Disappointed

Corrals to start separate the crowd by times. But an additional 5 minutes between corrals is NOT necessary. With a cut off time, the delay only hurts the slower runners. Why should the slower runners start as much as 30 minutes after the fast runners.

Miles of smiles!!!

From the Expo to the Finish Line, this was a well-run, fun event! It was a super COLD start, sub 30s. The earlier water stops provided slushies bc of the freezing temps- that was first for me and made me laugh. :D I had to layer up well bc the last hour was in the mid- low 40s. I wore shorts and calf sleeves- perfect choice- and 3 layers of long sleeves on top, which became 1 layer for the last 9mi. The course was SO great- I feared I would get bored on the long out-back x2, but it was AWESOME: on road then sidewalk/path, only a little repetitive, but seeing the other runners were a great distraction. We hardly ran on Route 66, but no loss there. I had heard that the hills at the end were removed- but THEY WERE NOT. I was quite hill-trained, and was not so happy on the up up up that seemed never-ending on tired legs! Miles 18-23 were the toughest, but then it flattened out again for a nice finish to the end. Crowd support was amazing, awesome finish line with plenty of BEER. My only complaint was there was no Gatorade to be found at the finish!!! :( Water stops were well stocked, but not the finish line. All in all, I highly recommend this race! Maniac support was so amazing, and the city of Tulsa offered such great views, nice people, and such a well organized event! I smiled SO much in this one! Just don't believe if you hear there aren't hills in this one....you will DEFINITELY feel those suckers towards the end!

Loved it!

This race was chilly and breezy, so just perfect for running. Although not a flat course, there are not really any hills, more like undulations. I was worried that the race would thin out after the half marathon mark but still a good number of runners the whole way. One road had a speed bump hazzard, be aware! I would have done the detour faster if I had known I was going to be ranked on it. Overall, I'm glad I picked route 66!

Never ending hills

Although this marathon is tough (I swear somehow more hills this year) it is well supported by the city. Well organized with volunteers and law enforcement galore. There are so many parties going on around you which helps give you a little pep when tired. Great job Tulsa!

Challenging course but still a party

The hills are never ending here....a friend who has run this a few times (& over 80 marathons in her life) confirmed this is hillier than the Baltimore marathon. But not as bad as the GA marathon in Atlanta. Very well organized start and finish area. Well stocked official aid stations, never had to wait for a bathroom. It is a true party along the route with too many unofficial stops serving alcohol and treats to count. Nice medal. I loved the start, each corral had confetti shot out as they crossed the mat making us all feel like elite starters. I loved the jacket. This year the weather was not ideal, cold but also VERY windy at times. Still had a lot of spectators lining the route, bundled up.

Lots of rolling hills and alcohol

It was a cold miserable day but that wasn't anyone's fault. There were probably less spectators as a result but the ones that were out there were ready to party. Lots of beer and shots. More than I have ever seen. Music blasting at the block parties. Ran through really pretty neighbor hoods. Lots of water and gatorade. Well run except for the shuttles!!!

Fun race, great course support!

The marathon was good - course relatively flat, some repeat scenery, and LOVE the Center of the Universe detour (with coin!). Fans thinned out a lot after the half course split off, but were spirited (more beer and jello shots offered per mile than any other race I've run). Water stops & port-a-potties were plentiful (at start and on course). Expo was decent (variety as expected for a big-name race), though low on signs to the location, parking, and inside the building. The race 'tee' (full zip jacket) is AWESOME, and nice looking medals. Definitely would recommend this race to a friend!

Wish I had the TV series Corvette for the hills!

Top 10 Reasons to Run Route 66 10 - Start Line - the most organized, hassle-free and non-chaotic Start Line I've experienced 9 - Native American ceremony before National Anthem - a distinct Oklahoma stamp on the race 8 - Confetti guns at Start Line - they make you feel like you're a hero in a ticker tape parade as you get showered with confetti crossing the Start Line 7 - Tulsa PD - amazing job managing the dozens/hundreds of intersections 6 - Fall foliage and beautiful neighborhoods 5 - Swag - very cool race jacket 4 - Course organization - Mile markers and Gatorade/water stops were clearly organized and signed 3 - Center of the Universe - what other marathon give you the option to brag that you've also run an "ultra" 2 - Hills - in trying to think of a good thing to say about the relentless hills, I came up with this: Know that as you cross the Finish Line for the Route 66, you will have completed one of the most difficult marathons (the MOST difficult of my 66 thus far)! 1 - Medal - even though the hills may prohibit a PR, you will be gifted with "speed" with the wonderful "Goddess of Speed" medal at the Finish Line. One of the best medals!

Best Race every Year

I love this race. The course is challenging and the energy level of the crowds is superb! The expo is huge and fun with lots of activities, special Route 66 gear and some great food. Packet pick up is generally pretty smooth and you get a great swag bag. The water stops along the course are awesome. with some exceptional block parties along the way as well. Especially famous mile 9 - complete with jello shots, snacks, photo ops and more. The finish line is probably the most smoothly run finish line I've crossed, with an excellent post race party and VIP Section! This is a must do race!

good race , nice jacket and finish medal

I and others I have contacted are extremely upset and disappointed with their handling of the so called age group awards. I won my age group and instead of giving it to me after the race they said it would be mailed within a month. I have emailed 4 times and each time they were going to be the best awards and mailed the next week. It is now 8 weeks and nothing. How could a race of that size do that? If they have no intentions of doing so let the racers know. I would not do this race if you are good enough to place.

Enjoyable half marathon

Course: Yes, rolling hills. The last mile was a beast. Not a huge hill, but a long one. Hills throughout were really not THAT bad, there were just quite a few of them. It's a beautiful course! You go through some fabulous neighborhoods! I appreciated the cheers! Organization: top notch Spectators and volunteers: really fun and encouraging. Smile, say 'Thank you', be positive and encouraging to others, let them know you appreciate them coming out. I loved that they came out on a cold morning to be supportive! Tulsa Police Department: TOP SHELF! They did a great job keeping us safe and were so encouraging! The whole day was great. The confetti and music at the start was so fun! I enjoyed the paparazzi (photographers) too! What a spunky bunch! This was a really fun race!

Loved the course. Lots of hills

This was my 1st marathon but it was discouraging that the mile markers and timers seemed to disappear with about 6 miles left. It was frustrating to not know how much farther. Several of us 1st timers expressed the same frustration as we plodded along together. Other than that it was great.

Well organized, hilly, and hard on the knees

The organization was fantastic. The start area was easy to navigate. A group of Native Americans were playing tribal drums before the national anthem. The race started on time. I thought Tulsa was flat. Boy was I wrong. There were no 'killer hills', but there was plenty of rollers. The course support was great for the first half but dwindled in the latter miles. The neighborhoods were great and some even offered jello shots and beer. There were plenty of aid stations and the finish area was pretty good. The one thing that hurt me the most was all of the concrete streets. It seemed as if half the race was on concrete. It really beat up my legs in racing flats. Maybe more cushioned shoes would have helped. Overall it was a good experience and I would run it again if I lived closer. Tulsa is not a great 'destination' city.

Chilly hilly windy race

I ran this marathon to check off Oklahoma on my quest for 50 states. The course is challenging. The entire course is filled with rolling hills, there are only a few spots where you're not going up or down a hill. None of the hills are extremely challenging or daunting, but they are non-stop. The hills particularly pick up after the halfway mark when you leave downtown and head east. It's a stretch of a few miles of unrelenting climb. The last 3 miles or so do have the net elevation drop as you head back towards downtown, but there are rolling hills around every turn and over every hill crest. Again, none of the hills are very difficult or daunting, they just keep coming at you. Tulsa is also a windy area in general, and that combined with November temperatures (race temperates average about high 30s-low 40s at the start and 40s-50s at the finish) can make for a chilly race. That being said, I saw runners dressed in full winter gear (hats, mittens, long tights, sweatshirts) all the way down to runners in nothing more than race singlets and shorts. The race organization was top notch. The starting line was well configured with ample bathrooms for runners. The expo was awesome with tons of free samples, booths for local races and running stores as well as big box brands, cool displays, and much more. Getting your race bib and race jacket was very quick and easy. The course officials were all wonderful, as were the police monitoring and blocking traffic to keep the runners safe. The aid stations were well staffed and well stocked at all times. The volunteers were phenomenal, perhaps the best part of this race. There were so many race volunteers helping out from the expo, at each aid station, at confusing turns on the race course, and at the finish line. Top notch race organization, staff and volunteers. The race spectators were great, when you came upon a popular spot for spectators. There were big stretches of the race where there were little to no spectators, and in a marathon that gets spread out pretty quickly, there are times when you are completely alone. In some of the neighborhood portions of the race, you might only see a handful of people out on their front lawns cheering you on. Occasionally there are a few people at the intersections. One of the better spots for spectators came at about mile 6-7 down a street with many businesses on both sides. There were a large group of spectators on the sides of the street with blaring music coming from the rooftops playing EDM music. It was loud, the spectators were having a great time, and it was a huge boost to myself and many other runners around me at that time. It's too bad it was so early on in the race, because there are some lonely spots later on where I really could have used the help. So in summary, the spectators were great, if you were lucky enough to be around them at any given time during the race. Overall, I'm glad I ran this marathon. It was a very challenging course. I ran a 3:41 - well off my PR despite being in shape for one, and I finished in the top 7%, right around the top 100 out of 1500. 1400 of 1500 runners ran 3:41 or higher. That to me says how challenging the course is.

Hilly but fun race- superbly org'd and supported

I ran the 2016 Williams Route 66 Marathon and could not be happier. The social media ahead of time (Twitter/IG) was excellent and got me excited to run and buy cool stuff the expo. Organizers coordinated well with local hotels (I got the package from Doubletree - shuttles, free breakfast, discounted parking and late check out). The packet pick up was smooth (by number), and the course was VERY well supported by Tulsa PD. There were tons of nice neighborhood parties (jello shots and beer!) and people cheering till quite late in the day. Course was naturally hilly but the architecture was gorgeous, as were the leaves. When I finished at 6:10, the water/gatorade stops were still well stocked with drinks and volunteers. The finish line had plenty of food, heat wraps and buses back to the start/hotels. I finished at 6:10 and it's rare that the support is still there for the slow pokes. Thank you TULSA and the team at Williams Route 66!

Hilly tour through beautiful Tulsa

I loved the course that took us through some gorgeous neighborhoods where many people were out to support the runners. Unlike many marathons, after the half-marathoners split off we still enjoyed beautiful scenery. The downsides are as others have mentioned: extremely long lines at the Expo to pick up our race packet. Plus getting into the corrals race morning took a really long time. There were no signs indicating the corrals, and the volunteers at the corral entrance were overwhelmed. There needs to be more than one entrance into each corral. We were encouraged to enter the corrals early, but there aren't porta potties in the corrals or a place to sit which means most of us aren't going to stand around in the cold for very long. I was also disappointed in the poor food selection at the finish area. It seems there was more emphasis on beer than on something we could actually eat. The volunteers were wonderful and the medal and jacket are top-notch. I'm sure you can fix the problems with the corrals and at the Expo.

A very well-organized marathon

Once again the Route 66 Marathon sold out and it easy to understand why when you have the opportunity to run here. Despite having thousands of runners and a busy schedule, the efforts of race director Tim Dreiling of Fleet Feet made it possible for me to participate in this event. And there are tons of volunteers assisting throughout the course - even pointing out individual speed bumps on the roads. The course is indeed hilly with plenty of turns, but the experience that Tulsa has in supporting this event more than makes up for it. Any fifty stater looking to cross Oklahoma off the list should definitely run this marathon.

Ups and Downs

This race gets a mixed review from me. I really liked the good things about this race while strongly disliking the bad areas of this race. Overall, I think it is a pretty good race, though I'm not sure I would recommend it to someone looking to run Oklahoma. The Good: Medal is top notch. Participants Jacket is very nice. Support on the course was abundant even on a cold day. The course is tough but good. Weather, though RD can't control, was excellent Sunny (32 degrees at start 45 degrees by finish) City and neighborhoods we ran through were gorgeous. The Bad: Expo had a line wrapped all through the facility just to pick up your packet. Volunteers were not given a proper way to look up each participant therefore it took forever to receive our packets. This is my biggest complaint & I registered day one of registration guaranteeing my size for my participant jacket. When I arrived to pick it up my size was unavailable. Not only that, I got the very last jacket of the size larger. To me this is just unacceptable. There is no reason I should have been guaranteed a size and it was gone when I got to the expo. The expo as a whole was a bust. We did not see any merchandise worth purchasing. The course: The course is tough. This is not necessarily a bad, more a warning. I train in hilly Pittsburgh and still think it was a hilly course. First half is fair, you get a downhill after the uphill. Like reviews from previous years, I agree there is not a flat spot on the course. At mile 12 you start an uphill that continues until around mile 19. This was enough to kill our pace. 19 to 23 are a fair mix of up and downhills. Once you get to mile 23 it is more downhill than up for the remainder to the race. Be prepared for hills and you'll be okay. The scenery on the course is incredible, some of the nicest neighborhoods I've run through. The course never took us through a visually bad part of town.

Good, But Not Great

A nice course with lots of rolling hills and nice scenery, but a non-descript finish area. I thought that the organization left something to be desired. A long line for packet pick-up that did not seem necessary, and not well organized water stations. My biggest complaint was the poor etiquette of my fellow runners who did not self seed well and did not know to not come to a dead stop at water stations. More pre race education would be helpful. Post race food was very good and the jacket and medal are very nice. Thanks to the crazy sign carrying cheer section for all of their support.

Want to run fast? Go somewhere else.

If you're looking to run fast I would advise looking elsewhere. This race clearly doesn't care about the 'top 1%'. They have VIP for marathon maniacs (group of slow weekend warriors), And other people that have money, but could care less if your goal is to race. Course monitors are not at every intersection and the course is not marked well. If you get caught in no mans land, very possible to take a wrong turn if you don't have the course memorized. Minimal toilets at the start, even A corral had a line 20minutes deep full of non-racers and D corral folk, didn't make sense. Wish I could get this weekend back and go somewhere else.

Good Race, Hilly Course

All in all a great race. Well organized, police do a great job keeping the roads clear, water stops were well stocked. Not a ton of spectators along the course but you do run through some pretty areas of Tulsa. The major downside of this race was the hills. They don't look that bad on the elevation chart but they add up after a while. We were not prepared for them and it made the last half of the race pretty painful. We stayed at the Holiday Inn that was just a block away from the start and it was perfect. So nice to stay warm and show up at the start at the last minute.

Good Marathon

I live near Tulsa and this is my 3rd Route 66 marathon. This is a fairly hilly course and I heard a lot of people talking about how hilly it is. If you are ready for hills then you will pass a lot of people in the last 10 miles of this race. My Garmin showed the total cumulative elevation gain as 1063ft. Here is the URL for my elevation chart http://s1137.photobucket.com/user/48down/media/rt66marathonelevationchart_zps6dc8408d.jpg.html I think this chart makes it look hillier than it really is. The volunteers for this race are great and there are a decent number of spectators along the route. The bands/music along the course are good. I thought the water/gatoraide stops were great. They are big and spread out and I never had trouble getting water. The expo was good although we also had to ask where packet pickup was located. Corral organization is good, although I had to get my corral changed from D to A at the expo because I registered after Sept 30th. It was easy to get it changed but it would've been nice not to have to.

Disappointing

I ran the first Route 66 Marathon and was very impressed. The old course was not that great, but the goody bag was the best ever - sweatshirt, free long sleeve tech-finisher shirt, sandals for the end. I was back this year and was much less impressed with the event. The course was more scenic, but very hilly throughout. It's not a large field, but they stagger the coral starts by 5 minutes. Yes, they make you stand and wait even though that is really not necessary. Worst of all, the make you purchase your finisher shirt. I've run 12 marathons and this is the first time I've ever had to buy my finisher shirt. Unbelievable. Bag pick up at the Expo was unorganized. They make you walk to three very separated places in the room to fill your bag. I did not receive a bag for checked gear and did not notice until it was too late. On the plus side, there were plenty of aid stations that were well manned all along the course. Just can't recommend this event any more. I won't return.

Good overall race, finish could be better

I have participated in this race several times in several different course arrangements. While most of their adjustments over the years were for the better, when they moved the finish to the back side of Guthrie Green in downtown they lost a lot of atmosphere for the runners. For the marathoners the last several miles are by far the worst part of the course. Mile 23-26 is not where you want the worst part of the course to be. And for all runners the last 1/2 mile is far from building to a climatic finish. You are routed on some of the least scenic roads of downtown with virtually no crowd support until the very last block. If organizers insist on Guthrie Green finish they could move it to the South side and route the last few blocks much better. Although I would prefer a finish at Veterans Park like it was up until 2013. My comments only focus on the negative but overall I must say this is a very good marathon and very well organized, it just needs one adjustment to make it great like it used to be.

Good but details important

Course was more hilly than expected and ran through mostly suburban neighborhoods so not much to take your attention from it. Not a huge number of spectators, considering the good weather, but those that came out were very enthusiastic. A large number of live bands and recorded music was a great touch. Great route policing/volunteers. Nice refreshment stops with gatarade at each one and well marked. Only negative was when it switched to gatarade on one side of the street and water on the other side made for confusion. The only other confusion when all along red was for marathon and blue for half, but the sign for the split off for the two routes had the colors opposite. Great touch to have hotels convenient to the start to pre-arrange late checkout. This should be a best practice everywhere. The Aloft hotel was next door to the packet pickup and the start so very convenient. Disappointed with the packet pickup arrangement: No directions upon entry as to where to go to get your packet. My packet did not contain the race booklet so had to go back, but then later noticed it did not have the clear bag check either so had to go back in again. The t-shirt is lame/cheap compared to what you expect. Expo did have enough to get what you needed. Not much of a selection of restaurants open within walking distance of the start area. Starting corral arrangements were well planned and seemed to work well. Finish was confusing as I was given the wrong medal and thought to check before I got too far, but many others are not thinking straight at that point and the presenters could check. Not major but many were confused on where anything was such as the gear bag retrieval area, where the shuttle buses are located etc. It also was not readily apparent where a finisher should go to cheer on the following finishers coming in.

Very good mid sized race

There were a couple of unique things that help make this race worth running. The course is constant rolling hills through many different areas of Tulsa. The pace leader told us that this year the course was changed so we ran about 1 mile on Route 66. I noticed no issues with the corrals, but I did not look at the one I was assigned, I just lined up near the pace team I planned to run. The Center of the Universe was a cool feature to an otherwise non-descript course. The post race food and drink was plentiful and good. I also liked the special area for Maniacs and 50 staters. Overall a very good organized race.

