After reading the comments for the last two years, I printed up a copy of the course map and directions and taped them to my arm to use while running the course. However, the course was so well marked this year, I never looked at my map. The course was well marked, with terrific volunteers to guide you in case you can't read arrows. Even occasional potholes, and asphalt imperfections were painted a bright color to alert runners to potential hazards. The organization was amazing, and the medal and shirt were outstanding. The pre-race pasta dinner at St. Michael's was good too! For the cost, scenery, and experience, the Memorial Health Tybee Marathon is a bargain. Running a double-loop (the half-marathons run one loop) was not a problem. That allows you to see the lighthouse twice! Congratulations to the race officials, and Tybee Island. I recommend it to everyone. Tybee Island, in February, is a nice place to be.

"got lost at mile 17" (about: 2005)

On my way to a PR, crossed the 1/2 mark at 1:36, and was kicking it into gear at mile 17, missed the turn after the aid station, and ran an extra mile b/f a spectator on a bike came to turn me around. Two other runners followed me. It was difficult emotionally to recover to run hard for the rest of the race after that. The race directors should have A HUMAN BEING AT EVERY TURN!!! Very shady area around mile 17, and I couldnt see the paint on the street combined with lots of kids at the aid station made it easy to miss.

Enjoyed this marathon and the accompanying half marathon which allowed my brother to run with me the first half for his own mini-marathon finish.

Lots of fan support from locals outside their homes and many helpful volunteers. RD did a great job of marking the roads, turns and mileage and even spray painted potential toe trip spots bright orange.

A nice course to PR on.

"PR Course" (about: 2005)

This has to be the flattest course in America - not even a bump. I was impressed with the organization and friendliness of Tybee Island. The volunteers who put on this race are the real stars of the marathon. Having read the previous comments, I can say they have fixed any shortfalls of prior years. The island has great condos to rent and some wonderful restaurants. This was my 12th marathon and would recommend this race to anyone looking for a PR or a first-time marathon.

The volunteers working were friendly and helpful. The course is great. Lots of fruit, sports drinks, carbs at end and even along the course. The temp was a bit low for Deep South so they had thermal sheets to wrap around you at the end of race. All get a medal. Even massages at the end. The whole island population shows up to host the event.

"Best Kept Marathon Secret" (about: 2005)

I was slightly concerned about the organization of this marathon after veiwing the 2003 & 2004 comments. I was pleasantly suprised to find out how well organized this year's Tybee Marathon was managed. The course was well marked and so were the mile marks. The water stations were manned with enthusiastic volunteers.

This was by far the my best marathon experience in the Southeast. The course - flat, scenic - beautiful, shirt - long-sleeve crew-neck with colorful embroidered logo, finisher's medal - pewter sand dollar, post-race amenities - food, drink and free massages all for $35.

If you are looking for a fast and well organized small field marathon, then I recommend you check out Tybee!

SSTC, Thank you for hosting such a memorable marathon event.

"the best little marathon ever!" (about: 2004)

Can't beat the course: along the beach, flat, with the lighthouse in full view. Can't beat the organization: little bananas, water, and Gatorade every couple miles, strings of porta-potties every stop, healthy food, blankets and water at the end, cheers and crazy costumes from spectators all along the way. Can't beat the weather: February in Savannah is cool, crisp, and almost always sunny. Oh, and then there's the breakfast club after! :)

This was my first half marathon and it was great. The people were great and the sights were beautiful. This little community of runners is friendly and very supportive. It was more organized than some of the bigger marathons I have run recently. I loved it.

"WOW! What a great run!" (about: 2004)

This was my first race at Tybee & all I can say is FLAT! I did not have any trouble with the course markings & the volunteers & spectators were wonderful. I really like the design of the t-shirts, but would rather not see the 5k'ers wearing the same long-sleeve tee as the one I ran 26.2 miles to earn...

"Try Kiawah Island or Myrtle Beach instead " (about: 2004)

COURSE: 2  ORGANIZATION: 2  FANS: 3

The Good:
-Very nice medal and shirt.
-Inexpensive.
-Good massages after race.
-Excellent presentation of awards.
-Quick registration.

The Bad:
-Course markings can be confusing for first-timer, especially when tired.
-Lack of monitors.
-Some poor aid stations.
-Missing or hidden mile markers.

Summary:
While 2003 had many runners go off course due to poor markings, 2004 was somewhat improved. Many turns still were either not manned or manned by motionless zombies. They could have used more and less confusing signs. They supply a map, but it could take some time to memorize the page of instructions.

There were some really good volunteers at the start/finish line and some aid stations, but some were either understaffed or they did not know what to do. One aid station was not staffed and soon ran out of water. It appears there was a lack of organization and leadership for the course markers, monitors, and aid station volunteers both in 2003 and 2004.

If you want a good beach marathon in this area, try Kiawah Island or Myrtle Beach. They are much better organized and you will be able to focus more on your running.
