A good race with some small tweaks needed

I ran this race in 2023 as part of my 50-marathons-in-50-states goal. It was my 29th marathon overall, so I have a lot to compare it to. The positives: * Race morning logistics were easy. Parking was plentiful, packet pickup was available the morning of (which was nice because I came in from out of town), and the start/finish line couldn't have been any closer to my car. Port-o-potties were plentiful, which usually isn't the case. * The course was nothing special, but pleasant: some nice neighborhoods and some paved trails through forest preserves. * In terms of quality, the t-shirt was average, but the medal was definitely above average. * Everything I needed as an out-of-state traveler was easy to get: flights to and from KC, rental car, decent hotel, food, etc. This is a good race to do if you share my 50-state goal. Opportunities: * WATER/GATORADE The cups at the water station were small and the pours were insufficient. It wasn't a warm day, but I needed 2-3 every time I passed through. At several of the tables, you had to grab your own drinks yourself instead of having someone hand them to you in stride. They could have added one or two tables and brought down the average distance between hydration stations. * There was at least one road crossing that was completely uncontrolled by race volunteers or local police. This was right before the turnaround in the 12th or 13th mile. * The race directors shouldn't start the race IMMEDIATELY upon the conclusion of the national anthem. Give people a second to get their hats back on, get their music turned on, etc. * This is a tougher course. The first half of the course is generally downhill and the second half is generally climbing back up the same hills you just came down. I'm not complaining; it is what it is. Just be forewarned if you think 'flat' when you think of Kansas.

Just a shame

I wish this race was longer, said no marathon runner, ever. Except in this case. What do you say about a marathon that didn't count because it was too short? Apparently somebody misplaced a traffic cone at one of the turnaround points. When I got home my own Garmin watch congratulated me on running a half marathon (It had only logged 26.08 miles). It's a shame it was all for naught because it wasn't an easy race to run. Half the race was into winds in excess of 25 mph. And it got steadily windier as the day went on. After I finished I couldn't even drink a free beer. I'd tip the cup up and the wind blew the beer out of it before I could taste it. I came in from out of State and paid for airfare, rental car, hotel room, race registration and other expenses and in return I got some cups of gatorade, a few Power Gel's, a tee shirt, a large medal, and a letter of apology. As you can sense I'm not happy about this. The Pros were: Very small expo for packet pickup. Hotels very near the start/finish A nice course on bike trails Race pacers A parking garage at the start and finish to get out of any bad weather. The Cons: You'll be running in Kansas which can be extremely windy Several turn arounds on the course A little hilly but only noticed when you face into the wind. I'd run it again if Garmin paid for my registration.

This marathon has almost everything you want

I was concerned about this marathon based on reviews from prior years. This marathon exceeded my expectations and more. Easy package pickup the day before or the morning of the race. Easy parking in a covered parking deck right at the finish line. I was able to stay in my car until minutes before the start which was great since it was mid-30's. My car was closer to the finish than the bag check! Start only a short walk away. Course was mostly paved greenway with plenty of water stops and Gu at many of them. Volunteers did great job of having water, gatorade or gu ready. Police kept traffic stopped at all intersections. As stated most of the climbing is in the second half of the marathon but nothing major. Finish line had plenty of good food, burgers, hot dogs, chicken and BBQ in addition to normal post run bagels, chocolate milk and beer. Even had margaritas. Massage available, results easy to get and age group awards handed out immediately. There was a mix up with the medals at the end, but race director will be mailing out correct medals. Easy to fly in and out of KC. Free photos from several spots on the course and the finish line.

Great race in the land of OZ

We really enjoyed the Garmin Marathon. Overall it was an excellent event. The course is fine, yet hilly. The Oz theme is very cute...loved the flying monkeys hanging from trees. Good aid stations the entire way. Post race food is great with chicken sandwiches, hot dogs, beer and margaritas. A nice tent to take shelter after the race to eat and drink with heat lamps. A great medal! There were bars, choc milk and protein balls as well along with a live band playing. If you need tons of spectators maybe not for you. Only negative was delay getting to start. Need to open more roads and access to start to avoid delays for runners to get there on time.

What a Total Disappointment

This race was a trainwreck. The good part about it, was that packet pick up on race morning was great and went off without a hitch. The water stop volunteers were also fine. But, that is about it. First off, the 6:45 start was not followed. So it was cold in the morning and as the clock ticked closer to 6:45 we learned from the announcer that the race would start at 7:00 because of 'traffic delays'. What nonsense. Many of us got there on time, so start the race as scheduled. Then as it got closer to 7:00, we were then told it was going to be a 7:10 start time. So a 25 minute delay because of poor planning. And it was cold outside but the shelter tents were all full of NON-RUNNERS so you had to brave the elements as you waited for the start. The course was ok, but the last half of the out and back may be boring for some. Upon crossing the finish line, I was handed a medal and warm bottle of water. THAT IS IT! Where was the chocolate milk? Sandwiches? Beer? All the other stuff they talked about? I guess the half marathoners ate and drank it all. But I do know for sure that if you finish at 5 hours or later you would not be eating. What a disappointment. And if you do think about running the race next year and you take a leap of faith that there will be food, do not count on any loved ones being able to see you on the course. The least spectator friendly course I have ever ran. Lastly, shame on the RD for running out of food and for starting late. No excuse!

Family Fun Event!!!!

I ran in the half marathon. This was my first race in Kansas, and I was very well pleased. I missed the expo because I got there too late the night prior; however, I didn't have any issues with picking up my race packet the morning of the race. Is it a small race? Yes, but the runners were packed with energy. I was a little disappointed in the lack of spectators along the course. Also, I felt sorry for the long traffic delays/congestion....Did Olathe not know the marathon was taking place???? I don't know, but that could have been organized a little better for the commuters. The hydration stations were plentiful. The post race activities were awesome as well. Although I didn't eat, it was a nice touch to have the free grilled sandwiches at the end. I would definitely do this race again if the opportunity presented itself. It was a little hilly, but I've experienced worse. Great job RD. Awesome medal as well!!!!

An event worth remembering...

I was pleased to have completed the 15th Annual event in 2017. I did not complete the course to the best of my ability, did not maintain the mental toughness needed to iron out the 'gentle' hills, but had a great experience. The out and back second half was beautiful with chances to cheer others and receive cheers in return. Many costumed runners added to the fun factor. The volunteers were wonderful; a diverse population was there to support the runners which was refreshing. Organization was super! Medals were good if you care about that kind of thing. Spectators were sprinkled throughout the diverse neighborhoods, not a real large presence ultimately. Only complaint, do not boast of chocolate milk at the starting line for ALL runners and run out. Olathe should be VERY proud!

Small marathon in a suburban area

One's observation of a race is no doubt skewed by the person's performance. Since I had a good race, I left Olathe/Kansas City with good feelings. In driving the course the day before, I thought the hilliness would be a challenge, but found almost all of them to be gentle, rolling hills. The second half of the course is out and back on a bike path; about like running in a nature park. I enjoyed it and I like getting glimpses of the race leaders as I head towards midway and the tailenders as I leave midway. I know some complained about the lack of spectators, but I don't require the community to come to the parade for me to consider it a good marathon.

Kansas is NOT flat - but still fun!

I heard traffic was bad, but we stayed at the hotel so didn't experience that. The hotel was amazing and it was so convenient with the start and finish, expo, etc. right there. There were even several restaurants right across the street. I would like to see marathon-branded merchandise available for sale at the expo. On the plus side, the shirt was one of the nicest I've ever received and I will wear it often. I enjoyed the course, and I especially enjoyed the out and back portion along the river and train tracks. That portion was asphalt, not concrete, which I had feared before running. The course was hilly, so it definitely won't be your fastest, but it is enjoyable and the scenery was pretty. The medal is a bit large for my taste, but it's well made and memorable. I'm a slower runner and the finish line still had food, beer, etc. This was a very enjoyable race and I'm glad I chose it.

Nice race and friendly people

Worked into my 50 states calendar and I'm glad it it did. Really nice small marathon with friendly people and easy logistics for parking. Medal is large and great Oz themed shirt. Course is mostly flat and fast, though I'm am not. Would do again as everyone is friendly.

Lonely

Unlike other marathons I've run this one is pretty much devoid of any enthusiasm from the local populace. Not that it's necessary, but it's nice to have people lining the streets in the neighborhoods. The new course showcases the fact that Olathe simply puts up with the race. The fact that the last half of the marathon is run entirely on a greenway park trail shows that the city doesn't want runners on the streets, and the lack of people shows that as well. Runners who showed up an hour before the race were parked furthest away, while those who didn't plan were granted the closest parking. I'm not an elite, but I'm not a back of the packer - when I finished the full the finish line area was practically vacant and devoid of what I imagine the 1/2 finishers devoured. Not recommended.

Well organized smaller marathon with Oz theme

The organizers changed to a new course in 2016 to eliminate the 'muddy trail' scenario other posters have referred to. However, this made the course more challenging with fairly constant rolling hills throughout - even on the bike path used for the second half. Pros: 1) Very good race organization 2) Lots of committed volunteers 3) New expo location allows for easier packet pick-up 4) First half of course showcases lots of Olathe and surrounding communities 5) Large medal with changing Wizard of Oz theme 6) Good communication via email and Facebook leading up to marathon 7) Excellent new start/finish location 8) Good course support with water, Gatorade?, and Gu. Cons: 1) Expo was on small side with maybe 20 vendors 2) Marathon is over shadowed by half marathon 3) Second half of marathon course is extremely rolling 6.5 miles out and 6.5 miles back on an asphalt bike trail which is fairly boring 4) Insufficient number of portapotties at start 5) Community did not seem aware of marathon - few spectators beyond runners' families 6) Garmin reps at expo did not know their Forerunner product line very well Overall this is a good smaller marathon. The Oz theme is fun. The weather was a bit warm. That combined with the challenging course, especially the bike trail section, kicked my butt. It did allow me to complete Kansas on my 50 state marathon quest.

Overall B

Pros -Great race shirt and did NOT have dozens of sponsors all over the shirt -Medal large and unique -Course nice out and back section on the 2nd half, could be boring for some -Pace teams Cons -Having parking blocked off at the start that was NOT utilized by businesses -Finish area food/drink, really? H20, cheap granola bars, and bananas. Where was the sport drink chocolate milk, gluten free carbs? Come on we just ran a marathon have more food! -The town did not really seem to embrace this race many area few or no spectators -Hills are deceivingly hard, I thought Kansas would be flat -Garmin is the presenting sponsor and offers no discount for participants and when you go to the company HQ the prices are more expensive than on-line. Again embrace the participants and give us some perks incentives to run your event

well organized, but wet

Olathe is a well organized race and the logistics at the start and finish were excellent. The course had far more hills than I anticipated, but things flatten out later in the race. The volunteers were tremendous and they went out of their way to try to provide comfort during the rain. The trail through the woods towards the end of the race is flat and peaceful (even with the rain). The course is fairly non-descript, but it does include residential, agricultural, and some industrial scenery. Overall, a good marathon, but not one I'd do more than once.

Rainy First Marathon, But Will Do It Again

I decided on the 2015 Garmin Marathon as my first full marathon for multiple reasons, including location, timing of the event, and other personal reasons. So, this was a Big Deal for me. The packet pick up was very easy and quick on the Thursday before the race at the Hilton Garden Inn. I obsessively watched the forecast the week before, and expected rain/storms, which was discouraging. The first half of the race was beautiful, but storms and rain began at about the halfway point for me. As others have mentioned, the trails in the latter half became muddy and slippery, and my feet felt like they weighed 100 pounds each, but attempts were made to throw hay down for traction. I was fortunate enough to preview the course and trails a few days prior, and race organizers had done a great job of clearing the trails of mud resulting from recent heavy rains. The spectators were sparse but enthusiastic, and I give them a '5 star' rating for toughing it out in the rain with us! Plus, having fewer spectators meant I could spot my own 'fans' more readily. I loved the course, which had a balance of residential, business, and historic 'old Olathe' sights, in addition to beautiful trails, which would have been delightful were it not for the rain. The post-race refreshments were satisfying, with goodies from Whole Foods and yummy chicken sandwiches from a local church. But, the advertised chocolate milk was notably lacking. :( As this was my first full marathon, the decision of running another or calling it quits was in the balance. The Garmin Marathon succeeded in hooking me on marathons...overall, my experience was fantastic as a first time marathoner, and this will be my second full marathon in 2016. My main hope is that the weather will be more pleasant so the runners can fully enjoy the lovely course in the Land of Oz.

Surprisingly hilly course

The course for the full marathon is actually made of constant rolling hills. There's also a couple mile stretch in the middle section where you will be running up a few very steep, but short bouts of inclines. Definitely do not expect an easy, flat course as advertised. Mile 15-24 or so are on trails, and it rained for most of the race day morning, making the trail section into a slippery and splashing muddy course. So make sure to check the weather beforehand and be prepared. The supporters were nice and the aid stations were adequate. Chocolate milk as mentioned in other reviews was absent at the finish line, but they did have free beer and chicken sandwiches. I didn't have any complaints with the packet pick up process myself. It was at a small venue (Hilton Garden Inn), but I was in and out of there with my packet in a few minutes.

Great small-town marathon

This is a really great event. Pros: 1) well organized 2) great and committed volunteers 3) easy packet pickup 4) great course support 5) great bling (medal large and well-designed) 6) great race director - did not pull us from course even though there were a number of miles with thunder/lightening (which stopped so would have been a shame to cancel) This is a really great small marathon with great course support. I loved the Oz theme and strongly recommend this marathon!

