New Course, Great Spectators, Need more Porta Pots

My first marathon & overall a wonderful experience! Expo & packet pick up was good - local running store booths, pacer tent, free airbrush tattoos, lots of booths for upcoming races. Parking for expo was free in downtown KC at Union station. Race day parking was also free but be prepared for a bit of a walk to the start (nice warm up!) there were a lot of porta pots at the start but even so the lines were long. No corrals but pacers had people grouped around them. I started with 4:40 pace group - my pacer was VERY Enthusiastic & fun but a bit after halfway point he handed off to another pacer & slowed down (though he did tell us all he was planning to do that). I ended with the 4:50 pacer who offered great words of encouragement! The course was new this year & everyone said much improved - still lots of hills but more strategically located along the course compared to years past. I'm from KC & train regularly on real steep grades & didn't mind the hills at all. Spectators were AMAZING! saw lots of great signs & they were wonderful cheering us on. Aid stations were well stocked & it was clear when you wanted water then sports drink, volunteers very friendly. Later aid stations also had Gu & bananas & even had a pickle juice & chicken broth station at Mile 24. Finish line was amazing though I didn't stay for the food (I was wanting brunch - recommend First Watch if you like breakfast after marathon). My only issue with this race was first few aid stations had a line of porta pots but only 1 actually open (?!?!) and so lines were long - that REALLY slowed me down! I hope they fix that next year otherwise really awesome race!

Running in the Rain and other Musings

Kansas City plays a great host to the marathon. The town was fun to explore. I took part in the I-35 Challenge, running on Saturday in KC and Sunday in Des Moines earning a 3rd medal and a chance to see 2 great cities. I stayed at the Home 2 Suites hotel which was a block to the Start/Finish and the Expo at Union Station. I highly recommend this hotel as it took great care of the runners and set out breakfast early for us. Race day was pouring out and most runners waited till the last minute to head to the starting chute to avoid the downpour. The race organizers seriously misjudged the length of the chute to accommodate the self seeded crowd and did not have openings in the fence to get into the corral. It was a hot mess. Runners pushing and shoving all along the outside of the fences being seriously rude and shoving and bumping into each other. Slow runners and walkers need to go to the back but they always want to line up in front for some reason. This could be improved upon. Anyhow, the rain didn't really dampen my spirits. I like running hills, & I don't mind rain so that was a plus. The spectators and volunteers who braved the weather were VERY energetic. There were water stations every mile, I recall. That was so awesome. I really liked the scenery. We went through a lot of neighborhoods and they held a contest for best water station. If you are a fast marathoner, be prepared to have to deal with slow half runners who will be all over the course in the last few miles. The last 3/4 mile is downhill and fast which was nice. I was pumped to see the finish line in the distance in front of the veterans memorial. Didn't stop at the BBQ finish line party. The park was waaaaaay too overcrowded to even think of waiting in such a long line for food. We left and headed to Des Moines to do it all again the next day. I would recommend this race and someday may do it again as we all had a nice time.

Outstanding Race

Really great race. Course gives a great overview of the City,(only downside was a lot of turns to get through some of the neighborhoods and could have been a bit better marked but not anything that would cause a problem) organization was top notch and even in a BBQ city, post race they had a vegetarian sandwich option that was really pretty good. And let's talk about fan and volunteer support. Absolutely great under any circumstances, but throw in the fact that it rained most of the race (and pretty hard at times) this was just an amazing statement about this race, organization and city. A tip of the hat and thank you to organizers, volunteers and spectators.

By turns, KC surprises, entertains, disappoints

This is a well-developed, well supported race on a rolling course that displays Kansas City's scenic jewels and best neighborhoods, with a fun and exhilarating downhill finish A corps of smiling, enthusiastic volunteers staff the race expo and the course itself, with an abundance of well-organized aid stations (even the PowerAide was well mixed, tho sometimes a bit on the weak side), and no shortage of porta-potties. The race medal is attractive and heavy, and the race swag is as nice as the tech race shirt was un-inspiring. Despite running the first half in a light rain, I enjoyed the event and would recommend it. Now that the nice stuff is out of the way, there is room for improvement. The self-seeded start was a mess, with pace groups (a runner's best indication of where to queue up) too close together. As a result, there wasn't enough room for the runners on the course, so, runners stayed on the side, and moved into the course through a porous start fence once the race was underway. The result was chaotic, dangerous, and slow. A race with the experience of this one SHOULD know how much room to allot, and expand the length of the start area accordingly. On-course, some of the timing was non-functional, including that for the Garmin Quarter Mile challenge. (If organizers knew the challenge wasn't able to be timed, letting the runners know would have been appropriate, since I and others compromised our overall time to hit that challenge distance hard.) Following the race, there was a pronounced shortage of food. I was slightly ahead of mid-pack as a marathon finisher, and found fruit and water at the finish line, and beer beyond, but nothing else I could eat. I saw others with chocolate milk but was told that it was gone, and the chit for a BBQ sandwich is of little use to this runner who cannot eat pork. I did get a card for Chic-Fil-A. but the card itself was inedible and I found no place to redeem it. There were NO other food alternatives, either in the post-race area of the park, nor in the VIP room. Travel expenses were quite reasonable, including airfare, other hotel accommodations, free race-day parking, and rental car rates that were a relative bargain.

Cold, wet, hilly, but really nice people

Great race. Not the best course to try for a PB due to the hills and sharp turns, but cool stuff to look at. Great organization. I have never seen this many water/poweraid points in a race. It was like every mile. There were lots of pacers as well. The bag drop was easy and food beer at the end were nice additions. Spectators were fantastic. Almost no one was out in the first 10 miles or so, but that was probably because it was ~50F and raining. The second half there were lots of folks out with candy and stuff. I would do this race again and recommend it to someone if your in town this time next year.

Worth the drive

I ran this race as part of the I-35 challenge. It was a little hillier than I expected, but I think that made for better variety on the course. Great course support and volunteers (although one aid station around mile 25 seemed mostly interested in talking among themselves). Finish line festivities sounded fun, but I didn't get to partake in much due to needing to get to the Des Moines expo (3 hour drive). The bbq sandwich was awesome though, fantastic flavor w/o any sauce. The main host hotel (Westin Crown Center) was perfect for race logistics, right at the start and finish line. Ask for late checkout when you make your reservation though, an email right before the race said no late checkouts, but they gave us ours that we asked for when making the reservation. I would highly recommend this to 50 staters, particularly if I-35 continues to run both races on the same weekend.

Rolling hills & Perfect weather in '18

Great scenic course through beautiful KC neighborhoods, a lot of hills, perfect running weather in 2018: slight breeze clear blue skies. Great expo, great pre & post race. A lot of fan support. One to do again!

Challenging course that shows off the city

This is a hilly course but it wasn't as bad as I expected after reading reviews. That being said, be ready for the last few miles to really challenge you; I wish I had been mentally prepared for those-though the last 3/4 mile down hill was fun. The course also takes you through some fantastic neighborhoods and past some of the city's landmarks, which was really nice. Overall, this is a well-run marathon and I love that the sponsor hotel is RIGHT next to the start and finish. The finish festival, however, needs some work. It seemed so geared for the half marathoners. I am a slightly above-average marathoner (3:45) and there was very little food and beer choices left when I got there. I can't imagine what was there an hour later. I also felt bad for my two daughters who waited patiently with their mother for me to finish before getting to play on the bounce houses only to have all the bounce houses taken down right as we got to them. Again, I finished in under 4 hours! What's the point of having an after party if you are going to start tearing down the party with most of the full marathoners still on the course? It's a good race and I would do it again if I ever get off my 50 states kick, but it's definitely geared toward the half marathoners so keep that in mind.

Virtual Goodie Bag (Tasting Room Wine NY)

The race itself was fantastic! Great Course and Great live music. However, the virtual goodie bags were a complete bust and the finish line celebration was subpar. To receive any one of the 'virtual' goodies, which were just slight discounts, you had to purchase a fairly expensive item. So in reality, the only way to receive ANY benefit from the $120 race beyond the run itself was to go online and spend even MORE money in order to receive a slight discount. After spending a good deal of time sifting through the offers, I settled on the only one I could afford, a tasting wine package from Tasting Room NY. Unfortunately, this $7 purchase never arrived, and I was then charged $168 for a 'membership' that I had never actually joined. To be clear, the company never shipped me any wine, and charged me over $175. After learning about the charges I called Tasting Room NY to ask about the charges and was met with rude and vulgar resistance. After being told several times that I would be charged the $175 no matter what I did at that point, I asked the male employee to please cancel my 'membership,' at which time he hung up on me. Overall, I was very impressed with the race course, but the virtual goodie bag was a bust and had an incredibly poor experience with this particular sponsor.

Beautiful course with downhill finish

I loved this marathon! For me, it was just the right size, festive in some sections, peaceful in a few. The crowd was fun and supportive. The marathon runs from downtown to Liberty Memorial, Westport, the Plaza, the Nelson-Atkins, Loose Park, Ward Parkway, Waldo, Brookside, Paseo, and back to downtown. I'm from Kansas City, but was still struck by the beautiful path we were taking through the city. Overall, you are climbing gradually the first half (to 75th Street), and then head downhill for the second half. There are also some rolling hills throughout the course. The biggest climb is Sunset Drive, but that's also one of the prettiest streets on the course. I appreciated the downhill finish, which lasts for several miles. I hope to run this many more times!

Beautiful urban course showcases the city well

Moderately hilly course that runs through the pretty parts of the city that keeps your interest. Only moderate amount of spectators but those that came out were very vocal. Well aided run with gatorade and gu stations every 1-2 miles. Nice hooded race shirt. Good food and drink at the finish with beer, hamburgers, chick a filet, chocolate milk and more. Really enjoyed this race. The medal went over the line in size and gaugyness. Prefer smaller and interesting local designs. Parking was extremely convenient for the race start and free. Plenty of porta potties at the start and on the course Would do it again.

gorgeous but challenging course

I registered last minute because another race was cancelled. I stayed at the Sheraton which was very nice (but got bed bugs on my neck) so beware. Westin was right there too at the start/finish. Expo was organized but small. Shirt is a thin hoodie which was different. Course was hilly so challenging for me but was a tour of the city. They ran you thru the most gorgeous parts of town, homes were incredible, parks all green. Aid stations were adequate with great volunteers...thank you. Spectators were intermittent, but where they were located was full of enthusiasm. I thought it was very organized. Hotels at the start/finish were perfect. I really enjoyed this

Beautiful Course, Well Organized, Affordable

This marathon is well organized and has a beautiful course. I did not know much about Kansas City before I arrived and I did not know what to expect. Someone told me Kansas City is big into fountains and you will see plenty throughout the course. Also look for the giant shuttlecocks at about six miles. There are some hills on the course but nothing a New Englander could complain about. The expo was fun but not overwhelming. If you need cheering spectators on the entire course, you might want to find another race but if you need some gentle motivation like I did, the pacers were awesome.

Scenic course, excellent pacers

The course is hilly. It also lets you experience many of KCMOs varied neighborhood and scenery. The pace groups that my family experienced worked perfectly for us. They lay out their plan on the website; the pacers we used understood it; and they made it work for their runners.

Beautiful Course

I really enjoyed this marathon. This is a great way to see some of the most beautiful parts of the city. The course is very hilly so I would recommend incorporating hills into your training if you sign up for this race. The medal is awesome. Overall, this is a very nice race.

Beautiful well organized fall marathon

This was my 4th marathon and my goal was to qualify for Boston 2016. I did it, finished in 3:37. So freaking excited about that!!!! The weather was fantastic, very well organized expo, beautiful medal, and awesome tech shirt. The food after was delicious with BBQ sandwiches and chocolate milk. Even Chick Fil A was walking around giving out chicken sandwiches. I think this was an added bonus. The course was challenging at times. Train on lots of hills and you will be fine. I loved that the Crown Center was open early morning hours before the race with some shops open inside and the bathrooms too. Awesome! For the first time I ran with a pace group. This grop was from Smart Pacing and they are phenomenal. I high recommend doing this. Since this was my first time running this particular marathon and I didn't know the course they knew exactly how to pace the group. My family was able to cheer me on in several locations which really was an energy boost. The spectator support was fantastic. Well done Kansas City!! I look forward to coming back in 2015!!

Excellent marathon highlighting Kansas City

The KC Marathon is an excellent race that shows off the best, most scenic and historic districts and neighborhoods of Kansas City. Both packet pickup and the Start/Finish line are in Crown Center, which is a great place to accomodate both; just be sure to arrive with a good 20-30 minutes to spare as the port-a-john lines can be long (but move fast) and the starting corral starts filling up with 15 or so minutes to go. The course has some challenging hills; the first mile warms your legs up with a gradual 100 foot climb before it goes back down that same 100 the next mile. One of the two big, long climbs is just before the 2.5 mile mark, just past historic Union Station, where you'll climb 140 ft. to Liberty Memorial, then climb another 60 ft. a quarter mile later. There are also notable ascents around mile 11 and mile 21, but once you've reached the peak around mile 23, the final 5K is all downhill by about 150 ft. to the finish line. As a whole this is a hilly marathon by most standards, but a PR or something close can be earned here with smart pacing and patience. As menacing as a few of the climbs can be, the downhills can be equally as generous, and though there are very few flat parts (if any), valuable seconds and minutes can be made up on the rolling downhills if you are prepared and adept at doing so. Course support is more than ample, water and Gatorade at all stations with GU and fruit at some of the final stations in the last 10 miles. The beautiful parkways and boulevards throughout the route are one of the best parts of the course, and KC residents do a good job of coming out to support and enthusiastically cheer on the runners. The finish line festival is a good time, lots of action and excitement around Crown Center and a good spread of food and KC's own Boulevard beer to celebrate your accomplishment with. The finish medal is one worth showing off with pride; full color and tastefully big but not oversized. The finishers tech shirt is also very nice, with different sizing/styles for men and women. All things considered this is an outstanding race that makes me proud to call this area home; it has fast grown into one of the best marathons in the Midwest. For KC-area runners like myself it is a staple of the season schedule, for out-of-towners I would strongly recommend making the trip to come run KC, you will not be disappointed!

Poorly organized marathon in a nice town

The highlight was having Bill Rodgers as announcer at the starting line. The course in general was OK but nothing spectacular. One major issue with the course was about 1-2 miles of the course was on unpaved roads around the 16 mile mark of the marathon. I never received my t-shirt (registered at the expo) - despite asking about it over email after the race. I placed in my age group and never received age group award. I was initially placed in the wrong age group. In my contact with the organizers about all these issues, they seemed to not care much. Definitely a contrast with other races I've participated in. Before the race, there was a lot of controversy over the organizers deciding not to provide finishers shirts. They had done this in the past and the website included this as a promise until shortly before the race. Won't be running the race again...

Best pacing group ever

An exceptionally well organized race. Hilly but scenic course, with lots of variety. Nice downhill finish. Beautiful medal, nice shirt. Enjoyed the free beer, but the thimble-sized BBQ sample was a little silly. The highlight for me was the Smart Pacing team. A very course specific plan, with a nice easy start, strong middle, and even effort up and down the hills was well-planned and brilliantly executed. I wish I could run with them every time. Thanks again to Brad and Ron.

