Smallish suburban race, rolling hills

This marathon is back with a new sponsor and course changes after the pandemic hiatus. The course has been tweaked to include an out-and-back and a loop in the Mississauga City Centre development at the start and to remove one unpopular downhill / uphill section closer to the end. There's also small route changes in the middle, but the start and finish are still in the same spots and it's still a point-to-point net downhill course. It starts at the Mississauga City Centre with large residential towers and a massive shopping mall, runs through nicer suburban and parkland areas when not on major roads, and finishes at a lakeshore marina. There is still one dusty industrial stretch in Miles 17-19 which could use some improvement. There's plenty of rolling hills after a significant downhill early on, but there are also long flat stretches. The race is relatively well organized for a smaller suburban event. Water stations are spaced too widely, though they were better served this time by cheerful volunteers. There are multiple timing mats and checkpoints. Roads are not fully closed and at one point involve running in a very narrow coned-off lane next to traffic, but overall traffic management at intersections was good, with runners given priority. There's a fair amount of shared bike/pedestrian paths closer to the finish which could get crowded. No expo to speak of at the number pick-up, but plenty of food and liquids at the finish and a comfortable coach transportation back to the start where most runners park their vehicles. Spectators aren't numerous except at the start and finish, but there's a few loud official cheering stations, and overall it seemed like people were into it more than previous years (e.g. a few neighbourhoods have set up their informal water/cheer stations). I would recommend this as a spring race in the Greater Toronto area; it compares very favourably with the poorly organized springtime Toronto Marathon, but does require a trip to the suburbs.

Very well organized for a smaller marathon.

Weather was good. Organization was excellent. The course was 70% scenic (posh neighborhoods and bike paths) and 30% busy streets, but overall I liked it. My only complaint is that the race t-shirt was cotton, not technical, and all it had on it was the marathon's website URL. No images, sponsors, not even the year of the race. Not attractive at all. The medal on the other hand was the largest I've ever seen.

Friendly and fun

I ran Mississauga in 2007 as my very first marathon, and managed to qualify for Boston there. In the intervening years, Boston has become my spring marathon. But this year I did Mississauga, and it was wonderful to return to the 'scene of the crime' so to speak. The weather was ideal, with a start-time temperature of 10 Celsius, and little wind. As the hours wore on, the temperature rose by a few degrees, and the wind increased a bit, but if anything the headwind was appreciated as a cooling factor. The first 5k are unremarkable, along Burnhamthorpe road, a typical commercial street, but closed completely to traffic, which is good, since the half marathon (around 1800 participants) and the marathon (around 800) all go out together. Then you turn south and the scenery is very pretty along Mississauga road. At 16k, the half marathoners head out toward the finish line and the full heads west. Kilometres 20 to 28 are in an industrial area and mentally can be the doldrums. It's an out and back, so you can see the runners ahead of you and behind you on the course as you cover this stretch. I saw the lead woman just exiting the small lakeside park, on her way back in, as I was still heading out. Gels are supplied at 17km and 32k-ish. Nice to have a couple. Water stations can be as much as 4km apart, but are well-organized and supported by enthusiastic and efficient volunteers. On a hot day, you might want to carry your own fluids. The last 14k dips several times between lakeshore road and the lake, and is very pleasant and scenic, with pretty residential areas, a (mostly paved) path right along the lakefront, and some minor hills before things flatten out completely at 38k. One thing that was a really pleasant surprise was the amount of spectator support, cheering stations and some musical entertainment. As well, this is the first and only marathon where I've seen the traffic-control police smiling and clapping and cheering as well. Marathoners be aware that you share the first 16k of the course with half-marathoners, plus there is a 5x8km relay for the marathon, so don't let yourself get sucked into racing those who are covering shorter distances. The finish line is at the end of a spit of land that curves out into Lake Ontario. The finishing chute was very efficient. Kudos to the organizers and the city of Mississauga for creating a really pleasant race experience.

99th Marathon! Race is starting to slide

This was my 99th full marathon! Last year I felt the race expo was just 'there' and was a bit let down by the overall race experience. This year they had water stations every 4k for the first half and moved to ever 2k. If the race was going to cut the budgets water stations is not a good place to start. Well organized in terms of the buses, etc., but the volunteers at the arena (where I dropped off my car) did not know I would have access to a warm shower after. I live nearby and will continue to support the race but they have to set priorities and runners like access to fluids during a race! Great to see so many local runners at the race though.

Well organized event

This is an excellent, well organized event. The expo is old school with so many interesting booths and products. Package pick up is effortless and The shirts are always nice with a variety of sizes. The marathon course is not as well thought out as the half, and I will admit I enjoyed running the half course more than the full. Also, the full course definitely has more hills going up than the first half of the course. However, overall the medals are beautiful and the course support was great! Big shout out to the enthusiastic announcer at the finish line. This is a must do marathon especially if you are a first timer. They really make you feel special.

My 81st marathon! Woo Hoo!

I have run races from here since it started in 2004. I felt now as I do now that it is Canada's best kept secret. The expo features plenty of freebies compared to others I have been to this year (including TO Goodlife). That being said the expo seemed a bit of a let down this year. In the past I got a free bag of soil there now I did not. To paraphrase the experience it is like having Mayor McCallion speak prior to the race start and having Mayor Crombie speak. Apologies to US runners. There are aid stations every 2 km. The course features a net downhill with plenty of rolling hills. It was a cold and wet race this year with strong winds near the end. There seemed to be less volunteers and the gels were gone by the time I got the stations. The medal was nice but I had to track it down myself since the volunteers were handing out 2 k medals. I saw some 2k finishers taking the full marathon medals and taking lots of food home leaving less for full marathoners. More volunteers could stop that. The shuttle buses were good and free. Lots of maniacs and fanatics present which is good especially during a Canadian race.

67th marathon! Why are you NOT doing this race!!

There is a reason I keep coming back to this race. The expo was amazing. Lots of goodies (Cold FX, sunglasses, lots of free food, etc., - even soil!), lots of volunteers and easy bus service from start to parking lot. This is one of the better races in North America and I still shake my head as to why they run it on the same day as the TO marathon. Maybe one should move to the second weekend so we get a marathon every weekend for the first three weekends in May in the GTA? Great to see so many maniacs that run this race.

55th Marathon! Canadian Race Directors take note!