Expect rain, rolling hills and great volunteers

My comments are from the perspective of someone who has run 6 marathons in the 4:30 rangefor whatever that's worth. The packet pickup was held in the lobby of a hotel. Maybe there were a couple booths, but don't come to this pick up expecting to get anything for the race. Parking is plentiful near the race; and they had police yellow tape separating groups of porta potties to make the lines more manageable - worked really well: not sure why more don't do that. The race starts at 6:45. I like the early start. There were maybe 4500 runners signed up, so it's not a huge, crowded race. They don't have or need corrals at the start so it's kind of a mosh pit feel, but it's manageable. It is advertised as a flat course. From my perspective, while we're not talking giant mountains, we're also not talking flat. I'd call it occasionally flat with plenty of rolling hills. Part of the race is on streets and part is on trails. For the part on the streets, you were basically sharing the road with cars. If you ventured out past the orange cones too far, you risked getting hit. It seems to rain almost every year of this race, and for the portion of the race on the trails, it became incredibly muddy and slippery; and by the end of the race, I felt like I was carrying an extra 2-3 pounds of mud on my shoes. Despite the rain, which at times was heavy, the volunteers were there handing out water and Gu and encouraging the runners. They were great. There weren't many spectators at all (which doesn't bother me); but if you're looking for big crowds, this is not your race. The medal is pretty big, and there may have been lots of food after the race, but I was wet and didn't go in search of it. Overall, it's a well-organized race with wonderful volunteers.

Fun marathon with passion from the organizers

Overall, I liked this marathon. I felt the course was great, I liked the support. It was very spectator friendly, and the participation & costumes from the runners was fantastic. My only con was packet pick up. That was a bit of a mess. Not in terms of organization, but in terms of flow

Follow the Muddy-Brick Road (see #9 below)??!!

Top 10 Reasons why this marathon (my 38th) is one of my most favorites: 1) Title sponsor is Garmin so the organizers are able to bring him big name, Garmin-sponsored elite runners to speak and mingle with interested participants at the Pasta Dinner. This year the guest was Meb Keflezighi, US Olympian, winner of NYC marathon and this year's Boston Marathon winner! Now, how absolutely cool is THAT!!! 2) Photos and autographs with Meb! 3) A true Oz experience: fellow runners really getting into the theme dressed as Scarecrow, Lion, Tin Man, Flying Monkeys, Witches. (In what other marathon, can you experience 5 Dorothy's pass you!). A yellow brick road finish line. Aid station volunteers in full costume. 4) Gutsy race director - heavy downpour with thunder and lightening for the second hour of the race, yet no cancellation! Turned out to be the right move, the weather cleared and the rest of the day was beautiful. But boy oh boy was that hour of thunder, lightening and black skies harrowing - almost like the first part of the movie!! 5) Cool medal - this year: the lion in front of the yellow brick road and Emerald City. 6) Cool shirt - this year: the lion with the word 'Courage' above his picture in navy blue with gold letters 7) Nice 'pasta' dinner - not truely pasta but nevertheless delicious 8) Small size - my wife and I were together at the start line until the gun went off - can't do that in Boston, New York, Chicago, etc. 9) Pretty course - miles 15-25 are on a bike trail along a creek. This year it got a little bit muddy (because of the earlier rain) in portions but not a big problem. Just made our journey to the 'Emerald City' more fun! 10) Pretty flat course - some very very small hills but this IS Kansas and this course is basically flat. A runner can have a fast time on this course (even though I personally couldn't follow through on that claim!).

A tough rolling hill course

This marathon is quite a challenge with many rolling hills throughout the course. The race website says flat and fast which it is if you are elite but most people would not find it flat or fast. If they changed the website to say that I wouldnt have a problem. The weather turned its ugly head with pouring rain, wind, hail, lighting, thunder and tornado watches for about 4 miles of the course. It turned the course almost into a tough mudder run in places. The volunteers at the aid stations were totally awesome. A big thank you to the aid station personnel at mile 23.5 who gave me a blueberry muffin which helped me get to the end. Not many spectators out on the course since they would have been in ankle deep water. Post-race food was good with a grilled chicken sandwich which was tasty. They also had yogurt, water and beer. They need to make sure all the yogurt is on ice and not left out in 70 degree heat. They advertised chocolate milk which I didnt see any. I was able to get it at a gas station on the way back to the hotel. The race shirt was a ok with the cowardly lion on the front. Medal was huge with the cowardly lion and the yellow brick road on it. I bet it weighs 5 lbs. Awesome! The packet pickup was a little disorganized. Way too crowded in the small rooms at the Hilton Garden Inn. Guest speaker was MEB who had won the Boston Marathon 5 days before. He was great and posed for photos and autographs for over an hour after he was done. The food at the pasta feed was really good. Some suggestions for runners of future Garmin OZ Runners and Race director: I would recommend staying in Overland Park which is about 10-15 minutes from the course. Hotels are nice and about ½ the cost of the ones in Olathe. Keep the yogurt on ice after the race and have chocolate milk. Change the course description to a rolling hill course on the website. In summary, as I am now over 1/4 through the 50 State quest, I am glad I ran this one for the Kansas Marathon.

Nice region, OK race

First off, thanks to Garmin for sponsoring and helping stage this race. I'm a longtime Forerunner user and I like the fact that they put their name on their hometown marathon. Thanks also to the race organizers for gutting out the 2014 race. A big thunderstorm rolled in about 80 minutes into the race, and many of us were worried about the race being black-flagged and runners pulled off the course. After about 45 minutes, the storm moved off and there were even bits of sun by the end of the race. As several others have noted, be sure to check the elevation charts, because the course puts the lie to notions of pancake-flat Kansas plains. Not hilly, per se, but plenty of up-and-down, particularly in the middle miles. Even the greenway sections, of which there are two, are pretty bumpy and they both got very muddy and slippery with the rain we had in the middle of the race. When you're not on greenways, you're mostly on boring commercial streets (at the beginning and middle) or residential neighborhoods (toward the end). I can't say the course is anything to write home about. Aid stations and on-course support were good. The marathon is marketed around an Oz theme and the tech T and (oversized and garish) medal both referenced the 2014 theme of 'Courage' with Cowardly Lion images. All that being said, there's a lot to like about Kansas City and the surrounding region (including great post-race barbecue options). I'm working on 50+DC and my schedule dictated a spring marathon instead of the fall city marathon, so this was a good option with easy airport access.

My least favorite marathon so far

This was supposed to be my first marathon, in 2009, but the race was cancelled due to weather. I don't fault race organizers for that. They transferred my registration to 2010, said they would send me my shirt but they never did. Packet pickup was in an abandoned mall, in an empty store, and there was basically no expo. The course was essentially running around this mall's parking lot and then running on a local trail out and back. Not terrible, but cramped. There was no timing on the course, and there were essentially no spectators. The best thing I can say is that the race organizers are energetic and love their town. I wouldn't run this race again.

Great Race, but just needs a few improvements

I ran this marathon in both 2013 and 2012 and would definitely do it again. The smaller size makes it very pleasant and I never had to wait in any long lines. The course did change in 2013 to include some hills. The medal is one of my favorites. It is large with a high quality ribbon. The Wizard of Oz theme also makes this race fun. The pacers were fantastic as well. I ran with the 5 hour pacer for most of the race and she was A+. There are also chicken sandwiches and beer at the finish line. My disappointments were that no one seemed to be helping runners at the finish. I never found the chocolate milk and it was a pain to find the finisher shirt. Also I came to the race with 10 other lady friends and not one of us could fit into the women's finisher shirt. It was teeny tiny!

Great fun, but...

I'd agree with other comments that it isn't 'flat' from around 7 through the halfway point. I can't remember much of a flat section between those miles, although I have run more difficult courses. The volunteers were AWESOME, though - thanks so much! I would have been disappointed if I had run the half and received only the event shirt (seems that only full finishers got a tech shirt?)- the event shirt had a pretty feminine design. Thanks to Garmin for hosting the event and bringing in the speakers. I very much enjoyed the Oz theme, and would recommend it if you don't have big city race expectations. Pasta dinner was one of the best I've had, and certainly the best value.

Pleasant, small race

I ran this race as my Kansas race and for the most part enjoyed the experience. The race plays up the Wizard of Oz-Kansas connection and that creates a fun atmosphere. There's a Hot air balloon at the start, many runners wore Oz related costumes and one of the aid stops late in the race just outdid themselves w/ costumes and scenery. Garmin is the title sponsor and the race begins and ends in their parking lot and the expo is held there. Parking for the expo was challenging. I saw many cars driving around trying to find empty spots. Well there was a lot around back with plenty of spots. Garmin should spring for some signage because this lot was not apparent from the front. The expo was fairly modest but it was nice hearing Desi Davilla speak! Pre-race there were plenty of port-a-potties. I do like the stress free logistics of smaller races (700 marathoners) like this. Lots of folks have commented on the 'hilly' course. I'm not sure I would call the race hilly but its not 'flat and fast' either. I admit I was expecting Kansas plains but I'm very glad I looked at the elevation chart the night before. The miles 6-13 had quite a few hills. Knowing that ahead of time really helped. There were plenty of aid stops and the gatorade flavor changed from stop to stop. Always a nice touch. The gatorade was a little watered down and each stop was organized differently. Every stop should be identical so late in a race runners know what to expect when they are fatigued (Houston marathon does this better than anyone). Miles 15-25 are on a paved bike path. This was the most scenic part of the race (the early miles are pretty boring). There is a long out and back (15-22) which can be a little mentally taxing. There's the standard problem of races on public trails when pedestrians are sharing the road with racers. Often these folks are resentful of runners. Other than that the section along here was nice. After the race they were out of mylar blankets when I finished (4:34 and still almost 300 folks on the course) and I couldn't find the finishers shirt. I assumed they ran out until I just read the previous comment about trying to find his. A runner who's just run 26 miles shouldn't have to search high and low for post race items! The medals were handed out right at the finish (we didn't have to search for these) and they were real nice. This year's medal had a tin man theme (they change it up every year). I stayed LaQuinta which was about 2 miles away, gave me a late check out, offered shuttle service to the race and had no minimum stay. An ideal host hotel!

Not Flat as advertised

This was my 14th marathon and the most disappointing. The biggest disappointment is that the course was changed from prior years and while advertised as flat it was very hilly for the first half. Pros: Nice Medal, Friendly Volunteers, Adequate Aid Stations, Reasonably Priced Cons: Not flat and fast as advertised, little Garmin presence (no time clocks or splits on the course), Gatorade appeared to be watered down, hard to find port a potties on second half Glad to have Kansas completed but would not recommend race to others.

Great race!

I chose Land of Oz because I am working on the 50 states and was hoping somewhere in Kansas I could find an OZ themed race. I haven't run a full marathon for a couple years due to an injury so I was viewing this as more of a confidence builder to get me back into it. This was a great race! The volunteers were wonderful, everything was well organized, and it was the perfect size-not too many people but you were never alone on the course. My only suggestion would be to have the elevation gain noted somewhere. I searched and searched and never found it. The course was advertised as flat and fast but I wouldn't necessarily agree. But, it was a nice course and I PR'd! I would highly recommend this race. The finish line was one of the better finish line parties I have attended. Lots of spectators who stuck around for everyone-not leaving until the last runner crossed the finish line.

Fast, not flat, decent organization

The course changed for 2013 but the website description didn't. They replaced the loop around the mall and industrial park with hills and main roads. Good aid station support, well marked, and people to run with even if you want to run fast. Was a little disappointed with the unexpected grade of the hills but I should have done my homework. Swag was fine but you have to find the finisher tent to get your stuff. Could do slightly better with communication.

Overall decent experience

I am pursuing the 50 states and chose this marathon for Kansas because so many other Marathon Maniacs were going to be there. I wouldn't rave about the race but it was a decent choice for Kansas. Pros: -plenty of aid stations -nice to have running celebrities speak at the expo (Scott Jurek, Desi Davila, and Josh Cox) -nice personalized print-out of your results at the finish area -excellent traffic control; police were great -adequate food at finish; nice chicken sandwiches! -waited for the slower finishers at the finish line -plenty of hotels in the area (I stayed one mile away at La Quinta which was great) -race committee member made and displayed banners welcoming the Marathon Maniacs and Half Fanatics -race committee member wandered around post-race area asking those of us who finished in the back of the pack if we got our finisher's shirt and if we needed anything; nice touch -not many spectators but those who were there were awesome -received an email that day with my race results Areas for improvement: -race description on web site was misleading. Called it 'flat and fast' and said rolling hills started at mile 9. There were plenty of hills in the entire first half of the race. I've run 28 marathons and this was in top 10 hilliest. Drive the course beforehand if you can because you can't trust their description. (though you can't drive the trail, but really no significant hills there) -timing mats were a tripping hazard (be careful); they still use chips on your shoe that must be returned -expo and finish area not well-marked. (for example, difficult to figure out where baggage check was). -I ran alone for at least a mile on the path in the woods and didn't see any course markings (somewhere between miles 21 and 23). It was a little unsettling as I didn't know if I was off course. -advertised that chocolate milk would be available at the finish but nearly impossible to find -I didn't see many photographers on the course so if you like to buy marathon photos (like me) you might be out of luck -expo is small (not necessarily an area for improvement, but don't come expecting a big expo). And it's outside so if the weather is bad it would be tough. I didn't love the course as it was not flat as advertised and it wasn't all that interesting. But overall the organization was good. The weather was good for me (30s at start, high 40s at finish) but I think those from warmer climates were freezing. Would I recommend this race? Well, I wouldn't say it's a 'must run' race but it would be a fine choice.

