Great course, great organization, so-so spectators
I signed up for the Foot Levelers for the challenging course, and I was not disappointed! From Miles 5-9, and 17-19, there are tremendous elevations and descents. The rest of the course is so-so, and meanders through residential areas, parks and such. There are a few areas where one has to cross a road with vehicle traffic, which is made easy by the volunteers. I expected more of the course to be in wooded areas, so the suburban running was disappointing. The spectators in the hills were magnificent, not so much in the city between miles 22 and 26.

If you only ever do ONE race, do this one!
Absolutely beautiful course, challenging but not impossible (walking is your friend), the views can't be beat. The entire race weekend is well organized and super friendly, cannot recommend highly enough!

One of my favorite road marathons
The course is challenging and not for heart fainted. The views are spectacular. Outstanding aid stations... Most memorable ladies who offered mimomas and champange with strawberries at the top of Peakwood Dr someting I've never seen before.

A Truly Outstanding Race Experience!
When I first heard the tag line of 'America's Toughest Road Marathon' I knew I had to give it a try. This race is definitely very tough and by the end you have earned every bit of it. Roanoke really comes together for this race! I loved all the houses with little kids with water or Gatorade in addition to all the official aid stations which were fantastic! I loved the magnitude of each of the 3 mountains! The cheers, the music, it was all wonderful. Then there was the Blue Ridge itself...this is what you come for. The views are stunning and incredible. If you can, stop for a moment and take it all in. Take the mimosas, even if you don't drink them and say 'thank you' for coming out and supporting this amazing marathon. I loved the expo, the city and the 2018 belt buckle medal makes this my new favorite race! No real cons to speak of...the swag is nice. T-shirt, plus socks! I wish the race hats and other souvenirs were cheaper. But this race should be on your list...it's a truly outstanding race experience.

My favorite!
This is a top-notch event - it's a gorgeous, very challenging course and the race organizers and volunteers are outstanding. The race director stands at the finish for hours and greets each finisher with a handshake or high five. The locals are also great - the community is extremely supportive. Many residents offer encouragement and treats and some even thank runners for coming to Roanoke to run 'our marathon'. I've run the BRM 5 times, look forward to it each year, and rave about it to anyone who will listen! :)

Challenging but spectacular small marathon!
I absolutely loved this marathon - it was #42 for me, and ranks in my top 5. Yes, it probably is America's Toughest Road marathon, but the amazing views were well worth it. Super friendly volunteers and spectators, and so many little touches that made it unique. Like a trumpet sounding when we got to the top of Roanoke Mt, and champagne and chocolates at the top of the hardest climb (Peakwood, at mile 18). I also appreciated getting stretched out by a chiropractor for free at the finish line festival. These people take care of their runners. For most mere mortals, Blue Ridge isn't a marathon to run for time. The hills will beat you up, especially the downhills. But it was heaps of fun. I'll be back.

Fun and challenging course with beautiful views
I finally got brave enough to run the full marathon after running the half for several years. I'm glad I did it. The course is challenging (roughly 30 minutes longer than a 'flat' 4 hour marathon with equal effort). There aren't as many spectators compared to larger marathons, but the ones that were there were great. Some had mini aid stations like one group handing out watermelon cubes on a stick, others with donuts, and one with espresso. I enjoyed a mimosa after running up Mill Mountain and champagne after reaching the top of Peakwood. The volunteers were very friendly. The views were beautiful and I didn't need to worry about tripping over other runners after the first half mile (unlike Marine Corps where I couldn't take a chance to look at the monuments without tripping or getting stepped on during the first 20 miles). The technical shirts, finisher medals and age group awards were really nice. Adding long hills to my long runs helped make the uphills very reasonable, but the downhills still hurt (both during the race and for several days later). This is a nice bucket list marathon.

Well-organized, beautiful, tough race!
I ran the half marathon in 2015 and returned for 2016. This is such a difficult race with nonstop incline/decline. It definitely earns you bragging rights for completing 'America's Toughest.' However, the beauty of running through the Blue Ridge Mountains is unparalleled. There is no feeling like running to the top of Mill Mountain, seeing that star, and looking down over the Roanoke valley! Then you get to run down the other sideso fun! Another highlight is the Peakwood neighborhood. The inclines feel even steeper than Mill Mountain, but the residents are so supportive and encouraging. The whole neighborhood comes out to throw a party for the runners.
This is also one of the best organized races I have ever run. There are water stops about every mile and a half, many with food/GU/etc. With a run of this difficulty, you need those frequent water stops. I'm able to leave my handheld water bottle at home without worrying about getting dehydrated. Everyone's name is announced as they cross the finish line, and the race director gives out high fives to all the runners. The race coincides with Roanoke's music festival, so there are bands at the finish line. This will be a yearly event for me!

Best race experience ever!
This was truly the best race experience I've ever had. From the outstanding organization to the stunning course to the friendly volunteers to the amazing community support Blue Ridge is in a league all its own. I plan to make the BRM an annual event.

I love this race, in spite of the difficulty.
BRM is my favorite marathon. It's difficult, yet I crave the challenge and I love seeing my time improve year after year. A+ to the organizers. One suggestion, I would recommend giving a Finisher Hat to all finishers in the future.

Challenging, well supported event
'America's Toughest Road Marathon' was not easy, but the views made the climbs well worth the effort! Extremely well supplied and supported by happy and helpful volunteers. Roads were virtually empty of cars. The start and finish venue was excellent. Nice that this tied in with a music festival. Locals were quite welcoming. I'll be back!

This is the hardest, most fun marathon ever!
I saw the Blue Ridge Marathon advertised last year but I was scared away because of the mountains. After hearing others repeatedly say what a challenging but fun race this is, I was convinced I had to sign up. I am only a few days post-race and my only question is, When is the sign up for next year? I am from the flatlands so this was challenging, but I have a sense of accomplishment like no other race! I will be back!

Tough Course, Great Race Weekend.
Without a doubt the best all around race, From the expo to the entertainment on Friday - Saturday night. The amount of detail put into race weekend is by far the best I've seen. Race day went off like they have done it a hundred times. The course lived up to it name as it keep you climbing or flying down. The course was so supported by not only the organizer but the locals went above and beyond. I can't wait for 2017. Thank You!

Small town race, crowd support is always stellar! The views are incredible and the challenge of this race brought me back! Post race support equally amazing and the race director congratulated each and every runner. An organization that truly loves it's runners. Very personable and approachable.

VIP dinner was very yummy and allowed a very unique and descriptive preview of the race courses!! Weather was amazing!! Views from the higher elevations were outstanding!! Residents of Roanoke know how to keep runners motivated!! Best race crew ever because the race director gives awesome hugs!! Course markings were all on point and LOVED the blingy belt buckle medals!!!!

Challenging, Well Run, Very Rewarding
I've run Chicago, Boston, and Disney World and this marathon did not disappoint when compared to these. Their race day app was amazing, support was great, lots of gel / water stations, and the course was indeed 'america's hardest'. Be prepared for the downhills, they are harder than the uphills!

A beautiful challenge
Such a well organized race from packet pickup to finish line festivities. The course was lovely and clearly marked, lined with positive spectators, plenty of gorgeous views, lots of aid and water stations. Parking is easy and there is plenty to do in the immediate location when you're finished running and ravenous for good food. This race brings runners from many far away places, yet feels like a hometown event; and the expo/finish festival offer great swag for those brave enough to tackle the mountains. My only qualm is with the medal - would have loved to see a design that captured more of the uniqueness to this race.

Hold Crap!
Great Race that everyone has to experience. My only complaint is that lack of pizza at the end. Having pizza show up every thirty minutes is ridiculous. By time I realized there even was pizza and made my way back to the tent it was all gone.

I just finished my fifth Blue Ridge Marathon and it gets better every year! It is a tough course, but it is designed for runners all the way. VERY tough and challenging course.
This was my fifth marathon overall, but first Blue Ridge Marathon. As a native of Roanoke, I wanted to return, and knew it would be a terrific challenge. I was not disappointed. It was the hardest race I have yet done, but a beautiful course, and first rate organization. Now that I have done it, I would like to do it again with improved preparation and training.

The only thing I would comment on was there wasn't enough pizza for everyone. This was VERY minor in my book as I wouldn't have had any either way, I can't eat it after a race. This was an AWESOME race and I will be back. I ran the half.

Well organized race
This marathon was the perfect marathon. By the time I reached the finish line, I felt like I had just gotten off a roller coaster. The runners are there for a purpose and that is to race. The temperatures, the hills, the volunteers, the officers all made it an incredible race.

Amazing racing experience
I have run 7 marathons, 20+ half and countless sub 13.1 distance races in the past 6 years. By far this was the most challenging course ever. And this is the most well organized event as well, with plenty of hydration stops and availability of gu / bananas / oranges. There was a lot of good energy coming from the spectators and volunteers throughout the race. And there was more than enough enthusiastic volunteers around the whole time.

Challenging and friendly
I absolutely love this marathon, and it gets better every year. I have zero complaints about this race (though my quads might disagree). The race organization is flawless. Logistics are easy. The town and music festival are welcoming. The volunteers are beyond helpful, and also extremely friendly and supportive. The course is beautiful and challenging (which might be an understatement). Due to the tough course, I have never seen another race with such a sense of camaraderie and accomplishment. This race is quickly gaining momentum as an experience that attracts runners from around the country. This is not a typical marathon, and has become my annual favorite race.

