"Wonderful first-marathon experience in 2008!" (about: 2008)

First Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 3

Thanks to the well organized staff at the Siouxland 2008 Marathon in Sioux City, Iowa last week. This was my first-ever marathon and I finished in 4 hours and 44 minutes. My prior best 10K was 48 minutes. But all summer, I had trained with long, slow, Saturday runs up to 21 miles, so I was ready!

The early morning fog was not "too" bad, the early morning cold was not "too" bad, and even that big hill out of Stone State Park was not "too" bad. That's what a marathon is about, unexpected variety with a challenging distance attempted only by a few of us
marathon maniacs!

Overall, it was a delightful experience, as many experienced runners offered me excellent tips along the way.

I expect to be back in 2009!

My compliments to Steve and all of the volunteers that helped make the 2007 race a terrific event!

From the pasta dinner through the post-party, I thought everything was very well organized.

Highlights for me include: a delicious, hot, and reasonably priced pasta dinner; friendly and helpful volunteers; well-stocked aid stations; a beautiful course; and a post-race party for the entire family.

My wish list: more time splits and a friendlier host hotel than the Clarion.

If you're looking for a marathon with charm, hospitality and a beautiful course, then this is a race that you should put on your calendar.

This was a super marathon. Organization was great. Smaller size of the race definitely a plus. The course was challenging but fun and fast. While the hills in the park were challenging, the scenic countryside and the wide open path for the last few miles made for great running. Post-race festivities at the finish area topped off a great race.

This was my first marathon attempt - I chose this race based on the great time I had as part of a marathon relay team here in 2004. Great course, organization, aid stations, and accommodations. Highly recommended - even had a Forrest Gump sighting on the course - made my day!

We loved it. The hills after fifteen were a shock. I should've looked at the MarathonGuide.com elevation profile instead of the one on the race website. The one-hour early start for anyone over four hours was great - for us old guys and gals, especially. Beautiful day, great organization, friendly folks, and nice pasta feed. I would suggest two things - Vaseline at some of the drink stops and something other than a cotton shirt. This race won't stay small long.

"Great marathon, not-so-great weather" (about: 2006)

Great marathon, nice course, and a pretty good mix of hills and flats. The miles through Stone State Park can be challenging, but the scenery is worth it. I saw seven turkeys cross the road not 20 yards ahead of me. We had rain, snow, and stiff headwinds this year, but, hey, you can't have everything.

The 2006 race was proof life can be brutish and rough. Wind, rain, snow, sleet and hills combined to make this a challenging race. However, the organizers were wonderful and extremely friendly! Mega kudos to them!

The course would have been extremely interesting had the weather been better. Normally, I would have given this course 5 stars with its sweeping views of the Missouri River and associated bluffs. However, sections of the course had lots of vehicle traffic and its the first race at which I felt a little unsafe. Certainly leave your iPod at home for this one.

"A small marathon that is worth the trip" (about: 2006)

I thought the course was rather fun. The hills are not bad if you train for them, but they will slow you down slightly. 99% of the course is on pavement, but you do have enough room to find the flat part of the road. The course has great views of the fall colors and the Missouri and Big Sioux Rivers. It was also neat to run in Nebraska and Iowa during the race.

There are lots of aid stations and before the race there is a large convention center to hang out in, so you can stretch where it is dry and warm. This was huge in 2006 since the weather outside was unpleasant.

A very pleasant run in 2006 despite the rain/snow/sleet/cold/wind mix that we had. However this time of the year the weather can be wonderful too - just the luck of the draw.

Great job to the RD and to the police keeping the streets safe for us runners. This one is worth the trip if enjoy smaller, low-key marathons. I would do it again.

"Challenging Hills on this Course" (about: 2006)

1 previous marathon | 1 Siouxland Lewis & Clark Marathon (IA)
COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 3

The course was defintely challenging. The first 13 miles were put together nicely, but then the next 13 miles had a few areas with hills that took rather quick and immediate raises in elevation. This may have caught many unexpecting runners off guard and had them second guessing the elevation of the next bout to come.

However, the water areas were filled with motivated and motivating volunteers with the race. I did like how some of the water stops had tops with straws on them. This allowed for runners not to stop, but to just keep going and have the water in hand. I also liked the complimentary Goo that they handed out at about mile 12.

But there also seemed to be a lack of awareness of the race itself. This was due to the small amount of spectators around and the number of participants in the race. Also, there was no expo and residents at the restaurants, hotels, etc. seemed not to be aware of this race. I also noticed that the organization of the race before and after the race was mixed. Meaning that there was confusion on the behalf of some of the volunteers instruct the runners what to do beforehand, especially for the half marathoners.

There also seemed to be a lack of portable bathrooms outside too, particularly the first half of the marathon.

However, the runners were great all around and surrounding area that we were running was very scenic with its panoramic views.
