Awesome course; I will miss this race!

Tampa is awesome! The course was very flat and fast - perfect for a PR. It's too bad that this was the final voyage for the Gasparilla 26.2. It was great seeing the sunrise over downtown from Davis Island and finishing along Bayshore Blvd. The volunteers were great and the spectators toward the end of the race were inspiring - especially all of the kids high-fiving at mile 25. That really helped me finish strong. Tampa, please bring this race back!

Awesome Experience!

I am pursuing the 50 states and am so thrilled that I was able to run this marathon before it disappeared. There were so many great things about it. I'll list just a few here: The expo was awesome and well-organized Bart Yasso at the expo!! Woo hoo! MORE than adequate fluid stations Flat and fast course Plenty of food and liquid at the finish, even for slower runners Plenty of awesome swag, including a tech shirt with embroidery, a hat, and a towel. Plus, an amazing medal! VERY QUICK responses to email and Facebook questions!! Volunteers were top-notch at the expo, on the course, etc. All miles were marked (though I missed a few) Excellent traffic control Wonderful host city and great host site at convention center Just a few things that would be great to improve, but these are MINOR compared to the MANY awesome things: The baggage line before the start was super-long Can you add more volunteers to this area? There were few spectators in certain areas, especially in the first 10 miles It would be great to offer a pasta dinner Overall, I give this marathon very high marks. I felt so cared for! I loved the young people around mile 24 with the white shirts. I could see and hear them from far away, and they ROCKED! It truly is sad that the marathon is going away. I'd recommend the rest of the races anyway, and I suggest staying at the Westin or Hyatt or Embassy Suites, all within a 5-minute walk of the expo and starting line. So glad that this was my FL marathon!!! Thanks so much to Susan and her crew!

GREAT MARATHON!

This was one of the best ever, and it really is a shame it was the last year - which is why I came out. Every detail was perfect. And when I apparently forgot to pre-register and didn't have enough cash on me at the expo, which had just closed, the wonderful volunteers took what I had and gave me a bib anyway. The course was beautiful, if a little crowded at points with the half runners; the aid stations were wonderfully staffed; and the banquet at the finish... wow. Great job, Susan!

Overall a great course, and fun event

Ran the Mich Challenge. Loved everything about all three races. The expo was well done. Received three tech shirts, and an awesome pullover hooded sweatshirt. Let's not forget the hat. The 5K was a little tough in the rain and nearly 10,000 people, but the 15K earlier was just perfect. Marathon weather was just perfect. I'm sorry to see this be the last. Overwhelming aid, water and Gatorade on the course. I cannot not say enough about the finish line - open till the last finisher crossed. Awesome marathon medals; the Mich Challenge medal was HUGE, and we got a finisher towel. I stayed in HOJO Plaza, within walking distance of the start line. Overall, a great experience.

Sorry to see this one end

I entered this race at the last minute after Myrtle Beach was canceled. This was truly a great race. This was one of the most organized runs I've done. The runners' packet was well stocked with a tech shirt, hat, and snacks. The course was pretty, with a combination of city streets and waterfront views. The only negative was not anything the organizers had control over. Like at most marathons, you had those walkers who for some reason just think they have to start at the front. They jammed things up for the first few miles. It's too bad that this race hadn't grown fast enough to keep it alive. If you missed this one, you missed a good one.

Bring it back, Rock 'N' Roll or someone!!

I had to run this race since it was the final chapter (hopefully someone will bring it back). It is an excellent course close to many downtown hotels. I stayed at the Hyatt and they did a tremendous job. The crowds were spread out, but were also very vocal and supportive. Davis Island and the Bay Boulevard (the out-and-back) section were very nice. Excellent: - Shirt - Medal - Expo - Pace groups The only improvement: they need to cover those darn bridges with a rug or red runner, like they do in Chicago. I would NOT fly there for only a half marathon.

A fun small marathon; a shame to see it go.

This was my second marathon, so my only comparison is the Flying Pig in Cincinnati, a much bigger race. I found the Gasparilla to be a lovely and well-organized run, very clearly marked with plenty of helpful volunteers. It's flat and scenic, though the wind coming off the Tampa Bay for the last 6 miles dried me out. I am very slow (5:27) but never lacked anything on the course, and the finish line was still fully manned with food, drinks, fans and a really nice medal. The second half is out-and-back, which meant I actually saw the marathon winner running toward me at one point with his lead car and all, which was exciting to me because I usually just sees other slowpokes. The dark start with the random traffic cones was a challenge (I saw more than one person bite it), but the sun coming up over the bay was worth it. The section over uneven cobblestones was not so welcome, but the buses bringing fans out to the distant miles to cheer WERE. Great weather; great people. Fewer fans than at the Pig, but the last three miles were lined with school kids yelling their hearts out, which was very helpful. I'm sorry that I won't get to run this one again.

Great Marathon

As a director of a race myself, I know how much work goes into putting on a great event. Susan and her crew did an excellent job. From the expo, to the marathon start, to the course, to the finish-line, the event was top rate. Congratulations, Susan, and thank you for a great marathon.

Great time in Tampa

This was the first time I have run the Gasparilla Marathon and my first time in Tampa. Overall, a very positive experience, and I am sorry to hear this is the last year for the full marathon. Positives: -Decent expo. Information booth was helpful for the questions we had. Packet pickup went quickly. -Nice, blue, long-sleeve, tech shirt and running hat. The towel at the finish line was a nice touch. -Start was easy to get to and line up at. -Course was almost completely flat and scenic, with a nice section along the waterfront. -Plenty of water and Gatorade stations. -Not a lot of entertainment and spectators, but those there were great, especially that section with all of the kids yelling for you. -Finish line went smoothly and I loved the medal. -Lots of food, including fruit cups, bananas, bagels, water, soda, and rice and beans. Negatives: -Only real negative I had was that the course really seemed bogged down for the first seven miles until the half marathoners turned off. Early into the race we came to almost a complete stop and we narrowed down to go over a bridge. But part of this was my fault, as I should have lined up farther up. I would recommend this marathon to anyone, so I'm sad to hear it is going away.

Fun Weekend

I ran the BUD LIGHT CHALLENGE - running the 15K and 5K on Saturday, and the Half Marathon on Sunday. This event was so well run, from the expo at the Tampa Convention Center to the great support for the runners. The PUBLIX SUPER MARKET that is at the start opened up early to allow runners to use the restrooms and stay warm. Way to go, PUBLIX. The volunteers are great, offering plenty of support and water stops. The people living in the area came out to cheer, and I guess the big thing I will remember is the Yellow Lab dressed as a pirate. If you're into medals, this was a goldmine - I got a total of four, and the BUD LIGHT one was HUGE. This was the last year for the full marathon. I'm sorry to see it go. I wanted to try it but waited too long. I will be back next year for the half though.

It was a perfect day for the final voyage

I am runner, not a marathoner. When they said that this was the last year, I used it as motivation. I think the city did a great job putting on a great event. I thought everything was first class. The pace group leaders were amazing.

A successful final voyage!

I couldn't pass up the final voyage of the Gasparilla. The weather was beautiful. It's too bad that this marathon will not return next year. The organization and support are outstanding. The course is scenic, and there is a strong police presence for traffic control. The crowds are great... and it's in a beautiful spot in Tampa! Well done! My only complaint is that it won't be back next year!

Good first-race experience.

I walked the half. Overall, I had a great time. My only complaint would be about the pass through downtown near the finish line. I was walking, and actually one of the last to cover the route. As we passed to the right of the finish chute and began our loop through downtown, the course was not well marked and we weren't even sure we were on course. Some who had already finished the race crossed through the course just beyond the finish line and seemed unaware that they were crossing through. I finished after the real medals were gone, but I greatly appreciate the fact that I received a real medal in the mail. It's awesome. The entire event was encouraging to someone who hopes to walk a half in every state and chose this one to start with. I'd love to come back, but I've got 49 others to do first!

Outside of the course, there's room to improve

This is my second year running Gasparilla. I ran the 15K in 2008 and the half in 2009. Pros: Beautiful course Plenty of water stations Right time of year and early start Convenient location Large expo Good food at the end Great finisher's medal Quality race shirt Body wrap at the finish Cons: They ran out of shirts for those pre-registered before 2:00 the day prior Heavy congestion for the first mile-plus The race packet contained little There were few trash cans at the finish No recycling They ran out of medals if you were slow (though I got mine)

Great job

Great job on the marathon in difficult conditions. In regard to the earlier comment: "Keep the PRAYER at the start - a little thankfulness in today's world is needed." I disagree... not everyone who runs the race is a Christian, or has any type of faith. Whereas I do not personally take offense, some do. So out of respect for "everyone's" religious views, I think we should separate religious customs from running events (unless they are promulgated by a religious faith based organization).

Count me in for the 2010 Challenge again.

This was my second Gasparilla Classic and I WILL BE BACK!!!!! I ran the Bud Challenge, and so my comments will relate to all three races. Pros: Easy PARKING close to the convention and the start/finish line. EXPO is good for a mid-tier marathon. The convention center was open on race days with real toilets - not port-a-johns. Great MEDALS - all four of them. I like the medal for the challenge versus the coffee cup they gave out last year. Keep the PRAYER at the start - a little thankfulness in today's world is needed. Finish line FOOD was top of the line and plenty of it. Cons: On the 5K and the 15K courses, they need pace signage. Way too many walkers and kids were at the very front of the line, creating bottlenecks in the first quarter mile. The full/half course slows down on the bridge, as the course is thinner. That causes a bit of a problem for keeping one's stride. The weather was windy on Sunday, but they have no control over that.

Half Marathoner: Nice course, well organized

This is only my second half-marathon, and I participated as a walker. I really enjoyed the course; the volunteers were great, and food was plentiful. Overall, a "walker-friendly" event. Great food at the finish. The expo was "easy in and out" and had some good samples. I will consider adding this to my FL vacation in the future. Weather was a bit rough - rain and wind.

well done

Well organized, and the many bands and fans were great. Weather and wind were a problem, but not a bad as they could have been. I wish a better map of the course had been provided. Some of the half-marathoners (walkers) were somewhat in the way at about the 13-mile marker. I would do it again; great job by everyone!!!

Nice, flat course, but the weather was terrible

The course was very flat - it definitely has the potential to be a PR race. This was my first Gasparilla Marathon and I enjoyed it. The only complaint I had was the weather... it was terrible. This was my 7th marathon and my first one I am commenting on. I read the other comments and saw people writing that the weather was perfect! The weather was perfect for about 45 minutes to an hour. After that, it was horrible. All in all, I did have my 2nd fastest time, but it was challenging with the weather. As with any race, the weather can't be controlled; but the organization and logistics were very good. I will run this race again. I also enjoyed the city of Tampa

The best half you will find

I've run the marathon once and this was my fourth straight half. Once again the expo was great. It was very easy to get my number and shirt. The expo itself had the usual selections, which never interest me much anyway except for the Sports Authority, which has some very cool looking event shirts. The start was organized, there were plenty of port-a-potties, and the convention center was open. The start was on time and the water stations were plentiful and well manned. You will be hard-pressed to find a better half-marathon course. That said, I will never run the marathon with its current layout. I was one of the faster half runners, so heading toward the finish I saw the congestion that the marathoners had to endure as the merged with the half runners around their 11-mile mark. They would also rejoin the really slow half runners at the 23-mile mark. This race is really geared toward the half runners and will never be considered much of a marathon until they change the course. And what's with the group prayer before the start? This guy went on for over a minute. Maybe the organizers can keep their personal beliefs personal.

Good course, my favorite medal yet

I thought this was a nice race and I was only about 2 minutes off my best marathon time despite the bad weather. The course looked like it would've been really beautiful along the water if it had been sunny out. Completely flat. The expo was good, but I really only go to pick up my number. I liked the pirate theme and loved the medal; it's my favorite yet. Really easy start to get to and not very crowded, compared to some other races. I just hopped right in around where my time would be, and was off. I loved the huge group of volunteers out on the course with about 4 or 2 miles to go. Can't remember exactly where now, but they were great. The marathon got a little lonely, and although I finished at a pretty good time for women, I felt like the marathon had the feel that it was closing down towards the end even though there would've still been people finishing for a few hours. Thank you to the man in the 3:30 pace group who gave me his Gatorade when I missed it and could only get water! That was so nice of him. The pace group leader was really nice and encouraging. It was hard weaving through miles 11 to 14 or so, with the tail end of the half marathoners on the course. Real nice marathon and I'm sure my impression would've been a lot better if it was better weather. Can't control everything, though - at least it wasn't raining at the start!

Brutal Weather/Nice Event

This was my first marathon and I was looking forward to running in warm weather after training in the cold. Oh well, that was shot after 13 miles with rain, rain, rain and lots of high winds. I had read previous years' comments about merging with the half marathon at mile 11 and didn't think it would be a problem, but it actually was a bit annoying. Also, why not run through downtown while it's dark and then enjoy Davis Island in the daylight? I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of support considering the weather and the "Let Me Play" kids were fantastic! Water was unevenly spaced, but there were so many stations that it didn't matter. Gels and oranges were also offered quite frequently. Course was scenic and interesting most of the way. Very flat... I don't even remember a hill! Medal was great (but I love pirates). Post-race food was the best ever - Spanish rice and black beans. Free beer was nowhere to be found.

