the race director is very good at her job

I want to thank Jan Seely & her thousands of volunteers & sponsors for a wonderful marathon. I know that she didn't do it by herself & many people were involved. She goes above and beyond to have a wonderful marathon. The town of Champaign & Urban & surrounding area can be very thankful for Jan for putting on an a-1 marathon. I should know because I have ran 131 of them. You are not going to find a better marathon anywhere. I want to thank my new friend Ed on the incumbent bike & he was with me at around mile 17 or before. I also want to thank the lady on the bike & the woman who was in the van & later walked with me. The best moment of the day was when I entered the stadium & the crowd cheered me on & at the finish line was Jan Seely. Here was this woman been up at 3:00 am or 4:00 am but was standing there to put the medal around my neck. It still brings tears to my eyes. A job well done. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

Public Ivy U of I did an Ivy League marathon.

It was nice for a University of Illinois Class of 1981 graduate to return to the alma mater for the Illinois Marathon even though I just walked the half with both finishes in Memorial Stadium that will celebrate its 100th this year. The course is a good showcase of the University of Illinois campus & central IL.

Mostly flat until Mile 25.

This review will be divided into two sections...the Marathon Course itself and the Illinois Marathon Weekend. Marathon - I know many people say this race was flat, but honestly I have ran flatter courses (Chicagoland in Schaumburg and Run4Troops in Dubuque). The half marathon is definitely flat, but once you split up from the half marathoners there were a few tiny hills, but Mile 25 next to the golf course was a little brutal and I lost some time on that hill. Overall the first half of the marathon was very entertaining. I actually do think there were more musical acts then the Rock 'n Roll Marathon itself. You are running mostly through Urbana and the scene switches off consistently from town centers to residential to park trails. Hats off to the Navy ROTC which was ringing some bell at Mile 12. However, the 2nd half of the marathon was just residential and for people that need entertainment at their races then this was going to be brutal for you. You are mostly running through residencial neighborhoods. However, hats off to those people that live in those homes. A LOT of them came out and supported us. They were giving away Coors Light and other beers to the participants. If you are a weak hill runner like myself then be careful and be prepared for Mile 25. I was suprised by it and it slowed me down by at least 2 minutes. From there on...you can have a kick and finish fast all the way to the finish line if you still have it in you. Marathon Weekend : They also have the 10k, Marathon Relay, and the Half Marathon that Saturday. However, they do have a 5k on Friday night. That is pretty convenient if you have a child. My wife was able to do the 5k on Friday night while I was with my daughter. The expo seems like it was very legit. Many high profile speakers came and they had cool games and such. There was a lot of confusion on where to meet up with family members at the end. They need signs to tell us where to meet up with them. I couldn't find my wife after her 5k and we wasted like 20 minutes looking for each other. The 4 Mile Celebration and 27 Mile Celebration was cramped. I honestly think they should do it at the HUGE parking lot next to the street. Speaking of parking lots, there was PLENTY and FREE parking. Hotels will start spiking up their hotel rates by at least 30 to 40 dollars in one month so make sure you go on Priceline to book several months in advance. We stayed at Candlewood Suites for 70.00 and it was well worth it. It was clean, modern, and had a BIG fridge. Also....if you want to Carb up and if you need to be on a budget like myself (I come from a poor immigrant family)....there is a FAZOLIES in town!!! For 7 dollars you can get a good spaghetti meal. Finally...they will give you wooden chips at the expo to use around town. We did took advantage of it. We also realized that the list they gave us of businesses didn't have all them so if you go to places on Green Street and the surrounding area...ask if they take the wooden chips. We got a few great deals out of them. Champaign has several nice parks, museums (I am a history dork), and U of I is a beautiful campus. I would recommend a weekend trip here for sure. Everything is very economical (even gas so make sure you fill up before you head back to the Chicago area). Just make sure you book your hotel on Priceline once you realize you will do this race. You will save at least 30 to 40 dollars. That is at least 8 Subway Meals.

Great Course for Fast Times

This marathon greatly exceeded my expectations for what I was looking for in a marathon. I was looking for a marathon with a flat course and wasn't too crowded in order to run a PR and qualify for the Boston marathon. I was lucky enough to have great weather and run a really nice PR by a little over 5 minutes and easily secure my ticket to Boston. Pros: -Very flat course -Very well organized -Not overly crowded -Great communications by race directors -Easy parking day of right near the start/finish lines -Nice medal/shirt/blanket they give away Cons: -Champaign/Urbana isn't exactly a huge metropolitan area so it doesn't attract a huge fan contingent along the course Really I don't have much other than great things to say about this race. My wife is a U of I alumni and has been talking about running a marathon so I convinced her to sign up for this one for her marathon debut. I would recommend this race for a first timer or someone who has done 30 marathons.

One Big Happy Community

The biggest factor drawing me to this marathon was that the 50-States Marathon Club had a reunion run here, and I had not been to one of the quarterly reunion runs with the group for about 18 months - and I could drive here - in about 9 hours. For this marathon, the University of Illinois made a huge contribution - as did both communities. Urbana and Champaign are twin cities, side-by-side, with the University nestled in between, with a feel of one big community. The race organization brought both communities together, along with the University, to put on a spectacular event. For all the events they were hosting, they brought some 18,000 runners to town. Since I am focusing on the marathon part of that, there were 1,215 marathon runners - a small fraction of the total group. Hopefully, spreading the word about the excellent experience here will draw more marathoner runners in the future. Up front, plenty of information was available about the race, where to go - addresses, building designations or names, and where to park - for the expo and on race day morning. And from the time you arrived on campus, there were volunteers everywhere to help you - first with parking, then getting to the expo, and of course, where you could park race day morning. For packet pick-up, once inside the building, you were directed to one room where they assigned numbers and handed out bibs. Bibs were personalized with names, or nick-names - and they did it right there. I have never seen anything like this before. Then you progressed to the expo - a big room where you got your T-shirt and bag for s.w.a.g., and all kinds of organizations were represented there. There was a 'marathon store' at one end, but the rest of the room was mostly for folks trying to get information out about their specialty. Most were giving away stuff; some were trying to make a buck. It was a substantial expo. Race day morning the parking lots adjacent to the stadium and the start-line were open and parking was available very close to the center of activity. There was free coffee/tea, and Einstein bagels for pre-race food. The temperature was on the cool side before the sun was up probably in the 40's. So lots of runners were shedding warm-up clothes just before the start. Volunteers took these (then transported them to the post-race area for pick-up). The race started just after 7:00 a.m. with the wheel chair racers first. The runners were corralled by their projected finish time. Every couple of minutes they would release another wave. There were 8 corrals, and if you were in the back (like me), it seemed like 15 minutes before we got to run. I understand the reasons for doing this, but the clocks on the course are like 15 minutes off of chip time for those runners. We started down the main drag thru campus - with helicopters overhead and on live TV - then turned right and went through the town on Urbana, literally through downtown, and area neighborhoods. For the part through Urbana, the ½ marathoners with us. Returning to the campus, the ½ marathoners went left to their finish, and the marathoners turned right and headed through Champaign. Again, we got to see the town - and some very impressive homes. The course wound its way thru town then ended up bringing us into the football stadium, with the finish line out near the 50-yardline. It was spectacular. The only thing missing is that I did not have a football I was running with! These people did not leave anything to chance. There were perhaps 7 first-aid stations spread along the course. There were hydration stations every 2-3 miles, and they all had an abundance of friendly volunteers serving the runners. Some were stocked with gels too. And I think some friendly neighbors just set up their own table and served the runners as they saw fit. One guy was actually serving Moonshine! (Jan warned us!) There were course marshals too, then bikes patrols connected with runners thru the day too. There was usually a volunteer close by. And there were signs throughout the course too, keeping runners informed and on-track. Some of the mile markers were flags on a vertical pole, and they had a tendency to align with the wind, and sometimes you could run past them without even seeing them, if you were not watching closely. In the later part of the race (maybe in Champaign) they used rigid signs for mile-markers, and you could not miss seeing those. Throughout the race, law enforcement did a great job controlling the traffic and keeping the runners safe. I think Urbana closed their roads for the course, but Champaign used half of the road for runners and used the other lane for car traffic. In any case, it worked great, and there were not, to my knowledge, any safety issues. A couple of other comments: The weather forecast was for overcast skies and mid 50's. That is about as good as it can get for a marathon; not too hot, and not too cold. I did not see actuals, bit it felt pretty close to that. It was mostly clear at the start, and as the Sun was about to come out, it got cloudy. And it seemed to stay that way most of the morning. During sun-breaks, there seemed to be plenty of shade. Probably in the early afternoon the Sun did come out in force, but most everyone was finished by then and it never got hot. The wind was variable, but sometimes strong. After crossing the finish line, we received a medal, posed for a photo, got bottles of water and Muscle Milk (I needed Muscle Milk before the race!), then we headed up behind the bleachers and had hot food - pasta and pizza - bananas, granola bars, pretzels, and the like. RD Jan was available to runners before and after the race.

Fantastic and very well organized Marathon!

Just finished my 9th Illinois marathon and 400th marathon overall. Very well organized marathon and great weather for the marathon with just a little windy at times, but a dry marathon experience compared to years past. Love the marathon medal which celebrated University of Illinois 150th birthday, and there was even birthday cake out on the plaza to celebrate. Nice touch to get the blanket when you finish the marathon in the football stadium which makes for a great finish. Great race staff from the Directors, to volunteers, medical personnel, and police, etc.. I had a great time pacing the 4:30 group, and thanks to all the runners that ran with me - especially the first time 1/2 and full marathoners. Now I start looking forward to my 10th Illinois marathon next year.

Very nice marathon!

Although the wind absolutely sucked, the course was flat and the spectators were plentiful and enthusiastic. The organization for this race was as good as any I've seen. There was never any question as where to be at any time at both the expo and the race itself.

Nice Midwest Marathon

I have run this every year. Rained ALL day, but the free plastic poncho was perfect. Too much concrete at times. This is a very well organized race.

Yeah, the weather sucked. Besides that, great race! Amazing fans, fast course, great support! I almost never run races more than once, but I will be back to this one. Anyone trying quality for Boston, this is the course!

GOOD!!!

This was my 44th marathon and it was a good one. Sure it rained and the wind blew a bit, but top-notch organization. Great communication. Nice updated website. Flat and fast course and I'm sure there would have been more people cheering if the weather wasn't so darn nasty. Events for the entire family from youth run to marathon. Nice swag too; medals (very nice medals to include the challenge ones for completing multi events on Fri and Sat), fleece blanket, good shirts. Finish on the 50 yard line of Fighting Illini. Really good event. This staff is great. Keep it up. Looking forward to seeing date of next years race, so I can see if it fits into my schedule. WELL DONE.

Great race despite the weather

For the first time in the 7-year history of the race, we experienced bad weather. I was at mile 19 when police first drove by announcing through the speakers that the race was 'shut down' and to seek shelter. With the current culture's propensity for lawsuits, management made the correct choice. However, my group and I never did see lightning, and it even stopped raining once, so we kept going and finished. Some of the amazing volunteers kept working (including the finish line), and the rest left their water stands set up for self-service. Besides that weather-related negativity, the race was awesome. The chilly weather was actually great for keeping cool during the run. Flat course as always, and the 'hill' at mile 24-25 is negligible. The increase of fruit at water stations was great. Spectators (fewer than most years) and volunteers were wonderful too. Even some of the entertainment improvised, setting up under bridges and awnings to keep playing for us. Definitely a grade-A marathon for first-timers, PR's, or those with a connection to the community.

Mostly Flat & Great Support/Volunteers

I've ran the 1/2 marathon a couple times but this was my first at the Illinois full. This year's weather was not great besides the temperature (50 degrees) due to heavy rain & 20mph winds. They actually had to 'cancel' the races at 10:15am which left a number of runners on the course. They still finished on their own (without traffic control because of storms) but still were allowed to finish and get their medals. The course is mostly flat with some rolling inclines/declines and the biggest hill is at 24 when it feels much worse than what it really is. Volunteers were great and every turn was marked off really well with someone there. I've never had a marathon (#7 for me) where every single cop holding traffic gave words of encouragement! You start the race with the 1/2 racers and you split off around 12 miles before running with/past the 10K races (which start 42 min after the full). So it was nice to have a boost of runners around you through 18. After that, you are pretty much on your own as it does spread out then. Overall: fast course, those that are on the course are very supportive and encouraging (hardly anyone did not say something),nice medals and post-race food (pizza, pasta, pretzels, Gatorade, water, bananas...). They also have a convenient medal engraving booth that costs only $12-15 to engrave your medal on the spot in 30-45 minutes. The weather wasn't optimal this year but if you like very encouraging and supportive crowds, greenery, want to run a PR and don't mind running solo a little bit then this is the marathon for you!