This is a very well organized course. Porta potties every 2k with water stations, lots of volunteers and an excellent race expo with lots of goodies. I did this race when it started in 2004 and I was impressed then. I think the other race in TO should schedule theirs on a Saturday and do a double in the city. A good race for beginners. The only complaint was the lack of parking at Square One for runners.

Nice small friendly race

Well organized and fun small marathon race. With proper training and weather on your side BQ`s are possible. :) pros -nice t-shirt -plenty of water stations -good post race refreshments (incl. chocolate milk and hamburgers) cons -course has some decent rolling hills (noticeable in the last 15k) :)

46th Marathon!!!

My 46th marathon! This was the tenth year of the race and it is easy to see why the race is so popular. It is very well organized and the race kit was filled to rim with goodies including soil! The shirt was nice but I think after running 42.2k I would want everyone to know. The yellow colour begs for Charlie Brown zig zag. Really. The course was pleasant and there were plenty of water stations (every 2k). The station at 6k and 4k had trouble stocking water for the runners which was a bit disappointing. More adult supervision needed is my guess as I didn't see any around. Plenty of power gels and porta toilets as well. My only complaint is the booking on the same day as the Goodlife TO marathon. A week apart would work for me but and even better idea is to have the races a day apart - A Maniac challenge! The coolest part of the race was having the race announcer say that I was the happiest and most charismatic runner on the course. He gave away my secret weapon - JOY!!!

loved it, only one beef

one of the most fun marathons I have run. They had it all. Loved the road runner song at the start. Course is a point to point course with a net downhill. Only beef is that after the race and after you have cooled down, they make you walk 2k UPHILL to get to the cars/busses.

Could do better.

I ran this race last year and this year and this year watched an a spectator. It was a shame to hear about the course problems such that 2 of the lead runners had to be disqualified and a number of the masses missed a section of the course.

Good course, VERY poorly marked and organized

Everyone has been talking about the top 2 finishers being disqualified, and that is indeed tragic. I take it no one has noticed, however, that there is a 16-minute gap between 2nd and 3rd, where other runners were also disqualified for going off-course. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! I hope those runners are getting a bit of justice in this whole thing too. To train that hard all winter long and not even post a time because the course is so badly marked is just awful. The organizers have a great course and the volunteers at the water stations were very enthusiastic and helpful. Mississauga could have a great race on its hands, but until the basic organization of the event is under control, they're going to suffer, especially if Toronto continues to run the same weekend.

nice course

A very nice course mostly through neighborhoods and along the water (luckily the 30 mph winds were at our backs for the first 16 miles). Definitely more downhills than up. Spectators were pretty much absent, and it was very tough for family and friends to follow us because of all of the road closings. Water stops every 2K were excellent. Enthusiastic and plentiful volunteers. The same old problem with slow half-marathoners blocking the bike paths and pedestrian bridges along the waterfront near the end. Nice finish area: live music, and lots of food and beverages,(unfortunately because of the cold, rainy wind, I think most took off quickly). There were about 1,200 marathon finishers, and when the half marathoners split off at 8 miles or so, you had as much space to yourself as you wanted.

Not to be overlooked

Overall it's an excellent small marathon worth considering if you're in or visiting the Toronto area. I would highly recommend this race. I would highly recommend this race. This is a coarse you can run a fast time. While the scenic course is technically downhill theres just enough geographic diversity to act as a challenge. The only negative related to the coarse is the paths you run along toward the end of the race. As a marathoner you had to keep your head up looking for half marathoners walking home after their race on the course. Those runners should know better. The enthusiastic aid stations were well placed and it was great having 3 Powerbar gel stations. Keeping in mind it was a cool, wet and windy day the crowd support was minimal but on this course it didnt seem to be such a big deal. Being a point-to-point race, I was lucky to have someone drop me at the start and pick me up at the finish but from what I saw Mississauga transit had plenty of nice new comfortable busses to transport runners and spectators to the parking areas so no one was left waiting outside getting cold.

More course problems this year

I have run this race in 2009 and 2011. The course was back to its original layout after unsuccessful changes in 2010. However, course problems remained. Top two finishers were DQd this year after their lead cyclist missed a turn, and a lot of GPS devices measured .1 of a mile short (160 to 200 m short). There were not enough marshals and volunteers, and the course was poorly marked on park paths in the second half. Park paths are also narrow, and faster marathon runners run into slower half runners and walkers at approx. 38K, which could cause problems. Due to lack of traffic control, my 3:15 pace group approached the 25K turnaround from the wrong side of the road, and had to cross paths with slower runners to get back on course. The expo was well-organized though fairly small. Aid stations were plentiful, but there were fewer volunteers likely due to rain, so I missed a few cups. Finish area was adequate though far removed from shuttle buses and any local attractions. Generally, I believe this course has a great downhill first half, poorly laid out and marked second half, and a finish area that is too far to be truly welcoming. I will likely not run it again until these problems are resolved.

Swag! Amazing Aid Stations! Good Race

My 29th Marathon! Here is what I liked: 1. Great Stuff in registration kit - even with the bad economy still lots of goodies 2. Aid stations every 2 km - amazing with porta potties to boot 3. Free parking Dislikes: 1. Parking volunteers didnt know where the start of the race was. Bad. 2. They closed off the parking in front of the Walmart which is more central and close to the start 3. Some of the porta potties ran out of toilet paper 4. Why schedule this event with another great marathon only 30 minutes away? Space it out two weeks away or something. Sheesh. Well worth doing. Mississauga Marathon needed more buses

My main complaint for the 2010 marathon was the lack of public transit (or at least public transit information) in the City of Mississauga! Most if not all people had to take a taxi or - dare I say it - drive, especially when the city has a population of 700,000. After finishing the race none of the volunteers reminded me that I had to take off my chip until I asked them for the area where the food and massage area was. Then I wasn't able to get a leg massage because it closed about an hour after I was done with the race. I know these races last up to 6 hours and I was done at 4:42:58! Imagine not being able to walk or bend down and being told to more or less suck it up because they have to leave early. Remember, I just ran a marathon. I shouldn't have to deal with bad planning afterward. Overall, it could've been a lot better if transit service was shown to be at the port credit location on the map instead of the park near Cawthra and Lakeshore for shuttle buses (which was given to me on expo day and could've been fixed). Volunteers were great at the aid stations but the finish line definitely was crammed at the end, as I was a sprinter. There was even one aid station that was offering up Advil, which helped me through the race!

