Great crowd participation, odd course

This race had great crowd participation in all the neighborhoods. Each neighborhood had a nice aid station. Traffic was not stopped at all intersections, which you had to be aware of in some cases. The pacer I was running with also fell behind pace somewhat significantly which was a disappointment. The course ran through mostly residential. Would have been nice to run through a park or two. Some directions for pieces of the event were not conveyed clearly via email, though this did not effect the race.

Very good event!

Really liked this event! After going to the website numerous times, I was skeptical about the race. Traveling 8 hours to Springfield with doubts about a race is an uneasy feeling. All I had was a receipt that I paid, but had zero confidence in the event based on the website. The website is my only complaint. Once I got to Springfield, all my concerns were alleviated. Very easy and nice Expo. Everything was well organized, clean and efficient. Very easy parking at the Bass Pro store parking lot and I didn't even get there too early. Started with the smaller races (5k & half-marathoners) but was still OK. Loved seeing the painted bass (fish) on the course to keep us on track. A lot of turns but that was OK. There were some mild hills in the early miles but not too steep for this flat-lander. I would not call this a flat race but wouldn't call it hilly either. We had a warm and windy day which prevented me from meeting my time goals but would do this race again if the weather was better. Plenty of water/Powerade support throughout. Worked with the 3:30 pacer later in the race and he was a great advocate for the race! Was a little surprised that the half marathoners turned off so early in the race, but not a big deal. Love these smaller races! With less than 400 marathoners, I was alone only a few times. Very happy I did this race. Had the weather been cooler, it would have been an excellent event for me personally. Summary - Great event, race and well organized!! Mild rolling hills early. Adequate spectator support. Really bad website.

Great choice for Missouri!

This was my Missouri marathon on my 50 state marathon quest. It was a really good choice! The organization was excellent, the course wasn't too hilly, and the finish area was excellent. There were plenty of aid stations. You go through a lot of neighborhoods which can get a bit boring, but some of those neighborhoods did a great job of being enthusiastic and entertaining. There was some nice scenery along the course but I would not call it a scenic marathon. The Bass Pro Shop store as the site of race central was really cool. The expo was nice for its size and there was plenty of parking. The finish area a had a lot of food including ice cream! The mile markers were the best I have seen at any marathon. I drove the course the day before the race and those people were working hard to construct the scaffolding that the mile markers were placed on. KUDOS to them for their hard work!! There wasn't much in Springfield in terms of sightseeing so the marathon was really the main attraction. I rented a house through Airbnb that was less than 2 miles from the start and was much cheaper than a hotel. Overall I'm glad I did this marathon for Missouri and I would like to congratulate the race committee for an excellent job.

Well organized

This is a great midsized marathon. Frequent water stops with food, snacks or gu, the course was gently rolling. I put in a special plug for the Days Inn South. Even though it is a bit older, it is clean. Plus it is an easy walk from the start/finish. They also opened breakfast at 5;30 so runners could get a bite to eat before the race. Since the hotel is so close to the start you can stay in your room until just minutes before the start

A Well-Done Smaller Race

This was a great race being that it was a smaller race (~350 full marathon racers). Unlike most marathons, they split off the half marathon runners at mile 1. This means that you are running alone or with a tiny group for the next 25 miles. The route is full of small rolling hills which can zap your leg strength, thus providing a great challenge. The course winds through residential areas mostly. The mature trees keep the sun off of you for most of the race. I would do this race again if I were coming back to the area.

great medals bad shirts

I liked the shirt design just not the snagging material. The medals were great. It was very unfortunate that the computers were down and we waited over an hour and still did not get our time printout or a certificate.

Great course, but amenities were light.

I needed MO and this was close to home so it seemed the perfect race to run. I loved the course, fall colors made it absolutely beautiful. Rolling hills from start to finish make it a little tough, but plenty doable. Course support was great. Plenty of aid stations, well staffed and stocked. Starting at Bass Pro Shops made parking a breeze, no need to stay within walking distance at a high price. Loved the pasta dinner for only $10 each. The finish line amenities need a lot of improvement. I finished in just over 4 1/2 hours and all there was available for finishing runners was chocolate milk, tiny boxes of cereal, and granola bars. You'd think Bass Pro could spring for a decent spread of food at the finish. Overall, great and enjoyable race that I may do again.

not the best marathon for the slower person

They had a really good expo, lots of exhibitors, and very friendly people. Beautiful course, not as hilly as I expected, just enough to keep things interesting. They advertise no time limit, but if can't complete in 6 1/2 will have to move to sidewalks. I finished in 6:31, there may have been good traffic control earlier, but there were some significant intersections with none, or policeman sitting in car, ignoring traffic, yet in some residential areas maybe 2 policemen. The route is marked with green arrows which you can't see until you are right on top and you can go blocks without an arrow or a volunteer to direct you. I spent a good deal of the race fearing I might be lost & at one point 4 of us did miss a turn, but fortunately one of them had a map. At the end there was no food and no one to direct you out of a maze to reach the parking. I think that probably people who finished in an average or better time wouldn't have encountered some of these problems so in short if you can't stay with the pack, this probably isn't the race for you.

Very Well Organized

The marathon was very well organized. The aid stations well well staffed. They consistently had water 1st and energy drink second. Every one was very helpful. I did not stay for the massage but there appeared to have many massage therapists. The weather was perfect. The course was rolling hills. Travel to Springfield was a breeze. I would recommend this race for someone who wants to run in Missouri.

Fun Little Marathon

Ran the Bass Pro Marathon in 2013. Course is full of rolling hills (I think there is a reason they didn't post an elevation map on the website!). The course wasn't extremely challenging but if you don't do some hill training you will hurt a little. Most of the roads aren't completely closed during the race so there are some cars trying to pass runners. The busy roads are closed or had officers directing traffic. Before the race runners can stay warm inside Bass Pro. Race started at 7, we didn't go outside until 6:45 which was really nice. I thought it was a fun little marathon.

Fishin' for a great marathon?

I ran this marathon five years ago and this year. It is remarkable how much it has improved. The course was much better, very scenic in nice neighborhoods, mostly flat but gently rolling enough to work different muscles. The weather was perfect. The organization was top notch. Not a whole lot at the expo but there usually isn't for a marathon this size. The pasta dinner with Fank Shorter and Dick Beardsley was very interesting and the videos they had of the 72 Olympics and the Duel in the Sun was worth the $10 alone, and the food was very good. This was my 14th marathon and may be the first one I have run where there are no complaints. The shirt was great and except for wondering about the significance of the large wolf on the medal (no largemouth bass?) I can only say it was a totally positive experience.

My new favorite marathon

This was my 6th marathon and has become my new favorite. I even enjoyed it more than Boston! The size was good - not so many people that it was crowded, but I was never alone out on the course. The course is a flat and fast loop with no out-and-back sections. Everything was well-organized, and I never had to wait in any lines. The Bass Pro store is open early the morning of the race so runners can wait inside where it's warm and kill some time browsing around without the usual crowds. Early November is a perfect time of year weather-wise, and the fall foliage was in brilliant color. Long-sleeve technical shirts and great medals. Nice expo with lots of freebies. Plenty of parking at start area. Start and finish are close together. The only thing I would change would be to have a separate start for the half marathoners. They did split off early (which was good), but the first mile was a little crowded.

