Fantastic race for a slow 50-stater

Course is double out-and-back, very flat and a little monotonous...but it was perfect for me. The out-and-back meant I didn't feel lonely! Organization was fantastic, and had a very friendly feel to it. Police and cyclists patrolled the course, particularly toward then end. Lots of gatorade and GU's. Stayed a couple extra days in Eureka Springs, which I highly recommend. My overall ranking doesn't look that high, but overall, I would give it 4.5 stars in the aspects that matter to me.

Great small-town race

Excellent organization and communication from the race team going into race weekend. Packet pickup was a breeze & race morning was made better by the ability to hang out inside the local school to stay warm before heading to the starting line. I was surprised that the first mile has a big, extended downhill, but thankfully racers don't have to go back up it, so the race is indeed flat as advertised after that. Given the size of the race, the later miles get a bit lonely - but the view was pretty once the fog burned off. Yesterday's weather was pretty much perfect for a marathon - starting temps in the mid-30s and rising to the mid-50s a few hours later. I was wary of the last two miles on the small crushed gravel trail, but it wasn't bad! I slowed down a bit, but I had also run out of people to chase and was admittedly tired, so I won't blame it on the footing. This was a great race to check off the state of Arkansas. If you are flying in, I'd recommend NOT flying into Harrison though - it's a very small airport and made for a unique hassle at my layover in Memphis. Locals here have said people typically fly into Fayetteville and drive two hours instead. Additionally, my mom and I stayed in an AirBnB for the weekend - it was PERFECT. Less than 5 minutes from the race start and race finish (the race doesn't finish where it starts). I even had time after the race to head back to the house and change into dry clothes before heading to the local school to pick up my award. Mountain Home would also be a nice place to stay if you want to stay somewhere a little more populated.

Preferred the old course.

I found the new course less to my liking because the last two miles are the most difficult. It's no longer paved and the incline to the trail is quite steep and lengthy. Moreover, the trail is strewn with leaves, so you really can't see the surface that you're running on. I walked about 1.5 miles of the trail the day before the race and removed some large rocks out of the way. It just seems less safe for an old guy on the last two miles. I'm on the fence about running it again, but overall after 11 marathons here, it has been a great experience!

Thank you, Cotter!

Anyone who complains about any aspect of this race should think twice. The organizer (safely) held a live marathon during Covid when most of the rest of the country could not or would not do so. I was VERY impressed with their organization and by the fact that they kept reassuring runners that the race would go on (helpful when traveling from out of state). Runners run. Volunteers were great, the race was great. Cotter itself was great (shout out to the Trout Lodge!). I traveled from Maryland for this, my 20th state. I would run it again if I didn't have 30 more states to check off the list. Again, kudos to the good people of Cotter. If you're a runner go to Cotter, if you're not a runner go to Cotter, because I hear the fishing is great, too. Thank you Cotter!

Nice course and runners

Happy to get to run this during the covid era. Great day (not too warm), pretty course along the river, nice runners and volunteers. A little chaotic at the start: was to be waves to allow spacing but the spacing was not maintained and it involved crossing the road at which time the waves all started to congeal together. A little slow with buses at end to return to parking at start but was an easy (and actually welcome) walk of less than a mile back. All in all worth doing and really wouldn't have above complaints if no covid.

Crammed Shuttle Vans During Virus

I did this one because it was a non-virtual run in a state I haven't visited, and also because the proceeds go to an impoverished village in Kenya. It was a fairly well-run small-town race with good and bad. Crowd support non-existent but for the volunteers, fantastic as usual. (Thank You!) Full marathon a fairly boring double out-and-back along a river road, but mainly flat. Pre-race rigatoni dish at local motel was ho-hum, but abundant portions. Lousy Top-40 music blasting at starting line. Post-race medal huge, maybe too huge. (Why are medals constantly getting larger? Is it a competition between marathons? Bigger not always better.) Post-race food (pizza and hot soup) was delicious, especially the chicken enchilada soup. Since this was the pandemic year, the biggest takeaways were virus-related. The organizers spelled out many precautions on their website, including cancelling a traditional group pasta feast, having volunteers wear latex gloves (most obeyed), asking runners to don masks except for the actual run, taking temps before the race, and using a corral start. But all the precautions in the world don't matter if you cram people into a shuttle van, most of the windows closed, with no social distancing, or let them mingle shoulder-to-shoulder pre-race in the school cafeteria. Humans are pack animals and there are always fools who will disregard necessary precautions, so there needs to be better control. Why not place tape on the cafeteria floor to encourage 6-foot distancing? Why not use a larger bus and keep people limited to one person per seat? I brought up the crammed van to the tournament director and his response was 'You don't have to get in the van.' So I'm supposed to walk three miles to my car? The assistant director did come over later to clarify an uncomfortable conversation, so I'm grateful to her. My wife and pregnant daughter were upset at me for running this race. So when I see people packed together in a cafeteria pre-race, and packed in a small van post-race, it kind of justifies their anger. Fortunately, no symptoms so far.

This is a scenic course!