Beautiful course!

I really enjoyed this race even though I ran like a dope and crashed and burned after 30K The course is very scenic; those really aren't hills on that course; the water stops seemed to be around every corner; and the spectators were very cheerful and supportive. Mississauga's downtown had this other-worldly Matrix-like look to it in the morning light... very cool. If you go next year, stay at the Waterside Inn. The owners have converted an apartment building into a "boutique hotel," whatever that means. You can get a suite with a separate bedroom, fireplace, 6 appliances in the kitchen, hardwood floors and a balcony for $10 more a night than the Westin, and it overlooks the finish line. There's a posh resto on the first floor, but The Pumphouse Grill across the street made an excellent post-race burger, and the Irish Pub up the street has got a genius in the kitchen - the salmon special with mango salsa was brilliant. Oh yeah, did I mention that the race was fun too?

I Wore a Blue Lucha Mask!!!

This was my 22nd marathon. The course was pretty and the spectators were pretty nonexistent. I preferred last year's course. They ran out of Gatorade at 4K, but they did have it at all of the other stations. The three power gel stations were a nice touch, but they need more than one Vaseline station. The final water station could have used more porta-potties (just had one!). Also: More buses for next year, better swag (like in previous years) and less restrictive parking to make it as good as it could be (or once was).

Great for the first 17K, then just okay till 21.

I actually did the half marathon, and I normally do triathlons, so I don't really have much to compare it to. The course was beautiful and mostly downhill, as stated, except for a little hill at 10K, which was fine. My only complaint about the course was that it wasn't very challenging, but I guess that can be good or bad, depending on your personal preference. The neighborhoods were lovely, and the day was beautiful. I would have liked to have seen more spectators, but what can you do? The waterfront section was spectacular and really picked up my mood and pace. I brought my own drinks with me but was running very low around 17K. I had decided to get a drink there but found only two or three people struggling to keep up with the demand for both water and Gatorade, and they had none out at all. Some of the earlier stops had had about 30 people, so that was not so good. I didn't stop, thinking I could get a drink at the finish line. Well that's where the problems really began. The bottleneck at the finish line was fierce. We were crowded together like sardines, on an increasingly warm day, all of us having just completed a long run, and there was no water in sight! Very poor planning there. If we had to wait in that hot throng to get through, then someone should have organized water in that area. Better yet, they should have had it open further to allow people to get out. I'm sure some people must have had a pretty hard time there, physically. It wasn't pleasant. Those conditions could definitely send a dehydrated person over the edge, possibly even into heart failure. Not good. So, having finally gotten through, got some water, found the food and lined up for ages to get it, all was fine until I tried to find my way back to the start line for my car. No one seemed to know where the buses were, and when I finally saw a sign way off beyond the general area and followed it to the bus station, I found a very, very long lineup in the hot sun. Again, no thought to possible dehydration. I don't know exactly how long I waited but it was about an hour. And I was one of the luckier ones. As I got closer to the buses the line seemed to increase exponentially behind me. Apparently the number of buses was cut down this year even though the number of participants went up. Two poor people on my bus had to get the driver to stop and let them out to throw up, and I'm sure the long, long wait in the hot sun did not help them any. So all in all, it was a great day, and I got a good PB (although I take it with a little grain of salt, considering the easy course), but I would have to advise the planning committee to seriously rethink the finish area.

A fast track in an up-and-coming city.

The race itself was fantastic, consisting of a fairly fast course through the urban and city environs of Mississauga and finishing along the waterfront. For those that are used to running in miles, the kilometer postings come a little quicker, thus giving a little mental relief when the wall hits (even if it's just an illusion). The big screen at the start is a great touch, allowing all of the runners to see the start line activities. The expo was fine, and no extra large race merchandise was available, but all in all, I had a great experience. If you are looking for a fast spring race, don't overlook this classy event.

Great Race!

This is a great marathon. It is just the right size and the course is mostly scenic. The water stops are plentiful and well-attended by very enthusiastic volunteers. The only problem was with the expo. I don't know if it was the organizers or the runners who didn't quite get it. The line to get t-shirts was out the door when all that needed to happen was for people to get their bibs/chips and move to the t-shirt table. The problem was exacerbated by this packet pick up/t-shirt area being located in a very long, narrow corridor. There was also a rumor circulating that if you did not scan your chip, it would not work. We all know that scanning the chip is simply to make sure that the chip you were given is the chip you have been assigned. That's it for complaints. If you want to run a fun and fairly easy course, this is the race for you.

Nice, Fun Race!

My 18th marathon! I high-fived everyone I saw, and the few fans were great. Good volunteers, and lots of porta-potties and aid stations. The final finish area was a bit narrow, but it was still a good experience. Free parking was also nice. Maybe they can start the race at 7:00 next time. The box of chocolates in the race kit was nice as well.

Great race with a few growing pains.

Most of the course was scenic, except for the 5K next to the oil refinery. Most of the organization was very good, except that they ran out of Gatorade at the first two aid stations, and had no clear info on the pasta dinner at the expo (not even 60 minutes before it started at the site of the dinner), so we missed Bill Rodgers speaking and ate elsewhere. Although I was pre-registered, the line for those who were not was very long at the expo, and there seemed to be only one person who could answer questions or register people, creating quite a bottleneck. After the race, the shuttle buses going back to the starting line or finish line parking lots were not marked, so in our post-marathon mental fog, we ended up on the wrong bus. The host hotel was very accommodating of late checkout. The race staff, sponsors, spectators, and community were all very supportive and enthusiastic. Overall, a very good race that I highly recommend.

Very Good

This was my first time running Mississauga (my 2nd marathon), and I picked it because I wanted to run a spring race. There were many many positives: - the course was as advertised (fast, with a few rolling hills; I found the incline at the 10KM more challenging than the one at the 31-32KM mark) - water stations were well stocked and consistent (Gatorade first, water second) - the start was very organized and not too crowded - not a ton of spectators, but the ones that we out were great - the after-race snacks were good (bagels, water, Gatorade, granola bars, crackers, fruit) - the hotel was only a 5-minute walk to the start line - shuttle/bus service was decent - the expo was a little cramped but I really liked the race t-shirt; I usually wear a small or extra small, but the medium fit just fine Two negatives: - the path to the finish narrows considerably and while this didn't affect me personally, I can see how racers looking to sprint to the line could be prevented from doing this if there's a crowd heading towards the finish; maybe widen it just a bit? - better spectator control, especially near the beginning of the race; for some reason, the officials/police let spectators dart in between runners and cross the road... runners are going a lot faster than they look, and around the 3KM mark, I nearly slammed into a guy who was trying to cross the street Overall, this was a great race and I'd run it again.

