Small Town Race without the Small Town Charm

Pros: - Volunteers were fabulous. Well prepared and cheered us runners on. Local police manning traffic were diligent and kept us safe on the roads. - Expo was in & out. - Finisher medal was a cool design with the outline of the state. - Course map on MapMyRun. I was able to export & re-import into Strava, which was useful. Cons: - Warm water at the finish. By the end of the marathon, it was into the 70s and no cold water in sight. Please stock with ice next time. I ended up skipping water altogether until I got to the hotel. - Minimal spectators. Those that did show up, thank you for cheering us on. - Minimal promotion. This race would benefit from a better social media presence. Engage your runners to get them excited about the event. Engage the town to get them out on the streets to cheer us on. Green Bay seems like a great city and the race doesn't do anything to showcase what makes the town worthwhile. - Hate to say it, but Lambaeu Field was totally underwhelming. Cool to run around the field but they need to blast the music, put the runners on the jumbo tron, maybe get some Packers out there for high fives. It was just a jog through an empty stadium, no spectacle. Total missed opportunity. Appreciative of the supporters that were out but don't think I'll run this one again unless there are some improvements.

very uncooperative management

I did sign up for full marathon in 2019. Unfortunately, it rained overnight and next day morning the full marathon was cancelled, keeping only half marathon open. There was some water on marathon race track in second half of the course. There were good suggestions to keep keep full marathon on as well by having two laps on half marathon course, however, the management was very adamant and never considered our suggestion. The crown was very good and it was thrilling to run through the foot ball stadium, however, I wouldn't recommend to everyone before signing up for this event

Great event. Stadium too congested

Ran this as my Wisconsin race, overall I really enjoyed it. The weather was near perfect, which helped. My thoughts: - I liked the course. It highlighted some very nice areas and the Fox River trail was lovely. Aid stations were plentiful and Gu was available at 3 points. - Crowd support was spotty. Some areas were filled with people, other neighborhoods were ghost towns. I'd heard the half was better supported, however. - There are loads of hotels near Lambeau, as well as ample parking. Traveling in/out was a breeze. - Free beer and brats at the finish. I grabbed one of each and enjoyed them in the Lambeau bleachers while watching the runners come through. - The half starts an hour after the full. That made the start fantastic: no bathroom lines, and you could clearly hear instructions. However..... - The big problem with this race is the congestion inside Lambeau Field around mile 26. Thankfully I went into this race knowing I wouldn't be trying for a PR or BQ, but if I was....yikes. Last point: To anyone reading this: Please, please, please stay to the right and put away your headphones when you're running through congested areas. I yelled out 'on your left' so many times I lost count. And I did have to physically push my way past several people who were oblivious to the marathoners making their way through. All that said, I did enjoy this race. People were wonderful, it was well organized, and the course was flat and scenic. Just bank some time before heading into the stadium. As a football fan, Lambeau is a must see.

Pretty Darn Good Race - 1 Hugh Flaw

Pretty darn good race: - Excellent water stations - more than I have ever seen - Didn't care for color of shirt, but it is a nice quality Asics shirt - Having access to inside of stadium on a raining morning really bonus - Hotels were not outrageously priced And now the flaw. The half marathon started 1 hour after the full - this made the finish very very very congested. I LOVE half marathoners, but after running 26 miles I was in no mood to weave in and out of people 3 wide. I was looking forward to the stadium finish, but I could not enjoy it because there were so many runners. I felt like a jerk yelling 'excuse me' and to your 'left,' but I was trying for a specific goal. All runners should be able to enjoy the finish. Would be much better if they started half and full runners at the same time. In the end, fast and flat course and managed a BQ.

Not Just for Cheeseheads

INTRODUCTION: I am a race-walker with a median marathon completion time of 5:17:21. The Cellcom Green Bay Marathon was my thirty-ninth 26.2-miler accomplished. COURSE: It was going to be a warm day for a marathon: weather conditions at start time were 58 degrees, 78 percent relative humidity, fair, and wind from the NE at 7 mph. We started the first of five similar-distanced segments on this mostly flat course on Lombardi Avenue, adjacent to Lambeau Field, home of the Green Bay Packers football team, heading east. Having just passed the National Railroad Museum at mile 2, we were running parallel to the west bank of the Fox River, heading south on South Broadway Street in the village of Ashwaubenon. Later on, between miles 3 and 4, South Broadway Street turned into Fort Howard Drive when we entered into the city of DePere. We soon turned eastward and crossed over the Fox River between miles 5 and 6. The second segment led us through downtown DePere and some of its historic neighborhoods, where we benefitted from the shade provided by the tree-lined avenues. Upon reaching the newer neighborhoods to the south, we became exposed to the sun and warmer temperatures. At mile 10, we reached our southernmost point of the course before entering the Fox River Trail. The third segment, a six-plus mile trek on the paved Fox River Trail from south (DePere) to north (Green Bay by way of Allouez), was by far the most scenic and quietest of the course. Once again we benefitted from the shade provided by the trees overhead, and occasionally we not only had glimpses of the Fox River, but also our ultimate destination, Lambeau Field, to the northwest. Upon leaving the Fox River Trail near mile 16.5, we began our fourth segment headed east on a slight incline up Crooks Street to its dead end at the East River Trail, heading north until reaching East High School, home of the original Green Bay Packers stadium, City Field, where we took a lap on its track before heading west at mile 19. (Can you imagine NFL games being played at a high school? Such was the case for the Packers until 1956.) We entered downtown Green Bay, passing by city hall at mile 20, before one final riverside pass and then crossing back over the Fox River before mile 21. Our final segment, upon disembarking the Dousman Street bridge, took us past the train depot where the Packers once began and completed their road trips. It is now home of the Titletown Brewing Company. (Try the Mac and Cheese Pizza and the Dark Helmet Schwarzbier for a unique carbohydrate-loading pre-marathon dinner.) We then generally headed south and west to our ultimate destination. When we reached Lambeau Field near the 25.5 mile mark, we were obliged to take our well-earned victory lap around the perimeter of the football field before crossing the finish line just outside the stadium. Weather conditions at finish time were 74 degrees, 40 percent relative humidity, fair, and wind from the SE at 6 mph. ORGANIZATION: Well organized expo situated inside the Lambeau Field Atrium. While there, consider taking one of the two Lambeau Field Stadium Tours; doing so will help you get a better idea of what this town and marathon is all about. Good course and traffic support until reaching the final segment of the race on the west side of town, where we started having to look out for automobiles being driven on the course, apparently with the blessing of the local police. After six hours, when race conditions turned red, the cops abandoned the busy Gross Avenue intersection at Lombardi Avenue just past mile 24. Tortoise runners were obliged to wait until the traffic light turned green for them to continue on with their marathon. SPECTATORS: Average for a marathon of this size; no bands performed on the race course. CONCLUSION: With an estimated 2015 population of 105,207; this 283rd largest city in the United States would be as anonymous as similar sized Tyler, Texas or Lakeland, Florida but for one thing. Because it is home to the only non-profit, community owned US major league professional sport franchise, one that has endured against significant odds in its 97 year history, it is a city that is like no other, and The Cellcom, as the locals call it, gives us the opportunity to appreciate what it is all about.

Fun race at iconic venue

Course is fairly flat, no real hills just a few slight uphill grades. Expo, start and finish are held at the stadium which if you are GB Packers fan is great. Ran with a pace group and the two pacers were very helpful with course tips and they kept our spirits up the whole race. Lots of aid stations about every 1 and 1/2 miles. It got quite warm at the end but the aid stations were well placed. Stayed at one of the recommended hotels and used the bus provided. Getting to the race was fine, but the driver of our bus getting back didn't follow the published schedule so we ended up using Uber to get back to the hotel.

wonderful spirit in Green Bay

On a hot, humid day, the volunteers and spectators made it worth running through the heat. The course is almost completely flat and the scenery is diverse, with a range of residential, riverfront, and industrial settings. Just when things start to get a little boring, the Packer stadiums (old and new) add spice to the race. I'm a lifelong Chicago Bears fan, but even I stayed motivated knowing that a lap around Lambeau awaited me near the end of the race. The spectators weren't huge in number, but they made up for it in spirit and creativity. The motivational signs were wonderful and funny and keg beer was available at two different private houses along the course (way to go, Green Bay). Excellent logistics (parking and packet-pick-up are a breeze). Of the six marathons I've run, Green Bay is my favorite. This marathon really was fun.

Perfect logistics and Lambeau field

Exemplary logistics in every way. Plenty of gatorade/water on the course and three well staffed gu points helped with a hot/humid day. Corral system worked well. Lambeau field focal point a real plus. Food was plentiful and no wait, usually the half marathoners pick it pretty clean. Course was pretty flat with a few long but not steep sections. I thought there would be more spectators given the good weather but they were very enthusiastic. The only negative to me was the finisher shirt. I was looking for a Green Bay Packer green & gold shirt in line with the city known for its NFL team and the Lambeau Field venue. But maroon??

Smaller than I expected

I got a fever the night before this race and started anyway, then had to drop out at mile 14. This wasn't the fault of the race, of course, but it means I saw how their medical was organized and also saw the race in progress. The course is good - it's pretty flat but it's along the Fox River so there are some rolling hills and a couple river crossings to keep it from getting too monotonous. There's a *lot* of concrete - more than I expected and more than I'd like. A long stretch of the race is on a paved recreation trail, which is very nice and scenic, as well as a welcome break for the feet. Crowd support is excellent - the course is lined with spectators in the city parts, and there are big pockets of fans cheering along the trail part. The race is much smaller than I expected - it certainly felt much smaller than Fargo, for example, which I thought was a comparable race. My pace of 7:10 meant that I spent most of the time until I dropped out running with just a couple other people around me, and there were stretches where I was by myself. The fastest pacer was only 3:15, and my pace is generally a mid-pack pace at other races. I think the focus - and participation - is mostly at the half marathon. Aid stations have powerade then water, which is a must for me since I like to take a small amount of carb but wash its stickiness out. To the meat though: with a fever the night before, my race was undermined and I hit the wall at mile 13, dropping rather than suffering a death march at mile 14. This is the only race of any length I've dropped out of, and it hit me really hard. On the good side, the medical staff at mile 14 were phenomenal, getting me hydrated and carbed, talking me through what had just happened, and keeping me warm during the *LONG* wait for the shuttle to the finish. On the bad side, the shuttle took over an *HOUR* to get me, while I sat there getting colder and colder, to the worry of the medical staff who were watching me. When the shuttle finally came, it dropped me and its other two passengers on the wrong side of the racers passing mile 25, and gave us the wrong directions. We ended up walking the last mile of the course, crossing the finish line. Oddly enough, even though I was scanned as 'DNF' by the medical staff at mile 14, the race still claims I finished, based on my crossing of the finish line. So they have some organizational issues there. Finally, my wife says that other than the excellent on-course medical staff letting me call her with their phones, she wouldn't have been able to find out what had happened since the medical tent at the end kept sending her away and refusing to tell her anything. Apparently their electronic system for reporting medical issues wasn't quite synced with the staff. All in all, I may choose to try this course again when I'm not sick, but it struck me as a good, but not a destination, marathon.

Great Wisconsin Choice for 50 Stater!

Top 10 Reasons to Run Green Bay: 1) Mile 25.7 is a lap inside Lambeau Field 2) Easy pre and post race logistics - parking, reuniting with family. Family gets to watch you run your Lambeau Lap from the stands. 3) Pancake flat course 4) Expo in atrium of Lambeau Field 5) Miles 10-16 are on a beautiful, scenic river bike trail 6) To bear witness to the fact that THE tallest structure in all of Green Bay is, of course,...Lambeau Field 7) Awesome Finisher's Medal - a 3 dimensional football that spins! 8) A lap around City Field the 1950's home of the Packers 9) More GU than I've ever been offered in a marathon! 10) Although you may not feel up to it at Mile 25.7, you can certainly attempt a Lambeau Leap into your adoring fan's arms - but occuring as it were at Mile 25.7, the maximum vertical most of could muster was only about 2 inches!

A must-do marathon!

This was my 37th different marathon. It was one of my favorites! My top 10 PRO comments: 1. Great experience to start/finish and lap around inside Lambeau field. 2. Beautiful medal. 3. Interesting and diverse course, show- casing a lot of different aspects of the area like the Fox River trail and the old City Stadium, etc. 4. Aid stations were consistent and you could see them from afar, thanks to the giant flags. 5. The full started an hour before the half and we did not merge with them until the very end. No course congestion until the last mile! 6. Excellent band at the post race finish. The finish area was really enjoyable. 7. Whoever sang the national anthem at the starthe had a beautiful voice. Very touching way to start the race. 8. The expo was nice, being in the atrium at Lambeau field. They could have used more vendors, but it was fine. 9. The race tech top is a women's cut and fits nicelythey allowed me to change to another size too. 10. All of the people of Green Bay on the course were wonderful with huge hearts! Loved the people of Green Bay! It's hard to find anything to be critical about. The last mile was messy with the merge of the half and running into Lambeau with entire relay teams along a narrow path, but it was short and the loop inside Lambeau was so worth it. I would have preferred the finish line to have had a separate section to the left or right for the full only.

Excellent experience!

This was my second marathon and I have to say that I was not disappointed one bit. The volunteers and organizers did a fantastic job making things run smoothly. The course was great! I enjoyed running along the Fox River, seeing the surrounding towns, and doing a 'Lambeau Lap' The pacer that I ran with, Tim, was incredible. All of his splits were spot on. I can't forget to mention the weather; it was perfect! A+ marathon!

Great experience

My first GB marathon. Course is flat and fast. I really like the course - it winds enough and takes you on roads, trails, around a track, through Lambeau, and more. Very well organized -great volunteers and friendly. Not a whole lot of spectators in the middle, but those who were out were great! Just a great all around experience.

If you run WI, run Green Bay!

This was state #33 and it did not disappoint. I was debating between running Lakefront in Milwaukee or this race and I am very glad that I picked Green Bay. When else are you able to run around Lambeau Field? Plus we ran around the track at City Stadium which was the home of the Packers before Lambeau. The course was flat and it is a great PR course. If you are debating on which marathon in Wisconsin to run, go ahead and sign up for Green Bay. You will not regret it! I loved the small town feel to the race as well. I loved the fact that the marathon had its own start and course. We didn't see the half marathoners until the finish which is one of my negative comments below. I have 2 negative comments. 1) The congestion once we came back together with the half marathoners was a fiasco. There were so many people running through the tunnel onto Lambeau field that I had to literally stop running and try to pass people. I wasn't trying to PR but I bet I lost 2 minutes with the amount of people. 2)The lines for the beer/rootbeer/brats were super long and we didn't even stick around because it would have taken forever to get my rootbeer and brat. A little disappointing that there was not food in the finishers chute between the buses. This would have been much more controllable than the amount of people trying to get food and beer with all the spectators. But don't let those 2 issues stop you from running Green Bay. And if you have kids, sign them up for the kids race on Saturday. It was a ton of fun for them.

This is a well organized race.

This race was well organized from start to finish. The information was always up to date on the website and in E-mails. The volunteers were so enthusiastic. The course is very well marked and really nice as it rolls between Green Bay neighborhoods and along the Fox River. The pace group I was in was excellent. Thanks Ann and Theon! The final lap around Lambeau Field was euphoric (well, you need to be a Packer fan to appreciate that one.) My only complaint was the lack of showers after the race made it difficult for out of town runners who needed to leave after the race. It seemed odd what with a NFL facility that caters to roughly 200 athletes on any given Sunday in the fall looming in the background.

Awesome!!

This small marathon focuses mostly on the half marathon. After the full and half split, the course feels a little lonely for a few miles. When it approaches DePere, the spectator support picks up a bit. It is a flat, fast marathon with one noticeable hill at about mile 8. This is a wonderful moderate sized marathon. The people of Green Bay are great. Residents set up sound systems in their yards during the quieter sections of the course. Some had sprinklers out, which was nice because 2013 was another warm one. If you decide to run this one, book a hotel the same day. Hotels fill up quickly.

Thanks to the Packers for their support...

Being from Wisconsin, this was a homecoming of sorts and the folks in GB put on a nice event. I don't believe this would be a successful event without the Packers allowing the runners to finish at Lambeau and use the atrium for a very good expo. For a race this size the parking and logistics are fantastic, and the only negatives were finding a hotel in the area and lousy post-race food. But it's the best option for a Wisconsin marathon as a 50-stater.

Fantastic race!

I was blown away by what a well-run, perfect race this was. I have many compliments - the expo was efficient and had lots to do, the pre-race period was easy to navigate, the course was beautiful, challenging enough, and well-supported, and the post-race festivities were great. I was most impressed with the volunteers. This was my eighth marathon, and I've never run one that included so many friendly people. The encouragement that they all offered made all the difference in the world. The only negatives that I can think of (and there aren't many) miles 12-16 are kind of dull (but not terrible), the merger with the half entering Lambeau is a bit tricky to navigate, there wasn't a ton in the way of post-race food (unless your stomach, unlike mine, can handle a beer and a brat post-race). On the whole, I can't recommend this race enough! By far my favorite mid-size marathon.

Bad First Marathon Experience

This was a disaster of a first marathon experience. I won't belabor all the issues of why the race was cancelled, if it should have been cancelled at all, or who the blame belongs to in the cancellation. What I will say is that for all of the alleged extra pre-race precautions that were put into place, it was obvious that there was no clear-cut cancellation plan, and everything was a mess as a result. What this race has going for it is a great small-town feel. The first few miles were packed with spectators, which I thought was impressive for 7 am on a hot and humid morning. I thought the expo in the Lambeau Field Atrium was also done very well, and there were more vendors than I expected for a race this size. I also liked receiving a weekly 'first-timers' email. While they didn't always teach me something about training or provide inspiration, it was a nice touch. A major problem for this race (and I see that many others have already posted about this) is that it's definitely focused on the half marathon. The full marathon is almost an afterthought; as soon as you separate from the half runners, the full course was dead for several miles. I'm sure there were more spectators and support further along the course, but alas, I was forced to stop running. I don't see myself running this race ever again, as long as this debacle remains unresolved. I would consider running next year if we received a refund towards registration (similar to what the Madison Marathon did a week later), or if the race director handed off responsibility to someone else. I don't blame him for canceling the race - I think it was the safe call in that situation. But after this and 2011's too long course, I think it's time for a change in leadership to repair the tarnished image of this race.

Green Bay Marathon is a Waste of Your Time

The race was cancelled at 9:35am, except the race director did not have an official race cancellation policy in place. Some people were forcibly removed from the course while others were encouraged to finish. No one received official finishing times except the top 4 men. This race and this race director are a joke. I have never in 17 marathons experienced something so poorly managed. I learned last year that the course was 1/2 mile long! This is a local Half Marathon that allows the locals to run through Lambeau Field. Don't waste your time, your money, or your training on this horrible event.

