Great course

A wonderful experience. Course is mostly flat with only two areas that are slightly uphill. Only negative which is expected is that opportunities for portapotty usage on the course was difficult due to only one being available at the various spots. With the number of participants and being a small race, this makes sense logistically. Organizers and volunteers are great and it's easy for my family who were spectating to drive along to different spots to cheer!

Fabulous small marathon

Completed the 2023 LWTM. Was my 8th marathon and first Lake Wobegon. It instantly became my favorite. Wonderful quiet and scenic course, not at all crowded, and very well organized. I got PR and BQ. Can't recommend this marathon enough.

Outstanding event put on by runners for runners

Extremely well organized. Put on by a local running club, The St. Cloud River Runners Small town marathon run on a paved trail, an old railroad bed, flat and fast. Great food at the finish and they have plenty, even for the later finishers.

Fast, flat course, not crowded, well organized!

So much to love about this event: great course (and certified), nice climate, 7am start time, very well organized (with shuttle busses), not crowded, waiting *indoors* before the race starts (thanks Holdingford High School!), lots of fun people, convenient and affordable lodging/hotels in the area. I've run Grandma's Marathon in Duluth a few times, and found that Lake Wobegon Marathon is much more enjoyable - looking forward to running it again next year!!

Beautiful, well run race!

The Lake Wobegone Trail Marathon is a top notch event. As a Fifty Stater, I'm very glad it served as my Minnesota Marathon. I had originally planned to run the Brookings Marathon, but it was canceled because of severe weather that had gone through that area earlier in the week. The race director for Lake Wobegone opened the race up to several of us that had planned to run Brookings. He did so without any convincing. I'm very appreciative of that having traveled to the region to run a marathon. Picking up the packet/bib was super easy. Being dropped off for the buses that took us to the start line was easy. Once there we were greeted as we got off the bus by the town mayor! How cool is that? We gathered in a local high school with plenty of restrooms, room to stretch and get ready, and water as we waited for the start of the race. The course is a point to point on the Lake Wobegon Trail. It is a paved rail trail that goes through gorgeous rural areas with beautiful farms, lakes, small cities, and forests all around. It was a picture perfect day. The course is flat. There weren't a ton of spectators on the course, but enough to keep you motivated especially as we ran through some of the small towns. They were all super nice and very encouraging. The finish line was well attended and had a great assortment of food. I love smaller races like this. So, it was perfect in my book. I left town before picking up my age group award as I didn't expect to place. The race director sent it to me for free. He has been easy to communicate with along the way. I'm deeply appreciative to him and all of those who put on a great race. Thank you all! Run Lake Wobegone if you are looking for a great smaller race with top notch logistics along a stunningly beautiful course.

Uniquely Minnesotan

Well done race in all aspects. Pre-race communications were excellent. A good value to the runners. Lovely course on a retired railroad bed. Mostly flat and tree lined in many sections. Wear sunscreen! If it's hot, consider carrying extra fluids. Pasta dinner Friday night was well done and plentiful. Signs along the trail gave advice reminiscent of Garrison Keillor. Race added signs with encouraging thoughts and humor. Numerous locations where spectators could reach the trail. Runs through a covered bridge early in the race.

Couldn't ask for much more.

This was my first time running this marathon and 4th overall. The organization and attention to details were spot on. The couse is very pretty and flat (only one minor rise at 9ish). Weather started around 50 with and got up in the 70s. The ice chips handed out at 21 were crucial. The pasta dinner and post race food were both great. Great race!

Absolutely Fantastic Race all-around!

This race experience was wonderful. Shortly after registering, I received a welcome email from the race director (!!!) and that was just the start of how awesome this race was. Great course, plenty of motivating, well-stocked aid stations, helpful volunteers. This was a great experience for me and I will be back!!

Exceeded Expectations

I heard nothing but positive comments about the Lake Wobegon Trail Marathon, and it still exceeded my expectations. I thought I would miss the 'big race' feel, but there was nothing missing in this race. It was well organized, with great volunteers, great spectators, and a great course!

Great choice for my first marathon!

This was my first marathon and was highly recommended by a friend. I have to say it was a wonderful event, well organized, beautiful trail and scenery, enthusiastic spectators and over all TOP NOTCH. Everyone was friendly and had a home town feel, not huge but country nice. I highly recommend this marathon. Oh yes, the medal is beautiful and represents the trail.

Charmer of a rural race: Americana at its finest.

Nowhere else have I seen 5 deer leap past me, ran to the tune of a roosters crow or the mooing of the local cows. I loved the scenic bus ride to the start and the athletes welcome by the volunteers. Start holding area is indoors at the local school so the unpredictable spring weather doesn't chill you prerace. Motivational signs were a plus since the fans are mostly the 4 legged kind. The 'trail' is asphalt bike trail, smooth and flat! Medal and shirt artwork are my favorite thus far! Finish has soda pop (DrPepper never tasted better), pizza & cookies. The pacers were top notch and the race director very accommodating. Lots of local top notch racers. A memorable race!

Small town marathon done right!

If you want a laid back, easy marathon this is the one! When I say easy I mean packet pick up was a breeze, bag drop took seconds for drop off and pick up, no standing in long lines for bus ride to start. Super organized, well run event. Kudos to the race director. Paved trail was well maintained and flat! Great PR course. I was surprised at how many spectators there were considering it was such a small event. Highly recommend!

Fast, flat and beautiful.

I ran this marathon in 2013, 2014, and 2015. I qualified for Boston all three times. My only suggestion for improvement in this marathon is to have a timing mat at the start and not just the finish. For those looking to BQ or PR seconds matter so don't dally in the port-a-potty.

This Race is Above Average!

I have to tell you: this is a fabulous small race! I had a really rough week leading up to race day. My spirit was low, and my body felt weak. On race day, I made my way to the shuttle, feeling a little worried ... we congregated in the high school gym near the starting line. I wandered among my fellow marathoners, and the happy atmosphere soon helped me relax. It was a cold morning, but the sunshine was brilliant. The run started, and I began my journey through the wetlands of Minnesota. The course is simply peaceful. I ran though agricultural areas, small towns, wetlands, past lakes, through a covered bridge ... all in gentle sunshine and perfect temperatures. Volunteers cheerfully provided support and guidance, fellow runners were happy and helpful, and mostly, my soul got to rejuvenate. I finished that 26.2 miles feeling better than when I started. And that is all one can ever desire from any journey. Kudos to the organizers for choosing to have such a well run race in such a wonderful place.