Big mountain course, small town hospitality!!
The same way as there is no way to prepare yourself with this tough course, unless you live in Roanoke, there is also no way to prepare yourself for how nice this town is, unless you live there too. The 1000s of volunteers and spectators, to the scores of EMT and Police Officers that help made the 'toughest road marathon in America' feel like a walk in the park. So what if the park happens to be a very hilly Blue Ridge PARKway, the city's sunny southern hospitality made this 'Yankee' feel right at home.
I have run dozens of marathons in the east coast from VT to FL, and this marathon is definitely in my top 3.

one of the best
Having run over 90 ultras and 30ish marathons, I must say this was one of the most organized and fun event have participated in. Do yourself a favor and do not wear headphones: the volunteers, spectators and communities provide excellent cheering and music on their own. Very welcoming and fun.
Tough? Only because there are hills and it is a marathon. Everything else was fun & easy. (By the way, if you are like me and like hills & this distance, those are fun too).

Great first marathon experience
Coming from someone who is used to racing mostly 5k's and smaller events, the Blue Ridge Marathon was an incredible experience for me. I had never run a marathon before Saturday, but I'm so glad I chose this one as my first.
I placed second in the race and must say that one of my favorite things was being right behind the WDBJ7 lead vehicle for the first half when the eventual winner and I were still battling it out. It gave me a rush of adrenaline and made the race feel even more 'big-time' to have that kind of news coverage for the event.
I have nothing to compare it to since Blue Ridge was my first marathon, but I really did think the course was very well put together and challenging. Kudos to Pete and everyone else who worked many hours to make this race run as smoothly as it did. Only being in it's 6th year, the Blue Ridge Marathon seems to be a well-oiled machine.
My only small complaint is that around mile 22-23 there weren't many spectators around. I'm not sure if they just didn't really know about the race in that specific area or hadn't come out yet, but around Highland Avenue before you cross the bridge to run down to the greenway I was really feeling rough and could've used a little extra support. But like I said, maybe it was just me in 'no-man's land', and they came out after I had already passed by. Also, I heard a couple other runners talking about maybe re-organizing the aid stations more strategically over the last 5-6 miles or so, and I agree with that for the most part.
Overall, I thought the spectators were amazing. Other than my little nitpick, I felt an incredible sense of support throughout the race from the crowds, especially in South Roanoke going up Peakwood. Great stuff! Also, the aid stations were awesome in general as well. The GU around mile 20 probably saved my life.
Again, I wouldn't have wanted my first marathon experience to go any other way. Thanks to everyone who made the Blue Ridge Marathon a huge success and I look forward to the future of this race. Maybe I'll come back and try to win the overall title next year, pending a decision to run Boston or not. I'll definitely plan on running this race a few more times in my lifetime and will be excited to see how the event continues to grow.

A definite must run bucket list marathon!
This was my 5th marathon and 1st Blue Ridge Marathon. I've lived in Roanoke my whole life but it took me 5 years to get up the courage to attempt this race. I'm so glad that I did. Even though it got kind of hot....up to about 85 by the finish......it was a good challenge the entire time. I had trained well and on the course over the past few months which gave me an edge and I felt good. The water stops were well placed and the crowd support was pretty amazing, even on the greenway in places which I found surprising! There is no more elating of a feeling than crossing that finishline knowing you just ran America's toughest road marathon! And, I did it in my goal time of under 5 hours at 4:52!! I was really stoked! Highly recommended for marathoners who enjoy a good challenge, mad bragging rights, and a proud memorable race experience! :-)

One you'll wish you could do more than once a year
Runners can be gluttons for punishment, and the marketing of this race really feeds in to that. But don't be fooled you will enjoy every moment of this race, despite the continuous climbs and steep down hills. The scenery alone is worth the effort, but you get so much more from this race perfect organization, community involvement, incredible volunteers, great swag, wonderful location, more pre and post race events than you could hope to fit in, pride, and warm fuzzies that will linger for weeks afterward. Yes, the course is challenging, but not undoable with dedicated training, and the atmosphere is totally a one of camaraderie. Official volunteers as well as unofficial neighborhood volunteers and police managing traffic cheer you on and make you feel like an elite runner, encouraging you while eager to meet your every need (sprinklers, food, water, you name it). I've run Richmond twice, billed as America's friendliest marathon, but don't believe it the Blue Ridge far surpasses it. This race leaves you with a definite feel of accomplishment, as well, and great bragging rights. A week after running it for the second time, I feel like I could run it again this week, and the next, and the next...wish it was put on in the fall as well as the spring! You leave this race saying to yourself, 'This is why I run.'

Hardest race you'll ever love.
I thought this was a bucket lister - a race that I had to do once, just to say I did it. The difficulty of the course and the fact that I'd climb over 7,400 ft of elevation during the race had me thinking it would be a 'one and done' type of event. Instead, I've kept coming back to Roanoke! I've tackled the mountains three years in a row and fully intend to make it 4, 5, 6, 7... You get the idea! The race is very well organized and the staff are super friendly. The volunteers are second to none - it's always fantastic to see their enthusiasm. The crowds are amazing - Peakwood, I love you. It is my favorite race - this year sealed the deal for me. I've run over 30 marathons to include some international ones and Blue Ridge takes the cake.

Worth it!
Tough, tough course but awesome experience. Have done over 20 marathons and half-marathons all over the country. Roanoke had the best, quickest and easiest packet pickup. Took me longer to get out of the parking garage than to go thru the packet pickup process. Great race!

Great race, atmosphere, and scenery!
This was the fourth Blue Ridge race I have participated in, the second time running the full. This race is a challenge, the reputation of being America's toughest road marathon is spot on.
However, this is my favorite race year in and year out because of the organization, scenery, volunteers, and the fans. The mountains are worth the climb as the views are spectacular. The festival that follows with music, food, and drinks is very well done.
This is truly a bucket list marathon, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a challenge! Train hard but have fun!

This race is by far the most difficult marathon I have ever run, but it is definitely my favorite. I can't say enough positive things about this race. Challenging but rewarding course
The 2015 Blue Ridge Marathon was my sixth marathon and now stands as my favorite. As it is made perfectly clear, this course is not easy and is not a marathon people should run without training. With that being said, here is my assessment:
Pros:
1. Creative, challenging course
2. Beautiful scenery throughout the entire race
3. Amazing support throughout the entire race. I cannot emphasize enough how great the volunteers were and how much water, gu, food, etc. is provided throughout the race. It is by-far the most supportive race I have ever run.
4. Saturday morning packet pickup was available.
5. Race organization was perfect and the course was clearly marked.
Cons:
1. Although it was a minor cost, runners had to pay extra for pace alerts for family and friends.
2. Random discounts were provided throughout the year, making me question whether there was any advantage to registering early.
Those are the only two issues I identified. As you can see, all of the good things about it are what most runners actually care about. Kudos race organizers!
Honestly, this race was great. I highly recommend it.

27 1/2 hr MARATHON
Yes, I was the oldest marathon runner. Yes, I went down approaching Mile 25. Out of 73 marathons including the 50 states, Boston 4 times and Salt Lake City in July, I had never become dehydrated. The Jesus Saves Hill really did me in that Saturday. Last year, my time was 5:16 and this year I would have finished in 7:30.
I am not offering any excuses but I had a tumor removed from my bladder in February that was cancerous. I was in the middle of BCG chemical treatments when I got an infection and was put on high powered antibiotics. The bottom line is that I should not have run but it is such a great marathon that I did not want to miss it since I have run it from the beginning.
The good news is that I have finished the chemical treatments and my doctor has assured me that I have to find another way to leave this world. That Saturday, I thought it was going to be from running Blue Ridge.
The medics in the ambulance told me that I was finished for the day as they escorted me to a medical tent. However, they did not say I could not finish it the next day. A friend took me to the spot on Wasena Bridge where I went down and I finished the marathon Sunday morning at 11:00. The finish line was still standing and a friend took my picture.
I love this marathon and I really want to run it again in 2015. Thanks to Pete his committee, sponsors, fans Channel 7, and all those in the community that have made this marathon the success it is today.
To show you one example that this marathon has character. Before I asked, Pete had a finisher's medal in the mail to me after 27 1/2 hrs.
I met so many great runners that day. When I went down, a lady who had to be an angel stopped her car in the middle of Main Street on the bridge to hand someone a cold bottle of water to give to me before the medics arrived.
Yes, I will be eagerly training for the Foot Levelers Blue Ridge Marathon next year.

America's Toughest Road Marathon
Over the last year, this went from very cool local race to world class event. The new start/finish line and race organization were impeccable. The shirt and medal (belt buckle) are awesome. The volunteers were so fun and helpful. The community around this race, the social media team, and the crowd that runs it are all amazing. It is hard to believe this is only the 6th year for this race.
And there is the course itself. It is absolutely beautiful and brutal. As you would think, there are serious hills and mountains. You will NOT get a PR here, but you will get a sense of accomplishment. It starts and ends downtown Roanoke, but climbs some of the most beautiful mountains in the country. This race has everything.
If Boston is the holy grail for fast marathoners, this is the holy grail for crazy tough marathoners. This is my all-time favorite race. Thank you so much, Blue Ridge Marathon!

Challenging, beautiful and FUN!
I can't say enough wonderful things about this race! It is well organized, the course is extremely challenging, but the community and volunteers really come together to make it special (champagne toasts, a bagpiper on top of Roanoke Mountain, locals handing out candy and coffee and mimosas...)They did a great job creating excitement on social media. The medals, t-shirts and prizes were FANTASTIC, and the race pics, which came out phenomenal, were FREE! This is hands down my favorite marathon.

