Fast and flat!

Food was amazing, atmosphere was awesome. The weather was awful but you can't control that!

Organized, small, beautiful city with lots of wate

Organized, fun theme, food, food and more food. Expo was small, but having Dick Beardsley speaker was a treat, plus they served dinner. First time I've cried at an expo. Course was fairly flat 2 loops with incredible water & wildlife views. White pelicans studded the water. The weather was awful with rain & wind. Colorful medal. Organized, with shuttles. I stayed at embassy suites, a very short walk to expo & shuttles, plus free airport shuttle & complementary happy hour & breakfast, 2pm checkout. In spite of weather, I really enjoyed this race. Food was great, socks adorable with chicken theme & free heavy throw away gloves which I couldn't part with. Shirt was basic, but nice name brand tech...just ill-fitted for me. Aid stations 1.5 miles or so, some with candy, but no gel. My only complaint was I ran 4:50 & the finish arch was gone. By 5 hours it was deserted and many were still on the course. Hats off to RD and Spectacular volunteers who endured the rain.

Rough

Everything had closed down for the 5:30 finisher. All but two of the aid stations in the second half were unmanned (BIG thank you for the two that stayed), and there was one sole tent at the finish with cold food (although it did have food). The entire ENTIRE course was lake, cypress and waterfowl. At first it was charming, then it felt like Groundhog Day- a real pretty Groundhog Day, but Groundhog Day. And it rained. Hard. For 15 miles. This would be a great race for some, but not me.

Super fun small-town marathon

A great marathon for those who don't need a lot of spectator support. It's a fast, flat, beautiful 13.1 mile course that is run twice for marathoners, with virtually no spectators, save for the water-stop volunteers. And on the second loop, even most of the water stop volunteers had gone home (but there was plenty of plastic cups waiting for thirsty runners on the tables.) Even still, the race has a special charm, and it's a lovely course.

Seriously? No. Seriously the BEST small marathon.

158 marathon finishers and Bart Yasso comes to speak, runs the race and stays to congratulate the finishers till the very bitter end. What? Seriously WHAT? What else could I say? Food was good. People were exceptional. Great shirt and medal. Whatever. PAY ATTENTION. This is a marathon put on by marathoners for marathoners. I'm really, really sad that I didn't wait to make this my 50th marathon. Seriously a good marathon.

Small Marathon, Flat Course

I did this marathon in 2015. The course is just about as flat as can be, with the exception of a bridge going over the railroad tracks. It is a loop course. If you are doing the half marathon, you do one loop around University Lake. If you are like me and are doing the full marathon, you do two loops. All the water stops are manned the fist time around the loop. On the second loop, they may be manned, or they may have cups sitting out for you to grab. There were not many spectators on the course at all. I wish the community would get behind this race. The organization for the marathon is great. Getting your packet was easy. Bart Yasso spoke at the pre-race supper. They provided transportation from the hotel to the course, and back again. The food provided afterwards was excellent: fish, chicken, jalapeno poppers, gumbo, alligator, and more. (Somewhere there were pralines, but I did not find out about them until afterwards.) There is plenty of water, poweraide, cokes, and beer for both the pre-race supper and afterwards.

Great race.

I picked this race because of the time of year, was in a state I hadn't run in, and the comments on here were all pretty positive. I will say I will agree with most everyone on here - this was a fantastic race and I'm glad I did it. Weather - Obviously, you can't control the weather, but on this day it was near perfect. Started out in the low 40s and was near 50 when we finished. A little warmer at the end than I would want, but again can't control it. Course - One of the nicer courses I've run on. I know some people don't like the double loop, but if you don't mind it then this course is really great. You run through the LSU campus, through some really pretty neighborhoods that are shaded by big, live oak trees, and around a lake. I would consider it to be pretty flat, I can only remember 2 or 3 'hills' throughout the whole course. Spectators - Minimal at best. This isn't a negative comment, just a fact. This is a small race so there were few spectators out (other than at the aid stations), especially on the second loop. Swag - Smaller medal than most races, but still very nice. The shirt was a nice tech shirt. The additional running socks were a nice touch. Post-Race - Small, fun after-party with Louisiana style food-jambalaya, sausage, alligator, fried chicken, french fries. It was unique, but delicious. There are few marathons that I've done and would go back to run again, but I'm pretty sure I would go back and run this one. If the weather cooperates, I definitely think this is a great PR race.

Best Post Race Food Ever!

I didn't know much about this race , but I entered it because I needed Louisiana and it fit my schedule. The website wasn't too impressive so I really wasn't expecting much. How wrong I was! This race was very well done. It was well organized, friendly, and the food...oh, the food. Jambalaya, fish, alligator sauce piquant....and beer! Almost as good as the food was being able to meet and talk to the people who were cooking it. It was very evident that were proud of their craft and very eager to share it....even with a Yankee like me. The course was not bad, but not terribly exciting either. Mostly flat with a few very minor rolling hills. All in all, I highly recommend this race. Kudos to the organizers for putting on a great event.

Decent Smaller Race

I chose the Baton Rouge Beach Marathon as it fit well into my schedule and is only a 4 hour drive from Houston. Overall it's a decent race. Let's start with the good. The race director is clearly well connected in the running community. He drew some big name speakers (Katherine Siwtzer) that some major marathons would be jealous to get. This race definitely appeals to the marathon maniac and 50 stater crowd, as I saw large representation from those groups as well. Good expo for a small race. Most races this size don't even bother with an expo, the fact that this one has one was pretty neat. Race is very well organized. Quick and easy packet pick-up at the host hotel. Shuttle service to the start-line from the hotel was quick and efficient. As I got out of the lobby one bus pulled away and another was there 5 mins later. Plenty of porta pottys at the start area, short line. Finish was nice, tons of food (good fresh cooked food)! Course is average, nothing special. It runs through LSU campus and some nice residential neighboorhoods. One dig is that it is an open course, so there is active traffic. While they do have crossing guards at most major intersections, there are some times where you are dealing with live traffic. Fortunately, most of the course is on quiet back streets, so it is not a major issue. It is fairly flat as advertised, only a few minor inclines to deal with. Some water stops were sparse on staffing, some good. Spectators were almost non-existent. Other good stuff - nice shirt, actually a branded (New Balance) tech tee which is rare in a small race. Medal is OK. Good swag bag with a nice pair of custom socks. Weather - I don't gripe about weather, because you can't control it, so I'm writing this as a caution to people who travel to the south for winter races. This year was warm and muggy (66 at the start). Last year was cold (30s). This is gulf coast weather, you need to be preparred for it...it can vary dramitically during the winter months. This year's weather had a clear impact on finishing times. Last comment is more in general around these small races. All three of my marathons this winter have been at small races (which include half marathons). The half has become so popular that what you are quickly seeing is these races have become half marathons with some people choosing a full option. This race had over 500 half finishers and only about 150 full finishers...do with this comment what you want, this is just a general observation on the state of our sport.

Nice small race in Baton Rouge

I ran BRB Marathon to knock Louisiana off my list of states in quest of 50. As a slower runner, (5 hour average) I am always worried about getting lost towards end of course. I contacted RD before registering about my concern. He was very friendly and assured me I would not get lost. I am thankful that I did not, but on the many turns, a few people did make a wrong turn around mile 24. Their 26.2 was closer to 29. The pouring rain and many leaves covering arrows made it somewhat hard to see. The open course was ok for most of the course except the black Corvette with 'GIT' plates who almost took out a few runners. Expo was amazing! Great speakers and nonstop food. Friendly city from car rentals at airport to hotel desk staff. I would recommend this race to friends for a half marathon for sure. If doing the full, be prepared to spend much time alone on course and studying the arrows. Spectator support is non existent. But the course takes you through awesome homes which makes it fun. Thanks for a fun day!

Great Hospitality!

Hospitality done right! Everyone was so helpful and friendly. Had a great time at the expo, free food was a plus, for my entry got a shirt (which they are sending me a smaller size, I ordered too big), gloves, socks and beer coozi (Awesome!). Pre-race had lots of portapotties with quick lines. Race course was good. Sparse with spectators, it was cold, but volunteers were great. I would do this again and hope for slightly warmer weather to better enjoy all the post race fun! Thanks to Craig and all the volunteers for a great race.

Good Local Half-Marathon

Organization was top-knotch. Small expo with big name speaker and FOOD: Jambalaya, Gumbo, Pizza and Beer to name a few! Good food was repeated at the finish as well! The course is predominantly around a lake and the LSU campus. It's where locals run. The course is pleasant, but a little boring and lonely on the second loop. Very little crowd support, likely because it was cold this year. The first few kilometers were a little too crowded, but thinned out nicely by about 5k. Hillier than expected (some modest inclines; I was expecting none) but a very flat and fast course. The Medal could use some work, but all in all, a very nice experience.

