Will Run for Cheese...

This was a cheesy marathon! But that is not a bad thing. I have been trying to get down to Kenosha for this race for a few years. This year I made it. Preparing for the Milwaukee marathon, run four weeks ago, I challenged my marathon friend in Milwaukee that we run in Kenosha too. And so we did. We expected there to be a lot less people running in Kenosha, but they had the 5K, 1/2 marathoners, and the marathon runners all start at the same time, so it seemed a lot bigger - especially at the start and during the early part of the race. The race committee did a lot of up front work keeping runners informed during the weeks leading up to this event. And they had early registration in Milwaukee the weekend before - which I thought was a great idea. We had addresses for the Civil War Museum - where registration and check-in was held the day before, we had the road intersections where the start line was set up, and we had lots of detailed information on parking - which was most helpful. They even told up what streets we could legally park in, and between which cross-streets. They did a really good job on this stuff up front. Check-in was available before the start on Saturday, but it was discouraged. Especially since this race started at 7:00 a.m. There were just lots of people at the co-located start/finish line area. And there was a lot going on there too. They took drop bags, did check-in, and they had small cheese packets they were handing out before the race. Of course it was noisy there. When the National Anthem was playing, we could not hear - or see - what was going on, and it was half way through before many of the runners realized it and quieted down. But the P.A. system was too far away, and too low of volume. Sometimes that happens. They had a "cheese corral" for runners to start from for wearing something with cheese on it, or "something cheesy". I guess those folks got to start closer to the starting line. The marathoners and ½ marathoners were together the whole first half; the first half of the marathon course was the ½ marathon course. The course largely followed the Lake Michigan shore, but there was still a lot of the race through neighborhoods, where you could not see the lake. There were basically three "loops" or modified out-and-backs. The first loop going south, was shorter, then a longer loop to the north; those two together were the first 13.1. Then there was a longer second loop going south again, and it covered part of the route we already ran on. But it kept going south. I wondered if we were going to go into Illinois. Just past MP 19, we did a small loop that routed us back out by the lake with a spur at the end with the timing mat there. Crossing the mat, we made a U-turn and headed back. The second half of the course was in and out of neighborhoods, through wetlands and swamps, and though never off the road, there were sections further from town that were gravel. But nothing was unsafe. This entire course was on the roads, and probably 85% was paved/concrete. Since all the course was on closed roads, law enforcement had to keep wandering automobiles and distracted drivers from getting on the course. And those guys did a great job. It is interesting some of the neighbors who lived where the road was closed got personally involved, engaging with the runners and enjoying the day. Others - one guy in particular that I observed - was cross about the event that was going on, blocking him in. It was interesting that the finish line and the ½ way point were almost parallel courses set side-by-side. As I was approaching the 13.1 timing mat at about 2:40 into the race, the winner of the race was on his final approach to the finish line. Amazing! At the finish line, there was plenty to eat. Every runner got a brat and a beer (26.2 beer) with the tag attached to the bib. Closer to the finish line, another volunteer was handing out mini-bagels, and small discs of cheese - that fit almost perfectly on the bagel. There were chips, bottles of water, and rather green bananas. The gal there had lots of food, and she was passing out extras, if and as people asked. There was a guy finishing his 200th marathon, and one of the area running clubs was out to cheer him on. By chance, I was just slightly ahead of him, and all these folks - out in number, maybe 50 to 75 people - were lining both sides of the approach to the finish line. And I did not know about the guy doing his 200th until later, but all these people were there and they were all cheering me on as I passed by, slapping hands and doing high-fives as I finished. What a sensation. The weather was great. This year, winter and snow were trying to shorten our spring, so conditions could have been much different. But it was probably in the 40's overnight, and we were welcomed to a cloudless sky at daybreak. The sun was out early, and pretty much stayed out for the day. Maybe some high cirrus clouds factored in, and there were a few spots on shade on the course, but mid-60's is probably as warm as it got. And as close as we were to the lake, there was a cooling effect rolling in off the lake all day. It was near-perfect for running. Just needed a little sun-screen to keep exposed skin from being sun-burned. This was a great marathon, there were lots of volunteers, it had been well-planned and was well executed too. Well done!

Best spring marathon

I have run this 7 of the 10 and keep going back. Every runner is friendly and just out to run the best race possible. The course is pavement and gravel and the variation keeps legs fresh. Aid workers are superb as are the kids from Carthage college. Yes, it can be brutal weather along the lake, but then any race can be.

Excellent marathon all about the runners

I have run all but 2 of these marathons. It is hard to train for a spring marathon with Chicago winters but this one is worth the effort. Everyone is all about the runners having a great experience. It was extremely windy and cold, but well worth it. The course was new this year and it was much better. The half runners were with us up to mile 13 so more runners to share the course with. I do not know how they can do such a great job at a cost of less than 80 dollars. Some big marathons do not provide anywhere near the level of support they do. So I will be back next year even in the wind and cold. A special thanks to the little girl at mile 18 who made her dad put out water for us and she handed it out herself!

Many miles along the lake!

Loved this race mostly along/near the lake and even into the country, some through the town. Parking is minimum of .4 miles from start/finish. Need more portapotties at first aid station; 2400 starters and only 2 portapotties (20 people in line). Plenty of water/Gatorade; great volunteers. WINDY. Medal and shirt. Post-race had beer and brats and music.

Flat Scenic Course

This was my 7th marathon, and my first in Wisconsin. Packet pickup was small and easy. I liked that there was reasonably priced cheesehead gear at packet pickup. Overall the race was very well organized and I thought the start and finish were great. It was such a beautiful day and it was great to lay down in the grass and listen to the band. The course was a great half marathon, but once they split off, the 2nd part of the race had some desolate, not-so-pretty spots on gravel roads. I also didn't like all of the times I thought I was coming up to a turnaround point, only to turn right and continue onto another stretch. The parts through the beautiful neighborhoods were very nice, though. I wouldn't recommend this race to a newbie. Usually you need all the hoopla to keep you going, and this race is too small to offer that. The medals and shirts were also very nice.

Beautiful, Flat Course - Great PR Opportunity!

I was looking for a course to PR and qualify for Boston. It delivered! Perks of this race are below: 1. Flat course with beautiful views of the lake. 2. Weather in 2015 wasn't bad. The start was in the low 50s and near the end, it was in the mid 60s. 3. Fun atmosphere. Runners were dressed in 'cheesy' garb from cheese hats to funny t-shirts. I saw some ladies running in drindls! The after race party was fun with beers and brats. I saw 2 bands - one on the course and one at the after party. Both were fantastic. 4. Really well organized with minimal stress on race day. I liked that you had to pick up your packet before race day. They either mailed you your packet or you could pick it up in various locations around Chicago or Wisconsin. Parking wasn't a problem. We arrived 30 min prior to the start and got a free spot on the street.

Great small race

I have nothing but good things to say about this race. I'd definitely recommend it! Course: The first half of the course was a bit hilly but nothing too terrible and it was a bit crowded as the start was one mass start with the half marathon. As soon as the half split off (around mile 11.5), there was plenty of room and the course really flattened out after that as well. There were a few stretches on gravel with some larger rocks in the gravel that made for tricky footing a few times but it was definitely nothing treacherous. The course had stretches along the shores of Lake Michigan and through some nice lake neighborhoods then there were other areas that were several blocks or more off the lake. The breeze off the lake kept things cooler while near the lake (mid-50s to start and mid-60s at the finish) but the parts that were not along the lake got very warm (upper-70s) and they could have used 1-2 more water stations on miles 15-25. Organization: This is a small-town-type race with no expo (just a place to pick up your packet with two vendor booths in the room) and no big frills. Packet pickup went smoothly, the starting area was easy to navigate and the finishing area was decent as well. I love when a race realizes that women don't always want to wear big, boxy unisex shirts. This race had the option of a women's cut shirt. It was a short-sleeved technical shirt and true to size. The picture on the front wouldn't be my choice as there's a big wedge of cheese on it, but I'm not a fan of cheese. :) The finisher's medal was awesome! It looks high-end and is heavy with yellow stained glass in the middle (a piece of cheese) with a nice neck ribbon with the course map printed on it (&and more cheese). It also can double as a bottle opener! Fans: The fans were sparse but the ones that were there were great. There were very few people in the neighborhoods that came out to watch. So if you need huge crowds to cheer you on, this may not be the race for you. We stayed at the Radisson Harbourwalk Hotel in Racine, about 20 minutes away. I talked to a few people at the race that were staying at the host hotel (packet pickup) and they said their hotel was not allowing late checkout. We had no problems at our hotel in Racine in getting a 1pm checkout which allowed for a shower after the race and before driving 6 hours back home. Overall, it was a great course and a great race. I'd definitely recommend it!

