Long course

If you want to run a 26.9 mile marathon or a 13.5 mile half with no mile markers or lane control, this race is fit you!

Flat, Beautiful, Well Organized, Great Volunteers.

Everything was great from the organization, to the volunteers, plenty of aid stations, cool medals, and nice shirts. It was very hot and humid and it was not an easy day to run a marathon.

Fun Half/Full Marathon in South Florida

I happened to be in Florida on vacation so I decided to run this half marathon. I had someone pick up my packet so I didn't attend the expo and I used an uber to the start so i didn't use any race transportation. The race itself was nice. I lucked out as it was actually pretty cool for Florida's standards and not much humidity. The race started at 6am which is pretty early but it made it so that we beat what normally would be tough heat/humidity. The course itself was mostly flat. My only issue on the course is that it went through a state park which was completely pitch black for two miles. I mean, you could barely see anything which is tough when you are trying to run fast. The best part of the course honestly came after emerging from the dark park to a beautiful sunrise on the beach. The course itself was well marked and I had it at exactly 13.1 on my watch at the finish. The finish was pretty cool as it was on the beach. The post race party was fantastic, one of my favorites at any race I have been to. They had great food for the race size-hamburgers, enchiladas, fruit, chocolate milk, muffins, cookies, everything you could want to eat and plenty of it. The race medal was great too, a really cool turtle. I also won a nice plaque for my age group and won a giant bottle of olive oil (race sponsor). The only thing I would complain about was a lack of spectators but it is so early, I would imagine no one was going to be on the course cheering us on. Also, the race shirt was kind of boring. I was hoping for some south Florida colors and it was just a boring army green shirt with a turtle on it. A great race, lots of fun, I highly recommend it. Plus I got a half marathon PR in Florida!

Great Winter Race!

This is a fun race for the Runners from the North. The day temps in the 70s. The morning of the race, it was in the 50s-perfect running weather. The expo had size to it, and several booths with food sampling. The buses were all on time to take us to the start. On time start at 6 am. Great police support at every major corner. Bring your cell phone as the sunrise was gorgeous! The finish was next to the beach so a great place to sit after you were finished. Again, lots of free food at the finish, including hamburgers, beer, fruit, muffins, cookies, etc. The medals are awesome-love the turtle, so sweet. Yes, the course is flat as it is a Boston qualifier! Yes, I definitely would recommend this race! Bring your swim suit & swim or tan on the beach:)

Okay race, better half than full

I ran it this year. It was really hot (of course not their fault). There were plenty of water stops with water and sport drink. There was only one spot I found with gel though and for a marathon that was a bit lacking. Every other marathon I've done has had multiple stations with gel. There are so few marathon runners, it is really geared to the half marathon runner. The course is good although with the sun and heat, you are roasting the last few miles.

Hot and Boring

The hot wasn't the race's fault. I don't understand how people like the course so much, though. Yes, the ocean sunrise and the finish along iconic A1A are nice, though by that point this year I was walking and hating life because of the heat. But everything from Hugh Birch to the turnaround is tedious, with no spectators. Race organization was mostly fine, but I give them a major ding for the finish line shuttle. Even though the web page said '13 shuttles running continuously from 4 to 1 pm,' we had to wait almost an hour for our shuttle back to the start line, and it wasn't even close to 1:00 when we got in line for the shuttle. I don't see how that's possible with 13 shuttles running. I thought the shirt was fine (short-sleeve tech), and the jellyfish medal was interesting, and the race was overall okay, but I hold a grudge over any complications with finish line shuttles.

Wonderful race that could grow

I've run the half-marathon a couple times and really enjoyed it. The course is very scenic, starting in downtown Fort Lauderdale before heading toward the beach. It gets a little tight in spots, heading through a park before doing an out-and-back on A1A, but the closing miles on a straightaway down beachfront allow you to finish strong. Could use more portable toilets near starting line. If you're visiting from out of town, it's easier to cab or uber/lyft to expo and starting line, or you can grab the shuttle buses running from beachfront and convention center hotels before start.

95th Marathon! A hot, fun day to run!

I had always wanted to do this race. the medal was beautiful and the booths at race expos in Canada were always staffed by rather attractive ladies. I promised I would do this and since this is the final countdown to my 100th I thought I would add this race. The package pick up is good but I thought paying $25 for a parking pass a bit excessive. The food at the finish line was finished by the time I got there but the medical tent was nice. The course is flat and the view of the ocean was very nice. A good race with beautiful scenery a great medal that I will show my nieces and nephew at Easter!

Beautiful and fun half marathon

I have run this half marathon every year and enjoy showcasing beautiful areas of my home city. The start in downtown with festive lights along the boulevard, the gorgeous view of the sunrise from the bridge approaching the ocean and the remaining miles with ocean, intercoastal and park views provide a perfect venue for resident runners and visitors. The volunteers are terrific as are the police who monitor the course. This is the biggest turnout I have experienced in all the years I have participated. Every year I have complained about the T shirt. Finally, and I thank the race committee the T shirt was great! Thank you for a fun event!

Good race; needs fine tuning

RD needs to update this space, as blurb is from several years ago. Agreed that EXPO is HORRIBLY located. Have a smaller one and hold it in a hotel. Cannot stress this enough. End of course needs work. There are lots of police, a plus, but there's a left turn sometime after mile 18 or 19 that can seem unclearI saw runners ahead paused, trying to ensure they were to turn while the cop sat in his car. The last 2-3 miles are full of slower half marathoners walking 3 and 4 abreast. Sounds trivial until you are using extra steps every 10 feet or so to have to run around them. Band usually is too loud. This last time, awards were a half hour late, and they were up on line on time, so that was a pain.

Easy logisticals and nice, & runner friendy

The course was very nice and easy to navigate save for the fact it's 26.21875 miles. Timing company needs to be spoken to. Clocks were off by a minute or more for around 15 of the mile markers thank goodness I relied on my runner's watch. Mile markers in at least 4 occasions were more than 10 seconds from the painted mile markers including one was at least 45 seconds from the actual mile mark painted on the streetI can also tell because my mile splits were up to 50 seconds different on those occasions. If you can time yourself, navigate through 26.21875 miles and can either gamble on the weather or enter at last minute, this is the race for you! I was very happy overall except the timing and mile markers.

Flat course; I should have been more cautious

Negatives (echoing previous comments): the convention center parking for the expo is a mess. There are many events there plus the cruise people all need to get through security - everyone in vehicle must show identification. Plus you pay to park. Race day parking - if someone is with you and not running, have them drop you off at the start and go find a parking spot in one of the lots near the end. Oh yes, the beer truck - weil if you are a mid-pack finisher in the marathon, you'll find that the cups are out AND by the time you get something else to put beer into, the truck driver will shut down the flow of beer by pulling the taps. Of course, it's Michelob Ultra anyway, so wait to have a real beer later. The timing organization really screwed up some of the mile markers in the latter stages of the race. Sorry for listing all negatives. It's a flat fast course. Being from the North, I was dressed lightly as I knew it would warm up and it did before the end of the marathon. I was shocked at how many people were overdressed. I guess Floridians aren't used to 'the cold'.

Beautiful Marathon Sunrise.

I wanted a race in a warm climate for President's Week, and picked this one because of proximity to the beach. I didn't have particularly high expectations, but had a most wonderful time and excellent experience. The Expo vendors were enthusiastic, the volunteers were fabulous, the post race area was fun, and the course was beautiful with a spectualr sunrise just as we turned to run along the beach. The 6:00 AM start was well organized with convenient shuttles from the finish back to the start (we stayed near the finish). Once the half-marathoners split off the course, it got a little sparse, but that is to be expected in an event of this size. One downside is segments of the course between miles 12-18 are on busy A1A, but there were LOTS of police to control trafic and keep everyone safe. The finish area was right at the beach, and it was wonderful to plop my butt in the sand right after collecting my medal and all the goodies at the finish (including a well-stocked and welcomed beer truck).

Beautiful Course, Great Medal and Finish Line

I loved the course, a great combo of natural and architectural beauty as well as being mostly flat. It should be even nicer next year when the construction on A1A from Mile 23 or so to the end is completed. It was well organized at expo and at the start. The finish was on the beach with live music and a wide variety of real food (coffee, burritos, burgers, etc.) The medal was a bit over the top, but truly the biggest and heaviest I have in my collection. The only negative for me, was the point to point aspect of the course. I did not enjoy waiting over 45 minutes for a 20 minute ride to return to the start area. I would definitely do the race again and I recommend going very early parking at the end and taking a shuttle to the start.

Fast course, terrible expo

OK, bad stuff first. Expo was at the Broward County Convention Center, probably the worst place for packet pick up because it's also at the cruise-ship terminal. Traffic was a nightmare with ship passengers on Saturday. Inside, it was cramped. T-shirt can't be worn in public; it's really that ugly. The good stuff: The crab medal was outrageously cool. Kudos for the designers. Race day organization was great. The number of runners small enough for a mass start, no corrals. Really appreciated the super early start at 6 a.m. because it got hot at the end. Course was flat and fast, but it was lonely for the marathoners after the half-marathon folks split off. Zero spectators for the marathoners, which is fine by me but not for those who need crowd support. Police presence at every intersection was greatly appreciated.

Great course for the half marathon

The best things about this event are the scenic half marathon course, the volunteers, nice medal, and the gorgeous weather! The negatives are terrible ugly T shirt, expo location and parking access, race day event parking chaos in garage with only few ticket machines, and long wait for shuttle bus at end of race. Bring lots of patience to enjoy this beautiful course, friendly volunteers, and fantastic weather!

Love the course.

I've run the half marathon in Ft. Lauuderdale for the last couple of years. Year one (2012) there were definite issues. Specifically, the bag drop happened about 25 minutes before the start of the race which left me slightly nervous. Year two (2013), the big issue I experienced was the buses transporting us at the end of the race back to the starting line. There were countless people in line for the buses who did not run the race and it took 30 minutes of waiting outside to get the bus. Beyond these two critical statements I believe this to be the top marathon's in South Florida. I've run 5 different marathons and this one easily has the best course (truly picturesque). The fans cheering us on have been incredible and the people working the event are truly excited to be there and assist with everything. Wish I was able to do it again this year. Next year I hope to be rejoining everyone.

