Fun race, tough course

Signed up last minute due to Providence getting cancelled. Course support and aid stations are top notch. Race shirt and medal are awesome. Don't count on a PR here - The first half isn't too tough, with one moderate hill and a few bridge crossings. There's a monster of a hill at the halfway point followed by rollers throughout the 2nd half of the race. But hey, it's Pittsburgh, so hills should be expected. Finish line festivities were awesome with tons of food. One big complaint: The course measured significantly long. My Garmin clocked me at exactly 26.5 miles and everyone else I spoke with had about the same.

Great support for back of the pack runners

There was support for us slower runners and race officials were at the finish line congratulating us and handing out medals. Very participant friendly and I will definitely return.

My First Marathon in Pittsburgh

This was my first marathon. If this is your first time doing a marathon, well, prepare accordingly because it is packed with hills until around mile 22-22. The last 3-4 miles are downhill and flat, although by that point, you are drained. The crowd is great. They did not slack in drink and goo stations. The volunteers really did an excellent job at every station. Funny signs from the spectators kept me laughing along the way. All around, great organization and well done.

The Bergh Knows Running!

This was simply one of the best managed events we've visited thus far. First and foremost, despite heavy rain complete with thunder and lightning, the crowd support was terrific throughout the entire course. The aid stations very well managed and stocked. The signage throughout clear and impossible to miss. And the best part for me, all the streets were shut down for traffic, so nice open roads which provided plenty of room for the runners. This is also a great Expo. It's in a convention center, so lots of room to move about. No lines to pick up your bib and swag, and many, many vendors. They also had a nice touch of displaying the finishing shirts and medals for the last 12 years. Pittsburgh has a great downtown. We stayed in the Hilton Garden Inn Pittsburgh Downtown, where we were able to walk to the start and finish as well as the waterfront and sports district. That area was hopping, fun crowds out eating, drinking, and enjoying the weekend. They have an event for EVERYONE; 5K, 10K, half, full, full relay! And for the half marathon, you can run either the front half or the back half! How cool is that? The marathon course takes you on a terrific tour of Pittsburgh. The back half is certainly more challenging, but I like that in a marathon. You can get a good feel for the race and the place from our Pittsburgh Marathon video at Race The Nation.

Welcome Back

The first live Pittsburgh Marathon since 2019 was generally a success. A course change necessitated by a bridge collapse in January went well. I'm pleased that the race went forward despite some thunderstorms during the race. The weather kept many spectators away but the hardy souls who turned out were enthusiastic. The negative is that apparently organizers were short on volunteers as many of the water stations were self serve which is not typical for Pittsburgh. Overall another great running of my hometown race. Pittsburgh has many great breweries. When in town make sure to check out Grist House and 2Frays.

Fun, hilly course

My first marathon! Expo was a lot of fun, got great sunglasses as well as other cool swag. Race morning was rainy. Too few bathrooms at the starting line, but there were dozens of port-a-potties within the first three miles so wasn't too bad in the end. Lots of pacers made it easy to keep pace and kept you with a crowd for much of the race, very nice touch. Hills are murderous. Every time you think you got over one another one pops up. Even the tiny ones really stack up over the whole race. I was hoping to gain speed at the downhill on mile 24 but by then shin splints had me going down pretty cautiously. Spectators were incredible, people were really pumped up from all neighborhoods. Tons of fun to see. Post-race was a bit tough to find people, my family got lost trying to walk around the cordoned off parts of downtown. Lots of booths and fun stuff. Kids got candy, I got ice bags from a PT. Nice. Great experience, looking forward to running again!

Excellent Race

I believe this may have been the best Pittsburgh marathon of the 7 I have run. Organization was flawless. Course was excellent. Crowds were light, but I imagine that had to do with the off and on rain. Changed up the medal this year and it was beautiful. Really like the participant shirt. I really enjoy this race and can't wait to run it again next year.

Top Notch Race

Really great job by everyone involved with making this race happen. Organization: Good website- you should feel well informed going into the race. I was surprised at the size of the expo- very nice for a race of this size. Absolutely text book handling of water stations. Hats off to the volunteers who all knew how to do their jobs! Post-race food was unremarkable, but certainly sufficient-no complaints. It was a bit of a free-for-all once you got out of the runner area at the finish - perhaps the only component of the race where some improvement is warranted. I've got plenty of marathon finisher medals and some of my favorites are from Pittsburgh. They are substantial, but not gaudy. I was impressed that they had a 3 hour pacer for this race. Not often seen, but really helpful for the younger guys looking for that BQ. Course: I describe this course as one for the hill lovers. The hill that you will remember is the climb into South Oakland, but there are several extended, but not particularly steep uphill sections. You will certainly have your fill of them as you complete the final steady climb leading into the blessed Bloomfield downhill section. You come back to earth hitting the seemingly endless straight shot down Liberty Avenue around mile 24. Nonetheless, it's a great course on which to finish strong. Considering the May time frame and the nature of the course, it's a tough one if you are thinking PR. Spectators: There were pockets of spectators who were always enthusiastic. Overall though, I found the support to be a little less than I was expecting. The Pitt campus was a ghost town since classes were already out, which was disappointing, but to be expected. I observed more PSU love than Pitt love during the race. Come on Pitt!! To conclude, I highly recommend this race for an enjoyable marathon experience in a great city. Pennsylvania is blessed with two excellent big city marathons in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. Run PA!

Another Great Year

I look forward to this race each year and there was no disappointment in 2018. This was my 6th time running in the event (4th in the full marathon). Expo was solid as usual. I work in downtown Pittsburgh, so I'm able to get to the expo during the day Friday on my lunch break with ease. Race morning is easy if you park across the river near the stadiums and walk across the bridge. I arrived around 6am and made it to my corral with time to spare. Course was excellent with a nice mix of hills and flat surface. Definitely need to do your hill training, but the course is not as hard as it could be. Some hills early, but nothing major. A good climb from mile 10 to about 15. After that, there are some hills, not serious enough to mention. A nice downhill just past 22 and flat thereafter. Weather was perfect this year, but can't give the RD credit for that. Shirt was average. I really loved the medal. I noticed the fan support was a lot lower this year. My assumption is the small crowds had to do with the forecast calling for rain the entire race (which never happened). Those fans that did show up were outstanding. A special thanks to the most enthusiastic group of spectators I have ever encountered. I must have seen them 5 times throughout the day and there energy was contagious. Don't know I have ever seen spectators so pumped up for a marathon. If you are looking for a quality race, go run Pittsburgh. It is first in class.

World class event in world class city

For the 16 time returned home to Pittsburgh to run the marathon. As always great event, but even more special was the way race organizers honored those of us who have run the last ten years. Class act, greatly appreciated.

Another Great Race

Another excellent effort by the organizers. From the expo to the post race snacks, I believe that everything was managed well. My complaint this year was with the crowds. On a decent weather morning, the crowds were subpar in Shadyside and South Side and non existent in Oakland. Most neighborhoods under represented from past years. On the plus side the crowds Downtown were good. The course is first rate with a nice mix of hills and flat. Nice finishing area with Point St Park as the staging area. Visit Hop Farm for delicious brews.

Great way to tour the Steel City

This race does not disappoint. I love visiting Pittsburgh and this race gives the city an opportunity to show off. Nice expo, lots of cool gear/ t-shirts available. Great organization for a larger race. Race course takes you through many of the diverse neighborhoods. Spectator support is outstanding.

Excellent as Always

I know I'm biased, but there are not many races out there better than Pittsburgh. A fun and not overwhelmingly big expo with lots of cool vendors. Race day was fairly easy for a bigger city race (of course I know my way around) with cheap parking just a short subway ride away from the start and finish. I really like the course most of all. Challenging, but not ridiculously so for a hilly city, and it shows off some of the best views of the city. No out and backs either. Spectators were supportive, but not as numerous as they could have been. I must have looked really bad because I had a lot of folks cheering for me. The shirt is very nice and the medal is a small work of art. Two small complaints: I wish they had chocolate milk or soda at the finish and I felt that the start could have gone quicker with less time in between corral starts. Otherwise, a truly great race. After the race take the short trip to Allegheny City Brewing in Deutschtown!!

A must-do Race with great support

I have done this marathon twice (and the half, once) it takes you through a huge number of the cities neighborhoods with lots of people along the whole course. There is plenty of aid stations and they are well stocked and organized. When you come down the last mile it is just jam packed with people on the side walks yelling out to you. The finish chute is well organized and efficient from medal to food to pictures

Always great to come home to pittsburgh

The organization is great. Best medical support of any marathon. For the second year very difficult to get to corral C, mass confusion. Since the marathon is the signature event, consideration should be given to starting the marathon at least fifteen minutes prior to the half. The size of marathon field would not conflict with the fast half-marathoners but would give a special recognition for those doing 26.2. An added plus was that the Pirates were home. Best ballpark in country, the 5K on Saturday was a great warm-up. Nice to see so many kids on the course.

A Bucket List Marathon

Pros: 1. Exceptionally well-organized. 2. I got a surprise 'runners box' of goodies shipped to me while I was training with swag, treats, and a $10 discount at Dicks. 3. Course was interesting - truly diverse experiences of running on bridges (five of them), downtown streets, neighborhood roads, and lots of different bands playing different types of music. 4. Best fan support ever! I couldn't believe the turnout. Only one neighborhood was sparse (Homewood), but that gave a time of running reflection. Fans' signs were hilarious. One fan held a sign that said 'get the F up the hill!' and proceeded to hand out cards to each runner that ran near her - the cards had 'Fs' on them! 5. I don't mind hills - they gave me a chance to use different muscles. The hills weren't bad. There's a big downhill around mile 24 which was welcomed! 6. Great Expo (I bought some t-shirts and I usually don't like any shirts at expos.) 7. Downtown hotels were reasonably priced which made for a late wake-up and plenty of sleep before the marathon. 8. No shortage of beverage (gatorade and water) on the course or 'stinger' gels. 9. Marathon start time was 7 (not too early, not too late) 10. PGH Temp that time of year makes it likely that the weather is cool and perfect for running. 11. Course seems safe - no tight turns and wide enough to accommodate the pack. 12. Wave starts were good - 5 minute separation kept the field open in the beginning. 13. PGH. Firefighters had the fire hydrants open and misting water at several points throughout the course. 14. Great finishers medal! Cons: 1. It seemed that the finish line was the least exciting area. However, the overwhelm of personal accomplishment was enough. 2. The expo didn't have a station to double check that the timing device was working. Usually I appreciate this chance to verify that the bib chip works. All in all, an awesome event!!!! I have run Honolulu, Madrid, San Diego, and Space Coast.

Consistent Race

I have participated in this race the past 4 years (2 halves and 2 fulls) and the PGH marathon remains consistent. The early precipitation definitely kept a lot of spectators away so they were light throughout compared to previous years. This is the reason I gave the rating a 4 instead of the 5 I gave the fans last year. Still, many braved the rain and humid temperatures, but appeared to be less enthusiastic as they were in years past. The expo was fine, nothing to write home about. Race morning was easy as we chose to park across the river for $5 at the Heinz Field Parking Lot and walked across the bridge. For a medium size city, treat race morning like a large size city by arriving a bit early as there are a lot of participants in the corrals. More restrooms than I have ever seen before the race, on the course and post-race. I love this course as it takes your through a lot of great neighborhoods of Pittsburgh. Watch out for the serious challenge from mile 10 to 15. This stretch if tough so keep that in mind. Water stops were made easy as they were on both sides of the course while running the first half and one side during the second. Excellent job in that aspect. Really enjoyed the fact that so many people participated in the relay. This made the second half of the race feel less lonely as many runners were around during all parts of the race. Shirt was nice and finishers medal was excellent.

Great Marathon

This was one of my favorite marathons to date. The course takes you through several neighborhoods all over the city, so the scenery is varied and interesting from start to finish. The hills are almost continuous up until mile 22, at which point you begin a nice descent towards the finish line. Spectators were sincere and supportive, often calling out your name to cheer you on. Organization was excellent. The medal is outstanding. I would highly recommend this marathon.

Another Great Job

Once again Pittsburgh proved why it's among the best. Great organization from the expo to the post race. An interesting and challenging course that takes you all through the city with no out and backs. Not as hilly as it could be, but still pretty hilly. Good, but not great spectator support. Great medal and shirt, and a decent value if you register early. All in America's Most Livable City. If you're thirsty post race check out East End Brewing and Grist House Brewing.

Excellent organization and course

I chose this race at the last minute. I was training for another race but had to change plans at the last minute. Pittsburgh was the only large city marathon I could find around the date I needed. I am so glad I found it. I enjoyed visiting Pittsburgh a lot. The race itself has great course, the second half is quite challenging as it is almost all uphill. The fans were great. The start/finish line was very easy to get to and accessible via public transportation. Also, a super cool medal. The shirt was really ugly, though.

Great half marathon

This is a must race to do. Had a great time staying and running in Pittsburgh. The vols do a super job, Cant say anything bad about any part of this race. Oh ya, I received my age group award an all I can say is thank you and WOW, it's the best I have ever received. It made all those early a.m. training runs worth it. Great job to all those involved and once again thanks.

Great course, ruined by inconsiderate spectator

Somewhat challenging but fair course, to be expected in Pittsburgh. I only ran the half for this one but felt inclined to comment anyway. I was on pace for a nice PR during this when it was ruined for me at mile 5 by overenthusiastic spectator support. In a group of 6 people going around a corner, twisted my ankle on a curb after some woman jumps out in front to snap a picture of someone behind me and we all had to dodge her. Stopped and yelled at her and she looks at me like I've got 3 heads and has no idea what she did wrong. I'm usually not one in favor of this kind of thing but based on my experience here, maybe there needs to be some sort of signage telling stupid people not to do that sort of thing, especially toward the front of the race where people are more exhausted and moving faster and have less time to react... because clearly this woman needed it. Other than that it was a great experience and a race I would run again, taking greater care to watch out for idiots. Really enjoyed the many, many other spectators who came out to watch the race who kept me going as I limp-jogged the last 8 miles to an unspectacular finish, the cool bands out on the course, very supportive volunteers, the spray-mister thing over the course at around mile 9... oh yeah, and the 3/4 mile long downhill finish (at least for the half) with people cheering from the top of the bluff at Duquesne University!

Two thumbs up for Elite and back of the pack

I've completed this marathon twice; first as my first (miserable) marathon and second to redeem my first awful marathon (my own fault, not the race's). Between my first and second Pittsburgh, it's been 5 years and about 30 marathons in between, and I've become quite the running nerd. Few races in a city this size can boast an elite field like the one assembled for the race - and have a great race day for relay runners and half marathoners alike. Some context, I'm now a ~3:10 marathoner. At first I balked at the price, but then again, marathon prices have gone up. If you want to feel like you're running in a competitive race that doesn't just have hobby joggers, Pittsburgh is fantastic - while also a great experience for those who like a small town race feel. The race makes clear that the country has far fewer competitive athletes than it used to, and part of the registration fee goes towards elite athlete development. I've run races as large as NYC and as small as a marathon with 10 finishers. Pittsburgh is unique in that it truly caters effectively to all runners. It is a great tour by foot of the city, runners pass by iconic landmarks and bridges, including some hills of course due to the city's topography, but they avoid too many hills if that kind of that would scare you away. The expo was fun, good bargains, great ease in packet pickup - one could be in and out in less than 10 minutes. The city has great spectators and bands - without feeling like a generic Rock n Roll marathon. I'll be back.

A cool city but challenging course

All in all, I really enjoyed this race. Pittsburgh is a really cool place and the course does an amazing job of capturing the best of what it has to offer. Be warned though, this is a very challenging course with seemingly endless rolling hills and a few big climbs and downhills. It also got a bit warm in 2015. Crowd support was great in many areas but non-existent in others. Event organization was great too although I occasionally worried that I might have gotten lost if not for the runners ahead of me. I will say that I was rather disappointed at the finish when I was presented a half marathon medal (I ran the full) and then disappeared into a stream of halfers. Perhaps more emphasis/attention should be given to the marathoners at the finish. All in all, I was very happy with the event and the course and would definitely consider doing it again. Not a place to set a PB, but definitely a place to have a great time and test yourself on a tough course.

