A real gem of a race you must do at least once

Mobile is an underappreciated gem. This was my 80th marathon and 2nd Mobile. It has the feel of a small-town marathon but the organization and attention to detail of any big city race. Lodging is plentiful and within walking distance of number pick-up, start and finish. I say number pick-up because there are few vendors on site; make sure you bring what you need for race day (if you're a pre-race shopper, this is your one drawback to Mobile - nobody aces everything). Very nice long sleeve tech t-shirt. The start is on a wide street so there's plenty of room for everyone of all paces to spread out. The strength of this race is the course in all respects - variety of neighborhoods, tree-lined streets, colleges, parks and road transitions; traffic control by police and volunteers; miles clearly marked; turns with both volunteers and chalk on the roads. As a 5 and a half hour slogger toward the back of the back, I always appreciate when traffic is still being worked as I walk/jog in the later miles and this was noticeable and done superbly. Aid stations were plentiful and manned by enthusiastic folks. There are some hills (about 600+ feet of climb according to my Garmin) on the full, the half may be flatter; the biggest challenge was around Mile 18. The finish in Bienville Square has a New Orleans French Quarter vibe. The last mile into the finish went past restaurants and shops to visit post- or pre-race. Trees, fountain and park benches to enjoy either healthy fare (bagels, fruit, water) or "I've just went a bunch of miles" fare (red beans/rice, cornbread, pasta salad, beer) were spread throughout the square. The finisher medal was handcrafted by L'Arche Mobile folks - not a fancy, hub-cap sized metal version, but something more personal. There was a band playing and runners enjoying food sitting in an old growth tree-lined park; perfect way to finish up a classy, extremely well-done race. Next year will be their 20th. Make sure you put this on your "must do" list whether you're a 50-stater, a first timer or someone like me looking for a race that does everything right (weather excluded as beyond race director control). See you in 2021!

Go Run This Marathon!

This race is an absolutely wonderful example of a community race! I traveled from CT to Mobile because I wanted to run a marathon on my birthday, and I had never been to Mobile. We stayed at one of the race hotels, which was across the street from packet pick-up- so convenient. Packet pick-up was easy and quick, and there was a small expo with everything a runner could need. There were also the Azalea Trail Maids welcoming the runners- nice touch. In my packet, I found a hand-made birthday card from the charity organization that the race benefits. This really made me feel special and I knew I was in for a great race the next day. The start line was right outside the hotel, and the race started on time (much appreciated since it was 27 degrees out). The first 9 miles of the marathon were combined with the half marathon, but the streets are so wide that it was never a problem. There were ample aid stations with water and gatorade and then a wide variety of other beverages (including warm chicken broth at some) and lots of food options brought by the aid station volunteers. It seemed like there were police officers every block and so many other volunteers including a motorcycle club, teenagers, fraternity and sorority members, recovering addicts, and church congregations posted along the course to help with security and blocking streets, staffing the aid stations and running the finish line and its party. The diversity of the community support was truly impressive. The course itself is mostly flat and you get a tour of lots of neighborhoods of Mobile, including some college campuses and the beautiful botanical gardens. There was always something to look at. The finish line experience was fantastic with the final few miles as a long straightaway down the main drag downtown right into a park for free food, ice cream and beers. The medal is so unique- wooden disks that were hand-painted and shellacked with the race logo and multi-colored stars. Each one is different and so beautiful. I can't recommend this race enough, and think the community support and personal touches are unlike anything I've experienced in the 20 marathons I've run (including Marine Corps, Disney, NYC, Paris, San Diego, SF). I will definitely run it again someday.

Great race

I have run this race 2 years consecutively now and plan on running a third. Nice course, a couple big hills and enthusiastic fans and volunteers. Good cause too.

Well designed and coordinated

It's easy to see why runners return to this race. Excellent organization, great cause 'L'Arche de Mobile' Well placed water stations, great Police course monitoring. Course has one big hill at 18 miles, then mostly downhill to the finish at the beautiful Bienville Square. Great food and drinks at the finish. Looking forward to 2018.

Fantastic Organization with one annoying issue

This race was very well executed. Ease of travel, packet pick up, and race morning logistics with lots of hotels just minutes' walk away from the start line. On behalf of all of the runners, we thank you for holding the race when others unfortunately had to cancel. The Friday night post on facebook reassuring us the race was still on was appreciated. The weather was very cold, but actually a beautiful day. The organizers did a great job of alerting runners of the couple of patches of black ice. On course support in general was excellent. My only complaint is that of headphone use. I almost didn't sign up for this race due to its strict and clear policy that headphones are prohibited and would result in a DQ. I responsibly enjoy the use of headphones in the later miles of the marathon. If this is a race's rule- I will either follow it or not run the race. Reluctantly I signed up knowing I couldn't wear headphones. I was very annoyed to see many many runners wearing headphones with zero consequence. A rule is only as good as its enforcement. If you're not going to enforce it, then don't have it.

Great Nonprofit Marathon

Four of us traveled together from FL to run the full marathon, with three of us having never run there. The fourth runs the marathon every year and recommended it. We stayed in the Holiday Inn and it offered us a late check out and is located essentially right at the start of the race. The course is a bit hilly between 10 and 20 miles, but we expected that. The roads were a bit cambered and that did hurt my knees in the end. Aid stations were plentiful and the volunteer support was awesome at each one and at the finish line. Only true negative I have was the failed chip timing which was tried for the first year. I hope they learn from the experience and continuing to do chip timing in the future. I ended up barely getting a gun time BQ even though I had limited training and started back about 20 yards from the starting line. Awards are hand made by the folks L'Arche Mobile, the charity for the event. We like to support non profit races like this one!

Great Alabama Marathon

This was my 5th time doing the double having done the Blues Marathon in Jackson, MS, and was able to do a very comfortable sub 4. With the 7:30 marathon start the initial chill was out of the air, and the marathon had great weather while out on the course. This marathon has few spectators, but the spectators that come out are wonderful. I know some people complain about the hand made medals but I personally like them. Especially the plaque that you get for doing the double. Also, nice double medal as well when you finish if you do the back-to-back option. 6th time running this marathon and I hope to be back to continue my back-to-back streak. This marathon was the best of the 6 marathon here that I have completed. So great job Marty, the race crew, volunteers, medical staff, etc..,. See you in 2017..

Fun, Friendly Small Town Race

This was a great choice for my 50 Stater Alabama run. Mobile features several interesting attractions, beautiful historic homes and excellent restaurants. (Don't miss Kitchen on George, our favorite.) The marathon was well-organized and wound through scenic neighborhoods, a couple college campuses and some commercial/industrial areas. The one big elevation challenge near mile 19 went by quickly and was soon followed by a nice decline. Volunteers were friendly and helpful. I loved the post-race meal of red beans, rice and corn bread. (I wasn't sure that's what I wanted after running 26.2 miles, but I rate it as my best post-run meal ever!) I was very moved when one of the clients of the benefiting non-profit presented my hand-made medal. (I'm stunned to read comments from those who criticize the quality of the medal. Come on!) It's too bad that official times could not be registered. However, glitches happen. I definitely recommend this race.

great marathon

I too did B2B and was sooo happy that the course was relatively flat. The hill at mile 19 was there but because I was running B2B I took it easy and had no problems. The road surface could have been better but that probably won't change any time soon so suck it up. The medal and plaques that I received were hand made and I thought that was a nice touch. Every one was super friendly. The food and music at the end I enjoyed too.I stayed at the Quality Inn 2 blocks away, it was cheap and they did give me a late check out

Super small-town race

The race was full of Southern charm. While there are not a lot if spectators, the ones that do come out deserve a medal for their enthusiasm! Their are a few hills between miles 15-19, but I was still able to PR (what goes up must come down!). The street parking is abundant and free on race day. The finish party has great food and music. I was a bit surprised that there is no chip timing.

Mobile gets two thumbs up!

I ran this as part of the back to back, with the Mississippi Blues marathon the day before. The folks were all very friendly. I know I heard that it was a flat course somewhere, but I certainly found the hills. Roads in some areas were in tough shape, but all in all Mobile is a winner. The back to back medal is TERRIFIC! The lack of chip timing is a tad weird but if it keeps the costs down and the associations involved benefit greater, I am cool with that. Great food, fun people, and a nice race to do to knock Alabama off the list of 50. For those doing the back to back, I would recommend flying in and out of New Orleans. Was a terrific weekend in the heart of Dixie.

Beautiful race-excellent cause

I love this race. The course is through beautiful downtown Mobile, several universities and the Botanical gardens. BEWARE of the crazy hill around mile 19. But the aid station there is stocked with lots of goodies to keep your mind of it. The medal is simple but perfect. It is handmade by residents of the Le Arche home for adults with disabilities. If you run Blues & first light, you'll also receive a handmade plague made by a resident.

small, organized, pretty course w/ few long hills

I had done Mississippi Blues Marathon the day prior so having the shuttle bus to Mobile was terrific. Expo was small, Hampton Inn was the nicest I've ever been in and in a perfect location. The medal and plaque for the B2B was extra special because it had a photo and information on the artist. Some were upset that there was no huge medal, but the personal 'gift' made the event even more special and unique to me. I had never done a B2B and this was the perfect place to do so, as it was well aided, supportive volunteers and helpful RD. I'd especially like to thank the aid station at mile #18 for the broth, skittles, & fig newtons...you're obviously distance runners. There were a few long hills, but it was mostly quite flat. Weather was perfect, it was easy to navigate from the Hampton Inn, a great value for the money.

