Decent race, big post party

The race started near the pavilion. Parking was easy, but there were not enough restroom facilities to accommodate all the runners. The early portion on the boardwalk is fun and there are a lot of spectators. The course is flat and fast, the rain this year made the last portion on the trail muddy but can't help the weather. I almost missed a turn later in the race, I did to see any volunteers or signs. After running the full, not much food was leftover. The tent party was awesome with a DJ and plenty of beverages which is a big draw for many. The race, hotel and dining sells out so sign up and book your choices early.

Good Race Generally Well Organized

The course is generally flat, so if you are looking for something fast this will fit the bill. Large sections are out and backs on park bike trails. That will help or hurt depending on your preferences. Pre race communication is, ahem, extensive. There were more emails from the race director for this marathon than any other race (marathon or otherwise) that I have ever run. The only glitch was at the start. The race has an 'informal drop off' for clothes you want for the finish line. At the start, there are no signs for where to find it nor does anyone associated with the race seem to know where they are. After asking quite a few people and getting increasingly frustrated and closer to the starting time we finally got an answer. They are along the road near the pavilion towards the beach. You might want to note that if you plan to run this race.

Enjoyed it.

I did not expect so many people at a small beach town in December! Starting line has a giant lit up Christmas tree. Friendly people all around. Some are dressed as elfs. Parts of the course is an out and back so I got to cheer on some of the fastest runners. Great scenery. Cold, windy, and wet, you know, 'Duck weather', but most of that was late in the race. Legs got muddy. Loved it. Only regret was that I had no appetite for all that food and drink at the finish line.

JUST DONT...

At least 2 dozen porta potties short at race start and supplied only 4 during the remainder of the entire race. They cram all the marathoners with the half marathoners into a starting area way too small to accommodate everyone instead of starting the full at 7 and the half at 8 (hint, hint race directors). No one at the aid stations had pitchers to fill up bottles and not enough GU stations (even though it was advertised on the website). Weather was horrible, obviously not their fault, but they did choose to route the course onto dirt trails which turned the race into a tough mudder and was downright DANGEROUS!!! Oh and smoking pot may be acceptable nowadays but you shouldnt allow it after the finish area at the party tents. I got an actual high instead of a runners high. Fellow 50 staters, pick a different DE marathon.

After Party - Race Director - Marathon

Very disappointing. The line to get into any of the two locations for the after party was very long. Very disorganized and no-one taking control. Once you are inside, there is another long line to get a drink and another long line to get some food. We purchased two additional tickets for our wives but we had to leave to go somewhere else serving real food and offering a place to seat. Cold burgers, hot dogs and canned beans don't do the trick after running a full marathon We tried to talk to the marathon director to share our feedback and frustration but it was a waste of time. The director was standing in front of the marathon prices the entire time so it was clear that she had no idea how bad it was, or had very low expectations on the experience for everyone. As far as the marathon, it was nothing special. I was hoping for something unique but it was way overrated specially when you paying over 160.00...I will not consider or recommend this marathon. There are way too many Marathons out there for almost half the fee.

Exdcellent -- small, scenic, and flat course

This is a great marathon. The course is flat with about 1/3 on roads, 1/3 on a trail through oceanside wetlands, and 1/3 along wooded paths. The crowd is great, but there are sections on the paths where there is not crowd. Bring your own gu/cliffshot/what ever, since they are available in limited areas on the route. Cool shirt and medal too.

Would do this race again.

Thought this was one of the best organized races I've ever been at. Plus the volunteers were as was the crowd support. I very much enjoyed myself. Thanks for a great race.

Great marathon on a great course

No marathon production is perfect. Each and every one, big or small, has something that could be improved upon, Rehoboth Beach is no exception. However, I would rank this marathon near the top of my favorites list. Kudos to Mary Beth and her crew for an outstanding job organizing this event. Also, I cannot forget and thank the army of volunteers who graced their presence coming out early on a chilly Saturday morning to make this event possible. Fifty-Staters should seriously consider making Rehoboth Beach their Delaware marathon destination.

You won't find a better race community!

This was my first marathon, and I'm worried I may have spoiled myself. The course is absolutely breathtaking, as it varies from the beachfront, to small-town Rehoboth streets, to beautiful flat trails through the woods and marshes... It was gorgeous. The temp was about 45 when I started and 55 when I ended. Beautiful weather for running. The biggest impact however is how committed the Rehoboth Beach Running Company is to this race! The online forums have hundreds of users that make hundreds of posts and comments each week. You really feel like you're part of a huge family. The town is decorated to the 9's for Christmas for the race, and there is loads of community support. After such a great experience, I'm already signing up for my next one and it hasn't even been a week.

5-Star

This course was perfect blending of packed trails and asphalt. The first 22 miles were flat with a mild downhill, keep in mind that mile 22-25 is a mild up hill grind.

Wonderful town, wonderful race!

Rehoboth is my 6th marathon and was absolutely one of my favorites. I love heading through the quiet wildlife and beach areas, and finishing in town with great crowd support. Like any road race there were some out and back slogs but nothing terrible. I prefer a quiet race, no DJs etc, and Rehoboth really had a nice balance. The after-party was crazy but amazing. Also, I was able to park a block from the finish, so no need for a gear bag. I would highly recommend this race.

Beautiful flat course

Absolutely perfect weather and the course is fantastic. Could be challenging with wind but otherwise very flat. Easy recovery due to lots of trails. Organization is five star. Easy packet pickup. Highly recommended.

Had a blast, great race

The RD and volunteers did a wonderful job with the race and its organization, and the after-parties. Packet pickup was very easy. Logistics to get to the start were easy, too (we stayed 2 blocks away). We had friends who drove from a hotel further away and didn't hear about any difficulties finding a parking space. Great course, but be prepared for the hardpack gravel. The hardpack gravel is there on the first out/back and again on the second. This is a very flat course with a barely mentionable hill in the first half. Course was well marked with marshals and traffic cops there when needed, and cones/arrows on the street when marshals weren't really needed. The after party is divided into two areas, one under the tent is billed as more raucous and the one at the Cultured Pearl is billed as quieter. Both were fairly crowded, and we opted for the quieter one. The food was easy to get and was real food - hamburgers, pulled pork, hot dogs, etc. The bar looked somewhat crowded so I waited a bit to get beer - by the time I went the kegs were kicked but they had bottles available. Only negative comment: would like to see some improvement in the way drop bags are handled. While we stayed 2 blocks from the start, the finish was 1/2 mile from our hotel, and we wanted to have the option to just go to the after party without going back to the hotel. Drop off was very easy with unattended bins next to the starting area, but for pick up all bags and clothes collected at the start were piled in the same area. While the clothes were on one side and the bags on the other, people going through the clothes tossed them willy nilly and covered some of the bags. The spectators were wonderful, but being a small secluded marathon were only in selected spots, which is why my rating of 4 rather than 5. This year the weather was perfect, but I assume being at the beach wind could be an issue. Still my weather app said there were 9 mph winds during my race, but I didn't feel it so maybe it was blocked well most of the time.

Bad value in a rare state

I'm doing the 50, and this is a good time to knock one off. Unfortunately, I didn't plan ahead, and signed up late. $160 for late registrants? Obscene. Only more expensive races are NYC and Boston. This is a race run on unpopulated roads and an off-season state park. Massive profit margin for a for-profit operation. Pros: - flat and fast - good post race party Cons: - poorly organized aid station - bad swag - half marathoners dominate the race and get in the way; including post race - crappy t-shirt - no real community interest

93rd Marathon! A great Maniac race!

I love running with Marathon Maniacs since they are so much fun. I met maniacs from all over the US and they were all very friendly. The post race party had tons of food and beer. The high winds slowed me down as did the temperature. I was happy I did Rehoboth and may do Dover in the future. The local businesses were very supportive and I picked up some cool gifts from nieces and nephew! I highly recommend this race. The views are great!

Great Destination Marathon

This was my 44th different marathon. I found the course to be scenic and varied enough to be interesting with the dirt path sections, the marsh bridge, the glimpses of the ocean, and the brief run through town around mile 18. The dirt trail portions were not technical. No roots, rocks or ruts to trip you up and it was packed pretty hard. The race organization was top notch. Packet pickup was great, water stops were all great, and the indoor post race party was awesome. They never ran out of beer or food. My only complaint would be that their website is really in need of improvement. Rehoboth Beach was a great place to visit! Even though it was off season a lot of shops and restaurants were open. Take a drive out to the Dogfish Brewery if you have the time.

Nice late fall marathon option

Linda and Mary Beth go above and beyond with this wonderful marathon. PROS: - Mostly flat course, a couple of bumps, but they're almost welcome when encountered. - early 7am start. - beautiful course with great nature views. - About half of the course is on crushed stone trails = easy for recovery. - vibrant after party. - easy package pickup. - Extremely responsive facebook page. - A run for all abilities, as the cutoff is 7 hours. - good shirt and finisher medal. CONS - after party food, although varied, I found to be dry and couldn't each much of it. Maybe simplify the menu and have better quality? - The two out and backs on trails can be a bit mentally draining. Plus, no bounce on trails, so you have to work a bit more to maintain speed. - Wind can be factor, but, for every headwind there will be a tail wind. - Personally, I didn't like the beer selection at the finish, but no biggie, this is more on me. A simple lager would work - they offered an IPA, a pumpkin lager and a dark beer. - Pricing is too high. You can register 10 months early for $100, but registering a couple of weeks out costs $170 with fees. They charge $20 to change races (really should be free unless upgrading to the full) and the Zip shirt I had to have was a bit pricey at $65. Overall, a great race and you can tell Linda and Mary Beth really care about the race. It could improve in certain areas but, so could any race.

