Low-Rent, Essentially No Music

Left feeling a bit in the twilight zone after this race. It's literally called the MS Blues marathon, and advertises 'live blues bands every 2 mi of the course,' yet there were no bands! There was ONE guitarist picking softly at mi 4, and two guitarists playing around at mi 7. That was literally it. The website mentions pacers yet there were none. The aid stations were bare bones. Most had only water. A few had gatorade. Only ONE had gu. No other nutrition so bring your own! The address for packet pickup was the Capitol building, yet the tent was across the street and down a hill (not visible from street) without any signage.. Overall I don't think you get your value from this race. It felt pretty low-budget and poorly organized.

Worst marathon ever!

Four of us came to this marathon and four of us were disappointed &.the course was filled with potholes, we were running in traffic, the finish line ran out of Gatorade and they closed the medical tent before the marathon was over. Although it was promised, there was no fuel on the course for the half marathon.

Potential to Be Larger Race

Some random insights: I signed up about six weeks before the race and was able to find a room at the Westin (nice hotel), across the street from the start/ finish area. Also, flights into Jackson are fairly cheap. Weather was nice and cool at start. The expo was super small, but organizers are enthusiastic, and people are friendly. I was able to get in line for the porta-potties, use gear check and make it to my corral all in the matter of 9 minutes. The marathon in 2020 was a two-loop course, which I had never done at a race before. I liked that fact that it allowed me to get an idea of what to expect in the second half, and actually made the second half feel like it went by faster. There are hills. Lots of rolling hills. Hills get a little larger in miles 7-5-12.5 and again in miles 20.5- 25.5. But none of them are killers. If you live in areas without hills like I do, however, they can be a challenge. Spectators are sparse, and some of the aid stations lacked proper support. Law enforcement and volunteers do a good job keeping course safe. I struggled to find a good place to carbo-load in the downtown area the night before. I ended up taking a 8 minute Uber to a very good Italian place. Overall, I would recommend it you're looking for a Mississippi race. There is a lot of potential with this race.

Desperately needs course marshals and signs!

I came in expecting the hills and the potholes, but out of all the marathons I've run, this the only one where I had to ask for directions multiple times (from both spectators and police officers), and at one point I felt physically threatened by traffic because there was nobody monitoring one busy intersection. This year the course was a double loop for the full marathon, and the full marathoners had to run through the actual finish line after the first loop, to register a half split. I know of multiple marathoners who didn't do this (it's a little weird to run through the finish when you're not even close to finishing!) because there were no signs or marshals. I saw two 5K runners backtracking after other runners shouted out to them that they had missed a turn; there was one volunteer calling out, '5K, turn left!' but again, no signage. On the second loop there were several turns that were unclear because the course was very empty with just the full marathoners running. Sometimes I didn't see anyone else running and had to stop to look for cones or taped arrows on the pavement. In one spot the full marathoners on the second loop actually had to cross paths with runners on the first loop. Other things: Having packet pickup in an art museum was cool, and I didn't care that the expo was small. The blues anthem was great; I wish the different races had had staggered starts just for crowd management in the early miles, but given the overall small race size, it didn't bother me that much. Bag check was easy and quick, aid stations and port-a-potties were reasonably available, and I liked that there were public laptops for runners to check their results afterward. I hadn't been keeping track of the race changes over the past few years and was disappointed not to get the famous guitar-shaped medal. I like that the 2020 medal is simple and not too gaudy, but it's a tire - I hope Continental doesn't insist on that for future medals. What really surprises me is that NOWHERE does the medal have the race date (not even the year)! especially because it was Leap Day - there won't be too many marathons taking place on Leap Day. Also, I wish there'd been more thought given to the full marathoners at the end. I'm a middle-of-the-pack marathoner, and when I finished, much of the food was gone (though there was plenty of jambalaya), the musicians were packing up, and there was no race photographer to take pictures of runners with their medals in front of the finisher's wall. The absolute best thing about this race was the incredibly friendly locals everywhere - hotel, museum, and restaurant staff, race photographers, spectators (extremely supportive, just not very many of them, hence the 3), police marshals, and even just random people walking around going about their day were all warm and welcoming and just generally fantastic. Although the race logistics were okay overall, the second loop of the course was confusing and nervewracking, and it was the wonderful locals who saved the marathon from being a horrible experience for me. Thank you, Jacksonians!

Beautiful Day

It was a beautiful day to run through Jackson. I loved the southern hospitality and food. Take the time to listen to blues music, study up on the civil rights history and soak up the culture. This place is in the center of an interesting and historic civil right struggle. I learned a lot. It is hillier than you think it will be and there are potholes too. Marathons are challenging, educational adventures. That's what this was.

The Blues has seen better days....

First let me say that I live 90 minutes from Jackson and have run the Blues Marathon/Half 6 times: the half once, then the marathon 5 times as a pacer (I was also supposed to run in 2017, but the ice storm caused the cancellation that year.) This was my 69th marathon. The Blues marathon has definitely gone a bit downhill from its Jon Noblin & Blue Cross Blue Shield of MS days. COURSE: There's nothing good to say about the road conditions in Jackson. They are horrible. That's been the case for 10+ years. The city is very slowly trying to work on them. The course starts/finishes in downtown near the convention center/capital area. Small parts of the course have changed here and there over the years but for the most part, it hasn't changed much in 7 years. You run through some beautiful neighborhoods (Eastover, Belhaven), then through Fondren and the hospital area, and along Frontage roads. It's not a terrible course, but there is a healthy amount of hills. It's not easy, but it's not the hardest race I've ever run (My PR was once on this course.) NEW MANAGEMENT: In 2017 (after the 10th anniversary race was cancelled), the sponsor contract expired and was not renewed (Blue Cross). The Race Director searched and searched for a new sponsor and finally found one later in the year. The RD was involved in 2018 but the race was also sold to an out-of-town event management company (PEM). Attendance was down because of late starts to registration and other factors, but the 2018 race was successful. This year's race was managed 100% by PEM. There were several communication issues (not answering emails, the pace team being set up at the last minute, volunteer coordinator changes which led to a lack of volunteers) and a lack of funds to keep the race at the level that it had been in the past. AID STATIONS/RACE SUPPORT: There was a noticeable lack of volunteers and aid stations this year. I do want to point out that those volunteers/law enforcement that were there were AMAZING!! In years past, the roads and neighborhoods were filled with volunteers and people cheering! It was nearly impossible to get lost or even go without seeing a volunteer, band or spectator within eyesight. There were Bands everywhere. The JSU band and dance teams would be out at several places along the course! There were large stages set up along the road with full bands playing and a big crowd of spectators dancing and cheering. This year: Race signage was sparse. Most neighborhoods were empty. The JSU section of the course was a ghost town! Several aid stations had just a few people at them (in the past, there would be 20-30 people cheering and handing out aid!) We passed intersections with 1 person responsible for stopping both lanes of busy traffic. There were some volunteers who had brought water jugs and cups and were filling bottles for runners at random places. In fact, at mile 8.5 of the marathon, we came upon an aid station that had not been set up yet (I was the 5:00 pacer, so this was 90 minutes into the race - more than half the marathon field had already passed this area). The tables were on the ground, boxes and water jugs stacked up, coolers empty. No one was around. At this point, we had only seen 2 other official aid stations. We (me, my friend and a few in our pace group) pulled the water jugs and cups to the street so others behind us could at least self-serve and fill their bottles. FINISH LINE: In years past, there was a HUGE tent at the finish with Pizza, gumbo, and lots of other hot food choices. This year there was water, bananas, pretzels, granola bars and the beer trailer. That's it. The medals in the past have always been notable and unique each year. This year, they were still customized, but small and unimpressive. BOTTOM LINE: If you've had this race on your bucket list for a while, you may have missed the hype. It's definitely dropped several slots on the list of best races in MS. This race is NOT living up to the reputation it built in the past. The 2020 race is already open for registration. They have moved the date to February and the site claims to have a new course, so we'll see what that brings, but forgive me if I'm not optimistic yet. PEM has some work to do to regain the reputation that John Noblin built. John, your absence was definitely noticed this year.

Horrible management ruined a great race

On behalf of all Jackson, MS residents and runners - I apologize for this race. If the management company changes, please give us another chance next year. This was my 8th time running this marathon and it was horrible. The weather was amazing and the course good (hilly and tough, and yes, lots of potholes, but fun). The race switched to a new management company and they ruined it completely. Online stated there would be water/aid stations every 1.6 miles until mile 20, then every mile until the finish). This was a lie. I counted 8 fully staffed aid stations on the marathon course. This is not appropriate and dangerous. Then at the end, the food was bananas and a small pack of pretzels OR one granola bar. Nothing hot. Oh, and only water. No sports drink, sodas, milk, etc. I am ashamed that this is my home town race. Every prior running, had great support, plenty of aid, and wonderful post race food including the standard pizza, and also tamales, tomato soup, etc. Finally, the medals for this race have consistently won national top 10 awards. Not this year. It is a small white guitar. It doesn't even have the date on it. The organizers were too lazy to even unpack the medals from the plastic wrapping.

There are course changes in 2020.

The roads in Jackson Mississippi are rough. I've had less tripping hazards on trail marathons. The roughness is hard on your feet. The organizers indicated 400 feet of elevation gain. There really is about 1000 feet. They also indicated water and gatorade every 2 miles. The first four locations were 2.5 miles, 5, 9.5 and 12. After that, aid was every 2 miles. Some of the mile markers seemed out of place as my splits were too erratic. If you need crowds and bands to finish a race, this is not the race for you. Race did start on time with an excellent blues guitar rendition of the star spangled banner. All four race distances, marathon, half, quarter and 5km started at the same time. So, you have all sorts of runners going in one direction. Nice finisher medal and quarter zip shirt. Small race field allows you to start in the first 100 feet. There are a lot of nice places to eat and hotels within walking distance of the start.

Plethora of volunteers

Don't know that I've done too many races with this many volunteers, all enthusiastically welcoming us to Mississippi and thanking us for participating. It was even more impressive due to what had to be miserable weather for them. Getting that many people to volunteer speaks well for the organization The course was challenging, at least for this flatlander who did virtually no hill training, but if you're like me and are at the point in your running career where speed is not a priority, that really wasn't an issue. There weren't a lot of fans or entertainment on the course, but you have to chalk some of that up to the soggy conditions. And the folks that were there were great. As seemingly was the case with a lot of runners, this was my Mississippi race in my quest for 50 states. Is it the best one in Mississippi? Can't speak to that since I haven't done any others, but I'd certainly recommend it as a well organized event with plenty of Southern hospitality.

First time running this course

I chose this particular marathon because it was rated very high for marathons in this area. Pros: VERY challenging course with many many hills and I LOVE a good challenge. Excellent race director. Good swag bag with a long sleeve pullover which I LOVE so much! It's a nice change from the technical shirts usually given. Beautiful medal! LOVE BB King! Cons: pavement is AWFUL! I'm so proud of my usual klutzy self NOT twisting an ankle on the course. The roads are full of potholes. I even had a spectator apologize and say, 'You must not be from Jackson'. BUT i'll take the awful roads for those HILLS! LOVED it! The course was sooooo quiet. Not a lot of action from any cheering squads for sure. Even the residents or family members on the side of the course held their cheers until they saw the one they were there to support. That's the first 26.2 I've ever run that was so quiet. Any locals could have just brought a 'boom box' out with them or something???? With the weather being wet that could have effected the lack of support along the course, and only maybe 2-3 bands??? maybe??? With the run being the 'blues' marathon I would have thought there would have been much much more music and partying along the course. I'll still run it again....it's close to me and a challenge! I'll give it a second chance no doubt! The volunteers were very sweet!! They may need a bit of a lesson on showing us some ENERGYscreams...'Good jobs'...cow bell ringing...cheering....But they were very sweet.

A good marathon

The good: -Really nice swag... handsome 3/4 zip, BB King CD, harmonica, and easily the most creative medal I've ever gotten -Good organization... police, race direction, aide stations, and H20 -Friendly people -Race entry gets you a ride on the trolley for a bar crawl that night -The expo was pretty decent for a smallish race The Not So Good -Surprisingly hilly... a deceptively tough course -Not very scenic... Jackson is not a very nice city -Jackson is also not a very safe city, according to the residents themselves -Poor condition of the pavement -Except for start and end, there weren't very many people on the course save for the occasional family sitting in their driveway -The race website said that my hotel was .5 miles from the start. In reality, it was almost 2 miles from the start with NO shuttle service. Note: Some of my 'not so goods' may have been exacerbated by the weather (i.e., poor course support and rain-filled potholes)

Amazing Hospitality.

I have never experienced such wonderful hospitality on the part of the organizers. Every cross street was manned by a volunteer who wished us 'Good Morning' and thanked us for coming to Jackson. The logistics were very convenient, and many of the downtown businesses were part of the race weekend. The Marriott treated us to breakfast before the race, and were ready with drinks / snacks and a towel (it rained) after the race. The course was hilly; not gigantic hills, but continuously rolling hills. Overall, a great race.

Excellent Organization but slow course.

This race has typically been known as the Mississippi Marathon over the years...the only Marathon in the Jackson, MS area. It has been run over numerous courses since back in the 1970's. The best course was out-and-back on the Natchez Trace south of Jackson with gentle rolling hills. I ran a PR of 2:37:30 there. I ran that numerous times and also ran several courses that started and finished in downtown Jackson like it is now was lucky to get near 3 hours on those. All of the courses from downtown are pretty hilly and not what I would advise running for a first-timer or if you want to run a good time. However, organization and support are great. I think that the course is what it is because of the visibility that the sponsors and the City of Jackson want.

great race

first a thank you to RD John Noblin for going above and beyond to help me, also to Marica and Mike for organizing the B2B bus. I would not to try to BQ on this course, it was hilly. The surface was not exactly a ballroom but I did not find it too bad. The spectators, volunteers even the cops were enthusiastic! If I had a dollar for everyone who said thank you for running I would not be a millionaire but I would have a few dollars in my pocket. I thought the medal, jacket and the harmonica were great, also the pizza and chocolate milk was appreciated. I would recommend this race for MS.

Mississippi or MississiHILLY

If looking to knock out all 50, you have to do this one to get MS. It is well organized and the people are oh so friendly! The roads are in rough shape and I never knew there were so many hills in the state, but no complaints at all. It was my first back to back, with Alabama following the next day. I was worried I would be spent but somehow managed. The weather was sooooo cold which made me so happy. The Star Spangled Banner at beginning of the race put chills in the spine. Hendrix would have been proud. Friendliest people around. From hotel to restaurants, to officers on crowd control. I am so glad I took part and would encourage anyone that wanted to see Mississippi to give it a go.

Highly recommended

I ran the Mississippi Blues Marathon in 2015. I highly recommend this race. This was my 14th marathon but my first Mississippi Blues. I picked it due to positive word of mouth and online reviews, and I found pretty much all of the good things Ive heard and read to be true. Highlights: " Super friendly volunteers. They all seem genuinely grateful that you have chosen to travel to their city to take part in their event. " Very nice expo for a smaller race. " Easy logistics; lots of parking at the convention center for the expo, and on race day I parked in a garage literally across the street from the finish line (the website said that parking in the garage was $5.00, but the gates were open and the parking was free). " RIDICULOUSLY huge medal. This thing is a monstrosity 10 x 4 - I cant decide if its a gorgeous work of art or a tacky piece of kitsch. Probably a little of both. So yeah, its awesome. " Post-race food was good (pizza!) and plentiful. Things to consider (not necessarily negative, just things you oughtta know). " This is a SERIOUSLY HILLY course. I usually take all the complaints about hills in the reviews on this forum with a grain of salt. But trust me; there are hills, hills, and more hills. None of them are monsters but they keep coming and coming. It starts out easy and you will be lulled to a false sense of security in the early miles, but the hills get worse and worse as the course goes on. The worst stretch is mile 23-25. The two long uphill grinds on the IH 55 frontage road in mile 23 are soul-crushing. But the last mile is flat, so theres that. " The course was not closed to traffic; all intersections were manned by either a cop or a volunteer (or both) and they did a good job of directly the traffic, but you will often be running alongside cars. At one point I had to come to a dead stop to allow a cement truck to pass after he blew right by a cop and drove through the course. " Yeah, the road surface is bad. I dont think the streets in Jackson have been paved since the Carter administration. " This is not a scenic course. Nothing spectacular about downtown and although you run through some nice neighborhoods, you will be too busy looking for potholes to really notice. " Instead of a race shirt we got a . . . what is it, a running vest? I dont know . . . some kind of zippered vest with pockets. Its not the type of thing I would normally wear and I would really rather have had something I could use as a training shirt. " The on-course live entertainment advertised never materialized. I dont blame them it was in the low 20s when the race started but it was still a bit disappointing.

The Blues made me so Haapy.

I LOVED this race. 25degrees at the start,I'm from Ohio so that's perfect running weather. The hills were like a roller coaster the momentum going down carried you up the next one. The Medal was 100% SWAG,best ever.Friendliest volunteers . Expo open till 9:00. Host hotel 2 blocks from everything, 3:00 check out, free bananas and muffins...stay there. ...no complaints here just an ear to ear smile....

Friendliest Race Ever!

Everybody was friendly, the spectators, racers, organizers, musicians, police, massage therapist, and the volunteers were just plain fantastic. I rarely review races but i felt compelled to exclaim what a great job the folks in Jackson do in putting this race on. If they could have turned the temp up a few degrees that would have been nice. Warning for anyone running next year please do a lot of hill workouts. This is Not a complaint, to me it just adds to the character of this great race. Thank You Mississippi Blues!

great race-bad roads

I've run the Blues 4 times (1 1/2 - 3 fulls) PRO's The medal is awesome! Everyone gets a harmonica & blues cd which is awesome. The post-race is great! good food and music. If you are fast enough to win the race, the award is a brand new custom made guitar. No Kidding. The course is through downtown and some really nice neighborhoods. BUT... see Cons EH's The t-shirt/vest/pullover. I LOVE the pullover from 2014 is awesome! I wear it all the time. The blue vest from 2015-not so much. Honestly it looks like something a walmart employee would wear. CONS- You almost need trail shoes for the course. The roads are in TERRIBLE shape! Each time I've run this race, I have ankle & foot pain from the conditions of the roads. Jackson has some of the worst kept roads in the south! Overall-Very fun race. Awesome bling and party atmosphere. Just bring trail shoes.

organized, hospitable, incredible swag

When I arrived, I found out I wasn't on the registration list. The R.D. took care of it, not only reassuring me that all would work out, but had the asst. RD drive me to my hotel (Tony, wash that thing or use the Mercedes). Organization, course, aid stations, post race swag and nutrition were incredible. I loved the medal and vest. The harmonica, CD and southern hospitality were icing on the cake. There were few spectators, but they couldn't have been more supportive. Thanks for a terrific day and a wonderful experience. I appreciate all the care you took in making my registration issue not an issue. It is a hilly course, but they are not awful. I felt that your thorough website prepared us for exactly what to anticipate race day. I also appreciated having a bus to shuttle the B2B to Mobile. Logistically, you made everything simple.

Best Medal Ever!

I absolutely loved this race! I've run probably around 40 marathons and this was one of the best. It was well organized. The volunteers and police officers were so nice. Everyone kept saying 'Welcome to Mississippi' and 'Thank you for running today'. The water stops were well supported. Interesting course through some beautiful neighborhoods. I highly recommend this race! The finisher medal is huge and really cool!

Fun and well-organized

I loved everything about this racegreat medal/swag, excellent traffic control, extremely friendly volunteers on the course, lovely neighborhoods to run through. I can't tell you how many times I heard 'Thank you for coming to Jackson!' from the volunteers and spectators along the course. The roads are in rough shape in many places but that isn't something the marathon has control over. It's got some challenging hills so probably isn't a PR course but I would definitely do this one again!

Mississippi Can Be Cold

Tough weather and conditions but a wonderful experience. Jackson knows how to put on a marathon. The music was wonderful and I loved how the marathon played up the Blues aspect of Mississippi. As a new transplant to this state I can say I am proud of what I experienced. The course was not easy but 26.2 never is.