One of my favorite races

I have run over 25 marathons & this is one of my favorite races. The course was very flat & fast, & weather was perfect. I felt it was the perfect size race, as I always had someone within vision ahead. I would definitely recommend this race if looking for a PR!

Great Small town marathon

For a small town marathon the race directors do a great job of making everyone feel like they are all big time winners. The course is fast and flat with absolutely beautiful scenery all along the paved trail. The cheering crowds were surprisingly large for a small marathon and the massages, awards, and food at the end rival some bigger marathons I have run. If you want a nice getaway and great time in speed and the experience I would recommend this marathon.

A quiet day near Lake Wobegon

What a lovely morning. The course traverses woods, farms, lakes and wetlands, with spring erupting everywhere. At one point the frogs on either side of the trail gave the loudest welcome on the entire course. The occasional crossroads provided access for clusters of friendly, enthusiastic fans. The welcome finish, in St. Joseph, was charming and well organized. Kudos to the organizers.

I liked everything about this race!

This is a really great race. The trail itself is easy to run on and it's very scenic running thru several rural MN towns and I especially enjoyed running over the bridges. The volunteers were fantastic and the post-race pizza was delicious. Even the race bag was much nicer than I've ever received. I'll definitely be back!

This race is the perfect size; small but not tiny. Beautiful fast course through countryside and small towns; minimal road crossings. It's also a great value, especially for the high quality bag, and great looking shirts & medals.

This course is definitely ran by runners for runne

I have run the course 4 times: 1 time as a pacer and 3 times as a competitor. The race director has made sure runners, spectators, and volunteers have had an enjoyable experience. Her attention to details is spot on and over and above what I would expect. The price is very reasonable and the swag received is of high quality. The course itself is flat, fast, and scenic. If you are looking for a BQ-this is your race!

They treat every runner like a road star!

I loved running this course. I was cheered at every location open to the public, there was always enough water/sport drink, and all traffic was halted for the runners. The volunteers were terrific, the pacers were on time, the details were all perfectly managed, and at the finish they treated me with TLC like you wouldn't believe. What a race!

A marathon experience you don't want to miss!

This was my first time running the Lake Wobegon Trail Marathon and it was FANTASTIC! It was obvious that a lot of hard work went into putting this race on. It was very well coordinated, and the volunteers were kind, caringabsolutely wonderful. At the finish line, I was treated as if everyone knew me: cheers, applause, a lot of personal attention-and I had never met any of them. The scenery along the course was absolutely beautiful-nature at its best. An unbelievable 5-star experience in Small-town, Minnesota. Hats-off to the St. Cloud River Runners! This one should be on every marathoner's 'must-run' list.

A great place to run!

Would I run this race again, yes. It's a small race, if you are looking for large amount of spectators this isn't your race. But what few spectators there are along the course, well they have allot of heart. My only wish that I have for the run is I would like to see it held during the fall. The colors there must be something to see. At this time of the year the trees are just starting to bud. It would be a more scenic run. This year fishing season opened on the same day of the run. So if you are a fisherman this make the run another plus for you. This year packet pick up and the pre-run dinner where held at a local college in St Joseph, which is not far from the finish line. Once again this is a small race. Don't expect to find things here that you would at a larger race. But if you want a flat course and great people this is great run. Hope to return with my son and his family. We stayed in St Cloud which is not far from St Joseph

Although this race isn't filled with spectators, it is a really fun race because the organizers are friendly, the start isnt very crowded, there are ample water station, easy spectator access, and a flat, beautiful run through rural Minnesota.

My favorite small race

What a great event. While I wasn't happy with my race time (thanks to the headwinds at the end of my race - the last 4 miles killed me!), I really enjoyed my entire race experience. Everything was so well organized, communicated, and coordinated, and as a participant focused on a personal goal, it's nice to not have to worry about the details. The volunteers are the poster children for Minnesota Nice. Seriously, where did you find these people? From the Mayor of Holdingford welcoming us to his town, to the smiley faces at packet pick-up, to the helpful and supportive people staffing the water stops and manning the traffic stops, and then the welcome arm-around-the-shoulder I received at the finish line - these people made my day. I wasn't happy about my race time, but they made me happy about the whole experience. Wow. I really appreciated the finish line food pizza and my favorite beverage, Cherry Coke? That was a pleasant surprise! And the swag. The 'drop' bags were another pleasant surprise - I guess plastic is for sandwiches? Loved the technical shirt, and most of all, this year's medal. I'm an orchid enthusiast and member of the Minnesota Orchid Society, and when I saw the medal adorned with five lady-slipper orchids, well, it was worth it, no matter what time I crossed the line. I know the medals change every year, but this was a happy coincidence. I even had a turkey and 3 deer cross the trail in front of me! Kudos to Sharon Hobbs and a heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped make this event happen. It was a beautiful day on a beautiful course, all made possible by beautiful people. Someday I will do this race again (I usually don't like to repeat races), and in the mean time, I will recommend it to every runner I know.

A Marathon Every runner should do!!

This race is the complete package! Very well organized from the packet pickup, pasta-feed, bus ride to the start, indoor pre-race area with plenty of bathrooms and fun music to jazz you up! Beautiful, flat course with water, toilets, support spaced just right, and the finish is filled with excitement, support, food, and easy access to see your family or people waiting for you! Forever near and dear to my heart!!!

The circle is complete..my marathon career began with LWTM and ends with LWTM. This was my only full marathon after a tendon transfer surgery in 2011 in my foot. It was uncertain if I would be able to run another full marathon. I did it...barely. Now wisdom says to let it go. They say you always have a soft spot for your first marathon, but it's not just because it was the first...it's because of the energy, volunteers, spectators, pacers, runners, camaraderie during the race, and beauty of the LWTM trail. Not to mention it's flat, fast, and a great Boston qualifier! 'Four towns, two feet, one day' I like to say about this race, it makes you seem like you're amazing! :) I will ALWAYS recommend this race to anyone, especially as a first time marathon. I won't be on the course anymore as a runner, but I will definitely be there as a volunteer in the years to come! See you out there!!!

