Small, but well organized race

It's a small race so if you are looking for a big crowd then this isn't for you. The course isn't anything remarkable either. However, the volunteers were incredible. The course is very well marked and the bike pacers were truly outstanding. They provides loads of communication and directions. Absolutely the best I have ever ran with! Packet pick-up was easy and efficient. The expo is even a little bigger than I would have expected based on the race size. Plenty of bathrooms and parking for the start/finish area. Considering the low cost, a nice little race for the price.

A hidden gem that Runners World should profile.

Course: this is not a super flat course like Chicago or Erie but there's nothing overwhelming. A few rolling hills (1% ers) on the out and back portion on Edward Hines Pkwy. We had a 15KM/h or 9Mph headwind on the way out which is west and southwest bound but got it at out backs on the way home. The road camber or slant isn't bad at all...just move around a bit to adjust. You'll get a mix of left and right camber so you'll be fine. Lots of aid stations and well stocked. I guess some call the course boring but I would argue that it was interesting until mile 10 and then out and back predictable from that point on so as to allow you to focus on running. The course actually takes you by Henry Ford's house... that's not boring! Nice shack BTW. Organization: top notch. Kudos to the race director who I think was the guy who personally thanked me for running their marathon as I crossed the finish. How classy is that! Lots of emails in the home stretch to make sure we were well informed and each email referenced the previous emails to allow you to catch up if you missed one. Premium parking for the early start marathoners which was sweet. No problem exiting either. Food: worth a quick mention because they had the usual bananas and bagels but they also had chips and chocolate chunk cookies. If they had a coke, I would have been in heaven! Spectators: like 40 people total over the 26 miles. No one yelled 'looking good' or the other usual lies we don't want to hear when we look and feel like sh!t. If you need crowd support (and that's totally cool if you do) you need to go to a bigger race. That said, you'll make 20 new best friends with the 10 that finish ahead and behind you. Noteworthy: the race announcer (Dave, I think) is a dead ringer for Forrest Gump and a super nice guy and full of energy. I'm getting a selfie with him next year. BTW, I send the poor Director about 5 emails with all sorts of silly questions and they all got answered promptly. Overall: a hidden gem that Runners World should profile.

Very boring course

Running Fit puts on a good race, but the Martian Marathon is a mindnumbingly boring course. At 10 miles you turn left on a road until a turnaround at 16+, then you race back down the same road for another 7+. In total half the marathon is on a single, boring road that is completely slanted. Even prior to 10 miles runners are just winding through suburban neighborhoods. Nothing to see. No landmarks.

98th Full Marathon! I will return...

This was my first race outside of Canada in 2008. I wanted to see how the region was in 2017 with the news of the new Ford plant being built and the fact that the first time I ran it GM and Chrysler were close to going bust. The marathon race course started at 7:15 and you could park right at the start. Plenty of parking right at the start and finish line for free! I stayed at the Red Roof Inn for $79 a night which is pretty cheap considering. Course was flat overall with the first 10 miles going through suburbs. The next 13 are on an out and back which features flush toilets. At least 6 GU stops along the way and good water stops. Fans are very good. Food was okay with Hummus and pretzel sticks. The marathon was small with less than 300 people registered. Well worth doing again for the price.

79th! Marathon! A tough time for all!

There were snow squalls so bad I could not see anything for nearly a mile, the weather was so cold my camelback froze and most of the water and Gatorade was frozen. The shirts were more 'Canadian' than Cormanesque so a bit of a let down. The medal was nice as was the free parking. Many of indoor flush toilet facilities were closed. I really like this race and have been doing since 2009. Many Maniacs on the course and many familiar faces from Ann Arbor last week. A tough course with the weather but I was able to run up the steep hills at 24 and 25 miles. Highly recommended. Also, check out Donutville USA. Tell them you are from Canada!

66th marathon! Must do for everyone!

This was the first US marathon I did and it really impressed me. I signed up for it because it guaranteed the ugliest race shirt in North America. Over the years it went to the coolest to this year where it was well - Canadian. The course really showed off all of Dearborn and flush toilets were nice. I still prefer toilet stalls with doors and washing my hand in clear not Gatorade orange water. The post race food was only pretzels and cookies. I really like the idea of free parking at the start and the numerous maniacs on the course. It is worth the drive from Ottawa. Check out the Motown museum as well. The coolest was the number of people who remembered me from the previous races. A good race!

My 53rd Marathon!

I originally did this race in 2009 because of their ugle race shirts. They are slowly getting back to the Cormanesque nature of the shirts I love. The host hotel was amazing. With free GU, protein bars, gatorade and fruit the day before and during race day. Free shuttles to the start of the race was nice too. The rates were cheap as well. The hills near the end kill you but the enthusiastic crowd at the end are nice. I will be back next year for sure!

Great Event

This was my first marathon, and I could not have asked for a better experience. The race was expertly organized - including timely email communications leading up to race day. Friendly police and volunteers along the course. There were plenty of well-stocked aid stations along the course with water and gatorade - and some stations with Gu Energy Gels. The course was relatively flat with a few hills. The beginning miles (approx. 1-8) were through residental neighborhoods, then the course returns to the main roads and mostly follows a single main road on an out and back course. The race t-shirt was nice, and the medal was a cool alien face. The marathon field size was approx. 360 runners. After the naratgib starts, several other races were held - in case you have a family member that might want to run, but not a full marathon: 5K, 10K, half marathon, and a kids race. Overall a great event.

Fantastic small marathonclearly organized by run

Although the course is a little dull, the slightly rolling terrain is much appreciated. The organizers made this as easy as possible for marathonersdedicated parking right next to the start/finish (and portajohns)and we started 1.5 hours before the half the starting line was much less congested. It was also a great boost to come across half-marathoners going roughly our same speed toward the end.

Small, positive suburb marathon!

Course is great! Running through the nice parts of Dearborn and Hines Park is wonderful. The hills are extremely fair. Heck, I set a P.R. on here by 7 minutes! Only knock on the event are the spectators. The way the course is designed, there are very few fans on the course. Besides that, I would definitely recommend this growing event!

A Damp Spring Race

This race - like many - was a metropolitan event. It took patience to get through the Detroit-area traffic to get to Dearborn, and then to the Expo. Still, the address was posted, so with help from GPS and a keen eye, it all worked out. Getting checked in was a bit of a challenge because you had to meander through the vendors to get to the lines for check-in. Then the marathon runners had to cross the lines for the shorter races. Once being where you needed to be, with your posted number, it was a breeze. Talking to an appropriate 'race staff' person at the expo took a bit of effort. The shirts handed out there were gray polyester with the alien head outlined in green, with text too. The host hotels were close-by. Also, the start line location was clearly defined in the summary of information, and parking was ample. And parking was available right adjacent to the starting line - for those who chose it. There had been quite a bit of rain the last week and Plan A of the certified course traversed an underpass that was literally under water. To their credit of the planners, there was a Plan B available, and it had to be implemented. This course actually went into several area residential neighborhoods. This required re-marking everything overnight, and it required a lot of volunteers, spread out over the course, to point out the twists and turns through the neighborhoods. Then it was a double-loop course, and that meant we got to see everybody twice. When there was an in and out, in a specific neighborhood, we saw the same person four times. The volunteers were awesome and cheerful. And they stayed for the duration (I was close to the end!). The way the course was laid out, we would go past the same aid stations multiple times for each loop. So we got to see those folks time and again too. Two or three stations did run out of Gatorade near the end, but others did not. To offset that, there was an abundance of GU/gel being handed out, so there was generally water and something for carbohydrate replacement. Porta-potties were not ample, but they were adequate, and they were strategically located so you passed them multiple times on the course. I never saw a line. For this race they trumpeted the chocolate milk theme. I was really looking forward to it. As is sometimes the case, near the end, they run out of finish line amenities. When I finished - with many runners still behind me - they were already out of chocolate milk. What a disappointment. On the plus side, water was still available. Also, there was an enormous amount of food for the runners: bagels, pretzels, Rice Crispy bars, bananas, cookies - literally, boxes of them. So, I doubt anybody left hungry. The weather did not cooperate for this race. As mentioned, it was a rainy week. Then, race-day temperatures were forecast to be mid 30s to mid 40s. It was a race for wearing long sleeves. There was some occasional rain on the course, and about 10:00 am it even snowed. The stretch along Michigan Ave. was incredibly windy for both loops, but it did not extend to other areas. Still, there were billowing, gray clouds for much of the race, and - for me anyway - as soon as I stopped running, I was very cold at the finish line; typical, I guess. The medal was nice, of the heavier type. It was a green alien head - looked like the ones that landed at Roswell in 1947! - with the year '2013' and 'Martian Marathon' in raised letters. Well done.