Flat race, great medal

I ran the full in 2013 after running the half in 2011. This is a nice race run on a pancake flat course. It can be hot even in Feb (altho in 2013 we had ideally cool temps) so be forwarned. The expo moved to the convention center. It gave much more room for the actual expo but getting into the convention parking garage is a traffic nightmare, and you have to pay to park. The start and finish are 3 miles apart. Runners can park at finish and catch the shuttle to the start (I've always done this and it has worked effortleesly) or park by the start and catch a post race shuttle. There were enough pre-race port-a-potties but they ran out of toilet paper an hour before race time. There is no excuse for this to happen. I saw a good samaritan couple who left and bought a four pack from a nearby 7-11 and folks were passing this around. Other than this major mistake I would've given the race 5 stars for organization. The race begins 6:00am. I think this is done to help avoid the heat but it creates a memorable atmosphere for the early miles. We run down Las Olas Blvd a picturesque street and are then greeted by the sun rising over the Atlantic ocean. Early in the race we run about 2.5 mile through a nice state park then head back out to A1A. From miles 6 or so on the entire race is on A1A. Traffic control is excellent. After about mile 7 you lose views of the ocean however and only get the backs of continuous beach front hotels and condos. So after the halfers split off (around mile 9) its lonely with nothing scenic to see. There are plenty of water stops and I noticed gel being handed out also. I carry my own so I'm not sure how often. All the water stops also had a sports drink (poweraid this year). Unfortunately all the stops were all set up differently. Late in a race I feel it really helps when every stop has been set up the same. The final 3 miles or so we get back to ocean views and that really is great for the final push. This race's medal has long been an award winner and this year's continues that tradition. I read JT's criticism of the shirt and I really liked this years after feeling that the shirt in 2011 was awful. It just goes to show that design elements are a matter of personal preference. I had to catch a flight so I can't comment on the post race set-up.

Great event, comradery and scenery

I have run this half marathon every year and it is so much fun. Great scenery, well organized, and fantastic crowd especially along the beach. A huge measure of gratitude this year especially to the many volunteers who braved the 40 degree temperatures and wind chill. The cold temps were unique and made the event even more memorable. The only negative is the T shirt. It was deplorable. The Tshirt does not do justice to the event. Heard many runners say spend less on the medal and create a shirt runners want to wear. Hope the organizers will create a unique shirt that represents the great quality of the A1A Marathon.

Definitely a better race for the half marathoners

I have run this half marathon twice and ran the full this year. The half marathoners have the better part of the course. Once the halfers split off, it was a very long loney run. There were no spectators, but the volunteers were enthusiastic and supportive. Crossing the finish line in under 4 hours was anticlimatic. There was no one left to cheer for me. I feel bad for the 400+ finishers behind me. The race was well organized and the medals were outrageous. The shirts were too big and terrible quality. I would definitely recommend the half, but not the full.

Decent Marathon; Miami is Better

The race itself is fairly well run, lots of cops and traffic cones keep all but the most aggressive drivers off the street. The course itself has some nice bits and some not-so-nice bits- you go through a very pretty park during the first quarter, but by mile 20 you'll be sick of the Condo Canyon that is A1A. Water stations could have been a bit more organized, and the water itself tasted *horrible*. They should think of a better place to hold the expo- the Fort Lauderdale convention center is essentially part of the cruise ship terminal, which makes it a hassle to get to. If you're pondering a winter marathon, I'd suggest Miami instead of this one.

A great marathon experience

This was a great marathon in sunny southern Florida. Everything was organized extremely well! The race was fun, the other runners were very friendly. I enjoyed the course. Water, Gu and Poweraid stations were frequent and the volunteers were great! Music and bands were light for the marathoners between 15 and 22 miles. Couldn't predict Mother Nature though, a warm day!

Good Effort: Can Only Get Better

The course is flat and fast. Beautiful ocean views. The water points are plentiful, which helped on a hot and humid day. The start was a gaggle, and not really monitored which lead to crowding in the beginning by slower runners and walkers. Took a little while to break through zigging and zagging by the slower runners. The half marathon is run at the same time and uses the same finish line. So by the end of the marathon, I had to fight the same issue with slower walkers and runners that still had not finished the half marathon. They were clogging the finish line when I was trying to cross it. They should consider using real actual corrals next year, or separate starting times for both races. Also request those that are walking to stay single file and to the right side of the course. Some of the water stations were poorly managed. I actually got hit by a rake at one station, where they were trying to clean up. Other water stations, were slow, and I had to call out for water. The medal was great! The shirt disappointing with advertising on the back and ugly brown, yellow and orange print on the front that states 'Half Marathon & Marathon.' The organizers should consider having separate shirts: one for the marathon and one for the half marathon. The expo was great!

Great Get Away Marathon

Flying in from Chicago, I knew this was going to be a tough race due to the weather. Sure enough, it was hot and humid! Despite the conditions, I had a great race. Stayed one mile away from the finish line. It was an easy walk to the park and we had no problems catching the shuttle. We even overslept and still made it on time. Had difficulty finding the bag drop, but this was due to us getting their late. I loved the course, especially the the part through the park. Race got lonely once the half'ers split off. Aid stations were staffed lightly. Wasn't a problem for me, but I heard it was a problem for others behind me in the pack. Loved the finish along A1A by the beach. My only complaint was I hit the half marathoners around mile 23. It was hard to navigating around them. The finish area was great! Plenty of food and beer for everyone! I will do this race again.

Well run - they can't control the weather

Most of my previous events have been large (Disney, MCM, ING Miami), so I was interested to see how a smaller event would be. I think they did a great job. The weather was unseasonably hot and humid and the headwind for the last half of the race made for a brutal day. With that said, every water station was well-stocked and well-serviced. There were wet sponges available at some of the later stops. At the finish, they called out the finishers with their name and city which was a nice ending. The large flip-flop medals were a nice touch. Being sponsored by Publix, there were ample refreshments and food available at the end. If you like a fast course, in better conditions, this would be a good one. I gave the course 4 stars for those out of area. I'm from Florida and the view of ocean condos for miles and miles wasn't the most exciting. There isn't a lot of crowd support, but a lot of the half runners stuck around and cheered for those who did the full which was nice. Overall, it was a nicely done event. If I had one recommendation, it would be for some sort of first-aid station along the way that offered vaseline, biofreeze, etc. With all of the humidity, clothes were soaked early (I could hear feet sloshing in sweaty shoes less than 10 miles in), so some people may have benefited from that.

Views, flat and fast!

This was a great race. Water stands were plentiful. The course is pretty much flat the whole way and the volunteers were great. Down side is it can be warm (yesterday was a toasty 73 at the start) and I did not see medical stations along the way. The finish line was congested and a little wild but with lots of goodies. The medal was great!

1st time lots of beautiful views

I unfortunately signed up to run the full marathon and was directed at mile 9 to the right, sending me with the 1/2 marathoners - I finshed the 1/2 and didn't have a chance to run the full - would like a chance to run again and if possible, if put on by the same sponsors - would run on March 4th in Miami to make up for my entry fee - johncoyler@yahoo.com - thanks.

Shuttle buses a disaster

I was a spectator and tried to take the shuttle from the start line to finish. I missed the finish of my friend in the 1/2 marathon. Waited on a shuttle bus for over an hour, even the cops yelled at the bus driver. When we arrived at the finish the time clock was already at 1:45:00. Terrible experience for watchers, leave the family at home.

Solid Half Marathon

This is the second year in a row that I have run the half-marathon. It is a nice break from the dreary winters in the North Pole. Pros: Early start time, fun course, beautiful sunrise as you finish, enthusiastic volunteers, plentiful water stops, good post-race food, free (and cold) post-race beer. Cons: Paying to park at the start, paying to park at the start and paying to park at the start. It is a real turnoff. After shelling out $80 for the half, can't the race folks convince the city to address the parking issue? Is this downtown Manhattan? It just seems like a scam, and free parking at the start would add to the friendliness of this race.

The half was great.

I was a little worried doing a race in South Florida because I was coming in from the Northeast and was not acclimated for the warm weather, but the temps weren't a factor for the half-marathon. Well, not for anyone finishing under two hours, in my opinion. All in all, I really loved this race. It was everything I hoped (flat, fast, scenic, and well-organized). I ran with the 3:30 pacer, who was on the money, until the half split off. My only gripe was with the bag pick-up area. It was not particularly secure and took four people a half-hour to find my bag, which had been misplaced (yikes). Other than that, everything went smoothly. I was pleased with my time because it was one of my faster halfs, even though I haven't been training that hard. Did I mention the course is fast? :-)

good but needs definite improvement

I ran the Ft Lauderdale AIA marathon for the first time this year (have run four before) and generally can say I had a good experience. There were plenty of water stations, friendly volunteers, and the nice addition of cold towels in the last few miles. It was great EXCEPT for the totally illogical decision by the race directors to host a children's race at the last mile of the marathon at approximately 10 a.m.!!! How RIDICULOUS. Runners finishing at around my pace (4-hour finish time) had to bob and weave around hundreds of kids as they dashed toward the same finish line... with NO separate lane for the absolutely fatigued marathoners. I understand there were only 800 marathoners compared to the 3,700 half-marathoners, but the decision by the directors as well as the fact that there were virtually no port-o-lets in the last 18 miles certainly left a bad taste in my mouth. My sisters, who are also runners but did not participate in this particular race, had to run in front of me and clear the way to make sure I didn't get tripped up by any of the children. I don't, of course, blame the children, but rather the directors on such a poor decision on the timing and location of the kid's run.

Great Race

I've always liked this marathon because it's small and well organized, especially if you compare it with the ING Miami. It's flat (with the exception of one drawbridge) and it's a certified course too. The only problem this year was the weather. I am slow and by the time I finished, the temps were at around 80F. A shadeless course that was aggravated by the weather. The water stations were well stocked and had water, the Title drink, and ice. My only recommendation is to change the drink brands because the Title drink is not good. This is the second race where I've tried it and it tastes so bad that it made me nauseated.

A great race if you don't mind running in the heat

The course was really well organized - plenty of water at every mile and lots of mile markers along the way. The course is quite nice (pretty and flat), but there is no shade, and the last half was really hot and sunny. The people were super nice - after the race people were shouting their congratulations to me from their car windows! Due to the heat, I had a lousy finishing time, but despite that it was a great race.

2011 - a few regrets

OK, just to be clear I'm comparing this mainly to Miami as a yardstick, which may not be fair for a smaller race. From what I understand from these comments, 2011 was a big improvement over 2010, but I saw some issues that make me think I will not run A1A next year. Parking - There should have been some police presence/coordination to help with traffic ingress in the morning. There was huge traffic on Broward after 5:00 a.m. I waited for about 45 minutes, stoplight to stoplight. Running out of time, it looked like I wouldn't be able to park downtown by 6:00 so I pulled into the first lot I saw and parked; unfortunately this was a private lot with a tow-away sign. From what I understand, there were dozens of other runners who made the same mistake who were lined up at the tow yard. Granted, parking is up to the individual and I could have left even earlier, but due to the traffic many runners had either to choose to park or not run in the race. Avoiding this should be a prerogative for the organizers and the host city. Sponsors - I do not care for Title sports drink. Mix1 is a good recovery drink. The bananas were way over-ripe. I think I heard there was some jambalaya or something but I don't care for spicy food after a race. Overall I was a little unsatisfied with post-race support. Traffic control - Not great; I saw and heard that there were some near collisions with pedestrians. The volunteers on the course (some of whom look like bike gang members) weren't that attentive. Kids' race - I realize that the kids' race was free and sponsor-supported, but frankly I think we're lucky this wasn't a disaster. No safe place for the kids to rally up before the race so there were 50+ kids standing on the sidewalk with hotel traffic and A1A traffic going by. We had marathon runners and even hand-crank wheelchairs and their bike escorts going by as the kids ran. Next time it should be on a controlled course that goes out-and-back, rather than sharing the race course. Bag check - No security at the bag check. Course - I understand that this was better than last year. Running by the ocean was good, and Birch State park was OK, but of course the "condo alley" stretch was a bit lame and seemed to go on forever. Also would be better as a loop or otherwise provide more shuttle support, I thought I saw the shuttle once but ended up catching a private ride back to the start.

