Worth a visit
You should run this race. Course is mostly flat (some hills that were a lot for me in SWFL, but if you train north of I4, you're fine). The road is a bit uneven and gave my feet some discomfort. Organization is 100%. Super easy expo, start of race, course support, and finish. Great medal swag.

Great race, awful aid stations
26.2 miles in the upper 70s and all that was provided was water and Gatorade. The race organizers should know better than this. Won't be back.

Great mostly flat course. Space theme - Good Kick
Pros and cons of the race....
Pros....
- Mostly flat course. Chicago knows flat courses and this is pretty much flat from start to finish. The northern part of the marathon (which was also the north half marathon of the race) had more hills then the south half marathon (which was also the south half marathon).
- I have never been to a marathon with so much porto potties. You might as well call it port-o-potty village!
- Lots of Gatorade and water available on the course.
- Somewhat an economical race.
Negatives
- I think that they should put the water nearer to the finish line then it was. First thing I wanted was water after giving it all I had. It was sort of distant.
- The south part of the marathon didn't have as much water and Gatorade as much as the North part. The south part is the second half of the marathon so I think its crucial.

This race is awesome!!!
I have run Space Coast Marathon 5x. My first marathon was Space Coast. I am now in the 5 year series. This is extremely special because I run it as a memorial for my friend who is like a second dad that was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2012 and passed in 2014. The first year I ran, which was my first ever, full marathon my friend absolutely loved the finishers medals. I will run for my friend Cliff and his wife, and provide them with the finishers medals as long as I as I able to, for the rest of my life if possible. God Speed my friend, until we meet again! Harsh Policies Take Away From Fun
Can you drop down to the half from the full? NO
Can you transfer a bib? NO
Can you get a refund? NO
Can you pick up a packet for someone else? NO
What if you have their ID and a signed document? NO
What if you can facetime them giving you permission on the spot? NO
Can you pick up your packet race day? NO
The course was nice, very flat and fast, and so was the weather, but trying to get packets for my out-of-town group was frustrating and stressful. Aid stations were so-so: one didn't have water, only M & Ms in water cups, with the next water stop some distance away. Most stations had only water or Gatorade, no snacks. There were goos of some sort available at some stops, but all seemed to be strawberry-banana flavor, an odd choice. Some of the slower half-marathoners stubbornly ran in wide clumps or insisted on occupying the exact center of the road, and wouldn't yield as needed, playing chicken with oncoming marathoners.
Many onlookers and aid station workers wore space-themed costumes, which was cute.

Great marathon course and well organized
This was my 33rd marathon (including 14 Boston Marathons) and found it to be everything my running crazies have told me it would be. Heard comments about crowned roads but didn't notice that. Heard concerns about 1/2 marathoners taking up the road. Didn't have any issues there just gave them high fives and encouragement. This is a good BQ too because its good for two years. Only one small ding is the packet pickup hotel center is very tight but this is Cocoa Beach folks. Not NYC! And running along the Indian River is really very cool. And you'll love the beach so get a hotel and bring the family. I could see me doing this one again.

A former favorite but ...
Except for some packet pick-up policies this marathon remains among my favorites. The course is great, the aid stations are fun and plentiful, the shirts, medals, towels, post-race food, cumulative year awards, and volunteers are all excellent. Requiring each runner to pick up their own packet and the elimination of race day pick-up means that those that live out of town must either make two long trips to Cocoa or take a couple days and pay for a hotel. I emailed the RD twice in hopes arranging race day pick-up but got no response. Another bad idea was starting the half marathoners 30 minutes before the marathoners. Why make those of us out there longest start later? We get further out of phase with friends and family running the half and also are left out in the hotter part of the day.

Outstanding Volunteers
Ran the half in 2010 and finally got back to run the full in 2015. Volunteers are both spirited and organized; they give the race some extra oomph.
Appreciated:
corrals at the start;
pancakes and eggs at the finish;
opportunity to swap shirt for size at the expo;
the icy cloth at mile 21, so needed!
Very lovely finish area, good for families and friends.
Dr. Musgrave added an air of authenticity to the weekend; very much enjoyed him.
Downer: the rude half marathoners who were ignorant of the faster marathoners on the last quarter of the marathon course. They really need to be chided or somehow threatened with disqualification if they walk 4 abreast or all over the road.
Suggestion: offer a singlet option instead of yet another long sleeved shirt.

Great marathon
Marathon was great. Perfect temperature. Nice course. Beautiful scenery when running by the beach. Flat compared to other marathons I have run. Volunteers were numerous and very helpful. Medal is one of the best I have received. Downside: Packet pickup was so crowded by Sat. afternoon that it was actually hazardous. If the fire department had made a visit, they would have shut it down. They really need to find another venue for packet pickup before next year. Lower rating for organization is for packet pick-up.

Nice race. Worth the medal!!!!
First off the medal is the best I have ever gotten (better than Disney)! If for no other reason run this for the medal. The picture does not do it justice.
That said the start was a little crowded but I've been in a lot worse cattle drives so no big deal there. Also it is not really as flat as you might think. To a runner 'flat' means 'pancake' with a couple bumps. This was mainly rolling with nothing steep. So again, not a problem just not what I expected. Biggest problem was lack of TP in the port-a-lavs at the start but I'm sure they've heard about that already and will correct that for next year.
Okay now the good stuff. Weather was beautiful although a little warm for us northerners (not complaining!). Running along the water was very enjoyable. Support along the course was awesome (a big plus)!! Loved the GU's every mile after 13 (I needed them). Free shirt is very cool. So are the 'not free' ones but get there early. I was at the expo before noon and sizes and colors were already running low. And last but not least the MEDAL!!! You can have the worst race of your life, the medal will still cheer you up!! Super cool!! I will be back next year!