Fast, flat, fun, great spring tune-up or BQ

Very well organized and executed race. The volunteers were very helpful and gracious, I couldn't thank them enough at each aid station or the finish. This race is very small and intimate, everyone either knows each other or wants to get to know you. Yes, it's a flat paved 10 ft. wide trail, but with only 325-350 runners I never felt boxed in or crowded. The aid stations are not as frequent as some big marathons, usually 2-2.5 miles apart, so with that in mind bring a hydration belt if you need it. But they were great aid stations with all the essentials and then some, including salty snacks like pretzels and chips, my favorite! The finish line area was fantastic, tons of great food and drink, lots of options depending on how well you feel after a race. Everything from pizza to bagels, water to Gatorade to Cokes and Sprites. And chocolate milk, always a bonus. Great volunteers at the finish too, took the time to help, make sure you were doing ok, then gave you directions to the food, massage tent or finishers shirts. PS - this review would have been great even if I didn't PR by 12 minutes!

This race is put on by the running club I belong to. They are very friendly and do a fabulous job organizing and executing this race. The volunteers are outstanding, friendly and energetic. The course is picturesque and flat. Very good place to PR. Not your 'big city' marathon and I liked that compared to my previous marathon which fit that category.

A must for all Marathoners

Lake Wobegon Trail Marathon is a must for any marathoner because it's flat, fast and cool because of the time of year. This is also one of the best organized marathons I have ever ran. It's small in size and has as many volunteers as any other marathon. They really roll out all the stops for this one. The finishing medal is big and beautiful. If you want to qualify for Boston, this is the one to do. I have ran it 3 times and you can bet I'll take one of the spots again next year. Great job to all involved in organizing this event.

This race is about the runners, not about profit.

I've biked the Wobegon Trail many times and thought, 'this is so boring, I don't know how anyone could ever run a marathon on it', but surprisingly I actually enjoyed the serenity of the trail. This was my first Marathon, so I can't compare it to any others. As a FIRST time Marathoner, you are given a ROSE when you finish. :-) This year there were just over 300 finishers, and 150 volunteers, as a 5+ hour finisher, I saw more volunteers than runners, and almost no spectators. The 'bike Support' kept me company off and on and even brought me water. Most of the volunteers are local runners, who take great care of you. The race director is very organized and keeps the cost low. She doesn't take a pay check from the race and 'breaks even' on race income/expenses. This race is organized and put on by runners and is for the runner, not for profit. There are amazing cookies at the finish, so make sure you find them! Great swag: nice long sleeve shirt, mesh bag, high quality medal (next year 2014, the medal will have Lady Slippers on it, its BEAUTIFUL and I might do the race again, to have one of my own).

Best place to PR!!

For those who enjoy a small but well-organized race, this is definately the one for you! Low entry fee but runners are treated amazingly well! From the gym and short bathroom lines at the start, to the scenic flat course, with wonderful volunteers at all the water stops! If you need the motivation of lots of spectators, this is not the race for you. But if you want a flat, fast, beautiful course, this needs to be on your must-do list!!

Flat and beautiful!!!

Despite the wind gusts I loved this course! It is a tar trail except for the first mile. The rural setting is peaceful and I especially enjoyed the cute baby lambs. If you need thousands of runners and spectators to keep you motivated this is not the course for you. I qualified for Boston and hope to go back to Lake Wobegone where all the runners are good looking and faster than average!

Fantastic course & organization

This is a beautiful and peaceful run for those who appreciate a chance to test themselves on a fast course where you are able to run your on pace or push yourself against some very serious MN club competition. The club organization of the race was superb with all the most important elements covered - i.e. accurate mile markers, access to large gym immediately before start, bag drop, plenty of food and hot fluid at finish. Fans at the many trail intersections were wonderful with signs, cowbells, and loud/knowledgable shouts for every competitor. The low entry fee is a tremendous bargain for quality of volunteers/stations, beautiful medal and soft tech t-shirt for finishers only.

VERY well organized small marathon

This is a small marathon (308 finishers in 2013) that is organized better than most large marathons. Other than the cold & windy weather, I have only 100% positive things to say about the race. Best features: pre-race communications, friendly pasta dinner and great medal.

Fast, extremely well-organized race!

Let me start off with my only ridiculously small complaint-no cream and sugar was available for my coffee at the start :) Other than that, WOW, what a great event! After running all big marathons (NY, Boston, Houston, etc) I was looking for a small, flat, PR/BQ marathon and this was it. Sharon Hobbs was very hands-on and was organized from start to finish. Because of the location of the race, spectators were few but those that were present were great. There were stretches during the race I did not see one other person, including another runner but I actually thought that was pretty cool. I came from Austin, TX and this was my first trip to Minnesota and it was worth it. I met some very friendly people and I did not mind when I crossed the finish line that they erroneously announced I was from Austin, 'Minnesota.' I did not even know it existed :) I hope this event stays small and outsiders like myself don't learn about this hidden gem. I hope to be back soon!

A great run through a beautiful rural landscape!

This was my first marathon and couldn't have gone better. Very well organized and a great group of runners, through a real covered bridge, over creeks, pastures, through forests. the little marathon that rocks!

This is a great little marathon. If you love to run this is the race for you. The race director is very hands on and visible from start to finish and cares about all 26.2 miles of this gem. The weather is usually on the cool side and with a favorable breeze you may just run a PB. The course has very little elevation change and one left turn, it is very simple, you lace up your shoes and run. The spectators are few but enthusiastic. The race stuff and shirts are great also, I have actually used the bags that I received from this race for years. The post race food is tasty and plentiful and any race that plays Iron Maiden at the finish line kicks butt in my book.

26.2 miles of Heavenly Running!

Whether this is my first or 999th marathon, I come from a world where one creates his/her own reality and dreams. There could be a million screaming fans along the course or no one at all and I would still be in heaven running this course. If you only see a flat course, that is what you will remember and believe! If you truely experience this course, you will experience a run in Heaven! With every course, you can find a devil along the way and allow it to destroy and crush your spirit as well as your physical being. With The Lake Wobegon Trail, you have angels guiding you through trees, fields, towns, lakes, covered bridges, wonderful friendly aid stations, fantastic views, over streams, past several Lake Wobegon characters cheering you on, cows grazing in the pasture, wildlife waking up, pure country air, and a fantastic finish line! All you have to do is remain sane if you are in pain and allow the course to work it's magic. Each time I run this course, I'm reminded why I run - not to burn off whatever, but to truely experience running in Heaven! I could run anywhere in the world but no way would I miss this run in and to Heaven!

