Goodbye Frederick Marathon

So I did the first and the last Frederick Marathons. It began in snow and slush (2003), and ended with brutal heat (2010). As my surname is Frederick, I know I'll never find another marathon with quite the same meaning for me. Thanks for the memories.

Extremely well supported marathon

The first half of the Frederick Marathon course was flat and fleet. The second had some nice hills. I was prepared for the hills but not for the heat in 2010. The organizers, however, were well prepared for a hot day. The aid stations were abundant and well stocked, most of them with ice. Medical personnel could be found at all points along the second half of the course. This was my slowest marathon ever, but one of the most fun I've had the opportunity to run. Nice shirt, nice medal, everything you could possibly need on the course, and great neighborhood support.

Great Support on a Hot Day

Very good marathon with an interesting and challenging course. Especially through the residential area around mile 20, the support of the community was terrific. The pullover and medal were both first rate. Organization was very good with lots of water, Gatorade and food on the course. The weather was very hot, but the organizers were prepared. I liked the finish at the fairgrounds, but make sure to arrive early as traffic before the race is a bear. My worst time ever, but I would like another crack at this course under better weather conditions. Well done!

Happy to finish on a hot day

I've done the Frederick Marathon twice - the first one in 2003, when the temp was 31 degrees and snow, sleet, and wind attacked the runners; and 2010, when sun and humidity made the 88-degree heat a challenge. Lots of hills after 15 miles - the hills just keep coming at you at a part of the course where you're stuck along the side of a major four-lane highway and there's nothing to think about but how miserable it is. Spectators in the residential neighborhoods were wonderful - really caring and supportive. Race organizers did a good job; there was water and an energy drink available even for the back-of-the-pack marathoners. Things to watch out for if you come to this marathon: the pronounced tilt of the right side road shoulders in the first half (stay toward the middle of the road), and the hills from mile 16 to 22. BE READY for them.

Highly Recommended Event

This is my 3rd time running this race (2007, 2009 and 2010), and all 3 have/will leave me with memories that will last a lifetime. From the day of the expo to the finish line of the race, the whole experience was fanastic. I set a PR at Frederick in 2007, and it is only befitting that I completed my 30th marathon at the 2010 Frederick Marathon. This year's event was a little hotter than normal, and even though I didn't finish with the time that I was shooting for, the race was still a success. The course in someways is similar to the Boston Marathon in that the hills are towards the end - mile 16 and on. I would highly recommend this course to every serious runner who is looking for a challenge, and has yet to run at Frederick. This is one race that will always be on my calendar. Although the crowd support is small, those who came out were very supportive - not to mention the police officers, who were cheering on the runners as well. Frederick, I will be back next year.

Great race to bring your family to

The organization of this race is top-notch. There was a 5K race that my 13-year-old nephew ran on Saturday at 6:00 after packet pick-up. You start and finish on a horse racing track! Frederick is a beautiful southern city; I wish I could have spent more time downtown. The race has a relatively early 6:30 start. The first 15 miles of the marathon course are relatively flat and scenic and shady. Then you leave town for the remainder of the race. There are two large hills about a half-mile each between miles 17 and 19. Since it was almost 90 degrees, I smartly walked up these. Unfortunately, once the cloud-cover burned off, there was relatively little shade and it was HOT, HOT. You run through some beautifully manicured newer homes and many of these provided hoses and sprinklers, which I took advantage of - but the heat was relentless. There was ample aid stations with ICE - I don't think I could have finished without the ice. As it was, I finished in 5:17 and had to be treated for heat exhaustion. If you run in this weather, PLEASE take it easy. My wife and daughter were very upset when I passed out 5 minutes after the finish. I thank God for the response of the EMTs who treated me and many others for heat exhaustion and hypothermia after the race. They were great! (I had run a 4:38 five weeks earlier in flat, cool conditions in NJ; 5:17 is what heat and hills can do to your time.) On the plus side, my young daughter ran in the kids' fun run and received a very nice medal. The marathon finishers' medal is excellent and big; it really stands out on my medal board! Thank you, Frederick!!

Make sure you know the course if you are up front

Kind of a bittersweet marathon for me. Had a very good race - placed 2nd overall. The earlier part of the course is moderately flat, and the real hills begin right around mile 16.5, I would say. Make sure you do some hilly medium-long distance runs. I did 20-23-mile long runs on a towpath that is relatively flat; however, I did some very hilly 16-milers as well. I believe the hilly 16-milers helped me a lot for this race. I was 4th until about mile 19, where all of the hills were, and I ended up catching the next 2 guys. Get to the start an hour before. The course is pretty good, in my opinion; I enjoyed the different areas, and the neighborhood crowds near mile 20 were great! The only complaint I really have is that at the end when you entered the stadium I was told by an official to keep going straight (they thought I was only halfway done so far), when I really should have turned right to the finish. I ended up losing about 2 minutes off my time, but thankfully not my place. Organization could have been better in that sense. Officials, please do a better job of directing the runners out in front. Lots of times I had to point to clarify where to go and get confirmations. I shouldn't have to do that. Your job is to direct; I am doing the running. The runners in front can't possibly memorize all of the turns. Overall, a great race. There is nothing more awesome than the other runners cheering for you in the same race! You all are what makes it so worthwhile!

Much improved organization. Nice marathon.

Kudos to the organizers for listening to past years' comments and making significant improvements. Easy parking. Efficient expo/packet pick-up. Well-run start and finish areas. Course has a great variety of terrain and atmosphere. The high percentage of half and relay runners makes it difficult to hold back on the reins for the first 13, but the hills in the second half will make you wish you did.

Parking is a bear; fans and course are great!

This was my first Frederick Marathon, but I have run many much larger events. I did not expect it to be so difficult to park and get to the start line. I needed more than an hour to go the three miles from the interstate to the start line. There are many routes into the fairgrounds, but they were all jammed with traffic that didn't seem to flow anywhere. Police were on every corner, but it just didn't move quickly. Even though I was in the port-o-john when the race started - and it rained steadily the majority of the race - it was well supported by the fans and volunteers at the water/food stops, so they made the run worthwhile. Big thanks to all of those who braved the cold rain from the sidelines. The hills and strange turns through downtown and the Wal-Mart parking lot actually made the race less boring. I suggest exploring Frederick on Saturday. The Flying Dog Brewery has a great tour and tasting. Great location and people. Runners need to plan plenty of time for pre-race parking and prep.

Nice pace, nice race

Please improve on the expo. Also, please improve on parking on race morning. Please allow fans with wheelchairs to be let out at the fairground area. The pace group was very good; I ran next to a few for awhile just to check out how they handle people. Marathoners need pacers that are nice and real motivators. I run marathons all over the U.S., for fun. It means a lot to me to see other marathoners being treated nicely. I thank you for having this race.

Challenging but rewarding race

This was my second full marathon and I found it to be challenging, but rewarding. I loved the start in historic Frederick. There were many spectators supporting us throughout the race. I usually run with music, but left my earbuds out the entire race to enjoy the spectators. I drove the course a few days before, which mentally prepared me for all the hills between miles 17-22. I loved having those hills run through a neighborhood with supportive spectators handing out oranges and cheering us on. I did achieve a PR on this run, which I am very happy about!!!! Thanks to all the supporters and volunteers!!

A good marathon to enter

This is my 2nd time running the Frederick Marathon, and I enjoyed it as much as the 1st one I ran, which was back in 2007. In fact, after running the Boston in 2007, I quickly registered for the Frederick Marathon and set a new PR. I was unable to do the 2008 Frederick run because of an agonizing hamstring pull that I suffered one week from the 2008 Boston. After the injury in 2008, I have run 4 marathons, including the 2009 Boston. All of the times were considerably slower, but than came the Frederick Marathon - my fastest time in awhile. The Frederick Marathon is one of my favorites because of the organization and the friendly people in Frederick. I enjoyed the course too; it's almost identical to running Boston, with challenging hills at the end of the race. One note though: the expo could have been a little bigger. I highly recommend this race to anyone and everyone who loves the sport of running, and marathons in particular. Frederick, I plan to come back next year. Thanks to all in the organization - keep up the good work.

Hilly, but I managed a PR

Well, after 3 years and 4 tries I finally broke my PR - and by more than 7 minutes! Yes, the hills after the half were tough (but nothing remotely comparable to the seesaw course of the Charlottesville Marathon). I think that because I train almost constantly on a hilly course, that was not a real factor. The rain? I think it was a blessing. It started raining (for me) at mile 10. By then I was soaking sweat because of the increasing humidity. I was able to breathe much better when the rain started. And I was VERY fortunate not to get blisters (because of the rain). I always get cramps on marathons, but on Sunday's race, zilch. I decided not to come to a complete stop (not even when drinking) and I think that really helped. I was lucky that it was my day. Marathons are like that. I have to express my thanks to the four or five 3:30 pacers whose steady drive carried me to the end - especially one named "Rich." But the top credit goes to my dear wife, who has prepared the best dishes of pasta in the most varied and original eclectic styles the past few months; and our precious daughter who learned the word "go" as she has seen me running over time. We are a team, and this medal is as much theirs as it is mine.

