Great Race and Course

I've vacationed in the Outer Banks for 20 years so I was happy to run this one on what I thought would be familiar terrain. However, I was pleasantly surprised as the course took through some areas that I had no idea exited down there. The Wright Brothers memorial and Nags Head highway section I expected. But there were some nice neighborhoods, some cool views along the sound and a few miles through the woods that I'd never seen before. The woods section is definitely not trail running, it's about three miles of a hard-packed rolling dirt road through a park which I thought was great, it felt like a rain forest. Then there is about ¼ mile of actual trail running that takes you from the dirt road up a mild hill, down a mild hill and out to a neighborhood with the halfway point then onto the highway portion. That wooded section is pretty straight forward and I was with a pace group at that point, but there are areas where I could see people running alone might question the right direction to go. It definitely could have used a few more markers or arrows&runners should never, ever be wondering that they may have strayed off the course. Overall, this is what you'd want with a smaller marathon. Small efficient expo, the half marathoners start way ahead so are never seen or in the way, easy and enthusiastic start area, adequate number of port-a-johns, point to point flat course, excellent aid stations and staff, decent overall crowd support but a few lonely miles in the 2nd half, particularly miles 22-25, and then a very nice finish area. This could definitely be a PR and/or BQ course. My only reservation would be to watch the weather. The Outer Banks can get some strong winds out of the southwest that could make it a tough day, but this year the winds were a non-issue. The temp did get to about 60 degrees and though it never felt overbearing that's not ideal for a PR. The temp took its toll on me by the last five miles but then again that may have also had more to do with me going harder early than I should have. The silver lining is that when I got to the top of the bridge at 23 my chance at a BQ was gone so I stopped and took in a little 360 view of the both sound and ocean, which was beautiful. This is no big city marathon but if you want a low key, 400-500 runner, enthusiastic race of marathoners only, this is a good one. Definitely recommended.

How Roanoke Colony was Lost

This is a beautiful marathon marred by missing directions and mile markers, unstaffed positions, and terrain. The run between Kitty Hawk and Manteo took my breath away. Running through a maritime forest, past the Wright Brothers National Monument, and over the blue blue waters of Roanoke Sound highlight my 11-year marathon career. Will I run OBX again? No. Will I recommend it to a friend? NEVER. OBX Marathon gives a very generous 16 mins/mile pace. To balance this, six cutoffs (not five) cull the herd at miles 3.5, 8, 13.1, 18, 20, and 'the Bridge'. Full marathoners failing to meet the 16 min/mi cutoffs are bused off the course. In case you were calculating that these 111 simply went on to become OBX Half Marathoners, no. The half marathon course had already begun 13 miles closer to the finish. 1 in 5 fully-trained on this course DNF'd in the 2019 Outer Banks Marathon. By 13.1 split, 111/566 marathoners Did Not Finish. How do you design a marathon course in which 111 paying marathoners don't even make it to the 13.1 split???? I got lost THREE SEPARATE TIMES on this course. At mile 4, I ran up someone's long driveway, and had to retrace my steps: no direction markers At mile 8, Wright Brothers National Monument, I relied on a passing car: staffer had moved away 'when race got quiet.' At mile 19, I awaited for a resident in a deserted neighborhood: no direction markers At Nags Head Nature Preserve, mile markers 10 - 12 absent. On Washington Baum Bridge, markers 22 - 23 not there. Please note that 'running on a trail' is NOT the same as 'trail running.' You'll require a different technique, including a slower pace, better core strength, and longer reaction time. Please note that your GPS may not work here, as there's both heavy tree cover or twisting trails. Miles 10 - 13 were Trail Running. If the trail had once been agreeable to runners, recent rains had removed the surface buffers. Deep ruts, exposed roots, and thousands of 1' cubed grey rocks strewn across the path. In addition, steep inclines of sandy or gravelly soil exist across the trail. And you have a mile marker 13.1 cutoff time. I get it. Back of the pack runners will sign up for deserted roads, low course support, and leaden legs. I sign up every time. I train alone, prefer inclement weather, and run until my legs give way. I get it. There's only so much highway you can partially close, only so many neighborhoods to use for doglegs, and only so many hours you can shut off infrastructure. At the end, the small and lackluster finisher's medal resembled a manhole cover. It was pulled out of a cardboard box still containing dozens more.

beautiful course, beautiful area

My first time to travel to the Outer Banks and I loved the area and the race. Fall weather and cool temps made for a quiet and peaceful weekend -- very few tourists beyond runners. Loved the variety of the course - nice starting area, neighborhoods, bay views, dirt road in the woods with rolling hills, Wright Brothers Memorial, highway, the bridge, and nice finish area in Manteo. Shuttles worked well. I parked at Wal-Mart close to the start. We were shuttled to the school to wait and stay warm before the start, and from the finish back to Wal-Mart. **Bathrooms should have been available at the school! Manteo finish area was fun with food, music and awards -- street party feel. **Some confusion to the location and start of the Expo -- double check this info. Enjoyed expo -- easy packet pickup, nice selections and race merch. This was my 13th marathon and my FIRST since double bypass open heart surgery in March, 2017. Ran a 4:01:40 and loved all of it! Thanks for an awesome race weekend.

126th marathon! Great support from the city!

I had never run in this state and although there is a lot pretty things to see during the race the best part was running on the highway. I lost count of the number of cars that shouted encouragement to me throughout the race. Friendly volunteers and lots of water stations. Lots of food near the end. I got a place in Manteo and was less thatn 2 miles to the start.

Perfect Storm on the Coast

There are so many things going right for this race. The weather for the race was perfect -- mid-40s at race start with a slight tailwind for most of the first 20 miles. The course is almost entirely flat except for slight rolling hills during miles 10-13 and the bridge at mile 23. My Garmin tells me I hit 292 feet of total climbing. Speaking of the bridge, don't be afraid of it, it really isn't that bad but I suppose its placement at the end of the race can cause heartbreak for some. Crowd support was good throughout, but was especially strong during miles 1-10 and miles 23-26.2. There are some dull, quiet moments along US 158 that can be a bit of a drag. The neighborhoods came out well and offered homemade support as well as cheering. The official water stations were plentiful and so were porta-potties. The finish area (old town Manteo), is really charming and the race puts on a fun street party by the docks. Race organization was perfect from email communication before the race weekend to the expo to the start line. I didn't use the shuttles but saw plenty of them going up and down the course. Considering the flat course and ideal weather, I think this is a really good race for a PR or BQ attempt.

Plentiful aid stations & separate start for half

I loved this race! The organizers did a great job with the plentiful aid stations with water, Vaseline, etc. Two stations with GU. Point to point course was scenic and allowed for complete separation from half runners. (Even though I read about the trail it was surprisingly long with a narrow uphill finish. It was lovely and shaded, and added variety.) I am a slower runner and I was not really lonely. (5:45) Runners encouraged each other throughout. The finish was in a very cute area. Shirt, hat, and medal are nice and also race-specific (and gender specific for shirt).

Dont Miss

This marathon should make the top of your list. There isn't one thing that needs to be adjusted. The trail leg of the marathon is a welcome surprise.

Great course! Very flat.

This was my first marathon and was extremely pleased with it. I was nervous but the website was very organized and told me exactly where to go and where to park. First half was residential and pretty with parts near the water and parts in the woods. The last half was in the business section and more spread out. The last 5 miles are really neat as you run across the bridge into Manteo. Keep in mind it is usually windy at this time of year so a hat may not stay on. I loved this race!

PR course potential

I say it's a PR course, but I did not PR. I took the gamble with a bum leg that reduced training slightly. Most of the course is pancake flat and pleasant. Running on back roads first 1-10 miles. Great to run around the Wright Bro's Memorial. Miles 10-13 you go into a wooded trail that will knock you off pace slightly-rolling hills (good break from flat surface I must add). I had to latch on to someone to do the pacing on the trail. Once out you'll hit some good long stretches on 158 with a couple of detours into neighborhoods. Felt very safe on roads - lane is coned off for runners. Water stops were on point and ready throughout race. I noticed more fans during the first half (more residential). Very supportive. Later stages was lacking (area spread out), which I'm ok with. I still tagged onto that guy I saw in the woods to help with pacing. If you're a faster runner, there is a good chance you'll run alone during the second half or earlier. The bridge at 23 miles is not that bad to go over. It's where it's located during the race and that's part of the charm. If you've got the bridge, you've got the race. Backside is downhill and leveling out to Manteo for the finish. I don't eat much after 26.2, but was impressed with the block party going on in town. The 13.1ers were mostly there at the time, but I imagine there was plenty. This time of year the winds have a good chance to come from the N NE. Well, we had them 20-30 mph, mostly on our backs. Mostly cloudy during race, but you will be exposed to the sun on those long stretches. The day before it was 80 and sunny. Fortunately it was much cooler on race day. This was my first time in that area. Good job OBX!! Glad to have run there.

Top-Notch Small Town Marathon

I chose this to be my first marathon after reading about the course and knowing I prefer smaller events. OBX did not disappoint. From beginning to end, the weekend was fantastic. Small expo, but efficiently run. I chose to park my car at the finish and take the shuttle to the start (which I recommend). UPS Bag drop-off was well-run. Course was mostly flat, except for the trail section mile 10-ish thru 13.1 and the bridge at mile 23. I visit OBX most summers, so I enjoyed seeing the sites throughout the course. Support and Spectators were AMAZING, providing water/gatorade/portojohns/fuel at just about every mile. Just a short walk to my car after the race, too. Wholly recommend!

Great low-key race

This was my first marathon. I had picked this one 5 years ago when I first started thinking of running a full. I think this was the perfect first marathon for me. It was very well organized and not so big to feel overwhelming. The trail portion had more elevation change than the bridge at the end and was the most difficult part of the course in my opinion. All the spectators were incredibly friendly. The race is very well supported with porta-johns almost every mile and water every other mile. I am so glad I picked this for my first marathon. It is a beautiful low-key event. If you need to be constantly jockeying for your position and thrive on the cheers of the crowds, this might not be the race for you. I thought it was nearly perfect!

Nice low key marathon with lots of course supplies

COURSE: The course is relatively flat with the exception of the bridge at the end and a little elevation in the trail section. Speaking of which, I was not expecting three miles of quasi-trail running in the woods. I didn't mind it, I just wasn't expecting it. But the course has nice variety, the best parts probably being running around the Wright Memorial and the Virginia Dar Bridge. A nice community - spectators were sparse but friendly and enthusiastic. To me the best part was the abundance of course supplies. Water stops and portatpotties just about every other mile after mile 3, 4 Gu stops and Gatorade at possibly 6 or 7 spots. The half marathoners began halfway down the course and actually started 20 minutes earlier so the full marathoners were completely separate from the runners doing the half. EXPO: The Expo was OK - about what you would expect for a marathon with only ~1000 runners. Unfortunately we got some bad information about the road closures from a well-meaning but not fully informed volunteer but luckily we were able to find an actual information desk and got it sorted out. One nice thing about a smaller expo/race, though is you get in and out quickly with no hassles picking up the packet. ORGANIZATION: For the size of this race it seemed very well organized. As I mentioned, plenty of portapotties and other course support. There was a bag drop run by UPS. I didn't use it but it seemed to be going well. The course is a point-to-point and they had multiple shuttle services to get people around. They seemed to work well for the most part. One nice touch is that runners had the choice to either park near the start and get a shuttle back to their cars after the race or park near the finish and get a shuttle up to the start line before the race. SWAG: We got a nice T-shirt, finisher's medal, finisher's hat and logo pint glass - more than I expected. POST-RACE PARTY: It looked like there was a lot of great food and beer, and there were bands as well. Pretty good for the size of the race. I never feel like eating after a run of much over 10 miles so I didn't try any of it, but folks seemed to be enjoying it. In summary, I would recommend this race. The weather was perfect, it was a nice low-key marathon for me to re-introduce myself to marathons (I ran one previously, but it was 17 years ago). It would be a good first time race if you aren't the type that needs lots of spectators cheering you on.

Vacation Destination with a Hometown Atmosphere

This could be a hot, sunny course considering the location. Instead with the detours into wooded areas and neighborhoods, there was canopy and diversion. Quite often the wind was to our backs. It is a good plan to schedule this marathon in November. Special kudos to all of the course marshals who dotted the course wearing identifiable yellow bibs. Remote areas of the course had fan support and extra beverage stops. For anyone with a medical emergency, there was a superb medical tent at the end of the course. A friend needed an x-ray after a fall. The tent had a machine and gave her a CD to take to an orthopedic surgeon in her city - free of charge! Medical stations were prevalent along the course.

Disappointing experience

The Outer Banks are one of my favorite places on earth. This course really picks some of the ugliest parts of the OBX to run through: strip malls, new housing developments, and you won't see the ocean until the very end when you cross the bridge. The crowds were small but they cheered. Some of them did not understand marathon running: brownies, cookies, beer were all offered. The trail portion was pretty rough, largely because I am slower 4:45 and it was like running on dunes by the time I passed through. The only food at the end of the race when I finished was a pulled pork sandwich. Bananas, bagels all gone. And the shirts are kind of lame, but the visor is nice.

Perfect conditions and course - I will be back!

Just got back from running the 2014 OBX marathon and will definitely plan on heading back. We had wonderful conditions (50s, cloudy, slight tailwind) and I thoroughly enjoyed the course - PRed by 6 minutes! It is a nice, flat course (for the most part) that takes you to the other side of the Outer Banks that you don't typically see. Despite the long stretch down 158 on the second half, I thought the course organizers did a great job of mixing it up and sending us back into gorgeous neighborhoods so I didn't mind 158 at all - it was actually quite nice to spend a couple miles on it and get into my groove. As mentioned in other posts, the 3 miles of trails were a little rough - beautiful scenery but I fell off my pace by about 30 sec/mile (from 7:40s to 8:10s). I also didn't mind the bridge, it wasn't as along as anticipated and there were plenty of portalets and water along the route. The spectators were a little sparse, but the scenery more than made up for it. Great race!!

Great race; not a PR course

The positives: efficient organization; awesome finish area; plenty of medical support; beautiful place. The negatives: miles 10-13.1 was on a trail that was at first sandy then rocky then hilly, forcing a field of 1000 into singletrack; aid stations not at regular intervals. The bridge that so many talk about was fine. Yes, at mile 23 it was a challenge, but a good one, IMO. The trail portion, though, really slowed the field down; and it sapped a bit more energy than those miles should have. It was basically a cross country course, which is not what I want nor expect when registering for a road race. Other than that, it is a nicely organized event in a beautiful place. I would only run it again if they changed the course.

half-trail, half-road race

This course was (for the most part) great...but if I'd wanted a trail marathon, I would've signed up for a trail marathon. The first part of the trail (packed gravel) was fine; the second part was hilly and loose dirtdifficult to navigate and slowed a lot of people down. Otherwise, great course. Crossing the bridge is more mental than anything, but its placement (mi 23) certainly makes it a challenge. If it had not been for the 3 miles of dirt trail, I would've set a 3-5 minute PR. As it was, I matched my previous PR. It is also kind of demoralizing to see the finish line MILES before you actually get to it-the first time it's visible (you see the bridge) is mile 16, and then mile 18. Great spectators, good scenery-my only complaint is the 3 miles of dirt trail. Because of that, I probably will not sign up for this race again-just not my cup of tea.

Excellent race and course

This is my second OBX marathon - the organization seemed much better this year - excellent volunteers and very friendly. The course was great and very beautiful. The nature preserve and bridge are my favorite spots, although I struggled on the bridge this year. Mateo is awesome and the finish area well-organized. My two complaints 1. The mile marker flags were missing between about mile 15 and 17 - this is a difficult area on HWY 158, so the flags would have been nice to see. 2. It would be great to be able to see the finish line at least 1/4 mile in advance - maybe 1/2 mile. The multiple turns at the finish are not very motivating. Otherwise thanks for a great race and hopefully I be back in 2014.

Great Race, Great Course, Great Volunteers

I have ran 60+ Marathons and beyond and I would rank OBX in my top 4! The course was well supported Plenty of Aid! Always a welcome smile around each corner! Even on the trails there were groups of people out there to cheer you on! My husband and I did the Challenge, the 8k Saturday and the Marathon on Sunday BOTH GREAT RACES! Organization for the events was amazing! Way to Go OBX Marathon! We will be back again!

Fun Race

If you are looking for a fun mid-sized race in a scenic locale this is it. A variety of scenescapes to the course, including neighborhoods, historical sites, substantial water views, multi-use paths and trail running. Crossing the bridge to Manteo can be viewed as a positive or negative. It is a very pretty view, but it was very windy this year, so the hill on the bridge combined with the wind just fried me for the last three miles. I also would note that the post-race festivities are one of the best I've seen. An entire street in Roanake Island is closed to cars so that the runners and their supporters can enjoy food, beverages and live music, all the while the shops are open to customers (some spouses will like that!) While there are not a ton of spectators, they did a great job cheering on the runners. The only downside, also mentioned in other reviews, is the several mile component where you run on an unshaded four lane busy highway. My only other critique would be that there needs to be a better parking arrangement for the Expo, or find a different site - it was a somwehat of a long wait to find a parking spot, and many it seemed needed to walk quite a ways to get to the Expo once parked.

most beautiful course

one of the prettiest courses I've seen, esp. early miles, but it got tough on Croatan Hwy into the wind and really so crossing Roanoke Sound. Didn't care much for forest part - fun at first, but not for several miles. I guess OBSE has its reasons for providing escort cyclists, but they either rode back toward us in narrow traffic lanes or crept by without warning, and in late stages of marathon when our senses aren't so sharp, that's more than distracting. And please discourage the unofficial cyclists from 'supporting' their friends as it can be hazardous on a course that has narrow running 'lanes.' Aside from that, things were great. If it got warm I didn't notice, and the overall crowd support was more than I expected. It's great to see a community get behind a marathon rather than treat it as an annoyance!