Great Course; Great Town; Great Race

KC really rolled out the red carpet for this race - and the results were fantastic. The weather was perfect. The course is challenging, but this is a well publicized fact. While challenging the course is absolutely incredible - winding through beautiful parts of Kansas City (The Plaza, Westport, Power and Light District, Scenic Neighborhoods). The race was also very well organized, and had fantastic volunteer support at each and every aid station. The aid stations even had signs in advance of the station to let you know what to expect at the station (water, gatorade, GU, fruit, vasoline, etc.). The specator support was also strong - although there were a few miles on the back half without bands or overwhelming support. The only downside was the fact that finisher's shirts were originally promised, but not delivered. However, the marathon medals were very nice - and the post-race festivities were a blast. Great Job KC - I'll be back for sure.

Wonderful experience, great pacers!

I really enjoyed this race, the course was challenging but not brutal, the event was well organized, and the smartpacing team was amazing! I wish there were more bands along the full marathon course as it got a bit lonely after the half split off, but the fans were enthusiastic and had fun signs! The medals were gorgeous!

Beautiful course with a few disappointments

My first marathon, although I've run several half marathons and other races. It was a beautiful day in Kansas City with perfect temperatures and no noticeable wind. Beautiful course gave a fantastic tour of a great city. Great aid stations with plenty of water, gatorade, GU, and various snacks along the way. A couple of disappointing aspects: Runners were told 2 days prior to the event that there would be a small unpaved portion of the marathon. This occurred at mile 17 and in my opinion it was pretty terrible. It felt like running on a concrete egg crate, and it lasted for a mile. I thought it was never going to end. At mile 17, the body is already hurting, but this definitely slowed me down and caused more pain in my feet. I understand that all construction can't be controlled, but I feel the organizers did a disservice to the runners in letting them know only 2 days in advance about this issue and that they would not be changing the course, after everyone had already paid and registered. The course is already challenging, and to me, this added another unecessary hurdle that I wasn't prepared for. I got through it, but there was definitely some grumbling and a feeling of relief when that section was completed. When we registered, the website stated we would be receiving the event tech shirt and a finisher's shirt. A month before the race, it was released that the finisher's shirts would only be avail for purchase. These were not pre-made shirts (they were being screen printed upon purchase), and the booth lines were long at both the expo and after the race when I tried to get one. Also a disservice in my opinion to promise two shirts and only give one. This caused a lot of negative feedback various social networking sites. A discounted registration for next year was offered in exchange, but only for a very limited time and I don't plan a year in advance for an out of town race. I finished my first marathon in a little over four hours, but my time has still not been posted online. My chip did not work so no one could track me, which of course was disappointing, but the people in charge of the timing are supposed to be working on it. They have my official time but no info regarding my splits. Crowd support was sparse at times but those that did roll out had funny signs and some great treats and support. Pacing teams were well organized and helped a lot. Host hotel was flawless. Expo was average, really the only swag you got was virtual coupons. The course gives a good challenge. The hills are certainly doable if you train for them (and drive them first to know what to expect) and don't start out too fast. I don't know if my legs were numb, but that third hill around mile 21 was much easier than I had expected. Despite the disappointments, I'd do it again. Had a great weekend in Kansas City afterwards and left to drive home with a new sense of pride.

Excellent marathon course

The weather was ideal and the course moderately challenging. What could be better than this for a properly trained marathoner? More properly trained runners in the field would be better. There were four significant hills apparent on the elevation chart. The first hill at the start was unnoticeable. The second hill near three miles was a half mile, strong one which could be managed so early in the race. The third hill near miles eleven to twelve was long and persistent. I felt that one. From then on we ran simple rolling hills, flat elevation and long downhills to mile twenty one. If your quads were strong enough then you could run rapidly even on the rutted surface from miles sixteen to seventeen. I was concerned about the miles 21 to 23 hill before the race. Running this incline felt surprisingly stress free. The incline was marginally visible it seemed. Maybe that was because I was focused on not running into the walkers, walking three and four across from mile twenty one to the finish. Marathoners run tangent lines from turn to turn to travel the shortest distance from point to point. I found walkers in this line because they were executing the same strategy. I still ran my lines passing through whatever space was available. I clipped one woman accidentally and my watch setting changed. Twice, I yelled for a pathway and no one even turned around or moved aside. I powered through them. Other times, the walkers did create a pathway. This was not a good situation for any of us. Many marathons have this arrangement. What would be the effect if the race course organizers chalked a colorful line on the most efficient line? The walkers would be instructed to avoid this line or turn around if they cross it for safety sake. I appreciate the walker's participation but we essentially share the same space at the same time. A reserved body width pathway for the marathoners is reasonable and a clear safety standard for everyone. We all finished safely this day. Thank you Kansas City.

spectacular organization, extremely well done !

From start to finish this race was spectacularly organized. The course was great, lots to see along the way. A great balance of hills and flats, the volunteers were perfectly placed along the route, cold water and fresh fruit the entire way, couldn't have been done any better. Congratulations to everyone who worked to make such a terrific race possible.

Great course!

This was my second marathon in 2011 and I was warned about the hills. But I trained for them, so they weren't bad at all. An energy packed expo and great organization. There weren't very many fans along the route which was the one downer of the race. Miles 22-26 rather lonely. But it was a great day and the course does a great job of rolling through a lot of different parts of town. The pacers were great too.

Poor Follow-up

The race course is interesting and the aid stations were plentiful and well stocked. HOWEVER, half-marathon age group awards were 'not availabe' for pick up after the race and 'would be mailed!' FOUR monthes later, two phone calls and two emails - still no age group awards 'in the mail,' or anywhere else. Tacky!!The course does NOT finish on a long downhill - a flat to slight UP-hill is more accurate!

Beautiful, well-organized, medium-sized race

Expo: Very well done Course: Challenging hills, but very pretty Organization: Very well done. I especially appreciate the fact that the expo, the start line, and the finish line were all at the same hotel. That made it easy for us out-of-towners. Weather: Perfect cool temps Lagniappe: The 'Smartpacing' teams were phenomenal. Despite the hills, they helped me get a PR

Hilly, but beautiful scenery.

Ran the half in 2010, and the full in 2011. Organization was great and the water stations were always prepared. I found the best part was the pacers. This was my first 26.2, and the pacer took us out slow for the first few miles, went slow up the hills, but made up time on the downhills.

Not a fast course, but an excellent marathon.

If you are trying for a BQ, but think you might struggle to make it, this is NOT the marathon for you! But if you want a good, honest challenge, this marathon will give it to you. Organisation is excellent. I believe the congestion early in the race is excessive, and could possibly be alleviated by not running the section approaching, hairpin-turning, and then away from the Liberty Memorial. The hills are great - any complaints are coming from wimps.

Overall, a Great Marathon Experience

This was my very first marathon but I've run a couple of halfs and many other large short distance races and the KC Marathon was truely an amazing experience. It is a challenging but fair course with lots of pleasant scenery. The pacers were lots of fun and when I fell of pace the plentiful spectators and awesome volunteers were there every step of the way to keep my spirits up. The aid stations were great, however, they stopped offering vaseline early in the race, so if you think you might need it get it early on the course or use easy glide before you start. The finish approach was a little narrow but still ok. Nice finisher shirt and medal, plenty of traditional runner food at the end. My only complaint for this race was the start. It was really difficult to get in place where I needed to be with my pace group and I didn't hear any kind of instruction from the staging area at Crown Center. This is getting to be a pretty large event and I think assigning corrals or having a staggered start would help alleviate the congestion. October mornings in KC are perfect for distance running. This is a great marathon choice for beginners and elite runners alike.

Fantastic, organized, beautiful

Course: for both the marathon and half marathon, the course is beyond amazing! Hills are a challenge, but they don't kill you, nothing is out and back, and you get do see KC's best features. Varied in hills, flat, residential, city streets, et cetera. Perfect route. Organization: I have never had an issue with organization, the chute, finish line, bag check, expo, et al. The most stress-free run; I keep going back. Spectators: Having run both the half and the full for KC, the full has better crowd support, but it's good either run. Anticipate ample hi-fives, children, passer-byes, families to cheer you on through either route and along the whole course! If I could only run one city, I'd run KC.

Great Signs But NO ELVIS!!!

I just have a few comments about this years race, the support from the fans was tremendous with some very funny uplifting signs. However this was the first marathon I ran without an Elvis impersonator present. We were told the course was going to be hilly...it was! Host hotel was great and a very inviting community.

Moved to suburban KC, KS a year ago so decided to run the biggest 'local' race. It was nice to run by so many landmarks but not sure that would mean much to people unfamiliar with the area. The course is hilly. Start is chaotic; need to stagger half and full marathoners (at least 5K'ers were culled from the pool, starting 15 minutes later). Timing was by Ultramax and they did their usual outstanding job. Have never received results faster. Post-race food extremely disappointing: yogurt, fruit, tiny bags of pretzels or peanuts, and dry/plain bread rolls. I realize a lot of runners ARE nutrition Nazis but some of us run TO eat. Had run the Wichita marathon 6 days earlier and much better chow there. Thankfully, there was a Panera adjacent to the race staging area here that we (and a lot of other runners) hit. Orange scones never tasted so good. If you don't stay on site, carry a $5 bill in your race belt. Expo is ok. Some vendors gave stuff away (lip balm, pens, stress balls) which helped make up for the absolute lack of swag in the 'virtual' goodie bag. Seriously, they email you some coupons beforehand and that's your swag. At check in, you get a white cotton, forgettable T-shirt, bib number, and timing chip. That's it. Ok, safety pins are available, too. The 'pasta dinner' is excellent but do NOT pre-order! They charge $20 through the race organizers but if you just show up at the restaurant, it's less than $10, drink included. And the children's price is even less. It's a buffet at a Crown Center restaurant (5-10 minute walk by skyway from Expo). You can get your Hyatt parking garage ticket validated for eating there, which almost pays for the meal. The organizers claim the dinner is 530-730 but the restaurant keeps it open as long as people show up (we ate at 830). No program, no speakers, you're completely integrated with regular customers... which was fine. My 10 year old signed up to do the 5K at 720 and the Kids' 'Marathon' (1.2 mile after having done 25 in the preceding weeks at home) at 1100. They make it sound like your kid has to sign up well in advance and submit a log for 'verification' but we signed up at the Expo, filled the log out there, and they printed his Certificate on the spot. The post-race food for the kids was even *more* politically correct. Bags of sweet potato chips. Really? The most 'decadent' offering was a mini-box of plain Cheerios. We actually stayed at the Hyatt rather than drive in 25 minutes from home so my son could go back to the room between his 2 races. They had a good rate and it was still available at the last minute (2 days before the race). Hot tub was available til 10 PM and reopened at 530 AM, which was a nice way to relax before and after the race.

Disappointed

This is my third year running in this marathon. Every year there is something wrong organization-wise. This year I ran the half marathon and I finished without a medal. In itself, the fact that they ran out of medals was frustrating. But it doesn't stop there. They don't even have an organized way to deal with this problem. They had some guy gather everyone around a tent and started shouting out directions (without a microphone). He told us to write an email address down on a piece of paper and to email them. As if we all carried pen and paper on us while we ran. After being told many differing stories about why they didn't have medals for everyone on race day, I still have no medal two months later. The course is beautiful and the bands were amazing, but there needs to be some serious revamping of the organization of this race.

NO HALF MARATHON MEDALS

This was my first half marathon, and given that I finished (albeit slowly), I had always had a picture in my head of someone hanging a medal around my neck at the end. This didn't happen, and it really sucked. Otherwise, the crowd support was good, and the pacers were fabulous for the hilly course. The post-race food was a little disorganized, but they did have Boulevard beer, which is excellent.

Recommended run

This was a very nice race - highly recommended. The course was scenic and varied (downtown, posh neighborhood, etc.). Although there were not any signature hills, just about the entire course was composed of slight uphills and downhills. Very little was level. Courses like these are attractive because they don't put much stress on either the quads or hamstrings for long periods. Very good crowd support - very supportive. Water stops were about every 2 miles, which was good because many cups were only 1/3 or 1/4 full, necessitating taking 2 cups or getting water every 2 miles, instead of every 4 miles or so. It was nice to have at least two large hotels within 5 minutes walk from the start and finish. Packet pick-up was easy, but it couldn't hurt for the race sponsors to put a sign outside of the building so that us out-of-towners won't have to guess where to enter. Also, my hotel didn't plan on a pasta buffet; but, after I raised the possibility, it agreed to do so. Another nearby restaurant also had a pasta buffet. Strangely, neither advertised the fact. So, if you are planning on running the race next year, ask the eateries whether they plan to have a buffet. It was great to be in the Midwest again, where everyone from the race volunteers to the hotel staff to the the town folk are friendly and helpful. Great job, Kansas City.

Believe the hills

When they say this course is hilly, believe it. In my opinion, this is not the course you want to try to qualify for Boston on for the first time. It was a nice course in that you get to see the area. Host hotel was nice. Expo workers weren't 100% informed about the events of the weekend. It took a lot of asking to find someone that knew about the pasta dinner. Everyone was very friendly. Pace group leaders were great. Two shirts and a medal for finishers was cool.

AWESOME! Highly recommended!

This was an awesome marathon! Some pretty challenging stretches. If you got to mile 23, it was downhill from there. The crowd was really into it! That being said, there were stretches where there was no music and no one to be seen. No fault to the spectators as far as I can see, but that's why the 4 instead of the 5. I think there were aspects of the course that made it hard to access certain parts, which is why I rated it a 4. The other reason was only due to the fact that there were no periodic clocks for checking your time. I don't like to wear a watch when I race. This made it tough. The pacers were absolutely awesome, so if you stuck to them, you were gold. Expo was awesome. Highly recommend attending informative seminars. They made a big difference. Huge bang for your buck: $80 gets you a t-shirt, a tech-shirt, an awesome medal, and a pretty decent goody bag. Very scenic. Do it. You won't regret it.

Finisher's Medals

They ran out of half marathon medals for hundreds of finishers. Nice course and good support, but not receiving a medal is not the last thing you want runners to remember, especially for those completing their first half, or those from out of town.

Nice Urban Marathon

A very nice urban marathon. KC is a lovely city and the course (while very hilly) showcased all the best areas. Very challenging, but fair and never boring. Glorious fall weather. Enthusiastic spectators. Organization was excellent, except for having to weave in and out of the half marathon walkers the last five miles. Had to dodge numbers of them coming down the final quarter mile straight to the finish line. I won the masters division and the announcer didn't even notice I crossed the line. Small point, but it would have been nice to be acknowledged. Would suggest coning the road off the last five miles to let marathoners pass unimpeded and perhaps have a separate finishing chute. Otherwise a great fall marathon to put on anyone's to-do list.

Very Good Overall

I've only done two marathons, both of them in Kansas City (2009 & 2010). The route is scenic and a bit hilly. The last incline from mile 21 to 23 is a bear. My only gripe concerns the start. The race is getting big enough now that they need to stagger the marathon, half and 5K starts. There's too much jostling for position and wide turns at the start. The extra distance adds up. My Garmin read nearly 26.5 miles at the finish.

Great City; Great Spectators

This is my 8th marathon and my first in Kansas City. Initially, it started out a little rocky. Their packet pick-up was not marked at all. It was in the middle of a hotel (in a ballroom) and neither the hotel nor the ballroom were marked. There were several other events at this time, so locating packet pick-up wasn't the easiest for out of state-ers. The course was good- honest and tough, with good, long, hills. The post-race left much to be desired. As I finished, I received a bottle of water and the only food they had were your typical bananas and apples. Overall, I say it was an average marathon. When you finished, you received a finisher t-shirt. The spectators and volunteers were great, but the overall marathon was so-so.

