Overall, a great experience

This is a good course for a first-time marathoner, and this city loves its athletes, so they come out to cheer. Organization at the finish festival could certainly be better.

Great race, fantastic finish

This was a fantastically well organized and supported race. Volunteers were friendly, helpful, and plentiful. The course was very well marked, with roughly the first half through parts of Eugene and Springfield and the rest on bike paths along the river. Finishing in the re-built Hayward field was awesome, I can't imagine there is a nicer stadium dedicated to solely track and field anywhere. Expo wasn't huge, but appropriate for this size race. Pancake breakfast was great, thick fluffy pancakes Saturday (after 5k) and Sunday. Other post-race food was average, re-usable water bottle and bag were both nice. All in all a great race in Tracktown USA, well worth the trip if you're a 50 stater or just looking for a medium sized race in a relatively small/laid back city.

Nice course in a running town

This is a nice course with much of it in shade along the river. The marathon starts with a run southward through town going by Hayward Field (under construction) and the the University of Oregon. There are two hills in the first half that can slow one down a bit. The weather early in the day is cool so no overheating there. About at the 13 mile mark, you turn by Autzen Stadium to run along the Willamette and with a light breeze from the north, this is the best part of the course. Cross a pedestrian bridge and head back to the stadium. A section in the sun through some meadows and then a sprint back to end on the 50 yard line of the UofO stadium. Crowds are friendly and supportive. Weather tends to be mild. Nice selection of food at the end and a jazz band. The field of runners is well above the average with many posting very fast times. Plenty of nice places in town to eat. Lovely community.

Great marathon in Tracktown USA

This was my 47th marathon overall and my 35th state in my 50 state quest. This marathon definitely ranks in the top 10% of the marathons I have run in. Course: First half of the course is through a variety of city and residential areas. Second half is a asphalt/concrete bike path along the river. Finish this year was at Autzen Stadium instead of the usual Hayward Field due to construction. Though they advertise the course as flat, it really is rolling with a couple short steep inclines. Logistics: I flew into Portland and drive about two hours down I-5 to Portland. Hotels were a bit pricey and rooms hard to find unless you book early. There was parking at the stadium as well as a shuttle from a few different areas. Organization: This was a well organized race with water stops (water and gatorade) roughly every 2 miles. The race director communicated via their web site, Facebook, and emails. The race director kept you well informed in the days leading up to the marathon. In addition to the marathon there is a half marathon (same day), 5K (day before), and a kids run (day before). Expo: The expo was definitely on the small size for a medium sized marathon. There were about 4 running stores there and then about 8 to 10 other booths. It was held at the Lane Center on the fairgrounds. Shirts: They were green this year. There were unisex sized and woman shirts. I heard several runners complaining the shirts were running small, but my medium seemed to be true to size. Post Race: Every finisher was handed a high quality medal, a water bottle with the race logo, and a bag with food. Personally I found the food in the bag a bit lacking; I prefer to select what I want. There was other food available for sale. I would recommend this race for a first time marathoner, a 50 Stater, someone trying to qualify for Boston, and just about any other marathoner.

Fantastic Experience

Everything about this experience was fantastic. Organizers do everything with the participant in mind. Frequent hydration and gel stations strategically placed. Flat, fast, scenic and stimulating course. Nice finish festival. Cool medals. Weather was even perfect this year (50 and overcast).

Big Al's Comments

This was one of my most enjoyable marathons and I highly recommend it to anyone running in Oregon, especially since there is no more Portland Marathon. The course, organization and everything were just superb. Spectators, especially from the half way point on where we started running on a path were few and far in between. Finishing in the stadum was just plain awesome. This was my 68th marathon and 47th state.

a GREAT! option for your Oregon marathon

My 5th year in a row and still loving it. Fortunately the weather forecaster was wrong: again: and we had perfect running weather. Started on time. Ran like clock-work. Great aid stations and VERY frequent the last 6 miles, which is always appreciated. New medal design every year, and I loved this year's with the outline of the state of Oregon. And the finish line is fantastic at Hayward Field. Another great job by the entire team in Track Town, USA

Great race finishing on the Tracktown USA track

I have run seven marathons and the Eugene Marathon is, by far, my favorite. There is such a rich running focus in Eugene that you just feel like you are at the birthplace of running in America. The race is well organized and well supported. But, easily, the highlight of the race is getting to run the finishing stretch on the Tracktown USA track. The stands were full and it is the closest I will ever come to being able to feel like an elite runner.

Great Organization - beautiful location

This was my 30th marathon and 25th different marathon course. I trained harder than usual and managed to BQ for the first time in 7 years (I ran Boston in 2010 and 2011, and want to run it one more time). The weather was perfect, and the course profile was easy enough. My only gripe was that the bike path from miles 20-25 is made of concrete, rather than blacktop, so your legs will take a pounding there. Organization was top notch, and the expo was much better than I was lead to believe it would be. Great finish on the Hayward Field track! Plus Eugene itself is a cool town circa 1970 - do not miss the Saturday Market!

Top race on a beautiful and easy course

Top Notch Organization!!! I PR'd by 17 minutes!!! and it really is a BQ Course. Race Course goes through residential areas for almost 13 miles and the rest on the gorgeous woods surrounding the Willamete River. There are more hills than advertised but none to hard to worry about. The bike path that runs beside the river might be a bit boring for some people, but I completely enyojed it. Weather for 2017 race was simply perfect. We started with around 4°C and by the time I finished there were 12°C. I PR'd by 17 minutes!!! and it really is a BQ Course. Expo was small and the post race festivities were great. Would do this race again without doubt.

Great small marathon

Really enjoyed this beautiful marathon. Very little road running. Most is running next to willamette river. Couldn't have asked for a better day. 50s and sunny with a breeze. Not too hilly. Lots of water stops. Even though on the smaller end had folks every few miles. Thanks Eugene!

Nice race, but a bit dull

I'm writing this review 2.5 months after having had run it, and I gotta say I'm drawing a blank. That's not to say it was a bad experience. I remember the trip, overall, was fun. But the race, itself, wasn't memorable except the finish, and I can recall details of the other 7 races I've run this year. Finishing in Hayward Field was pretty special, tho.

Top notch race

This is truly a well-produced, well organized race. Easy pre-race logistics, great expo for a small race, scenic course (flat and fast) with a big finish, plenty of water stations, and great post-race food and festivities. Nice medals. Everything about this race is well planned and well organized. Bravo to the race organizers and volunteers!

Great Job

The volunteers were excellent. I wasn't expecting so many rolling hills. It was memorable to finish in Hayward Field. Only disappointment was that I was hoping to qualify for Boston, but needed the pacer. Pacer never showed up. The Beast Pacers that I talked to didn't seem very upbeat. Cliff Shot pacers are better.

Well done Track Town!

I ran the full marathon. Easy for friends to drop off near start line. Near start found port-o-potty's with no wait time! People actually placed themselves accordingly in corrals. Lots of space in corrals. I was not hindered by slower runners nor did i feel like was going to be run over. Adequate hydration stations every 1-2 miles. Well organized, Gatorade first water second. Bathrooms on course. More spectators than I expected. Some stations with people dressed in costumes was fun. Easy for spectators to see their runners multiple times if they wanted. Course was less flat than expected. Only 2 significant hills but lots of short mini hills, that felt 'big' in the latter half. Traffic control was excellent, never felt like I was going to be run over. Good finish line experience. Was handed space blanket, marathon branded reusable bag filled with stuff and there was a choice or drinks. Massage wait was an hour long, but was able to use the foam roller, yoga mat, stretch rope station which was nice touch. Beer tent. I would have liked to have seen more vendors with free food samples. Expo wasn't huge, but there were a fair amount of vendors with running staples as well as products I had not seen elsewhere. Overall well done. I would recommend this race to others.

Excellent Event!

I really enjoyed this race in spite of my poor training! I really struggled to finish this given I hadn't really accomplished any long runs prior! I loved the city, the fans, the organization, and all the history from this marathon!

This race should be on every marathoner's list

This is my new all-around favorite marathon (past races include Big Sur, Santa Rosa, Napa Valley and CIM). The two things that stand out for me was the location (Tracktown USA) and the course. This town takes running very seriously and hosts national and international competitions. You can feel it in the air. The course is ideal - not only flat but very beautiful. The race starts and ends on the University of Oregon campus and has a great mix of scenery - paved residential streets, wide shaded bike paths and the final eight miles along the Willamette River. The thought of running the last 100 yards on the famous Hayward Field kept me going. Very well organized event with excellent spectator support. The expo was a little underwhelming.

I loved this marathon!

Eugene was my first marathon, and this is a great first marathon. I chose Eugene for its fast and flat course, and the date, because I wanted to qualify for 2015 Boston. Eugene delivered! I was worried about heat in a summer marathon, but I trained in Sacramento so that helped. I was lucky and the weather was perfect: some clouds, not too hot. Running along the river was beautiful and shady, loved seeing the giant 'O' as I ran past the football stadium, enjoyed the many supportive fans but didn't mind the quiet places in the park, and enjoyed the green neighborhoods at the start. The finish area was phenomenal and uncrowded, with good stuff to eat and drink. Definitely beat sitting on a curb. And finishing on the track was just awesome for a non-elite like myself! I liked the Expo and benefitted from the speakers I heard. I highly recommend this city and this marathon. We enjoyed the area and the restaurants a lot as well. Thanks, Eugene!

Highly recommend this race.

This was my 31st state and arguably the most gorgeous course. The miles on river hugging trails were in great shape and offered lots of greenbelt and nature views. Starting by and finishing inside Hayward Field helped runners feel a connection to top track athletes who've run there over the years. The flat course makes this a consideration for folks seeking a Boston qualifier. The huge (FREE) massage and foam roller tent in the finisher area was too good to believe. I highly recommend this race.

Change of dates

The race overall was great, I look forward to the Eugene Marathon every year. It's always so big and there are always people cheering on the runners. But this year was the exception; changing the date from middle end of May to the END of July. First of all, there was MAYBE a quarter of the amount of runners there has been in the past years, which was super disapointing... I always look forward to the huge crowd, this seemed like one of your small town marathons you sign up for before the BIG Eugene Marathon. Also the expo was soo much smaller and for some reason they wouldn't give us our tshirts and said that they would be sent in the mail. Well it's Aug 15, and I still have yet to recieve mine. So overall, great run, I love the course, but the ligistics need to go back to the way they were. Sorry Eugene marathon, you broke my heart.

Great race and I would not change a thing

This a great race with a very nostalgic finish on Hayward field. The volunteers were very helpful and the comments regarding the trash cans / hoses are ridiculous. I drank from every station and had no issues. Moreover, this is a PR course. I exceeded my PR by 9 minutes. The course lends itself to a nice combination of small gentle up and down hills. The only improvement opportunity that I would suggest is looking at better parking arrangements.

Over Rated Marathon

The water situation needs to be addressed. They were filling garbage cans lined with garbage bags from a hose. this is EXTREMELY unsanitary. Hoses have bacteria and chemicals in them, and neither hoses or garbage bags are manufactured for consumption purposes. My husband and I both got very sick in tummy around mile 20. The health department needs to stop races from providing water in this fashion. Perhaps my view of 'scenic' is different than others, but my husband and I both thought it was not scenic. It was isolated and quiet, but not scenic. I won't run this again. Glad I did, but never again. The road surfaces were rough in certain areas. A lot of spectators rode bikes next to participants for many miles. A lot of public use on the course while on the river section: almost got run down three times by people on bikes flying through the participants. There is one part of the course where the road slants drastically....hard on the knees. Very very very hard to get a hotel because of the Jr. track championships. I loved being in track town, but won't waste my time and money again. There are far too many nice courses in the NW, and this rates last on our list.

Excellent course and great weather for July

Truly a destination marathon located in historic Eugene, ending in Hayward Stadium. Oregon makes a wonderful vacation opportunity to vist incredible places like Crater Lake, Mount Hood, drive along Pacific Coast Highway and even Redwoods National Park in Northern California before or after the marathon. Low humidity really makes a difference where 70 or 80 degrees does not feel too bad. Of course if you run a sub 4 hour marathon you will be finishing when it's still relatively cool. Course is mostly flat with few elevations that are not too challenging. The cons - few spectators on portions of the course, part of the course is on concrete - while most is either on the road or asphalt bike path. The portion on the bike path is NOT closed to cyclists and there was an idiot who was riding in between runners around mile 22 at a fast pace! Some of the water stops were not properly arranged. Volunteers handing out water were standing too close and bunched together. While on the course I stopped to assist a runner who had collapsed. I waited along with some spectators until paramedics arrived. The paramedics seemed to be taking their time strolling up casually. This is not a negative against the organizers of the marathon but a concern regarding the attitude of the local EMT . I hope the lady is fine and be back on another marathon course soon. Medal was boring and not particularly memorable. Recovery area was a definite 'A' - well organized finishers' area with volunteers providing ice wraps, massage therapist students (mine was awesome), fair food including pancakes, chocolate milk, bagel, peanut butter, rice crispy treat and Clif bar sample. I wished there was also a bottle of electrolyte solution. Event website was well organized and updated quickly with results afterwards. Hotel accommodations can be difficult due to coincidence with junior international track and field competition. There are not many hotels in walking distance. If this marathon becomes more popular the organizers will have to consider. this. Expo was small. Speakers were not very interesting at least for me (sorry). Pace group at least the 4:00 leaders were awesome. Good job Darrin! Wished I could have caught back up with you.

