Great course, weather is a crapshoot
Ottawa is a great destination for a race and long weekend trip because it lines up with our Memorial Day weekend in the US, and as Canada's national capital, it's a showcase of Canadian history, government, and culture, with numerous museums, parks, and activities for the whole family. For those who want to run a race abroad, Ottawa is an excellent choice given its relative proximity, English-speaking population, favorable exchange rate, and the numerous race distances available. Ottawa Race Weekend is an inclusive event with 6 race options: 2K, 5K, 10K, half marathon, kid's marathon, and marathon, so anyone can participate. This made it ideal for a family running weekend. There are also Voyageur and Lumberjack Challenge options for those who want to run multiple events. The race courses are scenic and fair (from a difficulty perspective). However, as with any race at the end of May, there is a significant risk that it will be hot, so if you're looking at the Ottawa Marathon as your "goal race" then you need to be prepared for the possibility of the weather wrecking your time goal. I'd recommend Ottawa to anyone who wants to try racing in a foreign country and looking for a pleasant long weekend getaway.
The marathon and the 10K are both IAAF gold label events and attract a strong elite field of runners from around the globe. As such, the race organization is top-notch, and that's true for each race of the weekend. Pre-race communication was excellent, especially if you follow the Ottawa Marathon on Facebook or Instagram. Even if you don't, you will receive timely email communications, and the race website is routinely updated. We were notified weeks in advance about route changes that had to be made due to flooding and construction, and they prepared interactive maps where you could see the km markers, aid stations, porta-potty locations etc. There is a free bus tour of the marathon route available on Saturday morning. Each race went off on time, which is really impressive given that there are 6 events over 2 days. There are corrals at the start line based on predicted finishing times, but it's an honor system. The 5K, 10K, and half marathons have wave starts that go off approximately every 2-4 minutes. Since the waves are close in time, there isn't a big incentive to start your race in a faster corral since you're just going to get run down by the faster runners coming up from behind you.
Marathon Course:
A scenic tour of Canada's capital, with a crossing into Gatineau, Québec. If you don't have any familiarity with Ottawa (like me), I highly recommend taking a bus tour of the city the day before the race. Then you'll be able to recognize and better appreciate the sites that you'll run past on marathon day.
What does "scenic" mean here, in the context of a city marathon? My general impression of Ottawa: downtown Ottawa looks like any major city with commercial office buildings, but it's punctuated with buildings that look like European castles (e.g., Parliament Hill, Fairmont Chateau Laurier), as well as more modern and sleek edifices surrounded by public works of art (e.g., National Gallery of Canada, Canadian War Museum). The Rideau Canal is a beautiful artery that runs through the city, which is lined with bike paths and flowers, and the course also takes runners by several parks and green neighborhoods, including Dow's Lake, Commissioner's Park, and Rockcliffe Park. Ottawa Race Weekend takes place the weekend after the Canadian Tulip Festival, so there are still thousands of blooming tulips all over the city on race day.
The Ottawa Marathon is one of the top qualifying races for Boston. They capped the race at 3,500 participants this year so it's not a large or crowded race. The course is fair, and it is possible to run fast here but I wouldn't characterize it as flat. I'd say first half is mostly flat, there are hills in the middle, and then it flattens out again until the 400m incline to the finish.
In sum, I thought the course itself was enjoyable and fair. I think I could have made my time goal if I had had better weather. I'd be willing to do it again, but I would only plan this as a back up marathon and not a goal race, given the risk of hot weather.
Support/Supplies:
Fluid stations were located approximately every 2-3 km - further apart in the first half of the race and closer together in the second half, thankfully. Water and Nuun, the official sports drink of the race, are served. On a cool day, it probably would have been enough, but on a hot day, I found it impossible to run at goal pace and get enough fluids without slowing down or walking. So carry your own water and gels. At certain stations, gels, bananas, oranges, or gummy fruit chews were available but I don't remember at what intervals. Misting stations and sponges are located at strategic points throughout the race. Porta-potties were plentiful; I didn't see anyone jumping into the woods.
The volunteers were amazing! Numerous, helpful, and enthusiastic. However, what impressed me the most is that the marathon provides an "Extra Mile Crew" in the last 10K -- volunteers who will run you if you're having a rough day and need extra help getting to the finish line. I've never seen this in a race before, and it gave me the warm fuzzies.
Swag:
The medals were BEAUTIFUL and scream CANADA! The medals for the other race distances were similar but smaller than the marathon medals. I really liked that they took the time to design special-looking medals so that every participant could feel that they had achieved something significant, no matter the distance. The finisher shirts were awesome short-sleeve tech shirts with a silhouette of Parliament on the back. Most of my race finisher shirts end up in the throwaway pile but I'm actually going to wear my Ottawa shirts. The drawstring bag was standard fare.

Simply The Best Marathon I ever ran
I loved this incredible Gold Award winning Marathon.
The Water Stations were every 3k there were plenty of portable toilets. There were Hundreds of smiling and Helpful Volunteers.
The Spectors were amazing (Those North Americans can really shout loud)
The course was very beautiful and also flatish. But 2 toilet stops messed up my time. But still this has to be my all time favourite Marathon. Thanks to the Organization, all the Volunteers and to all the loud Spectators. There were plenty of goodies at the finish.
The Expo was very Good 3 days before the Marathon at Shaw Centre.
Race Starts 7am by Ottwa City Hall
Cut off time 7 Hours.
If I had to be critical I don't like v neck T shirt for the women. Men had crew neck.
I was confused with half marathon and marathon kilometres flags. (The half mararathon started at 9am 2 hours after the Marathon)
Some runners were given whole bananas, I and some runners were given a third of banana at the finish.
NB in London we are 5 hours ahead of Canada.

118th marathon! Good race for late May
I ran this race nearly a dozen times and this year there were a few snags. The misting machines were not always working and I could have had more water stations during the course (every 2 km). I really enjoyed the last mile angels who were running with runners from 35k on. Great support at the right time. Took a long time after crossing the finish line to get my medal. Lots of food left for late finishers. The baggage check should be closer to the finish as well.

Great marathon, but very congested!!
This was my 6th Ottawa Marathon, and 26th Overall. This race is a must for all runners, with great fans, volunteers and scenic views. The course is nearly flat.
On the positive side, the fans really came through with their sprinklers and hoses to cool the runners down from the high humidity.
Also, the medal and participant shirt have greatly improved over the last couple of years.
Areas for improvement:
First, the race felt very congested, especially the last 4km where the half marathoners joined the marathoners. Colonel-by drive is too narrow to handle massive crowds. I have run lots of large marathons (i.e. Chicago 40000+ runners) and I have never felt that congested as this year.
Better organization for the finish. The lineup to receive your food and drink was crazy. Confederation Park is too small to handle 18000+ runners. Trying to exit the park after the race was very frustrating.
Lastly, Nuun was not sufficient as an energy drink. All the marathons use Gatorade for a reason....it provides carbohydrates, which you need for a marathon.
Ottawa is a great marathon, but improvements are greatly needed.

Ottawa Marathon - Amazing Crowd!!!
This is my 6th Ottawa Marathon and 23rd overall marathon and I am never disappointed with the organization and crowd support. Despite the high humid temperatures, the community came together and support the runners with their water hoses! The only comment is that I have ran in many big events (Chicago, Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, Athens) and they should provide free public transit to the runners to enjoy the city as its a destination marathon for many people. I found the last 5 km very congested and I am a 3:40 marathoner and I would like to enjoy the last few kms but couldn't move. Overall, happy with my time and I was lucky not to overheat!

83rd marathon! Hot, Hot, HOT!!!!
Remember the movie Jaws? There was a scene where Roy Schneider had to decide whether or not to close the beach because of shark attacks. Well, imagine the RD was Roy and the shark was heat. Were there more water stations to fight the heat? No. Did water stations run out of water at the end - yes! It would be like Roy Schneider having more seafood restaurants built along the beach that serve shark fin soup to fight the sharks. Residents were asked turn on sprinklers for the runners. A lot did and it was very welcome and needed. The race course changed a bit but I think having water stations every 3k is insufficient. Lots of gels and the Extra mile crew was a nice touch. Overall a good race with all things considered.

Great race with poor swag
Dear Race Organizers:
Runners take home a medal a shirt and memories from a race.
Ottawa shirts were terrible, but they have improved the past three years.
The Ottawa race medals I own are probably the worst in my collection. Other than the maple leaf, there is nothing to identify the race being from Ottawa.
Look at Detroit for inspiration. You clearly know what race you ran and the medal nails the whole Canada/US cross border marathon.
It would also be nice for this race course to change a bit too.

Beautiful race. Enthusiastic spectators!
My family and I have run various races during National Capital Race weekend over the years: Family 2K, 5K, 10K, 1/2 marathon and marathon. The marathon is, for the most part, a beautiful course, passing by many Canadian landmarks, through residential areas, along the canal and across the river. The streets are lined with enthusiastic spectators of all ages, bands, DJs, signs, high fives and more. Having the opportunity to watch the elite world class runners in all of the races is a bonus!

70th marathon in my hometown!
The race featured bands the nights before which was different the last time I did it. It was a nice touch. The whole city gets behind race weekend and although it features mostly runners from Ottawa and Montreal it was good to see runners from India, Australia and the US. The course was a bit flatter this year but water stations were advertised every 3 km. A race this far into May should have stations every 2 km. The food was just there and considering the price you pay to run it would have liked to have seen a better selection or at least some water bottles for the runners. With the University so close I would have also liked to have seen free use of showers as well. Not a bad race - a bit overpriced. The crowds were good although the new course did have some areas where no one was cheering us on. More gel stations as well.

Love it every time!
I have participated in the Ottawa Race Weekend for 10+ years, but this was the first year I ran the full marathon.
The course is beautiful with lots of variety - residential, canal, river, treed areas. Relatively flat. Lots of spectators.
The only issue is the heat - the race started at 7am, and by my finish at 10:30 it was already 18C and I had a sunburn. Longer runners would have suffered a lot!

Great run!
This is a must do for many reasons:
Beautiful course.
Excellent support.
Cool medal.
Ottawa is a great city to visit.
My hotel was excellent, had a nice post-run food spread in the lobby, a runners comment board. ( Delta Inn).
Hats off the the team that put this one on!

Great race, hotel racket
POSITIVE:
Excellent overall organisation, lots of people supporting.
NEGATIVE:
The hotels operate a cartel on that weekend and oblige you to book two nights at an expensive fare.
It is ridiculous. I live in Montréal and wanted to stay only one night in Ottawa... not possible even booking 6 months in advance.
This is the sole reason why I will not be running Ottawa next year!!!
The organization should take action to solve that issue.

Really nice Spring marathon
Signed up for Ottawa because it offered good temps, flat race course, and pacers. It delivered on all those accounts. I was trying to run under 3:05 to qualify for Boston, but I faded at the end to miss a PR by a few minutes. In retrospect, the pacer did not do many of us favors by surging right through some second-half water stops. The change in tempo eventually dropped me.
The expo is not at a Chicago or Boston level, but it had most things. Although no one (and I mean no one) could confirm whether a 3:05 pacer group existed because the website had promised that and yet the promotional information only listed 3:10. I was bummed, but then on race day there was a 3:05 group.
It was a fun course around the city. Loved the stretch in the beginning by the canal and the final few miles back in the main city. It was also great to be able to have my hotel a few blocks away from expo and start/finish.
The only other odd thing about the race was that the runners really didn't communicate or converse many pleasantries with each other. This went against my Canadian stereotype, but it was noticeable that everyone stuck to themselves.

Some Good, Some Bad and Some Ugly
Some Good, Some Bad and Some Ugly.
Condition: Race day was 5C to 12C / 41F to 54F
GOOD
1)Nice race shirt by gender and different for all distance.
The marathon (42.2 km/26.2m) is quite sharp and wearable after; navy with orange stripes on the sides.
2) On course medical bike team and paramedic
Visible, in good number, and professional.
*Thank you to all members of the medical staff part of the event.
3) Announcer at the finish line
Named runners coming in great fashion for all.
4) Photographs
Fine job by the Cie who covered the event to take pictures of the runners.
5) Course
Mostly flat, Ottawa (Ontario course part) is enjoyable.
BAD
6) Very disappointing expo (for this race size)
No sweat bag handed by the organization, concession booth not ready for runners, almost no tasting or free sample handed, small.
7) No porta-potti at the start line on Elgin Street.
UGLY
8) Road course security
8.1 A police officer in Gatineau let a car enters and crossover the 'closed' road while approaching the intersection ending up 1 meter and 1/2 from being hit.
8.2 No famous 'blue' line painted on road to fallow.
8.3 Gatineau roads conditions are mostly disastrous.
9) Crisscross 1/2 and full marathoner course with separate departure
This cause 1/2 marathoners to catch-up slower full marathoners resulting both being in each other way, leading to crash (on right side of the road).
One departure for both events?
10) Water-Gatorade stations
Starting at 26 km Sussex Dr. part I many water stations were either out of Gatorade or simply closed with table fold (Sponge/Gel station volunteers were present)
*Thank you to the residents of the 30-36km New Edinburgh course part for giving Mr. Freeze and home lemonade.
11) After the race
11.1 After crossing the finish line volunteer handed cold wet aluminum blanket and knew about it (told so) // had to hunt dry one.
11.2 NO FOOD, NO WATER / NO Gatorade / NO Entertainment / NO staff event at the finish area (FTR Finished way under the 7hours limit of this event). The Ottawa marathon tent event was CLOSED.
Note: Volunteers at sweat bag tent had pizza box all over while runner starved.
The Medical Students tent was the only one open at finish.

For 107.35$ You make your own mind.

Best organized race anywhere
This is a fantastic race. The course is a good mix of city, suburbs and natural scenery. It is flat and well supported. The oasis were superb; both sides of the road with sports drinks and water. They even gave gels at two or three points in the route. The community of Ottawa and Gatinau really support this race and it shows by the numerous volunteers and lots of cheering public. The city itself is small, therefore most hotels are within easy walking distance to the race site. Awesome experience this year with temperatures around 10C (50F). Recommended 100%

Fans are Spectacular
Well organized and improves every year. Half marathon fills up quickly. Course is Scenic, but the Spectactors make this race memorable. The spectators are everywhere and they inspire you at every mile. Two things that race organizers can improve on: 1)Half Marathon has too many participants and they would be better making Sunday a Marathon only race.
2)The shirts and medals are horrendous. Every runner I know who got one of the shirts or medals made a point of commenting how little effort went into the cheap unappealing race gear and finisher medals.

Always a great time in Ottawa!
This was my second Ottawa Marathon, and the course was slightly altered this year. I don't mind, because the best part of travelling to a new city marathon is learning the layout on foot. The people were genuinely friendly (unlike some places that are friendly for the sake of marathon shoppers as well as runners invading the city for a couple days).
I stayed at the historic Jail Hostel, which meant I had a two block walk to the start, and a block walk back to my room. I found the place by accident; did I luck out or what?! What I liked best about the marathon: so many different people running this event. What does a marathon runner look like? Never assume. I saw people of all sizes, ages, and abilities doing very well. Crowds were very motivational, because at some point your music can only do so much. Those of us who travelled to Ottawa alone and didn't know anyone were thrilled to have people cheer for us. Those are the memories I will always have of Ottawa. If you go, give yourself an extra day to take photos of the Parliament buildings and downtown. It's a beautiful city.