A great up-and-coming Marathon

This was a great race for a smaller city Marathon. This will never be a race on the magnitude of Boston or Chicago but they got a lot of things right. The course was tough with the hills in the second half but it wasn't impossible and it was really well marked with good course and crowd support. It is the sort of race that I am really glad I did, but not one I would be jumping up and down to do again. For sure it is a race to check out if you are looking for a spring Marathon though. Things they did right: crowd support was great, good support on the course itself with water stops and nutrition readily available, and pre-race information was good, overall race organization was above expectations Things they did wrong: The shirts were ugly(looked like a 5k shirt), the expo was organized but it wasn't anything to write home about, the course was crowded with the marathon/half/relay all starting in same corrals and running on the same course for the first 12 miles. One final note is that if you look at the course profile the second half is really really hilly, it doesn't make it an impossible course but it is definitely challenging. Make sure you work in some hills in your training. You can also look at my blog (link below) for my detailed review with pictures, Enjoy! http://outdooroutlier.blogspot.com/2015/05/pittsburgh-marathon-2015-race-recap.html

Great Race, much improved!

This was my fourth year in a row running Pittsburgh and was by far the best! The switch to a new shirt company was a great idea. The finishers shirts are great quality. The course is hilly but the aid stations are well stocked and the wet towels on the second half of the course were a life saver with the heat! Organization was great along with crowd support for the entire 26.2 miles! Also a very nice finishers medal!

Superb!

You will not be disappointed if you run this race. Course was a nice mix of hills and flat. All major hills are done by mile 15. Finisher medal is as nice as they get. Organization of this race was phenomenal. Shirt was very nice. If you are interested in seeing Pittsburgh, this is the best way to do so. You will see all the city has to offer while running this race. I did not have plans to repeat any race until I ran the Pittsburgh Marathon...I'll be back next year.

Very challenging. Not for a PR

A very well organized race with enthusiastic fans. This is a hard course with a lot of long uphill segments. The descend towards the end sounds like it would be a nice rest but is long and steep so it can be very hard on your quads. It's a fun city to visit. If you decide to run this race, practice a lot of uphill running!

Way to go, Pittsburgh!

Great course with excellent crowd support. My fourth time running it and it gets better every year. After Boston, this is my favorite race. Fun people in the city, good food, challenging course. The crowds were fun - except Oakland - what's up there?? Where are you, Oakland?? I love that city... Good job, Pittsburgh.

Excellent race! I didn't had a lot of expectation for this race because I heard it was tough and very hilly. Finally, It was hilly (on the second half) but was manageable. This end up to be my funniest marathon ever. I even did my PR. The course is beautiful and you have the chance to explore Pittsburgh in every aspects. Volonteers were outstanding and the crowd was really great. Yes, this marathon is challenging but if you do the proper training, you won't regret it!

Great support, very well organized

My first time running this marathon and was very impressed with the race organization. The crowds were great and there was a ton of aid along the race route. The downhill at mile 23 also made me VERY happy (and totally made up for the uphill at mile 12.) My first time in Pittsburgh and I found it an interesting city to run through. Would definitely run this again.

A must do marathon

I'm so glad I did this race. Very well organized. The spectators in the neighborhoods did a great job motivating the runners. The first 1/3 of the race is flat except for the slight rises on the small bridges. There are about 2 or 3 larger hills in the middle to later part of the run. Only one of which was a pace breaker. Nice downhill then flat finishing miles. I would definitely run this again, a fantastic race.

Great marathon. I highly recommend

I have run this race multiple times and really enjoy it. It is very well organized. Pittsburgh is an extremely hilly part of the country, but this marathon does a great job of avoiding most of the hills. That being said, there are a couple hills that can challenge a runner if they are not prepared. The crowd support is wonderful. The course takes runners through all of the different communities and each of the communities shows their support in unique ways. There are bands/singers/music at every mile. Water is plentiful. My only complaint is that it can be difficult getting into town on race day. Make sure to plan accordingly and get there early. I highly recommend.

Great marathon in a great city

Wow what a great race. Pittsburgh was a happening place not only with the race, but baseball and hockey too. They shut the city down for the marathon/half - spectators, volunteers and bands are awesome. Everything from the expo to the race and post race were super organized. The course was hilly but manageable - running over the bridges over all three rivers was very cool. 25,000-30,000 runners, but only about 5,000-6,000 do the full so after the half/full split at mile 11 it is much less crowded, but still lots of energy. Large expo, nice shirts and medals too. Would recommend this for a large/big city race. If you travel from out of town I high recommend paying a bit more and staying downtown - once there you can walk everywhere. Traffic was bad - espeically on race morning.

Great Marathon very impressed!

I ran this Marathon on 05/04/14. Overall it was excellent. I loved exploring the city of Pittsburgh and seeing the sights of a classic midwestern city. The skyline was excellent. You cross 5 different bridges spanning the rivers around pittsburgh. My only few complaints were the beginning was packed with so many people we could not get into our corral. The roads were very narrow and it was hard to manuever around slower people. Some bands on the course were very bad. Each neighborhoold usually had a big party setup and there was plenty of volunteers, water, and gatorade stations. Porto johns were plenty available. The first half is relatively flat through the city and the over the bridges. The 2nd half starts a very long steep hill by the university of pittsburgh. After that it was neighborhoods which was ok but still with lots of spectators. The last 4 miles was excellent because you can see the city skyline and run slightly downward toward the finish. The metal was a big steel/silver skyline of the city and very good quality. Overall I really enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone.

Beautiful marathon

Lovely city, nice course with bridges but a bit hilly, fantastic crowd, lots of bands, fantastic medal, well-organized, great hotels close to start and expo affordable, pretty nice expo. Only disadvantage is maybe the half that is starting at the same time and makes it very crowded at the finish line.

Great Marathon

I have participated in this marathon two years in a row. There were a lot more runners in 2013, my biggest problem was how crowded the first 8 miles was. I had difficulty getting up to my race pace until the half marathoners seperated. Next year pittsburgh needs to separate the start for the marathoners and half marathoners. I liked the earlier start for 2013 and the expo was good

Kudos Pittsburgh great marathon

I stayed at the Mariott which was a great spot, next door to the expo and a few blocks to the start line. I attended the expo Friday and found the expo fairly clear, it was a nice expo with many unique vendors. Bib and packet pick up was simple, the event shirt is one I would actually wear. The marathon is well organized, the extra security was to be expected. I was in corral B and found entry very easy since there were large signs for several blocks showing directions to the different corrals. The run is awsome running across the beautiful bridges, yes hilly but running through some great areas of the city. The waterstations were well staffed and long, the crowds and bands were all enthusiastic and plentiful. The finish medal is truly a' runner of steel' big and heavy, nice to have a big grassy area to sit and relax after the race. Overall a race I would highly recommend!

My second marathon after Baltimore. The organization and crowd support was first rate and much better than BAL. While the course was a bit more challenging (one big long climb and a good number of rolling hills in the last third), it was a much more enjoyable second than my first. Pittsburghers are great race fans - they had the energy of Boston!

Yinz come run dahntahn n 'nat

Love the course, spectators and volunteers. Streets downtown were packed with cheering people, and all along the course there was good support from the community. Friends and family could easily see their runner(s) multiple times. I had no trouble with parking and walking to the start. For visitors from out of town, there should be a map of the starting line. Maybe it wasn't included for security reasons. If you are traveling, I would highly recommend staying at a hotel downtown. It will be worthwhile. Bring along family, too. They will not be bored. Lots to do, all within walking/subway distance. (My only complaint: pre-race announcements should not reference any local, professional sports teams. We do not need a pep talk from a football player. Every runner is an athlete that day! Celebrate the participants: regular people who have regular jobs and train hard for this day. And NO STYX, please!)

A great event with some minor tweeks to improve

The organizers pulled off a successful event on a nearly perfect weather day. I was in coral B and had no problems at the start. Stayed at a hotel the night before, so parking was easy. Ran with the 3:30 pace group which had two leaders and both were outstanding, keeping a steady pace throughout and providing peviews of upcoming sections and strategies to attack them. Crowds were enthusiastic, especially in Shadyside, but overall, it seemed like there were less spectators than in the past three years. Waited in line for 40 minutes for a post-race massage, but it was well worth the wait. Took the T back to the hotel with no problem. Post race food was a disaster. Race organizers should have put items in bags and handed those out to runners, rather than allowing a free-for-all at the tables. I suspect the half marathoners ravaged the Smiley cookies, bagels and bananas. Like the person who noted all there was left was chips and fruit cups (ugh!), I found the same thing after finishing in under 3:30. Also, an email I sent to race organizers 4 days ago remains unanswered. Better attention to detail could make this an even better event. Still, despite a few warts, I'll be back.

Rivers and Bridges and Hills, oh my!

I enjoyed this race in spite of myself. Told by race organizers to arrive TWO HOURS early, I expected a mess at the start and in parking, but leaving my car at the North Shore (with reasonable $5 parking) and taking (free) transit across the river was painless. Looking over the course elevation profile left me alarmed before the race, but the hills really weren't nearly the terror I had anticipated. Good crowd support over much of the course, and well run aid stations helped the miles go by quickly. there was an abundance of on-course entertainment, though the quality varied from 'Wow!' to 'Ow!' An abundance of Porta-Potties both in the start/finish area and along the route was good news; some folks standing in line for same did so needlessly, with available toilets just down the street. The race medals are HEAVY and, with some points along the edges, could be used as weapons in hand-to-hand combat. I have only a few negatives - a) Race organizers responded to all of my emailed questions, but the usefulness and accuracy of those replies was lacking. b)Post-race food was almost nonexistent. I finished among the top 20% of marathon runners and the tables were virtually empty picked over by the half-marathon finishers. I did get a bag of chips, a banana, and a cookie, but that's par for a 5K race. Every other marathon I've run has done better in the food department.

nice big city marathon

This is my 33rd marathon overall, my first Dicks. The course was unremarkable - unless you like running bridges, in which case - this is your course because you cross the rivers multiple times. The course was not as hilly as i expected - even the 'big' climb after the half splits. There were supposed to be helper runners that would encourage you up the hill - but i did not see them (or need them myself). I ran sub 3:10, so they may have been just there for slower packs, but it was a nice idea. course has nice rolling ups and downs- with one huge downhill at mile 24 - kind of hard on the legs at that point, but welcoming (it was my fastest mile of the racce) expo was wonderfull - very comparable to even larger races, but not too crowded. never too far without spectators of some kind. great water stops - very frequent- i never felt myself really stressed looking for the next station- about every mile and a half - even late in the race. nice long sleeve tech shirt security tight after boston - but was done without being too restrictive. finish line food was plentiful - even though there were so many more half marathoners. overall - a nice big city race with no real serious faults.

Met my expectations and beyond

Everything about this race was FANTASTIC!!! All pros on my list: * easy packet pickup at expo and great shopping * lots of parking on race morning, easy to get to corrals and start * OUTSTANDING security, aid support, crowd support, and support from our troops!!! * GREAT course considering the Pittsburgh terrain * Although very crowded, very nice finish line festival * Nice shirt and AMAZING medal....WOW!!! * WELL DONE PITTSBURGH!!!! I would highly recommend this race to runners of all levels. :)

Great course sandwiched between utter incompetence

First and foremost, this is a great course that takes runners through most of the city. The course is hilly and the weather can be hot so if you're looking to run a P.R. this might not be your race but if you're looking for a great spring marathon to kick off the season with it's perfect. The problem is the organization. Or lack of organization. Oh my... The corrals (especially E) were impossible to get into even ten minutes before the gun went off. They were closed off using baricades so those of us looking for friends or pace groups were out of luck. I don't know how any major race organizers could make such a bush league error. There were two 4:30 pace groups. One guy's strategy was to go out fast and build a 1-minute cushion while the other ran too slow and planned to make up time later. Did no one explain to them what a pacer does? Again, this isn't supposed to happen at major races. The bag check was nowhere near the finish line festival down the road. There is no logical reason for this I can think of. Finishing runners had to limp down the street through throngs of people to get their things. The finish line was a DISASTER! I got pushed along through the exit area without recieving a blanket or a food bag and I still have no idea where they were located. And when I asked a security person if I could go back in and get my blacket the miserable wilderbeast of a woman had the gall to say no! It's not like she couldn't tell I had just run the race - I was dripping in sweat and still had a number on. Luckily another race organizer had more brains and was nice anough to go get me a blanket. On a plus note, there seemed to be more than enough water/Gatorade stations and portajohns along the course. Gu was given out at two locations, as was Vaseline and Icyhot. There was plenty of support from the community in most parts of the course, and the city of Pittsburgh is a great place to visit filled with friendly people. Saw a Pittsburgh Pirates game and had a blast for a very reasonable price. Duck tours and boat tours on the river are also lots of fun.

Well organized, ugly course

This marathon was one of the best organized I have ever seen in my 27 marathons. I stayed at the Host Hotel and that was the way to go. There are a ton of aid stations and they were all very well stocked. The spectators were enthusiatic. There were a number of bands along the route but I found them annoying and not very good. I recommend wearing your ipod to drown them out. The course is hillier than expected, especially miles 12-22, and then a huge downhill at mile 23 so your best bet is to include a ton of hill running - both up and down - to prepare for the course. The course scenery is unremarkable and actually shows the worst of Pittsburgh's urban decay. However, the organization and support on the course make it a worthy marathon to tackle. The finisher medal is huge and post finish ammenities are nice.

Great Crowd/Scenic Course

The atmosphere of the Pittsburgh Marathon is incredible!!! This race draws a huge crowd, and gets a lot of local media attention. The spectators are incredibly supportive and energizing! I encountered several spectators offering snacks and water to the runners throughout the course. The race takes you through downtown, and a few surrounding neighborhoods. I was surprised how nice the free shirt was; I was also impressed with the quality of race packet. Big/Fun Expo. Drink stations are always well staffed and well stocked. The volunteers are plentiful and very nice and encouraging.

Another great Pittsburgh experience

Returning to Pittsburgh I had yet another great experience. Though a very big race the organization is good, course scenic, and amenities good. Water and aid stations were stocked and ready for me every time. I ran the full and though there were a lot of people on the course until we split from the half it was never crowded like some other races I have run. Expo was huge and moved fluidly. Lots of vendors and the convention center was a good place to have it. I stayed in a hotel with a walk blocks to the start. Awesome weather contributed to a good experience. I recommend this race HIGHLY. I will be back next year to run it again!!

Lost some quality with increase in runners

This my 2nd marathon- both in Pittsburgh (2010 and 2013) and I was disappointed with a lot of this year's race. Positives: -Great finish medal -Some great neighborhood crowd support -A lot of volunteers -Finish line area was much improved -$5 race day parking! -Cinco de Mayo theme was a nice added touch Negatives: -Switched from Nike to Asics and quality of premium is really cheap- expo had very little shirts to buy that were geared towards FULL marathoners -Expo was a chaotic mess- SOOO not enjoyable- need some structure in how you move through convention center and parking was terrible! Paid more for parking for expo than for race day! -Crowded corrals with terrible access to port a potties (gate wasnt' even moved and hundreds of people in corral had to squeeze around open 2 feet on each side -heard nothing from start line because so far back and no speakers/audio -Minimal food left when I finished- only potato chips and fruit cups (Just because I am a 'slower' marathoner doesn't mean I should miss out on the things that make the Pgh marathon special- no smiley cookies for me!) - Oakland was mostly depressing and that is after the largest hill of the course. Where were the Pitt cheerleaders? Not to mention the end of the race on the back side of the strip district needed more support for that late in the race -Long LONG LONG lines at port-a -potties on the race course -People walking across the race course (mile 25 you are really going to walk grandma across the road?) -My family really missed the map tracking -Results listed on active.com were incorrect - my 15 mile time was listed for my 20 mile time and vice versa. And they published the wrong male marathon winner on active! I don't know if it is because the race has doubled since my first time around, but I had higher expectations for PGH. I am not sure I will run it again (although I am a die hard PGH girl). Made me feel like as a full marathoner that didn't finish 'fast enough' (I was under 5 hours!) that I wasn't quite the bread and butter of the day.