Organizers trumped bad weather & flooding!

Really hard to judge this marathon based on 2013 since the rain and flooding forced the race organizers to make a last-minute change in the route, but despite the adverse conditions (and a less than ideal course) the organizers did a GREAT job!! The Expo was larger and better than anticipated. The Host Hotel was GREAT ... early race day breakfast was so appreciated. The spectators were sparse, but the volunteers were awesome. The Martian Medal is my very favorite among many ... super cool and solid! Good job to all involved. Hoping next year's weather is better for you.

Best Small Marathon

This was not the smallest marathon that I have ever run, but it was definitely well run. The host hotel was close with breakfast starting at 4:30am and late check out. It was relatively flat. The finisher medal was the best of the 9 marathons that I have done. The spectators cheering us on was limited. Overall, a great race. Hats off to the volunteers and race director.

Low key but nice

I went to packet pickup and saw the 5-6 sheets of racers signed up for the 5k and the same thing for the 10k and half marathon then looked at the marathon and saw only 2 1/2 pages. I thought 'Oh, no. Another self supported marathon' Lucky for me I was so wrong. The volunteers were awesome esp since I'm a back of the pack runner and needed the support late into the day. There were times when volunteers were the only people I saw since there were only a handful of marathoners left on the course. Might I add that all volunteers were full of pep even though it was rainy and nasty for the majority of the race. Not sure about the food at the end since I only grabbed pretzels, bannana and chocolate milk (Yum!) The host hotel was AWESOME! They so cater to runners with early breakfast, late checkout, shuttle service to and from the race and snacks and drinks after the race at the front desk for all runners. Well organized and supported. Thank you to the Dearborn Police Dept for awesome traffic control. Oh, and I loved the huge blow up Martians at each mile marker.

Well organized, peculiar marathon...

In a town defined by Ford and where everything is about Ford, here's a marathon about what else?...Martians. I'm still trying to figure out any connection if any, but it's enough quirkiness to bring back a lot of repeat runners. Hundreds of inflatable martians everywhere. Not as many runners dressed up as you would expect though (maybe if they had costume awards it would raise the bar a little on the whole alien theme). The starting venue had plentiful parking & portapotties with covered pavilions where we debated how much rain we were going to get. Starting ahead of the 1/2'ers was very efficient except when running into the back end of their race in those last few miles. There was some congestion with walkers on the biketrail portion near the end, but in general; plenty of room on the closed course virtually from the start. Not much to say about the out-and-back. It rolls along a green-belt from Dearborn toward Livonia and back, nothing too spectacular. Aid/water stations were well stocked. My only organizational concern is that the park restroom facilities were closed up until mile 7 and there were no portapotties on the course; quite a few 'anxious' runners by that point. Lots of race specific apparel for a marathon this size and the alien head medal is definitely unique.

Very good event

Expo wasn't huge (which I like) but was festive and simple. Plenty of porta-johns at start. Really liked the full starting well before the other races. Course is a little monontous, but not too bad.One small complaint - pre race info said bathrooms every five miles. It was about mile 6.5 before the first one, and the ones that were available were about 30 yds off the course. Really appreciated the volunteers who stayed out in the rain and wind. Strongly recommend the Comfort Inn (host hotel). Staff was GREAT - use their shuttle service to get to the expo and to and from the race. They provided breakfast starting at 5 and had fruit and water available after the race. Tremendous customer service.

Do this Race!

This was my 35th marathon! I have done this course now three times and I will come back for no. 4. This is what I liked: 1. If coolness of race shirts is a draw look no further. This year's shirt was okay in a guy who plays hacky sack on the high school property on friday nights sort of way but I bought a great Cormanesque shirt at the expo for five dollars! 2. I liked the hotel. Cheap rates ($80) and free shuttle to the race. The race food was good with cookies, chips and pretzels. I miss the pizza from prior years. 3. The volunteers and the theme was fun. Some improvements include more frequent water stations, free bags at the expo and a return to gawdy t-shirts.

Great marathon that I recommend.

I ran the marathon so comments are based on that race. This race has many pros: - Out and back (I usually don't like out and backs, but Dearborn has a lot of parks and green space, so the course was great). - The expo and race are extremely well organized. Parking for packet pickup and the race itself was very convenient and free. - 'Real' bathrooms at the start/finish and throughout the course. - A lot of very helpful and friendly volunteers. (lots of water, gatorade and gu). - Interesting 'martian' theme. - The medal and shirt (they have women's sizing) are great. - The age awards are cool (martini glass). The only con is that there is a camber in the road almost the entire time, but not much the organizers can do about that.

Great, Low Key Race

I am a triathlon veteran and this was my first ever marathon; and I am glad that I chose this particular race for my debut. The Course... -is an out and back but is closed which is a *huge* plus. -is relatively flat, with some gradual hills, nothing too bad and good for a PB. -has water/gatorade/GU every 2 miles. -huge mile marker signs every mile. The expo was fairly ordinary. Race organization was above average although I wish they would've let me exchange my race shirt for a different size. I would definitely run this race again.

Don't be fooled by my stars; I enjoyed this race!

I did the full marathon, so my comments pertain to that. Pros: - great expo for its size - road was entirely closed to traffic - good on-site support re: water/Gatorade - easy for spectators to see you multiple times - peaceful course - running through the woods towards the end Cons: - out-and-back is always a bummer (but understandable considering the distance) - steep grade in road in early miles - long walk (after running 26.2) to food from finish line Overall, I really enjoyed the enthusiasm surrounding this race! Very small, but if you have spectators it will be easy for them to see you multiple times!

Another well done Martian

I have run the full a few times now and the race is always very well organized. The course is a simple out-and-back on a road closed to traffic. Not a lot of spectators but great volunteers. Most of the race was positive: I liked how the marathon started 90 minutes before the half. We had plenty of parking and bathrooms to use before the rest of the runners showed up. Mile markers are easy to spot with the inflatable martians on them. Lots of room to run since we were not mixed in with all the other races taking place later in the morning. I liked the shirts with the martian on them. Negatives: The medal was small and was almost identical to the 1/2M medal. Most of the marathons I have run have medals at least twice this size. Also, I was slower than usual, finishing in about 4 1/2 hours, and most of the food was gone by then.

Great race!

At first I was a little concerned when looking at the course since it's entirely out-and-back; however, I needn't have worried! The marathon started an hour and a half before any other races, so seeing the turnaround points for the half, 10K and 5K wasn't a problem since no one was actually breaking off at that point. The spectators were scarce, but those who came out were fabulous. The volunteers absolutely deserve some credit for this race - everyone was very encouraging and made sure to cheer for each runner. The mile markers were also themed - giant blow-up martians holding the mile marker (this is especially important for people like me, who are so into the race that they often miss the markers!). The weather this year was also amazing: 30+ degrees and sunny. The tees were a bit small (I would have ordered a size larger) but still fit ok. The only downside was that there were supposedly 4 GU stops - 2 stations on the out-and-back course - and I only found one since they weren't advertised on the course. I would definitely recommend this race!

Great organization

This was my 26th marathon. The race was very well organized, with plenty of water and GU on the course. Spectators were sparse but most of the course is closed to traffic. If you are going for all 50 states, this is the one for MI. Good job.

Poor organization...

This was my first 1/2 marathon. At first the race seemed pretty well organized, but they had some BIG oversights that made me mad. #1. The 1/2 marathon ended up being 13.4 miles instead of 13.1! I think this had to do with last-minute changes in the course, but that is just BAD! #2. GU and water were promised. GU was not provided and water wasn't as available as they claimed beforehand. #3. The results are still all messed up, with placements based on the start times, not the chip times. #4. There isn't anywhere to give them feedback. The "contact us" email isn't working. I had a great race and I'll go back next year. Hopefully they will have corrected these mess-ups.

A family (not marathoner) oriented race

I gave 5 stars to this event because it was really a great and unique kids marathon for my 4 year old daughter. Giving the same official marathon T-shirt and medal was really wonderful. She was really proud. By the way, the official hotel (Dearborn West Village) was really outstanding: breakfast at 4:30 am, free shuttle to the start line, late check-out (2 pm), and not expensive! They even gave to us free milk for our baby the night before. Dont hesitate and go there if you need a room next year. About the marathon, the out and back course was very boring (Im sorry to write this but there is not a lot to see during this half-marathon loop). This is not a marathon oriented race for sure, but I have a lot of fun and the organization was great (except the congestion at the arrival). Thanks to all volunteer and for the great kids and family oriented event!