Lot of fun

This was my second marathon ever and had a great time. The volunteers and crowd support was great, although sparce at times. The first third of the course is the fastest, which makes things difficult for many as many people go out too fast already. The middle third includes a hardpacked dirt and gravel road that does break pace leading into a narrow trail (somewhat hilly) that really can break pace. Both were soft. We had a strong headwind when we got to the bridge which destroyed pacing. After talking to others who have run this race before, they said the wind was the worse ever. However, The weather was perfect and the post party was well organized and very helpful. Volunteers were amazing. Course did run long, even though I hugged the turns, 2 tenths long according to my watch.

Great race in one of my favorite places on earth!

Though I didnt perform to the level I had planned, the 2013 OBX Marathon was still a fantastic experience. This was the first time I have truly hit that proverbial 'wall' at mile 21 or so, but I was still able to take intermittent walk breaks and finish within 14 minutes of my 03:55:00 goal. The organizers did a flawless job from my perspective; from the expo/packet pick-up to the finish line. I have spent a lot of time in the Outer Banks in the past 30 years, but this is the first OBX Marathon I have run. The course was great. The only surprise to me was the narrowness and 'roller coaster' character of the mulched path portion of the course. Don't construe this as a negative comment; I was just surprised by it to some extent! The spectators and volunteers were great every step of the way. Tons of great smile inducing signs and crowd encouragement. My son ran the 13.1 race (his first half marathon) and loved every minute of it also. I will be back, and hopefully with a wind at my back instead of in my face for miles 21 thru 24.5! Thanks to all involved for a great experience.

Great first marathon!

A couple of months ago my buddy and I decided that we wanted to run a marathon. We are from North Carolina so it just made sense to run this race. For the both of us it was our first marathon and we couldn't have picked a better one! The course was amazing, offering fantastic views along with what I would consider an easy difficulty rating. The organization of the event was flawless and the atmosphere for the entire weekend was more than I expected for my first marathon. From the expo to the post race party we were very satisfied. However, if you are a first time marathon runner I would highly suggest doing proper training before jumping into one of these events. I underestimated it and ended up with leg cramps that forced me to walk the last six miles or so. I definitely look forward to making this a regular challenge each year, already looking to sign up for 2014! Thank you to all the volunteers, participants, and spectators cheering us on.

Terrific race

This was the eighth running of this race and the people who told me that this is a good one definitely were right. You can tell that the Outer Banks residents embrace the race. Nearly all of the signs in front of businesses included a message such as runners welcome or good luck runners. The course support in the residential areas, particularly in the first 8 miles, was excellent and vocal. When I checked in at the Colonial Inn, they gave me a special goody bag they had ready for runners that included trail mix, an energy bar and a bottle of water. The management also was nice enough to give me extended checkout until 1 p.m. I've made long drives after marathons when the hotel/motel wasn't so accommodating. Its no fun to have to wait a few hours to take a shower, particularly for others in the car! In the weeks leading to the race, I got several informative emails about the race that were very helpful. Packet pickup was smooth (although parking wasn't easy) and the official pasta dinner was excellent. I left there completely stuffed, loving the tortellini with cheese sauce. I've gone to official pasta dinners for marathons that simply weren't that good. This was excellent and among the best (possibly only topped by the dinner at the Detroit Marathon that included cheesecake). Parking at the start was smooth. We parked at a nearby Wal-Mart and took a short shuttle-bus ride on a school activity bus to the start, where Porta-Potties were plentiful. The first 8 or so miles are a mixture of residential areas and trails, with good views of the Albemarle Sound. Mile 9 is a nice stretch that takes you through the park that surrounds the Wright Brothers National Memorial. Mile 11 and part of mile 12 shift to Old Nags Head Woods Road, a hard-packed dirt road, which wasn't too bad and did feature some mild hills. It was so heavily wooded that I actually felt a bit cool during that stretch. I also didn't trust my Garmin readings during that stretch. After that was the Nags Head Woods Nature Preserve trail with rolling hills for about 3/4 of a mile. I didn't mind the hills, but there were roots to avoid. With a classic marathon shuffle, I was constantly examining where I was about to step to avoid stumbling. I was glad when that stretch ended and I was back on pavement! From there until just after the 21-mile mark, the course mostly was a U.S. 158, a 5-lane highway. Traffic was closed to the far-right lane. There were two up-and-back sections off 158 toward the Albemarle Sound. It offered a welcome relief from 158, but each also put us into a strong headwind heading toward the sound. In each case, it was nice to get a tailwind coming back go 158. Shortly after the 21-mile mark, we shifted to U.S. 64, which also is a 4-lane (and sometimes 5-lane) road with the far-left lane closed to traffic for the runners. After the bridge, we take a left toward a beautiful finish in Manteo. I passed lots of half marathoners who were walking and that was fine until I was approaching the finish line. It was highly irritating about 50 feet from the finish line that I had to detour a bit to go around 3 walkers who were side-by-side. In addition to a nice medal featuring the Cape Hatteras lighthouse, finishers also got a nice visor. Here is my blog post about my race: http://runningtarheelfan.blogspot.com/2013/11/not-so-fast-my-friend.html

tough course- cross country trails and big bridge

4 mile Sandy Cross Country Course with sharp turns and hills. At least 1000 ft climb on the big bridge at mile 23. Winds were 15+ MPH today which added at least 5 minutes to finish time from years with no wind. This is NOT a easy flat beach course like Myrtle Beach. Well organized, Disappointed with a short sleeve T-Shirt for a marathon in November. Age group awards were a tiny pin that you attached to your finish medal landyard. Weak. Got a visor for finishing that says Half Marathon. I ran the Marathon. Nice celebration station at the end.

Great Organization - Fun Race

This is a great race if you want to go to a fun place to run in a very well organized event: especially for a volunteer organization run event. It's the most scenic marathon I have run (about 25). Some folks complain about the unpaved road section but I found it to be a nice diversion. It's a flat, fast course. The finish is well supplied with food and in a great location right in the heart of small town Manteo. One thing to note: the race is certified for distance only. It is NOT certified for state records. Separation from start to finish mean that is you are wanting to post a fast time on a fully certified course, you'll need to go somewhere else. Other suggestions: 1) take a friend who will help you with transportation to start. The race is nice enough to supply bus transport from the finish to start in the morning but you'll be up at 4:30 making it a long time between getting up and the start. 2) have your friend meet you at locations on the course with supplies. This race is a bit thin on aid stations.

Well organized

This is a well run marathon. The only issue is if you are running it for a fast time I would go elsewhere. The trail section gets really bottle-necked and if it rains (as it did the year I raced) it is a slippery mess. Otherwise it was well run and some beautiful scenery.

Good, not Great Marathon

This was my 45th marathon (35th State) and I found it to be slightly above average. The first half of it was nice, including the challenging trail run from mile 10 to 13. The second half was disappointing with much of it on the main roadway along side traffic with a blazing sun. Why not utilize the road right next to the ocean? The finish was frustrating as it involved numerous turns in the last half mile and you never saw the finish line. There was a lack of Gatorade in most of the first half. The race ends in a nice town that is basically shut down for the runners. Good food and 2 beers per runner. :( The medal was okay, but small. With a few improvements this could become a much better event.

well done small town marathon

This was marathon number 105 for me - very impressed with organization and volunteers; seems everyone said thanks for running our race - very cool! Unlike prior comments I did not have any issues with bathrooms - many along route or aid stations - more than adequate. First half of course was wonderful - enjoyed the dirt road/trail section miles 10-13. Bridge at 23 mile was a pace breaker but lead to nice section at finish. Traffic control was excellent - always a consideration when picking a marathon.

Great course with dedicated spectators.

This was not my first race, but it was my first full marathon. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED the trail section. I've seen some complaints in previous reviews about the trail section, and cannot figure out why...It's beautifully maintained with only a few mild inclines. Fast course, but the bridge at mile 23 is challenging. The bridge isn't overly steep, but the fact that it's at mile 23 makes it a true gut check. The spectators are wonderful and very enthusiastic. I would certainly recommend this race to others, even for their first full.

Beautiful place, so-so marathon

Always want to thank the people who take their personal time to put on events for runners. OBX is a great place. Pros & cons to any marathon, but water and bathrooms are what runners value the most. This marathon fell way short on aid stations. First one not until mile 3, and then they were too few and far between, like every 2 to 2.5 miles, in some cases 3 miles apart. Pretty unacceptable, especially in a place where it can get warm. Would suggest they start at mile 2 and go every 1 to 1.5 miles. Moreover, there was only water at most of them - less than half of the few stations they had was there any gatorade. If this can be fixed next year, this race will be greatly improved and on par with others in the region like Myrtle, Va Beach, etc. In any event, thank you race committee for all you do for runners.

Solid event, don't let the 'hills' scare you!

The Outer Banks marathon was a solid, well-organized event. This was my N.C. medal for a 50-state marathon mission, and I don't regret it at all! Overall it was beautiful, scenic, and enjoyable. Everyone is different when it comes to things they like about marathons...for me I don't like pancake flat courses. I appreciate hills for a change in momentum, terrain and an added challenge. This course was practically pancake flat save for the bridge around mile 23 and the section where you run into the Nags Head Woods Preserve for a few miles (that was my favorite part of the course); the first half of the course was quite scenic running past the awe-inspiring Wright Brothers Memorial, not to mention the gorgeous views of Kitty Hawk Bay. The second half of the course was where things got problematic, and this will all be dependent on race day conditions: there is no shade. If you have a cloudless sky and a warm day (it was a high of 73 that day), it can really be draining. There were very, very few sections where there was any shade. Winds were low that day, but I imagine wind can be a problem some years as well. The miles along Croatan Highway were pretty bad. Simply because it was warm with full sun, and FLAT concrete as far as the eye could see. You sometimes made a right hand turn into a nice residential area, only to go BACK onto Croatan Highway. You start to scan the distance looking for the bridge leading into Manteo because it really seemed endless at times. I found the flat sections of Croatan Highway were the worst part and I was anxious to get it over with as soon as I could. The views of Jockey's Ridge State Park were the only saving grace to this part, in my opinion, as well as the sections that took you off course to get another glimpse of the water. The Washington Baum Bridge is pretty overhyped as being a big hill, it's not nearly as terrible as it looks from afar. It's a slow climb to the top, but not nearly as bad as hills in other races I have run (Blackberry Mountain at the Hatfield McCoy Reunion marathon instantly comes to mind). Once you get to the top it's smooth sailing to the finish, but those final miles still felt like the longest miles ever. Pros to this race: Good organization, plenty of communication from the race director considering the area had gotten pummeled by Hurricane Sandy weeks beforehand. Four Gu stations were perfectly spread out, plenty of water/Gatorade and aid stations. It was probably the first marathon where I was NOT dehydrated despite the warm/sunny conditions, they really come through with ample support on the course. Good quality shirt, the medal is OK, and you get plenty of food, beer, and fluids at the finish. The ice cold towels were a lifesaver! Cons: I was disappointed that the pirate theme was not prominent at the race this year. No sign of it on the shirts or medals, and I really looked forward to that. I saw some dressed in pirate gear but it wasnt a huge theme. Porta-johns seemed lacking on the course, luckily I didn't need to worry about it that day! The lack of shade is the major factor to this race. You just have to know in advance the sun WILL cook you if you had a picture perfect day like we had this year!

Flat and fast

This race had an excellent course, good organization, and wonderful post-race party. The course was really great - started in shaded residential area, went though a cool forest, and finally across the bridge - which really was not too bad. The final run through Manteo was aided by lots of spectators. There was plenty of water, gatoraide, and Gu (even after the half marathoners had gone through). The temperature was warm, especially the last hour, so the race could have started earlier to help. The expo was small but well organized. My only complaint was the pre-race information was inadequate. There was no emails send to the registrants. I had to email several times to get updates. Apparently, Facebook updates were given, but Facebook should not be the source of information for the race. Also, there was no in-race runners updates for spectators unless one bought the iphone app. After spending $100 for registration, race updates should be provided for free. All in all, an excellent race, location, and course.

Overall, an okay marathon

This was my first OBX marathon. Some comments: Pros: Easy shuttle to the race start from Manteo. Yes, we had to be there at 5:45 and the bus ride was pretty long, however, I thought it was organized well. In addition, the volunteers were awesome at the aid stations. I never had a problem getting water/gatorade. The finish line was nice. Manteo is a great town. The food was plentiful. I didn't have beer or the bbq sandwiches but I had plenty of water, gatorade, bananas, and protein bars. The medals were also terrific. In addition, I am very happy with the photos of the race. I have at least 10 awesome photos to choose from. Cons: I didn't particularly like the trail section of the course. It was pretty hilly and if it was flat, I bet I would have shaved at least 2 minutes off the race. It was pretty isolated and lonely. The 2nd half of the race was way too warm. I think they should start the marathon at 7:00. I still don't understand staggering the half and the full. The half started way up by the Wright Memorial. If it started earlier, maybe I would not have been so hot on the back end of the course. Running down the highway was also boring but hard to have a race at the beach without running on a main straightaway. All in all, a nice race. I did well so that added to the good rating! I would consider doing it again.

Where's the Finish line??

Overall, I really liked this race. There were some beautiful views of the sound throughout the race. It wasn't too big, so you didn't get lost in the crowd. The emails and information in the race packet kept you informed about how to get to the start and what to do. The EXPO was excellent for a small race - I love the free running belt and the charm on the metal. Being an ECU grad, I love the pirate theme. My biggest suggestion for next year is to move the finish line to the end of that long stretch after turning off 158 into Manteo so that runners can see it from a distance and be motivated to keep going or run faster. As it was, they had someone telling you that you were half a mile from the finish, but you still had to make three or four turns before even seeing the finish line. It is a little demotivating to think it's right around the corner, and at every turn not see the finish. I agree with others that the trail was tough. From miles 10-13 it was pretty hilly for a 'flat course,' and zapped my energy, which was hard to regain afterwards. The water stops should be closer to the mile markers toward the end. I remember reading in the race packet that there would be water and gaterade at almost every mile from 20 on (with the exception of mile 24, which was strange), but when I got to the mile marker, it was still another quarter of a mile before actually getting to the aid station. By that point, you're living mile to mile, and it would have been better to at least know that the water/gaterade wasn't going to be there until a little ways after the mile marker. The volunteers were excellent! There wasn't an aid station I didn't easily get water/gaterade, and there wasn't a place on the race where I was confused as to where to go. The fans were great when they were there. Being a smaller race, there weren't a lot of fans. There were many times toward the end where I was the only one around. As far as a destination goes, it was very nice. It would be better if they could get the lighthouse opened for the weekend so people from out of town could get the full experience while visiting this great area.

I fell in love with OBX!

I participated in the 'Blackbeard Challenge' and ran the 8k on Saturday and the marathon on Sunday. I can honestly say this was a great even from start to finish and fun, fun, fun! The pirate theme is pervasive throughout the event and while some people might find it cheesy, I thought it made the weekend a unique experience. My 8k pictures even have a pirate chasing me across the finish line! Course: With the exception of the miles on the highway in the back half (which is nicely broken up by neighborhood miles along the water, for the most part) I loved the course. The views of the water were great, the Wright Brothers Memorial was cool to see, etc. I did not think the trail portion was that bad and I do not really run on trails at all. I liked being out of the sun! Also, I ran up every step of the bridge (slowly) and it is doable. I can't drink Gatorade on the course because it upsets my stomach, but I could see why others would need it more often. It was hot out there in the later miles and probably should be at every water stop. Expo: Good expo with everything you need. Smaller than many races but it gets the job done. Cool race gear, in my opinion. Organization: The facebook page and emails do a great job of communicating with the participants, and the info packet they sent out had everything I needed to know. It was very reassuring to have no logistical questions. Medals/Shirts: My favorite so far!! Follows the pirate theme and the medals are incredibly unique and cool. The shirts are great but I heard the women's sizes were cut very small and they are trying to get this fixed for next year. Knowing the huge variation sizes in women's shirts, I always just get an XS men's, so I didn't have this problem. We stayed at a great hotel right on the water for very cheap. Race day transportation and parking was a non-issue. I was never alone on the course but never crowded either. All the spectators were very enthusiastic and excited to see us - they kept thanking the runners for coming. There isn't a ton of crowd support, but you never feel alone. The locals are thrilled to have runners there and it shows. I just had a really great time with this event. I can't recommend it highly enough. If you're looking for a great midsize destination marathon, this is the one!

OBX MarathonA great Adventure!

