I loved this marathon, my first

The DC Marathon was my first, and I loved everything about it. I just went online to find out when I could run it again--hoping last year's cancellation was a one-time unfortunate event--and see that it's cancelled again! How sad. I really hope it comes back somehow. I'll sign any petition to help. Mary Hanson

Don't let the DC Marathon die.

I just found out that the DC Marathon will not be held. I ran the first one, and was entered in the second. It was a really nice marathon: great views, and it was a thrill running in the capital of the greatest country in the world. I got into the Marine Corps due to the cancellation (way to go MARINES). I really hope that someone keeps this marathon alive. DC needs a marathon of its own, and the first year crowd of almost 10,000 runners proves that.

Don't Count on This Event for 2004

The people at H20 Entertainment Group have some nerve to post this event when the DC Mayor's Office has not issued them a single permit! In fact, the Mayor's office has told H20 not to make any references to a 2004 event, period. I hope there will be a DC marathon next year --- I, too, was one of the people who trained hard through the winter only to be disappointed when the organizers cancelled at the last minute. My friends and I created our own event in College Park, Maryland so we did the distance at least. Thanks to the person who suggested calling the credit card company to reverse the charges....also, Mayor Williams claims his staff will sue H20 for our refunds if they are not made soon.

Call Your Credit Card and Dispute the Charges

This was supposed to be my 30th marathon. Unfortunately the greedy organizers (H2O Sports) decided they were not going to make the profit they thought they would so they cancelled the marathon for 'security reasons.' The city officials are mad, read the Washington Times article. To H2O Sports, you should be ashamed. To the 500 who did the Unofficial Race, I salute you. To the Marine Corp Marathon for your 1,000 entries this fall for DC registrants, god bless you and your uncomparable marathon (one of my favorites). For those who registered for the DC Marathon with a credit card. Call up your credit card company and tell them that you did not receive the service because the marathon was cancelled and you want to have the charge charged back to H2O Sports. It is the only way to get a 'refund.' I got my registration charged back!!! I will stick with the Marine Corp Marathon!!!

Should have been called the 'misled marathon'

My wife and I traveled from Ma. so I could participate in this event. We were assured by race organizers on March 19th and prior that this event would happen. Race organizers 'pulled the plug' and canceled the race on March 20th. Now race organizers refuse to refund participants entree fees according to the Washington Post and have unilaterally decided to defer fees to next years marathon. This practice is totally unjustified and does not allow runners an option. I hope that the city of DC seriously examines this issue and rethinks the merits of having H2O Enterprises run future marathons for the city.

stopping the race unjust

The show must go ON!!! The NCAA tourney is still happening. Without any suggestions from D.C Metro the staff stopped the race, there were no new warnings from the FBI/CIA. The race director and staff gave in and let the situation stop our American way of life for one afternoon. Shame on them Thank God for the USMC and their Marathon this Oct Sempier Fi, Yours in running

Cancellation not justified

Like thousands of others, I would have loved to run this race, for which I volunteered last year and prepared quite a bit this year. I don't know the race director, John Stanley, but I think it's fair to assume that he does not have more insight into DC's security situation than the police chief. DC Metro police did not ask for the cancellation, I can't imagine that the sponsors asked for it, and runners certainly didn't either. It's truly ironic that this race was not stopped by terrorist threats but by a unilateral decision.

Great race, can only get better

For a first-time event, the race organization was extremely impressive. The water stops were well staffed and the small crowds gave a lot of support. The course sent us through a lot of interesting and untraveled areas of DC, and allowed for family and friends to find us at several different spots in the race (a couple friends saw me go by 5 times--a great booster of energy). Race photos were fantastic (with the Capitol/Wash. Monument in background) and yay for Krispy Kreme!

Good and will get better

Ok the baggage was a disaster. But if you finished in the top quarter, it was no worse than your usual race. Also it was directly next to the finish, so there was no long walk to get your gear. Bottom line, stop complaining it was a first effort and they did well. The weather was great, cool and sunny, ideal for running. The crowds were good, a little sparse in areas but then it was Palm Sunday. The three-mile hill near the end is being avoided this year, so they’ve proved that they listen to the competitors. They also provide pace teams, which will help everyone whether try for a PR or training for Boston. The Expo is by RFK Stadium, which is easy to get to by Metro. The start is also easy to get to via the Metro. So once you’ve figured out the Metro you’re laugthing. The finish is just around the corner from the White House and the National Mall, which unfortunately isn’t near any Metro but offers great views to rest up. Hotels are within easy walk from the finish, so only trouble is getting to the start early in the morning. Plenty of food and drinks at the end and easy to meet friends and family. The course is flat with the odd small up hill and some easy down hills but nothing to worry about. Road conditions are mixed but once back in the downtown area they are good and clean. I found it a quick race surface and better that most I’ve run. I would recommend this race and having improved the course, I am hoping they have done likewise with the baggage pickup.

Nice Race

This one was nice, good effort by a first time race. The course was nice, the spectators (in sections where they were) were enthusiastic. Organization was good except for the foul up at the baggage check. Course for this year looks to be better, they eliminated the mile 20 hill. Race organizers promise that they won't let the baggage fiasco happen again.

Great Inaugural Marathon

This was my first marathon and a blast! I did it on a dare, no training, no preparation, and no idea what I was getting myself into. I survived. H2O did an excellent job coordinating/executing the event. Unfortunately, baggage return was a bit of a mess; I found out personally that they would indeed improve the process for 2003. All things considered (i.e. Palm Sunday), the spectator support was grand, you saw a lot of familiar faces as they made their way to several points along the route. DC's Metro is an excellent way to meet up and cheer on your friends/loved ones running. I'm definitely running the 2003 DC Marathon, but this time I will 'train.' :-) Go Navy, Beat Army!

Excellent Race and looking forward to running it

I enjoyed the race greatly last year and plan to run it again this year. The comments from the runner in NY, show their ignorance as it pertains to our area and this is very much our race. I can't speak to the other information listed on the site but it appears someone has a beef and there are more productive ways to settle it. I encourage everyone to run the race, it was amazing and look forward to running it again.