Great race, great spectators

This was my 7th marathon. I am amazed at the level of organization, attention, and services available at a relatively small marathon. One of the best parts was the placement of water stops and cheer zones, particularly in the last 10k. Nothing beats hearing that next mile marker before you can see it. It really helps you keep going. The course was very nice. There were lots of changes in scenery and just enough twists and turns to keep it interesting. The spectators were as amazing as you would expect in Eugene. Where else will you be encouraged to 'settle in' in a calming voice in the middle of mile 2? Throughout the course, there were fantastic marathon groupies following us. I counted at least 7 bikes rigged with music and several spectators with funny signs were following the runners as they progressed. In the last mile, everyone was yelling 'you are almost home!' I know they were referring the Hayward, but Eugene made the whole race feel like home.

A good race but why July?

The Eugene Marathon is a good race. For 2014 it was rescheduled to the end of July which is too warm for a marathon. Although the start time temperature was comfortable, it was around 80 degrees when I finished. The high temperature for the day was 91.

Best Post Finish Area Ever.

I have run 22 marathons ranging from small out of the way races in remote places to large events like Los Angeles, Disney World, and Boston. I have to say that this race has the best post race runner's area by far. Instead of being shuttled through a corral set up on a street, this one was set up on a field behind the track with the idea of allowing the runners ample time to recover. The runner's only area had tables and seating where participants could sit and eat their pancakes, bagels, and chocolate milk. Sure beats sitting on the curb after running for 3 hours. I was very happy to have a chair to plop down into while regaining my composure. Once in the family reunion area, there was a live band, a large massage tent, and an even larger stretching tent. Finishing on Hayward Field was great. I don't know that there are prettier gates on the planet than the green iron gates that mark the entrance to the track. Of course it may just be because I was hurting a lot as I approached the finish. The course was very well laid out with just enough elevation change to keep the legs from getting too stale on continually flat terrain. I could have done with a little less concrete path, though. There may not be the huge crowds in Eugene, but the fans that were out there understand running. I was never told 'You're looking great,' or 'You're almost there,' (even though I still have the last 10k to go). Rather there were signs such as '6 miles to beer,' and 'Go Random Stranger, Go' to keep us amused. With the way the course is looped, spectators have the capability to watch their runners at several points without too much traveling on the congested roadways. The cheering spectators in Hayward Field, lining the track and filling the lower portion of the grandstand were great. I have never heard a field of runners get so quiet so quickly as we did for the moment to honor the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing. Rather than set a somber tone, the memory of what happened in Boston just 2 weeks prior was handled in a way that gave us (I talked to several runners after the race) a sense of pride to be running our own 26.2. Other than our shuttle bus taking a few wrong turns on the way back to the hotel, this event went great. I highly recommend this race to anyone.

Perfect Day

I traveled from N.J.to Eugene to cross off Oregon and was very pleased with my decision! Most of the 'cons' from previous years comments were addressed. The expo was just the right size, easy to find, no crowds, free parking and just enough shopping. The volunteers were very helpful with my questions as an out of town guest. We ventured over to Hayward Field to get a feel for the finish & to try & figure out spectator parking for race day. There is so much history here and it was great to run in the foot steps of legends. We found 'Pre's Rock' and even met one of Steve's college professors who knew the history of his accident. Eugene was a great town to stroll around and have lunch. Props to the staff at The Holiday Inn Express in Springfield. We had food & grab bags at 4:00 a.m. and were walking distance to the shuttles. The buses were great and dropped us in front of gear check near the start. The tribute to Boston was touching just before the start. The corrals and wave start were perfect. Props to the Cliff Bar Pace Team who was very motivating and dead on with the splits for all 26.2 miles. Crowd support was good & the weather was perfect. Plenty of water stops, pot-a -potties and even some music on the course. Con: My wife had a terrible time getting to the finish despite leaving our hotel at 8:30. The road closures were not defined the night before, she got lost and could not find parking. She missed my finish and was a basket case when I found her. This is tough because parking is so limited near the finish. Spectators were not allowed on the shuttles as part of the extra security from the Boston Marthon experience. Not sure how an out of towner could have handled this any better. All in all a great race!

Good Race for a PR

I registered for this race after reading about it in Runner's World. Pros - 1) The course is relatively flat. I think some of the comments are a little exaggerated on how flat the course really is. There are definitely sections that are rolling, and much of the course is at least at a slight incline. However, there are many downhills to compensate, and the largest hills on the course are not very big. 2) The course is very scenic. I had never been to Oregon, and the scenery is truly unique. The many bridges along the course were a highlight for me. 3) I thought they did a good job with the aid stations. This is an area most runners complain about, but I think they got it just right - about every other mile until the last 4 or 5 miles, where they had it every mile. Most of the aid stations were manned by kids, and they were super professional and helpful. Cons - 1) The concrete was a very real challenge. Many of the comments on here echo this, and for good reason. I should have trained on more concrete, but my focus is always to make it to the starting line healthy. My advice to anyone running this race for the first time would absolutely be to get some concrete training in - your legs will thank you for it. 2) I'm generally not a fan of mixing in the half and full marathoners. Because the course is open for 7 hours for the full, you have quite a lot of half marathon walkers coming in to the finish around the same time as most of the mid-pack full runners. At the end of an exhausting race, the last thing i want to be doing is dodging walkers. There were people around mile 25ish trying to separate them out, but it didn't seem to be working very well - something to work on for next year. 3) I'm not sure what happened with the 'Running with Legends' theme. It's all over their website, and even on the back of the medal, but if it was actually represented on the course, I never noticed it. I thought each mile marker was supposed to be labeled with a Eugene legend. If they were, it didn't stand out. It's a cool theme, so they should put more emphasis on it. Overall, it was a good race - can't complain about a PR, and this is definitely a PR friendly race. A little hard on the legs and sometimes congested, but overall pretty good. Worth running once.

BEST CROWD SUPPORT

OMG what a FANTASTIC marathon. I am in the process of running a marathon in all 50 states. I had Eugene picked out for my Oregon state and it was such an emotional experience running into historic Hayward Field. I am not built for speed. My finish times are around 4:20 but at the Hayward Field moment I sprinted like a Jamaican Olympian and ran out of breath and at the same time I was engulfed with emotions! The crowd support was out in force. There must have been hundreds of children eagerly waiting for a high-five. Adults were cheering on every single runner it seemed not only their significant runner! Most had Oregon hats/t shirts/jackets on. Many had creative signs and noise makers...they were all simply and genuinely happy to be there to cheer us all on! This was my 59th career marathon and it takes the cake for crowd support. The race director Richard also was great in communicating information about the race when I called him. Also the feed zone had fresh made to order pancakes, bottles of chocolate milk, bagels with peanut butter in little dixie cups, cookies, chips. It was a great race all the way around. Track town did it right!

Great for first time marathon

This was my first full marathon, but I've done several halfs. They could not have organized this better. The course was flat and great for a PR. The city gave us plenty of room on the streets. About 1/3 or the course was on nice, wide bike paths along the river. The crowd support was amazing. Eugene loves their runners. Some of the signs the students made were hilarious. 'Run quieter, I'm hungover.' The finish might just be the best of any marathon. running into legendary Hayward Field with a stand full of people cheering and seeing yourself finish on the jumbo-tron was incredible. They even had a live link on the website to watch the finish. There is nothing like making it back to the hotel room, pouring a glass of champaign and watching more runners come in.

Very nice Destination racer

I came to Eugene to run my Oregon race and feel I chose wisely. Running in 'Track Town USA' and on Hayward Field is just to cool. The expo is about what you'd expect from a mid-sized race like this. Big enough to pick up last minute supplies or souvenirs but not an all day Mega shopping experience (which suits me just fine). I got my packet and some gel very quickly and only hung around to hear Meb speak. That was a nice perk. The course itself is nice. It is quite flat. We hit a small hill around 4 miles and then a larger one at mile 7. Neither hill is overwhelming and after that there is barely a roller to be found. The second half is run on a paved bike path along the Williamette River. This is a nice section that the halfers miss. As Advertised the race ends on Hayward Field and running on that historic setting and seeing youself up on the Jumbo tron as the announcer calls your name really caps the day. The medal is nice (this year's had Hayward Field) and you get a nice long sleeve tech shirt (Halfers got a short sleeve). I can never eat much after a marathon but for those of you with stronger constitutions you could get pancakes after the race. My main criticism is that the race felt to me like it had grown some in recent years but the infrastructure and planning hadn't kept up. There weren't enough porta-potties. I got back in line for one last time at 6:30 and didn't get close to the front when I finally bailed and headed for the start line. Tons of folks were just using the bushes and I'm sure the U of Oregon folks were not happy about that. Also there were only 3 corrals and that wasn't enough. The roads stayed very congested for miles. I didn't feel as though I could settle into a steady pace until after mile 4. This over crowding also made the early water stops a real mess. The volunteers at those early stops were working their butts off. Otherwise the race seemed to be well organized. The shuttle buses worked well for me. Fans support was, like the expo about what you'd expect for a mid-sized race. Small pockets of enthusiastic folks separated by long quiet sections (which is fine by me). Weather was near perfect this year and having lived in the Pacific Northwest in the past this is what you can expect in late April. I ran my final tuneup on Pre's trail and made the pilgrimage to Pre's Rock. If you come to Eugene try to do the same.

A Spot-on Marathon

Eugene had the whole package for the 3 of us from NM great restaurants, an enthusiastic and well-run expo, scenic-enough course, an opportunity to hear Meb, a beautiful campus with blooming trees, and a relaxed hippie vibe. I don't need many spectators, but the ones that were out knew the drill. And the icing? Running a Friday evening casual 3 miler with Lauren Fleshman (on her elliptigo) on a super-inspiring, little advertised run with the Eugene Running Company. I set my sights on a PR and BQ and nabbed both. Yeah, it hurt the last 4 miles, but as soon as I saw Hayward and knew I would be on that historic track the pain transformed into energy. What a feeling.

Well done and would run again

Entered to have a shot at BQ and to train with a friend who was running Boston 2 weeks earlier. Really enjoyed the atmosphere of the town and the expo. Traveled from Alabama, so a bit of an 'event' marathon for myself and 2 other runners. Website, communication, and packet pickup all easy. Expo better than I expected, boosted by opportunity to meet and take picture with Meb. Transportation and start organization fine. As per most races, not enough portable toilets pre race. Course beautiful and flat. We were fortunate enough to get fantastic weather (40s-60s w/sun). Only a couple significant hills and really didn't affect the effort. Thought the lanes were a little narrow at times, even late in the race-however, it was usually b/c you were on scenic trails, so the pros outweighed the cons. Tables could have been laid out a little better at aid stations-had a couple episodes of not being able to get a drink b/c of the setup. Was a little disappointed at volume of folks at course-side; town certainly supports running and those present were enthusiastic, but only patches of crowds here and there. Postrace was great-pancakes, chocolate milk, chips, drinks, postrace massage, and of course, Heyward Field. Tons of room in recovery area and transportation was easy. In summary, wouldn't hesitate to run again. Only reason I didn't do as well as expected was my hitting the wall at 22, nothing to do with the course. Would recommend.

Room for improvement

I've run this marathon every year and the race course is generally good, but I think the start should be staggered between the half and full marathon, and the route for the half should take better advantage of the river routes. I understand splitting the race earlier would require additional timing spots, but I think the half would be more enjoyable if there were fewer miles on city streets and more on the river path. If the half started say, an hour later, this would put the finishes for the first runners from each race closer together, which would make it more interesting for spectators at the end.

Great Marathon Experience

This was my 3rd marathon and my best experience overall. Great course. Friendly support and spectators. Very well-organized. Perfect weather (50ish at start). Loved running by the stadiums and up and down the river, through the parks. Enough runners to have someone around you but not crowded. Only negative- ran out of my size shirt at expo- bummer because I had registered ahead of time but not a huge deal. Will definitely try to do this race again!

A super small Marathon

What a great place to hold a Marathon and the organizers do a great job. Although this is a smaller Marathon they get it right. Well run with all the things you need to run a great time. Course has a little hill early on but miles of flat easy running. The weather was perfect, Pace Leaders were fantastic, the field is fast (where else would a 3:40 not be in the top 20% of the field), miles well marked, water stops plentiful, medal and T-shirt were great. It is super easy to get around, to the start, home after the race, heck, anywhere in town. Everyone was so nice, so friendly. Eugene is an interesting town with everything you need for a nice Marathon weekend, hotels for everyone, lots of good food and a college / hippy feel that is just fun. I highly recommend this race to anyone wanting a fun weekend topped off with a BQ and a PR.

Eugene's Got it on the dot!