Don't Bother

Locking the gate at mile 26 was such a poor decision that this race director should seriously consider handing the race over to someone else next year so as to bring confidence back to those planning to run this race. With the amount of marathons being cancelled in recent years due to heat, he should have had a more concise plan (like a cutoff at mile 17, for example). It's a shame really; the community does a great job supporting the runners. It's apparent that the director has likely never run a marathon.

Love this race.....

Like everyone else, I'm disappointed by what happened with the weather. I got the news at mile 18, but felt good enough to continue and eventually completed the course. This race, even this year with the problems it had, has always had a very welcoming feel. My first CGB marathon was in 2003 and I return nearly every year for this race, from my home in Alaska and now California to run. It is a reasonably small marathon but has all the amenities of the larger races, such as a pasta dinner and expo. If anyone was responsible for the problems with this year's race, it was the inexperienced runners that didn't heed the warnings their bodies were giving. I changed my goal from 'a BQ' to 'finish at Lambeau rather than the hospital'. If more runners had done the same, the race would have probably gone off just fine.

Choose another marathon

The pre-race organization was great and the expo and pasta dinner were convenient to the hotels. The volunteers and fans were just great. There were not a lot of fans for the second half of the marathon. My issue is with how the cancellation was handled. The race director sent out an email earlier in the week addressing the warm weather forecast saying they added additional water stops for a total of 22, which is outstanding. They also were going to have ice at some of the stops and ice baths at the finish. Why not have a cancellation policy like Madison used a week later? It would have saved me a lot of money in air and hotel if it was cancelled on Friday. I was at about mile 22 when volunteers said the race was cancelled. I was told I could wait for a bus to come if I wanted. No one said that times were not going to count as I asked a couple volunteers. So of course I was going to finish the race since I made it that far. I paced myself, took in extra fluids at each stop, stretched a bit. It was hot but not unbearable. I had to climb over the railing to get into the finishing area and I did get a chip time finish. (I would have qualified for Boston but I know they can't count some times and not others) If the race director was so concerned about the runners safety, pick up the timing mats. Make them want to stop. Block the course off with police cars. I understand it's a tough decision and that either way would be scrutinized. I just feel the on course communication was poor and that better options could have been put into action. They had all week to come up with contingency plans and this was the best they could do? Why not stop the marathon for runners that had not hit x mile marker by y time? That is how they handle the time limit for slower runners/walkers. The half marathoners are what overwhelmed the medical staff, but the better prepared marathoners should not have been punished. As I walked to the hotel after the race about 4 hours after the start, there were about 10 ambulances just sitting in line waiting around. The doctor at the hospital said they were not overwhelmed. All in all, a frustrating event that could have been planned better. The people of Green Bay were great, especially the volunteers and I'd like to thank them. I would not consider this race again, especially after last years course being too long.

Half Marathoners Heat Casulties Derail Marathon?

Thank you to all the Green Bay volunteers and spectators. Even though the marathon was cancelled midrace, the aid stations, marshals and police stayed in position to support those like me that chose to ignore the directions to stop and wait for buses to take you back to Lambeau Field and continue on to finish the race. Looks like I just missed the police car roadblock on the De Pere recreational path at 18 miles when the race was called off. Though some race officials were yelling for you to stop, the other volunteers happily passed you hydration, and cheered you on. The extra water stations and ice they set up for the predicted hot day worked for me. All those lawn sprinklers the citizens of Green Bay brought out were a life saver. THANK YOU! Race course is fairly flat with a couple of hills just to keep it interesting. Some beautiful neighbourhoods, fortunately with a decent green canopy to shade us. A couple of so so industrial areas, but hey it's a 26.2 mile route in a city area of just over 300,000. Nice section of recreational trail for mile 17 to 22 My theory of the marathon race cancellation was due to medical being overwhelming by heat injuries from the half marathoners. The bulk of the half marathoners were arriving and dropping at the finish line just shortly before the medical director pulled the plug on the full marathon race. Looking at the news reports online, it seems it was just half marathoners in the medical tent and being taken away in the ambulances. There were 7,000 in the half and 1,500 in the full so no matter the casualty rate of the half would be quite bigger no matter. Half Marathon I assume are mostly less experienced runners than full marathoners, and my opinion is that full marathoners pace themselves better. When I finished in just over four hours, I passed a line of a dozen empty ambulances near the finish line. For me the heat wasn't any worst than what I went through before at the Maui Marathon and the Sunburst Marathon in South Bend, Indiana that happens in June. I never felt I was in danger of any heat injuries. There were definitely more marathoners walking than running in the last third of the race, but thats a sensible thing in the hot weather we had. Plus knowing we weren't running an official race took the sail out of a lot of runners. No more than the usually amount of marathoners doing the survival shuffle and off to the side calf or hamstring stretch. They did keep the finish line open, so I got my medal and unofficial finishing photos, but the race clocks were turned off. Got an email from the race about 'Green Bay Results & Offers.' Kind of a slap in the face as only the top elite athletes got results and the rest of the email was an ad link to the sponsors. Plus we didn't get to do the Lambeau Lap around the football field this year due to construction at Lambeau. Consensus from my running buddies is to count this race in my 50 State Marathon total. So I will check off that I have done Green Bay Marathon and Wisconsin. Maybe one year I will return to make it official and do my Lambeau Lap.

2012 cancelation was a disaster

This was to be my 7th running of the Cellcom Green Bay Marathon and though it was inclement weather (unseasonable hot), it was not unbearable. To say the least, it was disappointing to be stopped at mile 18, just when the shady part of the course and breeze picked up. I agree with the other comments that this is a half-marathon race, a community event. People in the community, runners or not, are encouraged to do the half or the relay. It always has many less runners, spectators the 2nd half. I always enjoyed that part. However, this year, the half-marathon was a detriment. They said medical resources were used up by 9:30am, just when the full marathoners were kicking it in to finish the race. I felt the race director made a bad call to cancel the race instead of giving the option to take the shuttles to the finish. The way it was presented, water stations were being shut down immediately and we had to take the shuttles to the finish line. The runner tracking has always been a great thing about this race, being sponsored by a cell phone company...but then the race got canceled. My husband and friends tracking me thought the worst when they just stopped getting texts with no explanation! My family at the finish line said there was not a lot of explanation there either. The clock simply turned off and they waited an hour for me to get back by taking the shuttle. I also heard those that tried to finish were blocked off from doing so. All in all, it was a mess. When the weather is good in GB in the spring, it has been great running...I did sub-3:45 twice. One year I wore gloves for half the race. However, last year the weather was horrible, really windy, and this year with the heat...You really can't plan for the weather in this one! After what happened this year, I wouldn't recommend this race. I never thought someone would tell me I couldn't finish a marathon. It's a terrible feeling, especially if you spend time, money and think about the training it took to get there.

Yet another race cancelled mid-stream.............

As a runner for over 30 years, over 150 marathons and 50 ultramarathons, I see two problems with todays environment. First, there are way too many people participating that don't have a clue about running in a marathon. They jump into a race just because 'a friend did one' or 'I've done a half, I can do a marathon' without the proper training and understanding of what 26.2 miles feels like. This is a recipe for disaster. Second, once the Chicago Marathon got everyone running scared regarding race conditions it has become more and more common for races to opt out their committment to runners. Numerous serious, experienced runners come from long distances and spend big bucks to support the race organization so it seems only fair that race organizers permit those desirous of finishing to proceed at their own caution.

A wasted run

Serious runners shouldn't bother. It could be a great race with a special stadium finish but it is an embarassment to a great city instead. There are plenty of other better choices. Race organizers were not prepared for the 80 degree heat despite it being forecast for days. Ice water shortages etc. Due to their incompetence they chose to cancel the race partway through. A decision that was communicated unclearly to the runners. To make matters worse for runners that were well trained and prepared to deal with the heat they gated off the finish line. Unacceptable! The fit prepared runners that can handle the heat should not be robbed due to bad planning and a lot of out of shape runners that should know their limits and not start the race. After the course being long last year don't give this race another chance. Who knows what they might do next year.

Skip This One

This is a half marathon event with another, pretty boring loop thrown in for full marathoners. The half course did have great spectator support, was hilly and there was shade. There was little shade, spectators or anything at all interesting to run by in the last half of the marathon. They 'kind of, sort of' cancelled the race, in progress. Police were telling people the clocks were stopped, the course was closed and to wait for busses. There were no busses to be seen and I was already 21 miles in. I finished, having to hop a barrier at Lambeau to find my my to the end. Very poor execution. I also wonder why they wouldn't let people park at Lambeau, since 'construction' there was inside, and there seemed to be thousands of parking spaces unused. I had to get a cab back to the hotel, since the shuttles were eventually put out on the course picking up runners. There's not much to see in Green Bay, the course was a snoozer and the way the 'cancellation' was handled was a joke. I won't be back.

Loved the support - I will be back.

It is unfortunate that the race had to be called this year due to the heat but after watching several runners collapse, I agree with the decision. I was very impressed with the support and coordination. After running St. Louis earlier this year, I thought the course was relatively flat and fast. - Great Expo - Great post run party - Plenty of water stops and porto-potties - Nice medal - Great FaceBook updates leading up to the race - Plan your lodging early if you want a decent hotel.

Never again in Green Bay!

Regarding future discounts for next years marathon, the RD says that 'we {the runners}just don't understand the economics of the race'. Maybe the RD does not understand the runners economics. A 2 day drive from Florida and 3 nights at the Green Bay hotel at $135 a night plus other costs. Another myth the RD has is the FLAT course, the first half is not flat and that was as far as i got before they stopped me. The money really is in the half marathon and that is all this race is, don't waste your money on this full, there are to many better marathons around. If no runners show up in the future maybe the RD will really understand economics.

Agree with Previous poster

This would be a fun half marathon. If you are traveling any distance at all I would look for another city for the full. If I could rate the voluntees it would be 5 stars. Great job for an otherwise bad situation. The volunteers saved the day.

Waste of time and money

This was my first time running the Green Bay half and for a race i was really looking forward to I was sorely disappointed. Despite the unbearable heat, I finished in 2:39, but was given no finishing time since they 'officially' cancelled the race at 2:35. Really? It's a slap in the face to those who worked hard on a hot day. The race wasn't very scenic and overall disorganized. I wouldn't recommend it.

Choose another Marathon

Pulling the plug on the whole race was the wrong decision. I was at mile 22 when I was told the race had been called off. I was on pace to BQ with a minute to spare. I ran the rest of the way to near the finish line only to find the finish line gated off and the clock turned off. My race ended for me at 26.14 miles. No finish line, no results, no photos, no cheering family, my first BQ robbed from me. It is like it never happened. The woman who placed 5th finished behind me and got a finish time. The RD should have stopped the race based upon the mile maker say mile 16 and before. That would have allowed the more conditioned runners to complete the course freeing up resources to focus on those runners. He knew it was going to be warm he and should have had a multiple staged plan together. Imagine the guy who was at mile 25 who had the plug pulled on him. When you signup for a race and training months for it, you are putting your faith and confidence in the organizers. I can't recommend that other runners put your trust in the organizers.

Half-marathon in marathon clothing

Let me begin by saying the volunteer support was very good. 4-5 stars there, had there been a ranking. But ... I'm still a marathon newbie, but I've been running for more than 25 years, and I think G.P. hit the nail on the head. It is readily apparent this event is all about the half-marathon not just in numbers, but in how the heat-related mid-race 'cancellation' was carried out. A police officer told me at Mile 19 that the race was closed and that I wouldn't be getting an official time. I was well ahead of a BQ pace at the time, but the news knocked the wind out of my sail. Yet I continued to the 'finish,' as did every other runner around me, only to cross the finish five minutes before the awards ceremony for the half-marathon. Then the Monday morning newspaper followed up with finishing times for most who ran the half, and news about them keeping the course open for the top 5 marathon finishers in each category, but no others. As G.P. said, what a slap in the face particularly for those of us who finished the 26.2 as water stations were being shuttered. If the race was going to be canceled, the whole doggone thing should've been half-marathoners, elite, everybody. Going through with the half-marathon awards ceremony was very bad form. Sorry, Green Bay, won't be back. Will head to Fargo instead next year.

We need the finished record.

With my friend, who finished the entire course for the record. Whoever crossed the finish line should claim their own record. However, I deeply appreciate the water station volunteers and spectators. They gave me a strength to stay on the race!!

This should be renamed the Green Bay HALF Marathon

My rating of this event has nothing to do with the fact that it was cancelled mid-race(I do however disagree with that decision). For any serious marathoner, I would consider finding a different race. This is basically a half-marathon event with a full option. 7000 people in the half, 1500 in the full. After the point where the 2 split off (a bit after mile 12) crowd support is sparse. I was also very unimpressed with the course. Not scenic at all and not much shade overall. It is not spectator friendly unless by foot. Pretty much the last time your friends and family can see you is mile 12. Assuming they want to see you finish, there isn't really anywhere else they can spectate from unless they are on bike. Also, don't be fooled. The course is not as flat as advertised. The volunteer and race support was very well done. Plenty of water, Gatorade and GU on the course and an adequate number of volunteers manning each station. As far as the race being cancelled, with the exception of getting the runners back to the finish line, everything around that was handled very poorly. Getting pulled off the course was one thing, but then being bused back to the finish area to be surrounded by thousands of people that had finished the half marathon and were celebrating their accomplishment, as well as the half marathon awards ceremony was a complete slap in the face.

Awesome

It was an unfortunate and unusual day in May that the temp was so high. I picked GB this year in hopes of a cool marathon since Grandma's is usually hot. I have never seen such response to a hot marathon. Big kudos to the race director. There were water stops every mile with plenty of ice, gatorade and water. Thanks to all the volunteers who came out to man the stations. The course was flat. Easy to get to expo and start. There were three places with GU which doesn't happen often in a marathon. It was a big disappointment the race had to be canceled but also understandable in the conditions. I definately will come back again.

2012 Green Bay Marathon was horrible.

The 2012 Green Bay Marathon was canceled due to poor planning. When a marathon is canceled and runners are urged to stop running some runners will refuse. The runners that do finish the race after the marathon is canceled should have been given unofficial times. Everyone that finished after 2 hrs 35 min don't have a finish time cause the marathon was caceled. The clock should not have been stoped until the official time. I wasted $100 for the entry fee. Columbia City Indiana Veteran's Marathon and Chicago Marathon are both way better than Green Bay in different ways.

Super flat course. Would run again!

Good: 1) Really nice course - flat, great for a PR (which I did, despite the wind). 2) A big-feel marathon without the huge crowds/big-marathon hassles. 3) Could use the bathroom with minimal wait times (about 10 minutes) prior to the race. 4) Well stocked water stations with volunteers who knew what they were doing. 5) Really nice finisher medal. 6) Nice post-race food/drink/support. 7) The locals all come out to cheer you on, especially in the early miles. Thanks, Green Bay. 8) Ample parking/no hassles getting to the race start (took hotel shuttle). Bad: 1) Course was long this year - but they admitted it and adjusted times. Good to see them do this. 2) T-shirt given at the end. I am tired, dehydrated and cold - last thing I want is another thing to carry. Would've been nice to get this at the expo, especially if I were injured or weren't running but had registered. 3) Crowd support was a little sparse after 13 miles. 4) Hard to enjoy running through Lambeau after putting in nearly 26 miles. Would definitely do this marathon again and would recommend this race to others for a high-quality event.

Overall Outstanding!!

This was my first marathon ever and I could not have asked for a more positive experience all around!! The first-timer newsletters were inspiring, informative, motivating and the perfect way to get pumped up! :) I even emailed one of the contact people to ask about an injury I had in my 16th week of training. They helped me calm down and understand that it's okay to take some time off, even a few weeks before the race. The fans and volunteers were UNBELIEVABLE. I never felt like I was alone and there was ALWAYS someone cheering us on! Water and Gatorade every 1.5 miles (perfect!) and root-beer, GU, and treats as well! The volunteers were so helpful at the end and throughout the expo and days leading up to the race. AWESOME t-shirts and medals. I could not be happier with my first time marathon experience, and I will definitely be back again!

Good Fans, Very Good Course, Great Organization

I ran the 1/2 back in 2006 and ran the full this year, 2011. Overall thoughts on the 2011 edition. The Good: Excellent value. Hotels are affordable, cost of registration with shirt and pasta dinner/beer included make this a good value race. Top level organization. From the expo inside Lambeau Field, pasta dinner, bus shuttles for runners for pre-race pick-up and post race delivery back to your hotel is great., a nice perk! The water stops, GU stops, and aid stations on the course were plentiful and well stocked and had very, VERY enthusiastic volunteers. Volunteers. A very festive, loud, enthusiastic group that were everywhere and helpful. Volunteers make this a GREAT runner experience. Post-race The finishing run through Lambeau is nice, not a Packer fan but still nice, the set-up in the parking lot with food, beer, brat's, band, award ceremony, etc., make for a fun and festive atmosphere. Areas to improve: If you are gonna give the tech shirt away at the finish with your medal, then add Finisher to the shirt. If not, put it in the bag at expo and make it simple. Course: A bit twisty in some sections of the course that make it harder to improve splits. This year does not really apply to this issue because we had 40+ mph headwinds from miles 15-22, so this was a KILLER, just brutal. Overall a very well organized, executed, and fun race to run and I recommend it to those in the MW looking for a spring marathon, or those looking at Wiscy for a 50 stater. Madison in late May is also a nice race as I ran it back in 2010. Photography: I got a lot of really nice shots throughout the race, but my friend who finished maybe 10 minutes after me, did not get a good shot at the Finish with the clock, little thing but when you are looking for that nice photo for the wall, having the picture with your time is a nice and necessary touch.

Good Course...Bad Shirt

The course was relatively flat (a few rolling hills early and one nasty bridge at mile 15-ish) and despite the 40mph wind gusts I took 27 minutes off of my PR! Water stations were well-staffed and extremely well-organized. The lap through Lambeau was a little uninspiring due to lack of spectator support and Elton John's 'Rocket Man' playing over the PA system, but the finish area made up for it...wall to wall people screaming their heads off. My only real criticisms are the disorganized food area after the race (I'm not interested in fighting the general masses for the food, nor do I want to stand in 3 separate lines for fruit, a bagel and a beer) and the they need to realize that very small women run these races. My only option for a tshirt was a men's medium or extra large! Needless to say, I won't be wearing the shirt!