Great organization, fans and overall experience
Very well organized race kit pickup process, and expo was also very good. Easy to access, quick to pick up, and decent deals and exhibitors.
Bag drop was very well run, and took no time at all for drop-off and pick-up after the race (however, I ran sub-2:55, making bag pickup less busy). Lots of volunteers on hand, and you can tell the city truly embraces the race weekend, in contrast to others where such races are seen as a nuisance.
Start area was well organized, and hopping the barricade to get into the front Blue corral was easy :) Plenty of porta-potties at the warmup area, and also included hand-washing stations, and excellent idea, not usually found at many races. Well done, Ottawa.
Marathon course itself was well done, with plenty of water, gatorade and other stations. Sponge stations were excellent to have as well. Road conditions were very good, except for a number of sections on the Gatineau, QC side, where roads were in lesser state of repair, and one later section on the Ottawa side in 30km+ area under construction. Nonetheless, very good overall setup and choice of route.
Fans were outstanding overall - some quiet sections, but understandable given the 42.2km nature. In particular, the final 5km-7km had incredible fan support, when runners need it most.
Best race experience I've had to date - will definitely return.

Great Early Summer Marathon!
This is only my second marathon. My wife and I decided to run it based upon the likelihood of cooler weather in Canada and the great reviews of previous races. As has previously been noted, the weekend was very well organized and the crowds were plentiful and enthusiastic. I am a little biased because I ran a BQ 3:14:59 and made it by one second, so I might be looking through rose colered glasses, but everything about my experience with both the event and the city of Ottawa was top shelf. I will be making the trip north from Florida to race this again.

Well-organized, great crowd, nice T/ bib / medal
One of my better marathon experiences, definitely. The expo was large and well- represented, colorful bibs with runner names were great, tech T was great and race info for runners and spectators was plentiful and easily accessible. Actual race was nice - crowd support was outstanding and medals were nice. 10K and marathon on different days helped multiple family members participate. Fluid stations were well stocked.
Minor improvement possibilities: Chip was old fashioned, nowadays chip in bib is standard. Walk after end of race was a little long (meeting place was convenient).

Top notch
This is only my third marathon (I've run 1 other, aside from Ottawa) so my experience is limited. Nonetheless, I feel that this marathon is probably among the best organized. Wait times - even during peak period - for race packet pick-up was very short. Expo was extensive - although crowded due to it being a huge 'race weekend' of 40,000+ runners. Plenty of water, gatorade, and at least 3 gel stops on the course. Plenty of porta-potties at the start and I saw at least 5 different places on the course (there may have been more) with porta-potties too. Lots of medical teams both on the course on bikes and at various water stops.
Another reason I like this run, is for the family 2k run on the day before. I was able to run a nice short 2k with my 6 year old and with my partner. She ran a 5k later in the day (10k last year). It's a great chance to have all family members involved and everyone can run a race of their liking (they have 2k family, 5k, 10k on Saturday followed by 1/2 Marathon and Marathon on Sunday).
Because this weekend hosts so many runners over two days, I think that the organizers have no choice but to run a tight ship. As such the race is very well organized. In some areas at mid distance, the fans were non-existant but in other areas, the crowd support was truly awesome, particularly from km35 onwards - in fact the crowds helped me through my hellish final 3k's.
My one criticism is that in some places the road quality was poor and I imagine a few people might have twisted some ankles. Yet, compared to my city - which has notoriously poor roads, it was far better.
Ottawa is a marvellous city, lots to see and do and I regret that I didn't have an extra day to enjoy it. I found the people to be rather friendly.
Finally, my hotel, was somewhat pricey. I waited a bit long to book a room (December) and my choices were limited. Also, it took a few visits to the front desk to convince them to allow me to check out at 12pm rather than 11pm, so that I could have a nice shower. (National Hotel - I'm not sure I would give it a great rating).
To conclude: run Ottawa for a really cool running experience.

New race route is the best yet !
New course route was the best ever. I thoroughly enjoyed myself as a pace bunny from start to finish; the runners who ran with me were amazing and I enjoyed our bantering. :)
Highlights
-water and gel stations were excellent
-39km of course dedicated to the marathoners was AWESOME (i.e., we didn't have to share the road or water stations with the ½ marathoners).
-spectator support terrific (esp. the orange slices and freezies provided in various spots)
Areas for Improvement
-Tshirt design better from previous years but still not one that impresses me
-name on bib should be in larger font
-more music stations on course especially in the 'dead-zones' i.e., Western Pkwy and Aviation Pkwy
Definitely a great race and one you should consider (hope to see you next year). :)

Love, love, love this race
This was the second time I have run the full marathon in Ottawa. The course changed from last year, but for the better I think. The stretches along the Ottawa River and Rideau Canal are beautiful and the spectators are second to none. Great support, they were cheerful and encouraging even in the pouring rain. Even though I crashed and burned (managed to finish though) I plan on making this my must do marathon every year.

AMAZING!
The Ottawa Marathon was my first and it was simply amazing! The course is great (although I had run most of it in training), and allows for family to meet up several times if they choose to. The support from the crowd was amazing despite the rainy conditions! Having people cheering for you by your first name (on your bib) is really encouraging!
The organization was well done. I didn't have to wait to use the washroom before the race and there were many many water stations along the course. The finishing chute is a little busy, but it is to be expected with the marathon/half coming in at the same time.
I would DEFINITELY do it again!

Flat, scenic, well-organized race
This is a great race to run for a number of reasons:
- weather was relatively cool for a marathon for this time of year
- overall flat and fast course
- water stations were plentiful and well placed along the course
- Gatorade was not watered down like it usually is in races
- volunteers handing out drinks were by far the best volunteers I've come across in a race yet
- plenty of porta-potties at the start; didn't have to wait long at all in a line
- great finisher's medal
- crowd support was good
- nice small size for marathon - 4,000 runners - so didn't feel congested at all during the race
- half-marathoners start after the marathoners
- race directors were quick to respond by email to questions regarding the race
Hope to do this one again!

Ottawa does it Right!!!
This was a terrific event. The course was wonderful. It was very scenic. The organization superb. Mile (Km) markers at every km. The volunteers did a great job and were extremely encouraging. The best thing about this race were the people. It is obvious that the people of Ottawa take great pride in this event. There were tons of spectators throughout the race even though it was raining fairly hard for most of the event. Especially the second half. They were very enthusiastic and encouraging. Good job Ottawa!!! I would recommend this event to any marathoner in the Northeastern US as a great destination race because of this city and its people.

Fun Race
My 30th marathon! There is nothing like running in your home town. This race was better than last year's with the course changes, increased gel stations and sponge stations. It could do better with cheaper entry fees and more water stations (one every 2 kilometers). Great crowd support (even with the rain) and good runner support at the end. Will do it again but there is room for improvement.

Great race
Had a great time in 2010. Everything was extremely easy to get to and the race organization was good. The weather was near 60 degrees and cloudy. If I had any negatives, it was the stinking hill at Mile 22 that killed my shot at finishing in under 4 hours. There wasn't much crowd support during Miles 18-23, but it really picked up closer to the end. Very flat course - definitely a PR-type of course. I never felt as packed in as at other races either because of the marathon-only start.

Nice race
This was marathon #1 for me. I thought it was great. I have nothing to compare to but there were lots of people cheering and plenty of aid along the route. Everything seemed friendly (I love the Canadians) and the course provided some interesting views at points.

Very interesting race route: it winds through residential neighborhoods, landmarks, farms, and parks. The spectators are present all along the way and are very encouraging. Extremely well organized. Nice athletes' village and family area at the finish line.

A good race, with a scenic Ottawa route
I live in Ottawa, so I know this route well. The first 10K go through Gatineau over rutted and pot-holed streets - not attractive (though going over the bridge back to Ottawa offers a scenic view of parliament and the museums). It is too bad that the race does not run along the better roads along the river before coming back to Ottawa.
The spectators were fun, with some wild ones at the plentiful water stations around the 20K point, and a large crowd along the final part of the route that really adds that needed energy.
The only real downside was the lack of pace bunnies. Unfortunately, the advertised pace bunnies for 4:15 and 4:30 were doing a run/walk training workout from the Running Room and were unable (or unwilling) to actually run the whole distance. If the organizers want to make this an international event, they should ensure that they have pacers who can actually keep a steady running pace - and aren't there just for the Ottawa Running Room crowd.
On the whole, it was a good race. I have run some big races in Europe and hope this one gets even bigger in the future.

Gets better every year!
This was my 3rd Ottawa Marathon and finally I enjoyed the experience! The new course route was terrific and I hope they keep it for next year, but it seems like it changes from year to year.
Crowd support was good. In the sections where it is dead it might help to have music stations set up; many of us don't listen to iPods when we run and a distraction is always welcome, especially when you are running up Colonel-By (at 27K) and then after the Heron Bridge (at 33K).
Running as a pace bunny was a positive experience for me and I just want to thank all of the runners who ran with me for parts or the entire race and shared their stories (struggles and triumphs); I found all of you so inspiring.
I am already looking forward to next year!

Polite and orderly; a well run, small marathon.
The expo gets high marks for ease of packet pick-up, but there was no bag for the schwag and very close quarters. I love the staggered start of the marathoners and half-marathoners. The course was pretty, but often tight and difficult to maneuver past slower runners. Not too hilly, but around 34K, the incline sure felt like a hill. As an American runner, I must say that seeing the "24" sign and realizing that you are only just past the halfway mark is a little disheartening. Great volunteers, nicely supportive crowd (writing your name on your shirt always helps), and I easily found my cheering friends. The end could definitely use some improvement. I would have to agree that the finish seemed a bit farther than 26.2. Towards 41K, I was a few minutes off of my time goal and at the finish, my watch had me off by about three minutes. I was disappointed to find that the chip time had me off time by 11 seconds! The volunteers handing out the medals were asking whether you had run the full or half-marathon and not checking bibs. The food after the race is pretty spartan - bananas, oranges, yogurt and bagels running low. Complementary bag check is nice, but bag pick-up was a disaster, with really long waits. Don't get me wrong - organization is great when it counts, during the race. I'd definitely run again.

Great except one important detail
Really a great show - the organization was precise. I had zero problems with the race expo, the organization of the start, the run, water (etc.) stations, and the finish area. Probably the best organized race I've run; I could not find a flaw. The course was interesting but not very hilly really (yes, there are hills, but they're mostly short and gradual). Perfect running weather this year too.
However, according to my Garmin, it was 240 meters long! I thought that odd, so I checked with 2 other friends who said they stopped their watches after walking around a few meteres after the race and they had 42.5K. So either the satellites weren't working accurately or it was long. Not a huge deal to most, but I was 12 seconds from beating an 8-year-old PB, which I would have broken even if it were only 100 meters too long.

Really nice experience!
Great crowd support, scenic race, only minor hills. Only complaint was that the water stops seemed too far apart at the end of the course. Otherwise a fantastic experience!

FABULOUS course and race; needs more bathrooms!!
This was my first marathon, and I had an AMAZING experience! I can't wait to come back again next year to run it again!
PROS:
-VERY friendly staff and city, police, everyone!
-Crowds were wonderful
-First aid seemed plentiful
-BEAUTIFUL COURSE
-I had no expectations of entertainment along the course, but there were A LOT of wonderful acts - from belly-dancers to mariachi, to jazz bands, and everything in between. It was just so GREAT!
-Passing parliament was one of the most memorable moments for me!
-The countdown signs really helped me rev up the last 750 meters to go to the finish line!
-The road of flags leading up to the HALFWAY HOME archway was really exciting!
-The medal is GORGEOUS!!!!!!!! I AM SO PROUD! :)
CONS:
-There were NOT enough bathrooms on the course. They were ESPECIALLY limited between the halfway mark and where we split from the half-marathoners, as now marathoners were competing against the halfers for bathrooms.
-Fluid stations ran out before I got to them, and there were many people behind me; also, 2 gel stations were advertised, but I only saw 1, so I assume it ran out also.
-As it did for most of the first-timers, it felt like a VERY hilly course to me! The WORST thing is that the tour guide on the bus tours of the course explained that the marathon would NOT be going over the hill this year, so even taking the bus tour did not prepare me for the big hill! I felt really discouraged when I came upon it and realised I WAS going to have to climb it. By the time I was done, I was mixed with the half-marathoners and there was the lack of bathrooms.
-I thought the experimental farm portion of the run was quite pretty, but it felt VERY long and you can't even SEE Ottawa from there. At points, this part of the race felt ENDLESS to me! :P
-The U2 cover band with the female vocalist HAS TO GO. It was TRULY AWFUL!
-Generally, the entertainment speakers were WAY TOO LOUD.
-I was SO HAPPY to see that they used paper cups, but very UPSET that they did NOT recycle anything! Everything was thrown into black plastic bags. We can do better! I saved all my trash for a garbage, and wore Camelbaks to reduce my waste, but certainly we can recycle paper cups!
These are MINOR complaints, which hopefully can be corrected by next year! Overall, this race gave me the biggest sense of pride I have ever felt in my life!!!
Definitely, please add more toilets and straighten out the tour guide/bus situation! :)
THANKS FOR AN AMAZING WEEKEND!

Poor Expo
The course was quite hilly, not as was advertised. I was completely disappointed with the expo. My quadriplegic nephew and mother went to the expo with me . They could not even explore what was there. They had to turn around and wait outside for me as they could not enter; what's with that? No bags to carry stuff in; what's with that? The expo was very crowded, hot and extremely difficult to move around. Getting to the expo on Saturday was draining, as the streets were congested. If you want your marathon to grow, so must the facilities.

I was impressed with all aspects of this marathon
This was my third marathon and by far the best. I didn't find it hilly - slight ups and downs only. The crowd was awesome; in the last 500 meters I thought my legs were going to give out, but the crowd encouragement was beyond my expectations. What a great day. Yes, I did need medical attention and was extremely pleased and appreciative of the care. I will be back for another marathon in Ottawa.

Ran out of food AGAIN!
I've run this event since 2000, and every year it keeps getting bigger (which the organizers love to brag about). But the cost is that, over the past several years, they've run out of food! I'm not the fastest runner, but there are lots of people who finish after me, and if there are no bagels for me, there are no bagels for thousands of full and half marathoners who follow.
Otherwise, it's a nice event. But it's really nothing special - no better than other events in other cities.