Outstanding and well organized marathon

I have run this marathon every year since it's birth and it only gets better every year. The meticulous organization and professional attitudes of everyone involved is beyond words. Among the 10 marathons I run each year, I look forward to this one the most. The spectators are charged up and full of energy and the refreshments at the end are awesome (love the pizza and fresh baked cookies).

Done all fiveit is wonderful

The 2012 race is the fifth time I have done Lake Wobegon, and it continues to be my favorite marathon experience. The course is beautiful, winding through the scenic small towns and the pretty central Minnesota countryside. It is a very flat course, and was my first marathon. The race is extremely well organized by a local running club who knows what runners like and need. They gave us cool medals, long-sleeved tech shirts, a great garment bag with the race logo, and great pizza, cookies and treats when you finish. Spectators get 5 stars, not because there were a lot of them, but because the roving band of them that would appear every couple of miles at trail intersections were wildly enthusiastic and supportive. It was like a traveling party! Amazing, friendly volunteers, too. They were great at the aid stations and so helpful at the finish. This is a top notch small town marathon,

Great place and time of year

Maybe because of its size or its location . This is a GREAT small marathon. They provide 'something that the '30,000 of my close friends marathons don't', personal attention.... I have completed over 65 marathons (Including 5 of these) and 'The Lake Woebegone Trail' Marathon is one of my favorites. The only thing missing is Garrison Keillor singing the National Anthem.....

What stands out about this race is how low stress it is. No stress about getting to the start line - I could wait in the gym (200ft away) until right before the gun fired. No stress about porta-potty lines - the school bathrooms were open all morning. (There were still porta-potties outside for that last minute emergency.) No stressing about the crowd of runners to fight through to get a spot near the front - with only a couple hundred runners, everyone was at the front! No stress about the water stops - there was plenty of water/treats and the volunteers knew how to hand-off a full cup of water. (Most of them were runners.) There are plenty of stops along the way too. I can't say enough about how relaxed this race is. I could really focus on preparing for the race and not on all the other pre-race stuff that can mess with my confidence. P.S. The course is super-fast and even though it's a small race, they still have pacers.

wonderful, low-key spring marathon

I'm registering for my 6th consecutive LWTM. I've done it every year and can't get enough of this well run, scenic race. Although a small race, the organization is excellent and support is A-1. If you are looking for an alternative to a big city event, look no further this one is 'Minnesota nice'.

Very scenic course.

This marathon is one of those rare gems. I have run it every year of its existence and I hope to continue the trend for a long time. In fact I enjoy this race so much I continue to come from California just for this marathon. The director does a fabulous job making sure every single detail is well thought out. Her (many) volunteers are well informed of their responsibilities. They are the friendly, encouraging, and even entertaining. This course brings out the best of Minnesota in every way. The country side, churches, farms, animals, wildlife, friendly folks along the way, make this race every marathon enthusiast should do. You will not be the least bit disappointed and will want to add this one to your 'must do' list every year.

Excellent course in a rural environment

I have run in this race each of the 5 years it has been run. I am an older runner and use a 'walk-run' method to complete the course. The race is well run. An excellent way to spend a Saturday in May in Central Minnesota.

Good course, but not doing it again

If you are looking for a very flat and boring run, you've found it! There is one turn on this course (around mile 11) and then it's a dead straight away. Ugh! If it was lined with spectators, that may have helped, but it was very boring, which made it difficult for me. However, if you are looking for a BQ, this may be a race for you. The course is flat! I'd say give it a go if you are thinking about it; however, I gave it a go and won't do it again. I feed off of spectator energy and the every-so-often change up. It was also very hot running toward the finish line, nothing but the bright beating sun. The spectators were great, when I saw them. I was fortunate to have my boyfriend at every patch of spectators (which was every few miles, I suppose one benefit of having a straight away). Overall, well organized and very flat course, but if you need spectator energy, I'd go for another marathon.

Outstanding Race in All Regards

Nothing but good things to say about this race. If you are looking for a fun small town marathon in a beautiful rural location this is it. Started with a great pasta party the night before. Race was perfectly organized and all the details taken care of. Water stops are a little more spaced than some races so be aware - I carried water bottles. Also would be a good course for headphones as there are times when you are alone out there but it is a perfect course and no turns so can't get lost and great support along the way from the few spectators (truthfully there weren't many as this is run in a really rural area). Highly recommend to all. It is mostly flat and scenic rural farmland and woods. Race organizers were super friendly and helpful.

Wonderful Small Marathon

This is a fantastic marathon. A 350 runner cap, and an event focused on the runners, not the event. Pre-race communication was excellent without being overwhelming. Every detail was thought through and successful for the runners; the pasta dinner, the bag, the course, the on-course support, the shirt and the finish area. Everything was exactly as advertised, if not better. I was lucky enough to win one of the mugs, but do agree with a previous poster that it would be awesome to be able to buy items with the beautiful logo. Great job by the organizer and volunteers - a race I've already recommended to all my running friends.

Beautiful course, great value

This was my second LWTM and it was just as wonderful. The course is flat and scenic and easy to get to. The registration fee of $45 is such a treat! Race organizers, volunteers, and spectators are great. My husband was able to meet me 10 times along the course, so it's an easy race for spectators to navigate. The shirt is great and the finish line food is the best I've seen at a marathon. My only suggestions are to add more porta-potties along the way and more water stops if temps are going to rise above 60. This is the only marathon I've repeated, and I'll definitely plan to sign up again in the future.

Very Nic e Race

This race is a great bargain. For the $45 entry fee you get: Tech fabric shirt with a great design Very nice medal with respect to size and design Nice carry bag Great food at the finish Flat course Friendly fans Great logistics and organization The only thing to note is that on a warm day (like it was in 2012 by the end) some of the water stops are further apart than ideal. So, when you get to a water stop, have a double or triple shot to carry you to the next stop.

Another Fantastic Job!