Great After Party for Half Marathon

One of the most beautiful marathon courses! The early miles along the coast when the sun was rising were stunning. The race is flat, well organized and Rehoboth was nice to visit. I would recommend this marathon especially for the 50 states looking for DE. But do not expect a free beer if you finish after 4 hours. Both after parties were completely out of beer before the 4 hour finishers. There are plenty of other places in Rehoboth to get a beer but it was disappointing after all the hype not to be able to even buy a beer at the after party.

One of the most beautiful course I've ever run

A wonderful race, especially for 50-staters looking to cross Delaware off their lists. it's a fast, flat course with beautiful views in Cape Henelopen State Park. The fans during the first and last few miles were very enthusiastic, and I thought the race was well organized. Parking around Rehoboth Beach is easy, and it's a fun town to explore, even in the off season. I highly recommend this race and would definitely run it again.

Flat but narrow course, great after-party!

Mary Beth and team do a great job! The shirts were bright green Brooks tech t-shirts and the real key is the after party with free local beer and good food. The course is on trail for a significant portion (two sections). If it rains, be prepared for potential mud, but otherwise you're mostly running in parks and it's really pretty. The course is essentially two different out and backs. Half marathoners run with the marathoners in the first couple of miles and then share the roads and trails for the last ~8 miles as well. Very flat, but watch out for tiny rocks especially in the second half out and back. Make sure to check the Facebook page for this race to stay informed. FYI, there is also race day pick up for bibs. Not many people on the course for cheering, but this is not a race that you go to if you want crazy crowds. It's more of a scenic destination one. Thanks LSD (Lower, Slower Delaware)!

First Class Event with a Small Town Vibe

I am a Half Marathon Runner and have participated in many different races. The Rehoboth Marathon is top-notch in comparison to many of the big name events out there. For a small town race it is amazing how well this event is organized and how well the runners and spectators alike are treated. Packet pick-up is always a breeze (and convenient as well - allowing race day pick-ups which is mostly unheard of at other races). The course is absolutely beautiful and I love that it is so varied, running through the town of Rehoboth Beach, venturing into State Park land, and offering multi-surface running (road, gravel trail, boardwalk). It is never boring! There are lots of spectators throughout - more than I've seen in a number of larger races! The finisher's medals are awesome and the finish line party is amazing! Yes, there are lines to get into the tent but those lines are WELL WORTH the wait! Catered breakfast foods, as well as burgers, mac n' cheese and vegetarian options too. There is always plenty! If you are a beer drinker (and let's face it, most runners are!) you won't be disappointed. A local craft brewery backs their truck right into the tent and taps are pouring 3 or 4 different brews to suit everyone's taste! This year the taps kicked and the brewer left to bring in more kegs. In the meantime the race director made bottled beer available to everyone! I am at this race year after year and have never heard the words 'Sorry, there is no more' Talk about treating the runners well - this race definitely does! Thank you for another terrific race and I'll be back next year!

Not Bad But Not Good

With all the hype, I expected more. I ran the marathon. The 'packed trail' was really just sand and gravel for the first leg. I had to stop three times to dump rocks out of my shoes. The second trail had pretty large rocks that had already been loosened by the half marathoners. I saw two nasty falls. Trail was also too narrow. There were long sections where you were crossing paths with faster runners and half marathon runners. The after party food was unimpressive, which would be fine if they hadn't been calling it the best food ever (think microwaved pancakes). Didn't try the beer, line was way too long. Packet pick up was super easy. Town was very nice and restaurants were really great.

Course

Overall I had a great run. I must say, I know I wasn't the only one to make this mistake so I wanted to write. Please, in the future, where the half and full separate, put more volunteers/signs/ANYTHING to show the split. I NEVER saw the split, therefore missed it and ran the half, then more or less, did the half AGAIN. I had to leave the course to make up 4.75 miles that I'd missed. I then got back on the course to complete an entire 26.2 (GPS watch very helpful this day). (Also, I'd never been to Rehoboth before or did this marathon before, so it was an unfamiliar area to me.) What's unfortunate is that I don't even show up in the marathon results as having run the race, though I crossed the finish line (TWICE). I realize I didn't cross all the mats on the course, but I did cross several of them (and a couple more than once&) I know a few other runners would agree; please BETTER mark the split for half vs full. PLEASE. I ran my best marathon time ever, and now it's like it doesn't even count. I did receive a finish time text of 4:01:00, so somewhere out there it shows I did this.

Did Not Meet Expectations

Packet Pick Up was a breeze. Participants shirt is very nice. Race Day Parking was excellent. Plenty of spaces. Showed up at 6:10am and that was plenty early. Only two bathrooms at the start. This was a big miss. I saw several at the finish that was a 1/2 mile away. In my mind, 1/2 mile each way is too far to walk for a bathroom before the race. Course was tight. Streets were small and with the largest number of runners the race has had, it made for a tight first 3 miles until the half marathoners broke off. From miles 20-24 you were on a path that was only wide enough for two people. Because it was an out and back, if you wanted to pass, you had to be sure no one was coming in the opposite direction because there was no room. The footing during this stretch was difficult as there were large stones all over the path. Lots of out and backs throughout the course. One at 8.5 to 12 was on the berm of a highway and proved to be mentally difficult. Course contained many out and backs. I am typically a fan of out and backs, but this one contained far too many in my opinion. Water stations were tough. I had to stop my stride at each one due to the volunteers not appropriately holding the water/Gatorade. I often encountered a volunteer holding 4 cups in one hand and in order for me to grab one without spilling all, I had to come to a complete stop. This started at the very first water stop and was often the case. I appreciate the volunteers, but believe it is the job of the staff of the race to teach proper distribution practices. The volunteers and fellow runners were some of the nicest Ive met on a course. Spectators were sparse, but excellent when I saw them. Seemed to gather in large groups. Finish small, but nice. Finishers Medal was neat. I didn't much care for this race and would not recommend it for a Delaware marathon.

Excellent Race! Excellent organization

I am a local here, and I never miss this race. I love the camaraderie of all the awesome runners. This race is well organized by Race Director, Mary Beth Hannah Evans and a long list of volunteers. I enjoy volunteering at packet pick up as much as the run itself. The post race party is great; having plenty of food for everyone weather you are a vegetarian or meat lover. The course is beautiful and well marked. Its a perfect course and a perfect race!!

Scenic, flat course

Nice, scenic course with beach and woodland trail views. Easy parking, no traffic, plenty of water/Gatorade stations. My only 'complaint' is that the 5 of the last 6 miles is on a rail trail that is a little too narrow if you're in the large 10min/mile segment of runners. It wasn't exactly crowded, but if you were planning to kick up your pace here you'd be doing a lot of dodging.

Solid Race, Scenic Course

I ran this race in 2012, and it was a real pleasure to come in 2015 and see the change to the course. Still very flat and a PR/BQ is gettable. Now, the two out-and-backs on trails are wonderful, especially the stretch from Mile 3 to Mile 16+ in Cape Henlopen State Park. Really enjoyed this stretch. The second out-and-back trail, from mile 19-24+, is rockier and a bit harder on the feet, but still enjoyable. There aren't many fans on the course because of the trails. Aid was very consistent. Small suggestion: move the GU to the front of the aid so people can grab it, quickly eat, and down the nastiness with some water. But the GUs were appreciated, they were available at multiple points throughout the race. Another area of improvement: some more signage warning of the half/full split. That happened when the crowd was still heavy, and although there were several volunteers right at the split, I bet there were a few people with headphones not paying attention that missed it. Overall, a very enjoyable race. Nice tech short-sleeved T this year, plus a nice medal. Very impressive post-race food offerings and music. It gives you the chance to post a nice finishing time, definitely recommend.

A lot of trail, scenic, fun, smaller race

Rehoboth really welcomes the runners. They offered discounts to the eateries and were pleased to see us. The expo was pretty organized. Shirts were nice (unisex ran big) and the volunteers at the expo were having fun and drinking wine. This prompted my friend and I to do some wine tasting across the street, then boutique shopping (great stores for gifts for people who have everything) then a wonderful dinner. We stayed at The Breakers Hotel. It was a perfect location, just blocks from both the start and finish. It is a beach hotel so small, but very clean with on site parking. They let us do a late checkout and couldn't have been more accommodating. They don't provide breakfast though, but couldn't have made a better choice for location. The course was scenic, with a few glimpses of the ocean. Most was off the road on trails. This was a nice change and out of traffic. There were some winds though. The race has 176 feet of elevation so is mostly flat. The last 8 miles involve about 6 miles of a trail that is a little rougher than the initial trail, so I didn't like that at all. They had plenty of water, gatorade and gel. Volunteers were terrific but sometimes weren't ready with cups in hand. Course was well marked. I did very poorly in the race but I cannot complain about the race itself. The conditions were perfect in 2015, but I suspect that the wind can be a huge factor at times. It is definitely NOT a PR course for me...didn't like the last 6 miles of trail. I almost fell a lot, but I was tired too. There were several timing mats throughout the course, so cheaters beware. You cannot cheat this course and turn around early. I enjoyed it from the time I drove into Rehoboth until the end. Cute medal.