Good, but I probably won't repeat it

First half was fun and interesting. Even the run through Wal-Mart was neat. After mile 15, you run on a highway, next to cars and semis - not fun. I liked the hills, which provided a real challenge. I liked the start and finish at the fairgrounds. Need to reroute the second half to a better area. It was raining most of the time and that probably kept the fans inside. More food on the course would also help. All that was offered was Sun Chips. I wanted to stop at McDonald's as we ran by on the highway.

Lots of hills on the 2nd half

This was a pretty tough course by itself but this year we had the added feature of rain - and not a little rain for a short period of time, but constant rain about an hour after the start for the entire day. The course was not too bad, and going through the Wal-Mart parking lot was a hoot because they had shopping carts lined up to keep the runners' lane open for runners only. The placement of the water stops was perfect, about every 2 1/4 miles until about mile 20 and then every mile to the finish line. Again, the 2nd half has some nasty hills, so be ready for them or just walk them like I did. Nice medal and the folks that stood in the rain and cheered us on were great. I saw one lady and her two kids in pink shirts at least 4 times at different points in the course. She and the kids were yelling and cheering us on. Two young gals with rainbow-colored, knee-high socks were there at least twice on the course. The full and the half run together and the full goes right by the finish line, so that can be a heart-breaker, knowing that you've only finished half the course and sometime later you will be back at that same spot to finish. The main thing to watch for is not to burn yourself out on the front half because the back half will be harder.

The hills are doable!

This marathon is part of the 2009 Maryland Double Series (Frederick and Baltimore), which I am participating in. The course was very scenic. Runners received a good tour of downtown Frederick. The volunteers were encouraging and the course marshals and police did an excellent job of directing runners and traffic. The post-race food was abundant. Unfortunately, the constant rain kept the spectators away, but those that did come out were greatly appreciated, especially those in the neighborhood at miles 19-23. The only aspect of the course that I did not like was the stretch of highway from mile 16-19 - it was relatively boring. However, most marathons that I have run have a "boring" section.

Fun Race

This was my first marathon. I had run the half at Frederick last year so I was familiar with the first half of the course. Last year there was bad traffic getting to the race. I got to the race earlier this year, but it seemed that traffic was much better. I ran with the 4:15 pacers for about the first 16 miles, which helped me not go too fast. The beginning of the course is nice and scenic - around the city, including Bakers Park. The fans around the first part seemed to be fewer than last year, I assume because of the weather. There is an area around mile 8, where cars are using one side of the road and the runners' space is pretty tight. The famous back-of-Wal-Mart part of mile 9 probably had the best fan support and had a shopping theme that made it fun. After Wal-Mart, the next few miles were through a rural area and were uneventful other than the rain picking up. At mile 13, we were back at the fairgrounds where the half-marathoners finished. We then went back downtown and went to Carroll's Creek and turned around, going past the fairground at mile 15 and heading out to a more rural area. My brother met me at mile 16 and ran most of the rest of the way with me. He was a big help with encouragement. Miles 16 through 22 were the hilly part of the race. I think I did a pretty good job with the hills and they did not bother me too much. I maintained a consistent 9:45-to-10-minute-a-mile pace throughout the race. Miles 18 through 22 were through the Springridge community. Apparently there was not a lot of fan support in this area last year. I thought that, considering the weather, there was good fan support this year. After mile 22 we turned on Route 144 and headed back to the city. From mile 20 on there was a water stations at every mile, with PowerAde available as well. Throughout the race, the water stations were plentiful. The rain had picked up over the last few miles and there were plenty of puddles to dodge. My only disappointment with the race was the lack of fan support at the end of the race. Miles 25 and 26 were deserted until the last 50 of so yards that you run in the fairgrounds. It is not how I envisioned the end of my first marathon. My time was 4:17, which was right where I expected to finish; and other than being sore, I felt good. Overall, the marathon is on a good course, with a mixture of city and rural areas and a somewhat hilly second half. This is a very well organized marathon, something I have come to expect from Corrigan Sports.

Real hills; great spectators

This turned out to be a very hard marathon for me. I had just run a PR course in March and had high hopes for this one, but the hills in the second half did me in. For me, they were "real" hills and not as described in the race brochures. The first half was a very nice tour of old Frederick and the surrounding countryside - except for the tour of the Wal-Mart parking lot, which was weird. But, as I understand it, the course was supposed to go through parts of Hood College until the permit was rejected and the RD had to redirect. Tough to do on short notice. The second half was not a nice run 0 alongside the highway for most of the race, with cones separating us from high-speed traffic. And the hills! They did me in - bad leg cramps. And I agree with other writers about getting to the starting area - that needs to be addressed. We got there on time only because I used my GPS to find another route. All that said, it was a good race. I might run it again - and if I don't, it will only be because there are just so many to choose from.

Nothing to write home about

The course was pretty average; it's nothing spectacular, but I have seen worse. The best part was running round the back of Wal-Mart - classic. Not that many spectators out, but I would like to agree with JF from Stirling in that the kids handing out orange slices at 20 miles were very much appreciated. The weather was great and I set my then-best time, so I was happy enough with the event. The running top that we got was very nice as well, and I wore it for the Philly Marathon. Would I do it again? Only if I lived there.

Tough Course, Great Organization, Great Support

This was my 4th marathon, my first Frederick marathon and my first Spring marathon. The 6:30 a.m. start time was kind of a pain, especially when your alarm clock is going off at 4:45 a.m., but then, because of the early start, you are done at a reasonable hour in the morning, it won't take up your whole day. The early start is also good for marathons at that time of the year as the weather can go either way; thankfully in '08 it didn't get too warm. The hills in the second half of the race would have been so much worse in hotter weather. The course is a nice mix between urban and rural. When you're only a mile or two outside of Frederick you can be surrounded by farmland. Along with this comes the smell of cow manure in a few places along the course, although I would take that over diesel fumes from trucks as you run along Route 144 any day. One thing I liked about the course throughout was the 6-foot tall mile markers, which are very easy to see from a distance. A few others have mentioned the weirdness of the section around the Wal-Mart between miles 9-10. I think it was even weirder for the employee out back on her smoke break than for the runners. The water stops were plentiful throughout. The two kids handing out orange slices somewhere in the neighborhoods between mile 19-22 were much appreciated, thank you. I couldn't find any fault with the organization, expo, jacket, parking, timing, race size, finish line food were all hassle-free and easy to deal with. I would recommend the race to anyone. My own race went well. I set a PR by just over a minute, and the best thing about the race for me was the leg muscle pain in the couple of days after the race was the least it has been in my previous 3 marathons. Not sure why, but I'm glad.

Ran it well!

Thoroughly enjoyed this race this year, with improvements noted over previous years. The addition of that 26.2 company to the expo was great. Nice quality UA tech tees available before the race and after having actually finished!

Poorly Planned Course Route

A very difficult marathon; I recommend steering clear of this one. Organizers claim that the hills are "not that bad" in the second half, but do not expect to get a PR on this course. The hills are extensive and will likely bring your run to a grinding halt. The second half is very uninteresting, as you run along highways, while cars buzz by on other side of red traffic cones. You can find nicer, kinder, more interesting marathon courses in the area.

A Great Race

I really enjoyed both the race and the race experience. I recommend this marathon to others. Online registration was easy, packet pickup was effortless, the race course was scenic, the volunteers were great and the police provided excellent traffic control. Although the course does have tough hills from miles 16-22, I still managed to PR by 10 minutes. One nice thing is that the race organizer sponsors group runs along the course in the weeks leading up to the race. Since I'm not from this area (I was in town on an extended business trip), it helped a lot to have participated in a 20-mile group run. Marathon entrants were provided a running jacket. Very nice! The finisher's medal is also attractive and will be proudly displayed in my collection.

Excellent support, challenging course

This was my 6th marathon and 1st Frederick Marathon - even though I live in Frederick. The course was really nice, except the 3-mile (or so) stretch that went around Wal-Mart and down Moncacy Road. I thought the fairground was a great place for the start/finish. The hills toward the end were a challenge, but as the second place-finisher asked me earlier, "Who runs a marathon because it's easy?" Wonderful community support for a small-town marathon.

Nice improvements from 2007

I ran this marathon last year and this year was much better! I thought the course this year was much improved, although a lot more challenging. The hills from miles 15 - 23 were tough! I did miss the run through the graveyard but the run through the canal just before mile 14 that was added this year was great too. I think the fan support was much better this year. The one change I'd like to see is runners' first names on the bib numbers. I saw this at Disney and felt it was great to hear fans cheer for you with your name - as opposed to, "Great job, 201."

Well organized, smaller race

Frederick was my first marathon and I enjoyed the experience. The organizers, spectators, and local runners all worked hard to provide visitors with a positive race experience. Parking was easy but I arrived early. I did hear of some people hitting early morning traffic and rushing to the start. The water stops were well stocked and staffed with eager volunteers. The course was generally scenic and the (limited number of) spectators were energetic. The course as designed for 2008 had some challenging hills around mile 20. I saw several 3:30 and 3:40 pace group members walking up the biggest of the hills, which showed me how tough that section of the course was. There were about twice as many half-marathoners as full, so the field thinned considerably for the second half of the race. The finish had lots of energy and live music. There were plenty of bagels, granola bars, bananas, and fluids at the finish as well. Overall, Frederick is a well organized, small (but growing) marathon that makes for a fun weekend. If you are going to run Frederick next year, don't miss the twilight 5K the night before, which includes music and a general party atmosphere.