Three of us in our party ran the full marathon. We loved this marathon and had a wonderful time overall in the Outer Banks. This was my 30th different marathon, and it is one of my favorites. The things I particularly liked: The half marathon started 13 miles south of us and weren't a factor in our race. The course was very unique, very memorable, and not too terribly hard. Love love love the medal with the attached charmvery original. The festive finish area, especially nice due to such a sunny and pretty day. Other factors to consider: The second half is quiet and does have stretches on roadsides of high speed trafficno bands or people out there, no shade. It really tests your will... Our female small tech tops were child size, but we were told to come back at 5:00 for an exchange, which we did...a long line of us women doing so, so they missed their mark on shirt sizes this year. Nice shirt though! Although I loved the trail section the most I did not keep my pace, and it was a struggle to switch back to road and get back on pace. I would not shoot for a PR on this course.

Impossible not to love OBX

I'm always amazed at the crtical remarks of people about marathons. OBX 2011 was my 35th full and let's face it, the Outer Banks is the best. How can you not love this place? I've been coming here since 1969 when I was 2 years old and it's my favorite place to be. I just don't know what people want from a race. It's SUPPOSED to be hard. I hate to say it but my mother can't hold my hand the whole race. If bathrooms are such a big deallearn to poop in the open.

Room for improvement...

Pros: -great volunteers -OBX communities really support the race with tons of 'welcome runners' signs, pasta feeds etc. Our hotel even gave us goodie bags upon checkin (a first for me) -Decent crowd support for the size of the communities and an off-season date. People here are friendly. -Interesting destination. Try hang gliding while you are here! -Nice medal -Good food offerings and beer at the finish Cons: -Shuttle service from Finish to Start location went smoothly but left runners standing in the cold for more than an hour before the race. -Race shirts were a big disappointment. Apparently shirts were 2 sizes smaller than they should have been so those to the expo early traded up sizes seriously depleting the numbers of larger size shirts available..many people did not get what they had requested (not that it would have fit). The 1/2 marathon situation was even worse..they were offering shirts from the race 2 years prior! - First water available was 3 miles in and I saw no Gatorade until just before mile 11...inexcusable. - It was a warm day. Around 50 at the start and upper 60s at the finish. Most of the first half of the run has some shade, but the second 1/2 is unshaded..just my luck it was a beautiful sunny day. -Majority of first half of the race involved a lot of s-curves, so lots of tangent running. And those roads were cambered. -Do not discount the difficulty of the 3 miles of trail running in the first half of the race. Packed gravel with sand and then fine mulch and pine needles really required you to dig in to get traction. AND the majority of the hills that you will find on the course are on this section of the run. I lost time here and my legs never recovered. -2nd half of the marathon course involves a great deal of running on the main road thru OBX, so you have vehicular traffic next to you and not a lot to look at. Given the location the run could be so much more scenic than it is.

Very well organized race in a great location

The OBX marathon weekend was a good experience. The OBSE does a very good job organizing a point-to-point marathon for a mid-sized marathon. SWAG: Nice painted color medal with a pirate map them. Good custom lanyard too. Shirts were short sleeve tech with the race logo. COURSE: First 10 miles are great through scenic neighborhoods with frequent looks over the water. Next three are in Nags Heads Woods. This off road section was my favorite. It was however surprisingly hilly. I have run hillier courses, I was just caught a little off guard for being at the beach. Once leaving the woods, you have 13 miles to go down the main road with traffic. Twice you detour through the neighborhoods, but the second half is just long and brutal. POST RACE: The streets of Manteo set up for a great party. Music, beer, food, pirate pictures and more. I did not eat, not I can comment on the food that was there. TRANSPORATION: Being a point-to-point race you need transportation to the start or the finish. For us there seemed to be ample buses. We had a short wait to get back after we finished. AID STATIONS: I strongly suggest OBX follow the other mid-size races and have electrolytes at every aid station. This year was pretty warm for November. Not having Gatorade until mile 7 was not ideal. After that at least twice the aid stations went back to just water. A small detail, but one I feel is important. OTHER RACES: This is a great family trip. It is a three day weekend. Kids can race on Saturday in the Fun Run, 5k, or 8k. HOTELS: Lots of great affordable hotel options available with a late check out option. Overall, a good marathon experience. If you are looking for a mid-sized fall marathon, OBX is worth the time.

Fun in the sun except for OMG Bridge

My husband and I ran this marathon (my 2nd, his 1st) and we enjoyed the course. The dirt-rocks-pine needle part around miles 10-13 were a bit rough on the legs. The course was pretty well stocked with water & gatorade stops as well as energy gel stations (4 total). They also had ample Porta Potty and Medic stations along the route. The Washington Baum bridge (or as they called it, 'the OMG bridge') at mile 23 was brutal but from there on it was a nice downhill/flat finish. The finishing chute was well laid out but the post-race food was rather disappointing. I would hope for future races they could get better donations. Overall, couldn't have asked for better weather (though I did get a little sunburn from it being so sunny out) and would maybe do it again in the future.

A nice mix of scenery, great organization

You can read more expanded info on the course from previous comments, I call it a good mix of neighborhood, trail, and open road... and a big bridge. Organization was great, stops were great and they had gels right where published, life was good there. This was my 18th marathon this year but I got to experience something new. 99% of the community had signs all over with 'welcome runners' plastered all over the place and supported the participants... except my hotel. I stayed two nights to spend an extra day in town, when I checked in I asked for a late checkout so I could shower, the attendant said that needs to be requested on the day of departure, OK fine. On race morning while I was running, my wife asked for a late checkout and was told 'out by noon or you get charged for another day, NO EXCEPTIONS', so I had a nice long sweaty drive home. So this is NOT a knock on the race organizers by any means, it's not their fault at all, but if you visit here I do not recommend the Best Western Ocean Reef as they would not allow a late checkout and so don't expect one when you go. Surely there are other places that really do support the participants... good luck!

need more bathrooms

My thoughts are that if we are going to be running as long as we had on the main highway...or even through the residential area....you need to have WAY more bathrooms. You only had 2 porta johns at the places that DID have them....making for too long a line or wait. On the highway...there was no where to even ...um....hide behind. Lost valuable time.

Won't be back

This was my 2nd marathon and perhaps the first one spoiled me but I wasn't impressed. The course was just ok, the beginning contained some uneven roads and the trails were more rolling than the 'flat course' description. Perhaps I didn't look around enough, but I didn't see the scenery others seemed to enjoy so much. The orginization was good but the start was weak, no music and a cap gun to indicate the start.

Ran the first one in 2006, back in 2011

I ran the first one in 2006. Got drenched on Rt 158 heading toward Manteo for about an hour. Finish line was messed up. Understand that that has been changed. Otherwise, a great course. We vacation there every year. Love the place. I ran it because we love the Outer Banks and I knew the course before running it. Looking forward to 2011.

First half, GREAT; second half, OKAY

Nice, flat course and the first half is interesting and follows quiet back roads and trails. The second half is very exposed and follows main roads - but be careful: the sun and wind will cook you if it is not a cloudy day! All that said, I had a great time and would do it again. Nice excuse to spend a few days in the Outer Banks! Had a good group of runners (8) in a beach house - good times.

Awesome race, well supported

A great race, well supported with great volunteers and spectators. The first half of the course is much more scenic than the second half, and the second half is also much more exposed - 5 stars for the first half, 3 stars for the second half = 4 stars!

I qualified for the Boston Marathon for the first time with this marathon. This was my 6th overall marathon (my first time running in the Outer Banks Marathon). I loved the scenery (water), and the bridge at mile 23 was not so bad. This is a good marathon.

Perfectly Organized Marathon

I picked the OBX Marathon as my first and I'm glad I did. If you're a first-timer, look no further; you've found your race. The course is flat, except for two hills. Due to all of the twists and turns in the neighborhoods, It's not a fast course, but it is fun! Everything was completely explained on their website. The packet pick-up the day before was as simple as simple can get. The start was easy to get to. They had a few different options regarding where to leave your car and shuttle transportation to your car before and after the race. Starting at mile 3, they had water stations every 2 miles. I think after mile 7, all water stations also had Gatorade. A few water stations also had Hammer Gels. There was so much to see during the first 10 miles (people cheering, water views, trivia signs, etc.), I didn't even bother turning on my iPod until mile 10. The off-road portion (Miles 10-13) was a nice change of pace and was easy to run. The last half had some highway stretches that were a bit boring, but not too bad. There were plenty of easily accessable spots along the route for my family to stop and cheer. There were plenty of police along the entire route directing traffic away from the course. The bridge at mile 23 looked a lot worse then it was. It's really nothing to worry about. The finish had water, Gatorade, peanut butter, apples, bagels, soup and beer. Not bad at all. The people of the Outer Banks are simply awesome! They treated us great and they helped make my first marathon a wonderful experience!

Great Marathon from Start to Finish

I have run 4 other marathons ranging from the very large (Marine Corps) to the very small (Ellerbe Springs, NC - with fewer than 75 people). They each were wonderful for various reasons. However, I have to say that the OBX was by far my favorite. From the hometown crowd support that only Eastern NC can offer, to the great water views, to the never-predictable-or-boring course, to a finish in Manteo that put a smile on my face. I wish I could say its not good because I would not want this race to get any larger, but I must admit: it's that good. Come enjoy what the best of coastal NC has to offer and enjoy a well organized, scenic race as well.

Beautiful course and very good organization

As usual, the OBX community put on a great race. I've run the half marathon twice and this was my first OBX Full Marathon. The course was very nice and varied with ocean views, trail running and running through the neighborhoods. Although the spectator crowds may not have been as numerous as in previous years, it was still enough to keep me going. I finished the second half slightly faster than the first, passing people that were half an hour ahead of me halfway. I will never understand the "run as hard as I can and then hit the wall at mile 15" runners, but to each his own, I guess. The post-race offerings were good, with bananas, bagels, clam chowder and free beer. I didn't see the Dunkin Donuts stand this year, but perhaps I just missed it.

Just Not Improving

I ran this marathon 2 years ago, but chose to do only the half last year and this year. I didn't care very much for the whole marathon course, i.e., the first half through the mulch, back road and wooded trail. Some rate this very high, but it's not my kind of thing and a definite non-PR or BQ course (at least for me). There just seems to be a smaller crowd each year - fewer homeowners that come out to cheer, no music along the way unless a resident was playing a radio or CD, no cheerleaders as seen in many other marathons (even though the profits support public education in Dare County), and I didn't even notice as many "trivia" signs along the course like in years past. I don't know; maybe I'm expecting too much - but I'm looking for a little improvement each year and haven't noticed any. I will still attend every year because its a good excuse to go to the Outer Banks (my wife and I bring along about 20 friends to run as I have a vacation home on Hatteras). One other minor comment: The emails from OBX Marathon offered a $50 prize to the best pirate costume. I was fully dressed as Jack Sparrow and had a friend running along with me as a pirate wench - maybe you saw us. Apparently no one from the race staff did! Not that I think we should have won the prize, but I didn't see many others in pirate costumes. No one said anything to us after the race and so we just went back to the house. I just wonder who won. Well, enough about this one - see you all next year - but NOT in pirate garb.

More challenging than I expected

I've only done 2 marathons, and both of them were this year: Shamrock in the spring, and OBX in the fall. I trained well, hoping to shave 6 minutes or better off my spring time, to qualify for Boston 2012. I assumed the courses would be similar - I was right and I was wrong. Here's what I was wrong about: there are 2 miles of trail and a honking big bridge. Since I am from the Roanoke area, and climbed Mill Mountain 24 times this summer, I was not afraid of the bridge. However, putting the bridge at mile 23? Tough! Having to look at the bridge for about a mile before reaching it? Even tougher! But, running a marathon is not for the weak, and I persevered.... The trail was enjoyable for me, as I do some trail running here. Nice and shaded. What I was dismayed to discover, though, was that one of those trail miles was at 10:43 pace, and I was attempting 9:09 to 9:20. That mile cost me dearly. Then there was the Siamese cat in the residential area that crossed the road, back and forth, back and forth, around many runners. It got right in my path, so I jumped over it. Talk about an obstacle course! The spectators were very gracious; nowhere but there have I ever heard: "Thank you for running our race!" There was one female spectator in particular that I need to thank: she was at mile 26 holding a sign that said, "Make Pain Your Bitch" and it is thanks to her that I rallied and plowed through to the finish line. She called out my name as I looked at her sign, and I qualified for Boston with 14 seconds to spare. The Expo: just about all of the vendors were in Richmond instead. Food: Gatorade, bagels, oranges. There was a vat of peanut butter but I could barely chew and nearly choked, although I can't blame them for that. Volunteers: took me to triage, even though I said I was fine. I appreciated their concern, since I had no family there. Beer: the other gentleman was wrong about the beer; I got 2 free beers Food Vendors: Kelly's was there giving away small samples of clam chowder; boy, did that hit the spot! When they found out my finishing time, they gave me another cup! Freebies: I loved the insulated black lunchbag I got at the finish. Different! All in all, Southern hospitality and a beautiful but tricky course. Will I go back? You betcha!

Beautiful Varied Course

The most variety of surfaces I have run a marathon on. From rural road to waterfront trail, dirt road, forested and wood chipped path, secondary highway and up and over a long bridge. I really liked the course. Pretty flat course other than some hills in the forest path and the 23-mile bridge hill. Loved the 3/4 loop around the Wright Brothers monument. The course is twisty enough that you will save time if you can run the tangents. Great volunteers and great organization. Just about every hotel and restaurant and plenty of stores had a "Welcome OBX Runners" sign out. And no wonder the burger joint I went post-race was probably 80% filled with runners replenishing their protein needs. The hotel I stayed at also put out an early breakfast for OBX Marathon participants. Decent-sized expo for this level of race, though it was a little crowded. Weather was great this year; thank you to the organizers for making the right sacrifices to the weather gods. Not a huge number of spectators and no bands (except at the end), but the water stations were well manned and stocked with a couple of gel stations enroute. Plenty of course marshals to keep you on track. A few runners were in pirate costume. Arrrgh! Tech marathon shirt and finisher medal were nice and not too gaudy. The insulated lunch bag at the end was a nice touch to carry your post-race fluids and food. Found plenty of bagels with PB or cream cheese and fruit to eat. Had to search for the free beer and clam chowder, but I found them. Bring money with you if you want to buy anything more fancy to eat. Overall, a race I would recommend to my running friends to do.

Off-road portion tougher than I expected

What I liked: Beautiful scenery Very helpful and friendly volunteers Spirited spectators What I didn't: Early on, splits were not marked or were unclear when you hit the mile marker. Needed more frequent water early on... warm weather contributed. Although it was pretty, portions that were off-road were on pretty soft ground at times. I pulled a muscle and I think running on the sandy ground 10 miles into the race, using different muscles, is probably why. What they could improve: The "Booty Bags" are nice but didn't really contain any freebies. The runners food after the race was almost non-existent. I saw Gatorade, sliced apples and pieces of bagels. The $85 entry fee is higher than the other races I entered (Indianapolis, Air Force and Columbus), but all of those races had better post-race food and a free beer. Outer Banks had other options but you had to buy that stuff and my wallet was in my car five blocks away.

Had a Great Time!

I loved this marathon! The start was woodsy and set the stage for a scenic run. This marathon didn't have any pacers and I wondered if that contributed to everyone running extremely fast from the get-go. I was in the 9-11 minute/mile wave and people were going quite a bit faster than that, which meant that everyone passed me right away. I think pacers must really help slow down the urge to go all-out at first. Anyway, the first half of the marathon was incredibly scenic and interesting. I loved running through the woods on the nature paths. I had no previous trail running experience, but found that the dirt and sand provided relief to my knees. During the 2nd half of the marathon, runners did spend several miles running next to cars stuck in traffic alongside the main road. There are so many beautiful parts of the Outer Banks and I wondered why we didn't get to run on the less busy street near the ocean. The hill at mile 23 wasn't that horrible... it just looks daunting. But anticipating it helped to break things up. The finish line was really cool; you feel so close, but can't see the end until you turn the corner... and then there it is!

Beautiful Run

My first OBX Marathon. The course is beautiful. Running along the highway wasn't so bad. The first 10 miles are very flat, with pretty views of the sound. I welcomed the hills and terrain when we ran through the woods. Going over the bridge was fun. The traffic was so backed up that the people in the cars were cheering for the runners the entire time. I thought the spectators were extremely enthusiastic! I read some comments that it's not a course for a PR. I did have a PR and I qualified for Boston. This is one of the prettiest marathon courses.

Great

Pretty course - scenic and varied - and great organization. I loved the pirate theme; all of the volunteers were dressed as pirates, and lots of runners were in pirate costumes. :) It was my 8th marathon, so I have a few to compare it to. WELL DONE!!

Nice Scenic, Flat Marathon

The best part of this course is definitely the first half. It covers some very nice coastal neighborhoods and woods, and it goes by the Wright Memorial. The second half is mostly spent running alongside a road with cars very nearby and no shade, so it got to be pretty hot those last 10 miles. The start line is in an odd area, on a remote road next to a lumber yard I think, but getting dropped off at the start was easy enough. The finish in Manteo was very nice. The course is super flat except for some hills on the trails around mile 13 and the big bridge into Manteo, which wasn't so bad. The cool breeze and the coastal views were enough to take my mind off of the hill. Lots of great scenery overall. If you need a lot of crowd support, this isn't your race, but when we did have spectators they were great. The expo was pretty packed, a larger space would be nice, but there were a good number of exhibitors. The technical shirt and medal were pretty low-quality compared to every other marathon I've run. I liked the visor we received at the finish line. All in all, though, a nice, small, flat, scenic race.