Good, fun race to start season

My 27th marathon! It was great to see so many Marathon Maniacs on-course! Very friendly, well organized run. Could have used more porta-potties and the lack of doors on the bathrooms were a bit of a turnoff. Next to no spectators on the course, but the volunteers were great. Fun course; good expo. Great value. Will do again!

Loved the experience!

The Martian Marathon is a well-organized spring marathon with a quirky theme. The medals and shirts this year were really cool. The alien head medal was enough to keep me going late in the race. The course is closed to traffic and runs out and back with continual rolling hills. (The quads are definitely feeling it today!) Spectators are sparse, but when you meet back with the half-marathoners around mile 17 the support will help you finish strong. Pizza, bagels, bananas, and apples at the finish. Highly recommend if you don't mind a 35-degree (Fahrenheit) start!

Flat, fast and too long!

The course is flat and fast and a bit boring. Ran the half this year with a GPS, and it said that the half was 4/10 of a mile too long! (I cut every tangent too.) This was confirmed by others. If it was long, that's inexcusable!

Good Spring Race

This was my 4th half Martian. This is a great spring, early-season run. The course is just fine - weather was good. Parking is a little bit of a challenge though. I had signed up for the full marathon, but had been sick - and had no problem changing to the half. The shirt was way too small, though. My a medium fit my 13-year-old niece just fine. And the shirts have always been great.

Mentally Difficult Course

The organization was good, with excellent water stops, easy packet pick-up and nice medal and shirt. The course was a lot of the same - a long park road with little scenery, few spectators, and almost no elevation change. The course was either boring or mentally challenging, depending on your perspective, but at least there was no traffic with which to deal. Finish line food was good; just add soda next year. All in all, a pleasant but not very memorable race.

Boo!! What were they thinking??

I ran this marathon for Michigan as one of my 50 states. I read the reviews, and it was at a good time of year, so I looked forward to a fun themed race. I really didn't expect much at the expo, but what surprised me were two things. First, there was almost nothing you could buy with the martian logo on it. What a HUGE missed opportunity for the race to make some money. There were no cups, stickers, or shirts to be found. Second, what happened to the shirt?? The past few years were fantastic, with multiple colors, flying saucers, and martians. This year we got a plain white shirt with almost no flair. There was no warning about the large amount of construction coming into Novi, so if we had not tried to find the start the day before, we would have been late getting there - and apparently many were. The course was nice and the volunteers were helpful. It was cold at the start, but it warmed up to be perfect running weather. My biggest problem was the finish. I'm not a fast runner, as I finished in 4:08, but who on earth thought it was a good idea to run the kids' run at the same time and through the same finish line as the rest of the racers?? I see the finish line almost there and get that final shot of adrenaline to sprint through only to be overrun by 500 kids and their parents as they flooded onto the race course. I had to walk across the line so I didn't run anyone over. I think it was a great idea to get the kids involved in running, but it really took away from the accomplishment of the race. They even gave the kids the same finisher's medal that I got. I had to ask two different volunteers to make sure I got the right medal because I couldn't believe that they would give the same medal for both groups. There was no Mylar wrap, food, or direction after finishing the race. It was obvious that the focus was on the half runners and the kids, so if you're looking for a Michigan marathon, I would look elsewhere!!

Nice, Quiet Race

The course is quite nice, mostly following a slightly hilly road through a very long park (Hines Dr.). There was also a little paved bike path through the woods. Very little of the race is through populated areas, which I think is why there are not a lot of spectators cheering. Parking was worse this year than previously. I think it's because they've scheduled all of the races on the same day instead of the 5K and 10K on Saturday with the marathons on Sunday. Unfortunately, the parking situation (and my abnormally fast time) made my family arrive too late to see me finish.

Great Small Marathon

The course was flat with a couple of rollers (one small hill near the end). The Hines Drive out-and-back gave you a chance to see the leaders regardless of how far back you were. Water/Gatorade/GU were everywhere you need them. Starting with the halfers was not a bad as I expected. They set a good pace for me. The course was sparsely populated after the halfers turn around (until near the finish, where the merge with the 5/10K walkers created some congestion). The path through the woods and up to mile 25 had non-racers coming head-on. Perhaps a "race in progress" sign would be helpful. I got there an hour before the start and parked about 20 yards from the start/finish line. Sweet. This is a "self bag drop" because I dropped my jacket and hat in my car minutes before the race.

Decent small race; better organization needed

This was a decent small race; the start area was nice with plenty of bathrooms and space to wait. The claims of plenty of parking were deceiving because we arrived early and the main lot was closed. We barely found a spot on the street - not as easy as advertised. The race shirts were disappointing since they were not as wild as in years past; additionally, that they're gender-specific should be advertised. For out-of-towners, it was a bit difficult to find directions from the expo to the race start as no maps were available at the expo. Fans were few but were great and provided a nice boost on a LONG out-and-back course. Fans in the finish chute were excellent! One issue was a lack of Gatorade at the finish line - a warm bottle of water is not sufficient after running a marathon, and their Gatorade was not to be found.

Very nicely organized smaller race

I thought the race was very well organized. I was initially concerned about going out with the halfers, but truth be told, I was severely jammed up in traffic at the beginning, so I late started anyway. The course was at the perfect elevation, and food and beverages were handled well. The people were very nice, and I didn't have to worry about traffic where I have had to in some other smaller races. Going green with all the handouts was also very cool. Nice job, guys!!

Excellent marathon

I thought this year's Martian Marathon went really well. A cold start turned into a beautiful day to run. Most of the course is on Hines Drive, which is completely closed to traffic, and there are enough rolling hills to keep things interesting. The start went smoothly. Plenty of water, Gatorade, and GU stations. Better shirts this year- not as crazy as previous years. And the medals were also an improvement over last year. Only complaint I heard was from some who had trouble parking, but I got there an hour before race time and had no problem getting a spot. Overall, I had a very positive experience at this year's race.

BoBo and other volunteers were the best!!

I decided to do this race rather than one originally planned and nearby because of the 50-stater friends who would be there. I needed to see them! So happy I did. I didn't have any of the problems mentioned in last year's comments, so it seems the RD's read them and took care of those concerns. Volunteers, water, Gatorade and GU were plentiful. Those "hills" were nonexistent for me. My memorable experiences follow: At the turnaround I was offered the usual and banana. I requested an orange. The volunteer said he had a tangelo in his car and ran and got it for me. Since I was in a race and am naturally slow, I continued moving, so he had to run to get it to me. We laughed. Later, after I had passed mile 16, a yellow car pulled alongside and someone was speaking to me. During a race, I never look behind me as I told the speaker, so he came closer. It was the volunteer from the turnaround who was now off duty, bringing me another orange! What a pleasant surprise. I mentioned the need for caffeine as I was nearing mile 17 or so and he informed me he had a warm diet soda, which I turned down. I requested a regular Coke instead, saying I needed the sugar, caffeine and all of that other stuff. Guess what? Bobo the clown and his friends drove off and brought a cold Coke back to me, again pulling alongside quietly. That's when I noticed the writing on the car and who he was. BoBo was headed to do a party and wouldn't be at the finish when I arrived. That Coke lasted till mile 24! I was one of the last few finishers and other volunteers kept checking on me. As they were picking up the water tables, they informed me they'd leave some at each place - and they did. I had my Coke, but there were a couple others behind me who might need it. Near the finish, one volunteer who had checked on me earlier was there to ensure that I made the short transition alongside the highway safely. As I came through the finish line, a young man asked me about my Coke and was surprised to learn that it lasted till mile 24. I guess he was in BoBo's car. My friend Bettie was there along with others who were cheering me in and I was just a few minutes before the cutoff time. There was food, water and an age group award waiting for me also. OK. So what more do you want? Food, friends, good weather, great volunteers, well marked course and a peaceful race through the parks... (all right, so someone forgot to get most of the park bathrooms open, but there were woods nearby). That is what a great race is all about. Thanks to everyone. You made my day. So, perhaps next year and there'll be a 70+ age group award waiting for me at the finish line along with the "usual."

Well-organized, but lonely out-and-back

Ran my first Martian today and enjoyed it, despite not running so well. Pros: - very affordable registration fees - relatively flat course (there are some not-so-fun rollers) - easy packet pick-up at the expo - nice volunteers - nice race shirt and medal Cons: - the weather is a toss-up; it was pretty cold at the start; that's a spring marathon though - starting with the halfers is a drag for the first 6 miles, but I actually missed them afterward because it gets pretty lonely on the marathon course - the starting area was kind of chaotic; runners from the later races and spectators were just wandering in the street, so I spent the first half-mile or so wondering if I was on the course - aid stations were adequate, but a few qualms; 1. since the same cups were used for water and iso, the volunteers need to be clearer on who is handing out what or at least have it consistently in the same order; 2. with the out-and-back, aid stations are attending to both sides of the course, so one time and nearly a second, I was about to grab a drink when the volunteer turned to the other side and handed it off, so I missed the stop - super demoralizing; 3. it would be great if the GU could be distributed a little bit before the hydration stops - that way you can take the GU, wash it down and throw it all away. Overall, a really enjoyable event with a very enthusiastic group of volunteers and runners. I'll try to run the half next year.