Great small marathon

A race that is super friendly. Great food at packet pickup and after the run. One of the most friendly race staff and race director. Accommodating to even slower runners with an early start if needed. I always look forward to a new pair of running chicken socks! There is never a large number of spectators, but that is fine. Beautiful course although there are a few dangerous places - the course is open to traffic - but volunteers or police are on hand. Be sure to check the weather reports as you never know what to expect this time of year! All in all a great event.

It was cold, but good

39 degrees, so no one overheated. Race was extremely well organized, plenty of water and power aid at every water stop. Food both for the post-race and post-packet pickup was better than expected.

Fab food!

Absolutely stellar organization, volunteers and police support. The double loop course is always a bit tough, but most of the course is beautiful. I could have doe without the overpass: a bit treacherous as road is not closed. As most folks do the half, the second loop is a bit lonesome, but water stops are frequent. The prerace dinner is included and is great. The postrace food is spectacular (and plentiful).

GREAT ORGANIZATION!!!...

I thought this was a very well ran race. Packet pickup and swag bags were great. Meals were great. Spectators were great for a small race. The course was very scenic, and not very hilly. However, the distance was in question by my GPS. My GPS had 26.3 miles at 100 yds past the 25 mile mark on the course. I talked to 4 other runners who had roughly the same GPS readings. I was told that this was do to zig zagging across the roads going through the neighborhood areas. I understand that there will be some variation on the mileage but 1.2 miles is alot of extra lol. However other than this Baton Rouge area was nice and race is very well organized.

Great small race

This is a great small marathon. I course was beautiful, flat and shaded. The organization was great and the volunteers were friendly. They also had the BEST post race food I've ever had. I'd recommend this marathon for anyone that wants a stress free race day. The only downside is after the first loop, most runners finish the half. I found my self looking for the arrows on the road to make sure I was going the right direction. Thankfully the course was very well marked and the traffic control was great. Overall, one of the nicest races I've run.

Great organization...

This was my 4th marathon 1st BRBM... I thought the course was very scenic. A little more hilly than expected but not bad at all just not as super flat as I expected... Weether was perfect to start but got hot at the end for me. My biggest complaint was the difference in the race distance and my GPS. I was pacing myself using map my run app and was staying on my pace so I thought. I noticed that the mileage started growing a greater distance between My GPS and the marked distance on the course. My GPS had me at 26.3 miles 100 yards past the 25 mile sign on the course. I talked to 4 other runners that had similar reading. I was told it was due to the zig zagging thru the neighborhood. I understand this but 1.2 miles of zig zag is alot to explain. But other than that I thought race was nice.

2nd 1/2M, Fabulous Experience

The dilemma is: how do I honestly tell how tremendous this run was without bashing open the floodgates and swelling the number of runners for next year? The BRBM 2012 was crazy fun, high energy, beautiful track and gracious residents. Even the pelicans flying overhead kept us company! The volunteers were so supportive and the food (naturally, it's Louisiana!) sublime. The catfish was outrageous. The organizers have this race and all aspects of it down pat. I can't wait for 2013.

Small Marathon with a personal touch

This was my 7th marathon (and 7th state). Overall, I would definitely recommend this race for 50 Staters who need LA. Positives: *Super organization. Buses were frequent and convenient from the host hotel to/from the start/finish line *Expo. The race director's family made Gumbo & Jumbalaya for everyone to enjoy for dinner at the expo. There was also free beer/soft drinks available both at the expo & post-race party, which included more home-made food. *Pretty course that ran along numerous lakes near LSUs campus. Traffic was well organized that I never felt like I was going to be hit by a car. *Volunteers were really friendly and supportive throughout the race Cons: *Supporters are scarce. Most people in Baton Rouge didn't even seem to know there was going to be a marathon and the lack of spectators was discouraging *Weather. Tough to complain about something uncontrollable but 71 degrees for 26.2 miles isn't fun...

This is an excellent race with a flat and scenic course (around the LSU lakes) and one of the best post race meals ever (jambalaya, fried fish, alligator, French fries, beer). I'll be back next year!

THIS is how you organize a race!

The organizers do an amazing job with this marathon: registration, pick up, shuttle buses, and after party are all a breeze. I have run I think 9 marathons, and this race was by far the best as far as organization and FUN goes! The swag is amazing (duffle bag, socks, gloves, tech T, samples), the food is fantastic and varied (and free dinner the night before - who knew races even offered such a thing?!), the course is beautiful, the volunteers are friendly - I am so impressed. This is the ONLY race I've run with adequate port-a-potties, and the logistics of shuttles to the start was handles far better than at large RnR races. The awards ceremony is held close to the finish, so those of us traveling (flying or, like me, driving home in time for the game, hehe!) could get moving quickly. Altogether brilliant. You can't go wrong with this gem. I'm adding it to my yearly rotation for sure!

Very Fun Event!

I loved the atmosphere of the event surrounding the running chicken theme including the prominent running chicken on the medal. I did not mind the 2 loop course because most of it was scenic enough to see twice. Essentially flat except for one brief hill around mile 10 but you make up for it on the downhill side. Both the steep up and down seemed to only last about a 1/4 of a mile. Other than that most the course seemed flat with mild inclines and declines in places. I got a PR and finally did a sub-4 hour. The weather was fantastic for Dec. Varied between 63 and 73 during the race (I think). No abandoned water stops this year as I've seen in previous year posts. I heard from others about the dancing chicken but I missed him for some reason. My favorite moment was near the finish line when my daughter yelled 'Run you crazy chicken!' as I passed her and also saw I was about to PR on the clock. My family had fun, I had a blast. I definitely recommend this one. Excellent swag. Marathon medal is slightly bigger than the half medal.

Fantastic Race!

Can not say enough wonderful things about this race. This was the smallest race I have ever ran, BUT it has been by far one of the BEST! LOVED this race. The packet pick-up was very easy and quick. LOVED all the swag we received: NICE duffle bag, socks, gloves, tech shirt. Plus, FREE food, sodas, water, beer at the EXPO! Probably some of the friendliest folks at a race! The race was a loop course which can be tough mentally. You do have to watch the arrows spray painted on the road to know which way to go because once the halfers finish, the runners are far and few. HOWEVER, in the second half is when I was really able to meet other runners and LOVED it! Met so many Marathon Maniacs and 50 staters! Great folks who were all really supportive and cheered one another on. Can not say enough about the Finish line area! FOOD, FOOD, FOOD and I was near the end of the race! Free food, sodas, water, powerade, beer. UNREAL! Never knew I liked Diet Coke so much until after this race! I have always been served water or sports drinks post races and let me tell ya, after running 26.2 miles, that's the last thing I want to drink! THANK YOU FOR THE FANTASTIC POST RACE FOOD AND DRINK! This was my 10th marathon, qualified me for Maniacs, and after I finish the 50 states... I WILL RETURN TO THIS RACE! Just hope it is still small by that time. :) Thanks, Baton Rouge for a wonderful event!

Low Stress - Runners Race

This is a no stress small marathon that is great if you're looking for some relief from the mega marathons. The Marriott host hotel was great and very accommodating. Great job on their part. The packet pick-up was a little disorganized. The food was late so we ended up eating at a restaurant. The shirt size I ordered wasn't there either. I was at the packet pickup when it opened so it's not like others got there before me. They just hadn't ordered or received them. We did receive a small gym bag with throw away gloves and socks with our packet. The race is a double loop so you pass the start/finish once and you see it from the other side of the lake twice before actually finishing. Course is not flat but not difficult. Traffic control was good at major intersections but non-existant at secondary ones and we encountered some grouchy drivers. On the second loop you're forced at one point to hop on a narrow sidewalk and climb a steep overpass making it virtually impossible to pass because there's traffic. Water stops were well stocked and manned except on the second loop when they're abandoned and become self serving which is OK. There aren't that many marathoners doing this race. Spectator rating is low because few people come out of their homes on race day. The race runs partly on the LSU campus and it was a ghost town during the race. I guess everybody had left town to go to the game in Georgia. The race hits all the needed marks just some small technical gaffs that would be easily corrected. Excellent transportation to and from the race as parking is very limited. Would definitely recommend if you want to avoid New Orleans and get this race in for your 50 states.

Fun, Friendly Race! Perfect for Foodies Too!