Great Organization; Pretty First Half.

My husband and I are marathon directors, so we really marveled at the outstanding organization and community support for this event. BRAVO to the communities of the Outer Banks on such an outstanding event! If you are looking for a PR course, this is not the "fast and flat" type. The first half is very nice, but it has many curves and corners (try to run the tangents). And it's NOT flat, although there's nothing big; it's definitely hilly in the trail portion especially. The second half is largely out on the highway and completely in full sun (HOT), which I am not a big fan of. If you are looking for a destination marathon & well put on event, this is your place to come. If you want to train and run your best time possible, this is not your race. Everything we received was great except for the vastly oversized, cheaply done shirts; and the food at the finish was pretty poor. I was one of the faster runners, so I was not getting leftovers. All things aside, the event is well put on and in a great venue, so it is worth going to and I would do this marathon again.

Lovely, diverse course!

This was my 10th marathon and probably my 4th favorite. This is saying a lot because I try to run them in interesting areas. I thought the weather was fabulous. Even when it heated up, the breeze was always there and there was hardly any humidity! Course support is top-notch. Don't bother bringing gels. They have PLENTY for you! This course is so pretty! I really feel like I saw some beautiful areas I wouldn't have otherwise gotten to! I didn't think the bridge was that bad, and I am from the flats! It kind of broke things up a bit and the view was just great! I didn't love the trail portion as much as some others did. I had thought it was shorter, but it seemed to go on and on. My friend and I tried to power through the little hills and turns and SAND, and we just never seemed to get anywhere. Word of advice: take that part easy so you don't put out all of your energy before you even reach the halfway point. Otherwise, the course was excellent. The food provided at the end was not adequate, though: Apple slices, bananas, wheat bread, and peanut butter. No free beer either! Still, I'm so glad that I chose this one! Nice job, OBX!

Wonderful! A Must-Do!

What a friendly, supportive town! Thank you to all of the residents and businesses. The weather was perfect. Shuttle service to the start was great. I liked the wave start! I was never bunched up in a pack. The course was as flat as a course can get, and therefore I was able to set a PR. Yes, the bridge at mile 23 seemed cruel at the time, but every race has to have some "trademark." This was my first marathon that I did not have ANY soreness the following week. I loved looking at the neighborhoods. I saw the cutest pink house. The pirate theme is super. Never a line at the port-o-pots. I don't know how that happened. Don't change a thing!

Tougher than you'd think

The pros: - Organization (shuttles) was excellent - Fan support was great - Very nice cloth bag, tech shirt, visor, medal - First half (especially the woods road) was beautiful and diverse - Vacation in the Outer Banks! The cons: - The second half is HOT with NO SHADE - I was so thirsty at mile #21, and the cups had barely one gulp in them. Could they be running out of water??? - They give cool washcloths at the finish line, but they take them back before you can leave the chute Overall: Personally, I won't be running OBX again because the hot sun really wears me out (two years in a row). But if you're okay with hot weather, it's a great race. While it's completely flat, it's not quite as easy as you'd think. But the organization and fans were beyond expectations.

OBX Marathon Gets Better & Better

This marked the third year in a row of running the OBX marathon. I agree with most comments already posted - scenic, challenging course; great spectator support; nice area. However, it's apparent that this race is growing in popularity and the organizers are stepping it up. The best one so far. The medals were excellent for all the various races. There was just a sense of class about this event. The Outer Banks really embraces this weekend.

This was my first marathon and the conditions were absolutely perfect. Plenty of fan support, water, Gatorade, etc. The first half was beautiful - the three miles in the woods were both challenging and an ego boost... that was my favorite part!

Run With the Pirates!

This marathon had so much going for it. The expo was in a community center in Kill Devil Hills, and was quite large. I arrived about 10:00 a.m., and it was already overrun with people. Parking was hard to find, but it all worked out. The starting line was in Kitty Hawk, near the intersection of Highway 158 and Woods Road. Parking was available at the school across the highway. Other parking options were available - from Wal-Mart and Manteo - with shuttle service. The start was at 7:20 a.m., which is an unusual time. So we needed to be paying attention. There was a runner cap for this race, but I never heard if it sold out. The half marathon was the second half of the marathon course, so the marathon start line was not as crowded with this set up. The starting line routine was unlike anything I have seen before. They lined up the runners in groups (by projected finish time); then they let the groups go one at a time. Each successive group had to wait a minute or two until they were released by the timing folks. I am not sure what purpose this served, unless there was a potential to overload the timing computer. This method just meant that there was a bigger gap between gun time and clock time. Again, it all worked out fine. The early part of the race was on country roads. Just past Mile 3, we were running on a paved trail that gave way to a beach road in a residential area with Albemarle Sound to the right. That was scenic. From Mile 4 to Mile 7, there were lots of folks out cheering for the runners. About Mile 8 we were running along side of First Flight Airport (with no chain link fences). Turning the corner there was the Wright Brothers Memorial. We circled about 2/3 of the monument - a huge sand dune - then crossed a field and entered another residential area. About 9.5 miles in, the road turned to dirt and entered the woods. We were on a kind of clay and sand dirt road. Part of it was packed down and part of it was more like gray beach sand, so it was a bit of a challenge. And this road was a series of low profile hills. At mile 12.5 we turned off the dirt road on to a trail through the woods. A half-mile later we were out of the woods, at the midway point of the course. Here we entered Nags Head, and were running on Highway 158. We had a couple of detours into residential areas, but otherwise we stayed on the highway until reaching Roanoke Island. While running along Route 158, traffic - restricted to one lane - was backed up and going very slowly. The bridge to Roanoke Island was the endurance test for this race. It was huge, and you could see it coming. I just kept my head down and ran as much of the bridge as I could. Just like that we passed mile marker 23 and were heading down the other side. The traffic backup continued until mile marker 25, where we turned toward the town of Manteo. At mile marker 26 we turned another corner, going down the stretch and were almost home. Some wise guys put up a sign there that said, "Short cut" with an arrow pointing straight ahead. Very funny. The Outer Banks really plays up the pirate theme. That was fun. The race was well organized from start to finish. There was Hammer Gel available at four aid stations, from about mile 9 to mile 22. There were several first aid stations along the way. There was water and Gatorade throughout the course, and cheering aid station workers. Fan support was outstanding, and near the best of what I have seen. The town of Manteo (finish line) kind of got overrun with people, and some local merchants said they had trouble being able to get to their shops and stores. The finish line routine was typical: Bananas, apples, sandwiches, water and more Gatorade. Even nearing five hours, there were still a lot of people in the streets and finish line area. A band played for the folks about a block away. Restaurants and shops nearby looked pretty busy. This was a fun race; it was mostly flat, well supported, and it was a PR record for me. But when I started, my objective was just to cross the finish line. The PR was just an added blessing on this very good day. One last thing: The medal had a pirate skull and cross-bones on the back of it. How cool!

Worth the trip!

This was a fun event. The race was well organized, and the volunteers were first rate. Water stops were well staffed, well equipped, and smoothly run. Most of the course is great. I loved the trail section, which offered shade, scenery, and a welcome break from the pavement. Most of this off-road section is well-compacted and fairly wide and does not need to be feared! After being spoiled by a pretty flat course, the bridge felt longer than it really is, but that's Mile 23 for you, right? And without the bridge, we wouldn't have the amazing finish in downtown Manteo! The post-race party in the streets of this great little waterfront town was a blast. The perfect weather was a nice bonus, too.

Well organized, great spectators, nice first half

I really enjoyed the first half of this course, which went through some pretty residential areas, along some bike paths, around the Wright Brothers Memorial and even on three miles of trails. The second half was a bit tedious, being mostly on the main highway with no shade. I think it would have been better if this had been an out-and-back course, which would also eliminate the need for the shuttle bus back to the start. Overall, a very good event that was well organized with great crowd support.

I'll Be Back

This was my first marathon. I could not have asked for a better place to become a marathoner. The course was diverse and challenging. The trail portion was demanding, as was the Washington Baum Bridge at mile 23. The spectators were simply wonderful and the organization was flawless. I plan on making this race an annual event for me and my family.

Great event!

Well organized event. The pirate theme was perfect, and the town/businesses were so welcoming to the runners. I did not like the portion of the course through the woods (loose sand, tree roots, narrow trail, some mulch, and rolling hills for three miles), but it in no way took away from the overall weekend. I would recommend this marathon to anyone looking for a first or 100th!

Scenic run. A must-do!!!

This run was gorgeous and we had great weather! The expo was well organized and packet pickup went smoothly. I switched from half to full and I had a volunteer walk me right to where I needed to go, making sure I was taken care of. The town is all about this race, as it brings in a crowd during the off-season, and the course spectators were great. The course was relatively flat, except for a few small hills on the wooded trail and then the bridge, but even that wasn't horrible. Water, Gatorade and gel stations were well stocked throughout the course. Great race, and I will definitely be back!

One of the best I've done

What a great experience! Make sure you go a day or two early so you can enjoy the beach, the Wright Brothers Memorial, and the seafood. It was a top-notch event, and the organizers did a fabulous job. I managed to PR, but that's not a given on this course, with a hilly dirt road early in the race, and a monster bridge near the finish. The course offered a scenic view over a varied route. It was rarely boring. The towns supported the marathon more than I've ever seen. It seemed like every business had a sign out welcoming runners to the area, and people came out of their houses and lined the streets for a majority of the race. My only suggestion is that the aid stations be spaced closer together. It seemed like forever before we hit the first station, and then they just didn't come often enough after that. They weren't sparse by any means, but seemed spread too far apart to keep our thirst quenched. Also, I'm gonna start docking "Organization" one star each time the race has an official prayer at the start. Organizers shouldn't assume the runners want a Christian prayer, or any prayer at all. Leave the religion in the churches. I'm a 50-stater, and always appreciate the marathons that remain god-neutral. But those are pretty small concerns. This was a great marathon in a great piece of America.

Awesome

This was my ninth marathon... and maybe the best. It had great organization, and the organizers are always improving. I finished a 4:45 and there was still Hammer Gel during the race and beer at the end (a complaint from prior years). It's scenic with only a few small hills. The first 13 were in the woods with minor hills, running some on trails. The last 13 are in the direct sun, flat, and on asphalt... like so many other marathons I've done. This marathon is truly spectacular, and the area is amazing. I would absolutely recommend it.

beautiful, sunny, mostly flat, friendly

If I were only doing one marathon and not concerned about a PR, I would do this. The packed dunes and bridge were a challenge, but otherwise flat. It was so friendly, and well staffed; the weather was a little warm because there was no cloud cover.

Outstanding OBX!

Great course! First 10K were on roads along the water, and through residential areas where lots of people had come out of their homes to cheer! Miles 9-13 were the best, through the gorgeous and lightly rolling trails. Even the stretches of highway were manageable - flat, and only lasting about a mile at a time before we were taken to more beaches and estates. But watch out for the killer bridge at mile 23 - everyone was walking that thing, but it was worth it to see the water glistening on both sides, and we were still making better time than the cars! Beautiful and majestic place to run overall! More aid stations might be a good idea for water, but there was tons of energy gel, and the stations out there were quite fun, with enthusiastic people and lots of pirates! This was also the best race I have seen in terms of medical support - the BioFreeze, Tylenol, and sunscreen were very helpful! Pre-race was easy to get to, and post-race was amazing, with such friendly people and a festive atmosphere! Got a visor and cool towel, plus delicious and plentiful food, music, and revelry! A must-do!

Wow - terrific comeback race

This is a super marathon. It was a comeback race for me - my first marathon in 11 long years. The shirt and medal were very good, and the expo had more bargains than the NY expo. Also had surprisingly good soup. The course starts in a nice wooded area, and the spectators are great with your name on your race number they often call out your name. Running along the highway is not the best but is well patrolled. There is a bridge at around 22 miles, which is kind of cruel, but I knew about it, and tried to use it as a mental boost. There were plenty of well-staffed water stops, and they even had gel give-aways. The pasta party was ok but nothing outstanding. There even a part were you run on a woody trail. The finish is in a nice town. The food at the end is nothing special - cut-up peanut butter sandwiches, bagels and fruit. They should have a voucher for the lunch places in town, but since they don't, I would bring some money. The best place to park is by the high school and take the shuttle to the start. After the race the shuttle are over burdened. I shuffled back to the high school. Overall, a terrific experience. I would add porta-potties at the high school. And try to upgrade food at the end. There was a guy following me on the bridge whispering, "I'm using you," and he almost clipped my shoe. I let this jerk pass. Still, 99 percent of the runners were great. In my 11-year absence, a lot of changes have taken place: more female runners (good), chip timing (good), gels (good), and iPods (not so good). Anyway, it's a very good race, and I would recommend it.

Great race! More challenging than I expected!

The expo, and the volunteers before, during, and after this race were awesome. It's better set-up than bigger venues. The course was fast, except for the hilly multi-terrain trail run for three miles! That took a lot out of me, but once I hit the pavement again, I got the life back. I wasn't prepared for the mulch and rocks! Miles 22-26 went fast for me, and there was tons of fan support the last mile, which made me forget about my legs hurting... great experience. Will be back to take that trail on again.

Outstanding marathon - full package

This is an excellent marathon all the way around. I strongly recommend it. In the other marathons I have run, there always seems to be one area that could have been stronger, but this one is the full package. For starters, the organization of this race is exceptional. The expo was well run; there were no issues with getting my race packet, and even though this was not a huge marathon, there were plenty of booths with merchandise, services, etc. to make it interesting, but not overwhelming. The organization and planning that went into the race course made it memorable - the trivia fact signs along the way, the placement of the water/Gatorade stations, and the course markers were all excellent, and well thought through. The course was spectacular - much of it on coastal view roads, the trail miles a great diversion from the road. The weather could not have been better - warm enough to not need gloves, but not hot enough to be concerned about heat issues. Terrific support from the spectators, and the volunteers were wonderful. Finish line food could have been better (unwrapped PB sandwiches with sweaty runners reaching in grossed me out, but I was a bit queasy post-race to begin with, plus the free beer helped me forget about food). Thanks to all that made this event so fantastic - great job!

Great small-town race

Overall, I think the entire community and all the volunteers did a great job. The event (expo, technical race shirts, shuttles, pre-race bathrooms, gear check, mile markers, water stations, Hammer Gels) were all well organized. And the finish in Manteo was excellent! Very charming town. I have two negative comments, and only one can be controlled by the organizers. 1. Miles 10-13 were on dirt trail with rolling hills. It was challenging to get footing at times on the exposed roots, rocks, sand, and pine needles. Very difficult running surface for a road race. A half-mile on this would be okay, but not over three miles in a row. 2. There was a ridiculous headwind for almost the entire second half. Nothing can be done by the organizers for this factor, so it's just a risk when running this race. Since it's a point-to-point race, the wind can either be a major bonus (tailwind) or major negative (headwind). Depends on what Mother Nature has in store. Even with the two negatives mentioned here, I thought the race was a lot of fun, and I would run it again. It's a great, small-town race that is well organized and has lots of support from the local community.

great organization, course and town event

Great first half, mostly through woods and neighborhoods with supportive fans; the race seems like the weekend community event for the whole area. The second half of the race is largely under the sun, with a lot of road running, and with a bridge and hill at mile 23 that was a challenge. There's a big street party at the end, and it's well organized. The cheap waterfront rooms for the weekend are a plus.

Glorious. Paved my way to Boston!

I have recommended this race to all of my running peeps. It was my breezeway to Boston '09! The town embraces the runners/event, the expo was seamless, the route was an absolute delight; the funky wooded trail run put the "giddy" into my giddyup, the spectators were draped in pirate spirit, and the town erupts as you crush the turn into the small festive village!! Not a single negative comment to be found here.... ;-)

Great Course, Great Place, Great People

I drove down from Canada to run the inaugural OBX in 2006 and then again in 2008. Had a PB in 2008. Very scenic, with the Wright Brothers Monument, sand dunes and all of that! Well organized, laid back and the bridge at the end is a hoot! Spent a week looking at seashells on the beach on Ocracoke Island afterward. Really nice place. Everyone should run this one - it's fun!!!

Upbeat Marathon... with a Party at the Finish!

This run is worth doing. Plan to enjoy the run. Unless you are a trail runner, covering about 4 miles on hard, sand trails will slow you down. The first half of the route is under trees, but for the second half you're at the mercy of the sun. The multicolored finisher medal is a nice touch. I would recommend this race to anyone. Well done!

Great Spectators and Fan Support.

I was hoping to PR on this course but was not prepared for the trail run through the sand, pinestraw, and logs. Those 3 miles were a character builder. The trail won, I was pretty defeated after that and just tried to survive the last half of the run. But, if it was easy, everyone would be doing it! I hope to come back next year (and be prepared). The spectators were great, especially the pirates on the course. I was able to get some gel midway and I thought the Gatorade was sufficient. The post-race area was great. The shuttles to the parking areas ran smoothly. My favorite part really was the Fun Run festival for the kids. It is a special sight to see kids who enjoy running.