Fun day even with 40mph wind gusts

Previous comments - completely agree. On this day because of the strong north wind you needed a strategy to run that was complicated even more by the extra length of course after mile 3 and the lack of mile markers. I ran with a pace group that was using gps and it was confusing given the course markers were off nearly .20. I have never ran into or against wind this strong in a race, initially occurring over the bridge in DePere where runners were belted sideways and head on immediately upon entering the Fox River trail. Personally I did great until I was unable to tuck in with the pace group and literally got blown backwards. I think my next mile pace was nearly a minute slower and then pretty much the same for the next 5 plus miles. With that said, The course is great and can easily be a PR for many. Since the half marathon is quite larger and is run simultaneously I would hope in the future they get separated somehow. The Lambeau lap is great fun especially for a Packer fan. For an early season marathon in the Midwest this is the best!

Great course with excellent support

The course has a few rolling hills in the beginning, the last 16 are flat. You tour the city and surrounding areas. Support is excellent. Start is at Lambeau so you don't have to use porta-potties. Crowd support is just ok.

Wind in my face

The Good: 1) Fast course. A few rolling hills in the early neighborhood. Lots of straightaways. Long, flat portions of the course along the river. A good PR course. 2) Very organized. From the expo to the start and finish. A low-stress race. 3) Race crowd size. The number of participants seemed perfect. Not too many so you felt cramped but enough around that you never felt alone. 4) Less expensive than most marathons. Cheaper entry fee and hotels than most. 5) Water stops. Lots of them. 6) Volunteers and people of Green Bay. Very friendly and helpful everywhere I went. 7) Cool medal. The Bad: 1) The wind. Can't control this. 2) Course was 800 feet too long. Oops, but at least they admitted their mistake quickly and adjusted our times. 3) Miles not marked clearly. Was never sure when I hit any mile and no electronic timers on the course (not really that big of deal to me). Overall: One of the best marathons I've run. I would do this one again in a heartbeat. Great volunteers. Low-stress marathon. Easy to get around town. Very impressed and would highly recommend this marathon.

Great race - even if a bit windy..

This is my fourth marathon, and Green Bay (even 7 hours away from house) is likely going to be one of my favorites. This is not only due to the fact I PR'ed by 11 minutes or the run through Lambeau, but both certainly helped. The course was an interesting mix of residential and trail. The course was also extremely spectator-friendly. My wife was able to drive the course and support my run easily. I highly recommend this marathon.

Wonderful Race; I'll Be Back

I loved this race. Despite the wind, the course was flat and fast and much of it was quite scenic, which I didn't expect. People were friendly and fluid stations were well situated and well-stocked. Running through Lambeau was an emotional, unique experience. We stayed at the Hotel Sierra Green Bay, which was comfortable and convenient. I'd definitely run this race and stay at that hotel again. The only suggestion I have is to better publicize the access to the stadium for spectators so that our families can take photos and help cheer us on. The stadium was actually pretty quiet, with only a handful of volunteers and fewer than 100 spectators.

Very nice race, well run, FAST course

The course is fast. The event was very well run and organized. The expo was OK, nothing remarkable. The course is fast. Despite 25mph+ winds with gusts to 35mph and nobody to draft behind between 16 and 22 into the wind I PR d by more than 6 minutes. Being able to huddle inside Lambeau and stay warm before the start was a bonus with the weather. I would definitely recommend this race. Did I mention the course is fast?

Perfect for a PR

I've run 8 marathons and Green Bay was easily one of the best. The course is beautiful and finishing with a lap around Lambeau is a thrill. I thought the organization was excellent and despite gusting winds in 2011, the volunteers were wonderful and crowd support was better than I expected. You get a cool finisher's medal and shirt. The post-race set up was a blast: Beer, brats, and music. I will definitely run Green Bay again.

Fast Course and Great Support

The only way I can think to summarize this race is to say: I liked it. Course was pretty much flat and fairly scenic. One of the fastest courses I have run, if you subtract the killer wind. The other runners were all very friendly, and I enjoyed the occasional banter along the course. The crowds were surprisingly strong for the first half of the course. Once the half marathoners split it got a little more quiet, but there were a good amount of people along the six-mile stretch on the river. There were plenty of water stations, although they were a little short. If you were running with a pace group it was difficult to get water at every station, because many of the stations had less then 10 volunteers, which meant they did not have enough water ready, in hand for everyone. I had to grab my own water off the table once or twice, which wasn't a big deal to me, but some people may be bothered by it. My one and only complaint would be the inconsistent mile marking. Some miles were long, while others were too short. At first I though my pace was inconsistent, but I quickly realized that something was wrong when I ran a sub-6 mile. Unfortunately, the two things many people will remember about the 2011 race are the super strong winds, and the fact that the course was 800 feet too long. Considering race officials are adjusting everyone's times, this shouldn't be something to be too upset about. Overall, I thought the race was great.

Very good small-town race

Really enjoyed running in Green Bay this year, but the race was not without a few problems. The good - Really nice course, pretty much no dull spots. Plenty of fan support on course. Pasta dinner was excellent the night before, and included in your entry fee (which by the way was also very reasonable). The Lambeau atrium was a great place to keep warm before the race. Running through the stadium was a nice perk. The not so good - the mile markers were all over the place. Some were long, some short. Not only that, since it was so windy, they couldn't have their markers up, so it was very difficult to figure out where you where at (although fortunately, I drove the course beforehand, which proved to be VERY helpful). Also - there were several water stops in the first half that didn't have enough volunteers, so they weren't getting fluids out efficiently. Neither of these was too game-breaking, but they do need to be corrected in order for this race to elevate from good to great. Overall, it was a fun race that I would recommend doing.

Fantastic race that I plan to run again

This race was my first full marathon and I had a blast. The expo the night before was fun and the pasta dinner was adequate. It is hard to make dinner for 10,000+ people and have it be delicious but they did a good job. The morning of the race I took a shuttle from my hotel to Lambeau Field. I got there early and was able to go inside, stretch and eat and drink. The bathrooms that morning were port-o-lets outside for non-elites. I had to wait in a short line about an hour and a half before the race and a much longer line about 20 minutes before. They could've had more port-o-lets but they really only get used a few minutes before and immediately after. The course was great. I ran with the 4-hour group for the first 3-4 miles and then took off because I felt great. The weather couldn't have been better. I ended up finishing about 3:53, which far surpassed my expectations. The crowd was sparse at places, especially after the half marathon split off, but enthusiastic the whole way. Some people were moving around the course and I saw several posters two or three times. Running through Lambeau at the finish was awesome, although it was kind of cheesy that they played Creed's "Higher" on a loop. I ordered one of the pictures from the sports photography place because it turned out amazing with the scoreboard over one shoulder and the US flag over the other. I loved this race and days later registered for my next marathon. I plan on doing Green Bay again next year because it was such a great experience.

perfect in every way

Coming from Chicago, when I hear "flat"... I expect flat. There are about 5 hills - not steep inclines, but nonetheless, they're not completely flat. But other than that, the course is flat. The last half is beautiful along the lake and through the small towns. It was well-organized and we had exceptional weather. There was a nice number of runners for the marathon - you did not feel like you have to weave in and out of crowds, like you might have to with the bigger marathons. And what better way to end than to run through Lambeau?

FABULOUS MARATHON

This was my 17th marathon and I can't say enough wonderful things about it. Although it was relatively small, you never felt abandoned on the course: Fans stayed out even for us slow folks and cheered for everyone. The water stations were well manned for the entire event (none of this "nothing left" for folks at the back of the pack). In fact, there were so many water stations that I started to feel like I was floating from all I'd had to drink! The race directors were so well prepared for the relatively hot day that they got folks out with wet towels to keep runners cool toward the final miles. At mile 20 a local group put up "a wall" and cheered like mad. Shortly thereafter speakers blasted music to keep us going across the last bridge as we wound back toward Lambeau Field. (How they got those out there, I'll never know, but it was super.) Lovely course through town and the bike trails. The medal was nicely done with a gorgeous, colorful ribbon and, of course, that final .2 miles through the Packer's tunnel and around Lambeau was awesome. Can't say enough great things about the race, the course, and the folks from Green Bay. A MUST-RUN!

ONE WORD: TREMENDOUS!

From start to finish, this was a great race. Expo: nice. Number pick-up: fast and easy. Organization: top notch. Course: FLAT and beautiful. Crowds and volunteers: very supportive. Pasta dinner: easily accessible and plentiful. Finisher medal and shirt: top-notch. Porta-potties and atrium access at the beginning: great. Post-race beer, brats, snacks, massage, and band: excellent. Pre-race Gatorade, water, bananas, oranges, and bagels: unheard of in other races and a nice, unexpected touch. Lambeau lap: priceless.

This course is very flat and well marked. The fans that are out are very supportive. I'm not from Green Bay, but running through the stadium is still a great feeling. Great race, with a great feature I'd never seen

My 45th marathon and I agree with all of the very, very positive comments. I will definitely be back next year. I just want to add one more important comment: I would not have been able to run this marathon if it were not for the "transfer" feature that the race offered. The marathon was sold out, but you could find runners who had entered but were not able to run on the race's Facebook page. I contacted one, and then she was able to transfer her entry and number to me online. I had to pay a $10 transfer fee and then arranged with her to reimburse her for her entry fee through Paypal. She recovered her entry fee, the race gained an extra $10 fee, Green Bay rented an extra hotel room, and I got to run! I would love to see other sold-out marathons offer this same feature.

The weather was a bonus, with sunny skies and temps topping out at about 70. The only adjustment I would like to see would be the addition of clocks at the mile-markers. Everything else was nearly perfect.

First-class event!

Great job, Green Bay! Thank you to all of the volunteers who gave their time and energy. The pre-race meal was outstanding, and the course was flat and scenic. I loved the path along the river. The hotel shuttles were perfect - exactly as advertised. I would do this race again.

First Class

I really appreciate the fact that there was ample Gatorade and even gel throughout the race. The course was wonderfully flat and beautiful. I am a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan, but the lap around Lambeau was very special. I just had a wonderful time all around. Thank you, Green Bay, and GO PACKERS!

great race

I loved this run!! The course was great and the hydration/gel/fruit stations were frequent and staffed with wonderful supportive people. I loved the enthusiasm of all involved and appreciate their effort to put on a first-class event.

What a great race!

I was very impressed by this marathon. Everything about it is top-notch and well organized. There are a lot of water stops and excellent fan support along the course. The course is very flat and fast. The pasta feed is included in the price of your registration, which I thought was a very nice arrangement. All of the related events (expo, pasta feed) are at Lambeau Field, which can easily handle the crowds associated with the race. I stayed in a hotel about a quarter-mile from the stadium, which made getting to the race easy; but be aware that the hotels close to the stadium fill up really fast, so book early. There is also bus shuttle service from many hotels. Put this event on your schedule; it's worth doing.

Amazing race!

Wow. Green Bay was my first marathon experience. I was 14 when I completed the marathon in 2008; it was so well organized, and an awesome race to run!!

Great course, organization, and friendly people

This was the second year I ran this race. I'm in the early stages of the 50 state quest but ran Green Bay again because it's truly a great race. The organization equals or surpasses other marathons I've run. If you are looking to run your first marathon or 100th marathon, I highly recommend this race. The expo and pasta dinner are both held inside Lambeau. Plenty of vendors at the expo and as much pasta to eat at dinner as you could want. Also available were meetings to go over the course and ask the race director any and all questions. The race itself begins outside of Lambeau and you can use the indoor bathrooms (or outside port-a-potties) before (and after) the race. Lambeau is a good place to stay warm before the race begins. I experienced no problems at the start of the race and pacing groups are available if you want them. The course itself takes you through a variety of residential areas then runs along a scenic path by the river. Generally it is flat and plenty of musical entertainment is provided along the way. I personally did not run well (upset stomach) but that had nothing to do with the race. The funny part was around mile 20 they offered A&W Root Beer alongside of water and Gatorade at the aid station. In desperation I drank the root beer and was pleased to find out that it settled my stomach and I was then able to complete the race without discomfort. Of course, the best part of the race is running through Lambeau just before the race ends. Friends and family can sit in the stands to watch you run by - pretty cool. Post-race food is fine, and beer and brats are available. I already have this race on my 2010 calendar. The organizers of this race do an outstanding job. 'Nuff said!

First Marathon was great!!

This was my first full marathon and it was great! I would definitely recommend this race to any runner. I traveled from Virginia to visit my sister and run this race. Besides the fact that my wonderful family was at certain points to support me along the way, the race was very organized. The Cellcom had plenty of water, Gatorade, supporters, funny motivational signs, and gels all the way through! There were very few light hills, NICE people, clear markers, great weather... and BEER and brats at the finish!! Only in Green Bay! :)

Excellent, as always

This is one of my favorite races ever, and it does well in capitalizing on what makes Green Bay special (football, brats, etc.). One suggestion: the starting area could be improved by corral starts (similar to the Memphis Marathon).

Great marathon

Great marathon in every way. I qualified for Boston, so I'm going to be a bit prejudiced, but it would be really hard to find fault with this race. Pre-race pick-up was very well organized. Good-sized expo with some good deals, which seems to be rare. As for the race itself, I was surprised to read some of the comments on a crowded start. The start areas for various predicted finish times were well marked, so unless someone buried themselves in the pack, that didn't seem to be much of an issue. Aid stations were plentiful (18), well manned and well organized. I loved the course. The course itself is not pancake-flat, with some rolls in miles 5-9. A look at the elevation chart can answer any questions in that regard. Crowd support was enthusiastic. There were some sections with very few spectators, but in a city of 100K, that is to be expected. Though I was pushing too hard to savor the experience, running through Lambeau in the last half-mile was very cool. Good food and beer afterward, to top it off.

Excellent course with great support!

Pros: 1. For a town of only 100,000 people, Green Bay came out in force to support the runners! Thank you all! 2. The volunteers were the friendliest and most encouraging I have ever seen! 3. Flat, fast course. 4. Very well organized. 5. Excellent post-race festivities. Cons: 1. The Lambeau experience needs a little work - consider the physiological effects of running from a bright and cold atmosphere on asphalt to a dark and HOT tunnel on hard concrete, then out again, then in again, then out again. A few amenities can solve this. 2. Better signage for mile markers. 3. Start the marathoners at 6:30, then the 5K at 7, and then the half-marathoners at 7:30. The start was too crowded. 4. Need something more than a cotton shirt. 5. Beef up the expo with more marathon apparel, Tyvek, etc.

Fun, Fast, Well Organized Event

Had a great time in Green Bay. If you are an out-of-towner, book way in advance, as there are only a few hotels right near the start/finish, and they fill up fast. Temps were ideal, starting about 40 and ending in the low 50's. Thankfully, the 43 mph wind gusts that were prevalent the day before the race died down to around 12 mph race day. Logistics for the race are great, as the start/finish/expo are in Lambeau Field. Also, very well priced race, with one free ticket to the pasta party. The nice thing about the pasta party is that they open up a section of the stands at Lambeau Field for your dining pleasure. The course is fast and mostly flat. I lined up slightly in front of the 4-hour pace group and had absolutely no problems with crowding at the start. There were more spectators than I thought there would be and they were all enthusiastic. Lots of aid stations, as I believe there were a total of 19 for the marathon. It's definitely a fast course, with the first half slightly faster. The only hills are the two bridges and those aren't very long or steep. Much of the second half was run by the river on an asphalt bike trail. The finish with a lap through Lambeau was a lot of fun, even though there were plenty of half-marathon walkers who insisted on ignoring the 50-foot "Single File Only" signs and would walk obliviously side by side, blocking the marathon runners. Unfortunately, there isn't much the race director can do about rude behavior from the participants. The race was very well organized, with great post-race brats and beer. Friendly locals, good logistics, free pasta party ticket, reasonable registration fee, lap through Lambeau, fast course... what's not to like? My only suggestion to the race director are the mile marker signs. Some were marked on large flags high off street level, some were on small signs just lying on the road, and some were missing altogether. I wound up missing over half the mile marker signs. The mile markers should should be consistent, large, visible and ideally on both sides of the street. In closing, I also want to profusely thank the medical volunteers who helped me post-race with my severe calf cramps and dehydration problems. Thanks for the race director for a fun and well organized event.

Great Marathon Experience

This was my first marathon, but it was an excellent experience. -It was an ideal size (in my opinion). It was not so crowded as to be overwhelming, but there were enough people on the course so that you never felt you were alone. -The course was very flat and fast. -Excellent communication prior to the race (weekly e-mail updates with training ideas, motivational sayings, etc). -They also had a first-rate "first-timers" program that included additional e-mails with more pointers, a Q&A session at the expo, etc. -Plenty of hotels within walking distance of the festivities (all offered shuttles to the race as well). We stayed at the Cambria Suites, and I would highly recommend the hotel (brand new, very large rooms, and they offered late checkout for all of the participants). -The crowd support wasn't like what you'd find in a larger race, but everyone was very enthusiastic and vocal. It was also easy for fans to make it to several points throughout the course (my family was able to see me 3 different times). -The finish at Lambeau was a treat, and the post-race activities were great. No "true" negatives. As someone else pointed out, some of the mile markers were difficult to find (I'm sure they were there but you had to know where to look for them). The first part of the race is mostly through residential areas so it didn't make for the most exciting running or offer inspiring views, but there were enough people lining the streets to help you get through it. All in all, I was very impressed and will continue to run this race in coming years.