Can't Imagine A Better Choice For Delaware

This is my 31st state and 39th marathon overall. The Pros: Beautiful course: salt marsh/coastal plains/ocean views Nice changes of surface road to crushed gravel to road to packed dirt, nice for the feet Very active Facebook group, which let people 'get to know' each other before the race and also gave everyone access to the very responsive race organizers Great little town: cute, lots of great restaurants, lots of affordable lodging in walk-to-start-line range, friendly people Mild weather (and I have heard it's usually, but note not always, mild) Unlimited free street parking, start and finish close together so your car is an easy walk no matter where you parked Option of race morning packet pick-up After-party supposed to be really nice (I didn't go, so I don't know) The medal! One of my faves. Aid stations more than adequate and well-organized. Race size big enough to give it an 'event' feel, small enough that nothing was overcrowded (except the line at the party see below) The Cons: A few people who were really trying to get a fast time didn't like that so much of the race was on trails. I thought the trails were fine myself, but it is something to consider. I do feel like the website slightly understates the amount of trail in the race. Line for the after-party was horrendous, and it looked to be shoulder-to-shoulder under the tent as I walked around the outside trying to find a faster way in as I really had to get out of there quick. I was really cold and really hungry, but there was no food available at the finish line except Gatorade, everything else was under the tent with the prohibitive line to enter. I would've even been satisfied with a bagel or banana, but I didn't see anything and the people I asked just said it was in the tent. I had to stop at a service station on my way out of town to buy snacks. (I finished in 3:45 by the way... so not a late finisher.) Spectators not many on course, except in town. This is more a 'zone out with beautiful nature' race as opposed to a 'crowd support' race. Despite those few cons, overall many more pros than cons.

First time running Rehoboth

This was my fastest time ever. The course is definitely flat and if you're looking for a PR this is the race. Spectators were few and far between but very nice. This was a really small race and barely anyone was there an hour before the start. There was plenty of parking and you could easily show up at 6:45am and be fine. There were no corals and no pace teams. The half marathoners broke off to a separate course at mile 3 but there was never really any problems with congestion at the start. The course did not have enough bathrooms at all and I saw multiple runners (male and female) hitting the sides of the course. There seemed to be plenty of water/Gatorade but the stations are a bit farther apart than every 2 miles once you go in to the state park area. Post race food/drinks was excellent with a large spread of hot food and different beers.

Good Running Community - Okay Race

The location is nice for December. This was my first Rehoboth Beach Marathon. I found myself fishing around the website for answers to simple questions. The website needs a facelift. To find the informaion, I 'friended' the Facebook page. The race director is very prompt with answers. I thought many of the questions asked should be addressed and added to the website. Could have saved her lots of time. The course was nice. There were several 'out and backs' of which I am not a fan. I hate passing runners wondering when do I get to the turn around point, over and over again. The course LACKS BATHROOMS. I get it. It's on scenic trails, but for the love of God, the first port-a-potty at mile SEVEN...and there is only ONE?! I chewed 6 minutes of my time because I HAD to go. At mile 13ish, I had to walk off the course to the nearest bathroom to go again. It was one of those days for me and so disappointing that there were not enough bathrooms. The running community for this race is nice. It's rarevery 'home-townish.' Perhaps if I didn't need the course amenities, I would have liked the race more. It was okay.

A Must-Do December Marathon

I can't say enough positive things about this race. It's scenic, flat, and fast. There was no wind at all this year, and although there had been rain earlier in the week, the trail sections of the course were completely free of any puddles or standing water. The volunteers and race directors were top notch (one of the race directors has a very active FB page for the marathon where she promptly answers any questions leading up to the race). Water stops were plentiful, and GUs were provided at three different spots on the course. They changed the course this year to include 3 miles of new multi-use trails that recently opened just north of Rehoboth in Cape Henlopen State Park, and that section of the course was definitely my favorite part of the race. If you want to join the 50 States Club, run Rehoboth as your Delaware race. If you want to do a December marathon, run Rehoboth. If you want to attempt a BQ, run Rehoboth. You won't regret it.

Flat, scenic, well organized, friendly race!

I ran the December 2014 half-marathon last week and it is now my favorite race of the year! I loved that it is small (rolled out of my hotel at 6 am, parked a block from finish line/Starbucks, did bib pick up and had time to warm up!). Flat! Loved that at least 5 miles of the half were on trails. Even though a small # of participants and spectators, the way the course is laid out made it feel bigger! Loved the state trooper hollering support. And the food tent! Hot food, pancakes, salad, bacon, mac and cheese and 3 choices of craft beer. Just outstanding.

Classic small town race

This was my first road marathon in 2012 and remains a sentimental favorite. I returned for the third straight year intrigued by the course change. A lot of people whined about the additional trail, but I loved it. I was worried there would be boring straightaways, but the section through the marsh really was beautiful. When the weather cooperates, as it did, this course is just about perfect. (My training was not, so my time this year was a lot worse.) Note that there is a fair amount of rail trail/crushed stone instead of asphalt, but it's predominantly fast and flat. The congestion at the start works itself out pretty quickly, but if you are hoping to go out at a quick pace get to the front. Parking is fairly easy so don't feel you have to stay somewhere near the start. There are several great restaurants in town that are still open in December, and tax-free shopping. There are frequent water stops with helpful volunteers. Crowd support is minimal but enthusiastic. The post-race party is always a good time. Free beer, plenty of water, lots of food unless your finish time is over 5.5 hours, a DJ, and the chance to meet other runners. Overall, there is just a very positive, warm vibe.

very well done

Scenic and gentle course. Terrific volunteers and staff. a post-race party that was among the best. Class act awarding a runner finishing her 50 states with a Delaware plaque. I highly recommend this race.

One of trhe best

This was my 48th overall marathon on 40 different courses. This rates among the best. I am a no frills guy so the simple expo was welcome. Parking feet from the start was fantastic. I wish they had opened the public restrooms which would have alleviated the lines a bit at the porta potties but that is a minor issue. The course was the best. It is as flat as you could hope and most of it was on firm packed crushed gravel which was so easy on the knees. The scenery on the trail portions was beautifulbay and marsh. The aid stations were easily maneuvered and the volunteers always smiling. Plentiful aid stations also. We got very lucky on the weather. The rain held off until after noon and the temps were perfect in the mid 40's with a cloud cover and no wind, perfect for running a marathon. If you are trying to knock off Delaware, this is the race to run. Thank you to the race organizers, all of the volunteers and the spirited spectators.

Fun & fast qualifier!

Added on late following a disappointing Philadelphia marathon and could not have been more pleased. Have run several smaller marathons previously but none more organized with such fun, enthusiastic staff and volunteers. Parked steps from the start/finish with morning-of bib pickup, 45 minutes prior to start, couldn't have been easier. Such a pleasure to not have to sit around trying to keep warm for several hours prior to race start. Ample restroom facilities few feet from the start line. Crowds at the start/finish were great, much more sparse along the course but was more than expected for a late fall beach town-based small race. Course was a nice mix of roads and gravel paths (a nice respite for the legs). Spectators were supportive and on-course fluid stop volunteers were great and well-spaced/stocked. The military cadets and traffic police offered encouragement. What a friendly run! And did I mention fast? Some very minor hills through the park otherwise flat, flat, flat. Headwind on way out was welcomed tailwind for the return. Finish after-party tent was unparalleled. Plenty of non-alcoholic variety for rehydration and even more choice for a well-deserved pint following a truly enjoyable race. Food was great and, yes, a departure from the traditional postrace fare of banana/orange/bagel. Didn't find a pancake with berries to be too heavy however despite other posted comments. But I didn't choose the race for the food/party (but if you do, would highly recommend!), but rather for the opportunity to BQ. Outstanding race on all measures!

My Highest Recommendation!

This was my 9th marathon. I did not register in time to run any of my other options this year, so this, being in December was my last chance. The folks on their FaceBook page assured me that I would not be disappointed, and I was not. The organization for this race is much better than my last marathon, which was much larger. Each mile was clearly marked, there were course directors where they needed to be, and it was not too crowded on the course. The hydration stations were every 2 miles there were plenty volunteers and they did a good job. The course is very flat and fast. There is some wind, being next to the ocean, but not too cold for December, and the flatness added to the wind did not compare to the Pennsylvania hills I'm used to training on. The after party was very nice - an opportunity to really socialize with fellow runners after the race, in the shelter of a big tent. The hometown crowd was very friendly and supportive, but if you are accustomed to big races where people cheer from every mile of the course this one is a little quiet through many of the middle miles. I went to try to qualify for Boston, and I succeeded, with over a minute to spare. Out of 9 marathons I've run since before 2001, I give this one my highest recommendation. If you are a 50 stater, this is your December marathon. If you are trying to qualify, or run a pr, this is a good one. Oh, and bonus: great shopping and eating in this seaside resort town, so bring your family and make a weekend of it. My wife loved it!

