Scenic, Well Organized, Warm This Year

The race organizers did everything so well, I wish they could have controlled the weather :) As a former marathon director, I look for excellence in organization, as this is the make or break characteristic of a race for me. My legs were not trashed from the gradual downhill in the first half (although I wasn't allowing myself to get carried away). However, it was VERY warm (upper 70s when I finished), sunny, and there's no shade. Scenery was magnificent as were volunteers. If you need spectators en masse, this is not the race for you. Got bus to start from hotel, good finish area by the zoo. Glad I chose this for my Idaho race!!! The southern Idaho area (including WY & UT) are well worth spending some time in.

Great race, great experience!

As a 50 states + DC runner, I am glad that I picked Pocatello as my Idaho race. The point to point with minimal turns makes for a great continuous race without the worry of slowing down for turns and potential fast times. The first 13-15 miles are mostly downhill. My quads were feeling it by mile 20 so be aware. My only frustration was the amount of 5k walkers that I had to weave around during the last 3 miles. All in all, a great race. I don't mind not having crowd support but if you are into having people cheer for you during the race, this is not for you. If you are into a beautiful course with easy logistics and need to cross Idaho off your list of 50, pick this one! You will not be disappointed. Be sure to go rafting at Hot Lave Springs as well. It's a blast!

Crossed Idaho off my 50 state list

The Pocatello Marathon is a small race with about 200 in the full marathon. The race director and volunteers did a great job of putting the event together. Getting through packet pickup was easy though it was in a cramped room at the Clarion Hotel. There were a couple of small vendor booths poolside. The race itself started with a short bus ride from the host hotel to a barn located at about 6200' feet. There were plenty of port-a-pots at the start line as well as a donkey and horse. The first half of the course was excellent and watching the sun rise was a big plus. There were several tough downhills in the first half that took a toll on the quads later in the race. The first half had plenty of mountain scenery and there were enough twists and turns to keep things plenty interesting. There was an uphill out and back at about mile 7 but the scenery was gorgeous so we did not notice the uphill as much. At about mile 14 we turned onto a highway with one lane coned off for the runners. The course continued on that highway for the next 10 or so miles without a single turn and very limited shade. We were completely exposed to the sun, industrial scenery, and fairly continuous traffic from mile 14 until mile 24. The second half in the sun was a struggle for me, especially a steep climb under the interstate to the service roads on the other side. The finish line was in a park, but we wound around a few industrial areas before running in the park for the last 0.2 of a mile. The finish area had lots of food, gear check pick-up, and massages you had to pay for. The race director and volunteers did an awesome job putting this together. They thought of everything. However, the second of the course was brutal to me and shows in my ratings.

*****Excellent course support!

Couldn't ask for a better executed race!!! Tough downhill course (point to point) but one of the best supported marathons I have run (this was state #38). Swag bag was awesome. After race recovery snacks, lunch, and beer were perfect. Stayed at host hotel and rode shuttle to and back from race. Thanks!

Fantastic Venue!

This was my #6 on my way to running a Marathon in all 50 States! It's a small event, but it is a gem! Super easy packet pick up. The pasta dinner was awesome, and the guest speaker was good. The Expo was small as you would expect for an event of this size! The course was majestic! The scenery was out of a postcard! The course is downhill for the first 13 miles! It beats up your legs. The rest is flat with three big hills on miles 17, 19, and 20-21! The last one is especially steep! At 4700 ft, you feel it, if you are not used to the altitude. It did have an adverse effect on me, and had to slow down after mile 16 to get my heart rate under control! The last two miles are downhill to a finish of friendly, cheering fans! 5 stars to the post race food and drinks! You can PR and BQ here, but you must train for the altitude!

Tough Day in Idaho

The Pocatello Marathon is a race that I have looked forward to running for quite some time. I have heard a ton of good things about the race and the town of Pocatello and all of the good things turned out to be true. Unfortunately, the few bad things I had heard also turned out to be true. This is a really small race, less than 200 in the full marathon. The race director and volunteers do an awesome job of putting the swag bags together, and the bag itself is really nice with a long sleeve shirt that was a good fit for me. Getting through packet pickup is a breeze and the pasta dinner was pretty good as well. They had a really interesting speaker at the pasta dinner as well which made it a fun evening the night before the race. The race itself started with a short, early morning bus ride from the host hotel to a small red barn located at about 6200' of elevation. There were plenty of potties at the start line as well as a very interested donkey, horse, and goat who came out to see us off. The first half of the course was fantastic and watching the sun rise at around mile 4 was amazing. There were several really severe downhills in the first half that would take a heavy toll on the quads later in the race. The first half had plenty of mountain scenery to see as we sped downhill, and there were enough twists and turns to keep things plenty interesting. At about mile 14, we turned out of the mountain scenery and onto a highway with one lane coned off for us to run on. The course continued on that highway for the next 10 miles without a single turn. We were completely exposed to the sun with 3 active lanes of fairly continuous traffic from mile 14 until mile 24. The scenery also changed from the beautiful mountain trees to blacktop highway, cars, and industrial areas. The combination of sun, vehicle exhaust, and boredom combined to make the 2nd half a long slog. This was a bad day for me, and I struggled severely through the 2nd half. However, the race itself is extremely well run and the people who run it do an excellent job. I really enjoyed my time in Pocatello and greatly appreciated the effort that is put into this event. I wish the 2nd half had been as interesting as the first, but I should have put more effort into preparing for this course and it would have made my experience much different.

Great organization and a beautiful course

I loved this marathon. The downhill wasn't too steep, and it made the first 14 miles fly by. I thought the final miles were lovely, too, with the mountains in the background. I highly recommend this race! Great swag, pasta dinner, and post-race food. Thanks for a truly great event!

Great organization on a challenging course

Love the people, the volunteers, the finish line celebrations and the Swag bag! and truly appreciate the pacers and in my case for how well and how serious Rachel took her responsibility for the 3:55 group - she wanted to make it look easy and she was masterful at doing so and so appreciative of her taking time with me after the race as I faded at 16 and yet she was complimentary and encouraging.... You will love the first 15 but be prepared for a long grind of the final 11 - just saying...

Fun, fast, efficient

A small marathon with big time organization. I ran this marathon hoping to run a good time. The course is conductive to that, but it is not all downhill. Be careful not to try to bank too much time on the down hill. From picking up my packet to the bus ride to the start to the bus ride back to the hotel every thing went smoothly. Nice that you use your backpack at a drop bag. I recommend this marathon to anyone who enjoys running. It wasn't a negative to me, but their aren't a lot of spectators until the finish.

Perfect race

This race was awesome all the way around. Great course, awesome race support from all the volunteers and great party afterward. Now if they could have asked Mother Nature not to supply such a strong headwind that would have been good.

To Run Again Or Not to Run?...That Is The Question

Last year I ran the St. George marathon and ran for a while with a fellow who highly praised and recommended the Pocatello marathon. The many positive comments on Marathonguide's website swayed me even more to give it a try. I loved it - well at least the first half of the course. The 6:15 am start was ideal and I appreciated getting off the bus ride to the light of the moon. The pacers I met were enthusiastic and very good. The first half felt effortless and was fast and beautiful. The second half was less inspiring and I had to dig deep to get through the strong headwind and lackluster industrial sights. The finish area and the volunteers were awesome. I have never run a marathon more than once but I am considering running Pocatello twice. In some ways it sort of felt like St. George's little brother. Recommend a post-run soak for sore muscles at the Lava Hot Springs 35 minutes from Pocatello. I would consider driving 12 hours from Canada again to run Pocatello's little gem of a marathon.

Well Organized, volunteers are the best!

Great, small marathon. From packet pick-up to post-race food, everything was top-notch. Don't confuse downhill with 'easy' though.

Impeccable Organization, Beautiful Course!