Fun theme, however monotonous with a slanted road.
This was my first marathon, and I went into it with high expectations due to the reviews and recommendations of friends who have run this race in years past.
The expo was very crowded, and I'm in agreement with another reviewer that they need a bigger location. Highlight was meeting Bart Yasso who was on hand at the Running Start booth. I was incredibly disappointed when I was informed at the shirt booth that they had NO small or medium shirts. None. According to the person at the table, the order didn't go through. You had an entire year to plan this race and you didn't know your shirt order wasn't going through? I was so disappointed that I was not going to proudly wear my first marathon shirt home on the plane as I had imagined.
The race...thoroughly enjoyed first half, looking out over the water and and the homes along the road. The second half... was the same. Same water. Same houses. Same people passing on the other side of the very crowded, narrow road. Word of warning - the road is slanted on both sides toward the shoulder from the center. I assume this is for run off with heavy rains, but for the knees and ankles it is brutal and lasts the entire race.
Post race was great. Plenty of food and it was nice to get the finishers beach towel and took the sting out of not getting a shirt. Metal is great.
Overall this marathon did not live up to the glowing reviews. I just finished messaging the admin on their facebook page regarding the missing shirt, and she told me I should have written down my info at the expo. ?? I was never told this, asked a friend and they knew nothing of this either. I hope we get them. Also - no words of apology EVER, today or at expo that they had no shirts for finishers.

Loved theme, didn't love course
If you are looking for a destination race, as I was, this race was in a very fun location- Cocoa Beach. The organization was great, and I enjoyed the space theme. I thought I would love the course by the description, but found it to be very crowded at times. Since it is an out and back for many parts, at times I was dodging people since we were sharing one side of a 2-lane road. I did not exercise the Galloway method myself, though respect the method, but found it hard to navigate large groups of walkers with the race being only on one side of the road. I am just an average paced middle of the pack runner, and found it to be a challenge only at times. Overall, all racers were all respectful and seemed to have a great time. Not as much camaraderie as I have experienced in mid-western races that I am accustomed to, but everyone was friendly. Definitely stay awhile in Cocoa Beach, it is a relaxing, great little town.

Smooth operation, from lift off to touchdown
LOVED this race. Expo was small, but smooth. Course was a double out & back, which didn't thrill me in New Orleans. It was very scenic as it ran along the Indian River. GREAT race support, and the volunteers were stupendous.
Swag was just as well done. The long-sleeve tshirt looks great. The medal... well, the medal is why I chose this race in the first place.
I recommend it without reservation. If you have a chance to do this race, do it!

Great small marathon
Excellent race, perfect place for a great small marathon, well organized, very friendly, good crowd during the course, my only recommendation is with the expo, need better and bigger place. Expect some hilly parts for Florida complete flat standards.Definitely in my schedule for 2015.

WELL ORGANIZED
I have run this race seven straight years and as long as I am healthy will continue to run Space Coast. I PRed the marathon this year. Slight rollers on coarse, great support with water stations, FANTASTIC Medal, tech shirt, and beach towel.
You can eat more calories than you burn after the race, pizza, breakfast, plus!!!!
THe Piercy's are great in their organization.
Perfect theme for the area.
Yes the first mile or two is tight and seeded corals would help but DO THIS race it is worth it.

Crowded Course!
First time running this half marathon. Nice medal. Fairly well organized. The big disappointment was in the race start. No waves, just a mass start of nearly 3,000 runners on a narrow street. It was simply too crowded and the pack did not break up very much for nearly three miles. I should have been able to PB but my 5k split was way too slow because of the crowd. I was able to pick up the pace for the last 10 but not enough to make up for the very slow start. The course was OK but narrow the entire distance and I had to dodge and weave a lot. It was worse than a Disney race for a crowded course. I was hoping to do this race again next year but if it is on the same course without wave starts, I'll pass.

Felt like a part of history!
Loved it AGAIN! Marathon # 76 for me (2nd doing this race). I place the organization of this race in the top three of all races I have been a part of. I fell/ tripped around mile 14 - helped right away and was soon able to get back running (although with a slower pace)... The way we are treated at the finish line is as if we we all the first runners in! More than enough food and fluids for all! GREAT medal, shirt and towel! LQQKING FORWARD to next year already!

Loved it! GREAT staff! Challanged by growth
This was my 13th marathon and favorite course. Traveled with 20+ from our St Pete group. Some had PR's and it was 1st marathon for several. One of our 1st timers was on the course for over 8 hrs and although the staff had to start tear-down (understandable) they left the finish line up until the last finisher crossed. Cudos and thanks to them for that special effort.
I loved the small race feel of this event. Hopefully small 'tweaks' can be made in the crowded expo venue, crowded starting line and additional post-race transportation can be made for 2014 but these were minor issues.
I would love to see a priority 1st chance at registration (maybe 48 hr? ) for those that ran 2013 to prevent early sell out and being shut out of continuing pursuit of the Big Bang Series.
Many thanks to all that worked so hard to provide a mostly great event.

Great first marathon
This was my first marathon and I am glad I selected this one as my first. The race was very well organized. The course was somewhat hilly (at least Florida hills) lol... The runners were so friendly and the volunteers were absolutely fabulous. The health and fitness expo was rather small and busy, but still everyone was friendly and having a great time. The race itself was very good. The end was well organized and plenty of food for everyone. There was coke products, juices, pizza, pancakes, eggs and fruits. The medal and towel were awesome. I cannot wait until next year.

Running with Larry Hagman
Near-perfect marathon. I originally planned to do that other, more popular marathon near Orlando, but a 50-state marathoner told me about this one. Glad I listened to him. Affordable, easy registration and frequent email notices. Fun, no-hassle expo at the Kennedy Space Center. Shuttle bus transportation from hotels to race start. We met a lot of marathoners at both the hotel and at Brano's Italian restaurant in nearby Cocoa Beach, so there was a lot of camaraderie. The race course lacked variety, and there wasnt much crowd support, but the scenery and smooth road more than made up for it: 2 loops along beautiful Indian River, one north of town and one south, and the southbound loop tied in with the half-marathoners. Many beautiful waterside homes, seagulls, ospreys. Frequent liquid stops, with gels offered every mile after mile 13! Great festive finish at a circular, grassy amphitheater, with pizza, beer, bagels, bananas, pancakes, eggs. Finishers' medals aren't too important to me, but this one dwarfs any of my others - it was a HUGE rocket replica, more like a trophy. And a nice beach towel souvenir.
Just a few suggestions for the organizers: maybe offer hot beverages before the start, since it was pretty chilly until the sun started climbing. Maybe a louder announcement at the full and half-marathon split-off to prevent confusion. Also, my calves were screaming for a massage afterwards, and it was really disconcerting to be told at the massage tent - in a somewhat rude manner - 'No more signups, our masseuses need a break.' Really? I know they are volunteers who service a lot of people, but this was a real letdown. Even just a one or two-minute massage would've helped.
Still, a fantastic marathon, capped by phenomenal weather. This was the Florida entry in my 50 states quest. But I enjoyed it so much I'll definitely be back.