Run for the medal

Pros: the finishers medal is way too cool. Worth the beating. The volunteers are the best. Every course worker thanked us for coming to mississippi. Expo/packet pickup for well done. Race packet came with a runners vest, harmonica and key chains. Nice. Cons: my definition differs on the term 'rolling hills'. Toward the end the hills got steeper and longer (I think). Jackson roads are just this side of third world with cracked and patched surface for most of course. The weather this year was frigid with start temp a balmy 27 degrees. And although I was in the heartland of the blues, I failed to see the genre well represented. Three bands on the course and a few car stereos playing music (note: Shake it off by Taylor Swift isn't close to 'the blues'). The Star-Spangled Banner played on guitar at start was cool. Maybe it was too darn cold for the bands. I know it was too damn cold for me! Probably explains the lack of spectators, too. (Again, understandable considering the cold). Overall: good 50 stater with the worlds best medal.

Fun event, great swag!

Did this race as part of the back-to-back with Mobile (First Light marathon). Expo was small but nice. We stayed at the Jackson Marriott, only a couple blocks from the expo and start/finish. Downtown Jackson was unimpressive as it seemed somewhat blighted but you can't beat the southern hospitality!! Everyone was so friendly. I mean everyone! The course was unremarkable but there were a fair amount of spectators and ample volunteers, all of whom were enthusiastic and encouraging. This course has lots of rolling hills and is not a fast course. It is somewhat scenic but mostly residential. The finish medal is awesome! Would recommend this if you need to pick up Mississippi or as part of the back-to-back, but not really a vacation marathon.

Beautiful City/Friendly People/Best Medal Ever!

Doing my marathons alphabetically by city name so 'Jackson' was my 'J' marathon. Course had just enough rolling hills, volunteers were plentiful to hand out refreshments. Pay off in completing marathon is 'The Best Medal Ever'. I would recommend booking one of the preferred hotels to stay before they are sold out. Finally coming from Canada it was 'kewl' listening to people with real southern Mississippi accents.

Friendly people

Jackson, MS has the friendliest people I have met anywhere! It started with the rental car company staff and the hotel clerk who wished me luck to the many, many spectators, road crew volunteers and police who waved and cheered and ended with the TSA crew at the airport who congratulated me. It was incredible. The race was fine - very hilly as others have said, but a nice tour of the city. I didn't see any pizza at the end, but the red beans and rice was awesome. Thanks for the chocolate milk. Many (most?) of us got fleece shirts with a zipper that didn't work, but the race director made it right and my new and better shirt came in the mail this week. Kudos on acknowledging and fixing the problem.

friendly people,tough course

The course is largely rolling hills -there are only a few flat stretches. Good scenery overall. The Jackson State Campus was vibrant with energy from the band. Everyone I encountered in Jackson was friendly; however, as a slow racer I found some of the later aid stations abandoned. The water and gatorade was still there though. On the full marathon course spectators were sparse for long sections between miles 8-21 which is ok by me but some runners would like a larger crowd. Due to some of the volunteers taking off the 'road crew' was opening some of the intersections starting about 5 hours in. According to the race brochure this shouldn't have happened for another hour. Myself and a few racers around me commented to the road crew about this but they continued to pick up cones, etc. Fortunately one of the road crew on a scooter kept returning to our group and keeping us on course - his assistance is much appreciated. The hills between mile 21 -24 are tough. The medal is unique and very cool. Last but not least : I recommend the IRON HORSE Grill for good beer and good quality bar food.

Well Organized Race, Great Volunteers

This is a race that is worth doing because it is well organized and the volunteers couldn't have been better. It is not very scenic. It has rolling hills but nothing all that difficult. For those complaining about the hills, toughen up, all races don't have to be flat as a pancake. Take what they give you and enjoy the experience. As for the roads, they were just fine. I don't expect marathon courses to be as smooth as my kitchen floor. What's the fun in a course if you aren't dodging something here and there! I stayed at the Marriott and would recommend it as it was close to the expo and start/finish line. They also graciously allow late check out - 3 p.m. The medal is as good as it gets - large and very colorful.

TOUGH HILLY COURSE

This marathon is a definite not a PR course. The website said it has a few small hills and would be called a roller course. The course is hilly the most of the way. The roads in Jackson are horrible with potholes and cracks in the roads everywhere. It is too bad since this race has the potential to be one of the best not only in the south but also in the country. The volunteers were totally awesome and the people who came out thanked us for coming to Mississippi. Unfortunately there wasn't too many of them out there. The post- race was good with pizza, bananas, cookies and chocolate milk!!! Thank god some race directors listen and provide chocolate milk at the end. The race shirt was a long sleeve fleece winter sweeter which is nice but does have zipper problem. My quick solution was to leave it zipped and pull it over the head. Medal was totally AWESOME. Guitar shaped medal which has to weigh at least 2 lbs. My favorite medal by far. You also get a harmonica. The packet pickup was easy at the convention center and had a lot of vendors along with racing legend Bill Rodgers. Some suggestions for runners of future Blue marathons: I stayed at the Marriott which was nice but you will need a car if you don't want to be stuck there for the weekend. Jackson is completed dead on the weekends. In summary, as I am now 1/5 through the 50 State quest, I am glad I ran this one for the Mississippi Marathon. If Jackson can ever get there roads fixed, this would be a perfect hilly race.

Hilly is an understatement...

Overall, the Blues Marathon was well organized and the plethora of volunteers more than made up for the sub par crowd support. To say the course was hilly is an understatement. The elevation profile does not look bad, but trust me... the hills are tiring. The roads were not in the best shape and I found myself dodging potholes and unevenness in the road quite a bit towards the end. The weather turned out to be fantastic. At the start of the race it was around 50 and warmed to the low 60's by the conclusion. I cannot believe I was wearing a tank top and capris in January! Would I run this race again? It would not be my first choice due to the challenging course, but the location is very convenient and the finisher's medal is top notch! Hills, Hills, and more Hills

This is my 1st year doing the MS Blues Half Marathon, it was a hilly route, but a good race. The weather allowed for a fun, nice, and hilly run.

great organization & small town feel

Organization was top-notch, from the expo to the race itself. The race has a great feel starting with the expo where you receive a blues cd, harmonica, and long-sleeve zip shirt with your packet. The start was a mass rather than a wave, but this wasn't an issue due to the number of runners. The course was very well marked. The pure number of spectators was, as expected, not overwhelming, but those that were out were all extremely friendly, I can't count how many individuals thanked myself & the other runners for coming. The volunteers were equally as welcoming. Not a lot of music on the course, but given the number of runners for the full (around 800), it wasn't disappointing. The course was quite rolling, but no single hill was too painful. The course is well set-up to run predominantly in the shade. Overall, though not a PR course, it's a great event.

Great Marathon in Welcoming City

Everything about this race was well-done: 1) Medal, Half-zip fleece jacket for full marathoners, harmonica and CD were great. 2) At the expo, they sold last year's t-shirts for $5.00 and had many great bargains. 3) Packet pickup was very easy. 4) The course show-cased Jackson nicely. The neighborhoods were beautiful. 6) All volunteers did a great job and were very welcoming to the runners. 8) Plenty of food at finish line (chocolate milk, pizza, fruit, cookies). 9) I stayed at the Jackson Marriott and it was convenient to start/finish and expo. 10) Personnel at the Marriott made runners feel very welcome and had pre-race food available and towels, water, Gatorade and bananas available for after the race. I strongly recommend this race. I found Jackson to be one of the most friendly, welcoming cities I have ever visited.

Great volunteers, tough course

Volunteers were the best. Very well organized. Pros....best medal ever, and I always enjoy the blues CD. Nice refreshments afterward including beer. Expo is small, but well done. Great entertainment before and after the race. Cons...rude Jackson drivers getting upset at intersections, a long line at the beer table (too much time marking bibs and not enough time pouring drinks by the two over-worked volunteers), no tee shirt (just a cheap fleece with a flimsy zipper that broke in one try) All the cons can easily be fixed next year which is why I mention them. The pros make this a race worth repeating. Oh yeah, the blues crawl is a good idea, but terrible execution. I don't think all the venues realized they were part of the crawl.

A Worthy Destination Race

Looking out the window on my flight into Jackson, I thought this would be a pretty flat course. Wrong! The up and down never really stopped. Pros - Challenging, but satisfying course - Excellent work by volunteers - Nice expo, very good post-race event - Good support from spectators - Easy coming and going from the event - A great pairing with the First Light Marathon in Mobile, AL Cons - They take great pride in the medal, but it is about the size of a Flavor Flav clock medallion (still cool, though) - Not a PR course - Don't stay in the Red Roof Inn at the Fairgrounds unless you enjoy cockroaches

My quads are singing the blues!

Others have said it, but it is worth repeating...train for the hills, hills, hills and don't forget the downhills. I enjoyed this race even with the unbelievable number of hills. Nice little foot tour of Jackson, MS...my first visit. A few areas were not very scenic, but I am not sure how you make every step of 26.2 miles scenic? The roads were a little beat up (ok, a lot), but the thing that bothered me most was that in some placed they were very canted. You needed to pay attention and run near the middle of the road to minimize. It was helpful to have driven the majority of the course the day before. We stayed downtown at the Hilton Garden Inn and that was nice. Staff was very friendly and helpful. However, be aware that if you stay downtown that there is some serious restoration needed in that area. Large number of abandoned/for sale buildings and not many things open, especially on the weekend. This is NOT like staying in downtown Chicago, Boston or even Des Moines. Hard to find an open place for lunch. FABULOUS volunteers, just the best I have ever encountered. Spectators were pretty sparse, but that doesn't matter much to me. Those that were out were really nice. Start was very congested, especially with the porta potty placement. Couldn't hear the announcements at all. Only saw two bands on the route?? So not sure where all the music went?

Tough course but great race

'Rolling hills' - a phrase a race director will use to describe a course when 'It ain't flat' is an understatement. Well the Blues lives up to this and then some. I don't think there's a level piece of pavement on this course. I've run steeper hills and even rolling hill courses but I don't recall one that had hills from start to finish. The expo was easy if not a little small. Race day went off on time but the port-a-potties near the start line created some weird crowds when trying to line up in a pace group. Jackson hasn't paved their roads since the 70's, it seems. One spot along the course was patched with a painted comment that read, 'Citizen Repaired'. Shovel-ready jobs haven't reached Jackson, apparently. There was supposed to be music along the course but I only remember 2 stages. Water stops were plentiful and the volunteers were just awesome. They went out of their way to thank the runners for coming to Mississippi. Of course, I thanked each one I could along the way whether they were manning water stops, acting as course marshals, handing out medals, or working the expo. All are appreciated. Did I mention that the course was tough? But what a great experience overall. And the medal... oh the medal... big, shiny, and with extra bling. The race premium was a 1/4 zip fleece and there was a CD and harmonica in the race packet. Post-race included chocolate milk, soda, gatorade, water, beer, pizza, cookies, and I'm sure some more stuff I didn't see since my hands were full at that point. Well done. This was my 48th marathon in 36 states in just over 6 years and I enjoyed it very much.

Train. Hills.

This is a hilly beast. Don't plan to 'walk the up hills' b/c you'll be walking the whole race. Train for it and suck it up. The best medal ever. Cool pullover for race shirt. Road help and spectators were the friendliest I have encountered. Post race massage fabulous and still available for 5hr finishers (rare!) same for refreshment tents, which were restocked for the later finishers. Cant really drive the course beforehand, but good to drive a couple of areas to get a feel for the roads, hills, and many many turns. Road quality was fine.

MS Blues Marathon

If you want a challenging route with hills, this is the race for you. The police officers and volunteers really patrolled the traffic. I like the fact that the route included Jackson State University. The medal is by far the best medal I have received. Love it, Love it!!!! The post food was great and the massage was out of this world. They had seven stations going, the massage therapist were very friendly and professional. Once I finished receiving my massage I was able to walk as if I had not ran. We stayed at the Hilton and the staff from the valet, the restaurant, the check people, all of them were very professional and accommodating.

friendly volunteers and fun race

I was surprised by the hillier than expected course with lots of ups and downs. The condition of the streets made me watch my footing the entire way. The volunteers are the friendliest ever and Jackson is a welcoming city. The medal is so big and heavy I couldn't wear it and I'm not sure my medal rack is going to hold it. I loved the shady course that wound through town as well as residential areas.

Awesome age awards

I've been fortunate to win age awards in this marathon. The first year's award was a beautiful copper guitar. This year's was even more unique: a giant, heavy metal, five inch guitar pick with name, place, and time engraved. Really a nice piece. Next years? Who knows if they can top this one. Impressive. And thanks!!

Great swag!

I enjoyed the challenge of the course but it was very boring. Although almost everyone I encountered was very friendly, the drivers stuck in traffic were very rude. The race swag was top notch and staying at the host hotel is a must. The Jackson Marriott is very close to the expo as well as the start/finish line. They had race day food and allowed late checkout. Since the entire race is run on shared roads and it not scenic, I probably won't do this race again.

Most friendliest volunteers!

The volunteers were the friendliest I've ever experienced. I typically thank the volunteers for their hard work however this was the first Marathon where the volunteers repeatedly answered 'Thank you, we're glad you came'. The medal was amazing, free parking one block from the start, a CD and a Harmonica made this the best value. Others have stated the negatives and I agree with them but no need for me to repeat what has been said. So...to accentuate the positive, I want to thank the volunteers again and let them know how much I appreciated their friendliness!

Proud of my hometown!

I was born and raised in Jackson but have lived out of state for the last couple of decades. I took the opportunity to run this marathon and am glad I did. I'll say that Jackson is a lot hillier than I remember! I live in the flatlands now so I don't get much hill training. For someone like me, this is a very challenging course. I did PR but it was difficult. I don't have much to add besides what has already been said - well organized, GREAT volunteers, great swag bag, etc. The medal is by far the best I've ever received. I was very proud of my hometown for how they presented themselves. The weather was even perfect (mid 30's at the start, low 40's at the finish, little wind, and overcast). If you are looking for a good race that is off the beaten path, definitely consider this one!

Lots of ups and downs, literally and figuratively

Pros / Cons Course: Challenging rolling hills / Challenging rolling hills. Beautiful in many parts, unfortunately not in the last few miles / Road conditions were terrible making footing almost like running a trail marathon, saw some serious fall injuries. Organization: Small but well organized Expo and packet pickup / Few Porta-Potties at start and even fewer on course made for LONG waits. Gorgeous finisher medal / No finisher shirt. Spectators: Very friendly and welcoming / Not a whole lot of them although the rainy conditions may have kept many away.

Friendly, fun, great swag

A very nice smaller race. There were about 2K runners total (755 in full). The Halfers split off early (~mile 3-4) so crowding isn't an issue. There were plenty of water stops. They all had Gatorade and there were 3 gel stops. The course does have lots of hills. They are short and most aren't steep but they are almost constant. If you come from a flat section of the country be forwarned. I come from a hilly area so I held up OK. The course can't be called scenic but its pleasant. Most of the course is through neighborhoods. These are nice if unspectacular. There were lots of trees so if its a sunny year (not 2013) you will get some shade. The complaints about the road surfaces are accurate in my opinion. It also seemed to me to be worse after mile 18 or so. Not the time you want to worry about your footing. This was the main reason why I gave the course only 3 stars. I disagree w/ the person who complained about traffic. There were always plenty of cones and volunteers/police at every intersection. Also most of the roads were quiet ones. My biggest complain was the lack of portapotties on the course. When they had them it was only one. Also this was an urban, suburban race so just using a bush wasn't an option. Race directors do need to understand this. I lost over 5 minutes waiting in line at one. The expo was small but organized and you could get any last minute supplies. The extras for this race are great. Beyond a good quality tech shirt (w/ a cool design) and a great medal (my best yet) you get an excellent gear bag, a harmonica and a blues CD. If swag is your thing then this race is for you! The friendliness of this race is really one of its distinguishing features. I can't tell you how many times a volunteer thanked me for running in Jackson. I'm supposed to be thanking them! I had to catch a flight so I didn't take part in the post race festivities but it looked like fun. I stayed at the Marriott and that was great. Late check out, Gatorade in the lobby, walking distance to the expo and start/finish and no 2 night minimum. I would strongly recommend this race.

Great Race Organization and Execution!

Having run several 'large' marathons I prefer these smaller down home events. Mississippi Blues did not disappoint. Race organization was excellent. They did a awesome job on the medal (biggest one I ever earned) There was not much pre-race communication but if you read there website you knew what to do. I'm sure if there was an issue they would of let the field know in advance. (paying attention New York?) Expo: Fine for the size of the field. Liked ability to purchase past event race shirt and CD's Course: Challenging and glad I drove the night prior some of it to get the flavor. Remember you go down hills faster so it all evens out in the end. Few rough road spots but I've seen that in Chicago. Aid Stations: Well run and stocked. You knew who had water and Gatorade. Crowd Support: This was the highlight! Everyone and I mean EVERYONE was cheering for you the whole way, Never had that happen in any of my races. Hats off to the southern hospitality. On course Race Entertainment: Looked forward to and enjoyed the different blues bands throughout the course. Post Race Refreshment: I was HUNGRY after the race so all the great pizza, beer, soup, rice and beans, sandwiches were welcome. Post race events: Unfortunately it rained post race and the cooler weather dampened being able to hang around and enjoy the local blues band. The Blues Crawl via a trolley at night was fun and gave participants a flavor of Jackson night life. I need a juke joint where I live Overall, this event rocked! Great way to start off the marathon year.

Still a good race

I've run the half or full every year, did the half this year. The excitement has kind of faded, not as many spectators and buzz, but still a great event, and participation increased again this year. Would love to see more bands or something to bring the spice back next year. Pros: Awesome medal Love the backpack Harmonica! Good traffic control and well planned course Great food and drink at the end, with a band all morning Good crew of elite runners, was fun to watch them finish. 99% of volunteers were super great. Great tech shirt Reasonably priced event By far your best choice if you are trying to check the box for this state. Cons: Everybody said the half was too long. Road conditions rough in spots Blues crawl Saturday night was a disaster. Two places were closed, two others too crowded to get in. The two volunteers where the half and full split were rude and not helpful. Thats as nice as I can put it, they should never be allowed back.

Well managed, challenging, friendly

This marathon has a lot for its size: Professional/top amateurs in addition to the common folk. Entertainment along the course. A challenging course with little or no backtracking. The spectators were sparse but enthusiastic and the food at the end was substantial and varied. Half marathoners split off early so overcrowding wasn't a problem. Mile markers were accurate (not always the case in some marathons). The expo offered a lot for its size. Everything was accessible and convenient. From a consumer perspective it's topnotch from the packet bag itself and the goodies in it to the beautifully designed T-shirt and medal. Definitely recommend this one.

Good organization and spirit

I respected the organization so much in 2012 I asked to participate as an expo volunteer in 2013 and they allowed me the privilege. Many of the volunteers are BCBS Mississippi employees, so no wonder the organization operated so tightly. Small race, big spirit, hospitality is everywhere. Medal was outstanding like in 2012. Race shirt was good. Pizza, fruit and Gatorade post-race; I think beer was available. Pub crawl happens in the evening post-race but I fly out before that happens (though I heard it's good). Race worth repeating. 3:40 pacer (Bob) was inspirational. I suppose the course is topographical for Mississippi, but that's a relativity which varies by runner experience. I'll say however it isn't dime flat as Odessa or Chicago for that matter. For me it's no more hilly than Baton Rouge, Little Rock or Tyler. Free parking at the State Fairgrounds is a relief compared to larger races in the US and Europe.