Great well organized marathon

I highly recommend this marathon it was my first time running it and by far one the best marathons I have ever run. Well organized with plenty of parking right next to the start. Bass pro opened there store up for runners to stay warm and use the facilities. Ample well staffed aid stations every 2 miles. Course only has a few hills that are not too bad. Only complaint is that course has a lot turns. Finish area had plenty of food and beverages. I will definitely run this race again.

This was my first marathon!!!

My first marathon. The course was great getting to run all over Springfield on the roads was cool. Aid stations had everything a runner needed. The only bad thing for me was there wasn`t a lot of spectators. Next year I am training for the marathon so I can run this race start to finish. :))

A nice, but not great, well organized event.

This was my first visit to Springfield and found it to be a nice town. The race was very well organized, with ample water stations staffed with enthusiastic volunteers. There were an abundance of port-o-johns at the start and the pre race wait was minimum. There were ample ones on the course. The course was a nice run around Springfield going through downtown, parks, and the campus. Most of the race was in well maintained residential neighborhoods of varying affluence. I noticed no significant hills, but an abundance of turns. I also missed a turn, and a volunteer ran after me to get m back on track. I must have ran a block or so and they could have been more attentive. I was slightly over 6 hours and there was plenty of food at the finish and I was able to get a massage. Overall this is a nice event that I would recommend; however, I couldnt rate it as a great or destination event. There was a pre-race devotional that I found most beneficial.

Getting Better Every Year...

This is a marathon that definitely seems to be committed to getting better every year. I'll confine my comments to the three categories: Course: I speak as a local Springfield runner in saying that the organizers do everything they can to make this a great course. It offers a fine tour of Springfield, now that we have moved off the trails and onto the streets for almost all of the race; as nice as the trails are for scenery, I certainly hope they keep this setup in coming years, as it is far more interesting. As others have noted, there are only a couple big hills, including a short-but-tough one at 18. (Suggestion: Have us turn south off Water at Jefferson instead of Main, and make up the difference in the Southern Hills area, thus avoiding the climb as well as a less-than-picturesque area of town.) However, there is a lot of gradual up and down throughout, along with some smaller hills. The route is extremely pretty, with the trees in full fall colors. However, it does seem to be more open to traffic than I would like. And, in all honesty, Springfield drivers are not known for being particularly accommodating to runners. It would be good to have volunteers at every intersections, if possible. Also, the directional arrows at some intersections are painted on the opposite side of the road from the direction of the turn (i.e., a left turn arrow on the far right side of the street). With a smaller field, seeing the arrows well is important; if you are running the tangents and know the next turn is a left, you could miss the arrow. All in all, though, it is a nice, scenic, interesting course. Organization: I find this race to be extremely well organized. I was in and out of packet pickup in a flash, and everything ran smoothly before, during, and after the race. The food after-wards is great, and they give good value for price in terms of the medal and shirt. I wish there was more of an expo, however. Also, there could be a couple more aid stations. Fans: There are not a ton of fans along the course, but many of those who do show up are enthusiastic. The volunteers are great, too - going out of their way to be helpful and encouraging. And there is a lot of energy at the finish, as well as the start. All in all, I highly recommend this enjoyable fall marathon.

Lacks organization, but has lots of enthusiasm

If there was ever a race that needed marathon runners' input in setup and organization, this is it. The course winds around a lot, and the turns aren't always clearly marked. It's a smaller field, so it's easy to lose track of the runner in front of you, and if the volunteers aren't vigilant about telling you which way to turn (sometimes they are chatting amongst themselves and not paying attention to runners) it is easy to run the wrong way. I unfortunately did run the wrong way at one point and the volunteer did not correct me. Also the water stations are very short. The volunteers are huddled close together, and if you're running at a faster pace, or in a group, it is nearly impossible to get water and Powerade. My only other complaint is that the five people I asked at the expo had no clue about gear check, and on race morning I had to ask four people where gear check was before someone could help me. As for the positives: It's a fairly fast course. It's far from flat, but there is only one killer hill. (Mile 21 or 22) The rest of the hills are smaller, but they never really end. Also, everyone is really friendly. The organizers and volunteers really make you feel comfortable. And lastly, I did think the finish line atmosphere was amazing. The announcers were great, and the post race snacks were good. Because it's a smaller race people aren't trying to rush you through the chute. It was nice to finish and then have a chance to stop catch my breath without people urging me to move along. With a little bit of work this could be a great race.

Course Improved for 2010

I strongly disagree with those who said that the old marathon course was better than the 2010 course. Most large, successful marathons are run primarily on streets and not Greenways trails. I love training on the trails, but they are not for racing. The old out-and-back on the Southcreek Greenway was dreadful. The new course was about as flat as you could design a course in Springfield and it actually hit more of the highlights in town. I did not have any problems with traffic control and was actually pleasantly surprised that they did as well as they did. I was, however, very disappointed with the organization at packet pickup. There was one line for all three races and the packets were not put together ahead of time. There was plenty of room to have separate tables for each event and possibly a couple of tables for each event. I was actually embarrassed standing in line with out-of-towners while waiting over 30 minutes to pick up my packet. Overall, I was happy with the marathon and glad to see the course changes; I just hope they don't go back to the old course after the construction at 60-65 is done.

Wonderful race

Very happy I chose this as my first marathon. Only a few small hills. The course was enjoyable because of all the different turns and streets that are encountered. No mile after mile of long, boring stretches. Volunteers and police were at all intersections. Best of all, water, Gatorade, and port-a-potties every two miles; I didn't have to carry any drink myself. May do this again next year! Very well organized.

Flat Course But Poorly Organized

I registered for this race about 6 months prior to the event, which is very early, but at the early bird cost of $35, I couldn't resist. They couldn't find my goody bag when I arrived at pre-registration. They ran out of t-shirts. They did not call my name and city out when I crossed the finish line but they did call out others' names and cities. Spectators and volunteers were awesome! Enjoyed the gel packs they had at the water stops. My friends had goody bags, but there was nothing in the goody bag so I felt better. Not sure if I will do this race again or not.

Small event, but great course for a PR!

At first I was very disappointed with this marathon. The expo wasn't... all it really was was a tent in a parking lot for packet pick-up. The morning of the race wasn't too much better; however, there was lots of parking in Bass Pro Shop's parking lot and racers were able to wait inside the building to stay warm til the start of the race. The half and full marathon split just before the 1-mile mark, but I actually enjoyed running with just other marathoners more than having the half marathoners split away at, say, mile 10. And the course was fantastic! Almost completely flat and very fast! (I ran a 3:31, breaking my PR by over 9 minutes). There was a small amount of community support; however, at almost every intersection the race director had a volunteer posted to help direct racers in the correct direction and seeing that many people helped. Post-race amenities were good as well. They had cartons of milk, which were delicious, and I only had to wait 5 minutes for a massage!

Course change was a big disappointment!