Lovely and low key

Southern architecture, beautiful neighborhoods, gorgeous live oaks, and friendly volunteers/spectatorswhat more do you need? This was a very friendly and well-organized race. The L'Arche facility for intellectually challenged adults benefits from this race and I love the finisher's medallion which was made by the residents. They also made plaques for those who did the Back to Back Challenge. Plentiful aid stations and every volunteer gave an encouraging word as I passed. The finish line venue, Bienville Square was a lovely place for the post race party, complete with a live Dixieland band. I'd run it again.

Nice, small, well done!

Did this race as part of the back-to-back with Mississippi Blues. This race is unpretentious but don't let that turn you away. They do a good job for a small race! It was my birthday and they included a handmade birthday card in my packet!! Over the top in my book! They don't use electronic timing but still pull tags off your bib. Expo was very small but friendly. We stayed at the Hampton Inn just a few blocks from the expo and start/finish. I would highly recommend the Hampton, although they would not give us a late checkout. Race course was virtually flat compared to Jackson with only one hill at mile 18 that was a challenge. I live in New England so this course seemed flat to me. Very few spectators along the course but it was scenic. Would recommend if you need to pick up Alabama, as part of the back-to-back, or if you happen to be catching a cruise ship in New Orleans later that day!

Job Well done!

I have run this marathon before and I plan on returning next time (2015) The course is one of the most diverse and changing that I have run on. Starting and finishing downtown, running through upscale neighborhoods, low-income areas, colleges, golfcourses, parks, and some awesome hills, especially at 18 miles. The finish line is staffed by L'Arche Mobile members. Mentally challenged and downs syndrome people hand out the handmade finishers medals. Nothing better. Love Mobile and the marathon committee. Thank You

Nice Fundraiser

The First Light Marathon was a great local fundraiser race. I ran the Mississippi Blues the day before along with a bunch of others. I especially love that there was a special shirt and plaque for the back2back marathon runners. I thought the Expo was easy to find, easy to walk through, I really liked the pasta dinner, and especially liked that it was included in the registration. I thought the entertainment at the finish was wonderful, but would have liked it to continue a bit longer for the back-of-the-pack runners, same with the food. Those trekking the course to the final minutes deserve just as much food and entertainment. Maybe run them 30 minutes more, that's all it would take. The start line could have used a little more excitement, maybe and announcer of something. The course itself went through some rundown neighborhoods and past many eye sores, I didn't like that much. The college campus was great and the bulk of the second half was nice. I lost the course at one point because the person directing traffic didn't wave me in the right direction. I went over a mile out of my way!! I really liked the finish food and party, but there wasn't much vegetarian options. The medals really should be nicer. It's okay that someone makes them, but it should have been high quality over arts-n-crafts type, even if this is a fundraiser. Still though, a good event and I would recommend it to another runner. www.empoweredbyrunning.com

Beware of free pasta dinner at Expo!

This is my first back2back marathon challenge (Jackson and Mobile. I have low expectation, I just want to finish and have a good time. Mobile is not as hilly as Jackson but the second half have some hills especially around mile 18-19. I could have run the race faster but I have to stop on almost of all the porta potties. I think I lost 30 or more minutes with my trip to the porta potties I think my roommate and I both had food poisoning from the free pasta dinner. We both very sick we were unable to sleep the night before the race. The Mobile Health department is currently investigating. From what I heard, lots of other runners were sick as well. It's bad enough to do two marathons in two days but being sick while running is a nightmare. The mobile organizer need to find out what causes lots of runners to be sick from the expo food.

scenic course with great medal for great cause

I live in Mobile and run this marathon every year. The course is outstanding and showcases all the hot spots of Mobile. The race begins and ends in downtown Mobile, runs through the graveyard of 'famous' Mardi Gras figures, runs through University of South Alabama and Springhill college and goes through several neighborhoods. The organization is excellent, water stops are plentiful and well stocked and crowd support is terrific. The medal is awesome and the residents of L'Arche design the medals and present them. The shirts are dri fit and size is perfect. The busy intersections are controlled by cheerful and helpful police. Race is AUsome!!

Great Race - Wonderful Volunteers

My hat's off to the RD and his volunteers. The course was interesting (I really like running thru old towns) and traffic control was outstanding. I don't need spectators all along the course so I was OK when they thinned out. Water stations were well manned and plentiful. It was a great alternative to the mega races. I'll definitely be back!

Down-Home Southern Charm

This race has a great small town feel. I ran it the day after the MS Blues, and feel great about the experience. Pros - It feels good to be part of a race that benefits a worthy organization. - The course is a real test: flat, then hilly, then very hilly, and then flat again probably not a PR course, but a good challenge - Mobile is super convenient. Stayed at the Quality Inn two blocks from the start for $74. Nice to walk out the door and go straight for a run. - Very cool dinner the night before. Fun to meet a mix of locals and hard core 50 state types. - Nice shirt. - Medal made by the beneficiaries of the race. Cons - I hate to complain about volunteers, but some consistency to the water/Gatorade distribution would help. Here's a tip: Gatorade, and then water - Not a lot of spectators were vocal and excited - In this day and age, chip timing would be nice, although I am happy if they saved some money around the edges for the charity

Loved running my hometown marathon!

Awesome experience running my hometown marathon! For years I dodged it because of the hills and difficulty of the course. Now that I've run it I am so glad I did. The spectators are awesome, the course is scenic, and the volunteers and race staff do a great job of putting together a 5-star race. An added bonus is the great cause that the race helps to benefit. Kudos to the entire L'Arche Community!

Feel good race, back 2 back advice

Hospitality abounds. Love my handmade bling, and love the picture & bio on back of my B2B plaque (thanks to Annie, who is a jokester.) fed me warm donuts at mi 18. For.Real. For back2back crowd: protein, compression socks, sleep aid, drain yer blisters good, beer bad after Jackson. The host hotel for mobile race has a tough to find entry and very rude (finger pointing and head bobbing) desk help. Just take a breath and be ready... Hard to shake off after 26 hilly mi, 3.5 hr drive, and thought of doing it again. Shake it off at the pasta dinner. They have pie :)

Great Run, beautiful route

All was wonderful until both my husband and myself became sick from the dinner the night before, we suspect. Many runners along the course was sick as well. It slowed my expected time down by 20 mins. Had to visit too many porta potties. Disappointment for my first half and my husbands first marathon. :-(

Great race for an awesome cause

Did online registration and packet pickup the morning of the race (did not go to the expo). I got to the race about an hour early and was able to park 100 yards from the starting line for $10. Packet pickup was easy, took less than five minutes. The route got a little hilly in the middle of the course. My garmin showed a +/- elevation gain of 719 ft. There was a little bit of everything to look at... downtown, residential neighborhoods, country, college campuses, etc... Crowd support was a little thin in places but when there was a crowd they sure did cheer! There were 20'ish water/aid stations. All had porta-poties, water and Gatorade, about half had fruit. The volunteers were some of the best ive seen at any event, very supportive and nice. Finally, I normally do not place much value on finishers medals but these were handmade by the charity the race benefits (adults with mental disabilities). This medal is one of the few that I place any value on. Great race, go ahead and do it.

Way to go Mobile!!

This marathon far exceeded my expectations and may be the best smaller marathon that I have run! Pros * great medal made by members of benefitting foundation * great course through a variety of areas * great pasta party * friendly city - and I mean friendly ... from cabbies to hotel workers to course monitors and police * recommend Spot of Tea for pancakes * great post race celebration Cons * better distinguish water from gatorade at stops * I'm nott a huge fan of relayers flying by me at mile 22, but at least they were identified as such * weather - out of the race director's control, but it was hot and humid unseasonably so Beware: the course has a series of hills from miles 10-20, but is flat on the ends Mobile is a great smaller city and did their marathon up right!, Way to go!!,

So well organized. Obviously an army of dedicated volunteers. Police presence for traffic control was amazing. Aid stations plentiful. After-party had a nice variety of food and great music. Those over-priced Rock N' Rolls' could learn a thing or two from these folks! Thanks...I enjoyed

Race made convenient!

The Expo was plesant and the pasta feed was really good. We stayed at the Holiday Inn downtown which is recommended because you can just walk out the door to the start in the morning and not worry about parking, that was sweet. It was pretty humid on race day and alot of runners had to slow down early in the race, but its location and nothing you can do about the weather. The water stops were layed out about every other mile or so. I would make a suggestion that they place signs on the tables marking which is water and which is powerade. I at many water stops had difficulty getting what I needed and the volunteers were just holding the cups in their hands and not reaching them out to the runners, so it made it difficult as we had to stop and get the cup out of their hand or from the table. The police dept. did an awsome job at directing the traffic for the runners. Also, be aware, you may get stopped by the train while on the course. A couple of marathoners were stopped for 4 minutes while waiting for the train to pass through. UGG! The finish announcer was so funny. He did an awsome job. Thank you for the experience.

Great Alabama marathon

This was my choice for my Alabama marathon and it did not disappoint. I love the wooden finisher's medal and the fact that it was handmade makes it more special. Course was hilly in the mid part as has been mentioned prior, the humidity made those hills worse for me. Police were out in force at almost every intersection- it was fantastic! Course was great, I enjoyed running through the two colleges and having the students cheering. Hampton Inn was good- asked for a later check out and was refused, asked again on race day and was told I could check out one hour later. That made the difference as I was catching a flight right after. Location of hotel was close to expo and start. Great job Mobile!!

