Well-run 'small feel' marathon. A nice event!

I chose this as my Michigan race and am happy I did. The race director and his crew are passionate about what they do and it shows. All of the little things that can make or break a race were done well. Plenty of porta-pots. Well stocked, plentiful aid stations. Well marked course. Efficient packet pick-up/expo. Great swag - a nice medal, traditional socks, a gaiter and a nice race shirt. It's not a large race (numbers probably down being the first year back after the pandemic) but you can tell that the crew & volunteers care about your experience, and throw in a little bit of fun to boot. (The obvious example would be the 'Celebrity' Pace Groups, based on the marathon results of the rich and famous... the 3:14 'Pi' group, the 4:13 'Kevin Hart' group, the Oprah and Dubya paces... etc. A nice touch). The course is largely flat, scenic in spots and not so scenic in others. There are some downtown segments and some park/lake/bike path stretches and it makes for a fine overall circuit. The weather this year was nearly perfect and all of these factors led to running my best race time since March 2017. Add in some great bar/restaurant spots I found near my hotel, and this was probably one of my favorite races in recent seasons. Your mileage may vary - but I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Amazing First Marathon Experience

I traveled from Columbus, Ohio to attend the Grand Rapids Marathon. Specifically what drew me was the course time limits followed by the course style (mostly flat through a beautiful landscape). From the moment I got into town you could feel a positive vibe at the expo and that carried over to race morning. I took the early start and it made a huge difference. It made for a comfortable first 4 miles and allowed me to finish when it was still earlier than night. The course was spectacular. A great mix of city into a nature setting. Being in the back of the pack, no never felt alone on the course. The way it is set up, even after the 13 mile mark you are still seeing hundreds of people running with you the opposite way. This is a huge mental boost. It was not until the last 3-4 miles that the pack spread out (after being on the course for almost 6.5 hours) and even then every aid station was fully stocked and staffed to cheer you on. It was truly amazing. The finish line is still open and you feel like a champion crossing over even that long into the race. Family friendly and too notch.

First race, amazing experience

This was my first race ever. I've never even done a 5k. I was unsure of what to expect. I was blown away. Everything was easy, I felt prepared, but was never given more information than I needed at the moment. I loved getting to run thru Downtown. The support and encouragement from all the volunteers was inspiring. And because this race was so enjoyable, I'm a runner now! I already have my next race and I'm planning on seeing you guys next year!

My favorite marathon, period!

I simply love everything about this race! From keeping warm before the start at the Y, to the beautiful paved trail full of fall colors and stamina-inducing smell of falling leaves (at least that's what it does for me!), to local micro-brews after the race (and no, you don't need a bib coupon to get one - or two, or & well, it's completely up to you just how much you choose to celebrate...), everything is done meticulously! It is basically impossible to take the wrong turn (for instance where the half and full split off, or anywhere else) as the course marshals and all volunteers do an amazing job, even though everything is marked well to begin with. This was my 4th Grand Rapids marathon and the first ever to brake the 2:50 barrier. Although not as pancake-flat as some other marathons I've run such as Chicago, the rolling is minimal and it's still a fast PR course. So far I PR'd on it every single time! I keep coming back despite the 3-hour drive from Illinois.

Nice course, great organization

Well run small marathon. Great communication in advance, and good organization on race day. Nice to have the Y open with heat and lots of bathrooms - especially since it was very cold (around 32 F) on race morning. Tons of water/gatorade stops with nice extras like cookies, multiple Gu stops, pretzels and pickle juice. Nice course with a few very small hills, but nothing serious. Much of the course is run on a long out and back through a wooded park, with a nice stretch running around a lake. Great 'celebrity' pacers - with paces to match celebrity finish times. Huge shout out to the awesome P. Diddy pacers who got me to the finish with a post-40 PR. Nice medal, too, and also long-sleeve tech shirt and socks (cool!). Not a ton of spectators on course, but they were enthusiastic and as many as could be expected for a smaller marathon. I definitely recommend this marathon!

Great race - very well organized

I registered only two days before the race. Didn't know what to expect. I loved it. Pricey but extremely well organized and a very friendly attitude.

A Super Marathon

A super marathon with a LONG out and back that was strangely refreshing. The race directors were kind to let me start 25 minutes late. Oops. The beer at the end was the BEST, followed by a trip to Founder's Brewery. A super win.

Good Course for a PR or BQ

This was my 26th marathon on 22 different courses. It is an easy walk from several good downtown hotels to the expo/start/finish area and restaurants. Combined 1/2 and full start was no issue(in many other races it is), as there were only about 5,000 runners in total. It would be nice to have an organized 'pasta dinner' option, as most of the nearby Italian places were pricey and lacking in vegetarian options.

Excellent choice for MI

I'm pursuing a marathon in all 50 states and this was my choice for Michigan. It was a great choice and I highly recommend this marathon! I review each marathon I run and I usually list the good things as well as the areas for improvement. However, for this marathon I can think of only one thing to complain about. Everything was truly that good! I'll list the pros anyway: -Beautiful course (after you get through the industrial section in the first few miles) -Loved the traffic-free sections on the bike path and appreciated that non-racers stayed off the path early start for the velocity-challenged was great. -The overall support for slower people was appreciated. -Excellent communication from RD Don -Nice to have everything in one place with ample parking (expo, start, and finish) -Though I didn't take advantage, nice to have showers available at the Y -Course was well-marked. I was never confused. -Loved the pickle juice at an aid station late in the course -The best part of the race was getting a high-five from RD Don at the finish!! I could go on, but I think you get the picture that this was a well-organized race with attention to detail. If I had to complain about something it would be that I couldn't always run the tangent on the out and back section, thus ending up with a 26.47 mile read on my Garmin. Also, the food at the finish was mediocre but I did appreciate the pickles. I am so glad I ran this race for my MI marathon. I really enjoyed sightseeing in the area. I highly recommend the Fredrik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park.

good race lacks crowd support.

This is a good run. It is really geared towards elite runners though as there is no crowd support on this race and the volunteers are really only at the major mile markers and water stations. Plan on the fall colors bringing you into the finish. Most of the runners have music stuck in their ear and there isn't much support from any crowds.

Wonderful Fall Marathon

I ran this marathon three years in a row 2009-2011. It is a very well organized event, that also typically offers great race weather. The course is flat and fast. A great place to PR/BQ. A great midsized marathon where you can avoid the crowds. Definitely a Marathon worth traveling for. This race holds a special place with me because it was my first marathon.

By far the best race I have run!

I chose to take on this marathon as a first time ever running event. I started my training on January 1, and I couldn't even run a 1/4 of a mile! I ended up running the marathon with my brother (veteran marathoner), and I finished in under 5 hours (just barely). I loved it! The scenery was beautiful, the organization was spectacular, the expo was well organized. . I can't say enough about it. I have since then ran 5 halfs, and now I am training to do another full. I think I was spoiled by picking this one as my first.

Great Race!

Ran in 2012 and liked it so much I did it again in '14. It is run the same day as Detroit and I can honestly say I will never run Detroit again. GR has a great course, easy to get to (free) parking, you can wait inside a nice warm building before the race, the number of runners is just right, plenty of hotel space and free beer at the end! Not sure what else you could want. The only downside is the paucity of spectators around miles 22-25. Not sure what else could be done, but that won't stop me from coming back in '15.

This is the marathon you should run!

This was my first marathon and I couldn't have asked for a more positive experience. If I never run another marathon again (though I plan on many more) I would be happy with the decision to have run in Grand Rapids. It was small enough to avoid the confusion and crowding of a big city race but large enough that they are well-equipped and know what they are doing. The course is beautiful and crowd support was constant but not overwhelming. Don Kern's marathon news is the icing on the cake!

Best First Marathon Experience One Could Ask For

This was my first marathon and I have to say I absolutely LOVED every minute of it! The course was BEAUTIFUL and well planned out. The spectators were great and help keep the morale up. I had several friends/family come to spectate and it was easy for them to meet me at several different points in the race. The aide stations were fully equiped with anything you could need and the volunteers seemed to be having a great time and were very encouraging. Because of such a great experience, I think I am a marathoner for life!

Awesome!

I promised my family that I would only run one marathon, but after Grand Rapids, I am hooked! The view around the lakes was beautiful. The fans were great. There was a great selection of real food on the course. There's nothing like an Oreo after 20 miles of running.

Perfectly Executed

This was a great marathon all around! I just wanted to say how impressed I was with everything: well organized, the course was beautiful, flat, plenty of spectators, plenty of gatorade/water stops. Just an all around great experience for my first marathon. The bar has been set very high!

Great Day

I may have run marathons when younger, but my son only talked me into the first one when I turned 60. Ran Fox Valley IL 4 weeks before and came away hurt and with slowest of 5 previous marathons. So here I was with no pretense, not sure about finishing. The cambered road someone else mentioned was a killer to my left hip and the pain that required PT was coming back. Hat's off to the mother of 5 random stranger who was doing her second. After the rough section and with about 4 to go, I came upon her walking, and I started walking & talking with her. Long story short we were encouraged and had more run left in us than either thought. We both fed off each other's whatever to pick up the pace. She got her under 4 as did I (even BQ for me..I never did see the Will Farrell group I started with until in the beer spot). Sweet. Great day, shower so nice. Even with the road camber, high consideration for 2015. Running mechanics are sooooo important. And my son got his BQ too!

2:59 Pace Group -EXCELLENT

I ran with the 2:59 pace group (Chris Gregory and Ken Brooks), first time running with a pace group. These guys were excellent, yelling out splits, mile markers, talking and keeping our group inspired and keeping our mind off the effort we were putting in. If there is any way to let them know what a great job they did I would appreciate it. The pacers got me to finish under 2:58, which I could never have done on my own. Thank you so much pacers.

Well organized, great mid-sized marathon

This was my first time running this race, and second marathon ever (ended up with almost a 5 minute improvement over my first full marathon). The course is a bit technical - lots of turns, but it is fairly easy to find the tangent and run it. A couple of small hills in the race, but nothing huge. Beautiful time of year to be running - this year it was a bit at the start, but the fall colours were great. Roads are blocked, so no issues with traffic. In the full, there is a part that is difficult for spectators to access, I think, and there is a portion where you don't see many other people other than the runners, and water stop volunteers. Maybe a half-dozen more course marshals would be perfect - there were a couple of turns that were sign-marked, and pretty obvious, but a volunteer would be lovely. That being said, the course is well marked, and there were always runners close by - I never felt like I was running alone and/or lost. Start and finish is at the Y, and there was a lot of parking. Getting to the parking was a bit slow, but not the fault of the race at all...something about a few thousand runners arriving at the same time. Free showers after the race at the Y, and a great food spread after the run (the usual bagels, bananas, oranges, yogurt, plus protein drinks, ice cream, beer, and chili). Waterstops were amazing. It seemed like there was a primer for all the volunteers because all the volunteers seemed to be holding the cups the same way (hand flat, and water on palm) and the water was in different cups than the Gatorade, so it was pretty easy to know what you were getting, even if the volunteers weren't letting you know (which they were). A couple of stops seemed a little understaffed, but I never had an issue getting water/Gatorade. Aid Stations were manned and had little cots as well. Spectators were really good, again in the full marathon there is a section where there aren't too many people, but I will say that with the 'cheer sections' that were set up, there were a lot of people that were at most, if not all of them, and even if they were there for a specific runner, it seemed like most of the spectators cheered for everyone, which was really nice, and appreciated. It's a mid-sized race so you aren't going to have the Boston/Chicago/Toronto crowds, but it seems like the city gets behind it, and the spectators out are enthusiastic. For the size of the race I thought the support was fantastic. Overall, a really great race. Well organized, and has a really nice course.

Best course in Pure Michigan!!

I could not have asked for a better first marathon experience than what I had with the Grand Rapids Metro Health Marathon! The course was beautiful mixing both great downtown GR city views and beautiful Pure Michigan Fall folliage!!! The aid stations were stocked full of plenty of hydration/nutrition, medical aid and HIGH ENERGY!!!! And I could not have asked for better weather! I much prefer the cool weather than warm when running! I can't leave out the amazingly comfortable socks and stylish long-sleeve tech shirt included with race entry! And to cap it off, Marathon Don was amazing from the start of my marathon planning keeping us updated and on track with training, through the last week of training reassuring and encouraging us with his daily humerus emails that our training will not fail us and we can do this, to the end of the marathon crossing the finish line where I was full of emotion from what I had just accomplished, He embraced me with a hug telling me 'That's what a marathon is all about' Thank you for a wonderful experience! And although I swore this would be my first and last marathon, don't be surprised if you see me again!

Hands down my favorite race

I ran the full in 2012, setting a huge PR, and fell in love with this race. Don Kern and his team get every detail right, and runners can just focus on running, knowing that everything they need is already taken care of. In 2014, I came back for the half and set an unexpected, post-injury PR. Race directors everywhere should take a lesson from the Grand Rapids team.

Pretty good course and AWESOME organization

The race organizers are great and it's good race to do! It's mostly flat and scenic. I've done the half and the full. It has been pretty cold both times, but not too bad (I'd rather it be cold than hot!). There weren't too many spectators; however, I was at the back of the pack :)

Wonderful!

This was my first full marathon and I would highly recommend this to anyone. I have run several halfs so I was very nervous about completing a full but the race staff and the crowds were all great. The course was flat and not swamped with spectators, which I liked. It was easy to navigate and the pace teams were very helpful. I plan on doing it again next year with my sister.

Great Marathon but AVOID RUNNING WITH PACE GROUPS!

Great event! Race course is beautiful, temp ideal, hardly no wind, only complaint is pace group leaders run too fast. Last year I ran with 3:14 pace group and they were 15 seconds too fast. This year ran with 3:29, again 15 seconds per mile too fast in spite of the fact they crossed finish line at 3:29. Over pacing came in large segments.

Bathrooms

I think that it is a great course and a great time, the one thing I would like to see change is that there would be more bathrooms on the course. When trying to keep the time low and waiting for an available port-a-john this was difficult.

Amazing race top to bottom!

This is my 3rd marathon and it is by FAR the best organized and fun marathon and RACE I've done. It's the perfect size. The course is beautiful, one semi long but not very steep hill earlier on in the race, amazingly energetic volunteers and great crowds in spots. I PR'd by almost 5 minutes this time around. I'm a huge fan on this race all the way around and even though I promised my wife I'd take a break from marathons, I think I'll need to come back for the half at least next year :-)

Beautiful route and well organized

Very good route and great marathon experience. I broke my toe 5 weeks ago and my training came to a halt. But I had registered for this marathon and ran it anyway. People were very supportive along the route even though my time was very slow due to the lack of adequate training and broken toe. Great experience for a guy from central Illinois!!

Awesome Race!

1st time running the GR Marathon and Don Kern puts on a great race! Don keeps you updated with his weekly emails and Don knows what runners want with from his own running. For being a smaller marathon, it has a big time feel from the get-go as the fans do a hell of a job cheering on. And when there aren't fans, it is okay because you are running the trails and have the beauty to push you on. Don also has numerous aid stations and they are never to far apart. Look forward to #2 of this race in 2015.

Beautiful, fast, and extremely well organized

I've run 6 marathons now and this is by far my most favorite. I've ran 3 majors and I honestly think that the organization for this race is better and more meticulous than Marine Corps. It's a fast course and it wasn't boring. I met two other women on the course and we all pushed each other to Boston Qualifying times. We had never met before. It's just that awesome of a race. I may be a little biased because I'm from Michigan but I've moved away and came back for this race and will continue to do so every year!

My Favorite Race!

Yesterday was my first time running the Grand Rapids marathon, and I have to say, it has been my favorite race so far (12 halfs and 7 fulls under my belt). Not only did I PR, but I took 11 minutes off my previous PR. The course was stunning, the volunteers were friendly, and the shirt and medals were fabulous. I am now encouraging all my running friends to race with you guys next year. Thanks for a great time! Kudos to everyone involved!

Best first half marathon course!

This was my first half marathon and I could not have asked for a better race! The course was mostly flat, the organization was great-it was easy to pick up my packet on Saturday and for my family to 'follow' and cheer me on throughout the course! The crowd was great at cheering us on and the director of the race was there at the finish line to congratulate us, this was a fantastic experience for me! Thanks to everyone for their hard work in putting this great event together and to all the volunteers that made this possible.

Wonderful experience!

There could not possibly have been a better day to run a marathon. The weather was darn near perfect, the course was (mostly) beautiful decked out in fall colors, the spectators were boisterous (if a little thin in spots) and the volunteers gracious and welcoming. The course is a nice mix of doable hills and long stretches of flat. My only quibble about the course is that the last 3 miles are kind of ugly and not particularly inspiring when you need some inspiration most. There were very few spectators in the last two miles until you were nearly at the finish line. Spectators are not really numerous anywhere on the course, but the ones that were out were enthusiastic. This is NOT a race for someone who has to have constant crowd support. There are some pretty lonely, although quite lovely, miles. Overall a wonderful day. I nailed my splits and got my BQ with a minute and change to spare. Would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a good day. Thanks for such a wonderful experience.

Love the GR Marathon!

After reading all of the great reviews, my expectations were high, and this race did not disappoint! There were many supportive emails sent by the race director prior to the race, confirming all of the major and minor details so runners had little to worry about. The access to the YMCA before and after the race was very helpful. The course was flat and beautiful and many people came out to cheer. There were plenty of aid stations and the volunteers were fantastic! It was literally one of the best race experiences I've had.

Great race and beer at the finish!

I ran my first marathon on this course, so I'm a bit partial, but I love this race. The race director has a passion for the running community and it shows. As he shakes hands and hugs as many finishers as he can, the whole event is special. For 2014, a local brewery and sponsor brewed the 'Mile 27', a special treat at the end. I should just spring for the 'lifetime entry' right now, because I know I'll be back over and over.

PR course and a Great event.

This was my first time pacing, and it was a great feeling to see some folks go after and get their Pr's and BQ's. I did not hear any complaints on the course, and you know with runners that is pretty rare. The meet director is accessible and genuinely cares about the runner and race. This is not a cash cow marathon, this is a well done marathon in a perfect fall setting with a flat course. Choose this race if you want to get the most bang for your buck, and get treated like an elite no matter what time you finish. First class.

Must-Do Fall Marathon

The course was beautiful, awesome crowd support throughout, plenty of water stops (much appreciated!), the volunteers, easy & ample parking, the free kids marathon (which my daughter loved!), running my marathon PR, a free 26.2 sticker, a warm place to hang out before, and most of all, getting a hand shake and huge hug from Don when I crossed the finish line! Well Organized race, Great for BQ!

My second time running GRM, easy free parking, showers at the Y, free Beer, great pacers. For a small race the crowd support was great and the volunteers did an excellent job.You can tell this race was put together by a runner and race director that cares. Three gu stations, pickle juice, and plenty of fluids at the aid stations. Only item I would like to see would be Chicken broth, they provide it during Ironman races and its awesome. Especially luke warm on a cold fall day. Excellent course with some very minor rollers. Great place to run for a BQ, my second at GRM in two races. Great to see Don Kern greeting all runners at the finish.

Even Better the 2nd time around

Once again Grand Rapids had near ideal weather. We arrived in town the night before the race, went to the expo, had a quick packet pickup and found some deals on items for sale. Race morning was quite cold, thank goodness the YMCA lets the runners wait inside until race time, because standing outside would have been freezing! I had several more friends with me this year over last and we huddled close to the start at 7:45 and heard a great rendition of 'Oh Canada' and the 'Star Spangled Banner'. The pace group we we going to hang with was called the Sub Lancers - to represent Lance Armstrong's 2:59 marathon head up by Chris, Matt and Ken. These guys are the real deal, incredible pacers. We were off at 8:00 sharp and moved smoothly through downtown Grand Rapids to the trails. There were even more spectators there this year than last, and many more faster runners which really helps me. The route is beautiful and on some very wooded trails, but at no time was I ever alone, the number of runners for this race is close to ideal. the pickle juice was just what I needed at mile 21 as I was starting to cramp. Upon leaving the woods and heading back to the finish line was a relief knowing there a just a few miles left, and those miles went fast. I crossed the finish line seconds slower than last year. A volunteer must have thought I looked terrible because she escorted me for 5 minutes before letting me go. Speaking of volunteers - TOP NOTCH. From the aid stations, to the start and finish line. I finished with a hot shower to warm up.

