Good Times. Noodle Salad.

Lots of half marathoners! I did the full and finished ahead of a least 3,000 of them. Did they save me any food worth eating? No! Luckily for me there was plenty of Michelob Ultra Light. Oh yeah: don't oversleep for this race; traffic is bad.

Last chance to run Lewis and Clark

I did the half in 2007 and trained for the full in 2008, only to be disappointed by Mother Nature. Not to worry - she delivered this year!! This was a great race with plenty of support and enough scenery change to keep it interesting. 370 and the bridge is always a highlight for me, and despite the not-so-pretty jaunt on Hwy94, the "country leg" that follows is a great change before heading towards the half. I realize the Family Arena lot was a necessary add to get mileage, and I really appreciated the volunteers there who tried to make it interesting for us. The Superstar photo (mirror) cracked me up. The "add" of the subdivisions was great and added a little hilly interest and an excuse to walk. The mini-crowds in the residential area were awesome. Ending on the Katy trail was perfect relief from the sun, and for the legs. It also allowed for some nice solitude at the end of a long run...definitely a good revivement for the finish line crowd! I'm curious to see how this will evolve into a St. Louis-St. Charles Rock 'n' Roll, yet so sorry to see this great race go away. Thanks for another great run, Fleet Feet!

Fantastic First Marathon

This was my first marathon so I was not sure what to expect but I was definitely not disappointed with any aspect of the course, the organization, etc. The full marathon starts with the half marathon so there is considerable congestion at the beginning but this is offset by offering areas for different pace groups to gather and chip timing. I was actually still in line for the potty when they fired the starting gun! :) Once underway, the course was enjoyable and there were several spectators along the way. I was able to get good luck hugs and kisses from my family at the 13.1 mark; just what I needed! Water, GU Brew, GU Gels and Chomps and other items were readily available so hydration and nutrition was not an issue. There was also plenty of food and drink left at the finish (even after my 4:30 finish!). I thoroughly enjoyed the Katy Trail portion as the gravel trail was a welcome relief to my legs after all the time on the roads. Have fun with this run!

Nice race; good support; poor shuttles.

Race parking and support on the course were very good. Could have done without the stones in my shoes for 10 miles. Shuttle service was abysmal. Buses were leaving with empty seats, and marathoners were made to wait 30 minutes due to 1/2 marathoners and families being in lines. There should have been a marathon finisher only line!!! Once again, marathoners could not get massages due to 1/2 marathoners taking up all the tables. Who do you think needs a massage more: 13.1 milers or 26.2 milers? No chairs in men's changing tent. End of race had too many turns in St. Charles. St. Charles should have its own marathon only race; I would come back for that.

Fast and Fun... Great Half Marathon

Just ran the 2010 Lewis and Clark Half Marathon. The day was cold, but still was a great race. Kudos to Fleet Feet for putting together a great race. The half-marathon course was mostly flat with two small hills at mile 7 and mile 12. Plenty of spectators along the way to help encourage the racers along. At the end, there was plenty of food, snacks, and beer for all runners to enjoy. My only recommendation is to have signs informing racers how to get to the shuttle bus. There were plenty of folks looking for directions.

Farewell Lewis and Clark

I ran this in 2009 two weeks after New Mexico. Ran with a friend running his first. Ran just to pace him and finally get Missouri off my list. This was supposed to be my first in 2008, when the remnants of Hurricane Ike perfectly coincided with the start of the race. Wow! What an experience. The entire race had to be shortened to 10 miles due to flooding of large portions of the course. The out-and-back on the Katy Trail would have been a swim leg. I don't need large crowds cheering me on to run, so I don't mind the Katy Trail portion. I thought they did a good job overall of dealing with a very unfortunate situation. Mother Nature always wins.

Flat and Fun! Great Course!

People are crazy if they didn't like the back half of this marathon. Running on the hard-packed dirt was ideal for running quickly without injuring myself. The second half of a race is always tough, and I feel like other people blamed the course instead of a lack of training. One of the best events I have ever run.

2nd half of the marathon is terrible

The first half was great. Some parts didn't have many spectators, but the ones that were there were great. Also, there were enough other runners around to have encouragement. The second half was terrible: 6.5 miles out and 6.5 back on a gravel trail. Yes, there was shade, but no breeze and very little spectator support. Also, not enough water stops. Next year, I will stop at the half.

First half just ok, second half trail/dirt/shaded

I found this flat course relatively easy. It got warm in the later stages, and having a goodly amount of shade on the trail was welcomed. Like many smaller races, spectators are sparse. This was no exception. I like the frozen banana Popsicles at the end, as well as the announcer who announces your name as you finish.... I would have like to have a split time at the half, but there was no mat. It turns out that I ran a negative split. I think they could have done a nicer job of highlighting the beautiful St. Charles area. Sorely lacking on porta-potties at starting area. Sadly, most marathons are this way. I ran New York City (11/1/09) and they had more than enough porta-potties (which was a surprise for a large marathon). Very nice medal.

Ok course, but organization needs some help

I ran the half-marathon, which was my first after running three marathons previously. The course was mostly flat, with a couple of short, easy climbs before reaching the Missouri River Bridge, which was a steady, long climb. Most of the race was devoid of spectators with a few notable exceptions; the finish line in St. Charles was packed with spectators. I do have to ding the race organizers for the inadequate number of port-o-potties at the start. At gun time, there were still a few hundred people in line and they all got panicked at being left behind. I stayed in line since I was only focused on my chip time. Also, there was no crowd control after the finish line. Spectators mingled with runners in the chute and I had to fight my way to get my finisher's medal. The finisher's tent was a mess, with a huge, slow-moving line. I felt not taken care of at all in the finisher's area - especially in comparison to other marathons. I doubt that I will run this event again.

Overall Nice Marathon

I ran the full marathon. I really liked the option to have the race packet mailed. That worked out nicely. Good medals (the medal is important to me). The post-race party was good. Overall, the race was well organized. The course was a little boring; however, it was pretty much flat. I liked running in the downtown area. I didn't love running on the Katy Trail. I got several small rocks in my shoes and didn't like sharing the trail with the bikers. It wasn't terrible; it was just something to deal with. The shaded areas of the trail did help with the heat and sun. I would suggest that the marathon runners have different color bibs then the half-runners so that spectators could know when to say, "You're almost there...." I'm not sure how I feel about running right next to the half's finish chute. I was concerned that I missed a turn for the full. Overall, I am very happy with my run. It was a little hot, but that's kind of expected for mid-September. I think next year it is being moved to October. The race was very well organized! Thanks!

I ran the half.

Decent half-marathon. Nothing too thrilling or exciting. Rather industrial versus scenic but a good training run. LOSE THE ANNOUNCER AT THE STARTING LINE. Good organization, nice amenities (shirt and medal) and the post-run food was good and well organized. It would have been nice to have run the full, but it just didn`t fit the schedule.

Overall good marathon

The course is rather boring, but the organization is good. One concern is that the sports drinks were so watered down that they seemed literally like water, which was a big negative for this heavy sweater.

Good half-marathon; full-marathon not so much

The first 13.1 were great, with good roads and everything. Just past the half-marathon finish, the full marathon hopped on the Katy Trail, and that's where it all went south. The course for the second half seemed like an afterthought. There were still sufficient aid stations and volunteers, but with virtually NO spectators it felt a lot like a training run. If you feel like the crowd helps you overcome the mental drag of running 26.2 miles, this is NOT the marathon for you. Post-race facilities were fine, spectator areas on the FIRST half were great, and volunteers were great. I don't know how many johns there were at the start line, but there weren't enough. I waited in line for 25 minutes and didn't get halfway though it; I had to use the first one I came to out on course. My honest appraisal: do the half, but skip the full marathon at Lewis and Clark unless they change the course.