Nice Scenery. Flat Course

I just ran the 2015 Half marathon. Positives: The course is both flat and a lot more scenic the I expected from Kenosha, WI. The views of the lake were beautiful and the neighborhoods we passed through were very very nice. Downsides: The parking. The race starts in downtown Kenosha and if you do not get there early you may be hard pressed to find a spot. I parked almost a mile from the starting line and had quite a walk. Overall, a very charming marathon

Great layout; would be perfect with a few tweaks

This was my second time running the marathon (1st was in 2012), and it's one of my favorite spring marathons. I enjoy the flat course, the great setup of the start / finish area, lots of parking and the views of Lake Michigan on the run in to the finish line. The two things that I wish were better, however, are the frequency of aid stations in the 2nd half of the marathon and the road conditions in the 1st half (specifically Simmons Island and JFK Parks). I would have preferred the aid stations closer to every mile rather than every other mile. And the roadways in the parks are just chewed up. I know the planners don't control the municipal budgets, but I'd have preferred better road conditions to the lakeside setting in the 1st half. Additionally, the 'loops' in the 2nd half are split between blacktop and gravel roads. The gravel roads are in good condition, but plan your racing shoes accordingly. I ran in adidas Boston 5, and I wished I ran in something with a bit more cushioning.

Awesome! Highly recommend it.

This was my first marathon ever and was very nervous going into it. Email correspondence was great. Was a beautiful and beginner friendly course. There was so much support from the sidelines. This is a great race and if you are looking for a first marathon. This is the one

Highly recommended small-town race!

I discovered this marathon for the first time back in 2012. It was my second marathon overall, and by the time I ran it for the third straight time in 2014, it was my 12th. I love this race and will gladly return every single year that I am able. What's not to like? For starters, the registration price is extremely reasonable in a world where race fees seem to be constantly on the rise. If you register early, it's $69 for the marathon and $49 for the half...and even if you decide to sign up the night before, the marathon is still under $100. For that, you get a beautiful, high quality medal (the 2014 edition is one of my all-time favorite pieces of bling), a very nice shirt, great on-course entertainment (gotta love the polka bands), and even brats at the finish (although I haven't been able to get one yet...more on that later). With all of that said, the Wisconsin Marathon is very small (a 4000-participant race cap, and they don't always sell out completely). In 2014, there were about 2070 half marathon finishers and only 847 marathon finishers. If I was going to make a recommendation, I'd say that the half marathon is probably the best way to go. We all run the first 12 miles together before the marathoners split off, and that first half is beautiful. You get to run through downtown Kenosha (which is a really pretty town), a gorgeous lakefront path (even better when the weather is nice and sunny), past Carthage College, etc... That's also where you see the most spectators and get to run with a larger crowd of people, so if you enjoy the half marathon distance and want a great experience, I would recommend doing that one. I've run the marathon for the past three years and will continue to as long as possible, because I love Wisconsin and am passionate about that race distance, but it does get a bit lonely in the second half, when we go through more secluded residential areas (although the beachfront houses are pretty awesome) and Pleasant Prairie. If you're a slower runner like me and end up near the back of the pack, those last miles can be rough, and the spectators naturally taper off, but the ones who do stick around are incredibly kind and supportive. I must say that Wisconsin has some of the nicest people who come out to cheer/organize the race, and that makes a huge difference. Even when the water stops started to get a little sparse after mile 20, there are people who stand in front of their houses and hand us their own water/Gatorade, which is awesome. And of course, once you get to about mile 25 and start sprinting to the finish, with the crowds/cheers picking up again, it makes the whole experience worth it. Overall, they do a fantastic job in Wisconsin, and I would bring up the name of this race to any friend who's looking for a new one to run. My only (small) gripe is that even though they have a 6.5-hour time limit, the brats are always gone by the time I get in at the 6-hour mark. I know that's a late time to be crossing the finish, and there's only so much they can do when it's a small-town race and most of the participants have finished. I've always wanted a brat, though, and I've never been quick enough to grab one at the end. Maybe this will be good incentive to work on my speedwork :) I hope you'll consider running the next Wisconsin Marathon with me in 2015...see you then!

Very nice race on a pretty, flat course

I really enjoyed this race! It's a nice size; small enough to be very easy logistically and not too crowded, but large enough that I was never running by myself. Course is very pretty, especially the parts right by the lake. There was one small area with some cracked, uneven pavement, but otherwise, nice surfaces and no traffic. Also quite flat, with just a few small hills on the north end. The out-and-back loops didn't bother me; it was fun to see other runners going by, and it made it an easy one to spectate (my husband saw me four times without having to drive anywhere). Volunteers were very friendly and knew exactly where the runners were supposed to turn. All water/Gatorade stops were well manned. Post-race festivities were great. A polka band, local beer, brats, and cheese. The medal is great, too. It includes a bottle opener on the bottom! Overall, I was very impressed. Great job!

Nicely organized small race

They do a great job with this race, except that they ran out of beer at the finish line. Aid stations were well stocked, and the first 1/2 is a very pretty course, but they ran out of beer at the finish line. This is a very nice small race that has been well organized in the past, and they never previously ran out of beer at the finish line. There was plenty of gels at the one aid station that it was available at, but there was no beer at the finish line.

Numerous out and backs

Well organized race and great volunteers. I had a hard time with the numerous out and backs seeing a few checkpoints 3-4 times. The pavement near the lake was a little dangerous with many potholes and cracks. Parking was close and free. Very pleased with packet pick up the week before in Skokie.

Quiet flat race with good medal and shirt

This was a small to medium sized marathon with 900 finishers for 2013 but there are lots of people running the half marathon so there were maybe 3300 on the road. I chose to do the VIP Package which included a night at the host hotel and packet pickup at the front desk. The only problem with that is if you want an extra night you have to go through the Best Western reservation process and there is no real co-ordination. That said, the hotel managed to keep me in the same room for both nights. There is no expo or anything like that. The short sleeve tech shirt is high quality and well designed. The finisher's medal is bright, bold, and intriguing and doubles as a bottle opener. Just what you need! As an extra you get 1 free beer and a free brat at the end of the race. There are hotels close to the start / finish which make things convenient. I stayed at the Best Western Harborside and it was very good, very quiet and I would recommend it. They had a pool and hot tub but I forgot my swim suit. They provided an early breakfast if you wanted to grab a bagel before the run and it is only a short jog to the start. Internet is via a provided cable in the room and WiFi was not available in the room. Check out is 11 AM with no exceptions so if you are staying two nights it is not a big deal, otherwise plan accordingly. The course is basically a loop around the down town area and then an out and back to the north and an out and back to the south. The course is flat as a pancake with no hills but the roads are rough on your legs. Parts are concrete, other parts are alligator cracked asphalt with loose pieces, and then toward the end there is gravel which likes to get in your shoes. All this is manageable just be aware of your footing. If you like seeing other runners going in the opposite direction then you will like the course. There are plenty of opportunities to see Lake Michigan and there are a few stretches with some interesting houses to look at. The route is pretty much car free, light on spectators, with good water / gatorade stops every 2 miles. I think I would like to see a few more water stops toward the end. The ones they had were well staffed and if you are a back of the packer like me, they did not run out of anything. While the weather can't be controlled, be aware the wind off the lake can be quite chilly. I didn't find any great restaurants in the area but I am sure there are some. I would advise avoiding the Chinese restaurant across from the hotel. It was pretty pathetic. It looks like they are trying to revitalize the downtown area which consists of a few square blocks but there are lots of empty storefronts and a lack of shopping. If I had stayed longer perhaps I could have found some interesting things to do but overall it was a quiet weekend. So the pluses are: small race, no cars, unique medal, beer and brats at the end and Wisconsin scratched off your 50 state list. Enjoy and happy running!

Nice, flat, scenic course...hilarious medal!

I really enjoyed this race a lot. The course is fine...very flat and friendly. It was a bit crowded around the north end of the course on Carthage College campus but besides that it was fine. I don't think the concerns about the gravel portions of the course are well founded...I found them a nice relief from the asphalt and concrete. The views of the gracious homes were really amazing. Wowzers, what places to run by!! The race was well worth the trip from Indiana for me. I PRed and had a great time.

Good Race- better double!