There's nothing special about the Gasparilla Half.

The expo was a REAL disappointment. The merchandise was expensive and very cheap-looking. They were out of shirts when we got there, even though we had preregistered months ago. ALSO they ran out of medals!!! No crowds along the way. Water stops unorganized. Start too crowded. NO BEER!!!

Well done... well done... well done!!!

This was my first Gasparilla Marathon even though I am from Florida. I am so pleased to have finally done it! I really enjoyed the event. The weather was rainy and windy, but the views of the water were incredible. The course was very well marked and supported. No chance of getting lost! I have to congratulate the organization for a job well done! I am a walker and finished in over 6 hours, but I had support throughout the entire experience. The police were GREAT... the volunteers were GREAT... the medal was GREAT!!! Thank you, Tampa, for a great marathon experience! I'll be back!!!

Windy

This was a decent race, just on a very windy day. Putting the weather aside, I liked the race. Aid stations were oddly spaced, but they were very frequent, so no problems there. The early start was a little weird, as I am not used to racing in the dark, but is probably a life-saver on hot days. Overall, the course was decent - very flat and running by the bay was cool. You don't see much at the start because it is dark for the first 45 minutes. My biggest complaint with the course is that the marathon breaks off from the half at mile 7 or so, but then rejoins the half marathon at mile 11 or so, which is about mile 8 for the half-marathon. It was very tiring having to rejoin the group and weave through a large pack of half-marathon runners for 2-3 miles. This and the wind, which I assume is an issue most years (price of running next to the bay) slow down what otherwise could be a decent PR course. Medal was HUGE.

Well organized, flat, winter marathon

The rainy, windy day made for a challenging race this year. But, the weather aside, this is a very nice course. It is flat and has interesting scenery the entire way. The first half of the marathon does a couple of loops and the second half is an out-and-back. The volunteers are fantastic. I was happy with the cooler weather since I was running, but those volunteers had to be cold. Despite all of this, they were cheerful and encouraging. And, just before mile 24 there was a large group kids along the course cheering us on. I don't know what organization they were with or how many there were - it seemed like a couple of hundred. But at that point in the race, their cheering drove me to my second fastest mile of the day! I'm used to running marathons with only a couple of hundred runners, so I thought there were plenty of spectators along the route yelling encouragement. Someone used to big-city marathons may have a different perspective. My only complaint is that the half is run with the marathon for the first 6 miles. For the first half-mile of the race people were bunched up like a large marathon. When we joined back up with the half runners at mile 11, I was worried, but at that point they were strung out and it was slower people at the back, so it wasn't that big of a problem. There were no hitches in this race. The expo is well run, and large enough to be interesting. There were no problems with the race itself. There were volunteers outside of the finish area with water so those of us waiting for friends to finish didn't have to walk all of the way to the food tables. It's just too bad that it was raining and cold so that I didn't want to hang out around the food afterward. But, no one can help the weather.

Good but needs fine-tuning...

The good: * Excellent volunteers... enthusiastic and genuine about wanting to be out there helping the runners * Nice, long-sleeve, technical tee * Nice medal * Great post-race food... loved the rice and beans! * Plenty of fluids and gels throughout the course * The course itself... flat as they come * Oh my - pictures everywhere, so keep smiling The bad: * Did not care for the praying at the start line - keep religion out, please! * The steel grids on the bridge get slippery when wet - some carpeting would have been nice The ugly (real ugly and almost criminal): * Full and half marathoners merge between miles 9-10 and then you wind up running the next 3-4 miles with the slowest half-marathon runners (over 2+ hours). A lot of dodging and weaving - it was criminal, in my opinion Overall, it was a good race. But it's bad enough to mix the start of full and half runners; they really need to fix the course so that full and half marathoners don't merge so early in the run.

Well organized event with great volunteers

The terrible 2009 weather notwithstanding, this is a nice event - small enough to be manageable, but large enough to feel like a real race. The aid stations were numerous and the volunteers were terrific. I think the finisher medal is one of the best I've received. On the downside, there are few spectators and the route loops itself so you see many houses and landmarks more than once. The track is flat, but unless you're starting in the front, expect major delays during the first mile or two, as 5,000 people cram their way onto a narrow two=lane bridge, which takes you to Davis Island (major flaw in the route). It's likely you'll lose a couple of minutes or more in this mess as you're nearly halted to walking pace for about .25 of a mile. But, all that said, it's a friendly town with lots to do at that time of year - including spring training games, if baseball's your thing.

good, flat course and organization; very fun

I ran the half-marathon at a fairly easy pace, recovering after the full Pensacola Marathon two weeks ago. The race was well organized, and the course was flat and relatively easy. Highlights: awesome long-sleeve tech shirt, great-looking medal, fantastic food at the finish, donated by a local restaurant. Weaknesses: although water/Gatorade stops were frequent, volunteers (especially at earlier ones) were overwhelmed and could not keep up. They did not prepare cups in advance, so runners were backed up waiting for drinks. Also, runners were promised a free beer (beer coupon was on the bibs), but I searched at the end and no beer was to be found anywhere. I didn't NEED it, but once it was promised, I was looking forward to it and disappointed when it failed to materialize. Overall, a good race which I would run again in if TB.

I could not have asked for a better first marathon

Wow, I am so glad I picked Tampa as my first marathon. Coming from Ohio, I didn't know what to expect, but after reading the previous reviews, I decided to sign up. I could not have had a better experience. The expo was fantastic, and everything was close to the start. The race starts at 6 a.m., so it was a different experience racing in the dark. The weather was perfect. The fans and volunteers were amazing. A nice touch is that your name is on your bib, so fans cheer you on by name as you go by. Plenty of water stops, and lots of food, drink, and music after the race. Because I was a "maiden voyager," a bell was rung when I finished the race. I've run Virginia Beach's marathon and Athens, Ohio's since Tampa, and although those marathons are different and special in their own right, nothing compares to the outstanding organization and overall race experience Tampa offered. Thank you, fans and volunteers, for giving me the marathon bug!! I will be at this marathon every year!

Great Marathon

This year I ran the marathon for the 1st time. I ran the half the last 2 years. This was my fourth marathon. My first was Disney 2007. My second was Chicago 2007. My third was the marathon as part of the Goofy Challenge Disney 2008 (4 weeks ago). Having done Disney twice, despite the obvious appeal of the theme parks, they have nothing on Gasparilla. The Gasparilla expo is bigger and better, the course is much more scenic, and there are people all over the course. At Disney, there are definite dead spots. My overall impression of the Gasparilla Marathon course is: I loved it! It is as flat as can be and despite the small field (984 finishers), much of the course consists of out-and-back sections, so that you are always in the presence of other runners on one side of the course or the other. I was able to see both the male and female leaders twice on the course, as well as see Team Hoyt finish the half. The only bad part of the course is the ramp to get on to the Davis Island Bridge. It is a bottleneck and slows you down. Fortunately it is about the 3/4-mile mark so I look at it as it prevents you from running the 1st mile too fast. I definitely plan on running it again.

GREAT TIME!!

This was my 3rd marathon and I had a blast. It was super flat and perfect weather. The headwind at the last 6-7 miles on the water was not welcome, but other than that, perfectly put together. Also, I loved that there were A LOT of water stations through the course. Crowds were very enthusiastic and supportive. I will be back next year for sure.

Great race; please change the 6-mile headwind

It was an overall great race. It was fast and flat. Definitely a Boston qualifier course. Pace team was excellent. Please keep them coming for the following years. The only recommendation will be to detour the 6-mile headwind if possible.

Fantastic Marathon

This was fun! Coming from the cold of the Midwest to run in Tampa is an absolute thrill! Even the early early start posed no problems. Expo was one of the best I have seen. Pace team was fantastic! It is sooo nice to be in a place where the water doesn't freeze! The mime was a great touch along the course.

THE BEST FOR RUNNERS; GREAT FOR SPECTATORS

This is one of the best-organized events I've ever run. If you want to run a well-organized event compared to the the music marathons, without the huge crowds, this is it. This a a PR-setting, flat, fast marathon. I will consider this one while trying to qualify for Boston. It seemed like all the pace groups were right on target, if one would need their help to qualify. The expo was great - lots of vendors, well organized. Easy, inexpensive, close parking. Metered parking was also available. Lots of porta-potties, so hardly any wait at all. Free coffee and other samples before the race. Amazing post-race amenities. Lots of food and samples and a great festive atmosphere. The 15K was a bit crowded for the first couple of miles. The 5K was also crowded, but if you place yourself right it shouldn't be too bad. The marathon/half marathon begin together and then split at mile 7, just to rejoin later on. It flowed flawlessly. I ran the challenge and did not grow tired of the course. The course takes us through Davis Island. It was great running there in the dark; some people came out to their driveways to cheer us on. We ran through some beautiful neighborhoods, shady areas, through a park and then back onto Bayshore, where the headwinds were strong but refreshing. I was afraid of the heat coming back onto the exposed few miles, but at that point the sun was not right on our faces as I had thought it may. The timimg was perfect. The volunteers were plenty and they were amazing! The spectators were the best; they had their very own aid stations, offering beads, candy, donuts, coffee, water, Gatorade and many other items. My family, even though they are not familiar with the Tampa area, was able to see me six times and that's after taking an hour-long nap. I love the pirate theme and the medals are awesome - all three of them! Thank you, race directors, for putting on such a top-notch race. Thank you, PUBLIX, for helping keep this great race going.

Great event, but not perfect

This is the 3rd year in a row I've run the marathon in Tampa. Finished with a PR of 3:27 this year. Here's my take on the event: Strengths: 6 a.m. start; long-sleeve technical shirt; pancake flat course; excellent food at finish. Weaknesses: last 6 miles are along Bayshore and ALWAYS directly into a strong wind (ugh!); half marathon and full are run together, with a merge at ~12 miles of the marathon that lasts 3 miles and brings the faster marathon runners together with the slower half marathoners - not ideal. Overall, this is a great event that is well organized and worth putting on your calendar for the winter. Just be aware of the course issues, which I'm hoping the GDCA will address for next year.

Excellent Winter Marathon

I chose this race based on previous comments. I was looking for a race that could give me a chance for a BQ time. This one was flat and fast. The only unknown was the chance of high temps or excessive wind. The weather was a near perfect 52F to start while there was wind; it was not restrictive and helped keep me cool. This was a great city to run in and I really enjoyed the whole event. The smaller event made it easy to get around and my family got many chances to see me. I prepared for this in Canada with my last long run in -20F with wind chill. There is nothing negative I can say about running this very well organized event in Florida in the winter. Also being able to soak sore marathon muscles at the beach afterward cannot be beat. I got my BQ time for 2009 and recommend this event for a fast time.

I'd recommend it to friends!

Overall, this was a very well organized and enjoyable event. Here's my assessment: Strengths: Expo was great, many vendors, well organized, good deals. Race was very well organized, energetic and friendly fans, good security/traffic control. Race start/finish was close to hotels (I stayed at the Embassy Suites, just a few blocks from start/finish but not close to places to eat). Nice technical t-shirt. I liked the 6 a.m. start, which helped us to get a head start on the heat, even if running in the dark. Weather was ok, and the headwind on Bayshore (?) for last 6 miles was tough. Weaknesses: From my perspective, there was only one.... I personally do not like out-and-back courses, especially ones with two-way runner traffic.

I loved this event - Keep up the good work

This is a very well run event with a fun and diverse course. It offers a diversity of views in residential neighborhoods, waterfront, urban center, University of Tampa campus, and City skyline. Although it was windy this year, the course is flat and compared to northern winters, this is a welcome break from snow and bitter cold. I hope the marathon distance is continued, this is one I will plan to repeat.

4-star first marathon

This was my first marathon so I really don't have any others that I can compare it with. In general it was a great first for me! Regarding the course... I only gave it 4 stars because there were many times when I was the only runner around and I had to ask someone which way to run. (I was one of the slow ones, finishing 5:51:12, never having run in 38 years until last July!) There were plenty of port-o-potties, water and Gatorade stations, and helpful volunteers. Hats off to the many volunteers and bands on the course that cheered me on to the end! I didn't mind having the half marathoners with me because as one of the slower runners, I had company until the courses separated and all of a sudden there was just me and one or two others in front of or behind me that I could see. I could have done without the 22-23 mile per hour winds that I had to run against during my last 2 hours on the course! Oh well you can't count on weather, but I was thankful for the otherwise beautiful day - sunny and cool. The pasta dinner at the Hyatt was very tasty but the service and pre-planning on their part was not good. Dinner tickets were pre-sold but there seemed to be a timing issue with having breadsticks and pasta available when we showed up and stayed for an hour to hear the great speaker. Didn't the staff know how many people were expecting to eat??? The main reason I am rating this 4 stars is because at the finish line the race staff seemed to be very eager to tear down the finish line, and I had to cross the mat over to the side. My understanding was that the course was supposed to be open for at least 6 hours, which would be until noon. I crossed 10 minutes before but they put up street barricades and after I started to go through them, they directed me to a different mat over to the side (where my family was NOT waiting because they didn't know the staff had closed the main finish line) and then there wasn't anyone around to give me my medals! So my family had waited the whole day to see me finish and they had no idea where I was! We had to ask around for the medals and I know there were others that had to do the same. Also, the pre-race information didn't mention that the Columbia after-race food of rice, beans, and salad was only for those that could finish in 4 hours! We had some sandwiches and fruit offered to us, but I think they were actually for the volunteers. All in all, it was a great experience and I would recommend this marathon as long as you are a faster runner and can finish under 4.5 hours.