Pretty good but not spectacular

Like many others, I am also a local runner. I really enjoyed the course, particularly since it travels through somany areas that many locals would never run through on their daily routes or even long runs. Tough enough so I could not break the elusive three hour mark, but not so much I wanted to die at the end. Start time too early, bag pick up a mess, no organized runner/friend meetup area as promised, and a very disappointing expo. But much better organized than MCM. Much. On course support was great (thank god for the vasoline!), crowds were actually very enthusiastic though somewhat sparse, and the krispy kremes were awesome, though I did hear that at the end they ran out of a lot of food. Wold definitely recommend this to another runner - local or otherwise. If you want momuments galore stick to MCM, but otherwise this is the best marathon in town.

Great 1st effort...

I ran this race kind of on a whim - my brother wanted to do it and I said 'what the heck.' I'm glad I came out. The course was great. It is a very different DC-based marathon from the Marine Corps. The DC Marathon is more neighborhood-oriented and the Marine Corps focuses on the grandeur of the monuments and scenery. They aren't the same course. I heard after the race that there was some problem where a couple runners at the very front got lost - not sure what happened there. And there were complaints about baggage check, which the organizers acknowledged and said they'd fix next time. Someone above mentioned beer at mile 17 - this was a 'public service' of local Hash House Harriers ('on-on'), who do this at various other marathons, too, including the Marine Corps. They weren't officially part of the race, but I know seeing them always puts a smile on my face, because they are most excellent cheerleaders, too. The race was a little expensive, but there were several discounts, including discounts for local running club members. It ended up costing me the same as the MCM, b/c they allowed you to claim more than one discount when registering. I'd recommend this race to my friends. Also, for anyone who cares about the little things: the finisher medals were full color and quite nice!

Pretty Good job for an inaugural marathon

I was pleasantly surprised by the good job that was done by the organizers of this inaugural event. On the negative side, the expo was unimpressive, the t-shirt was one of the ugliest I've ever received (even worse than the ones at some local 5K's) and the medal, while very attractive, was quite small. On the positive side, the course was beautiful, relatively flat with a few moderate hills to make it challenging, the race was well organized (plenty of water, Gatorade, toilets, etc.) and the fan turnout was better than I expected. Although much of the course did not have many spectators at all, there were a few areas where a fairly large number of spectators gathered. The spectators that did turn out were extremely supportive of the runners. Washington DC was my second marathon and I reached my goal of breaking the 4 hour barrier. While I prefer to run larger events, this marathon will always be special to me and I will consider running it again in the future.

Excellent job to TEAM H2O!

Congrats to the TEAM H2O reps who pulled this one together. As a neophyte (my first marathon) you have set the bar high for future competitions. Race course was excellent, time was a little early, crowds were thin but encouraging. Recommend it to any other first timers tape their name on their shirt for more 'personal' recognition and encouragement by the crowds - they were inspiring! Again - good job to the H2O team and I will see you next year!

Great 1st Marathon in DC

This is my 4th marathon and by far the most fun. I live in the DC area and run around DC nearly everyday and the course was well chosen. Although, some of the streets were a bit narrow in the early stages with a few too many cars on them. The only drawbacks I encountered was the early start at 7:00 AM. The DC Metro typically does not run until 8:00 AM on the weekends and my 28 minute trip took 56 minutes making me 13 minutes late for the start. Next year the race should start at 9:00 AM or later for the March 20th - 25th range. As for the Palm Sunday crowd that was around us, most of them were accomodating, but I did see some people with Palms in their window yelling at the course directors. The only real drawback was the baggage pick-up. The wait was intolerable, more people are needed there than the finish line which had perhaps too many. Also, I couldn't find a seat and sat on a box of toilet paper.

Great race!!!

Wonderful course through a fantastic city. (I may be biased, living here, but ...) Great on-course organization and plenty of water for us slower runners. (I don't check bags so I didn't run into that problem.) The DC police we fantastic in letting traffic through to help with the whole Palm Sunday thing. The only thing missing was more spectators, which should come in the future. The course is spectator friendly though, a big plus. I will definitely run this race again. It ranks right up there after Marine Corps (my personal favorite) and is way better than Disney or Rock'n'Roll in San Diego! And the medal is pretty too!

Thank You DC

Forgive me, I'm a first timer and I don't have anything bad to say. We stayed at the Hilton and took the Metro to the start. The sunrise from Arlington was inspiring. I was more of a sightseer and enjoyed the crowds and scenery. I had trouble from North Capitol (mile 18) on but managed to walk in and what a feeling. We had decided not to use the 'bag claim' and that turned out to be a good decision. The meeting area didn't work out but we had a back-up plan: meet back at the hotel. Thanks to all the organizers, the volunteers, the fans, the DC police and to DC itself for a great experience. I am surprised that the official website doesn't have the full results. I am also curious as to how many runners crossed the start line?

Incredible debut, well-organized marathon.

As a first time visitor to Washington, DC, I was most impressed by the spectacular, scenic course. Some of the uphill portions in the second half of the race slowed me a bit, but this was my most enjoyable marathon to date. I've completed 8. Water and Gatorade were plentiful throughout the course and who could complain about Krispy Kremes at the finish? The crowd support was wonderful, and DC cops are the best. This was the first marathon that I ran where some of the police officers encouraged me to keep it going. This one is worth a repeat trip.

Excellent Marathon

The weather was great and the course is perfect for first time or experienced marathon runners. The volunteers and spectators covered 'most' of the 26.2 miles. I enjoyed seeing the nations sites during the course of the marathon. My sister and I ran with a pace group and this was a great experience. I would recommend the DC marathon to all!

Well done for an inaugural event

Very similar to the Marine Corps marathon, but with more hills. Beautiful course. Fans are great at the end of the course, but 7am Sunday start down Constitution Avenue means many fewer fans on that section than at the Marine Corps. Very well organized except for the bag pick-up at the end. Krispy Kreme's at the finish really hit the spot!

A Great Race

This was my first marathon. If it could not be the marine corps marathon, I'm glad I picked this one. I had a great time. The organization was good, people were great and the time of year was perfect. What a way to spring into summer.