Ran NYCM 4 weeks before and was looking for a bit different experience and sure got it in Baton Rouge. It was a no-hassle, friendly and intimate race. Very popular amoungst the 50 staters and Maniacs. Packet Pickup is right in the lobby of the host hotel which took less than a minute. Got great swag of an awesome travel/duffel bag, short sleeve tech shirt, gloves and a pair of running socks with the chickens on them!!! The feed (free) at packet pickup was delicious jambalaya and pizza. Your choice of water, beer or soda. Delicious!!! The race consists of 2 13.1 mile loops around the LSU campus and lake. It's not as boring as it sounds and many parts were actually quite enjoyable. Some of the pavement is in disrepair so it's critical that you watch your footing. After the first loop, I was worried that I might get lost on the course but the excellent markings as well as perfectly positioned police and volunteer traffic directors made it really easy to make your way around the course. A lot of the course is pretty hard pavement (asphalt with crushed rocks) in many places. This is definitely not a race for someone who has to run with an iPod as you really need to be very aware at all times, especially during the second loop as many parts of the course are not closed to traffic and you will be running on shoulders or making turns onto traffic. The course itself is fast with only one hill that I noticed. After reading previous years reviews, I was nervous about water stations being abandoned during the second loop. That never happened. All the water stops had wonderful volunteers giving out either water or Powerade. One stop also had the dancing chicken! The water station people were the best spectators! Finishing the race was a thrill but the post race feed was even better!!! They were cooking huge vats of jambalaya, alligator tail as well as other Southern specialties. Coolers full of soda, beer, water, powerade. With a free prerace and postrace meal, low registration fee and the great swag, how the heck do they turn a profit? Race was well organized. Very friendly locals. No hassle and easly logistics with a shuttle bus taking you to and from the host hotel to the start/finish. Not a race for people looking for bands, spectator support, etc. True runners' race put on by runners. Definitely 2 thumbs up to the race director, volunteers and locals!!! The only suggestions I have for the RD 1) Have bigger cups at the water stations. Some of the stations used very small cups (like dixie cups) 2) Perhaps a few more porta potties at the start

Nice course; great support; great post-race

A nice course with a variety of scenery: lakes, LSU campus, residential neighborhoods, plenty of shade. Volunteers at aid stations were GREAT; different 'themes' and cheered us on! Post-race was good; but give us the water/PowerAde as we finish (I had to go look for it). Lots of great food: jambalaya, beer, etc. Nice setting on the lake/beach to relax after the race. Great 'goody bag' with more than just a tech shirt; also a BR Beach Marathon duffel bag, gloves, BRBM socks. All the race people were friendly and helpful. A great small race.

BRBM 2011: Easy, nice, value & warm

BRBM hooked me with the humor on the website. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality/quantity of race organization & schwag. Overall the race was well-communicated & managed (a more detailed course map on website would help with course preview drive); expectations set, were met. Many extras made it personable, unique & nice; regional food (more dishes for vegetarians, please) at packet pick-up & post race was plentiful and at which participants felt in no rush: strangers/folks sat & socialized, ICE COLD soda/beer at the Finish Line on a warm day was GREAT!!, Nice/funny medal, good shirt, tote bag, gloves (not needed) and great running socks. BRBM is a good value, friendly, easy-going, manageable, flat race along pleasant neighborhoods & waterways. Highly recommended.

FANTASTIC marathon experience!

I LOVED this race from beginning to end! Popular among 50 Staters and Marathon Maniacs, with good reason!! Easy packet pickup, great tech shirt and socks, and yummy pasta feed gave everyone a chance to catch up at the end of the year, and make plans for 2011. The RD was extremely accommodating of those with flight constraints, and allowed an early start. Pretty flat, two-loop course, wound through the LSU campus, along the lake, and through some pretty neighborhoods. Streets were well policed, and with the exception of one water stop on the second loop (completely deserted), the volunteers were incredible!! I can't say enough about the food at the finish - jambalaya, alligator, chicken, soda, BBQ - you name it, they had it!!! A great bang for your buck, easily spectated for your non-running friends, and really cool finisher medal. Make this your LA marathon destination - you can always visit The Big Easy post-race!!

Want to run Louisiana? DON'T miss this one!

This race was far better than I expected. Craig and Crew did a great job keeping this race optimal. BR Police were wonderful with traffic (minimal on the course) One water stop was empty at about mile 20. But let me tell you: the food and fluids at race-end were unequalled in any of my previous 20 marathons! I actually liked the double loop. I knew what to expect for the last half of my marathon. I'm trying not to repeat states yet, but if I were going to repeat Louisiana, this race would be it!

Very well run marathon

I chose to run this race because it fit the calendar en route to doing all 50 states. I have to say, though, that of all the races I've done over the years, this one stands out as one of the best. The registration area was well organized and efficient. Good assortment of race amenities like socks, gloves and tech shirt. The pre-race meal was really a nice thing for the racers, especially the Jambalaya! The course itself was situated on and near the LSU campus. It's a beautiful campus to run through. Yeah, it's a two-loop course, but it's still scenic and far from mundane. The finish area was not typical. Like I've read in many other reviews, there were tons of coolers with a wide variety of pop, beer and water. The post-race food was incredible. There were lots of choices, including some alligator dish. If I had four thumbs, I'd give the race four thumbs up. I would highly recommend the race for the 50-stater crowd for sure. The finisher's medals were colorful and of good weight. The age group awards were unique and topped off an outstanding race.

Superb marathon experience!

What a fabulous marathon! The expo was quite a surprise: great food and drinks as well as various products. The race was well organized. The course was well supported, with good traffic control. The food post-race was incredible. I have never seen so much food - and such a variety - at the end of a race! Also, endless coolers of various beverages - all icy cold! That was appreciated because the weather was so warm. The race director was the best! I LOVED the green tech shirt and the medal. I would do this one again! Thanks to Craig and all of the volunteers!

Nice Race for Half-Marathoners

This was my 20th marathon. I've run all over the country, on all kinds of courses. They have a great course here, the organization is pretty good (up to a point), and the traffic control was great. However, this race really caters to the halfers. It's a two-loop course, and everyone starts together. But during the second loop of the marathon more than one water station had packed up and left before I got there. One (17 mile) was gone before the 3-hour mark. The course is not flat but there are not really any major hills. There were several residents out at the side of the road cheering for the runners during my first loop, and some even stayed out through the time it took me to get through the second loop. The shuttle to and from the hotel really was welcome, since there is very little parking at the start/finish area.

Great Marathon

This was my 3rd marathon, and my first one in LA. I thought packet pickup was a bit crowded, but I got my packet fairly easily. Loved the socks, although the shirt was a little bright. The starting point was easy to get to... my boyfriend parked on a side street and it was easy to walk to the start. This was my first time doing a double-loop course and I thought I would get discouraged passing the finish line and watching all the halfers get to stop, but it wasn't too bad. There are NOT a lot of fans on the course, which is disappointing considering how much of the race is ran through neighborhoods. There were even fewer fans for the marathoners on their 2nd loop. The Houston Marathon is almost all throughout neighborhoods and the people of Houston treat the marathon like a huge block party. Those at the water stations were enthusiastic though, and I especially liked the LSU Cowgirl water stop... they stuck it out to the end and were so funny! As for the weather, which nobody has control over, it was a little warmer than I like: 50s at the start and 70s at the finish (at least when I finished). I only saw one water station abandoned, and that was around mile 20. Luckily my boyfriend was riding his bike throughout the course and was able to give me some water. Overall, the course is nice with lakes and beautiful homes. It was well marked and I never felt lik I would lose my way even though I was pretty much alone during the 2nd half. The BR Sheriff's Dept. and all other volunteers did a great job stopping traffic. The medals were great, and there was still a bunch of food and drinks at the finish when I got in at 4:33.

Loved this race!!

Flat, lots of shade, and a two-loop course through the campus of LSU and surrounding neighborhoods. Previous comments were right on - watch for cars, but the police did a pretty good job with traffic control. BIG PROPS to the RD for allowing an early start for those with flights to catch and those who are slower walkers/runners. Great swag - cool shirt, really cool medal, gloves, socks, and a koozie. Nice pre-race meal, and really great buffet post-race - you have to try the alligator stew!! This is a small race, really well done, that won't be small for long!! WAY TO GO, YOU CRAZY CHICKENS!!

Great event and good times

This was a fun event - and the volunteers saw to that. We had pizza and dirty rice the night before the race, and by the looks of it some of the cooks have seen a lot more dirty rice than negative splits. So there you have it - a bunch of folks looking for a good time, and some of us runners were fortunate enough to be invited. Course was fast; but curves and random potholes made it slower. I didn't mind the curves, as they made the run more enjoyable. Organization - I only ran past mile 14; stations were enthusiastic and stocked. Spectators - They were doing all sorts of zany things, and it looked like they enjoyed themselves. Hotel - We stayed at the host hotel (Marriott) and it was refreshing to have a hotel staff that seemed pleased to help us with our spontaneous needs. I've attended races where the hotels did a lot less and let you know that they were not pleased. Swag - Shirt, medal, and socks are one-of-a-kind. Only bad thing was the traffic to New Orleans airport - 8.5 miles in 57 minutes in bumper-to-bumper freeway traffic. I was sick, and had a DNF, and had a terrible ride back to New Orleans; but all of the fun and hospitality of the folks in Baton Rouge made it an enjoyable event that I'll have to come back to.