A Fantastic Marathon Even with Cancellation

Let's start with the obvious. I know a lot will be made of canceling the race at the 4:00 mark. I was on the course at mile 21 when I heard the news. There was rain and thunder, and that alone would not have stopped the race. What I didn't know was the Storm Center based in Lincoln IL had warned the race directors DIRECTLY of a line of severe lightning that was heading straight for the race course. Had they left hundred of volunteers and thousands of runners unprotected against the elements, it may literally have resulted in people dying. No finish is worth that. Kudos to those who made the hard decision to cancel the race rather than risk the lives of the people left on the course. As to the race itself, few races enjoy more community support than the Illinois marathon. The whole town comes out to support this race. Further, every detail is considered. The expo and course literally overflow with signage and volunteers more than eager to help. The blooming trees and emerald green grass contrast dramatically with the well kept houses and make for a very scenic course. The finish on the 50 yard line of the UI campus (as I experienced it during the previous night's 5K) was super cool. A jumbotron projected images of every runner, and even a local TV station devoted hours of coverage to nothing but the marathon. The I-Challenge, which included a 5K Friday night, followed by a 10K, half, or full the next day gave out 3 awesome medals. Definitely a plus for medal chasers like me. The 5K is also VERY cool, and well worth arriving a day earlier to run. Really there is very little negative I have to say about this marathon, and I have run a lot of them. Well worth the couple hours drive from Chicago. Great job Illinois! I'll be back!

Well-run

This race is run very, very well: seamless packet pickup; organized parking at the expo and race start; and very good course support. Another nice touch is that the finisher medal and race shirt have a matching design. I also like the fleece blanket given at the finish line. Support from the local and university community is outstanding and enthusiastic. This year the marathon was cancelled mid-race due to bad weather. The directors and local law enforcement did a fantastic job of spreading the word and giving instructions to the runners on the course. Locals offered their garages to runners wanting protection from the weather. Props to the local and race officials for making the difficult decision to cancel the race in the name of safety. It was the right choice.

Tough Weather

Thank you to all the volunteers and staff for this race who worked tirelessly in some difficult conditions for the race. You are the race heroes!! This is my fourth year to run the half. It's a very well run event and while some will grumble about stopping the race because of a little lightning in the area, it was the right move. You would be the same people grumbling if someone would have gotten struck by lightning. Let's hope for better weather next year and we'll CU-there!

Best race in the midwest

I've run a few other courses, but none of them are as good as this one. Flat and fast is right. I've run the marathon once and the half marathon 3 times. I've made this a staple in my yearly training plan.

Outstanding Marathon!!

This is the 4th time I've run this marathon and I really have come to enjoy it a lot. It's very well organized and a very pleasant course. I'm puzzled by folks who say this course is not 'flat'...I suppose this is a measure of what you've run. The very minor grades on this course are actually a nice variation for the legs...but it's really flat. Further, I found the crowd support and interest over the whole course, second half included, to be terrific. Outside the Chicago Marathon, which is a huge event, this is the best support I've seen in a full marathon and this was #47 for me. The fact the course is in neighborhoods, not commercial/industrial areas, makes all the difference. I found these folks very encouraging and very plentiful. I too ran the Full I Challenge...the 5K on Friday night was a hoot. I've never run a 5K with 7,000 others!! It was fun to take a simple jog the night before a marathon. Hotels are full, indeed...I beat that by just taking my tent. There's a small campground in Mahomet, just 10 minutes from the race site and it worked wonderfully. One other fun fact...on race morning, they had a full 2 hours of radio broadcasts all about running. Hal Higdon was a major guest and it was so cool to drive in and wait in the parking lot listening to solid, well-considered discussion of running...that never happens on the radio but it does in this race!! Mega kudos to the organizers, this is an event that has grown wonderfully...it's been neat to be watch it grow.

A nice well organized race.

This is a well run race with a great finish. My only complaints are: relay runners finishing together getting in the way of marathoners, and concrete running surfaces.

Great race for Illinois!

I recommend this race...great option for Illinois. Pros: 1) Great neighborhood support. 2) Great volunteers. 3) Beautiful course. 4) Well staffed and stocked aid stations. 5) Nice medal and shirts were nicer than I expected. 6) Easy, organized packet pickup. 7) Lots of food and muscle milk after the marathon. 8) Plenty of convenient parking for the expo and race. 9) $5.00 gets you into activity center so you can use the pool after the race and shower...I sat in the pool for 20 minutes in lieu of my usual ice bath and it was cool enough to do the trick. 10) Awesome finish in stadium. 11) It was a hot day and they had hoses and misters. Cons: 1) More aid stations in a few places would be good given how hot the day of the marathon was this year. Note to racers: Book your hotel room VERY EARLY. I had to stay in Danville because everything was booked so soon. Also, I did the Full I-Challenge (ran 5K night before full marathon) and can say that the 5K was about the best I have EVER run. Finishes in the stadium and includes a nice shirt and medal...great support...really fun!

A well-run race, but not flat and few spectators

PROS: This was a well-run race from start to finish and I have no complaints about the organization. Everything was easy to get to, there was plenty of parking, the race started on time, the medals were pretty cool and the results were posted fast. CONS: I have to disagree, though, with anyone who says this is a flat and fast course. I have run a lot of marathons and would not put this one in the flat category. Chicago is flat. There aren't any big hills, as noted below, but it is rolling pretty much throughout with a lot of subtle inclines that are sustained for long stretches. Some of the hiller segments come late in the race when you're going through these quite, little neighborhoods and that can be tough mentally. As was also noted below, there is little crowd support and the course can get a little lonely in the later miles. That said, many of the residents come out and go to great lengths to support the runners, which I really appreciated. Also, the volunteers were great.

Nice Smaller Race

The towns of Champaign & Urbana seem to be surrounded by farm fields on all sides, so it's a scenic if somewhat uneventful drive from any direction. If you're thinking of running this one, get your hotel early because options seem to be limited. I signed up several months in advance and still ended up staying a half-hour from town. The expo was nice & packet pick-up was well-organized, but I wish it could've been held in a location other than the university's athletic complex. Traffic was very congested, and we had to park a long way away from the expo site. To reach the expo, we had to pass through a rec center where lots of students were exercising; directions to the expo were somewhat unclear. The race is held at a good time of year; weather was still fairly cool. The course has the potential to be quite fast. It was mostly very flat. We were packed in a bit too tight at the start. The entire race is on city streets, and the first half is run with the half-marathoners. After the midway point things get VERY quiet. The entire course is closed to traffic and all spectators are told to go to the stadium at the finish, so there are very few fans on the second half when you need the encouragement most. In fact, as you're running through the last few miles of residential neighborhoods, people are taking out their trash, watering their lawns, totally oblivious to the race. The finish at the stadium is cool, and the medals are nice. However, as others have noted, it is a burden climbing the stadium steps and fighting through crowds to get something to eat and drink after running 26 miles. I would rather finish on the street and have immediate access to amenities. Finishing on the 50 yard line is not that big of deal. Overall a nice race but I think some logistical changes need to be made before it can become a great one.

Pretty Good Spring Option

I went into this race (9th marathon) with a training plan to BQ and PR. I did not make either, mostly it just wasn't my day but the course was a bit more challenging than I had expected. There are a few stretches that are really long subtle grade increases that you feel in your legs. The one notable hill that I recall came at mile 24 which was really tough. The area was gorgeous in that section of the course but it's a tough spot to dig deep. Aid was great and plentiful to include several gel stations. There was definitely congestion in the park area (8-9.5ish) as others have described - hard to maintain your pace. I was a bit disappointed in the finish. It seemed somewhat empty with not many fans present. I only found this odd because I finished in under 4 hours. It seemed like all the excitement was focused more on the half, which was done at that point. Overall this race is well-run. The Expo was nice, the shirt was, well, BRIGHT, the pacers were good, the finish food was nothing exciting (but I don't run races for that) and the medal was fine! One note - book your hotel WELL in advance. If you are looking for a nice spring marathon for a great price, this is it!

My new favorite marathon!

I absolutely loved this race! It was incredibly well organized, had an interesting course (always something to look at), was a good size (not too crowded but you were never alone), and had amazing fan support! Every few blocks there would be volunteers or fans cheering for you. I ran the marathon in just under five hours and the fan support was still fabulous! From the moment I checked in at my hotel (workers were in marathon t-shirts) to the time I got into my car to come home, I felt very welcomed in Champaign. I will definitely run this one again. One last amazing thing: I handed my 'throw away' shirt to a volunteer at the two mile mark and it made it back to my gear check bag!

Fast course, GREAT organization

As others mentioned, this is a good-size race with terrific organization and course support. Parking right by the start/finish is non-issue. Long-sleeve shirt this year was in a highlight bright yellow. A bit too much. Would love to get one in U of I collors, but that's a small complain. The medal is nice. Food is sufficient.

Organized, flat marathon

This is a nice, well run marathon where a runner could certainly PR if the weather cooperates (it did in 2013). I usually avoid larger races like this one (1800 in full, 6200 in half and a 10k w/ a later start) but the logistics for this race made it feel easier like a smaller race. So you got the perks of a larger race like a bigger expo w/ race themed items; celebrities like Katherine Switzer, music on the course and good fan support. The race begins and ends on the U of Illinois campus (at the football stadium) and the expo is in their Rec center. All the parking lots used for a game makes parking super easy (and free). There were signs up directing runners to the lots. So the usual parking nightmares associated w/ a bigger race weren't an issue. The course as already stated is very flat but its not scenic. The route just weaves through a series of neighborhoods. Pleasant but monontonous. There were some rough roads while we were in the campus but otherwise the roads were fine. There is a 2 mile section from miles 8-10 where we run on a path through a park. Its pretty but the race is too big for such a small path. These miles were very congested especially with the Half marathon runners still in the pack. For a race this size there were not enough port-a-potties on the course. Even with 4 or more there were very long lines especially early in the race. There were plenty of water stops, they all had sports drink and quite a few had gel. My only critism here is the stops were disorganized and each one was different. Some times water was first, sometimes gatorade and the markings on the cup meant nothing. I know this sounds picky but late in a race when fatigue is an issue uniformity really helps. After the race I opted to use the showers at the Rec center. This was a nice perk! Also the race ends on the football field which is a fun ending! I liked the medal (of the stadium), the long sleeve tech shirt and we got a good quality gear bag.

Flat, wind can be an issue, well organised

At my pace, 3:20s, the field was crowded through Urbana until we split from the half. It then got lonesome for help cheating the wind heading back into Champaign. Thanks to all the great volunteers....I wasn't being rude just unable to speak ;)

Fast, flat course with good organization.

My 32nd marathon and enjoyed running this event. It's a fast course with really no challenging hills. A great deal of the course is on concrete roads though and my 55 year-old knees took a pounding. Good race support and organization and everyone in town was great.

flat, fast, well-organized

Not very scenic and the crowds are just average, but this was one of the best organized marathons I've ever participated in even with thousands of runners and multiple simultaneous events. The course is very flat and very fast. After running 50+ marathons I PRed by 8 minutes on this course. When I'm ready to attempt to qualify for Boston I'll come back here. Their 'challenge' races are also fun as I ran the 5k Friday night and the marathon Saturday morning for some nice medals.

Love it!

My comments are for the half only. I've run it the past two years. Great volunteers and crowd support. Organization is fantastic. No problems with the packet pickup, pre-race bag drop, parking or the race itself. Excellent street control. The whole area is 'in-tune' with the race and very supportive. The course is moderately fast with only some gentle up and down grades. There is a section in the first part of the race where you run through a park/bike/walking area for maybe a couple miles. Basically it's a double wide concrete sidewalk. It's crowded during the race and they won't be able to grow this race without addressing this issue and altering the course. Don't tell anyone how wonderful this race is as I want to come back again and again! Huge thank you's to all the volunteers and support folks that make this race go. Fantastic job.

Great race to qualify for Boston

I have run this marathon every year since its debut - it is a great marathon! Course is listed on the 'top ten' fastest for those looking to BQ. Course meanders through Urbana and Champaign (university campus towns about 2 hrs south of Chicago, IL). Best part: course includes well-spaced aid stations and Marathoners are offered 4 GU stops - this is amazing!! Strong crowd support throughout - which is great for this mid-size race. Event coordinators have made it a full 'weekend/family' event - with various race distances, pasta dinner and motivational speakers, and small race expo. Registration includes technical running shirts (first year was long sleeve, then went to short-sleeve, and now going back to long-sleeve) and nicer, heavy-weight medal. Post-race food spread has thinned down in the past few years - note that runners have to climb up a few stadium steps to get to the food. In summary, this marathon is awesome for the flat/fast course, generous race stations, great crowd support, and event-packed weekend schedule!

Fast, Flat, and Volunteers/Spectators = Rad Run

I have run this race twice, and I'll be back again. It's not the most scenic, and living in this town, I've run this route about a billion times in training for other marathons. I could probably hit each tangent in my sleep. However, there is really something awesome about race day in this town. The support for this race is unbelievable and rivals races I've run in larger cities. There is really no part of this race I've run where you feel like you are alone, and that is beyond cool. You do run through mostly residential areas, and there is a slight, and i do mean slight elevation change between 23-25 miles. I admit, it's a crappy place for any elevation change, but honestly, if you run any marathons anywhere else in the country... It's not even a hill. This is about the flattest course I've ever run. The last mile of this race is almost completely downhill and you finish on the 50 yard line of memorial stadium, which is pretty awesome. Your family and friends can't wait for you there, but they are up in the stands, which are alphabetized, so it's easy to find them. You can buy a shower pass to clean up in the locker room there at the rec center for $5, and that is super handy if you are from out of town or if you aren't, and just want to relax those muscles in a warm shower and then eat without having to go home first.

Great mid-size BQ race

Have run Boston Marathon twice and qualified again at Illinois Marathon. Course is nice: flat, residential, and amazing crowd support. The whole community seems to be very proud and enthusiastic supporters of this race. The weather was perfect for running: around 50 degrees and partly cloudy skies mostly. My only complaint would be the finishing food could be a little more imaginative than pizza and pasta.