Nice race, swag needs some improving

Plenty of parking at the expo/race start, which is always a plus. Lots of water/gatorade stops and they even changed the gatorade flavors at each stop. The downside, is the swag & post race food/refreshments. When the sponsors name is biggest thing on the medal & shirt, that is nuts. The theme is great, and they really could do so much better on the shirt & medal (which only had a small mention of the half marathon on the back). As for food, bananas, water, small cups of chocolate milk. It was chilly out, and they didn't offer mylar blankets either. With regards to the actual race, my comments relate to the Half Marathon. The best part of the race was running on the paved trails thru the park. Too bad they couldn't have had you on this for more of the race. While overall the race was enjoyable, they still have room for improvement.

Scenic course, but flatlanders, train for hills!

I picked this course for a spring marathon for several reasons, the biggest of which was that it was advertised as 'flat and fast' with a few 'gentle rolling hills'. Positives: 1) Small-medium size race w/ easy access to port-a-potties, food, drop-bags, etc and other pre/post race activities that require long lines at bigger races 2) Nice participant/finisher shirts and medal 3) Start/finish in same location, 4) scenic course that showcased the area well, 5) encouraging, friendly volunteers, 6) adequate aid stations, 7) decent post-race food, 8) good price, no-frills race Main negative: advertised as 'flat and fast' when it is quite hilly! An elevation map is provided, and I noted the course was not truly pancake flat, however, the map did not seem to do justice to the sheer amount of significant hills along this course, especially miles 8-14. That's a significant portion of the course, still early on, that you need to train for and factor in for pacing unless you want to blow through large amounts energy in the first half. The second half on the bike trail is quite scenic, but it twists a bit and has a few short, but steep climbs. Do not lose sight of the fact that the last 6ish miles of the course are a net uphill as well, even if it is slight each mile. If you run through the early hills too fast, this could make these last 6-8 miles even tougher than usual as I found out the hard way. Overall I felt it was a good, solid race, the main complaint again was in how it was advertised. If you are coming from an area that is truly pancake flat, you need to incorporate some hills into your training! I would recommend this course to anyone looking for a well-run and scenic marathon in KS, but I would have a hard time calling this a truly 'fast' course. All that to say, BQ's and PR's were attained with proper training and race planning! Just know that elevation map if you are going after a time goal!! Thank you Garmin/City of Olathe for the hard work on a fun and scenic course. Weather was nice and cool with lots of great volunteers as well!

Nice small Half Marathon

I first ran this half marathon in 2008 when the runners were moved by bus to the start line and it finished downtown. The 2012 race was so much better than 2008, the expo was easy but could use more free stuff. The race having the start and finish line in same location was wonderful. There was plenty of parking and close to start line. The route was easy and not too many hills at all. The route through the 'Great mall' was just boring but rest of route was OK. The last 2 miles were flat and great for the runners to finish strong. The finishing area was congested with non-runners. The race is a wonderful small half marathon with small crowds. A good confidence half and full marathons for runners. The shirt was good and the finisher medal was awesome. They promise the 2013 will be better than 2012. I will run it again.

A pleasant surprise!

This was a fall back from my fall back race. I wasn't able to run OKC this year, due to a scheduling problem, so my next choice was the Eisenhower Marathon in Abilene, but the weather got crazy (NOAA issued a 'severe threat of damage and death' warning), so i though it better i stayed home with my family that weekend. So I fell back to this one, and i'm glad it worked out this way. The weather was as close to perfect as possible and the organization was really nice! The course isn't all that interesting, (strip mall the first couple of miles, neighborhoods and then the out and back bikepath/fitness trail), but pleasant enough. The fitness trail is small 5 foot-ish rolling hills which probably won't show up on Map My Run or your Garmin. Fairly fast course, but a lot of turns and it's narrow in spots. There wasn't just a TON of spectators, but the support was very good for a race this size. The aid stations were well placed and the folks were friendly. Post-race celebration was good. It wasn't a buffet, and i really couldn't eat the barbecue chicken after finishing, but i'm sure it was good. there was a beer tent with free beer for the runners, and a massage tent, but it was crowded. The medal and finisher shirt was nice and i would definitely recommend this race. I thought the organization was really good.

Enjoyable, friendly, mid-size marathon

This was my 3rd marathon, first time doing the Garmin Oz Marathon however and I felt that everything went spot on for this race from packet pickup right down the amazing weather and nice huge medal! The packet/shirt pickup was very smooth. The highlight of the expo was meeting Bart Yasso who signed autographs and spoke at the pasta dinner. He actually ran the marathon too which was pretty exciting! It was probably the most perfect picturesque day you could ask for a mararthon with sunny skies, temps in the mid 60's with a light a variable wind, which is rare for Kansas. I felt that the organization was great and there were plenty of water/aid stations. There were parts of the route where there was lack of spectators as there is a lot of marathons but all the volunteers made up for that. The volunteers were very spirited and enthusiastic along the route at each and every water stop, even at mile 20! It was really neat seeing them all dressed as characters from the Wizard Oz, Dorothy, The Tin Man, The Cowardly Lion, all were there! It was really motivating and greatly appreciated! I came away with three shirts and a huge finishers medal. This years medal was the scarecrow and each year they are going to have a different character so that you will be able to collect all of them, which is a neat idea. You definitely received a lot at this race, which made it a great value! The only things I would possibly change would be to make the expo larger and taking out the section of the route that goes around the Great Mall of the Great Plains during the first part of the race. It was a pretty boring part of the race but fortunately there were many wonderful people running alongside me to keep me distracted. All in all, this is a really nice race with a great theme! I highly recommend it!

Garmin is a fast, enjoyable race!

I have done the Garmin/Oz Olathe Marathon two years in a row, and it's quickly becoming one of my favorite races. Positives: The organization is superb from expo to finish line, and the addition of Garmin as the title sponsor will only make it better. I came away with three shirts (cotton participant and Garmin shirts, plus tech finisher) and a great medal, so it is a good value. The course is very enjoyable if you like a more suburban, even rural, type of setting. It is flat for the most part (just a few hills and grades here and there to keep it interesting), and I found the last half along the trail to be quite nice. I had my fastest time in a couple of years. The volunteers are friendly and well-prepared. Potential Improvements: A larger expo would be nice, though 2012 marked an improvement over 2011. The new location at the Holiday Inn is great. The course tends to be a bit congested until the half-marathoners split at mile 12; it is also exposed for the first few miles, leaving it vulnerable to bad weather (i.e., the 40 mph gusts in 2011). Suggestions: Make your motel reservations early. There are some great places to stay for relatively reasonable prices near the start (Days Inn is nice). I waited this year, and ended up at Econo Lodge. Nice people and near the start, but a motel I would avoid in the future (bad shower, useless breakfast, non-working TV). All in all, this is a really nice race with a great theme. A large number of costumed runners make it extra fun (I think I saw four Dorothys this year). I recommend it wholeheartedly!

Good Job for small race!

What a great run! The weather was great - cool and no wind (for Kansas). Pros: Plenty of aid stations. Many 'Wizard of OZ' costumes (aid stations and runners). First time I've seen two pacers for same time (traded off). Good job by Police and traffic control. First half run on city streets second half on paved bike trails. Still had some cheer stations and a few spectators on bike path. GU stations. Huge finisher's metal - scarecrow (if I only had a brain). Cons: Hard to crew runners on 2nd half. Map needs addresses for GPS. We tried to drive the course the afternoon before but hard to follow on course map. All in all, I'd do it again on my next trip around the 50 States.

Sometimes Simple is Better!

This was my 34th full marathon and 3rd time for Olathe. This is a small marathon, and typically I will pass on a marathon of this size, but I am so glad that I didn't! This was a small but very well organized event. All of the Wizard of Oz characters were there, I even saw a male runner wearing a powder blue Dorothy dress! What impressed me the most was the friendly attitude of the volunteers at packet pickup, and spirited and enthusiastic volunteers along the route, especially at mile 20! The volunteers at this station were dressed as characters from the Wizard Oz, Dorothy, The Tin Man, The Cowardly Lion, all were there except for the wizard! And from the perspective of this chronic BOP'er I greatly appreciated thier support and enthusiasm so late in the race. It was a picturesque day for a mararthon with sunny skies above, temps in the mid 60's, with a light a variable wind, which is rare in Kansas for this time of the year. As with many marathons of this size spectator support was very light, and almost non exsistant on the final 13 miles, but it is the friendly and spirited support of the volunteers that made the effort worth the while. The race begins and ends at Garmin (The Event Sponsor) The first 12 miles runs thru commercial and residential areas, miles 13 thru 23 runs on a paved trail, and the final 3 miles resumes thru residential areas and then ending at Garmin. The finish line was well organized and spacious. And unlike many mararthons that I have done in the past, after crossing the finish line, I did not feel like I was trapped in a box, and unable to make contact with family members who were waiting on the other side. And the finishers medal??? Well that's one huge medal! I needed help carrying it back to my car! The Olathe Marathon AKA Garmin-Oz Marathon is a small no frills event, but I would recommend this event to the 50 staters club. The Olathe Marathon is proof that SOMETIMES simple is better!

Enjoyable, flat, friendly

Very much enjoyed the Garmin Marathon in the Land of Oz. Perfect weather this year, mid-40s at start, sunny, no wind. Race sets up in two phases - 1st 11+ miles around the streets of Olathe, last 14+ on a paved trail. I was wary of the out-and-back on the trail, but the marathon is small enough that the crowd is spread out and the scenery is nice enough (lots of wooded area, shade) that you don't get bored seeing the same thing twice. Lots of encouragement among runners passing each other heading back too. Aid stations were good. One suggestion to the race committee: encourage the GU volunteers to space themselves a few hundred yards ahead of the water so that runners have time to intake and then wash out at the water stop. Medal was great, my favorite I've received so far. Race shirt was cotton, but finishers in the full got a nice tech shirt (short-sleeve). Massage at end was very helpful. Food selection was below average (yogurt, bananas) - I didn't partake in the free chicken sandwiches though. Overall, definitely a nice course, can be fast, fun atmosphere. Had a great time!

Course too long?

Pros: 1. Incredible weather, great organization 2. Fast, very flat course 3. Nice post-race and great tech T Cons: 1. 4hr pacer was way off pace and subsequently had to make up for it the rest of the race. Not as advertised. 2. No chocolate milk at finish = fail 3. Course was too long by .20 (too many runners claim this same thing to pawn it off on zig-zags.) Major fail. 4. Can you set up a 'runner's line' for the food? I stood in line for a chicken sandwich behind 30 non-runners. Not cool. Overall, I loved this race. Perfect weather, good org, set a PR. I will be back but would like to see some improvements as it continues to grow. Also, how about putting some bands along the course? Not original, but really helps especially when you have small crowd support.

Great mid-size marathon

Great organization, nice course with great fans and support. Two suggestions, widen the area near the water stops (a must) and neighborhood roads during the first part of the race. They were unnecessary narrow-race is growing and runners need more space.

Thanks for all of your hard work!

This race has really come of age. Great commitment by City of Olathe and Garmin. Well organized in all aspects: packet pick up; expo; pre-race; course; aid stations; volunteers; and post race. No weaknesses. Out and back on paved trail through beautiful park made for a very good race.

Great smaller marathon, flat and easy access.

Lucked out and had awesome weather (38 degrees at start and NO WIND!) Good, relatively flat course. Good out and back section on a paved trail for most of last part of course with a few MINOR rolling hills. I was suffering from a calf injury but both my training partners PR'd. Very easy to get to and plenty of parking. A little short on porta-potties but that seems the norm. Not a lot of spectators but great volunteers (espectially the fluid station where all were dressed as OZ characters).

Great Race for the Novice

PROS: The course was beautiful, very flat, and very well marked. Never felt lost or uncertain of the course. Ended up with three shirts, a nice medal, and a great post-race party. Porta potties seemed adequate, could have had better line formation. While spectators were far apart, they were enthusiastic. CONS: If you have allergies to tree pollen, you may not like the second half. Although they listed three Gu stations, two of them ran out before I got there, and I was mid-pack. I also noticed that one of the watering stations was using fire hydrants & trash cans for water, which caused illness in the R&R in Las Vegas. All told, I would run this again in a heartbeat. It was a fun race & a beautiful day.

Windy, but fun.

The race was very cold and windy (duh, it's April in Kansas), but overall flat and enjoyable. The first half was uneventful around the mall and on the streets of Olathe, with the second half having great scenery through the bike trail. The support staff was awesome and the aid stations were well spaced. The finisher tech shirts were good quality with a great front design, only bummer was by the time I finished there were no ladies fit left in my size. Massage tent was great and the food was good. Overall, great first marathon experience. Small race, but good atmosphere despite cold, windy conditions.

Awesome!

This race was billed as The Oz Marathon, and it was a very cool theme and a whole lot of fun. Quite a few runners were dressed as characters from The Wizard of Oz. There were ample portacans on the course. Aid stations were well spaced with a good variety of fluids and foods, and volunteers were friendly. The course is mostly flat. A few miles are run around a mall, but most of it is an out and back on a paved bike trail that is largely protected from wind. Logistcally it was an easy venue as the marathon starts and ends in the parking lot of Garmin World Headquarters in Olathe, KS. There was plenty of parking and we found a space only about 50 yds from the start line. The finish area was not far away either, just on the back side of the Garmin building. The finisher's medal is not fancy but it is unique. The shirt is a decent tech shirt with Oz Marathon graphics on the front and a blank back, a nice difference from the usual sponsor billboard back.... We stayed at a LaQuinta which was less than 2 miles from the start, just up the street on West 151st St and they were very accomodating, would stay there again.