Difficult course, great support

This was my 4th marathon and 1st Frederick Marathon. The organization was great and the volunteers and community support were fantastic. The course was difficult - the hills from 16 - 22 were tough, but that makes the finish even more enjoyable. I ran with the Geiko pacers and they were great too. They made the last few miles in the 10-20 miles-per-hour wind gusts seem less horrible then they were. The only issues with the course were the run though the Walmart parking lot/loading dock and the "out and back" by the airport in the open area - the winds were terrible. Overall, a great race. I will absolutely run this marathon again!

Just an overall enjoyable experience

I ran this marathon last year and enjoyed it so much that I returned. The modifications to the marathon as a whole were terrific from the expo to the finish line festival (which for a small marathon was great!). The new course was challenging in the last 13. I think that it should be reversed to share that fun with the half marathoners. But how about a few more porta-potties at the start?

If you like hills...

This was my first time running this race. The first half of the course was very nice running through downtown Frederick and around Hood College. In fact, a better course would have been two loops of the first 13.1. The second half of the course was very hilly and along stretches of highway in direct sunlight and through subdivisions. The hills did not stop from miles 16 - 23. The overall organization was quite good with well-stocked stations with gatorade, water and gu. The marathon website lists ways that you can contribute to a 'green' race, however, they used plastic cups for water. In addition to this being an avoidable environmental waste, they cups don't crimp well and crack when trying to drink while running. Please use paper cups next year! Also, the Frederick County Fairgrounds were a great place to start and finish the race, but please add more portajohns for next year. Many of the bathrooms had non-functioning or overflowing toilets - just gross. I did not do a well as I had hoped but still enjoyed completing another marathon!

New course with some rough edges

Overall a good event with the following comments. Don't see the need for power bars at mile 6. The table really got in the way and created a choke point here, which was also a relay exchange point. Don't agree with the 'gently rolling course' description. Those were real hills, nothing gentle about them. I don't mind hills, not complaining, but it seemed like every course description and elevation profile was accompanied with a statement saying its not as hilly as it looks. In my book, it was a good hilly course, 2nd half anyway. Bathrooms at the fairgrounds are not as reliable as a portajohn, which do not back up. Note to self, given a choice, stand in line for a portajohn over a real bathroom before an event. The website says there are finisher shirts. There were none. At least thats what they told me at the information desk.

Logistical Problems again to get to the start

For two years in a row there have been significant difficulties getting to the start for many runners. In 2007 the shuttle bus never came to pick up me and about 60 other runners at the Holiday Inn missing the start by 20 minutes. This year, using the directions to the fairgrounds traffic was again backed up on I-70 resulting in many runners, including myself missing the start again by 20 minutes. This was my 77th marathon and I've run marathons with has many as 39,000 participants without these issues. Corrigan sports has to fix this if they want repeat marathoners. Big plus of the race are the spectators, police/traffic control and volunteers. They are #1 and I would say even worth the headaches of getting to the start.

Overall a good half marathon; great fans

This was my first half marathon and the fans really helped pull me through. For the size of the race, the fan support was phenomenal! Overall I had a great time and everything that I needed was there. I would definitely recommend the half marathon for anybody else. There were some minor concerns though: (1) Parking near the start was very limited and (2) there was a pretty long wait to catch the shuttle from the half marathon finish line to the main expo area (and I couldn't see the first marathon finishers as a result). And (3) there were only a few porta-johns early in the race and the water stations for the first 6 miles or so were a little understaffed for the number of runners. So you either had to wait in line or do without.

Small-Town Feel

First half of the course was very nice! Second half of the course was absolutely terrible. End of the race was okay, but there was no food to speak of (unless you count doughnuts and water). Don't bother with the expo - complete waste of time.

Okay Race

Overall, I thought this race was just okay. Nothing great but I'm glad I did it. I hated the second half of the marathon course. It went through fields and developments and there were very few specators. I would suggest making the race two loops if possible. The police/EMT/volunteer support was GREAT!! I also liked that there were water stops every mile for the last six miles. We couldn't find any food at the end, just Munchkins and Soy Joy bars. Maybe we missed them but it should have been better marked. I love the medal that was given out; it's definitely one of the better ones. We missed one of our friends because of the bus situation which really stinks. We all would have rather run together. All in all, it was an average race.

A marathon worth running

I ran the half in 2006 and really enjoyed the race, so I came back this year to run the full and had a great time (and BQed). Temps again were great and the wind was tough from the far turn to the finish. I can't imagine tougher conditions coming in from mile 21.5. We took an early 5:45 am bus from the Holiday Inn Express and got to the start at 6am. I can't imagine the distress of the folks who couldn't get to the start but it must have been hard to take. All I can say is, get to the start early! I was disappointed with the expo (even worse than last year), but the shirts and hat were terrific value. I loved the donuts last year and the munchkins this year were a big disappointment. I was better to be able to spread out outside, though, and overall I thought it was about the same at the end as last year. One thing that just cannot be beaten, though, are the volunteers and police. They are simply OUTSTANDING. You'll not find better, more caring and enthusiastic people anywhere. Especially impressive are the water/gatorade/food stops every mile for the last seven. That's exactly right and something too many forget. Run Frederickexcept for the hill at mile 25, the course is rolling and interesting. BTW, the comment about the 'huge' hills in the first five miles - what race were you running? The first five miles are probably the flattest on the whole course! Finally, the finishing times are posted within minutes. I can't remember another race where it's done this quickly. You finish, get a great medal, get some food and drink, and your time is up. Amazing. Great work by the timing company.

Nice very low key/small marathon

Last year I ran the half (due to running a marathon the week before). This year the marathon was the first marathon I ran after a 100 miler. My only goal was to finish under 6 hours. The pre-race pickup was an easy experience. It was a small expo, but there were a few vendors (which made my husband happy because my $$ spent was under $50). Sunday morning, my husband dropped me and a friend/runner off. This meant we did not deal with the bus fiasco. There definitely could be more porta potties at the start; however, I don't worry about lines with chip time. The course is beautiful, especially during the first 15 miles or so. The spectators were very nice and friendly. They definitely thinned out as my race went on, but those sticking it out for the back of the packers were VERY ENTHUSIASTIC! Also, all the sheriff/police officers, EMTs and volunteers were all nice and supportive. One section that I had a little difficulty was mile 19 or so where there was alot of construction. Unfortunately with the exposed dirt and 20+ mph wind led to a massive dust storm which got into my eyes, nose, mouth etc. This somewhat was caused by weather but also the course. I liked the fact that at mile 17 and mile 25 there was a Brusters Ice Cream, I went off course and got myself a treat. They have HUGE waffle cones and very good ice cream/yogurt. Next year I hope Brusters considers sponsoring an aid station there. The aid stations were pretty good. As they promised there was water and gatorade frequently. The banana's and pretzels were a nice treat (I think more pretzels less potatoe chips would be good). Since I eat Snickers Marathon bars, I did not pay attention to the availability of gels or bars for those in the back. Overall, I had a good time. I will do it again. I found everyone to be nice, friendly and helpful. There were enough runners in the back of the pack so I could always run with someone.

Great course, tough last mile

This was my first marathon and I had a great time. The course was wonderful and took you through most parts of Frederick. The tree-lined streets and running by the fields were my favorite parts. Plenty of water, gatorade (mixed just right), and gels at the right spots. The last mile had a couple hills that were unexpected and annoying. But other than that, it was a great experience and makes me want to run more races in the future. Thank you!

overall a great day

I can't comment on the expo as my packet was picked up by the team captain; I ran in the team relay. If I could have changed anything, I would have arrived before 6am to park at the stadium start/finish. I arrived at the mall around 630am. The line for the bus wasn't too bad, about 4 busloads of people but only 1 bus came every 10 minutes. Finally around 7am, 3 buses came and picked up a fair amount of us. I will say that I saw alot of non-runner's on these buses. We arrived around 715am, just enough time for me to run into the stadium to use the restroom because I was running leg 1 of the relay. Made it to the start a few min after the gun so I had lots of people to pass! The first 6.4 miles were great, it went right through the historic area. Crowd support was fine but I was amazed at the police/fire services. There were police on every corner doing an amazing job and EMT's riding up/down on the course. In all my races, even big city, I've never seen such a great job. Well done guys. The water stops were fine but since I ran only 6 miles, I kept on running past . When I finished my leg, I chose to walk back to the stadium... 2 miles direct. It seemed like I would have waited awhile for the buses to leave back for the stadium, I think I actually beat them. The water stations were just being dismantled and roads opening up on my way back. I don't recall seeing any runner's left. Someone made a comment about starting 15 min late and not seeing these? The finish area was fine, there were vendor booths giving away free stuff. I think I walked away with 4 t-shirts including the finishers. There were plenty of food such as Utz chips, bananas, apples, rita's ice, Thomas english muffins/bagels, Dunkin Donuts, Soy Joy bars, etc... and plenty was left hours after I finally went home. I will agree that there should have been some food at the 1/2 marathon finish and my teammate that ran leg 2 walked back to stadium because the buses weren't moving. Overall it was a great day to be out with friends. I would go back again but only to run the whole thing! Pros: Course Police/EMS Shirt/Medal Weather (bit windy) Cons: Not all miles were marked Buses Food @ 1/2 finish (thou plentiful @ stadium)