More organization for a Boston Qualifying race

I was expecting alot more from a 'Boston Qualifying' race. I ran the half marathon. The expo was small, but nice, especially getting to hear some Blues performers there. But come race day, there were only 2 bands out on the course...lots of empty stages. The water stops were ok, but not plentiful, neither were the bathrooms. There were plenty of bathrooms at the start line, but only ONE at each water stop. There should be at least 3 bathrooms at each water stop, people were waiting in line at each bathroom along the course of this 'boston qualifying' race. The course was tough, lots of rolling hills and cracked asphalt. Alot of live traffic exposure...we were running on access roads parallel to Interstate 55 w only orange cones separating us from traffic exposure at times. This course takes runners around a hospital, which was a problem when 2 civilian cars without their flashers on, headed to the ER turned into a group of runners. I'm used to running w traffic, but usually cars wait for a break in the runners before turning-these cars didn't. The cop 'holding' the intersection for us didn't do anything but say, 'it is a hospital ya'll' and leaned on the hood of his car. Thank goodness we were all paying attention or we would've been hood ornaments. The finish line is up a hill and doesn't have a chute. There were professional photographers there to take finish line pictures in front of a race backdrop, but the organizers didn't put the backdrop inside the finish line and keep it protected. The photographer couldn't take anyone's picture because runners and their families were snapping photos w cellphones and cutting into others' photos. I had to pull the photographer aside to get a 'finish line' picture...my backdrop was the crowd behind me. There should've been a finish line chute w/mulitple backdrops and people waiting their turn for a photo. If I qualified for Boston at this race and wanted a picture, it wasn't going to happen if I hadn't snagged the photographer by chance. This is the 6th or 7th year for this race. Most of the mistakes I had issue with for this race should've been 1st or 2nd year mistakes, and not on a race touting it's a 'boston qualifier'. The finish line food was good. Surprised to see cheese pizza, that was great. Would've liked some orange juice though and didn't see any. It was also nice to get gels along the half marathon course...usually those are reserved for the full marathoners. I had this race on my schedule for 2012 and had to back out 4 days prior because of a family issue, and the director was kind enough to allow a roll over for this year. The medal for this race was great, but that was about all that was great about it for me. This was my 7th half marathon. I invite the race directors to visit the Little Rock marathon and half marathon on March 3, 2013, to see how improvements can be made with regards to bathrooms, waterstops, entertainment thru out the course, and finish line chute pics and protection for the runners.

Loved Mississippi Blues Half Marathon

I chose this half marathon race for my Mississippi state, and so glad I did. Pros: - Expo was small, but organized. Lots of parking and volunteers. - The race had about 5,000 runners but it didn't seem crowded at the start. - Plenty of parking at the race start/finish area. - Lots of water/gatorade stops and all the volunteers were extremely kind. Thanking you for coming to Jackson to run. Where else do you hear that? - The start and finish line were well organized. - The medal is AMAZING and BIG! - Nice food options for after the race (pizza, mini subs, fruit and beer) - Even the weather cooperated and it didn't start raining til about 11am. - There was even a trolley cruise Saturday night called 'Blues Crawl' and it would take runners from bar to bar to drink and listen to music. Lots of fun. Con's - Lots of rolling hills. And this town needs to fix their pot holes. Or at least flag the big holes. Overall, a very nice weekend in Jackson. Stayed at the downtown Hilton Garden (very very nice), which is about 3/4 of a mile from the start. This hotel was also on the trolley stop for the 'Blues Crawl' for Saturday night.

Awesome volunteers, well run race.

Not the most scenic marathons out there, but still a great race. The volunteers were phenomenal- all were cheerful and seemd genuinely happy to have us out running. The few spectators that were out were the same- just wish there had been more of them. The course was challenging enough- not flat, but not overly hilly. The roads we ran on were not the best- it almost seemed like I was running on a trail with all the potholes to dodge. Still, glad I did it and would recommend this race to anyone.

Great fun, challenging course

This is a great race, but not because of the course, which is pock-marked, heavily cambered and relentlessly hilly. It's a great race because they do a great job with the plentiful aid stations, friendly and enthusiastic support, bands, great organization and, most of all, all the extras. The medal was the best EVER, which would have been enough. But they also give you a harmonica, a blues CD of the bands, great discounts on dining, a blues bar crawl, a nice backpack bag and a few other extras. It's just exceedingly well put together. And the Marriott, where I stayed, could not have been more accommodating to us runners, putting out fruit, water, Gatorade, granola bars, etc... both before and after the race. All in all, a great experience.

A Hilly course but friendly atmosphere

I am a slow runner/walker. This route was hilly throughout, from beginning to end - you have to climb a hill to the finish line. The event was well organized, everything was accessible and convenient. The organizers patiently waited until everyone was finished and the water stops were there for the last runners. Jackson State water stop (mile 23) had entertainment for the last runners which was a great boost. The hills caused the course to be a reach for me, I'm a slow poke.

Great marathon

This was a well-organized and fun marathon, showing off many nice and gorgeous parts of the city. The volunteers were GREAT, out there cheering until the end despite the cold and rain. The city people were among the friendliest I've ever experienced, happy about their hometown race and welcoming. This was the hilliest city race I've ever done, be prepared to climb hills throughout. The medal was great, and there was plenty of food and beer at the finish. A super nice experience!

Well organized race but boring course

I have mixed feelings about this race. The organization was great and they really tried to put their best foot forward. There were blues bands along the course and a really nice post race reception with beer and water and plenty of food even for us slower runners. The finisher medal is 1st class. Parking was easy to find close to the start. The race volunteers were friendly and cheerful. Now the negatives.... this course was boring. A lot of miles were through neighborhoods. Only about 10 houses were out to cheer on the runners, many of the rest your could see reading or watching TV in their houses. Obviosuly the race director can not control this. So, if you are local to Jackson or need MS in your 50 state guest, this is a fine race to enter. I would not go out of my way to enter if I was from out of town or wanted to do my first marathon.

Frigid weather but warm hospitality

Will remember this as one of the coldest races I have ever run (and I'm from CT! But the organization was excellent and I was so impressed by how many spectators and volunteers were out there cheering us on while braving temps in the teens. Would love to run this one again under more 'balmy' conditions to hear all the bands that understandably were not there.

Mississippi Blues was fantastic surprise

First time to run 26.2 in Mississippi (2012) and I was pleasantly surprised by the superb organization of everybody involved in the entire city. The car rental company reps at the airport were well aware of the race event and provided me with instructions on how best to drive to the expo on Saturday. The expo was pretty good and featured a generous shoe sale. Volunteers were heavily involved at the expo making sure people knew where to go first for packets and shirts, etc. The race winds through nice-looking neighborhoods, gels were provided on the course (thank you), and the finisher medal was one of the best two I've collected. It's hard to beat the Little Rock medal. The race shirt is so unique that I resist wearing it for fear of splotching it in the laundry. I'd rather only look at the shirt from time to time to remind me of a fine day on the running course. Yay Jackson!

Great Local Marathon

This is my second time to run the Blues. I will keep coming back. It is a small city race and very well organized. Great swag to go with the theme of the race. Blues CD and harmonica. Expo was a smooth process. No traffic or parking issues. You can park right by the start with no problems. GREAT volunteer support. Very friendly and welcoming. Plenty of aid stops that had plenty of Gatorade and water. 3 stops were giving out GU/Hammerhead Gels. Roads are rough, so watch your footing. Definitely a up and down course. I will remember the course for the hills. But it was fun and challenge. Loved running past the JSU drummers. A few other bands were scattered throughout the course and were playing the whole time. I ran past a duo playing early on in the race and there were still there when I ran back through near the end a good 4 hours later. Finish was great, was handed my huge medal and water. Plenty of food and drinks left(I came in at 4:57). Great after race show. They had chairs/tables set up so you could relax and listen to the band/singers.

Super Experience in Jackson Mississippi

Absolutely loved this race, the hospitality, and the swag. The course was much hillier than I was prepared for, but hey...no biggie! Crowd and volunteers were super. Volunteers were extremely friendly and encouraging. The after-race festivities were the best yet of my 11 marathon starts. I'd definitely do the Blues again, and you should give it a try too.

Great race; southern hospitality at its best.

I chose this race for my Mississippi run (50 states) and I am glad I did. Well organized with great race premiums: shirt, swag, and finisher medals are awesome. The race packet even included a blues CD, harmonica and discounts at local restaurants. The course was a little hilly but not impossible for this 67 year-old grammy. Everyone in Jackson went out of their way to make us feel welcome. Our race hotel featured events for the runners, the local historical sites and museums catered to us and the restaurants were excellent. Nice, family-friendly atmosphere and great entertainment at the race expo. Definitely recommend this race!

The Blues were Hot this year!

Record heat hit the Midwest this year, making times slower in the marathon. A warm 55 at the start and by 10:30, it was close to 70. Could have been a cold rain; weather is relative. Outstanding support with GU, fans, and aid stops. However, you had to be careful in several sections not to trip in pavement cracks. One area, around mile 18-19 was signposted since there were a lot of holes there. Will probably be repaired by next year. Course was ideal: rolling hills, none severe just the right amount to work out quads and hams. Nice swag: a harmonica. All I need now are lessons to play it. Got to love the blues.

Hilly but really fun race!

I chose to do this race, and the First Light Marathon in Mobile, AL the next day, because they partnered with each other and offered a 20% race discount. I really thought this was a nice race, although quite hilly with very few flat sections. The course offered a nice blend of urban and residential settings. Started downtown near the capital building, headed north into some residential and college campuses, with a lot of tree cover. Headed back south to loop around downtown, for a slight uphill finish. Every volunteer was superb on the course, and I tried to thank every one of them. And every one of them thanked me in return for coming to their city to run. Plentiful aid stations, 3 GU stops, and overall, a great race. The medal was biggest medal I've received, about the size of a CD, with a guitar across the front in full color. Very classy. The shirt was a full-color shirt as well. Seems a little heavier than a standard tech shirt. Wonderful post race party with sandwiches, pizza, drinks, and Blues Music. If you can put up with the hills, this is a great race. Not a ton of crowd support, but everything else was great. Heat, hills, humidity, and hospitality!

Incredible Volunteers! Continuous Rolling Hills

This was my 14th marathon and I've never ever had volunteers thank ME for coming to run their course. At EVERY SINGLE water stop I was thanked for coming to Jackson and running their race. EVERY SINGLE volunteer was filled with joy and wore big smiles the entire race. Their encouragement in those last few miles was so appreciated. Kudos to all the volunteers! YOU make this race awesome! And thank you also to the police officers who kept us all safe throughout the miles. I was not expecting continuous hills. I knew the course would be hilly but seriously, there wasn't a single flat spot on the course! The weather was also unexpected55 starting temp; 70 finishing. That's too warm for me! Made the last few miles very tough as the heat wore me out/slowed me down more than the actual mileage. I was very grateful for the at least 13 miles that were in the shady neighborhoods of Jackson. Also enjoyed looking at the beautiful houses in those neighborhoods. (Many home owners were sitting out in front of their homes cheering all of us on!) The road was only rough from about mile 18-22 and that's when many marathoners start getting tired/foggy brained. So would it be possible to flip the course backwards? Then the road is smoother (fewer holes) in those final six miles when marathoners are not as clear minded. LOOOVED the food after the racepizza! deeeelish soup! rice and beans! sandwiches! Nom nom nom!!! Great choices! This is probably my favorite medal! So fun! Seriously huge! The Marriott provided awesome support to the marathonerslate (2pm!) checkout so you could shower before heading home and snacks/drinks before the race started and after the race. It was also about 3-4 blocks from the start of the race. Definitely do this race! You too, will no doubt, be wowed by the friendliness of Jacksonians!! Woo Woo!!!!

Amazing experience

Overall, an amazing experience. I was not sure about this marathon due to my poor training, a 7 hour time limit, and lots of hills but I made the trip after all and I am so HAPPY that I did. 1. Hotel very close to start and finish 2. All the Volunteers in their bright orange shirts were AMAZING - very friendly and positive. As I would thank them, they responded with 'Thanks for coming!' 3. Police support - fantastic, not sure if Jackson had in police officers at work that day cause they ALL seemed to be directing traffic. 4. Plenty of AID stations and GU for the marathon 5. Race director and support staff - upon finishing I approached someone in a blue polo shirt and asked if I could change my marathon shirt size as the one I requested was to small. He happily said yes, and then offered to find one and walk down to my hotel so I wouldnt have to walk back up. Wow, I was shocked at the offer but glady took him up on it. 6. The course was nice - I enjoyed the variety of scenic views around Jackson. Yes, there are hills but everytime you go up - you get to go down so I enjoyed the challenge. 7. Medal - best one out of 20 marathons! Nice detail and colors. 8. Shirt is fantastic as is the matching bag, my kids are already using it. 9. Weather - LOVED IT! 10. Overall - all the people I engaged with over the weekend were friendly, positive and helpful. Thanks Jackson! Glad I made it to the race.

very hilly, little to no spectators,HUGE medal

I ran the Mississippi Blues Marathon in conjunction with the First Light Marathon as back2back marathons. The Blues Marathon is VERY hilly and challenging. There were very few spectators. The medal was definitely the largest medal ever!!! They also gave us a harmonica and blues cd. The organization was very good. Improvement needed in crowd support!

awesome marathon from start to finish

I wasn't sure what to expect when we signed up for this marathon, what we got was an amazing experience. The race started right on time at 7am which I loved the weather was perfect mid 50's (compared to the 20's and 30's of central New York). The crowd support was outstanding all the volunteers were thanking us runners for running the course and the police officers did an outstanding job of stopping traffic for us runners. The pace groups were amazing the group I was with was telling jokes at each mile marker which helped lift our spirits, I had so much support on the course it helped get me through the hills which seemed never ending but the downhills were nice. I would definitely recommend this race for experienced marathoner's not for a first marathon but its awesome!! I am so glad that I did this marathon and may come back again. There was plentiful water stops and GU stops were ideal and had a lot of variety. The finish was great and the medal is huge and the prettiest of all the marathon's I have done. The food at the finish was good with lots of choices. To sum it up, the course is tough but not impossible, incredible crowd and volunteer support!! This is a must race for marathoners (and 1/2 marathoners). Great Job to all runners!!

Southern Hospitality !!!

OMG, over the top niceness. Even the police controlling the intersections thanked you for coming to the run. EVERYONE was so nice. The Marriott had theIR staff in the lobby as we left w/ water, oatmeal cookies, bananas, etc When we came back, they met us at the door with fresh towels. Party at the end was fantastic. These are the nicest people I've ever done a marathon with. Congratulations to Jackson MS. YOU ARE THE WINNERS!

Tough course, but worth every ounce of pain!!

This marathon far exceeded my expectations. PROS * friendliness of everyone, including race officials, volunteers, spectators, hotel (Marriott) staff, cabbies * very nice expo * great music post-race * race organization * early split between half and full marathoners * the best finishers medal of my 15 * plenty of water stops * well policed course * course ran through a variety of areas Be Aware *ups and downs and ups and downs and ouch (as advertised) ... actually, I'm not sure it is a con .. I viewed it as a challenge Cons * Downtown Jackson is fairly desolate and didn't seem overly safe/policed in the evening ... don't count on a nice evening stroll from your downtown hotel Overall 5+: way to go Jackson!! Although I'm pursuing 50 states, I will return to do you again next year!!

Great Race.

I've been lucky enough to run all of the Blues Marathons, and it's gets better every year. This year was great. Of course, you can't control the weather, and it was perfect. I even got a little sunburn! Not bad for January. Yes, there are lots of small rolling hills, none too bad, but man, there area a lot of little ones ! Great race, nice organization. Thumbs up.

Yes, 26.2 miles of hills

Mississippi Blues was almost everything I'm looking for in a marathon. Yes, there were hills after hills after hills, and I could have used a good flat stretch before mile 23, but no one hill was a killer. So that challenge aside, let me roll off the many plusses: 1. Volunteers and more volunteers. Yes, the organizers got this right. Aid stations done well, including 3 GUs. 2. Smiling, happy people. Almost creepy, but EVERYONE I met in this city wanted to welcome me and wish me well. 3. Decent variety on the course. After the first 2.5 miles, it was lots of older residential areas- about 15 miles of them. Good variety with interesting homes, changing scenery, and shade. Inevitably, the course passes through a few tired areas, but you get the good and the improving. 4. Great after party. Wonderful Blues concert. And considering that there was a half AND a full, believe it or not, there was plenty of food. Unlimited pizza and beer, but also tomato basil soup and rice & beans. That's a nice touch. 5. Reasonable logistics. Easy flights into Jackson and no need to rent a car. Quick cab ride to the downtown area. I got a great rate at the Hilton and walked to the start. 6. Yes, the medal is huge and the shirt is a work of art. Not sure I'd run in it, but I might frame it. This was not a PR- the hills and unseasonably warm weather (71 at the finish) nixed that- but still faster than my average. The experience was well worth it, And really, how many marathons are there in January (or in Mississippi...)? Do this one.

The Friendliest Marathon I Have Ever Run

Wow, this was a very tough hilly course but so worth the trip. Everything was top notch including packet pickup, race start,police/traffic control, ammenities, hotel, beer, etc. I would have given it a perfect score except the road conditions were tough. I knew it going in so I was very carefull but I definately could feel the difference in my feet during and after the race. The volunteers were the friendliest people I have ever seen. At least 100 people thanked me for coming to Mississippi. When I thanked a little boy, picking up cups, for volunteering, his response was,' My pleasure Mam thank you for coming to Mississippi'. I have never seen anything like it. The after party had never ending food, beer and music and volunteers even walked around the entire sight handing out extra bananas and water. I highly reccomend the Marriott. I was there 3 nights and everytime they saw me in the lobby they would offer me a free bottle of water. The bartender even offered water to take to my room after cocktails one night. And...the medal is HUGE!!

Awesome, Friendly & Fun Race!

Flew in from NYC to run the MS Blues. The distance from the airport to the hotels/expo is about 12 miles. The expo was well run and very easy to get in and out. My goody bad included a harmonica as well as the coolest race shirt I've ever received - a tye-dyed tech shirt!!! Groovy! Race Day - Walk the half mile or so from the Hilton Garden Inn where I am staying to the start. You line up by the honor system but they have pace groups with signs so you should know where to line up. Most people lined up honestly. The national anthem is played on the electric guitar. Cool! The conditions of the roads were somewhat poor only the first few miles and the last few miles with lots of cracks but for the large majority of the race it was never an issue. Yes, this is a rolling course but IMO, it's not as hilly as many reviews have made it out to be. All the hills are short and there are just as many downhills as uphills so I do think it's possible to run a good race here. The course does wind through several neighborhoods and returning to downtown by the Capitol Building. What was nice was that there were no long highway stretches that you often have in marathons. There are hydration stations every 1.6 miles with enthusiastic volunteers who constantly thanked me for coming before I could even thank them for their service. Traffic control was also excellent. With the half marathoners splitting off from the marathon after Mile 3, crowding on the course is not an issue at all. Not a ton of spectators but those that were there were awesome! Nice finish, eventhough it's a bit uphill but who cares? A friendly volunteer places the most humongous and without a doubt the coolest guitar-shaped finisher's medal around my neck. The finishers area also has free beer, pizza, sandwiches, soups, gatorade, etc. On my way back to the hotel, I pass by Downtown Cafe on Capitol Street where the owner is grilling burgers and hot dogs. He usually isn't open Saturdays but had a special menu just for the runners. Have to say, that this was some of the best food I've ever had. He was just an example of the downright hospitable and friendly nature of the locals. Every person will feel at home and welcome by the entire city of Jackson. Oh, and also drop by Elite Restaurant for dinner and get the famous veal cutlets in cream sauce!!! In closing, I highly recommend this race. Very well organized, great volunteers, no crowded conditions, great post race food. They really do treat the runners well here. Don't be too afraid of the hills, just incorporate them into your daily runs and you'll be just fine and will be glad you did this race. The entire city is appreciative of you participating in this race. I'm just sad that my weekend had to come to a close.

Great experience in Jackson, MS!