Windy start - fun race

Hearing the wind howl outside when I woke up race morning made me question what I had gotten myself into! Bucking a 20 to 30 mph wind from the parking garage to the start line at Garmin HQ re-inforced the feeling that this might not really be want I want to do today! Running into the wind through a mall parking lot and jumping over rabbit roadkill made me wonder why Dorothy ever wanted to come back to Kansas!! But then we moved on to the residential streets of Olathe and onto the bike path along a pretty stream, sheltered from the wind and the run became more and more enjoyable. The out-and-back on the path allowed you to encourage others and receive the same encouragement in return. Just to make sure that I wouldn't forget the wind, the last half mile to the finish was out in the open and left me with a reminder of what Kansas is all about. It was a fun race - well organized, small, friendly - and I would recommend it. There are plenty of hotels in the area and the Microtel I stayed at was more than accommodating for a late checkout. I guess I missed out on the finisher's shirt, so it would be nice if they were near where the medals were handed out - or maybe they were and I just missed them, in which case, oh well!

Good Marathon with potential

Good stuff: Volunteers were some of the best I've seen even with the cold, windy weather. Plenty of water stations/Gatorade - even gummy bears, Twizzlers, and pretzels. The course: although the first part was really windy, the second half was on a scenic bike trail out and back - well protected and relatively flat. The last mile was a little tough, with headwind and small uphill. Fun to see all of the Wizard of Oz costumes! Plenty of places to stay and eat in Olathe. Potential: course seemed to measure long on my Garmin Forerunner (and others), but not a huge deal. By the way: where was Garmin? They would have been a popular booth at the expo. I agree with other comments that it would have been nice to use their facilities before the race, especially with the chilly weather, but maybe it's a security issue. This isn't a big-time marathon with a huge number of spectators... but if you're looking for a well organized, friendly, and fairly flat course in Kansas, this marathon is the one! I'll be back, and maybe with Toto too.

A Nice Marathon Experience

I'll divide my comments into the three ratings categories: Course: The course is relatively flat, with just enough ups and downs to keep it interesting. I really enjoyed the miles on the running trail... very relaxing and scenic, if you like running in the woods with parks and streets every so often. The first several miles, though, are exposed if it is windy (as it was in 2011... gusts in the high 20 mph range). More notably, though, is that the course is quite crowded until the full and half split. This would be an area for improvement. Organization: Olathe is well organized and offers a good value for the entry fee. We received both a cotton race shirt and a nice, tech, finisher shirt. The medal is quite nice, too. More importantly, perhaps, is that the race is well supported, with ample and well-stocked aid stations. If you are used to big races, though, keep in mind that the stations are shorter. More than once I skipped the first table, only to find that I had missed the water and was left with Gatorade. My mistake, of course. One thing I wondered is why Garmin, the title sponsor, didn't allow access to their HQ building before the race. That would have opened up some restrooms as well as a place to warm up a bit. (On that note... they do need more port-a-pots at the start.) Fans: Although Olathe is a Kansas City suburb, this felt a lot like a rural or small-town race. As such, you won't see big crowds of fans. The path, in fact, is sparse except for the aid stations. However, those who turn out are energetic and friendly. Some residents in the neighborhoods had stuff like water and pretzels for the runners. That is always cool to see. All in all, Olathe is a fun, enjoyable race... well worth the trip to the Kansas City area.

Good marathon but it could be better.

Even though it was very cold, the marathon course was enjoyable and the 3:40 pacers were good. The packet pick up should have had a table for buying throw-away gloves due to the cold weather. Also, we should have been given space blankets at the finish. And, it would have been nice if Garmin would have been present before or after the race. I think the Oz theme is fun and more can be done with it. I am glad I ran it even though I was so cold that I didn't stick around to pick up my third-place age group award.

Well organized event

My husband and I stayed at Holiday Inn Olathe Medical Center and they were very hospitable and courteous, allowing for a late checkout. Small "expo" at packet pick-up - mainly a few vendors handing out information and deals. Shirts are a big hit! Nice design on gender-specific fit. Thank you! AND all marathon finishers also receive a tech shirt. Cool! The course is "open," however the city of Olathe did an excellent job protecting us from any traffic. The first half is through town, while the second half is on a paved trail. There are a few minor hills, but certainly nothing to panic about. Volunteer support on the course is impeccable. What the spectators lack in volume they make up for in enthusiasm, but there really aren't too many. I am looking forward to running this race again!

A great experience.

Well organized event. For those who like small races, it is perfect. Folks are extremely friendly and I really am grateful for the lady at the package pick-up who let me get my packet even though I was 30 minutes late and they were already packed up. That's the willingness of these folks to make your experience great. Wind was incredible as you traversed the high school parking lot during the last mile, but hey, it wouldn't be Kansas without wind! The post-race chicken sandwich was great, but I think they ran out of smoothies. I recommend they save some for the marathoners and don't give them all out to the 5K and 1/2 marathoners.

Race: A. Race org: C. Post race: B-

Waiting in line at Bass Pro Shops just to get a race number that could have been emailed seemed silly and a waste of time. Marathoners, half marathoners, and 5kers had to get in the same line. They needed emergency contact info before they could give you your number. The area was tiny and there wasn't much to exhibit unless you wanted to buy a bass boat. The race seemed to run a corner every block until the half and full separated and then the full was one long run out and back on a bike trail. Didn't get to see much of Kansas or Olathe. The white cotton t-shirt at the expo was a bit disappointing and 'all in one'. Fortunately there was a finisher's tech shirt after the marathon. Post race food although advertised as 'a taste of Olathe' turned out to be grilled chicken teriyaki (not bad). And that was it for the food that I saw. There was free beer and canned tea. The beer (BL Lime, BL, Mich Ultra, and Shock Top) was good for those of us who like beer. Conspicuously absent was Garmin. Although the race started and ended at Garmin HQ, Garmin was nowhere to be seen. What a missed opportunity to push their products. Whatever the downside, the folks of Olathe were simply great. Super nice and super supportive. And although I wouldn't consider Olathe a destination, the flat course was a plus even if the weather that day was a bit of a challenge. If you like small, homey, and want to knock out 26.2 miles in the middle of the country, this is a good race. Water stops were plentiful and the volunteers were as good or better than any other race. The bling was nice. Not amazing and not terrible. Just a nice addition to the collection. I was a bit surprised the race was using the old tag/chip technology (not even Champion Chip). Changes I would make: different t-shirts for each race. Different location for the expo. Different lines for each race entry. More post-race food/options. Use the 'new' d-tag or b-tag vice the 'clip and return' chips. Get Garmin on board!

Small, Friendly Marathon

I ran the newly christened 'Oz Marathon' (formerly the Olathe Marathon) in 2011. Course: The course was newly redesigned this year. The first mile started (with a cannon blast) in front of the Garmin world headquarters. This first leg included the only 2 hills of consequence (actually a long freeway overpass). This led to 6 miles of loops through and around the Olathe Medical Center and a big loop around the near deserted Great Mall of the Great Plains. Miles 7 through 12 pushed through some typical residential streets (even dodged some road kill!). Finally, at mile 12 the 1/2 marathoners peeled off and the full headed on to 14 miles on a paved out and back trail, mostly through nice forested woods (with one unintentional steeplechase pool to run through!). The end of the course consisted of an empty loop around a high school parking lot before the finisher's chute on the Garmin campus. The course was flat, but not particularly fast, largely because of the near constant strong wind exposure, especially the first 12 miles. There were no sights of interest to see, and no music to speak of. The woods were my favorite part of the course and they helped a little with the wind. The finishing mile was a bit of a let down as it was just an empty parking lot right into a nasty headwind. Spectators are few and tend to clump at certain spots, but those who are there are extremely enthusiastic, some even in costume. Really supportive and made you laugh. The out and back and accessible course makes it easy for loved ones to see you on the course multiple times. The weather was deceptively cold (37 at start, but a 20 mph wind which brought the windchill down to 27) it was apparent this caught a lot of people by surprise. The very strong headwinds were the most challenging aspect of the course. One thing I should note: although the course is technically not closed, at no time did I experience any delays for traffic. The running lanes were plenty wide enough to pass people without going into traffic. There were hordes of police and volunteers working (Thanks, y'all!), and the course felt safe at all times. Strong work! Logistics: Website was informative and included pdfs of all courses (although the final pdfs didn't show up until the last week before the race). Email address for questions was posted, but was essentially non-responsive. Registration was via Active.com, by snail mail, or at the packet pick-up. Packet pick-up was easy and organized at the local Bass Pro Shop. Goodie bag included a nice cotton-T, a couple of coupons, and a free sample of soap. A few tables sufficed for the expo, but I did snag a nice water bottle. No speakers or organized feeds. Plenty of parking at the start (I recommend the parking structure as it's close to the finish). Number of full participants was 478, but start was also joined by 836 half-marathoners. Needless to say, the 14 porta potties provided at the start were far too few and proved frustrating to a lot of folks. The aid stations were plentiful (about 1.5 miles apart) and well-staffed and stocked. There were 2 GU gel stations (one is passed twice, which is nice) and gatorade was the sports drink. Even had gummies and pretzels at one station. Porta potties at each aid station except one. (Of course, since most of the course was in the woods, I suppose that's not as much of an issue!). At the finish, timing chips are taken off rapidly, and a nice technical finisher's T is given, as well as an immediate print out of your finishing time. Food included bananas, bagels, and yogurt. A nice surprise were free grilled chicken on a bun which really hit the spot. Also, there was a beer tent for those that imbibe. A massage tent proved very popular, as was a warmed school bus for those with hypothermia. Unfortunately, no foil blankets were at the finish on such a chilly day (I didn't stop shivering until I got home). Overall: I think the Oz Marathon folks did an extremely fine job with the race. The aid station personnel, police, and spectators were as friendly as can be. In fact, since the second half of the race was up and back, the competitors themselves (even the leaders) were shouting encouragement to each other as we passed on the forest trail, which was very cool. The course is not very scenic (the Waddell and Reed Marathon in KC is better for that) and there are a few logistical rough edges, but it's flat, well-organized and friendly. Be sure to watch the weather carefully, prepare for the wind, and I think you'll have a great time!

A really fun, nicely organized race.

This is my first time running the Oz Marathon (rebranded from the Olathe Marathon) and I really enjoyed it. It was really cold and windy at race start, but once we got going I thought it was fine, though still windy. The course was fairly flat. The first 12 miles were on streets; the rest was an out-n-back on a bike/running path. There were plenty of great aid stations and spectators at several different places. The out-n-back was nice because we were all encouraging each other as we passed by. I'm also very happy with the FREE kids' race where they ran about a mile and got a number, medal and shirt. My 3-, 6-, and 8-year-olds all did it and and loved it; they can't wait to wear their shirts and medal to school on Monday. Also, plenty of nice hotels within 1 mile for travelers. The 7 a.m. start also is nice so you don't need to "run' back to the hotel and change before check-out time. Overall, a really nice race that I would love to run again.

NICE SMALL MARATHON

I stayed at the Olathe Fairfield Inn. They were great and even had breakfast and snacks available before the race. Dinner at Zios was good too, but go early. I enjoyed most of the course - especially the bike path. The first 4 miles around the parking lot of the mall were less enjoyable. I'd make that part shorter and either go through more neighborhoods or more bike path. Perhaps a loop around the Nazarene campus could be worked in. The other people on the bike path were nice and cheered us on. And the cross-country boys actually spoke to us and encouraged us. I started with the 4:50 pace group and met lots of nice runners from the local area. Recommend this race for KS!

Overall a good race

Good: 1. Lucked out and had great weather 2. Nice finisher's shirt. Even better, I managed to miss the shirts after I finished as I had flight to catch, and race director quickly mailed me one. Great service! 3. Good start/finish area - well laid-out, with plenty of food, porta-potties, etc. 4. Greenway/bike path was attractive 5. Although not a selling point for me, they had many pacers (perhaps too many- see #2 below) 6. Spectators were great - not many, but you shouldn't come to Kansas anticipating Boston-like crowds. Fans were super supportive! 7. Easy/free parking at the expo and start/finish Not-so-good: 1. While I enjoyed the greenway, 14 miles on it seemed like a bit much. Also, with it being open, there were issues with kids/cross country kids and bikes nearly running me down at times. It would be nice to see other scenery in Olathe as well. 2. The abundance of half-marathon people... I understand why courses overlap but I always enjoy marathons more when we are on separate courses. This is especially true here, as there were a ton of pacers for the half (and full too), so you were dodging many clusters of folks. Race management did a good job with this one. Looks like they are re-branding for 2011 so it will be interesting to see how it grows. If you're looking to run in Kansas, and like smaller marathons, this is a good one.

Great small marathon

This was my 51st marathon, and I have to say: Wow! For a small race, it was almost perfectly organized from packet pick-up to removal of timing chips. Everyone - from the packet pick-up, to course marshals, to policemen, to the finish line folks - was extremely friendly and enthusiastic. No complaints from me! It should be noted the second aid station did not have water - though that's not a problem for me, as I carry my own water for the first few miles to avoid the chaos at the first few aid stations. I could have done without the wind but I knew to expect it when I signed up. There isn't anything the race director can do about it, but be warned that it is windy. I stayed at the Comfort Suites and any questions or requests were cheerfully addressed. The hotel was less than 10 minutes from the start/finish, with lots of dining options. I highly recommend that hotel. Job well done, Olathe!

Better than in '08

I ran this marathon in 2008. This is a new course that starts approximately where the old course ended. Some elevation change, but no big hills. For the KC area, it was relatively flat. From mile 12 to 24, you run on a bike/walking trail that is along Indian Creek. It's picturesque, and more importantly, because you are running through woods, it's out of the Kansas wind. There were a smaller number of runners than in 2008, but that may have been due to its being canceled in 2009, and also the Eisenhower Marathon occurring on the same day. Overall, a good experience.