Great, well organized race

The race was very well organized and everyone involved was extremely nice. Packet pickup was easy and the course was very well marked. The fans were enthusiastic, including the police directing traffic, as couple of them voiced encouragement as we ran by. The course was scenic and pretty hilly between miles 10 and 20. There were plenty of water stops manned by enthusiastic volunteers. The host hotel was very convenient to everything. The free shower afterwards at the YMCA was nice as we had an eight hour drive after the race. All in all, a very good marathon that I would recommend to anyone.

A wonderful race in a great town

This is a great race. The packet pickup was simple and well organized. The course was scenic and a good tour of Mobile. It was clearly marked and there was a very high police presence at all of the major (and even some of the minor) intersections. On the busy roads there were plenty of cones and police to direct traffic. The finisher's medal is awesome (one of my favorites) - made by the residents of L'Arche Mobile. For me, the only downside was the high humidity and there were a lot of hills between miles 10 and 20. In addition, the spectators were fairly limited. Overall, an excellent race and I would highly recommend it. My son ran the Kids Race and that was also very well organized and one of the best kids races that he has run. Also, Mobile is an interesting city with lots of things to do and the people are incredibly friendly. I would also recommend the marathon hotel - the Hampton Inn in downtown Mobile; it was excellent. Also, really enjoyed the True Midtown Kitchen for dinner. I cannot imagine a better Alabama marathon than First Light.

Very Friendly Spectators

This was my first marathon in the southern portion of the US. I welcome a race where there are breaks from the spectators as was the case in Mobile but the ones that were there were very friendly and encouraging. The pre race dinner and the unique finisher medals were the other major positives. I would recommend this race to anyone looking to get away from the overcrowded starting lines, obnoxious spectators, and too many bands.

Great race, not great for minimalist runners

This was a very well-done race. However, for those of us who wear minimalist shoes, the gravelly roads were not ideal. My feet are used to running distance in vibrams or sandals, but the rocky roads were a bit too much.

OK Low Key Marathon

I ran this as part of a double marathon weekend because the race partners with the Mississippi Blues Marathon the day before, and both races offered a 20% registration discount. This race is a good low key race. The packet pick up was very organized, and offered a nice free pasta buffet for runners. This is not a chip timed race, no race banners, basically not a lot of frills. The course is very flat the first few miles, then rolling hills in the middle 10 miles, then flat again at the end. Not a lot of spectators, but plenty of volunteers and police support at intersections. I did notice that volunteers were dipping their hands into the water buckets to fill cups, I'm not a fan of that, so I made sure to only get cups that were poured from pitchers, or from the container itself. The race shirt is a cotton shirt, short sleeve for the half and long sleeve for the full, with an option to buy another tech shirt if you wanted. Back to back runners also received a custom made 5x7 plaque by the L'Arche community adult group home residents. The finishers medal is a painted block of wood with a schellacked race sticker with a piece of craft ribbon. Definitely not as flashy as other medals, but the same folks that make the plaques hand make the medals, so they definitely have a deeper meaning. Some of the proceeds from the marathon goes to the group home as well. They also had a really nice after party, with BBQ sandwiches, beans and rice, cole slaw, cookies, and drinks. The humidity was high this year, which made it a little uncomfortable running, but everything else was great.

Terrific race with great course and crowd support!

I have run the first light several times and seem to never get tired of the course. The course is very scenic and full of spectators. The police are excellent at all busy intersections. The course showcases all the attractions of Mobile. The medals are the BEST. They are handmade and presented by the residents of L'Arche. Looking for a GREAT marathon to start the year...this is the ONE!

Excellent race

I completed this race in 2012 and found it to be everything I had anticipated. First it is an excellent value with a reasonable entry fee and both pre and a post race meals. Proceeds are for a good cause. The food at the ending was great. There are two nice hotels across the street from the start and the Expo and two luxury hotels about 3 blocks away. The course is totally flat for the first 10 miles, rolling hills for the next 8, and flat for the last 8. It runs through downtown Mobile, historic areas, into upscale residential neighborhoods, university campuses and back to town. I highly recommend this race if you like nice well run small races. I have no complaints.

I ran this marathon as my second one and my first attempt at qualifying for the Boston Marathon. What a good choice I made. It was well organized, the host hotel was great, the course was challenging. The weather was a little too warm but nothing you can do about that. I had a time that qualified me for Boston. Yeah!!!!

Fantastic value

I did this one the day after doing Jackson MS. Great combo deal. This was a flatter course than Jackson, which was appreciated by the 100+ people doing the back to back. Excellent organization. No chip, but so what, it's a small group. Finish 'medal' was somewhat dissappointing until I 'got' that it involved local folks and wasn't made in China. Now I love this finisher 'medal'. They should take a lesson from Jackson and make the Marathon medal twice the size of the 1/2 marathon medal. Fantastic finish 1/2 mile. Very enthusiastic support and a GREAT party in the park after the run. And how do they put this all on for so little money. BOTH entry fees were less than ONE Rock-N-Roll. And check the comments from the Vegas RNR. YIKES!!! They should be giving refunds. Mobile did a great job. THANKS!

Good race, GREAT cause.

I ran this the day after the Mississippi Blues Marathon, so I arrived kind of tired and worn out. But good southern Alabama hospitality was abundant, and I felt right at home. The expo was small, but friendly and well-organized. Shirts and swag bag stuff was pretty typical, nothing too fancy, but pretty good. The highlight was the plaques for the 'Back 2 Back' runners (Mississippi Saturday, Alabama Sunday). They were individually hand made by the Special Needs adults of L'Arche. They were so wonderful it literally made me tear up. The race starts simple, a group singing of National Anthem, followed by a 'okay, go...'. No chip time, just a starting watch. Others have complained about this but really, doesnt everyone have a GPS watch these days? Course is nice, flat, very scenic. The trees alone bump the course a whole star (yes, the trees. No, I'm not nutty, there are 500 year old sprawling live oaks that are magnificent!). Plus some really nice old southern homes that are architecturally stunning. The finish is in a little park 'downtown.'. You get a cute little handmade medal. Yes, it's the same medal for everyone, full, half, relay, and 5k, but when a young man with Down Syndrome puts it on you and and thanks you for running, its worth it's weight in gold! I found the realization that everyone got the same medal to be special and noteworthy. Here we are running different races but all to support a wonderful charitable organization. Big thumbs up ! Also, if you are a 50-stater, the Back 2 Back is tough, but fun. About a three hour easy drive from Jackson to Mobile.

First Class Race Organization

From arriving in Mobile to leaving after the marathon, everything about this event was great. Good packet pickup; small, but nice expo; delicious pasta dinner. Race start preceded by the National Anthem The entire course had people cheering us on, and Police protection throughout the course. Passing through old and new neighborhoods, parks, golf courses, and two college campuses. Finish line area was really impressive. The clients of L'Arche were handing out the finishers medals. The food and drinks were great. Nothing left out. Looking forward to my 2013 trip to Mobile!

Good race but needs a timing chip!

The First Light Marathon could step it up just a bit to make this a GREAT race... it wouldn't take much. There are several great hotels within blocks of the start/finish line. The course was flat and scenic, like taking a 13.1 mile running tour of Mobile. The cause of the race is noble and humbling. Plus the race medal is a handmade, wooden medal given to you by L'Arche residents (the organization that the race benefits). First Light needs to in invest in a timing chip!!! We would pay extra for the timing chip... I promise. OVERALL: this is a great race and I ran it in conjunction with the MS Blues Half marathon the day before ... you receive a discount if you run both races.

Highly recommend ths race

This was my 31st different marathon. Pros: 1.Ease of everything: packet pick up, walking distance to start/finish, free pasta dinner, etc. 2. Gorgeous course with varied terrain. Only one hill (mile 17) that leaves a mark. 3. Excellent organization! Police everywhere. Water stops spot on. Flawless start (we sang the national anthem in unison), and festive finish area. 4. Great cause. Medal is one of my favorites. Race swag: long sleeved T and drawstring bag nice. 5. The crowd at this race is very laid back: lots of 'doublers' and ultra runners, a lot of conversation on the course amongst runners, very friendly! 6. Only one band on course, a marching band at mile 13, which was fine by me. For the most part, the course is quiet and serene. Cons: 1. Plastic cups at some early water stops: my pet peeve. Hard to drink out of and a menace on the ground. Hate them! 2. Results: problems with them would be resolved if they didn't continue to rely on pull-tags and use chip timing. (Currently their un-offical results don't match up with their awards handed out at the race and I am wondering if I need to mail back my grandmasters award!)

A first-tier event IF a few gaps are filled

The First Light Marathon could be a top-tier event because: * Several great hotels are within blocks of the start/finish line * It has a course with a varying landscape/terrain that winds through historic sites and neighborhoods, and parks and college campus * Excellent police traffic control and chalk markings on the road keep you from getting run over or lost * You run for a great cause and the people who benefit are out there, cheering you on and greeting you at the finish line * Ample and well-staffed water stations/medical stations * A handmade, wooden medal given to you by L'Arche residents It's not a top-tier event because: * No chip timing provided * The marathon and half-marathon medals are exactly the same (folks, it's much harder to run a marathon, and the medals should reflect that) * No bag check was provided * No marked starting line/no organized starting event (e.g., no national anthem, pre-race pep talk, no starting gate). If the race organizers fill in the gaps, this event will swell with participants.