I traveled from California to Mississippi for this year's Mississippi Blues Marathon, and it was worth it! I knew I was in for a great experience when a race official even went out of his way just to help me with my registration because I had made an error. The race weekend organization and execution were exceptional. The race expo was small but efficient...appropriate for a race of this size. The race swag was great though! The creative race shirt captures the spirit of the race. The blues CD and harmonica were an unexpected surprise. There was no official pre-race pasta party, but the race bag included a long list of restaurants that were offering race weekend specials. I ended up eating at my hotel (Hilton Garden Inn) which had an excellent pasta special and was ideally located near the Expo and starting line. Race day was similarly well orchestrated. The starting line was well organized, all announcements were clear, and the race started on time. Aid stations were plentiful and well stocked and there was enthusiastic support at many locations on the course. I was impressed by the number of fans that said things such as 'I'm proud of you' and 'Thank you for running our race'...true southern hospitality! During the race, I found that the road surface was a little choppy in places, but at least there were signs posted to warn us. The course had many rolling hills as advertised, but there were no overwhelming climbs. I did enjoy the fact that the last 3-4 miles were downtown so that there were more spectators along this part of the course (although that didn't make the last 3-4 miles hurt any less). Once I crossed the finish line I received a huge medal that rivals that of the Little Rock Marathon. I then made my way to the food tent where I found plenty of Gatorade, pizza, cookies, bananas, beans and rice and soup (I was one of the earlier marathon finishers though, so I can't comment on how much food was left for the 4 or 5 hour finishers). The band in the post race area was fun and there were plenty of friendly, interesting people to chat with. In summary, Mississippi Blues is a marathon that I wouldn't hesitate to run again. I really appreciated the race director's attention to detail and the great southern hospitality. On a side note, if your a sports fan, I definitely recommend driving out to the sports bar Last Call to watch the NFL playoffs. It was recommended to us by some locals and we had a great time there.

Hilly course, Great people, Excellent swag

This was my 25th marathon and 22nd state. Being from Colorado, I always find the southern humidity a challenge, but that said this was a good run. As a general rule, I try to beat 4 hours - this one was a 3:58 - made goal, but just barely. Hills people - trust me - you're either going up one or you're heading down the other side pretty much the entire way. The people of Jackson were very nice and I have nothing but good things to say about the folks at the Marriot, spectators on the course cheering us on and the folks at the restaurants, etc. The city did seem overly quiet without many people in the streets downtown. Best for last. If you like swag, this might be the number one race in the country - or at least in the top 10 certainly. The race shirt is high quality and comfortable. The swag bag was a nice drawstring bag for those who care about that particular aspect. Also included were a Blues CD and a harmonica with the MS Blues imprint. The medal was really nice and HUGE - my Antarctica medal is big - this MS Blues medal is HUGE! Packet pickup was very well organized as was the event in its entirety. My compliments to the race director and staff. Great job!

Great race ... definitely recommend!!

This was a great race! PACKET PICK-UP: As soon as you came through the doors, you were greeted and helped along the race. Packet pick up was quick and efficient. They had a blues music playing to get you in the mood. RACE DAY: parking was fee and only 2 blocks from the finish line. Ladies DO NOT LEAVE VALUABLES IN SIGHT ... our car was broken into and purse was stolen. Cops were everywhere but it was our fault. The only real complaint was there were not enough porta potties at the start line but other than that everything was smooth and effortless. VOLUNTEERS: The were ALL cheery and friendly. The water came from water jugs and I was especially happy (bad RnR experience). The police officers were all friendly to and thanked us for participating. COURSE: HILLY!!!! but scenic. They mention the hills on the website, so practice. I PR'd at this course and shocked myself. POST-RACE: Water, Gatorade, bananas, BBQ, sandwiches, plenty to eat PLUS Back Yard Burger had a food truck. OVERALL: I think this was a great race, great course and I would definitely recommend the MS Blues marathon.

Fantastic Organization!!

The 2012 version of the MS Blues Marathon was fantastic! The organization is by far one of the highlights of this race. The volunteers seemed to be sincere in their appreciation of the runners visiting their city and thanked me for coming every time I spoke to them. Hats off to Jackson Mississippi's finest also who provided a safe course for the runners. As far as the course, it is hilly as advertised. Take the elevation profile seriously! Do your best to get your hill work in and everything will be ok. The hills aren't really steep, but there are plenty to go around. We call 'em 'rollers' where I come from and they keep coming right until the last mile. We stayed at the Marriott downtown who also provided first class runner support. They gladly offer late (1:00pm) check out on race day. Another perk is that the staff meet you at the door upon your return after the race and hand you a towel and offer ice cold gatorade in the lobby. Go ahead and reserve your room as soon as you register for the race as they go pretty quickly.

No Room For Improvement

I chose this race because of the feedback from previous years runners, via Marathon Guide.com. I give top praise to the R.D.,staff and well-trained volunteers. Race started on time. Gu and hydration was plentiful as promised. Very difficult course due to 100% hills, though not long ones. Well-marked course for direction and mile-markers. Plenty of post-race food. Food was proteced from non-runners eating it up, thank God. Great post-race blues entertainment. The community was in sinc with this event; southern hospitality abounded. I received, perhaps, the most impressive medal of the 42 marathons/ ultras I have ran. I recommend this race to the seasoned runner; experience this challenging, yet, rewarding event. Tough but absolutely doable. It will be unforgetable. Thanks to all.

Fantastic Run

The race's organization was great, the town welcoming, the volunteers, well what can I say that hasn't already been said about the volunteers, expect to add like others have that everyone of them thanked you for coming to Jackson to run. Starting at 7AM, the weather was perfect, not cold and not certainly not hot this year. The run is entirely on pavement with excellent traffic control. Even the folks in cars waiting in lines as we ran by honked their horns and cheered us on. So different from some cities I've run in. Another difference is road condition. The roads in Jackson aren't in good condition. Lots of potholes, ridges, heaves, etc. I had to laugh as around Mile 19 there was a sign warning that the next 1/2 of pavement was particularly rough. It looked just like the previous 19 miles. The course isn't flat, its either uphill or downhill with very little flat until the last few miles. The course isn't particularly scenic either. You go through some sections of town where the houses are amazing and in others where urban blight has a firm hold. Regardless the area, the residents all came out and cheered you on. As a final treat, the last 1/4 to the finish line is uphill, not a big hill, but after so many the last thing you wanted to see. There was one young lady standing out in the road cheering us on to finsih. She made enough noise for 10 people and made all the difference in putting a smile on everyone's face as they finished an unexpectedly tough marathon. Finishing is just over 5 hours I was amazed by the marathon medal, almost as large as Little Rock's (but not quite) and by the mount of food. For such a small race, there were still mountains of food for slow runners like me. All together this isn't an easy marathon, but its one of the most friendly in a town that is easy to get into and out of.

First Marathon

Great weather for the start, low 50's, a little warm at the end, high 60's. My first marathon. The rolling hills in miles 16 through 20 really got me. Not steep hills just a constant up and down. Well organized race, the town had great hospitality. Staying at the Marriot was wonderful and made it easy. A quick walk to the start finish so I did not have to wait at the start very long and a quick walk back afterward for a shower. The course was beautiful and the homeowners out cheering was really cool. Plenty of water stops. Great volunteers and a lot of them.

Well organized, tough course

Pros: Great organization. Fantastic volunteers. Well stocked water stations. Smaller race (3000 runners). Nice harmonica and medal. Friendly spectators. Not super expensive. Well stocked food tent. Did I mention the great volunteer support? Cons: Hills! Not the biggest crowds (but I generally don't care). Not particularly scenic.

Southern hospitality and a challenging course

This was my 17th half and fourth small race. Course support was great, and a nice surprise of plenty of real food like pizza, red beans and rice, and tomato soup at the end. I am used to just bagels, bars, and fruit at the bigger races. Love the medal, the harmonica, the shirt and even the bag. Hills are definitely a challenge. The people in the town are incredibly nice though. Highly recommend it. Stay at the Hilton Garden inn and definitely, definitely eat at The Parlor Market. Amazing.

A Welcoming Town and Tough Course

The volunteers and spectators were among the friendliest and most enthusiastic I have experienced. I was constantly being thanked for choosing to run in their town. The neighborhoods were full of residents in their lawn chairs cheering us on. The course was a tour of the town; I saw many beautiful neighborhoods. The start, finish and expo were an easy short walk from the downtown hotels. Traffic control on the course was excellent, even with the traffic backed up on the main roads. Good choice of food at the end, even for a 5.5-hour runner. I loved that they had soup at the end and one was a vegetarian choice, yeah! There were some bands along the course but not as many as I expected, but those that were there really lifted my morale. The entry included a free blues crawl (entry into the venues featuring blues music that night), but I always feel bad that I am too tired to partake in these after-race parties. The challenges: This was a hilly course. You are either running uphill or downhill, there is no level stretch until the last couple miles coming back into downtown. The roads were really rough: potholes, speed bumps, patched pavement. Even though they tried to glo-paint most of them, there were a few that hid in the shadows or were missed. My husband and father both took a tumble when they tripped on some chunky pavement.

Great Volunteers

Positives: 1 ) If you want a marathon where you have cheering crowds and the most friendly people (who thanked you for coming to run), this is a good one. 2) The expo was small but nice. 3) The medal is the largest one I know of in the USA, even larger than the Little Rock, Arkansas medal. Very nice. Cons: 1) Downtown Jackson, MS seemed like nobody worked or lived there. It is a very quiet town. 2) My biggest complaint is the road surface. It had broken asphalt and concrete, holes and ridges. In my 20+ marathons I have never fallen, but at this one I hit the pavement hard at mile 18. There was an unmarked ridge of asphalt that caught my toe and I did a 360-degree flip in the middle of the road, and hurt my shoulder. Another runner in our party tripped at mile 20 because of the poor road conditions.

THANK YOU, MS VOLUNTEERS AND STAFF!

A huge thanks to the volunteers and staff for: national anthem by electric guitar to start; encouragement up the brutal (for a flat-lander) hills; fun music throughout; marmalades for energy; placing that ENORMOUS medal around my neck, covering me with a blanket, removing my chip and tying my shoes back up at the finish; and offering beer for recovery. THANKS!!

Is it possible to rate this 6 stars??

Probably the best overall marathon experience of any that I've been involved with. The City of Jackson makes you feel welcome and wanted. From the expo workers to the course volunteers, the people are the friendliest and nicest people I've ever into!! The course is pretty challenging, with relentless, rolling hills. The hills are pretty small, but they are relentless for the first 21 miles. Oh, and did I mention the last .2 miles are uphill to the finish?? As tough as the course is, it is also scenic and fun along the way. As I said above, the people surrounding the race are the best ever, anywhere, and that includes Boston!!! The cotton shirt is kind of lame, but the harmonica, Elvis sunglasses and the enormous finisher's medal are extremely cool. No issues whatsoever with half marathoners/marathoners converging on the course... this was policed very well. The finisher's medal was so large that it set off the TSA at the airport. After a quick bag search and several oohs and ahs from the TSA workers, I was on my way home. DO NOT MISS THIS RACE!!!!! A MUST-DO!!!

Pleasantly Surprised

My 6th marathon, but first non-big-city race. Although I read good reviews about this race from prior years, I still went in with low expectations, but I was pleasantly surprised. Jackson has no real iconic landmarks or spectacular sights, so the course goes mostly through residential neighborhoods and strip malls. However, the winding turns, hills, and changing landscapes manage to keep the 26.2 from being too mundane. I was blown away by how much the community really gets behind this race - lots of friendly people, from volunteers to normal people coming out to get the morning paper and greeting runners from their driveways. The organization is top-notch from course amenities to goody bags. The medal, while awesomely huge; it almost seems out-of-place on my shelf, as it is 3x the size of my other medals from big-name races (Chicago, Marine Corps, Philly, etc.). Given the time of the year, when they're aren't many options, this is a great marathon. I still prefer the big-city races, but this was definitely fun for a change of pace and to get out of the cold for a weekend.

Well done!!! Great Race!!

The race has everything but big-city crowds, and that's a good thing. Challenging course but that's OK. Great gifts and music. The race rocks!

5 Stars: Enough said!

This is the only race where the volunteers say, "Thank you" for running Jackson! Speaking of southern hospitality, this race has it. The course is challenging but great, the organization is outstanding, and the volunteers and police working the roads and aid stations go above the call of duty. Once the word gets out about this southern gem of a race, it is going to explode, so you might want to run it before that happens. The medal says it all; the race directors do not cut corners. The organization earns 5 stars on all accounts: the post-race concert, the Blues Crawl, and of course, the race itself.

Roller Coaster Marathon

This was my 31st marathon in 27th state and I enjoyed it tremendously. Yes, there are hills, lots of hills, and though many are not long, they do seem to go on forever. My only suggestion: there were a few points in the race where they could have done a better job of protecting the runners. One short section did not have cones up and there were a few times when I wished there were volunteers directing us. That being said, the organizers did a good job with water stops, and thanks to the many volunteers. There's nothing like running past an Elvis who is directing traffic. Registration was a breeze - there's not much of an expo but who cares, really? As mentioned by others, the swag, medal, food and entertainment were all great. The medal got my bag searched at the airport...! We lucked out with the weather this year; the storm hit on Sunday.

very hospitable race

From the organizers to the volunteers to the community to the other racers, I met some of the nicest, most helpful people in my life. The course, on the other hand, was anything but nice. Tough footing at times and hill after hill after hill throughout the course, though it was interesting and scenic. The expo was small but very nice and there was a large variety and quantity of food at the finish. The swag was among the best and the medal rivals Little Rock for size. Overall, a very good race.

Mississippi's Great Secret

Although I set a PR here, as the other comments said, this is probably not a PR course. The course was very scenic with many hills and a good portion was on one side of the road, which caused the curvature in the road to work on your legs. The course was very well supported with ample water stops and several GU handouts. They changed the policy after I registered and wouldn't allow a friend to pick up my packet; however, once this was pointed out, they were completely willing to work through it and even opened up race-day packet pick-up. I probably won't be back since I'm working on 50 states (this being #4), but this was an overall great experience and I encourage others to try this course. The finisher's medal was a little overkill. You couldn't ask for a friendlier bunch of people than the people of Mississippi!

My First Half: What a Challenge!

I'm a local, and I ran the Blues for my first half. Great organization including volunteers and race support. Being from here, I feel your pain regarding road complaints. We drive - and run - these daily, and they are rough. Believe it or not, they are better than they have been! My only beef (albeit a minor one) is that the course contains many brutal hills. That being said, this was my first and I'm sure that there are worse ones out there. I'm sure I'll do this half again next year, but will reserve my full for elsewhere.

Spectators and course support should be 10 STARS!!

THIS IS THE FRIENDLIEST EVENT (of ALL events, not just running) I HAVE EVER PARTICIPATED IN!!! Kudos, Jackson!! Which is good because the hills were relentless. The weather was beautiful, and the views were beautiful. The food was ok at the end, but the GOODY BAG was great. I may be the only runner in North America who likes cotton shirts - and these were high-quality! The course layout wasn't bad. The road slant was rough on my knees. I probably could have done without a long uphill finish. But again the support was so amazing that it was all worth it!!

Our first marathon; we had a great time!

My husband and I ran this course as our first marathon. It was definitely a challenging course with LOTS of hills. Sections of the run were through neighborhoods with huge old houses but the last couple of miles aren't in the greatest part of town. There were places where you had to watch where you stepped because the roads had potholes. Things I liked: The volunteers!!! They were amazing! Very friendly and supportive. The course gave a nice tour of Jackson and was well marked. There was more than enough water and Gatorade along the course. Things I did not like: The preferred hotels had arranged special rates but were very inflexible regarding late checkout. We stayed at the Marriott and the latest they could check us out was noon. If you plan on taking longer than 3.5 hours, stay somewhere else because by the time you get done, have something to eat and drink, and then walk back down, you don't have time for a shower. The Old Country Inn was the same way. Things I would change: Not enough port-o-lets! I saw three the whole time (granted, I was slow and they may have been picked up before I got there, but my husband finished two hours before me and he didn't see many either). The middle few miles had very little volunteer support. I felt it was a point in the race where I needed it and there were very few around. Overall, we had a great time and would recommend the race. The finisher's medals were awesome!

Decent race

This race is a good one considering it's only in its 4th year. There can be some improvements: Pasta dinner More food and vendor options at the expo I know the RD can't help this, but there were many bad parts to the roads Place total elevation information on the website; I knew there would be hills however they were relentless Add pace teams for half marathoners The neighborhoods were ran through were pretty quiet; it'd be nice to have more community involvement Positives: Course was very challenging; however, keep it! If people want flat, they should go to Houston or Chicago Nice touch with the bag, shirt and large medal Cool shirt; so what that it was cotton? Great pace teams Start and finish are within walking distance of several hotels The people who were on the course were kind, helpful, and thanked us for coming to their city! Overall this is a good race. It's worth the cost, and downtown Jackson should only continue to improve. Good job, Jackson. GRADE: B+.

Best support

I agree that maybe they fibbed a little on the course. The rolling hills did get old after awhile but there were none that would break your heart. The road surfaces were a little rough, but this country may have to get used to that. Keeps you on your toes. The police were the best I have ever seen. At one intersection the woman police officer was dancing to keep warm and singing encouragement to the runners. The packet pick up was easy. The host hotel was the best - very helpful and an easy walk to the start and finish line. The hotel had free water and fruit when you came. Last but not least were the bands. The music on the course was a lot of fun but the "Elvis" band at the finish had everyone dancing. The harmonica and Elvis glasses in the goody bag were a lot of fun too! If you want to do a "back to back," this and Mobile are the way to do it. Only a 230[mile ride between the two cities. A lot of Fifty Staters and Marathon Manics did them back to back.

H-I-L-L-Y!!!

So, I had read the comments from years past about the hills, but was totally unprepared for them. It was a great race to run. There were good spectators, and the police were pretty good. Some of the roads were pretty beat up. But again, the hills KILLED ME!!! If you are planning on running this race, make sure 2 of your training days involve hills. Also, the organizers could have had more info on the locations of the miles so that friends/family could meet the runners there for support. Overall, I recommend this race. JUST BE PREPARED FOR THE HILLS!!! (Have I made myself clear?)

Great race and a lot of FUN!!!

Congratulations on another successful race! I love the cotton t-shirt and finisher's medal. The expo is small but very nice. The music was great! The whole race is very well organized and the volunteers are terrific. The Blues Crawl was a big hit. I did not see the Blues Crawl schedule on the website; this would have been helpful. The post-race party was terrific, with plenty of food, music and beer! If you're going to run a race in MS, I strongly recommend the Blues Marathon. Seems like it keeps getting better each year! Great job!!!

Challenging, Well Supported

Not too big, and not too small. Lots of out-of-towners, which made it interesting. Weather was perfect. Medal was awesome. Entertainment post-race was excellent, as were the refreshments (including beer). Roads were not all that great and the hills were very challenging. The engraved harmonica and Blues CD in the goody bag were a nice touch. At the finish I would have segregated the lanes much earlier and a little more entertainment on the course would have been nice. All in all, great experience.

Great Southern Hospitality plus some hills

Great job by the organizers of the race. Terrific race swag, including a nice harmonica, Elvis glasses (complete with sideburns) and a great medal. I would have preferred a technical shirt rather than cotton. The course is a hilly challenge. The fans and volunteers were excellent. I will definitely be back.

Great run (but hilly for Mississippi.)

I've run all four of the MS Blues Marathons. It's grown into a great race. Not too big; not too small. Starts and ends downtown, with a handful of rolling hills. Nothing too steep, but Mississippi is pretty flat. I think they found every hill in the area, and put the course over them. Overall, a very nice race.

Great race! Must do! Awesome schwag!

Yes, it's hilly; yes, it's challenging; and YES, IT'S WORTH IT! I did this race as the first part of the double in conjunction with the First Light Marathon in Mobile. I loved every minute of it. Extremely well organized. Easy parking. Great atmosphere. Well manned and supplied aid stations. TONS of volunteers at every turn. And talk about a MEDAL! Holy moly, the medal is awesome - plus we got a t-shirt, bag and CD. Can't thank the City and people of Jackson enough. GREAT JOB! If you need MS, this is a must do!

Great, small, hilly marathon with great support!

My first marathon. Pretty hard course, from what everyone says. Just under 700 runners. Crowds were small, but were also very encouraging and very friendly. I even dropped a GU pack, and someone ran out, got it for me, and ran it to me. The medal is cool - big and heavy. I would have preferred a tech shirt instead of the cotton T-shirt they gave us.