Good, small marathon; improving.

Nice, small marathon. Course is mainly flat, through residential and business areas, and paved trails. Don't expect many spectators. Wonderful volunteers, organizers and emergency people. Only negative: I was running with the 4:50 pace group and there was no water at the first or second aid stations. There was Gatorade only at the first aid station, and nothing at the second. I'm sure organizers will correct this error.

Good small-town race

I made a last-minute decision to drive down and do this race, as I was scheduled for a 20-mile training run on race day. I had no expectations and came away satisfied with the race as a whole. Registration/packet pickup and location: It took only a few minutes to register and pick up my cotton t-shirt, number, and chip on Friday evening. There are plenty of hotels and dining options in the area. Course: The course is very flat, as advertised. The first 6 miles are a monotonous grind around a deserted mall and business area. Mile 6 through 12 are through average, if unspectacular, residential areas. Mile 12 to the finish are an out-and-back along a relatively nice bike path. The path is open to the public, so you must be aware of bicyclists, walkers, and pets! The loop around the high school just before the finish is desolate, and you have to run over speed bumps. If you're looking for thousands of screaming fans to energize you through the race, you're not going to find that here. Fan support through most of the course is nonexistent. The few fans there were, however, cheered mightily for everyone. Course management and support: The course is well managed, with a slew of police handling traffic and plenty of volunteers directing you in the right direction. There are ample water stops and 3 GU stations are the most I've seen at any race. One issue with the water/GU stations is that most of them along the bike path are staffed only on one side, meaning that you will have people going in opposite directions coming into them at the same time, which makes for some difficulties. Lastly, at some spots in the residential areas, the cones laying out the course barely give you enough room to pass another runner without stepping into traffic. Finish/post-race: Once across the line you quickly receive water and your medal and get your chip removed. You're directed to a tent to receive your finisher's technical shirt and a very nice Dri-Fit hat. A few minutes later you can receive a slip of paper with your race time/pace and placement on it - a very nice touch. The finish area had good food choices - bananas, bagels, and yogurt. The chips and cheese from Taco John's were a great way to get some salty food, although I passed on the tacos! They also had smoothies and the Boulevard beer was stellar. Summary: I thoroughly enjoyed this race. If you're looking for large crowds, this isn't for you. If you want a small, well planned race with very friendly runners, organizers, and support staff - and don't mind racing in solitude - this is a great race for you.

A great, small marathon event

This year it was hotter than expected, but not too bad. The course is really nice. It is run in pleasant neighborhoods and on a trail that goes out to 18 miles and then returns to the finish. The trail is also used by people on bikes, and several older ladies were dangerous on their bikes, running me off of the trail a couple of times. All in all, the marathon was an excellent event on a beautiful day.

Kudos to Olathe!

This was a thoroughly enjoyable, mostly flat marathon experience with just enough inclines to make it interesting. The substantial part of the race that is run on a paved nature trail was perfect for focusing on the task at hand and also for buffeting some of the fairly strong headwinds. Besides those winds, it was a perfect day for a marathon. The race organizers did a great job putting this one together. With the modest entry fee, free massages, bonus finisher's shirt, and baseball cap at the finish line, this is one marathon that should not be missed for anyone looking for a smaller marathon with a friendly vibe.

Expensive Training Run

I had originally signed up for the half-marathon, which they re-scheduled for the following weekend. The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly: The Good: More than enough porto-potties. Since the marathon was not being run, there were fewer people than expected, so no lines. But even if the marathon had been run that day, there were enough units to keep the lines to a minimum. Aid-Stations were plentiful and very well run. Kudos to the volunteers. Course support by police. Awesome. There were more police keeping traffic at bay than there were spectators. The Bad: The course was boring and uninspiring. In the race literature, they evoke memories of the historic old west and the stage coaches that ran through this area. We had to run around a mega-mall parking lot, through an undeveloped business district, through very dull residential neighborhoods, on a bike path, and ended with a run through a high school parking lot. YAAAWWWNNN. Olathe does have some historically significant places, but we saw none of them. To make matters worse, in some of the residential parts the cones were so close to the side of the road that you could not run two people side-by-side. The wind. Nothing the race people could control, but its late March/early April in Kansas. Wind is all but assured. False advertising on the beer and smoothies? When I finish a race, the last thing I want to eat is something sweet to eat or drink. Give me something salty, or savory. They advertised free beer from a local brewery. On the course at mile 11.5, they had a sign stating this fact. When I finished the race, I bypassed the sweet items and headed straight for the beer table. To my great dismay, the vendor gave a very apologetic speech saying that Kansas rules prevent the serving of beer before 10 a.m. The race started at 7 a.m., so unless you were running a 2:30 -3:00 half, you either were not getting beer, or you had to wait in the windy, cold weather until 10 a.m. If you waited, then I see a 12-step program in your future. Grrrr. I did not get my beer. I also never did see the Smoothie King vendor that was advertised. The Ugly: Lack of spectators. As I mentioned above, there seemed to be more police than spectators on the course. Those that did show up were very much appreciated. This was the first race where I could honestly say that I thanked EVERY spectator from mile 2 - 12. The medals. Very cheap looking. There were basically pre-printed stickers stuck to both sides of the medal. Bottom Line: The entry fee for this race was $50-$80 for the half depending on how far out you registered. I definitely did not feel like I got my money's worth. I would do this race again ONLY as an expensive training run, and nothing more. I would give it a D+ or C- grade.

A great race.

In the beginning I was disappointed the race was rescheduled. I understand now that the race directors had a very difficult decision to make and I believe they made the right decision. The course was very well marked, with plenty of aid stations. The volunteers were awesome and I never had to wait more than a second to receive a drink at any of the aid stations. Hats off to the fabulous job the traffic officers did. Every intersection was controlled and I felt safe the entire time. The course is very flat and fast. The course is a huge improvement from the old route. Only thing I would recommend changing would be the medals. The medals are small and not that attractive. But, I personally run the races for the memories, not the medals. I will be back next year.

Disappointed - not flat, weather issues

I ran the half-marathon. This was my eighth. The favorable items include: great traffic control, perfect starting time, easy packet pickup, GU at mile 8 (not always for halfs), plenty of aid stations and porta-potties, and awesome pacers (almost) - the one I wanted was 10 minutes off pace (behind). The staff was very willing to respond to earlier emails I had in the months before the race. Main complaints: I drove 4 hours (twice - once for the first and then the final race), got my packet and was watching TV in my hotel when I found out it was rescheduled (not more than 2 hours after I picked up the materials). I wish that they would have mentioned they were considering postponing when I got my materials. The shirt and medal were cheap. There was no food at the end. I'd like to know what my entry money went for. The clock was broken, so I didn't know my finishing time. The weather really hurt what could have been an enjoyable time. First snow, then wind that drastically drained me. I know they had to make a difficult decision to postpone the race, which I feel was warranted, but those who came long distances had to shell out many extra dollars to enjoy this race, without many perks. I have run many flat half-marathon courses, and those that think this is flat are definitely wrong!! The course is a challenging course with a few hills and many inclines. At least now I can cross Kansas off of my list of states!!!

Disappointed

I ran the half marathon on 4/4/09. The course was very narrow - at some points it was less than 6' wide. It was very boring, and when I crossed the finish line, there was no water. I guess it was gone?

Great first-time half

Last November I set a goal of running my first half marathon and chose Olathe. I loved it. With no previous experience, I found every step - from registration to packet pickup to the race itself - to be easy. For what it is worth (from a newbie), here is what I liked. - I have Type I diabetes and I had some questions. The organizers returned phone calls and answered my emails. Great responsiveness. - I loved the new course. Much of the race ran through residential areas of Olathe. Unlike comments about previous courses, I didn't find the new course boring. - Excellent traffic management, with volunteers or police at every intersection on the entire course. I didn't see a single car slow down a runner. - The start was great. Since the full marathon was canceled due to bad weather on 3/28, parking was easy and close. Porta-potties were available in abundance. The Garmin location offered wind protection for my family as they waited for the race to start. - The spectators were few but almost every volunteer offered encouragement and smiles. My favorite: the Bikers for Runners aid station. Something about Harley riders offering encouragement, handing out liquids and picking up the trash made me smile. - The pacers from Runners Edge were abundant and encouraging. - Call me goofy, but I loved hearing my name announced as I crossed the finish line. The runners, runners' family members and volunteers were cheering. Very fun. So... in summary: I loved the event and I only have two negative comments. The t-shirt and medal are cheap. I know it is a cost issue, but I would have loved to get a better shirt that I could wear when I run. I will run Olathe next year.

Decent Race

I moved to KS in February, and have run both the Olathe and KC Marathons. Both have an issue that I don't care for: a marathon course that merges with a half-marathon course to finish. If you are running sub-3 or thereabouts, you will be dodging and weaving walkers and joggers, often in pairs or small groups at that point, especially in the aid stations. This could be an easy fix (e.g., split the finish, which would be logistically more difficult for organizers; or split the road in half, and put marathon aid stations on left, half on the right). The course was fine, but definitely be prepared to suffer through the Kansas wind. The food at the finish was lacking. I know they were sponsored by Krispy Kreme, but when I asked for someone to open a box, the person said they were for sale! That was silly, to say the least. Finally, the massage line was long, filled with half-marathoners, so it would have been nice to split that line as well. I will run again; I hope they will iron out the kinks.

The usual Kansas wind on a flat course.

i actually ran in the half (my first ever) and everything about the race was very well organized it seemed to me... except one thing: There were only 2 porta-potties at the starting area for the half. With over 600 people there to run, that was huge problem. Also, the man on the PA system did nothing to help this by not explaining what to do about it. with the last shuttle getting there about a half hour before the race's start, I would expect that I wasn't alone in planning on using the bathroom before I ran. Besides that major problem, everyone was very helpful and encouraging along the course, and i would definitely run this race again.

cold and boring

This was my 14th half marathon, and my take on it: Packet pickup was fast and easy, and I loved the mall! We got a good deal on a hotel in Lenexa, which was a short drive to the start. There was plenty of parking and plenty of buses to take us to the halfway point where the half marathon began. But at that point, it was terrible. We were so cold waiting on the race start that our teeth chattered and we shook uncontrollably! We sought refuge from the bitter, fierce winds next to a building but it was of little help. Our "quads" were frozen from the start. There was no timing mat at the start... didn't like that. There were plenty of aid stations, porta-potties and water stops with friendly volunteers. The course was very boring, which, in conjunction with the brutal winds, made for a long race. Some of the roads were in bad shape, but traffic control was good. Post-race food was lacking - to say the least - but the massage was very good. The t-shirt was plain but the medal was ok... although, not everyone got the same medal for the half, which was weird.

We shall not talk about the wind

I ran the half and thought I would add my two cents worth since I haven't seen any comments about it. Organization was good. Police and traffic control were excellent. Aid stations were great even though the wind and cold disoriented some volunteers who couldn't tell water from red Gatorade ;-). Having only two port-a-potties at the start was unforgivable. Having no place to get out of the cold and wind until the start was bad until some kind soul let us in the main building for 5 or 10 minutes. The post-race massage was like showers and dishwashers (a gift from God). Medals and T-shirts were ho-hum, but okay. If you are in the area, run it.

Few reasons to run this one

Course was pretty flat and could be fast without the wind. Plenty of water and Gatorade. Few fans, but no big deal for me. T-shirt was cruddy. Seriously 100% cotton? Post-race food: plain bagels and very green bananas. Not that I eat a lot after 26.2, but that was ridiculous. Pre-race bathrooms were very inadequate.

Their website said that those with headphones would be disqualified, but the picture of the female winner crossing the finish line clearly shows her listening to her iPod. Why wasn't this an issue?

What a fun freakin' race!

Yep... the Kansas scenery was a blast: Beautiful open sky, spacious country roads. I had 2 problems, both of which could be construed as my fault. First, screaming like a girl at the sight of a dead deer on the side of the road. I just saw it out of the corner of my eye and I nearly soiled myself. And there was a good-lookin' lady there to see my unfortunate reaction. :o( So much for being studly, eh? Then came the guy who almost hit me with his truck around 22-23. Still, the police did a good job of protecting us, and the course was well marked. I really liked the medal. I also liked how the last 1/4 mile on an uphill kind of separated the winners from the losers. Freakin' awesome! I have crossed Kansas off my list and probably won't be back because it's so far away from home, but the race itself and cool medal make it worth returning. If you're thinking about doing Kansas, do it in Olathe! The sunrise and open country in the first few miles seemed to epitomize what this race was all about: Splendor and hills. This was my first of 2 in 2 days, and it was a great warm-up for the race in Xenia, Ohio the next day.

1/2 marathon needs a lot of work.

After completing the 2008 1/2 marathon, I was very dissatisfied, but to be fair, most of my negativity resulted from the ridiculously poor preparation at the start of the race. (1) The idea of being transported to the start is silly; just create a course where you start and finish in the same place. Or at least organize the pick up so the lines of people are broken up by race (marathoners to the right, 1/2's to the left, etc. - we got on the bus for the 1/2 almost by accident). (2) Having only two restrooms available at the 1/2 marathon start is beyond ridiculous; anyone who has attended a race in their life knows there is always a run on the restrooms prior to a race, and many (30) racers did not get to use the restroom prior to start and some stayed after the start to use it. (3) Of course, this wouldn't have been a big deal because we have chips, right?! Wrong - there was no "mat" at the 1/2 start, so the chips were useless to us - but we were responsible for them. The organization for this race has to improve; it has been going on for too many years now to have these types of problems.