A very good race

A good event. My first and now favorite marathon. I would have liked to have more volunteers at the aid stations; getting in fluids was a challenge and it turned warm late in the race. The post-race food was minimal at best but the volunteers were awesome. Thanks to the kind army lady who assisted my cramping calve. I'll be back.

Extremely well organized marathon

This was my second marathon. The volunteers were first-rate. The pace leaders did a great job. I can't say enough good things about them. This is a hilly course, especially miles 22 and 23, but the pace leaders did a great job preparing us for getting through it. Overall, this was a great marathon experience.

Nice job - KC!

First, the weather was a bit warm - sunny with little humidity - but that cannot be helped. Perhaps a 7:00 a.m. start would be better. Anyway, these are comments for the "full marathon." Probably the best organized marathon of any marathon that I've run (10 now). It is a medium-sized marathon, which makes things easier (parking, etc.). I love the "loop" course, which prevents bus rides. Great place to start/finish in the middle of Crown Center with plenty of restrooms, food choices (even pre-race), and places to stay inside to keep warm (it was chilly in the morning but warmed up very quickly). We arrived early about 6:15 a.m. to get a parking spot in the Crown Center (shopping center) parking garage, which was very convenient - just a short walk from the finish to the car. The course was well patrolled by the police. No complaints about any facet of the organization (and I'm normally VERY critical of this in most cases). My only complaint would be the long (seemed like 3 miles) hill between 20 and 23. Tough place for such a long hill. The course was pretty urban and had lots to see. KC (contrary to what many might think) is a hilly city and would be difficult to avoid hills in planning a race. Spectator support was decent for a small/medium-sized race. Great job, KC!

Beautiful

As a 50-state marathon wannabe, I came to Kansas City to run its marathon and then drove to Wichita, KS to run its marathon the next day (a 3-hour drive). Although I enjoyed both runs, I regretted not giving myself more time in Kansas City. What a beautiful place (at least what the marathon course shows you!) This was my favorite urban marathon so far. The downtown is very historical and has interesting architecture. Running through neighborhoods of spectacular older homes under a full canopy of fall colors was amazing! And we ran past some great fountains. The hills were fun and the weather was great. I highly recommend this one!

Good race - except for the lame out-and-back

I liked this race and wanted to like it a whole lot more. Great fans, great runners, good vibes, nice scenery, good aid stations, good fan support. However, I will give a BIG wag-of-the-finger to any race that features an out-and-back section. Who wants to see all of those people a couple of miles ahead of you? Doesn't it make you a glutton for punishment for actually seeing those folks who are kicking your butt? Any city one tenth the size of KC can lay out a decent course without this big mistake. Here's to hoping you correct this bogusness, and I'll certainly be back, and recommend your beautiful city and its marathon with gusto!

My 3rd time on this one - always a great race!

I grew up in KC, so I fly back for this one to see my family and hit the roads. Best improvement this year: ladies finisher shirts for the full marathoners! Last year we all got finisher's shirts, which I loved, but the ladies sizes and cut this year were an extra cool surprise! The medal rocks too! Course designer Valdez was out the course again this year - always great to see him out there around mile 22. The course is hilly - but some little tweaks to the design change this year were well done! They've tweaked the course each year I've run it, and it just keeps getting better - great KC tour for natives and visitors. I'll be back next year too!

Great KC Experience!

This was my first time running the KC Marathon. It was a great experience! The course was beautiful, there were plenty of well-stocked waters stops, and best of all, the weather was perfect! There were a couple of demanding hills, but they were early in the race and didn't present a problem. Not a huge number of fans along the course, but enough to keep you going. If you are from out of town like me, stay at the Hyatt or the Westin; they are both a two-minute walk from the start/finish area. The expo was good, not huge. One note for the organizers: make sure ALL of your expo volunteers know details like when the race starts, and where the start line is located. Thanks, KC; I will be back for a future event!

Well organized but challenging course.

There was a pace runner team of two for every five-minute interval, so there is no need to look at your watch or Garmin. You get a cotton T-shirt at the packet pickup and a technical shirt at the finish line. I incorrectly thought I had to register online by the Tuesday before the race, but found out I could have registered at the expo the day before. A first-class marathon, but if you are looking for a PR (personal record), you might want to look elsewhere.

Best Half-Marathon I've Run Yet

Absolutely wonderful experience. I've run around 10 half-marathons and I enjoyed this the most. The course was perfect - several challenging (but fun) hills, but the majority of the race (including the last three miles) was downhill. Volunteers, on-course bands and spectators were all wonderful. While the start was understandably crowded, the wide streets near the beginning allowed the group to spread out fairly easily in the first miles. The location of the start/finish line is perfect since Crown Center provided a great place for runners to keep warm and relax before and after the race. Very convenient parking. I will definitely be back to do this again.

Great Small Marathon

This was my second KC Marathon, and I have to say that I love the course - very scenic. The only downside is the organization of the race. Sometimes they didn't have volunteers positioned and ready to assist you in telling you which direction to go in when coming to an intersection. And sometimes they were not prepared for faster runners at the water/Gatorade stations. There where a couple of times when I wanted Gatorade and they did not have any in cups to serve. This is probably attributed to having a full and half marathon converging around Mile 20 or 21 of the marathon and Mile 8 of the half. I wish the half marathon were on a different course, but understand I that it is virtually impossible. All in all, this is a great marathon event that is growing; and I hope someday it is a 20,000 strong event. Great finisher medal and age-group awards trophy. Also, all marathon finishers receive a tech finisher's t-shirt.

Great Job, KC!!!

This is my second time to run KC's half-marathon. After doing seven of them in other locations, this one is top-notch. The organization, the detail, the crowds, the water stations, the course - all of were GREAT!! I like this year's change in the start/finish area. It is so much better ending it exactly where you started it... and what better place than across from Crown Center!! I also will have to say that this year's shirts were 100% better than last year. The course is awesome - a great way to see the highlights of Kansas City (all of the important touristy areas and monuments). The only thing I was a little disappointed in, it didn't seem like there were as many bands this year as last. But that might be due to the cold drizzly conditions of the morning. Maybe some of them cancelled at the last minute?? Anyhow - GREAT RACE!!

Going to KC

This was my second year running the KC Marathon. I thought the support on the course this year was far superior to last year or the years that I've done the half-marathon. The weather was great, which means a balance between cool weather and race fans. The pacers went on clock time and were right on. It took my group one minute to get to the start, so I would assume clock time would be off for others, but they were right on for chip time. More porta-potties were needed. And I finished in the top 20% of the marathon and they were out of beer when I finished - that's not cool, not cool at all. I would have also liked some warm soup or something warm at the finish, but those are just the little things. I'd do it again and most likely will!

Terrific Race on a Beautiful and Challenging Cours

Kansas City was my fifth marathon. I set a PR by 17 minutes and had a great experience. Course: The course began and ended in Crown Center in 2009 with the start/finish area conveniently located by two large hotels. The course took us to many of KC's highlights, including downtown, Westport, and Country Club Plaza. KC is a hilly town and there is no way for a course designer to avoid hills. The most challenging hills are in the first half, and the one around miles 21-22 didn't seem that bad to me. The last couple miles are downhill and flat. I can't imagine a better course for KC. Organization: I thought that it was great. Packet pick-up was easy, the start went smoothly, and the finish line area was well run and efficient when I got there (around 4:17). They had a variety of food at the finish and plenty of volunteers to help with chip removal and t-shirt and medal distribution (the finishers' medals were really cool, too). It seems like the organizers took comments from previous years' races seriously and worked to make a lot of improvements. Spectators: There were a lot more of them and they were louder than I expected. If you are a KU or - God forbid - an MU alum, you will get a lot of additional support, too! The volunteers on the course were great cheerleaders as well.

What a great marathon

The organization and fan support on this race was great. There were lots of water/Gatorade stops and first aid stops. At many of the aid stations they had fruit, gels, candy, and pretzels. They gave a cotton t-shirt with the race packet, then once you finished the race they gave you a finisher's tech shirt. There were fans cheering along the entire course. The course did have some tough hills, but it was a very pretty course and it was a true closed course as well, which is nice. The medal was very good-looking. The only negative to the race was that the marathon was started with the half-marathon and 5K, which did make it a little congested at the start. Overall, a race that I would definitely recommend.

Beautiful course, great support and organization!

This was my first marathon and it was an awesome experience. The expo was great. There were enough vendors that it was interesting but it wasn't overly crowded. Packet pick up was a cinch and the start location in Crown Center is great for parking. The race itself was very well done. The course is absolutely beautiful. You get to see many of the historic sites and beautiful neighborhoods of Kansas City. There were four major hills on the course but the two toughest are in the first four miles. The hills keep the course interesting, and they are challenging but fair. I ran with the 4:00 pace group and Jim and Al put us right on pace and helped me to finish in under four hours in my first marathon. Thanks, guys; I couldn't have done it without you! There was plenty of water and Gatorade throughout the course. Overall, this is a very well run marathon and I would recommend it to anyone.

Great marathon, nice downhill finish

This is the second time I have run Kansas City, and the finish area is much improved with the new location. I love the course layout, with a good mix of hills and flat areas and the most difficult hills in the first half of the course. I'm not sure why the 5K race started at the same time as the half and full marathons this year; it seemed odd to have these faster-paced runners bobbing and weaving amongst the longer distance runners. I would like to see the 5K go back to a later start like they did last year. Also, that would help alleviate congestion getting into the parking ramps and lines for the porta-potties. I loved the fact that Waddell & Reed gives both an entrant's cotton T-shirt and a technical finisher's shirt - plus a cool medal. I like that the finisher's medal for the full marathon is of a different KC fountain each year. This event is first-class all the way!

Great marathon from start to finish. Plenty of water stops and friendly volunteers. I loved the start and finish being in the same place. Great Mid-Size Marathon

The course takes you to all the landmarks and scenic views that KC has to offer. The organization was top-notch, and the volunteers were very helpful. I've run over 15 marathons and this is a well-kept secret. The course was hilly and rolling, but downhill from miles 24-26. Course, organization (email updates frequently before the race), expo, and volunteers were top-notch EXCEPT for the mile marker on 20. Other than that, it is a minor detail, but nothing is perfect and this is by far one of the best marathons I ran on. I ran this on Saturday with a 3:05 so I could be a bit biased. ;) Thank you, Kansas City!

Great First Race

Overall, this was a great first race. The course was fantastic, featuring some challenging hills and hitting all of the hot spots of the city. The crowd support was also excellent (I loved all of the live bands). My one complaint: the finish line. I finished in under four hours, but most of the vendors had packed up and left (including the free beer :( ). From reading older comments, it looks like this has been a problem in previous years, but organizers have done little to correct this. Despite that, I would recommend this race to anyone, and I am looking forward to next year!

Wonderful!

This was my first marathon, and the hills were definitely challenging (as others mentioned), but the course was nicely designed, so that the last several miles were flat or downhill. I also know that they have changed the course design from previous years, so that the start and finish are both at Crown Center. There's beautiful scenery and a very friendly atmosphere from the spectators, the volunteers, and the other runners!

Great race

My first marathon and I thought it was amazing. Gatorade and water stations about every two miles or so, along with GU packets, gummy bears and Vaseline being handed out. Port-a-potties about every five miles - close enough that you didn't have to hold it for very long. Spectators were at least every 800 meters, and I always had at least five or six runners around me. Few bands out; there probably would have been more, but it was threatening rain the whole time. Start/finish line at Crown Center, which was nice. I only wish there were more bands and fewer turns. Course was rolling hills the whole way, but with only one really tough hill. It was a hard course, but not impossible. I plan to run this again!

Great course.

With over 10,000 participants between the different races this year, this has turned into a pretty big race. I ran the half this year after doing a relay segment last year. Pros: 1. Just a fantastic course, comprising some of the very best sights of Kansas City. High points were running up to the Liberty Memorial, running through Westport, and particularly turning the corner into the Country Club Plaza where the street was lined with very enthusiastic supporters. 2. The race finish, near the start at Crown Center was so much better than last year, where the Freighthouse District was cramped and inconvenient. It really had a "big race" feel as you approached the finish line too, with very vocal support coming in. Well organized finish, with plenty of room. 3. I found it surprisingly fast. Yes, there are plenty of hills and yes, some are challenging, but what goes up must come down. I set a race PR, so as long as you treat the uphills with respect and the downhills with none, you can achieve a decent time. Make sure you train for them though, or you'll struggle. 4. Free beer at the end! Enough said. 5. T-shirt was way better than last year. 6. Probably one of the best races to do if you're planning on joining a pace team. Both the number available and their actual race strategies were absolutely top notch. Cons: 1. I think the main tweak could be to do at least a partially staggered start. The race is big enough now to where you could legitimately do this. All paces and races mixed together led to a very chaotic first few miles, and the walkers were genuine hazards. 2. The packets (aside from the t-shirt) were weak this year. Overall, a terrific course with an increasingly big-race atmosphere. Highly recommended.

Can we do this one twice a year?

This is my first time running KC and my third marathon overall - and it was my favorite so far. Beautiful course, tons of volunteers (thank you!), and spectators all along the way. Also, I really feel like I got the most for my entrance fee in this race - I had the streets of KC shut down for me, and I got two shirts out of the deal, as well as a big, honkin' medal. It was a lot of fun and I will definitely be back; I just have to train better for the hills because, man, my butt is KILLING me today! - Ben

Scenic run around KC

I enjoyed the course layout and I thought they did a pretty good job of showcasing the city. Even though it was a cold overcast day, there were several spectators cheering runners on. There was a variety of food at the finish (bananas, bread rolls, yogurt, etc.). Good, high-tech finisher shirt, and a big, colorful medal. Having text messages automatically sent to friends on my progress every time my chip crossed a timing mat was way cool! Kudos to whoever came up with that idea. Issues: 1. Start is crowded enough without adding 5K runners to it. Why not have them later, like the Kids' Run? 2. More porta-potties on the course. 3. Race started 10 minutes late.

This was my first marathon and I certainly learned a lot from it. There were a lot of hills that I really didn't plan for, and running up and downhill made for a really good blister from sliding back and forth in my shoes. But really, the biggest thing was having the runners from the shorter races out there at the exact same time. It really just played with me mentally. I was so happy when we got to the halfway point and thought I would be just running around the same people, but then the relay guys were jumping in. Watching people pass me that looked so fresh and froggy just made me feel horrible. So in the end, my next marathon will be with marathoners only, like Chicago. I would never do Kansas City again.