A very well organized race.

I was impressed with the race organization. With packet picket, you get a race program that includes maps of the start and finish areas. The aid stations were plentiful and well run. The course is well marked. There were digital clocks at every mile. In the last mile, there were banners every quarter-mile. Finish area had a wide variety of foods and beverages. The course is flat (except for one bridge in the early miles). Most of the course follows A1A, and there are views of the ocean. It's a hot-weather race, so you have to be prepared for that.

This race gets better every year

Apparently the race organizers listened. The course is improved with water/Gatorade stops every mile. Water stops were well stocked and well manned. There was ice on several of the stops in the full marathon and, as the temperature was well into the 70s, it was greatly appreciated. Volunteers were fantastic! Traffic control was good. The course is flat and fast with only 1 bridge to contend with early in the race. Porta-potties at every water stop. The race remains small and I hope it stays that way. I will definitely run this race again. Thank you, race organizers, for listening and responding!

Beautiful scenery, obnoxious spectators

The good thing about the course is that it is completely flat except for a small hill in the beginning. But, there were so many negatives. There were hardly any spectators out to cheer since we started at 6 a.m. The spectators who did come towards the end barely cheered. Most of them just stood there. The most obnoxious thing was that towards the end at mile 25, there were many shoppers/spectators stopping to get a "free drink" at the water stop that were intended for the runners. There were so many of them that I (and the runners next to me) actually were not able to get a drink. Also, towards the end, it was the kids' Fun Run, so I had to finish the last 1.5 miles dodging herds of kids who were oblivious of where they were going (I finished in around 4:20). Last but not least, people handing out the medals were socializing instead of handing out the medals (after running a full marathon, you barely have energy to reach for the medal - let alone to have to interrupt people for it). Overall, it is a fast course, but with obnoxious spectators and poor planning. I've been to at least 3 other marathons and they stagger the races (start 30 minutes apart) and make sure that spectators are not standing in the running path of those trying to finish.

Great Opportunity to Qualify for Boston

I've participated in each year for which the marathon has been instituted (starting seven years ago). In my experience it is a good marathon to test yourself in preparation for a qualifier.

No fans, no sports drink on route

The first 3 or 4 miles and the last 2 miles of this race are scenic, but the rest of the race is winding between 1970 condos. There were nearly no fans on the route and the only refreshments supplied were water and Active water (which is a low-calorie water). The expo is small, but nice; and that's about it. There were lots of half-marathoners.

Not slow runner-friendly

If you are a slow runner like me (5:45+), this is not a marathon you'd enjoy. Hardly any spectator support, no gels, and no food at the end - just a bottle of water. There's absolutely no interest in slow finishers. I had to ask where to go to get the chip off of my shoes. It felt like they had already closed up the finish area, and nobody was around to direct me to any refreshments (maybe there were none). I almost got lost on the last few miles heading towards the oceanfront; markers/signage were not clear and I followed the cones on the A1A instead of the small parallel road to the left. Very disappointing experience, given that the fees charged were comparable to larger and better organized, friendlier marathons.

A very good event but could be better easily

1. Expo: Easy packet pick up. It wasn't the biggest, but you could buy some last-minute stuff as needed. There were lots of samples, and it was easy to get to. 2. Parking: Close to the starting line but I was a bit impatient for the shuttles back from the finish line, so I took a cab back. Bars were closing as I arrived, so I had to be careful in the garage. 3. Start: Race started right on time. 4. Course: Enjoyed the state park portion (lots of trees). Having runners going in both directions on A1A was not ideal, but I knew that going into it. Plentiful water, but I didn't see any gels out there. :-( I almost ran over a spectator who a volunteer didn't catch jaywalking. It's easy to run the "long way" around the course; watch the tangents. Mile markers were off - one was off by about a quarter-mile (seriously, 15). I couldn't have confidence in the mile markers. The live music on the course was played well, but the selection wasn't exactly "pro-marathoner." Rumor has it that the ocean was right next to the road. Unfortunately, I kind of zone out and don't notice much on the sides of the road during races. 5. Post-race: plenty of room. Wide variety of food and drinks. The medical tent was without any Mylar blankets (yes, I know it is Florida) and the lady who finished shortly after me with the goosebumps could have really used one. 6. Overall: I would (will) do this race again. Once the half marathon peels off at mile 9 or so, you have plenty of elbow room the rest of the way. Weather is hit or miss, but the course is flat and the pace teams seemed to hit their goal times (in case you need a little help). 7. Spectators: There weren't many (this isn't Boston, and who is going to wake up at 6:30 to watch me run?), but the volunteers were enthusiastic and those who were on the course were very supportive.

Great Course - Organization Needs Improvement

Suggestions for improving the expo: move it to another location, add more vendors/products for sale, and make sure you have enough shirts. A crowded mall is not a good location for an expo. I was looking to buy a couple of shirts at the expo and there were hardly any for sale. Running out of shirts is almost inexcusable. Suggestions for improving the start line: provide more portable toilets and scatter them about. There were only a few toilets and they were all bunched together right at the start line. Also, provide more trucks and personnel for gear check. Standing in a long line to check gear at the start just doesn't make sense. Suggestion for improving the race: provide Gatorade, Accelerade, PowerAde or some other well known brand of drink. Active Water is just not a good choice. Suggestions for improving the finish area: enlarge the finish area and move everything farther away from the finish line. Everything seemed to be crammed next to the finish line, causing a traffic jam with everyone trying to pick up their medal, get water, get their chip removed, get food, etc. Suggestion for improving the shuttle buses back to the start line: provide more of them. I waited with approximately 200 other people for 30 minutes to catch a shuttle bus only to have a small bus show up that could hold about 20 people. I wound up walking the 3 miles back to my hotel. Suggestion for improving the course: change the loop through the park to the end of the race instead of the beginning. The path through the park is narrow and the runners are still bunched together early in the race. There was no way to run at any other pace than the one the "pack" was running. If the park is at the end, the runners will be move spread out and it will be easier to maintain one's own pace. Suggestion for travelers: don't stay at the Hampton Inn downtown. That part of Fort Lauderdale is scary. Overall: the race itself was fun and the course was very scenic. The weather was just about perfect.

Great half-marathon - very fun!

After reading harsh comments from years' past here, I felt this run deserved some good press. This really was a fun run and done very well. Parking was not a problem, but I did get there before 5 a.m., like we were told. The race started very smoothly. While there weren't thousands of spectators, there weren't thousands of runners either and the spectators that were on the course were great. There were refreshments at every mile and music every few miles. The run through the park was really a nice break from the ocean run (which was fantastic!). The after party was great. Lots of happy people, lots of food (including Mexican food!) and free beer! The medals were awesome. The only bad thing was the shuttle back to the start line. Took forever! However, all in all, a great experience. Highly recommend for those wanting fun (vs. I guess a challenging course). And the beautiful weather didn't hurt... P.S. There were almost no drivers anywhere on the course as others posted for years past.

A Can't-Miss for Locals

I came down from Palm Beach for the day for this great race. Nice, flat, easy course, and not too many runners (good size). Probably worth traveling to, but as a local, I advise others in the area not to miss this. Major complaints: 1) The start was steps to the west of an active railroad track. We had to wait over 20 minutes for a train to come through, and in South Florida, every moment counts. The last 3 miles of the race were excruciating due to the direct sun coming in from the east, and I was very bitter at the notion that I could've been there 20 minutes earlier if they had moved the race start literally 100 yards to the east. 2) Gels/GU/food... where was it? I didn't see any the entire race. According to other posts, there was some GU at mile 8, which sounds pretty unhelpful. Later in the race is where it is really needed, not to mention things you CAN'T carry on you like bananas. But overall, a positive review for this marathon.

A Great Race!!

I loved the race course. Running along the ocean was beautiful. I'll be back next year. The medals were great. Thanks to all of you who made this a great half-marathon! The temperature at race time was perfect. I trained in snow.

Enjoyed the Florida sunshine!

Overall I thought this marathon was worth the trip for me. I didn't have really high expectations, and it turned out better than I thought it would. The pre-race website registration and info were good, though I found the hotel reservation system a little misleading for a first-time visitor to Florida. That resulted in less than satisfactory lodging at the Days Inn, but close to the starting area. I liked the course along the beach and the beautiful sunrise, after that it got a bit boring along the condos, but the finish back on the beaches was great and pumped me up for a strong finish. The finish line food wasn't the best; I would have liked ice cream or some cold treats. The rock band music and beer made for a fun finish for me. The shuttle back to the start area was easy and comfortable; there was no long wait either. Water stops and volunteers were fantastic! Plenty of porta-pots also. My complaint on the course was the lack of food. Gels were handed out but bananas, oranges, and apples would have been great. I would suggest food on the course next time. I thought the temp and conditions were great, and I liked the early start. Having trained in subzero weather back home, the weather was on the warm side but not a problem for me. The shirt was quite plain, but the medal was very nice. The biggest problem I had was at the starting line parking garage, where there were 2 meters to take required prepayment of parking, and one meter quit working, The lines were very long, not moving, and the cause of a lot of frustration. There was no warning about this. Had I known about this strange payment system, I would have avoided that parking garage. Because all the pre-race time was spent trying to pay the parking, there was no time for the usual pre-race activities. A bit of frustration. Some were quite upset, and were still in line at the start. Overall, it was my 22nd state of my quest for 50, and I would recommend this race.

Enjoyable and fast, but watch the potholes

My second year, and with the cool weather and flat course, my time was 15 minutes better and got me a BQ. The only real negatives were a few potholes and what looked like a 6' pipe hole before we went into the park. If any one stepped in it, it would be bad news. Put a cone on it or something.

Previous comments are too harsh

Why so harsh with the previous comments? There were lots of positive aspects: the medals (wow!); quick and efficient awards ceremony; free beer; great sand sculpture at the end; early start; great volunteers and medical help (one of our group needed medical attention, and he got fantastic care); effective traffic control. Things to work on: convert some of those half-marathon runners to running the full; give gels much later in the race - say 10,14,18 and 22 miles instead of at 8; add smaller sizes for race shirts. And, maybe the organizers should consider changing the half course or start time, as I heard that the front-runners had to fight their way through hordes of half-finishers.