Great Fan and Vounteer Support

The Pgh Marathon has become a major event for the city. On nearly all parts of the course, volunteers and spectators lined the sidewalks. As a fairly slow hobby jogger, I was surprised when the last half mile was still packed with fans (I finished in just under 4:30). They were pouring onto Smithfield Street, leaving about a 10 foot wide path in the middle. The organizers got the marketing right and the whole city came out to see be part of the action. The only down side is the start, which is very crowded. Let's hope they do not expand the field any more and, if they do, maybe they could have a dual start that merges a couple of miles into the race.

Runner of Steel !!!

Great overall experience. Traffic was heavy in morning around 6 am. The subway T was a breeze from the North shore. The starting corrals worked well as it was not too congested and was still able to run at a good pace from the start. Spectators, volunteers, and music were great. The hills were ok, the downhill leaving Bloomfield at mile 23 was painful for me along with the last two miles. I also ran for charity, the Crowdrise site is good, but their staff is unresponsive to problems. Post event activities were fun. Lots of Boston supporters too. Definitely would run it again!

Where's my shirt?

I ran the half marathon and it was pretty good. Very hilly but lots of spectators helped make it go by very fast. My biggest complaint was that they were out of small amd medium shirts when I went to the expo. The shirts were given out based on what range your bib number was in. So, while other bib ranges still had my size my range did not, so no shirt until they apparently mail me one. That set up makes absolutely no sense. Never seen it done that way. Other than that no real issues with the race. Had more fun in 2009, but I would still do it again.

Great Event!

This was my 2nd time running the Pittsburgh Marathon. The course has a couple pretty big climbs, but overall isn't to bad. The fans are tremendous. The even is very well oranized. The only complaint I had was that although I ran the Full marathon my family ran the relay, somehow at the expo they ran out of shirts for the relay teams. Not sure ecxactly how this happens since the event was sold out 2 months ago. Overall great event!

This Race Has Become All About Money

I love that this race has exploded. But whereas the pre-comeback Pgh Marathon was manageable with a great course, the new and improved marathon is 'let's register as many people as we can for as many different races as we can, then let's start them all together at once...'. Jeez, the start is on a 2-lane road. Yes. Marathoners, half marathoners, and runners of the 1st leg of the relay. Mayhem for about 6 miles. people dodging others, running onto sidewalks, etc. Ugh. The registration fee is WAAAAY too high, as well. This used to be a fun race back in the 1980s and 1990s when it started at the Zoo.

A good marathon but needs better organization

I first ran this marathon in 2010 and it showed a number of flaws that many first year organizations have. Unfortunately it has only gotten marginally better. Upon arrival this year there were neither signs nor people to give information or directions as to gear check, start line, et. There was one sign that said information but no one was standing anywhere near it. At a 40 minutes to the gun their should have been. Gear check was no where close to the start line and there were streets closed preventing easy access to the gear check area. I find it hard to believe but they actually ran out of cups at a number of water stops. They had to pour water or Gatorade in cupped hands. At one it appeared from the soggy cup that thye may have reused. This group is still learning how to put on a marathon. While Pittsburgh is a major sports city this marathon is not in the league of the really good marathons.

Great first-time experience

This was my first time running a marathon and I had a great experience. The first half of the course is flat and then there is a decent hill at mile 12. The next ten miles are longer gradual ups and downs and then a big downhill to the last 3 miles. The fan support along the course was great. It was a sunny, hot day and all the encouragement definitely kept me going. There are lots of water stations, about every 2 miles on the first half, and every mile on the second half. The best part about the race for me was all of the neighborhoods that the course winds through. Many of the them have festivals with tons of community support. I don't have another race to compare this one to, but I do know that I'll be back in the future! I would recommend this race to seasoned marathoners as well as rookies!

Great mid-sized marathon

I really enjoyed the Pittsburgh Marathon. The hills were not as bad as I feared and the organization of the race was excellent. The downtown start was so convenient - two blocks from my hotel. The spectators were enthusiastic and the neighborhood cheering groups- bands, cheerleaders, step dancers, percussion groups, choirs, etc. gave it a lot of personality. The marathon is big enough that I had lots of company at a 3 hour pace, but not so big it sells out six months in advance!

Challenging but a must do race

This was my first marathon and I think I picked a challenging but fun one to start with. The second half of the course'definitely said hello to me' as Meb would say. The hills aren't overly steep just long and several of them, but needless to say you have several long down hills as well that gets your quads attention. The crowd support was great from start to finish, and they take great pride in their support of you and their neighborhoods. I BQ'd in my first marathon in Pittsburgh so it wasn't overly tough. A fun course, and will definitely do it again given the opportunity. Everyone we met in Pittsburgh goes out of their way to make you feel welcome and have a good time. The race was extremely well organized.

Start half marathans at different time

I think it would be better to wheen out some runners to have the half marathan runners start after the marathan runners. They was no room to run the first couple of miles. If you are running for a time there is no way in the beginning you can set a pace without bumming into someone. Having a couple of thousand people start later would make a world of difference. I think the marathaners should start earlier at least a half hour earlier. Even if we started at 7:00 it would of helped in the heat. I do want to commend the volunteers they were wonderful hats off to them and the spectators. If it wasn't for them handing oranges and water I don't know how I would of finished. To have the support of cheering from the crowd was wonderful. I appreciate the water from the firemen and the spectators along the course that is what helped me to keep going and finish strong.

Perfect marathon!

This is my third Pittsburgh Marathon and every time I think it is the best! 2012 was just a wonderful, positive experience. The race course is just fun! You run through so many neighborhoods and fun parts of the city that you don't even feel like you're running. The organization is exceptional. They seem to cater to a runner's every need. I can't say anything negative about the race. Well, I guess if they could've done something about the high temps! The best thing about Pittsburgh is the spectators. They are everywhere, and they cheer you on as if you were their own family members! I highly recommend this race!

Great Experience, for first Marathon

This was my first Marathon and it was a great experience. The race was very well organized, the support from the community was awesome, and the finishers medal and shirt were very nice. The only negative was the heat (Out of anyones control of course). Special thanks to the spectators who brought out their hoses and sprayed us down as we ran by! Will run this marathon again without a doubt.

The City of Bridges puts on a VERY good race

My wife and I traveled from Chicago to Pittsburgh to participate in the 2012 race: I ran the full marathon and she ran the half marathon. Thanks to the overlapping race courses, we were fortunate to be able to run the first 11 miles together before we parted ways at the Birmingham bridge (S. 24th St.) for her to complete her last two miles and for me to head toward the University of Pittsburgh and the remaining 15 miles of the marathon. The half & full courses weave through many neighborhoods; the courses take you over five bridges, so you end up crossing all three rivers. It's a somewhat hilly course, though the variance in elevation between the low and high points of the course is about 200 feet the most difficult stretch occurring right after the half & full marathon courses diverge and the marathon heads toward Pitt and the Cathedral of Learning. The full marathon course goes through a lower income neighborhood called Homewood for about two miles (16.5 to 18.5, roughly). The area might give some runners pause if they drive through it prior to the race (as we did the day before); however, the people in that neighborhood who came out to cheer for the runners were among the best of the entire course (and the music played by the DJs in that neighborhood was the best of the course too, IMHO). The course support was VERY good and VERY visible throughout the race, which was incredibly important for the 2012 race because it was unseasonably hot: The temperature rose to the mid-80s according to one bank's display that we ran by, though it had cooled a bit to the high 70s by the early afternoon. The road leading to the finish line had been resurfaced in the days/weeks leading up to the race, but the temperature and direct sunlight on it was such that the tar was literally melting in the last 100-200 yards leading to the finish line it was THAT hot out there by the time I finished the race (approx. 1:40pm EST). The race marshalls had declared a RED alert at some point during the race due to the high temperatures and lack of clouds (it was sunny the entire day beautiful, but not ideal running conditions). Ambulances were seen regularly toward the back of the pack to care for any distressed runners, and the water, Gatorade, Gu, and PowerBars (and ice, at times) was plentiful for the last 8-10 miles, which helped out tremendously, esp. for us slow runners who were out on the course for nearly six hours. (I finished in 5:55:23 or thereabouts.) The expo was fairly standard stuff: Pretty well organized, nothing exceptional, but nothing lacking either. All in all, we had a wonderful experience in Pittsburgh; it's a race I suspect we'll return to run again someday.

Great marathon

I ran the 2012 Pittsburgh marathon. Virtually everything about the race was top notch. The route was somewhat hilly, but the last 5 or so miles was a net downhill. Water stops were good and I even got a beer at mile 24. And since the weather was unusually warm, there were many sprinklers and misters. The streets were wide and the route was scenic. And the medal is big and heavy. The expo was good and the post race was in a large park. There is not much they can do to improve this race. Do it!!!

Challenging course

The course is tough, but gives you a nice tour of the city. The bridges and hills -including some sharp downhill turns make for a challenging race. The organizers do a great job with communicating -lots of informative e-mails and a nice guide book-but the start is kind of a mess. The relay runners and half-marathoners really clog up the start. However, the course is marked well and has lots of volunteers and support. Fans and bands were great and line the entire course. The goodie bag is fantastic and the expo was good. This year's shirt was from Asics and is a nice wicking, long sleeve shirt. The medal is nice and solid, and is shaped like the bridge logo. The after race food was sufficent and there are plenty of fluid and gel stops on the course. I would recommend this race to anyone, and if it fixes a few minor flaws like the start it could really standout among spring marathons.

Go to Pittsburgh!

My 36th Marathon! A tough hilly course filled with lots of bands (no need for an i pod) lots of aid stations and great fans. Hats off to the fire station that sprayed water on the runners. Stay few days (only 5 hours from TO) and discover the Big Mac Museum, Cartoon Museum, Aviary and Warhol museum. 1. Expo - any expo that has window installation (with people lining up!) is a jam packed expo. Running shoes for $55 and $1 gels go straight to my heart - as well as free tuna 2. Bands - I think there were only a few spots where the bands weren't playing. A good selection. 3. Fans - Wow! Great support. Almost as good as Philly or Boston. That is saying a lot. 4. Glossy magazine - Again, concise and informative. A great addition to a running kit. Bad: 1. Timing - the Pirates had a game the same day! traffic was bad. 2. Volunteers - more needed before race to point out gear drop off prior to race

Good Race

I thought this race was well run overall, but would make a few tweaks to it. First, the expo and packet pick-up was in a congested area downtown with NO parking available. The expo was poorly set up - get your bib one spot, get your bag in another spot, get your shirt in another spot. There was no rhyme or reason to it and absolutely no flow. There were a decent number of exhibitors but they seemed overwhelmed with the sheer number of people showing up. We were at the venue when it opened and by the time we left, many booths were out of supplies. The course was good - some killer hills, but Pittsburgh is hilly. I loved the downhill to the finish and the finish festival was well done except there was basically no shade for runners who had been out in the heat for hours. The few trees were taken by spectators who appeared to be camping out to stay cool. The free food was great - bananas, fruit cups, bagels, chips, and cookies. There were also vendors set up to sell food if you wished. All in all, a great race, but I think given the time of year and the heat, it would be better to start it an hour earlier.

Can you say hills???

This was my very first marathon and although i didn't know what to expect I was not surprised by anything other than the hilly course. I also ran into paralyzing cramps in my thighs at mile 15. By 20 I had to see a medic to be rubbed out. Would this dis-qualify me from finishing the race? I got up after 5 minutes and continued the race. Although walking the remainder of the course i still can't find my name as a finisher, with an official time. Why??

Better than most!

Can't control the weather. The rolling hills in the back half caught up to me after the 200ft climb half way. Still set a new low for me. Only negative, they were only giving out the medals on the left side of the chute so I had to walk upstream to go get my medal, refreshments were on the right - I was more concerned trying to get hydrated and get sodium back in me. Great fan support and volunteers! Will recommend this race!

Please, get us some cold water or ice

While this is a very well organized and challenging marathon (a lot of little killer hills), they could have thought about the weather (70 up to 80 in the sun) and the runners not having refreshing water or gatorate at the fluid stations. How difficult is it to put the water and gatorade bottles into big iced containers? I drank hot water and had to pass on gatorade because he tasted more like urine than a refreshing drink. Just ice-cubes in zip log bags would have been nice. I got some from spectators and it was so refreshing (put them in my shirt and in my mouth). For the rest though, it is always well organized and they seem to make progress every year. So yes I will run this race again and try to break 3:30 again next year. It is a fun time but please get cold water.

A top notch marathon

As a former resident of the Pittsburgh area (McKeesport) I relished a chance to come back and run this race. I had run this race many times before it sadly passed from the scene. Welcome back in a big way. Pretty much the same course as it had been for years. The city was showcased with a few hills but overall not too tough a course. I had a good start position but there were alot of half and relay runners until the split of the races. Water and fluid stops were superb and plentiful and there were SEVERAL GU stops. The finish was nice and though I had to leave the festival at the Point looked fun. From the expo until the finish Pittsburgh was a great experince. I tend to prefer smaller races but this one was done right. Do yourself a favor and run this race.

Good, scenic, well-organized spring Marathon

The course is urban scenic (the 'hook' is running the bridges across the three rivers) and it's not a difficult course except for the climb up Forbes Ave at mile 13, but you get the benefit of the downhill back to the downtown at mile 23. It got a little hotter on May 6 than optimal - the risk of a spring Marathon. Crowds were thin in some places, better in others. There's lots of food and drink at the finish. The only real negative is that all the races - 5K, Half, and Relay start with the Marathon, and it's difficult to dodge slow traffic to get into Marathon pace in the narrow downtown streets.

Not well organized

I did the half marathon in Pittsburgh yesterday. I really wanted to like it because it is a close race. It isn't the most organized event. The course is good and the spectators really get into it. That doesn't make up for a poorly organized race. Just a few things I observed. They didn't order enough shirts and some people didn't get theirs even though the race has been full for months. They ran out of cups at some of the fluid stations and were pouring water into people's hands. They also ran out of some of the medals. Lastly, there was poor crowd control at the finishing area. More minor issues...the expo wasn't laid out very well. Also, they changed from Nike to Asics for the shirts and it is the cheapest one I have ever received. All said, I wouldn't recommend this race.

Well Done, Pittsburgh!

I ran this race, as Pittsburgh is my home town. It was fun seeing all the neighborhoods. I do recommend this race to others. Pros: 1. Nice shirt. 2. Nice medal. 3. Easy, organized packet pickup. 4. Many nice hotels available to stay the night before. I stayed at the William Penn and strongly recommend (they provided 3:00 p.m. late check out, pasta dinner, race breakfast, and all staff were extremely helpful and pleasant!) 5. Nice course with many bands and awesome neighborhood support (Homewood was my favorite, but they were all wonderful!) 6. Well stocked aid stations with friendly volunteers. 7. Many medical areas (great to have vasoline available). 8. It was a HOT, sunny day and during the second half of the full marathon, many had garden hoses out to cool off the runners...awesome!). 9. Great medical area and staff at finish...my knees are happier today due to early icing! 10. Potatoe chips at miles 24 and 25...welcome relief...I needed salt! 11. Aid station frequency increased second half of full marathon course...awesome! Cons (without these, organization would have been a '5'...would have rated '4.5' even with these two items): 1. Need more portapoties at start (I waited 45 minutes...which is unusually long). 2. Due to the heat (people were taking cups of water and pouring on head due to heat), aid station at mile 10 ran out of cups. Recommend adding another aid station at mile 9. Normally not needed, but due to hot day, would have been nice. Overall, a great event!