Nice, small marathon

I loved the course, which was rolling with some flats. Fans, while far between, are GREAT! Traffic routing, with local construction, was HORRIBLE! I was more than 15 minutes late for the start when I planned for being more than 30 minutes early.

Great volunteers; nice, quiet run

My first small marathon was a pleasure. There was easy parking close to the start; an easy, open course; and no congestion. There were more hills than I expected, but besides the few short uphills at the end, they were not much of an issue. Aid stations were small, but volunteers were friendly and they had GU at many of them. (I picked one up at four different stations.) I heard a few complaints about the wood bridge near the end, but it didn't bother me at all. Marathon medals ran out before the 4:30 finishers got there, but I ran it for the shirt. BEST SHIRTS EVER!!! This race will become a yearly tradition for me.

Great Spring Marathon!!!!

Pros: Race day packet pick-up was available and hassle-free. The course was extremely well marked (impossible to get lost). Plenty of GU, water, Gatorade, etc. Nice mix of pancake flat sections along with a few small inclines and declines. Great weather!! Absolutely, the most unique awards I have ever seen. Free parking within feet of the start/finish area. No traffic whatsoever on the course. Cons: No bag drop. Finishers medal was sub-par (especially in comparison to the overall awards). A few of the aid stations after the turnaround were unable to handle runners from both directions. (I went past two water stops where I had to get my own from the table as the volunteers were all busy with runners headed in the other direction.) All in all, this is a great race. While the course has a few small hills, it is PR worthy. Excellent organization and strong volunteer support. This event will continue to grow in numbers.

Definitely worth your time

This was my second full marathon. No net elevation change (duh, it's out and back), but quite a few rollers. The steep hill at mile 25.5 was just WRONG!!! Nice, low-key race. A moderate headwind coming back, due to the openness and lack of trees or buildings to block the wind. Plenty of GU, and water stations were plentiful and well placed. They need to have the walkers start in the back... I swear the worst thing is to swerve past walkers in the first half-mile!! Fan support was almost non-existent. Headphones ARE a must to keep you focused, LOL. The price is RIGHT!!! At the end, the food was great, but I would have liked something like Gatorade instead of only water. I would recommend this race for all.

Fun theme and fast course that resulted in a PR.

I have run half marathons in the big events like Country Music in Nashville and the smaller ones like Foot Traffic in Portland. This was as much fun as any I have run. The course was as flat as advertised. The weather cooperated - sunny, cool and little wind. The martian theme was ever present and made it fun. Volunteers were great. Could have used a gear bag drop. I enjoyed being in town during the NCAA Final Four. That made getting a hotel room harder, but the excitement in the air more than offset that minor inconvenience. Loved the Henry Ford Musuem, Detroit Institute of Art, and side trip to Ann Arbor. Numerous awesome restaurants. Delightful trip to a city that was very happy to host visitors. I'm glad that I added this race to my list.

Well run marathon

I thought this was a well run, smaller marathon. The course was closed off to traffic and was well laid out. A few hills kept things interesting. Not many spectators, but that was expected. I liked the serenity after the 1/2 marathons turned off. Plenty of water/Gatorade/GU stops and several bathrooms along the route. Plenty of food at the finish line. I don't care for the shirts - they're a little too gimmicky for me - but I think most people liked them. My only real complaint is about the finisher medals, which are very small and boring. For the half-marathon, I think they were fine; but full-marathoners deserve a little more. But overall, I would recommend this race.

Not out of this world, but not bad neither

The inflatable martians that were taped to street posts were neat to see when driving in town Saturday evening. By Sunday morning, they were all gone. The hotel I stayed at was overpriced (at over $100 for the night). It was filthy, yet close to the race. As far as the race itself, there was ample free parking, check-in was easy and quick, and the T-shirts had a neat and unusual design on them. The entry fee was very reasonably priced. This is great, since the economy is so bad and unemployment in Michigan is the highest in the nation. The course was flat and closed to traffic. This race could easily handle many more people without bottle-necking occurring. The course lacked scenery and music; and spectators were few and far between. Every mile was labeled and had a martian attached to it. Water and GU stations were plentiful. However, longer water lines would have been nice, as there were only around a dozen people handing out water at each water station. The medal you got at the end of the race was of a flying saucer. Great idea! However, the medal is relatively small, looks dull, and overall is rather unappealing. Also, the date and location of the race are not on the medal. After the race, the food was OK. They had pizza, bagels, bananas, and cookies - that I can remember. There was no music, massages, post-race entertainment, beer tent, or anything like that after the race. I see from last year's suggestions that people wanted an earlier start time and they got it. The race started at 7 a.m. instead of 8:30 a.m. This was great, as I was able to get a late checkout from my hotel. With an 8:30 a.m. start time, a late checkout at the hotel wouldn't be feasible. I really can't say anything bad about this race, but at the same time, it was pretty much a no-thrills race.

Lived up to the "fun"

Every race starts with the organization, and this was well run. The course was great - too bad the race isn't in May/June. It would have been nice to see all of the parks/trees in full bloom. The course does not lend itself to have a lot of spectators, but that is fine with me. Even though there are stretches where you may not see a person, the ones who are out make enough noise. Also, even though it is so sparse, I didn't have that uncertainty/feeling that I do on other small race courses - that feeling that I'm going to miss a turn. Cones and people posted at every major turn make it so you can't get lost. Great race, a lot of fun, way cool/unique t-shirts, and a nice martini glass for age groups topped it off!!

Good, Small Race!

This was my 17th marathon and my first run outside of Canada. I highly recommend it. The volunteers were very friendly and the theme was fun. Cool shirt and easy, free parking. The last-minute switch from Novi to Dearborn was a bummer since my hotel fees almost tripled, but overall, well done. I like the food at the end and I will do this race again in the future.

Shame on the Race Organizers!

Don't bother running this race if you are a slow runner! They ran out of marathon medals before the 4:50 runners even came in. Even worse, the race officials started pulling up the aid stations at the 5-hour mark, even though the course was advertised to be open for 6 1/2 hours! It was extremely stressful to have to worry about whether you were going to be running the last 5-6 miles without any fluids or directional signage. This lack of consideration for the runners is just inexcusable. I will be sure to tell fellow marathoners to avoid this race. One more thing the race organizers don't mention: the short-sleeve marathon shirt has Team in Training logos on both arms. I have nothing against TnT, but if I'm not running on their behalf, I don't want their logos on my race shirt. The positive things: the volunteers were terrific and supportive; they stayed out on the course 'til the last runner was in, there was plenty of water, Gatorade and GU (that is before they pulled the aid stations) and there was still post-race food even past the 6-hour mark.

Nice Job

Okay, let's get the one big issue out of the way: do not go to the pasta party. That being said, this is a really good race to run to get Michigan done. The course was mostly flat, with only slight hills. It was basically a 13.1-mile out-and-back, but you go through local neighborhoods on your way out and through a park on your way back. The course is closed to traffic, which is a definite plus. You run mostly through parks, which if it was not so early in the season would have been nicer. The expo is minimal but sufficient. I did not expect much, and got no more and no less then I expected. Do not expect a big-race expo experience. You have local vendors. If you need something, bring it to the race because it will not be possible to buy it at the expo. The support is first-rate. Although the water stops were every two miles, considering the cool weather, that is was enough. If the weather was hot, then it could have been an issue. The water stops had water and Gatorade, and at two of them, they had GU too. It was enough and served the purpose. The race organizers where friendly and helpful. The volunteers where great. The support was perfect. I will admit to being worried before the race that with the growth from the last few years to this year they would be overwhelmed it did not prove true. They handled the growth fine and had enough support. The only issue was that the start line is not designed for the number of runners who showed up. Get a larger start line or cap the race. As I continue running around this country, I would put this right up there as a nice, small race that is well run and has everything you can look for. By the way the shirt is unique and really cool. Great design.

beautiful

It was a beautiful run. There were not too many spectators - maybe a couple of dozen around the course. The water stops were a little off, which was fine, and overall the course was hilly at times. But it was every nice and clean. They do a good job!

Overall, a decent, early spring race.