A1A says it all!

Ft. Lauderdale is a beautiful and friendly city in which to run a marathon along the Atlantic Ocean. The race is the right size, with a total of 3,000 runners. Ft. Lauderdale has a great running group called the "Road Warriors." The expo at the mall was small, but nice; and packet pickup was organized and quick. The new bamboo shirts are great. There was lots of parking near the start line. The medals are really nice. There was plenty of food and refreshments afterward, and the entertainment was excellent. The course was nice and shaded until the last six miles, and those are always hard anyway. I paced the 4:00 hour group and had a great time. The bus ride back to the start was so nice, with comfortable, roomy seats and air conditioning. The hardest part was getting back up out of the seats. I will return next year if I am able.

Nice course and weather

I enjoyed this race. The start was at 6 a.m., which gives you about an hour before the sun appears. The early temps at the start were upper 50s/low 60s with a mid-afternoon high in the upper 70s. The finishing stretch along Beachfront Ave. is in direct sunlight and obviously the warmest part of the race... but the light breeze and beautiful scenery made it very enjoyable. It is an "easy" course that had plenty of aid stations and volunteers - big shout out to the VOLUNTEERS! Loved it. Would do it again.

Many Improvements Add Up For Great Race

The course change this year made the race much more enjoyable. The park is now what it was intended to be - a pleasant diversion, not a torturous delay. There were more fans this year, and the move to the Galleria for the expo was a brilliant idea. The smaller space gave it much more energy than it has had before. Top to bottom, everything was greatly improved. It is inevitable that people will complaint that the crowds are too small; however, they don't seem to understand that this is a small, local race. I, personally, hope it stays that way. If you want Chicago- or NYC-size crowds, run those races. This is loads of fun with one of the most beautiful settings you'll ever find. Lots of water/PowerAde, and a GU station. They did miss the winner coming across the line (how did he pass his escort without the escort noticing?), but it is always a learning curve when you put on any event. Good job!

Poorly organized

Having run 75 marathons, I have to rate this marathon at the bottom of my list. The day started by my arriving at the finish area parking lot early as directed to catch the 4:30 shuttle to the start. Well, about 150 people were waiting at 4:30 and there was no bus or event spokesman to explain what was going on. Finally we were told that they could not contact the bus company and had no idea when they would show up. At this point, many of the runners took taxis to the start. Well, I don't carry that kind of money when I race. The buses did show up at about 5:15, which made for a short time for restroom breaks and warm-ups at the start. Then we waited for the start, as we could not hear the announcements; it came about fifteen minutes late. The early portion of the race was enjoyable, with nice scenery and cool weather. Then, as the day wore on, we started to encounter cyclists and an occasional vehicle in the running lane. I am a 5:30 marathoner and signed up for this race as it was advertised as a six-hour course (before we would have to move to the sidewalk). I was well on my way for a sub-six hours when at about 17 miles something went wrong, as my Garmin indicated a long mile. Since there were no course monitors, I have to assume we missed a turn. My total distance came out to 26.53. Then shortly after that, while I was still projected under the six-hour mark, we were told to move to the sidewalks and they started to pick the traffic cones. Here the race started to turn bad as the sidewalks included many residents out for a morning walk in addition to driveways, which made for difficult running. Now with no traffic control, we had to fend for ourselves at many intersections. In addition, many of the water stops were no longer manned, so it was serve-yourself. When we got the beach area in Fort Lauderdale, we had to deal with the beach-goers who were parking and unloading there beach gear on the sidewalk. At this point it was almost impossible to maintain any kind of pace. Arriving at the finish line I was handed a medal and bottle of water and it was finally over. From reading some of the other comments, it was still good that I parked at the finish, as the parking at the start was bad. I actually saw people lined up in the parking garage trying to pay for parking after the race had started. It is too bad that this had to happen, as this course has so much potential. There was nice scenery and many nice residents cheering for us.

Good enough, flat and easy.

This was a pretty good race. I wouldn't travel for it, but since I live locally, I'll most likely run it again. The course is kind of boring... it's an out-and-back, running by lots of condos, and I'm not crazy about the loop through the park. Aside from a single short bridge, it is almost completely flat, so would make for an excellent PR opportunity. The weather cooperated this year, although I felt bad for anyone still running past 9:00, because it was getting pretty hot and the sun was beating down. Plenty of water/Gatorade stations, and gels were passed out around mile 8. Not a lot of crowd support, but enough. The expo was small, but I don't really care about that. Tech shirts were okay. Medals were pretty cool. The Cleveland Clinic medical staff at the end was doing a great job; they were actively out assisting runners who had just finished (including me... I needed some ice for my knee). If you're looking for a great local race, I vastly prefer the ING Miami, which takes place a month before this one. But as I said, this one was good enough to run again.

Enjoyable local race with big-time flavor

Raced the half, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Ocean views for most of the race were breathtaking, just like the sunrise. Nice field of runners - not too many, not too few. The expo was somewhat small, but I can live with it. The tech shirt... what's wrong with you runners? It was nice, soft, and breathable, and somewhat reflected our South Florida tropical climate.

So much potentential... wasted.

Having run this race all the years of its existence, I see so much potential wasted. It can be a great race, but not much history has yet been made to draw out the locals. The field is not stellar, perhaps because of all the local 26.2's leading up to it. The weather has not cooperated - too hot, too wet, too windy, which probably has hurt. Most participants' comments about year after year of bad conditions probably deter others. One perfect weather year could change that. The announcements and organization at the start this year were horrible. Runners milling about on the course at the wheelchair start; there was a pitiful PA system, and you could not hear any announcements or even the national anthem from the corrals. They really ought to change the direction in the park as it is totally uphill (how is that possible?) and maybe a change might lessen the despair and loneliness felt in that loop. The medals have been and continue to be first-rate and unique, but this years shirt.... What were they thinking?! Small expo, but I hope this is a growing event. I don't know how it can hold a whole lot more runners for the first 3 miles; it's kind of crowded. Parking issues have to be addressed also. Definitely need a 10K mat and a mat at the far end of the park to ward off potential course cutters. Some entertainment along the 6-20 mile stretch would help, because there are no spectators. It might sound like I didn't have a good time, but I did; I love the ocean stretch, the run down Las Olas, and my medal. Better course control on A1A for the marathoners is vital. I had groups of morning bikers barreling at me and lines of walkers coming at me who expected me to veer out of their way. Trust me, I had no veering in me at mile 25 and darn it all, they had beers and half medals and tried to be encouraging. But... I will be there for 2009. It's Fort Lauderdale, after all!!!!

Flat Coastal Run Designed for Half

The course is pretty enough in that it runs along the Florida coast for the better part of the run. Unfortunately, it also runs past endless cross streets and driveways with too few people to prevent cross traffic. Cyclists (other than the support crew) were on the course riding both with and against the runners. There were few spectators. I was only offered a bottle of water at the end, which was too little because it was hot and I was drained. I went to a local mini mart to buy some cola. Still, it was a good place to run. It was the flattest course - training or otherwise - that I have ever run.

Grit it out

This is a great race to grit it out. There is not much in the way of scenery... just a lot of tall condos on either side of you most of the time. No hills; few people on the sidelines. I really liked it because you could focus on the race. It was hot this year. As the 4th overall finisher in the full marathon, the last four miles weren't great - dodging clusters of walking half-marathoners. In fact, course control on A1A the last two miles was ATROCIOUS! Everybody and their mother was out on the course, walking, biking, roller-blading, motorcycling. This MUST be addressed next year. The finish line itself was chaotic, again clogged with slow 1/2 marathoners. Couldn't we segregate these people on a separate finish line? It would make everybody happier. Just have two chutes across the same line, even. The sand sculpture was well done. Even with the flaws, I enjoyed doing a race where I had few distractions, but I probably won't be back.

Nice destination race, pretty course, but warm!

Lovely course, WONDERFUL volunteers, and nice (but warm) weather. I was impressed with the experience, accuracy and good humor of our pace group leader, David P. I was warned about the park at mile 22, so I felt prepared and it went fine. Runners should not expect great spectator support, but the volunteers more than make up for it.

Park was boring - and no music! Ugly shirt.

What a boring, unorganized race! The course was out of control, people were on the course that were not even in the race. No respect for the runners; cars, trucks, bikers, stroller and just anyone who wanted to be on the course could be. Almost got hit three times - once by a biker and twice by cars. Where is the crowd control? I have never seen this in an organized race!!!! Get a real expo; there were tons of empty spaces, and leftover, old merchandise that should have been at the flea market. No promotional giveaways - an empty goody bag with the world's tackiest shirt. I used it to clean my car yesterday. They have the nerve to call it a tech shirt. I want a refund. Skip this one. The medal was okay, but the line for the photo was impossible - I gave up. Tiny bottles of water at the end.... How cheap can you get?

UGLY SHIRT! Nice Course.

This is my third year running the half marathon. I have to say that there have been some good improvements over the first year. Bus back to starting line parking area is an A+. Traffic control was not great this year with the bikers coming head on at us in the course with the police just standing by it was an obstacle course. One car pulled out and just drove right through the runners; he finally got stopped in his SUV (white) by the police. The gray Lexus towards the finish line was another offender; shame on the residents of the area. Worst were the pro bikers; they probably do tri's and they should know better. I wish I knew what group they were with so I could run head on into them next time I see them out in a competition... just kidding. I said, "Unbelievable" to one woman and she rode back to harass me. Other than rudeness - and the race directors, I guess, cannot be blamed for that - I have to say that the tee shirt has won worst-looking in graphics and material of any marathon I have been in. This is three years running and the shirt gets cheaper and uglier each year. My teens call it a "FUGLY T-shirt." Next year please get some one with taste and talent to design it. Other than that the race was great!!!!!

Pass on this one

The Bad: 1) boring course - most the scenery is condos, condos, condos and the jaunt in the park mile 22-24 is a miserable sauna 2) course open to anyone: there were cars, trucks, random runner and cyclists, and even large dogs that lurched towards the runners on the course. This was *inexcusable* especially considering that this race cost as much as a large city race with 4 times the number of runners. 3) expo was filled with a lot of vacant spots 4) MELTING temperatures The Good: 1) Friendly volunteers 2) Friendly pacers 3) Nice to finish right at the beach

Could be improved

This is a small race (500+ marathoners) and it is super smart to have the race start early at 6 a.m. because it is nice to see the sunrise and try to beat the heat as much as possible. The strengths would be: nice expo for a small race - nothing to munch on, nice shirt, easy course map to understand and for friends/family to get around, and a good post-race menu supplied by CPK and others. Plus it was nice to be able to run outdoors in February. Had digital mile markers every mile with plenty of water/Gatorade and the stations were appropriately staffed. Things to improve: no 3:10 or 3:20 pacer (website has misinformation) and we were only told about this at the expo. Very few crowds as the race was like an afterthought on the main A1A strip until the final mile as people just casually walked by... no signage or advertising around city about this marathon. Almost no music on the course. Super-long line for the massage tent (only 3 massage tables) and half-marathoners dominated the line. And then the unforseen: just tough conditions as, despite it being a very flat course, there was a lot of wind and a lot of heat. I'm neutral on the race, as it was well done in many respects, but I don't feel like I have to make it a part of my future running schedules.