Great race, great race director

The Cellcom Green Bay Marathon is really a terrific event. I participated in the marathon for the second straight year in 2009, making it my fifth marathon overall. It was probably not a great idea for me to run in another marathon so soon after I took on the Boston Marathon, as Boston took place less than four weeks earlier. The first time in my life I ran longer than four miles was just under two years ago, so I'm new to all this and I keep having to learn some lessons the hard way. Despite the fact that I suffered a stress fracture over the course of the 2008 Paavo Nurmi Marathon and had to miss four months of training, I couldn't resist and gave Green Bay another go. During those four months of inactivity, I forced in about six ill-advised training runs, and I also ran in the fun Cheesehead 5K in September, something I paid for well in advance, though my participation there wound up setting back the healing process a couple months. My foot held up well as I trained for and participated in Boston, but I aggravated the old injury in training both too soon and too hard after Boston. Now I'm paying the price. Those experts who tell us to take it easy in the immediate aftermath of a marathon really know what they're talking about. :) Back to Green Bay: The course is really fair, a thousand times flatter than the Paavo Nurmi and Boston. Running through Lambeau Field at the end is a real treat, as are the brats and other refreshments once the run is over. The finisher's medal is terrific, right down to the cool design on the ribbon. Last year's medal hung from a plain white ribbon, so the major upgrade this year was a nice surprise. It's the first medal I've received in any race (5K or marathon) that featured an impressive design on the ribbon. Having just run Boston, it would be impossible for any race to compare as far as crowd support is concerned. There were long stretches without much in the way of spectators, but the race keeps getting a bigger and better name, and I expect the number of spectators to increase, as well. I couldn't have asked for better support from the people who did turn out, though, and as usual, I had lots of tremendously appreciated family support before, during, and after. I think Sean Ryan, the Cellcom Green Bay Marathon race director, deserves an enormous amount of credit for how positive an experience the Green Bay Marathon is. My main criticisms last year (the first minor, the other more important) had to do with a) the T-shirt we received, which had a small design on the side, near the bottom and b) the lack of instruction for walkers/runners as they entered and made their way through Lambeau Field. I was just ready to really turn it up a notch last year over the course of the last mile, and I had to completely stop a couple of times in order to make my way around walkers who were side-by-side, blocking the way for those behind them. This year, the T-shirt featured a nice, prominent design on the front, and I was pleased with that. The improvement regarding walkers/runners obstructing the way through Lambeau Field was remarkable this year, as there were huge signs all over the place directing participants on how to make their way through, as well as volunteers reiterating the same instructions. I need to give REALLY big kudos to Sean Ryan and the volunteers for doing such a great job here. I happened to run into Sean Ryan a month ago by chance after we both made our way off the same plane at Boston Logan Airport. He noticed my 2008 Green Bay Marathon T-shirt, and he struck up a conversation with me about it. Last year's Green Bay was the first of two races I qualified at Boston for, with the other being the Paavo Nurmi. We talked about that and about running in general, and he couldn't have been a friendlier guy. After noticing criticisms last year and seeing how any legitimate beef seemed to be addressed in a much more than satisfactory way this year, I look at the Cellcom Green Bay Marathon as an event to really, really "look out for." It's already a big deal, but I think, thanks to Sean Ryan, its potential is limitless. I noticed there was some issue this year regarding an elite runner falling near the nineteen mile mark, with some sort of mix-up occurring. I read Mr. Ryan's comments in the paper regarding how steps would be taken to prevent such an issue from taking place in the future. Based on Mr. Ryan's track record with issues that inevitably creep up at every race, you can guarantee that the man is ON THE CASE. No race is perfect, certainly not even the Boston Marathon, but I get the sense that Sean Ryan's goal is to make the Green Bay Marathon as close to perfect as is humanly possible. The Cellcom Green Bay Marathon couldn't be in better hands. :-) Side note: Just as the last mile was to start and I was about to make my "push," a spectator in a car yelled out much-appreciated encouragement to the runners. I waved to them, which provided just enough distraction for me to run right into a cone, causing me to fall on my hands and knees in rather dramatic fashion. Only Steve could get attacked by an inanimate object over the course of a race. I got up immediately and appreciated the kind thoughts shared by the runners behind me, but I was thoroughly embarrassed and picked up right where I left off. I ran the last mile in 6:45, by far my fastest mile of the day. This came on the heels of several sub-par miles, as my hips were killing me and the pain kept getting progressively worse over the last ten miles or so. I experimented a little at Green Bay, seeing as I'd already qualified for next year's Boston, and I started out faster than I should've. Maybe I've hit on a little trick the running experts aren't aware of - fall hard with about a mile to go. :-) So, yes, if your finishing time was somewhere between 3:15 and 3:17, I was the fool who entertained you around the twenty-five mile mark. :-)

Mixed Feelings

Pros: Running through Lambeau was an experience I'll never forget. Beer and brats at the finish! Great crowd support; volunteers were very friendly and helpful. The medal is my favorite yet. Cons: Cotton t-shirt a disappointment. Start line organization was horrendous. Green Bay as a town is unremarkable, and the course looked the same throughout (except for the river crossing and Lambeau). Some pace groups were horridly inconsistent (the 5:00 pacer ran 7 minutes fast).

Great Race, As Advertised

I had read many reviews of this race on this website and I have to agree with all the reviews. This is a great race. The town of Green Bay is very nice, as are the people. The Lambeau Field venue is awesome. Being able to hang out in the indoor atrium before the race, and stretch and have flush toilets that accommodate a whole packed Lambeau Field for Packers games means there's certainly enough room for all of the runners. The organization of this race was outstanding. The race director really has it all together for the race. This had the most water stops of all six marathons that I have run. Bag-drop was super convenient. Post-race food was excellent. Just overall superb organization. The course was pretty good. Only downside was that there were a lot of concrete roads (guess that is the way you have to build roads in that climate). The course wound through a lot of residential neighborhoods, which was nice. Lots of turns, but nothing bad happened with that. Getting to enter through Lambeau at the end of the race and running on the (enter John Facenda) frozen tundra of Lambeau Field (exit John Facenda) was really cool. Not a lot of fans on the course, but fans never were a big motivator for me. The race is enough to pump me up. The only downside for me was the travel to Green Bay. I currently live in San Antonio, and it took about 12 hours of travel time to and from Green Bay, which was a drag. Even still, I was really glad to chosen this race, and I agree: it is one of the best marathons in the country.

Sean Ryan for race director of the year!

The organization was top-notch. All of those little things that annoy you at other races were conspicuously absent. Three gel stations, exactly where I wanted them. The fluid cups were filled to perfection. Gatorade was at every water station. Even when the half-marathoners left, and things got lonely, I knew where I was going. The course is flat. The expo was decent for a medium-sized race. Packet pick-up was easy. Pasta dinner included at Lambeau. Ample parking and hotel shuttles. Free beer after the race, and at the pasta dinner. No silly bands or stupid gimmicks (unless you count running through Lambeau). Reasonably priced. Minor complaints: the running surface was often concrete and a little hard. I wanted to start nearer to the front of the pack and had to work to get there (I am a big fan of wave starts and fixed corrals, but this might be a personal preference not shared by everyone). Since it is a medium-sized race, I didn't mind running with the half-marathoners (sub-7:30 the field wasn't that crowded). The course was pretty fast, and I was able to chug along at a constant pace and get my first BQ. I don't know if I would travel across the country to run it. There isn't much mystique for non-Packers fans, and Green Bay isn't a stunningly beautiful city. But because of the strong organization, it is a good, no-nonsense, runner's race, and worth running for anyone in the region.

Terrific race, not just a terrific price!

Where do I begin? This was my 5th marathon and by far the best experience (and a PR!). I wrote the race director less than 24 hours after I finished to thank him for a great job. Where to start? FIRST: IT'S AFFORDABLE. In this world of "mega" marathons with "mega" prices, this one is cheap: $60. That $60 includes the pasta dinner (which was tasty, plentiful and clean), shirt, medal, and the best post-race food I've ever seen (water, root beer, beer, fruit, cookies, brats, cheese, YOU NAME IT!). COURSE: flat and lovely. The river-side part would have been tough if it were windy, but we had perfect weather. SPECTATORS: above average in number for a small race. And in the spots where there wasn't a lot of fan access (along the Fox River in De Pere), there were motivational signs (sponsored by local businesses) every 10 feet or so. FLUIDS/AID: these stations were well stocked and appeared every where they were advertised online pre-race. The aid stations even gave out Advil! (Some don't, like Twin Cities, which only gives out Tylenol (ick).) LAMBEAU: even as a Vikings fan, I liked the run through Lambeau: they allowed friends and family to be in the stands cheering for you and they were blasting motivational music in the arena. EXPO: normal-sized expo for an event with 10,000 people. PARKING: FREE. Free at the expo, free at the pasta dinner, free at the race. You won't get that in Chicago or New York, and not even Twin Cities! This race was spectacular, and if I didn't need to start my training in February in Minnesota, I'd make it a yearly pilgrimage. RUN GREEN BAY!

Excellent Mid-Sized Marathon

The race organizers did a great job with this race. The course was very flat and fast. The run through Lambeau Field was great. The finish area was well organized and all of the volunteers were friendly and helpful. The free post-race beer and brats were appreciated. One minor suggestion: All of the miles should be marked with clear signage. In some places the miles were only painted on the pavement. I missed a couple of mile markers and had to guess about my pace until I found the next one. This is a very minor issue with a very nice course in a very nice town.

Fun marathon - would run it again!!

Pros: Quick in-and-out for race info - no ID checked so friends can pick stuff up for you. Smaller number of runners, so plenty of water. Lots of water stops. Lots of toilets. Awesome finish through Lambeau. Cheap hotels. Most hotels were a few blocks from start/finish line. Cons: The starting line was crammed with both full- and half-marathon runner. It would be nice to stagger those starts by 10 minutes. Things were not clearly marked and we weren't told where to run through Lambeau; the elite were finishing with half-marathon runners, which was very confusing.

My first half-marathon, and I thought....

...that it was pretty cool having the marathon village and events at Lambeau, and to run the final leg into the stadium. The course was good... 99% city streets, but most had big trees on both sides. There weren't a lot of spectators, but enough to keep you going. The event was well organized and went smoothly for this first-timer. The cotton t-shirts were a true disappointment.

Incredible volunteers make for great race

I'd recommend this race as a good early season one. The highlight was the volunteers, whether at the aid stations, the end of the race, or wherever. They were excellent! The weather was ideal except for a slight headwind. The course is relatively flat, although the back side of the marathon felt a bit lonely at times. All in all, it was a good experience.

Excellent Race - Highly Recommend

This was my first full marathon and this race is first-rate all the way!! I would highly recommend this race to anyone. The expo and pasta dinner were excellent, the start was well organized, the course is flat, the aid stations were well stocked and the Lambeau finish was incredible. My only complaint was that miles 16 - 22 were on a bike trail along the Fox River, which had very little crowd support and, I thought, was a little boring. If you plan to do this race you need to book a hotel room well in advance - Green Bay hotels fill up fast. My wife and I will be back for the half marathon in 2009!!

Great Organization; Fantastic Support

Race organizers had all of the essential logistics covered well, including packet pick-up, race start, course markings and control, aid stations, timing, awesome finisher medal, and post-race amenities. Some of the most inspiring and enthusiastic aid stations I have ever seen - thank you to all of the sponsors. Green Bay has to be one of the most motivating venues for a marathon and it is clear that the organizers, sponsors, and community collaborate to provide an event that is on par with the great sports history of the area. Fantastic!

Great Race; Great Organization; Great Volunteers

Pre-Marathon: Marathon organizers did a great job. I signed up for emails. I enjoyed reading the helpful hints and words of inspiration. Race director did a great job. I wanted to buy some Green Bay Marathon sweatshirts and shirts. There is no online merchandise store on the official website. I got to the expo around 3 o'clock, and the little Green Bay Marathon logo merchandise that they were selling was pretty picked over. I would have looked forward to wearing a logo shirt or sweat shirt, so I would say the organizers are missing an opportunity to broadcast the Green Bay Marathon. Pasta dinner at Lambeau was fantastic. There was plenty of pasta, salad, bread sticks and cookies. I like the idea of opening a section of the stadium to eat in stands. Marathon: Free and ample parking at the stadium made for a stress-free start to the day. Opening up the Lambeau atrium before the start of the race made a nice place to stretch and relax. Plenty of port-a-potties at the starting area. The volunteers at water stations did a great job.... I never broke stride, as a volunteer always had a packet of GU or water ready for the taking. The first part of the marathon winding through the neighborhood streets was a little boring. The one exception was passing the church at around the 6-mile mark. I think the whole congregation was cheering the runners on as they passed by the church. I looked down and noticed that they had written various messages in chalk on the street. The one that got me going was, "Jesus loves runners." Sometimes I run with my head down, so I was a little worried I might miss the break-off point of the 1/2 marathon full/marathon. The markings on the street and the guy on the elevated stand with the bull horn made it very clear which path I should be on. I enjoyed the scenic run along the Fox river. The wall at the 20-mile mark was a classic. When I got to somewhere around the 25-mile mark, I saw Lambeau. With the anticipation of running on Lambeau Field, the last mile was the easiest of the 26. Running through the players' tunnel, striking the sign in the tunnel, and the run and around the field was a rush. I finished before the train, so that was not an issue. Since it is not a mega marathon, they don't completely close the streets for the runners. I did notice there were a few intersections where the police (all were friendly as you passed by) were standing to stop cross traffic. Each time I made it through the intersection without having to stop. Each time, in the back of my mind I was thinking, "That's really going to suck when the policemen stops the runners to let the built-up traffic through the intersection...." Not sure what the answer to that problem would be, but it's something the organizers should work on solving. Post-Marathon: The post-race Title Town beer and brats are a classic. There was plenty of food and drink. The shirt they give participants is weak. It is a cotton shirt with design in the bottom corner. If you are a Green Bay Packer fan, and I am, this is a special race. A took away a lot of fond memories. Overall, a great experience.

I'll be back

Pros: Plenty of aid stations with water, Gatorade, GU, bathrooms, and enthusiastic people. Very friendly and helpful. Flat course in a nice residential area and senic Fox River. Lambeau Field both inside and out!!! Cons: Cotton t-shirt with the design in the bottom left corner. No changing tent at finish. Mass start with 5K and half marathon. A great suggestion from a previous post to start the marathon first, and then the half 15 minutes later, and the 5K 15 minutes after that.

Well organized and fun.

I am a Green Bay Packer fan, so this was a very special marathon for me. Well organized, with great support from the community. We got to the expo at 6:00 on Saturday and the official marathon merchandise booth was already gone - and they didn't set up at all on race day. What the heck kind of sense does that make?!?! I am still disgusted that I dragged my butt all the way from York, Pennsylvania to Green Bay, and did not come back with a running shirt or a hat. I talked to the race director who was real nice, but have heard nothing since. Why not sell stuff on the website? While I am whining, why were there cones every 50 feet in the middle of the running lane the first third of the race? I saw a number of people fall and nearly fall. All in all, a great weekend in a very special town.

Wow - great race

This was a fun, flat, well-organized marathon. Running through the players' tunnel and around Lambeau Field was great. I was one of the runners that was stopped by the train. Am glad I was not on track for a PB or Boston, but was still happy with my time.

A good time & a very well organized race!

This was my 1st marathon. I thought it was a great time. I don't think I could of picked a better race for my 1st one. It is very flat and fast. I had an ultimate goal of a Boston qualifier. I was actually ahead of that pace at mile 22, when my leg started to cramp. The last 4 miles were a little slower, but I still got my ultimate goal. All of the aid stations and water stations were great. The volunteers were awesome. The flat course and Lambeau were my deciding factors for running this race. Turned out to be a great decision on my part. The first-timer's meeting was cool. The presenter there was awesome. Thank you. The medals are very cool. Love the idea behind them. I would like to see a moisture wicking tech shirt of some kind offered to runners, as opposed to the cotton shirts. I like to wear them to other races that I run; it makes for good conversation. I would recommend this race to everyone. Being from S.E. Iowa, I will try to run this race again if I can. My 12-year-old son said he would like to run it next year if I go again. Thanks to everyone involved with this event. Very well done!!!!!

My very first 1/2 - great way to begin!

When I decided to run my very first half marathon, I searched for a race that would be on the small side, but with the feel of a larger race. Green Bay really fit this bill. From registration to the finish line, the organization was outstanding. Being a "first-timer," I received weekly emails giving me encouragement and tips, and counting down the days to the race. All "first timers" also received a special t-shirt at packet pick-up. Speaking of the shirts, they were really disappointing. Not only are they not technical shirts, but they also are strangely designed. The image is printed on the bottom edge of the quite long shirt, so you cannot tuck it in or fold it up if you're short, like me. The support along the course was wonderful. There were not many spectators along the route, but the people who came out of their homes were amazing. The little old couple with their record player playing polka music in their driveway was unforgettable!! Also, as another reviewer mentioned, the crew just after the mile 10/11 water stop was AWESOME! I think they all were members of a church - they were wearing the same white t-shirts. The run through Lambeau was cool, but not what I expected. It was hard being a sloooow half marathoner (finished in just over 3 hours) with the faster full marathoners finishing alongside me. I know that some of the more hardcore marathoners were getting annoyed by us walk/runners who were also trying to get the most out of our experience, if only more slowly. The finisher's medals are gender-specific and feature images of the fastest local marathoners from 2007's race. Very cool. I really only have 2 major complaints: there was no Gu left at the mile 7 water stop for those of us in the back of the pack (from somewhere around 2:30:00 1/2 finishers). Also, the finish line food was pretty pathetic compared to other much smaller races I've done. We only received small bits of bagels and bananas, orange slices and Popsicles (which were great). It would have been nice to get a whole bagel or banana, but maybe that's just me. Of course, the FREE BEER at the end more than made up for that! ;-) I highly recommend this race, especially if you're looking to do your first full or half marathon and want a special experience!!

Best big race we've ever done.

PROS: Top-notch race organization. Plentiful, delicious pasta dinner. Excellent pre-race (especially the race director's course presentation) and race experience in Lambeau Field. Wonderful, flat, course through residential neighborhoods, complete with enthusiastic volunteers and entertainment, and numerous fluid stops (~ every 2 miles!). Fantastic post party (who doesn't revel in all-you-can-eat brats and beer while listening to a great band?). Sharp finisher medals (male and female, half and full marathon specific, with last year's male or female local winner engraved on the medal). We definitely plan on returning next year from Chicagoland. CONS: None. Cotton race shirts were ok, but for folks who race a lot, these might be giveaways. A better design would make it a keeper. Other than that, this event was as perfect a big race as we'd ever experienced. AWESOME JOB! p.s. Having hotels a block from Lambeau Field is also terrific!

Nice race - needs polish

This was a nice race and I loved starting and running with the 1/2's for the 1st 10 miles. Lambeau Field was great - especially entering via the same tunnel Favre did on game days. :) Two complaints: Finish line was lame - parking lot with a couple tents and not much food in sight. Also, stopped by a train during the race?! Unacceptable - it is not safe for those involved.

Looking for PR course? Green Bay is it!

Weather for race day was mostly ideal: cool, mix of sun and clouds, and little breezy - but what else would you expect running a race so close to the lake and along the Fox River? Aid stations well equipped, I loved the numerous GU handouts, and other runners were extremely friendly. I had several runners keep pace with me and talk throughout the race at different points. For any football fan, running the track around the field in Lambeau was awesome. Really helped to give the extra kick at the end to finish strong. Brats and beer at the end were great, although I thought the finish area for runners was a little lacking in other post-race foods. Main complaints would be to provide technical quality shirts to runners - or at least have more merchandise available to purchase at the expo that had marathon logo on them. Also, my family only received one of the text message alerts showing my progress. I realize there is usually some delay, but they never even received any of the other messages at all! Overall, good race if you are looking to PR and nice size if you don't like super large crowds. If I lived closer, I would definitely be back!