A well run race. Some issues were out of the race organizers' hands, like the potholes, bare trees and lack of spectators. I did not like walkers blocking the path within 1.2 miles of the finish. They definitely need to work on the finisher medals. The few small humps at the end kind of hurt the quads. The race shirt is cool but I will probably never wear it except on Halloween. Aid stations were properly spaced. The few port-a-johns did not affect me, but I could see it being an issue for the females. Good post-race food. I cannot comment on the expo because I never made it. I would probably run this race again but not until they address the cheap medals and the loud shirt I can never wear.

Excellent Local Marathon - and Growing

Very well organized. Volunteers were very helpful and encouraging. GU packs galore - almost at every water station. Plenty of bathrooms if needed. Course is very scenic in Hines park at the new location in Dearborn. I flew up from Texas to run this, and grew up in MI. Super PR course. It's a little hilly, but it had the rolling kind of hills, and no steep monsters. Post-race food was incredible: Pizza bagels, bananas, cookies, you name it... eat 'til you pop. Great, quirky awards and a unique theme. Martians littering the course and mile markers, and a roving Martian Patrol van - "The Martians are Coming." Fun, fun, fun. Got a PR, and I finished 5th in the 35-40 age range, so I got a cool martini glass emblazoned with the Martian Marathon logo.

Fun, fast, friendly

This was my first 1/2 and I didn't know what to expect, but the martians made my day. We had a great time on a course that was a little hilly; the hardest part was the long quarter-mile turns that were hard on the hips. The aid stations were perfectly located. Great finish. Overall, a great time. Oh, and we lucked out and got some of the best running weather; it was 40 degrees and sunny at 7 a.m.

I enjoyed it

Pros: registration easy, cool shirt, course through park without traffic, great volunteers at the aid stations, getting to use the park bathrooms (i.e., actual toilets!), fun theme, easy parking and getting to start line, great food at finish line, terrific weather. Cons: If you're gonna have a course through a park system, why have it on April 6th, when everything is gray, muddy and barren? If you wait another 3-4 weeks, it would have been green, with birds, flowers, better scenery. There were virtually zero spectators, and there was no entertainment along course. I didn't like ending in a parking lot, and I thought the medal could have been better. ...I must say that the last marathon I did was the NYC Marathon; that marathon's 38,000 runners and huge size made these pros seem better, and the cons seem worse (i.e., having easy parking and easy registration and easy leaving finish here sure beat taking two hours for packet pickup; a two-hour subway, ferry, and bus ride to the start line three hours early, and being corralled for an hour or more, and having to walk an extra mile to get out there. Because we had the tremendous scenery of all of NYC, the skyline, all five boroughs, thousands of rowdy, cheering race fans, and the diversity of the runners there made the lack of scenery on the course, the lack of fan support and small number of runners here seemed like an extra "con." One other thing: My buddy, John, ran the half and dressed in full alien makeup, which everyone seemed to love! He should have gotten some kind of enthusiasm prize! I couldn't believe he did it! Overall, I enjoyed the race, even though my time wasn't good because of a lack of sufficient training.

Nice, quiet, Sunday-morning run

Pros: reasonable entry fee, fun inflatable "martian" markings each mile, closed course/no traffic, plenty of yummy pizza and chocolate chip cookies at the end, A+ weather (except wind should have been reversed), plenty of aid, and we got a great deal on a pair of ASICS at the expo on Sat. Come to Dearborn next year! Run by the Henry Ford Estate, then stay for a trip to nearby historic Greenfield Village! Cons: nope!

Scenic course to run the tangents

Wonderful local race. Took my kids to the 1.2-mile run on Saturday and was surprised to find 500 kids racing. Loud and wild t-shirt goes perfectly with the theme. It's nice to have something different from the typical shirt. Sparse crowds have their advantages. It seems like most of the water stops had GU, and as you approached them, it was easy to tell the volunteer that you wanted a GU. Volunteers were very helpful. With so few runners (300 or so), you can't expect the crowds to be large. Probably most importantly, the small amount of runners combined with a closed course made it easy to run the tangents. My Garmin gave me a total of 26.27 miles, substantially down from the 26.7 I recorded at the relatively small Royal Victoria. My one criticism of the course is that loop in the parking lot at the end. It would seem like a relatively easy fix to extend the out-and-back 200 yards on Hines Drive.

Excellent organization makes it work

This was my first marathon NOT in a big city, and it was a great experience, even after a pulled hamstring ruined what could have been a personal best time. The organization and attitude from the volunteers were awesome. There was ample parking, no wait at registration, beverages and gels were well stocked at every station, and there was a lot of food (healthy and bad stuff) at the end. If you run these things enough, you have a collection of generic running shirts... but the Martian Marathon jersey is anything but generic. Very original and I like it, even if I'm not sure where I'd ever wear it. The course is pleasant and smooth. My only complaint is that the roads get very rough at points, particularly at the start and in the final couple miles. This isn't uncommon on Michigan roads, but they probably could have done something to avoid it, especially in the final stretch.

Great, local marathon, but not outta this world

Great gimmick for a run, with great T-shirt, and nice mile markers, but no on-course entertainment and a wimpy finisher's medal. I would really like to give higher marks for organization, but packet pickup on Sat. morning was an absolute disaster. Once I had my bib, the rest went really smoothly - lots of volunteers, lots of water stops, and lots of free Gu. It's a great setup to have a support crew, with major roads crossing overhead every mile. The race would be a lot more fun if the organizers could camp up the theme even more - give prizes for costumes or special volunteer troops en route. With no on-course entertainment, it gets a bit dull if you don't have an iPod. And post-race beer, please!

Nice local race

Weather could not have been better for the 2008 Martian Marathon. The aid stations were well stocked and volunteers cheered me on when they saw me coming. The course is a lonely one, perhaps not the right choice for someone who needs the moral support. The traffic-free route was great, but I made two wasted trips to restrooms that were closed, so a few more porta-johns are a must. Good job, Running Fit.

Loved it!!! Loved it!!! Loved it!!!

Great, small race. Not as many spectators as other races, but the ones that are there are very supportive and vocal. Because the race is small, the traffic and parking are easy! There are plenty of aid-stations with water, Gatorade, GU and energy drinks - plus the workers are fantastic. Plenty of pizza, cookies, bagels, and lots of other stuff at the end of the race. My stomach does not allow me to eat after a marathon, but if yours does, there is plenty to eat! :-) To sum it up: I'd run it again. Thank you to Running Fit. Ps. If you want to really have some fun, go to the expo on Saturday. Volunteer to work the 10K race and the kids' marathon. Make sure you watch the kids' marathon because the kids are a blast and they get you in the mood to run on Sunday!!!

Run it for the finisher's shirt

I run only major marathons (Boston, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, etc.), but the name, "Martian Marathon," sounded intriguing. So I registered for it. I was very impressed. Martian Marathon... what a great isea. The start and finish line were great. No traffic at the start. Nice quarter-mile straightaway to the finish. The course was very scenic. The entire course has gently rolling hills. Nothing steep. Just right to work different muscles, yet not work you hard. The weather was perfect for a marathon - about 44 degrees at the start and 50 at the finish. I ran in shorts and tank top, and I came from sunny California. Now, these were the best finisher's shirts of any I have received at a marathon. You just have to get one. I will definitely run it again next year.

Nice Sunday long run with medals, basically

In my quest for 50 states, this wasn't a bad way to check off Michigan. The weather was nice and cool, but sunny. As I was breezing along the lonely miles, it just occurred to me that it seemed like a nice long run (rather than a race). The water stops were adequate, the mile markings very visible, and it would have been hard to go off course. But my personal view is that it doesn't live up to its potential. There is a great theme here (Martian Marathon), and I loved the special long-sleeved "50 states" shirt they gave out ("I'm running a marathon in all 50 states and on a couple of planets"). But the race directors could learn something from the Flying Pig Marathon. When you've got a theme, use it! How about a finish line called a "final docking station"? Or themed water stops (one for each planet, and a few other celestial bodies)? Water stations with people in costumes, or with cone heads? I don't know... just play up the theme more, and the word would spread. That said, there are some more serious areas for improvement: 1. The packet pick up was a mess! It was basically a big room, where everyone formed a line out the door, but not everyone was waiting to pick up their bib or register. Some were just checking out the (limited) merchandise for sale. We finally heard someone say, just push ahead if you just want to pick up your race packet, which we did (but felt like we were being impolite). Then, once you got your bib and shirt, you had to fight your way back through the line out the same way you came in. There has got to be a better way! 2. I wish the race director would explain why the start is so late (8:30). The sun was up by 7:00 a.m. for sure, and an 8:30 a.m. start makes finishing and getting "cleaned up" a challenge to leave by the 1:00 p.m. late check out from the hotel. Maybe there's a reason for the 8:30 a.m. start, but you'll see from comments that an earlier start is what the runners want! 3. There were no "pace signs" at all that I saw at the race start. This would have helped with the initial congestion, since the half and full marathon start together. 4. More porta-potties on the course - especially the first 5 miles! Need I say more? 5. I would NOT recommend the Hyatt. The Hampton Inn looked like a better option. Either way, you still pretty much have to drive to the start, and the Hyatt just had many unpleasant features (overcharging for internet, overpriced restaurants, slow elevators, another convention going on, etc.). 6. As fortune would have it, I ended up winning an age group award! But due to the late start time, and the fact that the time of the awards ceremony would be "announced on race day," I have no idea what I won and if they're gong to mail it to me. I guess awards ceremonies work for those people who don't mind hanging around, but from those I have attended, many runners have to take off. Some clarity here on the options (mail, pick up) and times would help. Again, it was not a bad experience, but it has such potential that it was unfortunate to see all the areas for improvement needed and opportunities for some fun missed.