I must defend the honor of the White River Valley! It is late November, so of course there will be some barren trees, but as the 2016 video shows, there is still some fall color. Unless you have to have Mt. Denali staring you in the face at every twist and turn, this is a scenic course. To each their own, but I think most runners would love to own a vacation home alongside this course. The majority of the spectators might be the runners themselves, but along with the volunteers and public spectators, everyone is very encouraging. Given the way I look at the end of a marathon, fewer photos may be a blessing. lol

not a race for the slower runners

This race was well-organized, and all the volunteers I encountered were lovely people. But it sure was a boring course. Flat, which was nice, but the scenery consisted of bare trees and farmhouses. And there were virtually no spectators out on the course. This would be a good race for someone who is fast and wants to BQ. But for slower folks like me, I would not recommend it. The finish area was pretty much shut down by the time I finished, and there are zero professional photos of any back-of-the-packers. Kind of disappointing.

Well Organized, Fast, Small Town Race for a CAUSE

Cotter is not super close to any major hub if you live far way. But it is well worth the effort to travel to this race. This small town race is extremely well organized, much of the town/area is involved, and the race proceeds help support a village in Kenya. If that's not enough, they also organize a shoe drive to help those who are less fortunate. I came to Cotter to bag Arkansas as a 50 Stater. What I got was a lesson in COMMUNITY. As a marathoner, you belong to a tribe. The volunteers and organizers of the race also belong to a tribe, and it is focused on helping people. From the people handing out bibs, to the folks at the aid stations, to the nice people serving piping hot homemade stew at the end of the race ... every single person was kind, displayed gratitude to the participants, and was proud to be involved in the cause. It was really heartwarming in every way. The race is a nice easy run. The first mile is downhill, and the rest is pancake flat. As others have observed, it's an out and back twice, but it really FEELS fast. There are not many places for spectators, so it's a good race for podcasts... I gave the race higher marks for spectators, though, because the volunteers and residents are SO incredibly supportive. So bottom line: Come to Cotter and enjoy some good people and a good race ... and help do some good for others to boot!!

A very good small race

The first mile is a strong down hill and then dead flat after that. Nice asphalt road with very little crown and no holes or rough spots. A lot of well stocked and well organized aid stations. No spectators really except the cheering aid stations. There IS parking for spectators at the finish off of the course. Very little traffic on course, but pay attention for cars with runners going both ways. No shoulder. No road crossings after the first mile. It was windy, but the race is in a narrow valley that had no wind at all. The road winds and you end up going all directions. Quite a few good motels and restaurants in Mountain Home 9 miles away. The shuttle system from finish back to the start parking lot worked OK for me. Nice medal and hoodie. Good scenery. The runners talk to each other unlike some races. Ran the half which had about half of all runners. Full is the half twice.

Very flat, small race

As others have said, this is a small race in a small town, in other words, my kind of race. This was state #39 for me. The first mile is down hill then a double out and back on very flat asphalt road. It is not closed, but there wasn't much traffic. Packet pick up was at THE school in Cotter and was easy and quick. Warning: the restaurants in town close early, so plan ahead for your pre-race dinner. We stayed at the Cotter Trout Lodge, don't let the outside fool you, the rooms were nice.

Easiest 26.2

When I say 'easiest', I am talking about every aspect of the event. It's well organized, the expo was small but had all I needed. Even free gloves for the cold morning. The course was a no brainer. I was worried about the two out and backs, but it is so beautiful that it was a nonissue. I enjoyed being able to see the other runners, that was all I needed as far as spectators. I thoroughly enjoyed this 26.2

Cool race in every respect

We benefited from cool temps32 or so at start. (It was 79 two days prior). Race starts with fairly steep decline for first mile then gentle downhill slope for next 6, come back on same road with slight uphill grade and then repeat. I avoid up and back on training runs, but the scenery was quite nice so it didn't become boring. I enjoyed seeing runners the whole way (and avoided getting lapped by the winner). Open road, but difficult for spectators to park. Nevertheless, my wife saw me and delivered Gatoraid throughout. Very well organized and well stocked.

great event

If you like a large event with a bunch of sponsors and spectators, this race is not for you. If you like a beautiful fast course and to run with a whole bunch of other people who like to run this is the perfect race. With the out and back the runners cheered each other on. I liked going to the race without any pre-race nerves and acting like it was a long run. The finishers medals, shirts, awards, and REAL food at the end were great. The race's staging area was near Cotter School. You could keep warm before and after the race, and the food at the end included homemade soups, pizza, and chicken wings.

Great course, awesome charity, really a fun time!

This was my first time at this event, and I was highly impressed with everything from start to finish. It is a smaller event (I think they limit it at 750), but that gives it a really cool vibe. The race is a fundraiser for an awesome charity in Kenya, and you could tell that the promoters we're really passionate about there charity. Great course, great food at the end, really cool event!

Great organizers/poor aid station hydration!

First marathon (63yrs old). Used the standard 16 wk training program. Didn't miss a day or mile of training. Been running for 35 yrs just for health/recreation. This course layout was very level/scenic. Carried my own Cliff bars/gels, depended on aid stations for hydration (bad idea). Power ade was diluted so far, it was useless. Could not even taste it. Made the turn at 20 miles & no one at station, only water in cooler, no cups. Had to gather water in hands to try to drink. Was running on empty last 15 miles due to poor hydration. Had carried/stashed Gatorade Endurance G drinks during longer runs at the course during training practice,on race day I should have used support person for hydration (but shouldn't have had to).Always maintained 10 min pace up to & including longest run of 20 miles before race without running out of gas. Even 20 miler was pretty easy & ran 10 min pace. This was a pace I set for myself to finish & not have to walk (did accomplish those goals). With the amount of money they took in, it is unacceptable to not provide proper race hydration-shame on them cutting back on power ade to save money at our expense! Ended up with 11:08 pace due to crashing last half of race. For all I went thru, running at 5am when hot, 7am when cooled off, thru all kinds of wx including morning of thunderstorms & then them not being there for us with critical hydration-terrible!