Great city, great marathon, new PR and BQ!
I had high hopes for this marathon after a disappointing Hartford in 2009. My goal was to break 3:20 to BQ, but the early weather reports were predicting temps in the lower 80s with high humidity (not good). The race doctor posted a warning about the temps and hydration, but the weather changed by Sunday and the day stayed cloudy throughout, with temps in the 60s - just perfect for a marathon!
The starting area was well organized with plenty of crowd support. I didn't know much about the course, but I was encouraged by the weather I went out with the 3:15 pace bunny and kept my splits at 7:24 per mile. Everyone seemed to be in good spirits, and the crowd really got the adrenaline going.
The course was not flat - more of a rolling course, but not as dramatic as VT City. It always seemed like I was running up or down an incline, and there were a lot of turns and sights to see along the way so the run never got monotonous. The water-stop volunteers were great - super nice and plentiful. This was the first marathon where I got to use sponge stations (a really great idea). Even though it wasn't very hot, it made a difference to be able to clean up and cool off with a nice, clean sponge soaked in cool water.
The music was a mixed bag. One band consisted of little kids playing pop music (cute), another was playing Mexican acoustic tunes, and there was a talented Dixieland jazz group with clarinet and tenor banjo. One rock band was deep into a catchy groove that kept me going for miles, but another near the finish was playing a song with lyrics saying to slow down (a stupid message for a marathon).
I kept with the 3:15 group until they picked up the pace a bit to 7:20, then dropped into my own rhythm and worked on keeping my focus. The crowd was sparse away from the city center, but there were pockets of people everywhere, and it was really cool getting cheered for in both English and French.
Towards the end there was a big bridge we had to cross that was an unwelcome, long uphill just when you didn't need it, but there was a funny sigh at the start of it saying, "This bridge could be much worse, so just get over it." That helped... and for every climb you were rewarded with a welcome downhill to push you back on pace.
The last few miles were tough for me, but I kept hearing people cheering for the 3:20 pace bunny, and I knew that I couldn't let the 3:20 group pass me after all those miles. The last 500 meters felt like 2 miles, but the crowd made it all worthwhile, and I finished with a time of 3:18:59 (BQ!).
Some random notes:
Although the race was well organized, and the spectators, volunteers, and runners were very polite and helpful, there were some exceptions. In the last mile or so, and especially in the last 300 meters, the spectators kept crossing in front of the runners. My wife saw a woman step right in front of a runner who was struggling to finish, and he stopped dead, and had a lot of trouble getting his legs to move again. Thats the last thing you want in the finishing chute. I had to run around a guy crossing in front of me with a bike. Don't they realize how hard it is to just keep putting your feet in front of each other? Another runner stopped to let a woman with a stroller cross in front of him, but he did it with a sense of humor that left the spectator (who hadn't looked first) horrified at her own behavior, and the crowd roared with encouragement for him. Luckily a police officer noticed what was happening and took control - pushing the crowd back to protect the runners trying to finish. This was never an issue anywhere else on the course.
I didn't notice any issues at all with the half-marathon joining the full marathon finishers. I did see a couple of folks blow past me in the last few miles like they were running a 10K, but it wasn't disruptive to the flow or experience.
The finisher's medal is awesome! The best I've ever received. The race shirt is high-quality too.
There isnt a lot of commercialism with this race. Don't expect too much branded merchandise at the expo (there is plenty of stuff to buy, just not lots of Ottawa Marathon items).
Logistics are easy at this race. There are plenty of hotels within walking distance from the start, lots of great restaurants, and the expo isn't far away.
The pasta dinner was a bit over-produced: rich, creamy, cheesy sauces with no indication of whether the items were vegetarian or not (a big deal for me), and some kind of soft drink (flat cola?). I wish there had been some plain pasta with sauces you could add yourself.
If you want to combine a trip to a beautiful city with a chance to run an exciting race, then I recommend the Ottawa Marathon. See you in Boston!

Getting Better!
This was my 23rd marathon and my third in six weeks. The course is not flat but rather quite hilly. The race has its pluses, like amazing crowd support, lots of porta-potties at the start, lots of volunteers and plenty of Vaseline stops, but it could improve in a few areas:
1. More water stations - every 2K
2. Hand-washing gels in the porta-potties (they looked like they were removed!)
3. With the finish line being close to Ottawa U., they should be like the TO Marathon and have free showers on campus for the runners. Just a thought.
4. Bags at the runners' expo! At least let the runners know in advance so that they can bring their own bag. Also, handouts about the warning signs of sun/heat stroke would be good as well.
It was a fun race with good people around. Just a few improvements and this race would be awesome!

Great race but not as organized as other marathons
Really enjoyed this race. I don't think they should advertise it as flat as it's more like "rolling hills" the entire course. The spectators were great; water stations were great. The race expo and the finish line were where I feel a few things could be improved. I think "sweat bags" should be given out at the expo instead of bringing your own the next day. Also, a finders' area at the finish line would be fabulous. I couldn't find any of the people I came here with - and since I'm not from Ottawa, I didn't have a landmark to choose (like others told me they did). The other marathons I have completed (Grandma's and Twin Cities) designate a finders' area by letter. Yesterday was just plain chaos!
Also, and maybe I'm being picky, but I can't help but compare how the food was other races with how it was in Ottawa. (When I finish a marathon, I am starving!!) So I was disappointed in the selection (or lack thereof). Maybe I have higher expectations because at other races they have things like sandwiches, ice cream, chips and fresh fruit - and I expected the same here. Don't get me wrong - I enjoyed Ottawa and the weather was fantastic - but I do think a few things could be improved upon.

Great Crowd; Tough First Marathon
The number of fans throughout the weekend was terrific and perhaps unparalleled in Canada.
This was a tough marathon in 2009 and for my debut:
1) Late May is a risky date for potential heat and this course has a little shade. It wasn't just me - I had a 39 second per K fade from the first 30K to the last 12.2K and didn't lose any position in the race doing so.
2) Merging with the half-marathon course for the last 5K is discouraging. I was 3:20 into a 3:53 marathon fade and had fresher halfers 1:20 into 1:40 - 1:45 halves joining our group in about a 5:1 ratio. Easy to feel trounced at that point.

Beautiful and well organized, with good spectators
This was my first marathon and I am very glad I chose Ottawa. The course was beautiful and I liked the ups and downs of the hills. The spectators were so supportive that they made me teary eyed at times when I couldn't believe I was really doing it! I felt that the volunteers were well informed and positive. The finish was electrifying and I loved the 750M... 500M... 400M countdown signs!! My only complaint was that the medical tent ran out of ice, which I badly needed for my knee by the end! Great medal After saying I would only do one marathon... I think I would do this one again!!

Great Course and City - Must-Do for a Canadian Run
The race is very well done. I live and train in Ottawa, so I am aware that it is a beautiful city and course, and yet when I do it I am always reminded by how pretty it is. If you are coming from out of town, you can stay at many great hotels, in the center of town, all within 0.5K of the start line. No issue with getting exhausted just getting to the start. This year the organizers dropped the hated arboretum loop. I hope that it stays out. Who needs a hilly loop toward the end of a marathon - even though the arboretum is a pretty place to run?

First Marathon
I absolutely loved my experience and I will be back. The course is beautiful. I loved the fact that we run in two provinces!! The crowd at the end is unbelievable. They are the ones who "carried" me to the finish line. Thanks to the organizers and the volunteers; they did an amazing job!!

Great course, organization - get rid of the MERGE!
This was my first marathon, so I cannot compare it to other venues; however, here are the pros and cons I experienced:
Pros:
1. Spectators - I can't fault anyone who cheers me (a stranger) on. The last mile or so was pretty amazing - basically a sea of people on both sides of the road and on the overpasses above. Also, coming into the start of the canal after passing the halfway mark we encountered a wall of noise that really lifted the spirits.
2. Course - Very flat, which was nice as a first-timer. During the race I heard some people complain about the hills, but I'm not sure what they were referring to because there were only gentle rises - definitely no hills.
3. Organization - I'm going to nitpick later about the organization because I think my opinion would have been different had I not gotten lucky with the race kit pick-up. I went on Friday at midday, and I was in and out in under 2 minutes. However, when my wife went on Saturday, she had a much different experience.
4. Volunteers/staff - Virtually every volunteer I came into contact with was willing to help as best as they could. And the water/Gatorade station workers were great - I never had any issues with getting fluids, etc., though I was near the back and most of the runners around me were pretty relaxed. I would assume things might have been more intense nearer the front.
Cons:
1. Course - Yeah I liked it, but I hated the merge with the half-marathon people with 3-4 (?) KMs to go. Honestly, it was a letdown to run all that way and suddenly have the road get crowded. This may be over-analyzing, but I felt like the accomplishment of getting that far had been diminished. Plus, it more than doubled the number of people at the finish, which was a complete zoo. The merge was the only truly negative thing; I guess the other part I didn't like about the course was the section near the experimental farm, but I was hurting by that point, so I have a skewed opinion.
2. Race kit pickup at city hall - Saturday afternoon, the line was probably five-people thick and 150 meters long. It was pretty nuts. I guess the trick is to go early - no surprise.
That's about all I can think of. Overall, a very positive experience; you can't expect everything to be smooth sailing with that many people.

Amazing!!!
The National Capital Race Weekend is an experience everyone should take part in. We watched the shorter distance races on Saturday and raced the marathon on Sunday. Everything is within walking distance - the start, finish, and expo - which is really nice. The shirt and knapsack goody bag are both wonderful. The course is fairly flat, well groomed, marked, and patrolled by race officials. Beautiful scenery the entire distance. Lots of spectators along the route. Water and aid stations were well manned by amazing volunteers. The race is inclusive to all who want to participate, and the seven-hour time limit allows it - just choose your distance and method. We had ideal weather conditions to top it all off.

Great first run
This was my first marathon. The event was well put on. For my first marathon, I found it difficult due to what I consider hills, but others may not agree about the hills. The support from the spectators was much more than I imagined. I will be doing this one again next year and am determined to cut an hour off of my time. Stay tuned for my comments in 2010.

Enjoyable course, highly recommended!
Its a really nice course that takes you around a giant loop of Ottawa and the Hull in Quebec. You don't even feel the small hills in the beginning; you do notice how Gatineu (the Hull) appears like a ghost town at 7:00 a.m. Not only are there no fans at this point, but nobody was walking around either. But once you get out of there, it gets better. There's a killer bridge around KM 32 that just drains any last kick out of you. Other than that, it's a fairly easy course, though it's fairly windy near the water. Fluid stations are sufficient, but they rarely had any porta-potties nearby, forcing this runner to head for the bushes. They did hand out wet sponges twice in the final half, though, and it was amazingly refreshing. Tons of spectators towards the finish and several miles before the half splits off, so you're not bumping into the slow ones at the end. It's really quite an experience, and I highly recommend it. The whole city is in the spirit of it, as over the race weekend there are 7 races with 35,000 participants.

My favorite race so far!
I love the Ottawa Marathon! I have now run 3 marathons in the Ontario-Quebec region and it's by far my favorite. There are organizational issues with it (lack of porta-potties, etc.), probably just due to the sheer number of people that run it, but what the race lacks in organization, it makes up for in course. It's a little hilly, but not overly so - just enough to make the course more interesting. I like the fact that you get to cross over to Quebec for a portion and also the fact that the course is not out-and-back.
Spectator support is hard to come by for the majority of the course, but when it's there, it normally comes in the form of crazy Quebecois dressed up in costume!
The race seems to be one of the biggest in Canada and I like the fact that so many people run it, but due to that, starting corrals need to be better organized next year.
Overall, excellent race; I'll definitely be back in the future!

Great race, very friendly city!
My first marathon and my very first race, and everything went very smoothly, from picking up my race kit to the end of the race. Their website is very informative and a must-read for newbies. I can't imagine finishing the race without the cheers of the spectators, the beautiful scenert, and the friendly volunteers. Overall, the city is a great place to visit, and a great place to run your first marathon.

Great race and city
Race was extremely well-organized, with great volunteers and fans. Weather was on the warm side, but scenery was nice. I actually liked the half merge at the end. It was nice to feed off of the half-marathoners' pace as your legs get a bit heavy. The talent of the field is impressive, with strong average times. The city is very pleasant; it has friendly people and and it's easy to get around.

Very Enjoyable Marathon
Ottawa is a great city and this race is an excellent showcase. The course winds by beautiful houses, takes you along a scenic canal, through some interesting parks, and finishes where you started - in their eclectic downtown. I only have 2 suggestions: 1) Remove the Quebec part. There were virtually no spectators and the course was on barren city streets and 2) For us metrically-challenged Americans, add a few MILE markers - like every 5 miles at least! Perhaps best of all, Ottawa must have more Irish bars per person than any city but Dublin.

Race Weekend: Keeps finding ways to get better
I may be biased, as this is my hometown marathon, but I think this is one of the best running events in Canada. This year over 32,000 runners participated in the events. This year they added a kids' marathon, with grade school kids training 41K before race day and then running the final 1.2K. This year they tweaked the start time of the half marathon to address merging problems with the marathon (I think it worked!!). This year they moved the running expo to the Cattle Castle, a wonderful historic building by the canal, and added a concert on the Saturday night. My message is that they keep trying and innovating to make a great event even better. The organizers really care about making this event a success. The course for the marathon is a nice mix - what I would call an honest marathon course - giving a good tour of the city. Weather was perfect this year - a little warm at the end - mostly because of the cool weather leading into the weekend. Crowds were fairly good; there were some spots without them, but then again it was early Sunday morning. The bands and the dancers along the way were great. Someone said they couldn't find the pace bunnies. They were there with great big signs and rabbit ears in all the events from the 10K, to half marathon, to the marathon (perhaps it is time to eat some carrots). Bottom line: great race.

Great race, but where was my pace bunny?
This was a great weekend and experience. I highly recommend it to anyone coming from the U.S. The expo and Athletes' Village were well organized, the crowd support was sporadic but very enthusiastic, and the mix of French and English made for a very interesting race. My one complaint is that when I arrived at the start line and looked for my pace bunny, he/she was nowhere to be found. My wife ran the half marathon and had a similar experience. I understand that many races do not have pace bunnies, but if they are promised, it is a real disappointment if they don't show up.

my first half - very fun
Fast course (I trained in cold and hilly north-western Ontario), and great people in Ottawa (and Hull) helping out and cheering. A few quiet spots, but what do you expect? The last few miles offered a steady roar from the crowd and this is the only reason I was able to finish - thank you, everyone!!
This was my first half, although I've cheered at others, like Grandma's in Minnesota. Gatorade and sponges were great, but water was a little fishy at spots. They gave some kind of GU/gel that I didn't use. I also seem to remember some folks handing out PowerBars at the start line. Love the belly dancers around 11KM. One of the musical bands along the course had quite a sense of humor. "On the road again?!?"
I came with my wife and two young boys and there was lots for them to do. There's even a kid's fun race, if you're so inclined. Also, there's some kind of play center for them off of the finish area. The course layout allowed them to see me three times while traveling on foot. They say "more washrooms, please." I tend to agree, but the cops turned a blind eye to watering the bushes. At the start, if I had arrived earlier I would have found more washrooms a little farther from the start line.
There was a bottleneck in the last few miles, as well as a complete traffic jam just past the finish line. And the family wasn't allowed to come see me in the recovery area, but I'm told this is common at many races. Oh yeah, and Ottawa is not a cheap place to stay.
With an earlier start to the full (7 a.m.), I was able to see them take off before my 9 a.m. start. Speaking of starts, some of the corral signs were confusing because arrows on one side of the road pointed in the opposite direction of the signs on the other side of the road. I was mid-field anyway, so it didn't matter too much. They let me line up wherever I wanted.
I heard one of the days was crazy at the race kit pick-up. The day/time I was there was no problem, though.
Overall, I loved it. Thank you to all the volunteers and friendly runners!!

Expo a nightmare, start corrals a zoo!
I have never seen such a poorly run expo/race kit pickup. Getting the chip and bib was good, but the t-shirt pickup involved elbowing your way through a mass of people, in no discernible lineup. I didn't elbow for ten minutes or so, and after realizing I'd never get to the front that way, since everyone else WAS elbowing, I had to do it too. Highly stressful, especially with the volunteers screaming at each other about which bags go to which runners.
The start corral signs (for the half, at least) had their arrows going in the wrong direction, such that the fastest runners would be at the back, but since people just lined up wherever they felt like it, I suppose it wasn't an issue. Except it was, somehow.
I'd heard really good things about this race, and the race itself was fine, but the chaos the day before really left a bad taste in my mouth.
I bring my own food/drink, but my sister told me one of the aid stations provided HOT water. Oops!