Great marathon, best PR ever!!!

I enjoyed this marathon. I love the Outer Banks, and this made it even more enjoyable. I read the negativity associated with the 2008 race, and frankly if you have to complain because there are no tongs in the serving trays, maybe you should run somewhere else. I also thought the water, Gatorade, and gel stations were adequate. I came in around 4 hours and the volunteers actually opened your water for you, and took your ankle band off for you. What more could you ask for? Whiners need to stop whining and appreciate what was given to them. There was plenty of food and drink as well. I think the volunteers and race committee did a great job. The town welcomed the runners with open arms and were very kind. This race is a must-do again. I appreciated all efforts associated with this race. Thank you for organizing a well thought-out race!

Nice course, but not for PR or BQ

First of all, the organizers did a wonderful job. Packet pick-up was easy and well organized. Like many others have commented, the course will fool you. If you think you're here for a PR or BQ, you may have chosen the wrong "flat" course. The 3-mile run on the sand road will slow you down and the thin trail through the woods prevents passing. The woods trail also has quite a few ups and downs. The weather was great, but the sun got a little hot during the second half. Maybe it was just me, but didn't the water stops seem to be a little far apart, especially right before the bridge? All in all, though, it's a nice marathon that I'd repeat... I'm still wondering, though, what's the correct spelling of "AAAARRRRGGH!?" Check the back of your race shirts. Hope they got a discount for that.

Good time, a little room to improve

Overall, the OBX Marathon was an enjoyable event. The expo was small but well organized, though I heard that they ran out of give-aways. Getting to the start was very easy and did not require waiting hours at the start. The first half of the course was more interesting than the second, and the crowd support the best there too; overall, the crowd support and volunteers were great - especially for a smaller marathon. The only really disappointments were that they advertised several gel stations, and by the time my husband and I came through, there were none to be found. There was also no food handed out on the course, unless I missed that too. The half-marathon started prior to the full, and maybe all of them taking gels was not accounted for and running 26.2 requires gel a little more. Also, following the race, they ran out of beer. Again, not sure if they gave it all away to the half-marathoners, and for that they did not account for the later marathoners. I came in at the 5-hour mark, so felt there should be a least a beer left for me, especially since the course is open for 7 hours. Maybe they should manage the handout of beer to ensure that there is enough for everyone.

Shhh, if the word gets out, it'll get too big

You can't please all of the people all of the time, but this race pleases me every time and it just gets better. When you drive onto the Outer Banks (OBX), you start seeing welcome runners signs on all of the message boards. The OBX really support this race. The race directors make minor changes every year that show they listen. I think the wife has already signed us up for next year. The shuttle bus drivers are awesome!! If you don't stop at Stack 'em High for breakfast and a debrief Monday morning after the race, you should!! This can be a fast course, but it's too pretty to rush through. Let the whiners go somewhere else; keep it small and friendly.

Great First 13 Miles, Last 13 Need Improvement

Upsides: - Small, well-organized race, with easy race pick-up and easy drop-off (I got to the start with only 3 minutes to spare - no problem!). - Really lovely and diverse first 13 miles - wooded roads with turning leaves, views of the water, a trail run. - Surprisingly strong local supporters out and cheering during the 1st 13 miles, and there were even supporters on the wooded trail. - Great teams providing water, etc. throughout. - Good weather; cool, not too windy. Downsides: - Last 13 miles have large segments on a four-lane road, with traffic - not the most scenic course! - Last 13 miles are largely un-sheltered, so lots of sun and exposure to any other elements - By the time the slower marathoners got to the last half, the crowd support was virtually non-existent - in one neighborhood, people were playing golf, cutting the lawn, etc. (can't say I blame them!).

I'll be back

For a first-timer, this was the way to go. The experience was incredible and fans make the trip to the Outer Banks worth it. Because this was my first marathon, I wasn't sure what to expect and would recommend this "smaller" marathon for anyone looking for their first time. The course was terrific - especially the first half - but the long stretches along the highway in the second half were a bit boring. Putting a bridge at mile 22 is a bit diabolical, but the fun in Manteo makes it worthwhile. Overall, I couldn't have been more pleased and am already making plans to return for 2009. I hope as word spreads of the OBX that this marathon doesn't lose its small-town feel or flavor - the world needs a few Marine Corps, Bostons, and NYCs, but the smaller ones are ideal for those who don't like the huge crowds.

Very scenic, well organized marathon!

This was my 17th marathon and it was by far the most scenic. I was a little nervous about running it since it was only in its 4th year and some of the comments were "iffy." So many people talked about the "huge" hill on the bridge at mile 22. Yes, it's a hill, but it is not as bad as everyone made it out to be. The course is so beautiful, especially the first 1/2. Yes, you go on the highway, but it's not bad at all because you turn back into cool neighborhoods, and pass giant sand dunes and so many beautiful houses. The 3 miles in the woods were nice, but I wasn't a big fan of the last .5 miles on the "mulch." It had small, rolling hills and the footing was sort of difficult, but it's only a 1/2-mile or so and the PLUS side is that your body gets a break from the pavement pounding the entire time you are in the woods, so it's a GOOD thing. It really is a beautiful, well organized race. There weren't a ton of spectators, BUT the people that were out there were so nice and the volunteers in pirate costumes were awesome. I would do this marathon again in a heartbeat and totally recommend it to anyone thinking of a North Carolina marathon. It is small but that is what makes it special. Really a great marathon overall. It is a point-to-point race and we found staying near the halfway point was really nice You can drive most of the course to check it out before the race and get an idea where you will be running. My husband found it very easy to navigate the course and was able to stop and see me 5 times while I was running!

Beautiful Course, Fun Race

This was my first time in the Outer Banks and I really thought the area and the course was beautiful. The weather was great... sunny, no wind, and highs in the low 60s. Great day for a race. I had heard that the course was flat, and I came trained and ready to qualify for Boston. Unfortunately, it didn't happen. There were probably only about 2,000 people total in the full marathon. Without the crowds to hold me back, I went out too fast and wasn't mentally prepared for the 4 miles on trails (dirt, mulch, pine), up and down hills through the woods (from miles 10-13). In retrospect, maybe the woods weren't that hard, but I wasn't expecting it, so I mentally let it get to me. When I hit the halfway point, I was tired. Thankfully, the rest of the course was flat, but the bridge into Manteo from miles 22-24 is a challenge. I didn't qualify but I did have a good time overall. The race takes you through some beautiful neighborhoods and through scenic woods. This is not a race with tons of spectators (I've run Chicago, Marine Corp., and Philly in the past), but the ones that do show up really are supportive! The festival in Manteo after the race was great. Packet pick-up was easy and so was the bag check before and after the race. There were absolutely no problems with race organization. My fiance was able to easily drive along the course and watch me at several points. The t-shirt was okay - long-sleeve cotton. The medal was nice. My one small complaint was that they didn't always have Gatorade at every water stop. I trained drinking Gatorade and my stomach got a little upset during the race from switching between water and Gatorade. It was a warm day and the sun was quite hot. I would have preferred consistently to drink Gatorade at every stop. Also, I would have liked a later race start. I just struggle with any race that begins before 8 a.m. (The half started at 7 a.m. and the full started at 7:20.) Overall, good race. I would do it again.

Need Improvement

OBX has many good features but needs improvement to compare to other mid-sized, point-to-point marathons such as Steamtown. The volunteers at packet pick-up didn't know who to talk to when an issue arose. On my Garmin, the course was 26.38 miles and I tried to run tangents! Also, the half-marathon walkers were tough to dodge the last 10K. It's not a fast course with all the turns, the X-C 3 miles in the middle and the potential for a windy day. The course volunteers were great.

Awesome Race!!

This was my very first marathon and I couldn't have picked a better spot. Of course, "Mother Nature" delivered with some spectacular weather!! Great views, mostly flat course, and my family appeared at several spots along the way to join great local support! The bridge at mile 23 was intimidating to approach, but not so bad. My only (minor) disappointment was that the t-shirt was a cotton shirt. Also, if you are only staying one or two nights, I would suggest booking hotel space early, as they filled quick and most of the vacation rental homes required a minimum three-night stay.

Really Nice!

Overall, this was a really fun marathon. The course for the first 13-14 miles was super! Flat, winding through neat neighborhoods with TONS of supportive fans... everyone in the Outer Banks must have turned out! I loved the shirt... in my mind, a marathon shirt must be a long-sleeved, cotton shirt. I can by a tech shirt if I need one. My only complaint was that they promised gels, but by the time I got there, they were totally out AT EVERY AID STATION. Guess I should have carried my own! In spite of that problem, I'll return. The Outer Banks is a great spot to visit and the marathon was very enjoyable.

Beautiful... flat... and great after party!

This marathon definitely ranks near the top of my list! The weather was perfect, the scenery was amazing, and the course was perfect to set a PR. Plus local organizations were at every corner cheering and the after party was a blast. Great band, and there were plenty of docks to hang out on and have a drink. Plus, I loved the pirate theme!

Great job in every way!!!

I came down from Brooklyn, New York to run OBX, and it was worth the trip! The course was awesome: mostly flat, really scenic and full of local supporters who really defined the race. The people in the this town totally ruled!! I just can't say enough about the first-class nature of this race. I came down trying to qualify for Boston - missed by 5 minutes - yet value my trip to this marathon to the max. I will be recommending this race to everyone in the NYC metro area. I will absolutely be back in '09.... Thanks to everyone there.

One of the best of my 17 marathons

The course was very beautiful for the first 13 miles. The bridge, at mile 21, was a major challenge, but the view from the top was wonderful. It was great to look back many miles and see where you had been. The crowd support was great. Overall it was an excellent experience. OBX is a well organized and well run event. The weather on November 9, 2008 was heavenly.

The OBX Marathon was incredible...

This was my first half marathon and I had an incredible time!! What a beautiful place to run. The weather was perfect. There was plenty of water/Gatorade/gels available. Some music here and there that kept the excitement up at the beginning. Locals were EXTREMELY supportive!! I could not have dreamed of a better place to be last weekend! Will definitely do more half's and I'm already planning to be at the 2009 OBX!!

I can't go 5 stars, but close.

What a great part of the state and country to visit, and why not run a marathon there while you're at it? The marathon's route lets you see a good portion of what the Outer Banks is all about: The Wright Brother's Memorial, the biggest sand dune on the east coast (which you don't have to run on, thank you very much), the beautiful summer homes and rentals in the area, and the historical part at the end of the race. Some points that I thought could have been thought through a little more were: The number of runners registered did not match the number of post-race goodies. 1. The damp towels available to the runners as they crossed the finish line was a nice touch, but they ran out just as I came across the finish. (My time was 4:23.) 2. The beer at the finish is always a nice treat, but is 4 beers per person really necessary? My wife who came in at 5:45 did not get any, and many others before her. 3. The peanut butter sandwiches were all ready made and cut into nice quarter sections, but there were no napkins or tongs or other sanitary method of picking up any of the items (also apple slices, and bananas) from the box. This race had a good course, great support with shuttles everywhere, and good weather. And you could soak your legs in the water at the end. Now, they just need to work on the post-race party. This was my 42 state marathon.

Great first 13 miles; second 13 still need work

Upsides: - Small race size made access to race start and packet pick-up easy and hassle-free - no waiting in long lines or standing around for an hour or more waiting for the race to start. In fact, I showed up only 2-3 minutes before the race and had no problem getting out and going at the appointed start time. - The first half is great - with pretty and varied scenery, friendly residents cheering you on and several sponsors along the way with music and extra cheers. - Weather was excellent. - Volunteers friendly. - Water and bathrooms were sufficient. Downsides: - All but four miles or so of the second half are on an open four-lane highway with a fair amount of traffic, including the concrete bridge, where traffic noise is amplified. - The half-marathon started at the same time as the marathon at mile 13 of the marathon course - thus, the fan support was limited during the last half. I can't say I blame them; who would want to stand in their yards for three to four hours waiting for those last 200-300 runners?! - Cotton T-shirts - 'nuf said! This was my first marathon, so I can't say how it compares to other courses. The local group was enthusiastic, and I appreciate the work they did to make this a fun and worthwhile experience.

Marathon Feedback

This was my first OBX Marathon, and I believe it is well worth the trip. Everything was well organized and there were plenty of porta-potties at the start. They even had food and water before the race. Out on the course, everyone one was dressed in the pirate theme. I found this to be the most interesting, as I ran from one community to the next. To the course...: There were a couple of neighborhoods where the road is split by a huge median in the center. It was hard to tell on which side of the median to run. Maybe next year, they could add a few arrows on the road. The trail section wasn't that bad. The dirt road section was well compacted and the little rolling hills actually felt good to my legs. The true trail section (wood chip section) was okay. When you first turn on the chip part there is a nice little hill. Once past it, the rest was not that bad. You should just expect to lose some time here. As for the bridge, well what I can I say? I cracked here. The bridge may only be 35' tall, but at 23 miles, it felt like Everest. :) But once over it, the run into Manteo was flat and great. I hope to have this race on my schedule for next year.

First half, awesome; second half, awful

The organization of the OBX Marathon was exceptional. It must be a nightmare to create a point-to-point marathon (and half), with shuttling, parking, and spectator issues. But everything ran beautifully. And the OBX was so incredibly welcoming to runners. It was really funny to see the whole OBX taken over by runners for the weekend. (And it was REALLY funny to see the whole town hobbling around the day after the marathon.) As for the race itself, it was really more like 2 distinct half marathons. The first half was incredible. We started in a wooded neighborhood, then hit some bike trails along the sound, then by the Wright Brothers Memorial, then onto the dirt road. The dirt road was my favorite part of the entire race. Every time I got a little bored, we'd hit some other cool feature. It was very fun. Unfortunately, the second half was really bad. The course pretty much follows the main route through the OBX, with one lane closed off to traffic. It was brutally hot, with zero shade and not much fan support, and I was sucking down exhaust fumes the whole way. I saw so many people cramping up. If you look at the results, almost everyone's split time for the last 10K was about 1/3 slower than the rest of their pace. They were pretty miserable running conditions. (I felt especially bad for the half-marathoners, as this was all they got.) Overall, I enjoyed the OBX Marathon, but was disappointed by the second half of the course. Yes, it is flat, but this course is NOT as easy as you would think. And I heard that from many runners. But hey, at least I got to hang out on the OBX for a few days.

good and improving marathon

Two years ago I ran the inaugural OBX Marathon and had a great experience. This year was better than the first. The course changed slightly, but is still a really good course - especially the first half. The mile markers were easier to see and made keeping my mile splits easy. Crowd support was super. Water/Gatorade/gel stations were well placed and I had no problems getting what I needed. The parking situation and the shuttle buses are vastly improved from the first. The medal is my favorite ever. My two cons: race shirt was not a tech shirt like I expected; and more port-a-potties needed at the start. Overall, a super experience.

Well-executed, pretty course, excellent event

This marathon was extremely well executed. Their information on the web was thorough. The expo was about average. The spectators were sparse at places, but they were generally enthusiastic and helpful. The race used corrals with wave starts and chip timing. There was ample water, Gatorade, gel, and medical stations along the course, and plenty of porta-potties. The mile markers were generally visible (but I missed one). My one suggestion would be for the organizers to publish a course profile with their maps. This is NOT a flat course. There are a variety of running surfaces: tarmac, concrete, dirt roads both packed and somewhat loose, and a shady trail section with wood chips. There are some short but steep uphills (with grades that would I guess are in the 5-10% range) that definitely slowed me down.

Tremendous experience

The OBX Marathon takes advantage of its landscape, running through nice neighborhoods, along the water, through 3 miles of forest (on a dirt trail - memories of high school cross-country) and over the final bridge into Manteo. The weather was perfect - maybe too perfect, as we ran into the sun for much of the race. The volunteers and spectators all came out; I could tell that the people really treat the marathon as a major community event.

Beautiful and unique marathon

I should have posted my comments a long time ago, but figured I would now, if anyone still hasn't decided whether to register for 2008. All I can say is "just do it" and you won't be disappointed. I traveled to OBX with my husband and two daughters. We rented a beautiful home right on the inter-coastal waterway, and to my surprise, the course went right by our place. Package pick-up was very organized and we were able to drive the course the same day with no traffic problems. There was a Fun Run for all the day before the race, with lots of activities for the kids to enjoy. Race-day weather was ideal and the course was beautiful. There was so much to see. The breathtaking views of the inter-coastal, the Nags Head Woods Preserve, running by the Wright Memorial and the largest sand dune and finishing up in Manteo Village were just a few of the highlights. My family was able to cheer me on at seven different spots along the course, which definitely helped me. The amazing sights along the course and the support of my family helped me PR by 10 minutes. I usually don't drink beer after the race, but it was free and I felt great. If you have the time, I recommend staying and spending some time in OBX. We arrived Saturday before the race and stayed one week. You can get a beautiful place and not spend a lot of money, since it is the off-season. The local YMCA offers free visits for anyone participating in the marathon, so the kids got to go swimming every day at the Y. We also got to visit the Wright Memorial and enjoy Jockey Ridge National Park and not have to deal with the crowds. We walked on the beach almost every day and the kids even went in the water. I am unable to participate this year due to another commitment, but I will definitely be back in 2009.