I am a 50-stater, and this was #28. Can't imagine a better choice for my Idaho marathon! Pros: 1) super convenient packet pickup (along with a very cool, pre-tagged backpack to be used as gear check bag on race day) 2) nice pasta dinner 3) great race shirt (long-sleeved and Day-Glo yellow for safety) 4) really nice medal 5) aid stations zero complaints, plentiful and well-stocked 6) the course - holy smokes - blazing fast downhill for the first half and tolerable flat second half, gorgeous mountain views throughout; elevation never a problem even though I am a flatlander 7) post-race food the best I've ever had! Steak, rice, gourmet popcorn in addition to all the standard fare, and plenty of it 8) early race start time (could be a con to some, I guess, but for those of us who like to get some of it done before the sun comes up, or have to make a same-day flight afterwards, totally a pro) Cons: none really. I guess if you need large crowds you wouldn't be happy here as spectators are very sparse, but this race has enough natural beauty for almost anyone. I got my second B.Q. out of 35 marathons here yesterday, and it was a surprise! This was the fastest I've run since 2010. Even the many miles of headwind on the second half didn't slow me down. Thank you, Pocatello Marathon, for a great race experience!

Outstanding small race.

This was my 32nd state and Pocatello didn't disappoint. The whole event was well run with many runner friendly perks. Loved the beautiful views as the sun rose and the course wandered down through curving hillsides that offered different scenery with every bend. Kudos to the RD who made the trip out to Idaho worthwhile. I definitely recommend this race.

Fast downhill thru first 14 miles

Nice small point to point race in scenic Idaho. Great organization, efficient bus rides to the start. Expo was minimal but the gear bag with the name tag attached for the UPS truck was a nice touch. Great volunteers and the spectators, while few, were awesome. Nice finishers medal. Well done finish line and finish 'party' with complimentary beer. :)

Well worth the trip!

This was my tenth marathon and I have found that these smaller events always seem to get more things right than wrong. I was very pleased with our overall experience in Pocatello and with the marathon. The organization and volunteers were great as well as the after race food and awards.

Nothing Short of Outstanding

This is the third year in a row that I have run this marathon. It was excellent the first time I ran it and has only improved from there. I gave spectators only 3 stars because of quantity, not quality. If I could have given the organization 5+ stars I would have done so. Pros: Very reasonable entry fee. I got in for $40 during the first few hours that registration was open. Excellent course. First half is downhill and is very scenic. Second half is relatively flat with one short hill around mile 21. If you are a smart runner you can run a great time. During the first half, bank the energy, don't bank the time. Best aid stations I have ever seen. Each aid station was well stocked and had lots of volunteers who were friendly and helpful. Of 15 aid stations, 12 offered either gel, fruit, hard candy or some combination of these. And aid stations were every mile starting at mile 18. You don't see that very often. Outstanding post race spread. I finished short of 5 1/2 hours and had the following to choose from: pulled pork sandwiches, baked potatoes with toppings, bagels, breads, chocolate milk, water and more. Very nice finishers medal, one of my favorites. The area has plenty to offer before and after the race. Go to visitpocatello.com. Also the Eastern Idaho State Fair, located in Blackfoot which is 1/2 hour north, is in full swing during race weekend. Cons: The prerace announcements at the start were given over a bullhorn - those of us lined up in the back could not hear those. I've e-mailed the race director about this and given my previous experience dealing with this race director, it will likely be fixed next year.

AWESOME marathon in every aspect!!!

First of all - every race is only as good as the Race Director. This one has the best ever!!! It is my fourth time to Poky. I grew up in Preston and Poky was never my choice of places to visit - it is now!!! I go there every Labor Day Weekend for this glorious marathon. I live in Salt Lake and have done over 120 marathons. I am taking over a dozen friends with me this year to enjoy this fabulous marathon - amazing, beautiful race course, best swag bag ever, beautiful race medal and ribbon, shirt - lunch is delicious - the whole experience is well worth the 40.00 we paid last year!!! It is a tradition and I love Pocatello for these reasons. It is now a favorite place of mine to visit. Thank you, Poky!!!

Great First Half, Dull Second

I really wanted to like Pocatello more than I did. Part of that was my fault for going out way too fast only to fade early. What I liked: 1. The first half of the course was so beautiful, starting up in the hills on a cool morning, just before sunrise. 2. Very well-organized bus ride from the race hotel- not too cool to wait outside. 3. Nice rural scenery, with changing views as the road wound down the mountain, from the start to about mile 12. 4. Decent post-race feast, though I was really too nauseous to enjoy a pulled pork sandwich. What I didn't like: 1. The altitude kicked my butt. Make no mistake: this race starts at 6000' above sea level, then drops quickly. I burned down those hills (instead of pacing properly- I know better, but couldn't resist the crowd. I paid for this folly.) 2. I hit mile 13.1 EXACTLY at the same place and time the half marathon started. So while the full marathon crowd had thinned, I found myself suddenly struggling through a throng of walkers. Not fun if your 13.1 time is between 1:45-1:50. 3. Mile 14 to the end are basically long, rolling hills on painfully straight rural roads parallel to I-15. I just hate running bleak straightaways into the horizon. The temperature really started to climb here too, and with no shade in the high desert, I slowed down a lot. All in all, not a great finish time for me, BUT I did enjoy the company of quite a few runners. Organization was well done and efficient, and the race hotel was great (and inexpensive). I wouldn't run this one again, but I traveled from DC to check off Idaho. And that said, I made a great vacation of it over a week with side trips to Yellowstone and Moab. I know others enjoyed the race more than I did, and I think if I'd paced myself better in the beginning (RESPECT THE DOWNHILL!) I wouldn't have slogged through the second half so much. If you do this one, practice your pacing on long downhill runs.

Great Well Organized Marathon

I hardly know where to start with the positives. Very modest entry fee. I got in early for about half what I normally pay for a marathon. Packet pickup is the best I have ever seen in 18 marathons. The packet pickup is in one part of the host hotel and the expo is in another part of the same hotel. And it is easy in-easy out. The bus ride was on a comfortable motor coach. The start line seemed well organized. And they had someone sing the national anthem which I loved. As an aside last year they did not have the national anthem. I e-mailed the race director and told him that with several hundred runners, someone out there would be happy to belt out The Star Spangled Bannerthis tells me that they take feedback seriously which is the sign of a truly great organization. The course is beautiful. Almost all downhill during the first half, mostly flat in the second half. There is only one hill in the second half of any consequence at about mile 21 as you approach Century High School. The aid stations were the best I have ever seen. They were all well-stocked and had plenty of volunteers at each station. I have run marathons with 5 times as many runners as Pocatello that did not have as many volunteers per aid station. Also the finish line was excellent. Lots of good food. A local restaurant had sandwiches and potatoes. I'm not much for solid food post-race but found lots of chocolate milk available to start my recovery. The medal is probably my favorite. There were some negatives, but they were really small. The PA system at the start was hard to hear. And a couple of aid stations had water that seemed colder than what I like when running. I e-mailed the race director about the negatives and based on past experience they are likely to be corrected next year. I gave 2 stars for fans, only because of quantity, not quality. Overall, this is my favorite marathon. I plan on being back next year.

Awesome Awesome race!!

Course was absolutely beautiful; the last half was not as great. Organization Top notch great! I love the duffle bag (not cheap) and 5 pound of potatoes. Spectators Not too much at first, more as one finished. I absolutely love this marathon I would highly recommend it to anyone who is looking to PR or BQ if raced well. I did not because I did not train to do so I was coming off my first streak of multiple marathoning: 3 marathons in 85 days and now a member of the marathon maniacs. For report go to runrunrace.com

Top notch no pun intended

A bus brings you 26.2 miles up a mountain. 5am & you run down. The air was clear, dry, & scented with sage brush. You run by teepees, sheep, ranches, the union pacific railroad, & rock formations. Lots of water stations, beautiful course, serious runners. You end up the zoo w lots of goodies. Also great swag! Well done!

An Excellent Rural Marathon

The organization for this event was stellar. There were lots of porta potties at the start, plenty of drinks and food on the course, miles were well marked, and the start and finish festivals were well done. The course meanders downhill for the first half and then is flat to rolling for the second half. There wasn't much of a crowd along the way, although we passed the runners preparing to start the half, 10K, and 5K, and they all cheered us on. The baby goats in the barn at the start were a treat. The views were pleasant and the race organizers were friendly and accomodating. I recommend it.

I loved this race!