Quality event on challenging course

I had avoided this race in the past because of the negative reviews it'd received here on MarathonGuide.com. But those reviews turned favorable over the last couple years, so I decided to use Kansas City as my Missouri entry toward my quest for 50 states. It turned out to be a good decision. Probably the best thing about race weekend was the Crown Center. This is where the race starts and finishes, and where the host hotel and pre-race expo is located. It's also a conglomerate of downtown restaurants and shops. All of it was connected by a climate-controlled skywalk. It was super convenient given the rain and cold temperatures. And the Crown Center shops were the perfect place to get a coffee and recuperate after the race. Race temps were cool - oddly, it felt perfect at the start, but the temperature began falling shortly thereafter. I was sweating for the first half of the marathon, and then trying to keep my fingers from freezing the second half. But shorts and a long-sleeve shirt turned out to be a good choice - just should have held on to my gloves longer. I feel like the hills along this course aren't given the respect they deserve. This is a legitimately hilly course. Don't go expecting gentle slopes. And it seemed as though we were running uphill most of the race. That's odd for loop course, but it felt like we were mostly climbing for the first 23 miles, and then gave back all that elevation quickly in a short, steep hill around 24 miles. That being said, I enjoyed the course (though I would stop well short of calling it "beautiful," like some others have). It took everything I had to run a good (for me) time, so there was a great sense of accomplishment at the finish. The crowd support along the route was steady. Thanks go out to all the volunteers and to the police officers who performed traffic control. For the life of me, though, I can't figure out why race directors don't require volunteers to wear plastic gloves when handing out water at aid stations - or at least instruct them to hold the sides of the cups rather than dipping their fingers into the drink. I moan about it all the time, but maybe I'm the only one who's bothered by it. My one other complaint... it looked like some short-distance runners (half-marathoners, 5K'ers, relayers) were bringing their extended families into the finish chute to partake of the post-race food. That's a low-class move, but it also didn't look good for the KC Marathon staff for letting them do it. But Kansas City should be happy to have this race. It's well done, and shows the city in a good light. Regional runners and 50 Staters alike should be thankful to have such a quality marathon option in Missouri.

Great race, highlighting the best of Kansas City!

This marathon was great and my favorite ever! The course covered all of the highlights of Kansas City, and was very scenic. We were given a shirt both before the race, and after completing it - and both were great. The finisher's medal was awesome as well. The course is a bit hilly in the first half - I suggest walking up the steepest parts if you're not a fast marathoner. I saw people running uphill at the beginning, and walking downhill in the last six miles. The pacers for times around 4:50 and later finished late, so don't rely on them. My time was a few seconds under 4:50, and that pace group came in at least five minutes after me. More port-a-potties are needed - the lines during the race were insane. The aid stations were great. Overall, I would recommend this marathon! I've run all three of the local ones and this is by far the best!

Fantastic race, KC

I had run the half a couple of times since Eladio had redesigned this course. However, this was my first time around the new marathon course. What a fantastic course! It truly showcases some of the KC's most scenic vistas and interesting neighborhoods. We also had the added treat this year to benefit from perfect temps, nice cloud-cover, and the fall colors just starting to turn. I expected it to be hilly, but would consider it to be a mostly rolling with a couple of good grinders to keep it interesting. The bands along the way were awesome, the aid stations were well-manned with plenty of fluids, gels and candy, and the spectators were fantastic. The packet pickup was well-organized, with a nice-sized expo. My hat is off to you, Eladio. You've created a course that KC can be so proud of. As a 50-stater, I would take this race head to head with any other I've done.

Outstanding organization and excellent course!

I ran the Kansas City Marathon several years ago, and I am amazed at the improvements made since then. The race director certainly knows what all types of runners are looking for in a marathon. Although the course was rather hilly, the hills were mixed in with some great flat stretches. My spectators were able to get around to support me every four miles, and the text message runner updates were great. The written directions with details of terrain and mile marker information on the website were really helpful! Aid stations were wonderful (GU, M&M's, gummy bears, water, Gatorade, and Vaseline were at just about every aid station!) and there was more crowd support than I thought there would be. To top it all off, I got a great view of the city!

AWESOME mid-size race!

I am just getting back into running marathons after not running one since Chicago in 2000. This is a spectacular race. The course was beautiful. I had a PR and I am nine years older than I was for my last marathon. I owe this to the awesome 4:30 pace team! I love that they have pace teams for every five-minute increment. This race was MUCH more fun than Chicago. I will do it again.

Surprisingly Hilly

I ran this marathon 3 times (2006, 2007, 2008). It is my hometown marathon. In past years, the finish has been in the crossroads, which, other than on the first Friday of every month, is boring. The course showcases the best of Kansas City, however, and is fun to run. I would recommend this marathon to anyone.

Awesome

Great way to see the Kansas City that I left so many many years ago! Scenery of KC was great. Only complaint would have been the finish area. They seem to be just completing that area and it was WAY too far from the start line - with no transportation back. Also, most of the spectators and most of the people involved were just awesome, offering typical Kansas City friendliness. Need to remember, though, that for some of us, a half is as hard as a full is for other people. Please treat us with the respect and consideration shown to those who finish the full also. A full marathoner might not agree with me, but the fees from the people completing the half also help the event, and those of us completing the half work very hard to finish that. Not everybody has the stamina to complete a full marathon. Having different medals, etc., is fine, but denying somebody a "space blanket" because they didn't complete the full is not nice.

Great, scenic, half-marathon course!!

This was my first time to run the KC Half Marathon and I was thoroughly impressed with the race from start to finish!! The course was very scenic, the weather was perfect, and the support staff were outstanding! My only real critique is that the finish area could be in a much better location. Finishers were crammed into a relatively small area and it was tough to find family and friends at the finish. All in all, though, I highly recommend this race and will be back again next year!

great marathon in a great city

Thank you to Kansas City for a great marathon. I am a Kansas City native, but living in Dallas. Everything about the marathon was special, from the expo to the marathon. The course was beautiful; it was quite hilly, but seeing the sights of Kansas City made it even more special. I will run it again and would highly recommend this marathon to anyone. Great medal and finisher shirt - thank you, Kansas City, for the very special marathon. Two wonderful things happened that weekend. I got married to my wonderful wife and ran this marathon. I love you, Kansas City!

A challenging course but fun to run

I really enjoyed this course. It is has a few spots with legitimate hills to conquer, but overall it is very reasonable. You definitely feel that you have earned your nice and flat/down-sloping final 1-2 miles. The fans were a little thin at times but loud and very supportive. I loved the post-race party: Great blues music, plenty to eat, and delicious local brews. I just really enjoyed the whole event. The expo was pretty lean, however.

Beautiful Course - Finish Area Needs Work

The Kansas City Marathon is a beautiful urban race. It showcases the city and has a few challenging hills (but nothing too bad) - and the picture perfect race day was icing on the cake. The aid stations were stocked, there were plenty of port-a-johns, and the volunteers and traffic control were terrific. My only complaint is similar to others already posted; the finish area was out of just about everything when I finished. There were oranges, bananas, yogurt, and water. The Smoothie King vendor was, apparently, the only one who was able to anticipate the number of finishers. (The smoothies were great!) I've run many marathons and one of the biggest disappointments about races that combine 5K, half, and full marathons is when the organizers do nothing to stop the shorter distance runners from descending on the finish line food like locusts, leaving little or nothing for the runners who paid the most and ran the farthest. I hope the organizers recognize and correct this deficiency to make the Kansas City Marathon a top-notch experience for everyone, even the marathon runners!

great event!!

This was my 4th half marathon, and it was well put together and well organized. A great race: tons of bands, and tons of scenic things to look at while running through the city. The crowd support was awesome, and so were the water stops. The hills were challenging, but they weren't as bad as I thought they would be. The only thing I would suggest is: it was VERY crowded and congested at the end of the race. Perhaps the food tables need to be moved on down, farther away from the finish line. Otherwise, it was a great race and I would highly recommend this to anyone!!

A great race.

This was my first marathon, but I think it will be hard to top this one. This race has it all. The course was beautiful and the hills from miles 20-23 challenged you a bit. The volunteers were amazing, as was the medal and finisher's shirt. The bands and spectators were awesome. I will definitely be back next year to run this race again.

Challenging Course. Good Marathon.

First, this is a challenging course. There is very little in the way of flat areas. It consists of rolling up- and downhill sections. The uphill section from mile 20-23 is tough. However, having said that, it's also a very scenic and pleasant course. It really showcases what KC has to offer. I have run eight marathons and many half marathons. The organization was very good and rivals the best of the bunch. From the expo to the start and finish areas, I have no complaints. All were very well done. There was a good selection of post-race goodies available. They gave out a finisher's technical shirt, which was nice treat. The pace teams were great! They employed a slightly slower start pace to warm up and then settled in to an even pace. The leaders were very encouraging and knowledgeable and knew what to expect on the course. This is far better than the average marathon, with some runners carrying a sign. The crowd support was okay, on par with smaller marathons I've run. Those that were there were very vocal. Overall, a very good experience. I would recommend this race to anyone. It may not be your fastest race, but it will probably be a lot of fun. Give this marathon a try!

Awesome Race!!!

This was my first marathon, and I have run two half-marathons earlier this year. I have to say that it was an awesome experience! I heard it was a hilly course, but it didn't really bother me that much. I trained on some hills over in St. Louis. Overall, the organization was great. The expo was huge and the pasta party had some great food. Just thinking about it is making me hungry again. On the course everything was very well plotted out. They had water and Gatorade at least every two miles if not more. The crowd was great too. I've only been to KC once before, so it was fun experiencing the city throughout the run. I don't really have any other marathons to compare it too, but based off of my half-marathons, this one was way better. I have to say thanks to everyone in KC for getting me hooked. This was my first marathon but it definitely will not be my last.

I'd do it again

This race was only my second half marathon and I loved it! Everything was great; from the "pep talk" from Dick Beardsley to post-race festivities, I'd not hesitate to do this one again. The course was challenging, but fair. Miles 2-4 would make you want to cry for your mama, though! Having a pace team for the half was awesome. My pace leader, Ellen, was great. So upbeat and talkative. If not for 2 horrible calf cramps that I got around mile 12, I would have finished with her. I hope other races decide to add pace teams for half runners.

Beautiful Challenging Course

This was my first marathon, so I don't have a lot to compare it to other than other half-marathons and shorter races. The course had many hills but they were mostly early on in the race. The course itself took you by many fountains and pretty parts of KC. There were many people cheering in the beginning and less towards the end. The bands also were front-heavy and disappeared near the end. I thought that actually the start of the race was Kansas City's asset and the finish was disappointing. They didn't even call my name out at the finish but rather called everyone around me. They also stated in race literature that there would be a "Runner's Food Court" that only consisted of bananas and oranges by the time I made it through (which was still under 5 hours). They also had an "after party" advertised that started late and was extremely disorganized. It also promised entertainment and food, and neither were present. The finisher shirt and medal were great! Overall, a great race but the finish line could be much improved.

Just OK...

This was my first marathon in KC (actually the relay) and I have to say that while the course was beautiful and the weather was nice, I was very disappointed in certain aspects of the organization and support during and particularly after the race. On the plus side, the transportation to/from the relay stations was very good, although I was surprised by a lack of water/aid stations at those relay points. The main issue that I had was that I have honestly never felt like I didn't get enough food/drink during or after a race until this one. Our team finished in 4:20 and there was virtually nothing in terms of food (e.g., bananas and a few bagel bites) and absolutely no Gatorade/PowerAde or other electrolyte drinks at the finish line. I was shocked to see that there were actually food vendors charging $5-10 for food at the finish line! That has never ever been my experience with a race, whether it be a 5K or a full marathon. In addition, I felt that the maze of railings at the finish line was very confusing and hard to maneuver. The support on the course was quite good at some stations, but very spotty in others (at some key points around mile 10-13) with sometimes only 1 or 2 people manning the tables. I think I may try to run this race again individually, but I am somewhat wary considering that the registration fees are similar to other races (on the same weekend) that traditionally have better support.

Tough course

There were some good and some bad about this marathon. The weather could not have been better. It was the perfect temp for running! There were not a lot of spectators along the course, but the people that were cheering were wonderful! The volunteers were great too. At the finish, there was not much food there - just oranges, bananas, and cookies. It would have been nice to have a little more to eat. Also, the beer was gone by the time I realized that there was beer. There was a band in the finish area. It was so loud that my family and I tried to move a few times before we gave up and left. No one seemed to stick around and it is probably because it was so loud, no one could relax - it was terrible. So I left with a headache and an empty stomach. I found the course to be tough, but that was not a surprise. There were a few areas that we ran through that were not very nice and seemed run down - it was towards the end, so I may have just been rundown. There are a lot of fountains though!! I will not be back to this marathon. But if you want a no-frills, semi-challenging marathon, this one may be for you.

From expo to post-race party, terrific!

Expo: Packet pickup was a breeze. They had adorable souvenir shirts and other fun merchandise available, with better designs and selection than some of the 15-50K races out there! (When I'm running a full, I like to buy shirts to document it!) Lots of great vendors there. The course designer Eladio Valdez was presenting at the expo too! He gave a great walk through of the course, and explained the logic in where he placed the hills. Although I knew this was a hilly course from running the half last year, knowing why the hills come when they do was a great mental break and discussion point in my pace group while we were running them. This marathon is the absolute perfect size. About 1,300 run the full, so you're never running alone, but sure don't have to dodge other folks either. Start was well organized - signs for both pace groups and minute/mile goals helped folks line up. I was back behind the 11:00's, so no clue if this worked as intended for the folks up front, but it only took me 4 minutes to cross the start line - compared to over 20 in some less-well-organized (and only slightly larger) races I've run. The course itself is really pretty. The hills they warn you about are for real. But, you're always somewhere pretty (and the couple times you're not, you will be again in under a mile; there are no long stretches of industrial areas, as can easily happen in urban courses). On-course support was fabulous. All water stops had promised Gatorade and water, and there were oranges, gummy bears and more along the way. The volunteer and spectator support was AMAZING! I don't expect to see many folks on a small race (especially once the half splits from the full), but there were far more than I would have guessed, and they were quite enthusiastic. Even the neighborhoods we ran through were a great surprise - lots of residents were out on their porches and driveways to watch! All of the bands kept things entertaining too. The course-cutting problems from last year seemed to be eliminated. A slight course redesign eliminated the cheaters opportunity from last year, and volunteers were checking badges at the one very short out and back that would have presented an opportunity to cut. That and a chip mat sure seemed to do the trick from what I saw. Great changes there. Also had some folks calling splits at some of the mile markers, so you could check your watch time with the official course time. Nice touch. And a fun aside: the course designer was out on the course as he'd promised he would be at the expo speech! He said he'd be out cheering us on at mile 24ish, and when I ran by he was still there with high-fives! Even at my non-front-of-pack pace. ...Which leads to a shout out for Kirk - the 5:00 pacer. He was wonderful. Kept the pace honest, and was a great leader. I ran with him for 25 miles, and then his motivation got me to run ahead for the last mile and finish with a strong PR! Finally, the post-race area. This has to be my favorite part! First, as noted above, I'm not that fast. Finished well ahead of course-close time frame (6 hours) but still, 5 hrs has seen the bulk of finishers come and go. I was just hoping they had some food left. Well, as I turned the corner for the downhill stretch to the finish, I heard cheering! The announcer called out my name and home state as I ran down the stretch - I couldn't believe how many folks were still out on the sidelines cheering the finishers! I got my absolutely fabulous enameled medal and moisture-wicking finisher's shirt! It says, "FINISHER" in huge capital letters on the back, along with the marathon logo, etc. It's totally worth running for! (I saw all the full finishers get these last year when I was running the half, and it was a huge reason I wanted to run the full here this year). The sponsors were all still out with goodies, the food was still well supplied, and the band was still playing! I think this is the first full marathon I've finished where the party was still really rocking by the time us less-speedy finishers got to the finish line, and I can't tell you how much I appreciated it! Just a real top-notch act across the board! The only possible change I would suggest is more porta-potties! They had the exact number zand location of each porta-potty stop on their website, which was great, but one time I needed to go a couple miles before the next stop and ended up detouring to a Winsted's. ;) As a side note, my family ran the 4-person marathon relay, and from all reports on that front, that was also a great event! None of them are very serious runners; they just did it because I convinced them it would be fun, and at the end, they said it actually was! And also, they got great marathon-relay finisher medals. The transition points for the relay were fun - huge balloon finish lines for each leg. The family said it was a great event and they were glad that they did it. Really high praise from folks who really only signed up to humor me!