Nice marathon through the city

Champaign puts on a nice event- flat course, plenty of turns. Everything starts and finishes at the area around the football stadium and the volunteers do a fine job. Important to get lodging early as everything was booked several months in advance and I had to stay 25 minutes from town.

Best volunteers!

This race had great volunteers! Marathon started on time and has the best finish (50 yard line of Memorial Stadium). Course wasn't too crowded. Brooks shirts were nice as well as the string bags - much better than the plastic bags from some other races. Good value considering the price compared with bigger races. Less fan support this year due to the damp, cool and windy weather - nice for runners, not so great for fans.

The one experience to top Boston!

Wonderful race! I ran the half last year and returned this year to race the full. Mike Almquist and the race director do a great job of organizing the race and providing good Elite support. I loved the course (even the slight elevation change between miles 24-25), and was able to enjoy the experience even more than last year. Twice the distance, twice the fun! We were blessed with a break in the weather and I was able to pull out a PR! Thanks to all who helped and I hope to C-U at the finish in years to come!

Nice course, well organized, awesome spectators

Packet pick up was quick and easy, and parking was readily available for both the race and the expo. The t-shirts are nice, I think you can see the women's from the moon, but I like having something I can feel safe running in at night. I liked the course, especially the run through the park. However, at the end, some of the residential curves probably added on a bit of distance if you weren't running the tangents perfectly. I think I got a little residential viewed out by the end, but I'm not sure what else they could do with it to add more variety. The only thing I can really complain about is that the mylars were all gone, and this was one of the few races where it was chilly enough that I was really looking forward to one. The volunteers and spectators were awesome! Water stops were plentiful, everyone was so positive and helpful, and I don't think I've ever heard 'looking strong' or 'you've got this' so many times in one race. I think it is a nice course, well organized, and a fun time!

GREAT SPECTATOR SUPPORT WITH STADIUM FINISH!

I was really impressed by all the spectator support (especially in the first half of the marathon). Tons of funny signs, music, and cheering. The community really supports the event. This was my favorite race so far. Well-organized and lots of fun. The only negative is that with a stadium finish, your friends and family can't be close enough to get a good picture of you (regulated to the stands). I would definitely recommend this race!

NOT enough well educated volunteers.

After asking two different people how to get to the food AND to the reunion area (neither of whom could help me) I figured it out for myself. They weren't rude, just had no clue how to answer my question. One of the volunteers even said that the reunion area wasn't set up alphabetically, when it clearly was! Also, there were some rude Urbana citizens along the route. Organizers need to be better about keeping frat boys from harassing runners verbally.

Forget Chicago - this is a great Illinois Marathon

Just completed the 2012 race and have nothing but positive comments about this marathon. This is absolutely a beginner friendly course and the volunteers/spectators were fantastic. Water stops were frequent and very organized with large signs telling you which table had water and which Gatorade. As a back of the pack marathoner I never felt alone as there was almost always someone within eyesight shouting encouragements and keeping traffic organized. Race expo is a little small and the t-shirt a bit bland, but lets face it we run this for the race NOT for fashionable outfits. This is definitely a top notch affair and I highly encourage anyone looking for an Illinois marathon to consider this gem. Thank you, thank you to the race organization for I had a great time. Bonus - I think Champaign Urbana might have some of THE nicest people around and the marathon medals this year were very cool!!

Fun Event

The Illinois Marathon is a very well organized event. The course is relatively flat with only gentle upgrades. You finish on the fifty yard line of the Fighting Illini football field which is very cool. As you enter the stadium you see the field, you on the jumbo tron and lots of people sitting in the stands. Very fun indeed. Only comment for improvement is they need more porta potties on the course. Much of the course is in-town, residential areas or open farm fields so it doesn't lend itself to woods diving for private time. Those porta potties on the course had five to ten people waiting to use them so it just kills your time when you have to wait that long. Other than that this is one terrific event. I'll be back for sure.

Really well organized

Nice job by all the volunteers and race director. Prior to selecting this race, I read the reviews, and it seems that all of the suggested improvements from the past were implemented this year. With the wave starts, the course never felt over crowded, and starting both races at the same time plus having a separate finish chute for the marathoners made for an easy finish. All aid stations were generously staffed despite the threat of cold, wind-driven rain by folks who were eager to assist. I think all of the stops along the second half of the marathon offerred both water and Gatorade, plus there were 4-5 opportunities for GUs. All of the many street crossings were manned, and traffic was never a concern. The only short coming was an inadequate supply of solar blankets, which were exhausted early on and made for a shivering post race walk back to the car. Thank goodness parking is plentiful enough that you can easily park within a 5 minute walk of the start and finish lines.

Great Local Race - Flat, Fast, Fun

This is my 9th marathon and 2nd Illinois Marathon. This is a really great local marathon and one that every midwestern marathoner should have on thier list. The town and organizers really take ownership of this race which makes all the difference in the world. If you are looking for a BQ or a PR this is your race!

Excellent flat course highly recommend

As this race grows in popularity the traffic to get to parking is going to be a problem!! I left the motel with what I thought was plenty of time to get parked but arrived just in time to start. Great race, great community support, great view, great ending. The wave start seemed to reduce start congestion. Next year I will give myself plenty of time to park.

Gets better every year

I've run the full marathon twice and the half marathon once. It's a very well organized race with great crowd support even over the last half of the marathon after the course splits. The aid stations are well stocked. The new wave start (2012) seemed to make big difference. The post race food is the best. The race T-shirts are ones I actually run in and the expo is great for this size of race. The weather can be a little windy but it's a flat course through the most scenic parts of Urbana and Champaign and there are plenty of breaks from any wind.

Great Course - finish not well thought out

This was my 4th marathon and I was pushing for a Boston BQ. I hit the time 3:08:59, but ended up falling short due to the new registration process for Boston by 13 seconds (needed to be 3:08:46). My major complaint was the merge of the marathon and half-marathoners into the same finish. My family did not see me finish due to the 3 hour 1/2 marathoners walking and jogging in (several drove over an hour and didn't see me until I walked into the stands). As the race merges I came to almost a stop from my 6:45 pace and had to coast in with a 9:00 pace (there was my 13 seconds I needed for Boston!!) In my opinion they need a running shoot for marathoners coming down into the stadium that seperates the marathoners and have a seperate finish for us, so families can find their runners easier. Overall it was a great experience, but I won't race it again until things are changed at the finish.

great experience for first marathon

I traveled from Alabama looking for a cool location that was flat for my first marathon. Overall I was very pleased with the experience. My race hotel was nice and catered to the runners. As an out of towner, I was not familiar with the area. The maps provided by the race committee were somewhat confusing but we eventually figured out where we needed to be. Parking was adequate at the race start/finish. Great stadium finish. My husband ran the friday night 5k and liked the finish and the food. Nice medals for 5k and marathon. Liked the early marathon start. My pace leader for 4:15 goal was just ok. The pace varied quite a bit throughout the race. She started with a group of 25 of us and less than half of that group ended up finishing with her. I finished 4:18 so I was at least able to keep her in sight most of the way. Two complaints. Getting out of the stadium was a bit confusing, particularly on friday night. Officials would not let family members leave via the same entrance as runners. We had to completely hike around the entire stadium to get out. Many exits were closed and blocked. Very frustrating. The female tech shirts for the marathon were very bland looking and the word 'marathon' was soooo small. My shirt is also cut uneven around the bottom edge it is shorter in the front than it is in the back and fits awkwardly. Other than that the experience was great!

Flat and windy; great community support

Very well organized with fantastic community and fan support. Course is flat, as expected, mostly through neighborhoods with a nice few mile stretch through a park in the first half. It was very windy this year. Temperature was reasonably cool, but holding it this late in the year is risky. Even this year, after 3 hours in, it was getting a bit warm. Race expo and pasta dinner were both good. I was running a 3:20 pace, until mile 20 anyway, and there were no tight spots in the park (which I'm sure there was in the much larger half-marathon). It's not the most scenic or interesting course, but the organization and fan support are great. The medal is ridiculously large; I'm surprised I was allowed to bring it on the plane home. I also find it too brightly colored, but others seem thrilled with it.

They have a 95% Solution

Overall a well done marathon. The volunteers and local community make this a race worthy of your consideration. I didn't run into the congestion in Meadowbrook that others have mentioned but it makes sense that the faster half-marathoners were catching up to the slower marathoners at that point in the course. The end of the race (in the stadium) is a complete disaster. Friends/family are not allowed on the field to cheer you on in the final moments. Like all stadium finishes you have to climb a flight of stairs to get to the food. By the time the marathoners are getting done the food is slim pickings and the lines are clogged with half-marathoners. Bag pick-up in the food area made for more frustrations/congestion. I think this marathon is almost there. The organizers need to focus on the Meadowbrook park issue. And they need to look hard at the logistics of the post-race food and checked bag pick-up. The course is flat with a slight hill at 24. A windy day in 2011 but I don't feel it had too much affect on my finishing time. Plenty of water/Gatorade and gels on the course. There are several hotels within walking distance of the start but I would book early!! If the race organizers put in place a plan to vastly improve the end of race issues I would consider returning to the race. But at this point, I will look elsewhere for my Spring marathon.

Flat, friendly marathon

First of all, this is a small-town marathon, so it will never have the crowd support of NYC, Boston, or Chicago. However, if you're ok with running a smaller marathon, I highly recommend this race. The course is FLAT and a great place to PR. I ran with a pace group the whole way and qualified for Boston. I ran the half marathon in 2009 and 2010 and did the full marathon this year in 2011. I've had great experiences every year. The weather this year was perfect - low 50s at the start and mid 60s at the finish. The half marathon is definitely the largest event, with only 3,000 marathoners and 7,000 half marathoners. This year the marathon started at 7 and the half marathon started at 7:30. As a marathoner, I appreciated starting before the half marathoners to avoid being cramped for the first 12 miles, but I understand that the faster half marathoners caught up with the slower marathoners around miles 6-7 on the narrow paths of the park, so I expect they will make changes regarding the marathon/half marathon start times next year. Course: The course is extremely flat, an excellent course for a PR. The parts through campus are really fun, and the residential neighborhoods are very pretty. Aid stations were every 1.5-2 miles, and there were 4 GU stations. Finishing in Memorial Stadium is awesome! Spectators: The volunteers/fans are very supportive and friendly. Many local residents set up mini aid/cheer stations in their driveways and handed out fruit and water. However, the spectators thin out through the neighborhoods in the later part of the course. There were runners around me the entire way, but it did thin out in the later miles. Pasta dinner: The pasta dinner was delicious and very reasonably priced at $12/ticket. They have great speakers at the pasta dinner every year. This year I got to hear running legend Frank Shorter speak. In past years I've met Bart Yasso and Dick Beardsley at the Illinois Marathon pasta dinners. Organization: The race weekend was a great experience. Race organizers sent monthly newsletters and posted weekly podcasts online answering runners questions. Runners/spectators got free bagels and coffee the morning of the race, which was a nice touch. I love that runners can use the Assembly Hall next to the start line to wait inside before the race and use real bathrooms (there were plenty of porta-potties outside too, though). The post-race shower pass was much appreciated.

Great Small Marathon

I had a great time at the Illinois Marathon. The course was nice and flat and finished in the Illini Stadium which was really cool. The organization was great and the town really seemed to embrace the event. If you are looking for a small spring marathon in the Midwest, I highly recommend this one. Only two very minor issues 1) more potties near the start line - the line was really long right before the full marathon start so people were freaking out and 2) the marathon relay runners were a problem at the end of the race - after running 26 hard miles and trying to finish strong, having to dodge team tye die giving each other high fives while still on the course was a bit of an annoyance. As the race evolves the organizers should think about doing away with the relay runners. All in all I hope this race continues to grow and thanks to those who obviously put a great deal of effort into organization and planning.

FLAT course, windy day, Great race!

Positives Great flat course that is somewhat scenic. If you like turns, this course has lots of them which did make running against the wind somewhat easier because there were not long stretches. Plenty of start line parking, especially for marathoners who had the earlier start Nice to open up assembly hall for warmth and bathrooms before race start Loved the separate start for marathoners to relieve congestions Pretty cool weather but VERY windy Great water stations and adequate crowd support Nice finishing in the stadium Negatives Long lines at pasta feed need more serving tables Expo was not exciting Finish line area very busy as fulls and halfs finished together separate chutes would've been preferred OVERALL, great race with only small complaints. This is a PR type of course if you hit nice weather, but beware of wind and consider running with a pace group to shield yourself. I did and ran a PR of sub 3:10!

Well Run, Fast Course - but Tough Wind

This was my first Illinois Marathon, and by far the most enjoyable of my 9 to date. Organizers ran a solid race. Crowd support was smallish, but very enthusiastic. Finishing in the stadium was great. Unlike the other 2 comments posted thus far, I really liked that the half marathoners started 30 minutes behind. I ran an even 8 min./mile pace, and never encountered the half marathoners, as the course splits at mile 11. I think on balance, starting the half marathoners 30 minutes back allows the faster marathoners to have a better start, and avoids the crowding at pinch points like Meadowbrook Park. Toughest part of the race this year was the wind - 30-40 mph at the end as we headed south. Otherwise, course was good, and the pacer I ran with (Rich) was fantastic. I'd recommend this race to anyone in the midwest looking for a fun, fast race.