Much hillier than expected.

This was a well run marathon. My corral experience was perfect contrary to reports from past years. Water stops and the finish line were all very well organized. Every mile marker has a clock. The one big thing was... this was MUCH hillier than I had expected and I heard every single person comment on the hills. I had reviewed the elevation chart before registering, but somehow that chart didn't give me the proper understanding of how hilly it would be. I finished about 7 minutes slower than expected, but it was my fastest marathon from a relative standpoint (the ranking of my finish overall and in my division). I would recommend running this, but plan on running it slower than you trained for.

Well orgnized race w/ nice perks!

I am a 50 stater who ran here as my Oklahoma race. I usually prefer smaller races (this race had 2000 in full and 4700 in half) but I decided to run because of the perks offered to 50 staters. I was not disappointed. 50 staters and maniacs get a special pre and post race area and specific medals. First time marathoners get special medals too. But the entire race is well organized so all runners feel pampered. The race has already negotiated with the host hotels to give runners a late (3:00) check out. All races should do this! There are plenty of aid stops (all with sports drink) and volunteers. In 2013 we had brutally cold weather and still there were plenty of smiling supportive volunteers along the way. Many were set up to warn runners of ice patches ahead. The course is not terribly scenic but its pleasant as we run through neighborhoods surrounding Tulsa. There are numerous rolling hills. None alone are that tough but collectively they can hurt. I live in a hilly area so I did not think the course was too bad but I heard lots of complaints. I think most of these folks were expecting a flat course and were surprised. Check out the elevation chart. I gave the race only 3 stars for fans but it was very cold in 2013 so I can't blame folks for not coming out. I'm suspect the support is better in other years but I don't know for sure. I had the same issue with corral selection as other runners have identified but I just stood at the front of the corral and it was fine. The race could probably use one more corral because about 1 mile into the race we turn right onto a street that is too narrow this early in the race. But perhaps that complaint is a bit nitpicky. This race has a fun distinction. They offer a .3 mile (purely optional) detour where runners can run by what Tulsa calls 'The Center of the Universe'. You can experience a unique echo and get a cool commerative coin. This detour comes at the 25.5 mile mark so many folks understandably just want to finish. I took the detour and completed what the race jokingly calls the world's shortest ultra race!! I stayed in the Holiday Inn host hotel. It was literally steps from the start line (a blessing on this bitterly cold morning) and they have a free shuttle from the airport. They were very accommodating to the runners. Tulsa was very dead in the evenings. Restaurant options within walking distance were limited. I ended up eating every meal in my hotel. They had a good restaurant luckily but if you want some variety I think you'll need to rent a car. The expo was well organized, not too crowded and effortless. You can purchase race themed souvenirs if that's your thing. The medals are great but the short sleeve tech t-shirts are surprisingly bland. As I said I usually prefer smaller more intimate races but I really enjoyed my experience in Tulsa and I suspect others would have the same feelings.

Nice Marathon

I had the same issue with the corral. I have run the last 3 marathons in the 3:45 to 4:00 range and was put in corral D. The corral letter so small on the bib, I just walked into the corral A and they didnt say anything. So it ended up much to do about nothing. Stayed at the Holiday Inn, which is just a few steps from the start line. That was important since it was 23 degrees at the start. Overall I like the course. Rolling hills are fair (e.g., not too steep). Start and end in downtown but most of the marathon is though residential areas. Odd its called Route 66 but never really run on Route 66. Always had enough room to run, didn't feel closed in by other runners. The pace group leader was spot on. The post-race set up had spaghetti , thought that was a nice touch. Medal is a keeper, the short T was about average Other than the SNAFU with the corral set up, I would recommend this marathon

Wonderful, Fun, Well-Organized Race!

Loved this race! It was my 29th marathon so I have a decent amount of races to compare to. Course - Moderately rolling but nothing too difficult. Can run a good time on this course. Does give you a nice tour of Tulsa. Title of race is a bit misleading as only a tiny fraction of this race is on Route 66. First part of the marathon is actually a bit harder than the second half. They also have a 5 person relay but they never got in the way of the marathoners. Spectators - With a start temperature of 24 degrees and really not warming up much during the race, I wasn't expecting to see anyone out there. To my surprise, there were a good amount of very cheerful spectators. Many were standing on their front lawns offering encouragement as well as warmth (yes some people actually were burning wood to keep warm). Traffic Control - Tulsa Police did an excellent job maintaining traffic. Never had to worry about getting run over. They were also very friendly and encouraged the runners. Volunteers - Just plain awesome! So many of them too! Plenty of well stocked hydration stations serving water and gatorade at each stop. Organization - 5 stars! From the large details to the small details, everything was run very smoothly. From having volunteers stationed at trouble spots such as ice patches or speed bumps alerting us to such obstacles to even thinking of the small details such as providing heat lamps near the finish lines in order that fans and those that finished waiting for friends could keep warm. Bag pickup was a breeze with me just walking up to the tent and a volunteer spotting me and handing me my bag without me even uttering a word. Accommodations - I stayed at the Double Tree which is the host hotel just blocks from the start and right across the street from the expo. Great hotel at a very fair and affordable price. They even offered a late checkout. In summary, this is a very well organized and fun race. The town definitely supports the runners and the organizers really do take into account the needs of runners. I would definitely recommend this race wholeheartedly. Oh and if you like bbq, go to Rib Crib for some great food!

FIRST MARATHON!!!

Okay, I'm a Tulsa native who LIVES in Tulsa! I trained on all the hills, the streets, on a lot of the course. I love my city! Not to start a war about crowd support but the temperatures were brutal!! I don't blame people for not standing out on the curb with a wind chill of 16!! But for those who did, THANK YOU!! I loved everything about this race (except the temps but that's not race organizers fault!). I loved the hilly course, through downtown, utica square, Cascia Hall, Brookside, Riverside, TU, Cherry Street, all the way to Guthrie Green! And, Bart Yasso patting me on the back at the finish? HECK YEAH!! I met many people on the course who were from out of town who told me how nice Tulsa was, and how friendly the people were! That says a lot! I highly recommend this race, we'd love to have you and hopefully next year it won't be so brutally cold! Looking forward to my next marathon..WHERE should I go?!?!

Corral insanity

Corral insanity indeed. I won the men's 60 age and had been placed in D Corral with pace designated at over 12 min per mile when i had listed my expected finish time as 3:45 (which i missed by 2 min.) I had to work through literally thousands of slower runners who were placed in Corrals A and B, many who were obviously slower runners, some of whom were walking after just a few miles. I was not the only one who had to fight through slower runners as my travel buddy also won his age group and was also put in D corral. Further we heard from others experiencing the same corral misplacement. It's almost as if corral assignment was by random drawing. This is totally unacceptable and i will not run this marathon again and will spread the word until this issue is addressed.

2013 - Cold and Hilly - but a great race

Well organized event. Weather was brutal for Tulsa (gun time wind chill was 13 degrees and wind chill at Noon was 24, well below the average high of 56); combine the weather with the HILLS and this was a very challenging event. Water stations, while spaced apart a various distances prior to mile 20, where sufficient and well manned. Motivated volunteers provided much needed support in adverse weather. New route finishes in the Brady Arts District in Downtown Tulsa - great post-race food/beverage. Bart Yasso was one of the speakers at the expo and he was also greeting the runners at the finish line. And, the announcers stated your name, hometown and other congratulatory words as you crossed the finish line. Cherry St hills were brutal and pretty much Mile 15 to 22 was a steady uphill grind (so train accordingly...not a flat course). The medal was worth it! Huge medal and pictures don't do it justice. The organizers did a great job with corral assignments and the half-marathoners did not distract/interfere with the marathoners at all (the split just before Mile 13 was well marked). If you are looking for a challenging course with a great medal and great organization (without 45,000 other runners to join you) - then this is a race that must be on your list.

Great experience overall

I am a 50-State Club member and Marathon Maniac and the race treated us like royalty (although our private porta-potties were not at the start). I must admit that I found this marathon to be a LOT hillier than I expected!! It seemed like the entire mile from 18 to 19 was uphill. And the beginning of the race seemed all uphill. Despite the hills, the course had a lot of enthusiastic spectators. It wasn't incredibly scenic but it was fine. It definitely was fun to run under the real Route 66. Traffic control was excellent. I stayed at the Holiday Inn which was literally right next to the start (and had a free airport shuttle). And the race director had negotiated an automatic late checkout. It's a short walk to the expo from there. Keep in mind that most restaurants in Tulsa are closed on the weekends. The race was really well-organized. The finish area was comprehensive and well-marked. The post-race shuttle service was easy and quick. I ran this race for my Oklahoma race and was not disappointed. I just wish I liked running hills better!

Well organized and supported ... dull course

I would echo previous comments and say that this event seemed like the half was the star and the full was more of an afterthought. It definitely felt like once you passed the half finish you were running in a closed down industrial area or repeating the same areas. Overall, it wasn't a bad race but dull as a training run after the mid point. Traffic control was solid, but there was very little in the way of crowd support. The pavement was really torn up in long stretches of the course too. I also got really tired of all the rolling hills packed into the last half of the course. They weren't tough so much as just repetitive and boring.

Good organization

Good: Energetic, conveniently located and roomy expo, comedy-driven packet pick-up, decent technical shirt, adequate parking at hotels or throughout the town, committed and hospitable volunteers, very well traffic-controlled course, bottled Gatorade at end of race, closely located bus shuttles at end of race. Not-so-good: Finisher shirts were for sale.

One of the best organized marathons to date!

The race director was awesome and thought of everything! The hotels had automatic late check-out which was fantastic. There were volunteers at the hotels with race information and help navigating the city. Extra special touches for the members of the 50 states club - greatly appreciated. Volunteers were helpful, friendly and enthusiastic. Shuttles at end of race were plentiful - no waiting! The course had several miles that were not terribly scenic and no spectators making for a little tough patch but otherwise pretty course and great fans. Not too many eating options in Downtown Tulsa on the weekend - appears many food places are Monday-Friday. Would be great if some would open for this event and then let the runners know. Overall a very good experience.

Geared towards the half.

I would agree with some previous comments. It seemed like everything was put into the first half of this race. It seemed once you passed the half finish you were running in a closed down industrial area or repeating the same areas. Overall, it wasn't a bad race by any means. I'd consider it your average marathon. Pro- Wasn't overly crowded. Very well run. Traffic control was the best i'd ever seen at any race. Cons- The course was pretty boring over the second half. The pavement was really tore up (i'm a trail runner primarilly.. so it isn't a big deal to me but I was suprised at how tore up it was). This isn't a con, it was a moderately hilly course with lots of rolling hills. This isn't a bad thing I was just amazed that it isn't world record legal. If someone could run a record on this course they earned it. I would probably compare this course with Jackson, MS. I'd say just a little tougher than Little Rock and St. Louis. I'd consider Moline, IL. and Boston, easy courses.

Great race...but no finisher shirts :(

I just ran this race today so I wanted to jot down my thoughts about the race. This is a very well run race with a great course. The course winds through some beautiful parts of Tulsa as well as the scenic campus of Tulsa University. Nice rolling hills that weren't too challenging - with the exception of the hill at mile 25. The race was very well organized. I have run the half at this race three times and the marathon once. Each time the organization was spot on. The volunteers were also great and they all had plenty of energy. The water stops were appropriately spaced and adequately stocked. I only have one complaint about the race. There is no finisher shirt. Booo!! Apparently one can be bought, but this is the first marathon where I didn't receive a shirt for my efforts. The price of the marathon was pretty expensive for no finisher shirt. To give credit though, the expo shirts were nicely designed technical shirts. Overall, I really enjoyed this race and will run it again.

Great Marathon with perks for Marathon Maniacs

I ran Route 66 Marathon in Nov 2011. My wife is from Oklahoma and we came down from Montreal for Thanksgiving so I didn't know what to expect. I found great staff at the Expo. All went SUPER fast. Easy to look at the products or just get in and out quickly. The course was very nice. Not too hilly. Very scenic at times. Volunteers were there from beginining to end. Even coming in at over 5 hours I had no problem getting what I needed during the race and at the finish, lots left for everyone. All year round, the staff have been active on their Facebook page to keep folks interested in the race and are ALWAYS happy to help.Nice race organized by Marathon Maniacs that includes perks for Marathon Maniacs, Half Fanatics and 50-States Marathon Club. I'm signed up for 2012 and can't wait to do it again.

The 26.2 mile race was small, but good!

Overall, this was a good race, but everything associated with the marathon was extremely small! maybe there are a large number of people running the 5k, 10k, half marathon, relay, etc. but of the 11,000 people projected to run the Route 66 Marathon, only about 1,400 ran the full marathon and 3,000 ran the half... This was not my first marathon, and I collect the 'official' marathon poster at every race. However, this race never offered one, and I couldn't locate one at the expo either. The expo, was miniscule and didn't seem to have much of anything. This was sad for a marathon that I felt was advertised to be such a big race. The prices of the official race gear were very reasonable, just not very much to choose from... The course was scenic, for being in the heart of Tulsa, but my favorite part was the area that ran around the Tulsa campus! It was extremely windy, especially running along the river, and it was very hilly! Once again, I could not locate an elevation map on their website! Hopefully, they will change that in the future. Before the race, I decided to take the Center of the Universe Detour, but there were ABSOLUTELY NO SIGNS telling you where to go, which would have been nice! After I ran past where I should have turned, I had to run back down the bridge just to reach the Detour, a very poor arrangement! To make matters worse, the special coin you receive for taking the 'Detour' is given to you right there, and they make you carry it for the next 10 miles until you cross the finish line, again, not a very good idea! I had no problems with the bathrooms before, during, or after the marathon. I thought they did a very good job with the number and location of water stations, and I think they did an excellent job differentiating water from Gatorade. I thought they did a real nice job with all of the volunteers!

A Challenging Marathon

Great weather, if dressed for it for 37 F. Ran with a pace group assigned to a specific carrol. Great idea and well organized so that you didn't get ran over. My pace rabbit was great and kept the ballons in sight. Was needed for a quick restroom stop. The second half of the marathon was hilly and challenged my effort for a personal best. Great hotel at a fair price and wonderful people. Great medal and shirts. The best was the welcoming at the finish line. I came away with 2 shirts, a unique medal, weak legs, a new PR and a feeling of accomplishing something special. I got more than I expected.

Awesome, green race!

Very impressed! Weather was a challenge, but that was it! All else was great. We stayed at the Holiday Inn, which happened to be yards from the start line. Couldn't be a better place to stay, and not too $$$. Everyone at the hotel was knowledgeable about the race, and the bar was fun and cheap for after-race drinks. The expo was well organized, and within walking distance from the hotel. Loved that they were very attentive to recycling and 'going green.' They had separate water and gatorade jugs with large spouts for anyone who was carrying a water bottle to easily refill. They were set back from the main water station so that you didn't get caught in the crowd while refilling. Very smart and convenient. The course was more hilly than I had expected. I loved all the interesting neighborhoods and schools. Great spectators, even in 30 degree weather. The 2 shirts and medal were awesome. Very original. I will certainly encourage my friends to run this race. It's worth every penny!

Proud to be from Tulsa

Last year, I walked this as my first marathon, and it was a great experience, but what could I really compare it to. Since then I've done 3 others, all of which I thought were done well, but now that I have some experience under my belt, I have to say, I'm proud to be a Tulsan. My husband dropped me off within a couple of blocks of start line. Quick in & out of porta-potty line. Start well spaced so those of us in back not interfering with speedsters. I can't praise the volunteers enough. They were still enthusiastic & cheerful even for us trailing in at the end. Great shirt, I'll wear it a lot & I love the medal.

Great value, challenging but fun race

I really enjoyed this marathon! It was challenging, with either headwind or hills a large percentage of the time from around mile 10 on, but the course was interesting and well-designed. There was a nice variety of scenery: large buildings downtown, beautiful residential areas, the river, the university campus. The half marathoners ran with the marathoners almost the entire way, but I did not have to dodge any of them at the end of the race. The water/Gatorade stops were spaced well and staffed with friendly volunteers. And, as people have mentioned, the Gatorade was high-quality in a variety of flavors, and they were generous with GU for the last few stops. There was one part of the course that was a little hard for spectators to get to, but overall very pleased with the crowd support considering how cold it was. My only two race-day complaints were that they could use more restrooms at the start, and they had a sign at the 25.9 mark that almost gave me a heart attack, because the '.9' was so small that from a distance I could only see the '25,' and I started panicking at the thought that I hadn't actually passed the 25-mile mark yet. Unintentionally mean! The expo was a nice size: easy to pick up your packet and wander through. Nice t-shirts and technical tees for finishers, plus I picked up a great technical sleeveless 'Route 66' shirt on sale for only $10. And if bling is your thing, you're in luck: very original, high-quality medals. For the price, it's really a great marathon: high quality, but cheaper than the larger ones, not only in terms of the marathon itself, but in terms of lodging, too. And plenty of parking near the start and finish if you're not taking a shuttle. I highly recommend including it on your to-do list!

First half was awesome, second half got me

Beautiful scenic first half. Keep the full Riverside run - that is classic running spot for T-town. I was not prepared for the hills in the second half. I only saw only one stop that had bananas and oranges - great to see the non-lime gatorade drinks. I did the 'Center of Universe' detour - I like the additional coin I received ( and the beer!).

Great midsized city marathon

Felt like a real nice tour of the city. Downtown, business areas, residential areas, several posh neighborhoods with some ridiculous mansions, a kid's private school like something out of Harry Potter, a college campus, industrial parts of town, etc. Even Route 66 itself, for like a half mile? A lot of decently sized rolling hills that may make a PR tough to achieve and will challenge a novice marathoner, but nothing an experienced marathoner should be too concerned about. I would say hillier than the NYC marathon. Fifteen aid stations relatively well spaced out. Gatorade was full strength, not too watered down for a change, if that's your preference. Volunteers very friendly and helpful. Goodies: a regular cotton short T at the expo, PLUS a technical short finisher T at the finish line (yep, that's 2 shirts!!). A really nice, unique high quality medal. Expo was larger than expected.

Race organizer is very generous!

Tough course and cold weather, these things are temporary and soon forgotten. The medal will last forever and I am so thrilled that I rec'd a special medal that recognizes my participation in the 50 States Marathon Club. I believe first time marathoners and Maniacs also rec'd a special medal. We also got (2) shirts, one for participating and one for finishing. This is EXTREMELY generous and the effort to make me feel special were successful. Thanks so much! Also, the volunteers deserve an A+ for braving the cold temps and the high winds.