GREAT RACE - MY FIRST MARATHON

I ran my very first marathon on Sunday. From beginning to end, it was a great experience. The organizers of the race thought of everything! Please thank the wonderful man volunteering to hand out the women's marathon finisher's medals, who gave me the warmest hug as I was overwhelmed with emotions - knowing that I had qualified for the Boston Marathon on this very first attempt!

great volunteers and spectators

The weather was great - maybe a bit too windy. The course was fun and the run through Lambeau was fantastic. The party after with brats and beer is a classic. I too agree that there should be a wave start - everyone should not start together. Too much congestion. I also had a problem with the train. I was stuck for at least 5 minutes. Yes, I was disappointed because I didn't make my goal because of the train - but the race was fun and I would definitely do it again. The wall at mile 20 was awesome. Crowds were great all the way. Thank you, Green Bay.

Nice marathon

My tenth marathon, but first time running Green Bay. Nice little marathon with great Midwestern hospitality. Pro: Great water/Gatorade/Gu stops. Con: Cellcom ran out of texting slots, so when my wife and I showed up to the expo, we were told she wouldn't get texts to monitor my status. Pro: Lambeau Field is amazing to run around. Con: 2nd half of the marathon course is run along a smelly river and there is little crowd support.

great race!

A class act all the way around! The organization of this event is especially noteworthy. No major problems. The 1/2 and full marathon may have reached their limit, judging by the amount of traffic over the first few miles.

A Sensational Marathon Event

This marathon event was centered around Lambeau Field in Green Bay, so many thanks to the Green Bay Packer organization for the use of their facilities. The stadium has an huge atrium attached to the east side, and the expo was held there, and it was a decent expo. The pasta dinner was held under the west/northwest side bleachers, and a portion of the bleachers were open, where we could eat and enjoy the awe of this stadium. There was an abundance of pasta, salad, bread sticks, cookies, and root beer, coffee, and milk. This was perhaps the best that I have seen in 22 marathons. The parking at Lambeau was free, and the atrium and bathroom facilities were available before race time. The marathon started in the middle of Lombardi Ave., and headed into the residential area northeast of the stadium, then headed west of U.S. 40 and then back toward the Fox River. Here, the 1/2 marathoners turned toward their finish line, and the marathoners went south along the river to De Pere - a nice and friendly town to the south. In De Pere we crossed the Fox River (about mile 16) and turned into a stiff headwind for 5.5 or 6 miles along the river on the ped/bike path. At mile marker 21 we crossed back over the river, for a few more miles or residential neighborhoods, before returning to Lambeau. Inside the last mile, we entered the tunnel leading onto the field, looped around the turf, and then into the east side parking lot for the finish line and post-race festivities. The headwind took its toll on me, but that was in God's hand. The course (which was mostly flat) and the organization were top-notch (both got 5's), and the spectators for a medium-size event (8,000 full and 1/2 marathon runners) in a town of 100,000 people was outstanding - spectators/fans get a 5 too. And as always, the volunteers are much appreciated for their service - many who were youngsters working with the adults, and law enforcement personnel were excellent in guiding runners through intersections and controlling traffic. A personal note: Between mile 10 and 11 there was a street corner just filled with folks - fans - and they were wildly enthusiastic. Maybe 50 to 100 total people (I just wasn't thinking about how many there might have been). These folks were just wildly cheering us on and doing high 5's. It started with two very young girls, and it went on for maybe 25 people in a row! I felt like these were my personal friends, cheering me on, and I can not use words to describe the emotional lift these people gave us - and me in particular. Nobody that I knew, and nobody I will likely ever see again. But they certainly left their mark on me. Wow! There was another bunch of enthusiastic fans at mile marker 21 as we crossed the bridge. Not as many, but they too were an inspiration to me. This was a very worthwhile marathon event and I highly recommend it. If you have issues with the Packers as a football franchise, you should set the issues aside and go run this marathon! I don't think you will be disappointed.

My First and I loved it

This was my first time running in any event! I ran and successfully finished the half marathon. I don't have any runs/events to compare the Cellcom Marathon with, but I was extremely pleased with the way it was organized. People were very helpful and things moved smoothly from start to finish. Thank you for giving me the best experience on my very first run!

Quite a Surprise

As I continue around the USA one marathon at a time, I try to give my honest comments on each marathon I have run with a little about the location for flavor. I have run small races, large races, and in this case, a mid-sized race. While the half and the 5K are the big draws among the 8,000-plus runners, they do not know what they have missed. The course starts off slowly, going back a forth around residential areas. Those who ran only the half saw this part of the course. After the split, those who ran the whole marathon crossed over to the other side of the Fox River and got to run the bike path for about 5 miles along the river. This was a great part of the course and people should do the full marathon if only for this part of the course. The course was nice, but not 5 stars. What was 5 stars was the incredibly good organization. The course was well marked, police where at all the right locations, aid stations were plentiful and well stocked and manned, plus it was a treat to have three GU stations with a large supply of GU available. The spectators were out in force. For a small city the locals really get behind and support the race by volunteering or cheering the runners. Green Bay, you did a great job. As for the city itself, the locals seemed to be almost uniformly pleasant and more then willing to help out. I challenge anyone to find a nicer group of people as a whole. You made Green Bay a very nice place to visit. The city is nice and does have some things to see. I was only disappointed by how few people I saw out and about on Saturday before and Sunday after the race. There are plenty of hotels near the stadium and the Cambria Suites where I stayed was very nice. Brett Favre's Steak House was surprisingly good. The expo was a treat with more then enouph vendors. The pasta party was the only race-sponsored event that I found lacking, and if I went again, I would skip it. If you want to get in Wisconsin there are a number of really good races, but do not discount Green Bay. It deserves to be given equal billing with Fox City and Mad City.

Nice, flat, friendly

VERY good course to attain a PR. Extremely flat and well organized. Only major problem was the train at mile 20-21. Hard to plan around (I assume), but very frustrating to wait for a train at that point. The beer at the finish line was great - brewed by a local brewery, not cheap mass-produced stuff. Lap around Lambeau was priceless. Overall, a true Wisconsin experience - beer, brats and friendliness!

A must-do marathon

This is a well-organized and run race. Being able to run inside Lambeau Field before finishing is quite a thrill. The course is flat and has plenty of supplies - water, Gatorade, Gu, oranges, bananas, and towels handed out along the way. Timing mats let those following your run know how you are doing. This year the temperature was perfect, but the wind did pick up a little. I ran the half last year and came back to do the full this year. Thanks for a great time.

Green Bay 2008 - Thanks Sean and Team

This was my 6th marathon (4th different city) and overall I thought it was a good experience. Sean Ryan has done a good job with his operations staff of organizing the marathon very well. Great course overview presentation on the Saturday by Sean and the packet pick up and small expo seem well organized. The event T-shirt could be improved upon - a running top maybe? I know there is a cost to produce but I wonder if most runners just end up throwing away the basic t-shirts that some races give out? I know I do, but I do keep and wear the tops, such as the excellent Nike pro-tech running shirt given out for the Chicago Ready to Run 20-miler. On race day, thanks to the organizers for putting on shuttle buses from area hotels - very much appreciated and a great start for chatting with fellow runners. Be sure to try to get to the front at the start of the race; unfortunately I didn't, and I found myself tripping over people who were walking the half marathon course from the gun start (I also think a number of people still do not understand how to line up for races according to time goals!!!). The course itself was mostly flat and this weekend saw great temps and mostly sunny weather. The wind wasn't too much of a factor in the neighborhoods, but was more apparent on the exposed areas of the Fox River Trail. Aid stations were excellently organized (thanks so much to the volunteers), and as someone who seems to need an exceptional level of fluids, I appreciated the frequency of aid stations on the marathon course. The wall party at mile 20 was also appreciated as a boost. I must say I was somewhat disappointed that there were not more local people out supporting the runners, especially since the race did meander through different neighborhoods. The people who did venture out of their houses were very supportive, and so, thanks to them for making the effort to cheer on the runners. Last year when I ran Fargo I was very impressed at how many local people were out of their houses cheering on the runners. The finish around the inside track of Lambeau field was great to do as well. Finisher's medal was good and I like the way the top local male and female athletes are incorporated in the medal design. To L.S below: I just passed over the tracks before that train arrived and I was wondering what they would do with the runners - not good with personal goals at stake. Definitely for 2009 that should be taken into consideration if possible for a course re-direction.

Flat, fast, and great organization

Overall, this is a great event. This year, the weather happened to be nice and cool and I PR'd. I live in Milwaukee and this was my first visit to Green Bay. Lambeau was an exceptional venue to have the expo, pasta dinner, start and finish and post-race party. I loved the lap around the football field. The volunteers were awesome. Aid stations were superb and I loved the gel supply at the 7, 13, and 20 mile marks. The race director also did a great job doing the pre-race presentation, explaining the logistics in detail. Just two concerns: 1. The train delay mentioned in the previous post. 2. Apparently the pasta dinner ran out of meat sauce and some beverages. My wife paid $15 and thought it shouldn't have run out of anything. I will do this race again.

Flat and Fast! Great Boston Qualifier!

I got a huge PR, so I obviously LOVE this marathon - flat and fast, just like advertised. There was some major confusion at the start with the pacers. Due to the start line congestion, the 4:00 pacer started ahead of the 3:30 pacer! It all got sorted out by mile 3, but it was a very confusing first few miles. I ran with the 3:30 pace group and we had a blast. I would recommend running with a pace group, so you won't notice if/when the spectators are sparse. I do wish the water stops were longer. Many of them were so congested that it wasn't possible to get to the Gatorade or water without cutting off other runners or coming to a complete stop. Fortunately, there are so many water stops (every 1.5 miles) that you didn't have to go far to get to the next one. Also, I wish spectators could fill the 1st row or two all around Lambeau instead of just one section. I expected Lambeau to be awesome, with music and lots of people cheering. It wasn't. Still, probably the best part of the marathon course, but not what I was expecting. Overall, the race was well organized and I would highly recommend it for a PR or BQ.

Great race with a few improvements needed

A great race. It is a flat, black-top course. Water and Gatorade stops are present about every 1.5 miles and port-a-potties about every 2 or 3 miles. Gu was available about every 7 miles. There were a lot of spectators at the early stages of the race, but the route along the river made it difficult for them to get to the course to support the runners during those miles, but everyone who showed up to support the runners was really nice and friendly. Here is my idea on how to improve the race and they just pertain to the start: They had the 5k, marathon, and half marathon start from the same gates at the same time; 8000 runners trying to cram down the same street was not good, so why not start the marathoners at 7am, the 1/2 marathoners at 7:15am, and the 5k at 7:30am?

Overall, Nice (Small) Marathon

Kudos to the City of Green Bay! This was my 5th marathon and it had a lot of crowd support for a small/medium marathon. If you want to run a PR, then run Green Bay. The only negatives that I have are the post-race food and the lack of bathrooms. I ran a 2:53 but got stuck starting with the 4:20 pace group because I was waiting on a bathroom.

Very nice, medium-sized marathon

Green Bay is not a large marathon, but it has some "feel" to it, thanks in large part to the fact it has the storied Lambeau Field as a staging area. Director Sean Ryan does a nice job making the marathon a participant-focused event by making it a reasonably-priced marathon with solid organization. The course is varied enough, with the first half more interesting than the second half. It is a relatively flat and fast course with only one sizable incline that happens to be a bridge. The city has not embraced the marathon the way some others have in regards to spectators. Most neighborhoods were empty, but the ones that were out were festive and welcoming. Organization was very good, as were the volunteers. Water stations were excellent and well stocked. I wish they would have kept the post-race goodies - like beer and brats - near where runners finished, like they did in 2006, but that is a small complaint. The medals were nice and they were gender-specific - kind of cool. The T-shirt will stay in my drawer, however, and expo merchandise could be expanded. Running in Lambeau Field is a near religious experience for any Packer fan (like me) and a real rush! Overall, it is one of my favorites and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good marathon.

Green Bay 2008

This was my second full marathon (have also done 5 half-marathons at major marathon events). Overall I thought it was a good experience. The course was scenic and mostly flat, perfect weather (cool and sunny), well organized, and aid stations were fully stocked and had great volunteers. I only have two complaints - first, I felt like once the 1/2 marathoners and marathoners split, it got kind of lonely out there for the marathoners.... I wish more people were out on the course. Secondly, at mile 22, a group of maybe 200 of us got stopped by a train!! I was stopped for at least 3 minutes, and others were there longer. I know this is not the race organization's fault, but it was very discouraging that late in the race, especially if you were on pace to run a certain goal time (which I was). I wish there was a way they could adjust the times, but I realize there would be no way to do that fairly. So naturally, I am a little upset with my finish time... but that was out of my control, and I still had a good time!

Great job, GB organizers! If you're looking for a flat, fast race, this is it. After 23 years of marathoning, I set a PR - hard to believe it can still happen. Well organized with timely handouts of fluid and GU packets on the course, and the expo, pre-race pasta dinner and post-race celebration were all well done. I'll be back!

If you're ready, this is the course

I was tired of trying to qualify for Boston. On two previous occasions I returned home ashamed of having missed the required time (3:30) by 18 and 11 minutes respectively. However, I decided to try my last attempt at the Green Bay Marathon. It rained at night. It was suddenly cold. There was a strong wind at 4:00 a.m., as I ate my bagel and drank my drink. I went back to sleep and, at 6, I woke up mad. I had not trained as hard as before. But the rain had stopped, there was a 40-degree temperature, no sun to bother me, and an enthusiastic crowd waiting for the shot. This is it, I said, and joined the 3:20 pacing leader, with a suicidal attitude. My idea was to stay with him as long as I could - 5 or 10 miles, at the most. Then I would maintain an 8-minute-per-mile pace so as not to be caught by the 3:30 group. Since I am a short guy, I fought the wind by running behind tall, heavy-set runners. I was surprised to go faster that the group at the halfway mark. The leader caught me at the final miles and said, "Hi, you've got it." I had run 20 miles in 2 and a half hours! Runners know that in the remaining miles one pays the price. And those were difficult miles, but I was mad, and that madness kept me running to the finish line. I finished 5 minutes behind the 3:20 pacer and 5 minutes ahead of the group I was trying to avoid. Green Bay has a flat course, the weather conditions were perfect, and I was grumpy and that helped. Thanks to all the organizers and spectators. It was very encouraging to receive a water cup form a disabled volunteer. How can I forget Green Bay?

Great party race, and for good runners too.

Great setup - running in Lambeau Field is really cool for a person from the Midwest. Finish line beer and brats - EXCELLENT; pasta dinner - cool, at Lambeau Field; and the Titletown Brewery? Not to miss. Course was easy to run - enough changes to work some different muscles. Lots of company through the 1/2 marathon turn. Enthusiastic spectators even along the bike path. Temps this year were great, and even though it was windy, you only noticed it going across the bridge at mile 16. If it was hotter, more water would be nice, but it was fine this year. I would and have recommended this race to others as the one to do in Wisconsin. I set a PR on the course, so of course I love it (3:38). My husband also set a PR of 3:15 - and I think it was the Titletown Brewery stops that helped!!

runner-a-go!!

+ Stuff: 1) Post-race beer and brats were fantastic; 2) water stations were well supplied; 3) hotel shuttles were prompt and very welcome - no other venue does this that I know of; 4) course's elevation changes are early on, so no sucker punches in the last few miles, even though it does not stand out as scenic. What might be changed: 1) re: train track crossing... what would happen if one came along? 2) T's could be improved to a long-sleeve tech fabric.

Adequate Spring Marathon

The only thing I have to add that may be different from posts below is that the crowd was quite marginal. I realize it was a cold day to be a spectator, but even the ones that braved the elements were rather docile. If the weather had been better, I would have rated the spectators two stars. The run through Lambeau pushed that rating up to four stars. I do agree that the course is PR material, and that the hills they speak of are quite nominal.

I'll be back

This was my 37th marathon and definitely one of the better experiences. Although the crowds were very sparse, probably due to 39-degree weather, they were cheerful. Course was good and because it was mostly in neighborhoods, the 20 mph wind was not a factor. I was looking forward to the mile timing mats and was disappointed they were now every 5 miles. I was very pleased with the number of water stops and GU stations. Other marathons should be so good! And thanks for the "Live Updates" e-mails - my parents were most appreciative. I loved running through Lambeau!!!! Great place to start and finish. The shirts should be better and different for the 5K, half, and marathon. I never thought a brat and beer would taste so good at the finish.

A very fast course and extremely well organized.

This was my eighth marathon and the first time I qualified for Boston, mainly due to a great pace leader of the 3:30 group. Being able to go into the stadium before and after the race was a huge benefit. Put Green Bay on your list.

Great Race!

The Green Bay Marathon is a top-notch alternative to other Upper Midwest spring marathons. Not only is the race very well done, but it is also easy to find lodging, easy to find dining before and after the race, and very simple to navigate the city. This race was also very easy on the wallet, while many other spring marathons take advantage of participants.

Fast Course at Titletown!

The City of Green Bay is host to one of the best small marathons around. It has everything a marathoner would want: expo, nice pre-race meal, pace groups, 3 GU stops, fast course, his and her finishing medals, post-race party, and a run around the inside of Lambeau Field. Put this marathon on your list!

Excellent, again

Moving the expo, the starting line, and the pasta dinner to Lambeau Field was a great decision. The volunteers at the expo, the water stations, and the finish area were great, as always. The medals were awesome. I liked the new course. Even in a great race like this, there's always room for improvement. First, I agree with comments from prior years that the t-shirts (at least for the full and half) should be on technical fabric, not cotton or cotton-blend. Second, I miss the timing chip mats at every mile. Having the timing mats at every mile (as opposed to every five miles) was one of the things that set this race apart. I learned so much from that information in 2006, and it helped me with my training for this year. I hope the that the race organizer brings timing pads at every mile back for next year.

Very well run race, and the course is fairly flat, but you run on a lot of cement (my feet hurt). Only one problem: lack of Mylar blankets for the marathoners at the end (they gave them all out to the walkers).

Great, flat, well-organized marathon

This marathon was great! The course was flat and fast, and was not a boring out-and-back. There is a paucity of public transportation in GB, so the shuttles to and from hotels were a welcome touch. The water, Gatorade, fruit, cookie, candy, and Gu stops were extremely generous, and, along with the run through Lambeau, they make this a well-deserved "most enjoyable marathon."

One race that you have got to run

This was the first marathon that I have ever run, and I must say this was a good one to start out with. The course was excellent, only a few hills that shouldn't even be labeled as hills. The community were very motivating and helpful. A good touch was running inside of Lambeau for the very last mile. This marathon was just awesome and I will definitely be doing this one sometime soon... not to mention the course is extremely fast. So if you're looking to qualify for Boston, this is a course to do it on.

So awesome!