Everything with this race went off without a hitch. It was a small race; nothing like the RnR events which I think is a good thing. It is clear that this race is about the runners. The expo was small but had the necessities. The pasta dinner and expo were located at the host hotel. It was nice to have everything right there. The duffel bags and potatoes make some unique swag! On race morning you board a bus that takes you out to a barn seemingly in the middle of nowhere. Plenty of porto-potties available and the family that owned the barn was there talking to the runners. You start as the sun comes up and run mostly downhill past scenic mountains and farm-land. I loved that everyone I met on the course was an experienced marathoner taking the event seriously. I am a fifty stater and it was a great place to have a reunion marathon. Keep up the great event Pocatello!

Great small, scenic race

This is a great small race. Expo is small but you can get the basics if you forget something. Loved the neon green duffle bag and 5 lb bag of potatoes you get. I use the duffle as my workout bag. Even the 5K runners got the duffle bag. Marathon race start didn't have much fanfareand started a few minutes late. First several miles downhill is quick. Race course is very scenic, especially the first half. Nice post race party and food at the end. Plenty of grassy area to stretch and relax. Again well done for such a small race. Enjoyed and highly recommend.

What a great race!

I first wanted to give my congratulations and continued support for the Pocatello marathon. It was amazing! I did it last year by the gentle persuasion of two friends and then signed up one more time to give it a another try. Loved it, loved it, loved it! We ran this morning with a group of other runners and I'm sure we have convinced them all to sign up and travel to your beautiful neck of the woods. Thank you for truly one of the best races I've done all year. Everything was perfect, from volunteers (seriously wonderful volunteers), to aid stations, the UPS guys, the overall organization and friendliness. The bags this year were a huge hit(love them), and the famous potatoes-absolutely made our Sunday Dinner this week fabulous. Great atmosphere all around! Thanks for an amazing race!

Loved this Marathon

The course was great and I loved the pitch black sky at the start with all of the stars. Loved the start near the barn too. Due to a bus problem (which was dealt with very professionally) some runners arrived late and were rushed through the pasture to get the race started as quickly as possible. This may have seemed odd to them, but I was lucky to get on one of the first buses and walked the road. The first half was fast and scenic, the second was open to spectators and not shaded but good. I would definitely recommend this race.

Great 'country' marathon!

Great marathon! The expo was small, but way more than I expected for a race this size. Excellent value for the money - $45 and we got a gender-specific long sleeve tech shirt, nice duffle bag, and a bag of potatoes! The race was decent, even though there were hardly any spectators. The ones that were there, plus all the fantastic volunteers at the plentiful water stops, were great though. My only complaint was at the end of the race - there were two final turns to get to the finish line, but they were not well marked and there were no volunteers to direct us (disappointing for a 'back of the pack' runner). Also, the pulled pork sandwiches had run out by the time we got to the finish, but there were still baked potatoes (yum!), ice cream bars, free beer, and massage therapists remaining. Great race!

Wonderful race

The organization of the race and post-race party was exceptional. Limited number of spectators but not an issue for me because of the beauty of the course. I was a little dissapointed with the pace group leader for the pace group I had planned to run with - the pacer told us her strategy and then proceeded to take off a full 45sec to 1min faster than the target pace. Ran into her at mile 7 at an in-and-out loop and she was not far behind other pace groups (faster). However, I paced myself and was able to finish in the time I wanted.

Excellent small race

This was my 30th so I have a little perspective, and overall PM was a fine marathon. OK, not perfect, but I have yet to run one that is. Some of the comments were incredibly picky, so assuming someone is reading this wondering whether to run it next year, here goes: PROS 1. Web site - great map/elevation/photos of course (to give you perspective on the beauty and the downhill first half)/etc. 2. Ease of registration. Piece of cake. Low low reg. fee. RD noticed my wife changed from 1/2 to 10K and emailed us to refund the other race fee, wow. And I couldn't figure out how to sign up for the pasta dinner, emailed the RD, and he immediately wrote back and said I could just mail him a check (that would get there after the race) and he'd put me on the list. It's that kind of race.) 3. Host hotel = expo + meeting of 50 staters + pasta dinner + bus departure only 1 hour before race? And only $81 total, and no fee for hotel computer and late checkout and quiet? Wow. 4. Easy bus trip to start - take that Boston and NYC. 5. Waiting under the stars - enough light to see unless your eyes were closed - and ok, the busses were 10 minutes late, bfd. No silly National Anthem, prayer to Jesus, cross dressing Celine Dions, speeches. 6. Excellent pacers 7. Great volunteers and plenty of aid stations - every 2 miles so you could plan ahead, unlike so many when they appear out of nowhere and you have to rip open a GU. Oh, lots of GU handed out on course, which few races do. And fruit at least 4 times. WTG! 8. Scenic first half coming down the mountain. 2nd half was a little boring, but it was mostly flat, with good roads, no traffic issues, miles were well marked, and about as good as you can get for 26.2 miles. 9. Finish area was wonderful. Lots of space, runners had own area, lots of food and beverages, including beer if you wanted it, $15 massages, music, immediate results, couldn't have been better. 10. My wife drove to start and walked the 10K so we had vehicle, with lots of free parking just across the street, and use of the city's aquatic center. Not sure about waiting for the busses, but so what? And the Red Lion easily gave me a late check out and I heard the nice front desk woman saying they were doing that for all runners. Most hotels don't. 11. The shirt being small? Then exchange it at the registration. Really, that's something to bitch about? 12. Size of race was perfect. I think about 420 finishers. Just enough to have a small crowd at the start and find a few folks to pace with. Halfers were not a problem - road plenty wide to go around them. And they started 13 miles in front of us. The other races weren't even noticed, unlike so many marathons when the start is a zoo. 12. Pocatello as a town wasn't an amazing destination, but Idaho was. After the race we drove to the Craters of the Moon area, which is unique, then Sun Valley, then to a guest ranch, then Boise, stopping at Redfish Lake to chill my legs and drive through some gorgeous mountains, and not many races offer you this kind of vacation over the Labor Day (or any other) weekend. Overall rating: 9 out of 10. A new favorite. So glad I chose this for my Idaho race. So bravo, Mike and your crew, well done!

Top Notch Marathon

This marathon fits me to a tee. The packet pickup was easy-in easy-out. Some marathons require you to go to about five different places to get all your things and in the process route you by every vendor. This was basically one stop pickup. There was a small expo for those interested. The volunteers were excellent in terms of number and helpfulness. Aid stations were well stocked with both supplies and people. How many times do you see a dozen or more people at an aid station in a marathon this size. The course was beautiful with the first half lots of downhill and the second half a few small hills. I paid $45 to get in as an early bird. How many marathon's can you run for $45? Pace groups were there all the way out to 5 hours. I only gave spectators 3 stars because of the low numbers. Some were at Century High School but other than that they were all at the finish line. Overall excellent experience. I plan on being back.

THE best small marathon around

This is an excellent race and only continues to improve. The race director takes feedback very seriously and every year it gets better and better. I've never been to a race with better SWAG. The duffle bag is not a cheapo. It's very nice, and I will use it often. The course is challenging but doable and very beautiful. My only con about the race was that there were several problems with the results, which made for a very long awards ceremony.

Great first marathon experience.

I've done the half marathon 2 years now in Pocatello and decided to step it up to the full. Challenging but great first marathon experience. Only snafu was with bussing in the morning since this years race had almost doubled in size. That issue was dealt with professionally and without much delay. Food and swag were great and everyone was super encouraging and friendly, great event.

Disappointing....

The goody back, shirt, and fiunisher's medal were very nice, and I got a kick out of getting a bag of potatoes! However, I expected much more of the race. Maybe after 80 marathons, I am getting 'picky', but there is no excuse for a race this size to start late. Sorry. The farm (and animals!) at the pre-dawn start were interesting. The first few miles wound downhill through forests, which was pretty. However, from about mile 9 on the scenery was all the same and very boring. There was no shade the entire second half, as the temperatures were rising. Fortunately (?) there was a strong headwind, so that helped cool, but many were suffering. The finish is 5+ miles from the host hotel, and the buses to take you back didn't start until 11am (the website and other papers showed mixed times, like 11:15 and 11:45 for the first bus, so that was also confusing). You basically had to wait around for the buses to take you back so you could clean up and check out (and the host hotel, Red Lion, was very reluctant to grant late checkout). They offered showers at the pool 'across the street', but you had to be in there by 10:45 and out by 11:00am (so even us middle-of-the-pack runners didn't have time to finish, get our drop bags, and use that shower facility, especially with the late start!). So, bottom line, I would not recommend this race, although times tended to be fast since it is mainly downhill.