Great course, but weird water
This was a great marathon - well organized, with plenty of support. I have one question for others who ran it. I had a cup of water at the water station by the Museum of Civilization and the water had a sour taste and it upset my stomach. Did anyone else have this experience?

Fabulous Day! Fabulous Marathon!
What a great course! This is by far one of my favorite marathons. I think I will come back to Ottawa every year to return to my Canadian roots and run this great event! My sole complaint is the bottleneck with the merging of the half and full marathoners at the finish line, and then the bottleneck to get through the runner's village - that was a nightmare! Otherwise, fabulous!

Awesome race!
This was my first half-marathon and I had a blast. The people were friendly and up-beat. The crowd was amazing. I was really glad to have started the race at 9:00 a.m. I can't imagine running in the heat any later than that! A real memorable experience!

Wonderful, just needed a few tweaks
This was my second marathon. I had a great time and really enjoyed the City of Ottawa. I would highly recommend this race! It is worth a trip.
Pros:
1. Great crowd support. Having my name on my jersey was a plus.
2. People cheering in French and English! A great international experience.
3. The beautiful parliament buildings. Think French Gothic architecture meets Big Ben. (You would swear you're in Europe!)
4. The crossover into Quebec and back had amazing views.
5. The park loop provided a lot of shade.
6. The tech shirts are awesome.
7. Best marathon medal I have seen.
8. Lots of fluid stops.
9. The City of Ottawa was an excellent host.
Cons:
1. I think the chip 20K marker was actually at about 21K. There were two 20K signs. I got really confused about my pace. I am still confused and I think something was mis-marked
2. The Carleton University section of the course became boring. I would have enjoyed staying in Quebec for longer and shortening that loop.
3. Could have used better post-race food.
4. Needed more porta-johns.
Overall, really nice job, Ottawa!

Thank you for such a great event
I ran the half, and I've got to say that the organizational aspect of this event was great. Everything was well thought out and executed to a tee. A big "thank you" to all of the hundreds of volunteers and sponsors; without you, there really would be no event. This is a win-win for the community, as well as the participants. I will be back. Cheers...
Only suggestion for next year is more porta-potties for the athletes in the athletes' village. There were huge line-ups before/after the race. And I vote to keep the athletes' village closed to racers' friends/family. Theres enough scarcity of space and services already without having to cope with thousands of more people visiting the runners. If an athlete needs a hug after the race, hug one of your fellow participants. I'm sure they could use some lovin' too. LOL.

Well Supported Canadian Race!
This is the third year I've made the trip out for the marathon weekend and the first year I did the full. I had a great experience this year. This is one of the best organized and supported races in the country!
There are plenty of small races, so if you're not interested in crowds, this race isn't for you.
The merge with the half in the last 4K is a great compromise after the last few years (ran the half in the previous two, which changed due to the incredibly hot, rather dangerous conditions in 2006 - when I think every medic I saw on the course was overloaded).
It is annoying for a full marathoner to get stuck in the crowds with the half runners at the end for chip removal and food (which we skipped this year due to the line-up), but I still thought the race was great!
The early start is perfect for the end of May when the weather can be hot. There were lots of spectators in the 10-20K range when we went through Sandy Hill. Just the thing to pump a person up. It got quiet around the 25-30K mark where it's away from the residential areas, but thankfully the aid stations were well-stocked and organized! I happen to remember a Mardi Gras theme from the hospital social workers around kilometer 24. I realized how fantastic the volunteers were. They woke up really early and didn't get medals for their efforts!
By the time we crossed the canal, I was really suffering, but there were sponges, which felt great to squeeze all over myself. The crowds really picked up again for the last 5K, although I was too exhausted to appreciate the sheer volume of people cheering!
If you do your hill training, you won't even think that this race even has any - except for the bridge at kilometer 32. The rolling hills in Gatineau are early enough that the legs are very fresh!
Thanks for the crowd support and all of those volunteers!!!

boring course, spotty crowd support
The organization was fairly good and the course was fairly flat. Nice city to visit. However, I've seen enough of the Rideau Canal to last me a lifetime. In other words, a boring course that simply runs along the canal for almost the entire second half. I expected more from a capital city marathon. I would have preferred that more of the race was actually run in the city, and not along the canal.
Very little crowd support with the exception of the last couple of miles or so.
Expo was okay, but if you're coming from the US forget about getting good deals on anything. The prices were through the roof on just about everything. The running clothes and shoes were about double what you can get them for in the US.
Finish area was a zoo, food lines were extremely long, but there was a Starbucks right across the street, so I went there for refreshments.

Beautifully done all around
What a great day! The weather at start time was perfect, with a beautiful course. It got a bit warm at the end, but the sponges at the water station were a lifesaver. The only negative was the very silly closed-off runners' village, which made it very difficult to find friends and family at the end.

Disappointed with the merge
I last ran this race is 2001. I had heard so much good about the course and loved it - I would have given it a 5 if not for the MERGE. I was on the course for a BQ (missed by 35 seconds), but with the added people from the 1/2, I could not get around enough people (at one point had a group from the 1/2 running almost across the entire road who only moved after being berated by a number of us stuck behind them). I much preferred the 2001 edition.

It's run like a military operation, except the focus is on fun.

Best Marathon in Canada
What an amazing day and course - over 32,000 runners were there this weekend, with 3000+ in the marathon. Volunteers were amazing, the expo was great, and they have a beautiful, fast course! They had live tracking and text notification. I will be back in a few years - this is a PB course.

Good until you reach the finish line
Good:
- wonderful course, fairly flat with minor hills to break the monotony, nice scenery
- great volunteers
- many well-staffed water/Gatorade stations
- sponges, gels, Vaseline stations
- great crowd support, especially in certain neighborhoods
- 7:00 start worked out well because it got hot as the day progressed
- Great expo
- Great technical shirts, different for all events, and gender specific so women actually get women's shirts
Needs improvement:
- crowded start could be improved by waiting a minute or two between the corrals
- there could be more port-a-potties
Bad:
- Finish line was a nightmare. Merged with the half marathon means the 4:00 marathoner compete for space with the 2:00 half-marathoner and so forth
- anti-climactic finish: too many people, no one announces your name, no one gives you a medal, no one gives you a blanket
- tired marathoner have to open the water bottle packages themselves to get water. If you miss it then, there is no more
- big bottleneck after the finish to remove chips, even though there are enough volunteers (the ones at the end are not busy)
- to get your medal, you have to find a volunteer with the right medal (once again, because of merger with half and full) and they don't put it around your neck - they just hand it to you without so much as a congratulations
- then another huge bottleneck to get to the food tables - and by the way, there was no more water
- post-race food was inadequate; my table ran out of bananas and bagels (the only thing they had were oranges, yogurt and some granola bars).
- I never saw the mylar blankets - they were apparently right at the finish but you can't go back. No one was handing them out and they were folded in little plastic bags, so as a result, most people did not get one.
After a great race, it was the most annoying, frustrating and anti-climactic finish ever. I would think twice about running again in the current format because of the finish.

Great race, but where are the fans?
Challenging race - lots of hills in the first half. Lots of Vaseline stations. Some of the bands left early. The fan support was non-existent in the Hull side and very patchy on the Ottawa side. Overall, a great experience. Maybe more porta-potties from 20 - 30 KM, and water stations every 2 KM.

Org. gets 4 stars due to the merge and finish.
Loved the 2007 race. Enjoyed the trip to Hull/Gatineau, including the hills. Due to the cold weather I had to run fast to stay warm. It worked - a PB!
However, merging with half marathoners did slow us down and finishing photos have them under marathon times. The split finish of some years ago worked better for all, I think.
As well, there was a delay at the finish - the 2K race perhaps? We were cold and wet and the holdup did not allow us to pass through the food station or outside. Small glitches that can be corrected.
Thanks for a great weekend!

Did it last year and can't wait to again!
Did this race last year and just registered today to do it again this year. And I can hardly wait. That's how much fun this race is.
I gave the course a 3.5 rating because although Ottawa is a pretty town and running through the old city and along the canals is quite nice, there are some less attractive and somewhat hilly sections in the short Hull, PQ, sections. Realistically, not every mile in a marathon can be stunningly scenic. I'm considering a "5" course a pretty high bar, such as Napa, or London, etc. A "4" rating a major city like NY or Chicago and a "3" your average city race. So "3.5" is better than average, but not a destination for scenery alone.
What really blows us away about this race is how well organized it is, how there are multiple events to take part in and how all the details have been thought through. Definitely a 5 plus. This is one of the few Canadian races with "really big" corporate sponsors and it shows. That they manage to hold onto these sponsors year after year is a testament to the quality of the event, I think. The expo is big, the shirt is very nice and there is no shortage of volunteers or supplies at the water stops. Having the 10K the night before the marathon is great, too. My fiance runs it so I can watch in the evening and is free to watch me the next morning. It's also very cool that they planned the family fun race for the same time as the 2-4 hour half and full marathon runners are finishing, as it gets the crowds out to the finish area and everyone is energized and engaged.
I gave spectators 5 stars because races in Canada don't typically get many spectators and Ottawa really comes out to support this race. Last year it poured rain and there were tons of happy, cheering people - far more than one will see in Toronto (I'm a Toronto resident and our citizens are renowned for their apathy toward anything but hockey....) A really, really, tremendous experience. Definitely one of Canada's best - if not THE best.
My only grudge would be the online registration interface. This year it has been outsourced to the Running Room and it is a pain in the #$% to use. Far too much marketing-related data collection on the part of that vendor.

Excellent event but the "merge" is a pain
I second the comments about the merging of the half-marathoners and marathoners in the last 3 - 4 KM. The previous version of the race was great, with the half starting at 10 a.m. Otherwise, it is a first-rate marathoning experience!

Great Course but the MERGE is awful
Ottawa Marathon is a great experience but the MERGE in 2007 was a hugely frustrating and disappointing experience. I was slowed considerably.

A great race, but too few t-shirts and a bad merge
I had an absolutely fantastic time at this race, finishing my second marathon a remarkable 39+ minutes faster than my first. The course was fantastic, and as an American I was truly pleased to see the wonderful support that the people of Canada provided to this race (and to foreigners like me running it).
Two things to improve for next year would be ensuring that you have enough of the appropriate sized t-shirts for entrants (when I got to the expo they only had smalls left), and rerouting the marathon and half-marathon courses so they don't merge the way they did. On the t-shirts, I was told to e-mail the race director and he'd ensure I'd get a t-shirt that fit; well, I e-mailed him but never heard back. On the course, in the last 5K of the race, pushing an amazing time and running negative splits, I was forced to slow down significantly to try to navigate around what seemed like thousands of suddenly appearing, much slower runners. Definitely a serious problem when you're attempting to run a PR... I wonder how much faster I would have finished if I hadn't had to dart around people and constantly waste energy asking slower people in front to excuse me.
All in all, though, a truly great, scenic, flat, fast, and fun race. I look forward to running it again (since I'm sure these problems will be fixed).

Great race
My second time running Ottawa, and I loved it more. The course was better - more in Quebec, less switching around in Vincent Massey Park. I could still do without the turnaround in the arboretum. Finishing with the half marathoners (they started earlier this year) made the finish line more fun if you like having lots of people around (I did), but better traffic control in chip removal and the recovery area would help a lot. Maybe because the 1/2 was finishing at the same time, there seemed to be a lot more spectators. The rain was a nice change from the brutal heat of last year.

Bring back the old half-marathon route!!
I'm really disappointed with the new half-marathon course. The first 10 KM, run mostly in Hull, Quebec were boring and downright ugly. With so many beautiful routes in Ottawa I can't imagine why they thought this was an improvement. I love Ottawa, and the organization is great, but it's not worth running again unless they bring back the old route... please!

Race was awesome!
This was my first marathon, but I have run the Ottawa half 3 times, and the old half and marathon courses used to be the same since the marathon used to be 2 loops of the half course. So the opportunity to run the new single-loop marathon course was great.
The new route is lovely and the rolling hills in the early part of the course make for nicely varied running. While the route isn't lined beginning to end with spectators, pockets of spectators create wonderful pick-me-ups along the route. Some neighborhoods have adopted the race, turning it into a breakfast block party cheering the runners as we passed by. One of the biggest highlights this year was getting to high-five former Prime Minister Jean Chretien who was cheering the runners as we passed his house. (How cool is that?)
Weather for the marathon this year was cool and overcast with rain towards the end of the race (or second half for us slower runners). The volunteers were awesome, particularly since most of them were terribly cold in the wet conditions. Aid stations were well placed and port-a-johns at the aid stations were very nice to have.
I loved this race and smiled from beginning to end. The medal is heavy and very nice. I finished just under the 5-hour mark and the finish line was still firmly in place and well staffed. (The marathon now has an 8-hour time limit.)
Small areas that could be improved: congestion on the course when the half and full marathoners merge, lack of an XL shirt, and the lack of space blankets when I finished.

Satisfying
This was my 1st marathon, and I found this a fulfilling experience. Ottawa is a beautiful place and the route is gorgeous. The 1/2 marathon merge onto the full course was a bit discouraging for a back-of-the-packer like me, as fresh runners zipped by me. The spectators were amazing - how often do you get a personal handshake and well wish from a former Prime Minister (Jean Chretien). My only big complaint was the lack of resources at the end of the race. It rained for the last half and upon finishing there were no "space" blankets yet because volunteers were using them to cover their bags and coats, so there were a lot of shivering people. Also, the post-race food left a lot to be desired - brown apple slices and yogurt. Don't know if I'd run it again, but that's more about wanting to run many different races.

Still Great... But Changes Didn't Work Out
I very much enjoyed this year's race, but in my opinion they should scrap all the changes for '07 and go back to the way it used to be.
The new course is still mostly scenic and fairly fast, but I felt that the extended section in Hull didn't add anything and was pretty dull. Not awful, but why change something from great to average?
I think the marathon and half marathon start times made it so that too many people finished concurrently and the finish area was way too crowded. I would prefer to have everyone start together than finish together. My tired legs couldn't handle the congestion.
It's still a quality race and I plan to return because of the great buzz in the city that weekend, the nice course, the ample course support, and the supportive crowd. Just needs a bit more (or less) tweaking.

Great weekend - one improvement
As always, a great weekend and a very well organized event. However, I stayed to watch the awards for the marathon and half marathon athletes. I was somewhat shocked to see disabled athletes having to negotiate stairs, as small as they may be, to accept the awards. Perhaps you could take this into consideration for the awards ceremony next year.
Thanks again.

Awesome experience but we need walker results!
The Ottawa run weekend is an amazing experience! I've run the 1/2 marathon in Ottawa 3 times, but an injury had me try the full marathon walk this year. The course was great, the race is very well organized, and the spectators were encouraging and out there, even when the rain continued throughout the event. This year it was nice to see that this race encouraged walkers, and identified us with our own corral. However, unfortunately, the results of the race do not show any walker results. We are all grouped together with the marathon in general, which is quite disheartening. Would love to see these results!