Better when it was smaller

I did the Frederick 1/2 in 2006 and had a great experience - fast course (great weather!!), lots of food at the finish, and it was easy to get in and out of because it was just the right size. This year (2007) I also did the 1/2 and found the course to still be pretty and fast, the weather great, and tons of police around limiting traffic. However, I'm not a fan of the bigger races where you spend a few extra hours getting in and out of the event due to shuttles and traffic, and that's what this race has become. It's a shame - we were so impressed last year that we vowed to do it every year, but we probably won't be back next year. Too much hassle even when we live nearby! I suspect Corrigan Sports took the race over because it was growing so fast, and it's already a victim of its own success if you ask me. We were extremely dissappointed with the food this year too - last year we got unlimited full donuts, this year we barely got a few Munchkins! Last, I thought the 'Expo' was a joke. It was supposed to go until 8:30 but when we got there at 7pm NO ONE was at their booths - which were very few - except one radio station promo guy. They should just call it packet pick-up and not embarrass themselves with the 'Expo' label, because it clearly was not.

Rolling, interesting course

One thing made this a great marathon for me - *TONS* of great volunteers out there helping with the event giving out water, Gatorade and bananas. The police were also great. The hills were all gentle, but there were plenty, IMO. Miles 19 to 23 were the roughest due to a stiff wind. If I could change anything - there would be more buses and more portable baths.

Overall a good marathon!

I have only one complaint and that was not enough buses to get runners to the start from the mall parking lot. We could park at the stadium if we arrived before 6am, but given that I was coming from an hour away I opted for the shuttle. I arrived at the parking lot for the shuttle at 6:30 and waited for 45 minutes. By, the time I got to the start line it was 1 minute before gun time. I never was able to locate the pace group I was planning to run with. This made for a very 'frazzled' start! However, everything else was great. The course was rolling. The volunteers were awesome and the aid stations were well stocked with water, gatorade, and some even had gu, bananas, and chips. Someone else had mentioned the cups were plastic. I didn't see any plastic cups the entire 26.2 miles. All the stations had paper cups when I ran through. I loved the technical shirt and the hat. We also received a finisher's t-shirt after the race. Overall, this was a very well run event except for the shuttle situation. I would highly recommend this marathon!

Nice, Small Marathon

I am a big fan of small marathons and overall I thought Frederick was pretty good. The police and traffic control were unbelievable for a race of this size. The course is a bit boring, with runs through 2 office parks - not sure if they could tweak it and make it better. The course was a bit more hilly than I expected - I think the course elevation map needs a better scale. The last hills on mile 26 are pretty rough. Water stations were plentiful and well stocked. I was dropped off a couple blocks away and walked to the start so I didn't experience the shuttle issues described below. Nice goodies - technical shirt and hat, and finisher t-shirt. Enjoyed visiting historic Frederick on Saturday. Spectators were sparse but generally enthusiastic. Overall, good experience. I would run Frederick again.

Cool Finisher's Medal!

I signed up late and was impressed with the organization and ease at which they accepted me. This is truly a small town race put on with care and consideration Abundant, well-stocked water stops, friendly volunteers, and sweet little touches to make us feel welcomed. The finisher's medal is very cool, and I appreciate that it does not have your sponsor's name emblazoned upon it. The course has only a few hills, the hardest of which comes at mile 25! But overall, it's a well-designed course that makes an 8-shape. Headwinds were strong for our race, but it was marvelously cool and sunny. I particularly liked the course in the last 6 miles running past open fields and keeping company with the cows. Suggestions for next year: please offer more lodging options on your website and improve (add more street names to) the race course map. Thanks again!

average

This was a highly disorganized run with me having to wait to get on a shuttle bus, that shuttled not only runners but their spectators. To top it off, we were all late getting to the start. The race did not foresee the roads to be closed?? So, when our bus arrived at the race, we had to get out and cross through all the runners, to get to the starting line. Afterwards we had to wait to get onto a shuttle bus to get to the food, and then to get back onto another shuttle to get to parking. The spectators were lacking. Would have been much better had it not been so disorganized.

Horrible organization for my first half-marathon

This was my first ever half-marathon and, while the course was decent, the elevation profile was off. While the profile made it look completely flat, there were more steep hills in the first 5 miles than in most of the rest of the run. I believe the race organization was terrible. We understood that anyone slower than a 14-min pace would end up running on the sidewalk and we were fine with that. What we didn't realize was that all of the racing personnel were going to desert their posts (including those at water stations) and we would be left to determine our own way to the finish line through the myriad of turns. We ran just over a 15-minute pace in the end, after stopping and asking various people on the street if they knew which direction the other runners went. Would it kill them to leave signs with arrows on them out for an extra half hour or so? Apparently, it would. . . AND we were given the wrong medals when we finished and had to go back to exchange them. Not very organized at ALL!

Good First Marathon Experience

Good First Marathon Experience Frederick is a great small town marathon. The runners expo was well-designed, with quick number pick-up, but there were not very many vendors. Following directions, we arrived at the local mall at 6:15 AM to be bused to the stadium and the starting line. The race started at exactly 7:30 AM. As the runners made their way to mile one I did see a number of buses trying to get to the start line. I later found out that the buses had problems making it to the start area because so many people did not pay attention to directions and tried to park at the stadium. The course was well patrolled by local police officers and well marked. Running the first half of the race with the half-marathoners I found all water stations to be well stocked and staffed by fantastic volunteers. The course changed as the half-marathoners veered off to finish. (My wife who ran the half commented that the race was geared to the marathoners as there was no food and very poor shuttle service from the park where she finished.) Mile seventeen was through a cemetery. Interesting course. Once we headed to mile eighteen the course became very baron of cheering fans. There was a bit of traffic running along side the runners, but controlled by cones and the police. No real issue there. There was water stations placed every mile for the last six miles of the race. Plenty of water, Gatorade, energy gel, and bananas. The final two tenth of a mile were ran in the local minor league baseball stadium. It was exciting running around the warning track and making the turn towards home and the finish line. The stadium announcer was calling out names of the runners as the came down the home stretch. Overall, a very good experience.

Well Supported Marathon

For a smaller marathon (721 finishers) I have never seen as much on course support in terms of traffic control - personal thanks to the officer near TJ middle school for going after the impatient butthead that nearly ran people over, plus emt's on bikes all over the place, well supported water stops with 1 per mile for the last 7. Excellent race premiums - sport shirt & hat. Nice to have a personalized bib as I had my name called out more than a couple of times. Not a huge crowd, BUT enthusiastic none the less. Decent post race, although would like a sports drink at the end (saw only water). Nice to get a couple of free beers and a finishers shirt. As for the course, it can best be described as rolling. I'd give it 4 stars as 2 sections through business complexes was a bit boring. I'd do it again. One of the best marathons I've run.

great experience for a first timer!

This was my first marathon and I thought it was great. The weather turned out to be perfect except for the wind especially the last 5-6 miles. The hills were not as bad as expected. I thought the organization was good, the miles marked and the volunteers were excellent. The water stations were prepped with gatorade, water, gu(selected stations), and snacks. Shuttle service was great but the expo was not so great (only expo I have ever been so not much to compare) Overall, great marathon, I would defintely recommend it to a first timer!

Poorly Organized, Nice Course

I arrived at the mall for the shuttle service at 6:45 and it seemed that they did not have enough buses, so we waited, and waited, and waited, and ....By the time the bus took us to the start line, the race had begun and the bus could not even get us to the start line. So we got out of the bus and ran to the start line. By the time I checked my bag and started, it was a ghost town. The course marshals were gone already at the first few miles, so I even got lost! They did not have any food at the finish line and it took for ever for the buses to come and take us back to the stadium where we could take another bus back to our cars. I suggest hiring another race management company to organize the race, have more buses, and food!

Frederick Marathon has a bright future

I true believe that some of the best marathons are right here in Washington DC, Baltimore, and now the Frederick area. From picking up your bid number to coming across the finish line, I walked away with a very satisfying experience. The crowd support, though scarce in numbers in some areas, was great. The police officers were just as great, In fact, the whole experience was a good one. Just having run the Boston about 3 weeks ago, I had another successful run - I set a PR at Frederick by shattering my last PR by 8 min. 9 sec., and I came in 2nd in my age category. The only downside is that I think I earned an award, but did not learn about it until I got home - I had to leave right after the race for another commitment - I read on the web page that awards are not mailed out. But all and all I had a great time and experience and plan to return next year.

Nice small town feel, challenging course..