Scenic, well organized & supported, I recommend.

This race is challenging with the downhill and then the long flat section. The community support of this event is incredible with aid stations every mile for the last 5 miles. The organization is superb as well as the timing. There was a hiccup with having enough buses before the race but just a hiccup is all. I really enjoyed the scenery. It was nice to not have the sun in my face during the run. I would definitely do this again, especially at the price, $45 early bird.

Fun times

This was my 2nd time running this marathon. We drove 12 hours to come to Pocatello. I love the marathon, the scenery, the organization, the swag, the medal, all are great. My only complaint is that each year I have gotten a shirt that I can't wear. The first year (2008), I didn't realize that the shirt sizes were gender specific, so the shirt was way too small. This year, I made sure to check and make sure the shirts weren't gender specific when I signed up. They weren't. Even my tag on the bag says 'unisex' on the size. However, when we got there, they were gender specific and I was told that the signup said it was gender specific. It did not, at least not when I signed up - I know I looked and checked after the last time. So, be aware that they do gender specific shirts even if the website and signup do not say so.

Thoroughly enjoyed myself!!

To begin with, packet PU was smooth as silk :D Nice little 'mini' expo too! The course was completely engaging for me because of both the awesome beauty and the downhill challenge. I really felt like I was on a wonderful ride!! Volunteers were outstanding by both their friendly, helpful nature and their competence in the jobs they were doing :) Everything was remarkably well organized. The duffel bags and long sleeve tech shirts were extra nice, loved the bag of potatoes since we were camping! The finish area was set up in such a way that it was easy for my husband, a non participant, to talk with me over the 'fence'. Yummy pulled pork!! Yay Michelob Ultra too! Really felt well taken care of throughout the entire event. The only improvement I would like to see is my finish time :))

A model for all marathons

I just returned home from the marathon, possibly the finest and most remarkably the best of 40 marthons I have ever ran. Staffers and volunteers at Pocatello ID left no room for improvement. Pros: a. Receiving bag of potatoes at expo b. Personal attention from race director at expo c. Excellent communication throughout from post-registration questions to the finish line. d. Great course markings e. Aid stations nearly every mile loaded with nutrition and hydration f. Highly trained staff / and all volunteers g. Reasonable host hotel rates h. Finish line MEAL !!!!!! whooey, I'm still full. i. Super finishers medal as well as tech shirt at the expo j. Post race showers k. Beautiful scenery l. Wholesome family environemnt j. Rumor that the race director ran the entire marathon a day previous to the race for the purpose of identifying any glitches on race day. Cons: a. None Thank you so much for a great tribute to the running sport throughout the U.S. I traveled 1504 miles each way for this race, and it was worth every mile. I recommend it to first-timers, 50 Staters, and anyone wanting to experience the best marathon staff team in the country. Thanks for all to all for a great experience. B.F. from Southern IL

Course, swag, organizers, GREAT! Start, DISMAL!

First, great things: Hotels, bus service, swag and show, aid stations, support staff, finish area with plenty of drink, especially chocolate milk, medal: nice and hefty. Pretty good: the tech shirt, though running small. I get an XL for wide shoulders but also a loose fit. My XL was actually small in the arms and tight at the wrist. I suggest keeping the long tech shirt but changing vendors. Dismal: And this huge to me, I was on the second bus arriving to the marathon start and it is PITCH BLACK, it should be ABSOLUTELY OBVIOUS where we are to go especially when you have a few turns to make walking there. At least have the start area well lit so I can at least focus on that spot. I am sure others would have simply followed those before them, but even up to the start it was VERY dark. I saw some assemblence of direction from some wheel chairs being unloaded. A group and I walked toward them and were pointed down a street when we realized we were walking down hill and clearly the wrong way&PAST the turn to the start which was dark and zero indication of turning. At the start area there were a few head lamps of those arranging the timing etc, and the rest of us fumbled in and around the porta-potties and I almost twisted an ankle in the borrow pit which was, pitch black. It did improve as people came, head lamps came, the UPS truck came, etc. This initial time is nerve racking enough before starting to be lost in the dark and wandering. I later discovered ten porta potties up the road no one knew about. So lesson from St George: big lights or enough to be obvious. If it offends neighbors, move the start. Lesson from Boston, a constant loud PA reminding of start time, bag check etc. I will be back but please work on this start. Likely will bring a 5-star rating on the other sites to probably a 3-star.

Amazing 1st half!

This marathon is worth the trip! Very easy logistics, small and intimate. The buses were late picking us up which left very little time at the staging area before the start and wasn't great if you had to use the facilities (though as I understand it, a bus or two didn't show up, which isn't the RD's fault). The first half was significant downhill. The scenery for the first 14 or so was amazing. No cars, just a few hundred marathoners. Very peaceful and enjoyable. The 2nd half was less enjoyable...we met up with the halfers, so it got more crowded, and we shared more major roads with cars for rolling hills. The medal was gorgeous, and the swag (potatoes!) was awesome. Volunteers and crew were very friendly. The first half of this marathon makes it worth doing!

Best Race Ever!!!!

This was a perfect 1st marathon race! I've run many half marathons, but this was my first full and it was fabulous! You begin at the top of a mountain and stand under a sky Full of stars. Watch the sun come up as you head down the first 13 miles which are a gentle effortless downhill through gorgeous country mountains that are lines with beautiful flowers, horses, sheep and the occassional farm with the family outside cheering. What more could you ask for. The last 13 are flat through streets alongside the mountains (this is the half marathon course). Everyone there was so friendly and it was a nice intimate race. It was very well organized, plenty of aid stations and lots of good food at the end. There was tons of great stuff as an extra bonus; the nicest race shirt I've ever gotten, a duffle bag, bag of potatoes : ), and a big impressive medal to top it off! I drove 14 hours to get there, and it was worth every bit of it! We stayed at the host hotel and it made it so easy and fun. My whole family enjoyed the event.

Beautiful, Serene, Well organized race

There are no spectators to speak of, but I hate that this will detract from the score here because the worst thing this race could do would be turn it into a full out party atmosphere. It just wouldn't fit the course. The course is beautiful and serene: especially the first half. The half marathoners definitely miss out. It seemed well organized, despite a snafu with the buses. I also got the strong impression by questions from race staff the race director is always willing to work on those things so I suspect that will be improved in the future. There are pace teams despite the race being relatively small, which is awesome. This is one of the better courses to BQ on as a last chance course if you are smart and don't try to bank tons of time... actually good weather, nice course, etc. It is a race I would recommend anyone to do but partly want to keep it my little beautiful, serene secret!

Wonderful marathon for the seasoned runner

This race has a lot to offer to a marathoner. Great course, excellent staff, weather was perfect. The race director & staff is truly commited to providing runners with all they need to have a great marathon experience. One unique item about the dark morning start was that it is located adjacent to a farm and I think we runners woke up the goats. They sure made a lot of noise and new friends. The negative comments I have relate to the fact that they put on too many races simutaneouly. This makes the award ceremony very long and tedious. Also, there are very, very few course spectators. Coming from the Boston area and the Boston Marathon, it seemed somewhat spooky. But, in Idaho that is probably small potatoes. Otherwise the food at the finish and the Idaho hospitality in general make this race a real winner!

Great to be a part of it all!

I am so glad to be a part of this and the other Pocatello races this year. I travel for one and a half hours to do it, but it's worth it. I have had some major health issues the past four years and this is my gift to myself. My only goal is to finish and not be last, and I actually placed this year in my age category! Woohoo! Thanks for the fun!

Pocatello, You've Done it Again!