I was so excited to see Meb at the Expo. He signed my race ready tee and bib. He's local, from Mammoth Lakes, CA and me being from Bishop so I have the altitude training year round and IT DOES HAVE BENEFITS (ENERGY!). I do agree that they should stag start times between the full marathoners and half. Should be 1 hr. in between. Seemed it took forever before packs opened up. Part of the course was like running on a car race-way and there was no flats; had problems with ITB after that. The Gatorade was really watered down until the last couple of water stations then got better. It was terrific finishing into Hayward stadium and hearing the cheering crowd's. Great spread of food at the finish. One of the security personnel at the end of the finish into the food area wouldn't let a sick gal go back through, he told her to find a trash can in the food area and use it, but she then convinced him to let her go back into the medical aid tent area. Have sympathy please... Bus shuttle's worked out well back to the Hilton after the race and the wait time was minimal. If Oregon is one state you need to check off, Eugene is definitely worth it. Oh and yes there are hills (especially mile 7), so hillwork pays off.

Fast, mellow, fun

I wasn't sure what to expect from this race and had a 'what the hey, just go run, get it done, go home.' however, I really enjoyed it! I will definitely go back and do it again. Also had fun in Eugene. Stayed right by campus, and the football spring game was on Sat. Students were out everywhere having fun, made for a great atmosphere all around. Pros: * The course was very pretty - at one point early on you could see fog settled in the treetops around Amazon Park. Very Northwest scene. * Excellent organization * Great vibe among racers and spectators. Everyone was friendly and calm - I didn't come across the freaked-out, scared to death, pre-26.2 head cases you usually encounter. * Friendly, helpful volunteers Cons: * Far, far, far too few portalets on the course. You can have 500 at the start, doesn't matter at all when you're gripped by GI distress at 7.5, 9.5, 15, 19, etc. PLEASE have them at least every other mile. (Calif. Intl. Marathon are the best at doing this.) * Roads were narrow going through neighborhoods and got bottlenecked a lot. i was weaving around and going on the sidewalk too much. More and smaller corrals to spread folks out from the beginning would help.

Good course to set a PR on

Seeing Meb talk the day before got me sooo pumped for this race. You feel so much excitement and energy as you start this race next to Hayward where so many amazing runners have ran. The weather was perfect. Pacers were spot on, and there was an adequate number of racers around you so you were never alone. I had trained to run the course at a 7:05 pace, unfortunately 10 days before I strained my IT band doing some polymeric exercises. Tried to warm it up, but fell off my pace when I started to run with a limp. Super bummed because I seriously think this is the course where I would have set a big PR. I wouldn't say it is the most beautiful course, but is organized and does many of the little things other races don't do (electronic goodie bags, cheap race photos).

Nice race but could be better

Traveled from North Carolina to Eugene. Had a very nice extended weekend trip to a race I have always wanted to do. Overall a good trip. Pros: - Pretty flat course with good chance of cool temps - Nice Nike Dri-Fit shirt - Nice finishers medal - Free post race massage - Hayward finish line Cons: - Very crowded start. - Not nearly enough greenways/trails. - LOTS of concrete in the second half - Expo was not good at all. Had high hopes for 'Track Town USA'. Suggestions: - So much history is at Hayward. Would be great to offer some guided walking tours on the Saturday before the race. - You need more corrals and they need to be enforced. A separate start for the half would help too. - Move the expo and packet pickup to the Basketball arena. - If you have a speaker like Meb, don't do it in a hotel lobby. Reserve a room where people can hear and really enjoy it more.

Solid racejust needs a few tweaks...

This is a northwest gem with a lot going for itjust needs some details worked out. Pros: Priced well. Bib has your name on it. Eco-friendlyno wasteful brochures, etc, recycle bins at all events. Simple expo; easy packet pick-up. Able to exchange shirt if stock allows. Host hotel has convenient shuttle to start. Race starts on time. Weather was PERFECTcloudy skies, 55 degrees for 2/3 of the race. Mile markers very visible. Post-race food abundantincluding pancakes. Great medal. Course has breath-taking beauty and scenery. Route mostly flat with some downhill stretches and one relatively good-sized hill at mile 7. Friendly water stops. Many Gu and banana stops. Impossible to take a wrong turn on the course. Great spectators but not a ton of them. Results posted quickly. Great restaurants, brew pubs all around. Saturday Market nearby. Very friendly and hospitable folk throughout the area. Cons: Corral entry points hard to find. Restrooms plentiful in start area but set up so lines to use them couldn't que up. Bag drop in odd placewell behind corrals. No clock at the start. Only one clock on the course (half-way point). No consistency in water stopssome had Gatorade first, water secondothers vice versa. Some volunteers had gloves, others not. MAJOR LAPSE: mile 16 ran out of cupsthere was no water for 4.5 miles (last water stop was at mile 14no cups/water until 18+). Some camber to watch out for mid-race. No signs in post-race area to reunion area, to shuttles, to amenities. Most all of these things easily fixable. The course is beautiful. The vast majority of runners are fast/faster than mostgood place to run among some talent in the 'rank and file'. Finish times for most were very good. Weather was outstanding. Finishing on Hayward Field a treata lot of history, running lore, and Nike abound. Would like to run this one again.

perfect memory

When I decided I want to run Boston, I had to pick an qualifying marathon. I decided on Eugene for many reasons - location, flat course, timing and Eugene being a mecca for running. It was a perfect experience. I qualified for Boston by 17 minutes and this was my first marathon. The Clif pacer was amazing. The post race area with instant results printed out for me was nice. The field size is big enough to have a big race feel, but small enough to make things manageable. Finishing on Hayward Field was awesome.

Absolutely Amazing!

Everything about this marathon is first-class. It has many of the things that big marathons have, perhaps with the exception of the expo. There is nothing bad about the expo. The size of it is about right, but if you want to spend the whole day walking and checking out the expo and buying merchandise, maybe this doesn't fit the bill completely for you. But if you are there to run a race, the size of it is just right. There is plenty of free parking. Meter parking on Sunday is also free. I parked just right on the street right by the Hilton, the host hotel, on race day. The Course: Beautiful, scenic and fast. There is only one noticeable hill around mile 7. Some other small and short inclines. But if you have trained for hills, there are doable, if not easy. Quite a few gradual declines as well. You run cross the beautiful Willamette River. The nine miles of bike paths across different parks, sometimes with trees on both sides, are just as invigorating and welcoming. You finish in the track at Historical Hayward Field, where you family and friends can watch on the stand and/or the big screen. Organization: Every mile is well marked with big and tall blue mile flag marker; you just can't miss it. If my memory serves me correctly, they have clocks and mats at 10K, the halfway point, and the 20M mark. Plenty of porta-potties and water stations, with Gatorade and water on both sides manned by kind and enthusiastic volunteers. Clif Shot was offered on course, though only at a couple of stations. The bus rides to and from hotels are frequent. Bag drop-off and pick-up are easy. Everyone is so friendly. Your name is printed on your bib. Though there aren't as many varieties as some other marathons when it comes to post-race refreshments, they have plenty of the items they do have on offer. They even have people making fresh pancakes! You can go and obtain a printout of your individual preliminary results - your net time, 10K, half and 20M splits right after your race pretty much right away. You can even have your picture taken and put into a plastic ID-type of neck-hanging batch and take home with you FREE. Spectators: There are plenty of spectators for this size of marathons, and they are all extremely friendly. Be prepared for them to call out your name and give your high-fives and encouragement along the way. Make sure your book your accommodation early, at least two months or earlier in advance, or else you are going find that most of the hotels and B&Bs are solidly booked, even with over a month before the event. I have done eight marathons. This one has been the best! Well done, Eugene!

Great course, finish, and post-race food!

I grew up in Eugene, so I've really wanted to run this for awhile now, but 2010 was my first year. My sister and I both ran the half. While the expo made you feel a bit like a hamster in a habitrail, everything else was exceptional. This was my 6th half in two years. Great, flat course. I, too, PR'd. I thought the water stations were fine, and I liked the bananas at mile 9. The post-race food was the best! Subway, pancakes, and lots of snacks - yum. I've run much larger races (too crowded) and smaller races (too little swag and not chip-timed), but this one was just right! This Goldilocks will definitely be signing up for 2011.

A scenic run with an historic finish line

I traveled to Eugene anticipating a fantastic finish but not realizing how enjoyable the entire week would be. Pros: - Finish on Hayward Field - Beautiful course - Good support - Friendly volunteers and organizers - Frequent and well-supplied water stops - Frequent and plentiful port-a-potties - Feather banners for mile markers - Welcoming city residents pleased to have a marathon there (How many times have you seen retirement home residents sit outside in the cold to cheer runners?) - Free tickets to the Oregon Relays before the race Cons: - Small/crowded expo (not a big deal to me) - Split for full/half needs better marking - More concrete on the route than I expected - Race has grown to the point where it could use more than two corrals Adding Pre's trail to the route would be a nice addition, but may be difficult given the number of runners. I have to say that I ran this one injured and did not come near my goal. But the finish was so exhilarating that it was easy to forget any disappointment and enjoy the moment. A great run!

Cool Race But Growing Pains

Good race overall, but there are a few things that need attention (mostly due to growing pains, I'm sure). Cons: 1) Desperately need a longer starting corral and possibly a seeded start. It was really (almost dangerously) crowded for the first 4 miles or so. 2) There were no mainstream gels at expo; I had to drive to a running store to get some. Also, people aren't going to all of a sudden chance it and start using Liquid Gold the day of the race. What was that stuff? 3) Expo was too big for the area provided and VERY disorganized. 4) Water stations need a lot of work. Keep them on straightaways instead of turns, make them longer, and work on the organization (water first or Gatorade first, or always on the same side). 5) In the city races that I've done in the past, owners of cars are notified not to park on the course or they would be towed. There were cars everywhere, including people trying to pull out into the crowd. This was made worse because it was so crowded at the beginning. 6) Would like to see more timing sensors. This is a little nit-picky, I realize. I just like to analyze my results, and this race had the fewest of any CITY races I've done in the past. It also seemed like it would be really easy for people to cheat, because there were no chip sensors at the end of the first out-and-back. Pros: 1) Finishing on Hayward Field (enough to make me forget most of the cons I mentioned). 2) Shuttles were really efficient. 3) It was cool that they kept a video of the finish line so you can see what you looked like coming in. 4) Cool course overall.

Top-notch race, first-class experience

As a senior citizen runner, Eugene and Hayward Field are truly legendary. It was a positive treat to be "Running in the Footsteps of Legends." Not sure if I am now a legend myself, as a result - maybe just a "legend in my own mind," as they say. Great event for such a new one. Some growing pains - partly due to rapid growth - to be totally forgiven if organizers learn. Expo needs a new site. Water stations need some attention, particularly the first one that didn't get the memo and had water on one side and sport drink on the other - you could not get both. Hayward Field finish made me feel like I was a legend. I was tired by then, but anything but running as hard as I could go was not an option after passing those gates! Well done. I will almost certainly be back next year.

Finish on Hayward Field - Priceless!

Lovely small-town marathon. We came to Eugene in '08 for the Olympic Track and Field Trials and came back when we heard the finish would be on the track at Hayward Field. We had run the last half of the course on a long run and knew how beautiful it would be (concrete not withstanding). Pros: 1. Finish on the track 2. Shuttles from hotel 3. Plenty of porta-lets 4. Enthusiastic spectators 5. Nice technical shirt Cons: 1. Terrible pasta dinner. Flimsy paper plates and no place to sit, with red tomato sauce?!! 2. Crowded expo. The Hilton had way too much going on. 3. What was that Liquid Gold stuff? Why not name brand gels? 4. The water tasted terrible. Was it tap water? I finally got some from some spectators who saved the day. 5. My brother (his first marathon) lost his chip and we were told there was a help table where he could get a new one. We never could find it so he ran without one. His fault for losing it, but a real shame. These are picky things, but they're easily remedied. This was my third marathon, and my husband's 26th. We've run lots of halves of all different sizes. I would recommend this highly.

Great Small-Town Marathon

This was my second marathon, and my first time to travel for one. Pros: Incredible finish on Hayward Field - please keep this for future marathons. Great organization, from shuttles to finish. The weather was PERFECT! Cons: Only downside was that I almost got hit by a guy on a bike on the trail. It is hard to control your movement from side to side after 20+ miles, and I couldn't get out of his way fast enough. Some volunteers on the course saw what happened and commented on how rude the cyclist was. Problem could be solved by changing the course, but it is so beautiful along the river that it would make more sense to just close it to bike traffic.

Awesome race!