Nice small race with some room for improvement

Pros 1. Good organization and communication from the race director 2. Ample close parking 3. Latest in chip technology results delivered quickly 4. Nice long sleeve technical shirt with acacia tree emblem and zero sponsor tags (very nice) 5. I heard the post-race food was good 6. Hotels in Mt. Home cater to runners (early breakfast/late checkout) Cons 1. Open course to traffic, by 3:30 clock time, there were only a few runners still on the field so they are strung out along the course and cars with frustrated/impatient drivers were taking risks in dodging runners and passing other cars. I saw at least 2 examples of unsafe vehicle use near runners 2. Medal doesnt state which race was completed 5K, half, full (that is unacceptable for all parties) This is a nice moderately-organized race with a fast course. The previous reviews show a 4.5 star rating and I personally feel that this isnt a fair representation of the event. The course, in particular, is hardly noteworthy other than it was flat (and seemed protected from the elements not on an open ridge, etc). There is very little creativity required from the planners when running out and backs and I personally avoid them during training runs. I ran this with family, some of who were running the half and it was perfect for seeing them multiple times as we all had different paces. If you want fans, this is not your race. I personally could care less so I rated 3 stars, but for others it would be a 1 or 2. It is an open course and there was a fair amount of traffic. It seems that one side of the road could be for the race with cones or perhaps run facing traffic. I dont know if there has been an accident but in the age of texting and driving, I want to see the vehicles coming at me not coming up behind me. The entry fee was lower than some races but it seems like there should be enough money for a small police presence other than just at the beginning of the race. This even supports Kenya? The website states that the race has raised thousands of dollars for the village of Katito. I think it would be nice to know the amount raised. I couldn't find that anywhere. Thanks to the Director and the wonderful volunteers we really appreciate you being there.

Great small race

This is great small race. I love small ones and this is good. Not much crowd support but you just visit with the person next to you and life is good. The out and backs help with seeing people all along the way. When they say flat they mean it.

Great small marathon.

This was a great small marathon. The staff and volunteers were very friendly. Having the pre and post race in a warm school was very nice. I liked the double out & back because I knew what to expect the second time around and the other runners were very encouraging to each other. I did not have to wait for the shuttle back to the start either. The post race food was great (soup, pizza, and tacos). The course is very flat, I set a PR and got my BQ. As far as things I would change: A timing mat at the start, and one of the stops ran out of Gu. Other than that, a great race!

Hidden gem!

A speedy downhill first mile will get you off to a good start, and the rest of the course is easy on the eyes and legs. Awesome volunteers and organization. Don't fear the out-and-back. It's not boring. It's all good. What are you waiting for?

A diamond in the rough small race

This was the smallest marathon I have ever run but one of the best. It doesn't have the bells and whistles of the big town races but I didn't miss them. A group of us drove almost 5 hours to the race and it was well worth it. I was nervous about the out-back-out-back for the full but it was so neat to see my other friends when we would make the turns. It did get lonely on the last 6 miles but the volunteers were great! They were the encouragement I needed to get to the finish line. The post race food was great (soup, pizza, bbq, rolls, etc..) and having it all at the warm school was nice. The post-race massage was awesome! Medals were pretty cool too. The best part was I set a PR AND I BQ'd!! Just a few things I would change: Timing mat at the start, if no mat then a wave start for 5k or half marathon, Gatorade at the finish line and some fruit to hold you over until you get to the school. Thanks for the hospitality :)

Favorite Marathon Yet

What a great trip!!! I've done a few big city marathons. I love the crowds, the signs, the cheering of a big marathon. White River has very little of that, but if you want your marathon to be about the run itself, you can't pick a better marathon. The route is flat and fast. Passing the other runners during the out-n-back route, there are sincere words of encouragement. I truly loved the camaraderie between the runners more at this race than any other. Between the few spectators, water stop people recognizing you after your first pass by, and the encouragement from the other runners, this was also my favorite spectator experience yet. The scenery is beautiful. I'm sure I'm partly biased due to the cool temps, no rain, and first BQ, but I really can't picture anything I wish had been different about this race!!!

A great catch!

What a great weekend! I cross the marathon finish line, walk literally next door to the cabin where we were staying, take a shower and before you know it, I'm out on White River hauling in rainbow trout after rainbow trout. If the fishing part isn't your thing, do this race anyway. Friendly people, nice flat course and an incredible spread afterward. Also a very cool medal, though I wish both it and the T-shirt had said where this race took place. And another minor disappointment: For the first time ever, I actually won my age group (it helps to get older, not to mention running in an age group where there aren't many people). Alas, by the time they got to us old folks, they were all out of the plaques. Also, be aware that although it's chip timing there's no mat at the start. If you're on the cusp of Boston, line up near the front. My official time was almost three minutes off my watch time. Not a big deal because it wasn't a BQ or a PR, and the rest of the experience was so much fun that it made up for that.