Ran the Illinos Half; overall, a nice race

This was my first time running this race. I had planned to run the full but had to scale back to the half due to some injuries. I really like everything about the race except the different start times for full and half people. I really wanted to start with all my marathon friends and run part of the course with them. Fan support was AWESOME! I plan to return to do the full next year.

The support and organization of this marathon makes it my favorite marathon to date: incredibly flat; lots of turns to make it interesting; plenty of aid at stations; wonderful all around. My only suggestion is to keep your eye on the road... Champaign needs some better road work.

Fast, flat course- great race to PR!

This race is incredibly well organized. Champaign/Urbana residents are SO nice and helpful and really get into the weekend marathon events. There are so many smiling volunteers, and it seems like the whole town comes out to cheer for the runners. Many spectators set up their own water/candy/fruit stations in their driveways. The course is VERY flat and a wonderful place to PR. I highly recommend this marathon for runners trying to qualify for Boston. Although other races like Chicago are also flat, Champaign is nice since it's flat and not as crowded as bigger races. There's still plenty of runners around you, and I was never by myself at any point during the race. It was so nice not to be tripping over other runners and getting slowed down at the start by trying to fight the crowds. There were plenty of water/gatorade stations (every 1.5-2 miles or so), 4 GU stations, and many bands on the course. The weather for the 2011 race was great- low 50s at the start and mid 60s at the finish. They have lots of pace teams, and I was able to qualify for Boston and PR by 17 minutes! Also, there are plenty of bathrooms at this race! Before the race, runners can use the university basketball arena at the start line to get out of the cold and use real bathrooms, not porta-potties. There were also plenty of porta-potties by the start line and along the course. The race was very runner&spectator friendly. Runners and spectators received free bagels and coffee on the morning of the race, which was a nice touch. And since the crowds aren't crazy like larger marathons, I had no problem seeing my family&friends at 5-6 points during the race, whereas at larger races it can be hard to spot people in the crowds. The expo was beautifully done, and runners got a nice technical shirt. The pasta dinner was excellent and very reasonably priced at $12/ticket, plus I got to hear Frank Shorter speak at the dinner, which was awesome. Finishing in Memorial stadium and hearing my name announced over the loudspeakers as I ran through the stadium was very exciting. Plus, runners can shower and change at the gym next to the finish line, which was great. Overall, I can't say enough good things about this race! I will definitely do it again!

A well-organized and fun Midwest marathon.

This was my second Illinois Marathon and it did not disappoint. The Champaign-Urbana communities are highly supportive and the RD stages a well organized and competitive running event. The logistics are easy and straightforward, volunteers are helpful and race day resources are plentiful and well stocked. The decision to hold separate starts for the marathon and half marathon was great and greatly improved the start congestion from 2010. And the earlier start for the marathon was right on. Thanks C-U and I'll see you again next year.

Well done, again!

I ran this race in 2009 and again this year, and I highly recommend it. There were some course changes from the inaugural race, and I think it worked out very well. It's a flat and fast course. The hotels do not gouge you, and EVERYONE I spoke to was cheerful and interested in making sure it was a good experience for the runners. As a back or the packer, I appreciated that there was no shortage of fluids or support at the end. The ability to take post-race showers at the ARC was very convenient. Everything from the expo to the finish line celebration was well organized. I will be back.

Great Marathon...

Great marathon. However, they need a different solution for the half marathoners! I felt so bad for the faster ones catching up to us while we were on a part of the course that is congested with just the marathoners and relayers. Starting together is a better solution than this - at least people are with others of their same pace, not running upon those of us running much slower. Still, a great race for the marathoners; it was well organized, FLAT (though windy this year), and fun. The only other thing I would like, if they will not move the race back to earlier in April like the inaugural year, is if they would start the marathon an hour earlier to escape the later heat we have had in two recent years. I would still run again.

Could be great with some improvements

I will readily admit that I am a back-of-the-pack marathoner. I really like the fact that they keep the finish line open, while being nice to the people of Champaign by not keeping the roads closed for just a few of the slower runners. One change that was made to the race organization was to move the start time for the half marathon to 30 minutes after the start of the marathon. This created a problem for the slow marathon runners, as we found ourselves in a traffic jam at Meadowbrook Park, one of the tightest areas of the race course. Perhaps reversing the Urbana loop of the course (like they apparently did with the course in 2009) would correct that, as this would place Meadowbrook earlier on the marathon route, with the slow marathoners avoiding much of the half marathon traffic until after this point. As far as the fans are concerned, they were some of the most enthusiastic fans (and I'll include the volunteers in this as well) that I have ever seen in an endurance race. I will also give a good point to the marathon committee for moving the 5K to Friday night, allowing for a special medal in the I-Challenge, for running the 5K on Friday and either the half or full marathon on Saturday. Overall, a great race for those interested in running a marathon in Illinois.

It is what it is.

Ran the half in '09, the full in '10. All in all, I thought the directors did a nice job addressing the issues for the inaugural race. Course: Pretty flat course with no real surprises. C/U is a typical Midwestern university town. It's pretty non-descript; not overly scenic but no blighted areas either. It is what it is - hardly the most memorable course you'll ever run. The finish inside Memorial Stadium is a nice perk, though. As others have mentioned, the part through Meadowbrook Park is very cramped and tight as it's relatively early in the race. If they plan on expanding participation in the future, they should consider reworking the course so that the park comes into play later in the race. Organization: Smooth process in picking up the race packet. However, I wish there were more vendors there. The only running store represented was the local outfit. It's a good store but it would have been nice to have had more choices. I didn't mind that they started the half and full after the 5K. Allowed the 5K people to clear out of the finishing area and parking lots sooner. They just miscalculated the time. Rather than starting the full 30 minutes later and then delaying 15 more minutes, just announce you're starting the full 45 minutes later. The one item I do believe they fell down on was the placement of early water stops. It was a humid day and the early stops needed to be well-manned and begin very early in the race. Neither was the case. The first stop was a bit over 2 miles in and it was poorly staffed, resulting in the stop quickly becoming overwhelmed. Meanwhile, later in the race, there were stops manned by some very energetic and involved folks. They should have been at the early stops where volume was highest. Also, the first stop should have been about a mile into the race to begin the in-race hydration process sooner. Spectators: Here's where C/U "gets it." The town understands there are many people coming in from out of town - staying in their hotels, eating at their restaurants, leaving dollars with their merchants - to run this race. The locals seems genuinely happy and excited about the race and fan support was solid throughout the course, with the possible exception of the park areas, which didn't have easy access for spectators. Even the college students offered decent support along the way (traditionally, college students in general aren't that jazzed to spend their Saturday morning watching a race). Nice job by the fans and residents of creating a positive environment. This has the makings of becoming a solid fixture on the spring Midwestern marathon calendar. If they decide to grow the race, they should change the course; but at its current size, it works.

2009 > 2010, but I'm still holding out for 2011

I'm a University of Illinois student, and I was stoked for the event in 2009. It was my very first-ever race, and it went off so amazingly that I could not wait until 2010. The 2009 weather was perfect: sunny but cool and just breezy enough. There were some port-a-potty snafus, and the half marathon turnoff was a bit weird, but both of those issues were corrected for this year. In 2010, it rained until about 4:30/5 a.m. the morning of the race, and then the sun came out in full force. As a result, the day was muggy, humid, and is the very weather that makes me want to leave the state for good. It was a terrible day to run, and I don't think that the race directors were quite ready for that in terms of hydration or otherwise. The crowds at the beginning this year were bad (though word has it the 5K this year is going to be the night before the marathon, which is GOOD!). The race start just did not seem as organized this year. A 5K went ahead of everyone else, and that caused the marathon to start a bit later than scheduled. With the humidity rising that was a very bad thing. I realize there were a lot more people but surely this could have been worked out somehow. On aid stations: Why was there no more water when I got to the first one!? Additionally, I really, really wish aid stations had been increased to every mile at around the halfway mark. Miles 17-20 were largely in the sun, and much needed hydration was not present. The people at the aid stations were great, but I wish there had been more towards the end! On the finishing area: The medals this year just were not as cool. They were sort of ho-hum. Also, I wish that the food at the finish line had NOT been up a hundred stairs. I am convinced that whoever did that is a masochist, because making a long climb for cold pizza is about the last thing you want to do at the end of a marathon. Now that I've griped, I should mention the good points: There are VERY few portions of the race where there isn't somebody cheering for you, and I think the volunteers and community support are the very best thing about this race. It most definitely showcases the personality of people in Central Illinois. A lot of the race either goes through the UIUC campus (with a lot of students to cheer you on), or it goes through residential areas where the townspeople love to go sit in their front yards and make noise for the runners, which I find so helpful (though I must say I'm still a little baffled as to why so many people in Champaign-Urbana have cowbells lying around their houses...). The crowd support both years has been absolutely phenomenal. This year, when I felt like I was about ready to quit, some guy (who, bless his heart, was spraying us runners with a hose from his front yard) saw my Cubs hat and said, "You're almost there! Cubs fans never give up!" A LOT of people got their hoses out for the runners, which I find to be very touching. Anyhow, had the race been 2-3 weeks earlier in April like 2009, I think we would have all been perfectly okay. In Illinois, pretty much as soon as May hits you can never be too sure whether or not you're going to be baking on a given day, so scheduling it May 1st was not a good call. The race is in late April for 2011 (essentially the same weekend as 2010), and after 2010 I am very apprehensive about doing it again, but I'll give it one more go in hopes that my memories from 2009 will be restored.

Significantly worse than last year...

This was my 21st marathon. I ran last year, and it was the best organized marathon I had ever run. This year, it was not nearly as good. First off, the date change: It was perfect in April; why move it to May? The fluids weren't as adequate, there were far fewer porta-johns, and the race STARTED LATE. Many other things made me regret the effort of coming up too, which is something I seldom say about a marathon. It wasn't an awful race, and perhaps if last year hadn't been so good I'd not have judged it so harshly, expectations and all. However, I will say I would not run Illinois again based on the 2010 race, despite checking it in my mind as an every-year race last year. However, if they move the race back to April, I will give it a chance because of the memory of 2009 and the hope that they will return back to that! (Also, the half marathon is NOT the marathon. So look at the reviews of the marathoners, not just those who run the half, and you'll see a pattern I think.)

Fabulous

I have run this marathon twice now and I thought the new course outline was so much better than last year's course. Unlike many, I'm happy the marathon got moved back a month and I think it was just a fluke that it was humid. I agree about the bottleneck in Meadowbrook Park - maybe only the full marathoners should run through it?? Finishing in Memorial Stadium is awesome!! It would be helpful to have runner tracking via the web or text messaging, especially because the marathon started late this year and some of my friends' families totally missed them running because they didn't know about the late start. Overall, this is a great marathon for both experienced and new runners, and it's amazingly well run for only its second year in operation!!

Damn, it was hot and humid in 2010

I had run this race in 2009, and because it is flat and fast, I wanted to do it again. The guest speakers were great at the pasta dinner. The only problem was the weather, and the RD can't control that. It rained the night before, so it was humid and muggy at the start - and it then got sunny and even more humid. The only complaint I have is that they changed the type of medal from 2009. Last year they had a little spinner shaped like the state of Illinois (very cool), whereas this year the entire medal was shaped like the state of Illinois without a spinner. Sounds petty, but the 2009 medal was very cool. There were pizza and pasta and all sorts of food after the race that one could refuel on. Two GU stations along the course as well as water/Gatorade stops about every 2 miles, so there was plenty of hydration, and we needed it. I enjoy this course because it is as flat as Chicago with about 38,000 fewer runners.

This was a great marathon experience.

For a race that is only in its second year, the organizers should be credited with putting together an outstanding event. It already enjoys great community support and many friendly people. I plan to return next year but would like to see just a few minor changes: 1. Please do a much better job of ensuring that half marathon walkers are positioned in the rear of the pack at the start line. Far too many of them were up near the front and caused a great deal of unnecessary congestion and slow starts for marathoners looking for a PR or Boston qualifier. 2. Consider holding the 5K about 30 minutes later than the half and the marathon to eliminate congestion at the start area. 3. A few race clocks at specific mile markers would be much appreciated. 4. Stadium finish was great but consider having the family reunion area and post-race food on the same side of the stadium. 5. How about a return to an early- or mid-April event date? Great race; friendly people. I'll be there next year.

Great Race - Good Size - Keep it Small

The first water stop was out of water when I got there with the 3:45 pace group. Could have used more water hoses/spray/spritzers on the warm day. Otherwise, the course was great, and the volunteers awesome. The finish area was terrible... no cold drinks, a walk up the steps to the food, and i couldn't go back across the field to meet my family until I finished my food... so I just left it behind.

Great Marathon! Flat Course. Fun City.

Positives: Very fast and flat course. Tons of very enthusiastic spectators. The volunteers were wonderful. I loved finishing in the stadium. Cons: I missed the first water stop completely because no one was handing out water. It was just sitting on the table. But every stop after that was well marked and accessible. Gatorade should be available at every water stop. Post-race food and beverage were sorely lacking. No cold drinks available. If they could move this race back a month, it would be perfect. It was too hot and too humid, but I PR'd and got a BQ. I would definitely run this race again!

