through. 3. Vehicle traffic was not an issue in this race. Negative points: 1. The course has many half-marathoners who are jogging/walking when marathon runners begin their second loop through Landfall. At times it is difficult to pass within the designated running lane on the second loop do to participants walking/jogging up to 4 people abreast. This is not a huge problem, but slightly annoying when the legs are starting to get tired. 2. Lots of 90 degree (or sharper) turns in the last 5 miles. As a runner, it seems that this problem only gets worse as you get closer to the finish. In the final mile there is one section where runners make a 90 degree right, run approx. 150 meters, make a 180 degree u-turn, run 150 meters, and then make another hairpin 90 degree turn. In addition there is another 90 degree left turn only 40-50 meters before the finish making the finish line invisible until you are already there. The course would be more runner friendly if some of these sharp turns could be avoided late in the race. With all of this being said this course is very flat and fast - it is just difficult to hold a steady pace with all of the turns in the final miles. Orginization - Other than starting about 10 minutes later than scheduled I thought this race was very well organized. I will list a few areas for potential improvement, but these are very minor. 1. the expo area seemed to be cramped into a very small area. 2. The yellow arm bands given to marathon runners were too loose and could easily fall off once they became sweaty and wet. This was a minor problem, not really a big deal - just annoying. 3. Lots of walking to the starting line, then more walking to the 'bag bus', and then more walking back to the starting line. Once again, not a big deal but something that could be addressed in the future. Spectators: I wasn't expecting much given that this is a fairly small race that starts pretty early on a Sunday morning. I was actually suprised by the number of Landfall residents that came out to watch the race. Everyone that I encountered along the course was friendly and encouraging.