Nicely Organized, Perfect Weather

This was my 50th marathon and second time at Grand Rapids. A very nicely organized, well-run race, and both times the weather was just right for a marathon. It is a fast course, my second and third best times (out of 50) have been at Grand Rapids. It is obvious that it is run by runners, and not some corporate model. Lots of good local support, as evidenced by all the good food at the finish. Course does not cross too many roads, so the spectators are concentrated in a handful of areas. The pacer in my group, Rick Ganzi, was spot-on. Highly recommended.

Fast, flat, scenic, boston qualifier

I have run 9 marathons (including big city runs - Chicago, Boston, NYC) and this marathon was top notch. Super organized. Easy to park/get to the expo (and nice expo for such a small race). LOVED that I could park 5 minutes from the Start (getting there only 1 1/2 hours before it began), sit in the YMCA until 7:40 and walk out and then be at the front of the starting line. The first few miles are nothing to write home about - through some city streets of GR. But, most of the course is beautiful, scenic and a fall foliage tour of SW Michigan. It's fast, mostly flat (maybe like 2 very very small hills) and an easy PR/BQ if thats what you are looking for. There are not a ton of spectators, but I thought quite a few considering the course went through a lot of beautiful forests. Totally paved, not a trail run. Lots of water stops with H20/Gatorade, Pickle Juice, Gummy Bears, I was impressed w/ the enthusiasm of the volunteers at the water stops. Easy to spectate (my husband drove around and saw me 5 times). If you like big city runs with wall to wall spectators and running through cities, this isn't for you. But, if you love a small town race that's pretty, and you can just zone out and run, I highly recommend. I drove up from Chicago and would do this race again!

Fantastic small-city marathon experience

The organizers clearly care deeply about the experience of the runners. Volunteers are plentiful and well-trained and provide all the GU, pickle juice and fruit along the course you could hope for. The route spends very little time on streets and focuses on the relative seclusion of well-paved park paths - for most of the route you can't even hear cars let along see them. The start and finish are at the most amazing YMCA ever created, which allowed runners to stay warm right until the gun went off and then, after it was over, there were warm showers and (I couldn't even believe this was happening) a hot tub in which I felt completely pampered before heading out for all-I-could-eat-and-drink chili and beer. Fantastic.

Amazing

All I have to say is amazing! What a great well organized race. This was my first marathon and I loved that it was close to home for me but gave a a beautiful color tour around the city with an amazing crowd that cheered at several areas of the course. My family was able to get around and watch at different spots and they found it easy to get around. Thank you!!! I'll be back!

Enjoyable, well planned and well supported race

Lots of community support. Great volunteers. Excellent information feeds from the race director leading up to race day in the form of emails. website is very good source of info. Sense of humor and good fun about the race. Nice pace groups. Course was interesting with beautiful fall colors. Course is open for a long time, so runners of many abilities can enjoy their run.

Great orginization and finish line food!

This was a great 1/2 marathon race. I ran my PR (1:35:10) for the second year in a row. The course is nice and flat with just a couple of hills to make it a good challenge. I will definitely be back next year and I might train to take on the marathon this time.

Great overall experience. Highly recommended.

Michigan in the fall is truly beautiful and the course highlights the autumn colors. There aren't tens of thousands of spectators or a sea of people, but it felt like there were always people along the roads or just a little up ahead, as well as other runners (both full and half-marathoners). So even though it's not as big as Chicago, you won't be lonely or bored during the race. The support is great, the race is very well organized, the course is fast and the weather is ideal (cool). What else do you need?

awesome race support and beautiful course!

I ran the half marathon for the second time and it was just as great as the first. I did find that they were out of energy gel at the only aid station that carried it during the half, but it was more than made up for with the awesome food and beer at the finish line!

Great Day of Running

I am a slower runner and started out in the pack. Slowly I fell behind, but enjoyded the course a lot. Running later in race, fans and water stations were unstaffed. This did not bother me. Water was left in cups on the table. I was really slow that day because of a dislocated toe coaching football a few weeks before. It was an awesome experience and I am redoing it this year with my daughter.

Such a great experience!!

Grand Rapids 2013 was my first marathon. I had a great experience. The crowds were great, the course was flat, it was wonderfully organized. I will be back this fall to run again. My only wish is that the bibs were personalized so that you can draw even more energy from the crowd.

An excellent race

This was my first marathon after a long absence from running. I was nervous, and wanted a race that was well organized and simple so I could reserve my energy for the run. I chose Grand Rapids on the basis of previous reviews, and everything about the race lived up to its billing. Packet pickup was a breeze, and even though I was later in the day, I received a (very nice) shirt in the size I had ordered. Race morning parking was easy to access and the Y staff let us huddle in the building to stay warm before the race (even though this essentially congested the whole building). Bag drop/start line were well organized. During the run, water/gatorade stops were plentiful and well stocked. I think towards the end someone handed me an orange. The medals were very nice. Crowd support was a little thin at a few places, and the course was such that it was difficult for family to get around to many places to cheer. Thats really the only negative I saw. I had a wonderful race weekend, and will definitely do this one again.

Awesome

The course is very pretty and for the most part flat. I never got bored and there were a lot of spectators to cheer you on right when you needed them. It was very well organized and there was an excellent selection of food after the race. My only complaint is that the water stations got a little bit backed up and it was hard to distinguish whether they had gatorade or water.

One of the best.

The Grand Rapids Marathon was my 13th marathon and I was really impressed. The course was great, excellent spectators were out and when I could not see them I swear I could hear them from a mile away. Perfect amount course support and that pickle juice at mile 21 may have really helped. The course was never boring and felt quick the whole time. It is not a huge race like the majors, but there were always enough runners to keep me motivated.

Great race, aid stations troublesome

This is my second time running GR and it was overall a very positive experience. The only negative aspect I feel needs to be addressed would be how the aid station volunteer hold the water cups (I know it sounds petty but it actually is an important aspect of the race. I am the aid station coordinator for a couple large races in MI.) They set the cups on their hands and hold their arms out steady so runners are supposed to try to grab them. Volunteers should hold the cups by the lip and follow runner with their hands to ease the grabbing process. I can not even count the number of people I saw trying to grab cups just to knock them out of the volunteers hands. Normally hydration is the least of my worries during a long race/run but I never knew if I was going to actually be able to get water at the aid stations during this race.

Great event for a first time marathon!

I have ran several half marathon races and was looking for a nice midwest marathon in the fall for my first full. I looked at several picked the Grand Rapids race. I was drawn to the scenic, flat course, cooler temps and the size. It was large enough to have a good level of spectators but not too large to overwhelm me as a first time marathoner. The fall colors and great fall weather did not disappoint! Ending at the YMCA was a great bonus as I was able to get a hot shower before heading over to Founders for some great local beer.

Great Marathon for Everyone!

This is my favorite marathon! I live in Chicago but I run GRM (almost) every year and not Chicago. If you're running a full marathon for fun, go ahead and run in Chicago. If you want to make it to Boston, run GRM. If it's your first time running a full marathon, run GRM. If you have little kids, run GRM (because your kids will love it). My husband drives all over and cheers me on with our 3 kids at 3 different places during the race in addition to seeing me at the start line and then at the finish line, so I got to see them 5 times during the race (you'd be lucky if your family sees you running once during the race in Chicago!) The organization is superb as everyone agrees - Don and his team is the best. The course is flat and beautiful. My husband drops me off at the parking lot of the Y about 25 minutes before the race starts, then I check in my bag and then go to the bathroom INSIDE the building, hop into the moving crowd as the race starts. No waiting in the cold. No smelly port-a-potty! After the race I love taking a hot shower at the Y, then soak my cold and tired body in the hot tub for 10 minutes (I take my bathing suit too!). The post race food is superb - no leftover pasta from the night before!

LOVE THIS COURSE!

This was my first marathon, but I've finished the half here three times. The Race Director is amazing! The course is flat and gorgeous. West Michigan in October is amazing. The aid stations are well-stocked and occur every 1.5 to 2 miles, which is great. The medals are super cool and so are the shirts. Free beer at the finish line, too, from a local brewery (so you know it's GOOD beer). They offer group training runs which includes race staff and the race director. They make a point to talk to as many people as they can. This truly is an amazing and incredibly well-organized event. Oh and the expo is fun, too!!

Beautiful course, great amenities!

My first time on this course. Beautiful! Most of it on paved trails through a park-like setting...through fields, around ponds and lakes, across rivers. Well-supported by residents. Great post-race refreshments. Also liked being able to stay in a warm building until just before the race instead of having to stand outside and shiver my energy away. Only concern is that part of the race (approx 6.5 miles) is on heavily-cambered road, with left foot hitting higher ground, right foot on lower ground. But a very good-looking medal and tech shirt made it worth it!. I would definitely run it again.

Perfect Race

I ran this marathon in 2012 and 2013. I've never run another marathon, but have run other long races. The support of the race organizers, volunteers, and runners is amazing! Everyone bends over backwards to help you run your best. It doesn't matter if you're at the head of the pack or limping from aid station to aid station. Everyone you encounter treats you like you're a world-class athlete and cheers you on to the finish line. It really is an honor to be involved in the race! Keep up the great work, Don Kern!

Signs at the end

This was my first marathon and I am glad that I picked this one. There was beautiful variety in the scenery, and a relatively flat course. One improvement for the end... Because I was one of the slower runners, I was not necessarily following anyone to the finish line closely enough to know the path. Unfortunately, there were no signs of where to turn in the last mile. So a couple of times, I was waiting for a person behind me to catch up to me so that we could figure out where to go together.

Enjoyed this great marathon!

I enjoy running smaller races, and this one was great. I would compare it favorably against Bayshore in Traverse City. I loved running through the forest and meadows, and around the lake. Course was flat and fast. Though there were fewer spectators, they were enthusiastic. I actually appreciate running a quieter race, without the constant screaming at bigger races. Volunteers were great. Also liked the shirt.

More than met expectations

Because of injury have to do more walking than running so appreciated the early start. And spectators were out!Only pressure to finish by a certain time was self applied! Never felt alone on the course. Limited access to the park, but where there was access, the spectators were there. Even had music at one point! Volunteers were great. Really appreciated not having to watch my step running over banana and orange peels and empty cups. Runners themselves were very encouraging. Don goes out of his way to make runners feel comfortable with his pre-race newsletter. Stayed at Holiday Inn Airport which provided shuttle service to and from the race.

Fast & Beautiful

This is the 4th time i have run this race. I have run over 40 Marathons and this one has one of the best finish lines out of all of them. Icecream, Beer, Chili.. what else can you ask for? Great shirts and great medals, the volunteers make this race what it is. The course only goes through about 5 miles of the city the rest is along the river on bike trails during peak color in the fall. The course is for the most part pretty even but there is a bit of it where the road is slanted so run in the middle or the edge.

Great course and small marathon

I like this race quite a bit. Very easy expo, parking and start area. Course is really nice - flat and pretty. Not much running through the city of Grand Rapids but I liked that. Not crowded at all. I've PRd each time I've run this one and want to run it again. Pace group are supposed to be good here but the 3:29 one was horrible. They ran too fast the entire race. Don't think pace groups should try to bank time. Don't think anyone finished with them.

Great First Time Marathon and One to Come Back to

Last year my cousin suggested I run the GR Marathon for my first ever marathon when I realized my passport was expired and I couldn't run Detroit where I live. What a great experience. This year, even after running Chicago, I wanted to be part of the 10th Anniversary at the GR Marathon so did the back-to-back. Im pretty sure Grand Rapids will now be on my annual Marathon calendar.

BEAUTIFUL COURSE, GREAT RACE!

This is a race I would do again and again! The course is mostly flat with a few rolling hills in just the right spots. Many turns keep it interesting and the fall colors in the woods are breath taking. The race director is the best in the world and takes time to greet every finisher. He truly loves his job! I can't wait for next year! PR this year by 13 minutes and another BQ in the books!

The fall colors are spectacular, the course is beautiful, and the run is peaceful. Not a huge crowd, as much of the race is paved trails, but the spectators are very supportive. Off the beaten path great event

I've done the big city, big race thing. That is fine, but this is a marathon that is like the running I would prefer to do every day. A variety of city, parks, woods, rivers, lakes, roads, bike lanes, etc. The miles tick away over a changing landscape. I truly enjoyed the journey. There is some trade off in sacrificing the big city fan support for a little quiet nature at times, but I was happy to make the trade. Yes, the long path was sloped. Just run the crown and quit crying. If you can't make this event fun (especially when the weather is perfect) it is on you.

Large race feel in a small setting.

I'm glad that I chose to run the Grand Rapids Marathon in 2013. I live in Detroit and have ran large scale races for my latest marathons. I wanted a small race that was well organized and Grand Rapids provided just that. I followed this guide's reviews before choosing this race and everything that people wrote was true. It was a beautiful course and had excellent volunteers and spectators. I would also like to mention how great it was to have the support of the YMCA. I was able to get there early and retrieve my bib and get warmed up before lining up for the starting line. The Clarion Hotel was also a great choice to stay at. They offered a special rate, 2:00 PM checkout, and a shuttle to the YMCA. Thanks again Don!

Terrific Race

I can really find no negatives about a race with excellent, entertaining prerace communication, a warm place to wait for race start, fast, flat course with some city and some country, great shirt and medal, warm showers after. Oh and the weather was perfect. I signed up expecting a decent experience for my 27th state, but Grand Rapids was so much more. Cannot recommend highly enough. Great First Marathon

I always thought my first marathon would be someplace exotic. But it wasn't, it was right in my backyard and I wouldn't change a thing. Communication from the RD leading up to the event was outstanding, if you had any questions left before the gun went off... you weren't paying attention. Aid stations were well manned and seemed to be often enough. Indian Mounds is a little tough because of the slope of the road, yet the rest of the course was very scenic so it pretty much made up for it. Bag drop off was quick and easy and the food after the congratulatory hug from Don was plentiful. My next one may be a more exotic locale but they will have a lot to live up to to match the overall experience of the GRM!

Do this marathon!!!

Put this on your to do list. Excellent organization and wonderful volunteers. 140th marathon for me so I've experienced a few races - this is a good one to do. Course is very flat but enough turns to keep it interesting. Running through the woods on the paved trails was beautiful. Enthusiastic water stops and plenty of them. Spectators rather sparse for a good share of the race with the relay points being gathering spots for many people. Finish line area well laid out - easy to get food/beverages/drop bag post race. Finisher shirt and medal didn't disappoint. Holiday Inn, JW Marriott and Courtyard Marriott downtown hotels walking distance to YMCA for expo and race start/finish.

Disappointed

This was my 20th marathon. I wanted to run a fun course to celebrate my small accomplishment. This was not it. I hated the course. It was mentally tough to see nothing but forest; it never seemed to end. Grand Rapids is a nice town but we didn't see any of it during the race. Plus, part of the trail was on a slanted and my IT Band was killing me. The volunteers were great but, they were the the only people on the course. I am not even sure the rest of the town knew the race was happening. We stayed downtown (not a race hotel. The hotel was great and we could walk to the start line. Definitely a plus. If you are looking for a small town trail race, then you may like this race. It was organized well but, I hated it and would not recommend it to anyone. I was really disappointed.

I could do this race again and again!

This was my first GRM and my 10th marathon. I was very please with every aspect of the race including: the course, the aid stations (the pretzels, bananas, and pickle juice were great!), the volunteers, the medals are beautiful, and the fans were loud and wonderful. Being able to take a shower after the race at the YMCA was fantastic! I can't say enough about how much I appreciated it. It was great having the option to start an hour earlier. For a while I even enjoyed running beside the stilt walker, who was dressed like a scare crow. That made me laugh and kept me smiling the whole race. I will definitely do this race again and recommended it to others too.

Great course! Each time I have run this course have been my 3 fastest marathons of 18. The Sub-Lancer (2:59) pace team is outstanding. They control the pace evenly mile after mile and give honest assessments of the course. Running with the Celebrity Pace Teams is fun and well managed. Can't say enough about this race. Organization, fees, YMCA, EVERYTHING about this race is great. This is no Chicago Marathon. It is just as organized without all the hassels. Just do it and you will see!

Very well organized.

I completed my 7th or 8th. GRM this year and it keeps getting better every year. Plenty of free parking at the YMCA, showers available and a Race Director that greets the 1st. place finisher and stays at the finish line greeting all the runners there after. The course is well marked, plenty of aid stations and a lot of chili and beer at the finish line. The marathon shirts are very attractive and the entry fee is lower than most. With the Celebrity Pace Team Leaders and usually perfect weather, if you want a PR; give GRM a try.

Organization was excellent. Spectators were ethusiastic. Some may complain about how few there were, but that's not what this course is about. Really well-organized, top-notch race

I was looking for a fast, well-organized marathon and this didn't disappoint. The course was almost all flat (a few small hills, but nothing that cost more than a few seconds) and very scenic, going by a small lake, the river, and over a few (flat!) bridges. The level of organization was superb and you could tell the race director really loved putting on a good race. Plenty of water stops, enough runners for it not to be lonely out there but no overcrowding, more spectators than I would have expected, and great volunteers.

Superb Race and Organization

Overall great course, experience, and organization. Having the YMCA open prior to the race proved a bonus because runners could stay inside for the pre-race rituals without worrying about the cold. Indoor restrooms were great too. Parking was plentiful. I only had to walk across the street to reach my car after running 26.2...enough said. Most importantly the GR marathon is a small race. For those of us who are tired of marathons with 30K or more this is a welcome relief. If you want a small, well organized marathon GR is a good one to run.

Great Race

Race director Marathon Don has done a great job with this race. A great Boston qualifier, this fairly flat course has a large portion of the race through a park. Very scenic with the colorful leaves, this year even featured fog early in the race through the park area which just added to the beauty. The volunteers were great, and you are personally greeted by Marathon Don at the finish. How many marathons can say that. The comments from previous posters are still all true. A great race to add to your calender.

Great all around!

This was one of the best marathons I've ran! There are so many great things about it, but I'll try to hi-light the best: -Race organization SUPERB! Don's e-mails leading up to the race were frequent & perfect. Nothing was left to question. -Course was beautiful! A few small hills, but just enough to break things up. Scenery was terrific, just enough shade, there was always something to look at. -Water stops were perfectly placed & very well stocked! Volunteers were tremendous & supportive. -Spectators - just enough spaced out just right throughout the course. It's not a Chicago or New York crowd, but for a marathon this size, they were enough to give you a boost throughout the course. -Finish - Don was at the finish line & shook the hand of every runner. He made you feel like a very welcomed guest. -Post race food, etc was plentiful & great! The only negative I would report was on the out & back from mile 16-22'ish...the road was fairly slanted & made it a little uncomfortable to run. You couldn't quite find a flat spot. BUT...this is just a slight negative :) I am planning on making this run an annual event - LOVED IT!!

I thought the course was scenic and not too crowded with runners. The section along the river was lovely. The race director is dynamite and made himself totally available during the expo and at the finish line. I got the impression that he truly appreciates every single person running in the race. Grand Rapids is a really cool city and this is a great race! The only downside: by the time the marathoners were finishing, all the half runners had finished off the free beer!

Professionally Run Event - Recommended

Pros: 1) Super flat course. Probably only two 'hills' on the course and to call them hills is an insult to real hills 2) Better than expected crowd support. I had low expectations but was impressed with the number of people that came out and cheered. 3) Awesome finishing medal 4) Pre-race facilities were nice and warm. Shuttles from hotels made it a snap. Start was right off the freeway. 5) Running through the downtown area was very cool as was Millennium Park. 6) Some of the best runner support ever. Many water stops with good volunteers. 6) Loved the food / treats at the end of the race. Cons: 1) The Out and back sections of the course were a bit dull. Would've loved to have run more in the city section. 2) The technical t-shirt is definitely serviceable, but it won't be my favorite. Needs to be jazzed up. 3) Would've been nice to know ahead of time about the pickle juice stops. They always say never try anything new on race day and pickle juice definitely would've been new. Overall, I'd highly recommend this racing for those looking for a PR. This is a professionally run race that is worthy of your attention. My hats off to the fantastic volunteers and the wonderful people of Grand Rapids for pulling off an excellent race.