Great race - would only change a few things

This was my 2nd marathon and 1st since 2001. The course is flat and loops through the same area a few times so family/spectators can see runners, a great plus. The expo and access to the start were great - came from out of town and there are many hotels within walk distance of start, as well as the convention center for last-minute bathroom stops. I would suggest, as others have, that they minimize or separate the marathoners with half marathoners at miles 12-15 or so; it did make it hard to keep a rhythm as the half runners at that point are going much slower and some were walking in big groups. And I would also suggest making the early loops bigger (go to Ybor City?) or changing the course somewhat so that out-and-back in the 2nd half isn't quite as long, although that wasn't a big deal to me. The support was outstanding, there were carbo gels at more spots than advertised, and the volunteers were great. More spectators would be nice but the wind and much lower than normal temps were probably a factor. The wind was a factor in the faces of the runners in the last 6-8 miles, but that's an uncontrollable. The rice and beans were great at the end - it was too bad the wind was so bad it was hard to even stand around in the post-race area after the race. Pirate theme was cool; they should expand on that for next year. Like others that have posted, I think Tampa should continue putting on the marathon and half and push it harder in national publications. There is a lot of competition but this was a well-run race on a PR-type course in a great city to visit in February. We enjoyed the city and it all works well with the tradition of the 15K, which was run on Saturday. Thanks for putting on a great race.

A great race and the perfect winter getaway

I have traveled from Canada for the past three years to run this race. I competed in the three-race challenge (15K, 5K and Marathon) in 2006 and 2007. This is an excellent event for us hardcore racers. This year I used the 3:20 pace group in the marathon, and our leader, Joel, was awesome. He brought everyone across the line with 15 seconds to spare. This is a great event and I hope you will be able to continue into the future.

Lots of fun!

This was my first marathon, and I have to say this was a great experience. I was worried that I might not be able to follow the course, but that fear was put to rest by the hundreds of volunteers that made the race flow. I can see why Disney needs to have corrals, and Boston has two starts; the start pace was about an 11-minute mile, and it was so narrow over Davis Island that was a bit difficult. That and the jackets that I ditched were gone after the race. There was plenty of water and Gatorade (those pouches were awesome), but there were what, four bands? Was there an after event? I ended up going to the home show. Side note: my Nike 180's got a flat after the race.

Overall a very well organized and fun race!

This was my first marathon, so I have nothing to compare. The race was very scenic, the water stops were frequent, and the first aid and all staff were extremely supportive. I have heard rumors that this race may be discontinued. Please don't! The number of participants was perfect and I would like to run it every year. I am from Tampa and it is hard for me to travel away for races. Thanks for a wonderful race. I thought the weather was great too. It never got too hot!

Very easy packet pick-up

The marathon course was not the best. At times it was curvy and narrow especially around the track part of it. It did, however, open up after awhile, and it became easier to deal with. I do not understand the lack of participants. This has the potential be a great marathon. The post-run festivities were wonderful. GREAT SHOW!

Great Value

Excellent race course - scenic, organized out-and-back along the water. Expo: Well organized. Race: Perfect size, but not too big or too small. Logistics: Easy access; you could walk to both the start and finish from several hotels.

Fast Course, Great City for Feb. Marathon

There is a lot to like about this marathon. I like the 6:00 a.m. start; you get going while it is still dark out. The course is spectacular - flat and fast! The race starts with a loop around Davis Island, then you go through downtown Tampa and the back half is basically 7 miles each way along Bayshore Drive. I stayed at one of the hotels downtown, which the course passes twice. So my wife and daughter were able to see me start, walk to the hotel, take a shower, get coffee and see me run past the hotel in each direction and walk to Bayshore and see me finish. There are plenty of downtown hotels near the course, all reasonably priced. The weather was cold (40's) and windy, and it had rained through the night. This is atypical for Florida, so I had to wear long sleeves and gloves, but I enjoyed running in the cool for a change. I am sure that the wind did not help, but there is not much anyone can do about the weather. The crowd support was minimal, but I would not be out in that weather either so I understand. There were no issues with the clocks, tons of aid stations and a nice finish area. A few things I would suggest to make this event better: While I loved the course, it would have been great to separate the half marathon and marathon along Bayshore. There were a lot of walkers and often they would line up six across, making it difficult to pass. The street is big enough to separate the races. I always thought it was a nice touch when they call your name and city out as you approach the finish. This is not difficult in a small marathon, but very classy. I don't care about the shirt or medals you get at marathons and don't know why people bother commenting on them. Same with the expo - for me every expo is the same; you get your number and chip and browse around a bit. The city is a great place to spend a few days if you take the family. Lot's of good restaurants, Busch Gardens, aquarium, pirate ships, tons to do. Also, Orlando is only 1 1/2 hours away. For me this was a race that I won't forget since I qualified for Boston. Another perk is that you qualify for Boston for the current and next year. I read in the paper that they may not do the full marathon next year due to a competitive market in Florida. That would be a shame, as Tampa is one of the best cities in Florida and this race has a ton of potential.

My first time to run Tampa, and I will be back!! Everyone was upbeat, and the aid station volunteers were wonderful!! Lots of different terrain to run on, from pavement to cobblestones to bridges to a track. Kept my interest and mixed it up a bit. Thanks for a great race!!

Fast Course, Superb Logistics

I ran the 2007 B of A to qualify for Boston, which I accomplished. I wanted a fast course, small field and flawless logistics: registration, port-a-potties; on time start, reliable gear drop off, well-trained aid station volunteers, lots of aid stations. I got what I wanted. Since this is part of a big four-race weekend, there is a lot of effort to enact good planning and race-day logistics. The 908-person field was a good size. The combined half/full marathon start was not as crowded as I expected. The course is flat and fast. A lot of turns but not an impediment to a good time. The second half is more scenic than the first half. I would not call it super scenic, but adequate to relieve boredom. Having a 6 a.m. start does not get you a lot of fans, if that is important to you. This year, 2007, was quite windy, as a cold front passed through in the night before race start. I have run 50+ organized races and the runner support was as good at this race as any I have ever done. Plus, I got to hear a great talk by Dick Beardsley at the pre-race pasta dinner. Great food, too.

Very good race

This was my second marathon. My first was Cleveland. This was far better. The course was scenic the whole time. There were four gel stations and several areas where a prototype Gatorade product in plastic pouches was being distributed. There were not many spectators, but all volunteers at the aid stations were wonderful. The only negative comment I have is regarding the host hotel - the Hyatt. It was a disaster. When we arrived on Saturday at 4, they had no rooms ready. We had to ask them to clean our room on Sunday at 4. The concierge was wholly unhelpful and a real grouch. Get a better host hotel, and this could be Florida's premier marathon.

I love this marathon

Did I read somewhere in the comments that it's possible there will not be a 2008 race? Please don't discontinue the event; I love this race. I had a PR in 2006 - and I am trying to qualify for Boston and would like to try again at Tampa. After one Hops Marathon and two Bank of America Marathons, I could not make it for 2007, due to work obligtations. I ran the ING Miami Marathon instead in January, and greatly prefer the Tampa event over Miami.

Wonderful!

The weather could have been warmer and much less windy, but that is beyond the control of the race organizers. What they did control they did exceptionally well. This was my first race in Florida, and it was quite enjoyable. The low number of marathon runners is disappointing, since the race is very well run, the volunteers did a terrific job, and the course is nice, especially along the waterfront. I hope this marathon survives as it deserves to continue. I highly recommend this marathon, especially if you seek a flat, fast course.

First marathon, great experience

Having never run a marathon or attended one I don't have any basis for comparison, but I used this site when researching which marathon to run so I want to maybe help others as I have been helped. The marathon seemed very well organized to me. For first-timers (the only group I can relate to), I recommend running this one. The volunteers and fans were all friendly and encouraging. A special thanks to the lady around mile 18 who was handing out Creme Savers, and the lady around mile 21 who was handing out Jolly Ranchers. The only complaint I can think of is that the website said energy gel would be passed out at miles 17 and 21. I didn't see any being offered at mile 17 (maybe I just wasn't paying attention) and I could have used some.

Gets better every year...

This is my 6th running of this marathon and every year it gets better. This year was the best so far. Everything was very well organized with plenty of great volunteers. The race shirts were excellent this year!! I also loved the new course - running around the park around mile 19 was so fun. The new Gatorade pouches are the best. I'm hoping to see them at more future races!! I do agree that finishing on Bayshore can be brutal and seemingly long, but it's also the place where the most spectators are so that makes it fun. Post-race food was great - LOVED Columbia and also loved the coffee, since it was chilly out!! This race is a must for me every year. I'm so surprised it hasn't grown larger yet.

All in all, an amazing experience.

This is my first marathon, so I have nothing to compare it with. I felt the organization was great and there were PLENTY of aid stations. I did suffer a knee injury that slowed me from my predicted finish of 4:00 to 5:20. I mention this because at the finish, there were basically NO refreshments. My wife had to ask someone to get water out of a truck and the only thing was bananas, which I love, thank goodness. But that was it. Please, more food for the slowpokes. :)

Well Worth It

This was my second marathon and I loved it. Coming from out of town, it went very smoothly. Stayed at a hotel within walking distance of the start and didn't need a car. Good expo, and I even bought a pair of shoes. The organization was outstanding and the pace group helped a ton. Fast course. Beat my first marathon time by 23 minutes and qualified for Boston. The wind was strong, but since the course turned so much, it wasn't always in your face. A few turns were a bit too sharp, but overall I loved it. If someone is looking for a PR, this is for them. Not crowded, great timing and mile markings, and water stations were good too. Could use a few more fans, but can't complain. If I wanted cheering, I would run the NYC. I wanted to BQ, so this worked.

Great winter destination marathon

This was a great race. Beautiful course and great organization. I stayed at the Comfort Suite, which connects to the expo. We took the trolly everywhere. This race was so easy compared to bigger races such as Chicago that have you take a 45-minute bus ride to the expo from downtown. Also, the support on the course was great. The weather was windy, but I still ran 5 minutes faster than Chicago, which is known for its fast course. The course is very flat.

A top-notch race without the hassle.

This race is a no-brainer. Step up, go and enjoy. Organized, nice route, nice weather, great shirt and medal, and with all of the amenities of the big races - with none of the BS you get from the mega-marathons. It's not lonely out there, like in the really small races, and you're not stampeding like a herd of buffalo like at Chicago and NY either. The weather in Tampa is perfect at this time of the year. Yes, the last two races had a few gusts of wind, but it was nice and cool and the breeze just kept me nice and comfortable. Turned out to be a gorgeous day. Not sure what planet the whiners were running on; maybe they should stick to running on a treadmill. Overall, this race is a class act. I plan on running it every year until my legs drop off.

Great marathon in a great city!!!

This was my third marathon and second time running the Bank of America. I ran the Detroit Marathon in 2006, which itself is a great event. However, the Bank of American Marathon, while smaller in numbers, compares to or exceeds that event in every way. Everything - from registration, packet pick-up, the expo, performance long-sleeve t-shirt, medals and especially the great food from Columbia restaurant at the finish - makes this a world-class event!!! The changes to the course this year, which included a new start, a much improved route through Davis Island, and a lot fewer turns through downtown, worked very well and greatly improved the experience over 2006. I saw in the local paper that the race director is considering dropping the marathon for 2008 due to competition from other marathons in Florida (there were 3 others on 2/18). That would truly be a shame, because after 7 years of perfecting this one, they have definitely got it right! So, if you're looking for a flat, fast, very well-organized, runner-friendly, world-class marathon with top-notch amenities and enthusiastic volunteers in a great city, show your support to Susan Harmeling, the Gasparilla Distance Classic Association, and the city of Tampa by putting this one on your schedule for 2008!

This is the 6th time I've done this particular marathon and it seems like every year they try to make it better and they do! The race shirts were great this year! The new course is even better.... I loved running around the park near mile 18-19 and those new pouches of Gatorade were awesome!! The post-race food has also improved. Columbia was a big hit! Thanks to all the volunteers! You all did an excellent job as usual!

Good experience for a first-timer

I made my "maiden voyage" at the BOA/Gasparilla this year and was impressed with the race. The expo was nice, though I can only compare it to some large 10K's and 15K's that I've done. The weather was great, except for some strong winds, and the course was decent. Lots of aid stations and porta-lets along the way. I do agree with one previous comment about the marathon joining back in with the tail end of the half, as it is unmotivating to see a bunch of walkers all the sudden. But it's only for about 3 miles. Overall I was very happy with the organization and would recommend this race.