Nice but muddy and windy flat course

Pros: Flat and scenic. Small field and plenty of water, Gatorade and gels at aid stations. Fine volunteer support on course. Very supportive crowd! Plenty of parking near the start. Nice beach town and great finishers medal. Cons: Pathetic organization prior to race: no one knew where was the start or bib pick up. The race website is austere and provides almost no information. At bib pick up, everyone was confused and I was not given a t-shirt, I figured they were being handed out at finish line. Trail was very muddy this year, this is no ones fault though. Few porta-potties, expect to wait 2-3 minutes to use them. Very crowded at the start, expect to pass a lot of people for the first 2 miles. Extremely crowded at the finish line tents. Some talk about lots of food, I only saw Mac and cheese and rolls, but I didn't go in as it was almost impossible (too crowded) to get in there. $130 + $10 fee for a small and simple race...quite expensive. Overall: Despite the cons, I would do the race again. I wouldn't recommend this race as a first marathon though. My opinion.

Great choice for flat December marathon

Pros: 1. Lots of volunteers and support on the course. The volunteers were upbeat positive and supportive 2. Flat and the 'trails' provided a forgiving surface and less pounding 3. Amazing after party, warm tent with LOTS of food and beer Cons: 1. Runners not appropriately seeding themselves at the start. Groups of walkers for the half marathon must have lined up right at the front creating crazy bottlenecks in the first mile. They made an announcement about this before the race but it's hard to hear announcements. They need pace signs OR better yet start the half marathon an hour after the marathon starts. You wouldn't (I hope) start a 10k and a half marathon together so why is this acceptable. Plus,as a marathoner, I don't keep or wear shirts that say half marathon on them. 2. Fan signs, this was weird, there were 7-10 signs on the course that had a$$, bi+ch & tit in them. Apparently there are people who find this motivational? I find it to be pollution and I wasn't there with young children. However, the vast majority of fans were amazing, shouting encouragement.

probably my favorite 1/2 .

Love the course, people, organization. I come up from Dallas every year for this one. Just a fun, relaxed run. However, if you run for personal best, to beat everyone, this may not be for you. The route is lovely, but can get tight on the trail.

It is a fine race

This race is a good basic, fairly no frills race. Although its price is a bit higher than you would expect for the frills of this race. 2013 was a cool (40 or so) day with a fair amount of wind. (in your face much of the time thru the first 17 or so.) The course is an out and back with a bit of an additional loop at the start. Being a coastal marathon it is mostly flat and as noted above it had the wind I would expect of a coastal race. The course looped through a couple of parks, a few neighborhoods and had a 2-3 mile stretch (each way) on a fairly wide trail. So there was a good variety of terrain on the course. Water stops were plentiful. course / marshals were well marked and placed. (this was important in the park you went thru in the mid teens as there were a ton of turns) Spectators....if you brought your own, it was pretty easy for them to see you. Otherwise, there were no significant spectators on the course. Post race...we did not stick around as were we driving right home. But if you did, there seemed to be a pretty good party going on in the tent they used for expo / post race. The expo was not much more than number pickup. Other good / bad about the race.... (1)The did seem to squeeze the course into the space as there were a number of times that you did short out and back to add mileage (2)Personal peeve...the half and the full run together for the first 9. I understand why, but is always disorienting. (3) Personal peeve #2...I ran further and paid more than the half marathon people. But I got the same shirt. (4) If you are into medals, a HUGE medal.

What a great small town race. Pretty course especially the 'trail' sections. Fun area to visit and get holiday shopping done! Packet pick up easy. After party fun great food beer and champagne cocktails right after you cross the line. Highly recommend!

Well Organized Small Town Race

A small town marathon done right sums up this race. Very well organized from the packet pick-up (quick and easy), pasta dinner next door plus many hotel options right by the course. The amount of volunteers is amazing. Well staffed aid stations, plenty of people providing directions and the post race spread was superb (no stale bagels/bananas for food - try burgers and beer). The only con would be some areas of the course where there were short out and backs to make the distance (1/10th mile for example). They seem out of place when running a long distance. A very well run race and worth the trip. Plan to come back again for this one.

Small state, Big Success

I have now run marathons in 22 states and the only after party that comes close to this one is Little Rock. A smaller, very well organized marathon with some of the nicest volunteers I have met. The course is beautiful and the town is fantastic. Never ending 'real' food and craft beer at the finish, in a heated tent no less. The shirt and the medal are top notch, even an exchange table for the shirt sizes. So many quality restaurants just steps from the venue, Rehoboth is fantastic! A must do for 50 Staters!

No post-race food!

I think they race organizers increased the number of 1/2 marathoners this year and they ate all of the food! Last year I finished the same time and there was plenty to eat. This year it was gone. Have the half on a separate date or hold back some food for those of us busting out 26.2 miles! Not coming back!

I am on the fence...

I have been thinking abut this for a while. I appreciate the opportunity to run and see different parts of the country but this race just does not have it. There were very tight turns, a narrow trail that got crowded as the other runners came back through, a boring run through a subdivision. Worse, they ran out of gatorade at the later stops (I was by no means a back of the packer) and the volunteers at the waterstops were (at times) joking with one another and not attentive. The police were cranky at the start. It was by no means as enjoyable as I had hoped.

Nice, small marathon

I ran this year's race as my Delaware marathon. It is a nice, low stress, smaller marathon. Rehobeth is a really picturesque beach community on the Delaware coast. Since it is off season finding hotel accomidations is a snap. Parking the morning of the race is also a breeze. I arrived 45 minutes early and found a spot just a few blocks from the start. The expo is modest, set up in a tent next door to a running store in Rehobeth. But if you need any last minute supplies the running store is there for you. The course is nice. We get some ocean views, some neighborhoods, a nice section thru Cape Henlopen State Park and a 3 mile section (run twice) on a packed gravel trail that runs through a pretty wooded area. The race is essentially an out and back course and the gravel trail is a little narrow when the fast half marathoners are coming back. This isn't a big deal but you do need to keep alert here. The race is quite flat. You hit a few hills in Henlopen park but otherwise a runner can really settle into a steady effort. The previous complaints about a lack of portapotties are accurate but there were plenty of 'off road' options. There were plenty of water stops and gel was handed out also. I carry my own gel so I'm sure how many gel stops there were. I'm a slower runner (4:45) and there was plenty of support for runners at the back of the pack. I liked the medal and (tech) long sleeve t-shirt. I picked up one of last year's sweatshirts for a bargain and its a nice sweatshirt! There were very few fans once we left the Rehobeth beach area but its about what you'd expect from a race of this size. My biggest complaint was with the post race food. The expo tent served as the post race area and there was lot's of food. Unfortunately all of it was 'heavy food'; burgers, macaroni and cheese. Many people (me) can't handle heavy food like that after a race. I couldn't find a bananna, bagel or pretzel. In a store just out of town I ran into a fellow runner who complained about the lack of simple, light post race options. I realize that post race food spreads are very popular and most people can stomach this kind of food right after a marathon but not everyone can. Race directors please don't forget us while planning the menu.

Not Ready for Prime TIme

This course was short in 2011 and long in 2012.25 miles too long. If you are running for a time goal or a BQ, you are taking your chances. I spoke to many runners who missed their BQ due to the course error, one by 2 seconds. The race director did not even publicly acknowledge the error until Runner's World posted a story about it, and even then didn't seem to care all that much about it. No word to runners at all. I wouldn't trust that next year they will get it right. If you are just looking for a catered long run followed by beer and burgers, go for it. Register early though, otherwise it will cost you $130. Pretty expensive for a small town fun run.

Course incorrect again ...

This was my favorite marathon from last year but ... we were assured that the issues with the course being inaccurately marked in 2011 would be taken care of. Unfortunately, from what I have read, well over 100 marathoners (including yours truly) were directed to run an additional 1/4+ mile. Many of us were trying to qualify for Boston or set a new Personal Record. Now if you are not worried about qualifying for Boston or setting a new PR this is a great marathon (or ultra marathon); however, if you do care about having an accurate course with course marshals directing you correctly then please don't be fooled again into thinking you will actually run 26.2mi, I know I won't.

One of my favorites

I run maybe a dozen marathons each year, and this was the first time running this one. I must say that I found the course, the people, the fans, the party, all fantastic. I have never been to Delaware before, and didn't know what to expect. But I was overwhelmed by the quaint beauty and scenery of the run, and the warmth of the people both in the race and supporting it. It was well organized, the party was a great time, and everyone made this guy from out-of-town feel very welcome. In the more than 40 marathons I have run, I would rank this easily in the top 5 for enjoyment. Great job. I will be back again.