Great Course But Misleading
The course is very good but marketing is misleading in that this race is not even close to the space center. The expo is small and actually at the space center which is about an hour away from the race. Enjoyed the scenery and amenities but was disappointed as we came from New York just for this race.

Out of this world
If you like the feel of a small-town race and don't need the roar of the crowd this one is for you. Very well organised, lots of parking close by, lots of porta-pots as well as real bathrooms, beautiful finish area, a real-life astronaut, great themed aid stations and volunteers. Running along the river in the pre-dawn - spectacular. Get out there, run your 26, get your medal, enjoy the sunshine and a beer. I was top 5 and cheered home by lots of the half-marathoners. Great camaraderie.

awesome marathon experience
I don't know where to start. This was a wonderful marathon experience. Packet pick up at the Kennedy Space Centre, flat fast course with a few slopes,(no hills)after the marathon a large grassy area with plenty of food and beer provided. Water stops every mile, wonderful volunteers, crowd support almost non existent but who cares! Shuttle bus from hotel to and fro. Great medal plus a towel and teck shirt. 1 of my best experiences

Lovely course but a challenge logistically
Wonderful place to run! Great area and unique artisan area of Coca downtown was worth the trip alone. Solid management, but the race is challenged by its growth. Start and finish areas seem too small for the numbers of runners. Getting to the expo...though in a wonderful place...was a challenge. Great pace team! Overall, well worth the price of admission. Here is hoping the race can grow while maintaining its unique small marathon appeal.

This is a fantastic small marathon
This is a great small marathon. I ran the full . The start line is in the center of town. The full marathon runs north and the half marathon runs south as you leave town. At 6.5 miles the full marathon turns and comes back to town and continues south to run what the half marathoners are in the process of finishing up. It's fun seeing the half marathoners as they are running back north to finish. The first leg of the full has a lot of rolling hills. Nothing too steep but.... rollers. The second half has less rollers. The expo at the Space Center is approx 20 miles north of the start line ( wish that was closer). The vendors were few but nice. Easy access to get your race packet. Plenty of water and gatorade stops along the course. The course is very fair to the runner. Our 3:35 pace guy (George) was great. If you're looking for a GREAT small town marathon.... look no further.

Excellent Half!!
I ran the 2010 half marathon for the first time. Very well organized, nice scenic route and great support. I'm thinking of doing the full in 2011. My only complaint to the organizers is the expo. For a race this size this has to be the weakest expo I've ever seen. Go check out Gasparilla in Tampa or Disney and see what they do. Perhaps a bigger venue is needed because it was over crowded and not many vendors. I expected more for a race this size.

Effortless!
Between the registration, email communications, course layout and amenities, the organizers of this race put on an effortless event. I was able to register online, and received frequent email updates and reminders about the event - and then the packet pickup was smooth and easy. There is an EXPO at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Center as well as a pre-race dinner - what a wonderful location!! As far as the race, the support along the route was wonderful and well laid out. Each water station featured volunteers in different space costumes. After the race I enjoyed the pancake breakfast as well as the free pizza! I will do this race every year that my body allows.

Nice route for a half; boring for a full
The course was really beautiful, but it was a very boring marathon with barely any spectators supporting/cheering on the first 13.1 miles. You run along the river and beautiful homes north 6.5 miles then turn around on the same road and head south. The second half of the full runs south 6.5, back 6.5. Although the course was pretty, it was extremely boring. There were spectators but they were few and far between on the north end, which made it very lonely to run. The marathoners were spaced out too since it was a small race. It was so boring running the same route and without the energy from the spectators. I've run 15 marathons and about gave up at 11 miles out of boredom. It was hard to stay motivated and this was one of my worst runs despite having great training. The finish was nice but lots of turns on a narrow brick path, which made it difficult to really pick the pace up. I was worried I would trip on the bricks! The organization was good, and the volunteers were great. It's just such a small race that out-and-back makes it really difficult to stay motivated without a lot of spectators. I wouldn't mind doing the half but never again would I do the full.

Beautiful waterfront course with slight rolling hills perfect for fast times. This is a perfect course for a PR. There were plenty of volunteers and water stops along the course and everyone was very supportive of the runners. Thanks to the Running Zone for putting on a great and organized race!

Excellent marathon
Great choice for checking off Florida:
Pros:
1. Excellent medal and tech shirt - really colorful design and size. They even give you a beach towel.
2. They split off half-marathoners about 500 feet into the race so you don't have the congestion. I wish every marathon did this! Marathoners run out-and-back north before doing the half-marathoner's out-and-back south course, so even slower marathoners get to see other runners instead of doing that lonely 13-mile trek.
3. Scenic, relatively flat course. Weather was perfect, with a nice breeze coming off of the river. Beautiful oceanside view and many scenic homes to keep things interesting.
4. Aid stations - many had GU and the attendants dressed in space themes (Jedis, Darth Vader, stormtroopers, I Dream of Jeanie, Avatar, etc.) - every 2 miles.
5. Nice finish area going halfway around a circle with finishers lounging around on the inside and a big screen showing finishers. Plenty of food.
6. There was a $10 discount for Marathon Maniacs.

Great smaller marathon.
The Space Coast Marathon is a great race with nice course and fantastic organisation. The split course with the marathoners going north while the halfers went south was great so we weren't running in a crowd. Wish all races did this. Not many spectators (which is no big deal) but what ones were out were great. I gave 4 stars for race organization only due to some of the aid stations mostly in the second half of the race. The second half of the marathon is run on the half marathon course, so I don't know if the volunteers were tired of handing cups out or what. Some stations needed more people as the ones there were not getting cups out. Had to grab cups off the table a couple times even though there was only a handful of runners. Some stations needed to fill the cups more. Other than that, the course was great. Even though it was 2 out-and-backs, there were enough small elevation changes and the road was quite curvy to keep from not getting boring. Awards were the coolest; I got a nice, framed photo of the space shuttle for my age group placing. Nice medal as well and I love getting a towel instead of a mylar blanket at the finish. Plenty of food and friendly people.