I ran this marathon last year and had to come back. I had such a great time last year that I wasn't sure it could get much better, but it did! The organization for this race is great and the swag is the best - I LOVED the backpacks and tech-shirts, but the bag of potatoes always makes you feel like you're in Idaho! I have to say the marathon finisher medals were AWESOME!! I loved the colorful ribbon and larger size this year! The post-race food was the best I have ever seen at a race! Pulled pork sandwiches and baked potatoes = yummy!! Loved the course and the bib chip this year! WAY TO GO, POCATELLO!!

Enjoyable Race!

This was the first year that I participated in the marathon. The event was very well organized and I felt spoiled throughout the entire race with all the frequent, and much appreciated, aid stations! The scenery was very enjoyable during the first half of the marathon. I appreciated the runners' area at the finish line with free food available to participants. My only complaint is the number of non-runners I saw in this area taking advantage of the free handouts. I know that several other marathon participants weren't able to get some food due to the food either being gone or the lines being too long. The number of non-runners in this area was inflated by family members of the younger participants (fun runners) checking on their child who had just run one mile, and seeing the food thought it was available for everyone and their family. I suggest that next year the kids participating in anything under a 5K have a different runners' area at the finish line (possibly hand out a Popsicle) to avoid the congestion of family members in the runners area taking advantage of the free food available for actual participants. Thanks for a great event!!!

Great time in Pocatello

I did the half marathon and really enjoyed this race. The beautiful mountains, lush valleys, and cool temps with no humidity were terrific, and the course is fast and mostly downhill. Packet pick up was not crowded and backpacks were given to all participants with tech shirt and a sack of Idaho potatoes. Unlike most races, the marathon starts an hour before the half, and after the half start the 10K, 5K, etc. As this race grows, the finish will become extremely crowded, and even now there are no street closures so as you come into town on Highway 91 you have to be aware of traffic and slower runners/walkers ahead of you. The crowds are sparse until you get to the finish line, where delicious food awaits. Incredibly well organized/friendly race - highly recommended.

The Best Race I've Been In!!

This is the second time I have done the half marathon in Pocatello and it is such a great race. I have done a few other halfs and a full marathon and this is by far the most well run race I have been in. The course is great and the support is amazing! It's so fun for the whole family and it had by far the best "SWAG" of any race I've been in! I loved it!!

Excellent first-marathon experience!

A 5-star course - downhill for the first 13 miles, but challenging. Well organized event in all areas. Very helpful staff, volunteers. Only minor problem was that the post-race food line could have been made into two lines instead of one. Highly recommended! Great event for participants and family members.

Pocatello certainly knows how to treat runners right! Superbly organized, a tremendous number of friendly volunteers, a fast course, and the best post-race festivities around make this an outstanding event. Sign up early for 2011, because this one is a sell-out.

Incredible

Ths was my first marathon and it was well organized. THe course is beautiful. It goes through the mountains. I normally run with music, but when I saw the course, I decided to run unplugged. The weather was perfect. The fans were great - always encouraging all of the runners. The only suggestion I have is to make it so that people can track runners online to see where they are and what their pace is.

Enjoyable Race!

This was my first time running the Pocatello race. What a great day with beautiful weather, plenty of aid stations, and people to cheer you along (both runners and spectators). My only complaint would be the timing chip strap around the ankle. I participated in the half, and by mile 9, the strap was starting to cut into my ankle. I also noticed several other bloody ankles at the finish line due to the strap. My suggestion is to change the strap to a softer cloth or material.

GREAT FIRST TIME MARATHON!

This was my first full marathon and I had a very positive experience. I heard that they take care of their runners, and that was no lie; there was water, Motrin, gels, etc. whenever I needed it, really. The course was beautiful and it was a great "first" marathon! I can't wait until next year to run it again!!! Thanks to all of the people who put this race together!

Great hospitality and experience.

I thought the race was very well run. Thanks and congratulations both go to Mike and the team. The local support was very impressive. The course was a challenging one, with the downhill testing the joints and quads. One small issue was the last 5K, which involved dodging those walking the 5K race (grouped across the running lane). It may be worth considering having two lanes made, with a small one for the marathoners. Great race - thank you very much.

Liked this one

This race has all the elements that make for a great day. Early in the morning, the shuttle bus took us high in the canyon. We waited for the race start in a remote location under the stars and made small talk about past and future races that would bore most of our friends, but is exchanged with great interest among marathoners. At the starting gun, we started our descent down the canyon road in the darkness, lit by a full moon. Passing rural homes, streams, horses and occasionally, one another, we reached the half at a fast pace. Soon after, we were joined by the half marathoners and felt the surge of energy from the fresh runners. The course leveled out and we faced the new challenge of rising temperatures and city streets with moderate traffic. After a tough closing series of miles, we rounded a corner and saw the finish line in the park where we were greeted by friendly volunteers, good food, nice medals and finisher awards, and our friends and families. My congratulations to the race committee on reaching their goal of 1000 combined race entrants. You staged a great event and provided memories that I'll keep for a long time.

A wonderful race with a great race director

This event is one of the most organized and friendliest events you'll ever participate in. From the detailed website to the warmth of the race director and all of the volunteers, this event has it all. Although it has been mentioned several times already, the goodies are second to none, with an incredible duffel bag and a sack of real Idaho potatoes and hash-browns that is unlike anything you'll find elsewhere. I would also like to especially thank Mike, the race director, for his quick responses to my questions early on. That kind of care is rare to find and is one of the factors that helped me make up my mind to participate in this race. I am from Tennessee and traveled on 2 planes and on a 2.5-hour shuttle ride from SLC to get to this race, and it was worth every mile. If you choose this race as your Idaho event, you will not be sorry. The only suggestion I would make is to rent a car and stay at one of the newer hotels like the Hampton or Marriott. They are not far from the host hotel, and while staying at the Red Lion made everything very convenient and easy, the rooms were a bit worn and outdated. Otherwise, I wouldn't change a thing about the wonderful weekend in Pocatello! Well done, Mike - keep up the good work!

Yay, Pocatello!!

For such a small race, this one is AWESOME!! Six friends joined me on the trek from Salt Lake City to try this race out, and we LOVED it!!! It was very well organized. The host hotel was easy to find, packet pick up was convenient, race day transportation was on time and comfortable, the race started on time, the volunteers were very friendly, the course was beautiful, aid stations were plentiful, post-race food was great, and the swag was A+!! The duffel bag made bag check easy, the tech shirt is now one of my favorite shirts, medals were nice, and I am glad I did not have to leave Idaho without my bag of Idaho spuds!! Nice job, Pocatello!!!!

Pocatello marathon a hidden gem

Congrats to RD Mike Calley on once again putting on a superb race of the highest quality. Something for Everyone

If you are looking for a race event that is family-friendly, this race fits the bill. This event had not only a marathon, but also a half-marathon, 10K, 5K, 1.5-mile, and a kiddies' .2-mile race. The post-race event was worth staying for. Food included baked potatoes and yummy pulled pork sandwiches (free for racers and a small charge for friends and family), provided by Texas Roadhouse, and well as ice cream, chocolate milk, fruit, PowerAde, and yes, even water. Activities for families included two inflatable jump toys, and other games and entertainment for the children. The volunteers are plentiful and friendly, starting right from the packet pickup to the finish line. I ran the half marathon. The course runs through rural areas outside of Pocatello, an interesting change of scenery from urban events. There was a well-staffed massage tent staffed by ISU massage therapy students. I didn't have to wait in a line. The aquatic center opened their shower facilities to race participants! The word I would use to describe the schwag is "quality." Each runner got a heavy canvas duffel bag, a tech-fabric shirt in runner's choice of long or short sleeves, a finisher's medal, and a bag of Idaho potatoes. The awards this year were handsome, engraved wood plaques, given to the top three finishers in each age group.

Oh, What a Race

Sometimes you go to a small location without high expectations and you find a true gem. I have commented often when a race does not do it right or does not deserve the acclaim it gets. But when a race does do it right, it deserves to be noted and complimented, especially if it is a small race off of the beaten path. Pocatello was great. It deserves more recognition for the race, the location and the effort that is put into this race. From the moment you arrive at the host hotel till the minute you leave, everything you need is right there and everything goes off according to plan and without a hitch. The course is amazing, from the first half going down the gorge, to the finish by the water park. The organizers put their hearts into making this run right, and they have thought of everything and make sure it all runs smoothly. A nicer, more able group of people you could neither find nor ask for. This race must live on and continue to be run the way the organizers have it set up. Thank you for all of the time and effort you put into this race, keep up the good work, and I hope to see you again in the future. If you do not run Pocatello, you have missed an undiscovered gem. Also, the duffel bag was great. One suggestion: stay at the host hotel; it makes everything very easy.