Nice city, scenic course, fast, well-organized

I am not sure why there aren't more people in this one? What's not to like? It has all the organizational support of a larger race without the hassles. Easy packet pick-up, decent expo, easy gear check (indoors and close enough to the start line to allow indoor warm-ups), short lines for pre-race port-a-johns, chip timing, pace teams, plenty of aid stations (water, Gatorade Endurance and Clif Shots on the course), finish line short walk from gear check, nice medals, etc. I stayed downtown near the race activities, so I didn't need a car. Plenty to do with trollies to Ybor City, walkways along the waterfront, restaurants and a grocery store nearby. It does start early (6 a.m.) and in the dark, which this year meant it was pretty chilly (unusual I hear). Once the sun comes up you've got clear views of a flat, fast course traversing neighborhoods and the bay front. Lots of wind off the bay and the roads are concrete, not asphalt, but otherwise no complaints from me. Given that this is part of a 4-event weekend (5K, 15K and half, too), I don't understand why it isn't a big-time destination race.... Ratings comments: Three stars for spectators because I know some runners want lots of vocal spectators on the course. There aren't many in Tampa but the ones who are out there are great (and so are the volunteers... and there are even a couple of bands on the course, too!).

boring course

As a personal rule, I don't care much for out-and-back courses, and the section of this race that is out-and-back comes at the worst time in the race. After running some loop parts of the course, you run out, mostly along the water, from approx. mile 12 to mile 19, then turn around and run the 7 miles back along the same route. The last 4.2 miles are brutal because you have no wind break and you can see the finish location the whole time. I would like to see some more variety to the course. The out/back and short loops near the Univ. of Tampa could have been done better. Tampa is a nice city; make some larger loops rather than the out-and-back on the same road, so we can see more. The neighborhoods along Bayshore have some lovely homes on parallel streets; no need to run out and back on Bayshore itself. I ran the half in 2005. I am just glad they did away with the little out-and-back at the airport on Davis Island. The 400-meter run on the track at Univ. of Tampa is a neat diversion in the middle of the race, but the entering/leaving the track was a bit tight and awkward. Great expo, with lots of appropriate vendors and goodies to be had. Finish-line food is plentiful and volunteers are great. Just enough spectators on the course to keep you going.

One that I hope remains in 2008

Despite having run 6 marathons, this is the first time that I've added to the comments. I only do so now after having read in the local paper about the possibility of not having this marathon held in 2008. In my opinion, this is a highly underrated marathon. The course is quite flat and fast. My point of comparison includes Chicago and Disney. The weather both last year as well as this (high wind) was less than ideal; however, this was out of the control of the organizers. The surroundings days were gorgeous. This is just the luck of the draw - something with which marathoners should be well-acquainted. I was able to squeeze out a PR and a BQ despite the adverse conditions. The organization was far better compared with last year when there was substantial delay in the start. This may have been partially due to a change in the location of the start. The change in the course was much improved over last year as well (i.e., the turn around on Davis Island). The food was the best, bar none, compared with the other races I've run. Fans were sparse at times (e.g., miles 18 to 21) but most enthusiastic!! The finisher medal was substantial compared with the half marathon. I would recommend this to individuals wanting a fast track. Though others occur in Florida around the same time, I think Tampa rocks!!!

Everything - I mean everything - was right in the marathon. Registration was flawless... the race went off without a hitch and the finish line was well organized. Lots of food after and the MEDALS were super. It was windy but they could not control that. Bring back the pace teams. I had so much fun.

Pretty Good, If you Ignored the Weather

I ran the marathon last February and thought that overall (despite the weather complications) it was a very good experience. I found the course to be very nice; however, I didn't like it when the marathon course merged into the back side of the half marathon course. If there was a way to separate the marathoners from those in the half, it would be beneficial for that two to three mile stretch on the way out to the turnaround. I finished in around 2:50 and found that runner traffic was very thick when I merged. From a race perspective I could no longer see the runner ahead of me and it was very difficult to pick my way through the crowd. If there was something that could be done to alleviate this congestion it would be nice. The expo was very good for a smaller marathon. I liked the technical shirt and agree with some other comments regarding the stitching being rather large. However I've found it to be very usable for running so it's all good. I had great difficulty finding the awards ceremony as I received conflicting directions about where they were being held. I would recommend this races for runners of all abilities. The course is pretty much dead flat and the set up allows family to see their runners three to four times on the course if they can move quickly enough. The shirt, medal and finisher's certificates are all nicely done. In this game we are always servant to the weather, so we adjust our goals and move on. I'm still not sure how much I like the lap of the track during the race. It is a beautiful, soft surface, but it just didn't feel right.

Once was enough.

Like others, the weather played into the overall negative experience, but the lack of contingency planning was the real problem. Waiting in the starting area for nearly 45 minutes without any information was frustrating. A single volunteer with a bullhorn could have solved the problem, but the effort simply was not there. The lack of mid-course mile markers made me question if I had taken a wrong turn and some aid stations were poorly manned. A couple streets were poorly maintained and should have been avoided. Thanks to the handful of diehards who cheered the runners on toward the end - you were appreciated. I will not be running this event in the future - there are too many well-run marathons in Florida to waste training time for this one.

I'd love to do it again

I enjoyed this marathon thoroughly and would love to return. The course was a little bit of a maze in the middle section going through downtown. Luckily it was well-marked so it worked out fine. The organization was challenged with a serious weather front that probably created a bunch of issues they weren't entirely prepared for. With the lightning, they seriously considered cancelling the race, but I'm glad they didn't as it had moved on by race time anyway. The race itself was thoroughly enjoyable. There were some stations that did not have enough Gatorade, which was a point of irritation for many of my fellow runners. On the other hand, there were so many aid stations that I was only stopping at every other one, so it didn't seem like a big issue since it only happened at a couple. I am always intrigued by the comments regarding spectators. I haven't run in a Chicago or New York or Boston... so I'm not sure what people expect. The folks that came out to watch were very supportive, but in the rain and the wind the course was certainly not lined with people. But it had way more people than any of the races I've run before (all of them smaller), and they were fun and, for me, energizing. The course is flat and fast - I wish I'd been in shape to try for a fast time. I'd like to come back and give it a go.

Try this one next year!!

Don't let any of the negative comments you might read about this marathon in 2006 deter you from trying it next year. The disorganization that some imagined was completely from a pretty strong weather band that rolled through early that morning. I drove through some terrible rain and yes, lightning, while on my way and was delayed because of it. I wouldn't have started on time if the race hadn't been delayed. I also heard the PA announcements so I was able to pass on the information to my fellow runners waiting towards the back. This is my third year participating in one race or another and it's starting to be a very enjoyable tradition. I ran the half this year. I love the course and the support is superb. It's big enough to feel like an event but small enough not to be too huge. The wind was really strong when I finished and a very nice volunteer practically forced a Mylar blanket on me saying that I would need it. I was so warm at the time that I hesitated but I was thanking her over and over in my mind as I was walking to my car in wet clothes and 30 mph wind gusts! Whoever you were, thank you!!!!!

mark this one on your calendar

This was my first Bank of America Marathon and I loved it! First off, the expo was terrific. The start of the race was a little hairy but the rest of the run was beautiful. The specatators were few in number but great in their support. Coming from the Northeast, the warm weather was incredible. THE COURSE WAS UNBELIEVABLE!! Running right next to the bay was BREATHTAKING. Water, Gatorade, and porta-lavs were plentiful. The medals and t-shirts are the best so far that I have gotten. Plus, if this was your "maiden voyage," you received a medal for that too!! WILL RUN THIS MARATHON AGAIN AND AGAIN!

Overall - A really nice marathon.

Overall, a very good race. Like the saying goes, "Everyone complains about the weather, but no one does anything about it." I found the expo to be great. I stopped by later on Saturday afternoon; it was very easy to get in and out of the place, and there was lots of room to browse around looking at the deals. My only disappointment was that they did not have the shirt size I requested. I had registered weeks in advance, and would hope with the entry fees that race management would have this covered. I was offered a different size, and that was about it. But I will say that the shirt itself was GREAT!! Super job on the shirt! A+++! As others stated, the race start was really confusing. We were all standing in the rain waiting for the race to start. If there was a PA system in use, I didn't hear it when actually in the corals. After the delay, which we didn't know the reason behind, all of the sudden people just started running and that is how the race started. It was strange. The course was nice and flat just like described. There was one time that you ran right next to the start/finish line, which I thought was kind of a tease when you had another 12-14 miles to go. Also, later in the race when the half marathoners and marathoners merged on the same course, I heard a lot of confusion by some of the halfers thinking they were not on the right course. A sign informing everyone of what is going on at this point would be great. The chip timing was off. There is no way I ran the time stated for the half marathon time. Around mile 18-19, they call out your name and where you are from. Post-race food was great!! Super job having Columbia Restaurant serving up some excellent stuff. Plenty of water and other stuff. Just GREAT!! Fans were sparse, but what do you expect with bad weather. The support on the course was great though, for the folks out there. Plenty of water stops to be found.

ok course, bad weather, fun time

First off... yes, the "half" times are wrong. This is because although it is listed as our half split, I'm pretty sure the mat was around the 10-mile mark. And as a 10-mile time, it makes a lot more sense... for me at least. I enjoyed this race and the previous day's 15K + 5K a lot more than when I did the Hops Marathon in 2003. The weather was awful this year, but that happens. The course is fairly scenic, although the out-and-back between 14 and 26 can be kind of boring. But at least it is next to the water - that's nice. Tons of aid stations. And lots of golf carts going back and forth ready to aid injured/tired runners. Actually, while I think that this was a cool thing to have, the golf carts got a bit annoying too. They kept zipping by me... sometimes coming up RIGHT behind me... and sometimes made big u-turns right in front of me. Kind of distracting. But I know why they were there, and it shows that the race was being extra considerate of runners in need. Not all races are like this. A fair number of porta-potties throughout the course. Food at the end was so-so, but it worked. Good medal and really nice shirt. Alas, the patch/stitchwork is so massive that I can't use the technical fiber shirt for running... but I do like it a lot. Staying at the host hotel or another downtown hotel was very convenient. There seemed to be bad traffic issues for both the Saturday and Sunday races. I'm glad I didn't have to worry about it.

This race was great, but the weather was horrible.

I really liked this race; it had great scenery and the crowd and fans were wonderful. The weather was okay for the first 20 miles, but when I turned the corner, the wind was horrible. It felt like I was running and not moving. I would definitely suggest that people run this marathon.

Not My Favorite

This was my fourth marathon and I must say I was very disappointed. I looked forward to this race for some time because I saw all the positive comments from previous years. The expo was fine and I was encouraged. Going into race morning I knew that the weather would be a challenge but I was still excited. The 30+-minute delay at the beginning of the race with little to no information was frustrating. The day is long enough without having to stand around in the drizzle for 45 minutes before the race. After the race started, I settled in and I do think the course has PR potential. The water stops were regular and well stocked, this part was very well done. The thing that really bothered me was that there was not a single mile marker between 11 and 14 on the marathon. No halfway point marker at all! The chip time for the half split was way off. Other mile markers were clearly misplaced and one clock was off by minutes. This boggles my mind. The weather was terrible so I can understand the little fan support, but there were maybe 200-300 people at the finish and the rain had at least stopped at that point. Very disappointing. Then the water and bananas after the race were at the top of an overpass. That is just adding insult to injury. Overall, I was very disappointed. I hope they read these boards and improve in the future.

half times are wrong

I feel like the half times were wrong. Did everyone run a 1/2 PR or were the times for the half split way off?

Good course - poor communication

This is a nice, flat course in my hometown of Tampa. Spectators are very sparse, but the cheerleaders were outstanding. Their enthusiasm was evident 4 hours into the race. I would run this again for that reason alone. The start was abysmal however. The race was scheduled to start at 6:00 a.m. I lined up at the start, with the other runners at 5:50, rarin' to go despite the light rain. However, the race did not start until just after 6:30. There were no announcements or any explanations as to why we had to stand in the rain for more than 30 minutes. The PA system either did not work, or it was aimed at the 20-30 spectators - the runners had no clue to what was going on (the next day's paper explained it was delayed due to lightning - which I did not see). As far as the post-race food - not a lot of variety, but the beans & rice from the Columbia Restaurant was excellent. Plenty of water/Gatorade stops and port-a-potties seemed to be just about right (local construction sites helped).

First Marathon Run

I've been running for 34 years now and have thought about running a marathon for several decades. Finally got serious about it and started a training program 5 1/2 months ago. Had a great time, felt strong throughout and very pleased having accomplished my goal. I thought the rain would be a deterrent but it was actually quite refreshing. Loved the course going through the streets of Davis Island and the out-and-back on Bayshore Blvd. for the last 12 miles. Thought the race was very well organized. Susan, the race director, was very prompt at emailing back with answers to a number of questions. Water and Gatorade stations were plentiful. Always felt well hydrated. Although the spectators were not in great numbers, they were super. Very enthusiastic even with the lack of sun and dry weather for the first hour or so. I'm a solo runner so didn't make much difference to me as I enjoy being on the run at my own pace. I highly recommend this marathon to runners of all abilities.

Real nice overlooked marathon...