Prepare for late hills.

Tulsa. The city of extremes this year weather wise. Saturday before the race is was in the 70s with south winds. The forecast for Sunday kept changing and I went from a short sleeve to long sleeve shirt from Saturday evening to Sunday morning. Of course the south wind changed to north overnight which made waiting for the start a chilly deal since the temperature was now in the high 30s. I found the race course typical with rolling hills at the beginning then a long flat area along the river in the area before the half way mark for marathoners. The North wind was an issue heading back toward downtown and finding a group to draft was a necessity. The final few miles were harder than expected with sizeable character building hills around the 25 miles mark so save some fuel for the end. A couple of things to keep in mind. Most of the downtown food shops were closed Saturday. In fact the downtown area was almost a ghost town. The host hotels were close to the start line but there was about a mile walk to the finish area, hence the shuttle bus on Sunday.

A good, solid event

This was my 22nd marathon and I was very satisfied with all aspects of this race. The expo was pretty good (sure, they didn't have any xl shirts left but they said they'd mail me one asap, plus they gave me another smaller shirt which I was able to give to my daughter because they said they didn't want me to go home empty handed - nice). The start downtown was walking distance from several hotels and it wasn't overly crowded. Sure, the weather was kinda cold, but what can you do? My solution was to wear a sweatshirt and some thin gloves...brilliant! I thought the course was typical of a mid sized city like this, the downtown core was kinda lifeless but we quickly entered into some nice shopping and dining areas, attractive neighborhoods, and high school and college campuses. Were there some hills? A few, but nothing too serious. In fact, this was one of the easier courses I've done so far. And as an extra bonus, the fluid stops actually offered purple and red Gatorade, not just that vile lime stuff that everyone else seems to force on us. The finishing area was great, still lots of drinks and food when I got there (mid pack), the medal was superb, and the free shuttle bus back to the hotels was flawless. All in all a well run race.

I loved this race!

I was very pleased with the organization of this marathon. The expo was well run and had many interesting vendors (although they didn't have men's XL even on Friday). The hotels were so convenient and most offered late checkout, although I would check first if you are a slower runner as I almost didn't make it back in time. Some hotels had a 3:00 check out and some had a 2:00 check out. I was impressed with the course and didn't feel that there were too many hills. The first half was incredibly beautiful, and the second half had it's own interesting points. The Michelob detour was a fun diversion. It was chilly, and the wind coming off the river was brutal, but it wasn't unbearable if you dressed correctly. I am going to recommend this race to all my running buddies. The Tulsa volunteers were great and we enjoyed the city immensely.

Very hilly! Tough. Tulsa Volunteers A+

Extremely cold and windy! Second time running this marathon. Was disappointed in the course this year. The second half of the race has many difficult hills. Probably much more difficult with the 39 degree temp and 15- 20 mph winds that day. They changed the course to allow runners to see more of Tulsa. However, even though if was cool to see downtown, Tulsa University, etc... it made the race a lot more difficult because of all the turns and hills compared to the original course. The 5 mile stretch along the river is always tough going against the wind. The first 8 miles was nice. Really nice neighborhoods! A huge thank you to all the volunteers and race officials. They love what they do and this race has really grown because of them. Super job all around. Would agree with other comments that the race corrals are not needed at this point. Staggering the corals several minutes isn't needed. Allow people to find the pacers they want to be with. Forget the corrals - not enough runners for that to be necessary. Great medal once again. :) Nice hotels with good rates. Easy to get rooms.

Lots of hills, cold and windy

This was my third time to run this race and each time the course has been changed. It's really a brutal course with nothing but rolling relentless hills during the second half. The 6 miles or so of flat is not fun either. Probably the first 6 miles were the best part as none of the hills were too bad. Very cold and windy the whole race just made for a not so fun day. All I wanted is to be done. Volunteers were great and the Maniac perks tent was the best ever. Loved the medals!

Hard is the good!

Route 66 Marathon Tulsa, OK Sunday, November 20, 2011 8:00 AM This was my 87th marathon and I liked it A LOT! Packet pickup on Saturday was efficient. There was also a large expo. Each runner received a tote bag and short-sleeved cotton T-shirt. Pre-race pasta dinner on Saturday night was less than desirable (the food was semi-warm)! The start line was in downtown Tulsa. Race day temperature was in the 30s. It was chilly, windy, and cloudy; fortunately, no rain. There were water/sports drink stations at every other mile, staffed by a large number of cheerful volunteers. There were sports gels, bananas, and pretzels in a few locations. There were bands and individual musicians throughout the course. There were pace groups. Splits were digitally displayed. There were a large number of hilly sections. The course was monitored well and traffic control was quite good. The first half was fairly scenic as we ran through several residential neighborhoods where crowd support was pretty good. The second half wasn't scenic but wasn't too bad either. We shared the first half with the half marathoners. The finish line was in the Veterans Park. Each finisher received a very nice medallion and a short-sleeved technical T-shirt. There were adequate recovery drinks and food items at the finish. We were shuttled to the downtown area where we had parked our cars. In short, the 6th edition of Route 66 Marathon was a well-organized running event, which I think will continue gaining popularity among runners for years to come. There were 1439 marathon finishers (868 male, 571 female) in the average time of 4:43:02. The winning times were 2:28:33 (male) and 2:57:04 (female). There were also a fairly large number of relay marathon teams.

Brutal marathon due to the cold and lots of hills.

I ran my first marathon in 2007 and expected a similar course. There were a lot less hills so I expected my second marathon to be a lot better. The first half of the marathon was great to run but the amount of hills in the second half was brutal. I also think the cold weather caused the hills to be more difficult. Perhaps if they were spaced out a little more it would have been much easier.

Potential but some work to do

I signed up for this race about 2 1/2 weeks before the race as a training run between two other marathons. I hadn't run anything in Oklahoma either so it was a way to cross off a few from my list. Pros: Lodging-tons of it in Tulsa and if you're willing to drive a few miles, you can get really inexpensive rates. I stayed by the airport and it was easy to get downtown for the race. Expo-Small but easy to navigate. They did run out of XL and XXL shirts but notified participants of the issue in advance. Not a huge deal but still a little unfortunate. Race Corrals- Easy to get into and having the host hotel next door to keep people warm was great! Course-I enjoyed it. It rolls a bit but the worst hill is at mile 2. Then it's a nice run through various parts of the city. Cons: Corral Starting- It's usually a good thing but making each wave wait 5 minutes was completely overkill. I felt bad for the woman starting beside me who wanted to pace w/the 4 hour pacer only to find out they were in corral 'A' and they'd be 5 minutes ahead. She wasn't pleased! With the number of people, having corrals is great but there was zero need for the staggered start. There would have been plenty of room for everyone. Pacers: I know pacing is a tough and mostly thankless job but some of the ones I saw weren't even close to pace early. The 2:10 half pacer was ahead of the 4:15 pacer by a little bit around mile 4 and the 4:30 pacer was about 3+ minutes ahead at mile 5. It didn't matter to me much since I was doing my own thing but I know others were bothered (I talked to a woman for a mile about it as she wasn't happy!). Course-I know I listed it as a pro but it was also a negative, too. I talked to at least a dozen people in both the half and full and they all asked if it was long. I give any course 1% margin of error from watch to distance. This one was at least double that. It was a training run for me but had I been shooting for a PR, BQ or what have you, I may have been miffed if I missed it by seconds. All in all, it's a decent race with some upside potential.

Good race, on its way to being a great race

I ran Route 66 as part of a two-day double along with the White River Marathon in Mountain Home, AR. Many others were doing the same thing and it would be cool to see the races partner up and offer a reduced entry fee for those running both races. The organization of the race was superb with very good attention to detail. The participant shirt is pretty cheap, but the finisher's shirt is very nice and high quality. The finisher's medal is one of the best out there. The course is challenging with some decent inclines/declines. The town of Tulsa seemed somewhat desolate, as few people turned out for the race; however, the ones who did were great and welcoming. My only complaint is the way in which the half marathon and full marathon merge at two different points on the course. Something needs to be done to alleviate this congestion. Marathoners running 6:30 pace mixing with half marathoners running above 8:00 pace do not mix well. The last mile of the race was very difficult with all of the congestion. All in all, a good race that is still early on in its development. They have a lot more positives than negatives and I suspect this race will continue to improve and grow in the future.

Great race due to excellent organization

The course highlights the city and is a good mix of small hills and turns. This is a great race for first-time marathoners as the organizers go all out to give positive encouragement. However, the jewel of this marathon is the volunteers - the friendliest I have ever seen. This race will grow.

Fantastic event!

I have been training for over 25 years, but have never entered a full, or half. I decided to run the half in Tulsa this year. They did a fantastic job... from the expo with many vendors, to the emails to keep me in the loop. On race day, it seemed as if there were as many volunteers as there were runners! Plentiful water breaks, awesome and happy volunteers, great medal, and great food! Thank you for your great organization, and fantastic course!

Small Marathon with Big-Race Support

Kudos to the people of Tulsa and the Route 66 Marathon organizers. Adding a health fair to your expo was a nice touch. The marathon course itself was well planned. The hilly portion of the course came early in the race, winding through business and beautiful residential areas. There were plenty of turns so I didn't notice the hills much. After that the course leveled out, then there was only wind to contend with. The Tulsa race fans were super. The end of race organization, support and food were top-notch. The roadside car show was an unexpected bonus.

Race seems to improve each year

This is my 2nd Route 66. I wasn't all that excited about running this race this year because I wasn't crazy about the course last year. However, the race organizers, each year, listen to the participants and make changes to improve the experience. I was glad they added the extra 2 miles through the hills (Cascia Hall and Swan Lake), and took two off of the Riverside Drive out-and-back at the end. It seemed like there were a few more spectators this year. Also, the corral start, even for a race this small, was a good improvement. I liked the medal, and I really liked the MC at the finish line. Lots of fun. The finish area around Veterans Park is great. Gives you a place to stretch your legs at the end. I finished early enough this time to get some finisher food, so I was happy about that. The course may have been a little slower this year due to the fierce south wind on the out-and-back. Also, there was some congestion where the half-marathoners merged back with the full marathoners from around mile 15 to mile 17. It was a little bit tricky dodging them. Would be nice to have separate lanes for those two miles. Kudos to the host hotel for allowing a 3:00 p.m. late checkout, but I was disappointed that they didn't have any complementary water, bananas, bagels, etc. for the marathoners. You could buy a bagel at the coffee shop for $2, and it was pretty stale.

Not Bad At All

My second year to run Tulsa. It was a warm and windy day, but no sun, so yea for that. Even with 9K runners, it was easy to get in and and around. Well organized with enthusiastic promoters and volunteers. Good spectators, but I would expect/like more fan support as this young marathon matures. My two suggestions for improvement would be to have a short swing off of the long Riverside leg to break it up, and intersperse a few more water stops in the later miles.

Well run event

A very enjoyable experience in Tulsa. The expo was smooth; the shuttle buses ran from several downtown hotels; there was a great opening; and we ran a good course that covered what there was to see downtown and was "out and back" for the second half. This made it easy on my legs not having to negotiate a lot of turns in the second half - just running into that Oklahoma wind for five miles before turning back for the finish. The course was well marked. Thanks to all of the course support. All of the stations had water and Gatorade, and I had no problem at the finish area regarding medal/finisher shirt pick-up/available food and beverage at the end with a 4:40 finish.

Friendly, organized, and no complaints

This organization sent out emails weekly, so there were no worries about checking into the hotel, picking up packets, or morning shuttle. The run was not boring at all and we knew what to expect with respect to finishing and eating. Very organized and a very friendly city.

Solid race

I disagree with Chicago A.B.; a boring course running through parking lots? Really? This course ran through some predominately scenic areas, historic neighborhoods, new construction of the BOK Center, recently rejuvenated downtown, and finally along the natural Arkansas river lined with unique statues of animals commissioned by Nature Works. The course also presented some minor challenges in hills, so it is not like you ran a race with no elevation change; that would be boring. I would be offended if you called the road that ran next to my $2 million-plus home a parking lot. Having run over 115 marathons across the U.S. from the very small to the largest in the nation, this is a good, well run marathon for its size and one that is relatively new to the marathon calendar. Every year it seems to me the organizers have listened to the participants make both bad and good comments, and have endeavored to make improvements. I urge you to come for the scenic and very marginally challenging course, the medal, and to experience a nice and friendly town. Anything you do not like - outside of telling the millionaires to remodel - I believe attempts will be made to correct.

Great medal, but that's about it

Boring course - mostly out-and-back, running through parking lots and industrial areas. Poor organization. Volunteers were helpful and the medal was worth it!

Tulsa - the new windy city

Excellent marathon. Very hilly the first 13 miles and mostly flat (and very windy) the last 13. Great finisher's shirt and medal. If you are one of the slow marathoners like me (just under 5 hours), don't expect any food at the end of the race. Very limited selections. Long lines at the end of the race for food and shirts. Need better planning for crowd control. Overall an excellent experience. Just bring your own food.

Fun!

This was our first, so please take the info with a grain of salt! We had a blast. The only downside was the host motel and their food service. The corrals worked well for the most part. You have to run around people on every race at the start and this was no different. The expo was great, with a lot of helpful people. The volunteers were amazing and supportive. The course was great. I would call them "grades" - not "hills." We train on a similar course in our neighborhood and were ready for it. I highly recommend this race for people who want to have a fun experience put on by supportive fun people. Well organized!

Very warm and windy, but not race organizers' faul

Very warm, humid, and windy, but that's out of the race organizers' control. This was my second fall marathon this year with temps 15 degrees above average. This seems to be the case with most fall marathons in the middle part of the country this year. When looking up weather facts, it would be best to look up record high temp; and that would be close to race-day temp. Maybe race organizers should start their marathons at 6:30 because of global warming. Anyway, I'm done complaining because late November should be a safe time of year not to be warm. Volunteers and organization of this race were great, but not many spectators. Overall, a well put-together race.

Oklahoma's Best!

I have run the half in Tulsa 3 times and the full marathon once. The Tulsa Route 66 Marathon is a class-act from start to finish. The course is challenging with some hills mainly in the first few miles. The expo is great; packet pickup easy and well organized. The start is also well organized. The finisher's medal last year was awesome, as was the Brooks finisher's shirt, which is provided in women's sizes as well as men's - much appreciated. Pasta dinner is a great place to socialize and visit with other runners, and last year was at the famous Cain's Ballroom.

Overall, a terrific experience

As others have posted below, the first 13 miles are a series of switchbacks through downtown Tulsa. It's very hard to find your bearings as you are constantly turning corners. It's not particularly comfortable on the joints. Once you enter in to the more residential portions of the first half, it becomes easier to settle in for the run even if those who live in the houses you pass wish that you were anywhere but on their streets. At mile 13 you make the turn and run along the river. It's very pretty, but there is no shade and at this point the rough becomes rather tedious. When you turn around and begin the double-back return to the finish line, the rough becomes even more grim. There are very few spectators at this point and the very slight incline in most unwelcoming. The finish at the park was a blast. While there might not have been loads of food, many marathoners were simply hanging out enjoying the sun, free massages, the music, and one another's company. We stayed at the "host" hotel, which had no information regarding the marathon: no info tables, no volunteers the day before, no pasta dinner the night before, no one the morning of race-day even to point runners in the right direction of the starting line. Next year, whichever hotel becomes the host hotel should give some thought to what they are going to provide to their marathon guests. The volunteers were great - warm, welcoming, friendly.

Well done

Volunteers were great. Course shows most of the things worth running past in Tulsa. Finish area is a park. It's nice to be able to lie in the grass with a beer (and plenty was available). Overall, I'm happy to have this race in my home town.

Worth Running

Tulsa is a good smaller marathon. The organization was solid, the people nice and the course not bad (the out-and-back at the end was a bit dull). My only complaint was that I didn't realize the full met back up with the half during the first half. I thought I had goofed up until I saw some marathon bibs. I ran a 3:41 and the only food was sparse pizzas. Not my thing, so I just skipped out and went to my hotel (Hotel Ambassador was awesome and just up the street). I would run it again.

Nice race, friendly people

This was my fist marathon, so I cannot compare my experience to a previous race. Tulsa is a neat community, and the course was scenic. The hills at the start are the best part of the course. I had more trouble mentally with the 13 mile out and back along riverside than I did with the hills. Weather was perfect for most. Starting temps in the 50's. About 65F four hours later. The race seemed well organized, with the exception of the post-race food. I finished in 4:30, and the food tent was completely empty - with a 300-foot-long line of people waiting to eat. Some pizza, I think, showed up later, but not nearly enough. There was food for my friends who ran the half and 5K. I would do it again, but I will plan on bringing an ice chest for something to eat.

Disappointed

I truly loved my experience at the Route 66 Marathon. It was my first marathon and it was amazing. I am very disappointed that someone can go buy my finisher's medal online. I busted my tail for four months, put in the time and effort, paid my dues - physically and financially - only to find out anyone can go buy that medal that I was so proud of. I know that I have the story to tell, but it still tends to devalue the event.

A very well organized race, and I thought the crowd support, volunteers, police, and the community at large were excellent. Be forewarned: you have to hammer out a lot of concrete miles in this race.

mixed review

My boyfriend and I traveled to Tulsa to run the full marathon. It is a small-town feel, and everyone that we met before the race was very helpful for out-of-town racers, giving lots of info and help. We had been warned that there would be lots of hills in the front part of the race. There were some hills, but from our training it was not bad. The hard part was the second half being flat and mainly concrete. The lowest part for us was the use of water from hoses at the aid stations in the second half of the race. I was one of many that used the medical tents for fluids, as the chlorine in the water at the aid stations turned my stomach. The volunteers were wonderful, despite the horrible tasting water they had to offer. They kept cheering you on no matter what. Not sure about the food post-race, as there was a line, so we did not stay to see what was offered. I would say the big fix would need to be the water situation, and then figure out a way to entice more spectators to the back half of the marathon. This race has potential in the years to come. Maybe use a paid perks tent like Little Rock.

Overall: A Quality Marathon

This is the third year in a row that I have run this marathon. Overall, everything was greatly improved. To those with negative comments, keep in mind that this is a relatively new marathon. The new course turned out to be much faster than the old course - I PR'd by more than five minutes. The stretch downtown was great. The miles down and back on Riverside Drive are a little boring, but I have run in several other marathons with stretches that are worse. I saw plenty of porta-johns on the course, and most seasoned runners shouldn't need to stop anyway. The post-race food and beverages were fine when I finished - much better than in the past. I would highly recommend this marathon for anyone hoping to qualify for Boston. It is a very fair course - one you can run negative splits on. Overall, a job well done, Tulsa.