Great race; awesome after-race meal!

This is a great race! I have qualified for Boston twice on this course! The after-race meal was a huge baked potato with the works, and a BBQ beef sandwich. Life doesn't get much better than that. Also there were only about 300 who ran the full marathon, so you actually get an award for your age group once in a while. Well organized, with great volunteers. Fabulous! Loved it.

I'll keep coming back for more!!

i decided to do my hometown half-marathon (my comments only pertain to the last half of the marathon course) to see how they pulled it off, and I was extremely impressed! I had been running in numerous races in the northwest, places that were known to have a solid running tradition, and this race is absolutely in the same league if not better than many I had done! Excellent aid stations, fairly nice course (except running along/crossing the road in the last miles) and a WONDERFULLY organized race, from packet pickup to refreshments. THANKS FOR REPRESENTING, POKY!!

Spud-tastic!

The race director put on a great event. The course was very nice for the first 15 miles - awesome! And after that - well, there's only so much you can do with the topography until you hit town. The start was surreal, and the canyon had these strange, wonderful little pockets of alternating cool and warm air. I was able to set a new PR, and qualify for Boston again, and between that and placing in my age group, I was very stoked indeed. Aid stations were great, and more frequent during the latter half, which was absolutely needed and fantastic. Don't expect tons of wacko screaming fans, or bands on every corner - it's not Chicago or NYC. I think the only cowbell I heard was on an actual cow. Finish at the park was cool, free showers a definitely bonus, and it was family-friendly due to the combo marathon/half, 10K, 5K, etc. Lots of kiddos there for the kiddo events. My biggest recommendation would be to make the volunteers play Jumpin' Jack Flash on their boom boxes at every aid station. I'd do this race again, and yes, the awesome race bag, the long-sleeve technical, and of course the bag of spuds were most welcome (fun to get past TSA on the carry on).

great course

Everything - from the pasta dinner, to the race shirt, the potatoes, the organization and the course - was great. The only complaint was the return bus. We waited for over an hour and a half before the bus left. There were several buses lined-up and only 18 of us in the first bus waiting and waiting to go. Since it was only a 10-minute ride back to the hotel, maybe next year at least one bus can leave early. Thanks for a great weekend experience in Idaho.

Great Marathon

I decided to run Pocatello for my Idaho marathon and am glad that I did. The course was great, the decline was not too much, and I could have had a faster time, but didn't want to burn out in the beginning. Volunteers were great and water and PowerAde were plentiful. The weather was perfect for the race. At the finish had 2 touchscreens to check your time/placement. And best of all, for those like me who were driving home that day... a baked potato bar for the runners. A great way to get some carbs, instead of eating one of my swag bag ones raw. One other note: after I registered I got in touch with RD Mike and he graciously changed my shirt size for me and I'm glad he did. The tech shirt was great and has already been worn proudly. This is a race I would certainly do again. Great job, Mike!

Best organized marathon I have ever run!

This was the best run marathon that I have participated in. They really spoiled the runners with pre-race items (informative emails, t-shirt, duffel bag, pasta dinner), race items (excellent aid stations with necessary items), post-race (food, awards, activities for families). The scenery was gorgeous and the people were all really nice. I would definitely recommend this race and would do it again. Thanks, and congrats for a job well done.

Thank you, Pocatello!

The Pocatello Marathon is charming, and small enough where you feel like you receive personal attention from the volunteers and race management. Be mindful of your pacing during the significantly downhill first half. The peaceful mountain surroundings make it easy to get carried away. The second half is mostly flat, with a few rolling hills that will feel challenging on tired legs. The course is not closed to vehicle traffic, but it didn't seem to be a problem. The volunteers were friendly and enthusiastic. The timing of events was also good, in that faster marathoners did not have to fight through crowds participating in the shorter races. If that isn't enough, everybody seems to love the duffel bag, and free sack of potatoes!

Great time in Pocatello!

Very well organized race from packet pick up to post race! RD does a terrific job with ALL the activities going on. Volunteers did an awesome job helping runners along the entire course. Although the beginning of course was downhill, the second half was a challenge, possibly due to the fact I had run a marathon in WY the week before. Congrats to Mike Calley and family for a job well done!

Poky has it all...

I picked this race as my 50th, and I'm glad I did. This race has it all: great race director, friendly volunteers, a downhill course that is manageable - and it's all delivered at a rock-bottom price. Excellent tech, long-sleeve shirt, duffel bag (with a 5-pound sack of spuds included), well-stocked and placed water stops (with Gu, fruit, and chilled water), clearly marked mile markers, and a great finish line area stocked with ice cream bars, a baked-potato bar, bread, cold drinks, and other goodies. Nicely done award trophies are given soon thereafter. Bus transport is easy and the race started promptly at 6:30. Mild temps through the first half with full sun (to your back) for the second half. Run it smart and you can put down a fast time; the course record was broken again this year and many repeat this for the well-deserved accolades it has received. Hotels in the area are inexpensive. Not a lot to do in Poky, but surrounding areas offer outdoor options close by. Thanks to all for a terrific race and weekend.

First race and very impressed

This was my first race experience (I ran the half) and everything was great. The course was great with plenty of aid stations. I was especially impressed with the number of friendly volunteers helping with everything from check-in to aid stations to the end celebration! The only detail I would have liked explained is how there are two mats that you cross before you are actually finished. Who knew? :)

The volunteers were terrific, everything flowed and was on time, and my kids had a blast with all of the family stuff at the finish. What a great day! This will become an anual event for my family.

A first-class run

Lots of aid stations; the volunteers are friendly and enthusiastic. I love this year's shirt for the women's finishers - it's a real running shirt with a women's cut! My husband and I have run the half marathon for the past few years. We liked that it started a mile back this year so we could run straight to the finish line rather than looping down 5th street and back up 2nd. Yaa hoo, that makes all the difference! The only downside: we've never liked that fact that the half starts so late. The 8:30 a.m. start means that by the time we get to the finish line, it's in the 90s and HOT.

I really enjoyed the race and was happy to BQ.

This course was almost exactly as advertised. The first half was very downhill and I was able to qualify for Boston in large part by running my fastest first half ever. The course was much more scenic the first half than the second. The support was great and the baked potatos at the finish were great. This was a good small race. I prepared by running long runs on a treadmill downhill and my quads never locked up. I would recommend this race. The altitude did not bug me very much, although I am from Houston, at sea level. The fans were great, but you should not expect very many (hardly any.)

You made me proud, Poky

I came back to my home town to run this marathon, and I wasn't disappointed. Everything is great, from the race director, to the course, to the volunteers, to the atmosphere at the finish. This will be on my schedule every year.

Awesome views for the first half of the race

Well organized event. Great post-race party. It was nice that the marathoners were able to receive their awards first. Thank goodness for the people who came to cheer for their runner and followed the runner on the course since that was about all of the crowd support we had. Looked forward to seeing them along the route. The race director is a top-notch guy and should be commended. Loved the race; may be back again. Glad the sun was at our backs.

Great Marathon; Even Better Value

This is a great marathon. The course is beautiful but challenging. You really have to manage your pace for the first 14 miles to save enough for the last 12.2. The organization is excellent and the volunteers were great; it is obvious that they take pride in running this event, from the top down. You can't beat the value of the long-sleeve technical shirt, gym bag, bag of potatoes and great post-run food for $45. The pre-race pasta dinner was good and also a good value. After the race is a time to celebrate. I think it's a good idea to encourage the runners (and their family) to stay for the awards ceremony (raffle and timing of bus schedule). It's a great party atmosphere and adds to the fun. I strongly recommend this marathon.