Not bad, but not great...

As another comment states, the 2008 race was very cold and very windy! The wind was so bitter that I wore a hoody with the hood UP for the entire 26.2 miles due to the chill! The first 80% of the course was through the country on highways with traffic, which can get boring and irritating after a while. There was a lot more uphill running than I expected. There were NO spectators aside from aid station personnel and a few family/friends of participants here and there. On the positive side, the aid station organization/supply, event staff, and police presence were all EXCELLENT! Overall, it was worth running once, but I probably won't repeat the Olathe Marathon.

High headwinds, but friendly and nice

Very friendly volunteers and helpful policemen. Course gently rolling but cold headwinds slowed things down and kept long sleeves on for the duration. Not too much to see along highways - town was more interesting toward the end. Nice medal and massage tent at the finish. Cheap generic cotton t-shirt and lack of food at finish were minor complaints. All in all, a nice run.

Well executed race

My third marathon overall. I picked the race I was hoping for, with cool weather (and it got cooler than expected, due to a steady headwind... which I can't blame anyone for). Aid stations every 2 miles up until 20, and then every mile. Great work from the volunteers. Lots of open road and rolling terrain, with wind. Amazing massage service pos- race! Many experienced runners with the 50 states club, which made it fun.

Great, organized course with more than enough wind

As this was my first marathon, I'm not sure how valid my information is, since I have nothing to compare it to. There was a few hills around Mile 16 and 17, but nothing too serious. The course double-backed three times, one stretch of which was over a mile long each way. The volunteers were very helpful and organized, with water and Gatorade at every aid station (Gu at Mile 17 station). A couple of things I was disappointed in were the wind and the lack of spectators. At least 20 mph headwinds making the run about 50% more difficult were present, and making it that much more difficult. The people that were there were great, but there seemed to be a slight shortage of spectators.

Not for the easily bored or weak bladder-ed!

Overall, the race course was not such a difficult one to run, with some inclines here and there, but mostly flat and well marked, so it was clear where to go and easy to get there. However, the wind was beyond what I expected, and for most of the course I was "crying," holding onto my beanie, and wiping away the sniffles, with my frozen hands (despite gloves). If this race could be put on less-windy roads (such as ones more sheltered, like by homes or businesses); perhaps that could help deflate that wind that really goes right through you from the open fields! And what can definitely be helped is bathrooms! I needed about double what was there, and at one point made my way off the highway around mile 14 to a gas station! With the wind as it was, I was really chilled and shivery, and just had to go much more than usual! And then it was too cold to sweat, so all the fluid had to come out somehow!! Also, at times the stretches of open fields were tedious, and the other major miles, which were on the highways, were often on concrete where we could just soak up the exhaust! (Yuck...) But, the people were all super nice, encouraging, and there were lots of police to guide our paths and keep us safe. That made it worth it, and a nice experience too, even though I got a time a lot higher than expected. Also got a nice little massage at the end, and my picture taken at no cost, so people are once again very kind there. :)

what were they thinking??

I had read several good reviews of this race and there were positive aspects to it... however, when the school bus pulled up to drop us off at the start line for the 1/2 marathon, there were a total of TWO porta-potties! For over 600 runners! Well, you can imagine the line. Come on, people, this isn't the first time this race has been run. Surely you knew that was not going to be sufficient. Secondly, I know you can't control the weather, but how much would it cost to have a tent of some kind with some heaters for the already-predicted weather situation? If not for the wonderful security guard at a near by office building we would have had to stand in the cold and wind for almost an hour with no shelter whatsoever. Standing in an open parking lot, with temperatures in the upper 30's and 30 mph wind gusts with only two porta-potties, is not the way to start a race. Otherwise, it was a nice enough run. Good volunteers and plenty of water and Gatorade. But please, rethink the other aspects before next year. Luckily I'm a local runner, but if I had driven several hours like some participants I would NOT have been happy with the way we were treated at the start!

Well organized, but very boring course

The point-to-point course was rolling hills in the middle of nowhere, making it a pretty boring run. The weather was cold and windy and this course left no protection from the elements. The race was well organized with plenty of water stops and porta-potties. The medals were nice and there were plenty of refreshments at the finish line.

Honest feedback

The course: Pretty flat; a few small hills but nothing bad. If you're looking for scenery, go elsewhere. Most of the race is in the country, with some in industrial parks. Not that that's bad... just don't have high expectations. Was surprised there wasn't a clock at the halfway point. Wind was rough, but nothing can be done about that. Spectators: Nonexistent, since much of the race in the country. I don't need fans to get through a race, but if you do, go elsewhere. Supplies during race: Plentiful water and Gatorade. One Gu stop, which is basically not worth having in my opinion (if you're only going to have one). Post-race refreshments: Horrible. Plain bagels and very green bananas. Sorry, but that's not acceptable for a marathon. A junior high cross-country race, maybe. T-shirt: Horrible. A 100%-cotton t-shirt? Come on, people. For a $75 entry fee, I expect at least a 50/50 shirt, preferably CoolMax. I almost just handed them back the shirt to donate to charity because it was so lame. Overall: If you want a fast time, your chances are pretty good here. If you want to mark Kansas off your list, this obviously works. If you want anything more than that, go somewhere else.

Blowin' in the wind...

The course itself is okay, but there was a strong wind blowing from the east the entire race. Alas, we basically ran eastward for much of the course, including four miles due east on the highway, without any trees or buildings to shield us from the wind. On the plus side, the police and course marshals were excellent in protecting us from traffic, the fluid stops were well stocked, and the people were generally friendly. I'd recommend this race for someone who needs to run in a Kansas marathon.

cold, windy, very well organized

It was a cold, windy race, but very well organized; they had plenty of parking, warm pre-race restrooms (anything to be out of the cold wind).... Volunteers get an A+. Races can't be done without them. I even had a KRISPY KREME DONUT ON THE COURSE. GREAT TIMING! Thanks to police, race volunteers and running club.

Uninspiring course, excellent organization

This race really came down to three significant factors one should consider when choosing it: 1. The course is completely uninspiring. Much of it is on wide 2-lane or 4-lane state and county roads. It tends to be open and exposed - subject to the wind (of which there was a lot on this day) and the sun (of which, thankfully, there was little - it was overcast for the entire race). There is about a mile of pleasant residential running in the late miles, but that's about it. 2. The organization was flawless. I arrived late the night before the race and picked up my packet on race morning. No problems. The buses and the start were both on time. The finisher's medal is among the best I have seen. 3. Beyond the RD's control is the weather. The weather for this race was cold at the start, pleasantly cool throughout, and significantly windy (out of the east/southeast). Since much of the race was on exposed section roads and highways, you are exposed to whatever the weather throws at you. And remember, this is spring on the plains - it can be anything.

Windy!

I was on pace to set a personal PR, but then the wind hit at mile 14 and we ran right into it until mile 18. Ouch! The weather said Olathe was supposed to be "breezy," but my husband and I were sure we saw Dorthy fly by. Good race otherwise. Not many spectators, but it was well organized and run. Ps. Aid stop #5 was the best! :)

Uninspiring course

I ran the half marathon. The course was one of the most uninspiring I have run (of the 59 marathons and over 60 half marathons I have completed). It was generally on flat rural roads with some long stretches and minimal crowd support. The weather conditions did not help as it was cold and very windy - and much of it a headwind. While the overall organization was pretty good, some improvements could be made. At the half marathon start, there were only two porta-johns for over 640 runners. While busing worked well, runners had to wait an hour or more outside in the cold and wind. An indoor gathering area would have been helpful. With the increased number of runners, a chip start should be considered - not just a chip finish. The finish line announcements were good but the food was below norm for most events. I was disappointed in the time it took for my results to be displayed (1-1/2 hours after I finished) and the lack of knowledge about where to pick up age group awards. I finally gave up. As a past member of several race staffs and a frequent racer and volunteer, I appreciate all the effort the organizers and volunteers put in on this program.

Is it always windy in Kansas...?

Not a bad race overall, and although I expected wind, I was not disappointed to find it here in Olathe. It seemed to me it was in our face most of the time. So, the wind was a bummer but I can hardly blame the organizers for that! The race seemed to be very well organized and I don't think there were any orange cones anywhere else in the country. I felt very safe on this course, and although the wind was a major factor the course was well marshaled and had plenty of aid stations and toilets. Medal was great, t-shirt left a little to be desired and finish area food ok. A pasta party might have been nice before the race. However I enjoyed the race and I hope it does well in the future.

Nice, small-time race

As I continue to travel around this country one marathon at a time, the day had to come when I had to run in Kansas. I have been to Kansas twice before in my life - once traveling through to get somewhere worthwhile and the second time to see Kansas City. Kansas is not an exciting place, and if you want sites and excitement this is not the place to go. It is just simple, basic middle America, a little boring but generally nice. The city of Olathe is just that. Nice, clean, friendly but lacking in excitement and things to do. As for the race itself, it was very well organized and had sufficient support except at the start. Couldn't anyone get the school to open the gym so we could have been inside instead of standing around and freezing for an hour? Not a good idea, and since you seem reasonable and willing to listen, get the school to open its facilities so the runners can stay warm waiting for the race start. The course is - to say the least - boring, without many sites to distract you from the task at hand. Why run through industrial parks? There has got to be something more interesting to let runners see in Olathe. Do not come to Kansas expecting it to be flat. Yes, Kansas lacks hills and mountains and has a boring topography, but it is not flat - it has rolling mounds, which, if you add the wind, makes for a harder run then you would expect. The race organization cannot be blamed for the winds or the weather, but if you add the famous Midwest winds blowing from the east at 20-plus miles per hour to a race run mostly going east, you have a very hard run. The support was not great but sufficed for this race. The finish was well manned and the volunteers were top rate. In all, this was a decent small-town race - well run and well organized. Olathe is not a hot spot or a tourist place, and if you are going to run it, do not drag along family and friends because you really do not want to vacation in Olathe. But next to Kansas City, it is the best race in Kansas if you are trying to get your 50 states done.

Well done

Well organized race. Packet pickup, bag drop and pick up, traffic support, aid stations, food at finish. Course was OK. Wind was brutal! I would call the course flat. Spectators few and far between. The police and volunteers at the intersections were terrific. Thanks to the family that in 24th mile had a card table out with gummy bears on it. You were not there to say thanks to, but it was greatly appreciated!

Well Done Race

Two comments: 1) Incredibly well run race in every way that I can think of that you would measure organization. There were almost no spectators, but if you count the volunteers, they get a 5. It was the coldest, most miserable marathon I have done (out of 43) and they were amazing throughout. 2) If you don't like wind, this is the course from hell. I love a challenge though. If they were easy, everybody would do them. We just hunkered down and plowed through it. The course is flat, with lots of straight stretches.

Good, small-town, ~500-runner race

Good race to run for a "small town" feel - even though it's near a big city and major airport hub (KCI). This is Kansas, though; expect wind - and '08 was no exception. Major criticism: the lack of port-o-jons at the start. I was told that this was a worse issue for the half-marathon start. Overall, a good, mostly flat race and A LOT of aid stations, which were appreciated.

not my best race

Windy and cold, which cannot be controlled by race organizers, but the wind was such that I think it severely slowed me down. Course was largely on a highway, which isn't very exciting. It was a fine run, but I probably wont do it again, solely based on the negative weather and "eh" course.

Motorcycle officers were my fans.

I have never had so many encouraging words from police officers before. Even though I got in early and volunteered at package pickup, the next morning I got lost and had to find the start of the race. Was grateful to the officer who allowed me to drive down to the school. Started 20 minutes late and a motorcycle officer informed me of turns on the course at the beginning and then encouraged me all along the way and informed me when he was going ahead to stop oncoming traffic at intersections. Personal service! Additionally, I kept hearing "you can do it," "you're doing fine," etc. from whomever was on the motorcycle following me. What a delightful new experience! Haven't felt that safe at some big races. Thanks much! Course was mainly flat and on concrete and asphalt. I did Birmingham, AL and Atlanta, GA this year. Those were hills! The wind was very strong and difficult to move against. Was thankful when it was at my back. My other fans were a couple of women who were driving the course and encouraging me and the lady who was eventually behind me. They even met me at the end to give me a ride back to my car at the start. Have read the medal was very nice. OK. When I got to the end, I was informed they had run out and mine would be mailed. Also they didn't have age awards, which is what I was most interested in. Both are to be mailed to me. Course was well marked with cones in place. Agree with comments about port-a-potties, etc. Volunteers were generally helpful and I don't expect many spectators on a course like this. Those motorcycle officers and the ladies in the car were the best! I would suggest this to others because of the helpfulness of volunteers and those magnificent motorcycle cops!!! They and the ladies in the car earned all the stars!!

Give yourselves a pat on the back.

Having read previous race comments on this site, I decided to go give it a go. What I liked most about it is that the runners, volunteers and spectators all seemed to enjoy themselves. There was great banter amongst the runners. Weather was good; wind to be expected. Organizers, volunteers and spectators; you should give yourselves a well-earned pat on the back.

