Before the 2017 New York City Marathon, most pundits were certain that Mary Keitany would win the New York City Marathon again; and it was expected that Shalane Flanagan was running her final marathon. Instead, the race ended upside down as Shalane Flanagan received the win and chose to continue her Marathon career and Mary Keitany was relegated to runner-up status. The 2018 race will see the return of these two women who will be favorites.

In 2017, Mamitu Daska held with the two other leaders and finished a close third. Daska, has been nearly unstoppable on the USA road circuit, especially at the 10K distance – is a true force on the roads and continues to compete. Vivian Cheruiyot, the 2018 London Marathon, rounds out the list of the most compeitive women.

Americans are always featured at the NYC Marathon. Besides Flanagan, New York has brought a slew of established and up-and-coming American women to the field. Desiree Linden won the 2018 Boston Marathon, was runner-up at the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Trials Marathons and has 13 sub-2:30 marathons to her credit. Molly Huddle debuted at the 2016 New York City Marathon with a third-place finish of 2:28:13 – she could follow that up with another podium finish. And among the Americans, two other women: Allie Kieffer and Stephanie Bruce hold sub 2:30 personal bests.

It is most definitely more difficult to collect a strong women’s field – there are just more men running the marathon than women. But the New York City Marathon has done a stellar job in assembling its 2018 field. The winning time at New York has been under 2:29 in every year since 1991 – 9 women total in the field hold a time in that range.

Mary Keitany
Mary Keitany currently stands above all other current marathoners. Since 2014, Keitany has finished six marathons, winning four of them and finishing runner-up in one. She has won the New York City Marathon for the last three years, 2014-2016, the last of those by more than 3-1/2 minutes over any other runner. In her last marathon, Keitany set the world record for a women’s-only race by winning the 2018 London Marathon in 2:17:01. To say that Mary Keitany is the favorite to win the 2018 New York City Marathon is an understatement. Perhaps the question should be can or will she set the New York City Marathon record?