I ran the 1/2 marathon and shaved 15 mins off of my Wirefly 1/2 time. Pros: 1. Smaller field, easy to get to the start and get dropped off 2. Friendly, enthusiastic spectators, saw many of the same folks over and over again, so they got around the course easily to see their runners 3. Nice temps (obviously not something that is controlled by the director, still..) 4. Plenty of well stocked aid stations had water & Gatorade, and at some they had granola bars, and UTZ potato chips. Saw a few runners actually stopping and opening up a bag of chips 5. Nice technical shirts, cool medal and a finisher's shirt Cons: 1. Used plastic cups, made it harder to make a spout and not very environmentally friendly 2. The port-a-potty line and line for restrooms at the stadium start, were long...put more pots on the course too! 3. The half and the full had different finish lines, which I liked, BUT then, you had to go back to the finish line for the full marathon to get your shirt and any food. Why not set up the half finish line with the half marathon finisher shirts and some snack? 4. They ran out of foil blankets at the half finish...and I finished well before the last runner. with the wicked strong winds, it didn't take long to get a chill. good thing we were parked near by 5. They need to put a better course map online or at least in the packets. The ones we got were printed in 6 pt font, I swear and the elevation map was not accurate - the spots which indicated big climbs didn't seem too bad, and other spots where I wasn't expecting anything, there were steep inclines. Overall, a nice challenging rolling course that was made a little harder by the VERY stiff headwinds. I would do the half again, not sure if I would do the full - a lot of it is just running around subdivision neighborhoods.

A great race marred by only a single glitch

I think the race organizers were unprepared for the number of people who showed up for the 2007 run. A decision was made to start the race on time, which caused the last three bus loads of runners and spectators (yes, even though it was published that the buses were only for runners, a lot of spectators were allowed on - maybe this was part of the problem?) to be stuck watching the field run past them while they were stuck on the buses! But it was a chip run, so despite being at the starting line 15 minutes after the beginning of the race, off we went. The crowds had dispersed by then, so fan support was minimal. The benefit was that there was no jockeying for running room! It was quite windy (a walk across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge on the same day was canceled due to high winds), and I felt sandblasted by the time I finished. Nonetheless, the plentiful water stations were in evidence, and at some, bananas and other goodies were available (I know one of the sponsors was Utz, but really, potato chips? I can't imagine eating dry, salty chips when I'm already in need of hydration!). The course was scenic and well-staffed. As noted, it's a hilly course! The police were great at traffic control, and the volunteers were helpful and prominent. The expo was a bit lacking, and the post-race refreshments seemed a bit absent. But by then, it was time to pack up our aching legs and hit the road for home. All in all, a terrific race. The weather was gorgeous, except for the wind (and who can control the weather, right?) and the glitch with the commuter buses (which we were required to ride after 6:00 a.m. that morning), I give this race four stars. The shirts, medals and hats were all first-rate. If you want an early May marathon, this is shaping up to be the one to run!

Needs Improvement

My understanding is that this year, Frederick chose a new race management company. I ran the half and it was easily the worst managed race of any distance that I've run. The shuttle service brought us to the start line late, about 300 runners started at about 10-15 minutes after the official start. We arrived at a local mall as we were told at 6:30 a.m. At the half marathon finish, they ran out of space blankets and food. Then to add insult to injury, they made us wait 45 minutes for shuttles back to the stadium while runners shivered in the cold.

How to run a Marathon

This is how marathons should be run. 1. Race started on time 2. A great course that was well marked (a little trepidation on my part after seeing the seemingly complex route map) and extremely well staffed (race volunteers had shirts that said: "OBEY ME" emblazoned on the front; there was no mistaking where you needed to go). 3. Friendly people, polite police officers, and nary a honking horn (in anger) in site; 4. And last but not least, there was a fluid station every mile for the last 5 or 6 miles. If you have read my recaps before, then you know that to me, this is the mark of a great marathon. Kudos to the Frederick Marathon.

Great half marathon

I ran only the half. I used this half as a tuneup for a full marathon later in May. I thought everything about the organizational team was terrific. Frequent emails to let you know about changes, etc., and little jokes here and there to keep it light-hearted. Great room at the Sleep Inn for not much money, parking at the course was simple, although getting out of the stadium parking lot at 10am was hard as runners were using the same road! Turns were well marked. The course elevation map needs some work. For a small marathon, the pacers were a nice surprise. Thanks much. Mine was great (thanks, Dane!). As for running out of or not finding gu, it's just not smart to run a marathon and not take your own! Get shorts with pockets and put the gu in! Only gripe: the 'technical' shirt doesn't work well for me. I ran a few miles in it the next week, and the sweat just piled up on my skin. The hat and the finisher shirt are great.

Fun run, lacked community support

This was a fun race that seemed to be well organized. The elevation profile of the course was pretty easy until about mile 20 and then the last few miles of rolling hills just killed me. Perhaps you can reroute the course to start in the rolling hills and finish in the areas of town that are less hilly. There were plenty of water stations and some occasional food throughout the race which was great, however for next year, PLEASE NO PLASTIC cups. I have to concur with an earlier comment that fan support was pretty awful during the LAST 5 miles of the course. Although the community-based fan support wasn't what I had expected, the Frederick Police and local Sheriff's department were terrific at handling traffic and routing the runners. The marathon course passed 2 high schools and I was surprised that I didn't see a single band or cheerleading squad. Perhaps the communities could be more involved next year by having them compete with one another (2 trees donated from a local nursery are awarded to most vivacious community).

1/2 marathon was an almost perfect event!

Great organization, lots of freebies, plenty of food and drinks, a well-marked course and beautiful weather. Can't get much better than that. Hills, IMHO, were insignificant. Kudos to organizers and spectators. Can't wait to run the full marathon next year. One thing that I had a problem with was trying to leave the stadium parking lot. Took almost a 1/2 hour to get out. Perhaps there should be lot recommendations for those running the half and full so that expectations are set.

First-Time Marathoner - Had a Blast!

My first race of any kind was the 2006 Frederick Marathon. The experience could not have been better. Outstanding website. Outstanding, interesting, and even funny communication via email prior to the event. Packet pick-up was easy. Parking was a breeze. The course was challenging but very fair. Course volunteers including the local police were great. Fans kept the spirits up. Weather was perfect. Pacer was incredible (thanks Bruce!). I couldn't have asked for a better experience. Words of advice for 2007 first-timers: do your training and include some moderate hills late in your training runs.

Outstanding event

This is my 10th marathon (ranging from big-city to rural trails), and this by far was the best. All mile markers were clearly visible; there were plentiful fluid stations; it was a memorable finish in the stadium; they gave out two t-shirts, a running hat and a colorful finisher's medal; they were lightning-quick about preparing results reports; and there were humorous, informative emails sent out, all of which set this event apart from the rest. Outstanding!

Great for a first-time marathon

Overall, this was a great marathon for my first one. The hills were minor, but the two in mile 25 were tough. It's all road running, but traffic was well controlled by the police and race volunteers. I found everyone to be enthusiastic and supportive. I only had a few minor complaints. The race volunteers at the stadium were surprised to see the shuttle buses full of runners and had no idea where to direct the bus. Also, one portion of the website had stated energy gels were at miles 12 and 20, and another said they would be available at 6.5, 13, and 20. I depended on that third gel, and there were none to be found at mile 20. Fortunately, Gatorade provided some energy, but those gels are essential to avoiding "bonking" in those last miles. Also, a friend of mine running a 5-hour marathon encountered several water stops without water. The only other minor issue (and not in any way the fault of the race organizers) was that the Holiday Inn placed us in a "smoking room." Think about that one. I made the reservation three months before the race, but they simply overbooked and placed a number of runners in smoking rooms. Housekeeping provided some industrial strength odor eliminator, but it's still not acceptable. I hope the hotel got enough negative feedback to not make that mistake again. I'd do it all again, though. I would recommend this weekend to anyone.

Very well done. I'll be back!

This was my first marathon at age 54. Overall a great experience. Course is fun, especially the first 2/3. Last part is a little boring and could do without the last 2 hills after mile 25. Volunteers and directions were great. Again, fans were good the first 2/3, but then not much. Other than the last 2 hills, the hills aren't much to worry about (and I didn't train at all for hills). A couple of minor glitches. Need to have officials at the check in to answer questions and at the race in the morning. I had signed up for an 8 p.m. pasta dinner and showed up to find out it was cancelled. At the end of the race, the people who provide the timing chips stop you and want to sit you down immediately to get the chip. Bad idea. Heart attack waiting to happen. No water for those in the last 1/3 of the pack at the first water stop and not much at the second. Rest of the course the water and Gatorade were great. Otherwise, it was very festive, and well organized; great fun, a good size and reasonably spectator-friendly. Last thing: they send you several emails in the weeks leading up to the race that are fun and really help to get you excited. Thanks to all involved.

Fantastic race

This is my second year running the Frederick Marathon. What I really enjoyed were the emails we received leading up to the race. Whoever wrote these updates made them fun to read. A little bit of humor is always a good thing. The course is challenging. I don't think I could run this hilly a course this early in the season.