This is number 12 for me; ran a 3:39:22 chip, in the 40 to 44 age group. I was really apprehensive about a Florida marathon in late Feb. (I hate high humidity), but this was very nicely run marathon. I don't understand why more folks don't include this one. There were approx. 1,100 marathoners. Big prizes for the masters runners. Great points: - The expo was wide open, lots of vendors. - The course is the flattest I've been on. - A lot of out-and-backs, but didn't seem like it at all. - Water & Gatorade started at 2 miles and seemed every 1/2 mile from that point on. - Port-o-lets every 1/2 mile. - Clif Shots in at lease five places. - Very friendly volunteers, well staffed. - Race marshals on golf carts to assist runners. The only reason I gave the organization a 4 was not knowing why the race was started 1/2 hour late. The race start was weak compared to others (low-grade P.A. system). Found out later lightning was the cause of the late start. The start was a bit congested, because the half starts with the full, but by mile 1 the runners were spread out enough to get to pace. Weather was OK: upper 50's to low 60's, overcast, with a light breeze. Then the front came through and the wind picked up enough to blow the mile-marker clocks off the stands. But hey, that's the weather. As for spectators, don't have them when I train, don't care during the race. I have more fun talking with fellow running nuts. As a whole, this is a fine race to hold pace and qualify for Boston. I never felt lost, confused, or neglected. The city is easy to navigate and the weather was reasonable. I would definitely recommend this for first-timers, and those trying to qualify for Boston.

Weather Didn't Cooperate, but a Great Race

A thunderstorm that delayed the start of the race by almost 40 minutes and a constant 15-20 mph headwind from miles 22-26.2 were negatives that the organizers could not control. The one negative that they could control was the communication to the racers regarding the delay. The sound system at the start was inaudible except for those right next to the speakers, so we were left to guess as to when the race was actually going to start. The course itself was great and the water stops/porta-potties were well spaced and plentiful. Spectators, other than the start and finish, were few and far between, but those that were out there were great. I would run this race again and recommend it to others.

Good race

This was a well-organized marathon. Not outstanding, but very good. The race management did a very good job dealing with some difficult weather on race morning. Forty-five minutes before the start, there was a torrential downpour over Tampa. The rain lightened up and made for a pleasant drizzle at the start. I am guessing because of the weather (?), they decided to delay the start 30 minutes right before the planned start time, so we were all standing around tightening up and expending our energy gels without even starting the race. I think they tried to announce and keep everyone informed, but the mass of the runners at the starting point could not hear the single P.A. system they were using. This was a mild annoyance. I do understand that they lost their on-course entertainment due to the weather. This was a bummer. I'm sure this would have helped keep us motivated. I did not PR this year. The headwinds were brutal in some spots along the water. Keep in mind the bay breezes can be quite vicious if you expect to run your fastest. Pros - Best marathon shirt I have ever received (out of six). It is a CoolMax type with a snazzy Tampa Marathon logo on the front. Thumbs up here!!! - Great volunteers and solid water coverage on the course. - Port-a-cans were in plentiful supply. - Course is FLAT. Nice views of the bay on the course in many places. - Very nice finisher's medal. Cons - Repetitive course - we seemed to cover a lot of the same roads on the 2nd half as we did on the 1st half. - "Suspect" mile markers - a couple were downright missing and a couple had to have been misplaced - most noticeably, no 1/2-point marker? My results confirm this was an error - I know I didn't run a 1:20 at the half. - Limited spectator support (keep in mind it was raining this year). Those that were there were outstanding. Cheerleaders were great. Overall, I am pleased with my race experience. I would recommend the race if you are happy with a medium size marathon. Tampa is nice place to visit. With good weather, I'm sure my marks would have been higher. But they need to get the mile markers right. This is one thing that is within the race director's control. We stayed over and visited Clearwater Beach, which is only 25 miles across the bay, to relax. Suggest doing this if you're not from the area.

Marathon was one of the safest races I've run

The organizers need a medal of their own. From the first aid stations every mile to the first aid helpers in the golf carts, to the back-up post-race awards party, to the race route committee, to the clean-up crews, and to the food and refreshment committee, I commend you all. You all did a super job, esp. considering the %$#@&* weather. Even though the weather was terrible (as well as my time), I'm sure this Tampa race will be on my list of future races to run again. A+ on the great shirts also, but D- on the choice of beer. Why Michelob Ultra keeps being a sponsor at road races is beyond me ($$$$$ I'm sure). But I was more thrilled about the food from Columbia's. Awesome! Keep them a sponsor whatever you do. One bit of constructive criticism: Move the bottled water, bagels, & fruit at the end of the marathon from the top of the bridge (the walk up the bridge was pretty hard believe it or not) to an area closer towards the finish line. If there was more of this near the finish line I missed it. Sorry. I hope the city will continue to support this event for years to come. Tampa is truly a beautiful city, worth coming to visit again for, esp. for a road race as wonderful as this one was!

Tampa Marathon Report Card

The Tampa Marathon Report Card: Course: D+ Yes, it was flat - but all of Tampa is flat. The course was a "figure eight" with a meandering knot through downtown Tampa wedged in between. There was too much turning and twisting, and too many arbitrary turn-arounds and hairpin curves to establish any sort of pacing. The loops around Hillsborough Bay were scenic, but were also exposed to the elements (strong wind and intermittent rain). Tampa has a number of charming neighborhoods like Ybor City, but the marathon doesn't take advantage of these vistas. Organization: C- Great volunteers. Thanks Tampa! Water and Gatorade the entire route. Energy gel at two locations during the race. No bananas. We saw a small plate of orange slices, but it was unclear if they were stocked by race organizers or enthusiastic fans. The starting line was poorly organized: no PA system, no clock, no lights, no DJ, no starting gun or adequate signage. The race start was delayed due to inclement weather (not the organizer's fault), but we had to rely on word-of-mouth to spread the message to our fellow runners. The finish line was well-staffed, but post-race food and bag recovery was spread out over a three-block area and was either exposed to the elements or wedged into an exhaust-filled tunnel. Crowds: C To be fair, the race was slated to start at 6:00 am to avoid the midday heat. It was dark, and it happened to be a rainy day. Personally, I wouldn't get out of bed on a Sunday morning to bear witness under those conditions unless a loved one was participating. But the crowds would be better if they routed the marathon through the neighborhoods where people commonly congregate. Expo: B+ Bib/chip pick-up was well marked and well-organized. Pasta dinner tickets should have been included in race packet. The chip check computer was down, with no back-up. The expo itself was clean, well-organized, ample, but not overpowering, and carpeted (thank you!). Weather: D- No one's fault, but it was warm, wet and windy. It wasn't a PR day. Overall: A It's always worth the effort when you cross that finish line and gather with friends to enjoy a cold "recovery" beer and conduct the post-marathon celebration.

Great Time at the 2006 BAM

This year, 2006, was my 1st time running of the Bank Of America Marathon in Tampa Bay, and despite the weather (rain, humidity, and gusty winds), I thoroughly enjoyed running this marathon. As for the weather, there is nothing that you can do about that except forcing yourself to go outside during training when the weather is not ideal - adding to your mental toughness. I would highly recommend this marathon to anyone. The post refreshments were good. The only minor complaint (and I really mean minor) about the marathon is the little fan support between the beginning and end of the race - however, those who did come out to support were great, and the cheering on was much appreciated. THANKS TAMPA FOR A VERY ENJOYABLE EVENT - I PLAN TO BE BACK NEXT YEAR.

Rainy yet good!

This is the 5th time I've run this particular marathon and I swear it gets better every year. This marathon brought rainy and very windy conditions but I still enjoyed the race. The course (which has changed several times) was great and there were plenty of aid stations. The food at the end of the race has improved very much, as now I was treated to a delicious Columbia restaurant meal in addition to the smoothies, Cokes and bread. I was impressed that even with the not-so-perfect conditions, the volunteers were out there in droves. Thanks to all that helped out.... You make the race possible!!

Not well organized

This was my 18th marathon. The start was not organized, total confusion, no direction where to line up. The post-race food also left a lot to be desired. The Tampa police officers were clueless; I asked several officers where the start line was for the marathon. They responded by saying, "I didn't know their was marathon today." I don`t know who put this marathon together, but they need to learn some organizational skills. I would not recommend this marathon to any runner.

One of the best

This was my second year to run this marathon and I plan to make it one of my regulars. A great course, lovely city and beautiful views. Not a whole lot of spectators, but the high school cheering groups are greatly appreciated. Go kids!! I was also glad the gal playing the violin near the small airport was back out again this year. She is fantastic! You can't go wrong running this marathon! Generally flat and fast.

Awesome Race! Top-Notch Organization!

This was my 5th marathon and the organization of the race is on par with the Chicago Marathon! I love the 6AM start to be done early. After poor winter training, I was still able to get in my 2nd best time. Even though it was a smaller race, I loved running with people throughout the race (half & full marathoners)! There were plenty of aid stations - almost too many! Thank you! I was impressed to see several toilets on the course. Alleys & sidestreets are the only toilets in Chicago... the Expo was great too! Food at the end of the race would be a nice feature... maybe next year, huh? Would love to run this race again and I plan to!! Great job!

mostly great course

This was my second Tampa Marathon. The weather was great, but the crowd support is light, which, as others have said, is likely due to the early start time and other events going on that weekend. The post-race food also left little to be desired, but hopefully that will improve next year. The course is great - flat and fast - but there are were a few places that bottlenecked out toward the airport and it was difficult to get around other runners. There were also a few hairpin turn-arounds that were a little difficult to maneuver when you've got a good pace going. It would be great to see some of those changes made in the course - but overall a beautiful run with the last 1/2 being right next to the water. Great aid stations (it seemed like there were so many of them!) and friendly people. I had a great time and was able to qualify for Boston. Would highly recommend this marathon and would run it again.

A Beautiful Winter Marathon

My 7th marathon and a very enjoyable one. I'd previously run the Gasparilla 15K several years, always returning for the beautiful course along Bayshore Blvd. The marathon incorporates this lovely out-and=back waterfront route with the best of what downtown Tampa has to offer: a tour of Davis Island and the downtown area. I've always tried to run nice courses, and this is near if not at the top of the list (Miami competes for top spot honors). The crowds are not large, but this is not NYC or Chicago. However, the supporters were on pretty much the whole course and very enthusiastic. The expo was larger than I'd expected; pretty much what you would hope to get. As for the after-course food, I suppose you could expect more in the way of bannanas and bagels. I could care less. The smoothies were great. I usually don't indulge too much in after race fare and go out for a well deserved big breakfast afterwards. The weather was ideal. Temps in the low 50s at the start and never got hot. This could very from year to year, but this date in early February should give one a good shot at decent weather. I wasn't in PR shape for this one, but I can see that its a great PR course. Flat except for a couple of transition bridges to and from Davis Island. I'll return to this one again for its beauty, its organization, and for a good weather run.

BIG ON ASPHALT!

This was my 2nd marathon. I did the Marine Corp in Oct. Compared to running for room on the road with 16,000 runners, this was fabulous!! I loved running in the dark, as I felt like I ran 2 races. The volunteers were great and I've never seen so many porto-lets. The Austin Powers fan rocked! We made it back in time for Super Bowl in Jacksonville - 5pm. But I admit I fell asleep after halftime—hey Jude, it's bed time. It was worth it!! I got a PR, I'll be back next year. Thanks Tampa!!!

What a great day

Many courses say fast and flat but these words definitely apply in Tampa. I ran a PR. I loved the early start in the dark. There were no sight problems which was one concern I had reading previous year comments. There are plenty of water stops with water cups and Gatorade cups easily distinguished so you know what you are getting. The course is well marked with clocks at all mile markers. It's great for viewing. I saw my family four times and they didn't have to walk more than a couple of blocks each time. The only disappointment was the post-race food, or lack thereof. After the race I couldn't find the beer tent. I know there was suppose to be one because I had a coupon on my race bib. Oh well, I just went to the Cheesecake Factory instead.

This was my fifth marathon and the first in February. It was great to run outdoors in shorts and a singlet. An excellent choice for snowbird marathoners!

I truly enjoyed this marathon and associated races (15K and 5K the preceding day) and will recommend it as an excellent warm-weather winter alternative to the Disney expensive mega-mess races in January. I'm really surprised these races aren't bigger than they are. Pluses: * Outstanding expo. As good as any in the country, including some of the biggest marathons. * Beautiful course with lots of water views. * Flat, flat, flat with the exception of a couple of manageable overpasses. * Super course support, particularly medical teams and frequent water stops. * Positive, happy crowd having lots of fun on the course. * Lots of race options - 15K, 5K, half, full, relays, triple challenges, something for everyone. * Good promotion of masters' racing by excellent prize money * 6AM start for marathon and half means cool temps for the race Negatives: * Runners are diverted to the sidewalk at 5:50 (NOT 6:00) and main finish line moved to sidewalk, even though roads are not opened for another 1:10 at least (!?!?). * If you're doing the triple race challenge (15K/5K/half or full), be sure you know how to find the 5K start - some missed it, you are in a huge crowd, and no one is directing triple challenge runners * Chip mats are taken up quickly - if you miss the start by a few minutes don't count on start mats being there. * 6AM start for marathon and half means little sleep! * Wind can get strong in places

Nice scenic course; a little bit windy and warm for the ideal run, but it was better than expected. People are great and very kind with warm supports as possible. Post-Race Was Very Disappointing

This was my 9th marathon and my 4th in Tampa. I did not care for miles 14 - 16, constantly running around the slower half-marathoners. I'm doing 7 m/m while they are doing 11 m/m, not a lot of fun at this point. All aid stations were well stocked and had plenty of great volunteers. The second aid station was much too dark, it created a bit of chaos trying to get around. Crowd support is always minimal because of the popular 15k and 5k from Saturday, and the early hours on Sunday. But the few were very supportive. I do like the course changes from 2004, but I would encourage the race committee to delete the brick-road portion near miles 19 and 21 and make this the turn-around point. My final comment is the post-race food - or the lack of it. I finished in the top 100, but found no bagels, muffins, Gatorade, and there were no bananas in sight... I had to ask. There were chips of some kind, and the Smoothies are always great. Overall the post-race was very disappointing... after running 26.2 you look forward to replenishing and revitalizing your body. It's a nice small race, and is still a work in progress. Hopefully, Bank of America, the new sponsors, will make it right.