Southern hospitality

Right off the top I must point out that the phrase "Southern hospitality" isn't something someone constructed from a myth. Everyone involved with the race was incredibly pleasant and welcoming. I also highly recommend staying at the Candlewood Suites on Royal. If it's not the closest hotel to the finish line, the difference is negligible... and again, very hospitable folks there. The race is not chip-timed, but even when you include the half-marathoners, it's not a very large event and the starting line stretches all the way across 6 lanes of Government Street, so anyone who cares about his/her time is over the line within seconds. By the time I went back to my room, showered, got dressed and walked back over to race HQ, some results were already posted. I had read comments about the Gatorade-like product that was available along the route, so I stuck to water for every stop but one. Big mistake on that one. The taste, though familiar, is way too strong. It couldn't have been a bad mix because others had written about the same thing. Go with just the water and take an extra gel or two if you think you'll need them. This is not a race for the person who must have a shiny memento. The wooden medals are painted by the members of L'Arche Mobile, a local group that meets the needs of the developmentally disabled. They also design the plaques that go to the age-group winners. The awards are simple and may not appeal to everyone, but they are certainly unique and memorable. The goody bag is an actual drawstring sling sack, with a long-sleeve cotton event T. I chipped in a few extra bucks for a long-sleeve tech shirt with a 10th anniversary logo. That's all you get for stuff, but the draw is the free night-before pasta dinner and free post-race lunch. Granted, the food was very bland for my tastes, but I heard praise from others. The massive setup in the atrium of the government building encourages visiting with your fellow runners.

A "Must Do" Marathon

The couple of things about this race I didn't care for won't be mentioned, because I feel they fall under the category of personal preference. OVERALL, this race is wonderful and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants a great marathon experience. The best part for me was the medal. I am a rehabilitation counselor that has worked with people like those who benefit from L'Arche, and they have a special place in my heart. The fact that they made the medals for us makes it one of the most special in my "collection." Keep up the good work with the marathon and at L'Arche! Thank you!

First Half Marathon

This was my first half marathon, and I am so glad that I chose the First Light! The host hotel was great, and only a block from the race start point! The course was flat and the aid stations were numerous, well stocked and manned by very nice and supportive people! The pre-race pasta meal was great and the t-shirts and backpack were very nice. I did not get to stay for the after-race activities and food due to icing on the roads in the direction that I needed to go to get home. Left as soon as the event was over in order to be able to get home. The medal "woody" was good. It is not big, nor shiny, but it has a lot of soul behind it! I will definitely be at the First Light next year! Great event! The race director, volunteers, host hotel and police department did an excellent job!

WOW! Impressed by the personal touches!

Handmade medals and plaques for doublers - I'm SO IMPRESSED. What a nice surprise. The free dinner was just one more extra perk. I didn't look at the course elevation and was so pleasantly surprised by the L-O-N-G downhill to the finish. I loved that the beneficiaries handed out the medals. I wish I would have been coherent enough to seek out the person who made my plaque. The food looked great, but I had to rush out to the airport. My only request would be an early start, especially since they were advertising the double.

Great Back-to-Back

This was the second marathon of the weekend for me, and everything was great. The registration/packet pickup was well organized with friendly, helpful people. The water stops were overstaffed with enthusiastic volunteers. The intersections had police and volunteers, including a very helpful motorcycle club. The course was pretty flat and had a lot of pretty residential neighborhoods with many people cheering you on. Best of all are the hotels. Stay in one of the historic ones - the Admiral Semmes or the Battle House by Marriot. The employees are great and the buildings are fantastic.

A Very Good Race

This was a very good race. Pros: - great course - well organized - small enough race that I didn't feel claustrophobic Cons: - This race should be timed via chip - it is currently not timed that way. For a Boston qualifier, this is surprising. Again, a very good race.

Great course to end a 2-day marathon weekend!

Fun and friendly. Easy packet pickup, nice trade show, friendly volunteers, wonderful course. After running the Mississippi Blues Marathon the day before, these are all great qualities to pull you through back-to-back races. Also, the inside, sit-down meal was a great touch. It felt awesome to get out of the cold and rest the legs for a bit. :-)

Excellent Race.

A really good course - interesting mix of scenery, neighborhoods and college campuses. A few hills, but nothing difficult. Kudos to those brave volunteers manning the aid stations in freezing temps. The pasta dinner was one of the best in my experience and the post-race was lively and friendly, with good food. The medal (woody) may not be the biggest, shiniest "bling" out there in marathonland, but they are personalized by some of the folks who benefit from our race, and that makes it special to me. To the City of Mobile, you did great! To those contemplating a new-year race with high PR potential? Do this race.

Great small race

I really enjoyed this race. The course definitely showcased some beautiful areas of Mobile. There were a few hills, but nothing too major. I was at the back of the pack and a little lonely after the half marathon split, but that's to be expected. The expo was just right for this race and the spaghetti dinner was a great value (free for entrants, $5 for guests). I would run this race again.

First-Class First Light Mobile Marathon!

I think the RD for this race was one of the nicest, and they sure do include a lot of good stuff for the fee - such as full meals pre- and post-race. The night before the race, getting the packet was simple since it was right across the street from where they were having a very generous pasta and salad dinner. This was also where the race started, and getting there was so easy in the morning. The course itself was fair - pretty flat, and sort of scenic. There were some areas with beautiful estates and nature - such as lakes and water. But there were also some boring stretches on long highways with cars. And there were also the occasional huge hills! The folks on the course were always very kind and encouraging and eager to help the runners. The end was fun, with lots of folks in costume giving out kisses, and neat medals designed individually. There was also warm food and drink at the end, and some music. A nice race for the cost and cause!

Lots of good things about this one.

This is a good, smaller marathon. Good deal on a host hotel; it's easy to get to the start and finish; and there'sa great free pasta dinner. The course isn't easy, but it's varied and interesting. I love the wooden medals. Finish line food and entertainment were great! The race director is very responsive to questions and problems. All in all, a very good marathon. And I love that it has a race-walk category. The volunteers were magnificent, standing out there in the cold. Thanks to them!

Great job, Mobile!

Congratulations to Mobile for putting on a good show in some frigid weather. Southern hospitality? You bet. I hope he reads this: many thanks to the volunteer at the water stop at Mile 15 (teenage fellow, blonde hair, wearing a SF 49ers hooded sweatshirt) who literally sprinted after me for about 100 meters with a cup of water in his hand (yelling, "Sir! Sir! Do you need water?") after I had tried and failed to hydrate at that station. Young man, you did the right thing; I really needed that after 2 hours and 18 minutes of running.

Small, Pleasant, Unusually Cold

I chose Mobile in order to visit a friend in the area and use it as a training pace run. The race was enjoyable, despite the very cold temperatures (which I had hoped to escape by traveling south from the Northeast). I liked the course - particularly the two college campuses and the park, all in the second half. There were very few fans given the weather. I loved the worthy cause this race supports and the unique finisher's medal.

Great value, great course, well organized

I was very impressed all around with the First Light Marathon. It's a great value for $60 with pre-race dinner thrown in. The course was well thought out, providing a tour of old Mobile neighborhoods along with U of South Alabama campus and a some pretty Alabama scenery (swamp included). The course was well managed, with traffic police at every intersection. Despite the frigid 22-degree weather, all water stops were manned appropriately. My only quibble is that the last mile approaching the finish was strangely deserted and the quietest part of the race.

Tough race

If you are looking for a race that skimps on medals, shirts, post-race food, and awards, then this race is for you. The course, while hilly between miles 10-18, can produce a BQ. The spectators are sparse but they are enthusiastic. There were plenty of water stops and they were well manned. This is a good race if you are interested in a decent course and a friendly atmosphere. Just do not expect a whole lot of bang for your buck.

A marathon easy to recommend.

My trio dittos all of the positive comments! We'd like to add that, since we missed the pasta dinner, we ate a couple blocks over at Buck's Pizza and found it to be ideal (you could do a pasta dinner there, too). I was impressed with how the "back stretch" was just as scenic and interesting as the first area. It really helps to have such a nice variety. Miles 13-19 are toughest for me, and in this marathon I actually enjoyed them! Spring Hill Avenue was the only "plain" section, but hey, that's when you're on your way home, and it's flat and a busy part of town, so you feel like you're performing for an audience. All of the police officers and traffic control people were very nice. We never had to use our sunglasses (except for wind perhaps). The only thing I'd have done differently is to have worn running tights and long-sleeved tech instead of my skirt and t-shirt. I was so cold for most of the run and super chilled at the end. Will I ever learn??? Excellent job, Mobile and L'Arche!

Another Great, Small-Field Marathon

This marathon was the second leg of the 3N3 Alabama Marathon Challenge. This was my first Mobile and 12th overall marathon. The course was scenic, with a bad hill at mile 17. The course was safe, with several places with uneven and rough asphalt. Mobile is a great town, where everyone was friendly and helpful. The new Hampton Inn, which is 2 blocks from the start and finish, was first-rate.

I would echo many of the comments from this year's race - especially the positive ones: well-marked course, attentive volunteers (even for back-of- the-packers), etc. I would add that this marathon is an excellent value: low registration fee, long-sleeve tech tee, warm food at the finish line, free (included) pasta dinner the night before, bands at dinner and finish, etc. Mobile is a great, historic city, and the folks are very welcoming to visitors.

Mobile Massage?