Last year's course was much better. I did not like running on the streets, as I had to avoid cars that were not happy about sharing the road with us runners. Got honked at and yelled out, and smelling the exhaust was horrible!!! Several runners mentioned that they were nearly hit as well. I would sooner have stayed on the trails that we ran last year!! The organization was incredible, and I know it is not possible for the directors of the race to control motorist. But last year's course was beautiful, peaceful and much better!!! Also, too many hills in the beginning of the race made it rough!

Another redemption of my Chicago shortcomings!

Lots and lots of turns on this course, but I enjoyed the ample parking, restrooms and friendly atmosphere provided by this race. Really a flat course! Thanks for giving me a chance to finish a marathon after bonking at mile 17 of Chicago!

I'm just lucky I finished alive!

I live around Springfield and I am really disappointed that the city of Springfield or Bass Pro couldn't coordinate better traffic control. If cities the size of Seattle can shut down sections of the interstate for a marathon, then Springfield should be able to close off a few small areas for a few hours on a Sunday morning. One older man was driving right toward us and didn't give us a second look. If we wouldn't have moved, we would have been roadkill. People were driving past us going 45-50 mph. Very disappointed. There were also 65 turns in the marathon course. As a Springfieldian, I'm embarassed.

Beautiful, well organized event!

This was my first marathon, and my only goal was to complete it. Tens years before, I weighed over 220 pounds; running this marathon was an completion to my journey! I had no expectations of placing, let lone winning. I just wanted to finish. I DID, in 3:45. I won the Masters, and qualified for Boston (my next marathon). I loved the course; it was very scenic and very enjoyable to run. The event was very well organized all the way from signing up, to packet pick-up, to the start, to the course, to the finish line! I look forward to running this marathon again!

Very enjoyable half marathon.

This is my third year for the half marathon. I think 2008 was the best as far as the expo portion. The 2009 edition was the best, as far as the pasta dinner. At first, I was a little worried, when I realized the group was so small. That quickly changed with the friendliness of the guest speakers. What great guys. I would like to see if a female could be found to talk in this type of format as well. The race itself is beautiful. I am always so impressed with the attitudes and encouragement of other racers and volunteers. The bridge is always my biggest worry and accomplishment with this race. The police and volunteers working the intersections are super. The mud was an issue this year, with spots being slick, but with all the rain prior to the race, it was understandable. I would like to see hamburgers and other things to eat at the end besides eggs. However, bless the "smoothie" folks. Those are the first thing I look for after this race. The water stations and goodies at each station were great as usual. The pretzels were a real treat at the last station. I'll be back next year. I would like to have half-marathon results posted as well.

course congestion on the trails

There was a lot of conflict with the half marathon walkers and marathon runners on the trail for about three miles late in the race. I set a PR on the course, so I won't complain too much, but other marathons do a much better job of providing the marathon runners clear running room. I do not intend to run this again next year. They did several things well, but the course map was not one of them, and it didn't have an elevation profile, which is needed to attract a more competitive field.

Pros and Cons

My first time running Bass Pro. It's a mixed bag. The huge mile markers were great. Although uncontrollable, the weather was awesome. It warmed up quicker than I was dressed for, but it was sunny and beautiful. There were definitely more hills than advertised, but none that were too daunting. I didn't like that the route was two out-and-backs, and included quite a bit of concrete. The fuel stops were staffed by prepared and enthusiastic volunteers. The other runners were the BEST part! I don't think I've ever done a race where everyone encouraged EACH OTHER so much! That was definitely a boost. There were a few areas where it was hard to tell where to go; you had to follow a small arrow painted on the ground or follow the trail of cups people had left behind! Most disappointing was the expo, or lack of. It was basically a packet pick up and the shirts (although tech) were HUGE! I got an extra small (I am a medium-sized gal) and it is still going to have to be a sleep shirt! Bass Pro was neat and having a Starbuck's RIGHT THERE was awesome! The MC at the finish line was awesome - very fun and celebratory. The prizes for the winners and age group awards were somewhat unique. I might be back if they change the route. I heard that the ending used to be in the Bass Pro; that would be neat!

Wonderful course

This was my first marathon. Despite others' comments about the course, I found it fairly easy. There was only one really big hill. Other than that, it was mostly flat. The spectators and volunteers were wonderful and supportive all throughout the course. I do wish there had been more porta-potties, and at more of the mile markers. All in all, it was an awesome marathon!! :)

Course quality was poor due to water on the trails

This race was enjoyable due to the weather, but running on two separate trails and going out and back is not enjoyable - especially in the second half when you had the walkers on the same trail. Some of the water on the trail could have been swept off the trail. It was very annoying to have the runners that plowed through, and did not care if you were trying not to get too wet. There was wet mud to slip on also. A big "thank you" to the volunteers on the streets and the water stations. There are too many turns on the streets, which slow you down, and Mile 25 is uphill (not a good time for that street). The course map needs to have mile markers printed on it since I was from out of town and had no idea of the mile to have my spectators find me. I would not rate this course as flat or fast, since the first trail was winding and on a slight angle. The second trail was flat, but we had to go over the highway to get there.

Volunteers made it special!!!!

This was my first out-of-state marathon. Overall, it was GREAT. I encourage every slow runner and walker to do this race. You will get so much encouragement. It's a hard course, but there's beautiful scenery on the trails! Just a few things I would change: There need to be signs telling us which way to go. I turned the wrong way twice, and so did others. The food at the finishing line should be hamburgers or some type of sandwiches - not eggs and biscuits. The volunteers were so, so supportive. Every mile marker I got huge encouragement, as so did the others around me. The St. John's medical team was awesome! They checked on you and made sure you had plenty of water. I was having a tough time and a volunteer biker offered me a big hug. The guardsmen were just as awesome! I just cannot say enough about the support. The band still played until the last person came in. There was a girl on a bike, part of the support system, that made sure every one of us who was lagging behind got in safely. She rode on that bike for hours cheering us on. I would highly recommend this one to everyone who wants a Missouri medal. Plenty of water and snacks! If it had not of been for the wonderful volunteers at the mile markers and the St. John's medical team, I, along with a few others, would not of finished. GREAT JOB, BASS PRO!! What stands out to me the most is that the Bass Pro cares about the few who came in last. Made us all feel special, with lots of cheers and wonderful encouragement - as if we had finished in first place. Thanks, Bass Pro; I will be back.

Run this to have fun, not to PR.

Positives: It's beautiful in the Ozarks this time of year. Pasta dinner with the Legends was worth the trip alone. There was no crowded finish area. Very organized. Name on bib (even after cut-off date) was great for spectator involvement. Negatives: No excuse this day and age not to have course profile so runners have more accurate expectations for how to pace themselves. We will return when we exceed those expectations, but may not if we don't regardless of finishing time. This course is not a PR course and you need to conserve from the beginning due to how tight it is on greenbelt trails. Too much running on concrete. Remove pedestrian bridge over highway as part of course! No expo to buy fuel, cold weather gear, etc. I hear next year they will remove the trails, so I probably will be back.

Nice Weather, Nice People, Hard Course.

