Excellent race for an easy double

John, thanks for making the commemorative shirts for running Breakers and Mystic. We enjoyed the races again this year and will probably run both again next year. While the post-race food was sparse for the people running the double, the $10 in tokens provided some great Chinese food at Yummy Yummy after the race. The volunteers did a great job again this year.

Overall C+

I am ambivalent about this race. The course ran through some waterfront areas - nice but not especially charming. I think there is room for improvement: 1) With a 10 a.m. official start, definitely plan and publish the opportunity for early start - frankly, I'd move the time up to 8 a.m., and still have an early start. 2) Course map was very busy/confusing (don't use double-ended arrows, or have two arrows pointing at one another) and course marking/directions were not very clear - at least a dozen people missed the first loop, didn't realize it until mile 4/5, and had to go back. 3) A few more porta-potties along the course would have been nice.... 4) The only food for the five-hour finishers was bread and water. I stuck around to see friends finish, and two boxes of sub sandwiches were found - talk about manna. I was starving and they were delicious! There wasn't any control on how many subs folks took, so perhaps that's why they ran out in the first place? I am glad to have completed this race, but would not run it again.

Good course, but refreshments a bit lacking

This was my second marathon, and I thought Mystic was a good race. It was a very scenic course, and although the spectators were sparse, the ones who were there were quite supportive. Traffic was never a concern, and I enjoyed seeing the lead runners as the course looped around. I finished around four hours, and even though I was in the top half of the finishers, there wasn't much left for refreshments - mini loaves of bread, a few yogurt containers, and the dregs of clam chowder (which wasn't appealing to me post-race). Organizers could do a better job on the food front, but otherwise I'd recommend the race to others.

Beautiful Run

It couldn't have been a better day for running; sunny (but not too sunny), a slight breeze & mid-50s. The course is beautiful and while hilly, except for the monster at 23-24, it wasn't too bad. The course is a confusing one, but there were plenty of marshals available. Two problems, though: 1) some of the mile markers were off, 2) due to unanticipated problems I came in much later that I expected and there was little food left. This evidently had been a problem in previous marathons. I would love to take another crack at this course.

Small, But Well Done!

This was my 21st marathon and 8th state. I initially intended to make Hartford my CT marathon, but other priorities got in the way of that plan. I'm not disappointed that MCM turned out to be my CT marathon. I knew it was relatively small compared to others I have completed, but it was well done. I was especially impressed with how well the course was marked and the abundance of road marshals insuring that you made the right turn. Water stops were plentiful and the course, though a bit winding (READ: lots of turns), had some very scenic spots. I would recommend this marathon to others. Thanks for a job well done.

A job well done!

Thanks for putting on another well-organized event. I have particpiated very year in either the full marathon, relay or 10 miler. I have enjoyed it every year and look forward to many more. the two small hills at the end are certainly a challenge. Not many spectators but the ones out there were awesome.

pretty place but confusing

This was day 2 of my first double marathon weekend. The course was nice and went through some very pretty neighborhoods. You passed runners many times going the opposite way than you...this was good but also a bit confusing, especially towards the end when marathon mind takes over. There were lots of other double race runners out so you got to keep up with familiar faces. Overall I liked the race...the race directors and state park were well prepared to handle the volume of traffic so it was easy to get in and out of the park...and the outdoor but very warm shower at the camp sites was a nice touch for those of us that were leaving and could not get a 3pm check out from the local hotel.

Overall a very well organized and enjoyable event

This race was my seventh marathon. I thought it was organized extremely well. The crowds were a little sparse, but the spectators that were present were full of positive encouragement. Lots of locals came out to cheer us on. All of the other runners I interacted with on the course were very friendly and encouraging. Since this is a smaller marathon there was plenty of room to run without getting elbowed or bumped around. There were also plenty of water stops. The course was very enjoyable - some rolling hills but none to really break your spirit. There was plenty of traffic control. Lots of race marshalls keeping the runners going in the right direction and the traffic away. My friends were able to get to a few different vantage points to cheer me on. However, there were some resticted traffic areas that hindered spectators from getting to some areas of the course. The weather was perfect high 50's, little wind, some clouds, lots of great foliage. I was slightly disappointed with the lack of refreshments at the end of the course for us back of the packers. When I finished, the course was still going to be open for one more hour and there were almost no refreshments left and most of the tents were being packed up. I found this a little depressing. I understand the day was coming to a close but having everything being shut down in my face put a very slight damper on my experince. Overall this is a very very good marathon. I would recommend it to runners who are looking to run a 'smaller' event.

A nice, small, picturesque marathon

This is a good marathon for those that just want to run a nice course....and not necessarily depend on spectators to cheer them on. The course is often entertaining with great waterfront views, with occasional diversions through various neighborhoods and into the town of Niantic. With the course being an out-and-back....with an additional mini-out and back loop at mile 5&6 you get to see the race leaders twice in the race. This race doesn't exactly bring out the Niantic crowds. Many of the homeowners in the neighborhoods on the course were taking advantage of the great weather to do some yardwark. Some of them would drop their rakes and cheer the runners. Before the race many runners were concerned about the many sharp turns on this race (some were already complaining that it was too many before the race even started). I didn't mind the turns at all. They were all well marked....and the trickier ones always had a volunteer pointing the way. Multiple turns won't kill a good time for a marathon. If there were this many turns on a 5k race I could see the point of those complaining...however not on a marathon. The only hill worth mentioning is the the one at mile 23. All the others are short and manageable. The 23 mile hill is a bit steeper and more drawn out, but it isn't a killer. Good course management in the early portion will leave you ready to tackle this one. Regarding the on-course drink, Powerade, and GU Gel....no major complaints from me. Those looking to qualify for Boston, who have done at least a minor amount of training for hills should like this course. The small crowd allows to run your pace right away. All in all.....I'm glad I ran Mystic. Not sure if I will be back though as I will be looking for different Marathon experiences to add to my resume.