Great Race...

There really isn't anything to complain about with this race. Excellent, flat course. Great temperatures (the sun wasn't up until about an hour and a half into the race), aid stations were perfectly located, a very nice pasta dinner and by far and away the best marathon shirts (the medals are great too). I only wish there were more spectators out there to help urge us on, but with a 6 am start, I wasn't expecting much. I highly recommend this race.

A great race!

This was my second marathon and I'd definitely do it again. There were enough participants that you were never alone, yet it wasn't too crowded. The course was flat and fun, with one exception: the out-and-back from 14 to 26. All I could think about were the runners on the other side of the road b/c they were that much closer to finishing! There was plenty of water and energy gels on the course, but I was disappointed in the food/refreshments at the end. All in all, a great race and fantastic weather. Thanks Tampa!

Outstanding

I can't say enough good things about this race. This was my first time running the Gasparilla and I loved it! The expo was much bigger/better than I expected, plenty of quality hotels at the start/finish area (would highly recommend the Marriott), more than enough port-o-potties at the start, plenty of lighting at the start and other dark areas (apparently fixing the main complaint from last year), BEAUTIFUL course, awesome aid stations and overall a blast. My husband planned to pace me the last half of the race and had no problem finding me on the course. Speaking of pacing... the course is FAST and definitely PR material (I managed to squeak out my second best time and qualify for Boston again). Overall it was a great experience and a top-notch race! PS. In addition to all of these things, about a month prior to the race I emailed the Gasparilla people to find out some info about the course and hotels near the start/finish. Not only did I get a timely response but the RACE DIRECTOR was the person who responded! She (I think it was a she) was so helpful and accommodating and wrote at least twice to make sure I got all the info I needed. I was totally impressed.

Another great marathon...

This is my 4th running of the Hops Marathon (Now the Bank of America Marathon). Each year, this race gets better and better. The expo is one of the best I've ever been to. The race shirts were great, medals were awesome, and the course was as beautiful as ever. This year, the course was changed and I enjoyed the change. I loved running through the downtown area where you see some of the cool buildings. Volunteers were great and I think the # of spectators is growing each year, which is nice. The temp was absolutely perfect, although a little windy. Looking forward to next year!

Perfect winter marathon

Great to be able to wear shorts in February! Starting in the dark was a bit disconcerting and I really had to focus on the road, but it was not a major impediment. The water stop people we just wonderful and very supportive. The police blocked every intersection and it was a totally blocked off course--safety is a big issue for me. The run along the shore was beautiful and soothing. I definitely would run this course again. The dry fit shirt and huge colorful medal were a definite plus. The expo was very big considering the size of the races. Next time, I'll try the challenge--run the 5k, 15k on Saturday and the 1/2 or full marathon on Sunday.

Clearly a first-class marathon.

This is my 12th marathon, and it was one of my most enjoyable, yet. The course was great, and the organization was even better. The views, the speakers at the pasta party and the well-organized event were all first-class. There was a headwind for the last six miles but I still PR'd and had a great time in Tampa. This race is highly recommended.

Excellent, Well Organized Race

If you are considering running this marathon, I highly recommend it!! After running 11 marathons in ten states, this is still one of my favorites. I ran the full in 2004 (as part of the PT Cruiser Challenge) and the two-person relay the only two years that it was offered, December 2000 and January 2003; they offered a half marathon in 2002 (as opposed to the relay, the marathon was not run in calendar year 2001 as they moved the date from December to January 2002). I will skip format for efficiency; following are the thing I liked: • 100% closed course, something I have learned to appreciate after running great marathon courses that run “partially” on busy highways (Maui & Mount Desert Island Maine... also good marathons worthy of consideration) • Beautiful scenic course that runs through numerous waterfront residential neighborhoods, Davis Island, Bayshore and historic Ybor City (not waterfront) • Course is 95% asphalt (I have run too many miles on concrete... lol) • Great support on the course, gels at numerous stops with plenty of enthusiastic friendly volunteers • Easy access to the start (starts downtown Tampa accessed from I-4, I-275 and the cross-town expressway) • Plenty of parking “close” to the start (numerous parking garages downtown) • Open finish area (hate being bunched up like cattle at the finish) • Great race amenities • If it is cold (which it can be; one never knows what the temp will be in Tampa the 1st week in February... anywhere from 32 to 92... lol) the convention center is open with plenty of mingle room (large clean bathrooms) • The expo is very nice and larger than is typical for a marathon of this size, as the marathon weekend is combined with the Gasparilla Distance Classic 15k & 5k runs the day before. Both Gasparilla runs have 4 to 7 thousand runners in “each”. • The race organizers do a great job. The marathon is put on by the Gasparilla Distance Classic Organization (organizing Gasparilla runs for over 25 consecutive years). Things I did not like... hmmmnnn... the unpredictable weather... Anyway, good running!!

One of the best marathons I ever ran!

The Hops Marathon was my very first marathon. Since I only ran 3-6 miles at most in my lifetime, the course was nice and flat with the most beautiful scenery of Tampa Bay. Also, the setup was great with all the water breaks, some food for energy, entertainment, encouragement and medical assistance if needed. I would love to do the Tampa Bay Hops Marathon again! I definitely give it 5 Stars!!!

Great race for a mid-packer

I ran this race to redeem myself after a disappointing NYC Marathon three months prior. It was perfect. I arrived in Tampa on Saturday morning (after a 5 day cruise!) and headed straight to the expo. It was well organized, not too big, but had some great booths and goodies. I stayed at the Hyatt, which was literally a 5 minute walk from the start. Having run two huge marathons (Chicago & NYC) and one smaller one (Long Beach), I was looking forward to a civilized race with a smaller field of runners. One of the best things about a smaller race like this, is no waiting (at the start, at the porta-potties--which were plentiful, at the water stops, etc.) Considering the early gun time, there were a number of spectators who had set up lawn chairs or boom boxes to encourage us as we ran in the dark (which was very cool, though I did crunch someone's glasses who must have lost them in the dangerous melee at the start). As the sun came up, the crowds grew and although not as deep as NYC or Chicago, they were plentiful enough and very supportive. As the race progressed, I was thankful for the 6 am start time, as it was really beginning to warm up around noon and there was little shade the last few miles. Having run my 3 prior marathons all within a few minutes of each other (4:36-4:40), I was thrilled with my new PR of 26 minutes (yep, I cut 1 minute/per mile) finishing in 4:10. As someone who does not enjoy running in a pack from start to finish, this race was simply perfect. I highly recommend it to other mid-packers who wish to avoid the big 35,000-plus fields.

Great race for a PR

This was a great race for a PR. This was my 5th marathon (a couple of small events and a couple of 'megathons'). Everything went off well, for the most part. I didn't get mixed up in the crash at the start that others have commented on, but I wasn't too thrilled with the very dark start either. The course was flat, as advertised, and I managed to knock 10 minutes off my PR and qualify for Boston. It was especially nice to have the convention center to warm up in prior to the race, as well as the clean restooms! Crowd support was very slim but the water breaks were plentiful, well stocked and full of enthusiastic volunteers. We live and train in North Fla. so we are pretty familiar with the Tampa area. We opted to stay out near Busch Gardens and got a well appointed suite for about half of what friends paid for a basic room downtown. The ride to the start posed no problems at 4:30 am on a Sunday morning and parking was ample and close. My wife ran the 1/2 and we even managed to run into each other out on the course. All in all, a well run event. Great course with lots of support from the volunteers. Crowds could be bigger, but with a 6 am start I guess that's to be expected.

Put this one on your to do list

I would give this one a 9 out of 10... not a perfect 10 due to no lighting at the start when a pile up could have been a disaster. A beautiful course... light crowd support, great volunteers. Expo was OK, pasta dinner was less than average... no seconds??? Good place for pasta is in Ybor City Spaghetti Warehouse. Medal better than average, shirt just OK... Overall a darn good marathon that I gladly would do again. Thank you to the organizers, support people and the small army of volunteers.

A very scenic course

I am in the process of trying to run all 50 states and represent the 'back-of-the-packers', and usually get a somewhat different view of the race from the frontrunners. First of all, it was very pleasant to start the race at 6am. I read others comments about tripping in the dark, etc. - but the race was just very peaceful, and you had the opportunity to watch the sun come up!!! I wish more races would do this. The course went through some fine neighborhoods, and also had a lot of scenic views of the water. The entertainment along the course was also very motivating, and the entertainers were very enthusiatic! Now, for the negatives. There was NO gel provided (maybe they ran out?) and the worst part was the fact that they decided to pick up the mile marker signs (beginning at mile 17!!!) somewhat early in the day. I finished in about 6:40 - admittedly slow - but I have never been in a race where they picked up the mile marker signs before everyone was finished! This race had an 'out-and-back' component to it, and lots of people I saw running behind me kept asking 'what mile is this?', as I ran past them. I also became lost at the 13 1/2 mile mark, where the 1/2 marathoners were milling about in the middle of the road after they completed their run, and we had to run by this, not really sure about where to go. The people done should be separated somehow from the people still running. The medal was great, the city is nice, but not a race for the slow guys like me, I guess.

What has hops got to do with it?

What has Hops got to do with this marathon? I got a coupon for a free pint of beer and at a Hops restaurant. That's all I know about hops. Coming from Southern California I really had no idea what hops is. Maybe everyone else in the US knows??? Really poor PR, folks. However, they do have me wearing a Hops Marathon tee shirt. I tried to buy a Tampa Tribune in Sarasota on Monday following the race. They apparently were another sponsor. Although Sarasota is just about an hour south of Tampa, the Tribune is not distributed there. Strange. The volunteers at the aid stations were fabulous... as were the cheerleaders, violin girl and Jimmy Buffett guy. The spectators, albeit in small numbers, were very enthusiastic. The course was fun, but once it was over... it was really over. No bands, parties, food... just that walk over the ramp and through the tunnel with some packaged cereal, a hunk of bread and some orange juice. It is truely incomprehensible, irresponsible and inexcusable that there was NO LIGHTING at the start of the race. At 6:00 AM it is as dark as it is at 2:00 AM. Someone must have figured that out before Sunday morning. There was a pile-up as the race started. Someone apparently tripped over the timing mat. I stepped on someone's wrist as I passed by. I couldnt even stop to apologize or to check to see if she was OK as that pack kept me moving. (Sorry about that whoever you are... I didn't see you laying there.) I couldnt believe how bush league that whole scene was. My advice to marathoners is to avoid the expo on Friday. It was a mad house with long lines (over a half hour) just to buy Clif Bars. All the Saturday runners go to the expo on Friday as I found out. I heard that the expo on Saturday was far more civilized. Great weather!

Great, beautiful, well-organized, flat and fast

What a great marathon! The course itself is beautiful, as much of it is along the water. Flat and fast! I ran it 23 minutes faster than New York City just 3 months ago. Very friendly volunteers. Twenty-one aid stations with Gatorade and spring water. Plenty of music along the way. Not many fans, but they are vocal. The 6 am start is smart... it's cool at that time of day. Was about 51 degrees at the start. Well organized. Registering at the expo center was a snap. The host hotel was only 3 or 4 blocks from the start and finish line which is very nice. Very friendly atmosphere. Spectator-friendly. I truly enjoyed the weekend!!

Great Race & Great Organization

Flat & fast course, outstanding race organization & a great location. What more could you want? This year's race was my 8th marathon and 3rd time running Hops. I also ran here in 2000 & 2001 but missed last year because of an injuy. Even though I am a local Tampa resident & some might say prejudiced, I have to say that this marathon is my favorite race. That's saying a lot since the other marathons I have run are New York, Chicago, Boston, Las Vegas & Casino-Niagara (Canada). These are also great races with good organizations putting them on, but the Gasparilla Distance Classic Crew that puts on the Hops Marathon by the Bay is the best by far. Fans along the course are sparse in some areas but those that do come out to watch are very supportive and vocal. I especially loved the cheerleading squads; the violinist playing solo in the pre-dawn darkness; the blues band in Ybor; and my friend Pat with her boom box playing Chariots of Fire. Water/aid stations were plentiful and I believe there were at least 6 opportunities where you could get a 'Cliff Shot.' Thank you Susan Harmeling (Race Director) and all of your fine volunteers. You have added the Hops 2004 Marathon by the Bay as another outstanding feather in your caps!

Great first marathon!

This was my first marathon, and it was a great experience. The course was fantastic with beautiful scenery (the all-flat course doesn't hurt either!). Weather was perfect. It was a well-oranized expo and event. The aid stations and voluteers were very helpful. While there were very few spectators, the ones that were out there were very supportive and enthusiastic. I will definitely make this an annual thing. Already looking forward to next year's race!!!

Don't run Disney... run this one!!