I ran the half, and my friend ran the full marathon. The volunteers were all lovely people, and the weather was perfect. The course is definitely not flat. The pedestrian bridge is a killer. I had to walk up it on the way back. The course was very accurately marked, which is amazing since they had to re-certify it due to flooding the day before the race. Good job! My biggest complaint about the race was the SUGAR-FREE PowerAde at every water stop except one. I'm sure this was just a mistake, but it was big one. Please make sure to never have sugar-free sport drink on your course. The whole point of sport drink is calorie replenishment for energy. Not to mention the after-effects of ingesting a chemical artificial sweetener during a strenuous race. I just couldn't believe it. There was no expo at all. So be sure to bring what you need, because you won't be buying anything there. Finally, one more complaint: they ran out of small t-shirts even though I registered months in advance. That is really annoying. Overall, I had fun. Enjoyed the run. Beautiful colors and nice weather.

"Flat, fast, and fun??"

Suspect any writeup that says, "Flat" without providing an elevation chart (at least I never saw one). I'd call this one consistently undulating, which I appreciated as it's more fun and easier on the legs than flat... but I appreciate accurate advertising. This run has the BEST mile markers ever, warm staging inside Bass Pro, wonderful people, and outstanding notables (Galloway, Shorter). Consider please: marking the course better in the residential streets, offering food at more stations, and more variety. Some of us like salty stuff, and some sweet. Running at the height of fall colors was a joy, and it was a fine finish festival, though I can't see the gravy and beer after 26.2. It's a local thing it seems.

Great, small race; just wish it were flatter

My positives: beautiful course on mostly a paved trail; fabulous volunteers; great, large mile markers (website shows this); plenty of water stops; nice finisher hat and medal; perfect weather; nice small race for those who don't want a big crowd. Bass Pro Shop was a cool place to visit. My negatives: fast and flat to the locals maybe, but not to a central Illinoisian looking for a fast race on this weekend (I should have known better); a lot of small, rolling hills and turns; two out-and-backs; no race expo (Bass Pro Shop seemed to replace this); very little spectator support.

Well Worth Doing

Bass Pro is a fine marathon with plenty of potential to get even better. My comments on each category are as follows: 1. Course: It's a very scenic course largely contained on various running trails around Springfield. As a resident of the city, though, I would like to see it branch out and highlight the various portions of the city itself. (I understand they are moving in this direction.) One other reason, in my opinion, is that the trails tend to flood... a problem we experienced this year. The course is not what I would call flat, but it isn't difficult either. 2. Organization: This is a well-run race in many ways. Packet pick-up is a breeze, and they provide a lot of extras for the price. I liked getting a high-quality, long-sleeved shirt as well as a nice hat. They mark and control the course well, with the largest mile markers I have seen in any race. One hint would be a couple more aid stations, and definitely more port-a-potties. 3. Spectators: Some parts of the course have a lot of spectators; other parts are pretty lonely - especially in some of the trail areas on the edges of Springfield. The folks who showed up were great, as were the fantastic volunteers. The police are quite friendly as well. All in all, Bass Pro is well worth the trip to Springfield, and the Springfield area has plenty to do if you bring the whole family. The organizers are committed to getting better each year, making it a race with lots of potential.

absolutely beautiful!

This was by far the most beautiful marathon I've run so far! The weather was perfect, and the course was challenging but not intimidating. A definite must run for anyone.

This is a great race; I love it!

This race is great! I live in Washington, MO and am going to drive every year to run this marathon. The marathon is a great course and the people at the drink stations are wonderful! The staff that works that day are so supportive and it makes a great day for a race! You should come out and join us this year; it is an amazing experience and it becomes addictive!

Not bad for a small, new marathon.

The course is nice, except for the winding streets full of traffic. A couple of times I wasn't sure where to go. The trails are great, though! I would be happy to see more porta-potties and more aid stations. Also, saying there is entertainment is a big stretch! Maybe a contest for the best aid station would be helpful to get the volunteers more into the race! I'm glad to have one so close to home to do!

I would like to see this marathon grow!

I've run this marathon both years and don't have another marathon to compare it to, so I'm not an expert by any means. But I would like to see a few changes made. Add more drink stands with gels in miles 19-25, and take out the winding sidewalk. Considering my legs were about to give out at this point anyway, the turns killed my knees! More entertainment along the way would be great! Having more spectators would be great, but it's kind of hard to control that!

Fun race

This was my first marathon (I'm 66 years-old). I ran the Cohick 1/2 last year. As a Springfield resident, it is easy to learn the course, but next time they will have to change it because of some planned construction along the way. The celebrities are always great and the runners terrific. However, 2 and 1/2 months later, I am still waiting on my finisher's hat. I sure hope I get it someday because I will probably never be able to run another, as I now have some health issues. Thanks to Bass Pro, Martin, Carol, Zoe, Chris, Linda, and lots of others for all of their hard work to make this a success.

Not bad, but needs to get better.

I ran in '07, and again in '08, and I really feel the event didn't progress much in year 2. It's enjoyable and they treat you well, but I really feel the course needs to feature more of Springfield. Run the course through the SMS campus (sorry, Missouri State), Walnut Street and the ballpark area, to the beautiful downtown area and beyond. It's likely spectators would be increased and the community would be showcased to a higher degree. The excellent downtown Springfield organization would likely embrace and support this event. All in all, I just felt a little underwhelmed. The event could be better.

Great race!

The expo was small but the people were friendly. Kashi had a wonderful display set up and I got a free 15-minute, pre-race yoga class in. By the way, I am a marathon walker.... I walked with a friend for the first 4 miles at faster than 12:30 pace until the half split off. I was still feeling great, so I kept my pace well under 13 mpm, even though my plan was to alternate 13- and 14-minute miles in order to finish under 6 hours. Right here, I should comment on how beautiful the course is in Springfield. The trees were all changing and the color was magnificent: yellow, orange and red with evergreen mixed in. With most of the course on the greenway trails, there is almost no traffic to contend with for the entire race. I highly recommend this race to anyone who is looking for a fall race. They still had an 8-hour time limit, and the weather has been really great both years. At the half split, 2:47??, I was still feeling great, but I knew I had been going too fast. I kept telling myself to slow down. I tried at that point to get back to the plan and I did slow down considerably because the second half was 3:02.... There are some hills on the course and the worst one is a green walking bridge over a highway at mile 19, which you have to cross again at about mile 24. I only had two miles over 14 minutes, one with a potty break and once when I stopped at 21 miles to get my bearings, eat a gel and talk to two nice young men in uniform who were volunteers on the course. One of them told me he just started his training for the Bataan Memorial Death March Marathon next year. I never expected to beat last year's time on that course by 16:49, or 39 seconds per mile. Funny, the announcer called out the names of the three people who finished ahead of me, but didn't call out my name. I don't know what that was all about, but from the pictures, my race-walking form was still pretty good at the finish. It even looked like I had a straight knee at the end.