Course: PR for myself and many others that I spoke to. You won't find many faster courses at this time of year in the western part of the country. Not entirely flat for the first half, but the hills were minor, and had a minimal effect on the overall time. A few minor, critical comments about the course: 1. Half/full split at mile 10 was unclear to some. They could have used a prominent sign rather than a single volunteer directing traffic. 2. Concrete on the bike path was a bit tough on the legs, but at least it was all flat. 3. Things got crowded in mile 25 when the half an full converged. It was especially dicey when we had to squeeze through the road barriers that prevented vehicles from entering the park. Spectators: Most knowledgeable fans in the country. Some spots got a bit sparse (especially when we headed over to Springfield), but overall the crowd support was superb. Logistics: At least five hotels are within walking distance of the start and finish. Unlike previous big- city races that I have done, which require 4 a.m. wakeup calls and complicated transportation plans to get to the start or to return from the finish, we were able to walk out of our hotel around 6:15 and comfortably get to the start. After the race, despite the marathon induced soreness, it was an easy walk back to the hotel. The race offered plentiful port-a-pots throughout the entire start and finish areas. The organizers know not to skimp in this area. They also got the race started basically on time. Expo had good vendors, but it has probably outgrown that section of the hotel. Summary: I was making plans to go back here in 2011 within 10 minutes of finishing the race. The race combines big-time organization skills with small-town charm. There are few races that can offer both.

Good Race

I enjoyed this race. Good atmosphere and good course. I did not come away with any "wows!" from the race, but no negatives either. Although the finish at Heyward Field was pretty cool. Pros: Eugene is a good place to run. Course was fair and relatively flat. The hills were not any issue, Second half of the course was so much better than the first half (as you hit trails - albeit mostly concrete - at about mile 16 until just before the finish). Water stops were well staffed, although several in our group had a couple where the water tasted like sewer water and a couple where the Gatorade mix was off. Logistics were easy in the smaller town (we stayed within walking distance of the start). Weather was great race day (but we were in Oregon for a week and this was the only day it did not rain). Cons: The half (twice the size of the full) and the full run together for the first 10 miles or so. This made the course very crowded. At about mile 7 or 8, we transitioned to a trail and it was very tight. Expo was in too small of a space and thus crowded. It barely felt like more than somewhere to get your number and shirt.

good course, nice town

Great Marathon

Overall a great marathon. Positives: 1) Great course. 2) Finishing in Hayward Field (great motivation). 3) Excellent aid stations. 4) Great volunteers and spectators. 5) Excellent finishing medal. Things to Make This Race Even Better: 1) Start line "pace signs." These helped to group everyone based on their expectved finish time, but they were too close to the starting line. This caused everyone to be crammed together. Space these out farther from the start line to give everyone more room. 2) Signage when the marathon and half marathon split. 3) Eliminate cones in the middle of completely closed streets. I just about tripped over a cone (mile 7-8ish) that was in the middle of the street/runners. 4) The split mats for the 13.1 was at 13.0. There were some other mistakes on the split mats. 5) You may need a new venue for the expo. The Hilton was too crowded.

Track town, marathon... need I say more?

I broke my marathon PR here, set 19 years ago as a college senior at the Columbus (OH) Marathon. The only two downsides of the course are the amount of concrete along the river and the twists/turns through the park. The hills are relatively early. The competition is superb. I loved finishing on Hayward Field. The crowd and volunteer support was strong for a race of this size city. The weather was perfect.

Incredible Running Town!

This was my first trip to Eugene. It didn't take long to realize Eugene truly is a running mecca. The event is nicely done. Great hi-tech shirts, ample post-race food, including pancakes, and it was a thrill to finish on the track at Hayward Field. According to the local paper, registration was up 35%, including a huge contingent in the half-marathon, which made for an uncomfortably crowded start. Given the number of participants, it seems the race will need to provide for separate start times for the two events. That was the only true drawback. Overall a highly recommended race.

Great race to run with an amazing finish

Race was great. Course is mostly flat, with the exception of a few early rolling hills. I've run this race the last two years, and both have been great. The organizers do a great job of listening to the runners on how to make improvements. Every minor issue I had with last year's race was addressed for this year. I loved finishing on Hayward Field. It was almost enough to make me forget that I missed a BQ by only 40 seconds. This is a must-do race for any marathoner.

Water & Bananas & Massages

Overall, I loved it. But there's always something. (1) No water available at the start - unpleasant surprise; (2) bananas at mile 9 - something about all of those fresh, wet, banana peels on the course that looked like a sight gag waiting to happen; and (3) POST-RACE MASSAGE was absolutely FABULOUS. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

One of the best mid-sized marathons!

Wow, where to start? Organization was great. Spectators were very enthusiastic. Though they obviously numbered nowhere near what you see at Boston or New York, the turn out was better than I expected, very similar to Portland. Weather was fantastic! I know the weather has little to do with the organization of the race, but reviewers tend to blame the race for bad weather, so why not give kudos for a perfect day? Rather than go on and on about the good points, here's a list of any nitpicky issues I could come up with: 1. Kind of crowded for first few miles. I know the trend has been for more marathons to include halves, but why not start them at a slightly different time or maybe in a different place? Also, the half/full split did cause some confusion. I was near a couple of folks running the half who had to turn back a couple of miles after the split. Though I felt the volunteers were pretty loudly calling the directions, maybe some signs would have helped? 2. Parts of the course were somewhat less than beautiful. Any way to cut out the trip through abandoned Springfield? 3. A few more porta-potties at the start would have been nice. 4. As it turns out you must bring your goody bag to the clothing check; boy, I wish I would have know that before (if I missed this piece of info it must have been printed pretty small). OK, this one is a real nitpick, but I had to park quite a ways away and thus had to run to my car and back, and just barely made the start. OK, so that's all the possible negatives I could come up with. If anything isn't listed above, I would have included it in the "what was great" list, but that list would have been much too long for this review! I very strongly recommend this marathon!

Amazing course!! Not so great aid stations...

I just ran the 2010 Eugene Marathon and it was such a blast. The fans were everywhere and would cheer for everyone as they passed by. The run was overall an easy, mostly flat course. They had restrooms and water all along the course. I was quite disappointed when I stopped at an aid station for a bandage at mile 17 and the women couldn't find one in her first aid bag! Very frustrating. So I stand there for at least three minutes before giving up and running on without one. That was the only bad thing about it though. It was a really great race and I would definitely do it again.

Great Small-Town Race in Track Town, USA!

A very well run marathon in a small college town - definitely earned its name as "Track Town, USA." A great finish on the track at Hayward Field - please keep this attribute of the race. Highly recommended to all! I set a PR on the course too! Pros: + Very efficient race day shuttles from Valley River Center to the start - I arrived at 5:45 a.m. and did not have any lines to get on the bus. It was a short 15-minute ride to the start area. + Porta-potties: there appeared to be enough when I arrived at 6:15 a.m. at the start area, but I think the lines got longer as the start approached. + Great finish at Hayward Field. Cons: - The course was not a flat as expected - not hilly, but the first half had one really long hill and one shorter, steeper hill. Neither was too bad, but the first half was not flat. (The second half was pretty flat, though.) - Online tracking via the race's website was not functioning for me, and neither did the Facebook application - which was a bit disappointing to those who wanted to follow my progress online.

Good Overall Experience

Pros: It was easy to get to the start via the shuttle. Easy bag check at the start. Pretty course through neighborhoods, and along the river. Nice crowds for a town that size. Nice clothes for sale at the expo. Next year suggestions: Add some healthy food options at the finish; maybe add some heaters at the start if it's cold again; add more shuttles back to runners' cars.

Fast, relatively scenic course

This is a great, relatively small marathon in a cool college town. The course is almost totally flat and fast, and much of it is along the banks of the river, which is a nice place to be running. The weather was ideal for a marathon this year, and I gather it was pretty typical of Eugene in May. The expo, pasta dinner and generally organization were all excellent. I picked up probably my favorite race T-shirt ever at the expo (not the official one, but a cool, green, Nike one - running in the footsteps of legends). I agree with others that it got a little painful running on lots of concrete trails, but I'm not sure how the course could be changed to avoid this without giving up the scenic river route. I don't know why Eugene would pave their running paths with concrete in the first place. I'm not sure why everyone was complaining about having to dodge slow half-marathoners when the courses re-intersected briefly - it was for maybe a couple hundred meters. My only real complaint (and this is from someone who missed a BQ by only two minutes) was waiting for the bus at the end of the race to get back to the Hilton. For some reason, there were plenty of buses before the start and only one after the race. I will definitely run this again next year.

Came Back For Seconds

This was my second time running this course and it keeps getting better. I agree with everything else that was said. The only issue I saw was that it was a little crowded in spots and there were some places where the half and the full mixed that looked confusing for some people. Overall though I can't wait to run it again in 2010!

Awesome race!!!

This is a great race!! The course is well marked and mostly flat and fast. The organizers do a fantastic job with communication, transportation, expo, course layout, "after race" celebration, live bands on the course, cheering zones, T-shirt, and medal! The spectator participation is phenomenal, and& I've never seen anything like it at other races. The crowds and bands are great with cheering you on! Pros 1. Great course (safe and clearly marked) 2. Friendly to walkers 4. Shirt (great design) 5. Medal (biggest medal I've received to date!) 6. Support in crossing the intersections 7. Spectators / celebration 8. "After-race" food and drinks 9. Volunteer support at water stations 10. Race results by name are in the newspaper a few days later I've done this race for the last two years and am looking forward to next year already!

Best Marathon out of 20 I have run (except Boston)

I thought this was a very well organized and a extremely fast course with plenty of fans out there to cheer us on. The weather broke just as I arrived, and I have to say that the weather was perfect for a marathon, with cloud-cover and temps in the 50's. This race is destined to become one of the best - if not already the best - on the west coast. My Eugene Marathon hat is off to the organizers for a job well done. I will be back and hopefully we can finish on Historic Hayward Field. I would put this on your list of marathons to run in your lifetime.

A Marathon you MUST do.

This is only my second marathon, but it set my standards very high. The weather was perfect (low 50's and a little rain at the start, but it is Oregon after all), the fans were great and the course was beautiful. There are parts of the course that are concrete. It was harder on my legs and feet than I thought it would be. There are two gradual inclines and one steep downhill in the first few miles, and one hill four blocks-long around mile 9. There is great crowd support there to help you get up it. There are 3 times when the marathoners and halfers split on the course. I didn't get lost, but those parts of the course could be better marked. The Eugene spectators love this event. They know about running and really support you. The crowd at South Eugene High, about mile 7, was fantastic. You'll feel like a rock star. Lots of people parked and played music from their cars. There was one family who blasted the Rocky Theme from their minivan about mile 6. Awesome spectators. The second half of the marathon along the river is much more quiet. I put on my iPod at that point. I flew cross country to run this event, and I'm so glad that I did. I'll be back next year. From what I've heard, the finish will be inside Hayward Field. How can you resist that? Another note on the weekend: If you run this marathon, the Springfield Marriott Courtyard was outstanding. They had their own pasta party for charity (which was really good), they shuttled us to the official shuttle (took only an extra 10 minutes on Sunday morning), and they gave away gift bags with bananas, energy bars and gel. They also handed out garbage bags to wear to stay dry on Sunday morning. They know how to take care of runners.

All-around awesome race

I've run marathons all over the world and nothing can match a marathon in "Track Town, USA!!!" It's a small race, but it's very well organized, with great fan support, and a fast, scenic course. What else can you ask for?

Almost Perfect

There are a lot of marathons run the first weekend of May, and this is probably the fastest. The course was flat except for one small hill at mile 8 and a few minor inlclines here and there. There was rain the night before but it stopped just before the starting gun went off. We had ideal weather for the race - pleasantly cool, with no wind. The race was very well organized, just what you'd expect from a city that bills itself as Track Town, USA and is the birthplace of Nike. Some course changes might be in order if this race gets much bigger. It was a bit crowded in spots.

This is a great race!

For a 3rd edition, it doesn't get any better. The course is flat, fast and scenic through neighborhoods near the University of Oregon and then through parks along the Willamette River. This limits somewhat the areas where spectators can congregate but this is a running town and those who were there were very enthusiatic. Plus the band at mile 8 was worth the price of admission!

Already great and continuously improving!

This year the finish line was moved from Autzen Stadium to the start line location. That itself was a big improvement. Just like in past years, the course was relatively flat and very scenic. There's word that next year's race will finish on the track at Hayward Field. That would be awesome! I've run Portland a couple of times and I think the crowd support in Eugene is much better. The Scream Zone at mile 8 is a bit like Wellesley in Boston, except the crowd is close to you on both sides. The screaming gave me goosebumps! The crowd at the finish was also great, with people lining both sides of the course for the last 0.2 miles. As the race organizers tweak things each year there are bound to be issues. Here are the two that I would focus on fixing. First, the start corrals were too crowded, making it difficult to get in the pack at the appropriate spot. Second, there was some confusion where the marathon briefly re-joined the half-marathon route. Well done, Eugene. I'm proud to call it my hometown race!

Eugene, I'll be back!

It is a tribute to this race that I praise it so highly, even though I had a lousy race due to leg cramps. The course is gorgeous. The elevation chart will show you the three hills - at .5, 4.5 and 8.5, approximately. The last one is the worst, but none are spirit-breakers. The large portion of the race that runs along the river is just stunning. My only complaint about my entire experience (other than my own mutinous legs) was the road surface. The bike path surface was rough and difficult in places, but worst of all was the opening mile, where we were running very tightly together. It's hard to watch your footing in that kind of crowd, so the potholes are treacherous! I nearly lost my race right there. Other than that, an awesome marathon. I will be back!