The Wisconsin Marathon is still young but has some aspects of marathons which are much larger. The swag is great. The tee- shirts are very well designed and high quality. The finishers medals are very cool and the volunteers were given t- shirts that made them all appear like they were in ' The Blues Brothers' with coat and ties. The coarse was kind of out and back loops that ran through downtown several times ( great for spectators). Despite the loops there was no confusion about where the coarse went. The volunteers knew just where the runners should go. The packet pickup was a breeze ( and you could buy 'Cheese Head' gear at great prices. ) The B-tag timing was high tech and conveniant. Downsides include a lack of corals or pacers that lead to a lot of traffic early in the race, a super small expo with limited emergency supplies, and no timing mats at key turnarounds to reduce the risk of cheating. Results took a long time to be posted online despite the electronic timing. The course itself had lots of great views of Lake Michigan and some nice breezes. The only tough part was a boring out and back around mile 19. There were some gravel roads (a plus for me). Nice and scenic overall. One thing that puzzled me was why the race didn't play up the 'Mittens Challenge'. This race is the first of a weekend double with the Kalamazoo marathon. There was almost no mention of the challenge at all, either before or during the race. That is too bad because Kenosha and Kalamazoo are both great races and the alliance is a worthy one that will definitely attract a lot of marathon crazed runners! Overall, a good experience. It's worth the trip!

No late checkouts? Really?!?

This was a good small race, but could have been much better. Pros: -They let you use headphones -The shirts were nice. I like that they had ladies and mens shirt sizes. -The race hotel was close to the start and finish lines. They also had breakfast early for the runners. -The packet pickup was as easy as possible. There were actually several different places to pick up the packets (even in different cities), and if you stayed at the race hotel, you received your packet at check in. Very convenient. -Loved that all the post race food (bananas, bagels, etc) were in one place in a bag at the end. Post race party food (brats) was good too. Cons: -My biggest gripe is that I paid for a VIP package at the race hotel, and they didn't offer late checkouts. In fact, there were no options at all for late checkouts. Seriously? How am I supposed to check out at 11 when I will still be running then?!? -The water stations were not shown on the course map so you know where they will be and can plan for them -This was a small race, and it didn't have an expo. There were only three tables at the packet pickup. -There were no corrals or pacers, so people of all different speeds were all over the place. It was difficult to weed through the slower people at the beginning. -There are a lot of out and back places in this race, and there were no chip checks/mats at some of the turn arounds to make sure people went the full distance. How can this be a BQ if you can't be sure that people didn't skip some of the route? -There were not enough volunteers. I had to pick up my own water off at least one of the water tables. Suggestion: get water stations sponsored by churches or schools. Checked Wisconsin off my list, but won't run it again.

Great Marathon!

I really enjoyed this marathon. The course was nice and flat and the weather was cool. I ran a PR on this course and finally got the BQ time I have been shooting for. There was a head wind on the final 6 miles but there was a nice tail wind leading up to that. I do not think the road conditions were a problem. Thank you to the volunteers and race directors for putting on a great race!

Flat well organized race

I came to Kenosha to run my Wisconsin marathon and I was not disappointed. I came into Chicago and it was just a short dive up the interstate. I picked up my packet on Friday in Kenosha. The web site said there were also packet pick-ups in Chicago earlier in the week. It was super quick but there is no expo so I had to hunt down a sporting goods store to get some gel. I really liked the short sleeve tech shirt we got. It really reflected the sense of fun that this race seems to encourage. Race day we dodged a bullet weather wise. It was raining quite hard right up to almost race time. With the wind coming off the lake it was quite cold. The rain stopped before the gun and once I got running I felt pretty good. The north bound sections of the course we got a head wind and I felt a little cool there but otherwise the weather became a non factor. If you hate wind you may want to reconsider this race. I suspect running along Lake Michigan that wind is almost always a factor but I can't say for sure. The course is very flat. A few very short hills the first half and nothing but a pancake the second half. Lots of folks have commented on the conditions of the roads. There are a few short sections early on where the roads are the type where there have been dozens of filled pot holes. You do need to pay attention but it is early in the race and the sections don't go on for long. The limestone sections on the second half didn't bother me too much. There are a fair amount of potholes and you have to pay attention but I appreciated the easier surface on my legs. Volunteer support was great. Someone was at every intersection and most of them were cheering you on. They did what I feel like all races should do. Water was in the plain cups and Gatorade was in cups marked Gatorade. Race directors take note. This is a little thing but late in the race when you are tired it really helps. After the race folks who can handle heavy food (that is not me) were treated to brat sandwiches and beer. I took my great medal and headed to my car. There is ample parking near the race area so I didn't have to walk far or wait for a shuttle bus. I really feel like this race is an excellent, well organized small race.

No complaints about race itself.

This was my first time running this event and my comments do not relate to the race itself at all. The course was fine and the aid stations were great! Spectators were spectacular! This year's shirt and medal seemed geared toward a male demographic with a busty female on them. It also seemed strange to me that one of the sponsors was a cheese maker from Vermont...it would be great to find someone more local. I was desperately in need of ibuprofen at the end but could not locate an aid tent. (I had forgotten to add some to my bag.) Making the aid tent more visible would be my only suggestion for improvement and even that does not affect the race. I was a bit hesitant to sign up as I know the area very well, but found it to okay.

Very Pretty Course and Awesome Medal

Loved the race, great organization, beautiful medal, great shirts, beautiful course. The weather was lousy but that can't be helped. The cold and wind was awful anytime I ran north. The course was very pretty going through some beautiful neighborhoods and parks. The hills could barely be considered hills, and yes the pavement was uneven in the first half, but just watch where you're going. The limestone road in the second half was no big deal. It was very smooth and well packed. I was glad when the half marathoners branched off, I finally had space to run. I never felt alone on the last half, there were always people in front and behind me. The spectators were aweome and very encouraging. Everyone was so friendly. Too bad it was so cold and windy, the post race party would have been much more fun. After people finished running it seemed everyone pretty much left to get warm. I will definitely run this one again. The medal is one of the best, most detailed and colorful I've ever gotten in running 28 marathons. Lining up at the start was easy, there weren't blocks of gates to find the one opening in as with so many marathons these days. I can't think of anything negative to say about this race!

Nice friendly marathon

This was my 41 marathon and second time running this marathon. It has improved. Getting rid of that Heed (or was it called 'Heet') sport drink was a major improvement. It also helped to take out that first loop. I did not care for the watery sport gel, but my friend did. Nice flat and really fast course. Running back into the wind starting at mile 19 was a beast, but fun now that it is over. I liked that I had only a little over 6 miles to run at the hairpin turnaround around mile 19. That was a great felliing. Smart to design the course so that we did not have to run back through the wooded area. While I liked the wooded area, I did not have the mental energy to run back through it. Easy to park and walk to the start. No traffic issues. The race was smaller in size, especially after the half-marathoners left the course. Still, there were enough runners so that I always had other runners with me. Over all, this is simply a nice midwestern marathon, one that is well organized and enjoyable. Good price, also! I will run this race from time-to-time.

well organized and well supported

Flat but windy. I enjoyed running on the portion of the course on the gravel roads. Plenty of volunteers. Aid was good. Well organized pickup. Pasta dinner at the Masonic temple was great. I would recommend this marathon.

The Big Boys Could Learn From This One!

I ran the half marathon and could not be more pleased with the organization and treatment of runners. The race course is very scenic. The water stations were well manned & the volunteers were enthusiastic. The medal was outstanding and the finish area included a free brat & beer to each runner. The only negative was the lousy weather. Quite candidly, I have paid alot more for other better marketed runs and received alot less!

Great Race! Great Course! Well Organized!

Today May 5th, 2012, couldn't ask for better weather. Temps were 50 degrees, winds were a non factor except southern half we got hit with headwind of 11mph. Hydration station was great and were every 2 miles. Volunteers were awesome, Crowd was small. Full Marathon felt I was all alone. The bad roads some have talked about were just a small patch nothing bad. The hills were hardly what I could consider hills. My only complaint was there is a gravel portion that if it was 100% crushed limestone wouldn't be bad but there were several big sized pieces that made painful when running over them with racing flats. Aside from that, what happened at Boston almost happened with Kenosha as just a few days prior to the race it was 85 degrees! I plan on running this one next year as well

Big love for Wisconsin

I ran the half in 2010 and thought it was very organized and a lot of fun for a small race. Came back in 2011 to run the full and had the time of my life! Volunteers are wonderful. Course is good and not crowded, especially in the later miles after we split from the half marathoners. Just a few rolling hills. I don't like the gravel roads. Finished in a Boston qualifying time :)

Flat course; good local support

This was my first Wisconsin Marathon. I did not train correctly for it. I'm from the Northwest, and we don't know what flat is, so I did very poorly. The course is a challenge as the pavement is broken in many parts - it's very easy to catch a toe in. The out-and-back is pretty boring, but the views of the lake were worth it. I wonder if there is someway to run the course through parts of the city. This is a very small event. You get there, check in your clothes, and they say, "Go!" There's no real celebration (which is not a bad thing). I missed most of the post-race party, but my family said the worst part was waiting at the end of the race with the band playing some wild music. (My family is all in their 50's, 60's, and 70's), I thought the band was entertaining for the 15 minutes I heard them, but I was too cold and sore to hang around. I like the medal, but the shirts were kind of boring.