Great celebrities, ok event

First off, hats off to Bass Pro Shops and the race organizers for getting together the GREATEST in marathon history to attend, speak at, and participate in this event. Rodgers, Shorter, Beardsley, and Galloway were all at the same event and it is NOT Boston or NYC! Great job, Bass and Springfield. Great weather and solid organization. Could use more port-a-johns at the start and along the course. Really few to speak of and this is a problem. Bass Pro has an entire parking lot available to porta-johns at the start and finish; use it for the runners. Support: Little along the course. It is ok, but mostly you are running in a small-town event, and while not many turn out, the ones who do are really spectators, and don't offer much cheering or support. Course: Hated it; sorry, Springfield. Ok, I have no problem with hills, and to be honest, the website elevation chart is accurate. But you were either going up an incline, down an incline, or around a curve - a tight curve usually. So the opportunity to get out and RUN is not there. A tight course and you are either using energy going up a hill, TRYING to conserve energy going down a hill, slowing for a curve, etc., Now the best part: I "caught" up with Bill Rodgers at the 6.0 mile marker, and ran with him for the ENTIRE rest of the 1/2 marathon!! Just me and him, running, talking, trading setting the pace, etc. - I mean, just me and him!! As we closed to the finish line, Bill finished right ahead of me, but my best friend (RR) got a picture of me and Bill as we neared the finish, and then I got a personal photo in the runners' pen after the race with me and Bill, arms around each other's shoulder and having cold bottle of water! It does not get better. So while the course could be faster, the spectators more plentiful and loud. This will go down as my greatest running experience ever simply because I RAN with Bill Rodgers! - EPM

Nice small marathon

For being only in its second year, I thought the organization of the race was well done. Full marathoners start with the halfers, but around mile 3-4 (?) the halfers break off. The marathon field size was fairly small (around 300), so you can run alone if you want. Mile markers were large and very easy to see. Aid stations were about 2 miles apart and had Cytomax, water, gels and many had other offerings such as pretzels, oranges, M&Ms. The weather was beautiful, but it was too warm for me later in the day (around 73), so the pretzels came in handy. The course is not entirely flat as advertised but the hills were not huge and they were doable. The run along the greenway was nice but the last few miles in the neighborhood were tough, as there were few spectators. There are quite a lot of turns in the neighborhoods but there were plenty of volunteers showing you which way to go. One thing I did not particularly care for was that you had to run from behind Bass Pro in the final half-mile. You couldn't see the finish line and the back of the building was not the most scenic. Maybe that part could be re-routed? The finish medal was a large fish, which is definitely a unique shape to add to my medal collection! Note: The Motel 6 by the highway was only $35 and they gave me late checkout at 1:00 (at no extra charge) so I could take a shower after the race. I heard other motels were charging extra.

Very Challenging Marathon!!

A very challenging marathon! First, the expo was very good. Having it at the Bass Pro store was a great idea. We had Starbucks coffee by the fireplace - very nice - with nice rocking chairs and very friendly people. We spent a lot of time walking around the store. The pasta dinner was totally awesome! We got to meet and talk to and take pictures with Frank Shorter and Bill Rodgers. Bill Rodgers was especially nice and encouraging; he was a great guy! The dinner itself was quite good, with excellent salad, pasta and pie. The speakers were outstanding and were a great motivation before the race. Dick Beardsley was especially great, as he recounted his "Duel in the Sun" with Alberto Salazar at the 1982 Boston Marathon. As for the race itself, it was a beautiful day - a bit warm for November, but the Springfield area was very nice. This is a challenging course. It is very hilly and I made the mistake of not training enough on hills. I enjoyed the scenery of the area while running and there were a lot of nice things to look at while running. I forgot about my time at several places as I got caught up in the scenery and the beauty of the area. Water breaks were plentiful, and the volunteers were awesome. Porto-potties were plentiful also. Had gel at a few stops, along with fruit, pretzels, and candy, if you wanted that. Definitely plenty of water stops. The volunteers were all very friendly. Traffic control was excellent also, and the local police were very nice and encouraging. There was nothing at all negative about this new marathon, and I will definitely be back next year! Way to go Springfield, MO!

Needs more cheerleaders!!!

I did the Bass Pro Half Marathon last year. This was my second marathon and I was sooo disappointed at the spectator turnout. The last 2 miles through the neighborhood was grueling and felt like no man's land, with no spectators or cheerleaders. If we had more enthusiastic spectators it would have been much better!! Despite that, the finisher medal and cap were cool!! Will probably do it again next year.

Well organized marathon

Course: 4 stars only because we had to run through town for 6 miles or so; the rest was on trails, with resplendent fall colors. Organization: 4 stars only because there was one aid station that was abandoned after 4 hours (about mile 22 or 23). Spectators: awesome, when there were any; but out on the trails, there were just a few (no biggie for me as I train by myself anyway). Overall: a great marathon and I would love to do it again after my 50 states quest is done!

Nice race!

Just did the 1/2, and I liked it quite a bit. It is relatively flat. Sure, there are a few inclines, folks, but overall, it is quite manageable. Not a lot of spectators, but the ones that were there were cheering for all runners (for the most part). At the end there was a full breakfast buffet, with biscuits/gravy, eggs, milk, fruit, cereal, beer, wine, and stacks of newspapers on all tables. This is going to mature into a well-rounded and popular event.

They listened and improved

I've run this race both years now and I can see the improvement from last year to this year. Last year there were a few areas that could stand to be better, but it seems clear to me that the folks at Bass Pro read these comments and take them to heart: the finish line was moved outside the store, timing and results were more organized, they were smart enough not to promote it as a "flat and fast course" ;-), etc. The course isn't flat (surprise! - it's the Ozarks) but isn't incredibly hilly either, and running through the local greenways at the peak of fall color is a nice bonus. Spectators aren't that numerous (after all, we're talking Springfield, MO, not Minneapolis or Boston) but they and the course volunteers were enthusiastic nonetheless. And it was nice to come into a large banquet room with a stocked buffet and plenty of room to stretch out and recuperate. I do have to tip my hat to the organizers for rounding up a who's who of American distance running celebrities to participate/speak/sign autographs (and on the same weekend as the NYC Marathon, no less). I won a humble age-group award and got to shake hands with a receiving line of Bill Rodgers, Frank Shorter, and Dick Beardsley. I mean, how cool is THAT? Bottom line is that while it's nearly impossible to put on a perfect race, the folks behind this one seem committed to trying their best. I know I'll be back again.

Not sure I'd run it again this year.

So it was Bass Pro's first year doing this. I guess I'll give them a little extra slack for that reason. Good things first: the weather was great, and the food provided at the finish was pretty good. Very nice fans; not very many of them along most of the course though. This is probably a "first year thing," and it should improve in time. I never like "turn-arounds" on the course. Two-way traffic is always horrible; figure out a new course! The "park miles" were nice. As others noted, the medal is a shameful Bass Pro promo thing, probably the primary reason I may not run their full this year. Really didn't like the finish in the store at all! Way too crowded - there was no room to walk around. Don't do that again! It is not a flat course, but it's the Ozarks, so that's unavoidable. Brag about the elevation chart, instead of pretending it's flat. The elevation chart would make a great focal point on a finisher's shirt. Course needs more port-a-potties, at more locations. Luckily, I didn't need one.

Great Race - First Marathon

I have run several half marathons but this was my first marathon. I thought the entire race was fabulous. The weather and scenery were perfect. I was encouraged by the many, many volunteers and cheering friendly people. The aid stations were fantastic. I appreciated the huge mile markers. This was a great course. There was just the right number of hills. I will be back next year.