Lots of Fun Again

I ran the half this year as opposed to the full last year. It was still a lot of fun and a beautiful run. The one comment I heard from a lot of runners this year was that the park at the end has got to go. I didn't hear one positive comment from all the people I spoke with. The other problem was the finish line was a bit crowded for the number of people that decided to stay and have fun. All and all, though, I think the rest of the race was great. It is turning into a great event for locals and the out-of-towners who want to get away from the cold. I just hope they keep their cap at 6,000. I know they haven't reached it, but I think that is plenty of runners for this event.

Still learning...

Good half marathon destination race. Ft. Lauderdale is a great place for northerners to get out of the cold for awhile. Gorgeous up and down the shore. Think 'Palm Beach south'. Organizers are still learning on the full marathon side. Course was completely flat. No hills at all. Spectator interest was very minimal. Race organizers should create cheer zones for the 2nd half of the marathon. Post-race massage tent was closed early. No food on the 2nd half of the course; only Gus at the 13 mile turnaround and water/Gatorade stops at each mile. Very warm this year; not sure if there was enough volunteer presence on parts of the course to respond if a runner had a medical issue. Organizers will work out the kinks. Nice expo (well organized); great finisher's medal. Should get better with time.

Fun Race

I'm training for Rome and I'm a local here so I decided to do the full marathon as a training run. There are two great things about this race: 1. Running along the ocean, and 2. The most frequent and best water stops I have seen to date. #1 is self-explanatory... this race has a pretty nice view most of the way, even though you loop around and run along the same course most of the way back. I can't say enough about the water stops. It was hot and sunny once day broke, so they were very needed, but there was water and Gatorade at or near every single mile post, and I can't thank the volunteers enough for always being so friendly and ready with cups for every runner. That part of the race was a huge success. My main criticism of the race is that on the last 1.5 miles - the "home stretch" - the race course was full of motorcycles, bikers, skateboards, pedestrians, and - yes - even Segways, who wanted to enjoy their Sunday on the beach, took advantage of the road being closed to cars, and didn't care one bit about the race going on. I suppose the best solution would be to either start the race earlier or use better barriers along that stretch of the course. But being a native here, I know that many people would probably go wherever they wanted anyway, barrier or not. On at least three other occasions during the main stretch of the course between Oakland Park and Atlantic, police motorcycles were using the empty lane right next to the runners and blazed by at 40-50 mph, which was pretty uncomfortable, and I'm not the kind of person that gets uncomfortable easily. Perhaps they can be asked to use a more appropriate speed when riding alongside the runners unless there is an emergency. Otherwise, the police were great and helpful in keeping traffic off the course. The spectator support was OK... there were a few small groups on every mile clapping and smiling. There were 3 or 4 spectators who took it to the next level and were screaming all-out both times I passed, which was fun. The best was a small group of people who set up a beer stand on the street.... There was practically no entertainment other than a saxophone player and a reggae-guy with a steel drum, but I actually liked the quiet course. The expo was good, the medal is nice, I really don't like the shirt (gray with tiny writing... for Ft. Lauderdale, you'd think it would be a bit more lively and interesting), and there was adequate food and drink at the finish, with massages, medical support, a good announcer, and a nice crowd. I'm glad I ran this race, and I prefer it over the Palm BeachMmarathon... this race is getting the fundamentals down well, and if it develops a unique personality (there is plenty of it in Ft. Lauderdale) it could be a great marathon.

Great first run

This was my very first run and I have to say it was a delight - the weather was beautiful, the course was nice and the runners were respectful of everybody's space. See you next year!!!!

Would have been great except for parking chaos

Parking was a disaster. We inched our way to the parking garages, taking more than 15 minutes to go one short block. I waited 45 minutes in almost stand-still traffic and fearing that I would miss the start, parked at a Burger King with about 30 others. When we got back all of our cars had been towed about 10 blocks away. We needed $100 cash (who carries that kind of money to a race?) to get our cars out. I had to hitch a ride to the only bank that is open on a Sunday and sit for 1 and a half hours for the bank to open. A most imperfect end to what could have been a perfect day. I will NOT be doing this race again (and it is less than half an hour from my home). Miami was 10 times better organized (parking) with 3 to 4 times the number of participants.

2008 Race

I cannot wait to run the A1A Marathon again! I ran the half in 2006 and the full in 2007. After my experience last year, I tell everyone that will listen that this has the potential to be a GREAT race. For such a young event, the organizers do an excellent job and the course is fantastic. I love running along the ocean and through the park. The finisher's medal is the best I've seen! This is one to run!

Great course

I loved the park at mile 22 - 25. What a perfect place to experience the solitude and reflect on why I run.

The race was well organized and fun.

I participated in the A1A half marathon in 2006 and 2007 and enjoyed both of them. The park run was both peaceful and enjoyable to me. There were plenty of water stops and snacks during the entire race. My only negative comment is that spectators were lacking. I felt sorry for racers running the full marathon with few people cheering them on during the final stretch. Hopefully, more people will come out for future races, even if it is raining.

Very flat, scenic course; good for PB

I ran the 1/2 marathon and have run numerous others, as well as full marathons. In comparison, this run was excellent for size and scenery - especially running along the A1A with the ocean on one side as the sun was coming up. This is a great course for anyone who is looking for a PB. If you can't get a personal best here, you should re-evaluate your training. The organization of this run was good. I was disappointed with the lack of spectators. My only suggestion would be to add mile markers for each mile. I would definitely run this course again.

Very nice winter marathon

I enjoyed the 2007 A1A Marathon, despite the weather conditions of the day. The course was well marked, and refreshments were abundant throughout the duration. Vehicular traffic didn't pose a problem, due to the efforts of the police. The refreshments at the finish line were adequate and the beer tasted great. Would do it again some day.

I loved the complete event

This was my first marathon. I ran the full and thought it was great. Billy Bones doing the national athem on the sax was fantastic! What a way to fire up the crowd. There were plenty of bathrooms, water stops, and enery gels. The music bands and radio stations along the way were so refreshing. The shuttle buses back to the starting line were great - and only a 15-minute wait. I thought the run through the park was nice. It gave you a chance to reflect. Thanks, Fort Lauderdale, for the nice experience.

Huge improvement from last year!!!!!

Wow! I have to say the race directors really listened. I enjoyed the new starting line, going through Las Olas, and then going to the beach. Great water stations there were plenty. As usual, the Fort Lauderdale Road Runners entertained like no other. The only thing really missing was music in the half marathon. Not sure if it was because of the rain and wind, but the Road Runners had great music. There was another band playing Annie Lennox songs, but that was about it. Having no music in the park was disappointing because that is the most boring part of the race. The cookie people were not there this year; they were a big hit last year, but I guess not necessary, just a perk. Plenty of water and food at the finish, full bottles of water, towels, bananas, cookies - yum - and bagels, I must say, no one should complain. I came in after 3:00 hours more of a walk/run and there was still plenty of food. Gorgeous medal - just gorgeous, and much nicer than most. The buses were right there waiting; we boarded and were on our way in no time. Nice buses - very plush - and great drivers. It was so cold and rainy and they had the heat on - what a treat. I give this race a 10. Maybe next year more music? Fans are still sparse but it was cold and rainy and that cannot be controlled. Thank you, AIA race directors; you deserve a great round of applause. I would highly recommend this race. I wrote the scathing e-mail last year about all that was wrong with the race and now in fairness I want everyone to know what was right. Nice shirt too!!!! Maybe more goodies in the goodie bag and a bigger expo. I am sure next year will be even better. You are giving Disney and Miami a run for participants. I would definitely do this race again next year. I think everyone should try this race. I was totally impressed.

Great Local Race

Had a great time at the A1A. (Only did the 1/2 - still bouncing back from the full at the ING Miami). A bit strange starting a race in a drinking district as the bars and clubs clear out from Sat. night - mix of people was interesting - but first 7 miles were super fast. Things go false-flat uphill a bit from there (very, very slight) but I don't get why people don't like the park... I got quite motivated to put in a solid piece of work while in there. The sunrise over the ocean was great and a well organized race all in all.... Gear check had me worried, but it took all of 2 minutes to find my bag and don my warm-up jumper... just in time to beat the first drops of rain. Love the race as a local, but if I was coming to South Florida to race as part of a holiday, the ING is the way to go - that race also has a seaside course AND has spectators who care (and thousands more runners). I like the A1A and will recommend to all!

Flat course, flat fans, and almost flattened by ca

I ran the marathon, and I felt like after the half-marathon participants disappeared after the turn-around, so did all the spectators. Cold, soaked, alone, first-time marathoner that I am, I did not appreciate having to hobble out of the way while CARS ON THE COURSE almost ran me down!!! I suck at marathoning, but I did pay and thought I deserved to run the course and not be forced to the sidewalk because I'm not a track star. I'll do it again but I'd like someone to tell the police that there is a marathon that day so that my sorry hobbling butt doesn't have to dodge cars.

Small Race That Delivers What It Promises

First, congrats to ESM for putting on a great race. I also commend them for making a committment to keep the race small. We don't all enjoy running with 12,000 of our closest friends. Living in the area, I can't imagine the logistical nightmare of organzing a race that traverses several small municipalities. It worked well and traffic was not a problem. The water stations were plentiful and the volunteers enthusiastic. Spectators were sparse, but they are at most sporting events in South Florida. However, the ones who did turn out were enthusiastic. The only complaint that I share with the posts here, as well as with friends who also ran, is the park at the end. It would be better if it were at the beginning, particularly since most of us are local runners. We know South Beach Park is straight up A1A. When we had to turn off into the park, with about 5 miles to go, it was a complete decline. Birch State Park is beautiful, and I know the organizers need the mileage. Our hope is that they can rethink its placement in the race. Overall, a great job.

I was Leery, but now I'm Happy!!!

After reading comments about 2006, I was leery about entering. Fits perfectly into my schedule. Weather was awful for FL, but ideal for a race! Course was good - challenging enough because of weather (if you finished under 3:45). Volunteers were AWESOME!!! Billy Bones on the sax is, in a word, inspirational! Awesome transition from finish line to start line parking (did I mention that it was COLD?!). I will definitely go for the SFLA Triple Crown next year (depending of course on my IM schedule). I can't say enough about how impressed I was this year after reading what I did last year. Great job!!!

Decent Race

Overall it was a good race. This is my third 1/2 marathon. I also have two marathons under my belt. This race should be a half marathon and 10K. Doesn't seem like there is much interest in the full marathon since many people are coming off the Miami Marathon a few weeks earlier. The roads should be completely closed; I don't like sucking gas fumes while running a race. The park at the end of the race was a killer. That is where most people want to see something nice, but instead it's an empty park for two miles....