Highly Recommend!

The Route 66 Marathon is well worth a trip to Tulsa. There's so much the organizers do well: awesome medal; two shirts (cotton participant and nice tech finisher; I love the turquoise in the cotton - very unique); a fine, well-organized expo; well-staffed and equipped aid stations; and lots of fan support. The car show at the finish is a nice bonus. A couple of observations and suggestions: The first half of the course is somewhat hilly, while the second half is a pancake-flat out-and-back along the Arkansas River. While it is a nice course, there is a lot of concrete in places and the second half does not have a lot of shade. Also, I would suggest more port-a-potties at the start and along the course. A similar issue exists with parking (a lack of it) at the start, though I understand why they want to begin at Veterans Park. Get there early for a good parking place on the downtown streets. The finisher food did run out, as well, causing us to have to stand in the sun for quite awhile. But all in all, Tulsa is one of the best out there, in my opinion. I highly recommend it as a great marathon value and a totally enjoyable experience.

Cooling to it

I ran this marathon directly after having traveled from the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon in San Antonio, Texas. I would like to say that the City of Tulsa was a good, low-key sort of place. For the four days I was there, it was chilly. The night before, I had to run in a way-out-of-town place in the middle of nowhere - all dark and lonely, with great big lorries speeding by in the dark. Enjoyed the start and the laps around the city, but the long pull down the river and then back up from the 20-mile turnaround was a bit of a grind. All in all, it was okay. That's another state done. Straight after, I went immediately to the airport, and was only able to shower properly at home 19 hours later, having chucked a bottle of water of my body whilst getting changed.

Good event can use some tweaking

This was my 66th marathon/ultra, and 32nd state. PROS: Good race expo and pre-race dinner. Also, getting two shirts is nice, but having all of the sponsors on both is overkill - take them OFF of the finisher's shirt. Great medals; nice touch having name and home city on each runner's bib. The pace teams rock too. CONS: The cement street is hell on your legs. Also, where are the people?? Tulsa has over a million citizens in the metro area; advertise the race and gain more community support. Often I had to energize the crowd with, "Lets hear it, Tulsa!" Downtown is a ghost town on the weekends. I stayed at the Crown Plaza (very nice and good location); however, almost all delis and fast food joints are closed over the weekend. I had to walk far for food. Water stops are consistent: Gatorade first, then water. Each also left 30 feet in between the tables. For only its fourth year, this race is doing well and has plenty of room for growth. Overall grade: B.

Great marathon! You will not be disappointed!

I traveled from Minnesota to Tulsa by car, and would definitely do it again. What a great experience. Tulsa puts on a first-class marathon for everyone. Positives: 1. Course was very fair. It had rolling hills through a gorgeous neighborhood at the beginning. Fun to run through the downtown area. Flat as a pancake from miles 13-26. The last half ran out and back. 2. Loved the food at the finish: Pizza, bagels, Gatorade, pop, beer.... 3. Live band, massage tent, and merchandise tent made for a fun atmosphere after the race. 4. Tulsa really puts on a great race for all runners. Half marathon, relay marathon, 10K - I think - were all races that were going on. 5. I would say the race is a celebration of running. The announcer at the beginning and end was super enthusiastic. They want people to come to Tulsa to run any of the distances and make all people feel welcome. 6. The organization was excellent - one of the best I have attended. 7. Volunteers do a great job at the expo and the race. 8. Really appreciated the medical people on bikes throughout the race. Great idea! Medical tents, and water/Gatorade stations were perfect. 9. Medals are awesome! Wow! Thick, large, colorful! Well done. Really liked the tech finisher shirt and cotton shirt they gave everyone. Only negative I can think of was the wind and sun from miles 13-20. Tulsa can't help that. Part of running. If you are thinking of a smaller race, Tulsa is perfect!

Very nice mid-size marathon

I was very happy with the new course. It seemed like just enough elevation change to keep me interested. To be able to run through downtown Tulsa was cool but my favorite part was the out-and-back along the river. Pizza and beer were great at the finish. The medal is absolutely awesome. Keep it up, Tulsa.

Great Weather

The course meandered through neighborhoods and downtown before hitting the long out-and-back stretch on the river road. It was a scenic stretch, but I was wishing for the turnaround way before it came. I think a veer-off somewhere would be a welcome addition. Medals were very good. The gave out two good shirts: one regular and one tech. Spectators were a little weak, but it's a young marathon.

Hills and Concrete - and Great Volunteers

I did the 2008 marathon on the old course, which had a series of fairly steep hills and drops in the final 10K. It made for a brutal finish. The redesigned course had those hills this year at the beginning and added a few more in the first 20K to make it an even more difficult course. Add to those leg-ripping hills a course that's predominantly run on concrete roads and, well, you have the makings of a painful day and a slew of slow times (except the stroller dudes). I will not do Tulsa again for this reason. The big upside was the many volunteers who made the day a positive experience. Excellent work, Tulsa. Just get rid of the hills and concrete (and the 10K of headwind on the river road!).

Excellent

This was my first trip to Tulsa, OK and the Route 66 Marathon. Almost everything to me was perfect. Excellent course, excellent aid stations, excellent medal, shirts, and processes. Great support

Pros: I was really impressed by the support from the spectators and the medical crews - especially late in the race, as it started getting warm, there were guys on bicycles constantly circling to make sure everyone was OK. Great medal also. Course was as described - not terribly difficult at all. Lots of music along the way. Cons: Post-race food... I don't know, maybe I was looking in the wrong place or something, but all I found in the food tent was cold pizza, bagel pieces and orange slices - and I was ahead of 85% of the marathoners, so who knows what they got? The full/half course split was very clearly marked, but there was way too much traffic when the courses came back together (with 5Kers mixed in too?).

Registration/packet pick up seemed well organized, pasta party seemed like a class act, and I appreciated the confetti and the fireworks at the beginning of the race. Well organized and has good potential

Bottom line: This was a decently run marathon with nothing really standing out as good or bad. The course does a nice job of showing off the city of Tulsa. Pre-race pasta dinner and post-race activities were fairly well done, but also nothing that really stood out as good or bad. This is a good, medium-sized marathon if you are looking for one to do in Oklahoma. Fan support was pretty meager; it almost feels like the city does not realize there's a race going on. Sign-up, website and pre-marathon: Decent website. They do not bug you with a lot training e-mails. Sign up was easy and the information sufficient. Expo: A little underwhelming, but easy to find and efficient number pick-up. There were a pretty small number of booths and there were not any great running deals that I usually hope to find at these race expos. The pasta dinner was at a nice location: the Cain Ballroom. It was pretty standard fare. They had some nice presentations. There was a band that night, but I did not stay. Start: The race ran a shuttle between all of the hotels and they were waiting outside my hotel at 0600. There were plenty of porta-potties, and there was even a trough for the men, which moved really quickly. Baggage check was easy and conveniently located near the start. Course: The first six miles went through some very pretty residential areas. Miles 7 and 8 were on the west side of the river and were a little industrial for my taste. Miles 9-11 went through more of the downtown/entertainment areas. The first 11 miles were mildly rolling hills. The one thing that I did not really like was that around mile 11, the marathoners split from the half-marathoners. But then we rejoined them around mile 12. This was rather annoying both because I could not see the marathoners that I was racing and I was also briefly worried that I was on the wrong course. Miles 11-20 were gradually uphill (and slightly into the wind) along the river. Then you turn around and come back downhill along the river. You get two free beers (although it's a Michelob) and some pizza and oranges. Overall, a decent course that does not really stand out as great, and seems to do a good job of showcasing the city. Water and porta-john stops: water stops were about every two miles and had ample water and Gatorade. Porta-johns were about every three miles or so. Hotel and transportation: I stayed at the Doubletree. The location was great but the price was not the cheapest in Tulsa. The room was nice and they had a great shuttle service that went to the pasta dinner. Support: The volunteers did a great job and I thought the Tulsa Police did a great job with traffic control.

Great weather! Disappointing race.

Where are the toilets? My buddy and I kept uttering this phrase throughout the entire race. Race directors need to address this issue. Water stations were not much better. Some were too close together; others were too far apart. I expected better from the wonderful people of Tulsa, but left town totally unfulfilled. Almost forgot: what's up with the turquoise packet shirts? Weren't the finisher's shirts supposed to be long-sleeved?

Course much improved

My thanks to the race director for the new course. I was one last year who said I probably wouldn't come back if they left those hills at the end. I thought the course through downtown was a nice change. It is the out-and-back along the river that I thought was a little boring. The stretch through the nice neighborhoods at the beginning was scenic and the hills are manageable at that part of the race. This race is getting better each year. Crowd support was good, volunteers great, pasta dinner great. A really neat race atmosphere. Just one nit: last year there were plenty of porta-potties lined up along the course. This year there were hardly any, it seemed, and a line of runners 10-deep was waiting in line.

Tougher course than advertised

Most pre-race comments mentioned the switching of the course this year with gently rolling hills for the first 4-6 miles. The hills are not gentle and they last until 11 miles. You need to do hill work for this marathon or you will feel it later in the race. Probably one of the best, high-quality medals I have got. Nice organization pre- and post-race; it gave the race the feel of a big-city marathon.

Varied course, fair weather

Although the race director cannot control the weather, we've had good luck; this year was very nice: mid 40s at the start, it didn't get over 65, there was a slight breeze, and it was sunny. Being a local, I was already familiar with the course. The hills are rolling and not overly taxing; and Riverside is completely flat. I was most impressed with the aid stations, and attention to us by the cyclists. I was very disappointed with the spectator support through the Maple Ridge area, but very happy with all of the crowd support down Riverside. There was lots of photography, so I can't wait to see how many pictures I have to choose from! It was most disappointing to finish the race and have very little food - only water, pizza, orange slices and bagel crumbs. I've run marathons in 3 other cities - OKC, KC and Dallas - and this has not happened. If we want to be world-class, we need to improve on this. I finished in 4:54, which is early enough to still have food. I liked the order of pick-up after the race; there weren't logjams in the shirt pick-up, or in having your chip removed. There was a long line for the pizza. The last thing a runner wants to do is stand around and have their muscles tighten up. The medals are really pretty and even have lettering on the back.

I highly recommend running the Tulsa Marathon!

Run Tulsa! You will not be disappointed. After having run Chicago a month ago, it was a great experience running Tulsa. Positives: 1. The organization is superb and they really want to put on a first-class event. 2. Pre- and post-race were well done. Music: live bands, great food, message tents, merchandise, pop, Gatorade, beer... top-notch all the way around. 3. Announcer at the start and finish! Great job - awesome enthusiasm. 4. Professional photographers everywhere! You will get some really great pictures of yourself! 5. Awesome medal! Wow! The heaviest and the biggest I have. Finisher tech shirt and cotton shirt are exceptional. 6. Southern hospitality! I really appreciated how nice the volunteers were. Everyone is so friendly and helpful. I liked the medical staff on the course riding their bikes! Very nice and caring. Thanks. 7. The first 13 miles are very enjoyable. Great neighborhood over miles 4-9 or so. Wow, cool homes. I thought the downtown section was good too. Miles 13-20 were flat as a pancake along the river, and then a turnaround to come back. If not for the strong headwind and sun smack in your face, I thought it would have been great. 8. I really liked seeing the first two finishers pushing the strollers. Out-and-backs are nice in that you can get an opportunity to see the elite runners. Wow, 2:35 pushing a stroller with a child - incredible. 9. Nice, ice-cold water bottles at the end. I have been in some marathons where the water is lukewarm. Yuck! 10. Great sound system at the start and finish. 11. Really enjoyed talking to the cop from Edmund, OK who was running his first marathon; Chris from Sweden; and the guy and his wife running their 172nd marathon. Thanks for chatting! 12. I thought having the relay, half-marathon, and 5K is a great idea for Tulsa. It is really a race about participating and getting everyone involved. Even though it is a small race - 3,000 runners or so - there are runners everywhere doing the different distances. Negatives: Ummm... yeah, I mentioned the wind and sun. I can't complain. Turning around at the 20-mile mark was like winning the lottery. If you are thinking of running a race in November, I would definitely run Tulsa. I drove from Minnesota and it was worth every mile of it. Thanks, Tulsa!

2009 course much better!

The pasta party seemed like a class-act at the historic Cains Ballroom, and the food was good. I would have loved some dessert though. I loved the confetti and the fireworks at the beginning of the race! The hills in the first half of the course were fine, if you were cautious. I loved the bands and appreciated the ones near the Route 66 overpass and the Cains Ballroom. It was also nice to have the DJs along the route playing upbeat music. Riverside seemed desolate at times, but the crowd at the finish line was great.

Great weather and wonderful spectators

I was running late coming from a small town in OK. I parked at a gas station and had to run about a mile to the start. I was still on the bridge when the gun went off, but that's ok because my pacesetter had not started yet. This was my first half marathon and I was very pleased; when I felt like stopping, there was always a spectator saying, "You can do it!" I enjoyed the weather and the course, and the food and beer at the end were great. It was awesome to cross the finish line close to the stroller winner. I will definitely run in Tulsa again.

Enjoyable Day

The 2009 Route 66 Marathon was a great day. The weather was perfect and the atmosphere was wildly exciting. The stroller world record was fun to be a part of. The course was moderately boring. Downtown Tulsa is not overly excited. The second half of the marathon along the river was nice. Big kudos to the medical staff; they were able to stretch me out and get me back running after the worst hamstring cramp I have ever endured. All in all, a good time and a marathon worth running - the medals were huge and the finishers were nice.

Good Course, But Post-Race Suffered

This was my first half, but the course was awesome. No shuttle was available, as advertised from the hotels, so I had a great warm up by sprinting 2 miles to the start line about 4 minutes before the gun. I finished in 1:58, and moved through the chute for food and beer. To my surprise, the beer had been finished, there was a 45-minute wait for burgers, and there was no pizza. Tulsa could have hit a grand slam if food and beverage were available. If you're not going to have it, don't advertise it. Hopefully '09 will improve on the athlete condiments, or we can tailgate post-race.

Well Done

I was very impressed with the organization. The volunteers were all exceptionally nice. At about mile 18 we encountered a man who was struggling with leg cramps. One of the volunteers offered him water and some food. He (the volunteer) ran all the way back to the aid station and then ran back to catch up with the man who had continued on. I was impressed!

Great Spectator Support

Thanks to all of the friendly folks from Tulsa who came out to support the runners. This was definitely the right time of year for a race, as the weather could not have been better and the enthusiasm was contagious. Frankly, the course was boring - 20 miles were mostly out and back, with a nice climb through the neighborhoods in the last 6 miles (boy, that was cruel hill placement). I do like to see where I am going and that endless stretch of concrete was lacking in visual appeal. I echo the previous comments about organization.... After 26.2 miles, I feel I earned my beer. There was no reason to run out. Putting up signs for shuttle drop off/pick up would have been very nice. Fortunately, the shuttle driver saw me rapidly waddling to catch up and waited for me. Signs indicating where various post-race services could be found also would have been helpful. A side note: Oklahoma apparently has small burrs in the grass.... I found this out the hard way when I sat on a curbside lawn to treat a blister. Talk about motivation applied to the glutes. Be wary where you sit.

It was okay

Tulsa was my 8th marathon. I finally decided to embark on the 50 state quest, and this one fell on a weekend that I was free. So off to Tulsa I went. I could summarize the marathon - and, actually, the entire weekend - with one word: Meh. For the most part, it was a well-organized race. My only complaints are at the finish. The entrance to the food tent was a zoo. The last thing I wanted to do after running 26.2 miles was to stand around in line for 10 minutes before I could leave the finish chute. Also, I was disappointed that the beer was gone. I finished in 4 hours, so there were still a lot of people behind me. That was poor planning. But otherwise, it was well organized. Crowd support was sparse. Many of the people who did line the course were sitting on their hands. I don't really NEED crowd support - I don't have a cheering section on my training runs - but a little more life would have been nice. As for the course, I seem to be in the minority here; I didn't particularly like it. We ran alongside the Arkansas River, but we were far enough away from it that you couldn't see it for most of the time. I found the out-and-back stretch to be rather boring. And it's a looooong stretch. I won't complain about the hills, because we all knew about them going in. In fact, because the hilly part was in a nice section of town with some nice houses, it was actually my favorite part of the course. So while there wasn't much wrong with the race, there wasn't a whole heck of a lot to hang your hat on, either. My opinion would be that if you're doing the 50 state thing and need to cross Oklahoma off your list, then Tulsa is fine to accomplish that. But if you're looking for an fun or exciting race, then you could probably do better. And if you do go to Tulsa, don't stay at the Doubletree (host hotel) if you want entertainment. The hotel itself was fine. But the neighborhood around the hotel downtown apparently shuts down on the weekend. There was NOTHING to do in that area for 48 hours. No restaurants, bars, etc. Heck, I couldn't even find a fast food restaurant for a bite to eat. If you're looking for a fun area, stay somewhere else and arrange your own transportation to the start/finish line....

upon further review...

I commented previously and complained about the lack of beer. Reading it now it sounds too negative. Heck, I can buy my own beer. It was really well done. The 5-hour pacers (11:27 mile) got behind their pace and ran mile 11 or 12 in 9 minutes to catch up (their chip splits confirm this), leaving everyone they were with. In their defense, I'm not sure what they should have done once they realized they were so behind. But I had my watch, so I could live without the pacers. Again, I don't want to be negative; it was a great marathon.

Good overall race, so-so course

The expo, pasta dinner, shirts and medal were all very well done. Everything was very well planned, except the shuttle (was there only one?) back to the hotel. It was impossible to find the location of the return shuttle; there were no signs and I finally found it a block and a half away, marked by a sign that said it was the relay shuttle. Trying to find a race volunteer to answer the question while runners were still coming in was difficult. The hotel is a long way away - too far to walk. The hills are steep and long, and at a difficult place. Not fun. It presents a real dilemma. If you go too hard, you have nothing left for the hills. No one was running up the hills - everyone was walking except the 4:15 pace group leaders, who through the first hill lost everybody. If you save up for the hills (go slower up to then), I really doubt you could make up the time, and you will still be walking most of the way by the time you hit the bad hill in the park. The rest of the course is nice. I probably won't return to this one even though it is only three hours from home, unless they reverse the course.

nicely done, but where's my beer?

Nice course for Tulsa. I would prefer the river trail, not road, but there's no way to enforce making people do the trail bends and not short-cut them, so the road is the best choice. I liked the hills at the end, but my right hip is still killing me from the severely cambered concrete road the last couple miles. They gave us beer tickets this year, but to no avail, as they were long gone by the time the slower marathoners got there. Is it so hard to bring as many beers as you gave out tickets for? You can take extras back, right?