Poorly organized in terms of volunteers & fluids

I ran the half marathon last year and the full this year, and I did notice some good changes - such as the set-up of porta-potties in start area. There were NO fluids available at the first water stop (I ran with the 4:10 pace group), and no Gatorade until Mile 7. Mile 7 is way too late in the race for mid-to-back-of-the-pack runners. That is the equivalent of making faster runners wait until Mile 14. I had to wait for drinks to be poured at several water stops and eventually had to accompany a friend (who was dehydrated) in an ambulance to the hospital. The management of the water stops was poor during the first half, although I was told things improved the second half. This was too late for my friend - he only made it to Mile 13. (He was released after 3 hours.) Given the warm and humid conditions, which can certainly happen in May, when runners have not had time to acclimate, the handling of the fluid situation was not good and potentially dangerous for runners.

Excellent Half Marathon

This was my first half marathon and I was very pleased! I have run shorter races - 5K and 10K - but this race tops any of those on organization. There were a couple of things I would like to see changed for next year. First, get the walkers out of the way of people who want to run. Second, find a different/wider path than running through the park. Finally, is there a way to run some of the race on asphalt? The concrete got to be brutal on my feet.

Spectators great - course not so much

Overall, a good race and the finish in Memorial Stadium is nice. I lost quite a bit of time running on the sidewalk path in the park; I recommend a different route. Post-race food was OK; all of the post-race drinks were warm, which is not OK.

Very nice race in all areas!

A few minor issues to improve upon, but overall, a nice race that is worth repeating! The negatives (all minor): The race started 15 minutes late, which threw off the spectators who expected people at certain places and times; there was no Gatorade at the first few water stops (on a hot/humid day); post-race food was at the top of the stadium steps (after running a marathon!); and there was poor security for the kids' run. The positives: very good course and overall organization; great crowd support; and a great idea worth repeating with the kids' run and other post-race activities. The race director seemed to listen to MarathonGuide runner comments from last year. A few more tweaks, and year number 3 will be outstanding.

Impressive for a 2nd-year marathon!

My husband ran the half and I ran the full, and it was hard NOT to switch races at the split with the humidity!!! The volunteers were the heart of this race, and those cheering were a wonderful motivator! The course had more of an incline than I expected, but I thought the organization was great for a 2nd-year marathon. I enjoyed the water stop with the "hippy" volunteers, and I encourage you to run this race before it gets as large as the Chicago Marathon! I would suggest that transportation be provided to those parked in the lots farther away from the stadium. After running 26.2 miles, I was GRATEFUL for Eileen (a volunteer), who dropped us off at our car. Again, the volunteers were amazing!

Well Organized, Runner Supported

This marathon was about my sixth one in about 10 weeks, and the best organized of them all. I ran it because of the excellent '09 posted reviews - and 2010 was better yet. Plentiful aid stations, gels, medical support, and volunteers. The stadium finish was special. It seemed like most of the course was through scenic neighborhoods. That beats the endless, tired, concrete roads of the business districts. The post-race pasta and pizza were so appreciated and needed. I would recommend this race to first-timers who need a memorable experience and also to the veteran runner who desires a kind, honest, and generous race director and staff. This organization is a model for any of the worn out, same-old, same-olds that simply understand neither the runner's needs nor how to organize. Thanks to so many volunteers, friendly spectators, and the race director. I may be back with more runners.

The half marathon was OK - not as flat as I hoped

I had to wait for water to be poured on the very first stop. I don't know if running through that park was such a great idea for the number of participants! MANY runners stopped without regard to the person RIGHT behind him/her! Both of these cost several of us precious minutes. I enjoyed the stadium finish but had to watch the uneven pavement to prevent myself from falling. I may try again next year IF the course is out of the park into streets - the park was TOO crowded.

Fantastic and memorable experience

I am a local and have never run even a 5K. I wanted to be part of this great event, and the sheer enjoyment of going through all of the local streets and being cheered by everyone helped me complete the full marathon. Excellent organization, plenty of volunteers who are the true heroes of this event, and a great finish. I am so proud of belonging to CU.

Second-year marathon, but first-rate!

It is hard to believe this event is only in its second year. My training partners and I were looking for a flatter marathon (after running the Cincinnati Flying Pig the past two years). The course lived up to its "flat" reputation, but the humidity played havoc on the "fast" claim (at least for me). A few more slight uphills might have saved my quads and my P.R. I definitely recommend this race and hope to run the Illinois Marathon again soon.

Enjoyable Event

I've run this marathon now for both years it was offered. The organizers did a nice job modifying the course for 2010. By extending it, the last 2 miles were much more pleasing to the eye and the psyche. Whereas in 2009 we got near the stadium and then had to loop for 3 more miles, this year we just ran to the stadium with no interruption. It really helped. My only suggestion on the course is about the 1.5 miles or so in Meadowbrook Park. It's a darn shame that the path is so narrow. Even though the RD moved that part of the course from mile 5 to mile 8 this year, it was still much too crowded there with all of the halfers and full marathoners together. It is a pretty park and would be nice to include... but it's just too narrow to enjoy running on in that crowd. For what it's worth, this runner liked the April date of 2009 rather than the May date of 2010. It was unfortunately warm and humid this year. Emergency personnel did a terrific job but had their hands full, from my view. Mega congrats to the volunteers... they really made the race go and go well. Thanks for a nice event!

Nice, flat course with lots of crowd support.

This was my first time running this marathon. The course is flat and fast, as advertised. It was a bit boring at times, with little remarkable scenery. The race organization was pretty good. My major complaints involve the race beverages and lack of clocks at mile markers. It was a warm day with 88% humidity, and no beverages - either along the course or at the finish line - were cold. Everything was luke warm... gross! Additionally, the post-race food left much to be desired, and the post-race "bash" was extremely lame. I did love the stadium finish and the crowd support! So many people came out to watch in these small towns! The race organizers do need to get clocks at every mile marker for the future. I don't know if I will return to this race. There are plenty of other flat, fast courses with good crowd support and COLD beverages.

I did it but I'm not coming back.

Nice course with lots of crowd support. Weak expo. Finishing in the stadium was great, but then having to climb stairs to get to the food (which was cold and nasty by the time I got there) was ridiculous. Also, bikers along route refused - on two occasions - to help people. What was that all about? One guy said he had run this course 10 times and knew it was an easy one. The after party was a bust, so why not have everything at the stadium?

Move it back to April

I ran last year and this year. I was worried as soon as I saw the 2010 date posted, and sure enough, it was warm and humid. Bad decision by the organizers to move it back two weeks, plus the first weekend in May conflicts with the Lake Run just down the road. And what was with not giving out water at the water station at Mile 2? Not hot and humid enough? Thanks for moving the course so we didn't get congested in the park like last year. A great race and course, but I'm just not sure I'll come back if it's in May again.

Great Race, though not as Fast or Flat as in 2009

Great job with the organization and crowd support throughout the race. The post-race food and drink were awesome! I ran the half-marathon this year, but compared to last year, the full-marathon seemed much easier. From miles 6 - 10, the course was more challenging - running the reverse direction, with more steady uphills compared to 2009. If possible for the future, I suggest repeating the course from 2009. The weather can't be controlled, but the course can be made faster and flatter, like in 2009.

Great support, flat course

I did the half last year and the full this year. There were plenty of spectators, volunteers, medical personnel, etc., even after four hours; and there was plenty of water and Gatorade at stops. The course was very flat and through a lot of neighborhoods (sometimes a bit twisty). I love the shirts - not the typical, oversized, unisex ones you see at other races. The finish is the best part, through the stadium. This year was better than last; we were able to run right through the stadium - no winding around the stadium or on the field. I would highly recommend this race!

Great event, volunteers and community

This is a great marathon with an excellent organization. Volunteers and community support are outstanding. The course is nice and diverse. Finishing in the stadium is fabulous. I would do it again. I would modify the section on the narrow trail (could be used later in the marathon when there are less people) and try to do a better job at evenly spacing water stops (every 2 miles).

ONE FANTASTIC RACE

I have run over 50 full and half marathons and this one ranks near or at the top of the list. The course was flat and fast, and spectators were everywhere. The support staff were super enthusiastic. The expo seemed a bit on the small side for a race this large, but the medal and shirt were very nice. The only real downside was getting back to our hotel after the race. The traffic was pretty bad. Perhaps they should consider buses. Finishing on the 50-yard line was also a nice touch. All of the people involved in the race, and the spectators seemed like the happiest people on earth. Perhaps they'd just left Disney World. Do this race. It is impossible not to like it. You will not go wrong doing this race.

Awesome Support from Volunteers and Community

Well organized event with multiple races. Logistics, expo, parking, start/finish line access, etc. were all very good. The stadium finish is a blast! You can collapse in the seats before attempting the walk up the stairs for the post-race food. The best part was the support received all along the course. I can't say enough good things about the staff, volunteers, community officials and members. As a back-of-the-packer who completed the full marathon, I was continually impressed and grateful for the helpfulness, encouragement and friendliness of all of the local officials and volunteers who directed our way, controlled traffic, and/or gave us refreshment - even after being at their jobs for a LONG time. And the support, cheers and entertainment from the community members whose neighborhoods we invaded was truly inspiring.

Overall, pretty darn good

After running several hilly marathons in a row, I really liked this course... a good scenic tour of Champaign and Urbana, mostly flat except for a few short gentle inclines, and one long but gentle grade at mile 24 (but then you are immediately rewarded with a nice long downhill at mile 25 into the home stretch). I was genuinely impressed with the volunteers and crowd support for this race. Much of the course is along residential streets, which can be very hit-or-miss for spectators. But all along the route there were ordinary folks sitting at the end of their driveways cheering and running homemade aid stations. CU as a town seems to really be behind this marathon, and that's great to see. Big thumbs up all around. My two minor gripes are time-related. 1. This race should really be run earlier in the year. It looks like this race was held in early April in '09, so I'm not sure why it was moved a full three weeks later; it looks like it was the difference between a perfect morning in the 40s and a muggy, humid day in the 60s/70s. Any time you get to May in the Midwest, the weather is a roll of the dice. At least the thunderstorms moved off in time. 2. It's great to see a race that tries to incorporate all distances on the same day, but either start the 5K AFTER the full/half (instead of before) and have them come in the stadium from a different direction or have it a day earlier. It was at least cloudy at the start, but on a different day it would have been frustrating watching the sun climb in the sky on a warm morning while I stood around, waiting for a bunch of people who were going to be done with their race hours before me anyway. Also, the barricades separating the half and full at the end are very much appreciated, but I still just about plowed into the back of a bunch of walkers from the half who suddenly decided they needed to do the last 50 yards five abreast. Abrupt lateral movement 26.15 miles into a marathon is not one of my best skills! Not sure what could be done other than barricading them off all the way to the finish, but it would be nice if walkers would realize they're not the only ones out there. Might as well wish for a Ferrari while I'm at it. All in all, though, this is a great race that's doing a very solid job in only its second year.

Overall, a nice Midwest race.

This was my third marathon. I have mostly positive things to say about my experience. I thought the spectator support was good. The traffic marshals did a great job at controlling traffic through some busy intersections. The stadium finish was nice touch! The aid stations were a little far apart, but I knew this coming into the race, so I carried a bottle of fluid with me. They did increase the number of aid stations at approximately the 20-mile mark, which was great. I thought they got some great speakers for the pasta dinner. I have never attended the pasta dinners before, but I couldn't resist getting the opportunity to hear Kathrine Switzer and Jean Driscoll speak. The course was a little crowded with all of the half marathoners - especially going into the park around mile 8 - but overall, this did not present much of a problem. I was pleasantly surprised at the number of marathoners that I got to run with after the half-marathoners split off around mile 12. I was worried that I would be running a lot by myself, but this was not the case. There were always other runners around me. My only real disappointment with the race was the actual racing surface. I had read the reviews from the previous year and did not hear any complaints, so I was surprised at the amount of concrete that the runners were required to run on. I would say that at least half of the course was concrete, even on residential streets. I guess I am spoiled as I do all of my long runs on a nice, paved, bike trail. If I do go out onto the neighborhood streets, they are all asphalt. I do very little running on concrete. I did not experience any blistering but my feet were just extremely tender from all of the impact on that type of running surface. Although the weather forecast for the week was calling for rain, the temperatures ended up being in the 70's with quite of bit of sun and humidity. There were several residents - as well as the local fire department - that were spraying runners with water. That was a blessing! The unexpected heat and humidity after training through a really cold winter here in Ohio made this a difficult race for me. Overall, though, I was very happy and would recommended this race to others.

Even better than last year!!

My second year running this race. In 2009, there were a few minor things that needed improvement (race start and course layout). This year, the directors addressed both of those issues and made the race even better. If you are looking for a mid-major marathon in IL, this is the best race by far. Because of the thousands of half marathon runners, the race feels so much bigger and more fun than the numbers show it to be. Be sure you start ahead of the bazillion slow half marathon runners and you will have a clean, fast, and flat race to qualify for Boston. The fan support in this town is so-so... they are learning what supporting a marathon is about and in a few years more people will be outside cheering, i'm sure. The volunteers are all friendly, helpful and supportive. They are the heart of the race. The finish at the 50-yard line of the football stadium is really cool for the sports enthusiast. This year was very hot and the race medical team and the water stations handled the extra stress perfectly. Don't miss the full or half. You won't be disappointed.

No pares, sigue, sigue; no pares, sigue, sigue....