Overall a great experience

This was my 1st marathon. The start is well organized and it appeared that the runners seeded themselves according to the signs. Nice, wide start area, and overall a good course. Played the national anthem - way to go!!!! Great volunteers; they all cheered and called runners by name (from the bib). Aid stations were plentiful, well stocked, and every 2 KM - as advertised. Gel stations were also as advertised. Course was well marshaled, with police everywhere.... Overall, I would recommend the run. Only 3 negative comments: 1) The pasta dinner is a ripoff - $30 and there were no dinner rolls, no coffee/tea after. Just pasta and salad - not even spoons on the table. Terrible. 2) Not much schwag in the bag - mostly paper. 3) But the worst safety issue to me was the runners on the course with babies in strollers - clearly a no-no according to race rules, but the marshals allowed it to go on. This is wrong. Who is going to look after that child if the runner has a problem and faints? Not to mention the stroller is a hazard to other runners. Enforce your rules - pull them off the course!

Well org.; great course - net downhill and scenic

Great course, good start time, course has a good variety of scenery, and good timing (i.e. early/mid May). Good post-race snacks. I qualified for Boston on this course in 2007, so I would highly recommend it! I had previously run 2 half marathons on this course, which were great too! Go for it!!! - Marilyn

Great, but not for sub-3:00

Overall, it is well organized. The only concern, and granted this applies only to the sub-3 hour runner, is that the last 5 - 8 KM are spent weaving your way through the 1/2 marathon walkers. I'm all for anything that gets people outdoors and active, but the faster runners should not have to navigate around so many people on narrow paths. If the two races were separate, it'd be better; but the course itself is excellent, support is excellent, and overall atmosphere is excellent. There must be a better way to coordinate both events so that the leaders are not affected by the 1/2 walkers.

A+ on all the important stuff

The course is overall quite fast but the hills in the last 15KM of the full will thwart any late sprint you may have in mind. If you can negative split here, you can do it anywhere. Aid stations were well located and well stocked. Distance markers were easy to spot and seemed accurate. Roads were closed to traffic in both directions and you had to look long and hard just to find a car anywhere. Finish line medical was efficient and professional, with physio and medical tents well staffed. If it's raining at the finish there could be a lot of miserable people, as there is no shelter. Other than that, I have nothing but good things to say about this race. If you're in it to race a marathon, you will not be disappointed. All of the essentials are well taken care of. If you're looking for entertainment, gourmet food, and gadgets, stay at Square One shopping center at the starting line.

Amazing Course and Fans

The Mississauga Marathon 2007 was my third marathon and now I understand why it's Canada's fastest-growing marathon. The course was spectacular, running along trails and through waterfront parks along Lake Ontario. Having already run the Ottawa Marathon and Athens Classic Marathon, this marathon should not be missed. The finish line in the marina was truly amazing. My goal was to bring 3:30:00 - I brought 3:19:00 and was very satisfied with the course!! I would recommend this to first-time marathoners or those trying to achieve Boston qualifiers.

A PB Course in Mississauga

I was very pleased with the 2007 Mississauga Marathon. The course was attractive and virtually flat. There were plenty of well-stocked aid stations manned by enthusiastic students who cheered me by name. The expo was better than expected. The shirt was nothing special - very large - but at least it's a technical fabric. Race morning was a perfect temperature and the start area was easy to navigate with ample signage and lots of porta-potties, which had hand sanitizer - nice touch. The massage afterwards was very welcome and the bus transport back to the start was efficient. If I was looking for only one race in Ontario, I'd pick Ottawa for the whole race weekend in a smaller city atmosphere but Mississauga is doing a great job with its event. I do not hesitate to recommend it. It's definitely a PR course.

Improving; good enough for a 4-year-old race.

I ran the half-marathon. (+) Nice technical race shirt. (+) Decent number of runners - 1,400 for the full & 3,600 for the half-. (-) Very sparse crowd along the course, probably due to very cold (4C/40F) 7:30 a.m. start. Organizers should recruit more volunteers or cheering squads from Mississauga's schools, civic and ethnic communities. Or at least encourage more people living along the course to bring out their boom boxes (some did, thank you!). (+) Nice half-course, going through the beautiful neighborhoods along Mississauga Road and the Univ. of Toronto Mississauga campus. (-) I remember only one race clock along the half-course. It would be nice to have them every 5K at least. (+) Kilometer markers clearly visible. It would be nice to have occasional mile markers for metric-challenged Americans. (+) The last few kilometers along Lake Ontario were nice too. (+) Adequately manned fluid stations. (-) Race photographers. I didn't see a single Brightroom photographer. (-) The last 3-4K were run along a narrow path. I could picture the full marathoners frustrated with the slower half-runners. (+) But the last hundred meters or so are at least now fenced in, protecting runners from wayward spectators. (-) Post-race area. I had a hard time finding the "Family Reunion" area, which turned out to be a truck. They should post a race volunteer near the finish who can give info/directions. (+) The finisher medals are nice.

One To Consider Adding To Your Race List

Having read the comments for previous years, I must say I was very impressed with this race. The race organization from start to finish is, simply put, excellent. Plenty of parking at the start, porta-johns as far as the eyes could see, well marked baggage vehicles, well marshaled and marked start area, and the list goes on. The route was well marked off and wide enough in the early stages to avoid the inevitable zig-zagging usually experienced when trying to find open running space early in the race. Some comments from previous years had a negative impression of the waterfront park trails in the final kilometers of the course or of the brief stretch near the 25 KM turnaround in an industrial area. I didn't find the trails to be too narrow or congested, and the industrial area was one of the greenest "carbon zones" I've ever been in. The short stretch where we were running along runners who had made the turn and were headed back toward the waterfront was far from demoralizing; I had so many of the faster runners wish me well as they headed past that I took inspiration from that portion. The finish area was well marshaled and organized, with race officials pointing out to the half marathon walkers who were doubled or tripled up on the pathway that there were marathoners coming up from behind. I experienced no slowdowns on my way to posting a time only 33 seconds off my PB. Having my name on my bib was another high point, as was the finish line announcer calling my name and hometown over the PA as I crossed the line. The finish area was well laid out as well with plenty of water, bagels and such to go around. Race results were quickly posted and easy to find. A previous entry had made mention of a poorly controlled baggage area. At this year's event, they again had the bags laid out on the ground in order of bib numbers with plenty of supervision. As I approached to look for my bag, a nice young man approached me with my bag in hand and offered his congratulations on my race. This race was enjoyable from start to finish, good expo, great route, wonderful spectators who made me feel like I had my own fan club out there, and, to top it all off, excellent weather. No complaints whatsoever with this year's edition of the race, I had so much fun and such a wonderful overall experience that I'll put this one in my "Must Do Again" book for the next time I'm looking for a good spring race. BZ to the organizers and volunteers; this is a race which seems much more mature than its four years would indicate.