This was my third Green Bay and I just can't say enough good things about it. Everything is absolutely top-notch. The course was a little different this year than last and I wasn't sure I was going to like it, but I ended up loving it and hope they keep it the way it is! I set a PR here last year and did it again in '07 - FINALLY breaking the 3:30 mark. The start and finish are great, there are plenty of volunteers, lots of aid at the aid stations and the course is one of my favorites. It is major PR/BQ material - mostly flat with just a few minor (and I mean minor) hills in the first half. The only thing that I would want them to change for the years to come is the t-shirt. I don't so much mind a cotton shirt, but the design has to get better. Other than that, the race is perfect the way it is. Oh yeah, there are free beer and brats at the finish if your stomach can handle it!

Race with a great attitude!

This was a race that made the most of its assets. It was my first visit to GB - a small, industrial city that, on this day, was also cold, cloudy and windy. Not the best ingredients for a top-notch marathon; but the whole event exuded tremendous spirit. The expo and pasta dinner were surprisingly strong; a large percentage of residents braved the weather to cheer on runners and the volunteer turnout was impressive. Marshals did a great job managing a twisty course with start line surrounded by construction barrels. And the event played to its strengths, fully leveraging Lambeau Field, bratwurst and beer.

Not quite up to the hype.

Clearly not the best marathon experience I've ever had, but it wasn't bad either. Green Bay is definitely a football town and it showed just about everywhere we went. I thought the expo was nice and the overall start/finish layout seemed to be well planned and laid out. The course, while mostly flat, wasn't one of the most scenic I've ever run on, but it was well marked. It seemed like feast or famine when it came to spectators with only moderate cheering and encouragement where you did find them. The thing that bothered me the most was the overall quietness of most of the runners around me during the first half of the race. This is normaly when most runners seem the most chatty - it seemed hard to get anyone to say more than a couple of words. Thankfully some of the full marathon runners were a little more open to conversation during the last miles when it was really starting to get tough. I liked this marathon and I could do it again someday, but I'll definitely bring friends for more light-hearted joking and banter along the way.

Great, fast run!

This was a really good experience. (I PR'ed!) Good expo, and great location (hotels and restruants are plentiful). Course is a nice flat-fast mix of residential and river trail - you never get too bored before the scenery changes. Would have been a GREAT finish line party, if the weather would have warmed up! Also, the lap around Lambeau is great; just wish the Jumbo-tron had been on! No finisher shirt; just a cotton shirt - too bad.

Best Little Marathon Around

I ran it last year also, and the changes in the course made a big difference. You can tell when an event has its act together just by looking at the signs, the volunteers, and the set-up the day before the event. This marathon has its act together! It's so well organized, clean, and easy to follow. There is nothing to get confused about during the entire weekend, and I'll be back next year! Great pacing work also.

Don't miss this small, well-run marathon

I had the pleasure of finishing this race with a 17-minute PR and big BQ time. The course is mainly flat and fast, with no crowding. The highlight was running through Lambeau Field before, pushing the final .2 miles to the finish. The spectators, while sparse in areas, are enthusiastic, and there was music in 6 locations throughout the course, which pepped things up. Two ways to improve would be a technical t-shirt vs. cotton and more food for the marathoners. I was a 3:39 finisher and things were sparse due to the half and 5K finishers. Neither of these would deter me from recommending this race to as many people as possible. Put it on your list.

Ego booster!!

I ran a PR on this course last year! It's fast and flat: the course changed a bit from '05, and I thought it was for the better!! I signed up late this year, but hotels were still available: I ended up at a new Country Inn and Suites across the belt line. My husband was able to drive me right up to the front of the expo/starting area to drop me off on race morning. Again, the spectators and workers were so positive and helpful: I felt I had to thank each one as I went past! They truly made me feel as important as if I had been an elite runner. Running through Lambeau and high-fiving my step-son and husband as they leaned down from the stands to cheer me on was the coolest feeling I've ever experienced as a runner. Another unique touch this year was the GB cheerleaders cheering ME on as I passed them into and out of the stadium. It actually made me laugh... no easy feat at mile 25++!! The music was better this year too, as were the cool blue shoeprint t-shirts and the congratulatory finish photo card that came in the mail. This marathon just keeps getting better with each year. I can't wait to run it again in '07!! (Oh, and p.s. Thank you to the spectators who gave me the green and gold beads just before mile 25.... What a cool and unexpected souvenir!)

A very well organized event.

The expo was fun and the pasta dinner was excellent. Course was flat and scenic. Plenty of spectators and volunteers from beginning to end. Water stops were well organized and plentiful. I'm a slow runner but even when I finished (5:25), the finish line support was also plentiful and well organized. Loved the trek around hallowed Lambeau Field. We stayed at the Holiday Inn, which was 1 block from the start line, so that worked out well. This is a point-to-point race and we had friends, so I couldn't comment on what the bus ride was like back to the hotel. I've done two Chicago Marathons and highly recommend this event.

Lots of Bang for the Buck

I enjoyed toeing the start line with my wife and daugter who were running the half. My dad also ran the 5K, so there is a distance for all. Highlights included, the instant text message updates you had available, splits at every mile, plentiful water/Gatorade/Gu stations, friendly volunteers, beer at the finish and massages in such a short wait. I enjoyed the mix of residential and commercial areas of the course. I would suggest t-shirts that don't look like credit card company freebies, and nicer medals that distinguish Green Bay in some way and a bigger expo. This is organized like a big-city marathon, so I felt like I got a bargain (low entry fees, relatively inexpensive hotels, restaurants, etc.).

another thing...

Ok, forget it... have you all gotten your race postcard?! I got mine today and it was awesome. I know it sounds silly but it's the coolest one I've ever gotten (and I really don't care about stuff like that). It's personalized with one of your marathon photos on the front amidst a caricature of Green Bay around it and your finishing time displayed really nicely on the back. Although it's a very minor thing it's another unexpected perk of this race.

Excellent Marathon!!!! Great for First Timers!!!

This was my first marathon and most everything about this marathon was perfect! The Green Bay Marathon gave me such a great experience that I will most likely run more marathons. IT WAS GREAT!! I loved the Chip Mats every Mile!! Spectators were Awesome and very encouraging, especially the guy that was at 3 different mile markers, that called out everyone by their number and gave encouragement. Thank you so much to all the volunteers, there were absolutely fantastic! Water stations and Port-a-potties were plentiful and well placed. The only negatives was the approx. 5 Miles running along the river trail. It got to be secluded and boring after awhile. Another negative which doesnt have to do with the race organizers but the fact that the hotels would not let us take showers or have a late check out. The last negative is the bands that were supposed to be playing every mile for the last 4-5 miles. There was 1 band and that was it...being a first timer at that point in the race I really was looking forward to the band excitement, as I was starting to hit the wall HARD!! Will run again. A+++++

Loved Green Bay

This was my second time running Green Bay and it's getting better and better. The race director totally kicked it up a notch this year and it had the feel of a finely tuned big city race. I was VERY impressed. I have been to Boston, New York, Chicago, Grandmas... this ranks right up there with those as far as organization goes. Obviously the volume of spectators isn't going to be nearly what the big races have but give this community a chance to grow with the race. Have you ever seen a Packer fan? They're NUTS!!!!! Get them hooked on this race and it will be a different story on marathon day. I do not feel the need to nitpick a race that went so smoothly and had so many good qualities. Blaming the Green Bay marathon for lost airline luggage, a bad experience at your hotel, or the weather is just silly. Great job, Sean Ryan, and if you're looking for a great spring race head to Green Bay. We're spoiled with great races in the midwest!!!!

Awesome Event - Great PR Course Too!

This was an extremely well run event! The organizers and volunteers should be commended on setting the perfect atmosphere for a good race event! The course is not advertised as flat and fast and it could have been. (By the way, there is no such thing as a fast marathon!) The hills on the course were minor and the scenery was nice along the trail. I loved the timing mats every mile!! All marathons should do that!!!! I was blessed to have taken 10 minutes off my PR at this course. Four of my running buddies also set PRs at this race! Three GU stations was nice too! I never got tired of all of the water/Gatorade stations... wow! There are a lot of marathons that could learn from this race. Spectators were sparse, but enthusiastic. Running around Lambeau was cool - would love to finish on the frozen tundra!

Nice city with a classy marathon

The good: * Using chip mats at every mile was great. Not just for reviewing our split times after the race, but also because it created a sort of Pavlovian response. Within a few minutes of crossing one mat, you would begin to hear the beeping of people crossing the mat at the next mile marker. It provided a nice periodic mental boost throughout the run. Additionally, the computers at the finish line allowed me to track my wife's progress so I could be next to chute cheering as she crossed the finish line. * The water stops were plentiful and well stocked. * The volunteers and other locals who came out to cheer were very friendly and encouraging. * The weather was perfect for running in shorts and a long sleeve shirt. * In just three days, we got to visit a state we've never been in before, see the Twins whoop the Brewers, watch a Packers mini-camp practice, and check one more state off our list. The not-so-good: * I'm amazed that so many race directors are still buying cotton t-shirts and plastering them with non-breathable silkscreen ink. Shirts made of technical fabric are the only way to go. And keep the logo simple to avoid a heavy, gaudy, unwearable shirt. * Volunteers handing out drinks basically only need to be told one thing-don't put your fingers in the runners' drinks. Tell them to hold the cups at their base. If they refuse, at least get them some sanitary gloves. * We never saw the busses that were supposed to be ferrying people back to the start line. Luckily, one of the locals was nice enough to give us a ride in his truck. * I'm not a big fan of running a lot of miles on bike paths. They get a little boring after a while. * We were given wet towels at about mile 18-20. First, dry towels would have been more appropriate due to the cold weather. And I would rather get a towel at the finish line. It looked like a nice souvenir, but there was no way I was carrying a wet towel for the last six miles of the run so I had to toss a perfectly good towel in a dumpster as I ran by. Other changes that would enhance the experience: * It was very cold after we cooled down from the run. When I tried to go inside the arena next to the finish area, the security guard told me I could only stay for a few minutes. Maybe there should be a heated tent set up to help warm runners while they're waiting for their friends and spouses. * If they're going to stick with the bike path, it would be nice to have some signs posted along the path that describe the view. For instance, during our run along the path we could see numerous factory-type buildings on the other side of the river. I was curious about them (were they the meat-packing plants that inspired the football team's name?), but there was no way to know what they were. * I like other people's suggestions to use the scoreboard in Lambeau in some way. Elapsed time, runner names, etc.

Great course, fastest ever for me, good job.

What a great day!! I run in the high desert, and So Cal. so the cool weather was sooooo welcome. Only in Wisconsin will you get a beer and a brat. No stinking health food for us!! The only thing missing was a POLKA band somewhere...but all the bands were great! especially at the finish line, when I could hang around to hear them a while. Great idea to have engraving there, so I took advantage of that to inscribe my new personal best time. If I didn't have a picture of me, my medal and a brat, no one would believe me here. I might bring reinforcements with me next year. Hope to do it again. This is my 3rd state, going for all of them. Good picture taking in the stadium, they took one with the scoreboard behind me, definitly getting that one. Can I get Brett to sign it???

New Standard for Timing/Results

The Green Bay Marathon has set the standard for timing and results by which I will compare every other race I run. The logistics and coordination needed to have timing mats at EVERY mile of a marathon course is mind boggling. The online results are the most comprehensive and informative I have ever seen. I was impressed a few years back when Boston had timing mats at every 5K. To say I am merely impressed with Green Bay is a true understatement. It will be interesting to see how long it takes the majors to catch up.

Fantastic running experience

As a die-hard Packer fan, I had to run this marathon. What a fantastic race!!The spectators were terrific. The course was wonderful - especially running through Lambeau Field. Loved the food along the race route - orange slices, bananas, Gu, chocolate chip cookies. The volunteers were great. And best of all - brats and beer at the finish line. A local band, Big Mouth played at the finish - they're great, too!

Great Times in Brett Favre's Home

Tough to admit for a dyed in the wool Bear fan, Green Bay puts on a whale of a marathon. Although a little chilly at the start (it was cold) and seemingly a headwind for about 17 miles (I swear), I was able to knock 10 minutes off my previous marathon best. Pluses: The little lady at the end of her driveway with the table full of bananas somewhere in between Mile 20-24. Oranges and water everywhere you turned. Timing mats at each mile. Encouraging fans throughout the race. Coming through the tunnel at Lambeau. Hearing many names, including mine, as we crossed the finish line. The brats and beer at the end. The overall organization including the pasta dinner. Nitpicks:A half marathon split mat (Can't even consider it a minus). More streets and less running path along the river.

Great marathon

What a great day for a run (besides the wind the last 5 miles). There were plenty of water stops the entire race and the timing mats every mile, good idea. Thank you to the volunteers for all your help and especially the one who caught up to me with Gu after I had dropped it - thank you. Lambeau Field was pretty awesome, even though I'm a Vikings fan. Our hotel let us come back a take a shower and even relax an hour or so. Overall a great race. Will be back next year.

Great Day for Running!

This was my second marathon and so far my best. The turnout of runners and spectators was great and my hat's off to everyone who volunteered and cheered for us! It was 38 degrees at the start which helped me obtain my goal of finishing under 4 hours. I finished at 3:47. The worst part was running into a strong headwind the last 5 miles. The only recommendation would be to make the finish line inside Lambeau Field as you kind-of peak with 1/2 more mile to go after you leave Lambeau. Otherwise I wouldn't change a thing.

great fans and volunteers!

This was a fun and enjoyable race. Great support from spectators and great volunteers! My favorite part of the course was the river trail, which was beautiful and came just at the right time (about miles 15-20). The only negative I would have about the course is how much of it is on concrete. There was some wind and the course has some gentle hills. Running through Lambeau was really fun, although at that stage of the race I could have done without the twists and turns getting in and out of the stadium. Overall a great experience though.

Well organized, beautiful course, few spectators

Overall, the organization of the event was great. The course is very flat with the exception of one small hill before the bridge. I was disappointed with the number of spectators on the course. They also need to tell runners from out of state that they cannot park on the street overnight, even if the sign says it is okay. From our hotel we had 15 cars towed the morning of the race and we all had to pay $130.00. They may want to inform the city that all of the out-of-state runners bring in revenue to the city. We were all very angry and it was a terrible way to remember a great weekend. This would be a great course for first-timers.

Great fun.

Even though the weather was cold to start (30's), there were lots of fans to cheer the runners on. the volunteers were fantastic. The timing chip time at each mile marker was great. So many smiling faces from volunteers to runners. Great fun for all. Lambeau is just awesome to run through. Wish we could have done the Lambeau Leap at the end. Definitely will do this one again. Loved the beer and brats at the end too.

This was my second time running this one. Great organization of every detail. Having an engraver at the finish was very nice. Very few turns in the course. Very possible to PR on this course, which I did. Timing mats on each mile is awesome! The only race in the country to do this. Thanks Green Bay!!

A Great Organized Race & Course but Few Fans!

Great course! Organization excellent. Spectators sorely lacking compared to the Fox Cities Marathon. Most of course was very residential and/or through the park, which probably limited spectators. (Also COLD!) Toilets on the course were sorely lacking, especially along the river walkway where runners were forced to relieve themselves in bushes for want of a porta-potty!

What a Grrrreat Race!

This was my 3rd year at Cellcom Green Bay Marathon! This was the 2nd year I ran the half marathon and it won't be my last either. All of my previous half marathons have been in either St. Louis, Chicago, or Peoria, IL! I particularly enjoyed a somewhat smaller venue. The course was relatively flat which I enjoyed. There were plenty of water/Gatorade stations, and the fact that there we're chip mats at each mile was a neat idea, allowing me to forget about punching in splits on my watch, as these are all reflected on the results page. Lambeau Field, extensive resedential coverage, and the folks at the start line gear check did a great job, but I suspect they may have felt ambushed by a substantial increase over last year. This is a very good race. Overall I would give this marathon an A+ for this year!

Awesome experience

Beautiful course, and chip timing mats at every mile?!? Who does that! Other marathons I've ran have had problems just getting mile markers in the right places, the organizers of this race had it down cold. Although I was unable to stomach the idea of beer and brats at the end of a marathon, it sounded damn good a couple hours later! Huge props to everyone involved. A couple suggestions, having the runner's names pop onto the jumbotron in Lambeau field as they entered would have been amazing, maybe next year. My only negative would be the pasta party. Have a couple different kinds of pasta, and more than one sauce. (I love alfredo!) There was more than enough room for more tables...expand a little bit. Also, the worst root beer I've ever had. Overall, Id do this race again in a heartbeat, but I'd find a decent restaurant to eat at the night before.

a GREAT small marathon

If you've done smaller marathons (not Chicago/New York/etc) and enjoyed them, then do Green Bay! It will BLOW YOUR MIND! What I really remember about Sunday was the fact I was thanked so many times by volunteers for running. I don't think that has ever happened before. 'You're looking great! Thanks so much for running!' was something new to my ears and truly wonderful. I also loved the mile-by-mile chip pads and of course the beer/brat at the end. While the medal left something to be desired, I have very little bad to say about the run. It was wonderful and far more than I expected. The convention was a bit weak, and, as a previous poster noted, the entire run seemed to be INTO the wind...I swear! All in all, Sean Ryan and Green Bay residents have so much to be proud of. It was a wonderful time, and I'll be back! But next year, don't let the Bears fans run through Lambeau. Vince is rolling over in his grave. :)

The course was so boring I fell asleep

I don't know why people recommend this marathon. 70% of it is on suburban streets running by houses that all look the same, and 10% of it is on a highway with strip malls. There is a nice part by the river but it is only scenic for about a mile or two, and you run around the field at Lambeau (not ON the field like in Detroit, but around it, on cement), for only about .30 of a mile. Volunteers at aid stations were great but there were many miles where there were NO spectators - TWICE I ran by spectators smoking outside their homes, which was really great for the lungs while RUNNING. ?!?! I stayed in the race hotel and was woken up at 5am - 2 hours before the race started - by music a local radio station was BLASTING right outside the window at the starting point. I looked outside and there were maybe 20 people there yet the radio station was blasting music and waking everyone up. The airline lost my luggage and it wasn't going to be delivered, if at all, until after the 'expo' closed. I asked the race director if I could buy things to wear and return them later if my luggage arrived and he just looked at me and said there was a 24 hour walmart I could take a cab to if I wanted to buy anything after the expo closed. Not helpful at all. This race is also ENTIRELY on either cement or paved roads, no trail. The only thing good is that is mostly flat, which helps for a good PR, but your knees will be hurting at the end! And yes, beer and brats are nice at the end, but it didn't make up for the fact that the course was montonous and boring.