Wildly beyond my expectations

I was skeptical of this race when I signed up. I swallowed hard at the high registration fee. Inaugurals often have growing pains and city marathons can be tedious at the start due to weaving around slower runners. Top it off that an injury prevented me from training. But I live 15 minutes from DC, so I signed on. I found the race scenic, not too difficult - but sufficiently challenging. Running up Constitution Ave & seeing the Capitol, running along Independence Ave & seeing the Jefferson Memorial and the Washington Monument looming ahead - I have a newfound appreciation for the city, its neighborhoods & architecture. Great support, great fans for most of the race (a little sparse early on), and great post race - hey all the Krispy Kremes you could eat! Beautiful finishers medal! Great traffic control by the DC police. Only 3 negatives (besides the fee) come to mind - understaffed water station around mile 21 but I just had to grab it off the table and long lines for bag claim (glad I didn't bring one!) and 6 1/2 hour cutoff for traffic. I felt really bad seeing slower runners on the sidewalk waiting for traffic lights as I was heading to the metro. Ok, took 45 minutes to find my wife, but that was our fault. If you are a runner - this is THE way to see the nation's capitol city. Certainly hope to run it again!

great race

I ran this and totally bonked the last 10k. Nevertheless, I thought it was a great race. This marathon takes you through the parts of the city where people actually live, not just around the monuments. I realized while I was running it that this made it so much better than Marine Corps, which is run primarily in Northern Virginia in very clinical areas. This is a relatively tough course, particularly the last real hill at about 22. Thank god for the doctors/nurses in the medical tent.

Great First Time

Although I had been a spectator at several other marathons and had been regaled with stories of many others by my friends, this was my first as a racer. I must admit it was a surprisingly positive experience considering my preconceptions and in comparison with the other events. I will definitely be a future participant and will highly recommend it to anyone else, particularly novices. It was an absolutely great first race. Unlike other races where one may be subjected to busing and corralling for hours in some urban wasteland before the start, here you arrive by Metro a short stroll away from Memorial Bridge and the starting line. You can then sit or recline on grassy slopes and watch the sunrise over the magnificent city and the Potomac (just like the Marine Corps (MCM)). For somebody who trained on the steep terrain of Sugarloaf Mountain, the course seemed nice and easy and relatively level--pretty comparable to MCM. As for the “too steep hill” on 13th St., it was steep but very short--only about 75 yards long. Wasn’t it better to go down rather than up it? For probably over 20 miles of the course the traffic was well separated and distant from the raceway. The police did an excellent job of handling the traffic. Yes, once in a while they would let a car or two slip through big gaps in the runners-so what?! It was done prudently and safely. At my incredibly slow 5 hour pace, I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the memorials, all the statues, the beautiful buildings, and the grand vistas down PA Ave and 13th Street. Want to commend the organizers who took the course through neighborhoods (Petworth, Anacostia & Columbia Heights) most visitors never see. It was also a great way to tie the city together in a joint venture. It was wonderful to revisit SE where my father grew up and to once again cross the Sousa Bridge and the Anacostia-this time by foot. Read one comment about how the course went through “common” places & didn’t go through the most scenic or desirable areas. Firstly, I already have said it was very scenic, secondly, how deplorably elitist in tone & distinctly ignorant as well, and thirdly, a marathon with its tons of discarded clothing and trash, public urination, etc. is the last thing the fine people of “desirable” Spring Valley, North Portal, Kalorama, Burleith, etc. are going to allow in their neighborhoods. That said, DC does offer a huge potential for other interesting routes. For instance, the National Arboretum could be added, followed by a run through Trinidad to Brookland up to Missouri Ave, Rock Creek Park and a return via Beach Drive and Connecticut Ave. Probably too challenging-just a thought. Organization was great from registration through pre-race to the finish line. The Expo unlike the rat maze for MCM was enjoyable and one could actually talk to the exhibitors without being swept away by the crowd. Didn’t need to pay $5 to park if you didn’t mind walking a few feet. Seemed like the water stations worked well for the amount of participants. People complained about lack of food-aren’t oranges (which were provided) food? What do you want, steak? All the volunteers were helpful and friendly including the ones at the baggage grab. Yes it was slow but refreshments were brought to us while we waited in line plus it was nice to have time to talk to other runners and share the experiences of what was, for me, an exciting day. However I wish I could say that 2 items were not stolen from my bag-NO, they didn’t fall out-they were packed solidly beneath my clothing. Also might I echo the comments of others about the shirt? How about a long sleeve one next year or maybe even emulating the practice at the Annapolis 10-miler where very nice premiums like wind pants, jackets or race bags are provided? This should be a very high-class event. Please don’t add music or bands. The music at the MCM was painfully loud and extremely annoying. Bands are at some other marathons and that's good and I plan to run the RnR Half Marathon in VA Beach. However, there’s no need for every race to share the same formula. Isn’t there anyone else who thinks they may be a distraction? Diversity makes the world go round. Fans/spectators. Thought the support was really good considering there were only 6000 participants and that the race started relatively early. As it was, the crowds at the end started to push into the raceway. Of course it was not anything like the MCM where I witnessed a runner put out of the race because a thoughtless spectator stepped across the road in front of him. Did enjoy all the doggies who dragged their owners to the race and the little ladies in Petworth ringing bells from their doorways. Have to admit though that I don’t really need people cheering me on-after all I usually train alone-so a lack of huge crowds or cheerleaders is not a downer for me. Certainly didn’t have the energy to “high-five” everyone. I know that’s not the general opinion, however. Anyway I’ll be back next year, if able.

Great Race

This was my 1st marathon and I had a great time. It has a great course with great spectators, everywhere. They had an open area expo that was not crowded. Only negative points I have is the marathon never answered or returned email questions (pre and post race), gear pick-up area was a disaster, family reunion area was not to be found, and the T-shirt was rather low quality. If they fix these problems, which should be easy to do, they will have a world class marathon in 2003.

Great start!