First-class race

I ran the 2007 Mississauga marathon as both my first ever marathon and as an attempt to qualify for Boston. Happily, both goals were accomplished. I cannot say enough good things about the race. Obviously, the picture-perfect weather was a big plus, but from the pre-race amenities to the post-race facilities, Mississauga was about as perfect as you could ask for. I drove the course a few weeks before the race and there was already signage up along all of the roads, indicating closure dates and times. Nearby Toronto is plagued by unhappy drivers dealing with road closures and Mississauga seems determined to avoid this conflict by letting everybody know where and when things will be happening. The race expo was well done and well organized. On race day, there were plenty of port-a-johns, a first-aid station for taping/bandaging, and even a suntan lotion station. Racers were asked to seed themselves according to expected finish times, and did so in a very orderly fashion. The gun went off right on schedule. There were aid stations every 2 kilometres, police officers stationed at all intersections, and first aid stations manned by the wonderful St John ambulance people all along the course. Volunteers were out in force and were incredibly enthusiastic, organized, helpful and encouraging. There were even people acting as bike escorts, riding alongside the runners (not 'a' specific runner, but all of us, any of us needing help). As a runner, you felt like help was at arm's reach every step of the way, a big plus for a first-timer. The spectators too were wonderful, with some of them setting up their very own aid/music/cheering stations. The course itself was for the most part pretty and scenic; the real estate is something to contemplate. There is a stretch between 20 and 28 kilometres that is a bit industrial, but even some of that takes you right along the lake. The last part of the course is challenging; the 'downhill' aspect of the course is really in the first 15 kilometres, and after 30km every little hill hurts. Fortunately we were not dealing with a strong wind off the lake as was the case in 2006. The last few kilometres of the course are quite beautiful, winding through lakefront neighbourhoods and parks, and the final kilometre feels a bit like a victory lap, as you go around a small bay and see and hear the finishing line activity. Thousands of spectators were out shouting words of encouragement. Some people mentioned in previous posts that the half-marathon walkers/slower runners, who share the last few kilometres of the course with the marathon runners, caused some issues, but I did not find that at all this year. The organizers had signage up in all trail/park areas indicating run on the right and pass on the left and most people respected that. I would recommend this race to any and all, and I will remember it forever.

Excpected more

I wil try to be fair. I really expected more of this race. The information about it was misleading. Mississauga is a suburb of Toronto and the race is not what you might find just east of here. The expo was small and not well planned. I found that I had to go back in to make sure I covered all the booths. They should desgn it so that you snake through and catch everything the first time in. The kits had a lot of paper, and not the typical good swag you find at most races. I went to one of the talks by the course doctor and left because I was the only one there. Can't they find a better location than an ice rink? The dinner was also a letdown. Overcooked mushy pasta and no speakers. I found myself still hungry and had to order room service. The water stations were well placed, but they could have used a couple more. The volunteers at them were good and welcome since there were no fans on the course except at the stations. The start area was a mess and no one knew where to go. The finish area was not much better. They ran out of food, bagels and water at the finish area too. There were only a few massage people and I counted only two medical staff. The weather was good with only a light wind, and at around 5 degrees, it was pleasant to run in. I would say to the shirt suplier who will remain nameless that if you're going to give shirts away at an event, is it not better to provide a quality shirt rather than the poorest quality one you make? This thing is not much better than a plastic bag. Names on the bibs is always a good idea and it's great when people call out your name. Please do something about the medals. Overall, it lacks support and with the numbers down. I guess they can't claim to be the fastest growing marathon in Canada anymore.

Room for improvement

There are a few other marathon options in Ontario this time of year, but this one being closer to home is the one I chose. The race starts early in the morning, so don't expect too many spectators, but the few who came out were good. The expo was in a different location this year and they still need help organizing it to flow better and need more choice of stores. The kits are heavy on the paper and make for a lot of garbage and light on stuff you can actually use. The course itself is... well it's Mississauga! Not the most scenic, though parts are very nice and really no fans except for at the water stations. Theres no medical on the course and it's very limited at the finish line. They should get more warming blankets, coffee and have some tents or shelter, as there is none. The finish area seemed to be a big disorganized mess and hopefuly they will have this cleaned up for this year. I don't appeciate spectators running in front of me as I approach the finish line or cars veering into our lanes! It has a lot of potential, but I'm afraid it's years away from realizing it. I would not recommend it for first-timers, as support and facilities are barebones and limited.

Not as good as advertised

I ran the 10K the past two years, and I hope the actual marathon/half was better. The unrealistic point-to-point route for the 10K will have you scrambling to find ample parking, unoccupied port-o-lets and space in the starting line to begin. And when you finish, you have to wait for shuttle buses that don't come often enough, that have to fight traffic going back to the start line (traffic created by the race in the first place). Please kill the 10K route and make it part of the Sunday festivities, or at least eliminate the need for those shuttle buses. I see the 10K course is remaining the same this year, which is a big disappointment, and to make it worse, now there is a 5K on the same route.