So-so

My comments concern just the half, which I ran, but I have run in this area quite a bit over the years, particularly the marathon course. The course is very boring if you are coming in from out of town. Crossing the Mo. River is about the highlight of this course. The half marathon dwarfs the marathon as far as number of participants, but if you need another state for your resume, this is fairly flat, especially when you hit the Katy Trail. Organization/support is very good, but don't expect much crowd support, especially for the marathon course.

Packed first half; nice but HOT second half

I flew all of the way from Key West to run this because it was supposed to be flat. The second half was, but the first half had two doozy hills. AND OH MY GOODNESS, WE WERE SWAMPED WITH HALF-MARATHONERS! The first half was really tough because there were just thousands and thousands of half-marathoners. Plus, it was 100% concrete, which wiped out your legs for the second half. But the second half was wonderful - flat as a pancake, uncrowded, on hard-packed gravel. Unfortunately, by the time you got to it, it was 85 and humid. It was an out-and-back on the trail, so you knew what to expect and where the aid stations were. I saw people turning around, avoiding several miles; I hope they didn't claim to have finished! Great medal, and very nice, but limited spectators. Lots of aid stations too.

Enthusiastic support but poor course

Let me initially say that the support surrounding this race was great! The volunteers were tremendous, every single one. However for me they couldn't overshadow the course on the back half of the marathon. If you choose to run this course be forewarned that miles 13.1-26.2 are run on the Katy Trail, which is a crushed stone/crushed gravel trail. It was very uneven, with numerous bike ruts and washed out tiny gullies. I should have known that I was in trouble when, while the majority of the race's half-marathoners were finishing, the chute for the full marathon participants to continue the marathon portion was actually being crowded in on by the spectators and only one volunteer was assigned to keep them back off of the course. Then on the Katy Trail I was quite surprised to see non-race traffic in the form of bikers of all ages on their usual Sunday rides, walkers with their dogs, and other people out jogging. And not just a few isolated incidents but it appeared that there was no attempt to keep these folks off the course. I saw several runners who needed to move out of the way of the bikers! Also there didn't seem to be a sufficient number of water stops on the back half of the course, as there were several times when I found myself thinking, "Boy, I'm getting a little thirsty!" One other item for the organizers would be for the volunteers to all wear the same-colored shirts so they could be distinguished from the non-race participants on the course. Finally, at the beginning of the race in the amphitheater, there were an insufficient number of porta-potties. I'm going to estimate that there were about 30-40 of them and I had to wait from 6:30 a.m. until 7:05 a.m. to use one, which meant that I just barely got back to the start corral by the 7:15 a.m. start.

Top-notch

I ran the half this year for the second time. I just wanted to say that Fleet Feet always does a great job hosting this race. Spectators could have been more plentiful, but I also enjoy the silence sometimes. Overall, great race!

Very well organized marathon

Overall, this marathon had good organization, and at $55 it was not too pricey. It would have been nice if they had some sort of expo as the packet pickup was at the various FleetFeets in the area, but they are the major sponsor so understandable. The first half of the course was not bad. There was even a stretch where you could see other runners on the other side of the road. The last half was on the MKT trail where you run out 6.5 miles and back on fine gravel. This seemed long and lonely until on the way back when I got to see the others running out. It is almost like the marathon was an afterthought for this race since over 4,500 finished the half and only 688 for the full. I do feel like it is a fast course if someone wants to BQ, even with the trail portion. I think a full road course might get better participation. There were sparse crowds along the first half and a lot close to the finish. Spectators were very few along the trail. The volunteers, though, were plentiful at the water stations. The finish area was great and there was plenty of food. I am glad to have run the marathon and most importantly I did have a good time.

great smaller race

This is the first time I had run the "new" course, and after the first 9 miles (dull stretches through industrial parks - though it's not like you need much stimulation at that point in the race), it's beautiful and flat. The aid stations were fully supported even for us back-of-the-packers, which I always greatly appreciate. Superb organization and enthusiasm from race personnel!

2010: First-timer marathoner

No hurricane to battle this year. I had a wonderful time and loved the city. I can't run anymore because of injuries, but I still like to compete, so I walked. I did a time of 5:54. I was still able to beat 68 runners. I was actually wondering if there were any more walkers that were involved. I plan to do this one again next year with my son. Lots of water and fluids were provided. Half of the course is a trail. It was a fun experience. There were around 5,000-6,000 participants, I believe. Most did the half. We all started at the same time, which made it interesting. Around 688 completed the marathon itself.

great people, boring course

This is my second time running this marathon. Last year I ran the shortened race in Hurricane Ike. The organization was good and the spectators were great for the first 13 miles and at the very end. But other than the aid stations, there was no one out on the section of the race on the Katy Trail (miles 14-25). Overall, the course itself is BORING. The race starts with 8 miles through an industrial park. The only thing interesting to look at was the runners on the other side of the loop. Then there are about two miles of winding through corn fields - no scenery and no shade. The Katy Trail portion of the race was also surprisingly dull. There were a couple of nice views of the river, but that's all. I might do the half-marathon as training for another race, but I won't be doing the full marathon again.

Overall a good race.

I ran this because the date was convenient and I needed one in Missouri. The organization was so good that it overshadowed a so-so course and the few spectators. Good water and Gatorade support; plentiful porta-potties.

Running with Ike

This was to be the first marathon for me and my son, and I will never forget the experience. We drove from Bowling Green, Kentucky the night before, and enjoyed St. Charles (the town) a lot. The run was total confusion, only because of IKE. We were soaked and cold, but I'll never forget running across the I-64 bridge, as I have traveled it many times in younger years. Overall, I enjoyed the run, but was disappointed that we were unable to finish it. N. Yates, Bowling Green, KY

I ran with IKE

This was the second time this was to be my FIRST Marathon. Last year, I had an injury just five weeks out and ran the half instead. This year Ike won. However, once over the disappointment, I did enjoy running with 4,000 other crazy runners in this shortened race. Course - very good course; too bad we did not get to experience all of it this year. Organization - Registration: Except for having to drive in an extra day to pick up a packet... and not much of an expo to experience once there, registration was exceptional. It would have been nice if at the 8-mile mark, when we first took a modified turn, they could have told us that the races were shortened to 10 miles, but under the circumstances, I'll give them a pass. Volunteers were amazing!!!!! At least we were able to warm up by running. They braved the rain and steady 25 MPH winds and up to 40 MPH gusts just to support us... THANKS VOLUNTEERS! Spectators - more abundant than you would think in this weather. Thanks to those who were there; I told my wife to stay at the hotel because it was so bad. For the runners coming back next year: I encourage you to drive to the parking area the night before and see the best way to get in. There are two roads that lead into the parking area. People coming from Highway 365 were all going into one entrance, which was not the best entrance for this event. By the way, thanks to the family who gave me a ride from the hotel.

Lewis and Clark and Ike!

Too bad about the weather, but kudos to the race committee and volunteers who performed brilliantly in 5 1/2 inches of rain and winds gusting up to 50 MPH. Though I was disappointed at the shortening of the race, it was the correct call. The few complaints registered, I venture, are from those who have never been involved in organizing a race. Courses must be certified well in advance; any alteration to the course would have invalidated the results. And given the weather, there would have been nowhere safely to re-route runners anyway. My hat's off to the race committee and those great volunteers. I'll be back next year.

Disappointing

I understand that the weather can't be controlled, and that made things difficult this year, but this was still not a very well organized event. There is no race-day packet pickup, so I had to make a trip from out of town twice. The traffic getting into the race was horrible, with around a 1-1/2 hour wait to get to the parking. Then, the start was being delayed and most people were standing around in the driving rain with no idea when/if the race was going to run. Finally, with no announcement, the race was started to general confusion as many people had to scamper from all over to get to the line. They decided to shorten the race, as you have read, but weren't able to inform us of this until we had less than 1/4 mile to go. I know circumstances were difficult, to say the least, but bad weather was predicted days in advance. People paid a lot of money and put in a lot of effort to do this race; a contingency plan and better communication would have been nice.