My first marathon and I had an absolute blast! Watching the sun rise above the city from across the river set the scene for an awesome run! My nits and comments: My race packet did NOT contain the 'beaded fasteners' for either my chip or the bag tag. I got by without both but there was a stuffing error. Perhaps directions to review the contents at pick-up are in order. My 'bus ticket' was missing as well. When I asked at the information booth, they did give a me a replacement - which, as it turned out, the driver didn't care about anyway. The soy pea soup was an undesirable that did nothing more than add weight to carry home. Cheap T-shirt. Expected nicer for the fee. The vendors at the expo were great - nice selections of running gear! Arriving at the start fairly early (just before 6), there was confusion about which side of the bridge we should be on. Nobody seemed to know for sure. The promised 'maps' were nowhere to be found. I ran with the 3:30 pace team. They did a great job staying just below target pace for the first 20 miles. (I lost 'em on the hill but still finsihed at 3:27.) The massage line was ridiculous. It was moving so slowly that standing there to wait for a massage was out of the question. Either don't promise these or get more bandwidth. Mile markers and clocks were great. Not leading the race - I thought directions were just fine. The only marker I missed was mile 12 - saw the mile marker but not the clock. Refreshment stands on course were great! Friendly folks! The PowerGel stop seemed to have moved from Mile 18 to Mile 19 - just after the ad hoc beer stop. The hill from mile 20 - 22 took its toll on a number of us. There were a lot of people dragging at the top. Crowds on this stretch were particularly sparse. Doing something to encourage folks to cheer in this section would be great. Music at the top of the hill, orange sections or something to give a boost for the hill would be a real perk from the runners' persepective. Finish line was great! Nice crowd, cool bridge, etc. Need more water at the finish - the drink tables were up close to the finish line and you had to kinda fight backwards to get a second cup after passing. The steps between the finish line and the bag claim gotta go. Maybe make a ramp or something but going up and then down those steps hurt after 26.2 miles. The bag-claim tent needed more volunteers - too much backup there. My elderly father was meeting me at the finish line. We'd made specific plans to use the alphabetical signs in the 'reunite' area. Though I eventually found him - we never did find the signs.

Impressive Start!

This was my second marathon and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Family and friends were able to see me a number of times thanks to the course design. Fans and course support were outstanding. I was particularly impressed that organizers were able to get Metro running early so runners could easily get to the start. I didn't check my bags so I avoided what appears to be the major drawback and I was more than a little dissappointed with the race t-shirt. However, these things are minor in what I believe was an outstanding first event.

Great course, Great people, Great run!

I decided not to finish my home town marathon (Los Angeles) to be able to run DC. Although it is still early in 2002, it was by far my best decision to date. The DC marathon was terrific- running through history. Picture perfect monuments. The capital of this great country. What a trip! I loved it and will be back in 2003 (just wish it was a few weeks later in the year, so i could still run LA) Anyone looking to have a great time on a fairly flat and easy course should consider this race. The only issues I had were the traffic, cars on the course and the lack of porta-jons- I marked many a bush along the 26.2 miles.

Well done! Great marathon!

I had nothing but a wonderful experience running this marathon! The expo was well stocked, not crowded and had some fun stuff to keep the kids happy too! What a great idea to have FREE pacer groups ... perfect for anyone looking for a PR or just wanting some support through the course. The course was beautiful! I thought the fans were great. I liked having a mix of quiet areas to run and focus and then hitting strips of screaming fans! They seemed to be there just when you needed them and DC fans know how to cheer runners! The finish was a bit crowded (I personally never check a bag - and was glad not to have to wait in that line) and the markers for meeting family were a bit hard to see. I know both will change next year. The pumping music and great crowds at the finish were great! A big thanks to all those smiling volunteers! What a great group of people! Well done everyone!

Excellent Marathon, Highly Recommended

Great course. It was thrilling to run by the Capital and historical monuments. The course was challenging at the end because of some uphills. Runners and crowd very friendly. Would recommend this marathon for both experienced and novice marathoners. This race will give NY and Chicago serious competition. I will run it again in 2003!

Very Good Race

Glad to see that the overall comments are favorable because the race was a very good experience for me. Reading the negative comments it seems that some runners never give up searching for that perfect marathon (nor do they give up complaining when they don't find it). Whether it's no beer at the finish, or a steep downhill where they think it shouldn't be, or not enough rabid spectators where they think they should be, or no bands (since when did bands become a required part of a marathon?), they are never satisfied. I'd rather remember the great weather, the fair and interesting course, and the many volunteers who helped us before, during, and after the race.

Great as long as you're under 6:00!

This was my second marathon (MCM was first), and I had a blast! Not big crowd support by any means, but I appreciate anybody willing to spend some time cheering us on! I wasn't sure what to expect from folks stuck in traffic, but received only encouragement from everybody I passed. Saw totally new parts of DC, and greatly appreciated the running downhill for the last couple of miles. I also really appreciate having both spring and fall marathons so close to home, so hope that they continue this one. It certainly was a bonus that DC dished up an absolutely gorgeous day to be out and running. Couple of suggestions. As a back-of-the-packer, it was unnerving to have the streetsweeper nipping at my heels (though it certainly provided motivation), and my goal became to get to the next mile marker before they unplugged the clock. Bathrooms earlier in the course would be greatly appreciated. Great thing about being a slow runner - no lines at the bag pickup! Since I plan/hope to increase my pace over the summer, I definitely plan to run this again!

Traffic Control Problems

I enjoyed running this marathon. There were few spectators along the route. I did love the beer in paper cups at mile 17, although I'm sure that was not a part of the organized effort. The small number of runners made getting into and out of the port-a-potties very easy. My one negative observation is the traffic control problem. Streets with no center island and car traffic in one lane, runners in the other, separated only by orange cones. Later in the race police officers were allowing cars to cross the race path also. Sometimes the traffic wouldn't even stop or obey the police officers. A potential disaster in the making. My hunch would be that this marathon should improve next year.

WONDERFUL WAY TO SEE DC

The course was fun to run, but did not expect the few hills. The weather could not have been better for me. DC police were great in how they handled Palm Sunday traffic and spectators.

Good race.

I enjoyed running this race. The organization was just fine, with the exception of the bag pick up after the race. The volunteers were friendly and the spectators enthusiastic, especially the last few miles.