My friend and I loved this marathon. Any marathon where you can walk out of your hotel room 10 minutes before the start is a major bonus in our book. Pros: 1. Unique, wooden medal especially made for the runners. 2. Marathon money goes to a great charity. 3. Challenging course/not for wimps. 4. Southern hospitality EVERYWHERE on the course. From expo to finish. 5. Free pasta dinner. 6. Great post-race food. 7. Easy to get to from the airport. Hassle-free. 8. Gave food in the early miles of the course. There was enough for the back-of-the-packers. 9. Great expo giveaways. 10. Nice friendly town. 11. Tech shirts. Cons: 1. When are race directors going to understand that massages should really be saved for the marathoners AND ESPECIALLY the back-of-the-packers? When I finished, the massage people told me they were closing down because they had been out since 7 a.m. The people who truly need the massage are not the ones who ran 13.1 miles, in my opinion. The 26.2-mile runners need it more, and maybe the massage tent shouldn't be sent up until the 3-hour marathoners come in. And marathoners get priority over half marathoners! PLEASE, RDs! I've seen this happen in so many marathons and the first marathon to get it is super smart. 2. Gatorade only please. Although the fluid didn't upset me, it did others. 3. When I got to the expo, they had the wrong size for my tech shirt. At first they said, "Tough." But their Southern hospitality took over and they made sure to correct their mistake and gave me the correct size that I signed up for. Other than these 3 cons, there are more positives than negatives. You should definitely try to run this marathon. It is worth it. And stay at the new Hampton Inn. You can't beat it for the money: Free breakfast, internet and walk to the start!

Great course and welcoming people

Overall, this is a great marathon. I found this to be an ideal loop course: It was pretty; the first ten miles were flat, the last uphill occurs just after 20 miles, and then it is downhill transitioning to a flat finish. Almost all of the course is on asphalt with less than a mile on cement concrete. The traffic control was excellent and the race organization was superb. This is definitely a great, small marathon. Then again, I may be biased by having run my fastest marathon since 1995.

Great Small-Town Race

Great race for a great cause! We stayed at the Radisson Hotel, site of the expo and starting line. It was convenient to stay warm on race morning and be so close to the finish line as well. The smaller field of runners allowed for easy movement throughout the race. The weather was perfect for runners, with clouds and temps in the high 40's. The course was well marked and quite scenic. I enjoyed the massive oak trees and southern neighborhoods. Both college campuses were a hit. All of the water stops and aid stations were well manned. I would recommend this race as a 50-state club member. I won my age group, and getting a Boston Qualifier was the icing on the cake! Way to go, Mobile!

Great organization for small race!!

I have run several small (less than 1,000 total runners) marathons, and Mobile was by far the best organized. The route was excellent, well-marked, and extremely well manned by police and volunteers. Aid stations were frequent and top-notch, with plenty of volunteers. The few spectators that braved a somewhat cold, windy day were very enthusiastic. I have no problem with the "unique" finisher's medal, as the race supports a very good cause. My only negative comments are that the pre- and post-race food was not great and the sports drink used was very sugary and I had to switch to water. Overall, I will likely run this event again in the future.

Great small race

This was my first Mobile Marathon and 5th overall. I've done large marathons like New York and Boston, smaller marathons like Memphis, and now very small marathons like Mobile. First, the weather for the race was great. It was overcast and in the 40s the entire time. The only drawback was the presence of some wind. The course is very scenic. You pass through historic downtown parts and through two colleges and other nice little neighborhoods. The reason I didn't give it a 5 is that there are a couple of long stretches on roads that aren't that pretty, and they only close a lane of traffic, so cars will be passing right near you. I did at least get encouragement from some of the drivers though. Downtown Mobile is flat, and only when you head out do you hit some hills. There are a couple of tough ones, especially one around mile 17, but once you start heading back downtown, it is all flat again. I was running near the front of the race and I actually ran the last 13 miles all by myself since the leaders were several minutes ahead and nowhere in sight, but you do pick up the half-marathon course for the last 4 miles, so I was able to feed off passing some of the slower half marathoners. Organization is wonderful. The course is incredibly well marked on the ground so that you could run it without anyone being there to guide you. Plenty of police to block traffic. Plenty of water stations - 18, I believe. I agree with a couple people that the "Gatorade" drink was not mixed well, but it didn't bother me too much. Post-race, they had pulled pork, red beans and rice, pasta salad, beer, soft drinks and live bands, so there's nothing to complain about there. Fan-wise, the ones that are on the course are great and supportive. My favorite were the St. Paul's cheerleaders with their "L-E-T-S-G-O... LET'S GO!" cheer. The only problem is that you won't see too many fans most of the race. There was a relay, so at the relay spots on the course you got nice support from everyone waiting. Overall, running a well run marathon on a pretty nice course featuring great weather more than makes up for the lack of runners and spectators. I'd definitely do it again.

NICE!!

I have no complaints... it is all good! For a five-hour marathoner like myself, it can be lonely at times, but with a water stop every mile or so, it made it easy. I have never seen such a well marked course with lots of traffic control along the way. NICE JOB, MOBILE!

Very good race

I never got tired of looking at the scenery. Lots of water and potties. Volunteers were great!! The only negative is the sports drink. No one had ever heard of it much less trained with it. Please, race directors, stick with Gatorade or PowerAde. These are what runners train with. Over all, this was a wonderful small race and I would recommend it!

Lovely, interesting, Southern course

This was a well-organized, delightful marathon. The course is interesting and quite beautiful, traversing many interesting, old, Southern neighborhoods parks, boulevards and college campuses. There are a few rolling hills in the middle, but it's mostly flat. The weather was perfect for a January marathon - in the cool 40s. There was a free pasta-load dinner in the city hall atrium and a welcome BBQ feed at the end. The shirts were good. The "unique wooden medals" - hand-decorated by the challenged children whom the race sponsors - were memorable (though they might disappoint some). Mobile is an interesting town with good food and a surprising amount to see. (I brought my son, and we had fun exploring nearby parts of Mississippi and Florida, as well as Alabama.)

Great Race

I really enjoyed Mobile. Nice town with very friendly people and a very well organized race. The course has just enough hills in the middle of the race but nothing too bad. The first half and the last 6 miles are very flat. The host hotel was awesome, allowing for an early check-in and a late check-out. The race starts just a few yards down the street from the hotel. The temperature was almost perfect throughout the race, but the wind did make for some cold hands. That was my fault, as I should have worn gloves. The spectators were few but very supportive. I would highly recommend this marathon. Thanks, Mobile, for a good time.

Great small-town race!

Great small-town race. Good weather, beautiful course and it is all for a wonderful cause. Volunteers were great. Water stops were frequent and well staffed/stocked. Port-o-let at every water station! Start and finish are close to hotel. Homemade wooden medal is unique. Finish at the park with live band, free massage and food/beer. If you are looking for a "big race" feel, this is not the race for you. But if prefer a small, well-run race, good organization and a beautiful course, seriously consider this one. I'll be back. Chip timing would be nice.

A diamond in the rough!!! And for a great cause.

This was a race I almost didn't run. Boy, am I glad I did. This is a scenic route through a beautiful little, oak tree-lined Southern town. There are a few hills that make this a fair challenge to anyone. The organization was pretty good except that no one knew exactly where the starting line was (no big deal). The volunteers were fantastic!!! There were ample port-o-potties (always a concern for runners), the mile markers were good, and there were more than enough water stops. Did I say the volunteers were great?!!! At the finish line there is a picnic-like atmosphere in a park, complete with a live band. Oh, and the medal. If you just look at it, you think it is a cheap wooden circle. But when you find out who made it with their own bare hands and their hearts and souls, it is a medal that I am honored and humbled to have been able to earn. L'Arche of Mobile, Alabama ROCKS!!!

Superb Event

This is a race I didn't sign up for until two weeks prior to race day and I'm glad I ran it (BQ/PR). This is a great race for a great cause. For me a race comes down to organization and this race did not disappoint. Fans? If you need fan support then you need to find a bigger race or maybe running is not for you (if you need fan support to run). But the fans that were out were awesome. Medals? The medal is unique and while it doesn't have the "bling" of other races it is still a special moment when you are presented the medal at the finish line. It will go next to my other unique medals. Thanks!

Great Small Marathon

This was my 13th marathon and I specifically target small events. It was incredibly well organized for a small marathon. The course was well marked, and there were ample course volunteers who gave good directions. Nearly every intersection had a volunteer/police stopping traffic. The water stops were well staffed and helpful. I loved the scenic course that wove through historic parts of the community and 2 college campuses. The race director and race committee have obviously put a lot of time and effort into this event. It is a first-class event. I highly recommend this race if you enjoy small, well organized, and scenic. Most of all, I appreciate the purpose of this marathon. The mission behind supporting individuals with disabilities is commendable. I was moved by the beautiful handmade medals and being handed my medal by a person with a disability. What a phenomenal way to connect with the community. Excellent work!

A Pleasant Winter Marathon

This was a marathon with a great cause. The "medal" was actually a handmade, wooden medallion, and was very appropriate. The host hotel was accommodating. There was no banner at the start line, nor was there an electronic chip-type timing system. Not a big deal though. And the timing official did a great job at the finish line. The course was very well marked, and turns were appropriately staffed. The aid/water stations were appropriately spaced and stocked with an abundance of fluids and carb food items, and staffed with very friendly volunteers. There was a small hill westbound, crossing over I-65, and then a few more hills, ending around mile 18. The last hill looked worse than it was. At one point, the course traversed the University of Southern Alabama, where Calvin and Hobbes are contending for a basketball! The pre-competition pasta dinner had great food, and it was free. The food at the finish line was also well received - sloppy joe/BBQ sandwiches and hot soup, coffee and other beverages. And the finish was close to the host hotel, which was great. Thanks for a great event!

HOORAY FOR MOBILE!!!!