Well-put-together event

I only ran the 1/2 so I guess I can provide half the comments. 1. I can never grade or mark down a race on spectators. It is not the job of the RD to get people up at 7:30 or to ask the residents to line the streets to cheer. 2. As confusing as the map was to look at prior to the race, there was no doubt about where one had to run while on the course. Not once did I approach a turn and have to ask where to go (there not many people in front of me to follow). The volunteers were on top of everything. There were plenty of volunteers and police directing and holding traffic. While this may seem like a simple thing to do, some races I have run have a hard time doing this. The "Obey Me" shirts were a nice touch. 3. Only markdown: buses for the 1/2. Volunteers at the end of the race should know where the buses are to get back to the start. Also, the bus driver should not be carrying on a loud personal semi-profane conversation (cell phone) and threatening to "go home" if something didn't go his way. 4. Award ceremony - not sure what time it started for the 1/2 marathoners but according to the webpage it started at 12:30. That is a long time for the award winners to sit around and wait, especially if people need to get home. 4a. Pre-race - if you picked up your bib up the morning of, you didn't get a goodie bag (with the normal pre-race stuff) and the tech shirts were almost gone (which at first I thought were the race shirts so the shirts at the finish made up for that concern). Your goodie bag should be there for you whether you get it at the expo or the morning of the race. 5. Overall - I'd give this an 8.5. It was a well-put-together race and it is still fairly new race. It can only get better and the "running shorts" e-mails were awesome (informative and funny).

Could have been a contender

I did the 1/2 marathon. Great weather, course not too difficult. I guess my biggest beef was the tech shirt. I got a choice of either medium or small. Usually if a runner pre-registers for a race, they should have some degree of assurance of getting the size shirt they indicate. Normally if this would have been a regular t-shirt, it wouldn't have mattered much. So now I have a great tech shirt that I can't get over my shoulders. The other small issue was the bike rider who came by twice at about six miles and again at about nine and a half and encouraged the runners by telling them that they were on the last hill of the course and that the rest of way was flat and/or downhill. I'm thinking that there were many "first time on this course" runners that didn't find this amusing, after encountering several hills after his comments.

Overall Good

The course and premiums were very good. One comment on the half marathon post-race party. There were no bananas left when I finished and no donuts/bagels. There were probably more runners at the half than the full, but the refreshments were less. I guess if you wanted better refreshements, you needed to take the shuttle to the stadium. However, I was concerned about being able to get back to the hotel since there was a lot of uncertainty about shuttle buses. A suggestion for next year is to have both races finish at the same place with one post-race party.

Good small-town race

This was a great race for a small town, but I felt the crowd support was good, given race size. Police and volunteers were plenty and did a good job managing traffic and the course. Miles 20-25 (I think?) were a bit lonely, but it helped that relay runners were alongside. All in all, a great race for the size.

absolutely great and getting better every year

Kudos to race director Rachel Ridgeway. She and her staff of volunteers put on another first-class running event. From packet pick-up, to volunteers on the course, to the finish line, one could not ask for more. I'd even like to compliment the director on the weather if she had anything to do with that too. The technical shirt was excellent and it was really great at the finish to get a classy medal and finisher's shirt. Again, congratulations on a job well done, and will see you again in 2007.

Excellent race

As a local, I wanted to volunteer to see what it takes to organize a race and run it. I met some great people at the expo. The goodie bag was great - a hat plus a performance shirt. For any woman who complains that her small size wasn't there - arrive early!! Be thankful that you're not getting another boring t-shirt. Larger races charging $100 don't have this nice of a bag. The course was rolling and fun. My pace group leader was awesome (thanks John!). It was an overall good race. I highly recommend it.

I ran the HM - a great experience!

I am 54 years-old and I started running 11 months ago - and I am hooked. This was my first race and I have enjoyed the journey of getting here as much as the race itself. I ran the half-marathon this year, but I plan to do the marathon next year, and hopefully one before Frederick. As this was my first race, I have nothing to compare it to, but I thought the organization and volunteer support was outstanding - from pre-race communication by email, packet-pickup and overall festive spirit, to the prompt posting of results on the web within hours. The course was varied but there were no major hills. Having fans along much of the way kept it interesting and fun! I think it is a great experience for 1st-timers - not so big as to overwhelm and intimidate, but large enought to create an experience!

Fun and accessible

The course is rolling and passes through the historic part of Frederick as well as residential and commercial areas. At the start, the temperature was in the mid-40's, but it was over 60 when I finished fewer than four hours later. The age group prizes were baseballs with the marathon logo on them. The aid stations were about every two miles. At the first couple aid stations, the water was offered in Gatorade cups and that confused runners. Gel packs were offered at least three times on the course. Traffic control was good. The start and finish in the baseball stadium were fun. Bathroom lines moved rapidly due to multiple stalls. The pre-race worship service was uplifting. The parking was free and convenient. The volunteers were friendly and had an attitude of wanting to help however they could. I recommend this race, especially to those who like history; take the time to see the Frederick area with the Civil War history, covered bridges, unique architecture. The spring trees were flowering and fragrant. The visitor's center offered free parking for three hours while doing a walking tour of downtown that I found very interesting. Flights were available into Baltimore, Dulles, or Washington National (Reagan), and then it was a 45-60 minute drive to Frederick.

Small-town racing at its best

Many good things: The start and finish at a minor league baseball park made for a fun atmosphere, and lots of parking, bathrooms, etc. Course has numerous gentle hills, none challenging, but enough to break up the monotony. Well-organized and supportive volunteers. Lots of Dunkin Donuts at the end. Also, there are enough runners to prevent one from being alone, but it was never crowded. (The relay event helps a lot on this score as it draws dozens of teams and helps draw more fans too.) I set P.R.'s here twice. The less good: Crowd support wanes in the last 6 miles, which is also the least interesting part of the course. Weather has been erratic, though it was perfect in 2006 (albeit the height of spring allergy season).

a great race!

I ran in '06, and aside from some very minor complaints, I thought this was a terrific experience. The weather could not have been better this year (partly cloudy and a high around 60). As others have commented, the course isn't exactly flat, but compared to where I train, the "hills" were very gentle and weren't anything to complain about. Well, I actually didn't like going uphill at 25, but I wasn't liking much of anything at that point. The packet pick-up was well organized and the expo was scaled as expected for a smallish race. They gave us technical T's, but only had L and XL for the women. Race organizers everywhere - we want shirts that fit! We're not all big women! There was water and Gatorade every two miles, but the first two water stops had problems - one ran out of cups, the next ran out of water. But the rest of the stops were well stocked, and I was able to stay hydrated for the remainder of the race. Port-o-johns were plentiful along the course. The route runs through downtown, a very charming course, through neighborhoods, around a park, and eventually we did a big loop in the country. The banked curve for what felt like nearly a mile wasn't the best surface for my tired legs after 18 miles, but it was pretty. An entire lane was blocked to traffic and the police officers stationed at nearly every intersection (thanks Frederick police!) so we didn't have to even think about what cars were doing. The city seems to embrace this marathon as its own, and the crowd support was impressive. People would go from one cheering area to the next, so we saw some of the same encouraging faces again and again. They made us all feel like Kenyans. There were abundant volunteers to keep us on course, so there was no worry about getting lost or missing a turn. The finish in the baseball stadium is a fun way to end the race, and there was plenty of water, donuts, and beer. We were given finisher's shirts and a nice medal too. I loved it and would encourage others to run this marathon.

A really enjoyable run

I've run big ones and small ones, and Frederick was just about right. Well organized and supported from the marshals (loved the "OBEY ME" t-shirts). The town is scenic and the route, for the most part, was enjoyable. The course is not flat; it rolls up and down most of the way, but the grades are not extreme. The organizers ordered up PERfect weather. A nice crowd but not too big; you can PR here.

fun & friendly

I have been an avid runner for years, however this was my first marathon. The Frederick staff was super friendly and personable. They did everything from sending weekly email updates, to holding training runs, and had organized pace groups. There was PLENTY of water, Gatorade, GU, and port-o's on the course as well! The course itself was fun - it went through historic downtown Frederick, some local neighborhoods, and some open farm country. There was a real community feel to this race! The course wasn't terribly hilly - nothing too long or too steep. Nice rolling hills, a decline following every incline (can't beat that!). All in all, Frederick was a GREAT race!

Great Marathon Organization and Volunteers

Hats off to all the organizers and volunteers who made this race very enjoyable. From the dancing parking guide to donuts at the end, everything was well done. Volunteers at all corners, great traffic control, friendly help... can't say enough. The stadium was a great site before and after. Minor adjustment for next year would be more water/Gatorade at the first water station. Two great shirts and a hat! Thanks, Frederick, for a great day.

With a few adjustments, will be a great race.

The evening before the race, the blind led the blind as people were very confused as to the location of the pasta dinner, 5K race start, etc. But the next day at the race itself, it turned out to be a pleasant event with great weather, a beautiful course through residential neighborhoods and farm country, cheerful volunteers, and a great finish in the stadium. Better (more doesn't necessarily mean better) communication in the future, including improved directions and this will be a great event.

Nice Race on a Nice Day

I truly enjoyed the race. I think one of my favorite memories will be "high fiving" with a line of little kids (4 - 7 year-olds, I'd guess) who were cheering on the curb. It may have slowed me down a few seconds then, but it gave me a boost in spirit that carried me through to the end.