This is my second running of the Lake Wobegon Trail marathon, and once again, they did not disappoint. The organization is fantastic, from logistics, volunteers, to gear at the end, no stone is left unturned. What other race can you wait inside until 5 minutes before the start, walk out to beautiful conditions, and then run a flat, fast course for a PR? Not many, Sharon and her crew hit another homerun!!!

Best small town marathon in America

The 2012 race is the second time I have done Lake Wobegon, and it continues to be my favorite marathon experience. The course is beautiful, winding through the scenic Garrison Keillor-esque small towns and the pretty central Minnesota countryside. It is also a very flat course, good for anyone seeking a PR or a first-time marathoner, I would think. The race is extremely well organized by a local running club who knows what runners like and need. They gave us cool medals, long-sleeved tech shirts, and a great garment bag with the race logo, and the entry fee was only $45. I've done marathons that cost twice as much and didn't have stuff this nice. This is a top notch small town marathon, and to date it is the only marathon I have run twice. Looking forward to making it a third time next year!

wow

this was finally my 50th state after starting in 1977. It was a perfect choice to finish. The pasta dinner was incredible. The gym at the beginning provided warmth prior to the start. The community was greatly involved, as the volunteers were plentiful and loud. The course flat and fast. At the end, the drop bag was right there, the food plentiful, your name announced and a friendly, congenial atmosphere. my only disappointment was that I did not run fast enough to get one of the beautiful mug awards, and could not buy one. My congrats on a very well organized race.

All-around great event

I can't say enough about this awesome event. The course is flat and fast with scenic views. The organizers are efficient and well-organized. The volunteers are upbeat and energizing. The spectators are enthusiastic and encouraging. And the other runners are friendly and terrific company to talk to on your way to the finish line. The 'goodies' are very nice and everything just went so smoothly. You really feel like YOU are the focus of the event rather than just someone who is there. It was a tremendous experience. I would recommend to any one!

Great race, well organized, flat course

Course: Flat, all asphalt, very pretty course (lakes, farmland, fields). The LWTM is a very intimate marathon with only 300 runners or so. I met a ton of friendly runners and volunteers. The race direct also did an extraordinary job organizing everything, as well making everyone feel welcome. Overall, a fantastic race.

Fast, flat, beautiful, paved trail, plus ...

... the course is lovely & especially perfect if you don't require throngs of runners or spectators. Peaceful. Also easy for your own support folks to get to you at many places on the course. Great volunteers. Great swag (high quality athletic bag + long-sleeved tech tee in women's sizes). Very well-organized & executed. Loved it - I'll be back!

Organized, Friendly... What an experience!

A perfectly organized race! The course is beautiful and volunteers were so helpful. This my first marathon, I struggled at mile 16 but a volunteer noticed and biked with me for a half mile, offering a granola bar, and later another volunteer on bike at mile 20 offered much needed water. Love the pace groups I noticed ones for 3:20, 3:35, 3:45, 4:00, and 4:30. Maybe this is at every marathon, but it was very helpful to run with a group and not need to look at my watch. The finisher T-shirt and medal were highest quality, plus we received a LWTM drop bag. All for $45! I had thoughts of running Grandma's marathon next year, but Lake Wobegon Trail is cheaper and first class. Plus the course is fast & beautiful, and the food & individual care at the finish was fantastic. I plan to run this again next year. Hats off the organizers, the St. Cloud River Runners.

This is an ideal course for getting a PR or qualifying for the Boston Marathon. Absolutely no noticeable elevation on the course. A converted old railway, shaded along the way with surrounding farmland and nature. Don't expect many spectators or participants - this is a small race.

Great small race, great amenities. Gym bag, finisher shirt, free photos, great post race spread and a beautiful route with very enthusiastic volunteers and inspiring quotations posted on signs at each water stop. Good choice of hotels in St Cloud. Good pasta dinner too. Race director has great attention to detail and you really get a great experience for a small entry. Fantastic event.

Great value marathon. VERY enjoyable!

This is a great marathon and for a $40 registration fee ($35 early and $45 late), it is a truly fabulous 'value' marathon. I dont quite understand how they are able to make $40 per registrant go so far&a nice bag, a great shirt for finishers, an AMAZING medal, fantastic volunteers, pizza, other treats&this is a fantastic budget marathon that seems like you should really only get half of this. The organizer is fantastic and provides detailed notes and instructions (people had to know exactly what they were getting into&though, for some reason, I was still very amazed at it all) and it was very well organized. I have to say, it even seemed like more than 350 runners out on the course somehow they even made it so you get more out of each person out there :). Anyway, a great marathon and a very enjoyable course. I would have probably preferred water stops a little closer together, but the course is on a trail so this would be difficult and the organizer provides great detail on where the water stops are located BEFORE the event, so I was aware that I might want to bring a small water bottle, which I did, and it worked out perfectly! Great job with it!

Great Marathon-Great Volunteers-Great Food

This is a great marathon. It is a small group of runners but a very enthusiastic group. The volunteers are fantastic and the supporters are able to meet you every couple of miles. Great marathon for a PR

Well run & well organized. Large gym to stay in before the race. Race is run on a flat and fast course with only one turn on the trail. Totally enthusiastic support at water stops & nice food at the end. An announcer announced my number, name & where I was from, the RD put a medal around my neck and another volunteer handed me an envelop with my race shirt in it. Can't wait to do it again next year!

Fast, well supported, scenic, BQ, PR!

I had so much fun the first time, I had to come back to do it again. It is a fast, scenic course along the Lake Wobegon Trail, near St. Cloud Mn. The race support was excellent, beginning weeks before the race, during the race, and after. Lots of friendly volunteers; great post-marathon food; the finisher medals and shirts are really nice. There is no pre-race stress. Everything was so convenient. Just show up, run the race, and enjoy! They did a much better job, and made me feel more welcome than any 'big city' race. Do this one!

Small on size; Huge on class

Yes, it's small, and if the cattle jumped in cars and met you 5 times along the route like the spectators do, they might outnumber the spectators. But, this allows the race director and volunteers to focus on the participants, something they do exceptionally well. Pre-race communication was excellent. Excellent pasta (and much more) feed on Friday night. A limited number of pacers available (one of whom helped me to a 16 minute PR!). A great running surface. And when you cross the finish line, someone will be there to check on how you're feeling and give you something to start the re-hydration process. Sadly, we lost a runner at this year's race, but it was instructive to see how professionally and sympathetically the race director and her staff reacted to support the family and the running community. A true class act.