Race directors did the best they could w/ Ike!

We give a lot of credit to the Fleet Feet staff and race directors to put on the best race they could considering the conditions and necessary last-minute changes. We went into it with an open mind and still thoroughly enjoyed the insanity of participating - in 22+ years of running, we've never seen anything like it! Special kudos to all of the volunteers, the police, and those spectators that braved the conditions!!! Were we disappointed in a couple of things? Sure, we felt the volunteers directing traffic could have been more proactive/organized (the poor people in the east lot must have been surprised to find their cars partially underwater after the race). We wish there had been a way to finish the half (we especially felt badly for the full marathoners, though), but knew that was near impossible with such short notice. As a former race director, I understand and can appreciate how difficult it is to rearrange race-day plans due to inclement weather. Two things are for certain, though: we will both be back to run another Lewis & Clark, and we will NEVER forget our crazy experience in '08!

When life gives you lemons...

So, I didn't run my half-marathon, but I got to experience something more spectacular. All of us who ran showed amazing perseverance as we were tested to the limits. For the majority of the half-marathon course that I did run, I thought it was nice and flat. If the weather cooperated, I could see being able to set a PR on this course. I applaud the race directors for doing the best they could with so many obstacles, and I especially want to thank the volunteers and spectators who came out to support us. You were amazing!! Maybe I didn't reach my initial goal for the day, but I came away with something much better. I now know I can run in a deluge and live to tell the tale. What a great one to share for future long runs!! Great job, everybody! We definitely made some lemonade - buckets of it!!

One to remember

This is one to remember, that's for sure. I signed up for the marathon, so as others, I was disappointed that the race was cut short; but it was understandable. As everyone knows, forecasting weather is a crapshoot - sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you do not. With a double whammy of a strong cold front AND Ike, the amount of rain was more than anyone expected. I survived Chicago last year, and in my opinion, the Lewis and Clark organizers did a far better job dealing with adverse conditions than Chicago. I'll be back again!

Great Volunteers and Supporters, Poor Planning!

First, to the volunteers and supporters, you were AWESOME! To stand out in those conditions, was going "above and beyond" what was expected! Now to the race itself. We all knew there was a very big chance of rain on race day, as well as rain several days before that. The 10-day forecast for St. Louis had been telling us that for 10 days! If you knew that and you knew the last 1/2 of the marathon course was through a low-lying flood plan area, operated by the Parks Service, why did you not have an alternate route set up through the city streets? There is always very little traffic early Sunday mornings and even less on a rainy day like that. You guys "blew it BIG time" and we all know it! Also, the race started 20 minutes late again this year. To make us stand around that much longer waiting to begin was another failure point. For the guy I met from California who flew in for his "Missouri Marathon" in his quest to join the "50 States Club," I apologize that my home state let you down! I know how much money I spent driving to the race and spending the night in a hotel. I'm sure your flight costs were much higher! Again, to the supporters and fans, you ROCKED! To the organizers, consider free entry fees to next year's race for all the folks you "let down this year." I know you had expenses anyway, but I'm sure you saved a lot of money on food, water, etc.

First marathon run in a hurricane?

I am sure the race directors heard from disappointed folks, but I think the race directors deserve HUGE credit for having the race at all. It was one of the most amazing races ever. The volunteers were absolutely OUTSTANDING. It's one thing to have paid for a race and get up and brave the elements, but the volunteers did it free, and in my opinion, they had to endure worse conditions than the runners. Wow. What an incredible experience. One thing that is inexcusable is the traffic tie-up at Riverport Amphitheater. I've never understood how you can have a venue like that with such terrible traffic flow. It's not the fault of the race directors, but I think there's a lot of places that could work better. Family Arena, maybe?

This was my sixth time running Lewis & Clark

This was my sixth time running Lewis & Clark (full marathons). Yes, it was terrible weather-wise, but as usual it was well organized with amazing volunteers standing out in the rain and wind to cheer us on and offer support. It was a big disappointment to have to stop after ten miles, but it makes for a heck of a story and I'll be back again next year for #7!

Fantastic Race Support

What can I say? The race organizers did the best job that anyone could do under the circumstances. Fantastic effort, guys! Any other race may have been canceled from the get-go, and then the runners would have had nothing to show for their money. The fact that we got 10 miles and medals was great. Anyone complaining should go talk to the three people who died from the storm and all the people who are now homeless! In the first half of the marathon the roads flooded out, and the second half of the marathon had trees that blew down across the trail. Tell me what the race organizers should have done. The best thought is that maybe they should have just stopped the race in its track and not given anyone anything. I think they chose the best option! This is hands down the best organized race around that cares about the people!

Run to remember

It was hard to see the course, since wind and rain were blowing in the runners' faces, but events like this really makes you a proud part of the brave outdoor community. Volunteers were incredibly brave. I saw someone holding a broken-by-the-wind stop sign in his hands. It's one thing to support runners on a normal day, and totally different to be on the course on a day like this one. I drank water given to me by volunteers, even if I had enough of it in my sleeves just to show how appreciative I am of their efforts. Yes, organization crumbled a bit under the stress, but it was not broken, so I give them 5 stars for that. When I came home after the race, I found that my entire street was flooded and I had to spend the rest of that day dealing with it. Thankfully I didn't run a full course. :)

Should get 0 stars for organization

I should have known this was going to be a disaster when I couldn't find the packet pickup: the directions on the website to the Ameristar were wrong, and once I got inside the hotel, there were no signs directing people where to go. The organizers knew the storm was coming and everybody in St. Louis knows that St. Charles lies in a flood plain (it's not like this is the first time St. Charles has flooded), so this could and should have been anticipated. Worst of all, I didn't find out that the race had been cut to 10 miles until I could see the finish line, after I had been running for close to two hours. Do the organizers honestly expect me to believe they had no way to get word to the runners before then? If there was no way to communicate with the volunteers on the course, doesn't that say something about the lack of safety at this event? What would they have done in the event of a medical emergency? The only good thing to say about this race is that the volunteers were incredible.

The bright spot of an unbelievable day

Okay, the weather was horrible and we were re-routed and pulled off the course at mile 10. Not exactly what any of us had planned. The volunteers and spectators were simply amazing - braving the elements with us to keep aid stations up and fully functional. There were lots of cheering spectators despite the torrential rain and 40 MPH wind gusts. A huge thank you to all of those folks. It felt a lot less daunting out there because of you. I would like to come back and give it a go on a less inclement day.

A Fiasco! Don't Waste Your Money!

First, I know the race director cannot control the weather, and there were very challenging conditions (the tail end of Hurricane Ike). But there are things the race director can and should control: shelter from the pouring rain before the race start, good traffic control and logistics for parking and runner drop off, timely start of the race (ESPECIALLY in adverse conditions!!), preparation for rerouting or adjusting the race course when bad weather (and possible flooding) is fully anticipated. Sorry... I know some will say nothing could be done to prevent this fiasco, but I disagree. The runners who showed up in these conditions, assured that the race would go on "rain or shine," and FINALLY were able to start running, should be allowed to finish. We enduring the pre-race misery, the late start, and the pouring rain and winds on the first 6 or 7 miles. And then the conditions improved: the wind died down, the rain lightened up, and the running was good! And at that point, at mile 10, everyone was routed to the finish line and told the rest of the race was canceled! This is inexcusable! The only thing positive I can say is that there were a good number of porta-potties on the course (a refreshing change!), and the hi-tech long-sleeved shirt is nice. Oh, and the volunteers were awesome! Imagine showing up in those conditions as a volunteer! This was to have been my 42nd marathon, and was by far the worst race management I have ever seen. The issues with parking at the race start have been documented here in prior years. It would appear NOTHING has been done to address them. That combined with a lackluster course, and the inability of the race director to deal with conditions, forces me to say, "Don't waste your money" on this one!