Incredibly Well-Organized Marathon

The best organized "small marathon" that I have run. There were an incredible number of supportive volunteers made this a pleasure to run. From the registration desk to the aid stations, everyone was very helpful. The course was well laid out and marked; there were many clocks throughout the course; there were a good number of well-manned aid stations; and there were supportive spectators. They even provided a Red Sox fan as starter/announcer, which was an unexpected premium. I would strongly recommend this race. Great job!!

Course was well laid out

I was very impressed with the race expo. It was well laid out. I was able to donate three pairs of my old running shoes. The course was incredible. It ran along the Arkansas River. I was worried about the 8 a.m. start and the heat, but the weather turned out great. Would I travel down to Oklahoma to run it again? Hell yeah!!!

Effective organization; good, small marathon

My 16th start, and 13th finish. Thoroughly enjoyed everything about the race except the course. Typically out-and-back courses or "modified" out-and-back courses are boring and fast. The run along the river provides a nice setting for running out and back. Beautiful neighborhoods into downtown for the finish. However, the hills through the neighborhoods between miles 22-25 were at a bad place in the race and advertising made them sound insignificant. They were not. I suspect the position of the hills in the race slows everyone's times, including the winners (by several minutes, if not more). I recommend running the course in reverse.

A Great Event - Don't Miss It!

Although I participated in the quarter marathon, I've run in enough of these to know the real deal and this is one of them. Just the fact that you are running along the famous "Route 66" is enticing enough, but I enjoyed everything about this race. The logistics are wonderful with the expo right across the street from the host hotel, The Doubletree, which gave runners a checkout as late as 3:00. The expo was very decent with good guest speakers and a fair amount of vendors. The pasta dinner was right there in the expo hall, making it very convenient. One of the best perks is the start time. The full marathoners started at 8:00 and the half and quarter marathoners started at 9:00, which was a wonderful start time and certainly welcome since it was a cold brisk morning. The later start time really helped out temperature wise which was such a benefit. Also, there were free shuttle buses to take you to and from the race although it was such a pretty day that I walked back to the host hotel, which was just over one mile. Great music at the start line was just what we needed to get going (Michael Jackson's "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough" and Rihanna's "Please Don't Stop The Music" is enough to get anybody warmed up and ready to go!) Great volunteers, great organization and great communication from the race director clear up to the day before the race all helped to make this a special event all the way around. If you are a 50-stater and need to get an Oklahoma race completed, look no further - Tulsa is the one you want to do. Thanks to Chris and all of the volunteers who helped make this such a wonderful event!

A Terrific Race

Tulsa has a marathon it can be proud of. Great organization and a unique Route 66 theme to the race. The marathon route is just about the best a mainly out-and-back route can be. A beautiful, flat, scenic course along the Arkansas River lined with parks, art sculpture and beautiful homes. The only thing that stops me from rating it a five-star course is due to the concrete roads along Riverside Dr. So I would recommend wearing a good pair of cushioned shoes, rather than lightweight trainers or racers. How that guy who ran the marathon in bare feet did it, I can't imagine. I didn't mind the hills at the end after all of the flat miles before; it changed the muscle tension and the scenery. Great volunteers, good bands, cheerful spectators and lots of potta-potties on the course. A great medal design. Cotton t-shirt for entering and a tech finisher shirt. Seems there was plenty of pizza, fruit and cookies at the end this year. Only problem was the line for burgers slowed everything up. They need an express grab-and-go line for the ready made food and a separate line to wait for burgers (or get some more grills going) next year. Thanks to everyone who put together a first-class event.

My 50th marathon and a winner!

Ideal cold weather for running. Mostly flat course, except for hills between miles 23-25 - a unique challenge that makes the finish even sweeter. Several nice big-race perks without the big-race hassle: race clocks every mile, nice entertainment along the course, pace groups, well stocked aid stations, two shirts (cotton participant and tech finisher), wonderful race medal, lots of friendly volunteers, excellent course control, efficient bag check, the list goes on and on. One warning is that a large portion of the course is run on a concrete road surface, not asphalt, so make sure to wear good cushioned shoes. Also, the lines at the food tent seemed quite long (there are half and quarter marathon events too) so I didn't bother getting any post-race food. No biggie for me, though, as I'd packed food in the bag I checked.

Nice, small race

Weather was perfect. Course was nice, although a path closer to the river (rather than road) would have been nice. Be prepared for hills near the end; great downhill finish. Lots of food (even hamburgers!) at the end (but no beer for 4:50 finishers). Nice expo; lots of volunteers along course. Host hotel (Doubletree) has 3:00 checkout! Met lots of 50-staters.

user friendly

Tulsa is not the most exciting place in this country, but is user friendly. Not a lot to do in Tulsa, but the people are very nice and try to be helpful. The race course is not very exciting, but it is runner friendly in that the boring out-and-back along the river is flat and the hilly end has a lot to look at. The organizer's know their job, and while the expo and pasta party were not spectacular, they did have everything you needed without being exciting. The spectators were there - not too many, but there were enough in general to make you feel that you were not all alone and forgotten. The entertainment was not overboard, but was enough to make you feel that the organizers cared to keep you interested and entertained. Nothing about this race will overwhelm you, but you will not walk away disappointed by it either. It is not Chicago, but it is also not Huntington. This race has just enough of everything without making you overly impressed but does not leave you disappointed either. The organizer go out of their way to accommodate you but did not have enough beer or food at the end. It was an interesting touch to have hamburgers and cheeseburgers at the end, but were they really needed at 11:00 a.m. after finishing a marathon. Concentrate on better bagels, snack bars and BEER. In general, a pleasant race to run in Oklahoma, but do not expect to be overwhelmed by the event.

boring course

On Route 66, you do a huge out-and-back that makes up the majority of the mileage. The last 4 are in downtown Tulsa - and all hills. The volunteers were good, but there was very little crowd support. There was only 1 food stop during the race, and I stopped at 2 aid stations and asked for Advil, and nether had anything. There was very little food and no beer left when I crossed the finish line. (I placed in the upper half of finishers.) I think this has the potential of being a great race, but they really need to work on supporting the runners. They did have great shirts and my medal was very nice!

Hitting on most cylinders

Excellent marathon. It had a very good course (with a few hills right at the end through an older interesting neighborhood). I liked the run along the Arkansas River. They had interesting wildlife statuary ~ every 1/2 mile (?). Well-stocked, well-run aid stations. OK race t-shirt during packet pick-up, followed by an excellent tech finisher's t-shirt at the end! Cool medal. Minimal spectators (just a few friends or family members out supporting their friend/family runners). Only question is why it's the Route 66 Marathon when it only goes 5% on an uninteresting part of Route 66. Still, not sure going on more of Route 66 would be a course improvement. Excellent post-race food... even with a relatively slow time there was still pizza and delicious grilled hamburgers (I understand the faster finishers had a long line to get post-race food). Smaller, convenient Tulsa airport and hotel shuttle made for easy travel logistics.

Of three fall marathons I ran, this was the best.

I enjoyed this marathon. I knew there might be some problems (there were, no food at finish), but overall it was a good race. The course was out-and-back, with some interesting scenery and variety. There were actually spectators along the course and I can see that increasing with the next races. There seemed to be a festive air about this marathon, more so than some of the other smaller marathons I had run earlier. The host hotel was great, with a good location - and the same for the expo. I found a Spaghetti Warehouse restaurant across the railroad tracks from downtown. Very good. A local had recommended that. I would do this again, but I still have others to states to conquer. Good luck to the organizers. I think this race has very good growth potential. Hey, I really liked the flashy finisher shirts and awesome medal. The best! Saw lots at the airport next morning!

My first half; will definitely do again!

Like others have added, the hills in the last few miles were a challenge, especially for a girl who is used to the flat terrain of Amarillo. I grew up in Tulsa, so it was nice to go back and run through the streets of my youth. Great memories. Although there wasn't a large number of spectators, the ones that were there were fantastic and very supportive, especially in the neighborhoods. Loved the OU fans (BOOMER!). Plenty of water and Accelerade at the stations. Overall, I was happy this was my first half. Not too large, but not too small either. Will be back.

Commenting on just the positives

This was my 10th and last marathon (retiring to the shorter distances). My original marathon swan song was to be, believe or not, the Beirut Lebanon Marathon, but 6 weeks before the start I bailed and had to find an alternative. The Tulsa Route 66 looked intriguing and the race director's prompt return of my email questions made me sign up. The preceding runners' comments are pretty accurate so I will just add the positive comments: -expo was easy to get around in and had the usual merchandise plus a couple of pretty good speakers. -the volunteers everywhere were great and made the race run smoother than I run. My 4:15 pacer was pretty upbeat all race. -there were a few bands that were actually better than the bands I have seen in other races. -the weather was great (mind you I'm a Canadian and have trained in all types of weather). About 50F (10C) at the start and maybe 68F (20C) at the finish and cloudy. -pasta dinner was fun with interesting table mates and speakers. (Note there are very few places to eat downtown.) -course has enough turns and diversions so it doesn't get boring (no comments on those hills). -organization was very good - better than last year's Philadelphia. -fellow runners were friendly, although it seemed that at least 50% were those 50 State crazies! Thanks again, Route 66.

First time - best time

This was my first marathon, and I'm so happy that I made it. I'm the guy that wrote the column Dec. 3 in the Tulsa World. I was the next-to-last person to cross the finish line, so I didn't expect there to be any food left. But my foot started hurting terribly around Mile 9, forcing me to walk. It never stopped hurting, and I was hoping for some med help at the end. They had all packed up by then, though. But other than that, I loved it. I knew about the hills, and drive on the concrete streets every day, so they weren't as big a concern for me.

Good Job, Tulsa

I love Tulsa. I've run all the big races... Chicago, Boston, Marine Corps, etc., but still enjoy the feeling of the smaller races. The positives: Very well run, and friendly folks in the fine city. Negatives: I am never a fan of out-and-back courses. Also, the medal is kind of boring. Not that I run for the medal, of course.... I will be back.

Great race! Post-race area disappointing....

For my first marathon, and a very good race. The weather was PERFECT! I really enjoyed the scenery and the course layout and even running in the hills toward the end. Certainly a very positive experience for me but... ...the post-race arrangement was a big disappointment. I ran a slow pace and finished at 5 hours so maybe I shouldn't expect much, but many of my friends said the same thing and they came in around 4 hours. Little to no food and no beer available. With all the half and relay marathoners finishing earlier, there was no hope of the majority of the marathon finishers to enjoy the food/drink that was highly advertised. Frankly, I looked forward to it and it wasn't there. I hope the race organizers will address and find a way to correct the problem. Except for this, the race was great!! The route, expo, hydration stations, and especially the shirts were outstanding. I will definitely have this on my calender for next year.

Marathoners get the leftovers

I can understand the need for these smaller marathons to diversify and have more events to create a bigger buzz in the community. In this case, unfortunately, it seems like the marathon runners got ignored in favor of runners in the shorter events. The expo on Saturday was ok (what I expected from a race this size - mostly local companies or organizations). The one disappointment was there was no race poster offered for sale; other marathons I've been to have had an official poster. Race day conditions were almost perfect. Parking near the start area was easy to find, and I was able to move through crowds easily to get water and warm up, and there were no long lines for porta-toilets. The course was ok. Nice loop over river to start, and then out and back on the parkway along river. Got a bit monotonous at times, but the course entertainment (bands) every few miles helped break up the boredom, and the volunteers did a great job handing out drinks and cheering us along. Had isolated clumps of spectators, then long stretches with not much out there except the occasional biker riding the path along the parkway. The hills in miles 22-25 were tough, especially coming through the park, but that part of the course was probably the most visually stimulating and had plenty of spectators as ran through the neighborhoods. The bad part was there were a half marathon, quarter marathon, AND marathon relay. The half and quarter marathoners started an hour later, which meant that most of them were back at the finish before the marathoners. I finished in the top 100 in the marathon and would have liked to have gotten something to eat, but there must have been 200 people in line at the food tent by that time. Guess all the half/quarter marathoners and their friends were hungry. Judging from other comments, I should consider myself lucky there was some beer left after the hordes of locusts had passed through. It would be nice if the race organizers had a little more consideration for the people running the full marathon and set aside some food and beer for those arriving later in the day - maybe that'll happen in future events.

Great Race

The organization for this race was excellent. I signed up early (in June) and received emails all summer and fall with updates and info about the run. I knew exactly where to go and when to be there by the time race weekend came. I participated in the half marathon last year and will say that I like the new start finish area compared to last year. Although, I was very disappointed that most of the food was gone and the beer trailer had already shut down. I finished just under 4:30 and was really looking forward to a slice or two of pizza and a cold beer at the end. I had to settle for an orange and a bottle of water. They tweaked the course last year based on feedback from runners and the community so maybe they'll work on it again for next year and not have so much of the course on Riverside Drive. It definitely gets monotonous, especially after the turnaround and you're coming back on the same road you just ran on. But, enough complaining. This is a great race and if they make sure that the 1/4 and 1/2 marathoners save some pizza and beer for the full marathoners, then I'll be totally happy. That is why I run after all, for the free beer and pizza!

Good Marathon. Poor Post Marathon.

The Tulsa Marathon was mostly out and back on flat cement along the river. It got a tad boring. The fan and volunteer support was fantastic especially for a smaller race. The last few miles were hilly and enjoyable. They weren't that bad. Besides its hard to complain when the hills are clearly there in the elevation chart of the race. Two gripes, one big one small. Small Gripe: I didn't find a good map to the race start. Big Gripe: My wife finished in 4:05, I finished in 4:30. There was only Mazzios pizza. No Beer, no other food as had been touted online and in flyers. My guess is that the half marathoners got it all. BAD Deal. I know I wasn't the only one disappointed. That said. I'm sure it will be remedied next year. Right? The medal was nice and the shirts are nice - short and long sleeve tech shirts.

A very good race that can get even better

This was my 11th marathon and this was one of the better ones I've run. It still has some minor things that can be tweaked to make it great race though. Yes there is a lot of concrete and there are some hills miles 22-25 but the rest of the course is very flat. The size of the race did not leave the course crowded. Don't expect a lot of spectators but most of the ones lining the roads are energetic. It's also a good course for your family or friends to follow you. Getting two technical shirts (one race and one finishers) is virtually unheard of. Beats the heck out of the shrunken cotton tee I got at another race. Here's what I think can be improved. I ran a 4:06 but there was not a lot of food left at that point. It was mostly some rice & beans with seasoned chicken along with some cold pizza and bagels. Also, someone needs to remind the aid station volunteers to be consistent with water and sports drink arrangements. As I approached each AS I would hollar out 'WATER' but it seemed to be all over the place and sometimes the sports drink seemed to come before the water. No other real complaints.

Great race... what a pleasant surprise!

Candidly, I registered for Route 66 when I waited too late to sign up for Philadelphia (which was the same day), but I won't view Tulsa as a "second choice" again. This was my 22nd marathon, and at age 49, I presumed my PR days were over. Was I ever wrong! The course, even with a lot of concrete, was very forgiving. I got into a good groove early on and really never slowed down until the hills late in the race. The aid stations were well organized and the volunteers were energetic and cheerful. And spectators along the way got into the act, as well, offering fruit and water (and a lot of encouragement!). The on-course entertainment, I thought, was a little sporadic but so what? It's like that in a lot of races I've run. The (mostly) downhill final mile was certainly welcome, and I cruised in with a new PR, by a whopping 4-and-a-half minutes! The technical-fabric finisher's shirts were nice, too, although I kind of wished the design more prominently featured the word "marathon" under the trademark Route 66 emblem (but, hey, I'm being picky). This was a great race, and I thought really well put together. It may not be too high just yet on many runners "to-do" lists, but that is going to change. This is just year number two for this race (I think), and it's already a fine event (and I've run Boston, NYC, L.A., Chicago...). No, Route 66 isn't a mega-event, but it's a whole lot of fun and it is a perfect race for the first-time marathoner. I guess I should have registered for Philly sooner, but now I'm really glad I didn't...!

Great Race

The course was excellent and the volunteers were even better. I ran with bronchitis, which made the second half hard for me. I was walking in suspense, fearing that I was going to be ordered up onto the sidewalk at anytime. The course was re-opened to traffic around me but an officer stayed with me till the end and helped me through the intersections for the last 2 miles. The police department was very supportive of the event and welcomed all of the runners to their city. This is a marathon that I will DEFINITELY do again after I finish my tour of the 50 states. The organizers did a great job.

Nice, but could be better

Overall, I think the Tulsa Route 66 Marathon is a decent choice for a race, but clearly could be improved. The city: Tulsa is nice enough city with some very well maintained older neighborhoods. The expo was easy to get to and offered lots of vendors, even though there were few "freebies." We ate an an Italian restaurant called Biga (I believe it was in the area called "Brookside") and the food was excellent. The course: Much of the race is run along the Arkansas River. You're not going to see a hill until you're past 20 miles, except for maybe a slight incline while running over a bridge. I found the long stretch on Riverside Dr. to be excessive. It became quite boring running back up the same road and I really looked forward to turning off this road and moving into some of the neighborhoods. Once you reach about the 22-mile mark in the race, you come to the hills. I've read some of the other comments about how difficult these hills are, and I don't agree. I'm a 4 1/2-hour runner in my 50's and usually hills just kill me in a race. These hills are challenging, but they are definitely doable. This was the first marathon I did not walk at all and the hills did not stop me. The aid stations along the course were well organized and volunteers made it easy to find what I wanted. The finish: Volunteers wrapped me in a mylar blanket, cracked open a bottle of water for me, and place the medal around my neck. Got my finisher's shirt, which was very nice (both the participant and finisher shirts were very classy), and then set out to find the beer and some food. There was very little food; I got a small cup of some rice, beans and chicken that was very tasty, but there was little else. And the biggest disappointment: they ran out of beer awhile ago. Also, if you're coming here intrigued by the "Classic Car Show," don't bother. There were just 5 or 6 cars parked along the street that appeared to be classic. This was not anything special at all.

Well Organized; Great Police Interaction

Great organization. Cloud cover was great too. Liked the shotgun start, and the announcer was entertaining. I agree with previous comments on concrete and hills at the end; but overall the course was not that bad. One noticeable item for me was the friendliness and involvement of the police. The gave words of encouragement and some even applauded. The guys between 24 and 25 were especially good. The two technical tops were a special treat. Nice job, especially given this was only your second year.