I had low expectations for this marathon. I usually run much larger races in big cities, so I expected a small race in a smaller city to be a bit spartan. I was very pleasantly surprised: 1. Very well organized. 2. Lots of water/aid stations, and each was well manned. 3. Port-o-potties at EVERY water stop!! (I've never seen that before!) 4. Beautiful course through lovely old neighborhoods and two college campuses. 5. Not many fans, but the ones that were out were enthusiastic!! I was handed bananas, M&Ms, and a Twix bar, all by families out in their front yards cheering. 6. All crossings and turns were well manned by police and volunteers. 7. Excellent post-race meal and music on beautiful Bienville Square. 8. L'Arche Mobile is the most worthy of causes. CONS? Can't think of many: 1. Why was there a huge Auburn flag flying over the finish line? 2. There was no speech or pep talk before the race. As a result, the starting gun went off and startled everyone and there was a few seconds of hesitation before we started running. LOL!! 3. Get rid of the Auburn flag flying over the finish line. 4. The course is lonely and deserted on the USA campus. 5. They really need to get rid of the Auburn flag at the finish line. 6. Skip the Radisson and stay at the Riverview or the Battle House. 7. GET RID OF THE BARN FLAG AT THE FINISH LINE!! I will be back next year!! And if the Auburn flag is flying at the finish line, I'm gonna tear it down!!

Beautiful marathon, well run

This was not a real successful marathon for me personally, and I usually feel better about races I run well... but there were a lot of things I really liked about this marathon. I got into the host hotel just days before the race. I decided to run the full instead of the half because the weather forecast was good, and it was no problem to change the day before the race. There were 18 water stops... just right, so you don't have to think about hydrating (just take some every stop). It is a beautiful marathon. It is great value, inexpensive. There was no chip timing, but the field was small enough that it would not have cost anyone over a minute, probably. I was disappointed in my result. I ran with a heart rate monitor for the first time. I had run Huntsville and bonked in the humidity, so I wanted to keep my heart rate at 150-155, since I had not had much recovery time. The hills are not bad, but they go on for a long time and my heart rate went to 165 and did not go down much, even with slowing down... so I bonked at mile 22. So the hills can be quite a factor. Overall I feel good about the marathon, and it is run very well.

wonderful race!

Although this was my first marathon, I will definitely do it again next year! Everything about this race was well organized and user friendly. The starting location was right off the interstate, which made it easy for me to get to because I didn't stay overnight. There were no long lines of runners waiting for their pre-race packs. I got my shirt and bib within 5 minutes after arriving. The race started on time, and the course was beautiful. It was clearly marked, and I was able run uninterrupted the whole way. There were numerous water stations and portable toilets, and the spectators were very friendly! Wonderful race!

Not too bad the second time around.

This was my second time running the full marathon in Mobile and my eighth marathon total. First Light was also my first marathon ever back in 2007 and the second time around in 2008 was even better. I truly enjoyed the running community of Mobile, Alabama. The pre-race pasta meal at the Museum of Mobile was a classy touch and I hope they continue this for the following years. The pre-race meal and the bonding amongst runners in the cozy family-style tables was the highlight of the weekend events. Conditions were perfect for running in this age of global warming. Cool temperatures, shaded trees along the course and a sunny day all added to my improvement from last year's race by over 8 minutes. The size of the race lent itself to personal recognition of other runners from previous races. I saw at least 4 other runners who ran with me during the inaigural Mississippi Blues Marathon just 8 days before. If you want a family style marathon, First Light is the race for you. If you enjoy anonymity, stick with the bigger races. Although the course and hills were the same as last year, it wasn't as intimidating the second time around. This was the most fun I've had at a race to date - even more fun than I had last year. And when you are presented at the finish line with your medal - by the residents of the cause you're running for - you will see what a spectacular race this is. I would come out every year for this event if I could.

Really Nice Marathon

Organization was excellent, especially for a small marathon. Ample water stations with Gatorade and extras (bananas, oranges, and more). Registration, packet pickup, etc. were flawless. Host hotel was great and very convenient. Course was beautiful. Even though I knew about the hills, I still wasn't expecting them to be all they were... my problem! Still they weren't all that bad. Mobile is a wonderful town to visit and the course covers many of the highlights. Come for the beauty and the history! You won't be disappointed! Course management was super. Police and volunteers keeps the course safe. Water station volunteers were wonderful and VERY supportive. Thank you all!! You rock! Pre-race pasta dinner and the post-race meal and entertainment were exceptional. I loved everything. I have mixed emotions about the "medal" given out. Primarily I appreciate the efforts of the L'Arche group that made them. Quite frankly, every other marathon could learn something from the First Light Marathon organizers about focusing an event on the charity benefiting. Still, I've got to admit, I was somewhat disappointed by the medal... doesn't speak very well of me! Spectators were almost non-existent.... I hope Mobile will begin really supporting this event; it really has great potential, and Mobile greatly benefits from the event (and especially L'Arche, the organization for with the event is conducted). Come on, Mobile!! Overall this is a wonderful event, especially for a small marathon. It's a long trip for me, but I'll return if I can. The entry fee is really too low... a GREAT deal!!

This was a good race in an interesting city.

The race course was fast, well marked and staffed by plenty of policemen controlling the traffic. Wish part of the run was by the water and where the half splits off it should be better marked. Will do next year; I want to see more of the city and visit the museums.

Good Race, Good Organization for a Good Cause!

I would definitely recommend this race to anyone who's looking for a fun race, for a really worthy cause! The organization was good, the host hotel was very accommodating and the proximity from the hotel to everything was very convenient. The free pre-race pasta dinner was good. The race course was 70-80% shaded, with the start temp around 45 and later temps in the 60's. A few hills to deal with but nothing like what I expected, based upon my understanding of the elevation chart. Finally, the finisher's medal may not be one of great value, when viewed from a monetary standpoint, but when viewed from the standpoint of "what this race is all about," it's worth more than most any medal you can achieve! Thanks for a great weekend!

My First Race - Great Experience

The race was well organized, well supported and actually fun to run (I say this after it's over}. The hills aren't as bad as advertised and the last five miles are a flat-out dash back to downtown Mobile. The post-race party included free massages, which were much appreciated. As the title to this commentary indicates, this was my first race but I am hard-pressed to think of anything that could have made it better. Impressive community support.

Outstanding "small-town" feel

This was my 3rd marathon in as many states. I was really impressed by, as small as it was, the organization, course marking and set up. The pre- and post- race pasta meal was free for entrants. Because it was small (roughly 1500 including half entrants), the parking was a non-issue. Overall, I was really impressed by the event and would recommend it to others. The hills from mile 11-16 seemed an issue when you were ACTUALLY climbing them, but after you topped them, eh, they weren't that bad - overrated.

Great Southern Marathon!

I just got my application for the 2008 race and it reminded me how much I have enjoyed this race for the past 3 years. It's a beautiful course through the azalea -lined streets of Mobile and finishes under the shade of old live oaks in a beautiful park, made all the better by the Cajun food and music on a warm day in January in the south! The best part of the race is being presented with the handmade finisher's medallion by one of the members of the L'Arche community in Mobile, which is the reason I started running this race, and always makes me feel wimpy for dreading "the hill" at mile 18. I've run 50 marathons all over this country and other countries, and First Light will always be one of my favorites.

WHAT A SUNNY MOBILE MARATHON!

I did it, did it, did it! I also broke 6 hours! If you asked me at mile 20 if I had a chance, I would have said, "NO WAY." Wonderful aid stations! Lots of encouragement! Wish there was more shade in the latter stages. Got kind of hot in the last hour, but staying wet helped the cooling process. The blisters have healed. It was the best way to add Alabama! I would recommend adding the Champion Chip though.

Fair Marathon

This was a so-so marathon. The scenery was ok. There were parts when you were on fairly busy roads, they had them blocked off, but I would just prefer to be running on smaller roads. However, I must say they did a great job directing traffic. There were cops at intersections and had everything under control. One more big thing... watch out for miles 12-18. The first 12 miles were pretty flat, then... wham. They weren't terrible, but when your legs are shot, they sort of are! And that is when it got windy, too. But, for a January marathon, the weather was good. I ran in short sleeves and shorts... what more can you ask for? The water stops were good and well manned. It was a decent marathon to run, don't get me wrong, but I would say there are better ones out there. ... and watch for those middle couple of miles! And the pasta dinner wasn't very good. I ended up eating some more stuff later because I was still hungry and needed the fuel for the morning.

Hometown marathon; very friendly

Coming from New York I had to get used to the "humps and lumps" (speed bumps)on many of the roads... and the hill by the firehouse at mile 18 on a 75-degree day was a challenge. Course ran through two colleges and past many mansions and moss trees. There were 384 finishers to the marathon and many for the half and relay teams. The water/sports drink stations were GREAT, with friendly people telling us, "You all are doing GREAT." Marathon, pasta dinner, and the finish line all within walking distance of each other. Oh, and the host hotel (Radisson). GREAT for us 50-state, out-of-towners. Directions floured on pavement as well as signs on poles, so you can't get lost if you are a back-of-the-pack marathoner. There is a 7-hour limit - very sweet. Plaques and medals made by The L'Arche community of handicapped people, which is the charity the race benefits. This is on Martin Luther King Weekend, so many of the shops and restaurants are closed. You should tour the USS Alabama - there's a free trolley.

MY MOST TOUCHING MARATHON

L'Arche Mobile organizes and benefits from this race. I did not realize what this meant until I sat, very tired, winded, and nauseated from the heat, on a bench in the lovely park after the race and watched two ladies sitting across from me. The black lady was obviously handicapped and she was being spoonfed by an older white lady. This is L'Arche Mobile, a community of mentally handicapped adults and their caregivers who live together. Often it's the first time that these mentally handicapped people experience life outside an institution. I walked over to the ladies and congratulated them, telling them how much I was moved by their love and dedication. This also made me very grateful for my being able to run a marathon. There were others from this community who mingled with the runners. They made the wooden medallions and they made the awards, one of which I was fortunate to win. I will treasure it. The temperature was hot (60 at the start and about 70 at the finish) and took its toll on this Yankee. The pre-race pasta dinner was the best I ever had and the post-race party was absolutely wonderful. I also enjoyed the route through the college campuses and under huge Spanish oaks draping the streets. But I will never forget the two ladies at the end.