Great Experience

Beautiful course - especially the back half! This is a small-town marathon done right. It had its hiccups, but overall? Whoever is in charge definitely knows what they are doing. The only downside to this is that, if you are anywhere near the middle or back of the pack, you will get stuck behind walkers who are oblivious. I welcome walkers with my whole heart, but PLEASE corral them separately! Dodging is exhausting. Great experience, great town, and FANTASTIC spectators - WOW, they were nice! I strongly recommend this one.

Awesome small marathon

This was my second Eugene Marathon and I still believe it is one of the best in the nation. The setting is stunning and the people are very kind and helpful. My only "complaint" from 2009 was the incredible number of walkers and very slow runners who crowded to the front of Corral 1, blocking those of us who respectfully "obeyed" the sub-10-minute-per-mile pace limit for that area. I ran with a 10:15 mpm group and we had to thread our way through hundreds of folks in the first 2-3 miles, which was exhausting and irritating. No fault of the marathon - you cannot legislate common sense and courtesy. The volunteers were great, the spectators were positive, the weather was better than predicted and the finish line festival was outstanding. AS much as I love this event, I hope it remains small and does not become more crowded.

Great organization, ok course

Everything about the organization was very well done - from registration to expo to race morning. After the gun, the course had some positives - relatively flat (although there are plenty of rolling hills here), knowledgeable fans and really smooth in the water stations. But some real downers include some funky right angle tuns in the park (watch out or you'll miss a hidden curb!), plenty of concrete, too much shared course with half-marathoners on a small park trail and the last 3 miles, which were really disappointing. Miles 20-23 are nice run along the river in the shade with some fans and then... boom - you are in no-man's land - an open portion of a desolate park with zero fans and perfect silence. Not what I was hoping for to get me home. Basically, there were no fans until the final turn about 100 yards from the finish. I really hope that they re-design the last few miles to make this top notch race. All that said, it's worth a PR and was my first Boston Qualifier - so it can't be all bad!

Great Weekend in Eugene

Despite the rain, we had a ball. There were a lot of other events going on that weekend besides the race. I had a wonderful day participating with my daughter and loved the atmosphere provided. My wife was so impressed that she wants to start walking half-marathons. I read previous comments and it looks like most concerns were addressed. There were lots of porta-potties, a shuttle service, and good refreshments at the end. The only additional things I would like to see are photos at the end, and I thought some of the marathon finishers (I did the half) were a little crowded out by the half-marathon finishers at the end. I saw one gal lost where the two groups came back together - thinking she was with the wrong group - but there were lots of signs and volunteers to help her out.

Excellent Medium-Sized Marathon

Great course! The course takes you all over Eugene, through most of the parks, finishing along the river. We started out with rain, but it gave way to sun later. There was plenty of shade, though. For a medium-sized marathon, the spectators were impressive, basically bunched at "cheer zones." (There was one that approached Wellesley in volume.) Organization was good. The race started on time (2 minutes late, which for a marathon is close enough), porta-potties were plentiful, and parking was a breeze. Expo was tiny, but after 20 marathons, I have seen pretty much all I need to at expos. For me, key factors are the quality of the course and organization. If I'm going to be out there for 3+ hours, I want the course to lift my spirits. This one did that.

Great smaller race

The course is very scenic and flat, and there were definitely enough aid stations. At some points there were great spectators (like in the Mile 8 "scream zone"). The expo was well-organized, but average. One complaint: At one point, the half-marathon and marathon join together, and you basically have to dodge half-marathon walkers, which can be very frustrating. Also, a number of walkers started in front of runners and then were walking up to five across in the middle of the road.

The devil is in the details!

Parking control at the finish line was terrible. I was in the line of traffic for an hour just to park; I almost missed the start. Mile markers were on pieces of legal-sized paper on sticks about 12 inches high. Try seeing those through 3,000 pairs of legs! I missed two and my pace got messed up. Porta-potties at the start were inside a wire "compound" with a single gate to get in and out! That's thousands of people trying to get through one little gate! Sweat-check trucks were in the same compound - only the far side of the huge intertwined lines for the bathrooms. I just hurled my bag at the truck from 50' away and hoped it made it. Dreadful finish line food (quantity and quality).

good experience in my debut

I chose Eugene for my marathon debut because I had never been to the Pacific northwest and couldn't think of a better place than Eugene. Everyone at the expo was very friendly but the pancake breakfast the day before the race wasn't too good. Traffic control was atrocious on race day and I arrived at the starting line just in time. Beautiful course along the Williamette River with only 1 significant hill. Contrary to some other comments, I did find the spectators to be enthusiastic. I needed a massage after the finish and the staff at the medical tent took very good care of me. One suggestion: replace the Gleukos with PowerAde. I didn't drink enough because the Gleukos messed with my stomach. I would run this again if I were from the area.

Great, except the crowded last 1.5 miles

Everything was excellent about the race except the last 1.5 miles. I finished near the front of the marathon and was dodging half-marathon walkers, weaving through 5K-ers walking back across the bridge, and constantly stopping and starting to avoid spectators over the last 1.5 miles (from the Autzen Bridge to the finish). Hopefully they will figure out a way to fix this. It is probably a problem for anyone finishing in under 3:30, and half-marathoners who are running/walking slower than 2:20. As I said, everything was wonderful about the entire weekend except the end of the course. Surprising that a town rich in running history would not have it organized for the faster marathoners.

Small and friendly (but not too friendly)

My first marathon, and knowing I'd be slow, I chose one that was "walker-friendly." The course is great, but the race wasn't slow-friendly at all. PLUSES: Shaded, lovely course with a wood chip trail option part of the way. There was only one hill to speak of, and the folks were friendly. MINUSES: I only saw one entertainment act; both Subway and Ben and Jerry's were gone before I hit the finish (5:01). The Gleukos was gone before I hit the finish, the 5-hour pacer never showed up, the start was a jumble, and the pacers weren't separated at all. Also, the first 3 miles or so were a mess of trying to pass people. And a tip: If you're going to do this one, be warned that the race t-shirts run HUGE.

Great race that will only get better.

Having run Eugene twice, I was amazed at the improvements they made. The course was better, and the start and finish were as good as any marathon I have done, which is 17 different marathons. The greening of the event was a huge success, and the volunteer shirts were a throw-back to the 60's in tie-dye that really stood out. The things I would change would be changing the finish to Historic Hayward Field and letting the runners finish on the fabled track. I would also have a waved start to limit the congestion since the walkers and slower runners seem to congregate at the front of the pack. I give the Eugene Marathon very high marks and would recommend it to anyone who wants a great destination marathon with a small-town feel.

I Heart Eugene!!

Helluva race! This was my first marathon and I WILL BE BACK next year to do it again! LOVED: the beautiful course, great spectators (that HUGE church group at South Eugene HS mile six-ish, the silly dressed fellas at Regis HS mile 20-ish), massive number of porta-potties at the finish, ample pre-race shuttles from Autzen to the start, plenty of aid stations, wonderful pacers (the 4:15 pacer was an angel - she saved me at mile 20 and easily gained me 15 minutes with her words of encouragement), great spectators, my family could see me at Valley River Center (mile 18) and then walk the bridge across the river to mile 22 to see me twice and park just once, the insta-results printout they gave me at the finish (you had to look for the tent, but it was there) they gave me a receipt with my finish time, and the weather really cooperated - it was gorgeous. Could have loved MORE: more on-course entertainment (they advertised a whole lot of acts, but all I can recall is a jazzy trio in a Springfield parking lot and a boom box in a front yard around Eugene), and the big traffic backup at 6-630 a.m. to get into the Autzen parking lot - that had me really worried that I would be late.... Why not open a couple of entries into the massive parking lot to ease congestion? Please, please come join me next year in 2009. This was my first, and just like the first time I had sex, I can't wait to do it again!!!

Some pitfalls, but a fast course for a PR

Overall, I got what I came for: a fast course and a big PR. However, there were certainly both positives and negatives. Communicating with the race director and staff: In the months before the race, I sent two e-mails to the race staff with questions. Both e-mails went unanswered. However, the race director was walking around during the pre-race expo, as well as at the finish line right after the race, and was very receptive to face-to-face questions and suggestions. In fact, in the finishers' area he actually asked me how my race went (it went well). Host hotel: The rooms at the Hilton are really nice and it is particularly convenient to stay at the same place that the expo and pasta dinner are in - especially if you are trying to stay off your feet the day before the race. However, their customer service is lacking. They charge so-called "guests" to park in their garage. They somehow managed to deactivate my room key during my stay, and they are located in the very noisy downtown area (drunk revelers outside, yelling at 2 a.m.). If a decent night's sleep is very important to you and you are a light sleeper (like me), I'd recommend looking elsewhere. For an upscale hotel that is in the same building at the marathon's expo and pasta dinner, however, this was a decent deal (I'm used to seeing $200 dollars and up at other marathons and this was only $124), but I still think I will not be staying here next time I do the race. Expo: Fine. Small, and they route you across the room to get your shirt and then across the room again to get your chip and number (I'm trying to stay off my feet here!), but the volunteers were helpful and there was a reasonable selection of organizations and vendors for a race of this size. Plus, I picked up a good pair of running shorts for $10. Starting line: This was very good. Plenty of roads nearby to warm up on; there were enough porta-potties so that the lines were reasonable (about a 5-minute wait); there was an entertaining announcer yapping about who knows what; and there was plenty of space in the starting corral, making it easy to seed yourself appropriately. The course: Just as the other reviews say, this course is FAST. There is a mild climb in the second mile and a more significant one at mile 7, but they are both pretty short and the rest of the course is pretty flat. Assuming you can walk up a flight of stairs without getting winded, this shouldn't affect you too much (it's not quite Chicago, but not too far off). Most of the race is on a bike path. This is good and bad - good in that the course is scenic and peaceful, being away from cars and urban life. Also, it is mostly shaded, with the tree cover over much of the course. However, it can be bad in that, if you run negative splits and pass people late in the race, you may have some dodging to do. Also, the path is not closed to the public, so there was the occasional dodging of a cyclist, and this one guy who seemed unaware of pretty much everything. A good portion (not sure how much as I wasn't really paying attention) is on concrete. That's not good. It didn't affect me during the race, but after I finished, the bottoms of my feet were REALLY hurting. The pacer situation was disappointing. The website promised certain pace groups, but one or two backed out or were no-shows, and at least one other went out way too fast. I, myself, have paced marathons before and I know it's not easy, but these problems were avoidable. The crowd support was EXCELLENT for a race of this size. Lots of folks came out to cheer and many had well-informed and useful suggestions like "work together" and "stay relaxed." It was like having a large team of coaches along the course. While I really appreciate people who show up and cheer the runners on, Eugene's spectators were lightyears ahead of the typical fans yelling "almost there" at mile 18. Finish line: The finish line was OK. I didn't run it last year, but I heard it was much improved. Some people here have complained about the food, but I found the food to be completely adequate. Then again, I was one of the faster people in the race, so I finished when there was still some left. Also, I always put my own recovery drink (Endurox) in my gear-check bag, so I have post-race nutrition either way. I heard there were supposed to be Subway sandwiches, but I never saw them. Even as a reasonably fast marathoner, I'm going to show up much later than the the majority of the half marathoners. I'm not sure if they got to the sandwiches first or they never existed. Then again, I shouldn't really complain. I was nauseated enough at the finish (I sometimes get that way after hard-run marathons) that I wouldn't have been able to eat a sandwich anyway. Plus, the other food was plentiful. One thing that really bugged me was the lack of a clock in my finishing photos. I ran my fastest marathon ever and I wanted photographic proof. I was too concerned with other things (celebrating my PR and getting something to eat and drink) after I finished to notice, so I don't know if there was a finish clock facing away from the course or not. Either way, the photographers didn't even capture the finish line banner, so, other than the chip mats below my feet and the look of victory on my face; you can't really tell the finishing photos apart from the ones that were taken in the middle of the race. I consider this a fault of both the race organization and the race photographers. Of course, this is a very minor point for most runners. In summary, if you want a flat, fast course, with decent organization, this is a good place to go. There are some pitfalls, but if you can live with them, go to Eugene. Also, the race organization is always looking to improve, so I suspect these issues will continue to be ironed out as the race matures.

Great course, great day, new PR

Only negative was the huge backup for parking; they can accommodate 60,000 for football games, so they should be able to accommodate 5,000 for marathon. We had plenty of food at the finish, the massages were wonderful, the course was beautiful, the fans were great, the volunteers were encouraging, and there was plenty of water. Eugene is the best for a marathon. THANKS TO THE ORGANIZERS AND VOLUNTEERS.