Great course, ideal for those seeking a PR or BQ. Time of year ideal to avoid summer heat. Typical lows in the 40's, highs in the 60's. 2011 was low 40's with light rain to start. Volunteers were all upbeat and helpful. Overall, a very well run event, and inexpensive. Check it out!!

Excellent race - highly recommended

If you are looking for a small, fast, well-organized marathon that is also scenic and easy to get to - look no further. St. Joseph is an easy 1hr drive outside Minneapolis. The course is very flat, asphalted rails-to-trail conversion (I believe). Beautiful views of farmland, rolling hills, woods and charming little towns. Spectators were sparse (which to me is quite ok), but very energetic and friendly. I can't say enough about the organization - everything was thought-through and went like a charm.

Delightful, beautiful, well-run, charming

What a fantastic race. Leading up to the race, the course website provided all of the necessary information in a quality format and the race coordinator was extremely effective in communicating. The small scale of the race allowed for morning-of bib pickup, which is a plus. It used chip timing, but the only sensor was at the end, so the chip times were effectively gun times. The race itself was wonderfully supported and the trail is quite beautiful in the spring, though it can be a little stark (in a stunning way) at times. Volunteers at small races are almost always better, and the LWTM is no exception. They had tremendous enthusiasm even despite the 40-45 degree temps and slight drizzle. The finish area is fantastic, and volunteers were incredibly sensitive to the needs of runners, especially medically. The food was also amazing - pizza (good stuff, too), bagels, homemade cookies, fruit, juices, hot chicken broth, yogurt, and more were all available right at the finish. Results posting was also prompt and efficient. There was no awards ceremony; instead they had a tent that served as the drop bag pick-up (they had this, too) as well as award and shirt disbursement location. They had a packet prepared for you with your drop bag waiting according to your arrival at the finish. All of this was within about 50 yards of the finish line. The swag from the race was really impressive, especially considering the affordable entry fee. The shirt is a long sleeved tech tee that has already become my favorite, among at least 15 other technical shirts I own. They also provided a pretty nice bag at the start a couple steps in quality up from reusable grocery bags - heavier material, zippered, and with water bottle mesh at the ends. If you are searching for a medal that comes packaged with a mobius strip, this is also the race for you; they are not amazing, but they are above-average quality and distinctively designed. The icing on the cake for me was the age group winner award, however. A mug, with 'Lake Wobegon' written on one side and 'Where all the women are strong, all the men are good looking, and all of the children are above average' on the opposite. Register early for this one next year, it's growing quickly and the field was limited to 350 runners this year (~300 registered).

Flat, personable, small town feel

Kudos to the organizers for doing such an awesome job in organizing this race! This was my first time running this race and I was impressed with how smooth the bus ride and bib pickup went and even more impressed by the wonderful volunteers who did a great job of not only passing out beverages but cleaning up as well. I was pleasantly surprised at how many supporters were out there on a drizzly cold day and how friendly and encouraging they were! And at the finish, everyone was so wonderful&. I really felt welcomed. This experience wants me to run more hometown/smaller marathons& I hope to be back next year!

Great run, glad I did it

Excellent course, beautiful scenery, and quaint, small Minnesota towns to run through. Given the rural nature of the course, and the small number of runners, there were few spectators, but those who were there were enthusiastic. Excellent volunteer support. This was the absolute best post-race food I've had after any race, and they also gave out really cool Lake Wobegone Trail throw bags. Overall, a great race and a great value, too.

A great value, fast, friendly, & beautiful race!

My husband & I both had PRs at yesterday's marathon & he also qualified for Boston! This was my 6th marathon and definitely my new favorite. The weather was in the 40s and misty, which was perfect. A little windy after the turn at 11 miles, but a lot of the course is surrounded by trees, which cuts it a bit. The volunteers and spectators were amazing. They were so excited for all of the runners and welcomed us with open arms at the finish. The race entry fee was only $45, the shirt is the nicest I've received for any distance, and the medal is beautiful. We also received a messenger bag, which was used for the bag check. At the finish they wrapped me in a foil blanket, handed me a bottle of water and my checked bag, with my finisher shirt. I headed right into the trail facility where they had a great spread of food. Hot broth, bananas, oranges, juices, yogurt, coolers of soda, freshly delivered pizzas, & cookies. We sat next to a space heater and chatted with other runners as we refueled. We were able to park right by the finish so after a change of clothes we headed home to Minneapolis. We thought we might miss the crowd support you find at the bigger races, but this was fantastic. I was never crowded by other runners and the water stops were so easy to run through. This is a must-run marathon!

Perfect Course for a PR

This was a great race - and ideal for a PR. After the first mile, which had a good downhill, the course was virtually pancake-flat: with just some occasional minor ups and downs. The tail-wind was nice the first 11 miles too! The school facilities at the start area were perfect for the number of participants: it was great being able to be inside to stretch and warm-up, with hot coffee, fresh water, snacks, and bathrooms rather than portable toilets. The gear bag was much nicer than expected, and the bag drop was well staffed: both before and after the race. Spectators were sparse, due to the nature of the course, but the spectators that were along the route were enthusiastic and helpful. I highly recommend this race: for the beautiful scenery, the excellent staff and volunteers, the free goodies and food, and most of all, the flat, fast course that is conducive to PRs.

Great, relaxed race - not a sea of runners

I am so glad that I ran this race. It's new, so I thought I'd give it a try. It was easy for my family to navigate. The course was very pretty mostly, with some boring areas. No traffic to fight. I loved the fact that a number of pro photographers posted pictures you can pick up free from the LWTM website! The downside was the bib-number pickup - it was a mess. Good thing is they realize it so it should be better in 2011.

Very Nice Run

I am a warm-weather runner. It was cool to start the race (light snow on the ground and snow on roof tops), but it warmed up when the sun came out. We were also lucky that the wind was on our right shoulder, so we weren't running against it the whole time. The course is VERY FLAT and good for running a PR (I did a PR even with having to stop two times along the way for bathroom breaks). Fans were at each road crossing helping out and were very energetic, and it felt like they were very happy to be there - I guess it was warm for them. ;-) Water/Gatorade stations were well stocked. That was marathon #29 for me and state #17. This was well organized, and with a little tweaking on getting the numbers for the race (which the race director already said she would do next year), it will be flawless. I highly recommend this one.