Perfect weather + flat course = PR

The weather was in the 50's at the on time start for this race. There were a couple very minor hills in the first half of the marathon, however the second half proved to be as flat as can be. The only downside to the second half of the course in my eyes were the 3 sections of fire roads. I found myself looking down and dodging the larger stones at a time I wish I could be looking up and focusing on stride and breathing. There were very few spectators on the second half of the course, but I do remember some very motivated and enthusiastic volunteers singing and chanting very loudly. All in all though a very fast course. Add the fact that this race had little congestion at the start of the race like some of the larger marathons and what you have is a go go course. Post race was very well organized in my eyes in that there was plenty of water, energy drinks and bananas handy right after receiving my finishers medal (which by the way is a cheese theme and in my opinion one of the more eye catching and original finisher medals out there). Though I wasn't up for a beer, I did cash in my bib ticket for a very tasty brat. The volunteers were fantastic and appreciated.

Awesome race!

First, the volunteers were by far the best of any race I've run. For the most part they were young military (Navy) personal, and kept us motivated and energized throughout the race. I'm sure they pulled a lot of people through with their constant encouragement. The overall organization was top notch. The course for the most part was top notch with the exception of broken/loose/missing concrete part of the route heading north along the lake. It wasn't horrible as long as you were paying attention. Other than that, it was clearly marked and it would have been hard to get lost if you tried. The post-race party looked fantastic, although it was very cold at the end when I finished. They did hand out blankets at the end, which you needed after you finished. The brat was great and the beer cold, and a nice covered area in which to eat and socialize. I finished with a PR 11 minutes better than my previous best. Overall I would recommend this marathon to anyone.

Very nice small marathon!

I have run many marathons and this one, for it's size, was well done. Easy access to the start with good parking, started right on time, course was well marshaled (thanks NAVY!), aid stations were sufficient and the spectators who were there were nice and friendly. The tech running shirt was very nice (not cluttered up with sponsor logos) as was the medal and a free brat and beer waiting at the finish is not bad either. 3/4 of the runners ran the half marathon which made the course a little crowded the first 11 miles or so. After that, it was a walk (run) in the park. The course was very scenic with numerous long sections run right along the lake. Yes, there was a small section of crushed gravel on the course, but it was actually a nice change of pace. If you are looking for a big time event, this is not your event. If you want a great small town marathon that is everything this one is advertised to be, check it out.

Course ok; need more water stops

First thing that was good was that the course was flat and pretty along the lake. The bad thing was that there were gravel areas, and the the water stops were way too far apart if you were running the marathon. Not having any awards is just plain cheap. You can get some cheap medals, if nothing else. The after party was nice by the lake and the brats were good; I could have had more than one free beer.

PR'd in 2011

Things I liked: -Flat course -Cool weather -PR'd by 11 minutes -Second half had some gravel sections, which I actually prefer to the roads -Navy support in the second half: they had a lot of enthusiasm and one cadet gave me a banana Suggestions for improvement: -More water stops -More checkpoints where you can see splits (only one was at the half) -More traffic control at the end. I found it confusing dodging through the crowd at the end. -Option to pay extra to have your packet mailed. There really wasn't an expo, so why not have this option?

Port-o-potties, please!

Though I only ran the 1/2 this year, I feel it needs to be mentioned: Wisconsin, please, port-o-potties are, well, portable, so please move them around the course and not just at the start/finish line. I did the Madison Marathon and it had the same problem. I'm not sure if it is a state-wide problem or just on the south side. One can't always predict when a gastro problem will arise!

Great spring marathon off beautiful lake Michigan

Really enjoyed this marathon. Well organized, post-race: delicious beer, brats and music, and for this year, perfect weather. Course follows the lake, then winds through neighborhoods and back to the lakefront again. Flat course with very minor hills. Aid stations were well-stocked with Gatorade and water; there were gels at 2 locations. Potties at start were empty 45 minutes before the race, but lines were longer 20 minutes before the race. Course passes public restrooms at mile 6 and 10 - a nice touch. Highly recommended as a small marathon that feels big.

Great hometown marathon!

I live in Kenosha, and often use parts of the course for training. So I'm a little biased. It is a generally flat and fast course. My complaints are that more port-a-potties are needed (although they definitely added a lot more from 2009 to 2010), and some of the terrain needs work. Around miles 5 and 6, there is a lakeside road that is a minefield of potholes. Then, around mile 17 - 20, the road turns to gravel. Ouch. I'd prefer to see the course include a little more of Kenosha, too. The second half runs through a small, very high-class village, but it's really flat and gets tedious. (A course turn into Kenosha might attract more spectators, too.) Despite that, I've run this race in '09, and I've seen many improvements in '10. I expect it to improve further and recommend this race.

Very Good Boston Qualifier

The packet pickup with multiple locations was a good idea. Parking was easy; just remember the streets. After the race, my tired muscles did not appreciate the wandering around trying to find my car. Weather was great (temps of 55 to 70 F). The wind was a little stiff at times, but since the course had little going west, it was okay. Good course marshals kept runners on the right route. The course had several out-and-back legs, which I did not like. Good spectator support, including "GO NAVY" guys and gals along the way. The brat after the race hit the spot, though the beer did not. The course did keep me interested; it did not drag on. The start has less congested than many. More porta-johns are recommended. They had a midpoint timing clock, but formally clocked splits would have been nice at several points. Overall, I had a great time, qualified for Boston, and would come back again.

Organized, flat, small-town marathon

Nicely done marathon. Particularly liked the Navy volunteers who made the 2nd half of the marathon so enjoyable. They were very enthusiastic, full of energy and encouragement. I also liked early packet pickup in IL, making race day less hectic. Plenty of free parking, hassle-free run. What a clean city, with very friendly people. Only negative: with the warm and humid conditions, we could have used more aid stations in the last miles of the marathon. And more Gatorade. Other than the warm conditions, it was a very positive experience and one to recommend to others looking for a well run, local, spring marathon.

Solid race; not a lot of excitement

I agree with many of the other comments on the race. I thought it was well organized but didn't have a lot of frills. I really appreciated the Chicago area packet pick-up. It would be nice if the parking were a little closer to the start area. I had no problem at the start and didn't feel there was congestion. It was fun doubling back on other runners a couple of times to look for friends. Running over the same roads a few times is a mixed bag. The first half of the course was definitely more interesting than the second. I didn't notice a lack of water on the second half and even got extra water from residents who were just helping out. A few of them had hoses too and that was really nice. The crowds were very sparse on the second half, but those who were out were very friendly. The few gravel roads were worn smooth and not an issue for me - not trail-like at all. I liked the finish area a lot and did not encounter lines for brats or beer. For a marathon of this size, there were some fun goodies and a good festive atmosphere. My only major complaint about this race was the weather. I'd hoped for more typical spring weather and this was too summery for my taste. So, overall, great job to the race director and volunteers. Just crank up that lake breeze for next year!

decent

For a small, low-price marathon, this was a decent race - great views of the lake, adequate parking, and access to porta-potties at the start. Decent crowd (and volunteer - thank you, Navy!) support in the first half and a nice medal. There were sections in the second half that were on crushed stone; this was not a big deal, and the folks complaining about it being a trail marathon clearly don't know what a trail marathon is.... Areas for improvement: -We were informed 5 minutes prior to the start that the course would be open to traffic. -Broken pavment from mile 5-10.... -Miles 13-22 were very isolated and had no crowd support - not a great section of the race for this to occur. In addition, there was no turnaround point (mile 19) timing mat, which would make cheating very easy. Again, overall this was a decent race, but I'd recommend changing the second half of the course to go farther north or to some other location that is not as isolated.

Nice small marathon but needs better aid stations

I ran the half while two friends ran the full. The course is quite pretty, winding up the lakefront, but the road is rather beat up in spots, making it important to watch your footing. The crowd was small, but cheerful, and the post-race party was great, with music, brats, and beer. However, the aid stations were seriously lacking. Gatorade was gone by the time we hit the second aid station, and we were not back of the pack either. I find that unacceptable in a long race. My friend did report that there was Gatorade after the half runners split off at mile 12. Also, each aid station needs a couple of more porta-potties. Finally, I thought about grabbing a bit of Vaseline from medical at a station to prevent chafing, only to find that I couldn't spot where medical stuff was! So, overall, it is a nice race, but it still could use some work.