Better, But Still Disappointed

This is a great course, much improved from 2007. The organization was okay, but lacking in some areas. The support for the back-of-the-pack runners/walkers was almost non-existent. Coming across the Autzen Footbridge between mile 25 and 26, there were hordes of people walking in the other direction, carrying armloads of food and drink from the finish line. When I got to the finish, I really needed 2 things: a porta-potty, and something to eat. The porta-potty was out of paper and the food was non-existent. If the course is to be open for 8 hours, it seems reasonable to assume that there would still be something there for those of us coming in that late, especially after seeing so many people who seemed to be spectators (rather than participants) carrying food away from the finish.

Great town, great race!

The Second Annual Eugene Marathon was better than the first. The course was re-routed to avoid a residential area and to finish line-of-site at Autzen Stadium (instead of having to run around it). Well organized, good weather, good crowd and fun. I PR'd by over 12 minutes. The food and entertainment at the end were fun.

A Great Marathon to Run a PR

I agree with David. Running a great race truly influences how one feels about the marathon and I had a great race at Eugene. The course is flat and fast. There were numerous, well supplied aid stations with enthusiastic volunteers. I was a little surprised there weren't more spectators, especially on a perfect day.

Average

Spectator support was below average. I felt alone for half of the race along the bike path. Also, we were running into a headwind. Timing mats/results were not 100% accurate (20 mile split was a minute off). The finish line was well organized and plentiful. Entertainment was very good. Participation shirts were great. The expo was average to slightly above average. I was pleased with the opportunity for spectators/family and friends to show their support at various locations without having to log miles and miles. Videos and photos were very good.

Beautiful course, spectator-friendly, good support

Eugene was my fourth marathon. The route is nearly flat after mile 7, and spends the last 12 miles on a wooded path near a river. Beautiful. The somewhat cloverleaf design allows friends/family to see you multiple times. The spectators (though not everywhere) were very enthusiastic in their support. Great volunteers too! (Very) minor complaints: walkers not starting near back, music not nearly as often as indicated, and I'm not a fan of Gleukos. Overall: wonderful!

Track Town U.S.A. is a runner's paradise

This town knows running, and it shows. The course is flat and fast, the race well-organized. There are enough turns so you aren't bored but not so many that it slows you. Even with the addition of a half-marathon, this race is still small enough that an 8-minute/mile pace means you have plenty of space in which to run without worrying about being slowed by people in front of you or pushed by someone from behind. Most of the last 16 miles are along the Willamette River, on a path. The finish is in the parking lot of the football stadium (not so scenic, though practical in terms of parking). Shuttle buses are available to get runners from the finish to the start or downtown. They need (prominent) signs and/or announcements to let runners know where to board those buses, but when that's the biggest thing to gripe about, you know the race is good. I came all the way from Atlanta, and I'd do it again.

Clearly deserves to be in the top few

Possibly one of the best marathons of the 40+ I have run. This race has it all: gorgeous scenery, cool temperatures, an exceptional running community, flat and fast course, excellent organization, access to fun tourist activities, friendly people, and top-notch race operations. Eugene is a groovy college town and the whole "running mecca" aura was in full swing. A total blast. Do Eugene if you are looking for an awesome, small marathon.

Great Course

I loved the course: Beautiful, flat, fast, good scenery. Pasta dinner, expo, starting line, and finish line were all great. My only complaints were that they listed all the musical acts that would be along the course and I saw none of these. They also advertised a 3:15 pacer who either didn't show up or was hiding really well at the start. Finally, the crowds were disappointing. My last 2 marathons were Richmond and Green Bay - both had A LOT more crowd support than Eugene. I was pretty surprised by that. The college kids don't really come out to cheer you on though.

A scenic course in a great city w/ friendly folks

This was my first marathon in 22 years. I really liked the size of this event - very well organized and not too big. Scenic course, but I didn't care for the concrete path sections of the trail. They were a little hard on my old legs. Eugene is a great destination, and the fans and volunteers were very friendly and supportive. I'd definitely recommend this race to others.

Beautiful course, great weather, nice race

Eugene is a lovely city and is very green in both uses of the word: parks and recycling. Most of the course is on bike trails through parks after the first few miles. I would only classify about half a mile as a boring area along a street. There were a few hills early, with a big one at about 7.5, but after that it was pretty flat (and I live where it is really flat). Great course overall. The only glitch was they were slow in opening the gates to the parking lot at the finish so that we could take the bus to the start. The first bus left at 5:30am but we weren't allowed into the parking area until later. This was strange, since they have a huge lot for the football stadium so parking should not have been an issue. There were tons of portacans at the start, but along the route they were sparse. At about mile 6, I saw 2 portacans with a line about 10-15 people. A guy ahead of me took off a long way across a soccer field to a portacan he saw near a school. They needed to add a few more along the way, especially until the half marathon splits off at 11 miles. The volunteer tshirts were cool (tie-dyed green) but the race shirts were a dull grey with minimal printing. I love the volunteers, but why was their shirt so much nicer than the race shirt? Eugene has a special place in running history, and this race fits that tradition. There is no reason not to run this race.

Nice, small marathon

Beautiful course - almost flat. The problem is that, at least in its second half, the trails are concrete, which puts a lot of load on your legs. Good water stations. I suggest putting them on both sides of the course and clearly indicating what comes first - water or electrolytes. We had to guess. But the finish line and its party are wonderful. Highly recommended. The half and 5K are very well organized as well; my kids did them, and were very pleased.

Scenic and beautiful

Loved the course! It was flat, scenic, and the weather could not have been more perfect. Running the trails through the fir trees was incredibly beautiful - even when the going got tough. The volunteers were wonderful and enthusiastic and very supportive! I enjoyed the event overall but do have a few negatives: There was no finisher t-shirt at the end which I thought was a little odd, but not a deal-breaker. The one we got at the expo was nice, although everyone I talked to would've preferred to have the colorful volunteer t-shirt. The finisher medal was a little cheap-looking - definitely room for improvement. If they're not going to give out finisher t-shirts, then they should spend a little extra money to make the finisher medal more appealing (wider, more colorful ribbon, heavier medal - check out Austin, TX.) When I go to expos and see what other marathons are offering as a finisher medal, my decision about whether or not I will sign up can be greatly influenced. Food at the finish - HUGE disappointment! Granted, this was one of my slowest finish times ever, but all that was available were bagged chips, bananas, brownie crumbs, and tiny, plain bagels. Subway was supposedly there with sandwiches, but they were long gone by the time I came across the finish. Check out Austin, Dallas & Houston's marathons for tips on providing nourishing after-event food. The last negative was the pancake breakfast that I pre-registered for. I got there right at 7:30 and what they had out in the the burner trays were cold. Then they brought some out "just out of the steamer," and those were tough and barely warm. Except for the orange juice and tiny sausages, it was not worth $7. The free breakfast at my hotel was a much better bet. Eugene, Oregon is a beautiful city, but I'm not sure I would travel out-of-town to do this one again.

Fast, flat and scenic!

A great marathon and beautiful course. The route snakes through Eugene proper and out along the river, along roads and a bike path. The starting point at the campus is central to most hotels and provides plenty of space. The volunteers were plentiful and gracious throughout. The pasta party was merely adequate, but conveniently located in the marathon host hotel. Plenty of port-o-potties at the start and food at the finish (though we missed out on the Subway sandwiches after the half-marathoners exhausted the supply). A couple of areas for improvement include the number of after-race shuttle buses (one from my count and we waited for 30 minutes in the uncovered parking lot) and the inflexibility of the host hotel for late checkouts. They may also consider staggering the start for the full and half. Overall a race worth repeating.

Well-organized, beautiful course

This was a very well-organized race on a lovely course. I traveled from Texas and was thrilled with the area. Beautiful scenery and wildflowers everywhere. There were not enough porta-potties on the course; although I did not need to stop, I remember thinking how frustrating that would have been had I really needed to go. Not a big fan of the Gleukos sports drink on the course and at the finish. Well-run expo, great shirts, although as a woman runner, it would be nice to see some women's sizing for shirts once in awhile. I earn my marathon shirts and it would me nice actually to have them fit. It was cool having Dathan Ritzenhein at the expo and starting the race; great speakers and Eugene-themed programming in general. The course is definitely flat and fast, with the exception of a 1/2 mile-ish hill from 7.5-8, but that is not really a big deal. I got a huge PR and a BQ, so no complaints here! I would run this one again; you'd never know it was only in its second year.

Super!

We will be back! Great, little race fair; good programs; nice course. Spectators were awesome! Lots of porta-potties! Only minus was getting the bus back from Autzen Stadium to the hotel - it was not marked and it took too long to come.

A "right-sized" marathon

Highly recommended. This race has it all: gentle course (minor hill at Mile 7.5), some streets, shady trails, great volunteers, and enough people so that you always have company but don't feel crowded after the first mile or so. The city is a beautiful place. Packet pickup at the expo was quick and painless. The shirt was underwhelming - a tech shirt that looked like gray gym cotton, and available only in a boxy men's cut. The start area was well organized, although there was a crush at the bag check at the last moment. Although porta-potties were plentiful at the start, they became few and far between after that - I had expected a bank at every water stop. Apart from these quibbles, the race is outstanding. The organizers may have to cap entries to retain one of its great assets: its intimate, comfortable size.

Great spectator support

Very enjoyable route, although not quite the "flat" course advertised. Great aid stations, with enthusiastic volunteers. Beautiful winding course along the Willamette. The finish was far superior to last year's LONG ending around Autzen Stadium. Two improvements would be having pacers representing the Boston qualifying times (they had them in 6:00, 6:30, 7:00, etc. per-mile groups). Additionally, the turnaround at 20.5 miles could be improved (wood chip trail of ENORMOUS chips). Those two things aside, Eugene was a PR course for me and a wonderful marathon.

Growing pains evident in second year

I was truly disappointed with the 2008 race as compared to last year's inaugural event. Perhaps it was expectation that the race would be stepped up given the upcoming Trials? The disappointment started at the Expo when I picked up my race packet: very disappointing shirt (can you say butt-ugly?). Other merchandise was available for a very steep price, and the selection was extremely limited. Marketing ploy? Race day parking at the finish area was a fiasco, which caused me to miss the race start (thank God for chips). The course had too many switchbacks and pinch points, mostly because the 1/2 and fulls stayed together for too many miles and started at the same time (I suggest a stagger between the two events). The food at the finish was awful- not that I come for the food, but I could use a decent refuel after 26.2. Also, the early bird price was pretty steep ($80) and they really gouged the late comers. I may be there next year because I live and run here, but I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to attend.

A Great Day to Run

Perfect weather, a beautiful course, and super fans/volunteers made this a great day, and produced my PB! Loved the bike path running! The race director and his crew put on a superb marathon. I can't think of anything that they could do to improve. I hope that doesn't change as this race gets bigger, which it will. I also got terrific support from the La Quinta Inn-Waterfront Hotel in Eugene. They are located a short walk from the finish line (and the bus to the start), and near enough to the expo to walk (20 minutes). I recommend that you check them out.

Perfect Course, but open your doors Ducks.

Your own race performance will always influence how you felt about an event. However, this was a perfect course for this size event. As it grows in reputation it will certainly fill out early, and start attracting bigger sponsors. But since the event was on the hollowed ground that is Eugene, I'm surprised how little the University of Oregon bought into the event. It was billed as starting from Hayward Field. But Hayward Field wouldn't even open it's gates, even to let people warm up. We started on the street outside. Autzen Stadium wouldn't open it's gates to let us finish there (unlike the New Orleans Superdome, or Toronto do). Instead, it was the car park. Pretty poor show from the Uni.

Running In the Footsteps of Legends

I ran two marathons this year: Eugene and San Diego. I pick Eugene over San Diego any day. Eugene had the perfect weather, a flat course, and was very scenic. A majority of the course you ae running on the Wullamette River and there is nothing more beautiful. You get to see many fun sights such as U of O campus, Autzen Stadium, Hayward Field etc. Fans in Eugene are great, because running is such part of the culture of Eugene. They love runners and are excited to see them run! This was the first year for Eugene's Marathon, so there were minor hiccups. However, these are to be expected in the first year. I think that this marathon is going to get more and more popular over time. My suggestion is: run it now!

BEST Marathon I have done

I have done 25 marathons all over the country, including a few of the biggies. This was my favorite! I had never been to Eugene and fell in love with it. The course truly was fast and the fans were great. I couldn't believe it was a first year event. Keep it up.

I really enjoyed my first (and Eugene's first)

My first marathon. I was nervous before the race and got a personal reply from the race director when I emailed. Just wanted to add to the other comments, great course, nicely divided into smaller sections. Fantastic organization. Thank you to Eugene for coming out to cheer everybody (even slow people like me) on. Well timed water stops. Never thought it would go so smoothly for me.

Great First Time

Overall, I enjoyed this marathon and will consider it again next year. I was disappointed in the finish - not so much because of the traffic, but because the volunteers didn't seem all that interested by the time I came in. I heard my name announced, got my space blanket and medal and was handed a bottle of (warm) water but really didn't have any other contact with any volunteers. The bottle of water had been sitting in the sun and was almost warm enough to make tea. Was there food there? Couldn't prove it by me. Nobody was making any attempt to find out if I needed anything or directing me to any thing that might be available. I'm slow and mostly walk, but I pay the same amount of money and expect the same consideration as the runners.