Disappointed

It's unfortunate that after running five hours, there was no food left except bread and water. It's hard to take that after paying $65.00 there was no food to eat... and we got no apology from the organizers either. This is probably my last time running this race. I hope that next year there will be food for the slower marathon runners.

A nice challenge.

New 50 stater friends convinced me to do this while at Breakers marathon. A few of us decided this would be our first back to back. I chose to start on time because there has not been much competition in my age group, but learned it was 60 and over while getting a massage. Gulp. Not a chance. Lots of other support before race. Flush toilets, good parking and I think there was food available also. Relay buses created excitement when they nearly drove through the finish line before race started. Course was marked very well with both tall mile markers and arrows on the street. Somehow, I managed to miss something and ended up at mile 23 after having last seen mile 18! Didn't print my directions. So, I took on an extra few miles for this race when I went back to get on course due to my negligence. The man who directed me was very helpful and kept watch over me as I was almost the last person, and the oldest. I think they might have been a bit worried, but I was fine. Earler when tackling some hills, Medical truck stayed behind me for a while. That truck must need new brakes by now. Again, they were watching out for me. Would like to have had some fruit and peanut butter or something in addition to liquids at the stops. I did carry something, but finished it. The man who was watching out for me was a 50-100 miler and gave me an energy bar. The hills kept my arms and legs pumping and kept me praying and singing. Walked the last 2 miles in the park...alone till I heard steps shortly before finish and I had to pick it up to not be the last one in. Overall, I enjoyed it and was elated that I did a back-to-back and had new friends waiting and cheering for me at the finish line. The $10 local money was a great idea. Shows local support and was used for supper after the race. Race director was very cordial and patient when being asked questions early and later in the day. Found out I came in third of three in my age group. So, I get an award for having started on time! Thanks. It's great to be this age. Going for 50, so it'll be a few years before I get back. Course variety, ease of parking and support along the way are best features of the event. You can always get food later or bring enough. Try it!

Relay teams

I have run this marathon when it was once the East Lyme Marathon, but for the past three years I have been running with five close friends as a relay team. We are all over 50 and we all run fairly well. We were all a little disappointed that there was no grand master division. A nice addition to the race for next year, is adding that category. There are many of us out there running.

Great Experience

The course traveled through very scenic parks, small beaches and beautiful waterfront homes complete with friendly neighbors. The crowds though sparse (expected in a small marathon) which makes it a little lonely for us 5-hour runners, but those spectators out there gave full support, which is much appreciated. The course itself was much hillier that the organizer published, especially toward the last few miles. Plentiful easy parking at the start and the post-race food was plentiful and more than adequate but the medical (had to beg for an icepack) and massage tents were closed by the time the slower runners were done, and we are the ones who needed them the most. For a local marathon it was a great experience and I highly recommend it.

Scenic and enjoyable

The race was enjoyable with a lot of friendly people. Pros: Map of race course looked confusing but there was ample support to keep you going in the right direction. Race directors did an anti-rain dance for the day of the race. Great after-race food spread. Massage tent was nice but closed down to those running slower than about a 4:45 time. Plenty of parking at the starting point. Cons: Sparse at some points but not a problem. Hills took their toll at the end.

My favorite so far for 2005

I loved this marathon. Great course, great weather, great organization... lousy post-race food at the finish but who cares?! We got $10 each to spend around town. Had a great lunch the day before at a local pizza place and used the $10 tokens. Wonderful! This course and its well staffed hydration stations made for a wonderful day to PR. The course is great. It has lots of turns so you are always awake. The marshals at the turns won't let you get lost. There are some hills, but they are good hills. The ones that challenge but don't kill you. This was a very fun day. Thank you.

Great marathon.

I have run this marathon 4 times. Before the race even started I was thinking that I would take a break from running marathons (this being my 14th in 5 years), but as I started running I realized that I really enjoy this race and will definitely be back next year.

good course for a great time

The course was scenic with views of the saltwater and marshes. Hills on the course were few and short. Runners were supportive and friendly. Crowd was a little sparse, but supportive. Traffic control (autos) was excellent. Good safety and medical support. This is a safe run. Course entrance was easy to find and plenty of parking. Easy registration pick-up, accurate information and great food (and a lot of it) at the end. Runners perks, especially 'Lyme Dollars,' were a good idea, but hard to reach participating stores. Not good announcement organization before and after the race. Announcers was enthusiastic, but directions were not clear. For example, 'The marathon course starts on the trail closest to the water.' What water? Some names were called out at the finish and runners congratulated. Some were not. Those were were not called out felt slighted, including me. The awards ceremony was totally confusing and so many mistakes were made I wonder if my time was even recorded, since my time was faster than the third-place finisher, unless I heard it wrong. Speakers were garbled.

I would run this again

There was lots of food and Powerade and water at the water stops. The volunteers were fabulous. There was live music and a DJ. The course was safe and well marked. It was nice to run by Long Island Sound. In addition to a long-sleeved t-shirt, each marathoner received $10 in East Lyme dollars. The marathon is named Mystic Places, which encompasses the area around Mystic. There were free massages at the end of the race and lots of food and beverages. There was plenty of onsite parking.