Running in Hurricane Ike!

Wow. There is no way to compare this to any other year - it was an absolute downpour and yet spectators came out! The race officials ended up diverting both the full and half to finish at only 10 miles because of flooded roads; while that was a little disappointing because of months of training, I completely understood. Plus, we all got a great story out of it. It rained the entire race, and the wind was a nightmare. Yet the aid station volunteers were FANTASTIC and upbeat, cheering us on. The medals are gorgeous, and I love the long-sleeve tech shirt. My only complaint is that the race didn't even come close to starting on time - we all froze in the rain waiting for the gun to go off. Other than that, it was a great experience and will be fun to talk about for awhile.

Race should have been canceled due to flooding

I have run the L&C Half Marathon twice, and this was going to be my first time in the full. I will probably not attempt a full again. First, let's start with the traffic and parking: every year it gets worse. I live at 5th St. in St. Charles - less than 3 miles from the parking/start. It took me 45 minutes to get parked, and I left home at 5:20 a.m. The parking needs to be improved or the time adjusted for the race. When I finally arrived at the parking lots in Riverport, parts of them were flooded and they were still allowing people to park there; I pulled way out and parked somewhere that was not flooded. When I returned after the race the water was halfway up my 33' mud tires on my Jeep, and others had water to their door handles in some areas. UNSAFE CONDITIONS. We should have been told when we arrived the race is off due to flash flooding, with rain coming down still. So the race goes on, and we start again - this year 15 minutes late - and the race officials started the race knowing the streets were flooded coming off of 370, cutting the race three miles short. Therefore, this was no longer a Boston qualifier for those running the full. If I would have known this, I would have never started the race to begin with. Why would an athlete who trains for this type of event put themselves on the line to get injured in these types of conditions, knowing the race will be canceled after 10 miles? I know they knew this when the race started because my wife was under the 370 underpass, waiting for me, and was trying to call my cell phone (which was in my vehicle) to let me know that they were not letting us run that stretch. So disappointing. Better luck next year, and maybe people will return after the disaster this year.

Amazing volunteers save drowning race

The remains of hurricane Ike hit the course with punishing winds and torrential rains, forcing an early end. The start was delayed 20 minutes for public safety reasons, while the runners huddled like pathetic refugees bearing the brunt of 30 mph wind and stinging horizontal rain. Those who stuck around for the impromptu start were rewarded by heroic dedication of race volunteers. Every aid station was fully manned and well-stocked by smiling, cheery (to us at least), soaking wet, wind-whipped volunteers - I have no earthly idea how they got water cups filled and kept them from blowing away (winds gusted to about 40 mph!), but these folks deserve GIANT KUDOS for getting out there when we were too stupid to stay in bed. Cheers too for the handful of spectators. The organizers cut both races short, finishing everyone at 10 miles, apparently due to flooding on the course (not a real surprise). I'm sure there will be a lot of griping (we waited for 20 minutes for the race to start with very little information and no shelter; we didn't find out that the race was called until we hit the last 200 meters, and some other failures of contingency planning), but hey, it was raining 2.5 inches/hour for hours before and during the race, and the winds wrought havoc. The finish line area was literally floating away - plywood boards near the food tables were floating like lily-pads. The conditions were so bad they were hilarious, and I ended up enjoying a (hopefully) once in a lifetime event. A friend walked into a chest-deep "puddle" near the start line (she got duathlon honors after "swimming" out). There were literally waves rolling through the flooded parking lot at the start line. I had a great Boston qualifying race here last year and loved the flat, fast course. I was hoping for a repeat, but today was just a freak of nature and hopefully next year will be back to normal. I'd give it another shot. Parking is a real hassle - access is limited to a couple of roads and cars were lined up to get in well after the start (same thing happened last year, though this year, flooding did play a factor). Arrive VERY early next year or fix the traffic issues.

Shortened by Tropical Storm Ike

I tried to run the 2008 Lewis and Clark Marathon but it got cut short to 10 miles due to tropical storm Ike. The morning greeted us with 5 inches of rain and wind gusts of up to 53 mph. This was what many called a 50-year rain in St. Charles. In spite of it all, race organizers did their best and we had smiling volunteers and everything we needed. Buses from the finish back to the start were plentiful. While it was disappointing not to do the full marathon as planned, continuing would have seemed ridiculous while area families were being stranded in flooded homes and cars. City and county manpower was needed for things other than this marathon. My hat is off to the organizers. Great job, given the circumstances. It really looked like a nice post-race party was planned. Too bad Ike ruined it!

Very Disappointing

This one at very bad weather at the start and the start was delayed 30-45 minutes, because we had to wait for the police. After about an hour and 15 minutes or so, the very strong winds stopped and the rain lessened. Then in another half-hour we were told that everyone was to stop after 10 miles. The rained stopped completely sometime around 11:30. Of course, it did not matter; I was off the course after running 1:53 and 10 miles. My feelings: why was an alternative not available to us or at to be able to complete the half? I have run marathons before that gave us and option of an alternate course. I have run 265 marathons before this one without once being taken off the course. My time and money will not be wasted here again. Since I was pulled off the course after 10 miles, I did not run the entire course, so I was not able to give a fair rating of the course itself. The fan rating may not be very fair either, since the weather was so poor.

No back-up plan when the course flooded

The 2008 run was cut short at 10 miles. The organizers knew that we could have a direct hit from tropical storm IKE days before it hit. Instead of a contingency plan, someone chose to shorten the run from a marathon to 10 miles. If we can come prepared to run, the organizers should be equally prepared to hold the event. Many runners wasted thousands of dollars on travel expenses to participate in this event. Water on the trail was a pitiful excuse to cut the event short. I will do a run in Missouri again, but I can assure you that it will not be this one.

Marathon 2008

This is one of the worst events that I have ever participated in. I asked several race officials if there is a chance that the race would be canceled, and they all assured me that that would never happen. The organization was very, very bad. We waited over an hour and 30 minutes to get to the parking lot. It was the most disorganized setup that I have seen. It poured and poured rain, and the wind was extremely strong. No one knew if the race would start or not. Finally they started the race and decided to cancel it at mile 10. This was not announced anywhere on the course, but on the very last 1/4 mile. They did not have any mile markers. An absolute mess! The finish area was extremely disorganized. Everything was covered with water and all the race bags were in the middle of it, with no one helping you find your bag. I would never recommend this race again. I did run the course in 2007, and it was not bad, but you have to be extremely lucky with the weather. The trail (miles 9-10) was under water, and this is why they decided that the race would be canceled. It would be nice if someone could check the course before the race is started. Missouri had plenty of rain in the spring of 2008 and I have hard time thinking that they could not check the course then and adjust it before the start in September. This is just not acceptable.

Still Traffic Issues

For the second year in a row the traffic was a complete mess. The problem is that the course crosses the entry of the cars. They desperately need to route the course around the traffic so that cars arriving late won't delay the race. Last year it was 15 minutes and this year it was 25-30 minutes while everyone froze and shivered with the rain and wind from Hurricane Ike lashing down on us. Unacceptable. If people can't show up on time, then tough. The race was shortened to 10 miles because part of the course was washed out (under several feet of water). I understand there's nothing that could be done about that. The weather was off-the-charts bad. I have to hand it to the volunteers who did a great job standing out in the horrible, horrible weather. The course is very flat and fast. There's not much scenery apart from crossing the Missouri River. There aren't a lot of fans. I run this race because it's close to home. I wouldn't travel too far for this if I didn't live in town.