Plenty of Water Stops

Though this was my first half-marathon, I have attended dozens with my partner. The numerous water spots were greatly appreciated, and the volunteers should be applauded! The 2 miles through Birch State Park were a little demoralizing due to its desolation - since I was about to die at that point - but, overall, it was a delightful experience! The cold weather and rain were a bummer, but it all contributes to the experience! Thanks for making my first half-marathon memorable! -Patty O'

Loved it

To be honest, I was a little unsure I should sign up after all the bad comments I had heard. I did not run it last year, but I can speak for this year. I only ran the half and: 1) It was well organized. 2) It had plenty of bathrooms, water, and medals. 3) It had a great atmosphere - volunteers and a good number of spectators. 4) I personally loved the course itself. I plan on running this again next year. You definitely did a great job.

Great job, organizers

Last year I ran the A1A half, and this year decided two weeks before the race to sign up for the full. I was a bit surprised that there were only 500 full marathon runners, but in the end, I actually enjoyed that. For only the second year in existance, the organizers did a great job and made some obvious improvements from last year. Most notably, there were an adequate number of water stations. I had a great time and ran a personal best. The temperature at the start of the race was ideal, and remained that way throughout the race. It did rain with gusty winds for about 30 minutes, but even that wasn't THAT bad. Organizers keep listening to runners comments and making improvements, and I believe the participants will continue to grow. Running in Ft. Lauderdale along the A1A makes for an excellent course. I look forward to running in future A1A's.

Spectator Comment

What gives? No Broward Co. busses running in the morning. No water taxis. The So. Beach parking lot had more than 100 spots open, but without a pass you were not allowed in (those spots never filled up) and the police closed the streets to the suggested parking lot at Beach Place. So, I wound up forking over $25 to a rip-off hotel to park. If this race is going to come back next year, race organizers need to do like other events in So. FL and work with transportation planners to make this a friendly event.

Newer marathon with potential

Overall race organization and course was fine (ran the half). But what was with DHL? It took me 20 minutes to find my sweat bag - at the time it was pouring rain (and it was still in a truck). The bags out on the ground were in disarray and no one seemed to be in charge. Also, it did not seem like Fort Lauderdale knew a race was going on. Nothing on the local news. No public transportation for spectators. Parking for spectators was a problem (handbook said to park at Beach Place but the access road was closed to get there). This race is only a couple of years old. Hopefully race organizers will listen to comments. This marathon has a lot of potential. I enjoyed the sunrise over the water.

Not bad, not great, but worthwhile!

First time running the A1A, my second half marathon ever. I did ING Miami a few weeks prior and thought it went off without a hitch, even with the pouring rain. Packet pickup was easier with A1A. I thought it was well executed. Expo wasn't as busy as I expected; nothing like ING Miami. Start line worked out fine. Gear check was easy. They used minute markers for starting. All well that way. Course is beautiful. I run it every weekend so I felt right at home. It's flat and fast! Good chance for a PR. Not as many spectators or as much cheering as ING, nor was the finish line well-staffed or exciting. The only major screw up was the way they delivered gear at the end - they just set up rows semi-sorted. When I arrived (1:40) they were just getting started. If you're local, I recommend it. If you're planning on a trip to South Florida for it, I'd say do the ING instead.

My first, their first, no fans

This was my first marathon and my 3rd race ever (two 5Ks), so I don't have any reference for comparison. I originally registered for the half, but due to the hurricane postponement, I had enough time to train for full. After many unanswered emails and voicemails, I could never reach a human being to upgrade my registration for full, so I ended up paying a 2nd registration for full. Miles 22-24 were in a local park where I had to dodge park-goers with dogs! Miles 24-26 were in the heart of Ft. Lauderdale bBeach, where I was running along opposing bicyles and in-line skaters. The beach goers were oblivious to the event, and there was not a significant cheer (except from volunteers and neighbors) even though I came in among the top 50. I guess the usual beach gang was disturbed by the nuisance of a whatchama-race going on. However, I will run the 2nd A1A (half) in 10 days. Everyone deserves a 2nd chance.

Good inaugural

I am 69 years of age and race walked the half marathon. I drove down from Delray Beach and after driving around for awhile was able to figure out how to get to the expo. Perhaps next year the organizers might find a more accessible location. I thought the expo needs beefing up with more merchandisers, etc.... On race-day there need to be more portable facilities, as the older we get, the more often we need to stop. I am still awaiting my medal and have almost written it off. I wanted to show it to my kids this month when we see them. I have run the NYC Marathon 26 times and would suggest that one of the organizers attend the expo and speak with those folks for ideas. Getting back to the starting line was a headache and hope the organizers come up with a better scheme. Fighting my fellow runners for a seat on a small shuttle creates tension and that certainly can be avoided next year.

Where's My Medal?????

Good first attempt... I guess! Great course, even though I run it almost every Saturday morning, it was great and I felt like I was at home. Ran 10 minutes faster than at Miami 3 weeks before - flat and fast it is. BIG Disappointments: Not only did they run out of medals, they ran out of water also.... Water stations I passed on the way out must have moved somewhere else, 'cause I sure missed them on the way back in. I received a bottle of water at the finish line, finished it in like 2 minutes (because I must have missed every station on the way in), asked for another and was refused... because they didn't have enough for the incoming runners. Beer? What beer? Bad enough you run out of medals and water, but they ran out of beer also.... What a shame, forget about Boston, you needed to run a 2:40 half or full to qualify for the suds. I was in line forever to find out that they ran out when I got to the front (should have taken the free beer from the HASCHERS on A1A). I actually did. Thanks guys. I agree with a lot of the negative comments, and disagree with all the responses defending the promoters.... YES this was their first A1A Marathon, but NO it was not there first marathon (they have done this before and should know better). I worked packet pick-up as a volunteer at the expo and I knew there were over 2,000 runners, so they knew too. Will I run this again? I'll see when I receive my medal... if I ever receive it.

Medals still missing one month later

Well it will be one month in less than a week since the AIA marathon. No response from the race organizers. No medals received as far as I know. My group did not get theirs. Several e-mails to the organizers as to the status of the medals go unanswered. They are already boasting about the registration for the 2007 race. Try completing the responsibilities from 2006. In their website they only print positive comments. They do not address the fact that it is going on a month and I do not know if they are mining gold for the medals or what. I would say this is a marathon to skip. It continues to leave a bad taste in everyone's month. Also we are suspicious of the actual course. It appears that a lot of people did their best time in this race. The course seemed to be rather short as far as the half.marathon... maybe there should be some investigation into this matter since it was supposed to be a qualifier.

Just Say No to the AIA Marathon

Total and utter disappointment. The only highlights were the Road Runner Club, their volunteers, some great music, and lots of photographs. Negatives: 1. Very poor expo, no organization, one cashier to buy any items, line was too long so I gave up. Not many vendors or exhibits. What happened to all those named sponsors they never even had a booth? Poor goodie bags, mine was practically empty. No giveways or very few (some small towels); t-shirt was poor quality, cut wrong, flappy sleeves, does not breathe and mine was full of snags and two small holes. Not even a good cleaning rag. 2. Not enough bathrooms at the start, so lines were long. Not enough bathrooms at the end. What party???? Missed that one. 3. Lack of food at the end. Came in after 2:25, not one Pria or PowerBar to be found. Whole oranges, nothing cut up, bottled water was not given out but a nice lady gave me a towel. Warm water with volunteers fingers in the cups and into the water - yuck, wear gloves. 4. No medals? Give me a break; they knew all along, they just wanted to make money on registrations. I am going to print t-shirts (good quality) that say "I ran the AIA Marathon and all I got was a crummy t-shirt." 4. No mat in the park; anyone could cheat, and they did for sure. 5. No shuttles, or just one or two; we walked all the way back to the finish line. 6. Wrote to the race director about all the problems, but never got a response. Their website only prints favorable comments. 7. Police allowed spectactors, bikers, roller bladers, and baby strollers in the middle of the course. They could have radioed ahead to remove them, but told us that they had as much right to be there as we had - unbelievable, I almost got hit twice by a biker who yelled profanities at me!!! 8. Cars were allowed to cross west to east into the hotel and side streets, so we had to watch not to get hit by a car. Officers needed to be briefed on what goes on in a marathon, as many were clueless. 9. My results were not even printed in the Miami Herald or Broward papers, yet it is on the official website, so who knows how the results were reported. The total disorganization of this race, makes it a 1 on a scale of 10. 10. Lack of music throughout the course, and it was boring in the park - except they had a wonderful band that should have played on both sides of the park. Thank you to the band and its members. "Who Let the Dogs Out" - good song. But this race was a total dog.

A great time at the inaugural A1A!!

I visited my brother who lives in Ft. Lauderdale and ran the inaugural A1A Marathon. Beautiful course! I trained in Illinois in the cold but enjoyed the warm FL temperatures while I was there. In response to some of the comments, the race directors have no control over the weather!!! I didn't have any problems with water stops - one going into the park at mile 22 and the same one coming out of the park at 24, then one at 25 or so. Very plentiful all along the course, too. We don't get ice in our water and sports drinks here in Illinois during races, so I certainly didn't expect it in FL! I met a very nice man who was running his first marathon, and I ran and chatted with him for 16 or 17 miles. Most runners were very friendly. I also want to thank the marathoner who danced with me at the very last water stop when I asked him to dance to a slow song!! Loved the sand sculpture at the end. I didn't realize until later that some didn't get their finisher's medals, and I feel sorry for those who didn't. Lots of free parking at the start line and easy for even an out-of-stater to find. Criticisms: It would have been more fun to have the post-race party right on the beach rather than a commercial spot like Beach Place. It would have seemed more special. Shame on the massage therapists for not showing up! A1A Limo quit giving rides too soon. Those of us who are slower runners also needed rides back to the starting line. One of the race directors offered to take 4 of us in his personal vehicle. Above and beyond the call of duty! All in all, I had a ball and would recommend this marathon to anyone. If my travel plans allow, I would do it again.