Excellent, well-run race!

I was in town for business, and since I am training for a December marathon, I decided to run the KC Half Marathon as a training run. I have run many half marathons and marathons, and I cannot say enough about the quality of this race. The race started at 7 a.m., which is still dark in KC. We got to run through downtown as the sun rose over the city. The course was scenic and gave a great tour of a neat city. There were bands along the way, including a classical ensemble right outside the symphony hall. Yes, there were gradual hills but they were mostly near the beginning, nothing killer - and the last 5K is all downhill for both the marathon and half marathon making for a fast finish. I thought the race a bit expensive at first, but considering that for $60 I received a race entry, course support (including coffee at the start), pace team, T-shirt, medal, $25 gift card to Jack Stack BBQ, finisher's breakfast, three pints of Boulevard, and numerous other goodies at the expo, I think I came out actually ahead! The marathon is a small additional charge but they also receive a special marathon finisher's shirt. I am not sure if I can make it out for next year but I would encourage all Midwestern runners or anyone looking for a road trip to take advantage of this excellent race. Well done, Kansas City!

I'm proud of my city.

I am 25 and this is my third marathon. I ran Twin Cities in 2007 and Boston in 2008. I decided I needed to run my hometown marathon. It's hard to say it's on par with Boston because Boston's Boston, but this race is definitely starting to compete with some of our country's bigger marathons. The course was very fair and offered all the sites and sounds that KC has to offer. You'll see Crown Center, Union Station, our new downtown arena the Sprint Center, the Liberty Memorial, the Country Club Plaza, the historic 18th & Vine jazz district, and some of the most beautiful neighborhoods with giant old homes. There are bands all along the course (not so much after we broke from the 1/2 marathon course but picked up again when we rejoined) playing everything from Otis Redding to the Killers. I've run in some races that tried to do the band thing and a lot of them sucked. These bands were excellent. The first 1/2 of the marathon course has two series of pretty good hills. The second 1/2 includes a lot of flat and downhill running and about 2 miles (around mile 21-23) of gradual uphill. There were water/Gatorade stations every 1.5-2 miles and GU at miles 12 and one other mile marker later in the course. On top of that someone ordered up temperatures that ranged from 42-50 degrees during the race with bright sun and light winds. Obviously that enhances the experience (weather is a gamble in KC and we lucked out this year). The spectators that were on the course were fantastic, but I must say there were some areas that got pretty lonely. The KC Marathon is growing and now I see why. I really am proud to be a runner from KC and hope that people will consider this marathon when looking to run a race in the Midwest.

Great race; would do it again.

Great and slightly challenging course with the hills. The out-and-back portion around miles 18-22 was a challenge at that part of the race - and the most boring part of the race. For those commenting on the sparse spectators, you have obviously never run a SMALL marathon. There were always spectators within cheering distance, and the names on the bibs allowed the spectators to cheer you on as if they knew you by calling you by name (GREAT touch). Except for that one stretch, the route was scenic and fun. I really liked the last two miles (flat to slightly downhill). I had determined I would probably not run another marathon after Kansas City, but I will be back for this one. GREAT experience. Great race. I hope it does not grew too big, but with such a well done job, I can see it growing quite a bit.

Wonderful Race!

Ran the 1/2 marathon - it was so well done! Plenty of water stops, and they even had wet sponges, candies and PowerBars at the later mile marks. The medal was really nice quality too - cool! Mile 2 is a hard uphill run, but they warned us it was a hilly course. Very well organized, and wonderful volunteers - will be back next year!

Great race - keep up the good work

I was in K.C. visiting my daughter a few days before driving to K.C. I noted that your race would be on when I was there and I could not stay away. I have done 20 marathons and 14 half marathons. Yours was well organized and run. The shirt for the half was a little disappointing but the other marathon gear was first-class. The course was challenging but scenic, the weather cooperated, and the race workers were excellent. I did miss having more spectators - maybe that will come with time. Unfortunately I was not able to stay around for the awards (I think I was second in my age, 60-65 for the half). Not sure if there was some award involved.... Will this be mailed to me? I have spread the word back in chilly Wisconsin about your race!!!

Who hands out water in their underwear?

What a great route. The neighborhoods we ran through were scenic and well shaded. Aid stations were stocked and volunteers friendly - sometimes a little too friendly. Guys handing out water in their underwear at mile 13 were a little weird. My only complaint was that there weren't any clocks to gauge how you were doing. I was only able to keep pace by watching for the pace groups. Oh, and that long out-and-back in the second half was cruel. I've never been so tempted to cheat and cross the road. Otherwise, this was a great race.

What a great time!

I loved this race! It was my 2nd full marathon and I ran the half here last year. The volunteers were amazing! They were everywhere! I tore a muscle in my quad around the 11 and was determined to finish anyway. It was painful but a volunteer gave me a couple Advil at an aid station, which helped tremendously! There were tons of porta-potties along the course, which was also great. Also, to the other marathoners, I know it's like this at most races, but I loved the support from everyone running! Overall, a very well set up race! I was very impressed!

My favorite marathon!

This was an outstanding race!! Very well organized. Beautiful course along the wide streets of the city with a few manageable hills. There were very lively spectators at the aid stations and cheering on the course. The biggest hill of the course is near the beginning and takes you up to Liberty Memorial, which was lovely at sunrise. The aid stations and finish line were well stocked. I have run many others - and even the Kansas City Marathon 5 years ago. This revamped event is a must as far as urban courses go!

KC is first-class...

I have run marathons all over the country and overseas and can say that KC is one of my favorites. The organization is outstanding. Although the spectators are sparse, they make up for it with enthusiasm. KC is the fastest-growing marathon in the country for a reason - they have their act together. Love the medal. Love the post-race atmosphere. Loved everything.

Very pretty city!

Who knew KC was such a pretty city? Loved all the fountains, views, pretty homes, etc. Hardly any spectators, but plenty of volunteers at EVERY side street calling out to the runners, and the aid station folks were great too! Need a chip mat at the long out-and-back to stop cheaters like the girl dressed as Dorothy who crossed over the road to join her friend. Funny - she was greeted at the end by people with flowers, etc. Must have been her first and she CHEATED!

Fantastic marathon, can't wait until next year.

It was only my second marathon and this one I was running on my own. the beautiful course and sparse but terrific spectators kept me feeling relaxed and occupied the whole way. Hills were nothing like I had anticipated but enough to make it interesting. the finish was the best. loved the finishers shirt, and what a beautiful medal. Great job KC.

experience of a lifetime

This was my first marathon so I didn't know what to expect. I feel that everything and more was provided for me so I could feel confident in my performance. The water, Gatorade, fruit, and snacks were provided throughout the race at just the right times for people to replenish electrolytes and fluids. I never felt thirsty between water stops because I took advantage of what was provided at each stop. The race was tough but the scenery was beautiful and the weather was perfect. The hills were at the beginning of the race so this made it easier to finish at the end. I was so pleased about how I was greeted at the end of the race with tents of food, beer, and spectators. The event planners really made the runner feel special. This was such an exciting experience.

Excellent Race

I thought that this race, from the expo to the finish line, was top-notch. The course was scenic and challenging, and the staff and volunteers were attentive and knowledgeable. Nice work!

Best in Missouri

I'm by no means an expert, but I've done the St. Louis Marathon, Lewis and Clark Marathon, and now Kansas City - and I really think Kansas City was my favorite! The course takes you through gorgeous parts of the city, and the scenery is beautiful. Everything was very well organized. The morning of the race was flawless. Parking was easy. There was no traffic. Getting to the start was a piece of cake. Pace groups were very well organized. Water and Gatorade every two miles. There were even fruit and snacks at some of the stops, which was perfect! And the boulevard at the finish line made it all worth while. All in all, my favorite marathon in Missouri.

You know you did something.

This is my 2nd full and I have ran 3 half's. I thought it was organized very well. The race started exactly on time. Plenty of water & Gatorade. Start was organized by expected pace. There was elbow room along the way. Hills were challenging but not impossible. Three main hills at 2, 8, and 21. Cheering spectators most of the way. Free beer at the end to replenish carbs. It was long, it hurt, I did not have to worry about anything, but me along the way. What more could you ask for? It was a marathon. If it was easy, everyone would do it. ; )

Basically postive but with 2 complaints.

I enjoyed the race. The course was challenging but very scenic so there was always something to look at to take your mind off (briefly) all the hills. The race shirts, finisher's shirt and medal are all top notch. Water stops had plenty of water & sport's drink and lots of gu was handed out. I would have liked to have had a couple more of the water stops. My main complaint is the lack of crowd control at the finish line. I had to yell at the one of the spectators to get out of my way,as I was trying to run to the finish line. A tired runner should not have to run through a maze to get to the finish line.

Great Challenge

Beautiful city and was well organized. It started on time, water and aid stations were plenty, volunteers were nice, good support, and nice finishers t-shirt and medal. Run this course if you want a challenging hill experience...felt like we were ascending for the majority of the run. Overall, good experience.

I loved it!

I ran the half and am recommending it to all my running friends for next year. Everything about the race was great - even the weather (which I know you have no control over). I lived in KC in the late 60's and for me the course was scenic (and nostalgic). And the hills weren't as bad as I thought they'd be. The race really showed off the best of KC. Thanks.... I had a great time!

What a great marathon!

Loved this marathon! KC is a beautiful, unexpectedly elegant city, and we ran through the incredibly gorgeous parks, monuments, and neighborhoods. I was so proud to show off the city to my fellow runners. Wonderful perks: 2 t-shirts, one of them a technical finisher shirt; my first name printed above my race number, so that everyone cheered me personally; and a $25 gift certificate to Jack Stack barbecue, (which we used Saturday after the marathon for a late lunch). The weather was perfect, and the organizers were smart to start at 7 am. Because of the early start, before sunrise, we ran in the shade until the sun came above the buildings 3 hours later. Even then, shade trees and buildings shadowed much of the course. It's got a couple of hills at the beginning (remember, the Hospital Hill Run is held here it's not in Kansas, and it's not flat). If you don't train for them, they could bother you. Also, miles 21-23 were hilly, but the relatively flat ending was terrific. Because they've had difficulties other years (including holding it too early in the fall, so that the weather was hot, and accidentally cutting the course short), I've been worried about trying it. But all problems have been worked out, and I would enthusiastically recommend this to all!

Great Race!

This is everything I heard it was going to be. Tough, but fun as well. The course was a little hilly, but it is the Midwest. Each hill had an aid station at the bottom. The people holding traffic were great cheerleaders as well. Very well organized and plenty of treats at the aid station. They did add aid stations due to the warmer fall weather this year. Great example of the great care.

Respect the Hills :)

Overall, the race was really well done. The aid stations were well manned with friendly volunteers and (despite a warning in my race packet) everyone I saw got a medal and a tech shirt at the end. I did not train for hills (I live in flat, flat Wichita, Kansas) and I pretty much got what I deserved. While this race isn't impossible by any means, make sure you train for the terrain to avoid my bonking experience! I went out slow to try to conserve my energy but I ran this course 20 minutes slower than normal. I think that is because I used all my energy on the hills through mile 9. I thought the slower pace would save me and I'd be ready to pick it up at about 18-19... but not so much. Run this race if you want a challenge, want to feel good about your accomplishment and want to see the highlights of a really lovely city.

Great showcase of Kansas City

I ran the half. The course is a good sampling of KC's sights. Running across the country Club Plaza into the morning sun was especially beautiful. I also appreciate that the course spans our racial divide; it would've been easy to keep it all on the "white side of town." It's good to show folks that there's beauty in all parts of the city. It was great going through the 18th and Vine District, where a smoking hot blues band was playing. I wish they could somehow work in Cliff Drive, which is a real gem for our city. But I can understand why - it's a little detached from the other sights in the city. I'm a little disappointed by the lack of fan support. I'd like to see the city get more behind it. Perhaps the co-sponsor Kansas City Star could rally folks a little more.

Great Marathon

Well organized, great volunteers, beautiful course. The weekend started with the expo where some enthusiastic sponsors made us feel welcome. The Spaghetti dinner was very good. Parking was free at the expo and free for the marathon as well. The race starts and finishes in downtown Kansas City. They have a 1/2 marathon and marathon that start together and a 5k that starts 15 minutes later. Most runners were running the 1/2 so things thinned out after the split. The race started on time, plenty of porta pots at the start line. We waited no more than 10 minutes. The course is hilly and the day was warm but they had plenty of water, gatorade and food on the course. A nice touch was the wet (& cold) paper towels handed out at mile 18, sponges at 23, ice at 25. The finish area had plenty of food. I should note that I finished in over 5 hours and they had plenty of everything at all stops and the finish area. The police and volunteers did a great job of controlling traffic as the marathon course does disrupt quite a few residents. We enjoyed the weekend very much and as we drove back to Minnesota my wife and I discussed that this was the most organized and enjoyable marathon we have experienced.

This is absolutely a gorgeous course!

The weather for the '07 marathon was next to perfect! The beautiful neighborhoods with the manicured lawns, and the many tree-lined streets make this course absolutely beautiful! Major thoroughfares in Kansas City are blocked off on a Saturday morning for this run. The hilly nature of the course probably keeps it out of contention for getting a PR, unless it's your first one, but your muscles won't get locked into a repetitive-use mode that is possible with flat courses (so I hear), and for pure "scenic and beautiful," this course likely rates near the top! Finishers got both a cotton tee, and a technical shirt, and I also got a nice long-sleeve tee in a trivia session during the pre-race bus tour. Thank you to all of the gracious supporters along the course, and to all of the volunteers for a great experience!

Great course... not so much for organization

I live in Kansas City, but the course really is one of the most scenic. You never lose interest. The hill at the beginning definitely gets you out of warm-up mode, and the hill at mile 21 at the end is tough. It was a good course though, because you are never bored and there is a lot to see. BUT there need to be more porta-potties. I went twice at convenience stores, and I wasn't alone. Also, they ran out of finishers' t-shirts and medals at the end. They mailed them to me more than 2 months later, but it wasn't the same. Hopefully it will get better next year. Because I live here, I will definitely do it again.

This one's worth doing every year!

I would recommend this marathon for anyone who likes to have a few big hills, some minor rolling ones, and plenty of flat land. Two weeks before this marathon, I ran one in Columbia, MO. The KC Marathon's hills were nothing in comparison! Actually, this race in 2006 was my best so far; I PR'd by 20-something seconds over the St. Louis Marathon. I wish we had more of a crowd come out to support us, but the support from the organizers and volunteers was pretty sustaining!

One of the best marathons I've run.

I've run almost 50 marathons across the U.S., Mexico and Canada and several marathons in Kansas City. The new Waddell & Reed Kansas City Marathon is top notch. I'm very familiar with Kansas City and don't think the course could get any better - but we should wait till 2007. The course offers a great tour of just about everything Kansas City has to offer, Crown Center, Union Station, Liberty Memorial, The Plaza, Ward Parkway, 18th & Vine (location of the historic Jazz District and the Negro League Baseball Museum). October weather in Kansas City is near perfect for a marathon, not too hot and not too cold. Nice medal and very nice technical finisher's shirt that is in addition to regular cotton shirt you get for just signing up. I would recommend that everyone give this one a try.