Great Race!

This is a really nice event. The people involved are friendly, it's well organized and the course is definitely one you could PR on. (Even if I didn't!) There aren't a lot of spectators, but the ones that are there are very enthusiastic and encouraging. Given its small field (200-250), you're likely to spend a fair amount of time running alone. The race director also does an excellent job of communicating with participants both before and after the race.

Quite the gem

This was an incredibly well organized race. It trumps many of the large, big-crowd marathons in its personalized attention. The finish line was such a treat. The person who put my medal on me took time to congratulate me and ask if there was anything I needed. The finish line refreshments were set inside a building where you could sit, stretch out and enjoy your own personal feast. The race director was very kind and responded promptly to emails (even silly questions were answered!). Finally, the race committee organized a post-race shower facility at a local gym, which made it very convenient for out-of-town folks like me. As for the course, it was about as flat as you can get and quite picturesque. I planned to use it as a long training run, but I actually finished in an impressive time for me. Make sure to add this to your race calendar!

flat, beautiful, well-organized

This race was just fantastic. The course is flat (outside of an easy downhill within the first mile) and totally beautiful. The race is incredibly well organized. There was a line at packet pick-up because I arrived to the start somewhat late, but it progressed quickly enough to get through in good time to start. I gave 5 stars to spectators because, while they were few in number, they truly made me feel like they were my personal fan club whenever they popped up along the course. I can't think of a downside to this race (especially at $40/registration). Major kudos to SCRR. I'll be back.

Fast, scenic, and a must-run!

I loved the flat, scenic run through rural Minnesota. There is something special about small-town marathons - all of the benefits of the big races without any of the hassle. The facilities were clean and plentiful. Volunteers were awesome and so friendly! My favorite part of the race was the first third, where a green canopy of trees covered the trail. The trail joined several towns together, so it was nice to visit several communities along the way. This is a flat, fast course with a great opportunity to run a PR and qualify for Boston. The race photographer took many photos along the way, so you will be guaranteed to find yourself in the photos posted on the website. What a nice touch. The shirt is among the nicest I have. Sharon Hobbs and her volunteers must be proud of hosting such a well-run race. This is a must-do race; I will be back.

Outstanding race on a pristine trail!

One of the best small races I have run. Great trail through the Minnesota countryside. Perfect weather in 2010. Light snow the night before made for a crisp race day! Great volunteers, and the spectators were awesome. Great finish and nice finisher's medal and shirt. Race number pickup, held the morning of the race, could have been better - my only recommendation for a change to this great marathon.

Awesome!

This was the second year that I have run this race. I had a great time last year and was expecting the same this year. What I got was everything last year had and more! Anything that I would have changed about last year was bettered this year and made for a great time. I know that Sharon the RD had nothing to with the weather other than the time of year the race is run, but you couldn't have ordered better weather than what we received yesterday. This is the fastest course I have ever run on, and the miles really fly by with the changing scenery. I PR'ed on this course last year and this year I PR'ed again, bettering my time by over six minutes, which finally earned me a spot at Boston. If you are looking for a low-key, super-fast race, where the people are more than friendly and perhaps could be the best marathon you have ever run, Lake Wobegon would be it!

A fun small marathon in a gorgeous part of MN

This was a fun marathon. It is small, but the course is gorgeous, scenic, flat, and fast, taking you through four quaint towns and a gorgeous mix of woods, lakes, and farmland. The race is organized by a local running club, and they clearly know what they are doing and what runners like. Good support from aid stations and guys patrolling the course on bikes. Efficient use of drop bags between the start and finish. Nice technical shirts and attractive medals to the finishers, and no shortage of food and drink after the race. Spectators (and volunteers, for that matter) get 5 stars because, while there were not a lot of them, they were quite enthusiastic and helpful. The entry fee was a ridiculously cheap $45 at the time I registered. For all of the little personal touches that went into this, that is an incredible bargain. The chilly/cool weather and favorable NW winds (at your back, or at least helping, for most of the race) were an added bonus that produced a number of really good results. I would highly recommend this race.

Could not get any better.

Let me start out by saying that I PW'd. Bad. My Death March began at mile 18. That being said.... This is by far the best race I've ever been in. I jumped right on a bus and was immediately on my way to the heated high school. Bag drop took about 2 seconds. Props to the girl singing the national anthem without sound equipment (yes, the race is that small). Nice downhill on mile 1, then the whole race is on the path. It was a cool day, but the trees on the path knocked down the wind (ended up being dressed too hot). The SCRR folks made everyone feel welcome. Aid station folks were all great. The roving bike patrol was great too. Finally, thanks to Race Director Sharon for managing this gem. Best race ever.

This is a don't-miss marathon!!

This is a race that should definitely be on your race calendars in the future. It's a beautiful course, yesterday's weather was absolutely marathon perfect (upper 30's at the start, no precipitation, cross/tailwind), and it's very well organized and a great dollar value. Very good for a BQ race, as the course truly is "fast and flat." Custom finisher's medals, technical shirts, abundant food for finishers AND spectators (homemade cookies, pizza, fruit, bagels, soda), and race prints signed by the artist for age-group winners. This is a MUST-DO marathon!!

Great

This is a fun marathon. A small but first-class marathon.... All 200 runners get VIP treatment.

Nice Low-Key Event

Weather was perfect for the 2009 race. Cool weather, with even a tailwind at times. The course is on a very nice trail and is quite scenic. Course is also flat and fast. Very enjoyable run if you don't mind the lack of other runners around. Event is very well organized. Enjoyed the run.

Outstanding

I had high expectations for this race that were exceeded in every possible way. The organization was outstanding, especially having the high school open at the start and the easy packet pickup and bag drop. The volunteers were amazing. Where else can you drop off a nice running coat at mile 12 and have it waiting for you at the finish line? This race was clearly organized by runners who know running. They thought of every detail and left nothing to chance. The course is flat, and the volunteers are friendly. If you live the the Twin Cities, especially the northwest suburbs, you would be crazy to not have this race on your spring calendar.

Great for 2 years in a row!

Yet again, a beautifully organized race on a great, quiet trail! I can't add much to my comments from last year's race. If you want a serene, low-key and beautiful event, this is your race! The long-sleeve training shirt is a nice addition this year as well. Thanks for a wonderful experience!