Great, no-fuss, very scenic, fun course.

+ This is a fast, fun, and scenic run. It's a double loop but the second time around allows you to really take in what you missed the first time around... much appreciated because there is so much to see. Aid stations were well stocked with water/sports drinks, but no food/GU/Clif Bars/etc. Good crowd support, with tons of people not in the race running around the lake offering encouragement. The weather was perfect. Races like this make it hard to rest and recover. I'm already excited about the next run. - The only complaint (or maybe it's ignorance on my part) is how the start was conducted. The half runners start on the opposite side of the road, facing traffic. The full runners stage behind the halfers, going with traffic until they merge 100 yards ahead as the road narrows and gets very congested. This was my 2nd marathon so I don't know if it would work better to have everything switched so that the fulls can get ahead of the mess. But that is really the worst thing. I was clear after 2 miles and ran a sub 3:30... so who's complaining? Bonus: My wife and kids had a blast waiting for me in the park at the start, thus remaining supportive as I continue to log miles/hours. I can't wait to do it again!!! Highly recommended!!!

Fun Race Weekend!

This was such a fun race weekend! My husband and I flew in Friday afternoon for some time away from our kids and me to run the marathon. Course is fairly flat, pretty, and interesting for the 2 loops. It is open to traffic, but that was not a big deal; it was well marked and there were police/volunteers at major intersections. Lots of concrete, though, so a little sore from that. Amazing number of water stops about every 1.5 miles for the first loop, although the best one was the LSU row team and they were closed up on the second loop. That was not good because it was getting hotter and we really needed that water, besides being kind of discouraging. Really no spectators, but the volunteers were great and my husband was able to see my 5-6 times - plus at the finish. Great swag! I got a tech shirt, matching socks, gloves, can cooler, and a nice medal! The BEST post-race party - they had free beer, soda, fried catfish, chicken wings, and a whole bunch of other yummy things to eat. Shuttle to the start was a little slow, but no problem getting back after the race. Stayed at the Marriott and that was a nice deal. Go to Mansuers for crab cakes to celebrate! Loved the race and had a really nice weekend for marathon #18 and Louisiana!

not recommended for full marathon

After reading comments about 2009 having problems with water stations, I assumed that this would be corrected. The first half was well supported. However, two stations were gone on the second loop and one had just left small cups of water. Considering the warmer temperatures, this was not adequate. If you plan to run the full, plan to carry fluids.

Would love to run it again!

I did some driving to get to this race too (16-plus hours), coming from Wisconsin, but it was definitely worth it! I love the course set-up with doing 2 loops of the same. All of the volunteers were super friendly, packet-pickup was well-organized, and the shirts are great! The weather was an awesome 70 degrees or so at the finish, which is a real treat for a Wisconin runner in December! Thanks for a fantastic race!

Well done, Baton Rouge!

I did the BRBM the second time yesterday (I pulled out halfway last year due to injury). It's a great double-loop course, running through the LSU campus and skirting the shores of the lake. An egret walked in front of me - is that good luck? The course is well-marked, so that even the second loop is easy for runners to stay on course. The volunteers were wonderful; unfortunately there weren't enough of them, and one table on the second loop was unmanned (though that may not have been an official water stop in the first place). But there was plenty of food at the finish, at least after 4 hours. All in all, a great destination for 50-staters; it's only an hour's drive from New Orleans Airport, there are plenty of cheap hotels near the start, and the solid organization makes everyone feel at home.

Most enjoyable race ever

The Baton Rouge race was by far the most well planned run I have ever participated in. Registration was well organized by enthusiastic and friendly volunteers. The pre-race dinner featured a very tasty jambalaya. I also saw salad and pizza with an array of drinks to choose from. The organizers provided wonderful shuttles to and from the start and finish line from the Marriott Hotel. Before the race they had coffee available as well as an adequate number of porta-potties. The course was nice and scenic without much in the way of hills. At the finish there was a vast amount of tasty food and drinks. This could not have been a more enjoyable run. Also, along the route they had water/Gatorade stations fewer than every two miles.

G-R-E-A-T

If the weather gods are kind and you open yourself to the environs, the run around the lakes will offer you a sense of peace and serenity unparalleled by the big-city, urban-street marathons. If the crowd of half-marathoners distracts you from this opportunity to enjoy Mother Nature at her Baton Rouge finest, don't despair. The repeat second loop will offer you a quieter run. The well-marked course, with mile markers painted on the road as well as side of the road signage has more curves than a nest of snakes in a Louisiana bayou, so take advantage and run those tangents. The organization is top-notch. The RD deserves the award for "most accommodating." He's easy-going and unruffled, and has put together a team that keeps everything running smoothly, efficiently, and effectively. The pre-race Louisiana-style dinner at packet pick-up only whets the appetite for the Cajun food fest after you finish your event. Be sure to thank Chef Cecil for this unique southern culinary experience - if you can find him. He's onsite, but wears many other "hats" marathon day. The matching high-tech marathon shirt and medal sport the marathon's identifiable "chicken" logo and both are stand-out "brillant." Although fans, per se, are lacking, you'll have great fan support from the aid station volunteers, approximately every 1.5 miles. Yes, some are absent on the second loop (when was the last time you gave up your Saturday morning to pamper runners?) but there's no need to grouse; take that opportunity to enjoy the wildlife "fan" support, especially the stately cranes who stand statue-still in the lakes as they watch you run by. They were worth the five-star fan rating. Thank you to Craig and Dawn, Bill, Cecil, Shirley, Marsha and John for a great marathon weekend. See you next year.

POST-RACE THE BEST OUT THERE

The course layout is great. I love the rolling hills. The problems are at the bridge at about mile 20. This should be cut down to one lane. Cars can't see oncoming traffic because of the grade. I came really close to getting hit. The other problem is the last turn to the straightaway. Since it is a double-loop, you have faster marathoners trying to make it through a small obstructed sidewalk filled with half-marathon walkers. NOT FUN. Other than these two areas, this was a good course. As far as organization, it couldn't get any better. The packet pick-up and mini-expo were well organized, and the food was a nice treat. The post-race FESTIVAL was unreal. With the tech-shirts, socks, gloves, and all of the food, food, and more food, I don't see how they made any money. Spectators get only three stars because of two of the water stations. The first was a small version of the Wellesley Girls at Boston, and the other was a group dressed up like cowboys with a big sign saying, "Save a horse; run a marathon." People in Baton Rouge are very lucky to have such a great running club.

Awesome marathon! One of the best-kept secrets!

Just completed the 2010 edition. This was my first BRBM. I am glad I drove 10 hours each way and across 5 states to get here. I take it the event has grown and undoubtedly will continue to draw more people, but organizers have kept pace. Registration and package pickup were easy. Course was well marked and volunteers and police to direct us were present where needed. It was an open course and you do have to pay attention for cars. Few supporters/spectators on the course, especially for the second loop of the marathon. Only suggestion is more porta-potties - especially at the start! Great job, Crazy Chickens!

Full marathon not recommended

It's good to do 2 laps of the same 1/2 marathon because it enables you to know what's ahead. However, on the second lap a lot of the fans were gone because the majority of runners are there for the 1/2. Some of the water stations were even abandoned towards the finish line and this was just 4 hours after the race started. Highly disorganized. A beautiful course around the lakes (if you're okay with running the same course twice).

I do and I did

I am a marathon runner. Being a father of 4 and grandfather of 1 takes a lot of my time. Marathons are my time (3 to 4 hours), and all my time to be alone. Until I met Carla. Carla has been going to races with me for two years. In a dream, I saw The Baton Rouge Marathon as a new start in life. Everything was perfect. The pre-meal fellowship, team work of the crew and, of course, my 3:24 of nothing but fun running. Thank you, Baton Rouge Beach Marathon, for a wonderful race and a wonderful time. The marathon that will make you say, "I do!!!"

Seemed less organized than the year before

This was my second time running the BRBM (half). It seemed that there were fewer volunteers on the route and absolutely very few spectators (snow). The curves present a great challenge. The after party was improved in 2009. I would suggest that the organizers plan for at least a 3-5% overage in the swag planning for last-minute registers. The website is not fun; it's immature. Baton Rouge is becoming quite the little running city. Take this run more serious and it could become a premier race. Overall, I would recommend that you run it.

Great running weather-flat/fast course

Weather conditions were outstanding for a marathon. The course was relatively flat. The only area of concern is that the right turn after the bridge needs one more sentry for traffic control. Pre- and post-race festivities were outstanding (free); awards took place very quickly; and music was relaxing and refreshing as we ate and waited for awards. Race Director Chris Watson and his volunteers did an outstanding job with the race.