Pittsburgh Marathon Full - Highly Recommended

Course - One of the best. Very scenic, not too hilly (2 main hills are not too bad), well marked. Lots of hydration stations. Spectators - Great! Many along much of the course. Very enthusiastic. Organization - Good. Good communications before the race. Lots of signage. Nice post-race vendor/meeting area. Large expo. Goodies - Big, heavy metal. Decent post-race food, though no bottles of Gatorade or the like (strange as this is almost the case at any race I've entered). I highly recommend this race!

All problems from previous years fixed

I ran the half in 2011 and complained about the corral system. I ran it again today in 2012 and want to say that they fixed it to perfection. Great course, super finish (even though it had to be changed from 2011), super spectators, loved the challenge of running 5 different bridges, loved the Irish band in the West End Village, and honestly can't say anything negative about the experience. Thank you race organizers and volunteers.

A plain great race

Just like Detroit, Pittsburgh is a great race, course, and pretty much everything about it. If someone is more concerned with a great experience than perceived reputation, then this is the race for you. I can not say one bad thing about this marathon.

Lives up to the hype

I will preface this review by saying that my purpose during a marathon is not to be competitive but rather help people along the way by having a positive attitude. I finished in 4 hours and 46 minutes. Overall, this marathon lives up to a lot of the hype that precedes it. Positives: 1) Excellent crowd control at the end of the race. Absolutely no problems meeting up with friends/family and getting out of the downtown area. 2) Solid fan support although as is typical, little support from those who came to run/support the relay portion or the half-marathon. I guess these people just don't understand/value/respect the marathon culture. 3) Far above-average fan support from the people living in impoverished neighborhoods. Little, to no, support from people living in wealthier neighborhoods. In fact, one wealthy family who were eating their breakfast on their patio glared at me when I apparently disturbed them by attempting to engage them in conversation. Of course, many supporters line the streets of middle/ 4) Stayed at the Knights Inn motel which was very affordable ($65) and 20 minutes to the start line! 5) Very little traffic congestion when we arrived downtown at 6:15am! 6) Great course layout. You run through the run-down industrial part of town early when you are all hyped up so it doesn't matter anyway. Then when you run through it toward the end of the race, there is considerable fan support. 7) The last 8 miles or so are either flat or downhill!!! I wanted to walk but only walk uphill's so I ran it in at the end! 8) I had quite a few pictures taken of me during the race. Negatives: 1) Very nice technical shirt should have been a short sleeve shirt because it is nearly summer and the sleeves are really short for tall people. 2) While the expo was large, I was overly unimpressed. There were few other marathons marketed at the expo and I found the goods offered redundant. 3) A song being pumped through the loud speakers the morning of the race had some female saying the word $hit several times. There is no reason to have language like that at a family event. 4) I am really becoming frustrated with races that offer only one flavor of sports drink. And it really stinks for those of us who can't stand lemon-lime. 5) A Sunday race and we still have to pay for parking? To me that is just unacceptable. Cities are already getting tremendous revenue from the runners and it seems like the race director could negotiate free parking on marathon day. 6) Spaghetti dinner at the Spaghetti Warehouse would have been cheaper if I had just ordered off the menu than pre-ordering when registering for the marathon.

This was a great race!

This was my third marathon and first Pittsburgh marathon. From start to finish, this race was tremendous. I have family from Pittsburgh, which was why I decided to do this race. I couldn't be more happy with that decision! I have run NYC and Marine Corps previously, and I thought the Pittsburgh expo was on par with NYC and nicer than Marine Corps. Also, the amount of race swag was really stunning (a very nice long-sleeve tech tee, a cinch sack backpack, nike socks and a $10 gift card to Dick's). The start moved seamlessly. The course was interesting and in spite of the rain, people still came out to cheer! The course was challenging but not ridiculous. I felt well prepared after running the hills in Central Park all winter. I loved the DJ at the mile 11 hill. Gritty rap music was the perfect choice for the slog up that hill! I thought the finish line was great. I met my family at the finish festival, which worked really well. A couple of really minor notes: -Perhaps place a few more photographers along the course. I was a bit disappointed that there were only a few pictures to purchase when the online photos became available. -As someone who is very familiar with Pittsburgh, I love that you offered Eat 'n Park cookies with the post-race food. That said, and this is probably just personal preference, after a marathon the thought of Eat 'n Park cookies was a bit nauseating. I would absolutely recommend this marathon to my friends!

Very Well Run and Well Monitored Race

This marathon was a lot of fun. There are bands throughout the route and I really mean throughout the route. There were probably about 30 bands in total. I am a back of the packer (running in about 5 hours) and in some races it gets a little lonely. In this race, I always had plenty of company on the course and there were cheering fans along the entire route. There are some hills but nothing too difficult for a New Englander. Best of all, there are long down hills in the last five miles, helping to roll you to the finish line. The aid stations were frequent and well staffed. I started with a pacesetter who was a lot of fun - Marie. She really knew how to engage a group. Unfortunately I faded and was not able to keep up with the group. I definitely give this race very high ratings. I started with a pacesetter who was a lot of fun - Marie. She really knew how to engage a group. Better and Better

This was my 10th Pgh marathon. Race keeps getting better and better. The race organizers really listen and make improvements. Volunteers: A+ Course: A+ Starting Line: B- (Coral A did not have enough portajohns. Other runners have complained about the congestion in the other corals.) Bands: A (Just give me indie, teenage rock!) Spectators: B (Not bad for a rainy day) Finish Line: A- (Need signs to the shuttles.) Pre-Race Info: B+ (much improved with parking info, maps, need to tell the runners the actual number to expect at the starting line so we know how to prepare for parking) Casual Public Interest: C- (I really think they need to encourage more spectators to come downtown. Make it a real event. But, you need to add something. There is so much concern about traffic/parking in Pgh. There should be an easy way in and out. Just say you will have fireworks.) I wish it were less crowded; but I'm happy more and more people are running. I just think if you try to include more than 20k runners it will be a nightmare. I prefer the smaller marathons.

Fantastic 'Must-Run' City Marathon

Kudos to everyone involved in this wonderful marathon. There is nothing to complain about. It's really terrific. I took my family to Pittsburgh for the weekend and it's a wonderful small city. We were so impressed with the pre-race communications, the expo and the kind atmosphere of Pittsburgh. Race day brought more of the same, with excellent bands throughout the course, lively/engaged volunteers and a tour-guide running through the neighborhoods. The hill at 11 can hurt your time, but you get the chance to go down its sister hill around mile 22. Thank you to everyone involved in making the event so memorable. Absolutely an A+.

PIttsburgh should be the model for other marathons

The 2011 Pittsburgh Marathon was one of the best organized, nearly perfect marathons I have run. The course was fun and interesting as usual. The start and finish were flawless, and even the slight rain throughout the race helped make the humidity manageable. I was able to run my goal time and qualify for Boston. There were plenty of fluid stops with smiling, encouraging faces, great music throughout, and a wonderful finish line area. My only minor complaint is that the first ten miles were very crowded. That's great that so many people want to run through this great city, but it was a little scary at times because of the pack you found yourself in the middle of for the entire first ten miles. I found myself so looking forward to the time when the half-marathoners left. The rest of the race was very comfortable. I agree with the previous comment about the finish. It was nice going back over the bridge, but the finish in 2003 at Heinz Field was very special! Oh, and to the previous writer....'fat-bottom' girls rock! Shame on you! Anyway....thanks Pittsburgh, for a great marathon experience! And Mario's for a fun,post-marathon celebration!

Run PGH

This was my seventh marathon and first Pittsburgh. I thought it was well-organized, had good crowd support, and a nice course. The people of Pittsburgh should be proud of this one and for their support. I would definitely run this marathon again and would recommend it to friends. Actually, I will probably just sign up when 2012 registration begins. I really didn't have any criticisms, so here are a couple of notes: 1. The start begins downtown, so if you're going to use a Garmin, turn it on early so it can pick up a signal among the buildings. It took mine about 15 minutes to load. 2. The course is hilly. It's Pittsburgh. But the hills keeps you honest and nothing that a prepared runner cannot overcome through training. The course takes you on a great tour of Pittsburgh and you hit most of the neighborhoods, some very scenic and some not as scenic. You get a very significant downhill at mile 21, right when you need it. 3. I don't run marathons for the medals, but this is the best medal from any race I've received (besides Boston, but that's for other reasons). It's really beautiful. 4. I would echo a previous commenter that the one thing I would change is dividing the relay teams into different corrals based on expected pace. A lot of people's marathon pace is still faster than anothers 5 mile pace. I spent the first half mile weaving and passing a lot of slower relay teams and half marathoners. 5. I didn't have to experience the cramped finish lines from previous years, but this one was well-organized, fully stocked and had lots of space. Trying to leave, traffic was pretty bad, however. 6. There is no better way to reward yourself for finishing a marathon than by stopping at Primanti Bros. Thanks Pittsburgh. I'll be back.

Challenging Course, Awesome Views

Pittsburgh Marathon was my second marathon, and it outperformed my first by a long shot. The weather threatened, but as is Pittsburgh weather, the early morning rain dissipated to simply overcast cool conditions. The one time Pittsburgh's lack of sun is what you want. The weather may have deterred some spectators from coming out, and Oakland was a bit weak because of the week-later race date, but all-in-all the race had tons of support. The Officials, the neighborhoods, the spectators, the music, etc. was amazing, and it was really a good motivation to keep pace. Pittsburgh may be considered 'hilly', but honestly it is a totally fair course. I went under 3:30 (just barely), which was 45 minutes under my PR from Richmond. Pittsburgh allows for a smart runner to perform well, but if you charge the hills, or make mistakes, the course takes from you. It's totally fair, in my opinion, which may be worth nothing. In comparison to Richmond 'the friendliest marathon', which I believe was very friendly, Pittsburgh may be able to claim that away with their great fan support, and lack of 'dead' spots. Locations that I thought would be empty of fans were popping, and it made the miles go right by. I do have two complaints. The lack of water bottles at the finish. The OVER security of the pre-race location. Love ya Pittsburgh. Next year it's me and my friends pushing through.

Huge volunteer support, great fans

Running this race, I'd never have guessed that the PIttsburgh Marathon had gone on hiatus just a few years back. Clearly, the city wants this race to work- I've never seen as much support, almost consistently spread through the neighborhoods along the course. Some of the pros: a generous number of water/Gatorade stations, plus four GU stations. I judge fan support by who comes out on a rainy, Sunday morning - and quite a few did: lots of cheers, more than a few oranges, lots of music. Even in some of the economically depressed areas, residents were out cheering us on. That said, Pittsburgh is a city of hills - there's a good variety of up and down here, but only a few grinders (the Birmingham Bridge followed by the Forbes Ave. climb into Oakland at mile 11 stands out). Not a PR, but a very enjoyable run on a cloudy, misty day. Though downtown hotels had sold out, we found easy accommodations out by the airport - a quick drive into the city. I'd recommend this race,

Perfection

I wanted to make Pittsburgh my 1st marathon because it's (A) the area I'm from and (B) it is a challenging course with an excellent reputation all around. I had to train in the worst conditions possible - 5 hours North of Detroit, in snow country USA and all alone. Most of my runs were in the snow and below 20 degrees. With that said, I plan on doing the training every year until I can no longer run. The pain and frustration is worth it. The Pitt Marathon is an unbelievable experience. I have absolutely no gripes about this race. There are always some things that can go better or be tweaked, but really, this is as close to perfection as you can get. Crowd Support - A+ Course - A+ Water Stations - A Website and Facebook - A++ Weather - It is what it is. Parking - A (Lots of options) Medals - A+ Expo - B Organization - A+++ Goodie Bag & Shirt - A+ I have nothing bad to say about this race, and would invite anyone who may have a question to email me. If your looking for a race to remember, look no further.

A tough challenge but excellent course/planning

This is the first time I've run the full marathon. I've run the half the past two years since the race started back up after its little vacation. The starting line and finish line: changes made the whole experience SO much better. I do agree with another reviewer regarding the corrals. There were definitely people in faster corrals that probably shouldn't have been there, but I'm not sure how you could really handle this since the racer puts down their expected time. All in all, it was a great event as it has been in past years. Crowds thinned out at certain areas, but that was not surprising, seeing the rain we had. Volunteers at the aid stations were awesome and very eager to hand off drinks, gels, and oranges. If you want to run a marathon with spectacular views and get a tour of the entire city, run the Pittsburgh Marathon on May 6, 2012.

Terrific race!

Pittsburgh, I am now a believer. The course was relatively hilly, with one real challenging climb. The city came out to support this great race, and the volunteers were everywhere! I have run in Nashville several times but the music here was more frequent and just as good. I would travel to Pittsburgh again for this race without even thinking twice.

Better Than Ever

This is nearly a perfect race. The course is interesting and challenging but fair. The on-course support (both official and unofficial) was first-rate. The nicest medal I've ever received and a great shirt. The earlier complaints about the start and finish were accounted for beautifully. Coming over the Clemente Bridge to Gen. Robinson for the finish was a stroke of genius. My only complaint is that all of the first-leg relay runners apparently were placed in the first corral, which created some unnecessary congestion. Hats off to the RD for the best version of the Pittsburgh Marathon yet.

Big time potential

The course: This is a great, challenging course with a limited amount of extended flat mileage and plenty of incline (mostly gradual and extended). Unlike Boston, the more challenging climbs come in the first half of the race, but the last 4 miles are very similar to Boston (an extended downhill followed by a few flat miles to finish). While often a difficult strategy to employ, you can really make up some time on the last 4 miles if you conserve energy on the uphills early on. Pros: (1) More than adequate water stations and good volunteer support (2) Best finisher medal I've seen (19th marathon) (3) Live music throughout the course (4) Decent crowd support (5) Race bibs with your name on it (6) Relatively inexpensive to stay in Pittsburgh (can you believe I paid $5 for O/N parking??) Cons: (1) Sub-par post-race food/water setup. There was water in cups right at the finish, but as you moved along towards the end where the carbs were, there was no more water to be found. Poor planning there. Also, a warm fruit cup is not appealing. (2) Congested finish. At around the 3 hour point, the finish was clogged with relatively slow moving walkers and half marathoners. The thrill of finishing a marathon is dampened somewhat having to work thru a crowd of walkers. This could easily be remedied by creating a marathoners-only finishing lane. To summarize, while not the best place to be looking for a PR, this is an interesting course with alot of character. I ran this race in 2009 and I think the crowd support has grown some since then. If Pittsburghers come to embrace this race the way they do in Boston, this will become a special event you definitely won't want to miss. There were a few, fairly easily remedied organizational issues, but as a whole the race was well run. Thumbs up and thanks, Pittsburgh!

Great race, great challenge, great city

They do a great job hosting this race - the pre-race setup is good, there are more than adequate fluid/fuel/portajohns on the course, and spectators come out. Pittsburgh is a hilly city, so while they do everything possible to stay to a flat course, you can expect to do a lot of climbing, often in slow and steady rises, especially from miles 11 through 20. My one complaint is that they had a lot of walkers on the course, and they were finishing the half-marathon at the same time the marathoners were coming in. That led to a very crowded final-mile finish, with a lot of walkers in the middle of the course and walking three and four-abreast. Not ideal. But other than that, a good, enjoyable run in a great city.

Fabulous City, Fabulous marathon !