It is what they say it is.
No the expo isn't very large, no you don't get that much swag. But what do you get? Never mind that you get the tremendous challenge and beauty of this course; I was one of those crazy people who woke up in the middle of the night to run the course with a small group, just to finish in time to run the real thing. Understandably I was going quite slow for the actual race. Now I have run at least 25 other marathons, and many of the volunteers at those races have been good, but the Blue Ridge volunteers were in another class. As I walked through so many of the water stops, I was rooted on so enthusiastically that it was almost embarassing. I think the volunteers almost singlehandedly gave me the strength to finish the actual marathon. The townspeople were also incredible. That plus a race director who responds to questions immediately make this a must do race for anyone who is serious about marathons, but also amazingly enough would be a great first marathon for somebody who doesn't mind walking for parts of it and enjoying scenery.

Really hard, but rewarding race!
This was my 10th marathon, but first Blue Ridge. I was very impressed with the organization. There always seemed to be water/gatorade/food available when I needed it and there was a great party at the finish line. Between the gorgeous views, fun descents, and friendly neighborhoods this is one of my favorites and I will deifnitely be back! It was also BY FAR the hardest marathon I've run, but I trained for the mountains. If you train properly, you can really enjoy it, and it just makes the finish line that much more enjoyable.

The
I have run 44 marathons, including 2 BRMs, and this may be my favorite. This is a marathon for runners who want to put their physical AND MENTAL strengths to the test. It is clear that this race is planned and organized by people who know what marathoners want (at least those not seeking a PR). With the new course change and great finish area, I really don't think it can get any better. The uphills are exhausting and the downhills are painful but that's what you come here for so deal with it and enjoy the scenery.

challenging course with amazing views and support
The runs through Roanoke and Mill mountain were painful but picturesque. The dogwood trees were in peak bloom, so there were lots of fragrant breezes. Copious amounts of support, no need to carry water! The last mountain was Peakwood. Brutal climb, but lots of support. Some meandering through Roanoke with a few surprise climbs, and you make your way back home. One of the best finish line festivals so far. Craft beer, live music, fantastic food and free massages! To top it off, Roanoke is a great town. I definitely recommend this marathon. But be warned, you definitely EARN your medal!

Top-notch race... definitely worth a 5 hour drive!
This being the 5th 1/2 I've completed this year, I can honestly say that this is the BEST race, by far. My husband and I have run the race (either the 1/2 or the full) every year since it started and we continue to be amazed by the fact that it gets better and better each year. The 2014 1/2 course was definitely more challenging (and it was pretty damn challenging to begin with), but it was the best, from the organization to the ending in the park to the spectators... I mean, really... there was NOTHING that I could recommend for improvement. We always make a weekend of it, eating out, enjoying the music and atmosphere of this great city. Looking forward to 2015!

Great event overall...one for the bucket list!
This is a bucket list marathon for you. 7000 + feet of elevation change, three mountains, and southern hospitality. Course support is awesome and the locals really help along the way. Only detraction from the near perfect day was the lack of refreshments at the end. Only fruit and pop when I arrived. Was told there was more before I finished, just 'ran out'. More food in the 'runners tent' please!

Challenging, but worth it
I ran this marathon last year and again this year. The organizers decided to make the race a little tougher this year and succeeded not only in doing that, but also in making the whole race better. It is a challenge, but it is an AMAZING race. Organization is great, getting to the race is simple and parking is easy with all of the public parking available, water stops are welled staffed and stocked and are very frequent, the race swag is great, and the RD shaking everyones' hands at the finish is a touch you will only find here.

Great Event
I ran the half marathon and it was great. I've run a full and several halfs and the Blue Ridge half drew me in with its reputation. The course did not disappoint. The first hill was not quite as challenging as I had anticipated but it more than made up for it later in the course with the relentless hills. Great course and great organization. The full is on my must do list.

Fantastic race, but be prepared
I ran the half in 2013 and finished the full this past Saturday. It's a wonderful race, well organized with great local support. But take the tagline 'America's Toughest Road Marathon' seriously. The three big hills are challenging, but the smaller ones can get you, too. Still, I would recommend it to anyone looking for a challenging spring marathon. I plan to run it again and hope it continues to grow.

Amazing marathon
Great course, Great volunteers. This race gets better each and every year. I completed the half Marathon twice in the easy years, before the addition of Peakwood Dr. I ran the full marathon this year and enjoyed it. Next year I need to revisit the half to say that I have completed Americas most difficult road half marathon. It would be fun to try to have the 10 k on Saturday and the half and full on Sunday. I would do the 10k and the half or the full. The courses are great and the volunteers are full of energy.

Worth every up/down hill
Indeed the toughest road race I have run, including multiple ironman events! Gorgeous day, course and wonderful volunteers. Spectators we very supportive and friendly. The concert after was well worth the extra $. Roanoke is very nice...highly recommend host hotel, pay a little more and leave you car Friday and return to it Sunday!

Amazing Race!
This was my first year running the Blue Ridge (half) and I can't wait for the full marathon next year. The course was tough but beautiful and very interesting. The volunteers, residents, and spectators were phenomenal...seriously the most fun, supportive, and motivating group. The water/food/bathroom stops were extremely plentiful and awesome...and the unofficial support stops by local businesses and residents were great. I've done a lot of half and full marathons and this race has been my favorite...I can't wait for 2015! Thanks to the race organizers for a wonderful event and to Roanoke...I enjoyed visiting the city and local establishments as well. Congrats runners!

She'll be coming round the mountain
This race is other-worldly. It is every bit as beautiful as it is brutal, and it is replete with scenic vistas that capture your heart as quickly as they offer a brief reprieve from the travails of the day. i was floored by the crowds, the aid stations, the wonderfully patient southern drawl of the elderly woman working the table at the top of Roanoke Mountain, as though she wanted to hold on to each word just a moment longer before she let it go; this race was so 'Roanoke' and so very 'Virginia.'

A Unique Marathon Experience
I'm about 95% trail runner but have always wanted to do this race because of the challenge and eventness that is the Blue Ridge Marathon. I was finally able to schedule it this year and my experience was completely positive. It is amazing to me the organization that goes into this race to ensure that the most challenging road elevations are a part of it. No small feat. And the race itself is well managed with lots of support and community involvement. I think that is what made it so fun for me. You just don't experience that kind of community support in a trail race, and it really was special. The race itself is completely challenging. I've never done a flat marathon before so I really don't have anything to compare it to, but needless to say with the elevation changes in the BRM it takes everything you've got to get through. I have to say that I loved finishing the race in Roanoke's new outdoor amphitheater plaza. Plenty of end of race support, beer and food, and music. It was very festive. While I was training for it I figured this would be a one and done thing for me, back to the trails. But, after such a great race experience I think I'll be back next year if at all possible.

Awesome race
I live in Roanoke. I train in the course all the time. It never amazes me how tough and beautiful it is. This is the only road race that I do. It is a hug challenge. You cannot underestimate the course. The last 5 miles are no joke, either. The organization and everything has been perfect.

This race is a memory-maker!
Some races are just races - you go and run and get your time and your done. Not this one. There is so much enthusiasm from the time you sign up and begin getting updates until well after you cross the finish line. The course is scenic at every step, from inner city to wooded mountain top. The support from organizers, volunteers, the community, and fire/police/rescue is continuous and ever-present. I lost track of how many high fives, posters, and words of encouragement I met over the 26.2 miles. The race organizers really go out of their way to anticipate all your needs and all those little extras that will make the race a worry-free and enjoyable run. Best of all, this is a challenging race, and no matter what your finish time, you have bragging rights for surviving it!

Brilliant
Roanoke in late April is simply stunning; it was like running in a postcard. The locals - including the police force and all volunteers - were really terrific; thank you! This was a bit of a crazy one to take on for a second marathon but I made it through and can't wait to do it again next year.

Challenging race with awesome volunteers!
The toughest marathon in America by far - but great course, gorgeous views, friendly runners, the BEST volunteers and a real sense of community in the organization, administration, and execution. While I'm not sure my knees can even handle those mountains again, I wish all the marathons I run are as friendly and down-to-earth as this one.

The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly...
Now that I have come out of my daze a bit from the Blue Ridge Marathon ...... The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly..... What a gorgeous day! Donna Nixon said it well.... The day was a blessing. The first eight miles for me were extremely beautiful and peaceful as far as the scenery goes. Extraordinary views. It is an odd feeling to feel like you have already done a half marathon only to see the 3 mile marker coming at you. The course is UP. I am not sure what was up with the race crews and volunteers. They all LIED. I think everyone of them said, 'This is the last hill.' Ummm...no... There really was no last hill until the finish. I have no way of expressing how beautiful it was. You will just have to do it for yourself. Although I decided to do the full literally the day before....I felt pretty good and never thought about quitting. I realized after a few (lies) that I was going to continue to see hills so I just accepted it. The aid stations were frequent and the volunteers and everyone were great. I swear though....there was one aid station that must have ran out of water and started dipping it from their swimming pool. That water was NASTY! To make it worse....I contaminated my only water bottle with it so I couldn't drink until the next aid station. If I were a drinker the 'Moo Mosa' and Champagne/Beer stations would have been a welcome sight. I found myself calculating (when) I could stop running and just walk the rest. I miscalculated a little bit, but it turned out ok. You shouldn't try to do math when your brain doesn't work right and you are cross-eyed.
All-in-all....a very well done event. Beautiful and deserving of the 'America's Toughest Road Marathon' phrase until somebody can knock it off the top. I tip my hat to the strong folks that finish it fast and strong and I don't forget the Ultra-Runner's and Double Marathoner's who make it seem like a walk in the park.