Good Race

Mystic was a fun marathon. With the exception of the casinos (which are not exactly nearby) you are out in the middle of nowhere. Niantic is a little village with neat shops and places to eat nearby, but Mystic is 20-30 miles away. The course offered great foliage, seascapes, beautiful homes, a quaint village, and HILLS! The course was not very conducive to spectators because they could not get around very well. The race was small and pretty well organized for a small event. Do not expect much for the expo. Overall, it was a good time, but be ready for the hills.

Decent Local Marathon

This was my first marathon, so expectations were probably a bit on the high side. I know the area fairly well, and the shore can be quite spectacular. The course was fast to start, but is certainly hilly towards the end. I don't ever recall running a more difficult finish before. My positive comments are: good size, good scenery, and that's about it. Organization was lacking, especially with the busses that were supposed to take spectators to mile 17 - but there was about 1 shuttle every hour. Another major complaint was the shortage of port-a-potties. I think there were 6, which may have been adequate for the runners only. But, we all bring fans along - and they use the bathroom as well. More johns, more shuttles would have made organization at least a 4. The course was also a real downer. You run 26.2 miles in what 'feels like' about 2 square miles. The course felt 'jammed' and you really have to pay attention to signage. To boot, we all had to jam up with runners in the other race as well (half or 10k...can't remember). Overall - a good experience for my first race, but it can definitely be improved upon.

Well run but not the event for us slow folks.

The race was well organized and everybody was very helpful. The energy at the water stations and in the neighborhoods was great but I did feel a little abandoned for the last 5 miles. Also the help at the finish line was great but almost everything else had closed up when I crossed at just over 5 hours.

Deceptively hilly and very poorly supported

Although reasonably well organized, not recommended if you are looking for a flat or well supported marathon. It is clear from the absolute dearth of spectators that the local residents resent the marathoners running through their 'posh' neighborhoods. Also, the marathon course is over 20 miles away from Mystic, which is deceptive if you are expecting to be running anywhere close to famous tourist attractions such as Mystic Seaport/Mystic Pizza. Finally, the last 6 miles are very tough going; headwinds, hills and no supportors to encourage. Overall a very poor experience.

Many positive features

I reviewed comments I entered about this immediately after the event (posted below on 10/27/04). Upon a second review, these comments were unfairly negative. Apologies to the sponsors. The sponsors provide runners with a high-quality marathon experience. The course is scenic and relatively flat. Course management is excellent. Runners for whom a marathon is a personal experience will love this race. A strong feature of the race is the inclusion of a myriad of relay teams--including a family division. The exuberance of these teams at the 5-9-17-23 mile points of the race adds to the experience of the race. My only disappointment with the race was with the awards given to age group and relay team winners--a disappointment that influenced my prior unfair comments. If you want a well-organized marathon, one with an excellent course (even the last mile is marked out in 1/8 mile increments), I recommend this race for both veteran and first-time runners.

Incredible views, flat course for first-timer

Well organized event. Showed up 10 minutes prior to start and was able to get to the line on time. Beautiful scenery - Giant's Neck Beach and Black Point. Relatively flat - a welcome bonus. Ample water stations. Unfortunately, not a lot of spectators. Overall a great event for my first marathon.

Well organized race with scenic course

This race was very well organized throughout. Course tours the day before, lots of aid stations, quick posting of results. It's a scenic course, mostly flat but with hills around 7-8 miles, 15-16, and 22-24. It was just the size I like - about 700 finishers - not so large that it takes a long time to cross the start line and get up to speed and not so small that you feel like you're running by yourself. Spectators are concentrated at aid stations and a few other spots on the course, so don't expect screaming crowds throughout.

Very good mid-size New England Marathon

This was my 10th marathon overall and my 3rd Mystic Places. My other marathons have mostly been small New England marathons (<5000 runners). Overall, Mystic Places is a small/mid-size, well organized marathon on an out-and-back course of moderate difficulty. Water/Powerade stops are well placed with capable volunteers. The course is mostly flat with many fantastic ocean views but does include 3 or 4 hills to break things up. The start/finish is in a state park with ample parking, live music, flush toilets as well as porta-johns, and many expo tents. Post-race food is good. It is not too hectic or crowded for first-timers and it can be a Boston qualifier if you have it in you.

First marathon, pretty and hilly!

I wanted to do my first marathon close to home and have it not be a large one. This fit the bill, but I wish I knew about all the rolling hills. I ran on hills, but did a lot of my long runs flat. I also wish there was food left for the ones finishing 4:30-on. There were a few mini donuts and some yogurt, but all the sandwiches, bagels, cookies, etc. were gone. : ( The scenery was gorgeous though this time of year and took your mind off the pain toward the end. I also liked all the aid stations they had. I didn't need my fuel belt as I did in other races.

Nice for runners, hectic for spectators...

