Mary Keitany
Mary Keitany currently stands above all other current marathoners. Since 2014, Keitany has finished six marathons, winning four of them and finishing runner-up in one. She has won the New York City Marathon for the last three years, 2014-2016, the last of those by more than 3-1/2 minutes over any other runner. In her last marathon, Keitany set the world record for a women’s-only race by winning the 2017 London Marathon in 2:17:01. To say that Mary Keitany is the favorite to win the 2017 New York City Marathon is an understatement. Perhaps the question should be can or will she set the New York City Marathon record?

The Other Contenders
Six other women in the elite field have run a marathon in faster than 2:22 – and any of them can be in contention to finish on the podium. But three of these women stand out above the others based on their more recent finishes. Edna Kiplagat has had a long and storied career at the marathon spanning 2010 to the present. Kiplagat has twice wone the World Championships Marathon and has won three of the Marathon Majors: New York (2010), London (2014) and Boston (2017). Kiplagat also has a number of other recent podium finishes – she continues to run well. Mare Dibaba has twice run a marathon in under 2:20 – that is impressive. She won the World Championships Marathon in 2015 and earned a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympics – these recent results show that she may finish highly at New York in 2017. Rounding out the top contenders for a podium position is the best American runner: Shalane Flanagan. Flanagan has but one win to her name (the 2012 Olympic Trials Marathon), but she has something to prove and wants to do that at New York…