This was my second marathon in Pittsburgh and I forgot how hilly it was... but the race is fun, organization was great (18,000 runners at the start in all) and the crowds have gotten bigger since I last ran it. It would be nice to finish INSIDE Heinz Field, which I did in 2003, but overall this is a great race... I loved every minute of it. :-)

Beautiful and challenging course

This was a really great race! The course was on very wide roads, so there was minimal runner congestion. There were plenty of fluid stations and 4 places for GU. The hills were tough, but the views, especially crossing the West End Bridge, were amazing! In case the race directors are reading, a few minor suggestions: The steel drummers that were at mile 25 were fantastic! I wish they were at the base of the hill at mile 11, too. Also, water at the start would have been nice.

Nice marathon.

Last year I did the 1/2 and this year I did the full. The organizers did a nice job both years. The full does have one large hill (at about mile 11) but the scenery nice. The finish line went from downtown (last year) to the area by Heinz Field, which is an improvement. I would recommend this course to all. Pittsburgh was a welcoming city and very easy to get around. Nice job, race organizers.

Tough course, great City

The race was well organized and well executed from registration to finish. The web page provided ample amount of information and the Expo was nice. Support on the course was great and aid stations were well located and well stocked. The course is the toughest I ran so far but that's how Pittsburgh is. Having a race in mid May is also a risk in terms of weather. This is the wet season in this part of the country and we had 90% humidity on race day (and 65F temperature). But if you want to see and run Pittsburgh, this is a great event even if you are not going to PR.

Course that gives a complete tour of the city

Excellent job with the course itself. Course really tours all of the neighborhoods of Pittsburgh. Course is hilly but the organizers really made it about as flat as they could for Pittsburgh. Logistics to start area and parking were excellent. Prefer the old finish in Point State Park over the Heinz Field parking lot finish: lots of grass and trees instead of concrete. One improvement to be made at finish as finishers were not allowed back into the area where Gatorade was once exiting for the food. That seemed silly and potentially dangerous (if it was a hot day). However, there were a couple of tables with jugs of water and cups outside this area so that made it acceptable. Shuttle from finish back to downtown (about 1.5 miles) was fairly conveniently located on the other side of Heinz field - about 0.5 miles from the finish. Expo itself was one of the best I've seen: pretty much anything you would want relative to running. Parking and getting in and out of the expo on Saturday was also painless. Fan support was very good especially considering below average weather conditions (for fans) with drizzle to light rain for most of the race. Although a native of Pittsburgh, I've trained primarily on the flats of South Jersey the past 7 years. Based on that I feel the hills cost me about 5 minutes off my time (my times range from 3:40 to 4:05 the past 5 years). Recommend the marathon especially when compared to other medium to large marathons that I've run (Marine Corp, Philadelphia, Richmond, New Jersey).

Gotta run Pittsburgh - great surprise

A group of us traveled to Pittsburgh to do both the full and half marathon expecting an industrial old city. Wow, what a pleasant surprise! City is full of wonderful history, culture, architecture and super nice people. Course was great and people very friendly. We stayed at the Springhill Suites by Marriot. The staff there was super accommodating. Perfectly located between start and finish. Lots of water/gat stations, spectators, porta- potty's and bands. Very well organized and probably one of the best races I've been to. Excellent expo and lots to do in city the days before. Must go to Strip district to enjoy all the outdoor markets and savor the local favors. Don't miss this one.

Fix the Corral System

Positives: Much improved finish area (extreme kudos for that); great course. Negative: Corral system. I was in Corral B, having to run around many fat-bottomed girls who were placed in corral A. It seems that all marathon relay teams' first runners were placed in corral A. Bad idea. I was extremely frustrated for the first mile and a half.

Well organized race - unique course

The organization of this race was outstanding from the expo, to the pasta dinner, packet pickup, start line, finish line,... The course was fantastic. It traveled through downtown and surrounding areas. Pittsburgh has some really neat areas. It crossed over the bridges 4 times. I anticipated a very hilly course after reading the reviews so I held back in the first half. After finishing the largest hill going to the University of Pittsburgh area, I thought this is not so bad. (Atlanta, Jackson, and Little Rock had as many hills or more) I took off and had a 3 minute negative splits race and finished with a 'normal' time for me. It was amazing this race was advertised as having 18,000 runners yet I was never constrained and quickly settled into my pace. They had a corral system based on your times and I believe they started a couple of corrals at a time. The weather was predicted as rain, but we only saw some light rain early on, the temperature held steady and even some sunshine at the end. I would definitely do this race again.

First 10 miles needs 're-engineering'

(It rained in 2010 as well, but this is Pittsburgh, after all). That wasn't the problem: the start line was, as were the early miles. The start was a mess, with corrals randomly distributed. Then, while the walkers set off at 6am, the rest of the field (full, half, relay) all set off at 7, and the streets aren't wide enough for that kind of stampede - great opportunity to tread on heels. The crowd started to thin at M6-7, and only really cleared at M10, when the halfers peeled off. The Expo is excellent, the atmosphere superb, the crowd support positively uplifting for the entire 26.2 - very interactive, and all having fun. But Dick's needs to work on the front half of the race before it gets too excited about growing this race through 2020.

Kudos to the organizers and City of Pittsburgh!

This was my 24th marathon and first Pittsburgh. The course is tough and the rain did not help. With that being said, the race organizers did a great job from start to finish. I was also so impressed by the local musical talent showcased throughout the course, as well as the volunteers. The spectators were wonderful, especially at the end of the race when you are coming across the bridge. Just remember, this race is NOT for sissies!

Wonderfully organized in a beautiful city.

The rain in 2011 definitely helped keep me cool on the hills. Not an easy course by any stretch of the imagination, but the finish is one of the easiest I've ever experienced. The organization this year was also excellent. Lots of very long aid stations with energy gels, food and drink. My wife thought that the new finish was not as friendly to spectators, but for the runners, it was easy and organized. Lots of bands along the course made it fun. Spectator were great, especially considering the rain. I still wish that the race could take advantage of at least one of the spectacular city parks that Pittsburgh has to offer, but the course is still nicely representative of this great city.

Love the course. Great fan support. Lots of bands playing along the way. I wish we could have had a stadium finish and not just a parking lot finish but it was cool how the finish line was right after crossing the last bridge. Not much direction at the end of the race to find food, water or shuttles back to hotel. Looking forward to running again next year.

Really Fun Race... Tough Course

Of the four marathons I've run, this was by far the best organized and centered around making the runner's experience great. Terrific in-race support, great course markers, and very solid logistics.

City of Champions lives up to its name

Having run both the 2010 and 2011 Pittsburgh Marathons, it is clear that the race director, and the city itself, are jointly making all of the needed changes to put put this race on the map. The expo was fantastic, there was a great goody bag, and the friendly volunteers made the pre-race easy. Parking was rough on race day and the start line was far from the parking. The new course offers a great start, although waves (like Disney) would be preferred. The volunteers and spectators are great along the course, and the finish in 2011 is amazing compared to 2010. The medal at the end is fantastic! Come run the City of Bridges in 2012 - it will only get better, I'm sure!

Fantastic Organization, Spectators, and Race

I feel compelled to write a review for this marathon. I have run 18 marathons and this is the first review I've ever posted. I signed up for this race knowing it wasn't an easy course. There were no negative surprises in the course; the second half is pretty hilly. That being said, the course was never congested (at least not at my pace), it went through really fun areas, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The spectators are lively & fantastic as well! The organization was top notch. The communication was timely, thorough, and their Facebook posts generated tons of enthusiasm for me and others. I highly recommend this race and think people contemplating running this will not be disappointed.

Great City, Great People

The Pittsburgh Marathon is not for the faint of heart but it is one of the most unique courses I have run. You get to see quite the neighborhoods throughout the journey (although I only did the half). I am pumped to run it again this year.

Great course with a lousy finish line

Growing up watching runners come over the bridge and enter Point State Park, I thought it was the coolest thing ever. For a race like Pittsburgh to now have its finish line in some random place near the convention center just sucks. Fortunately that's my only complaint: expo was great, medal was excellent, and crowd support was decent given the nasty weather.

Tough course, fantastic experience

I've run this marathon both years since it resumed. The course is challenging - a big uphill stretch between mile 11 and 13 - but it also ends with a nice, long downhill followed by a flat mile. The crowd support is great throughout, especially on the north side, where the mayor lives, in the south side, where you pass all the pubs, and Oakland, where the University of Pittsburgh is located. But the highlight is Bloomfield, at mile 23. This is the Italian neighborhood in Pittsburgh, and they show up in HUGE numbers to cheer you on before the big downhill. Just down the street, you pass Church Brew Works, a former church turned into a brewery, where they hand out small cups of beer. My first year on this course, I was really struggling at this point and that swig of beer helped me remember that running is fun, and got me through to the finish line. Don't expect a PR, but this is a great race experience.

What a great place to run

Very beautiful course. Best shirt I've ever gotten from a race. Organization deserved more than 5 stars. Too bad they can't help that it rained in 2010. However, there were still people out on the street cheering you on!

Wet

This was my first marathon so I had little to no idea what to expect. I trained for just about everything, except running 20+ miles in driving rain. Even with the rain this was a tremendous experience that I will remember forever. The crowd support was great, and the water stations on the course were frequent and very well staffed. Even with the wet feet I had a great time, and in fact the rain was actually refreshing due to the hot and humid temperature at the start of the race. I had heard some complaints about congestion at the finish line, but this was mostly from people who ran the half marathon where a higher number of people finish around the same time. When I finished I had no problem getting food and drink at the finish line. The finisher's medal was also great - it reminds me more of an Olympic medal than a marathon finisher's medal. Can't wait until next year; two thumbs up.

First Marathon Experience + Pittsburgh = Amazing

This was my first long-distance running event, but after years of running for enjoyment, my friends convinced me to run one... and let me tell you that it was AWESOME. The fact that it rained the whole time just made things more enjoyable. My time was not as good as I'd hoped since the wet weather unexpectedly blistered my toes to the point that after mile 13 I could only run flat-footed, but I wouldn't trade away any of the experience. Plus, I'm not entirely upset with a first time finish of 3 hours and 48 minutes - it just gives me a time to beat next time around!

Awesome!!!!!

The Pittsburgh Half Marathon was my very first race I've ever run. This experience changed my life forever. The course was very nice - there's so much to see and the City of Pittsburgh is beautiful. The crowds of people cheering you on are something that just brings tears to my eyes. I ran 11 miles in rain and these people stood out there cheering us on; it was the most awesome experience ever. Well organized from start to finish, and the expo at the convention center was really nice as well. I can't wait to come back next year.

My favorite marathon

This was my first full marathon. I had previously done 6 half marathons and I have since done one more full marathon, and Pittsburgh was the best experience of all of them. The course was perfect - for every uphill there was a downhill to go charging down. Fan support was HUGE despite the pouring rain, and the early start made me comfortable enough to know that I would finish in a timely manner. The only thing I would improve upon is the finish line experience; there was not much food to rejuvenate with.

Great Adjustments from Last Year's Marathon!

This was an excellent race again, but even better than 2009. Improvements in the course included taking the dead-leg west of the West End Bridge out (no crowd support) and replacing it with the Clemente and Warhol Bridges (huge crowd support!). Masterful! (In fairness to 2009, I think one of the bridges was being worked on.) Other improvements: (1) The bands were up and playing early, and there were many more of them. (2) The finishing medals were 1000% better than last year. I was impressed and shocked when I saw them. (3) The water stations didn't use those horrible styrofoam cups this time. (4) Crowd support seemed to be even better even though the weather was much worse than 2009. (5) The finishing area was better than 2009, but it still needs to be improved. (6) Much better job with on-course porta-johns. This race was very fun and there was a very diverse group of folks on the course simultaneously, with the relay, half and whole marathon cutting loose at the same time. The shirt was of nice quality, but I am not a fan of the electric-blue color. I'll get over it. See you again in 2011!

A first-class event

Overall, an excellent event... and I'm from Cleveland, saying this about Pittsburgh! The Good: 1) The course: beautiful, and featuring bridges and interesting parts of the city 2) Spectators: on a terrible, rainy day, to me they seemed plentiful and very enthusiastic and friendly 3) Fluid stops and bathrooms: there were plenty, and there were great volunteers at them - although at several of the stops, the water I drank had a really bad aftertaste... I don't know what that was about 4) Medal: a very heavy piece of hardware - well done 5) Organizational communication: emails before the race as well as a comprehensive booklet and website with all necessary info 6) A Great deal for signing up: they had a booth at the Chicago Marathon expo last fall, and if you signed up at that expo, you got a 50-buck gift card to Dick's; so along w the 10-buck one in the goody bag, I paid 75 bucks for the race, and got 60 bucks in gift cards back-the cheapest marathon I've done! I would not have ran this race without that incredible incentive last fall (those ladies at the expo did a nice sell job!), and I'm glad I did! The bad: 1) Parking: with all of the different races starting at similar times, it was a logjam to park on race morning; I ended up having to park at a garage a long walk away; and had to hustle to start line 2) Packet pick up: it's a general complaint for me about many races; I HATE when race morning packet pickup is not offered - at least for those who are coming from out of town for the race. I've had races where, if a race organizer was contacted, he'd make an exception, but others won't budge. I actually had to drive in on friday, get my pack, and then go home, and then come back race morning - a pain! But I have work obligations that made it necessary. I understand the reasons for not offering it, but I wonder: if someone is traveling into town for a race, can't something be done to make the experience better for them with regard to this? 3) Goody bag: kind of flimsy for a race of this size; but I do love the gift card - also, many races give race posters to marathon runners, but here they were charging for them, which I did not care for The Ugly: 1) The finish line: I know that they had an issue, but it was extremely congested, and the food was not great. Overall, it was my least favorite part of the experience. I think the last image of the race should be positive, and it's a shame when it is not. All this being said, I tremendously enjoyed the course, and the race itself, and the people, and the entertainment on the course. In short, I truly enjoyed the race!

awesome experience

This was my first-ever half marathon, and I wasn't sure what to expect. The whole experience was great, from the online information to the expo, to the incredible crowd support. I was lucky and got through the finish right before they re-routed people, so I have no complaints about that. I think they did a fantastic job, and it's just one more thing to add to the list of why Pittsburgh is such a wonderful place. I'm so glad that I made my first half marathon my hometown race!

fantastic all around

The course: challenging, with some hills (both up and down to burn hamstrings and quads), and a very nice tour of the city. The crowd: up even more from a good turnout last year despite more rain; there were people nearly lining all 26 miles (minus bridges and one stretch on the south side)! The guys in Homewood (I think out every year) were grilling again - it does make you hungry!! Water stops: plentiful, with Gatorade, gels later in the race, and even some churches/neighborhoods adding their own stops. Stuff: great shirt, even better medal (really, really nice - barely even "tagged" with the sponsor), and Nike socks. New stat: "Bomb time" defined as the time spent on the side of the road waiting for the all-clear - as in "chip time minus bomb time = running time!" It actually shows great organization that my bomb time was about 2 minutes and I didn't even realize they'd re-routed the course until after I was done. Overall, a great race, and one that I'll probably try to do annually.

Great first-marathon experience

The Pittsburgh Marathon definitely delivered for my first-ever marathon. Despite the rainy and hot/humid conditions, the crowd support was phenomenal and not just at the beginning of the course. Spectators covered the vast majority of the course. Bands were stationed about every mile - not to mention the other groups that came out to cheer us on like cheerleaders, school groups, etc. Organization was great; I had no trouble whatsoever. I think it speaks to the tremendous organization and quick thinking of the organizers that they had to move both finish lines DURING the race because of a bomb scare. They did so flawlessly - I never knew anything was amiss until we got back to our hotel room and saw the news. Course was great. There is a steeper hill at 12, but it is maybe a quarter-of-a-mile long and then there are just long, gradual hills after that, with shorter downhills to recover. The last several miles are downhill or flat, so that was fantastic. Overall, pretty darn flat for a Pittsburgh race. Water/Gatorade stops were frequent. I didn't see the GU stops, but I don't use GU, so I wasn't looking for them. I did see the two PowerBar stations. I did think it was nice that at least the second station was just handing out unwrapped bars - a big help when tired hands and rain made it difficult to grip packaging. Best swag I've ever gotten at a race. Nike socks, a $10 Dicks Sporting Goods gift card, and a really, really nice, long-sleeved, technical shirt (Nike and fitted for men or women, which is great). The best was the medal - on a really nice ribbon printed with the race's bridges logo and a really heavy, nice medal. Seriously, this medal could double as a weapon it is so heavy. I have had so many comments on the medal alone about how nice it is. Everyone involved with the race and the City of Pittsburgh deserves a big pat on the back. Well done! I will be back!