I want to say, "Well done" to the volunteers and to the community. I was not able to continue my route without their support. My frustation was the day before the marathon when my team and I went to pick up our stuff and saw a beautiful t-shirt and bag that the other people get; when we received our stuff in a plastic bag, we got a t-shirt without the official logo - and no mention of the 2010 Illinois Marathon. And the quality.... We felt like second-class citizens. The rest of it was great, and we are going to run the half marathon next year.

I thought it was perfect.

I have done 30 or so marathons. This one was so fun. I personally thought it was very well organized. I have run some of the other majors, and I know I have seen the best. But what I liked most here were all the folks along the way. This darn thing, for the first year, is so well supported. The volunteers and the neighbors along the way were cheering you on. It was cold too. And they were out there still. Even older folks too were sitting in lawn chairs with comforters on to keep warm?! It was the best. Very different from many I have done. These two communities are amazing to jump in and support this. We runners have to remember how disruptive it is with all of the streets closed off.

Couldn't have been better

This was my second marathon, and I just finished my third. The Illinois Marathon was my favorite. It had fantastic fan support, a decent expo, and more than enough water, Gatorade, gels and restrooms. The finish I will never forget. With about 1.5 miles left, you can see the odd-shaped basketball arena and you know you're getting close. Going into the football stadium is amazing... finishing on the 50-yard line! What a fantastic marathon.

Well done

I go to school at UIUC, and the route was very good and well managed. A lot of good people cheered, and every intersection had a volunteer helping with traffic. I liked the downhill start for the first mile to get momentum for the rest of the race. Two small complaints: No/bad staggered start according to pace. That made for A LOT of passing. (Hopefully this is changed in 2010.) That last hairpin turn for the half-marathon, with 300 yards to go, was brutal.

Great course, good crowd.

I have lived in Champaign for 38 years, so I knew that the course would be flat. The Gatorade/water stops were ample, and there were great crowds. The expo was weak compared to the others I've been to, as was the goody bag (if that's your thing). The finish line organization could've been a lot better. There wasn't enough room for what they had planned. But for an inaugural race, they did very well, in my opinion. I plan to run it in 2010.

Excellent first-time event.

I've raced all over this country, and in about 12 foreign countries, so I have seen both the best and worst of events. I would rank the Illinois Marathon/Half-Marathon near the top for a first-time event. However, with even a good event, tweaking it here and there can make it a great event. My suggestions: 1) start the half and full marathons separately 2) change the course to eliminate the narrow path in the park - nice for running, but not for a crowded race 3) silence the "pie hole" on the obnoxiously loud announcer in the stadium I will return! Great job!

What a wonderful experience!

This was my fourth marathon, so I have seen a few other courses in my running career. I feel that the course was wonderfully laid out with a good mixture of city/neighborhood. I loved running through the golf course/park area. The crowd support was great throughout the entire race. The only criticism that I may have would be the bathroom lines at the start of the race. It was a little confusing as you tried to line up for the race itself. I LOVED the prayer before the race! I thought it was very well done. It was very cool to end up on the U of I field at the end. I hope to run this marathon next year! Great job!

Without a Hitch

The only thing that really bothered me at all was the porta-potties facing the race's starting area, which has been a common criticism from what I can see. But if that is the biggest problem, I think the crew did an excellent job putting it together! KUDOS!!! Loved how we finished on the 50 yard-line!!! C-U is beautiful; continue to show it off to the runners in the future!! :) I ran the 5K, but watched the others finish too.

Great job, except face the porta-potties outwards!

I thought the organizers did a tremendous job. Of course, a first-time marathon will invariably have a few logistical issues;for the inaugural Illinois marathon, it was simply the direction the portable bathrooms faced. They were facing the street where all the runners were lined up to start, and it created a gridlock of folks pointed toward the starting line versus folks pointed towards the bathroom. I couldn't make it to my pacing group, and for the first 5 miles I was dodging slow half-marathoners (which is another problem, but one that occurs in lots of races, unfortunately). The course is great--very flat and a good PR course. I loved finishing in the stadium at the 50 yard line of the football field. Go Fighting Illini! I will definitely run this again.

Pleasantly Surprised At Every Step

Disclaimer: My only other marathon experience was Chicago 2007, with extreme heat, no water, and a race that was canceled halfway through. So, I came into this event a little skeptical. However, at each step of the event, I was pleasantly surprised with the organization and well thought-out details of a first-time event. Being from Urbana, I'd have to say that I was proud of everything that transpired throughout the weekend. The minor improvements that come to mind include a change to the port-a-potties at the start, the narrow path through Meadowbrook Park, the drop-off point for the bags, and more detailed instructions inside the packet. I was unsure of where to drop off my stuff and what to do with the chip at the end. Otherwise, 6 stars for everything else. What a day it was.

Great fun

This was my first race, ever. I did the half-marathon and never felt like a second-class citizen. I felt like a rock star, actually. The cheering fans were awesome. I thought there was to be more music; the little bit I encountered was awesome, and I would have loved more to pep up with. I accomplished what I set out to do, and will definitely do it again. The finish at the 50-yard line at U of I stadium gave me goosebumps. I am a 57-year-old resident of Champaign and graduate of U of I schools. What a trip to run onto the field, and hear my name announced. It was great. I look forward to next year.

High 5 for an inaugural race!

Kudos: 1) Very nice, ROOMY expo. I didn't feel like a sardine. 2) The list of local churches in the packet was a nice touch. Thanks! 3) Those orange-shirted volunteers were far from green-horns! Wonderful support. 4) Well organized. I salute the director! 5) Nice finisher's medal and the best shirt I have ever earned. 6) Brazzo and Beardsley were very entertaining. 7) Spectators were plentiful and gave great support. The only marathon I've run that might have had more was Marine Corps in DC in 2005. 8) I ran with the four-hour pace team. Great job, pacer Bill! Oh, and if you have a way, put in a request for the exact same weather for 2010! Perfect! :(: 1) There were a good number of porta-potties but they were just plain too close to the starting line. 2) Please turn the half marathoners loose at a 15-minute or so interval from the marathoners. It got too tight on the narrow sidewalk run-path near mile 5. 3) I loved Fazoli's pasta feed. It was very good, but a little on the light side. I had to add a supplementary gyro on the way to my hotel. Overall, one of my favorite marathons so far.

Solid Work for a First-Time Event

I was really impressed with the organization for a first time marathon. I ran with the 3:15 pace group and the pacer was outstanding. The finish in the stadium was great. The course was really packed in during the early miles and I was concerned about getting tangled up, but things opened up later on. I caught some people running the half near the end as I entered the stadium. I came within inches of running into the backs of two half-marathoners as I entered the stadium (as I was sprinting and they were walking). Perhaps there is a way to avoid this in the future. Regarding the bottled water, I think most people don't realize that it was donated from a local flood preparation program and was going to expire soon. While bottles weren't ideal, the race organizers were actually being green (which is very trendy now!) by using water that was going to be thrown out. Kudos to all of the locals who showed up to cheer and volunteer. The support was great. Regarding the end-of-race food, the pre-race instructions explained where post-race food and drink would be located after the race. I thought this part of the race was very good.

A look back

I've run many different marathons in my tenure as a runner, generally larger races that have been very well organized. Considering that this was an inaugural race, I would say that this was a success, but a few things should be considered for next year: 1. There was no organization at the start as to how people should line up according to pace. This created some confusion, and there were people towards the front of the race wearing running restricting costumes. They should have started farther towards the back for safety reasons. 2. There were port-a-potties at the start line. This caused lines of non-runners intermingling with actual runners. 3. Instead of giving out cups of water, many of the aid stations were handing out full bottles of water rather then cups. This was a frustrating concept because once the runners were done with the bottle, it would then be discarded on the course, creating an unsafe clearing. Also, it was rather wasteful. Overall, I'd say that the course was interesting and the race was rather smooth. If I would run this race again, I would just hope for a more competitive field.

Fantastic!

It was great to be back on campus after nearly 25 years, and being able to run onto the field was spectacular. I was very impressed with how many people turned out to cheer us on. It was a great feeling. My only suggestion is to try to get smaller water bottles next time or use cups, and I agree with others that they should have water every mile after mile 6 or alternate with, say, Gatorade. All in all, it was a perfect day and a great route to run.

Impressive inaugural race

This race surpassed all my expectations. Very well organized, great turnout, professionally executed. A few nits and suggestions: 1) Eliminate the hairpin turn before entering stadium (half-marathon). 2) Hand out GU packets a bit before water stations so runners have time to eat GU first, then wash it down with water. 3) Mile marker at mile 12 (half-marathon) was missing. 4) The stadium PA system was much too loud. 5) Spectators were spectacular! 6) As always, thanks to all of the wonderful volunteers!

Great first-time marathon for Champaign

For a first-time marathon, it was a great experience overall. First, I asked for a late checkout at Econolodge; no problem. I asked for extra pasta for dinner at a local restaurant; no problem. I was getting tired at the 20 mile-mark; a kid ran up to tell me to keep going and not to give up. This marathon is about the support of the community, not just the organizer. In all of my marathon running, this was one of the best!

Very good inaugural marathon!

This is a good PR course. Very FLAT, with plenty of course support, and this year's weather was perfect. The course is a mini-loop within a loop course and the design did a good job of showing off the campus town charm of the C/U area. As long as you do not mind the mini-loops needed to cover 26.2 in a relatively small town, this is a pleasant run. The only "problem" was a slight bottleneck between miles 5 and 6 where the course entered a park and followed a running trail. That small issue aside, any race that ends on the 50 yard-line of a football stadium gets my vote. Course support and supplies were adequate, with plenty of bathroom facilities and parking at the starting area. Assembly Hall was open to the runners before the race and provided restrooms and a place to stay warm that was within a few hundred yards of the starting line. There were also two long banks of porta-johns along the start. Crowd support varied by area of the course, although in general the locals and students were very supportive and the volunteers were enthusiastic. Also, the post-race feed is something special. In addition to the usual bagel, cookie, and banana fare, there was hot pasta and pizza slices. Awesome! And the finisher medal and tech shirt were both very cool. I plan on running this one again. And again.

Nice course, disorganized start and finish

I will admit that this is only the second race of this size I've ever run, and both times I've run a large race I've been disappointed in both the start and finish line organization. In this case, although the start line was really chaotic, I was mostly disappointed in the finish line. Spectators were unsure of where to be, the post-race food and drink were too far away (and not clearly labeled), and the area surrounding the food, drink, and massages was WAY TOO congested (and there were no Mylar blankets available). Also, I was very disappointed in the finish-line race photography. However, the course itself was great and there were spectators the entire way for the half-marathon. The course volunteers were wonderful and I appreciate everything they did.

Excellent 1st Marathon

Overall, the race went very well. The weather cooperated, the course was well-marked (despite my concerns about covering Green Street three different times), the aid and course officials did a great job, and it was very exciting to finish at Memorial Stadium. My suggestions (and those received from people during packet pick up): - Add shuttles between the marathon relay drop points. Many runners were concerned about getting to and from the relay switch points - Provide plastic fasteners for ChampionChips rather than having us tie them to our laces - Better organization at the finish line - there was a mob of people but no real officials, so I didn't get a picture or any real aid after the race finished Otherwise, it was a great day! I will definitely be doing it again!

Excellent Spring Marathon

Congratulations to the race director and all others involved in the planning and execution of the inaugural Illinois Marathon. Job well done! Great course. Awesome stadium finish. Superb pace teams. Excellent website with detailed maps and race info. PERFECT field size. Not too big, not too small. A true runner's race. My only suggested improvements would be: 1) If you increase the field size to 15,000 runners, PLEASE consider different start times for the full and half. This year's field size made for a comfortable start and very enjoyable race. Adding even more runners will result in a crowded start and increase congestion throughout the race. 2) Mark the location of the gear check on the course map, and have better signs on race morning. There were many runners that walked to the start line, only to learn that the gear check was located a couple blocks up north. 3) Have the start line porta-potties positioned so that the lines form on the lawns rather than in the street. Thanks, and "C U" next year!

Great community support; flat and fast course.

Initially I should say that this was extremely well-done for a first-time event, but as with any new race, there are areas that need improvement. Pluses: 1) Very flat course (but inexperienced runners need to know that flat races are hard on the thighs if you train on hills - just be aware); 2) Wonderful community support and friendly volunteers; 3) Plenty of water on the course; 4) Great parking. Drawbacks include the really awful post-race experience. I understand the need to leave the field; I have run many races that finish in a football stadium, so I don't mind walking up the stairs, But the tiny area for post-race food was way too congested and should have been spread out in this really large stadium venue or moved outside. Also, it should never have been placed immediately next to the bag pickup area. I never got any food, although it looked like they had good choices! They should also have a family meeting area (it took me an hour to find my fellow runners) and better instructions for spectators. I WILL come again, anticipating that the kinks will be worked out. Good marathon!

HALF-MARATHON

For a first-year event, this was great. There were a couple of improvements - (1) PORTA-POTTIES at the start... maybe relocate them or at least turn the line away from the start corral; (2) after the run, the climbing of the stadium stairs wasn't much fun (I'm not sure if there is a correction for this because the finish in the stadium is cool and you do have to exit the stadium somehow); and (3) there was a bit of confusion at the packet pickup for the day of the event. I'M NOT COMPLAINING AT ALL, THOUGH - this was a nice run and very well done for a first-year event. I likely will try to work the full marathon into my schedule next year.