First marathon experience

This was my first marathon and overall it was a good experience; namely because I managed to qualify for this year's Boston marathon (2007). My qualification was a total surprise because my bloody watch went on the blink after about six miles, and my real target was simply to finish the damn thing. I think the course overall was sufficient in its variation, but as for the crowd, very sparse indeed. Those who did turn out were top banana, but if you run this race, you'll find yourself running on empty roads, especially in the middle portion of the course. There is a horrible u-turn at about the 14th mile. It's confusing and mentally draining seeing other athletes running ahead of you in the opposite direction. The weather was rubbish but there's nothing you can do about that. The wind coming off the lake for the last few miles was a really big test, both mentally and physically. The pain was excruciating! The last few miles to the finish line were piss-poorly marshaled and is much too narrow for runners, walkers and spectators. Also, some spectators were walking across the course and not respecting the runners, which was infuriating to say the least - probably as a result of the lack of organization at this crucial stage of the course. Overall, I think it is a good marathon if you want to qualify for Boston. Lots of space for you to run "your" race (apart from the aformentioned last few miles). Anyway, it's off to Boston next month, which I reckon will probably kill me. The course looks at lot tougher than the one in Toronto.

Net downhill Boston qualifier you've got to try!

The Mississauga Marathon is the place to be on May 13, 2007. With the net downhill elevation and abundant crowd support, this marathon will definitely be your Boston qualifier, as it was for me. This year (2007) will be the 4th time I run the Mississauga Marathon. Well organized and tons of fun things to do, including the kids' marathon. Family fun run, 10K and 1/2 marathon.

Nice race, would do it again

The race was enjoyable. Having your name on the bib is a nice touch - lots of fans cheer you on by name. The thing I did not like was that I could not find any "pace bunnies" at the start. About 2 miles in, the 3:20 pace bunny came flying by me as if he was running a 5K. Of course, there was no one with him, so I don't know who he was trying to pace. The only other thing was at the end of the race; the walkers from the half merge with the marathoners. It got too crowded on the path, and I had to dodge people. And at that point in the race, all I want to do is focus on my pace and getting to the finish line. It would be better if the marathon/half marathon ran different routes for the last 4K. Overall, I enjoyed the course and felt the start/finish areas were well organized. It was also nice to have changing areas at the end of the race. I also liked that the results were posted at the finish.

Good but room for improvement

Nice course with a variety of scenery and which is net downhill. Water/aid stations were plentiful. The wind was nasty for the full, but that's marathoning. The crowd support was sparse, but enthusiastic and much appreciated. Finish area was chaotic. All the checked bags from the full marathon were just dumped on the ground at the finish, for anyone to pick up. Should have been more attentive to the bags. Could have been seriuos consequences.

Much Room For Improvement

I concur with some of the observations previously made regarding logistical and support issues. My marathon experience here turned out to be rather disappointing in some ways. My first negative impression occurred at the expo. I went there early Friday afternoon. It was very crowded, cramped, and confusing. You had to go to one area, write down your bib number on a Post-It Note, proceed to another area, give them your number and pick up your package, and then get into another line to receive your miscellaneous items. Once inside the expo, it was elbow-to-elbow. Too many people, too little space. A much larger venue is required. The course itself was disappointing. At the start of the race, a local runner told me that the 2nd half was a bit more difficult than the first half. No problem. I was forewarned and ready for the challenge. But I encountered a significant problem along the way, which could have been avoided with better planning. Here's what happened. I was just past the 20-mile point in the race. I came upon a balloon archway, went through it, and continued to run. Within a 100 M or so, there was a black pick-up truck with a camera set up in the back. Just in front of it, there was a side street going to the right. There were pylons set up that continued straight downhill along the same road and a few pylons that veered right. I looked ahead and noticed that the pylons continued along the road in the distance and thought I saw a runner at the top of the hill where the pylons were. So I ran past the pick-up truck and ran down the hill. Guess what? Wrong way! The pick-up truck chased after me and told me to turn right. I was furious! No one at the corner mentioned anything and the pylons went in 2 directions. I don't believe that there were volunteers at that corner. Anyway, I turned around, looked up the hill, and watched as other runners turned right. To summarize this, according to my Garmin 301 Forerunner GPS, I ran a total of 26.93 miles. Needless to say, I was not amused. I have a few constructive suggestions for future races in Mississauga: A) Ensure you have volunteers at critical spots such as the one above. B) During the last 5 KM or so, the pathway, in my opinion, was too narrow for a race of this size. I found myself running side to side and on the grass trying to avoid the half-marathon walkers. I suggest changing the route so that you can run along a road. C) At some water stops, the volunteers inadvertently filled the cups to the top. As soon as I grabbed a cup, it spilled everywhere. On a positive note, I want to thank all of the volunteers for their dedication, support, and positive encouragement. Without them, we don't get to experience events such as this one. I also want to acknowledge the tremendous support of the medical staff. I collapsed upon completion at the finish line. They immediately brought me inside the tent, hooked me up to the IV, and massaged my cramped legs. With some minor changes to the race, I believe this one can be one of the premier marathons in the country. Until then, it will only be mediocre and one that I probably won't run again.

Below Average

First time running this event. Organizers generate a lot of hype but the reality is quite different. The marathon only had about 1,500 - 1,800 people in it, so I am not sure where the "over 10,000 people running" comes from. Anyway the previous comments are pretty spot on for 2006. Nothing they could have done about the weather I suppose.

A PR Course but not on Mother's Day

I finally got my BQ on my 4th attempt and this was in spite of 20 to 30 mph easterly headwinds for the last 17 KM of the race. I chose this course because of the expected westerly tailwind, but no such luck. My guess is you'll get a nice tailwind to help you in most years, but not this one. I'm not a big fan of early registrants getting technical T's but not the late ones. I usually register the week of the race because I'm always worried about getting injured and not being able to run it. So I got a cotton shirt instead. I don't think that's fair. Either give everyone the same shirt or allow participants to defer their registration to next year if they're injured. The course itself is great and I was able to BQ and PR in spite of the wind. It's the best course by far when compared to the Scotia Waterfront and Toronto Marathon. I'm not a big fan of shuttling back to the start line after a race but there's not much you can do about that I guess. The other major complaint I have is the date. It should be the week before Mother's Day rather than on it. It's bad enough that I ran it on Mother's Day, let alone trying to get my wife to bring the kids out on the day that's meant for her. And she would have had to take a shuttle to do so, seeing that there was no parking at the finish. So having her there to see me PR was not really an option. The other advantage of staging the race the week before is you'll get cooler weather on that day, which is better for the runners. Move the date and I think you may have the best marathon in all of Southern Ontario.

Well done, Mississauga!