Nice course change, adding the bridges

It was a nice touch, adding the 9th Street and 6th Street Bridges onto the course. There were plenty of water stops, volunteers and great music along the way. No problem at the start, but I ran into a crowd right after crossing the finish line. Keep up the good work. See you next year.

Nice race, GREAT city

Pittsburgh is a very scenic city, and the race organizers did a masterful job taking the course through many interesting neighborhoods and past many of the attractions while still avoiding any really punishing hills (which Pittsburgh has in spades). There's only one significant hill on the course, and that's heading into Oakland between miles 12 and 13. I don't know why the elevation profile shows it being so long; it's no more than a half-mile long and not terribly steep. There's also a wonderful, long, downhill piece in miles 23 and 24, which came at a perfect time for me. Traffic on the course was never a problem; all roads on the course were closed to cars. Crowd support on the course was great, with lots of enthusiastic people and music the whole way. Nice, beefy finisher medal and a good Nike long-sleeve tech shirt, plus a $10 gift card from Dick's Sporting Goods. I never saw the promised GU and PowerBar stops along the second half of the course, but maybe I had the blinders on and just missed them. Fluid stops were plentiful and well stocked and staffed. Extra credit to the race for starting on time too. Pre-race parking seemed like it may have been a bit tricky, I had my driver just drop me off half of a mile from the start once we ran into sticky traffic. Recommended race.

Completely awesome for the most part

The Course: I was a little torn on what exactly to rate the course. There were two significant portions of the race that went through very visually un-interesting parts of the city (West Carson Street and between Penn Avenue and Highland Park). I live here and know that there would have been a few more favorable places to go. However, I know it was routed that way for a reason. Pittsburgh is much hillier than people think, and the organization did an incredible job of finding a route that kept the hills to a minimum. Taking these routes was a necessity to do that. I did enjoy the course overall, though. Even living here, it still took me by surprise how rolling much of it was, considering it was said to be pretty flat (save for the hill up into Oakland). The Organization: Everything went as smoothly as possible throughout the race and I had a wonderful time. The only issue I had was with the parking, but not because there wasn't enough of it (on the contrary, there was plenty to go around for racers, volunteers and spectators). Race started at 7:30. I got downtown at about 6:15 and sat in traffic for 45 minutes to go about four blocks. We were getting a little nervous because of how close to the starting time it was getting. If we didn't get a spot at the garage we were going to, there would have been no time to go to another one with how slowly the traffic was moving. We lucked out and got one of the last dozen spots in that particular garage. Not sure what everyone who missed out did after that. There are so many garages downtown within walking distance of the start, but everyone was trying to go to the same two or three. Maybe assigning particular garages to runners at check-in would relieve a little congestion and make sure garages wouldn't have to turn people away with little time to find an alternative. Pittsburgh isn't friendly to walking to downtown, so unless you're staying in a hotel there, driving is necessary. Spectators: They were amazing and plentiful, even in the driving rain that persisted for much of the day. Miscellaneous: Race packet is nice, and the medal is a well-designed, heavy (seriously, it's like an anchor) chunk of hardware

Well Done, Pittsburgh

Overall this was a very positive experience. Perhaps three-fourths of the runners were in the half marathon and they did not split off until the 10.5-mile mark. Race organizers should study the possibility of having the half marathoners start at the 13.1-mile mark and finish with the marathoners. This would reduce the bottleneck and perhaps improve times (although I do not know how feasible it is from a technology/timekeeping perspective). Bib pick-up was a little hectic (but aren't they all?). Great bands along the way - they always seemed to appear just when I needed a boost. The fans. Wow. The fans were beyond great, especially given that it was raining for most of the race. Kudos to the course designers for snaking us through all parts of the city. Also, a big thumbs up to the city/police/race organizers for traffic control - seemed wildly logical. I'll be back....

Run Pittsburgh; Avoid the Doubletree

The organization for this race was great. They did a fantastic job with the logistics, considering the growth. My only suggestion would be to consider a wave start as the first five or six miles were very crowded and I was unable to hold a consistent pace due to the high volume of people. I got to the starting line 30 minutes before the race but was unable to get to the proper starting corral, so I had to start way in the back. The course is well planned with some small rolling hills, one steep one and a nice downhill finish. There are more than enough fluid stations. Crowd support was great, considering the weather. My only complaint is with the hotel. The Doubletree in Pittsburgh had the most inhospitable staff. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. The staff were downright nasty - no late check out option, no coffee, bad service all the way around... I could go on. Run the Pittsburgh Marathon - avoid the Doubletree.

Very Nice Experience

This was my third marathon. I ran the half in Pittsburgh last year and noticed many improvements this year, such as a finish line that was not under the convention center, a family reunion area, and trash cans (there was nowhere to throw trash in 2009 and there were banana peels everywhere). This year the organizers created a "VIP area" where people could get choice seating for a price, which I didn't like because of commercialism. There were a lot of runners! I was at mile 8 and the field was still fairly dense. The medal is very nice this year (the half marathon medal was pathetic last year). I enjoyed this marathon even though the weather presented me with a challenge. Living within 40 miles of Pittsburgh, I wanted to do this marathon and I am happy I did.

Support was awesome!!

I want to thank all of the cheering fans and volunteers. Without you I may not have made it through... especially the woman on the last stretch; she started to talk to me when I was at my worst. She was running on the side along with me and her words of encouragement meant everything to me. I thanked her for talking to me and she responded, "Well, I tried to talk to my husband and he told me to get away from him, haha." I wish I knew her name; I would send a special "thank you" note to her!!

Wonderful experience all-around

I would like to commend the organizers, volunteers and spectators for making this race an incredible experience overall! The expo was nicely laid out and fun to browse. I had hoped to see Meb's presentation, but did not see any directions to it. We still had a good time anyway. I thought the gift bag was a little thin for a race of this scale. We received a gray gym bag and a neon blue tech shirt (not my favorite color, so I bought a white one at Dick's Sporting Goods). A $10 gift card from Dick's (we got $20 last year) and some sneaker balls. The spaghetti dinner was a near disaster for us, unfortunately. While in line around 6 p.m., we were told it would be a long wait to be seated. Our guess is that they were simply overwhelmed by last-minute ticket buyers. We were given a prompt refund. Other restaurants in town were just as packed, and we finally went to a relative's house in town. Organizers may need to consider a larger venue next year to handle the crowds. The course itself was challenging, but that is one reason I chose Pittsburgh. There are a lot of inclines of varying grades and lengths, especially from Mile 12 on. Nothing horrible that will stop you in your tracks, but you do have to be prepared. The neighborhoods were great, and there were spectators and music the entire way. Thank you, thank you, thank you! There were plenty of water stops, with a lot of friendly volunteers. I passed on Vaseline, oranges, etc., but they were available for those who did want them. I would definitely run the Pittsburgh Marathon again. Next time, I will own the hills!

Has great potential...

First off, the course was great - it showcases the city and the climbs really aren't that bad, especially considering the location. There was a lot of crowd support despite the horrible weather and lots of on-course support too. The expo was great and we got a lot of nice stuff for the entry fee. However, they really need some help in organization of the start/finish areas. The start was a zoo, and I was weaving through walkers for the first 5 miles. If you are going to walk, stay to the side, or better yet, use the walker start (one hour earlier). And don't walk 5-people across! So, next year, use corrals and a wave start. Also, the finish area: where was the food? I think it was farther down the road, but, I saw the chance to turn left and escape the crowd, so I did that. The only other complaint is about the road closures. Not all of this is the race's fault or anything they can control - Pittsburgh, especially downtown, is really a mess with tons of construction closures (even on ramps to the highways) and detours. It was very difficult for people to try to follow me on the course because of this, and the fact that when they would block off a street (for the race) they would block it off several blocks away, and then again right before the actual course. SO, if you are from out of town, trying to follow runners is almost impossible. Overall, a great course, and great support from the city and its residents, but I think this year it was a case of growing too fast, too soon. A wave start and better directions for spectators from out of town would do tons to improve the experience!

Pittsburgh now a big marathon

Pittsburgh has now stepped into the second tier in terms of size. Granted, it's not New York- or Chicago-big, but it's much larger than most. Over 16,000 people run all of the different races put together, with 4,011 for 26.2. That's a problem of sorts when you have half, relay, and full all in a three-block area to start the race. I understand the photo-op, but the start was too congested. The course is hilly, and you do cross four bridges. The weather was tough - very humid, and rain for most of the day. The medical staff was awesome! They were all over the place. The water stops were so numerous that there were too many! The finishing chute was far too congested as well. The planners should consider re-routing to Point State Park. The food after the race was in good supply. The sponsors were well represented and should be proud. The finishing medals are nice and very solid. The expo was very informative and large. The spectators were sparse on such a poor weather day, but the ones who showed up were great. Oranges in Shadyside, water in Homewood from two cute little kids, candy, etc... the people of Pittsburgh were very nice. Overall, well done Pittsburgh!

Great Fans, Scenic Course

The fans at this marathon could not have been better. There were so many bands, DJs, cheering squads, marching bands, and even volunteers handing out water who weren't associated with the marathon. It was pouring rain, but there were still so many people out all offering support. I was pretty impressed with the course as well. It was a very good tour of a lot of Pittsburgh, and it managed to avoid a lot of the steep grades that are all over Pittsburgh. That being said... it is still a very hilly marathon, and you must come prepared. The only part of the course I would complain about were the relay exchanges... they took up a lot of space and were very chaotic, which was distracting. Although the organizers made a huge effort, I believe there are many things that could be improved. First, 16,000 runners were way too many... the crowd was really tight until the half marathon split off. Second, I think the relay should be eliminated... it really detracted from my experience between the exchanges, and people around me constantly not running at a similar pace. Third, there were nowhere nearly enough porta potties at the start. Fourth, a lot of things - like packer pickup and gear check - were not clearly marked, and none of the volunteers we asked had any idea where these things were either.

Great organization and great fans!

There is a reason why Pittsburgh is known as the City of Champion: it is their spirit. It is obvious that the race organizers take pride in their work, as this was a first-class event. They mobilize a team of volunteers that is second to none. Race day was a great experience due to the fans, bands, and cheerleaders; and it was raining! There were water stops, music and fans for 26.2 miles. The expo was big-city. A sincere thank you to the volunteers and sponsors.

Great race, but some problems.

I ran the five-person relay in 2010. The course was great, but the timing system somehow malfunctioned, as it didn't register our last runner finishing. Due to that, none of us can view our times. Also, there were shuttle buses from the relay points back to the starting line, but there was an hour or more of a wait at every point. It took less time for me to walk the 3 miles back to the start than it would have taken to wait and ride. Overall, the fans were amazing though - there were plenty of people even though there was a steady rain for the entire race.

First-Time Marathoner

Having been from western PA, I knew it could be a challenging first marathon, but I was very impressed with the route and it was challenging - mostly Forbes Ave., the rest being pretty flat. Miles 22-24 were downhill- a blessing!!! It was awesome to see the different parts of Pittsburgh close up and crowd support was incredible, especially since it rained from miles 2-23!! The water/Gatorade stands were plentiful and overall it was a great first marathon! Also, I must add that the free technical T's and medals were awesome, considering many participants from the previous year said they were rough-looking! I would recommend this race!

Great marathon on a very tough course

The course is visually beautiful, over rivers and bridges, through a skyscraper-filled downtown, old and new neighborhoods with interesting architecture, and small enclaves that came out to cheer even under a steady rain. The organization was superb and the start area was the most composed and stress-free I've seen, with no one crushing toward the front even with voluntary corrals and a field that stretched hundred of yards. There were also plenty of easily accessible potties near the start right up to the gun. The course is as tough as the Flying Pig's, with over 1,000 feet of uphill running. Only about 1% of the field (55 of 5,000) was under three hours; 2% is typical for a tough but fair course, with fast courses having about 3 to 4% under three hours.

Amazing experience and well organized

I was extremely pleased with the overall organization and crowd support. The volunteers did an amazing job given the fact that it was raining almost all the time during the race. As much I hate running in rain, I was surprised to see that I really enjoyed the rain and it also helped with keeping my heart rate in check. I shaved 22 minutes off of my PR, and what else could I ask for? The Gatorade and water stops were plentiful and probably the best of all five marathons I've run. The course, though hilly, was very well organized. Every mile was clearly marked and it was good to see the mile markers spray-painted on the road. They organizers did a pretty good job with the finish festival, even with the rain. Good job and thank you for putting together a wonderful race experience!!!

Fantastic race!

This was a wonderful race despite the rain. The course was relatively flat, crowd support was terrific, and there were more water stops than I can count. Post-race was a bit challenging and could be improved if things were spread out. Overall, a great race. I recommend it and will do it again!

Love the Pittsburgh Marathon; NEEDS Improvements!

Overall, I enjoy the actual event - running 26.2 miles. I do appreciate the volunteers and the sponsors for their efforts and energy. I feel that we could always have room for improvements, being that I did do the marathon last year. I thought things were much better last year - especially at the finish line. Food was terrible! This year! Warm banana, rolls! Plain bagels! Certainly not enough room to move - very congested! I feel that all runners deserve special treatment - NOT PAYING $100 for special treatment like having ice. This was much NEEDED at the finish. There was none to be found. They wasted a place for VIP tents, when this place could of been more open for all runners and their fans. First aid areas need more space. The bathroom situation has not improved! With 8,000 extra runners, we need more (and that's not even including volunteers, fans, media, etc. The starting line has moved up, but it should have been moved up farther. :) Overall, this is just my opinion and I understand that several things come into play when planning a huge event. Thank you for your efforts!

Absolutely great marathon!

This was my first marathon, and despite less than ideal weather, I loved it. The course is wonderful - fantastic views of the city (very nice, gradual downhill from mile 23 on) - and best of all were the PEOPLE of Pittsburgh, cheering and volunteering. It just seemed like everyone had a heart of gold. The expo was great, especially with Meb Keflezighi attending! The finisher's medal this year is really nice bling with a ribbon design of Pittsburgh bridges - very, very nice. I will definitely be back! Just moved here a year ago and love the place more than ever. THANK YOU, PITTSBURGH

Great Marathon

My 10th marathon. I didn't train well for this one... my longest run was only 16 miles. Weather was terrible, but I still had tons of spectators and the volunteers were amazing. Organization was great for me; however, after there was a bomb scare and they changed the course, a lot of the runners were very confused on where to go and they re-routed them through the finish line area. I'm sure there will be tons of negative feedback about that but runners need to understand that the race did a good job taking the situation under control. The medal was great, aid stations were great, the shirt was pretty good, and the expo was great with some great running celebrities. Post-race food was decent. Runners typically don't want to eat stuff they were just offered on the couse... such as bananas, water and Gatorade. A great race, and I'm looking to do it again. Somewhat of a hilly course, but maybe that's just because of my lack of training. Thanks, Pittsburgh!!! Seven states down - 10 marathons total - and 43 states to go.

Pittsburgh

It was incredible the number of spectators that turned out in the constant rain. Also, there were volunteers everywhere along the course, standing in the rain. The course is completely closed to automobiles. There were two GU stations and an impressive number of Gatorade/water stations. There is nothing to dislike here. It is easy to see why this marathon filled up early in the year. Getting to the parking lot on Smallman Road at the end was a struggle. I went up to Penn then to Liberty and was turned away from walking down both streets. Normally both streets would have been open.