Great marathon but could have been better

This was my first marathon, and for some strange reason I was told it was a fairly flat course and that there was less concrete this year. How could there have been less concrete?? There had to be at least 15-18 miles of concrete. At the expo the race director said that there was only a few rolling hills at the end. Ha... more like 5 miles of hills and they were not small, rolling hills. The water stops were all well staffed and the volunteers were excellent. There were times I would have liked to have seen a water stop sooner, but it was ok. The crowd support at the beginning of the race was great, but after the turn-around it was like everyone left town. After finishing, I got one piece of pizza. All the other food was gone! Even though I wasn't fast finishing (just over 5 hours), it would have been nice to have gotten some of the finisher's food and drink. Maybe next year they could save some food for the full marathoners. The people that were out there the longest are the ones that would have appreciated it the most. I won't do this one next year but will return again to try it someday. Overall it was a great experience for my first marathon.

Good Half Marathon!

Overall a good race. This was my first half marathon. I thought the organization was outstanding. The course was mostly flat until the end, but the hills were pretty tough (thankfully I train on hills), but I saw many halfers walking in the final few miles because of the hills. I did not go to the food tent, so no comment there, but plenty of potties at the start and along the route, plenty of volunteers, course was CLEARLY marked and I liked the clocks at every mile marker. I will probably be back next year.

A-1 Organization

This was one of the best in the 21 marathons I have run. The volunteers were superb. Tulsa knows hospitality. The Radisson Airport Inn was very accommodating for late check-out and priced fairly. The support stations did well. Finishing at 4:31, I was really disappointed that there was no food available at the end, though promised. The first shirt and the finisher's shirt was impressive, along with a very nice medal. The older race organizations could take lessons from Tulsa's planning committee of two years. I would recommend this race to anyone, including first-timers and P.R. seekers. Thanks for a great experience.

Wonderful Course.

The organization for this marathon was absolutely the best. Great course with some hills towards the end but plenty of support on the course and lots of hydration stations, especially in the last 6-7 miles where they were needed. Good expo - not so big that we got lost. We received our race shirt and another shirt at the finish line, with a great medal. My long weekend stay in Tulsa was fabulous - everyone was so friendly and helpful. This is a must-run marathon

Not bad for a young race; room for improvement.

Plus: Well organized, nice scenery, and great volunteers. Cons: All concrete course, Accelerade sucks (switch to PowerAde or Gatorade please!), tech shirts were all way too big for female runners, and need hotel shuttles.

Great Marathon

This was my second marathon this year, and it was a great course. The weather was perfect and the water stops were well stocked. The oranges at the halfway point were AWESOME! Along Riverside the spectators were few and far between - I could have used some encouragement around mile 16. :) I LOVED the group playing the bagpipes on one of the intersections! I was a little disappointed that there was no food left at the end (five hour marathoner), but a worker was graciously cutting oranges for some of us who needed a post-race boost. Thankfully Tulsa has some great restaurants and they don't mind you coming in looking like, well, you've just run a marathon. :) Great experience!!

Great Marathon! Course, food, shirts... everthing!

Tulsa was my 48th marathon. I'm a 60-year-old Clydesdale (207 lbs). I got a BQ at Tulsa and a BQ the previous weekend at the Chickamauga Battlefield Marathon in North Georgia. My point is this: the Tulsa Marathon course does have some long stretches of concrete and several hills near the end, but it is "doable," as evidenced by my BQ finish time. I don't understand some previous comments about "no" food. I finished in 4 hours and there was still pizza, beer, and lots of other food/goodies in the food tent. The two shirts are great. The medal is excellent. Good job, Tulsa! I would definitely do this one again.

Thanks for the Hills!

I usually have to walk some in the last 5 miles, so you provided my focus - walk the inclines and run the flat and downhill sections! HELL on the quads, but GREAT on the psyche! Tulsa Route 66 was #37 in my ongoing quest for 50 states + DC, and it ranks top 5 in city marathons. Expo was WELL DONE, with good variety and local vendors. We bought 2 pairs of NB shoes, socks, gloves (though unneeded), a medal display board, tech shirt Christmas gifts, and nifty headbands - all at GREAT PRICES! Saturday, while out "checking out" the course, we discovered TREK bicycle reps at the end of 41st street setting up hour-long FREE rides on BRAND NEW TREK racers on the bike path ! In all of our marathon travels we have found no hospitality quite as good as in the Midwest. Thanks so much to all of the WONDERFUL volunteers and the race directors for your laborious efforts. There was plenty of beer waiting when I finished in 4:06:15 and my wife in 4:34; the beer was on ice back at the Double Tree with no charge for late checkout - now that's a host hotel. Best wishes for a long and successful series of marathons. I will wholeheartedly recommend this race to all runners looking for a race to ENJOY!

Another great marathon, Tulsa

The weather was great. Volunteers were superb. The route was good, until those hills at the end.... There actually were more spectators than last year, so keep encouraging people to be on the sides of the streets! Maybe The Tulsa World could run an article next year, letting people know that many runners appreciate some noisy support along the route. The 2 shirts are marvelous, but could the word "FINISHER" be larger on future shirts? The medal is really great. I like this year's larger medal size. I agree with other postings that the route should be reversed. We'll still run up and down lots of hills, but it won't be at the end. I liked the better route through Jenks. Three improvements: make a family meeting area in the park by posting letter signs (A,B,C...) in a large circle, or in two straight lines, on poles. This works at other marathons. Put a very clear route map in the goody bag. Get some more food for the finishers. Lots more. Thanks, Tulsa, for another great marathon. I did not post my best marathon time, but I had fun. I will be back in future years.

Enjoyable Running Atmosphere

There were a tremendous number of positives for me regarding this marathon. The organization was very good, with very helpful and pleasant volunteers. I am so thankful those folks take a day out of their life to be there for us runners. I am very impressed with the two shirts - and what a medal! I have no problem paying what I did to get a finisher's shirt of the quality that were being handed out. It was an added bonus to get the participant shirt as well. And I can't figure out why other marathons don't separate the 1/2 marathon start from the marathon start. What a pleasant, stress-free start. The course elevation map is true - it is virtually flat for the first 22.5 miles. I'm not serious racer, but at 200 lbs, I'm happy I can run a 3:30 marathon. The hills at the end are very challenging. I wouldn't know about running up them since I ended up walking at mile 22 through 25. Although the course is flat, you run on the right side of the road for the first 15 miles, which is crowned. Thus, could cause a knee or hip pain due long repetition of running on an uneven surface without a change. Then you get about a two-mile break running back on the same side, but then switch over to the right side again from about miles 17 through miles 21 or 22. I didn't realize how bad it was until I check out my shoes afterward and noticed the left shoe heel had worn down on the outside lip to half the size of my right shoe heel, which is a lot! This explained why my left knee and hip were killing me. The fans were great - although not terribly numerous, there were some characters, especially the guy with three girls at the top of the last hill at mile 24.5, extremely animated about encouraging me and others to run up that last hill. Even at about 4 hours he was still going for us. Tulsa has a somewhat-small-town feel and the people were great. I would recommend folks run this marathon. My only suggestion would be looking at how you can balance the course to be more friendly to the body due to the crowning of the roads. Would I do it again? You bet; I would love to try to run up those hills at the end! Keep the hills at the end; it adds character to this race. Never mind those who want the hills over at mile 2 or 3 - many of us don't warm up until mile 3.

I'll be back for more!

Tulsa knows how to do a marathon right! The organization was great, the tech shirts are so much better than the sweatshirts last year, the support stations were excellent, and the bands were really good this year too (loved the kid at the Jenks Bridge with his trap set!!)! The hills in the last few miles were tougher than I expected, but the decline on Cherry Street was great compared to last year's uphill finish. Riverside, coming back into Tulsa, was lonely - I would have loved more spectators there, but most were probably complaining about the traffic problems we marathoners caused! I was disappointed with the finish line food tent - did all the 1/4's eat the food or what? I never even saw the beer. But it was a great day for a race. I asked for snow after the heat in Chicago, but the cool cloud cover was perfect! I will be back every year for this race, bringing as many Texans as I can back home with me!!

Overall, a good race

This was my first marathon, and overall it was a great experience. They advertise a "mostly flat" course, which means that it's totally flat until about mile 20 and after that it's extremely hilly. Luckily, the last part is downhill. The volunteers were very supportive, and they had plenty of water and sports drink. There were hardly any spectators on the course, though. The fruit near the halfway point was a nice touch, especially since they were out of food at the finish line by the time I got there (around the 5-hour mark). Suggestion for next year: offer shuttles to and from area hotels.

great first marathon

This was my first, and I thought it was good. I didn't care about the food at the finish, and they had plenty to drink. The volunteers were great - very encouraging. The ones at the finish were so nice; they put the blanket and medal on me, and even cracked the top on the water bottle they gave me. My family was able to go to multiple spots to watch. Thanks for a terrific first marathon.

Great Race!!

I just wanted to let you know that I ran the half-marathon yesterday and I think this race was much better than last year. The food was great and there was plenty of it (I was finished at 11:00 a.m.). The entertainment was awesome too! I liked all the bands along the road, especially the one at Woodward Park. It really helped me get up that hill. Even though there were more hills this year, I liked this course better than last years. The only thing that was disappointing was the crowd support. I had wished more Tulsans would make it out to support this event. Anyways, thank you for your hard work and bringing such a first-class event to Tulsa!

Concrete and Hills

The glory of running the majority of the marathon miles on a flat course is taken away because it seems to be all on concrete roads. Miles 22-25 you are faced with incredible hills. The aid stations and volunteers throughout the race were great. What happened to the spectators? Did someone forget to tell Tulsa there was a marathon going on? Great technical t-shirts (2) and medal. There was not much food at the end. Christmas cookies (you got 1), out of pizza, and Mexican food. You only got one bottle of water or Accelerade after crossing the finish, and they were out of beer. I finished at 4:41. I can't imagine what was left for the folks that came in after me. I will not try this one again.

difficult course

I loved the organization and race director - offered quick answers and were very helpful! The medical help was great as well, which I ended up needing a lot. The reason that I would never do this race again would be if I were trying to PR again - tons of concrete running and nearly 5 miles of HILLS at the END! I was on my best time ever (had trained very hard to qualify for Boston) but hit the hills and it trashed me. I went from 7:14 per mile to 25-minute miles I was barely able to walk straight, and needed help even for that. The medical staff tried to get me to stop - that's how bad it was. They were a great help in my misery. This was a hard course and I don't understand the need for the hills when there is plenty of flat ground around Tulsa.

VERY well organized event.

I ran the half marathon. I was amazed that not only did they have every mile marked for both the half and full marathon, but they had a timing clock at every mile as well. Aid stations were very well stocked with lots of volunteers. Tulsa did a great job. The first half of the course is very fast, but the second half they make you work for it.

Mean hills at the end

I really wanted to B.Q. at the race and I was right on target to do so. Then, someone put some hellish hills at the end that just kept on coming. Who is that mean person(s)? I missed my time by less than 4 minutes. I agree the course should be run in reverse. That was my first comment at the finish. I finished in under 4 hours and I got the LAST beer. I'm sorry for all the other participants who didn't get one (or more than one). I love Tulsa- it's a great town. I am not sure I would do this run again.

Would Have Been Nearly Perfect...

...had the food and beer not run out. I'm a race director and runner - I understand how challenging race-directing is - but there's just no excuse for running out of beer and food so early... BEFORE the 4-hour runners even finished. Cut it back to 1 shirt for next and just be damn sure the food and beer lasts until AFTER the last finishers are in. The organization of this event was superb... pre-race communication was helpful, expo and registration was well-organized, plenty of port-o-johns at the start, course was good, mile markers were accurate, digital timer displays at EVERY mile, bands playing throughout the course, nice crowd support, excellent traffic control, and a well-organized finish area. Would have given "organization" 5 stars if the food/beer was done right.

Great marathon experience.

A top-notch marathon experience. The facilities were excellent. The course was scenic and nice - except for that two-plus mile mountain run that they threw in near the end. I've run Dallas several times, Austin twice, and Chicago twice; the post-race experience at Tulsa was superior to any of the others. Granted, this is in part because of Tulsa's lower numbers, but it is also because the facilities accommodated the runners well.

Ran out of food at finish

Guys, You did a lot right. Having two nice running shirts was great! Medal was cool! Expo was ok! Weather was fantastic! Police were good! Water points were good! My one gripe: No food left at the finish line for the slower runners (5:30)!! I'm slow and probably could stand to lose a few pounds, but to run out of food is not cool. I've run 10 marathons this year and you were at number 2 except for this!! So I drop you to number 4 or 5. DK ST. Louis

An enjoyable day

I thought that the new course was nice and I didn't mind the hills at the end like I thought I would. Having a downhill finish was a very nice change (I did the half last year). The hills preceding the last mile were tough but it was a nice change from riverside. I thought the crowd support was good and the volunteers were outstanding. The weather was great and the cloud cover helped to keep it cool the entire morning. This is only my second marathon but I certainly think that it was well run and I'm looking forward to next year.

Good Race, but could be Great

Overall, this was a great run. Good weather, organized race, nice course. There are a few recommendations I would make for next year. First, put a course map in the race packet. There was a 4-page info packet but no map, and they had run out of maps at the expo so I had to hunt one down in the local newspaper. Second, reverse the course so that the massive hills are at the start and not the finish. This could be done easily because the course starts and finishes in the same place. Finally, there were plenty of medical aid stations but none of them had ICE. I had trouble with my knee and needed ice at the finish, but I was told they didn't have any and that I could ice it when I got home (which was 3 hours away). Ice is essential, especially at the finish. I would recommend this race to a friend. Great technical t-shirts and a really neat finisher's medal.

Each year it is getting better!!

The organization was top-notch. From the technical shirts to the great food at the finish, everything was excellent. The course was improved from the 2006 course (uphill last mile), but hills after 22 miles of racing are not ideal. Even Boston is all downhill after mile 20. I would suggest reversing the course and putting the hills at the beginning of the course and the flat part at the end like the Tulsa Run. The city of Tulsa has the making of a PR course (Riverside Drive) or a hilly tough-as-nails course (miles 22-24). Unfortunately, this year's course had both features. It would be nice to have one or the other and let the race develop a tradition as such. The spectators were great when present, but many miles without them.

Great race - even better than last year

Enjoyed the changes to the course that were made this year - very nice to finish running through the Utica Square neighborhood and Woodward Park. The race premiums (race shirt and finisher's shirt) are both of excellent quality. A great race and very well organized.

This is a "Must Do" for Fifty-Staters

Things good: The organization was wonderful. This race is as different from Chicago a one could be - plenty of everything. The weather was wonderful for running - gentle south breeze, temps in the 50's and overcast. Tulsa is a city full of warm friendly people. The crowds weren't large (probably in church), but what were there were fantastic. The race staggering times - great idea. Things I wish were different: Tulsa's roads are not the best. All in all though, we loved it and recommend it highly.

Very Walker-Friendly; Good Organization!

My friends and I are basically moderately fast walkers. Course was very walker-friendly and the support was awesome. Was a little concerned as I had heard others complain about the hills at the end. But they apparently changed the route for this year and we all thought it was awesome. The volunteers were friendly and welcoming and eager to assist if needed. The end was great with lots of fan support and music. We walked the quarter (6.5 miles) and we decided right at the end that this is one we'd like to do next year. I'm told the food was wonderful but we left right after finishing. I'd certainly recommend to other walkers because there were over 300 walkers so you didn't feel like you were holding anything up. Loved it!!!

Fun race, good course, and I set a PR!

This was my 1st time running the Route 66 Marathon, and I really enjoyed it. The hills at the end are tough, but give the course character as well. Constructive comments for next year's consideration: 1. Move the finisher's food tent closer to the actual finish line. 2. I finished in just under 4 hours (for the 1st time), and by the time I recovered for a few minutes and went for my post-race beer, it was gone. That seems a little quick (and I was disappointed because I had earned it). Excellent race, though. Supported well throughout the course.

A Fun Marathon and an Awesome Medal!

The race was well done. It was laid out well, and it was an enjoyable marathon. The hills at the end were tough for me, and I heard similar comments from a few others I spoke with. But it was fun looking at the nice homes in that neighborhood. Wow! The support stations were appropriately spaced out, and were well stocked and staffed. It worked out well. The staff and volunteers were quite friendly, and as helpful as they could be. That is part of the mind-set of people in the South, I think. This is my 11th marathon, and is the first time I have seen the elapsed time at each mile marker. That was novel, although I am not much of a clock-watcher myself. My mind-set is 'If I finish the race, then I won'. By the time I finished, they were only letting runners have one piece of pizza, and there were folks in there taking pizza who were not runners. That was unfortunate. Also, I could not find any bananas at the end, but it could have just been a timing issue. This race organization did not allow packet pickup on race day morning. That makes it tough for out-of-staters, like me. And finally about the medal: It was awesome! I am so very glad I came to Tulsa and ran in - and finished - this marathon. Grand Rapids and Denver had heavy-duty medals like Tulsa did, but this medal is far superior, and is (and will probably continue to be) my favortie! The Tulsa Marathon Staff did not spare anything on this one. For that I say a big 'Thank You!' And thanks for an overall fantastic marathon experience.

This was a great race that is world class among marathons. The weather was sooooo unlike the cold last year. It was cool at the start and was 65 degrees by the time I finished (3:56). What fun! The course was pretty and interesting, if a little tough at the end with the hills. I like the way the half starts an hour after the full, so there's less congestion at the beginning and then they combine for the last six miles. The organization was superb. Good expo, good pasta dinner and speaker, and great food at the finish line.

Awesome perks for running this race

The pasta party was awesome and elegant for a race event. The organizers did a great job and it was better than expected for a first-time event. The perks runners got for the race were awesome: sweatshirt, finisher shirt, and sandals from Spenco. I heard that they may not have the sandals for 2007 but I still think it's great to get two shirts out of the race. I also loved the poster they sold at their expo as a commemorative item, and I hope they do it again. The race course was scenic and there were times I wished more spectators were out on the course... but then again it was their first year. The mixture of both asphalt and concrete can be a bummer, but what marathon doesn't have that??? Overall it was a great race and I'm looking forward to the next one!

Excellent organization

This was my 55th marathon. I was extremely impressed with the organization - especially considering this was the inaugural event. I liked the size of the event - big enough but not too big. Some of the many positive aspects include: clocks at each mile mark; sweatshirt plus a quality finisher shirt for marathoners; plenty of water stations; the volunteers were very friendly; excellent pasta dinner; having the start and finish downtown; and plenty of free parking on the streets. Having the marathon the same weekend as the centennial kickoff celebrations provided a lot of extra activity to enjoy. Areas for possible improvement include: lack of crowd support; hills in the last few miles were tough; too much concrete pavement; and the long out-and-back stretch was boring. For a first-time event, it was excellent. I am glad I came to Tulsa to run it.