Not hard; had what I needed; boring course

I ran the full marathon on 4/6/2008. The expo was small but sufficient. I had everything I needed and the volunteers were very nice. There was plenty of food and water at the finish. This was my 18th marathon and I prefer smaller events without all the rigmarole. I like to drive up, park my car, go the starting line and run. I don't need a lot of music and crowds cheering on the course. For me, this marathon was perfectly fine. The course had some slight grades but no hard climbs, and I had a really good run. I do not recommend this marathon for people who feel they need a lot going on on the course to get through a marathon. If you need entertainment, noise and people cheering, this is not the marathon for you. I had a great time. My only disappointment was that the U of M bookstore wasn't open, so I couldn't buy some Wolverine souvenirs. ;-) My husband ran the half and the turnaround was not obvious; he missed it and ended up running 17 miles and is hurtin' today. The turnaround sign was small and at about hip height and right behind a water stop. If the water stop would've been placed farther away from the turnaround, runners (my husband was not the only one to miss it) wouldn't have missed it. He was pretty upset.

Great Spring Race

Perfect race to start your season. Race organization and volunteers were great. There were plenty of water stops along the way and enough post-race refreshments for even the "back of the pack" participants. My only complaint is the lack of port-a-johns on the course. The park restrooms that I checked along the way were locked and I can only remember seeing 2 sets of 2 port-a-johns during the entire half-marathon course.

A great run to start off the running year!

The Martian Marathon is the first of many runs I participate in throughout the year. The course is well marked, with plenty of water stations. The medal is very cool and the t-shirt is rather psychedelic. Also a very cool addition is that you can see multiple hawks during the run.

Nice Race but hard for a first timer

Nice race. Tech shirt that is as ugly as I have ever seen. The medals are very cheap compared to the marathons I have run since. As a first timer I didn't realize how much support matters. Most of the race I was on my own, (literally)with the rolling hills there was a lot of time where I could see no one in front or behind me. The loop of the parking lot in mile 25 was all but insulting, out and back in a parking lot just yards from the finish was brutal. All in all nice race, glad they moved the 10K to Saturday this year. I'll run the 10K and the half and wait three weeks to run the Trail Marathon. Running Fit does a really nice job again. This is a neat, quirky, home town race.

Another great year

I had reviewed the course for 2006, and am now doing so for 2007.... The 2007 start/course was revised to eliminate the full marathoners need to loop back on the course 3 miles from the end. While I wasn't thrilled running down the entrance ramp to ford road with all the pot holes, I can appreciate the need to move the course. This year's staging area and course were great. Thank you to UM Dearborn for allowing this to take place, and I truly hope that it starts there next year. I agree with earlier posters - an earlier start would be great. I love this marathon - it was my first half marathon, and it's so laidback that you can't help but enjoy it.

Great local marathon

This is a good, early-spring race. After putting up with all of the hassles and expenses of large races such as Chicago, this is a nice change of pace. The weather had ideal conditions. Mid-forties at the start and cloudy. The sun did not come out until around 11:30. The race was well organized from the start through the finish. There were plenty of toilets at the start and a place to stretch indoors if you wanted to. The course is a slightly hilly out-and-back in a peaceful park setting along the middle Rouge River. Just enough hills so as to not be too flat but not near as difficult as some of the other races out there. Water and electrolytes were well placed on the course. Wish there could have been more spectators out on the course but I'm sure that will change with time as the race grows. Many thanks to the students at the water stop. You guys were awesome! Your enthusiasm gave me a boost. All the volunteers did a great job! My only suggestions would be: To possibly designate some food at the finish for the marathoners in case there is a much larger crowd of half-marathon finishers. Perhaps consider moving the start time up to 8:00 or 7:30. Consider having some water or electrolytes at the start of the race. All in all, if you want to run a good qualifying race without having to spend a fortune for fees, hotels, etc., and without fighting crowds for the first 8 miles, I would definitely recommend this race!

Wow, that was fun!!

Easily the best of the small races i've done, I absolutely loved the wide street spaces of Hines Park, easily avoiding the dreaded 'Wolf Pack' clog of the popular mega-dues races. I've been in this area most of my life and had never even driven HP. Very serine & natural, a very pleasant trade for crowd support. The small up and down grades where not overly agressive at any time, however frequent. My only suggestion would be to consider leaving half the lanes open for traffic for friends, family and supporters throughout most of the course where possible. There was so much unused space 90% of the time and for some newbies that might be abit intimidating. Either way, i'll surely be back yearly as long as I can for this one!

What a fun name for a race!

Okay, I ran the race for the name...and I was not disappointed. Great little expo and a ton of licensed merchandise for a smaller event. The volunteer's jackets were worth taking the effort to volunteer. The race shirts were a super deal! A long line of great race shirts, and this year a specialty high tech, digitized color shirt. You can't believe how great the quality was on this. An easy course...no hills. Not flat, but no hills either. I saw the same six spectators six times...I brought no spectators with me, but somebody just behind me had a group. I told them my name and they cheered for me by name from then on. I have never seen so many porta potties at the start of a small race...no waiting. Easy race to find...expo was at the same place so you got to practice the day before. Easy parking as you were at a college. Very well done and fun event. Plenty of rest stops...they were fully adequate. Nothing special, nothing extra, but there was gu out there. Great traffic control. My only beef...it started at 8:30!!!! What is with that crap? Marathons should start in the morning and get it over before it heats up. Of course that meant that I got to drive to the race in daylight, but I had already been there the day before at packet pickup. I would have preferred an 0 Dark Early start. I mean at least start an hour earlier if not even earlier. If they had a better medal...be it enameled or a better shape I'd come back. As is, it was a decent race, but been there, done that. There was nothing special about the race but the name...and great volunteers, a great shirt, an easy route, and good support. But without a great medal it is a once and out for me. OH! I almost forgot to say...great hot pizza after the race! Very nice for a small race...or any race for that matter. I loved all the aliens all over the course...a super theme well implemented. Get me a super medal, keep the great shirt, charge me more money to cover that...maybe even a finisher's shirt! I'd be back. But certainly worth doing once if you run many marathons.

Not much of a crowd; good way to start the season

This was my first time running the Martian Half. Running Fit did a great job organizing the run - if you get a chance to volunteer, you'll meet some great people. The course was an easy out-and-back starting at U of M Dearborn, with lots of rolling hills. As usual, MI has tempermental weather in March/April, so plan ahead! At 7:30 in the morning it was pouring down rain, but by 8:00 a.m. it had stopped and it was just foggy and 50 degrees for the race at 8:30. Wish there was a bigger crowd of spectators, but it's hard for them to get down to the course when it's blocked off. Overall, a great way to start the race season.

Interesting first time...

This was my first road race, and suffice to say it was an interesting experience. I do concur with previous posters that parking was an issue. Living in the area, I arrived early to secure parking close to the staging area (per the map) but was told by people in the lot that I was not allowed to park there and had to move around the 1/4 mile down the road. When I asked why the site map stated I could park there, I got blank stares. After I finished the race, my friends and I went back to the gym area to find that all the nourishment/refreshments had been picked over and were out - aside from cases of bananas that were green. The only fluid we saw were the water bottles at the finish line, so we went back down to pick some up. Being familiar with the course from work out runs, I thought the inclines were a nice twist. The wintery/cold winds were brutal, but it's April in Michigan.... I had planned out 3 different layers of clothing to wear the night before, all dependent on how the day started out. All in all, I enjoyed the race and hope they utilize Hines again.

Boston Q

I am very happy that I chose the Martian for my attempt to qualify for the 2007 Boston Marathon. Great rolling course that was very fast. I love the course, except that you had to turn around at the 16 mile-mark. That was very tough mentally, as was the fact that it went back uphill into the wind again. There were friendly people and I was pleased with the organization; Running Fit has a great support staff, and the volunteers were wonderful. My only regret is that I will not run this race next year, due to the fact that I made made my time for Boston.