Nice, friendly, small race

This was a fun little race. Being a pro "cheesy" race, it was fun to see runners dressed as cows, Cheeseheads, and German beer maids. Granted, the course was a little loopy, but it was mostly flat and showcased a lot of the lakefront. Near mile 18 we sort of ran off into the middle of nowhere, but running on the gravel road was easier on the knees. A more detailed and printable course map would be good to help anticipate the loopiness and to tell family where to watch. Crowd support was scattered, but very friendly and motivating. The Navy volunteers who helped direct runners were also motivating, sometimes randomly shouting, "Hoo-rah" as you run past. Water and Gatorade could've been a little more abundant, as it warmed up, but the purple Gatorade was a nice change of pace. The post-race party was fun. With a band and a nice large lawn area to stretch and relax in. It was cool to have a brat after rather than just the average bagel. It would be nice to see more cheese than just string cheese. As for the lack of an expo, its a small race, and after seeing the same stuff at expo after expo, I didn't mind not having one. The race shirt wasn't the greatest, so a little nicer of one would be cool, or it would be good to have other race merchandise for purchase. Overall, it's a nice race!

OK local race

Basically a nice, local, spring race. Just recommend working on the little things for next year. Possible improvements could include having a seeded start or at least eliminating the gates at the start line so that it is easier to self-seed. Since the roads are narrow for 3,000 runners during the first two miles, I would recommend removing the orange cones and other street objects at the start of the race. I understand that they are to divide the road for later in the race when it is two-way runner traffic, but you basically cannot see these road hazards until its too late during the first two miles. Many bathrooms were not stocked with TP so even some of the basics were missed. But the race started on time, the water stops were high-level, and given the route options in the area, the out-and-back loops are really the best choices. I think the real potential for race growth is with the half-marathon.

Great sophomore effort. Improved vs. 2009.

I ran the marathon last year, and just the half this year. The course was improved over last year. I didn't like the 4-mile loop, but understand that there are geographic limitations to changing the course (lake to the east, Sheridan is a hard cut off to the west). I would like to see Kenosha get behind the race and repave the path along the lake going north. This is a pretty spot, with awful pavement. Aid stations were great for the half. Good volunteers and nice crowd support downtown and near the finish. I agree with the comments that the start is too narrow. That problem is maybe a one-block problem though, because things did open up after that. I would love to see age-group awards, but the lack of them would never keep me away.

Well organized; a bit hillier than advertised

Overall the marathon was well organized and it was very easy to park near the start. The volunteers were great too, especially in the more desolate stretches from mile 16-20. The "rolling" hills over the first 10 miles were a bit more difficult than I had envisioned from the website advertising it as a "flat," fast course. The weather was a bit warm and humid from the start (62 degrees with 78% humidity), which prevented most people I spoke to from achieving PR's - including me. All in all, this was a solid course for those running a spring marathon and very convenient for Chicagoans.

Needs Work

The 2010 Wisconsin Marathon was a decent but flawed event. First to good - the course was flat and thus pretty fast. The road surface in some parts was pretty chewed up - potholes - and in some parts you were running on streets with pretty significant crowns. But overall, the scenery was good - running along Lake Michigan for much of the route. No hills to speak of. The start was a bit off as, instead of seeding people by pace, they put people with "cheesehead" gear in the front. I'm sorry - that would be fine for a 5K, but not a marathon. So I had to run around them in the cheese head first mile. The organization was in need of improvement. Although I was not there at the time, I was told that they missed the lead running crossing the finish line. Apparently, they were surprised and didn't even have the tape ready for him to break. I finished in the top 50 and was pretty spent at this point and may have missed something, but as I was trying to catch my breath I expected someone to at least ask if I was OK. Nothing. The medical support seemed a bit light; I looked over and there was one ambulance at the finish line with one hefty looking paramedic person sitting on the bumper, looking bored. Just a little girl handing out a medal (same medal for full and half marathon). It was pretty anticlimactic. The race results were not broken down between men and women - nor were age group awards given or even tallied. All in all, if they are going to keep this as a marathon, it should not be conducted as a family fun run 5K.

Overall, great race; meed more water near the end

This was my first marathon and wasn't sure what to expect. Overall, I thought it was a very well organized race and easy to get to starting line. The aid stations from about mile 16 on were a little too far apart. I found myself not getting enough water on the back half of the course. Wish a few more spectators were around in back half where runners really could use the extra motivation. Overall the course was pretty good. There were a few areas in the first half where the lakefront path was pretty broken up and hard to run on, but the road sections were nice.

"Wesconsin" Marathon? Really??

This was my 65th marathon and 9th different marathon in Wisconsin. Course was relatively flat and fast - mostly asphalt, with some concrete and some gravel road areas. Some nice views of the lake. Picturesque area. Don't expect porta-potties along the marathon course. If there were any, they must have been well hidden... bad situation for both participants and volunteers. Although water stations were said to be 2 miles apart, it was a good thing that some of the residents gave out water also. There was a pickup truck forcing its way through the runners in the mile 18-19 area... forcing participants off of the road. Where there were police at intersections, they seemed confused as to what their role was. Half marathoners outnumber marathoners by 3 to 1, and without separate starting times, it made the first 12 miles relatively crowded. The announcers were definitely not from Wisconsin... they couldn't even pronounce it correctly and seemed to mock Wisconsin's culinary delights. Expensive event for what you get from the organization. No age group awards. A beer (in WI, 1 is just an appetizer) and a brat (in a half pita). Tech shirt and medal are average. I liked the early 7 a.m. starting time. The wind was strong and it stayed cooler with the clouds and sun battling for supremacy. Thankfully the clouds won most of the time. There are 25 outdoor marathons in Wisconsin, and with that much competition, these organizers need to step it up a notch.

no frills but solid

Well organized for only its second year. Really disappointed with packet pick-up, as there were no items to buy if you forgot or needed something (except for GU). Fans were sparse, but it was family friendly for seeing runners multiple times due to the course layout. Would recommend this race to fellow runners.

Solid local/regional marathon

My 23rd marathon, and first in Wisconsin. Very well organized. I liked the lake views, but other commentators are correct: the double loop isn't all that interesting. No expo, but who cares: go to an R'n'R Marathon if you really want that. I enjoyed my trip to Kenosha and encourage others to consider this for a Wisconsin Marathon. Nice folks came out to cheer over the last several miles.

Good stuff

Very laid back event that is well organized. Parking is easy and free. With 20 minutes before the horn sounds, you can get right up to the start line, so no worries about congestion. It's scenic along the lake and goes through some older, charming neighborhoods. The mile or two on the gravel roads was a surprise, but if you like trail running, this is a plus. Ample aid stations well stocked with water and Gatorade, and great volunteers including the US Navy directing the way. Most of the crowd support was in the town with sparse support outside of some residential homes. The second half got warmer, and in certain parts of the course the headwinds were gusty up to mile 19-20 (then you did a loop and rode them home, which was nice). It's for sure a PR marathon course as it's flat like a pancake and one for those looking to qualify for Boston (has a small hill or two and a few potholes to dodge). It looked like a great party at the end, as the half marathoners were downing the beers and brats. A little broken myself, so I just stuck to the well stocked fruit and water. The pre-run in early April was great before the marathon and was hosted by the Kenosha Running Club. Jonathain Cain was there to show you the course ahead of the race. Well done, and my continued well wishes as you build this into a bigger event. Most of the Cheeseheads were from Ohio, which was funny! Wisconsin, you've got to show them up in 2011.

Great race with a few hills to keep it honest.

The course is fun. It makes it easy for spectators to follow their runners. Organization seemed fine. Needed more water/Gatorade stops due to the weather all of a sudden warming up. Food line was too long, maybe due to so many last-minute sign ups? Need to have the roads swept - especially by the lake - the night before or morning of. Fun, beautiful experience.

More Gatorade needed for a warm day

The beginning of the course was a bit confusing and very congested (a couple of loops in and around Kenosha before the marathoners went on their out-and=back trek at mile 12) but well directed so it worked out ok. Not sure why the previous commenter would have taken the turn for the half if they were doing the full (?). The last 2 water stops of the half marathon (miles 10 and 12 of both races) had no Gatorade, and since I was running the marathon I was confident that I would get some at the 14-mile water stop and beyond (and I did); however, I had gone without since mile 8 (6 miles without) - not good for a very warm and humid day. At the mile 14 water stop I suggested to the person there (who said she was able to contact the RD's) that there may be none for us marathoners when we returned back toward the start area (the end of the race for us). She was very helpful and said she would try to take care of it. However, there was none at the end of the marathon, as I suspected. It was a tough day for a marathon - warm and humid. More Gatorade was needed. It is difficult to predict the weather, but if there is any question about what it might be, more would be better. Good organization, so-so swag (a short-sleeve tech shirt), no expo (ok with me), and ok post-race food (yummy brat!). Good job for year #2.