Mississippi

I ran the half marathon and this was about my 30th half or full. The good: -Friendly volunteers and spectators -Well organized expo -Nice medal -Post-race food The bad: -Short-sleeve cotton t-shirt -Little communication after race signup -No clear marks for aid stations on course map -Tough, hilly course and the roads were terrible (almost as bad as New Orleans) -No organized pasta dinner... the food and service at the Marriott was awful -Jackson is dead on the weekend. Nothing is open downtown. Overall, the race was enjoyable and the Marriott was convenient (near the start/finish). The people are fantastic and make you feel welcome. The hilly course wasn't as big an issue for me, but the road conditions seemed to beat my legs up. Also, if you ran on the edge there was a definite decline. If you are trying to run the states, then this is the best race for Mississippi.

Challenging course but PR temps!

Yes, this year we lucked out tremendously. A winter blizzard of ice and snow hit Jackson within 24 hours after the marathon. God smiled on us. The starting temp was about 35 and the finish temp around 45. Sunny. Windy : 5-10 miles an hour, and it seemed to be more in your face until the last mile when I could feel it pushing me. Perfect PR temps! I could run forever in temps like these! I ran the inaugural marathon (2008), which had a flatter and more boring route. This year the race directors changed it to go through mostly residential areas - along tree-lined streets with houses ranging from small ranches to palatial 10-acre mansions. It's hard to find good scenery in the dormant wintertime but this route was as scenic as possible and made the marathon interesting. However, the road camber (mostly from right to left) was a problem. My left hip began to hurt, but the pain is gone as of Monday. And I thought the race organizers thoughtfully highlighted the rough spots on the roads. Did not see anyone fall. So you trade a flat, boring route for one that is much more beautiful, although more cambered. The hills seemed relentless but balanced the quads and the hamstrings well - and, after all, we are marathoners, aren't we? I would make only four suggestions: 1. Start the half-marathoners about 10 minutes behind the marathoners. 2. Give a tech shirt. The design was beautiful, but most runners don't wear cotton anymore. 3. Give a map of the course and location for parking in the handout. 4. Think about a pasta dinner. Many marathons this size encourage a school to provide and staff it with net proceeds going to the school. Great camaraderie for the marathoners. And start it early, at 5 p.m. The harmonica, a wonderful packet gift, was absolutely delightful. I only hope my wife can get a good set of earplugs when I get home. Thanks, Mississippi, for a memorable marathon!!

Super Friendly; Hard but Fun

I love the size of the race; I think I read that there were about 2,000 between the half and the full. The expo is small, but easy (almost no lines). Getting to the race and starting is also easy. No marathon is perfect, but this one is really nice. I listed a few positives and negatives below, but don't let the negatives scare you away. I will definitely run this again. THANK YOU to everyone involved! Good: -Governor Barbour was present at the start and the volunteers were wonderful throughout. -Great weather (I know this can change, as last year was really cold, but in general January in Mississippi has great running weather). -Very challenging course. It is hilly. Some certainly wouldn't consider this a positive, but there are enough flat courses out there, and this was nice. Difficult, but nice. -I know I repeat myself, but the best volunteers anywhere. Super friendly and helpful - just great people. Thank you. Bad: -There wasn't much crowd support. Most cheering was from volunteers and a few neighborhood associations. -Need more police/volunteers at some of the intersections. All of the big ones were covered with police, and most drivers were very understanding, but a larger volunteer presence would have been good. -I know the organizers can't control everyone, but please try harder to encourage slow people to start near the end. I am slow (4:30 marathon), but it still took about a mile of zigging/zagging around walkers. Perhaps have a separate start for walkers or for the half-marathon. Maybe just 10 minutes later or something similar. -As mentioned by another, PLEASE provide a map of the course at the expo. And the online map has horrible resolution; please improve that for next year.

Great experience overall

The expo was small, but never to be missed. I went back a second time just to listen to the rolling cast of singers and bands performing. Awesome. Super friendly people of Jackson, both around town and along the course. Their encouragement was certainly appreciated by this runner. It was especially cool to have the governor at the race start. Host hotel (Marriott) and all main hotels are very close, but quite rigid on noon checkout times (come on, guys). They worked hard to accommodate runners' diets for race-evening and breakfast, soliciting input from runners on their needs. You can't do much about the rolling course, but some of the streets were pretty pitted/rutted and I slowed my pace to take more care. "Moderately challenging" is how I'd describe it. Overall, I think this is a must-do race. I'm thinking of signing up again in '12 to spend more days in Jackson!

Southern Hospitality!

I ran the 2011 half marathon and truly enjoyed the experience. The course is hilly and challenging but fun. The start was well organized and the finish line was easily negotiated. Great swag in the goody bag (harmonica, Elvis glasses, t-shirt, CD of the blues). The finisher's medal is classy and substantial. Lots of drinks, food, and fruit at the finish tent. Blues bands along the course and at the finish were a nice touch.

This course will have you singing the blues...

First off, I want to the volunteers for doing an amazing job marshaling the course and traffic. Now to the good, the bad, and the ugly. The good: Most downtown hotels are within walking distance of the start/finish. If you stay at host hotel (Marriott), you will be just 3-4 short blocks away. The hotel has a nice restaurant that offers special dinner options to runners and is open early for breakfast too. They also offer special rates. I highly recommend you stay at the host hotel. Moreover, the finisher's medal is huge if you like that sort of thing. The bad: Although race director does a good job showcasing the city and some very nice neighborhoods, the roads are pretty bad. The camber is tough in some parts. I felt like I was running sideways at times. The food at the end was blah.... The ugly: Traffic... needs to be improved. Overall, it's ok but it's not great. If you are a 50-Stater, I'd recommend this one for MS. Also, this course is not for the faint of heart! Very challenging...

Great fan support, great medal, course is tough

Nice, small race with great support from the locals. I must have been told 30 times during the race, "Thank you for coming." Organization was solid, the race started on time, and the expo was small but the great volunteers made it smooth. Also, a fantastic finisher's medal and the governor came to the start of the race. The course was tough - rolling hills the whole way (none were that bad, but they were constant and wore you out). Here's what they could improve: -cotton race t-shirt was disappointing -no maps at the expo and the map on the website was hard to follow -they used chips instead of d-tag -no organized pasta dinner. There were plenty of people staying at the Marriott if they would have had it there -roads in MS are terrible (can't do anything about that) but there was a mile or so on onramps to highway -half marathoners who were walking clogged up the last few miles (although they were great at cheering me on)

Frigid Marathon - Warm Experience

As most marathoners, we were looking for the 10-day cold snap to break the day before the race. Instead, with a 17 F start, the race started off with a warm sun and no breeze to speak of... so the first 5-6 miles went well (the year before, some of the local racers told me the start temp was in the mid-70's - so the "average" of 47 F for Jackson in mid-January, makes sense... just watch out for the standard deviation). It clouded up and a breeze kicked in around mile 8 and for the next 15 miles - so the sweat started to solidify. BUT, I can't adequately describe how friendly the race monitors and traffic police were! - the best effort of my 25+ marathons. Every intersection was staffed by a volunteer who greeted you and thanked you for coming!! (I wouldn't have blamed them for being home in a warm bed!) The course route was above average for a metro run and the traffic control was superb! Rest stops were well spaced and staffed (brrr, it was cold for them) - but they made you feel welcome and special). The Marriott, a few blocks from the start/finish, accommodated the marathon runners and allowed for late post-race departures. I'd recommend this race to anyone. Nice JOB, BCBS of Mississippi and the Mississippi Track Club!

Well organized despite freezing weather

Wonderful event despite temps in the single digits with the wind chill. Layering worked well for this So Cal native. Enthusiastic welcoming volunteers and spectators showed their true southern hospitality in such adverse weather conditions. Great expo with wonderful music, best swag (guitar medal, blues tee-shirt, engraved harmonica) and deals on apparel of any marathon I've been to. Loved exploring the delta blues towns and Civil War sites (Vicksburg) nearby. Intimidating hills last five miles. Thanks, Mississippi.

Definitely cold, but a great race

I didn't notice the hills, but I think that may be because I was freezing my butt off. I had my worst marathon clock time ever, but an awesome time on the course. All the volunteers and police were great. Only 2 bands showed. Jackson State University drum corps, you rock! This would have been an exceptional marathon if it were 50 degrees, like it usually is. Do not stay at the Roberts-Walthall. Very bad experience.

This is worth not trying for a PR on

Course is pretty good; it's a typical southern Midwest marathon. You see some beautiful neighborhoods, they do their best to avoid uninteresting transitions, and there are enough hills to make you wish you trained for more hills! The race is very well organized. The staff was ready for the challenge this year with the weather and pulled it off spectacularly. I backed off a little this year because the cold and the hills totally demotivated me, but I really enjoyed this experience. Not my best finish time, but a very positive experience! Unfortunately, there were not many bands out there on this very cold day, but I think that may have been more due to the weather.

Chilly but exhilarating run!!

What a wonderful experience. First off, I'm from Minnesota so I'm used to the cold temps. However, even I don't usually run outside when the temps go below 20! Despite the weather, I had an all-out blast. The volunteer support was outstanding. Everyone kept thanking me for coming out - I loved that. We stayed at the host hotel, which was very accommodating of us runners and so close to the start/finish line. The start was really cool, with the Jumbo-tron and the soldier countdown and the national anthem. The only issue I had here was the runners' starting gate. It was a little confusing, but fortunately I was towards the front. I enjoyed the hills on the course. I had been training for them, and I got my PR that day!! The police did an outstanding job of patrolling the course. I've never seen so many officers on a course before. It made me feel very safe. The finish line area was good as well, with plenty of food and music (and heated tents!). Thanks so much for making my trip to your state a very memorable one!

Definitely felt the "Blues"

This was my 8th marathon. I don't have many complaints about the Blues Marathon, but I do have a couple. I do think it's a bit pricey. My MAJOR complaint is that, when I did finally finish the marathon - which took me an hour longer than my average marathon time - I had spent 5 hours out there running in 17-degree snow flurries. I walked into the food tent to see the LAST 4 slices of pizza being carried away by a volunteer who didn't even run. I watched as they moved the table back and carried the empty boxes away. All that was left was COLD ham and cheese and plain bagels. I CANNOT understand how, if 600 people out of the 2,000 who signed up didn't even show up to run, they could possibly RUN OUT of pizza!!!

hilly, but fantastically friendly

The course was challenging, as advertised - generally picturesque running through neighborhoods, but there is a somewhat unpleasant out-and-back on the side of a highway. The volunteers and fans were amazing, especially considering that standing and handing out semi-frozen cups of water and Gatorade in sub-freezing temps couldn't have been comfy. They did what they could to minimize ice from dropped water cups on the course that froze over - never saw that before! Volunteers and course marshals were all friendly, positive, and welcoming - they even thanked us for running! I don't think I ever saw a split clock at any of the mile markers, so be forewarned if that matters to you. As mentioned elsewhere, the post-race food and warm tent were wonderful (until stepping out into the cold!). The medal, tee, and harmonica were all fun and different "swag." But the best "swag" was the post-race party - designed as a "Blues crawl." A trolley picked us up from the Marriott and ran a loop that took us to several different Blues clubs for live music and fun. No cost for the ride or any club covers - we had a great time and met a lot of other fun marathoners. I loved it! The only downside to downtown was the relative lack of nearby (walkable) open businesses on weekends - restaurants, shops, etc. One find: Hal and Mal's was worth the walk and getting lost for; consider getting a car. The old capitol building/museum was walkable, as was the art museum. The Marriott was great. They had fruit and coffee out before the race, and coffee/hot chocolate out after. Oh - and there was a live Blues band at the expo, too! Awesome! Other than the hills and cold (won't hold Jackson responsible for either), it was a great marathon experience - small, friendly, and fun.

Best Half Experience I Can Recall

This was my 10th half marathon and my second Blues Half, and the more I think about it, I believe it is my favorite race experience. Last year's race was way hot, so I tip my hat to organizers who had to do a near 180 to keep us all comfortable in 17-degree weather. I stayed at the Roberts Walthall Hotel just two blocks from the start, and the staff went out of their way to accommodate our needs. I was even asked what they should put out for breakfast and when runners would want to eat! As for the shirt being cotton, that's what they gave us at Grandma's in Duluth, MN, three years ago, so I didn't mind. My favorite tune on the CD is "Hip Shakin' Woman." Can't wait for next year's event!

Well done once again in 3rd year

As a Jackson area resident, I've had the privilege of running in all 3 Blues Marathons. For the most part, they just keep getting better and better. Finisher's medal was the best version yet. The slightly altered course was still challenging but fair. The cold was well managed, with heaters, tents, and warmer post-race food options. The addition of miniature sports-topped water bottles was FANTASTIC for those of us who were wondering how to get fluids without soaking our gloves! As a no-frills kind of guy, I would be willing to trade the swanky packet pick-up bag, cotton shirt, harmonica, and CD for a technical shirt and lower entry fee. Nice job, BC/BS.... I'll be an early bird registrant for next year's 4th installation of this event!!

MS Blues exceeded expectations!

I agree with the praise noted below: great goody bag and medal, nice pre-race tents with heat trying to keep runners warm, VERY appreciative volunteers, plentiful aid stations, and nice shower facilities after. The marathon was an excellent tie in for visiting the Delta Blues region. The whole experience left me with the desire to visit more of MS. Race course suggestion: course was limited mainly to downtown, suburbs and highway. Please, less highway, and more historic areas. Post-race suggestion: advertise the Blues Club tour on Saturday night ahead of time (I found out about it at the expo, and didn't see anything on the website). I'd already made plans and couldn't attend.

cold, but warm volunteers and great organization

Thanks for a great marathon! (This was my 22nd marathon.) Despite the frigid cold, the volunteers were out there thanking the runners for choosing Mississippi and providing hydration. (Gatorade tastes much better when it is ice cold!) Really enjoyed the drum line at Jacksonville State University and the bands braving the cold. The harmonica and CD in the goody bag made for a great surprise! Course was hilly, but I think everyone was too busy concentrating on the cold. Pizza, beans and rice and sandwiches at the finish were much appreciated - as was the warm tent with more bands. Thanks for the great organization and great experience.

Great Race with Strong Support!

I ran the half-marathon and was very impressed by the organization and volunteer support, especially on such a cold day. Parking for the race and expo was easy. Yes, there were hills - not too steep, but continuous throughout. Great job, Jackson!

Well done but challenging event

We complained about the heat last year.... Be careful what you ask for. Wow, it was cold. I'm assuming next year the weather will be just right. Guitar-shaped medal: A+. Harmonica in goody bag: A+. Jackson State Sonic Boom drum line: A+. People in Eastover with fire pits by the street: A++. Volunteers in 17-degree weather: A++. Icicles in my eyebrows in Mississippi: unforgettable. Thanks for a great event.

Chilly race!

Wasn't looking forward to the cold, but organizers did all they could to make this race a fun experience. I ran the half last year and this year was my first full. I know they've already shortened it, but I wish Lakeland Drive could be eliminated completely from the course. I hate running next to the traffic and fumes and very few spectators come to that part of the course. Other than that, I had a blast. Will definitely run it again.

Great, hilly course; wonderful people

A wonderful marathon on an absolutely freezing day. I ran the half last year, and so thouroughly enjoyed it that I caught the marathon bug. This is my second marathon. The people are so incredibly friendly and supportive. With wind chill, it was single digits temperature-wise at race start and didn't warm up much from that. It also snowed a little bit. For a race in Mississippi, that is crazy. Even with that, there were great spectators. The Jackson State University drum line was my favorite. Very dedicated. Additionally, the police did an amazing job with traffic, encouraged the runners and even had a smile on their faces. The course is a little bit hilly, but nothing too severe. It started and ended downtown, had one somewhat boring out-and-back along a busy street (but cars were kept well away), and then ran through some beautiful Jackson neighborhoods. There were plenty of water/gel stations and many even had ice. :) The slushy, half-frozen Gatorade was actually quite nice. The finish was great, with many volunteers welcoming you. They helped cover you with Mylar blankets, placed the medal around your neck, took your timing chip off and handed you some water all while congratulating you. To be so enthusiastic after volunteering and standing in 20-degree weather for 4-5 hours was truly amazing. I should have been congratulating them. Compared to last year, the spectators and music were sparse (but it was also about 40 degrees colder than last year). Only two negatives were the paucity of music (it is the MS Blues Marathon, after all) and a little confusion concerning parking. No one at the expo knew anything about where to park. As it turned out, there was plenty of parking within 500 feet of the start and finish, but it would have been nice to know this ahead of time. Post-race food and drink were plentiful and excellent, especially the red beans and rice. Overall, a very good race, well put together by great, dedicated people. Jackson is my home town, so I am a bit biased, but I am also incredibly proud. Thank you to everyone for a great race. I will be back.

Excellent race, especially considering the weather

I really liked this marathon. Though it was 17 degrees when we started, the crowd support was pretty solid. All of the spectators were really friendly and in great moods for being in the midst of an arctic blast. They even had a drum line at mile 2! The course was relatively flat until mile 20; then it became a bit difficult. It's a good challenge, so be prepared! I loved the harmonica, and the shirt's pretty cool. The race medal is also pretty unique (in the shape of a guitar), which I like. If you're traveling from afar, it would be a good idea to rent a car. There are only a few restaurants in downtown Jackson (which are usually closed between 3 and 6) and no grocery stores/convenience stores and the like. Plus the surrounding area is pretty. Finish line food included pizza, red beans and rice, sandwiches, bagels, soup... good stuff!!!

What a GREAT event

What an event! The start temp was 9 degrees with the wind chill. All of the volunteers were spectacular and were very appreciative to all of the runners for choosing Jackson to run a marathon. There wasn't a single aid station or course monitor who didn't thank me for coming to Jackson. The course is slightly challenging but goes through some nice neighborhoods. The goody bag has contained a blues CD every year, but this year the race added a harmonica. The medal is also nice. The race is very organized. I have had a great time at all three of the MS Blues Marathons and i'll be back next year.

Cold Blues, but Still Good!

The course left a bit to be desired, being quite hilly and on a very cold day, with a bit of ice and cold winds along the way. But there were parts that were pretty, and it was quite well put on. The expo was fantastic - definitely not too big, but still space for a stage, with lots of comfy chairs in which to hear speakers, and great music! The shirt is pretty cool and the harmonica that came with the cool goody bag is also awesome! Race morning was super easy to navigate; parking and getting to the start were no problem! Once we were moving, all seemed to go well, and the folks on the course were very kind and helpful - despite having to stand in that frigid weather! Post-race was also fairly nice: a small tent with some warm coffee, and some fruit and bagels. Overall, not a bad performance for the MS Blues Marathon.

Friendliness took away the chill (well, sort of!)

I think there were more volunteers than marathoners, and every volunteer I encountered cheerfully offered assistance and thanked me for participating. As a slow runner, I was especially appreciative of these folks for enduring the cold temps for hours. Their support and the event organization earned high marks in my opinion. No surprises about the hills, but the course was a bit dull as it followed highways for many miles. However, everything was well marked, and traffic was controlled throughout. I loved the blues music at the expo, great schwag, and the trolley pub crawl post-race party. Stayed at the host hotel and was happy with the location, quiet, and extended meal hours for runners. Excellent experience in Jackson... despite the frigid temps!

What a surprise!

First off, I am from Mississippi and now live in the St. Louis area... so I always wanted to do at least a half in my home state. At the same time, I was a little worried. Jackson is not always the most organized of cities and I was unaware of there being much of a running community there. Well, I had a GREAT time. I showed up the night before to an expo that had plenty of parking and was well organized. No, it did not have a 100 vendors, but they have live blues music playing. Cold race day, at 21 degrees. But I have never been to a half or full that was so easy to get around. I got a hotel that was a 10-minute drive to the start line. I arrived at the event at 6:20 for the 7 a.m. start. I was able to park on the same block as the start line, free!!! If that were not enough, they had planned for the weather and had two large party tents equipped with full-siding... inside: live blues music and HEATERS! YEAH! Both were fewer than 50 yards from the start line. Very nice. Now, if you dont like hills - dont come to this event. Very hilly. Also, not a large crowd, but they were all super nice and all cheered. Don't expect thousands cheering you along, but expect friendly groups along the way. The finish got you a great medal and plenty of food! The red beans and rice were awesome. After some cold water for me, there was plenty of hot coffee and chocolate. A better selection of food than you will get at Memphis or Chicago. KUDOS! I was very happy to say I was from Mississippi and proud of the people from Jackson that put it on. One or two fewer hills would have been nice, but oh well!!! All of this and a harmonica engraved with the logo of the race!