Beer and chili at the finish line? Your Kidding...

What a great race, this is the 3rd time running this race.. I would put this race in the top 3 events i have participated in. Pros *Course is flat and fast *Aid stations are perfectly spaced and well staffed *The volunteers are awesome, what would you expect from a staff of marathon runners? *Beer and chili at the finish line.. are you kidding me? *Lots of other choices to eat like chocolate milk, and ice cream *celebrity pace groups *Pickle juice on the course Cons *Course is a little boring and remote *Not a lot of spectators on the course *Cheap$$ shirt.. come on Don really why did you change it from the awesome shirt? *Price..a little pricey *Did i say the shirt was really cheap this year already.. for that price really? Overall i would definitely recommend this race to every one.. having fun with the cheap shirt... But Don if you try to pass that cheap thing next year for a shirt... we will have issues

Excellent Organization...Flat Course

I really enjoyed the Grand Rapids marathon. I was particularly impressed with the novel Celebrity Pace teams. For the Celebrity Pace Teams, they identify the finish times of celebrities who have run marathons such as Al Gore, Oprah Winfrey, Lance Armstrong, etc., and pace the team to finish at that time. I echo all of the comments from the other runners particularly concerning organization, ease, convenience, flat course, food. I also would call this an excellent choice for a 50 stater.

A top notch race!

The Grand Rapids Marathon has top notch organization. All the hype about this marathon is true! It truly rocks! Pros: 1. Great Medal! 2. I have never seen so much food at the end. Bagels, chips, chocolate milk, yogurt, fruit, ice cream, chili, beer, string cheese. And the salvation army was providing hot dogs, chips, and cookies to everyone-spectators and runners for free! 3. The starting area/finish area is great. The YMCA opened their doors to runners, pre run and post run. It was super easy to park the morning of the marathon and to find my family afterwards. 4. The course was awesome. It is flat and fast! This is a PR shattering course for sure! There are some hills from about mile 7 to 10 but they are small. And 200 feet of total elevation gain over 26.2 miles is nothing. You run in the city for about the first 6 miles. Then even though you are on streets or paved greenways for the rest of the marathon it is does not feel like a city run. Kind of reminds me of running on back roads not necessarily country roads. 5. The organization is AH-MAZ-ING! It start from the top (Don) all the way to the bottom. They didn't miss anything. Don really knows what he is doing. From the monthly emails, to daily emails close to the marathon, to my name called and a hug at the end of the race. Everyone is treated like they are elites. The volunteers put the medal around my neck and when I couldn't quite figure out how to put on my space blanket, they wrapped it around me. Never once did I hear your almost done, until I was actually almost done. I heard words of encouragement and saw signs that kept me motivated when I needed to be. Cons. 1. There really wasn't that much music on the course or spectators outside the viewing area. But the spectator viewing areas were lined with cheering fans and these areas were great! But that being said, I did see my family 5 times at different points along the course, which is fantastic! Overall, Grand Rapids is an awesome race that I would highly recommend to anyone from the novice runner to the experienced marathoners. This race has world class organization! Keep up the great work, Grand Rapids!!!!!!!!!!

Great race in Michigan

I ran this race under the recommendation of other Kansas City runners. They did not disappoint! I echo all 2011 positive comments so won't repeat what has been said. I would like to give a two thumbs up to the Clarion hotel. They were fantastic in their hospitality for runners. Free shuttle to and from the airport and the race. And, a 3:00 pm check out time! I don't think I've ever been given that option. They were very kind and accommodating!!

Three thumbs up

Grand Rapids put on a model race, one that should be emulated by others. In addition to the stellar organization and nice course, the relatively small size (1,600 marathoners and 1,700 half-marathoners) was just right for an enjoyable running experience. The course was mostly flat with very gentle grades (virtually unnoticeable). The one alleged hill was gentle and perhaps 150-200 yards long. The course was mostly run through wooded areas (parks and parkways), quite pleasant, but not particularly scenic. Each mile was prominently marked with a large flag. These couldn't be missed. Packet pick-up was a breeze (I went Saturday morning) and was open on race morning. There was ample parking within a block or two of the start/finish line. This was important because I couldn't find a hotel room within walking distance of the start/finish, even though I started looking 4 months prior to the race. The YMCA, a block from the start/finish line, was open race morning to give runners shelter from inclement weather. This was much appreciated. The race director and staff worked their magic on race day: the light rain stopped when the gun went off and they managed to completely corral the 20-30 mph winds that we experienced on Friday and Saturday. Overcast skies and high-40s and mid 50s temps also made for good running. Plenty of enthusiastic fans and clever signs along the course, even in the park areas that weren't center city or residential; i.e., people had to travel to get there. Plentiful volunteers who were uniformly smiling and encouraging. Half marathoners started with the marathoners and rejoined them at about mile 22.5. This did not create any crowding at my pace (8:20/mile). A wide and plentiful variety of food and drink was available at the finish, the usual bananas and water, but also apples, cookies, bread, chips, Gogurt, custard, ice cream, and chocolate milk. The email newsletter provided useful, late-breaking information, rather than just cutting and pasting from the website. Why can't all races do this? The race packets were classy; the bag was a nice cloth mini-backpack carryall that could be used as a gear bag on race day. Also included was a pair of technical socks. Gear drop off took 10 seconds and pick-up took 1 minute. Finishing time and places were posted at the race site and updated about every 30 minutes. This allowed runners to see how they did and whether they should hang around to pick up their award on-site. Grand Rapids was a nice destination for a fall marathon; good eating at reasonable prices, a fun museum across from the YMCA expo site (with a spooky Halloween light and music show in the planetarium) as a diversion, and it was easy to get around. The race staff put in a lot of hard work to make the race successful and it showed. Most importantly, everyone, both associated with race and not, was very friendly and helpful; even the TSA screener at the airport who told me that he liked my Flying Pig marathon jacket.

Good marathon with first-class organization

This is my second time running the GR marathon. It is run by runners and you can tell as things just run smoothly and without any fuss. The post-run refreshments are very generous, escpecially for a smaller race. The course is flat, but has two little turnarounds that detract from the appeal. The finisher's shirt previously was a nice long-sleeve Brooks wicking shirt. This year it was replaced by a cheaper short-sleeve model from some off brand. It's a pretty cruddy shirt which is too bad, as I wear last year's model all the time. Still despite the course quirks and cut-rate shirt it is a very well-run race and worth doing if you are looking for a fall marathon in Michigan.

nice marathon, nice weather, nice race director

This was my 5th marathon overall and all in the past year, and my 1st GR marathon. I picked this one because I didn't want the large crowds like Chicago and I wanted a flat fast course in a cool time of year. This race was also in the top 25 marathons in the Midwest. I had my doubts about the weather, but the rain quit just in time to make the weather perfect. I enjoyed the course but could do without the turnaround #2 in the woods....when I see a turnaround it usually means I'm heading back to the finish. Also, I recall reading about the incline on the paved bike path, but realized yes it was a pain to run on, literally. A little while would be fine, but the course spends a lot of time in the woods. It was difficult running on the incline, I either wanted to run in the middle or to far right side. Overall, I think I may do this one again. I didn't BQ, but did get my 2nd fastest time yet and enjoyed getting emails from the race director (and I think a hug from him at the finish - not sure it was him or not. lol), hearing them announce my name over the speaker and the nice lady at the finish who helped me get a plastic blanket.

Gorgeous course with excellent organization!

I couldn't be happier I chose the Grand Rapids Marathon for my first marathon. The weekly, then daily newsletters leading up to race day provided all the information I needed. Scenery along the course was beautiful and the spectators were wonderfully encouraging. My husband was able to 'chase' me along the course and cheer for me at several spectator sites. Aid stations were abundant with Gatorade and water as were the medical stations. The amount and variety of snacks and refreshments at the end were wonderful. This was such an excellent event that was clearly very well organized. I'll happily run it year after year.

Great first marathon

Amazing event! Course was flat; race very well organized; nice people; great weather; and they had water, GU, Gatorade - you name it. Stick with a pace group and enjoy the ride. The partial out-and-back helps keep spirits high as you interact with other runners. I'd sign up again!

For a first-timer, this was awesome! The race director, Don, sends out newsletters leading up to the race. I would read them at my desk at work and literally tear up knowing what I was about to take on. The organization, course, and fans were top-notch. Where else can you get pickle juice on the course and beer and chilli afterwards?!?!? I plan to do it again next year... and qualify for Boston 2012!

Relayer Turned Marathoner 2011!

Well, I did not run the full marathon, and when I'm wearing my shirt and people ask me about it, I am sure to clarify that. But, I did do the 7.3-mile leg of the relay and felt so much inspiration from the runners that I want to do my first full next year in Grand Rapids. Everything about this race is great - the staff, course, spectators, goody bag, post-race snacks, music, everything! I'm so excited!! And I can't wait to get a handshake from Don!

This is a great marathon. Well supported.

This is just a great marathon. I have done it twice and it is just a postive experience. The course is fast and flat. It is also a beautiful setting for a race. The organization is really top-notch. It is a marathon for all skill levels and all ages. If you have not done a marathon yet, this is the best for a "first" marathon. The race director is involved in the race from top to bottom. The expo is great and all of the details are handled. The aid stations are well stock and have many volunteers who are actually interested in you and what you are doing. Both of my daughter and I PR'd the last time we did the race. You won't have a bad experience at this marathon. Half is great too.

Great, fast marathon

I ran the 1/2 in 2009 and the full this year. After 2009, I have told everyone who is looking for a course on which to BQ, "Grand Rapids is your race." I knocked over 22 minutes off of my previous PR. The marathon director, Don Kern, is a class act, as is his entire support staff.

Best Marathon Experience Ever!

This is my 6th marathon, and by far the best - and not just because I got a PR! Very organized, beautiful course. Mostly flat, with very manageable hills. Best volunteers anywhere. Cool swag. Very laid back, yet still competitive. Everyone was treated like the race was just for them - from the Boston Qualifiers to the 1st-timers. I felt very pampered. Not a lot of spectators, but beautiful scenery. I just can't say enough good things about it!

Best all-around marathon out there!

The packet pickup and expo were fast and easy. Race day packet pickup and free nearby parking are definite pluses. Free access to the huge and beautiful YMCA before and after the race was a great benefit. Ample pace groups, aid stations, and volunteers. Crowd support was minimal in certain areas, but that is expected. Course was well marked, and never once did you have to worry about cars hitting you. Nice finisher's medal, great selection of post-race food, and thanks to New Holland Brewing Company for free beer after the race. Race Director Don Kern does an excellent job year after year of putting on this race.

Grand Rapids throws a great race

I have run 2 other marathons and have wanted to run the Metro because I have always been a fan of the Old Kent 25K (ran it 12 times) and I wanted to compare. Well I have concluded that its the people of Grand Rapids that make great races. I almost dropped out the week before due to knee problems but the race director's emails kept me going; he did a fantastic job. The course was great - better than I expected. The volunteers were inspiring and the spectators were awesome. I ran a new PR despite my knee problems and I'm still flying high. Count on this 60-year-old being back next year! THANKS, Mr. Kern!

Thanks, Don and awesome volunteers!

I had a great time running the Grand Rapids marathon! Pros: 1. Nice medal! 2. Nice tech shirt. 3. Great leadership by Director Don! I loved all of the newsletters each month for the past year! 4. Grand Rapids is really pretty. Also, the Holiday Inn was really close to the start of the race. Perfect location: 3-5 minute walk. 5. Volunteers on the course are really positive and excited to do anything for you. One volunteer ran with me while explaining the last .8 of the course. I was hurting and looking for the end. It was great to get his energy for my finish. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!! 6. Nice food at the end! Cons. 1. I liked the course and it is flat and can be fast. However, the trail run from mile 15 or so to 22 (an out-and-back) was tough for me to run. I have a shin splint issue and the path is slanted on both sides. I wanted to run close to the middle but there are speed bumps/indentations in the path that are probably meant for bike riders. Anyway, I couldn't wait to get off that part of the course even if it was really shaded, gorgeous fall leaf colors, etc. 3. Give all marathon finishers the bigger medal that is given out for Team Relay top finishers and age group winners. That medal is awesome!!!!!!! (Yes, I know, it isn't about the medal, but they are a nice reminder of a job well done.) Keep up the great work, Grand Rapids!!!!!!!!!!

Good race, I'd do it again, but...

This was my 9th marathon and my 4th state in my quest for 50/50. Weather was terrific. The YMCA is a GREAT place to host this event and for the most part it was well run and well organized. Parking was easy (there are plenty of places), and hotel space was copious (we stayed at the Radisson on Ann St. 2 miles away and it was an easy commute down Turner Ave. to get to the parking lot at 6 a.m. - and a nice hotel too). The course is the flattest I've run. No "real" hills to speak of at all. Aid stations every 1.5-2 miles were well staffed and stocked. Plenty of fans on the course and probably the best running weather I've had for a race. Nice fall colors through miles 10-22. Negatives (and they are just minor gripes; like my title suggests, I'd do this race again if I return to MI): The course takes you through a paved trail in a park and around a lake... you're there for 13 miles. The scenery doesn't change; it's nice, fall colors on a paved, tree-lined path, but it just never changes and got boring really fast. I thought the course should have weaved through downtown a little more and they could utilize the bridges a little better (take it up to Ann St. and cross some of the other bridges other than just the one on Leonard). Post-race "party" kind of stinks. Food was kind typical (fruit, bagels, chips, cookies) but they advertised beer at the end (and people encouraged it throughout the course as well) and when I got to the end... "Oh, we're out of beer. Sorry." If you are going to advertise that, you had better damn well have it. Get a beer sponsor! No excuse for that. Other positives: expo was small but nice. RACE POSTER!!! Way to go - it's great! I love them and think every race should have them. Goody bag was well stocked, the YMCA is an incredible facility (best YMCA I've ever been in), the start and finish are flawless and easy to maneuver, and GR is a great, clean, safe town to visit. I definitely recommend this race to others. Fast and flat course should help you Boston qualify or set a PR (I ran my 2nd fastest time ever). - DW

At mile 23 the GR skyline looms like Emerald City

The best part about the course is you come out of the woods around mile 23 into an open field and the GR skyline looms in the distance like Emerald City in the Land of Oz. Actually there are a lot of great things about it starting with the fact that it is run by people who love marathoning. Everything is exceptionally well organized. Spectator participation has greatly improved as the race has grown. I have run the full 3 times and the half once, and each time it has improved. It was also a beautiful day, which helps.

After running marathons in other states, I quickly found out how lucky we are to have one of the best organized races here in Grand Rapids. We are truly spoiled to have such a great marathon! Excellent, flat, fast marathon

This is an extremely well-organized, personable, small marathon. If you are looking for a PR, this is your race. I wasn't expecting to run a PR after running a marathon 2 weeks earlier, but I had an unreal day and took a couple of minutes off my best. It's really a beautiful course that covers a lot of different terrain from urban city streets to country roads, fields, parks, woods, and along the river. It keeps things interesting and mentally made it easy to break the course down into smaller chunks. There are a few small hills, but nothing devastating. The expo is pretty good for a small race. If you need a lot of crowd support, this isn't your race. Even in locations where there were lots of people, spectators were pretty quiet and seemed to be only looking for their own runners. Really great finisher's medal and long-sleeved Brooks technical shirt. Overall a fantastic race. Thanks to Don and the entire Grand Rapids crew for a great weekend.

Wonderful Race!

This is my second marathon, and the second time I've run GR. I considered running Detroit this year, but my experience was just so positive that it was difficult to pass up the opportunity to run this one again. The shirts are awesome, the food is wonderful (beer and chili, etc.), the fans are enthusiastic, and the course is pretty. The pace teams are great and even the e-mail support leading up to, and following, the race are fantastic. They say your name when you finish, you get a sweet medal, and Don Kern shakes your hand. I wept tears of joy my first time, and this time wasn't any different. It is an experience like no other, and from what I can see of others' thoughts, I'm not alone in my opinion. I highly recommend this race.

Boston-bound, thanks to this race.

Yes, because of running with the sub-four-hour pace group, I am now signed up for Boston. The pace group was my best help in this race, as there are no time clocks along the course. I only had to check my watch the first few miles to find that the pacers kept an exact nine-minute-per-mile pace the entire race. The entire race experience was first-class. The Amway Grand Hotel was exceptional, located on the course and allowed for late checkout. The town is a nice slice of America - a beautiful, friendly place to run an autumn race. The positive atmosphere, great weather, and terrific, flat course all helped me run faster and stronger than I ever have.

Fast, Flat, Boston qualifier

This is the first time I have run this marathon. It is flat, fast and a good one to run for a Boston qualifying time. Not a lot of spectators once you get out of town, but it was peak color season and running along the river was beautiful. Would be nice to have more spectators along the last four miles - when you are hurting and want to die! Overall I think it a good race... and I qualified for Boston! Don (race director) was at the finish line shaking hands with everyone who crossed. That means a lot!

Outstanding on all points - don't change it!

This was my second marathon. My first was Grand Rapids 2008, as it was a convenient drive from Lansing and the reviews were positive. My other drivable choice was Detroit, and I wasn't disappointed with GR. The best thing for 2009 was the removal of the industrial park loop from 2008's course, which was the part I disliked. There is still a boring one-to-two-mile out-and-back around miles 20-21; it would be better to add more of the downtown like they did with the new five-mile section to start the race. They might also consider going through downtown the last miles to get larger crowds, like the 5/3 River Bank Run that has huge crowds the last couple miles. The finish area is the best, hands down, and I was so happy taking 18 minutes off of my time that I couldn't say no to a hug from Don Kern. The whole experience was really inspirational and my family and kids were able to easily locate me and share in the post race fun. The volunteers even said it was OK for my kids to have an ice cream!

Great marathon, highly recommended.

This is an awesome race. The course starts with a four-mile, spectator-friendly loop through downtown Grand Rapids, with the rest winding up and down along the Grand River. Seeing the mist rising over the water was a beautiful distraction. Great pace teams to help you get to the chili and beer at the finish. It was a wonderful experience from sign-up to finish line. I'll be back next year!

Well organized; improved-but-not-great course

This is second time running Grand Rapids. Everything about this race is friendly and well organized. The shirts are always great and the volunteers and organizers are always top-notch. I'm surprised, though, about the raves about the course. For people who run the 5/3 each year, the course is largely repetitive with not a lot of stimulation along the way. Much of the course is on bike trails and a roads that seems to be graded more for water run off than level running. The first time I ran GR, I said I wouldn't run it again until they brought more of the city into the course. They did that this year, which I appreciated; but I would love to see this be mostly in the city. I know it would be more expensive, but I also think they would get more runners and the sponsors would get more exposure. Just my two cents.

Pleasantly surprised by everything! Great race!

I have run 3 marathons before Grand Rapids and all were in Chicago. I was a little wary at first when I heard the crowds would be smaller. Yes, there weren't as many people, so if you want that, then stick to Chicago, but the support was awesome. I loved the out-and-back spots because when you saw your loved one, you knew you were going to get to see them again on the way past. I loved Chicago, but I feel Grand Rapids is a mini-Chicago. Same awesome support, only smaller. Same great organization, only smaller. My fiance was helped out a lot by the staff at our hotel on where to go for certain great viewing spots. Also they allowed late checkout in the afternoon on race day. Days Inn, soon to be Holiday Inn on Pearl St. I would definitely stay at the same hotel, which is only a block away from the start. I also took my iPod, thinking I would need it because of lack of crowds. Never turned it on. There were enough people to run with and converse with if need be. I liked the fact that the full finish was one block over from the half. Oh, last but not least, I decided not to take my orange slices along and instead stick to GU. I laughed when they offered them on the course. And the food spread after... WOW! Microbrew beer, Wendy's chili, Culver's ice cream, Go-gurt, mozzarella cheese sticks, not to mention the usual after-marathon fare. Not sure I was really into the Oreo cookies and pretzels offered on the race course, though. The only thing I could see that needed to be changed was the two times we had an out-and-back turnaround. One turnaround was gradual, but the other, late in the race, was pretty sharp. Not something your legs want to do late in the race. I would do this one again!

great course and support

I'll be back for this one. Nice, flat and scenic course; excellent support; lots of GU and everything you would need; and an indoor area to wait in for the race start (with showers after); but what makes this race special is the race director. Personal touches, dedication to runners, pre-race emails and he's waiting as you finish, to shake your hand or give you a hug. This marathon is for the runners, staffed with experienced runners, and it has a great party afterward with micro-brewed beer and chili, plus all of the standard post-race stuff.