They fixed the problems!!

I ran the 1/2 marathon for the 2nd time and I was so happy to see they fixed the race problems. Shuttles were great and so was parking. The water stops were all well manned and friendly. Only negatives: the finish was hard for spectators to get to, so no family; and I wish the expo was bigger, but it's not bad.

Great Marathon!

OBX is a great course - well organized and well executed. Volunteers - shuttle drivers, water stop aides, police, post-race workers, etc. - were top-notch and on par with larger marathons. No massive throngs of spectators - remember this is the Outer Banks in November - but the locals who came out were awesome! I'll definitely consider running this one again.

A Marathon with Adventure

The entire Outer Banks community made the OBX Marathon a success. Given this was my first full marathon to run, I have nothing to compare it to. The previous positive comments summarize my opinions just as well. I found the trails in the woods to be most challenging. The bridge was not as bad as I had expected. What made this so special was the outpouring of cheering and support from the locals who lined the course. It was a party from start to finish.

scenic course, good organization, post-race party

Beautiful course with good organization. I ran both years, and enjoyed both times, though weather was much nicer second time around! I like the trails and hills; they break up the monotony of roads. The small neighborhoods through miles 15-19 were boring: big mansions with no fans. The finish line was also disappointing, and this race lets winners "double-dip," so the elite runners win all the bragged-about cash awards. Still, this is a scenic marathon that will continue to improve.

I have now run this race twice and I am sold!! The organizers did a great job making improvements from last year and have created an exceptional race. The course, aid stations, shuttle system, finish area, and spectators are number one. I will continue to run this race every year; what a great, small race with a large feel - thanks to the local residents and spectators who have really embraced this weekend. This is the way to go!

I have run many of the larger marathons and have to say that this is as stress-free as it gets. From accommodations to packet pick-up, everything went smoothly again this year (very important for Boston qualifiers). The bridge (climb) at mile 23 is a challenge, but hey, that's what marathon running is all about. The hospitality and small-town feel makes OBX a must-run.

Great race experience and near-perfect weather

My husband and I enjoyed this race, and relaxing on the beach the day after wasn't half bad, either. The race organizers did well, and the community support was outstanding. I lost count of how many people thanked us for coming to run, and brought music, cheering, and extra food and water to the course. Race pickup and loot: very smooth packet pickup. The medal is cute, but I was especially happy that the women's shirt was a women's sized technical-cloth tank top. I already have a collection of too-big cotton Ts, so this was a nice surprise. Shuttle and start: there was only one from Manteo at 5:45, and I got cold waiting an hour at the start afterwards because there wasn't much shelter there. However, I should have checked the weather and brought a few more extra layers for waiting around in, and the shuttle was convenient and spared us considerable hassle. The start was a wave start, and with 900-odd runners, there was no congestion, and not much waiting at the porta potties or gear check beforehand. Route: interesting and varied route with a tailwind much of the way. A mile of the route was too spongy for my taste, but that was just one mile, and the other hilly wood portions were on a great dirt road (the same sort of thing I mostly train on, so it gave my legs a break from the asphalt). I didn't like as much the straight boring portions along the highway: they seemed very long, especially the bit just before the bridge, LOL. The bridge itself was ok...it's not as bad as it looks from afar, and by mile 22, it's just slower, not any more painful. ;) I would say that the course is mostly fast...there's just the bridge and the spongy mile in the woodsthe other hilly portions weren't bad at all. I was 10 minutes too slow for the hoped-for BQ, but most of that was due to starting out too fast. Even despite being cold, and despite trying to establish a conservative pace, letting people pass me, etc, I found the initial flat (slightly downhill?) terrain, tailwind, and crowd support rather too inspiring. It was fun, though, and not too horrendous paying for it later, and it's the sort of thing that a more experienced marathoner would avoid. Someone else mentioned the mile markersno clocks! I liked that too. I wear a stopwatch that I can look at if I want to. Water stations and portapotties: no waits, no complaints. The volunteers were excellent. Post-race area/party: best one I've been to so far. six beers and a great crowd and a bunch of friendly volunteers helping runners take off timing chips, handing out medals, foil blankets, beer, etc....it was very nice to have such personal attention after running 26.2 miles. I wasn't hungry, so didn't pay heed to whatever food they had. The post-race party had a nice lawn to stretch out on during the awards ceremony. My husband wisely booked accommodations in downtown Manteo, so it was a short walk back to our quarters. At any rate, it was a great race experience, thanks to the race organizers, superb volunteers and locals. Thanks!!

Hurrah, OBX!

The absolute best race - we all LOVED the spectators, and the incredibly friendly atmosphere! The course was absolutely GREAT, the air is the best you can breathe (unlike in some other races), and I got my absolute PR here - probably from the adrenaline generated by all the cheering! I personally love the Outer Banks/waves for kiteboarding, and I was delighted to enjoy that part of them. Hurrah, OBX, and thank you all - I will be back for years to come!

Everything was top-notch! The wave start helped make the beginning smooth, the community spectators went all out decorating the course, the course was well marked with plenty of volunteers keeping you on course, there were plentiful well-stocked aid and medical stations, and there were plenty of friendly, knowledgeable volunteers.... There are just so many positive things to say: a community that really welcomes the runners, a shuttle bus system that runs flawlessly, a festive expo, and a truly amazing first 13 miles - beautiful, varied, and without the exhaust of a single passing car! If you want to treat yourself, do this marathon!

Great event!

Course was great. Ran through neighborhoods with good crowds sheltered from the wind for first 10 miles. Miles 10-13 take you on a packed dirt road and a short mulch trail; this section has gently rolling hills. Miles 13-21 take you back out in the open, mostly on main road. Miles 21-24 are across several bridges, including one high-rise at 23. The finish takes you into town of Manteo. It was a little challenging for spectators to get from mile 22 to the finish; limited roads forced spectators to go a long way to finish area (about 30 minutes), where there was limited parking. Helps to bring along a driver for your fans! Aside from that, it is a great destination, and the people were awesome. I highly recommend this one if you want to run a good time and have a good time!

Great Marathon

Very friendly people. My wife and I ate pancakes for my carb loading and met some of the people that worked at Stack'em High Pancake House. One of the gentlemen asked my name and said he would remember for the next day at Mile 12. Sure enough, he remembered my name and cheered like a wild man! The trails and bridge were tough but that's what it's all about.

Kudos to the race officials, volunteers, and crowd

This was a great marathon all the way around, highly recommended. I can't believe this is only the second year, some of the larger races could learn a few things from you guys. The crowd support was wonderful, expo had everything you could want and more, volunteers were the best, plenty of aid stations, water, gel, and of course free beer at the end will always bring runners.

Good Job OBX; I highly recommend this marathon

Thanks Outer Banks residents and businesses for hosting a very good marathon. I really enjoyed the course and the community support. For anyone considering this marathon for next year, I encourage you to sign up and do it. The course is very scenic, especially the first half which winds through secluded neighborhoods, around the Wright Brothers' Memorial, and through Nags Head Woods. The volunteers and spectators were very supportive and encouraging. I found the course to be very fast. It is relatively flat with two exceptions: the trail through Nags Head wood was unexpectedly hilly, and I had my slowest mile split there; and the bridge at mile 23. The weather was almost ideal: upper 40's, lower 50's with a good tail wind out of the north. I set a personal best and Boston qualifier here. I look forward to returning in the future.

UNBELIEVABLE!!!

This was my 24th marathon/20th state and favorite so far. The varied course and the perfect amount of 'corner turning'/change of venue was what made the race great....running through Kitty Hawk village and the area along the water was calming, circling the Wright Brothers' monument was awe-inspiring, the woods were great, the bridge was beautiful...the spectators were so friendly and helpful. The kites/parasails at the finish were a great thing to propel me forward and I loved seeing the kites from a distance and thus knowing EXACTLY where the finish was. I really felt the OBX community wanted us there and they seemed to know just the right things to say to inspire usso impressed with the people who came out (have never experienced that kind of warmth at a marathon!). The spectators were actually *thanking* the runners for coming to OBX and they really sounded like they meant it!!!! The medical tents were unique and wonderful. It was comforting knowing medical had a presence. All aid stations were strategically and perfectly placed; I never felt that awful desperate marathon feeling of not having my needs met. I utilized the vaseline and the power gel often. The occasional music was wonderful and I really, really enjoyed having the visual mile markers without someone barking out the mile times. We all have watches if we need to know our times. The EXPO was awesome (easy in and easy out). The shuttles ran very smoothly. The host hotel was great. Awesome, awesome job, OBX. The runners were really, really friendly and great to talk to. Congrats on your first, Peter Greeno!!!!

Great organization, volunteers and course.

It was a great race last year, but was even better with good weather this year. The technical shirts for the men were lacking - too small, especially around the neck - and I really think the winner of the full marathon should receive a purse that at least equals that for the winner of the half (not that it will ever affect me!).

First-rate in all respects

I had always wanted to visit the Outer Banks and this race provided both the opportunity for a visit at a less-crowded time of the year and a chance to run a marathon in North Carolina. In summary, this marathon exceeded my expectations in every respect. Reasons to run OBX include: 1) A very well-organized and professional race administrative infrastructure, which resulted in a very smooth and trouble-free experience from registration to packet pick-up through receipt of results. At least for me, everything was seamless, with no hiccups anywhere. 2) Great race shirt that I will wear frequently while training. 3) The best race timing vendor that I've ever encountered - results were posted on the website the day of the race and I received a personalized e-mail the day following summarizing my race time and providing detailed splits. 4) The course provided a bit of variety, some gorgeous scenery, some aviation history (you run right next to where the Wright Brothers took the first flight) and, at least this year, 20 miles of tailwind and perfect race temperatures. 5) The shuttle bus system worked great - which is very important for a point-to-point course like this. 6) Lots of portable toilets at the race start and along the course. 7) Bagels, bananas and Gatorade at the START - a nice touch. 8) TONS of volunteers who were genuinely helpful, pleasant and who seemed happy that we were there. And 9) Free beer at the end. ;-) There are so many reasons to visit the Outer Banks and the race is at a less-crowded time of the year. This provided less-costly accommodations while also minimizing traffic issues. The locals also seemed genuinely happy that we were there. I could not have had a more positive experience and I highly recommend this race.

A pleasant, smaller marathon

I was looking for a reasonably-sized marathon to run this year, and the Outer Banks Marathon fulfilled that goal quite nicely. The first ten miles of the course were my absolute favorite; beautiful scenery along the water, through tree-filled residential neighborhoods, and around the Wright Brothers Monument. You can't ask for much better scenery than this (and I ran in Florence, Italy last year) and I've got nothing but great things to say about miles 1-10. The infamous "through the woods and hills" portion (miles 11-13) was indeed a tiny bit challenging, but at the same time, perversely fun. It was very different from any sort of marathon I've run before, and I appreciated the challenge. There is about a mile stretch in there where the trail isn't more than two-people wide, but for a mid-pack, 4-hour marathoner, I had no problems with crowds or passing people. I must admit that I was less than thrilled with the second half of the course, but not because of the infamous bridge to Roanoke Island at mile 23 (which is visually pretty daunting, but thankfully not actually that long). My complaint was the long stretch of highway that composes a lot of the second half of the course. I'd love to see in the future the marathon get shifted off of the highway a bit more; as fun as it was to see all the businesses having changed their signs to reflect the marathon (the funeral parlor telling runners "the end is near" had me laughing a great deal), it did get old pretty fast. There aren't throngs of spectators like you'll get in New York, Marine Corps, or Chicago, but you know what? I liked the crowds at OBX much more. Everyone came out of their houses to cheer, they were warm and friendly, and lifted my spirits the whole way through. Hurrah for them! I'd definitely recommend this race to others who are looking for a smaller, more intimate race in a nice location.

Just OK

I didn't do it last year, so I can't comment on improvements made. A point to point race always creates problems, but everyone knew that coming into it. I was cold and not too happy about my performance. Would have liked to have gotten in my car and left. Instead had to find shuttle (no signs), wait for shuttle, figure out for myself which shuttle to take, and sit on bus for 45 minutes to get back. Instead of quick walk to car, took 90 minutes to get back. But again, I knew that could be a problem. Parts of course were scenic, parts were on a 5 lane road, but I didn't mind that. I wasn't out there to sightsee (though before & afterwards, there are great places to check out). There were 2-3 miles of hilly dirt/sand/mud roads and wood chip trails. I didn't mind, but not a PR course for that reason. Didn't mind bridge either, but be aware you have a pretty steep 90 second climb 23 miles into the race with a 2-3 minute gradual buildup. Don't think b/c it's on the coast it's an easy race. We lucked out on the 20 mph winds being at our backs most of the way, but there were sections of strong headwind & crosswind (bridge). Finish line was a little chaotic. I'm a 3:30 guy and more attention was being paid to 4:00 1/2 marathon walkers than marathoners. Lot of community support! Overall, I'd give it an OK rating, but know what you're getting into. Not blazing fast. Good place to take the family if you want to run a race and count it as a vacation.

Fantastic, I loved it. As good as any I've run.

I ran this two weeks after the Ridge to Bridge Marathon (another great race in NC) and ran with others who had just completed Marine Corps marathon. The level run with the tailwind helped me run about as quickly as I normally do. We all thought it was a great marathon. Everything was well organized, shuttles to the start from Wal Mart ran well as did the return shuttles after the race. The aid stations were more than adequate and well staffed by very enthusiastic volunteers. There were many supporters all along the course even on the trail portion. The course itself was beautiful, one of the best I've ever run. We passed through many attractive neighborhoods where the homeowners came out to cheer us along. Some have complained about the trail portion but I found it to be a joy to run. It added diversity to a great run and reminded me of the trail around the Duke University golf course. All of the volunteers were fantastic, they were energetic, helpful, understanding and all seemed to have a great sense of humor. I was concerned about the traffic congestion on Roanoke Island but it was not an issue when I finished. The wind was at our backs for all but about 1.5 miles. The Washington-Baum bridge provided a welcome break from the otherwise flat course. I thoroughly enjoyed this race and am planning on doing it again next year.

Great job OBX for a terrific race.

After reading some of the 2006 comments I wasn't quite sure what to expect from the 2007 marathon; but it was everything I have come to expect and hope for in a marathon. The course had varied scenery: the Wright Brothers memorial, Nags Head woods, beautiful views of the Sound, the bridge, etc. Nags Head woods was a very nice and unexpected twist in the course. Although it was hilly, I very much enjoyed the 'trail' experience. The OBX residents were more than hospitable. It seems like they actually understand what having a sense of community is all about while understanding that 'tourists' keep their economy going. The organization of the race was outstanding. Every town we ran through had it's own logo spray painted on the road along the entire course. Every mile marker was easily recognizable and the many turns were clearly marked with signs and volunteers directing the participants. The only 2 items that could be improved upon are the food at the end and the medal. These 2 things are very minor to me because they are not key motivating factors that influence my desire to run marathons; however, I have participated in 10k's that had a better spread of food than this. The medal was nice, just not very big. With all of that being said, the wristband for 6 beers at the end was more than generous, although I would have gladly exchanged 4 of the beers for a couple of slices of pizza! OBX-awesome job in only your second year. It is obvious you learned a lot from your 1st year and made the appropriate improvements! Thanks for a great race!

OBX Marathon - Scenic and Friendly

I ran the half and had a great time. I can't say enough about the volunteers and the people along the route - if you couldn't find food at the aid stations, you could always join one of the parties on the course. Unlike others, I found the bridge to be a nice change for my knees (plus the view was beautiful from the top). I didn't have to run in Nags Head Woods, but if you think there are hills there, try the half in Williamsburg - NH Woods has anthills compared to that race (it is a great race, too, by the way). Everyone involved in this race worked incredibly hard to make it a success and it shows. Yes, there are some small issues to work on, but I am sure that by November '07, the race organizers will have had a chat with Mother Nature about the rain. By the way, don't let the bad weather from last year scare you away - we could just as easily have a sunny warm day this year. Also, I loved the medal.

Beautiful course, great fans, good 1st try

My wife and I ran the half marathon. The whole morning was a great experience for us. We were on our shuttle and at the start without a hitch. We ran into dozens of people we knew, which added an unexpected bonus. All along the course, which took us through a wide range of places - like by Jockey's Ridge sand dune, through a golf course, over the Roanoke Sound and through the maritime village of Manteo - we were cheered on by what sometimes felt almost like more volunteers and supporters than runners. For about half the run the weather was beautiful, but then the rain started and we ran in a gully washer for about an hour. It was actually nice, except my shoes got heavy towards the end. I understand that the 2008 race ends in downtown Manteo, which will be a big improvement since it is connected to the location of the closing ceremony. We loved this run and will certainly do it again.

The idea is great; the execution baffles the brain

This is a great place for a race and in the future it should be one of the most sought-after experiences on this coast. There are just some things about island running that the organizer did not understand. First, we have prevailing SW winds, so any year, it is likely the runners will face a headwind from mile 1 to mile 22. And a stiff headwind of 20 mph is very common in Nov. - even 25. All that air comes right off a 30-mile open stretch of water; it blows cars off the road, let alone skinny runners. Point it in the other direction. The second thing is finishing ON Roanoke Island. That is crazy. It took 2 hours, due to the traffic and buses, just to get off Roanoke Island and back to the main island. Why not have a beach finish, as it is a beach marathon? I'd gladly run again but the thought of sitting in traffic, cramping up, smelling like a swamp for several hours after I finish just turns me off. The finish must have an exit strategy and there is only one road off RI. At least over at the beach there are a lot of ways to move around.