Beautiful riverside route with great crew support
This was a great race. The start is in downtown Cocoa, which is a charming town square that is beautifully lit up in the early morning with lights in the trees. When the large video of the shuttle takes off, the race begins. The entire route is by the river, and the scenery is really pretty. Some runners even saw a few dolphins. The crews are friendly and dressed in space suits, handing out Gatorade and water at every mile with a smile. The best part of the course is the finish, but in this race it is extra special because you get a real beach towel, nice medal, and a large egg, sausage, and pancake breakfast. The price is right and the scenery can't be beat. I've done some large races like Chicago and Washington, and I enjoyed this smaller race just as much.

Wonderful First Marathon
This is a great marathon to do for the first time. The race is right along the water. I saw dolphins in the water at about mile 8. Gatorade/Water/GUs were at nearly every mile. The constant access to porta-potties along the route meant that the wait was never more than 30 seconds (timed it).
The only challenge about this course is that, when you start the second half, you must pass the finish line. It tests your dedication. However, it joins the half marathon course and so more spectators are available.
I would do this race again because the medal and seeing dolphins was worth it.

Well planned medium-sized event, with class
My favorite marathon so far. Pasta dinner, pace groups, scenic view of the Banana River, an astronaut theme, and one guy race walked on stilts! Great food afterward - a complete breakfast. Parking was free and close. Early start for weather.
One problem is the finishing area, which circles around in a small park and makes it hard to see the actual finish.

Run Space Coast - you will like it
This was my first time running the full marathon at the Space Coast Marathon (I ran the half three times). I enjoyed the full.
Pros:
1. Parking is easy - you are within 3 blocks of the start line.
2. Long-sleeve tech shirt that is of high quality.
3. Medal that is big and themed.
4. Towel at the finish line.
5. Food - pancakes, pizza and plenty of it.
6. Easy packet pick up.
7. Volunteers who really get into the space theme - Star Wars, Star Trek... you name it and it was there.
8. Out-and-back course with some very small hills along the St. Johns River. Some hills help the legs, so I hit my PR by 13 minutes.
For a race with 3,000 runners, it is very well run.

Nice destination race for northern runners
All in all, this race was very well done. The weather was perfect. I realize, of course, that race directors cannot control the weather, but still, it was perfect running weather. Low humidity, maybe 50 degrees at the start, 65 or so when I finished 4:06 later. The course needs work at the full-marathon turnaround. Another runner commented on this, and I agree with his/her statements. Other than that, I loved the course. Flat, winding road right along the Indian River. Beautiful. Plenty of aid stations and enthusiastic volunteers. Nice medal, and the towel was a very nice touch. The park and downtown area where the race started and finished are beautiful. The hotel was nice, and the bus service to and from the race was appreciated. There are very few spectators on the course, which I don't care about too much. But if you are looking for cheering crowds, this is not your race. The race provided what I wanted - a nice scenic course in a warm (but not too warm!) weather area, a nice hotel, solid organization, and an overall great experience. I would recommend the race to runners from northern climates looking to get away from the late-fall chill.

My first - would definitely do it again!!!
After my cross-country season this year, I decided to try a half-marathon. This one was local and perfectly placed right after the state finals. For me, it was quite a large race, but it was very open and not at all intimidating. I'm definitely recommending it!!!

Nice
This is a nice small marathon. Well organized, and very friendly. The expo was small, yet I managed to spend $200! The weather was good for Florida (cool and not humid). I got to see several dolphins along the course. The slant in the road led to some knee pain for me by mile 20. The aid stations were plentiful, as were the volunteers. Minimal spectators though, so the second out-and-back was quiet. I didn't like the traffic jam with the half marathon runners along the first portion, nor the cars that were out once the sun came up. The pace groups were a nice treat, and the leaders were engaging. I hope they improve the second part of the course from mile 19-20, which had a weird u-turn and curve through a neighborhood. It seemed to waste a lot of steps and energy covering that mile. The Radisson was one of the host hotels and my room had roaches and ants! Had to check out and stayed at the Holiday Inn Express. Loved the pancakes at the end and the space theme was a hit.

Nice course, and fun
I really enjoyed this course. The expo was small but enjoyable. There was still something there to suck $60 out of my pocket. I signed up for the pace team there too. The host hotel that I stayed at was excellent. It was next door to Ron Jon's and I used the buses to get to the marathon on Sunday morning. There were two times that the buses left: 0400 and 0445. The 0400 bus was just about empty. There were plenty of signs to find the start line, bag check-in, etc., and plenty of port-o-johns.
Course was somewhat crowded for the first mile or two, but after that it spread out. There were a few "hills" if you are from Florida, but if you are used to them, you'd call them flat. There was plenty to look at while running. Nice houses, old and new. Running along the river was pretty with the sunrise.
There were plenty of water stops and port-o-johns along the course, and the volunteers working them were exceptional. Plenty of gels. Some of the themes at the water stops were Star Trek, Star Wars, Buzz Lightyear, and I'm sure that there were others, but I don't remember them. There was only one band on the course but I could hear them for about a mile. They were just before mile 13.
The finish was nice, and was the only part of the course with lots of spectators. Good food at the end and plenty of Cokes. All of the water in bottles was gone by the time I finished (4:19) but there were coolers with cups for water, so I just filled up my own water bottles.
Pace teams were excellent! First time I used one and they were right on time.
Although there were not lots of fans along the course, those that were were loud and friendly. They'd call out your name and ring those cowbells as loud as they could.
Took the bus back to the hotel after the race and enjoyed the hotel pool for about an hour.
This was a very nice, easy-going race. Medals were cool along with the long-sleeve tech shirt and towel. If you like a smaller race (2,500 runners) that still has plenty of fanfare, then I'd recommend running this. If you are into the large, 20,000+ runners, then don't run this one. This one is worth running again!

This is a must-do race!
This marathon was great. It was smaller than the other two I've run, but has the feel of a bigger race. Water/Gatorade every mile or so after the first half, with many options for gels (GU, PowerBar, Shot Bloks). It was very organized, bag check was easy, and they had great post-race food. Not many spectators, but the water stop helpers dressed up in space-themed costumes and were great fans. My only con would be how cambered the road was. Being an out-and-back course, it was hard to avoid the constant slant of the road. All in all, it was a great race. I PRed and BQed. I definitely recommend it. :)

Excellent race. Loved it! Worth the travel
Enjoyed this run very much. I actually did the half-marathon. It was my first race since my marathon in 2004. Beautiful water-side course. Mostly flat with a few gradual bumps that gives legs a little variety. LOTS of water and Gatorade. I took a hand-held 10-ounce bottle and barely used it. I loved the themed and enthusiastic water stations. I thought it would have been quite warm from start to finish, but it was chilly at the start and then warmed up. I got the Florida weather wrong, but the day turned out great. Excellent pizza at the end (pancake line was long).
The pasta party the night before was excellent - fun, good food, nice venue at the Radisson and it was interesting to meet and hear Jeff Galloway.
Only things I would have wanted improved would be a bigger expo and true-to-fit-sized technical shirts (they ran big, at least for women). I traveled internationally for this race and would do so again. Fantastic race!!!