The secret's out & this race is getting too big

This was my 4th time running Rehoboth, but 1st time in their marathon. The crowds were noticably larger this year than in the past, and most of the new runners seem to be the large-city-race crowd. Way too many people were wearing headphones and littering their Gu wrappers all over the beautiful trails instead of leaving it at aid stations. On one stretch where runners had a lane coned on each side of the road, I watched headphoners running in the middle of the road oblivious that a car was behind them and unable to hear me shouting to move the heck over! If you like big city races, keep doing those and stop ruining this low-key friendly race. Some runners were directed off course for about a 1/4-mile detour due to markings leftover from a marathon the week before (which I also ran). I would say it's the runners' faults but the organizers do a poor job letting us know the course ahead of time (the course map on the website is very vague.) The afterparty tent was wayyyy too crowded and you couldn't even move in there to get food or beer. After the awards were presented, the crowd finally thinned out and it was a good time. I used to put this as my #1 race on the calendar each year, but am not sure I want to come back next year if it keeps growing too much too fast.

beautiful fast course!

Small and low key in all the right ways, this is a race for runners. If you want an 'event race' this is not your marathon. If you want a beautiful course with some wonderful crushed gravel paths that are great on the legs, minimal hills, and fabulous overlook about half way through, this is the race for you! Packet pick up was simple as could be, and since it's off season, fairly easy to get a hotel in walking distance of the start for a good price. Great little beach town! The start was a great low key one where you can get there 20 minutes before the race and still have time to use the pottys. Aid every couple miles w/ water and Gatorade, gu every so often, and pretzels at mile 20. Really nice volunteers - very friendly! Yeah, a couple miles of the path was a little tight when you're sharing it with the faster half marathoners making their turn around, but I didn't feel it impeded me at all. Folks were all generally very considerate. I'm working my way to 50 states, and with 38 fulls behind me, this was my 7th fastest time ever. It's a great course for a fast time! I wasn't even out to run that fast. The course is just that friendly! The post race party - dang. I have NEVER seen anything like it. All the beer you can drink from the 16 mile brewery, and the spread was insane!! Pancakes with tons of toppings (blueberry, cherrys, etc), BBQ, veggie burgers, mac and cheese, coffee, oh my gosh!! I was hanging out until the end of the party with some friends and they just kept refilling stuff. Usually the half marathoners eat everything and this party just kept going. I was beyond impressed.

Really low-key but no crowds or stress. Volunteers were mostly not very interested and crowd support was light. Not good for first time marathon but for a laid back event in a pretty town in December, it was lovely.

I was Impressed

It was a simple marathon. Easy packet pick-up and great after-party. I am a 7hr finisher and usually you experience limited if any race support in the latter miles and the beer and food is all gone by the time your finish. Not here. ample hydration along the course. Cyclist checking on you. Patient and enthusiastic support staff. There was food and beer at the end. The course was scenic and interesting. Wished I had time to read some of the milestones. Not a lot of spectators and the runners are really fast. There must have been at least 1.5 hours between me and the runner before me. The course was well marked and not all of it was on asphalt. We went through a path that was soil I think. It was a bit muddy in a few spots, but it was kind on the body.

Very scenic race, recommended for 50-staters!

As an aspiring 50-stater I decided this would be my DE race, and I wasn't disappointed. Some aspects weren't as good as others, but overall I highly recommend this event if you need a DE state medal. This flat, fast race was called the Rehoboth Seashore Marathon with good reason: when we weren't running through residential areas, mile after mile we ran past sandy dunes full of sea grass, forests filled with pine trees, and the calm ocean. It was very scenic and had a nice natural backdrop. Cape Henlopen was breathtakingly beautiful, we had such gorgeous views of the ocean, not to mention cannons and observation towers from WWII. Some things to note: The course is more or less an out-and-back, which may appeal to some. Some of the course is unpaved dirt and gravel rails-to-trails path which can be a little narrow, and there was some mud to contend with on the out-and-back. The half-marathoners turn around past this point, so you have to share the trail as a two-way path with the elite/faster halfers. Also, the weather can likely be a factor: we had overcast skies and high humidity, and it was also warmer than expected. But some years I hear it's quite cold and windy. We lucked out! There were plenty of fuel stations stocked with enthusiastic volunteers and plenty of Gu, Chomps, water and Gatorade. So much that I actually skipped a couple of them. I will also say that there was a really big lack of port-a-jons. I saw more than my share of runners relieving themselves in the bushes, and if there was one port-a-jon at a water stop there was a line waiting to use it. I never saw more than one at a time, and even at the start line there didn't seem to be too many. I couldn't even find them in the finish area! I also don't recall seeing a single first aid station and wonder what would have happened if someone needed assistance. Luckily I didn't see any incidents that were worrisome. If finish line food is your thing, the spread was impressive: pancakes with fruit toppings, burgers and pulled pork sandwiches, macaroni and cheese, Caesar salad, and lots of beer. You won't walk away hungry! The shirts were good quality, and the medal designs were OK. If asked if I would do this race again, I definitely would. Sure it had some small flaws, but it truly was a beautiful course that made it worth the trip!

Great marathon, not so great post-marathon

This was a great course, the organizers were wonderful, and the post-race staffing was very attentive. Not a lot of spectators, but I knew that going in. My only issue was with the food and organization at the finish line. Not everyone can stomach burgers and beer after a race (or wants to bother with making a salad, which you'd have to eat standing up since the tent was packed). Overall great race though!

Fast course, great scenery

Very pleasant course, quite rural. Ran up to a state park and back, which was a pleasure to run in. Also had some gravel trail running, which was fantastic (maybe 6 miles total?). Scenery was very nice throughout, roads aren't crowded. Good aid stations; some did a good job of separating water from Gatorade, others could've been better. GU available at several points, but they weren't handing out, you grab it off the table yourself. 2011's was apparently shorted, and they fixed that. However, they also added a 0.5-mile out-and-back in the state park between miles 17 and 18 that isn't on the online course map. I don't run with a GPS, but when I put it to Google Pedometer, I came up with 26.74 miles. Am curious to hear what the Garmin-heads say. Beer/food tent was lively at the finish. Burgers, pancakes, mac/cheese, beans, salad. Nice long-sleeve tech shirt. Bag drop worked fine. Good band at the finish. Parking is easy, and downtown Rehoboth Beach is a wonderful place to host a race. Definitely do your pre-race prep on the beach before the sun rises, it's well worth it. Overall, if my measurement was correct, this course needs to figure out its distances. Otherwise, it's a fast one (very few hills) and I'd recommend.

Course mismeasured AGAIN

Extra 0.3 mile loop added between miles 17 and 18. I was right at the transition when they figured it out (7:50 something pace). Anybody after this didn't run the extra distance. Very disappointing, missing my goal by 2 minutes because of it. Feel bad for those that missed their BQ because of poor organization again.

Beautiful course... But left me thirsty!

I ran this race in 2012 with 2 others after the NYC marathon was canceled. Although nothing compares to the excitement of NY, we did enjoy the race overall. Pros: the trail section of the race was amazing. At one point we had great views of the ocean, as well as rivers, streams, and beautiful fields. The town is adorable, with tax free outlets. Great tech shirts by Brooks with both men's and women's sizing. Military personnel handed out water and Gatorade. Course was extremely flat with only small bumps here and there. Volunteers were friendly and helpful. There was a ton of yummy looking food at the after party, including free beer. Cons: water and Gatorade stations were too sparse, about every 2 miles. The tables were very short and often popped up with no warning. Cups were small and only half full. Also be advised that this is an open course and at times we ran on the shoulder to avoid traffic. The after party was crowded with non-runners and Gatorade wasn't available; nor was chocolate milk or other recovery foods (at least not that we could find). Obviously it's a small town, so there weren't a lot of fans. The ones that were there were fabulous. Overall, nice weather, great town, great course. You might want to carry fluids.

Nice course, So-So organization

Bottom line first: Great town, nice course, good after party, very expensive ($120), poor race morning organization. I ran this race in 2011. The weather was perfect and Rehoboth Beach is a great place to spend the weekend any time of year. Kudos also to the after-party. Beer, hot food and plenty of it, all served in a sheltered tent. It was so much nicer than picking a bagel and banana from a bin. Love Rehoboth. Liked the course. Enjoyed the lunch. Two fans were handing out hugs! I saw them at three different points. It takes a specially enthusiastic person to hug sweaty strangers. Who can resist free hugs, and what other race offers them? Bad race morning organization gave a sour note to an otherwise fine event. The website advertises 5:45 am packet picket. At 5:45 the packet pickup area was empty. Dead. No organizers present. Fortunately the coffee shop around the corner was open. I spoke to the owner, and it turned out the race organizers did a poor job letting other local businesses know about the race. The coffee shop owner found out about it just the day before and scrambled to open early. Kind of surprising in a tourist town that the organizers did not tell coffee shops they might have 1500 customers so open early! At about 6:00, the organizers finally started setting up. When I picked up my race packet (I was practically first in line) they could not find a large shirt. The person handling me just gave me an XL and moved on. So now I have a shirt that doesn't fit. Great. The port-a-potties at the starting line did not show up until about 6:30, maybe half an hour before the race. Bad planning on the organizer's part. Would I run it again? Maybe. It is in Rehoboth Beach and I don't need much excuse to head down there. I would pay the early registration price of $75 but do not want to commit to a marathon 9 months in advance. Also, I would pick up my packet the day before and avoid the race morning disappointment.

Nice course. Awesome post-race buffet. But Pricey!

Everything I want in a small race except an affordable price. The course is flat, fast and interesting although we fought a tough wind on the way out. The post race spread was awesome! A heated tent with free microbrew was great after the race. Other have mentioned to course mistake this year. I do think the organizers should have said something. I docked a star for that. I don't expect to see spectators for a small race but they were out there. Thanks, cowbell guy!