Good training run

I have run 21 marathons, from the "biggest and best" to the much smaller. I was just looking for a good warm-up for Boston and got a little bit more than I bargained for because of the wind, cool temps and slight inclines. Of course, organizers can't do much about the weather, but prospective entrants should maybe consider the unpredictability of MI weather that time of year. The wind was just brutal, right smack in your face for half the race, beating you down. I found race morning logistics to be kind of a problem for many reasons that are hard to state concisely - suffice it to say, for somebody like me, who drove in on race morning from some distance, it was kind of hard to get myself situated and ready to run, due mainly to the lack of nearby parking. I think the organizers should add some signage along the way to alert runners to upcoming turn-arounds - maybe I am just paranoid but I would say the signage in 2006 was barely adequate at best. Personally I did not care much for the course but I didn't mind it because I was just looking at it as a glorifed training run. If that is what you are looking for, I would recommend it, but if you are looking for screaming crowds and an interesting course and all that, I think you will be disappointed. Good post-race set-up and food - loved the pizza. I might run it again but only if the weather reports are better.

Well Organized

First time ever at this race. The course was rolling and followed a creek on an out-and-back. The wind was quite severe on the out portions. Made for a nice change when you turned around. Did not like the fact that you have to turn back out again from 16 to 20 miles. The road itself is quite sloped and it starts to wear on you after awhile. That said, the organization was amazing for a small race. They had a lot more people than they expected but handled it quite well. The pasta dinner was great. The aid stations were located where they needed to be and they had plenty of GU and refreshments available. The after-race food was great. As always, things get scarce towards the end of the finish as is expected. Had a good time running this race and would recommend it to those looking for a scenic, quiet race in the early season.

Not flat, the wind howled, and no food at the end.

The course, while much more rolling than flat, was solid. Great to have a closed course. The wind warning is accurate; mile 16-20 were a beating. I saw food sponsors on the website.... Where were the goods at the finish line?

Average Marathon/No Mizuno Mizuno Artic Touch Tech

I ran the Meteor 10K. This is an average race on an out-and-back course. Overall, I would rank it slightly above average, but the fact that they tried to pass off a cotton t-shirt instead of the Mizuno Artic Touch Tech running shirt ($25 value) that was supposed to be included in the entry fee drops them below the average rating. I was pre-registered and they said they were all out of the Mizuno shirts. Fortunately for me, my girlfriend was able to switch it for a Mizuno shirt while I ran the race. After the race we noticed they were selling the shirts for $10.00 (which they had plenty of). Unless I'm missing something, it appears they lied in order to sell the shirts for $10.00. It also said that age group winners would receive Martian/Mizuno pint glasses, but that never happened either. I was considering running the half or full marathon in the upcoming years, but it has left me with a bad taste.

Great race organized with a runner in mind!

I ran the 2006 Martian Marathon. This was my first time running in this race (my third marathon). This was by far the smallest but the best organized event I've seen yet. The staff was friendly and helpful and the atmosphere was FUN. The weather wasn't that great but the course was designed so the wind would hit your back on the last miles, and this was a life-saver. Great job Running Fit, I will definitely be back again!

Windy run, but enjoyable, well organized

I ran this marathon this morning, and had a good time! Some comments. The pasta dinner was a small congenial group, with nicely prepared salad, pasta, breads, beans, cookies and drinks. The race director spoke to the group about the race, and it was good to meet him - very friendly, had a sense of humor, gave us useful information, and explained that this year's registration (for three races: full and half marathon, and 10K) were more than double previous years. This created last-minute and unexpected demands on the organizers, which I thought did an amazing job under the circumstances. The whole course is on one road in a low-lying park setting, closed to traffic. The course turns back on itself several times, and thus we were able to see the fastest runners and friends more than once on the course. Very few spectators, but the volunteers at the aid stations were friendly and encouraging. It was a windy day, in the upper 40s, I believe. We were either running into the wind (brutal) or had the wind at our backs (lovely)! The volunteers looked chilly but did their work well. The aid seemed more than adequate, and they offered water and Ultima at all the stops, as well as GU several times. The organizers offered an early 7:30 start (the race was scheduled to start at 8:30), and I appreciated being able to get going earlier. I was able to get back to my hotel for a quick shower before heading back to Cincinnati. Starting early also meant that I was passed by all of the people who ran an hour or more faster than I did, and could cheer them on as they flew by. Nice job, good work; thanks for a friendly and fairly low-key event, good bargains at the smallish expo, friendly volunteers, party at Running Fit the night before, and all that I can't think of right now!

I'll be there next year.

I ran this a couple of weeks ago and really enjoyed it for a marathon in Michigan in March. The volunteers far exceeded the call of duty--I know they were out on the course mid-week before the marathon removing ice and obstacles for us runners--just tremendous volunteers. If you run, DO NOT MISS the superior pasta dinner--just a great touch, I've never had such a complete pasta dinner (two kinds of pasta) with chicken and veggies and desert before a marathon... and you'll need it. Just a pure celebration put on for a few hundred runners (very friendly runners, too). Martian Marathon, thank you.

Extremely well organized. A decent challenge

This was my first marathon thus far, so I have nothing to compare to. I liked the small size of the marathon, and the organization and the volunteer staff were excellent. I do wish there could have been more spectator support, and I didn't like the large chunk of time that was spent trekking through a subdivision. That was hard to take. That was also the only point in the race where the organization fell off a bit. It wasn't marked well, and it was hard to know if you were on track. I look forward to doing it next year, and I'll be doing my second marathon very soon.

"Go with the flow" outlook required!

It was great reading about the Martian Marathon on 'Marathonguide.com' prior to running it in 2005. I knew what to expect (e.g. rolling hills, unfavorable conditions, little to no fan support). To be totally honest, I had a great experience with this race (and a great race time). You just had to have a "go with the flow" outlook. By categories this marathon does not score high on the 'star' ratings. But at the same time it really does not matter. I traveled 300 miles (one way) to run the Martian Marathon and I would do it again. Maybe it was so much fun because it did not try to be a big race but rather a running store giving back to its running community by hosting a marathon. No stress. Just the love of running. Great job, Running Fit. Thanks for the Martian Marathon.

Course for full marathon greatly lacking.

In hindsight, I should have chosen another marathon for my second. While it was apparent that the organizers worked really hard to put on a good run, they fell short for the full marathon course. An extended portion of the run was an out-and-back along an expressway with no scenery and no spectators. Further, the loop into and out of a subdivision in the last four miles was anticlimactic and mentally tough when you're so close to the finish and heading back. The portion of the run that was in the park or with the half route was very enjoyable, however. My recommendation would be to only consider the half marathon for this course -- perhaps the race organizers should as well.

First time at martian. Ran 1/2 marathon. Course: rolling hills through a scenic park-like setting. Organization was great. Excellent traffic spotters. Enjoyed the expo the night before; race organizers took the time to explain the course. Nice to get a medal at the end even for running the 1/2. Few spectators on course; however, volunteers made up for the lack of fans with much encouragement.

Small and friendly

Tammi from running fit is SUPERB at communicating back on any question you have. This was my 2nd marathon and I was 1/2 trained. Still got the time I wanted. The course is exactly as explained. 'Rolling hills'... the entire run. Lots of busy x-roads that volunteers cleared as soon as approached. They were sweet. They sure give all they got for as limited they are with volunteers. Mud was a factor as well as careful footing. Nice marathon trainer or JUST GO FOR IT!

Fun, Challenging Course, Weather Wild Card

Third time at Martian, 2nd time for the Martian Marathon. This is a fun (Martian theme) fairly well organized (for being small with an open course) race. Weather is always a factor for a race this time of year. 2001 start was 18F and super windy, this year it was 50f+ with water & mud hazards from rain the night before. This forced people onto the road. Per the other post, this could significantly shorten the course. Pluses: Nice scenery/course, nice time (doesn't conflict with other spring runs) facilities MUCH, MUCH better than last year, fun theme. Minuses: Funky mile marker BS, mispelling on T-shirt, Gatorade mixed WAY too strong at some stations.

Challenging early season marathon

Overall this is a good and well run event. Course is challenging with rolling hills throughout. The vast majority of this course is run on a narrow bike path with some tricky footing at times. Would NOT recommend this course for the first-timer - spectator support is limited and course is tough. Only one complaint (and it is directed at the runners, not the race directors) - this is a certified course, IF YOU FOLLOW THE COURSE, runners who chose to run on the roads shortened the course and their times are not accurate... nothing to be proud of.