This was marathon #2 for me and I expected a little bit less from an organizational perspective than my last one (no Gu on course, no pacing groups, etc.). In some ways, I was pleasantly surprised; in other ways, just surprised. But there were water/Powerade stands everywhere (well sporadically - sometimes 1 mile apart, sometimes it seemed like forever). Spectators were great when you found them... but it was difficult for them to get to you. The race offered shuttles to the 17th mile, which is a great idea - but my family had to wait an hour for the next one and didn't end up taking it so they didn't miss my finish. Also, there was NO INFORMATION for either the runner or the spectator that the race would loop back to the start in 2 miles. Again, my family missed out on an opportunity to see me! My family asked the crew whether the marathon would be circling back because the map was quite confusing and the crew-person didn't even know. Overall it was a nice course with friendly help. But help out the runners and the spectators by getting the spectators to the right viewing spots. I sure could have used a boost at mile 17!!!

Serious runners only for this race......

I guess I only like large marathons; few spectators, and the relatively small number of runners means that this is also a 'lonely' marathon unless you run at a faster pace (which I definitely do not). More than a few significant hills added to the challenge. All in all, I didn't find this fun, but serious/competitive runners might appreciate it more.

Great mid/small size marathon

A great marathon if you prepare. There were mild hills, but nothing worse than a brief New England incline. I actually enjoyed the hills and turns as it broke up the monotony of running straight and flat for 26.2 miles. I was running around a 3-hour pace and there were plenty of race directors telling you where to turn the whole time. I've also read that the beginning was confusing, but not if you read the map and take a tour, and who can't follow the person in front of you? The 10-mile course added a small amount of confusion, but all you had to do was take one right instead of taking a left. Great number of water/Powerade stops, my only problem was I wish they had more stops that handed out bananas, oranges, bagels, and/or PowerGel, but that's me being picky.

An elite, not a populist race

This was a race run for the sponsors. It was not a race for the middle-pack runners who participated. The sponsors apparently had lots of money as evidenced by the large cash prizes and extravagant expenditures on a live, top-flight band. If this money were invested in making the race an event for runners, the event would be improved greatly. By an event for runners, I mean more and better prizes for runners (e.g., relay team winners came away with a hat, a token that is more reminiscent of local rec races than a well-funded marathon). Other items: 5-year categories for prizes; a raffle might help; better facilities at the finish; opening the showers would help; a race director who showed a little bit of interest in the winners beyond the elite runners may have added to the awards ceremony. I have no interest in paying a steep fee to run in a race where a group of Ethiopeans run away from the field. Advice to the organizers: Take a look at the Madison Triathlon run in your town. This trathlon is an event for the competitors. If you took lessons from the triathlon, you could improve the marathon greatly. As it stands I would likely not run this race again.

An enjoyable low key marathon.

After running high profile marathons in the past 2 years (London/New York) I found this a nice change of pace with a friendly small town feel. While the Marathon has Mystic in the name it is oddly run nowhere near Mystic, CT. A nice, fairly flat, course with a hill at the 23 mile mark. Nice set-up for children at the start with activities.

Good Race to Finish, but not a PR or BQ Course!

As an experienced racer, I was hoping for a BQ course - not scenery or ambiance if you will. The website is not very clear as to the details for BQ'ing, nor for the real elements of the course which are high winds/hills (moderate)/winding. Its quite a nice venue to see scenery wise and enjoy, but don't lull into it as a PR or BQ - you can't change geography and you will be fighting it. The people are great however so no PR or BQ on agenda - enter and enjoy!!

Personal best

This was my third marathon after running Baltimore and New York. Far fewer crowds both in the race and on the course, but very nice. Mostly folks in front of their homes. Who needs crowds anyway? I never noticed them on my training runs. Though not completely flat, the course has only a few bumps, so it would be a good race if you are going for a qualifier. I made the Boston cut in this race. The volunteers were the best. It is a pretty complicated course in terms of turns and there were several at each turn. They were encouraging and helpful. The aid station volunteers were right out there with the cups and clearly shouting out what they had. Plenty of water and Powerade at each, but bring your own gel. Although the site says 17 aid stations, you pass some of them twice, so there is at least one a mile. The town of Niantic is at 16 to 17 miles, you run down Main and back. My family was able to catch me there twice and then shuttle to the finish in the park without a sweat. The finish folk were terrific. They were announcing finishers by name as they came down the stretch and even making lively encouragements over the PA. Excellent medical presence at the finish. An EMT walked up to me, looked me in the eye and asked if I wanted water or Powerade, and offered me a chair. Only suggestion that I have to the organizers is they work out a late checkout with the participating hotels. Because it is a Sunday race, a lot of folks won't stay over Sunday night, but could use a room to go back to shower. Overall, a great experience.

Race is growing

Like any new race it takes time to grow in numbers. They had a good turn-out for all events. Although the course has a lot of turns, it is well marked by friendly volunteers. What spectators that did turn out were very supportive. The course is rolling and can sap your energy if you go out too hard. The two years that I've run, it has been organized. I'm not pleased results are not available a day after the event. Even large races make them available that night. It was hard to find the results at the end of the race and nobody seemed to know where they might be posted. Good scenic race overall for New England area.

Pleasant Suprise

Coming off a back injury, I was kinda forced into a corner to run this race. It was definately not my first choice, especially considering all the negative comments in this forum. The course really wasn't all that hilly. It seemed quite flat for at least the first half, and then rolling is the best way to describe the second part. Plenty of parking. No indoor pre-race place to warm up, but that's what cars are for. A little pricey ($65- but this was a race morning fee- the price was much lower a few weeks ago), with no 'goodies.' Nice shirt, nice medal, friendly people, great bands along the way (except the kazoo-playing one was a little odd). Not a ton of spectators, but that's o.k.- fellow runners helped each other out. A lot of turns to the course, but that was good because you didn't have the wind (a little brisk) in your face for long stretches at a time. I only spent about 20 minutes total even remotely worried about getting pegged by a passing car- traffic control was good overall. I never was confused on which way to turn and the mile markers were fine. Beautiful town, views of LIS, and fall colors. I'd do this one again. Even with the somewhat blah weather, this one is a keeper.