Great race, BUT.................

I would rank this race as one of the best I've run, great course, great weather. I love that the start/finish area is right downtown Rehoboth, I was able to walk to the start from the house we rented. I destroyed my P.R. by about 7 minutes!!!! BUT!!! there was a reason for the superfast course, it was too short! By about a 1/4 mile, huge mistake! I do understand mistakes happen and in the grand scheme of things, not a huge deal, but I think the problem is being handled terribly! They knew of the problem before the race was even finished and still have not put word out to the runners (not that I've seen). They should have let the runners know when they put the results out, I'm sure there are a lot of folks walking around who think they have a B.Q. time but do not. A little communication would go a long way!!!

Great choice for Delaware

I loved this event. My family came here for vacation a few times when I was a kid. It was a nice sentimental journey to those times. The course is fabulous. A lot of variety, nice rails-to-trails sections, very interesting WWII state park. I agree that the organizers could work on getting the little loops out of the late part; however, one of the loops took runners up to one of the more impressive artillery placements and was worth the effort to go up there. Personally, I would be hesitant to recommending changing a thing. Nice medal, I bought a sweatshirt from the running shop that puts this on - now one of my favorite sweatshirts. Just a terrific event. Oh, and for goodness sakes - don't miss the Dogfish Head Brewery for dinner before or after - great place.

My favorite!

This was a wonderful little race, nearly perfectly executed, and my absolute favorite out of 17 domestic and international full marathons. Pros: -Plenty of post race food and beer for a 5 hour + finisher including pancakes with several toppings, macaroni and cheese, and the most wonderful veggie burgers I've ever had. -Scenic course, and though I'm not afraid of hills, it was mercifully flat. Perfect weather. Charming little town, and I people are unequivacally nicer here than where I live ;-) -Easy race day packet pickup... I booked a hotel within 2 blocks of the start/finish booked only a month prior to race day. -What the spectators lack in quantity, they make up for in quality. There were three wonderful ladies who appeared on at least seven different points on the course. I was always wondering when I would see them next, and that made the Delaware experience exemplary. -Though expensive, I don't see the cost was an issue. I feel I got what I paid for with this one, unlike some of the RNR races. Minor cons: -Probably could have used more port-o-johns, especially at Mile 4. I opted for the bushes instead of a several minute wait. Beware, there are thorns in the bushes, and apparently I was allergic to them, so pants would have been useful. However, although unpleasant, that was NOT the race director's fault :-) -The website was down too often including for some hours the night before the race: I wasn't sure when race start was, and the day after the race.

Fantastic marathon!

I loved this marathon! If you like a smaller marathon with beautiful surroundings and cooler weather....run Rehoboth. AND after the marathon you have many excellent food options including Dogfish Head Brew Pub. The course was fast even with some strong winds at times. Overall a great race and great town.

Flat, fast, and senic

I had no trouble running more then 5 minutes under the new Boston time requirement and so I am happy camper. However I think the course may have been short (like maybe 0.2 miles?). Also there was a bunch of wind in some locations, but generally it was sheltered.

Nice course, flat and scenic

Nice 'small' marathon. Nice town, scenic course. Miles 12-18 are exposed to ocean winds that can be cold at this time of year. Good food selection after the race, including veggie burgers, sliders, salad, mac/cheese, pancakes, etc. Course was mis-marked at mile 3 (and maybe mile 4), but it was still 26.2 at the end. Run through salt marsh area is really nice on the trail, which is crushed stone.

A Wonderful Experience

I initially picked this race because in the four previous marathons I have run the temperatures have been in the low to mid 80's. This even included a Florida marathon in January and a Virginia marathon in March. Because I don't do heat well, I felt this was perfect. A few weeks before this marathon I developed some muscle strain issues in my legs and considered not showing up. I am so glad I changed my mind. This marathon was a wonderful experience. The course was diverse and interesting. I have read previous posts where runners did not like the State Park area. I though it was great, as was the trail. The homes I passed were georgeous. My least favorite section was the out and back roadway through Lewes, but even this was tolerable. My biggest compliment goes to the volunteers. They were terrific. Every water stop was well stocked, even for the back of the pack runners; like me. The volunteers encouraged me to contine. This was so helpful, especially in the late miles. The coordination between the civilians and the police was terrific. Everyone was friendly and so polite. I tried to thank each one of them. Somewhere around the 18th mile, near the water, the wind was really whipping. Yes it does get windy here! I came upon four young girls huddled in a building enclosure covered in blankets. They were freezing. As soon as these young ladies so me coming, they came out with the water and gatorade and said encouraging things with a smile. That's dedication! My wife did the half marathon and loved it. I amsure we will do this run again. I haven't run any race, of any distance, that was more well organized than this one. Congratulations. I believe the race will grow, but I hope it does not get so big it loses it's small race charm.

Nice town, flat, fast course, well organized.

The packet pickup and the post race party are in a HUGE tent right beside the running store and the finish line and the tent had heat which was nice considering the chilly wind that day. The course has some city streets some crushed gravel bike trail and some back roads. It was windy and a little on the cool side but not bad. Very well organized event. Cost for mailing an award was steep if you couldn't stick around for the award ceremony.

Flat, Fast and Fabulous

This is the 3rd time I have run this course and 2 of the 3 were PR's. It is flat and such a pretty course, 42 degrees at the start. The start is just steps from the ocean with the sun rising and the finish has never ending hot food and beer. They even had veggie burgers! Also had a choice of race shirt color, no one does that. Staff and town were super friendly the whole weekend. Even got tax free Xmas shopping done at the outlets. Everything was within 2-5 blocks of the race. My favorite marathon of the 18 states I have done! Great job Rehoboth Beach Running Co.!

Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day

Nicely done RBRC! I felt like I was back in the Midwest. Where did that wind come from? Nevertheless, it was a great race on a fast course. The race was very well pulled off and much larger than I anticipated. I honestly didn't expect 1K+ runners in the half and full marathons. The temperature was perfect. The 15-20 kt wind was in our faces most of the way out on the out-and-back course (with a loop around the state park thrown in) but that put the wind at our backs for most of the last 6 miles...great for tired legs The only thing lacking was huge crowds feeding our egos as we run by. The Good: For a smaller race, this was pulled off very well. RBRC knows how to keep things moving. The course was clearly marked and the water stations were well spaced and well run. Packet pickup was smooth in the tent outside the store (the tent was heated which was great post-race). Medals and shirts look pretty good. Traffic control was superb...even the stretches where runners going both ways had to share the road. Having a controlled center vehicle lane was a great idea. I never felt at risk. Kudos to the municipal support from the police, fire, emergency services, and park district....and the outstanding volunteers, too! The post race spread was great! Hot pancakes, cold beer, and massage tables in the heated tent. Ahhh..... The Bad: Can some of the small loops and out-and-back spikes in the park be replaced by using neighborhood streets? One or two blocks added into the early part of the course would eliminate some of the 'run around the parking lot perimeter' loops in the park. The water station in the middle of the cinder trail (near 23rd mile marker) should be moved farther away from the road intersection by about 50 yards. The posts to keep vehicles off the cinder trail create a hazard with 2 way runner traffic in a very narrow area. The Ugly: Not sure there really was any. No George Thorogood and the Delaware Destroyers show at the finish, perhaps? Y'all done good. All in all, this is a race I would return to run again. You have a hidden treasure here. Guarantee this event continues to grow.

Nice town and course but way overpriced

I ran this to cross Delaware off of my list. It has the potential to be a good/very good event, and I suspect it will get there one day if the organizers keep at it. PROS * relatively flat and fairly scenic course, with decent views of the Atlantic Ocean in some places * great water stops with enthusiastic volunteers * beautiful, clean beach town with friendly residents * GREAT Hotel - Hotel Rehoboth (at race finish) * good finishers medal * although very few of them came out, the supporters that did were enthusiastic and friendly, as were the police/firemen manning the intersections CONS * far to expensive for a race of this caliber ($120) * no expo * pre-race pasta fest had most of its tables with no chairs and the pasta was so-so ($15 a head extra) * mile markers seemed off substantially early-on Overall, the foundation exists for a solid event. I encourage the organizers to keep at it! Thanks Rehoboth.

Loved it and will run again next year

Prerace: As a rookie on the course, the organizers could have done a better job of letting runners know where to be and when (I planned on picking up my packet in the am of the race). However, it turned out to be very easy to pickup packets and everything was fairly low key and low stress on race day. Course: I loved it. I've run NYC 3x (3:53, 3:36, and 3:23) but it has been a while since those times. Really enjoyed the beach aspect of the course including the part in the former Ft. Miles. The trail run from miles 22-24 saved my race (love trail running and would have bonked and pulled out otherwise). Post race: didn't attend the after party and still haven't seen my official time as the web site is down. Ran an unofficial 4:06 but would like to know my actual time. Very fast course but hit some headwinds at miles 8-12 that blew me up. Spectators / support: There weren't that many spectators on the course but those who were out were very enthusiastic. Support was fantastic and the race was well maintained. Finish: the course finish was a little confusing and I didn't like running through a high traffic area at the end, but would return in any case.

great conditions

Great place to PR. Temps in the high 30s or low 40s. Only one real uphill stretch (which ends with a nice ocean view). The only imperfection was the wind off the ocean, and even that wasn't too bad (and it was a tailwind on the way back to town). But if you need crowd support, look elsewhere: it's a small town in the winter, with only sporadic spectators. My only complaint is about the shirt: it's not terribly attractive, and everyone (full and half) gets the same one. The medal is okay, but at least they're different for each event.