Everything lined up perfectly

I came in from Wisconsin to run this marathon, and was very pleased. The city is easy to get around, the start easy to get to, and the finish very close to the host hotel (Marriot Metro Center). To me those are important, as you do not want to have to struggle to the start line or back to your hotel, if you're from out of town. The course itself was great, and the fans were very vocal when you needed them, especially at the one big hill aorund mile 21. Plenty of fluids as well. Other than the bag pickup, this is definitely 5 stars all the way, and I am sure they will have that corrected next year. Great job!!

Outstanding Marathon!!!!

The Marathon was great!! Good course, spectators. For a first time Marathon in DC, I would rate it 4.5 Stars. If only not for the long wait (almost 2 hours)at the baggage claim, it would have been perfect. Nevertheless, GREAT!!

What a great experience!

From the pre-race info to the expo to the race itself, I thought that this was a great marathon that will only be better next year. If I don't get a BQ in the fall, I will be back for the 2nd running!

excellent start!

DC was my first marathon and I had a great time. I was in awe of the fan support; however, it was sparse in some areas. You have to love the spectators with candy, fruit, and other goodies (especially the dixie cups of beer at mile 17). The course was good, my only problem was the very steep downhill at mile 23. The first half was better...more scenic and made for faster times. Overall, I would recommend to beginning or experienced runners.

Planned well, implemented with care

This was my second marathon (NYC 2001 was the first). I echo all the positive comments in previous entries and I won't dwell on the glitches (they, I'm convinced will be ironed out). The pre race planning and communication were excellent, the implementation of the event was great. Seeing the sun rise behind the Washington Monument was awesome! The volunteers could not have been more helpful. The race support was well placed and the fans were encouraging (and yelling all the right comments). I had a terrible pain in my hip and decided to stop at a First Aid tent (at about mile 18). The young man was wonderful, efficient and caring. He had me in and out of there in about a minute (which helped me attain a PR). The post race goodies were plentiful and offered a great variety. They even got the weather to cooperate! I'd do this race again and again. Thanks to all the organizers and volunteers.

A good start

For an inaugural marathon, I thought the organizers did a first-rate job. The glitches are well documented by others and do not need rehashing. Yes, it was a nightmare getting our bags back, but unlike many other races I have done in the DC area, checking in the bags was quite easy and efficiently run. I was able to keep my warm clothes on until 5 minutes before the race started and still make it to the starting line with ease, which was nice because it was cold. The course was great. Integrating the famous parts of DC with the less well known areas was an excellent idea. Considering that it was an inaugural marathon with a 7:00 a.m. start, the crowds were great especially in the Capital Hill area, Dupont Circle, and along the last 2-3 miles. There was a lot of hype before the race about the Palm Sunday conflict that made it seem like it was going to be runners vs. churchgoers, but I found those on their way to or from church were some of the more supportive fans. I have to compliment the organizers on having plenty of bathrooms at the start and finish, water/gatorade, and food. I wish there had been a bathroom on the course earlier than mile 5 because lots of people were basically urinating in the street those first few miles. The water stations could be a little longer as well. The volunteers giving out water tended to be standing quite close to one another. Since the crowd was still fairly packed at the first station (mile 3), it was a little hard to get to if you happened to be on the wrong side of the road. I very much look forward to doing this one again in the future.

Watch Out New York, Chicago and MCM

One of the very best first time marathons I've experienced in my life. What an amazing job. The course was amazing and so much better that the MCM. Who wants to run on a freeway after this marathon. There were some mistake but for a first time run, it was excellent. I agree with the comment today about the organziers H20 Entertainment and the amazing job they did right out of the gate. I believe this marathon will be one of the biggest and most prestigous in years to come. I can't wait to run it again in 2003. The view of the city from 13th Street will stay in my mind forever and the beginning with the speaker blasting 'A beautiful Day. It was a Beautiful Day and I encourage everyone to run this marathon. The crowd support was amazing as a first year and should only grow in the future.

Great Race! The Few Problems Can Be Corrected

The course, spectators and especially the volunteers were great. My experience was that the race was well organized with the exception of the much commented upon baggage claim process. All of the pre-race information and instructions, packet pick-up and expo, transportation to the race, pre-race waiting area, the race course, ammenitiies on the race course and at the finish area were excellent. Also, I want to emphasize that every volunteer that I encountered was friendly and helpful. I'm sure that the race organizers have received many suggestions and are already working on correcting the baggage claim process. My suggestion is that they have to put the bags into smaller numerical groupings when they are collected before the race. Based on what I saw, the bags were thrown into groups of a thousand with no order in each group. I assume that the bags arrive at the finish area before the runners. That time should be spent getting these smaller groups of bags into numerical order before the runners arrive at finish area. Also, having separate pickup points around the tent for different sets of numbers would help (e.g., separate windows for numbers 1000-1999 and 2000-2999). Another concern is that the finish area was fine for the number of runners that were in the race. However, if the race adds thousands of runners in the future, the finish area will get very crowded. They could use Freedom Plaza as the finish area, and move the reunion area to one of the streets. Also, having poles rather than people holding up the signs in the reunion area would seem like a good idea. I don't want these previous suggestions to detract from my overall experience at the race. Again, it was a great race and I plan to be back in the future.

Great course, great experience

To be able to run a marathon in the heart of DC was an amazing experience. The monuments and attractions that you expect to see were viewable from the course, but we also got a chance to see the DC that few know about, areas that gave us a real feel for the city. The course was mostly flat with a couple of hills to keep it honest, and I was able to run in under 4 hours, even though I am a first-timer. The fans were really encouraging, especially at mile 24 where their support was needed. They cheered, honked their horns, and offered drinks, candy, and baked goods to keep us going. The only drawback was the communication with the race organizers. They kept us up to date on items via email, but certain details, like the particulars of the post-race party, were unclear. It was excusable however, as the race itself was marvelous.

No Complaints

I have never checked bags at a road race..it is almost always a debacle. The weather, the starting line scene, the fan support and the easy course combined for a great day. I hope it becomes a tradition but one wonders if that is possible in D.C. Congratulations to the organizers for pulling it off and thanks to the fans who came out and supported the event.

Great Course, but the rest needs work

Hey, for all of you who ran this race, you know the course was very friendly. But the finish was a problem with baggage, fenced in finish area you could not find your way out of, finish line volunteers who had no idea where baggage was, and the suprise for you when you did find it, and in my opinion, a very cheap shirt for the $80 entry fee. Hopefully the organizers will work on these problems, and next years event will be much better.