Good solo running; definitely cool schwag

This marathon is for the type of person who likes to run alone and doesn't need the constant cheering from fans. From miles 3-26, I saw and passed only two other runners. But I felt like royalty when I reached the aid stations because I was the only runner there! All the volunteers cheered and offered plenty of water and Gatorade, and sometimes fruit or Gu. And there were PLENTY of aid stations (maybe even too many?). The course is virtually all downhill. This is not as easy as you might think. But, if you train properly (i.e., make sure some of your long runs are downhill continuously), then you'll have a great run! Cool things: the awards were nice and I like the duffel bag and potato sack. The race shirt is a unique fit. The bread at the end was perfect nourishment. The free showers were soooo nice. (Can we get access to the pool for next time?) Also, we have FREE access to the race pics!! Indifferent: The pre-race dinner was unimpressive, and I thought the post-race potato bar was kind of gross (good idea though, and the servers were VERY friendly). Bad things: I got off course near the end. I followed traffic cones into a parking lot, but thankfully a helpful citizen directed me back to the course. All in all, it was a great time!

This was going to be my fourth and last marathon, but the beauty of the scenery, the professionalism of the organizers, and the friendliness of the participants convinced me to keep running; I am already preparing for next year's race in Poky. Thanks to the half-marathoners who cheered for us as we reached the 13th mile. :-) It was exactly what we needed - thanks guys!!!

Well-managed run, but be prepared for the declines

This is a very well-managed marathon, and there's definitely a sense that the community is behind it. The volunteers were absolutely wonderful. The pre-event dinner was great. The course is challenging because it is essentially continuously downhill for the first 12 miles, which led to me cramping up pretty badly. It was also warmer than I would have liked; it would be nice if this could be run a couple of weeks later in the season.

Running downhill took its toll

Pros: The downhill at the start was nice but forced me to go out faster than I should have (my bad). Nice view. Beautiful weather (a little warm at the end). Nice post-race setup. Excellent pre-race meal at a great price. Showers available after the race was very welcomed. An official Idaho spud post-race meal. Cons: If you didn't have someone to give you a ride back to the host hotel, or didn't want to walk the 6 miles back to the Ramada, you were forced to wait until the awards ceremony was over to get a ride back to the Ramada. I didn't plan on winning a medal and would have preferred to get an earlier start on my drive back home. Since there were only about 10 people on the bus back to the hotel, maybe let one bus leave at 11:30 and one after the awards ceremony.

GREAT JOB GUYS!!!!

I loved this marathon and only wish I could've been in better shape to withstand the beating my legs got through the first half. This flat-lander certainly needed a lot more downhill running practice. Everyone was so very nice. One of the crossing guards actually ran along with me for a bit when it appeared a car was not going to stop. I loved the entire experience! - Marv Winters, OK

What a BLAST!

This may have been the most fun I've ever had in a marathon. I ran past the 1/2 marathon starting line a few minutes before they started. They gave me such a big cheer that you would have thought I won the race. Thanks all you 1/2 marathoners. The photographers even put my picture in the newspaper. Thanks guys. The organizers did an excellent job from getting everyone to the start promptly to running a great post-race set-up. The volunteers must have more stamina than the runners. I saw many volunteers who stayed around for hours serving refreshments to the runners and then cleaned up afterwards for hours - that's dedication. They had baked potatoes with chili, cheese, onions, sour cream and more... and you could go through the line as much as you wanted. This race was better in every way than many more expensive marathons that I've done. I'll be back as often as I can.

Pocatello: five-star experience!!

Race Director Mike Calley (no relation) merits recognition as one of America's top ten marathon chiefs! Pocatello was a magnificent experience, starting with the $10 five-star pasta dinner & all the way to the post-race meal of an Idaho baked potato stuffed with hot chili. Traffic control was extraordinary: police were abundant and drivers were considerate. As we ran the first several miles downhill, the views of a glimmering sun peeking over the majestic mountains was just as motivating as hundreds of roadside cheering fans. Even saw a buffalo on the course! The temperature warmed from 40 at the start to low 70s at the finish, making the post-race celebration enjoyable. Yes, there weren't many fans, but the scenery more than compensated. GU was handed out three or four times and, most strategically, it came about 100 yards before the water/Powerade stations, giving runners a chance to wash it down. Volunteers, townspeople, and race officials could not have been more sincere and helpful. The long, gray technical shirt with yellow and black lettering was the nicest I've seen. But even better was the five-pound sack of potatoes that everyone received. The age bracket awards were impressive. One gentle suggestion: give the marathoners their awards first since many are from out of town and must arrange their travel. We also visited Fort Hall Indian reservation and met several of the Shoshone-Bannock tribes - descendants of Sacajawea, the Native American who led Lewis and Clark through these same mountain passes two hundred years ago. On our way back to fly out of Salt Lake City, we stopped at Antelope Island state park and saw several herds of buffalo, Pronghorn antelope, and a coyote, along with thousands of shorebirds. Give Pocatello five stars: you don't want to miss this one.

Nice race for a 50-stater

As has been reported from earlier years, the 13 downhill miles will play havoc with a flatlander's thighs. For me, seeing a moose on the side of a mountain during the first 10k made the ache worthwhile. The number of aid stations is more than adequate. They are very well-stocked and the volunteers are the friendliest and most enthusiastic of any marathon I have run. The finish line had the results posted promptly, there were plenty of refreshments, and everyone seemed to enjoy the baked potatoes. The awards were very nice. Pocatello is not a destination marathon, but if a runner is looking for a race in Idaho, Pocatello's 'Running the Gap' is highly recommended.

Nice well organized small marathon

Nice organization for a small marathon. Volunteers and water stops were wonderful. The only improvement needed is in the first 12 miles. Road turns need better markings. I was admiring the beautiful scenery, and continued on the main road instead of turning on a smaller road. Maybe the race director could have orange cones at those streets or a volunteer. I wasn't the only one who made the wrong turn. This was my 31st marathon, so it wasn't a rookie mistake.

A great run marathon

This was the 11th marathon I've run and though it definitely wasn't the largest, it ranks right at the top for support. Kudos to the race director and his staff. Try to prepare yourself for running downhill in your training for this one. If during your long runs you can simulate the first half downhill and the second half flat with a few inclines, you should be well prepared. The host hotel, the Ramda, did an excellent job. The $10 pasta feed the night before was outstanding. Support on the course was excellent with numerous aid stations and adequate porta potties on the course. The medals and t-shirts were adequate for a $35 entry fee. Very well run.

Great small marathon

The race starts about 6100 feet up in the mountains, and the weather was cool (mid-30's) and dry. Although it was dark at the start, there was no problem following the course down the steep downhill. After mile 12 it flattens out, with a few uphills, especially at miles 15 and 20. The combination of the early downhills, the late uphills, and the altitude made the second half tough for this oversized runner from the flatlands at sea level, but I knew that when I made my choice. By the time I finished (and I am very slow) it had warmed up to a still-pleasant 60 degrees. All the turns were well marked with large white arrows painted on the pavement. Although the roads were open to traffic, there were virtually no cars other than race officials for most of the race so no issue. As we got into town one lane was closed for us to use. The race director is very nice, and he narrated the bus tour of the course the afternoon before the race. There were plenty of well-equipped water stops and the volunteers cheered on the runners. Plenty of portable toilets along the course - at least one at every water stop. Finish line was in a small city park. The crowd was lively and the baked potatoes were great. At least half the women and a quarter of the men got age group awards. I talked to a couple of other runners the evening after the race, and they had forgotten to pick up their checked bags with their pre-race warmups. They called the race director and he brought them over to the hotel for them. Personal touches made this a great race! I read the comments from previous years and I think they addressed every one of the criticisms, including switching from green to white arrows for course markings, potatoes for everyone, overall winners excluded from the age group awards, etc. I recommend this race for anyone.

A must-do small marathon

This is a must-do small marathon. The course is beautiful. The first half is downhill and the second half if relatively flat. The water stops are at the right frequency and the volunteers are very enthusiastic. Results are posted quickly after you finish and the awards are super nice (even though I didn't get one). The only problem - fitting the 6 lb. sack of potatoes they give you at packet pickup into your suitcase :)

Best small marathon event I've done!