Scenic course, some organizational issues

Pros: - Course is scenic, going through nice seaside towns, farmland, and woods. Part of the course is on park paths, part on residential roads. Very flat, and with cold weather it's good if you're looking for a fast time. - Day-of-race packet pickup available. - No hassle or long waits in the start area. - Easy to park close to start/finish area. - Not overcrowded. - Great well-stocked finish area with heated tent, varied selection of food, and good beer. Cons: - Course was short by about a quarter mile. Mile three was not measured correctly and it ended up being just under 26. Hopefully they'll resolve this for 2012. - Ran out of some shirt sizes before day-of-race pickup. - If you're into large crowds of cheering spectators, there aren't many, especially in the park areas. Those who were there were great. Overall, a good scenic small marathon, but needs to resolve some organizational issues.

Beautiful course with lots of variety,

Wonderful race made easy by lots of parking, and a varied course. Loved running on the rail trail the best, it was awesome. Only bad side of the race I noticed is that the food/beer was gone or practically gone before all the runners came in.

Well-run quiet, flat cool-season marathon

I ran the RB Marathon this morning and here are my fresh thoughts on the race: COURSE: Miles 1-6: Wind through the town of Rehoboth Beach and the extreme southern part of the state park. The town is quite nice when you get away from the touristy main strip. Miles 7-10: Junction & Breakwater Trail. Loved it! Lots of half marathoners today and they cut back and returned on this trail to the finish. Miles 11-13.5: Into Lewes and a long stretch of highway to the Cape Henlopen SP. The race was run on the shoulder of the road; I had no problems with the crown of the road. My least favorite part of the race was crossing the bridge into Lewes; something about running on the metal grid bridge was unsettling. Personal problem, I know... Miles 13.5-17: Really nice stretch through the state park. Nice views of dunes, the bunkers, barracks, and other remnants of the war. Very scenic. Miles 17-22: Long boring stretch on Hwy 9 back into Lewes. Turned back onto Gills Neck Rd / 267 and it was better. Miles 22-25: Back onto the Junction & Breakwater Trail. The trail was my mental anchor helping me through the middle miles of the race. I love trail running and looked forward to these three miles. Miles 25-26.2: Fast finish into Rehoboth Beach, with decent crowd support at the end. ORGANIZATION & VOLUNTEERS: Top.Notch. Thanks everyone for all the hard work. POST-RACE: The tent at the finish was busy and warm. Plenty of food that looked like it might be tasty but I had no appetite. The massage was divine. At the Philadelphia Marathon 3 weeks prior, I had a 1/2 mile painful walk to my car. At Rehoboth Beach, it was less than 100 yards. Loved it. SUMMARY: Weather was perfect! It was mid-30s and cloudy at the start and climbed into the mid-40s with clear skies (oops, I forgot the shades). The breeze was stiff, especially in the unprotected areas, but I do not believe it negatively affected my time. After dealing with the massive crowds in Philadelphia and Washington D.C. this fall, the Rehoboth Beach Marathon was a very nice change of pace. Oh, and I scored a 19 minute PR and qualified for Marathon Maniacs. I'll be back.

A must add December race

First, the town is lovely and the people accommodating and welcoming. It is a summer beach town so when people come to town in Dec, the streets, shops and restaurants came alive. Well done. The race course is very flat and if you want a PR to wrap the year or try for Boston, this may be the race. The weather can be iffy and count on cold wind (as you would any beach venue). Wind today out of north so when heading up the coast, there were some personally challenging stretches but that is just fine. Very little fans along the way and some very long, lonely stretches. Nice to see some local kids out cheering runners on in spots (even though they were Steelers fans! :) There were several miles of non-pavement but it was packed gravel and fine to keep your pace. Roads were not closed to traffic but kudos to the locals and police for keeping runners safe and without the need to stop. Parts of course had return runners coming back at you and the road or trail got very narrow. Again, not a huge race so not a big problem but it is something to note. Although small race, the cost was high enough to allow for a gel or protein/carb bar handout among the way. Organization was excellent as registration, start, and finish were well done (good food and beer if you want at the end!). No corrals but semi-organized by pace time. No worries of course with a small race and chip-timing but just don't look for your corral as there aren't any. Results posted at venue fast but not online fast enough in my opinion. Don't go expecting Boston or NY marathon but you should go for a well run, mid-December race in a wonderful setting and fast as lighting course. See you next year!

Great little town, great race

It's all been said above, but this was a great course and a great environment. Hotel overlooked the start, race temps were in the low 30's to start, and there was no wind and a flat course. Would love to come back to Rehoboth in the summer, but it's a charming little town.

Great mix of road, trail, and countryside

Really loved this race - a pleasant surprise. We drove out from DC on a whim, having done Marine Corps six weeks before. Despite a very limited "expo" (really, let's just call it a packet pick-up) everything else was well run. The course starts in town, with a quick out-and-back along the shore - great for a winter sunrise. By the 10K point you hit a rail trail (mercifully dry)... and the field really thins out. This is a fast race - no weaving in and out like MCM. By 9 miles in, the course takes an odd zigzag through a new McMansion development, but then heads to and through Lewes. The worst part of the course was just past the Cape May Ferry terminal - a dull stretch covering miles 12-18, twisting through a desolate state park. From there it was back through Lewes, backtracking over the rail trail and into town. Pros: - Great support. Lots of water/Gatorade, plus a few GU stations. - Minimal crowding. - A runner's race. Plenty of first-timers, but mostly seasoned, relaxed folks. - Great, post-race, heated tent. Loved the pancakes. Loved the microbrew more. Cons: - That Cape Henlopen State Park loop. Argh. More twists and turns than tangled Christmas lights. - No Mile 24 marker. Sounds petty, but everything else was marked. I thought I'd really hit the wall- only to find myself at mile 25. I heard lots of complaints about this. I'd do it again- and a great late fall/early winter race for the Northeast crowd.

Neat town, fast course

Really surprised at the mild weather (low 40's at finish, no wind) for December. Town has a lot of character. I highly recommend the Dogfish Head pub across from the host running store (choose it over the pasta dinner). Post-race was great, including lots of awesome 16-Mile beer. Fast course; I set a PR. Great experience.

Great, Small Marathon with a Scenic Course

I thoroughly enjoyed this marathon for a number of reasons. First of all I walked out of my hotel at 6:50 a.m. for the 7 a.m. start. You can't do that at the mega marathons. Secondly the sunrise was magnificent with an array of beautiful colors over the Atlantic Ocean. I told runners throughout the day that today's weather was perfect. Cold, almost no wind, and partly sunny. I met some grizzled veteran runners during the race: Hal who was running marathon #65 and has 19 straight Boston Marathons (he ran this years' Boston with a cast on his arm after falling on black ice, training for Boston). Also I met Keith (AKA Pink Tutu Runner) who has run over 100 marathons and ultra marathons. Plus I met newer marathoners who were working hard to finish their 3rd marathon ever. My conclusion: You meet a lot of wonderful people at races. I cannot say enough good things about the staff who put on this race. The after party in the big tent next to the finish lasted for hours afterward and never ran out of food or beverages. The Marathon Maniacs and 50 States groups were well represented at this race. Thank you to all who put on such a great race, and to those who participated as well. I highly recommend this race!!!

A Gem: Laid-back style with runner-friendly perks!

Previous comments cover many positive aspects. Word will quickly spread about how fantastic it is. I just wanted to add that this is a great one for marathoners who want to meet up with other marathoners BEFORE (at the pasta dinner), DURING the event (small-size cap makes it easy to find each other at the beautiful sunrise start, and easy to hang/run with one another during) and AFTER (at the fabulous, well-stocked, finish-line party). -Could easily be a PR course, plus much is off vehicle-traveled roadways. -Aid stations were stocked and set-up exactly where advertised, with enthusiastic volunteers. -Bonus door-prize gift baskets for various feats (not just for the fastest folks).

This race is well done. Everything from packet pick-up to the finish line is first class. The course has just enough variation to keep your mind off of the miles run. The food and beer in this town are also first-class.

Love it!

I'm sure that this race will grow over time. Pros: 1) Course is mostly flat, scenic, very quiet, and cold - perfect! 2) Beach sunset so beautiful just prior the gun time 3) Volunteers where wonderful 4) Nice after-race party and food 5) Nice place to stay prior to and after the event (family-friendly event) Cons: 1) Not a lot of spectators (don't mind personally, but if you need cheering, this is not the best place for you) 2) Pre-race dinner was problematic: too many people for the small restaurant and I have to wait 15 minutes (but the food was great) 3) Expensive: $120 - much more than some bigger events 4) Short sleeve T-shirt in December - not the better idea Running thought a lot of scenic tracks next to the culture field, parks, and woods is simply great.