A Jewel!

Husband ran the full marathon, I ran the half. This may be the best marked course I've ever been on anywhere. Pretty scenery, cheerful volunteers, well controlled traffic, adequate number of well-stocked aid stations made the course pretty easy to navigate. The half is pretty flat, the marathon has some hills. The weather this year (2007) was really nice (60F and cloudy at the start, about 70F and sunny at the finish). The pre-race dinner was fine, the post-race party had a lot more food and entertainment than most I've attended, and everything was included in a very reasonable entry fee. The expo is small but they did have caps and other First Light Marathon logo'ed merchandise for sale, which is all I really wanted, so I thought it was fine. They made us feel like they were glad we came.

Nice course, warm day, lots of water stops.

The First Light Marathon is a relatively small race that does it's best to raise money for a good cause. The course is relatively flat for the first and last 6 miles. The middle part of the race has a number of hills that make it more interesting without killing you. It was an unusually warm day with a start in the upper 60's and a finish in the 70's. For a Minnesotan like me, this made it a little tougher, but as there were 17 water stops, I didn't end up with too many excuses. Congratulations, Mobile.

These people know how to do it!

I ran this race in 2002 and found that the race director and staff had done some positive "tweaking" since that time. It is a very beautiful course for an urban marathon, running mostly through prime residential areas and college campuses. Plenty of water and food on the course. Police were the best at keeping things safe and smooth. The course was a nice mixture of pancake-flat sections and modest hills. It would be a good course for a pretty fast time. Not a lot of crowds along the course, but lots of residents were out in their yard, sincerely cheering for each of us as we passed by! In 2007 we had a nice day, but it was warm. The course has a lot of shade on it so it was not too bad. The medals are handmade by the residents of the benefitting charity and presented to you by the same. Post-event food was much improved... I had all I could handle! I read the comments below about the stroller not being allowed. Usually races are pretty clear about that for the safety of everyone. I don't hold the race director responsible for anything that was explained clearly. Good job, Mobile!

I was blown away by how well the marathon was organized (like a well oiled machine). The course was beautiful. The day was perfect. I would recommend this marathon without reservations. I would rank this marathon on my list of top three favorite marathons to run 1. Napa Valley 2. Big Sur 3. First Light Marathon. Thanks so much for giving us such a great event.

Great First-Marathon Experience.

A challenging and scenic race. The course takes you through the streets of some of the most beautiful historic homes I've ever seen. The streets along the first five miles were covered with large oak trees whose limbs were so large that they provided shade across the entire roadway. There was plenty of scenery at the beginning and the finish line ended in the downtown district. The number of runners was large enough to find a pacing partner but small enough to enjoy some solitude. This is not a course for trying to set a PR. The mild Southern winter temperatures started off in the 60's and ended in the mid-70's. The course was flat during the first 10 miles with three ascents and descents in between miles 10 to 20, which felt more challenging with each hill tackled. The water tower at Springhill (mile 18) marked the highpoint and toughest climb. Fans were terrific given the small size of this race. There were plenty, even through some of the silent stretches of the race. They really kept me motivated through my first marathon. The pre-race and post-race meals were well worth the price of admission. My only complaint was there were no bananas or oranges at the end of the race but pulled pork, cole slaw, spaghetti and beer were plentiful.

Had some troubles during the race

I walked with a child who rode in the stroller. She has mild celebral palsy and fetal alcohol syndrome. I was told twice by police that I had to use the sidewalk, even though we were at the 9-mile marker and ahead of the balloon lady. I would have to stop and explain to them why she was in the stroller. They need to be aware that sometimes there will be a stroller in the race and it was for a good reason.

Small-town type

Mostly locals. Met some great people. Have run the 1/2 twice and the full once. Interesting course. Last six miles are on a slight downhill grade. This is good. The post-race extravaganza is a bit spartan. Guess the sponsors in Mobile do not kow what a market marathoners can be. I shall return.

Great, Small Race!

First marathon in Alabama. I really enjoyed the race. The weather couldn't be better. Cold and clear. Course had few hills but was mostly flat. A lot of fried chicken restaurents on the course - I think four Popeye's, one KFC and one Church's? Too bad they were closed. I'm looking forward to running it again next year. Better-tasting sport drink would be nice. Love the award! Thank you!

good marathon, will repeat again

I have run the half marathon 2-3 times and the full marathon twice. It is good for me, because it involves no travel (it is in my home town). PR'd at last year's marathon by 13 minutes. Course mostly flat, with two hills thrown it. Crowds good, but not huge. Good course support. Great job by the police directing traffic.

Great first marathon!

This was my first race and first marathon. I chose it because it was in my home town and was a small field. The course seemed very flat and fast. There were minimal turns (given the area). There is only one really large hill. I turned in a 3:29, which was much faster than I expected. I can't imagine a better organized race. Every detail seemed to be taken care of. Water stops ever 1.5 miles. Volunteers at ever turn to keep you headed the right way. Traffic was handled beautifully. The start and finish are only a few blocks away with plenty of parking. There were more spectators that I expected. The only (small) problem I could mention is the Gatorade is not really Gatorade; it's a local mix. The director of the race told me I could get a sample before the race if I wished, but I just risked it.

Great experience

This was my 5th marathon... and it was a great experience. The weather was somewhat cold, but no rain. The course ran through beautiful garden districts and was easy to follow and well marked. There was only one really tough hill at mile 18. The police support was great... thanks! The aid stations were well staffed. The hotel had great accommodations, and the start was right outside the hotel... very convenient! I will recommend this marathon to friends. A very friendly group!

Observations from a Northern Runner

The First Light Marathon is a very good marathon. It's small with only about 250 marathoners and about that many half-marathoners at the same start. Don't expect a lot of company and spectators, but I learned how much I enjoy a smaller marathon where I can focus on the race itself. The organization was great. Marty, the RD, was always prompt about returning my emails. I was surprised by how well this event went since I was an early register and paid only $35 for the race, pre-race meal, post-race meal, shirt, medal and very good course support. There's no reason this race won't grow as more people learn about it. The course itself was good. The first 10 miles are flat. The next 10 miles have some hills but they are all (including the one at mile 18) manageable. That's coming from a 240+ lb runner. The last 10K works its way back to the original elevation. This was my 7th marathon and I improved my PR by 4 minutes. We lucked out this year with ideal weather, especially for those of us from the northern states. I believe it was about 37 degrees at the start and maybe low 50's at the end. I doubt the wind even made it up to 5 mph. Having made my first trip to the Deep South, I was pleased to discover the southern hospitality of so many people, both runners and non-runners alike. I am still fairly new in my quest for a marathon in all 50 states so I don't know when I'll be back to Mobile, but I highly recommend this one.

a wonderful race on a gorgeous course

The weather was perfect and so was everything else about this race. Mobile's a lovely city, and the course shows it off nicely. Race organization was excellent, traffic control excellent, the course well-marked, the volunteers helpful: Full marks for everyone. If you're used to Central Park, the hills aren't too much. AND I wound up with a PR, so what's not to like?

VERY LONELY, ESPECIALLY AT THE END

I knew from the previous year's comments that this was not going to be a big spectator course, but there was absolutely no one out there rooting for you. The volunteers at the water stops, and the policemen were very friendly. The course was very scenic in the beginning, very hilly in the middle, and pretty bad at the end. We were running on a 4-lane highway for about 5 miles - the last 5 miles, where I really needed something to keep my mind off of my pain. This could be a GREAT marathon, with a some more support from the city, and a change in the last 5 miles.

Well run race

I ran the 2006 marathon. This was my 8th marathon and would run it again. The staff was wonderful, the course was very scenic. I think they had all of the police from all of Alabama out on the course. The course was well marked with volunteers at every corner. There were a few hills but nothing you can't train for. The weather was perfect. They had food and a band playing at the end. I would recommend this race.

This is a wonderful race.

Mobile is a beautiful city, and long stretches of this course are very pretty, but for me, the distinctive element in this race was the fantastic people of Mobile. From the folks at the water stops, to the volunteers directing traffic, to the race organizers themselves, I found everyone to be extremely friendly and helpful, and eager to make this an all-around great experience for the runners. I would recommend this race to anyone, and would run it again. Beware that hill at 18 though - holy cow!

A Great Way to Start the New Year

Though this is small marathon, it had the feel of a big-time race. I thought it was realy a neat touch how the City of Mobile erected permanent street signs to mark each turn and at each mile. The was varied and interesting. Until I ran this race I never knew Mobile was such an intresting and scenic town. The price, especially for those who registered early, was wonderful. I have paid $40 more to enter some marathons and have not received so much back as I got at this race. This definitely is a marathon worth running.

Good course, hot! Great fans!

This is my 6th marathon and the first I have run in my hometown. It is also the smallest marathon I have run. It was almost incredible. The only bad thing is about 3 miles (20-23) that are in the less-than-fabulous part of town. This keeps the fans away and there is little to recommend this part of the race. Other than that, great water stops and fans and very well organized. Although, I would highly recommend the half other than the whole. It was 75 degrees in Mobile that day and -5 where I live in Montana. Stifling but great for January...