I'd heard positive things about this race and it didn't disappoint. Nice course - the hills at 10k and 30k are very gradual. There seemed to also be some minor ones at 35+K that weren't specifically mentioned on the website but seemed about as big as the ones at 10k and 30k (though maybe it was just the way I felt by that time ;)). I'd thought the part going around the industrial area would be boring but it wasn't too bad. Not the crowd support at some other marathons, but still a decent turnout and the folks were all very supportive. Definitely a fast course - or it would have been if not for that wicked wind off the lake! Still, a nice course and I think I'd do it again. Very well organized on race day itself - food was easy to get to and plentiful, results were posted very quickly, shuttle buses were frequent. Loved the fact that they played O Canada at the start. (Oh yeah, there is one small point - there needs to be more portapotties at the race start.) Another slight downer: the race expo was a bit chaotic even on the Friday. I think the layout of the expo at the YMCA needs to be improved. Maybe they weren't counting on the high registration numbers. All in all, way to go Mississauga!

Nice course, lots of water stations

My third time running this race. I ran the half twice and this year I did the full. The start line: ok, it could use dozens more portapotties for the few thousand runners. There's tons of parking at the start (but none at the finish, so they use shuttle buses to get people back to their cars.) The course: nice, with scenic areas, (exception: the stinky out-and-back stretch in the industrial area). You run through lots of residential areas and then down along the waterfront through parklands and along a multi-use trail. The course is relatively flat, no major hills, just a few inclines. Course support: very good. Lots of water/gatorade stations (approx. every 2K) and gels at 3 places. Traffic control was reasonably good, though slower runners were complaining that the race organizers were removing the pilons towards the end, leaving them with no directions to the finish. Otherwise, the course was well marked, km by km. The finish area: a nightmare/safety hazard with people walking all over the course!! I really hope they'll cordon it off next year. The only other issue is that it is always windy there because it's close to the lake. Post-race food and party: spartan. Food was scarce - some fruit and bagels, water and gatorade (in cups). Fan support: major intersections had clusters of people, but there were many quiet stretches. The finish line is a bit of a zoo, people everywhere. It's a good race, I'll run it again next year if they don't hike up the price.

Terrible logistics and organization, often unsafe

I ran the inaugural and thought after two years they had to have cleaned up their act, wrong. This is a point to wrong point race. It is a net down hill but.. No shelter at the start, long traffic lines to get parked, long walk to start line, water stations with only a metre path down the middle as volunteers crowded runners, no race medical radios, one metre path width for the last four km with dogs and children on the path, no separation of spectators from race medical and recovery areas, one km walk to bus area at end, followed by forty minute wait for bus with spectators crowding athletes out to the wrong site, followed by thirty minute bus ride which deposited us several miles from our car. Grandad was right, if you have to say it's world class....it isn't. Better than Boston? Not in this century.

Lots of improvements this year

Ran the full marathon yesterday (2006) and it appears the organizers have made an effort to correct a lot of previous problems. Finish line is still awful for spectators and the wind was hell, but some of the comments from previous runners have been rectified (except the comment about the taste of the water - awful - they should switch to bottled water). The course was well marked, and extremely well marshalled - there were NO issues with traffic. Finish line food was standard fare, but plenty to go 'round and tons of volunteers bringing it to runners as well as manning food stations.

Give Race walkers some respect

I really enjoyed the 10k - the course was great - however - we racewalkers are racers too - why are our results lumped in with runners - there is a distinction - fast walkers are not slow runners but you would never know the way you publish the results

no fans and cramped course

The comments above say it all! This is a new event and still has lots of room to grow and improve. NO fans and I don't believe that they will ever get many since the course is pretty isolated, windy and wet. There were no safety blankets at the finish line and food was limited and very disorganized. They should try to move the course more on the roads, since the bike path gets crowded in some parts with local people walking dogs and with strollers, and the grass got muddy too. Not the event they say it is.

Not a great 1st marathon. The course is not so flat, but that's ok 'cause hills are good. Lousy expo and I was surprised at how expensive this event is. I think they are getting greedy. There were no bands or spectators to be seen.

1/2 Marathon Course - Great Until the End

I ran the 1/2 Marathon and thought it was a great course! There were a few slight inclines at the 10K and 14K marks, but nothing too serious. It was great to have your name on the bib so spectators could cheer you on personally. My only disappointment was the end of the race -- you finish along a path where the finish line is not visible until about 50M out. Because there were not KM markers, I was unable to judge the end to begin to increase my speed to the finish.

recommended to locals

These comments are from someone who was not able to finish the race...so take them with a grain of salt. The organization was pretty good in terms of the expo, start area, and a very good race shirt. The course is modestly hilly and net downhill. However, there is a stretch of industrial blight from 20km-28km that detracts from an otherwise pretty marathon. My biggest suggestion for this race is to provide a truly 'closed-road' course. There is a long stretch where the course consists of the shoulder of a road. There are not enough police, and I witnessed several cars encroaching on the course. Overall, I would say that anyone registering for this race with modest expectations will be pleased. The organizers got enough things right to make me confident that they can improve the problems.

Great course, extremely well organized!!

This marathon definitely the potential to be the best in Canada. Great route (net downhill, with some slight inclines that are immediately followed by slight descents), very scenic. One complaint: I could have done without the tight turn-around at the 25km split. Support was good; it was nice that they thought to print your name on your bibs as the personalized cheers were much needed motivation at times. Water stops were well placed and frequent. The organizers did a great job; the logistics were great. No big line-ups for the post-race massage. Overall, a wonderful venue and race.

This is a good one!

The second year running has now passed. Last year I ran the 1/2 and had a blast. Decided to run the full this year with hopes of qualifying for Boston; I'd heard it was a good challenge from a number of people and had a bit of everything. The course is not difficult, but it does require some planning. Weather was again nearly perfect with a bit of cloud this year for variety. Needed a few more porta-potties at the start (I didn't need them but lots did - I emailed the RD on this point). The course is beautiful with a gentle downhill stretch (nearly 10k worth) in the early part that needs patience. The rest of the course winds through scenic city streets and the waterfront, the spectators are great, fuel stops are nicely placed and there's a gel station at 23k to get you through the finish. Undulating terrain at the base, some interesting runs through mini-parks and even the marina area footbridges; it's constantly entertaining and surprising. Music was provided both by the race and spectators enroute. Great finishing area with change tents, great food at the end, and even a free phone call! I got my BQ so I may have to skip it next year... but you never know.