Fix the pavement

I hurt my foot and had a bad day, but overall enjoyed the experience. This could be an outstanding race with a few tweaks. Positives: +The first half of the course, with views of Lake Michigan almost all of the time, is beautiful +Well organized +Nice medal! +Short-sleeve tech shirt +Navy volunteers are great +All of the volunteers are great Negatives: -Much of the pavement through the park in the first half is dangerous, rutted, uneven, patched, pot-holed, or just bad -The second half of the course is boring and seemed to go on forever -There are a few miles of crushed gravel in the second half; is this a trail marathon? Overall, this could be a great race if they fixed the bad road surface and ran it as a double loop of the first half of the course.

Good Times in Cheese Land

Good race, with good spectators and support. Unable to predict warm weather, the water stations were too far apart on the back half of the marathon. I was struggling and looking for water. I understand getting people to man the aid stations is a task. Next year maybe a couple of more aid stations for the marathoners would be in the cards. Overall, great job, Wisconsin!

Lots of water but slim on the Gatorade

The race was well organized. The course was congested until the 1/2 marathoners split off (at about 11 miles?). Many of those running the 1/2 and listening to headphones couldn't hear runners passing on one side or the other and would step in front of them. I'd like to see headphones banned. The problem wasn't nearly as bad after the 1/2ers split off. It was warm and humid. It seemed like most of the aid stations only had water and a few had Gatorade. Lots of crowd support from the U.S. Navy. The only beverages after the race were water and beer. I'd prefer a sports drink.

Fabulous!

Really enjoyed the race. This was my first marathon so I have no other benchmark. I liked that it was intimate without massive crowds because, as a first-timer, it was not intimidating. Great organization, easy parking, a beautiful (and flat) course along the lakefront, and I loved how the US Navy men and women were at every turn for encouragement. Will definitely do it again.

Fantastic Race - Flat, Pretty and Well Organized

I loved this race and thought the organization was well done and more than sufficient for the size of the field and its inaugural year. The course was a little loopy but I didn't find it confusing at all and I'd take loopy over hilly any day. This course had nice neighborhoods and the beautiful lake - and did I mention how flat it was? Having run 8 previous marathons, this was my first flat course - wow, how much easier it is to get a PR! I thought the race organizer did a great job. With the exception of the starting line porta-potty problem, I thought the aid stations were fine, the volunteers fantastic and the overall energy just great. I traveled from the Twin Cities for this race and got a $85 airfare on Midwest, a $26 car rental and a hotel for less than $100 - easy, easy, easy. Parking at the start was super easy and convenient. I didn't find the starting area too congested, and again, compared to some of the BIG-city races, this was was just so easy, calm and convenient! Maybe add pace bands at the "expo," but I think most know to bring their own for a race of this size. Congratulations to the organizers on a great race. I wish I could do it in 2010, but it didn't fit the schedule. I will definitely consider it in future years.

This was a nice race; things were well organized, especially for it being the first year. The only downside was the lack of porta-potties, and the line for getting the beer and brat afterwards was WAY too long. The race was flat and fast, and the weather was beautiful. Can't wait for this year!

First year marathon, some issues to fix

The course - even for being two separate out-and-back loops - had a lot to see, with lake views, parks, and nice neighborhoods. The volunteers at the water/HEED stops were friendly and efficient, and did a great job. The race course was almost 26.5-miles long, according to my GPS. The race also had promised Hammer Gels at mile 17, but there were none! The parking logistics of the downtown area were a bit confusing for out-of-town runners.

A nice race with few spectators

I thought the weather was perfect and the course was very scenic along Lake Michigan and through the residential neighborhoods. The aid stations were plentiful and the volunteers were great. It seemed like only a few people came to watch. Even through the residential neighborhoods, there were very few spectators. Driving from out of state (not neighboring Illinois), I would have preferred a race-day packet pickup. It seemed like a relatively long trek from the motels (I-94) so I wasn't early to begin with; but, since I wasn't sure if there was a bag drop-off, I left my warm clothes in my car. This turned out to be fine as I had to park 10 blocks from the start/finish area and got to the starting line only a couple minutes before the race actually started. It took me nearly 40 minutes after the race to walk back to my car and then drive back to my motel. A shuttle both ways might have been nice. All in all, this was a good race with a beautiful course.

Should be Called "Wisconsin Lakefront Marathon!!"

What a great first effort! My comments are based on running the half-marathon. I parked 3 blocks from the starting line. I walked to the starting corral 15 minutes prior to the race. The weather was perfect, which added to my enjoyment of the course. Within two minutes of the start there was enough spacing to find my stride. It seemed like 8 of the 13.1 miles were run along the Lake Michigan lakefront. On the first part of the course there were a number of inclines & declines that made the run a bit of a challenge. All of the water stops were well stocked and supported. Nice finish at a park along the lake. Great finisher's medal and tech shirt. Besides the usual post-run food, each runner was provided with a brat and a beer!! In regard to previous porta-potty complaints, I did not use one on the course. However, I did use one after the race and I am glad to report that they were clean and well stocked - clearly a rarity at this type of event. The crowd support was spotty, but that's to be expected at a small, first-time race. If you are looking for a smaller, well supported marathon, then this race should be considered. I suspect it will sell out rather quickly next year.

Fun first year race

Thanks to the race organizers and the city of Kenosha for a great marathon! There was very convenient race-day parking, and packet pick-up at Runner's Edge was a breeze. There were not enough porta-potties at the start, but I'm sure that will be corrected for next year's race. The double out-and-back course was very scenic, with views of the lakefront for much of the way. Aside from a couple of gradual inclines during the first half, the course was mostly flat. The "parade loop" in the beginning was distracting, and I heard a lot of runners griping about it. Thanks to all the volunteers and spectators for coming out on a beautiful Saturday morning; even some of the the motorcycle police officers were cheering on the runners! The HEED drink is receiving mixed reviews, in part because many runners are not used to it. I found it impossible to tell whether I was drinking water or HEED until I actually tasted it; having a flavored version would eliminate this problem. Smaller races like Kenosha have their own unique charm. I hope the Wisconsin Marathon becomes an annual spring tradition.

Great new spring marathon

This was my 4th marathon and first inaugural marathon. Most comments on other marathons say to stay away from inaugural marathons till they have time to work out the kinks. This one was too tempting to pass up as it was within easy driving distance, was when I wanted to run, and is basically run on a flat course. The only marathon that I have run that compares to this one in terms of size is the Bayshore in Traverse City, MI, which is almost universally lauded as a very well run race on a scenic course. This race seemed to be as well run as Bayshore and was almost as scenic. (It is only "almost as scenic" as Bayshore because Bayshore stays on the shore for longer distances.) Pros and cons of the race: Pros: Flat course with only one real hill around mile 7 or 8, but you are still fresh at this point (or should be); it's within easy driving distance from Chicago, a spring marathon, but not too early (you can still get a decent amount roadwork in at temps above 30); it has double out-and-back loops - I like them, as you get to see more runners this way. This allows you to see runners that are both ahead of you and behind you in addition to just those around you (which may not be many in a marathon of this size); they have free beer - after 26.2, having a cold one before noon does not seem wrong. Cons: They could do without the initial loop back to the start, but it is good for the spectators; gels were not available on the course, which is a problem, since they were advertised; spacing of aid stations on the back half seemed inconsistent (could have just been my perception as I was slowing down); and a section of the course on the first out-and-back had many potholes and bad footing. All in all, a very good race. Sure, some things can be improved, but this race should only get better.

Congatulations due for new race

For a first-year race, I think that congratulations are in order. The race was well organized and there was plenty of support directing runners. The spectators were scarce, but those that were there were great! On the negative side, a different sports drink would be nice and one was was not clear. On the mile 18 turnaround part, I saw several cars inter-mixed with the runners. One car was riding a two feet behind a runner, obviously upset. I suppose at this point we could probably have all of the runners on one side. Bands were advertised, but if they were there, I missed them. Same for gel. All in all, great job.

Great in some respects and not in others

A friend of mine didn't even have her time recorded at all. HEED IS AWFUL; I thought I was going to be sick. Not enough bathrooms before starting, or porta-potties. I didn't like the loop in the beginning. However I liked running to the lake and back. I did the half marathon, and I would definitely do it again. Maybe I'll do a full this time.

Very nice inaugural event

Overall, this was a very good race. I was surprised at how many spectators there were out on the course. The course itself was exactly as advertised, although a lot of my training runs were run on the course, so it wasn't as scenic during the race as it was in training. The only problems with the race were the number of porta-potties at the start, and I don't remember seeing any gels out on the course. There was also a last minute change to the course that threw some people off, but it wasn't a major problem. I am looking forward to running it again next year.