Very Good - with Potential to be Great

I've been a runner for several years now. I would consider myself a serious racer, but am not a Boston qualifier. I have completed 2 marathons and several half-marathons. This year, I ran the A1A half. COURSE: The course was fantastic. If you like a scenic course, this ranks competitively with anything else out there. I thought the start corrals with the mile pace posted worked very well. Most average/mid-pack runners were adhering to the 'honor system' and leaving room near the start for the really fast runners. I recall grass skirt-wearing volunteers handing out gel between miles 3 and 4. This was the first distance event I have ever seen where the gels were given this early, and that was a nice plus. Music on the course is a matter of personal taste, but I myself did like the rock band performing at the entrance to the nature park. BEHIND the SCENES: The expo was small but well-run. I personally did not hear the guest speakers. The volunteers were very good. I have read negative reports of too few chips and medals. I had no such problems, and I personally liked the souvenier shirt. While I did not use the service, I think the beach/VIP parking is probably a good idea whose time is coming. In 2 or 3 years the marathon will be bigger. More people means more parking problems. I did notice the warning signs on the road the day before, telling people to expect road closures and delays; the more you get that message out - the better it will be race day. FANS: There weren't many, and if you need a lot of fan support like they have at Disney or Chicago, this marathon may not be for you. What fans there were seemed friendly and enthusiastic. A first-year running event in South Florida is not going to get a great turnout, and that is a reality. I would predict that in future years they'll try to promote this to the community more. Frankly, I think it is a very hard sell. IMPROVEMENT for NEXT YEAR: If I could improve only one thing in this marathon, I would revisit the first water stop. They seemed a little overwhelmed. I am not sure what the solution is. It might be as easy as adding an extra table or two, or maybe adding a stop closer to the start. For better or for worse, these events do attract a fair number of first-timers who may not know much about hydration. BOTTOM-LINE: I personally thought they did a good job, and would strongly consider running it again. If you are considering a winter marathon or half-marathon, you want a sunny climate, and you're willing to trade the fan/crowd support of a big-city marathon for less congestion on the track and fewer hassles, and a shot at a PR, this might be the race for you.

Good Debut

Amazing the comments on this marathon in such a short-time. I am especially surprised at such runners that already state, "Would not run it again." Do you remember the first time you ran your first marathon? How many mistakes or oversights did you commit? How much more organized are you now than in your first attempt? I am willing to wager than if your first marathon effort as a walker/runner was judged by peers/friends/family, everyone would say, "Heck, don't support so-and-so, he/she was a complete mess and did a poor job.... My recommendation is for so-and-so is to NEVER attempt another marathon again." A1A was solid for a first-time marathon. Not great, but good. My key issues were 1) crown on road, 2) was not notified at the finish at the award's ceremony was a mile away, 3) returning to starting line for parked vehicles and traffic was ridiculous. However, the best part about the course was 1) Birch State Park, 2) the scenery of the ocean, 3) the ocean immediately at the finish line so you could soak/ice bath after the finish in the cool Atlantic. Bottom line is that I would definitely run this race again if it fits in my schedule. It's tough to run because you have Palm Beach in Nov., Disney and Miami in Jan., and now Ft. Lauderdale in Feb., so it takes a backseat as far as weather is concerned. However, I expect this race to grow quite a bit and become a great race. Great job, A1A and keep your heads up.

Good race

I ran the half marathon and had a great time. I live in Florida so I am used to running in the heat and I didn't find the heat a problem at all. From my experience I had no problems with water stations, toilets, shuttles, packet pick-up. As for the medals, big deal if you don't get one the minute the race ends. You are still going to get one, just later than expected. I think most people here are focusing on the wrong thing. Focus on the race itself and how the experience was... not whether you received a COMPLEMENTARY medal at the finish. I stayed at a hotel near the finish and didn't have to worry about a shuttle back to the start, but the shuttles to the start line in the morning ran fine. No line, just got on the shuttle and went. Overall, I had a great time. I love running near the beach. I will be back for sure. As for those who are upset... it was an inaugural marathon. It will be better next year. No doubt in my mind.

Good inaugural event but medal shortage an issue

There were many good things about this inaugural marathon and I did enjoy my overall experience. It's a shame that the shortage of medals and some other avoidable issues detracted from the overall success of the race. If the race organizers take the comments and suggestions of runners seriously, these problems are correctable and the race can become an outstanding event next year. First, good things: The course itself was very good, with good ocean views, neighborhoods and Birch Park. I thought that there were plenty of water/PowerAde tables and portable toilets along the course. Before the race, I was concerned that there may be a lack of these amenities after the half-marathon turn-around point, but this was not the case. The volunteers at the expo, along the course and at the finish line were very supportive and helpful. With respect to spectators, there weren't many but those that were along the course were supportive and had very positive attitudes. I also thought that the expo, the start area, the start of the race and the finish area (including amenities) were well set up and organized. Unfortunately, there were some problems with the way the race was organized. The single biggest issue for me, and apparently for other runners based on the other comments that have been posted, was the shortage of medals. There was no justifiable reason for this. There were about 1,700 half-marathon and 330 marathon finishers for a total of about 2,030 finishers. The race organizers initially had been planning on 4,000 runners. Also, the Sun-Sentinel reported on February 9 that with 10 days left until the inaugural A1A Marathon, race entries surpassed the 2,000 mark. According to race organizers, there are 2,230 runners and walkers entered - 1,690 in the half-marathon and 540 in the marathon for the Feb. 19 event. With that much advance notice, in particular for the marathon that according to the article had 540 registered runners as of February 9, but only had 330 finishers, there was no excuse for not having enough medals. The explanation on the A1A Marathon website that there was a shortage because a lot of runners signed up on Saturday just doesn't gel with the cited pre-registration numbers. Other problems I saw or read about that didn't significantly affect me were a) the paucity of water stations between mile 22 and the finish, b) the inadequate transportation from the finish line back to the start area, c) the distance from the finish to the awards ceremony, and d) that some runners short circuited the course apparently by not going through Birch Park. All of these problems are easily correctable to make a truly great race next year. First of all, I would suggest that finishers medals are sent ASAP to all of the half-marathon and marathon finishers that didn't get one. And by the way, because it's funny how one screw-up can lead to another, I'd recommend that they be real careful to send half-marathon medals to the half-marathon finishers and marathon medals to the marathon finishers. Secondly, I'd recommend that the race organizers carefully read all of the comments that have been made and seriously consider the suggestions to correct these problems. For example, a chip reading mat could be put at mile 23 in Birch Park to make sure that every finisher in fact went through the park.

I felt like a million bucks after the run!

My morning started off with a bang - I never thought I would make it up that high overpass, but I did. Just watching the other runners gave me the confidence I needed to complete the race! Although I walked most of it, I was still able to finish around 3 hours. Congratulations to the organizers, despite that fact that some have said that there was not sufficient water stations, they did a great job! Show me a perfect event and I will show you one made in heaven! I am looking forward to your Grand Bahama event and I hope you will call on some of the local runners to give you a hand. Perhaps you can also present us with our medals since we did not get them while we were in Ft. Lauderdale last week. I had a ball!

I may make this an annual event!!

While it was not perfect, these guys did an awesome job for a first marathon. The start was fabulous. There were hotel bathrooms, porto-potties, lots of places to park and lots of room to stretch out. The problems came toward the end. Yes, the sun made it hot, and there was no shade during the last 13 miles, but the big problem was that there was no water from mile 24 to mile 26. That meant the last water station was at mile 23, and there was finally a water stop at mile 25.8, just before the end. Also, I walked a mile and half to my car since there were no advertised bus shuttles to be found. I did get a medal but I can understand those people being upset who didn't. Overall, this was my 16th marathon, and I ran a PR time. I was down visiting my parents, so this was great preparation - a marathon before the family. I loved the run along the ocean. There was a lot of encouragement along the course. Birch Park was great (though no shade). Overall, the plusses clearly outweigh any minuses, and any problems they had are easily solvable to make this an even better event.

Perfect - with one exception

This was a great marathon. The organizers, volunteers, traffic patrol and few spectators are all to be congratulated! The event was well planned, the course (AMAZING, but NO SHADE), the water tables and PowerAde were plentiful (but the volunteers were clueless if it was PowerAde or Gatorade). The port-a-potties were well spaced and there was plenty of food at the finish line. Usually a marathon will feature a specific flavor of PowerAde/Gatorade, but they actually had different flavors along the course. It actually helped me to pass the time: hmmmm... what color will be at the next station? The course description was exactly correct. Only one hill, the causeway very early in the race. I was a bit disappointed when I entered the park at mile 22 however, because I was expecting a tree-lined park to have shade - IT DID NOT (it was probably 10:30 a.m. when I entered that area - I'm slow). My only criticism is very fixable but difficult to understand. As mentioned in other comments, they ran out of medals! I think the organizers were also struggling with it since I heard several different versions of what happened. "Either we didn't order enough, or a box was sitting in someone's car." Regardless, it is a major disappointment. After I am out there for 5:15 I truly look forward to finishing and getting the medal draped around my neck, and then... the finish photo. (They did have a medal for us slowpokes to borrow for the photo!). I believe I've taken the disappointment in a mature manner, but it just doesn't feel "real" without that medal. I've already sent in my yellow order form so I'll be standing by my mailbox daily waiting to receive it. This was a great experience. I would recommend it and consider running it again. It will only improve with time.

Many inaugural glitches, nice course

Nice course but many glitches for a first-time marathon, Drove all the way to Ft. Lauderdale (90 miles) on Saturday only to find that we could pick up the number and chip at the starting line on race morning. No medium and small T-shirts were available. Start line was 2 miles from the finish, hated having to walk back to my car 2 miles away, no shuttle bus. Really, really disappointed not to get my medal at the finish; do not take registrations over medal amount. Some water stops ran out of cups, and the finish line ran out of bottled water. Loved the water stop from the Stork Cafe with cookies - great idea!!!! Won't do this marathon again, too many disappointments, especially the medal issue.

Very disappointed about the medals

I coach a group of runners and walkers in Miami. I was VERY upset that some of my runners who were running their first marathon at the A1A crossed the finish line only to find out they had run out of medals. There were only around 300 full marathon runners. If the race was open to 4,000 people how could you run out of medals? Our half marathon runners and walkers who finished after 2:15 or so didn't get a medal either. You would think with a three-month delay they'd have time to anticipate and order the exact number of medals they needed. I would think it'd be better to have ordered too many medals than to risk losing registrants for 2007 because of this race's apparent lack of organization. We loved the course, but they need to do a better job for next year in planning the number of medals to pre-order.

What a mess!!!!

This marathon was a complete mess, the lowlights follow: Registration was very confusing, packets were not prepared, and they ran out of the chips. At registration I registered my personal Champion Chip, but they didn't enter it correctly! They gave the chip that was assigned to me to a person who ran the half marathon. When I tried to correct the mistake, they changed the name on the chip, moved it to the full marathon, but kept the original time. Hence, I am currently the 3rd place overall in the marathon with a time of 3:28! RIGHT! I wish! That 3:28 belongs to whoever ran with that chip in the half marathon, not the full. The course was open to rollerbladers, bikers, strollers, walkers, runners, joggers, basically anyone who wandered into the course. Several cars also crossed the cones, and in fact one runner was hit by a car. (A triathlete was hit by a car in an event organized by the same company a few years back.) The course had nutritional suppliments in the form of GU at mile 13 and cookies at mile 20, and that was it! Way too few for a full marathon. The medical tents had no Biofreeze and no painkillers. I was among the several people who did not get a medal on finishing because they ran out, although I am not so sure that is a bad thing, as those who did get the medals saw that the date on them is Nov. 12, 2005, not Feb 19, 2006 - when the race was actually run. I have contacted the company regarding the mistake in the time and have yet to receive a response! I would NOT recommend this race to anyone; run Miami or Tampa, as they are far better organized.