Great marathon for first-timers. Beautiful course, though have to admit I wasn't paying much attention to scenery the last 4 miles... The volunteers were awesome - always smiling and encouraging. Plenty of water and Gatorade stops. Spectators not in great abundance, but very vocal and supportive. Violin lady on Davis was very cool, Jimmy Buffet guy in industrial section cool too, cheerleaders on Bay Shore awesome... Great place for your family to watch you run. Several easily accessible points for viewing. Size of race was great as announcer was able to call my name as I crossed the finish... big rush to hear that. Thanks to Susan and staff.

Tampa Proof

I have nothing but praise for the Hops Marathon... the course was flat and fast and very scenic except for miles 9-12 running through industrial Tampa... the organization was awesome, water stops where abundant and pre-race and post-race activities were well directed, and the fans though few were enthusiastic and a great motivator. Music along the way gave the racers extra momentum and the overall atmosphere of the day made this virgin marathoner's first time something to remember. The 6 o'clock start was ideal and the weather provided optimum conditions for racers. The number of racers may have been small, but the camaraderie was overwhelming... a definite must-do for the first-timer!

I just wanted to add my congratulations to the people of Tampa for putting on a wonderful marathon! The course is well laid out (I particularly enjoyed the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the race leaders on several occasions) and flat. The race volunteers were extremely helpful and there was an abundance of water stops and aid stations. Super Race!

3rd times the charm!

This is my third running of the Hops Marathon and my 6th overall. It has definitely been the best marathon experience so far. I could not have asked for better weather and the spectators were great, although few. I enjoyed the loud cheerleaders along Bayshore and the violinist on Davis Island was so cool! I agree that running on Palm Avenue through Ybor is quite boring... why not run right through the heart of Ybor where we can view the city? I ran a PR Sunday and cannot wait 'til next year to do it all over again. To throw in a negative... the t-shirts could use some improvement. I'm getting tired of the same embroidery logo on the front of the shirt. Let's go large and different next year!

Great first marathon course

Liked the early start and loved that so many spectators were there to cheer us on as we rumbled through their neighborhoods. Plenty of hydration stations and great scenery. Only thing that bothered my was the turn-around point for that last 13.1 miles was so freaking buried in a residental section that you couldn't see it and didn't think you would ever get to it. Also, loved the cheerleaders, but the lady with the mic near the finish saying only 'half mile to go' needs to get her distances right.

This is a Diamond in the Rough

This was my 8th marathon, and could be one of my favorites. The race has everything except the crowds. The organization was great, drinks were always ready and plentiful, the temperature is perfect at least in my opinion. It's flat and beautiful. They give out enough supplies at the end to feed a small city. I would like to thank all of those people who make this event possible. It is clear there dedication to this event shows, great job. So again, no crowds, great medal, beautiful course, pleasant temps. Make this event a must.

Don't Miss This Race!

My 8th marathon, my first Hops. Despite living in Tampa, I didn't run the first three editions of this race, believing that an out-of-town marathon would hold more appeal. What a mistake. Because the the marathon is run the day after the Gasparilla 15k and 5k, which draw app. 15,000 runners, the race enjoys the expo, support and amenities of a much larger marathon. Yet, because the marathon draws less than 1/10th that number, on race day, one never gets the crowded 'Ellis Island refugee' feel I've experienced at 'big city' marathons. The course is tailor-made for a PR (I didn't, but then again I was running the PT Cruiser Challenge). I give high marks to the scenery, the enthusiasm of the crowd, and the volunteers. I'll take the race organization over that of any of the previous seven marathons I've run. Do this race!

Will do this one again!

Beautiful course and overall a very well run event. Enjoyed the bands along the way, and the violinist on Davis Island was great. Lacked some spectators compared to other races, but some of that could be due to the 6:00 am start. Plenty of well stocked water stations with enthusiastic volunteers (thanks to all of you), and the shower set-ups felt great as the day heated up. Pre-race expo was very well done. My only real problem was with the food available at the finish. I agree with an earlier poster who said that some local restaurant food would be a nice touch. Great shirt.

Beautiful January Climate

I just returned from running the Hops, my 4th marathon. On a positive note, I thought that the aid stations, support, and organization of the race was superb, plenty of potties, food, music, cheerleading squads. The weather was stunning. I feel that other potential future runners may be interested in what I thought were the drawbacks of this race. My biggest complaint was the surface--I contacted the race office twice before I planned my trip to see if there would be any concrete. They assured me it was all asphalt. While chatting in the opening miles, a local runner informed me that the last 10 miles was actually asphalt over concrete. Note to race staff: I know you want to recruit runners, but please be kind--concrete is hard on these granny legs! Also, the route through Ybor City was drab and industrial, whereas we went through the beautiful Davis Island estates in the dark. Maybe Ybor City would be better in the dark... Sports Authority had some nice T-shirts at the expo. Everyone has a different opinion, but I prefer shirts that have a big scenic picture on the front over the embroidery. So, aside from the concrete, Ybor, and the T-shirts, if you want to marathon in Florida, this race is well organized with great aid stations. PS--stay at the Marriott Waterside. Very nice.

Excellent Florida Marathon!

As a veteran marathoner, here are my random thoughts after running the 2004 race: Course: Perfect, this is probably the most beautiful Florida marathon course I've ever run. The cobblestone road that people are whining about is not really cobblestone... it's paved with bricks, which I thought added interest to the course. No problem whatsoever running over them. Overall the course is flat with just a few viaducts to run over. Weather: There were hydration stops galore along the route; even so, it was too warm this year and I cramped up bad over the last couple of miles. Nothing the race organizers can do about something like that though; it's Florida, we have to deal with it. Spectators: Awesome. No, the course isn't jam-packed with them, but then again I don't have spectators when I train either. I felt there was a steady amount of them along the course though. The volunteers, musicians and fans on the course were very vocal, offering the right shouts of encouragement. OUTSTANDING! I loved the girl on the violin, she was jamming! I am forever indebted to the race fans in Tampa, now it's time to applaud you! Small Tweaks for Improvement: Have the word 'finisher' on the medal so that others can see that you didn't get them in the race packet, you had to run the distance. Post the results right away, under a proper link. Flood light the starting line with halogens... there was a big pile-up because the timing mat got crinkled, but no one could see it in the blackness at 6 AM. Other than that, you've got a great race Tampa - don't shut it down! Put down the crack pipe and think about it... prize money might draw a faster elite field, but more festivities that encourage the whole family to participate (even the non-runners) is what will eventually give you what you're looking for en masse. Heck, the Miami Marathon is drawing a big crowd just because they have a large, unique spinning medal! You should be very proud of your marathon, though, and I would definitely consider running it again if the weather's colder.

Great overall experience except the pasta party

What an awesome marathon! Very well organized, great expo and friendly spectators and entertainment all along the course. There were MORE than enough water and aid stations and even 8 or 9 places to get an energy gel. Wonderful! Where the heck was NEWTS??? Badly placed on the map means that we never made it there. Shame. Also, the pasta party had no vegetarian marinara sauce. I'll definitely run the course again and make reservations at the HYATT's AVANZARE restaurant for their 'Create your own pasta' dinner.

Will definitely do this one again!

Loved this race. Crowd support was not always there, but when it was, the fans were great. Somebody actually had Chariots of Fire soundtrack on a loop on their boombox! Everybody cheered me, 'Jersey Girl', on. The volunteers at aid stations were terrific, loads of water ready and waiting, plenty of smiles and encouragement. Pretty neighborhoods, very friendly runners, organization was tight and cohesive. The weather was PERFECT, started out kind of dark, ok, REALLY dark, think moon and stars. But running in the dark with hundreds of others on the same quest, through quiet streets ... wow. Ethereal. Loved it. Will do this again, no doubt.

Excellent first marathon experience

I made a pilgrimage from -20-degree temperatures in Toronto... needless to say, training has been a bit buggered. And all things considered, my first marathon ended in a pretty good time. Great course, the scenery was beautiful, and more importantly, distracting... being 'able' to run 26 miles on a sunny day, on the water. Doesn't get better than that! Thanx to the fans, bands and the guy at mile 17 with the sign 'pain is temporary, pride lasts forever'... that took a bit of the burn away for sure. Kudos, Tampa!! One thing: promote the pre-race dinner more, ie. bring in speakers, running reps... those night-before events are a great bonding opportunity for runners.

More PR needs to be done - more food & excitement

1. Get vendors to donate items to encourage more people along the course, especially on Davis Island, to come out and cheer or play music. Ex: - Publix certificates for $5.00 to each participating household or movie passes or passes to the Aquarium. Encourage them to leave their Christmas lights outside a little longer and turn them on becuase running on Harbour Island was very dark. Have more bands. The violinist down by the Yacht Club was perfect. 2. More excitement at the finish - food, food, food. There is more food at my sprint triathlons than this marathon. You have the Harvest Bread Company, oranges, and juice. THAT'S IT??? Get HOPS out there or Outback. Whoever is doing your PR needs to kick it up several notches. Get Tampa Bay involved. Get the restaurants in Y'Bor involved. 3. Change the course to avoid running on the cobblestones down Balast Point. Take us out on Harbour Island. Take us down the central street in Y'Bor. Jazz up the course. 4. Your host hotel wanted the business but did very little to earn the title of 'Host'. No late check out, no food (not even real coffee - the stuff in the room does not count) in the a.m. Their handout said room service would be availabe at 5:00 a.m. but when I called for real coffee with real cream, I got a security guard at my door with cheap packets of coffee. No nothing. The front desk said they had something in the a.m. before Gasparilla but low attendance. Well, this is Sunday and a marathon. I really do not care what they did or did not do on Sat. Blending the two events has been a mistake from the start, but you are not willing to change. The only thing the Hyatt did was discount the room. I stayed at the Hyatt for the first time before this marathon because of its claim of being the host hotel. 5. I enjoy using a jacuzzi after the marathon. The YMCA even closed at noon. When I am done I would have to liked to hang out a bit but had to hurry back to the Hyatt to jump in the jacuzzi and hurry and check out. I met a lot of people from out of town that had no clue about the post-race party at Newk's. A marathon info booth in the Hyatt would be nice. This is the 3rd Hops marathon I have done and I don't see any improvement from last year when they made the fatal mistake of combining the two events. I am really feeling the crunch of a financial lack of planning and not getting the financial backing from supporters.

This was my first Hops Half, my only negative comment was the map for the course didn't match with where we went, it was confusing because the map showed us going into Ybor City and not onto Bayshore Blvd. Some of us almost turned around. Other than that the sunrise out on Davis Island was incredible and the course was well marked. I wish there could have been more spectators and bands along the way.

Great race keeps getting better

I'm a local so the route is old hat, but the change (from two years ago) to the 1/2 marathon course made the run much more enjoyable. Diverting onto Nuccio Parkway kind of made the 1/2 runners feel secondary to the main event, but channeling us right down Bayshore with the other runners kept the views picturesque, the spirits high and the camaraderie consistent. Hats off once again to the organizers for a top flight, perfectly choreographed event. Start was dead on time; finish line is gorgeously positioned and on-course support as always among the best around. One slam though: The 1/2 marathon shirt is easily the ugliest race shirt I've ever seen. The design looks like a child drew it... no imagination...no charm... it's one to pick up the doog poop with and then toss in the garbage.

Great Race!

I ran this marathon as part of the PT Cruiser Challenge last year (5K and 15K races Saturday, followed by the marathon on Sunday). All of the events were extremely well organized and very enjoyable. The marathon course is very flat and with the small number of participants it is an ideal place to set a PR. After running the two races Saturday, my marathon time was still only 2 minutes slower than my previous best. And for those who really only do these things to collect the 'goodies', the T-shirt is a long-sleeved coolmax and the medal is the coolest! If you do the PT Cruiser Challenge, you also get T-shirts for the 5K and 15K, and finisher's awards of a windbreaker shirt and a plaque mailed to you!

OH WHAT AN EXPERIENCE.

This was my first. Dedicated to Tommy Portera, a childhood friend lost to cancer. The people on this course were so helpful and supportive. I could not have finished without their suport. The course was great. One of the greatest things I have experienced in life.

BEST COURSE EVER

This was my second marathon and I had the best time ever, with the people within the race, the volunteers along the course. And the course was fantastic. The energy felt within the people was exciting enough to finish. I definitely will come back to do it.

I'VE Run all 3 And Will Go Back Again

My wife and I have run the marathon all 3 times. I find that since they moved it to January they fixed the only problem with the marathon (a little warm the first two years 80 and 70). I think it is not only a good 1st marathon (good organization and easy to find your way through to ease the stress) but it has good qualities for a later marathon (good course and organization that helps you reach your goal times ) My wife and I have run Disney, Marine Corp., Pittsburgh and Boston (Not to mention others). This marathon compares in organization and course to any we have run.

Excellent First Marathon

This was my first marathon, and it was a very enjoyable experience. There were plenty of water/Gatorade stops, several gel handouts after mile 17, and good community support. Attendance was hurt because of the change in date this year (from December to January), making it too close to the Disney marathon.

Great Race, Scenic, Flat

This was a very enjoyable race. Very flat and fast. Weather could not have been better. Would be nice to have other locations for packet pickup for those of us who do not live in Tampa. Directions to area were good but somewhat confusing on how to find Interstates after the race if you are not from the area. Plenty of water stations and spectators. Music along the route was great motivator.