First time there - LOVED IT!

Drove in from Oklahoma on Friday. Wanted a change of scenery from White Rock and we got it! Small, flat, fast. Perfect. As stated in other comments, the weather couldn't have been better-33-39 degrees for the half. Used to 20,000 + people and loved the smaller non crowded road. It was nice to see the horses and homes along the foggy river. I thought it was pretty. I had a great PR because of the temp! Our group of 5 will be back next year and will bring more of our running group. The homemade soups and food was wonderful, as well as the massages after the run. Thanks for the Gu along the route. It's the extra little items that make this race better. Wouldn't mind packet pick up earlier, but I know that takes volunteers. Overall, this race gets an 'A' for a well ran race. Great medals also. Thank you Cotter!

BRAVO

Get there early, parking is a breeze. No spectators (awesome not a single cow bell), great group of runners. First 3/4 mile is steep downhill, remainder of the course is pancake flat. Course is open to vehicles as advertised, had no issues with vehicles. Only 600 runners so that was nice. Shuttle back to the start was fantastic, more than enough vans to handle it. BTW I ran the Half

Very good, flat, small-ish marathon

This was my kind of marathon. Small enough that there were no problems with things like bathrooms and parking, but not so small that you feel alone on the course. The course starts with a big downhill, but the organizers laid our the course so you don't have to go back up that hill. The weather was niceabout 30 degrees with heavy fog at the start and I'm guessing in the high 40s at the finish. I wouldn't call this a scenic race, but it was in a nice area nonetheless. I gave the spectators 4 stars because I prefer a quite course to one with cow bells and screaming. If you're like me, you'll like the quiet of this run. But if you feed off crowds, you won't find them here. A couple suggestions to the race director: Turn the music down at the finish line. It was so ear-splittingly loud it was impossible to stick around and wait for my wife to finish. I had to walk over to the RV park and watch from there so my ears wouldn't start bleeding. At the very least, move the speakers to the north side of the finish line so they face out onto the course instead of the finish area. Start the packet pickup earlier. Having to wait until 5PM to get our packets was a hassle, and by 5PM before a marathon we prefer to be finishing dinner, preparing our gear, and winding down so we can sleep early. At the latest, packet pickup should start at 3PM.

As advertised!

It took some effort to make it to Cotter on a Saturday, but it turned out to be worth the trip. No PR, but my best time in three years. Once you're in town, everything is easy to get to. Great organization and friendly folks. A truck driver did run me and another runner off the road there is no shoulder but I wouldn't hesitate to run it again, although I definitely hope it stays small. It might be nice if marathon runners had a separate start. It would also be more convenient to have the race on Sunday, so I wouldn't have to take a day off from work.

Excellent small town marathon!

A beautiful as well as flat course, great organizers, great charity. Cotter is a wonderful small town. The out-and-back out-and-back course was perfect for this race as you got to see friends and Maniacs several times so you didn't feel alone. Very friendly runners on the course. The medal was my only disappointment of the race but the Race Director says they will do better next year. Make sure to go to Nima's Pizza in Gassville after the race&world pizza competition winner!

Nice local marathon for a good cause

This is a small but well organized run... even with the half marathoners and 5K races it wasn't too congested. A nice downhill start over the first 1200 meters gave way to a flat course along the scenic White River. Packet pick-up and the homemade soups at the post race meal were definite pluses. The only downside was the course was open and sharing the road with local traffic was a bit annoying. Otherwise, it was a very good event.

My First 13.1

I chose this event as my first race at this distance. The downhill start required a lot of focus and control, due to nagging knee pain the week before, but after you get down the hill to start, it is definitely flat. The wind off the river was cool and the weather perfect. After this experience, I'm sure I will continue running this distance and may even work up to the full marathon for next year! One thing that I think would be nice is to move the race up a month or so to take advantage of the beautiful fall foliage in the Natural State.

Great little race for a great cause...

I've run both large city and small town marathons and I'd rate this marathon as being reflective of the true spirit of distance running and marathoning. The course is run along a roadway bordering the White River. The size of the field allows you to truly relax, enjoy the scenery of the valley and to participate in an event where a bunch of geniunely nice people gather for a brisk fall run. Great overall organization and great support throughout the race. I look forward to returning in the future. Thank you to all of those that supported this event and its' runners.

AMAZING! FLAT! FAST! ONE OF THE BEST!

I can't help but say good things about the race, director, help, etc. This was just an amaznig race. If you need to know how flat the course is just ask the numerous people who set PR's. There are plenty of aid stations along the way filled with Gatorade, Water, Gels, even some with fruit. The race directors are some of the nicest and easiest people to work with. Then there is the great food after the race that is just amazing. Some of it home cooked and some not. Enough tought tokeep you filled up for the route back home.

Great Little Race

What a great little race! Very well organized, lots of bathrooms, water, Gatorade along the way, snacks at the end. Shuttle bus back and forth from finish line to parking. Very low key, relaxed atmosphere. Good for beginners and veteran runners alike.

Great, small race

What a nice change from the usual HUGE marathons offered. This is a well-run, small marathon on a VERY flat, fast, certified course. Plenty of water stops, etc. along the out and back course. Neat to see the support from the community. Great lunch afterward, including some great home-made soups, etc. Medal is not that exciting, but the race is for a wonderful cause.