PR

I realize that I'm probably biased because nothing could go wrong for me on this day. Gatorade/sports drink: I liked it. I preferred it watered down. At one aid station, it tasted watered down, and at another, it tasted full strength. No real expectations either way. Port-a-potties: I haven't had the need for these in any race I've run, so I'm lucky enough to use these as places to pass folks. Weather: Anyone going to Kansas and not expecting a little wind isn't familiar with the area. I'm from the area and felt that it really worked to my benefit and kept me cool. Organization: I was impressed with the director's contingency planning for weather hazards and the numerous restrooms at the start. Spectators: Some folks out cheering their dear ones. When I got to Great Plains Mall, I thought I'd see people - and I did; but, it looked like the classroom scene from the movie "Ferris Bueller's Day Off." It made me laugh. It seemed as if the runners at 20 miles had more energy then most of the spectators. They had a great start with a cannon being fired - could have used it to startle the crowd at the mall. Again, it was beyond funny to me. The course: The second half seemed to take a little more effort then the first; but, I really didn't notice any significant hills. I think the website response to the question of hills is well thought out and accurate. The only rise I did not like was at the finish - after 26 miles, my preference would be to coast, instead of kicking uphill to make my time window. I really liked that even though this was a small race, I was always within sight of someone.

Small race with superior traffic control

Traffic protection was superb with seemlingly every police officer and traffic cone in the state of Kansas. Course was hillier and windier than I expected, but temps were good. Easy to get to and ample parking. Few spectators other than those looking for specific runners, but for me that is not an issue. The only thing that was really poor was the sports drink. Based on the aid station volunteers, there were at least 3 different BRANDS of sports drinks - Cramer, Gatorade, and PowerAde. Please standardize on lemon-lime Gatorade Endurance.

Cool weather; great course; new PR; perfect day

The new date made for a day of cool weather. Liked the course - it was a bit complicated and twisty. Setting a new PR by 11 minutes (over my old one, set 25 years ago, when I was 25 years-old) made the day perfect.

Awsome race, not enough port-a-potties.

I loved this race! It was very well organized, and they had more then enough water stands. They did, however, need a couple more port-a-potties. Spectators were really good, and the course was amazing! It went all over the place, with senery changing often. I would recomend this race to anyone.

Nice, well-organized race

This was a well-run race with a lot of the details provided for. The course wasn't my favorite, but it had some nice stretches. The weather was decent, following a night of thunderstorms... a tad humid but not too warm. The volunteers were great and I really can't say any particular thing disappointed me. For a smaller race, they do a great job!

Windy and hilly - but well organized

I was expecting a fairly flat course as advertised but it seemed I was climbing slight inclines all day long - the only flat part of the race was at the end when you go around a small lake in a park. This and the wind just wore me out - at least it was cloudy and a decent temp or it would have been a long day. The finishers medal was a very large bronze medalion with a unique design so that was great. I agree that having the medal handed to you in a plastic bag vs. having someone put it around your neck was sort of a bummer. The sport drink that the volunteers said was Gatorade was terrible! It was so watered down I thought they mixed it wrong but from reading other comments this is the actual way it tastes. Luckily it didn't make me sick but could have been really bad if it had been hot out and you were in need of the sodium. My thanks to the police and other volunteers who made crossing the various roads and intersections safe for all the runners!

Overall - I liked this race

The packet pickup was well organized and the people there were very friendly and helpful. On race morning, it was easy to park a block away from the finish line and ride the shuttle bus to the starting point. The starting area was okay. Spectators could drive there if they wanted to. We had access to the fieldhouse restrooms. It would have been nice to have a place to wait inside had it been colder or raining. The hills were long yet gentle and the course provided a chance to see a few scenic items (small lake and the front of the naval base). We also ran through some rural areas and over the interstate. The water/aid stations were spaced about right although there could have been more port-a-john's. The crowd support was fairly sparse (even through the residential neighborhoods). I recalled seeing a few of the spectators multiple times. Had my family accompanied me to this race, I think they could have repositioned themselves to see me several times along the way. There was a strong wind that day with not much around to block it. It felt good at my back or strong in my face. It picked up even more late in the race. After I finished, I saw a few runners who had to stop a few feet shy of the finish line as the inflatable arch kept blowing over and blocking their path. It may have been wind related; but, it seemed like they started tearing down the finish area a little early. I waited in the massage line for about 20 minutes. When the guy in front of me proceeded into the tent, they abuptly stating that he would be their last customer and the rest of us in line were turned away. Overall, I liked this race and wouldn't hesitate to run it again.

Surprisingly Good

I was pleasantly surprised at the organization of the race. Weather was threatening the day before and organizers were aware and had plans to delay and protect the runners. Race start area was in the open, but used a large high school football field locker room for restroom facilites. So much better than porta-potties, although these were plentiful at the finish. This is a small race that's getting bigger because the race director is listening and has moved the race to friendlier weather conditions (from May - too hot, to March - just about right). I hope the race director notes this comment: Cramer Quickick is not a runner's favorite. I have not ever thrown up during a marathon before, but mile 17 using this inconsistently mixed product was the first time in 9 marathons. Even this did not spoil the run, however since the race is sponsored by Aquafina who is part of the Pepsi group that produces Gatorade I hope that something can be arranged to end the Cramer connection for next year. The crowd is somewhat sparse, given the location of the race, but the finish area is very family friendly, with my wife noting that several kids jumped in to finish with their parents. Wind is part of running in this part of Kansas; if you aren't prepared to run into and with the wind, this may not be the race for you. I also want to compliment the traffic set up and control used during this race. At no time did I feel that I was running with traffic that would cause me any problems. The volunteers were great, with each stop being manned by a particular group representing some of the race sponsors. This race is much better organized than the Charlottesville VA Marathon, which I ran last spring. No concerns with traffic, as I mentioned above. The t-shirt is dated and the medal is dated, unlike the junky t-shirt and reusable medal from Charlottesville. Race directors, keep up the good work; tweak the sports drink and I will be back again in the future. This may become the 50-state marathon of choice for Kansas.

Nice course; well planned race; weak fan support

This is a nice course that is half flat and half gentle climbs and descents. It is run mostly on country-type roads with a bit in residential areas. Aid stations are spaced out just right and increase towards the end. They need to stick with a popular sports drink like PowerAde or Gatorade, etc., and not experiment with some unknown brand that supplies the drink free. The aid station folks were great and almost always ready for us. The race only had about 400 runners so you will run alone a lot during the second half of the race. The finish is nicely done with the last quarter-mile uphill, so you gotta work for it! Complaints: Not enough port-a-johns on the course. Every five miles or so is not enough for a course with no trees or bushes. Lots of complaints on this. RD, put at least one at each aid station through mile 20. You will be thanked for that by the runners and the aid workers! Second, no local fan support. I don't really care about this, but other folks who ran with me really noticed this. People mowing their lawn wouldn't even acknowledge the runners as you ran by their front yard! Third, the post-race food was pretty lame, (except for the Krispy Kremes!). When I finished at about 4:25, there was no water! Nothing to drink. They had bagels, oranges and yogurt. I would expand that a bit. Also, no one put the medal over your neck; they just handed you a medal in a plastic bag. (Nice medal though.) I sound like I am complaining a lot, but actually I liked it enough to give it 4 stars. I am not into the big races. This was a great size for me. Most of my comments above are to help the RD make some changes for the better next year. If I lived nearby, I would probably do this race again next year.

If the devil is in the details...

...then there must be a lot of angels in Olathe and Gardner. For a relatively young, small (but rapidly growing) event, this marathon (with related runs) is one of the best organized I've seen. I gave it 5 stars all around because the RD and volunteers deserve them, but don't expect big-city crowds all along the race route. Talk to your fellow runners, enjoy the birds and redbud trees and have fun. This is a fine example of a solid road race, good for first-timers, with attentive volunteers who know how to hand out water and sports drink, lots of police assistance at intersections, and decent course markings. Packet pick-up is easy, award pick-up is easy, and the March date is seemingly an improvement (I didn't run it when it was held in May, but I've run in the area in summer and know it is hot). The sun came out in '07 around 9:30 and it was beginning to heat up even then. I'd stick with the March date. Another nice feature is that Olathe is outside of Kansas City so you don't have to deal with too much traffic. The interstate gets you in and out fairly smoothly. A quality race; I hope I can revisit it soon.

Well organized and friendly

I had a nice time in Olathe. I recommend it for those seeking a small well "run" marathon. The wind was a factor but the early start was helpful for cooler temperatures. The young man who sang the national anthem set the stage for a great day. Thank you.

Well worth the trip

First, the volunteers: Thanks! Without your support, this race would not be the same. Fans: Where there were fans, thanks. Course: Not the most scenic course, but it had its moments. Rolling hills, great aid stations, middle America neighborhoods - made it worthwhile. Post-race: Awesome job. Well worth the trip. Great race. We were kept up-to-date on race info prior to the start. Shuttle buses flowed, chip pick up very easy, etc. Perfect!!

Excellent, organized race; generally flat course

This race continues to grow and I can see why. It is obvious the race committee continues to fine tune this event each year (this was 5th year). Finish line venue is one of the best and made very spectator friendly. They announce the runners' names long before you finish, so those looking for you can get there to watch. Nice finisher's medals for both marathon and half.

Pretty good but beware of Cramer sports drink

Do NOT drink the Cramer sport drink served at this race unless you've tried it and know it works for you. Volunteers told me it was Gatorade so I thought there was a change to the sports drink listed in the race info but it turns out they were wrong. I ended up developing severe GI problems (runner's trots) and needing a porta-potty nearly every mile. Unfortunately though, the porta-potties were located at about 5 mile intervals, and there were no trees/bushes to hide behind either along much of this rural course. I did what I had to in order to finish but it was by far my slowest, most painful and embarassing marathon experience. Other than that, this race was actually pretty good for a small race. A lot of volunteers, a well marked course with good traffic control, fluids every mile towards the end of the race (every 2 miles until mile 20), and a nice race medal. This year we had mild temperatures, about 60-65 degrees, and it was quite humid due to thunderstorms early in the morning. Probably the toughest aspect of the course was the wind, which got up over 25 mph by noon. There's no telling what the wather might be next year.

Well Worth Your Time

I thought the course was fantastic as it had enough variety with hills and scenery but not especially difficult. The support was phenomenal with plenty of stops close to the end of the course. I thought the organizers did a great job with this race. I would recommend this race to anyone, however weather is always a factor for a race this late in the spring. We were quite lucky because the day before was 90+ highs and humid. Fortunately, race day was actually cool with a constant breeze.

Small marathon with an easy, flat route

How about the weather! Overcast, comfortable temperature and a cooling breeze! Now that is race organization! It was 98 degrees when I arrived in town Friday! This race was so well organized that even the weather cooperated. The buses to the start were flawless. We had a color guard, a fantastic little 4th grader sang the national anthem, then there was the cannon fired to start the race, and the man was in costume! Very well done start! The course was lined with cones, volunteers were everywhere, the course was flat (thank goodness as I kept expecting it to get hot at any moment after arriving in town Friday!), and there was plenty of police and sheriff personnel (even the dog catcher was out to control traffic!). Unfortunately this left nobody in town to be a spectator, or so it seemed. There were rest stops everywhere & I guess the weather had been hot last year and they learned their lesson. A great route, but there are no trees in Kansas from what I saw, and it was a small town so you could not run 26 miles in town&forcing you to run a rural route without shade. Hey, you have to work with what you got, and Kansas is flat and treeless. Thank goodness they did not try to cross those railroad tracks, 30 trains must have passed during the race alone! We were given a great shirt, and earned a great finisher's medallion. The finish line was well done&and it was even a chip timed event! Very impressive for a small town, small race. A very unexpected surprise actually. The race director and his committee did an outstanding job! The only change could possibly be to consider some of the local's suggestions of an earlier start-be it time or date (a few marathons run at 5AM to avoid heat-tough on volunteers though). I might also have a slight complaint that some mile markers were on the opposite side of the road from where we ran, especially when the course was on the left side of the road the markers tended to remain on the right side of the road. But truly a well marked course full of great volunteers. It just doesn't get much better than this! If you don't like the crowds and confusion, and you don't need lots of spectators and fellow runners, this is a great small venue event with flawless execution.

Marathon First-timer

This was my first marathon. I live in this city and was really looking forward to this marathon. The weather was awesome this year, there were plenty of water stops for me but there could have been more porta-potties. It took me over 5 hours to finish but there were poeople sill at the finish line cherring us on as we came across. Overall, this is a small-town marathon, has great volunteers, could use a LOT more spectators and entrants. I had fun overall. Nicely done. (EXCEPT for the finish. I thought I was crossing the finish line only to discover I had to run another half-block to the 'REAL' finish line. Small nitpick but not that big a deal)

Good race, I recommend it.

This is the 4th time I have run this race. It gets better each year. They have fixed the issues from past years. I like this course. It is flat. There is a small hill at the finish, you see as you approach the finish, but there are plenty of spectators cheering you on so I don't recall running up it. They also had bleachers right on the finish line so that you could cheer on your family, friends and other runners. This may be the best set up finish line for spectators and family from all the races that I have run. The weather was better this year. There was cloud cover and a nice breeze. So it was not as hot as years past. The water stops were plenty! They were everywhere. They had both sports drink and water. There was also a GU stop about mile 15. It was properly located just before the water stop. There was lots of course support from the Police and volunteers. There was no way that you could take a wrong turn. I liked the medal, it continues to improve and the T shirt does as well. I really like the design. This was a great race, my fastest time in this race and my 2nd fastest time overall. I highly recommend this run. If anyone has questions, feel free to contact me at my email.

Solid, well done event! No flaws here!