A "cool" morning in Baton Rouge

First of all, who would have thought we'd be treated to snow the night before the race in Baton Rouge, of all places? An interesting, special event for sure.... :o) I found the BRB Marathon to be everything that it had been advertised to be. * Relatively small (under 1,000 total participants) * Very hospitable (great food and attitudes) * Predominantly flat, double-loop course (neither boring nor difficult) * Great swag for the entry fee (tech shirt, gloves, and socks) The only possible item that could be improved upon is to keep working to better manage vehicle traffic on the course. Overall, I highly recommend this race to anyone searching for a small, laid back, PR-conducive and super hospitable event!

Fantastic. A MUST!

This was a fantastic race. If you like small marathons, you are going to like this one. The course is awesome and very flat. The food at the packet pick-up was great, but even better at the post-race party. The catfish and alligator were great. We also received a tech shirt, gloves, and socks at the expo. If you need a lot of fan support, don't expect much; but the ones that were out there were very supportive. If you are trying to do the 50 states, then don't let this one pass you by for Louisiana.

Great local flavor... but watch out for cars

I agree with all of the other comments. It is well organized, with lots of energy from the local club, great food at packet pick-up and after the race. Smaller event that makes all runners feel important. Two negatives: (1) One aid station was abandoned on the second loop. There was lots of PowerAde left, but it was self-serve. Not a very big deal. (2) It is not a closed course, and at times, there is a lot of traffic on the course. You have to be very aware, or you could be in big trouble. It's not any worse than what most have to deal with on training runs, but during a race, I tend not to think about traffic.

No Room For Improvement

Great experience! I was humbled to see the RD and volunteers work so hard and smart to serve the runners. Every volunteer was enthusiastic. All worked as one team, demonstrating huge dedication. Worth the very reasonable registration fee, and more. Basically flat and beautiful course: two loops around LSU lake and campus. Much water fowl to view during the race. Nice colorful medal, great tech shirt specifying "marathon," perfect organization, and exotic food provided. Abundant water and food stations. Sufficient porta-potties. While in town, use side roads/traffic. I recommend this race for any first-timer.

Great Half Marathon

This was a great event. The course was great. It was a little chilly in the morning, at the start. The shuttle service from the hotel and back was well run. I had to be in New Orleans right after the race, and they shuttled me right back to hotel. They had a nice, scenic course around LSU and lake. Thanks to Mr. Watson for answering all of my questions, and thanks also to all volunteers. If I ever get back this way, I will for sure enter this race again. - Glenn B., from New Brunswick, Canada

The best of Baton Rouge

I ran the half marathon and let me tell you: I have not see Baton Rouge look finer than Saturday morning, December 5, 2009. It had snowed the night before, but the race morning was cold and clear. I loved the way the course looped around the LSU campus and surrounding neighborhoods. Good food, nice shirts. I lived in Baton Rouge 25 years ago and felt that this race was a wonderful welcome back. I recommend it and would do it again.

HIDDEN GEM

Amazing course - especially the second half of the loop along the lake. Great food after the race!! No doubt this one does not get the attention or number of entrants that it deserves. Perhaps that is what made it so great. PR on the course and great race swag, from tech shirt to socks!! Definitely will be back! Minutes from the airport and plenty of affordable accommodations. Race Director Craig is hands on to answer any question and organize this hidden gem among marathons. The 16th year was fantastic!

Lousiana hospitality at its best!!

Unseasonable cold and snow the previous evening kept the numbers of runners and spectators lower than expected. That didn't cool the enthusiasm of the host Running Chicken Track Club. Highlights included free food at package pickup, a keepsake timing chip, technical t-shirt, socks and gloves, accurate timing, a festive finish, colorful medal, and plenty of exotic and ordinary food and beverages. Baton Rouge RV facilities are limited. We were pleased to park our RV at Farr Equestrian and RV Park, about 4 miles from the start.

Great Race

This was a great race. It was well organized & the people were great. The only slightly negative thing that I have to say is that the start was not very good. My partner and I never heard the start, but just noticed people running. Other than that, it was a great race. There were not a lot of spectators, but the few out there generally stayed well into the marathoner. Traffic was well controlled, with volunteers and police at every intersection. I was really pleased with this race since I was able to cut an hour off of my old PR!!! Great course!!!!

A race you will not regret!!

I absolutely loved the Baton Rouge Beach Marathon! This race has it all - great organization, friendly volunteers and a lovely course. Excellent transportation to and from the race from the host hotel, with some of the best post-race food ever - including jambalaya and alligator (now where else can you get that?). Also, the results were posted immediately so that you didn't have to stand around all day to see if you placed or not. The awards ceremony was conducted in a timely manner with plenty of time for those of us from out-of-town to get back to the hotel long prior to checkout time. Also, the medal is great and very colorful. WELL DONE to the race director and all of the volunteers. This is a small race based on the number of participants, but it is huge in every other category. If you are a 50-stater and need a good race for Louisiana, then look no further. You've found it here with the BRBM - you won't be disappointed!

A great race from packet pick-up to finish line!

From start to finish, the race was done well. Packet pick up was efficient and the goodies very generous: shirt, gloves and the coolest socks, which I have worn several times since race day! Food was generous (although I was early so don't know about the later-arriving runners). Shuttle buses on-time. Intersections were well manned. (Although you better keep your wits about you running through LSU - cars were everywhere. For a few minutes you actually don't feel like you are in a race at all.) The only negative comment I would make would be this: when starting the second loop for the full marathon, the first two fluid stations had been "abandoned." There were plenty of filled cups, but the feeling I got was that the race catered more to half marathoners. My feeling was short-lived, however; the remaining stations did have volunteers. Overall, a great event, and one I would do again.

A nice race, but...

I ran the half-marathon, so maybe some of the comments won't apply to the full. In general, this was a nice race with very friendly organizers and volunteers. I didn't expect to get a full dinner the night before the race, but I was lucky to get there early because they ran out of food. On the morning of the race, the organizers put out hot cocoa, coffee, and some cookies for the runners. That was a very nice touch. After the race, we enjoyed great food and drinks again, including beer, alligator stew, gumbo, and jambalaya... yummy! The course is fast, so you'll have a real good chance of getting a PR in this race. I did, and was thrilled. Now, there are a couple of things that could be improved: 1. Traffic was plain scary. Some drivers were oblivious to the runners and unfortunately there were not enough officers directing traffic in some intersections. 2. When I finished the race, I tried in vain to find the medical tent or any type of first aid. I asked the organizers for an ice pack, which I needed to apply to my ankle, and they told me to get some from the ice cooler because EMS was still on the course (but they would come to the finish soon). Eventually, the race organizer was resourceful and provided me with a plastic grocery bag so that I could get the ice. I have run many races and have never seen a marathon where there was not first aid at the finish 2:30 hours into the race. I really feel that this is a nice race overall and I would recommend it to others. Hopefully, the organizers will try to fix these issues for next year.

Flat and Friendly

I was looking for a smaller race than Mardi Gras for picking up Louisiana in my quest for 50 marathons in 50 states. This was an excellent choice! And from reading the information on the website, I knew the race director or his public information officer had to be somewhat of a character. First off, I had to drive through a mess of Baton Rouge area traffic to get to the host hotel - traffic on and off the interstate was heavy. But don't let that discourage you. It is worth it. The check in was at the Marriott, and was an accomplishment to be done in 3 hours. There were lines, but still, it was well organized and flowed well. At the Marriott the race committee provided southern cooking for the runners, including shrimp pasta, jambalaya, and of course pizza - which wasn't especially southern. It was still quite a spread. The race started about 1 mile west of the hotel, at a beach/park area, but was not a sandy beach as you might imagine. There was limited parking there (we camped there, which might have been illegal, but no one ran us off). The marathoners and half-marathoners were divided for the start, and then joined about a block away. The weather was favorable too, starting in the mid 40's and probably reaching the mid 60's with sunshine later in the morning. The course was a double loop. Near the start, it entered the LSU campus, and looped around and through the campus; then there was a small hill exiting toward the east. Eventually, we passed under the freeway (I-10, I think), and entered a residential area. The course stayed mostly residential after that and also followed along the shores of what appeared to be different lakes, before returning to the starting area for the second loop. The scenery was quite beautiful, with the lakes, duckweed, water hyacinths, and an occasional crane bird. There were not a lot of spectators for this race, but it was a small marathon in a smaller town. And as one other person commented on, you might well have been running alone for the second loop. Since there were a lot of turns, it was easy to get off the "beaten path." The course was paint-marked on the road, but it would still be easy to miss a turn (and some did). I did not see any cones marking critical points or turns. And later in the second loop some aid station volunteers and crosswalk personnel left their posts. We were on our own for the later part of the race, and we cleared our own traffic by waiting for the cars to pass. The post-race food included alligator tail, gumbo, and fruit, with plenty of stuff to drink too. If you are looking for a smaller size event (total number of runners was limited to 750) this marathon is well worth it. And the southern food set before the runners is food others would have paid extra money to have.