Great marathon for a first-timer

Despite being in Pittsburgh, which is surrounded by the Alleghenies, the course was fairly flat; and the last 2 miles were actually downhill, which gave everybody an extra push at the end. Kudos to cheering crowds and volunteers - they were just awesome. Everyone had something for runners - be it water, energy bars, orange slices, gummy bears and even beer (at mile 24). Volunteers were also handing out Vaseline on popsicle sticks to prevent chafing, but I almost mistook it for honey! Lucky for me, I asked what it was in advance. :) I completed my run in 4:01, and it's still my personal record. I was so inspired that I ran two more marathons later that year. It is a wonderful first marathon in a wonderful quirky city; I highly recommend it to runners of all levels!

Well done but could use some improvements

I had been looking forward to this for years and am from the Pittsburgh area. So it meant more to me to do the run in the Steel City. There are many others I want to do before I think I'd do this one again. Pretty well organized overall, but I think the start could be improved with a wave start rather than corralling everyone into the neck of a wishbone. Two streets around the convention center formed into one on Smallman Street, and there were recommended places of where to be standing for the start, but there was only one gun start and the first several miles were crowded. About two-thirds of the course was worth seeing and well attended by fans even amidst sub-par weather, but the other third was not in the prettiest parts of the city and I started wondering if I was on the right path. I'm also accustomed to hills, but don't let the other comments about the hills being okay fool you. It's not an easy course by any means. Probably the most annoying part was the relay exchange zones. They didn't have chutes, so they'd take up the whole street and be in the way of the rest of us just trying to pass through. This was more of a problem during the first half as I think the majority were half marathon teams. The bands that came out were great, the expo was pretty extensive and kept me busy for a couple hours, and the finish was great. I don't want to talk anyone out of this; I'd still recommend it, but be prepared!

One of the best races I've done!!!

This race was great. The course was well designed. There were few hills, which is amazing considering the brutal hills in Pittsburgh. It was organized very well. Plenty of water stations, oranges, and Vaseline. Even people throughout the neighborhoods donated water and supplies. The crowd support was my favorite part. Around mile 20, I got a bottle of water from a little girl and her mother who were handing them out (not affiliated with the race). Local high school bands came out too. The start and finish line may have been a little chaotic, but it's a race in the city. There isn't much extra space in which to put that many people. There could have been more volunteers at the finish line, though, and I could have used some more direction to the bag check since it had been moved from the beginning of the race. As for parking, it's always a mess in Pittsburgh. I can see how it may have been frustrating, especially for those from out of town. Overall, the race was great. I loved it and can't wait to do it again.

A great run in a great city

This is a very fun run. The 2009 return of the marathon to Pittsburgh was not without organizational glitches, but it was well done and the crowd response was very motivating. The variety of neighborhoods made the race very special (the beer at mile 24 was outstanding!), although parts of the course were a bit empty (such as the last part of mile 24 and the first half of mile 25). Overall, this was a great experience and the city did well.

Well-organized, awesome race!

Living in Western PA, I've been waiting for the "return" of Pittsburgh for several years. After a wonderful experience this year, it was well worth the wait! Organization: great! As recommended by the organizers, I got there early to park and had no problems. I parked in the garage for $5 at the convention center about 1 block from the start. The start itself was well-organized, with suggested pace signs posted. I lined up with the 3:10 crowd and had no issues at the start. Course: Fantastic! It was a great tour of the city - we hit all of the neighborhoods. To get 26.2 miles in Pittsburgh that's relatively flat was amazing. Of course, there is the one significant hill after the half, but it's really not a big deal. I kept a steady pace, climbed right up, and resumed my regular pace for the rest of the race. The steep downhill around 22-24 was really nice. By the time I hit the 25 mile-mark, I felt great. It was easy to push the last mile (my fastest) with the cheering crowds. It would be cool to run closer to the stadiums and the river, but overall, a well-designed course. Overall, a great mid-size race that I'd highly recommend!

Pittsburgh! You won't be disappointed!

I was impressed by the city, the race, and the people of Pittsburgh. Great low-cost dining. The baseball stadium is a great place to spend the night before. It is an outstanding value for major league sports. The expo was special, with Bill Rodgers taking the time to make everyone enjoy their experience in Pittsburgh. Thank you, Bill. The course was not the toughest; with all of the great hills there, it could have been a lot tougher. Well-run and thought-out. A very enjoyable event. Thanks!

Good marathon but could use improvement

The marathon course was challenging, but not overwhelming. The hills were not as bad as they could be. Some of the areas were not the most attractive. The weather was cloudy and cool with some rain - very good, in my opinion. The rain prevented some spectators from coming out, but those that did were great. The expo was a little sparse but there were plenty of helpful volunteers. The desire to be eco-friendly was admirable and mostly well-executed. As many have noted, the Styrofoam cups were tough to drink out of. I was glad to see that they were recycling the space blankets and almost everything else.

Good tour of an underappreciated city.

Hearing where I was headed, friends and family all had the same reaction: "Pittsburgh? You're going voluntarily?" Yes, I was, and it was a good race! The expo was reasonable, not enormous. I was glad to see plenty of running shoes available. And having Bill Rodgers there was impressive. We also took the opportunity to ride the incline and visit the Heinz Museum, both of which I recommend to visitors. Race day: parking was awful. We wound up on the other side of the Sixteenth Street Bridge and had to hike a mile to the start. The start area was a bit odd for those of us lined up in the back, with two right-angle turns before we even crossed the starting line. (And the porta-potties, with signs saying, "Capacity: 10 persons" were good for a laugh!) The course itself was well laid out. I would have liked more bridges because I love "bridgey" runs; however, the course designer did a good job of avoiding the steeper hills that Pittsburgh has in abundance. I felt that we had a good tour of various Pittsburgh neighborhoods, both upscale and emerging. The split between the full/half was easy to navigate, although it was difficult to figure out which way to go at the second relay station. By the way, volunteers directing traffic should not be on cell phones rather than assisting confused runners. Especially appreciated were the church members who came out in force to staff aid stations and support the runners. I saw one church with a sign saying that services would be Saturday night so they could cheer for the marathon Sunday morning - what a wonderful idea! Aid stations were plentiful and well stocked, and having different flavors of PowerAde was a nice touch. Not all of us like lemon-lime. I'd have loved more oranges along the course, too. The finish line was a little crowded and difficult to anticipate, due to turns just before the finish. I'm sure that the finish-line staff appreciated being undercover, but I had a hard time finding my friends after the race (had to scale a guardrail and hike back) and noted that there were a great many non-runners in the finish area and there were no bagels left. I don't think that was coincidence. The shirt wasn't bad, the medal reasonable, and the socks in the goody bag were nice. The hike back to parking was not so good. And it would be great if the race could work out an agreement with a local gym to allow runners to shower post-race. All in all, a good race, and one I would wholeheartedly recommend to other runners.

Great job, Pittsburgh!

As a native Western Pennsylvanian, I was very excited to have an opportunity to finally run the Pittsburgh Marathon. It did not disappoint. Course: The course is challenging. There is a moderate climb leading to an extended plateau around mile 12. The good news is that you come down off of the plateau around miles 23-24 and finish on level ground. So if you are still feeling good around mile 21, you should be able to make your goal. Organization: I have no major complaints about the race organization. There were more than enough water stations along the way, and the volunteers were great. I was feeling a bit light-headed when I finished and several volunteers were very helpful. One minor gripe that, in general, seems to be repeated many times in marathon reviews was the medal handout at the finish. This seems like such a simple concept: place a medal around the runner's neck when they finish. Instead, runners had to seek out the medal holding volunteers towards the back of the post-race area. At least they weren't still in plastic bags! Spectators: The crowd support was great! The fans really embraced this race and there was a lot of enthusiastic support even in the areas where the crowds were smaller. Conclusion: If you haven't run this one, add it to your list. You won't regret it. Let's just hope the race is back for 2010! Thanks to all of those who made it happen in 2009.

Nice race overall; details need work

Positives: Relatively level course: A true achievement given Pittsburgh's topography. I know some people complained about the "hills," but seriously, if you're tough enough to take on a 26.2-mile run, surely 200 feet of elevation shouldn't be an issue. Unless you're from south Florida, or the Arizona desert, I don't see the hills in this race being an issue for anyone trying to run a PR or BQ. Crowd support: Great support on the course. People who were out were very enthusiastic. Lots of kids! Nice shirt: I like the Nike tech shirt. Friendly and helpful volunteers - Everyone I talked to had a smile on their face and were extremely willing to help. Areas for improvement: No-show shuttle buses: I ran the final leg of the relay. The shuttle bus to the relay exchange point was 1 hour late (the Relay Handbook stated the shuttles would run every half hour starting at the beginning of the race). NO EXCUSE FOR THIS. By the time the bus did show up, some of us who would be at the front of the pack were nervous that we would miss our teammates. Then, the police wouldn't let the shuttle buses through roadblocks. At that point we should have had a police escort. Anyway, once we were off the designated route, the bus driver didn't know how to get exchange zone. Fortunately, locals on the bus knew an alternative, yet longer route. As it was, the shuttle got us to the relay exchange zone with about 10 minutes to spare. I'm sure there's an explanation for this, but this was a pretty major screw up. Congestion at the finish: There simply wasn't enough room for all of the finishers to disperse. Add to that all of the family members and friends mingling around, and the finish area was mobbed. The convention center overhang gave the finish area a very claustrophobic feel. Finish line eats: People finishing a marathon deserve more than a banana, cookie and water. Medals: Sponsor "billboards" on the medals are tacky, and cheapen the accomplishment of those who completed the marathon. Save the advertising for other areas of the race. I'm not saying sponsors shouldn't be recognized, but do you see a McDonald's emblem on an Olympic medal?

Hope to see the marathon return in 2010.

I want to thank all of the volunteers. Your time, energy and efforts are greatly appreciated. I am glad Pittsburgh hosts a marathon, I just wish it was not the same weekend as the Flying Pig. I have mixed emotions about this race. I have run a number of marathons, so if I had the authority to change a few things, this would be my list: First, the medal should be handed out immediately when one crosses the finish line. I felt like I had to go find the medal. Also, the medal design was okay. If this was the 20th anniversary, why didn't they indicate that on the medal? Second, when I went to pick up my bib and chip, I discovered that the poster would be available after the race. They should have just included the poster in the bag with the t-shirt. Finally, the City of Pittsburgh needs to embrace the marathon and recognize the overall economic potential it can have for the city.

Wonderful race, great city, crappy finish area

Everything was good on the course and at the start. The finish area needs work. There should've been more refreshments outside the runners' area, and the location of the bag-drop trucks should have been more clearly communicated before and after the race. Volunteers were awesome and the route was fantastic.

Great race! Well organized!

I smiled from start to finish in this race. The start was on time and not overly crowded. The hills on the course, with the exception of the one at mile 12, were gentle, with gentle downhills - just enough so that the legs weren't exhausted from either going up or going down. The race committee went out of its way to make this a great event.

Glad to see the city of Pittsburgh has a marathon again. I look forward to the race in 2010. Welcome Back!

I traveled from Phoenix to run this race in the 'Burgh because I heard so many great things about how amazing the marathon used to be - the tremendous organization, the terrific spectators and how "flat" it was. It lived up to every expectation and then some. I also discovered what the Natives consider flat! I would say that it was a very hilly course, but they were rolling hills with every uphill followed by an equally generous downhill. There was a major climb around Mile 11 that wasn't balanced out until the gravity free-for-all around Mile 24. All in all, a GREAT race. The perfect size, an awesome layout that takes you through a variety of interesting towns and plenty of bridges, and supportive fans throughout the course. There were no parking issues, you were able to run right from the get go, and it was a pleasure to finish a block from the start. It made for very easy logistics. Well done, Pittsburgh! And by the way, the "Styrofoam" cups were actually biodegradable and kept with the Green theme.

Welcome Back, Pittsburgh Marathon!

The Pittsburgh Marathon was a great experience for me. The volunteer staff was both superb and plentiful. The race organizers did a great job after a 5-year absence. The only exception in my mind was the lack of a staggered start time for the marathon, half-marathon and relay marathon events. Due to a small staging area and congested start to the race, the full-marathoners should have been able to start alone and unimpeded. Instead the runners had to combat the relay teams and half-marathon runners to find their groove. For those of us trying to run a Boston time, this was challenging. We also had to contend with passing the walkers around mile 4 as they started one hour in advance - this only added to the congestion early in the race. Other than that, it was a fantastic event and experience.

The Pittsburgh Marathon course was wonderful. The spectators were encouraging and provided a lot of motivation all throughout the course. I felt the excitement throughout the entire 26.2 miles. Very well organized in a great city.

This was my first marathon and I was a bit nervous that a 6 year hiatus would make for a few bumps in the marathon organization. However, this was not the case at all. This marathon was super organized, and while I was running, I couldn't think of anything I needed that wasn't provided. Water/Gatorade were plentiful, as were Vaseline, GU, and fruit. The course was beautiful. I'd never been to Pittsburgh and it showed off the city beautifully. The spectators were not always plentiful, but those that were there, were enthusiastic. Great job, Pittsburgh. (My only suggestion for next year is to switch to paper cups from Styrophone cups, as styrophone cups are very difficult to drink with while running.)

WOW! Pittsburgh did a FANTASTIC job this year. Very beautiful and challenging course (especially the back half), plenty of fluid and aid stations, and loads of tremendously helpful volunteers. Wonderful First Marathon

This race was everything I hoped my first marathon would be. Great course, great weather, great city. The crowds were awesome and really excited and motivating, and there were numerous bands to help me through. Water stops every mile with tons of volunteers handing out fluids. The hills were really not bad at all - they helped break up the race and gave you something to look forward to (even going up was fun). If you are worried about the hills, don't be. I am a first-time marathoner and I was just fine. The city did a great job and really came through to make this a great marathon. No negatives - a perfect race!

Great event/much better than expected

Great race. Pros: 1) Great course to PR on, with loads of downhill; there are only a couple of uphills, and they really weren't that bad. 2) The expo was better than I expected it to be. I actually bought more here than at Boston. 3) Parking was easy, and fairly cheap. 4) Good refreshments at the end. 5) Crowd support wasn't too bad. 6) Nice shoe bag. 7) Race ends only blocks away from Primanti Brother's - a great place to go after running 26 miles. Cons: 1) They made the shirt kind of ugly, with the Dick's logo right in the front chest, and the sizing is atrociously big. 2) More porta-potties are needed on the course.

What a great race - I enjoyed every minute of it and it's all because of the wonderful volunteers and spectators. First-rate. I also loved the course, which was a great tour of the city for this newcomer. My only suggestion for the race organizers is to switch to paper cups next year. The Styrofoam, in addition to being environmentally unfriendly, tends to crack when runners do the "squeeze."

A good race that will get better and better.

This is my hometown race, so I'm very glad to see it back, and I applaud all of the hard work that brought it back. It's a fun race in a great city, and it's worth running just because it is in Pittsburgh. Course: The course is overall good, but three legs through the Strip district and the two miles above West End Bridge felt like we were doing laps with little crowd support. Being from the area and knowing all of the hills, I know there aren't many options for moving the route, but changes could be done. A finish in Point State Park would bring back some of the downtown. Also, maybe run by Heinz Field and PNC Park more so that out-of-towners would see those landmarks. Finish area: Too crowded at the end and too confusing. Neat idea to have finish under the convention overhang, but just not enough space considering the size of the race. Need to move back to Point State Park. They needed a map of finish area in the pre-race materials, since they closed off so many walkways. The sign for the family meeting area was at ground level and not easy to find. (Note: Organizers have already said they need to rethink the finish line area.) Finisher's medals were pretty average - a Dick's promotion more than a finish medal. Spectators: I've run a bunch of Pittsburgh Marathons, and crowd support was small this year; but I'm sure that was just due to the wet weather, since they have gotten big crowds in the past. "Music by the mile" was more like "music by the 5K" - again, probably due to the weather. Electric amps and rain don't mix. Aid stations/water stations/medical crew are world-class. If you're from out of town and considering this race, it's definitely worth doing. I'm sure every year it will get better and better as well.