Very Satisfied with This Marathon
The Space Coast Marathon was exactly what I expected - and that's good! The course was lovely and the race organization exceptional. The second half has very few spectators, but I knew to expect that from reading previous comments posted here. With the exception of the water station volunteers, the rest of the Cocoa community seems oblivious to the fact that there's a big race going on. The pace groups were an excellent addition to the race.

A Marathon Everyone Should Try
Great race. The organization was the best I have seen in the 10 marathons I have run. The workers and volunteers were encouraging and helpful. The course was flat and scenic, but the road was tilted, which causes a bit of soreness the next day. The only thing that could help this race is to have some nice hotels near the start/finish line, but do not let that keep you from doing this first-class race! It is well worth your training and time!!!

Can't be Florida at this time of year.
The course is very flat. It goes north and south with the Indian River on one side and beautiful homes on the other. It's beautiful but not varied.
The course also limited the ability of fans to see you. It was hard for family to get to points on the course. But I'd rather have the pretty course. The fans that were out there were great.
The first 13 miles (til the half-marathoners finished) were pretty crowded. I wouldn't mind seeing them start even a few minutes earlier to spread out the field a little.
I appreciated the late pick up for packets. Parking was fairly easy. Breakfast at the end was very good, but short on fruit and I imagine even sparser for the later finishers.
The space theme was great. I loved the costumes of the aid station volunteers. The gel and Gatorade were plentiful.
Thanks for a great race.

BEAUTIFUL COURSE!
Great marathon experience! The course is very beautiful - palm trees add shade! I saw dolphins jumping in the water. The weather was great. There was good course support (including police) throughout the course. Water/Gatorade at every mile! Loved the medal! Thanks for a great marathon experience!

Where has this race been all my life?
It's the day after the 2009 Space Coast Marathon, and I can't wait to tell the running world about what a great time I had yesterday.
The Space Coast Marathon does all of the essential things so well. The food is terrific, the goody bag is stuffed to overflowing, the flat course is gorgeous, the tech shirt is cool enough that I would wear it again, the space theme is fun and very well executed, and the staff pulls it all together so well that I can't wait to go back.
But what I will really remember is that the Space Coast Marathon gave me a spectacular experience on a day that started out disastrously.
I arrived late - so late that I had given up all hope of finishing the race in the seven-hour window. But when I got there, the race organizers were determined to give me the absolute best race experience they could. A volunteer at the start, impressively dressed like Buzz Lightyear, sent me down the half-marathon course while he looked for my number. My brother met me on the course with my number, and I got to finish the course with an official bib.
By then, word had spread along the route about the woman from out of town who started the race so late. I didn't deserve the attention to detail that I would have gotten if I had arrived on time, but race organizers gave me that and more. All along the course, they were cheering me on and making sure that the course didn't close up before I passed. I finally did finish the full marathon - not the last one to do so, I should point out - and the race organizers estimated my real time for the website.
During the course of the day, I even got to meet a few wonderful Cocoa residents: the hotel clerk who helped me find the race and the woman from the race neighborhood who jumped in to pace me the last few miles.
Here are a few suggestions to make sure you have the same great experience I did:
*Check the weather. Because the race starts at 6 a.m., you should miss the Florida heat, but there are no guarantees.
*Be prepared to enjoy the scenery. It's a smaller race, which makes it friendly and convenient, so there aren't a lot of spectators as you finish the full.
I can see why they've been running this race for 38 years. My rule is that I'll never do the same marathon twice, but I'll make an exception for the Space Coast Marathon.

Terrific organization makes for a great race.
I had a great day at the Space Coast Marathon. This was the best organized race I've ever done. There are so many aid stations, and all of them after the halfway mark have gels too. I loved getting a beach towel at the end.

BEAUTIFUL COURSE BUT LONELY 2ND HALF!
The course is beautiful and I love the two equal 13-mile loops. The second half is very lonely though... hardly any runners and even fewer spectators. They do a great job with the water and GU stations every mile throughout the the second loop. I would definitely consider doing this race again. Weather was windy but the perfect temperature for me... maybe a little warm for out-of-state runners.

Loved the half almost entirely.
I did this half as part of my training for my full in Phoenix in January. I really loved the course, the big, cool medal, and the after-race buffet. Just a gorgeous course the entire way! A few very small hills kept it interesting. The medal is a massive astronaut - very impressive! I couldn't believe the spread at the finish! They were making pancakes fresh on the spot! They also had bagels, sweets, fruit, and all kinds of drinks! Fabulous!
Now, just some very minor items that can be improved on. At the second water stop, the volunteer was alone and didn't have the cups out of the sleeve nor any drinks poured. We waited around for about half a minute and took off. The other suggestion would be to have more seating at the pasta dinner. We came in about an hour into it and there was not a seat to be had, very little pasta, and hardly any drinks. We took our plates out by the pool and listened to the one-man band out there. I would, without hesitation, recommend this run though. Super! Thanks!

Great course, well-organized, small-town feel
This was my second marathon and first Space Coast Marathon. It was extremely well-organized by Running Zone and the volunteers were the best. Plenty of aid stations, water, Gatorade and GU along the way. Quiet, shaded, residential, scenic course along the river - mostly flat with minor hills. And a great finish at a beautiful riverfront park with excellent breakfast food and music and pumped-up race organizers. I'll never forget one woman at the finish line asking me, "What's your bib number, sexy?" And it was a PR for me.

The best (out of a couple hundred) race I've done
If you can't enjoy this race, you need a new hobby. Your name is on your bib, and people encourage you by name the whole time. Aid was perfect. Organization was perfect. The course was just plain gorgeous. I usually do trail runs, but have done everything from Old Kent to Peachtree, and I have never had such a good experience at any race.