Tale of Two Races

When you overhear a spectator around mile 5 say, "They don't support the second half of the race that well," you don't know what to expect on the second half. The first loop of the course was well supported and traffic control was excellent. The second loop, spectators disappeared (I don't need them to run, but it seemed like most everyone came out for the half). I'd say 75% of the volunteers seemed to be alert and did an outstanding job. But there are two things I should not have to worry about when running a road marathon: 1) cars blowing their horns; 2) wondering if I'm gonna have to stop at the approaching intersection. Well, I did have a horn blown at me near the football stadium (nowhere else to run except on the road), but I didn't have to stop at any intersection (the police didn't get out of his car, but just pulled his car into the middle of the road to stop traffic as I approached). If I didn't have to worry about cars/traffic I would have given the course a five-star rating. Fans? I run small races and don't need them, but the ones who came out were gone by the time I went around the second time. Race-day packet pick-up, bag drop, and parking were excellent. Post-race food/support were excellent - gotta try the gator!

Good one to do

This was #43 and my third in seven weeks. I was hoping for more of a level course; this one had a few more hills than I was expecting. Plenty of fluids. This is a good one to do. I like the smaller marathons But the packet pickup was congested, and the marathon could be started earlier than the half. Part of the course is too narrow for all of the runners. It could be called the "Running with the Cars Marathon"; I never noticed a beach. This one is getting too big. Parking wasn't a problem because we got there early. Time to rethink things. I'm sure my issues were ok when it was a smaller race.

flat course, perfect weather

This was a great, small marathon. The course was very flat, with frequent and well staffed aid stations. The weather was perfect. First Marathon

This was my first full marathon. Everyone that put on this marathon was extremely helpful and polite. The registration and packet pick up process was fast and well organized. The course shows a great view of Baton Rouge. You get to run by LSU'S Tiger Stadium, the LSU campus and around the LSU lAKES. Being my first marathon, I can't compare it to others, but the only disappointing aspect was the lack of spectators at the finish line for us slower runners - although race officials were still there ready to put the nice finishers medal around your neck. I do plan on running this race again next year, and thanks to Varsity Sports for answering all of my questions during training. Lots of good food and beer at finish line.

A REALLY nice marathon!

Wow, what a great time! This is a small-town event, so if you are looking for big crowds and an expo, go somewhere else. If you want to meet some nice people who know how to put on a race, please visit Baton Rouge. This was the 20th state in my quest for all 50. The course is a two-looper with only one hill, so you should be capable of fast times, even if I am not. My thanks to Lee from Mississippi for running with me over the last 6 miles. The post-race cookout has some pretty interesting southern food and lots of it, as well as plenty to wash it down with, including beer. I stayed at the host hotel, which was fine, although you should try to get a room away from the highway noise. There was some confusion about late checkouts, though the race director had specifically arranged for them with the management. All in all, I highly recommend this race.

BRBM was my 30th and one of my most memorable marathons. Temps (high 30s to start, low 50s at finish) coupled with an extremely flat course, routed through streets lined with huge Spanish oaks and around an interesting large lake, made it a day when it's just plain joyful to run. I liked running the course twice (a double loop) so that I knew exactly what to expect in the second half. Most races that are organized by running clubs are well done and this one is no exception to that rule! The positives: · Early 7 a.m. start and on-time · Beautiful Brooks long-sleeved tech shirt with blank reverse · Microfiber socks with running club's logo · Brooks 50/50 running gloves · PR, flat course with scenery; not boring at all · Timing chips · Great pre- and post-race food · Handsome black tile age bracket awards The negatives: · Some uneven pavement (watch your step) · A few sections of running with traffic (local drivers were courteous) · Baton Rouge traffic is very congested (lots of folks displaced from Katrina seem to have settled here) Still, and without a doubt, this marathon is a gem!

The lordly knight is kind to the serfs...

Wow! Of the 30-plus marathons I've done, this one is in the top three. And I'm not sure that it's not tied for #1 with 2 others... (it's like picking children...). They had a yummy pre-race meal of home-cooked Cajun food - complete with beer (for those of us who aren't out to set any course records). Slick pre-race registration, substantial schwag (long-sleeve tech shirt, tech chicken socks, and gloves all for $60???). The course has two loops, which usually isn't my favorite, but it is such a lovely combination of the LSU campus, stately Southern homes with arching old live oaks, and calming waterfront that I noticed new things on each lap. The second lap was lonely as expected, but the aid stations were still fully stocked with plentiful PowerAde and calories, even for those who are out at a more leisurely pace. There was even more local Cajun food at the end, and more beer. Thanks to Cecil for the great food, and the most memorable quote of the day, to some uppity geese: "I'll make some gumbo outta y'all!" My only picayune suggestion to the race director - embrace the chicken!! I love the chicken logo, and was disappointed that it wasn't integrated into the medal and shirt design. :)

Very well organized local marathon

Ran this race because it was close to home and fit my schedule conveniently. I had a fantastic experience... carving over 14 minutes off of your PR will do that (now under 4:00). However, I almost did not run this event, as the website seemed really unprofessional and the ridiculous chicken noises every time I visited the page made me cringe. Really gave the impression of a thrown-together club run. But the reality was quite different. Very professionally organized. Online registration was very simple. Packet pickup was a breeze. Course was well marked. Post-race festivities were great: music, food, nearly immediate posting of results. Great shirt as well. (I am a bit frustrated that those results haven't been posted anywhere on the internet yet.) The size of the race kept the finish area from being overwhelming. My family also enjoyed the race, as they were able to easily see me at several points along the double loop course. I would the describe the second half of each loop as having a little bit of "roll" to it. (More than I expected, but keep in mind we run railroad crossings for hill training where I live.) Second loop sans half runners had the real potential to get lonely; however, I met Bob from Cincinnati and we paced each other most of the rest of the way. Thanks, Bob. I plan to run the race again next year.

Organized by Runners for Runners

I traveled from Maryland to Louisiana for a late fall marathon and I wasn't disappointed. The course was flat with one small hill on an overpass. Registration was smooth and easy - and I even got a surprise pair of colorful chicken socks. The Friday night dinner was fantastic for out-of-towners. I traveled alone, but met lots of runners, many attempting the 50 marathons in 50 states challenge. Weather was perfect - 50 at the start. Buses ran on time. The volunteers at the water stops were enthusiastic... especially the dozen bananas and the gorilla! The two-loop course was lightly crowded on the first lap (with the 1/2 participants). The second lap required you to dig down a little deeper. The post-race feast was the best I ever had. I really enjoyed the Cajun dishes!! Very happy with the entire experience. Would highly recommend.

Baton Rouge Beach Marathon

Not to be argumentative with anyone else that has posted comments here about the Baton Rouge Beach Marathon, but there are a few comments that have been made that could be looked at from a different perspective: The singlets: I didn't feel that the singlets were cheap. They were short-sleeved technical shirts made by Brooks. They only had the Baton Rouge Beach Chicken logo on them. I liked them much better than shirts I've received in other events (including the Chicago Marathon) because they were technical shirts (not cotton) and they weren't plastered with any logos from the sponsors. Kind of refreshing and something that I will wear long afterwards. Gu or other energy supplements: Like most runners that I know, I am kind of finicky and made certain to bring my own so I could use the same supplements during the run that I trained with and so I wouldn't be reliant on anyone else. Also, occasionally during the course there were spectators that were handing out candy canes and other sugar items to help pump up your sugar levels if you wanted to go that route. Sparse crowds: It has been pretty well documented in this forum that this isn't the kind of marathon that has a high level of spectator energy throughout the entire course. The finish line did lack a little of that energy/climax that a runner would hope for. That being said, the post-race food, drinks and camaraderie were a lot of fun. The event wasn't so big that it became unmanageable and wasn't so small that it was forgettable. It was a nice balance.

Only worth it if you are local

I ran this marathon because it was a local Louisiana race. I knew the field would be small but I wanted to try it. The course itself was challenging. It had lots of long, gradual inclines that really took their toll on me. That, however, was where the good points stopped. The singlets were extremely cheap for a marathon. The weather was unusually warm, however, the organizers gave not help to the runners at the aid stations. No fruit, Gu, salty items, etc. were given at the aid stations; only water and Gatorade. The course was a little confusing at the half marathon point, and if you are not careful, you will end up running through the half marathon finish. The finish line was poor for photo ops because the finish sign was facing the wrong way and the clock was barely readable. There were very few spectators, especially on the last 13 miles. Be prepared for a lot of miles of running alone. If you are a Baton Rouge local, this is an ok race. But if you are looking for a real marathon experience, you are better off running New Orleans.