Runner from Virginia

This was my 7th marathon in the last 18 months. I was excited about running a marathon close to home with all the possibilities of running past some of the most wonderful and recognized monuments in the world. Unfortunately, most of the run was away from the most scenic and desirable areas of DC, and instead wrapped around some rather common streets that can be found anywhere. Another problem with the race is that the start and finish are in two different places. Accordingly, gear bags had to be dropped off in trucks at the start and delivered to the finish line. Trying to get your bag after the race was more difficult than running the 26.2 miles. Most everyone had to wait up to two hours in the hot sun next to the smelly port-a-potties while volunteers stumbled to find each bag among the thousand that were checked-in at the start. It was simply unbelievable how unorganized the bag pick-up was. If the organizers don’t improve this part, they well never get anyone back to run this marathon. There was no music, bands, cheerleaders, or community organizations out to support the runners either. Only in the last 6 miles or so was there any fan support to speak of, and they did a nice job. In other words, it was a very bland run. The Washington DC marathon should and could be one of the best if they improved the course, fan support and the organization, but until they do, I would suggest you find another one to run. Oh, one other thing. Beer at the end would be nice.

Kudos to DC Marathon

After reading many of the previous comments I decided to chime in with my opinion. This was my 7th marathon; ranging in size from 100 runners to 20,000+. I decided to run the inaugural DC Marathon because it was close-by and it fit into my training schedule for this year's Boston. Overall, I felt H2O Entertainment did a fantastic job. Sure there were some missteps but that was to be expected for a first-time event. I won't be critical unless the problems aren't corrected next time around. I, too, waited 45+ min for my bag (which is unacceptable) but enjoyed discussing the race with everyone around me. I thought the course itself was excellent. Minimal hills, varied scenery, good spectator support (for a first time event) and outstanding volunteer help. The finish corral and services were better than most except the physical size needed to be increased. It became very crowded as people completed their run. For the 'back-of-the-packers' (and I applaud anyone who completes a marathon regardless of pace) this is probably not the best choice. I can't fault a city such as DC for not wanting to keep the roads closed much over 5 hours. My suggestion for these runners is to find one of the many marathons that are less urban and will keep the course open until all are finished. My most enjoyable marathon fits this catagory. In conclusion, again I applaud H2O Entertainment, the city of Washington DC and all the volunteers and spectators. I feel that this run will only get better and has the potential to be a great springtime marathon.

Fantastic beginning to a wonderful event!

This was my second marathon (first was marine corps in oct), and I have to say I would choose this over the marine corps any day of the week. The course was great, integrating neighborhoods that often get overlooked by visitors and even long-time residents of this city. Crowd support was plentiful in most places and I'm sure will only get bigger in future years. Race organization was phenomenal, particularly for a first-time event. There were a few missteps made (read prior posts), but they got the most important thing right the first time: the fluid stations were frequent and adequately stocked, even for back-of-the-packers. Great start...I look forward to joining you all again next year!

Good start, but there is some work to do

The entry fee is not a good value compared to other marathons that cost $70-$80(Chicago, NYC) in terms of goodies and the like. Course markings need to improve as well. Running on Palm Sunday is not the best of ideas. (traffic and patience) The course itself is quite good and provides a good challenge. I thought fan support was good particularly froom mile 23 on, which is where I think a runner gets the most benefit. This race can be a viable alternative to the Marine Corps Marathon if it wants to be. Overall, a good start for DC.

destined to be a tradition

This was my third marathon and the most enjoyable. The course is terrific, with many nationally and locally famous sites. The best moment was experiencing the incredible panoramic view of the city while coming down 13th Street - it really helped me to finish strong. There was more logistical support than I've ever seen before. The glitches were minor compared to what was accomplished. This should become a classic spring event.

Disappointing

On this same website, I entered a comment as soon as I registered, titled 'Hopeful.' I am glad I have already run 11 other marathons that know what they are doing. Even the Rock and Roll Marathon, during their inaugural run was better organized (despite some water problems). If this was not the first year for the race, I would be even more critical. Having said this, my comments will closely mirror other disappointed runners. The course was fine, my time was great, but the $80 fee was a waste of money. A white short sleeved t shirt (there's a new one), half- hour wait for baggage (God bless those who waited ONE HOUR), inability to properly mark a 'runner reunion' area, not to mention course marking problems, Palm Sunday issues, and making the race miserable for some slower runners. I will not run this race ever again. However, for the sake of other runners and for the citizens of the great city of DC, I hope the organizers get their act together and note how Boston, Chicago, NY, etc... run a marathon. Good luck to those wanting to run this one in 2003!

Has great potential of being one of the best

I gave this a 5 star rating for the course, and only a 4 star rating for the other two areas because I see this Marathon just improving as time goes by. This is my 3rd marathon and I thoroughly enjoyed running it. There were a couple of gliches that I'm sure will be worked out before next year (ie., baggage pick-up and a couple of streets where policemen allowed side traffic to proceed when the light turned green). My other two marathons have been the Marine Corps Marathon and I thought the DC Marathon route was much better. In fact, the finishing line is much better than the Marine Corps. The course was basically flat; there were some small hilly areas, but nothing too hard to master. I set a PR and improved my time by at least 46 minutes. Being from this area I plan and hope to run this each year. I see this marathon as becoming one of the top marathons in the U.S., and in the world, to run. It was a lot of fun and I give it '2 thumbs up.' A job well done to all who organized this event.

Great for a First Timer -If under 6 hrs.

This was my first marathon and I loved it. The energy from the DC fans was amazing, and I really appreciated those in the sparser areas. The hill at M19-21 is not condusive to fan presence but the ones that were there did a great job. And here's to those who, while stuck in church traffic, were honking and cheering us on. It is too bad that the baggage claim was such a mess. Do you really want marathoners standing in line for an hour? Great course - I loved it!

Great Experience

This was the first marathon that I have done but I thouroughly enjoyed the experience. The long hill between M20 and M22 was a nice challenge before the mostly downhill final four miles. The meeting area at the finish could have been organized better. I gave the race 3 stars for spectators because there are stretches in the course where the spectators are sparse. However when present they were very loud and supportive. I would do this marathon again.