This is a very well organized marathon, an excellent course with very good spectators and a great city to visit. It is an excellent runners weekend with the Gaspirilla 15K and 5K on Sat. and the marathon on Sun. Lots of fun !!!

One of the best!

I ran the Jacksonville Marathon the month before and I thought the Hops Marathon in Tampa Bay was much nicer in comparison. Refreshments every mile, clocks and porto-lets every 2 miles, friendly spectators, nice shirt (hint: get a size larger than you normally would), and a flat but scenic route. A thoroughly pleasant run that I have no reservations recommending to fellow runners. My only criticism is that it seemed difficult for people outside of the Tampa Bay area to register. Mail-in forms were difficult to come by, and they insisted on packet pickup at an Expo in Tampa on Saturday afternoon - very inconvenient for people coming from 75 miles or so away (the race was on Sunday morning). Also, the directions assumed familiarity with the local area. I think the race was geared principally to people in the Tampa/St. Pete area.

Flat, fast Boston Qualifier!

I had a great time, a great race and met my goal of qualifying for Boston. The weather was great and I didn't mind the early start at all. It would be nice to find an alternative to the cobblestone portion of the route. I think that as this race gains some popularity, there will be more people out on the course to cheer the competitors. Thank you to all involved with the organization of the race!

Once is enough

This was my 10th marathon. Just didnt take to this marathon. Expo was small, shirt was thin, didnt like running so long in the dark, too much doubling back, and the cobblestone must go. I train with gatorade and was thrilled to have it on the course. I've run Vegas and Columbus two times and would go a third time. Would not return to Tampa

What an awesome Marathon...

Running Hops, and then a week later doing Disney, NO doubt Hops was great! The water and fuel along the way, the bananas, the energy food, and fuel. The porta pots all along the way. I guess you could say I was spoiled, cause when I ran Disney, and they were out of bananas at the 13.1 mark, not a good thing at all. I kept saying this isn't like Hops.... Yes we may have done a little better with more fans, but it is a new Marathon. All I can say is Tampa spoiled us Marathoners... And if I am going to do Hops, or Disney, I will for sure do Hops, without a doubt....Thank you so much Tampa and Hops.... Awesome run, view, support......

A very nice event!

My first marathon this year (7 last year/18 to date). Finished in 4:51 (Chip)- no PR but I enjoyed it. Without a doubt, this is one of the better ones. I'd rate it behind Hawaii, on a par with SF, Ca.- Nashville, Tn.-OK. City-So. Bend, In. and better than many of the remaining events I ran. Very nice course and great organization, including a great Expo. Good support/friendly people (special thanks to the ladies in the gear retrieval room for their friendliness and spirit!). Of couse, the cool weather helped too. I recommend it highly- good luck in future events....and THANKS! Spikesboy LI, NY

Very nice race, well organized

The Hops Marathon was my 5th marathon, and the best experience I have ever had. It was very well organized, and the expo was nice. I would recommend this race for anyone not needing fans for support. The 6:00 a.m start is early, which is understandable why not many fans would make it out that early. The medals and long-sleeve t-shirts were better than most. The weather was perfect the entire day. The only 2 things I didn't care for was running on the bridges and the brick roads. Maybe some carpet or something over the these 2 spots would help. It wasn't that big of a deal though. Thank you Tampa for a great weekend, the volunteers did an awesome job. Even after I finished my run, I went back 4 hours later, and the volunteers were still there cheering on the remaining competitors. The 5K & the 15K were a great idea on Sat. One last thing, I liked how the runners ran past the finish line @ 8 miles and again @ 13.5. It made it nice for the fans to stay put and not have to walk around and still get to see their runners multiple times unlike many marathons. If you're wondering whether or not to run this race, stop wondering and register now for 2004! Keep up the good work Tampa. Go Bucs!!

Great organization, great course

After the inaugural run, I swore I wouldn't run this race ever again. It was poorly organized, poorly supported, and too hot. Decided to give my hometown marathon one more try and I'm glad I did. Boy did they do a complete turn around on this one! Moving the race to January and eliminating MacDill AFB from the course made a huge difference. Well manned water stations with enthusiastic volunteers. Spectators were sparse for most of the course especially in Ybor City but those that turned out were fantastic. Forget Disney and do this one instead. It's becoming a great race.

Superb Organization and Well Laid Out Course

If you are looking to set a PR, this is a course for you. A very flat, fast course, that is extremely well laid out for spectators. I ran the NYC Marathon last November in 3:43:46, and two months later ran this marathon in 3:16:11, with very little difference in training. At the start, spectators are within a 10 minute walk to see the runners again at the 8-mile point, the 1/2 marathon point and the finish line. The aid stations were every mile and well staffed, and the view of Tampa Bay was spectacular. The only negative was sparse crowd support - there was good support at the start and finish, but very little along most of the route. Although the ideal course conditions more than made up for it. Unless you really need large, cheering crowds, this is a must-run marathon in a fun city.

Flat, Beautiful Course

Perfect weather (40's - 50's although it was unseasonably cold) and a beautiful course. This is a great less-crowded Marathon & a good one for a PR. With only about 2000 runners, I had plenty of room to find my own pace from the beginning without too much weaving. The spectators were great...when there were spectators that is. Not nearly the support of the big ones (ie. Chicago) but they were there when it counted in the last 10K and people were very supportive. Volunteers were also fantastic. Thanks! Personally, I had an off day but one can easly reach a PR on this course. Nice and flat and lots of breathtaking water views. With a 6am start it was very dark in the beginning but a nice run. I stayed at the host Hotel & this kept me right in the middle of the action. An easy walk to and from the race & I got to watch friends run the 15K the day before. I look forward to seeing this one grow in size and organization. Small details could still be ironed out... 1. I didn't get a gear check tag. No big deal but could've been devastating for someone who really needed to check gear. 2. The chip verification should have had a big sign or something at the expo. There was just a lady sitting at a table with a computer & you'd never know what she was there for unless you asked. 3. The aid stations should always set up the same (in my opinion). Always Gatorade then H2O or visa versa but don't mix it up. Us marathoners need all the help we can get! The Post-race party was also well done with awards and some door prizes. If you're considering this one - go, it's a nice race.

Well organized, excellent volunteers and flat

Excellent organization, volunteer support along with the flat and very scenic bayfront and tourist area race route defines Hops. With 23 aid stations, a clock at every mile and well positioned and abundant port-a-potties along the route allowed for easy management of your run. Race conditions for 2003 were excellent upper 30's for the start and mid 50's around noon, clear and sunny. With the starting line outside the Tampa Convention Center, the availability of indoor restrooms and the warmth were convenient. Early sections of the course out by the airport were illuminated with portable flood lights before the sunrise, course supervision and traffic control were great. The racecourse was fan friendly which allowed easy support and viewing by spectators and family, who only had to go two blocks to see runners at the 8 and 13 mile mark and finish line. Volunteers were numerous and enthusiastic and Gatorade and water were abundant. The positioning of the Clifshot gel stations were placed strategically on the last half of the course just before an aid station with water. The finishers medal and shirt were good quality, with the shirt being a Cool-max long sleeve shirt with an embroidered Hops marathon logo. The move of Hops to a January event was a good decision for the race directors. This race is one to do again.

Tampa was great

About the 7th marathon I've been to and the 2nd time at Hops. This year was better organized than the first, but a lot less people since they moved it to January and Disney is only a week away from it. A lot less people cheering on the crowds too, but those that were there were really great. Beautiful course, great neighbourhoods, right along water.

Skip the mouse - This is your winter marathon!!

What a fun time! If you want a marathon with great support from the volunteers, a really cool looking medal, shirt and expo without the crowds then this marathon is for you. The course is flat and fast as advertised. The town needs to come out and support this race more. For those spectators that did, a big thank you!! You were great and made me feel like you were my own personal support crew. Did I mention the outstanding water stops? You couldn't have asked for better. This marathon beats the big city and crowd marathons IMHO. The only negative is that many of the downtown eateries and businesses are closed putting you at the mercy of the hotels unless you have a car or want to cab around.

This is a 'can't miss' marathon. The course is very flat and fast and the scenery is excellent, with much of the course along the water. There are 23 aid stations, all staffed with enthusiastic workers. The Expo was great! I'll be running this one again!

verizon medals were the worst ever!

Perhaps you shouldn't run a race for the medal and t-shirt but the 1/2 marathon medals and t-shirt provided by Verizon were the worst I've ever seen. The medal does not even say 1/2 marathon on it. They took great advantage of the opportunity to advertise their product and put forth minimal effort to applaud the effort of the runner. The full marathon medal by Hops was far superior. I did the Hops inaugural and enjoyed it. I will not do anything else presumably 'supported' by Verizon. I am amazed Verizon would approve such a design and more amazed that a medal designer would create this. Clearly, no 'runner' was consulted. If you consider this race for 2002, do the full marathon. At least you won't be ashamed to display your medal.

Organization and Volunteers Were Great

Water and Gatorade at every mile was great. The volunteers were wonderful and offered many kind words along the way. Food and drink at the end of this race was awesome. Crowd support and spectators were the only disappointing feature about this race. Without a doubt I will be running this race again next year.

GREAT SUPPORT

You can't ask for better support--plenty of porta potties, luid stations with gatorade and water every mile. I don't eat while I'm running because I'm afraid I'll get an upset stomach but I heard they had food galore along the course--they were handing out krispy creme donuts, chocolate chip cookies, muffins, oranges and there were several points giving out powergels even though the prerace info said there would only be one pewergel handoff. I ran the course two years now and it was warm both years. I have to disagree with the news article that said the temperatures this year caused worse times than the inaugural year. I found the weather to be a little bit mere comfortable than last year but still on the warm side. I definitely liked the course better this year--did not care much for running all the way down to MacDill Airforce base in the inaugural year. If you run this course plan for warm weather but maybe we will get lucky next year and get a cool front. About a week before the race they were calling for a cool front but it never came.

An Excellent first marathon (it was for me)

This was my first marathon. I did not have any expectations. I came out of the race with very high expectations for my next marathon. WOW. What a well organized race. What I loved: 1)the Course. Flat. Water/gatorade between every mile marker. Every time I looked up it was either water or the next mile marker. 2) The Crowds. Everywhere I looked there were poeple cheering us on. And the bands/radio stations within the course gave me strength to go on. The air force base needs help... No one cheering, boring and hot hot hot (mile 13-18). 3) The Location. Great. Easy access to Tampa and a lot of great hotels right around the start/finish. What I did not like: *The weather* HOT. Unusual for Fl. this time of year. I survived a little dehydrated... I am already registered for this marathon, again. I am looking for another that matches Tampa's greatness. Thanks for a wonderful 1st marathon. ILSWesley

i was a cop that worked the event

The Hops marathon was the culmination of a tremendous team effort by the sponsors and the event people. The Gasparilla folks, MacDill AFB, Tampa General Hospital, Tampa Fire Department, Tampa Parks and Recreation, and of course the Tampa Police Department busted their butts and it paid off. I know we used over 280 law enforcement personnel to virtually shut down the city and ensure a safe and enjoyable route for the runners and volunteers. Logistically it was crazy, but in the end, I was proud to be a part of the inaugural event. Can't wait until next year. Sgt. John newman, Tampa Police Department

Great event, well organized, spectator friendly

This was my eighth marathon and my third innaugural marathon. This race was extremely well organized, from the pasta dinner at the Florida acquarium to the fan shuttle to take spectators out to different spots on the course. The course is flat but lonely on the Air Force Base. It is great in the last six miles as you run along the bay. There was plenty of water and gatorade which was needed for the very hot weather. I will never forget coming into the finish and seein Khalid cheering for all of the runners!!!

Impressively organized

I thought this was a very well-organized race and was impressed with the amazing traffic control. There were no cars on the course, which was astonishing considering how big Tampa is. It got hot pretty quickly, and the race directors wasted no time putting sprayers at all the aid stations. There was plenty of gatorade and water at every mile starting with mile 2. The finish line snacks were great - frozen yogurt, coke, etc. The medal was very nice and so were the long-sleeve T-shirts. My only complaint was the heat. Maybe they could move it up to the end of December.

A hot humid day for all

It was a great race, the course does not offer much shade - however the water stations at each mile made it easier for all of us. At the finish line there was confusion as to where the family reunion and massage area were, it was not clearly indicated.

Well-Run and -Supported; Flat but Warm

Organizers' skills, learned running Gasparilla events, showed. Expo, volunteer amounts and placement, course marking/clocking, food, etc. all that of a top-flight marathon. Some of course on concrete, 1 mile through yucky warehouse area, and barren 5-mile stretch through air base. Majority of course in sun; thank goodness for early start and stretch (appx. miles 12-15 and 19-22) through shaded neighborhood. Excellent finish-line treats. Post-race party with Hops Restaurant drink + food which I did not attend. Aid stations and clocks every mile. Medium-sized expo with good speakers/seminars. Appx. 120 2-person relay teams share course. Appears this'll be a good big-city option.

A warm December day...

I was hoping to have a chance to run in the warm Florida weather, but this was more than I had asked for. An early start to beat the heat had everyone out in the dark. Once the sun began to climb, the temperatures soon followed and I knew my goal was not to be had today. I decided to enjoy my surroundings and the race soon became one of my favorites. Well run with good support for the runners. I will try to make it back again next year.