SIGN ME UP FOR 2014
Having run 70 marathons, this is near the top of my favorite marathons. I thought I was doing fine until a lady runner who had completed Boston on Monday, ran the course at 2:30 AM passed me during the regular marathon. I am already eager to run it in 2014 for my 5th year.

This is a very challenging, fun course with spectacular views from the top of the mountain. The volunteers and organization of the race were great. First half marathon had the best experience ever
This was my first half marathon, I have to say I did not train for it I am not a runner that runs everyday, I work out alot cardio and weights. I ran 3 miles 4 weeks before the event I did not train for it I don't recomend doing the race with out traning like I did It is a hard race.I had so much fun the staff was wounderful to work with the runners were so nice and incouraged me when they would pass me.I had the best time it was hard I will say that I even finished with a time I was proud of sence I did not train for it. I will do this race again because the people were so nice and I have never seen so much help and incouragement in a sport as I did this marathon. I have started running this race gave me a passion to do so. Thank you all I loved the race for my first half marathon I picked Americas Toughest Road Course I am glad I did it was a wounderful experience.

Very Tough, Very Scenic and Very Worthwhile
This is a TOUGH course with three major climbs and multiple smaller climbs, but it was worthwhile. The scenery is gorgeous with mountain views of blooming dogwood and redbud trees. The race organization is excellent and the spectators are enthusiastic. This race course is challenging but it was worth the extra effort to reach the finish line. I want to thank the RD, staff, volunteers and spectators for making this a great race.

I loved the half marathon course - challenging but not killer. I could enjoy a beautiful spring day and the scenic route while running one of my best 13.1 races. Tackling the mountain first made the rest of the race enjoyable. Everything was incredibly organized, especially post race events.

Top Notch - Must Do!
As all have gathered by now the course is quite the challenge but well worth it! Views are amazing, support along the course and aid stations are outstanding. Neighbors in residential areas very supportive and fun, thanks for the frozen grapes. Volunteers are awesome as are those proving traffic control and security for all. The Race Director is there greeting every runner and that says more than words. Roanoke is a great place to relax after the race, lots of community spirit. This is a must do race, you won't regret it. Just know its a challenge.

An outstanding event in all respects.
This was my first time experiencing the Blue Ridge Marathon actually the half-marathon. Being a Florida flatlander, I anticipated the climbs and descents with some trepidation. The trepidation was justified, but so what? I can do a flat half-marathon anytime. I wanted a harder test, and that is what I got, and no regrets. Besides, the scenery was worth the effort! I'm now a big fan of the event, and have begun to toy with the idea of doing the 26.2 next year. I thought the race was wonderfully organized from the packet pick-up through the pre-race dinner to the start to the finish. Loved the quick unofficial results being posted near the finish. Great aid stations, enthusiastic, clear about what they were offering. Powerful emotional lift from the three speakers Friday night. Great job, folks!

It is a wonderful race with great scenes & people
It is a challenging race that will test your limits but give you a great race experience. I have lived in Roanoke/Salem all my life and its it really nice small city that puts on a one of a kinda Marathon. The challenge of the ups and downs of the 2 mountains, plus the added ending of another hilly climb makes for a one of a kind race. I have run it 3 times now and will again next year.

Beauty and the Beast
This race sold itself on the level of difficulty and the beauty of the course. Marathon promoters often overstate the virtue of their races and understate the drawbacks. This race lives up the hype. The course was indeed difficult but still very enjoyable if prepared for properly. I would rate as the toughest, but also most enjoyable marathon I have run. The vistas were breathtaking and added much motivation on the climbs. Roanoke was a great host city. The expo, registration, dinner, pre-race, on-course support and post-race activities are all A+. An extremely organized and well-executed event. The RD is super-high energy and congratulated all finishers. Class act. The Legends dinner was a once in a lifetime thrill for marathoners. It was great to hear from people who defined this sport for so much of recent history. If you are looking for a marathon that is unlike the others, pick this one! The medal could not be improved upon, great ribbon and medallion. The specatators were sparse on Roanoke and Mill Mountains, which is fine, added to the serenity of the run. However, I will note that one kind lady offered a mimosa at her mountainside mansion,(Thanks for that!). The spectators on Peakwood and through the rest of the course were great. Only thing I would change with the swag is to somehow incorporate the course profile on the front of the shirt. However, it was on the back in the logo. Sign up for this and head for the mountains!

A Must Do Race!!
I can't begin to explain how amazing this marathon was. This capped off my marathon season and I had an absolute blast. The course was amazing and the spectators though sparse in some areas were fantastic. They were so enthusiastic in the Aid stations that it was like a noise tunnel that relay gave you an extra boost. I have to give it to the organizers because this was one of the most well run races I've ever been in. Their efforts to honor Boston were also greatly appreciated as well. All in all, if you are thinking about running this race, stop thinking and sign up. You will not regret it!

Amazing, Beautiful, Tough Marathon
This was an absolutely flawless race. The organization was beyond expectations, the course is beautiful and challenging, and the crowd was fun. I think this could be an iconic marathon. Boston is the gold standard for speedy marathoners, this should be the gold standard for tough marathoners. Here are my highlights:
- The security and organization was impeccable. A great response, considering what happened in Boston just days earlier.
- The course is beautiful! Since this isn't a course you will get a PR, I recommend carrying a camera and enjoying the amazing views.
- This is a challenge. It is very helpful training on these mountains, if possible. If you are from far away, try driving the course the day before so you know what you are in for.
- Peakwood was so absurdly challenging, I could only laugh at it. After the first 16 tough miles, Peakwood was just evil (and I mean that in the best possible way).
- I have never seen so many water/gu stops and porta-potties on a marathon course!
- The spectators were rather sparse, but incredibly friendly and encouraging.
- I very much enjoyed shaking the race director's hand as I crossed the finish line.
- Great tee shirt and medal. I love the 'America's Toughest Road Marathon' tagline.
- My only suggestion for the race would be (and not to sound like a snob), to do something a little different for the full marathoners. In this particular race, the full marathon is SO MUCH harder than the half.
- I ran this as a 'bucket list' marathon, something to do once. But I will absolutely be back next year.

Difficult but top-notch race.
The Blue Ridge Half-Marathon was my first race but it was an incredible one to be a part of. The course was very unpredictable and challenging which made it a lot of fun. There were a lot of spectators out to show support. The post race activities were great. I have nothing but good things to say.

Bucket list race
I did the marathon relay which was spectacular and I'm going to go back next year to run the marathon. The course is very challenging but the views are worth it. The organization is outstanding. While there aren't too many spectators on the mountainous portions, the ones that were there made sure they cheered for every runner. I didn't run the Peakwood portion of the race but my teammate said that the spectators there were incredible - even had set up unofficial beers stops! The shirts were great and I love that they offer ladies' cut. The medals are beautiful. The finish line area offered water, fruit, and pizza. There was a music festival on the same day so there were also beer and bands. My boyfriend and I spent a few days in Roanoke - the locals are super friendly and supportive of the race. Even though this race will kick your butt, it's a must do!

As good as Richmond, but a different Marathon.
Amazing Marathon IMO. I've run Richmond Twice and thought it was great. The Roanoke Blue Ridge Marathon has the same great feel and fan support but offers a different more challenging run. It's small which makes it easier to access. However, it's big enough that your never alone and makes for a fun, scenic, and unforgettable experience. As A Roanoker living in Hampton roads this is my new favorite race. I highly reccomend it.

Best race that I have run!!! Aid stations were great and you didn't know what to expect at the next one. Absolutely loved the cow in the road, gorilla, getting laid at station 17, and the funeral home sign! Wished the crowd would have been a little more rowdy at the finish line.

'Running through a postcard!'
Even though I live in this city, running through it on this course puts this mountain town in a whole new light. Be ready for tough climbs and even tougher descents, but the views are so worth it! The spectators go above and beyond, and many of the neighborhoods even hosted block parties with refreshments and music for the runners as we passed. Finally the aid stations were phenomenal, completely stocked with everything you could need or want. I carried a pack this year, but I know now that I don't have to next time! There was so much water, Gatorade, snacks, and GU on the course that I even skipped a few stops because I couldn't consume that much! Could not have been better organized, everything about this race was flawless.

an absolutely awesome experience for me!
Well the day started out rocky. Set clock for 5pm instead of 5am and by the grace of god I woke up at 5:05! a.m. of course-lol. Then knicked both ankles with a razor that I never cut myself with! Then walking to race .75 miles from course, twisted foot twice... it all got better from there:) saw Bart & Frank at coffee shop for photo op :) then saw Pam Rickard for first time since Boston when she came in from first run :) then I did 1/2 in 2:47:28 after a goal of 3:15 :) couldnt of done that fast w/o hubby as pacer :) ALL & ALL AN AWESOME DAY-THANK YOU! (to clarify - where it says ran in BR marathon-I ran the BR HALF marathon 2013 and 1 other half marathon & 1 full marathon & 3 ultras)

A true marathon.
A very tough course with great views and plenty of spectator support. The true definition of a marathon. The mountains push you to your limit three times. The Peakwood drive section has many spectators that cheer every runner that comes by. That may be the toughest part of the course and all of the spectators really help you to keep going. After the grueling hills you see the mile 22 sign and there's no way you can give up now. I wouldn't change any part of this race.