Excellent

What made this marathon truly excellent was the accessibility of the course to spectators. My family was able to see me several times throughout the course without fighting crowds or walking long distances. There was plenty of parking at the start/finish for spectators showing up after the start, and restaurants/coffee shops, etc. for them to take a break while I was out on the course. They were able to relax comfortably and enjoy a great view of the finish at Memorial Stadium. Any minor shortcomings of the event or course layout, in my opinion, were well worth it to accommodate them. As this event will surely grow over the years, I hope this aspect of this great event will not be compromised.

I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED!

Simply put: a great marathon experience. The course is flat and was well marked and well supported. The volunteers were outstanding. Everyone was friendly and encouraging. The police were helpful, and traffic control was not a problem. The entire event from packet pick up to medal pick up was well organized and well done. The finish in the stadium was fun. There was plenty of post-race food available, and I was one of the later finishers! Congratulations, Mark, on a job well done.

A runner's race

This race was so excellent that I don't have words. It's like everything was thought of... very well stocked aid stations, great finish line, great start line, porto-potties everywhere, etc. Flat course, enthusiastic spectators - the community has already embraced this race. I will definitely want to do this race again.

Fantastic Race! Best Medal Ever.

The medal was by far the best I have ever received. The tech shirt was nice. Really nice course with an amazing number of spectators for a first-year event. There were a lot of porta-potties on the course and at the start; although, the porta-potties at the start should be re-configured. Cyclists on the course were very supportive and helped any runner in need. The local race director was great about replying to emails. The expo was small, but picking up my bib and shirt was a breeze. It would have been nice to see or hear from the local race director or some committee members at the expo. My only complaint would be the timing chip. The chip package said we would be charged $30 if it was not returned, but the announcers said the chip was ours to keep. This is a must-run race.

First-time marathoner

This was my first marathon, and I loved the course. It was a nice, flat route. I enjoyed all of the supporters too. I suggest that the port-a-potties be turned to the outside of the start line next year because they made it really crowded at the start line. The food and bag-check should be moved to an area where you don't have to climb stairs after running 26.2 miles. Other than that, it was GREAT, and I will be there next year to run this one again!

Great BQ Marathon

It was a flat, fast course, with lots of room to run. The community support was amazing! They had great parking, and the food after was a full pasta meal - not just snacks. The stadium finish was cool, and great on the legs. Meeting with Bart Yasso and Dick Beardsley was the best part. They both signed books and posed for photos, and Bart had some great stories.

Overall a great event.

I would recommend this marathon. The event was very well organized, starting from the packet pick up and expo, which was great. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. The hotel I stayed at (Super 8), which did not have good reviews, turned out to be great; the staff was helpful and supplied maps and directions, which was great. The race start was great, and the course was very good - really well marked and policed well. The spectators where fantastic. I have to make note here that I had a hip flexor problem and a spectator gave me some Advil and another pointed me in the direction of an aid station where I got water and an ice pack. A big thank you to those people. Unfortunately I do have a complaint and hopefully enough people will comment on this. After running 26 odd miles to get to the end, having no instant carbs was awful. Also, climbing over the wall and up the stairs was cruel, and it didn't help that it was chaos upstairs, with lines and people everywhere and no one knowing which line was which. About 20 minutes later, I found myself standing in a line to get something to eat and drink, when I really just wanted a blanket and Gatorade. I was so cold that I was shaking. This is the first race where we had to go looking for food, drink, etc. I am looking forward to running this again but I will have my husband standing at the finish line with a blanket and Gatorade.

Outstanding first go.

I ran this one because it was my wife's home town. I didn't expect much, being that this was the first edition, but I was very pleasantly surprised. Everything that mattered was done right. Definitely a PR course (although I didn't get one), but the surface did take its toll (about 24 miles is on concrete). Finishing by going into through the tunnel into the stadium was great - especially since you were looking right at yourself on the JumboTron as you finished. It really felt like a big deal. It was particularly fun to be finishing in 3:09 because Bart Yasso was yelling at everybody over the PA system that they needed to hustle in to qualify for Boston at 3:10. A few nits: Full, 20-ounce water bottles at water stops? That's a bit nutty. It wasn't at all clear where you were supposed to go after you finished - I ended up walking back out through the tunnel and missed the whole post-race thing. Results were not posted anywhere near the finish (or, if they were, none of the volunteers knew where they were). They were up very quickly on the web. The fact that those are my only complaints shows how well the organizers pulled this one off.

Nice Race Overall, But Some Disappointments

I ran the half-marathon. The race and the course were great. The finisher's medal was great. Spectators and volunteers were plentiful, and the race itself was one I would do again. That is, if I end up getting my race shirt mailed to me. By the time I got to the packet pick up, all small and medium race shirts were gone! Not sure how you can run out of shirts when everyone must specify their shirt size on their registration. But, there were pages and pages of names of people who did not get a race shirt because they ran out of them. So, we signed up on the sheets to have a shirt mailed to us. Guess we'll see if that happens. Race morning, the port-o-johns were lined up behind the starting line, and there seemed to be quite a lot of them. But, the doors were facing into the street where everyone was lined up and waiting to start the race, so it was quite confusing and difficult to get the opportunity to use one of them before the start. Perhaps next year, turn them around, so that the lines for using them will be on the outside of the course, rather than in the midst of the starting crowd. And, the water bottles were just a bit too much and seemed wasteful - as most people only took one or two swallows and then threw the rest of the bottle down on the ground.

Good choice for a flat marathon

Overall, this was a good race. The course was flat, as promised, and spectators were plentiful despite the course running mainly in neighborhoods/parks. A few items to consider for future installments: Porta-potties at the start... why have the line for the restroom interfere with those already in the start corrals? Move the location or face the porta-potty doors outward. Aid stations - plentiful but seemed very wasteful with full bottled water. Maybe ok for the 5K, but not the half or full. They need Gatorade at the finish line. I had a tough time figuring out where to go for post-race Gatorade and refreshments. Finally, I realized we had to go upstairs to get to it, but it was very crowded and I never got any Gatorade.

Nice race, but crowded

Positives: the course was very well marked, with clear signs at each turn; course is mostly flat, but a few minor uphills at about 20-23 miles; the volunteers were awesome - lots of them, very friendly and helpful; the finish at the 50 yard-line was really fantastic. Negatives: the streets are narrow, so it was elbow-to-elbow running for the first 6 miles, and it got worse on the very narrow park sidewalk at about mile 4.5; according to local media, there will be 15,000+ runners next year, so be warned if you do not like crowded races - the course will be packed tightly next year; at the finish, post-race food and toilets were all the way up the stadium stairs - quite a challenge after running 26.2, so my dad had to help me up the stairs. Disclaimer: this was my first full marathon. I have run 3 half-marathons as well.

A great first-time marathon

I would highly recommend this race to anyone. Great crowd support and great course. Since I am an alumnus, it was like going down memory lane. The large water bottles were unnecessary and caused havoc trying to avoid stepping on them. I thought climbing stairs to exit the stadium was cruel too, since I could hardly walk at the end.

Great inaugural race

The race directors should be commended for putting together such a top-notch race. The course was very fast (although I did not think it was overly flat - lots of small inclines and declines, which I like). The spectators were fantastic and there were lots of volunteers. It got a bit windy in the second half, but at this time of year, wind is always going to be a potential factor. My suggestions for improvements: 1. Please use cups for water - not bottles. SO much was wasted. 2. There should be more water stops. I think they should be every mile after mile 6. There were not enough on this course and I thought it was by far the biggest shortcoming. 3. Make runners enter the corral from behind the start line. Just seconds before the start, people were trying to make their way back. Otherwise, great race! I highly enjoyed it and enjoyed the tour through C-U!

Terrific first (for the race and me)

This was my first marathon, so I can't compare it to others. However, I can say that this proved to be a really good choice for my first. I came here to qualify for Boston, and conditions were just about perfect. The flat course posed no exceptional challenges, the course management was terrific, and the 3:30 pacer took us out at pace and kept it steady throughout. I finally dropped off pace around Mile 18 but still managed to run 3:38:20 - well below the 3:45 I needed for Boston. I might have enjoyed the first 10 miles more if the half-marathoners had started separately from the marathoners, but the heavy traffic didn't pose any problems for staying on pace. I'd recommend this race for anyone looking for a Boston qualifier or a first marathon. I couldn't have asked for a better first-marathon experience.

Engaging, fast, and perfect small town marathon

Congratulations, and thank you to the race directors, staff and volunteers for pulling off a truly successful inaugural marathon. This was my 7th marathon, and I was so impressed by the changing neighborhoods, well placed turns, and enthusiastic spectators and volunteers. The finish in the Memorial Stadium was the best finish of any race I can remember. May I make two suggestions? 1. Please have clocks, if possible, at the mile markers for those of us who still refuse to wear running watches. 2. I think most runners come to the expo assuming that they will receive free samples. We were a little disappointed not to have any free munchies or drinks. It's silly, but we get a kick out of playing "Pacman" at these expos. Thank you again - this race reminds me why the smaller, less-urban marathons are truly the best-kept secrets!

amazing finish view from football stadium

Very fast and flat. They had water and Gatorade every 1 or 2 miles. Power gel was given at 7, 11, and 19 miles. The finish area-food was fantastic. The course was beautiful through the campus of University of Illinois at Champaign Urbana. This was the most organized marathon among my 18 finished marathons. They had plenty of free parking. There were lots of nice restaurants around campus, and good places for lodging. This is a highly recommended 5-star marathon and half-marathon.

Fantastic inaugural race

Course: Would've been perfect had the part on the sidewalk/trail not been there. Organization: Excellent all of the way around; the finish was awesome. Spectators: Surprisingly strong, given the race size and population of the city (I gave 5 stars with recognition that it's not a major metro marathon). I hope it won't drop off after the first year This was, all in all, a great race. Congrats, organizers!

Pretty good first effort

The expo was a tad light on offerings, but nicely organized. Quarter-zip long-sleeve is nice, and the finisher's medal is terrific. The towns did a nice job coming out to support the first annual race. Terrific atmosphere, finishing in the stadium. Volunteers were top-notch. There were a couple of logistical things that they can improve: Need porta-johns in the largest parking lot north of the start line. Too many participants were allowed to enter the start line from the front; they need to close that off with volunteers. Finishers should be provided with space blankets at the finish line - it is a necessity! The exit from the field turf up to the concourse was TOO congested. Offer at least two sets of stairs, please. Minor suggestion: The course had too much winding through empty residential neighborhood (miles 15-18). There was no crowd there and lots of annoying turns. All in all, a solid event that will surely grow in scope. The stadium PA announcer needs to have good music ready BEFORE the event - not someone's iPod with a couple of Christmas tunes. C'mon. Volume was an issue as well. Congratulations, volunteers, and thanks.

Great first-time race with only one complaint

My only real complaint is that returning the chip was confusing. Before the race, runners were told in writing that they'd be charged 30 bucks if the chip was not turned in after the race. I couldn't find the chip return location after the race, but then I thought I heard an announcement that we did not have to turn in the chip. Overall, though, this being the first-ever Illinois Marathon, I was very impressed with the organization. The lines at the expo and the race-day porta-potty lines were not long (and sometimes non-existent). I hated the long lines at Chicago's Marathon. I will definitely run the Illinois Marathon again in 2010 or 2011.

Lots of steps

Organization was good! I had a good, fun weekend, with good support from the public and neighborhoods. I had a better time here than in Chicago - except for the fact we had to climb lots and lots of steps to get to the bag check, food and exit. But I would recommend this to anyone doing an Illinois marathon.

Great neighborhood marathon!

Loved it. Course was flat and fast. Volunteer support was absolutely fabulous. It went off without a hitch! The expo was small, but it was the first, so that's to be expected. Parking was great; support was great.

Great Course, Nice Support, First-Class

It is a first-class event with a nice, flat course. My brother and I were impressed beyond belief. We ran a first-time marathon a few years ago and swore we'd never do another one again.... But, we're both glad we chose this one. The only negatives: the expo was a little small (it will grow) and the porta-potties were too close to the starting line making things a bit crowded (they could be pushed back into the grass a bit). One other thing: the hotel staff was a grumpy about all of the marathoners asking for late checkout so that we could shower.... But, I'm sure marathon organizers will hear about that and work with the hotels in the future (who wants to drive home 6 hours sweaty and stinky?). But, for the first-time event, there were more than enough porta-potties. There was plenty of crowd support and numerous GU and water stations; and it was fun to run onto the football field and see yourself on the big screen for the finish. Oh, and the food spread was unbelievable - pizza, pasta, fruit, cake, etc. I'd strongly recommend it.

I will enter this marathon again

They did just about everything right for their first marathon. I saw people running 5Ks trying to use the toilets close to the start line, so I would not have put toilets so close to the start line. Giving out bottles of water was a waste of water, so I would have uses paper cups. Other than these two points, CU is a great place to host a marathon.

Excellent race!

This was my third marathon, and since U of I is my alma mater, I had to run this one. I thought that the organization for the race was great. There were many water stops, and at many of them they gave you a full bottle of water. Through the course there were many water stops that were also giving out GU. The course was flat and fast, but not boring. You ran around the campus a few times and through both Urbana and Champaign. For the finish, you ran down the middle of Memorial Stadium and finished on the 50-yard line. I will definitely run this marathon again.