Excellent course, very well organized!!!!

This is the third GR Marathon I have done. And every time I have NOT been disappointed. The race has been SO well done, with the course, the first aid stations, and the spectators - not to mention the after-race food! I enjoy this marathon very much and I will continue running this for as long as it exists. If anyone has never run a marathon in GR, they have never run a marathon!!! Truly an enjoyable experience.

Top marks

Very fast and scenic course. Excellent three-hour pace group. Friendliest expo. Couldn't really ask for more. Such a refreshing change from the mega-marathons I normally run in the fall.

This is a race worth traveling to!

It is clear that the Grand Rapids Marathon is put on by runners who care about putting on a great race. It's a medium-sized race with a lot of personal attention. It is this focus on the details that made this race an enjoyable experience for me. The energy and encouragement of the volunteers at the water stops was fabulous and the spectators along the way were wonderful. The high-energy music made a difference, especially at the last few water stops near the end of the race. To be sure, much of this marathon is run away from the city and away from large crowds. The landscape is "interesting," a combination of rural, urban, and industrial. The out-and-back portion of the race gave me a sense of perspective of where I stood in the flow of runners . Overall, Grand Rapids is a fun, well-done marathon with a slightly off-beat feel to it. It is definitely worth traveling to. Oh yeah, I ran a PR too. That always helps.

Highly Recommended!!

I just ran this one for the second time (2009) and was again very impressed and very happy that I chose it over Chicago (although I live in the Chicagoland). This is a well-organized, well-communicated, and well-executed marathon for first-timers as well as veterans. As they say, this really is a marathon organized by runners for runners. Some perks of this marathon are: beautiful, scenic course (quite flat and paved); big enough for good energy and a good number of pacers, but small enough for short distance to the bathroom and parking; a short wait before the race; it's easy to find your family cheering you on and after the race; a nice, hot post-race shower available at the Y; first GU at Mile 8 and aid/food stations throughout (at least every 2 miles); great food after the race (warm chili, hot dogs, ice cream and beer on top of usual post-race foods like bananas, apples, bread, etc.); and great e-mails from the director who personally greets everyone at the finish line. This is a highly recommended marathon if you're trying to choose one for next year.

My favorite race so far

What more is there to say? This was my first of what is now four marathons, and hands down, I would have to say that this is the best organized of the bunch. Everything from the positive e-mails to the on-course support says, "Runner-friendly." If you are looking for a first-time race or an alternative to the big events on the fall schedule, this is the race for you.

The race was well organized.

The race was well organized. The volunteers were great. The t-shirt and socks were great! The finishing medals along with the soft ribbon were a nice touch. However, for a race that size, the overall awards were rather chintzy. They look like dollar store glass frames with the logo engraved. Come on, Don, those runners deserve better for their effort and high entry fee.

Excellent choice for a PR

The 2009 version of this race was an excellent effort on the part of many volunteers. Food and drink were abundant during the entire marathon. The course was beautiful as well as flat. The medals and food at the end were without equal - not to mention the many breweries in the city. For me, the most important bonu was the three-minute walk from the hotel to the marathon and back.

One of the nicest half courses I've ever run!

This was my 19th half-marathon and possibly the best I've ever run in terms of organization and the course itself. Starting weeks before, the RD contacted registered runners with e-mails about the details of race day. The information was great and helped me feel really "pumped" for the event. Race day was superb - kit pick-up was executed without a hitch. Waiting in the YMCA to start was wonderful and warm (it was very cool on Sunday) and the race started right on time. The course is gorgeous, winding its way first around city streets and then a fabulous string of miles on a paved trail - for the first time in a race, I actually took in the beauty of the setting because it was hard to ignore. The aid stations were very organized and the volunteers were top-notch. Finishing at the Y, receiving a beauty of a medal and having a hot shower was the cherry on top of a great day. What a wonderful race - I hope to tell as many of my running buddies about it as possible.

This race gets better and better.

The course was changed to include downtown, and it was a big improvement over the trip past the water treatment plant. My three fastest times were achieved in Grand Rapids because you can run here, not just shuffle along like in larger races. Don gives the race a personal touch in everything about this race.

Grand Rapids does it right!

What a great day in Grand Rapids. The race director, the staff, and all volunteers are to be thanked and congratulated. You guys made it possible for all of us to have fun. I will always treasure my medal and time well spent. Everyone is treated as a winner, and the race director greets all runners at the finish. Hugs, sweat and smiles - that's the way to finish. Number 101 for me, and I highly recommend this event.

A people's race

I ran in GR this year. I participated in the half-marathon. The race committee offers an early start for the "velocity challenged" penguin runners. A great offering. Usually, I am one of the last runners to finish a marathon, but running the half, and having the opportunity to start early I was able to watch the marathoners finish. Rest assured, each one was greeted by the race director, and each one was treated like royalty. There were no big money names or times at this race. Truly, more than any race I have participated in... this was a "people's" race.

A Great Race

This is a great race for anyone looking for a fall marathon. Pros include: - It was well organized. All of the necessities were covered. There were also some nice extras at the water stops (e.g. GU, oranges, gummy bears, and in one case, pickle juice). - The director and race crew/volunteers were friendly, enthusiastic, and helpful. They're among the best I've seen at any race I've run. - This is a PR or Boston qualifying course. It's mostly flat and the second half is fairly scenic. - The race field is small, but not too small (under 2,000 for the full marathon). It's easy to get on pace and to find someone to run with. - Grand Rapids has a compact downtown with hotels, restaurants, museums, and the expo/race all within a short walk. No real cons, but some potential drawbacks: - This is a small race with a small expo and few spectators. Bring what you need with you. Spectators are limited by logistics/parking to a few areas of the course. - There are two out-and-back sections on the course, one fairly long. - The pace teams are intentionally a bit odd. I didn't use them because my target fell between the 3:29:24 pace team and the 3:44:52 pace team. They won't be much help if you're looking for help with a Boston qualifying pace. - The pre-race pasta dinner was nice, but poorly attended. The addition of a speaker might help draw a bigger crowd.

Most user-friendly marathon; BEAUTIFUL course

Don puts together the best marathon in the country (I'm putting it up against any of the majors). It's incredibly easy to pick up your packet, even on race morning. Stay warm inside until just before the start and get a hot shower after at the YMCA. The star of the race is the course: beautiful, winding bike paths make up most of the experience, which in the fall are a lot of fun to see. Spectators are sparse, but enthusiastic. If you need millions to cheer you to the finish, this isn't for you, but if you like a crowd that really appreciates what runners are going through, they are a great group. Most important are Don and the team he has assembled. I have never felt so personally taken care of as I do at this race. It's a chance for all of the mid-pack runners to know what starting in the elite corral must feel like. First-class set-up and personal greetings from the race director at the finish line. I'm afraid that one day this race will be so big that it won't be able to provide all of the personal touches anymore. But make sure you make this part of your plan for 2010. You will not be disappointed.

Great small marathon

I have done 40 marathons, from Chicago to Boston, and I would rate this as one of the best. Don Kern does a fantastic job as director. It was well organized and and accommodating. We stayed downtown, a four-block walk from the start. The Amway Grand is a beautiful hotel. The course was scenic. Fans were great. Water stops were well manned, and the three GU stops were terrific. My only suggestion would be to place the first four mile markers higher. I missed them and heard other runners say the same. Great job and I hope to come back!

it just keeps getting better...

Where else would a runner rather be on a crisp mid-October autumn morning than at Mr. Kern's extravaganza? Don and his hard-working crew listen to runners and keep making positive changes that add quality to this marathon. That's the difference of the GRM: "By runners, for runners" would be a good motto. Thanks for the emails leading up to the race, the well stocked aid stations, the reduced congestion on the course this year, and the new city loop. Even the medal was cooler this year! Consider Don's life membership program if you live anywhere near GR. The 2009 GRM jacket is the sharpest article in my wardrobe. Congratulations on this fine event.

Excellent Race

This was my second time running this race; the last time was five years ago, as I ran Chicago the last four years. It has only improved! The course is great, the volunteers fantastic, and the race itself is very well run. There seemed to be more spectators as well. There are a few spots where there are no spectators, but usually within two to three miles you have a water station or a viewing area. This would be a great race for anyone looking to run a smaller race (1,555 marathon finishers).

For me, a great first-marathon experience.

I liked this race! The staff were very friendly and well organized. The aid stations were well supplied. The course was scenic for the most part, although a bit narrow at one point. Very spectator friendly! Although there aren't huge crowds of spectators, those present do a good job of cheering and are full of encouragement (whether they know you or not). All in all, a good experience. :)

Great marathon for your first; walkers are welcome

I am a walker and this was my first marathon. I could not have picked a better one for my first. The sponsors and the race director (Don Kern) were welcoming and very supportive. The support along the route was more than you could ask for. There are even people along the last several miles of the route that are there just to make sure you are okay and to see if you need help or support finishing. The race director waits for everyone to finish and is there at the end to welcome the finishers. If you are considering doing a marathon and you are a walker, you are treated just like the elite runners. It is a great event and my daughter (she is a runner) and I will be there again next year (2009). Very rewarding and worth the effort. The expo is also great and well attended.

Great job on the weather!

This was my 13th marathon and 12th state. I am SO glad we chose Grand Rapids for Michigan. The weather was perfect. The people are fantastic. The course was ideal. The pace groups were hilarious. I tried to stay with P Diddy but I faded and finished after Oprah. I felt great, though, the entire 26.2 miles. Don greeted me at the finish. I swooned and ended up in the med tent. After a brief stay there, all was well. Everything about this race is top-notch. The post-race beer was very good. Having access to a shower so quickly was a godsend. Thanks to Don Kern and all of you friendly Michiganers!

Great first marathon race!

This was my first marathon ever. What an amazing experience! I could not have asked for a better first marathon experience! The aid stations were tremendous, the course was great, and the weather was perfect. The crowds were not as plentiful as I would have expected but pretty good nonetheless (tons better than Traverse City Bayshore). I love the fact that Don takes the time to shake everyone's hand. The medal and socks were an added bonus! I am already planning on running it again in 2009. I realize it's the same weekend as Detroit, but I'd much rather run a smaller race than get lost in a mob.

Try this one; you will appreciate it.

Thanks again Don for your dedication and time to give runners a really fine marathon experience. I ran this race unexpectedly, knowing nothing about it (2007) and was amazed about the scenic course, the course support (which was much better than at any race I've ever entered), easy check in, nice expo, enthusiastic volunteers who were runners, and great post-race food and refreshments. Chili and micro-brewed beer plus healthy foods at the finish line - a runner's choice. Lots of GU on route and many times including early and late miles too. The same positive amenities and support were around for 2008. You even get emails from the race director both to all runners and personal ones if you have a question or need some advice. This year the course was the same as last year and I see no reason to change it. People complain about congestion on the out-and-back trails, but it's not that bad. Also, a complaint is foul-smelling air, which again is not that bad and only lasts for a minute or two. Try the Myrtle Beach Marathon - running miles on a road with traffic and runners in a lane separated with traffic cones, breathing in car exhaust - for a comparison. My thought: people are looking for something negative. I do agree those wood posts on the trail should be marked in orange and padded. I'm sure Don will take care of that next year. Chalk markings of encouragement and verbal encouragement from volunteers made up for the lack of spectators on most of the course. The spectators cannot get to points on the bike path, but the beautiful fall foliage and views of the river are what you get instead. This is a great race. I'll be back.

I. LOVE. THIS. RACE. (half-marathon)

Last year I ran Grand Rapids (half-marathon) and kicked my previous PR's butt in a major way. It was a great race for me, but it was also just a great race. I left with nothing but positive vibes. Fast forward to this August. I had done barely any training or racing for the summer due to limited financial resources. I was browsing the brochure racks at the local Fleet Feet and spotted the 2008 race brochure. An election theme for their marketing campaign. As a rabid fan of all things political, how could I NOT run this race? So I signed up (again for the half-marathon). And I showed up on race day not knowing what to expect. In truth, I had a very painful race. Everything from the waist down was killing me starting around Mile 2. But you know what? THE RACE WAS AWESOME. Beautiful weather (nice job, Don!), awesome course, well-stocked aid stations, amazingly supportive volunteers, AWESOME food at the finish line, gorgeous medals, and Don! No other race I've done has a race director who sends out humor and inspiration every week. So even though it was painful, I finished with a huge smile on my face and nothing but positive things to say about the entire race experience. And I CANNOT WAIT for 2009!

Outstanding race for a PR

I flew in from FL just for this race and a PR/BQ. I wanted a flat course with predictable, cool weather. I wasn't disappointed on any of these accounts. I was able to BQ and had a 12-minute PR. The race was very organized and running predominantly on secluded roads, and paved park trails was great, although it did limit the crowd support. Hydration stops were great and well stocked. Nice variety of flavors of Gatorade at each stop (not just lemon/lime all day, like some races). Amazingly, volunteers went out on at least a portion of the course and picked up the discarded laundry from the cold morning start and had it back at the bag drop off at the end of the race, folded and ready for pick-up for anyone to claim. You don't get this kind of service in the big races. Only drawback/caution was the wooded poles along the route in the middle of the paths from about mile 12-16. These should be identified with tall, orange (preferably padded) pylons or wrapping to mitigate the danger. Otherwise, a fantastic experience that I would reconsider in a heartbeat.

Wonderful 1st Marathon Experience!

Being that I am a first-time marathon runner, I was EXTREMELY nervous leading up to race day. However, my fears were put to rest with Don's weekly emails. Those are by far what motivated me the most to get up on race day. As for the course, it was gorgeous. I loved running through the trails, especially in such perfect running weather; I was able to focus on the amazing fall colors rather than the throbbing pain in my knees. I did notice things got a little tight in some areas on the trails though. We just recently moved back to the Grand Rapids area after living in a hilly area in Pennsylvania, so for me, I didn't even notice any elevation. The course seemed very flat. The crowds were spread out here and there, and they were always excited to see us. It didn't really bother me that they weren't everywhere; I realized I don't love seeing hundreds of people watching me, thinking,"Wow, she looks like she's hit her wall." But I do have to say that I really liked the spectator with the sign that read, "Your feet hurt because you are kicking so much @##!" (You can probably fill in the blank.) That sign gave me a much needed laugh in the midst of my wall. The aid stations were great! I think the looks and smell of the pickle juice towards the end almost made me puke, but I realize some people need certain things while they're running. For those of you who like GU, there is no shortage at this race! I don't care for it, but I know it is the lifeblood of a lot of avid runners. Just as a side note - my favorite volunteer (of the many great volunteers) was the guy handing out gummy bears somewhere around mile 6; they were exactly what I needed. The race medals are lovely and I am thrilled to have been a part of such a beautiful day in Grand Rapids. For those of you who are thinking about making this your first marathon, I would really encourage you to pick Grand Rapids - it's really a first-class event. PS. To the guy I ran with from the early mile 6 all the way to the finish line, I am so sorry that I didn't even ask you your name! You are the reason I made it through miles 15-26. My end time was 4:12, but better than the 4:30 I was expecting. So thank you to whoever you are!

Pretty Hard To Beat This One

The fact that this race is not hurt by scheduling it on the same day as the Detroit Marathon and another very good Midwestern marathon in Des Moines says a lot about it. I have talked to many runners who recommended this race, and it lived up to all of my expectations. The organization, packet pick-up, medal, t-shirt, food at the end, "extras" at the aid stations, and even the course photographer are all excellent. The aid stations were where they needed to be and were well-staffed with very nice people. Considering that Grand Rapids doesn't have as many people as Chicago, I was very impressed not only with how many spectators were out on the course, but with how vocal and enthusiastic they were about cheering on the runners. The two unique aspects of this marathon are the race director, Don Kern, and the course itself. I have not met Don personally, but I believe that he may be THE running enthusiast in the Midwest. I enjoy the blog, the email subscription that comes with registration, and I see a guy willing to tweak the system and try new stuff. For example, you can buy a "lifetime membership" to this marathon, and I think I remember something being set up so that an injured runner can defer his registration to the following year. The heart and soul of this race is the course, which winds for many miles through the woods where leaves fall on you and you don't cross any streets at all. There are a couple of "out and back" sections where you really have to stay on your toes as runners are going both ways, but, as you can see from all the comments about people BQing and PRing, those places will not seriously slow you down. I started literally at the back of the pack because I had run Chicago the previous week and I wanted to take it easy, and I was able to comfortably move up to about mid-pack by the end of the race. There are a couple of dark wood posts, which maybe could be wrapped with some kind of foam or at least a bright color, and there is a place coming out of Millenium Park where a narrow sidewalk runs between two boulders that seem to jump out at you. But these are not a big deal; they are just little tweaks that might help runners who are not watching where they are going. Of course, watching where we are going is a good idea, too. Keep up the good work, Don!!!

Great race - fast course

I am an ex-high school long-distance runner who weighed 129 pounds my senior year in high school who now weighs 172. I've been running again the last 11 months with hopes of breaking 4 hours again for the first time in 12 years. I ran a few marathons in June this year and the closest I came was a 4.12. Strangely, I ran the Air Force Marathon in Ohio just last month and ran one of my slowest times, even though that was a well organized and inspirational race - I think the weather bogged me down a lot (it reached 80 by the time I finished). So, fast forward to Grand Rapids. This was my last planned marathon for the year and my last chance to break 4 by the end of the year, which was my initial goal. The weather was perfect (about 40 at the start and upper 50's by the time I finished). There were clear skies, which isn't necessarily what you want during a long race like the marathon due to risk of sunburn or having the sun beating down on you and causing other physiological problems, BUT, the race was mostly run through tree shaded areas which was absolutely perfect to go along with the cold temps. Even the exposed first 2.5 to 3 miles were not a problem because the sun was still low on the horizon. I didn't know how I would do at this race because I've run enough races to know that I can't always trust how my body feels at the beginning of a race and how that will carry throughout a race. By mile 7 I felt decent and was able to maintain an 8-minute-per-mile pace through mile 12. A "lucky leaf" also literally fell into my arms as I was running around mile 7, which I ran with until I handed it off to my girlfriend at the finish line. By mile 15, I was still feeling pretty decent and thought I had a good chance to break 4 hours. By mile 17 I KNEW I would as I was only fatiguing at a slow rate as opposed to "conking out" like I've done in previous marathons. I was so happy by mile 19 that I knew I just had to cruise to the finish to break 4 and ended up running my 2nd fastest time ever - in 3 hours 55 minutes - and breaking 4 for the first time in 12 years!!! Was it the "lucky leaf" that fell into my arm from the various leaves being gently blown off the trees at around mile 7? Was it due diligence in keeping up with my running, even after disappointments in earlier marathons this year? Was it the perfect weather conditions? Probably all of the above. In short, thanks Don for a well organized race on a relatively flat, serene course! The odor that was written about in other posts is not a major issue. I only noticed it at most for 2 minutes in one area and 1 minute in another. However, that still does nothing to diminish the mostly serene nature of the course. The only drawback would be some of the tight congestion in some of the restricted turnarounds and "curves" of the course that happened during the first 6 to 6.5 miles. I read how most people got a handshake or hug from Don at the finish - I didn't and my feelings are hurt now (laugh). I've run mega races like Chicago and big races like Houston and San Francisco, and I can vouch for Grand Rapids as being a top-notch race. I heard that the course might change next year, but I hope it doesn't as I really enjoyed the peaceful bike path portion of the race and I plan on running it next year. I don't care much for spectators but the ones that were there were helpful if you are the type who needs cheering on. An important factor of this race is the number of aid stations and amount of various "energy stuff" - such as gel and candy - that were available on the course. I've never been in a race that had so much plentiful GU. If you are considering a Midwest, late-year race, this is the one to run!!