Great little marathon

For out of towners, there are a bunch of nice, clean, cheap chain hotels (e.g., Hampton Inn) within a few miles of the start. The course is downhill to start then FLAT as a pancake. Only the finish is chip-timed, so this is more like a 'gun time' race, so if you are trying to BQ, you need to be up front at the start. The volunteers and spectators are SO friendly and helpful. There was extremely minimal traffic on the roads, so this was a nonfactor. The medal could be a little nicer though. Post-race food is hot, bountiful and REALLY hits the spot. Logistics are good for a double on the Sunday afterwards in Tulsa, OK (Route 66 marathon), if you're a 50 stater.

Nice race

After the opening downhill mile, the course is as flat as any. The location is not very conducive for spectators, but is offset by nearly constantly meeting other runners along the out-and-back course as well as the frequency of aid stations. The pre-race pasta dinner was very good and the variety and quantity of post-race food, as well as availablility of showers at the school was much appreciated. This event supports a wonder cause and will continue to grow.

AWESOME COURSE

Can't say enough about this race. The course alone is enough to get me to come back. Could not believe how many water stations and toilets there were. The stations were great with super volunteers. The course was beautiful running along side the White River. I will definately be back. A good cause also.

Flat & Fast Course

This was my first year to do this race and I wasn't disappointed. Great organization and volunteers with aid stations about every mile. Really not as scenic as I thought it may be but it sure beat just a plain country road. The double out and back was not bad. Always fun to see the other runners and encourage each other. Almost entirely flat. If it wasn't for the wind there would have been some amazing times posted. Post race food at the school included pizza, chili and more. Not much in way of crowd support but it is on a very low populated country road. I'll do this one again!

Pleasant

I went into the race a bit hesitant about doing the out & back type course...twice! As it turned out, though, I didn't mind it at all. Very flat, plenty of aid stations, not many spectators, but that's fine by me. A sound system at the starting line would've made it seem more organized, but the volunteers were so helpful. The post-race meal & shower access was very welcome.

Great small race for a great cause

This was a well organized race. I was not sure how I would like the new out-and-back-twice course, but it was good. It is run on a small road in the country, so there are not huge crowds cheering, but the volunteers were great at the aid stops. The medal was nice for such a small race. Best of all was the cause: they raised money to build water wells in Kenya. Very cool.

Great Race, Great People, Beautiful Area

Great Race: Easy terrain; the start was a bit tight, which I heard a few participants fussing about... but otherwise no issues. Great People: Can't say enough about the organizers. Courteous. Very helpful and cheerful. Everyone was having a fun time. Beautiful Area: If you love the great outdoors, rivers, and lakes, this is the place to relax before and after the race. Good job to all. See you next year.

PR Course!

I ran the half this year and have done a lot of long runs along this course over the last 13 years. I don't know of a faster course (completely flat and straight), and as the race popularity grows, the number of spectators will grow too. And by the way, the proceeds go to a good cause.

Flattest marathon I've run

This small, convenient race benefits a great cause by providing funds to better the lives of those in a village in Kenya. The course is very flat and features a double out-and-back along the White River, which means you are almost always passing someone going the opposite direction. Aid stations are plentiful and provide gels along with water and electrolyte fluids at each location. The local residents are very hospitable and the pre-race dinner was better than at many larger events.

Great low-key marathon - definitely a PR course

This was my second time here - 5 years ago I ran the old, hilly course, which I really liked. I was a little skeptical about a double out-and-back loop course, but it was great! My rating of 5 for spectators really relates to the half-marathoners, who were terrific at cheering for those running the full. With the double loop course, you were always meeting other runners, for lots of encouragement. The course is flat, the aid stations good (with gels at all), and the organization is great. Those things, along with the benefit for the kids of Katito, Kenya, make for a great experience.

I loved this race! The course was completely flat and we were blessed with some fog that day, which added to atmosphere. The water stations were well run and the overall organizing of the event was excellent. The race was chip timed and even with a slight computer glitch, they had the full results on the internet the next day. I say, "great job!" to everyone who puts this race together. 3 F's - Flat, Fast, Friendly.

This race was a wonderful experience for such a small venue. Aid stations were all very well stocked and run by great volunteers who were enthusiastic and willing to go out of their way to help the runners. The race director is a runner herself and it shows. Very good attention to detail in every respect. Course is very flat, and very fast. This is definitely a course on which you can run a PR. The finisher's medal is actually quite nice for a race with fewer than 100 finishers. This race is truly a diamond in the rough. I would highly recommend this race to anyone!!

Well organized, friendly, flat and fast

This year's course was flat and REALLY fast. The race was well organized, and the aid stations were well supplied. There were few spectators, but the volunteers and other runners were enthusiastic. If you are looking for a BQ or PR, this is DEFINITELY the course to run. I finished in 3:29 (achieving my first BQ) with a previous PR of 3:52!!! The best part is that this event raised $16,000 for desperately needed clean water projects in Kenya (East Africa). This is the 3rd time I have run this event (1 half and 2 full marathons), and I plan to be back again next year. Thanks to the organizers and sponsors for a fantastic experience and a labor of love for the people of Kenya. THIS IS MY #1 RECOMMENDATION FOR A SMALL MARATHON.