Nice inaugural race in DC.

Except for a few logistic problems, the marathon was great. It offered a very cultural view of the city and the spectators never stopped cheering. I am sure that next year the race won't be on a religious holiday and the organizers will fix the baggage pickup problem. I will definitely do this race again.

World Class Race

I came in from Texas for the race. I enjoyed many things about the race. Having run many marathons all over the world, I was happy that the Capital City of the USA has a World Class Marathon of its own now. For a first marathon, many more things could have gone wrong than just the baggage pick-up, I anticipate many more entries next year, in fact they might even reach their limits early! It was that good. I enjoyed going to the Capitol, seeing the White House, the Monuments, the Cherry Blossoms. We spent a lot of money, but it was well worth it. I for one will definitely be back and bringing the kids next year. lornae@aol.com

A very very good marathon with a ton of potential.

The course was easier than the Marine Corps Marathon. Having the metro open early for the runners was a huge bonus. For a first time event, excluding the bag claim area, this was a very good run. This was my 8th marathon, and I would do it again. It is better than the baltimore marathon which I will never do again. A few errors were made which I am sure will be corrected in time for next years race.

WDC Marathon #1- good and will get better.

WDCM was my first. I loved the course, you really got a great snapshot of the city. Although it gave me fits, the hill from M20 to M22 (or thereabouts) wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. The crowds we're great. Again, not much to compare to, but they were very encouraging and plentiful around Smithsonian, Dupont, and Union Station to name a few spots. Bless all those caught in traffic due to the race, many of them had a 'if you can't beat them...' attitude and were honking their horns in support. Efficient and friendly water stations. Friendly volunteers- THANK YOU! The '3' for organization really comes down to that bag check debacle. That really stunk. It's too bad that the bag check situation was the last impression of an otherwise great event on a great day. But I had a fantastic time and would encourage those to come to DC next year and give it a shot.

Very well done

This was my first marathon, and I wasn't sure what to expect. The weather turned out to be great, the course was very scenic (as a 6-year DC resident, it was cool to run through parts of the city I had never seen before, as well as by some of the tourist favorites), and the crowds that came out were a lot of fun. There were some parts of the course without a lot of spectators, but for the most part there were enough to keep your spirits up. And the uphills weren't as steep as I expected...though miles 19-21 weren't a piece of cake, it was great to end on a downhill. I thought the organization was very good--well-staffed water stations, a streamlined packet-pickup (and lots of helpful information beforehand from the organizers), good traffic diversion (even with lots of churchgoing traffic) and friendly and helpful volunteers. Looking over the other comments, I'm glad I didn't check a bag. Everything else was great!

Bad Organization, Great Course

To start, the course was great. A wonderful overview of DC and enough hills to challenge but not overwhelm. Hopefully they can keep the course for years to come. I also have to say that the volunteers were great. There were plenty of them, and they seemed to have overall good attitudes when faced with the conditions placed on them by H2O Entertainment. As far as organization, H2O Entertainment proved to be pathetic. Where do I start? Has the company ever heard of Public Relations and Publicity. None of my friends who live in DC ever saw anything related to the race prior to race day. That probably explains the low spectator turnout. There were no H2O reps at the race start. The poor volunteers had no idea about any of the race details, including such basics as where the start line was. Not enough port-a-johns. No loudspeaker to get people lined up at the start. Most of the runners were stuck wandering around wondering where to start and if the race had actually started yet. Race course conditions were fine, with good water stops. Could have used a few more. If the weather had been warm, that might have been an issue. The finish area was awful. The advertised 'family reunion area' was not set up adequately, and not a single volunteer or H2O person I asked had even heard of it. Finding your friends at the end was just dumb luck. And, as noted by other runners, the bag check was a disaster. There were plenty of H2O people around the finish, but none dared to go over and help out the poor volunteers stuck in the bag check tent. Come on guys, this stuff is not rocket science. There really aren't excuses for glitches like that, especially with an $85 entry fee. It took 2.5 hours for my friend to get her bag. It took me over an hour, and there was no line when I finished. Even for the first few runners, finding bags was an ordeal. H2O should be ashamed of their organizationial efforts. The course was great, but the basics were sorely neglected. All the runners deserve a refund. If H2O bothers to update the web site for the race finish (not done as of 3PM EST on the 25th) and dares to congratulate themselves on their organizational efforts, they should all be caned. (Note, I specifically do not include the volunteers.)

Great race, need to iron out a couple of wrinkles

Excellent race. I was impressed with everything during the race with two exceptions. The gear pick-up was a disaster, considering this is the last thing you do before you leave the marathon, this was not a good send-off. The line was so long and disorganized, I sat down and had my wife wait for almost 45 minutes to get my stuff. Also there is a very steep downhill around mile 23 that is too steep for so late in the race. Would I run this race again, yes, and will hope to get another PR like yesterday.

Great race with some problems

There were 2 problems that I encountered after the race...Baggage claim and Reunion Area. The organizers should find ways to improve the system of handling the baggage. It was very frustrating that finishers had to wait for more than one hour to get their baggage. In the Reunion Area, I could not understand why a person had to hold the sign A-E, F-K, etc. Could the organizers just made a post to hold those BIG LETTER SIGNS? I must say that the food/drink was plentiful and a very good variety. My congratulations to the organizers and volunteers for a job well done.

DC's First Marathon--My First Marathon

This was my first, and having heard how efficient the MCM was and how well supported by the fans, I wasn't expecting so much from this, but I don't see how you could do a better race through DC. Baggage claim was a bit cumbersome, but I just went and had some lunch while the line shrunk. My sense of accomplishment and satisfaction is deepened having done this in DC, in this time in history, and having done the INAUGURAL run.