Too many turns, confusing course.

I didn't like the course. I found it to be very confusing because of the twists and turns. The lack of warm indoor facilities was a downer too, especially on a windy, rainy day.

Good/Moderate

The course was surprisingly very hilly. Spectator support was good at the very beginning and the end. Very limited support through the middle (only through town). When you really needed help at mile 20 it was only residential homes. This also was a problem with vehicles wanting to pass you. The last problem I had was the mile markers were not visible to me. You don't always run on the side of the road - especially through a busy town where there are tons of people on sidewalks and spilling out onto the road. For my first marathon it was not a good choice. For a PR it is not a good choice. I should also add the downhill that was very uncomfortable in the last three miles. Ouch. On the upside it was very, very beautiful - lots of water scenery and beautiful cottages to peer at (if you so choose). Good luck and enjoy. I would do it again.

Beautiful course

This is a beautiful course, unfortunately the weather didn’t cooperate and it rained for the later half of the day, with anyone running over 3 hours finishing in the rain. There were a few hills but none of them were really significant. The whole out-and-back course is within about 100 feet of sea level. The course passes through some very nice neighborhoods and the residents really turned out to support the runners. The start was a bit confusing with the looping within the state park, but there were plenty of volunteers to direct traffic. This was the first race I’ve been to where the race organizers had arranged for bus tours of the course on the day before, which was a nice touch. Nice expo too.

Good Race With A Mildly Challenging Course

I thought this was a very good race. I've never been drawn to races for the scenery but the course is beautiful, running largely along the Long Island Sound in East Lyme and Niantic. It can be a bit windy at times, and has a few bumps to contend with, but its mildly challenging hills aren't bad at all. It was flawlessly marked, with volunteers calling out splits at every mile and there was plenty to drink along the way. There was music here and there, and this provided some energizing moments. Thank you, DJ man. I prefer mid-sized races to huge jog-fests and Mystic was dead-on in terms of numbers. The field size was such that I was never without a target ahead of me, which I think can be one of the most difficult obstacles when running a smaller race. The crowds seemed to be placed strategically along the course —providing intermittent support from beginning to end, without the 'in-your-face' throngs you'll see at huge marathons. All told, the course is quite fair though a little challenging at times, the organization is very competent and the support from the community is uplifting.

My first marathon

As this was my first marathon I have nothing to compare it to, but I will say that I enjoyed it and appreciated the enthusiastic spectators, even if they were few and far between. It was very windy and wet, but I was actually grateful that it wasn't warm and sunny, as I think it's more difficult to run on warm days. I was prepared for the hills as I had talked to others who had done the race before, plus I had trained on hills much worse than the ones here. If I could have changed anything I would say that more spectators would have made the last five miles or so a little more motivating, especially going up those hills. Nonetheless, the race was well organized and I enjoyed my first experience.

Fun Race

Overall, this marathon was a fun experience. I enjoyed the scenery, ocean views, foliage, and Rocky Neck State Park. The hills were not bad, if you train regularly on hills, you'll hardly notice these. The headwinds along the Sound were tougher than any hill in this race. If you're looking for crowds lining the entire race route, forget it. The volunteers and spectators who were out there were very enthusiastic and I saw quite a few after the 20-mile mark. Lots of water/Powerade stops along the course, and you get a finisher's medal and great T-shirt as well. I thought the race was well organized, I had no problems with mile markers, turns along the course, or anything else. The weather did not cooperate with the rain and high winds, but it made finishing this race all the more satisfying. My wife and I spent a long weekend in Mystic at a Bed and Breakfast and had a great time. I would recommend this race!

Reasonable sized field makes this race great for the first-timer. Awesome fall colors make the miles fly by. I'll run this race every year.

Overall, a good event; cruelly placed late hills

(Ran in 2003). Overall, this event is a good one; only a few minor drawbacks. Course scenery is nice, hitting fall colors and seaside. Turns and loops of course might annoy some. Traffic is nonexistent or light. Spectating by car can be difficult in places other than start/finish and 15-18 mile areas. Expo and post-race events in park are very good for a mid-size race, and includes some inflatables for children to play on. Pasta dinner hours (4-6 pm) could end slightly later to be more accessible/convenient. Course hills aren't huge, but the ones appearing at 20, 22, and 24 aren't very welcome. Consider weather if you're thinking of this for a PR/BQ... even with a loop course, the rain and 15-30 mph winds slowed people down in '03. Info tent had no one there at times, but a staff or volunteer could be tracked down for questions.

Terrible Marathon

Small marathon. Very poor bus tour of course, pointed out the 2 million-dollar homes and did not concentrate on rolling hills, sharp turns, gusting winds of L.I. Sound, etc. Runners are concerned with the course, not real estate, duh, hello!! Course has many rolling hills, in town sharp and confusing turns and a huge amount of wind. I ran race in 25-30 mph wind, driving rain. Course volunteers actually left the course at the 20-mile mark, when the wind and rain became heavy. Timer mile marks were also terrible. I will never run this marathon again. This was my 15th marathon and was supposed to be another Boston qualifier - forget it. I ran Boston 2000-2001, 2002. DO NOT USE THIS RACE AS A BOSTON QUALIFIER. Use Steamtown, Wineglass, Chicago, or even Philadelphia. This marathon is a real loser. To end a 'great weekend' the return traffic to Pa. on Rt. 95 South at 3:00 pm was absolutely horrendous with leaf hoppers. Save your time, money, power and prestige and do not run the Mystic Marathon.