Thank God for the Volunteers
This was my first marathon and I was lucky enough to take second in my age group. Not many spectators, but the volunteers made up for them. At my lowest moments they were helpful, encouraging, and I felt they were the real spectators. Very organized, pretty flat course, and an exciting finish line - of what I could remember! (I was exhausted.) Tons of water, Gatorade and GU. The only con was feeling alone a lot in the second half (not many runners around me), but it was a fantastic event and an experience that I WILL NEVER FORGET.

Great post-Turkey Day fun!
This run is small, but that's the best kind for me! My sister-in-law ran the half and her husband ran the full based on my enthusiastic reviews of it from last year, and they had a great time too. The support is more than adequate (more GU than anyone should ever need). It's beautiful to see the ocean as you are running, and if there aren't a whole lot of spectators at points, it allows you the time to appreciate the view. There are plenty of people cheering you on at the end and the run into the park is fun. I can't thank everyone out there enough for helping me have a great day.

Small town race with big race feel
What an amazing HALF marathon! Well organized, with a beautiful course and so much value for your entry fee. We received 2 meals (pre-race dinner, post-race breakfast); a long-sleeve tech shirt; a full-size beach towel with the race logo; and a GIANT and beautiful finisher's medal. The space theme was awesome, too. Volunteers were so friendly and helpful and the course support was excellent. We'll be back for sure!

Great half, but lonley full. Slanted roads.
This is a fun small race, but I recommend the half marathon, not the full. Out of 2,000 runners, maybe 500 do the marathon so it gets pretty lonely out on the course after mile 13. The course is on a beautiful, tree-lined street along with water. It gets pretty windy, but the breeze is refreshing. My only real complaint, aside from the marathon being so small, is that the road is extremely slanted, especially on the second half, and you can't really avoid the slant by running in the middle. I had to stop and walk for three miles because my knee couldn't take it after 22 miles on the same slope. Otherwise, its a good race if you want something that's not too crowded.

Great race and walker-friendly
I did the half marathon here 2 years ago and enjoyed it so much that when I read the time limit would be extended to 7 hours, I jumped at the chance to do the full in 2007. It's a beautiful, serene course, spectators are neighbors who come out to cheer people on, and, despite last year's heat, it was a great deal of fun. The pasta dinner is good and the speakers are top-notch. There is a handy shuttle to the start from area hotels (so I don't have to wake my sleeping husband for a ride in the wee hours). An all-round good time!

YOU NEED TO COME TO THE SPACE COAST
The Space Coast Marathon stepped it up BIG this year, yet still had a small-town feel for the the whole event. My second year running and I WILL BE BACK in 2008. The participants grew threefold, yet I did not experience any confusion from check-in to the finish. Great finish line with full towels and plenty of food.
The Piercy's are to be commended for putting on a first-class event to make each and every runner fell special.
Having Joan Benoit Samuelson on the same course running, and seeing her on the way back at the turn-around was a thrill; it was great to see a legend pass me by (she can still fly at 50). You do not have a lot of spectators. But the course is beautiful along the Indian River.
My only recommendation is to increase the size of the medal in 2008 and put some lettering on it. Nice idea making it an astronaut.
I will see you again in 2008 and still tell on my running mates about the Space Coast Marathon.

Beautiful, serene and shaded course!
This was my second full marathon, but I have also participated in other half and relay marathons throughout the country. I loved this course; it was picturesque and a huge highlight was at mile 14, to see dolphins playing along the waters edge! I enjoyed it immensely and would run it again, but I do have to say the medal - astronaut or not - was a huge disappointment! After receiving a medal from the USAF Marathon, given by a general, the astronaut looked like a child's toy medal! I also found it confusing to find exactly where the event was to be held the day before. It must have been thrown together just a few hours before the event! Regardless, I did enjoy the scenic and serene course!

Overall a great race
I have run 5 marathons and this race was my 6th half-marathon. It was a beautiful run, along the inter-coastal the entire race; however the start seemed a little disorganized and even though I was towards the front of the pack, I could not pass because the narrow street. I would recommend corrals. First mile in just under 10 - and not by choice. The finish was great, on stage with lots of support. The final miles of the race lacked water stations and I found myself very thirsty. Not a bad race; I'm sure it will get better in the years to come. I would recommend this 1/2 marathon; however, I would think twice about running the full at this location.

Great experience - beautiful course
This was a great race (I ran the half marathon) even with the heat and humidity.
* beautiful course
* shuttle blastoff on the Jumbo-tron at the start was great
* nice technical shirt
* meeting Joan Benoit Samuelson at the packet pickup was fantastic
* plenty of food/refreshments at the finish including pizza
Needs improvement...
* pre-race dinner was terrible.
* need more water stops on the course

Prepare for a great time!
This was a great race! The course was beautiful, tree-lined, with water on one side and nice homes on the other. Organization was very good. The support was more than adequate; they had Gu and sponges available in the first and second half of the race. The volunteers were enthusiastic. The post-race food was plentiful and diverse; you can't go wrong with pizza. The beach towel instead of a mylar blanket at the finish was a nice touch.
Weather was warm this year, however I have lived in FL long enough to know it could have just as easily been in the 40's (like it was the week before the race). If you are looking for a well run, fun, scenic, flat and fast course, this one is for you. If you are looking for large cheering crowds, you might want to look somewhere else.

VERY NICE RACE!
Beautiful course and definitely a lot of bang for your buck.... A pre-race pasta dinner, very nice, long-sleeve technical shirt, very cute astronaut medal, and a beach towel that was handy for post-race sweat and lounging in the park during the awards!
I do question the logic behind leaving the timing chips out of our pre-race packets in favor of having us pick the chip up on race morning; the lines got a bit congested with the layout at the start area. And my only real complaints would be: 1) Not enough port-o-potties at the start area and 2) Seriously lacking in race souvenirs (only items available with race logo were a white polo shirt and a training jacket).

worth the trip
My running buddies and I LOVED this race. This was my 14th full marathon and definitely one of my favorites. It was very organized, easy to get to the race, and package pick up was at the free pasta dinner with great food. Did I mention that Joan Benoit Samualson was the speaker? They also had an astronaut named Mike McKinney give us a pep talk as the race had a space theme. He was great too. The course was beautiful! We might have finished sooner except we had to stop running twice to watch the dolphins we saw swimming right next to us in the Indial River! Water stops were plentiful. Everyone was friendly and helpful everywhere we went. Just a bunch of happy runners. The only reason you might not want to do this race is that in Florida in November, it's usually hot. In other words, you're not likely to get a PR. If you can keep that in mind, ease off your pace and enjoy everything else about why we do this.