Great Time!

The Baton Rouge Beach Marathon was a great experience. As many others have previously indicated, the event is well organized and there are a lot of little extra things the organizers do that add to the fun. I'm from Chicago and came to Baton Rouge earlier in the week to make certain that I would be acclimated to the area. I wanted to do a practice run on a section of the course on Wednesday and the great news was that the course was already marked out several days ahead of time. The course itself ran through the heart of LSU's campus and through some of the local neighborhoods. It was very attractive and, although the weather was ideal, it was laid out mainly in areas that kept the runners out of the direct sun and in shady tree-lined streets. All major intersections were covered throughout both legs of the double-loop course by police, so traffic was never a problem, and the water stops and bathrooms were ideally located. Never had a problem with any part of the course. I felt that the course ran fast, too. Although the crowd wasn't very big throughout the course, it didn't detract from the run in any way. The people that were out were all friendly and the water station volunteers were all helpful and added to the fun by dressing in costumes like bananas and cheerleaders. The packet pickup was pretty busy but the lines moved quickly and there was a great array of free food and drinks available. The after-race event was pretty elaborate, too - several different kinds of foods ranging from jambalaya to hot dogs, and there were plenty of different kinds of drinks, too, ranging from water to pop to energy drinks and beer. It was a great event and I couldn't have had a better time. My thanks go out to all of the people who organized this event to make it a great time!

Stellar event!!! I will return!!!

This may not be a great event for a first-timer, but for anyone else, this is the best marathon event in LA, hands down! Baton Rouge is a beautiful city and the course travels through the most scenic parts of town. Views include LSU, Tiger Stadium, historic mansions, scenic waterfronts, and tons of huge oaks and Spanish moss. This is the premiere, down-south race! There are no expo, no elite Kenyan teams, no prize money, and an extremely small field, but very, very well organized and beautiful course. I will be back next year. Thank you, BRBM!!!

Just Gets Better

This race just gets better every year. I enjoy this event so much. The weather gods smile on this race and this edition was sunny with an occasional breeze. Warm, but could have been much worse. A two-loop marathon has its own challenges, but I for one enjoy the contrast between the first lap and the second. There's a big old half-marathon composed mostly of local people, with a very impressive contingent of LSU students and staff thrown in. No other SEC town could have better town-gown relations or participation. There was noticeably less traffic than usual - perhaps because of the road trip to the SEC Championship football game in Atlanta. The second lap was more fun after teaming up with a first-timer who needed a bit of encouragement. Because I lived here years ago, the course makes me feel nostalgic. I caught my first fish in University Lake. I remember when the Lake froze in '62.... How they manage to keep that wonderful alligator avec sauce piquant for the slower boys is beyond me. There may be 4 or 5 demi-marathoners these days for every two-lapper, but the food and drinks are there big-time no matter how long it takes. On a fair weather day, the runners are joined in the late morning by hordes of recreational runners and walkers enjoying the lake area, but that only adds to the ambiance of the event in its latter stages. The race is graced by one of the nation's finest race photographers. Her photos are generally first-rate. A word to the wise - come early if you want finish line parking. When they say the parking is limited these days, they ain't just woofing. Finally, all that online diatribe couched in feudal parlance about knights and such - it's absolutely metaphysically true! The vassals are loyal to the benevolent but tyrannical lord of this manor who insists on universal kindness and civility.

First-timer had a great time

Well, come race day I wasn't as prepared for this marathon as I would have liked, but I finished, and only a little slower than the average finishing time, which is fine by me. The second half of the race was a little lonely, as others have said previously, but the course is nice and interesting, and everything seemed very well organized. The one question I have is related to the very professional-looking photographer taking pictures of passing runners.... Where can we get a look at those photos???

A must-do

Other posters have adequately described the course, delicious food, goodies (shirts, etc). This is a great training run for bigger events (will certainly check your mental strength) in that there is low (but good) crowd support. Your determination is especially checked once passing the half (you will run most of the 2nd half by yourself). Hats off to this running club for a spectacular job. Good Cajun folks passing a good time. Planning to run again in 2007.

Laissez bontemps roulez!

Although I didn't do so well due to numerous factors, I enjoyed myself. The weather was perfect: mid thirties at start, low fifties at the finish. The course was relatively flat, run on LSU campus and nearby neighborhoods decorated for Christmas. This is a small, running club affair. I couldn't find any mention of the race in the local papers the day before or the day after. Most people were running the half. There were plenty of water/aid tables and people staffing them on my first loop, but the second time around, there were some stations unstaffed (though they still had abundant fluids out). I had plenty of company on my first loop, but the second one was rather lonely. There was one scary place on the second loop where we had to cross the street and I had to stop and let cars pass first, then cross and run on the sidewalk of a railroad overpass; this point had traffic control on my first loop. I'd never done a double loop course before, and with its numerous twists and turns, this one drained me. Still, I would recommend this race to someone who's done a few marathons. There were all sorts of nice things not mentioned on website or flyer. Enough food served at packet pickup (gumbo, jambalaya, salad, pastries) to qualify as dinner. In addition to nice short-sleeve technical shirt, packets included Defeet Socks with the BRB Marathon design. At the end of the race, there was a finisher's technical LS shirt, a pair of Spenco sandals (neither mentioned anywhere), and a very nice medal. Post-race refreshments included an abundance of fresh fruit, water, sodas, "alligator piquant," gumbo, jambalaya, hot dogs, and pastries, served up by some very friendly folks. Shuttles to and from the host hotel were there when they said they'd be. Host hotel was great for the price, and close to the start/finish. There were lots of fun holiday things going on; I went to Nachidoches for their Holiday Lights Festival after the race.

Great race to majorly PR!

This was my 3rd marathon and I had been a 5-hour marathoner for a while. I was so surprised to have knocked of half an hour from my time. Though it started out at 29 deg. F, it turned out to be perfect weather to run the perfect race. The sun being out helped warm things up a bit. Packet pickup was well organized and was surprised to find yummy food to top off the evening. Really enjoyed the friendly volunteers and the light atmosphere. Bonus: the socks with chickens and the short-sleeve tech shirt. Extra bonus: long-sleeve finisher's tech shirt. Was not expecting that last bit. The second half of the course was a bit lonely in terms of spectators, but was I was actually okay with that. There were two unmanned water tables, but no biggie. At least there were cups filled with water and PowerAde. Found that a few simple mantras helped to get over minor hills/bumps in the road. Nothing serious, minus the overpass. Post-race food was great! Hot gumbo after a long race hit the spot. People were once again very supportive and friendly.

Drove 8 hours for this and it was worth the trip!

Of course, double-loop courses are never great, but this one really wasn't bad. Not quite as flat as I expected, but still a reasonably fast course. If you aren't from the area, running through these neighborhoods was a lot of fun. Loved the southern architecture. LSU was kinda ugly, but otherwise a fairly scenic course. The thing this race has going for it is the organization. Seemed perfect to me. Started on the dot, everything was marked well, shuttle system was flawless and not backed up at all, and lots of freebies. The slip-on 'shower shoes' at the end were ingenious!! Perfect answer for those swollen and tired marathon feet. And of course, the post-race food and beverages are totally unmatched anywhere. Great job folks!!

Delivers more than promises

Although this is well organized race on a relatively flat course, I wouldn't recommend it for a first-timer or someone who needs a lot of hand-holding. I had fun, even though I burned out on the second loop (MY fault, not the organizers') and my time was one of my slowest. Cons first: *This is a small, running-club affair. There is no expo, no rock 'n roll on the course, no glitz. I couldn't find any mention of the race in the local papers the day before or the day after. *Most people are running the half. There were plenty of water/aid tables and people staffing them on my first loop, but the second time around, there were some stations unstaffed (though they still had abundant fluids out). I had plenty of company on my first loop, but the second one was rather lonely. There was one place on the second loop where we had to cross the street and I had to stop and let cars pass first, then cross and run on the sidewalk of a railroad overpass. *No cash prizes, and ribbons given out as trophies.(This didn't bother me.) Pros: *All sorts of nice stuff not mentioned on website or flyer. Post-race refreshments included abundance of fresh fruit, water, sodas, "alligator piquant," gumbo, jambalaya, hot dogs, and pastries, all served up by some very friendly folks. (All of this for a modest fee, especially if you register early.) *I thought course was rather flat, though others complained of hills(?). Course is pretty, mostly in affluent neighborhoods decorated for holidays and on the LSU campus. *Shuttles to and from host hotel which were there when they said they'd be. Host hotel was great for the price, close to start/finish. If you want to do a Louisiana marathon, this will probably be cheaper than New Orleans, and if you don't expect a lot of glitz, you'll have a great time.

A good marathon; the event staff makes it better!