Hat's off to a great marathon

I don't think a marathon could be any better organized than Mobile's. For a small marathon there were so many folks helping out. I found all aspects of the marathon running smoothly, from the packet pick-up to the post-race meal. What attracted me was the value. For $35, we got a pre- and post-race meal and concert, a great long-sleeve shirt and medal. I don't know how they pulled it off and managed to give some money to charity! There were so many folks on the course ensuring the roads were traffic free and ensuring the runners made all the right turns. Everyone was very helpful and friendly. Traffic was not an issue and there was no chance of making a wrong turn on the course. Pre- and post-race meals were excellent and both provided a live band. For a small town marathon, crowd support was minimal, but that is to be expected. Overall, I would recommend this race to everyone.

Tough course but nice meals.

The course gets hilly about mile 11 with a real tough one at 18. From 20 to finish, it's flat, but boring with few spectators. Biggest complaint: No split times. Free pre-race and post-race meals are good, but music is so loud it is hard to talk. Start is close to hotel, and finish is just a few blocks away. There was no expo in 2003. No state records from the race have been posted to the State Record Site six months after the 2003 race.

Good way to top off the year

I have run the Mobile Marathon since its beginning three years ago. A perfect way to end the year. First Light was #18 for the year. Yes, I am addicted... love the challange of 26.2 miles, the scenery and the people who come from all over the US and the world. This year didn't seem to have as many spectators, but volunteers were always cheerful. A nice course with a few hills and one BIG one. The guys at the fire station at the top of the hill always make me smile. If you happen to find yourself 'down South' during the holidays, make sure you run this one!

A great race for beginners

This was my first marathon, the course was great and it will challenge you between miles 12-20. Fan support was low; however the race workers were incredibly supportive. However, I think the aid stations could be placed in more predictable locations, e.g. every two miles. Overall this was a great confidence booster for me!

Wonderful experience in Mobile

My family came down to run this marathon knowing it was a smaller marathon. The bathroom stops, the water stations, the Mobile Police Department and motorcycle club who helped monitor traffic were all fantastic. The course is set over the historic district, USA campus, and a park for 21 miles. I thought it was a busy course. Lots to see, great way to see Mobile. The last 5 miles were a letdown as far as scenery, but the course is well laid out. The hills were not as bad as I was told they would be. My only suggestion would be to add more vendors to the packet pickup and convention. We went with money in our hands looking to buy, but there weren't any clothes to purchase. The bands at the end were good, but they kept encouraging us to dance?!?! Obviously they hadn't run the marathon. This is a marathon everyone should run and support. Thanks for the unique weekend.

Another good one!

This is the third time I have run this marathon... I have yet to be disappointed. I would love to see this one grow more and more each year. A great way to end the year (18 for 2003). Not as many spectators this year as previous years, but that doesn't matter. The first half of the course is flat, but the second half has some major hills. Seems the hills always get me. The last 5 miles is pretty boring, but by that time, I know it will soon be over. I look forward to running this course again next year.

I was very happy!

After reading earlier comments, I was a bit apprehensive about the race. Put those fears to rest. For the price, I have yet to find amenities like those at Mobile. A pre-race and post-race meal, a free concert, ample aid stations, complementary massages, and a FREE beer tent--for only $35 (if you register early). My thanks to the folks in Mobile for a great time!

flat-->HILLY-->flat

Great race. Really wasn't that difficult until you hit mile 10 or so, then you got on the roller coaster. The midpart was almost painfully hilly (downhills too steep for my taste). Flattened out again around mile 21 or so, thank goodness. Overall great race and hope my schedule will allow it 12/04.

They went out of their way for me!!!

I was the last one to finish.... and EVERYONE was GREAT. The middle of the race is up in the hills, and there are few spectators there... but in town it was nice!!

Great potential

Traveled back to my hometown for this race. Love the downtown views--race would benefit from more of the course having such beautiful scenery. Lots of water stops with sports drink at each and gels, fruit at some. Smiling volunteers. Major need for improvement in getting the spectators to the race and more entertainment along the route. Hope the race grows into the special event it could become.

Great small marathon

If you come to this marathon expecting huge crowds of spectators, stay home. But if you enjoy a small marathon with a running start (no packed starting line), a relaxed run and some beautiful southern scenery this is for you. I ran the inagural run last year also and plan on making this marathon a yearly event. The course does wind around some and a few parts are boring, but the moss draped oaks, parks, and neighborhoods make up for them. There are only a couple 'bad' hills otherwise the course is fairly flat. I had a real laugh when a group of a couple dozen geese crossed in front front of me while going through one of the parks. After the race I heard a few other people mentioning them and everyone thought it was a real highlight. It seemed there were fewer spectators this year than last, but everyone was friendly and cheered. The water stops were OK, but only one had any gel and they were all out when I passed. I thought the registration fee was a little high (unless you register early) for not having more things such as gel, etc. along the course. There were several stops that had fruit, though which was nice. As last year the finisher medallions were made by the L'Arche Foundation and are not very impressive, but I know their clients put a lot of effort and pride into making them. All in all a great job and a marathon I expect to see growing more and more as the years pass.

GLAD I MADE THE TRIP

We drove from Chicago for a warm weather winter race. I was ill and almost did not make this race, however the race director offered to refund my entry fee, which does not happen at big events. The course was scenic and challenging with few spectators. The only down side was the course map did not state 'not completely driveable' and during a review of the course we ended up getting lost. Great event which benefits awesome cause. So if you're pursuing all 50 states mark this one for AL or if you want a smaller race which you get a good return for your dollar go to this race. The host hotel was only $55/night for downtown Radisson.

Nice course, well organized, & great cause

This is a well organized race with a great course through the historic district, colleges, parks and downtown. It is a friendly event to walkers and also includes a half marathon course. It contributes to a great cause, the L'Arche-Mobile Foundation. After finishing you receive a nice medallion hand made by the students of the Foundation. The only weak point is the spectators lining the course. They were very very sparce. A suggestion for next year.... advertise more the event. It is worth, and you could get a lot of more people running for a great cause and looking for a PR.

Beautiful Course & a Worthy Cause

Pre-race pasta dinner was great, with a live band and good food. Course contained amazingly beautiful homes set against magnificent oaks. Weather was perfect, and the spectators along the way were very warm/friendly. Some portions of the course were not traffic controlled, but markings on the road (using flour) were clear. Handicapped folks at the finish line handed out the home-made medals, and helped me appreciate the goal of the event. Unmanned self-serve beer station at the finish line was unique, but otherwise this was a very well run event. Needs more local media support.

A Small Town Race

Marathon course is good for 10 miles and then it turned odd. We were looping around parks, running on uneven streets and dodging potholes in the road. The mile markers were not well placed and no one seemed to know where we were on the course. There were four time clocks on the course which included the end. Spectators were scarce. I went two miles without seeing one spectator and when you did see them, they had no idea if they were supposed to stare at you or cheer for you. On the upside, the host hotel was great.

I hope it improves in 2002.

Too few water stops. Sparce spectator support for most sections of the race. The packet pickup was changed at the last moment (about 6 blocks) and not all runners were notified in time. No beer at the finish line for the slow runners.

Superb runner and walker-friendly marathon!!!

2002 was a fantastic debut for the First Light Marathon. The course is interesting, very well-marked with enough hills to be 'challenging' without being overly so. Crowds were enthusiastic, although there were a number of fan-free stretches. With an 8-hour time limit and racewalk awards, Mobile is as friendly to walkers as it is to runners.

First year bugs need to be worked out

The course was well marked, yet the hill at the 18 mile marker was a bear. Not very many stations and fruit was no where to be found. Spectators very sparce the last ten miles. The food was four blocks from the finish line. Beer was available at the finish. Great cause, organizers were very open to suggestions and helpful hints. Should be much better in 2002!

Excellent Race!!!

Most importantly, this race contributed to a worthy organization, L'Arche-Mobile. The course was great with different looks of the host city including neighborhoods, colleges, parks and downtown. Fan support was way above what I had expected. The finishers awards were most special since they were made by L'Arche-Mobile residents (assuming the previous comment is correct). L'Arche-Mobile and the City of Mobile should be proud. One note of possible improvement would be to increase the number of water stops. Congrats on a great race!!

Great Inaugural Marathon

The course covered beautiful residential neighborhoods still decorated for the holidays, then went through both the University of South Alabama and Spring Hill College. It did prove that there are some hills in Mobile but they were necessary to cover the different areas. I think this marathon will become very popular due to the time of the year and the great spectators and organization.

Great Organization, Great Course, Great Awards

The First Light Mobile, AL Marathon was a winner from start to finish. There was online confirmation of your registration (even for people who mailed in their registration). The course was very well marked with large chalk/flour arrows at every corner plus mile markers on sign posts as well as chalk/flour markings on the road. The course was also well coned where necessary to keep car traffic in their own lanes coupled with outstanding police suuport. The aid stations were good if a bit far apart (about every 2.5 miles). The crowds were wonderful and supportive, many staying out for six hours plus to cheer everyone toward the finish. The finisher's medallions were each individually hand made by the L'Arche Mobile Foundation students, the post-race celebration included a ton of food and plenty of seating, and the awards (again individually hand made by the L'Arche Mobile Foundation) went ten deep overall, ten deep for Masters, five deep for Grand Masters, and very deep for age-groupers. An outstanding race.

1st time its been done but it has the potential

Mobile has a pretty nice size running community and I'm sure there will be a fairly large group of them running. I live in the midtown area and see lots of runners training on some of our oak covered streets... Mobile in late Dec. can be extreme in both directions... hot or cold... the run itself will be very nice. A long warmup of about 8 miles then up a half mile hill then rolling hills then back up another half mile hill at about 18 and about 8 miles downhill back into the downtown finishing area... it should be great...