Crowded merge with half marathoners
The course was excellent, the entertainment and fans were fabulous and the water stations were well-staffed and well-stocked. My only complaint was that I found myself merging with 1/2 marathoners running at a slower pace within 3 KM of the finish line. I got caught in the traffic jam and was very frustrated because it was impossible to maintain my pace. The finish was a big disappointment because it was a mixed bag of runners from the two races. I felt a bit cheated....

Great Course, Great Energy - Love the NCM
This was my first time for the half in Ottawa (did the 10K last year, and have done the Montreal Half). I thought it was GREAT. Well organized, good energy from spectators, nice course. Lots of water stations. Only thing that was a problem (and typical of other races too) was the backup at the finish line. Coming to a dead stop at the finish line because there are so many people finishing, my body turns into one giant cramp. Just want to hurry up and get through the finish line and get going. I wonder, can they get a wider finishing area or something?

Enjoyable and fun!
This is my 4th marathon. It was also my 1st time doing Ottawa, and not my last time either.
Only issue I had was the marathon expo being out in what seemed to be nowhere! It was quite a pain trying to locate it, and for such a small city it took a shocking 90 minutes to find.
I found the course route to be enjoyable. Few hills but not that bad. Running surface was mostly on the paved road. No cobblestones, no trails. The 7:00 a.m. start time makes it a bit tough for the spectators to come out and cheer, but is a great time to start a race. At least that way you beat the sun and the heat, have the rest of the afternoon to see the sights. I also enjoyed how the 1/2 marathon and the full marathon courses crossed. At times I found myself running along with these "fresher" 1/2 marathon runners, which got me to kick it up a notch.
I would recommend doing the race to anyone. It was a lot of fun - and especially fun to watch the 5K and 10K the night before.

very good
This is a very good marathon. I have run New York, Toronto and Mississauga, and this is my 2nd time running Ottawa. The atmosphere on Saturday for the 5K and 10K is amazing. The organization is first-rate and the aid stations are fantastic. Yes, the first part is a bit hillier than before, but nothing to fret about. Overall, this is a fantastically run marathon. I will definitely pencil it in with New York (if I can get in) every year. It is the premier Canadian marathon.

Could be better
I ran the half this year. Negatives: 1) The course isn't exactly flat, especially the portion that runs through Quebec. I would describe it as "gently rolling." 2) Although I pre-registered by several months, they had no shirts in my size at packet pickup. They apparently do not reserve shirts for those who pre-register and give away whatever they have to late registrants. 3) They moved around the corrals at the last minute to adjust from the full to the half marathon. This was poorly organized and resulted in a very unorganized and potentially dangerous crush of bodies at the start. Positives: a beautiful course through a beautiful city with a great crowd. With a little better organization, this could be a much better experience.

The BEST Canadian event I've ever done
Just got back from running Ottawa and I have to say that this is *the* best running event I have ever experienced in Canada - and that includes Ironman Canada, which is run like a well-oiled machine. Everything about this event was well planned, well managed and effectively delivered. I really got the feel that the directors approached this event from the standpoint of runner experience first and then designed everything else around it. The expo was huge (for a Canadian race) and well organized and kit pick-up was quick and easy. The weekend was full of a number of events from 2K family walks to 1/2 marathon, so there was something for everyone to participate in. With over 30,000 people participating in some run or walk event over the weekend, this strategy obviously worked.
Race-wise, as far as some of the other comments posted below, either things have seriously changed or these people are just plain grumpy, hard to please and should take the stones out of their shoes. The course does have some hills. So what? It also has A LOT of long, flat and long, steady, downhill sections. The hills it does have are short and painless. The course is closed and the police are very adept at controlling the traffic situation. The reason I gave it a 4 out 5 is because Ottawa isn't an "A" city like Paris or New York, etc. There was a huge staff of volunteers - all quite happy in the pouring rain - and the feed stations were well run and well stocked. The spectators were plentiful and very engaged (unlike Toronto spectators) and stood out there all morning getting soaked. For those expecting the crowds of big US races, remember that this is Canada and we have small populations - a few thousand spectators constitutes an excellent turnout - so if your expectations are for an experience akin to running through the Five Boroughs, you may want to look elsewhere....
The race end was also well organized, orderly and efficient, with blankets, water, medals and food all received before exiting the gates to meet friends and family. The expo was one of the biggest I've been to and kit pick-up was quick and easy.
Net-net, a great weekend that can involve everyone in your entourage, a nice course in one of our prettiest cities, a lively and enthusiastic spectator crowd (Ottawa is a young and physically active city) and an excellent race that makes you feel like everything's been thought of. At no time before, during or after the race, did I have to guess or worry about anything... other than what my finishing time was going to be. Definitely planning on doing this one again next year. It's now become my favorite marathon and my partner loves the 10K course... and we both love the city.

The course this year was awesome!!
The course this year was very nice and less boring because we did not have to wind through a parking lot like in 2006. The course should keep this route for next year. Plus, I think that the runners didn't mind the few hills we got to coast down. The spectators were awesome to stick it out when it came to the rain and continued to cheer us on. The volunteers at the water stations were organized and well prepared for the mass group of runners. Well done, EVERYONE!! Great job!! The organizers of the Ottawa Race Weekend do an awesome job every year!! See you next year. (PS: This is the half-marathon that I am referring too.)

Beautiful course, one major problem at finish
It was a wonderful day to run and the course, even with a little rain, was beautiful and flat enough with enough hills to entertain and keep one honest. Overall, the people of Ottawa were out in force to cheer, though the parts into Gatineau (Hull) saw thinner crowds.
It would have been nice, pace-wise, if the half-marathon had begun about 15 minutes earlier. Where the two courses converge, there are two pace levels trying to run at once.
My big problem: they ran out of blankets at the finish. After running for almost 5 hours (I'm slow!), I really could have used the warmth for my walk from the finish. (I was fairly wet from the rain!) The number of blankets is a simple matter of adding up the number of runners and ordering that many; it isn't rocket science. The rest of the race seemed well organized (many volunteers, good course marking), but this was a serious problem in my mind. I hope the race director can learn from this.

Above average mid-size race
Registration: Simple and efficient
Expo: a bit crowded, use the shuttle buses from downtown, clothing options somewhat limited
Race T-shirt: excellent
Pre-race support/setup: nicely organized
Weather for 2007: cool, cloudy, a bit rainy for finishers at 4+ hours
Course: mildly hilly, nice scenery, spectator support a bit sparse but weather for 2007 (chilly and rainy) may have kept folks away, water/Gatorade available at appropriate intervals, some of the bands had to leave because of the rain
Post-race support: Mylar warming sheets were a bit challenging to find, food/fluids were plentiful
Medal: excellent
Location: easy to fly into, downtown Ottawa was a bit of ghost town on the weekend, had to travel to some other sites for some fun, stayed at the Marriott - they were very supportive

Hot!
What a weekend. Ottawa is a beautiful city with very nice people, but the heat caught me by surprise. Friday and Saturday were scorchers and Sunday was hot and rainy. This is a new course this year and it's not bad; however there were very few spectators and parts are kind of boring. The expo was terrible. Like a furnace in there and I heard it was just as bad last year. Please, please spend some money and move to a place that has air conditioning! The merchandise at the expo was expensive and not a great variety or quality, but still had to buy some stuff.
The dinner was disappointing - food and speakers, and I would pass on it if attend next year.
I would not recommend this race for new runners as they will find it too crowded and the finish area was a disaster. They lost my bag, there were big line-ups for food and water, and I couldn't find the medical for an hour. The volunteers needs to be better briefed on where things are.

Great Canadian Marathon - and Improving
I would agree that this is not longer a flat, fast course and with the new changes it seems the first half will be a bit hillier. But it is a fair and beautiful course, with a nice tour of most of what is nice to see in the nation's capital. The change in the half marathon start time should address the heat, which was problem with the old 10 a.m. start. With all the events, there were nearly 30,000 runners - mostly in the half marathon and 10K (Saturday night). There is real excitement at the start and finish lines but there are long stretches with few fans (this isn't Boston or New York)... and the early Sunday start means you see more yawns than cheers. Organization is great. It really is probably the best Canadian marathon.

Great event - new course planned for 2007
This is such a great event. I have run it 3 times now and it just keeps improving. For 2007 I see there is a change to the course planned and the 1/2 marathon will start earlier, which is good if you end up running on a warm day like we did last year. The new course extends further into Quebec (French part) and should be entertaining. Definitely worth the trip, as this is definitely Canada's best marathon destination.

Hilly and no one to watch
Three strikes and you're out! This course is better than the old one a few years back but still hilly and with no spectators. The overall event is large, but the marathon only has about 2500 in it and it's tough on the course with long stretches with not a soul in sight. KM markers didn't correspond to my GPS and were off in some cases by 250 feet. The volunteers were all helpful and had spirit, just not enough of them. The expo was the worst laid out expo I've attended. No flow; some aisles were packed and others had no one. Kind of like a big hot (no air conditioning) flea market. A poor selection of Ottawa Marathon clothing was disappointing. This is one marathon I would not recommend for first-timers.

Course could be better
My first and last time running this race. The expo was way out in the middle of nowhere, and it was badly organized with poor traffic flow. Also, you would think that they would put it in an air-conditioned building! Starts early in the morning and there are no spectators on the course except at the start/finish area. They need more selection of food at the finish and should get more music on the course. There was no medical set-up on the course and I think I may have missed some of the mile markers - or maybe they didn't have them? Could be better organized.

Scenic and superbly organized but train for hills.
Everything you read in the other commentaries about the outstanding level of organization and the beautiful course - it's all true. Probably the best urban marathon I've run and I've done 21 and counting. One comment though: this marathon acquired a reputation for being flat and fast years ago when it really was flat (a double out-and-back along the canal). The course changed completely a few years ago - it's now rolling hills for the first half and a steep overpass at 32K. But the flat and fast reputation stuck. This is a beautiful course and a well orchestrated event - well worth running but train for hills.

Overall great day
This was my first marathon, and I know the city and route well. Overall I enjoyed it immensely. It was too hot and I heard from later finishers that water ran out and many people had to stop due to the heat. The expo was good; we met Mr. Stanton, and the deals were excellent. I ran faster than I planned but was 10 minutes short of a BQ time. It is a carnival-like atmosphere at the start/finish area and the crowds were great. There are many different events, so dozens of in-line skaters whiz around the start area.
Overall it was a blast and I hope to run it again.

One of the best!
This race is great for any active family. There is something for everyone and I think the race director and organizers did an excellent job. I am still amazed at how you all manage to pull everything off so brilliantly. Yes, it was hot and there was an unfortunate mix up out on the course, but all things considered, the race was well done. Ottawa is a beautiful city and the Canadians are very friendly. This was my second Race Weekend and this time around I brought some friends with me and we also participated in the 5k walk and run. We had a blast. Keep it up and we will continue to spread the word.

Excellent urban marathon
Great marathon. Well-organized. Nice expo. The spectators were encouraging. Runner support and aid stations were quite impressive including vaseline. The route itself along the canal and Hull were pretty. Two suggestions: 1) More food and apparel options in the expo; 2) More massage stations. The line was about 1-hour wait. After a marathon it could be painful.

Great run...too bad it was so warm
This year the Ottawa Marathon Weekend was unlucky and got warm weather. Living in Ottawa I know from past history and certainly from this spring that the organizers did a fantastic job despite the conditions and I am amazed at the 'heat' they are taking for it :-) ( I am not aware of any organization that can control the weather). I will let people know that the typical weather in Ottawa at this time of year is a high of about 18-20 deg C (64-68 deg F) with about 10 deg C at start time (or about 48-50 F). This years official high was 26 deg C (about 81F) and it might have been close to 20 at start time. Those living here will also attest to the fact that the Race Weekend happened to hit the only warm weekend we had until middle of June.
Besides the weather I again enjoyed my race. I found the entire experience a delight. From expo, course bus tours (hey its free and it was sunny), start and baggage drop off. The finish line was better than last year and watching the guy (random runner) win a car was pretty cool. I think the course is great. A coupled of small hills to break things up but as far as a race goes not many take in all major tourist attractions in a country's capital city! Due to the heat I was wobbly at the end but the medical team is in my opinion second to none. I got support immediately and they stayed with me until they felt I was ok. Considering the unfortunate heat I think the event was even more fantastic and I have great respect for the huge volunteer effort this is.
A lot has been made about moving back to the earlier date. Besides the fact that this year that day was freezing a rain, the more realistic option is to move the start of the 1/2 marathon earlier. That race starts a little late (10:15AM) and would benefit from the cooler hours earlier in the day. I hope and believe the organizers will try and make this happen.
I'll be back.

Nice course... but too late in the season
The marathons in 2005 and 2006 were blistering hot. This year the finish temperature was 28 degrees Celsius and the humidity very high. The marathon was better when it was in early May, when cooler temperatures prevailed. In having it later, its appeal of a fun, warm weekend, with numerous events meant it was not a fast pace marathon. There were not enough blankets at the finish, nor was the food good. I would recommend a spring marathon with a higher chance of cooler temperatures.

Terrible Organization - Dangerously So!
I was very excited to enter the Nation's Capital Half Marathon. I had heard so much about it. Ottawa is one of my favorite cities in Canada, so I was looking forward to this race to achieve a PB!
The expo was excellent and there were genuine deals to be had from the various venders! This was especially so in the final moments before closing! However, this is the best part of my commentary!!
The planned timing of the half-marathon's commencement was irresponsible. Start time was 10:15 hours. The temperature at that moment was reported to be 29 degrees Celsius with a humidex of no less than 34 degrees! As most runners know, this is the worst part of the day to be finishing a run, let alone starting one. I think it would have been wiser to start the half at either the same time as the full marathon (0700hrs) or some staggered time thereafter, i.e. 7:15. While the organizers cannot control the weather, they can at least prepare for the worst possible scenario, and that to most of us, would be heat and humidity!
Notwithstanding the timing of the start, the least the organizers could/should have done was ensure that there was enough water at each station and food at the finish! This was tragically NOT the case! And so, this run to me, was more of a first-aid re-certifier in dealing with the two dehydration/heat exhaustion victims I personlly dealt with out of the 24 I actually witnessed along my journey. The worse part of this tragedy was that on two water tables, there was absolutely NO WATER AT ALL! I actually had to wait 4 minutes for these sweet senior citizens to shunt from a garden shed carrying two WATER CANS in each hand to fill a volatile crowd of angry, weak, and suffering runners holding the empty paper cups found on the station's table! UNTHINKABLE! I actually felt sympathy for the senior citizens caught up in the absurdity!
And, if that wasn't bad enough, as we finished, the "recovery tent" was anything but! The temperature inside was unbearable; the refreshments consisted of hot bottled water; a few remaining cottage cheese and fruit products; very stale bagel particles (which only absorbed any remaining moisture you had in your mouth!). They ran out of most of the other post-race treats ie yogurt, bananas, orange slices! And it was while waiting in line to learn of this disaster, while sweltering in the intense heat of the tent, I felt myself begin to faint... only catching myself at the last second in time to leave the tent and find my relatives outside the finisher's area!
Later I was to learn of the great number of runners who didn't finish the event! I wondered if as a half-marathoner, I would have been better served to have done the full marathon several hours earlier.
I wish to clarify for this forum and its readers that I have yet to run a full marathon. However, I do have quite a few half marathons under my belt. As such, I have never seen such poor organization in all other events combined, as I did in Ottawa this year!
Next year, I hope MAJOR improvements are made! Not to do so would be morally - if not legally - irresponsible to all the runners placing their trust in expectations of superior planning, fluid intake, and post-race recovery!
Ottawa is a great city, full of even greater citizens. This year they were shamed before the running world in so many ways. Too bad! Let's hope event irganizers take note and make changes in key areas for next year! I MAY come back just to see for myself! I doubt I could be more shocked and/or disappointed than I was this year!
Thank you for this wonderful website and opportunity to express my sentiments on this event.