My favorite marathon

I'm thrilled that the Pittsburgh Marathon is back! Beginners will truly appreciate the flat course and the fan support along the entire route. Veterans will enjoy the flawless organization. Everyone will love the easy parking (over 20,000 spots for 10,000 runners), plenty of bathrooms, lots of free stuff (loved the socks and T-shirts) in the goody bags and after the run, and more than adequate support along the course (water/aid stations about every mile). The only drawback that I noticed was that it was slow going when leaving the race area because of the several main street closures. However, this minor annoyance would not be an issue for out-of-towners staying in the downtown Pittsburgh area. I highly recommend the race to beginners and long time marathons alike. If you are visiting, be sure to explore all of the unique Pittsburgh neighborhoods (e.g. South Side, Little Italy, Mount Washington) and don't leave without trying a Primanti's sandwich!

welcome back

There's no place like home. There's no place like home. This was my 20th, and one of my favorites ever. I am biased. Great job by the race director and committee. A few tweaks, and it will be perfect. Add a couple of more vendors at the expo, a more obvious separation when the half splits (though it was obvious to me), and keep the same volunteers but give them better instructions at the water stops. Oh. And that hill in the middle.... I will be back.

Thank you so much to all of those who worked so hard to bring the marathon back to Pittsburgh. The new start and finish was ideal. I've run the race starting at the zoo, on Grant Street; and starting at the strip was ideal, given the parking and space. The volunteers were spectacular. Thank you to all who made it possible.

Very enjoyable (painful, normal 26.2)

My 4th. Usually I ask why. This time, I asked why not next year. Crowd support was very good. Weather, including rain, was perfect. Climb into Oakland was reasonable. Parking was easy. Pork barbecue at Mile 15 was tempting. Scenery was great. Folks, do this marathon.

Outstanding, fun marathon - great job, Pittsburgh!

Wow! I loved this marathon. The organization was superb. I have run 12 marathons to date and have never seen so many friendly, supportive fans in a marathon of this size. The water stations were well stocked, and the volunteers were numerous. The course was entertaining, taking you through numerous neighborhoods, all with a unique character. You could see the civic pride in the people of Pittsburgh who turned out to support the runners. I was amazed at the quality of support runners received from fans along the route. I cannot give the race organizers and the City of Pittsburgh enough superlatives. I loved everything about this marathon - it was the perfect medium-sized marathon. Gels and food were available along the course route. It is hard to believe that this was the first year back for PGH after a hiatus. The organization was just perfect.

Did the Relay

I'm noting all of the great reviews and wonder where all the bands and festivities were! I ran leg 2 of the relay - across the West End Bridge, through the Southside, and up into Oakland. The crowd support was OK, much like Columbus, but maybe I was too focused as I only noticed one high school band ensemble at the end of the bridge. Oakland had a nice crowd despite the rain at that time. Hopefully the rest of the course was more exciting for the full marathon runners than for leg 2. Overall, the organization was good and the expo was nice, though this is Pittsburgh, so parking and finding your way around are both challenging. Thanks to the volunteers - you did a wonderful job. My only negative comment on the organization itself was the finish line setup. That had to be the worst finish area I have ever seen, though Philadelphia is close. There's no "open area" to move around. Every sidewalk or street I took to get to the finish area was either blocked off or had a security guard turning people away. I saw many folks looking for a path to get to the finish area after watching for their runners along Penn Ave. They definitely need to remedy that in future marathons. Why not end in a park area, or some other wide open space?

Decent crowds; easy course?

The crowds were great in some areas, but lacking in others. Some news articles commented that the crowds for 2009 were not as big as in years past (maybe due to bad weather?). The course was mostly flat, which is good for speed but not so challenging. Having said that, I'd run it again. It's a well organized race that gives runners a nice technical shirt.

Absolutely terrific!

This was a really great marathon in every respect. The organization was great: Tons of information on the website, and an excellent race expo. Great goody bag full of stuff, and a nice technical tee. On race-day the weather was perfect, the start was very smooth and there was minimal congestion considering the number of runners. The course was set with an abundance of porta-toilets (the snazzy ones that flush!), plenty of water and PowerAde, and enough gels, oranges, etc. Also, there were several stops with Vaseline. And the crowd support was awesome! In every area we ran through, people - young, old and in between - were out on the streets to cheer us on with a great deal of pep and humor. At one point a man walking along the course was calling out to let the runners know there was an aid station ahead, and when I looked over, the man was Bill Rogers! Kind of a thrill! I loved the variety of entertainment, especially the school band and the cheerleaders toward the end. The finish area was well stocked with food and liquids to replenish ourselves (I loved the smiley cookies). The only thing I didn't like was the fact that the cups at the water stations were Styrofoam. Paper would have been more ecologically friendly. Now, about the level of difficulty of the course. It was HARD. I train on hills and have done San Francisco and the Poconos, and Pittsburgh was harder than either of those. It was hilly! Be prepared and pace yourself accordingly. All in all, this was a great event. Thank you, organizers, and thank you, Pittsburgh!!

Hats off to all involved with this race

Organized as well as any marathon I've been involved in. Very well done; that's all there is to say. This race takes a 26-mile loop around the city and surrounding areas. A little bit of everything, from bridges to mansions to college campuses and neighborhoods of every variety. I thought the course was excellent and the hills were very doable. I wouldn't consider this a hilly course by any stretch. A couple of negatives, though: Maybe use different-colored cups for PowerAde and water just to help tell the difference. I'm from out of state and stayed the night of the race at the Westin. I was really disappointed that many of the bars and restaurants in the downtown area were closed on Sundays. It was kind of a ghost town, which I didn't expect from this city. But all in all, I really enjoyed Pittsburgh and thought that the race was top-notch.

The whole event was awesome.

The Pittsburgh Marathon was canceled the year I moved to Pittsburgh, so I was eager to run it on its return. The organizers, city, spectators, and volunteers really put on a great show. And the weather even cooperated. Even though I train in and around Pittsburgh, I thought the course was tough - but a good tough. The journey through the different neighborhoods was very stimulating and kept one's interest. And all credit to the spectators. It was cold for them standing around, but they stuck it out and cheered us on. As we ran up through Oakland, I had visions of loads of students cheering us on (as in another famous marathon that took place two weeks ago). But then I remembered that graduation was last week; still, it has great potential. The organizers did a great job of keeping the finish area free of congestion while allowing us to pick our own food and drink. I would definitely recommend this to anyone, newbies and veterans alike.

My favorite marathon to date!

Pittsburgh was my fourth marathon and by far my favorite. The organization was great, the media coverage was over the top. The volunteers were excellent and the crowds were incredible! I was super impressed with the number of people out cheering the runners on. Not only were there lots of people, but they were very enthusiastic. Pittsburgh will always stand out in my memory, especially since I got my first BQ on this course. Thanks to the city of Pittsburgh, the people of Pittsburgh, and Dick's Sporting Goods for sponsoring this great event. I hope this race is back to stay. Other thoughts: The last 2-3 miles are either downhill or on the level. This is a big help for tired runners.

OUTSTANDING return!!

Pittsburgh is a great city to visit for the marathon; bring your family, for the old, dirty, steel town of the 70's is no more. The expo was well set up, providing you a nice backpack with the race logo; and the medal and t-shirt are well done. The course was well designed, and you cross three rivers and bridges. Running through the neighborhoods was excellent; most residents were out to cheer you on. There's one short, steep hill, and some mini rollers in the second half. Mile 24 was downhill, and it hurt the quads. It's not a super PR course, but it is fast. The people of Pittsburgh are very friendly, from guiding me on the bus from the airport to my hotel, to the awesome hotel staff at the Holiday Inn, who gave me directions and tips about what to see in the city. The volunteers on the course really showed some spirit and embraced the runners If you were in the 3:30 pace group, you all rock and were strong!! Great job; this one is worth the flight from the west coast.

Couldn't hope for a better first marathon!

I live in Pittsburgh, and this was my first marathon. What a great experience! The weather was perfect, the course was great (no bad hills whatsoever, and a wonderful downhill at the end). Though the crowds were sparse in some parts, there was always SOMEBODY cheering and smiling, and the crowds overall were amazing. Even the water and aid station people were cheering as they handed out supplies - many of them yelled my name out (and we got high fives from police and firefighters and kids along the way)! People handed out orange slices and gummy bears. There were great bands and dancers. This marathon really showcases the City of Pittsburgh, the wonderful neighborhoods, and the great people we have here! Overall, very well organized! Can't wait to do it again!

An excellent race... I'm so glad it is back.

I've run this course six other times. The course is challenging with lots of great crowd support. I also enjoy the City of Pittsburgh... it makes for a fun weekend getaway. Kudos to the organizers, as they did a nice job bringing this race back to life. Can't wait until next year.

Good race, bad expo

The race was nice, and the fans were great. The only problem I had with the race was after I finished. I had just run my 26.2, and instead of being able to walk back to see my family, I had to walk through the expo. I don't know if Dick's realized it, but they made me come to their expo the day before to pick up the packet. Don't make me walk all of the way though it again after just running the race. After the race was over, all I wanted to do was get to my family. It was not easy to do. Again, I enjoyed the race and the course.

can't wait for next year

I am so happy and proud that this race got back on track. It was a fabulous turn-out by the runners and the organizers deserve tremendous credit for raising the dead (marathon). Hopefully in the future the race will return to either a Point Park or Heinz Field finish, as this could eliminate some of the run through the Strip (the first part) or Manchester (unappealing). I also look forward to even greater crowds as tradition builds and race weather improves. Beyond that, a great job to everyone. To have no real problems in their first time out of the gate is a testament to the organizers. This marathon should only grow from here.

Needs work for next year; needs an after-party

Excellent spectator support! There was an unbelievable number of fans - at every mile. It was really awesome. My main issues were that the half-marathoners and those who ran the relay marathon (7 miles each) all got the same medal as I did for running the entire 26.2. That's seems kind of cheap to me. Additionally, they had the relay marathon runners end at the same spot as the marathoners. That stunk. An after-party would have been nice as well - something besides a PowerAde, banana, and smiley cookie. All in all, though, it was a good race that I will run again.

Solid Spring Marathon

I was very impressed with the return edition of this race. The organization, the marketing, the website, the grassroots organizing, and the response from the community were nearly flawless in what essentially was a first-time effort after a six-year absence. The course itself was very reasonable. The first 11 miles are run downtown near the rivers and were almost entirely flat (the first 11 miles are easier, but less scenic). There is one long gradual uphill around the 12-mile mark when you head into the university district, but it certainly is not anywhere nearly as difficult as the Newton Hills in Boston and it comes earlier in the race. The second half of the race has more of a rolling terrain and passes through some nice neighborhoods where the crowd support is very good. There is a nice gradual downhill about mile 23 that lasts almost a mile and provides you a nice boost before the final flat two-mile straightway to the finish. Note: They started the relay and the half-marathon at the same time and place as the full; however, it seemed like traffic flowed pretty well. The good: * The website was generally good, with lots of information. * The expo was good - not as big as Boston or the other big races, but well-organized and very nice. I got to meet Bill Rodgers. * The support on the course was very good in terms of water stations and porta-potties. * The RF ID tags on the shoes worked well - no chip collection after the race. * The fan support along the course was very good with lots of bands. * Athlete tracker with text message/email updates worked. * There were pace group leaders for lots of different time goals. A few minor suggestions for next year: * The bag drop: It needs to be mentioned on the website. It also needs more trucks, with fewer bags per truck and better organization of bags within the truck. There were some lines after the race. * Finish line organization: They had enough volunteers but they need to direct the runners better and tell the runners where stuff is - the medals, the foil, the food, the bag drops, etc. They should have the medals and the foil wraps prior to the food and water. * I would prefer to have timing mats at more regular intervals (e.g., 10K, half, 20K) rather than at the relay exchange zones. At the very least, a mat at the halfway point for the full marathon would be good. * I heard isolated complaints about some of the pacers being inconsistent in their approach - e.g., some went out too fast and banked time, causing some runners to burn out in the second half. Overall, for those people in the Midwest or in the East who are looking for a good, mid-sized spring marathon, this race is a nice option.

Most unorganized marathon I have ever run!

The course in Pittsburgh was okay but the "slight" downhill grade to the finish was anything but slight. The hill into Oakland did not bother me; the section around 22-24 miles was brutal. As far as organization, where do I start: giving the medals out at the end of the chute was a bad idea, the finish line area was poorly selected, there was a lack of professionalism and knowledge of the staff (especially at finish), and there was a shortage of goody bags (some racers got nice drawstring bags or over-the-shoulder bags while others got a plastic shopping bags). I will not return to Pittsburgh for this marathon. This being said, I would like to thank the people of Pittsburgh. The spectators were awesome!!

What a spectacular return!!

What a great marathon!! The organization was outstanding. Plenty of aid/fluid stations. The municipal support was amazing: police everywhere, sanitation workers spread throughout the course, plenty of ambulances. The crowds were a little bit sparse at times, but overall they were great: very enthusiastic, friendly and engaged. The volunteers manning the aid stations were incredible: supportive and LOTS of them!! Thank you!! The local high school bands sounded great too!! The finish line area flowed very nicely: LOTS of recovery food/fluid (I didn't get there until 4:10:12 (gun time 4:13:29) and it was still fully stocked). I love the start/finish being the same: very easy to get to your hotel, which there are plenty of. I stayed at the Westin, which is right at the start/finish, perfect! There were several hills, and one kind of tough one. This was my 10th marathon, and while it was my first Pittsburgh Marathon, it will definitely not be my last! I'm looking forward to running it in 2010!!

The Return of a Great Race

I ran the half-marathon, but have run Pittsburgh before. I want to thank the organizers for bringing the marathon back to Pittsburgh. I know that I am biased, but this was truly a great race. Good weather as well. Plenty of aid stations and crowd support. I'm looking forward to running the full marathon next year.

So much fun; can't wait until next year!

I had a blast yesterday! It was my first time in a marathon, and I walked the half. Everyone was fantastic to runners and walkers alike. It was so exciting to get to see Pittsburgh that way. I can't wait until next year to be able to do it again--maybe I'll be able to run some of it by then!

This was the best Pittsburgh Marathon yet.

The race director, staff, and city political types did more than get it right this time; they nailed it. From my perspective, they earned the highest marks I can bestow. Very well done. We awaited this one's return, and we were not disappointed. The course was in great condition. I had no issues with traffic; it was extremely well marked, with ample aid/fluid stations, staffed by enthusiastic volunteers. And Mother Nature smiled on us today, to boot. It had all of the right ingredients for a winning combination. Welcome back to the marathon big leagues, Pittsburgh. We missed you.

Love the 'burgh!

It was great getting back to my home town to run the 20th annual Pittsburgh Marathon. It's great running through the different parts of the city, which allows you truly to appreciate what it has to offer. It has a great course; it's pretty much flat (except for the hill climbing into Oakland, which isn't that bad unless your from Nebraska where we have no hills for training)! Great sponsorship, and a well organized race overall; BUT the fan support was lackluster at best. They need training too! I will definitely be back!

One of the Best (I'm Biased, But...)

Thought this day would never come - the return of the Pittsburgh Marathon. I first ran the race back in 1990. The original course start (at the Pittsburgh Zoo) will always reign supreme in the hearts of local runners, but the current modified course (starting and ending downtown) still is better than most marathons I've done. The belief that there are killer hills is way overblown. A very slight and quick climb into Oakland should be a piece of cake for anyone. One caveat: there's not much shade on the second half of the course, so be prepared. Wear sunblock and get cold fluids in you. Otherwise, once you run this race, you'll always come back.