Great, friendly race that is well organized.

It was cold, unusual weather for MS, even in January. Course could be improved by running same course only clockwise. The big hills would be early and leaving smaller hills at the end. Great support on the course. Ran the full this year; ran half previous two years. Plan to run again next year.

Can you say, "Brrrrrrrr!"

This is the second time I participated in the Mississippi Blues Marathon. In 2008 I ran the half, and this year, 2010, I ran the whole. I enjoyed it so much the first time that I could not wait to come back. The course was challenging, but beautiful. The volunteers were outstanding. Looking forward to doing this again in 2011; I hope the temp will be above freezing next year.

Great marathon experience

What a great experience! Expo was small but well organized and very friendly. The goody bags were awesome: great t-shirt, engraved harmonica, and blues cd. There was even live blues playing at the expo. At the start there was a warm-up tent (since it was so cold) with live blues playing, which really got you ready to run. There seemed to be no porta-potties around, which was weird, but after the race we found some sort of hidden. They could have made these more visible or at least announced where they were. No one knew when we asked. Bag check was not made clear on the instructions, so maybe a little more info in this would help some. The starting line was a little weird; I'm not sure if everyone knew which way we were heading as it started in the middle of a big intersection. Not a big deal at all since the race was fairly small anyway. The course was very hilly, but all in all, I loved it. For every uphill there was a downhill. Some great scenery of the city, especially the older estates. The volunteers were the best and most friendly of any race I have ever done. Great aid stations. Not a big deal for me, but my wife would have liked to see more porta-potties at the aid stations. Most just had one, which if there had been a line would have cost a lot of time. We ended up running into a Shell station along the route. The course gets hillier toward the end, but I still loved it. I was a little disappointed with the finish line; we took over 5 hours in finishing, but still... the announcer was saying nothing and crowd support had dwindled. It was 27 degrees, so anyone who stayed was awesome - not a big deal. Post-race warm up tents had great food, including sandwiches, though I heard there was pizza earlier. Best part about this race was the people - both the volunteers and runners we met were some of the greatest people ever. All in all, I loved, loved, loved it. I'd do it again and would recommend this race to everyone.

Well organized race given the weather conditions

Race (half marathon) was well done with a few exceptions. Having ice chips in the water is not a good thing for runners. I picked up my race packet after registering 6 weeks earlier and found only a t-shirt and race number. My racing compatriots had CD's, harmonica's and other amenities. That should be rectified. Music tent should have had heaters, as the blues were excellent but the environment frigid. Volunteers and support staff were excellent in their jobs and support. The hills and course was very challenging, and the road surface was poor. Had great empathy for those marathoners 2-6 hours out in the cold. Medals were nice, though the t-shirts could be upgraded for a race of this caliber (i.e., long-sleeve, tech material).

Awesome Support

The volunteers at this event were top notch. It was like having a big Mississippi welcome mat, with each supporter thanking the runners for running. Such hospitality! There was plenty of aid, from water/Gatorade to power gel (or was it GU?). The hills were no surprise - they were clearly indicated on the elevation chart - but were a bummer nonetheless. The cold was a real challenge.

True Southern Hospitality

The warmth of the spectators and volunteers more than compensated for the frigid temperatures on the day of the race. Coming from New England, I never expected it to be colder in Jackson than it was in CT, but it was. Despite that, the spectators and volunteers cheerfully came out to cheer us on, man the water stations, and direct traffic. The course was hilly, but none of the hills were long or particularly steep (more just rolling). My only complaint is that there were no clocks along the course to check the time (even at the halfway point). Unfortunately, the cold prevented most of the bands from coming out, so that was disappointing... but we can't control Mother Nature. The event was well organized and parking just 2 blocks from the start was a cinch (which was nice when it's 17 degrees and I could wait in the car until 5 minutes before the start).

Super friendly volunteers and pretty course

The volunteers and police officers were the friendliest I've ever encountered!! I could have done without the out-and-back along the highway, but the rest of the course was pretty, though hilly. Loved running through the neighborhoods. No yellow vest in my packet. Thank you, Jackson, for a wonderful race!

Great Race

I honestly considered dropping out due to the temp because I had never run a race when it was that cold. I am so glad that I didn't. I've only done 6 half marathons, but this was by far one of the best races I have done. The course was a little more challenging than I thought it would be, but so what? I know how to train for next year. The organizers and volunteers are to be commended. The hospitality, accommodations, volunteers on the route, traffic, residents on the route coming out of their houses to cheer you on - all just made for a well "put together" event. Top notch!!!! Thanks, Jackson....

Wonderful from Start to Finish

You won't PR here. Hills roll from mile 4-9, and then again from 14 until the end, and the three or four big hills on Old Canton Road and State Street in the last three miles are huge challenges (at least they were for me). However, you will be pleasantly surprised by the beauty of Jackson, especially running by Belhaven College and in the neighborhood north of Lakeland Drive, and the start/finish area by the old State Capitol is fun. Great post-race food (hot food really came in handy after a whole marathon under 25 degrees), and a GREAT Saturday night trolley for runners, carrying us around to several blues venues. Outstanding volunteers smiling and thanking us for coming out, standing out there in the freezing cold - at least we got to run and stay "warm." I am working my way through the 50 states, so I won't be back here for a while, but it's an extremely well-run race from expo to post-race party, and I would highly recommend this whether you need a race to cross off Mississippi or you're just looking for a mid-winter challenge.

COLD & Hilly

At race start, it was 18 degrees with a "feels like" temperature of 12. I think it may have actually gotten colder during the race rather than warmer. This was my 3rd half marathon and definitely the most miserable weather. I don't think that is typical of Jackson, Mississippi though. The race organization was phenomenal!! At one point in the race, there was a fairly large-sized water run-off (coming from maybe a busted pipe or something) that had frozen. It had been salted and there were race organizers before the ice letting you know it was coming up, and on each side of the ice patch pointing and making sure everyone got across the path safe. They were also amazing at pointing out ice patches at water/aid stations from people throwing half full cups on the road. All in all, a great race... even if I did freeze!!

True Southern Hospitality

Thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The expo was small but very well organized. Very cold day (17 at the start); there's nothing like a Gatorade slushy and skating through the aid stations, but the volunteers and occasional spectator were very warm. I have never been thanked so many times for coming to a race. There were a few hills up jefferson at about mile 5, and some rollers near the end with an uphill finish (ouch). Found several good people to run with, especially in the 4-hour pace group (congrats to all). Scouted out an Irish pub (Jefferson and Fortification) for a great brunch/beer afterward. Highly recommended. The best was the warm food tent at the finish, with great soup and cold beer. Although there was not much to do or see in downtown Jackson before the race, the "blues crawl" afterward makes up for it. The trolley takes you around from hotel to 3-4 bars/clubs. The first two were marginal, but the last place was awesome. I would run again just to hear Vasti Jackson on the guitar.

Mississippi Blues Rocks!

The Mississippi Blues Marathon is an exceptionally high-quality event focused on catering to the details that runners appreciate. The expo, while small, was well organized and smooth. The t-shirt was great, the goody bag just raised the bar (with a cool bag, a blues CD, and a harmonica!), and the hospitality was great. The race itself is a challenging hilly course, as advertised. The volunteers are well trained to provide an exceptional running experience. I loved everything about this marathon (except the final hill!). They even had a HEATED food tent at the finish line since it was very cold this year. It is a great event that I highly recommend.

Made me proud to be a Mississippian!

Boy was I proud to run this race as a Mississippian! This is my first half-marathon. The hills were a bit challenging, but who doesn't like a challenge? I really enjoyed running through downtown Jackson and especially passing the college campuses. The musical entertainment before, during, and after the race was great. The volunteers, as well as the police directing traffic, were superb. I have read a few other comments complaining about fans. Umm... did you forget how cold it was? From the organizers, to the volunteers, fans, and fellow racers - thank you for giving me such a wonderful experience on my first of many half/full marathons!

Great experience even for a novice!

I ran the half-marathon. Pros: fabulous volunteers, great post-race food, very well-organized packet pickup and race, great looking medal. Cons: the street conditions were bad except on Metro Parkway (newer pavement there), there's not enough spectators along course, and they could use more music along the course. Worth the effort! Will probably run again, depending on weather. It was bitterly cold!

Going to Jackson

This was my first marathon with real hills, but still thought it was amazing! Really got a chance to meet and establish friendships with other runners on this one (which led me to my PR). Thanks to Mike from Illinois for pushing me!!! The pub crawl was a fantastic touch! Considering the cold weather cut down the number of spectators and music on the course, the trolley to all of the blues bars brought the local flavor and music back into the overall experience! And, another chance to meet and chat with other runners. Thank you to Vernsey for the company and running advice!

Glad I chose Mississippi Blues!

Real nice marathon. Down-to-earth, friendly run. I gave the course a 4, because I personally didn't care for the highway section, but we have to run somewhere. Organization get a 5 - TOP NOTCH! Spectators and volunteers were the best, braving the cold like that for us runners. THANK YOU! I won't comment on weather, because we get what we get, and we all have to deal with it. The electric guitar "Star Spangled Banner" version was great. I was extremely impressed with the start and video sendoff from the troops in the "First Wave" in Iraq. Thank you so much for keeping us safe! The drum line was unbelievable; the musicians on the course were spectacular. Water and gel stops went perfect. Port-o-lets were sufficient, although a few more would ease the mind. Food and drink at the end was awesome along with the band. We did the night tour and went to a few of the clubs for the blues bands playing. If you missed it, sorry. It was worth the trip! This is one marathon that you need to do! You won't be disappointed. This was my 17th marathon, and I will be back some day! Even though I was sick, I had a blast! One more note: It's always sad when a runner goes down. I didn't know or meet him, but Mr. Chris Brown, rest in peace my friend. We won't forget you. Show us the good trails when we all meet again.

The friendliest marathon I've run yet!

I knew that this wouldn't be a PR course, what with the rolling hills at the beginning and the ups and downs of Old Canton Road and State Street at the end, but my quest through all 50 states brought me here anyway. The hospitality tent at the start with the great music helped us warm up a bit before taking off in 11-degree wind chill. Jefferson Street and the neighborhood northeast of Ridgewood and Lakeland were beautiful - great distractions from the snow flurries. The best features here were the volunteers - they were friendly and outgoing even though the temperature never got above 28 - and the cool schwag, which included a harmonica, a neat T-shirt, and a blues CD. There was a blues festival Saturday night, complete with a trolley to haul us around. I would run this race again if I weren't headed through all of the states, and I know it won't be that cold again in 2011. This marathon will only keep improving.

Friendliest Cold Day in my 50-State Quest!

Like the comment below says, you should be so proud of your marathon. I fully expected to see unmanned aid stations and intersections due to the extreme temps, but no, all were fully staffed, with smiling and friendly faces. I stayed at the Marriott; it had clean rooms and was within walking distance of everything. Pasta at Sal and Mookies Excellent and inexpensive. I walked over to the small history museum; I was only the 3rd visitor of the day and again was greeted with warmth. I did not rate the course highly, as it was just ok - highway running is never really pretty and there were few spectators - but I did enjoy the houses with the fire pits blazing and the kids bundled up cheering us onward. Yes there were lots of rolling hills, but I train for hills, and it's no big deal. The course is honestly represented. A great medal too, and while the shirt is cotton and appealing design that carries over to the bag, too. Even the SW flight home out of Jackson talked about the runners, and the winner and number 2 man were both on my flight home, making it a more special end to the day. Overall, as a city, you put on a great race, and you should be proud of your efforts. Well done!

It was really COLD!!! However, everyone (volunteers, runners, spectators) was cheerful and supportive. I've never been to the south before, the entire town was extremely friendly. The hills were brutal! It seemed as if you were always heading up or down a hill; there was very little flat running.

Friendly, fun and freezing!

Like many others, I booked this one as a warm winter-time race. After all, how cold can it be in Mississippi in January? Answer: bone-chillingly cold. But the cold was more than offset by the warmth of the staff and volunteers - big enough to have great organization and community support without being so large that you are just another number. Great giveaways, friendly folks, plenty of food and drink at the end; all well organized and fully staffed despite the unseasonably frigid temperatures! Kudos to the downtown Marriott for being the best race hotel we've stayed at!

Wonderful Hospitality in Jackson!

A starting temperature of 17 degrees with single-digit wind chills was on everyone's mind on race morning, but that did not deter the large number of neighbors, spectators and volunteers from offering support, drinks, advice about icy spots on the course, and heartfelt care to all of the runners (amazingly over half of the racers came from out of state, and the neighbors repeatedly thanked us for coming to their race). The course was a bit hilly early on and then really was tough the final 5 miles, but the combo of the support, great-looking give-aways, post-race food, and a desire by the race committee to make this race top notch overshadowed the hills and frigid temperatures. This was my first visit to Mississippi, and I could not have asked for a better welcoming.

Every single volunteer along the course thanked me for coming to Mississippi to run - where else do you get that? Even Mississippi runners were thanking out-of-state runners for coming to Mississippi. After watching the wonderful course monitors and volunteers standing out there all morning in frigid temps, I won't complain about the hills. This is an outstanding event, with the best-looking medal of my 55 marathon medals, great food afterwards, tremendous organization - the list goes on. It's not the easiest course out there, but I'd come back again on a warmer day.

Great volunteers!

Beginning temps were in the upper teens with wind chills in the single digits. However this marathon had to have the most appreciative volunteers I have ever encountered. They all thanked us over and over again throughout the course for coming to Mississippi to run the marathon. These volunteers endured temperatures that were below freezing to hand us water and Gatorade that had a layer of ice in the cups. Tough job - what a great crew!! Note: We could have had more porta-potties, and I didn't get a finisher's shirt.

Race day was COLD (20)! However the volunteers and organization were outstanding. This was my 27th marathon and by far the friendliest race. The volunteers braved the frigid weather with a smile on their faces and every single one of them thanked me for coming to Jackson to run the race. All aid stations were well supported and the traffic was well managed. One of the best values for give-aways - blues CD, harmonica, race shirt, and good food (and beer) at the end. Only point of caution is that the course is hilly at the start and really hilly at the end.

Another good job. Thanks, Blue Cross.

I had to settle for the half this year, after doing the whole last year (shin splints and many other excuses). First, I was glad to see that my time got recorded correctly, since I signed up for the whole, and turned back at the last minute due to physical limitations and only did the half. Please order up some less humid weather next year. The volunteers were awesome - everybody got first-class treatment. Packet pick up was smooth. The entertainment was great, especially post-race. My yellow vest zipper was broken when I got it, but I didn't really care since I doubt I would ever wear it anyway. I loved the tech shirt the year before. Blue Cross is to be commended for stepping up and making this happen. Thanks! It's first-class all the way

If you're going to run Mississippi, do it here!

Being a native Mississippian, I was excited about running in my home state; in fact, we ran by the hospital where I was born! The pros: Volunteers, volunteers, volunteers. More volunteers than you could shake a stick at, and the nicest people around. There was no confusion about where to go next. They ran the expo smoothly, and thanked us profusely for running. The course was completely closed off by plenty of police, who were incredibly nice, too. Sporadic course support, but some, toward the end, were handing out bananas, oranges, etc., in front of their houses. There was one group, right around BCBS headquarters, that really gave you that jolt you needed. Some of the course was beautiful, winding through historic districts and downtown. Blues CD and the backpack/goody bag were awesome, as was the music at the expo and after the race. Plenty of gel, Gatorade, and water. Cons: This course was tough, particularly those miles from around 15 on. LOTS of hills. I didn't particularly care for the day-glo yellow vest that came with the goody bag; I had to purchase a technical tee that I'd actually wear. And, I actually liked the volunteers' shirts better than the tech tees. More music along the course (along the likes of Memphis or Nashville) would be a great addition. Also, there were no clocks at all on the course, or anyone yelling times, so be sure to bring your watch if you want to pace yourself. All in all, it's a good experience. I don't know that I'll go back (at least to that particular course), but if you live in Mississippi or want to cross it off your list, it's definitely worth it!

What a wonderful surprise

I grew up in Jackson, MS and, quite frankly, didn't think I would enjoy running a marathon there. (You can't go home again!) I was wrong! The course had rolling hills (NO, those definitely were not hills - come to Birmingham and you'll see) and flats. The race was very well organized - offering GREAT vests in the race packet, along with a blues CD - and the volunteers thanked me for running! That was a first! If large crowd support is important to you, go to Chicago or New York; otherwise, MS Blues Marathon is a wonderful surprise! I would recommend it to anyone and will run it again!

up, down, up, down in the south

The support and enthusiasm of the volunteers was actually very amazing. I put Mississippians on my top friendliest list. This was a huge help when one is tired. The expo was well organized. I just wish that race directors would give out maps that are actually to scale (a pet peeve of mine); it is impossible to use most maps from any marathon as an actual street guide on race morning. And they should have warned about the streets in many parts being very, very sloped and very potholed and in poor shape. I had to pay more attention to the street instead of the scenery. Otherwise, it was a good challenge - hilly indeed. The post-race area was well stocked. And the free massage at the yoga shop was great.

Nice people, so-so course

The pre-race expo was well organized and moved quickly, the goody bag was decent (although I don't wear vests very often), and pre-race instructions were thorough. Race-day parking was a little vague. Not enough porta-potties (of all the marathons I've done, Disney World is the only one that had no porta-potty lines). Course was hilly, but that was a known and it gave it some challenge. Hills were frequent, but none more than 1/4 - 1/2 mile long at the most. Course was well-marked with excellent traffic control, and there were friendly volunteers along the entire route. A good portion of the marathon route was an out-and-back along a larger highway connecting strip malls. The scenery for most of the route was not especially memorable. Aid stations were very adequate, but not overabundant. Crowds were light. The marathon field was small, with fewer than 500 runners. Even finish line crowds were small, albeit enthusiastic. After-race food was good and plentiful, and there was BEER, which is always fun. I'm glad to have done it, but I think once is enough for this venue.

Top-notch marathon.

Best small marathon I've done. Terrific organization and support, great music, and plenty of post-race food. Lots of parking near the combined start/finish area. Plenty of rolling hills to mix it up a bit. None too long or big to present a challenge. Nice to have the variety of ups/downs/flats. This is a must-run for those who enjoy the small marathon setting.

Marathon With Potential

First, I will begin with positive aspects. Volunteers were friendly and traffic control was really good. The music at the expo was fantastic! There was plenty of food when I finished after five hours. Pizza, delicious sandwiches, and a Pepsi - what more could a runner want? Shuttle service from host hotel was helpful. The host hotel was very nice and within walking distance of the start and finish. Possible improvements before 2010: It would have been nice if the hotel had an airport shuttle since round trip fare was around $60. I was also surprised that the host hotel did not have a restaurant. For those of us who did not have private transportation, the expo was a little far for walking the day before the marathon. I liked the volunteer shirt better than the vest. In most of my 55 marathons large and small, approaching the finish line has always been a big rush with a cheering crowd. There were very few spectators near the finish line when I finished. Thanks to the director and his staff for pulling off a good marathon. It definitely takes a village for a marathon to be successful.

Spectacular organization; fun race!

No detail was overlooked in organizing this race. Everything went smoothly from the packet pick-up to the finish line. I loved the bags and vests given out to participants. The course is hilly but well-staffed with friendly, encouraging volunteers and well stocked with water, Gatorade, and gels. There was an adequate number of porto-potties as well. Even though, there was 5-mile boring stretch from mile 13-18, at least it was flat. Just about every marathon I've run has a stretch like that. Great food and music at the finish line. Thank you, Jackson, for a great event!