Outstanding organization and BQ qualifier course!

Really enjoyed this almost flat course and solidly organized race! Other than the normally hectic finishing chute, shouldn't the snow-fence reach to Pearl St.? This race is my top Midwest race, even compared to Milwaukee, Cincinnati, Duluth and St. Louis!

AWESOME RACE! Thanks to Don and all!

This was a great experience for my first marathon. Very well organized. Nice expo. Cool stuff in the race packet (technical shirt, socks). Cool theme (Vote Rundependent, etc.). Really nice finisher medal (good for impressing family and friends). Most of the course was very scenic, with plenty of fall colors to see. Mostly flat. One section through an industrial park, but I heard that section will be eliminated next year in lieu of more Downtown Grand Rapids streets. The crowd was supportive, although sparse at times. If the course does run through more of downtown, I bet we'll see a larger crowd. I look forward to running this one again next year!

I love this race!

This was my second trip to Grand Rapids and I will definitely be back! The race is very well organized, the volunteers are amazing, the scenery is beautiful and the race has a great overall feel to it. Getting a handshake from Race Director Don Kern at the finish is the icing on the cake! I can't say enough good things about this race....

All-around CLASS-ACT!

I have run about 50 half marathons and a dozen marathons, Boston being 5 of those. I ran the half marathon this year. The experience was so good that I will be back to run the full marathon in the near future (and I already have a Michigan marathon toward 50 states). This is a first-class race. Everything from packet pick-up, to the small but complete expo, to the course, to the staff and volunteers, to the beautiful medals and post-race food (chili, hot dogs, beer as well as the usual bananas and bagels) was great; even the weather was perfect! The race gets extra points for having the start at a YMCA, complete with comfy chairs and a multitude of HOT, CLEAN SHOWERS!! The Y staff was EXCELLENT and welcoming as well! Where else can you find an RD who actually SINGS the national anthem? The staff was excellent - upbeat, helpful, smiling. They were ALL having a great time along with the rest of us! I highly recommend this event for newbies and veterans. You know the RD is a runner - gummy bears and GUs were plentiful! Who has at a GU at mile 18?? Most of us start earlier and the RD made sure GU was available before Mile 7. This race should be on everyone's list to do!

Narrow, two-way course was distracting

This was my second marathon, and first time in GR. Beautiful day, and for the most part a great course, except the bike path where we were meeting runners going the other way (miles 12-14, and mile 16) - that was terrible and if it's not fixed, I don't know if I'll run again next year. I was VERY disappointed in the media coverage - especially the GR Press. What was up with that? I loved the aid stations; please add bananas to all of the aid stations in the last five miles! Can we find a way to create a course where we can have more spectators evenly distributed?

Fabulous course and gorgeous day for a PR!

This marathon was top-notch from start to finish! The course is beautiful, as it winds its way through the park and next to the river, with the fall colors in full bloom. The out-and-back portions of the race was great for runner-to-runner support. The RD kept us motivated to get to the start, with daily newsletters and bits of encouragement. And those medals... just gorgeous! Congrats to Marcy from MI for the sub 3:30 PR - it was great running with you!

Awesome race from start to finish!

The Grand Rapids Marathon was perfect. Great crowd/volunteer support, friendly staff, challenging course, well stocked aid stations, and a great race director made for an awesome race day. It was my first marathon (though I have run several half marathons), and I enjoyed every second. It doesn't hurt that I BQ'd! Any runner, from first-timer to seasoned vet, will appreciate how well run this race is. I will be making this a yearly tradition. Thanks again!

Exceptional Experience

This was the best race of any distance that I have ever been a part of. The organization was second to none. Course - The course was conducive to running a PR and was very scenic running along the Grand River. The Industrial Park at miles 16-19 was rather bland; it's hard to stay focused in there. Also, if the race continues to grow at the rate it has over the past 5 years, certain sections of the course may need to be wider in order to accommodate the extra people. As it was, I thought the course was about a 9 out of 10. Fans - For a mid-sized marathon, the fans were a plentiful. It was awesome to see the race guide give the fans directions on how to get to certain "spectator friendly" areas along the course. Some great signs along the course, and very interesting slogans in chalk at certain points. Aid Stations - Best I have ever encountered. Very well manned, plenty of enthusiastic and knowledgeable volunteers. Very well stocked with Gatorade, water, GU, etc. Bathrooms were everywhere out there also. Organization - It was obvious that this marathon was a major deal to the City of Grand Rapids. Billboards, signs, etc. No issues with traffic on the course whatsoever. Very friendly and helpful volunteers along the entire course. My only suggestion is a personal and selfish one. Try to find a date that is different from Detroit. As someone who is trying to run every marathon in Michigan, it makes it tough to choose. In my heart I really want to be back in GR next year, but at some point I need to check Detroit off of the list.

Eighth Time was a Charm for Me

Don Kern, the race director, knows how to organize a race! His e-mails were consistently funny and helpful. I really appreciated knowing that he ran the course with his crew in the weeks prior to the race. It is that sort of attention to detail that makes this race so comfortable to run. The short out-and-backs on the course can be mentally challenging, but runners never need to worry about anything else at this race. The sections along the river were beautiful and interesting. The size of this marathon is perfect. My cheering crew was able to see me three or four times. The aid stations were perfectly spaced, stocked, and organized. Best of all, I finally qualified for Boston!

Well-Organized Race

My congratulations to Don and the rest of the organizing and support crew. They put on a fantastic marathon. They even arranged for beautiful weather!! The course is pretty for most of the race. The support was great, and places where there were spectators, they were very supportive and cheering loudly. The start and finish lines are well arranged. Nice food at the finish. Lots of GU on the course. A great course for those trying to qualify for Boston. Grand Rapids is a very friendly and easily accessible city. The hotels are very convenient to the start and finish. I would recommend this marathon for anyone looking for a small, well-run, fall race.

Best Fall Marathon in the Midwest

If this is your first or you've run many marathons, you need to run the GR Marathon. It's a marathon put on by runners that want you to enjoy your marathon as much as they do. Great course - it's flat, scenic, and much of it along the Grand River. Great fall venue, and lots of support, aid stations, and volunteers to encourage you. You'll enjoy the race director's email messages, words of encouragement and wise marathon advice.

First-class organization and a fast course.

This was my fourth marathon but first in Grand Rapids. Without a doubt this was the best organized, and best overall marathon experience I've had. And it starts months before race day with entertaining and motivational emails from the race director to all registrants. The course is often scenic, almost entirely flat, and very well supported with aid stations stocked with plenty of water, sports drink and goodies. Only criticism would be a couple narrow spots on an out-and-back portion get a bit congested, but not so much that runners are bumping or having to walk. I'd run it again and hope I do!

Constructive Thoughts

First off, my hat goes off to Don and his crew. It is an excellent organized race down to the very last detail. I did PR and qualify for Boston, which is just amazing! As far as the course goes, it is a nice course with some great scenery, but I wasn't really focused on that. It is not as flat as I thought it would be, but I would not describe it as especially hilly. But if you want to run it, it is not flat. For the most part there is plenty of room considering the number of participants; however, running through the bike trails (I think that is what they were) was VERY crowded. I know that depends on your pace and where you were, but for me it was not pleasant. I did almost run into a couple of posts because I couldn't see past the person in front of me. My GPS didn't work very well in the trees (not the race's fault). The crowds were AWESOME! I wished there were a few more aid stations towards the end... but if there would have been one more, I might have stopped and not qualified for Boston. Who knows?

GRM is well organized and personal...

My husband and I ran the half-marathon associated with this race. We both commented on the good organization, the personal commitment of the RD, Don Kern, the good expo (considering the size of the marathon) and the excellent course. Every volunteer knew their job and did it well, from water stops, to course direction, to cheering in less populated areas of the course and in the food tent. The course had a few hills that are minor in comparison to most marathons I have run. I liked the fact that this is a small marathon/half-marathon, making it less crowded and easy to navigate the course. The course itself is without traffic and run mainly on asphalt trails. There's added beauty because it occurs near the peak of the fall foliage change, with orange, yellow, red and crimson canopy throughout the course. There are many wonderful Italian restaurants for pasta loading, many hotel/motel accommodations and access to ample parking across the street from the start and finish of the race. You just can't get that in big-city races. You won't be disappointed with this race and have a good chance at coming away with a nice PR.

Grand Rapids Marathon: a GREAT fall marathon

The Grand Rapids Marathon is a great fall marathon. The size is just right; not too big, not too small. The course is very nice, scenic and great for running. The course takes you from the city, through a few parks, along the Grand River for most of the race and then back into the city for the finish. A lot of the race is run where runners are going past other racers, so words of encouragement and support are always present. The course is flat and fast too. This race is very well run by Marathon Don. He will keep you motivated with weekly newsletters and will shake your hand at the finish too! Don Kern knows what it takes to put together a solid race for runners. The finisher medals have gotten better each year. Parking for the race is very easy and the YMCA provides a great venue for the expo and pre/post-race activities. Course support is awesome; aid stations are well stocked and the perfect distance apart (about 1.5 miles). All volunteers are fantastic and very supportive. Overall, a great fall marathon to run. If you are looking for a well put-on, medium-sized race, this is it. Try it out and you will be back, I am sure.

Great Marathon!

I ran the Grand Rapids (GR) Marathon last year as well. Both years' marathons were very similar. So, with that being said, I won't repeat what I wrote last year concerning this race. The only suggestion I have is to schedule the GR Marathon and the Detroit Marathon on differnt dates. I'm guessing the race director scheduled the GR Marathon the same date as the Detroit Marathon because the GR Marathon course couldn't handle all the extra people that it would attract if both races were on different dates. True, last year both marathons were one week apart, but word is out that the GR Marathon is simply awesome, and it grows in popularity (more people) each and every year. I hear next year that the course will be modified in hopes of reducing bottle-necking.

Wonderful, Smaller Marathon With Fall Colors!

This is a really fun race; the race director and his team do a wonderful job of organizing this race, from the pre-race e-mails to the post-race food. The spectators are very supportive, although this is not the easiest course for viewing the runners. The course winds through bike paths, littered with falling leaves as you run along side the Grand River. There are some not-so-pretty parts of the course, but I thought that the majority was interesting. I also felt that the field of runners were very nice and supportive as well, which really helped at mile 22! This is a mostly flat course - "gently rolling" is probably the best way to describe it. Grand Rapids is a great city, with Midwest charm in an urban setting. We had beautiful weather: cool and breezy, but very sunny. The showers available at the YMCA were wonderful post-race. There were lots of goodies along the race trail from the standard gels to pretzels and cookies. I loved the orange slices and bananas. Lots of water stops too! Try this race - you will not be disappointed.

Almost forgot... WOW medals and cool photos!

I posted a report yesterday, but just wanted to add a few things. This medal is, hands down, the best I've ever received from a race (and I've run LOTS of races!). And the Flickr photo group is a really interesting addition to the normal race photographs.... I've been looking at the posted pics so far and they're amazing! So much artistry and thought were involved in the details captured - more photo-journalistic.

I qualified!

I really enjoyed Don's sense of humor in his e-mails leading up to the race. I ran this race last year and had a lot of fun. It is a great size and a pretty fast course. I finally reached my goal of a Boston qualifier. It is so cool that Don shakes everyone's hand at the finish. Also, the advertising and art work for this race are amazing. The course can be a challenge mentally when there are so many short out-and-backs, but the run along the river is beautiful. I especially enjoyed the foliage. My cheering section was able to see me four times along the course, which was nice. Aid stations were well-stocked, well-organized, and well-spaced. It worked perfectly for me to take my Accel-Gels every five miles. Thanks for a great race!

Marvelous Fall Marathon

This is a top-notch marathon. The organization is fabulous. Everything from packet pickup to the aid stations was flawless. The volunteers are amazingly helpful and very enthusiastic about their race. Aid stations popped up every 1.5 miles, were well stocked, and were marked so that you could easily see which table you needed to go to for water, Gatorade, etc.. They also had lots of extras, from gummy bears to GU. The course was flat by my standards, and takes you through some of the prettiest tree-lined streets you will ever see. And, the fall colors were to die for. There is only one stretch of a few miles that goes through an industrial park that is a bit of a drag, but those things can't always be helped when laying out a course. We also lucked out and had a perfect weather day. Lastly, great medal and technical, long-sleeve race t-shirt. If you like friendly, mid-size marathons, this is a must!

I can't even describe how perfect this race was!

I just completed the 2008 GRM and it exceeded my expectations (which were high based on the comments I had read leading up to the race)! I find it hard to believe that anyone would complain about a course so serene, flat, and FAST! To those who feel that the water treatment plants are an eyesore, I suggest running 105 laps around your local track for your next marathon experience! No eyesores there! After 5 marathons in 4 cities, I can honestly say that this has been my favorite.

Terrific experience, great organization

Everything about this race was great. The course is beautiful. Lots of running on bike trails (some narrow parts, but mostly plenty of room). The scenery was beautiful with the Grand River and changing leaves close by the whole course. Weather was fantastic in '08, but even if it were a warm year, this would be a good course because there is plenty of shade. The organization was great too. The race starts and ends at beautiful new YMCA, which provides everyone access to locker rooms, showers and plenty of places to lie out and stretch pre- and post-race. Incredibly friendly volunteers who were very helpful - from volunteers on the course to the race director who greets every runner at the finish line. They really care about the execution of this race. The only caution I offer is for runners who are used to big-city marathons: the aid station are small, so grab a water or Gatorade from the first hand that offers you one. I blew past two stations with nothing to drink because I didn't act quickly enough. I cannot recommend this race highly enough. I was blown away by the support staff, beauty of the course, and convenience of the locations. Run this one next fall, and you won't be disappointed. Ps. I crushed my PR on this mostly flat course.

Incredibly well-organized race, beautiful course

I truly enjoyed this race. PROS: Everything about the race was well organized - registration, aid stations, start/finish, even the porta-potties. The course was beautiful, with lots of fall foliage along paved bike trails. Locally brewed beer at the finish! The volunteers were enthusiastic and well-trained. Cons (minor): Things did get a little congested at a couple points on the trails, but everyone worked together to keep things moving smoothly. (I'd rather have a little congestion than run on boring city streets.) My pace team ran the first six miles about ten seconds per mile too fast. This was only my fourth marathon, but I wholeheartedly recommend it and will do it again.

Great RD, Great Day, Great Race!

I don't think I have a good enough command of the English language to express what a great job Don does. The expo is first-rate for a small marathon, the aid stations are great, and the volunteers are excellent. Whatever nitpicking negatives can be said about the course's few out-and-backs are completely nullified and overtaken by the overwhelming number of positives. This race is one most runners should seriously consider doing. I've run Boston, and big marathons are nice, but I don't like being stuck in a sea of humanity. At GR, it feels like there is plenty of individual attention heaped on each runner.

Perfect First Marathon

I am so glad I chose the Grand Rapids Marathon for my first. While I have no other marathons to compare to, I can say that everything about this race seemed top notch. The race director is awesome and sends out the most encouraging and supportive weekly emails. The volunteers were amazing and made everything from the expo on Saturday night to the aid stations on the course perfect. The size of the marathon was perfect for me, a nervous first-timer. It was just the right number of participants to keep me from feeling overwhelmed, but not so few that I felt alone at all along the way. Overall, I had such a great time and experience and would definitely recommend this race. Thank you to Don Kern and all of the other wonderful volunteers who put this on each year!!!

FANTASTIC!! This is one to do year after year!

Oh, wow. What a fantastic race! My husband and I (and our baby!) just ran the 2008 GRM and had the time of our lives. It was my second marathon and my husband's first, and it was just such an enjoyable experience from start to finish. We loved running along the tree-canopied course, especially with the vibrant Michigan colors. Even though the weather was perfect and brisk this morning, even on a warmer day it would have been comfortable because of all the shade. The pace teams were great, the bathrooms and water stops were well-stocked and well-staffed, and there were some fun additions to the standard fare at the aid stations (gummy bears, cookies, oranges, and even pickle juice!!). The crowd was just terrific, too. Even though the entire course wasn't lined the whole way like some of the mega-races, it was really kind of nice to have the contrast of those specific places every few miles where there was a big crowd. In bigger races, I have kind of zoned out when crowd support is constant, but here I was more aware of it because there were some moments where it was just us runners, and then we'd entire a crowd zone with all of their cheering and music and posters and cowbells! And how great to have a race director that is so involved with his runners that you really feel like you know him at the end, even if it's your first time running this race! This is truly the way marathons should be run. A+!!

GRM Rocks!

Yes, the GRM course takes you through an "industrial" section, but then it takes you along the Kent Trails. I ran the half last year and I have trained year round on the course, and I can count the times, on one hand, when the "odor" was bothersome (for a minute). I'm proud of GR and all that is being done in this city - I think the course really represents that. Where would you want the course to be, out to the Bryon Center and back?! How boring! Then, you would be complaining about the cows and their "odor." GR is a city. Period. Even walking down the road you will smell car exhaust and bus exhaust, etc. Also, running the course lets you see your tax money at work - the EPA helped clean up the land behind the Coke factory. (And it looks like they are still monitoring the ground water due to the presence of the work trucks and people). I ran my first marathon in June and it was a horrible experience. (Hear that, Red Rock Company? Run Charlevoix Marathon needs A LOT of retooling.) I appreciate the very personal and ORGANIZED feel of the GRM. I love that the start is four blocks from my house - and I love how GR is represented to people from out of state (and in state!). If you want to whine about a course, then hop on your treadmill.

Great smaller-sized race...

I, too, could not disagree with W.O. more.... This race is about as first-class as you can get. It is about running and enjoying a marathon for what it is. And this one is great! A hoot of a race director, superb organization and a scenic course (fast, too). I can't wait to be there again this year!! See you in a few, Don!! (Ps. Completely Disagree with W.O.

My husband and I ran the Metro Health Marathon in 2007. The GR Marathon was our 3rd marathon, and by far it surpassed all of our expectations. The pace groups were incredible, the support (water stops, potty breaks, etc.) was frequent, and the organizers could not be more committed to putting on a great marathon experience. Yes, you run by a water treatment plant. It's maybe half a mile of unpleasant smell, but so what? (In truth, I really do not remember any smell, but I do remember running by the water treatment plant). If the small truly bothers you, then use it to motivate you to run faster. As for crowded conditions, the only time that we experienced it was passing through a narrow gate opening to go from one part of the path to another. This took, maybe, 3 seconds. Other races (including the majors) could learn something from the Metro Health Marathon. They put on one heck of a run.

Excellent Event

I have run 35 marathons, large and small, including every Grand Rapids Marathon and the last seven Bostons. I could not disagree more with W.O's comments, below. True, part of the course is on a bike path, but I have NEVER experienced overcrowded conditions, at any point on the course, EVER. And the implication that the course is ugly is totally unfair and misleading, as well. I'm not saying it is Shangri-La. It is GR and West MI, OK? What were you expecting, W.O.? I have seen plenty of worse courses, when it comes to scenery. About 95% of it is run through woods, meadows and country roads, and a good 50% (probably) runs along the Grand River. What better scenery is there around here? More importantly, for the serious runner, this course has all the ingredients for a PR every time you run it, weather permitting. Pretty flat, not crowded, well-supported and absolutely the best race director and organization you will find. I simply cannot state strongly enough how much I disagree with you, W.O.!!!

Three sewage treatment plants - smelly race

GR is a great city, but this race is run through the WORST of it. Several sections are on bike paths - a source of huge savings for the organizers, but very crowded for the runners. You will also run by the city's three sewage treatment plants. Bottom line: if you don't like the smell of sewage, or running on an over-crowded bike path, then you will not enjoy this race. GR could be an excellent place for a great marathon... but not on this course.