IMPROVES WITH AGE

I have run this event every year since its start, and I look forward to it every year. Did the marathon in '02, '06, and '07, and the half in '03, '04, and '05. The organizers have consistently used participant feedback to improve this course. In 2007 there was even a river crossing! Still mostly flat, with the marathon offering about 15 miles on the finely-crushed gravel of the FLAT Katy Trail, but still enough topography and scenery to make it interesting. I'm running this year and, God willing, will be back in 2009!

My first marathon

This was my first marathon and I planned on walking it. The first half was great, but I felt like I was by myself for the second. (Granted, I was slow; I finished the whole thing in 7:08, but I still needed support.) The gravel part of Katy Trail went on forever. I ran the last bit to get it over with and there was someone there to take my picture; nice touch. I was not sure that would happen. There was nothing to snack on; everything had been put away and I was not the last one either. It would be nice after all that work for people yelling, "Way to go etc." I will do it again, but I will be running the 1/2. The course was not that good, going through the business area.

Good training marathon

I liked the trail basis for the last half, and I enjoyed the weather. I thought the organization was pretty spot on for a relatively small race. Not much of an expo, but that's expected.

Very good race

Traffic to the start line was almost a deal-breaker, but all other organization was excellent. Course was nicely flat, and for being functional, it was also pleasant enough. Industrial areas, yes, but they were clean and nicely landscaped. Crossing the Missouri River was a highpoint, literally and figuratively, with no other significant climbs on the course. Over 80% of participants ran only the half. The second half on dirt path was n-i-c-e on the legs, very scenic in many places, only a little lonely and exposed the half mile and back from the turnaround. Coming in on the last .2 miles, I would have preferred to see the finish line. I kept asking, "Where is it," while the crowd yelled, "You're almost there!!" The race may not be a big destination event, but it is certainly a more-than-fair value for the entry fee. If you want a good, safe course with plentiful support, at a somewhat odd time year, this one's for you. I'm glad I did it and will consider running it again.

A fantastic small race. Flat and fast!

The course was great and I ran a 5 minute PR and Boston-qualified. Granted, parts of the first half were not too exciting, but I am running, not sightseeing, and for running it hits the mark. The first half has a few bumps (can't even call them hills), but the second half on the packed gravel Katy trail is dead flat and soft on the feet, and shady. I really liked the out and back, as the people heading out gave great support to those on the the way back. Aid stations were very well organized and well placed. The parking and traffic at the start was a bit of a mess, but I stayed at a hotel walking distance from the start. The finish was well run and even later on at the closing time, was still stocked for the final participants. The organizers even ran to the store to make sure food was available to the late finishers. Most races simply tell you 'sorry, we're out!' The extra medal for St. Louis marathon finishers was a nice touch. The weather could be iffy in September, but was fine this year.

Great weather, flat course, good first marathon

This was my first marathon and I had a great experience. The course was perfect for a first timer like myself with virtually no hills and a second half on a trail (although this section was scarce on spectators). Aid stations were also great. Parking and the start were not an issue if you followed the instructions. Overall, a neat experience that I hope to do again!

Really appreciate the new course!

I am glad I finally came to the website to post a response after seeing some of the very negative comments posted. I have run the full marathon here once and the half marathon three times. The course change was very positive for runners and getting more people to participate in St. Charles. You could not have done a better job on the parking arrangements. On your website you posted a note for everyone to be in place by 6:30. That is when we got there and drove right into a parking space with NO issues. Anyone who was not there by that time should not have been allowed to race, as they did not follow your directions. Yes, the start was delayed for 15 minutes; I have a problem with that, as why should I have to wait for those people who do NOT follow directions? Please do the same thing next year. Getting the half marathoners off the Katy Trail helps due to the bike riders, who are still allowed to use the trail. I understand that the state of Missouri cannot close a complete park system for one event. By just the marathoners using the trail for the second half, there is less chance for injury with other people on the trail. The start was the first race I have run where the crowds of people were not an issue. I was able to start at an 8:00-minute pace and keep it through mile 8. Yes the views were, in some cases, industrial buildings, but they were clean and the roads were perfect. A lot of shade for long periods of running. The finish area does need a little work, by closing it off fully to non-runners. Again, the race event was fantastic. Keep up the good work as I am looking forward to next year when I am sure you will improve the minors things at the finish line. Thanks to all the volunteers - they were great.

A Ho-Hum 1/2 Marathon

This was my fourth Lewis and Clark 1/2 Marathon, and maybe my last. All on highway and through industrial areas, had to park seemingly 2 miles from where the race started, when there was ample parking areas where the race actually started. One of the most boring races I have run as far as scenery was concerned. Maybe I missed something? At the finish there was an extremely long line waiting for food and fluids. (I never did get any.) I sure hope this gets back to the arena for start and finish. IT was SOOOOOO much better then. (Note: I only do half marathons - 17 to date.)

Great weather, solid race

I ran the half, and I couldn't have asked for better weather. The course was flat and entirely road, a good chunk of it highway. There were well-stocked, long aid stations about every two miles. My family had some issues getting on a shuttle to the finish line, reporting that it took 45 minutes after the start for them to get moving. In the end, it was a nice race and I plan on running it again next year.

Horribly organized

This is my second time with the L&C (half), and this year was a disaster compared with 2006. A huge traffic jam 2-3 miles from the parking lot was apparently generated by the parking arrangement itself. Electronic road signs announced that the road leading to the lot would be closed long before the last of the cars in the congestion would arrive. After finally arriving and asking parking attendants whether the start would be delayed, we got responses like, "I have no idea. I just work for the St. Charles police dept." (Couldn't they have communicated?) So they DID delay the start by a whopping 15 minutes - not enough. Packet pickup was a mess (packets were apparently not boxed in alphabetical order). An announcement was made that the race would start in 1 1/2 minutes; then the gun went off about 30 seconds later. The course, at least for the half, was ugly as sin - every dump and waste site in the area seems to have been taken in. The signage at the end was poor - hard to find food and water (and water ran out way before the end of the race). What happened between 2006 (which was very well organized and a beautiful course) and 2007? This was my out-of-town friend's first exposure to the SL area. It will probably be hard to convince him to return. Another friend said that it was among the most disorganized of the 120+ marathons he's run. Very disappointing.

Probably wouldn't do this again with same course

This was my first time in St. Charles, MO. I'm impressed with the town, and there were definitely positives to the race, but also several negatives. I ran the half marathon only, so I can't give much commentary on the second part of the race (along the Katy trail), although I did go out for four more miles on that trail using this race as a training run for another race. What's good: -tons of shuttles to the start and back to the hotel -stayed at the Embassy Suites (host hotel) and it was fabulous -almost completely flat; I wouldn't even call the two or three inclines "hills" because they were so short and sweet -friendly volunteers -free long-sleeve technical shirt in packet!!!! (I'm so tired of 100% cotton) -letting half racers use the second half of the course for 'training' run -good variety of food at the finish and tons of water on ice -there were more potties at the start of this race than I've ever seen in one spot at any race! What was not so good: -CONCRETE STREETS!!! We ran on concrete for the first 8 miles. I've had IT band issues in the past, and this did not help. -I only saw two first aid stations, and only one was even manned -very congested finish area -saw children in the "athlete's only" tent enjoying the post-race food -not a lot of spectators -not a lot of scenery to look at, unless you find pastures and industrial districts engaging -race started 15 minutes late... and I could have used the extra sleep

Great race this year, but I didn't like the finish

I like the new course. It definitely handles the bigger group of runners. Would have like to run on part of the trail and could not see the finish line - turned the corner and there it was. A little too congested at the finish; it did not allow those who run a hard last quarter of a mile to really do so. BUT, big changes!! I look forward to next year!

Nice, flat course; perfect weather!

This was my second half marathon, and a nice race overall. Couldn't ask for a much flatter course. Coordination and volunteers were outstanding. Spectator support was scattered due to much of the course being interstate/highway miles, but these scattered folks were encouraging just the same. Post-race provisions were appreciated.