Good marathon... but a little suprising

I must say great job to the community for their support - there were tons of people during the first few miles while we were winding through the streets. That definitely got the marathon off to a great start, which was then dampened (literally) by the rain that started setting in, and then our discovery that the flat and fast course on a dirt-packed path was actually a very uneven, hilly, narrow trail. (Talk about a suprise - especially to this first-time marathoner, who lives on the VERY FLAT east coast of GA. I for one did not train for that.) And, of course, the bridge at the end didn't help. (In all fairness, we were warned about that.) Just be fair in the description of the course for future reference, with that stretch of trail in the beginning of the race. It made for an extremely long second half of the race since I didn't know I was training for a hilly portion of a trail run. Personally, I can't complain about the port-a-johns at the start (I was in line early enough, I guess). Also, we didn't have to suffer through the extremely long lines for bag pick-up or shuttle (I guess that's a bonus for being in the last half of the finishers). A lot of the traffic had started to thin out, so the wait for a shuttle wasn't bad. It was a little disappointing, however, to watch the shuttle drive right by my hotel and have to sit and wait to get all the way back to one of the community parking areas only to turn around and drive the same stretch of road back to the hotel. And for those who have commented (both good and bad) regarding the post-race food, consider yourselves lucky! I NEVER saw ANY FOOD at the end of the race - must have been long gone before I got there. I was very glad I had packed a few granola bars in my bag. Also, it was disappointing that everything was so scattered at the finish with the awards ceremony - I have no idea where it was or how I was supposed to get there, had no desire to go wandering around looking for it at that point, and basically the finish seemed like it was a few runners like myself and a bunch of volunteers who were looking forward to being able to get out of the rain. (Don't get me wrong; many thanks for their time - they were great!) But I was looking forward to being amongst other runners and their families to enjoy the fact that we had made it to the finish line! I'm sure there will be many changes for next year, and maybe I'll be back after I find some hills to train on so I can be better prepared!

Great Potential

Cons: I missed running with my buddies because I was in the porta-potty when the race started. I was in line for 25 minutes. Tough bridge late in the race. We caused a huge traffic jam for a long time. Running in the soft sand, twisting, steep up and down, narrow single track trail. It was taxing. Why did they keep it a secret? Medal, t-shirt and expo were a big disappointment. Pros: Enthusiastic spectators and volunteers. Cool poster. Lots of choices to stay at a reasonable price through AAA. Suggestions: Reverse the course so the bridge is at the beginning when we are fresh and not cramping up. Plus we won't block traffic because we will all be past it so early in the morning. Good for everyone. Jazz up the medal and shirt.

Awesome fans; surprising course

The fans were amazing! The weather ended up being very harsh - driving rain and strong winds - and the fans just stayed right out there and cheered us on. I was inspired! For an inaugural marathon, I thought it was very good. However, here are some points that might be taken into account: 1) Every race organizer should know that one can never have too many port-o-potties. Unfortunately, at the start the lines ended up what seemed to be 20-30 deep. I was worried about runners making it to the start line on time (yes, it was that bad). 2) I didn't know that we would be trail running on hills for miles 8-12 or so. That was not a fun surprise. 3) It was very tough to run fast to the finish line when you are trying to dodge huge mud puddles. 4) I don't know where the awards ceremony was, but it didn't seem to be anywhere close to the finish line. I think you had to take a shuttle to get there. 5) I was so excited to win my first age group award but I had to practically beg in e-mails for it since I missed the ceremony. They finally e-mailed us about a month after the race and told us to send a self-addressed, stamped package to receive the award(cost $0.96... they can't pick up the tab on that??). 6) Mile markers were sort of hard to find if you didn't know what to look for. I think the race logistics and planning will improve with time. I don't think I will be running it again though.

Great Volunteer Support But Needs Much Improvement

I was looking for a late fall marathon on the East Coast. Chose OBX because I heard the Outer Banks is a great place to visit and had a lot of unique sights (Wright Bros. Museum, Lost Colony). Had absolutely no trouble booking a hotel 2 months prior, but it was all downhill (pun intended) from there. The pros (+): 1) Volunteers. Absolutely great. Very positive and helpful. Without them, this race would have been a complete flop. Literally, there was a volunteer on every corner with a map or shuttle schedule! Even better considering the wind and rain for nearly the entire day of the race. 2) Scenery. Monuments, bridge and ocean provide nice scenery and backdrop. 3) Kids' Race and activites, t-shirt. Son loves the t-shirt. Design of kids' t-shirt was much nicer than the marathon. The kids' 1-mile race itself was somewhat disorganized but enjoyable. My kids (10 and 6) loved the rock-climb. Of note: I witnessed a volunteer that did not stop traffic on a somewhat busy road while kid was attemping to cross street during race. Car nearly hit the kid. Major cons(--): 1) Lack of access and shelter at the end of the race. After finishing in the driving rain, I saw several shivering, sick runners walking around appearing to be waiting for a shuttle. There were not enough tents. Nearby school was locked! 2) Could not get a shuttle at finish. You needed a shuttle to get to an off-site parking lot since little parking was available near finish. Shuttles were disorganized. Saw many instances where drivers were confused as to their route. 3) Access to the finish, post-race party, and start were limited and downright dangerous. Many cars were stuck in long lines unless you took a shuttle or were leaving in an ambulance, there was no access to finish. Post-race party was nearly impossible to get to with roads blocked off. Note: it was more than a short walk from the finish, which leads me to my next point: 4) The start, finish, expo, post-race party (four separate areas, none within walking distance of the other) could not have been placed in the most inaccessible, remote areas of the Outer Banks. THIS WAS VERY POORLY DESIGNED!!! The real irony here is the organizers want another 1000+ next year. The race course, finish, etc. looked like it was designed to handle a crowd of about 500. There were 2000+ runners. Minor cons (-): 5) Course: At many turns (especially early: miles 2-11) there was not enough room for more than three abreast. A lot of contact. Did not see anyone fall. Course opens up after trails. Several instances of dirt-to-concrete transition. Also of note: speed bumps present near the end of race (miles 24-25) pose a trip hazard, especially with tired legs. 6) Took nearly a month to get my age-group award, after about 10 emails and five phone calls to various directors (after being promised by the assistant director day of race, "we'll take care of it") and paying postage, I received my award. Unless you were an elite finisher, the directors didn't seem to care. 7) For a $75 entry fee: Goodie bag full of useless coupons to overpriced resturants, etc. The only thing of any value was the "udder" cream used to prevent chafing. Value hunters: Not a lot of bang for your buck. On a positive note, a portion of the fee went toward the Outer Banks Charities. 8) Need more porta-potties (and access) at the start. My advice: Go if you like the crowded feel of the megas, being at the beach in November, and want to visit someplace with a unique history to it; but in my opinion this race needs a major overhaul. Unless the directors focus on improving runner safety, organization, and convienence rather than attracting huge crowds, my family won't be back again.

ok for an inaugural marathon

The crowd was great and despite the rain, many people still came out to cheer the runners on. The course was quite fun, as we got to run through some of the neighborhoods and local attractions such as the Wright Brothers Museum. Running through the woods was nice but it was impossible to overtake people since it single lane for most of the 3-4 miles. That certainly slowed people down significantly. Things that need improvement: 1) Not enough variety of food at the finish. There weren't even bananas and there were only bagels and big pots of peanut butter, and some oranges. 2) The shirt has ended up being what I wear to clean my home, since it isn't a technical shirt and even the cotton is somewhat rough. Also, both half marathoners and marathoners got the same shirt. 3) Mile markers - the mile markers were confusing and there were not enough of them. 4) The finish at the track was not exactly a great idea. I was trying to sprint to finish but had to slow down because there were huge, muddy, slippery puddles.

Great Place to Visit and Run

Pros: Run through the forest was pleasant. Nice area with plenty of scenery. Residents were out cheering. Community was friendly. Plenty of water stops, although the rain made them less necessary. Cons: Wind and rain put a damper on the post-race festivities. I did not attend since I had no desire to stand outside in the cool rain. Short runs on uneven surfaces were a surprise (wood chips and sand). Run over the bridge was tough, especially at the end and with the wind in our faces, but nobody said it would be easy.

Bad weather. Great marathon!

A wonderful marathon!!!! It's amazing that this was the inaugural race. Everything was nearly perfect. The only things the race officials need to work on are more port-o-johns at the start, mile markers being more visible and having a few clocks throughout the course. Also, those hills back in Nags Head Woods go against the course being advertised as flat and fast. Like one person commented, they were a surprise and not a good one. And how about finishing on Ice Plant Island (where the awards ceremony was) rather than winding our way through the parking lot of the Manteo H.S. The expo was great for such a small marathon in its inaugural year. I was surprised to see all the running gear available. The course was scenic (the view at the top of the bridge is always pretty), well designed and fun (running by the W.Bros. Mem. was really cool). It was also quite challenging (the hills between miles 8-12 and the bridge). It's not exactly a p.r. course but a great course nonetheless. The spectators were real troopers for coming out in such bad weather to cheer us on. That was great!! All those involved in organizing this marathon (half-m. as well) deserve an A+! It truly was a wonderful, well organized race. I loved it and I look forward to running it next year.

Good race, but not as "flat and fast" as sold

Overall the race was pretty well organized. The spectators were great. I've only got 3 complaints: not enough porta-potties in general, no sports drink available during race, and the race had some sandy, rolling, hilly trails for 3-4 miles that were unexpected. The last is interesting, but not if you're told that the race is flat and fast by organizers and they never mention the sandy, hilly single track. Overall, I would not call it a "fast" race, as the overall times would indicate.

Good First Try; Great Place to Run

This was a good first try at a marathon. Organizers got it mostly right - just a few items need adjustment and correction. The course was a good one, with varied surfaces, and vistas. Distance markers were easy to see, even though they may not have been right on the mark. The expo was good. Information was adequate, though not complete. If one did not have a map and knowledge of the area, it was impossible to figure out where the pick-up points were. Also, great medical and police support. Things that need improvement: Need more porto-lets at the start. Waited in line for 15 minutes and had to start late at that. Have Gatorade or something of the sort at all water points. Water alone is not enough. GU at miles 6, 12, and 18. Better baggage check-in/pick-up. Larger numbers or use last name, and also use LARGE pint. Waited in line for 20 minutes to get bag. After-run food needs improvement. Peanut butter sandwich or a bagel with oranges are just not enough. A warming beverage or soup would be nice. The Outer Banks can get cold, especially after a rain. Plan on it being that way. Return shuttles. Have to do it better. Took almost two hours to get to the hotels and the start line. Long trip around Mantao. Other activies were useless, as they were too far away. Also, everything cost something and how many runners carry money? No cotton t-shirt. Keep working on the fine points. Great race.

OUTSTANDING RACE BUT SOME DISAPPOINTMENT

The OBX marathon course was one of the most interesting I have run (counted about six different surfaces). I found it to be very creative and it kept my interest throughout. I cannot say enough about the volunteers and the people of the Outer Banks for the support that they showed to the runners! Traffic control was outstanding and the bus to the start was right on time and very efficient. Five-star ratings for the course and even higher than five for the people who came out on a less-than-perfect day for a marathon. Now I would like to add my reason for disappointment. First off, there was NO paper registration and everything was done online. The processing fee for online registration was an OUTRAGEOUS $5.19 per entry! My 2nd reason for disappoinment was that my training partner was injured one week prior to the event and tried to seek a deferral or maybe even a reduced rate for next year. He was told it would be looked at by the committee and was NEVER contacted back. My final disappointment was about the awards. I was unable to attend the post-race awards ceremony and e-mailed OBX to see if the award would be mailed. The response was YES, but send a bubble envelope with the postage attached. I am wondering what the $65 entry and $5.19 processing fees were all about. It is not about the money but the principle of the matter! Great course, and nice folks, but if you register, stay healthy and book your hotel early.

Great half marathon!

Positives: -Liked the peanut butter sandwiches. -Fans were awesome - the best I've seen. Even the UPS guys honked as they took our belongings to the finish line. -Volunteers were great. -Excellent water supply. -Beautiful course. Would be nice to run along beach road instead of the bypass. Negatives: -Not enough food at the finish. -Suggest an assembly line at the food, everyone was packed under the tent to get out of the rain, making it difficult to get to the food. -Need to give out a runner's shirt instead of a cotton T. -Larger and more accurate mile markers. -Although I didn't use the UPS trucks, everyone seemed to be in line "C." Need a better system there - last-name alphabetical seems to work well in other runs.

Excellent Race!

This was a great race that had tremendous community support and fans along the route. Overall, a great experience. Course: Point-to-point, and very flat, except for the bridge at mile 22-23. The dirt road and trail section were unexpected (only three miles) but were a plus for those of us who like trail running. Very scenic, and would have been even better if not for the rain. Could improve on the last half mile as it snaked through a school parking lot, around school buildings, and finally to the track. Organization: For a first-time event, it was outstanding. Good police support and traffic control. They did need more port-a-potties at the start (about double would do). And I heard the shuttle was difficult and slow. A little light on the post-race munchies too. Spectators: The Outer Banks community really showed up for this one. The rain didn't stop anyone. Excellent!

Great job, OBX, you exceeded my expectations

Overall, a great course and race. My comments are consistent with others posted here. Positives: The spectators/volunteers were the best I have seen; the course was beautiful and never dull; the start was well-organized by min/mile pace; aid stations were plentiful (I just drink water so I don't share the complaints about insufficient sports drink). Negatives: There MUST be more port-o-potties at the start and in the first few miles of the course; I may have missed them, but the first john I saw was at mile 9; make the mile markers more visible, as they were easy to miss; it was confusing having some aid stations before/after mile markers (I would pass an aid station thinking it was at a mile post only to be disappointed when I saw a mile marker a minute or so down the road); while the trails would have been nice with advanced warning, they were a complete surprise (hilly and sandy in parts). I recommend this race; it had all the positive features of a well-established race and I am sure the small kinks will be worked out before next year.

Good Inaugural Event

A good first running of this marathon. Mostly well done, but some areas of improvement are needed, as one should expect with any first-time event. The Good: -Expo good for this size marathon -Most of the course flat and fairly interesting -Local residents were terrific in their support -Helpful volunteers -Nice medal -Finish area large enough to avoid overcrowding that occurs in many marathons Some improvement needed: -More porta-potties at start essential -Mile markers were not accurate, particularly near the bridge -Clocks at selected points on the course would be useful -Slippery surface to run on going from the streets to the high school track at the finish -Finish area food could have been more varied, such as including cookies, snack bars, etc. Many of us crave sugar at the finish! -The 3 miles in the woods was beautiful, but the surface needed packing down or other work to minimize the slippery, sandy conditions. The weather has horrible, but weather happens and no one can be held responsible for the torrential rain and high wind conditions. Just be aware that this can occur. All in all, I'd rate this as a well done marathon that has the potential to be an outstanding one with a few improvements. I recommend it.

Awesome spectators, great medals

Great first marathon. Good job!! Awesome spectators, and great medals at the finish line! I love my pale blue shirt, too. As a walker at the back of the pack, finding out that I was second in my 65-69 age group was great. The race director said they had closed up the awards program, but that she would mail it to me. Remarkable people - so friendly! Great job, race director and support people. Loved it.

Outstanding first effort.... Bravo to all!

I had not been to the OBX in 20 years and I didn't remember the beauty of the area.. .lots of big trees, a trail through a forest, bay-front roads, the Wright Monument, etc. I have done six marathons so far this year, and this was the BEST. The organization was outstanding; the volunteers were unbelievable to stand out in the rain trying to help; the expo was first-class - even the poster was inspirational. The shuttle to the start was fine, but the shuttle away from the finish needs work. Traffic was awful, and it took about and hour and a half to get back to the hotel area, mostly waiting on the shuttle bus to pick us up since it was delayed in traffic coming over to the finish. The rain was bad, but I've seen worse. I will definitely be back next year! Thanks to the organizers and to the community for all their hard work.

Great inaugural marathon for my first

I enjoyed the varied course - especially the Nags Heads Woods section. The crowd support was great, especially considering the rain, and all the residents were very friendly. The volunteers at the water station stops did a great job. I wished that they had Gatorade at every stop as I trained for that. The medal at the end is excellent. I look forward to returning.

Great Spectators!!

I had a wonderful time running the marathon. The spectators were spectacular. I have run big-city races and at times it felt like there were more spectators in OBX than some of the big cities. More port-a-johns needed at the start. I got there 35 mins before the start and never made it through the lines. The trails through the woods were unexpected, and I probably would have enjoyed them knowing ahead of time. The bridge wasn't as bad as I had expected which was a nice surprise. One suggestion: make the finish closer to the festival park. I went to watch the awards ceremony and the festival park was almost empty. I think the weather and distance from the finish made a lot of people shy away from the park. I thought the festival park was great and a fun place to relax and have a few beers. This is agreat marathon; I would do it again!