Flat, Fast, Scenic Course

Great race - starting with the ocean sunrise at the start, to the FLAT course that follows nice trails, quiet roads, and scenic state parks. Well organized with great food tent at the end. The only negative is that they limit the spectators on most of the course, so there's not a lot of cheering. Highly recommend this race!

WOW!

This is a runner's race. Small field (600), beautiful and flat course, sunrise start, and an old-school finish line. This is a great course for a PR, or if you're looking to squeak in one more race before the winter. The $120 fee was a little steep for a small race, but definitely one of the most beautiful on the East Coast.

Worth the trip!!! Great small marathon.

For starters: The packet pick-up was quick, easy and conveniently located in the main part of town. If you're staying overnight, consider the Boardwalk Plaza Hotel, which is a short, 3-minute walk along the boardwalk to the start line. A slightly longer walk from the finish line, but that's when you'll need it. The marathon course was picturesque, well marked and supported by friendly volunteers. The section on the breakwater trail was very pleasant and the footing was fine. No traffic issues at any point along the course. Water stops were as posted on the website. The small "hills" in Cape Henlopen State Park were equivalent to paved sand dunes, although I suppose that's all relative to where you live. I don't rate marathons based on the post-race food, because I never have much of an appetite after running 26.2 miles, but if that's important to you, the post-race party had plenty of food and beer. I didn't partake, so I can't comment on the quality. I'd prefer to have light fare with fruit or crackers, but that's just my preference. I was a bit hesitant to register for this race because of the distance from my home - and to be honest, it was a bit more expensive than most small marathons (as this was not a targeted race for me), but it was definitely worth the trip. In summary, if you're looking for a late fall/early winter marathon, consider Rehoboth Beach.

Day at the Beach

WOW! What a fantastic course! Rehoboth Beach is pancake-flat, extremely fast, and fun. Starting with a tremendous visual - the color guard marching up to the town's gazebo for the singing of the national anthem as we all faced the colors of the mornings first light over the Atlantic - to the sunrise as we ran the shoreline, to the magnificent parks we ran all the way up to Lewes, it was perfect. The cool weather made it a much easier to run that course than it would be in the warmer months. The trail sections were a good rest for my legs and made a fast finish possible. And as far as post-race parties go, Rehoboth Beach cannot be beat! Talk about carb/protein replacement! The pulled pork sandwiches were so good that I never made it over to try the pancakes and sausages or the local brews. The excellent post-race massage by Elisza and standing a few minutes in the oversized ice bath they had waiting for us just down the street made my legs feel so good that we took a hike on the AT on our drive back to Cleveland the next morning. The Atlantic Sands Hotel was a good and inexpensive place to stay on the beach, and a 100 yards from the start with a late checkout so we could party. And the pre-race seafood was outstanding at The Big Fish.

I loved this marathon!

I cannot possibly say enough good things about this race - Mary Beth, and people of Rehoboth Beach, you pulled off an incredible event. Course: beautiful - how can you go wrong when you start with a gorgeous sunrise over the Atlantic? Just about every part of the course offered an interesting view. I loved the residential neighborhoods with Victorian houses, and the trail portions of the race - I was never bored. And the course is reasonably flat. The temps start cold, but I believe all of the conditions for a PR are here. I was very pleased with my race time, and even managed to pick up an age-group award. Organization: great job; no complaints whatsoever. I ran NYC 5 weeks earlier, and the easier logistics of this race made me vow I will never run another big-city marathon again! I was able to walk to the start line from my hotel just 20 minutes before race start, so I did not have to stand around freezing (like the miserable 4.5 hours in NYC pre-race). The finish was right in front of my hotel, so I went directly into a hot shower within about 10 minutes of completing the race. That alone made this the perfect marathon! Spectators: just enough - I was not overwhelmed by people telling me how good I looked (when I knew I did not!) and everyone was so cheerful. Overall this was a wonderful race experience, and I so enjoyed visiting beautiful Rehoboth Beach. Knocks Delaware off of my 50-states list, and RB is one of my favorite marathons. I would highly recommend this terrific race!

excellent mid-size race

I didn't know what to expect from a December marathon in Delaware, but it was fantastic. Event organization was excellent, and the race staging area was beautiful. The sunrise looking out over the ocean was amazing. It was a flat and fast course, with good water stops, lots of volunteers, and good traffic control. Plus, there were about 6 or so miles on a nice, packed trail that was easy on the legs. Unfortunately I didn't get to stick around afterward for the post-race party, but everything was top-notch. There weren't a whole lot of spectators, but that is fine with me. After running NYC last month, the size of this race was ideal. It was big enough to have a few people around you, but I never felt like I was having to watch my feet after the first half mile. Overall, a very well done race.

Great Delaware Marathon

It was a very cold day. That is the only "negative" I have. Beautiful sunrise over the ocean at the start. The course was interesting and took you through a variety of typical mid-East Coast settings (salt marsh, goose-filled fields, ocean views, woods). Food and beer afterward were awesome. All hot and energy replacing. The town was very welcoming to the runners all weekend. I recommend the Atlantic Sands Hotel if staying in town. A suggestion for improvement would be to have a bag drop at the finish. Would have been nice to have warmer clothes to put on for the walk back to the hotel. Good job, RBRC!

Not bad

I will admit that today was not my day, and at the end of the marathon, I was not kind. I'm kind of a loner when I do marathons and actually don't want to be bothered too much (I get enough of that in my day job). One complaint about the course, which was beautiful for the most part: better indications of which way to turn would be nice. What was great: the food was excellent, warm, and fresh - even when I finished. Kudos. Baton Rouge is the only event I've been at that had better food (it's hard to top alligator jambalaya). Two other complaints: Don't allow t-shirt trades and mark your expo entrance better. Not many spectators, but that didn't bother me. Pretty marathon with wonderful paths in Henlopen and near Rehoboth. Good job for the most part!

Wonderful Course!!!!

Loved this marathon and I definitely plan to do it again. It was easy travel, with lots of options for accommodations, and seamless packet pick-up. The race course was definitely the best part of the experience 0 as it should be: Interesting scenery, mostly flat, lots of friendly runners and spectators. There weren't a lot of spectators - I guess the chilly weather had a lot to do with that - but the ones that were there were super supportive of everyone who passed. This one is definitely on my "must do again" list.

How can you not love your first?

My first marathon!!! Other than the website (which is why I gave the "organization" 4 points), this race is a total setup for success for runners. Of special note were the volunteers at every turn. They were marvelous handlers, giving "coming attractions" of the next section of the course. Very helpful! I have a feeling I'll be comparing all others to Rehoboth for a long time. :-) The previous commenter described the course and party to a T, so I won't waste words saying the same thing. Definitely a must-do along the East Coast.

Starts with an Awesome Sunrise!

Rehoboth Beach Running Company was easy to find once you got into town. They had tents set up in the parking lot for check-in, and heated tents - as the evenings and mornings were cool. There really wasn't an expo for this event, but they did have some running stuff for sale in the store, and out in front. The marathon started 5 blocks east of the store, right up against the beach boardwalk. The boardwalk was being rebuilt, so only part of it was accessible. Still, we were right at the beach looking over the Atlantic Ocean. About 15 minutes before the start of the race, we witnessed a spectacular sunrise. The start line operation was well organized and orderly. The runners were lined up heading west. The course did a loop through town, and then went north along the shore of the ocean to a day use part of Cape Henlopen State Park. Coming out of the park, we soon entered a crushed gravel trail that continued for several miles. Coming off the trail, we passed some pretty impressive and magnificent homes, then ended up on a country road heading north. At Savannah Street we crossed a bridge over a canal and headed toward the town of Lewes. Turning southeast (I think) the ferry docks (to NJ) were on the left. After a couple of miles, we entered Cape Henlopen State Park- this time from the north. The course meandered through the paved and slightly hilly trails of the park for about four miles. There were relic cannons left over from the war that served as a reminder of an earlier use of the area. At one point closer to the exit, there was an elevated control tower-like facility from where they were directing shipping traffic on the ocean. After coming out of the state park, we back-tracked, with a couple of variations, to the gravel path. Exiting the gravel path, we were nearing the finish line. A different routing from there took us back into town, and to the finish line in front of the Rehoboth Beach Running Company. The post-race party was spectacular: Breakfast included pancakes and apple slices; and lunch featured taco salad, mini-burgers, sloppy joe BBQs, macaroni, baked beans, and more. There was an ample supply of beer and water too. I did not find any soft drinks or PowerAde drinks. And there was a Starbucks Coffee Shop right across the street (for those of us holding out until after the race for our morning brew). The aid station volunteers were awesome as usual. Gels were available at one of the second half aid stations. Weather was great. It was probably in the mid 40s overnight, near 50 at the start, and 59 about noontime. The sun was obscured by clouds much of the morning so it never got too warm. Still, it was great weather for running a marathon. This was a great marathon event, at a time of year when weather could be highly variable. Organization was great, people were friendly, the course was mostly flat, except for the hills in the state park, and the post-race event was among the best - even without the beer. The course was not all along the beach - as the Seashore Marathon name might suggest - but it was still a great course and a worthwhile marathon in a state that does not have an abundance of marathon races to choose from.