Thank you to GB marathon

Only ran 1/2 this year. I love 1) The start (KI center open) 2) The amount and quality of water stops (Big thanks to volunteers) 3) Finish line - Food - Music - Lambeau Field open to look around - Most of all HOT SHOWERS The spectators that are out are great - just not as many as other races. The course would receive 5 stars - it is truly a fast course, but a little more concrete than I would like. What would be way cool - A marathon clock in Lambeau field - so spectators would know how the participants are doing and a timing mat as you enter Lambeau with a announcer calling names. Also - Thank you Green Bay Packers - I know you cancelled practice to accomodate the event - It is great that you support the commumity. Thank you Green Bay Marathon for another 1st class event

A must do marathon

The course is about as flat as it gets (out of my 24 marathons) and it offers some great neighborhoods that are shaded along with a wonderful stretch of trail along the river. I didn't think too many people not associated with a runner came out to watch the race. Of course, running through the Packers playground was about as good as it gets, truly remarkable. The mile markers and timing system was really well done and a great feature. Organization was okay. Need to improve the pasta party logistics and at several water stops I had to stop and wait for fluid to be poured (the volunteers were great!) due to the people doing the work being overwhelmed. Not a serious detraction at all. The bus transportation race morning from the Tundra Lodge was fairly late, making the start line hectic for many. Good number of porta-johns at the start. The post race was fabulous. Plenty of energetic volunteers, and how about the beer and brats along with regular fare! Nicely laid out for finishers. The T-shirt was disappointing and I would suggest not promoting a marathon of 6,000 that includes the 5K numbers. The actual 26.2 marathon had about 1,300. A group of 20 of us stayed at the Tundra Lodge and were extremely pleased with it! A really good race that I would do again.

Great Race Organization

This was my 2nd GBM; my 1st was in 2004 - the year of the lightening, rain, wind, cold and more rain. The weather this year was fantastic. A big 'THANK YOU' to the organizers and volunteers for (1) chip mats every mile, (2) 3 Gu stations, and (3) water stations that seemed to come along more frequently than every mile. The run inside Lambeau near the end is also a big plus. Some areas for improvement - the expo (dull) and the shirt (more dull). I stayed at the Tundra Lodge and the bus could only load half the waiting runners. It looked like many runners had been dropped off at the hotel in the morning! [bad form] I suggest the race organizers make a big splash about the chip mats at every mile. It was so cool! I predict this will become the norm. A suggestion - the on-line race results should show the pace for each mile in addition to the cumulative pace. I PR'd by 5 minutes - a 3:03:30. But I wonder... where did all the really fast 45-49 males come from this year?? Thanks for a great race!!!

A great day to run a great race

I just ran this race yesterday. It was the most organized race that I have ever done. POSITIVES: * The water stops often included food such as orange wedges and cookies. * There were three GU stops along the way. * The scenery was great with lost of variation. * Beer and brats at the end! * Race was not too big and not too small. * The run through Lambeau was highly memorable. NEGATIVES: * Several local hotels would not let racers use their room showers after the race. They wanted to charge 1/2 days rate for a shower after the race. Check this first before booking a room!

Loved every minute!

This was a fantastic marathon! It was my first GB marathon, and I'll definitely do another one. The course was flat, passing through cute residential areas and along the Fox River. The wind was awful, but hey, I suppose the race directors couldn't do much about that, right? Water stations were plentiful and organized, all three GU stops actually had GU (I've run races where they've run out!), and spectators were loud, fun and encouraging. Running through Lambeau capped off a great day. I loved it!

great race - thanks

I wanted to share a comment regarding the finish. I think with the race getting larger that you should have the food tents a little bit away from the finish line - it got way too congested at the end. I have run a few marathons and the tents have been near the finish, but not right at the finish. The tents had one entry point so only athletes could enter. Also, it would have been nice to have more Gu packs at mile 9 or 10.

What a GREAT Race!!!

The course was beautiful! However, why was it that no matter which way we turned (N, S, E, W) there always seemed to be a headwind????? Green Bay lived up to its name Frozen Tundra...WOW was it cold that morning (38 degrees)...it did warm up and turned out to be a BEAUTIFUL day! The Spectators were wonderful! I did not expect to see as many people out there cheering for us! That was AWESOME and encouraging! Water / Aid Stations every mile and well manned! Fantastic Job and A+ in my book! The only downside was the Expo and Pasta Dinner at the Expo. For a race this size, the expo was not organized well in my opinion or could have had more vendors even. The Pasta Dinner got started late and they only had marinara sauce (not my fav) and the salad looked rather brown(ish). The cookies were very yummy though! Wish that there was a better transportation services offered from the hotels closer to the finish line to the Expo the day before. Taxi Cab Rides get expensive! Overall - EXCELLENT race!

A comfortable race, as well oiled as a major.

This was my first Green Bay Marathon and it won't be my last. As any of my previous marathons have been in either Chicago, Nashville, or Memphis, I particularly enjoyed a somewhat smaller venue. The course was relatively flat which I enjoyed, in light of having run Nashville,Tn. three weeks prior. Plenty of water/gatorade stations, and the fact that there we're chip mats at each mile was a neet twist, allowing me to forget about punching in splits on my watch as these are all reflected on the results page. Lambeau Field, extensive resedential coverage, and the trail along the Fox River were pluses. The folks at the start line gear check did a great job, but I suspect they may have felt ambushed by a substantial increase over last year. This is a very good race.

This Marathon is GREAT!!

The race was well planned, with good support. Not to mention, it's the only marathon that I have ever received beer at for placing....

This is a wonderful spring marathon!

This is the 4th time I have run the Green Bay Marathon. The organization and the spectators are great. The run through historic Lambeau Field is very inspirational. I will definitely run this one again.

FUN!!!!

I ran the 1st 3 GB Marathons, missed 2, and this is the best of the 4 I've done. The course is NOT as hilly as I thought it would be (more gradual up & downs); I personally was having a bad day that had nothing to do with the course and still bested my time in this race by 10-15 min. As has already been said, the expo was well-organized, the volunteers were first-rate (had to be at least half the town volunteering), lots of water stations, lots of encouragement though it was 'quieter' than I'd expected, and it is SO NICE to have brats and beer at the end. And popsicle-thingies. They also did a different timing chip that allowed my family to track my progress real-time online from the hotel; DH arrived just a few minutes before I finished. All runners' splits are saved on the website so I was able to look myself up and see exactly where the wheels fell off....

First-Class Organization

At mile 25.8, you enter a tunnel, run across a row of bricks and your breath is instantly taken away. As a lifelong Packer fan, running into Lambeau Field was the thrill of a lifetime. As a race director and marathoner, we were treated to a first-class race by director Sean Ryan, his staff, and a group of volunteers that obviously take great pride in the experience they provide to the runner. I'd recommend this race to anybody looking for a late spring marathon.

Nice, well rganized and fast enough

I am not sure where the comments about the river trail being slippery or hills came from?? I ran it for the fist time this year and thought it was fast with only a few small ups and downs. The wind was strong enough that you wanted to run in a pack along the river part of the course (Thanks Rick S from St Point for breaking the wind). The start was great - indoor area and enough porta johns, the course was fast, the water stops plentiful and well organized, the finish was well done with plenty of water and stuff, and the showers with towels a nice touch. Having the 1/2 marathon joining back up with the marathon at mile 24ish was difficult. It made you run around a lot of walkers that were 4 & 5 across. Lambeau was also very difficult for the same reason. There was a lot more concrete than I expected. Someone said not a PR course, but I actually tied my PR to the second from Twin Cities last year and this was a faster course. Thank you to all the volunteers - You make or break the marathon experience and you made this one for me.

Efficient expo, pretty course, nice volunteers, getting to run inside Lambeau Field: priceless. Even the *weather* was nice (though a little warmer than I expected). This is racing the way you hoped it could be.

Tough conditions.

This was my first year at Cellcom. I read in previous threads that this was a flat, fast course! Far from the truth. Plenty of rolling hills, slippery path along the water. Nice to run for FUN, but not a P.R.-type course. The day is more for spectators.

Wonderful First-Time Experience!

This was my first marathon and have to say I was impressed! The last 8 miles my legs felt like two anchors. My head was in a complete fog. The weather got into the 70's. Every step felt like I was running barefoot on concrete, but this marathon and the spectators made it SO worth it. I would come back again in a heartbeat. Even running along the trail on the river there were people cheering you on. 3 times I was handed GU and the water stations were so plentiful I passed a couple up. People were handing out bananas, oranges, cookies and candy along the course. And I can't tell you enough how wonderful it was to have people hand out wet washcloths along the trail and then wet sponges towards the end. Green Bay is definitely a marathon you should not pass up!

Great Race & Atmosphere

I thought this was a really nice race; the expo was well organized and the lines were quick, the support along the route was nice, and the hot weather was the only drawback. Of course, running through Lambeau Field... that experience speaks for itself. In addition, I really thought the people of Green Bay were wonderful. I'm looking forward to returning in the not-too-distant future.

Best one of the five

I have done the full marathon all five years. This year was definitely the BEST of the five. The new course was awesome. Having Lambeau at the end continually gave me something to look forward to. The volunteers were the real stars of the day. Those of us running were able to stay warm since we were moving. The volunteers had to stand around. Great job. The community support was also amazing considering the poor weather. I have never heard so many people banging pots and pans and cheering us on. As far as the organization, everything ran smoothly. The only place for a small improvement would be to have someone inside Washington Commons telling us what is going on. Hopefully we will never have to go through this again and that would be moot. Great job to everyone involved. I hope the event, and my participation, continues for years to come.

Fast Course

This was my 7th marathon; I've run in Chicago, New York (twice), Maryland, Texas, and Ohio. While much of the course was on pavement, the course was also flat and fast. I'd recommend to anyone wanting a PR or to qualify for Boston. As for beauty, the parts on the bike path next to the water were nice and quiet. Organization was okay but not great. The weather was not cooperating, and the race had to be delayed for 1/2 hour. Runners were left in the dark during this time and had to scramble to find any info about this on their own while waiting at the start. Also, buses dropped us off about 1/4 to 1/2 mile from the start; no one told the runners about this either. But volunteers and overall organization on the course itself were both fantastic! Water aids, gels, porto-pots were numerous and well-placed. When present, the spectators were amazing; kudos to the folks in Green Bay. However, there were many lonely times on that course in which no spectators were found: a slight drawback to a smaller event. Given this seemingly average review, I would still definitely recommend this race as a small fast race, where one can take advantage of the relatively small number of runners while still enjoying the support of the fantastic Green Bay community. I'd run it again.

Great atmosphere and organization of event

Awesome marathon! I will never forget running through Lambeau Field at the end and how energized the crowd was at the finish line. The marathon was very well organized and the finish area was the best! There is plenty of food and refreshments. The runners area is blocked off very well so when runners finish there is space to meet family & friends as well as unwind from the race. The Saturday morning Prevea training runs were very well organized and definitely helped me reach my PR on race day. Thanks to the race director for all his time in coordinating the training runs! I shaved 30 minutes off my previous marathon thanks to the Prevea training group. I will be back in 2005!

Great run despite the downpour

Fourth year in a row running Cellcom. I did a 5 minute PR even with the rain and wind. I was amazed at all the volunteers who put up with the driving rain and strong winds to be there for us. Heated buses were a welcome sight after the chill set in at the finish. Even the cars were patient as they waited for us to cross all the major intersections. It is a perfect marathon for those who simply love to run and are not looking for the huge field and crowds of a Chicago Marathon. I did miss the Harley escorts we usually have but the rain made that impossible. I plan to be back next year. By the way, the people at the hotel and expo were just wonderful.

Total surprise

I once swore that I would never run the Green Bay Marathon (who wants to run around Green Bay?!) but after getting tortured by the heat in Boston and licking my worst-time-ever wounds I quickly registered for GB. Imagine my surprise when I loved the course, atmosphere, spectators, Lambeau, etc and felt the best EVER in 11 marathons! It was GREAT. I am so happy I decided to run there and would definitely do it again. The Fox River Trail was awesome, course flat and fast and good old Green Bay cooked up a thunderstorm at the start to make things more exciting. I would highly recommend this race to people - especially first-timers and Packer fans. Great job on a great race!

My coldest winter was spring in Green Bay

The world's best race director cant control the weather. Driving rain and high winds gave a Green Bay welcome to all the runners awaiting the start in the middle of the Ray Nitschke Bridge over the Fox River. The forecast was for more of the same all day. The race director played a hunch and it paid off. He delayed the race for 35 minutes. For the most part the rain stopped about 20 minutes into the race. The cold temps prompted this San Diego guy to run a PR through the puddles of Northern Wisconsin. The Course: A bit too much cement, however, the trip down the Fox River Trail was on a beautiful fresh layer of asphalt and we had the wind at our backs. It was fabulous! Most of the course is protected by the downtown buildings or by the mature trees in the residential neighborhoods. It cut the wind very well. The final mile in Lambeau was cool, but not the safest. The running surface was sealed cement. When wet it gets very slippery. Fortunately, I didnt go down nor did I see anyone else fall. It is a flat and fast course. Organization: This is by no means a mega-thon. That was one of the primary reasons I chose to run up there. The race director was available (and approachable) at the expo to answer any course related questions. Everything was very well organized and they handled the weather problem very well. Spectators: It was amazing to see specators standing with umbrellas in the pouring rain early on a Sunday morning. Thats why I give them 5 stars. And the volunteers get 5 stars as well. All the aid stations were well staffed and nobody seemed to care that they were standing around in an icy cold rain storm. Incredible. Despite the weather I had a great weekend in Green Bay and highly recommend this race. The hotels and restaurants are reasonably priced and the people are all friendly. (Although there seem to be a lot of cigarette smokers)... Where else can you run mile 26 through a storied football stadium, and then be rewarded with free Titletown Beer and grilled bratwurst. It was a blast. Great job, Green Bay!

Thank You Green Bay!

What a day! Rain, wind, and lightning, plagued the start of this year's race but kudos are in order for the staff and the incredible volunteers who turned what could have been a disaster into a fantastic race. Race directors pushed the start back 30 minutes to take advantage of a break in the weather and sure enough after about mile 9 the rain and wind subsided to a point where it became almost perfect marathoning weather. Special recognition should go to the volunteers and citizens of Green Bay who came out in droves to support the race. When I awoke at 3:30am to the sound of distant thunder and wind-driven rain pelting the windows of the hotel I thought it would be a lonely day on the course. I couldn't have been more wrong! At many points along the course there were spectators enthusiastically cheering us on. The aid stations were frequent and well stocked and the hearty souls manning the stations cheerfully dispensed a wide variety of goods (thanks for having the water AFTER the Gatorade at each aid station... finally someone got it right!). The course was nice with only a few minor hills. One suggestion I would make is to move the trip through Lambeau Field to earlier in the race. I suspect that I speak for most marathoners when I say that at mile 25.5 all I want to see is the finish line, so my memory of the trip around the field is lost in the haze of just wanting to finish. All in all though it was a great race in a great community, and one that I would do again in a heartbeat... well, make that 4,160 heartbeats!

Outstanding Organization

On a day which could not have been worse to run an event or run a marathon for that matter, the organization was outstanding from top to bottom. Everyone from the race director, the volunteers out in the rain, and the police holding traffic was just outstanding. The course is a pretty flat course and on a nice day I think a person could get a PR but when you add a torrential downpour and wind into the equation it actually proved to be quite a challenge. Running through Lambeau Field at the end was great! I really can't comment too much on the spectators because other than those loved ones supporting their runners onward, I can't imagine anyone braving the elements to watch for the fun of it. Although the elements were bad it was a great race and I am glad I did it. I hope more and more people put it in their schedules to run next year. Again, kudos to the event staff. You truly made this marathon a great event despite Mother Nature's interference.

Green Bay Treats Runners Like Packers

During the Great Monsoon Marathon, I counted 34 water stops (many informal) filled with enthusiastic, wet spectators. The course is flat (except for the bridges) and scenic, but the key are the spectators on the porches, in the cars, at the water stops, everywhere. Although I grew up in Dallas, Green Bay is truly Titletown when it comes to marathons.

I Really Love This COURSE!

I really love this course when we all run and when we finish in the Lambeau Field where we all finish. It is the best 26.2-mile run that I ever ran in my life. It is a really best running sport to get in shape or just to have FUN. A while back ago, my cousin said that he really loved it when he ran the course and he said that I should try it. So, I told him that I ran there before and I told him that I am going to try it again and have more FUN. Hope to see you on May 23, 2004! Thanks, Michael Brown

A Great Smaller Marathon

I've run each of the Green Bay Marathons. I have to say this is one of the best organized marathons I've done! From start to finish I don't feel we lacked for anything! The food at the end was awesome... May is the perfect time of year, in my opinion, to run a marathon--I wouldn't change that date. The support along the way was great! It would seem the fans of Green Bay are always up for supporting any sporting event!

There is no shade on the course

The marathon should be run even earlier. It was very warm and the marathon advertises that much of the marathon is run in the shade, and that is not the case, especially the last six miles. Furthermore, include Lambeau Field in the marathon - the race should finish there, like Crazylegs finishes on the field at Camp Randall in Madison each spring.

The good: Well organized, great course, good expo, plenty of aid stations, enthusiastic volunteers, plenty of GU/PowerGel, no significant hills, last 6 miles are closed ashphalt trail, plenty of port-a-potties at start and along course, fun finish, plenty of food and beer, and meeting Helen Klein. The bad: There was nothing significantly bad about this race. Hard to find the start, though.

Great May marathon!

This was my third marathon, and my first time running Green Bay. I am a 'local' from the area. The course is really pretty nice, however there is alot of concrete, so beware. The race is advertised as flat, but there are definitely a few hills. Volunteers and local people were out on the course cheering and offering snacks. Outstanding. We even ran by a nun out on the course, saying 'bless you!' as we ran by! If we could've finish in Lambeau Field, that would have made it truly sensational. Perfect weather, if a little warm at the end. However, based on the awful, cold spring we had in the upper Midwest this year for training, I'll take a warm day ANY day. I don't really find brats and pickles and beer to be particularly appetizing after running 26.2 miles, but hey, we do live in Wisconsin, and other food was available! All in all, I did enjoy this race and would definitely recommend it to runners considering a May marathon. Great job, Green Bay!

Good points: Good sized expo, Great weather, Plenty of water stops, Nice run along trail for last 8 miles along the Fox River, Space set aside at the finish line with food, drink, massages, etc., Nice medals Bad points: Walkers were at the front of the pack which bottlenecked the start for the runners, Portion of last half mile or so was over some uneven surfaces.