Great, well organized, small marathon
I ran the full marathon this past Sunday, and was thoroughly impressed with the route, organization and amenities of the event.
I will definitely be back next year.
My only suggestion for improvement would be to consider adding pace teams.

Excellent for a first-time marathoner

Great Half Marathon!
I did the half marathon for 2007. While I do live in the flatness of FL, I did not expect some of the (albeit small) hills as my area is flat as a pancake. GREAT organization, easy pick up, easy parking and access to the start and finish. Spectacular course. Low on spectatators on the course, but that is OK. I will be back next year for sure.

Great overall event!
I ran the 1/2 yesterday and it was fantastic. The organization was great, the pre-race dinner and speakers were very good and inspirational, and there was beautiful waterfront course and a great send off with the shuttle lift off. I was a bit concerned when I found out the streets would not be closed, but it really wasn't an issue as it's a residential area early on a Sunday. It was really hot, but there was plenty of aid on the course, so that certainly helped. I can't wait for next year's! I highly recommend this event - great time.

GREAT LITTLE EVENT
Great little half marathon and marathon with superior organization.
Pros:
1. The COURSE is along the river with trees shading the path.
2. Easy to REGISTER and pick race material.
3. Very nice MEDAL - unique to Florida's Space Coast.
4. GREAT food at the end of race - HOMEMADE banana bread and cookies, bagels, pizza, frozen fruit bars, oranges, bananas - I was full after the run.
5. Nice gathering area in the park amphitheater - allowed for sharing good times with other runners.
6. Park your car and get in line within 10 minutes - and that included a trip back to my car.
7. Wet towels at the end of the race.
8. Caring people at the aid stations.
9. Marathon runners started 20 minutes earlier than the half so it was nice to encourage each other as we passed each other on the out and back.
Cons:
1. Some local cars pass but easily avoided.
2. Limited fans, which is common for small races - but the local residents came out a cheered from their driveways.
You can count on me returning and I have told everyone else in Orlando about the race. Worth the one-hour drive as the sponsor treated every runner as if the event was held just for them.

My first marathon will do it again!
This was my first marathon and I have nothing but good things to say about it. The course was beautiful and nicely shaded. My fellow runner were so helpful and encouraging. The staff and volunteers were excellent. I really enjoyed Santa giving out words of encouragement at water stop #5. I did ask Santa for one early Christmas gift - to complete the race. Thank you, Santa, for granting it. If you're looking for a first marathon, I would suggest you pick this one. Small group, so more than enough space to run.

Great small race!!
I was concerned about the later start (7 a.m.) for Florida, the course (out/back loop twice), and the potential for heat and humidity in late November, but I loved this marathon. The heat and humidity weren't bad and the course was mostly shaded. The course was awesome - very picturesque. River to one side and beautiful homes on the other side. The configuration of the course allowed me to better plan for the second loop, which was hugely beneficial.
I PR'd, so that has something to to do with my satisfaction with the race, but the organization and enthusiasm of the organizers and volunteers were great. This was my first small marathon and while the spectators were sparse, I didn't miss the huge crowds or competitors (I was mostly running against the clock anyways).
I had heard great things about this marathon from others and they were right. This is a great marathon.
Great job - I will definitely consider this race again.

Very Well Organized Small Race
I very much enjoyed this race along a two-lane residential smooth asphalt road parallel to the Indian River. The wooded pathway and the river breeze helped in cooling as the day wore on. The road was NOT closed to traffic, but the traffic was very light.
The volunteering effort at the aid stations was exceptional. But the stations should have been stocked with some food such as fruits and snacks. I was grateful that some spectators offered me some food when they heard me asking at one of the aid stations if any food was available.
The pre-race day pasta dinner was excellent and the presentation by Mr. Yasso was very entertaining. I only wish that it had started a little bit earlier.

Flat course where everybody knows your name...
Loved the bibs with name printed in large letters - allowed me to cheer on other runners and volunteers to interact with runners more personally. Well-organized race - extremely small expo but meeting and conversing with Bill Rodgers - who could ask for more? My first marathon and I was pretty pleased - have done several halves, most larger races. As mentioned by some others, the weather was hot this year - but water and Gatorade were readily available and the cold towels were great at the finish. But beware, it can be very warm despite average temps. The wind off the river was a bit overwhelming during my 2nd trip out. The out-and-back twice for marathon was not a big issue - lovely scenery and allowed me to see other runners. It was flat as promised.
Would have liked a bit larger or different color medal to differentiate between half and full but it was nice and distinctive. We stayed at Wakulla Suites - lot of room for the money. Great experience for me - I am hooked. I highly recommend this race.

Great race for a 1/2 marathon PR!
I ran this race 3 years ago when it was held closer to Melbourne. The Cocoa Beach locale is much more scenic and festive. This is what contributed to my PR:
1) No-fuss, low-key pre-race organization. Easy parking. As another rater said, it's great to just walk up to the start 60 seconds before the race without any issue.
2) An out-and-back course helps you to plan your race strategy for the last 6 miles.
3) I loved the names on everyone's race numbers. With the spectators being sparse, it was nice to be able to cheer on your fellow marathoners or 1/2 marathoners.
4) There was plenty of water. But the Gatorade flavoring was not very good.
5) The post-race treats were great. Especially the cold towel for your head.
6) Downfall for this race - it was unseasonably hot for this year's race (especially for a Chicagoan!). The start time could probably be pushed up a bit for the 1/2 marathoners (we started at 7:45 AM, marathoners at 7 AM).

Small, runner-friendly race
I ran the half marathon this past weekend and had a great time. I have run ten half marathons so far this year (2005) and this race ranks as one of the best. Very organized, easy packet pickup, not crowded, nice scenery, good crowds at the finish to cheer you home and enough water and food to go around. I prefer to run in races that are smaller, because the organizers focus on the runners and usually go all out to make sure the runners enjoy the experience. This race is a prime example of that. If you are in the central Florida area, or even south Florida, I would recommend this race. Great job!!