Flat, But Boring

The race was very flat, but also very boring. Very few spectators, only at the end of the race. The course changed to bypass a hill and run more into downtown St. Charles, but that was not the case. The course ran along the highway and the Kady Trail. They need to change their drink to Gatorade or PowerAde. The G2O or whatever is handed out tastes very watery; I had to take the water instead. Traffic was terrible arriving - not sure why they changed the start, the family arena was perfect. This was my third and final time running this race, unless the course and start change.

Lots of fun

Overall, a great course, great support, and lots of fun. Over 5,000 people ran, but only 850 for the full marathon. Be ready for crowded conditions at the start, but a very thinned out second half. Weather was very nice - 60-70 all day and cloudy. The course: The first half was a standard street course, starting at the concert pavilion in Earth City. Nice scenery, especially crossing the bridge across the Missouri River. Very flat; the only real hill was the on-ramp to the bridge. Second half was an out-and-back stretch on the Katy Trail - a railroad track converted to a gravel bike trail. Very forgiving on the feet, and pretty shady. The full marathon splits off right at the finish for the half, so watch your pace as the halfers push for their final mile. Support: Plenty of water and sports drink on the way, and plenty of great volunteers to hand it out, so no problems there. The out-and-back second half allowed them to use the same stations twice; with only 850 full marathoners this was plenty and no crowding. Crowds: Sporadic for the first half, some areas with nice little crowds, and long stretches with none. Second half had almost no spectators except for volunteers, but the out-and-back stretch meant plenty of support from other runners. Nice crowd at the finish. Even though 80% of runners did the half, they managed to keep plenty of food for people who finished later. Bad points: Around mile 6, cars were actually driving ON THE COURSE. Maybe add some better markings to keep runners on the left and cars on the right. Also, the start was delayed for 15 minutes due to "police request."

Bring back the hill

I enjoyed running over the 370 bridge during the first half of the course. I was grateful for the break from the pavement for the second half of the race. However, the out-and-back loop on the Katy Trail was very tough on the mind and the Greensbottom section of the Katy Trail is unimpressive. Why not bring back the 364 bridge hill during the second half of the course and either add more running through scenic St. Charles or add more running over the 364 bridge (using the paved Creve Cour bike trail for some of the miles)? Still, a great race put on by the Fleet Feet team!

Good run; flat except for one hill

I have run this course several times since its beginning. It has really grown in the past years, but the organization is still top-notch. Two things I would change: I think the field has grown too large to handle the trail section so I would move it onto the roads more. Also there should be a clock at the halfway point for the benefit of those who do not have stopwatches with them.

Great training run (half marathon) for Chi

This year I ran the half marathon to get ready for the Chicago Marathon. As usual, the setup and execution of the event was fantastic! My only issue was with allowing bike riders on the course. I don't know if Fleet Feet can stop them, but it was an issue; from the eight riders from an older generation that didn't know what to do with all the runners coming at them; to the high speed rider who ran head on into a runner (lady) just south of the Page Bridge. They both went down; I only hope she did not get hurt to bad and was able to finish the race. Something needs to be done to close the trail off to bike riders or move the race. No one should be getting hurt in a marathon! Please fix this issue before someone sues and stops the race for the future.

better this year

I ran the half again this year and though I thought last year was good, I think this year was better! It was very well organized from packet pick-up to parking; and there were more participants and there were more spectators this year. There were plenty of water stops and potties, and lots of food! My only complaint was the high humidity, but only nature can fix that! It also was a PR for me... it doesn't get any better than that!

geared towards the half

This is a nice, flat course, with a nice view of Saint Charles and the Katy Trail overlooking the Missouri River. It's a good starter course for anyone wishing to say they completed a marathon or half. Anyone looking for a marathon time will need to be disciplined enough to do it on their own, due to few runners or spectators for the second lap.

Good, low-key marathon

If you're looking for a change from the big blockbuster marathons, this is one for you. It features a two-loop, double-lollipop course. Apart from one "hill," it's all flat. My only small gripe is that the marathon and 1/2 marathon started at the same time. It did make it a bit difficult to work out who was doing what race. Also, with 90% of the entrants doing the 1/2, the second loop was a bit lonely :( Saying that, I'd do this race again. Great volunteers, and good organization. I even got to finish before the thunder and lightning....

Flat, friendly, easy on the legs, and has river vi

My 25th marathon and one of the nicer courses I've run. Very well organized. Plentiful water stations (ample availability of GU, Gatorade, and a few cookies too). Plentiful parking right at the start/finish in the arena parking lot. Real toilets in the arena and ample porta-johns on the route. Even beer and hot dogs at the finish. The course runs along the Missouri River. Out-and-back (twice for the marathoners). Scenic views of the river (mostly barges, some pleasure craft) and of historic St. Charles. Easy run; very flat, only two little hills. About 1/2 on pavement and 1/2 on fine-packed limestone trail (easy on the feet). The race starts on the roads so the pack thins out before getting on the trail. All in all, a nice, easy, well organized marathon.

GREAT Volunteer Support, Well-Run

I missed the music and the crowds of larger marathons, but the volunteer support and the marathon organization matched the best. This was my first time (2006) for this marathon. I didn't as much like running the same route over as a single-circuit route, but that's not critical for me and I'm sure it was easier for the spectators. Also, a very minor thing, but I noticed it - in every other marathon I've run (only 7), the medal person puts the medal on you rather than just handing it over; always makes me feel like a real champion.... And it was fun chatting with Dean Karnazes for a few seconds on the course.

I ran the half marathon this past year. The parking for this race was not very bad. The organizers told racers to be there at least an hour early so all cars could be parked in time. Many of those people who were running late did not get to the parking lot at the time advised by the race organizers. The course was primarily flat and the aid stations were plentiful. I would recommend this race.

Great First-Time Marathon

This was my first marathon and im really happy with this choice. The only issue was the traffic getting there. After that it was well run. There were not many spectators but the ones there were great. If you have friends and family that come to watch, this is a great course. My parents stayed at the start/finish line and were able to see me five times. My wife took her bike out and I saw her six times. That was better than a bunch of strangers. I will be back next year.

Flat and fast - perfect for personal best time

This was my second time running this race. Last year I did the half and this year I did the full. Both times I was able to achieve a personal best time. In fact, this is the perfect race to run if you're trying to qualify for Boston. The race was better organized this year than last; however there continue to be issues with parking before the race. I saw many people barely make it before the race started because the traffic was so bad. The drink stations were well positioned and organized (St. Louis Marathon coordinators take note!). Beyond the traffic, the volunteers were energetic and supportive and those spectators that were there made the most of it. I plan on returning sometime in the future.

A nice half

I ran the half and I must say it was very nice and we had no problems at all. Everything was fine and I loved the course! Loved running on the Katy Trail! The fans were few and weren't too enthusiastic, but I was! Will come back and try the full sometime.

wish there were more spectators

This was an okay marathon; however, I am the type to need big crowds to get through it. Marine Corps Marathon 2003 spoiled me for the need for crowds. The volunteers were wonderful, needed more porta-potties during the race (I think they there were only at three locations). St. Louis Ultrarunners Group (aka SLUG's) were wonderful, with cookies and water and many smiles! bod Bless the Hashers, who encouraged us with some refreshment at mile 24 or 25. It was worth the money, and I may do it again, next year. The weather was cloudy, cool and windy for the first 13.1 miles, but as I passed the half-marathon point, the heavens opened up, and it poured for about an hour. It was fun running in the rain. Overall, it is good for a small race.

This is a nice little race!

I have run this race twice and have been impressed with how well it is managed. As a back-of-the-packer, I am used to getting the dregs. However there were plenty of GU's at three different locations throughout the course, along with water and sports drinks. The photographers hung around to the bitter end. It is a lot of fun. There is regularly a problem with traffic at the beginning of the race that is irksome; otherwise it is great.