Nice, small town marathon

It is evident that Laurie and her team work very hard on this event. The entry fee is reasonable, the volunteers are exceptional, there is plenty of real food (not just a bagel and water) inside at the finish, showers are available, and the new course is a PR-course along the river. If you do not need bands and spectators, this event is recommended.

Fun race. Flat course was great!

While they could perhaps schedule this 2 or 3 weeks earlier to have a little warmer weather (though it was warm enough once you started running), this was a very fun event. Good organization for packet pickup, pasta dinner, short racer shuttle to start and sufficient water stops with water, PowerAde, gel and food. Could have used several more porta-potties at the race start, though. Lots of great post-race food! Very friendly event.

Great small-town race for a really great cause.

One of the more challenging courses you will find. I found out quickly that there is a good reason why they call the town Mountain Home. The weather was clear and great (50's). I was using the race as a training run for Vegas 2 weeks later, but I felt so good that I ran most of it pretty hard. Great volunteers, organizers, and aid stations. All of the money raised goes to build wells in Kenya. It's a feel-good marathon all the way around. Spectators are few and far between, but extremely nice and kind. I highly recommend the pasta dinner the night before, and the free post-race meal was great as well.

Beautiful marathon in small town Arkansas

Difficult course of rolling hills in the beautiful country. The only spectators were those working the course. They were extremely nice though. Very small marathon, but intimate. Racers and the few spectators gave this marathon a very personal feel. Not around to eat for a pre-race dinner, so I would go for the spaghetti dinner offered by the race.

Fun, small-town race!

This was a small-town race that was lots of fun and for such a great cause. The pasta dinner and post-race food was great! The folks from Mountain Home were very friendly and accommodating. One man running the 5K even loaned my friend running the marathon his sunglasses on race day because she left hers back at the hotel--you don't find that sort of thing at the big-town races. Sure, the course was challenging and race day weather was less than ideal, but I like a challenge and believe it or not, I like hills. The race was very well-supported and aid stations were plentiful. There weren't many spectators (other than the cows) but I enjoyed running through the countryside. Overall, a race I will do again someday. :) The small-town, friendly atmosphere was a nice change from the large, impersonal races in which I am no more than a number.

Scenic and fun small race

I enjoy smaller marathons more than the mega-events, so I thoroughly enjoyed this race. The course was mostly in the country, with rolling hills and was very scenic. The cold and very windy day made the course pretty difficult. The fans and volunteers were very supportive, and there was great camaraderie among the relatively small field of marathoners. Volunteers brought homemade soups and chili for post-race food, which was excellent.

Hilly, challenging, friendly course

Very hilly; my first marathon, but I also live in the Ozarks and trained on hills. Miles 22 or 23 to 25 or so were rough, essentially one long hill. But the support was great. Not many spectators, given the chilly, windy, sleety conditions and rural area. Not for those who need a lot of crowd support, but okay for those who train alone in rural areas and feel comfortable with this. Running on the state highway was interesting at times, to say the least, but I felt relatively safe. The aid station folks (towards the end) crossed the road for you if you were on the wrong side (thank you!!). Great, great food... both during the course (a huge selection of fruit, pretzels, multiple kinds of cookies, Hammer Gels, PowerAde, and water at each and every aid station, and there were LOTS of aid stations) and after (homemade chillies and soups, and bread sticks from a pizza place, etc.). Great massage too. Really friendly people. It's definitely a challenge, and even for my first marathon, it was a good kind of challenge. I enjoyed it (although I wasn't saying that during that long hill towards the end)!

Nice, Small-Town Marathon

This is an extremely small, but very well organized marathon. All pre/post-race activities, as well as race start/finish, are at the local high school, so access and available parking are not issues. Aid stations were plentiful, well manned and well stocked. Course was generally well marked and there were volunteers at turns to direct you on course, as well as many law enforcers directing traffic at intersections. Course scenery is engaging - heavily wooded rural areas for the most part, and the course itself is quite challenging, with rolling hills after the first 3 miles or so, with some significant hill climbing/downhills. There were 2 out-and-back sections on the course, allowing you the opportunity to see/talk to other runners on the course, but with less than 60 marathon finishers, people were pretty spread out over the course. Food at the finish was plentiful. Overall, a really well run race - I'm only wishing I would have run it in 2007 before the course was changed to add hills in the 2nd half of the course!

Beautiful hilly scenic course

This race was an excellent way to see what Mountain Home, AR is all about. Getting to the race showed a lot of the back roads and terrain the race had to offer. The people in this town were some of the friendliest we've ever encountered. The red carpet was literally rolled out, as the race support and aid stations made you feel very special. Out on the course they would come to you offering every type of drink or supplement they could carry in their arms. They were full of smiles and thank yous for coming to their community and helping the cause. You never had to go more than 1 1/2 - 2 miles before another aid station and there were many port-a-potties if anyone needed one. The race director really put extra effort into the comforts of the runners. The police in the community were out driving the course the whole race making sure us runners were safe. The first few miles were in the neighborhoods surrounding the high school and college then headed out into the rural area that tested your endurance in 25 mph winds and many rolling hills. The scenery out in the rural area was everything I hoped for and all the cattle were a bonus. It surely wasn't my fastest run, but it was by far one of the most enjoyable.