Although I only did the 10K due to an injury, my running friend did the marathon so we got a taste of both races. It was great to have a full marathon, a half marathon, a 10K and a 5K all with the same finish line so no one was really ever alone on the course. Staggered starts worked well for various distances. Transportation to/from start finish was very well done. With the small number of runners, each name was announced as they were coming in to cross the finish line. Where else can you get a free potato bar at the finish line with chili and all the fixin's? Terrific volunteers, frequent water stops along the route, PERFECT race day weather of cool and sunny! The Comfort Inn on Bench Road was a very nice place for a super low rate....transportation to the start was right across the street from the hotel. A MUST is to drive to Lava Hot Springs (about 30 minutes from Pocatello) to sit in the HOT (110 degrees!) natural springs to relax after the race. Thanks to a previous post on that suggestion. Living in a flat place like Iowa, the scenery was quite beautiful along the route. An easy 2 1/2 hour drive from Salt Lake City. A big thanks to the organizers of this years race! One more thing: they give trophies to the first 3 places in EVERY age group for EVERY race...very generous awards!

Very steep downhill. Train accordingly.

This was my first marathon. The course was very beautiful. However, the first several miles are a very steep downhill grade and my legs were suffering by the time it leveled out. I think it would have been fine had I done more downhill running during my training. The weather was perfect, and the race had a quaint, friendly feel to it.

Where's the beef? And the ride back to the hotel?

The volunteers/spectators along the course were the best. They made the event happen and did a GREAT job. (5 stars to them!!!). The course down the 'hill' was very scenic. I slowed down just so I could enjoy the view. I love running in the hills (especially DOWN). The first mile is extremely fast, but after that a good pace can easily be established. The trip into the city (from the bottom of the hill) was as bland as could be. To cap it off, there was a horrific head wind at mile 20 which made that incline almost unbearable. After you enter the city, things improve. Traffic control was great. (Only 4 stars because of the freight train area). I can only give the organizers 2 stars (it would have been 1 but I LOVE the result card they hand out at the finish). The buses left the hotel late. The bus that was supposed to take people from the park to the start never showed. One of the hotel buses had to pick them up. The race start was delayed due to the bus mix-up. The arrows on the ground marking the course were in a green color. Green is very difficult to see in the pre-dawn morning hours (yes the start was before the sun came up). They said, 'Food and beverages will be provided at the finish area', I thought that meant complimentary and something a little more nourishing than 'Gummy Bears'. I was VERY disappointed and HUNGRY since I didn't bring my wallet with me during the race and had no money at the finish to PAY for the decent food. The T-shirts and finisher's medal. I would have liked to see marathon (that is 26.2 Miles NOT 13.1 miles, 10K, or 5K) people get marathon shirts and medals... and the other events get their 'Event' shirt. I would have also liked to see the TOP 3 overall finishers be EXEMPTED from their respected age groups. Getting the overall first place award and the 1st in their age group award is a little silly. This would spread the awards around a little more to other people who also deserve recognition. More on BUSES... THANK YOU, the GREAT PEOPLE of POCATELLO, you saved us when the race officials failed to check on the promised transportation back to the motels. They say the last impression is what you will remember... this was a huge black mark on the race officials. The race officials told me afterwards that “transportation was provided”. Yes it was… but NOT by the race officials (it came via the spectators and family members of the local runners). This was only their 4th time… they are learning and this race will be a great one in the future.

Great Run

I just finished the 2003 Pacatello Marathon and had a great time. The course was downhill for almost 14 miles, but not so steep that you felt out of control. The only problem was trying to find your actual pace. I was afraid I would out-run my pace and suffer later, but seemed to get it under control (although I got left in the dust)! A higher altitude than I am used to (sea level) didn't seem to bother me as much as at the CO, WY, or SD marathonns I have done 'out West'. There were not a lot of spectators, but spectacular scenery was abundant. Volunteers were helpful and friendly. Worth the trip!

Beautiful Scenery, Fast and Challenging.

Awesome NEW course. Larry Bell and the entire marathon Ggoup did a wonderful job putting this together. Not alot of spectators, but the course was well equipped with aid stations, porta-potties, and great cheers from the various groups at the aid stations. Will do it again next year. Is new and growing (only in their 4th year). Keep up the great job.

I ran the gap

I had a great time. It seems that the organizers care about this event. I don’t want to seem overly critical, but here are my comments… Course: The first 11 miles or so were really pretty - by far the best part of the course. The grade was a gentle descent(other than that steep first mile). From roughly miles 14-20, there was a moderate headwind that slowed me down quite a bit. Not much to look at on this part of the course - unless you like freight trains. The volunteer smoking cigarettes at the mile 14 aid station caught my attention. Organization: The best part was the frequent aid stations with kind, enthusiastic volunteers. They were great. Good traffic control towards the end. Other than that, the buses left the hotel late, the race started late, and worst of all, NO BUSES SHOWED UP to take us back to the hotel (8 miles from finish) after the race. We had to scamper for rides. Fans: Scarce, but it’s a small race. Supportive.

Beautiful rolling hills course with great support.

The first Pocatello Marathon was run in 2000 - it was also my first marathon. IT band syndrome kept me away in 2001 but I'll be back in 2002. It's a point-to-point course with minimal traffic, beautiful scenery and pleasant rolling hills. The aid stations were every 2 miles like clockwork and were manned by wonderfully friendly people. Lots of locals were still cheering me across the finish line despite how long it took me. The finisher's medal was really nice and they had almost as many trophies as runners. I hope the race grows in popularity so there's a little more company from other runners and spectators in the future. Tip: head for Lava Hot Springs (30 miles from Pocatello) for a post-race soak in developed hot pools (it includes whirlpools and Grecian-style pool).

Kudo's to the Race Director for an Excellent job

From the start to the finish this was generally an excellent marathon for me. A great goody bag (potatoes, power bars, cereal samples, hygeine samples, etc). A great Pasta Party...pasta, salad, iced tea, cookies ($5). The course is moderately rolling and is very appropriately called run the gap. The course passes through a very scenic canyon. (sidenote: It's an A to B course, participants are bussed 26.2 miles to the start. In fact, they are generally bussed from their host hotel(s) to the start.) As to climate, fortunately for all concerned this year, just as it began heating up, we were blessed with a pleasant, cooling tail wind (which also did wonders for my time splits between 18 and 23 miles.) It's a lonely course where spectators are concerned, so one has to be a self-motivator. There were pleanty of first time finishers in this year's race, however, so dont be discouraged. This year's first-timers were inspired by the encouragement of their fellow runners. There was plenty to go around. There was live music at the end, gummy bears, bagels, gatorade, and an announcer calling out names as we crossed the finish line. In general, the local community was involved. The only minor improvements I would suggest: (1) power bars or gu (energy replacement supplements) at 20 miles and beyond (I didn't see any). (There was water and gatorade every 2 miles up to 20 miles and each mile thereafter.) (2) A more efficient system of bussing people back to the hotel after the finish of the marathon. (I was stranded at the finsh line and almost had to extend a night at my hotel.....the start line and hotels are not central, yet there is no parking allowed at the start (!)

A lot of fun--definitely recommend this race!

I did the half marathon distance, and really enjoyed it. The start of the half marathon is rather strange, on a lonely street next to a railroad track, but the rest of the course is super: relatively flat, farms, and friendly spectators. The aid stations are AWESOME, they are every 2 miles with food, water, and sport drink, and volunteers who actually cared that you got what you needed. Idaho weather can change in the blink of an eye, but I would hope that in the future the start time of the half marathon can be pushed back to 8:00--9 is rather late in the heat. It was really great to have my name announced at the end, even though I finished mid-pack! Don't know how long that will last, as this race is sure to get more popular in the future...use Pocatello as a springboard for a trip to Grand Teton/Yellowstone and you won't regret entering this race. p.s. The goody bags were fantastic--chock full of Idaho potatoes and plenty of freebies.

This is a great little race

The Pocatello Marathon is a nice little race. It's a point-to-point with a downhill start, and lovely vistas of winding streams, farmlands, and low rolling hills. 2000 was the first year for the Marathon, and the on-course support was terrific. Water, Gatorade, Powerbars, Gels, Bananas and Oranges! Also, excellent Age Group prizes, and trophies in the shape of the Great State of Idaho. The post-race party had 2-bands + everyone got a 10lb. bag of spuds in their 'goodie bag.'