Incredible experience!
This was my first half marathon, and I don't think I could have chosen a better one. The organization was top notch, nothing was left to chance and they kept runners updated right up until the day of the race. The course was beautiful and varied, with lots of uphills and downhills, flats, and picturesque views up the mountain, down the mountain, and through neighborhoods, parks, and the downtown areas. The entire community, not just the race organizers make you feel so welcome and are so encouraging - I was amazed at the volunteers and community who came out to cheer us on along the entire course. There were more than enough water stations and pit stops, well placed. The police presence was strong, but in no way dampened the race. Kudos to the officers who maintained security and directed traffic, they truly made the runners their top priority. The finish line was a celebration, with Fleet Feet sports providing lots of great food and drinks for recovery, massages and foam rollers to imediately address any aches or pains. I love the finishers medal, it is beautiful and of high quality. Overall, a great race, and as tired as my legs are a day after finishing it, I am ready to do it again!

My 1st Half was the Blue Ridge Marathon!
Obviously I don't have anything to compare this course to as it was my first, but I decided to take on the toughest so that every other race would seem easy. The pasta dinner was amazing, the guest speakers were inspiring and gave me more of a sense of purpose for being there. The course was very difficult, I'm enlisted Active Duty in the Army, and throughout all of my training this was so much harder than anything I have been put through so far. The volunteers were amazing and the crowd was very motivating and helped to get through to each mile. The outpour of love for running and the tragedy of the Boston Marathon was overwhelming, it really made me feel like I was part of a very compassionate and loving community. I look forward to my next race wherever that may be :)

Awesome marathon.Words can't capture the beauty
2013 was my third years running it. Great crowd, great organization, and spectacular course. I am from Roanoke, and it still catches my breath each time I run the course. I improved my time by 13 minutes this year. Beautiful weather, with the colors of Dog Wood trees and Red Bud trees along with all the shades of greens over these beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains was just 'awesome.' As we all know, running a marathon is about the experience of running. You can't beat spending a weekend in Roanoke and running these beautiful mountains. Hopefully, I can continue to do this race for the next 20 years.
This year we had 1,700 runners. This race has grown from 300 runners to 1,700 in 3 years. Great turn out and everyone wore shirts, caps, or wrist bands supporting the Boston tragedy. Hats off to the organizers for supporting Boston on such a short notice, and thanks to all the runners for their support. Tragedy has brought us all closer together. Go runners all around the world.
Love this race and hope it continues to be the 'star' race of all the marathon races in the United States. I have raced in Singapore, Toronto Canada, Nashville, Baltimore, Philadelphia, etc, and this is still my favorite. Please come and run with us.

Sign me up for next year!
We have run this race every year since it's inauguration, and yesterday STILL managed to top expectations. Race staff, volunteers, police support, -the PEOPLE of this race are without parallel in their happy, energetic dedication to the runners. Many thanks to each and every one!
The mountainous course is unrelenting, but rewards your efforts with glorious views, lovely neighborhoods and local residents that come out in droves to cheer, feed and make us feel welcome.
Finish line is festive and well-stocked with food and drink and the only race we run with CHOCOLATE MILK! Don't ever stop the chocolate milk!
Run this race!

Great Half Marathon
Overall a great, well-run half. Plenty of well-stocked aid stations, decent spectator support, and a gorgeous but challenging course. The course is difficult, but if you train for it, it isn't unmanageable. My only complaint was that the finish area didn't really seem ready for the half marathon finishers. Food was there, but massages, music, etc. weren't. I waited around for a while, but it didn't seem like it was going to happen any time soon. The event is definitely geared towards the full marathon runners, but I'd still highly recommend it as a half.

Tough
To categorize this marathon as difficult is the epitome of understatement. The challenges it offers are difficult and continuous ... which makes its completion all the sweeter.

Roanoke, you are the Greatest!
Thanks to the spectators, neighbors, children, fans, police, fire, and EMS personnel on the ground at the Blue Ridge Marathon today. Roanoke is one of the greatest places in the World to run. If I took something from everyplace someone offered, I would have gained 5 pounds and not needed to eat for a week. This race belongs to Roanoke and her people, with Landmarks proudly and beautifully displayed. The crowds gave me love, power, joy, strength, and some awesome frozen grapes at mile 20 when the collective downhill weighed on my IT bands. Thanks for all the high fives, I collected a little over 1,000 and only scared 3 people, this demonstrates that we are not victims of fear. My first Marathon, appropriately America's hardest road version, no longer the Green Manaleshi with the Two Prong Crown.(except Peakwood) Blue Ridge Marathon 2013 is now a good memory of how thousands of people helped one person achieve his worthy goal.

Awesome Marathon!
This marathon is a must-do for every marathoner. The course is extremely difficult (many hills are steep) but is equally beautiful. I took my camera!
The organization is top notch. I was very surprised all that was available along the course for runners. The usual water/gatorade/gel but also lots of candy, fruit, etc. for those who like having these items available.
I ran the full and my sister ran the half. The half marathon runners are also treated very well.
Spectators were awesome...LOTS of neighborhood support. Roanoke really comes out for this race.
Race shirt and medal for both full and half marathoners were great!
My name and hometown were announced on my finish and the race director shook my hand! Actually, the race director had a video online talking about the race and that was one of the reasons I ran it!
Run the Blue Ridge...you will NOT be sorry!

Bucket List Marathon!
If there is one marathon I am glad I did before I died it was Blue Ridge. The hills(mountains)are no joke, but are worth the climb to the breath-taking views. The spectators were hugely supportive. I was impressed with the numerous tables of goodies set aside for runners at the end of driveways as we made our way through beautiful neighborhoods (miles 16-21).
I highly recommend training properly for this race. I focused on steep hills for my long runs (your legs need to get used to the ups and downs), in combination with plyometrics, core and leg strengthening. The result was an awesome medal and award for first place in my division.
This is a small scale race with only 300 full marathoners. The runners made conversation as we made our way up the mountains. I arrived at the start an hour before the race to find no evidence of a start line. There was a concession stand to purchace water and breakfast and a total of 10 porta potties. I gave the race a 4 for organization because I felt the start could have been more organized and should have free water for runners. The finish also required a license and $5 to get a beer, neither of which a runner typically carries.
Roanoke is a beautiful city with many ameneties to enjoy while you visit.

Beautiful tough course wtih top notch organization
The Course: Gorgeous. The first half is mostly on the parkway. It's quiet, little spectators but beautiful views and mostly closed off to traffic.
The second half gets you in the neighborhoods of Roanoke with a little more spectators (not too many until the finish line) and a section on the Greenway.
Mountain or hills training is a necessity.
Organization: Top Notch. Great logistics and amenities. Plenty of aid stations with great volunteers, food and drink for every one. Each with porta potties. Course was easy to follow and police did a great job with the traffic.
Finish line food and massage were great.
Finisher's medal and awards are beautiful. The race is still small, I expect that will change, but it's a good way to place in age groups.
Could have done with women size shirts (they said they will in 2013).
I will do it again. Oh yes and first marathon for me but with the right training and no fear of walking, it's totally doable.

Excellent, challenging race
I don't know if this is really America's Toughest, but it is most certainly one tough marathon. I took a walk-run approach on the uphills, but there's no getting away from the pounding you get on the downhills. When it finally flattens out at mile 21, it's just a fight to hang on to the finish.
Beautiful course, weather was nearly perfect, and there were fans even on the isolated parts of the course. Great to see the whole community get behind this race.

Third year and counting
I've run this race every year so far...I hope I can still say that in 10 years or more. Love the course, love the spectators and volunteers. So well-organized and tons of support. This was my 7th marathon and I took 10 minutes off last year's time. But, as I say every year, what's up with the shirts? My medium is HUGE! Love the design this year - just wish I could actually wear it to advertise the race.

Running uphill over and over and over
I enjoyed everything I did to train and race in this marathon. It was my first marathon. I was fine until the sun burnt through the cloud cover and the temperature spiked beyond the forecast by 8-10 degrees. I was not ready for that, at all.
The course was incredibly challenging, but beautiful and fun. The two starting mountains are difficult, but Peakwood Dr. (mile 17) is the killer because of the long gentle hill before it (Avenham Ave.) The hills are steep up and down.
I do not recommend this for a first-timer. I did it, but I grew up in Roanoke and was aware of the course. I trained for over a year on hills in Louisville, but a steep 2 mile climb is hard to train for in the mid-west.
The expo was a little sparse and weak, but the run makes up for it. I did suffer heat exhaustion and was cared for well. The stations were spaced well along the course and there was at least a couple trained medical people traveling the course between stations.
I will run it again despite my wife's protests.

Great Race, Nice Surprise
I was so disappointed to have to pull out of Boston this year after training hard to be ready for heartbreak. Then, I discovered this race close by and only one week later. It was a great challenge for even the fittest and I had an awesome experience. Even got a laugh out of the spectators going up hills around mile 18 with a Tour de France comment. Had a wonderful experience running on the parkway and to have Bill Rodgers supporting the race was extra special! With the shake of his hand in the awards, I told him it was much tougher than Boston and I think he agreed. Thanks to all of the volunteers who really took care of us during and after the race. Job well done!