Incredible Community Support

If John Mellenkamp singing Little Pink Houses brings a tear to your eye – this is the marathon for you, and anybody you have ever called a friend. There is a reason why a city of about 100,000 is able to support an NFL team; it is a strong sense of community. Green Bay deserves the highest compliments. Although from New York, I live in another mid-western city, and these folks were beyond words. But words are necessary: · When I ran Chicago (I’m strictly middle of the pack), I was offered oranges only once. On this course, I was offered oranges probably twenty times, as well as bananas, bagels or cookies at least five times, and apples at least twice. The impromptu aid stations were much appreciated. · The volunteer effort in my first two marathons impressed me, the yellow-shirted volunteers of Green Bay amazed me. · This is the kind of race where a Mom finished in about 5:00, while crossing the finishing line with her husband who was pushing a stroller with their nine-month old twins. Nobody fussed about the rules. This is the kind of race where the middle of the pack was called out on the loudspeaker by name and city as they approached the finish. I really got the sense, “It’s a Family Affair…” · I gained an appreciation of being able to stay in a hotel (I had several choices) right on the starting line, and was only a short walk from the finish line. · The post-race event was not limited to runners, there were family and friends all over the place. When the brochure says “tailgate party,” believe them. The race was small enough, and the planning big enough, to accommodate all eaters and drinkers with ease. · I travel a lot, and have lived all over the U.S. I appreciate the nuances of the different locales. Green Bay gave me a new appreciation of cheese and brats. Although the customary post-race foods were available, I’m sure I will never confront pickles, nor cheese-wiz and crackers (among the customaries) as post-race edibles. I’ve also never seen so many 50+ men with Harley’s and gray beards, much less volunteering. · And saving the best for last, thank you to Stacy R. It wasn’t my best day, so I took a page out of the training manual and decided to talk to somebody who needed a little help. From about 16 through 21, we chatted as we ran. I received an invitation to her home for a post-race party at about 19, and an unsuccessful barrage of encouragement at 21.5; she got the most out of her training and a P.R. Whenever you give, and get back more than you get, something really good is happening. Now for some suggestions for improvement: · The same sort of relaxed living that made the race great, affected traffic on the course. There was too much willingness to let drivers drive on a side of the road. As a mid-western convert, I relaxed and accepted it, and only one driver left me totally disappointed. · When all is said and done, I probably ran 26.2. The cones to mark the course and its corners need some work. My brain is too dead, too soon, to pay attention to cones. (Maybe not – I was aware enough to ignore some of them!) · I’m not a medal collector, but an upgrade would be nice. · The half-marathon turnaround needs a little work. I felt sorry for half-marathoners. Some were coming back on the left side of the road, others on the right. · I know this race was moved up several weeks this year to avoid the heat. Please move it some more. Although it was a perfect day for spectators, high-60’s is still too much. As a mid-westerner, I know Spring-weather is a gamble, but please consider a move of another six weeks. I’m a guy, and I’ve already finished two to have a little bit of experience, but the city of Green Bay has left me with a tear in my eye. Thanks.

Well Organized, Supportive Spectators

The 2003 edition of the Green Bay Marathon was well organized. There were a lot of helpful, cheerful volunteers from the packet pickup/expo to the pasta party to the aid stations on the course. Also, I was impressed with the people of the Green Bay area who turned out to encourage the runners along the course. Thank you volunteers and everyone for all of your support. You deserve a big pat on the back for a job well done--without you we runners wouldn't be able to have the times of our lives. The course itself was mostly flat with a few small uphills. It wasn't the most scenic course, however miles 18-24 on the Fox River Trail (along the Fox River) were good. The finish area with the brats, beer, other goodies and fun was a treat after the run. All and all it was a good marathon experience and one that I would recommend.

Terrific Event

Green Bay is a great place to have a marathon. The course is fairly flat and well managed by the police, fire dept and volunteers. Thank you for making my day easier at all those intersections. There were few porta-potties along the course. This is one of the few areas that needs improvement. The little kids helping out along the course were a lot of fun. Very enthusiastic spectators with all kinds of treats, wash sponges and socks, food and ice. I saw at least four places for ice. Couldn't believe the support from the homeowners along the course. Reminded me of Twin Cities but better. What a treat. I didn't care for the part of the course running along the river because I was in the back of the pack and it was humid with little air movement. Mainly, because the path is below street level in many areas. That was my fault and a faster runner wouldn't have this to deal with. Don't pass this marathon up and stay at the Holiday Inn which is at the start/finish line and across the parking lot from the expo. We had a problem with our reservation which they fixed right away and gave runners a 2pm check out which was great. Super job Green Bay. And now you know why it's called Titletown.

Excellent first time marathon (2003)

This was my first marathon and what a great one to do. The community of Greenbay was so wonderful and friendly...sitting outside on lawn chairs in front of their homes all day to cheer everyone on...offering ice, oranges and home made goodies. The course was nice and flat, the best part was the last 8 miles along the river trail. There were so many water/gatorade stations, those with oranges, bananas, cookies & more. Also, at least 3 stations with wet rags/sponges, and possibly 5 with vaseline!! The support was outstanding. We could have used a few more port-a-potties during the first 5 miles (I think there was only an outhouse in the park until close to mile 5). A wonderful first marathon experience...would highly recommend this one!!

Nice course but hot weather 2 years in a row

I have ran the GB Marathon 2 years in a row. The course is nice and flat but the weather was hot/humid two years in a row. It was a good idea to move the race up to May 18th but it could still be too warm then. There was not much shade between 8 and 20 miles, the last 6 miles on the fox river trail was nice.

The people who devoted their time to help out at aid stations along the coarse route where really great, it was extremely hot for them to stay out there on the coarse that long for all the runners. The runner who said the aid stations where to far apart was totally wrong, I don't know what he expects, I've run 43 Marathons, and it was the most aid stations on any Marathon course I've done. I would like to do this again and would recommend it to anyone, aside for the hot weather it was great, hopefully the race will change its date to have a little bit cooler weather.

Overall I thought this marathon was awesome.

This is only my second marathon overall, and the 1st out of town one for my brother and I. I thought the race was extremely well organized, to the point that we were even able to drive the course for the most part the day before just to get an idea. The course was pretty, especially sections on the trail, but the mid section was too neighborhoody and difficult to run through. The people with their garden hoses were a life saver, and did their best to cool us off. The water stop people were all very friendly, willing to help, and the extra treats toward the end, like sponges, cold cloths and root beer were the best. The law enforcement did a great job with traffic and first aid, as well as the cellcom guys on the bikes who let me call home to Florida. For as new and as small as this race was, I thought it had a lot of great community support and creative snacks etc, and some interesting ways to cheer us on, from cake pans to cowbells. I agree with someone else on the Ultima, ugggg. Not a good choice. What happened to good ole Gatorade? I would like to see a course more along the water, and would also say that there should be more portolets. I have a lot of relatives right there in the area and it certainly made it extra special seeing them pop up along the race in several places. The race was very accessible for them too. Definitely looking forward to doing this one again sometime in the next few years.

Great Marathon and City

I ran the Green Bay Marathon for the first time this year. The marathon and my visit to Green Bay were a great experience. There are many advantages to running a smaller marathon like this one. The race was well organized from registration through packet pick up and the finish area. Having run larger marathons where I had to leave my hotel 3 to 4 hours before the start of the race and then wait 2 hours in the start area, I certainly liked being able to leave my hotel 20 minutes before the start of the race and then walk one block to the starting area. The spectators along the course were very supportive. Some just cheered us on and many others provided water, fruit and other food. Many set up sprinklers to help us cool off a little on a very hot day. All of the volunteers and people of Green Bay that I met were friendly and helpful. There was plenty of medical assistance along the race route for those that may have needed it and the finish area was well organized with plenty of food and drink. The race had many good points and I would like to do the race again in the future.

Lots of trees doesn't mean shade!

I saw 'tree-lined' and 'lots of trees' in the course narrative, but that didn't translate into shade on the course, which other than the first six or so miles through the quaint downtown area was deadly boring. The spectators who were there were great, but there were long stretches without anyone. Boring course, few spectators after downtown --one or the other is fine and the spectator element is to be expected in small town like this -- but I would have a hard time getting psyched up for this one again.

Friendly city, fast course

I was instantly impressed with the organization of this marathon when my husband and I cancelled our registration, then learned we could make it after all. The staff I spoke with by phone and e-mail were friendly and very accomodating. Race day was hot and the course was a little boring, but the excellent organization, frequent water stops (every mile), supportive fans and sufficient food (at the end) made it all a very good experience.

Has promise, but needs improvement

I ran this for the first time this year, 6/23/02. The day after the marathon, they've already announced they are going to change to an earlier date. This should have been ran in May instead of the June temps that start at 70 deg at 5am and are in the upper 80's by race end. There has got to be better scenery in Green Bay than what was on the course, and I would like it if the shady part of the course wasn't only on the first four miles. After midway, the water stations were too far apart, especially every time you looked up in the first 4 miles, there was another drink station to accomodate the returning half-thoners. The spectators that were out were fantastic, especially the ones with sprinklers out and the ones who setup their own drink stations, but it wasn't unusual to go a quarter to half mile without anyone along the course. Hopefully they will change the date to sometime in early May and better setup the drink tables and porto-potties. There isn't much that can be done about the number of spectators, just because it's a small town/race, but you just need to realize that the crowd is not going to pull you through the race. As a personal preference, I wish they would stop having Ultima Replenisher as the drink of choice, since it tastes just about as bad as a drink can.

Great experience esp. for beginners.

On a whole, the event was well organized. The course was more than 99% flat and the last 1/3 was very scenic. Fans were greats and supportive, especially many of them who used their garden hose to cool us down under the very hot and humid weather, which made a great difference. Foods and drinks at the finish line were fantastic. I've been to several races, this is the first time there was free beer at the finish line! The goody bag was great as well. Rooms for improvement: (1) Water-stations could have been positioned better: There were too many and too close together at the beginning; and relatively fewer and far between in the last 1/3 of the course when people need them most. (2) Not enough porto-johns especially in the 2nd half of the course - a major problem! (3) The food served in the pre-race pasta dinner was somewhat disappointing considering we have to pay $12 per head. Despite the rooms for improvement, overall, it was a great race (except for the heat of course!) I'll definitively return next year especially if the organizers decide to move the race a few weeks earlier to avoid the heat.

Best Community Marathon I've done

What a hot time I had in Green Bay. Not only was the temperature hot, but so was the community support. Parrot Head, Hooters girls, Packer fans, Church groups, business groups, the whole city! Imagine getting up on a Sunday morning and sitting in your front yard at 6 AM just to cheer. The course was well marked, plenty of water from both official and unofficial stops, iced towels, fruit, candy, Root Beer, water sprinklers, etc.. Closing the entire race course to traffic, I've never seen so many orange cones. GB should be proud of themselves for such a great race. The trade show was good with great goodie bag, pickles, TOILET PAPER!, salsa and bean dip with the logo on them. I wish we could get that kind of support in our area. Put this on your list as a must do marathon.

GB Was A Blast

Ran Green Bay Half Marathon for the first time this year. Had a great time. The race was very well organized and the course was marked extremely well. The locals were wonderful -- lining the course and cheering folks on was great fun. The water stops were really good, too......even for us back of the packers. All water stations did a great job, but I would say the GB Parrot Head Club was the best! The only thing I think could be improved upon was that they had 28+ aid stations which was GREAT. BUT, they could be spread out a little better. Seems as thought there were quite a few very close together (under a mile apart) and then there were long stretches with nothing. All and all it's a very well run race and truly is a race for all runners. I will definitely do this one again :)

I did the Green Bay marathon 2000 &2001

I did the Green Bay Marathon in 2000 and 2001. The 2001 course was much easer. I enjoyed the flat course, the spectators and great organization.

A Well Organized Event!!

I have run both GB Marathons and enjoyed both! (I prefer this event to Grandma's Marathon in Duluth, MN.) Green Bay was very supportive! Running through Lambeau was exhilerating the first year, hopefully once construction is complete, it will once again be added as part of the course. I must agree though, that it would be nice if it was on the last half of the course instead of the first half. The post race food was fabulous (who am I trying to kid, the food During the race was great too) especially the popsicles!!! I plan to run this once again this summer! The heat? Ahh...it was nice not to have to wear extra cloths or gloves to the start!

MUCH better than last year, GREAT course!

Last year there was a killer hill right around mile 20. This year the course was VERY flat. I didn't have any problems with the heat, the breeze was perfect for me. I couldn't find any SoBe drink to train on so I brought Gatorade in a water bottle, and a bag of raisins. Worked great. I LOVED this one. If all things remained constant (and my knees weren't shot), I would not hesitate to run it again.

2nd GB Mara... Sobe drink + heat = Ouch!

This was a nice smaller marathon, with good organization and a new course layout. There were only two problems with the race, as I saw it. One was the heat, which was significant along with the humidity. The breeze helped a lot, but there wasn't any advertised shade on the final eight miles of river path. The other problem was the Sobe sport drink served on the course. Perhaps because I wasn't used to it, I got stomach cramps and diarrhea from it. When I hit a porta-john, it appeared I wasn't alone in that problem. As a result I became dehydrated because water alone wasn't absorbing fast enough into my system. As I said, it was a hot, sunny day. Nice marathon, but _please_ replace the Sobe with good old race-standard Gatorade!

No Shade as Promised

The web site stated 'Totally shaded the last 6 miles'. There was no shade to be found and it was a very hot day. We kept waiting for the promised shade for some relief. The organization and spectators were great. The course was very flat and running along the river was great. The pasta dinner needed a better speaker, better organization and better food. I hope this improves next year.

Green Bay was Great!!

This was a very organized race--the jacuzzi at the finish line was a nice touch, along with all the food and refreshments--if you don't want to run in a large marathon--I highly recommend this one!! The folks in Green Bay were really supportive of the runners.

Great Time in Green Bay

I ran the 2001 Green Bay Marathon. They have a new and different course from the inaugural event. The new course is very flat and nice. Most of the last 8 miles were along the Fox River Trail which was scenic and nice. The spectators in Green Bay were very supportive the whole way providing extra water stops, hoses to cool down, and lots of cheering. This was my first marathon and I really enjoyed the whole event. Thanks Green Bay!

2001 Race Had It Together

The organizers seem to have fixed the bugs noted in last year's comments. Only negative: weather. Hot, hot, not a cloud in the sky. Positives: Many. Expo and pasta dinner very nicely done though I noticed the line was pretty long for the dinner. Marathon jackets were $15 and were nice!! Port-o-johns more than adequate, which is rare. Sponsors set up many if not most of the 28 water stops with goodies such as ice chips, wet towels, sprinklers, etc. 11 medical stations. Excellent traffic control and course marking. Very very well organized in my view. Disappointing not to get to cross Lambeau Field due to renovations but that wasn't the organizers' fault. The Fox River trail which makes up most of the last 8 mi. is a wonderful community asset which flows along by the river. The breeze helped a lot though the heat was brutal by 10 a.m. Post-race food/bev's were great even after 4.5 hrs. Even had shuttle buses to the outlying hotels. All in all this was a very enjoyable experience and I think the organizers deserve a lot of credit. I came up from Va. Beach for this race and would consider it again, despite the distance.

A good race with a little room for improvement

This was the second year for the Green Bay Marathon and they are doing a good job at establishing a good race. The course was very flat with plenty of water stations. The race did not go through Lambeau field this year due to construction but it would be a nice addition to the race. The fan support was sparce but consistent throughout the race. On the down side: Mile markers were missing most of the way during the first ten miles and there were not split times for most of the course. There was also some confusion at the start with all of the 4 mile runners being mixed in with the full and half marathoners. Overall, a good race!

For a first time event, it was great

If you've never been to Green Bay, put it on your list of places to visit...especially around June 24, 2001, this year's marathon. Home town fans are great & welcoming. Watching the race was loads of fun... second only to being at Lambeau Field watching the Packers!!! I plan on volunteering for the race this year! Considering last year was the first time GB held a marathon, it was great!!!

Lambeau Field was the reason I entered.

I think the course needs lots of improvement. Lambeau Field saved the day though - it was awesome! Just too bad it had to be at four miles. Would have been nice to have a little more buildup to that.

If They Improve, We Will Come

Not a bad effort for a first year race. Need improvemennts to stay alive. Prior reviews all have been on the money. Careful about the weather -- mid/late June in Green Bay is not always cool. This past year was a HOT race. (Organizers can't fix this.) The run through Lambeau was great -- the run in and out of the area through industrial/warehouse areas is very boring. Flat, but VERY boring. I can't make suggestions because I don't know the area. Second half of the race was several times more fun/attractive than first half. Through neighborhoods, parks, some industrial areas (what can you expect??) Make sure you are ready for the hill at 19 -- if the weather is warm SAVE SOME ENERGY!!! Work needed for post race support at the finish -- especially when finish temperatures are near or above 80. Volunteers and on-course fans were all great! So..... run through more inhabited parts of the city??? Green Bay is a great host city and will be worth the trip ....... when organizers can show they have made improvements.

Fast, flat course. Room for improvement

This was a fast, flat course with one hill at mile 19. Lots of water stops and fan support was pretty good. One bad thing was that at the finish line they had everyone's bib number and chip number messed up. It took a week for them to post the results on their web site. Put this one on your calendar for next year if you are running for a time.

Good First Effort

The marathon went pretty well for a 1st annual. Amount of water and sports drink were great. Perhaps even overwhelming (30 stations in 26 miles!) The organizers failed to deliver on a number of promises however: 'A 26 mile tailgate party' - I'm not sure I saw the party, running through Lambaugh was great though! 'Overhead clocks at 5k, 10k, and 1/2 marathon points' - I must have missed them. 'Plenty of port-a-pots at start' - there were only 8 for 6000 people. I spent 40 minutes in line! Speaking of lines, skip the pre-race pasta dinner. We stood in line for 1 1/2 hours in the rain waiting to get a seat and eat. It would have been nice to know that it was to be held outdoors! It was really disappointing to hear they weren't able to get the age group awards together by that evening, plus ran out of water and drinks pretty early. A good first effort, but room for improvement.

Organizers need to pay attention to details.

I ran the half marathon and was very greatful to all the volunteers and spectators who kept us going. Running through Lambeau Field was the high point of the event, but unfortunately that was at mile 4 and there wasn't anything else of interest along the way. Water stations were inconsistantly spaced, anywhere from a 1/2 mile apart up to at least 1 1/2 miles maybe even 2 miles apart (I would be more acurate but there weren't any mile markers for several miles either). The Organizers of this event need to pay attention to the details next year, from enough water at the water stations (I ran through three that were out) to whether it's wise to start everyone (6,800) at the same start.

Great Volunteers/no medal, no rose , no WATER

The volunteers and fans were wonderful!!! Running through Lambeau field was fun. Organization poor. After finishing the marathon there was not a drop of water or anything to drink and there were 4 hours of people behind me. A spectator bought me a glass of lemonade. Also, no rose, no medal, and still no results.