Too much of a good thing
I agree with all the positive comments about this year's marathon. Being a contrarian, though, I will offer up this criticism. The Ottawa Marathon Committee, in their zeal to be all things for all people, offer a mind-boggling number of running/skating events over two days. This was my 30th marathon, and I have never seen so many options if you wanted to run. This must be a logistical nightmare, and the result this year was the disqualification of 14 elite marathoners who missed a turn and were all disqualified. Many were some of the top marathoners in the world. Two teenagers manning a barricade, whose responsibilty was to make sure runners made a turn, walked away briefly to talk with friends. A resident trying to drive home stopped, moved the barricade, and drove up the street. This wasn't noticed until the lead pack of runners ran straight through the intersection (and off-course). Most runners never even realized this snafu occurred, but Ottawa's attempt to be a world-class marathon took a serious blow this year. Maybe they will recover, maybe not.
My advice to them: if you want to be a carnival, continue with a dozen events and expect problems. If you want to attract quality runners and be a serious marathon, limit yourself to a half and full marathon. You can then provide adult supervision where needed and avoid embarrassment. Thanks.

Best Marathon in Canada
I just ran the Ottawa Marathon for the second time and I am convinced this is the best marathon in Canada. Even though I dehydrated at the 30K mark (due to the unbearably hot weather), which made me miss my PB (in fact I was lucky to finish) the vibe surrounding the race is great. I know that many American marathons are bigger and have more enthusiastic crowds, but Ottawa embraces this event and it puts bigger Canadian cities to shame (particularly Toronto). This is a great time and a great race - just keep an eye on the forecast and be ready for a hot day.

Alright course, poor organization
This marathon was HOT! The first half is really nice and shady, while the other half was very hot, and no spectators. I actually got to one of the later water stations and they were out of water! I was told to proceed the next station 3K away. Poor food at the end, a dry half bagel, and warm yogurt. Very poor organization, I won't mention the elite runners going the wrong way thing. This marathon really needs to work on its organization and support. Do another one somewhere else.

Must-Do Race
I spent a fair amount of time surfing this site to find a spring marathon, and am all too happy to give something back to help others make their decision. I think Ottawa is a MUST-DO race, with a little something for everyone.
The course is first rate. Ottawa is a very pretty city, and there was quite a bit of shade on the course. The first half of the course has rolling hills with some small elevation change. It's not a problem if you train properly. Parts of the course had the historical/ downtown section and other parts showed the countryside surrounding the city.
I would say the organization was very good. Ottawa offers more different events in a single weekend than I have ever seen, and when you add up the runners in the distance and sprint races with the inline skate events, it is a lot to manage, and I think they did a good job there.
Ottawa is a small city, and as such, they do quite a lot to get behind the event. Many fans do show up for the race, and while some say they were not animated, it was a warm day for them as well. Plenty of excitement along the last mile or so to the finish.
If you are looking for a race with potential for a PR, you could do worse. I highly recommend going.

It was a very hot, overwhelming race; to try again
The weather was way, way too hot being a Northern Girl. The number of people was overwhelming; it being my first 1/2 marathon. However, true grit - I finished it, though not with a time I was hoping for... which means you will see me again! Hopefully start time can be changed to 8:00 a.m. as the last 2 marathons in Ottawa 2005/2006 were way, way too hot to run in...

A race not to miss
The 2006 run of the Ottawa Marathon has to go down as one of the warmest on record.
I believe that due to the weather many of the course's potential flaws were exposed. The first half of the race is run in Quebec on well-shaded streets whereas the second half of the race is next to the Canal which is fully exposed to the sun. Also, some of the smaller 'built-in' loops could be somehow eliminated (ie. parking lot at 32km or so and one at 36km). Sponges were awesome, what a great idea to help runners cool off, waterstops are plenty and well-supplied.
All throughout the course, I was extremely impressed with the organization and the way the race was managed. Volunteers on the course were first class, rivaling any marathon that I have ever run (incl. Boston, Chicago, Paris). The length of waterstops, the clear signs and screams (ie water/gatorade/gu etc) the runners received from the waterstops volunteers were a joy and made the run that much easier.
After the finish, I was helped by fantastic and extremely supportive medical people, I was greeted with cheers of 'Congratulations' and an abundance of smiles from everyone at
the finish line. The food at the Recovery area (when I arrived) was plenty, runner-friendly with good
variety. Volunteers appeared honored to do the job which in turn made me feel blessed to be surrounded by such an amazing crew.
After some recovery time, I headed back to the finish area to wait for friends/family who participated in the race as well. While waiting for them to arrive, I observed the medical staff at the finish area about 100m from the finish line. They did a fantastic job in supporting the runners and dealing with the heat. I felt that the race was extremely well-prepared for the weather and the organizers and volunteers managed to pull off a fantastic
race where most other races would have stumbled.
The city is amazing and the race weekend is well-supported by the local community. If you live in the northeast US or Eastern part of Canada, this marathon is not to be missed.

Great city to run in
This was my first marathon in Ottawa and I thought it was a great experience. Unfortunately it was hot, but you can't control the weather. The course was beautiful, but the second half could have had more shade. But overall I would do this race again - it was super!

Great course. Need better organization.
This is a great course, however this year's organization left lots to be desired. Nothing in the race kits; no shirts in my size; no food left when I finished. Those of us who register early shouldn't be penalized when we go to pick up our kits because everything's been given out to those doing late registrations. Also, power walking needs to be recognized. Crowd support was great but event organizers not so much - was even told to get off the course because the runners were coming by - even though I had a bib on. Also, when you question did I actually run in the marathon, that's unfair. I'm a marathoner even if I didn't run. So I'll answer yes, even though I power walked the whole thing.

Beautiful city, above-average race
The course is flat and fast but crowd support is sparse in places. Needs more bathrooms at the start line - there were 7 porta-potties for 4K runners. Ottawa was a great host city and a lot of fun. I would recommend this race to my running friends, especially if they are looking to break PRs.

Average marathon
I feel like I should be honest because I have relied on this site in the past. This was an average-to-good marathon with a very small-city feel to it. There were parts of the course that seemed forced to stretch out the distance (e.g., literally running around a parking lot). I have run a marathon in a smaller-size city before and was much more impressed with the course and supportiveness. If you want to run a marathon for the "experience" more than for the "competitiveness," I would recommend other cities before this.

Loved it - except the HEAT
Really well organized race. Great buzz around the city through the whole weekend. Very scenic route, slightly hillier than I expected. Very long, almost imperceptible hill from KMs 28-35. No shade during that portion so, given the heat (28 Celsius), pretty tough going. Pasta party was pretty average, but everything else was first-class: route, crowd support, entertainment, food, medal.

Canada's Must-Do Marathon
This was my third time running the marathon here (plus one half marathon), and my sixth marathon overall. God willing I will run this race 50 more times.
The route is very scenic, showcasing how beautiful Ottawa can be. The first half is slightly hilly, the second half is very flat. This a PB-potential course.
Because there are so many events during the race weekend (marathon, half marathon, 10K, 5K, 2K, and inline races) there is a really big league buzz about the place. The organization is top notch, with excellent volunteers.
The only warning I would give is that Ottawa is a hot city in the summer, and the race has had extremely warm temperatures the past two years.
I give this race my highest recommendation.

Beautiful city, less than enthusiastic crowd
Ottawa was my second marathon ( I ran Vermont City in Burlington last year) and I loved parts of it, and was frustrated by others. The city itself is beautiful and the race course takes you through some of the best parts. However, the second half of the race was out and back around the canal and a bit monotonous (and HOT this year!) Kudos to organizers for a great finish area with support at the ready if you feel ill; however, I was amazed by the lack of enthusiasm of the spectators. I ran by an inumerable number of people who were standing and watching us run by, no clapping, no cheering, nothing (this included official volunteers.) Overall, beautiful, lovely city and great marathon organization (despite the snafu this year for the elite runners! Oops!) but if you are looking for big, loud crowds, pick somewhere else to run.

Nice course, tough weather
But when I decided to run Ottawa, I didn't think I'd be dealing with temperatures in the 70s (F), but that's how it turned out. It was the hottest marathon of the 22 I've run and there aren't any others that are even close.
I was on PR pace for the first 20K or so, but the heat ultimately got to me.
I was on pace for at the half-marathon point, but even to that point, I could tell that I was sweating more than normal. Around 30K, the heat started to kick my butt and my pace slowed. At that point, I was left to try to just keep moving and not worry about my pace. For the first time in years, I actually walked a couple of times in the final 2K.
Another factor, I think, was that there was a lot more shade in the first half than the second half. I definitely drank water or Gatorade at every opportunity, but at a bathroom stop after the race, I could tell that I wasn't hydrated enough.
The city and the course were beautiful, though. There were more runners than I really expected and that made water stations that were a big chaotic in the first half of the race.
Like many races, they had pace groups. I read on the Web site that they called them 'pace bunnies' and didn't understand why. When I was walking to the start line, I saw a guy with a cap with bunny ears and just thought he was being a character. But he was a pace bunny. The bunny ears make it easier to spot them after trying to gather yourself after a crazy water stop.
It was my first race that has kilometer markers instead of mile markers. Although forced the adjustment from shooting for 8-minute miles to 5-minute kilometers, I liked it better because it provides you with more feedback about your pace.
The race organization is fantastic and I give it high marks. The only part I didn't like was what can't be controlled: the weather.

Beautiful city, two races in one, lonely on loop 2
Loved Ottawa, first time visitor. Downtown area is first-class. Really two races - the first half loop from downtown crosses river and goes into embassy area and beautiful homes. Lots of shade. Then downtown again. But then follow the canal for second half and it was full sun, paving, and a little lonely. Keep in mind 2006 race was pretty hot and full sun. Great organization, lots of medics and water stops and so forth. Hope more people try this race!

FANTASTIC, but hot
Running in Canada's capital city is quite an experience. This was my 3rd Marathon, and I couldn't be more impressed. Great organization, fans, event.
It was really hot this year, and the lack of shade in the second half took its toll on everyone.
This course takes you by all the museums, and Parliament as well as the historic parts of town. You pass the largest embassy and consulate buildings and really get a sense of what the city is about.
Probably a difficult first marathon, but still a great course that will not be overly taxing. It got really hot this year that may have made the course seem more difficult, but there are a number of short hills that can drain you in the first half.

A Terrific Marathon Experience
Ottawa is a big enough city to provide all the amenities - great hotels, restaurants and shopping all within walking distance of the start line and a small enough city that the marathon weekend events are a major focus. The course was mostly flat and interesting and well-supported. Loved the sponges! The expo was a great size and not at all crowded. Only two sore points: the first porta-potties were at 18KM and there were only two of them. Also, be aware that pacers are only human and can make mistakes too. Go with a pace group if you choose but do monitor your own progress if your finish time is important to you. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this race to anyone. Have fun!

It's like a runner's holiday!
I didn't run the marathon, as we were in Ottawa to visit our son. I wanted to be part of the race weekend, so I ran the 10K. After watching the beginning of the 1/2 marathon and the end of the full, I got the best of all. I was so inspired, I am returning this year to run the 1/2 marathon. Looking forward to the challenge.

Great for first-time marathon

Good 'un!
How it was....
Course: hard to argue with the Rideau Canal as a venue. Not a trivial overpass crossing at 35km, and a smaller one at Hogs Back (~33km.) With 12 marathons under my belt, I know flat and I know rolling and I know hilly. This was rolling in the first third of the race with some 'punches' later as mentioned. Not bad, just so runners are aware.
Organization was great - lots of water/Gatorade (but potently mixed).
I would do this one again knowing what I know now about the course.

Great Experience
The first half is somewhat challenging but the second one is very flat along the Rideau Channel. Kids cheering us on in pj's (it starts at 7:00 am) and students handing out water and Gatorade by the university. It is a unique experience. Great urban and forest views!

A thoroughly enjoyable experience
I was very impressed with the city and the race experience. I thought the course was the best I have experienced. Being from the U.S., I was surprised to discover that I actually prefer kilometer markers as it gives you more frequent checks on your pace. Pace setters are a plus. I was somewhat disappointed that the weather was warm, but I would definitely consider returning.

A GREAT race to do your FIRST MARATHON!
This was an INCREDIBLE experience! As an organizer for a marathon in Colorado, I know how much work goes into organizing events like this - Ottawa did an AMAZING JOB! A great expo, high quality runner's gifts/Ts, knowledgeable volunteers. The actual run was excellent - the new course is BEAUTIFUL and gives the runner a great sense of Ottawa. The aid stations were excellent, and the music and bands along the run were entertaining! This was my first full marathon, and an incredible experience - I would recommend it to ANYONE!

A world class event
This was my 14th marathon, and my best experience to date. The course was just about perfect, flat and fast. If there were any hills, they were inconsequential. My best race to date by far. The people were very friendly and the architecture and cosmopolitan atmosphere were enlightening. My experience in Ottawa was super. Our hotel was the Fairmont Laurier. A great place to wine, dine and be pampered before the race. I don't like to repeat what I've already experienced, so I can't say that I'll be back soon...but I'm tempted. This is a must do race. Please be sure to put this on your to do list and if you miss it, it's your loss.

One of the best marathons in Canada

Always a great race. The city is spotless with lots of great restaurants and the market is an annual tradition for us. It's great to have such a diversity of musical entertainment along the course. Every one of our group from Moncton were finishers. Our thanks to the wonderful volunteers. Well done Ottawa!

The best in North America
This was my 13th marathon and also the site of my first, the site of my first qualifier, and now the first time I have not been able to formulate a suggestion for improvement. The course is as fair and as flat as it gets, folks (okay, except Columbus, Massey, and Vegas, but a PB course nonetheless). Race medical support was abundant. Separation of athletes from spectators in the recovery area was at last accomplished. A medal from the Canadian Mint. The 7 a.m. start was a good try at avoiding the later day heat, although breakfast with Ally Rono the day after at the race hotel confirmed even the best succumb to humidity. (Elite athletes were justing hanging out over there... cool.) I am satisfied, proud, and I'll be back.

Can't I give it 6 stars?
This is my second time running the full-marathon, in addition to one half marathon and one year here as an injured spectator. It is just an amazing event and a fun weekend.
I personally preferred the old two-loop course due to the mental benefit in the second half of having familiar milestones. However, I can see why they changed the course to incorporate most of Ottawa's main tourist sites. Ottawa is a very beautiful city and the course is a reflection of this. The first half is somewhat hilly, and the second is virtually flat.
The organization is as good as I have personally experienced or even read about. Good expo, great race t-shirt, perfectly spaced/stocked/manned aid stations, and a large recovery area. There is a small army of excellent volunteers that reflect how much the city appreciates the race.
Spectators are very gracious, if a little bit sparse compared to what you might expect based on the general quality of the race. However the final 2 km are downright Chicago-like, making it a memorable finish!!
I would highly, highly recommend this race to absolutely anyone, Canadian and foreign. One of the best things of this event is that there are 5 different running distances, two inline skating events, and from what I understand the marathon and 1/2 are walker friendly. This would be a good trip for the whole family since there is something for everyone and Ottawa is a city worth visiting. I would also recommend the marathon to people who avoid the crowded megamarathons like Chicago, London etc.., but don't want to sacrifice overall professional organization.