Great start to a destination marathon

Best inaugural marathon that I have run, including San Diego and Seafair. I loved everything about it, including the expo, course, water stations, bands, and fans - and for the first year the organization was fabulous. It was great seeing Joe Henderson, John Keston, Kenny Moore, Nicole Teter, Marla Runyon, Annette Peters, Bill Dillenger, and even Jared from Subway. I will run it next year and recommend it to anyone looking for a quality marathon.

Legends Marathon: Near Flawless Event

Thanks to the organization for an excellent job! The event held up to it's name, publicized reputation and more. I really appreciated meeting Mr. Kenny Moore (co-wrote the screen play for the Prefontaine Movie 'Without Limits,' and authored recent book 'Bowerman and the Men of Oregon';) at the expo. In fact I got a picture of Kenny holding one of Pre's racing flats. Meeting the race directors wife at the expo was a bonus-being able to thank the team in person for impeccable organization. Icing on the cake was Mr. Joe Henderson, professor of running courses at the U of O, author of numerous books on running, and former Runner's World Magazine editor, cheering us on at mile 5!!! The course: generally flat, on bike paths, and VERY GREEN! (Something I have missed since I moved to (southern) California. (Yes, I am among the many returners to a childhood home, happy that Eugene revived a marathon, and happier yet that it lived up to a well deserved 'track capitol USA' homecoming.) I only noted a very few things that could be improved on. Martin Luther King Way is a severe bottle neck of traffic with just two lanes-one in each direction. Getting to a park area or a drop off point is problematic. I also agree with the other commentstoo bad permission couldnt be granted to finish with a lap at Autzen stadium? The wind on the backside was very brisk due to lack of tree protection, but I am not sure what could be done because the course is so otherwise perfect. I know it would probably frustrate the elites going for timetoo bad we couldnt have ran a little on the bark trail built to Pre's specs and in his honor (at Amazon Park); instead of just running past it? Positive aspects I hope the management doesn't consider taking away: a course configured so that no more than 100 meters was crossed twice-amazing! The start less than two miles from the finish. Someone did some serious well organized route planning. A great variety of Grandma's cookies and so forth at the finish (somehow I missed the sub.) Great technical t shirt and nice medal. Hopefully the power outage at the Quality Inn (Gateway) that some of us experienced won't discourage runners in the future!

Great job, Eugene! Highly recommend this marathon.

This was my 7th marathon (ranging from the huge Chicago Lasalle to much smaller Saskatoon, SK, Canada) and this one definitely ranks as the best in my experience right up there with Napa Valley. Eugene, OR provided a great marathon experience from start to finish (well, except for the run around Autzen Stadium near the finish, which should be changed for next year...) with a scenic/ green course, excellent logistics and local support in a very friendly smaller city. Weather was ideal and would recommend this race to anyone seeking a West Coast spring marathon. Found it especially motivating to start from U of O Hayward Field (echoes of Pre!) and having the opportunity to complete pre-race warm-up at this legendary venue. Found my marathon experience in Eugene to be first-rate throughout the weekend. Thank you, Oregon!

Congratulations on a Winner!

This was my second inaugural this year and third marathon this year. The other inaugural as far as organization goes could take lessons from the top-notch job the Eugene Race Director and staff did. I was extremely impressed on how well organized the race was. The weather was perfect; the course was scenic with the right amount of different terrain. The hotel I was staying at was right past mile 16 and I was able to see my sweetheart. I was a little disappointed that I didn't see time clocks, until mile 20. I knew at that point I just had to be patient and I would have my long awaited Boston qualifying time. After some nice volunteer heard my plea for vaseline at mile 22, she ran up to me with a tongue depressor full of vaseline. I knocked 8 minutes off of my PB from 1999. I did qualify for Boston, and have recommended to my running buddies that this is a race they need to put on their calendar. Thank you so much! My carbo loading included many of the local microbrews on Saturday. Eugene definitely wins in that category, too!

Thank you Eugene!

I LOVED this marathon! There is always a risk when running an inaugural event, but what this one lacked in any organizational area, it made up for in heart. Course support was amazing! From plenty of volunteers, to an entire city that turned out to cheer me on! Thank you for putting my name on my race number. It makes such a huge difference to hear 'Go T" - when your spirit is waning! People were out everywhere. The course was completely beautiful, until the end. I do agree they need to do something other than have us breathing in exhaust the last mile. That was one rough mile and I needed my O2 people! Other than that, wow. Almost 12 miles along the Willamette River! Saw all sorts of gorgeous wildlife, and there was even the option a few points to run on soft trail. Loved having the opportunity to run with the halfers for the first 9.5 miles. My husband did the half, and we were surprised (pleasantly) to be able to do that together! Water stations were very well stocked, but eww on the Gleukos. That is the nastiest tasting stuff. Yeah, I know taste is subjective, but I have an iron stomach and one cup of that stuff makes my tummy turn. Heck, I take a water stop at Starbucks on most of my long runs, and down a grande cup of strong 'hair on your chest coffee' before finishing up with nary an issue. But one sip of that stuff and ugh! My two minor criticisms would be: 1. Help people seed themselves correctly. The start had us having to dodge many shoulder to shoulder walker-lines. I appreciate and support walking a marathon, but they need to be either WELL ahead, or behind the runners. Since we started into a 2 lane neighborhood, the walkers were a real impediment 2. SHAME on the Thorlo people at mile 24! When I passed they were having a water fight WITH THE WATER MEANT FOR THE RUNNERS! By that point it was downright hot outside. No one was handing out water, but there was lots of sophomoric screaming and running around as precious bottled water was being wasted. REALLY left a bad taste in my mouth for that sponsor! That was in SUCH bad taste. Grow up! Finish line food was 'meh' but it was well organized, keeping family members from chowing down on the runner's food (major pet peeve of mine). The race shirts and medal were AWESOME! Loved the logo and color scheme, although it did require me having to buy a new running skirt at the expo. Darn. I really hate it when I have to buy new running gear (she says deadpan as if she's being serious). It was also way cool to meet Jared (from Subway) and get my picture taken with him, as I too have lost over 100 pounds and lead an entirely new life. I would totally do this marathon again! Oh, and both my husband and I PRed by 5 minutes!

OUTSTANDING INAUGURAL MARATHON

I have the highest praise for the inaugural Eugene Marathon. I only have one downer and that was the last 1.2 miles. Having to run all the way around the stadium and beside all those cars and their exhaust fumes was not the greatest ending to an otherwise super course. My only question to the race management: Is there not a way to finish in the stadium?? Now that would be awesome!

Outstanding... but...

Eugene came out in droves to support the return of the marathon to the city. The course was very well mapped out for the first 24 miles. Then it struggled. Having the marathoners circle the stadium parking lot was a disaster. I ran the first half of the marathon quicker than I got out of the parking lot. We were trapped with only one way out of the parking lot. Nonetheless, I am positive that they will be able to rectify that situation and I hope they can figure out a way to finish inside the stadium. Finish line excluded, it was a FANtastic marathon. Thanks Eugene!!!

Fabulous race

The inaugural Eugene Marathon was fun and well-executed. Kudos to the race management team! Eugene offered the ease of a small marathon with a beautiful riverside course, running history (Hayward Field) and pleasant, supportive crowds in spots. The course is flat, though not pancake-flat. Yes, I am a bit biased because this is my hometown marathon. However, I've run other small, medium and large races (including Boston), and this race compares favorably. Sorry Portland... this is a much more beautiful course! The race expo was small but inviting. Friends say the shuttle bus from the finish line ran smoothly. The race shirt is a long-sleeve technical shirt from a local company, SportHill. Suggestions for next year: find a way to re-route the last 1.5 miles off MLK Blvd to open parking in Autzen Stadium lots and keep runners away from idling traffic. Also make sure all the mile markers get placed on the course. If you're looking for a spring marathon alternative, come run the Eugene Marathon!

It was my first and it was perfect!

This was my first marathon and I finished under 4 hours. The Eugene Marathon was perfect place to start. They said, "fast, flat and scenic" and it was. It was the perfect weather and the course ran along some of the most beautiful parts of Eugene. Around mile 18 you were along the river with fishermen fishing on it. The race seemed very organized from picking up your packet, to the start, to having enough water stations, to the finish line. When we came around Autzen Stadium, I wish we could have seen the finish line. It would help the last mile not seem so long. Maybe they will change that for next year. I plan on doing more marathons in my future. It was really challenging and rewarding time. I think the Eugene Marathon help me have such a great experience. I plan on running it again next year!

A Good Inaugural Marathon !!!!!!!!!

Eugene was a very good spring Marathon and was very well organized for a inaugural marathon. The course was a mix of city streets and river bike paths with about 10 miles of it being on the bike paths. Most of course was flat with only 1 hill at mile 5. I thought there was a bit too much bike path but it was scenic along the river. The bike path was a bit rough and very curvy. This lead to slower times than expected. There were a lot of PRs set judging by post event comments. The only glitch I saw was about 3 of the mile markers signs didn't get put up. This made for a lot of confusion with people that were going for specific times. Everything else was done very well. Absolutely FANTASTIC spectators almost all the way along the course that were cheering you on by name because your name was on everybody's bib number. That is a great idea and more marathons could learn from Eugene's group. The Expo was not much but hopefully it will get better next year. It was fun and yes I did PR. Thanks to the Eugene Marathon and everybody that was involved :) Andy :)

I was really impressed about the race starting on time and the bonus of John Keston singing the national anthem. It was great to warm up on Hayward Field and then run such a beautiful course. Finishing in the stadium would have been a bonus. It is a marathon that I would run again.

Lovely course, but not very well organized

I ran the 2007 Eugene Marathon and qualified for Boston with a personal best of over 15 minutes faster than my previous PR! The course is mostly flat, with a large hill at mile 5, and some undulations, but it's fairly flat otherwise. There weren't loads of spectators (NYC is my main marathon!) but they were SO supportive and I LOVE how our name was on our bib numbers. The crowds passed out food, water, and were really great. And whoever had on Van Halen, haha, really fun! The organizers needed a bit more practice. I asked several basic questions to numerous individuals at the expo, and got 'I don't know' the expo volunteers/ workers didn't also know to WHOM I could ask the questions. These were basic questions like, 'Are there mile markers?' 'Are there clocks at every mile?' 'Are there official race photographers like Brightroom whom we could buy photos from?' 'How often are the shuttles running?' Etc. I think they need a bit more organization but the race went well!

Great Race

I'm happy to say this has been my most memorable marathon and i set a PB. Eugene is a beautiful town and running the paths where so many great runners ran before was an amazing experience. To me just steping into Hayward field and running a lap around sent chills down my spine I felt like i was Prefontaine, great boost that carry me through the race. I got nothing but great thing to say about this race. The route was beautiful i loved running thru the University of Oregon and along the river and beautiful residential areas with great crowds and volunters. I was hoping for a bigger expo but it was great seeing Kenny Moore and Jared from Subway =) I really liked the t-shirt and medal, great job!! I'm sure Eugenes Marathon will become a big event. GREAT JOB OVERALL and cant wait till next year!!

Way to go, Eugene!!!

Very well organized race. Impressive for an inaugural race. Tons of volunteers, and lots of great, cheering spectators. Aid stations spaced perfectly and well organized. Great course; I loved running on the nicely paved river path, although I do agree with another comment posted that the last mile next to stinky, slow traffic wasn't the best way to end. Please consider adding some energy bars or gels to a couple of aid stations. I was starving by mile 15. Luckily, our hotel was at mile 16.5, so I grabbed an energy bar there. By the way, runners, the Valley River Inn turned out to be a great place for families to watch their runners go by, and still gave them plenty of time to get to the finish. I will do this one again! Cool medal and technical T.

Excellent all the way around

Excellent marathon, esp. for an "inaugural." Route was magnificent, mainly along the banks of the Willamette River. The three footbridge crossings were gorgeous. I've seen much bigger spectator crowds in my 20 marathons, but none to compare to the combined enthusiasm and sheer friendliness here. Salute to the many musicians along the course, esp. the chap with the harp (!). My only "down" comment: this "glucose" drink at the aid stations is rather an acquired taste; it'll do, but I'll pack more of my own stuff next time. Looking forward to the 2008 race!

Fantastic Organization; Good Course

Richard and Andy and the rest of the crew did a fantastic job putting on a marathon in Eugene. It's about time that city got a marathon. I was raised in Eugene and when I heard it was having a marathon, I skipped Boston to run it. The course itself if pretty fast. The 'hills' at the beginning are not bad at all and in reality, are more inclines than they are hills. I think it's a fast course but not blazing fast. At least half of the race is on a fairly narrow bike/walking path that has very gentle rolling bumps but I found it to be a bit disruptive to rhythm. Rhythm can be everything. That said, I really liked the course. It was stunningly beautiful, it is very protected from the sun and from wind and it is still pretty flat and fast. I can't think of anything that was wrong with the race. It started 5-7 minutes late but that doesn't really matter. There were two or three missing mile markers but not a huge deal. I swear there was actually more hydration stations than advertised which is always a bonus. And despite it being 7am on a Sunday morning, the crowds were at least adequate. I would highly recommend this race to anyone on the borderline of qualifying for Boston or anyone else that is looking for a flat, beautiful spring marathon.