Very nice inaugural event with real promise

I really liked the lake-shore running, the city running, and the rural/suburban routes all mixed together in one course. Maybe a little too loopy at the start, but it wasn't bad. Overall flatness was appreciated, with just enough gentle rolling hills on the northern half to be interesting. Southern half was a little desolate; may want to import cheering groups or spectators down there for next year. Some kindly homeowners in Pleasant Prairie sat out on their lawns/driveways and cheered, beat on pots, or offered water - much appreciated. (One guy had a card table with little coffee shots - and unlike Kramer's marathon coffee, this wasn't hot!) Kenosha is a very pretty little city. My wife (a non-runner) appreciated the spectator-friendliness of the race: easy to see the finishers, roomy spaces in the park area, navigable parking. The race directors will have to consider how much they want to grow the event without making it over-sized and unfriendly. Contrary to other comments, I liked the HEED energy drink and will look for it at the running store. Gatorade often gets too sweetly-sickening for my palate and my stomach after Mile 20. Contrary to another runner's comment, I liked having a start without the national anthem. Enough with the überpatriotism; it's a race, for Pete's sake, not a shrine to nationalism! In agreement with some others' comments, the aid stations were not well spaced, some coming much too close to the others; I'm sure they'll figure this out next year. I also liked the medal and the whole cheesy theme. The volunteers' shirts were cooler (cheesier-yellow looking) than the racers' shirts. (A design suggestion for next year's shirt makers?) We never made it up north to the Mars Cheese Castle to buy some souvenir cheese, but if they'd had a booth at the finish area, we surely would have gotten some. (What else does one take home from Wisconsin?) I was surprised that so few people wore cheese hats at the start, and almost no one finished with one on. (I did!) I'm sure the organizers will get even more cheesy themes cooked up as the race gains momentum. The bananas in the finish area were too green to eat, though I tried; I'm sure Jonathon and crew got stuck with a ton of perfectly ripe bananas the day after the run. Another suggestion: have the Kenosha News publish more photos and cover the women athletes more; they focused too much on the men in the Sunday paper. Now that the city is becoming aware of what a cool deal it is to have a marathon run through town, I anticipate the local support will only grow from here. In sum, good effort for a first-time event. Will recommend to my friends. Thanks, Cheeseheads!

Beautiful course, great organization

A great race. My only comment would be that I didn't care for the Heed drink, and it was easy to grab it in error, thinking it was water because it is clear. Everything else was top-notch.

A good race with potenial to be great

I thought everything went VERY well for an inaugral race like this, with one glaring exception: I was one of those stuck in the long port-a-john lines at the race start. I started about 10 minutes after the gun. When I started they were already dismantling the start line. When I got to the first mile marker, I noticed that my GPS said I had only run half a mile. I thought they had just set it up incorrectly. But by the 3rd mile, I realized I must have missed part of the course. After the race, I was re-reading emails from the race director leading up to the race when I read about how they made a last-minute change to do an initial loop around the museums. That's where I missed a half-mile! This would have been prevented if they had had more port-a-johns at the start OR if they had better route markings.

good time, good folks, good course.

This was my 50th marathon overall and I had one of my better times, both speed- and quality-wise, with the good folks of Kenosha. The course was pretty, mostly very flat with no significant hills at all (and I live on the coast of NC). While I won't be back until I finish the 50 states in a year or so, I would be very happy to return for the run again in a year or two. You couldn't ask for more friendly, supportive people along the course. The volunteers were outstanding! The HEED was not so good though.

Potential to be a great race, just not there yet

Positives: Packet pickup was easy. There was ample and convenient parking. The weather was gorgeous, and starting right on the lake was awesome. It was a little cold at the start, but I appreciated the cool lake breeze as the race went on. The medal and the t-shirt are awesome (I think the medal might be one of my favorites). There were tons of post-race snacks, and I definitely enjoyed the free beer and brat! The people on the course were friendly and encouraging. Negatives: The HEED drink was vile. The lack of porta-potties was horrible. Thank God the park district bathrooms were open on the northern end of the course. Really, the aid station spacing was questionable - I didn't feel that there were enough. I thought the course was kind of boring, and so full of potholes it was ridiculous! I also didn't like that the course map did not accurately reflect the course we ran - it made it impossible for my poor boyfriend to find me on the course. (Actually, I spotted him, standing on his tiptoes, looking confused around mile 11). Also, the line for the brats and beer was kind of long, and I would have thought there would be more volunteers. Since it's only the first year, I am confident that it can only improve. While I did set a PR on this course, I think some improvements would need to be made before I go back. I did enjoy all of the little kids out cheering and high-fiving everyone out on the course - to them, we are Olympians. :)

Good Race but...

The medal was great and I liked the shirt. The worst part was the start. Get rid of the loops through downtown. I got stuck behind several people and the loops really slowed everyone down at the start. I didn't see any gel at Mile 17. Luckily I had my own. I liked the Heed, but I had trained with it before. With a few small changes this could be a great race.

Great first-year event

I thought this was a well organized event with a great location for a marathon. I think the organizers made some good choices and some bad, but all are things that can be improved. Host hotel: I stayed at the Harborside Hotel (not the host), and it was a 10-minute walk to the start. Runners would prefer this. Course: Another poster mentioned the loops, and I agree - there were too many, and they were a bit confusing. The north end of the course should loop through Carthage College. This would widen things up there. Going south, the course is nice, but desolate. I like running alone and didn't see this as a factor. Aid stations: odd spacing. Some were too close together, some were way too far apart. I hated the HEED, but understand that sponsorship deals are what they are. More should have been done to promote this in advance. Porta-potties at start: lines were crazy. I jogged to a local coffee shop with another runner prior to the start. Start area: too narrow. Should have used entire road. Timing: I would have like clocks on the course at every mile. It's a marathon, come on. Packet pick-up in Chicago: Bonus, thanks. Finish line: understated, but nice. I worried about the trolley, but it wasn't an issue. I would run this again.

Nice, first-time event

I thought the race organizers did a good job for a first race. The Wisconsin Marathon could become a destination race with a little more experience. The course is very scenic, but with all the turns at the beginning and the quick loop at the start, some kind of change will have to be made. On the north loop, running along the lake, one had to be very careful with the footing due to many filled potholes that made the surface extremely uneven. Some runners decided it would be safer to run on the hard sand next to the road! The volunteers were great, and Kenosha is a very pretty town.

weakly orchestrated inaugural event

Disappointing not to have any age-group awards. They even got my age group wrong, so I don't know if the posted age-group results are even accurate. No "as advertised" polka bands on the course, and only one at the finish. No "AA" sport gel on course. No cheese at the "AA" brat and cheese post-race party. Terrible pavement on the north segment of the course (traversed by both marathon and half-marathon runners). The goody bag had no goodies. Timing mats at 7.7 and 14 miles? I would skip this one for almost any other in the area.

A must-do for locals

I ran in the half-marathon. The course was well-marked and contained beautiful scenery. I read online that they were keeping it small due to it being the inaugural event, which I was fine with. The only downsides I saw were that they didn't have enough bathrooms, and the spacing of the aid stations was poor. For the first few miles they had plenty of water stations, but eventually there would be long stretches without any. I believe this was between the 6th-9th mile. I'd definitely recommend this for fellow Chicagoans that are looking to get away from the city without wanting to travel far.

Flat, Fun, Fairly Scenic, Few Complaints

This was a nice inaugural marathon. Good scenery along the lake, interspersed with neighborhoods and town segments. Great weather. OK crowd support considering the lack of tradition. Nice medal and shirt (but same for both marathon and half). Main complaints: no age group awards, no energy gel at mile 17 despite promises (mine was gone by then; I was counting on being replenished), advertised Gatorade was replaced by diluted Heed. But the positives greatly outweighed negatives.

Good race!

The race was great - I was enjoying running it and definitely will run it again! The only thing that I would recommend for them to address is the total absence of police in the southern tip of the course (miles 18-20). In this area the residents have started to drive on the road while the race was still on (in both directions)! I understand - there are no other roads in this area, so they had no choice. But several times I saw an older driver was driving her car just 2-3 feet behind an unsuspecting iPod-wearing runner - until other runners alerted the runner and she jumped in horror to the road's shoulder! It looked too me very dangerous.