A recommended race to do

I have now done 44 marathons in many cities and can tell you that this race is a very good race and highly recommended. Here are the reasons why you should do this race: 1. The Director is a prolific runner himself and he is not the swiftest, so he understands the velocity-challenged runner's needs, as well as all runners. 2. The Director is at the end to shake every finisher's hand. 3. There is an early start for slow runners. 4. The food at the end is good, with beer. 5. You get a wonderful DVD of the race, which no other race give you. This DVD will last a lifetime. 6. No-hassle start and finish. I certainly would like to see a bigger expo, if possible. Even so, I would certainly do this race again, but I live far and my times and energy are getting slow and scarce. If not this year, another year for sure.

Thanks, Don!

I ran the GRM in 2007 but wanted to wait until I had experienced a big marathon (Boston 2008, qualified in GR 2007) to post comments. Now, you're not going to get the kind of crowds lining the sides of the road that you get in Boston, and you're not going to get a wide-open point-to-point course. But you are going to get unparalleled race organization, superb support from volunteers, and a flat, fast and scenic course. Those who have done Bayshore but not GR may be interested to know that road camber is not nearly the issue in GR that it is for Bayshore. My shins, ankles and hips noticed the difference. If you're not dependent upon a massive crowd for moral support (I'm not), I'm not sure you're going to find a better marathon. It's a great one for running a fast time, so those on the edge of a BQ definitely ought to give it a shot.

Refreshing consolation marathon after hot Chicago

I had registered for the 2007 Chicago marathon, but ended up not running it due to the heat. Initially, I was going to forgo a fall marathon experience. However, not wanting to let good training go to waste, I came across GRM as an option. Although I love the excitement and spectators that come with a giant marathon like Chicago (which I had already run 4 times), I was becoming fed up with the hassles associated with it: difficult packet pick-up, overly crowded expo, hard to find a pasta joint not already stuffed with runners, megabucks for hotel and parking etc. Anyway, GRM was a refreshing scene as compared to Chicago, and I am not only referring to the 50 degree starting line temperature difference! GRM was first-class in every way, from the daily emails from Don leading up to race day to him greeting us at the finish line following the race. The only pitfall of GRM was the limited crowd support. However, viewership of the race is easily accessible to friends/family of racers. My husband was able to spot me at three different points on the course. Another pleasant surprise was the free finishers' DVD I received in the mail recently. I wonder if its delivery was purposely delayed, so as to remind us of the excitement of the race as we wrap up the spring marathon season and ponder which fall race to run? Well, if this is the case, it did the trick. I will proudly run GRM again and again, and encourage others to do the same!

Delivered on what was promised! Great marathon!

The Grand Rapids Marathon delivered what it promised: a race for runners by runners! After running in the Chicago meltdown two weekends ago, I was beginning to have doubts about making it to Boston, but my first GRM experience erased all of that on one wonderful Sunday morning. This race was first-class all the way. From race director Don sending out motivational emails leading up the race to the well organized expo at the coolest YMCA, to the theme pace group, to the volunteers and post race foods including free beer! Plus, the custom color technical Brooks long-sleeved shirt and the great finisher's medal were great. This is a fast and very scenic course! You start in downtown and head out to the pathways in Millennium Park before returning to downtown for a great finish. The majority of the course is on pathways in the park and along tree-covered banks of the Grand River with fall colors. A nice cool fog even rolled in between miles 3 and 7! The course at times seemed a little crowded in a few places due to the narrow, paved trails, but the trails were well marked and flat overall. Aid stations were well stocked with fluids and GU gel and staffed with enthusiastic volunteers. Race director Don was even there at the finish to give a congratulatory handshake to each runner! This race director and his staff seemed to have had great pride and fun in putting together this race and it showed on the race day. The other day, I got my complementary post-race DVD with race highlights including clips of each runner crossing the finish line. How awesome was that! Thank you, Don and staff for helping me get to Boston.

Great from pre-start to finish

What a great race! As others have mentioned in various areas, the course gets a bit bottlenecked because of the layout of the course. However, this was the only negative thing that I can say about the race. As far as the good: free parking at the YMCA, nice long-sleeve Grand Rapids Marathon shirt, relatively cheap registration fee compared to other marathons, ample water and Gu along the race course, and nice medals - and the best part was free beer after the race! I also ran in the Denver Marathon, and found the Grand Rapids Marathon to be more enjoyable from start to finish. I would recommend the Grand Rapids Marathon to everyone!

NO PR, NO BQ, LOTS OF FUN

I had high hopes for Boston qualifier, especially given the perfect weather, flat, pretty course and excellent, fun-loving pacers in Dubya's Running Mates. Alas, it wasn't to be, but it didn't take away from a wonderful experience. And qualifier or not, there was Don at the finish to give me (and everybody else) a congratulatory hug. Check out Grand Rapids. Beautiful downtown, convenient to plenty of dining options. Though not downtown, Sculpture Park is worth a look, too. Way cool.

Excellent Organization, Great Personal Touch

Don Kern is a world-class race organizer. The staff support on this course is first rate. Course is truly as flat as you will find anywhere in the country. Great course for a PR or BQ. Most of course is along river on wooded trail providing shelter from wind. Only negatives are some cone turnarounds that hurt late in the race and the river trail does not lend itself to spectator support. I've run this marathon in '06 and '07 and would highly recommend it to anyone. Great city! Great marathon!

Great fall marathon experience!

Fantastic organization from packet pickup to post-race amenities including FREE BEER. (Thanks, New Holland!! You're one of the things that kept me going from miles 24 to 26.2!) I only gave the course a four based on the somewhat narrow trails where you had oncoming runners - which sometimes affected when/where you could pass other runners. If this race gets much larger (which it most likely will) they may need to update the course. Organization is TOP NOTCH all the way and "Marathon Don" is there each step of the way from sending out periodic emails prior to the race, to shaking your hand at the finish line. Aid stations were plentiful and extremely well stocked and staffed. A great marathon experience that I would recommend to anyone looking for a fall race in Michigan

Fantastic race!

My first marathon! Not too big, not too small. Great course for the most part - beautiful running through foggy valleys and by the river. Easy water stations and lots of encouragement from the volunteers. I'll be back, even faster than the first time.

The Gold Standard

As one of the 10,000 who showed up for Chicago, but decided not to run, I was looking for another fall run to fill the void. After reading the reviews here, I decided to give Grand Rapids a try. From beginning to end, this event does not disappoint. The packet pickup at the expo, held at what has to be one of the most impressive YMCA facilities in the US, was quick and easy to navigate. Race-day parking is close and the weather, sunny and in the mid 30s, was just about perfect. The course is unique for a city marathon with very little "urban" running and lots of parkland. Every water stop is set up the same, making it easy to find what you need at the particular stop. Most were stocked with extras, such as gummy bears, Oreos and even one with pickle juice. The course could use a little tweaking, but still has to rate as one of the best I have done. Spectators were here and there, but were friendly and very supportive. The finish line was well managed, with plenty of food, a nice medal, and free use of the locker rooms at that great Y, just a few hundred yards away. I had never been to Grand Rapids, and wouldn't have visited but for this race. Such a well organized event gives the city great PR and is truly an asset.

Great Organization and Wonderful Volunteers

After some disappointing marathons this year, it was a pleasure to find a race that was so well run. Every volunteer (race expo and on the course) worked hard and gave their all to make my experience one of my best. I have run many marathons (GR made 6 for this year) and I rate this race as one of the best I have ever run.

Beautiful, flat and fast, lots of on course fluids

The majority of this course is through wooded areas on asphalt paths and much of it is along a river. It's beautiful. The organization and support is top-notch. Post-race amenities are great. It's very spectator-friendly and no problem hooking up with your supporters at the finish line. This is definitely a race I will come back to.

You should select this as your 1st marathon

Every marathon should measure their event against this little marathon in West Michigan. It's a marathon put on by people who run marathons. The course is beautiful, flat and fast. The race support is top notch, the city extremely hospitable and the race director is the best in the world. Everyone who thinks about Chicago or Detroit should select this marathon; they'll be glad they did.

Great Marathon Experience

What a great experience!! This was my first finish...my first attempt was Chicago. Don and the rest of his staff should be commended on great organization and support. They planned for everything: water gatorade, snacks, and even pickle juice! Aid stations were closer together than Chicago. I loved to run through the tree lined streets. I didn't like the smell around mile 17, but hey. Also my family got to see me 8 times with the help of local friends and the course overlapping the same spots. Don, thanks for the hug at the finish...it meant a lot.

Perfect race for all

This was my second marathon, the first being a bit larger (Detroit). The course on this one was beautiful. While spectators cannot access much of the course, it is actually a plus at times...much of the course is through beautiful bike/running trails in the woods. There was something nice about the silence of the woods, even with lots of other runners around. Aid stations were great, organization was great. Weather was perfect.

A wonderful experience for my 1st marathon

I've run a few 5K's over the past few years and never imagined training for or running a marathon. I started this year running the LaSalle Bank Shamrock Shuffle 8K after some friends asked if I would like to join them. After that race we all agreed to try a Half-Marathon. My friends weren't able to do the training and I went ahead anyways. During the training I ran my first 10K, 10 miler and Half-Marathon. The site coordinator for the training suggested that since I had gone this far, why not train for a marathon. The rest is history. I want to thank all of the GR crews for everything, especially for seamlessly, and on short notice, accommodating the extra runners that came up from Chicago. All of you made my first marathon an experience that I, my family and the friends that I started the season with, will never forget. I've caught the bug.

Wonderful Marathon!

I ran this one on a whim after running the Nike Women's Marathon the week before. What a great course - all the previously mentioned comments are TRUE! I've run all the big ones, but this one is GREAT. Pretty course, outstanding organization - Don puts on a first-class race that many of the larger marathon directors could take lessons from! Loved the pickle juice, beer and chili at the end, and they gave out a great medal. How could you not love it?? As Arnold says, "I'll be back."

The name "GRAND Rapids Marathon" fits

My wife and I are also Chicago survivors. We were talked into this race to celebrate one of our runner's 60th birthday. He BQ'ed, along with two others from our group of seven. From the expo to the finish line, everything was done right. The course keeps you mentally alert and distracted at the same time, helping the miles seem to fly by. Aid stations and crowd support were also great. Pace teams, Dubya's running mates in particular, were awesome. If you want a great smaller marathon to run, I HIGHLY recommend this race.

This was an awesome marathon.

This entire marathon was fantastic. From the race director, Don, his great pre-race emails that got everyone excited for the marathon, to his support team, to the complete organization of the marathon, both with the water stops that had numerous items one would need or want while running a marathon, to the friendly atmosphere, great spectator spots and a terrific course you could not have asked for a better experience. I came to qualify for Boston and I am leaving with that and a PR over 6 minutes. Thanks to everyone who made this experience so special for me. You can truly tell that this Race Team were experienced marathoners that knew exactly what was needed and so much more. You are all fantastic.

Great Overall Marathon Experience!

After the heat of Chicago, my husband and I decided to try again and were SO glad to find Grand Rapids. We loved the beautiful course and the wonderful volunteers. Race director Don Kern is amazing and I have no doubt he organized the perfect weather, too! There weren't many areas for crowds, but there was tons of support from other runners (thank you to the guy who gave me a GU at mile 21 when I had lost my last one!) and from the 'Dubya' pace team. The hot showers at the Y at the end were such a bonus, too! We have only run the big marathons in the past and really feel that this one has changed our thinking! Though, thanks to this race, I'll be running a bigger one next time - Boston! It was my first time qualifying! :) Thanks again to all who made this race such a great experience!

This was my 20th and GR rates in the top tier of those races. The course was flat and scenic except for the bit through an industrial park (maybe they can route that out next year). The organization was great and only needed more staff to direct parking.

Great Race! Great Day!

What else is there to say about this race that hasn't been said? This was an extremely well run marathon. 1st: the GRM opened up spots for runners (like me) that had a bad experience in Chicago three weeks prior. 2nd: great technical shirt. 3rd: top-notch medals. 4th: near perfect weather. 5th: fog on the course (nice touch, God). 5th: outstanding volunteers everywhere! I could go on and on and on. Having now completed 13 marathons, the Grand Rapids Marathon is my new favorite with the Green Bay Marathon being a close 2nd. Mr. Kern was as real as expected. All bases were covered. He sends out daily e-mails (about 10 days out) to all participants with humorous and motivating comments. He diplomatically acknowledged the shortcomings of the recent Chicago Marathon and promised that this marathon was accepting to many Chicagoans and they would not be disappointed. He was right. God blessed us with great weather and He laid out a course that made it easy for the organizers to map a marathon. Spectators were sparse but energetic. Aid stations were plentiful. All miles were clearly marked. The only suggestion I have is that the 13.1 spot be clearly marked - for those of us that are tied to our watches. Thank you for everything on this beautiful day. I hope to be back and will likely bring other runners with me!

Excellent course, supplies, and organization.

This is the first time I have run the Grand Rapids Marathon, even though I live only a 70-minute drive away. I have run the last 5 Chicago marathons, but I added this marathon because of the horrible heat this year at Chicago. In the future, I will probably switch to the Grand Rapids marathon. The course was beautiful. It is only a little more hilly than Chicago, but the peaceful River Trail is worth it. I prefer running without a lot of people cheering, and there were long, solitary sections to the marathon. Every mile was marked, so I could tell how fast I was running at each section of the marathon. Also, they had GU gel at least every 5 miles, and water and Gatorade were readily available. The weather was perfect running weather, and it was great to have free showers available at the YMCA after the race! The only thing that I would suggest to improve things would be to have race timers in more locations (so that we would know our official time as we approach the end of the race). I would do this again in a heartbeat!

wow, great course, great organization and support.

Thank you Don (race director) and dedicated workers for a wonderful marathon. Loved all the views of other runners as we passed each other back and forth along the course. Some may give negative comments I expect about the out and back loops but this was different from most other races I've done and I liked them. The views were very pretty, ample water, lots of GU and the oreo's and gummie bears were a hit with me too. Well organized, friendly volunteers, scenic route which was flat - what more can a runner ask for (except no rain or strong gusty wind). It was so sweet to have the race director shaking the hand of or hugging each runner at the finish line. I loved this race. I want to run this one again. Nice expo

most beautiful course, friendly staff

This marathon was fantastic! So well organized, and they had plenty of supportive staff members everywhere. The course itself was breathtaking, with the changing leaves, ponds, parks, streams, etc. Because it was mostly on bike paths, there weren't a lot of places for spectators, but when there were spectators, they were awesome and cheering loudly! It had some hills, though, FYI. Overall I highly recommend it. The early start they offer for walkers is a great idea too (though maybe not for the fastest set, who have to go around them).

Best organized, friendliest marathon EVER

If you want a wonderfully supportive, perfectly organized marathon on a scenic, flat course, go to Grand Rapids. Motels are plentiful and reasonably priced. If you do not stay within walking distance of the race, plan extra time for parking. There is plenty of parking space, but the narrow streets leading to the lots get congested by 7 a.m. Overall, the Grand Rapids Marathon is as close to a perfect race as I expect to get. Thanks to the director exemplar and staff for a grand experience.

First rate experience.

Course was beautiful and scenic, with enough diversity to keep it interesting. The volunteers were fantastic and the course crew was resourceful and very friendly. Course Director is top notch in creating a personal experience in a crowd of several thousand. I ran Chicago 3 weeks ago, and the confidence in the management of the Grand Rapids race cannot compare. Aide stations were well stocked, medical personnel abundant and dutiful. Delicious hot chili and soup to warm the bones in the sub-50 temperatures, perfect for a long run. The field was widened to accommodate the Chicago runners, and everyone was made to feel welcome. The community was excited and into the spirit of the marathon weekend. If you're looking for a marathon that is dedicated to both the art and the science of this sport, this race is for you!

Flat, Fast & Fun

It was an outstanding fall marathon that was flat, fast and fun. It has the potential for a world-class event. While the course was beautiful, it was at times narrow enough that non-marathon walkers and bicyclists were sudden and surprise obstacles. Volunteers were plentiful and fabulous. Water/food stations were well stocked. I could tell this run was organized to the last detail by runners. I've run multiple major marathons including Boston, and the Metro Health Grand Rapids Marathon medal is so far the BEST BLING for the buck!!

Best Small Race in the Midwest

I had the unfortunate experience of being one of those 2007 Chicago Marathoners, so I was looking forward to the cool weather and limited field that this race offered. I was pleasantly surprised by how well this race was organized and the runner goodies that were offered. Even the 2007 Detroit Marathon wasn't this well done! Yes, it is a small Midwestern race, but the visit to Grand Rapids was totally worth it. If you are looking for tons of crowd support and the sight of tall buildings, you may be disappointed. The course was rather rural; running on paved paths, and through parks and forests. A friend of mine actually saw live deer just off the course at one point. I would do this one again in a heartbeat!

1st Time Marathon Now Life Time Runner

This was the first time I ever ran a marathon and I couldn't have picked a better one. From the start I ran side-by-side with a stranger till the 1/2 and that was her first marathon as well. I was feeling great till mile 19 and then the brick wall hit me. Not only did I have to walk to the aid station at 20.5, but I was almost ready to give up. But, the help of Metro Health to throw numerous blankets over me, lots of fluids, even put Vaseline on my blistered feet showed me that I had made it this far and I know that god was giving me a breather and a helping hand. At that point, it turned from beating a certain time, to just finishing the race. But, it didn't end there, after about 20 minutes of recovering I still was cold and I got up and started on my way to the finish line when a runner handed me her gloves as I struggled to run/walk. By mile 23 I was almost up to par when I cleared the woods and the sun blazed the path...it was amazing! Even at the end when a pace team member began running next to me to the finish line saying...it's time to smile for the camera :). Even though it was 5 hrs later, the crowd at the end was cheering...for that moment cheering me on and it was great! That is my little story, but for a first timer running the 26.2 it was one of the best experiences of my life. And for me it wasn't just the course, it was each event that took place to get me to the finish line. Thank you for a wonderful marathon and you bet you'll see me next year!

Better than Chicago

I signed up for this marathon after the fiasco in Chicago. I found it online and found the communication by the race director to be very entertaining, to say the least. I will return to Grand Rapids instead of Chicago next year. The communication between the race director and the runners was fabulous. The expo was perfect - no chaos, very organized. They had an early start for the 'velocity challenged' which I loved. I never felt rushed (being a slower runner) and the fans cheered each runner on as if they were in 1st place. The water stops were very well organized with porta johns at each one. The even had gummy bears and Oreos at some of the stops! I can't say enough wonderful things about the organizers and volunteers. This goes down in my book as my favorite and I'll return each year. Thank you volunteers for all your hard work! You really made a difference!

Incredibly Unique Experience

This marathon is absolutely first rate in every way. The course is gorgeous on paved trails near the river and in parks, and mostly flat. The organization and aid stations were wonderful and each and every runner gets personal attention from the race director, Don. I ran this one for fear that Detroit would be too warm for me (and alas, it was), and Sunday was a very crisp day, so I got what I wanted there. The pace groups are made up of 'celebrity times' where you can run with Oprah at 4:29 or Will Ferrell at 3:56 (I kept saying to myself, 'Stay ahead of Will!!!'), or Pi at 3:14. Don shakes every runner's hand at the finish line and sends out witty emails for weeks before the race. Absolutely the best marathon I've run, in every way. I just hope I can get into this marathon next year, if the word spreads!!

Fast, Very Well-Run Marathon

This race is the best. Very flat course, a couple slight inclines, but short and not steep. What makes this course fast (and I would say faster than Chicago) is that its not crowded at all - the path does get narrow in places but I never found myself being slowed down like I have at Chicago. The course for the most part is very beautiful, and if there had been wind (we were lucky), runners would have been sheltered for the majority of the race because of the beautiful trees that cover the path. Aid stations were great as well. If you want to run a fast course and have a time goal, there is no better race - I PR'd by 28 minutes (previous PR set at Chicago)

BEST MARATHON!