If you haven't run Frederick, you should. The course takes you through some lovely areas... but be ready for a few hills toward the end. This is a good-size race, and although the spectators were few, they were quite enthusiastic. The race was well organized and started right on time. Thanks for the great weather!

Progressive Marathon Feedback

The Frederick Progressive Marathon is a non-competitive race in which individuals complete 26.2 miles of the marathon over the course of several weeks and track mileage on an official weekly log that is handed in at race check-in - an ideal race for those who are unable (or unwilling?) to endure the full 26.2 course all at once. (I understand so far Frederick and San Francisco are the only marathons that have progressives.) Every participant receives a beautiful medal upon crossing the finish line. I did like the fact that the first .5 and the last .7 miles of the race were run togther as a group and all on the same course. I do have two disappointments with this race: (1) "Frederick Marathon in Progress" shirts were promised to all participants at the progressive launch but were not available until later. As an alternative to picking up shirts later at a local shop, another option available was to pick up your shirt at final check-in with your bib. I chose to wait until check-in since I live far from Frederick, but that day I was told that all the shirts were gone. If one was earmarked for me, why were they all gone? I was given a 5K shirt instead as a consolation, which was kind but it was not the same. (2) I would have preferred to have a more prominent finish line and have the medal placed around my neck. The finish line was unmarked and medals were just handed to you. In the future, a more ceremonious close to the progressive marathon should be organized. On a brighter note, I found the spectator base to be great and encouraging! Do I recommend the progressive marathon overall? Yes I do. It is fun and encourages you to keep running!

PR Course

My comments are actually about the half marathon. Overall this was a very nice event; great scenery, nice course, good fans. I will definitely run it next year. However, there were some glitches that need to be addressed. The organization was okay. I especially loved the frequent emails before the event. These were fun and informative. The bus driver had no idea how to get us into the race start and we were re-routed twice before we yelled to just let us off the bus and we'd walk. Then buses were not available until over 1 1/2 hours after we finished the half marathon. This was the most frustrating part of the event - the bus situations. Need to work on this for the future. Lastly, the first two water stops were out of water by the time we got there. I suspect that since the 1/2 was added, the calculations were off on how much was needed. I'd consider this minor since future stops seemed to be okay.

Decent first-time experience in Frederick

I actually had a great time doing the marathon in Frederick. The weather was GREAT, most of the course was pretty nice, and I was just feeling great. But there were a couple of things that occurred that kept me from ranking this marathon higher. First, the course.... I don't know who decided the last 9 miles should be in the middle of farm land but I think it was big mistake. There were very few spectators out there and it felt very isolated with an "I'm never gonna make it!" kind of feel. I would have liked if that loop was first and then the rest of the course happened afterwards. Also, that last loop seemed to have a couple more hills, which wouldn't have been so daunting in the beginning, but seeing 2 hills as you run over 2 overpasses in mile 25 was VERY tough. Traffic was pretty much kept separate from the rest of the course, with the exception of one driver not paying attention to the police and almost running me over in mile 16, but everything was okay. The organization wasn't too bad but lost a lot in their ranking when they ran out of water and Gatorade at miles 2 and 4. Granted, I'm not a speed demon but even the slowpokes need to keep hydrated! The rest of the water stations were better however. Finally, spectators were merely okay. They ranged from very excited and motivating at the beginning to somewhat bored and uninterested in the middle, excited again at the half, nothing for 9 miles, then more motivating for the last 1.5 miles. Maybe this is normal for smaller marathons but I felt like I expected just a bit more. Overall, I did enjoy my experience and was happy that my first marathon was in Frederick. Would I do it again there, maybe... but most likely not if the farmland part was the last loop. But, I'd still recommend it to other runners. I hope this helps!

Do yourself a favor -- run in Frederick!

I ran in 2005, and it was a great experience. The course is well laid out, going through the center of town as well as some of the farm country. Finishing in the minor league baseball stadium makes you feel like you're entering the Olympic stadium going for the gold! This is a good-sized race, with enough people so that you don't feel lonely, but not so many that you're tripping over other runners, and it takes only a few seconds to cross the start line. Fans were enthusiastic and friendly, enjoying the scenery from their front lawns. The organizers did a great job with plenty of water stations and food. At the end it's a real party atmosphere. There's tons of food, including Krispy Kreme donuts, and your friends and family can join you in the stadium at the end. Run Frederick; it's loads of fun!

Great experience, great weather

This was my first marathon, so I can't compare to others, but what an experience! The weather was perfect (apparently the 2003 race had 4 inches of snow, so date was moved from late March to early May), except for a headwind briefly starting at about mile 18, which was not welcome. The fans were very encouraging, with lots of water stops. My only organizational gripe was that the marker at mile 1 HAD to have been placed considerably long, causing some brief self-doubt. I'm a little surprised to read other comments stating emphatically, 'course is not flat'--it rolls just a bit in the final third--guess I'm from the local area and accustomed to some hills, which this course didn't have. Other first-timers need not hesitate. I'll definitely be back next year.

Well supported course - Cool Weather

First of all, I had just run a tough and muddy trail marathon the day before this race, so was still somewhat delerious when running this one. Cool packet pick-up area ~ at a baseball stadium. The course was very well supported with great aid stations and police and marshall support throughout. Comfortable weather on race day, especially since the year prior was snowy. Friendly people in the marathon as well as in Frederick! Also liked the finishers shirt ~ simple and something that you wouldn't mind wearing.

Great race if you like a lot of rolling hills.

I enjoyed the course; it is very scenic, even though there were a lot of rolling hills. As you go out past mile 17, it is just you and the elements with very little support. The race director and the volunteers were OUTSTANDING - nice touch finishing in the ball park with the crowed to cheer you across the finish line. I agree with an earlier comment that the use of a sign for packet pick-up and a separate location for the 5K sign-ups and pick-up would shorten the lines, and people wouldn't waste time standing in the wrong line. I will run this again next year, and add more hills to my training. The only reason I gave the course 4 stars is because the race application states FLAT & FAST. If your not from the Frederick area, those are HILLS.

Well-organized and charming

Even though this was only the third iteration, everything was organized. There was a friendly, charming feel to the race lent to by the vocal group singing at the start - a nice touch! The course was not flat, though I live and train in similar terrain so that didn't bother me. The wind affected me a bit and doesn't usually, so I'm not sure if it was stronger than normal or if it was because of the nagging calf cramps I experienced. There were plenty of port-a-johns, plenty of water and Gatorade, and the post-race spread was nice. The only suggestion I have is to put signs above the registration tables for the appropriate queue, to alleviate some confusion as to which line is for what function.

Very enjoyable weekend

This race was a great experience! My friend and I came down from Pittsburgh for the weekend. She ran the twilight 5k the night before, and I an the marathon. The 5k was folowed by fireworks at the Harry Grove Stadium, a minor league ballpark. Both races start at the parking lot and end on the field. We watched each other race, and both races were spectator-friendly, with many easy-to-get-to spots. The weather for the marathon was great - 60's with some refreshing wind. There were about 500 runners, plus MANY relay racers... the race includes both a 2- and 4-person relay. I was always surrounded by lots of people, but not so many that it caused me to have to change my pace or weave at any point. One caveat to anyone looking for a PR... THIS IS NOT A FLAT COURSE. It wasn't too hard, but had more rolling hills than any of the 6 other courses I have run. The aid stations and volunteers were excellent. The course was interesting. My only complaint was that I got to the expo about an hour before it was over, and many of the vendors, etc. had already packed up. We will be back for sure, though. GREAT JOB ORGANIZERS!!!

Overall, very nice event

Very nice marathon. The aid stations, crowd support, and run were nice. Running through downtown was a great view. The only downside to the event was that I feel you might want to hesitate about calling it a 'flat course.' I must have run up 50 hills, albeit, not all big, but not much level terrain for the entire run. At the aid stations, a suggestion is to eliminate the plastic cups for the water and use a paper cup that one can fold, like the Gatorade ones, which would make for easier drinking while running. The wind this year was a fierce adversary as well. Thank you, Frederick, for an enjoyable event. I plan on being back in the future.

Friendly smallish race

Packet pick-up and race day chip pick-up went surprisingly fast. Very efficient organization. Police and crowd support were awesome, although the last half of the race left the city and support was sparse. Just when you need it too! I live here and should have known that it wouldn't be 'flat'. The city part of the run was flat by my standards but around mile 19 when the course meandered out in the country things became 'rolling hills'. This plus the lack of crowd support at the tail end of the marathon are my only complaints.

I went to Frederick because I was looking for a marathon and it fit my schedule. What a blessing! It was a nice sized field of runners. The course through the town was beautiful, although the haziness of the day did not do it justice. The police did a great job and the fans had spirit. All the volunteers were wonderful, and the goodies at the end were much appreciated. Met a lot of great folks, and my son enjoyed the 5K. All this, and Barbara Fritchie too!

Very Good Race

Unlike last year's cold and snow, this year was hot and humid - not unexpected for early May. It's a good course, but this is not a race for people who expect a marathon to be flat or downhill for 26+ miles. I guess it's a matter of taste, but a Krispy Kreme donut definitely did not sit well on my stomach after drinking Gatorade throughout the race.