Not disappointed at all with this run

What I liked: The police support. The crowd support at the start and at the intersection into and out of Jenks. The finisher's tech shirt. The diverse water stations. The size of the race. What I did not like: The hills at the end - killer. The short detour back east on Peoria before heading to the finish line - very much a bubble-buster. Crowd support toward the end. Christian radio station at the most difficult part of the run - don't need Jesus there; need something a little more exciting. Overall, I enjoyed myself and was glad I ran in Tulsa.

Great Job on this Inaugural Marathon!

I thought the course was great, although hills at the end were not so good for me; and the headwind?! I wasn't aware that would be there. The aid stations were wonderful with encouraging volunteers. The crowd support was slim, but they did encourage us. I was expecting more music along the route, especially the last mile. If you advertise a course with music, it would be good to deliver. The police/traffic control was wonderful and so supportive as well. Great job for your first. I know it will only get better from here.

Great inaugural marathon, Tulsa!

Congratulations, Tulsa! For an inaugural marathon, I am of the opinion that the you all did a great job. I feel certain the marathon organizers will continue to improve it for next year. I would like to suggest finding a different route if the run continues to go into Jenks, because running across a parking lot, then past the back patios of restaurants facing the river is not conducive to having large numbers of people participate. I had no problems with the water stations and I appreciate immensely all the people handing us drinks. Crowd support could have been better, but it was good for a first-time marathon. I had my own support team cheering me on (the folks in the red sweatshirts), but I also appreciate very much the support from the Tulsa police. Thank you. Tulsa is like my second hometown, because I spent 19 years of my life there. I started running after I moved to Colorado, but I will be back to run this marathon again!

Very proud of my adopted hometown!

Being able to run my first marathon in my adopted hometown of Tulsa made this a very special event. Good on Tulsa for organizing an incredible event. I will definitely be back next year. A few recommendations.... - Please... please... please offer something other than PowerAde. It's junk. I know Coke is a sponsor... but provide for the runners. - Lose the mini out-and-back from 36th to 41st on Peoria. - I know it's hard to avoid the concrete... but ouch! - Larger food tent for next year. Ran out of food too quickly. - Long-sleeve tech shirt is nice... but the 50/50 sweatshirt... not so much.

Thanks for a great first time!

Although I live out of town, I run in Tulsa almost every weekend, so felt like I was on my "home turf." Well done, Tulsa; I was a proud Oklahoman! I was somewhat disappointed in the lack of music along the way and at the "mile of inspiration," but overall I really enjoyed my first marathon experience. I am ready to do another one as soon as I can! I know next year will be even better as some of the glitches are worked out. The race was a good first marathon for Tulsa and I am glad I went. The expo was fun and well run, and I love the sweatshirt. The volunteers and the support from the police department on the route was fantastic. The race has a lot of potential. I will not return primarily because of the amount of concrete on the route. Concrete may not be too bad for 13.1 miles, but 26.2 miles of concrete are a killer. I don't know if the route can be adjusted to at least get the runners on some asphalt, but that would be helpful. The support from the aid tents was almost nonexistent. I know of at least two tents that had no supplies at all - no pain relievers of any kind. I am not too sure what support they were offering. At the finish there was no food left except for some stale bagel pieces. In fact, the volunteers were standing there eating the last pieces of pizza. I wasn't the last runner to finish; there were still a number of people out on the course. I realize it's difficult to provide for such large numbers but if you are taking the same registration fees from the slower participants you should provide full support for at least as long as the course is officially open.

Fantastic Marathon

I really enjoyed my first marathon. The crowd was very encouraging. I like the way they announce your full name when you cross the finish line. I like the extended finish time, since I am a race-walker. I look forward to number two, maybe Oklahoma City in the spring.

Good race.

Overall a decent race. A few things disappointed me: The sweatshirts, and the church choirs at the end that I was looking forward to the whole race were just a Christian radio station. I thought the course was great, until all of those hills at the end, but that just made the finisher's area 10 times better.

This marathon was set up by and for runners

Anything said negative about this race is a product of ignorance or a genuine intention to whine. 1. But for knowing this was a first-time event, you would not be able to tell. 2. From the website on, the organization was excellent. 3. The course was excellent. Yes there are hills. Deal with it. This is not a "hilly" course by the standards of true marathoning. 4. I have NEVER seen so many water stations. 5. Southern hospitality is alive and well in Tulsa. 6. The weather was perfect. 7. The layout was very conducive for having your own cheering section following you around on the course. 8. Just a suggestion: Before endorsing any hotels, make them assure you that their staff will know about the marathon and there are no issues with late checkouts. I had a little drama with this, but in the end all was ok. I stayed at the Double Tree. Nice hotel, but no knowledge by ANYONE of the marathon.

Disappointed!

I was somewhat disappointed by this event. Course was just not that great, though the volunteers were. But there were not too many crowds. Hotel was a disaster. And, worse - were the photos taken along the course? Did they not know how to get in a location where the sun was shining so we could be seen? The finish line photos were worthless.... They should have hired some professionals for that! If you got a good photo, you were very lucky!

Good, bad, and ugly

Good: My room at the Crowne. Bad: The hills over the last 4 miles. Lame goodie bags. Inaccurate course markings. Lack of decent food at the end of the race. Ugly: Nothing here. Bravo on the inaugural race. I know it will only get better. Thanks, Chris. Bennett Grey

Hats off to the City of Tulsa for a great marathon

What a very well supported race this inaugural event was. The plane flyover was awesome. The electronic updates were exciting to send to friends in Idaho and Arizona. The police staff was absolutely fantastic at controlling the intersections. It was encouraging to see the many spectators along the course, cheering us on. The only drawback was the great distance on concrete. It would have been nice to have mentioned that in the course information, though I probably would have run it anyway. Maybe spread out more porta-potties along the way and less at the start. To top it off, the weather was near perfect. Thank you Tulsa.

ok course, good city, bad hotel

Tulsa was ready for runners; the Crowne Plaza was not. They need to get a clue about 1) early coffee and 2) late checkout. (Ran the half-marathon.)

Age-group awards are very plain

Hills - we all had to run them. I ran the 1/2 and my Garmin had it at 13.22. I don't think I deviated that much during the race. I was all ready to give the race a 10 until the awards came up. I have received a nicer looking age-group award at races with as few as 50 runners. Maybe shape the plaque similar to the highway sign? Plus, even though it didn't affect me, I, along with several others, was very suprised that they doubled up awards for some runners (like a masters award and an age group award). Don't see that very often. Maybe Tulsa should take their awards clue from Little Rock. With all that, after 30 years of running and over 600 races, Tulsa is still one I would recommend.

Will be back again next year!

Actually the second time I had run this course - first time was with Dean Karnazes during his Endurance 50. Very impressed with the organization, considering it was the inaugural race. My only suggestions for improvement are to work out a bit more flexible deal with the host hotel so that runners can check out a bit later so they can get cleaned up a bit. Loved the technical finisher's long-sleeved t-shirt... but the sweatshirt, not so much. Would prefer to have a short-sleeved t-shirt; one of the technical t-shirts they were selling at the expo would have been much better than a sweatshirt in my opinion. The course was great, aid stations greater and the folks on the course the greatest. Will definitely be back next year. Thanks Tulsa!

Very Nice Marathon

Impressive marathon for an inaugural one! Only realistic expectation is that they get the mile splits corrected for next year. Also, my watch showed 14 seconds quicker than my official time. Other than splits being off during the second half of marathon (easily correctable), this event was an "A." Volunteers were excellent and extremely friendly and helpful, traffic control was perfect, overall organization was what you'd expect, and the after-race party covered all the bases. I just really enjoyed the friendliness of everyone and think highly of Tulsa because of this.... There was genuine encouragement from all volunteers and spectators throughout the entire course. I gave the spectators five stars because I value quality over quantity. The course is what it is... downhill the first 1.5 miles and uphill the last 1.5 miles. Deal with it. It's still a fast course. Starting and finishing downtown is the best way to go. I also enjoyed the antique car display. Great job, Tulsa!

Well Organized - Good Job

The out-and-back was boring. I like another racer's comment about using more of the vintage route 66 theme with bands, etc.... The water stops need work. I usually walk through after I grab my water or hydration drink but I had to stop about three times because they weren't ready. Some stops were well stocked; others were smaller with much less, it seemed. I was surprised not to see more spectators. The gravel incline in Jenks was odd. I was looking forward to the choirs in the end. But, what did get me was a group of enthusiastic church kids shouting, "Go, go, go, go" - while jumping up and down. They were cute. The markings for the last few miles - where they accurate? I lost track and was stunned when I asked a policeman if he knew how much farther and he said 4 blocks. I would have picked it up sooner. The volunteers in the finisher's area were great!

Best first-time marathon I have ever done.

This was marathon number 42 for me. I plan to do this one again. I must commend the organizers for a very good first-time marathon. Most of the course was on concrete, but that is not unusual for most races. I enjoyed running by the river. The crowds, although small, were very supportive and the aid stations were about the best one could hope for. The post-race food was a pleasant surprise. (Not many races serve freshly made hamburgers, pizza and beer.) The only suggestion I can make would be to move the starting time to 7:00 am. My reasons for this are: First, there's not as much to worry about with late check-out. Second, this year the weather was PERFECT, but when you have a warmer-than-normal race, your runners will not have to suffer from the heat at the later stages of the race. Third and finally, starting an hour earlier means more of the day is left at the end of the race for everyone.

Great for an inaugural event

Overall, this was a great inaugural event. I was at first a little hesitant to run it because most inaugural races have some growing pains but I decided that I would give it a chance. The organization was quite good, everything at the expo went smoothly and I love that we received a sweatshirt in our race package. The technical finisher's shirt is awesome and the medal is very appropriate. Thanks for announcing the names of the finishers - that was a very nice touch! The things to improve on: The course - the hills were a killer at the end. The entertainment: even though a lot of bands were advertised, barely any showed up. I was looking forward to the church choirs, but they weren't there, either. Aid stations: please add a few more, especially late in the race. Finish line: there were not a lot of things to eat for people who have a hard time consuming solids. I really could have used a Jamba Juice, but even though I finished the full marathon in under four hours, they were out already. Just add some yogurts or smoothies to the pizza and Mexican food. The sandals: who is supposed to wear them??? I have extremely narrow feet and still can't get them on....

Good Inaugural Event

This was my 28th marathon. I usually don't think much of inaugural events because they're usually filled with growing pains but this one hits all the important marks. Good water stops, excellent overall organization, traffic control by the police and no hassle packet pickup. Only suggestions would be to have it more on Route 66, if possible, less concrete on the course and get rid of those hills at the end. The neighborhood was nice to run in but those three plus miles of hills were not. The run in Jenks was pretty dull but what marathon course doesn't have a few dull spots. Spectator rating was low because not many people came out but those that did were terrific. Thanks Tulsa for putting on a great event. Would recommend. Especially the Blue Dome Diner down from the host hotel. The atmosphere was quaint and the food was down home good.

This race has a lot of potential

Overall this race was 'OK'. Pros: - Very good organization. - Full marathoners get an extra finishers 'technical' shirt. - Enthusiastic crowd, when possible due to course layout. Cons: - Course was mostly on a straight, boring road with very little scenery. (Logistically, it may be impossible to get the permits to spend more time on 'actual' Route 66, so I can't fault the organizers for that.) - No finishers shirt for half-marathoners. - On course entertainment was not there as advertised. - PowerAde as replenishment. (PowerAde is probably the worst product on the market for people that actually want to ingest a hydration drink, due to its market-leading level of high fructose corn syrup. You might as well be drinking soda.) Suggestions (in order of my desire to see a change): - It's Route 66; give the race a 'classic 50s/60s theme and get related bands out there to break up Riverside, which is booooring for miiilles. This could instantly transform the weakest link into one of the strongest! - Get something other than PowerAde out there for runners. This may be hard since Coke was a sponsor, so maybe we should just lobby them to market a more responsible product. - Trash the ugly sweatshirt and just give everyone a technical shirt for participating. More races are doing it and it makes it easier for folks to justify the registration fee. If you want an additional perk for finishers, maybe consider a cold weather beanie or racers hat.

Good course, Fantastic finish

My first marathon and it was great. Only slight complaint would be the gravel bit in Jenks. I expected - and did - finish way at the back of the pack but what I didn't expect was that past 5:30 point they would still be announcing finishers by name. Very classy. I was waiting to get this one in the bank to determine if I would try another full. This was such a positive experience that I will definitely continue to enter marathons.

Wonderful race & organization

This is my fifth marathon, and I thought it was excellent. Everything was great - the web page, expo, organization of the race, announcer at the finish line, post-race, and especially the community of Tulsa. This was my first time traveling to Tulsa and I have shared the race with several of my running friends. We will be back next year. The only suggestion that I have is having vaseline at some of the stations or first aid area. Again, congratulation on a perfectly-run race. Enjoyed my time in Tulsa.

Made my First marathon Memorable

What an amazing experience, I had a blast! this was my first full marathon, and first organized race I've run in yet. I thought all the support from the crowd was top notch, the aid stations worked quite well, especially the GU handout at mile 21, which really helped. I enjoyed the flyover at the beginning SO much, it was really cool to see the planes disapear over the river, leaving vapor trails. I was a little surprised to know I got second in my age group, and I'm looking forward to running this race again next year, and improving in the mean time! Oh, and the awards were great, nice quality finishers shirts. Thanks a bunch for making it such a success, I'm definitely hooked on marathons now!

Good race, but don't forget the back of the pack!

This was my first marathon, and I was dealing with a hip injury, putting me literally at the back of the pack. I think only 5-6 people finished after me. I was disappointed that the food tent was abandoned and the medical tent was folding up shop by the time I got through. In fact, several of the water stops between miles 22-24 were closing while I was out on the course. It's frustrating to watch volunteers dumping water/powerade on the ground as you're running or hobbling by. Don't forget that the last marathoners to cross the finish line need -- and deserve -- the same level of attention as the other runners. I'll run this course again, hopefully faster, but I certainly don't want to feel like I'm a 'distraction' if I come in dead last.

average

A few hills in the middle of the course would be nice, instead of just the last few miles. I was very disappointed that the choir/band was not there for what was supposed to be an "inspirational mile." More music and spectators along the course would be helpful. The location of the host hotel was great, but that was about the only good thing about it. Rooms were not too nice and they would not allow late check-outs. The finish area was awesome!

Thank you God for a beautiful race!!!

Just like almost everyone else, I thought this was a GREAT inagural marathon. There seemed to be more hills at the end than the elevation map indicated, but what a challenge to overcome! My training partner and I were able to get around the hotel 'No Late Checkout' dilemma, by signing up for their 'preferred customer' plan. We only had to fill out a brochure and were able to get a 2:00pm checkout, but it took some begging to get that information...probably would not stay at that hotel again. Food tent was a little disappointing. The heavy food was not what I wanted at the end of a grueling race. More fruit, maybe some bottled smoothies, and fruit juices would be great. The fans were AWESOME and our 4:15 pace team leader was GREAT. Very motivational and right on the pace....even though I fell behind her at mile 23! Overall great race. Let's thank the One in charge of the weather too....couln't have asked for a more perfect day....Thank You GOD!

Great Event

This was a great first-time event. The vintage plane fly-over was great and I have yet to witness, until now, a shotgun start. The hills at the end made it fun. It separated those who have quads and those who do not. And hey, free beer at the end. I was running with a lady from Tulsa, and I know she needed a 3:45 - I hope she made it.

run more on route 66

this was my first marathon and so i don't a comparative experience, but i will say it seemed well organized, there were always fans along the way encouraging the runners and the post race fesivities were great. my only problem with the race was it was run on riverside drive and not on route 66. i think out of 26.2 miles we ran on historic route 66 about 10 blocks. could the course change to go more along the route 66 instead of out to jenks?

Nice race, the finish was a killer though.

This was my first marathon although I have run a half before. This was the first year for this marathon and for an inaugural event it was quite good. The course was fast and flat... until about mile 22 where the hills started to arrive, some of which were pretty steep. The last mile was pretty much all up hill and made the finish a little more painful. There weren't a whole lot of spectators other than at the start and finish of the race. But the ones that were out there were loud and supportive. The organization of the event was lacking in a couple areas, and it probably has more to do with this being a new event. First the aide stations were quite undermanned which caused some 'traffic jams' especially early on. Also the poweraide at several of the stations seemed to be mixed incorrectly, sometimes it tasted like blue water, other times it was almost syrup like. The finishing food area seemed to be a bit disorganized as well and the food choices were somewhat lacking. On a more positive note, the volunteers who were out there did a great job and really worked hard. I had a great time and enjoyed the overall experience of the race. The organization problems are really quite minor and will improve w/ time.

Great event, needs just a little tweaking.

This was a very successful event. I am glad I came to Tulsa. I have a few comments. I suggest using chip time only. The race was bottled up at the start and there was uneven pavement and gravel in Jenks. At times the course wasn't as clearly marked in and around Jenks. The entertainment was meager on the second half of the marathon and I suggest allowing runners to use I-Pods or Walkmans. The course was generally great, great marathon, great volunteers, police and hospitality. This is a beautiful city. This race featured your lovely city and it is a great first annual race to commemorate Route 66. The people were lovely and hospitable. The race picture with time is a great idea. I plan on seeing you in your fair city next November 18th, 2007. Thanks!

Great Day Great Run for Tulsa

What a great day for a marathon and what a great day for Tulsa. The city came out and showed up very well for all of the runners. The spectators were out in good numbers at many locations along the route. The volunteers were very good at all of the water stops and before and after the race. Having run large marathons in the past, I wondered how my home town would turn out and everything was great. Thanks Tulsa.

Great course, scenic, and fun

The course was excellent. Just enough hills to keep it interesting. The organization was really great. There was no confusion, the mile markers were large enough to see from a distance. Great water stations, enthusiastic volunteers. Could have been more porta-potties on the course and many more spectators. It got kinda lonesome at times. An appropriate finishers medal. I'll be back next year.

good inaugural event

Nice job on the inaugural event. From beginning to end, everything was well organized. The water stations were spaced nicely and had plenty of volunteers. The announcers at the end were better than any I have ever experienced. Their enthusiasm was appreciated. The post race was great. Good food and plenty of it. I never did see a massage tent. They need to look into post race massages. My only real complaint was the mile markers. Everything was fine until mile 15. Something was way off around this marker. Later in the race around mile 22 or 23, I thought I missed a marker but I then came across it. I'm nowhere near the front of the pack but I didn't run any 14 minute miles like the marker suggested. While running up the very steep hils at the end, you want to be assured the markers are accurate. I also heard complaints from those wearing Garmins that they finished with 26.7 miles. I don't think the Garmins are 100% accurate but that's a big difference. All in all, it was a great day and a very good marathon. 50 staters should consider this event. Just be aware of the hills at the end.