Great Race, Great Town, Great Weekend
I just completed the Blue Ridge Marathon for the second time. It's not just a uniquely beautiful and challenging race course, its held in the charming town of Roanoke in conjunction with a music festival (Down by Downtown) and the Roanoke Twilight Criterium (bike) races. I had such a great time in 2011 despite the rainy and windy conditions during race that year, that I made it a point to sign up again this year. This year I was rewarded with beautiful weather and breathtaking views from the top of Roanoke and Mill Mountains. So sign up, train hard, and bring your family and/or friends to Roanoke next year for a great weekend.

AMAZING!!
I simply cannot put into words how awesome this race is and what a GREAT experience it has been the past two years! Love the city of Roanoke, race is VERY well organized, volunteers and race coordinators are super friendly, and all the runners seem to be out there just having a fun time despite the challenging course. Aid stations are well stocked and well placed (I don't think we go more than 1.5mi without an aid station in the full). The spectators are super and stay out there cheering until the last runner comes home. The race director is very passionate about this event and shakes EVERYONE'S hand as they come across the finish line. The finish line festival and weekend activities in downtown Roanoke were great!! Overall a fun, FUN race in a beautiful area! The course is very challenging, but absolutely worth every mile!!

This is a TOUGH race but a wonderful one!
The hardest of all my 112 marathons and ultras. Lots and lots of long and neverending mountains but we were rewarded with beautiful vistas, wonderful people, great volunteers, and terrific organization. Cannot find fault with anything, really, plus we had wonderful weather as well. Not for the faint of heart but great for those wanting a challenge. Unique awards (railroad ties made into the shapes of runners)for age group winners.

Very well organized race!
I ran the Blue Ridge Mountain 1/2 Marathon this past weekend and was blown away at how smoothly the whole event was organized. Water stops were well equipped with essentials like orange slices, pretzels and bananas and of course water and aid to drink. Volunteers and spectators by the dozen were there to cheer all runners on with lots of enthusiasm. Can't wait to sign up for this event again next year! If you like hills well BRM has hills on steriods to run!!!

Best Race Ever
I have run this race every year, including the last two years as a double marathon. This is, by far, my favorite race that I've ever run and it's been added to my annual calendar with a permanent marker. The course is beautiful and challenging, the people of Roanoke are super friendly and accommodating, and the race organizers are cruel and evil (in a good way). I'm already recruiting other runners from Michigan to join me in 2013!

Amazing First Half Marathon Experience
This was my first race I've ever entered and it was truly a great experience. My husband and I originally signed up for it because we wanted to run a half marathon and it was a half way point for another couple that did it with us.. boy, we did not know what we were getting into with that elevation! But we all finished proud of our first time! We had an amazing time and I must say the volunteers & police officers were so supportive and motivating along the route. The spectators were also incredible! The course was gorgeous, we always knew where we going, and plenty of water stations! We enjoyed every bit of it.. even though we are all so sore today!!

Best race in the country!
Wow. This is a very special race. I'm still a novice runner, but I've run races all along the east coast. This was the best of all of them all by a mile (well, by 13!). From the enthusiastic encouragement of many fans along the course, the knowledgeable volunteers, the ridiculously beautiful and scenic course and wonderful race festivities...everything was top notch. I live in the suburbs of Philadelphia and despite the 6 hour drive this is my 'can't miss' race. I will be there next year and hopefully for many years to come.

Stunning course and supportive volunteers
Incredibly beautiful course. Hilly, yes, but worth it.
The spectators were incredibly enthusiastic.
Race day packet pickup is a big plus.
Plenty of portopotties at the start and along the course. Aid stations were comprehensive, almost ultra style.
At the price paid, wish there was a technical t-shirt. (I am fine with no t-shirt even, if you don't pay the same as for a high quality shirt!) Even that wouldn't have been so bad if they hadn't been out of the small shirt I had ordered.
Like the bumper sticker- would have paid for a magnet upgrade for such a great course.
Would run again.

Best race I've run.
Beautiful course, amazing views, challenging every step of the way! Incredible organization and volunteer support - never felt more helped along the way - and the spectators, for a small town, were amazing. Probably had fruit from someone's garage four different times, and many people out enjoying the weather and encouraging every runner that went by. This is my 7th marathon and I actually PR'd, which I credit the support with. Amazing experience all around.

My First Half Marathon!
One word...AMAZING!! Amazing course, Amazing Organizers, Amazing Volunteers...all made for an Amazing Experience for me as I finished my First Half Marathon. Yes, I chose quite a tough one to tackle, but if it hadn't been for all the hard work the organizers and volunteers put in - it would have been much tougher. Everyone should run this course & there is no shame in walking - it really was the best strategy! Thanks again for an amazing day!!

Great atmosphere and coordination!
This is truly a fabulous race. For being in such a small place, you really feel like the whole town comes out to cheer you on (I think they do, actually). It is very well organized and is better resourced (water, gels, snacks) than some of the very large races I've done. The mountains are brutal, but the scenery can't be beat. Definitely do this one.

Exceeds the hype as America's Toughest Marathon!
This is the best organized, well run, and challenging course you will ever run. The volunteers and spectators were simply amazing. The mountains are beautifully brutal, as are the screaming descents. The aid stations had everything you could want - bananas, oranges, pretzels, gummi bears, and the best support staff you can find. The post race drinks and food were plentiful and the live music just put it over the top. It was a beautiful day and the best experience. I will be back next year and am bringing a large group of friends to enjoy this wonderful marathon.

very well organized, Great staff and volunteers!
I'm 53 yrs old and ran the Blue Ridge 1/2 marathon last year. It was my first race of any kind in my life!!! I loved the excitement of the crowd and the atmosphere of the event! So I ran the 1/2 marathon again this year and was 6 minutes faster than last time so I was very happy..... my goal was to finish the race at least as fast as my last run. It was a great race! I don't have much experience at these type events but I can say without a doubt that this race is VERY well organized. The course is wonderful and the staff nad volunteers are absolutely fantastic. I plan on being there again and again as long as my old Grandpa Butt can make the run!!!

A one-of-a-kind destination race
I ran the half marathon, and have nothing but good things to say about this race and the organizers. It's just the right size - not too big, not too small. The hills were a huge challenge but not impossible. The course was incredibly well supported and the volunteers with enthusiastic. The scenery was beautiful. I need to come back again to challenge myself to the marathon.

Push you to your limit!
This was my first half-marathon. What made me do this one? It was on home territory. Was I crazy? Yes! This course is tough and beautiful in one package. But the support of fellow racers, volunteers and spectators was unbelievable! Every step of the way was encouragement, water, energy drinks and port-a-potties! The feeling of accomplishment to finish this course was beyond comparison!

Amazing All Around
I cannot stop reflecting on my experience from yesterday. It was just awesome. I do not agree with the person who said it isn't as hard as they say! It was tough. Physically and mentally, but it was BEAUTIFUL. The only part I didn't like was that it was 26 miles long. Ha. :) Great course, great spectators, excellent volunteers. I loved it.

The views are worth it
This was second time I've run Roanoke. 2011 was a wet foggy blur...2012 was beautiful with temps in the 60s (rising a bit too high for me by the 4 hour mark), partly cludy skies, dry conditions, and long mountain valley views.
This race is tough, very tough: the climbs are unlike anything you have experienced. But as others have said, just approach Roanoke with a different mindset and it can be done. I stuck to 10min pace and I was militant about sticking to that as my baseline, for the steeper sections I was down to a crawl but still running. I was thrilled to keep running throughout the entire course, past mile 20 and to mile 22 before I started walking the water stops and then alternating 1 min walk breaks.
This is a small marathon with excellent and very friendly organizers. No expo just a small packet pickup. Plenty of aid stations on course with no shortages of fluid and snacks. Lots of open porta johns along the way.
This is a quiet run, not too many people out but the neighboorhood on Mile 16-20 has some very enthusiastic people out.
Roanoke: A wonderful little city, clean, charming, easily navigated. I will be back for year 3.

Toughest Marathon I have ever run
I did this run last year to prepare for Grandfather Mountain Marathon, but as it turned out, this race makes Grandfather Mountain look easy. The addition of the extra mountain climb at mile 18 and the wind and rain made this year's event one to remember. Best course volunteers I have ever been around. All marathoners should experience this event!

awesome race!!!!!!
LOVE the town.. so clean & people are so so nice, LOVE the course.. 'the best' get tired of flat & boring route 4 kenya, ethiopia runners. switch 2 trails race then back to road race 4 this event, so the course is tough but doable if trained right. ran Great Wall of China Marathon in '08 plus coming from California.. we have plenty of hills plus i've trained harder than this so can't claimed this is toughest road marathon YET!!! run Mt. Lemmon next then will decide

Not as tough as they say it is
I've completed this marathon twice, each time in under 4 hours. And I don't even know what my VO2 max is! You don't have to be a training freak to do this one. It's tough, but not as tough as they make it sound. Come on and sign up! See for yourselves.

Fun, challenging, very well organized event
How do I even begin? This event rocked; it may be smaller-sized, but it was one fo the best-organized events I have run to date. The staff, and volunteers, are what make this race so successful. The course rocked also; I love the challenging climbs, and screaming downhills. I'll be back to do this one again. Great work and see you in 2012.