Very nice race!

Great course - very scenic. Good aid stations; one even had vaseline right when I needed it. Great snacks at the aid stations as well. I thought organizers did a great job, and I'm expecting an even better race in '07. Two t-shirts, good medal, beer tent, good weather.... Only con? Not enough porta-potties. Will definitely do it in '07... the fall foliage will be beautiful!

Run this if you get bored with flat & are an alpha

The hills were challenging, but not impossible, and the weather was perfect. Yeah, trying to find a porto during the race was not going to happen, but the run is very scenic - part of it is through "the plaza" a Seville Spain replica, with flowered boulevards. At the end, they also had nice music, a beer hangout and a relaxing venue. For a small race, it held my interest throughout. Just don't think your going to do a PR. Think you are going to face a rolling challenge. Notes of wisdom for the future: need more parking directions/signage in the morning.

Up and Down - the Rollercoaster Marathon

It was my first KC Marathon and I went in thinking KC was pretty flat. I don't think so anymore. There are two big hills, but it's almost never flat. It felt like going up and down from start to finish. Anyway the scenery is nice. Water stations suck. Organization and sponsors? Listen to me: PUT A CAP ON THE GLASS WITH A STRAW!!! A small marathon like Omaha gets it. How hard is it to understand that running and trying drink of a glass without slowing down and spilling is impossible? Chicago two weeks later same deal. What's wrong with these people??? I got it. They do not run 26.2 miles.

Good Course, Mediocre Organization

the course is really pretty. they do a great job of showcasing the city. two hills worth mentioning. one at mile 3. one at mile 21. but, overall, good course. on the otherhand, the organization of the race was pretty poor. they ran out of finisher t-shirts for marathoners (said they will mail them) and medals for half marathoners. each runner was given ONE 8-ounce bottle of water at the finish (TERRIBLE). water stops were usually every two miles. potties were few and very far between.

What a great first marathon!

This was my first marathon. I wasn't sure what to expect because I had heard the awful things about the 2005 K.C. Marathon, and several people tried to discourage me from running this as my first. But it was awesome! The hills weren't bad at all. The course was beautiful - running by some of K.C.'s best landmarks. I enjoyed the bands playing music every mile or so, and the volunteers at the water stations were awesome! I wish there were more spectators though....

Will Definitely Return!

I heard about the course problems last year and didn't know what to expect this year. However, I would highly recommend the KC Marathon. It was definitely a beautiful course; great weather, with the fall colors just starting to show. The hills were doable, and in my opinion, that makes it much more interesting than a flat marathon. All the goodies were wonderful to get: 2 shirts, nice medal, and a restaurant gift card. Much appreciation to the race directors and volunteers, you all did a great job and I loved it!

Hills and sloping streets about got me.

Everyone was very nice but the race could use some special touches. I needed petroleum jelly but could not find any at any of the water stations. Gobs of it on cardboard would have been a lifesaver. All in all, though, it was a great race with a lot of nice people eager to help. The hills and sloping pavement still about ruined me.

Great organization and scenic course!

This was my first Kansas City Marathon, 11th overall, and I absolutely loved the course. I was so impressed with the organization (from well run aid stations to the course monitors). If you do this marathon, be prepared for a rolling course and a long, gradual incline in miles 20-22. It's not the easiest race, but if you're looking for a challenge and want to experience a scenic race, Kansas City is it!

A medal would be nice

This was my ninth marathon, and though it was the most challenging, it simply pays to do your homework. That's the real reason why I ran this one. Several of my running buddies have talked about how difficult this course is and a few have DNF'd the course as well. I welcomed the challenge. Great aid stations and crowd support. The only downside is that they ran out of medals for the finishers, and I'll have to wait six to eight weeks to receive mine in the mail.

Friendliest half in years

I completed the half marathon. Being from Houston the course was hilly. The good news is there was an equal amount of decline for all of the inclines. The course wasn't as nice as the Marine Corp or Avenue of the Giants, but it was nicer than many. The roads were mostly tree-lined, so there was plenty of shade on what turned out to be a perfect race day with plenty sunshine. The finish area was great, with bands, food, and great local beer. The roads were wide and could have easily handled many more than the the 3,000 runners that showed up (2/3 of which were for the half). The volunteers were some of the friendliest and most helpful of the seven marathons and dozens of halfs that I have completed over the last 10 years. The race was light on spectators, but those that came out were especially encouraging. Probably can't get a PR, but a great training run (half) for those focused on fall marathons.

Beautiful urban course!

I'm among the marathoners that participated in last year's hot, humid, very hilly, and - by some miscommunication - somewhat short race. I had my worst marathon ever but decided to redeem myself in 2006 since the date was changed from September to October. What a difference in the course! The long grinders were taken out and replaced with more scenic fountains and boulevards. The expo was first-class, the organization was superb, the staff was energetic and extremely helpful, and all the jazz bands were terrific! I was even tempted to stop and just listen to one of the blues bands! If you have never been to Kansas City in the autumn, I would highly recommend this wonderful urban running experience. I loved the long downhill finish with all the spectators cheering me on. Okay, okay, they were cheering for everybody! Go to KC!

I have run San Diego, CA and Portland, OR and believe that Kansas City's course was by far the most beautiful and challenging run. Well Organized Race

The organizers did a fantastic job this year, especially considering it was only the second year that the race was back. The course was a great tour of the city. It featured many of Kansas City's beautiful fountains and historic neighborhoods. I especially liked running through the Plaza, Brookside, and the 18th and Vine district. Yes, there were some hills; however, a good portion of the course was relatively flat and there were some nice declines. The bands along the course were great. The "finisher" t-shirt (a Dri-Fit running shirt) was a nice touch. The volunteers did a great job at the aid stations and there was plenty of water and PowerAde. The spectators that did come out were awesome; however, considering the population of the metropolitan area, the crowd support was fairly thin in a lot of areas. I look forward to next year's race and hope that the weather will be a little cooler and the pollen count lower. Overall the organizers produced a great product this year and I would recommend this race to other runners.

(I'm a few years late in submitting my comments, but better late than never, right?) This was my first marathon in 2003 and I found it to be pretty hard, probably because it was my first. Hills and Heat

Well organized, despite the slight miscue on length (better short than long!!!). Very hot and humid, hit 11 of 12 water points, and wish I'd have hit the one I skipped. Elevation chart resembled an EKG and the real hills were a challenge also.

A big improvement

This race was a huge improvement over the previous courses. This course is hilly and it was a warm day, but any course in KC will be hilly and I will take the heat over the freezing rain from previous years when it was later in the year. There were several problems: The course was short (a biggie), water and Gatorade were warm at most of the aid stations, and some of the aid stations were not organized well. I really enjoyed it and I am looking forward to running it next year, something I was not thinking after running this race in previous years.

Scenic, hilly marathon

Human nature is such that a faux paus such as the 0.4 mile shortfall in distance is almost certain not to be repeated in future years. From a scenic perspective, the course seemed to cover the best of KC Missouri; from a hill perspective, it seemed to cover them all. The marathon should be moved into early October to reduce the risk of running in heat and humidity. The bands, volunteers and spectators, in combination with the course (excluding the hills), made this a memorable race and I'll do it again. But next time, I'll look to make sure that the elevation chart has a flatter line.

Who turned up the heat?

Inaugural marathons are seldom without flaws, and the Waddell & Reed Marathon was certainly no exception; however a round of applause is well deserved by Eladio Valdez and staff for designing a challenging yet attractive course which featured historical landmarks and local attractions throughout Kansas City. This was my 15th marathon and 4th in Kansas City. The hills were demanding and the humidity took its toll on me, but marathons are not supposed to be easy. The expo was small, but organized and adequate, the course was well marked (in most areas), and the volunteers were supportive and helpful. KCPD did an outstanding job with traffic control, the starting line was easy to access, and there was ample space near and around the starting line to stretch and conduct pre-race rituals prior to the start. Parking was plentiful and easy to access near the starting line, however space was limited near the finish line. The finish line at the Freight House District was a nice touch for the runners. This event, along with the parade and other activities near Union Station, presented a festive atmosphere, and overall I thought this marathon was a success. I commend those who volunteered their personal time and hard work to make this inaugural event a enjoyable experience for the participants. A special thank you to the lady at mile 21 who provided ice cubes to us 'back of the pack' runners as we struggled with the heat and humidity; your generosity was greatly appreciated. Despite the .4-mile discrepancy, which was later revealed through the local media, I will run this event again.

Training in Colorado or Utah would help!

This is by far the hardest course for a marathon or half marathon that I have ever run. I remember 1-2 miles where I was not running up or down a hill (long, steep hills). UNACCEPTABLE! That does not make for a fun experience. The following are areas to improve, if you have another race. 1. Anyone who knows anything about running knows you need COLD water/sports drinks. UNACCEPTABLE! 2. Accurate course distance: if this was a Boston qualifier, I am positive that the USATF would be very upset. I didn't have a GPS and knew we were short. UNACCEPTABLE! 3. Split times (5k, 10k, half, etc.) and raise the mile markers so people can see them in crowds. Although I had a great race with a good time, I would not return or recommend this course to anyone. The organizers need to bring someone on board that has commonsense knowledge of running, and what marathons are about. Your one positive would be the Westin Hotel. GREAT JOB!

Hills okay, but not in September!

I have ran the KCM four times now and each time the course was different. The 2005 addition was very scenic but more challenging than the previous three. I have run marathons coast to coast and just about everywhere in between. Some of them had very long and steep hills, but not an abundance. Kansas City had way too many long steep hills and ordinarily I don't have a problem with them. However, throw in the heat and humidity factor and you don't have a race - you have a survival event! All other factors were great and appreciated. I would highly suggest that the organizers consider much-easier-to-locate mile markers! Put them on BOTH sides of the street, especially in the early stages of the race. Would I run it again? Probably not, and that's not due to anything other than that I have run it four times and there are only so many marathons and so little time!

Glad this race is back!

I ran the half-marathon and thought this was a great race for Kansas City. I agree that more work needs to be done on the logistics (marking the course correctly, changing the date the later in the fall, and manning the aid stations better), but for the first year back, I was very pleased overall. This was a huge improvement over the previous KC marathons/half-marathons. The course was very scenic and moderately challenging. For the people who were frustrated by the hills and the weather, these should not have taken anyone by surprise, especially those who are from the Midwest and know how September weather can vary. Anyone who lives in KC knows how hilly this area is and that a flat course would be near impossible (unless, of course, we ran loops around a track). I think whatever race you decide to do, make sure to do your research. Check the elevation maps and then base your training on the type of course you will be running. If you are going to be running hills in your race, train on hills. I'm looking forward to running this race again next year! Let's keep this race going and make KC proud!

A Good First Try

Back after a one-year hiatus, the Kansas City Marathon gave a valiant effort. The new course was scenic, and there was much more organization to this race than previous Kansas City Marathons. Now on to the good and bad. The Good: - Scenic course. Much better than the '02 & '03 courses that had you run uphill for the final mile. The last 2 miles downhill were preferable. - Great volunteers. Not to be biased to my hometown, but the volunteers were extremely enthusiastic and made up for the small number of spectators. - The police. They did a tremendous job controlling traffic... better than any other marathon I've run. - The post-race was great. Free beer, free pasta, what more could one want? - Having this the weekend of Oktoberfest, Plaza Art Fair, American Royal Parade, etc. made for a great weekend. The Bad: - The hills. Toughest course I've run... but then again, no one has ever said a marathon should be easy. - The heat. Not as bad as LA in '04 or NYC in '03, but still hotter than I'd prefer. - The water stops. Not enough of 'em. Every 1.5 miles would be my preference - it gets hot in KC in September; I need my water. This was a good first effort for the new organizers and I expect it to get much better in the future. See you next year.

Too many hills.

Great city. Bad marathon. The course was poorly marked and ended up being 25.8 miles. The hills were too many and too big. Nice try KC but I won't be back. I put in 4 months of hard training only to run on an impossible course that didn't even measure up to standard length. I'll do Chicago instead next year but this fall was wasted in KC.

Good Try at Reviving the KC Marathon

The course was hilly. But I expect that in KC. The weather was a bit hotter and more humid that I like. Once suggestion might be to have the even later in the year. September can be hard to predict in terms of weather. The course went by some great spots in KC. That is a big improvement from previous KC Marathon routes. It was also nice having bands playing music at various locations along the course. The after-party race celebration was great. The most disappointing part is the fact that the marathon and 1/2 course is probably .4 miles short due to confusion on the route. I finished thinking that I PR'd. Come to find out that I probably didn't. Thank goodness I had already qualified for Boston and really didn't need this marathon for that. I would like to see it continue. I think they are on the right track.

Much improved

What a great return for the KC Marathon. Although the weather turned this from a race to a training run, I could not have been more impressed by the organization and volunteer support. Cheerful, helpful and encouraging folks greeted me at every aid station. The course was tough.... welcome to KC! But scenery was actually interesting and an excellent tour of KC's highlights. The bands (many more then I expected) rocked. Post-race food was a rare treat. (Thank you, Lidia's!) Colder water at the aid stations would have been appreciated, but overall I was impressed by the great job of all volunteers and the KC Police Department. It was nice to be treated with respect in a city that has not historically embraced this event. Kudos to all involved.

HAS LOTS OF POTENTIAL.

This marathon could be a lot better if the people of Kansas City would embrace it. I felt the organizers did a great job. A full meal provided by Jack Stack Barbeque was greatly appreciated. They also had several drawings for prizes ranging from a free pair of running shoes to a one-year lease on a MINI Cooper Convertible courtesy of Baron Automotive. The marathon was also the same weekend as the KC Art Festival. The race did have its problems, though. 1. They need more and better-manned water stops. They seemed to be spread out a little far, and some were manned by one or two people. 2. A mile marker every mile would be nice. It is hard to pace yourself if you do not have a Garmin or mile markers to go by. I saw the first one at mile 3. 3. More volunteers and spectators would be great. Spectators were few and spread out. 4. Though it was not fixable, the heat and humidity made me glad I was just doing the half that day. The course was rolling, which I believe would not be too bad if it were not for the heat. Hats off to the Kansas City Police Dept. They did a great job. I saw several instances where they had to run out in front of cars to stop them. I may have to give the full a try next year.

Thumbs up!

The course route is excellent, as it takes you through most of Kansas City's noted and scenic neighborhoods. Organization was quite good for a nascent event. Points deducted for serving warm Powerade and water at the aid stations. Cool drinks on a hot day please! Points added for the volunteer teams, however. The vols were supportive and SO kind, it made a big difference. Also, the bands were a nice touch. I've run a 'Rock & Roll' race before and thought the concept was overrated, but the bands on this course were diverse and sounded great. Spectators get 5 stars.... the quantity was a little thin but man the people who did come out were awesome and supportive. Even the police directing traffic along the course were supportive. Overall I think this was a great marathon; the effort was there, organization-wise, and the KC community deserves big kudos for their kindness. That said, hoo wee... was it ever tough. Kansas City is a hilly city and there were 6 very tough climbs on the course. There's no way around it, so don't train exclusively on flats! And a *very* small aside (in case tournament directors are reading this).... The commemorative tee shirts were LAME! Long-sleeve is appreciated, and shirts that we can train in (i.e. not cotton) would be even better. All things considered, however, I thought KC put on a great race and I hope they continue to grow it in the future. You can definitely envision Twin Cities-like support from the community down the line. Keep up the good work!