Excellent double-loop course

I'm typically not a fan of double-looping marathon courses but this one is really fun. The hill at the one end of the course is really a non-issue and helps break up the flatness of the course. The Katy Trail was hard packed dirt/gravel and soft on the feet. Lots of shade. Only downside is that if you're into lots of cheering, the course doesn't lend itself to much of it (which doesn't bother me anyway). The organization was excellent. Plenty of port-a-potties and water stops were top-flight. Didn't mind finishing outside and enjoyed the post-race beer and hot dog, which was different than the usual dull banana/bagel deal. Thank you to all the volunteers and Fleet Feet for doing such a great job. We had a blast.

Terrific fall marathon and half

Ran the half last year, and moved up to the full for '05. The folks at Fleet Feet did it right both times, from the easy packet pickup at the Chesterfield store (very friendly staff) to the enthusiastic finish line name announcements and nice t-shirt and medal. Decent post race food and massages as well. Some folks liked the arena finish from last year, but I preferred the outdoor finish of this year's race, to be honest...Course is pretty much pancake flat except for a 'slight rise' around miles 12 and 25. I do a great deal of my training on the Katy Trail about 40 miles west of where the race is run, so it is always a big morale boost for me when we leave asphalt and hit the trail. Having never run a double loop course before, I wasn't sure if I'd appreciate the 'knowing what lies ahead' thing, but I actually enjoyed knowing when the aid stops were coming up on the second loop. The volunteers were wonderful, and deserve major kudos for getting out there early and keeping us going. All the race planning in the world is meaningless without the volunteers to execute it! I live less than an hour away, but would make the time to do this one even if it was a destination marathon. Great job to all at Fleet Feet...see you in '06!

Nice course, but poor organization, logistics

This is a nice course for a 1/2 marathon. My problem was with the traffic and logistics. Following directions, I arrived at the the arena area around 6:00am. It then took an hour to get into the parking lot. Upon picking up my runners package, I was told not to worry , they had delayed the race start. I walked out of the arena, only to hear the starting gun sound. I also disagree with the location of the mile markers and course distances. Using a GPS, the mile markers appeared to be set-up based upon the previous year's start, at the other end of the parking lot. I measured the course at 13.3 miles instead of 13.1. In short, I like the course, but too many concerns to make me want to do it again.

Good Local Marathon

I last ran this Marathon in 2003. There have been drastic improvements since then. The starting shutes worked out great this year. Everyone was in the proper place to make for an enjoyable start for all. The water stops worked out fantastic. If only the St. Louis Marathon would follow your example for the water stops! Porta johns were located in the right spots. The arena worked out great having it open for the beginning. The ability for the restrooms there was great. Keep improving, I just hope that you start getting more full marathoners to participate. It really got lonely after the half guys disappeared. Keep up the good work Fleet Feet! The St. Louis Marathon needs to take notice.

poor traffic control before and after race

This is my 3rd time running the half marathon and 2005 was my worst experience with the traffic. Almost missed the start of the race trying to get there even though I was only 2 miles from the family arena at 6 am. Need traffic control as many cut in line for those that had been patiently waiting in a single file line. How about traffic police near exit 14? Ridiculous -- think I'll stick with the St. Louis marathon event in April which is much more organized and professional ( and better medals).

Great run, quick times, beautiful weather.

Great organization, plenty of fluid stations. They had GU available at several check points. One rough hill, but other than that a straight flat fast course. Ran this course last year and this year was just as nice if not better. Will run this course again next year.

Enjoyable event

This was my first full marathon but have participated in 2 others (1 full since then & 1 team). I enjoyed the variety of old St. Charles, Katy Trail, and a little road work. One pretty steep hill but not too long. Backside was a little warm without shade, but everything else was a enjoyable. Volunteers were great and fellow runners made it fun. Sorry to hear they changed the finish to be outside. I would have agreed that the Family Arena Finish was way cool! Hats off to Fleet Feet! Will run this one in 2005! PS: Actually witnessed a guy holding up a sign inviting his girlfriend to marry him (as she ran by - participating in the event)! Wonder how that turned out?

Flat, shady, and boring

This is an okay small marathon if you live around the area, but don't travel here from far away to run. If you do then you will be let down. The course is flat and runs through historic St. Charles during the first few miles, which is neat. Then it loops around and returns to the start on the MKT trail. The trail is shady but the spectators and aid stations are few and far between. At about mile 11 there is a large hill (short but very steep). Then you pass the starting line again before following the exact same route as the first half to complete the second half. Pretty boring! I would recommend this if you are looking for a personal best time because it is a flat and fast course.

2,500 half marathoners 450 full

Not a lot of shade. The 2nd loop needs to start around 6:15 to minimize sun. Loved Saint Charles. Let people in town know when the marathon is so they can come out and cheer for all the money we are bringing into the town.

Nice small run

Pros: I believe there were only about 400 marathoners. Nice to run on Katy Trail. Good to start and finish in the Family Arena. Great weather. Great crowd for a small race. Massages always a plus. Everyone seemed to line up at their expected pace. Cons: Had to carry a coupon for hot dog and drink (could have just put an X on the bib). Mixed: Not sure if I like the double loop. It was nice to know what was coming up the second time around, and I understand it makes the water stops easier, but I believe I prefer a single loop. Had to share Katy Trail with bicycles but they were polite. The trail could get pretty crowded when this event grows.

Nice and shady on the trail

The race/parking/post race were all well organized. If you need a crowd to cheer you on and get you to the finish this is not the race for you. No one in the town seemed to know there was a marathon even at the hotel we stayed at less than one mile from the start. I did enjoy the course. It was well marked and had good friendly support. I think all the race staff did a great job.

A Nice Experience

This is a well organized but pretty low-key event. It had a good number of participants - enough so I was never running alone, but not so many that I felt crowded. The course is nice. There are a couple hills, but nothing killer. I thought running 2 loops would be boring, but there's a welcome comfort in knowing exactly what's ahead when you get tired. Running on a dirt surface for about half the distance was nice on the feet. Finishing inside the family arena was unique, but I think I would have preferred finishing outside and having more room in the arena for the post-race food/celebration.

My Third Time!

I ran the half in 2002 and this was my first marathon last year in 2003. I just finished running it this past weekend for 2004 (my official fourth marathon to date!). A lot of changes were made that I liked! I liked ending in the St. Charles Family Arena -- lots of places for friends and family to hang out while they wait for me to finish! I liked the minor course changes, though I would have liked a clock and/or someone yelling out times in a few spots (I only noticed a clock at the halfway point as I started the second loop). The folks who organize the race are amazing -- but it would be cool if more folks cheered us on (though I would say that there were tons more people this year as compared to last year). I loved the one themed water station that I saw (Indians/Lewis and Clark theme?!). I like the posters I have gotten each year -- I usually hang them up in my cubicle at work! Parking was better this year though I wish there was a spot for people just to drop folks off (my fiance got caught in the parking lot and couldn't leave for an hour or so). BUT -- a friendly race! And as a soda drinker, I appreciated the Diet Pepsi waiting for me at the end (free coupon with entry). Flat course and quite scenic! The trail used happens to be a favorite running path of mine anyway! I suppose that this marathon will always be my favorite since it was my first! And the folks at Fleet Feet have always been so helpful in helping me buy the best shoes for my feet!

Small race/Treat you well

This was my 5th marathon, and the best orginization I have ever had. Loved the fact that you received water, drinks, food whenever needed. Not a lot of spectators, but the ones that were out were worth it. Loved jumbo screen in the Family Arena showing your finish. Very neat race to run!!!

Meduim sized, flat course and a good value!