GREAT, FAST, SCENIC MARATHON

Being their first annual marathon, I had no idea what to expect; but we had a bright cloudless day that started off cool and did not warm up too much, thankfully. Although it is advertised as a flat course, there are some hills, especially towards the end! The bystanders were cheerful, the course was scenic and there were water stations at regular intervals! This was my 4th marathon and it was great.

For a first marathon, the organizers did a good job! I come from Israel and I don't see that here. It was a very well organized and carried out marathon. I realize that the number of participants exceeded expectations of the organizers. The course was scenic, almost flat and fast, volunteers did a great job to support runners. I am sure that Mississauga Marathon will become a very important event in both Ontario and Canada.

Not bad for first time event

I am happy that the marathoners seemed to enjoy the event, based on the feedback. Those of us doing the 10km event had a different experience, with shuttle bus chaos (and an unexpected walk to our cars) at the finish. The good news is that these things can easily be worked out for next year. Or even better, why not make the shorter distance event routes a single loop? Point-to-point courses carry more logistic problems.

Good effort for first-time Mississauga Marathon

The Mississauga Marathon is going to be a winner. For the most part, the course is scenic and much better than the courses in Toronto. A number of first-time marathoners did this course and it's an ideal one for them - no big hills, very few impatient drivers and lots of water stops. As most commenters mentioned - there were a few glitches but I'm sure they'll be worked out. This looks like it may be THE RACE of the spring in coming years!

Shows Great Promise for the Future!

Even though this was my first marathon, I have done a lot of other races and I think that, for a first time event, it was very well organized (except that the info about logistics did not appear on the website until a few days before!). The course was mostly scenic and shaded and there were a number of very friendly spectators. They ran out of t-shirts in my size but gave me a rain check (they are supposed to order more t-shirts and mail them out). Loved the crowds at the finish. For those who complain about the long walk to the shuttle bus, it was done with the intention of keeping us moving after our great effort. All in all, it was obvious that a lot of effort was put into the organization and I definitely recommend this race!!

A Great First Year For A Fast Course

Fast and scenic course. Well shaded and lots of wind-break through most of it. Well organized except for some of the small paths towards the finish where you had to deal with some pedestrian traffic. A fantastic (and long overdue) alternative to Ottawa for those living in the Toronto area who aren't in the mood to drive 5 hours.

A great start for this marathon

I think the turnout for this race surpassed the organizers wildest dreams given that this was the first running of this event. The course is flat and fast with only a couple of rolling hills thrown in to make it interesting. Aside from one section in an industrial area, the route goes through some of the nicer neighbourhoods in the city and makes generous use of the waterfront. The only complaint about the course would be that there are a few twisting sections where the runners run along bike paths. The paths allowed us to run close to the water but there is not a lot of room on them. If the event and the field continue to grow, the route may have to be changed to avoid some of these paths. The organization of the races was remarkable given that this was the inaugural event. There were a few hiccups (mainly centred around the shuttle buses) but nothing that can't be worked on and made better for next year. There were a decent number of spectators, nothing on the order of the big city marathons but a respectable number who did a great job of cheering us all on.

A great first edition!

I ran the half and it was great, flat, easy run. The last 2/3 of the route were scenic. People were supportive, though a bit scarce. Kudos to the volunteers, the organizers and the mayor (83-year young Hazel McCallion :-)). The organizers need to iron out a few issues (such as the traffic flow and public transportation to the start line, parking, T-shirts and medals for the runners, etc.) I'd run it again.

Great for a first time event

What a rush! My first marathon and an inaugural one at that. Have watched a number of others though and thought this was well-organized with the only difficulty being the later start. Thought the loop at the end was a bit demoralizing especially when at first glance the finish looked so close. Thought could have been more spectators en route. Loved the 34km Road Dog water station! The clowns were great and helped pick me up when I needed it. Thanks and will be back next year

A great first marathon.

The course was varied and beautiful, as the road wound mainly through tree-covered residential areas and ended along a lake. Although not abundant, the spectators were cheerful and encouraging. Every kilometer was clearly marked and there was both water and Gatorade at every 2K. The medical attention I received at the end, after running my heart out, was impressive.

Very Fast Course

I decided to run the Mississauga Marathon because our marathon here in Pittsburgh was cancelled due to budget cuts. Being originally from Brampton I always enjoy a chance to go back to Canada. The decision paid of for me in a major way. I cut nine minutes off my previous best and qualified for Boston for the first time in my eleventh marathon. This course is by far the fastest marathon course I have run. The entire race is flat or downhill. I would strongly recommend this race to anyone looking for a P.R. The organization was OK but they still need to work on a couple things. They did not post where their expo was going to be, or other details on there website until about 10 days before the race. An e-mail I sent a couple days before the race also went unanswered. The crowds were non existent at times in downtown Mississauga but better in the neighborhoods outside of the main part of town. The crowds were also pretty good near the finish area. There seemed to be a lot of traffic problems with the motorists around town, so be prepared for a lot of horn blowing. Where does Mississauga put all those orange cones until next year? All in all this was a good first marathon and a very fast and quite scenic course. I will probably run it again but not next year. I am going to Boston thanks to Mississauga.

Great inaugural marathon. A fast scenic course.

A race that I will consider re-entering next year. A great Boston qualifier. Unfortunately the shuttle service from the finish area was not well thought out. Too far to walk after the race. Should be able to commute the runners back to the starting area.

Marathon of world-class caliber

For an inaugural race, organizers and volunteers alike delivered a race worthy of world-class designation. As with any experience in life, ultimately, it is what we make of it. Having done 5, I realize that running a marathon however, how much better of an experience it becomes hinges on a few (albeit small) details that one has no control over. It is on these fronts that the Mississauga Marathon exceeded my expectations. Namely, consistently, at every 2K, water/aid stations, fuel-replenishing gels at 24K and 34K as advertised, road marshals at all key junctures of the race and most importantly, a truly beautiful course of both urban sprawl and park-like settings. The race finishes appropriately on beautiful Lake Ontario.

Nice Course For The Inaugural Race

Perfect weather for the inaugural Mississauga Marathon. The course is a net downhill with a few rolling hills scattered throughout the way. Having water stops ever 2 kms was fantastic - although there were a few that could have been positioned at the top of the hills rather than in the middle. Coming up to the finish line could have been wider and it was difficult to see the finish line and clock until right at the end but the spectator support at the end was terrific. The volunteers along the course were great and the spectators along the route were supportive. Even the people stuck in their cars were relatively supportive, unlike those at the Toronto Marathon.