Awesome!

The only thing that could have been better was the weather, and since you couldn't do anything to change that, it was an ideal marathon. The support along the way was fantastic. Plenty of water stops, bananas, oranges and even Snickers candy bars. All the effort bringing it together and making it happen is greatly appreciated.

Better than expected!

I just loved the course and I can see why people come back - I know I will. Hills weren't that bad and it was nice that someone was on top of the last telling us it was all downhill from there. The wind helped cool us down on a warm day. The race was very well organized - lots of water/Powerade, nice mile markers (though I missed 2), and easy start & finish. The only downside for me was that there were only a few driveable spectator viewing areas for friends/family because so many of the roads nearby were closed off. But the nice ocean views and lovely homes helped pass the time well. Oh, and I did see plenty people with headphones - nowhere did I see them listed as prohibited.

Great Marathon -- Highly Recommended

I enjoyed the beautiful scenery of Rocky Neck State Park. The ocean views were outstanding as well as the beautiful fall colors. The gently rolling hills keep the course interesting. There were plenty of aid stations manned by enthusiastic volunteers. There was a nice party afterwards with a band, beer, clam chowder, bagels, bananas, and yogurt. I will surely run this marathon again.

Beautiful course, nice mix of fall foliage and views of the Long Island Sound. Overall pretty flat, but a few challenging hills mixed in. The race was very well run, with lots of water/Powerade stops along the way. I would recommend this race.

Very well organized...beautiful course

I loved this course. I came in after reading everyone's comments and thought I would just get through it... my first impression was how wonderfully organized the morning packet pick-up area was... then the wonderful facilities. It was nice to have a choice of Porta's & regular bathrooms. You can't say enough about the course, yes it's rolling, but that just gives your muscles a break changing the group used. The relay areas and all of the spectators really kept this middle-of-the-pack runner going and motivated. I will definitely run this again next year.

Deceptive advertisement of flat course

I lost all respect for Amby Burfoot. He endorsed this course as flat and fast. It was not flat or fast, but all rolling hills. The race was great and did not need the false billing. I picked it as my Boston Qualifyer based on these representations. The race directors should have more integrity, as should Amby Burfoot, than to misrepresent a course.

Great Race! with alot of variety!

This was my third overall marathon, first Mystic, and I wish I had driven the course first, so i could have prepared myself better for all of the turns. It was a great day, with all of the typical marathon conditions, not alot of spectators, but not every marathon is like Boston. Relay runners added to the fun, and the few hills at the end were not that bad. if they were at mile 13 you would never hear about them. amenities were good, pre and post race massages, free beer, music, food if you wanted it. The only downfall for me was the race memorabillia was not dated for the day, so if you want to get a hat with the year you ran on it, you have to do it yourself. Nice certificate comes a few weeks later to remind you of your accomplishment. Still undecided if I will run this particular race this year. But would definately reccomend it. very fun day.

Fantastic course . . . worth the trip

This is equal to the prettiest I've ever run . . . but alas the Sugar River Trail Marathon in Wisconsin is no more. The course and the fans were great. 800 or so people is a good number too. p.s. If you want a totally flat course run Chicago or run on a track.

They lied. The course is not flat, it's very hilly

I was extremely disappointed and felt so bloody deceived that running this beautiful course was a nightmare. The rolling hills never stopped. Surely, that must be the last one, I kept saying because they said this course was one of the flattest. Compared to what? I should have asked myself before spending $500 on a weekend get away marathon. How could my fellow marathoners mislead me? I thought better of runners, now I know that people, even runners, will say anything to make more money. I read on their web site that this course is one of the flattest in the United States. Baloney. I e-mailed them after the run. I still have not received a response from the directors of the race. They must say that because they think those hills are not hills. They are, and I'm not the only one who thinks so. If I had known that I would not have signed up (and convinced my 1st time marathon brother-in-law to come with me) or I would have properly prepared myself by training for hills.(We both trained on the very flat south shore of Long Island.) This was my sixth marathon.

The last marathon I would recommend

The course was advertized as 'flat,' but should be labeled 'some hills.' I found that having to contend with autos, bicyclists, rollerbladers and pedestrians annoying. I have never had this problem at any other marathon I have run. The post-race food tent was a bit of a disappointment. I have run marathons in four other venues and found all superior. I would not recommend this race.

Beautiful course, but definitely not flat

The website advertises this course as 'One of the country's flattest and most scenic oceanfront routes.' Well, it's half true. The scenery is gorgeous, but the 'rolling hills' are poorly timed toward the end of the race. The hills are not at all steep--just very long upgrades at the most inopportune time! The organization was great for a small race. The spectators were fabulous if relatively few in number--but their sincerity and enthusiasm more than compensated for their number. MysticPlaces Marathon was a great run. Had I been prepared for those hills, it would have been even better.

Great experience from a First Timer!

This was my first Marathon. I couldn't have been happier with everything including the weather. From what I read about last year, any problems with traffic, congestion were taken care of. It does get lonely in later parts of the race- wish there were more spectators. But all the fans that were there were very supportive. Course is full of turns but always someone there to direct you. As far as hills, you can't have a 26 mile course that is totally flat! Sincere thanks to all who helped make this a memorable experience for me!