Good inaugural marathon... but improvement needed

Not a bad marathon. But there are some areas that need attention. The bad news first: - The race shirt was a long-sleeve technical shirt... that's it. This is the first marathon I've done where a finisher's shirt (or finisher's something... duffel bag, jacket, etc.) wasn't given. This may require a small increase in price but that's fine. Since most of us run with no illusions of winning, it's just nice to walk away with some gear. - I'll echo one of the comments below regarding the lack of music on the course. I had no clue how big of a deal this would be. This is the first marathon I've done where there weren't bands, gospel choirs, bagpipe players, etc. set up every mile or so. I think there was a high school band that you ran by twice - that's it. By not being distracted from the pain inherent to running a marathon the "voices" set in much earlier than normal. I would strongly recommend headphones if the organizers have no intention of improving this. - Lack of fan support. Coupled with the lack of music made for a lonely... and quiet 26.2 miles. - Where was the running expo? Pretty weak. The Ridge Runners store (10-minute drive from Bass Pro) was nice, though. At a minimum, they should have come and set up. The good news...: - Nice course. Running through the parks was nice and there were just enough (small) hills to keep it interesting. - Volunteer staff was awesome. - Finishing the race in the store was cool. In conclusion, if you can do without entertainment and fan support while out on the course, and don't need the little extras in terms of race amenities, then this race is for you. If you do like these things, I'd suggest looking elsewhere. On a side note, if you are going to do this race, I'd recommend checking out downtown Springfield. The Springfield Brewery was outstanding - good food and beer.

Fabulous Race

This was a fabulous first marathon for me. The weather and scenery were perfect. I was amazed and encouraged by the many, many volunteers and cheering people. The supporters were the best - and, must have been in place for hours and hours. The aid stations were fantastic. I appreciated the huge mile markers. Very nice course. Great massage at the end. The extra "first time marathon" shirt was a thoughtful touch.

Good event for its first time out

-I loved the course, especially along the Galloway and James river trail, but the last couple of miles through the neighborhoods were a bit draining. It was a little drab and made finishing a bit harder. -The course attendants and spectators were fantastic and their cheering and support really helped keep the motivation up. -I was a bit unsure of the accuracy of the chip timing because i made a point to start my run several minutes after the race began yet the difference in the net time and the clock time was only a few seconds. -I didn't like finishing inside the store. I don't need to be bombarded with bass pro advertising immediately following my race. The weather was beautiful outside and should have been taken advantage of instead of cramming people into the store. -The pasta dinner was fantastic and a wonderful idea. It was a great meal and a great idea to get all the runners together for food and socializing.

There's good and bad

The Good: The weather was AWESOME! The marathon course was great with HUGE mile markers for everyone. The course workers were great at making sure you knew where to turn and go. The aid stations were great. Obviously, being a smaller marathon you're not going to get a ton of crowd support but those that were out were great. The Bad: The website advertised music on the course and there was little to no music anywhere. That is a help while running. Another thing they could do to improve the marathon is organize the start so you don't have walkers in the middle slowing runners down. I was slowed by two packs of walkers. They should put pace signs up so people can get around people of similar speed or other walkers. Finally, where are the race results? They are not posted on the race website. The race website could be a little more detailed than it is. It seems like they are more concerned with promoting their store than the race.

Could have been better

The volunteers and aid stations were great, although I was looking for a portapotty for what seemed like forever. If you pre-register (before a given deadline), and request a specific shirt size, you should receive that shirt. Packets should be put together beforehand, with specified shirt size included. As a race director, I have to say I was most disappointed by the small, cheap-looking medals. If I am able to provide custom-designed, multi-colored, quality medals for my race of 120 people paying $13-$16 each, without a big-name corporate sponsor, Bass Pro should be able to come up with something a little more creative. A marathon finisher's medal should be something that you are proud of and can show off to people and maybe display in your home. This medal is actually smaller and less impressive than the one that my five-year-old received for playing t-ball this summer (same ribbon even).

Fine time in the Queen City

This was my first half-marathon in five years and I loved it. I'm sure it wasn't the most tightly organized race but the great pasta dinner and shirt alone was worth the price of admission. Loved the big mile markers. Loved the fact that you actually finished inside the Bass Pro building. I used to live in Springfield and would suggest showing off more of the town in future events, at least looping up through the university and downtown areas. I'd definitely do it again.

More emphasis on Marathon, less on Bass Pro

Not a bad effort for the first attempt at sponsoring a marathon. It was clear that Bass Pro did not expect the turnout as far as numbers of runners. Course pretty good, but certainly not 'flat' as advertised. Good scenery for the most part, esp this time of year. Volunteers, esp at aid stations, were superb, very helpful and friendly. Suggestions: 1) Do not finish race inside the store. I'm not buying anything right then, but I might puke on your floor (and would like the room to do so) 2) Clocks on the course to check time 3) Let go of a little $ and provide a finisher's medal, not a cheap advertisement for Bass Pro (I finished a marathon, not just an outdoor fitness festival.). The entry fee was not much less than larger races that give very nice finisher's medal. 4)More music on the course at strategic points to keep runners motivated and crowd entertained.

Beautiful Course w/lots of Support

I ran the marathon and was very impressed. The dinner was great - loved the speakers. The course was beautiful and volunteers awesome. Personally loved the fact that the marathon split off early and never 'passed' the finish area (many races you run the first half with the half-marathoners and are pretty depressed to see them finish). Aid stations were great - plenty to drink and lots of gel given out. Good help at all intersections (although at some would be nice to know in advance which way you'd be turning). To sum up: Loved dinner, shirts, course, volunteers, aid stations, weather. . . Didn't love so much: 'chip timing' (not sure it took into account when you crossed the start line), small medal (but not complaining because it was nice and detailed), finding results, hills (although I ran my best time EVER). Thanks for putting on a great event. One I would recommend and I've been to races around the country.

Great Volunteers

The great things were: the shirts, aid stations well stocked, great weather. I've ran several half marathons in St.Louis, but this was my first full to do. Next year the medals need to be larger and the miles must be marked on the course map at packet pick-up. I had several family members with me and they didn't know where the miles where to see me through out the race. I was very disappointed with this. Pick-up needs to be more organized. Your volunteers where some of the most awesome. You shouldn't change that at all. All and all it was awesome to complete 26.2 miles. One more thing I can't find out where we see our photos. Thank you

Excellent Marathon- especially for the inaugural!

I thought this marathon was great. Very well organized and friendly volunteers. Plenty of drinks at the aid stations and lots of good snacks at the finish line. I got the size shirt i wanted and i registered the morning of. I drove 3 hours from St. Louis that morning and then turned around and drove home afterwards and it was well worth it. I hope they have it again next year!

Great Sponsor - Rolling but Enjoyable Course

Outdoor World/Bass Pro Shops proved an excellent sponsor for a fun race (the free tickets to Wonders of Wildlife proved a nice benny). People were friendly, volunteers were strategically placed throughout the course and also before and after the race. Springfield proved a nice venue and the weather was extremely cooperative. Overall - a fun and even relatively scenic course - with some great fall foliage along the route. However, the course cannot really be called fast or flat - it was very rolling throughout. No particularly steep or long grades, but very few sections were even flat for short distances. I would also note some very steep turns - esp. in the trail section of the course (which was concrete) - I watched a wheelchair participant wait to cross a bridge when the race was going both ways across the bridge because there wasn't room for her to turn onto the bridge without obstructing oncoming runners. Also worth pointing out that there were only large shirts for half-marathon participants, the race results were hard to find and not very illustrative in the many ways runners like to 'keep track', and runners were never sent confirmation that there registrations had been received. All in all, still a well-run event and a fun course. The number of runners didn't overwhelm the venue - and didn't even consume all the post race food too soon (which was pretty good, by the way)!