What a tremendous experience! This marathon has the best staff, course, support, organization that I have ever seen! Loved the early start option and the fact that us early starters had all the amenities of the normal start time. I was so impressed by the aid station volunteers - they were very helpful and full of cheer. The course is spectacular - mostly scenic paved trail through trees, along a river. This is a real marathoner's marathon! Having run Detroit 7 days earlier, after suffering through the cancellation at Chicago, this was the perfect ending to my marathon month! To top it all off, I finished 26 minutes faster than Detroit 7 days earlier! I HIGHLY recommend this marathon. Many thanks to Don and the entire team - I'll be smiling fondly for a long time!

A top notch marathon

I came to Grand Rapids after running in the sauna that was Twin Cities this year. GR is a very well organized race with a perfect field size. The course was beautiful and the out and backs were actually a nice distraction. The only downside was that for much of the race the path was severely cambered and it was a little tough on the feet. Also, the path got very crowded at spots. But overall it was a very fast course and it was a lot of fun. I set an 11 minute PR even though I had just run a marathon 3 weeks before. The perfect weather also helped. I would definitely do this one again. Thanks to Don and all of the fantastic volunteers. I would call this a must-do midwestern race.

Simply a Great Marathon

My first marathon began in Chicago and ended three weeks later in Grand Rapids. OK, so it was two marathons, but it still felt like one long journey. The GRM still has me smiling, as everyone associated with this race "gets it." Beautiful course; great organization. Maybe the Chicago race was meant to show me the way to Grand Rapids. See you next year!

2007 GR lowdown

Bear in mind that this was only my second marathon.... That said: Volunteer support was unbeatable. Well staffed and equally spaced aid stations with lots of GU's, water, Gatorade, etc..., excellent mileage markers, course directing, and free showers at the beautiful YMCA afterwards. They even made room for 400 extra runners the month before the race (really impressive). Again, only 2 marathons but I can't imagine the race services getting any better than Grand Rapids! And now for the not-so-great: There were several out-and-back spurs on bike paths. While they were nice paths, they were not ideal for 1,517 runners worth of 2-way traffic. I felt like I wasted a lot of energy waiting for a chance to pass and accelerating to pass. Even if they could've, somehow, got it down to one-way traffic on the bike paths, I wouldn't have a complaint. Bottom line: I'd run it again.

Grand Rapids Marathon continues to impress

The Grand Rapids Marathon is the best race I have ever taken part in. It is such a well put on event with great people, a great course and a great city. Race Director "Marathon" Don Kern continues to impress and set the standard for all other races to be compared to. This is a first-class event through and through. They really know how to do it in Grand Rapids. The course is great - well laid out and featuring great fall colors along the Grand River. Aid stations are plentiful and staffed with wonderful volunteers. Runner amenities are first-rate: technical long-sleeved shirt, great finisher's medal, mylar blanket, on-course food and post-race recovery area are all excellent... not to mention a handshake at the finish from the race director. The course is fast and flat and will keep me coming back every year. Check this race out if you are looking for a great fall marathon. Thanks, Don, for putting on such an awesome race. See you in 2008!

super

When I realized that the package pick-up, expo and pasta dinner were at a YMCA, I thought this is going to be quaint. Well, that is the nicest and biggest YMCA, I've ever seen and I've been to many Y's. The staff was very accommodating of the runners. I stayed at Courtyard by Marriott, and it was .6 mile from S/F and they were willing to give a super-late check out. In fact, for the most part, the residents of this mid-sized city were very friendly, hospitable and interested. Everything regarding the package pick up was easy and well organized. The size of the expo was big enough to find anything you needed. The pasta dinner was one of the better ones I've been to. I liked the beauty of the mostly park setting, the changing trees and the river. It is flat and fast. I PR'ed by 21 minutes. The weather was perfect. Great organization with a personal touch.

Excellent Marathon, Great Host City

This was my first full marathon after having run several half marathons. I was originally scheduled to run the Milwaukee Lakefront in September, but decided against it at the last minute, due to the hot weather. Fortunately, it was a great day for a race in Grand Rapids!! Having read previous reviews for this marathon, I expected a well-organized affair, and it certainly was, top to bottom. All aid stations were full of friendly volunteers and were well-stocked with water and Gatorade. Crowd support was fairly sparse, as you might expect, but the fans who showed up in support were great. The course itself consisted of mainly paved asphalt trails with a significant camber - my IT bands paid for it. However, the course was fairly fast and flat, with a few rolling hills, but nothing major. The city of Grand Rapids is quite attractive and the people very hospitable. All in all a great race where I acheived a BQ time.

Great, flat marathon!

I ran this marathon yesterday - it was my "first," aside from the 2007 Chicago Marathon, which I didn't get to finish. I thought this race was great for a first-timer! I am a slow runner so I was really glad that I was able to start an hour earlier (at 7 a.m. instead of 8 a.m.). The aid stations were a lot more generous than in Chicago - Gu, bananas, chocolate, pretzels, oranges, you name it. And of course, tons of water and Gatorade. I thought the course had the perfect level of spectator support - they were there every couple of miles, which is fine for me. The course itself is very scenic, and I didn't even mind the waste water treatment plant - it didn't smell and it was interesting to see. Aside from one or two very small hills at the beginning (more like bumps really), the course is flat. The race director is fantastic. All in all, a perfect first-marathon experience!

Grand Rapids Marathon is the best

There is nothing to talk about. It's the best. Flat course with very few hills, plenty of water stations with food, fruit and Gatorade, power gel, friendly and helpful volunteers, fantastic spectators, beautiful scenic route, and plenty of free beer at the finish line. What else you want to know? Try it and you won't be disappointed. Big thanks to all volunteers and everyone else who made it happen.

Great course, great race

Thanks to everyone involved in the race yesterday! The course is fantastic, very similar to what I run on at home but more scenic. This is a race that I'd recommend to anyone who prefers running on a paved trail through parks and wooded areas to running amongst skyscrapers. The 4th different marathon that I've done, and the rest pale in comparison.

Fantastic marathon, one of the best

I picked Grand Rapids because it was on my 60th Birthday. Some of my running buddies who'd also run Chicago, came along to enjoy a really cool marathon. We got our wish. The weather was frosty at the start and stayed below 50. The course is mainly on asphalt trails in the Grand Rapids metro-park system. Because there are many out-and-back loops there were a few spots where it was a bit congested. On the other hand, it was also fun seeing your buddies at multiple places on the course. That made up for the lack of spectators. My buddies emailed the race director to get me bib 60. Sweet. As instructed in the race directions, I dropped off a bottle of beer (Great Lakes Brewery Nosferatu Ale) for the race director. Post race food included chili, hot dogs and free beer. Runners got a tasteful long sleeved technical T-shirt and a big, chunky medal. It's a fast course. There were a few grades in the early miles but nothing hard. Our group scored two BQs, 4 PRs and 3 second best times. The pace groups are well run and based on the times run by celebrities. I went with Will Ferrell's Sub-4's 3:56:12. I needed 4 hours to BQ on my BD, so this was a perfect time to shoot for. I beat Will by 8 seconds. Highly recommended race.

Flat, but a little crowded at times

Course was flat and scenic (along the river), but some of the paths got very crowded with 2-way traffic, which made pace adjustments necessary. Race was bigger than normal, which might have exasperated the problem. RD did a great job of communicating with the participants - almost too much communication. Overall, if you don't like big, fall marathons (Chicago/Detroit) definitely give this one a look for a BQ.

A Frosty Marathon

This was a well organized race, fairly well laid out, with great fan support. Temperature at or near start time was 31 F (brr). I observed frost on several caps or headbands. It was slow to warm up, with some fog around miles 5 to 7. Still, much of the trail along the Grand River was well shaded from the sun, and just plain cold - but would have been great for summer training runs. Most runners had long-sleeves/pant legs. From about mile 16 to 19 the terrain was elevated and away from the river bed and was sunny and warm. Temperature near mid-day way about 55 and was pleasant for running. But being in the sun made a remarkable difference. Lots of GU, pretzels, fruit, Gummy Bears, Oreos and the like. Thanks to Don and the team in Grand Rapids for still putting together a great marathon event.

Don Kern rocks

Don is by far the most enthusiastic and energetic race director I have ever come across. His weekly motivational emails to participants were great, sense of humor within the website info was fun, and it is very obvious that he absolutely LOVES being the director of this race. Other race directors could definitely take a page out of his book. I agree with some other posts that it would be nice to incorporate parts of downtown GR into the course (there are really interesting sections of town that would be great to run through). However, Grand Rapids has some pretty serious hills and I can appreciate Don's efforts to provide a flat course for those of us chasing PR's. I think I would prefer a few early hills and cool scenery if it meant taking out a little bit of the trail (it's somewhat uneven on parts and was difficult to find a flat portion to run on) and/or the Millenium Park loop or industrial park out-and-back. This is definitely nit-picking though; the course, as it is, is really nice. I enjoyed being able to see my friend three different times during the race on the out-and-backs and had no problem locating my family/friends at the finish. GREAT THINGS ABOUT GR MARATHON: 1. Race director Don Kern. 2. Parking within steps of the start/finish. 3. AWESOME race shirt. Long-sleeve technical fabric with simple and tasteful design. 4. Brand new YMCA at the start - open and available to runners on race day. 5. Plenty of aid stations and three different GU handouts. 6. Large enough to not feel alone but small enough to have your own running space. 7. VERY clever pace groups! I would highly recommend this race.

Nice course, windy day

There isn't much you can do about the weather, but the race itself was first-class. I was really impressed by the Flickr photographers who took photos throughout the race and then posted them online on the marathon's website within a few hours of the finish. I assume these are amateur photographers. I had never seen that before. It's really unique.

friendly fall marathon

This is my 8th marathon and second time running GR. It is very pretty. Love the paved trails. Very well organized. The race director is awesome. Last year and this year he has stood and greeted every runner in! The free DVD is a cool bonus to the race. The shirts are awesome and the medals are unique. It is a small marathon with a big heart!

Great Race, All I Expected

The 2006 Grand Rapids was my first marathon and it was everything I hoped it would be. Lets start with the course. Being from the area, I knew it would be nice, but it surpassed my expectations. Running through the woods on the paths - next to the river with all of the fall colors - was awesome. The fact that spectators couldn't get back here was not a negative thing at all - just take in the beauty. About the spectators: They were great also. True, they did not have access to much (most) of the course. But, where they had access, they were great. Very supportive, just like I've come to expect from the people of West Michigan. Plus, my wife was able to see me and cheer me on a number of times. What more could I ask? The event was very well organized and how many race directors have the sense of humor of Don? None. The pace groups were a good idea (as we were driving to the race, I finally figured out the Pi group), but didn't seem to work real well. My group was rather inconsistant with their splits and eventually seemed to break up. A friend of mine in a different group experience the same thing. No big deal, though. As I finished my training, I though I would keep my future marathons to the spring, but having done GR, I'm sure that I will be back. Great job!

Great Half Marathon

This was my second year running the race. After running the full last year, I only ran the half this year due to another race on the schedule. The half was great. I really enjoyed the race this year. I think I liked the half better because it was more of a true loop versus running the out-and-backs in the full marathon (due to necessity). The race itself is run very well and is a great smaller size race. I do not need crowd support (at least for a half), so this wasn't an issue for me. Although the crowds were few, they were spaced pretty nicely. Overall, I would definitely recommend this race if you are looking for a small, fast and well-run marathon. The only warning I would have is that, although the course is beautiful, it can be mentally taxing when you are on you third out-and-back section.

Awesome organization and a fast course!

Don runs a great marathon. It was a pleasure having him greet all the runners at the finish line; talk about a guy who knows runners! The course was pretty flat and fast. I PR'ed by 16 minutes, even though the wind kept me off an even better pace. The lack of fans wasn't an issue for me because the water stops are so frequent (there must be one about every two miles) that you just run station to station and lap up all the cheers from the volunteers. My only complaints were the wind (out of Don's control), some out-and-backs that turned you back in to the wind and really sapped your energy (miles 16-19), and the camber on the road by the river. None of these would keep me from running it again in the future; it just helps to know they're out there. Thanks again Don; probably the best run race I've been in.

Well organized with a great shirt.

This was my first GR Marathon, although I ran the half two years ago. It was well organized and has a fun-loving staff. Aid stations were plentiful on the course. I actually kind of like the out-and-back sections because it gives you a chance to cross paths with the leaders. The shirt was great. It's by far the best race shirt I've received from a race so far. The course is generally flat without any difficult hills. The crowds were sparse but where they were present they were enthusiastic. If you like wooded, scenic courses, you would like this course. I have two suggestions that I think would be worth considering. 1. I love the outdoors and the woods but after having run this marathon and multiple River Bank 25K runs which follow a similar course, the route is getting so-so. I would love to see this race move into some of the many cool neighborhoods in GR. I think it would attract more runners and get more citywide attention although I'm sure it isn't cheap to shut down city streets. 2. Look into moving the race to a Saturday. This is a heavy church-going town and I know there are a lot of people in this area that head up to the Bayshore Marathon in the spring because it is a Saturday run. I'm sure it costs more to shut down streets on Saturday then Sunday but if it stays on the same course, which uses minimal busy city streets, it might not make that big of a difference.

Well run, small-market marathon

Overall, I would recommend this marathon to someone who is looking for a Michigan marathon. It is small, but well organized. The porta-johns and water stops were great. There aren't a lot of spectators though, so if you need that, this may not be the race for you. The course was usually quite scenic, with fall colors, and it was not hilly. But there were some parts that I didn't like - a lot of out-and-backs and a run through an industrial area around mile 18, which was VERY windy. I thought it was strange that they didn't have a a chip timer at the half. If they could add some of the course to the actual downtown Grand Rapids area, that might be nice - and remove some of the odd out-and-backs. The technical t-shirts were Brooks, and VERY nice. I didn't like how the spectators crowded the course at the finish.

Well-run small-market marathon

I thought that this was definitely a runner's marathon - it was flat and fast, although the weather (high around 45 and pretty windy) wasn't all that great this year. It was so windy that my eyes dried out and I lost a contact lens. There were some very pretty parts of the course that showed off the fall colors, but I didn't necessarily like the out-and-backs where you had to cross paths with the other runners. You never quite knew when you would finally be able to turn around. I thought that it was a bit strange that there was not a chip time at the half marathon mark either. Maybe in the future part of the course will run in the actual downtown of Grand Rapids, and skip some of the odd out-and-backs. The industrial park around mile 18 was very windy and not fun - not to mention it was sort of strange running past a sewage treatment plant. Yet if anyone is looking for a marathon to do in Michigan, I would still recommend this one. The technical t-shirts were GREAT! The water stops and porta-potties were plentyiful. Another suggestion I would say would be to make sure the spectators STAY off the course at the finish line - I almost tripped over a toddler who ran in front of me. The medals were nice, and the hotels were very close to the start. Maybe the half marathoners could start at 7 in the future; it was sort of de-motivating to be running with them. I REALLY loved the celebrity pace groups (I almost managed to stick with the P-Diddy pacers, but ended up just beating Oprah).

Fast Course

I was severely disappointed by my race. Hoping for 3:30 and ran 3:37. Weather was absolutely perfect: 38 degrees, dry and not a cloud in the sky. It was windy, though. The one-mile loop in Millenium Park should be taken out. It got too crowded. A few too many hairpin turns. I am nit-picking, though. The course was beautiful, and organization superb. the best "small" marathon I have ever run. The race director, Don Kern, is great. He was giving hugs at the finish!

Has its ups and downs

Overall, I enjoyed the race, but there were a few things I was less than wild about: The three out-and-back sections for the full marathon got a bit tedious, especially the middle one that went through a business park. It was a very windy section, and going by a sewage treatment plant twice didn't help. Most of the course was very enjoyable. Lots of trees, no traffic concerns at all, and the volunteers were fantastic. Few spectators along the course, but that never bothers me at any race. The organization was great and everyone involved was friendly. I'd come back.

A fun and creative race!

I love the fact that GR is finally host to a great 1/2 marathon/marathon event. My only issue (which I must take partial responsibility for) is that there was not anyone at the fork for the 1/2 marathon when I reached it. I took off with the early runners and was never waved to keep straight. There were no postings that separated the two courses. I was at mile 10 of the marathon before anyone could answer the fact that I needed to head back 1 1/2 miles to the bridge to get back on the 1/2 marathon course. I had asked two aid stations prior and no one seemed to know where the fork was. Had I read the map I would have known... but of couse this time I didn't. The extra three miles were a real drag!

First-class marathon all the way!

This was my first time running the Grand Rapids Marathon and I am very impressed with this first-class event. You can tell that this is a race put on by runners for runners; from the technical long-sleeve race shirts, to the great medals, Mylar "space" blankets at the finish, lots of port-o-johns at the start and at each aid station, well stocked aid stations and overall organization, Marathon Don and company put on one heck of a marathon. Do yourself a favor and try out Grand Rapids for your next fall marathon. It may lack the crowds of Detroit (which is a good thing) but it does not lack quality. A wonderful, scenic course with some city running and paved trails along the Grand River - it never gets boring. The packet pick-up is great too; being able to get your number on race morning is always a plus for those who need it and the host hotel (Amway Grand) is great and not far from the start. The only negaitives of the race (believe me - this is kind of a stretch to find anything negative about the race) is that there are not very many spectators to cheer you on and there are a couple of sections of the course that are through an industrial park and could be improved a bit. The course offers a few out-and-back sections, which is good to cheer on your fellow racers and get cheered on by them as well. The course is relatively flat and fast (I was able to PR by over 7 minutes) but offers some terrain change and twists and turns to break things up. Overall, a great race put on by great people. I am planning on coming back next year and shooting for another PR.

I heard good things about the course.

I volunteered for and also watched the 2006 GR Marathon. Everyone seemed to really like the course this year. Most people seem to agree that the race has improved in each its three years. One suggestion I would make is to close the GVSU parking lot that empties out onto the last quarter mile. Many runners had to tolerate cars that left the lot and crept directly on the runners' heels. Many of these drivers were finishers of the race.

Great Marathon for the True Runner

This race is dedicated to and honors the true marathon runner. It is put on by runners, for runners. If you are a first-time marathon runner and want lots of fluff, run Chicago. If you want to have fun, run a well organized race, PR, get all the amenities a runner needs, have LOTS of great, well-stocked aid stations, run a flat course, get a hot shower at the end, meet great people and have a beer at the finish, then run Grand Rapids. This is the best orgainized and managed marathon I have ever run and I will be back again and again. Thanks Don and crew!

Smaller race with big-race organization

I have run over 20 marathons and several ultras. And Grand Rapids now ranks among my favorites. This is a hometown race but it still has the organization and perks of a big race. The size of it makes it very manageable. Easy to park, easy gear check. Start and finish in the same spot. But you avoid the inconveniences some of the larger marathons require you deal with. The course is lovely. A few too many out-and-backs but it is still fun. The volunteers were top-notch. Absolutely perfect handoffs at the water stops every time. This is the kind of small thing that makes a race great. Because the folks in charge clearly care and want to make the experience the best possible. Very nice awards. Decent food after. Performance fabric race shirt that is actually a very nice design as well. This is a new race and this race director should be proud of the overall excellence of this race experience. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Nice, small, fall marathon

This is a well-organized fall marathon that showcases the beautiful fall colors of Michigan. The organizers of the race were friendly and helpful and the volunteers were great. The course was flat, although the number of out-and-backs was a mental killer toward the end. Also, it did not showcase the best parts of Grand Rapids.... Why not take the runners through the downtown area at the beginning and/or end of the race? This would generate a lot more crowd support, I would think. Also - a minor annoyance - some of the water stations were on a turn, which created a bottleneck at some of the narrower parts of the course. Otherwise, a nice and well-done race - and GREAT shirts.

Scenic Course, Fun Atmosphere, Ability to PR...

This was my 7th marathon and by far the most scenic. A large majority meanders through a park along the Grand River. It has a few small hills and you pass by fellow runners coming and going in a couple of spots, which is tricky, but very manageable. If you draw your energy from the surroundings and not a huge bunch of spectators, then this race is for you. I PR'ed by 13 minutes despite 25 mph winds the majority of the race. Other positives are a great long-sleeved, technical-fabric shirt, an entertaining race director, and lots of hotels close to the start.