Good Half-Marathon

First off, I ran the half, not the full, and thought it went quite well. Some Comments: 1. I thought the weather was actually not too bad. 2. I thought the hills were going to be worse, but training on really steep hills definitely paid off for the not-so-steep ones where I was able to make up time. 3. In response to no mile markers until mile 7, there were in fact markers from 1-6. And 7-12 (the half). 4. I thought the course could have had a few more signs pointing to show where to run. 5. As said before bigger cups for the water and Gatorade would have been nice. 6. Pretty good control of traffic except one time where a lady nearly hit a group of us with her Altima. 7. All in all a good race... I just wish there were showers at the end so I could have stayed for the festivities longer.

First-timer caught off guard by hills

It was my first marathon and I had never been to Kansas City. I heard about the hills but did not understand what that really meant. They killed me. I barely finished due to some knee issues, but at the finish it didnt seem like I was the only one. I will be back to challenge the course.

2002 and 2003 course was better

I liked Cliff Drive in November ('02 and '03 courses). Smell of fall in the air and all that. None of that for '05. And you can't tell me that either course was actually the billed distance. There was a little south, west, or north around the Liberty Memorial that we didn't run. None of us ever saw the 2-mile marker. Why? We didn't run the full course. The rest of the course was exactly as shown on the race map. Where did we make up the missing 3 or 4 tenths? A running associate of mine did the half. Monster PR for the guy. Hills, heat, big PR? No way. I don't want to totally bash the event. The course was suburban/city scenic if you know what I mean. There was more flat to the course than I expected but not much more. It was possible to find parking. Plenty to eat and drink at the finish. On with the bad now. Why chip time an event and then only post gun times? Because someone didn't check to make sure the start mat was set up properly. The tiny cups of water and Gatorade at aid stations were a problem. Last issue, i believe they double-dipped the awards and that's just lazy.

good course, lots of hills

This was my first marathon. The course was well marked and staffed with cheerful volunteers at all intersections. The aid stations were well placed; I liked the water sponges at one and the offer of hose misting at another - just when I needed it most. The descent into the downtown area gave a boost to us back-of-the-packers striving towards the finish. I will do it again next year. Train for hills.

Hilly + Hot + Humid = Good Challenge

I want to thank Waddell & Reed and the city of Kansas City for inviting me to your race. It was a scenic and interesting marathon course that was very challenging given the hot and humid weather. This marathon may have sacrificed a more predictable cooler day to be involved with (at least) five other events that contributed to a lively and exciting trip to Kansas City. Speaking as a runner on a budget, this made my marathon trip an affordable vacation with my family. After the marathon I had a couple of free beers from Boulevard Brewery (yum!), we caught part of a parade, saw a train exhibit at Union Station, and then went to the Oktoberfest. The next day we went to the Plaza Art Festival and used a $25 gift certificate (included with marathon registration) to eat at an excellent restaurant in the Freighthouse district. Was I pleased with my marathon time? No, but it's KC where you know you will have a very hilly course. So why not go for the 26.2-mile tour of the city, run for the sake of saying you did it, and save some energy for all the other events. P.S. It also had a good website with marathon advice from Eladio Valdez, the course designer.

As hilly as expected and inaccurate distance

I expected a hilly course, and that it was. But anyone running this distance in KC should come expecting the hills. To me, the course was as good as it could have been given the restraints. The distance being off is the reason for the low organization score. This is completely unacceptable for a qualifying course. The aid stations were plenty but not true aid stations. The organizers should have done their homework to learn what goes into a true aid station. They had small cups of warm water, bad PowerAde and that was it! Where were the Band-Aids, ibuprofen, Sportslick/Vaseline and Icy Hot/Biofreeze? These are all things runners expect to be provided as part of the aid. Best Buy and Runners Edge aid stations were great! There were a large number of volunteers for cheering and traffic. They did a great job!

Lots of hills and great volunteers

My running partner approached me with the idea of the KC Marathon. He said the site said 'rolling hills.' I'm here to tell you I feel like I ran every hill in Missouri and Kansas. I have run Chicago and San Diego twice and my slowest time was a casual 4:09 in San Diego. I'm here to tell you no one will ever do a PB at KC. I finished in 4:56. The only negative thing I have to say that's not course related was that the spacing of fluids didn't seem adequate. Maybe it was the small cups and the humidity but I felt myself wanting fluids more often than I got them. One positive note I have is the volunteers. They were unmatched by any of the places I have been. I was glad to hear prizes were given to the volunteers as well as the runners. Great concept! Oh yeah, and what a wonderful job the KC police dept. did with traffic. They had quite a challenge. If you just HAVE to do a KC Marathon, train for hills a lot!

A great effort for a new race!

I did the half and had a blast. Sure, there were plenty of hills similar to Memphis, but I expected that. I like making up time on the declines. There was only one steep hill and it was short. Packet pick-up was totally painless, parking race morning was excellent, and the small number of participants made the whole experience hassle free. The volunteers on the course were wonderful and so enthusiastic, they more than made up for lack of spectators that early in the morning. I've never received that much encouragment in any race. Loved Santa and Snow White - it was all in good fun. If I had to find a negative, it would be that the finisher's medal for the half (don't know about the full) was the smallest I've ever seen - even the ribbon was shorter than usual. But that is minor. I think they had some problems with the chips not registering a few participants' times and currently have switched to gun time for official results. Regardless, I've done a number of races both large and small, and this was a winner in my book. If it was closer to home I'd definitely do this race again.

WAY TOO HILLY!!

The website said 'rolling terrain.' What we got were MOUNTAINS. The course was scenic but brutal. Add 20 minutes to your anticipated time. There were more volunteers than spectators and it got a little lonely out there running up those hills. The police did a GREAT job controlling traffic (they were everywhere). Post-race eats included a free pasta meal at an Italian restaurant near the finish line! (awesome) I love Kansas City. The organizers and the city did a great job and are trying to get a big-time marathon going. Unfortunately until they find a flatter course they are going to have problems growing this race into a premier event. I struggled through the 26 or so miles with a 3:34:48. I'd love to come back to KC, but don't count on me until they re-do the course.

The course was tough

The course was very hilly. I trained for hills and did well through mile 17, then the heat, humidity, and hills took their toll. Mile markers were hard to pick out in spots, they should be bigger. The volunteers were awesome, but there were too few aid stations for the heat. I know KC wanted to make this an event that included the American Royal Parade, and Plaza art fair, but if this was held two weeks later it would have been a much more manageable feat.

Decent small race, tough course, warm water

We traveled from TX to run this race, expecting a slightly larger turnout. Was a little disapointed to find only about 500 marathon runners signed up at the time of the expo. Staying at the host hotel was very convenient; the hotel is quite nice and there are many restaurants/shops in the Crown Center area adjacent to the hotel (also the race start was right outside the front door). We barely had to leave the hotel during our 3 day stay in KC. The marathon course was much tougher than expected; the entire course was literally one large uphill/downhill after another. Steep downhill during the last 2 miles is very hard on tired legs. Our largest complaint would definitely have to be the quality of the water at the aid stations. The water at EVERY SINGLE STOP was warm. This does not sit well at all, especially after the first few miles. Overall, this is a nice smaller race, the volunteers were all very friendly and we enjoyed the day. We were lucky to run a good race, despite the tough course and warm water.

I Wouldn't Do This Again

The KC Marathon advertised a challenging course with bands along the way. Half of the bands were in the first four miles and I wish I could say the same for the hills. Even when the race could have avoided hills it embraced them, possibly to run by some meaningless landmark or city bigwig's home. Late September is far too warm for a marathon in this area--Quad Cities had the same problem in the past. I had the idea the committee changed the date to coincide with an art fair and other events. Bad move. Lots of complaints of cramping, slow times, hard course. On the positive side--tremendous post race party!!!!Awards were fine, prize drawings kept crowd around. Oh--and KC--if you want to 'rebuild' your marathon, don't offer a 5K, a relay, and a half-marathon with it, and don't make the half marathon the feature race. With so many choices and this course, no one will do your marathon in a couple of years. Move it to early spring or late fall, marathon only. Think like a big city if you want to be like one.

Anticipated hills, but not this many.

I was glad to see the KC Marathon return. Expecting hills, I trained for them, but was not prepared to run 75% of the race at an incline. With temperatures in the 80's and high humidity, I was too exhausted to appreciate the historic and significant spots along the route. In addition, according to my GPS watch, the 3rd mile marker was off by about .4 mile... very frustrating as I questioned the rest of the marathon route. (I know GPS watches are not always accurate, but I also know I was not running a 6-minute mile.) In the end, the marathon course was accurate in length, but I'm not sure about the half.

I did the half, not the full, but the course was about as flat as we could have here. It was a nice downhill finish, and the organizers got their volunteers out well. Good first effort; I will be back in 2006, maybe for the full!

Not in the top 3 half-marathons in KC area

Things I liked about the half-marathon: 1) overcast skies reduced heat stress. Not something the race organizers should get credit for. Things I didn't like about the half-marathon: 1) No mile markers until mile #7 - makes it hard to judge pace. 2) Lack of directions at turns - some had cones, most didn't. Cops did a good job of helping while they were directing vehicle traffic. Better to have pavement marked or cones set up, or even a live person to point the way. None of that existed at the next-to-last turn on the course, where the guy in front of me and I ran straight instead of turning, and got to run a couple of extra blocks. Volunteers need to be trained to point the way, or at least holler if you guess wrong on directions. It's asking a lot to expect runners to memorize street maps of that area, especially 13 miles into the race. 3) Aid stations were spaced OK, but drinks were served in Dixie cups holding about 3 oz., and most volunteers weren't aware that runners might want more than one cup. I prefer not to come to a dead stop to get refreshments, but had to do so several times. 4) $45 entry fee was higher than other area half-marathons; for that you got an ugly T-shirt and so-so post-race eats. (Hospital Hill includes shorts, most other races a decent long-sleeve shirt or technical shirt.) Bottom line - if you want to run a half-marathon in Kansas City or Lawrence, put this one at the bottom of the list. See MARA's website for several other better options.

My first marathon...

'Like an idiot', I didn't train for hills. This was my first marathon so I didn't know what to expect. I finished, but it was 45 minutes after my projected time. However, like I said, it was my fault for not doing hill training. The volunteers were great for me and very encouraging. The only thing I really didn't like were the long out-and-backs.

Volunteers hung in there

I am a certified back-of-the-packer. Consequently I am often lonely. While there were few volunteers, I will say that they stayed out there in pretty crummy weather. I loved the park on the second half, and I love the mission of the marathon to hit all neighborhoods, not just the affluent.

My first marathon

Since this was my first marathon I have nothing to compare it with. But I enjoyed it. I'm from Tulsa so I didn't really know what to expect from the course. I was told it was somewhat hilly by a local, that was certainly an understatement. It would have been more accurate to describe it as having a few flat spots. But I finished it running, so it was a good experience. The volunteers were real friendly, too bad there weren't more of them, maybe next year. One thing I was a little surprised at was there were no energy bars or energy gels on the course. I brought my own, but I think for the price they could have been provided. I missed my expected time by about 30 minutes - oh well, at least I'll be able to set a PR next marathon.

Enjoyable Marathon

I enjoyed this marathon very much. The many outs and backs give you an opportunity to greet other runners and the 2-mile hill up Cliff Drive is something to brag about. The low-key nature of having no expo and no pasta diner was refreshing. But I don't see what the race is getting out of Humana to have their name dominating everything. A mile and 1/2 M would be useful.

Challenging course with a unique uphill finish

Things I liked about the marathon: 1) Challenging course 2) Unique steep uphill finish 3) Friendly and supportive volunteers 4) Cliff Drive (Mile 13 thru 17 scenic and downhill) 5) Wide course 6) Cool temps (mid 40's) 7) Good traffic control by KCPD 8) The Warehouse district (an eyesore and lonely stretch) but could be considered KC's version of heartbreak hill 9) Convenient parking Things I disliked: 1) Course in some areas not well marked. At the 10 mile point I was unsure which direction to go (had to guess), at around the the 22 mile point I had to ask a spectator which way to go. On the final out and back leg, was unsure how far to go before turning back, the turn around point was indicated by chalk markings on the concrete. A traffic cone or a more visable marker would have been helpful. 2) I did not notice any race event people along the course calling out times to runners. Particularly at the 13-mile point... Overall view: This was my 10th marathon and 3rd in Kansas City, and probably not the most attractive that I have participated in. However, I think the shortcoming of this event is due to lack of staff support. I think over time this event will improve as support grows. I commend the effort of those who volunteered and supported this event. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.

This was a very depressing experience

This was my 7th marathon with 5 of them in KC. This was the first time I've run this particular course and I have nothing good to say about it. Why can't the course organizers plan a course that goes through nicer areas of the city? I'm guessing it's a cost issue associated with traffic control. Why can't the old Macy's Marathon course, which started downtown and ended at the Barstow School at 106th and State Line, be resurrected? The hills took everything out of me by mile 25 and I had to walk/jog the last mile, which also was mostly uphill. The five different out-and-back sections of the race are boring and the one going downhill into a depressing industrial section of the 'bottoms' area was downright depressing. Having timing chips this year was an improvement, but there were no timers anywhere on the course, so unless you were keeping your own time, you didn't know your time. I was asked several times by other runners what time it was. At times I was running by myself without any spectators or other runners around, which is also depressing. The volunteers were friendly, but I got tired of hearing 'looking good' for the 200th time. While the previous KC Marathon (Rib Run) wasn't the greatest, at least there were some bands and excitement associated with that race which was not in evidence in this race. I've always thought that KC was a large enough community that running just a marathon without having to include a 10K and a 1/2 marathon could happen. The weather in KC at this time of year is so unpredictable. This year it was in the 40s with a little rain and a strong wind, and I would recommend that weather problems could be avoided by moving the race date back about 2 weeks.

A Bare Bones Marathon!!!

As a local, I've run this race the past two years, but I doubt I'll run it again... unless it is MUCH improved. I've run the Des Moines, Omaha and Wichita Marathons and Kanas City ranks as a distant fourth in this region. Obviously, the organizers of this race do not care to put on a marathon of any quality. Maybe that's why the marathon participation was down by 30% this year. Complaints: - NO expo, just a packet pick-up (at Des Moines this year they had a local Kansas City running store selling their wares... could not KC get this running store?!?). - No pasta dinner. - No marathon signs anywhere downtown. - No pace groups. - A terrible website that is not updated at all. - For such a hilly course it really should have a course elevation map. - No spectators (maybe if they had the course wind some of KC's scenic neighborhoods they'd have some people out there - like Trolley or Hospital Hill). - The least scenic marathon course I've ever run. With so many great neighborhoods why do they run the course over the rundown sections of town? - Being how small this race is, it is very easy to miss the signs for the out-and-backs. They need a volunteer at each out-and-back telling the runners where they need to go. - Just Gatorade and water at the finish. NO FOOD. Being from KC, I had my wife drive me to the nearest Einstein Bros. so that I could start reloading on carbs. Apparently, I see from the comment below there was food on the 28th floor!!! How would anyone know this since there were no signs, nor did the volunteers I asked know this? - Early bird race fee of $60. What does one get for $60? Certainly not food when I finished (or so I thought and was told). This is a bare bones marathon and should have a fee that is appropriate. I really don't like complaining about a race considering that it is a volunteer effort. But this marathon is so inferior to any other marathon put on by cities substantially smaller. I really do feel sorry for out-of-towners that come to this marathon. You get more organization, support and amenities at most local 5Ks. I've tried to support my local marathon through my participaton, but no more... I'll stick with just doing KC's two other marathons - Gobbler Grind and Olathe.