Can't wait till next year!

Great run! Great choice of charities. The volunteers were the best! The course was beautiful, and having great weather helped a lot. The long-sleeve shirts are the best I have seen of any race. I did not get a medal though! I assumed it was only for people who did the full marathon, but the volunteer did not tell me anything!

Tough course for a flat-lander...

I had a great time participating in this race as a walker. I was hoping for a sub-6-hour finish time... but the hills just proved too tough for a Gulf Coast Plains resident. I finished in 6:06, which was a PR for me. I have never done a race this small... and I was impressed with the number of volunteers, and also loved the military presence near the finish line! Beautiful course! Great pre-race pasta dinner! I will agree that the packet pick up was a little disorganized, and the medal was kind of small... but overall, it was a great race experience... and getting two technical-fabric, long-sleeve shirts was a big plus. We also received a finisher's cap.

review of marathon

I was in the bass pro training group so i had the advantage of doing all my training on the course. I thought the course was great. I loved the big mile markers. The 6.2 mile marker made me laugh.(cute)I thought it was great that you provided gels at many of the drink stations. The volunteers were great and very encouraging and the band from Hillcrest was great!! I thought the pasta dinner was the best that i have seen at any race. However, i was extremely disappointed in the smallest medal i have ever seen given at a marathon. I also think there should be a difference in the marathoner bibs and the 1/2 marathoner bibs. I finished the marathon with a personal record and was very excited. I finished after 4 hours and was quite upset to find out there was no food left except ice cream sandwiches and milk and cereal. After you run a full marathon dairy doesn't sound very good. I thought the commentator did a great job but i did think that the awards after the race were a little to spread out. The massages were AWESOME. I loved that you were able to get the celebrities that you did. Thankyou

I had fun, but the marathon was poorly Organized!!

Over all I enjoyed the marathon, Springfield is lovely this time of year. However I feel the marathon was very poorly organized & executed. I'm not sure if I will do it again! This was not my first half marathon, & I would like to apologize to any first timers & to the people who traveled to compete in this race. They are normally better than this, don't give up, it gets better! I pre-registered in early September to save some time, which ended up being a waste of time. Because when I went to pick up my packet & shirt I found out I was not on the list. Even though I had my conformation # & I had pre-registered. Then they were out of my shirt size. And finally I was very disappointed after walk/running 13 miles to not get my medal or a hat. I was told one would be mailed to be, but, if they didn't have my information when I registered, how are they going to send it to me. I would liked to have seen more aid stations & potties. This race seemed to be one disappointment after another. These things seem petty, but when put all together add up. On the positive side of things, all the volunteers were great!! It was nice to have someone at all the intersections & to see some of Springfield's finest working the busy intersections! I am a local, & I was very excited about not having to travel this time. I know this was the first year, & it was a learning experience, hopefully next year is better.

Just OK

Where are the results? This needs lots of work. Only pre-race refreshment was Starbucks for sale. No porta-potties at the start, so long lines in the store. Aid station workers left the stations unattended in late stages of the marathon. Very Basic support. Either have a marathon or have an outdoor fitness festival. Bet you they put on a heck of a fishing event.

Perfect Temp

Before I comment on other areas of the event I have to begin with what a perfect day it was to race. Couldn't have been better! Other comments... 1. Perhaps it's me, but I haven't located the results. Are they listed and I overlooked them? 2. Water and energy drinks, be consistent on which side they're located, water right, drink left. 3. You've already heard, t-shirts and medals, better to have a few extra than entertain complaints. 4. Medals, perhaps an upgrade next year. Also, just an opinion, are the 1/2 medals nicer looking than the full? 5. I emailed more than a week prior to the race and asked the number of entrants for the full, answer was 1500. (?) 6. Mark our maps better regarding locations of mile markers. Not necessarily for the runners, but for the spectators and where they might be able to see competitors. 7. The word flat was used in the description of the course. Not exactly accurate. Most of the suggestions are minor but are easily implemented and could make for a better race experience. Overall-Nice day, nice race, nice people and definitely recommended.

Great race. Great organization. Great fans.

Yes, I got the T-shirt of my size. So, no complaint there, for the shirt was awesome. It was my first half-marathon race, and I had trained on the course, but I was still pleasantly surprised at the turning colors along our path, for it was either too green or too dark for me to see in training runs. I was also impressed with the organization, especially for the first-time event with a turnout larger than expected. Aid stations were well stocked, the pasta dinner was awesome, and a good choice of post-race snacks and drinks. I also was surprised to see so many spectators and fans along the course, cheering us on.

Response to Mr. Miller

First of all, this was not the second year - "inaugural" means that it was the first year. Second, the 6.2 mark was between mile 6 and 7, signifying the 10K mark, which was a corporate relay exchange point. The sign also said "Corporate Relay Marathon Exchange." All in all, I thought that the marathon was very well done for the first year. I think that many of the complaints are about things that will be ironed out as the marathon grows in the future.

Overall, an enjoyable experience.

Overall, it was a very memorable and enjoyable experience. The only issue I had was that this was my first half-marathon and I was pre-registered; however, I had to get a marathon shirt because they ran out of half-marathon shirts. Then on top of it, I didn't get a half-marathon medal because they ran out of those too. All and all, the crowd was great and the run was fun.

Fantastic Supporters!

The volunteers and spectators were extremely supportive! This was my first marathon and I was very motivated and pleased to see so many people cheering on all participants. It was a good course with rolling hills.

The beginning of great things to come

I've never had so much fun at a running event in my life. Not just a 'road race' an EVENT! There were so many activities that even the non-running family members had plenty to do. This is truly a family event. The course was challenging and well marked. The trails were beautiful with their fall colors. They must have had an in with Mother Nature because the weather was perfect. There were plenty of drinks at each throughout the course and the volunteers were so supportive. The sponsors were generous with technical fabric shirts and finisher caps and ALL the door prizes that were given away. The pasta dinner on Saturday was delicious and the celebrity speakers were inspiring. This is just the beginning for this great event. This one will grow exponentially.

It's a good start for a great event!

I ran the half marathon this weekend and thought it was good. I wondered why we didn't go to downtown as they have a great downtown area. The volunteers were awesome on the course! They need to mark the restrooms on the course map and the mileage. Besides that, the finish in the Pro Shop was too cool and very comfortable. Great job!

Weather cool, pace fast and great people.

Did not see any place to go to the bathroom; I saw people going by the trees. Drinks and spectators were great. Course was a little hillier than what I and several other people expected, but it was still very enjoyable. The miles were marked and made it very easy to follow. Had a great time, all in all.