Good people, iffy course

I thought that for a small-market marathon, Grand Rapids was very well managed. The water and aid stops were great. Though the fans may have been few and far between, the fans that were around were awesome. My biggest complaints are that the course route is canted (road beveled/tilted) the same way the entire time - killing my right knee/hip - and there are too many out-and-backs including one in the parking lot of a "waste water" treatment plant. Other than those two things, it's a great marathon and the people involved more than make up for my petty comments.

Not many fans, but worth it anyway

Despite the marathon being only in its second year, I took a chance on Grand Rapids because I am a college student there. Another reason was the course seemed similar to a race I ran earlier in the year, the Fifth Third River Bank 25-K, a very exceptional race that I enjoyed and highly recommend. But back to this race, and I will never regret deciding to run the Grand Rapids Marathon. Of the three full marathons I have run (I also have completed Detroit and Chicago), this race was the best-organized. The course did have a few out-and-back areas, but the course was still really beautiful along the Grand River. And since it was full, the fall colors were spectacular. The course is mostly flat with some minor hills, but nothing I wasn't prepared for. The expo was not as big of an expo as the previous races I had run, but I felt like the people were really trying to get to know runners and supporting them well. I just had a feel that the organizer knew what he was preparing that he was an experienced runner who cared about others. The fans were fairly often few and far between. In fact, I may have a little positive bias in the fan rating. This is because as I said, I am a college student in Grand Rapids, and numerous friends of mine came out and supported me at different areas of the course. The people at aid stations, however, not only provided you water, Gatorade, and other goodies you might have wanted, but really tried to act like fans as well. At one aid station, I was offered Vaseline but turned it down, not needing it but just wanting a simple hi-five, and it was granted! Sadly, unless I live in Grand Rapids in the future, I will probably not have another opportunity to run this marathon soon because I graduate in 2007. Another reason is I am planning on running all 50 States. However, if you want a small marathon that is very well-organized and the people try hard to get to know you, this is a great pick! Recommended.

Great race

I'm tempted to lie and say bad things about this race because I don't want it to grow too much, but this is a great marathon. I've run 21 marathons - mostly the bigger ones, multiple times. I plan to run this one every year because it is my hometown and I feel like I can PR on it every year, as I did in 2005. Anymore I don't sweat the small stuff, you know, some people might not like the medal or post-race baggy; I don't really give a crap about that stuff... just give me a course and logistics that put me in a position to run my best. This race is all about that. I guarantee, you run this race once and you will know it was organized by a serious runner. If you are looking for a big-city experience, look elsewhere. If you need a lot of crowd support, look elsewhere. If you just want to PR, Chicago may have a slightly faster course - though perhaps not, when you factor in the inevitable logjam at the start. This is definitely a place where you can break free and run YOUR pace right from the get-go. The worst thing I can say about this race is that in 2005 the wind was tough in the last 6 miles, where an industrial park and open areas offered little buffer from the wind. Lastly, I will say there were kinks in the inaugural race (2004), but kudos to the organizer, because I think they were all eliminated in 2005. Now it's all good.

Low-key, scenic event

Maybe I'm cheating here because I only did the half-M, but we shared our half route with the full. If you want a scenic and well-organized event, but without having to battle huge crowds, this is for you. My wife and I enjoyed staying at the 5-star Amway Grand Hotel, and then just walking 5 minutes to the starting line, which is a lot closer than I usually have to park at the big races! The weather really cooperated with near-perfect conditions. I started out with a pace group, but later pulled ahead to do a PR for the half on this fast & flat course. The best part was the path along the river, under the trees, crunching on the fallen leaves. I'll be back in '06, skipping the Detroit race again if I have to.

Well organized race and fast course.

I highly recommend this well organized race. Parking was within a few blocks of the start/finish and there were plenty of port-o-potties to support the crowd. The course was definitely advertised correctly as "mostly flat." In fact, the things they called "hills" I would call speed bumps! But there was enough rise & fall along the way to keep your legs from getting too beat up. There were several out-&-back sections along the way that were obviously thrown in to eek out another mile or so along the course - if that bothers you, be forewarned. For me, this wasn't really a problem. I opted to run with the "celebrity pace groups" to help from going out too fast. The George W. Bush pace group leaders were supportive and ran like metronomes - I stuck with them almost the entire race and they definitely helped me reach my goal! The long-sleeve CoolMax T-shirt and finisher's medal were world-class, and the YMCA hosting us with hot showers at the finish line was a very welcome bonus! Post-race food was pretty good, the beer was great (and I don't normally drink beer)! Hopefully they'll add vegetarian chili to the menu for future races. I crossed with a BQ and PR time and made sure to give the race director (who congratulates every runner crossing the finish line personally) a big hug!

Runner-oriented - organized by a runner

You can tell that a runner organized this marathon. It offers everything a good marathon needs. Beautiful awards, medals, shirts, aid stations, and food. The course is very scenic and fun to run. It is mostly flat with just a few small hills to add variety. The only negative thing is the smell of the waste treatment plant at the turnaround! I would recommend this marathon!!

A grand fall marathon

A fast, flat out-and-back along a riverbank with the fall colors in all their glory. The luxurious host hotel is 3 blocks from the start-finish at the sparkingly, new Y.M.C.A. This is my definition of a perfect marathon. Only 3 hours from Detroit and Chicago, and only an hour from the Muskego Ferry for fellow Wisconsinites. The finisher and placement medals are done in grand style.

One of the best in the Midwest!

If you enjoy big marathons and everything that goes along with them, traffic, expensive hotels, $20 parking and crowded expos, then you would not like the Grand Rapids Marathon. I like the smaller marathon venues and Grand Rapids has become one of my favorite marathons. The expo and starting line are right off the major interstate, which is easy to find with ample free parking. The expo was hosted at the YMCA. HOT showers with towels awaited you after the race. The course is flat as advertised and offered plenty of water/Gu to drink (I drank water) and gels. The weather was perfect, although it did get breezy for a short time around mile 23. I did not plan to run with the pacing groups they offered, but ended up running with the 'Baldwin' 3:29 group around mile 15. I've never had much luck with pacing groups, but the leaders of this group were awesome! They kept us motivated, they sang, they chanted, told jokes and all but carried us on their backs! I finished with a 3:28 and ended a long slump over over-3:30 marathons. I wish that I could find a pacing group like this one at future marathons! Thumbs up to the director, staff and pacing groups! P.S I hope you enjoyed the London Porter! (They suggest that you bring beer for the race director at packet pick-up.)

Great improvement over last year!

This is a marathon well worth considering. It is very well organized and real convenient (the hotels are withing walking distance). I ran it last year and it has improved a lot. Can't wait to see what next year brings. I could see it was organized by a runner; the shirts were real running shirts, not the cotton ones, and the medals are nice.

Nice Fall Race

I had fun at this race. It's somewhat small and quiet and I agree, it's a good race to just lay down the hammer without too many distractions. Nice course although very winding with lots of turns (it reminded me of a trail run). The hardest part for me was the out and back at 17-18-19 miles because you come out of the gorgeous trees to run an industrial-type road. However there were a bunch of spectators here. Thanks for the gels at the aid stations. Maybe next year I'll try the pickle juice at mile 20. Enthusiastic race director and volunteers. Fantastic long sleeved technical shirt. I'm looking forward to seeing the personalized DVD every participant will receive in the mail!

Great marathon!

Pros: flat, mostly shaded course; hundreds of caring volunteers; well placed/stocked aid stations; great parking, start/finish line; best shirt; extremely well organized; friendly race director; supportive pace runners; showers available; bag storage; great food; great city... Cons: Cannot think of one Thanks to everyone involved - this was a very positive experience; I want to be there again in 2006.

A great value for your running dollar.

Despite having a really bad day personally, I have to say, 'GREAT JOB!' While the race was small and there were not alot of spectators, the volunteers more than made up for it. No only were they there long after most runners had finished, they were as energetic five hours after the start as they were in the begining. I know. I was there. A special thanks to the man who ran several hundred yards with me in the last mile wearing jeans and a button-down, offering words of encouragement. (Not to mention a great shirt and medal.) WELL DONE!

Great premiums, somewhat tedious course

I have to agree with D.R. about the course. It was beautiful for the first 15 or so miles, then it became monotonous; the trees and the river all looked the same. I am a social girl, so since there weren't a lot of runners, this may have played into my 'boredom' factor. Although there were few spectators (Don warned me up front that it was not spectator friendly), the volunteers were very upbeat. I wasn't real crazy about the sports drink, and the volunteers were calling it Gatorade, but it wasn't. Now, let me say... I will WEAR my shirt! Finally, marathon directors are getting the fact that we would rather get a shirt that we can wear running. The logo is simple and eye-catching. The 'medal' is very unique, and I can prop it up on my desk at work for everyone to see. Now about the director. Don is one the most personable directors you will ever meet! He was greeting runners at the expo and he was still at the finish at 6:00 hours to shake my hand as I crossed the finish line. I'm not a beer drinker, so I didn't have any for him, but he certainly deserved it! Thanks Don!

nice for a small race

Fairly good route, great weather, fairly good aid stations, well organized, and good post-race food/support, but they need to include the chip in the packet.

Nice course, well-organized

We had the good fortune of wonderful weather to complement the beautiful fall day, with golden leaves falling on this nice course winding along the river. Great starting spot at a really nice YMCA - you can stay warm before the race. This was the opposite of running the Chicago Marathon. Few spectators (but very supportive), most of the run is away from the downtown; you aren't running in the moving human sardine can for this one. This is about running - you and the road. The aid stations were set up very well; in fact I can't really complain about anything. It was just a really nice race, and I personally had more fun in the Grand Rapids Marathon than I did in Chicago a few weeks before. Don't get me wrong - Chicago was good too, this was just a very nice race, and better for running. Excellent chili and other snacks at the end of the race. Kudos to the race organizers and the many very nice volunteers! I'll do this one again.

Good event and even better town

The day was blessed with perfect weather: Cool (40's) at the start and a mild, low-60's high. Although from Chicago, I have never been to Grand Rapids. I was pleasantly surprised it is a very nice city, bigger than expected. The downtown is very clean and has a lot to offer. For being only in the 2nd year, the race was well done. The course is the main downside of this event; there are too many out-and-back segments. If you need spectators, they are sparse. This did not affect me, for I ran with a pace group 3:29, which rocked. The celebrity theme pacers were a nice touch. At the finish there were no massage tables, although medical did do a brief and great job when I asked for a massage. The entry fee was a value - for $55 you received a nice long-sleeve wicking race shirt & a unique medal. One of the best features was an unheard of 4pm check-out from the Days Inn; runners were able to take their time after the event. If your looking for a medium-sized fall marathon in the Midwest, this is a nice event. If I were not pursuing all 50 states, I would run this event again. Overall grade: B.

Great small marathon

Great host facility in the local YMCA. Course was nice if you like paved trails along the river. Excellent race shirts and posters given to participants. Very well organized and friendly volunteers. I would highly recommend this marathon.

Well organized, great colors

Great weather. Course was pleasant. Most of it on paved trails in woods with great fall colors; miles 16-19ish through really boring industrial area. Paths sometimes narrow, but passing was never a problem. Got to be a tad monotonous at times. Volunteers were great, high energy bunch, having fun. Limited spectators. Good beer from area micro afterward, could have had as much as one desired. Chili afterward was like licking an ashtray (see also comments from last year posts); might be time to switch to chicken soup. Pretty fall colors, well organized; if you don't need the crowds it is one to try.

I would run it again

I liked when the MC said that there were no Kenyans in today's race. Great start. The only thing that I regretted, as I entered Grand Rapids, is that I forgot to buy a tequila bottle (in Chicago) for the race director. However, next year I will bring him a whole litter just for himself (so that he missinterprets the numbers and we all get PRs). The expectators were very well distributed and my question is, do you tell them where to stand or they just come out and cheer us? A lot of them took pictures of us despite the fact that we were not their relatives or celebrities like Khalid Kanouchi. I love the witch that gave me vaseline. The foliage was expectacular. The only problem is that you have cameramen in the final miles asking us to smile when we wanted to cry, to stop, to be carried on an ambulance. Marathons are hard, but we are like Quijotes. As my son and I were returning to Chicago, I was planning my next one. It will be Grand Rapids. Thank you.

awesome!

This has got to be one of the best marathons in the country. Pretty much anything you need, this marathon has got. I was extremely impressed! The entire idea of celebrity pace teams is a lot of fun; there were lots of aids stations (which is very much appreciated) with Gu, the volunteers were very energetic and enthusiastic, the specators that were on the course were great, and the course is flat and not a double-loop (they were really creative in not making it a double-loop, which I really appreciated). I also appreciated getting a navy technical shirt rather than a white t-shirt. I really felt they bent over backwards to make it a positive experience. If you want to be treated like a champion and have a wonderful marathon experience, this marathon is it! The only negative about the marathon is that they should do ChampionChips at the expo, rather than on race morning. If the race gets any larger, race-day ChampionChips could get to be a serious problem. I plan to be back next year. Thanks Don!

Beautiful Race that Needs Some Tweaking

The course was great - flat as advertised, and makes for fast times. Not a lot of spectators but lots of chances to pass by other runners at the turn-around points. My two major complaints: Gatorade was extremely weak and timing chips weren't available until race-day morning - a little stressful. Otherwise a nicely done race - definitely put on by runners!

A Great Fall Treat!

My hat is off to the marathon team, fans, and the many 'first time marathoners' that I talked to.... It was a pleasure to run this. I even ran a PR (and this was my fourth in five weeks!). The only area that I would have liked to have been done differently was the 'same day chip pickup'.... I am proud to wear your neat shirt! Best to you next year!

Beautiful Marathon!

I cannot say enough good things about this marathon. It was flat, fast, and beautiful. The day didn't hurt, either, as the weather was absolutely perfect. The race organization was exceptional and we received updates from the race director daily leading up to the race. The YMCA was a great host and the host hotel is literally 4 blocks from the marathon start/finish. Kudos to Don, his staff, and the volunteers. This marathon will grow with this kind of management and locale. Thank you!

Great day for a marathon, for sure

What a beautiful day, and a well run race. It isn't my favorite course but not without its charms. I love woodsy trails, but 26 miles worth of so-so bike trail got as little repetitive. But, not bad, really. The weather was perfect, and the organization and volunteers were great. There are almost NO spectators on this one though, so take note. I didn't think it would bother me, but it did. I was often all alone for a hundred yards in each direction and mile after mile was without spectator encouragement. But please don't take this as too much of a negative. The volunteers were great, and there is much to like. I loved the YMCA, for a warm place to wait for the start and a warm shower after the race. I got an all-over good feeling from this race.

Out...back...out...and back AGAIN!

Although this was my fastest marathon, it wasn't the most stimulating. Due to the out-and-back course (which you had to run twice), I was a bit defeated when I saw the same scenery for the fourth time. It was fun to see other runners (like my dad who was a few miles ahead of me), but it was nearly impossible for spectators to take part along the course. It was a very cold morning, and the race started late, but I think it was done very well considering that it was an inaugural event. One of the biggest perks was that the course was VERY FLAT! Overall, it was an enjoyable experience, and it was nice having a marathon so close to home. The only thing that would make it better would be a little variety in the course.

Great small marathon

This was a great small marathon on a very flat course, with only one very minor hill of any note at all. This is a good race for a PR because it is flat and not congested with other runners. There were some minor glitches that I'm sure will be ironed out next year -- a couple of stations ran out of Gatorade (pretty early in the race, too) and the start was delayed a few minutes. Crowds are sparse for the most part due to difficulty of access in the race's park setting, so if crowd support is important, be aware. But if you've run a few and some big ones, and you are looking for a good race to just put the hammer down, this is a good one. I hope to run this one every fall. I really appreciate the race director's efforts; he obviously is a runner who knows what he is doing, and he did a phenomenal job for a first-time marathon.

Great Inaugural Race

I can see this race was put on by a runner. The water stops along the way were great. The only downside was running on a trail and not sure which side to run on with runners going both directions. Other than that, the race was put on great.

Excellent inaugural event

I don't have a lot of marathon experience, but it doesn't take a lot of imagination to think of all of the things that could go wrong on a first effort of this magnitude. Aside from running short of Gatorade and food on the course and a few parking headaches, there is very little that anyone could find to criticize. Despite the burnt chili there seemed to be adequate food and the beer was cold at the post-race. The race was top-notch and I am sure it will get even better as some of the rough edges are knocked off in coming years.

Expectations = ????/Satisfaction = ++++

This one was great!! My expectations weren't real high - first-time event, small turnout, double out-and-back course, run on a paved bike path, etc., etc. But, the organization was excellent, the course was beautiful (all along a river), the logistics were well planned and the execution was well done. And the amenities were comparable to the big races. I'll run this one again and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a nice fall marathon.

nice course

I was surprised by the out-and-back, usually not so nice. Good little bumps on the course, and the small hill at the end. Chili was burnt, fire was too high. Loved the t-shirt, much better than the plain old cotton. The race director put out a lot of effort on the one. Only real negative thing was the grand prize drawing at the pasta party. Maybe make something next year that can be taken on an airplane for those of us who travel to races.

Great Inaugural Event

This was my first 1/2 marathon. The pace teams were fun to watch, even though I couldn't keep up with any of them! I love the cool finisher's medal. Great event, nice people and Krispy Kreme donuts at the finish, YUM! Thanks!

Beautiful inaugural marathon

What a great job that was done for this first time event. Highly reccomend this if you want a well organized race on a beautiful, fast course, with a friendly, personal feel to it. The course is a double out-and-back with plenty of opportunities to see all the other runners. Beautiful course, mostly on a paved path with lots of trees and great views of the river. Well marked, plenty of aid staions to support the runners. Crowds were small-ish, but to me, that's the trade off for running in a park-like setting instead of downtown or through a subdivision. What the crowd lacked in size, they made up for in enthusiasm. Post-race food was delicious and plentiful. Nice laser-cut medals and long-sleeve tee completed the day. The race director sent out lots of emails prior to the race keeping you up to date and motivated.

First marathon, hometown, what an experience!!!

I just finished my very first marathon. I am still numb. A good numb. I wanted my first one to be special, and it was. Right here in my own backyard. Everyone was so help full from the volunteers in the parking lot, to the guys handing out chips, people walking by asking if I needed anything. I must have looked a little obvious, as a first timer. The park is beautiful. While we missed the full color of fall, it was still something running along the river and through the woods. The fans were amazing. Braving the cold and wind. Everyone giving encouragement. Calling out your number or catching your name from friends or family. Even remembering it next time around. That was awesome. The finish was something. My kids (Cassidy & Carter) came out and ran the last 20 yards. We finished holding hands - or were they holding me up? The staff at the end was amazing also. The lady putting the medal over my head and looking into my eyes and saying 'You did it!' That was cool. I did do it and I will do it again. This will become an annual thing for me. My hometown marathon. Great job, Don!!!!!

Pretty Good for an Inaugural Run

Some logistics problems caused a 20 minute delay to the start. Due to the way the course was laid out, runners were meeting other runners several times on the course and no one to guide who should be on the left and who should be on the right. Can't find online results. However, a wonderfully flat, scenic course. Great aid stations and lots of encouraging spectators along the way. This run definitely has potential.

Everything about this was first-class.

This was the most organized race I have ever run in. The staff/volunteers were the best I've ever seen. Every single person involved was AWESOME and strived to make it a great day for all involved. Mission accomplished!!!! I intend to run this one every year it is available. Beautiful course as well, especially since they removed the wall at the 18th mile!! Much appreicated. Thanks again guys. You are the best!!!! Also, thanks to all the 'little helpers' who were passing out food and picking up our cups. They made me smile every time. :-)

I'm going on a few years now that I have run this great race in Grand Rapids. I love coming back to see Grand Valley State University, nice college. I can't wait for what is going to happen when I complete for the 10th year. Great course, loved the chili dogs after the race. Warm showers right at the finish line, over did it... thanks.

Great fun; just drifted along with no effort.

Great fun, course easy, aid stations many, registration smooth, didn't hit the wall, just floated along with little effort and finished strong with a PR. I'd like to run this one again! All in all, a real dream of a race... Hey, maybe it was a dream since the race hasn't been held yet...