Perfect weather, Bag Disaster, Hotel Snobbery

A big thumbs up to the H2O crew for their first effort at a big-time marathon. You'd have to expect it to not be flawless, and the bag check fiassco afterwards was horrible! Imagine running 26.2 miles and then standing in a line thirty people wide and complete chaos in a single tent with no order whatsoever for 1 hour and a half! Unbelieveable, but I'm sure the last time it will happen. The course was great, the hills that were there were ok, and the crowds were sizeable considering the time of day and the Palm Sunday overlap. The 'headquarters' Hotel at the Capital Hilton did a horrible job of hosting a packed house filled with runners. Not only was there no food offered in the morning before 6am, but they gave everyone a hassle about 'late check-out'. We needed food available as early as 4:30am and the hotel could have made a killing charging us for it, but decided against extending its hours for us, and then we were told that we would be allowed to get a late check out when we arrived, but they tried to charge us $75 for being after 1:30pm... If they are the race Hotel next year, I'm not shelling out $140 to suffer through that again. All in all, it was a life changing experience, I'll never forget it, and my wife and I will run it again.

Good weather, bad organization

I know that this was the inaugural race, but the disorganization was pathetic. The fact that the first few runners got lost on the course says it all. After running the entire race, the last thing anyone wanted to do was wait for two hours to pick up your checked bag. After running the Marine Corps, and having such a wonderful experience both in the city and as fas as marathons go, I will not be quick to sign up for this one again.

VERY DISAPPOINTING

This marathon was my third, and if it had been my first, I would never run another one. If Washington DC wanted to show the running community it could host a marathon for all levels of runners, they did NOT succeed. Several runners, including myself were running just under a 6 hour pace. Just after crossing the 1/2 marathon mark we were told to move to the sidewalks and grass areas. This was not even at 3 hours into the race! The race officials closed down water stations, put away the gels, took down mile markers, Police officers were no longer stopping traffic, volunteers were gone and no markers left except orange cones stacked on streets, and some left down the middle of the street. Do you know how many street corners have cones in DC? They even locked the portable potties! (Thank you so much you kind people who had finished the race and let me use your bathroom!) We were left on our own to find our way when were were and weren't lost. I'm sure many people turned the corner at mile marker 17 and instead of heading towards 18, just turned and joined the runners at mile 24 (they were within a couple of blocks of each other). The few spectators that turned out for the race were great, but there were very few! The race officials justified the $80 entry fee for all the security for the race. As my support waited at the finish line, he overhead someone remark we have no idea how many people are still on the course -- was there no one following the last person? For those of us who registered early we had the privilege of paying the full $80.00 entry fee. Later registrants received local running club discounts and then just a $60.00 entry fee. That seems fair to me! Neither the expo (which one had to pay $5.00 to park) or the pasta dinner were near the host hotels. I skipped the post race party, deciding it would probably be just as great and as organized as the rest of the race. Don't confuse this race with the Marine Corp, it is nothing like that wonderful race. And for all the complaints Baltimore had for the hills, Baltimore was so much better organized! But at least those of us who finished have a medal that states the inaugural marathon (although DC has hosted other marathons).

Not bad for an inaugural marathon, but seen better

Lots of info leading up to the race, good start, interesting course (saw parts of DC I'd never seen before). Crowd support was thin, but very enthusiatic where there were people. Lots of first timers, great to see. Finish area was confusing. Major problems with retrieving bags at the end, but sure appreciated the volunteers walking up and down with food and drink for us. A short sleeved T-shirt for an $85 entry fee? Should have been a lot more perks for the price.

Great course, almost perfect org, decent crowd

This was my third marathon and I loved the course. It travelled through many parts of DC, showing a variety of neighborhoods and great scenery (as promised). There weren't many hills either, which was very nice. The crowd was much better than I expected for an inaugural marathon and only 8,000 runners (as opposed to the 25,000 at the MCM 2000). Everybody out there supporting the runners were incredible! Thanks for your support!! Organization was great with the one exception being the bag-check. It was horribly disorganized and it was a nightmare trying to get our bags after the race. Organizers need to use a system similar to the MCM where there are rows of tables lined up by number. All in all, it was a great experience!

Not suitable for back-of-the-packers!

The finish was great, set up about a block from the White House at Freedom Plaza. The medals were great too, enameled with the Lincoln monument and Capitol on them. 6 hours was the official time limit for the marathon. And they meant it! I wrote them as soon as the race was announced to ask them to reconsider this limit, but for various reasons they stuck to the time limit. Do not, repeat, DO NOT CONSIDER this marathon next year unless you can run a sub-6-hour marathon with your eyes closed and one arm tied behind your back! They opened the streets at just over a 6:00 pace and moved the slower folks to the sidewalks along Pennsylvania Avenue. Unfortunately for those back-of-the-packers, that meant (after doing 25+ miles on foot) battling heavy pedestrian crowds of sightseers in the middle of downtown and lots of traffic and having to stop and wait at every single block for the lights to change and the cars to stop. I felt truly awful for them, and tried to give them some good cheering as they straggled into the finish line. This is a VERY back-of-the-packer unfriendly race finish unless they make some major changes next year!!!

Great course; bad baggage.

I just finished this race with four friends and we all had PR's today—weather was great, well staffed water stops, great downhill from 21 to end. Loved the course and the spectator turnout was MUCH better than I was anticipating, after having been 'spoiled' by Marine Corps crowds for three years. Congrats to the organizers, but two comments: add some official food stops and FIX THE BAGGAGE PICK UP! Funnel runners through baggage shortly after finishing, and let us dig for our own bags—we'll spot them much faster than the 1+ hour waits today.

It should be great!

I am truly hoping that this will be a great marathon! I think it is great that is is being run throughout DC (unlike Marine which is heavily in VA). With 6,000 people already registered, it is much larger than most marathons and is on it's way to becoming one of the super-tanker marathons. The amount of aid stations looks to be substantial so as long as they keep the weather cool for us, we'll be set for a great time!

Hopeful!

I just registered for this race, and am looking forward to it very much. It will be my 13th marathon, and I have faith it will be terrific.

Skeptical

My biggest concern is that the crowd support will not be that of the Marine Corps. $85 bucks and only one power gel station? With only 6000 or so registered to date, I also worry about attendance. It being my first marathon, I was looking for a large crowd and a large field of runners...

Too expensive

An $85 entry fee for an untested event around here seems very high to me, and the 'official' explanation for this sounds a little suspect. Who knows? It could turn out to be a great race, but I've got to wonder...