Great volunteers... LOTS of hills!

First time to Mississippi, and when someone told me the course was going to be hilly, I figured it couldn't be that bad. Was I ever wrong! Miles 1-13 were constant hills... I don't think I ever ran on flat ground during that time period. Up, down, up, down for 13 miles. There was a flat section for about 5 miles, but then back to the hills for that last 8 miles of the race. In fact, it ended on a 1/2-mile continuous hill, which was a bit cruel to those of us already suffering. The good: volunteers were the nicest I've come across, constantly thanking runners for coming to Mississippi and choosing to run the Blues Marathon. Music was excellent during and after! The medal is unique (in the shape of a guitar). This course is not a PR course, or even close really. Heed the warnings and train for hills (unlike me). I don't think I would run it again, but I enjoyed the experience.

No sophomore jinx on this 2nd annual event...

Regardless of the heat, humidity, and hills, the 2009 Blues Marathon was indeed as enjoyable (if not more so) than the inaugural version last year! There is only one reason for this phenomenon: the tremendous effort of the organizers. An upgraded venue for the expo, bringing in Bill Rodgers, and retaining one of the best "volunteers per runner" ratios ever all contributed to an excellent 2nd annual event.

A Warm and Friendly Race

This was a warm and friendly race, where both the people and the weather qualified as warm. The race started and finished in the same place - at the top of a hill - so you knew going in that it would be uphill at the end. Still, the hills were not that bad. The elevation profile chart on the website greatly exaggerated the "hill factor." The people in Mississippi were friendly and cordial. So many people - mostly volunteers - personally thanked me for choosing to come to Mississippi for this marathon event. And you could tell they really meant what they said. It did not hurt that Ole Miss beat Texas Tech in the Cotton Bowl Game during the expo on Friday, either. The marathon was very well organized, and was well supported by the community with an abundance of volunteers. The course was hilly, but they were comparatively small hills. The race committee decided what part of the town they wanted the runners to see, and the hills are a part of the landscape. Still, don't be fooled by the elevation profile on the website. It is not that bad. The race started in Fondren, an old town neighborhood. The course looped around, and then went through the capitol area. After that, the course crossed over I-55 and headed out to an eastern suburb and back (the flat part of the course). Back in town, there were more hills to see up to the north, before heading back over the interstate, and up one more hill to the finish line. A couple of things stand out in this marathon. The volunteers - who always make such a big difference in a marathon anyway - were so friendly and outgoing. They really made you feel like you brightened their day by coming to Mississippi to run in their marathon. Southern hospitality in action. Additionally, there were Blues musicians (mostly one-man bands) providing musical entertainment all along the course. Of course, the hills were a little tougher on our bodies than flat surfaces would have been. A word about the weather: Normal temperatures for January in Jackson are a low of 35 and a high of 55. On race day morning at 5:30, it was 65, and so humid that all of the streets were wet, though it had not rained overnight. Midday on Saturday, it was 70. Yet it was overcast through the day, and rain started falling about 2:00 in the afternoon. Post-race festivities included abundance of food and drink at the finish line (ham or turkey subs, fruit, and soda, water, and 180 energy drink - at least a couple of runners ended up with a whole case of the 180 drink). And there was more music being played at the finish line. Then the marathon event hosted an evening celebration too, but I was not able to attend. The expo was held in a downtown area, and driving in the heart of downtown - and on the marathon course too - you could see that there was an abundance of construction taking place in Jackson. They are pouring a ton on money into this city to improve and update their community. Overall, this was a well-organized event with strong community support (and moderate hills). I highly recommended this winter marathon event.

Music and Organization Grear

Not an easy course but well worth the visit. Organization was "top-notch" given its size. And the music was so good that when I finished I went back to M26 and took in the fantastic live "jam" session. Spectators were so nice, thanking us for being there! Great food (and subs) at the end.

Good race with a challenging course.

This is a very good race with a very challenging course. The expo flowed very smoothly, and race organization was good. Events started on time. The course was hilly, as advertised; there was nothing terribly long or steep, but it was nonstop up and down the entire way - except for an almost 6-mile out-and-back stretch between miles 12-18 or so. The music along the course was nice, but nothing like the Rock-n-Roll events. The post-race spread was good, but I didn't go to the party that night. The volunteers are what made this race as nice as it was. They were very loud and supportive, and everyone was very helpful. There were tons of water stops with plenty of water, Gatorade, and gel. I had no problems with port-a-pots. There was a parking lot full of them at the start. Overall, a good race with a challenging course.

Fun Experience

This was a great overall experience. The music at the expo and finish were great! There weren't a lot of fans, but the ones that were there were really enthusiastic. There must have been 50 volunteers along the course thanking us for coming to run the race. I finished in the middle of the pack for the marathon, and there was still plenty of food and drinks remaining. The course was interesting, going through some nice residential neighborhoods, past the old and new capitol and the governor's mansion. There was one long, boring out-and-back along a highway, and that is why I give it 3 stars. There are some hills, though nothing very steep or all that long. Coming from Illinois, the biggest challenge for me was the warm, humid day.

Great race

For a somewhat smaller city, this race was phenomenal. It had all of the basics for me (I was able to find porta-potties at the start/finish). Spectators and police support were more than adequate, and the expo was really fun, with live blues music and just enough info to make it fun without the overwhelming sense you get at bigger expos. Packet pickup flowed well, and I liked the vest - different, but a nice touch. The only thing that was not ideal was how spread out everything was, but with a rental car, it worked just fine. The hills were a bit challenging, but certainly doable. Also, another plus was not having the marathon overrun with relay folks. The music component was great - I wish there was more, but what they had was really special. I love how proceeds help keep the art of the blues alive! I really enjoyed this race and would recommend it highly. Thanks, organizers, for a great time!

Glad I Ran the Half

This was the hilliest of the six half marathons I've run; it took me 9 minutes longer than St. Jude, which I used to consider hilly! But no more. To respond to a poster who couldn't find the porta-potties at the start/finish: they were there, just tucked away. I don't usually run with my glasses on, but there was some concern about potholes, so I kept them on. The volunteers and the residents were very supportive. I think the Ole Miss upset of Texas Tech had a lot of people in a good mood!

Beautiful city, lots of hills

Ok, I'm a flat-lander, but even experienced hill runners said this course is challenging. Jackson, however, is gorgeous. Lots to see along the way. Loved that. Excellent marking of the course. Well placed and supplied and manned water/Gatorade stops. More visible mile markers would have been nice. The post-race party was AWESOME. Thank you so much. Thanks to the Homemade Jamz for a great show too.

Friendly, Musical and AWESOME

I have never experienced so many friendly and enthusiastic volunteers. Everyone had a smile and a word of encouragement. Tough course - hilly and warm with a 5-mile, semi-flat out-and-back in the middle. Great food, great music, great organization and I LOVE the vest. I will wear it proudly. Thanks for a great race.

No exaggeration - course was challenging!

The expo was so well organized. It was a pleasure to visit. The vest was a nice surprise. I did buy the tech shirt and poster. The course was challenging. The hills were as advertised and the streets were marked to indicate potholes. The volunteers were simply awesome. The spectators that came out were very supportive and encouraging. A big THANK YOU to the police and volunteers stopping traffic. They did an outstanding job. The mile markers were very easy to spot. My only issue has to do with the port-a-potties. There were too few on the course. I understand that there may not be as many runners for the marathon as you have for the half marathon. However, there were not many places to go after mile 13. Keep up the great job. The community of Jackson has a lot to be proud of for this marathon!

I had a great time from start to finish. I thought Nashville was hilly until I ran in Jackson. The volunteers were wonderful as well as the spectators. I wish Mississippi had more of these events. I will be back next year.

Better organization and communication needed

My biggest issue with this race was the lack of organization and communication. The website really needs to e revamped to include better information, i.e. about the awards ceremony. The website mentions an awards ceremony and I was told by several volunteers that the awards would be given at the ceremony for the top 3 in each age group. However, after having waited for nearly two hours, the only awards presented were for those who finished in the top 3 overall; the others will be mailed to the recipients. I have no problem with that (especially since that is the way it is usually done); however, it would have been so simple to make that clear on the website and to the volunteers. When you are traveling out of time and have to check out of the hotel at a certain hour, you really don't have time to waste, so this was very disappointing to me. While everyone was very nice, the lack of information they had was irritating. Better communication regarding lodging would have been beneficial as well. Yes, the course is very hilly but you can prepare for that prior, but I must say that if you are expecting a lot of great blues music along the course, you'll be disappointed. The course itself is very quiet and there is very little music of any kind to carry you through. Again, the people are nice but the organization really needs to be drastically improved.

A Very Good Marathon

The 2009 event was a very good marathon that is only a couple of small tweaks away from being a great marathon. The tweaks are that more porta-potties are needed, both at the start and along the course, the website needs to be redesigned to be more informative (are there age-group awards, is there late packet pickup, etc.?), and the early mile markers need to be set out where they can be seen instead of hidden in the water stops. Those are the only changes that I would recommend to the organizers. The "good stuff" far outweighed the "bad stuff." On the good side, the race, expo, and packet pick-up were very well organized. The course was physically and mentally challenging, but doable. Water and Gatorade along the course were plentiful, and there were a lot of very nice, supportive people out along the course. The traffic control was simply outstanding. Excellent job by the local police departments and a lot of volunteers. The course markings were excellent. This race was well worth a trip from Chicago. Good job!!!

Great Local 1/2 Marathon!!!!!!

This is my second year to run this half-marathon. I can honestly say that this will be on my "to-do" list for years to come. The shuttles to and from the Cabot Lodge were great additions. The course was great, with some challenging hills. This race was very well organized. I think the medal for the half marathon could have been a little better. But overall, I enjoyed this race and plan to do the whole next year!

Best marathon of the year (so far)

No porta-johns at the start/finish! Could not believe it. Had to duck around the corner with an empty bottle. There must have been about five johns spaced over the entire course. Extremely hilly course. Please add hill repeats into your training for this race. I did treadmill inclines and it wasn't enough. Even though it's called the Blues Marathon, don't expect a lot of music like at the Rock 'n' Roll series. The volunteers are so extremely upbeat that they must all be on medication. They really helped me during the final miles when I was doing my survival shuffle. Traffic control was excellent - thank you volunteers and police. If I run again, it will be the half. The full was rather lonely, except for the volunteers. I would have preferred a tech shirt to a vest. The medal was nicely shaped, like a guitar. Post-race food is adequate - with live music! To sum up: no porta-johns, very hilly, great hospitality.

Awesome

I loved everything about the race (half-marathon). Yes, the course was very challenging with a lot of steep, long hills. Miles 11.25-12 was toughest part of the course for me. Jackson made us proud. There are many volunteers compared to the number of runners, which was very nice.

Women's champ rates this race as a real winner!

I came to the Mississippi Blues Marathon not knowing what to expect. It was a first-year race (well, sort of) in a state not known for its distance events. From the moment I arrived at the expo, I was super impressed with the event. Things were well-organized - although I did see a few disappointed people who were being turned away because the race was full. They missed out on a great race. On race day, the organization was great - a very good start area. The course itself was quite challenging, but it was also easy to follow. My biggest complaint was the road surface itself - a lot of rough patches. The hills weren't a problem for me, but I can certainly see how some people might have found them harder than expected - especially in the last 2 miles. That worked out great for me as I used the last couple of hills to drop the competition. The awards ceremony was nice, but the crowd had thinned out a little too much by then - getting an actual electric guitar for the 1st place trophy was incredible! I did hear some complaints about the lack of toilets at the start/finish area, but that's about it. All told, it was a super event, and I'm definitely planning to go back.

Jackson made us proud!

I've been meaning to write my comments on this marathon for MONTHS! Sadly, I'm just now getting to it.... I only ran the half as the event fell in the middle of my training for the Shamrock Marathon. I live in North Mississippi, and my husband is a Jackson native, so I went down to show Jackson my support. All I have to say is, "WOW!" I was SO proud of Jackson! The run was beautiful. The crowds were small but fabulous! The food was the best that I've ever had! Yes, the course was hilly, but I had my best half-marathon time ever. That's how excited I was! This is a MUST-RUN race. The people of Jackson will take good care of you!

Great inagural race... has quite a future

I only ran the half but I ran a different marathon today and it made me realize how great the Mississippi Blues was, especially as a first-timer. The course was very hilly (I couldn't imagine what the marathoners went through), but the crowd was the friendliest crowd there is. There were a few parts that were lacking supporters, but the people who were there were amazing. This race is a great example of Southern hospitality and I highly recommend it! Pros: Expo had great cheap clothes! Cute race packet, cool shirts, great crowd, good organization. Cons: Very hilly... that's all I remember being negative.

Hilly, but parts are flat. Wonderful volunteers.

1. Southern Hospitality was great. I would like thank all of the volunteers, Jackson PD, spectators, schools, cheering squads, and sponsor who make the MB Marathon great. 2. Hilly, especially mile 25 (race director, shame on you). 3.Good CD and shirt. 4. Medal needs a little work (maybe some color or bigger). Still, I love the one I earned. 5. Fresh food for back-of-the-pack marathon runners. 6. Overall, the MB Marathon gets a B. Great job to all.

Gosh Darn Good Marathon & The People Were so NICE

Okay, I didn't run the full marathon, only the half marathon; but as an official support person for a marathon runner, I loved this race. Traffic control was good but not so rigid than I couldn't get from spot to spot to cheer my running buddy on. Being from New England I thought the hills would be easy but they were more challenging than expected. But the best thing was the people. Several Mississippi runners and all the volunteers kept thanking us for coming, something I have never experienced before. The finisher medals were a blast. Marathoners got a guitar-shaped medal; the half marathons got a medal shaped like half of a guitar! When I told the race director I needed to eat a meal in Alabama, he suggested a rib place and it was great! The night after the race we went to the race-sponsored blues show downtown and enjoyed our two drinks, compliments of the race. Overall we really had a good time.

Very challenging course

Organization was great for a first-time marathon. Needed more porta-johns at the start and along the course. Limited amount of music on course but the ones who performed along the course were great. The final hills took everything I had and then some. This is not a marathon for the weak-hearted, or for flat-landers. Great experience but will do the half next time.

Outstanding Marathon!

I have completed 94 marathons and ultra-marathons and this race was top-notch, especially considering it was an inaugural marathon. The race was well organized in every respect, the volunteers were helpful and the crowds were friendly. Traffic was well controlled from my perspective, the medal (pewter-colored guitar suspended from a blue neck ribbon) and shirt (nice screen of a blues guitar) were great! The food which included beer, soft drinks, sandwiches, pizza, fruit and desserts was tasty and plentiful. The race does need more porto-lets; I would suggest at least one or two each aid station for runners and volunteers. Also, this course is hilly, so you are not going to PR here unless it is your first marathon. Also, there were a few bands and musicians along the course but recruiting more to play would be nice. Thank you for staging such a great race!

Kudos to the Blues Marathon and Mississippi

Fantastic overall job on the inaugural Mississippi Blues Marathon. This race and its organizers should be commended for putting on this first-rate event. Packet Pick-up: Nice expo, helpful attendants (an error in my registration was fixed), great music, great location - everything that was needed. Packet: GREAT CD, good pre-race information, and a great tech running shirt. Race Start: Splits until start time were nice, neat blues Star Spangled Banner, and on-time start. Race: Course was well marked throughout, and while hilly, it was nicely challenging (who needs flat all the time?). Great volunteers and police support, but need WAY more port-o-potties (as has been stated). Post Race: Great medal, and nice touch with the mylar, but a separate finisher's area would be nice not to have to wade through family members. Fantastic hot and cold food (way above what was expected) and cold beer, and great blues music. Overall: This is a well organized, friendly and challenging marathon that offers nice perks that you don't expect and may not see at some larger, more expensive races. However, you can still get the small-town feel in this great race.

Fantastic Inaugural Race

The volunteers were so friendly, packet pick-up was very smooth and the police did a great job of directing traffic. Everyone kept telling us how happy they were to see us and welcoming us all to MS. Spectators were not numerous, but those who were on the route were very loud. ;-) The course was a nice, challenging course. The camber was a little tough on the ankles, though. You would never know that this was an inaugural race if the word had not been in the race title.

Fantastic Volunteers!

I have never experienced such nice volunteers before. They made up for the lack of spectators with all their cheering and support. I am a very slow runner and they had to be tired by the time I came through, but they were loud and supportive all the same. The Southern hospitality was in full force all around town. Lots of regular folks thanked me for coming to town. It was so nice. Only one complaint: Where were the porta-potties???? On the marathon course there were almost none. More than once I had to find my own option for a place to go, which isn't easy when running through neighborhoods. YIKES! At least ten times as many were needed. I'll be back and sending other people to this one. Great job, organizers!!!

Great Volunteers, Hills, and Blues

This was a very well organized race by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mississippi. The volunteers were wonderful. I never once worried about crossing an intersection as a volunteer was always there with a stop sign for the traffic. In the major intersections, the Jackson and Flowood Police Departments handled it beautifully. This event took off. Great shirt, great medal, lots of aid stations, good food afterwards, tough finish with big hills and a lot of variety on the course. Great job BC/BS and Jackson!

Friendly People, Challenging Course

I ran the half but some of the comments will apply to both. This was a very well organized first race. What made this race shine was how friendly and warm the people of Jackson were, especially the volunteers. Everyone I came in contact with seemed genuinely willing to help. The expo was great for the size of this race. It had all essentials and more. Packet pick-up could have been a bit better organized, but the wait was reasonable. The course was very hilly!!! There were plenty of hydration stations, at least for the half, but not nearly enough toilets. I saw one at about mile 5 and then one almost at the end. I couldn't believe that the organizers didn't think of this. The waiting area before the start was actually indoors and had real toilets! There weren't lots of spectators but some people did come out to cheer. The volunteers were great all throughout the course. There were a few big intersections that we needed to cross and the police officers would sometimes let traffic through while there were still runners coming. This was a bit scary. The host hotel was very cozy and had free breakfast. There is a trolley that transports you to and from the race (a short distance). I loved the technical shirt and the medal. The half marathoners only got a "half medal," which I thought was really original. Music at the finish was nice and the warm food supplied by local vendors was delicious. They also had free beer! The post-race party was FUN. This was a great chance to enjoy some real Mississippi blues in the company of fellow runners. We each got two tickets for drinks in our goody bag, as well as a Blues CD and even a pair of sunglasses. All in all I really enjoyed this race thanks to the effort put forth by the people of Jackson to make sure that everyone had a great time. Thank you, Jackson. You rock!

This is my 40th marathon and I have run most of the large popular marathons. This marathon stands out for having the most exciting volunteers I have ever seen. I know that this is a new marathon and that the organizers will probably make some changes, but don't change the volume of volunteers on the course. I was getting over a cold and had to walk the last 5 miles of the marathon. The volunteers cheered me on as though I was an elite runner. Jackson, Mississippi I thank you for your warm "Southern Hospitality." Thanks for the glasses.

Inaugural Marathon, Veteran Organization

From the gun to the finish, it was obvious the MS Blues Marathon was formed and organized by veteran marathoners. The most important things to me in a marathon are... on-time starts, well marked course, visual splits, adequate fluids and ample recovery foods. The MS Blues Marathon delivered in every way. This race, with its veteran organization, reminds me of Rocket City Marathon, one of the most professionally organized races out there, which is in its 31st year. As I was struggling in the final 5K, which is a challenging stretch, I was saying, "I don't think I'll run this course again." As I reflect back on the diverse and tactical aspect of the course, it leaves me intrigued. I can't wait till next year. What a JEWEL! Bring back the fig newtons.