Good inaugural race

For a first-time race, I'd have to say this was a good beginning. Pros: 1) Great email communication from the race director. 2) Nice medal and tech shirt. 3) Fairly decent course (not very hilly), and even with the multiple loops there was no confusion on where to go. Volunteers were at each turn. 4) Weather was decent (a little cool at the beginning and later, though it did warm up quickly, with very little shade on the course). 5) The host hotel was very kind in giving late checkout times to those of us needing a shower before a long drive and flight home. 6) There were several "split timing clocks" along the course. 7) There were plenty of support staff on bikes throughout the course, keeping a close watch on the athletes! 8) Water stops were well staffed by enthusiastic volunteers. 9) Traffic control was great. No issues whatsoever. Cons: 1) HEED is awful! I trained with it a couple of times, and didn't like it then; and it made my stomach hurt during the race. 2) Unusual location for timing mats (7.7 miles and 14)? 3) While parking was ample, it was several blocks from the finish. Pete, from Chicago, was kind enough to let me hitch a ride to my car. 4) Post-race food was not restricted at all! Nobody even asked for my ticket, to make certain that only runners were eating there. 5) The starting line was WAY TOO CROWDED! In order for everyone to activate their chip timing, we were all funneled into a very small archway. 6) The timing mat at mile 20 didn't record my time when I passed over it, so I had to turn around and do it again. Don't get me wrong - I enjoyed this race, but constructive criticism will only make this race even better. Thanks for a good weekend!

Decent inaugural race

What a beautiful day for a marathon! Weather was perfect. This was a very flat course with some looks at Lake Michigan. More porta-johns needed at start. Plenty of free parking available near the start. The opening loop was strange and confusing. The trip up north to Carthage College was the most scenic, as it ran through a lakefront park. The south side was just OK, along the side of a road with some minor traffic. I don't like out-and-back courses, where you look at the other runners on the other side of the street going the opposite direction, and this race had plenty of that. Offering a packet pickup in various locations the week prior to the race is a great idea; but the wait was 30 minutes at Runner's Edge in Libertyville, with only one volunteer working hard to stuff the bags and find the right bib. Two people were needed for this job. The race map and information stated that Hammer Gel to be provided at miles 17 and 20. None was provided. I asked the volunteers and they said, "They didn't bring us any." I had a few of my own, but not enough. I learned from the Chicago meltdown to be prepared with your own money to buy water/food if needed during a race, but there were no stores on this course. This is the first marathon (out of 24) that I have run that advertised they would provide a gel station late in the race and then did not. The course we ran didn't seem to match the course map that was provided.

Beautiful Course

I just completed this, my 39th, marathon. I was overly impressed with the organization, and considered about 70-75% of the course to be quite enjoyable and scenic. Running along the lakefront for the majority of the race was unusual but really nice, in my experience. This course is drafting board-flat and fast, ideal for running a PR. Plenty of water stops, though I would jettison the Heed sports drink. That stuff was horrible; kudos, however, for being willing to try something other than the usual sports drink. I liked the turns through the neighborhoods, but did not care so much for the long straightaways in the second half of the race, and I probably would take out the circle at the start. If, as I am confident will be the case, the race increases in size, that circle will become unmanageable. Just a tad bit about organization. I was able obtain my packet on race morning with ease. The guy next to me gave a curious story about how he was certain that his buddy had registered him - yeah, right. Yet, the guy from the race allowed him to pay on the spot. Talk about accommodating! The medals are top quality, both the medal itself and the ribbon. While I'd like something more than a clunk of metal cheese, I suspect others may appreciate the symbolism. Improvements: Throw in a turn or two on those long straightaways during the second half, going out, but not coming back. Ditch the Heed. And maybe this is due to my first-ever experience in having unrelenting sit-down nature calls, but more porta-johns at the start and on the course would be good. Spectators were, as is typically the case for a new race, wanting. Very few, except downtown. Not to worry. More will attend as the race grows in popularity, which it will. Overall, thumbs up. This will be one of my rare repeats. Maybe I will even PR the next time.

A good race spoiled by a poor "finish"

The race was well organized until towards the end. The race course was supposed to be open for 6.5 hours, BUT I finished in 6:09, and by mile 22, all of the mile markers were gone. By mile 23, there were no marshals at the intersections to indicate where the last few runners should go. The water stops were open, which at least indicated that one was on the correct route. It was advertised as a cheesy marathon; but where was the cheese at the end? They also need a new sports drink. The one they had was probably donated, and I know why. The course was good. Spectators were few, but my main gripe is the complete disregard for the slower runners who did finish under the 6.5-hour cutoff.

Strong freshman effort

Well organized first-time event. Great weather too. A couple of things that could be fixed: the course double-loops too many times. Going farther north to Cartharge College would have removed a U-turn. Going south, the dirt road where the course went into Illinois was uneven and gravel-laden. Aid stations were well stocked and had great volunteer support. A different sports drink is badly needed. Spacing of the aid stations was odd; some were way too close to each other and then there were some wide spaces at the far south end. Nice finish line, though I was 16th and wonder if the trolley affected slower runners. I would run this again.

Stunning lack of porta-potties

I had to stand in the porta-potty line for 40 minutes and was 10 minutes late starting the race. I am glad I wasn't trying for a PR in this race or that really would have been frustrating. Other than that, I thought it was a pretty good race. The course was pretty, and although there were not a lot of spectators, the ones that came out were really supportive. Some even set up water stops for the runners. The medal is awesome and the shirt is nice too. My husband said that he saw water stops being cleaned up when he could still see runners coming up to them, which he thought was unfair to the slower racers.

Debut marathon needs adjustments to be great

I selected to run this debut marathon because of its proximity to Chicago (an hour) and the timing (spring) worked well for me. The positives: I loved the packet pick up in the city the week before; nice tech shirt and finisher medal; good pre-race communication; the scenery running along Lake Michigan and through downtown and residential Kenosha is beautiful; perfect weather (50 to low 60s with a light breeze); and there were tons of great volunteers. The negatives: the course is overly complicated with a couple loops and a double out-and-back; the extra loop at the beginning was kind of ridiculous, as there were very few spectators out yet (at least one volunteer was confused by it and directed some half-marathoners on a different - wrong - route from the full marathoners, even before the first mile. Luckily that was the only incident of confusion I noticed, although there did seem to be lots of general chatter during the race about the confusing course. The best scenery is on the first (northern) half of the course. There were definitely no polka bands or cheer stations or cheese at the brat and cheese festival as advertised. The HEED energy drink along the course was awful. Was there even sugar in that? I'll never run another race with that stuff. At least 2/3 of the total participants were half-marathoners so the southern half of the course was pretty lonely for the marathoners. If you need crowd support, this is not your race. While there were definitely some nice locals cheering on their lawns, it was a quiet run. I suspect local crowd support will pick up in subsequent years. Overall, it was a good race debut and an enjoyable run. I'd come back and run the half marathon, but probably not the full.

Great, flat, scenic course

This race is perfect for any runner looking to run a race without the heavy crowds, and if you are in great shape, you could do a PR on this course. The second half is totally flat. Water stations are dependable and efficient, and traffic control was excellent. Post-race fun for spectators included brats, beer and a polka tent. This is a must-attend event for anyone from novices to speedsters looking for an early marathon or half.

Nice inaugural race, but I wish that...

Expo: could be bigger but packet pickup at the hotel was easy. Weather: mid 40s at start (7 a.m.) and mid 50s at finish (10:30 a.m.). A light headwind and a warm sun made things a little challenging, but none of this is within the RD's control. Parking: ample and not congested, probably due to the small size of the race. Timing chip: the adhesive on my new disposable chip (or shall I say timing band) didn't stick, so I had to hold it together with a safety pin. Not sure if it affected the timing pads since I didn't hear them going off when I pass them. Start area: there's no shelter at the start so getting there early and waiting outside could be a bit chilly for the runners. Maybe the public museums can open their doors offering restricted access to the runners before start? Long lines for the porta-potties. Course: a straight forward out-and-back and fairly flat course, except for two long, rolling hills (a mile each?) around mile 7-8. Plenty of aid stations stocked with water and Heed (I committed a racing cardinal sin by trying Heed, and fortunately it worked well for me - better than Gatorade or PowerAde, in my opinion). Mile marker are highly visible, which is good. Didn't see any gel at Mile 17. Not sure if I missed it or they ran out. The map in the packet was slightly off. I found out that the course was re-routed, re-measured and re-certified two days before the race. I don't recall that being communicated via email. Spectators didn't have the correct map, so they probably couldn't catch their runners at various spots on the course. Some of the dog owners in the neighborhoods should put their pets on leash. The dogs were running around at full speed and I worried about get knocked down by them (it happened to me once on a training run). Very few people were out watching the race even on a nice day. Finish area: fairly organized; food included apples, bananas, chips, water, and one free brats and beer. Volunteers: they were great. I really think that was the best part of the race. Now the wish list: Pace teams; announce any changes such as routes at packet pickup/start line; add more porta-potties at the start and on the course; add more food items, and let us have at least two brats and unlimited beer; use the regular chip to be green and avoid adding more trash; get someone to sing the National Anthem. This was a good experience for someone like me, who mostly cares about race times and food. I got a PR and want to send a big "thank you" to everyone who put it together! I'll mostly likely be back next year.