Scenic course, well run event

If you don't mind a troblesome wind and some ill timed hills (between 22-24 miles, this is a really nice event. Course is about as scenic as you are going to find, good organization, plenty of aid stations with sports drinks, decent food tent and nice overall 'feel'. Good size for me, about 800 runners, lots of relay runners, which can get annoying at times, but I'm nitpicking.

wonderfull first experience

How blessed we were with the weather! The organization was perfect – no relay buses as there were complains last year, beautiful scenic course, enough water and sport drinks, great people support from everybody out there from people on the streets to runners themselves, nice rolling hills in mid-path and out-and-back course lets you see the front pack and encourage slower folks. A couple of minor complains no marathon can go without – practically no spectators between miles 19 to 25 when you need them most and lots of hills at miles 22-25 – not horrible ones but oh, boy, they feel miserable at that point of the race. Overall – great job, thanks to everybody! I met my goal and many nice people, loved the experience and ready to do it again!

Great management/Scenic course

This is the first time I ran this race. The course was scenic and although I was racing I couldn't help but notice the beautiful views while running in these communities. The course is relatively flat but there are a few hills to be aware of that can sap your energy. The race was well managed, volunteers, and spectators very good. I recommend this one. I will be back.

This was a very well organized event. Lots of fun, great volunteers and spectators. Plenty of water and sports drinks along the course. I only wish I had known about the hills. In my opionion this is not a flat course (as its billed on the races web site). If I had known I would have trained for it differently. Even with the hills I will be back to run this one again.

Nice low key marathon

Nice race to run. Course is fairly flat. An uphill grade between miles 21 - 24 can be a bit dis-heartening but not a killer by any stretch. Only 'complaint' about the organization was at the end of the race, It took me an hour and a half to depart the park due to traffic issues. Hopefully this is resolved this year as I intend to return. I highly recommend this race for anyone who's looking for a low key yet well run and fairly fast course.

The course is beautiful and everything was great! My only concerns were: 1. There was not enough water for runners towards the end 2. First aid was nowhere to be found. fun for the whole family

I needed to check Connecticut off my marathon list. Great, grass-roots feel. Scenic water views, enough small rolling hills to notice, wind bothered some. Pre-race and post race events were enjoyable (beaver brown band, clam chowder, moon-walks, etc...). route tour was helpful. Drinks and directional assistance were abudant. Volunteers especially CofC were outstanding. Areas for improvement were a 15 minute traffic delay at start, not many spectators, and high cost of kids race. great job, lots of fun.

Beautiful smallish race with a few wrinkles

If you want a smallish and highly scenic marathon, this is a good bet, though it did have a few wrinkles. The course was very beautiful, going through woods, lovely tree-lined residential areas, long stretches along water, and some along the main street of Niantic. The event had a pleasant small-community feel to it, with organizers and volunteers being very, very nice and trying hard to help, and with a friendly bunch of runners too. The course was less flat than advertised but quite fair and manageable; there was a tough headwind at times, including a long isolated stretch along water from around 20-23, and a couple of hills after that. The roads were narrow but I had plenty of room to run; my chip time was just 1 minute faster than gun time even though I did not start way up front, and as I recall within a mile I was running freely (maybe too much so - my third mile was one minute faster than the pace I intended!). The course had lots of turns but was very well marked and had volunteers at turns. Miles were clearly marked and they had split times when I wanted them. Fluid support was just adequate for me - I wouldn't want to have missed any stops. You don't get some amenities you'd get in a bigger, more established race - my concerns were tight roads and occasionally having to coexist with relay buses in tight spots (once I had to stop for a bit when a car and bus together blocked the way); water and sport drink stops at unpredictable spots, and not clearly marked which was which (but volunteers did clearly call out what they had); not much visible first aid on course, which wasn't a problem for me but could have been. There was a delayed start due to traffic getting in, but I didn't mind that, and I didn't really care that many stretches were hard for spectators to get to, but they are. Having an out and back course was fine by me too, because it's all gorgeous and it does let us plodders see the leaders (and also those even slower than us). There weren't tons of spectators but that was OK by me. Overall a very positive experience, mainly for course beauty, reasonable degree of difficulty, and friendly feel of event.

What a GREAT place to run 26.2 miles!

This was my first marathon, although I've been a runner for many, many years. Having nothing to compare this too - I can only say that it was a positive experience in every sense. The view was spectacular; the course was challenging (there were more hills than I expected), but not impossible; the crowds were encouraging; and the organization was just as it should be - stressless! I would definitely recommend this marathon to novice and experienced runners.

Beautiful course and scenery.

John B. and his staff did a fine job putting this on for the first time and all the volunteers were exceptional. Fabulous time of year for scenery and foliage as the course itself almost entirely wound itself through beautiful communities. Course had it's share of rolling hills and was a touch difficult. Plenty of nice amenities -- overall good organization (but PLEASE fix the morning traffic getting into the park!!), plenty of great accommodations --just call Shore Chamber of Commerce, pasta party was included at nearby private resort including fireworks! and Frank Shorter on hand. Expo could use improvement. Very sparce, but enthusiastic crowds. If we want crowds or a more exciting course, there's always NYC or Chicago, LA, Marine Corps etc. More bands would definitely be an added plus. The finish was good -- also nice t-shirts, medals, fruit, delicious clam chowder. The race director personally called us back to lend assistance a number of times in the months leading to the race. The 9 of us from LI/NYC were mostly pleased. Thank you all for an enjoyable weekend!