Overall, very impressive first race

The race and weekend were well organized with the exception of parking and shuttles at the finish. My husband paid for a shuttle pass as a non-runner, but we ended up walking back to the car (in one of the recommended shuttle lots in Manteo) since the lines were long and we couldn't find anything to indicate exactly where the shuttles were going. My only beef with the course was the part through Nags Head Woods - reading the online description and not being from the area, I didn't realize it would be a sandy, hilly, narrow stretch for what was I think about 3 miles. Just not what I expected. I can't say enough about all the local support in what was pretty ugly weather. The spectators were great and the volunteers were always smiling and supportive! Even with the minor glitches, the weekend was a wonderful experience.

Great race

Overall the weekend was a great time. I brought two other runners and they agreed that the race was nice. Here are my comments: Course: Nice and flat to start and plenty of crowd support. Beautiful scenery in the Wright Bros. area, the village at Nags Head and Pirate's Cove (awesome yachts!!). The trail section was a surprise and not a good one, as the pine needle section was too soft (maybe due to rain?) but the hard-packed dirt road was fine. The finish was nice as Manteo is a wonderful little town and the traffic was not hard to negotiate since we had a lane to ourselves. The people in the vehicles cheered and I did not see or hear of problems with traffic. The port-a-potty situation was funny because I got in and out in about 15 minutes but most people seemed to wait until almost start time. Organization: I felt this was wonderful. We had plenty of water, medical and volunteers everywhere. The mile markers were visible after realizing what they looked like. Though I had a watch on, I would have liked time at the 13- and 20-mile marks. Would have liked some fruit or cereal bar around mile 20. Only had one instance of a restaurant not being prepared. All the others I visited were wonderful. Spectators: The Outer Banks people were great. From the mile marker sponsors, the man in the hula outfit, the guy offering beer, and all the shouts of, "Welcome to the Outer Banks" that we heard from the people could not have been nicer. I will run this again and be better prepared for the trails and weather. The cold rain and wind brought me to some halts and I walked some, but I feel good about my first marathon.

Lovely people, Lovely race

My friend Deb and I are usually the caboose of the crowd and have seen the end of several marathons. The support was great!! The crowds were great!! The weather was wet but manageable. The views were breathtaking even for the cloudy day. I highly recommend this race. We have gone to enough marathons that we are recognizing the other walkers at the end. Glad to make more friends. See you at the next one.

GREAT RACE!!

Most scenic and beautiful courses!! AWESOME RACE. Race directors did a great job. I ran a PR. They have a gorgeous custom design award, with a lot of attention to details. GREAT JOB for the first-year race. I would put OBX on the list of MUST-DO marathons!! Not ready for 26.2? Do the 1/2! Thank you!!

A good experience

Well done event, especially for the first time. Course was interesting - I liked the point-to-point course, and the diversity of scenery and running surfaces, although that diversity made the course more difficult than the description led one to believe. Spectators and volunteers were very friendly and supportive, especially considering the weather. Need more porta-potties at the start and energy drink towards the end. Finish area could have had a bit more "energy." I'm very happy that I decided to run this marathon.

Great first marathon

This was my first marathon and this race has definitely made me want to run any upcoming marathons. Although the weather was a little off on the day of the race, the course was amazing, and I want to run this marathon again next year. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to start running.

Good course, but needs some tweaking

I'll keep it short. Great community support. Weather was bad but not impossible - a steady rain, but not too cold, with temps in the high 50's or low 60's. Course: good, varied terrain, some asphalt, some trails, some of the dreaded concrete. Covered a good representation of the Outer Banks. Generally flat and conducive to PR times. Liked the point-to-point. Expo: good, but forego the number lookup and have alphabetical race pickup. Shirt: cheap cotton, uninspired generic design with every sponsor under the sun. Did not like to be shown a great design that could be had for additional $15. Print a great shirt on technical fabric and the word will get out. Medals: fabulous! Beautiful. Probably my first or second favorite of all that I have. Shuttles: you've got to fix this. Two hours to get back to my race hotel. Better traffic control in Manteo needed. Otherwise, for the first year, I'd say this one is a success. Work out the tweaks and you'll have 4,000 marathoners and 3,000 half marathoners in three years.

Outstanding Inaugural Race!

The race organizers did a FANTASTIC job for an inaugural race! It was extremely well organized. PROS: 1) Communication to the local community was excellent. The residents and merchants all knew that a marathon was taking place and they were very Welcoming to the runners. Our hotel, the Comfort Inn, had shuttle schedules and the front desk personnel knew exactly where to direct people to get to the expo. 2) Shuttles to the start line and back from the finish line were prompt and efficient. 3) Course was well marked and the police support at the intersections was good. 4) Pre-race bananas, bagels and water were made available at the start area. 5) Medal is in the shape of a clamshell and has the year stamped on it. 6) The volunteers were WONDERFUL. They never abandoned the aid stations even though it was pouring rain for two hours. CONS: 1) Mile markers were not easily visible. They need to attach balloons to them so they can be seen from a distance. 2) The plus is they served Gatorade and not that nasty Ultima stuff. The bad side was it was FULL strength and only available at every other aid station. Aid stations were every two miles so you only got Gatorade every four miles. 3) Right before you approach the finish line, you had to run through a short section of the high school track, which was covered in mud! It was a mess! 4) This was not made clear in the race literature but approximately four miles of the race are off-road on a trail through the woods. It's not bad but it sure came as a surprise! If you need to cross NC off for one of your states, this is a great race to do! It can only get better!

Very Nice First Effort!

For an inaugural race in a small town(s), many more things were done right than wrong. Obviously the weather (rain and wind from the south) took its toll, but there were still a lot of intrepid spectators cheering in many locations. Course was very well marked, with lots of volunteers at (nearly) every turn to give directions. About 3 or 4 miles were on hard-packed dirt roads (with 1/2 mile after that consisting of a narrow woodchip trail - who knew you'd get some small rolling hills on a barrier island?). Great job organizing the starting corrals by mile paces. Nitpicks: Two or three stops (about six miles) with water only - no Gatorade. Several of the mile markers were not visible and/or did not coincide with aid stations. Hard to keep your mile splits. Finally, a late change in the location of the finish was NOT publicized very well, if at all. I had to ask about conflicting printed information at the expo - one volunteer knew the correct answer, one did not. But overall, an interesting, varied course. And the Outer Banks was very beautiful and hospitable. I'd recommend this for those looking for a smaller race in a very nice location.

Loved this race!

This was my second marathon, and wanted to do a smaller one (ran NYC for my first). I was a little nervous because it was their inaugural marathon, but you never would have known it. It was very well organized, lots of fluid stations, plenty of Gu for the taking and a beautiful, relatively flat course! Plus, i took over 30 minutes off my time. The spectators were great considering the fact that it was cold and raining. I highly recommend this race!

Despite the weather, it was great

I thought the race organizers did an outstanding job considering this was the first running of this marathon. The fans were great, despite the downpour of rain, and the wind. The race should do away with the trail run in Nags Heads Woods. Way too narrow and sandy to expect runners to navigate it safely. Should have some sort of fruit for runners to eat along the route. Also, should somehow have the course run along the ocean; afterall, it is the Outer Banks! Plan to do it again.

I

I was so impressed by this inaugural marathon! Of course, the scenery was beautiful, but the volunteer, police, and medical support was incredible. I'm a walker and found continuous support throughout the course to the very end! The shuttles were well organized and on time. The course was well marked. In spite of the rain and wind there were cheering crowds all along the way... even for us walkers who were at the end of the pack! The medal was beautiful. I can't say enough good things about this marathon. Congratulations on an inaugural event well done!

Huge success for an inaugural. No one had any control over the weather, but spirits were high and enthusiastic. Love the mix of trail and asphalt. Gorgeous scenery. I could not believe spectators were out so early. It was wonderful.

For their first time, okay, but needs work

This marathon was my tenth marathon and it was very disappointing. The expo was small, and there weren't enough bathrooms (I stood in line for 45 minutes and almost missed the start). The course was blah, and they used plastic cups and not paper ones at the water stations.... The course was scenic, though, and the sites were beautiful. My daughter loved the vacation but overall the marathon was not worth my time. I understand that it was the first one and I am sure it will be better next time, so I would be willing to run it again to see if improvements were made. If you are going to participate for the vacation time, it is worth it because the area is beautiful and there is lots to do. If you are going to run for a PR or so then give it a year or two.

A very commendable inaugural marathon!

On the positive side, the expo was small but nice, with first-class OBX Marathon merchandise. The shuttle system to the start worked well for me, though some of the directions the day before the race were more confusing than they needed to be. The course was scenic and varied and very well marked. I loved the trail section, complete with orange painted roots to alert the runners! The spectators and volunteers were incredible on a very nasty, rainy day! The support from the local communities was outstanding, with law enforcement officers and firemen everywhere! Even the drivers that were stuck in traffic rolled down their windows to cheer for the runners. The water stops and first aid stations were well-manned and adequate. On the negative side, the staging area at the start needed MORE port-a-johns!!! Also, at the finish, the post-race fare consisted of fruit and bagels with peanut butter. Some salty snacks would have been nice, please. All in all, a great inaugural marathon!

Liked it a lot

A really fun course, although not as flat as you'd expect or their promos would lead you to believe. Having a three-mile cross-country trail stretch in the middle of the race was different, for sure, and more fun. Didn't care too much for the long walk from the finish line to the shuttle bus, but San Diego is worse, so everything is relative. An excellent effort for an inaugural event. They didn't have enough port-a-potties at the starting line, but who does? The community really seemed to get behind the event, and it was just a lot of fun, despite the mid-race heavy showers.

Totally, totally awesome.

A terrific event, along the prettiest 26 miles on the planet. Yeah, I know, it rained (hard at times), but the weather didn't seem to bother the runners and spectators who were too busy living la vida OBX - fantastic water views, a little off-road action (in the piney woods), with monuments, golf courses, and bridges making things interesting along the way. Well-organized, with a fun expo and laidback beach vibe throughout. Can't wait to try it again....

Had a blast even with the rain

For a first-time event, I was impressed. The shuttles were like clockwork. I've never run a trail in my life but I must say the trail part was my favorite. The Wright Bros. Park was really nice, but when I hit the straightaway on 158 the rain came and even that was cool. The bridge was easy and the finish at the high school track was a nice touch for the finish. I don't know if it was me or the mile markers but I was a little confused and it was difficult timing each mile.

This was my first marathon and I found it to be a very smooth event. I also felt that all of the locals were behind the event as there were countless people along the course cheering us on in the pouring rain. Coupled with the great scenery, this is an event I will never forget!

Good but could be better

It's hard to give a fair assessment to this race because the rain made my experience pretty miserable. We had an absolute downpour around 15-17 miles. Could have been better organized at the end - for example, after the finish it was unclear where to go for food or where to change clothes. Also, at the start there were at least 100 people waiting to use the port-a-potties - definitely need more of those.

Great Fun at OBX!!

I completed my first half-marathon yesterday and it was a lot of fun. The course was easy and flat, with one hill over the bridge, but it wasn't really that bad. The spectators were great and even stayed out in the pouring rain. There weren't that many of them, but I didn't really expect there to be. Only suggestions would be to have more tents at the finish line to protect people from poor weather/heat and to have a better shuttle plan. Sitting on the shuttle for an hour to get back to the shuttle stop was brutal for the muscles and the shuttle driver could have been a bit more cautious. He slammed on the brakes a couple of times causing sore runners to go flying forward. Other than those two suggestions, the race was great and I would do it again!!!

Very good inaugural effort!

As a resident of the Outer Banks (Corolla) it was interesting to watch this event unfold as it approached its inaugural running. I think that the race was conducted very well, and had it not been for the monsoon that blew in from the south halfway through the race, it would've been a banner day for both the runners AND the area. Aside from my GPS indicating I ran 26.47 miles and the aforementioned monsoon directly in my face from mile 13 to mile 20, the course was very runner friendly -- even the stretch through the woods, which seemed like it would never end. The beauty of the Outer Banks showed through even when the sky was at its darkest. Given the weather, the course support was great, and the volunteers that staffed the water stops were very encouraging and well organized. A couple of suggestions are in order, though: (a)need many many more portajohns at the start line area, (b) would like to have seen a clock SOMEWHERE on the course (since my GPS obviously was not tallying the same mile marks as the course was indicating)-- it would've been good to have them at 6mi, 13.1mi, and at 20mi, and (c) the gear check bags and bag recovery seemed a little bit suspect. Those were all fairly minor issues; I did not utilize the shuttles that were provided, and cannot speak to their quality. But, without question, I look forward to running this race many more times.

Super Southern Hospitality

A beautiful course: sea views, several miles of wooded trail and residential areas where the homeowners were the friendliest I had ever come across. I have run some races where residents have tried to stop future races through their neighborhoods. Not in the OBX Marathon.

great location

Those who came out and cheered were AWESOME - thank you!! I ran the half-marathon. Two suggestions: Better organization for UPS pickup, and better traffic control post-race. It was very difficult to leave Manteo (we drove due to fear of not getting shuttle, so better shuttle organization would be good). Otherwise, job well done!!!

Tough day at the races

I ran the inaugural marathon yesterday and here are my thoughts: The expo was nice, but a bit congested. It seemed like a lot of people were running into each other and a bit confused. The course was more challenging than I thought it would be. The miles in the woods were rolling and in areas it felt like you were running in quicksand where you couldn't get any type of lift and got sucked down into the loose sand. The area also had some single-track areas, which made it hard to get around those who were walking. I was really glad when that portion was over. Running on Highway 158 was somewhat tedious. Cars driving by you slowly with their exhausts filling your airway weren't the best motivation. And then the rain came. At first it was welcome due to the warm start but I was at mile 16 when it really came down and that was hard to handle. My shoes had inches of water in them and my shirt and shorts were literally stuck to my body. The wind just added to the pounding of the rain in your face. And then there was mile 21 over the bridge. It was a long hill but the grade was gentle. The decline was welcome but the aid station was closer to mile 23 than 22, so that was also a nice surprise. I also wished they would've made the mile markers stand out a bit more with flags or balloons. The crowd support was just okay. The people who did brave the weather were great but I think a lot of people bagged it because of the rain. The finish was soggy and slippery before you reached the track. I don't know how anyone in a wheelchair could have made it through that patch. Overall this race and course were challenging. You can't plan for the weather but the stretch in the woods and the bridge were both taxing on the body and mind. The volunteers were great, as were the local supporters that did come out. The scenery was lovely in parts but I was hoping for more water views. I think this race could be great with a few tweaks.

Good Inaugural Marathon

Overall I liked the marathon and would consider doing it again. The volunteer support was excellent and the community really turned out to make this a good event. Would recommend more Gatorade or energy drinks available on the course. Also, better marking of the miles. The signs looked just like highway mile markers, and it took time to figure out they were markers for the marathon. Good mix of road running and trails, which made the race a bit of a challenge. Overall, a good start for a marathon that has a promising future.

Great start, but needs work

There was a lot of hard work and organization; restaurants were unprepared for runners; traffic was very bad, as the main road was closed; not enough porta-johns at the start (I waited 55 minutes and there were 100's behind me); mile markers were very hard to find (some behind tents); did not like the run through the woods in the sand (5 miles) and the causeway was tough for a finish; and no water after 22.5? People were great and helpful - a few changes and this could be fun. I visit 4-5 times a year and enjoy the area.

great marathon for an innaugural run

The EXPO was surprisingly large for a smallish marathon, and packet pickup was very easy and smooth. A little more signage indicating where to go for the expo would have been nice, but we eventually found it. I don't think the organizers were expecting so many runners, as we received strong suggestions to find an alternate ride to the start, despite having reserved space on the shuttle. Drop-off was relatively smooth, though there was no place for drivers to park and watch the start, so unless you lived there you really couldn't see the runners off. But there were many points along the route for supporters, and despite the horrible driving rain after about 9:00, the spectators were out cheering us on in full force - incredible! I especially liked the barbershop quartet - live entertainment is great in a long race. It rained like crazy and people still came out in the rain. There were no clocks on the course, and the mile markers weren't always easily visible - it wasn't until mile 3 that I was even able to see one. Also, 22-23 were not accurate - I guess they weren't allowed to place 22 on the bridge, so it was very close to the marker for 23. The course was advertised as flat, and we excpected it to be run on pavement, but miles 8 - 12 were actually on a hard-pack then pine-needle covered trail which was kind of hilly. The course runs through neigborhoods, then around the Wright Brothers Monument at Kitty Hawk, and more than I would have liked was on the main thoroghfare, with one lane blocked for runners. For the parts run on the main roadway, there was plenty of police support to protect us from traffic, but at one point the officers held up runners to let cars pass. A little education of the police force will help clear up this problem for future years. The bridge at miles 20 - 22.5 was a big one, and the wind and rain didn't make it any easier but we can't blame the director for the weather. There was plenty of water and Gatorade along the course, and gel was offered later in the race. Even for slow runners like me there was plenty of gel left. The volunteers were unfailingly enthusiastic and many businesses had welcome signs out front. When I thanked spectators for coming out to cheer us on, they almost always thanked me for coming. I am glad to have run this innaugural race, and I think it will only get better.