Excellent Inaugural Event

Great race. Organization was top-notch. The course was beautiful and there were a decent number of spectators. Only one hill and that was the bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway about a 1/2-mile into the race. The rest was pancake-flat. The beer at mile 20 was great. You need the carbs - right? My complaints are minor. Courtesy corraling does not work. Lots of slow people thought they needed to be at the front of the pack and the corral was wider than the start line, which added to the initial congestion. The water station at mile 24 in the park only had one volunteer, so it was basically stop and help yourself. It was unfortunate that there were not enough medals for all the finishers but I have to take up for the race director, Steven Tebon. If you go to the results page of the A1A website you can read his explanation that basically says the decision was made to allow late registration on the day before the race. The alternative would have been to turn away runners. I think he made the right call. The refreshments at the end were fine. The weather was hot but that is uncontrollable and the week before the race it was in the upper 30's. I'll be back next year.

Not enough water, medals or ice

Great course, great volunteers and great potential - but not this time. The organizers ran out of both half and full marathon medals. I was served warm water more than once as the aid stations did not seem to have enough ice, and when asking for a second water bottle in the finish area, I got a cup of warm water since they were saving the bottles as they were running out. When I complained to a race director I was told that he was sure I did not have water on my training runs either. That is correct; however, I do not pay for my training runs. They need to make sure that enough supplies are there and that the race directors are more friendly to runners. What's up?

Fast, and Flat course

Organizers in south Florida need to supply ice and sponges to marathon runners. This is a common problem in all the south Florida marathons I have run including Palm Beach and Miami. In the heat, runners like to put ice in their hats and even suck on the ice. Sponges soaked in ice water would have been awesome. Also, it would be nice to have had just one flavor of Gatorade. I don't know whether I got Gatorade or PowerAde, but it should be uniform throughout the course. Great organization. Great attendance for a first-run event. The awards ceremony was too far for us to walk at the finish.

Quick course but not organized

Going into it, I knew this would be a quick course because of the elevation (or lack thereof), the limited number of entrants, and the weather. The course was great and scenic, with the exception of the stillness for 2 miles while in the public park near the end of the course. However, and it's been said before, how can a race run out of medals? It didn't apply to me, but a friend that was in my group did not finish the half before they ran out and got to carry around a yellow slip of paper after the race. She was a first-timer, and I can't imagine how she was feeling after completing such a great achievement. Also, the "shuttle" to take runners back to the start line from the finish line was pathetic. There were only two 12-passenger vans that came around every 15 minutes. I actually saw runners hailing cabs to go back. I ended up sitting in the luggage area of one of the vans with 4 other runners. Great way to end a race. That aside, great course, and it being local for me, one I really couldn't miss.

Good job on a first marathon.

With the exception of not having timing chips for everyone at packet pick-up (no problem to pick them up at start line that morning), the organization was GREAT. Water stops were well-placed, and having lots of porta-potties on the course was a plus. Course was flat - except for the bridge at the start - and scenic. It got a little warm near the end, but the buildings did a good job providing shade for the first half of the run. Finish line was well run with plenty of food, drink, support and a great photo-op with a cool sand sculpture. This one will grow in popularity fast; I definitely recommend this race.

Don't do it!

Positives: I agree with a previous poster - the volunteers were great, and the course is beautiful. If you're not from FL, you should be aware that it is possible (as it was on 2/19) for the temps to hit the upper 70's or low 80's and there is no shade for a large part of the full marathon course. If you're doing the half, it isn't a big deal, but it could end up being a lot of time in the heat and sun for the full. Negatives: 1. No gels on marathon course. 2. No medals for many half and full marathon finishers - they ran out of both. 3. Management had an attitude when my friend tried to work out a pre-race problem at the expo. From the look of her, clearly the woman was NOT a runner! 4. NO shirt for another friend who was unable to pick up her packet until race morning. (Did they order enough of anything?) 5. Two miles between start and finish lines - options: walk back, pay $30 for VIP parking at the finish and take their transportation to the start prior to the race, or stand in the sun waiting for the bus. 6. It not only gets hot in the second half of the course, but it gets lonely as well, with only about 350 running the full marathon. Maybe the organizers should just call it the A1A HALF Marathon and order more medals next year. It would result in a much better event overall. (Hard to believe they ordered fewer than 350 finishers medals for an inaugural marathon.) 7. My gut feeling: this is an event put on by promoters for their own financial or promotional gains, not for the greater good of the running community. I recommend finding a smaller race put on by a Road Runners Club, like the wonderful Ft. Lauderdale RRC volunteers who worked a water station!

Good and fun - fast!

A few more runners would be nice for the full marathon. It gets a little confusing during the last couple of miles with all the spectators and people on the course, but overall I had a great day and ran my second best time.

Great Course

I did the full marathon and had a great time! The weather got a little bit warm for my taste, but overall a good experience. The Good: The volunteers were great and enthusiastic, the traffic control was excellent. They had plenty of PowerAde/water at every station, gels at the 1/2-way point and cookies at mile 22. Plenty of porta-potties. Not much for fan support, but the ones who were there we very energetic and encouraging. I was even given a bottled water by one of them. The starting line parking was free, easy and abundant. The expo was fair. The Not-So-Good: The T-shirt logo is beautiful, but the t-shirt is 100% polyester, and not of very good quality. The logo is an iron-on and the back has all the sponsors' logos; good for a 5K, but not for a marathon. The t-shirts ran small and the bottom and sleeves flare out, not nice. The preferred parking spots were sold for $40!! they were right at the finish line, but I don't think that charging such a large amount was right. Finish-line shuttles. I'm sure they tried their best, but there was a lot of traffic and the runners had to wait a long time in the hot sun for the shuttles to arrive. The course lends itself to people cheating and cutting the course. I saw people going from mile 21 to 25 without doing the detour into Birch Park. I saw one of them after the race and he was wearing a medal. :[ I don't know if the plan on keeping this race in Feb. but the day was a bit warm for my taste. General comments: I think that overall this was a greatly organized race. I know they had problems with the medals, but they are trying their best to correct that. I am sure they will fix all the glitches and next year this will be an even better event.

Race Start and Finish

The race start was great but the finish was too far from the race start. In addition, the award ceremony was also too far from the finish line, especially after running a 26-mile or a 1/2-marathon event, not to mention the heat at about 12 p.m. Once we got to the award ceremony, there was a delay to get the awards, and the apparent free beer was not ready until the marathon awards were finally given. We obviously left before that, but many runners had the same complaints. We finally walked back hungry and thirsty to the finish line to try to get in a van that only held 12 people at a time. Fortunately we hitchhiked back to South Port Shopping Center where our car was parked. Many runners were expressing the same complaints.

great race, but disappointed that medals ran out

Have entered many races, and found this INAUGURAL event poorly organized, as medals ran out early. The course was unrivaled; it was a great day and I know next year's event will be better planned.

A must-do race! Beautiful view, flat & fast.

A very well-run race for an inaugural. Seminars at expo were very informative. Packet pick-up was a little congested, but not too bad. Course was flat and fast, but could have used spectators other than at start and finish. One water stop was a beer stop! Needed to have more than just PowerAde and water at all stops. Could use gels or fresh fruit periodically for the 1/2 marathon course. The view was simply amazing and easy to get lost in the view of the ocean and cruise liners docked... in the middle of the course it ran through a birch-lined park - gorgeous and a very nice change of scenery. Finish line was organized and well run - nice selection and supply of PowerBars, Pria Bars, fresh fruit, bagels and water. Runners get a chance to have their picture taken in front of a huge sand sculpture replicating the finisher's medal - NICE touch! Race started on time, positive and fun, especially considering the fact that the original date of the marathon had to be moved due to Hurricane Wilma. I'd do this race again in a heartbeat and recommend it to everyone I know that runs! They need more trash cans at start of race, and more potty stops on the course - plenty at start of the race and the finish, but not in the middle. Thanks guys!!

Volunteers were awesome, course was great.

The course was great and the volunteers were awesome. There was plenty of water/PowerAde/porta-potties. BUT I'm not sure if I would recommend this race to anyone for several reason: 1) They ran out of chips at the expo. You had to go to the info booth on RACE morning to get your chip. How is that possible??? If you have a race open to 4,000 people, how do you only have 2,000 chips?? 2) They ran out of small-size shirts. It's not fair to those that registered in September for this race to get to the expo and not get the right-size shirt! Plus the quality of the shirt was terrible. My shirt had some weird black specks on the back, which I didn't notice until I got home. The seams of the shirt look like they're about to open and the fit of the shirt is horrible... the armpits and sleeves are huge. 3) This is the BIGGIE: They ran out of medals at the finish! If you ran slower than 2:13 for the half, you were out of luck for a medal. They gave you an order form to send away for your medal! Again, even though they had a LOT of late registrants, if the race was open to 4,000, then they should've had 4,000 medals. There were a lot of extremely upset runners and walkers crossing the finish line to find out there weren't any medals. I'm not sure if I will suggest this race to anyone for 2007!

I loved it! Even though I didn't get a medal!

The course was beautiful. You can't beat Ft. Lauderdale! Billy Bones was awesome! The other entertainers were great too. The Road Runners Club water station lifted my spirits. The tech t-shirts are nice. The volunteers did a good job. The BSO's and the Ft. Lauderdale Police were everywhere taking care of the traffic - they did a great job. But I was bummed at the finish line. After 26.2 miles imagine not getting a medal but a yellow slip of paper that read: "Due to a surprising number of last-minute registrations, we have temporarily run out..." Now I realize that this marathon had to be postponed because of the hurricane, but today there were 329 people in the full marathon and 1730 in the half, so just how many medals did they have? It's always better to have too many medals than not enough. I feel bad for the first-timers that didn't get a medal. Anyway, in spite of that, I am happy I did this one!

beautiful day, love the course, good support

A problem that I encountered was at the VIP parking lot. The buses to the start were not adequate; a school bus would probably be the way to go. Also, I heard the people who finished at the end of the 1/2 did not get medals, because they ran out. NOT GOOD AT ALL! Otherwise, all went very well... AWESOME inaugural race. I will be back.

Spectacular weather

This marathon was originally scheduled for last fall but was cancelled due to Hurricane Wilma. February is the really the best time of year to run in South Florida and the weather for the Inaugural A1A Marathon was perfect - mild ocean breeze, clear sky, mid-60s. For this first marathon the spectators were sparse compared with other marathons I've seen, but the ones that were there were enthusiastic. To be fair, there are a lot of other activities in South Florida this weekend and the marathon started at 6:30 a.m. Starting later would have gotten more people but it would have been too hot to run. There was one group of spectators passing out cups of beer to the runners - I passed. Overall it was very enjoyable - I'm ready to do it again next year.