Great way to soak in the fall!

I really enjoyed this race. The scenery was beautiful...great course along the water, beautiful fall colors, and of course, great weather that cooperated by being mild. Course did have issues in terms of: spectators not being able to get to many areas, lots of re-looping, and tight fit for relay buses. I read, however, that the course was changed at the last minute due to restricted access to a military location it was supposed to go through. The spectators that were there were wonderful...just too few who could access it. Everything was very well organized. Great first time race that will hopefully stick around for a long time to come!

Nice race but needs improvement

This was my 3rd marathon (Phila & Vt. City the other 2) and I found it just as challenging but for different reasons. Except for 2 'light' hills at 23 and 24+ miles, this is a pretty flat course. The wind can be a problem since the majority of the course is right off the water. The looping is a bit bothersome but didn't detract from the race for the most part. The scenery is really lovely. Crowd support was sparse in the middle miles since it's rather difficult for family/friends to make it into the crucial parts of the course for cheering. Locals were mixed about their enthusiasm with many people backed up in cars along the route screaming for a halt to the race so they could drive along. One woman in a car almost took out a few of us running because she just didn't know there was a race going on. For the most part this was a great course with great organization. The food tent at the end needs some work - unripe bananas, yogurt, and water with assorted fruit drink was the extent of it. Also, plan for an earlier start time next year. I'll be there next year because it's a fast course and very pretty to run.

Liked it

Was my first and I was very pleased with the experience. I wanted something that wouldn't seem too overwhelming for my first experience. I did think there were too many twists and turns, but I am sympathetic to the fact that the orginal route through Camp Rowland was taken away and the organizers had to come up with more side streets to make up for it. I was surprised/unprepared for the hills at the end of the race (miles 21-25). Also this was in some of the more isolated areas of the race so there weren't many spectators to help with the most difficult part (for me anyway). As this was advertised as being close to Long Island Sound for much of the race, I was not surprised by the wind, and wore a long-sleeve top, and was reasonably comfortable. My family was able to come down route 161, park and thus see me twice on Main Street (miles 15 and 17). My suggestion for next year would be to consider parking offsite at some school or something and busing everyone in as there was a massive traffic jam getting into the park. I'm hooked now and look forward to doing it again.

This was my first marathon that I completed, I thought that the course was beautiful but, the surrounding neighborhoods were quiet and empty, some of the course should have been in areas were fans and family could easily get to 'support' runners, especially first-timers.

Nice course, well done

Course: The out-and-back could have been more interesting, but given the last minute changes it was scenic (right on the water, through downtown Niantic) and challenging (especially the twists and little hills). A downhill and flat last 2 miles was very welcome. Organization: Given the narrow paths and bottlenecks, it could have been a disaster, but wasn't. Only complaints were some confusion on Black Point, and the unnecessarily slow traffic flow into Rocky Neck three hours in. For a first time marathon it was exceptionally done. Spectators: Well supported given the isolation of some of the parts like Black Point. The bands were great. Except for the Rocky Neck bottleneck at the end, friends and family were able to see key parts of race.

Overall a good effort for first running

Not sure how you can give organization 5 stars. The race started 15 minutes late because runners were still entering the park. The race should start at 8am, not 9am. Need to either get rid of the marathon relay or organize it better. I had to run uphill from mile 7 - 8 behind 3 school buses that were transporting relay runners to the next stop. It was very tight in that spot running with the buses. Overall a good first effort. Finishers medal could be better. The course was very nice running along the water. I wish it could be more than out and back. Difficult for fans that travel with you to see you along the course because of traffic issues coming in and out of Rocky Neck Park before and during the race. However, very family friendly atmosphere inside park. The fans that were out there on course were very good. The volunteers that were at the water sites were excellent. I had plenty to drink throughout. Cops did a good job with traffic when needed. And the hills were not that bad, and actually were a welcomed sight. Where you go up, you have to come down. And these were very minor hills.

A wonderful first-time experience

My first marathon will be the first of many because of the mystic places marathon. A runner friendly course...and friendly runners. The weather was cool enough to avoid overheating yet warm enough for a singe layer. I loved the bands along the route...some good blues and folk mixed in. Some complaints by others about the hills but I didn't find them so bad. It would have been more adventurous though if the run didn't re-loop so much.

Terrific marathon, I'll definitely be back

This was a fantastic marathon. My only complaint, a minor one, is that the course was advertised as very flat - indeed, the course map says the 'highest elevation is on Haigh Ave. at 15 ft.' Several of the hills seemed 10 times that, and certainly were far higher than 15 feet. That said, none were intolerable, the organization of the race was impeccable and the spectators were there when they were needed. There were ample aid stations (both water and sports drink), the turny course was well-marked, and the fast runners seemed to have no problems blistering on the (mostly) flat course. The wind was a bear on the way home, but the course organizers couldn't have done much about that. Otherwise a perfect day on a terrific course. Thanks to everyone!!!!

wonderful marathon

If you are looking for a first-rate marathon, beautiful course, wonderful crowd support and overall good time, then look no further. The course is a little hillier than advertised, but it is so scenic that you don't really notice the inclines. From the time that you arrive at the registration area until you leave to go home, you are treated like a special person. I have run quite a few marathons, but this one goes to the top of my list. Kudos to John Bysiewicz and all of the volunteers.