Overall a great marathon

I registered the day before the marathon and received the shirt that I wanted. There was a little confusion as to where we were supposed to get the tickets to the pasta dinner. The pasta dinner was at 4:30 pm but no indication as to how late you could eat dinner. Arrived at 6:30 pm and they were cleaning up the room so decided to go out to eat. With setting clocks back 1 hour, it seems like you should still be serving at 6:30 pm. Please make the serving times clear in the future. The start was a little congested so consider starting the half and full at different times. Also, mark the starting corral with estimated finishing times. Volunteers were great and pleased to see E-Gel was provided, but this information would be helpful in the race description. The bottles of water provided at some stations are a great idea. The course was very nice, following the paved trail system in places with several sections being and out and back. There was someone to check off the runners to make sure they went all the way out. I didn't notice any major hills other than the bridge we went over. The elevation profile is kind of deceiving. This is a fairly flat course and accurately stated in the description. The drawing for prizes at the awards ceremony was a great idea to keep people. However, it went on a little long and the awards ceremony was a little lengthy as well. I noticed the results posted are a little strange. There is time and net time. It says the difference between everyone's net and chip time is 14 seconds. This cannot be the same for everyone. I had a difference of 33 seconds on my watch so my posted chip time is 14 seconds slower than I actually ran. For people trying to qualify for Boston 14 seconds could be the difference between qualifying and not qualifying. Please get your timing issues worked out. Also, there isn't a link to the results on the marathon page. I had to search for the timing company and found the results on their page http://www.ridgerunnersports.com/. I shouldn't have to look that hard for this information.

I had lots of fun

Despite some hiccups, I thought this was a beautiful race that was well organized by friendly people. The runs along the rivers were great, although, because of the relatively small number of marathon participants (300?), there were long stretches where I ran alone. The volunteers were outstanding, and I thought they did a commendable job for an inaugural event. I'll be back, and I look forward to it. My only complaint is that I thought the keepsake medal could be a bit bigger and at least mention that it represents a marathon event.

Great Race, Course, and Volunteers!

This was my first marathon, and I loved it! The guest celebs. were great, and so was the pasta dinner the night before the marathon. I loved the marathon's long-sleeve shirts, and the aid stations were very nice and helpful!

first year glitches

the weather and the course were absolutely wonderful. quite a good number of spectators for the small size of the field. great aid stations and police support at intersections. Pre-race pasta dinner with four featured speakers was outstanding. packet-pick up and expo were disappointing, but the biggest disappointment was having to wait over an hour for awards and still needing to leave before even 5% were announced so as not to miss our flight home. My friend and I probably placed, hopefully what was in the envelops will be mailed as they promised. Hopefully in future years they will be able to speed up results and awards.

Good run for a small town.

The running/bike trails in Springfield provided a great layout for the race. The people that came out to help at the aid stations were absolutely great. And the spectators that did show up were very friendly. As we crossed roads and affected traffic, I got the feeling that the runners were more of a hindrance to the rest of the town though. I could also tell that the bike-riders on the trail wanted nothing to do with us as they passed without comment or warning. I also agree with the other reviewer who asked, "Can't they keep bikes off the trail for this event?" I was also surprised that they had no timing or pace clocks placed anywhere on the course. If you weren't wearing a watch, you wouldn't know your time until you crossed the finish line. Although it may seem trivial, the finishing medals were the cheapest I've seen. My main concern is that it's now Monday morning after the race and nowhere on their site, or the local paper's site, do they have the race results posted. Overall the course was great, and the people were great; it's just the technical details of coordinating a race that were a little disappointing.

Not what I expected...

I finished the 1/2 marathon, with a new personal best, and was given a medal. I thought it was odd that it did not signify whether it was a full or half. Later a friend finished and got her 1/2 medal. It was then I realized I was given the wrong medal. When I went to switch it, they were OUT of medals. How can this be when I pre-registered? I know it's not a huge deal, but everyone wears their medals around after the race, taking pics etc., and I had nothing to show for running 13.1 miles or for the fact that I set a new PB. I was disappointed. I thought the race was a little disorganized.

Good first year of event. Enjoyable marathon.

I hope that Bass Pro continues its sponsorship of this event in the future. They had a few snags and newbie issues this first year, but I thought the marathon was very well done. The aid stations and volunteers did a great job. I was surprised at how many volunteers they had at every intersection. I had no problem registering for the race or with T-shirts. The expo was a little disappointing but they have something to build on. A special thanks to the service men and women "guarding" us on the last mile. I also really enjoyed the finish line indoors at Bass Pro. I've run some big marathons, like Chicago, and smaller ones as well, and I thought this was a very nice race - although they got really lucky with the nice weather this late in the year.

Good for their second year...

I live here in Springfield, so I was very familiar with the course going in. I love running these trails and have done so many times. I thought it was great to see them so integrated into the course. It gave it a much different feel than the "big city" marathons you normally see. For the race only being in its second year, it was well organized. A couple complaints... 1. There was a large sign between mile marker 5 and 6 that said "6.2." I think it meant 6.2 miles to go, but I'm not sure. Confusing. 2. The awards ceremony was very poorly done. The MC didn't seem to know what was going on and it took a lot longer to get the awards out than it should have. Like I said, all in all, it was done really well.

Great For First-Timers!

It was a beautiful course that definitely gave you a great tour of the city. And I agree with the shirt problem. It was my friend's first half-marathon, and all they had were those large sizes. But what gets me is that when planning for this event, you should probably anticipate purchasing more medium/smalls than the larger sizes. Overall I can't wait to run this next year!

A very enjoyable experience

Great course - trees in full color on beautiful trails and nice neighborhoods. It seemed like the whole city was there to support the marathon: police, medical, aid stations, bands and what had to be over a hundred volunteers. Perfect weather. A few more porta-potties would help and if we could keep the bikes off the trails for one morning a year? But this did not distract from a fantastic venue.

great shirts... if you got one

They clearly didn't plan ahead for not only the number of participants in the half-marathon, but the runners' SIZE. They ran out of all shirts but men's L and XL. I guess it didn't matter if you registered back in August and September like we did! What a letdown for my friend's first half. No shirt to show off her great accomplishment....

t-shirts

I was a participant in the half marathon and am extremely upset and disappointed in regards to the t-shirts. A friend and I both registered in early September and when we arrived on Sat. to pick up our packets we were informed they were out of medium and small t-shirts for the half marathon runners. Why was I asked to specify my shirt size upon registration if I wasn't going to receive a t-shirt. In every other race I've run, the shirts were included in the packet so that those that registered early were guaranteed a shirt. We worked very hard for this race and part of the reward is getting to wear your race shirt. I was also upset to hear we would not even be given a voucher or the option to give our name so that we would receive a shirt later. I'm sure there are many other runners that were displeased with this issue as well. I would love run this race again; however, I hope the packets will be put together differently next year. Did anyone else run into this problem? Thank you.

Trying to register online and in person I received no help from anyone. If they expect people from out of town to attend, their attitude should be helpful.

Strange age group classifications

Someone at Bass Pro that was a runner needed to review the age groups that were set up for the races Bass Pro is putting on. They are not at all like any races I've ever seen put on anywhere. In face, the age groupings are so strange, they look like typos. If Bass Pro wants this to be a big event in the future, they need to proper age group classifications.