Very scenic small-town race
Yeah, we all love the hype of those big city marathons and of course they are nice on your running resume. But once you get those out of your system, everyone should try one of these 'low key' events such as the Space Coast Marathon and just run for the joy and pleasure our sport gives us.
Why? The course along the Indian River in Cocoa is beautiful with the rising sun. With only 175 starters you stroll to the front of the starting line 90 seconds before the gun. No wait for those dreaded port-o-lets. Water and Gatorade stations every mile with friendly high school cross-county athletes lending a helping hand. Very friendly locals who make you feel welcome. A first-class pasta dinner the night before and some guy named Bill Rodgers as our weekend speaker; great shirts and medals, great race photos online within 12 hours of the race. And the beat goes on.
A bit leery about a loop course? Well that can be mentally challenging, but with the scenic water front course, it really did not drain us mentally. Can it be hot in late November along the Florida coast? Yes, but again, come to this one to enjoy the merits of our sport and take the pressure off. Oh, one last thing.... Homemade goodies at the finish line! I never run Chicago but I doubt if the race volunteers there make homemade banana bread and chocolate chip cookies. We had plenty!
Great job and thanks to Denise the race director and her fine staff of volunteers!

Beautiful course
This is a beautiful course. I really enjoyed this race. It was as flat as advertised. The only hills may have been knee high. It is a double-loop out-and-back. I loved that. I knew what to look for on second loop. There were not many marathoners on the second loop, but plenty of half marathoners to pass and look at. There were only pockets of spectators on the course. Only at the turnaround did you ever get more than 20 feet from the beautiful river. The wind was a little rough on the second outward loop. The temperature was warm, but I love running in the heat. If you like double loops, you could not ask for a more beautiful course. I would recommend this race to anyone that wants a small race with beautiful scenery.

Fun Run in the Sun
I am reluctant to share my comments online, because this is the type of marathon you want to keep a secret.
In over 20 marathons, I have never run and out-and-back once, let alone twice, but I loved it. The course is beautiful. You run underneath a canopy of oak trees with Spanish moss, with estates on one side of the street and the water on the other with 100-foot-plus docks. Everyone has their name printed on their bib #, so it makes for a very friendly run. The medals are creative, colorful, and sizable. Included in the entry fee is a pasta banquet with Bill Rodgers. How can you beat a post-race party with ice cold beer, pizza, and frozen fruit bars? The truth is that spectators do not get a 5-star rating like NY or Chicago, but that should not detract from this event. As I mentioned, the benefit of the out-and-back course with your name on your bib is that you have the fellow runners cheering for you in place of spectators. Further, the lack of spectators and noise allows you to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Hope to see you next year....

Beautiful course!
I ran the half marathon. The scenery is fabulous - the course is a palm tree-lined, shaded street along the river. The event photos are spectacular - they truly show off the Florida landscape. The weather was a little warm for my tastes but the scenery, post-race party, support, medal and t-shirt made up for it. It was very professional and well organized. I would definitely recommend this event to anyone. I don't think I could have done the full marathon with the weather being so warm and running the same loop twice, but others might find that fine. If I am in Florida next Thanksgiving weekend, I will do this again and hopefully attend the event the night before, which I have heard is nice. And I will hope for temperatures in the 50s!!

Great for a first timer
I ran this half and full marathon. For a first timer it was perfect; it was small and the people were friendly. The weather was perfect and you couldn't ask for a more beautiful run along the river. The only thing I can criticize is that the full marathon is a repeat of the out and back half marathon, so it is a little monotonous. The previous year the race followed the river in the opposite direction; if both ends of the river were utilized, you could avoid this double loop. The refreshments and award ceremony were great and the whole event very well organized.

Even BETTER than last year!
I had a great time last year. This year was even better. Course was different than last year but still on nice quiet roads along the Indian River. Great views! The finish at the park was special. Great medals. Awards are so-so, but everyone is made to feel like a member of the Space Coast Runners family.

Great small marathon
Wonderfully organized race. I have to admit that I was a little skeptical about running 2 loops AND sharing the course with 1/2 marathoners. But this club pulled it off without a hitch. It never got crowded. Volunteers were enthusiastic. Just a great, small marathon.

Nice Little Marathon
I agree with the previous writer's comments, this is a nice little marathon. I especially liked the pasta dinner (included in the entry fee) the night before the race with Hal Higdon as the guest speaker. The course wasn't flat, but the hills weren't steep either. The terrain was just pretty rolling. On the negative side, the course didn't smell too good in a couple of places, as if there was a sewer that had overflowed.
The weather this year was very good because the temperature was in the 50's with overcast skies most of the time. Overall, I'd recommend this marathon.

Small, but nice
This route consisted of 2 half-marathon loops on a flat, paved and mostly shaded road that generally parallels the Indian River in Cocoa. The marathon starts 45 minutes before the half-marathon, so the course has the full complement (someone said 500 signed up) at one time. Even though this was an open course (i.e., there was car traffic), it was not especially crowded on the road. There is very little traffic on this road early on Sunday morning, except close to one church that had services. I think that the race could have accommodated at least 50% more people. After the half-marathoners (who were clearly the majority) finished, the course seemed notably empty.
There were water stops, apparently manned by students from local track teams, every few miles and porto-lets at the start and turn-around as well as at several construction sites in between. Gels were handed out in the second lap of the marathon. There were very few spectators, but they did have some young cheerleaders at the turn-around cheering for you and goading you on. Nice touch. There were only a few policeman, but there was hardly a need for them. The neighborhood seems quiet and principally residential.
Refreshments at the end of the race were plentiful, and included fruit pops, pizza, cut-up bagels, fruit, etc. The tee-shirt is a nice long-sleeved lightweight shirt that is good for running in Florida on a cool day.
Overall, a nice little race with a scenic flat course (except for a few 'Florida hills') that would be good for a PR.
Although this race cannot be compared to Disney or even Hops-Tampa Bay for size and scope, it is a very nice little race, apparently aimed mostly for locals. About the only negatives were that I found it difficult to find the starting line, not being familiar with the area, and parking was a very long way (about half a mile to the municipal parking lot in Cocoa Village) from the starting line. Get there early.

Great Half-Marathon Race and Weekend!
Really enjoyed the location of the race. The Cocoa Beach area is beautiful. The course was fairly challenging with a few small hills but other than that is pretty smooth and flat. I was able to see some dolphins in the water during my run and the scenery was gorgeous. It is a great race for beginners since it is not too large and the people were very friendly. The dinner and speakers the night before were great. I would recommend the half-marathon. The marathon was two loops of the same half marathon course, so if you don't mind the repetitive laps then it would be okay.