The best marathon in Canada. Period.
This is the third time I've participated in the NCM weekend. I ran the full marathon in '03 when it was a double loop of the second half, and the half in '04 which was that section again. Last year they changed the first half of the full course, and I have to say that overall the course is spectacular. You see every tourist site in the city and run through some beautiful neighbourhoods. Any minor, little hills happen in the beginning, with the exception of a bridge at 33K. Overall though the course is VERY flat, with the last 9K being either flat or slightly downhill!!
The race organization was first rate. Water stations were well marked and well stocked, and picking up my race kit was easy. They had WOMEN'S SIZES in the shirts (halleluja!!!) AND they were coolmax! VERY nice. One suggestion, after cheering on runners at the Mississauga marathon, would be to put runners' names on the bibs. I would love to hear spectators call out my name, especially in the tough few kilometres at the end!
Along the course, the volunteers and spectators were absolutely fabulous, providing a lot of inspiration.
The weather has even been consistently good over the years!! I think it would have been hot by the end this time for people finishing past the 4 hour mark or so. Most of the time though, it was quite comfortable.
If you haven't done this race, DO IT. It's a fabulous experience in a terrific city. The whole city gets behind the race weekend (there is a marathon, a half, a 10K, a 5K, a 2K as well as walking and wheelchair events) and there's a great energy.
Not to mention I set a PR... :)

Great week in Ottawa
During the past 40 years, I have participated in small (less than 100 runners) and large (Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona) races. The Ottawa Marathon and its accompanying events have the best organization I have seen. Ottawa is a wonderful and clean city; its citizens were friendly and great hosts; the 2,000+ volunteers were fantastic; the medals were super with free engraving; and the course was fair to the runners. Take the Saturday bus tour from the Expo. It’s a guided tour of the course and the city in a double-decker bus. After taking the tour, my wife and I wished we could stay longer because there was so much more to see and do. This is a must-run event.

Wonderful people, beautiful course, lots of fun.
The entertainment along the course was very much appreciated. The volunteers at the water stops were the best. The crowd cheering us on was inspirational. The number of people and their cheeing at the finish line were awesome. The course was beautiful. The only down side....not enough port-a-pottys. Thanks for a great race!

Scenic course; volounteers friendly; spectator nil
Wonderful weather helped on this scenic route that was 75% park areas; the views made up for the spectators - few and far between (non existent in the parks) NEED MORE TOILETS - only 8 port-o-lets on the 42k course???? Volunteers were terrific and water stations frequent. Not a flat course, but the 'hills' were all manageable. The finish line was full crowd support and great views. Would definately recommend it and would run it again.

Good Marathon
Great scenic course with gentle ups and downs, with very few spectators.
Only 8 port-o-pottys on the full marathon route. This is ridiculous.
Other than that it was good. Lots of water stations/sponge/gatorade.

Superb race! Well organized & nice course.
I ran this race over the weekend, and out of the marathon's I've done (with the exception of Boston, my home town) this was the best organized. Nice course. Great fans and lots of them. I thoroughly enjoyed this race and would highly recommend it. Ottawa is a lovely city as well and worth the visit.

Awesome !!!
I was running this marathon for the second time this year and, once again, found that it was flawless:
- The course has just a bit of small hills to make it fun.
- The organization could not be better: so many volunteers!!! and each of them was smiling, encouraging us and taking their jobs very much at heart. There were first aid volunteers on bicycles checking each of us out, making sure we were doing all right, especially in the last few ks.
- There were a lot of spectators along the course, even at 7:00a.m. when the race started. The end of the race is always so amazing; you feel like a hero during the last 2ks.
You simply HAVE to try this one out!
Thank you Ottawa for making this marathon a memorable one...

Spectacular
Was there in 2004 and look forward to this years (2005) race. So well organized. Just like the big races. Everyone I was with commented about this. In Canada, #1 for sure.

NICE WEEKEND GETAWAY
Enjoyed the course, one of the most comfortable races I have run. Thought the expo was to far from the city (15 min bus ride). Crowd support good in spots, poor in most parts. Finish area noisy, but confusing. Volunteers very friendly. Many hotels have big efficiency rooms.

Absolutely Great Event!
This was my very first half marathon - and what a great experience! Although I trained through the winter, and was surprised with a very warm run day, I found this to be an enjoyable course with great spectatorship and support throughout!
For anyone who is looking for a great first event, I highly recommend this race. The course is relatively flat with beautiful scenery. Although the start line was very crowded (and it added about 2 minutes to my 1K split time), it is quite easy to pick up time and finish respectably.

this year just the 1/2
This year I ran the half-marathon, having done the full (my first) here in 2002. If this is not the best running event in Canada, I'm missing a great race somewhere.
I can't comment on the new full course since it is different from when I ran in '02, but the organization was as smooth as I'd remembered and the fans were very supportive at the end of the course where you need them most. Ottawa is a spectacularly beautiful city and there is just a very positive vibe about this race weekend. Run here if you can.

Great First Half Marathon
This was my first half marathon and it was a wonderful experience. The city is great and the course was first-rate with beautiful scenery. As great as the course was the organization was even better. The major hotels were within a five-minute walk to the start/finish line. There are also free shuttles to take you from City Hall to Carleton University to get your number/information, etc.
Even the weather co-operated. My only minor issue was I wish there were some more bands to help pass the time along. The finisher's medal is first-rate and there were TONS of bagels, fruit, yogurt, Gatorade, etc. at the finish line and lots of water/Gatorade and sponge stations along the route - food, drink and toilets are not an issue with this race AT ALL. This is an excellent first-timers course and I would highly recommend it.

No doubt about it!
Simply the best Canadian marathon.
Ottawa is a city blessed with many wonderful sights and the NCM's course takes advantage of that fact. The end result is a relatively flat course that takes you successively through national landmarks, urban landscape, posh residential areas, serene parks and of course along the beautiful Rideau Canal.
But that is only half of the experience. The NCM is a superb organization that masters every important detail that makes up a great marathon experience. Non-chaotic expo, effective distance marking, efficient water/Gatorade stations and a well-controlled finishing area. The volunteers are cheerful and there are plenty of mobile medical staff and aid stations.
I would say that there is only one thing the NCM organization does not have under its control (apart from the weather): crowd support :-) . One way to put it about supporters: 'THEY ROCK !' From the simple 'high-five stations' by toddlers to the sustained roar of the crowd that can be heard from the 41K mark, there are a lot of touching gestures and kind words intended for each runner, whether you're a sub-3:00 veteran or a first-timer.
Yes, this is truly one great marathon.

Top-notch with little room for improvement
PROS:
- People of Ottawa are friendly.
- Hotels well situated near the start - I left 20 min. before the start.
- Fan support 2nd half when you NEED IT. Fans make you feel like a star.
- Gatorade/water tables well-staffed.
CONS:
- Had to search for my medal.
- Recovery area a little chaotic.
- Race pick-up not near city core... WHY?
All in all, I recommend this marathon. Such a clean, friendly city - Ottawa rocks.

Best day of my life!!!
I ran the Ottawa Marathon and it was honestly one of the greatest days of my life. The course was beautiful, the spectators were amazing and the messages written on their signs were inspiring, the other runners were so encouraging and nice, the course was well organized, drink stations were at the perfect locations, the cold wet sponges were glorious, etc. Everything was perfect! Even the Web site is awesome and I am still talking to people on the message board weeks after the marathon. Thinking about the marathon, running across the finish line, and the countless touching things I saw still bring tears to my eyes.

The race was superb
I agree with other comments that this was the best organized race I have ever run. I didn't even mind the quiet parts of the course because they made the designated cheering areas all the more uplifting. The crowds at the finish were fantastic.

Great to run in our capital
Well done guys. This race was great. Good expo, very easy to get your race kits. Magnificent and scenic course. Running into Quebec and along the Rideau Canal were outstanding. Being Canadian and running in our capital you get the sense of what this great country of ours is all about. So many wonderful buildings to see. Loved the restaurants and the Irish pubs in the Byward Market. Nice to wake up at a sensible hour, walk out the hotel door and run the race. All in all the organizers did us proud. Thank you, and merci to our Francophone friends. No matter where in the great land of Canada you come from the Running Room, Grant and Kenaston, Winnipeg rock.

What a great time in Ottawa
This was my second time running this marathon, and this year was even better than before. The cheering, the organization, the scenic route, and beautiful Ottawa were all well worth the run. I think the organizers handled the huge increase this year really well. I'll be back.

Put this on your list
Thanks to all the volunteers, staff, race director, and citizens of Canada, for a terrific weekend. Ottawa is a beautiful city and race weekend was superb. I have done 14 different marathons and I would rate this one as tied for the best (w/ Twin Cities). The expo was fine, the bus tour of the course was informative and a fun time. The start/finish line was very well organized. The course was beautiful. The volunteers were well prepared, and the tables stocked with Gatorade, water, gel. Fanfare was somewhat sporadic, but those out were participating in cheering us on. The last few KM's were lined with folks cheering. The weather was perfect. The dry release shirt excellent, and the medal pretty cool. I would not hesitate one instant to run this one again or recommend it to everyone. Speed demons can certainly BQ here as the hills are very managable. Do this race, you'll have a great time.

Wonderful experience
This was the 6th half marathon that I have run and so far it is the best.
23,000 people showed up and there seemed to be no ill effect. The volunteers were chipper and helpful, 4 bands playing along the route, nice flat course, nice scenery, great spectators and an organized rest area afterward. I would recommend running this one for anyone.

Great first 1/2 marathon
This was my first ever half-marathon and it was a great first-time experience.
The spectators were great - you rarely went more than a few a few kms (even in the middle) without a least some, and generally lots, of cheerers.
The pace bunnies were a little messed up at the beginning - the slower ones started in front of faster ones - and were a little hard to find at first, but it they got sorted out. Also, my t-shirt is so big that it looks like a dress.
Other than those two minor things, the entire weekend was an amazing experience and I'm already planning to train to run the full marathon next year as my first full.

Loved the course! Volunteers and the crowd support were amazing. Only thing that could make this event better -- improve the water (was it really from the canal?).

Awesome First Marathon!!!!
Ottawa was my first marathon ever and what an enjoyable experience. Being a rookie on the circuit, I didn't really know what to expect, but the organizers, support staff, and even the hotel staff where we stayed did a wonderful job taking care of the group I ran with.
The sports expo and race packet pick-up went very smooth. Runners received a long-sleeve t-shirt as well as a Brooks Dri-Fit short-sleeve shirt too in their race bag.
The course was well marked, and surprisingly, easy to run. A few inclines at the beginning but nothing too difficult. The most enjoyable feature of the race, at least for me, was the opportunity to see the entire city during the race.
Gatorade/Water stations every three kilometers with sponges and PowerGel packs dispersed along the course was well timed. Music entertainment was a welcomed sight; however, we could use 'thinner' belly dancers for 2005.
I can honestly say my first marathon experience was a pleasurable one thanks to the folks of Ottawa. I did begin to pull a hamstring at kilometer #41 and the crowd saw me in pain and cheered me on to the end. Because of them, I was able to finish my first marathon in less than four hours. THANKS OTTAWA! See you next year for sure.

Beautiful... and the best!
My 13th marathon... 9th location (Los Angeles-5x, Catalina Island, Portland, Disney World, San Francisco, Warwick to Providence-RI, Assisi-Italy, Cape Cod & now Ottawa...if it wasn't the best, it certainly was tops!! Most beautiful course on a most beautiful day...I loved it! Outstanding organization & everyone was SOOO NICE!!
The pre-marathon pasta dinner was great...we arrived late but there there was plenty of good food left!
For someone who isn't a morning person at all, I practically rolled out of bed onto the start line...it was that easy! I literally left my room less than 5 minutes before the start & still made it on time. :)
Special touches: two shirts, a cool running shirt & long-sleeve shirt for later, roses for the women, & one of the coolest medals! During the race there was Gatorade galore, much medical aid, and couple of spots distributing huge, colorful sponges...very cool in more than one way! Big ING arches at every 5k was a neat idea...hope they do this at NYC this year! Really nice, encouraging fans, but of course it's not the same as a big city marathon. Yet, Ottawa is very international, safe & clean... would've loved to stay longer in this lovely place, as I love the French/ European flavor. I love Canada!
Suggestions: it was intimidating (and could be dangerous) for us slow (and by then, tired) marathoners, when the fresh & fast half marathoners came stampeding upon us...and, was a bit anti-climatic when crossing the finish line w/out any distinction from the half marathoners. Also, it would be special if right after you cross the finish line someone congratulates you by placing that medal around your neck as they did at all the other marathons I've done, but this marathon had me searching awhile to find out where to get my medal... altho' the medals were definitely worth it!!
Also, it was super wonderful receiving a free, awesome massage after!!! I heard of this at other races, but they always pack up before us slow ones come in...but not this time! And tho' I wanted to give a big tip to my fabulous massage therapist who spent so much time on me, he even declined saying they weren't allowed to receive tips.
Alas, I'd like to express my GREAT gratitude to all who made this such a fantastic marathon...thank you!!! God bless you!!!

One of my favorite marathons
This is my sixth marathon and I would definitely put this one among the top. I have run some of the big ones (including New York and Chicago) and I would rank this one among them. The only weakness is the crowd support. However if a scenic, fairly flat, course that is well policed with aid stations is what you are looking for, then this course is for you. The organizers and support teams were extremely helpful and the organization at the finish for the runners was excellent. I would recommend this to anyone, veterans and novices. I would also add that the downtown area is really geared up for the participants and treated us very well.

Best Marathon I Have Run
I have been a Canadaphile all my life and this races tops the list of things I love about Canada, even above Sarah McLachlan and the BYO restaurants on the Plateau of Montreal.
As context for my comments, I regularly run marathons, having run 4 in the past year and a half (Prague, Detroit, Honolulu and now Ottawa).
The marathon is part of National Capital Race Weekend, a series of races including a 2k, 5k, 10k, half marathon, and two inline skate races in addition to the marathon. In total 23,000 people participated in the '04 races, including 4300 or so in the marathon. It would appear to be a logistical train wreck waiting to happen but the organizers pull it off with true excellence.
The expo is a good size and number pickup is easy. This year we got a nice long sleeve t-shirt and a Cool Max running shirt with the entry fee. At the expo they offered free course tours on double-decker buses that were well worth the two hours on the bus. The guide pointed out all of the 'hills,' 95% of the course was covered on the tour, and we got some historical information on Ottawa as well.
On race day there were several races starting before the marathon, but somehow it didn't seem like the typical nightmare start scenario. I showed up 30 minutes before and could have even showed up 15 min later. There are a slew of hotels near the start, which makes for easy access.
The course is pretty easy. There are a few slight inclines because of bridges and such, but they are not a problem at all. There are a few neighborhoods with a bunch of turns, but again, this was not a problem. There is a lot of scenery. You run through the city, both through Ottawa and French Gatineau side, then north of the city and back. You have great views of the city coming back, and then you head south. You run along a very beautiful river and canal, and even some 'rapids' at Hog's Back Park.
There is steady fan support throughout, with the one exception from about 25-30 km on Col. By Drive. There are several other points in the marathon other than the finish where there are a lot of people cheering for you. There is some good music along the way too: Latin, Alt. Rock, Classical, Belly Dancing, etc.
A few other comments. As an American, I have to say, I love the metric system! You print a wrist band from MarathonGuide.Com showing every km and you have more to occupy your mind and motivate you for the whole race. By the time you pass one km marker, the next one closely follows. It's so easy to keep on pace. There also were big arches every 5km that you could see from quite a distance away. On occasion, the km markers seemed to be a bit off, but I believe that was because of narrow bridges and things like that.
Water and Gatorade stations were every 3km or so. They also had a medical station at nearly every stop, if not every one. There were two points where they distributed Power Gel and two others with sponges.
As far as the city is concerned, Ottawa rocks! There is great food and a lot to do. It is clean and beautiful and the French influence is stronger there than other Canadian cities outside of Quebec, and I think that's a good thing. I could live in Ottawa, and that's saying a lot. I don't understand why so many Canadians think it's a boring place.
By the way, I did a PR and BQed by 8 seconds. But even if I did not I would still be as ebullient in my praise of this vastly underrated race and city. I recommend this race to anyone.