Very well done. The course was smooth and flat. The only fault with the course is the rocky bit of path in Jenks; made for unsure footing. The spectators, police, and organizers were all helpful and very encouraging. Some of the mile markers were not properly located. I definitely recommend this marathon for anyone looking for a small field of runners and a fast course.

High Marks to Event Directors & Volunteers

I want to give high Marks to the event Directors and Volunteers. This was definitely a class production. I highly recommend this Marathon, especially if you are looking for a professional, yet, 'hometown' event. I especially want to thank the Medical staff for taking such great care of the athletes. I, myself, needed attention after my race, and was tremendously impressed with the overall care and professionalism given to the athletes. The course was terrific, and the volunteers were first class. This one I will definitely do again.

Overall impressed with Expo, organization of race, post race car show and festival feel with music and food was just great. Nice place to congregate. Would like to have seen the cheerleading and percussion or bands on course for the 1/2...really thought there would be more finishing spectators. Those there, though sparse for the most part, were encouraging and supportive. Very nice medal and logo. Hills were tough a the end even for a Missouri guy -would sure consider a flatter finish or park setting if possible.

Very Well Done for Inagural Marathon

I was very happy I opted to do this run. It was obvious a lot of time went into organizing this event. The course is flat till you get to around 23 miles and then there are hills and an uphill finish. Knowing this ahead of time would have been a benifit (drive the course). The finish venue was very well organized making it easy to meet family/friends and get food (and beer). Look forward to doing this race again next year knowing what I know now.

Good effort for a first time marathon

I ran the half marathon course. The course was pretty flat with some hills. There were ample water stops with power gel being handed out twice since there was a turnaround area. Not many spectators showed up but the ones who did were supportive. Great finisher medals and the sweatshirt for signing up was nice too. I think it was a good first marathon and feel like this race will only continue to improve and grow in the years to come.

Very good, Tulsa

I think all of those involved in organizing this marathon should be proud. This is the kind of race that I expect from a city with as strong a running community as Tulsa's. As a former Tulsa area resident, it was great to be back running along my favorite section of the Arkansas River. It was also great to see familiar faces along the way. The only part of the race course I wasn't too keen with was that undeveloped parking lot entrance in Jenks... but that is about it for carps. I hope that this marathon returns with the same level of organization, and that the general Tulsa community understands how a well run event such as this adds immeasurable value to the city.

Not much public interest.

I believe the closeness of the annual Tulsa Run probably took away some of the splash of the first Route 66 Marathon. Hopefully there will be more spectators and more music along the route in future years. Hydration stations were well placed. This was my first event (Half Marathon) so I really have nothing to compare it against, but news coverage of events in other locations seems to indicate large spectator groups that we did not have. I walked/jogged the event with my wife this year and we are planning to do it again next year.

The best finisher's food tent I have ever experienced as of yet. Great location from race hotel. If the star spangled banner was played, we couldn't hear it. Great weather and a nice piece of Tulsa.

This race was my first, and its first, and that made it something special. The run had enough change in scenery to where time just flew by. Water stations were fairly slim in the middle. Fans were great, for a first-time event. The start and finish area are classic. The course has a nice, undulating finish for the last 2.5-3 miles and was somewhat of a challenge. All in all, it was a good race.

Wonderful Addition to Tulsa

The Route 66 Marathon was a wonderful addition to Tulsa! The course was absolutely beautiful, the organizers and directors did a fabulous job making sure everything went perfectly. The support for the runners was wonderful. This was my first marathon experience (I ran the Half-marathon) as a runner, and found it to be everything I had hoped for! The course was a bit challenging, but that made it even more of an accomplishment. However, the view and variety were wonderful! The water and sports drink stops were perfectly orchestrated, and the timing and registration crew did a great job both before, during, and after the race! The pace leaders were on the mark and incredibly supportive. Congratulations on a job well done!

Enjoyed the hospitality

Hello, Loved the race, the graciousness of everyone, and the professionalism involved. Only one comment to make the race better: Either have small food items every few miles during the race for the marathoners or inform the runners there will be 'no food' provided during the race. I myself and several others ran out of energy and thought there would be food on the route. There were only 2 spots for gels. I don't mind providing my own...but I would like to know if it is going to be available or not. Again, thank you very much for a wonderful weekend. I will promote this marathon to my friends. I especially want to thank the sincere kindness and generosity of the people of Tulsa and Oklahoma...and this is coming from a Jayhawker! Thank you, Bart

Excellent organization, average course

The organization was excellent. It was great to get both a sweatshirt and a finisher's t-shirt, and they were both top notch. Both the start and finish of the race were smooth as glass. It was a nice touch to get a free beer at the finish, as well as Spenco slippers. The bag-drop and pick-up was well done, and I also liked the men's trough for convenience. The support from the Tulsa Police department along the route was very impressive. The entry fee was reasonable and good hotel rooms for cheap prices are plentiful in Tulsa, as are great places to eat. The route itself was good until the end, when you had a loop on Peoria and then a climb up hill at the very end. The hill cannot be avoided, but lets hope they figure out how to get rid of the south loop on Peoria. The other downside was the very minimal crowd support. With the exception of the start, finish, and turn around near Jenks, the course was almost void of spectators. All in all I was glad I decided to do this race.

Very professionally organized and managed.

The course needs a little smoothing out. Consolidate some of the long stretches with the abrupt u-turns in some way?? Loved the staff and volunteers. The event was perfectly executed!

Friendly, high-energy volunteers

Great race! However, according to my GPS watch, the half-marathon was 13.25 miles rather than 13.1.

Great race, but hard finish

The Route 66 was very quality race. I commend the race director and the volunteers for such a nice course. The course went gradually down until the turnaround. Therefore, it was gradually uphill on the way back. The last three miles were even hillier. Lots of extra goodies: sweatshirt, finisher's long-sleeve shirt, sandals, and a finisher's food tent. The bands alond the course and at the end all added to the experience.

Great course!

I was extremely impressed with the course and the organization of this race - especially considering it was the first one!!!! Would highly recommend this to everyone! I will be there next year!

Excellent event! See you in Tulsa!

This was an excellent first time marathon...the entire group, race director all the way down to the volunteers did an excellent job. Great course, relatively flat running from downtown Tulsa to one of the nice suburban areas along the river, nice and scenic then back through a couple of nice areas of town, the last two miles finish with a couple of short challenging hills as you reach the finish line where the volunteers did a great job of taking care of the finishers after your name was announced. First time marathoners were recognized with a special bib color, nice little touch. Nice Brooks long sleeve finishers shirt as well. Great event that should grow as the word gets out. Tulsa has a strong running community, this November marathon is a reflection of the many great folks who make Tulsa a great running town.

Great Inaugeral Run

I am VERY impressed that this was Tulsa's first big marathon. The race was well organized and very well done. I would definitely recommend it. It was a beautiful day as well! My race experience was a bit tainted by a nagging hip problem. I ran this race pretty injured from about 13 miles or so on. The people at the medical stations were great and so helpful but completely underequipped. They could stretch my bad hip for me but that was about it. No icy-hot patches, no vaseline, no band-aids, nothing but them personally and a folding table. You REALLY need to make sure that next year you equip those stations a bit better. Also please train your volunteers to yell out what they are serving (powerade vs. water). Most of them did an okay job but there were two stops where they switched the order of the beverages and then the people weren't announcing what they had (confusing!). These are all things that you can plan a bit better next year and certainly do not take away from a well mapped course with clear mile markers and a fun event. VERY WELL DONE!!!

Outstanding inaugural marathon

There are a few absolutes for anyone seriously running a marathon--website with accurate course map, description and elevations, an on-time start without problems, chips and timing system that work, accurate mile markers, acceptable traffic control, and well stocked water stations. The organizers did not disappoint in any of these critical issues. The course is flat until the last 7k so a BQ is possible. The crowd was the size you would expect but supportive, especially the female police officer at mile 24! About the only suggestions I would make would be to redesign the food area to avoid the long lines and have some PTs for post-race massages. Overall, an outstanding job and I would run it again. Thanks!

One time only - too much concrete

I liked the marathon but there was too much concrete and not enough asphalt. It really beat up my legs. Big complaint on your host motel: They were telling everyone no late checkout. I was told they would charge me half a day's rate if I was not out by noon. They ended up not charging after much arguing, but this isn't something you want to worry about while you're trying to run a marathon. I would never go back there and I'm not the only one.

Excellent overall event.

Great course, fantastic support, perfect day for the event. The only glitch seemed to be a huge distance between mile markers 22 and 23. Was a lot longer than a mile. Only mention it because many of the runners commented on their splits at that marker. Couldn't find anything of substance to complain about if I tried, though. Congratulations on a great event.

Great course, spectator involvement and music

This was my first half marathon and my wife's first full marathon, and I enjoyed meeting other runners, and being greeted at the finish line with all of the hoopla - being treated as if I just walked on the moon. My body was tired but my feelings of accomplishment were overwhelming. Thanks for helping me make a goal. I will be back for the full marathon in 2007. - Bib# 5332

Fast course, beautiful city, friendly people.

Nice, mostly flat course. Note: There was lots of hard concrete that's tough on the legs, a good chance of a headwind on the last half of the marathon, and those hills at the end are tough - even though it's still mostly flat. As such, though, it is still the kind of course you can run a personal best on.... I know because I did. Beautiful city and running along and across the river offers some spectacular vistas.

Beautiful day for a marathon!

I was in the 4:30 pace group, but they started with sub 10 minute miles for the first three miles, which was faster than the 10:18 pace I was expecting. I finished in 4:43. I was surprised and disappointed that they didn't run a steady 10:18 pace from the beginning. However, I enjoyed the group while I ran with them and would encourage you to offer pace groups again. Add additional bathrooms on course. Add more organized support on course - where were the marching bands, cheerleaders and church choirs during the entire last mile?! I appreciated the police officers who were actually cheering us on while directing traffic at around the 22 or 23 mile marker! I've already planned to come back next year to run with my sister, husband and children - glad to see that you are adding a kid's marathon.

Great Inaugural Event!

First off, I must say that this was my very first Half Marathon. I had a great time, yes I hurt today but who doesn't, and the course was great. There may be some who say that the hills at the end were too much but I loved it. They killed me but at the same time I conquored them. I now have the motivation to run a Full Marathon, and I definitely plan on running this as a full next year. As for the course, it started off with a nice down hill and a quick turn onto the Historic Route 66. That took us over the Arkansas River and through a neighborhood and light industrial area. I would like for the race to have continued along Rt 66 for a bit longer, at least until 23rd street then left back over the river. As soon as we got back over to the East side the crowds were fantastic. I didn't really want for water or powerade, one aid station was even handing out Gu packets! Running through Historic Brookside was nice and the crowds were great there also. Nice to see Channel 2 doing live coverage (with play by play) of the race from in front of the studios. After that though the course toughtened up a bit. The hills started and, except for a brief downhill into the SoBo District, they didn't stop until right before the finish. Big and motivating crowd on the downhill into the finish. The only minor complaint I'd have would be that they ran out of free hamburgers in the food tent. They did fix that quickly by bringing in TONS of free pizzas for finishers. As for the medals and goodies. Since this is my first long distance race take my comments as you will. LOVED the medals, they are not gaudy or flashy but very classy. It's in the shape of the Historic Route 66 road sign. Granted no finishers' tech shirt or sandals for us halfies (they were there for the fulls) but we all got a really nice sweatshirt. Overall a great experience and I plan to run it again next year. Thanks guys!

great race

This race was great! The gravel road at 14 was a little tricky, but each course has its own set of difficult features. The weather was just perfect for my orange speedo! Great first marathon... or 17th marathon!

More GU please and before the 20-mile mark.

Overall the marathon was a great experience, but I would like to see more GU at the water stations sooner than at the 20-mile mark. I took for granted that it would be provided and I feel it would have been beneficial to my performance during the run.

Great first marathon!

Overall, a great experience. From the web page, which included a mile by mile review of the course (with photos) to the expo to the fireworks/laser show to the volunteers to the course to the weather to the finish, you couldn't have asked for more. Well, the hills in the last mile and brisk wind out of the north coming back weren't fun, but there wasn't much the organizers could have done about that. Most of the course was flat and scenic. Not much of a crowd, but I didn't expect one, and having run Boston, NYC, and San Diego, didn't want one. The size was perfect - I think about 1200 in the marathon and maybe 3000 overall, so there was plenty of room for everyone, and the announcer called out your name and city at the finish. Lots of water stops with Powerade, splits, signs, no traffic, music on course, pace groups, good enough food at end, technical long sleeve finishers shirt, sweat shirt and Spenco sandals. I didn't go to the pasta dinner, but thought bringing in Sam Thompson, the 'other' 50/50 marathoner, was a nice touch. Congrats Tulsa - you nailed it on your first try.

Good 1st marathon experience

I didn't know exactly what to expect on my first marathon. It was a beautiful day, good course and a great experience. Some complaints I had would include the entertainment, mile marker placement, and spectator numbers. The website showed to have entertainment at appoximately every mile. I only noticed a handful of people providing entertainment. A couple of mile markers were quite a ways off (mile 15, mile 23). Lastly, in some areas there were good numbers of spectatators, but not as many as I would have thought on Riverside. I was definitely looking forward to the 'mile of inspiration', sadly there wasn't much support going up main street. Not to totally sound like I am bashing the event, I had a great time. TC

A superior 5-star marathon all the way - YEAH!

I have been to Twin Cities, Des Moines, Dallas, San Antonio, and Quad Cities. Route 66 is as good as any one of these and better than most! Ample water and PowerAde stations. R. 66 is perfect for first-timers or many-timers!

Beautiful weather and a nice course.

I think it would be a little better if the course looped through Tulsa (i.e. 15th Street), as the riverside portion was a little boring. Also, it would've been good if the volunteers could have handed out water on both sides, as the water stops were a little crazy, especially in the first half. More music would have helped - not just bands, but have someone playing music on a p.a. would have helped. Overall, I think it was a great race - very well organized - and I hope they do it again next year!

Not bad for a first time

The course along the river was nice but the slanted cement surface made it tough. The people along the route were very nice and encouraging. The water/Powerade stations were sufficient and spaced nicely but there was absolutely nothing to eat along the way. We finally got some Gu late in the race but it was too late to help. I was in dire need of Vasoline and Tylenol, asked at the Aid Station but they had neither. With at little more attention to runners' needs, this will be a major premier race next year.

Great race! Well-organized!

This was my first full marathon and I am so glad I did this one for my first one. The route was great - relatively flat with a few hills in the last few miles to make it challenging. I thought it was well-organized, with plenty of water stations, great traffic control, and wonderful volunteers. I also loved the sweatshirt, sandals, finisher shirt and medals. Super job and thank you so much!!

Route 66 Marathon, the start of something good

Being so close to my hometown, I decided to run the inagural Route 66 marathon. Overall, I think the event went pretty well. Expo was about the size you would expect for an inagural event with the number of entrants that this one had. Race packet pick up was easy and went very smoothly. I stayed at what I assume was the host hotel (Crowne Plaza). I know it is out of the control of the race directors, but if the host hotel isn't going to be accomodating to the marathoners by offering a late check out, then I would like to see the business taken elsewhere. After finishing the marathon I had to drive 2 1/2 hours home before getting a shower. The course itself is very flat. If you're looking for a fast marathon, this could be your ticket. However, be prepared to run the majority of it on concrete. If you're not used to this, it will beat you up after several miles. I noticed several runners jumping onto the grass or on the asphalt paths to run in order to get some relief. I'd like to see water stops every mile in the future. This might help to cut down on the congestion at the ones early in the race. Also, please spread the water station tables out so all the runners aren't piled up trying to get water and sports drink. I found them to be very hectic. It would also be nice to always have volunteers handing the runners water. More than once I had to help myself to a cup of water. The medals were nice. After returning home though, I noticed that I was given a medal that said 'My first marathon' on it. This wasn't. There seemed to be a lot of confusion amongst the volunteers on things like this. I think this is an area that could be improved. The little details are very important to runners. We received a nice finisher's shirt and there seemed to be plenty of food at the end. From reading the website regarding this marathon, I expected there to be a lot more music along the course than there was. I was a little disappointed that this wasn't the case. There is defintely room for improvement and I expect that if the race directors take the runners comments to heart, the Tulsa Route 66 marathon will become a popular event.

Great race - plan to do it again next year!

You'd never know this was an inaugural event. The organizers did a fanastic job - from the expo, to the start, to the aid stations, to the finish, to the racers' premiums. And the weather cooperated beautifully. I live in Virginia now, but am totally proud of the job my hometown did on this marathon - I plan to be back!

Great job

Congratulations to Chris Lieberman and his team for putting on a great marathon! Everything seemed to go smooth for this fisrt time event. From parking to packet pickup we had no problems. The flyover at the start was cool, traffic control was excellent, water stops were plentiful, and the volunteers and host hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. The finishers technical shirts and sandals were awesome and the sweatshirt is great! Crowd support was limited but that was ok, the friendliness and encouragement of the other runners made up for that!Only drawback...finishers food seemed to be running out early. But you can be sure I'll be back!

Thanks, Bobby, for helping me reach my goal

Had a great time. Without the 3:30 pacer, Bobby, I would have never made my goal. Don't know if I want to run that fast again though. Spectators were great; volunteers were very cheerful. Was my first marathon, but definitely not my last.

I can't believe this is first time race

This was my 34th marathon and I can't believe how well it was organized and run. From the pasta dinner, to the on-time start, to the aid stations, to the fans, food after the race, (free beer also) it was nearly perfect. Kudos to the organizers-you did a great job. Good luck living up to it next year because you set the bar unbelievably high. At the 5 1/2 hour mark we went back down to the finish line and the announcer was still calling every runners name, and for the first time finishers, telling them, 'you ARE a marathon runner.' At 6 hours the food tent was still dishing out pizza, cookies, rice and beans, etc. Usually in my evaluations I try to suggest improvements, and it's hard to do for this race. I've already recommended this race to others When I get all 50 states done, this is one I'll come back to for sure. Also, it's about 9pm on race nite, and the results are posted online already.......