Great experience

After battling 37,000 runners at the 2003 Chicago Marathon, it was a pleasure to participate in a more relaxed, personal atmosphere that the Martian Marathon provided. I have nothing but good things to say. The course was enjoyable, the volunteers were great, the weather was fantastic, and the organization was outstanding. Spectators were sparse, but those that were present were supportive. If you're looking for a small, spring marathon that is a quality event, give this one a try.

Great race, however, not for the first-timer

This is a great race to run in order to fine tune your running program for a spring marathon. The course is mainly bike path and roads. The course gets very congested, so utilize the roads, even though race management tells you not to. The race had great volunteers with water and GU in many locations. Do this one as a training run (only seven dollars, includes a great shirt.) Hats off to the martians!!!!!!!

nice surprise

I entered this marathon at the last moment as I was one of the disappointed thousands from the cancelled Washington DC marathon the week before. It was my 6th marathon and by far the smallest field (185 marathoners). The race director was great with my email questions, thanks Tami. The surprise: a 4:17 PB! on a course that has those hills at the end. The only problem was at one of the major intersections the 2 volunteers couldn't hold back the traffic so we had to wait fot the light. But overall the organization and food were just what was required (there is a Tim Hortons coffee shop at the start/finish if you don't like the race's bagels, bananas or muffins). Try a small marathon like this one.

Blustery challenge

I've run this race twice now: 2002 and 2003. Both years were cold and windy, this year particularly raw, last year particularly windy. The course follows scenic Hines Park Drive for about 20 of the 26 miles (10 out and 10 back) and is run mostly on the sidewalk next to the drive. It has several short hilly sections, with some of the hills being quick, steep chutes up and down. This is especially challenging on the return trip when you're tired and it's likely to be going into the wind. This year some of the sidewalks were covered with water and you had to either run in the muddy grass or risk the traffic on Hines Drive. Not a PR course and not for the faint of heart, but a good challenge and definitely a character building race. Other than race marshalls and volunteers there were very few spectators. There were a couple of 'designated rooters' who seemed to follow the race in their cars, parking and cheering you on several different places along the way. But in general it was pretty lonely. Last year (2002) I walked a large part of the miles 19 - 24 and it felt almost deserted out there. I agree with most of the other comments regarding organization (generally above average) and post-race amenities (average to below average). Since I am a local (I live in Dexter, near Ann Arbor), I'll probably run this race annually, but I'll treat it as a long training run for other marathons. Next up this year (as last): Big Sur.

Nothing Special - Never received age group award.

This marathon is fine for a veteran marathoner who isn't looking for the thrill of a big city race. I ran it in 2002 and still haven't received my age group award.. perhaps I never will. The finish line area was just a small tent with some food - again nothing special. With how bad the weather was in 2002, there was no chance of people sticking around for an hour or more to wait for awards. If the organization is half as good as people here have indicated, maybe those age group awards will get mailed prior to the 2003 race.

Well-organized marathon

If you want a stress-free marathon, this one is for you. Registraton & packet pickup were all a breeze. Also, we stayed at a hotel just a mile down the road which meant we could stay warm, use the bathrooms, etc. just minutes before the start. The race is extremely well organized and the course is scenic (out-&-back course). For such a small marathon, they had an amazing selection of marathon merchandise. The t-shirts had a great design! I believe this marathon will grow a great deal in the future.

Martian Marathon viewpoints

General comments....I think I can categorize this race into two categories--good and bad. The area where the race is run is beautiful, you run along tree lined roads and bike paths. The scenery is beautiful. There was plenty of fluid along the route and the volunteers were very enthusiastic. Now for the rest of the race... Maybe I have been spoiled by running other larger marathons, but this race being in its second year still has a long way to go. The package pickup was just that, you got your shirt and chip. As for the chip, I don't understand what the need for the chip is, the only time you run past a carpet that registers the chip is at the end. I thought the idea of the chip was to register your time at different points of the course, so people wouldn't cheat, but I forgot marathon runners are all honest (Rosie Ruiz?). Also, if you run this race wear a watch, if you care about your time, because there are no clocks along the route. After you reach half-marathon and turn around, you are basically on your own. If this is your first marathon, I would not recommend it, the hills are very rolling and would only recommend it, if you have trained in the area. If I would have paid $50 for race day sign up, I would have really been mad. The post-race spread was lacking. Bagels cut into quarters, muffins cut into quarters, Gatorade that was hand-mixed that I drank and spit out because it tasted awful. When arriving for package pick-up and was told that there would be 1000 participants, and after looking at results between half and full marathon, there was not even 500 participants. If there would have been 1000 participants I guarantee they would have run out of food.

A fun but windy race in Suburban Detroit.

This was my third marathon in 3 months--I am attempting to run 12 marathons in 12 months. This was the smallest marathon that I have run to date (this was my 9th marathon), but I was pleasantly surprised. The race was well-organized thanks to Tami, the race director. The course was scenic, although hilly. Support stations were adequately manned and supplied. Not much crowd support, but that is understandable with a smaller marathon, and a cold, windy day. Like others, the strong, sustained winds in the latter half of the race were what bothered me the most. The course would have been beautiful in the Spring or Fall, but I know they ran it in March, because that is the month associated with Mars. All in all my experience with this race was very good. My family and I had a nice weekend visiting the Detroit/Windsor area. I would definitely recommend this race to runners in the Midwest who prefer the smaller, more intimate marathons rather than the large 'cattle call' marathons. Next stop in April: The Inaugural Lakeshore Marathon (in Chicago)

Best organized race director I have encountered.

I decided to run this marathon 4 days before start time. I had an 800+ mile drive and was nervous about pulling all of the pre-race stuff together. Fortunately, the race director was easy to contact, answered in a timely manner, and exceptionally helpful. We communicated numerous times via email prior to my departure and I was able to get through everything in quick fashion when I eventually arrived. The pre-race pasta meal was simply outstanding! It was in a very nice restaurant and I left the meal having made a number of new friends. The race course was a bit tricky at times due to hills and road crossings, but each crossing was well manned by volunteers and the scenery was nice. Not a lot of spectators, but the ones out there were very enthusiastic. This experience helped me decide that I much prefer the smaller races to the Godzillas like Disney and Chicago.

Better than the Free Press!

The other local marathon is the Free Press. It's flatter and bigger with more spectators and twice as many aid stations, but I think I prefer the Martian Marathon. Hines Drive is a much nicer route, with less traffic to deal with (I saw some runners nearly get nailed by a Subaru at the Freep Marathon last year). Organization was great, though I could have used a little more warning at the start (I didn't hear the announcements or the gun) The 'martian' theme is lots of fun, and I hope to do it again next year!

Fantastic & exciting for the 1st timer &old timer

This was my first half marathon and it was so exciting for me. I am a former LPGA golf tour player and to be involved in this marathon where the field is open to some of the best and to casual runners, it was just great. The course was a nice challenge. Some hills, both up and down, a great balance. SUPER volunteers!! It was so cold and windy and the volunteers were cheering us on and handing us gatorade, water and GU! They made me smile, which is always a nice relief! I can't say enough about this event. I met some very nice veteran runners and some who were training for the Ironman. This was a 'training run' for some runners for the Boston Marathon. It was great to be among such a variety of people and atheletes. I can't wait to run in another and work my way up to a full 26.2 marathon! Thanks to Running Fit for hosting this event.

Wonderfully organized, but a tough course in 2002

I just ran it yesterday. The race director Tami is outstanding! Organization was beyond reproach. The course was hilly, very well marked and away from traffic. There were crossing guards at the few intersections. 2002 was very tough due to 30° temps and gusting winds of 25 mph at your face from 13-22 miles. But I still PR'd. Overall a difficult but rewarding experience!

a great race!

This was a fabulous experience from start to finish. Beautifully organized, no gliches. A small, intimate marathon-great for this first-time marathoner. The folks at Running Fit put on a nice family-style pasta party the night before with world famous marathoner Doug Kurtis stopping by each table to chat with us and tell stories of his many marathons. Special gift to first-timers. Beautiful finishing medal! Almost all the spectators were Running Fit people & family of runners, as this marathon was not heavily promoted by local media. The organization was top notch-nothing seemed to be overlooked. The course was a smooth asphalt bike path all along a river northwest of Detroit. No big hills, just a few dips and bends along the way. Straight out and back. I hope they decide to do this again next year!

Well-organized, pleasant small marathon

I ran the first annual Martian Marathon yesterday. The course was very pleasant, with rolling hills, mostly on bike paths through a large park. The race was very well-organized, with aid stations every couple of miles. They never ran out of water, gatorade, bananas, or oranges, even for the 5:30 marathoners. There were only a few, but very enthusiastic, spectators, so don't count on that to get you through.