Possibly the best marathon in Canada.
I get a strong impression that the organizing committee is truly committed to excellence with a focus on improving ALL the events in the ambitious weekend schedule. No racer needs feel that their race is merely an afterthought. I loved the fast and flat double-loop but I'm sure that the new course will be as good and realize that many people hated the double loop. I liked the fact that you knew what to expect in the second half. I'm happy to know at least that the second half this year will be that fast and flat half-marathon route.
Not too happy about the date being moved 3 weeks further into May but at least the start time is one hour earlier. The awards ceremony runs like clockwork and I'm very impressed that Eddy Helleybuyck will be a guest this year because, as a masters runner, he's an inspiration. One thing I would love to see is digital clocks at every mile like you see at many U.S. races like the Columbus Marathon, and age-graded results like you see at many U.S. races. While the field gets ever more competitive each year and some locally competitive runners might find it harder to place I think that the depth of the competition has a trickle down effect of creating an aura of excellence and excitement that in combination with the superb organization will help everyone at whatever level to run their best times.

Great first marathon!
This was my first marathon, and after running it I am convinced it will not be my last. Ottawa in the spring is beautiful, and the course was not only through the city but along a canal and through gardens and parks as well, so you got to see everything in bloom. The course is flat and fast, perfect for a first marathon. The crowds were a little thin, but the mass of people at the end was great to come home to. The expo was good (lots of free stuff), and the best part was getting to meet Frank Shorter, who was there as a speaker. One thing I will never do again: sleep in a tent the night before the race to save money. Bad idea! Conclusion: Go to Ottawa. It is wonderful.

The PR says it all
Unlike some others, I LIKE the double-loop course and was a little disappointed to hear they're changing it in 2004.
The weekend has a lot of events, but it's a testament to the organizers' efforts that they run seamlessly together.
The high and low points in my race happened at mile 26 with the finish line in sight. As I plodded along, there was a great roar from the crowd and people jumped to their feet. Strengthened by the incredible crowd support, I brightened up considerably and was a little overwhelmed by the noise. Gee, all these people cheering for me.
Suddenly, this guy chasing two motorcycles blew past me like I was going backwards. It wasn't until later in the recovery area that I realized I had been caught by the half marathon winner (who started 13 miles and an hour behind me).
Oh well, better luck (and a faster pace) next year.

Excellent event
This event got me hooked on marathon running. Good expo, great on-course support, nice shirt. I loved the double-loop course as a first-time marathoner struggling to finish, since you have milestones toward the end that you recognize from the first loop.
Alas, the double-loop is no more, but I'm sure it won't be a challenge for organizers to find a gorgeous running route in this green city.

Doesn't get much better than this
This event has everything for everyone --- a 2K, 5K, 10K, half and full marathon, plus inline skating, wheelchair and walking events. This is truly Canada's premier running event.
My only complaint was the crowd --- the finish area was congested, and a long line to get water after a marathon is not good! As well, some walkers from the 5k got in the way of the marathoners and 2k runners --- but this can easily be fixed. Besides, only a really great event can attract roughly 20,000 people in one weekend.
I'm from Toronto, and I only wish that our city could embrace a marathon the same way Ottawa does with the NCM.

Great Race in a Beautiful City
The Ottawa Citizen National Capital Marathon was my fourth marathon and I found it to be a well organized and executed race.
Runner support from race organizers and tons of volunteers (both during the race and at the finish) were excellent and appreciated.
The double-loop, largely flat, city-street course was beautiful (if redundant!) and crowd support was strong, particularly at the middle/end of the race. Live music was particularly uplifting.
Aside from the déjà vu of the double-loop ('I've been here before and I enjoyed it more the first time!'), the only 'problem' with the course was the lack of race clocks. I was also a bit taken aback when I received my 'SARS' facemask two weeks prior to the race! (I will display it with the nice finisher's medal.)
Great event overall. I would recommend the NCM to other marathoners -- new and experienced -- particularly if the double-loop is eliminated.

Good expo (if a bit too crowded)
Great medal and socks
Affordable and nice city
Cons:
A little crowded after the race
I heard stations ran out for late runners
Race shirt color

Loved it- coming back next year!
This was my 7th marathon, and I enjoyed the actual running of it the best of all.(even over Disney!) I didn't think I'd like the 2 loop course, but I actually preferred it, as I knew exactly where I was on the 2nd loop, making it seem shorter. It felt like it was downhill most of the time, although I know this can't be. The crowds were a bit thin on the first loop, but picked up for the second and were excellent for the last 5k. I had trouble with the first water station on both loops- no cups filled and no volunteers in sight, but the rest were satisfactory. The only down side was the half marathon people catching up to me and passing- Iwas elbowed fairly hard by some old guy that passed me. I imagine it must have been more frustrating for them weaving in and out of the marathoners. All in all I loved the course and the finish line crowd and will be back.

What a way to start!
This was a great first marathon. I knew when picking up my race kit was efficient and I was greeted by friendly volunteers that this would be a good race.
The double loop was good and bad. Great because I knew exactly where I was, but bad because tons of 1/2 marathoners flew by just as I was hitting the 36k wall. But hey, with those tulips, that canal - how could you not finish. Fantastic!
The fans were fantastic. They way out from the core of the city also. Thanks Ottawa.
I was only three minutes off my goal, and I have myself to blame for that - must learn to pace! But what a way to start. Ottawa you've got me hooked on marathons! Job well done!

can this race get any better?
The Ottawa Marathon is the benchmark that should be used for other running events in Canada.
Fluids were in abundance, smiles were plentiful, and vaseline, sponges, gels, markers, guidance, and first aid could not be missed. I felt reassured that had I pushed myself and something had gone wrong, there would have been ample resources available.
The course was great and the vounteers were amazing. There is just nothing that went wrong... ooooh, but why after running 3:28:44 for my first marathon would the sponsor at PowerBar make people spin a wheel before they were given something to eat. Have any of these fools ever run a marathon??
In addition to the race being exceptionally organized, Ottawa is an amazing city to visit. Coming from Toronto, I was quite mesmorized by the city. There is much to see and experience, all within walking distance of all major hotels.
Thanks citizens of Ottawa for having us in your city!!!

Excellent race for first-timers
This was my first marathon and I couldn't have chosen a better race. The course is flat, with just enough rolling hills to break things up. Doing two loops of the same route was psychologically a little challenging, but I understand that the organizers are working on a single loop course for next year.
Overall, the organization was excellent -- kit pick-up was easy, and the race itself started right on time at 8:00 am. Furthermore, the finish line area was handled very efficiently. Course support was great -- plenty of water stops and "porta-potties", tons of live music along the way, and terrific fan support in both English and French. A wide field of participants, but not so many that it felt too crowded. Pace bunnies were a great idea, and I only wish I'd stuck with mine consistently!
Distance markers were all in km's, which made it a little difficult to pace for those of us who 'run in miles'. It also seemed a little odd that there were no clocks at all along the course -- only one person at the 20 km mark calling out times and projecting possible finish times. I used my watch to pace myself, but it would have been nice to have at least a couple of clocks out there.
I wouldn't hesitate running this one again, and highly recommend it, especially for first-time marathoners. Great job!

A great first marathon
I ran my first marathon here in Ottawa, and had a fabulous time. Although I train on the course all year round, I didn't find it boring, as there were lots of spectators and bands. The course itself is beautiful, especially since this is the best time of year to see Ottawa. It's also fairly flat, which makes the run a bit easier for first timers. The finisher's medal was fabulous, one that I will cherish forever.
My only negative comment is that the field of runners was much larger than in previous years, and the great organization of the race was strained by the numbers. For example, they ran out of cups at some water stops, and started to reuse discarded ones. They ran out of blankets at the finish, and runners were required to wait for up to ten minutes in line to get water after the race. This wasn't an issue for all runners; I've talked to some people who finished ahead of me, and didn't have any problems with the organization.
Overall, this was a marathon that I would not hesitate to run again, or to recommend to friends. The race organizers are trying to design a one-loop course for 2004, which would make the race that much more enjoyable. I had a great time running this race. Ottawa is a great city for tourist, making this a perfect destination marathon for visitors and their families. Hope to see you there next year!

Really Excellent Marathon
This was my fifth marathon and my best. It is a really nice course with excellent support along the way. The only thing that was frustrating was the 1/2 marathoners passing me like I was stopped through my 2nd loop. I like the 2 loop format cause you always know where you are at. Keep up the good work Ottawa!

Loved the course and city
I also ran my first marathon in Ottawa and found it to be a terrific experience. The city is beautiful and the people there are friendly. The course was easy to negotiate (not crowded, few hills). I enjoyed the double loop course because it was so scenic. Medical attention was readily available, bands and water/gatorade stops were plentiful, port-a-johns were in sufficient quantity, and many hotels were within walking distance of the start/finish. About the only negative would be the few number of spectators in many places. Overall, a fantastic experience. I would run it again.

Great marathon for 1st timers
This was my first marathon and I must say that it was a great experience. The organization was great. All the volunteers were helpful and excellent in their enthusiasm on the course. As for the spectators, they encouraged each and every runner on the course. For anybody considering running a marathon for the first time, you should check out Ottawa. It's a great friendly city and beautiful during that time of the year.

great course, and generaly a well-organised event
I read in a comment that there were too many spectators in the recovery area and I would say that they didn't seem to interfere with anything. Everyone was well-behaved and all seemed to go smoothly. And it made it easier for runners to get together with their friends, family, etc. It never got overcrowded either. I stayed until past noon (marathon started at eight), left after the presentation of the marathon awards, and still there seemed to be no problem to report. Maybe there were some glitches or worse elsewhere, but I feel some people complain a little too easily. The course is great, quite even (not perfectly but the 'hills' are gentle, rarely steep, most of the time you feel as if there isn't much change to the elevations). It is also pretty, running along a canal in nice-looking neighbourhoods, and around a small lake and back to the road alongside the canal, but coming back on the other side of it. And the spectators, although not always in great numbers, except at the start/finish and where a lot of tourists might find themselves, were impeccable. The goodie bag at the expo was less than full, and they didn't even have plastic bags left when I arrived on Saturday afternoon, but we didn't come here for the goodies. I also set a PR (although my training had something to do with it, not just the course) and generalLy got the impression that this was a well-run event. Traffic was well-controlled while I was there; would run this again, DEFINITELY. Ottawa is quite scenic indeed. Go there, don't let a few bad comments influence your perception or decision to go, not just for the city but for the week-end of races also!

More than the organizers can handle
There were as many spectators as runners in the porta potty lines just before start. There was no announcement to encourage slower runners to locate themselves well back of the front and the first turn was too close and too sharp. There were runners in distress after the finish and no race medical to be seen. Spectators filled the recovery area, no blankets, and you had to push to get fluids, but hey, it's a great course. On the plus side, let me see, uhm, oh, the music along the course was way better than last year.

Great Marathon (although a few problems)
This was my first marathon. It was great - the city is scenic to run through, the course was almost perfectly flat, and the weather great. I liked the double loop, my family was able to stand at one bridge over the canal and watch me four times by just crossing over.
However, there were a few problems. First, the half marathon started 2.5 hours after the full marathon. I was just past the half way point (4:45 runner) when the half marathoners came flying by. The marathoners were pushed and elbowed out of the way. I actually had to go to the side and stop so I wouldn't be trampled. (plus, forget about the mental job it does running along side the fresh half marathoners at that point)
Second, they had ran out of everything by mile 20. No cups at one stop (they actually handed us the water jugs to take a swig out of and hand back), no gatorade at another. And post-race refreshments???? I think all those rude half marathoners must have gotten them all.

Overall, an excellent marathon experience!
Lots of positive things to say about this race. Plenty of excitement with the other weekend events (in-line skate marathon, 10 K, 1/2 marathon, etc.), plenty of crowd support overall, especially in the last 5 km. The people of Ottawa really get out to support the events! This was the third marathon that I've run, and it was by far the best. Oh, and it was flat, which helps too. The only negative: they were 15 minutes late getting us started (2001). Talk about pre-race nerves! I was worried that the 2-loop course would be mentally difficult, but in fact found that it really helped with pacing.

A great marathon for a first-timer!
My husband and I ran the Ottawa Marathon in 2000. It was the first one for both of us. The event is very well run. The race starts an hour earlier for those who are not able to complete it in five hours. The crowds tended to thin out by the time I finished (4:40), but overall the crowd support was pretty good. I am not sure about the two loop course, yes, it lets you know where you stand in terms of timing, but I found it was a little boring the second go round. It is basically very flat, with only one uphill around 18 and 32k. The variety of food was diminishing by the time I crossed the finish line. Overall, I would recommend it for first timers and people looking for a real week-end event. We brought our children (ages 15 and 10) and my mom and had a great time touring around the City.

Good for the '2 runner with kids' family!
I actually ran in two of the events in 2000: the 10K the night before the marathon and in the one-loop half marathon the following day (the marathon does the loop twice). Both events are well orgainzed and offered 'chip' timing.
Also, a 5K and a kids race are offered (while the 1/2-marathon, marathon is being run). Hence, this is a very good race for a 'two runners with kids' family. Be sure to take in the many sights that Ottawa offers; most are either a walk or short bus ride away from the city center. Americans will find the hotel/food prices to be very reasonable.

My first marathon - and it was great!
I live in Ottawa. It's a beautiful city. The marathon was exceptionally well organized. As people tend to say, it is a good place to do it for the first time.

Good Place for First Timers
The city is easy to get around. Lots of things to see...museums, galleries, etc. Hotels downtown are plentiful and reasonably priced.
Weather is usually nice - cool and dry. The course is flat but scenic for the most part. A lot of it parallels the Rideau Canal through the heart of the city. The course is a double loop, which is nice if you want to see everything again. Organizers have done a good job, but the wheelchair marathon interrupted the running marathon, and could have been started at a different time. Volunteers are terrific! They go all out to keep your spirits up, especially towards the end.

Beautiful city with great running weather
I just ran this yesterday. It was tragic with the death of a fellow runner. For a first timer I highly recommend this race due to its two loop format. It allows the runner to pace oneself and know where he/she stands in terms of going the distance. It is a relatively flat course along the banks of a canal with a few roaring waterfalls. You get the feeling that you are in a city and in the wilderness at the same time.