Great first-time event

Champaign did an excellent job of putting on their first marathon, and considering the colder weather at the start, spectators were GREAT. The only improvement I would suggest is that runners wearing earphones should be encouraged to run to one side of the road or trail. I had to continually break my stride to try and get around them, as they could not hear my respectful plea: "Runner to your left/right, coming through." This was an excellent course. I have run many marathons, and HATS OFF for making this one an excellent first-time event.

Outstanding Inaugural Race

This race was EXCELLENT. The community support with volunteers and spectators was awesome! I was very surprised to see so many people out on the course cheering you on. There was hardly any part of the course where there weren't any fans. The course was also VERY FLAT. You can't get much flatter than that, and it was fairly scenic too. It was nice to go through part of the beautiful University of Illinois campus as well. Finishing on the 50-yard line of Memorial Stadium was pretty neat too. Water and Gatorade stations were well stocked and well staffed. Plenty of port-o-potties. Several GU stations. Post-race food was also very good; they had all of the usual stuff and also Biaggi's Pasta and Papa John's pizza - free!

Going to be one of the nation's premier races!

WOW! I cannot be more impressed with how flawlessly this marathon was executed!!! The people who put this race on did an A+ job, from start to finish, and everything in between. I'd call this race a mid-major (after only 1 year), and worth doing! Some of the highlights: - Pre-race bandstand entertainment while waiting for start. - Running through campus 3 times during marathon. - Plenty of parking because start/finish lines were at the sports complex. - Lots of activity at the relay stations along the course. - Genuine interest by the local residents. Some even had block parties on their front lawn. - Easy for spectators to navigate through town (obviously don't try to drive across the marathon route). - Finishing in Memorial Stadium (even the military guys were there ringing the bell). - Great shirts, finishing medals, etc. for all you "stuff" lovers out there. - Tons of volunteers with great attitudes. Great job to all!

Good job by organizers for an inaugural marathon

The positives: Amazing fan support - not what I was expecting for race in a small city. Having the finish line at University of Illinois' football stadium was nice. There were plenty of porta-potties on the course, and in several places, energy gels were handed out - and early too, not just in the later miles like some marathons do (where it is too late). Nice technical race shirt, and the finisher's medal is good. The negatives: Most of the roads seemed to be concrete, even in residential areas. The run through a park about miles 4 through 6 was too tight for all of the runners (at that point, the full and the half were together). Handing out bottles of water at some aid stations was a waste, as most runners just took 2 or 3 sips and dropped the entire plastic bottle-full on the course. The start was too congested. In general: I was talked into this race by friends who were running it. I was leery because of all the horror stories of inaugural marathons. Overall, though, I was pleased with this marathon, and would consider it again.

So far, the best one yet

This is the best of the 9 marathons I have run. The organizers did a great job directing traffic, there were 2 porta-potties at every mile (sometimes 4), and many spectators from the Champaign-Urbana area cheered as we went by. At the finish, there was more than enough pizza and pasta even for the 5-hour-plus finishers. You get the added bonus of watching yourself on the big screen at the U of I football stadium's 50 yard-line when you finish. I was raised in central Illinois and it was great to be a part of such a well run event. Highly recommended for all the right reasons, including a very nice finisher's medal. If you need to cross Illinois off your list, then seriously consider this one. Great job on your first event; I'll be back!

Good course, very well organized, very friendly

I would do it again. It was a nice size, and had a flat course. I would never have known it was their first. There was plenty of parking, and I liked the access to BR at Assembly Hall and the stadium.

Well-Run Inaugural Marathon

I enjoyed this race. The course was pleasant, going mostly through residential and U of Illinois areas. I was very pleased with the numbers and the enthusiasm of the crowds... the town really turned out wonderfully. Even for the marathon portion of the course, when many times there are a lot fewer fans... this one was good. The finish was very nice as well, and running down the ramp onto the U of I football field for 180 yards to the finish line was a neat way to end the race. The medal was very nice. The shirt (navy blue tech shirt, half zip with minimal advertising on it) was the best shirt I've ever had in any race. I'll use it for many years to come. Nice! Considering that this was the first time for this race, with 7,000 in the half and 2,000 in the full marathon, I think the organizers did a very good job. I have only a couple of technical suggestions for future consideration. First, make the mile marker signs taller. They were about shoulder height or so, and if you were on the opposite side of the street, you couldn't see them too well. Second, the practice of handing out full bottles of water (20 ounces each) at water stops. It is more water than most want at a single stop, and I sure saw lots and lots and lots of plastic bottles strewn around for a half-mile or so after each stop. I hope this race can continue. It fills a nice niche in the spring schedule here in the Midwest. The course is flat and very accessible. Thanks for a great start to what I hope is a good tradition!!!

Great start, due to support from volunteers

It's a flat course in a windy area at a windy time of year. Volunteers made this event happen by providing their time, which included hours of traffic control. I liked the bottled water and it was neat to stretch on the warm prescription turf at the finish. One complaint: please reposition the porta-potties as the doors were opening out toward the narrow course.

It looked like the whole town got involved

For a first-time race, they did everything right. They had everything organized very well, and the course was flat and fast. The pace teams were out there to assist. The placement of the water/Gatorade stations were just what a long distance runner looks for, every 2 to 2.25 miles until mile 20 and then every mile for the last 6 miles. Just right. The medal was very nice with a spinner shaped like the state of Illinois. The speakers at the pasta dinner were very interesting and there was a nice slide show.

Very impressive for a first-time marathon

Course was very nice and well organized. Volunteers were plentiful and did a great job of guiding traffic, getting fluids to the runners, etc. Finishing on the 50 yard-line made for a very nice feeling. The fans were pretty good and plentiful through most of the course, though they could have been a little more enthusiastic. Two recommendations for improvement: 1) The porta-potties at the start should have doors facing away from the starting area so the lines are easier to tell. 2) Have another opening from the field up to the food, so it doesn't get as congested. All in all, I was very impressed with the race, especially for its inaugural time out.

A spectacular inaugural event

I didn't run the full, but rather the half-marathon. With common starts, courses (at least the first 10 miles) and finishes, I'll reserve my comments to what was common. From packet pick-up to start to departure, parking and access to key areas was very good. Organizers provided clear directions, parking was readily accessible and traffic was manageable, even on race morning. The race started on time and - at least through the first 10 miles of the marathon course - there were lots of spectators, more than sufficient volunteers, and well-apportioned water stations (bottled water - great idea!). The course - although flat and fast - was not at all monotonous as race organizers set it up to weave throughout the Champaign-Urbana "twin communities." The finish - surely one of the most spectacular of any half or full marathon (and - I believe - one that will become the standard for future races in major college communities) - ended in Memorial Stadium, home of the Fighting Illini. Runners entered the stadium through a tunnel at the south end, coming onto the field for a partial lap, before ending the race in a sprint from the north end zone to the 50 yard line (did I mention the thousands of cheering spectators and runners?). Medals (very cool, with actually moving parts) were distributed and water was readily available. There were two "glitches" in what was otherwise an exceptionally well-staged event. First, after the race, runners were left to fend for themselves in finding their bags and food, in an area of the stadium - away from the finish - completely insufficient for the number of runners needing access to this area. I tried my best to find a volunteer at the finish who could direct me to food and bag pickup without success; in the end, I resorted to asking other runners. Second, organizers need to consider how to segregate runners and walkers - at the finish, runners were impeded by 5K, half and full walkers who - seemingly oblivious to the fact that a race was in progress - walked 3, 4 or 5 abreast toward the chute. A third change I would ask organizers to consider is the starting "gun" (use a starter's gun, not an announcer saying "Go!"). In total - to me, at least - this was only a minor distraction to an otherwise exceptionally staged race.

Awesome!

This was a truly fantastic course (I may be biased because I'm from Champaign)!! It's nice and flat and there were fans every step of the way. There is no out-and-back section, which always is a plus in my book. Finishing on the 50-yard line of Memorial Stadium is a real treat as well! This would be the perfect marathon for a first-timer or someone who wants to break a PR! Great job!

Good course; poor organizational decisions

The course was nice and the weather was perfect. The fans were somewhat limited but very energetic. There were many odd decisions made organizationally: At the start the porta-potties lined the start corral, with the doors facing in towards the runners in the corral so that no one could get in or out. There were long lines for everything. You had to stand in line to check your bag. At the finish line there was only water until you stood in a very long line, walking up stadium steps to get your bag back and maybe get some refreshments. There was nearly unlimited room on the field at the finish but the organizers choose to make everyone wait (and climb stairs) to hang out in a crowded hallway inside. A couple of aid stations that were supposed to have Gatorade had none. The organization of the aid stations was erratic - at some stations, the water and Gatorade were on the same side of the road, and at other stations, they were at opposite sides of the road with no warning ahead of time which side you needed to be on (a real problem at the first aid station when traffic was very heavy). I found the volunteers working the aid stations to be very enthusiastic. Porta-potties appeared reliably at every mile marker; there was no guessing where the next pit stop would be.

Well Organized; Great Volunteers; Best Medal Ever

First, I LOVE that this is a Saturday marathon. PLEASE keep it on Saturday. Plenty of porta-johns at the start. Great sound system and instructions. Clear course markings. An unbelievable number of enthusiastically supportive volunteers throughout the course. An abundance of water, GU, Gatorade and other goodies throughout the course. Awe-inspiring finish inside Memorial Stadium. Best medal I've seen. For a back-of-the-packer like me to encounter fully stocked aid station, enthusiastic volunteers, and not be pushed off to the sidewalks, there has to be great organization. I hope this is the first of a long consecutive streak of annual Illinois Marathons for me. It's great to have a first-class new marathon like this so close to home.

A great marathon, although this was the first year

The inaugural Illinois Marathon was an almost perfect race. The volunteers were numerous and enthusiastic. The course was a little more challenging than I thought it would be, mainly because of the sometimes fierce winds. It was a thrill to finish at the 50-yard-line at Memorial Stadium. The speakers at the pasta dinner the night before the race, Yasso and Beardsley, were fascinating and both really inspired the runners. Word got out that this race took two years to plan, and it showed! You should be there next year!

Represents the state well!

I ran it today - nice weather for an inaugural marathon (cool, clear skies, and the wind wasn't too strong). The course is flat, with the steepest long hill section just west of the country club, where a lot of neat homes draw your attention. Mile markers were easy to spot big blue signs, often with porta-potties by them and/or liquid refreshments. Finishing on the 50 yard-line of any stadium is always sweet! Spectators were everywhere, lining downtown streets or sitting or standing outside their homes. There was no lack for friendly encouragement. The pasta dinner the night before the race was good. I heard Beardsley speak (for the second time, though he didn't play his "Lucky" song) and I heard the other speakers were good also. The expo was fine, and I was surprised to find that we could keep the timing chip (nice souvenir to keep on my shoe). The finisher's medal is probably the best in my collection, and I've never seen one with a moving piece before - pretty cool. Excellent post-race massages, and plenty of food, even for late finishers. Two suggestions for improvements: 1) Several stops had bottled water for runners - these were full-sized bottles, which is way too much for any runner to consume, and thus produces lots of waste. I would suggest mini-bottles, which would work fine. 2) Let the field stretch out more before heading into the park with the statues and the narrow trail (mile 5) - it bottle-necked things a bit, though not too bad.

Wow! IL needed this marathon!

Loved it! really enjoyed the campus atmosphere for the start and finish. Great organization and the best fans and water stations I could ask for - plus parking, plenty of toilets, water, and a great post-race atmosphere. But, some of the residential roads were a little rough i.e. cracks/holes, and the starting area was really crowded (and just think of next year, with more runners.) I waited behind the porta-potties to try to squeeze in! Overall, it was definitely worth my weekend in C-U! Thanks for a fantastic event, and I can't wait to see you next year.

A well run, mid-sized, Midwest marathon

The race organizers and Champaign-Urbana can be proud of the job they did today. Packet pick-up was easy as there was plenty of parking spaces close to the expo. Volunteers were helpful and friendly at the expo and on the course. As for the course itself, the roads were flat, relatively pothole-free, and had very little camber. Aid stations were well stocked, predictably spaced, and had many friendly volunteers to help out. My only suggestions to race organizers are to have the porta-potties that were located at the start line aimed so the doors open away from the road. As it was (doors opening to the road), the lines for runners needing to use the bathroom extended into the location where runners were lining up to start. Also, along the course, porta-potties need to be positioned differently. I almost got clipped by a door that was opened just as I was running by. Overall, this was a great race. I would recommend it if you're looking for a well run, mid-sized, springtime marathon in the Midwest.

The organizers hit a home run on this race

This was a first-year race. It was first-class, with no deficiencies. If someone has a problem with this race, from the expo, to the race, to the after-race food, they need to find some other hobby. Results were on the internet by 3:30 p.m. The RD has figured out how to master directing a race. His biggest problem will be doing as well next year.

A great inaugural marathon.

A very impressive first-time marathon, for the most part. The expo was the perfect size and well organized. More information at the finish about where the post-race food was located would have been helpful, but the Biaggi's pasta was excellent! The course was flat and scenic - a little tight through Meadowbrook Park, however - with well stocked aid stations and enthusiastic spectators. The finish in Memorial Stadium was fun. Overall, a great inaugural marathon that could become a must-run spring marathon.

Fantastic Inaugural Race

The course was flat and fast. It wound through nice neighborhoods and downtown areas in Urbana and Champaign, including U of I's campus town. It finished on the 50-yard-line in Memorial Stadium - it was a great feeling running through the tunnel and onto the field. Great support by the volunteers and organizers.