PROUD TO BE A ROANOKER
The organization, volunteers, and the course design all makes me proud to live in Roanoke. I am proud to have run this marathon for two years. It is a difficult course; however, for me the Grizzly in Montana and the Marathon of Wild Horses in Green River, WY are more difficult.
If you would like a positive marathon running experience, you should consider this one in 2012.

TOUGH course + ungodly rain = 5 stars
I have run in 2 marathons and 8 halfs, and heard a lot of griping about ticky tack things. Even though the weather was so bad it was funny, I have not heard one complaint about this race! Blue Ridge is hands down the best race I have been in! I ran it both last year and this year (perfect weather and not so perfect weather) and have to say that all the positive comments are well deserved. This is a must-run race!

A very difficult, challenging, well run race.
Marathon #97 and Blue ridge #2. A great course despite the 3 mountains. Gives the runner a great deal of satisfaction at the end. Good aid stations, enthusiastic volunteers, beautiful scenery, well organized, lots of liquid (not rain) and plenty of GU and munchies. Great effort in the rain by both volunteers and runners. Will return again next year.

Up, Down, Up, Down, Up, Down, then Rollers
Awesome run! I loved everything about the event but my quads aren't as happy.
+ Tough course. Very challenging. You finally come off the last hill and hit more up and down rollers.
+ Great organization. Awesome volunteers. Well stocked aid stations. Well policed roads. Can't say thanks enough.
+ Roanoke is really nice. What's in the water that makes everyone so nice? Enjoyed the long drive through Virgina.
+ Perfect weather. (wink) Made it more of an accomplishment.
+ I know for a fact which marathon is toughest road marathon in the world.
After only 2 years, this is a model for other marathons. THANKS TO ALL!

Awesome race.
The Blue Ridge Marathon is a must-do race if a scenic, challenging course is what you are looking for. The course is scenic as well as brutal. There are three major climbs during this race that will have your calves and lungs begging for mercy, and the downhill sections will punish your quads and the soles of your feet to even out the abuse.
The 2011 race was well organized and, despite the wet weather this year, the volunteers were plentiful, upbeat and cheerful. The entire course had police at the intersections and volunteers at almost every turn (markers too). The aid stations were abundant and supplied with ample water, Heed and porta-potties. Crowd support on the mountain sections is limited by the nature of the course, and I'm sure this year the rain kept the crowd support down in the residential areas. The race expo was small, but that is sure to change as the event grows in popularity.
There is plenty to do and see in Roanoke before and after the race. Hotel rates were reasonable, with plenty of choices within a mile or two of the start.

Add this to your Must-Do list!

Intense, brutal, inspirational
That was an incredibly well done marathon - especially considering the weather conditions. The first 15 miles are extremely challenging, but remember, what goes up must come down, so there are lots of downhills to navigate with the ups. The final 20 miles trended down and made for the best final 20 I've ever had. So much fun! Yet so hard!

Brutal, but well-organized race.
Despite the rain and wind, the course was beautiful. It had the most aid stations I've ever seen at a race. The gummy bears made me happy. :) Plenty of bathrooms and a very well marked course. The climbs were brutal but it's called the toughest road marathon - it's not like we didn't know what we were in for. Awesome volunteers and spectators - especially the group of ladies who stayed in the rain all day cheering us on. I must have seen them at least 5-6 times and it really helped my mood! Met some cool people and overall had a great experience. I'll be back.

Most awesome marathon
This is my 4th marathon for the year, and my experience was great. This marathon was well organized, and the course was so beautiful. I had no problems with the hills; I prefer the downhill to the uphill. I've run ultra trail marathons that were much harder. This was a fun run for me. I am definitely looking forward to running again next year. I enjoyed every bit of it - the people and the volunteers were wonderful. The neighborhood people came out of the homes and cheered us on, which made the event worthwhile. The rain/storm did not stop the fun. See everyone next year.

2011 half marathon - amazing race
This was my first half marathon (was signed up by a friend as a birthday gift). Forecast was rain and thunderstrom all the way. Had thought many times to call it off but showed up and it was worth it all the way. Best day of my life. Amazing supporters - they cheered all the way, and it never felt like I was running alone. Very difficult, so don't be shy if you have to walk. Well supported race. I know what I am doing in the second weekend of April next year (job/family permitting).

I am still on a runner's high!!!!
This event lived up to its name as America's Toughest Road Marathon, and I cannot wait to run this again. First of all, Roanoke is a awesome town and very welcoming. The race itself a mixture of unreal climbs and fast, very fast declines. The course was absolutely beautiful and the volunteers and the town supported this race with pride. It rained this year, then poured, and then we were deluged - and it all added to the mystique of this unbelievable race. Don't run the Blue Ridge Marathon if you are looking for a PR, but run it if you want one of the best marathon experiences you could ask for.

Beautiful course; super friendly support!
2011 - Lightning had the race called 5.5 hours in (heavy rain throughout), but everything to that point was phenomenal! The course is challenging and lovely, with superb support. Plenty of port-a-potties and hydration all along the course; at least two stops had fruit, and residents were out to cheer in all inhabited areas (quiet and beautiful along the Parkway) - even warm pumpkin bread from one family! Runners were also mutually supportive. I highly recommend the Blue Ridge to anyone who knows what they're in for - the hills are no joke. ;)

Be ready for the challenge...amazing race!!!
We have many hills in Nashville and as I heard about this course through the last 6 months, I opted to take this challenge and train on the hilliest of hills in my town....nothing compares to these two mountains and hills on this course...you go up and down, up and down, and weave in and out of the city....when you think you are done with a hill...well, there comes another one....this was an amazing race despite the monsoon like conditions yesterday....the spectators were very supportive, the volunteers were helpful....Roanoke is a beautiful city...around the 16th mile, I thought to myself, 'This is fun...hard, but fun.' I enjoyed it...if you are up for a challenge, then sign up for 'America's Toughest Road Marathon.' You won't regret it!!!

Beautiful course, wonderful support
What a beautiful run! The mountains in the rain were majestic. What a great job by the volunteers and race organizers, who just acted as if every marathon is run in the pouring rain and had a great time of it. The beauty of the course would make this a must-do, but the people of Roanoke made it a classic.

Beautiful, hard course; enthusiastic volunteers
The course was fantastic - lots of great hills and beautiful trees. Volunteers were the most enthusiastic we've ever encountered. Organization was a tad lacking: packet pickup was unduly inefficient and the promised cell phones on the course to contact friends and family to see us on the StarCam were nowhere to be found (though one aforementioned AWESOME volunteer loaned me hers). Even in the rain, it was a lot of fun!

What an awesome experience!
I am a 43-year-old who has only started running in the last couple of years. I have run some 5Ks, but this was my first and only half marathon - and what a choice!!! I knew it would be hard, as I am from Roanoke and know how hilly our town is, but holy cow!! If I had run on the course beforehand, I probably wouldn't have done it. I am now so glad I did. What an accomplishment, and the people working the race were incredible. We had flash flooding that day and these people stood and encouraged us for hours. I don't know how many times I had slowed to a walk when up ahead I would see an encouraging face and it made me keep going and ultimately finish. By the way, I was glad it rained buckets - it makes my memories all the better! Thanks to all volunteers; you helped so many of us get through!

Hills, anyone?
This is a course for runners who enjoy scenery, a challenging course, and don't care about PRs. Though spectators are sparse, they and the volunteers make up for it in enthusiasm.
Pros:
+ RD was really on top of things. He had an alternate course for the final few miles to avoid flooding issues due to all the rain. Race was delayed only 10 minutes while he confirmed all police and EMT support were in place. He was also on hand at the expo efficiently handling any issues that popped up.
+ Scenery - Blue Ridge parkway in Virginia and several scenic overlooks (which unfortunately the weather conditions minimized)
+ Nice finishers medal
Cons:
- Weather rained only during the race (sunny day before and about 6 hours after the race had started). Even though I was soaked to the bone I enjoyed the course.
- Even though the art center was open prior to the race, all their bathrooms were locked - how tacky. You had to stand in the rain to use the portalets.
- No complimentary post-race massages. I saw a few massage therapists sitting around near the finish with no customers.
- cotton T-shirt. So many races have tech shirts that its a little disappointing to see cotton.
Runners who enjoy this race will also enjoy Ridge Runner WV and Grandfather Mtn NC.

'america's toughest'- an enjoyable challenge
BRM calls itself 'america's toughest road marathon'. I'm not qualified to pass judgment on that claim but I can say that it was the toughest course I've run. If you enjoy the challenge of running hills (and train for it) then this is a great marathon. It was also highly enjoyable, great course and I really liked the challenge of the hills. You have to have a real strategy on how to tackle them if you want to have a good run.
Organizers do a great job for such a small event, and I was very impressed by the community support, number of volunteers, and enthusiasm of the spectators.
Expo was, in a word, small (this is not a huge marathon) so don't expect to see the normal marathon expo vendors here for bargain shopping. Mostly local (non-running) supporters and Fleet Feet (thanks for coming out guys!)
Course is really nice, 3 climbs of note with the first one being the toughest. Peaks are at miles 7.3, 13.0 and 18.8.
Aid stations and course monitors are plentiful, with HEED and water at every one and gels / bananas / orange slices / gummi bears at selected ones.
Schwag Report - Nice medal, but no goodie bag, finisher item and no technical shirt. All you get is a cotton t-shirt which is a little meager for a full price ($80-100) marathon.
So in closing, this is a great marathon if you are looking for a challenging but enjoyable course and Roanoke VA is a great little town to spend a day or two in. Do it!