This is a well done smaller race. The pluses include race day packet pickup! Tons, and I mean tons, of friendly volunteers. This is also a small town race so you ran country roads with little traffic (heck they closed a ton of roads for this event). Very friendly racers. I have never seen so many volunteers! And police intersection control was fantastic! They had more volunteers than marathoners! Literally! There were more rest stops than most big races, if that is possible! They even gave out Gu, and in an entire host of flavors! So of the negatives would be zero spectators. I mean when you have a relay associated with a marathon you generally have a good number of spectators...five members on each team generally bring lots of local teams...each runner complete with a set of family and friends watching. Not here, it was an almost spectator free event. Each rest stop had a different fluid replacement drink. Some were clear, some orange, some red, some yellow, no idea who made the drink. Okay three rest stops seemed to be serving Clorox instead of water, but they were all together so it was just one bad stretch that you needed to do all fluid replacement drink...I have blonde hair as I used the bleach to cool myself off...not sure if that is a plus or a minus for the event! A small town run so you ran quiet country roads...but that also means that you did not get to run through tree lined streets with the owners sitting outside drinking coffee (or bloody mary's depending on the part of the country) cheering you on. There was no music on the route...no high school bands, no church groups, nothing. No hot food at the finish...some small races have good food as it is logistically easier to serve small fields. Overall, a good race. Would I go back and run it again? No. But it was well worth the run once. A good shirt, decent medal, good finish line chatter and FREE messages! A very well organized event with no flaws. You can't ask for more than that on a small venue race! Kudos to the race organization team!

Good - Small Race

I enjoyed the race and felt it was well organized. Great race for a group of friends to keep each other company during the lonely stretches. The transportation in the morning was very efficient and allowed for camaraderie amongst strangers. I would agree with others, an hour earlier start would be appreciated.

Great marathon - it's worth the trip to Kansas!

I really enjoyed the marathon. The race was extremely well organized. The course was marked well. Not a lot of shade for a very warm day. The finish line volunteers were wonderful. Everything about this race was good. The course was not too tough.

I thoroughly enjoyed this well-done race.

This was my 7th marathon and I thought it was well done. I enjoyed meeting people from all over the United States (plus 2 foreign countries were represented). The water stops were timely, providing what was needed on a hot day. The course was varied and well manned with traffic flow well orchestrated. I love the T-shirt and wore it on race day. I'm sure I will be wearing it all summer. The medal is beautiful with a uniqely Kansas logo. I liked the finish line in downtown Olathe. I hope to return next year with family members and do a relay.

Overall a good marathon, but watch the hills!

This was my first marathon, and overall, I enjoyed it very much. However, I rated the course a 3 primarily because it was advertised as 'fast and flat.' It was fast, but certainly NOT flat. If you are thinking of running this race, be sure to do your hill training. Beyond that, the race was well organized and very enjoyable. The big-'ol medal given for completing the marathon was also a terrific keepsake.

Very well organized marathon

I enjoyed this marathon very much. The organization was outstanding. There were many traffic cones along the way, as well as volunteers at all (and police at most) turns along the course, so there was no possibility of taking a wrong turn. The day was warm, but I didn't think it was uncomfortably warm. Seemed just about right to me. Having packet pickup available race morning was very nice. Due to storms in the southeast, my connecting airline flight was delayed by 5 hours, so I barely made the 8:00pm pickup the day before the race. If morning pickup had not been a possibility, I would have been really panicking! The volunteers were all great and the police were wonderful at controlling traffic as well as being encouraging to the runners. The finishers' medals are great and the awards ceremony began on time after the finish. The trophies were awesome. Someone else mentioned the EconoLodge. I stayed there as well. I arranged by phone beforehand to get a late checkout and was told it would be $5.00 per half hour for late checkout, which seemed fair to me. However, when I arrived to check in, they did try to change that on me. I had to be very insistent to get the arrangemment that I had reserved ahead of time. I would highly recommend this marathon. The race director and his crew did a wonderful job.

A pleasant, late spring marathon.

Overall, this was a good running experience. The transportation to the starting line was well organized, the aid stations were at good locations and not too far apart and it was nice to have a choice of water or sports drink (or both), the volunteers were very supportive, as were the local police and sheriff's department personnel controlling traffic. The finish line experience was great, in a nice old town square setting. Even though the last couple of tenths of a mile were up hill, the crowd was there to cheer the runners on to the finish line, so it was hardly noticed. Overall, the course was relatively flat, some rolling hills, but nothing that should cause any issues. The finishers medals are very well done, congrats to the designer. My only recommendation for improvement would be to move the start time to 6:00 am, and/or to move the race to late April to avoid the Kansas heat.

Hot - poor hospitality at Econo Lodge

This was my first marathon (woo-hoo!), so I don't have a lot to compare it to. I know I started having heat-related problems around mile 21 or so, but there were plenty of aid stations to help. Some stretches of the course were very long with few spectators, which made time go by slowly, but some areas had beautiful green countryside complete with running horses. The Econo Lodge I stayed at had horrible service. I estimated I would be done around 11 am, which was check out time at the hotel. The man would not tell me how much extra it would cost to check out late until I gave him a time, which was strange. He wouldn't waive the charge (I just need to shower after), so I went to the front desk when I saw later that evening the first man had left. When talking to this man about just needing to shower quickly after the run he said, "You can go jump in a lake. There's one about eight miles from here. Or maybe try a truck stop. It probably costs eight dollars to shower there." I stared at him in disbelief at how rude he was being to me and then he said, "Well if you're so concerned about showering, why don't you just run faster?" I was furious. Besides this, there weren't enough towels in the room, no soap, no tissues, etc. So this was the worst part of my Olathe experience. I have filed a complaint with the BBB and Econo Lodge, but for future reference runners, do not stay here!!

I enjoyed this marathon.

Crowd support was nice -- mostly families cheering on their loved ones. Volunteer support was fantastic. I loved it especially because I qualified for Boston. The first half was cool and flat, the second half was warm and hilly. The finish line was at the top of a big hill -- be forewarned. Like others, I would favor starting earlier in the day or month to avoid the heat.

not my favorite marathon

The Olathe Marathon was too hot, too hilly, and practically spectator-free except at the beginning and end of the race. There was no shade along the course, which was more hilly than I was led to believe it would be. Almost the entire race was run along rural roads, but even when the last few miles went through residential Olathe, there were virtually no specators until the end. On the other hand, the volunteers along the course were friendly, enthusiastic and encouraging. The variety of sports-drink flavors along the course was interesting. Overall, I would not recommend this marathon to anyone, unless they were used to hills and heat.

Well-run, rural, and HOT!

The course is rural and very flat. It finishes in a “small-town America” setting (old part of Olathe). Overall, an enjoyable, at times picturesque, course. Organization seemed excellent, fan support sparse. Biggest problem was HOT temperature (avg. for the date). Race should start at 6:00 a.m. or 2-3 weeks earlier. Overall, a very enjoyable experience.

Third time is a charm

This was the third year and the third new course for this event. This point-to-point route was (for the most part) flat, but there are a couple inclines that will challenge you. Be prepared for no shade from the Kansas heat until you get to mile 23. Great water stops and volunteers are very supportive. All finishers this year were given a beautiful medallion that should cause embarrassment to what is given at another marathon with a larger participation in this area. The race finishes with a slight ascent, but there is a great descent before this to get your momentum. Great finish line venue located in downtown Olathe with lots of food and drink. You will not be upset if you give this event a try.

Getting Better, But a Ways to Go

I have run this marathon twice now, and while the course this year was improved, the heat was again a factor. The race either needs to start an hour or a month earlier. There was little shade on course, GU not placed where advertised, and there were some problems with transportation to the 15K, all of which add up to a marathon with growing pains. The cultural highlight of the city would seem to be its mall, and the course is run on either country roads or around heavily-traveled highways. I don't sense a lot of interest in the community itself by the number of spectators. Were it not for the relay teams, there would have been far fewer people on the course. The biggest problem is heat: either start the race at 6 - not 7 - or reschedule for April sometime.

Good race, getting better

This was the 2nd time I ran this race. There were some things that really improved. It was flatter than last year. The start had fireworks and a cannon. I have now run 4 marathons and not seen that before. I loved the shaded paved trails, away from the traffic and a cooler area. There was a nice out and back along a lake that was nice senic run. Lots of parking at the finish, we didn't have far to go to get to the car after the race. I plan to run this one again.

Disappointed

No bibs, ran out of shirts, late start, ran out of finisher's medals. Other than that, it was okay.

Thank You, Olathe

Besides the heat and the sparse crowd, this marathon was excellent. The course wound around the city through residential areas and through a very welcome shaded park. My most vivid memory was when I had finished and sitting on a chair and a woman that I did not know, came up to me and brought me a drink and an orange - exactly what was needed. One suggestion is to start the marathon either at 6 or 6:30 to avoid the heat somewhat or move the marathon to early May or late April. The hills were a bit more than expected, but not terrible.

Hot and long

Course was not as flat as published although the trail was flat. Hills were mainly normal residential type hills but certainly the hills were not just on the overpasses as they described in the brochure. They ran out of water at mile 6 and I got there at the 1:01 mark. There were a lot of people behind me too. It was the closest water stop to the 15k turn-around and that may have been the reason they miscalculated how much water to have out but with the water stops only at every other mile, it was too hot and too long to go from 4-8 miles without water. For a race at this time of year they should have water at every mile which would be easy because for the most part it's an out and back course. Although volunteers were great with lots of encouragement and music, there were hardly any spectators to cheer you on unless your family was there. Police officers were great. Sometimes as many as 3 in each intersection.

Pylons, Pylons and more Pylons

This course is very well marked, taking a wrong turn or getting lost should not be a concern to anyone who runs this event. Miles and miles of pylons to assure the safety of the runners, mile markers clearly posted at every mile, and plenty of volunteers to assure that runners are going in the appropriate direction, Olathe PD did an excellent job of providing traffic control. Spectator support was sparse but of those who were present were very vocal and supportive. Aid stations were well organized, and the aid station volunteers were vocally supportive to the runners, I was especially impressed with the volunteers at the finish line, they were very accommodating, and attentive to any potential needs, and several volunteers shook my hand and congratulated me as I passed through the line. I was quite taken back by all the attention at the finish line. Overall this was a well organized event, I would like to commend the race director and the volunteers who worked hard to provide an organized and safe event for the runners. PS...Prior to the start of the race the National Anthem of Japan was performed (in addition to the American National Anthem) in honor of a participant who had traveled from Japan to compete in the Olathe Marathon... A very classy gesture. Again, thanks to all who participated in this event.

Very well organized small marathon.

This was my sixth marathon and the most organized I've been in. The aid stations were manned by energetic volunteers serving ice-cold water and Gatorade (plus fruit and GU at several stops). Miles were clearly marked and the course was easily accessible for family and friends. The trail portion of the course is a nice change from most marathons. The traffic control was tremendous. If the run took place a month earlier, it would be a treat (it was 78 degrees when I finished).

Twisty course but a lot of fun....

The race was a little more hilly than the description that I had heard (flat & fast), however, the changing terrain made for a fun and interesting race. From 2 lane roads, to 4 lane roads, to bike trails. The spectator morale was great and helped to push me to finish. The only thing that bothered me was the fact that they lumped myself, a wheelchair racer, in with the handcyclists. The handcyclists have an advantage in that their chair has 27 gears, where as my chair only has 1 gear... me! I would suggest that the organizers split up these two different chairs because of this disadvantage/advantage and to make it more fair.

Great race, fun to do, but needs more water

I think the organization of this race was excellent as well as the course. It was flat and well protected by the city. My only gripe, and it's an important one, is that there wasn't enough water in the last leg of the race. From about 18 miles on I really needed fluid, but they spaced the stations too far apart. That's the easy one to fix. The other points are more important and I'd still recommend this race highly.

Well organized run on a flat course

For a first time marathon, you did an outstanding job. The course offered just enough elevation changes to keep it interesting without being difficult. The course support was strong. Finishing on the track was a nice touch, even though the stands weren't filled.

Great time

This was my first marathon. It was a great course, very flat. It was very well organized with plenty of water/Gatorade stops. Some of the stops also had fruit. The weather was perfect. Great volunteers and police support for intersections. Spectators were sparse, but I believe that will improve with the next runs. I am looking forward to running this in 2004 also.

First marathon - Loved it

I just wanted to say thanks to you and the City of Olathe for hosting the marathon. I loved it. I was looking for my first marathon to enter and the Olathe Marathon was a perfect fit. It was close to home so if the race did not go well for me physically, home and friends would not be far away. Races do not always go that well for 52 year-olds. An additional benefit turned out to be the fans than cheered me on during the race. They were great! The race was small enough my cheering section met me at five different locations. I loved the course and the volunteers did a fantastic job. The Police Department did an excellent job working the intersections. I was pleasantly surprised when my sister from Humboldt, Kansas called me later in the afternoon to congratulate me based on the results that were posted on www.olathemarathon.com. Nice job, extremely quick! Based on my experience in the Olathe Marathon, I intend to return next year and run in other marathons as well. Later in 2003 I ran in the Des Moines Marathon and was successful there, but I still like Olathe the best. See you in '04.

Fun race, well-organized

The only regret I have about the race is that I didn't finish faster. Next time I'd like to see you please shorten the last 6 or 7 miles, as I think that would dramatically improve my time. In all seriousness, though, I thought they put together a *great* race. I can't say enough about how well protected (from traffic) and how well marked the course was. The aid stations were great, and you could tell the volunteers had been uniformly trained so you could always count on 'water in front, Gatorade in back' at every aid station (about every 2 miles). I gave the course 5 stars. How could I not? It passes within a mile of my house at several points and my wife and little boys came out to cheer me on all over the place! I have run 4 marathons (all fairly small) & this one was probably the best organized.

No spectator support, not enough fluid

Although this was the first year of the race, I was quite disappointed about the course and the amount of fluid available for a warm day. I hope next year there will be some supporters out cheering on the runners. Lack of organization and small amount of runners also made this a long run.