Probably my last trip to Mountain Home

I like that the money goes to Kenya, a worthy cause. It was the primary reason I returned this year. But the change in course to a much hillier one from last year is a deal-breaker for me. One of the toughest courses I have ever run. Not for a first-timer or someone trying to qualify for Boston. Wasn't always sure which side of the highway to run on. If I ran on the left side, the water stations were on the right; if I switched, they were on the left. Not much of any shoulder to run on, so you had to run on the highway and keep an eye on traffic.

Worthwhile Cause for a Marathon

The course finishes miles away from the post-race activities, requiring a shuttle to get back to the start line, which is primarily why I gave it 4 stars. It's almost like running two courses, since the second half of the course is flat (running along a river), though the pavement is rough (like compressed gravel). First half is hilly, with the decline after mile 14 being the most extreme road downhill I've ever encountered - my heels felt like they were going to burn off. Lots of scenery and variety. Race is very well organized and the post-race massage was the best I've ever received - the therapist is not a clock-watcher and really takes time with each runner. Delicious post-race food, and the Friday night feed was excellent (bow tie pasta was very delicious). Spectators were sparse, but enthusiastic. Very worthy cause if you are looking to participate in a marathon to help others. Funds raised by this marathon have helped to install 20 fresh water wells for a village in Kenya. Fresh water is something we take for granted, but these people used to have to spend all day just gathering dirty water for their needs. Certainly help put things in perspective with every water stop.

Outstanding small-town marathon

This race was so much fun and so well organized that I am sure to do it again. The course featured rolling hills of beautiful scenery all the way until mile 15 where it flattened out in the White River flats. The number of spectators was low but they were so enthusiastic that they really gave runners a lift. The race support was excellent and the free massage at the end was a treat. Speaking of treats, they had home-made chili and soups, plus awesome deserts for the runners at the end. This is a marathon worth getting to and it is for a really worthwhile cause. Thanks to Race Director Laura Kassinger and the volunteers. Y'all are awesome.

A great event with a special purpose!

I went to Mountain Home, Arkansas this past weekend to run in the marathon there. It was kind of a spur-of-the-moment decision on my part. You meet really interesting people at every race. A group of guys I met in Mt. Home were going to run this marathon on Saturday and then drive to Tulsa, OK, for that marathon on Sunday (and my wife thinks I am nuts!). We ran in Arkansas on a beautiful day. Shortly after the run I saw them off to Tulsa and I went home. The Mountain Home Marathon is a charity event started just a couple of years ago to help a village in Kenya. As part of this event, they have a 5K, half-marathon and full marathon for adults - and a young children's "marathon" for 5 and under kids. I won't bore you with the details of how it all got started, but there was a short presentation at the pre-race pasta dinner to inform people why they hold this event. It is a small event, with no more than 150 participants in the 4 races. Even so, in the short time they have been doing it they have managed to raise over $56,000.00, with virtually all of this money going to the village they have adopted. World Vision administers the funds, and at least 87% of all money raised gets to the target village. Knowing this did not make the marathon any easier, but it gave me a good feeling to know where my entry fee went and to know that it was going to help somebody's life a little bit. A key point of emphasis is that the organization and support for this race was excellent. The weather on Saturday was perfect; it was about 45 degrees F at the start of the race and slightly overcast, and by the end of the race it was clear and sunny and over 70 degrees F. There were not many participants in the marathon - I estimate about 50 or fewer. The marathon, half-marathon and 5K all starting at 8 a.m. The kids event was at 11 a.m., before the post-race lunch began. The marathon and the 5K started together ran a loop through the Arkansas State University, Mt Home, campus. The marathoners continued past the 5K finish and out into the country. The half-marathon started at the halfway point for the marathon and finished at the same place as the marathon. The race was very well organized with good support at the many aid stations throughout the course. The race was a point-to-point course and was kind of a two-part race; the first 14 miles were very hilly, with some very steep downhill sections, and the last 12 miles as flat as a table top. In the first part of the race, the uphill sections were not as steep as the downhill sections, but were longer. The scenery was very interesting and pleasant fall colors were abundant throughout the race, but particularly in this part of the run. The first part of the race, particularly the downhill sections, was very hard on the legs. The last 12 miles were out-and-back section run on a very flat road along a river in a valley and was without much shade or breeze. The temperatures did not get "hot," but it did get warm enough to affect the runners. This part of the race was hard on your mind, but that is not unusual for a marathon. The last 6 miles or so is always a test of the mental fitness of the runner as much as it is the physical fitness. Overall I give this event high ratings in most categories with the exception of ease of access. There is no easy way to get to Mountain Home, but the drive up from Memphis was very pretty. Other than this, it was a fun event with very nice people and excellent hospitality. I will do it again!

An Ozark treasure

I did the half marathon and enjoyed it so much I had to post my comments. The drive to Mountain home was beautiful which was a real treat! Packet pickup was a breeze and all the race folks were very friendly! The course was flat...really folks! My Garmin showed very little elevation change. I liked the out and back course because even though there were no spectators, all the runners were encouraging each other and it was enough! Water stops were plentiful and they had powerade at all of them.It was cold that morning but the 'bag drop' was right up by the start line so we kept our jackets on right up till start time. The post race massage was great and the post race meal was delicious! The people of Mountain Home are warm and friendly and the race is for a very good cause. Our hotel gave us an outrageously late checkout time so we all got to have a nice hot shower!! I loved this race and plan to do it again!