Even better than last year!
I ran the half-marathon last year and was hooked on the challenge of the course. With the course changes this year, it was even better! The rain was just a bonus to the difficulty of this race. It is not for the faint of heart, but once you run it, you will look forward to the challenge of running it again.

I'll be back Roanoke!
How to sum up my first attempt at 'America's Toughest Road Marathon'? Wet, tired, ready to try this again next year. The 2011 running of this new race will forever be remembered as the wet windy one:
PROS: -Small race = less hassles
-Beautiful course, green everywhere
-tons of on course support, food and gels/drinks plentiful
-Roanoke and its people, first class, lovely little city and truly some of the friendliest folks I have ever encountered.
-Ease of access, right off of Highway 581, hotels easy to find, plenty of attractions downtown
OTHER: I won't say 'cons' but rather here are some thoughts
-This course is very tough, this is not PR time and walking will happen for most casual runners
-The extra hill added between 16-20 is absolutely daunting, strategy and conservation are key.
The extreme hills may limit casual runner participation in the full
-Never thought I would have to walk on downhills but I did.
Everything is small scales don't expect the big expo or finish line fest. But what you do get is a race run by people who want you to enjoy yourself. Job well done!

Most rewarding run of my life
OMG! If I had previewed the course beforehand, I probably wouldn't have registered for it. Can you say, "2 MOUNTAINS?!?!" But fortunately, I showed up blindly and had the run of my life. Insanely challenging course, but my goal was simply to enjoy the scenery and finish before the cut-off time. Goal accomplished! My favorite and most memorable race experience ever! LOVED the fruit/pretzels at aid stations! LOVED the amazing landscape! LOVED faking a sprint to the top of a mountain and having the volunteer laugh/cheer me on. LOVED the awesome B&B that I stayed in. LOVED the volunteer that walked with me for a quarter-mile until I crested the hill and could start running again. The BEST running experience of my life!

I like the blue
My first marathon of the year and I loved it. The race was well organized, the ridges were blue, and I was happy I didn't fall. The running community in Roanoke was fantastic; great crowd support, though sparse in places. Did not matter. Lots of bananas, which came in handy. Minimal cramping!
Overall, I was thoroughly impressed and look forward to limping around next year post-run. The good people of Virginia know how to put on a running event.
Incidentally, there are some hills. But remember that there are also free bananas. They offset each other.

Challenging and a lot of fun
I ran the half marathon; it was my fifth half. I don't want to repeat what has already been said, but I can echo all of the praises I have read. I found that the course was tough, but I only came within 10 minutes of my PR. I think you use different muscles going up, coming down , and then returning to somewhat flat ground. By the time I came off of the mountain, I wanted to stretch my legs out and had plenty left at the end. So that said, it was tough but not as bad as I thought it would be.
The organization was outstanding for a first-year race. Plenty of water stations and more importantly there were porta-johns on the course (an often overlooked necessity). The shirt was OK, but the medal was one of the best I have ever gotten, so maybe that is the trade off. Great job; I plan on being there next year and doing the full!

A marathon for everyone's bucket list
This is a beautiful but challenging course. It was one of my favorite marathons of the 24 I have run. I loved the mountain scenery, greenway paths, and great community support. Race organization was outstanding.

Awesome event - in every respect. Loved it!
Although this was only my second half-marathon race (lots of 10-milers and shorter under my belt), this race was by far the BEST I've ever experienced. Everything - the pre-race communication, event coordination, course support/care, volunteers, community support - was excellent. I trained as best I could in flat, southeastern VA, and I'm so glad I did. The course was challenging and beautiful. I can't wait for next year, and will definitely work harded on hill training to improve my time. If there is any way you can make it to Roanoke (an awesome city, by the way), DO NOT MISS the 2011 run!

Shirts in Women's Sizes, Please!
We want the technical shirt with the great design in women's sizes. Thanks! Super first race. Already planning to run again next year. Want to tackle that beast.

Superbly Done, Star City!
The most difficult half marathon I've ever done. Well organized, fantastic volunteers, and a lot of fun. Two recommendations: 1. In addition to the technical shirt, a quality long-sleeve tee (like those from the Marine Corp Marathon) would be welcome. As a previous comment stated, the nicer the shirt, the more it's going to be worn and seen. 2. Disposable chips.
Definitely plan to do the full in 2011.
Kudos to all involved for a phenomenal inaugural event!

Top quality - I HIGHLY recommend it!!!!!!
The inaugural Blue Ridge Marathon was my 37th overall and my 19th in just over four months. I can easily say that, although this was, by far, the most difficult course I've run, it was one of the best marathons I have ever run and I will be back many, many times!
First off, I didn't know it was possible for an inaugural race to go so smoothly. The RD always screws something up. This one didn't. I am amazed at how good a job they did. The communication via their Facebook page was fantastic too.
Pros:
* Course - this should get 6 stars. While challenging, it was so beautiful! My iPod stayed in my SPI belt the entire time. It was like watching the best nature movie ever - the time just flew by.
* Location - Roanoke, VA is the friendliest place I have been to in a long while. All I have to say is wow, the locations supported this thing like they were all running it.
* Spectators - OMG. There were many, many, many out there and they all must have gone to cheering school. They were so enthusiastic and loud that I felt like a rock star. I've never seen so many spectators - and at a marathon with fewer than 1,000 people, I don't think I ever will.
* The finish line was a memory to last a lifetime!
* Medal - WOW! Look carefully and there is some unbelievable detail in it. I love it! And it has a fantastic ribbon too.
* Half marathon option - The half marathoners were great! A lot of the time they just get in the way of marathoners due to their inexperience but they were awesome - we all cheered for each other. Nothing to worry about here.
* Awesome staging area at the museum!
* Great finish area - bagels, fruit, Coke and Diet Coke, pretzels. Yum, perfect!
* I really liked the fact that they had Hammer HEED instead of Gatorade. For a marathon this hard, the higher quality electrolyte beverages are great. Aid stations were plentiful!
I think I will do this marathon every year. I live within a 3.5-hour drive and will come back as long as I live in the area.

Beast of the Blue Ridge
It takes a lot of planning and a lot of people to pull off a successful marathon. Having run 59 marathons, I am happy to rate it in the top 20 that I have run. The course was difficult - but proper training and the magnificent view along the way made it worthwhile. Everything about the marathon except the shirt was high-class. The shirt has a lot of potential with our Star and the Blue Ridge Mountains and possibly a Beast. One runner commented, "At least it feels good." As we ran through South Roanoke, our spirits were lifted by the people who live there and other spectators. In running 58 marathons, I had always been envious of runners who had friends cheering for them. This was my first time to have friends who were fantastic cheerleaders along the way.
The one element that impressed me the most - among many elements - was that the times were online within a few hours after the marathon.
Thanks for putting Roanoke on the map for sponsoring a Beast of the Blue Ridge Marathon that we will never forget.

Great Race
Beautiful but brutal sums it up. It is the kind of marathon that you definitely will be back for or definitely will NOT be back for. The course is terrific but there are some serious climbs in the first half and plenty more shorter, but steep hills to deal with after that. It was exteremely well organized with plenty of aid stations and wonderful volunteers. Crowd support is sparse, but there were plenty of enthusiatic spectators. I am already looking forward to next year.

Fantastic first-time event
I did the half - great course, great location. Lots of water and lots of support along what I thought would be a lonely course. My only "complaint" is the old-school timing chip. This a must-do race if you're looking for a new challenge. I will definitely be back in 2011.

First 16 miles are amazing!
Wonderful support and good communication beforehand. Only 2 things I would change:I love my Gatorade! And, spruce up the shirts. The cooler the shirt, the more I wear it, the more people see it, the bigger the race is next year. Definitely running it again!

It was everything they promised it would be.
The course was challenging throughout, with lots of hills, some long climbs, and some very steep sections, both up and down. The scenery was gorgeous, and the support was great, with plenty of energetic and encouraging volunteers handing out bananas and pretzels just when you really needed them.
Communication before the event was thorough; packet pick up was smooth; and parking was easy.
A well done event on a beautiful course.

As Advertised!
Beautiful course, great fans, and as we were told, a tough course; but I think that's what made this race special. Fix the plastic cups and you will have the perfect marathon! Thanks for the memories!

For sure the hardest marathon in America
Having run two marathons in six months, including one last month, I chose the run the half. This was the hardest half I have run. However, the hills... er, mountains, come early. The grades are very steep going up Roanoke Mt. and going down Mill Mt. For their first race, the organizers did a great job.

A beautiful beast of a marathon course
The course is beautiful and brutal, especially in the first 15 miles. There were a few odd turns, especially around the campground section, but otherwise a great layout. The marathon was well organized. The only thing I would changes would be to get rid of the plastic cups that you can't pinch to drink out of. Crowds were enthusiastic but sparse in the mountain sections. Overall, a great time and beautiful course; my calves are still thinking about it.

It's a doozy.
Do your hill work. 19(!) water stops. Great support. Beautiful. But yeah, do your hill work. Thanks for the wonderful experience, Roanoke!

First-timer for the half!
For my first half-marathon ever, I had a wonderful experience! The course was well-organized, there was water and Hammer drinks available nearly every two miles, and the spectators/volunteers were amazing. It was advertised as "the most difficult marathon/half-marathon in the US" because of the mountain climb, but I didn't have any trouble. I think I may be hooked on running now.