Running (literally) 30 minutes/four miles late, the event staff was unbelievably customer-friendly. The course is a great tour of Baton Rouge. If you like a mental challenge, this marathon is for you. Throughout the course, one could see and hear the finish, yet only to find oneself at mile 15 (citing one example). The pre- and post-race tech shirts are the best goodies by far, even compared to the high-profile marathons. Hard candy was fine, but would like to see food along the course. The Christmas fans added that special holiday touch.

Good race for any level of runner

This is a race put on by runners, for runners. From the minute you get to the packet pickup it's obvious the race director and volunteers are out to make this a great race. Seemed like a lot of 50 staters. Refreshments and food of all types available after the race. I'm not sure how to make this one any better. Not many spectators, but so what?

A diamond in the rough...

This to me was one of those races where you ask yourself, "Why don't more people do this race?" The race offered a convenient packet pick-up location the night before the race, great organization, an EXCEPTIONAL course and lightning fast results! The race also had great traffic control with well stocked aid stations. And goodies? LS technical t-shirt, short-sleeve tech. t-shirt, COOL socks and flip-flops... and GREAT finisher medals! This race should be on your "must-do" list!

Lots of fun but HILLY

I grew up in BR and I never remembered BR having this many hills! The only drawback is that the hills seemed to come in the 2nd part of the half-marathon, when I was most tired. Call me lazy. I really enjoyed the spectators clapping as we ran by. It was great motivation - it helped me to keep going. I don't eat meat so I couldn't partake in the warm food. Could they possibly serve hot cocoa so that we could have something warm after we run (especially the way it was - freezing!)? Enjoyed this race and would do it AGAIN.

Unique Race

A double-loop course will turn away a lot of runners, but this one is not so bad: two loops around the lake, through the LSU campus, and through tree-lined neighborhoods make it worthwhile. They need to close more of the roads we ran on, but otherwise the organization was great, including the gifts: two NICE race shirts, race socks, and slippers. And the cajun food for both the pre-race and post-race parties was delicious!

Southern hospitality at its best!

Incredible home cooked pre-race food--many goodies (sox, singlet, tech t-shirt)-- FRIENDLY PEOPLE!! Race day organization very good, water/sports drink stops adequate. Sunny, the humidity & temp climbed quite a bit during the race. Blew past the unmarked port-a-potties until near crisis at the start of the second loop. Pretty neighborhood/scenic LSU campus course, mostly flat, made for a fast time but very little crowd support. This is a small event that deserves to be bigger. The commitment and enthusiasm of the organizers is quite impressive. Post race awards/feast were outstanding. Thank you Baton Rouge for a fantastic marathon experience!

warm day, scenic course, 2nd loop trouble

December 3rd of 2005 was a warm day and I had a strained medial collateral ligament in the left knee so the usual fast course was slow for me at 4:57. I'm typicially under 4:00. The course was very scenic and the first time around with the 1/2 marathoners was good. The second loop was not. Temps had warmed, some aid stations became unmanned, no spectators at all, and I was nearly run over by a pickup truck going way too fast on a marathon course that was no longer marshaled very well. I had to argue with the driver about right of way. It was the closest I've ever come to being run over in a race or in training. A bike rider assisting another marathoner had to help me fend off the verbally abusive pickup driver. Much thanks to him. Accessories were nice, i.e., medal, shirts, socks. I'm a 50-stater so I probably won't be back anytime soon. I'm happy to have survived. My negativity comes mostly from the inconsiderate driver, unmanned aid stations and my strained ligament. I'm sure others' comments are more favorable.

A GREAT low volume marathon (only 500-600 runners)

2004 was my fourth time to run this marathon. I really liked the early Dec. run over the early Nov., date as it was much cooler than previous years. Also previously I complained about cheesy medals. In 2004 they came up with great looking medals (well done!). This is a nice flat course. If you are looking for a Saturday race this one is a must. Nice extras, two shirts, socks and gloves worth more than the money spent. The money was spread extremely well and hats off to a job well done. It is a double-loop course, and the support is weak on the second loop, but other than that, P-E-R-F-E-C-T.

Baton Rouge is Fast, Flat, and has Good Support!

Good marathon for first-timer or old-timer. Flat, flat race based on a double-loop. First loop is running with 1/2 marathoners which shrinks to a much narrower field at the 13.1 mile mark. While the course on paper looks like a nightmare, it was well marked and major intersections were well directed by police. Support was good, but restrooms were scarce - could use 2 more locations. 'Gator' gumbo at the end along with massage tent provided camaraderie and recovery. Thanks Baton Rouge, a run you should be proud of!

Beautiful, flat course.

I appreciated the volunteers... they were very encouraging. Some constructive feedback for those attending to the water stations is that they could be more prepared. A runner doesn't have time to stop while they open a package of cups and then pour the water. It's helpful if they are ready as the runners run by. In most cases, they were prepared.

Good Run, Great Food

Organizers of this race are extremely friendly and try to please. The course is flat with a fair number of curves but the scenery with the race around the lake and the surrounding homes make for a pleasant distraction. The pre-race dinner the night before the marathon is the best I have ever had; a little spicy, but hey, this is cajun country. The medals this year were awesome. The only drawback I found was one water station was unmanned on the second loop of the course. Overall I would give the organizers of the race an 'A' for effort and for providing a great course.

A 'B-' marathon, nice flat course

Nice flat course, good organization, perks are free marathon socks and shirt. I've run it 3 years and the medals are cheesy. This could use great improvement. Put the money you pay for socks into the medal! Little support from crowds even on the first loop. Watch out for the humidity if you are not used to it.

A great first time marathon

This was my first. It is a small run so you are more than likely going to be running alone. The course is flat and scenic; the LSU campus is nice. The spectators that were there after the first loop were supportive. Some even had water and sprayed water as you passed. Nicely organized. Baton Rouge is a great place to explore. Great low key marathon.

I set the course record in 2002 and think that this marathon is an excellent one. There weren't too many spectators, but the ones who were out there were great. Though I ran alone the entire race, it was fun cheering on the other runners on the second lap. If I still lived in the area I would do this marathon again.

Great course

The course was great and volunteers were good on the first loop. The water stations were empty of volunteers on the second loop (except for the great ones at mile 10), but water and Gatorade were there. There was very little spectator support on the first loop and none on the second. I'm still waiting on finish results to be posted 3 1/2 weeks later. The mental health awareness participants were a big plus. Kudos to the group.

Growing into a wonderful marathon

I ran this race in 2000, 2001 and 2003 and have run four other marathons to compare. This race is really growing. Starting out in 2000 with limited support, unmanned aid stations and finishing with a generic medal. 2003 was so much better. Support has grown -more aid stations - having aid stations staffed - better after-race party. Same course, better atmosphere.

Beautiful Fast Course.

This was a great course. We ran it in 2002. The weather was perfect and the course runs thru LSU and the neighborhoods. The course is double loop and is rather curvy, but the scenery is great.
The post-race massages and alligator were great. There was some confusion about the availability of a pasta dinner, we asked and they said no, we went and ate and came back and there was one.
The race promised a singlet and we were expecting a running material but it was cotton, would have preferred a t-shirt instead. The free socks were also great, and the finisher's medal was nice.
Also no real fan support so you will run mostly by yourself, but the fans that are there were great. Thanks to lady with the 'You Own The Road Sign'

It was a great first marathon for me!

This was my first marathon. Didn't experience the intimidation of 5,000+ runners...but on the flipside, you're pretty much running all by yourself. It was a small race, approx. 250 to 300 runners. It was a double loop. The spectators that you did see (mostly at the water stops) were a welcome sight (especially the water stop that had the Vaseline...I would have paid that guy $100 if he had asked me too!) The weather was great. I think I'm hooked! Houston was supposed to be my first marathon (in January)...I was glad I ran BR so I could get the 'jitters' out of the way and will be able to really enjoy Houston. Thanks to all of those who put on a great event.

Early Start, Flat Course

To clarify Minneapolis's comments, the course is 2 laps of the same loop. For those who want it, post-race beer is available. Conditions can brighten up and warm up in a hurry.

Small Race with Fun Spirit

2-loop course around Baton Rouge lakes / LSU campus; 1/2 marathon concurrent. Appx. 80 finishers in 1999. Early start might compel one to have both reflective vest and sunglasses available. Wacky entry form, but race organization not frivolous. Post-event food includes alligator meat and gumbo. Course essentially flat with one overpass (crossed twice). Moderate amount of parking next to start / finish if you get there reasonably early. Sufficient lodging within 10 min. Refreshments available during night-before packet pickup. Course not closed to traffic, but early start and monitoring are decent. Some company with other joggers and walkers, particularly in campus areas. Other than supporters for runners, half-marathoners, and staff/volunteers, there are few spectators. Goody bag, aid, and amenities not bad for a race this size.