I ran the 2004 new and improved run. It was a good medium sized event. The course is easy. So flat it is almost boring. I like to run in cities so I was bored. The past starting line parking lot issues that were reported here looked to be better, but bottom line: Folks need to show up early. If you miss the race because you showed up only 5 minutes before the start, it is your fault! (probably 1/2 marathoners :)) The indoor finish was great. So were the indoor bathrooms - no port-a-potties! Finisher's medal design is great, it just needs to be bigger! The whole organization was very good. It would be a great race if it actually ran through somewhere other than a suburban river trail. But it is a value. Pros: excellent organization, manageable size, cheap price, service with a smile. Cons: a bit boring, cheap medal, no finisher’s promo, lots of 1/2 marathoners.

Nice job in 2004

In contrast to the previous runner's posting regarding the 2003 marathon, I had a very positive experience in this year's event. This is a race that has seen dramatic growth in its limited 3-year existence and it seems to be coping well with it. The course itself is a two-loop affair with the half-marathoners dropping off after the first loop. While approximately half of each loop is run on roads, the other half is run on a shaded (and protected from wind) crushed gravel path with overhanging trees. Lots of aid stations, volunteers, and a memorable finish in the arena in St. Charles. The only hiccup in the entire day may have been the parking/traffic situation before the start. They are working on this and it will undoubtedly continue to improve next year. This is a good destination marathon with both the sights of St. Louis and the history of St. Charles able to be explored. Overall, I thought it was a very well planned and managed race and one that I will recommend to others in the '50 States' club.

Pretty darn good I'd say

First, hats off to all of the volunteers. Thanks a lot for coming out and supporting us. All runners should switch gears some days and be a volunteer. Also, hats off to Fleet Feet. Overall you guys put on a top notch race. No expo or pasta party, but a very affordable entry fee, decent shirt, poster, medal, etc. The best aspect was the perfectly placed aid stations and plenty of porta-johns. I loved running on the Katy Trail. Perfect grade, excellent surface, great shade. Not too crazy about the concrete or the bricks. Change that and I give the course a 5 star review. One big hill but at least it wasn't too long and the downhill was an great boost. Loved the finished line inside the air conditioned arena. I also made use of the pools of ice water that were devoid of water bottles to soak my tired dogs. Thanks! Thanks again for all your efforts. Overall, I would have to recommend this race. Good one for a PR or BQ attempt. Happy trails.

Lots of room (and need) for growth.

Did not like the organization. Before driving several hundred miles from Chicago, we confirmed with one of the race organizers that we could register on the morning of the race. When we attempted to do so, we were met with nasty attitudes. Two women in particular refused to believe that we had spoken with anyone and flat-out refused to allow us to register--even with cash. We finally located the person to whom we had spoken and he was honorable enough to confirm his directive for us to 'hop in the car and drive on down. It will not be a problem, just get here early,' which we did. We should have stayed home. I ran nine marathons in 2003, and this was the worst. There was sporadic placement of mile markers, with many missing altogether. Adding to the problem, there were no clocks or people giving splits on the entire course; only the halfway/finishing clock gave a time. To top it off, the medal was the cheapest that I have received in all of the races that I have run, including shorter distances. It is the only medal with a sticker for the year of the run. Give me a break! It was not all bad. The course was nice, even with the two loops. Keep the hills because the course is otherwise flat and uneventful. Be a bit more creative, however, and take out the hills (or at least part of them) at the end. The post-race events were wonderful. Finally, when someone drives hundreds of miles to run your race, try to be more pleasant, understanding and TRUSTING!

Wish more spectators would come out!

This is a good marathon, I've run it twice, and plan to do it again in 2004. The course is fairly flat and it isn't very crowded, which is nice so you don't have to try to run around people to keep up your pace. I would warn future runners to get there early because last year the traffic was so backed up that they had to postpone the start of the race. Other than that though, everything else was a positive experience. Nice weather, and good support.

GREAT 1st TIME or EASY EVENT!

Ran the inaugural marathon in 2002 and ran the half in 2003. St Louisans are now lucky to have a great marathon in the spring AND a great marathon in the fall. Enjoyed the historic downtown section, the tremendous finely crushed gravel and shade of the Katy trail and was even energized by the hills on the south end of the course. Spectators are sparse in areas along the course but there were ample aid stations and great shirts! Prefer single loop or point to point courses but for the price, this is the best marathon deal around!

Needs work, but has potential

Although still young, this marathon could develop into a gem. This race had WAY more entrants than expected, but it still went off relatively smoothly. Start was delayed to allow those stuck in traffic time to arrive, which I thought added a personal touch to it. The start, however, was too narrow and walkers MUST be moved to the back. I think the first mile took me 20 minutes. Once we got onto the road, it was smooth sailing. Loved the flat course, but hated the cobblestone street through downtown St. Charles. Talk about ankle busters! The section on the Katy Trail was smooth, fast and shady, which provided relief on a hot day. The hill at mile 10/23 was wretched, but rumor has it we won't see it in '04. I am not a fan of running two 13.1 mile loops, but hopefully the growing popularity of this race will allow it to expand its course. Water stations were depleted towards the end (and I didn't even run that slow!), but overall the support/aid staff was superb. Hanging out after the race, soaking my barking dogs in one of the many baby pools (great idea, regardless of hygiene!) you got a true feel for how personal it was. Long after most runners and walkers had finished, the announcer was still calling in every finisher. At one point, word had funneled back that one woman was having a hard time finishing, and needed everyone's support. The announcer gave us a heads up that she was coming and asked us all to cheer her on. Those of us still there gave it all we could, and to see this complete stranger finish, knowing the pain she was in, reminded me why I love this sadistic sport. Keep up the good work, Fleet Feet. See you again in '04.

Great, but the last hills are killers!

I have walked this race twice: 2002 and 2003. It is walker friendly and the medal is great! My only complaint is the hills at mile 10 or so... I wish it would have come early, since as a walker I had about had it at 10 (smile). I would definitely do it again.

Great race for my first marathon

This course was great for a first time. My only complaint is with the start. I tried to line up in the middle of the group as I was planning on a pace around 4:30. To my dismay, there were many walkers in the front, walking together not allowing anyone to pass. It made for a very slow start with the walkers up front in the narrow lanes. Hopefully pace start groups will be available next year to get runners lined up to start per their projected pace time. Starting in the middle of the group, we were not able to hear that they were even starting the run until people in front of us started to move. The speaker was not positioned so that we could hear it as the start was delayed a couple of times to allow people to get there (due to a backup in traffic). I will definitely be running this again as the course is great and the spectators were outstanding. The food, port-a-potties, etc. were set-up very well. Please keep improving, as this will become one of the better races around!

Excellent Boston Marathon Qualifier!

This is the second running of the L&C Marathon. Last year was the first running; it was my fall marathon. Personal opinion: The course is a burner. 1/2 on the hard-packed Katy Trail (rails-to-trails, flat as a pancake), the other half on Olde Towne St. Charles streets, also with no hills. The only HILL (that is singular) occurs coming off the Katy trail to transition to the streets. It is a two-loop course. Great support, there is a Fife-and-Drum core to send you off, only a few cars on the streets, 58 degrees and low humidity (last year). If you are looking for a great time, I had it here. Last year there was 1,500 in the marathon and half. This year there should be right at 2,000. This was my 30th marathon/ultra-marathon.

Great local event!

The friendly folks at Fleet Feet Sports are to be commended for a great inaugural race last year (2002). For a local event without the fanfare of a major marathon, organization was superb, and the food at the end was probably better than the larger St. Louis Marathon in the spring. Plenty of water stops and GU. (Historic??) St. Charles Town isn't much to work with (i.e. running past a garbage dump), but the Katy Trail portion is a flat, very comfortable surface. I think that will be the bulk of the race in the future? Fans were few but enthusiastic. Unlike the big time races, it was really homey to have family and friends with you right at the finish. Having the race situated three weeks before the Chicago Marathon was terrific for training. I look forward to continuing participation each year to watch it grow better and better!