No way was this flat and fast, very hilly

Very nice run. Many supporters from the organizers to the police to just strangers in the streets cheering. But a special thanks to the male and female road bikers who were great motivators; it seemed they did the race with me. Maybe next year there will be more of the roadies. I ran Philly and Disney. I was looking for a fast, flat course. Instead, I got a strong hill workout. I don’t think this is recommended if you want to PR. Definitely recommended to make you stronger.

Great small race

Pros: Small group. People seeded themselves correctly. Good organization. Great support from police. Perfect day for laying in the grass at Groves Stadium after the race. Well stocked food and refreshments at the end. Friendly group of people. Cons: Being a flatlander, I found the rolling hills took their toll, but leave the course as-is (I'll have to find a hill to practice on before I come back). Humidity was high but at least it was overcast for most of the race (it beats the snow they had last year).

Pretty, little hilly, well organized

No major complaints. Not a PR course with numerous hills. Website decribes it as, "flat and fast with 100 variations". 100 variations every 100' makes it neither flat nor fast. Very well organized. Would have given 5 stars EXCEPT BROCHURE PROMISED CAROUSEL, JUMPING CASTLE 'BOUNCE HOUSE' UP AND RUNNING. My wife & 2-year old were disappointed that the finish had neither after their long drive to watch me finish.

Brrrr! Great job for a inaugural marathon anyway!

After my first marathon (Marine Corps 2002) I was looking for a race to keep me training through the winter, lest my motivation flag. This was it. I trained all winter in brutal conditions, telling my friends and family: 'Well, I gotta be prepared for race day.' They still thought I was crazy. Winter weather at a late-March marathon in Maryland? Uh huh. Right. Well, I had the last laugh this time. The rain switched over to snow by mile 1. After that, when it wasn't snowing, it was cold and windy, but I never heard anyone complaining, least of all the spectators. They were few and far between but very enthusiastic. The aid stations were more than adequate. This is a great small-town race. I was afraid that after the weather disaster/fluke the first run of this race would be the last, but this year they're having it in May. So, which do you want, snow or heat? :-) And watch out for the hills. Frederick is in the foothills of the mountains and it shows. I'll be volunteering at this race this year, but not running it as the Bay Bridge 10K is the same day. I highly recommend running it. It's a small-town race with a lot of potential.

Great initial effort in horrible weather

Like most everyone has noted, the day was unbelievably bad. For me it became solely about finishing under really cold, wet, yucky conditions. The smaller field of runners was great in some ways, but as the field got sparse around mile 28 and the mental part became a real struggle, it would have been nice to talk with someone. I was really impressed with the volunteers and the few folks who came out to cheer/sympathize. I didn't think the course was notably hard. They seemed to have goofed counts with the medals, and those of us who came in late got cheesier, undated medals. But all in all, I thought it was really good and hope to run again in 2004.

Exceptional race in blizzard-like condititions.

The rolling course included runs through the historic district of Frederick as well as along scenic country roads. In spite of continuous snow, wind and slush, the race was exceptionally well organized and managed. County police did a great job controlling traffic intersections, and the numerous fluid stations were well staffed with cheerful and helpful volunteers. Post-race indoor accomodations, food and drink were more than welcome.

Good first effort-Room to improve

This is a difficult event to assess because of the awful race conditions. It was raining at the start, shortly followed by freezing rain after the start and steady snowfall during most of the marathon. The 3 inches of snow that they officially talk about don't do it justice. I cleared handfulls of snow off my hat while I ran. I was soaked, cold from start to finish and checked often to see if all my body parts were still attached. The medal was pretty mediocre for an inaugural event. The shirt was OK and nothing real fancy. Nice part was that it didn't have a bunch of advertising on it. To the volunteers and police officers who worked in horrible conditions a huge and I mean huge thank you. Your efforts were beyond the call of duty. There weren't many spectators which I know was attributable to the weather. However, doubtful that there would be many spectators in the office park, cemetary and highway overpasses that you have to negotiate. The back half of the course is out in the country which doesn't lend it to spectators anyway so I doubt that this will improve in the future. Don't be fooled by the elevation change of 100ft. This course is a rolling hill marathon. Long upgrades with little downgrade help. It also is 3 out and backs because they have a small side road added on to the back half to add mileage which only adds to the dullness of this part of the course. I don't remember a mile without a hill to climb. Not sure why they had chip timing. Only mats were at the start, half and finish. Mile markers needed bigger signs and a balloon or two would have helped. I missed a couple because they were small, covered with snow and it wasn't used as a water station. Keep at it. This could be a neat marathon in the future.

Great Potential

This was next to my worst time in 12 marathons. The weather was absolutely awful; 3 inches of snow fell during the race with icy slush and wind to boot! Having said that this marathon has potential to be a wonderful spring time event. The course was not difficult and we ran through beautiful historic areas of town then out into the countryside. I also hope that the organizers keep the date three to four weeks before Boston since this makes it a great last long training run before tapering. Having run DC last year and having been 'ripped off' this year, I'll definately choose Frederick again in 2004; besides it truly is a much nicer course. The three stars for spectators is for numbers only. For the few that braved the cold, wet and windy weather I'll give '10!'

Good inaugural effort

OK, the weather was abominable, but that's always a possibility with an early Spring marathon. The lack of spectators was probably attributable to the weather- I didn't want to be out in it either! It was great to be able to hang out in the gym before the race, although not having the chips available until the morning of the race wasn't the preferred setup. The start of the race was orderly, and on time, albeit without much hoopla. Rolling course throughout; I don't remember one flat mile; no major hills, though. Well-stocked aid stations- kudos to the volunteer at about mile 18 who was shoveling a path thru the slush for us, and to the volunteer(s) at the 2nd gel station who offered already-opened packets. Some of us spent a lot of time waiting around after the race for age-group awards, only to find out, when we asked, that age group awards would be mailed. Nice shirt, mediocre medal.

First-rate operation!

Despite an unexpected snowstorm, this race went on seemingly without a hitch! The times were slowed due to weather, but it was still an awesome course (scenic, not too hilly) and the volunteers were plentiful and encouraging. My only complaint is that the promised GU was not where it was supposed to be (a minor detail now, but a crisis at the time. ha!).

Horrible weather but I liked the smaller race

This was my very first marathon and I haven't raced since my HS cross country days 20 years ago. I'm a more solitary runner and I liked that there weren't so many people racing. The temp was 34F with light rain at the start followed immediately by LOTS of wet snow. With the 1/2' of slush on the ground after mile 7 my shoes were full of water and anyone passing splashed slushy water on your legs. The course had only a few very smallish hills so it was not challenging from that aspect. I think some of the crowd was kept away by the weather but those that were there were very encouraging. I think more than a few runners suffered from hypothermia and the organizers didn't seem to pick up on this as I would have expected - they did make sure people had foil blankets to wrap up in though. I also was looking for energy gel that was suppose to be at miles 13 and 20. I happened to see them on the table at mile 11 (I think)and took one and they were offered at mile 22(I think). I'd run this again probably and hope for better weather.

Course was great, weather was interesting!

I have ran 5 other marathons dating back to the old Maryland Marathon back in 1976. I have done two in the rain but this was my first in a snow storm. It was an extremly flat course for the Frederick area of Maryland. I give it a 5 star rating because packet pick-up Sunday went smoothly and the amount of spectators that stood out in at time blizzard conditions were a great benefit to this race. For an inaugural race I think it came off very well.

It was rough!

I want to thank all the volunteers who braved these awful conditions, esp the fellow Daryl, who helped me in the gym, bought me a cup of hot coffee and made sure I was okay... suffering from hypothermia. He was an absolute godsend! Better luck next year, but this town is a ball! And much potential for the event.

Weather didn't defeat a great inaugural marathon

This was a wonderfully organized and executed marathon. Gatorade and water stops were frequent and well-staffed; there was a volunteer at every turn or intersection of the course; and the traffic control was exemplary. The pasta dinner the night before was efficient and was a fundraiser for the local high school. The course itself was a nice mix of city residential and quiet rural. The few brave spectators were vocal and good-natured. But the weather... it was dreadful. 33 degrees, wind-driven sleet and snow, slush on the roads in many areas. I hope this marathon gets perfect weather next year -- it deserves it.

Great Race Unfortunate Weather

This was my 32nd marathon and I have never run in such nasty horrible weather. It snowed very heavy almost the entire race and I was completely soaked and cold by mile 4. Nothing like running over 20 miles in slush. This was unfortunate being the 1st Inaugural Frederick Marathon. However, the race director and volunteers and fans did an outstanding job considering these conditions. I can't imagine how nasty it was to stand out there all those hours passing out drinks and cheering for all the runners. There was a huge number of police officers doing traffic control and the course was very safe. The support was greatly appreciated. I believe the course was rather scenic and was probably very nice however most of the runners could really only think of surviving the conditions. I hope the race organizers aren't discouraged and come back next year for another try. Running a race like this may not be fun but it builds character and I for one will always remember the First Annual Frederick Marathon.