Difficult to set a PR on this course

Decided to sign up for this one at the last minute to use as a long training run for a marathon in early December. This was definitely a hill-packed marathon. You are either going up or downhill 90% of the time. I had been training on hills so I was able to handle the hills, because the aren't huge hills. My biggest complaint is aid stations - every two mile aid stations were advertised, but near the end where water is needed the most, they were few and far between. Also a volunteer near the end was saying, 'only 10 blocks all down hill'. What was that all about!?!?! That kind of misinformation can break you mentally at the end of a marathon - it is better as a volunteer NOT to comment on the course. I would run this one again!

Brutal course with nice volunteers and spectators

This course should be rated as difficult due to the excessive amount of hills. I feel there is more interesting parts of K.C. that the route could include without so many hills. Organizers should consider moving this race up a month due to the bad weather year after year. Volunteers and spectators were very friendly. I didn't expect too many spectators due to the lack of advertising this marathon gets. No one knows about it, unless you're a runner.

What a hard course!!!

I ran the 5K portion of the race in 2002 and thought that was challenging. This year I ran the 1/2 marathon and now I question if I will do this race again. It is good for experienced runners that want a challenge, but for beginners (like me), this course is difficult. KC offers beautiful neighborhoods and scenery and this course does not show the best of KC. There is limited sponsorship, therefore, there is pretty much nothing at the end. This year we had to take the elevator up in the hotel to even collect our goodies. Organizers needed to consider thousands of sweaty runners cramming into the elevators was not going to be pleasant (for the runners or guests in the hotel). This was not a well publicized race so there was not much crowd support. Though, those that did brave the chilly weather were full of spirit. The only way I will do this race again is if I decide to see if I can beat my time from this year. Otherwise, it is not a very fun race.

Not for a first-timer, but great

Good challenging course. It was hilly throughout including the uphill most of the last mile. There were several down-and-back portions of the course. Most won't find this appealing - the upside is you experience camaraderie with fellow runners. Being a local, I expected the unpredictable weather and cool temps. I also figured on few spectators but the ones who would be there would be upbeat and friendly.

I PR'd and it was cool, but otherwise ...

This was my roughly 10th different marathon - here are my expectations: 1. Scenic course showing off the locale. 2. Pre-race expo. 3. Some spectators. Here's what I saw in KC: 1. We drove some beautiful parkways in KC - we didn't run them. Since the course was very hilly, I don't think it would be any less hilly to get to anywhere in KC. 2. No expo. 3. Barely anyone on the course, even with about 1,500 participants in the marathon, 1/2 marathon, and 5K. Afterwards, the 3 people in our group stayed overnight and talked to many locals. No one knew about the marathon. Here's why we chose KC: 1. Saturday marathon (can stretch out a day before hitting the road). 2. Could drive to it. 3. Happens in late fall. 4. Certified course.

Just a plain race, nothing interesting about it

The course is hilly, which, even though it's hard, that's fine. Worse though, is the dullness and plain ugliness of the course. There are so many beautiful areas of Kansas City, I find it hard to believe this is the route chosen. The finish line is practically an alley, many areas of the course are places I wouldn't feel safe driving through any other time and there aren't many good spectator opportunities. The pre- and post-race activities were non-existent. I've run in first-year, small races with better food and drinks afterward. I had to ask three people where the post-race activities were (the 28th floor?) and after getting there, there were a few apples, green bananas, some juice and coffee. And this wasn't at the tail-end of the day either. I don't know what the later marathoners found when they got there. I hope that the organizers can tweak the route - keep the hills, at least they're a defining feature. But certainly there are some more pleasant places to show visitors here for a race.

Brutal course and I finished with a PR

There is no reason that KC can't host a major marathon! The organizers need to decide that the marathon is the jewel and the 5k and 1/2 are merely add ons. Course: The course is brutal and organizers should market it as a difficult marathon. There are a lot of hills and very few flat portions of the course. I can't recall running for more than a mile where it is flat. The hills are not all that difficult, but they are constant. Things were great for me until mile 24. I maintained an even pace until the last 2.2 miles - much uphill. I ran the last 2.2 in 25 minutes because of the difficulty of the course. I set a PR by 12 minutes and finished 3 minutes off my ultimate goal, but I finished a very challenging race. Organization: The marathon felt like a 1/2 marathon with a marathon distance tacked on to it. There was only one aid station that was not on the marathon route. The out-and-back portions of the marathon were lonely. And, at mile 22, someone started letting cars and trucks on the route (I was at a 10-minute pace). Kudos to all of the volunteers at all of the streets that did their job and blocked traffic, you were great and your encouragement was appreciated! The website should have a map with mile markers and an elevation map. Market this thing as it is, a difficult marathon where pacing is the key because the hills will break you. The website also needs to be updated. (On the Thursday before, it still had messages that said start training now and more events are planned - come on.) Local newspaper coverage was not good - if Jason Whitlock (KC Star Columnist) wasn't covering it and participating in it, it may have been non-existent. Thank you Jason! Spectators: If it hadn't been for my family who cheered me on at mile 4, 8, 11, 13, 21 and the finish, there wouldn't have been too many. Overall: I feel a great sense of accomplishment for finishing this marathon. It could be so much better and, as someone who grew up in KC, I hope the directors continue to make improvements.

K.C. could do better

I have run the Kansas City Marathon three times on three different courses and this one was the worst. This town has so much to be proud of, but the race showed little of it. The medical staff that helped me after the race was first-rate, however.

Not bad for a new marathon, but needs work

Being from Kansas City I obviously have a different view than some out of towners. Unfortunately, I think several things could have been done better. The last third of the course is totally depressing. Especially on a cold rainy winter day. Who wants to run through a warehouse district with little chance of fan support or scenic vistas. Kansas City prides itself on miles and miles of beautiful parkways and boulevards that would make a wonderful course, but we never saw them. The miles of downhills aren't very joint friendly either. My last complaint deals with the finishers medal. Although the sponsor made sure their name is prominently displayed, nowhere on the medal does it say Kansas City. It looked like the name of the city was Humana. I don't mean it to sound all negative. I just feel it could have been so much better. Hopefully it will improve each year. A different course would be a huge help.

I liked it better than the Pig or Twin Cities

I really liked the course layout. Sure it was hilly, but you were able to cruise along the cliffs during the hardest part of a marathon (12-18 miles) and several out and back portions of the course allowed you to see and interact with the other runners. Beware! The last .2 mi is the most HELLACIOUS you will encounter on any course. I really liked the crowd support as well. Organization could have been a bit better. (Missed turn right before 10 mile mark.) Some confusion over awards - (Received award for wrong age group) - but nothing major, especially for a first year marathon. Unusually chilly for KC in November from what I understand, but pretty darn good for running a marathon with a long sleeve coolmax shirt and tights. PR by 24 minutes!

Poor organization and preparation

The course was poorly marked, several people made wrong turns because they didn't have enough volunteers to staff confusing intersections, and it was a miserable day weather-wise. The last thing you can't do much about (well, maybe schedule the race for sometime other than November), but the first two are inexcusable. As someone else mentioned the post-race festivities were a joke. Unless you're desperate to spend a few days in KC, this is one to avoid.

First 1/2 Marathon, But Loved It

This was my first half marathon. It was very hilly, but it was beautiful. It was very enjoyable to run. The weather was cool, but I like running in cool weather, so no complaints. I thought there was a lot of support from people. Several times, people playing radios with inspiring music. Thought it was great. I plan on running again in 2003!

Moderately hilly means mountainous

I'm from illinois and when I read 'moderately hilly' on the web site I figured there might be one or two ramps we had to climb. Woah there, not the case at all. I'm sure if you are from Kansas city you think I'm nuts, but Like I said, I'm from Illinois. I wasn't use to the hills we had to climb. This was my first marathon and I enjoyed it a lot. First 20 miles were a blast but the hills really got to you in the last 6. I think I would definitely consider doing Kansas City again, although not if I wanted to pr. You don't do this race for the fans or for the goodies at the end. You do this course if you want a fun challenge and some cool medals when you finish.

This is not a normal marathon....

This is not a marathon for first timers or a place to set a PR. It was my 6th marathon and hardest. The course is very hilly and changelling. The organization was not good. There was no pre-race activites. No pasta party. When I got there (race morning) even though I pre-registred they had run out of tee-shirts. They asked me to sign a list and that they would send it to me. I never got my shirt even though I e-mailed the race director many times. They couldn't find my name even though I am listed on the web-site results. The web-site did not list the schedule of events for the race until the week of the marathon and than it just said 'start training' (and it had the day and start time.) They wouldn't mail out packets or information just confirmation of race entry for marathoners. They had soup and doughnuts to eat after the race in a tent outside. The finisher medals were really cool. I'm really disappointed that I put all my effort time and money into finishing and didn't even get my t-shirt. The spectators were freezing but at least they were out there. Overall I was very disappointed.

One small knock against organization

This race's organizers do what is called double dipping with the awards. As a person who is always just out of the running for an age group award i was disappointed that a race that was otherwise reasonably well thought out and organized blew this one small (and easy to fix) organization detail. Admittedly it doesn't impact very many people. In fact this little item affected 18 people or about 4% of the sub 5hr finishers. 9 men and 9 women. The overall winners, 6 of them, also received age group awards meaning that 6 people received too low an age group award and 6 people, me among them, received no award. it's a lazy way of dealing out medals. the people who win races have so much of the stuff that i've actually had one give me his age group item after a race. Race directors listen up! the winners don't want the age group awards. The organizers of this one have pissed me off and i won't be running it again.

Hilly course, well organized race

Despite the extremely hilly course I ran a PR by 2 minutes on 11/2/02. Since the course was hilly I wore my training shoes rather than the racing flats that I normally wear for marathons. The weather was not too bad, its much better to be a little chilly than too warm for me. Don't start too fast in this marathon or the hills will kill you.

Not a Marathon for Walkers

Even though the website states that the course is open for 7 hours, it wasn't. The police opened the road to traffic when I hit the 4 mile mark about a hour after the start of the race. All walkers and slower runners were required to move to the sidewalks. The water stops were removed fairly quickly so if you didn't have you own water you were out of luck. At mile 12 there was virtually no one behind me that was completing the full marathon. I continued on and completed the marathon even though I wanted to quit. It was lonley on the course. This was my 6th marathon. The organizers did stay at the finish line to pass out the finishing medal. They were terrific to stay outside in the cold weather for such a long time. The course was very scenic through mile 12 through mile 18.

A nice tour of kc!

The day was a cold dark rainy one, but in spite of this I had a great time running this marathon. It was well organized and took the runner through parts of KC that most people don't see. The course is very hilly (yes in KC!) and there weren't a lot of spectators (it WAS cold and rainy) but an excellent first time-run race. I would recommend this race for experienced runners, not first time marathon runners.

I'll Be Back!

Good combination of hills and flats. Starting in the center of downtown was great. The running conditions were perfect. Beat my best time by 15 minutes. Traffic control was spectacular, at least for a 'middle of the pack' runner. The food tent was crowded to say the least. Fan support was decent. The inspirational woman near 32nd & main (around the 4-5 mile mark) was awesome. She needs to move toward the end of the race next year. Thanks for the race, we'll see you again next year.

Hilly but Scenic

This is a very difficult and hilly course. I ran the half-marathon which followed the first 11 miles and then the last 2 miles of the full marathon. I've run many half and full marathons and this is definitely the hilliest course outside of Atlanta (though, marathons are supposed to be challenging). However, it is a fairly senic course. The course goes by many of Kansas City's landmarks, commercial centers and historic sites. I really enjoyed the course. The only change to it I'd like to see is to have the finish moved so that it is not at the end of a half mile trek uphill. Now, as far as the organization goes, that needs to be improved. With over 2,000 particapants in the half and full marathons they need to have some sort of an Expo, not just a packet pick-up. Also, chip timing needs to be implemented. The start is on a narrow street and it took me about 40 seconds to get to the start line. Aid stations were generously staffed (never had to wait for a drink), but there were several stations that had water only - No Gatorade! Not a lot of spectators either, but I've been in marathons with fewer. Also, the ones that were out were extremely enthusiastic. Overall, I really enjoyed this course. Just a few improvements and this could be a terrific mid-size marathon.

Excellent job!

This marathon was top notch! The course was challenging, bur very well thought out. Some may complain that it is hilly, which it is, but that fact does not detract from the beauty of the course. The second 13.1 miles contain 3 different out-and-backs, so you get to see a lot of runners on the way out and back again. The weather was chilly (maybe 40 degrees), but there was no wind. The event organizers did a fantastic job - there were no frills, but they covered all the bases - which to me meant they didn't waste any money and were able to provide all of the necessities. The logistics (packet pick-up, parking, location) were a piece of cake. I had a great time and would highly recommend this event. I have many friends in the KC area and plan on returning to do this marathon again.

A pleasent tour of Kansas City

This race was a pleasent tour of the Kansas City area. Rather early it hit long gradual hills through the city that let you know that this is not a flatlands course. My favorite part of the run was Cliffs Drive, several miles of quiet wooded road at the base of senic cliffs. My least favorite part (besides not being in marathon shape) was the stretch of industrial wasteland between Cliffs Drive and the end of the course. The race started with the marathoners, 1/2 marathoners, and 5kers mixed together on a narrow street. The result was an uncomfortable jockying for position even before the start of the race. If the organizers are planning to start this way again, I strongly recommend they use chip timing. As a note, the fans on the course were fairly sparse. Then again, with temperatures 15-20 degrees below normal and occassional sleet, I was surprised to see any spectators at all. Finally, the normal 'bag of goodies' handed out at package pick-up was virtually empty. However, this was compensated for by a well stocked food, fruit, soup, and stuff tent at the end of the run. This was my fifth marathon in as many years. Mostly because of the numerous gradual hills, I'd say this is a moderately difficult course. Train well and don't expect a PR. Overall though, I'd say it was an enjoyable run.

not one for first timers

Start/finish has easy access off the interstate and plenty of nearby parking. They loose a star for organization by not having timing chips and a couple of the water stops were both undermanned and somewhat far apart. It was cold so water stop frequency wasn't a huge issue but it could have been. They use spotters at several locations to make sure people aren't cutting corners on the out and backs (cheating). They could eliminate the need for this with timing chips. The race is hilly. The first mile is hugely downhill but you have to get back up that huge hill in the last mile. Less than half of the race is flat to nearly flat. Otherwise you were going significantly up or down. I haven't been in a race where so many people crashed due to course difficulty. They were mostly first timers as I spoke with some of them afterwards. If you weren't so tired that you couldn't lift your head then you did get a nice tour of the city. The 8 or so miles along the cliff drive were very scenic and mostly flat. They have a nice finishers medal that has a stained glass look to it. I can't find the race results on the web yet either.
