"Great Island Race" (about: 2007)

3 previous marathons | 1 Tybee Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

February 3, 2007 race was great. This is a neat race located on Tybee Island. Really enjoyed the small town atomsphere and appreciated all of the volunteers. No, this is not Chicago and truly a different experience to appreciate after you have run a super marathon (Chicago/NY). Course was well marked - every bump or crack in the road was marked with a bright spray paint. In addition, the entire course had arrows the entire way. Ample snacks, refreshments, and water/PowerAde at the varying stations. There were many supporters on bikes seeing if you needed any help or snacks. We attended the pre-race pasta dinner Friday night, which was a nice event at the local Catholic church. We had cold weather, but no major problems after you warm up.

Running a loop track was no issue, and you passed the start line several times. Gave you a chance to see family and friends. We got really lucky and the race course went right by the condo we booked. Therefore, our kids and family were able to cheer us on! Enjoyed running through the small streets and seeing the cottages, small businesses, a few nice views of the water, salt marshes (birds), Tybee lighthouse, and fort. Cannot ask for much more. And they have a neat finisher's medal. We plan on running next year.

The Crab Shack is a neat place to eat while on Tybee. We also enjoyed the local area seeing the Marine Science Center, Tybee Pier, Oatland Nature Center, Savannah, and Fort Pulaski with the kids. The race really thins out after the 5K and 1/2 marathoners finish. Many places you can easily walk back to your condo after the race to stretch out your legs. Please do not tell too many people of the race; would be great to keep the same size (had about 300 marathoners). See you next year in Tybee; would be difficult to beat. Thank you, volunteers; you did a great job! There is even a company taking pictures to purchase online after the race. If you are looking for large crowd and bleachers, then do not go; if you appreciate a great small-town island and natural surroundings, then sign up now. Later, gotta run....

Wonderful race. Wonderful organizatin. Great pasta dinner at the Catholic Church. Absolutely everyone I came in contact with was very helpful and nice. The medal was also cool!

The only semi-negative thing was that the PowerAde was watered down. This is becoming more common at races. Personally, I depend on these few calories so please, please don't water down the drinks.

"Great smaller marathon!" (about: 2007)

Course is tough given the double loop and wind, but it is a nice marathon. Very organized and people were terrific! If you are a runner who needs lots of spectators and a point-to-point course, then this isn't your marathon.... This is a marathon for true runners. Mentally challenging!

Tybee is probably good if you're looking for a small destination marathon. It's 15 minutes from Savannah, so that's nice. Also, the organization is outstanding. Checking in the at the expo was quick and easy.

My problem was the figure 8, double loop course. The island is small, so there's not much they can do about it. That being said, it is mentally draining. Also, the 1000 or so half-marathoners split off at mile 13, and it gets lonely out there... really lonely. You're pretty much running alone.

"An excellent race experience." (about: 2007)

The course is as flat as a pancake, and run in two "figure eight" loops. Tybee Island is lovely and the volunteers are, to a person, helpful and enthusiastic. This is a small race: there were only 255 finishers this year, but something tells me when word of this race gets around, that's going to change. I will definitely run this one again. Thanks, Tybee!

"1/2 Marathon the Main Event" (about: 2007)

A small, well organized event. The course is flat but as the others have stated, very windy. Volunteers are great but bring your own food (only bananas on the course). They close the course after five and half hours but the finish line activities were gone by the time I finished in 4:30 (very disappointed the free massage folks left after the half-marathoners finished). I think this is a very good half marathon event but only run the marathon if you want a training run supported by water stops. Another positive is we stayed in Savannah, a great, historic city.

While the course does loop back on itself, what else can one expect from an island this size?

Packet pick-up was easy, the pasta dinner was hometown good with plentiful food, there were lots of road guides, water stops and medics throughout. After-run refreshments, however, left something to be desired.

Seems that the motel owners got the message because no one I heard said that they had to check out before they finished the run and had a chance to clean up.

Not involved with the run, but if one wants lots of good seafood, the Crab Shack is the place.

This is a well-organized winter destination marathon. The course is extremely well marked, marshaled and supported. Improvements have obviously been made with regard to host hotels based on previous comments listed here - for instance, our check-out time was 1:30 p.m.!

"VOLUNTEERS were great" (about: 2006)

The weather was perfect: the course was flat, the volunteers were great and I got there a couple hours early and parked right in front of the school. I always enjoy the experience. The police who worked the race to keep us safe - I can't thank them enough. A lot of hard work was put into this and I want to thank everyone involved. For the future: leave the finish line open to make it a walker-friendly race - maybe 6 hours instead of 5 1/2.