1st Time's A Charm

Grannie Annie from the back of the pack here for the marathon. Yes, we really had all the amenities way in the back of the pack. Finished in 6:22, with a great head cold but a happy heart. The course has its up and downs (hills). Loved the uphill finish... yeah, and calling my name out as I came under finish banner. Orange cones are set the whole 26.2 miles. Traffic control was EXCELLENT. Expo: hi-tech. Blue guitar-front shirt is a keeper. The speaker (50 marathons/50 days) was very interesting. The CD was great. On the morning of the race, the blues guitar national anthem was very moving. Fans along the course the very BEST. Whoever led the team of volunteers should be commended - each one greeted runners, thanked us for coming and wished us well. Thank you; the guitar marathon medal was a nice touch. Thank you for doing this marathon right for the fast runners as well as us slowpokes.

Challenging course - excellent organization!!

Running the First Mississippi Blues Marathon was a great experience. The organizers did an outstanding job! The course was hilly and challenging! Surprise, surprise... Jackson IS NOT flat like a pancake! :) It's good sometimes to run challenging courses. There were a lot of friendly and helpful volunteers. There were not many fans, but those who were in the streets were very enthusiastic. The food and beverages after the race were A+. The packet include a nice technical long-sleeve shirt, blues sunglasses, etc., etc. I also recommend this race to everyone. You will have fun in Mississippi! The only recommendation... increase the number of the porta-potties available for the runners.

excellent race

The course was challenging, but the support and spectators made it so much fun. The host hotel and all the volunteers did an awesome job. Everything from the packet pick up to the finish line was very well organized and enthusiastic. The only thing I could ask for next year is more porta-toilets at the start and throughout the course. Thank you, Jackson, for a great race. I'll see you again next year.

Wonderful inaugural marathon

Well organized, friendly crowds, good support and traffic control, and a nice shirt! But just because it's Mississippi, don't expect a flat course. This is moderately challenging.

Great job!

The course did have quite a few hills, and yes, the hill to the finish was brutal, but there were also plenty of declines and flat spots. The organization was A+ and the volunteers, traffic control and police, and the drivers who waited patiently for us to cross the streets were top-notch! Actually, the volunteers were the most cheerful and attentive that I have seen for some time. Good job to all! I will be back!!

Skip the Full, Run the Half

Volunteers were fantastic. Everyone was very supportive and nice. Volunteers stood at every (or almost) intersection with stop signs for cross traffic, and some of the streets didn't seem like they had any traffic. Somewhere around mile 15 was a large of supports who were screaming loudly and cheering for every runner. They were so great; they put a smile on my face! Packet pickup was easy except for one small complaint: packets were handed out at the back of the same room as the expo. You had to weave through people looking at products and standing around. It would have been nice to not have to say, "Excuse me" 10 times just to pick up the packet. This was only my second marathon. My first was the Memphis St. Jude in December. I have run two 1/2 marathons: Maui and Midsouth in Wynne, AR. Each of those races was reasonably difficult. I thought this course was cruel. It starts off downhill. Miles 1-11 were hilly and challenging. (The half marathon split off around mile 11.) Miles 11-18 were relatively flat. Miles 18 to the finish line were mostly uphill. Some portions were downhill, but most of it was uphill. Having the hills in the beginning and the end was too much for me. Also, some of the roads were awful; they were in very poor condition. Camber was pretty bad on some roads. I ran outside of the cones, but no one seemed to care (unlike Memphis, where they yell at you to get back inside the cones). The food after the race was delicious. However, I wasn't able to get any Gatorade because they were out of it. I saw several volunteers or family members eating. I don't care if they eat; I only care when they eat. Supporters should wait until most of the runners (marathoners) are done eating. There were no pacers. No clocks throughout the course. Only split recorded was mile 13.1. Frequency of water stations was adequate, but a few more would have been nice. The finisher's medal is great - in the shape of the guitar. And they put a CD of blues artist in the packet which was nice. I stayed with some friends, so I can't comment about the hotel. My comment to my hosts about the race was that it would was brutal and that it seems like it would be a great 1/2 marathon course because that distance is short enough that the level of challenge and difficulty seems reasonable. I will probably come back down for the 1/2 marathon but not the full. My overall experience was great. The people were superb.

great job for a first-time race.

Volunteers and spectators were outstanding. Very friendly and supportive. The group in front of BC/BS around mile 15-16 was really fun and motivating, cheering with their hats and glasses on. Good food and beer at the end and good music. Only thing I would change is to offer a late packet pickup on Saturday morning for those of us arriving late Friday night. (Luckily I found someone to pick up my packet for me.)

Hats off to Mississippi Blues!!!!!!!

This was my first trip to Mississippi and, being a northerner from Ohio, I had some preconceived reservations. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the friendliness of all locals: at hotels, restaurants, and especially the many enthusiastic volunteers at the race. I even had the chance to run with a native Mississippian for the first 19 miles. Where else can a Rebel and a Yankee enjoy each other's company for three hours. Got to love the camaraderie of marathon running! I gave the course five stars because it has a nice flow of ups and downs with a teaser at the end. But, folks, compared to the Grandfather Mountain, these hills are tiny. Winding through all parts of Jackson, it gives runners a good look at southern living. Sorry, Mr. Southern California, but the traffic control was excellent and the camber of the roads was minimal. Except for a little congestion at the start, ample roadways! Good course! The weather was ideal: high 40s at the start and high 50s at the end. A 10 mph wind, often in your face, did challenge even the Ethiopian who won. I can offer only one small suggestion: that the gels (three stations) be handed out by two or three volunteers slightly ahead of those with the fluids. Overall, it was a great exposure to Southern culture and I would be willing to say that if all Americans ran marathons, we'd all get along a lot better.

Challenging, and very well organized

This course was more challenging than I expected; the hills weren't big, but they were never-ending. There was a flat section, but it ran along both sides of a busy roadway, which wasn't much fun. The rest of the course was fun but hilly. The volunteers were numerous and very helpful. It was very well organized, with lots of support.

Very tough but very well done

The good: Great people, host hotel and a good airport to get in and out of. The expo was small but nice - I have sore feet and loved the carpet. The bad: Needed ten times the porta-johns that were on the course. I was hoping for Vaseline but got none at any of the drink stops. Also, could've used some pretzels. The ugly: We were warned by some folks at the hotel that Mississippi feeds on out-of-state, drivers and that was the case. We just poke along and it was no problem for us, but I noticed a Sunday morning speed trap in full operation for folks heading to the airport. I must tell you, though, that we have never been treated better anywhere. Southern hospitality is certainly alive and well in Jackson. Great job, folks.

Excellent first time marathon

I thought the organizers did an excellent job of putting on the first Mississippi Blues Marathon. The course is challenging, due to the hills and the rough pavement, but I don't think the organizers could do much about that. They could put porta-lets at more aid stations and they could use different-looking barrels for trash and for storing drinks at the end of the race. Other than that they didn't get much wrong. I was impressed by the amount of food and beer at the end of the race, and the post-race party was outstanding. The volunteers were extremely helpful and friendly, and the fans, although modest in number, were equally supportive. I strongly recommend this marathon to anyone.

Tough, but fun

As billed, the course was indeed challenging. However the only hills that heavily impacted my race were around mile 20 and in the final 2 miles. For an inaugural effort, the organization was superb. Several little touches that you may not get at other relatively small marathons (mylar blankets, super nice technical long-sleeve shirt, calling out your name as you finish, etc.). The volunteers made up the majority of spectators on the course, but they poured tons of effort into cheering on all the participants.

Great Inagural Race!

This was a very well done race for an inaugural race. Lots of unique features: "Blues" sunglasses and a blues music CD in the race packet, blues guitar solo for the national anthem, governor AND the mayor to start the race, an aid station manned by Dominican nuns, and sub sandwiches at the finish line. The course was hilly, but there are many other marathons that are hillier. Last mile before the finish was a pretty tough hill. Course was interesting through the half/full split since we ran through neighborhoods. The stretch from miles 13-20 was on a large, busy 4-lane, which was VERY tedious and flat, although the Blue Cross "greeting line" at the turnaround was a spectacular relief! Kudos to the Blue Cross employees manning that outpost. Support was also spectacular, with every aid station well manned by enthusiastic volunteers and fully stocked. Traffic control was the best I've ever seen at a race, bar none! Some of the pavement was in bad shape so you needed to watch your footing, however the worst spots were outlined with spray paint so you could easily see them. Only suggestion: have a few more port-o-potties out on the course at the aid stations. Travel note: Jackson is very easy to get around with a rental car. Hotels near the airport are plentiful and only a 10-minute drive to the race site. Caution: my flight left early in the morning the day after the race and the security line at the airport (they only had one line) was AWFUL (1/2 hour plus)!!! Allow plenty of extra time - many folks missed their flights!

well organized but extremely challenging

If you like hills and a good challenge you will love this race. The volunteers for the race were great and very encouraging. I prefer to have a drink station every mile - having to run longer periods without hydration was very difficult. But overall I was pleased with the race.

Great Marathon

This was really an enjoyable race staffed with enthusiastic volunteers, on a tough hilly course, but with a great finish line! There weren't many spectators, but each aid station had many, many volunteers to cheer on the runners. The race brochure described the course as hilly, and you just need to slow down a bit to run this race. The finish line amenities included fruit, sub sandwiches, pizza, Michelob Ultra and a band for entertainment. I will be back again next year!

Excellent Inaugural Race for the Blues

Hats off to the MS Blues Marathon for pulling off an excellent inaugural marathon. I was never short on supplies with ample hydration, strategic gel placements and Blue Cross employees all along the course at every intersection. The hills were fine on the first half AND brutal from 20 to finish. You can't sing the blues without some suffering and this course delivered - delightfully so! More portable toilets are needed along the course. Spectators were enthusiastic but more attention needs to be placed on drawing in more community involvement - this should come next year after such a successful event. Traffic control was exceptional and plenty of safety support was visible. Our Marathon Makeover training team brought over 70 participants and were not disappointed. Will I do it again? Yes!

First-Class Inaugural Marathon!

The Mississippi Blues Marathon did not seem like it was an inaugural event because everything ran so smoothly. It was a rolling, hilly course, but I like hills, so I ran a good time. The race organizers were very friendly and cooperative and helped me fix my registration problems with ease. There were volunteers about every tenth of a mile and each one was enthusiastic and said, "Good morning! Thanks for coming!" I highly suggest running in Jackson, MS, because it was the friendliest marathon I've ever run. I've run 39 marathons to date.

Great volunteer and spectator support.

This was the most difficult marathon I've ever run (lots of hills) but I ran my best time - and I believe it was due to the wonderful course volunteers and spectators. They all greeted you - "thanking" you for being there. At mile 16, Blue Cross Blue Shield had at least 50 people out to cheer you on - it was like an injection of energy for me. They were wonderful. The hills were plentiful but they were relatively short - the roads were in poor shape at times but the spectators and volunteers made up for it. The race in itself was very organized and they had wonderful post-race activities to include great food, beer, and music immediately following the race. In addition, they had a great party that evening featuring the best of Mississippi Blues. Although a difficult race, the experience is very worthwhile.

Not bad for a first!

Organizers and volunteers were amazing! I've never been thanked more for running a marathon. The Blue Cross spectators brought tears to our eyes as we ran through their unending line of support. One area of improvement that is a MUST: MORE PORTA-POTTIES! I think I only counted a total of 7 from start to finish. A second area of needed improvement is the race course. However I think once the City of Jackson realizes the revenue a big race can produce, they may be more cooperative in closing streets, etc....

LOVED IT!!

What a wonderful race! These were the nicest bunch of volunteers ever. Weather was perfect, and lots of food and great entertainment at the finish. We went to Hal & Mal's for the post-race party that night and Super Chicken was awesome. Jackson, pat yourself on the back for a fabulous marathon weekend experience!!! Did I mention how nice all the volunteers were? Ps. Maybe have a few more porta-potties, especially at the start.

Very well done event

Congratulations to the director, organizers, sponsors and volunteers in this excellent inaugural marathon. They did a wonderful job putting this race together and made it fun for the runners. There were many, many perks. There was great blues music along the course and especially at the stage behind the finish line. The race packet included a nice tech shirt, a CD of all-time great blues musicians, and drink tickets for a party at a blues bar Saturday evening after the race. The course was uh, hilly and challenging, just like the website said, but it went through interesting neighborhoods and gave the runners a nice tour of the city and outlying areas. The race logo was cool and used on banners and mile markers. The volunteers appeared to be well trained and they were all friendly and helpful, thanking all the runners for coming. Police protection was great. One of the most fun things about the race was at the turnaround - at the headquarters of the title sponsor, Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Mississippi. Just as you were coming up to this point, you could see a large crowd of people cheering enthusiastically, and as you got closer, you could see they were all dressed in handsome black coats, pants, and black felt hats - the Blues Brothers? As you ran past, they clapped, cheered, raised their hats, and generally made you feel much more important than you really are. This was VERY cool. There was also prize money, which attracted some very good national and international athletes. My husband and I were certainly impressed with this entire event.

Very challenging, fun, great volunteers

I have never been to Mississippi but now I understand the term "Southern hospitality." Everyone from the taxi drivers, to the hotel employees, race organizers and volunteers was unbelievably helpful and friendly. Many of the runners were there to include MS in the 50 states, so the camaraderie among runners was amazing and made for one of the most interesting marathons ever for me. There was plenty of water/Gatorade on the course, and tons of volunteers controlling traffic. All along the way, locals came out of their houses throughout the various neighborhoods to cheer for the runners. Over and over, as I thanked folks for helping out, I heard in reply, "Thank you for coming here." The blues theme was a lot of fun, with blues bands scattered throughtout, and a whole group of folks dressed in blues costumes around mile 20 (?) and a blues band at the end. Wish I could have stayed for the blues party afterwards. I stayed at the host hotel and had a fabulous dinner at Shimmel's down the street. Awesome sales at the expo/packet pick-up. Thank you to the race organizers who put on a great first marathon and asked runners for feedback for improvement. Well done!

Good Inaugural Marathon, Overall

I enjoyed this marathon, and have the following comments: (1) Thank you for the great, complementary trolley bus ride taking us to and from the start/finish area from the host hotel for our race day. (2) The packet pick-up process at the expo should be revised in a way that creates numerous shorter lines and moves things along faster. [People coming in on their work lunch breaks should be allowed to jump to the front and get out quickly.] (3) The host hotel didn't have a restaurant; and I found a place to eat pasta prior to the race, using my hotel room telephone book. [Please provide details, and discounts, for where to eat for carbo. loading meals, in the race packet provided at the expo., within walking distance, and for those who have a vehicle.] (4) The provision for portable rest rooms at the start/finish, and along the race course, needs to revised to provide enough restrooms for the quantity (1000 plus) of runners and support. I only found one or two along the course, and I actually had missed one of those only to see it later from across the street. (5) The finish area ran out of Gatorade bottles at the finish line for those who ran a 4-hour-plus marathon. (Please provide adequate replenishment drinks - not just beer - at the finish area for all runners.) (6) The finish area had too many fans, visitors, and nonsupport people hanging out, eating the runner food, and generally getting in the way. (Please have volunteers to keep the finish area less crowded for the delirious runners, as they finish and try to find their way to the refreshments.) (7) There were no volunteers at any of the mile markers calling out race times. I had a runner ask me what time it was so that he could determine his pace. (Please provide time-calling volunteers, at least at the 10K, half marathon, 30K, and 20 mile markers.) (8) After mile 17, the asphalt roads were torn up, and uneven (presenting tripping and ankle hazards) for long stretches. (Please make runners aware of the road conditions on the course prior to them running the race course.) (9) I recommend Sal & M. New York Style Pizza for great pasta, within walking distance of the host hotel, (Cabot Lodge-Millsaps). (10) More folks are needed to yell and cheer along the race route, to help motivate the runners/walkers, especially in the last six miles. The race course was well balanced in its variation of hills and flat sections. The race day weather was perfect: 50F, cloudy, light wind. Thanks again for a good inaugural race-day.

Brutal uphill finish

This is a small marathon with a very tough course. Only 5 miles of flat terrain with the remaining course composed of short but steep hills. The worst are the last 2 miles, which are all uphill to the finish. The few spectators that were on the course were very friendly and supportive. The course crossed 4 lanes of traffic several times, which was a bit scary. There was a play area for the young kids at the finish, which was a nice idea for anyone who has small children waiting for their parent to finish.

The marathon was a great all-around experience

For an inaugural marathon this was a "top gun event" The volunteers were incredible, the staff was helpful and the city showed us its Southern charm. The few small glitches were: 1. the host hotel didn't allow a late check-out, which made for an inconvenient experience getting home to the hotel (not being able to enjoy the after-race activities), and get a shower and checked out by noon. 2. Also the roads had to be paid attention to, as there were a lot of potholes and uneven pavement. It was very accurate in being described as a challenging course!!!!! LOTS of hills. The shirt was great, the medal was awesome and unique, and the overall Mississippi experience was a lot of fun. Not all of us got to stay in state overnight, but I would have loved to attend the post-race party... I bet it was a blast.

volunteers the best!!!

Excellent job for an inaugural race! The volunteers were the best I have ever seen - plentiful and enthusiastic. Course was definitely a challenge; at the start we were warned of potholes, but it was mainly uneven road, so pay attention - it is easy to stumble. Hills in the beginning were not too bad; the middle stretch through Lakelands is boring, but understand we need to pass Blue Cross Blue Shield, the main sponsor. Besides, that crowd just before the turnaround can give Boston's Wellesly girls a run for their money - great support! Hills from 22 to the finish, esp. 25-26, were really tough; but your website warned us and we were prepared. Do not lose them despite the complaints you may receive- they make for a challenging and memorable race. Host hotel: The race committee needs to insist on late checkout for the runners. This is common and expected at most races, but Cabot would not budge. If they make that much money from the running community, they should accommodate us by giving us at least one more hour rather than charging us a half-day fee. Lastly, the finish area was one of the best I have ever seen - more than enough food, great variety, great beer, great music. Overall, there are many races who can learn a lesson from Jackson. Thanks to the entire committee and the volunteers. Good job!!!!

EXTREMELY DIFFICULT

First of all, I want to extend my thanks to all the volunteers who made the race possible, and to the race directors for the time and effort they put into getting the race together. The race packet was the best. Tech shirt, sunglasses, Gu, Blues CD. It was great. The weather was perfect. Now for the course. I gave this course a 1 because of the difficulty. The grades of the hills and the never-ending up-the-hill and down-the-hill completely trashes your legs. By mile 10, my legs were cooked. There is a 5-miles stretch that starts at mile 13 that is flat, but unfortunately for me, my legs had already had enough, and then the hills started back up again until the very end where you have a mile long 15% grade hill to the finish line. For most people this is not a PR or BQ course. If you like a challenge, this course is for you! I'm glad that this was only a training race for me because I would have been very disappointed. I was just happy to finish a course that will test your strength mentally and physically, and humble you as a runner. May the New Year bring everyone a PR!

Hills, Hills, Hills

First-time marathoner. This marathon starts in a historic district (Fondern) of Jackson, MS. Blue Cross/Blue Shield is the title sponsor. The MS Marathon up until last year was run on a rural highway outside of town. It drew very few runners and even smaller crowds. This year with the move to town, BC/BS getting involved, and the mayor of Jackson and the governor of Mississippi in attendance, the event took off. My guess is that there were over 1300 runners for the half and full marathons. As a rookie marathoner, I didn't take the course's hills into account during early pacing. There is only one relatively flat part of the course. This is a few miles in the middle. The beginning 12 and ending 8 miles are nothing but hills. The race, I thought, was very well organized. The fan support was nice; traffic control was outstanding. BC/BS must have had 500+ volunteers. The volunteers were outstanding. It was a great event for the Jackson area and Mississippi.

Awesome Inaugural Marathon

I found everything to be very well organized. My only suggestion is they rework the packet pickup. Don't put names on the bags; put names on the chips and then get the bag with the correct size shirt. Well done. Loved the Gatorade Endurance. Would prefer a different gel. The people at the BC/BS building around mile 14-15 were AWESOME!! That was the best part of the course.

Challenging and well run

The people working the stations were superb. There had to be over 500-600 people in support roles at this race, maybe more. Traffic control was A+ - great job, JPD. Course was scenic and very hilly. If a course exists with more hills, I don't want to run it. Very challenging, and very well organized race. The music along the way was great too. Thanks Blue Cross; great job.