Organization was good. Crews at each support station were encouraging and they made great spectators. Thank you for the water and sport drink. The gel was helpful beyond measure. Some places on the course felt a little lonely but every turn was manned and the police get my applause for their help. My family got lost trying to find the finish line and missed my entry so I wish there was a picture I could buy. This was my first marathon and loved it. Thank you for making the effort for a great cause. I am glad I participated.

Great experience in Mountain Home, AR

I ran in this year's Mountain Home and it was a great experience. I ran in the marathon and my son was able to participate in the 5K. The course is hilly, however scenic. The strengths of this marathon are the volunteers and the cause - to support orphan children in Kenya. The pre-race dinner was an added bonus and the after-race homemade desserts would be hard to match.

Nice rural jaunt, well organized.

My first, and the experience has made me want to do it again. Well placed and well manned aid stations with enthusiastic local supporters. The run can get a bit lonely at times with so few participants, but I commend the organizers for a race well done.

Wonderful Experience

I ran the 5K in 2004 and I wanted to be up to a bigger challenge for 2005, which I was. I ran the marathon and trained most of the year for it. It was an experience I will never forget (instead of the old 3.1 miles, running 26.2 miles).

A hidden gem

This is the 'down home comfort food of marathons.' A rural country marathon with enthusiastic town support. The course is challenging but not so difficult as to take away from the enjoyment of beautiful countryside. The post-race feed was a potluck provided by the local residents. The water stops were enthusiastically manned.

Perfect Little Race

Even though this was the smallest number of participants I've ever run with, it was definitely one of the best run races I've ever had the pleasure of doing. Running with both first-timers and extreme marathon veterans was a real treat. The rolling hills in the first half were a great warm up... nowhere near as hilly as I was expecting. Of course, looking up at the bluffs towering over the White River, and at the little dripping springs adjacent to the course, was pleasantly distracting toward the second half of the run, which was very flat and fast. The aid stations were fantastic. Nothing was missing. They were all well located manned with enthusiastic and efficient crews. This race support far out-performed the ironman-distance triathlon I did this fall. I also talked with friends who just got back from the Dublin, Ireland marathon. They had only water and some gatorade every 3 miles; no gels, no bananas, no grapes, pretzels, or cookies, which were available at nearly all the aid stations in the MHM (Mountain Home Marathon). They were really roughing it. It was fun bragging on the MHM support! Since I get even more stupid when I'm exhausted, I left my drop bag (another 'big race' type treat) at the finish line, which is several miles from the start/post-race meal/parking location. It was brought back for me, but another runner unintentionally placed it where no one would find it for a while. Before I left, the race director had a whole team of assistants tracking it down. I got a call on my cellphone while driving home (Houston) only a few hours later saying the contents would be mailed to me Monday morning. Where else could one get such personal service rectifying one's own screw up? These are just a few examples of the joys of a small but growing event such as this. I'm glad I was able to participate. I even PR'd over my San Diego time!! -Rick Hood 8 marathons

Hard course but so worth it!

The course was difficult because of the hills, but the scenery was beautiful and the people and aid stations were great! I would definitely recommend it for people wanting to run in Arkansas.

Lovely country setting and nice folks

This is the perfect marathon for folks looking for a scenic country run with decent support, enthusiastic helpers, and just enough difficulty to let you know you earned your 26.2. The course begins to challenge early on with some rolling hills that require some smart running, but relents at the half-way point giving runners a flat last 11 miles or so. A little town with fewer than 70 marathoners does not leave much for crowd support, but that's OK, I don't run marathons to be cheered on by strangers. I plan on coming back to this gem every year.

Great Time Marathon - Loved It

I enjoyed the hilly course that thinned out the runners some. The out-and-back gave me a chance to see friends in front and back. All this helped me to have my second best time after running 100+ marathons. It was an excellent overall marathon. I will recommend it to other 50-staters and friends. I will be back in 2006 probably. I am really looking forward to it.

Great marathon for a great cause

The race was as much about community as it was about running. The entire town seemed to be dedicated to the same cause of raising money for two orphanages in Kenya. At each of the aid stations, enthusiastic volunteers welcomed each runner to Arkansas. The first half of the course was moderately hilly in a rural setting. The last half was downhill or flat. Runners are welcomed at the finish line with warm blankets and a ride back to the start for a warm meal. The volunteers and local citizens always made us feel at home in Mountain Home. We will definitely return and support the orphanages.

Nice country run

This was a low-key marathon with a very scenic course and a supportive, small-town feel. I enjoyed the whole experience, course support was adequate, aid stations (though every two miles) were well staffed and stocked, and I particularly like point-to-point runs. This is the kind of run that I like to do over and over again.

Beautiful community marathon for a good cause!

This was my 92nd marathon and I truly found this one to be one of my favorites. I rank the course as being the 4th prettiest. It was hilly the first half, but flattened the last half - even a bit downhill. Great fun! The race director and her volunteers were great! Well organized and very appreciative of the opinions of those of us who run everywhere. Lack of course support and different start/finish locations were the only somewhat negatives of the event. The aid station volunteers were GREAT, tho, and the beauty of the course would be compromised if either the start/finish were relocated so leave it alone!! Hotel accommodations, cost and - most importantly - the cause of the marathon make it a winner!!!

Fun, Fun, Fun

I ran the 5k, but the layout of the course was really good.