This is a new hidden treasure!

We had very high expectations about this marathon after reading about the inaugural year on MarathonGuide.com, and after several prompt and friendly e-mail exchanges with Sharon, the race director. The expectations were met, and far exceeded what we had hoped for! This is a real gem that's set in rural MN. This race offers a very fast, flat course with only a few slight, gentle upgrades. What a great group of friendly volunteers the water stops, to the finish line, to all points between. We liked being able to stay warm inside the high school in Holingford before the race. Great tech shirts, post-race pizza, cookies and conversations. You hear about fast courses... well, this is definitely one of them. Easy on the eyes, and run on a well maintained asphalt trail that has changing scenery to keep it interesting. We came all of the way from Texas to see my better half's family in her native state and run this race; it was worth every minute of our time! We hope to be back.

Great

Great organization, volunteers, and scenery. A fun, "low-key," scenic marathon for when you want to enjoy a nice run in the country and don't care about spectators. Flat, easy course. Will run again.

First time marathoner

Overall, I thought this race was very well run. The volunteers were helpful. The scenery was great (a bald eagle flew about 20 feet from me, directly over my head). The trail is in great condition. The course is flat, and the wind was at my back for the last 15 miles.

Another great year for LWTM

With the greening of spring just under way, the chances for a beautiful cool day this time of year in central Minnesota are high. In 2009, we had perfect race weather. I heard stories of many PR's (including my own) and heard many comments about the beautiful surroundings from people who traveled from other states and Canada. A well organized and managed race all around!

Great Race!

I had a wonderful time at this race. It was very low-key and laid back. The course was mostly flat. The scenery was nice and the weather couldn't have been better. The organization was superb and the fans were very supportive. The aid stations were well stocked and helpful. I would recommend this race to anyone looking for a PR or an overall good experience. The free shower, pool and hot tub at the local fitness center added a nice touch as well.

Best Little Race I Have Ever Run

If I had to pick one word to describe this race, I would say that it was "relaxing." It is a point-to-point on a blacktop, rails-to-trails trail. Parking at the finish was ample, packet pick-up took about 20 seconds, the bus ride to the start was on-time and short, and there was a warm high school so that the runners could hang out and stretch indoors before the race. Packet pickup moved from the finish to the start before the race, so folks not needing to ride the race buses could check in at either place. I was totally blown away by how well-organized this race was. Drop bags were provided so that we could send sweats from the start back to the finish, miles were clearly chalked on the trail, and water and Gatorade were where they needed to be - and in different cups so the runners could grab just what they wanted. A free shower was lined up at a local fitness club. The volunteers were super nice and I think some of them brought fruit and other goodies that were provided by them as individuals and not by the race. The course itself was beautiful in some places, peaceful in others. The asphalt was wide, smooth, and had no camber. There were some beautiful views toward the beginning, and no hassles with traffic. It was neat to run through the country for awhile, then come right through the center of a very small town, and then be out in the country again. The few major traffic crossings were well-controlled; traffic was a non-issue. There were long stretches where there were no crossings, but invariably wherever there was a road, there would be a few people cheering on friends, family, and the rest of us too. My special thanks to a young lady who put some chalk art on the path early in the race. I can't imagine living in the Twin Cities one hour away and not doing this race every year; it was certainly worth a trip up from Chicago. Thank you to Sharon and everyone else who worked so hard on this race - it really is a little gem.

A lovely little marathon

This race is for you if you're looking for any of the following: a flat course; pleasant scenery; a small, low-key event; more spectators than you would think likely for such a small race; a great shot at a PR; a very pretty medal; or a nice shirt completely free of tacky sponsor logos. A wonderful bonus was the fact that a local fitness center allowed racers the use of their showers, pool, and hot tub.

Showcases the beauty of rural Minnesota

Beginning in a small town in the heart of Minnesota, and progressing along a trail built on an abandoned Rail Road track, the course allows views that one cannot see from the roads. The race offers a nice mix of quiet scenery viewing, punctuated by groupings of fans and aid station volunteers cheering you on. The finish is especially memorable as it is visible on a clear day for a good mile and a half, pulling you forward. As the race grows, the transition from quiet countryside to supportive crowd scenes will become more marked and provide for great emotional boosts along the way. Well organized - both the runners and volunteers had a great time!

A great race to run at any pace.

I ran some 23 marathons in my earlier years and had not run this distance since 1990. Someone told me about the Galloway method of run-walk. I did this at the Lake Wobegon. And with a very poor winter training schedule, I was able to finish under 5 hours. This is my 70th year and I may continue with the run-walk method. The LWTM is ideal for this kind of run. The trail itself is great and the running through towns give you a flavor or rural life in Minnesota. This was a great race with all the organizational details covered nicely. Thanks to Sharon and her crew.

GREAT local marathon!!!

This was a wonderful, small marathon with great race vounteers and services. As an old railroad bed that has been paved, there are no drastic elevation changes. The scenery was wonderful and varied. And it was QUIET! If you're like me and, out of exhaustion, can't process the crowd noise late in the run, this is definitely the marathon for you! And yet, there are numerous places for family and friends to cheer you on during the course. Being the inaugural run, I was expecting some glitches - there were none. Sharon and her crew really know what they're doing. I'm looking forward to next year!

superb small marathon

Scenic and level, with good and sufficient water stops. Attentive volunteers and excellent organization. A marathon done by runners for runners. You'd expect an inaugural marathon to have some glitches - but this one had none!! Efficient start and great goodies at the end - even for us at the back of the pack. Five stars for the spectator's spirit, not their numbers. Good for a 1st time or a BQ.

Great Run

The race was very well organized; flat course with very few (if any) hills. The volunteers where great, and ready to help - and with near-perfect weather conditions, this was a fun race. The post-race goodies far exceeded some of the big marathons that I've done. The race director and her staff did an awesome job!!!

Very scenic course

This Lake Wobegon Tail Marathon is one of the most scenic courses I have seen. From small towns, to lakes, to farms, to trees, to streams. No one would be disappointed with its beauty. The course is flat and fast. Everything was well thought out and organized. Sharon covered every detail perfectly. The volunteers were extremely supportive and helpful. I am already looking forward to this race next year.