Track Town, USA has finally got a marathon back

I was very pleased with the course, which is mostly flat and scenic. Aid stations and port-a-potties were well placed throughout the course. The organization was terrific for any marathon, let alone a first-year marathon. My only complaint was the final 1.2-mile stretch. The University of Oregon declined the marathon access to Autzen Stadium, so we had to finish in the parking lot, which forced us to run alongside traffic. That wasn't terrible because on a 4-lane road, we had 1 lane coned off for us. The other problem this presented was a traffic nightmare leaving. I PR'ed on this course and would highly recommend it to runners of all abilities.

This is a great small-town race!

This was a very well organized and run marathon covering a mostly flat and very scenic course. It seemed like the whole town came out to either run or watch, though on some parts of the course there were not a lot of spectators. The field thinned out very quickly as the miles unfolded and there was none of the mosh-pit elbowing of big-city marathons. This would be a great first marathon or one for those of us a little jaded by the monster events in the big cities. The local bars also seem to carry about a million varieties of beer, if that helps you decide.

SIMPLY... PERFECTION!

You are all spectacular!! This was the best race I have ever done. I only ran the 1/2, but trust me, I will be back next year for the whole. The entire town of Eugene should be commended. You all rolled out the red carpet for us out-of-towners. Perfect course - flat and fast. The water stops were perfectly spaced and very well manned. I know you had no control of the weather, but you couldn't have asked for better. Thank you to the woman who supplied the snacks around mile 10-11. So many times my eyes filled up with tears over the sheer wonderment of where I was running. I've run many halfs, but this by far was the diamond of them all. You would never know this was an inaugural. I literally cannot wait until I can sign up for the 2008 race. I'll do the whole marathon next year and get to experience the entire wonderful course and the people. Thank you so very much. It was totally worth traveling from Florida to run this race. God bless you all. I will talk about this for a good long time. I'm still smiling even now, sitting at my desk, just thinking of Eugene.

Best Oregon Spring Marathon

Congratulations on a successful inaugural marathon. The starting area was well organized, with more than adequate parking and shuttle buses. The beautiful course was well-shaded from the blue sunny skies. Plenty of volunteers provided support along the well-marked course. The City of Eugene represented itself well, providing plenty of cheers. Dri-Fit finisher's shirts were actually true to size. Results were available quickly. To the race volunteers and organizers, thank you for the best spring marathon in Oregon!

Eugene is back!

Wow! The organizers of this marathon did a great job, especially for a first-time effort! Its a fast, scenic course with a good number of spectators for a small town. The only thing that would make this race better is if it finished in the stadium. I'll be back for sure!

Awesome!

This is a beautiful marathon! Excellent organization, enthusiastic spectators, and a really beautiful course make this a to-do marathon. It's a perfect sized race - never crowded and never lonely. There was no problem with the half marathoners splitting and then merging later on. I highly recommend this race.

Don't miss out on Eugene

Oh my gosh! This is how to put on a marathon/half-marathon event. You would never guess this was their first one. The expo and packet pickup were great. The pasta dinner was cheap and good ($10.00). The finisher's shirt is tech fabric and a super design. The course is FLAT and fast. The first 5.5 miles are on streets, so the runners spread out before you get to the bike paths. Then, most of the rest of the course is on very scenic bike paths with pockets of cheering spectators. Do your training and come to Eugene to run a new PR. I chopped 14 minutes off mine! One small, itty bitty complaint.... The gear check bag was way too small and ripped out when I put my jacket in it. But that's kitty litter stuff when you are putting on an event this big for the first time. It cannot get much bigger because of the bike paths but it will get better and better. Don't miss out!

Here to stay...

A great debut for the Eugene Marathon! Considering that this was an inaugural marathon, organization was awesome. There was good crowd support, which will only get better over the years. The course is fast and scenic.

I would recommed this marathon to anyone

My general rule of thumb is to never run a marathon the first year it is put on. I broke this rule for Eugene because I like the area so much, and figured if anyone could put together a well organized marathon, it would be someone from Eugene. I was not disappointed. The course is beautiful, with only two 'tough' hills in the first five miles. The first half of the course is mostly through neighborhoods, with the half marathon and marathon runners together for a total of about eleven miles. The second half is along the Willamette River, which was an absolute pleasure to run along. There was a surprising amount of spectator support. The water stops were plentiful, with cheerful, well trained volunteers. The only reason I did not give the organization a perfect score is that some of the mile markers were difficult to see. I missed about four. My husband and two friends ran this race as well, and we all missed mile markers. That is such a small point, and did not detract from the overall good experience of this marathon. It is a fast course that I think anyone would do well on. I just hope that the race director does not allow it to become too large. The number of people who ran this year seemed like the right size for the path that makes up about half the race.

A Good Spring Marathon In Oregon Great Spectators!

Thanks to the Eugene Marathon and everybody that was involved :)

Saved one of the best for one of my last!

I only have 8 states left to run (between now and Sept.) and this was truly a great one to do! HATS OFF to all of you folks from Eugene - you all should feel very, very proud. May our Lord bless all of you in a special way for treating us to a wonderful marathon in a super city!

Potentially, a great marathon

The buzz was there. The start at historic Hayward field was inspiring. Even the slogan, 'in the footsteps of legends' had us channeling our inner Prefontaine. The Scenery: Pretty spectacular. Over half the course follows a nicely paved bike path along the Willamette river. Crossing the footbridge just after Mile 6 was jaw-droppingly beautiful. The Course: Very well-marked and mostly flat (after early hills). The out and back got old, even with the incredible scenery. Having the Half Marathoners split at Mile 10 and then rejoin 1.5 miles later, only to veer off to their finish was a tad disheartening. As were the directional arrows pointing right to Mile 7 or straight for Mile 25. Sadly, the biggest discouragement was the lackluster finish in the barren gravel parking lot at the far end of the football stadium. It would have been magic had they allowed us to finish in the stadium, OR, at least, let us park in the empty lot at the finish. Support: Plenty of water. The Glucose was a flavor disaster. GU, bananas, orange wedges, ANYTHING would have been greatly appreciated (and a nice touch) for the second half. MANY great volunteers! The small stuff: Printed name on bib was a great addition! Unfortunate that $85 buys a non-recyclable plastic Nike shopping bag for my 'goodies'. Medal was fine but nothing exceptional. It was well-organized for an inaugural event. They had the opportunity to make it a premier west coast marathon without a lot of tweaking. Unfortunately, they settled for good, not great. The legends and myself had hoped for more. However, it's worth doing.

A great small-city marathon

Great, well organized marathon with flat and fast course. Therefore, a new PR is pretty much guaranteed. I got a new PR and everyone I talked to got one as well. Not only the flat course, but the weather was also perfect. But for me, running with a breathtaking view of the Wellamette River for miles and miles was the most inspiring. I recommend it for everyone who wants a new PR.

overall nice marathon with good support

I would have liked to finish as you come into the stadium. Psychologically it was a bummer to get to Autzen and still have another 1.2 to go, and coming in on Centennial next to all that traffic wasn't the best way to finish a marathon.

this one's a keeper

Cons first, just to get these out of the way: - Three mile markers weren't all that visibly marked, or maybe not marked at all, including two in a row (miles 9 and 10, I believe, or maybe 10 and 11). I suspect they were obscured by coincident water stations, but missing a marker, particularly two in a row, is always a bad surprise. - There was no Gu, or any solid food other than GummiBears, out on the course, not even once at a mile 18-20 aid station, as many races will do. To be fair, the website didn't say that there would be, so I wasn't unpleasantly surprised out on the course. But, personally, I would pay $1 more in my entry fee in exchange for someone handing me a Gu at mile 18. - Food at the finish was a little lacking cookies, bananas, and plain bagels (with nothing to put on them), and that was about it. A little more fruit would have been nice, maybe some yogurt drinks, too. Pros: Really, just about everything else. The course was great: Flat, fast, and scenic, with only 1-2 miles in one lane of a busy multilane street, and all the rest on back streets or, of course, those great riverside bike trails. Course support was excellent; we went through a lot of neighborhoods, and there were people out in force throughout. Ample water stations 15 in all? with well-trained volunteers at all of them. There was ample parking at Autzen Stadium, and it was easy to leave from there efficiently in short, a well-put-together race, on a very attractive course, that was very well run. And did I mention how nice it was to run alongside the Willamette for over half the course? Bottom line, I guess I can't help but compare this to the Portland Marathon, as that's my hometown run, and one I've done five times. The capsule review of Portland, as just a few minutes browsing comments on that race would suggest, is that it's very well-organized and yet not particularly attractive. (Fairly true and very true, respectively, I would say.) In comparison, Eugene was just as well-organized, and about ten times nicer out on the course itself. Hope this one sticks around.

Beautiful Course

Having been raised in Eugene, it was a thrill to see the hometown finally get its own marathon. The course itself is the strongest asset, at least for the marathon. Miles 15 through the end are almost all paved trails along the river and it is a joy to be in such scenery. The 1/2 marathon didn't have anything like the views and trails that the full had and they really should change that to put their best foot forward next year. Volunteers and overall organization were adequate, but not insanely wonderful as I have seen in some other marathons (Portland). Overall, for an inaugural, I think it's off to a good start; some minor fine tuning and this will start to pick up some big numbers.

Good Start!

Overall, the race organizers did a lot of things well for an inaugural event. For example, packet pickup was easy and smooth. The website was well done and continuously updated. The race t-shirt and finishers medals were excellent. The name on the race number was a nice touch. In addition, course marshalling and directional markings were excellent. If anyone got lost, they shouldn't be running a marathon. And while I would have liked to have started on Hayward Field, logistically I think it would have been very difficult, but not impossible. Regardless it was great to start at the 'House that Pre Built.' The fluids were plentiful and were at frequent spots. Ninety-five percent of the volunteers at the aid stations knew how to hand the fluids as I ran by (i.e., they were experienced or well trained!). Thank you volunteers! Things to focus on next year ensure mile markers appear at every mile, they were missing from 6, 9, 10 & 13; Provide some gels at 17, 20 & 23; Move the finish inside the stadium (Instead of going left off the bridge, go right and around to MLK Blvd, and straight into the Stadium); lastly post direction signs indicating where the shuttle pickup is from Autzen to Hayward (e.g, at the intersection of MLK Blvd and LH Pkwy). One other thing that would be nice, but again difficult logistically is to not have the Half-Marathon merge back with the Marathon at 11.5. Or alternatively, what might be possible is to create two running lanes one for the marathon & one for the 1/2 marathon at the point that the two merge to the point where they diverge again. Half-marathoners would stay on the right side and marathoners would be on the left. Again a lot of things done very well. My hats off to the organizers!

Best race I have ever done!!

Wasn't sure what to expect at an inaugral race in such a small town but it was the best race I have ever done. Besides setting a PR for myself, the course was amazing!! Running along the river was beautiful and the rest of the scenery was so nice. The expo was small but nice, the hotels were convenient and close to the start and finish, the shuttle buses ran smoothly and got us to where we needed to go in plenty of time, parking was abundant, volunteers were superb and the small crowds were so supportive as they cheered you on. I am used to running VERY large marathons but this one was small but perfect!! A+ to those who designed and set this race up!! This will definitely be a race I will do every year!!

Great race - would highly recommend

This was a fabulous race. Great course - flat, fast and scenic. Really well organized, with great aid stations. No first-year problems for a first-year race.

Great race organized by runners - Track Town USA

This was the first year revival of this race and while I did not search out deficiencies, none were really blatantly put in my face. Expo: Neil (I believe his name was) organized a small, albeit quality, expo that was very enjoyable. Number pickup was smooth and easy. Hopefully this will grow in future years. Starting line: Limited parking, but the bus system was lined up to bring people down to Hayward Field. I stayed in a hotel 1 mile away, so I walked down. Plenty of "facilities" but it did seem to stack up soon after I used them. Baggage check - a little disorganized; this was the one only thing that I found to be a negative. I think having bibs with baggage tags to put on the bags, and slightly larger bags, enough for a pair of shoes and sweats, would be a huge plus. Course. A little crowded at the start, but I didn't see many problems. Roads were a little rough in the beginning, but once we got to the trails it was wonderful. Beautiful weather also smiled down on us for today. Water stops were sufficient. Maybe add 2 Gu/gel stops for future years. I personally would have liked a few miles on the wood chips through the trails. Crowd support: In the 9 marathons I've done, only surpassed by Boston. About equal to Richmond for you East Coasters. Very few spots without anyone around. Just an awesome community in the Eugene/Springfield areas. Thank you. Finishing: Medals were about average, but I'm holding this one a little more prestige. Finishing inside the stadium would have been great, but it was easy to find family/friends at the end. Plenty of fluids, etc. I'm sure there will be some minor tweaking here and there, but I felt this was a grade A act, and all the more so with it being the first year. Great job Eugene.
