Great job for an inaugural marathon. Plentiful water stations, just enough ascents and descents to keep legs feeling good, GREAT weather, good host hotel location, great award structure, great medals! I went from running a very flat marathon course four weeks before (with one of my worst marathon times ever) to having my best marathon time in 6 years at this marathon. And that included walking the big hills and stopping to take pictures! I will recommend it to anyone wanting to do a fall marathon.

"Elevation chart very misleading... but well run " (about: 2003)

This course was extremely hilly for a marathon course... I was expecting some hills based on what had been published about it, but nothing as extreme as what I had encountered. People complain about the last 3 miles of the TCM. This was way worse than that. You do get equal amounts of downhills... but your legs are so far gone from the hills that it doesn't compensate... Otherwise, great organization, fan support, and very frequent and enthusiastic water stops... just don't expect any PR's.

"Great race, but if you are a flatlander, beware!" (about: 2003)

This was a great marathon! I won't repeat everything that has already been said but I wanted to add my support to this wonderful event. I live in a very flat part of Iowa so the hills were very difficult for me. The course is very nice but I wouldn't call it a PR course. Overall organization was amazing! Crowd support was pretty thin but what was there was wonderful. I have only run Twin Cities two other times, so that is all I have to compare it to and that probably isn't fair. Lots of water stations and many volunteers along the course. Baggage handling was well done.
I didn't stay for the awards and I hear that went a little long, but they'll get that straightened out. The hotel was very reasonably priced, but from what I heard it was very, very difficult to get a late check out.
Great race!

"WOW! Great Inaugural Marathon with PR Potential" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

Some people said that it wasn't a fast course, but maybe they did not train on any hills. Yes, there were three challenging hills, but it didn't stop me from running a personal best on this course that had a lot of variety. I loved each part and the water stations were every where! Powerade was awesome and they stuck with just one flavor, so you knew what you were going to get (lemon-lime). The race directors were ready for everything. I loved this race and will be running again next year. Hopefully to set another personal best!

"Excellent inaugural marathon!" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

One of the best inaugural marathons I've run! Well organized event, enthusiastic aid stations and a pretty course through several parks that provided lots of shade. It has a few challenging hills that kept things interesting. Kudos to the race directors for putting on an excellent first-time event! Loved the huge finisher medals and the nice age group plaques.

"Excellent course support, but beware of hills!" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

You never know with an inaugural marathon what you're going to experience, but this one was great. There were many small touches that indicate that the organizers are making every effort to make this a great marathon. For example, we were able to wait inside an auditorium before the start, so we had real bathrooms, not porta-potties to use (although they were available also). In addition, someone had thought to put up chairs, so we didn't have to sprawl on the concrete while waiting for the start.

The aid stations were amazing. The volunteers put alot of enthusiasm and creativity into their stations and the signs leading up to them.

The first half of the course was relatively flat, but there were some serious hills in the second half. That was disappointing for me personally and prevented me from doing my best possible time, but I train in a very flat area.

The host hotel is perfectly located and very reasonably priced.

All in all, a fabulous first-time effort for a marathon that is likely to become a favorite.

"Well Organized for first year marathon" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

This marathon was well organized. The spaghetti dinner was exceptional although the expo was not very big. The course only had three hills of major significance so a PR is unlikely, but the flats to downhill are the norm. There were more than enough water stations. The awards were a little disorganized, but they eventually got them delivered. The plaques were very nice and with so many awards (20 deep prize money per gender) plus age division three deep most runners received very exceptional awards. The medals were very heavy duty and made it worth the effort. As with many smaller marathons the spectators were hard to find at times, but although they weren't constantly lining the course, the ones that were there definitely supported all runners. I especially like that they had published the runner's numbers and names prior to the event so spectators would cheer you on by name. The race sponsored hotel was very nice and an exceptional value at $55/night! Only dislike was that the hot tub was out of order.

Inaugural marathon - they did everything right. The spectators were enthusiastic. The course had everything; scenic, flat and a few 'challenging' hills. Frequent water stops!

"Well run, but that mountain....." (about: 2003)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

The race was very well run and included the spaghetti dinner the night before. The sponsoring hotel was clean, friendly & very affordable ($55).
The course was interesting (esp. the river park) BUT...make sure you've done your hill running before this race as there are 2 stretches of very long, very steep uphill climbs.

"GREAT Inaugural Marathon" (General Comments)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 4

The course had three tough hills, but was beautiful and had more PR's set than expected. Aid stations were everywhere they said they would be with a lot of smiles along the course. As one guy put it, 'This was definitely a marathoners course!' They paid out to the top 20 runners, top 3 masters and top 3 masters + (55+), and also went 3 deep in 5-year age groups. I loved it and will definitely be back in 2004. This will be another great Midwestern marathon. Hope more people will come out to enjoy it next year.
